Supporting Digital India, your say ...
Even if India is digital “We can’t afford a smart phone or computer
It’s time to change with the world, lack of knowledge in the market can make us easily prey towards many unwanted things. We should have the information about what’s going around. I don’t mind spending money or time in this rather than something else Digital India is what I support for and happy to be connected through it .
While one cannot deny the importance of digital infrastructure in the present age, but it is equally important to understand that they may not be of much help in addressing governance and development concerns unless they are integrated into a wide reforms agenda, which could often involve not-so-popular, structural and institutional change.

We don’t even need such a thing (Internet). We need employment opportunities.” Still our farmers are giving up their lives due to lack of agricultural land and business it’s seems that better to look after this matter which is important for our whole country.
I feel privileged to be Indian, it’s an achievement for our country to be digital also in decades India will reach very high in technology and economically. It’s better to be under same roof and support the system in terms of benefits and progress for our country.

Hello Mam, I wish to know what’s on the horizon for skirt/dress lengths—are we over the maxi look yet? Also toe styles for shoes/boots: square, pointy, platform? - Sheela Sai, Ranchi Hello Sheela, Square toes are completely out, and personally I hope they never come back! The shape is so blocky, it generally looks unflattering. Pointy toes are making a resurgence, though definitely not at the extreme lengths of a few years back. Of shoe-toe shapes, my favorite is the almond, a gentle oval that makes legs look long and lean. It’s also sophisticated, unlike an ultra-round toe, which can come off as young and even cartoonish. A pump with an almond toe is beautiful.
The perfect Sunglasses for you will be Round frames, will work great with your feature, which soften your angular features, chose a thinner frame that won’t overwhelm and do ensure the width is slightly wider than your cheek bones. Heart Face Shape People with heart face are widest at the forehead and gradually narrows through the jaws. The perfect Sunglasses for you will be Modified Wayfarer, will works great with your features, chose the frame with detailing on the lower portion and do ensure the width is slightly wider than forehead for balance.
As for hemlines, pretty much anything goes. This spring look for everything from full circle skirts to flowy midis and maxis to flippy, flirty miniskirts. As always, the length or lengths best for you are really determined by your height (petite frames, for example, can get swallowed up by maxis), the aspect of your shape you wish to highlight (legs? waist?), and, of course, personal style. Two rules of thumb: When in doubt, go with a knee length, a timeless hemline. (For the most flattering effect, choose a skirt or dress that falls just above the kneecaps or just below them.) And avoid a hem that hits the fullest part of the calf, which will visually shorten and widen the leg.
Oval Face Shape People with oval face is the most versatile to fit, with slightly wider cheek bones and gentle narrowing with at the cheekbone and jaw. The perfect Sunglasses for you will be Over Sized Frames, will works great with your features, chose a bold shape that compliments your style and standout by playing with colour and texture. Triangle Face Shape People with Triangle face is widest at jaw and gradually narrow through to the forehead. The perfect Sunglasses for you will be Cat Eye frames, will work great with your features, chose a frame with detailing on the upper portion, do ensure the width is slightly wider than your jawline for balance. So, Try Scavin Sunglasses collection which suits best on your face and be fashionable!! novemBeR 2016 | Perfect Woman

Eye-liner Styles Dramatically transform yourself from being a plain Jane to femme fatale with a few precise and artistic strokes of your eye makeup – just by a tint and touch of colors! Yes, a dash of kohl or an eye-liner streak is able to change your whole look. - PW, Beauty Expert Ishika Taneja Last few years encountered super-cool trend of Geometric eye-do’s – bold lines, abstract art, asymmetrical triangles in form of eyeliners seem to be giving rise to an altogether new ‘era’ of peppy peepers. Moreover, to make this task of applying such unusual designs on your eye-sockets perfectly – there are gel-liners which are readily available in the market and are easy to use as well. Just a form of graphic designing on your peepers may be suitably called as Geometric Eye makeup trend. These eye makeup forms are exaggerated versions of what you must have been doing until now –such as winged, cat eyes, dramatic eyes. All these, along with verylatest eye-do’s like cubic, dramatic triangles, Japanese inspired eyes – are sure to endow you with a wild look in a go. As you get armed with your equipment to convert yourself into a sassy siren with these sultry dos; Hollywood Return Makeup Expert and Executive Director of ALPS Beauty Clinics, Ishika Taneja shares how to implement this ultra-sexy vogue just like a pro! The expert is known to have worked with various international celebrity actors, models and singers. Ishika has adorned the best actresses in Kodak theatre for Japanese Film Festival. She enjoyed working at Los Angeles Fashion Week and Fashion Minga. She has done makeup for Miss USA and Miss Teen USA and did two international movies also with well-known directors, James Kerr and Jason Connery. She has also mentored MISS INDIA (north) contestants for beauty, makeup and hair. Prep your peepers! All fun and creative, these looks can better be tried by you at your home. All you need to do is to catch hold of a quality eye makeup – eye-liners, shadows and kohl. The universal rule for all of them is to moisturize, prime and make the around-eye area flawless and 22 Perfect Woman | NOVEMBER 2016
ready-for-makeup before applying any eye cosmetics for your favorite geometrical do. Also, you can use a concealer to hide any blemishes, under-eye circles, or any areas of redness – suggests Ishika. Blend the concealer by tapping it gently with your ring finger and be ready to encrypt those abstractions onto your eye sockets. The Graphic Wing: As a sequel to the evergreen winged liner – an exaggerated winged liner adds to the boldness of the avatar. For this use a liquidbased liner to catch-hold of a glossy, perfect finish. You may also an eye pencil but keep the lines within the socket, keeping the overall finish short and tight. This interpretation of the trend works best on a fresh face with a little blush to keep it in line with this season’s nude

look – Ishika advises. Start-off by creating the standard form of winged-liner, draw a winged line starting from the center and take it forward as much as you want towards the outer end ( to essentially exaggerate it). Now, start from the inner corner and draw a thin line towards the middle point and merge with the line already drawn. Now, apply a thin winged style line on your water-line too – but remember to not merge it with the upper wing. This will make your eyes appear more defined – but not messy. This classic look is mostly done in black but is suitable for colors – like, aquamarine blue, glistening purple and more… Hollow Cat Eye: How do you make the classic cat-eye modern? Ishika says this feminine but ultra-modern, the exaggerated cat eye is created by using an eye pencil to create a hollowed-out shape rising gracefully under each eyebrow. This simple yet feminine look works at the office as well as on the weekends. All you would require is a gel liner and a fine eyeliner brush - an electric shade of blue would make this look and you – both stand out. Incept by lifting the eyelid up slightly and begin applying the liner as close to the lash-line as possible. The key is to get right in at the lash-line. Start by drawing a very thin line, and add to it as needed. Exaggerate the line just off the outer corner of the lashes. Soften the end slightly by gently smudging with your finger. Dramatic Triangles: Sometimes it becomes essential to infuse drama into your peepers! Imagine those innocent yet thespian looking eyes with the use of generous graphic eyeliner. You can make the look your own by making large triangles on either side which float away from the eye. Ishika instructs to create with a pencil-eyeliner by cutting into a plastic sheet protector using a stencil to ensure uniformity. The look emerges as best in metallic shades. You would want to
match the geometric eye liner with thickened eyebrows as well; they were envisioned to bring an overall balance to the face. The most preferable hue for this look is a royal and bold shade of blue to bring out the diva in you. Turn Japanese! While it may seem appalling at first glance, this Japanese-inspired look, emerges as a modernized version of the winged cat’s eye. This Oriental-themed makeup is defined by a rounded-down shape with a pointed flick at the inner corner of your eyes – and is mostly loved in black. To implement it, outline your peepers on the top and bottom with black gelbased eyeliner. Then do a cat eye with black liquid eyeliner. Use a beige/tan eye shadow just on the lids. Use a thin coat of black mascara but don’t curl your lashes because many Japanese women have lashes that stick straight out and don’t curl. Put concealer on the brow bone and dark circles and dust with a light powder to set it in place, recommends Ishika. Cubical Craze: Create cubes with a use of an eye makeup stencil on both outer corners of your eyes. You can use a gel-based liner or a liquid liner for achieving the blackest of all look. Get indulged in some amplified boldness cubeinspired eye makeup that can be rounded upon as your day-to-night-to-dawn makeup look. Ishika says this boxy twist on the classic cat eye can make you the limelight of any of your social-do – just make sure to be playful with colors – like a gorgeous green or an ink blue shade. One major difference in this do is the use of mascara, which is intended for your eyes to look powerful, yet extremely minimal. Color Blocking: But if you want to add a dash of color while keeping it a bit geometrical; abstract shadow lining is great and comes up as a more subtle daytime look. Plus, the color possibilities are
endless here, too! Exhibit it by applying an adhesive tape above your eye-lid to achieve the desired shape in your eye-do. Now, take an adequate amount of eye shadow of your favorite hue and pat in dots all over your eyelid. Ishika asks to smudge the dots using a fluffy brush in outward direction without worrying about control. The tape applied will ensure perfection and give an international finish for your effort. Just use ravishing hue of indigo for this avatar – sufficient to infuse spark into any of your outfit; and be ready to flaunt charisma through your peepers. Bold Batwing: All you need to do is just exaggerate the preceding avatar of your eyes; while extending it to a level it form a long thick wing and gives out a bold batwing look. Ishika reveals, the look though, is best suitable for formal occasions like. Weddings, formal dinners – for the intensity it has. Extended Socket: Now, this one is amongst those geometrical dos, which can be done either way – with colors or just with black kohl in hand! And, probably one of those, which do not require any stencil or other prop to be implemented for attaining the look – Ishika guesses. Do it by just drawing a ‘C’ shape on the upper side of your eye-lid and draw a thick winged streak above your upper lash line. Then join both the lines from the inner corners to make turn into a socket-like gawk. This will make your peepers emerge deeper and hence, is great for those with tiny eyes. Just, use a classy haze of turquoise, or amethyst and rock your do like never before! So, while you get all geared to flaunt the look, make sure to keep your lips a bit on lighter and subtler side so that though, the look comes out as bold – it cannot be called brash. Conclude with complimenting your cheeks with pastel shade blushers and seal the look with a makeup fixer; says Ishika, signing off. novemBeR 2016 | Perfect Woman

