PM meets Shah, Nadda amid Cab reshuffle buzz NEW DELHI, JUN 11 (AGENCIES): A series of high-level meetings at the Prime Minister’s residence in recent days indicate that a union cabinet expansion or revamp may take place within this month. Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday held deliberations with Home Minister Amit Shah and BJP president J P Nadda amid speculation about a reshuffle in the Union cabinet, an exercise Modi has not undertaken since forming the government for a second time in May 2019. Modi has been silently working away for the past two months on this, say sources, while attending dozens of meetings on various aspects of containment and management of the second wave of Covid-19. There is also a growing buzz about the Cabinet expansion in Uttar Pradesh after Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath met the BJP top brass during his two-day visit to the national capital. Sources, said that Modi has been holding meetings with Union minsters and also at organisational levels in different batches of late, and Nadda has also been present there. Meetings with

ministers: With the threat of the second wave of Covid-19 slowly subsiding, Modi is now assessing the performance of his ministers. He has started meeting members of his cabinet in small groups. The practice started at the beginning of this week with a group of five ministers. All of them presented their report cards with a special focus on the future roadmap of their respective ministries. Sources said PM has made it clear that this entire year was lost due to the pandemic, so everyone must go out on the ground and fix the problems that exist. Vacancies in union cabinet: During the term of Modi government 2.0, a few key ministers and top leaders
of the BJP have died, while allies like the Shiv Sena and Akali Dal have separated from the NDA, creating more than two dozen vacancies. Some senior ministers were allotted extra portfolios and this has led to a few of them being overburdened, say sources. Many states are yet to be given proper representation according to their strength in the Lok Sabha. During the Modi government’s first term, the Prime Minister closely assessed everyone’s performance and the first expansion was done after a year of taking office. A total of three cabinet reshuffles took place. But this has not been the case in the second term. And one of the reasons has been the coronavirus pan-

demic. The expectation is that Modi may soon lessen the burden on ministers holding three to four portfolios, while some people could be dropped from the government based on their less-than-satisfactory performances. State polls next year: With Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Gujarat, Goa, Manipur, Punjab and Himachal Pradesh facing assembly polls next year, the BJP wants to add more votes to its kitty. The focus is on several castes and groups that have gone unrepresented or underrepresented in the union and state cabinets. So some faces from western UP, some unrepresented castes or groups, etc, are likely to be given prominent positions in Delhi and even in Uttar Pradesh. A series of meetings at the organisational levels, and UP chief minister Yogi Adityanath meeting the PM and home minister Amit Shah indicate that some new faces are likely to be inducted. This further adds fuel to the speculation that a cabinet expansion may take place soon. Many waiting to be absorbed: Ever since Congress
leader Jyotiraditya Scindia joined the BJP last year, helping reinstate the Shivraj Singh Chouhan government in Madhya Pradesh, there has been conjecture in the media and among observers about when, if at all, he will join the union cabinet. Former Assam chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal has made way for Himanta Biswa Sarma, in a peaceful transition of power, and he too appears to be waiting for a central posting. Giving allies representation: BJP’s alliance partner from Bihar, Janata Dal (United), wants its two MPs to be inducted as union ministers. But the ruling BJP has made it clear that it will be a cabinet post and another for a minister of state. The Modi government also wanted to include Andhra Pradesh’s ruling YSR Congress in the cabinet but it had indicated its disinclination so far. The Andhra party has bailed the BJP out many times in Parliament with its numbers. Chief minister YS Jaganmohan Reddy meeting Shah and others this week indicates that attempts may be on to give a fresh touch to the NDA cabinet.

Follow prescribed guidelines while reporting Covid data: Centre to states NEW DELHI, JUN 11 (PTI): The Health ministry on Friday said it has regularly emphasised on the need for a robust reporting mechanism to monitor district-wise Covid cases and deaths on a daily basis, two days after Bihar revised its Covid-19 death toll by including 3,951 unreported fatalities. The Covid-19 death toll in Bihar was on Wednesday revised drastically upwards by the state health depart-
ment which put the total number of fatalities caused by the pandemic at 9,429. In a statement, the ministry said states and Union territories have been advised to report Covid deaths in accordance with the prescribed guidelines. This spike in deaths was on account of the 3,971 fatalities reported in Bihar after data reconciliation by the state government, the ministry said. “States and UTs have
been advised repeatedly through formal communications, multiple video conferences and through deployment of Central teams for recording of deaths in accordance with laid down guidelines,” the ministry said. The Union government has written to Bihar to provide a detailed date and district wise break-up of the reconciled number of deaths to the health ministry.
ICMR to start national sero surveys to assess Covid spread
T
he ICMR will start national-level sero surveys to assess the spread of Covid-19 and all states as well as Union Territories should also be encouraged to conduct them so that information from all geographies can be collected, the Union health ministry said on Friday. The ministry also said that thought the country’s coronavirus situation appears to be stabilising, people to continue following the appropriate behaviour and social distancing norms. The Ministry on Friday said there has been 8% decline in daily cases since highest peak reported on May 7. The ministry, in its press briefing, also mentioned that the weekly Covid-19 positivity rate has declined by 74% since the highest such rate was reported at 21.6% between April
30-May 6. The US’ Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on Friday rejected emergency use authorisation for Bharat Biotech’s Covaxin vaccine, instead recommending that the vaccine manufacturer’s US partner apply for biologics licence application (BLA), PTI reported. BLA is a “full approval” mechanism by the FDA for drugs and vaccines. India reported 91,702 new coronavirus cases in the last 24 hours, with which the country’s caseload rose to over 2.9 crore. The death toll surged to more than 3.7 lakh after 3,403 Covid-related deaths were recorded on Thursday. Tamil Nadu remains the highest contributor with 16,813 cases. Active cases have dropped further to 11.21 lakh.

DIMAPUR, JUN 11 (NPN): Appalled at the continued negligence of telecom service providers in improving network connectivity in the State despite having raised the issue on multiple occasions, thereby wilfully putting the future of student community at stake, Naga Students’ Federation (NSF) has threatened to take up “necessary measures” in the interests of students. While poor connectivity has adversely affected all sections of people in their day-to-day activities, besides banks, businesses and other establishments that rely on internet connectivity, NSF
vice-president and public grievances redressal cell convener Atokiho Sumi and education secretary and public grievances redressal cell co-convener Medovi Rhi in a press release said students and teaching fraternity have been affected the most due to the “sheer negligence and questionable business ethics” of the telecom service providers. Amid Covid-19 pandemic and introduction of online classes, webinars and teleconferencing as means to adapt to the challenges, they pointed out that poor internet connectivity has brought much hardships
and untold miseries upon the general populace as they were being robbed of their paid services. They said the federation has taken a strong note of the numerous complaints from distraught students, aggrieved parents and concerned citizens alike. Highlighting the plight of the student community, NSF appealed to the telecom service providers to immediately rectify the problem by providing quality network coverage and uninterrupted internet connectivity in all areas of operation in the State and expedite the process (Cont’d on p-8)
FA isn’t diluted, says NSCN (I-M)
DIMAPUR, JUN 11 (NPN): Reacting to the formation of the Core Committee of Parliamentary Committee on Naga Political issue by the state government, NSCN (I-M) said it welcomed such a Committee provided only if there was no attempt to dilute the spirit and substance of Framework Agreement (FA) as mutually agreed upon by it with both Government of India (GoI),as the final basis for Naga political solution. In a statement issued through its MIP, NSCN (I-M) reiterated that the much-talked-about FA was not something signed in a hurry but the result of a well thought-out proposal from the government of India. It said when the “IndoNaga political talks” faced deadlock-like situation as Indian and Naga leaders took their respective stands with no meeting point when talks touched the core issue of solution within Indian constitution (Indian stand) and outside the Indian constitution (Naga stand). NSCN (I-M) said Framework Agreement was the result of going through a long series of talks “when the Government of India
finally proposed the Framework Agreement as a formula of win-win solution.” NSCN (I-M) said the talks had revolved around FA with both parties cautiously taking care not to allow either side to take strategic advantage or deviation from it. NSCN (I-M) however said the “foot-in-mouth syndrome” prevalent with the state BJP unit was already giving the Core Committee a bad name even before it began work. While maintaining that no effort by any committee would bear fruits if the historical account of Nagas was not taken into consideration; NSCN (I-M) demanded that if the BJP wanted to solve the Naga political issue within the ambit of the Indian constitution then, the party has to first make its stand clear on whether it took cognisance of the Naga national movement with reference to the declaration of Naga independence on August 14,1947 and Naga Plebiscite on May 16,1951. NSCN (I-M) said the two events constituted the most important landmarks in the Naga national movement and it is with the UNO.

Further, it said Nagas had undergone horrendous violations of human rights never seen anywhere in the world at the hands of Indian security forces. NSCN (I-M) said more than two lakh Nagas lost their lives and properties were destroyed by the security forces throughout Nagalim. NSCN (I-M) therefore, insisted that BJP make its stand “very clear” either to admit these factual accounts of history or deny it. It said the sufferings of Nagas at the hands of “Indian occupational forces” were well documented for posterity to judge. NSCN (I-M) said “Indo-Naga political history” was marked by “bloody blunder” when the “main stakeholders” (freedom fighters) were not consulted. It therefore, urged the Core Committee members to not overrate themselves or outdo their role at the cost of destroying Naga political identity which itNSCN (I-M)- had “robustly protected” throughout the two decades of talks with the government of India and not to repeat the same mistakes of the past. Cong slams Himanta for population control remarks Guwahati, JUN 11 (IANS): The opposition Congress in Assam on Friday slammed Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma for his remarks on controlling the population of the northeastern state. While addressing the media on Thursday, Sarma said that the immigrant Muslim population must adopt decent family planning norms as land and resources are limited. “If the population is not controlled then various problems and crimes would come up jeopardising the future of the new generations,” he added. In response, Assam Congress’ Media Department Chairperson Bobbeeta Sharma said that the Chief Minister’s statement in the context about population ‘explosion’ in Assam is “misinformed and misleading”. She said that as per the latest National Family Health Survey (NFHS) undertaken
Himanta Biswa Sarma
by the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare and released in December 2020, the Total Fertility Rate (TFR) across most Indian states have declined in the last five years. “The total fertility rate is defined as the average number of children that would be born to a woman by the time she ends childbearing. A TFR of 2.1 is known as the replacement rate. Fertility rate of less than 2.1 implies that the total population will be less than the existing population which is also called the negative growth rate,” Sharma said. She said that
as per the same survey above the fertility rate of women in Assam has declined from 2.2 in 2015-16 to 1.9 in 2020-21 and 1.9 is less than 2.1 which means the future population of Assam will only be less than the current population. “Hence there is no question of an increase in population as per the Ministry’s data.” The Congress leader said that if the Chief Minister is referring to the “population explosion” that may happen in future due to immigration of people from Bangladesh and Pakistan because of the implementation of the Citizenship (Amendment) Act then perhaps his concern is valid. “We at the Congress party take this opportunity to assure the Chief Minister that we will take definite steps and do our best to save Kamakhya temple and his house from such encroachment.

