It took almost a month for you to send the Union Home Minister (Amit Shah) to the state. Eight days after Home Minister’s departure, violence continues in Manipur. For a proponent of the so-called ‘Act East’ policy for Northeast India, your stoic silence on violence in Manipur is rubbing salt in the wounds of its people.

Child abuse case: KUD objects granting contract work to accused
DIMAPUR, JUN 10
(NPN): Konyak Union
Dimapur (KUD) has expressed disappointment over the contract work (beautification of Super Market area Dimapur), which was allegedly allotted to Ronika and Amos Ezung-- the two accused who are out on bail in connection with the physical abuse of three minors at Namgalong Colony, Burma Camp Dimapur last year.
In a press release, Konyak Union Dimapur president Mosa Konyak and general secretary M Jeange Yanlem reminded that on October 31, 2022 it came
to light how three Konyak minors, who were brought from Longwa village were physically and mentally tortured by Ronika and her accomplice Amos.
KUD said it had strongly opposed granting bail to the two accused, but the duo was released by the District Court in December 2022.
The union said the case which was very strong against them was still in the court with the hearing coming up in the month of July.
Even as Konyak people were still in the state of shock and disbelief, the union said contract work
was allotted to the two accused for beautification of Dimapur city and to build Acupressure Park in Super Market area.
In this regard, KUD has appealed to the Development Authority of Nagaland to withdraw the contract work allotted to them till justice delivered by the court.
KUD also appealed to all the Nagas to stand with the Konyaks as they seek justice over what Ronika and Amos had done to their children.
While questioning as to how Ronika and Amos were allotted such proj -

KOHIMA, JUN 10 (NPN): Following the joint appeal by the Angami Public Organisation (APO) and Kohima Village Council (KVC) to Naga Club (NC) and Naga Students’ Federation (NSF) to allow “any willing and voluntary third party” to mediate for restoring normalcy and bring about a meaningful reconciliation outside of the legal court at the earliest, the NSF said that it was considering their appeal.
While acknowledging APO and KVC, as two respected organizations in the State, NSF vice presi-
dent Atokiho Sumi said the federation has taken note and was considering their appeal.
However, Atokiho said that the federation will take an appropriate decision during the emergency Federal Assembly or Presidential Council meeting of the federation, which will be held soon.
He further said that the federation will continue to function from the makeshift office setup outside the Naga Club building.
It may be mentioned that the APO and KVC said they were “deeply conscious of the likely long-term consequences”
if the conflicts remained unresolved and inevitably become subjected to provocations and counter provocations. They also appealed to both the parties to “cease issuing press statements, say or do anything against each other which may only aggravate the situation.” Further, they requested the Naga Club not to take up any activity at the site “if the current volatile public sentiments for and against.” APO and KVC also requested NSF to “withdraw FIR soonest possible” as a good gesture to find an amicable solution acceptable and honourable to both the parties.
ect, the union wondered how people with such cruel mind of torturing innocent children would even have the heart to carry out anything positive for Dimapur city and the citizens of Dimapur.
Konyak Union Dimapur also pointed out that the victims were still in so much pain and turmoil and were yet to recover.
“The wound is still fresh and the people of Konyak are still in pain over what Ronika and Amos had done to our children..The children are still far from their mental and physical recovery,” KUD said.
DIMAPUR, JUN 10
(NPN): Welcoming the Manipur Naga MLAs coming forward with proposals for peace, the former president of Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee (NPCC) has, however, said that Manipur chief minister N. Biren Singh “must be stopped from conducting mayhem in Manipur” if one really wanted to bring peaceful solution.
In a press release, K
Therie alleged that Manipur CM was responsible for the loss of nearly 100 lives and the suffering of tens of thousands of civilians for no fault of theirs. Therie said Biren Singh has lost command over Kukis and has also lost command and respect of all sensible citizens. Former NPCC chief said that Biren Singh’s continuation would only worsen the situation. “If not, you are a party to crimes against humanity,” Therie said.
Meanwhile, commenting on the Naga MLAs meeting with Union home minister Amit Shah, Therie said their demand “not to touch Hill areas in the event of arranging separate Administration for Kukis”, conveyed ‘no objection’ to creation of separate administration, which he claimed implies disintegration of Manipur state. “This is because as per the Constitution, there cannot be separate administration without UT or State,” Therie said.
Further, he said that Naga MLAs’ message was silent about the demand for tribal status by Meiteis. “It means the delegates approve the granting of Scheduled Tribe status to Meiteis,” he claimed. Therie said the third issue was that Nagas of Manipur would be within Manipur State, if not relocated in the ongoing peace process. “I stand corrected if
my analysis on the statement are wrong,” he said. Stating that Manipur peoples’ pain was “our pain”, he said everyone was concerned and wanted restoration of peace.
Therie hoped that leaders and thinkers sit across the tables and realign the discrepancies if any.
“Protect each other’s interests. It may be Meites, Kukis or Nagas, the truth is, all are inseparable neighbours,” he added.
Although it may not be at the cost of inherent rights and future, it is also our responsibility to be positive to each other. He said investigation teams were cannot resolve the political issues as they were meant to bring criminals to book. Therefore, Therie said it was the duty of political leaders to rise up together, put heads together to resolve the problem.

“Swami Vivekananda had said that in your country the tailor makes the man.
In our country, character makes the man,” said Singh, evoking applause from the crowds.
The BJP leader said that he was in full agreement with India being a secular country, but added, “By dharma, we do not mean places and forms of worship but the entire way of life. Our dharma teaches us to value all life forms. Even a poisonous snake is fed with the milk of cows.”
Underscoring the importance of ‘sanskaar’ (values), Singh referred to an article by Thomas Friedman in which the American commentator had pointed out how both Indian IT giant Infosys and the global terrorist organisation Al Qaeda depended on highly educated youth.
“It was sanskaar that made all the difference.

