UP’s bulldozer action on rioters continue; Land encroachment plagues NHAK house of Prayagraj violence accused razed History of NHAK

Correspondent

KOHIMA, JUN 12 (NPN): Located in a campus (Naga Hospital Colony) measuring 12.70 acres above the NH 29, one of the oldest and premier healthcare institution in the state, the 117-year old Naga Hospital Au-thority Kohima (erstwhile Naga Hospital/ Civil Hospital Kohima) is the pride of Nagaland. The NHAK has one of the best and well maintained 30-bed ICU/CCU, including 10-bed SNCU, which can match any reputed medical college in the country. Encroachment: However, NHAK has been facing systematic encroachment over several decades when private buildings have come up near isolation wards and also from below the NH 29. A number of shops and pharmacies that have been constructed above the NH 29

‘Peoples Rally’ corrigendum

DIMAPUR, JUN 12 (NPN): Apropos the news item, the ‘Peoples Rally- A Call for Peace’ held in Delhi on Saturday, the organizing committee has clarified that the statement of Forum for Naga Reconciliation (FNR) should be read as “The experience of yesteryears has shown India’s inability to accept the Naga historical and political rights…….” and not as published. The committee has expressed regret for the inadvertent error.

are facing the main hospital complex. There rows of over 70 shops, pharmacies and shops selling coffins including some kutcha houses which are now directly across the patients ward in the hospital premises. These also include several local food stalls set up across the highway. Regrettably, the hospital does not have a boundary wall, which has made the job of encroachers easy. Due to the construction of many shops adjacent to

the hospital, parking of vehicles has be-come a problem even when ambulances on emergency, have to wait for traffic to clear before dropping patients to hospital. On enquiry, it was learnt negotiations were on between the Kohima district administration and the squatters. It may also be mentioned that the isolation ward for Under Trial Prisoners (UTPs) under NHAK, lies in dilapidated state with cracked walls and sinking floors due to subsidence.

Security personnel on duty for Under Trial Prisoners (UTPs) share the toilet with patients from isolation wards and posing a serious health hazard to the security personnel on duty. When Nagaland Post visited the ward meant for police on duty for UTPs, it was found that male security personnel had to share the same room having three beds, with their female police counterparts assigned duty for UTP female patients. PRAYAGRAJ, JUN 12 (AGENCIES/PTI): A day after the homes of two accused were razed in Uttar Pradesh’s Saharanpur, the Yogi government’s symbolic bulldozer on Sunday was moved to Prayagraj where authorities demolished the house of Javed Ahmad, alias Javed Pump, who has been identified as the main conspirator behind the violence that erupted in the city on June 10. Violence broke out in six districts of Uttar Pradesh after Friday prayers over the recent remarks on Prophet Muhammad by BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma who has since been suspended. Thirteen policemen were injured in the violence and there was largescale destruction of public and private property. Prayagraj Development Authority (PDA) on (Cont’d on p-8) Sunday demolished the

The hospital began as a 10-bedded dispensary established during 1905-06 when the then British government made a provision for basic health care at Kohima in the then Naga Hills. In due course, the dispensary was upgraded to 60 beds and named the Kohima Civil Hospital located around the site where the present Union Baptist Church and Kohima College stand today.

Political conundrum as reverse merger speculated Correspondent

KOHIMA, JUN 12 (NPN): After joining NDPP on April 29, some of the 21 NPF legislators are reportedly mulling on reverse thrust or going back to where they came from-- NPF. According to reliable sources within NPF, the rebels are unhappy with the positions they got after joining NDPP and what has also ticked their minds is whether they are assured of ticket if NDPP and BJP maintain the 40:20 seat sharing formula of 2018. When contacted, a senior NPF functionary admitted to Nagaland Post

that there were talks of some of the 21 rejoining NPF but re-admission would not be lock stock but examined case-wise and based on certain criteria. Since the NLA speaker had accepted the merger of the 21 NPF legislators, any move to rejoin NPF would require that they comprise of at least 2/3rd the total strength of the party in order to avert disqualification under the Tenth Schedule of the Anti Defection law. Since the then 21 NPF members are now NDPP legislators, they would at least require 28 (out of 42) to cause a split and join NPF. The political shenani-

gans also indicate that there is a possibility of some in NDPP joining with NPF. This has only heightened speculations that this has led some of the 21 former NPF legislators wanting to be the early birds. It was reported, that talks are being held unofficially on likely reverse merger of NDPP and NPF. It may be recalled that the NPF Working Committee on January 31 this year resolved to invite chief minister Neiphiu Rio with all NDPP legislators to join hands in order to effectively address the issues confronting the people at the present juncture. This was among the

three-point resolution adopted at the NPF Working Committee meeting, jointly signed by NPF president Dr. Shürhozelie Liezietsu and secretary general Achumbemo Kikon. Though most of the NDPP leaders are not in favour of this idea, some have admitted that talks were at some higher personal level only. The current political scenario in Nagaland revolves around chief minister Neiphiu Rio who is at the core and to some extent his long time colleague since Congress to NPF days, T.R. Zeliang also having some role, as also veteran Naga politician and NPF

president Dr. Shürhozelie Liezietsu. Rio was the chief architect in formation of NPF party in 2002 with the “Cock’ symbol. Rio joined Naga People’s Council (NPC) after quitting Congress in 2002 and renamed NPC as NPF with retention of ‘Cock’ symbol. Rio is the one who played a major role in forming NPF. All these have been on the air for sometime but as the state draws near to the 2023 election and with Rio seeking his fifth consecutive innings (thrice as NPF leader and in 2018 as NDPP leader), the million dollar question is whether there is/ are any challenger(s)?

house of Javed Ahmad, alias Pump, the alleged mastermind of Friday’s violence here, amid a heavy police deployment. A day earlier, the properties of two people accused of rioting were demolished in Saharanpur where stone-pelting had taken place as well. SP City (Saharanpur), Rajesh Kumar had said two accused who created ruckus have been identified through

CCTV footage as Muzammil and Abdul Vakir. Municipal corporation teams bulldozed their illegal properties, he said. In Prayagraj, a senior PDA official said, “Javed Ahmad’s house-- JK Ashiyana-- is located in the Kareli area of Prayagraj. Police and a JCB machine reached the Kareli police station around 10.30 a.m. and demolition commenced around 1 p.m.” (Cont’d on p-8)

ZLSU serves ultimatum on absentee Govt school HMs DIMAPUR, JUN 12 (NPN): Zeliang Students’ Union Nagaland (ZLSU) has warned of strict action against government school headmasters in Peren district remaining absent. Appreciating the government schools in Peren district for performing exceptionally well and being listed among the top three government schools with 52% pass percentage, ZLSU, however alleged that headmasters (HMs) of certain schools were irregular and rarely remained in station. It was no surprise that the schools with such irresponsible HMs were

among the worst performing schools in the district, the union added. Asserting that it would not tolerate such imprudent behaviour from any such negligent heads of schools, ZLSU served an ultimatum on them and teachers ignoring their duties to remain in station within seven days. It warned that failure to comply with the directive would lead to strict action against defaulters through the Directorate of School Education. ZLSU lauded the dedicated teachers for their tireless efforts in performing their duties.

Presidential polls: Rajnath, Nadda NPCC calls to defeat BJP nominee in Presidential polls to hold talks with allies, Opposition NEW DELHI, JUN 12 (AGENCIES): With presidential polls around the corner, BJP president JP Nadda and Union minister Rajnath Singh have started discussions with different political parties in an effort to arrive at a consensus on the choice for the top constitutional post. In a statement, the BJP said the two senior leaders will talk to both ruling NDA and opposition UPA constituents, besides other political parties as well as independent members. At present, JD(U), RLSP, Apna Dal, AIADMK, JJP, NPP,

NDPP, AGP are among the partners of BJP-led NDA. Opposition parties had accused BJP during the last presidential polls of reaching out to them at the last moment, after it had already finalised the choice of Ram Nath Kovind, who went on the become the president. The opposition had forced a contest by backing Meira Kumar, who lost to Kovind. The government as well as the opposition is yet to name any candidate for the Presidential polls which will be held on July 18. Meanwhile, the opposition parties have also begun

deliberations on the polls with AAP leader Sanjay Singh meeting NCP chief Sharad Pawar on Sunday. It is to be noted that ahead of the 2019 Lok Sabha polls, it was Pawar who had urged AAP and Congress to have an understanding in Delhi to counter the BJP. However, this did not materialise. On Saturday, West Bengal chief minister and TMC chief Mamata Baner jee wrote to 22 opposition chief ministers and leaders and invited them for a meeting on June 15 to hold discussions on the presidential elections.