every member of the community and will go a long way in effectively managing the states response to COVID-19, she said. Thane: Manipur girl Resettlement of Mizoram tribals in Tripura jolted as NGT accepts complain killed grappling thieves AGARTALA, JUN 11 (IANS): The plan to rehabilitate 36,140 tribal migrants, who had fled Mizoram 24 years ago, following ethnic strife, received a jolt after the National Green Tribunal (NGT) accepted a complaint filed against their resettlement in Tripura’s forest areas. The Centre and the Tripura government have undertaken a Rs 1,200 crore ambitious project to rehabilitate 36,140 tribal immigrants in 13 locations across different districts of Tripura. Environmentalists, experts and Dhanishwar Debnath, who filed the petition in the NGT, have been saying that they are not against the rehabilitation of the tribal migrants but they are against deforestation and adverse effect on forest and environment. The NGT has sought replies from the Forest department and North Tripura district administration on a complaint filed by Debnath that the migrant tribals from adjoining Mizoram were being resettled in forest land of Tripura. The Kolkata-based eastern zonal bench of the NGT directed the Principal Secretary of Tripura’s Forest Department, the District Magistrate of North Tripura district and other officials to submit a report on the reha-
bilitation plan by July 14. Debnath, General Secretary of a local club, in his petition referred to an etender floated by the Tripura government on November 4, 2020, seeking “certain constructions within a forest area” in North Tripura district. He said that according to the Forest Conservation Act of 1980, if certain areas were deforested, the concerned authorities must have afforested those areas by new plantations but there is no such additional lands in most districts for the fresh plantations. Principal Chief Conservator of Forests Dvijendra Kumar Sharma while talking to IANS said that they are aware about the order of the NGT and they would respond in due course of time. Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb, who recently visited Dhalai district to supervise the arrangements of the resettlement of the tribal migrants, had said that the Tripura government has selected 13 locations in different districts to rehabilitate the internally displaced Reang tribes, locally called “Bru”. “Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah have taken bold steps to resolve the 24-year-old ethnic
crisis of the Reang tribes,” said the Chief Minister. He said that the Prime Minister has already announced a Rs 600 crore package for the resettlement of these tribal migrants in Tripura. According to the agreement signed in January last year by the Chief Secretaries of Mizoram, Tripura, Union Ministry of Home Affairs Joint Secretary Satyendra Garg and the representatives of the refugees in the presence of Home Minister Amit Shah, 36,140 tribals from around 5,400 families of the Reang tribal community would be resettled in different districts of Tripura. Since October 1997, the Reang tribals have been sheltered in northern Tripura’s seven relief camps in Kanchanpur and Panisagar sub-divisions. The resettlement of the first batch of around 890 Reang tribals had started on April 19, more than 15 months after a four-partite agreement was signed in Delhi. Dhalai District Magistrate and Collector Govekar Mayur Ratilal said that the tribals would now temporarily stay in the newly built makeshift houses in Ambassa and Longtharai Valley sub-divisions before their permanent resettlement.

Kolkata, Jun 11 (PTI): In a blow to the prestige of the saffron brigade, Bharatiya Janata Partys national Vice President Mukul Roy along with son Subranshu, re-joined the Trinamool Congress on Friday, with Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and other leaders of the state’s ruling party welcoming him back to the fold. Roy, who was closeted with Banerjee in Trinamool Bhavan before his formal re-induction in the party he helped set up, said he was “happy to see all known faces again”. Addressing a press meet after the re-joining ceremony, Banerjee said Roy was threatened and tortured in the BJP, and that, in turn, affected his health. “Mukul’s return proves that the BJP does not let anyone live in peace and put’s undue pressure on everyone,” the chief minister said. Roy was seated on Banerjees left hand, with Abhishek seated after him, while Partha Chatterjee, another top
Ever since the new administrator took charge, the Congress and the ruling Left, here have been up in arms and have alleged that Patel is trying to implement the Sangh parivar agenda in the otherwise calm and peace loving island. The Kerala Assembly earlier this month also saw an unanimous resolution being passed in the demanding the removal of Patel. Just the other day the island administrators following a protest was forced to withdraw an order which said that in all the fishing boats that venture out for fishing in the island will have a security official. On Monday, the entire island was on a day long hunger strike by remaining in their homes and was fasting demanding the removal of Patel.
Delhi govt under control Could have procured vax with of ‘ration mafia’: BJP taxes collected on fuel: Priyanka NEW DELHI, JUN 11 (PTI): The BJP on Friday alleged that Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal-led Delhi government is under the control of “ration mafia” and claimed that its proposal of home delivery of subsidised grains is merely a show to promote a “scam”. Addressing a press conference, Union minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said the Kejriwal government cannot violate the Food Security Act, and fair price ration shops are at its core for the supply of subsidised grains to the poor as they are covered under the law’s provisions and are accountable for any lapse. If grains are home-delivered, people will not get to know how much of it is going where and how much of it might have disappeared on the way, he said, while attacking the Delhi government for not implementing the “One nation one ration card” scheme and not connecting its ration shops with electronic point of sale (EPOS) machine to “evade” accountability. “Grains at doorstep is very much a ‘jumla’ (rhetoric). The Delhi government is under the control of ration mafia,” Prasad alleged. “You want to break the law. You want to throw dust into the eyes of the people of Delhi. The central government procures and spends money on the scheme and you have to follow the law,” he said. With Kejriwal targeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led central government for not approving his dispensation’s home delivery scheme, the senior BJP leader said the chief minister is free to launch a separate scheme outside the Food Security Act-covered programme. Prasad noted that the Centre provides 37,573 tonnes subsidised grains to 73 lakh people in Delhi at the cost of Rs 1,163 crore, asserting that the interest of Delhi is very much its interest as well. The central government is annually spending Rs 2 lakh crore to give subsidised ration to people, he said. Taking a swipe at the Aam Aadmi Party leader, he said the Delhi government could not deliver medicine and oxygen to people at home but it is now talking about delivering grains at home. To help migrant population receive their quota of ration at their place of work, the central government launched “one nation one ration card” scheme but Delhi is among the three states which has not implemented it.
Priyanka Gandhi Vadra NEW DELHI, JUN 11 (PTI): Attacking the Centre, Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Friday said a lot could have been done, including procuring vaccines for all, with the money collected in taxes on petrol and diesel during the COVID-19 pandemic, but nothing was done.

Yadav also accused the state government of fudging the Covid figures. Calling the BJP’s ‘Sankalp Patra’ during 2017 polls a bundle of lies, he said, “The truth is that there was record unemployment in the BJP rule and inflation is high. Prices of petrol-diesel-cooking gas are touching the sky, neither is there work in MNREGA, nor there is trace of skill mapping. Trade, business, small-medium industries are getting ruined.”

Sedition charges against Lakshadweep filmmaker Ayesha Sulthana
KOCHI, JUN 11 (IANS): The Kavaratti Police has served a notice to leading Lakshadweep film personality Ayesha Sulthana to appear before it on June 20, in connection with her remarks made on a Malayalam TV channel about the spread of Covid in the island. This unfolds amid the already prevailing local sentiments against the new Lakshadweep administrator Praful Khoda Patel. The notice that has been served on Sulthana by Sub Inspector Ameer Bin Mohammed contains charges under 124 A and 153 B of the CrPC, both of which are non-bailable offences. The complaint was registered by Lakshadweep BJP’s unit president Abdul Khader following the TV channel debate on June 7,

for the people from the BJP government which is engaged in ‘bandar baant’,” he said in a statement issued here in Hindi. ‘Bandar baant’ refers to a story in which a monkey grabs an entire ‘roti’ on the pretext of dividing it between two cats. Due to not taking effective steps timely, failure in proper assessment of situations and wrong management, figures show that Uttar Pradesh is lagging behind in COVID-19 vaccination, he said.
Congress leaders and party workers on Friday held symbolic protests at petrol pumps in several parts of the city, demanding a complete rollback of fuel price hike. In a tweet, Priyanka Gandhi said, “During the pandemic, Modi government collected taxes on petrol-diesel: Rs 2.74 lakh crore.” “What all could have been done with this money: Vaccines for the whole country (Rs 67,000 crore)+ oxygen plants in 718 districts+ AIIMS hospital in 29 states + Rs 6,000 as help to 25 crore poor people. But nothing was done,” the Congress general secretary tweeted in Hindi using the hashtag ‘BJPLootingIndia’.