Anti-pollution
Beauty Care
Among the other organs of the body, the skin is also one of the first to bear the brunt of air pollutants, which not only attack the skin surface, but also lead to an accumulation of toxins. In fact, they are potent skin irritants. There are both long and short term effects of pollutants. Firecrackers during Diwali also added to the chemicals in the air, which are potent skin irritants. Chemical pollutants cause oxidation damage and this can lead to the manifestation of premature ageing signs on the skin, like wrinkles, loss of elasticity, dark patches and spots, etc. Chemical pollutants also disrupt the normal balances of the skin and scalp, leading to problems like dryness, sensitivity, rashes, acne, irritative or allergic reactions, dandruff and related conditions. They also make the skin and hair dull, lacking vitality. Cleansing of the skin assumes more importance in order to get rid of the impurities and pollutants that are deposited on the skin. If you have a dry skin, use a cleansing cream or gel. For oily skins, cleansing milk or face wash may be used. For oily skin, also use a facial scrub after cleansing. Look out for products with ingredients like sandalwood, eucalyptus, mint, neem, tulsi, aloe vera, etc., when you buy cleansers. The anti-toxic and tonic properties of such ingredients have helped in clearing the skin congestion and eruptions that result from exposure to chemical pollutants. Aloe vera, for example, is also a powerful moisturizer and an anti-oxidant. So are ingredients like apricot kernel oil, carrot seed, wheatgerm oil, etc. After cleansing, wipe the skin with a rose based skin tonic or rose water, to complete the cleansing process and refresh the skin. Soak cotton wool in chilled rose water and tone the skin with it, patting briskly. It also improves blood circulation to the skin surface and adds a glow. Green tea also makes a good skin toner. Makeover Dr. Bharti Magoo’s Aesthetician, Mumbai, answers your queries. Write to pw@perfectwomanindia.com for beauty tips and to sort your beauty issues. I am 38yrs having bags under my eyes? - Tilochana, Ranchi Try a cold compress first thing in the morning. Clean potato or cucumber slices that have been refrigerated will also work. Another option? After your morning cup of tea, place cold tea bags under your eyes for a few minutes for the same effect. I wanted to know how can I minimize your pores? I am 44yrs old. - Gayatri, Mumbai Try using a cream or gel with retinol nightly. And in the morning, apply a moisturizer with added SPF to prevent sum damage. A few days a week you should also exfoliate to remove dead skin and deep clean your pores. From what age can I shape my eyebrows and how do I? I am 16yrs old. - Yamini, Delhi
or eruptions, add a little rose water to sandalwood paste and apply on the face. Wash off with plain water after 15 minutes. Anti-pollution cosmetics help to provide protection and reduce the damage caused by environmental effects. These are basically “cover creams” that form a barrier between the skin and pollutants. We formulated a sandalwood protective cream, for this very purpose, to protect the skin from environmental effects. It forms a transparent protective cover. Sandalwood soothes the skin and protects it from irritative reactions and eruptive conditions. It suits all skin types and increases the skin’s moisture retention ability too. Pollutants also collect on the scalp. Mix one teaspoon each of vinegar and honey with one egg. Massage the mixture lightly into the scalp. Leave on for half and hour and then wash the hair. Rinse well with water. Or, give the hair hot oil therapy. Heat pure coconut oil and apply on the hair. Then dip a towel in hot water, squeeze out the water and wrap the hot towel around the head, like a turban. Keep it on for 5 minutes. Repeat the hot towel wrap 3 or 4 times. This helps the hair and scalp absorb the oil better. Leave oil on overnight and wash hair the next day. The impurities and pollutants can also affect the eyes, causing burning or redness. The eyes should be washed with plain water several times. Soak cotton wool pads in chilled rose water and use them over the eyes as eye pads. Lie down and relax for fifteen minutes. This really helps to remove fatigue and brightens the eyes.
Your age is perfect to start shaping your eyebrows. Having a little shape helps contour your face and open up your eyes. Start by brushing them up and away from your eyes. Then, tweeze away the random strays that stick out. Once you’re done, use a brow pencil to fill in any obvious gaps. Finally, put a dab of concealer underneath and over your brow line to conceal strays and make your brows really stand out. To keep them looking great, make sure to condition them once or twice a week. And remember, don’t make any of these mistakes. Hi, I am 28yrs with freckles on my face can these be lighter with some home remedy?” Rimmi, Pune Yes! They can with few precautions if they are small and circular dark spots (usually light-brown in colour) that appear on your face and body. Do not go out in exposed sun directly without a proper protection. Some people are born with them, but some get them from exposure and forgetting to use an SPF. Hello, I am 25yrs a corporate girl and makreup is my daily routine but I still feel I am not up to the mark what’s the best way to apply foundation? - Harshita, New Delhi First of all, buy a foundation that matches your skin tone. Just rub a small line across your jaw and step into natural light. Does it blend in? Then it’s the correct colour. To get the best coverage, apply small dabs on your forehead, nose, chin, and cheeks. Starting with the center of your face, using a sponge, blend the makeup into your face in a outward direction. Meaning you’ll start dabbing it on your nose and move out toward your cheeks where you’ll pick up some more coverage out to your hairline. Then, move up toward your forehead and then down to your chin. Always apply outward and down so you flatten the small hairs on your face. And don’t forget your jawline and a slight blend onto the neck so your face doesn’t look like a completely different colour than the rest of your skin.

PW GET GORGEOUS Nature’s Beauty
Surprising Beauty by Apple Cider VinegAr Apple cider vinegar (ACV) is one of nature’s most powerful ingredients that offer health as well as beauty benefits. ACV is rich in acetic, citric and malic acids as well as vitamins, enzymes, mineral salts and amino acids. As an antibacterial, antiviral, anti-inflammatory and antifungal agent, it helps treat the common cold, muscle pain, arthritis pain, diabetes, high cholesterol and weight issues.
- PW This all-natural, all-purpose kitchen staple is also becoming a preferred beauty ingredient. There are several key attributes to ACV that help maintain beautiful skin and hair as well as deal with other beauty woes. Here are some of the beauty benefits of apple cider vinegar. Prevents Acne and Pimples If you struggle with acne or pimples, keep a bottle of apple cider vinegar handy. It has antiseptic and antibacterial properties that prevent acne or pimples by keeping the skin pores free from bacteria, oil and other dust particles. In addition, it helps restore and balance your skin’s pH, which is essential to prevent skin breakouts. Mix 1 part raw, unfiltered ACV and 2 parts filtered water in a bowl. Soak a cotton ball in this solution and apply it on the affected skin. Allow it to sit for about 10 minutes, then rinse it off with warm water. Reapply a few times daily for a few days. Works as a Skin Toner Apple cider vinegar is good for people who have oily skin, thanks to its astringent properties. In addition, it is a rich source of alpha hydroxy acids that increase blood flow to the skin and minimize pores. Plus, apple cider vinegar regulates the pH level of your skin. Mix ½ cup each of apple cider vinegar and distilled or filtered water. You may also add a few drops of an essential oil such as lavender oil. Apply this solution on your skin using a cotton ball. Leave it on for a couple of minutes, then rinse it off with cool water. You can use it once or twice a day. Shake well before each use. If you have normal skin, add 1 part ACV and 2 parts water to make your skin toner. If you have extremely sensitive skin, try adding more water to the mixture (1 part ACV and 4 parts water) and use the toner less frequently. Make sure you do a patch test before using it. Note: When you apply this skin toner, the unappealing ACV smell may linger for a while but it tends to subside as the solution dries. Say Goodbye to Dandruff While there is nothing medically concerning about dandruff, it is an embarrassing problem. This common issue seems to persist in the winter season, due to the dry weather. Dandruff causes oily, dead skin flakes on your scalp and hair. This can lead to an itchy, scaly scalp and white flakes dropping on your clothing. Apple cider vinegar has natural antifungal properties to combat and mitigate dandruff. In addition, it helps restore the pH balance of the scalp and cleans clogged pores and hair follicles. Mix 2 tablespoons each of ACV and water. Add 10 to 15 drops of tea tree oil. Apply this solution on your scalp and massage for 5 minutes. Leave it on for another 5 minutes. Rinse your hair with water, then shampoo as usual. Use this natural treatment 2 or 3 times a week.
Apple cider vinegar’s antimicrobial properties help disinfect your feet by eliminating odour-causing bacteria. Prepare a foot soak with 1 cup of ACV and 4 to 5 cups of warm water. Soak your feet in this solution for 10 to 15 minutes. Finally, wash your feet thoroughly with an antibacterial soap and water. Use this home treatment once daily for a few weeks. Soothes Sunburn: Treats Sunburn The sun is a wonderful ally, but when you spend too much time under the sun’s harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays, it causes sunburn. Sunburn can cause damage your skin, making it red and painful. At times, there may be pus-filled blisters. ACV is an age-old treatment for sunburn. A natural astringent, it helps soothe the pain and speed up the healing process. In addition, it calms irritation, itching and inflammation. Mix equal amounts of ACV and cool water. Massage this solution onto the affected areas to turn down the heat. Repeat several times daily for a few days until your condition improves. Alternatively, add 1 to 2 cups of ACV to your bathtub filled with lukewarm water. Soak in it for about 30 minutes. Use this sunburn remedy once daily or as needed. Makes Hair Shiny and Healthy (Shiny-Hair)
Freedom from Smelly Feet (Foot Soak)

Instead, Alberto Beto Perez, the founder of Zumba, went about discovering new forms of fitness routines, catering to every age group, and thus drove it right into the hearts of millions around the world. Which is why Zumba is so popular. You could be a youngster or in your thirties or beyond 50. So what? You could Zumba! - PW, Zumba Expert; Sucheta Pal.

