NEW DELHI, JUN 8

(IANS): Brain tumour cases are rising ‘steadily’ in India, and children account for 20 per cent of the increasing cases, say doctors here on the occasion of World Brain Tumour Day on Thursday.

World Brain Tumour Day is observed on June 8 every year to increase awareness and educate the public about brain tumours.

In 2020, brain tumour was ranked as the 10th most common kind of tumour among Indians. The International Association of Cancer Registries (IARC) reported that there are over 28,000 cases of brain tumours reported in India each year

ly washed daily. One should avoid adding clean and fresh water to stale or unwashed containers, as there is grave risk of water contamination while doing so.

Wash hands with soap and water before eating food and after using the washroom. The contact period between the soap and water should be 15-20 seconds, which is an important component of personal hygiene in preventing water borne diseases. Wash fruits and vegetables with clean water, and avoid consuming raw or undercooked seafood or other food items that may have been exposed to contaminated water. One should

also avoid eating stale food and other eatables left in the open. Food and drinking water should never be kept uncovered. Avoid swallowing pool or recreational water; when swimming in pools, lakes or recreational water areas, avoid swallowing the water as it may contain harmful pathogens. Maintain proper sanitation by avoiding disposing of chemicals, medications or other harmful substances down the drain or toilet, as they can contaminate water source. Do not throw garbage near the water source. Also, avoid open defecation and urination in order to prevent contamination of

water sources and do not allow surface water to get into the well.

H&FW has suggested avoiding water from ponds, lakes, streams and canals. However, if one had to depend on those sources, purify the water by using bleaching powder or by boiling. On experiencing symptoms such as diarrhea, vomiting, abdominal pain, fever or any other signs of illness after consuming water or being exposed to potentially contaminated water sources, one should seek medical attention. One can also inform health care provider about any recent water related activities and potential exposure.

MUMBAI, JUN 8 (PTI):

Reserve Bank Governor Shaktikanta Das on Thursday said about 50 per cent of Rs 2,000 notes in circulation has come back in the banking system since the RBI announced withdrawal of the highest denomination currency last month.

As on March 31, 2023, he said, Rs 2,000 notes worth Rs 3.62 lakh crore were in circulation.

“So far, Rs 1.80 lakh crore have come back after the announcement,” he said during an interaction with media after releasing the

bi-monthly monetary policy here.

About 85 per cent of Rs 2,000 notes are coming as deposits in bank accounts and this is in line with expectation, he said.

On May 19, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) announced the withdrawal of Rs 2,000 denomination banknotes as part of its currency management and permitted the exchange of such notes (up to Rs 20,000 in one go) from May 23 onwards. The exchange or deposit window is available till September 30, 2023.

The governor also urged the public not to panic for exchange or deposit of Rs 2,000 notes but should avoid last minute rush. He also made it clear that RBI is not thinking of withdrawing Rs 500 notes, or even re-introducing notes in the Rs 1,000 denomination, and requested the public not to speculate on this.

Last month, the RBI governor had said the majority of the withdrawn Rs 2,000 currency notes are expected to be returned to the banking system by the September 30 deadline.

IMD declares monsoon onset

NEW DELHI, JUN 8 (PTI):

and more than 24,000 people reportedly die due to brain tumours annually.

“The occurrence of brain tumours in India is steadily rising. More and more cases of brain tumours are reported each year in our country among people

of varied age groups. Every year 40,000 to 50,000 people are diagnosed with brain tumours, out of which 20 per cent are children,” Aditya Gupta, Director, Neurosurgery and Cyberknife Centre, Artemis Hospital, told IANS. “India is witnessing

an increasing trend of central nervous system tumours. The prevalence ranges from 5 to 10 per 1,00,000 population. Very few people know that out of these, only two per cent of tumours turn cancerous,” added Ravindra Srivastava, Director Neurosurgery, Primus Hospital. The doctors said it’s critical to recognise the early warning signals since symptoms like unexplained nausea, persistent headaches, seizures, visual problems and cognitive changes shouldn’t be disregarded.

According to Shashi Shekhar Singh, Neurosurgery, Ujala Cygnus Group of Hospitals, the risk factors for

brain tumours vary depending on the type of tumour.

“While the exact causes of brain tumours are often unknown, the factors associated with an increased risk of developing a brain tumour include age: in adults, gliomas are more common, while medulloblastomas are more prevalent in children; genetic conditions and family history; exposure to ionising radiation, such as radiation therapy for cancers or exposure to nuclear accidents; and gender: meningiomas are more common in females, while gliomas are slightly more common in males,” Singh told IANS.

The southwest monsoon hit India on Thursday with its onset over Kerala, a week later than normal, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) announced. Meteorologists earlier said Cyclone ‘Biparjoy’ had been impacting the intensity of the monsoon and that its onset over Kerala would be “mild”.

In a statement, IMD said the southwest monsoon has set in over Kerala today, June 8. “The monsoon has advanced into remaining parts of south Arabian Sea and some parts of central Arabian Sea, entire Lakshadweep area, most parts of Kerala, most parts of south Tamil Nadu, remain-

ing parts of Comorin area, Gulf of Mannar and some more parts of southwest, central and northeast Bay of Bengal today,” it added. The southwest monsoon normally sets in over Kerala on June 1 with a standard deviation of about seven days. In mid-May, the IMD said the monsoon might arrive in Kerala by June 4. Skymet had predicted the monsoon onset over Kerala on June 7, with an error margin of three days. India is expected to get normal rainfall during the southwest monsoon season despite the evolving El Nino conditions, the IMD had earlier said.

Yhome raised concerns of parents not sending their daughters to school and helping them at home but sending only the boys to school, especially in primary and middle schools. Advisor said this practice should be done away and for this, they have come up to

approach all village councils, student unions of the village and the range to be engaged.

He also said that there are almost 19,000 teachers across Nagaland and almost 2000 to 3000 teachers are using political influence.

Yhome also spoke on the need to build the calibre of leadership, stating that it was time to restrengthen and redirect the whole system by engaging the New Education Policy.

He observed that people with political influence only want to be posted in cities like Dimapur and Kohima, and those without political influence lands up serving in the remote areas and retire there. He asserted that there

Yhome also set a target to bring 1 lakh students back into government schools in two years.

He also stressed on the need to focus on pre-primary and primary schools and the need to establish more primary schools even in the unrecognized villages on need basis.

He informed that they have also been doing survey from ground level hoping to bring change in the whole system.

“I want less interference of political influence in education sector. We need to upgrade our school system, we might not see immediate result, but we will slowly reach there”, he stated.

Nagaland State Mission Director, Temsunaro Aier in her keynote address, mentioned that being in education is like firefighting every day. She said by implementing NEP 2020, so many activities have been taking place and all those taking part in the missions needs to build up their resources to face those challenges and it requires the highest level of commitment and need to work from strict time bound work. She said that the future of the children depends on the teacher’s performance. “This is not a rehabilitation camp for ailing people. Your duty is to teach in school and not to be sitting in a holiday posting,” she said.

Aier added that the main mission of this programme was to keep every children in mainstream school by 2030, and for this, they need the total commitment of every teacher. She also highlighted the need for training of educating children with special needs. Commissioner & Secretary, School Education SCERT & Vice Chairman

NEMS, Kevileno Angami, in her brief address said that, with the New Education Policy 2020 being implemented, various activities are being imposed in the state and ultimately it boils down to implementation of these activities in the blocks and schools to be carried out by the officers.

She pointed out that there are various challenges and issues when it comes to implementation of the various activities in the blocks and schools but at the same time, they are also capacitated to deal with these challenges and issues.

She stressed on the need that whatever activities are being carried out and implemented should not be just for the sake of implementing it, but to be conscious that these activities have to be meaningfully carried out and transacted in the schools.

Joint Mission Director, Samagra Shiksha Nagaland, Dr. Kevizakie Rio and Dr. Bikano Murry gave state presentations.

The program was chaired by Deputy Mission Director, Kelhikha Kenye.