DIMAPUR, JUN 12 (NPN): Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee (NPCC) said India required a socialist, secular and democratic President to protect the Constitution of India, to bridge the religious divide, to stop misuse of Central government agencies such as NIA, CBI, ED, ECI and judiciary as political tools and weapons and to protect the nation’s institutions. Ahead of the presidential election scheduled on July 18, NPCC president K Therie noted that all Christian chief ministers of States like Meghalaya, Mizoram and Nagaland were under NDA, while

Andhra Pradesh’s CM Jagan Mohan Reddy, a Christian, supported BJP issue-based. Pointing out that Christian States’ chief ministers had about 6% of the total value of votes and NDA had 48.80% and non-NDA 51.20%, he hoped that they would use their vote to tell BJP that Christians stood for peace, unity and progress. “We believe in non-violence and forgiveness and not hate or violence,” he stressed. According to the NPCC president, India had lost peace due to religious divide, while the economy was no way better than Sri Lanka. He said only agriculture was helping prevent

starvation in the country. He charged the BJP of sucking the citizens’ money through petroleum products, which was responsible for price hike on every material. Alleging that the “trio Gujarat dictatorship” ruled India, he said they used BJP members as lifeless chessboard pawns as inner democracy was unknown. Prime Minster Narendra Modi’s “Mann Ki Baat” was a one-way traffic that was meant only to hypnotise citizens to follow without questioning, he added. Mentioning that there was a serious need to check corruption, Therie alleged that BJP had printed several

lakhs of crores of rupees from demonetisation. The party claimed that more than 99% of old notes had returned, which was not true as lakhs of crores could not be returned for fear of income tax punishment. He accused BJP of raising Rafale jet price from Rs 681.7crore to Rs 1,638 crore and looted more than Rs 30,000 crore, while also selling national properties at low prices against high commissions. He alleged that the party demanded commission for every project sanctioned and constructed palatial office building at Delhi at a cost of Rs 700 crore within no time. (Cont’d on p-8)

Lotha Hoho clarifies on LBCA imbroglio Active Covid-19 cases increase to 44,513 DIMAPUR, JUN 12 (NPN): Lotha Hoho (LH) has clarified that it had not interfered in any court proceedings regarding Lotha Baptist Churches Association (LBCA). LH was responding to the Home department’s letter, asking all parties to maintain status quo in the matter regarding dissolution of LBCA administration and replacing it with an interim administration. The letter also noted that the steps taken by LH and consequent action, if any, at this juncture could be construed as interference in the Court proceedings and also considered as obstruction on the administration

of justice, as the matter was subjudice. Reacting to the State government’s claim in this regard, LH chairman Er Mhondamo Ovung and general secretary S Abenthung Ngullie said the case at Kohima Bench of Gauhati High Court was filed by legal cell of Wokha Town Baptist Church (WTBC) for possession of sector church buildings and immovable assets. It claimed that this review petition had nothing to do with it or LBCA. Further, LH said the criminal complaint registered in the court of judicial magistrate first class, Wokha, was ongoing between Rev Dr L Tsanso and

members of Modality Committee, WTBC, for defamation message posted by the latter in social media. It pointed out that the criminal complaint was against Tsanso and not against LBCA, adding that such a legal proceeding involving a church leader was a valid reason for disqualification/removal. This criminal complaint case had been misconstrued as though against LBCA. Mentioning that criminal case filed by Tsanso at the High Court against five members of Modality Committee, WTBC was between the two parties, LH also clarified that the case had nothing to do with it or LBCA

though it had been misconstrued as against LBCA. The hoho asked the State government to verify the listed cases from the courts to ascertain whether it had interfered in any court proceeding; and whether what the latter was doing was right. Inferring that the government had been misguided by the March 27, 2022 letter of DC Wokha, LH claimed that it knew the ground reality, what was good for the Lothas as a whole, who was doing right and who was doing wrong and the matter was also within Lotha community. Hence, it said the government should not intervene.

Karimganj Additional District Magistrate Rintu Chandra Boro banned all procession, rally, dharna, distribution of leaflets, banners and posters that may breach public peace and tranquillity. He also said that “In view of emerging situation on the law and order front aftermath the controversial statement by a leader”, protests have been seen

in many places across the country. “...there is an ample apprehension of breach of public peace and tranquility, loss of human life and property due to gathering for the aforementioned purpose in the district,” the order mentioned. On Saturday, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that the government is keeping a close watch on the law and order situation in the state following violence in several states over the controversial remarks against Prophet Mohammad. Protests erupted in

several parts of the country over controversial remarks by suspended BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma and expelled leader Naveen Jindal on Prophet Mohammad. Meanwhile, Assam State Jamiat Ulama (ASJU) on Sunday condemned the hated remarks on Prophet Mohammed by Sharma and Jindal. In a press statement, ASJU President Moulana Mustak Anfar demanded the BJP-led government to “Moreover, the government should strictly vigil the situation, so that nobody can destabilise the peace and integrity of the country, including Assam,” he added. Anfar also appealed to the people of Assam to maintain peace, integrity and brotherhood among the citizens of the state. Opposition Assam Congress and Assam Jatiya Parishad leaders have filed separate police complaints in the state against Sharma and Jindal for their remarks. Police are, however, yet to register any case on the basis of the complaints.

Assam channel hacked; live feed replaced with Pak flag, hymn for prophet

GUWAHATI, JUN 12 (AGENCIES): The live broadcast of a popular online news channel in Assam was swapped with the image of a Pakistani flag, a hymn for Prophet Muhammad and tickers reading ‘Respect Holy Prophet’ in a cyberattack this week that appeared linked to the outcry over remarks by former BJP spokespersons about the Prophet. A Pa k i s t a n - b a s e d hacking group ‘Revolution PK’ has been blamed for the cyberattack on the YouTube account of Time8, which is a digital news network based out of Assam with more than 7 million followers on different social media platforms and average monthly video views of over 600 million. On June 9, during a live news stream, Time8’s transmission was interrupted during a breaking news segment. Utpal Kanta, founder and managing editor of Time8 Digital News Network, said, “The selfclaimed Pakistani hacker group, Revolution PK, briefly hacked Time8 YouTube channel during the live stream and replaced the news broadcast with

the Pakistani flag and ran ‘Respect Holy Prophet’ tickers. This is an act of cyberterrorism, and we condemn the incident in the strongest words and also express our concern over the matter, which relates to national security.” “It was found that hackers not only intended to illegally express their religious views on the channel but also intended to defame the channel and India as they leaked the hacked part of videos on Twitter and Facebook and Pakistani Twitter users expressed their joy by tweeting in favour of Revolution PK and lauding them for hacking our channel TIME8,” Kanta said. Time8 said the network has alerted authorities and filed a complaint

with the Guwahati police. The complaint is currently being investigated. Former BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma and another leader, Naveen Kumar Jindal, had triggered a major backlash over their controversial comments last month about the Prophet that also angered several Muslim countries. While Ms Sharma was suspended for six months, Jindal was expelled by the BJP over the remarks. The Indian government said the comments, which came from two spokespersons of India’s ruling party, represented views of “fringe elements”. Protests and clashes have taken place in several cities across India against the remarks.

BJP sweeps Karbi Anglong Autonomous Tangkhul CSOs refutes statement by Mnp CM Council elections, wins all 26 seats Correspondent

G U WA H A T I , J U N 12 (AGENCIES): The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Sunday swept the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC) elections by winning all 26 seats, reports Times Now. BJP National VicePresident and party incharge of Assam Baijayant Jay Panda in a tweet said: “It’s a clean sweep for the @BJP4Assam in the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council by winning all 26 seats. Tremendous performance by the party under the guiding light of PM @narendramodi Ji and able leadership of @ himantabiswa Ji.” The Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council consists of 30 members, 26 of whom are elected and the four nominated with a view to provide representation to the minorities who constitute a considerable proportion of the total population of the subdivision. Earlier in April, the ruling party had recorded

Himanta Biswa Sarma and BJP candidates at an election rally for KAAC polls landslide win in Guwahati Municipal Corporation elections by winning 58 of 60 seats. Prime Minister Narendra Modi had said that it was a resounding mandate to BJP in Assam. “Thank you Guwahati! The people of this lovely city have given a resounding mandate to @ BJP4Assam to build on the agenda of development. They have also blessed the hardwork of the state government under CM @himantabiswa. My gratitude

to every BJP Karyakarta for the hardwork,” he said in a tweet. Last year, the BJP-led NDA came back to power for the second consecutive term by winning 75 of 126 seats with over 44 per cent vote share. The Congress, which was hoping to return to power, could manage to win just 50 seats with 43.68 per cent vote share. The party, however, increased its tally and vote share from 2016 when it was restricted to 26 seats.

IMPHAL, JUN 12: Manipur’s Tangkhul based CSOs on Sunday refuted a recent statement of chief minister N Biren Singh, terming it as unacceptable and sought immediate withdrawal “The callous and uninformed remarks of the Hon’ble Chief Minister of Manipur Shri N Biren Singh, as put out by the DIPR, “… not lay claims of ownership of hills as they belong to the mother nature and not to any particular community,” is unacceptable and should be withdrawn immediately,” the CSOs demanded in a joint statement. The joint statement was signed by presidents Tangkhul Naga Long, Tangkhul Shanao Long, Tangkhul Naga Wungnao Long, Tangkhul Katamnao Saklong and Tangkhul Mayar Ngala Long. It refuted chief minister N Biren Singh’s recent remark on land ownership in hill areas in Manipur. For the tribal people, land is their identity. This sacred connection with the

land has been practiced since time immemorial and was the only legacy passed down to us by our forefathers, the joint statement said. “We are indigenous to our land and thus are the sole owners of our land,” it said, adding that the British, having understood this right from the early days, created laws to honor the tribals’ relationship with their land. It demanded that this birthright must be respected. The joint statement was reacting to the frontpage reportage on ‘The People’s Chronicle’ of June 6, 2022, where two articles are juxtaposed - “COCOMI, UNC demand NRC, Population Commission”, and, “CM Biren resents claim of land ownership in hill areas”. It stated that in Clause (B) of Section 2 of the Protection of Manipur People Bill, 2015 (PMP Bill) passed by the Manipur Assembly on August 31, 2015, ‘Manipur People’ was defined as ‘persons of Manipur whose name are in the National Register of Citizens, 1951,

Census Report 1951 and Village Directory of 1951 and their descendants who have contributed to the collective social, cultural and economic life of Manipur’. By this definition, many people of the Hills would not qualify for inclusion in the NRC. Proper census was not maintained in the hills, least of all in 1951. Also, Sections 14A (1) inserted in 31/08/2015, after section 14 of the Principal MLR and LR Act of 1960, states: “Notwithstanding anything contained in this Act, Non-Manipur persons, firms, institutions or any other similar entities who intend to purchase any land in the state of Manipur shall submit an application to the deputy commissioner of the district concerned where the land to be purchased is situated for obtaining the prior approval of the state government before such purchase is made by him.” In other words, anyone (be they from ‘mainland India’ or the Hills of Manipur) can buy land in the Valley