All should embrace education policy in letter and spirit: Dharmendra Pradhan
BHUBANESWAR, JUN 10 (AGENCIES): Dharmendra Pradhan, Union Minister for Education, today, urged that the National Education Policy (NEP) should be embraced by all in letter and spirit while congratulating the newly recruited faculties in Bhubaneswar.
“NEP is a philosophy. All of us should embrace and implement in letter and spirit to realise the goal of a modern, culturally-rooted, developed India,” tweeted Pradhan while speaking after inaugurating the Virtual and Augmented Reality Centre of Excellence at IIT Bhubaneswar.
Inaugurating the Virtual and Augmented Reality Centre of Excellence at IIT Bhubaneswar Pradhan said “This CoE will acceler-
ate digital transformation across disciplines, invigorate application-driven research as well as boost entrepreneurship.”
He also reviewed academic programs of higher education institutions in Odisha and tweeted, “Always a learning experience coming to our IITs. It always gives us new energy, and inspiration and ignites the learner within. Encouraged the @ iitbbs family to undertake a
massive plantation drive for making the campus green and sustainable.”
Speaking on the occasion Pradhan said that he was glad to be among the academic fraternity of IIT Bhubaneswar and congratulated all the newly recruited faculties. Pradhan encouraged them to instil social responsibilities in young minds and also prepare them to become global citizens in line with the tenets of the National Education Policy (NEP).
IIT Bhubaneswar intends to augment the existing experimental facilities and establish two pioneering centres, one for materials characterization, processing and manufacturing and the other for a Centre of Excellence for Laboratory Grown Diamonds, said officials.
On the other hand, so many youngsters have successfully transformed their start-ups into unicorns,” said Singh.
The veteran politician, who had worked as a lecturer of Physics in his early days, peppered his speech with many examples from Algebra and Geometry to pique the interest of the young crowd.
He also narrated a personal anecdote to emphasise the point that students continue to have respect for their teachers no matter the heights they go on to scale themselves.
“I once had the fortune to serve as the education minister of Uttar Pradesh. Once I was travelling to my home town when I spotted an old Moulvi, standing by the roadside, carrying a garland. I recalled he was the man who had taught me while I was a child. He used to be strict and did not spare the rod when needed. I stopped the car, got down and touched his feet,” said Singh, who also had a brief stint as chief minister of the northern state.
Conference Vice President Omar Abdullah on Saturday hinted at his party staying away from the grand alliance against the BJP in next year’s general elections, saying most such parties remained silent when Article 370 was abrogated. He also said the talks on a pre-poll alliance in Jammu and Kashmir would be premature before the sounding of bugle for the assembly elections in the Union Territory.
“What we have (to contribute) outside Jammu and Kashmir? We have a total of five (Lok Sabha) seats and what storm these seats can create? We have to fight against the BJP on these seats and what is going outside J&K is a secondary question,” Abdullah told reporters on reaching the border district of Rajouri. The former chief minister was responding to a question on the possibility of the National Conference joining hands with other parties against the BJP in the run up to the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.
“Compulsions aside, I do not see any benefit from such an alliance for the party and Jammu and Kashmir. I am repeatedly saying that when they need us, they knock on our doors. When (Delhi Chief Minister Arvind) Kejriwal is in trouble, he needs our support but where were these leaders in 2019 when we faced a big deceit,” he said, referring to the abrogation of Article 370 and bifurcation of J&K into the Union Territories of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh by the central government.
Abdullah asked who among them stood with the people of Jammu and Kashmir. “Where were those who are raising hue and cry today for safeguarding the Constitution and de -
mocracy when we faced the murder of democracy. They did not speak against it and the fact of the matter is that they supported the move (in Parliament),” the former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister said.
However, he said there are only four parties – DMK, Mamata Banerjeeled TMC and two Left parties - “which always stood with the people of Jammu and Kashmir”.
“Leave these parties aside, show me someone among other parties who wholeheartedly supported us. We will fight against the BJP on our five seats, let them do whatever they want to,” Abdullah said.
On the possibility of a pre-poll alliance ahead of assembly elections in J&K, he said the question is premature as elections are nowhere visible.
“Let the election bugle be sounded, we will sit together to take a call on this. The opinion or decision of one person is not acceptable, all the leaders of the party (NC) will discuss the issue, weigh its pros and cons and reach a consensus,” he said.
India’s debt under Modi govt risen to Rs 155L cr: Cong
NEW DELHI, JUN 10 (PTI): The Congress on Saturday alleged that India’s debt has nearly “tripled” to Rs 155 lakh crore in the nine years under Prime Minister Narendra Modi and demanded a white paper on the state of the economy.
Congress spokesperson Supriya Shrinate alleged the Modi government’s “economic mismanagement” is responsible for the present state of the economy and claimed that Rs 100 lakh crore of debt has been added since the present dispensation assumed charge in 2014.
“As chief minister of Gujarat, Mr Modi used to blame those on the other side of the political spectrum as inefficient, incompetent and corrupt -- adjectives that today suit him
and his government more than anyone else because economic mismanagement of this government has led to a ruined Indian economy. It resulted in high prices, inflation, and high unemployment and has now resulted in a massive debt burden that the country is facing.
“After ruining India’s economic growth story, creating huge unemployment, raging inflation, Mr Modi has done the un -
thinkable, which is an addition of over Rs 100 lakh crore to India’s debt, which is at an alarming level,” she said at a press conference.
The Congress leader further said India’s debt in 2014 was at Rs 55 lakh crore, which has now gone past Rs 155 lakh crore. She claimed that India’s debt under 14 prime ministers in 67 years was Rs 55 lakh crore while Modi alone has increased it by over Rs 100 lakh crore.
“Economic management is not the same thing as headline management.
The Indian economy cannot be managed by managing headlines. It cannot be done through teleprompters and definitely not through WhatsApp forwards. The Indian economy will have to be managed by sound economic
managers who don’t want to hog the limelight. Who wants to do the work and fix the Indian economy and ensure that prosperity reaches every part of India?
“We demand a white paper on the Indian economy because the fault lines are only getting deeper,” she said.
Shrinate also claimed that the bottom 50 per cent of Indians who own three per cent of the country’s wealth paid 64 per cent of the GST collected. The richest 10 per cent, on the other hand, own 80 per cent of the country’s wealth but pay only three per cent of the GST collected.
India has the costliest LPG cylinder, the third costliest petrol and the eighth costliest diesel in the world, Shrinate claimed.
Trump vrs Republicans
In2024, voters in the USA will choose their next president at the 60th quadrennial presidential election, scheduled for Tuesday, November 5, 2024. Voters will elect a president and vice president for a term of four years. Incumbent President Joe Biden, a member of the Democratic Party, is running for re-election. His predecessor Donald Trump, a member of the Republican Party, is running for re-election to a second, non-consecutive term. The victor of this election is scheduled to be inaugurated on January 20, 2025. The US election is a complex system where voters cast their vote for the candidate of their choice but the tally (popular vote) does not determine the winner. Instead, the voters choose the electoral college or representatives. The larger the population, the larger the total number of electoral votes and the candidate who wins at least 270 out of 538 votes of the electoral college is elected as President. If this number is not reached in the Electoral College, the House of Representatives elects the president. The newly elected President takes the presidential oath on January 20. While incumbent president Joe Biden of the Democratic Party will stand for re-election; the Republican Party, besides former president Donald Trump has so far ten high-profile Republican candidates officially seeking their party’s nomination.
Trump has always harboured the feeling that he was cheated in 2020 and has made no bones that he will run for the president in 2024. Even before his party could assess the situation, Trump launched his campaign nearly seven months ago in an effort to scare off potential challengers. As of now, Trump is running in a field that features no fewer than nine high-profile challengers. They include Mike Pence, his former vice president; four current or former governors: Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum, former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie and former Arkansas Gov. Asa Hutchinson; Nikki Haley, trump’s former ambassador to the UN and also a former South Carolina governor; U.S. Sen. Tim Scott of South Carolina; biotech entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy; and conservative talk show host Larry Elder, an unsuccessful candidate for California governor. At least four candidates of color are seeking the presidency : Scott and Elder are Black, while Haley and Ramaswamy are of Indian descent. For Haley and Scott in particular, race plays a central role in their pitch to voters, although all four deny the existence of systemic racism and largely oppose federal policies designed to help people based on the color of their skin. Trump is the oldest at 76, while Ramaswamy is the youngest at 37. DeSantis is just 44, while Haley and Scott are in their 50s. The rest of the candidates are in their 60s and 70s. Trump is still dominating early primary polls, despite his extraordinary legal troubles. Trump nonetheless maintains a strong grip on a significant portion of the Republican base that has yet to see it dwindling. The predicament in the Republican Party is going to cost the party dear in 2024 since Trump will be the spoilsport. Though he has the widest support within the party, yet he is most unlikely to beat Biden in 2024. Biden is already senile but he is not what the other America wants but the latter is certain about not wanting the disruptive Trump as the next president.

