Beijing warns of ‘explosive’ Covid outbreak

SHANGHAI, JUN 11 (AGENCIES): China’s capital Beijing is experiencing an “explosive” COVID-19 outbreak connected to a bar, a government spokesman said on Saturday, as the commercial hub, Shanghai, conducted mass testing to contain a jump in cases tied to a hair salon. The warning followed a new tightening of COVID curbs in Beijing since Thursday, with at least two districts closing some entertainment venues after a flare-up in a neighbourhood full of nightlife, shopping and embassies. So far, the country of 1.4 billion has seen just 5,226 deaths from COVID-19. Beijing authorities said on Saturday that all 61 new cases uncovered in the city on Friday had either visited the Heaven Supermarket Bar or had links to it. “The recent outbreak ... is strongly explosive in nature and widespread in (Cont’d on p-8) scope,” Xu Hejian, spokes-

the course of investigation, the Additional DG (law and order), Sandeep Tamgadge, said that the word “suspension” was basically applicable to civil servants service conduct, adding that he was not aware if the same word was used in the Army. He, however, said that the 30 accused during the investigation period were not attending office, but was attached to the court of inquiry. The ADGP said that the chargesheet was with the competent authority. Responding to a query if the Assam Rifles camp at Mon was vacated, ADGP said they had not completely vacated the camp, but thinned out, adding that they would not be in operation like before. Meanwhile, DGP said that the charge sheet was submitted to the District and Session Court, Mon, on May 30, through additional public prosecutor (APP).

ZCOs dismayed with ZB (AMN) statement

DIMAPUR, JUN 11 (NPN): Zeliangrong Civil Organisations (ZCOs)-- Zeliangrong Baudi (Manipur), Zeliangrong Youth Front and Zeliangrong Students’ Union-- have expressed dismay over the joint press statement issued by Zeliangrong Baudi (AMN), Zeliangrong Baudi (Nagaland) and Zeliangrong Baudi (Assam) rejecting the claim of endorsing the “Agreed Position” signed between the government of India and WC, NNPGs on November 17, 2017. ZCOs through its media and publicity cell stated that the “wild allegation” levelled upon the leaders

of Zeliangrong Baudi and the frontal organisations leaders in connection with the consultative meeting with the seven NNPGs on June 7, 2022 in Dimapur was “totally wrong and baseless.” ZCOs sought to “make it clear” that prior information was intimated to the ZB (AMN) president over telephone regarding the invitation extended to Naga tribal hohos including Zeliangrong organisations of Manipur by seven NNPGs for a consultative meeting, adding that there was no objection or reaction from ZB (AMN) president either. ZCOs said it was also

“considered and felt” that attending the consultative meeting convened by different political groups, which were engaging in political negotiation for peaceful political settlement was “not a crime.” They further clarified that ZCOs leaders right after attending the consultative meeting “straight away” drove to Jalukie from Dimapur and had “a cordial and fruitful discussion” at the residence of ZB (Nagaland) president CR Zeliang regarding the points and issues raised by ZCOs leaders during the consultative meeting with seven NNPGs.

ZCOs claimed that CR Zeliang other leaders including ZB Nagaland vice-president Nicodim, ZB Nagaland advisor Joshua and ZB (AMN) president K Akhang participated in the discussion. It pointed out that as per Zeliangrong Baudi Constitution Article 15 E (iii), (vi) every State Unit was empowered to tackle and deal pertaining to the affairs of any issues under its respective jurisdiction. Therefore, ZCOs said it was the “binding obligation” to discharge its constitutionally empowered responsibilities in the interest of the people. (Cont’d on p-8)

‘Critical Conversations in Naga Society’ book launched

Dr. Hewasa L Khing Staff Reporter DIMAPUR, JUNE 11 (NPN): A book titled “Critical Conversations In Naga Society” was launched by Chief Editor, Nagaland Post, Geoffrey Yaden on Saturday, here at Tetso College, City Campus, Notun Bosti. The book, published by Heritage Publishing House and co-edited by Yanbeni Yanthan and Dr. Hewasa L. Khing, is a collaborative compilation of essays and articles by various writers, activists, social workers, and scholars addressing the

ongoing transformations in the socio-political-economic contexts of Naga society while carrying a conversational pattern of reading. The book has been thematised into four component parts and touches on topics such as language and verbal arts, how society creates and perpetuates its own ideology through the creation of metaphors, it also attempts at critiquing the present socio-economic systems by drawing on historical and critical patterns and processes. The contributing writers are Alexander Coupe, Brainerd Prince,

Easterine Kire, Dolly Kikon, Paul Pimomo, Dr. P.S. Lorin, and Rev. Dr. Wati Aier, among others. In his address, Rev. Dr. Wati Aier, who authored one of the essays emphasised on the importance of conducting such “academic events” and that these events were much needed in the Naga context as it would pave the way for others to follow. He also called up young readers and encouraged them to make best use of the important writings from the book. Further, he, along with other contributors of the book, pressed upon with

positive intention for the scholastic community to continue writing. After the book launch Chief Editor Nagaland Post Geoffrey Yaden, in his speech congratulated – Yanbeni Yanthan and Hewasa Lorin Khing- the authors of ‘Critical Conversations in Naga Society’ including Heritage Publishers for their joint enterprise of opening a chapter for future collaboration on issues and ideas concerning Nagas. Geoffrey said the 3 ‘C’s mentioned as subtitle of the book- Culture, Community, Custom- helped

shape traditional Naga values of honesty, boldness and hard work. He opined that the 3 ‘C’s facilitated the embrace of another ‘C’Christianity-which sparked transformation of Naga society through education and awareness. He said in the past the pioneers were persons of integrity who shunned corruption. However, in the present context, corruption is no longer a dirty word but accepted as ‘adjustment’. Yaden spoke on the deficits in contemporary Naga society which he named as 3 ‘T’s-truth deficit, trust deficit and tolerance deficit. He also said there was uncertainty as contemporary Naga society grapples with issues and problems. In this, the vision of the editors of the book ‘Critical Conversations in Naga Society’ could facilitate in providing one of the platforms for regeneration of Naga society so that the progressive, dynamic and brilliant young minds can help move society forward. Earlier co-editor Yanbeni Yanthan informed

that the book was initially conceptualized as an open access e-resource book that would be accessible to anyone online. However, it was decided later that they would work on something that “looked beyond the ivory tower of academia” and therefore decided to make a co-authored paper open to the public and welcomed perspectives from other walks of life as well. Co-editor Dr. Hewasa L. Khing in her address, said the book was a tiny and initial attempt to showcase and also to provide a platform for writers in our society and for anyone who had a passion for Naga people. Khing stated that the book was initially titled “The Naga Condition” and hoped to cover all the sociopolitical-economic issues in our society but once the essays and articles came in, they decided to let the book take its natural course and let the articles shape the book altogether ending up with the book being titled “Critical Conversations In Naga Society”. In the publisher’s note,

Chief Editor, Heritage Publishing House, Dr. Lanusangla Tzudir, stated that the book was a timely effort to understand Naga realities and called on to evaluate existing arguments and issues within Naga society.

Earlier, launch programme was chaired by IQAC Coordinator, Tetso College, Dr. Chikhosale Thingo, and invocation was pronounced by pastor, Lighthouse Church, Alfred Amri.

Controversy over construction of airport in Cachar district

SILCHAR, JUN 11 (PTI): Controversy has arisen over the Assam government’s efforts to acquire land for setting up a greenfield airport in Cachar district with the Centre claiming that no such proposal has been received for the facility from the BJP-led dispensation in the north-eastern state. The district administration issued a clarification on Friday following a reply by Civil Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia to a letter written by TMC Rajya Sabha MP Sushmita Dev. The Union minister stated that till date the ministry has received ‘’no proposal to construct a greenfield airport in Cachar district of Assam. However, if any such proposal from any airport developer or the state government is received, the same would be considered as per the Greenfield Airports Policy, 2008.” Greenfield air por t means a new airport that is built from scratch on a new location because the existing facility is unable to meet the projected traffic requirements. Additional Deputy Commissioner (Revenue) Pankaj Kumar Deka said in a statement that the entire process of land acquisition for the construction of the airport at Doloo was done following due procedure.