(the Principal MLR and LR Act, 1960 does not extend to the Hills so Section 14 (1) does not apply to the Hills) provided he/she desirous of buying that land procured necessary approval from the state government. The hills of Manipur, on the other hand, does not permit any non-indigenous person to buy/acquire land - be they from the valley, ‘mainland India’ or tribals from other states of India. Article 371C guarantees us this right. The 2nd Schedule of the Manipur Legislative Assembly (Hill Areas Committee) Order, 1972 expressly puts land and land use of the hills under the exclusive purview of the Hill Areas Committee. All these measures have been put in place from the colonial times of the British through to the astute Central leadership of the Union of India,so that tribals in the hills are not alienated from their land. “This is not for greed or material requirements but to preserve a relationship which is hallowed,” the joint statement added.

prehended in the operation. ‘’This evening @assampolice seized 1480 kg ganja, packed in 74 small packets, from a goods carrier coming from a neighbouring state at Churaibari WP, Karimganj. AGARTALA, JUN 12 (PTI): Campaigning for the June 23 by-elections to four assembly seats in Tripura began on a low key but has gradually gained momentum with candidates holding rallies, taking out processions and making door-to-door visits to seek votes. Chief Minister Manik Saha, who is contesting assembly elections for the first time, is meeting voters at Town Bordowali constituency, while his rival and three-time MLA from the seat Asish Saha is also conducting door-to-door campaigning. Saha and Sudip Roy Barman have recently quit the BJP and joined the Congress. Roy Barman, who is contesting from Agartala, was the health minister in the BJP government but was dropped from the cabinet for “anti-party activities”. He had been the MLA of the state capital from 1998 till his resignation in February this year. Barman has coined a new slogan: “Atharote bhul, ar noy padma phool” (there was a mistake in 2018, now no more lotus). The BJP came to power in the state for the first time

in 2018 after defeating the Left Front. Assembly elections to the 60-member House in the northeastern state are likely to be held early next year. His rival Ashok Sinha of the BJP is also conducting door-to-door campaigning, taking out processions and addressing people in rallies. In Surma and Jubaraj n a g a r c o n s t i t u e n c i e s, CPI(M) candidates Anjan Das and Shailendra Nath have also chosen household visits as the preferred form of campaigning. In the last 42 years, the CPI(M) has lost these two constituencies only once – Jubarajnagar in 1988 and Surma in 2018. Trinamool Congress, which has no electoral presence in the state, is also contesting all the four seats and its candidates have started campaigning. AITC general secretary Abhishek Banerjee will arrive in Agartala on June 14 to participate in the party’s campaign, the party’s state unit in-charge Rajib Banerjee said. “Abhishek Banerjee will take part in a roadshow in support of party candidates in Agartala and Town Bordowali seats,” he said.

AIZAWL, JUN 12 (PTI): As many as 4,848 pigs and piglets have died in the outbreak of African Swine Fever (ASF) since its recurrence from February this year, according to data released by state Animal Husbandry and Veterinary department on Sunday. Thirty-nine pigs died on Sunday due to ASF, the data said. So far, 4,077 pigs have been culled to prevent further spread of ASF and 11 pigs were culled on Sunday, it said. The highly contagious pig disease has currently affected 68 villages and localities in nine out of 11 districts of the state, the data said. Earlier, state Animal Husbandry and Veterinary minister Dr K Beichhua had said that the state government would soon declare the ASF outbreak as a state disaster. He said farmers, who lost pigs due to ASF will be compensated for their losses once the outbreak is declared a disaster. The minister had also said that the Centre has already released funds to compensate the culled pigs

File photo of culling of pigs in Mizoram. and assistance would be released once the state government meets its matching share, which is 50 per cent of the fund sanctioned by the Centre. The outbreak of ASF was first reported at Lungsen village in south Mizoram’s Lunglei district near the Bangladesh border on March 21 last year. As many as 33,417 pigs had died due to the outbreak of ASF last year causing monetary losses to the tune of Rs 60.82 crore. A total of 10,910 pigs have also been culled to prevent further spread of

ASF the same year. Initially considered more or less contained as no pig death due to ASF was reported since December last year, the highly contagious pig disease resurfaced in February this year. Mizoram has already banned import of pigs and pork products from other states and countries on April 2. Mizoram shares interstate boundaries with Assam, Manipur and Tripura and international borders with Bangladesh in the west and Myanmar in the east.

Howrah, Adhikari had said he would move the court on Monday if he was stopped from visiting vandalised BJP offices in the district, which witnessed violent protests over controversial remarks on Prophet Mohammad by suspended BJP spokespersons. His assertion came after Kanthi Police Station issued a letter asking

him not to visit Howrah as prohibitory orders are clamped in several areas in the district. The letter, issued by the officer-in-charge of Kanthi Police Station, stated that concern over his security was the main reason for asking him not to visit parts of Howrah district where Section 144 of CrPC has been imposed. “I will visit our party offices in Howrah district that were ransacked. Police have asked me not to visit areas where Section 144 of CrPC has been imposed. But I will not violate prohibitory orders as I will go there alone. “If I am stopped by the police, I will move the court tomorrow (Monday). An

Tejas Mark-1A fighter

T h e Te j a s M a r k - 2 and the indigenous fifthgeneration fighter called the advanced medium combat aircraft (AMCA), with advanced stealth features as well as `supercruise’ capabilities, are still on the drawing board as of now. M e a n w h i l e, I n d i a has received the first lot of Rafale fighters with Indiaspecific enhancements to make them deadlier, even as indigenous Tejas jets are being deployed for a multination exercise abroad for the first time.

RANCHI, JUN 12 (PTI): The family members of two persons who succumbed to gunshot wounds during Friday’s protests here against controversial remarks on Prophet Mohammad, have claimed they were not a part of the procession that was taken out to condemn the comments. Two people identified as Mohammad Mudassir Kaifi and Mohammad Sahil died and over two dozen people were injured in protests and subsequent clashes that rocked the state capital on Friday over the remarks made by two suspended BJP functionaries against Prophet Mohammad, officials said. Shakib Ansari, the brother of Sahil, however, said he did not participate in Friday’s protest march.

IAF to acquire 114 fighter jets for Rs 1.5 lakh crore

NEW DELHI, JUN 12 (AGENCIES): The Indian Air Force is considering acquiring 114 fighter jets, out of which, 96 would be built in India, in a major p u s h t o t h e c o u n t r y ’s Aatmanirbhar Bharat scheme. The remaining 18 would be imported from the foreign vendor chosen for the project. “Recently, the Indian Air Force held meetings with the foreign vendors and asked them about the way they would carry out the Make in India project,” news agency ANI quoted sources as saying. According to the plan, after the initial 18 aircraft are imported, the next 36 aircraft would be manufactured within the country and the payments would be made partially in foreign currency and Indian currency. The last 60 aircraft would be the main responsibility of the Indian partner and the government would make payments only in Indian currency, sources said. In February last year, IAF ordered another 73 Tejas Mark-1A fighters, with 43 “improvements”, and 10 trainers for Rs 46,898 crore from HAL. They have to be delivered in the 2024-2028 timeframe to add to depleting IAF fighter squadrons, which are down to just 32 (each has 16-18 jets) when at least 42 are required for the requisite deterrence against the “collusive threat” from China and Pakistan.

AHMEDABAD, JUN 12 (PTI): The Congress only talked about removing poverty and its famous “Garibi Hatao” slogan failed to yield results but Prime Minister Narendra Modi brought about changes in the lives of the poor in the last eight years through various schemes, Union Home Minister Amit Shah said on Sunday. Referring to the Gujarat model of development, he also said that Modi’s efforts as the then chief minister ensured water sufficiency which played a crucial role in the development of the state. “In the Congress’ rule, government schemes remained on paper for years. Nagaland political -speak

A

ll 60 legislators in Nagaland are part of the second opposition-less government – United Democratic Alliance (UDA)- which was formed on September 18,2021 purportedly, in the interest of the Naga political issue. It may be recalled that the first opposition-less government in Nagaland under DANIII comprising of - NPF, BJP, Congress, JD(U), NCP and Independent MLAs- was formed in May 2015 with the same plea. Since 2003 the successive regional party-led elected governments have accorded Naga political issue as top agenda and speech was about securing solution that was inclusive, honourable and acceptable to all sections of Nagas. This exercise has been in motion especially since 2003 where all legislators resolved, in as many ways, on playing their role as facilitator for solution. This has also led to formation of the legislators’ forum and holding of consultations with tribal hohos, church and civil society members. Since 2003 and till date, none of these appear to have had the desired effect except keep the legislators centrestage. The legislators constituted the Joint Legislators’ Forum (JLF) with the assembly speaker as convenor in 2012. The JLF comprised of representatives of all ruling and opposition legislators. Nagaland government is not involved in the official parleys. In comparison, the Mizoram government under Lalthanhawla, was involved in the tri-partite negotiation which eventually led to signing of the Mizo Peace Accord in 1986. The Mizo political issue was finalised in two years whereas the Naga political issue is over 25 years and solution still hanging in mid air. NPF withdrew from JLF on August 19,2020 citing indifference by the ruling NDPP and went on to form its own Political Affairs Mission(PAM) with the same objective. JLF and PAM continued in the same style with consultative meetings which revealed a dichotomy of approach. Their separate visits to Delhi also made efforts more futile and eventually both reunited under a new name called core committee on Naga Political Issue with the chief minister as convenor and heads of various party legislatures as co-convenor. Perhaps Nagas have learnt that all these exercises are futile with no impact. The silence from the very government that claim to be mandated by people and acting for their interests may have caused a pang of conscience among legislators, when several of them have let cat out of the bag. They accused their own government of not telling the truth to the people on solution has been stalled. The assembly was informed about this aspect at the opening session by the then governor and twice by a legislator. Even in a meeting of an apex tribe body, a senior legislator also disclosed the reasons behind the delay and another leader saying the same in the media. Several organisations have also echoed the same sentiments on the political issue and also demanded that the state government come clear on the contents of the Framework Agreement. Perhaps in response, then NPF leader and now NDPP member- T.R.Zeliang - in his capacity as UDA chairman, has strongly urged upon all Naga leaders to refrain from commenting on Naga political issue. The point is, that after 24 years of negotiations and signing of two agreements, it is illogical to stifle the voices of leaders and prevent Nagas from being updated on what is going on. If the government has not problem, it is duty bound to inform people since it represents them.

