Shah has stressed that perpetrators of violence need to be dealt with a firm hand even if they have political affiliations.

“The Home Minister directed strict action against the perpetrators of violence and assured complete support and help of the Central government to ensure lasting peace,” he said.

“It was a complete review done on various law and order issues and also Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act (AFSPA),” another official said, referring to the controversial Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act, a law that gives sweeping powers to the military and protects soldiers from legal prosecution.

Shah, he said, met the Meitei delegation on Sunday and representatives from Kuki community from Manipur and a group of Civil Society Organisation from Mizoram on Monday.

Shah assured that the government would take all measures to protect various

It may be recalled that violent clashes took place in Manipur on May 3 during a “tribal solidarity march” in protest against Meiteis’ demand for Scheduled Tribes status.

The clashes were preceded by tension over the eviction of Kuki villagers from reserve forest land, which led to a series of smaller agitations.

Though Meities comprise 64 per cent of the state’s population, they occupy 10 per cent of the state’s territory as non-tribals are not allowed to buy land in notified hill areas. Their inclusion in the ST category will enable them to purchase land and the possibility has unleashed tribal emotions.

IMPHAL, MAY 15 (IANS): Hours after Manipur chief minister N. Biren Singh on Monday rejected the demand raised by 10 Kuki MLAs for a “separate administration”, equivalent to a separate state, comprising the Kuki tribal-dominated districts of Manipur, the 10 legislators in a letter to Union Home Minister Amit Shah reiterated their demand.

The 10 MLAs, seven of them are ruling BJP, in their letter to Shah said “that Manipur is now partitioned, is the ground reality”.

“(After the May 3 ethnic violence), there are no tribals left in the Imphal valley. There are no (nontribals) people belonging to the Meitei community left in the hills. The government of Manipur and its police machinery were communalised and used in the pogrom against the Kuki

US decries ‘targeted’ attacks, ‘home demolitions’ in India

WASHINGTON, MAY 15

(IANS): The US State Department outlined in great detail “numerous reports during the year of violence by law enforcement authorities against members of religious minorities in multiple states” in India in its 2022 annual report on the state of freedom of religion around the world.

The report was released by Secretary of State Antony Blinken who noted both progress and “continuation, and in some instances, the rise of very troubling trends”. Previewing the report earlier, a senior State Department official told reporters that regarding In-

dia the document outlined “continued targeted attacks against religious communities, including Christians, Muslims, Sikhs, Hindu Dalits, and indigenous communities; dehumanizing rhetoric, including open calls for genocide against Muslims; lynching and other hate-fueled violence, attacks on houses of worship and home demolitions, and in some cases impunity and even clemency for those who’ve engaged in attacks on religious minoritieswe’re also continuing to see, at the state level, some restrictions on religious attire”.

Rashad Hussain, the

Ambassador at Large at the State Department for International Religious Freedom, cited the Hardwar speeches of December 2021 as particularly problematic.

“In India, legal advocates and faith leaders from across the country’s diverse religious communities condemned a case of extreme hate speech against Muslims in the city of Hardwar, calling for the country to uphold its historical traditions of pluralism and tolerance,” he said at the release of the report. He was referring to a three-day meeting called the Dharma Sansad in December 2021, where speakers called for people to take up

Prioritize foothills road work: NFHRCC

DIMAPUR, MAY 15 (NPN):

Nagaland Foothills Road Coordination Committee (NFHRCC) has resolved to reiterate its appeal to the state government to “diligently put on priority list” the construction of the foothills road in the current financial year for NEC funding” in accordance to the NLA resolutions adopted on September 22, 2022, which was further reaffirmed at the 1st Assembly Session of the 14th NLA in March 2023.

In a press statement, NFHRCC convenor Supu Jamir, co-convenor Hokiye Yepthomi, general secretary W Lemba Chang and assistant general Secretary

Chenithung Humtsoe stated that the resolution was adopted during the joint stakeholders meeting consisting of officials of PWD (R&B), foothills contractor firms, Dimapur-based tribal hohos and NFHRCC in Dimapur on May 13, 2023.

At the meeting, the house also resolved to undertake a joint inspection tour at the earliest from Niuland to Tizit. The joint team would consist of divisional EE, PWD (R&B), divisional contractors, the tribal bodies and the committee members. The tour team would ascertain the technical completion of the work and recommend

performance-based release of the remaining bills, before the onset of the rainy season, NFHRCC stated.

Further, the meeting resolved to maintain the cohesiveness of NFHRCC and protect its sanctity as it was unanimously approved by the respective apex tribal hohos as a pressure group in 2013. Therefore, in the event of any individual or groups undermining the authenticity of the committee in any unrealistic manner, the NFHRCC said such individual or group would not be tolerated and appropriate correctional measures would be initiated against them.

arms against Muslims. A case was registered by the Uttarakhand police against the organiser. The other countries mentioned by Hussain were Russia, China, Afghanistan, and Saudi Arabia. The State Department’s annual report has been critical of the state of religious freedom in India before, and, based on local news reports and accounts from civil society, it has listed instances and cases over the years.

India has rejected these unsolicited observations and remarks before and in recent years questioned America’s right to stand in judgment on other countries.

The letter, available with IANS, to Amit Shah said that “the recent institutionalised ethnic cleansing and atrocities committed by majority Meitei community against the ethnic KukiChin-Mizo-Zomi-Hmar minority community has left everyone aghast”.

“Huge population transfers between the valley and the hills inhabited by the Kuki-Chin-Mizo- ZomiHmar had occurred. Kuki colonies and houses were marked and attacked with precision in Imphal city.”

“The spark was ignited in the afternoon of May 3 when Meitei miscreants set fire to the Anglo-Kuki war memorial gate at Leisang in Churachandpur district.”

The letter claimed that as it was premeditated, all Kuki Police officers from

Power play on for Karnataka CM post

NEW DELHI/BENGALURU, MAY 15 (PTI):

The suspense over the new Karnataka chief minister intensified on Monday as state Congress president D

K Shivakumar cancelled his visit to the national capital citing health issues after he and Siddaramaiah, both frontrunners for the top post, were called by the central leadership for discussions.

Shivakumar’s brother and Congress MP D K Suresh, who met party president Kharge at the latter’s residence in Delhi, late Monday night told reporters that Shivakumar will be visiting Delhi on Tuesday.

Power outage in parts of Dimapur

DIMAPUR, MAY 15 (NPN): Power department has informed all consumers under 11kV Airport, Purana Bazaar and Veterinary feeders that there would be a scheduled shutdown of power supply.

In this regard, SDO (Elec. II) Er. Chubatemsu Ao said that the following areas would be affected-- Burma Camp, Purana Bazaar, parts of Walford, Naharbari, Darogajan, Padumpukhuri, Darogapathar and its adjoining areas on May 16, 18, 19 and 20 from 4 a.m. to 8 a.m.

This is being done for construction of 11kV trunk line, to strengthen the 11kV feeders along main roads in Dimapur town, the official said. All those in the affected areas have been requested to extend cooperation and bear the inconvenience during the shutdown period.

“Yes, he will be coming tomorrow,” Suresh said in response to a question from reporters. The three central observers, who interacted with party MLAs on their choice for the CM’s post after the Congress Legislature Party meeting on Sunday, briefed party chief Mallikarjun Kharge and submitted their report.

After the meeting, Randeep Surjewala, AICC in-charge for Karnataka, said that the party was not in a hurry and would take a decision after wider consultations with state leaders.

Sources said the party is likely to take a decision in the next two-three days.

Former chief minister Siddaramaiah and Shivakumar were called by the party high command for further discussion on government formation. Siddaramaiah arrived this afternoon in the national capital but Shivakumar cancelled his visit, hours after confirming he would be flying to Delhi, fuelling speculation that the factional fighting in Karnataka Congress had reared its head again. The move by Shivakumar, seen by many as a “pressure tactic” to assert his claim on the top post, indicated that the leadership war in the southern state is far from over.

WhatsApp’s chat lock feature to safeguard private conversations

NEW DELHI, MAY 15 (AGENCIES): Meta-owned messaging app WhatsApp has rolled out new Chat Lock feature to help its users keep their messages and conversations private and secure, NDTV’s Gadget360 report stated. While WhatsApp already provide an end-toend encryption on the app, the new feature act as an added layer by letting users select the conversations that they want to keep hidden from access to anyone else.

Cong questions silence of Gov, Speaker on 10 Kuki MLAs demand

Correspondent

IMPHAL, MAY 15: Opposition Congress in Manipur on Monday questioned the reason behind state Governor and Speaker of Manipur Legislative Assembly remaining silent even as 10 sitting MLAs openly challenge the territorial integrity of Manipur.

Addressing a news conference in Imphal’s Congress Bhavan today, MPCC president K Meghachandra said that the Congress party was against the joint statement of the 10 MLAs of the ruling parties including two ministers from the BJP demanding a separate administration for the Kukis in Manipur.

The joint statement amounted to disintegrate the territorial integrity of Manipur.

It was not a right step on the part of the Governor and Speaker of Manipur Assembly Speaker

to remain silent. A suomotu case should be lodged against them and punish them as their acts were unethical.

Meghachandra said that as per the rules and conduct of business of the Manipur Legislative Assembly, the Speaker must take action again st these 10 MLAs.