“There are many questions being raised on the proposed airport at Doloo. It is again informed to all concerned that this particular land was taken up as per the instructions received from the state government following due procedure. The land in question was supposed to be handed over free of encumbrance. “It is in the final stage of execution and stakeholders are requested to kindly cooperate’’, the statement said. He clarified that the Gover nment of Assam (GoA) is acquiring land from its fund for the development of an airport. The completion of the formalities would lead to further steps which will be taken by both the state and central governments. The Assam government and the Ministry of Civil Aviation (MoCA) are in constant touch for the last three years over the issue and a team of the Airport Authority of India had first visited the proposed spot in January 2020 for site inspection, Deka said. Quoting Clause 5.1, 5.2, and 5.3 of the Greenfield Airport Act, 2008, the official stated, “in the North-Eastern areas, where it may not be feasible to follow the PPP route, AAI could set up Greenfield Airports by itself, as may be ap-

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has sounded an orange alert for heavy rains in Assam and Meghalaya till June 12.

The Silchar airport at Kumbhirgram is a defence airport and hence there are limitations

in its expansion. Pressure has increased on Silchar Airport with the neighbouring states of Tripura, Manipur, Mizoram, and Meghalaya depending on it. ‘’This is one of the prime reasons why the Barak Valley needs a good airport. Apart from this, the new airport will also bring in job opportunities for many and usher in overall development’’, the official added. Land acquisition of Doloo Tea Estate for the construction of the greenfield airport had led to protests by the tea garden workers but the government had assured them that they will not lose their jobs and none will be evicted from their

Assam govt urges states to include chapter on Lachit

Manipuri film to compete in Ottawa Indian Film Festival

GUWAHATI, JUNE 10 (IANS): The Assam government has requested all state governments in the country to include a chapter in the academic curriculum on Bir Lachit Barphukan, the 17th century war hero from Assam. Taking to Twitter, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said: “Assam Govt is committed to undo errors of the past and present our true history to the nation. We’ve written to all State Govts to include a chapter on Bir Lachit Barphukan.” Bar phukan was a celebrated General of the Ahom dynasty who defeated Aurangzeb’s army in the historic Saraighat battle and that defeat proved to be the final nail in the coffin of the expansionist policies of Mughals in northeast India. Assam is setting the Alaboi battle war memorial in Kamrup and constructing Lachit Maidan in Jorhat.

homes due to the construction of the facility. Dev alleged that Silchar Lok Sabha MP Rajdeep Roy had “misled” the members at an all-party meeting on the issue of the greenfield airport and it is “bizarre that over 30 lakh tea bushes have been cut to clear land”. The Rajya Sabha MP demanded a CBI inquiry into the matter “as this appears to be a case of largescale corruption”. Roy had said that this was not an eviction drive but only a land acquisition process which is going on for an important infrastructural project in Barak Valley that has been neglected for a long time.

It also participated in the 1st International Tribal Film Festival (ITFF) 2022 held in March in Arunachal Pradesh. It also entered the 17th International Film Festival Thrissur (25 Mar - 7 April 2022) Kerala for FIPRESCIIndia prize and the competition section of the Asian Select Category of the 27th Kolkata International Film Festival 2022 in April in Kolkata. ‘Greater Tipraland’ and ‘Vision Document’ synonymous: Sarkar

AGARTALA, JUN 11 (AGENCIES): Tripura leader of the opposition and CPIM politburo member Manik Sarkar on Saturday claimed that Pradyot Kishore Debbarman-led TIPRA’s demand of “Greater Tipraland” is an exactly identical approach to BJP’s “Vision Document” — a trap of inducement that has no possibilities of coming true in the future, reports East Mojo. “Greater Tipraland is almost similar to BJP’s vision document that comprised 299 pre-poll promises. Where is it today? Not a single promise made in the document was implemented and so is the future of Greater Tipraland demand,” said Sarkar while addressing a gathering organized by Tripura Upajati Gana Mukti Parishad at Kunjaban, Agartala. Thousands of people from far-flung tribal villages attended the mammoth public rally that started from the CPIM party headquarters. Putting forth an 11-point charter of demand, CPIM’s tribal wing Tripura Upajati Ganamukti Parishad called the rally jointly with its youth arm Tribal Youth Federation. The rally also assumes significance as it gave a clear

Manik Sarkar at a rally on Saturday.

indication that the Left still has a considerable grip in the tribal region despite the rise of TIPRA. In the recently-concluded Tribal Council elections, the Left that ruled the council for 15 years, winning three elections in a row, drew a blank as TIPRA swept the majority, defeating the BJP. So, the show of strength definitely bears a message that the Left is again trying to revive its stronghold ahead of the 2023 assembly elections. Sarkar also said that political parties like TIPRA are not exceptional in Tripura politics. “In 1967, TUJS (Tripura Upajati Juba Samity) was formed with almost

similar demands. Parties like IPFT, INPT and TIPRA are its descendents only. Have you ever seen TIPRA fighting for the fundamental problems of the tribal population? Neither TUJS that time raised its voice nor TIPRA is taking up any kind of political movement to ensure a secured future for the people,” said Sarkar. Slamming the ruling BJP, Sarkar said, “Majority of the people living in the villages are either directly or passively earning their living from the money the government spends in their area. Schemes like MGNREGA and other development works of various departments keeps the flow of cash

in the rural areas. The Left Front worked extensively to raise a system where the beneficiary gets money in their hands. Unfortunately, TIPRA and the BJP have ruined the system.” “All they know is to loot the rights of the public and fill their own coffers. People are spending sleepless nights in starvation. Such kind of news does not reach the city.” Sarkar also urged the GMP workers to play a proactive role in bringing their former party colleagues back who are distracted from the right path of democratic movement due to misleading slogans. “The substance of TIP-

RA’s slogan is to unite the tribal communities. Why? The genesis of Tripura’s democratic history is based on the unity and peaceful co-existence of Bengalis and Tribals. In one voice we have to raise our voice for the 125th constitutional amendment, security of work and food to all and restoration of democracy in the state”, he said adding: “Barley eight months are left. This government’s days are numbered in Tripura.” CPIM state secretary and president of Tripura Upajati Ganamukti Parishad Jitendra Chowdhury also trained his guns on TIPRA and said, “A regional party is demanding a constitutional solution to the problems being faced by tribal society. According to us, the constitutional solution is the 125th constitutional amendment Bill that has been put in the cold storage by the Modi government.” “A delegation of our party had met the Governor of Tripura and apprised him of our problems. Being the constitutional guardian of the state, we have urged him to take up the issue with the Center and put pressure on the state government to make sure that this Bill is passed as soon as possible,” he added.

TEZPUR, JUN 11 (PTI): Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Saturday claimed that land acquisition has to be completed by the state government before sending a formal proposal to the Centre for developing a greenfield airport. He said that Civil Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya M Scindia’s letter stating that no proposal has been received for a greenfield airport in Cachar district has been “wrongly understood by some people”. The chief minister told reporters here, “The state government has to complete the land acquisition before formally submitting the proposal for the greenfield airport”. Sarma said he had held discussions with the Union minister about setting up a greenfield airport at Silchar in the Cachar district. The details of the discussion are in the minutes of the meeting, he claimed. A controversy has arisen over the efforts by the Assam government to acquire land for setting up the airport with the Centre claiming that no such proposal has been received for the facility from the BJP-led dispensation in the northeastern state.

On Scindia’s reply to a letter by Trinamool Congress’ Rajya Sabha MP Sushmita Dev wherein he stated that till date the ministry has received ‘’no proposal to construct a greenfield airport in Cachar District of Assam’, Sarma claimed that it has not been properly understood. “How can the government submit a proposal for an airport on the land until it has acquired it?” he asked. The Union minister had said in his response that “However, if any such proposal from any Airport Developer or the state government is received, the same would be considered as per the Greenfield Airports Policy, 2008.” Greenfield airport means a new airport that is built from the scratch on a new location because the existing facility is unable to meet the projected traffic requirements. Sarma said the land acquisition process was on and it would be wrong to say that dwellers in this land were being “evicted’. “There is no eviction, that is a wrong way of putting it. It is just like people clearing land for any developmental project,” he said. The acquisition of

land at Doloo Tea Estate for the construction of the greenfield airport had led to protests by tea garden workers but the government had assured them that no worker would be evicted from his home and there would be no job cuts. The state Cabinet had earlier decided to pay a total sum of Rs 12.63 crore to 1,263 families of the workers of the Doloo Tea Estate as a goodwill gesture for their cooperation in the development of the airport. The state government had previously also announced a compensation of Rs 50 crore for the acquisition of land at Doloo, Lalbagh, and Mainagarh tea gardens for setting up the greenfield airport and had already released Rs 2.37 crore as the first installment. The Cachar district administration had on Friday issued a press statement maintaining that the state government was acquiring the land for the construction of the airport and the process was going on smoothly. It had stated that the state government and the Ministry of Civil Aviation were in constant touch for the last three years over the issue.