DailyDevotion Getting There (2)

They said to Him, “Rabbi…where are You staying?” He said to them, “Come and see.” —John 1:38-39

Where our self-interest sleeps and the real interest is awakened. “They…remained with Him that day….” That is about all some of us ever do. We stay with Him a short time, only to wake up to our own realities of life. Our self-interest rises up and our abiding with Him is past. Yet there is no circumstance of life in which we cannot abide in Jesus. “You are Simon….You shall be called Cephas” (John 1:42). God writes our new name only on those places in our lives where He has erased our pride, self-sufficiency, and self-interest. Some of us have our new name written only in certain spots, like spiritual measles. And in those areas of our lives we look all right. When we are in our best spiritual mood, you would think we were the highest quality saints. But don’t dare look at us when we are not in that mood. A true disciple is one who has his new name written all over him— self-interest, pride, and selfsufficiency have been completely erased. Pride is the sin of making “self” our god. And some of us today do this, not like the Pharisee, but like the tax collector (see Luke 18:9-14). For you to say, “Oh, I’m no saint,” is acceptable by human standards of pride, but it is unconscious blasphemy against God. You defy God to make you a saint, as if to say, “I am too weak and hopeless and outside the reach of the atonement by the Cross of Christ.” Why aren’t you a saint? It is either that you do not want to be a saint, or that you do not believe that God can make you into one. You say it would be all right if God saved you and took you straight to heaven. That is exactly what He will do! And not only do we make our home with Him, but Jesus said of His Father and Himself, “…We will come to him and make Our home with him” (John 14:23). Put no conditions on your life— let Jesus be everything to you, and He will take you home with Him not only for a day, but for eternity.

Stagflation looms, rate hike not enough

T

he Monetary Policy of the RBI raising key policy interest rates by 0.5 percent to 4.9, the second in five weeks indicates further tightening and also raises the question how for the last over two years it overlooked the inflation control. It woke up at a critical juncture when the MPC itself hints at stagflationary trends – growth stagnation and continued price rises and the World Bank almost confirms it citing investors, bankers, and entrepreneurs discussing chances of recession. Was the RBI overlooking a ticking bomb or was it too accommodative under covid19 and other pressures? It has been speaking about inflationary trends since 2020 but apparently was being industry-friendly in keeping the rates low ignoring the concern for safeguarding the interest of the depositors and helping severe profiteering. Since most central banks were following the same policy, including the US, it escaped scrutiny. It has woken up late even as the US inflation that used to remain low around 2 percent has shot

up to 8.5 percent and has become a problem for President Joe Biden and the world economy. Meanwhile the IMF has been harping on it saying that since early 2022, both headline inflation – price of all goods and core inflation – food and energy were significantly above target in most advanced economies. It leaves it to central banks to manage. The RBI also needs to stress its own 2016 finding that infra expenses on roads and bridges have negative consequences. It may be pointed out that the MPC in July 2021 had also discussed stagflationary trends but desisted rate rise despite a dissent note on the price front and cut on taxes. Then RBI deputy governor Michael Patra accepting that inflation was prime concern of the RBI, added, “It is important to bring that down”. But till May, it did not act. The RBI has similarly ignored it in 2008 right after the global financial crisis or the Lehman Brothers meltdown. Then too it appeared accommodative before it resorted to the control mechanism and raised the rates. The large lenders

benefited immensely from it as they took huge credit at low rates. At this juncture the first signs of inflation were noticed in JanuaryMarch quarter 2020 when inflation touched 6 percent. As consumer inflation (CPI) touches 7.9 percent and wholesale (WPI) 15.1 percent, the highest level in three decades, it has remained complacent and even now it pegging at around 6.7 percent by end of 2022-23 is unreal. In July 2021, it predicted 2022 inflation to be at Shivaji 5.7 percent. The WPI went up from 10.7 percent in April 2021. It has reached alarming proportions but RBI speaks only of CPI. It is a bit surprising that despite noticing the malignant trends the RBI remained quiet till May 2022. Now it takes swift action to raise it by 0.9 percent between May 4 and June 8. Some more quick steps are likely to increase repo rates. It still presumes that India’s crude oil basket to remain at $ 105 though market prices are at around $ 120. It again is optimistic on growth to remain at 7.2 percent though World Bank

predicts global growth to come down to 2.9 percent from 5.7 percent in 2021. The RBI seems still cushy and not using the MPC power. Except in 2021, the dissent has not been there despite uncertainty over economic situation most poignantly pointed out by its Consumer Confidence Survey 2021. It revealed weakness in the bargaining powers of the working class and high prices squeezing the spending pattern. For quite some time low-cost borrowing Sarkar had been priority of the RBI despite it affecting the health of the banking sector and yielding low gains for the common man, senior citizens and women. Inflation harms the poor the most. It has to target bringing down CPI inflation to 4 percent but now it also warrants targeting run-away WPI, a trend that needs deeper study of the changing market dynamics. High WPI accompanied by yet another high CPI means the actual inflation level is around 20 percent. No wonder the MPC considers stagflation now a greater possibility as does the WB. In the prevail-

ing situation it should have come out with detailed reports on the market functioning in India. It has a contrast. While only high profits are being cornered by select companies, most others and small sector in particular are going into severe losses. The RBI has to suggest the corrective methods because these few companies are cornering the benefits and it has to find out whether the market is getting skewed or not. In its latest global economic forecast, the WB says even something worse is possible as growth is expected to slow down to 2.9 percent from the 5.7 percent 2021. It is dismayed by growing income gaps, thawing of poverty alleviation measures and hurt by the war induced soaring fuel prices and disruption of international trade. In such situation, the RBI looks more optimistic in its growth forecast. Monetary tightening has its aftermath too. It can ripple out faster and act as a drag on private consumption that is already at a low for over a year. It has to listen to WB president David Malpass, who says, “For many coun-

tries, recession will be hard to avoid”. The WB is firm that economic slowdown might be severe by the end of 2022 as Ukraine war hit supplies and trade networks to cause food prices to rise alarmingly. It says that if US Federal Reserve’ strategy at rate hike interest rates go too high the economy could risk backsliding into a contraction and recession.” It predicts “several years of above-average inflation and below average growth with potentially destabilizing consequences for low and middle income economies. It’s a phenomenon - stagflation - that the world has not seen since the 1970s”. The warning is severe and grim. The RBI must take a note of it to attune Indian economy to a low price regime and impress upon the government to desist from investing on infrastructure like roads, railways, cosmetic architecture that are adding to severe inflation, drain of the resources and adding to the woes of the poor. It has to be tough but the flip side would be the higher rates to help the poor hedging savings and help in future growth.

Deal with religious intolerance with an iron fist Naga Mothers’ Association lends

‘C

urfew has been imposed and the Army has been called in to conduct a flag march in Bhaderwah town of Jammu and Kashmir’s Doda district over attempts by some elements to create communal tension,’ reported a local news outlet on June 9, 2022. The same day the same news agency reported that a record number of tourists had visited Kashmir in recent months. To be exact a total of 8 million tourists have come to Kashmir since January 2022 breaking a 20-year record! This is more than 50,000 tourists a day. No wonder they are calling it the ‘golden period of tourism’ in Kashmir. Now consider this. Indian Border Security Force fired upon a suspected Pakistani drone flying at an altitude of about 300 meters along the International Border in Jammu district in the early hours of Thursday. In recent days’ Pakistani terror outfits have been trying hard to smuggle weapons, ammunition and explosives through drones. Several Kashmiri Pandits and nationalist Muslims and an artist have been targeted and killed by jihadi individuals sponsored by outfits such as the LeT. The Amranath Yatra is about to begin and will last for two months. The valley is enjoying peace and quiet. Pakistan has failed to instigate an uprising or even any significant protest on communal basis in Kashmir since 2019. Then, we have the Nupur Sharma scandal that was engineered by a guy called Zubair. 10 days after the actual debate that took place on an Indian English TV channel the Muslim clergy and religious demagogues began trolling her on social media and an allegedly pre-planned riot was let loose