He also questioned how the MLAs of the ruling BJP, the party that always shouted for safeguarding and protecting the integrity of the state and its alliance can voice against the party’s commitment.

The MPCC president further expressed the party’s displeasure over the failure to safeguard the life and property of the people by the incumbent government even after 12 days since the violence erupted on May 3 and deployment of thousands of paramilitary forces and army.

“Is the government’s efforts to curb the present conflict with responsibility,” he asked.

Meghachandra further said that the party was displeased with the response of the leaders of BJP government at the Centre to the spate of violence in the state.

Attending the news conference, senior Congress leader and former chief minister OkramI bobi said that the Centre as well as the state government should not take the issue lightly and deal with seriousness.

“Otherwise, things will become worse. All issues can be settled through

dialogue,” he said, while asserting that The Centre has an important role while dealing with the issue of the illegal immigrant in the state.

The former three time chief minister suggested that the government should act as there is still a government instead of handing over the government to the security advisor to the state government.

The leader of the Congress legislator wing also urged the government to deploy an adequate number of Central security forces in the sensitive areas, particularly in the periphery of the valley and hills so that people feel secure.

He also criticized the incumbent government for unable to protect the goods ferrying trucks plying on the national highways even as the Centre had sent more than enough numbers of paramilitary and Army in deal with the prevailing situation in the state.

GUWAHATI, MAY 15 (IANS): Assam police have seized narcotic substances worth Rs 4 crore from Cachar district, officials said on Monday.

The two arrested were identified as Saharul Islam Mazumder (31) and Samir Hussain Laskar, alias Babul (45). They are residents of the Berenga area in the Cachar district.

Mahatta said, “Mazumder and Laskar were kingpins of drug peddling in urban areas. We are interrogating them to get further details on the network.”

A total of 5,749 people in more than 50 villages were affected by the powerful winds on Sunday, they said.

However, there were no reports of fatalities.

Man who took 17 bullets in Mnp clash undergoing treatment

AIZAWL, MAY 15 (PTI):

A 25-year-old man who took 17 bullets during ethnic clashes in Manipur is currently undergoing treatment at a government hospital in neighbouring Mizoram, an official said on Monday.

The victim, identified as Pauginmuan, was brought to Aizawl Civil Hospital from Churachandpur district in the neighbouring state for better medical facilities on Sunday. He took at least 17 bullets fired from a locally made gun when a violent clash occurred at a village on May 3, the official said.

The bullets hit him on the back and neck. Four of these, however, were removed in the Churachandpur district hospital.

Pauginmuan was taken to Aizawl as doctors in Churachandpur said they did not have the required equipment to extract the bullets embedded close to the spinal cord and vascular veins, he said. Efforts are being made to extricate the bullets on Monday, the official said. Pauginmuan, who belonged to the ChinKuki-Mizo tribe, claimed that he and his friends were protecting their village when some armed miscreants attacked them after the Tribal Solidarity March’ ended on May 3.

coastlines and forcing the evacuation of over five lakh people in low lying areas. Of the 236 houses, 27 were completely damaged and 127 houses were partially damaged, the officials said.

Siaha district in the southern part of Mizoram, which shares its border with Myanmar, was the worst hit as 101 houses, including two relief camps, suffered damages, they said.

The super cyclone made landfall on the Teknaf shorelines before making its way through the Naf River that divides Bangladesh and Myanmar.

Over 70 people have died in violence since May 4 when violence broke out between Manipur’s valley residents Meiteis and the Kuki tribals in the hills over the Meiteis’ demand for inclusion under the Scheduled Tribes (ST) category.

Lieutenant General Konsam Himalay Singh, PVSM, UYSM, AVSM YSM (retired) - the first officer from the northeast to become a Lieutenant General in the Indian Army - has requested both Meitei and Kuki groups to work together to bring back normalcy and ensure the safe return of people who had to leave their settlements after violence broke out.

“Right now, the need is working to ensure everyone in Manipur, whether tribal or non-tribal, Meitei or Kuki, come to an understanding that violence is not the solution,” Lt General Singh told NDTV on phone from the US, where he has gone on a personal visit and is likely to return soon.

“Since internet has been snapped in Manipur, a lot of misinformation is being spread on social media. People should not fall for fake news about the situation in Manipur. Every

effort should be towards bringing peace, not towards making the situation worse from bad,” said Lt General Singh, who was honoured with the Yudh Seva Medal after the Kargil War in 1999, when he commanded the 27th Battalion, Rajput Regiment, in the high-altitude battlefield Siachen. The Indian Army’s women soldiers meet with women and children affected by violence in Manipur Curfew was relaxed in some parts of Manipur between 5 am and 12 pm today. But sporadic gunfights between the security forces and insurgents have been reported from the hills across the state in the past few days. On March 11, nearly a month before the Meitei-Kuki clashes broke out, the Manipur government withdrew from tripartite talks and ‘suspension of operations’ signed with the armed tribal groups Kuki National Army (KNA) and Zomi Revolutionary Army (ZRA).

Vishva Hindu Parishad calls for peace in Manipur

NEW DELHI, MAY 15 (PTI): The Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) on Monday deplored the violence in Manipur and appealed for peace in the state.

In a video message, VHP national secretary general Milind Parande said not only churches but temples too have been “destroyed” during the violent clashes between two communities in the state. “The violence in Manipur is deplorable. VHP appeals for peace,” Parande said, adding, “This violence must stop immediately”.

Parande said a “wrong impression” has been created that only churches were damaged in the violence. “Over 40 temples of the Meitei community have also been destroyed in the violence,” he said and cautioned against the spread of “false narrative

that only the Churches have been attacked”. During the violence, several state properties have also been “destroyed”, he added.

The VHP leader appealed to the “Hindu society” to come forward and rebuild the destroyed temples.

The VHP is serving the affected people and providing them food and health care services, he added.

Violent clashes broke out in Manipur after a ‘Tribal Solidarity March’ was organised in the 10 hill districts on May 3 in protest against the Meitei community’s demand for Scheduled Tribe (ST) Status.

The violence was preceded by tension over the eviction of Kuki villagers from reserve forest land, which had led to a series of smaller agitations.

SHILLONG, MAY 15:

Meghalaya’s opposition

Voice of the People Party (VPP) on Monday announced its first phase of agitation to mount pressure on the Conrad Sangmaled government to halt the recruitment processes until issues regarding the state job reservation and roster system are resolved.

VPP Spokesperson

Batskhem Myrboh said the party would stage a sit-in demonstration at the parking lot near the Additional Secretariat on May 17 from 10 am to 4 pm. Myrboh said in view of the adamant attitude and lack of response of the NPP- led MDA 2.0 government to the demand of the party on the need to put on hold all the recruitment process in the state till the state job reservation policy and the implementation of the roster system is reviewed by an expert committee, “The party workers and the public are urged to participate in the protest to put pressure on the NPP-

led government. It may be noted that this government is trying to make itself immune to logic, fairness and public concerns. The other programmes will be subsequently announced”, the VPP spokesperson said. 85 percent of the state government jobs are reserved for the tribal communities. 40 percent is reserved for the for the Khasi-JaintiaBhoi communities, while 40 per cent for the Garos. Another five percent is reserved for the other tribes residing in the state.

Several pressure groups from Garo Hills are now demanding that the roster system must be implemented retrospectively since the formation of the state.

GUWAHATI, MAY 15 (IANS): Even as a section of people who sought refuge in Assam’s Cachar district due to wide-scale violence in Manipur had earlier returned to their state after the situation improved there, they have again started taking shelter in temporary camps in Cachar, a district official said on Monday.

Soon after the violence broke out, around 2,300 people crossed the Jiri River at the Assam-Manipur border and entered the Cachar district, which shares a long boundary with Manipur. The district administration provided the necessary arrangements for the refugees’ housing.

Jonathon Bhaifai, circle officer of Lakhipur sub-division in Cachar, said: “There were 13 shelter camps where the refugees took shelter. As the situation improved over the last few days, many went back to their homes. The refugee tally in the shelter camps decreased below one thousand.”

NTPC to start study for floating solar plant in Tripura

AGARTALA, MAY 15 (PTI): The National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) Ltd will begin a feasibility study for a 130MW floating solar power plant on Dumbur Lake in Tripura’s Gomati district, an official said on Monday.

In the past five years, the northeastern state has increased solar power energy from 4.07 MW to 7.21 MW with the government trying hard to increase renewable energy in a big way. Tripura Renewable Energy Development Agency (TREDA) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the NTPC to carry out the feasibility study for the floating power plant. NTPC operates

a 100-MW floating solar power project at Ramagundam in Telangana. Under the study, the NTPC will examine the area of the waterbody required to be taken up for the plant, identification of local transfer stations and forest clearance for setting up the state’s first renewable energy plant, TREDA Joint Director Debabrata Sukladas said.

The Dimapur Aliba Senso Telongjem & Dimapur Area Aliba Fellowship extends our heartiest gratitude to the Dept. of Agriculture, GON, Officers & Staff of ATMA Mkg, the Organising Committee and all the societies and individuals responsible for successfully organising the “Cucumber Festival 2023” on 9th & 10th May at Aliba Village.

We also deeply appreciate the relentless efforts of the cultivators in harvesting plentiful produce of the off season cucumber and contributing to the jubilant conduct of the festival.

