Wokha: JAC calls for indefinite NH-2 bandh from June 20

DIMAPUR, JUN 14 (NPN): Joint Action Committee (JAC) under the aegis of the Wokha Village Youth Organisation (WVYO) has called for an indefinite bandh along NH-2 passing through Wokha from 6 a.m. of June 20 in support of its various demands. This followed expiry of a 20-day ultimatum served by the JAC to deputy commissioner (DC) Wokha on May 23 to remove encroachments from the right of way (ROW).

However, district administration, police, paramilitary forces, medical services, including ambulance and private vehicles carrying patients or dead people, fire

and emergency services, postal services and the press have been exempted from the purview of the indefinite bandh.

Informing this in a statement, WVYO president Chibenthung P Kikon and WVYO general secretary Echungthung Murry, also JAC convener and member secretary respectively, said that they had observed many discrepancies and shoddy execution of work in the ongoing two-lane construction of NH-2 from KM 72.40 to KM 83 in Wokha district. In this regard, WVYO said it initiated the formation of JAC to act as the voice of the people and approach

the authorities so that citizens get their due share of road development as per the specifications of the DPR.

They said the JAC had approached the DC on May 15 this year, requesting his urgent attention and action on the matter.

Following this, they mentioned that the DC had issued a circular on May 18, inviting all stakeholders for a joint inspection on the issues related to the ongoing construction works on May 20. The joint inspection was carried out successfully with participation of stakeholders and discrepancies were identified at 106 locations.

As a follow-up to this

development, the JAC submitted an ultimatum on the DC to “take swift action to remove these encroachments within the Right of Way (ROW) within the next 20 days from the date of this ultimatum”. In the ultimatum, the committee had listed out all discrepancies identified during the joint inspection-- district administration, PWD (NH) officials, TTC Infra Company, line departments and JAC-- including the apparent negligence exhibited by the district administration and PWD (NH) officials in clearing occupied spaces along the ROW.

Earlier, the 21st Law Commission, whose term ended in August 2018, had examined the issue and solicited the views of all stakeholders on two occasions.

Subsequently, a consultation paper on “Reforms of Family Law” was issued in 2018.

“Since more than three years have lapsed from the date of issuance of the said consultation paper, bearing in mind the relevance and importance of the subject and also the various court orders on the subject, the 22nd Law Commission of India considered it expedient to deliberate afresh over

“Accordingly, the 22nd Law Commission of India decided again to solicit views and ideas of the public at large and recognised religious organisations about the Uniform Civil Code,” the statement said.

Those who are interested and willing can present their views within a period of 30 days from the date of notice to the Law Commission.

If need be, Commission may call upon any individual or organisation for a personal hearing or discussion, it said.

It said the Commission dealt with laws that are discriminatory rather than providing a uniform civil code “which is neither necessary nor desirable at this stage”.

The consultation paper said most countries are now moving towards recognition of difference, and the mere existence of difference does not imply discrimination but is indicative of a robust democracy.

In short, a uniform civil code means having a common law for all citizens of the country that is not based on religion.

Imna Along during his visit

to the village on Wednesday. Addressing a programme held in his honour at Terhotsiese, Khonoma Community Hall, Along said the Tourism ministry saw prospects in Khonoma village and hence selected it as one of the 50 tourist destinations in the Tourism Challenge Mode project.

It may be mentioned that Union Minister for Finance and Corporate Affairs Nirmala Sitharaman had announced while presenting the Union Budget 2023-24 on February 1 this year that at least 50 destinations would be selected and developed as a complete package of tourism.

DIMAPUR, JUN 14 (NPN): A state level conference on ‘Foundational Literacy and Numeracy (FLN), National Education Policy of India (NEP) and G20’ was organised by Central Board of Secondary Education in collaboration with Livingstone Foundation International (LFI) Dimapur on Wednesday where around 20 schools took part. The conference is part of India’s G20 presidency, where the Education Working Group (EdWG) has laid emphasis on foundation literacy and numeracy

among school students, as mandated by the Ministry of Education.

Speaking at the inaugural programme as chief guest, Vice Chancellor of ICFAI University Nagaland, Prof Dr. Saundarjya Borbora stressed on the importance of building a strong foundation to impart

Underscoring the importance of building a strong foundation of literacy and numeracy to impart quality education, he said literacy and numeracy are the foundations of any kind of education, and that one has to be equipped on literacy and numeracy.

“Literacy and numeracy are very important. These two are always the ways of life. There are required in day-to-day activities of life,” said Dr. Borbora.

Expressing concern over the “mathematics phobia” particularly among

students in the North East, he said teachers have a significant role to play in imparting strong mathematics foundation from the school level so as to equip students with a sound base for the “top level”. “Very less students choose Science stream because of the fear of mathematics. Therefore, we need to build a strong foundation from the school level so it becomes easier for students at the top level,” said Dr. Borbora. On NEP 2020, he said the policy would provide an opportunity for holistic learning and development of students.

Yung Aung-led NSCN (K) reacts to NSO, ENSA Foothill road: NZPO backs NFHRCC appeal

DIMAPUR, JUN 14

(NPN): Yung Aung-led

NSCN (K) has reacted to the statement of Naga Students’ Organisation (NSO) and Eastern Naga Students’ Association (ENSA) and urged the two student bodies to “stop putting NSCN/GPRN on equal footing” with the “expelled member” who did not have any political future “rather than amassing wealth under the payroll of the Indian intelligence.”

The group through its MIP said “such intemperate threat and criticism” coming from the “intellectual community” even after knowing the whole truth was “a huge insult to the NSCN/GPRN

and the ongoing Naga struggle.” MIP stated that it would be “a futile attempt” on the part of NSO and ENSA to expect NSCN/GPRN to “yield to the threats and whims of Langnyei and his gang.” It said that Naga struggle was too sacred and too precious to be a bargaining tool to be exchange with corrupt nationalists. It asked NSO and ENSA to introspect deeply to make a correct decision and “not be carried away by their emotional thinking and feelings.” Stating that it understands their discontentment, MIP said the group appreciated their tireless effort to bring peace between

the two sides. MIP said this was why they accepted their appeal for reconciliation and its president Yung Aung had gone ahead and signed the “Public Declaration paper” on May 20, 2023.

However, MIP said when people at the other end refused to reciprocate with the same tone, NSCN/ GPRN cannot be blamed for it. “We must not fear to stand by the truth. The day we failed to distinguish between right from wrong our hard work will fade away into nothingness,” MIP stated. Accusing those members at GHQ of violating every discipline of the revolutionary ethics, the

group claimed that for years GHQ and its surrounding areas have become “a breeding ground for all types of anti-people elements which only strengthen our adversaries.” It stated that if it failed to act collectively the future consequences would be “more severe than we can ever imagine.”

NSCN (K) led by president Yung Aung affirmed that it was always ready to reconciliate but not at the cost of Naga Independent movement. MIP, therefore, urged NSO and ENSA “not to jump to conclusion before digesting the truth and make hasty decision or the result can be counter-production.”

DIMAPUR, JUN 14

(NPN): Nagaland Zeliang People Organisation (NZPO) has extended support to the Nagaland Foothill Road Coordination Committee (NFHRCC)’s appeal to the state government to put into action the Nagaland Assembly Resolution adopted on September 22, 2022 by taking up the foothills project under NEC during the Financial Year 2023-2024.