I

in Kanpur. Pakistan calls in the Indian ambassador in Islamabad and registers a protest on the comments about Prophet Muhammed made by BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma. Three Muslim countries with close ties to Pakistan issue statements in condemnation of the so-called blasphemous comments made by Sharma. And all hell breaks out in Kashmir resulting in a curfew in Kashmir. Ever since the abrogation of the Article 370 and 35A on August 5, 2019, Pakistan and its ‘political ambassadors’ in Kashmir have predicted a blood bath that never took place. The people of Kashmir have enjoyed freedom to go around their daily business without the fear of stone pelting or getting caught up in cross fire between the terrorists and the security forces. A frustrated Pakistani military establishment had negotiated a ceasefire with India at the Line of Control (LoC) on February 25, 2021. Now, we know that it was done to relieve the Pakistan Army of extra engagement at the LoC to concentrate on Afghanistan. After all the Doha negotiations that took place in December 2020 were a maneuver on Pakistan’s part to bring the Taliban back into power. Hence, attaining peace was not the motive behind the Doha talks. On August 15, the Taliban entered Kabul and since then 10,000 terrorist jihadist have been transported from the battle fronts in Afghanistan to Pakistani occupied Jammu Kashmir. Three months ago in Rawalakot in PoJK in a press conference Freedom Brigade 313 was launched with a target of recruiting another 10,000 jihadists to fight alongside the Pakistan Army

in Kashmir. Launch pads were reactivated in Titrinote, Neelum and Muzaffarabad in the PoJK. And then came the spring offensive. Regular attempts of infiltration into Kashmir were revived and so was the strategy to use transport drones to smuggle weapons, ammunition and sticky bombs as well as narcotics. This was followed by the target killings of Kashmiri Pandits and Nationalist Muslims. Now, comments made by Nupur Sharma during a TV debate with a Muslim cleric is being systematically exploited to generate communal violence in Kashmir and in India. The strategy to execute the genocide of the Hindus is not new to us as it goes back at least 8 centuries when the Arabs invaded Sindh and killed the Hindu Raja Dahir. In 1947 in Jammu and Kashmir districts of Muzaffarabad, Baramulla, Poonch and Mirpur around 100,000 Hindu and Sikh natives were killed. In 1990 the Kashmiri Pandits faced another spell of genocide and exodus. From Afghanistan to Bangladesh persecution of the Hindu is common knowledge. In India in 11 out of 28 states and Union Territories the Hindu is in minority. The onslaught of Jihad in the name of Ghazwa-e-Hind has to be brought to a halt. Terror is being generated in order to instill fear in the Hindu population. This should not be tolerated any longer. And the way to achieve this to deal with religious intolerance with an iron fist. Dr Amjad Ayub Mirza The writer is an author and human rights activist from Mirpur in PoJK. He currently lives in exile in the UK.

Relentless Corruption

n International’s Corruption Perceptions Index, India was recently placed 86th out of 180 countries. Although the country’s score has remained unchanged for the previous two decades, some of the measures that could aid in the fight against corruption are being weakened. Concerns about the country’s democratic status are growing, as essential liberties and institutional control mechanisms getting expiring. Journalists and activists are especially vulnerable to police, political militants, criminal gangs, and corrupt government officials. Threats are made directly to anti-government civil society organisations. Some strict regulations must be implemented in India so that ministers and public workers at the central and state levels, (as well as their blood relatives), can declare their movable and immovable assets on an online portal for public scrutiny. In addition, precautions should be taken to guarantee that their family members do not interfere with government activities. If a minister accepts gifts in any manner, it should be considered government

property. The central and state ministers should follow stringent code of conduct that includes declaring shares, debentures, cash, jewellery, and their commercial contacts in addition to the stipulations of the Constitution of India and the People’s Representation Act 1951. Ministers should also relinquish ownership, management, and control of the business. Ministers should keep a safe distance from commercial companies that produce materials or give services to public sector organisations, or that rely on government licences, permits, quotas, or leases, among other things. To establish transparency and check corruption, the judiciary must intervene in tenders, particularly those worth millions of rupees. The Centre should pass the Public Procurement Bill, which will help to reduce corruption and increase transparency in the country to some extent otherwise corruption remains relentless. solidarity to Call for peace Rally

T

he Naga Mothers’ Association conveys our solidarity to the Call for peace Rally being organized by the Naga Students Federation and the Naga Students Union Delhi. We thank our Naga students for taking the initiative in drawing the attention of the Government of India on the need for peace in our Naga Homeland. As Naga Mothers and Naga women, we have worked for decades as peacemakers and peace keepers, because we believe in a future for our children and the younger generation, to live in peace. The Naga struggle in our Homeland has taken its toll on all Naga families, as we have witnessed militarization in the Naga hills under the draconian Armed Forces Special Powers Act since 1958.We have lost sons and brothers, killed by the Indian armed forces, daughters and sisters raped and killed in our villages and homes .Hundreds of our villages have been razed to the ground in these decades of militarization in our Naga homeland under the Indian Armed Forces. We call for justice on the numerous massacres by the Indian armed forces, be it ,the Matikhru beheading of village leaders by the Indian army, Oinam rapes and massacres , Kohima bomb blasts, Mokokchung shootings and arson, Wuzu Killing of children and Pang-

sha killings , Oting and Mon killing of civilians by the Indian armed forces last December 2021,civilian killings in Arunachal Pradesh Naga areas this year. Peace must come with justice for all such incidents, which can never be forgotten by us Naga Mothers. The long drawn out peace process has also witnessed killings and bloodshed amongst our own armed brothers and the NMA remains committed that we must not start another war in the tactical delays by the Government of India. Today, we call upon the Government of India to honour the peace negotiations and bring about sustainable peace in our Naga homeland by an honourable, acceptable and inclusive solution, to the Naga people at the earliest. The Naga mothers calls for recognition of our Naga flag, under which thousands have marched and laid down their lives and a working Constitution that will protect our Naga identity of social , cultural traditions and practices, basic Naga laws ,our land and resources. The NMA reiterate our demand for the repeal of the Armed Forces Special Powers Act, which has violated every form of human rights in our Naga homeland. ince the sovereign Naga people (our people) democratically constituted the Naga National Council (NNC) on February 2, 1946 at Wokha Village to safeguard the sovereign birth right of our people as a Nation, the Naga National Council (NNC), with the vow and assurance of Mahatma Gandhi on 19th July, 1947 at Bhangi Colony in New Delhi, formally declared the age-old Naga Independence on 14th August, 1947 one day ahead before India was set free by the British on 156 August, 1947 and on the same day NNC informed India by Telegram, and cabled to HMG and UNO for information and record. Thus we have celebrated this auspicious day of our Nation every year without any hindrance by the grace of God since 1947 in existence of our Nation despite all odds and we are now going to commemorate the Platinum Jubilee of our Independence declaration (146 August, 1947 —14th August, 2022). Therefore, the Ministry of Rali Wali (Information and Publicity) of the Federal Government of Nagaland (FGN) on behalf of the NNC/ FGN sincerely calls upon all fellow Nagas to commemorate this great day of our Nation together by extending co-operation each other and make this Jubilee a grand success as it may be a historic wrestling between the Naga Nation and India, the invader. India achieved new milestones in ‘gram swaraj’, says PM Modi

NEW DELHI, JUN 12 (PTI): Asserting that India has attained new milestones in ‘gram swaraj’ and democratic empowerment of panchayats in the last eight years, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has urged sarpanches to make efforts for saturation coverage of welfare schemes, conserving water and making the upcoming Yoga Day special. In a letter to sarpanches (village heads) days after his government marked its eighth anniversary, Modi listed several issues on which he sought their support while appreciating their contribution in the last eight years. He asked them to work to make the eighth International Yoga Day, which falls on June 21, special and to encourage everyone in their village to join the exercise. They can select an ancient or tourist place or

a place near a water body in their area for everyone in the village to do yoga on the day, he said, urging them to share pictures to inspire others. People all over the world observe the day enthusiastically, and pictures of them doing yoga in different corners, from skies to the Himalayas and sea, in the preceding years have made Indians proud, the prime minister has written. Noting that “Yoga for humanity” is the theme of the Yoga Day, he said the COVID-19 pandemic has made people realise the importance of health and

how big a role yoga can play in this. Emphasising on the need for conserving every drop of water, Modi asked village heads to continue making collective efforts in villages in this regard while pitching for rain water harvesting measures. To achieve this goal, the country has resolved to make 75 ‘amrit sarovars’, a reference to water bodies, in every district in the 75th anniversary of its Independence, he said. With the prime minister often stressing on the need for saturation coverage of welfare measures to help every eligible beneficiary, he told sarpanches that they will have a big role in this and asked them to speed up their efforts to ensure that no one is left out from the benefits of government schemes. “When every eligible person in the village gets full benefits of schemes,

then the village as well as the entire country will prosper,” he wrote. Modi also asked them to continue with the efforts for ‘Swachh Bharat’ (clean India) with all seriousness. On the issue of ‘gram swaraj’ (village self-rule) and ‘garib kalyan’ (poor’s welfare), he said, “New milestones have been achieved towards gram swaraj and democratic empowerment of panchayats.” India has around 2.5 lakh panchayats. According to the 2011 census, nearly 69 per cent of the population lives in rural India. The prime minister also noted that the WHO had recently felicitated ASHA (Accredited Social Health Activist), workers, and said it is a matter of pride for villages. In the letter, the prime minister also wished farmers a good monsoon season.

Police of 4-5 states working on Moosewala murder case NAGPUR, JUN 12 (PTI): Maharashtra Home Minister Dilip Walse Patil on Sunday police teams from four-five states were working together on the case of murder of popular singer and Congress leader Sidhu Moosewala in Punjab last mont,h and the Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) was also keeping an eye on it. The Delhi Police recently said gangster Lawrence Bishnoi was the mastermind behind the murder and that they had identified six shooters allegedly involved in the killing of Moosewala. The singer’s death was an organised and brazen killing, the Delhi police had said. Investigators had also revealed that Mahakal alias Siddhesh Kamble, arrested by Pune rural police in Maharashtra recently, knew that Moosewala was going to be murdered, and was in touch with gangster Vikram Brar a week before the killing. Kamble is an alleged member of the Lawrence

Dilip Walse Patil

Bishnoi gang, which is said to be behind Moosewala’s murder. Brar is a close aide of gangster Lawrence Bishnoi, who is currently in the Delhi Police’s custody. On Sunday, when reporters here asked Walse Patil about the latest update in the Moosewala murder case, the minister said police teams from four to five states were working together on the case. “However, I can’t publicly comment on the ongoing inquiry because it is a sensitive issue. The Maharashtra Police and the state ATS are keeping a watch on it,” the minister said.