Kejriwal appeals Haryana to vote for AAP

Promisesbetter education, healthcarefacilities

CHANDIGARH, JUN

8 (PTI): AAP supremo

Arvind Kejriwal on Thursday appealed to people of Haryana to give one chance to his party in the next year’s assembly polls in the state, promising to provide better education and healthcare facilities.

The Delhi chief minister, accompanied by his Punjab counterpart Bhagwant Mann and AAP’s Haryana unit chief Sushil Kumar Gupta, was addressing a gathering during ‘Tiranga Yatra’ in Haryana’s Jind, considered the nerve centre of the state’s politics.

Kejriwal, who hails from Haryana, while seeking to strike an emotional chord with the people during the roadshow, said, “Haryana is my ‘janmabhoomi’ while Delhi is my ‘karambhoomi’”.

Projecting the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) as the only viable alternative before people of Haryana, Kejriwal asked the gathering that the Congress and the BJP have ruled the state over the years, “but tell me one

PATNA, JUN 8 (IANS):

BJP’s Bihar unit President Samrat Chaudhary on Thursday said that if his party comes to power in Bihar, Bangladeshi intruders would be thrown out of the state and if anybody plays any tricks, they would either be sent to jail or “buried”.

“I want to appeal to you to bring the BJP in Bihar... I am guaranteeing you that not a single Bangladeshi intruder would be visible in the state. We will pick every Bangladeshi and throw them out from the state. If anyone would do ‘ulta-pulta’ (hanky-panky), they would either be put into the jails or buried under the soil,” Chaudhary said at the BJP’s Jan Sampark programme in Purnea district.

“The state where the BJP is in power would not allow Gunda Raj to establish there, like in Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat or Madhya Pradesh. We need a double engine government in Bihar to wipe out criminals. The state would go on a development path only when crime would be controlled. Industry would come and jobs would be created only when crime ends. So, Bihar needs a double engine government,” he said. “Last time (Union Home Minister) Amit Shah came to Purnea and the people said that the airport was not constructed here.

Students can get degrees if required credits are earned

NEW DELHI, JUN 8

(PTI): A student may be considered for the award of a qualification, including a certificate, diploma or degree, once the required number of credits have been earned irrespective of the minimum duration of the programme, a UGC panel has recommended.

The “Expert Committee to Review the Notification on the Specification of Degrees and Suggest New Degree Nomenclatures” has suggested that given the provisions for multiple entry and exit in higher education, the National Credit Framework and the Curriculum and Credit Framework for Undergraduate Programmes as envisaged under the NEP 2020, it would be appropriate to recognise qualifications at the level of undergraduate certificate, undergraduate diploma, and postgraduate diploma also.

Arvind Kejriwal with Bhagwant Mann and AAP leaders Sushil Gupta and Ashok Tanwar during the ‘Tiranga Yatra’, in Jind, Haryana, Thursday. (PTI) thing they did right”.

“For 25 years, the Congress ruled; for past nine years, the BJP is ruling,” he said. “Did they build any schools or good roads?... did they give jobs to your children or build good hospitals or ensured better irrigation facilities? Then why do you vote for them?” he asked.

He said earlier people did not have a choice as the Congress and BJP were the only options, but now the AAP is a viable alternative.

“Give me ‘ek mauka’ (one chance), we will give good education to your children and build schools and give good healthcare facilities,” he said, adding that the Congress and BJP won’t talk about these issues.

He also promised free treatment to people on the pattern of Delhi and Punjab. Without naming any outfit, Kejriwal said, “These parties did not leave any effort to loot the country.”

AAP leaders Ashok Tanwar, Anurag Dhanda and Chitra Sarwara were also present in the roadshow.

Taking a dig at the BJPled dispensation, Kejriwal said children of poor study in government schools, but these are in a bad shape in the state. He promised to set right both government and private schools when the AAP comes to power in the state.

“We did so in Delhi and Mann sahab is doing that in Punjab. Neither the

Congress nor the BJP will be able to do that, only AAP will,” he said. Pointing towards the crowds present, Kejriwal said, “All those who are unemployed, kindly raise your hands” and added, “See how many are unemployed”.

“In Delhi, we have given jobs to 12 lakh youth. In Punjab, 30,000 government jobs have so far been given while arrangements are being made to give 3 lakh more jobs,” he said.

“Khattar Sahab (Haryana CM) did not give job to anyone,” he alleged.

On the power issue, the AAP chief said, “Today, there is round-the-clock electricity in Delhi.”

He said the BJP gov-

has sanctioned Rs 1,50,000 crore for the construction of Purnea airport and extension of Darbhanga airport a couple of days ago,” he said.

Attacking Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, Chaudhary said that he is “a kind of tyre which is regularly getting punctured”. “He is claiming sometime the post of Prime Minister and sometime the Home Minister. Such a Chief Minister would not do development of the state,” he alleged.

ernment in Haryana had failed to give uninterrupted power. “The day the AAP comes to power, from the next day, 24-hour power supply will be ensured in Haryana. In Punjab too, there is no power shortage now because an honest government is ruling there,” he said. Speaking on the occasion, Mann noted that Kejriwal has changed the direction of politics of the whole country.

He told the gathering that earlier Jind used to be a part of his home district Sangrur.

“We still have relatives and friends in Jind. I felt like home after coming to Jind,” he said.

The Punjab chief minister said to bring “badlav” (chan ge) in Haryana and weed out corruption, the Tiranga Yatra is important.

He said 88 per cent households are getting zero electricity bills in Punjab. Jobs can be given, Mohalla clinics can be set up and other development work undertaken, but for that, right intent and honest administration is needed, he said.

“If this is happening in Punjab, why can’t it happen in Haryana?” Mann asked, appealing to people to bring AAP to power.

Ties with China cannot progress without peace at border: Jaishankar

NEW DELHI, JUN 8

(PTI): In clear message to Beijing, India on Thursday described as unfounded any expectation that it will normalise its ties with China when the border situation in eastern Ladakh is not normal with External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar describing the “forward deployment” of troops as the main problem.

At a press conference, Jaishankar said India also wants to improve the relations with China, but it can only be possible when there is peace and tranquillity in the border areas. He said India has made it very clear to China that until there is peace and tranquillity in border areas, the relationship between the two countries cannot progress. Jaishankar said India does not get swayed by coercion, inducements and false narratives, while citing examples of New Delhi’s approach towards the situation along the Northern border and its opposition to China’s Belt and Road Initiative. The Indian and Chinese troops are locked in a confrontation for over three years in certain friction points in eastern Ladakh even as the two sides

completed disengagement from several areas following extensive diplomatic and military talks. Jaishankar said the two sides will have to find ways for disengagement of the troops and that the current impasse is not to China’s interests either.

“The fact is that the relationship is impacted and it will continue to be impacted... If there is any expectation that somehow we will normalise (the ties)

when the border situation is not normal, that’s not a well-founded expectation,” he said, replying to a volley of questions. Asked to clarify whether China has occupi ed Indian territory following the border row that erupted in May 2020, Jaishankar said the problem is of “forward deployment of troops”. The ties between the two countries nosedived significantly following the fierce clash in the Galwan Valley in June 2020 that marked the most serious military conflict between the two sides in decades. “We want to improve relations with China. But it will be possible only when there is peace and tranquillity in border areas and if there is an agreement, it should be adhered to,” Jaishankar said.