Anti-Prophet row: fresh violence reported Bengal: Fresh violence in Howrah’s Panchla; protesters clash with police, houses gutted

Police investigate at the site of violence, a day after clashes during protest against now-suspended BJP leaders remark on Prophet Muhammad, in Ranchi, Saturday. (PTI)

KOLKATA, JUN 11 (PTI): Fresh violence was reported in Panchla Bazaar area in West Bengal’s Howrah district on Saturday as protesters clashed with the police and several houses were set on fire, a senior officer said. Protesters pelted policemen with stones, injuring some of them, and also vandalised a BJP party office. Several fire tenders were pressed into service as police lobbed tear gas shells to disperse the protesters, the officer said, adding the situation was “under control” at the moment. “The agitators have

been dispersed. Some policemen have been injured in the stone-pelting. We are conducting a route march in the area. The situation is under control,” he said. Agitators resorted to stone-pelting, setting police vehicles on fire and damaging public property during violent protests and clashes with the law enforcers in the district. Internet services have been suspended across the district till June 13 to prevent the spread of rumours and prohibitory orders under Section 144 of CrPC imposed in several areas such

as Uluberia, Domjur and Panchla till June 15. BJP’s West Bengal unit president Sukanta Majumdar was arrested on Saturday afternoon when he was on the way to violence-hit Howrah district, police said. Majumdar, the MP of Balurghat in Uttar Dinajpur, was arrested near the toll plaza on Vidyasagar Setu, they said. “Mr Majumdar was trying to travel to Howrah where prohibitory orders under section 144 of the CrPC have been clamped. His visit could have created a law and order situation.

Naveen Jindal’s family leaves Delhi after death threat NEW DELHI, JUN 11 (IANS): The family of dismissed BJP leader Naveen Jindal has left Delhi following a death threat. Jindal was dismissed from the BJP after controversy erupted over his remark against Prophet Muhammad which was in support of suspended party BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma’s statement also against the Prophet. The dismissed leader also alleged that a few persons had also followed him few days ago when he went to meet someone. He informed the police about the same. The police has taken the matter seriously as there were reports doing rounds

on social media that unknown people allegedly did a recee of his house. “I am still living in Delhi. Out of fear my family has left the city. This is exodus,” Jindal said. A protest march has been called in Laxmi Nagar Chowk on Saturday evening. On Friday, protests erupted in different parts of the country against the remarks made by Sharma and Jindal. After this Akhand Bharat Morcha announced to carry out a protest march in favour of them. Sandeep Ahuja, the organiser, was detained by the police in this connection.

Hatemongers should be made an example of: Sachin Pilot JAIPUR, JUN 11 (PTI): Former deputy chief minister of Rajasthan Sachin Pilot on Saturday said those who spread hate in society should be made an example of with strict action taken against them. Reacting to the controversy over remarks of expelled BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma on Prophet Mohammad, Pilot said the central government was not bothered when people of the country demanded action against the spokesperson, but was prompt in doing so when foreign countries issued denunciations. “Action against such persons who try to spread poison in the society, spread hate and create the situation of confrontation should be taken so that an example can be set and such statements do not recur,” he told reporters in Dausa. Targeting the central government over rising inflation and unemployment, Pilot said that instead of celebrating the completion of eight years of rule, the government should delve into some introspection because every section in the

country is disturbed and suffering under its rule. “They can take votes by polarising the people, but today the youths, the farmers, every section, every person is troubled,” he said. “BJP wants the massacre of Kashmiri Pandits that is happening today. It doesn’t want discussion on rising unemployment and inflation and farmers’ problems. It only wants to debate religion, temple, and mosque. But the public is intelligent and will take the right decision when the time comes,” he said. Pilot also hit out at the BJP-ruled central government for not granting Central Project status to the Eastern Rajasthan Canal Project (ERCP) and challenged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to live up to his word. When asked about the state assembly elections to be held at the end of next year, he said, “The way party organisation is running in coordination with the government organisation, no one can stop the Congress from forming the government in Rajasthan again in 2023.”

IG rank and DIG rank officer each, six SP rank officers, 100 DSP rank officers besides two Rapid Action Force (RAF) battalions, have been deployed in sensitive areas of Ranchi city, IG (Operations) Amol V

Homkar told PTI. “Twelve policemen and 12 others have been injured in the violence. One policeman has sustained bullet injuries. The funeral of the two deceased will take place during the day. Internet services will remain suspended till the situation normalises. “An FIR has been registered and some people have been detained. We are keeping a strict vigil on the situation,” he said. UP police arrests 237 people LU C K N OW, J U N 1 1 (PTI): Uttar Pradesh police arrested 237 people from various districts in the state in connection with Friday’s violence during protests against the controversial remarks of nowsacked BJP functionaries on Prophet Mohammad, with Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath warning of “strictest” action against those attempting to vitiate the atmosphere. In Saharanpur and Prayagraj, police officials said action will be taken against those arrested under the stringent National Security Act (NSA). Among those arrested, 68 were held in Prayagraj and 50 in Hathras, Additional Director General of Police (Law and Order) Prashant Kumar said in a statement on Saturday. He said 55 people were arrested in Saharanpur, 28 in Ambedkarnagar, 25 in

Moradabad, eight in Firozabad, three is Aligarh. UP Chief Minister Adityanath, who has often spoken of how under his rule the state has been rid of frequent riots, issued a stern warning. “Strictest action will be taken against the antisocial elements involved in the chaotic efforts to spoil the atmosphere in various cities in the past few days,” he said while issuing directives to officials. “There is no place for such anti-social people in a civilised society. No innocent should be harassed, but not a single guilty should be spared,” he said. Remarks on Prophet: Pragya Thakur supports Nupur

Pragya Singh Thakur

BHOPAL, JUN 11 (PTI): Amid protests in parts of the country over the controversial remarks on Prophet Mohammad made by now suspended BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma, party’s Bhopal MP Pragya Singh Thakur has supported her, saying that if anybody insults Hindu deities, then such people would be told the “truth”. After Thakur’s comments made here on Friday, the opposition Congress in Madhya Pradesh sought a clarification from the BJP as it pointed out that while the party has suspended Sharma over her remarks, the Lok Sabha member has now supported her. Talking to reporters in the city, Thakur on Friday said, “This is true that there (Gyanvapi) was a temple of Lord Shiva. It is there and it will be there. Calling it a fountain is wrong. Our deities are sanatan. If you insult them, we will also tell the truth. You tell our truth and it will be accepted by us. But

why does it pain you when we tell the truth? This means somewhere history is dirty.” Asked about the threat calls that Sharma allegedly received following her remarks, Thakur said ‘vidharmis’ were always involved in such activities, as they had also killed Kamlesh Tiwari (a Hindu outfit leader in Lucknow) in 2019. “If someone talks, they threaten. They make, produce and direct movies on our deities. They have been abusing them (deities) by making (such) movies for a long time. There is a long communist history...India belongs to Hindus. Sanatan will continue to live and it is our responsibility,” she said. Replying to a question, she said, “Vidharmis give statements. How can we tolerate the insult of our gods and goddesses?” Reacting to Thakur’s statement, Madhya Pradesh Congress’s media department chairman K K Mishra said, “BJP has suspended Nupur Sharma and sought a public apology. But now, the BJP’s Lok Sabha member is issuing a statement in Sharma’s favour. BJP should clarify if Sharma’s statement was a planned conspiracy?” Mishra said that the BJP should also clarify if it would take action against Thakur for standing with the suspended leader.

Support for Nupur in Ahmedabad

AHMEDABAD, JUN 11 (IANS): A day after the city witnessed massive protests over suspended BJP leader Nupur Sharma’s “controversial” remarks on Prophet Muhammad, scores of people on Saturday gathered on Sarkhej Gandhinagar Highway in her support. They assembled at the ISKCON Cross Road to take out a rally in support of Sharma and “Hindu unity” but were prevented by police. The protestors produced a letter on the letter pad of ‘Sanatan Seva Sansthan’ for the rally but the police refused and detained a few of them. They argued that when demonstrations could take place in Dariapur and teen darwaza without permission then why couldn’t they. But the police convinced them and then released them. The crowd then dispersed. On Friday evening, demonstrations took place in the teen Darwaza area after the Jumma Namaz in Ahmedabad against the remarks.