3 LeT terrorists killed in overnight encounter in J&K

S R I NAG A R , J U N 1 2 (PTI): Three Lashkar-eTaiba (LeT) terrorists were killed in an overnight encounter with security forces in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pulwama district, police said on Sunday. With this, the number of terrorists killed in the valley so far this year has risen to 99. A police spokesperson said acting on specific information regarding the presence of terrorists in Pulwama’s Drabgam village, a cordon-and-search operation was launched by the security forces in the area on Saturday. As the security personnel approached the suspected spot, the terrorists hiding there fired indiscriminately upon them, which was retaliated effectively, leading to an encounter, he added. In the ensuing gunbattle, three local terrorists of proscribed outfit LeT were killed and their bodies retrieved from the site of the encounter, the spokesperson said. He identified the slain terrorists as Junaid Ahmad Sheergojri of Gadoora in Pulwama, Fazil Nazir Bhat of Drabgam in Pulwama and Irfan Ahmad Malik of corded 11,163 cases in a day. Arabal Nikas in Pulwama. Asked about protests by Muslim community members in parts of Maharashtra on Friday over the alleged objectionable remarks against Prophet Mohammad by suspended BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma and her former party colleague Naveen Jindal, the minister said the protests were help in a peaceful manner. ‘No untoward incident took place anywhere in the state. Police took relevant action where rules were broken, but such numbers were very less,” he said. Notably, an affiliate of terror outfit Al-Qaeda recently issued a letter warning of suicide bombings in some Indian cities and states to avenge the insult to the Prophet. Asked if the police department will review the security of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) headquarters in Nagpur in the wake of such threats, Walse Patil said he will conduct a review on this with police officials here on Sunday.

has already geared up for a possible fourth wave, with the civic body Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) urging residents to wear a mask and follow all Covid safety rules. The civic body has put all labs and hospitals on alert and has ramped up testing. Currently, over 90 per cent of

Mumbai’s cases are asymptomatic and hospitalisations remain low. The 1,000 per cent rise in daily cases is a cause of concern as Mumbai has been a major Covid-affected city since 2020, recording COVID-19 numbers that are usually higher than rest of the country. In January

2022, during the Omicron wave, the city registered more active Covid cases (91,000+) than the peak during the 2nd wave in 2021. Mumbai recorded over 20,000 Covid cases on January 6 this year, which was the highest daily tally since April 4, 2021, when it re-

(From p-1) However, during the Battle of Kohima from April to June 1944 the dispensary was badly damaged and was shifted to the Mission compound building below Kohima village on August 9, 1944. The number of beds at the new site was reduced to 50 due to shortage in funds and materials. The last British deputy commissioner of Naga Hills, Sir Charles Pausey, who was in-charge of civil administration of the district and ruing the months when the Battle of Kohima raged, after inspect-ing the hospital wrote on December 13, 1944: “The Kohima Civil Hospital has now been established in the Mission Building where tarpaulins are used to cover riddled CI sheets. These Cl sheets should be plugged or replaced as soon as possible, and the tarpaulins handed back to Assam Relief Meas-ure.”

In January 1945, an additional 50 beds were set aside at the Assam Relief Military Hospital as “Naga Ward”, which did not cater to outdoor patients. At this point, the Viceroy of India conveyed the decision of the British Government of India to provide a new hospital in acknowledgement of the outstanding services the Nagas had rendered for the success of Allied forces in the Kohima Battle. Construction of the hospital at its current location began in 1946 and undertaken by Harbanslal Malhotra Construction Company of Calcutta on land that was generously donated by “some elders of T Khel” of Kohima village. In June 1949, the hospital was handed over to the provincial Government of Assam and in due course it was upgraded as Kohima Civil Hospital with 60 beds and christened “Naga Hospital” by the Government of India.

Those involved in arson and damage to public and private property will also have their properties attached under the relevant law, he said. Asked if the UP Recovery of Damages to Private and Public property will be

He hoped that Gandhi’s meeting with Banerjee on June 15 would lead to a consensus on nominating the Opposition candidate. He said every MLA and MP’s vote was crucial for the people of the nation. It may be noted that the value of each vote of an MP is 708, while that of MLAs differed from State to State as per population – with the highest value being 208 for an MLA from UP, while the value of an MLA’s vote from Sikkim was the lowest (7). Admitting that President had no legislative duty, Therie asserted that antidefection law was applicable to legislative functionaries only and, as such, political parties had no authority to issue whip or direct MLAs and MPs. upwards its inflation projection. The central bank expects inflation to remain above 6 per cent for three quarters which will add pressure on bond yields. These factors encouraged foreign investors to continue their walk out of the door, he added. Apart from equities, FPIs withdrew a net Rs 600 crore from the debt market during the period under review. They have been incessantly withdrawing money from the debt side since February. From the risk reward perspective and with interest rates rising in US too, Indian debt may not offer an attractive investment option to foreign investors, Himanshu Srivastava, Associate Director - Manager Research, Morningstar India, said. Apart from India, other emerging markets, including Taiwan, South Korea, Thailand and the Philippines witnessed outflow in this month so far.

the inflation must remain high,” he added. According to the data, foreign investors withdrew a net amount of Rs 13,888 crore from equities during June 1-10. FPIs have been incessantly withdrawing money from Indian equities since October 2021. Nair attributed the latest FPI outflow to anticipation of a hawkish Federal Reserve meeting. “Global markets witnessed selling pressure in anticipation of record high inflation numbers in the US, which could force the Fed to accelerate increasing interest rates. At 8.6 per cent, the US inflation is at a 40-year high. Talks of stagnation and China announcing another round of lockdowns all weighed down on investors, prompting another round of selling,” Vijay Singhania, Chairman, TradeSmart, said. In addition, RBI also increased repo rate by 50 basis points and revised

Narendra Modi about digital India,” she said, adding that during the COVID-19 period, people have started paying more digitally, which is “probably leading to a change in the minds of the people”. The initiative of providing information to the taxpayers is also contributing to the awareness about paying their taxes on time. “We have also undertaken large-scale digitalisation over the years,” she said. For FY22, the tax collection is more than Rs 14 lakh crore, which is fairly good compared to the collection for FY20, as per the chairman. She said that the outreach programmes are organised by CBDT through Principal Chief Commissioners, making people aware of the payment of taxes. Initiatives like Updated Returns is also fetching good response. “Once you pay the return, and if we get additional information, then we ask you whether you have covered it, you can file the updated return,” Singh said.

NEW DELHI, JUN 12 (AGENCIES): Wary of the scenario on the global and domestic fronts, foreign investors continued to withdraw from Indian equity markets and pulled out close to Rs 14,000 crore in this month so far. With this, net outflow by foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) from equities reached Rs 1.81 lakh crore so far in 2022, data with depositories showed. Going forward, the FPIs’ selling may continue in the near-term, however, a moderation in sell-off is expected during short to medium-term, Vinod Nair, Head of Research at Geojit Financial Services, said. “This is because a large part of the changeover like economic slowdown, hawkish monetary policy, supply constraints and high inflation is factored in, in the market prices, which was consolidating over the last 7 months. And for central banks to maintain the aggressive policy in long-term,

PANAJI, JUN 12 (PTI): The number of income tax returns has increased in FY22 over the previous fiscal, Central Board of Direct Taxes Chairman Sangeeta Singh said on Saturday. Talking to PTI, Singh said the number of income tax returns last fiscal was 7.14 crore against 6.9 crore in the preceding financial year, showing a clear growth. “There is an increase in the base of taxpayers and the filing of revised returns,” she added. The Board is witnessing an increase in tax collection, which usually happens if the country is showing an upward trend in economic growth, the chairman said, adding that “if the economic activities are going high, the purchases and sales will also increase”. Unless the economy is on an upward trend, taxes cannot go on an upward trend, she noted. “Secondly, the department is also seeing growth in the payment of taxes because of the initiative and call by Prime Minister

Britain’s Queen becomes world’s Destroyed depot with Western weapons: Russia second-longest reigning monarch

KYIV, JUN 12 (AGENCIES): Russian forces fired cruise missiles to destroy a large depot containing U.S. and European weapons in western Ukraine’s Ternopil region, Interfax reported on Sunday, as street fighting raged in the eastern city of Sievierodonetsk. The governor of the Ternopil region said a rocket attack on the city of Chortkiv fired from the Black Sea had partly destroyed a military facility, injuring 22 people. A local official said there were no weapons stored there. Reuters could not independently confirm the differing accounts. Moscow has repeatedly slammed the United States and other nations for supplying Ukraine with weapons. President Vladimir Putin said earlier this month that Russia would strike new targets if the West supplied longer-range missiles to Ukraine for use in high-precision mobile rocket systems. Ukrainian leaders have renewed pleas to Western countries in recent days to speed up deliveries of heavy weapons as Russian forces pound the east of the

country with artillery. Sievierodonetsk has become epicentre of the battle for control over the industrialised Donbas region in the east, made up of Luhansk and Donetsk provinces. Parts of the city have been pulverised in some of the bloodiest fighting since Moscow began its invasion on Feb. 24. Luhansk Gover nor Serhiy Gaidai said on Sunday that Ukrainian and Russian forces were still fighting street by street in Sievierodonetsk. He said that while Russian forces have taken

most of the city, Ukrainian troops remain in control of an industrial area and chemical plant where hundreds of civilians are sheltering. After being forced to scale back its initial campaign goals Moscow has turned to expanding control in the Donbas, where proRussian separatists have held a swath of territory since 2014. Ukraine has said some 800 people were hiding in bomb shelters under the Azot plant, including employees and city residents. “No one can say whether and how many

victims there have been in the last 24 hours in Sievierodonetsk, where intense fighting continues,” Gaidai said on the Telegram messaging app on Sunday. “Everyone wants to evacuate now, probably, but so far there is no such possibility,” In Lysychansk – Sievierodonetsk’s twin city across the Donets River - a woman was killed in Russian shelling while four houses and a shopping centre were destroyed, Gaidai said. To the south and southwest of Sievierodonetsk, Russian forces were firing

mortars and artillery around a number of settlements, according to a daily update from Ukraine’s general staff. But it said Ukrainian forces had repulsed Russian attempts to advance towards some communities. Reuters could not independently verify the battlefield reports. UKRAINE RESILIENT, NEEDS SUPPORT Ukrainian forces have proven more resilient than expected, but the U.S.-based Institute for the Study of War said that as they use the last of their stocks of Sovietera weapons and munitions, they will require consistent Western support. The Interfax report on Sunday said Russian forces had used Kalibr cruise missiles to attack the large depot. It also said Russian forces had shot down three Ukrainian SU-25 fighter jets near Donetsk and Kharkiv in eastern Ukraine. Russian authorities have started handing out Russian passports in two occupied Ukrainian cities Kherson and Melitopol, Russian news agencies said. It was not known how many were distributed.