Mysterious power loss

Withsoaring heat and perennial power cuts, the Department of Power Nagaland (DoPN) has found a novel way to address the problem by advising consumers to switch off all electrical appliances not used and also to restrict use of electrical appliances driven by induction motor on deep freezers, refrigerators and compressors of air conditions drawing 2.5 to 3 times the normal current. This is based on the belief that judicious use of electricity by consumers would have the desired effect – of significantly reducing power consumption and offset shortage of power. However, the well meaning and simplistic advice of the department needs to be taken with a pinch of salt. For one, indiscipline as the khushi-khushi syndrome has unfortunately become the bane of progress. It is to be noted that roads, power, agriculture and education are the tetra of progress and play crucial roles in the lives of the common people everyday. Nagaland has failed to deliver on roads and power, which play the biggest role in development. This summer, acute power shortage is due to non availability from sources due to insufficient water in the dams. Earlier during monsoon months, power cuts were explained as disruptions caused by falling trees on High Tension power cables. Again in winter, the explanation was the paucity of water in the reservoirs inhibit generation of power. When the dams have less water and so power generation is restricted. Over and above these perennial problems, Nagaland is also afflicted by the shortfall in revenue that has left huge deficit in revenue for as many decades. Nagaland requires around 180 MW of power which isn’t much in comparison with other states. However even for a small state with hardly any power generating capacity; the state has to entirely depend upon purchase of power. The loss is a big challenge to the capability of the planners in the DoPN as they need to find out ways and means on how to plug the loss and increase revenue collection. According to estimates, the DoPN is losing around 30% of power due to two factors- technical loss and commercial loss. Nagaland buys electricity worth around Rs.400 Crores annually which is re-soled to the consumers by the power department. However, the DoPN has been able to collect only around Rs.162 crores (As per 2019-2020). The revenue loss if translated into MW comes to around 30MW to 40 MW annually. Such a massive loss of revenue as well as power is a serious matter and it is strange that the government hasn’t decided to accord it utmost importance. Among districts, Dimapur has a huge power demand that is needed to power the economy but instead, fluctuations and long periods of power cuts have caused serious problems. At a time when the state is supposed to have achieved remarkable results going by the tall claims of the past decades, Dimapur, the so-called industrial and trade capital of the state remains without power for long hours. It has been over three decades that the Department of Power Nagaland(DoPN) has been lamenting about power loss but the very fact that it is still going on raises pertinent questions about the ability or inability of the department to check the perennial loss. Something needs to be done and the DoPN should start with providing pre-paid meters and guarantee adequate power instead of merely hoping on saving power when there is none.

What’s Next To Do?

If you know these things, blessed are you if you do them.

—John 13:17

Be determined to know more than others. If you yourself do not cut the lines that tie you to the dock, God will have to use a storm to sever them and to send you out to sea. Put everything in your life afloat upon God, going out to sea on the great swelling tide of His purpose, and your eyes will be opened. If you believe in Jesus, you are not to spend all your time in the calm waters just inside the harbor, full of joy, but always tied to the dock. You have to get out past the harbor into the great depths of God, and begin to know things for yourself— begin to have spiritual discernment.

When you know that you should do something and you do it, immediately you know more. Examine where you have become sluggish, where you began losing interest spiritually, and you will find that it goes back to a point where you did not do something you knew you should do. You did not do it because there seemed to be no immediate call to do it. But now you have no insight or discernment, and at a time of crisis you are spiritually distracted instead of spiritually self-controlled. It is a dangerous thing to refuse to continue learning and knowing more.

The counterfeit of obedience is a state of mind in which you create your own opportunities to sacrifice yourself, and your zeal and enthusiasm are mistaken for discernment. It is easier to sacrifice yourself than to fulfill your spiritual destiny, which is stated in Romans 12:1-2. It is much better to fulfill the purpose of God in your life by discerning His will than it is to perform great acts of self-sacrifice. “Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice…” (1 Samuel 15:22). Beware of paying attention or going back to what you once were, when God wants you to be something that you have never been. “If anyone wills to do His will, he shall know…” (John 7:17).

Helplessly hoping- the Naga spirit- emergence thereof !

There is a crying need to understand what the General common people have been going through for the last eight decades and in fact seem to be facing today without much to look forward to. Perhaps we need to analyze how the society has suffered or perhaps degenerated over the years. As a senior citizen of the state, it is absolutely necessary for me to mention some hard facts- perhaps known to most but the silence from most quarters have been deafening! Should we continue to suffer in silence or raise our voices! In order that we can exist as normal society like the rest of the peaceful and progressive communities/ societies in the rest of the World leaving good space for Gen next!

Nagas were simple honest people and honored every word they expressed. They were hard working people living in a classless society. There was no caste system and everyone mingled together for working in fields or during festivities or social events. It was a harmoni-

ous community existence. Nagas were free people and never subjugated by Indians or other external forces. In short, by default the Nagas got included in India as the 16th State of the union of India though till today the struggle for Independence continues but Nagas are scattered in different states in India like Assam, Arunachal Pradesh and Manipur. There are significant number of Nagas in Burma ( Myanmar). The scope for a Naga Independent homeland comprising of all Nagas is now becoming more and more remote. Nagas have also evolved- literacy has improved tremendously, awareness particularly due explosion of information through internet, mobile phones and advancement in technology etc.. but the quality of life may not have improved, rather it has actually gone down. Corruption has pervaded deeply in to all sections of society as can be seen in the recently concluded general elections to the 14 NLA or in the working system in the Government or for that matter in any private

sector. Honesty has taken a back seat, dignity of labour has vanished- in fact we have become absolutely dependent on People of doubtful nationality. The virtues passed down by our forefathers, like honesty, integrity, simplicity and humility have become very scarce. Where are we headed? – Disaster! There is an absolute necessity to introspect, realize where we are going wrong, look around us at the rest of the communities doing well and resolve to change ourselves and build on our strengths and work towards a better future and leave a behind a legacy worthy for Gen next to inherit and prosper. Our neighbors in the Northeast have given us excellent examples which we can emulate- to cite a few… sportspersons of Manipur and Assam, the traffic system in Mizoram, Power projects in Arunachal Pradesh and Tripura and perhaps many more which need not be listed out here. We should not be stuck with “ worst performing State “ as per Niti Aayog. If we admit truthfully, we are perhaps

the most divided people. The Tenyimia-Enpo-Cntcgroups which did not exist earlier has emerged in the last two decades on the one hand and the various factions-NSCN(IM)-NNPGS further split into various factions and the NNC/ Federal/ Accordist/NonAccordist and a few more on the other. The question we need to be asking ourselves is “ Who is the real Naga ? “ or perhaps Are Nagas really one people looking towards a common future? Who is responsible for the mess? Let us ponder. Some issues which need to tackled urgently are required to be discussed and addressed:

1. To try and bring all Nagas on the same page, minimize tribalism, factionalism, nepotism and promote Nagaism with a clear vision for the journey ahead. It will not be a smooth journey unless there is meeting of minds and unity of purpose

2. To broaden the resource base of the stateStart petroleum and Gas production-lift prohibitioncommercial production of Meat/ Agricultural/

Horticultural production etc..

3. Seriously address the issue of illegal immigrants before we are overwhelmed but keeping in mind the ground realities and the fact that we are a part of a greater nation that controls us.

4. Take up the Act East Policy of Government of India focusing on connectivity and promotion of trade and commerce with neighbouring ASEAN countries. This can be a game changer.

5. Reduce dependence on external forces for sustenance: Can we claim excellence or be leading in any economic or academic or social life. What are we producing or exporting or for that matter – What is our gross state domestic product and what is the share in the GDP of the country ?

6. Bring out a clear policy for the youth especially to address issue of unemployment as Government sector is already saturated- focus must be to promote private sector and entrepreneurship- focus on self reliance including

dignity of labour, integrity, humility etc..

7. Promote and preserve our rich culture and heritage and equally promote a common medium of communication as Nagas. We must remember that we are a small community in the world striving to survive. Can we not learn lessons from the experience of Manipur-where there is so much clash between Meities and Kukis/Zous/ Mizos/Paiteis or the hill people and the plains people in the name of religion. Surely we should look at the ethnic divide between North and South India. Where do we stand as Nagas ? Let us all work together and build a truly resilient, self reliant, dynamic, united and progressive society and forge ahead with our heads held high and exist in the world comity on equal terms.

Long live Nagas !

North East Global Investors Summit 2023: Unlocking opportunities for Eastern Nagaland?

“Imeasure the progress of the State of Nagaland by the degree of progress which ‘Noklak’ District has achieved. I measure the progress of the Naga Tribes by the degree of progress which ‘Khiamniungan’ and ‘Tikhir’ Tribes have achieved. I measure the progress of Naga Women by the degree of progress which ‘Eastern Naga’ women has achieved.” “So the last shall be first, and the first last: for many be called, but few chosen.” (Matthew 20:16) The Nagaland government, in collaboration with the DoNER ministry, successfully organized the two-day State Round Table of the North East Global Investors Summit 2023 at Chumoukedima police complex. The event aimed to discuss specific areas in Nagaland that are ripe for investment and exploration.