And After That What’s Next To Do?
…seek, and you will find… —Luke 11:9
Seek if you have not found. “You ask and do not receive, because you ask amiss…” (James 4:3). If you ask for things from life instead of from God, “you ask amiss”; that is, you ask out of your desire for self-fulfillment. The more you fulfill yourself the less you will seek God. “… seek, and you will find….” Get to work— narrow your focus and interests to this one thing. Have you ever sought God with your whole heart, or have you simply given Him a feeble cry after some emotionally painful experience? “…seek, [focus,] and you will find….”
“Ho! Everyone who thirsts, come to the waters…” (Isaiah 55:1). Are you thirsty, or complacent and indifferent— so satisfied with your own experience that you want nothing more of God? Experience is a doorway, not a final goal. Beware of building your faith on experience, or your life will not ring true and will only sound the note of a critical spirit. Remember that you can never give another person what you have found, but you can cause him to have a desire for it.
“…knock, and it will be opened to you” (Luke 11:9). “Draw near to God…” (James 4:8). Knock— the door is closed, and your heartbeat races as you knock. “Cleanse your hands…” (James 4:8). Knock a bit louder— you begin to find that you are dirty. “…purify your hearts…” (James 4:8). It is becoming even more personal— you are desperate and serious now— you will do anything. “Lament…” (James 4:9). Have you ever lamented, expressing your sorrow before God for the condition of your inner life? There is no thread of selfpity left, only the heart-rending difficulty and amazement which comes from seeing what kind of person you really are. “Humble yourselves…” (James 4:10). It is a humbling experience to knock at God’s door— you have to knock with the crucified thief. “…to him who knocks it will be opened” (Luke 11:10).

Indigenous languages of Eastern Nagas: A call for cultural justice
In Eastern Naga lands, melodies unfold, Languages ancient, stories untold, Protect and preserve, their essence so rare, Cultural treasures we must all share, With love and pride, let their voices be heard, Eastern Naga languages, our heritage assured.
The cultural diversity of Nagaland is rich and vibrant, with numerous indigenous tribes inhabiting the region. Each tribe has its unique language, which not only serves as a means of communication but also embodies its cultural heritage. However, there has been a concerning lack of attention and support from the Government of Nagaland towards preserving and protecting the endangered languages of the Eastern Naga Tribes. It is a call of the time to shed light on this issue and discuss the urgent need for policy measures to safeguard these valuable linguistic treasures.
As we can observe, the Government of Nagaland has primarily focused its efforts on promoting and preserving the Tenyidie language, which has a good number of speakers in the state. Various initiatives, such as running a Diploma Course and a full-fledged MA program in Tenyidie, Moreover, recently I have discovered a detailed syllabus for Bachelor of Arts Degree program (under Choice Based Credit System) in ‘Ao’ Language (elective and Honours), clearly highlights the government’s commitment and gigantic efforts to preserving these languages. While this endeavour is commendable, it is disheartening to note the lack of academic presence and support for the Eastern Naga languages like Chang, Sangtam, Konyak, Phom,
Irecently had the privilege of attending the funeral and memorial of a courageous man. Someone whose family I know well, though I never knew much about the man himself. This has been a recurring experience in my just over four decades of existence here on Earth. Experiencing pangs of regret for not having engaged in conversations with or not having known the one whose funeral I am attending. My most lucid memory is of attending a funeral as a teenager one cold day in Zunheboto town; it was of Ashu Lukhashe Chishi. I recognized his son because he was a wealthy, famous and a politician. Little did I know that the real man was the one he called his father. Even being so young, I wondered why I had little knowledge of him when I should have known much. Just the fact that he coined the word oshikimthi, ‘thank you’ in the Sumi tongue, had been enough to blow me away. I remember being glumly envious of my elder brother, who had interacted with him more by virtue of being friends with his grandson. Ashu Lukhashe was the one man who had dared to challenge my teenage elder brother as to whether he had assurance of his salvation as a child of God when his life journey comes to an end.
And when his politician son had remarked that he would pay him back for the money spent on his upbringing, Ashu Lukhashe had demanded that the payback be done in terms of the breast milk he had consumed from his mother. I safely presume that it was perhaps in a moment of heated conversation that such an exchange took place. Since then, I have heard numerous tales of
Yimkhuing, Khiamniungan, Tikhir, and others.
The neglect of Eastern Naga languages by the government represents a significant ‘Cultural Injustice’ against the Eastern Naga people. These languages are an integral part of their identity, history, and traditions. By failing to provide adequate visible resources and concrete support for their preservation, the government is contributing to the erosion of the rich linguistic heritage of these communities. Moreover, the fact cannot be ignored that ‘Cultural Injustice’ has also played a significant role in fueling the demand for ‘Frontier Nagaland’. The neglect and marginalisation of the Eastern Naga tribes by the government of Nagaland has created a deep sense of dissatisfaction and frustration among the people. The lack of attention given to the preservation and promotion of their indigenous languages, traditions, and cultural practices has perpetuated a sense of cultural injustice.
The Eastern Naga tribes, including the Chang, Sangtam, Konyak, Phom, Yimkhuing, Khiamniungan, and Tikhir, have a rich cultural heritage that too deserves recognition and protection. However, the government of Nagaland has primarily focused on the Tenyidie as well as Ao language, neglecting the linguistic diversity and heritage of the Eastern Naga tribes. This cultural imbalance has resulted in feelings of cultural alienation and exclusion. The demand for Frontier Nagaland also stems from the desire to address this cultural injustice (besides Economic injustice and overall gross violation of Constitutional Rights of the people in the region) and ensure that the voices and cultural
rights of the Eastern Naga tribes are well acknowledged and respected in real sense. The rise of ‘Frontier Naga Territory’- which i believe is not very distant-would provide an opportunity for these tribes to have more autonomy and control over their cultural affairs, including language preservation, cultural festivals, and traditional practices however, even then the Government of Nagaland will have to ensure the ‘Cultural Justice’ to the Eastern Naga people in spirit of the ‘Constitutional mandate’. Addressing the issue of cultural injustice is crucial for fostering a sense of inclusivity and equality among all Naga tribes. It requires the government of Nagaland to take serious measures on a war footing to protect and preserve the endangered languages and cultural heritage of the Eastern Naga tribes. By doing so, the government can work in collaboration with the Eastern Naga stakeholders towards promoting a more just and inclusive society as envisaged by the Founding Fathers of the Nation. Moreover, as understood, the issue of language protection and preservation is of paramount importance and therefore should be raised and discussed extensively in the legislative assembly of the state of Nagaland. It is crucial that the voices of the people from Eastern Nagaland, who have been affected by the neglect of their indigenous languages, are heard and their concerns addressed. The twenty MLAs representing Eastern Nagaland hold a significant responsibility in advocating for the best interests of the Eastern Naga people and ensuring cultural justice for their communities. They should take the initiative to bring this issue to the forefront
and garner support from their fellow legislators. By initiating discussions and proposing relevant legislation, these Eastern MLAs can emphasise the urgent need for language protection and preservation. They can highlight the cultural significance and historical importance of Eastern Naga languages, shedding light on the detrimental effects of their neglect. Through constructive dialogue and collaborative efforts, these MLAs can work towards developing comprehensive language protection policies, securing funding for preservation initiatives, and implementing educational programs that promote the use and awareness of Eastern Naga languages. It is essential that the legislative assembly acknowledges the significance of this issue and takes proactive measures to safeguard the linguistic heritage of the Eastern Naga people. By prioritising language protection and preservation, the Nagaland State Legislative Assembly can contribute to cultural justice and the overall development and well-being of the Eastern Naga communities.
Needless to mention that language plays a crucial role in shaping and preserving a community’s culture and identity. It encapsulates their unique worldview, knowledge systems, folklore, and oral traditions. Preserving indigenous languages is essential for maintaining cultural diversity, fostering intergenerational connections, and promoting a sense of belonging among community members. Furthermore, language preservation contributes to the overall social, psychological and emotional well-being of the Eastern Naga Tribes, reinforcing their self-esteem and cultural pride.
To rectify the current situation and protect the endangered languages of the Eastern Naga Tribes, the Government of Nagaland should take the following policy measures without any delay:
1. Linguistic Documentation: Establish dedicated research and documentation centres on war footing in every district of Eastern Nagaland to systematically record and document the vocabulary, phonetics, grammar, and oral traditions of the Eastern Naga languages. This would create valuable linguistic resources for future generations and aid in language revitalization efforts.
2. Educational Initiatives: Introduce and promote Eastern Naga languages as elective and honours courses at the undergraduate level in educational institutions. Also, various Certificate and Diploma courses in Sangtam, Chang, Konyak, Phom, Yimkhuing, Khiamniungan and Tikhir Language need to be introduced and popularised. Develop textbooks, teaching materials, and language proficiency tests to encourage language learning and proficiency among students.
3. Language Revitalization Programs: Organise national and international level workshops, seminars, and cultural events that focus on Eastern Naga languages. Encourage native speakers, elders, and language experts to actively participate in these programs and share their knowledge and experiences for the benefit of all.
4. Language Preservation Grants: Allocate funds (either independently or in collaboration with New Delhi) specifically for the preservation and promotion of Eastern Naga languages. Provide grants to local communities, organisations, and