LONDON, JUN 12 (PTI): Britain’s Queen Elizabeth II on Sunday overtook Thailand’s King to become the world’s second-longest reigning monarch in history, after France’s Louis XIV. The UK has been celebrating the 96-year-old Queen’s Platinum Jubilee to mark 70 years of service to the nation with grand events taking place last weekend. Now she has overtaken Thailand’s King Bhumibol Adulyadej, who reigned for 70 years and 126 days between 1927 and 2016, to set another record. Louis XIV of France remains the longest-reigning monarch, with a 72-year and 110-day reign from 1643 until 1715. Crowned in 1953, Queen Elizabeth II became the longest-serving British monarch in September 2015, surpassing her greatgreat grandmother Queen Victoria. After four days of royal parades, street parties, pageantry and other events held across the UK and the Commonwealth to mark the Platinum Jubilee milestone, the monarch thanked

Queen Elizabeth II

the nation in a letter, saying that she had been “humbled and deeply touched”, and that “this renewed sense of togetherness will be felt for many years to come”. “When it comes to how to mark 70 years as your Queen, there is no guidebook to follow. It really is a first,” the letter read. “But I have been humbled and deeply touched that so many people have taken to the streets to celebrate my Platinum Jubilee,” she said. The Queen has been hit with some age-related mobility problems and chose to miss some of the events, with her son and heir Prince Charles and second in line Prince William and close ranks of the royal family joining. But she

did appear on the balcony of Buckingham Palace at the end of the Jubilee Pageant as the extended Bank Holiday weekend drew to a close. Meanwhile, ‘The Sunday Times’ reports that William - the Duke of Cambridge - will be marking his 40th birthday next week by moving his family from London to Berkshire. His oldest son Prince George, 8, and daughter Princess Charlotte, 7, will leave their prep school in London at the end of this term and are expected to enrol at a school near Windsor - the permanent home of the Queen since the pandemic. William and Kate’s youngest son Prince Louis, 4, who has become somewhat of a media sensation after his ecstatic and playful displays during the Platinum Jubilee celebrations is expected to begin his schooling in Windsor. The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, the future king and queen, will move to a house on the monarch’s Windsor estate this summer.

SEOUL, JUN 12 (IANS): North Korean leader Kim Jong-un on Sunday expressed full support for Russian President Vladimir Putin, despite international condemnation for Moscow’s ongoing invasion of Ukraine. The Russian people have “achieved great successes in accomplishing the just cause of defending the dignity and security of their country, while braving all sorts of challenges and hardships”, Pyongyang’s official Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) quoted Kim as saying in a message to Putin on the occasion of Russia Day. “The Korean people extend full support and encouragement to them.”

Kim’s apparent reference to the unprovoked attack against Ukraine as a “just cause” for defending Russia’s security is the latest sign that illustrates decades-old close bilateral ties between the two countries, reports Yonhap News Agency. Pyongyang has recently stressed its close ties with Moscow despite growing criticism from the international community on the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Kim also expressed conviction that the friendly relations will continue to strengthen in all areas and in the “journey for defending the international justice and ensuring the global security”, the KCNA reported.

WTO chief sees ‘bumpy’ road as ministers work to reach deals GENEVA, JUN 12 (AP): The head of the World Trade Organisation predicted a “bumpy and rocky” road as the trade body opened its highestlevel meeting in 4-1/2 years Sunday, with issues like pandemic preparedness, food insecurity against the backdrop of Russia’s war in Ukraine and overfishing of the world’s seas on the agenda. At a time when some experts question WTO’s future and relevance, DirectorGeneral Ngozi OkonjoIweala hopes the meeting involving more than 120 ministers from the organization’s 164 member countries yields progress toward reducing inequality and ensuring fair and free trade.

Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala

Okonjo-Iweala acknowledged the Genevabased trade body needs reform, “The road will be bumpy and rocky. There may be a few landmines on the way,” Okonjo-Iweala told reporters Sunday before the opening of the four-day meeting. “We’ll have to navigate those landmines

and see how we can successfully land one or two deliverables.” The WTO chief insisted that trade has lifted 1 billion people out of poverty, but poorer countries - and poor people in richer ones are often left behind. She pointed to the food emergency caused by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, where blockaded ports have impeded exports of between 22 million to 25 million tons of grain from a key European breadbasket. Ministers at the meeting will consider whether to commit to lifting or easing export restrictions on food to help alleviate pressures on countries facing a shortage of wheat, fertilizer and other products because of the war.

The letter quoted the Imam’s Facebook posts from earlier in the week to highlight his push towards cancelling screenings of the film and also highlighting the timings of a protest organised against the film. “This clear involvement in a campaign to limit free expression is incompatible with the role of a government adviser. You will have no doubt seen reports of the scenes outside different cinema venues. These included deeply disturbing videos of sectarian chanting and anti-Shia hatred,” the government letter pointed out.

LONDON, JUN 12 (PTI): The UK government has withdrawn the appointment of an Imam from his role as an Independent Advisor over his endorsement of a campaign to ban screenings of a new film claiming to reflect the story of the daughter of Prophet Muhammad. Imam Qari Asim, who was the government’s socalled anti-Islamophobia adviser and also Deputy Chair of the Government’s Anti-Muslim Hatred Working Group, was informed by a letter from the Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities on Saturday evening that his support for the protests against ‘The Lady of Heaven’ restricted artistic expression and encouraged communal tensions. Simon Pegg says rehab saved Taylor Swift wants to make a film Justin Bieber is showing early Actor his life from ruin by alcoholism T signs of recovery, surgeon says A C

Get More Fiber You don’t have to eat a bag of Grandma’s prunes. Leafy greens, whole grains, nuts, and beans are all good for keeping away the fat that stays deep in your belly. That’s called visceral fat, and it’s the m o s t d a n ge r o u s k i n d because it can wrap around major organs, including your liver, pancreas, and kidneys. Forget These Two Things There are no “super foods” that burn off visceral fat. And you can’t tone it away with specific moves like crunches. Instead, look for ways to upgrade your eating habits and add activity every day. Think about your average week. Where might you be able to make some changes? The Best Thing You Can Do While anyone can have too much visceral fat, it’s more likely if you’ve got a lot of weight to lose. As you start to take those pounds off, it will help your whole body, including belly fat that’s hidden out of your sight. Be Choosy About Fat You can still have some! But limit the “saturated” kind that’s in animal foods, coconut and palm oils, and full-fat

Justin Bieber

“With facial paralysis one of the most obvious things is patients are unable to close their eye fully to blink and they are unable to smile,” Nduka added. “Before the smile recovers, the first thing that will develop is there is increasingly symmetry in the face at rest. So, the base of the nose often elevates slightly, and the mouth becomes more even. On the video that was shared I could see some signs that there is some early recovery.” Bieber, 28, said he

was physically unable to perform his upcoming shows. Nduka said he works with patients in the entertainment industry and it is important they first address any issues weakening the immune system before returning to work. “They will be under financial pressures and all sorts of pressures to get back out there as soon as possible, but doing so will only lead to longer term problems,” he said. dairy. Keep the portions of those foods smaller than you might normally do, for instance. And check nutrition labels to see how many calories and how much fat is in a serving. Look for fats that are better for you, too, like those from plant foods or fish such as salmon, tuna, and mackerel that are rich in omega-3s. Stop Tr ying to Outrun It Still trying to “burn off ” that belly fat by pounding the pavement for hour upon hour? Research shows that a few quick bursts of highintensity exercise -- such as a 30-second sprint or intense pullup set -- may be more effective, and easier to fit into your schedule. You can add bursts of higher intensity to any workout. Just speed up or work harder for a brief time, then drop back to a

more mellow pace, and repeat. Sleep: the Goldilocks Formula When it comes to weight gain, shut-eye is a bit like porridge: Too little -- less than 5 hours -- may mean more belly fat. But too much -- more than 8 hours -- can do that, too. “Just right” seems to be around 6-8 hours. If you don’t sleep that much now, or if you tend to toss and turn, try to go to bed a little earlier, relax before bedtime, keep your bedroom cool, and try not to text and email right before you turn in. Forget a ‘Quick Fix’ Sorry, but cosmetic surgery isn’t the solution here. Liposuction doesn’t reach inside the abdominal wall. So it can’t get rid of visceral belly fat. Likewise, crash diets aren’t the solution, either. You’re too likely to go off them.