The Ministry of DoNER, Government of India, has given a platform to states in the northeast region to organize the Northeast Global Investors Summit 2023, an event aimed at showcasing the investment and trade potential of the Northeast Region of India. With a focus on highlighting the geostrategic advantage, abundant natural resources, skilled workforce, and access to captive markets in the region and neighboring countries, the summit aims to propel the growth and development of the Northeast region.

However, in the context of the state of Nagaland we cannot ignore the need to explore the significance of the summit for the Eastern region of Nagaland, the need for equitable investment and business opportunities, and the role of the government in creating an investor-friendly ecosystem in the ‘Forgotten Frontier’.

As Nagaland gears up to embrace the possibility of the rise of the “Frontier Naga Territory”, it becomes crucial for the Government of Nagaland to formulate a comprehensive, independent blueprint for the economic, industrial, and infrastructural development of the eastern region. With the growing significance of the region in the context of the G20 nations, it is necessary to understand the need for a dedicated plan to unlock the immense potential of Eastern Nagaland and outlines key areas that require strategic attention to lay down the path to prosperity for the long neglected region which majestically spread over fifty percent of the total area of

the state of Nagaland. The blueprint that I have been suggesting here should focus on fostering economic empowerment by identifying key sectors with high growth potential in the eastern region. Industries such as agriculture, tourism, handloom and handicrafts, and renewable energy can be given priority. The government of Nagaland-in collaboration with New Delhi should provide necessary support, including financial incentives, skill development programs, and access to markets, to encourage entrepreneurship and attract investments in these sectors. Adequate infrastructure is vital for attracting investments and facilitating overall development. The blueprint should outline plans for improving connectivity, including high quality road networks, and air transportation. Additionally, investments in power infrastructure, telecommunications, and water management systems are essential to create a conducive environment for businesses and residents in Eastern Nagaland. Also, Eastern Nagaland’s pristine landscapes, unique cultural heritage and biodiversity offer immense potential for tourism. The blueprint should include strategies for developing tourist infrastructure, promoting sustainable tourism practices, and preserving local traditions and heritage. By tapping into the region’s unique attractions, Eastern Nagaland can become a sought-after destination for both domestic and international tourists.

Moreover, Human capital development plays a crucial role in economic growth. The blueprint should emphasize the establishment of quality educational institutions, vocational training centers, and skill development programs on war footing. This will equip the local population with the necessary skills to proactively engage and participate in the emerging industries and enhance employability.

Eastern Nagaland, with its unique cultural heritage, breathtaking landscapes, and untapped resources, holds immense potential for economic growth and development.

As the Northeast region emerges as a new, promising frontier for businesses, Eastern Nagaland has the opportunity to position itself as a vital player (a great catalyst) in the investment landscape. The Northeast Global Investors Summit

2023 that was concluded in Chumukedima should have served as a platform to independently showcase the eastern region’s ‘unique’ potential and attract investments in various sectors, ranging from infrastructure development to tourism, agriculture, manufacturing and many other areas. In the context of Northeast Global Investors Summit 2023, certain things need to be understood. Prima facie, as we know, historically, investment and industrial development in Nagaland have been concentrated in urban centers like Kohima, Dimapur, Chumukedima, Niuland (also to Mokokchung, Phek, Peren, Wokha) while the eastern region has been grossly neglected. The Northeast Global Investors Summit 2023 presents a valuable opportunity to shift the spotlight towards Eastern Nagaland and foster inclusive growth by ensuring that investment and business opportunities are distributed across the entire state. Historically, as stated before, the development focus in Nagaland has been concentrated in certain regions, often neglecting the potential and needs of the eastern part of the state. The government, along with various stakeholders, should seize this opportunity to showcase the immense potential of Eastern Nagaland and demonstrate their commitment to its inclusive development. By redirecting focus and spreading investment across the entire state, we can ensure that the benefits of economic growth and prosperity reach all corners of Nagaland, empowering its people and fostering a more equitable society. The time has come for “Kohima” to get emotionally aligned with Eastern Nagaland for a better, inclusive future of Nagaland.

To attract large-scale national and global investments, it is high time that the government of Nagaland must create a conducive environment for businesses in Eastern Nagaland. This includes establishing a single-window clearance system, reducing bureaucratic red tape, Reduction in Compliance Burden, policy measures to boost domestic manufacturing through Public Procurement Orders, Phased Manufacturing Programme (PMP), Schemes for Production Linked Incentives (PLI), One District One Product, Deliberate public expenditure and fostering an investor-friendly ecosystem that encourages

Ease of Doing Business.

Special economic zones and industrial clusters can also be developed on war footing in collaboration with the local communities to cater to the specific needs of the region in addition to constructive steps that need to be taken to develop and empower the local population in general. Needless to mention, however, we have three so-called “International Trade Centers” in Eastern Nagaland which at present have been kept in totally pathetic, dilapidated condition- reviving them to their well-deserved glory could be the first step towards building an economically independent and prosperous Nagaland.

The development of Eastern Nagaland should be a priority to ensure economic justice and inclusivity. By providing equal opportunities for the region to participate in the growth of the state and the nation, Eastern Nagaland can break free from the shackles of poverty and economic oppression. The creation of a Frontier Naga Territory would further enhance the responsibility of the government to uplift the region and become a catalyst for overall growth. The possibility of rise of the “Frontier Naga Territory” brings with it increased responsibility for the Government of Nagaland to address economic disparities and pave the way for inclusive growth.

The Northeast Global Investors Summit 2023 may hold immense promise for Eastern Nagaland as it aims to unlock investment and business opportunities in the region provided it is on the super priority list of the Government of Nagaland. It is essential for the government of Nagaland to prioritize the development of Eastern Nagaland, provide an investor-friendly ecosystem, and ensure equitable distribution of investment and industrial development. By leveraging the potential of Eastern Nagaland, the region can contribute significantly to the growth of Nagaland and the nation at large. The summit can also serve as a stepping stone towards a brighter future, where Eastern Nagaland emerges as a dynamic hub of economic activity, empowering its people and fostering inclusive growth. The time has come for the Government of Nagaland to fulfill its constitutional commitment to the people of Eastern Nagaland, not only for the betterment of the region but also in the

national and global interest of the nation. Eastern Nagaland has long been marginalized and neglected, with almost nil access to basic civic amenities and opportunities for development.

However, the possibility of the rise of the “Frontier Naga Territory” as a great ‘constitutional experiment’ presents a unique opportunity for the Government of Nagaland to rectify this historical injustice and pave the way for inclusive growth.

The government must recognize that the development of Eastern Nagaland is not only a matter of regional significance but also crucial for the overall progress and prosperity of the nation. By investing in the economic, industrial, and infrastructural development of the region, the government can tap into the immense potential that Eastern Nagaland holds. This will not only uplift the lives of the people living in the region in subhuman conditions but also contribute to the nation’s growth trajectory.

Furthermore, neglecting the development of Eastern Nagaland would be a disservice to the constitutional commitment of providing equal opportunities and benefits to all citizens. It is imperative for the government to ensure that the people of Eastern Nagaland have access to quality education, healthcare, employment opportunities, and a conducive business environment. This will not only empower the local population but also enhance the region’s contribution to the nation’s economy and strengthen its position on the global stage. The government must stand true to its constitutional commitment and prioritize the development of Eastern Nagaland. By doing so, it will not only fulfill its obligations to the people of the region but also promote the national interest, fostering a more equitable and prosperous nation for all.