In a press release, NZPO president Kevipele Iheilung stated that the “historical peoples’ road” from Tizit to Khelma was a longcherished dream of every Naga. NZPO also stated that foothills road was one

of the most urgently needed developments connecting every district of the state without passing through other state.

NZPO has, therefore, appealed to the state government to implement the assembly resolution during the current financial year. Kohima-Pedi-Peren road: NZPO has appealed to the Project Sewak, Dimapur to strengthen the whole length of Kohima-PediPeren road with Dense Bitumen Macadam (DBM) and Bituminous Concrete (BC).

In a letter addressed to the chief engineer project Sewak Dimapur, NZPO president Kevipele Iheilung stated that the particular

road was the only lifeline for many villages, but users especially Zeliang villagers have been suffering for many years due to the pathetic road condition.

NZPO noted that the road stretch between 18-40km and 75-91.38km was to be surfaced with 30mm thickness BC, which it expressed apprehension could hardly stand for a few months only. With the increase in heavy vehicular movement, NZPO said resurfacing with 30mm BC cannot withstand. It said that once resurfacing was done another resurfacing cannot be expected before 5-6 years.

BSNL employees stage dharna

Correspondent

KOHIMA, JUN 14

(NPN): Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) employees under the banner of the Joint Forum of Nonexecutive Unions & Associations of BSNL staged a protest at the BSNL office premises here on Wednesday. They also marched to Raj Bhavan and submitting

a memorandum addressed to governor La Ganesan.

In the memorandum, the employees claimed that non-settlement of wage revision of around 12,000 non-executives (Group C and D) employees out of 30,000 had resulted in stoppage of annual increment, due to stagnation.

in launch of 4G by BSNL.

The unions claimed that due to non-availability of high speed data service with BSNL, 77 lakh customers had left the company in 2022 alone. Even thereafter, lakhs of customers were leaving BSNL due to the heavy delay in BSNL’s launching of 4G and 5G services.

Q: Was the recent inundation in Dimapur due to lack of proper drainage system?

The memorandum stated that the Department of Telecommunications (DOT), the nodal department for BSNL, had issued a letter to the chairman & managing director (CMD) of BSNL on April 27, 2018 directing negotiation and signing of Wage Revision Agreement with the recognised unions of the non-executives and send the same for approval.

However, even after five years, the BSNL management had not signed the agreement with the unions, which was leading to the stagnation, the memorandum said.

The protesters demanded that the wage revision should be settled without further delay.

They also pointed out that the inordinate delay in the launching of BSNL’s 4G and 5G services had resulted in huge losses since private operators had already launched their 5G service. This delay, they alleged, was due to the roadblocks created by the government

This exodus of BSNL customers, the memorandum mentioned, was causing irreparable damage to the company.

The protesters demanded that all-out efforts should be made for immediate launching of BSNL’s 4G and 5G services.

They further demanded a new promotion policy for the non-executives, alleging that they were being discriminated in the matter of promotions. The unions insisted that the

policy should be reviewed and implemented.

The memorandum requested the governor to intervene and settle the burning issues of the employees and the company.

The employees had, through separate letters addressed to BSNL CMD PK Purwar and telecom secretary, DOT, K Rajaraman, notified them earlier about their proposed nationwide protest.

Earlier, on June 1, they had organised a human chain programme in all district headquarters, which was followed by Wednesday’s march to Raj Bhavans and submission of memorandums in all circle headquarters.

In the next phase scheduled on July 7, the employees plan to march to Delhi through “Delhi Chalo” programme.

CSOs draw United Nations intervention on Mnp crisis

IMPHAL, JUN 14: Fifteen

CSOs belonging to different communities have submitted a joint memorandum to the United Nations General Assembly, New York on the prevailing situation of human rights violations and humanitarian issues in Manipur. The 15 CSOs also submitted memoranda to various allied offices and agencies of the UN calling for urgent attention on the issue of hunger, poverty, militarization, partisan role of the central security forces of India, and unabated violation of Tripartite Suspension of Operation ground rules by the Kuki militants.

The organizations are All Manipur United Clubs’ Organisation (AMUCO), Committee on Human Rights (COHR), National Research Centre (NRC), Porei Leimarol Meirapaibi Apunba Lup Manipur (PLMPAM), Indigenous People’s Forum (IPF), Irabot Foundation Manipur (IFM), All Manipur Ethnical Socio Cultural Organization (AMESCO), All Manipur Meitei Pangal Clubs Organization (AMMPCO), Manipur International Youth Centre (MIYC), Pangal Students’ Organization (PSO), All Manipur Women’s Voluntary Association (AMAWOVA), Manipur Students’ Federation (MSF), Centre for Research and Advocacy Manipur (CRAM), Youths Foundation for Fitness and Service Manipur (YOFFS) and the All Manipur Manpower Upliftment Centre (AMMUC). The memoranda were submitted to the Secretary General, United Nations, International Committee of the Red Cross, Geneva, Under Secretary-General, Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), UN Civil Society Section, Amnesty International and ICRC and India Chapter (8) UNODC, Asia. The memoranda underlined the breach of inter community ties and peace in Manipur and in the entire

Northeastern region due to the evident involvement of foreign Chin-Kuki-Mizo (Myanmarese) mercenaries in inciting inter-ethnic violence in Manipur. ‘An unbiased international attention and intervention is the need of the hour in accordance with the established International Humanitarian Laws’, claims the Memorandum.

The Memoranda seeks to draw the attention of the United Nations to the issues of human rights violations and the blockade of life line like highways by Kuki militant groups under the Suspension of Operation.

The involvement of Committee on Tribal Unity (COTU), Kuki Students’ Organization (KSO) and Indigenous Tribal Leaders’ Forum (ITLF) in blocking the National Highways, disallowing free movement of people and transportation of essential commodities has been termed as ‘inhuman’ and ‘genocidal attitude’ for causing enormous price rise, poverty, and hunger in the state of Manipur.

The issue of drug cartels and its ever-expanding financing network in the social and political life of the Northeast region and India Myanmar borderland has been placed before the UN.

Explaining the origin of the present ethnic tension, the petition argues that ‘the mobilization for Greater

Chin-Kuki Homeland also known as Zalen’gam project has continuously impaired inter-ethnic relations in the region.’ The submission also highlighted how the ethnic Zo politics worked in collusion with the narco-finance capital terror network driven by clan-based ethnic militant groups thereby making easy inroads into electoral politics and institutions of power.

Delving on the issue, ‘cross-border insidious economic activities like human trafficking, poppy cultivation, deforestation, illegal immigration, ecological issues, and space politics complicates’ the state, argues the petition The petition apprises the UN to understand the historically distinct shared democratic and plural body polity of Manipur. The democratic participation of Nagas, Meiteis, Kukis and Pangals (Manipur Muslims) in the independent Constitutional and modern state making process in Manipur has been highlighted to acquaint the UN with the fraternal political history of Manipur.

The Memorandum stresses on the inter-connected topography of Manipur as it apprises the international community to know that 3-4% of Manipur’s valley is home to nearly 60% state’s population which warrants for envisioning of a democratic and just land laws.

GUWAHATI, JUNE 14

(IANS): Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday said that the Guwahati railway station will be transformed into a next-generation station which will have all the stateof-the-art facilities.