Can you cut fat while building power at the same time? - Ajitha Mehra, Bangalore Absolutely, the training that is most effective at building power, high intensity intervals, is also the most effective at assisting fat loss, especially if you do them in a fasted state. lots of calories to your body. A smart breakfast pick is thus necessary and there’s no better option than having a bowl full of Muesli or oatmeal. Rich in fibre and protein, Mueslis aid in weight management. It has zero cholesterol, making it good for your heart too. Add slices of fresh fruits to your bowl full of Muesli with skimmed milk and stay fuller for longer! Alternatively, you can indulge in a steaming bowl of Masala Oats or Oats with Vegetables which is also rich in fibre and protein with zero cholesterol. Cookies: Yes. Cookies! But not the calorie - full and sugary ones. Instead, bite into Digestive, Oatmeal or Multigrain Cookies which are rich in fibre and contains zero trans-fat and zero cholesterol. What are the best things to practice off the bike to improve versatility or performance on the bike? - Tyela Rodricks, Goa The simple one is squat jumps. Trail running also helps. But look at the aspects of cycling you wish to improve then think about movements and resistances that might replicate a part of that . Should one train or not with a cold? - Bhavika Verma, Jaipur There are many who suggest using the above/below neck rule, e.g. if it’s a head cold yes, if it’s throat and chest no. In my view you can exercise lightly but not train with a light cold, but to be honest I see little point given the risk of becoming more unwell. Better to rest for a week than be ill for a month. If you have a sore throat, hard exercise draws inspired air deep into the lungs, passing the site of infection – think about how wise that sounds?
Olive Oil: Rich in good fats and anti-oxidants, Olive Oil helps manage cholesterol and is also ideal for weight loss. Experts agree that a low-fat diet helps prevent various diseases such as heart disease and diabetes. So, what better than to indulge in a low-fat diet with Olive Oil which can do splendours to your health! While Extra Light Olive Oil is a great alternative to regular cooking oil and is ideal for cooking all kinds of cuisines, Extra Virgin is perfect for your salads, dressings and vinaigrettes. Stevia: There are times when you just can’t resist your cravings for something sweet and sugary. But then, if you indulge in eating sweet items again, it’ll inflate your calorie intake and there’s no way you can easily get rid of them. Well, there’s a rescue to this again. Stevia – also known as ‘Meethi Tulsi’ is 100% low- calorie natural sugar substitute. Obtained from natural herbs, it does not contain Aspartame and has absolutely no side effects with very little or no after taste unlike other extracts. Stevia is also fat free making it beneficial for diabetics and the weight conscious. Replace sugar with Stevia in your desserts, smoothies, tea, cereals, etc and enjoy the guilt-free sweetness! novemBeR 2016 | Perfect Woman

So You’ve Just Been Diagnosed With Diabetes…
When she turned 40, Anjali Wadhwan decided to do her first general preventive health check-up, especially because she was obese (her body mass index was over 30). The examining doctor found that her sugar levels were high. He referred her to me, but asked her to try and lose weight and to exercise. When in a month this didn’t happen, we put her on medication. Unfortunately, these did not have much of an impact either, and in a few months’ time she had to be put on insulin. - PW, By Dr. K. M. Prasanna Kumar, Senior Endocrinologist and Diabetologist Center for Diabetes & Endocrine Care (CDEC)
Anjali was distraught for more reasons that one. “I suddenly felt old-my grandmother had been on insulin, and had been diagnosed in her 50s, and here was I, at 40, with a condition I would live with for the rest of my life,” she said. She was also petrified of injections, recalling her childhood trauma for them. We reassured her that injections had undergone huge changes in the past 30 years, and that they no longer pained. We also reassured her that it didn’t have to be a permanent 36 Perfect Woman | NOVEMBER 2016
feature. If she reduced weight, changed her diet, and began to exercise, we could look at oral medication again. Anjali isn’t the only one who is worried at having to live the next 30 or 40 years with diabetes. She’s also not the sole person petrified of injections. Here are a few of the biggest fears that I encounter as an endocrinologist/ diabetologist, and what advice I give those who come to me, so they can life their best life possible. Use this article as a guide, not as a prescription-that is something your doctor needs to write out for you. Anxiety #1: “My doctor doesn’t listen to me.” India has a paucity of doctors, so it’s possible that your doctor is conscious of the mile-long queue outside, to give all patients their due. Having said that,
PW GORGEOUS She Health
your doctor must be able to clear all your doubts and provide confidence and reassurance. People who are newly diagnosed with diabetes may be acting on several myths. Ask your doctor for a time that is convenient to him when you can clear all your doubts, note them down on a paper, and convey the message to him. A diabetologist must talk to you about your daily routine, exercise, diet, stress levels and of course medication, and guide you with each aspect. Common complaint #2: “Injections hurt, and I fear them.” Injections don’t hurt anymore. Most people remember the injections of their childhood which were indeed very painful.Today, there is an array of needles that can be used, which have shorter needle sizes than before, are thinner, and sharper. Insulin pens, for instance, are very easy to operate when you need to inject yourself. Ideally, your doctor should guide your first dose, and also share some literature with you so you know you are injecting correctly. The idea is to inject into the fat, not the muscle.
Common complaint #3: “My stomach will soon look unsightly!” The stomach is not the only site you should inject into. The back of the upper arm, the hips, the outer side of the thighs, are all possible sites. Try and use the same area at the same time of the day. For instance, if you inject in the stomach close to breakfast, then use the thigh at bedtime. Insulin is absorbed fastest from the stomach, followed by the arm, the leg, and slowest from the buttocks. So if you are going to eat a meal, you will need to have it covered with insulin in the abdomen. Again, you don’t need to keep injecting in the same spot-change it around. If you do keep injecting at the same spot, little fat globules will form under the skin that appear rubbery outside. These will likely disappear in time, but it’s better to prevent this in the first place. Common complaint #4: “I am doomed-my whole life will change.” Think of a diabetes diagnosis as a driving lesson. When you are learning to drive, and even in the
first year or so of driving, you need to be conscious of the gear, the clutch, the accelerator. But over time, it becomes second nature, and you don’t even notice when you change gears. Your experience with diabetes will be the same. Initially, you will find it a nuisance to check your body insulin levels, to take the injections, to go for the check-ups. With time, all this will just become a part of your routine. If you don’t want it to be routine, change your lifestyle to reverse the disease to some extent. Common complaint #5: “I can never eat another sweet in my life without feeling guilty.” Factor in the odd sweet when you want to eat one. Ask your doctor how you can do this. When mango season comes up, again consult with him on how to eat a slice and balance it with medication. However, platefuls of sweets are not okay for anyone, no matter how healthy they may be, so if you’re feeling bad that you can’t binge, then reassure yourself that you’re on the road to getting out of a bad habit. novemBeR 2016 | Perfect Woman