“The proposed 130MW floating power plant is important for the state’s aim of producing 200 MW solar energy by 2030. The state’s average solar power energy’s potentiality stands at 2080 MW. The TREDA,

Tripura State Electricity Corporation (TSECL) and the Tripura Power Generation Company - all are trying hard to tap the solar power energy potential of the state,” Sukladas said. TREDA has also initiated a process to provide solar power to the interior tribal habitations where conventional power supply is not profitable. “The installation of the solar microgrid has been completed in 17 tribal habitations while work is in progress for 50 more habitations with a cost of Rs 5.70 crore”, he said adding that the Centre has approved a Rs 80 crore project in principle which will cover as many as 274 habitations with solar power.

Pilot’s ultimatum to Gehlot: Agree to demands or face state-wide agitation

JAIPUR, MAY 15 (PTI): Flanked by at least 14 other Congress MLAs at a rally here on Monday, dissident leader Sachin Pilot served notice on Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot -–agree to their demands by the month-end or face a statewide agitation.

The intensification of the Gehlot-Pilot tussle in Rajasthan Congress came on a day when the party’s central leadership struggled to pick between the two CM contenders – Siddaramaiah and D K Shivakumar – in Karnataka after winning the assembly polls there.

The public meeting marked the completion of Pilot’s five-day foot march from Ajmer to Jaipur over “inaction” by the Gehlot government on “corruption” during the previous BJP term in the state. Apart from a call for a high-level probe into corruption, Pilot spelled out two other demands – disbanding the Rajasthan Public Service Commission (RPSC) and its reconstitution, and compensation for those affected by the cancellation

of government recruitment exams after paper leaks.

“If action is not taken by this month-end on these three demands, an agitation will be launched across the state,” the former deputy chief minister said.

The former deputy CM also referred to the one-day fast he held last month. “So far, I have done ‘anshan’ and taken out a ‘yatra’. If action is not taken in the interest of the youth on these three demands, I will launch an agitation in the entire state,” he said.

“We will walk on foot with people in villages and hamlets, and get them justice,” he added, as the crowd

of several thousand people shouted in support.

Pilot said nothing will cow him down.

“I promise that I will continue to serve the people of Rajasthan till my last breath, even if I remain on any post or not. Nothing can scare me or suppress me. I have fought for you and will continue to do so,” he said.

Pilot said his agitation was not against anyone but against corruption and for the youth. But Gehlot, who became the chief minister after the party ignored his own claim to the post in 2018, was clearly the main target.

Rajasthan Forest Minister Hemaram Choudhary,

Article 370 was meant to be ‘temporary’ provision in Constitution: Amit Shah

NEW DELHI, MAY 15

(PTI): The now-scrapped Article 370, which gave special status to Jammu and Kashmir, was meant to be a “temporary” provision since the beginning and the framers of the Constitution had put it there “intelligently”, Union Home Minister Amit Shah said on Monday.

Inaugurating a training programme on legislative drafting, Shah also said that if a legislation is drafted well, there is “no need for any court to give any explanation to any law”.

If the drafting is simple and clear, it will also be easier to educate people about the law with minimal chances of errors by the executive, he said and added

that if “grey areas” are left in the drafting, they will lead to “encroachment” in interpretation. Shah said if the drafting is complete and lucid, its interpretation will also be clear.

Referring to Article 370, which the BJP government at the Centre repealed in 2019, the home minister said the whole country wanted that the provision of the Constitution should not be in existence.

He also highlighted that when the Article was

framed, it was mentioned in the index as “Temporary Provision of Article 370”. Even debates on the Article were missing from the records of constituent assembly debates, Shah said and added that they were not printed.

Shah said it could well be imagined that whoever had drafted it and those who were part of the constituent assembly, how intelligently they put it and how after lots of thought the “temporary” word was inserted.

“An article of the Constitution cannot be temporary, it can be amended. If you read it even today -- the old Constitution, it is clearly written as Temporary Provision of Article 370,” he said.

Deependra Singh Shekhawat, Harish Meena, Giriraj Malinga, Rakesh Pareek, Ramniwas Gawriya, Indraj Gurjar, Virendra Choudhary, Suresh Modi, Vedprakash Solanki, G R Khatana, Mukesh Bhakar too were present.

The show of strength by Pilot comes just months before the assembly polls when the party hopes to return to power in Rajasthan. When Pilot announced his fast against corruption last month, the Congress had termed it anti-party activity.

At the Jaipur rally, Pilot also referred to the boycott by CM loyalists of a Congress Legislature Party meeting in September last year, called amid speculation then that Pilot will be made the chief minister and Gehlot the party’s national president.

Govt to challenge HC order cancelling 36K PT jobs, says Mamata

KOLKATA, MAY 15 (PTI): West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday said that her government will challenge the Calcutta High Court order cancelling jobs of around 36,000 primary teachers in state-sponsored and -aided schools. She also urged those teachers who lost their jobs and their family members not to be depressed as her government is with them. The CM also alleged that those teachers lost their jobs because of the ongoing agitation of the state government employees demanding a hike in their DA and bringing it at par with the central government staff. “We have been getting appeals from the families of these 36,000 (teachers) who lost their jobs. I feel very bad. We have decided to move the division bench,” Banerjee told reporters at the state secretariat.

MAY 15 (PTI): A court here has issued a notice to Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge in a Rs 100-crore defamation case filed against him for “defamatory” remarks against the Bajrang Dal and comparing it to the outlawed PFI in his party’s Karnataka poll manifesto. The notice was issued by the court on May 12 on a petition filed by Hindu Suraksha Parishad national president Hitesh Bhardwaj. The date for

filing of reply to the notice has been fixed for July 10.

“That the respondent issued an election manifesto before the state of Karnataka for the elections. In the said manifesto, at para number 10, the defendant

issued defamatory statements against the Bajrang Dal, a unit of the Hindu Suraksha Parishad, by declaring to ban the organisation and comparing it to outlawed organisations like the Popular Front of India (PFI)...,” the petitioner has submitted. The central government had banned the PFI last year. The petitioner’s lawyer, Lalit Garg, on Monday said a few days ago, Bhardwaj had filed the defamation suit before the court here.

Where no rule is rule

Anygovernment that sincerely believes it has the mandate of the people will not shirk its responsibility to respond to the cry for justice and rule of law heard since the past decades the writ of the legally constituted government has ceased to be effective and instead a world of parallel authorities have exerted their writ through fear and intimidation of unarmed and unorganised people. Regional political parties in Nagaland beginning with the NpF and later its offshoot, the Ndpp, have been ruling the state since 2003 and during which, the writ of the constitutionally elected government has been greatly compromised as corruption and extortion became the order of the day. The resentment against unabated and illegal taxations were reflected through massive public rallies across Nagaland since 2012. Echoing the same concern of the past decades, the confederation of Nagaland chamber of commerce and Industry(cNccI) has said the business community in dimapur is on the verge of “breakdown” due to unabated and multiple taxations imposed by 18 factions on trade and business. At the press conference at dimapur on May 12, cNccI also demanded to know from the ‘opposition-less government’ as to whether these multiple taxations on business are legal or not. It may be recalled that the state government had issued notifications twice –on June 22,2009 and reaffirmed on June 12,2012-banning collections in any form at check gates and highways. The Gauhati High court Kohima Bench had in a landmark judgment on June 3,2014 had banned all collections in any form by cSOs. In 2012 AcAUT Nagaland had organised a rally calling on the government to implement the ban orders by the state government besides a massive rally was organised in 2013 against all forms of collection. confirming the worst that the ruling party /alliance governments are not inclined to act on facts, even the report of the three-member High power committee (Hpc) set up by the government in 2014 to look into illegal collections submitted its report in 2015 has been kept under wraps. These have added to the woes of the citizens besides hampering the economic growth of the state which directly and adversely affect people. It would seem that factions, some of who have “resurrected” in the post-1997 period, have made taxations as the main purpose of their existence. Over and above all illegal taxes, remains another serious issue of monumental corruption in the government. No project in Nagaland can be completed within the budgeted amount since there are many demanding their share of taxes. projects meant to benefit people have been turned into ATMs by corrupt government system as thousands of crore rupees are siphoned off by cost overruns. Blatant corruption has benefitted those in power while extortion has been a boon for parallel authorities. corruption has eroded the principles of governance and in turn severely compromised the writ of the constitutionally mandated government. When legally constituted governments offer passive resistance on challenges on their authority, it only encourages self-styled authorities to believe they have legitimacy to enforce their writ through threat and use of force. Rampant corruption at government levels, bogus employees, backdoor appointments, siphoning of money, anti-social syndrome and criminal syndicates is the sum total of lack of governance in Nagaland.

daily devotion

The Habit of Rising to the Occasion

…that you may know what is the hope of His calling… —Ephesians 1:18

Remember that you have been saved so that the life of Jesus may be manifested in your body (see 2 Corinthians 4:10). Direct the total energy of your powers so that you may achieve everything your election as a child of God provides; rise every time to whatever occasion may come your way.

You did not do anything to achieve your salvation, but you must do something to exhibit it. You must “work out your own salvation” which God has worked in you already (Philippians 2:12). Are your speech, your thinking, and your emotions evidence that you are working it “out”? If you are still the same miserable, grouchy person, set on having your own way, then it is a lie to say that God has saved and sanctified you.

