Shah sets target of 35 LS seats in WB

SURI (WB), APR 14 (PTI): Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Friday set a target for the BJP to win 35 of the 42 Lok Sabha seats in West Bengal in next year’s election, and said the Mamata Banerjee government in the state won’t survive beyond 2025.

Stating that Narendra Modi would again be the prime minister of the country in 2024, Shah asserted that leaders like Mamata Banerjee, can never give a befitting reply to Pakistan or fight militancy in Kashmir.

Shah’s comments drew sharp reactions from the TMC, which asked how a union minister could “openly threaten to topple an elected government” before it completes its full term. “Let me make it very clear that in 2024, Narendra Modi will again be the

country’s Prime Minister. The people of Bengal have given us great responsibility by giving us 77 seats in the last assembly polls.

“Give us more than 35 Lok Sabha seats from West Bengal, and I can assure you that the corrupt TMC government won’t survive beyond 2025,” he said while addressing a rally in the Suri area in Birbhum district.

The Mamata Banerjee government is scheduled to complete its third term in 2026. The BJP won 18 of the 42 Lok Sabha seats in West Bengal in the 2019

Cong ally Sharad Pawar’s party enters K’taka contest

NEW DELHI, APR 14 (AGENCIES):

Just a day after Sharad Pawar’s meeting with Congress leaders in the name of “opposition unity”, his Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) announced that it may contest next month’s Karnataka election, reports NDTV news.

The NCP is planning to contest 40-45 seats in the May 10 Karnataka election, in regions where the BJP, Congress and Janata Dal United (JDU) are locked in a triangular contest.

The decision, which is a huge blow to larger opposition unity, is reportedly linked to the NCP losing its national status recently.

“We have to take steps to regain our national party status,” NCP leader Praful Patel said.

The NCP has been allotted its alarm clock sym-

elections.

Leaders like Mamata Banerjee can “never give a befitting reply to Pakistan, fight militancy in Kashmir,” the BJP leader said adding that only Prime Minister Modi is capable of handling such national issues.

Criticising the TMC over the arrest of its ministers and leaders in graft cases by ED and CBI, Shah said the party should be ashamed of itself.

“Electing Narendra Modi again as the PM would be the trailer before removing Mamata Banerjee from power in Bengal,” said Shah, considered the principal electoral strategist of the saffron party.

Referring to the criticism that central agencies have targetted the TMC for political reasons, Shah said those who engage in corruption and loot will eventually end up in prison. He claimed Banerjee does not care about the youth of Bengal who were

The NCP is expected to partner with the Maharashtra Ekikaran Samiti in the MaharashtraKarnataka boundary region, which is home to a sizeable Marathi population.

The NCP’s presence is most likely to impact its ally Congress, which fancies its chances in this election, with the ruling BJP fighting allegations of corruption and anti-incumbency.

Last evening, Sharad Pawar met with Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge and Rahul Gandhi, in an important outreach at a time the NCP chief’s recent comments indicated a divide within the opposition on the demand for a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) into the Adani-Hindenburg row.

(PTI): Over 3,000 lawmakers from every state and union territory are expected to gather for the first-ever National Legislators’ Conference Bharat (NLC Bharat) to be held in Mumbai in June this year.

The three-day conference will see MLAs and MLCs discuss case studies such as Uttarakhand’s initiatives of bringing its unemployment figures from the highest down to the lowest in the country, Kerala’s Covid management pandemic and the story of an MLA from Nagaland who came up with an elaborate plan to provide training and gainful employment to over one lakh youth. The NLC Bharat, supported by various state legislatures, will be held from June 15-17. Only the BJP can fight and defeat the corrupt TMC. Under Mamata Banerjee’s rule, West Bengal has turned into a hub of bomb-making factories,” the union home minister claimed.

Banerjee’s nephew Abhishek is TMC’s national general secretary and a two-time MP. Referring to recent clashes during Ram Navami rallies in West Bengal, Shah said once the BJP wins more than 35 seats, “no one would dare to attack Ram Navami rallies in the state.”