Inciting violence

wo weeks ago, when two of the ruling BJP members, Nupur Sharma and Navin Jindal, used derogatory remarks against Prophet Muhammad, Indian Muslims protested the remarks and demanded action against them according to the law. The remarks were made on May 30, and Indian Muslims were agitating against the remarks demanding legal action against the BJP members. The remarks against Islam’s most revered prophet more often than not, attracts massive outcries and even fatwa against the offenders. It may be recalled that the French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo published a a caricature of Prophet Muhammad on its cover in 2011 and as a consequence, its office was bombed by terrorists. The magazine did not stop as it again published another caricature of the prophet in 2015. On January 7, 2015, two French-born brothers of Algerian descent, Saïd and Chérif Kouachi, stormed the offices of Charlie Hebdo, killed 11 people inside including the top editor and some of its leading cartoonists. They also killed a police officer on the street as they made their getaway. Several people were wounded. The attack on Charlie Hebdo was the first of a string of major Islamist attacks on Paris. The brothers identified themselves as belonging to Al Qaeda and left the magazine stating that they were “avenging the Prophet,’’ according to survivors of the attack. Two days later, a friend of theirs, Amedy Coulibaly, took hostages and killed four people at a kosher supermarket in Paris. After the anti-prophet remark on May 30 by two BJP spokespersons, an outfit identifying itself as Al Qaeda in the Subcontinent (AQIS) in a letter threatened suicide attacks in Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, Mumbai and Delhi. There are two aspects of the Al Qaeda threat-first the government of India has to take it very seriously and undertake massive anti-terror measures and secondly, those who made the anti-prophet remarks have to publicly tender their apologies. It would make all the difference if the prime minister Narendra Modi also personally issues a statement condemning the remarks and assure that the law of the land would prevail. Even the BJP as a party cannot merely distance itself since both the offenders were important party functionaries when the verbal and written statements were made. Thus, the BJP should also apologise on behalf of its members and also as a measure to end the chapter. Tendering a public apology is needed not only to assuage the hurt caused but also to prevent the matter from taking any unwanted turn. There is no logic nor benefit to social peace and harmony if some people feel they have a purpose to attack or slander another religion. Unfortunately, the spate of violent protests across the country against the two erring BJP members has given a handle to elements who are hell bent on disruption and destruction. Attacking gods and prophets of any religion should not only be condemned but result in stringent punishment on offenders. The incident should also be an eye opener for communal elements that their favourite past time of attacking other religions is counter productive as well as endangers the nation’s greater interest of social harmony and peace.

DailyDevotion Getting There

Come to Me… —Matthew 11:28

Where sin and sorrow stops, and the song of the saint starts. Do I really want to get there? I can right now. The questions that truly matter in life are remarkably few, and they are all answered by these words— “Come to Me.” Our Lord’s words are not, “Do this, or don’t do that,” but— “Come to me.” If I will simply come to Jesus, my real life will be brought into harmony with my real desires. I will actually cease from sin, and will find the song of the Lord beginning in my life. Have you ever come to Jesus? Look at the stubbornness of your heart. You would rather do anything than this one simple childlike thing— “Come to Me.” If you really want to experience ceasing from sin, you must come to Jesus. Jesus Christ makes Himself the test to determine your genuineness. Look how He used the word come. At the most unexpected moments in your life there is this whisper of the Lord— “Come to Me,” and you are immediately drawn to Him. Personal contact with Jesus changes everything. Be “foolish” enough to come and commit yourself to what He says. The attitude necessary for you to come to Him is one where your will has made the determination to let go of everything and deliberately commit it all to Him. “…and I will give you rest”— that is, “I will sustain you, causing you to stand firm.” He is not saying, “I will put you to bed, hold your hand, and sing you to sleep.” But, in essence, He is saying, “I will get you out of bed— out of your listlessness and exhaustion, and out of your condition of being half dead while you are still alive. I will penetrate you with the spirit of life, and you will be sustained by the perfection of vital activity.” Yet we become so weak and pitiful and talk about “suffering” the will of the Lord! Where is the majestic vitality and the power of the Son of God in that?

he Naga people told the British colonial Government of India in 1929 to “leave us alone”. Nagas have in effect been telling the postcolonial government of India since 1947 to leave us alone. We are here today in New Delhi rallying for two urgent things, Peace in the Naga homeland and an Honorable Solution to the Indo-Naga political problem, because Nagas have not been left alone to decide for ourselves what is in our best interest as a people. Our friends across India are probably tired of repeatedly hearing and reading about the Naga political issue for so long. Let me assure you that Nagas get that, because we are sick and tired of talking about and rallying endlessly – without results -- for an Honorable and Peaceful Solution of the Indo-Naga political problem. Generations of Nagas

to do was -- and we are still not prepared to do is -- surrender our human dignity and rights as a people. So our Naga elders stood up to defend our rights as an autonomous people when the British left in 1947. But the government of India took offense at the Nagas standing up for their rights. India sent in the army in 1954, so that by 1957, B. N. Mullik, the Indian Intelligence Bureau Chief under Prime Minister Nehru, reported that there were two divisions and thirty-five battalions fighting the Nagas, and “though there was nearly one security troop for every adult male Naga in the Naga Hills-Tuensang area, there never was a time when it could be claimed that the Naga guerrillas had been broken into submission.” That is why the following year, in 1958, the Indian government went to parliament and had the extra-judicial Armed

Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) passed, which allowed the armed forces to continue waging war against the Nagas under the protection of the AFSPA. That was then. What is now? After more than six decades, the Indian armed forces have mostly completed the job, yet the AFSPA remains in place and the Naga homeland continues to be increasingly militarized. The Indian army has established headquarters, training centers, companies, and camps throughout the Naga homeland. There are 50 such establishments in Nagaland and Manipur alone, which have a combined area of just 15,022 square miles. The army occupies some of the prime real estate areas in the two states. The region has been turned into a sprawling military training camp for the Indian Army. Naga people know this is unfair to us. Despite all this, the

On proxy teachers

t is open secret that most of the government school students are taught by proxy teachers in the rural areas. Keeping proxy teachers not only compromises quality education but also destroys the future of an innocent students. There are instances, where under matriculate and drop- out are kept as proxy teachers and the worst part is, the proxy teacher keeps another proxy for himself. Besides this, most of the proxy teachers are untrained and unqualified. It has direct effects on HSLC and HSSLC results of the Government Schools in the long run, as we can see even in the recently declared results. have suffered and bear the physical and psychological wounds of the unresolved seven-decade old conflict. So it is important for both sides to understand the main cause of the problem because only then can we find a solution. The reason for the longstanding conflict is simple. We must get the facts right. Nagas did not attack India or create problems for India. Nagas are not anti-India. What the Nagas have been doing, since the British left the subcontinent, is merely to stand up for our birthrights as human beings. Nagas wanted to safeguard our God-given autonomy and freedom in the lands of our birth, just like Indians and Burmese did in theirs. Nagas wanted no trouble with India or Myanmar. Nagas wanted to live in peace and in mutually beneficial relations with our neighbors in the region. But one thing our Naga elders were not prepared

fully convinced that there is no single proxy teachers in other districts) and detected 438 teachers keeping proxy. While appreciating the actions taken by the department against other defaulter groups, to our utter surprise, the department instead of taking stringent action for effective long-term corrective measures against the menace of keeping proxy teachers, ordered these groups of teachers to send photo to the email address (of course, we are living in the selfie era). The department is fully aware that we are living in a techno- savvy world, where, even videos can be re-edited and voice can be dubbed much better than the original one. This corrective measure seems to be child’s play and is unexpected from the concerned department, which always takes pride in providing quality education. It shows how serious the department is on keeping proxy by it’s cadres and it has

also exposed clearly that the department openly endorse keeping of proxy teachers. This might be the reason why keeping proxy teacher is stilll rampant in the government schools. Besides other facilities, the teacher is a very important component of the teaching- learning process to provide direct and reallife experiences to learners. Keeping proxy, not only deprives the child of his educational right but also destroys his future when he is just in his schooling age. It is high time that the department start taking serious action on those teachers, who are keeping proxy at the cost of children’s future if the department is really serious about ‘quality education’, which it proudly proclaims in every public platforms. Let’s walk the talk. Avina L. Dimapur avinaa290@gmail.com

Rising religious activism

here is no shortage of news on religious, communal, and race-based activism causing unrest in the world. Race-related biases are on the upswing in the US, and we hear about mass shootings, death and destruction prompted by pure hate. A few months ago, the Indian media were buzzing with news on sacrilege and the related horrors. Again, random acts of violence including mass shootings based on caste, colour, and religion make headlines these days. We hear now and then stories of ethnic cleansing, religious persecution, forced conversions, honour killing, and acts of terrorism incited by religious teachings daily. These are the extremes caused by fanatic feelings evoked by blind faith. When blinded by such pervasive passion people can commit unbelievable atrocities. Indeed, they are troubling thoughts. I remember receiving an evite to a religious heritage celebration. It had a strategically positioned mainline, “The world is one family” highlighting the virtues of Hinduism. It also asserted the words, “truth, love, and compassion” as part of the overall theme. No doubt, they are ideal concepts and action words, but unfortunately, we quite often forget them in our chaotic lives. Occasionally I get a different kind of email, mostly forwarded chain messages, conveying the frustrations of a particular religious sect or activist group. They look and read like genuine news articles. A deep dive reveals the real agenda behind such tactfully crafted messages. They are just fear-mongering and spiteful messages vying to drive a wedge between various religious factions. They are to propagate fears based on the unknowns or reemphasize the historical distrust or incite factional ill feelings. The founding block of every religion, I believe, is the supreme principle of “live and let live”. But many times, religious followers overlook the cardinal ideology and promote exact opposites for many reasons. Fringe groups from the alt-right and left come out of the shadows of the Internet to spread their agenda of hate and divisiveness utilizing readily available social media outlets. Their