God is the Master Designer, and He allows adversities into your life to see if you can jump over them properly— “By my God I can leap over a wall” (Psalm 18:29). God will never shield you from the requirements of being His son or daughter. First Peter 4:12 says, “Beloved, do not think it strange concerning the fiery trial which is to try you, as though some strange thing happened to you….” Rise to the occasion— do what the trial demands of you. It does not matter how much it hurts as long as it gives God the opportunity to manifest the life of Jesus in your body.

May God not find complaints in us anymore, but spiritual vitality— a readiness to face anything He brings our way. The only proper goal of life is that we manifest the Son of God; and when this occurs, all of our dictating of our demands to God disappears. Our Lord never dictated demands to His Father, and neither are we to make demands on God. We are here to submit to His will so that He may work through us what He wants. Once we realize this, He will make us broken bread and poured-out wine with which to feed and nourish others.

Speeches on 72nd anniversary of the Naga Plebiscite Day

Messageby(Retd)Gen.ThinoselieMKeyho,PresidentNNC,Kohima SpeechofYilowHumtsoe, actingpresidentof NNC(ParentBody)

My dear citizens of Nagaland, Today, we have stepped into the 73rd year since the Naga people put their thumb impressions in favour of Naga Sovereignty in that historic Voluntary Plebiscite Day on 16th May, 1951. On the occasion of celebrating the 73rd Naga Plebiscite Day today, I convey my heartfelt greetings and best wishes to all our Naga people wherever they may be. Let us give thanks to God, the Almighty for piloting us throughout to come this far.

On this auspicious occasion, I am appealing to the conscience of all the Naga people, particularly the elite group to look back with seriousness that we have come this far due to the National Movement under the Naga National Political Institution of ‘Naga National Council’ (NNC) which was formed in 1946 based on the commitment made in the Memorandum to the Simon Commission in 1929 which recorded the truth that Nagas are not Indians and the Naga area is not within the Indian Union.

Let us refresh our mind with what Jawaharlal Nerhu, the first Prime Minister of India said on 19th August, 1946 in connection with the proposal of Robert Reid for creation of Crown Colony, “the tribal areas are defined as being those long frontiers of India which are neither part of India nor Burma, nor Indian States nor of any foreign power. “ This statement itself has confirmed that Nagas are not Indians and their land is not within the Indian Union.

Why a Voluntary Plebiscite was called for?

When the British Government was about to leave this part of the Globe, Nagas have declared their Independence on 14th August, 1947, one day ahead of Indian Independence, and cabled it to the UN which

My dear Naga brothers and sisters, I greet you all in the name of our Almighty God. It gives me immense pleasure and pride to address you all on this historic day of the Nagas. It was on this day in 1951 that the Nagas under the aegis of the Naga National Council boldly stated, openly expressed and exhibited to the world the desire and aspiration of the Naga people to live as a free and sovereign nation; made a solemn and irrevocable pledge of the desire and the right to determine our own future, popularly known as the PLEBISCITE of May 16, 1951. A remarkable feature of the PLEBISCITE was the overwhelming 99.9% in favour of Naga Independence which today stands as a testimony of the unity of the Nagas and the Nagas’ affirmation of the Memorandum to the Simon Commission of 1929 as well as the declaration of Naga Independence on 14th August, 1947. It conveys a strong twin-message: the spirit and aspirations of the Naga people and the resentment against the forceful occupation by India and the territorial division of the Naga inhabited areas without the knowledge and consent of our people. We celebrate this historic day to contemplate as to why we have a sense of pride and think ourselves fortunate to be Nagas and also to rededicate ourselves to

UN acknowledged and filed it. But Indian Government without least regards to the historical facts forcefully occupied the areas which were earlier under the then British Government including Nagaland. Therefore, the Naga National Council, under the leadership of the Father of the Nation, A.Z Phizo, in order to demonstrate their stand clear to the Indian people and to the world, decided to conduct a voluntary Plebiscite. And in this Voluntary Plebiscite, Nagas have proved their stand to the world beyond doubt by voting 99.9% in favour of Naga Sovereignty. And through this Plebiscite, Naga people had given their mandate to the Naga National Council which remains the cornerstone of the National Movement.

On that Plebiscite Day itself, NNC declared that ‘Naga people want peace, Naga people do not want war and they do not want their children to live in battlefields. ‘ They have also made it clear to the Indian brothers and sisters that ‘Nagas are not their enemy. ‘ They were only putting across their right democratically that they are not Indians.

In spite of repeatedly proving our stand as free people beyond doubt, the Indian Government again imposed their first Parliamentary General Elections of 1952 in Nagaland but that was totally rejected by the Naga people on the ground that Nagas are not Indians. In fact, India should feel ashamed for their act of moral violation of conscience.

We all know that 16 Point Agreement was a mischievous deed which was done by deception because the so called agreement was done without the NNC/FGN with absolute mandate for whom the agreement was proposed. Therefore, the agreement brought more bloodshed to the Nagas. Should the Indian

Government takes this as an agreement, why entered into so many agreements again like the Ceasefire Agreement of 1964, the infamous ‘Shillong Accord’ of 1975, the ‘Framework Agreement’ of 2015 and the ‘Agreed Position’ of 2017? How many agreements Indian Government will propose to enter into for solving just one political problem?

Nagas are one nation and people but why we have too many factions today. In a way Nagas have to blame ourselves to some extent but for the real reason behind the screen is we are fragmented into many factions and still some of such talk going on is due to the ‘divide and rule’ policy of the Government of India. It will be our ill luck if Nagas do not realise this play. The Indian leaders bitterly criticised the British Government Policy of ‘divide and rule’ during their pre- Independence period, but today, the Indian secret agencies are playing the same game with the Nagas which they have copied from the Britishers.

It is high time for the Naga leaders to retrospect and reason together and rally under the banner of NNC again to salute the past glories of our patriots and warriors and move forward together for the fulfillment of our aspiration for Naga Sovereignty.

Let me conclude by reminding our people with what NNC President, A. Z. Phizo says in his Plebiscite Day speech at Kohima on 16th May 1951- “We want to make our country a place of happiness, of security and of rest. We hope and we cherish that we can make our country a meeting place of the East and an understanding centre of the world. Above anything else, we want to be free as a distinct nation and we shall be free.”

May God Bless the Naga people. Kuknalim.

Dear Naga people, On this occasion of Naga National Plebiscite Day, I on behalf of the NNC (Parent Body) wish all the Naga people and the national workers in particular. Seventy-two years ago on this day, the Naga people conducted a National Plebiscite (referendum) in the presence of the Government of India, to demonstrate and put forth the fate of the Nagas to be a free and sovereign people and nation, for peace and development.

Today as a sovereign people and nation we celebrate this historic National Day. And we call for the Government of India to officially recognise this democratic right of freedom, As this sovereign right is renowned by the world at large and particularly the Government of India. After more than 7 decades of fighting with blood, sweat, tears and immense suffering the Nagas at this point ought to be recognised as a sovereign nation, and therefore we urge all the friendly countries near and far to officially recognise Nagaland as a democratic nation.

We also remember and honour our national workers who sacrificed their lives for the purpose of Nagaland to be a free and independent nation.

History is certain that Nagas are not Indians and Nagaland as a whole was never politically a part of India. It is very apparent even to outsiders that Nagas are distinct and different from India, and many leaders, officials and tourists who visit Nagaland also recognise and acknowledge this fact.

The Naga people cannot continue to stay under the forceful occupation of India and Myanmar (Burma) as we are historically and rightfully a sovereign people and nation.

Today, we are witnessing communal violence and chaos designed by the imperialist political agents in the North-east region to self-destruct so as to occupy and dominate the

pursue the Naga National Cause with renewed vigour and vitality.

Nagas from the very beginning have always been fierce lovers of equality and freedom. Our ancestors believed that equality and freedom are unquestionable values and principles by which people should live by and live for. Each village was a sovereign republic and enjoyed unquestionable freedom and no matter how powerful a village was, it did not have the intention or desire to conquer other villages, threaten other villages into submission or to rule or dominate over other villages. We lack even the colonial-imperial vocabularies like “submission” or “surrender”.

It is no doubt true that powerful or mother villages were recognised in terms of certain nominal tax or tribute, however, the practice was more of recognition either of their political leadership or for customary roles rather than surrender of their autonomy. The autonomy and freedom of any Naga village was non-negotiable and inalienable.

The NNC was democratically formed by the Naga representatives on 2nd February 1946, based on clear identity of God’s creation of the Naga race, history, tradition and culture; as a Political Institution on the Principle of Non-Violence and has always sought to resolve all issues through democratic

and constitutional means. The Plebiscite was conducted under the leadership of the fourth President of NNC, A. Z. Phizo, the Father of the Naga Nation. In his Plebiscite Speech the policy of non-violence is explicitly outlined by the Father of the Nation, when he says:

“Most of the histories of human freedom were recorded in human blood. Most of the foundations of free nations were built on human bones and crushed skulls. But we want our national independence to be holy and pure. We do not want to mix our freedom, and our independence with human blood. We are determined to extricate ourselves clear with understanding, by goodwill and through reason, so that we may continue to live in freedom and enjoy national independence.”