Creating an independent firm blueprint for the economic, industrial, and infrastructural development of Eastern Nagaland is of utmost importance as the region prepares for positively dynamic ‘Constitutional Transformation’ considering the possibility of the rise of the “Frontier Naga Territory” in near future with new political dimensions in the new arena of governance with organic political leadership which will rise with the dawn of Frontier Naga Territory. While making any policy decision

especially in the context of ‘Commerce, Industries and Investment’ for the state of Nagaland this developing story of the Eastern Nagaland should not be ignored by the state authority and its machinery- at this juncture twenty current members of Nagaland State Legislative Assembly representing the eastern nagaland region need to play their constructive role communicating and advocating the ‘investment’ potential of their own regions/areas/constituencies and share their own ideas/ plans through presentations with the government in the best interest of the eastern naga people. The necessary ‘state blueprint’ for the Eastern world should be driven by a clear vision, taking into account the specific needs and potential of the region. By focusing on economic empowerment, infrastructure development, education and skill enhancement, tourism promotion, and strategic collaborations, Eastern Nagaland can unleash its true potential and contribute significantly to the overall growth of Nagaland. The Government of Nagaland must assume its increased responsibility towards the eastern region through local and global economic as well as industrial partners and ensure that the blueprint is effectively implemented in proactive collaboration with the local stakeholders, thereby creating a prosperous future for the people of Eastern Nagaland and contributing to the nation’s progress on the global stage.

Finally, I believe that the development of the most backward, remotest, challenging and complex district in Eastern Nagaland- The Noklak could serve as a best yardstick for the overall development and prosperity of the state of Nagaland. If we truly aspire for the comprehensive development of Nagaland, it is crucial that we prioritize the upliftment of the most challenging, most backward districts like Noklak. We can set a benchmark for progress and prosperity not just in Noklak or the Eastern region but throughout the state. By doing so, in the interest of the constitutional rights of the people, prosperity of the state, and the global aspirations of the nation, we can establish a strong foundation for the inclusive growth of the nagas and the Nagaland, ensuring that no region and no citizen is left behind.

Chopped, boiled body parts found

THANE, JUN 8 (PTI): A 56-year-old man accused of killing his live-in partner and chopping and boiling her body parts in Maharashtra’s Thane district was sent to police custody till June 16 by a court on Thursday as gory details emerged about the horrific crime during investigation, evoking memories of the last year’s Shraddha Walkar case.

The accused, Manoj Sane, who worked at a ration shop, kept the woman’s chopped body parts in three buckets in their rented flat in Mira Road (East), a suburb of Mumbai, and tried to hide the stench by spraying room freshener, his neighbours said though a motive behind the gruesome murder remains unclear so far.

According to FIR registered by the police, Sane not only boiled body pieces in a pressure cooker and an utensil after cutting them, but also roasted them and put in a bucket and tub.

It is suspected the murder took place on June 4, but came to light on June 7. Sane was arrested and produced before a Thane court which remanded him to police custody till June 16.

Neighbours also told the police Sane had been feeding stray dogs for the past few days, something he had never done before.

While a case has been registered against Sane under Indian Penal Code sections 302 (murder) and 201 (destruction of evidence), the motive behind the crime is yet to be ascertained, said

Canada deportation: Punjab to provide free legal aid to students

CHANDIGARH, JUN 8 (PTI): Punjab NRI Affairs

Minister Kuldeep Singh

Dhaliwal Thursday said the state government will provide free legal assistance to around 700 Indian students who are facing deportation from Canada.

The Indian students, mostly from Punjab, are facing deportation after the authorities in Canada found “admission offer letters” to educational institutions to be fake. The matter came to light in March when these students applied for permanent residency in Canada.

In a statement, Dhaliwal said most of these students belong to Punjab and they will be assisted by lawyers who are experts in immigration laws in Canada.

Besides, Dhaliwal has also written to all MPs of Punjab origin in Canada to solve the issue of these students so that the future of the children can be secured.

On Tuesday, Dhaliwal had sought intervention of

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar in the matter.

Presiding over a meeting with civil and police officers associated with the NRI department here, Dhaliwal issued instructions to all deputy commissioners and senior superintendents of police to scrutinize documents of travel agents and immigration agencies and send a report by July 10. He expressed concern that many travel agents are running immigration agencies illegally. Dhaliwal said Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has already given clear instructions to improve the system. He said if the system is transparent and clean, then there will be less scope for human trafficking by illegal travel and immigration agencies. A special campaign against fake travel agents and immigration agencies would soon be launched in Punjab so that nobody could be involved in human trafficking, he said.

Victim Saraswati Vaidya (36) was in a live-in relationship with Sane, and the couple resided in flat no. 704 on the seventh floor of Akashdeep building in Mira Road (East) for the past three years, the official said.

Another police official told PTI that a neighbour experienced a foul smell emanating from Sane’s flat on Wednesday. Sane appeared nervous when he asked him about the stench.

Sane then stepped out with a black sack and told the neighbour he would be back

However, neighbours felt something was amiss and immediately alerted the police.

Police broke open the door after there was no response from inside. While Sane was in the flat, it reeked of an unbearable smell, said the official. In the bedroom, they found a plastic bag and a blood-stained saw. But the seasoned cops were stunned when they entered the kitchen, he said.

On the kitchen platform, police found boiled human flesh in a pressure cooker and in a few vessels with the woman’s hair lying on the floor. Half-burnt bones and flesh were kept in the sink and in buckets and tubs, the official said.

Neighbours told the media the couple mostly kept to themselves, but they did not hear the two quarrelling.

Citing their preliminary probe, a senior police official said Sane most likely killed Vaidya on June 4 and was trying to dispose of the body parts.

NEW DELHI, JUN 8

(PTI): India has successfully carried out a night launch of new generation nuclear capable ballistic missile ‘Agni Prime’ from the Abdul Kalam Island off the coast of Odisha, marking a boost to the country’s strategic weaponry.

The first pre-induction night launch of the missile with a strike range of 1,000 to 2,000 km was carried out on Wednesday by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and the elite strategic forces command, officials said. The defence ministry said the test-firing met all the desired objectives and that it paved the way for induction of the system into the armed forces. The test-firing of the missile came amid India’s lingering border row with China.

“New generation ballistic missile ‘Agni Prime’ was successfully flight-tested by DRDO from Dr APJ Abdul Kalam Island off the coast of Odisha on June 7,” the ministry said.

AI flight carrying stranded passengers from Russia lands at San Francisco

MUMBAI, JUN 8 (PTI):

An Air India flight landed safely in San Francisco on Thursday carrying 216 passengers and 16 crew members from Magadan in far east Russia where they were stranded for two days after the original aircraft had to be diverted following a mid-air engine glitch.

The airline apologised to the customers for the “extended delay”, regretted the disruption and inconvenience caused to them and also announced full refund of their ticket price along with a voucher for future travel on Air India.

Air India’s non-stop flight AI-173 for San Francisco had taken off from Delhi on June 6 at 4.23 am and was scheduled to land in San Francisco the next day at 7 am (local time).

However, one of the Boeing 777-200LR engines

suffered a glitch mid-air, forcing the cockpit crew to land the aircraft in emergency at an airport in the port city of Magadan.

On Wednesday, Air India dispatched a ferry flight from Mumbai to Magadan, with food, essentials and a team of engineers, to fly the stranded passengers and crew to their destination, which landed there at 0614 hours (local time) on June 8 and later departed for San Francisco from the port city at 1027 hours.

“Flight AI173D landed safely in San Francisco (SFO) at 0007 hours on 08 June 2023 (local time),” the carrier said.

The touchdown for these 232 persons at San Francisco at 7 minutes past midnight on Thursday, however, happened after more than 56 hours from

Magadan is located on the shores of the Sea of Okhotsk in north-eastern Russia and falls under the administrative centre of Magadan Oblast. The port town is about 10,167 kilometres from Moscow. It takes around 7 hours and 37 minutes to reach Magadan from Moscow by air.

Air India, which is now owned by the homegrown salt-to-steel conglomerate Tata Group, has announced it will compensate all passengers with “full refund and voucher for travel in future” for this “extended delay”.

BENGALURU, JUN 8

(IANS): Amid the warning of the BJP that it won’t sit quiet over revision of the academic syllabus in the state, Karnataka’s Congress government on Thursday said that it has already taken up the process of revision of textbooks.