Cut down on sugar
For us getting attracted towards artificial food is very common now a days did you know that we end up eating too much of sugar approx 700g of the sweet stuff a week. Added sugars, such as table sugar, honey and syrups, shouldn’t make up more than 5% of the energy you get from food and drink each day. So, Let’s cut a little of sugar in our daily chart. - PW, Dr Geet Thakkar
Below are some simple tips to help you gradually cut down on the amount of added sugar in your diet: Sugar’s many guises there are lots of different ways added sugar can be listed on ingredients labels: Sucrose Glucose Fructose Maltose Fruit Juice Molasses Hydrolysed Starch Invert Sugar Corn Syrup 38 Perfect Woman | NOVEMBER 2016
Honey Nutrition labels tell you how much sugar a food contains: High in sugar – 22.5g or more of total sugar per 100g. Low in sugar – 5g or less of total sugar per 100g Some packaging uses a colour-coded system that makes it easy to choose foods that are lower in sugar, salt and fat. Look for more “greens” and “ambers”, and fewer “reds”, in your shopping basket. Breakfast: Many breakfast cereals are high in sugar. Try switching to lower-sugar cereals or those with no added sugar, such as: plain porridge, plain whole wheat cereal biscuits,
plain shredded wholegrain pillows and more Swapping a bowl of sugary breakfast cereal for plain cereal could cut out 70g of sugar (up to 22 sugar cubes) from your
PW GET GORGEOUS Diet Diary
diet over a week. Porridge oats are cheap and contain vitamins, minerals and fibre. Make porridge with semi-skimmed, 1% or skimmed milk, or water. If you usually add sugar to your porridge, try adding a few chopped dried apricots or a sliced or mashed banana instead. Or you could try our apple-pie porridge recipe. For a more gradual approach, you could eat sugary cereals and plain cereals on alternate days, or mix both in the same bowl. If you add sugar to your cereal, you could try adding less. Or you could eat a smaller portion and add some chopped fruit, such as a pear or banana, which is an easy way of getting some of your 5 A DAY. Read our guide to choosing healthy breakfast cereals. If toast is your breakfast staple, try wholemeal or granary bread, which is higher in fibre than white bread, and see if you can get by with a little less of your usual spreads like jam, marmalade, honey or chocolate. Or you could try sugar-free or lower-sugar options. Main meals Many foods that we don’t consider to be sweet contain a surprisingly large amount of sugar. Some ready-made soups, stirin sauces and ready meals can also be higher in sugar than you think. A third of an average-sized jar of pasta sauce (roughly 150g) can contain more than 13g of sugar, including added sugar – the equivalent of three teaspoons of sugar. When eating out or buying takeaways, watch out for dishes that are typically high in sugar, such as sweet and sour dishes, sweet chilli dishes and some curry sauces, as well as salads with dressings like salad cream, which can also be high in sugar. Condiments and sauces such as ketchup can have as much as 23g of sugar in 100g – roughly half a teaspoon per serving. These foods are usually served in small quantities, but the sugar count can add up if eaten every day. Get tips on making healthier choices when buying takeaway food and eating out.
Snacks Healthier snack options are those without added sugar, such as fruit (fresh, tinned or frozen), unsalted nuts, unsalted rice cakes, oatcakes, or homemade plain popcorn. For more ideas, check out these quick and easy 100-calorie snacks. If you’re not ready to give up your favourite flavours, you could start by having less. Instead of two biscuits in one sitting, try having one. If your snack has two bars, have one and share the other, or save it for another day. If you’re an “all-or-nothing” type person, you could find something to do to take your mind off food on some days of the week. When shopping, look out for lower-sugar (and lower-fat) versions of your favourite snacks. Buy smaller packs, or skip the family bags and just go for the normalsized one instead. Here are some lowercalorie substitutes for popular snacks: cereal bars – despite their healthy image, many cereal bars can be high in sugar and fat. Look out for bars that are lower in sugar, fat and salt. Or try this fruity granola bar recipe to make your own. Chocolate: Swap for a lower-calorie hot instant chocolate drink. You can also get chocolate with coffee and chocolate with malt varieties. Biscuits: Swap for oatcakes, oat biscuits, or unsalted rice cakes, which also provide fibre. Cakes: Sswap for a plain currant bun, fruit scone, or malt loaf. If you add toppings or spreads, use them sparingly or choose lower-fat and lower-sugar varieties. Dried fruit, such as raisins, dates and apricots, is high in sugar and can be bad for your dental health because it sticks to your teeth. To prevent tooth decay, dried fruit is best enjoyed at mealtimes – as part of a dessert, for example – rather than as a snack. Drinks Nearly a quarter of the added sugar in our diets comes from sugary drinks, such as fizzy drinks, sweetened juices, squashes, and cordials.
A 500ml bottle of cola contains the equivalent of 17 cubes of sugar. Try sugarfree varieties, or – better yet – water, lowerfat milk, or soda water with a splash of fruit juice. If you take sugar in tea or coffee, gradually reduce the amount until you can cut it out altogether, or try swapping to sweeteners instead. Try some new flavours with herbal teas, or make your own with hot water and a slice of lemon or ginger. Like some fizzy drinks, fruit juice can be high in sugar. When juice is extracted from the whole fruit to make fruit juice, sugar is released, and this can damage our teeth. Limit your intake of fruit juice or smoothies to 150ml a day. However, fruit juices do contain vitamins and minerals, and a 150ml glass of unsweetened 100% fruit or vegetable juice counts as one of your 5 A DAY. You could try flavouring water with a slice of lemon, lime, or a splash of fruit juice. But watch out for the sugar content in flavoured water drinks: a 500ml glass of some brands contains 15g of sugar, the equivalent of nearly four teaspoons of sugar. Dessert Work out some ground rules. Do you need to have dessert every day? How about only having dessert after your evening meal, or only eating dessert on odd days of the month, or only on weekends, or only at restaurants? Do you have to have chocolate, biscuits, and cake every day? If you had this type of sugary snack less often, would you actually enjoy it more? Less sugary desserts include fruit – fresh, frozen, dried, or tinned, but choose those canned in juice rather than syrup – as well as lower-fat and lower-sugar rice pudding, and plain lower-fat yoghurt. However, lower fat doesn’t necessarily mean low sugar. Some lower-fat yoghurts can be sweetened with refined sugar, fruit juice concentrate, glucose, and fructose syrup. If you’re stuck between choosing two desserts at the supermarket, why not compare the labels on both packages and go for the one with the lower amount of sugar. novemBeR 2016 | Perfect Woman

‘Hypnotherapy’ The Upcoming and Powerful Healing Revolution “I am in an elevator of a hospital with my mom and it has suddenly stopped midway. I am 4 years old and I am scared. We have been pressing the alarm button and banging on the door for almost an hour now, but in vain. I am feeling so suffocated and dizzy…..I have passed out…” said the 30 year old lady, who was under hypnosis at my clinic because of her phobia of confined places especially elevators. - PW, Richa Aggarwal, Clinical Hypnotherapist.
The next time she visited me after 10 days, she took the elevator to my clinic, without any fear. The real power of Clinical Hypnosis can be understood with the following case study - One of the most classic cases I have had so far is of a 42-yearold female, a Sr. Merchandiser with a designing firm, who was suffering from depression, anxiety, panic attacks, claustrophobia and fear of travelling alone for 23 years. Once, on her psychologist’s advice, she took metro to her work place to overcome her fear. The effect was completely opposite, she had to get down at every metro station on her way due to panic attacks, excessive sweating, tears in her eyes. When 42 Perfect Woman | NOVEMBER 2016

she visited me, it was difficult for her to even sit in my clinic with the doors closed. Hence I had to keep the door half opened during the session. After about 4 sessions, her situation improved so much that she was easily able to take her sessions in my clinic with the doors closed and even started travelling alone. The ultimate result was that she travelled all on her own along with her 5-month-old son all the way to the US looking for a job. She did odd jobs like waitressing to support herself until she got a job How did this happen? Hypnotherapy harnesses the power of our subconscious mind to bring the desired result. The subconscious mind is that part of our mind, which
stores all our experiences, memories, beliefs and skills we have attained and all situations we have been in. Based upon this information, the subconscious mind makes us think and behave in a particular manner, for instance, feeling scared, anxious, agitated etc. under different conditions. What a therapist does is simply try to understand the root cause and it’s specific details in your subconscious mind, which played an important role in the initial creation of the symptom. Once the root cause is found and worked upon, the body starts to heal, relationship issues start getting resolved, addictions start getting cured, fears and phobias start going away, performance improves and
even pain can be managed. Today, more and more doctors - and patients - recognize that mental state and physical well-being are intimately connected. An unhealthy mind can lead to an unhealthy body, it may even trigger or worsen diseases in the body. Hence it is extremely important to fix the blockages in the mind to fix the body. The traditional medicinal systems mostly work based upon the presenting symptoms and their physiological root cause. We, as hypnotherapists, on the other hand work upon the emotional root cause of those symptoms. Up until now, in India, we did not recognize the need of alternative therapies like Hypnotherapy. Considering the stressful environment, we have today, it is a much-desired need of the moment. Hypnotherapy is like a revolution which can bring about a big positive change in our lives physically, mentally and emotionally. It has been found to be very effective in the following areas – De-addiction, Stress Management, Depression, Relationship counselling, Pain Reduction, Reducing the side Effects of Chemotherapy, Fertility, Enhancing Performance, Motivation, Improving Concentration, Building Positive Mental Concepts, Irritable Bowel Syndrome, Overcoming Trauma, Overcoming Grief & Loss, Overcoming Guilt. novemBeR 2016 | Perfect Woman