The Naga Plebiscite of 1951 expresses the Naga aspiration in the clearest term, it was a political statement and declaration of our aspiration and that the Naga National Movement is a peoples’ movement for liberation. The Plebiscite was more than a declaration, it was an oath. Some gave their thump impression with blood. This was to show their utmost seriousness, that it is a matter of life and death. It may be recalled that oath is the final judgment in our traditional context. The Plebiscite

region entirely, as we can see through the events taking place in Manipur. The raging and flaming situation in Manipur is an eye-opener and an actual example for all the people in the region and the world at large. All these are the outcome of the crafty agenda of ethnic cleansing by the imperialist and it is a huge threat and danger to the indigenous people in the North-east region.

The unimaginable and unforgettable communal havoc is created based on the religious agenda of the extremists, Therefore, the North-East people must comprehend this clearly to save ourselves and the region.

The political parties of India will come and go, a party will rule for a period of time and go, and a particular party cannot permanently rule in this contemporary world, therefore, the political party of any colour must not fool the North-east people as we have seen through and enough in the past. And we the North-East Indigenous people must stand united to fight and overcome the imperialist policy and agenda, and to protect our political rights of freedom to rule ourselves for the betterment and development of our region and also for peace and tranquillity to prevail in the entire North-east region.

As for the Nagas in the Homeland, we need to be cautious and aware of all these ethnic cleansing pursuits happening around us, and we must be united to confront all political, religious and land domination agendas of the imperialist so as to overcome all challenges in the days to come for freedom of our Homeland.

In conclusion, I must say that those factions who have already compromised the Naga People’s sovereign rights of Freedom as a people and Nation must step down voluntarily and stop being a hindrance to the freedom that our leaders and people stood for. Praise the Lord- Nagaland for Christ. Kuknalim.

was necessitated in the first place due to the nature and failure of Nagas’ relationship with India. Our ancestors were honorable people and their word was their law. The British recognized this custom and treated the Nagas as honorable people. Despite several conflicts and agreements between the two, no written document was necessitated. But when the Indian leaders made the first agreement with the Nagas, they neither honored our customs nor their promises. We had to make a written agreement - the 9 point agreement (Hydari agreement). Even after getting written assurance from the representatives of the Government of India, a letter signed by Bordoloi and Hydari themselves, the agreement never saw the light of day. Moreover, successive Indian leaders failed to uphold even the promises made to the Nagas by their most venerated leaders like Gandhi and Rajagopalachari. These were extremely valuable lessons for the Nagas. It made us to wonder what we are up against, a people whose honor is questionable. In short, the Naga experiences of betrayal and treachery by the Indian leaders was educative; the NNC had to recourse to extreme measures, we had to mobilize ourselves for a political action, to empower ourselves; this realization

necessitated the plebiscite.

The commemoration of the Plebiscite Day gives us an opportunity to ponder on our foundational and fundamental beliefs and principles, the legitimate right of the Nagas to choose our own destiny and also bring to the attention of the world that the Nagas still continue to suffer against her will in the imperialistic hands of occupational forces, viz., India and Myanmar. Modern civilization with its values, including democratic values have unfortunately till date failed to truly educate these occupational forces that no people group, big or small, can be forced to live under the domination of another against his/her desire. In spite of our unfulfilled dream and aspiration to live as a free nation, we still remain proud and continue to live with dignity because on this day, more than Seven Decades ago, the Naga people boldly stood up to express our resentment against the dehumanizing practice of imperialism.

May the Almighty God who guided our people in the past and gave us courage to so boldly declare to the world continue to guide our path and instil the same desire in each one of us today as we celebrate and commemorate the Naga Plebiscite Day. KUKNALIM

Is loneliness really as damaging to your health as smoking 15 cigarettes a day?

Vivek Murthy, the US surgeon general, recently warned that “being socially disconnected” has a similar effect on mortality as smoking up to 15 cigarettes a day. This statement was widely reported in the media, including in the Washington Post, the Times and the Daily Mail. But where does this “15 cigarettes a day” figure come from?

Dr Murthy is referring to a study published in 2010 that explored social relationships and mortality rates. The researchers combined the data from 148 studies on the topic, in what is known as a “meta-analysis”, to arrive at a more robust statistical answer to their questions. The meta-analysis contained data on 300,000 par-

ticipants who were studied for an average of seven and a half years. The researchers explored the extent to which social relationships can influence the risk of premature death, the aspects of social relationships that are most likely to predict an early death, and any factors that mitigate the risk.

They concluded that lonely people are 50% more likely to die prematurely than people with strong social relationships. They then used a statistical tool called “random effects models” to compute that the influence of social relationships on the risk of death is comparable to well-established risk factors for death, such as smoking cigarettes. Although the method-

ology the researchers used was sound – and loneliness is certainly damaging for health – it could be argued that the “equivalent to 15 cigarettes a day” analogy is sensationalist.

The researchers also pointed out that the health risks of loneliness are similar to alcohol consumption (more than six drinks a day) and exceed other risk factors, such as physical inactivity and obesity. Yet these comparisons are rarely mentioned in the media or keynote speeches as they don’t have the same impact as smoking.

The smoking comparison also has the potential to add to the burden of people who feel lonely and exacerbate the stigma associated with loneliness. However, the

effectiveness of the analogy cannot be underestimated.

Thirteen years on, the paper continues to raise awareness about loneliness and the associated damaging health consequences.

Studies that didn’t grab the headlines

Other studies that are just as robust, but perhaps fail to grab the headlines in the same way, have likewise shown a range of health conditions associated with loneliness and social isolation, including heart disease and stroke, type 2 diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis and cancer. Even recovery following heart surgery can be compromised by isolation.

Mental health conditions can also be triggered by loneliness, including loss of

hope, depression, problems with sleep, alcohol abuse and other psychiatric disorders. Lonely people also have heightened sensitivity to social threat. It is believed loneliness has an evolutionary function that is felt in a similar way to hunger or thirst and is a signal to people to change their lifestyle and social connections. However, when loneliness becomes chronic it can be different to break out of and for people to know how to overcome the negative feelings they are experiencing.

Loneliness is also associated with an increased risk of developing dementia.

The number of people experiencing loneliness increased sharply during

the pandemic, including among young adults. The pandemic also accelerated societal transformations, such as remote working and online shopping, that have exacerbated the loneliness epidemic.

The need to address loneliness is further heightened by its costs to health services, businesses and economies. The annual cost of loneliness to the UK economy and UK private sector employers could be as high as £32 billion and £2.5 billion respectively.

So, while Dr Murthy is correct – loneliness can harm your health as much as smoking – there are also many other ways of measuring its harmful impacts.

THIRUV ANANTHAPURAM, MAY 15 (PTI):

The ruling CPI(M) in Kerala on Monday took a veiled dig at the Congress by asking it to safeguard its newly elected Karnataka MLAs from being poached by the BJP as was allegedly done by the saffron party in Goa amidst the Bharat Jodo Yatra.

Terming the Congress as being weak and incapable of taking on the BJP on its own, the CPI(M) batted for a state-wise alliance to defeat the saffron party in the 2024 general elections.

“A national-level alliance will not be helpful. We need to unite all the antiBJP groups at the state-level and defeat the BJP in each state. That is the only way forward,” CPI(M) state secretary M V Govindan said.

Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan had suggested a similar strategy a day ago.

Govindan said the contention that Congress was the only party capable of taking on the BJP was “only

“But there too, the Congress is in a weak position. Even now, they have internal conflicts,” he contended.

The CPI(M) state secretary said the Congress should focus on deciding a Chief Minister and cabinet ministers for Karnataka while remaining careful and vigilant against any alleged attempts by the BJP to poach their MLAs.

“Everyone knows that the BJP has the wherewithal to buy MLAs. It happened in Goa amidst the then ongoing Bharat Jodo Yatra,” he said.

The CPI(M) leader was referring to the crossing over of eight of the 11 Congress MLAs in Goa in September last year to the ruling BJP in the western state just months after the Assembly elections were held there.

Govindan asserted that the BJP was the biggest threat and the people want to defeat it. Therefore, all anti-BJP groups should come together to defeat it as one, he said.

NEW DELHI, MAY 15

After SEBI filed a fresh affidavit with the Supreme

Court to strengthen its case for a six-month extension of the deadline to complete the probing allegations of fraud and money laundering against Adani Group, Congress and other opposition parties cited the finance ministry’s July 2021 replies in Parliament to ask who was misleading. “The government stands by its reply in Lok Sabha on 19th July 2021 to Q. CHITRADURGA (KARNATAKA), MAY 15 (PTI):

A video of a group of villagers in this district on Monday allegedly refusing to pay their electricity bill citing the pre-poll promise of the Congress to give 200 units for free has gone viral. Among the five ‘guarantees’ that the party announced is the offer of 200 units of power a month to every household.

During campaigning for the May 10 Assembly elections in Karnataka, the Congress repeatedly said it would give a stamp of approval for these ‘guarantees’ in the maiden cabinet meeting on the first day of it assuming power in the State.

“We won’t pay,” a villager was heard telling electricity bill collector Gopi in the purported video where people are seen sitting on a platform under a peepal tree. The bill collector then tells them, “You have to pay the bill this month. Let’s see what the government says,” to which the villagers respond, “What can the government say?”