Education Minister Madhu Bangarappa told the Assembly that during the ongoing academic year, the “unscientific” and “anti-constitutional” content would be revised. “The previous BJP government has added objectionable content in the syllabus. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah himself is concerned about revision of those aspects,” he said.

“Many rounds of talks have taken place with academic experts. Authors and litterateurs have also given their opinions. The experts who are giving advice that the syllabus taught to children should be scientific and have social orientation are

not connected to any political parties. “The suggestion is given with a concern that the young minds should not be fed with the wrong knowledge. The experts will also give their recommendations on which aspects of the syllabus should be continued and which of them should be dropped. Based on that the government has sent a circular to the schools,” Bangarappa said.

“Since the textbooks have already been published and reached schools, it is not possible to publish revised syllabus. Presently, the students are not taught the syllabus yet. The government will release the guidelines at an appropriate time in this regard. A decision would be taken in this regard in the next cabinet meeting,” he added.

“The action will be taken in the interest of the children. These are very sensitive matters. They have to be discussed in the cabinet. There is also a need for large scale discussions and it has to be done keeping the interest of the children in mind,” the minister noted.

The previous BJP government has revised the state syllabus and added lessons on RSS founder Keshav Baliram Hedgewar and included texts of right wing thinkers stirring a huge controversy.

RBI leaves interest rates unchanged for 2nd time

MUMBAI, JUN 8 (PTI):

After unanimously pausing for the second time in a row, the Reserve Bank on Thursday reiterated that leaving the key rates and the stance unchanged “is not a pivot but only a pause” and that future policy actions will purely be data-dependent as a durable fall in inflation is still a long way.

Earlier in the day, the RBI governor-led rate-setting panel MPC unanimously left the repo rate unchanged at 6.50 per cent and maintained that they will continue to work towards withdrawing policy accommodation.

While consumer price index -based inflation eased in March and April and moved into the tolerance band, headline inflation is still above the mandated target of 4 per cent and is expected to remain so during the rest of the current fiscal, said Governor Shak-

the media about what holds back the MPC and RBI from uttering the words ‘end of rate hikes’ or the beginning of a neutral or accommodative policy stance.

“It is not a pivot; I reiterate this is only a pause, which is the second one in two successive reviews. Our future policy actions will purely be dependent on evolving situations.

tikanta Das announcing the monetary policy.

“Therefore, close and continued vigil on the evolving inflation outlook is absolutely necessary, especially as the monsoon outlook and the impact of El Nino remain uncertain.

Our goal is to achieve the inflation target of 4 per cent in a durable manner and not just keeping inflation within the comfort band of 2-6 per cent,” Das told reporters at a post-policy presser.

The governor parried repeated questions from

Because even though the recent fall in headline inflation to within the target band (led mainly by the cooling core inflation), we need to ensure that it is durable, and therefore there is no room for complacency on inflation,” Das said. Explaining that RBI is only on a pause and that there is no change to a neutral/accommodative stance, Das said, “our objective is to ensure that inflation aligns with the mandated target on a durable basis and not a one-off.

Further, research is also ongoing to understand the possible role of certain environmental factors in the development of brain tumours.

Some studies have suggested potential associations between exposure to certain chemicals or electromagnetic fields and an increased risk of brain tumours. However, more research is needed to establish definitive links.

The health experts called for a healthy lifestyle that includes a balanced diet, frequent exercise and enough sleep to promote general brain health and reduce the risk of brain tumours.

Essential strategies in lowering the risk also include keeping the brain safe from damage and injury and avoiding exposure to toxic substances.

However, “it’s important to note that the majority of brain tumours occur in individuals without any identifiable risk factors. Most cases are sporadic, meaning they occur by chance without a known cause,” Singh said.

“If you have concerns about your risk of developing a brain tumour, it’s best to consult with a healthcare professional who can assess your individual situation and provide appropriate guidance,” he added.

NEW

DELHI, JUN 8

(PTI): Mother Dairy, which is a leading milk supplier in Delhi-NCR, on Thursday said it has reduced the maximum retail price (MRP) of edible oils sold under Dhara brand by Rs 10 per litre and the stocks with new rates will be available in the market from next week.

The reduction in the MRP is in line with a fall in prices of edible oils in the global market, the company said.

Cooking oils are generally sold by retailers at a price below the MRP printed on the bottles/packets.

Last week, the Centre directed edible oil industry bodies to advise their members to further reduce the MRP of major edible oils by Rs 8-12 per litre with immediate effect.

“The maximum retail price (MRP) of all variants of Dhara edible oils is being reduced by Rs 10 per litre on account of the continued decline in edible

oil prices internationally and better availability of domestic crops such as mustard,” a company spokesperson said.

The revised MRP stocks are slated to hit the market within a week, the spokesperson added.

The new rate of Dhara refined soyabean oil will be Rs 140 per litre, while Dhara refined rice bran oil MRP has been cut down to Rs 160 per litre.

The new MRP of Dhara refined vegetable oil will now be Rs 200 per litre.

Dhara kachi ghani mustard oil will be available at a MRP of Rs 160 per litre, while Dhara mustard oil at Rs 158.

The MRP of Dhara refined sunflower oil will now be Rs 150 per litre.

Dhara groundnut oil will be sold at a MRP of Rs 230 per litre, said Mother Dairy, which sells more than 30 lakh litres of milk per day in Delhi-NCR. Besides dairy products and edible oils, it is also into marketing

of fruits and vegetables. On June 2, Food Secretary Sanjeev Chopra held a meeting with the leading industry representatives, including Solvent Extraction Association of India (SEA) and Indian Vegetable Oil Producers’ Association (IVPA) to discuss further reduction in the retail prices of edible oils amidst a continued fall in the global prices. “Some companies which have not reduced their prices and their MRP is higher than other brands have also been advised to reduce their prices,” the food ministry had said.

KHERSON, JUN 8(AP):

Russian forces on Thursday shelled a southern Ukrainian city that was inundated in a catastrophic dam collapse, Ukrainian officials said, forcing a suspension of some rescue work hours after President Volodymyr Zelenskyy traveled to the area to assess the damage.

At least five people have died, many are homeless, and tens of thousands are without drinking water after the Kakhovka dam’s destruction. Ukraine accused Russia of blowing of the facility, which Moscow’s forces controlled, while Russia said Ukraine bombarded it.

The ensuig flooding has ruined crops, displaced land mines, wrought widespread environmental damage, and set the stage for long-term electricity

PTI defectors launch new political party in Pakistan

“The strikes began during evacuation of the residents, whose houses were flooded,” the ministry said. “Russia has abandoned people in calamity in the occupied part of the Kherson region. It continues to prevent Ukraine from saving the most valuable — human lives.”

The dam lay along Dnieper River, a pivotal waterway that forms part of the front line between Russian and Ukrainian forces.

Jahangir Tareen announces new political party named IPP during a press conference, in Lahore, Thursday.

LAHORE, JUN 8 (PTI):

PARIS, JUN 8 (AP): As bystanders screamed for help, a man with a knife stabbed four young children at a lakeside park in the French Alps on Thursday, assaulting at least one in a stroller repeatedly. The children between 22 months and 3 years old suffered life-threatening injuries, and two adults also were wounded, authorities said.

shortages. Exclusive drone footage captured by The Associated Press showed the ruined dam falling into the flooded river and hundreds of submerged homes, greenhouses and even a church.

In Kherson city, the largest municipality affected, repeated Russian shelling echoed overhead in the early afternoon not far from a square where emergency crews and volunteers were dispensing aid. Some evacuation points in the city were hit, wounding eight people, according to Ukraine’s Ministry of Internal Affairs.

As shells landed in floodwaters, rescue workers temporarily suspended efforts to retrieve stranded residents and pets in an area that Zelenskyy had visited only hours earlier.

In recent weeks, Ukraine intensified shelling of Russian positions, signaling a long-expected counteroffensive could finally be getting underway. Kyiv has been silent about the start of any such campaign.

Amid the fighting, both sides were coping with the fallout from the burst dam. On Thursday, Ukrainian rescue workers stepped up efforts to get drinking water, medical care and other support to beleaguered residents.