PW SPOTLIGHT Cover Story Tell us something about your background. How was your childhood, your growing years and your education? I don’t belong to a film family. I have never been connected to it in any way. I had a very simple childhood and as per my parents I was always an average student. During my school days, I was quite interested in dramatics, I decided to pursue it but somewhere studies took over and I forgot about it. Then close to when I was 18 years old I saw an ad in newspaper for the theatre group workshop so I told my parents that I would like to join it. First I thought my father won’t allow me to do it but when I asked him, he was quite excited then my elder sister said, “why not you must try! “ My mother was apprehensive and later everyone supported me and event they said why not she would be learning something new etc. Later I started going to workshops post that I stayed with them, I did two plays again I left it for couple of years then I did my graduation, post-graduation. I am a sociology major again I did event management then I did celebrity management with whom I travelled world met lots of artists, so during traveling with them my clients used to ask me why don’t you try acting and all that time I never took it so seriously and let it go. Once day they don upon me and said acting is something I don’t give it a shot then I am going to absolutely regret it. after that I decided to take it up fully as a career and I started going for auditions, my first TVC was of Dove soap as they were looking for fresh faces and after so many moths of trying and giving auditions I got a call from them saying I am selected that time I was doing job and I asked my boss for permission as they had called me to Mahim and my boss allowed me for the same and I went there I got selected and that was my 1st TV commercial. So, post that I did part time modelling part time job for 6 months. I used to go to office without makeup then evening put makeup get ready and go for auditions sometime I used to get selected and sometimes not but it did not affect my career because I was still working but later I had quit my job and took acting as a full time after that real struggle started I gave so many auditions I used to look for work everywhere I got lots of rejections but I never gave up and tried and tried and this is how I have struggled. PW SPOTLIGHT Cover Story How did television happen? Right from my third or fourth TV ad I started getting offers for television but I was very clear that I did not wanted to do anything which was very regular which something I wouldn’t like to watch as a viewer. I did not wanted to do anything regressive. Even if it is that people think its regressive but has a positive message to give out like iconic shows e.g Balika Vadhu people think that its regressive but they were actually showing the reality. I was very clear that show like that I would never mind to do. But I was waiting for the right opportunity but I was only being offered the same kind of shows and I always knew that my standing and comic timing is good. So one day I got a call for my show ‘Bahu Hamari Rajnikant’. It was a very urgent casting that time and they were looking for a female lead and they called me for audition urgently. I had met show producers even before and they were keen to cast me on some other show but they called me and asked if I would like to try a character who’s a robot. So I got a brief which was very confusing where I had to act and speak like a robot but at the same time I have to act and speak normal which was very difficult but somehow I managed doing it and the producers like it. This was one of the worst auditions for me because I wasn’t confident at all for this whether I will get selected or rejected. Then I asked the person who was taking audition that Have you got proper tone and shot what you wanted then he said yes I got it but will let you know. later on, when I was going back home I was super nervous and I thought I don’t think I will get a positive reply from them and I should go back to them and ask for a other chance. But they were happy with the audition and after 10-15 days I got a call from them saying I am selected as a female lead for the same role and this is how it started. Was your family supportive of a career in television? Yes, absolutely! It wasn’t possible without their support. It’s a very difficult thing to do because doing TV show is very hectic. If you don’t get good sleep good food it starts showing in your acting. My parents are extremely supportive like my mom cook’s food in morning specially for me and 58 Perfect Woman | NOVEMBER 2016

They are very proud that I am doing so well. whatever I am today it’s because of my sister because she literally pushed me to do this and encouraged me to take up acting as a career and said this is the time to work hard and you can do it. so definitely without family it wasn’t possible. Did you have any other dreams or goals apart from a career in television? I did not have any specific goals but I love traveling and I always wanted to travel the world also, I always wanted to make my parents proud in whatever I do. So, I am glad I am doing this show. PW SPOTLIGHT Cover Story What motivates you to take up a project? The concept and how much scope is there to show my acting progress that’s the most important thing I look for. I don’t care about how I look or what is the get up for the character. But I am very clear that I have to be able to show and capable of different shows and different characters what I am looking to do. Tell us something about your forthcoming projects… Well, I don’t really have any because the life of a TV show celebrity or a main lead actor is very difficult as we are shooting for 20-25 days a month, but yes I do have few endorsements coming along. I am busy with the show.

Your journey so far… Mine has been a journey of learning. At heart, I emulate a student and that keeps me ever hungry, ever curious. And it is this hunger, and this need to know more that has seen me redefine myself repeatedly. Any specialisations ….. Hard work, Sincerity, Diligence, Perseverance, Perfection. This is my specialisation, and this in everything I do: be it tending to my plants, trying a new cuisine, perfecting a yoga asana or then, nurturing a relationship: professional or personal. Any difficulties arisen … Every journey has its share of complicated patches. These in effect are the best learning phases. I have learnt to accept the rough with the smooth. I have learnt to love difficulties. When you hit a rough patch, succumb, don’t resist. We expend our energies in fighting the challenge, or 64 Perfect Woman | NOVEMBER 2016
in self-pity, when we should embrace the situation and imbibe the lesson for life. What inspired you to remain steadfast on your path … Belief. I have consciously kept away from the narrow confines of a focussed goal. I find it limiting. Because a goal is an end, and death should be the only end. I have refrained from being limited to one path, and whilst on a certain path when I believe the learning is gone I change my orbit. This is challenging because it means, sometimes that you must let go of position or authority … Sometimes this means a time of repose … But what ensues every time is learning. Stimulating learning. Have you ever planned your routine or do you take life as it comes to you…? On a larger framework, I do not plan. I have no five-year goal and looking back when I began writing at 19, I had no editors or publishers clipped on my pinboard. But on a narrower framework, I plan my day to the minute. I am organised and order is evident in all I do. Early years of your career… … With the Times of India. And I attribute much of what I have achieved to those days. My sense of discipline and delivery got honed being a newspaper reporter. Some of my closest friends go back to this time, as do my mentors. I continue to look at the Times with rose-tinted nostalgia. Enlighten us about your view on ‘Women Empowerment’ and more of your activities you are involved in … Empowerment is gender neutral. I am empowered as a person: not due to my role as ceo, wife of someone important or mother of a star. I am not what I do or who
I represent. I am powerful as I am. And I have believed this no matter what role I play: housewife, between jobs, star performer or young learner. Having said that I love being a woman: I love every role that being a woman brings along. The softness, the firmness, the strength, the weakness – I love it all. I am it all. I don’t resist being a woman: I crack women driver jokes, allow others to park my car, I am happy to have a lady’s queue and I don’t stand up for anyone but God. Your say for women who wish to walk your path… Self-belief is the one commodity that malls don’t sell and IB schools or Ivy League colleges don’t certify. Believe in yourself always and in all situations. And believe in the larger power, the universe. Everything you want has already been created for you, our own doubts and fears make our aspirations unachievable. Accept yourself. And live in no denial. Correct selfassessment is half the battle one. Then, pursue everything you do with diligence, sincerity, perseverance and an attempt at perfection. I often tell my teams, it is how we do something that makes it important, and not that we do important things differently. Your wishes for Perfect Woman Magazine? There is no prescribed definition of a perfect woman – we are all as perfect as we can be. My embodiment of a perfect woman is a giver in every role she plays. To the man she loves, to the family she raises, to the team she nurtures at work, to the friends she has – the world is her brood. She embraces all unconditionally, and with love, and she takes all of her children along, never mind their individual strengths and weaknesses. She loves. She cares. She gives.