The slower, steadier option -- lifestyle changes that you can commit to for a long time -- really is the best bet. Keep Calm A r e yo u s t r e s s e d out? That can make you eat more fat and sugar, and unleash the “stress hormone” cortisol, which can boost belly fat. Stress also can make you sleep less, exercise less, and drink more alcohol -- which can add belly fat, too. It’s a great reason to take up meditation, work out, listen to music you love, or find other healthy ways to unwind and relax. Rethink Your Drink Whether it’s a latte, a regular soda, a mug of beer, or a glass of wine, it’s got calories. And when you’re trying to unwind the numbers on the scale, water (or a smaller glass of your favorite beverage) might be a better choice. If you drink alcohol, remember that it just might make you throw your willpower out the window when you order your meal, too. Don’t Smoke As if you need another reason to quit. Smoking makes you more likely to store fat in your belly, rather than your hips and thighs. And that’s bad. Oh, and it’s also a cause of diabetes. And cancer. And

heart disease. And lung disease. And … you get the idea. If you’ve tried before, try again. Tell your doctor, so you can get pointers on what might help you quit for good. Don’t Rely on Clothing Sizes One company’s size 14 could be another’s size

12. A better method is to measure your waist. If you’re a woman, you want that number to be 35 inches or less. Men get up to 40 inches. The reason? You may lower your chance of having a heart attack, a stroke, or possibly certain types of cancer. A tape measure can’t check on

trying to absorb as much as I possibly could. “A few music videos [into my career], I just started going into the edit, and making changes. “It started with meddling, and it went from meddling with the edit to then writing the treatments for the music videos… That was almost ten years ago.” After writing the treatment for ‘The Man’, she attempted to hire a female director but none she knew were available, s o s h e s o u g h t a dv i c e from Lana Wilson, who was directing her ‘Miss Americana’ documentary at the time, and took the reigns on the video herself. She said: “Once I started directing music videos, I didn’t not want

to do it.” However, Taylor admitted she was filled with doubts about her capabilities. She said: “I think I had this imposter syndrome in my head saying, ‘No, you don’t do that. Other people do that who went to school to [direct],’” explained Swift. When Mike, 63, told her he hadn’t gone to school to learn to direct, she re plied: “Oh! It’s fantastic to know that. That makes me feel better. “Don’t you feel like it’s an amazing exercise in trusting gut instinct? There are so many decisions you have to make. Saying ‘I don’t know’ or ‘I’m not sure’ really isn’t an option most of the time.” (Contactmusic)

visceral fat. But along with the scale, it can help you track your weight loss. Lift Weights Think about hitting the gym instead of the trail. In one study, healthy middle-aged men who did 20 minutes of daily weight training gained less abdominal fat than men

who spent the same time doing aerobic exercises, such as biking. Strength training is also good for women -- and it won’t make you bulky. You still need to do some cardio, but make sure strength training is in the mix. (Reviewed by Jennifer Robinson, MD)

anadian pop singer Justin Bieber is showing early signs of making a recovery after he was diagnosed with a virus that left half of his face paralysed, according to a surgeon who specialises in face paralysis. In a video posted on Instagram, Bieber said he had contracted Ramsay Hunt syndrome, which affected nerves in his ear and face. He noted that his right eye was not blinking. Charles Nduka, a consultant plastic reconstructive surgeon in Britain and the co-founder of health charity Facial Palsy UK, said about 75% of patients with the syndrome who receive early treatment, including steroids and antivirals, make a full recovery. “I did notice in the video shared by Mr Bieber that he does appear to have some evidence of recovery, which is encouraging,” Nduka told Reuters.

FIH Pro League: Oly Champs Belgium beat India 3-2

A N T W E R P, J U N 1 2 (IANS): In a brilliant battle of equals, hosts Belgium beat Indian Men’s Hockey Team 3-2 in their second leg of their double-header this weekend at the FIH Hockey Pro League here. It was Abhishek (25’) who scored the match’s first goal while Mandeep Singh (60’) scored a late goal for India. Nicolas de Kerpel (33’) and Alexander Hendrickx (49’, 59’) were the goal scorers for the hosts. With this win, Belgium have pushed India to the third place in the pool standings while Netherlands continues to lead the table in this season’s prestigious FIH Hockey Pro League. It was hosts Belgium who got off to a flying start, showing their will to bounce back after losing to India 4-5 in a tense shootout on Saturday. After a few attempts, Belgium found an early opportunity in the 7th minute through a PC but a poor variation denied them a lead. Three minutes later, Jarmanpreet’s assist to Sukhjeet Singh at the top

Both teams played the next few minutes with caution, rotating the ball tactfully creating space but neither team were successful in scoring a goal. After showing patience in their game, India finally broke the deadlock in the 25th minute when Gurjant teamed up with Lalit Upadhyay to set up a brilliant goal by Abhishek. Ahead by 1-0 at half-time, India came out of the ten-

minute half-time break with a clear intent to increase their lead. Harmanpreet Singh created one such opportunity when he assisted experienced forward Akashdeep Singh with a brilliant long pass only a minute and a half into the third quarter. Poised on top of the circle, Akashdeep took a strong shot on goal but it went straight to the Belgian goalie Vincent Vanasch who padded the ball away. Only moments later, Belgium scored a splendid goal in the 33rd minute when a good

interception dispossessed India, setting up a brilliant run into the circle where Arthur de Sloover set up Nicolas de Kerpel to score. Kerpel sneaked the ball past India’s vigilant custodian Sreejesh, into the extreme right corner of the post. The goal fetched the hosts a much-needed equaliser as they built on this attack to create many more opportunities in the following minutes. The hosts succeeded in extending their lead when they were awarded a PC after a foot foul by Indian defenders inside their circle. Alexander Hendrickx was on target firing the ball past India’s PC defence. With just five minutes left for the final hooter, India found a fine opportunity when they won a PC after a good video referral call. But dragflick specialist Harmanpreet’s aim to net the top of the post was pushed away by Belgium’s experienced goalie Vanasch. With just minutes left before the final hooter, Belgium put India under pressure when they drove into the striking circle. This was when

a desperate body tackle by Sreejesh saw India concede a penalty stroke which was converted by Hendrickx with ease. Though, India fought back to the final second, with Manpreet Singh setting up India’s second goal when he assisted Vivek Sagar in the circle. A quickthinking Vivek pushed the ball to Mandeep Singh who deflected the ball past Belgium’s keeper to narrow the lead to 2-3. But unfortunately, with just 30 seconds left, India’s excellent fight back ended in disappointment.

LO N D O N, J U N 1 2 (AGENCIES): British cruiserweight Richard Riakporhe scored a stunning win over Fabio Turchi in an IBF eliminator, landing a left hook body shot to deck the Italian in the second round and move closer to a shot at a world title. A wincing Turchi managed to get back on his feet, but a member of his team entered the ring with a towel in hand to bring the contest to a halt. Riakporhe, 32, preserved his unbeaten record with the 15th win of his career on Saturday, with 11 of those wins finishing inside the distance. “I feel great, I didn’t have much time to get into it,” Riakporhe said. “I landed a good shot and I’m building up the reputation that I’m now the body snatcher. “There were some

wickets at regular intervals. Anrich Nortje (2/36) was the most successful bowler for South Africa while Kagiso Rabada, Wayne Parnell, Dwaine Pretorius, Keshav Maharaj picked one wicket each. In reply, Heinrich Klaasen played a brilliant knock (81 off 46) and led South Africa to a convincing win. Football to permanently bring in 5 substitutions rule

LONDON, JUN 12 (AGENCIES): The use of five substitutes will be introduced into the laws of the game when football’s lawmakers, the International Football Association Board (IFAB), meet in Doha on Monday. The rule was brought in during May 2020 because of the Covid-19 pandemic. It will now implemented prior to the 2022-23 season at the discretion of the organisers of a competition. IFAB’s agenda also includes discussing concussion substitutes and semi-automated offside technology. The Premier League became the only major competition not to continue with five substitutions and go back to a maximum of three in a match for the 2020-21 season. Some clubs felt it gave those with bigger squads an unfair advantage and it was not brought in for the

2021-22 season either, despite IFAB recommending that five substitutions be implemented permanently in the sport in October 2021. However, Premier League clubs agreed to allow five substitutions for 2022-23 following a vote in March. IFAB says the substitutions can be made on three occasions during a match, excluding any changes at half-time, while a potential sixth change can be made if a match goes to extra time. In terms of concussion substitutes and semi-automated offside technology, they will only be discussion points during the IFAB meeting in Doha. IFAB approved a trial in December 2020 which only allowed for permanent concussion substitutions, although the Professional Footballers’ Association has called

for temporary substitutions to be brought in as part of the testing. FIFA has held trials of semiautomated offside technology at the FIFA Club World Cup and the FIFA Arab Cup and could use it at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar later this year. It works by using 10 dedicated cameras, as well as several television cameras, which collect up to 29 data points for every player 50 times per second. “We’re continuing a test to try to achieve the objective: to have more accurate decisions and also quicker decisions in offside incidents,” Pierluigi Collina, chairman of FIFA’s referee committee, said in February. “Someone called it robot offside; it’s not. “The referees and the assistant referees are still responsible for the decision on the field of play.

Federer confirms his return to top-level tennis in 2023

LONDON, JUN 12 (IANS): The former world number one Roger Federer has confirmed that he will return to top-level tennis in 2023, but added that he had not made any concrete plans beyond his scheduled appearances at the Laver Cup and his home tournament in Basel later this year. Federer, who will be 41 in August, has not played since July last year, when he was knocked out of Wimbledon in the quarterfinals against Hubert Hurkacz. Earlier this year, Federer confirmed his plans to team up with Spaniard Rafael Nadal at the Laver Cup in London, before competing at the Swiss Indoors tournament. “Yes, definitely,” Federer was quoted as saying by newspaper Tages-Anzeiger when asked if he wanted to return to the ATP tour in 2023. “How and where, I don’t know yet. But that would be the idea. I haven’t planned more than the Laver Cup and Basel yet. After Basel, the season is over anyway. It’s important for me to get fit again so that I can train fully. Once I’ve done that, I can choose how many tournaments I play and where. Printed, Published and Edited by Geoffrey Yaden at G.M. Printers, Circular Rd. Dimapur-797112.