dear Ashu Lukhashe from my father, but alas, I never got to interact in flesh and blood with the personality himself.
Coming back to the funeral in question, what struck me was the narration of his dear wife, Meneleü Chandola nee Kevichusa, Aunty Mene, as we lovingly call her, of how her husband, a pure-bred Brahmin from erstwhile Uttar Pradesh, now Uttarakhand, became a Naga. As part of the memorial audience, I learnt from his son Tarani’s account that as a war and conflict-zone reporter, he was a rare journalist with the gift, talent, and grit to do what journalists were meant to do. His first visit to Nagaland was in 1955, and he went on to marry Aunty Mene in 1960. In 1964, he was asked to join the Naga peace talks and became a friend of the Nagas. B.K. Nehru, then Governor of the State of Nagaland, complained that Uncle Harish Chandola had become an advisor for the underground and should not be allowed to stay in Nagaland. He was told that he needed an ILP to access his own home. An ILP (Inner Line Permit) is a travel document introduced by the British to protect natives from outside invasion, which became part of the inheritance thrown at us when they hurriedly left the nation and our part of the world. So, any non-Naga, and by default a non-native, was required to report to the administration and could not enter protected areas unless issued a permit. A Naga family led by Gokieso Meyase, from Aunty Mene’s native village, Khonoma, unhesitatingly adopted him as a son of the Angami tribe, formally offering him
their protection and that of the entire clan. Gokieso’s grandson Lhuvinyü Meyase sent a Vimho shawl all the way from the picturesque village perched on a hill to be placed on his father Harish Chandola’s mortal remains. This is a shawl worn only by a male who possesses a certain merit. In the past, this had to be a great warrior or someone who hosted a Feast of Merit.
Now, it is worn by persons who have some stature in society. For Harish Chandola, this was a mark of respect for a life well-lived, a sign that he still belonged to Khonoma and would not be forgotten by his adoptive family. The shawl, which is woven sacrificially, painstakingly, and intricately over a backstrap loom, assumed a greater significance, far beyond being a labour of love. Representing a profounder meaning, for it had moved Aunty Mene deeply, enough for her to have shared this critical and precious part of Uncle Harish Chandola’s life as she bade him farewell here on Earth.
In her write-up ‘Gendered Representation and Social Significance: Sumi Weaving and Handloom Traditions’ published in the book Objects, Identities, Meanings: Insider Perspectives from North East India, published in 2015 by Ambedkar University, Delhi, the researcher Dr Lovitoli Jimo brings out a pertinent point: ‘a shawl (aphi) or wraparound (amini) is not just a piece of clothing to cover oneself from nature or to beautify oneself, but a symbol of identity and status that communicates various socio-cultural and political meanings and values’. It is further explained that the different symbols,
designs and patterns woven into shawls and incorporated into wraps signified the social status earned by performing the avi (mithun/ Bos frontalis) sacrifice, giving successive Feasts of Merit or taking enemies’ heads in war. According to her research, amongst the Sumi Naga tribe, the Asu Kuda Phi was a shawl of the warriors and the most revered shawl. Not even chiefs and powerful personalities of the village were eligible to wear this shawl unless they qualified themselves a warrior by taking an enemy’s head. What our ancestors wore was art. A particular piece of clothing was worn because it was earned and the wearer was worthy of the beauty, the pattern and the design of that clothing, which came to be intrinsically associated with the person’s achievements and merit. The wearer qualified the clothing and not vice versa. Jimo notes that amongst the Sumi tribe, in the past, those who had not sacrificed an avi or feasted the village were not allowed to wear the Avi Kiyihie Phi, which literally translates to ‘the shawl of sacrifice and feasting with avi’. That those who attempted to wear the shawl without qualifying for it were ridiculed and laughed at. What they wore then transcended the tangible; it translated into social status, respect, honour and pride, creating a distinct elite club. Fashioning a class consciousness that was defined and determined by deeds that in the eyes of others were considered good and honourable. The basis of differentiation was integrity and character, causing the community to revere and accept such distinc -
researchers to undertake language-related projects, including the publication of dictionaries, textbooks, and language learning materials.
5. Collaboration and Partnerships: Foster concrete collaborations with linguistic experts, anthropologists, scholars, language enthusiasts and language preservation organisations to support the revitalization and preservation efforts. Seek assistance from national and international agencies to develop comprehensive language preservation strategies.
6. Public Awareness Campaigns: Launch public awareness campaigns to educate the general population about the importance of preserving indigenous languages. Highlight the cultural significance and unique aspects of Eastern Naga languages, encouraging pride and respect for linguistic diversity. Preserving and protecting the endangered languages of the Eastern Naga Tribes is not only a matter of cultural justice but also a responsibility towards maintaining the state’s rich heritage. The Government of Nagaland must acknowledge and address this issue promptly by implementing policy measures that prioritise the preservation and promotion of these languages. By investing in linguistic documentation, educational initiatives, revitalization programs, grants, collaborations, and public awareness campaigns, the government can ensure the survival and revitalization of Eastern Naga languages. Let us take immediate action to safeguard these linguistic treasures and honour the cultural legacy of the Eastern Naga Tribes.