Mukul Roy TMC leader sat on her right, indicative according to TMC sources, of the partys future pecking order. Speculation had been rife for some time on a possible home coming by Mukul Roy who had crossed over to BJP in 2017 after being charged in the Narada tape sting, ever since Banerjees nephew Abhishek visited his wife at a city hospital earlier this month. Prime Minister Narendra Modi had promptly after Abhisheks visit, rung up to enquire about Roy’s wife’s
health, seen by political observers as an attempt to retain him within the BJP-fold. Interestingly, at Fridays rejoining ceremony, both Banerjee and Roy claimed that they never had any differences. The chief minister said we will consider the case of those who had left TMC with Mukul for BJP and want to come back. A signal that this may be the start of more defections from BJPs Bengal unit. However, Banerjee clarified that TMC politicians and workers who left to join the BJP just ahead of the April-May assembly elections will not be taken back. Roy, once the second-incommand of the TMC, was removed from the post of the party’s national general secretary in February, 2015, sometime after the Narada sting was carried out by investigative journalists where many politicians were allegedly caught accepting wads of cash from a fictitious company. He joined the BJP in November, 2017.
T H I R U V ANAN THAPURAM, JUN 11 (PTI): A centenarian woman has beaten COVID-19 in 11 days and left hospital in northern Kannur district of Kerala, infusing a fresh vigour to the overworked health fraternity in the state which is striving to contain the infection. She was rushed to the medical college ICU from the dedicated COVID care centre at Taliparamba, where she was admitted earlier, following a drastic dip in the oxygen level. Ja n a k i A m m a ’s daughter-in-law and her mother are still under treatment for the virus infection. Pa r i ya r a m M e d i cal College principal-incharge, Dr S Ajith and other hospital staff wished her all the best when the centenarian left the hospital on Friday, a health department statement said. Abuse of archaic law
G
oing by the all too frequent reports of sedition cases being filed by the government against scores of people, it indicates that India is under threat from secessionists. A new database launched by Article 14 in February 2021 showed that 96% of the sedition cases filed against 405 Indians for criticising political leaders and governments over the last decade were registered after the Narendra Modi government first came to power in 2014. The report revealed, that of these, 149 people were accused of making “critical” or “derogatory” remarks against Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and 144 against Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Adityanath.Section 124A of the Indian Penal Code or the draconian sedition law has always been contentious which for long, was employed by the colonial rulers to imprison freedom fighters including Mahatma Gandhi. The same law under IPC, like its equivalent in other former Britishruled countries, offers a legal framework to categorize a citizen(especially of a colonial state) as a threat to the state( the British colonial empire). Globally, it is increasingly viewed as a draconian law and most significantly, was revoked in the United Kingdom in 2010, from where it was birthed. In the present day independent and democratic India, people are being arrested for voicing out their opinion as part of their fundamental rights. The fundamental right encased in article 19(1)(a) of the Indian Constitution guarantees all its citizens their right to freedom of speech and expression. Sedition laws are not only discriminatory but also against the very spirt of the Indian constitution where justice and equality are supreme. There are many cases where critics of the government, have been charged with sedition, some under specious pretexts. A case in point is that of Aisha Sultana, a film actress and film director of Lakshadweep, who was booked for sedition for alleging, during a TV debate, that the central government used biological weapons to spread Covid-19. What Sultana was emphasising was that till 2020, Lakshadweep had ‘nil’ Covid cases. But from January 18,2021 when the first Covid case was recorded, it has now spiralled to over 7000 cases. This was mainly after Patel did away with the strict Covid protocols that were in place in Lakshadweep. The Union Territory is experiencing not only the onslaught from Covid but also a turmoil after Praful Khoda Patel took over as the Administrator on December 5,2020. Patel was home minister in Gujarat under Modi in 2010 and has become so controversial that even several BJP legislators of the Union Territory, have demanded his recall. Many of those charged with sedition cases, suffer similar fates as those booked under NIA, AFSPA or even NSA with the onus of proving their own innocence. If there is to be some justice even with the misuse of the archaic, draconian and anti-human rights law, people who are destroying societies, trampling over their constitutional rights and even causing harm on the law abiding citizens should also be booked under this black law. The courts are called upon to ensure that the almost regular use of black laws to victimise citizens for voicing out differences and exercising their freedom of speech or using CBI and ED to arm twist political opponents or critics is not part of Indian democracy.
DailyDevotion Getting There (1)
Come to Me… —Matthew 11:28 Where sin and sorrow stops, and the song of the saint starts. Do I really want to get there? I can right now. The questions that truly matter in life are remarkably few, and they are all answered by these words— “Come to Me.” Our Lord’s words are not, “Do this, or don’t do that,” but— “Come to me.” If I will simply come to Jesus, my real life will be brought into harmony with my real desires. I will actually cease from sin, and will find the song of the Lord beginning in my life. Have you ever come to Jesus? Look at the stubbornness of your heart. You would rather do anything than this one simple childlike thing— “Come to Me.” If you really want to experience ceasing from sin, you must come to Jesus. Jesus Christ makes Himself the test to determine your genuineness. Look how He used the word come. At the most unexpected moments in your life there is this whisper of the Lord— “Come to Me,” and you are immediately drawn to Him. Personal contact with Jesus changes everything. Be “foolish” enough to come and commit yourself to what He says. The attitude necessary for you to come to Him is one where your will has made the determination to let go of everything and deliberately commit it all to Him. “…and I will give you rest”— that is, “I will sustain you, causing you to stand firm.” He is not saying, “I will put you to bed, hold your hand, and sing you to sleep.” But, in essence, He is saying, “I will get you out of bed— out of your listlessness and exhaustion, and out of your condition of being half dead while you are still alive. I will penetrate you with the spirit of life, and you will be sustained by the perfection of vital activity.” Yet we become so weak and pitiful and talk about “suffering” the will of the Lord! Where is the majestic vitality and the power of the Son of God in that?

face behind the mask: the domestic workers condition today
L
ooking deep in to the problems of the Domestic Workers, their unseen struggles and problems stand out like “face behind the mask” of today. They contribute a lot to the household and the society, but who recognises them? Hardly a few good souls. They are still unrecognised. It was on 16th of June 2011, exactly 10 years ago the ILO convention adopted the policy wherein the workers, employers and governments came together to adopt ILO Convention vide, ILO C -189, ON “DECENT WORK FOR DOMESTIC WORKERS”. Since then, many countries around the world have implemented the policy with ‘decent work for domestic workers’. These measures represent the first steps in a long path to redress a history of exclusion; making decent work a reality for domestic workers who require the sustained attention to ensure real progress. It is estimated that there are over four million domestic workers in India. They remain part of an informal and unregulated sector, obscured in private homes, not recognised as
workers but rather as ‘informal help’. They receive a meagre or low wages, extra and long working hours, they get no holidays, no welfare facilities or social security measures, constant harassment, sexual exploitation, physical torture, ill treatment, no entitlement for rest even at the event of developing fatigue, no freedom, frequent false accusations and suspicions. These are the problems faced and expressed by many of the domestic workers. And now after the outbreak of COVID-19 Pandemic, their lives were made all the more miserable. With the wake of pandemic resulting in prolonged lockdown, they to face the problems like Job loss, pay cuts, lack of transport and social boycott. If we look at their home conditions they faced with multiple problems like, payment of the house rent, children’s school fees, daily bread, no job, even the spouse at home without work. Like never before, the corona virus crisis has made their works undervalued and without any protection. As their employers take steps to practice social distancing, many domestic
workers have been left without work and without any guarantee that they would get their jobs back. At the same time, many domestic workers play the role of front line warriors of the pandemic - caring for the sick, keeping homes clean, caring for children and helping households stay clean, all without proper protective equipments. In addition to this, they face low pay, rarely receive benefits, and have less access to full-time work than other because they work in private homes. They are outside of public view and isolated from other workers, leaving them particularly vulnerable to exploitation. Domestic workers have been among the least protected workers worldwide. Labour laws in many countries either do not recognise domestic workers as workers entitled to labour rights or if they do, they exclude them from key protection including limits on hours of work and social protection coverage. The government needs to strengthen legal protections to ensure their lives’ security. Domestic workers had high hopes for ILO C 189, but unfortunately it remained as a distant
dream for the domestic workers here in India. The Convention requires member states to take legal, policy and other measures to protect domestic workers. It should extend basic rights to domestic workers, including workplace safety, health and social protection and protection against discrimination and forced labour. It also requires states to legislate certain laws that would ensure and provide domestic workers with employment contracts and protection to migrant workers by their employers. Millions of women and girls around are employed as domestic workers in private houses and homes. They clean, cook, take care of the children, look after the elderly and the sick, and perform other essential tasks for their employers. Despite of such important role they play in bettering the life and families, they are among the most exploited and abused workers. The domestic workers work 14-18 hours a day, seven days in a week, for wages far below the minimum wage. This is their lot; this is their life. Who cares for them? The government? The indi-
vidual employers? We need to give a thought. When we see, hear, read and witness the problems faced by the domestic workers and the recognition that we give; the convention ILO - C 189 ‘decent work for domestic workers’ remain only in the paper. Can we think a wild thought keeping in mind the current situations as to whether the employers insisted the domestic workers to vaccinate themselves. At the backdrop of this prevailing situation and the plight of the domestic works, I, as the coordinator of the National domestic welfare trust - Nagaland Region humbly request every one concern be it institutions or individual families; Please tell your domestic workers to vaccinate themselves, treat them with much love and respect, understand their feelings and their problems. Behind the mask your unarmed domestic workers, there is a sea of tears flowing down due to their innumerable problems and difficulties. Their silent do no mean their problem free life. Do not forget that after resolving the problems of every little daily chores of your house/
institute, she has mountain of her own problems – economic, health, relationship, emotional and spiritual. Be good to them, be kind to her families, be just in paying her. As we commemorate International Domestic Workers day on June 16th, let us recognise their contribution to the individual, family, society and the Nation. Only when every employers begin to think and feel that “my domestic workers is also is a worker, her work I need to recognise”, then only we are able to bring a change from the corner of the world and make our domestic workers to work with dignity and respect by recognising her contribution and helping her to have her rights. Domestic worker who is like face behind the mask works between the four walls to make everyone’s life comfortable. Then why delay to recognise them? Do we need another 10 years to “Recognise Domestic Workers as Workers, and Domestic Work is Work” Sr. Pramila UFS NDWWT-Nagaland Region Assisi Center for Integrated Development
Act now: end child labour! Covid-19 and the invisibilisation of rural India 12th June is World Day Against Child Labour
A
ll children have rights to get education and other rights like any other citizen. In spite of having children’s rights many are deprived of those rights. One of the worst forms of violation of child rights is none other than child labour. We need to understand child labour and other activities carried out by children. Not all work done by children should be classified as child labour that is to be targeted for elimination. Children’s or adolescents’ participation in work that does not affect their health and personal development or interfere with their schooling is generally regarded as being something positive. Some of the positive activities like helping parents or assisting in family business help children to prepare for their future with a lot of skills. Child labour is work carried out to the harm and endangerment of a child, in violation of international law and national legislation. There is no doubt that this deprives them of their basic rights. We can still see children on roads instead of schools and this can be seen in both rural and urban areas. There are worse forms where a child is separated from their family and exposed to hazards and illness. Though the number of children in child labour has declined by 94 million since 2000, the rate of reduction slowed by two-thirds in recent years but it is still in existence in spite of effort by different governments and other agencies. We should know that the target 8.7 of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) calls for an end to child labour in all its forms by 2025. One of the major aims set for the International Labour Organization (ILO) at its founding in 1919 was the abolition of child labour. The ILO’s adoption of Convention No. 182 in 1999 consolidated the global consensus on child labour elimination. Africa ranks highest among regions both in the percentage of children in child labour — one-fifth — and the absolute number of children in child labour — 72 million. Asia and the Pacific ranks second highest in both these measures — 7% of all children and 62 million in absolute terms are in child labour in this region. The Africa and the Asia and the Pacific regions together account for almost nine out of every ten children in child labour worldwide. The remaining child labour population is divided among the Americas (11 million), Europe and Central Asia (6 million), and the Arab States (1 million). In terms of incidence, 5% of children are in child labour in the Americas, 4% in Europe and Central Asia, and 3% in the Arab States. The ILO launched the World Day Against Child Labour in 2002 to
focus attention on the global extent of child labour and the action and efforts needed to eliminate it. The day is observed on 12th June with different themes around the world. This year’s celebration focuses on action taken for the 2021 International Year for the Elimination of Child Labour. It is the first World Day since the universal ratification of the ILO’s Convention No. 182 on the Worst Forms of Child Labour, and takes place at time when the COVID-19 crisis threatens to reverse years of progress in tackling the problem. In July 2019, the General Assembly of United Nations unanimously adopted a resolution declaring 2021 as the International Year for the Elimination of Child Labour, and has asked the International Labour Organization to take the lead in its implementation. This brings more opportunity to address the issue and raise concerns globally. Past Themes 2020: COVID-19: Protect Children from Child Labour, now more than ever! 2019: Children shouldn’t work in fields, but on dreams! 2018: Generation Safe & Healthy 2017: In conflicts and disasters, protect children from child labour 2016: End child labour in supply chains - It’s everyone’s business! 2015: NO to child labour – YES to quality education! We should not forget that the number of children in child labour has risen to 160 million worldwide – an increase of 8.4 million children in the last four years. The agriculture sector accounts for 70% of children in child labour, followed by 20% in services and 10% in industry. The key challenge for us and everyone is to end child labour at any cost. It requires immediate action, accelerated motivation, and collaborative partnerships at all levels – now. Together we can make a difference. There are many nongovernmental organizations apart from government agencies working against child labour. The participation of each and everyone is required if we wish to make child labour a history. Ending child labour is a challenge but not impossible for us. The recent COVID crisis has bought economic challenges for many families in the country and we must be vigilant and make sure that this does not encourage child labour. All of us have a role to play and let us all act passively to end child labour from our society and from the world. A
s the government declares the worst of the second wave of the pandemic over in our cities and gets ready to unlock, in our villages, our citizens have been dying. And they have been dying uncounted, and mostly at home, from illnesses that match the exact symptoms of Covid-19, including plummeting oxygen levels. On the ground, in every hamlet, even the smallest ones across states, residents say, anywhere between 20-40 deaths have taken place in May. Though rural health care infrastructure in our southern states is distinctly better than in the north, the struggle for testing and vaccines is exactly the same in large swathes of rural India, irrespective of geography. In Tamil Nadu’s Chennasandiram panchayat of seven villages, the panchayat president Jayakumar Reddy tells me that the surge in sudden deaths in the last two months has made people even more terrified to make the trek to nearby towns and cities — the only places where they have a hope of getting a vaccine. Among the dead is 27year-old Vijay, who was discharged from a private hospital and told he was well enough to go home, only to die the next morning, eight hours later. We also meet Shobha, the sister of Rudresh, a young man who travelled from Bengaluru to Hosur in the hope of finding a hospital closer to his home. He ended up riding in an ambulance for 250 kilometres before dying in the vehicle, unable to find an oxygenated intensive care unit (ICU) bed. “No one cares about the poor,” his sister says, barely able to form the words through a cascade of tears.
“We want vaccines,” implores Reddy. “We are all farmers. As poor people, are we going to be completely overlooked?” he asks. The invisibilisation of rural India is the stage of the pandemic we are now at, relegated to the margins of public and policy discourse and attention. Tragedies abound in our villages where hardly anyone is chronicling them. Not only are their deaths slipping through the official cracks — of deep concern in a week that saw Bihar reconcile its death data in thousands, causing India to breach the 6,000 mark for daily fatalities — the absence of vaccines and testing also means we may not be measuring the trajectory of the second wave accurately. The crests and troughs in Covid-19 cases and the spikes and falls of daily infographics by which we now measure the wellness of our lives have been based mostly on city-driven data. Reddy reports 20 confirmed Covid deaths in the villages under him in Hosur. He does not think most of them have been certified. Hundreds of miles away in Ramana village in Varanasi, Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s constituency, the village pradhan (headman) reports twice as many deaths, 40 in the last few weeks. Ram Gopal, who lost two family members, an uncle and a grandfather, shows us all the related medical paperwork. In one case, no death certificate has been provided. In another “typical pneumonia”, and not Covid-19, is listed as the reason for the fatality. In UP’s Kannauj, at the cremation ground, residents say four or five hearses have
left their villages every day in the past few weeks. The ethical issue with these deaths remaining uncounted and unrecognised is obvious. But from the perspective of framing public policy too, there is a real conundrum. If sickness and death in India’s villages remain on the margins of public and media attention, do we really know for sure if cases are coming down? Is the decision to ease restrictions based on data that is entirely city-centric? And once movement between villages and cities resumes, isn’t there a real danger that the virus will also travel up and down, undetected? In the north especially, primary health care centres (PHCs) I have reported from have been mostly locked or abandoned. Forget Covid vaccines or RT-PCR testing kits, these PHCs don’t even have doctors. In 2020 we saw the poorest Indian citizen suffer as migrant workers, in the hundreds of thousands, fled the cities on foot, sometimes barefoot, to return to the villages. In 2021, the virus came home for the wealthy and upper-middle-class Indians. Of course, low-income households suffered the most, financial penury compounding their grief and loss. But as the situation in the metropolises slowly comes under tenuous control, the Delta variant’s damage has once again exposed the great class divide of the virus and our response to it. Reader’s Post Sir,
Poor Internet connectivity
With the transition of the conventional classroom teaching to the online mode of learning, the students in Jalukie has been facing many inconveniences due to network inconsistency and poor internet connectivity. In times like this when a stable network with fast internet connectivity is a requirement for the students and teachers alike to keep up with their prescribed syllabi, the network provided is nowhere near effective. Given that online classes are mostly video based content, and the inability to download study materials, attend online classes, and failing to appear online exams has created a degree of inconveniences for the students both academically and mentally. Therefore, the JSUN urges the concerned authorities of Bharti Airtel and Reliance Jio to address the issue with immediate effect. Sena mocks BJP over induction of Jitin Prasada Mumbai, Jun 11 (PTI): The Shiv Sena on Friday described as ‘’hilarious” the BJP’s celebration over the induction of Uttar Pradesh leader Jitin Prasada into the party fold, but also said that Congress leader Rahul Gandhi will have to create a strong team in his party. In a shot in the arm for the BJP, Prasada, a Congress leader joined the saffron party on Wednesday, months ahead of the Assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh scheduled for early next year. The 47year former Union minister comes from a wellknown Brahmin family of UP. In an editorial in party mouthpiece ‘Saamana’, the Shiv Sena said Prasada, a young leader, was of no use to the Congress and will remain so to the BJP. “Jitin Prasada, Jyotiraditya Scindia, Sachin pilot were young leaders and there were high expec-