Zelenskyy traveled to Kherson to see the efforts firsthand. He visited an aid distribution point and a medical facility and ordered Ukrainian officials to provide a “fair valuation” of the devastation to help compensate residents, his office said in an online update.

In a setback to Pakistan’s beleaguered former prime minister Imran Khan, scores of disgruntled leaders on Thursday launched a new political party - believed to be backed by the powerful military - to fight the general elections likely to be held in October.

Sugar baron and Khan’s old friend Jahangir Khan Tareen, who is leading the group of leaders who quit the Pakistan Tehreeke-Insaf (PTI) party in the wake of May 9 attacks on military installations, announced the launch of the Istehkam-e-Pakistan Party (IPP) during a press conference in Lahore.

“We are laying the foundation of a new political party - Istehkam-e-Pakistan Party,” said Tareen, flanked by former PTI leaders including Aleem Khan, Imran Ismail and others.

Tareen, who played a major role in the formation of the Imran Khan-led government in 2018, said that

he joined politics to play his role for the betterment of the country.

The millionaire parted ways with Khan when a money laundering case was registered against him during the PTI-led government.

“We have gathered at one platform to make joint efforts to lift the country out of this quagmire,” said Tareen, who was disqualified for life after the Supreme Court ruled in 2017 that he was found guilty in assets beyond means case. He said that the country needed a political leadership which could resolve all prevailing issues including social, economic and others.

He also said that May 9 vandalism culprits should be brought to book “or else the houses of political opponents will be attacked in the future”. The country, he further said, needs a new political leadership which could put it on a path of progress saying that people have lost all hope in the current political system.

A suspect, identified by police as a 31-year-old Syrian, was detained in connection with the horrific attack in the Alpine and lakeside town of Annecy. French Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne said he had refugee status in Sweden.

A prosecutor leading the investigation said the man’s motives were unknown but did not appear to be terrorism-related.

The helplessness of the young victims and the savagery of the attack sickened France.

Lead prosecutor Line Bonnet-Mathis said all four children suffered life-threatening knife wounds. The youngest is 22 months old, two are age 2 and the oldest is 3, she said. Two of them were tourists, she said.

One of the young victims is British, the prosecutor and British authorities said. There was confusion over the nationality of the other child who was not from France. BonnetMathis said the child was

Dutch, but Germany’s chancellor said one of the child victims was German.

One adult also suffered knife wounds and a second adult was hurt both with the attacker’s knife and later by a shot fired by police as they were making the arrest, Bonnet-Mathis said.

Video appearing to show the attack in and around a children’s play park was posted on social media. The footage showed a man in dark glasses and with a blue scarf covering his head brandishing a knife, as people screamed for help.

The man appeared to shout “on name of Jesus Christ” as he waved his knife in the air, while people nearby could be heard screaming: “Police! Police!”

Help!” and ramming the stroller into the barriers around the site in her terror. She tried to fend off the attacker but couldn’t keep him from leaning over the stroller and stabbing downward repeatedly. Afterward, the man strolled almost casually out of the park, letting himself out through a gate, with the man carrying two rucksacks still chasing after him.

French President Emmanuel Macron described the assault as an “attack of absolute cowardice.” Of the victims, he said “children and an adult are between life and death.”

The song ‘Phir Aur Kya Chahiye’ from the Vicky Kaushal and Sara Ali Khan-starrer ‘Zara Hatke Zara Bachke’ has topped the Billboard India top 25 list. The song has been composed by the music director duo Sachin-Jigar, who are known for hit tracks such as ‘Jeena Jeena’, ‘Babaji Ki Booti’ and the more recent ‘Apna Bana Le’ from ‘Bhediya’.

India is set to host the Miss World 2023 competition, as the coveted international beauty pageant makes its return to the country after nearly three decades.

The much anticipated 71st edition of Miss World is expected to take place in November this year, the final dates of which are yet to be ascertained.

Reacting to the same, Sachin-Jigar said in a statement: “We are grateful and overjoyed that ‘Phir Aur Kya Chahiye’ has been showered with so much love. It feels great to see the audiences resonate with the song.”

KOHIMA, JUN 8 (NPN):

Thanks to the Kohima Forest Division, anyone can be an ambassador of saving the planet by planting trees at the comfort of his or her home by just clicking on ‘Clicktoplant. com.’ Through the website, which is an initiative of the Kohima Forest Divisio n, people can plant a tree sapling online. The programme has been initiated under the leadership of divisional forest officer (DFO) Rajkumar M.

The website was launched on the occasion of the World Environment Day on June 5 by governor La Ganesan.

Speaking to Nagaland Post, Rajkumar mentioned that the governor became the first person to plant trees online after launching the portal. “We are very happy with the progress because within a span of just 24 hours, we already had 91 buyers with 200 plants,” he said.

Rajkumar explained that coming from a small town of Tamil Nadu, he had always wanted to plant trees, but was unable to do so because of lack of space. He said he had seen many of his family members and friends living in the cities wanting to plant trees, but never had

the opportunity because of lack space.

So, when he was posted at Kohima, he stated that he had found an opportunity to make those dreams come true and came up with this plan of planting trees even if one was in the city.

The DFO said he had wanted to do something that would attract both locals and tourists. So, when he had convened a meeting of his team, he disclosed that they had come up with a mascot named ‘Nino’, a common name among Nagas used primarily to refer to little girls.

The story of Nino:

As per the narrative, Nino has been described as a little girl in traditional dress born at Touphema village. She is a young girl who grew up hearing the folk tales about forests and their relationship with humans from her grandparents. At school, she learned about climate change and its impact on humans.

These stories deeply impacted her life and her interest to plant trees began from a young age. Now, she maintains a nursery at her village and plants tree saplings along with her friends.

The DFO emphasised, “Each of us can bring about a change by

taking a small step of planting a tree today.”

The plantation will be done in Nagaland during the plantation season (April to June) by Ecotourism Management Committee formed as a society at Touphema village in which the chairman is from the village and member secretary is range forest officer.

The amount paid towards planting directly goes to the account of Ecotourism Management Committee, Touphema, which manages ecotourism activities and plantation with the revenue generated through this initiative.

WTC: Ind reach 151/5 at stumps on Day 2, trail Aus by 318 runs

LONDON, JUN 8 (PTI):

The failure of India’s famed top-order against a high-quality pace attack in a pressure game put Australia in firm control of the World Test Championship final here on Thursday.

Ravindra Jadeja (48 off 51 balls) and Ajinkya Rahane (29 batting off 71) offered hope to the partisan Indian supporters at The Oval with a 71-run stand off 100 balls before the former fell to Nathan Lyon 20 minutes before close of play. India were reeling at 151 for five at stumps in response to Australia’s first innings score of 469, trailing by 318 runs.

While the Indian bowlers failed to use the bouncer effectively on day one, the likes of Shubman Gill (13) and Cheteshwar Pujara (14) committed the cardinal sin of misjudging the line and length on a pitch with variable bounce.

Credit should also go to the relentless Australian pace trio of Mitchell Starc, Pat Cummins and Scott Boland, who got much more out of The Oval surface than their Indian counterparts.

Australia added 142 runs to their overnight total for the loss of seven wickets before being bowled out one hour into the afternoon session. Mohammed Siraj

cleaned up the tail and was the pick of India’s bowlers with four wickets. Leaving the ball is a key element of batting in English conditions and that is where Gill and Pujara were found wanting. The in-form Gill showed promise before he inexplicably decided to leave an incoming ball from Boland, leaving his stumps rattled. Pujara, who had the advantage of being in England well before his teammates arrived, offered no shot to a length ball from Cameron Green that cut in sharply from fourth stump.

French Open: Miyu Kato, Tim

The slide began with the fall of skipper Rohit Sharma (15) who missed an angled in ball from Cummins in the sixth over to be trapped lbw.

Indian superstar Virat Kohli (14) got a snorter from Mitchell Starc that he could not do much about, leaving India at 71 for four.

Rahane and Jadeja tried to hang in there but the Aussie pacers were constantly asking questions.