This, however, does not in any manner challenge the brilliance of Gabrielle, who was raised in an orphanage in a remote village in central France. In an online work titled ‘From the Margins to the Core of Haute Couture: The Entrepreneurial Journey of Coco Chanel’, published by Cambridge University Press, Gino Cattani, Mariachiara Colucci and Simone Ferriani write that though ‘lacking a formal education and entering Parisian society as a mistress, she revolutionized the fashion industry by pioneering sportswear design and the use of textiles never seen before in haute couture dressmaking’. They note
that her innovation was not simply to remove the corset from the silhouette she completely transformed the female silhouette: she shortened dresses, revealed ankles, freed the waistline, cut women’s hair and bronzed their skin. She introduced black into haute couture, which was previously worn only to signify bereavement, turning it into an elegant colour that women could wear at any time. Perhaps my desire for a Chanel comes from, if nothing else, the fact that she created a storm by disrupting every known rigid norm of haute couture and elite society in Paris, the epicentre of the arts at the time. Sir, I shall be highly obliged if you kindly allow me a little space in the columns of your highly esteemed daily so that I can ventilate my opinion to draw the attention of the concerned authority about the poor electricity condition in the Ophthalmology Deptt, District Hospital Dimapur.
The Ophthalmology Dept. is a two Warded(male/ female) segment with 5 beds each at DHD. It does not have provision for Cabins like other Dept. With strict instructions to be very careful about fluid (water/sweat) entering the eye Post operation, and with the irregularity of electricity, which is nothing Alien to our state, it has become a very bleak and poor place for recovery.
In view of this, I think that the due authority should at least make arrangements to provide a single battery-operated inverter which can aid to the dilemma of the patients, otherwise the public grievance may at time lead to a dire consequence

Shah accuses Rahul of criticising India abroad
PATAN, JUN 10 (PTI):
Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Saturday accused Rahul Gandhi of criticising India and discussing its internal politics during his visits to foreign countries, and said the Congress leader should learn from his ancestors.
Shah said it does not suit any leader to criticise one’s own country abroad, and asked Gandhi to keep in mind that people of the country were watching him.
He was referring to Gandhi’s criticism of the Narendra Modi government during his recent tour of the USA.
“Any patriotic person should discuss Indian politics within India. It does not suit the leader of any party to go abroad and discuss the country’s politics and criticise the country. Rahul baba, you must remember that people of the country are watching it closely,” Shah said.
“Rahul baba is going abroad on a vacation to escape the summer heat. He
keeps criticising the country there. I would like to suggest Rahul Gandhi to learn from his ancestors,” he said.
Shah was addressing a rally at Siddhpur town in Patan district of Gujarat organised to mark nine years of the Modi government.
The country has witnessed huge changes under the Modi government, but Congress does not stop talking about anti-India things, he said.
Shah also attacked Gandhi over its criticism of the new Parliament building.
“You opposed the new
Parliament building and installation of ‘Sengol’, a historical sceptre from Tamil Nadu, there. The Sengol was to be installed by Jawaharlal Nehru. Modi is doing it because he (Nehru) did not do it, then why are you opposing?” he asked.
Congress leaders do not allow PM Modi to speak in Parliament and only keep opposing everything, Shah alleged, and added that the PM has started a new tradition of doing “politics of development”.
Shah also attacked Gandhi over the issues of Ram temple in Ayodhya
and the abrogation of Article 370.
Lord Ram’s temple at Ayodhya was desecrated since the time of Babar (founder of the Mughal empire), he said.
“But today, a grand temple of Lord Ram is under construction and it will be completed shortly,” he said. Praising PM Modi, Shah said the government worked towards improving the lives of Dalits, poor and tribals and made them capable.
“It was under the leadership of PM Modi that a tribal woman became the President of the country for the first time,” he said. Whether improving the economic condition or connecting the country digitally, implementing projects of social welfare, COVID-19 vaccination or infrastructure, India has become a centre of hope in the world, he said.
Referring to former PM Manmohan Singh and ex-Congress president Sonia Gandhi, Shah said,
“Comparing 10 years of Manmohan-Sonia to 10 years of Modi, one will find that the 10 years of the Congress-led government were marked by corruption, mismanagement, economic downfall, terrorism and poor law and order situation.”
The 10 years of the Modi government have been that of capable and safe digital India walking the path of social welfare, he said.
Shah urged the people of Gujarat to vote for the Bharatiya Janata party (BJP) to ensure that it wins all 26 Lok Sabha seats in Gujarat in the 2024 election.
“Narendrabhai started a new era of development in the country from Gujarat. The publicity of all-round development witnessed in Gujarat from 2002 till 2014 in terms of 24-hours electricity, water, check dam, farm, and girl education helped Modi become the prime minister and the ‘Gujarat model’ turned into the ‘India model’,” he said.
Pawar names Praful Patel, daughter Supriya as NCP working presidents
NEW DELHI, JUN 10
(PTI): NCP chief Sharad Pawar on Saturday declared Praful Patel and Supriya Sule working presidents of the party, marking a generational shift in the organisation and virtually sidelining nephew Ajit Pawar, who is known to display rebellious streaks.
Pawar made the announcement at a function to celebrate the 24th anniversary of the foundation of the Nationalist Congress Party here.
“Praful Patel will shoulder the responsibility of the Working President of the Nationalist Congress Party. Supriya Sule will also be the Working President of the party,” Pawar said in the presence of senior leaders including Ajit Pawar, Chhagan Bhujbal, Sunil Tatkare, Fouzia Khan, among others.