tations from them. There is already a vacuum in the Congress after the death of Ahmed Patel and Rajeev Satav. It is not good that young leaders are going the BJP way,” the Sena said. “Prasada, who had faced defeat in Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections, has finally joined the BJP. Prasada’s family members were Congress loyalists. He was a minister in former prime minister Manmohan Singh’s
GDP crashing and BJP looting India: Rahul Gandhi
Rahul Gandhi
New Delhi, Jun 11 (IANS) : On the day when the Congress is protesting against fuel price hike across the country, former party president Rahul Gandhi attacked the government for looting the country. In a tweet on Friday he said, “GDP crashing, Unemployment soaring, Fuel prices skyrocketing. In how many more ways is #BJPLootingIndia?” Hundreds of Congress
workers on Friday staged protests at several petrol pumps across the national capital over the increase in the prices of petrol and diesel. Several senior Congress leaders including KC Venugopal, former Union Minister Ajay Maken, Delhi Congress chief Chaudhary Anil Kumar participated in the protest at several locations. Speaking to the media, Venugopal who is Congress general secretary (organisation) said, “When the UPA government was in power, tax on petrol and diesel was Rs 9.20.” “Now it is Rs 32 and we demand the government to rollback the excise duty hike on petrol-diesel,” he said. He said that fuel should come under the purview of GST.
cabinet. However, he kept losing Assembly and Lok Sabha elections. The BJP has now started celebrating his induction into the party fold. The caste politics of Uttar Pradesh is behind it. Eye on UP’s Brahmin vote bank is being said to be behind Prasada’s induction into the BJP,” it said. “But if Prasada had a hold over the Brahmin votes, why these votes weren’t transferred to the Congress?” it asked. The Sena said that
BJP’s traditional upper caste vote must be drifting away from the party. “Till now, the BJP did not require any arithmetic or face in UP. Narendra Modi was everything. Ram mandir or Hindutva were the issues to win votes. But now, the situation is so bad that it wants support of Prasada,” it said sarcastically. The Uddhav Thackeray-led party said the important issue is why are the Congress leaders jumping ship. Talking about the defection of Jyotiraditya Scindia to the BJP and the rebellion of Sachin Pilot, the Sena said that in Punjab, too, there is a rebellion in the Congress. It, however, said that rebellion and factionalism is not restricted to the Congress alone. “Despite being in position to win Kerala and Assam, the Congress couldn’t do so. It lost Pu-
Mobile-for-girls remarks: women’s panel chief mulls show-cause notice Lucknow, Jun 11 (PTI) : UP State Women’s Commission chairperson Vimla Batham on Friday said she is contemplating to give a show-cause notice to a panel member, who had suggested that girls should be kept off mobile phones by families who don’t want them “running away” with boys. “Girls should not be given mobile phones and if given, families should keep tabs on them. Girls talk with boys over the phone and later run away with them,” commission member Meena Kumari had told reporters in Aligarh on Thursday when asked about the rise in crime against women. “The statement was unfortunate and should not have been issued. I had asked her to apologise for it and she tendered an apology for it before the media on Thursday,” Vimla Batham told PTI over the phone. Batham said Meena Kumari said her statement “was not intentional and was in the context of the cases which had come before her and were linked to mobile phones”. The commission chairperson said she is contemplating giving a show-cause notice to the member to ensure that such things are not repeated in future. Batham said in the present times, mobile phones have become a necessity as even classes are being held online. “It was wrong to say such things,” Batham added. Apart from asking people not to give mobile phones to their daughters, Meena Kumar had asked mothers to keep tabs on them.
ducherry. But there is no discussion on what the Congress should do next and how it should resurrect itself . Except in Maharashtra, Kerala and Karnataka, the Congress is fighting for its survival everywhere else. This political imbalance is harmful to the democracy,” it said. The Cong ress has done a lot of work in the pre-Indepedence era and even after that. The Congress has a contribution in building the nation. Even today, the ‘Nehru-Gandhi’ identity of the country cannot be obliterated… The Congress has a strong hold at the grass root level, it said. “Congress president Sonia Gandhi has ably carried out her responsibility in the party. Now, Rahul Gandhi has to create a strong team, which will be the answer to the challenge before the party,” the Sena added.
7 TN’s Covid orphans PM reviews performance mount to 1,400 of ministers in last 2 years Chennai, Jun 11 (IANS): The District Child Protection offices of Tamil Nadu have identified about 1,400 children in the state who have lost either one or both parents to the Covid19 pandemic since the first wave hit the state. This data compiled by the district child protection offices are as on Wednesday. Of this 50 children are orphaned, losing both parents. The Tamil Nadu state government has announced 5 lakh to the children who are orphaned due to Covid19. However if a person is cured of Covid-19 and dies due to post Covid complications, there is no compensation to the children who lose their parents creating a major discrepancy. The NCPR informed the Supreme Court that between April 1, 2020, and June 5, 2021, more than 30,000 children across the country lost both the parents or one of the parents due to Covid-19.