Gopi tells them if the government says it will give free power, then the electricity department will follow suit. “We will not pay. They (Congress) have said electricity is free, it will be free only,” another villager replies.

(PTI): Senior BJP leader and Union minister Nitin Gadkari on Monday asserted that votes are won on the basis of “politics of service” rather than on “posters and banners”.

He said he has now decided that he will not put up any posters or offer tea to people in his constituency in the next election as “those who have to vote will vote and those who do not will not”.

At the same time, he exuded confidence in increasing his winning margin in the next poll.

Gadkari was addressing a programme on the death anniversary of former vice president Bhairon Singh Shekhawat at Khachariyawas village in Sikar district of Rajasthan.

“I have fought the election in a very tough constituency. Everyone had asked me not to contest from there, but I fought with determination. Now I have decided that in the next election, I will not put up posters or banners, will not give tea or do anything else. Those who have to vote will vote and those who do not will not,” he said.

“Votes are obtained by ‘politics of service’, ‘politics of development’, welfare of the poor in villages, giving poor people health facilities,

employment to youth and good education to children,” he added.

The Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways said the concept of “politics of service” was brought in by RSS ideologue Pandit Deendayal Upadhyaya, and that he defined his politics on this concept.

“The biggest problem of politics is the emptiness of ideas. Bhairon Singh Shekhawat stayed with principles and never compromised with his ideology. Politics for Shekhawat was a medium to serve people and an instrument for socioeconomic reform,” he said. Gadkari, who represents Nagpur constituency, said the ‘politics of service’ does not come with talks, books or research, but with actions and deeds. He said the work on the Delhi-Jaipur electric highway is on and when electric buses will run, the ticket cost will be Rs 30 lesser to the (present) fare.

In the reply, the Minister stated that “SEBI is investigating some Adani Group companies with re-

gard to compliance with SEBI regulations. Further, the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) is investigating certain entities belonging to the Adani Group of companies under laws administered by it. He had gone on to state that Enforcement Directorate was not carrying out any investigation and that “SEBI had vide order dated January 16, 2016, directed depositories to freeze particular ben -

WPI inflation eases to 34-month low

NEW DELHI, MAY 15

(PTI): Wholesale prices in India fell for the first time in almost three years in April, as softening global commodity prices brought down food, fuel, and other input costs for producers.

WPI inflation has been on a declining trend for the last 11 months and came in at (-) 0.92 per cent in April.

This is the lowest level of wholesale price index (WPI) since June 2020, when inflation was at (-) 1.81 per cent. A negative WPI inflation, technically termed as deflation, means that overall wholesale prices have been falling year-onyear. The high base at 15.38 per cent in April 2022, also contributed to the decline in wholesale inflation in April this year. “Decline in the rate of inflation in April, 2023 is primarily contributed by fall in prices

Exports fall for 3rd consecutive month by 12.7 pc

NEW DELHI, MAY 15 (PTI): India’s exports contracted by 12.7 per cent, third month in a row, to USD 34.66 billion in April even as the trade deficit reduced to a 20-month low of USD 15.24 billion, the government data showed on Monday. The decline in exports is mainly on account of poor demand in India’s key destinations -- the Europe and the US -- and it may take some more months for the situation to improve.

The demand scenario is

“not looking very good as far as Europe is concerned, and the US also we have seen a decline in demand. For the next 2-3 months, I think the demand scenario does not look very optimistic,” DGFT (Director General of Foreign Trade) Santosh Kumar Sarangi told reporters here.

However, he expressed hope that things would change from September onwards. “There is a possibility that opening up of Chinese economy combined with some boost in demand in the

Europe and the US economy from August-September onwards might give a boost to global exports,” he said. Imports too declined by about 14 per cent, fifth month in a row, to USD 49.9 billion as against USD 58.06 billion recorded in the same month last year, the data showed. Trade deficit in April last year stood at USD 18.36 billion. The previous lowest level was recorded in April 2021, when the deficit stood at USD 15.10 billion. On imports, Sarangi

Ecuador’s President to face impeachment trial

QUITO, MAY 15 (IANS): Ecuadorian President Guillermo Lasso will face an impeachment trial on Tuesday for alleged embezzlement, Virgilio Saquicela, president of the National Assembly, has announced.

According to Saquicela, the trial will begin at 10 a.m. in keeping with legislative regulations after a motion to hold impeachment proceedings was approved last week, reports Xinhua news agency. Lasso, a 67-year-old former banker, is accused by the opposition of embezzling funds through a contract signed between state-owned oil tanker fleet Flota Petrolera Ecuatoriana and the privately-owned company Amazonas Tanker, for the rental of vessels to ship hydrocarbons.

Thailand’s opposition wins big after voters reject army-backed government

BANGKOK, MAY 15 (AGENCIES): Thailand’s opposition secured a stunning election win on Sunday after trouncing parties allied with the military, setting the stage for a flurry of dealmaking over forming a government in a bid to end nearly a decade of conservative, army-backed rule.

The liberal Move Forward party and the populist Pheu Thai Party were far out in front with 99% of votes counted, but it was far from certain either will form the next government, with parliamentary rules written by the military after its 2014 coup skewed in its favour.

To rule, the opposition parties will need to strike deals and muster support from multiple camps, including members of a junta-appointed Senate that has sided with military parties and gets to vote on who becomes prime minister and form the next administration.

Sunday’s election was the latest bout in a longrunning battle for power between Pheu Thai, the populist juggernaut of the billionaire Shinawatra family, and a nexus of old mon-

But the staggering performance by Move Forward, riding a wave of support from young voters, will test the resolve of Thailand’s establishment and ruling parties after it came close to a clean sweep of the capital Bangkok on a platform of institutional reform and dismantling monopolies.

Move Forward came top, followed closely by Pheu Thai, the preliminary results showed. According to a Reuters calculation,

both were set to win more than triple the number of seats of Palang Pracharat, the political vehicle of the junta, and the army-backed United Thai Nation party. Move Forward leader Pita Limjaroenrat, a 42-year-old former executive of a ride-hailing app, described the outcome as “sensational” and vowed to stay true to his party’s values when forming a government. “It will be anti- dictator-backed, military-backed parties, for sure,” he told reporters. “It’s safe to assume that minority government is no longer possible here in Thailand.”

He said he remained open to an alliance with Pheu Thai, but has set his sights set on being prime minister.

“It is now clear the Move Forward Party has received the overwhelming support from the people around the country,” he said on Twitter.

MAJOR BLOW

The preliminary results will be a crushing blow for the military and its allies. But with parliamentary rules on their side and influential figures behind them and involved behind the scenes, they could still have a role in government.

Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha, a retired general who led the last coup, had campaigned on continuity after nine years in charge, warning a change in government could lead to conflict.

On Sunday, he slipped away quietly from his United Thai Nation party headquarters, where there were few supporters to be seen. A handful of staff sat beside plates of uneaten food as a giant television screen showed a live speech by Move Forward’s leader.

Lahore HC to hear Imran Khan’s bail plea today

LAHORE, MAY 15

(PTI): Pakistan’s former prime minister Imran Khan on Monday appeared before the Lahore High Court, which fixed his bail hearing on Tuesday in the terrorism cases registered against him following his arrest in the Al-Qadir Trust corruption case that sparked violent protests by his supporters. Khan was accompanied by his wife Bushra Bibi, who was granted prearrest bail till May 23 by the high court in the Al-Qadir Trust case. “The LHC granted pre-arrest bail to

The LHC Registrar’s Office has raised an objection for not attaching the arrested copies of Supreme Court and Islamabad High Court orders,” a court official told PTI. Justice Safdar Saleem Shahid had fixed May 16 for the hearing of Khan’s plea after his counsel assured provision of the court’s orders.

DHAKA, MAY 15 (AP):

Rescuers on Monday evacuated about 1,000 people trapped by seawater 3.6 meters (12 feet) deep along western Myanmar’s coast after a powerful cyclone injured hundreds and cut off communications. Six deaths were reported, but the true impact was not yet clear in one of Asia’s least developed countries.

Strong winds injured more than 700 of about 20,000 people who were sheltering in sturdier buildings on the highlands of Sittwe township, such as monasteries, pagodas and schools, according to a leader of the Rakhine Youths Philanthropic Association in Sittwe. He asked not to be named due to fear of reprisals from the authorities in the military-run country. Seawater raced into more than 10 low-lying wards near the shore as Cyclone Mocha made landfall in Rakhine state Sunday afternoon, he said.

Residents moved to roofs and higher floors, while the wind and storm surge prevented immediate rescue. “After 4 pm yesterday, the storm weakened a bit, but the water did not fall

back. Most of them sat on the roof and at the high places of their houses the whole night. The wind blew all night,” the rescue group leader said.

Water was still about 1.5 meters (5 feet) high in flooded areas later Monday, but rescues were being made as the wind calmed and the sun rose in the sky. He asked civil society organisations and authorities to send aid and help evacuate residents.

Six deaths were reported by Myanmar media and rescue groups. Several injuries were reported in neighbouring Bangladesh, which was spared the predicted direct hit. Mocha made landfall near Sitt we township with winds blowing up to 209 kilometers (130 miles) per hour, Myanmar’s Meteorological Department said.

goVeRNmeNT oF NAgALAND

By midday Monday, it had weakened to a tropical depression, according to the India Meteorological Department.