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Saturday said that there is no confusion regarding Griha Lakshmi and Griha Jyoti schemes, two among five guarantees which were promised in the Congress manifesto, and asserted his government will do what it had said.
Speaking to reporters in Bengaluru, Chief Minister asked how many promises were fulfilled by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, reports ANI.
Answering a reporter’s question about the guarantee schemes, he said that “we (the state government) would do what we had said (poll promises).” “Prime Minister Narendra Modi had made many promises but how many of them had been fulfilled?,” he questioned.
He said that he would be attending a program or-
ganized for party workers in his constituency to thank them. CM left for Mysuru later.
Legislators of Mysuru and Chamarajanagar districts will be participating in the program, he said.
Earlier, Siddaramaiah announced that all five guarantees will be implemented in the current financial year at a cost of approximately Rs 50,000 crore every year.
“We had a long consultation. It will be given in this financial year itself,” Siddaramaiah said earlier in the month.
The five ‘main’ guarantees, which Congress promised to fulfil after coming to power in Karnataka, were 200 units of free power to all households (Gruha Jyoti); Rs 2,000 monthly assistance to the woman head of every family (Gruha Lakshmi); 10 kg of rice free to every member of a BPL household (Anna Bhagya); Rs 3,000 every month for unemployed graduate youth and Rs 1,500 for unemployed diploma holders (both in the age group of 18-25) for two years (Yuva Nidhi) and free travel for women in public transport buses (Uchita Prayana).

(PTI): The Railway Board Saturday ordered a doublelocking arrangement for all relay rooms with train controlling mechanisms, relay huts housing signalling and telecommunications equipment of level-crossings, and point and track circuit signals, officials said.
The missive to the railway zones is the latest in a series of directions issued since the June 2 accident involving three trains in Odisha’s Balasore which killed more than 280 people.
The order indicates that the “access to the relay room” was key to the “signalling interference” that caused the Coromandel Express to take the loop line at Balasore and crash into a stationary goods train.
With enough evidence to show that some kind of tampering was done with the interlocking system, the job now is to make it “tamper-proof”, senior officials said. “This double locking will ensure that no one can access these locations in isolation,” said an officer.
The order said that level crossing gate (goomty/ cabin), housing signalling and telecommunications equipment in station yard, should be treated as a relay hut and till double-locking arrangement is provided, the key of the present single lock would be with the Station Master (SM).
“The relevant entries regarding issue and deposit of the key should be maintained by SM in the same manner as being done for
station relay room. The proforma for handing over/ taking back of the key by the ASM (assistant station manager) on duty shall have a column specifying that the location for which key had been taken by maintenance staff has been properly closed and locked, by the maintenance staff who is returning the key,” the order stated. Officials said one of the aspects that emerged from the preliminary probe is some work was going on near the location of the accident.
A disconnection memo (to shut down interlocking system and start work) and a reconnection memo (reconnection of the system indicating the end of work) was received by the station manager, they said.
However in reality, the technician bypassed the system because the work was not complete and he rigged the location box to get a “green signal” for the Coromandel Express, they said.
The present order, thus, laid down proper disconnection-reconnection protocols which are to be followed for signal maintenance, repairs, alteration works.
It said that after completion of any work, once the reconnection is accepted by the SM, for the first train, the reception signal (signals control the reception of trains into a station) should not be taken off and it shall be brought to a stop at the first stop signal.

Cong slams PM on rising airfares
NEW DELHI, JUN 10
(PTI): The Congress on Saturday expressed concern over the rising airfares and said PM’s words that those wearing ‘hawai chappals’ can now travel in airplanes sound like a “cruel joke”. The government had on Monday asked airlines to devise a mechanism to ensure reasonable airfares amid a surge in air ticket prices, particularly on certain routes that were earlier served by Go First. Congress general secretary organisation K C Venugopal said it was criminal to lift caps on airfares in August 2022 when the economy was in the “doldrums” and asked if the government has planned any
“intervention” to ensure that consumers do not suffer.
“PM famously said that those wearing ‘Hawai chappals’ can travel on a ‘Hawai Jahaaz.’ With DelhiMumbai flights crossing Rs. 15000 plus every day, his words sound like a cruel joke. “These skyrocketing airfares are creating havoc among the middle class. The govt’s complete free pass to the airlines, coupled with their rampant privatisation spree, is responsible for the dire situation today,” he alleged on Twitter. The Congress leader noted that the pricing algorithm will keep pushing the fares up in cases of demand-supply mismatch.

FinMin on same page with RBI for FY24 growth forecast: Nageswaran
KOLKATA, JUN 10 (PTI): Chief Economic Adviser V Anantha Nageswaran on Saturday said that the government is on the same page with the Reserve Bank of India on the GDP growth forecast for the current financial year which is 6.5 per cent.
RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das announced at the end of the monetary policy committee (MPC) meeting on Thursday that the GDP growth forecast for 2023-24 has been pegged at 6.5 per cent, a tad higher than the April forecast of 6.4 per cent. Speaking at a session organised by Bharat Chamber of Commerce here, Nageswaran said, “Both the ministry of finance and the RBI are on the same page with the growth forecast for the current fiscal which is 6.5 per cent with risks evenly balanced. The domestic eco-
V Anantha Nageswarannomic growth momentum is strong enough to overcome external risk factors”.
“We also benefit from lower oil prices and overall domestic macroeconomic stability,” he said.
The CEA said that during the last financial year, real GDP growth was 7.2 per cent, which was lower than the 9.1 per cent registered in the previous fiscal.
“However, I feel that the growth for the last fiscal will be much higher than 7.2 per cent,” Nageswaran said.
The CEA to the gov-
ernment said that India was the fastest growing among major economies with all high-frequency parameters for April signalling a good start during the first quarter of the current fiscal.
“With exports of goods and services as a percentage of GDP pegged at 23.5 per cent during the last financial year, the highest since 2015, private consumption and gross capital formation had increased in the last financial year after the pandemic.
Private consumption has been mainly driven by urban consumption, contributed largely by the release of pent-up demand, he said.
Speaking sectorally, Nageswaran said on agriculture that though there are concerns about the El Nino effect, the water reservoir storage is adequate in the country and enough availability of seeds and fertiliser stock is comfortable.