Sarma, while speaking at a program in Guwahati, said that Guwahati Railway Station witnesses an annual footfall of one crore passengers with a growth rate of 15-20 percent. This MoU will also lead to creating passengers’ convenience along with developing a world-class railway station.

The Chief Minister said that Guwahati railway connects several places across the state and northeast region, upgradation of it into a state of art station is a long-felt need.

He said that in the last nine years in the state, 212 km of meter gauge have been converted to broad gauge in Assam. More than 200 km of rail tracks have been made double-tracked.

“Moreover, the railway is also building a dedicated freight station at Agyathuri and another railway bridge over the Brahmaputra parallel to the existing Saraighat bridge,” Sarma said.

SHILLONG, JUN 14: The joint regional committee meeting between Meghalaya and Assam began on Wednesday here to resolve the six remaining areas of differences between the two states. Deputy Chief Minister and Chairman of West Jaintia Hills district regional committee, Sniawbhalang Dhar led the Meghalaya delegation, while Assam Water Resources Minister Pijush Hazarika headed the Assam side as the Chairman of the West Karbi Anglong district regional committee.

The regional committees examined the areas of difference in Block I, PsiarKhanduli along Meghalaya’s West Jaintia Hills district and Assam’s West Karbi Anglong district.

Dhar while speaking to reporters after the joint regional committee meet Chief Minister level talks, said that they will jointly visit the areas of differences in West Jaintia Hills district and West Karbi Anglong district and listen to the people to resolve it “amicably through understanding and mutual respect”. Hazarika said: “We have a long pending border dispute, but I am

sure we will be able to settle it amicably.” Since the Block I and Psiar-Khanduli are areas with a history of disputes between the residents of Meghalaya and Assam, both the Chief Ministers of the states would also be making a joint visit in these areas in the days to come.

Stating that no decision on an “agreed formula” has been taken, Dhar rejected taking a decision to resolve differences in these areas through a “give and take formula.” “Our first priority of the two committees is to visit these areas and get to know the mind of the people residing there and everything will be resolved amicably,” Dhar said.

The Railway Bazar Permanent Residential Union also further convey our appreciation to Executive Engineer PWD (R&B) and his officiating colleagues for supervising the construction of road black topping in Railway Bazar Colony with utmost concern and dedication.

resolving the border issue,” he said. Dhar said that the regional committees have set a deadline to submit reports to their respective governments by August this year. “Work has therefore begun in earnest to achieve that goal,” he stated. On the recent clash in some of these areas between the local residents of both states, Hazarika said, those indulging in disturbances don’t belong to Assam. “Miscreants creating disturbance don’t be long to our state. We are very friendly… People of Assam love the people of Megha-

laya and I do believe that people from Meghalaya also love the people of Assam,” Hazarika said. Meanwhile, in the second phase six areas of differences would be taken up for resolution.

The second phase includes complex areas such as Block I, Psiar-Khanduli in West Jaintia Hills district. Block II, Borduar, Nongwah-Mawtamur and Deshdoomreah in Ri-Bhoi district and Langpih in West Khasi Hills district.

Three committees have been constituted, one each for Ri-Bhoi, West Khasi Hills and West Jaintia Hills districts.

On May 24, Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma and his Assam counterpart Himanta Biswa Sarma held a meeting and decided to make a joint visit to the areas of difference in West Jaintia Hills and Karbi Anglong as a confidence building measure so that an early boundary resolution could be initiated.

PMLA ; coalition slams BJP

were not followed properly in the matter.

Leader of Opposition and AIADMK chief K Palaniswami sought Balaji’s resignation on moral grounds.

The BJP state unit sought to dismiss DMK’s charge that it was resorting to vindictive action, saying the ED move was part of an ongoing investigation into the cash for jobs scam allegedly involving Balaji.

CHENNAI, JUN 14 (PTI):

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Wednesday arrested Tamil Nadu Electricity, Prohibition and Excise Minister V Senthil Balaji under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), official sources said, making him the first member in the M K Stalinled Cabinet to face such an action from a central probe agency.

Balaji was arrested after a long session of questioning, they said, even as the 47-year-old minister was admitted to a city government hospital after he complained of uneasiness. He underwent a coronary angiogram and was advised bypass surgery at the “earliest”.

A local court later sent him to judicial custody till June 28.

Reserve all Grade IV posts for land owners: KVC

DIMAPUR, JUN 14 (NPN): Kejanglwa Village Council (KVC) under Peren district has urged the State government to reserve all Grade IV posts at all department offices falling under the village’s jurisdiction for land owners of the village.

NEW DELHI, JUN 14

Seperately, a habeus corpus petition was filed in the Madras High Court, seeking his being produced before the court.

Chief Minister Stalin, who had slammed the ED raids against Balaji on Tuesday as “intimidation politics”, met his cabinet colleague at the Tamil Nadu Government Multi Super Speciality Hospital, Omandurar Estate.

The Chief Minister stepped up his attack on the BJP over the ED arresting his cabinet colleague, as he asserted the minister will face the case legally, and so will the party.

He charged the ED officials of “enacting a drama” in the name of enquiry and accused them of “physically and mentally troubling” Balaji. The DMK claimed arrest-related procedures

The agency had launched multi-city searches in the state on Tuesday on the premises linked to the DMK’s Karur strongman as part of the probe into money laundering.

The action came months after the Supreme Court allowed a police and ED probe into an alleged cash for jobs scam against him.

In the early hours of Wednesday, Balaji was hospitalised after complaining of uneasiness, DMK leaders said.

State Minister P K Sekar Babu claimed there were “symptoms” that Balaji was “tortured”. TV visuals showed Balaji feeling uneasy and crying while being brought to hospital.

(PTI): The border guarding forces of India and Bangladesh have taken a “momentous” decision to initiate joint civil works on five development projects along the 4,096 kms of shared boundary which will help the local population on both sides, a senior officer said Wednesday.

At the end of their four-day biannual border talks conference that began on June 11 in Delhi, the Border Security Force (BSF) and the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) also said they are working independently and jointly to “reduce” the instances of killing of Bangladeshi nationals in the boundary area. The issue of these killings, which the BSF has linked to miscreants and smugglers either attacking

its personnel or indulge in other cross-border crimes, has been a major irritant between the two neighbours.

The 53rd edition of the conference was led by the chiefs or directors general (DsG) of the BSF and the BGB and ended with the signing of a ‘joint record of discussions’ at a BSF camp located in Chhawla area of the national capital.

“During this conference, in a momentous decision, that will have a profound positive impact on the lives of the population along the India-Bangladesh border, a total of five developmental projects were agreed upon, enhancing the joint efforts towards progress and prosperity in the region.” “This decision is a significant step towards improving the overall quality of life and will serve to foster stronger bilateral trade and relations between the two countries,” the BSF said in a statement.

These five development projects are related to the construction of a bailey bridge, road repair and the strengthening of the retaining walls along the border that runs on India’s eastern flank in five states of Assam, West Bengal, Mizoram, Meghalaya and Tripura.