PW SPOTLIGHT Art & You
“Indian art culture”… shweta rohira She is a well-known artist who is incredibly famous for her hand-drawn beautiful paintings, ingenious writing, working as a community worker for a long time with ‘Selfie With Police ‘and her association with beauty and health. Yes, we have Shweta Rohira recently painted a Durga Pooja Painting for Navratri. Talent is within her so we here we caought her for a candid chat. - PW, Rahool R
PW: We believe art as a passion but, art with giving energy through your design’s sounds full of positive force so how did you’ll found it? What made you to pursue them? SR: Art, like our life, is nothing but an expression of our inner being. What life throws at us is like an empty bucket going into a well, what comes out is ultimately what’s inside the well. I have been blessed with a childhood where I saw my family living with an attitude of giving & continuous gratitude. Those defining years have inculcated a humility in me which pours out naturally in every walk of my life, be it my art, my social endeavours where I am working with the Mumbai Police to rekindle the dignity and respect that they deserve or any of my other pursuits. PW: We found your art to be unique and more of Indian culture, what made you to choose? Tell us something about your art… SR: The richness of the Indian civilisation is something that has always fascinated me. From the depth of our spirituality, the grandeur of our folk performing arts to the intricacies of our other art forms. This is a 66 Perfect Woman | NOVEMBER 2016
land which has taken every path to such levels that they became meditative in their textures. I have attempted to dip into the ancient forms like the henna art & use them on contemporary mediums to make them relevant to our times. This for me is as much a discovery process that brings me closer to myself than just art PW: When you first started, did you face any resistance from society, especially as a women? How did you tackle it? SR: Our society is operating from a collective conditioning at lot of levels. I chose to see things for what they were, accepted them so that I do not waste my energies and went about charting my path by being the change I envisioned. I went through a tough phase but it only strengthened my resolve to let my success do the talking PW: Tell us something about your talent…. SR: Colours have been a very prominent part of my life. I would absorb every shade of green on the trees while I went to my school, the play of hues in the evening sky, the textures on the blossoming flowers. I realised very early that I was a visual person, the various forms always left a lasting impression
on me. What started off as spontaneous doodling just fed on the fuels of its own joy and soon became a passion for life PW: How was your start… SR: My life has not been a strategic, thought through or planned one at all. It has been more of a flow where I have tried to keep my eyes open, be as honest with myself about my feelings and thoughts and taken cues from the Universe who has always been generous and kind on me. When I started delving deeper in honing my art, it was very much as a hobby which I was pursuing very passionately. The deeper I went the more I realised that there is an ocean of treasures in beauty and forms that is out there for me to discover. PW: How supportive is your family since your work consumes more time? SR: My family has been my life’s greatest blessing. They have played both parts of being my roots & wings with delicate aplomb.
PW SPOTLIGHT Art & You There are a few family traditions that are sacred for me, our dinner table time is one of them. It is one time in the day when we share our high points of the day or any things that are causing us pain. For me, our dinner table is nothing less than a sacred temple where no matter what mood we come in, we are centred and joyous when we go out PW: How do you balance work & home? SR: That’s the advantage of being an artist, we have the freedom of following our moods. There are times when I ride my creative waves and work on days & nights nonstop. At other times, there are days when I laze around without lifting a finger. I genuinely believe that it is an effort to balance things if one is not looking at life in unity. I don’t feel the need to balance because my family is as much an extension of me as my work PW: Your experience till now? SR: I consciously try to avoid labels of good and bad when it comes to my experiences. By now I have come to understand the limitations of our mind and have seen enough instances when things I had thought to be bad for me turning into blessings and vice versa. This I can tell you though, I have had a very interesting & fairy tale life where so many things have happened which are anything but regular or average. I now watch my experiences with joyful wonder to see what they will unravel in my life going ahead. PW: Which was your memorable moment which gave you happiness from within? SR: Oh, there have been so many such moments! The first time I tied Salman bhai rakhi and the numerous times when he has risen as my angel. The sale of my first work of art, the pride in the eyes of an old constable when he hugged me with tears in his eyes during the ‘Selfie with the police’ movement.... gosh, I can go on and on. PW: Explain us something about your creations? SR: The one thing that I can tell you about my creations is that all of them barring none have surprised me at the end. This is because I seldom think beyond the broadest genre before I set out to work on them. Each piece for me has been a beautiful journey with glorious layers appearing, dissolving, evolving as I go about them. It is like planting a seed and nurturing it right through and yet not being able to take the credit for the flower that finally blossoms. I hold the brush and then surrender to the Universe to take over and show me Its exquisite mastery. Indian fashion is getting more westernized so did you find any hurdles. How has your experience been so far? SR: There is nothing wrong with that, these things are very cyclical. Here we feel that the
fashion is becoming westernised and out in the west the wave of indian artisans is gaining steady acceptance and premium recognition with renowned designers turning to our fabrics, designs and earthy prints. I think every genre of fashion is a beautiful canvas on which one can experiment and create aesthetic masterpieces. PW: How your exhibitions are different than the others? SR: My exhibitions are not a sales generating exercise. My calendar is usually blocked by commissioned work either of personal or corporate natures. From that perspective, the exhibitions are fairly stress free. I have often been asked why I exhibit in the first place for each exhibition take a toll on my bandwidth but these are platforms where I meet people, where I connect with them to keep my ears close to the ground. The exhibitions tell me which aspect of my work is elevating the energies of the visitors, I meet people who are forthcoming with their praises & criticisms and help me evolve as an artist PW: How do these exhibitions symbolize Indian art in different forms? SR: I truly believe that there should be more exhibitions & platforms where Indian artisans are encouraged to display their creations. Apart from that, the scale & textures of the exhibitions leaves a lot to be desired. What we need are events that are huge in their scale, promoted worldwide and managed with such seamless perfection that will encourage the global influencers to come and dive into the infinite ocean of the diverse & unique Indian art across mediums PW: A part from these creative activities what are your hobbies and passion? SR: I am a hardcore Bollywood buff. There are seldom any movies that I miss, irrespective of the genre. Then there are my personal classics, movies that I have seen over 50 times and yet I wouldn’t mind seeing them again on any day I am in a lazing mood. Another passion of mine is Graphology I love to see different signatures showing me different attitudes and philosophies of different people. I love to meet my friends and spend as much time as I can with my friends and loved ones. PW: What do you think the biggest global feminist issue is? SR: To me feminism is not a competition with the males. It is carving out a niche where women are given their due respect & dignity for who they are. I believe that the glass ceiling at the workplace has been broken. Today we see women at the helm of global corporations and yet we haven’t seen the same dignity being given to the girl child in the womb. If there needs to be an abortion for any reason it’s a choice but when it is a gender based decision it takes on a very ironical texture. PW: Your message for Perfect Woman readers? SR: Rejoice in your uniqueness, live every moment with wonder, trust the kindness of the Universe and make happiness a matter of choice instead of chance. PW: Wishes for Perfect Miss India 2016…. SR: To all the contestants, you are all perfect masterpieces of creations. Go out and enjoy yourselves without worrying about the outcome. My wishes and love for you to walk the path towards your glorious destiny. novemBeR 2016 | Perfect Woman

PW EXPERTS CORNER Relationship
Why do ‘people in love’ look into each other’s eyes? Well! The first clue of it lies in the oft-quoted lines from famous poem of Roy Croft that say… “I love you not only for what you are, but for what I am when I am with you”; but the actual answer lies in a beautiful secret of nonverbal behavior… - PW, Sandeep Atre, Motivational Trainer
Human eyes are a marvel! They see, gaze, glance, blink, wink, stare, cry, and at the same time they are called ‘windows of the soul’ because they reveal a person’s mental and emotional state more clearly than any other bodypart can. And there is one part of it that holds the answer of our question – pupils. Pupils appear like two black spots at the centre-positions of the eyes. These spots are openings that vary in size per the changes in light. In bright light, their size decreases to about two millimeters across, and when the light decreases their size increases to almost four times its size in the bright light. But you know what? They are equally affected by emotional changes. They can dilate or constrict in their size per whether we like what we see. When something excites us, whether in positive sense like pleasure or in negative sense like fear, the pupils expand more than usual. And when we see something that is distasteful then they contract. 70 Perfect Woman | NOVEMBER 2016

Pupil-dilation correlates so much with emotional arousal that researchers use pupil size, or pupillometry, to investigate a lot of psychological phenomena like introversion, sexual orientation, sleepiness, depression, decision making, moral judgment etc. Thus, studying pupils has been a favorite with many – from Ad agencies to Casanovas. However, another interestingly-important fact related to pupil-dilation is that just the way human beings express these changes in pupils unconsciously; they also receive these signals unconsciously and get affected by it without even realizing. Yes! Studies show that people get attracted towards people whose pupils are dilated. Italian women knew it much before the researchers did, as they used to dilate their eyes with help of a plant-extract called belladonna. Such trivia aside, the fact remains that we like to look at people whose pupils are dilated. It is because subconsciously we feel that as their pupils are dilated so they must be finding us likable. And who doesn’t like to be liked? And this phenomenon is at its best in case of lovers. Let’s see how… In a couple, when first person considers second’s eyes and finds second’s pupils dilating, then the first feels liked and likable. This makes first’s pupils also dilate. Now, looking at first’s pupils dilating, the second person also goes through the same cycle. And this cycle continues… So now you know why there are lines like “Look into my eyes and you will see what you mean to me” or “When I look into your eyes, I lose myself” and numerous others…Yes! That’s exactly why ‘people in love’ tend to keep looking into each other’s eyes. It is all about the ‘dilated pupils’. I know that now most of you must be thinking that if dilation of pupils conveys so much then is it possible to observe that with naked eyes? Well! Though it seems difficult but the fact is each one of us is programmed to subconsciously register it. It is only about honing one’s ‘social intelligence’ – the ability to observe nonverbal behavior to understand emotions. Well! They say that “Eyes are windows to the soul”. Well! I can’t guarantee that, but one thing is for sure that “Eyes are windows to one’s mind”. All we need is the knowledge and skill to see through them. In the end, let me come back to the Roy Croft’s poem on ‘Love’ that I started this article with! Its last few lines read on the lines of… “I love you because you have done more than any fate could have done to make me happy. And you have done it without a touch, without a word, without a sign”. I guess Roy Croft was right. It has actually been done through a ‘look’
After twenty years of being single, I have started seeing this lovely man. We have been seeing each other for over six months now, and it looks like it could be a good relationship. Unfortunately, I have been suffering from fear and insecurity big-time. He is still married but has been separated for three years. He keeps in touch with his wife. I realize it is me who needs to grow, but at times, I get very desperate. I try some meditation and inner-child therapy. If you have any suggestions, it would be very much appreciated. - Reena Dalal, Mumbai Twenty years is a long time, and although you didn’t say what your reasons were for staying single for so long, we can assume they must have been significant. That said, it makes sense that transitioning into a healthy relationship will take time and patience. Don’t rush into it or be too hard on yourself if getting closer to your partner brings up exaggerated or irrational feelings and responses out of proportion to the situation at hand. Your feelings are in reaction to your memories of the past, not the present reality. Take a deep breath and realize that the past must be let go in order to enjoy living in the present. Ask your boyfriend to reassure you that the past is past and that now is now. Then tell him you are ready to let go of more of the past pain and ready to embrace the love that is present now. Be patient with the process and you will gradually see the insecurities fade away. I’ve been in a relationship with a man for quite some time. I’ve been talking to my girlfriends about how women ignore certain traits about their boyfriends or husbands “for the good of the relationship.” I have issues about my boyfriend’s past. He has done some things that I find offensive, not to mention illegal. As far as I know, he has changed. But every time something reminds him of the past, he reminisces like it was the best time of his life. I was not around at this “best time of his life” and would not have stayed around if I had been because of moral issues. But if he’s changed so much, how come he remembers these times so fondly all the time? It’s like he regrets changing into a better person. This and other little things about him annoy me a lot. There are plenty fish in the sea, right? Should I learn to accept him…or go fishing? - Radhika Tulli, Chennai You may be making more out of your boyfriend’s nostalgia of the past than is really there. For instance, his fond memories of the past may have nothing to do with their illegal or immoral nature. It is quite common to reminisce about the good old days not because what you did was so wonderful but because it recalls the feelings of adventure, freedom, and camaraderie of those days. The thing to do is ask him what he liked best about those days. If he tells you he misses breaking the law, then perhaps you should go fishing. If he just remembers the fun feelings of those times, then I don’t see it as a problem. I think it is significant that he had changed from his earlier behaviour even before he was with you. That suggests to me that he has outgrown the more reckless aspects of his past on his own. So if he wasn’t forced to change, it is unlikely that “he regrets changing into a better person.” As far as all the other little things about him that annoy you a lot, you’ll have to find out whether they are really about him and whether you can accommodate them, or whether the annoyances are projected from your own sensitivities. If the annoyances are reflections of your own judgments, then looking for another partner won’t make it any easier for you. You’ll still need to look at what is annoying within yourself that is making you blame it on someone else. novemBeR 2016 | Perfect Woman