Sebi allows MFs to invest in repo transactions
On industry, he said that there are signals of capacity expansion taking place, uptick in construction activity as well as in cement and steel production. Alongside, the services sector is also growing with foreign tourist arrivals coming back to the pre-pandemic level and the hotel industry witnessing robust growth. There are also early signs of rural demand recovery, he added.
Nageswaran said with the strengthened balance sheets of the banking and corporate sectors, more investments will take place in the economy leading to growth in income and creation of employment. According to him, since India did not splurge fiscally during the pandemic but tailored schemes targetting the beneficiaries, the fiscal situation of the country remained better.

Trudeau visits Kyiv; announces aid
KYIV, JUNE 10
(AGEN-
CIES): Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced new military aid for Ukraine during an unannounced trip to wartime Kyiv on Saturday, as Ukraine braces for a counteroffensive against Russian forces and grapples with regular air strikes.
Trudeau paid his respects at a memorial site in central Kyiv to Ukrainian soldiers who have been killed fighting pro-Russian forces since 2014, and also met President Volodymyr Zelenskiy for talks.
“We will be there with (you) as much as it takes, for as long as it takes,” he said, sitting across from the Ukrainian leader in footage of the talks released by Kyiv authorities.
NATO member Canada, which has one of the world’s largest Ukrainian diasporas, has supplied military and financial assistance to Kyiv during the full-scale invasion launched by Russia in February 2022.
“Today, I can announce that we will provide 500 million dollars in new funding for military assis-

tance,” he told reporters at a joint press conference.
Ukraine wants to join the NATO military alliance as fast as it can, but Zelenskiy has said he recognised that cannot happen while the war with Russia is raging. “Canada supports Ukraine to become a NATO member as soon as conditions allow for it. Ukraine and Canada look forward to addressing these issues at the NATO Summit in Vilnius in July 2023,” said a joint declaration adopted after the talks. At the talks, Zelenskiy
said Ukraine was grateful to Canadians for their support: “Thank you so much. The people of Canada, and of course, to all your team, to the government and parliament. Really. It’s (such) necessary help,” he said.
Trudeau’s trip to Kyiv followed a night of Russian missile and drone attacks on targets outside the capital, including Odesa, Poltava region and Kharkiv.
The Canadian prime minister was accompanied by Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland, a Ukrainian speaker.
Pak out of economic vulnerability phase: Finance Minister Dar
ISLAMABAD, JUN 10
(PTI): Pakistan’s Finance Minister Ishaq Dar on Saturday declared that the country was out of the economic vulnerability phase and the government would make payments to multilateral lenders on time while seeking bilateral debt restructuring.
Addressing the postbudget press conference in Islamabad, a day after unveiling the Rs 14.46 trillion budget for the 2023-24 fiscal year beginning from July 1, Dar said there were no plans to approach multilateral or development institutions to request debt rescheduling.
“As far as Paris Club rescheduling, we have no such plan on our menu. We will not go for rescheduling multilateral debt. We will make the payments on time and when they become due. I don’t think it is a dignified way to go and tell them that we cannot pay,” he said.
Dar said negotiations could be pursued with bilateral lenders for extending the repayment period, which existed as an option and could be explored after
the budget process.
“Backloading the principal and focusing on debt servicing could be considered for bilateral debt rescheduling,” he said.
Dar also clarified that there was no issue with the domestic debt, and the government would not go for its rescheduling.
The minister admitted that the country faced deep and steep economic vulnerability but added that the government successfully overcame it and prevented further economic decline.
Adding that the country would be put back on the road to progress, Dar said the first objective would be to reach the 2017 economic indicators when Pakistan become the 24th economy in the world.
The minister also de-
fended that the declared GDP target of 3.5 per cent growth would be achieved and added that the focus was on agriculture, IT and small and medium-sized industry.
Talking about the International Monetary Fund (IMF), he hoped that the Washington-based donor would complete the process of the ninth and tenth review of the USD 6.5 billion stalled loan package and release funds, but insisted that alternative options were available.
Cash-strapped Pakistan is awaiting a muchneeded USD 1.1 billion tranche of funding from IMF, which was originally due to be disbursed in November last year.
The funds are part of a USD 6.5 billion bailout package the IMF approved in 2019, which analysts say is critical if Pakistan is to avoid defaulting on external debt obligations.
The IMF has insisted that the government should meet tough conditions before releasing USD 1.1 billion.
The Ukrainian leader, at a Kyiv news conference alongside Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, responded to a question about Russian President Vladimir Putin’s comment a day earlier that Ukraine’s counteroffensive had started — and Ukrainian forces were taking “significant losses.”
Zelennsky said that “the counteroffensive, defensive actions are taking place in Ukraine. I will not speak about which stage or phase they are in.”
“I am in touch with our commanders of different directions every day,” he added, citing the names of five of Ukraine’s top military leaders. “Everyone is positive. Pass this on to Putin.”
Former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has abruptly resigned as a lawmaker, claiming he was the “victim of a witch-hunt”, after being told by a parliamentary committee that he will be sanctioned for misleading Parliament over lockdown-breaking parties at Downing Street during his premiership.
Johnson, 58, one of the main architects of Brexit, compared the Privileges Committee probe to a “kangaroo court” as he quit.
Johnson’s decision to resign as a Member of Parliament came on Friday as he received a confidential letter from the MP-led Privileges Committee over the crucial matter.
The former Conservative party leader said he was “bewildered and appalled” after receiving the letter from the committee, which is investigating whether he lied to British lawmakers over lockdown-breaking parties during the pandemic, known as ‘Partygate.’
Taiwan president pledges to strengthen defense capability
Johnson accused the Commons inquiry of attempting to “drive me out”.
In a statement, he said: “They have still not produced a shred of evidence that I knowingly or recklessly misled the Commons.”
Earlier on Friday, he received a copy of the yet-to-be-published report, which he claimed was “riddled with inaccuracies and reeks of prejudice”.
Last year, the Metropolitan Police issued Johnson and then-finance minister Rishi Sunak – who is currently Prime Minister – with a fine for attending a gathering in Downing Street during the Covid-19 lockdown, making Johnson the first sitting UK prime minister to be found guilty of breaking the law.
In evidence given to the Privileges Committee in March, Johnson admitted misleading Parliament but denied doing it on purpose. He said social distancing had not been “perfect” at gatherings in Downing Street during lockdowns. But he said they were “essential” work events, which he claimed were allowed.
He insisted the guidelines - as he understood them - were followed at all times.
Announcing that he would step down, Johnson issued a lengthy and explosive statement in which the former premier said he was a victim of “a witch hunt” that was taking revenge “for Brexit and ultimately to reverse the 2016 referendum result.”
Johnson also criticised Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s government, saying that when he left office last year “the government was only a handful of points behind in the polls” but “that gap has now massively widened.”
French stabbing suspect charged with attempted murder
PARIS, JUN 10 (AP): French judges on Saturday handed preliminary charges of attempted murder to a man suspected of stabbing four young children and two adults in a French Alps park, an attack that reverberated across France and beyond. The suspect is a 31-year-old Syrian refugee with permanent residency in Sweden. His name was not released. The lead prosecutor, Line Bonnet-Mathis, told a news conference Saturday that the man was presented to investigating judges in the lakeside town of Annecy on Saturday and given charges of attempted murder and armed resistance. He is in custody pending further investigation. The prosecutor said the victims are no longer in lifethreatening condition after Thursday’s attack in and around a playground. The children, between 22 months and 3 years old, remain hospitalised.
KAOHSIUNG, JUN 10
(AP): Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen on Saturday said the self-ruled island would work to improve its rescue and defense capabilities with new technologies, adding that strengthening Taiwan is key to maintaining peace.
Tsai also pledged that her government would promote policies to safeguard maritime and border security after inspecting an antiterror drill in Kaohsiung city in southwestern Taiwan.
“The safer Taiwan is, the safer the world is,” she said.