The State Administration Council issued disaster declarations for 17 townships in Rakhine state. High winds crumpled cell phone towers, but in videos collected by local media before communications were lost, deep water raced through streets and wind blew off roofs. Myanmar’s military information office said the storm had damaged houses and electrical transformers in Sittwe, Kyaukpyu, and Gwa townships. It said roofs were torn off buildings on the Coco Islands, about 425 kilometers (264 miles) southwest of the country’s largest city, Yangon.

Leipzig shock Bremen late in Bundesliga

BERLIN, MAY 15

(IANS): Leipzig bolstered their chances for a European spot after the Bulls scored twice late in the match to secure a 2-1 comeback victory over Werder Bremen, concluding the 32nd round.

Both sides experienced a slow start to the encounter, so spectators had to wait until the 20th minute when Timo Werner unleashed the first threatening shot on target, reports Xinhua.

Werner continued to make an impact as he crossed the ball into the path of Mohamed Simakan, who headed just wide at the half-hour mark.

Dominik Szoboszlai nearly opened the scoring before the break, but his free kick struck the outside of the post.

Werder finally came to life after the restart, with Romano Schmid collecting a loose ball before narrowly missing from a promising position ten minutes into

the second half. Bremen stayed active and tested Leipzig’s defense as Marvin Ducksch capitalized on Mitchell Weiser’s build-up work before challenging Leipzig goalkeeper Janis Blaswich from close range

at the hour mark. The hosts believed they had scored against the run of play, but Christopher Nkunku’s goal was disallowed due to a preceding foul by Simakan.

Bremen stunned Leipzig with their next

Leipzig pressed relentlessly for the draw and

reaped the rewards in the 87th minute when Willi Orban headed home the equalizer at the back post following Nkunku’s cross.

The Bulls continued their offensive push and astonished Bremen with the 2-1 win in injury time as Nkunku weaved through the visitors’ territory before passing to Szoboszlai, who poked home the winner from close range.

“Leipzig threw every man up front, and we failed to salvage one point. If you want to win against a club like Leipzig, you must be focused for over 90 minutes,” said Bremen coach Ole Werner.

“It was a challenging game against a well-defending Bremen team. We lacked precision overall, but I believe we secured a deserved victory today,” said Leipzig coach Marco Rose.

Elsewhere, Bayer Leverkusen played out a 1-1 draw with relegationthreatened Stuttgart.

SUZHOU, MAY 15 (PTI):

Star shuttlers Kidambi Srikanth and PV Sindhu suffered contrasting defeats as India were knocked out of the Sudirman Cup badminton tournament after suffering an embarrassing 0-5 loss to Malaysia in their second Group C match here on Monday.

A day after losing 1-4 to Chinese Taipei, India produced yet another listless show against Commonwealth Games champions Malaysia to bow out of the world mixed team championships at the group stage for the second successive time. In the last edition at Vantaa, Finland, India also couldn’t make it to the knockout stage.

While Srikanth was too erratic in men’s singles contest, Sindhu showed great fightback in the decider after squandering an opening game advantage only to go down in the end to world no. 30 Goh Jin Wei. It was always going to be a

tough ask for Dhruv Kapila and Ashwini Ponnappa to outwit the world no. 8 pair of Goh Soon Huat and Lai Shevon Jemie but the Indian combination tried their heart out before losing 16-21

17-21 in 35 minutes.

An error-prone Srikanth then couldn’t get India’s campaign back on track, going down 16-21

11-21 to world no. 8 Lee

Zii Jia in a lop-sided men’s singles contest. World no.

12 Sindhu then erased a 2-11 deficit in the third game but failed to go the distance, losing 21-14 10-21 20-22 to

Goh in women’s singles as India conceded a 0-3 lead to Malaysia in the five-match tie. “It is a bit disappointing. In the third game, I was trailing by 8 points but I came back. Coming so close and losing those two points was very disappointing,” Sindhu said.

In the last two matches, world no. 5 Chirag Shetty and Satwiksairaj Rankireddy lost 18-21 19-21 to Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik in men’s doubles, while Gayatri Gopichand and Treesa Jolly went down 15-21 13-21 as India drew a blank.

Gulveer wins 10,000m gold, books ticket to Asian Athletics C’ships

RANCHI, MAY 15 (PTI):

Uttar Pradesh’s Gulveer Singh booked his ticket to the upcoming Asian Athletics Championships by winning the men’s 10,000m gold on the opening day of the Federation Cup Senior Athletics Championships here.

The Asian Athletics Championships is scheduled to be held from July 12 to 16 in Bangkok. Gulveer won with a time of 29:05.90 seconds, which was better than the Asian Championships qualifying time of 29:30.

The top 11 athletes in the 25-lap race were be-

low the Asian qualification time. Gujarat’s international runner Murli Kumar Gavit, who finished 11th in the field of 35 athletes, clocked 29:27.76.

Of the 45 athletes who started the race, 10 did not finish. The women’s 10,000m race was won by Maharashtra’s Sanjivani Jadhav, with a time of 33:32.73, nearly 30 seconds slower than the Asian qualifying time of 33 minutes.

Of the five athletes that took the field four finished the race.

Away from the track, Uttar Pradesh’s Tanya Chaudhary won the gold

medal in the women’s hammer throw with a distance of 60.54m. But she missed the Asian qualification standard of 62.03m. Tanya had a series of 57.39m, 51.76m, 55.73m, no mark, 60.54m

and no mark. International thrower Sarita R Singh, also from UP, finished a close second with a throw of 60.45m. Punjab’s Manpreet Kaur was third at 57.08m.

There was excitement in the men’s 1500m heats as Haryana’s Aman topped his heat with a time of 3:46.04 seconds, which was better than the Asian qualifying standard of 3:47.84.

Aman was among 12 athletes who made the cut for the final. Johnson finished second behind Aman in the heats with a time of 3:49.21. It was heartbreak for Delhi’s international quarter-miler Amoj Jacob

as he strained his hamstring and pulled out of the fifth and last heat. Rajesh Ramesh of Tamil Nadu breached the continental qualification mark of 46.17 seconds in the 400m semifinals. He clocked 46.13 seconds.

In the women’s 400m heats, two athletes were successful in booking tickets to the Asian Championship. Aishwarya Mishra of Maharashtra covered 400m in 52.85 seconds to better the qualifying time of 53.54 seconds, while in another heat R Vithya Ramraj of Tamil Nadu crossed the finish line in 53.32 seconds.

SEPANG (MALAYSIA),

MAY 15 (IANS): The Honda Racing India team wrapped up the actionpacked Round 2 of the 2023 FIM Asia Road Racing Championship (ARRC) with overall 2 points on Monday.

Honda Racing India team’s rider Kavin Samaar Quintal put together a consistent performance in Sunday’s AP250cc race 1 of Asia Production 250cc (AP250cc), which became even more challenging in the hot and sweltering weather conditions at the Sepang International Circuit.

After making a good start from the 16th position, the 17-year-old Quintal couldn’t surge ahead till the 5th lap. By lap 6 the Indian rider overtook 1 rider. Keeping calm and maintaining his pace, the young lad from Chennai finished in 14th position -- just on the edge of the points as several riders ahead made mistakes. His best lap of 2:27.647 earned him and the team 2 valuable points in the championship.

Fresh from his 16th place qualifier and 14th place finish in Sunday’s outing, Quintal was keen to make a forward step in Monday’s race 2 but he could not finish the race after his bike developed a technical snag in lap 2 and

time this season, as the Frenchman had been struggling with a lingering injury since his return, reports Xinhua. However, the No. 10 was dealt a blow as he limped off just 21 minutes into the game, making way for Arkadiusz Milik. The home side controlled the game but couldn’t break through the defense until the 55th minute when Federico Chiesa assisted

Nicolo Fagioli to score.

Later, Bremer headed in a goal to seal the win.

With the victory, Juve still rank second with 66 points, three points ahead of Inter Milan.

Elsewhere, Monza, already safe from relegation, stunned newly-crowned Napoli 2-0 in a dead rubber. Roma’s top-four hopes were dented after a goalless draw with Bologna.

Quintal has notched up 2 points in Round 2 here at the Sepang International Circuit maintaining his presence in the top 15 in the championship overall.

On the other hand, his fellow teammate Mohsin Paramban from Mallapuram had put in a fighting ride to end Race 1 of AP250cc in 17th position 3 places higher than his qualifying position of 20th.

Despite a good start which pushed the 20-yearold rider 1 position ahead to 18th by the 2nd lap of today’s race 2, an overtake by another rider during the 3rd lap pulled him down to 19th. From thereon he continued to maintain his position until the last lap where he crashed out due to an attempt to chase another rider ahead of him. Unfortunately, the rookie rider couldn’t score any points in the Sepang round.

With the end of round 2, the Honda Racing India

team has earned an additional two valuable points, bringing their total to 11 points thus far in the 2023 FIM Asia Road Racing Championship (ARRC).

“It’s not the weekend the team was hoping for. The hot temperatures of the weekend made everything more critical. The round started on a positive note for both Kavin and Mohsin but race 2 brought various challenges for them,” said Tsutsumu Otani - President, CEO & Managing Director, Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India.