MAGIC OF
GRATITUDE ! I was introduced to being in GRATITUDE, in 1989 when I did the course Siddha Samadhi Yoga (SSY). This was imparted to me by my master Guruji Shree Rishi Prabhakar Ji on how to live a life of gratitude for all that we have, rather than crave for things we don’t. Being in gratitude 24*7*365 has transformed my life magically!
PW, By Manoj Lekhi
As Rhonda Byrne in her book “The Magic” puts it, “Whoever has gratitude will be given more, and he or she will have an abundance. Whoever does not have gratitude, even what he or she has will be taken from him or her” How true the statement is! This is the universal law. The law of attraction or the law of karma states that what we give is what we receive. What we give, we receive back a 100 fold, similarly if we complain then we receive that too 100 fold. In all RELATIONSHIPS it is about what we see in each other. For instance in a husband/wife relationship, if they are continuously nagging & picking at each other then they have mastered the art of fault-finding in each other. This would only increase the distance between them. If both are able to appreciate the uniqueness of each other and be in gratitude with each other their relationship will blossom and the love factor will increase moment to moment. This is the reason why friendships last long. If a husband and wife can make their bonding like that of a friend, it would elevate to a different level of relationship! 72 Perfect Woman | NOVEMBER 2016

Gratitude is our basic nature, it is our birth right and our natural way of living. This is the how nature works, it is all about giving, giving and giving. We see the sun that keeps on giving light to whomsoever comes under it. When we break our leg and go to the doctor the doctor simply puts the plaster and instructs us that “Let nature take care of it.” So again nature is always forgiving. If one forgives, then gratitude happens magically! Gratitude cannot happen without forgiveness. Most people find it very difficult to forgive people, events and situations and even their own selves. But when one does forgive then one feels tremendous lightness and experiences relentless freedom. FORGIVENESS is another important aspect in inculcating harmonious Relationships! Forgiveness is a natural state of a person who has taken total responsibility of his/her life. Once we take full responsibility forgiveness happens naturally. It is when we don’t take responsibility, and we pass the buck to each other that constraints may be felt in our relationships whether it is husband/wife, parent/child, boss/employee etc. There are two ways to live in life. One is “I am responsible”, and the other is pointing a finger to the other and saying “He/She is responsible”. This is the first lesson I learnt in the SSY programme. That I AM RESPONSIBLE
for all the things that happen in my life! This transformed me deeply and forgiveness naturally happened. Once forgiveness happens then gratitude naturally happens. And the more we live in gratitude the more we attract beautiful things around us. Relationships blossom when we are in gratitude. 2 brothers liking each other, appreciating each other will take that relationship to better stages. 2 partners appreciating each other, being in gratitude of each other will take the business to beautiful heights. 2 lovers appreciating each other will elevate their relationship to another blissful level. Finally a Guru and a disciple relationship is based on the disciple being in total gratitude/ surrenderfullness to his Guru. If we wish to take any relationship to the next level the magical way is through gratitude!
This changes our perspective immediately and brings about an instant shift within our own self. This approach of being in gratefulness in every moment of our life has an invaluable effect on all our Relationships. We soon start experiencing a unique oneness with all people around us. We attract situations and events in our lives which resonate with our energies. We attract more beautiful people and souls around us. The truth is a happy relationships starts with YOU! When you bring positivity and gratitude into the relationship your relationship will flourish. When both partners see the good in another, feel appreciative and in gratitude toward each other, the relationship is filled with connection, harmony and true love. TRUE LOVE is CONDITIONS.

GURUBHAI
Direction: Ajay Devgn Cast: Ajay Devgn, Abigail Eames, Erika Kaar, Sayyeshaa Saigal, Girish Karnad Story: Shivaay (Ajay Devgn), a fearless Himalayan mountaineer covered in Lord Shiva tattoos, heads to Bulgaria to fulfil his nine-yearold daughter Gaura’s (Abigail Eames) wish of seeing her mother Olga (Erika Kaar), who abandoned them years ago. But their plan goes for a toss when the little girl gets kidnapped in the foreign land. Rescuing her from the masked child-traffickers becomes his only reason for survival. On heart-pounding beats of Bolo Har Har, Shivaay has a spectacular opening scene that sees Ajay descending dangerous Himalayan cliffs like a pro. The stunning cinematography captures the mountains like no Hindi film has managed so far. You feel you are in for an adrenaline pumping ride and expect a nerveracking survival drama to unfold in the hills, on the lines of ‘Cliff hanger’ or ‘Vertical Limit’. The abduction of his daughter turns our chillumsmoking cool trekker into an angry killer, who vows to bust the flesh trade racket in Bulgaria. Soon high-octane, gravity and death-defying action sequences take centre stage, which are on par with the Hollywood films. An extended car-chase sequence is outstanding. However, the film has its issues, biggest being its run-time (3 hours) and thus, poor editing. Ajay, who is perhaps in every frame of the film doesn’t know where to stop as a director. Scenes linger on forever, nullifying their own significance. His wish to incessantly harp on the ‘father-daughter drama’ makes his action thriller dreary, an odd mishmash of multiple genres that leaves you exhausted. Boasting of great production values, we wish Ajay had invested in a better story as
well. You don’t feel for the characters or their ordeal. His quick romance with Hindi-speaking Olga, which blossoms in a dim-lit falling tent is preposterous. Sayyeshaa Saigal makes a decent Hindi debut. Girish Karnad, who plays her father, ends up being the unintentional comic relief, owing to his inappropriate, corny dialogues. Overall, Ajay is unstoppable in Shivaay but you wish he wasn’t! Laced with visual excellence, you applaud his film’s larger than life canvas but despite the efforts, his second directorial venture fails to engage you emotionally. NOVEMBER 2016 | Perfect Woman

Pet care during festive season
Even the most confident dogs can be scared of fireworks Yes, your happy go lucky pet could be trembling shaking and barking more during the coming Diwali celebrations at your home. The sad part is that sometimes we don’t even care to give a thought to their suffering. However, it is important to understand that dogs and cats have stronger hearing power. So what we perceive to be loud is even louder and unbearable for the pets. In addition, dogs are also sensitive to vibrations caused by loud noises. Therefore, one needs to take extra care of pets during Diwali season. - Dr. Kallahalli , Waltham Scientific Communication Manager, South Asia, Mars India.
All these and more are the signs that clearly communicate that your Dog could well be scared during the fireworks. Signs of stress or fear may include shaking, trembling, barking, howling, excessive drooling or hiding when fireworks are being let off. The best way to prevent problems Make sure that your dog is well socialised as a puppy, allowing him to hear lots of different sounds and have lots of different experiences, always in a positive way. This will help to prevent the problem in the first place. However, some dogs will still develop fears of fireworks and so it is up to their owners to ensure they do everything they can to make their dog feel safe and secure when fireworks are being let off. However, with Diwali just round the corner there is hardly any time to help solve problems related to fear of fireworks as treatment programmes require lots of time and patience and may take many months to effectively complete. There are a number of things you can do to help your dog cope with fireworks going off and minimise how scary the situation may be to him. According to Dr. Kallahalli Umesh, Waltham Scientific Communication Manager, South Asia, Mars India, “Diwali is a crucial time when our pets get a bit confused with the 88 Perfect Woman | NOVEMBER 2016

a Keep windows shut and curtains drawn to mask sounds and flashes from fireworks a Turn up the volume on the television or radio to help mask the sounds of fireworks a Keep your dog distracted by playing with him or giving treats like Pedigree or Dentastix a Do not comfort your dog if he is showing fearful behavior as this may actually reinforce the behavior. Act normally, as if there is nothing at all to be afraid of and reward your dog when he is calm and not looking afraid a Never punish your dog in any way for being afraid a Provide your dog with a suitable safe place where he can hide and do not disturb him when he goes into this area a If your pet is extremely sensitive to noise then slowly accustom him to have cotton in the ears a Prefer using natural therapy to calm your dog. Bach flower extracts and lavender oil are helpful in milder cases
a Some people force their pets to be close to the sounds that are frightening. Don’t do that you will only end up freighting your pet even more. In an attempt to leave the situation the pet will become aggressive a Once you get past Diwali it is a good idea to start thinking about desensitizing your dog to fireworks so that he can cope better the next time a Desensitization programs will not just work overnight and require lots of time and patience to be effective a You can buy CDs or tapes of fireworks sounds to help with this. These should initially be played at a very low volume so you can barely hear them a While playing the sounds give your dog something enjoyable such as his Pedigree food, a treat or simply play with him. Repeat this for short periods several times per day a As long as your dog shows no negative reactions you can very gradually increase the volume over progressive sessions. With time your dog should stop associating the sounds with something scary and will begin to associate them with pleasant experiences such as eating a It may help in more serious cases to seek expert advice to help deal with these problems. The best way to find help is to ask you vet who can then give you an individual treatment program tailored to you and your dog
a In extreme cases your vet may suggest prescribing drug treatment to help your dog cope with his fear of fireworks a Remember, drug treatment should only be used with veterinary advice. However, this is just a temporary solution and will not actually cure the problem. It is important to seek expert advice to help desensitize your dog to the sound of fireworks Do’s and Don’ts for stray animals during Diwali a Do not tease them by tying crackers in their tails. Our fun can lead to the poor animal’s death a Do not throw lighted crackers on them. Also do not flung puppies or kittens into burning crackers. They can suffer significant burns and body damage a Do not terrorise them, induced with fear they may run into the traffic and get injured a Bring to the notice of local / concern authorities in case you find a injured animal in your locality or on road a Help any animals on the road into your garden or garage and put food and water for them a Volunteer with a shelter homes for stray animals and help them for any emergencies a Burst crackers in a limited and a centralized location so that animals can be restricted or kept away from the place during the fireworks. novemBeR 2016 | Perfect Woman