implementation, civil aviation, railways, food and consumer affairs, jal shakti, petroleum, steel and environment were among those who were called for the meetings, they said. These meetings are expected to continue for several days, the sources added. The Cabinet meeting, which is chaired by the prime minister, is usually held once a week and that of the council of ministers once a month. Jagan urges Pradhan to set up petro complex
New Delhi, Jun 11 (PTI): Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy on Friday called on Union Steel and Petroleum Minister Dharmendra Pradhan and urged him not to privatise Visakhapatnam Steel Plant (VSP). On his second day of a two-day visit to Delhi, Reddy held over an hour-long discussion with Pradhan on the Kakinada Petro Complex and VSP, according to an official statement. In the meeting, the CM appealed to the central government to stop privatisation of VSP and requested it to consider the alternatives suggested by the state in reviving the plant. He said 20,000 people are employed in VSP and thousands more are having indirect employment. The company performed well and generated profits between 2002 and 2015. The plant has gone
Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy with Dharmendra Pradhan
through an expansion by taking loans, but due to the slump in the international market during 2014-15, the company fell into debts with the increasing operational costs and lack of own mines, he said. Reddy requested to allot the captive mine in Odisha that will help in reviving VSP. He also suggested other possibilities in restructuring the finances of VSP, where all the short-term and long-term loans could be converted into equity easing the burden.
The plant has a debt of Rs 22,000 crore, which is being serviced at interest rates as high as 14 per cent. Conversion of these loans into equity and listing the entity on the stock exchange, would remove the interest burden totally, where the banks would also encash through the stock exchange, he added. The CM said VSP has supplied 7,000 tonnes of oxygen during the second wave of COVID-19, saving lives of
people in hard times. Discussing the Kakinada Petro Complex, Reddy said a promise was made to set up a petro complex at Kakinada SEZ (special economic zone) under the Andhra Pradesh Reorganization Act. The detailed project reports (DPRs) have been prepared for the project by HPCL-GAIL companies together with a capacity of one million tonne and at a cost of Rs 32,900 crore. As the Centre has asked for Rs 975 crore per annum under viability gap funding (VGF) for 15 years, the chief minister requested to cut down VGF as the state could not bear such a burden in the present circumstances. Reddy said the central government has reduced the corporate tax by 25 per cent and overall rate of interest across the world had also been reduced. He added that the project can be made possible without any VGF.
Govt welcomes suggestions from experts on COVID-19 Centre ‘abusing’ some state govts: Sisodia who had coronavirus infection and that vaccinating the vulnerable and those at risk, instead of mass populationwide inoculation including children, should be the aim at present. At a press conference, NITI Aayog member (Health) V K Paul said these recommendations have been made by respectable epidemiologists and experts who are from very respectable institutions. “We welcome their suggestions and will hold one on one discussion with them,” he said. On the suggestion of doing away with inoculation of those having recovered from COVID-19, Paul
said such decisions are to be taken by the National Technical Advisory Group on Immunisation in India (NTAGI), which receives such suggestions, reviews and deliberates on them. “They looked at science and the data available when they took the decision that Covid patients can get vaccinated three months after recovery from illness. If more data becomes available and new suggestions come, they will consider them and deliberate upon them. It is a dynamic process. “Even in WHO and other countries, several decisions are being refined or changed from time to time.
Prashant Kishor meets Sharad Pawar; sets off political speculation
Prashant Kishor and Sharad Pawar
M U M BAI , J UN 1 1 (PTI): Political strategist Prashant Kishor on Friday called on NCP president Sharad Pawar at the latter’s residence here and held talks with him for around three hours, setting tongues wagging in political circles. NCP sources said apart from discussing the prevailing political situation, Pawar hosted lunch for Kishor.
The meeting got over by around 2 pm, but neither Kishor nor Pawar spoke to the media persons gathered outside ‘Silver Oak’ (NCP chief ’s residence). This is Kishor’s first meeting with Pawar after the victory of the DMK and the TMC in the assembly elections in Tamil Nadu and West Bengal respectively. He had helped craft the election strategy
for these parties in the assembly elections. After the assembly poll results, the election strategist had said that he was “quitting this space”. Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar downplayed the meeting, saying that Kishor has already said he will not be a political strategist any more. Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Raut said many leaders are in touch with Kishor, while NCP’s Chhagan Bhujbal said he was no aware of the agenda of the meeting. Stating that Kishor was a successful political strategist, Bhujbal said he was sure that Pawar will take into account Kishor’s suggestions. Kishor had met Uddhav Thackeray in 2019 before the latter became chief minister.
Decisions are taken based on Science. Appropriate deliberations will be held on such suggestions,” he noted. The experts from the Indian Public Health Association (IPHA), Indian Association of Preventive and Social Medicine (IAPSM) and Indian Association of Epidemiologists (IAE) said “the present situation of the pandemic in the country demands that we should be guided by the logistics and epidemiological data to prioritise vaccination rather than opening vaccination for all age groups at this stage”. “Opening all fronts simultaneously will drain human and other resources
and would be spreading it too thin to make an impact at the population level,” the experts said in the report. Highlighting that vaccination of young adults and children is not supported by evidence and would not be cost effective, they said unplanned inoculation can promote mutant strains. “Mass, indiscriminate, and incomplete vaccination can also trigger emergence of mutant strains. Given the rapid transmission of infection, it is unlikely that mass vaccination of all adults will catch up with the pace of natural infection among our young population,” they said.

New Delhi, Jun 11 (PTI): Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia on Friday accused the Centre of abusing few state governments instead of supporting them and claimed the BJP has become “Bharatiya Jhagda Party”. “The Centre does not have any other job apart from abusing some state governments. The entire central government and BJP are targeting chief ministers of three-four states. Sometimes, they abuse the West Bengal CM, sometimes Delhi CM and sometimes they fight with Jharkhand CM,”

he alleged during an online briefing. Referring to recent instances where the Supreme Court intervened in matter related to board exams and oxygen shortage, he claimed that the Centre only works
after the apex court raps it. “They said oxygen supply was not done properly by the states but everyone knows who was responsible for the mess. It was after the Supreme Court intervened that the situation was brought under control. Students wanted board exams to be cancelled but after the SC came in the picture, the government said they are cancelling the exams. “States kept asking for vaccines but the government did not hear them. It was after the SC intervened that the Centre said they will provide free vaccines to states,” he said.

ED issues notice to Bitcoin exchange WazirX
NEW DELHI, JUN 11 (NPN): The Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Friday said it has issued a show cause notice to the country’s largest cryptocurrency exchange for undertaking transactions worth over Rs 2,790 crore in alleged violation of the Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA). Mumbai headquartered WazirX is as a domestic crypto currency and bitcoin exchange start-up registered under the company name Zanmai Labs Pvt Ltd that was incorporated in December, 2017. The notice issued by the central probe agency under various sections of the FEMA names the exchange (WazirX), the company and directors Nischal Shetty and Sameer Hanuman Mhatre. The exchange and its promoters denied any wrongdoing and said they are “in compliance with all applicable laws”. The ED issued a statement saying that it stumbled upon the transactions of the exchange during an ongoing money laundering probe
into “Chinese-owned” illegal online betting applications. The show cause notice is for transactions worth Rs 2,790.74 crore, the ED said. Shetty, also the CEO of the exchange, took to Twitter and said WazirX was yet to receive any show cause notice from the ED as mentioned in media reports. “WazirX is in compliance with all applicable laws. We go beyond our legal obligations by following know your customer (KYC) and anti money laundering (AML) processes and have always provided information to law enforcement authorities whenever required,” he posted on his handle.
He added: “We are able to trace all users on our platform with official identity information.” “Should we receive a formal communication or notice from the ED, we’ll fully cooperate in the investigation,” Shetty said. In its statement, The ED described in detail its investigation “It was seen that the accused Chinese nationals had laundered proceeds of crime worth about Rs 57 crore by converting Indian Rupee (INR) deposits into cryptocurrency tether (USDT) and then transferred it to Binance (exchange registered in Cayman Islands) Wallets based on instructions
received from abroad,” it said. Binance is considered a market leader in this domain and had acquired WazirX in 2019. “WazirX allows a wide range of transactions with crypto currencies (CC), including their exchange with INR and vice-versa, exchange of CCs, person to person (P2P) transactions and even transfer/receipt of crypto currency held in its pool accounts to wallets of other exchanges, which could be held by foreigners in foreign locations,” the ED alleged. WazirX, it alleged, “does not” collect the requisite documents in clear violation of the basic mandatory anti-money Laundering (AML) and combating financing of terrorism (CFT) norms and also FEMA guidelines. “In the period under investigation, users of WazirX via its pool account, have received incoming cryptocurrency worth Rs 880 crore from Binance accounts and transferred out cryptocurrency worth Rs 1,400 crore to Binance accounts.
“None of these transactions are available on the blockchain for any audit or investigation,” the ED claimed. It was found that WazirX clients could transfer ‘valuable’ crypto currencies to any person irrespective of its location and nationality “without” any proper documentation whatsoever, making it a safe haven for users looking for money laundering and other illegitimate activities, the agency alleged. The show cause notice was issued to the company, following the investigation of these alleged violations and as stated to be contravention of the FEMA, official sources said. The Indian government has said that it was open to evaluate and explore new technologies like crypto currencies for improving governance. A Bill in this regard could be introduced in the Parliament and recommendations made by a high-level internal ministerial committee on digital currencies could be included, the government has said.

NPCC minority cell holds virtual protest over fuel price hike
DIMAPUR, JUN 11 (NPN): In response to the call given by All India Congress Committee (AICC), minority affairs department of Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee (NPCC) on Friday registered its protest virtually through social media the hike in petrol and diesel prices that affected prices of essential items, vegetables, etc. In a press release, NPCC minority affairs department State chairman Rajesh Kumar Sethi said the protest was carried out virtually as Nagaland was currently under lockdown
and the administration’s guidelines had to be followed. With 16 hikes being made in the past month and four significant hikes in June already, he observed that prices of petrol and diesel had reached new highs across the country. He said the massive hike in petrol and diesel prices was a prime example of the failure of BJP-led Modi government, adding this would put a burden on all countrymen. According to Sethi, the prices of petrol and diesel were increased 47 times by
Modi government in just last five months alone, pointing out that since last year the prices of petrol and diesel were increased by Rs 26.79 and Rs 25.02 respectively. Claiming that Congress always stood by the citizens of India, he asserted the party would not allow the BJP government to continue exploiting people. He alleged despite a decline in Brent crude prices from $130 a barrel during UPA II reign to $55-60 a barrel now under BJP, the price of petrol had gone up by 26% and diesel by 42% since Modi came to power.
Fuel demand slips to 9-month low in May NEW DELHI, JUN 11 (PTI): India’s fuel demand in May slumped to its lowest in nine months as restrictions to curb the second wave of COVID infections stalled mobility and muted economic activity. Fuel demand fell 1.5 per cent to 15.1 million tonnes despite the low base of May 2020 and was down 11.3 per cent when compared to the previous month, according to data from the Petroleum Planning and Analysis Cell (PPAC) of the oil ministry. India was under one of the world’s strictest lockdowns
in May last year, which brought all mobility and economic activity to a grinding halt. This year, though the infection rate is much severe, restrictions are localised. Personal mobility is not as hampered as last year and more factories have remained open while cargo movement between states too hasn’t been as badly affected. Petrol consumption at 1.99 million tonnes in May was up 12 per cent over the previous year, it was down 16 per cent over April and 27 per cent over the pre-COVID era.