KVC chairman Namrachang Hegui, secretary Hiareu Ndang and head GB Hubagwang Hegui in a press release said the state government had signed an MoU for establishment of Peren headquarter model township with land owners of the village on July 3, 2006. Accordingly, land measuring 510.62 acres was acquired from Kejanglwa by the government, which agreed to pay compensation in second instalment on or

before March 31, 2010 to the land owners. The sale deed agreement signed on October 30, 2009 was executed, but they alleged that the compensation for the acquired land had not been paid to the owners. However, they pointed out that the village continued to honour and respect the agreement and allowed the offices to function smoothly till date, though their conscience pricked considering the illegal occupation of land by the government.

They said they had submitted representations to Peren deputy commissioner (DC) regarding the matter on May 21, 2015, June 4, 2016 and 14 June 2022, but lamented that their griev -

ances had not been heard.

Thereafter, KVC in a general meeting on January 20 this year took a unanimous decision on the matter, which was reaffirmed on May 26 on the occasion of the Village Foundation Day that since the land owners had not been compensated, all Grade IV posts at all department offices under the village’s jurisdiction should be reserved for the land owners. Cautioning that the village would resort to any democratic form of agitation, or even to the extent of shutting offices of erring de partments ignoring the sentiments of legal owners of the land, they appealed to the government to initiate appropriate steps to redress their genuine grievance.

Price flies sky high

Airfares on certain domestic routes have skyrocketed in recent days, largely driven by summer travel demand, airline capacity constraints and suspension of Go First’s operations. On routes involving popular summer holiday destinations, airfares have jumped up by as much as 50-80 percent over last month. This summer travel season has seen an unusually high spike in ticket prices. For instance, the round trip delhi-Goa which used to be priced at Rs.15,000 in May shot up to Rs.22,000 by June. Also, the price of a ticket for a round trip from delhi-Mumbai that used to be priced at Rs.14,000 in May shot up to Rs.20,000 by June. The entire air fare has gone crazy especially the popular route between delhi-Leh for which a round trip coast was touching around Rs.50,000 at peak season. Amid the surge in domestic airfares, Union Civil Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia asked airlines to “self-monitor” the prices on certain routes, particularly the ones that have been most affected by suspension of cash-strapped airline Go First from May 3.According to IATA, the price of jet fuel has increased nearly 150% in the last year. Airlines are also facing the reality of not having enough pilots and flight attendants to run their flights, as well as higher labor costs. All of these forces have combined to create rising ticket prices. The hike in jet turbine fuel that was hiked to nearly 150% is under the control of the government. According to various reports, the turbine fuel ought not to have sky rocketed since India buys oil from Russia at cheap rates. The market share of crude oil imports from Russia, which stood at less than 1% before the start of the Russia-Ukraine conflict in February 2022, rose to 1.64 million barrels per day in March, taking Russia’s share to nearly 34%. Crude oil imports from OpEC countries declined to 59.5% of total imports during April–March 2022–23 as compared to 71.6% during April–March 2021–22, according to the date released by the petroleum planning and Analysis Cell. The government has not passed on the windfall from the import of crude oil from Russia as prices of fuel continued to rise. The other factor is the use of advanced computer and pricing algorithms by airlines to determine prices and run sales based on the time of the year, passenger demand, weather, major events/festivals, time of day, competitor prices, fuel prices, etc. When travel demand is low, prices are low and when demand is high, prices are high to capitalise on the interest. To do this, airlines set up a pricing schedule for their flights, putting the seats into price ‘buckets,’ and as one ‘bucket’ fills up, they open the next, more expensive one up for purchase. The travel industry has blackout days like Holi, diwali, Christmas, New Year, school holiday season etc. Travellers need to avoid travel during these days as fares would be higher. Travel agencies have disclosed that for domestic trips, prices have been lower 14-44 days before departure, and the lowest average prices are usually 21 days out.

Get Moving! (1)

Abide in Me… —John 15:4

In the matter of determination. The Spirit of Jesus is put into me by way of the atonement by the Cross of Christ. I then have to build my thinking patiently to bring it into perfect harmony with my Lord. God will not make me think like Jesus— I have to do it myself. I have to bring “every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ” (2 Corinthians 10:5). “Abide in Me”— in intellectual matters, in money matters, in every one of the matters that make human life what it is. Our lives are not made up of only one neatly confined area.

Am I preventing God from doing things in my circumstances by saying that it will only serve to hinder my fellowship with Him? How irrelevant and disrespectful that is! It does not matter what my circumstances are. I can be as much assured of abiding in Jesus in any one of them as I am in any prayer meeting. It is unnecessary to change and arrange my circumstances myself. Our Lord’s inner abiding was pure and unblemished. He was at home with God wherever His body was. He never chose His own circumstances, but was meek, submitting to His Father’s plans and directions for Him. Just think of how amazingly relaxed our Lord’s life was! But we tend to keep God at a fever pitch in our lives. We have none of the serenity of the life which is “hidden with Christ in God” (Colossians 3:3).

Think of the things that take you out of the position of abiding in Christ. You say, “Yes, Lord, just a minute— I still have this to do. Yes, I will abide as soon as this is finished, or as soon as this week is over. It will be all right, Lord. I will abide then.” Get moving— begin to abide now. In the initial stages it will be a continual effort to abide, but as you continue, it will become so much a part of your life that you will abide in Him without any conscious effort. Make the determination to abide in Jesus wherever you are now or wherever you may be placed in the future.

Yung Aung-led NSCN (K) affirms stance on present crisis

It is extremely unfortu -

nate and shameful for the protracted Naga freedom struggle as treason has once again raised its ugly head in the form some expelled NSCN members. Lately there have been a lot of misapprehension and false conception regarding current problem within the NSCN/GPRN.

To better understand the truth, one must view the issue from the right angle and right prospective.

The NSCN/GPRN has already issued a press statement on 12/4/2023 regarding its decision to expel the three party members for antiparty activities. The Naga army under its Commanderin-Chief, Gen. Th.Kumchok and Deputy Commander-inChief, Lt.Gen.Thumching has also issued clarification the same day, denouncing Maj.Gen.Langnyei’s illegal actions and defamatory statement. Hence the false notion of CHQ and GHQ attacking each other is totally out of question. The Naga army is fully intact under the Commander-in-Chief

and Deputy Commanderin-Chief.

Overpowering and bribing few weak and corrupt Officers to his side does not validate Langnyei’s wild claim of having full military support. Langnyei’s political gamble and inane chattering at the behest of his Indian paymaster will not change the truth, rather the truth will unfold and he cannot escape the scrutiny of the people. His true colour will be expose sooner or later. The revered Naga struggle cannot be held hostage and dictated at the whims of Langnyei and his group of renegades.

In spite of the grave mistakes committed by these expelled members, the NSCN/GPRN and the Naga army maintain extreme self-restraint due to the growing concern of the local public and presence of innocent Naga army cadres in GHQ.

The NSCN/GPRN deeply appreciates and understands the People’s appeal for peace and tranquillity in the eastern Nagaland.

It was towards that objective, the NSCN/GPRN held consecutive meetings with the Naga cultural and literature Committee, Naga Baptist Convention, Khiamniungan Public Organization, Leinong Mission, Konyak Union Myanmar, Naga Students’ Organization, Eastern Naga Students’ Association, Tangshang Churches, Tangshang Tribes Councils etc.

Hence we are amazed to which Naga CSOs Langnyei is referring to when he accuse the President, Mr.Yung Aung of turning a ‘deaf ear’. It was Yung Aung himself who went against his own conscience and Protocol to convince the Party members in accepting the People’s call for peace.