Naga people hope that Government of India has clearly understood the nature of the Naga aspirations. This understanding should be the foundation for ending the conflict, because otherwise the present generation will pass on the same problem to the next generation and the next and so on. The Naga people are especially happy that Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, on 3rd August 2015, while signing the Framework Agreement, expressed his commitment to ending the conflict and restoring the dignity of the Naga people. Successive representative of the Indian government have expressed many times that the negotiating parties will hammer out an “inclusive and honorable” political solution for the Naga people. For the Naga people, our stand continues to be the same from start to now: commitment to our human dignity and rights

as a people. We expect an Honorable Solution will be based on the following: ● Respect for Naga historical and political rights. ● Official recognition of Naga Flag and the Constitution. ● Inclusive Solution – not part solution, but solution for all the Naga areas. ● Repeal of AFSPA and demilitarization of the region. ● Complete autonomy in governance over all the ancestral Naga Homeland. We have confidence that a just solution based on these commitments will restore Naga dignity and rights and will end the armed conflict and bring permanent peace in our lands, in the region, and in India and Myanmar. We look forward to a bright and peaceful future. Kuknalim! Global Naga Forum (GNF)

On metropolitan hegemony in the sphere of ideas

I

n the 1960s, when I was an undergraduate student, the standard of teaching in many institutions in Delhi and Calcutta was among the best in the world; but that did not make our education system of that time a truly worthy one. Our institutions only gave students in an extraordinarily lucid form what was ‘accepted knowledge’ in the advanced countries, or what I call the metropolis; they did not make students question this knowledge, and, even if some did, these institutions hardly provided an ambience for them to develop such questions into critical research work. Research generally happened abroad; and, since metropolitan institutions have their own areas of interest, their research topics usually belonged to these areas, which meant the imposition of a kind of conformism on Indian students enrolled there who, no doubt, often made brilliant technical contributions. Indian educational institutions, like those in the rest of the third world, did not become an alternative source of knowledge. Knowledge was what the metropolis told us. Metropolitan hegemony in the sphere of ideas continued, notwithstanding political independence in the third world. This hegemony, resulting in a colonization of third world minds, was particularly debilitating in the social sciences: in the natural sciences, it had primarily a psycho-sociological effect on third world students, of undermining their self-confidence; but in the social sciences, in addition, it also shaped the perception of what had happened in history. The worth of an education system in a country like ours is thus determined not so much by the quality of B.A. and M.A. teaching but by the quantity, quality and independence of the researchwork undertaken. An education system that makes its best products migrate to metropolitan universities for research, that has institutions which are only ‘feeder’ institutions for metropolitan universities, can hardly be called worthy; and by this criterion, our education system in the Sixties was woefully inadequate. In most universities those days, even in reputed departments, there would be perhaps one or two Ph.D theses per year; and that setting was not conducive for research. Matters improved in the Seventies. Several Central universities came up, including my own, Jawaharlal Nehru University, that focussed on research, generally shunning B.A. (but not M.A.) teaching. Likewise, the Indian Council of Social Science Research, in collaboration with state governments, set up centres all over the country with research as their focus. These centres have often been justly criticised for their primary devotion to research work, to the exclusion of teaching; but none can dispute the absolute essentiality of research work. An atmosphere thus got created for research within the country. It yielded rich dividends: in JNU, for instance, there was a steady stream of good quality doctoral dissertations, about half a dozen each year even in smaller departments. In modern Indian history, an alternative to the colonial narrative was developed; the colonial division of Indian history into Hindu, Muslim and British periods was ef-

fectively challenged by the alternative periodization into ancient, medieval and modern. In economics likewise, an alternative to the dominant narrative began to develop. This independence was confirmed by an ironic incident. A student from the London School of Economics, wishing to work on Keynesian economics, sought admission to our Ph.D. programme; when asked why he wanted to come to JNU to research on a topic that was not directly Indiarelated, his reply was interesting. His London supervisor had told him that the economics of Keynes and Kalecki (with its conclusion that capitalism was not a self-equilibrating system) was taught in Delhi, even as it had become unfashionable in the metropolis and dropped from syllabi! Despite myriad shortcomings, this was an admirable effort at intellectual decolonization, but it is being abandoned now, a process that started under the United Progressive Alliance government as an intellectual fall-out of neoliberalism. Besides, most of the political class in India had never understood the necessity or the significance of intellectual decolonization anyway. This was evident from its periodic lamentations that very few Indian universities found a place in the top hundred universities of the world as listed by several metropolitan agencies, little realizing that an obsession with such lists was itself the symptom of a colonized mind. The National Democratic Alliance government has carried this abandoning of intellectual decolonization much further since it combines the neoliberal preference for intellectual uniformity around the metropolitan narrative with the Hindutva fear of any intellectual independence in our universities; but without such independence, there can be no freedom from the hegemony of the metropolitan narrative. It has almost destroyed most of the outstanding centres that had been built up earlier, including JNU; and like its predecessor but to a far greater extent, it has favoured the privatization of higher education, which undermines intellectual decolonization. The argument against privatization is generally on two grounds: its exclusion of the poor, and its conversion of education into a commodity. An implication of such commoditization that is often missed, however, is the conversion of education into a domain where a uniform discourse prevails; and this necessarily means the discourse emanating from the metropolis. Privatization thus means an end to any attempt at intellectual decolonization. The National Education Policy of this government gives an official imprimatur to this effort. With its preference for homogenization of syllabi and course-contents between Indian universities and major metropolitan ones, it has, in effect, officially proclaimed that there is no such thing as colonization of the mind, even as by this measure it demonstrates precisely its submission to such colonization. objective is to create communal disharmony, religious intolerance, and mistrust. They are expecting to rekindle unknown fears hidden among the susceptible and unsuspected. Religious teachings played a great role in my upbringing and outlook. I try my best to see everyone without biases and labels. Even though I practise the religion on my terms yet my faith in God is solid and universal. Hinduism is practiced in many different ways all across the world with localized flavours without a uniform set of laws or covenants. It is not a restrictive religion; it provides a laissez-faire environment to practice whatever one believes in. As far as I know, my religion is an inclusive set of philosophies that respects the principles of other religions. It promotes a carefree practice, and practice without walls. However, outsiders see casteism, class-hierarchies, and other antiquated encumbrances, such as untouchability, and feudal mindset as archaic and unacceptable. Hinduism withstood many centuries of vicissitudes; survived assaults by zealots, conquerors, and other religions. I sincerely believe that it has the strength to stand up to the tests of times, whatever they may be, repeatedly. However Lately, I see a hastened resurgence of fundamentalism within the religion mainly voiced by a few self-professed renegades of the religion. They are stirring up certain right-wing beliefs with a bit of nationalistic sentiment to stir up confusion. It is not the typical back to basic fundamentalism, or a tit-for-tat engagement to counter the rising activism among the opposing sects, but rather an organized effort to promote extremist views within. These days, small pockets of activists are becoming more vociferous, and their actions threaten the core values of the religion. Their aggressive behaviour creates more negativity and animosity that helps the detractors to fan the flame of religious intolerance. Again, unfortunately, the rank and file of this pious religion are slowly being challenged by extreme views. Thus, the noble cause of Sanātana Dharma agonizes. EAM lauds life-changing govt schemes

BENGALURU, JUN 11 (PTI): External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Saturday said the nation is in the middle of a revolution with life changing dramatically and democratically due to life-transforming government schemes. “There is, today, a very different India in the making. The scale of beneficiaries of schemes taken up in the last eight years to connect people to the banking system, electricity, housing, potable water, replacing firewood in kitchen with LPG, and public health will make you understand that India is in the middle of a revolution with life changing dramatically, and this ‘revolution’ is happening democratically,” Jaishankar said addressing students at the Indian Institute of Management, Bangalore, on Atmanirbhar

Bharat. “The India you step into as you start off with your careers will be fundamentally different from the country how it was when you started your studies,” he explained. The External Affairs Minister highlighted that the countr y was going through a socio-economic change in its bid to create a social security net, which would raise the bottomline of the nation. Jaishankar said the

country would be different in terms of its skills, demand, entrepreneurial and business acumen due to the implementation of Atmanirbhar Bharat. According to him, the concept of Atmanirbhar Bharat means a better enabled-India, better fed, more healthy and more selfreliant and self-confident. The self-reliant India is, however, not trying to get more strength by building walls, but by engaging with the global community. The underpinning to Atmanirbhar Bharat is its people-centric policies, as the most important resource of a country is its people, Jaishankar said adding that raising the quality of human resources is one of the goals which would be a gamechanger. “If we have come up

short in achieving few of these goals in the past compared to other countries, it is not due to our practice of democracy. Moreover, the process of correction has now begun,” he was quoted as saying in a press release. He said the last-mile delivery is being made possible due to a enormous governance change and application of digital technology, which is significantly responsible for the scale of success of government schemes. Stating that the new India is destined for a greater place in the world, Jaishankar said effective realisation of sustainable goals is key to achieve it. He listed some of the tools to attain these goals such as physical infrastructure, urbanisation, smart cities, digital policies and innovation push.