4 children survive plane crash, 40 days in Amazon jungle
BOGOTA, JUN 10 (AP):
Four Indigenous children survived an Amazon plane crash that killed three adults and then wandered on their own in the jungle for 40 days before being found alive by Colombian soldiers.
The announcement of their rescue on Friday brought a happy ending to a saga that had captivated many Colombians, a watch with highs and lows as searchers frantically combed through the rainforest hunting for the youngsters.
President Gustavo Petro celebrated the news upon returning from Cuba, where he signed a cease-fire with representatives of the National Liberation Army rebel group. He said he hoped to talk with them Saturday, and officials said late Friday that the youngsters were being brought to Bogota to be checked at a hospital.
An air force video showed a helicopter using lines to pull the youngsters up because it couldn’t land in the dense rainforest where they were found. The craft flew off in the fading light, the air force said it was going to San Jose del Guaviare, a small town on the edge of the jungle.
No details were released on how the four siblings aged 13, 9, 4 and 11 months managed to survive on their own for so long,
though they belong to an Indigenous group that lives in the remote region. Petro called them an “example of survival” and predicted their saga “will remain in history.”
The military tweeted pictures showing a group of soldiers and volunteers posing with the children, who were wrapped in thermal blankets. One of the soldiers held a bottle to the smallest child’s lips.
The crash happened in the early hours of May 1, when the Cessna singleengine propeller plane with six passengers and a pilot declared an emergency due to an engine failure.
The small aircraft fell off radar a short time later and a frantic search for survivors began. Two weeks after the crash, on May 16, a search team found the
plane in a thick patch of the rainforest and recovered the bodies of the three adults on board, but the small children were nowhere to be found.
Sensing that they could be alive, Colombia’s army stepped up the hunt and flew 150 soldiers with dogs into the area. Dozens of volunteers from Indigenous tribes also helped search.
During the search, in an area where visibility is greatly limited by mist and thick folliage, soldiers on helicopters dropped boxes of food into the jungle, hoping that it would help sustain the children. Planes flying over the jungle fired flares to help search crews on the ground at night, and rescuers used speakers that blasted a message recorded by the siblings’ grandmother, telling them to stay in one place.
Rumors also emerged
about the childrens’
wheareabouts and on May 18 the president tweeted that the children had been found. He then deleted the message, claiming he had been misinformed by a government agency.
The group of four children were travelling with their mother from the Amazonian village of Araracuara to San Jose del Guaviare when the plane crashed.
They are members of the Huitoto people, and officials said the oldest children in the group had some knowledge of how to survive in the rainforest.
On Friday, after confirming the children had been rescued, the president said that for a while he had believed the children were rescued by one of the nomadic tribes that still roam the remote swath of the jungle where the plane fell and have little contact with authorities. But Petro added that the children were first found by one of the rescue dogs that soldiers took into the jungle.
Officials did not say how far the children were from the crash site when they were found. But the teams had been searching within a 4.5-kilometer (nearly 3-mile) radius from the site where the small plane nosedived into the forest floor.
as the democratic island faces increasing military threats from China, which sees Taiwan as a breakaway province to be retaken by force if necessary.
During Saturday’s drills, Taiwanese security officers demonstrated how they would defend against terrorist acts at sea. Some climbed from small boats onto a vessel controlled by “terrorists” and brought them under control. Others rappelled down from a flying helicopter. The simulation ended with a dramatic scene in which some officers hung in the air as they were sent back to the helicopter.
UN peacekeeper killed in northern Mali attack
UNITED NATIONS, JUN 10 (AP): Attackers killed one UN peacekeeper and seriously injured eight others on Friday in Mali’s northern Timbuktu region, an area where extremists continue to operate, the United Nations said.
The peacekeepers, all from Burkina Faso, were part of a security patrol that was targeted first by an improvised explosive device and then by direct small arms fire seven kilometers (four miles) from their base in the town of Ber, UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric said.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres called on Mali’s transitional authorities to identify the perpetrators of the attack and bring them to justice swiftly, noting that “attacks targeting UN peacekeepers may constitute war crimes under international law,” Dujarric said. The Security Council also called for a swift investigation and accountability, and underlined that attacking peacekeepers may not only be a war crime but that involvement in planning, directing, sponsoring or conducting such an attack can lead to sanctions.

Athletics: Kipyegon sets World Record in 5000m
PARIS, JUNE 10 (IANS):
On a historic night, Faith Kipyegon of Kenya and Lamecha Girma of Ethiopia set world records in the 5000m and 3000m steeplechase respectively at the Meeting de Paris, providing the standout moments at a highly memorable Wanda Diamond League meeting in the French capital.
A week after breaking the 1500m world record in Florence, Kipyegon etched her name into the record books for 5000m, winning in 14:05.20, here on Friday night. Participating in her third-ever race at the distance, and her first 5000m outing in eight years, Kipy-
egon went quietly about her job as she quelled a strong challenge from world
record-holder Letesenbet Gidey. But the 29-year-old Kenyan, the world and

Olympic champion showed no fear as she navigated her way through the race, passing 3000m in 8:32.1 tucked behind world record-holder Letesenbet Gidey.
Kipyegon took the lead with about 600 metres to go, but Gidey kept close contact. Kipyegon - now speeding up with each and every stride - hit the bell in 13:04.1, needing a final lap of about 62 seconds to break Gidey’s record. She did exactly that, covering the last 400m in
61.1 seconds to cross the line in 14:05.20 - a 1.42-second improvement on Gidey’s mark.
Gidey finished second in 14:07.94, the third-fastest time in history, the World Athletics informed in a report on Saturday. Girma, who started his year with a world indoor record over 3000m, had requested an ambitious pace for the men’s 3000m steeplechase -- one that would result in a finishing time of about 7:52.