International oil benchmark Brent crude was trading 0.22 per cent higher at USD 72.68 per barrel. The rupee slipped 1 paisa to end at 73.07 against the US dollar amid strengthening of the American currency against key rivals and rising crude oil prices. Foreign institutional investors (FIIs) remained net buyers in the capital markets, as they purchased shares worth Rs 1,329.70 crore on Thursday, as per provisional data.

Covid dent: PV sales down by over 61% from May’19 levels NEW DELHI, JUN 11 (IANS): Covid-induced economic volatility contracted the demand for domestic passenger vehicles in May 2021 from May 2019 levels. However, base effect along with low interest rates and some pent-up demand showed an accelerated rise in domestic demand in May 2021 on a year-on-year basis. Accordingly, sales of passenger vehicles increased to 88,045 in May this year
compared to 33,546 units sold during the same period of 2020. The May 2021 figures were lower by 61.2 per cent from 2,26,975 units sold during May 2019 levels. The category includes sub-segments of cars, utility vehicles and vans. A total of 41,536 passenger cars were sold in the domestic market, up from 14,460 units in the corresponding period of 2020. The sub-category had an off-take of 1,43,449 units.

The IL&FS crisis had first appeared in July 2018 after the company defaulted on a series of debt obligations due to a liquidity crisis. At that time, IL&FS had assets worth more than Rs 1.15 lakh crore. In August 2018, IL&FS had collapsed as it defaulted on bonds. Parthasarathy had been working with IL&FS for the past 30 years before he left in 2018. As of March 2018, it owed over Rs 90,000 crore to banks and other creditors. Netanyahu lashes G-7 to pledge 1 bn Covid vax for world outIsrael’s as end of his era draws near C a r b i s Bay ( E n g land), Jun 11 (AP): World leaders from the Group of Seven industrialized nations are set to commit at their summit to share at least 1 billion coronavirus shots with struggling countries around the world — half the doses coming from the US and 100 million from the UK. Vaccine sharing commitments from President Joe Biden and British Prime Minister Boris Johnson set the stage for the G-7 leaders’ meeting in southwest England, where leaders will pivot Friday from opening greetings and a “family photo” directly into a session on “Building Back Better From COVID-19.” “We’re going to help lead the world out of this pandemic working alongside our global partners,” Biden said, adding that the G-7 nations would join the US in outlining their vaccine donation commitments at the three-day summit. The G-7 also includes Canada, France, Germany, Italy and Japan. The leaders meeting in the resort of Carbis Bay

hope to energize the global economy as well. On Friday they are set to formally embrace a global minimum tax of at least 15 per cent on corporations, seconding an agreement reached a week ago at a meeting of their finance ministers. The minimum is meant to stop companies from using tax havens and other tools to avoid taxes. It represents a potential win for the Biden administration, which has proposed a global minimum tax as a way to pay for infrastructure projects, in addition to creating an alternative that could
remove some European countries’ digital services taxes that largely hit U.S. tech firms. For Johnson, the first G-7 summit in two years — last year’s was scuttled by the pandemic — is a chance to set out his vision of a post-Brexit “Global Britain” as a midsized country with an outsized role in international problem-solving. It’s also an opportunity to underscore the UKUS bond, an alliance often called the “special relationship.” After a meeting with Biden that both sides hailed as a success, Johnson said he
EU Parliament calls for more sanctions on Belarus
Strasbourg, Jun 11 (IANS): Following the May 23 forced landing of a Ryanair plane travelling between two EU capitals and the arrest of blogger Roman Protasevich in Belarus, the European Parliament has called for further sanctions on the hardline regime in Minsk. Punitive measures should be taken against the crude oil-processing industry, the production of petroleum products, and the potash, steel and wood-processing industries, it said in a resolution adopted on Thursday. In addition, cooperation with state-owned Belarusian banks should be stopped, reports dpa news agency. Consideration should
also be given to temporarily excluding Belarus from the Swift payment system. Josep Borrell, the EU’s foreign affairs commissioner, said during Tuesday’s plenary debate that he hoped the bloc’s member states would adopt further punitive measures on Belarus at the next summit. For the first time, targeted economic sanctions had been agreed upon. Belarusian authorities forced the Ryanair passenger plane on its way from Athens to Vilnius to make a stopover in Minsk and arrested the government critic Protasevich and his girlfriend Sofia Sapega on board. The EU then reimposed sanctions on the former Soviet republic. Since
last Saturday, Belarusian airlines are no longer allowed to fly into the bloc’s airspace. Due to the ongoing repression of the democracy movement in Belarus, the EU had already adopted several packages of sanctions targeting President Alexander Lukashenko’s supporters last year. Russia’s possible role in the case should be investigated and, if necessary, sanctions imposed on those responsible, they said. MEPs also backed a call by Belarusian opposition activist Svetlana Tikhanovskaya for the establishment of an international criminal court to hold the leadership in Minsk accountable.
prefers the term “indestructible relationship.” The official summit business starts Friday, with the customary formal greeting and a socially distanced group photo. Later the leaders will meet Queen Elizabeth II and other senior royals at the Eden Project, a lush, domed eco-tourism site built in a former quarry pit. The G-7 leaders have faced mounting pressure to outline their global vaccinesharing plans, especially as inequities in supply around the world have become more pronounced. In the U.S., there is a large vaccine stockpile and the demand for shots has dropped precipitously in recent weeks. Biden said the US will donate 500 million COVID19 vaccine doses and previewed a coordinated effort by the advanced economies to make vaccination widely and speedily available everywhere. The commitment was on top of 80 million doses Biden has already pledged to donate by the end of June. Johnson, for his part, said the first 5 million UK doses would be shared

The 28-year-old was also banned from holding public office or possessing any weapons, television station BFMTV reported from the courtroom in Valence. Damien T slapped the 43-year-old president on Tuesday during a visit to Tain-l’Hermitage, south of Lyon. The incident caught on camera caused consternation throughout the country. stressing it was an “isolated act”. He went on to talk about violence against women and comment on how there had been “moments of very high tension in our country,” for example during the “Yellow Vest” protests.
Jerusalem, Jun 11 (AP): In what appear to be the final days of his historic 12-year rule, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is not leaving the political stage quietly. The longtime leader is accusing his opponents of betraying their voters, and some have needed special security protection. Netanyahu says he is the victim of a “deep state” conspiracy. He speaks in apocalyptic terms when talking about the country without his leadership. “They are uprooting the good and replacing it with the bad and dangerous,” Netanyahu told the conservative Channel 20 TV station this week. “I fear for the destiny of the nation.” Such language has made for tense days as Netanyahu and his loyalists make a final desperate push to try to prevent a new government from taking office on Sunday. With his options running out, it has also provided a preview

of Netanyahu as opposition leader. For those who have watched Netanyahu dominate Israeli politics for much of the past quarter century, his recent behaviour is familiar. He frequently describes threats both large and small in stark terms. He has belittled his rivals and thrived by using divideand-conquer tactics. He paints his Jewish opponents as weak, self-hating “leftists,” and Arab politicians as a potential fifth column of terrorist sympathizers. He routinely presents himself in grandiose terms as the only person capable of leading the country
through its never-ending security challenges. “Under his term, identity politics are at an alltime high,” said Yohanan Plesner, president of the Israel Democracy Institute, a non-partisan think tank. It is a formula that has served Netanyahu well. He has led the right-wing Likud party with an iron fist for over 15 years, racking up a string of electoral victories that earned him the nickname, “King BibI.” He fended off pressure by President Barack Obama to make concessions to the Palestinians and publicly defied him in 2015 by delivering a speech in Congress against the U.S.-led nuclear agreement with Iran. Although Netanyahu was unable to block the deal, he was richly rewarded by President Donald Trump, who recognised contested Jerusalem as Israel’s capital, pulled out of the nuclear agreement and helped broker historic diplomatic pacts between Israel and four Arab nations.
China draws closer to Myanmar military junta Ko l k at a , J u n 1 1 (IANS): China seems to be on the verge of recognising Myanmar’s military regime, reversing its previous policy of choosing a side in the country’s ongoing political crisis. On June 5, junta leader Min Aung Hlaing and his Foreign Minister Wunna Maung Lwin met Chinese Ambassador Chen Hai, after which the Chinese Embassy’s Facebook statement identified the senior general as the “Leader of Myanmar”. Chinese state-run media outlet Global Times also made the shift, referring to Min Aung Hlaing as the “Myanmar leader” in an article on Sunday. The comment section of the post was hit by avalanche of angry messages from Myanmar users, most of whom described Min Aung Hlaing as “democra-
Greta back for climate protest at Swedish parliament Stockholm, Jun 11 (IANS): Following a long spell of online protests, Swedish environment activist Greta Thunberg was back in front of the Swedish parliament building on Friday for an in-person demonstration against climate change. Together with a handful of other protesters, Thunberg, showcasing her famous sign saying “School strike for climate” and wearing a face mask with the ‘Fridays for Future’ logo, returned to her original site in Stockholm, reports dpa news agency. “Today we are back outside the Parliament. But the pandemic is still far from over, so we will continue to keep our numbers as low as possible and act
in the coming weeks, with the remainder coming over the next year. He said he expected the G-7 to commit to 1 billion doses in all. “At the G-7 Summit I hope my fellow leaders will make similar pledges so that, together, we can vaccinate the world by the end of next year and build back better from coronavirus,” Johnson said in a statement, referencing a slogan that he and Biden have both used. French President Emmanuel Macron welcomed the U.S. commitment and said Europe should do the same. He said France would share at least 30 million doses globally by year’s end. At a news conference, he said time was of the essence. “It’s almost more important to say how many (doses) we deliver the next month than making promises to be fulfilled in 18 months from now,” he said. Biden predicted the U.S. doses and the overall G-7 commitment would “supercharge” the global vaccination campaign, adding that the U.S. doses come with no strings attached.
mate youth movement ‘Fridays for Future’ was born, sparking mass demonstrations attended by hundreds of thousands of mainly young participants across the globe. However, the coronavirus pandemic temporarily stopped such large-scale events. Unable to keep up her Friday protests in person, Thunberg had turned to posting images online of herself holding up her protest sign at home. In March, she held a sit-in in front of the European Commission’s representation in Stockholm to protest against the EU’s agricultural policy and in April she published a picture of herself in a deforested area in central Sweden.