Upon the Party’s approval, he issued a Public Declaration on 20/5/2023 - for Peace and Reconciliationin the interest of the whole Naga people and the Naga National Struggle.

To expedite the reconciliation process, the NSCN/GPRN entrusted the Naga Students’ Organi-

zation (NSO) and the Eastern Naga Students’ Association (ENSA) to lend their good service which they accepted instantaneously. Instead of responding positively, Langnyei and his gang choose to embarked on a provocative remarks and ultimatum which is not only unacceptable to the NSCN/GPRN but also an open defiance to the genuine call of the people. The Peace mission thus failed due to Langnyei’s arrogant and aggressive nature and the NSCN/GPRN must not be the blame for it.

Does Mr.Langnyei ever know that his bragging in the Media only exposes his political immaturity and ignorance? Did he think that creating a bogus story justify his mistakes? Why did Mr.Langnyei make a false statement that the Naga CSOs had drawn the Tigak river as a boundary line between the CHQ and GHQ? No such understanding takes place and Naga CSOs are witness to all his lies. His bold exertion of righteously “walking in

p) As the NSF launched the celebration of its 75 years of existence under the theme ‘Call to Oneness’ for all Nagas to come together, this same Naga Club issued ‘notice to vacate the Naga Club building in toto on or before the 27th of August 2022.

q) This time around, as the NSF was preparing to hold its General Conference, its office was vandalized, documents destroyed, and its office materials such as computers, furniture, gadgets etc. all damaged.

r) On December 13,2022: Daniel Shiu, A Burma Naga brought to public domain, a document entitled ‘The paradox of the Naga Club then and now’ wherein it was written ‘Therefore, going by the Lakhuti resolution of 1955 of the mandated Naga national organization ie, NNC, the Naga club of today should be branded as unlawful and treacherous’. The rest of the unfortunate events that transpired is in public domain including the criminal act of vandalizing the NSF Oking which is a common Naga heritage site and is a treasure trove of documents pertaining to the Naga people.

The NSF would like to clearly state that it has no intention of antagonizing or confronting any group or individual but will function guided by the fundamental principles that are clearly enshrined in its constitution for Unified Lim and Glory of Nagas by all means and will always remain open to the idea of inclusiveness.

A lot of bold statements were made by Mr. Kuilochalie Seyie, the self proclaimed President of the unrecognized Naga Club, during his recent interview with a prominent regional News channel. He claimed that the unrecognized Naga Club is for all the Nagas while also accusing NSF of never having met them in the last 7 (seven) years. Both the claim as well as the accusation are baseless and hold no water whatsoever. The Federation would like to refresh his over-used brain by taking his memories back to the time when NSF was planning to celebrate the ‘100 year of Naga Club’.

the footsteps of our most respected late Baba S.S. Khaplang and his undying principles and values” is quite amusing. All of a sadden how did he become all knowing when all these years he had concealed himself inside his opium den.

It may be noted that due to their heavy addiction to drug and opium, both Mr.Nyeiton and Mr.Langnyei are the first to openly criticize the new transformation policy within NSCN/GPRN.

Their false allegations hold not truth but can be view as a desperate attempt to propagate hates Champaign against President Yung Aung and malign the reputation of the NSCN/ GPRN in order to advance their hidden agenda and that of the enemy, These expelled members have seized control of the Naga Army Headquarters for the last two months and recently they have targeted the public area to utilize the innocent civilians as Human shield, thus putting countless lives at risk. They applied ‘hit

(From previous issue)

It was through the meetings between some members of the Ad-hoc Naga Club and the then officials of NSF on several occasions that the proposal to organize the occasion together was mooted. After due consultations with the stakeholders, the NSF officials met the then Chairman of the Ad-hoc Naga Club Mr. Krurovi Peseyie in the month of March at his residence in Jotsoma where he clearly mentioned that Naga Club will celebrate only for the tribes of Nagaland State. It was due to this stark contrast in the concepts of celebrating the occasion that the Ad-hoc Naga Club and NSF could not organize the occasion.

With the facts placed before the public, how can he claim that the Ad-hoc Naga club is for the entire Nagas without borders and that NSF had never met them? The audacity of Mr. Kuolochalie Seyie to mislead the Naga people through lies is unfortunate.

The main accusation as per their ‘notice to vacate’ was ‘that your esteemed organization has paid Rs. 500/- (five hundred only) in rent for the month of April 1983 on 07.04.1983 after which you have never paid our Naga Club house rent from May 1983 till date’. But how do NSF pay rent to an organization from May 1983 till whichever date to an organization which was formed only in 2017/18?

The NSF reiterates that the Naga club belongs to all the Naga people and that no individual or group can claim ownership of the same. The Naga issue, the Naga political history and the resulting rights of the Naga people cannot be owned nor inherited by some individuals.

The NSF has always been honoring our ancestors who laid the foundation of the Naga nationhood, for which NSF is a proud descendent, however, the present Naga Club which is not recognized by the Naga people was formed suddenly in 2017/18 with ulterior motives to hijack a certain planned celebration of the NSF which was not even in their thoughts then.

The NSF is uncompromisingly of the view that the Present Naga club is unmandated and that the Naga people as a whole should decide the relevance of its existence in the present context and that a proper Naga Club should be re-constituted, based on the foundation of the Memorandum that was submitted to the Simon Commission in 1929.

Henceforth, the Naga Students’ Federation and the All Nagaland college Students’ Union (ANCSU) shall resume its normal functioning at its Oking, Naga Club building.

Nevertheless, with God and the Naga general public as our witness, we leave the matter to the best wisdom of the Nagas and the APO as the messenger of Peace to uphold the legacy of the Naga club and bring the Naga people together in the true spirit of the memorandum submitted to the Simon commission by the Naga Club in 1929.

and run’ tactic to instil fear psychosis and confusion among local public.

On 5/6/2023, they launched a cowardly ambush on the Naga Army near Nyanching village and we lost Cpl.Rushi, a brave young soldier from the unit of 2nd Battalion in the attack.

On 13/6/2023, they came and attack the Naga Army while they were temporarily stationed at Chen Loiyi village. They indiscriminately fired lethod bombs into the public area but the Naga Army did not retaliate as to avoid collateral damage. Luckily, no one was hurt in the attack. Today, the limit of tolerance has reached its zenith. The silent of the NSCN/GPRN must not be interpreted as our weakness. No more restraint will be shown. The NSCN/GP RN stands ready to face the eventuality that may harm the revere peoples’ struggle come how dark and ugly it may be.

MIP NSCN/GPRN

The ‘end game’ of our scheming Southern brother does not end here. They want to ensure that GoI concedes to their demand for PAN NAGA HOHO…for what purpose? Is emotional integration their true purpose? The real reason in their scheme of things is to continue controlling the Nagas of Nagaland even in the postsolution era.

The Tangkhul brothers envisages a Bi-cameral setup… Upper House- Lower House (Rajaya Sabha/ Lok Sabha equivalent) for their so-called ‘Naga Nation’ where the ‘Lower House’ will house the Elected Representatives while the ‘Upper House’ would consist of Members nominated by the PAN NAGA HOHO that they will control in the like manner of their redundant ‘Naga Haha’ of today.