No need to panic over rising Covid cases, no new variant of concern: Experts

NEW DELHI, JUN 11 (PTI): The increase in the number of COVID-19 cases in the country over the last few days should not be a cause for panic, health experts said on Saturday, highlighting that no new variant of concern has been found and the rise so far is limited to a few districts. They also pointed out towards non-adherence of Covid-appropriate behaviour and people being unenthusiastic about getting the booster dose, which possibly has increased the pool of population susceptible to the infection. Seventeen districts in the country, including seven in Kerala and five in Mizoram, are reporting a weekly Covid positivity rate of more than 10 per cent,

Dr N K Arora

while in 24 districts, including seven in Kerala and four each in Maharashtra and Mizoram, the weekly positivity rate is between five and 10 per cent, an official source said. “First of all, we have not found any new variant of concern. India now has BA.4 and BA.5, in addition to BA.2, which have a slightly higher transmissibility as compared to the other Omicron sub-lineages,” Dr

N K Arora, chairman of the National Technical Advisory Group on Immunisation (NTAGI), told PTI. In addition, there is increased mobility due to the summer holidays, easing of travel restrictions both nationally and internationally and full-fledged opening up of economic activities, because of which there has been a spread of the infection among vulnerable individuals. “There is another dimension to it and that is, the infection is limited to metros and big cities with a high population density. The important thing is that most of the people who are getting infected these days are immunised and have common cold and a mild influenza-like illness.

(From p-1) As rival parties analysed the outcome of the polls ahead of the Presidential elections, Rajasthan’s BJP legislator Shobharani Khushwaha, Congress’s Haryana MLA Kuldeep Bishnoi and JD(S) lawmaker from Karnataka Srinivas Gowda disturbed the calculations of their respective parties by cross-voting. Cracking the whip, the Congress expelled Bishnoi from all party positions after it alleged that he did not vote for the party candidate Ajay Maken and crossvoted in favour of Kartikeya Sharma, who was supported by the ruling BJP-JJP combine. Khushwaha, who voted for Congress nominee Pramod Tiwari, has been suspended by the BJP, pending an inquiry. Maharashtra’s ruling alliance of Shiv Sena, NCP and Congress faced a major setback with the opposition BJP, whose move of fielding a candidate for the sixth seat necessitated a contest after over two decades, registering an emphatic win, which is being attributed to 17 surplus votes of independent MLAs and those from smaller parties. Former MP Dhananjay Mahadik of the BJP defeated Shiv Sena’s Sanjay Pawar for the sixth seat. Political analysts said that pulling off a win this way required a deep understanding of the arithmetic of counting of the electoral college and preferential voting pattern. They also credited senior BJP leader Devendra Fadnavis for his micro-level planning and strategising after his refusal to allow the biennial elections to the Upper House of Parliament to take place without a fight. BJP’s stunning victory was also acknowledged by veteran politician and NCP chief Sharad Pawar, who said Fadnavis, a former chief minister, performed a “miracle” by turning the independent MLAs in favour of his party, which had sufficient number of votes only to ensure the victory of its two candidates. The Congress suffered a major setback in Haryana where besides Kartikeya Sharma, BJP’s Krishan Lal Panwar also won. Returning Officer R K Nandal said Panwar got 36 votes, while Sharma got 23 first preference votes and 6.6 votes transferred by the BJP, taking his tally to 29.6. It was a photo-finish as Maken got 29 votes, but lost on account of having failed to secure any second preference votes.

CSC threatens ‘indefinite’ stir

It said non-payment was further hindering the progress of DIET causing “untold hardship” to students to undergo training due to lack of infrastructures. RBI prioritising inflation over growth to maintain price levels: Official

KOLKATA, JUN 11 (PTI): The Reserve Bank of India is prioritising inflation over growth, which is manifested by the recent hikes in repo rate, an official of the central bank said on Friday. Speaking at an interactive session organised by the Merchants’ Chamber of Commerce and Industry here, he also said financial markets across asset classes and geographies witnessed unprecedented volatility during the past two years due to the COVID-19 pandemic. “Central banks across the globe will raise interest rates in future owing to much higher than expected inflation. This is a major risk, said Radha

Shyam Ratho, Executive Director, RBI. He said the RBI is giving priority to inflation over growth so that the level of price rise remains within targets without affecting growth. The apex bank had recently raised the interest rate by 50 basis points to a two-year high of 4.9 per cent. The rate hike came on the back of a 40 basispoint increase effected at an unscheduled meeting on May 4. Ratho said the bond market has become very volatile, too, which is a rare phenomenon. “This will have an impact on the domestic economy, he added. The RBI official said despite the Russia-Ukraine conflict disrupting the global

Putin compares himself to Peter the Great

L O N D O N, J U N 1 1 (AGENCIES): Vladimir Putin’s admiration for Peter the Great is well known but he now seems to have ideas of “Great”-ness himself. He has openly compared himself to the Russian tsar, equating Russia’s invasion of Ukraine today with Peter’s expansionist wars some three centuries ago, and making his strongest acknowledgment yet that his own war is a land grab. Putin’s apparent empire-building ambitions bode ill for Ukraine and have irked other neighbours, including Estonia, which called his comments “completely unacceptable.” Russia’s president was meeting young scientists and entrepreneurs when he made the remarks. Before talking IT and tech development he talked politics and power: the new battle he sees for geopolitical dominance. In that, he told his select audience that Peter the Great was a role model. “You might think he

was fighting with Sweden, seizing their lands,” Putin said, referring to the Northern Wars which Peter launched at the turn of the 18th Century as he forged a new Russian Empire. “But he seized nothing; he reclaimed it!” he said, arguing that Slavs had lived in the area for centuries. “It seems it has fallen to us, too, to reclaim and strengthen,” Putin concluded, with a near-smirk that left no doubt he was referring to Ukraine and his aims there. Peter’s rule, he suggested, was proof that

expanding Russia had strengthened it. Putin has taken to citing Russia’s past a lot lately, always carefully curated to suit his present-day cause. Several months before he attacked Ukraine, he produced a giant essay in which he essentially argued away the country’s historical right to exist. When Russia invaded its neighbour on 24 February, Putin falsely claimed it was a “special operation” limited to the eastern Donbas region to “de-Nazify” Ukraine and reduce the supposed threat to Russia. But even as he was uttering those words, his

troops were moving on Kyiv and bombing land even further west. More than 100 days later, a fifth of Ukrainian territory is under Russian military control, with puppet administrations who talk of referenda on joining Russia. And now Putin feels bold enough to admit that his “operation” is in fact an occupation. He also seems to believe the West will ultimately accept the reality his troops are fighting to create on the ground. At the time, “not one European country” recognised Russia’s claim to the land where Peter created St Petersburg as Russia’s bold new capital, Putin said. Now they all do. His comments have also rattled the Baltic countries. The Estonian foreign ministry summoned the Russian ambassador to condemn his reference to Peter the Great’s assault on Narva, now in Estonia, as Russia “reclaiming and strengthening” its territory.

Russia-Ukraine war could push 19mn into hunger: FAO ROME, JUN 11 (IANS): Russia’s ongoing war in Ukraine has a significant impact on the global food markets and could leave an additional 11 to 19 million people with chronic hunger, the UN’s Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO) warned. FAO spokesperson Boubaker Ben Belhassen told reporters that the two warring nations are major producers of agricultural commodities in the world, with a combined share of around 30 per cent of global wheat exports, reports Xinhua news agency. The countries impacted most by the conflict are in the north African region, he said. The spokesperson cited the FAO’s latest food outlook repor t, which pointed to a likely tightening of food commodity markets in 2022 due to the “soaring input prices, concerns about the weather, and increased market uncertainties”.