and the “implementation of Myanmar-China bilateral projects”, lending more strength to the idea that the junta may have agreed to speed up Chinese development projects in Myanmar in exchange for political support. Most of the 15 new mega-infrastructure projects cleared by the military junta are Chinese. “They also discussed for closer collaboration between the two countries in both regional and multilateral contexts, particularly the ASEAN and the US,” the GNLM article says in a likely reference to China shielding Myanmar from any international consequences or pressure due to the coup. Hammering the point home, GNLM said the two ministers discussed ASEAN’s role in resolving the “political developments” in
Myanmar, with an emphasis on “non-interference”. Meanwhile, Wang assured his counterpart that China will always support Myanmar in choosing its own developmental path and friendly relations between the two countries have not been affected by recent developments. “Of course, Myanmar did not choose this path – a handful of generals did at the expense of millions, who have emphatically rejected military rule,” said a spokesperson of the Myanmar’s exile National Unity Government (NUG). During the MekongLancang Cooperation meeting with other foreign ministers from the Mekong region, the bloc approved 22 projects worth $8 million to be implemented in Myanmar, according to state media.
S.Africa ‘technically’ enters 3rd Covid wave J o h a n n e s bu rg, Jun 11 (IANS): South Africa has “technically” entered the third wave of the coronavirus pandemic, the country’s National Institute for Communicable Diseases said. The national sevenday moving average incidence, which reached 5,959 cases, exceeded the new wave threshold defined by the Ministerial Advisory Committee of the government, Xinhua news agency quoted the Institute as saying on Thursday. The threshold was defined as 30 per cent of the peak incidence of the previous wave. The Institute also reported 9,149 new Covid19 cases, bringing the na-
tional tally to 1,722,086, while the death toll stood at 57,410. The positivity testing rate was 15.7 per cent, it said. The majority of new cases were from the Gauteng province, which hosts the nation’s economic hub Johannesburg and the administrative capital Pretoria, accounting for 61 per cent of the infections, according to the statement. Western Cape province, home to the legislative capital Cape Town, came second with 10 per cent of the new cases, it read. Previously, four of South Africa’s nine provinces, including Northern Cape, Free State, North
West and Gauteng, had already entered a third wave at the provincial level. On Thursday morning, Western Cape said it was entering the third wave. The nation plans to vaccinate about 67 per cent of the population by the end of this year with three phases to achieve herd immunity. Following the first phase for healthcare workers only, the current second phase inoculates persons aged 60 years and above first, who will be followed by other groups of people including essential workers, persons in congregate settings and persons over 18 years of age with co-morbidities.
Taliban overruns another crucial Afghan district Kabul, Jun 11 (IANS): Taliban militants seized control of another important district in Afghanistans northern Takhar province, officials said on Friday. Ishkimish, a strategically crucial district for both the Taliban and the government, fell to the militants after tough clashes late on Thursday, local council members said. After hours of fighting, the security forces were forced to leave the district due to lack of ammunition and air support, dpa news agency quoted the members as saying said. The fighting over control of the territory has also left a number of security forces dead and wounded, but an exact number was unknown, they said.
At least 15 districts have fallen to the Taliban.
According to the councillors, the district is strategically important as it connects four more districts in the province and Taliban militants can now easily threaten neighbouring districts. In the meantime, the Taliban have also been at-
tacking parts of Bangi, another district in the province, since Thursday, the officials said. The militants have seen a string of gains in the country recently. Since the beginning of the official withdrawal of the US and other NATO troops
in Afghanistan on May 1, at least 15 districts have fallen to the Taliban. Afghanistan has 34 provinces and around 400 districts. District centres serve as secondary-level administrative units, one level below the provinces.

Kim Jong Un declares culture war against South Astronomers spot a ‘blinking giant’ near Milky Way Korea’s growing influence in North
A
n international team of astronomers has spotted a giant ‘blinking’ star towards the centre of the Milky Way, more than 25,000 light years away. The star, VVVWIT-08, decreased in brightness by a factor of 30, so that it nearly disappeared from the sky. While many stars change in brightness because they pulsate or are eclipsed by another star in a binary system, it is exceptionally rare for a star to become fainter over a period of several months and then brighten again, the team said. The researchers believe that VVV-WIT-08 may belong to a new class of “blinking giant” binary star system, where a giant star 100 times larger than the Sun is eclipsed once every few decades by an as-yet unseen orbital companion. The companion, which may be another star or a planet, is surrounded by an opaque disc, which covers the giant star, causing it to disappear and reappear in the sky. The study is published in Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society. “It’s amazing that we just observed a dark, large and elongated object pass
between us and the distant star and we can only speculate what its origin is,” said Sergey Koposov from the University of Edinburgh. Since the star is located in a dense region of the Milky Way, the researchers considered whether some unknown dark object could have simply drifted in front of the giant star by chance. However, simulations showed that there would have to be an implausibly large number of dark bodies floating around the galaxy for this scenario to be likely. One other star system of this sort has been known for a long time. The giant star Epsilon Aurigae is partly eclipsed by a huge disc of dust every 27 years, but only dims by about 50 per cent. A second example, TYC 2505-672-1, was found a few years ago, and holds the current record for the eclipsing binary star system with the longest orbital period -- 69 years -- a record for which VVV-WIT-08 is currently a contender. The UK-based team has also found two more of these peculiar giant stars in addition to VVVWIT-08, suggesting that these may be a new class of “blinking giant” stars for (IANS) astronomers to investigate.
Hackers selling 780GB game source data from EA including FIFA 21
C
ybercriminals have broken into game giant Electronic Arts (EA), stealing and selling massive 780GB data that contains game source code for FIFA 21, the Frostbite engine and other game development tools. Motherboard reports that EA, the publisher of Battlefield, FIFA and The Sims, has confirmed the data breach. “We are investigating a recent incident of intrusion into our network where a limited amount of game source code and related tools were stolen,” an EA spokesperson told Motherboard in a statement on Thursday. “No player data was accessed, and we have no reason to believe there is any risk to player privacy,” the spokesperson added. The hackers claimed on underground web hacking forums that they have “full capability of exploiting on all EA services” The hackers said they have taken the source code for FIFA 21, as well as code for its matchmaking server. “Other stolen information includes proprietary EA frameworks and software development kits (SDKs), bundles of code that can make game development more streamlined,” the re-
port noted. Recently, hackers stole CD Projekt Red’s source code for Cyberpunk 2077 and The Witcher 3. Last year, Japanese video game company Nintendo admitted that over 160,000 user accounts were compromised where hackers took
the login IDs and passwords. Nintendo which “sincerely apologised” for the incident said it is disabling the ability to log into a Nintendo Account through a Nintendo Network ID (NNID) which became the gateway for hackers. (IANS)

But even a dictator may have trouble holding back the tide. In recent months, hardly a day has gone by without Kim or state media railing against “anti-socialist and nonsocialist” influences spreading in his country, especially South Korean movies, K-dramas and Kpop videos. 2nd Test: England all out for 303
BIRMINGHAM, JUN 11 (AGENCIES/IANS): Dan Lawrence and Mark Wood helped to push England to 303 runs in its first innings before New Zealand bowled out the hosts on the second morning of the second test at Edgbaston on Friday. Wood, resuming on 16 not out, swung away and entertained a lively home crowd with six boundaries before edging a delivery from Matt Henry (3-78) onto his stumps to finish on 41. That got England to 288-8, adding 30 runs since play resumed. England reached 303-9 on Lawrence’s four after Stuart Broad lasted just four balls for his 37th duck in test cricket. Trent Boult (4-85) finished off James Anderson leg before wicket after the original call was overturned on review. England’s mostcapped test player scored four runs from 16 balls. Lawrence, who had resumed on 67, was unbeaten on 81 to match England opener Rory Burns’ runs total from Thursday. In reply, New Zealand was 43-1 at lunch with Tom Latham (6) falling lbw to
Rijiju launches athlete injury management system NEW DELHI, JUN 11 (PTI): Sports Minister Kiren Rijiju on Friday launched an ambitious initiative to provide world class treatment and rehabilitation to elite athletes injured during competition or training. The Centralised Athlete Injury Management System (CAIMS) aims to provide inputs on prevention, diagnosis and high quality treatment and rehabilitation to athletes on time and maintain records for mapping their injury via an Online Athlete Management System. This system, to be run by the Sports Authority of India (SAI) in collaboration with the leading medical experts of the country, will be applied initially to
the developmental group of athletes for the 2024 Paris Olympics and will broaden to others later on. ‘I have seen athletes whose careers have been damaged or shortened due to lack of timely and proper treatment of even common injuries. For some injuries, treatment is not available in our country and athletes will have to go abroad. So, this is a humble beginning to address that,’ Rijiju said in an online event. ‘I hope this initiative will lead to a system where we will have a professional way of managing injury of athletes. It is something long desired by one and all. This is a centralised platform where we will have a common
and uniform injury and rehabilitation management system.’ He said sports science in India is still in a nascent state and need improvement. ‘We want to be a sporting powerhouse and to have a world class injury management is an integral part of that. Injury management is a part of that (sports science). We need an excellent and professional injury management of the athletes.’ ‘We will need upgradation and improvisation in many things and that is how we will learn to make this a success.’ Indian Olympic Association President Narinder Batra lauded the Sports Ministry and the Sports Authority of India for the initiative.

Tsitsipas at French Open for 1st Slam final PARIS, JUN 11 (AGENCIES): Stefanos Tsitsipas went from way ahead to suddenly stuck in a five-set struggle against Alexander Zverev at the French Open on Friday before emerging to earn his first berth in a Grand Slam final. The fifth-seeded Tsitsipas entered with an 0-3 record in major semifinals and it seemed as if he might let this one slip away, too, until a late surge carried him to the 6-3, 6-3, 4-6, 4-6, 6-3 victory after more than 3 1/2 hours at Court Philippe Chatrier. On Sunday, Tsitsipas will face 13-time Roland Garros champion Nadal or top-seeded Novak Djokovic for the championship on the red clay. Nadal and Djokovic were scheduled to face each other for the 58th time later Friday. Tsitsipas regained control of his semifinal on a cloudy afternoon in the late going thanks to a combination of more solid returning by him and a succession of groundstroke unforced errors from the sixth-seeded Zverev, a 24-year-old from
row and leading the ATP in total match wins (39 now) and clay-court wins (22) in 2021. Three of his seven career tour-level titles came on clay, including a pair this year — at the Monte Carlo Masters and Lyon. Zverev’s loss makes him 0-10 against members of the Top 10 at Grand Slam tournaments, an especially confounding statistic when viewed in contrast to his 31-