The working dynamics so craftily designed in this set up is that no matter what Bills are proposed by the ‘Lower House’, such Bills cannot become an ACT/ LAW without the approval of the ‘Upper House’ which would consist of puppet members nominated by PAN NAGA HOHO.

This diabolic plan of wanting to control the lives of the Nagas of Nagaland in the post solution era is a firsthand knowledge acquired from one of the Tangkhul king pins in the NSCN (IM) set up.

This is a real plan of our Tangkhul brothers in the NSCN (IM)…and believe me…this is not a joke!!! I dare NSCN (IM) to deny this fact! Is it not clearly apparent to the Nagas of Nagaland as to why NSCN (IM) is extremely reluctant to transparently disclose their “COMPETENCEY CLAUSES” that they have been negotiating with the GoI all this while???? Is the present Naga generation of Nagaland so desperately devoid of courage to perceive and collectively stand up for what we believe to be the right thing to do…rather than succumb to the dictates of one single human being called Muivah who had publically disavowed “Sovereignty” and “Integration” but now demanding “Naga Flag” and “Naga Yezahbo” for the Naga Nation? I have said this before and I am saying it again…NO INDEPENDENT NATION SEEKS PERMISSION FROM ANOTHER INDEPENDENT NATIONS FOR THEIR NATIONAL FLAG AND THEIR CONSTITUTION! The ‘Flag’ and the ‘Constitution’ is a natural independent protocol of an Independent Nation that does not require any permission from any other Nation. Period!

Yet here we are…the so-called “Sovereignty” of the NSCN (IM) requires the permission of the GoI to have a “Naga

Flag” and a “Naga Yezahbo”… for their delusional “Sovereign Naga Nation”…for which the talks has run into a road block… and we the fearful stakeholders have nothing to say.

In all of this…it is getting clearer by the day that both Mr. Rio and Mr. Muivah do not want the final solution to happen. In the case of Mr. Muivah, who probably perceives himself to be the “Father of the Nation”, will find no place in his so-called “Naga Nation” without Integration and therefore the only other place he could go is that small little hole called the “Autonomous Regional Territorial Council” in the hills of Manipur…that is if his own people would accept him after he is ‘gun-less’, and that too without the commensurate unquestioned authority that he commands today.

It seems obvious that he would rather prefer to die in harness with all the pomp and authority that he enjoys at this point in time rather than fade into oblivion in the post solution era.

As for Mr. Rio….he too seems to be head over heels in love with the Chief Minister’s Chair for obvious intent…but would have to part with it if the post solution period begins.

So why hurry huh? Otherwise…with the anti-Constitutional issue of “Sovereignty” out of the equation…if he had a true honest intent of wanting a solution… he has the full Government machinery at his command to build up a real united public opinion and momentum for the GoI to sit up and take notice…a long time ago… rather than conveniently hide behind the “role of a facilitator, facilitating nothing”.

Finally, in the case of our gun toting Southern brothers, perhaps they should seriously consider the possibility that taking the Nagas of Nagaland for granted so persistently for so long with all their demonic secrecy could be counterproductive.

A time could very well come when push comes to a shove, history could repeat itself where ‘quit notice’ could well be served to them once again for their lack of trust and transparency in dealing with our future…giving them the liberty to implement their competency clauses in their own territory in Manipur…but not in Nagaland.

Anyway, fellow Nagas tighten your seat belts…we are in for a loooooong haul because all of us have misplaced our courage to stand up for our rights! We the Nagas have been trying to go forward on a back gear and perhaps we are soon about to reach the station called: “Solution? What Solution?”

new Vande Bharat trains

NEW DELHI, JUN 14

(PTI): Railways will start operating Vande Bharat trains on five more routes from June 26, the first launch after the three-train accident in Odisha on June 2 that claimed 288 lives.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to launch the semi-highspeed trains via video conferencing.

The routes on which the five trains will run are - Mumbai-Goa, Bangalore-Hubli, Patna-Ranchi, Bhopal-Indore and Bhopal-Jabalpur.

The railway ministry had cancelled the launch of the Mumbai-Goa Vande Bharat train after the Odisha tragedy.

This is the first time that five Vande Bharat trains will start operations on the same day.

While such launches in the past have seen a lot of fanfare, it will be a relatively austere event this time in view of the Odisha accident.

Das receives ‘Governor of the Year’ award in London

NEW DELHI, JUN 14

(AGENCIES): Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Governor Shaktikanta Das was awarded the “Governor of the Year” at the Central Banking Awards 2023 in London. Central Banking is a London-based international economic research journal.

According to Business Standard, Das is the second RBI governor to receive the award after Raghuram Rajan, who was given the title in 2015. Das “cemented critical reforms, overseen world-leading payments innovation, and steered India through difficult times with a steady hand and wellcrafted turn of phrase”, the organisers of the award said.

The organisers added that Das’ tenure which began in 2018, “has been marked by a series of grave

The organisers of the Central Banking Awards 2023 spoke about the collapse of Infrastructure Leasing & Financial Services (IL&FS) in September 2018 which led to a liquidity crunch in the Indian banking system. “A handful of

other firms collapsed in the subsequent months, including Punjab and Maharashtra Co-operative Bank, which had lent heavily to an infrastructure finance firm that went bust,” they said. Das was also credited for “appearing as a voice of calm amid the fear” during the Covid-19 pandemic by the organisers. The statement by the organisers also talked about Das’ opposition to crypto assets in India. Das is a retired Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer of the Tamil Nadu cadre, who is currently serving as the 25th governor of the RBI. Wokha: JAC calls for indefinite NH-2 bandh from June 20

(From p-1)

It also pointed out the problems with landowners who, despite having received compensation, continued to erect structures within the ROW, with some even declining to provide space, thereby undermining the effectiveness of the compensation process. However, with the ultimatum having lapsed already, JAC demanded that the authorities concerned must address all the 106 marked discrepancies within the ROW and that the contractor must reconstruct/rectify the pavement alignments, drainages and all substandard retaining walls, breast walls and culverts along the entire stretch following rectification of the ROW by appropriate authorities.

Alleging that the distribution of compensation was strikingly unequal, with some beneficiaries receiving up to Rs 70-80 lakh, they demanded that the responsible authority must immediately examine this alarming discrepancy and initiate proceedings against those involved in misappropriation of compensation funds totalling up to a staggering Rs 18 crore.

They claimed that the committee had followed all official procedures to seek justice, but lamented that the Wokha DC had failed to take any action on the ground. Therefore, they warned that the DC would be held solely responsible and accountable in the event of any authority or individual attempting to undermine, obstruct, or hinder fulfilment of the genuine demands.

(From p-1) She had said that these destinations would be selected through challenge mode, using an integrated and innovative approach, while the focus of development of tourism would be on domestic as well as foreign tourists. She had also proposed to launch an app in which all relevant aspects of the tourist destinations would be made available, in addition to aspects such as physical connectivity, virtual connectivity, tourist guides, high standards of food streets and tourist security, to enhance tourist experience.

To strengthen domestic tourism, sector-specific skilling would be done and entrepreneurship development would be dovetailed to achieve the objectives of the “Dekho Apna Desh” initiative, the budget had proposed. Also, tourist infrastructure and amenities would be facilitated under the Vibrant Villages Programme to encourage tourism in border villages.