Pak PM Shehbaz and son get prearrest bail in money-laundering case

LAHORE, JUN 11 (PTI): A Pakistani court on Saturday granted pre-arrest bail to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and his son and Punjab Chief Minister Hamza Shehbaz in a multibillion rupees money laundering case, a major relief to the father-son duo after the Federal Investigation Agency took a U-turn and told the judge that their arrest was not required. Interestingly, the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) had submitted an interim investigation report against the premier and other suspects in the Rs 14 billion (USD 75 million) money laundering case last week and sought their arrest, arguing that “their custody is needed for further probe in the case as they have not joined the investigation and cooperated with investigators.” “On Saturday, taking completely an opposite stance, the FIA prosecutor told the court that the agency does not require

the arrest of the father and son in the investigation,” a court official told PTI. The court then confirmed the pre-arrest bail to the premier, his son and other suspects in the Rs 14 billion money laundering case against them. The court also directed them to submit bail bonds worth Rs 1 million each within seven days. Shehbaz and Hamza appeared before the Special Court (Central-I) of the FIA amid high security in

Lahore. Shehbaz said that the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) had already conducted an investigation into the charges the FIA is now probing. “Nothing was proved against me and my sons in the NAB case as it was reprimanded by the Supreme Court for failing to present any evidence,” he said, adding that the FIA had approached him twice when he was in NAB’s custody.

The virus becomes reactivated after laying dormant for years and causes inflammation and irritation on the facial nerves. VZV is harmless unless it is reactivated, and should this happen, new symptoms will appear. The virus can be reactivated when the immune system is weakened and less able to fight off infection. Stress is often a trigger,” according to the Daily Mail. “Treatment usually involves antiviral medication.” (Yahoo/Hola!)

dants and nitrates. These can boost your circulation. And they widen (dilate) your blood vessels and lower your blood pressure. That means that more oxygen and nutrients are delivered to your muscles and other tissues. And for active people, greater blood flow may bring along a performance boost, too. Garlic Garlic is good for more than keeping vampires away. It contains a sulfur compound called allicin that helps your blood vessels relax. Studies show that in people who eat a diet rich in garlic, blood flows more efficiently. That means the heart doesn’t have to work as hard to move blood throughout the body, which helps keep your blood pressure down. Walnuts Go nuts for nuts, especially walnuts. These crin-

kly-skinned nuts are rich in alpha-linolenic acid, a type of omega-3 fatty acid, which may help blood move smoothly. A study found that eating walnuts regularly for 8 weeks improved blood vessel health, helped those vessels stay elastic, and brought down blood pressure. Grapes They’ll help keep your arteries healthy and improve blood flow -all well tasting naturally sweet. A study found that the antioxidants in grapes encouraged blood vessels to relax and work more efficiently. Plus, grapes curb inflammatory and other molecules in the blood that could make blood sticky, which can get in the way of circulation. Turmeric The golden yellow spice is known for its antiinflammatory properties, thanks largely to curcumin, a compound found in turmeric. Studies suggest that curcumin may boost

LO N D O N, J U N 1 1 (AGENCIES): Stephen Curry scored 43 points for the Golden State Warriors as they beat the Boston Celtics 107-97 in game four to level the NBA Finals at 2-2. Boston led 94-90 with just over five minutes left but 10 consecutive points helped the Warriors to victory. I just want to win the game,” said Curry.

NEW DELHI, JUN 11 (IANS): India have created history on Saturday as they qualify for the FIFAe Nations Cup 2022. This is the first time that India will play at the esports showpiece event, which is set to be held in Copenhagen, Denmark this year, from July 27 to July 30. India defeated Korea Republic and Malaysia in the FIFAe Nations Series 2022 Playoffs to seal their qualification for the showpiece event. The journey for the Indian efootball team kicked-off in January 2021 when AIFF signed the participation agreement with FIFA for the FIFAe Nations Series 2021. India was among 60 countries to participate and was placed in the Middle East & Africa Zone. India finished 3rd in its zone, narrowly missing out on a place in the FIFAe

Nations Playoffs 2021. India ended the season with a global ranking of 22 and finished above heavyweights such as Italy, Argentina and Spain in the 2021 rankings. For the 2022 season, India was moved to Asia/Oceania region and was awarded a spot in the Play-Ins, which would provide direct qualification to the Playoffs (the last stage before the Nations Cup). During the play-ins, India played 32 games across 4 Match Weeks with 12 wins, 11 losses and 9 draws. Throughout the 4 Match

Weeks, India retained their place in Division 1. With this, India successfully qualified to the Playoffs by finishing second in the Consistency Points chart, moving one step closer to the FIFAe Nations Cup 2022. During this period, India also achieved its highest global ranking of 19. Going into the Playoffs, the goal for India was simple. Win 2 matches and seal your spot at the showpiece event and that is exactly what they have done, emphatically one might say.

Asian Cup Qualifiers: India beat Afghanistan 2-1

Afghanistan’s defenders try to stop Indian forward Sunil Chhetri during the AFC Asian Cup 2023 Qualifiers final round match in Kolkata, Saturday. (PTI)

KO L K ATA , J U N 1 1 (PTI): A stunning goal from talisman Sunil Chhetri and an injury-time strike from Sahal Abdul Samad powered India to a 2-1 victory over Afghanistan in the AFC Asian Cup Qualifiers here on Saturday.

The win helped India consolidate their position in the group as they seek to make a second straight appearance in the Asian Cup and fifth overall, having been knocked out in the group stage in the last edition in 2019.

Denied for 86 minutes, Chhetri put India ahead with a brilliant free-kick from just over 20 yards, taking only a couple of steps before unleashing his shot straight into the right corner of the net beating Afghanistan’s

goalkeeper. It was the Indian superstar’s 83rd goal in international football as he closed in on second-placed Argentine genius Lionel Messi among active players. Afghanistan equal-

ised within two minutes as Zubayr Amiri produced a sensational header in the 88th minute of the match. He was also helped by poor marking by the Indian defenders. The match seemed headed for a 1-1 stalemate but Samad had other ideas. After a fine pass from Ashique Kuruniyan, Samad made some room for himself to strike the ball past the Afghanistan goalkeeper, leaving the spectators at the Salt Lake Stadium in a state of frenzy. In a game where India created quite a few opportunities and showed their intent from the word go, Ashique emerged as one of the standout performers for the home team as he created several chances to keep Afghanistan defenders on their toes throughout the match. India dominated the match for most parts and ended as the deserving winners. The hosts were coming off a 2-0 win over Cambodia in the opener, while Afghanistan entered the match after losing to Hong Kong. India will play their final game of the qualifiers against Hong Kong on June 14.

Anand finishes third in Norway Chess classical tournament

STAVANGER (NORWAY), JUN 11 (IANS): I n d i a ’s V i s w a n a t h a n Anand showed he still had a lot of fight in him despite cutting back on his schedule as he finished third in the Norway Chess 2022, one of the strongest classical chess event in the last couple of years. In the final round on Friday night, Anand defeated Norway’s Aryan Tari, winning their minimatch in an Armageddon game after their classical encounter had ended in a draw. Anand had to win the final round in the classical game and hope that his rivals were held to draw to win the title. But he did not take the risk in the classical game and instead went for a quick draw. Anand finished third with 14.5 points behind World Champion Magnus Carlsen (16.5 points) and Shakhriyar Mamedyarov of Azerbaijan (15.5) points. In the final round, Carlsen got the better of Veselin Topalov of Bulgaria in the tiebreaker game while Mamedyarov was held to a draw by compatriot Taimour Radjabov as he emerged the winner in

Viswanathan Anand

the tiebreak. That meant Mamedyarov could not bridge the one-point gap that they had before the final round. After Topalov had held Carlsen, Mamedyarov had a chance of winning the title outright by winning the classical game against Radjabov. But he could not force victory and Carlsen won the Norway Chess title for the fifth time

in 10 years. In the final round on Friday, Anand agreed to a 22-move draw against Aryan Tari, with the five-time World Chess Champion’s hopes of the title essentially derailed by a one-move blunder the day before. He then defended superbly in the Armageddon game thus winning the match 1.5-1 as players get three points for winning the mini-match in the classical game and one each for a draw. However, it was a splendid performance for the Indian chess maestro as he won seven of his nine mini-matches, including a memorable win against Carlsen in the fifth round.

Praggnanandhaa wins title India’s Rameshbabu Praggnanandhaa won the title in the Norway Chess Open, the Group A event being held on the sidelines of the top tier classical event that involved Magnus Carlsen and Viswanathan Anand, finishing with 7.5 points from nine games. The 16-year-old Indian Grandmaster, who is on a high after finishing runners-up in the Chessable Masters on the Champions Chess Tour a few weeks back, defeated compatriot IM V Praneeth in the ninth and final round on Friday. Praggnanandhaa, who was the top seed in the event, enhanced his reputation as one of the top upcoming players as he added another feather to his crown.