Rahane also had some luck going his way as he was adjudged lbw off a Cummins no ball when he was batting on 17. Jadeja

showed good intent with his innings comprising seven fours and a fine flick off Boland that went all the way for a six.

India were 37 for two in 10 overs at the tea break with the openers already back in the hut.

After the lunch break, Alex Carey pushed Australia past 450 with a 48 off 69 balls. His innings included a six off Jadeja but an attempted reverse sweep the following ball led to his downfall, trapping him in front of the stumps. India got themselves back in the game with four wickets in

the morning session but Australia maintained their upper hand by reaching 422 for seven at lunch, following Steve Smith’s 31st hundred.

Resuming the day on 327 for three, Travis Head (163 off 174) and Smith (121 off 268) walked into the middle under bright sunshine at The Oval.

Smith, who was on 95 overnight, got two freebies on the pads from Mohammed Siraj in the first over of the day and he happily put them away for consecutive boundaries to complete his seventh hundred in England and third at the venue.

India were guilty of not using the short ball tactic early enough on the opening day but Siraj went for that from the get on Thursday. Mohammed Shami too tried to mix it up with an odd bouncer but was not able to get the same zip from the surface as Siraj. While Smith was not bothered by India’s tactic, Head looked in a bit of discomfort.

Brief scores: Australia 1st innings: 469 all out in 121.3 overs (Travis Head 163, Steve Smith 121; Mohammed Siraj 2/122, Shardul Thakur 2/83).

India: 151/5 in 38 overs (Ajinkya Rahane 29 batting, Ravindra Jadeja 48; Nathan Lyon 1/4).

PARIS, JUNE 8 (IANS): Japan’s Miyu Kato and Germany’s Tim Puetz clinched the French Open mixed doubles title on Thursday, defeating Bianca Andreescu and Michael Venus 4-6, 6-4, [10-6] in the final, here.

The French Open is Kato’s first Grand Slam title and capped off an emotional week for the 28-year-old Japanese doubles specialist, who was disqualified from the women’s doubles competition after inadvertently hitting a ball girl with a ball in the thirdround match.

“It has been really challenging for me for the past few days. I want

to thank all the players, coaches, everyone for their heartfelt messages of support,” Kato was quoted as saying by WTA.

Andreescu and Venus climbed from a break down to take the opening set (4-6) but Kato and Puetz struck back to level the match, taking the second set 6-4.

The Japanese/German duo built a 6-3 lead in the tiebreak after Venus struck a double-fault down 4-3 and Kato followed with courageous work at the net to extend the lead.

Kato and Puetz rode their momentum to the win, sealing the match after Venus’ forehand fell into the net.

Special guest during the inaugural president, Nagaland Football Coaches Association (NFCA) and Sr VP, KDFA, Roko Angami said Nagaland was in dire need of licensed coaches to promote and enhance the sport. He observed that coaches have the ability to influence the play of sportspersons and therefore it was important for coaches to be trained with the right knowledge to produce good players.

He pointed out that there were only few qualified coaches in Nagaland unlike neighbouring states which have hundreds of qualified coaches.

He observed that among the student coaches attending the course were prominent and dedicated footballers.

Angami said ‘D’ licence was just an introductory course for recruitment tool to select promising future coaches for the AFC ‘C’ diploma licence coach. He pointed out that coaches at district level require ‘C’ license while for state level events, a minimum of ‘B’ license coaches were required.

Although the course was compressed into a 6-day schedule, he encouraged the

participants to do their best during the course. The current batch undergoing ‘D’ license coaching, will likely be the last as a new category ‘E’ license has been introduced as the base course, he disclosed.

He informed that after the completion of the course, student coaches would be eligible to become members of the Nagaland Football Coaches Association which currently has about 80 licensed coaches as members.

He also said the NFA under the leadership of president and executive member

AIFF, K Neibu Sekhose was coming up with the latest information for development of football in our State and at the same time he also thanked the NFA for giving permission to KDFA to host the course.

The inaugural was chaired by KDFA president Mathew Yhome.

BHUBANESWAR, JUNE 8 (IANS): A day ahead of their Intercontinental Cup 2023 campaign opener against Mongolia, India senior men’s national football team coach Igor Stimac on Thursday said that they are expecting to win the tournament and will do everything possible to make that happen. The third edition of the Intercontinental Cup will kick off with a clash between Lebanon and Vanuatu at 16:30 IST on Friday at the Kalinga Stadium, here. Later in the day, India will have their first-ever meeting against Mongolia.

Hosts India won the inaugural tournament in 2018 in Mumbai, defeating Kenya 2-0 in the final, while DPR Korea beat Tajikistan in the last edition in Ahmedabad in 2019. “We’re expecting to win the tournament, and that’s why we’re here. We’ll do everything possible to make that happen,” said Stimac in the pre-tournament press conference on Thursday. The big target for India is the AFC Asian Cup in Qatar in seven months’ time, and with the Blue Tigers set to play several matches until

the end of this year, Stimac believes every minute of every game will count for the team’s preparations. “Although our opponents (in the Intercontinental Cup) are not as tough as the teams we’ll face in the Asian Cup, they’re still good and competitive. Mongolia are a very aggressive side with a lot of young players in midfield and upfront. They press high press and play counter-attacking football. Even though they may find it difficult to adapt to the warm weather here, their players are arriving in competitive form as the Mongolian league is going on at the moment,” said Stimac, sharing his thoughts on India’s East Asian opponents. India have been in camp in Bhubaneswar since May 15, giving Stimac plenty of time to make a strong assessment of his squad.

EINDHOVEN, JUN 8 (PTI): A profligate India squandered a one-goal lead to go down 1-4 to the hosts Netherlands in the FIH Hockey Pro League here.

Skipper Harmanpreet Singh (11’) scored India’s lone goal despite the visitors being awarded as many as five penalty corners and a penalty stroke.

Pepijn Reyenga (17’), Boris Burkhardt (40’) and Duco Telgenkamp (41’, 58’) scored in the home team’s victory on Wednesday night.

Riding on back-to-back wins in London last weekend, India got off the blocks in Eindhoven establishing an early 1-0 lead in the first quarter. Though India took some time to shake off the nerves and settle into the game, they showed a good structure that helped them earn opportunities inside the Netherlands’ D.

India were awarded a penalty corner after a foot foul by the Netherlands defender in the 11th minute, a deliberate foul in PC defence saw them being

awarded a penalty stroke. The in-form Harmanpreet broke no sweat in converting the stroke, fetching India an early lead and also took his individual score to an impressive 17 goals this season.

Backed by a boisterous home crowd, the young Netherlands team bounced back in the second quarter with a fine equaliser through Pepijn Reyenga. He was skillful in his effort to pick up an aerial ball, and controlled it well enough to put it past the Indian defence in the 17th minute. The equaliser put India on the backfoot, with the hosts enjoying most of the ball possession. It took India a few minutes

to regain their rhythm and foray into the circle with a well-worked attack down the right flank but the hosts defended well to keep the scoreline even.

Only seconds before the hooter, the Netherlands found an opportunity to take the lead when they won a PC from a strong counterattack. But a goal was averted by India’s brave first rusher Amit Rohidas.

Starting the third quarter with a 1-1 stalemate, the match promised to keep the audience glued to their seats. The hosts dominated this quarter with improved ball possession backed by an aggressive attack.

Only minutes into the quarter, Tjep Hoedemakers tested India’s defence when he took a shot on goal from close range but India goalie Krishan Pathak was quick on his feet to make a fine save.

In the 35th minute, India created a good attack from the right flank with the ball being pushed across the face of the goal. Only a slight touch would have put the ball in, but Gurjant Singh’s diving effort went in vain. The deadlock finally ended in the 40th minute when the Netherlands managed a PC. Boris Burkhardt picked up a good injection to put it past Pathak. Seconds later, Duco Telgenkamp extended the lead to 3-1 with a well-timed field goal. It didn’t help that India were down to 10 men with Mandeep Singh being awarded a green card seconds before the Netherlands scored back-to-back goals. Under pressure to score, India began the final quarter with a couple of PCs coming their way but failed to make much of them.