In a tweet, Salhoutuono Kruse, thanked Imna Along for identifying the village as one of the 50 tourist destinations of the country.

(From p-1) However, he said that their sense of responsibility and obligations should be the cornerstone of their life. Governor asked them to remember that whatever they do they should always carry the hopes and wishes of not only their family but the society and the state as well.

Describing the New Education Policy 2023 as watershed moment in India’s educational system, governor stated that NEP aims to raise the standard of education in India to a global level.

Governor also said that the principles of NEP was to determine and nurture the child’s potential, increase the child reading and numeracy knowledge and also improving their creativity and logical thinking.

He pointed out that NEP intends to make the Indian educational system more inclusive, flexible and learned-centre.

Governor urged the students that they need to imbibe good ethical values of honesty, integrity, patriotism, empathy and love towards their fellowmen especially the weaker section.

Foothill road: NZPO backs NFHRCC appeal

(From p-1)

NZPO pointed out that 6.7-18km was already restrengthened and now the road on that portion was in very good condition. Besides, it said the road between 40km to 75km was also being surfaced with DBM and BC, adding the workmanship was appreciated.

NZPO has, therefore, requested project Sewak Dimapur to surface the whole length of Kohima-Pedi-Peren road with DBM and BC. NZPO stated that if resurfacing was to be done for namesake i.e. re-surface with 30mm BC thickness, the department should not do resurfacing job.

He also encouraged them that these values will hold them in good stead as they are going to hold important positions in society and the government one day.

Atleast 6 killed as Russia strikes Ukraine

KYIV, JUN 14 (AP): Russian forces fired cruise missiles at the southern Ukrainian city of Odesa and shelled the eastern Donetsk region early on Wednesday, killing at least six people and damaging dozens of homes, regional Ukrainian officials said.

Russian forces have stepped up aerial strikes in their nearly 16-month war, a Ukrainian military spokesman said.

The country’s armed forces, meanwhile, have reported limited gains in the early stages of a counteroffensive to take back the nearly one-fifth of Ukraine’s territory that is under Russian control.

The grinding Ukrainian advance is pressing slowly ahead, Ukraine’s Deputy Defence Minister Hanna Maliar said on Wednesday.

Western analysts and military officials say the effort to dislodge entrenched, powerfully armed and large numbers of Russian troops could take years.

Ukrainian troops have advanced 200-500 metres (650-1,600 feet) at various sections of the front line around the Donetsk city of Bakhmut and 300-350 metres (980-1,150 feet) in the southern Zaporizhzhia re-

presidential office said. Russian shelling of Kostiantynivka killed one civilian, with 57 houses damaged, it added.

In Odesa, three food warehouse employees were killed in a strike that also damaged homes, shops and cafes in the city’s downtown, the regional administration said on Facebook. Another 13 people were injured.

In eastern Ukraine, Donetsk province governor Pavlo Kyrylenko wrote on Telegram that at least three people died after shelling destroyed seven homes and damaged dozens more in the cities of Kramatorsk and Kostiantynivka.

Ten towns and villages along the front line in Donetsk were struck as Kyiv’s troops slowly advance, according to Ukraine’s presidential office.

Andriy Kovalov, a spokesperson for the General Staff of Ukraine’s armed forces, said the Russian military increased missile and aerial strikes as Kyiv’s forces intensify attacks along the war’s 1,000-kilometer (600-mile) front line and claim some modest gains at the beginning of their counteroffensive. In a briefing, he said strikes on the Kharkiv, Donetsk and Kirovohrad regions, in addition to the Odesa region, involved Kh22 cruise missiles, sealaunched Kalibr cruise missiles, and Iranian-made Shahed drones. Nine were intercepted.

Kovalov said Ukrainian forces had made advances in several sections and fighting was continuing in or near at least two Donetsk province communities.

Britain’s Ministry of Defence, which has regularly issued updates on the conflict, wrote on Twitter that southern Ukraine “has often been more permissible for Russian air operations” compared with other parts of the front.

At least 78 people have died and dozens are feared missing off the coast of southern Greece after a fishing boat carrying migrants capsized and sank, authorities said Wednesday.

A large search and rescue operation was launched in the area. Authorities said 104 people have been rescued so far following the nighttime incident some 75 kilometres southwest of Greece’s southern Peloponnese region.

Four of the survivors were hospitalised with symptoms of hypothermia.

It was unclear how many passengers might remain missing at sea after the Greek coast guard reported 78 dead.

Six coast guard vessels, a navy frigate, a military transport plane, an air force helico pter, several private vessels and a drone from the European Union border protection agency, Frontex, were taking part in the ongoing search.

The Italy-bound boat is believed to have sailed from the Tobruk area in eastern Libya.

(PTI): Donald Trump can continue his campaign for another term in the White House even as the beleaguered former US president has been indicted for illegally retaining classified government documents after leaving office in 2021.

Trump, 77, on Tuesday, pleaded not guilty to 37 federal felony counts related to his mishandling of classified documents at the federal courthouse in Miami, Florida. It marks the first time federal charges have been brought against a former president. This indictment is the second criminal case filed against Trump, the frontrunner for the Republican Party’s nomination in the 2024 presidential election. In early April, Trump surrendered to authorities in New York and appeared in state court to face 34 felony counts of falsifying business records in the first degree. He pleaded not guilty to those charges also. On May 9, Trump was found liable in a civil case brought by columnist E Jean Carroll, who claimed he raped her and defamed her. Trump denied those allega-

tions. The jury did not find that he raped Carroll, but did find that he sexually abused her, and ordered him to pay her roughly USD 5 million. The three cases raise an intriguing question about his bid to retake the White House in 2024: Can he still become the US president if he’s convicted in New York or Florida, or now that he’s been found liable in the Carroll case?

The short answer, from a legal perspective, is yes, according to experts.

None of the charges would bar Trump from taking office if he is convicted. A trial would take place many months from now, and Trump can freely campaign during this time.

“Nothing stops Trump from running while indicted, or even convicted,” the University of California,

Los Angeles law professor Richard Hasen told CNN. The Constitution requires only three things of the candidates: A candidate must be a natural-born citizen, at least 35 years old and a resident of the US for at least 14 years. There are a few other Constitutional restrictions that can block a person from running for president — but they don’t apply to Trump.

It’s pretty widely accepted that the list of qualifications in the Constitution is exclusive — that is, Congress or states can’t add qualifications to those listed in the Constitution,” said Derek Muller, a law professor at the University of Iowa, before Trump’s indictment. “It’s something that really doesn’t affect your ability to run as a candidate, to appear on the ballot, or to even win the election,” he was quoted as saying by CBS News.

“If you’re convicted of a felony and incarcerated, you can’t vote, but you can win the election. The point is, there were meant to be very few qualifications, and it was meant to be left to the voters or the state,” Muller said.

that he raped Carroll, but did find that he sexually abused her, and ordered him to pay her roughly USD 5 million.

“Nothing stops Trump from running while indicted, or even convicted,” the University of California, Los Angeles law professor Richard Hasen told CNN. The Constitution requires only three things of the candidates: A candidate must be a natural-born citizen, at least 35 years old and a resident of the US for at least 14 years.

There are a few other Constitutional restrictions that can block a person from running for president — but they don’t apply to Trump.