1. There is never a moment that I do not think of you. So when you think of me, smile knowing that in that very moment we are together at least in thought. 2. Even on the days where the distance seems too be too much I remind myself why I am waiting for you and then it doesn’t seem so bad. 3. It’s not gonna be easy. It’s gonna be really hard. We’re gonna have to work at this every day, but I want to do that because I want you. I want all of you, forever, you and me, every day. 4. I love no one but you, I have discovered, but you are far away and I am here alone. Then this is my life and maybe, however unlikely, I’ll find my way back there. Or maybe, one day, I’ll settle for second best. And on that same day, hell will freeze over, the sun will burn out and the stars will fall from the sky. 5. The longer the wait, the sweeter the kiss. 6. It feels good to think about you when I’m warm in bed. I feel as if you’re curled up there beside me, fast asleep. And I think how great it would be if it were true. 7. On silent nights when friends are few, I close my eyes and think of you. A Silent night, a silent tear a silent wish that you were here. 8. Being close is the first and last desire of lovers, but being far and loving each other without an inch’s difference is the characteristic of real love. 9. Absence is to love what wind is to fire; it extinguishes the small, it inflames the great. 10. Distance between two hearts is not an obstacle; rather a beautiful reminder of just how strong true love can be. 11. There are no goodbyes for us. Wherever you are, you will always be in my heart. 12. “But I must admit, I miss you quite terribly. The world is too quiet without you nearby.” 13. Maybe, it’s not the distance that’s the problem, but how you handle it. 14. Long distance love is strong and strengthens because it is real. 15. Even when we’re miles and miles apart, you’re still holding all of my heart. 16. Love will travel as far as you let it. It has no limits. 17. ‘I believe in the immeasurable power of love; that true love can endure any circumstance and reach across any distance.’ 18. Never give up on something you really want. It’s difficult to wait, but it’s more difficult to regret. 19. Distance doesn’t matter if two hearts are loyal to each other. 20. If ever there is tomorrow when we’re not together… there is something you must always remember. You are braver than you believe, stronger than you seem, and smarter than you think. But the most important thing is, even if we’re apart… I’ll always be with you. novemBeR 2016 | Perfect Woman 101
PW SPOTLIGHT Face of the Month
Dazzling Beauty…
Paris Keswani
Born in pink city of India Jaipur, Paris Keswani 37 yrs, from the city of New York wearing confidence, a wife ,a mom and now a pageant winner is all set to pursue her life goals to be a super model. An exclusive chat with Perfect Woman where she shares her journey till now. - PW, Being myself, my confidence, determination, focus helped me to be where I am today and I don’t compare myself with anyone it was a tough competition. There was so much talent everywhere once you start comparing yourself with others that’s when you loose your focus and get distracted. So the key was to be myself and do my best. What are your future plans as Mrs India? Do you want to try in Bollywood or TV industry?
How did the Mrs. India contest happen? I have been volunteering since 2004 I am a member at UNICEF, United Nations Environmental Programme, New York Cares and I opened Prince foundation after my son Prince was born. Where we feed 200 homeless people every week and visit senior home and we run book, blanket and a toy drive every year. When I came across this contest I applied it without even thinking for a second because this is not just a beauty pageant it is beauty with a cause and I want to say Thank You to our national directors Mrs Ritika Vinay Asia Pacific and Mr. Vinay Yadawa for creating such a beautiful platform for all the married women and giving them an opportunity to come forward and make their dreams come true. Was it difficult to break the stereotype that women should only look after their home and children? I have a very supportive and understanding family. When I first applied for this contest I honestly didn’t tell anyone there were 2000 plus people applied for this pageant and we all were given various tasks like planting, writing blogs, phone interviews, video interviews, photo shoots, introduction video and many more and that’s how they found their 41 contestants and I was one of them. So, after I became a finalist I told my whole family and my whole family was so proud of me, my parents live in Los Angeles they flew to New York to help me with my son. My husband took time off from work to Take care of our son. Did everything I do every day take him to school pick him up, his extra classes, 102 Perfect Woman | NOVEMBER 2016
his food, homework. Which was amazing. Even my son Prince who is 6-year-old wished me the best and said Mama go get the Crown. Who is your inspiration? My mother is my inspiration, she is strong, loving, kind, caring very giving she gives unconditional love to everyone, she Encourages me all the time. She is an inspiration and a blessing for me. Whatever I am today is because of her What all preparations you did before participating the in the contest? As soon as I got the news of being a finalist.. I was happy and had a lot of things on mind to prepare myself for the contest. I hired a fitness trainer Dee Hudson she helped me to get fit & toned. I started looking for a pageant coach every top pageant coach I contacted in the United States said they are not aware of Indian pageant system and they all gave me one name and that name was Ritika Ramtri at The Tiara I googled her name and called her right away and I was lucky enough to get a seat in Sept Batch, I got to India on sept 13th, I got trained at The Tiara by Ms. Ritika Ramtri she is not just a pageant or modelling coach she is a life coach. She is the Master in Indian Pageant system. I learned so much from her she is truly amazing. Subas Dhang prepared me for my talent round, Shilpa Gupta Designed my traditional Round Outfit My long evening gown was by designer Mc Duggal, accessories by Rajiv Dhingra in Khan Market. I got pageant shoes from Chinese Laundry What do you think were your prime qualities that helped you win the contest?
As you know I am a jewellery designer so I am designing a line with made out of 100% recycled materials which will help the environment I am planning on launching the new jewellery line by Treasures of Prince before Christmas all the proceeds from that line will go to the projects to improve & protect the environment. PW REVIEWS Vastu

KITCHEN REFLECTS THE SOUL OF FAMILY MEMBERS Kitchen reflects the soul of family members. As the kitchen forms an integral part of the house, the science of Vastu steps to enhance the aura of the kitchen, taking into consideration certain essential elements. These include the direction, in which the kitchen is located, placements of the windows and doors in the kitchen, location of the kitchen in the house, placement of electronic gadgets, gas cylinder, refrigerator and even the sink. South-East Corner For The Kitchen It would be ideal if the kitchen was made in the south-east corner of the house. If not, another great option is the northwest corner of the house. The south-east corner is considered the best as the element of fire governs in this direction. Hence, it is the best option for making the kitchen. Placement Of Gas Stove The cooking gas is almost as essential as the placement of the kitchen in the house. Therefore, it too should be in the south-east direction. This is because when a person cooks food they should be facing to the east only. Place The Sink And Taps Away From The Cooking Gas Sinks and taps in the kitchen indicate flowing water. They should be placed in the north-east direction and away from the cooking stove. This is because fire and water are opposite elements and they repel each other. Placement Of The Refrigerator If the kitchen houses the refrigerator then it should be placed in the south-west direction but be kept at least a foot away from the corner. Avoid placing it in the north-east direction. Placement Of Exhaust Fans And Windows Windows are important too as Vastu Shashtra says that one or two windows in the kitchen are a must! An air hole or an exhaust is a must and it should be placed in the east in the kitchen. Windows – large or small should be placed in the east while if there are ventilators, it should be placed in the southern direction. Placement Of Electrical Appliances The modern kitchen is incomplete without electronic appliances. Today, the kitchen is filled with ovens, microwaves, heaters etc. These should be placed in the south or the south-east direction of the kitchen. Please note, these appliances should never be placed in the north-east direction. Placement Of Storage Storage is an important part of the kitchen too. We need storage for food grains, crockery, utensils etc. The storage cupboards should be made on the southern or western walls in the kitchen. It is best to avoid the north and east side walls. Placement Of Drinking Water Vessels Drinking water vessels, be it an earthen pot, filter, RO, pitcher etc. these should be placed in the north-east side. Kitchen Flooring Ceramic tiles, marble or mosaic are great options for kitchen flooring. They are practical too as they are hard, impermeable and of course, resistant to scratches. Use Of Colour Avoid using the colour black in the kitchen and opt for vibrant colours such as yellow, rose, chocolate brown, green, orange or red. Placement Of Kitchen In The House Ensure that your kitchen doesn’t share a wall with the toilet or bathroom. Plus, in multi-storey homes, it is important to ensure that the kitchen is never made below a bathroom or toilet.