Germany. The fifth set began with a key service hold after Tsitsipas double-faulted to fall behind love-40. From there, he won five consecutive points, including one with a cross-court forehand passing winner that he celebrated by shaking his racket as the crowd chanted, “Tsi-tsi-pas! Tsi-tsi-pas! Tsi-tsi-pas!” Then Tsitsipas broke to go up 3-1 with plenty of help from Zverev, who double-faulted, then missed a backhand, followed by a forehand and another backhand. Zverev winced and Tsitsipas raised his right fist.
Fifteen minutes later, Tsitsipas earned his first match point, and while he needed five of them to close the proceedings, he eventually did convert one with an ace. Tsitsipas will be the first player from Greece in a Grand Slam singles final and youngest man to appear in the title match at the French Open since Nadal won the 2008 championship five days after his 22nd birthday. And this is not some out-of-nowhere ascension. Tsitsipas has been building toward this over the past couple of seasons, reaching three major semifinals in a
30 mark against such opponents in any other setting. He hadn’t faced a seeded player en route to the semifinals, including two matches against qualifiers and a quarterfinal victory over 46th-ranked Alejandro Davidovich Fokina. Tsitsipas, meanwhile, was a facing a fourth consecutive seeded foe, after wins over No. 2 Daniil Medvedev, No. 12 Pablo Carreno Busta and No. 31 John Isner.
Barbora vs Anastasia in women’s final
Unseeded Czech Barbora Krejcikova pulled off a remarkable upset by outlasting No.17 seed Maria Sakkari 7-5, 4-6, 9-7 in a French Open women’s semi-final match to reach her first Grand Slam final on Thursday. Barbora saved a match point at 5-3 in the third set and went on to win the titanic battle in three hours and 18 minutes. Barbora will play first-time Grand Slam finalist No.31 seed Russian Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, who defeated world No.85 Tamara Zidansek of Slovenia 7-5, 6-3 in one hour and 34 minutes in an earlier semi-final encounter. On an 11-match winning streak, Barbora needed five match points over two games. She duly subdued the challenge from the Greek player and improved to 3-0 in their head-to-head rivalry. Earlier, Anastasia, 29, became the first woman to play more than 50 major tournaments before reaching a final, having made her Grand Slam debut as a 15-yearold wildcard entrant at the Wimbledon in 2007.
Vinesh reaches final of Poland IPL has put Indian cricketers way Open with contrasting wins ahead of their peers: Paddy Upton
WARSAW, JUN 11 (PTI): Star Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat proved that her preparations for the Tokyo Olympics were on track as she progressed to the 53kg final of Poland Open with two contrasting wins here on Friday. While she had to battle against 2019 World bronze winner Ekaterina Poleshchuk in her opening bout before prevailing 6-2, Vinesh needed only 75 seconds to pin her American rival Amy Ann Fearnside. The 26-year-old Vinesh can now win her third gold in as many tournaments this season, having won titles in Matteo Pellicone (March) and Asian Championship (April). It was a tough start for Vinesh as she was up against fellow 2019 World bronze winner Ekaterina Poleshchuk, whose defence was pretty strong.
CAPE TOWN, JUN 11 (IANS): Former India mental conditioning coach Paddy Upton feels the Indian Premier League (IPL) has taken Indian cricketers to a different level vis-a-vis their peers across the world. “If I look at what the IPL has done for young Indian cricketers, it’s just shot them literally so much further ahead of any of their T20 peers around the world. It’s been an incredible advance to the game and I can only see these T20 leagues just going from strength to strength,” former Cricket South Africa (CSA) performance director told sportskeeda.com Upton, who was with the Indian team as part of
head coach Gary Kirsten’s team from 2008 to 2011, felt that T20 league format was “really threatening the global game”. “T20 cricket itself is obviously a debate that has been going on for a good couple of years. Now, the T20 format around the world is getting more and more popular, more and more following. It is moving in that model. For example, we look at what happens in the football world where there’s more club football than there is international football,” he said.

Italy, Turkey get ball rolling as Euro 2020 begins under Covid cloud ROME, JUN 11 (AGENCIES): An in-form Italy face Turkey in Rome on Friday as Euro 2020 finally gets underway a year behind schedule and with the coronavirus continuing to cast a shadow over the tournament. Postponed 12 months ago because of the pandemic, the European Championship -- with Cristiano Ronaldo’s Portugal the holders -- is being played for the first time all across the continent, with 11 cities from as far apart as Seville to Baku hosting matches. The idea was first mooted by Michel Platini almost a decade ago when he was president of UEFA and has survived the Covid19 crisis, but matches are being played in front of limited crowds and with onerous health restrictions in place. In Rome, the Stadio Olimpico will be filled to about 25 percent of capacity, meaning 16,000 supporters will be present to watch Roberto Mancini’s Italy face Turkey in the first game in Group A. “The opener is always difficult, and there will be plenty of emotions but you can’t get too carried away,” said Mancini, who has guided the Azzurri back to a major tournament after their ignominious failure to reach the 2018 World Cup. Mancini has rebuilt Italy, the 1968 European champions, on a 27-match unbeaten run. “We have created a great squad. We want to continue to have fun together and we will try to make it to London. I’m very positive,” he told reporters. London will host the semi-finals of the 24-team tournament as well as the final on July 11.

Spain, Sweden virus cases
As anticipation grows, the build-up has been overshadowed by several positive virus cases affecting players. Spain’s preparations have been hit after two players, Sergio Busquets and Diego Llorente, tested positive, although Llorente on Thursday returned a negative test. The team even had to name a “parallel” squad of 17 reserve players, fearing a possible wider outbreak in the official 26-man squad. Although captain Busquets still has Covid, Llorente’s test result will allay fears that the first-choice side might have to miss Spain’s opener against Sweden in Seville on Monday. Two Swedish players -- forward Dejan Kulusevski of Juventus and midfielder Mattias Svanberg -- also tested positive, with six reserve players called up on stand-by. But despite the ongoing threat, UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin has been bullish, insisting the Euro will be safe. “It will be the perfect opportunity to show the world that Europe is adapting,” he said recently. “Europe is alive and celebrating life. Europe is back.” The clearest illustration of that is set to come from Budapest, where it is hoped the new Puskas Arena will be packed to capacity.
Tokyo Olympics still undecided on fans—or no fans at all facilities. Dr. Nobuhiko Okabe, director general of the Kawasaki City Institute for Public Health, suggested on Friday he would lean toward few fans. He spoke on a panel put together by the Tokyo Olympic organizing committee. “Thinking in a different way, I think it’s an option to suggest to people to enjoy the games on TV — like teleworking,” he said. “We could suggest a different way of enjoying the games.” Okabe said it was not just a matter of fans in the venues, but what they do after leaving — heading to bars or restaurants. “We don’t want peo-

ple to move much,” he said. “That’s our wish as we think about anti-virus measures.” Organizing committee president Seiko Hashimoto originally said she would announce a decision in April about local fans but
has repeatedly postponed it. Ticket sales were to account for $800 million in income for the organizing committee. Much of that will be lost and has to be made up by Japanese government entities. Japan is officially
spending $15.4 billion to run the Olympics, though government audits suggest the figure is much higher. All but $6.7 billion is public money. The Switzerland-based Inter national Olympic Committee derives almost 75% of its income from selling broadcast rights, which drives the games and the urgency to hold it during a pandemic. Japan’s JiJi Press reported Friday, without citing sources, that Dr. Shigeru Omi would issue a report next week that warns about the risks of having fans. He is a former World Health Organization regional director and a head of a government task force
on the virus. Speaking in a parliamentary session last week, he said “it is crucial that we must not let the Olympics trigger a flow of people.” Hashimoto warned there could be penalties for anyone who breaks strict rules around the Tokyo Games. She did not say what they would be and said this was still under discussion. The protocol for anyone entering Japan for the Olympics requires frequent testing, limited movement, and monitoring by GPS on smartphones. This includes everyone from athletes to journalists to staff and other officials working the games.
Highlanders beat Brumbies, move into top spot in Super Rugby Anirban Lahiri starts with 69, lies WELLINGTON, JUN 11 (AGENCIES): The Dunedin, New Zealandbased Highlanders moved temporarily into first place in Super Rugby on Friday with a 33-12, bonus-point win over the ACT Brumbies. The Wellington-based Hurricanes earlier had a 43-14 bonus-point win over Australian champions the Queensland Reds. With the top two teams qualifying for next weekend’s final, the Auckland-based Blues could finish in first place if they beat Australia’s Western Force on Saturday. The Hurricanes did not hold back in an incident-packed match which included a penalty tr y among eight tries, three yellow cards and several other moments of contention. “We wanted to come out here and put in a performance that we’re proud of, to get five points. We did and now we’ve just got to wait,” Hurricanes captain
Highlanders halfback Aaron Smith makes a break against the Brumbies in Canberra on Friday.
Ardie Savea said. After leading by only 10-7 at halftime and 17-14 in the 10th minute of the second half, the Hurricanes came home strongly with two tries to replacement hooker Dane Coles, a penalty try and another to backrower Devan
Flanders which clinched the vital bonus point with nine minutes remaining. They still ended the regular season on a high note. Even the relatively low-scoring first half was full of movement as both teams had long periods
in possession and created attacks which swept from one end of the field to the other. The first try of the match, after only three minutes, went to Hurricanes midfielder Ngani Laumape and had significance. Lau-
mape played the last of 84 matches for the Hurricanes on Friday before joining the French club Stade Francais. The try was his 48th in the Hurricanes jersey. Laumape was over the line again in the 14th minute but that try and others to Hurricanes fullback Jordie Barrett and Queensland prop Taniela Tupou were all disallowed, mostly for knock-ons. A try to Reds scrumhalf Tate McDermott leveled the score at 7-7 in the 27th and the Hurricanes took the halftime lead with a penalty to Jordie Barrett. Flyhalf Ruben Love put the Hurricanes further ahead with a try in the 45th but the Reds replied with a try from hooker Brandon Paenga-Amosa. The Hurricanes stretched their lead with Coles’ first try, then a contentious penalty try when Reds flyhalf Bryce Hegarty was judged to have deliberately knocked the ball over the dead-ball line.
31st at Palmetto Championship
RIDGELAND (US), JUN 11 (PTI): Indian golfer Anirban Lahiri carded a 2-under 69 to be placed tied-31 after the opening round of the Palmetto Championship here. Lahiri had three birdies against one bogey. He bogeyed the 6th but had birdies on third, 13th and the 18th. It was a crowded leader board and the Indian left a makeable putt inside six feet and a few between 10-15 feet. Lahiri, who missed getting into the field at the Memorial last week, is hoping to turn the tide around this week and find the form which gave him two wins in 2015 and more recently saw him contend at Texas Open where he was fifth. In the same field at Palmetto, India’s Arjun Atwal shot 1-over 72 and was 75th, needing a good second round to make the cut. The field has another former Asian Tour No. 1 in

Thailand’s Kiradech Aphibarnrat, who shot his lowest score in nearly two years with a 4-under 67 pushing him into a share of seventh place after the first round. The 32-year-old Asian star wielded a hot putter at the highly-acclaimed Congaree Golf Club, snaring six birdies against two bogeys, to feature in the top-10 of a PGA TOUR leader board for the first time since November’s Bermuda Championship. Dustin Johnson got off to a fine start with a 6-under 65 but was a shot behind leader Wes Roach. Roach, who was a
stroke in front of Johnson, Doc Redman, Chesson Hadley and South Africa’s Erik van Rooyen, shot his lowest PGA TOUR round since November 2019. Brooks Koepka, playing for the first time since finishing second to Phil Mickelson at the PGA Championship, opened with a 72 and was seven shots behind the leaders. The Palmetto Championships at Congaree Golf Club is a replacement tournament for the cancelled RBC Canadian Open, called off for the second straight season due to COVID-19 pandemic.