Later, delivering a lecture on G20, Dr. Borbora deliberated on the topic, “G20 under India’s Presidency” and highlighted the participants on the formation of Group of Twenty (G20), a forum for international economic cooperation that plays an important role in shaping and strengthening global architecture and governance on all major international issues.

He spoke about the Finance Track and the Sherpa Track of the G20 and the Startup20 Engagement Group, which was established under India’s G20 Presidency for the first time, recognising the role of startups in driving innovation that responds to a rapidly changing global scenario. He said a new working group on Disaster Risk Reduction would also be established under India’s Presidency, to encourage collective work by the G20, and undertake multidisciplinary research and exchange best practices on disaster risk reduction.

Dr. Borbora also briefed the participants on the theme of India’s G20 Presidency-- “Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam” or “One Earth, One Family, One Future”.

Nagaland celebrates ‘World Blood Donor Day’

DIMAPUR: Nagaland joined the world in celebrating the “World Blood Donor Day” under the global 2023 theme, “Give blood, give plasma, share life, share often,” on Wednesday.

The day aims to celebrate and thank the voluntary blood donors around the world for their “gift of blood”, sensitise the people on the importance of blood donation, and encourage more people to become new donors.

Kohima: Voluntary Blood Donors’ Association, Kohima, and Department of Health & Family Welfare (DoH&FW) jointly celebrated the “World Blood Donor Day” Wednesday at the Directorate of Health & Family Welfare (H&FW).

Special guest of the programme, DoH&FW, principal director, Dr. Vibeituonuo M. Sachu said the day provides an opportunity to celebrate and thank the voluntary blood donors across the world.

She said in many countries, blood services face the challenge of making sufficient blood blood available, while also ensuring its quality and safety. Dr. Sachu said lack access to safe blood and blood products, impacts on all patients, including those requiring regular transfusion

Speaking on 2023 theme, she said it focuses on patients requiring life-long transfusion support and underlines the role every

single person could play by giving blood or plasma. Dr.

Sachu said the theme also highlights the importance of giving blood or plasma regularly to create a safe and sustainable supply of blood and blood products that can be always available, so that all patients in need could receive timely treatment.

She also appealed to all present to get tested for their blood group so that they could donate anytime during an emergency or distress through mobile blood banks.

Delivering a keynote address, Nagaland State AIDS Control Society (NSACS) project director, Dr. Akuo Sorhie highlighted the importance of voluntary blood donation to save lives.

She said voluntary blood donation was vital for all patients including those

who require lifelong and regular transfusions.

Dr. Sorhie said voluntary plasma donation plays a major role in supporting patients with wide range of long-term conditions such as haemophilia and immune deficiencies.

Underscoring the importance of celebrating the day and extensively disseminating the message of importance of voluntary blood donation, she said the need of the hour now was to make Naga people aware of the facts and myths regarding blood donation since there was still so much fear, ignorance, and misconceptions associated with blood donation. She then suggested aggressive intervention to educate and change the mindset of the citizens.

“Voluntary blood donors are the best motivators

and inspiration to those who are healthy but yet to register or join this mission of saving lives- through your stories,” said Dr. Sorhie.

Commandant Officer, Kohima Battalion (Bn), Assam Rifles (AR), Col. SSB Sharma said there was a huge requirement of blood everywhere and that timely intervention for blood donation could save multiple lives. Sharma informed that 117 blood donors from Kohima Battalion of Assam Rifles had donated blood in the last two years and that the battalion continues to donate blood. He then requested the public to volunteer and donate blood to save lives.

The presentation of

appreciation of donors was done by Miss Nagaland 2022, Hikali Achumi. The programme was chaired by Khrievotsonuo Terhase; invocation by SBCK assistant pastor Lujeka Assumi and concluding remark by VBDAK Ainato Yeptho.

Intercontinental Cup: India take on Lebanon in a possible prelude to final

BHUBANESWAR, JUN

14 (IANS): Having already sealed their place in the Intercontinental Cup final, the Indian senior men’s football team will take on Lebanon in their last group match at the Kalinga Stadium, here on Thursday.

After seeing off Mongolia 2-0 in the opening game, the Blue Tigers edged Vanuatu 1-0 on Friday thanks to an exquisite Sunil Chhetri strike late on, which was accompanied by a joyous celebration as he announced his

wife being in the family way. Lebanon were held to a frustrating stalemate by Mongolia earlier in the day, which meant six points were enough for India to qualify for the final with a game to spare. However, any thoughts of the India-Lebanon clash being a dead rubber must be thrown into the bin. India head coach Igor Stimac only targets a win against the Cedars and is banking on his best eleven to get the job done. “We’re playing at home, and we come

out in every game with the only aim of winning it. It doesn’t matter how Lebanon fared in their previous game. They found it tough to play two games at four in the afternoon. For us, it’s going to be a difficult match, as some of their players have enormous quality,” said Stimac, on the eve of the game. “They do have weaknesses also, of course, which we could see. So, it will be an interesting game, maybe not beautiful, but definitely interesting,” he added.

Eight teams - hosts India, Australia, Colombia, Egypt, Hong Kong China, Japan, Malaysia and South Africa - are competing for the title at Chennai. Egypt are the reigning champion, having won the title in 2011. The Squash World Cup 2023 is being conducted in two phases - the first group stage and the second knockout/classification stage.

Veteran middle-order batter

Ajinkya Rahane and fastbowling all-rounder Shardul Thakur made gains in the latest ICC Test Rankings, released on Wednesday with Australian batters getting a rare achievement by occupying top three places in batting charts.

Rahane’s scores of 89 and 46 in the World Test Championship final against Australia at The Oval, which also saw him make his comeback to the Indian team, see him return to the rankings in 37th position while Thakur, who

made 51 in first innings, has moved up six places to 94th position.

In the rare occurrence, Steve Smith and Travis Head join top-ranked Marnus Labuschagne in top three batting positions following their centuries, which helped Australia beat India by 209 runs in the WTC Final.

Alex Carey has progressed 11 places to 36th after scoring 48 and 66 not out while off-spinner Nathan Lyon (up two places to sixth) and seamer Scott Boland (up five places to 36th) have also moved up after finishing with five wickets each in the match.

As the first ATP title winner from the Chinese mainland, Wu played his first pro match on grass against Kyrgios. The relative inexperience on the surface did not stop the Chinese from grabbing an impressive opening win over Kyrgios 7-5, 6-3 in the first round of the Stuttgart tournament, reports Xinhua.

“The last time I played on grass was juniors back in 2017, so six years,” said 23-year-old Wu after his victory. “I was really happy to play Nick in the first round. He’s one of the best players on grass and he served well. He aced me many times. The key for me was to stay cool, stay patient in the game and find a way.”

Kyrgios, the 2022 Wimbledon finalist, had surgery to repair a small tear in his left lateral meniscus in January and appeared to be strug -

gling physically from early in the match. Wu saved a break point in the opening game with a classy forehand on the run before making his move on return to break Kyrgios in the 12th game and claim the first set. As Kyrgios’ movement grew visibly more restricted, World No. 64 Wu claimed the only break of the second set to seal his third Top 30 win.

“It was pretty special because it was very tense, and he was holding his service games pretty easily,” said Wu, “I was suffering on serve sometimes because he has better serves than me, but I was patient in the match. I will keep going and work on my serve, and hopefully I can be a better server.”