Prohibitory orders were imposed in West Bengal’s Hooghly and Howrah districts, where clashes broke out between two groups during the Ram Navami procession.

NEW DELHI, APR 14

(PTI): The CBI Friday summoned Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on April 16 in connection with the excise policy scam case, in which his former deputy Manish Sisodia was arrested last month.

According to the notice issued by the CBI, Kejriwal has been called to appear at the agency headquarters at 11 AM on Sunday to answer queries of the investigating team as a witness in the case, officials said.

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) called it a conspiracy and confirmed that Kejriwal will appear before the agency on Sunday. There are allegations that money raised from tweaking the policy in favour of certain liquor dealers and the South lobby was suspected to be pumped in for election purposes by the AAP, which is under the probe as part of the money trail, agency sources said. They said the

Arvind Kejriwal process of policy formulation and influence of South lobby, besides changes in the draft stages, was in the know of the chief minister, which makes it necessary to put questions to him. Kejriwal may also be asked about an “untraceable” file containing details of the expert committee and public comments when the policy was at a nascent stage of formulation and referral of the issue to Group of Ministers (GoM) headed by Sisodia; besides his possible conversation with suspects in the case, they said. Sources have stated that the final role of Kejriwal, whether as a witness or an accused, will be decided while filing a charge sheet in the case after considering multiple factors. As of now, the chief minister is expected to answer questions as a witness, they said. The CBI is bracing for an elaborate security arrangement around its headquarters and hence kept the questioning day on Sunday, when offices in the vicinity remain closed. The agency had adopted the same strategy when Sisodia was called at the agency headquarters, where he was grilled for eight hours before being taken into custody. The allegations revolve around the Delhi government’s excise policy for 2021-22, which is accused of granting licences to liquor traders who had allegedly paid bribes for it, a charge strongly refuted by the AAP. The policy was later scrapped.

BRS will form govt at Centre after the 2024 polls: KCR

HYDERABAD, APR 14 (PTI): Exuding confidence that BRS would form the government at the Centre after the 2024 Lok Sabha Polls, Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao on Friday said that the Dalit Bandhu scheme would be implemented across the country after the party came to power. The Dalit Bandhu scheme, launched in 2021 offers Rs 10 lakh to Scheduled Caste families as a 100 per cent grant to start a business. The funds given under the direct benefit transfer scheme need not be repaid.

Addressing a public meeting after unveiling a 125 ft-tall statue of B R Ambedkar here, KCR said the BRS party was getting a tremendous response from

Maharashtra and was expecting a similar reaction from West Bengal, Bihar, and Uttar Pradesh.

“I will tell you certain things. In this 2024 Parliament elections, the next government is ours, ours, and ours. Some of our enemies may not be able to digest this. But one spark is enough to light,” he said.

Unveiling the Ambed- kar statue here on a grand scale on Friday, the birth anniversary of the architect of the Constitution, he said even after 70 years after the Constitution came into effect, Dalits were still the poorest in the country, which was shameful.

Pitching for change in the country, Rao said political parties may win or lose, but the people of the country should win.

Rao said his government had spent over Rs 1.25 lakh crore during the past 10 years (including this year’s budget) for the development of Dalits, as against the Rs 16,000 crore spent by the earlier government in the same amount of time.

The Telangana CM said the welfare scheme for Scheduled Castes would

GOVERNMENT OF NAGALAND OFFICE OF THE EMPOWERED OFFICER be extended to 1.25 lakh families during the current fiscal year, and added that “Dalit Bandhu will be given to 25 lakh Dalit families every year across the country once our government is formed (at the Centre).”

Speaking about Ambedkar, he said India’s first law minister was still relevant in present-day politics and it was everyone’s responsibility to ensure that his dreams for an equal society were fulfilled. Rao said everyone should attempt to practise what Ambedkar preached. The BRS government would allot a Rs 51 crore corpus for an award in the name of Ambedkar to be given to people in the field of service, the CM announced.