NEW DELHI, JUN 11 (IANS): Tokyo Olympics bronze medallist Lovlina Borgohain and reigning world champion Nikhat Zareen lived up to the expectations and booked their places in the Indian boxing contingent for the 2022 Commonwealth Games by registering comprehensive victories on the final day of the trials here on Saturday. The three-day trials, held at the Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium, also saw Nitu (48kg) and Jaismine

(60kg) making their way into the four-member Indian wom’n’s team after clinching hard-fought victories in their respective finals. Producing dominating performances, Lovlina and Nikhat notched up identical 7-0 wins in their respective categories. While Lovlina defeated Pooja in the 70kg, Nikhat outclassed Minakshi in the 50kg category. In a thrilling first bout of the day, Nitu secured

an impressive come-frombehind 5-2 win against the 2019 World Championships silver medallist Manju Rani. Despite losing the first round, Nitu fought back well in a contest that saw both the boxers giving hard time to each other. Meanwhile, Jaismine also faced a tough challenge from the 2022 World Championships bronze medallist Parveen in the lightweight final before she managed to win by a 6-1 margin. Based on the results of the trials, the Boxing Federation of India (BFI) has selected a 12-member Indian boxing contingent, including eight male boxers, for the upcoming Birmingham Games, scheduled from July 28 to August 8. Shiva Thapa (63.5kg), Amit Panghal (51kg), Mohammad Hussamuddin (57kg), Rohit Tokas (67kg), Sumit (75kg), Ashish Kumar (80kg), Sanjeet (92kg) and Sagar (+92kg) had secured their spot’ in the men’s section after victories in the trials, held earlier this month.

PARIS, JUN 11 (REUTERS): Kylian Mbappe struck a late equaliser to help holder France salvage a 1-1 away draw against Austria as it kept alive its slim hopes of reaching the final four of the Nations League on Friday. Mbappe, who came on as a substitute after the break, found the back of the net with a shot into the top corner seven minutes from time to cancel out Andreas Weimann’s firsthalf opener. The world champion is bottom of Group 1 with two points from three games, four behind leader Denmark, which slumped to a 1-0 home defeat against Croatia. Second-placed Austria and third-placed Croatia have four points each. Mbappe had a great opportunity to give Les Bleus all three points with three minutes left, only for his attempt to rattle the crossbar. “I’m disappointed that we didn’t score more with all the chances we had,” said France coach Didier Deschamps.

France’s Kylian Mbappe, left, and Austria’s Nicolas Seiwald challenge for the ball during the UEFA Nations League in Vienna, Austria, Friday. (AP/PTI)

“Sometimes we score more goals with less opportunities but I’m not worried. I’ve had to do with minor injuries and fatigue.” After an initial 1-0 defeat against Denmark at home and a 1-1 draw in Croatia, Deschamps again reshuffled his team as he looked to rest some key players at the end of a long and demanding season.

He handed centre back Ibrahima Konate his first cap and wing back Boubacar Kamara his first start with Mbappe on the bench as Antoine Griezmann and Karim Benzema started up front. In a lively start, Les Bleus came close in the 18th minute when Griezmann’s free kick was deflected in the path of Ben-

zema, whose header was superbly stopped by Patrick Pentz. But Austria struck first, in the 37th minute, when Weimann tapped in from close range from Konrad Laimer’s cross at the end of a sharp counter attack. France had another good opportunity on the stroke of halftime, only

for Benzema’s curled shot to be parried away by the impeccable Pentz. The keeper was at it again early in the second half to deny Benjamin Pavard and Kingsley Coman as the visitors piled on the pressure. In the 63rd, Deschamps replaced Griezmann with Mbappe, who threatened immediately. Just as it seemed France had run out of energy and ideas, Mbappe collected a short pass from Christopher Nkunku before beating Pentz from inside the area with a clinical, brutal shot in the 83rd. He came close to doubling the tally four minutes later when Pentz deflected his attempt onto the bar after a one-two with Benzema. “That’s not what we came for but we’ll take that point and try to win on Monday,” said Mbappe. “I’m not 100 per cent fit but I’ll play if I have to. It’s the last match before the holidays so we can push it a little bit.” France next face Croatia at home on Monday.

Test of Pant’s captaincy as India plot comeback Vs SA C U T TAC K , J U N 1 1 (PTI): Accidental captain Rishabh Pant will expect an improved showing from the India bowlers as he plots a comeback against a marauding South Africa in the second T20I of the fivematch series on Sunday. Leading India for the first time ever, Pant had to swallow a bitter pill when David Miller and Rassie van der Dussen shot down an imposing 212 with utmost nonchalance to go up 1-0 in the series. The southpaw also had a forgettable Indian Premier League where he failed to lead Delhi Capitals to the playoffs. Seen as a future whiteball captain, Pant’s stakes have suddenly come down post-IPL and that has coincided with the resurgence of Hardik Pandya. Returning to full fitness, the pace bowling all-rounder took the IPL by storm not only by his form but by pulling off a coup as he led Gujarat Titans to the title in their debut season. Amid the growing chorus of ‘Hardik Pandya -- the next white-ball captain of India’, Pant will be

under scrutiny again as he masterminds a comeback. It may still be early days for Pant the leader, but his body language never stood out and he looked under pressure on his captaincy debut. Players of the Indian and South African cricket teams reached Odisha on Friday amid tight security ahead of their T20I game at the Barabati Stadium in Cuttack on June 12. He also made a debatable decision to underbowl the IPL Purple Cap winner Yuzvendra Chahal, fresh from claiming 27 wickets for runners-up Rajasthan Royals. At Kotla, the leggie

bowled only two full overs. As for Pandya, fresh after his historic success with GT, continued from where he left in the IPL. Pa n dya , w h o l a s t played for India in November last year in the 2021 T20 World Cup, dazzled with the bat with a 31 not out from 12 balls to prop the total past 200. But he failed to impress with the bowl and leaked 18 runs in his only over. The big headache for Pant would be the bowling department where he would have to make a call between Arshdeep Singh and pace gun Umran Malik.

While the batting looks in perfect shape, the new-look pace department looked flat in the series opener. Seniormost Bhuvneshwar Kumar did not look the same and leaked runs in the death overs, while Harshal Patel too was taken to cleaners. Yo u n g s t e r Ave s h Khan too failed to impress though he was the most economical among the trio. With the duo of Arshdeep and Malik trying hard to impress at the nets with their pace and accuracy it is likely that one among the duo may be well set for a debut on Saturday. It would not be an easy task as another slip-up would mean the Pant-led side would have the difficult task of winning three in a row. Fresh from their individual players’ success in the IPL, the Proteas are finding themselves at ‘home’. In the form of his life, Miller who scored 481 runs at 68.71 in the IPL to play a key role in GT’s triumph, has started in ominous fashion and looked unstoppable both against spin and pace at Kotla.

Q u i n t o n d e Ko c k failed to convert his start but the Lucknow Super Giants batter also scored a bagful of runs (508) in the IPL and he would look to make it count here. With Van der Dussen also striking it rich, the trio will form the batting backbone, while the likes of Kagiso Rabada and Anrich Nortje would look to stop the Indians. Manipur will have state-of-the-art sports infra before 2024: Pramanik

NEW DELHI, JUN 11 (IANS): Minister of State for Youth Affairs and Sports Nisith Pramanik paid a visit to the Sports Authority of Indian National Centre of Excellence (NCOE) Imphal on Saturday and praised Manipur for its rich sports culture. “From Manipur NCOE, we have got so many athletes who have dedicated their life for the progress of India. Athletes of Manipur like Mary Kom, Mirabai Chanu and many more have brought several medals for India. Irrespective of the

colour of the medals, be it Gold, Silver, or Bronze, the greater thing is the effort and hard work behind it,” said Pramanik. The minister also promised that several new initiatives are being planned for the State of Manipur in terms of development of sports. “We have been talking and discussing about making Manipur equipped with all necessary Sports infrastructure and facilities. Manipur is one of the States where state-of-the-art sports infrastructure is being con-

structed as soon as possible. Very soon, before 2024, it will built and functional,” he mentioned. “We will try to bring forth a solution for athletes from rural areas to have access to all the facilities here as well. Since, rains are a big issue in the Northeast States, we will come up with something to address that issue. The vision of Hon’ble Prime Minister to make India a sporting nation is shared by all of us and we are making every possible effort to bring Manipur into that arena,” the minister added.