“Each round presents new opportunities for growth & experience, and I am confident that our team will learn from these challenges and improve their performance in the upcoming rounds. We are still in the early stages. Our riders will continue to refine their skills and work towards earning more valuable po”nts for the team,” he said.

Gill’s maiden IPL ton powers GT in play-offs

AHMEDABAD, MAY 15

(PTI): Shubman Gill hit his maiden IPL century as Gujarat Titans became the first team to seal a place in the play-offs of the ongoing edition with a convincing 34-run win over Sunrisers Hyderabad here on Monday.

Gill slammed 101 off just 58 balls with the help of 13 fours and one six, and added 147 runs for the second wicket with Sai Sudharsan (47 off 36 balls), to power GT to 188 for nine despite a late comeback by Sunrisers Hyderabad’s Bhuvneshwar Kumar (5/30).

With the bat, SRH were never in the hunt as they kept losing wickets at regular intervals to be restricted to 154 for nine.

Heinrich Klaasen (66 off 44) played a lone hand for SRH, while Mohammed Shami (4/21) and Mohit Sharma (4/28) picked up four wickets apiece to shine with the ball for GT. SRH were off to a disastrous start, losing the wickets of Anmolpreet Singh, Abhishek Sharma and Rahul Tripathi inside the third over, with the scoreboard reading just 12.

It beca me worse for SRH in their must-win game

as Shami picked up his third wicket in the form of rival skipper Aiden Markram an over later, and then, Mohit dismissed Sanvir Singh and Abdul Samad in the seventh over to reduce the visitors to 49 for six.

This season’s campaign was as good as over for SRH

as Marco Jansen became Mohit’s third victim in the ninth over.

Reeling at 59 for seven, SRH finally managed a partnership through Klaasen and Bhuvneshwar (27), the duo adding 68 runs for the eighth wicket.

Wrestlers to take their protest to global forum, approach Olympians for support

at the protest site. “Some people tried to disrupt our protest. The last time it happened was when we were bringing our bedding at the protest site (at the start of the agitation). “We are being stalked. People make recording and click photos... and when we tell them (to stop), they do not listen. Some unknown people (women) also tried to sleep here (inside the tent put up by wrestlers),” Vinesh said.

NEW DELHI, MAY 15

(PTI): The protesting wrestlers on Monday decided to make their “agitation global” by approaching Olympic medallists and athletes from other countries and warned that if their demand for the arrest of former national federation (WFI) chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh is not heeded to, a “big call” will be taken after May 21.

India’s top wrestlers

Olympic medallists Bajrang Punia, Sakshi Malik and Asian Games gold medallist Vinesh Phogat among others are protesting at Jantar

Mantar here for the last 23 days, demanding the arrest of Brij Bhushan for allegedly sexually harassing women grapplers, including a minor.

“We will make this protest global. We will approach Olympians and Olympic medallists in other countries. We will write to them asking them for their support,” said 2018 Jakarta Asian Games gold medallist Vinesh.

She alleged that some elements tried to tarnish their protest on Sunday night and also said that the wrestlers were being stalked

loss on clay for Alcaraz this year after getting beaten by Cameron Norrie in the Rio de Janeiro final in February.

“Women, whom we don’t know are being sent inside at night... things are being done, which we do not want should happen at the protest site... which bring a bad name and tarnish our fight for truth and justice.”

She also said the wrestlers will not just confine themselves to the protest site but also try to make every citizen in the country aware of their plight.

“We are getting a feeling at Jantar Mantar that we are being restricted and pushed into a corner. So the more we agitate at other places and let the people elsewhere also know, the better.

GT suffered an early blow as they lost Wriddhiman Saha for a duck in the third ball of the innings, nicking one to Abhishek Sharma at second slip.

After a sedate start, GT broke the shackles in the third over with Gill and Sudharsan hitting Bhuvneshwar for three exquisite boundaries to pick up 15 runs. Having found his touch, the in-form Gill pulled, drove and flicked to collect four consecutive boundaries off Fazalhaq Farooqi.

Both Sudharsan and Gill dealt in boundaries to take GT to 65 for one in six overs.

Gill, in particular, was at his attacking best as he continued his onslaught and pulled SRH skipper Markram for two consecutive fours in the seventh over and then struck Mayank Markande for two more boundaries.

At the end of the 10th over, GT were 103 for one.

It was mayhem thereafter with Gill and Sudharsan going hammer and tongs to maintain a healthy run rate of over 10 till 14 overs.

Sudharsan finally de-

parted in the 15th over, caught by T Natarajan at backward point off the bowling of Marco Jansen.

GT skipper Hardik Pandya didn’t last long, giving a straightforward catch to Rahul Tripathi at point, handing Bhuvneshwar his second scalp of the day.

David Miller perished in the next over while attempting a big hit. Rahul Tewatia was the next to depart as SRH picked up four wickets in four overs.

Gill, however, went about his business and brought up his century in 56 balls with a single to long-off in the 19th over. But soon after raising his ton, Gill perished in the opening ball of the final over, caught by Samad off Bhuvneshwar.

Rashid Khan got a thick edge in the next ball and Noor Ahmad also departed during an excellent final over by Bhuvneshwar.

Brief scores: Gujarat Titans: 188/9 in 20 overs (Shubman Gill 101, Sai Sudharsan 47; Bhuvneshwar Kumar 5/30). Sunrisers Hyderabad: 154/9 in 20 overs (Heinrich Klaasen 64; Mohammed Shami 4/21, Mohit Sharma 4/28).

Rivalries with Federer, Nadal and Murray made me stronger: Djokovic

ROME, MAY 15 (IANS):

After battling his way into the last 16 of the Italian Open, Novak Djokovic said that rivalries with Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Andy Murray have made him stronger in the face of difficult circumstances.

Djokovic, the top seed and defending champion, moved into the last 16 of the Italian Open but had to work hard, winning against Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov, 6-3, 4-6, 6-1 on Sunday.

“Luckily for me in my career, I managed to win more matches than those that I lost when I was facing difficult circumstances.

I also lost a lot of matches, particularly in the beginning of my career. For a few years, whenever I needed to make that final step or win a Slam, I ‘idn’t manage to do that, so I learned a lot,” Djokovic was quoted by Eurosport.

The quartet -- Djokovic, Nadal, Federer and Murray -- have been the dominant players for most of the last 20 years, winning combined 67 Grand

Slam titles.

They have engaged in numerous Grand Slam finals and high-profile matches, and they collectively dominated the world No. 1 ranking from 2004 all the way until 2022.

“I got stronger because of the rivalries, particularly with Federer, Nadal and Murray. Just staying the course, staying patient and believing in the process and the journey...understanding what works for you best, what’s your winning

formula, mentally and also physically and emotionally, and then sticking to it,” the 22-time Grand Slam champion added.

Bidding to reach the quarterfinals of the Italian Open for the 17th time from as many appearances, Djokovic will next face No. 13 seed Brit Cameron Norrie. The Serbian is the defending champion in Rome and is set to lose the world No. 1 to Carlos Alcaraz after the tournament.

Barca secure La Liga title, relegation fight stays close

MADRID, MAY 15

(IANS): FC Barcelona clinched the La Liga title with four games left this season, thanks to a 4-2 win away against local rivals Espanyol on Sunday night.

Robert Lewandowski opened the scoring after just 10 minutes, and Alejandro Balde doubled the lead with a far-post volley nine minutes later before Lewandowski’s second of the match made it 3-0 before halftime, reports Xinhua.

Jules Kounde headed home Barca’s fourth eight minutes into the second half, and although Javi Puado pulled a goal back for Espanyol in the 73rd minute and Joselu netted a second in injury time, it was too little too late for Espanyol, who remain second from bottom of the table.

The result leaves Xavi Hernandez’s side with 84 points from 34 matches: a 14-point lead over secondplace Real Madrid and 16 points more than Atletico Madrid in third.

Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti made seven changes ahead of next week’s Champions League semifinal return leg away

to Manchester City for Saturday’s 1-0 win at home against Getafe.

A far-from-vintage Madrid display was decided in their favor thanks to Marco Asensio’s 69th-minute goal, but Madrid lost Eduardo Camavinga to injury.

That win lifts Real Madrid back to second place in the table after Atletico Madrid slipped to a surprise 1-0 defeat away against alreadyrelegated Elche. Diego Simeone’s side produced an uncharacteristi-

cally lackluster performance and committed just three fouls in the entire 90 minutes, with Fidel netting the only goal of the game and Atletico failing to respond. Real Sociedad and Girona drew 2-2 in a result that suits both sides as Real Sociedad move closer to securing fourth place, while Girona maintain their hopes of playing in Europe next season after goals from Yan Couto and Cristhian Stuani saw them fight back after early goals from Mikel

Oyarzabal and David Silva had put ‘la Real’ 2-0 up early in the game. Villarreal also moved closer to securing a place in Europe with a 5-1 win at home against Athletic Bilbao. Alex Baena and Nicolas Jackson both scored twice, and Aitor Paredes netted an own goal as Villarreal found acres of space in attack. Osasuna returned to winning ways with an impressive 3-1 win over relegation-threatened Almeria, thanks to goals from

Ante Budimir, Ezza Abde, and Moi Gomez. Pablo Maffeo’s firsthalf header following a corner gave Mallorca a 1-0 win at home against Cadiz on Friday. That defeat leaves Cadiz deep in trouble after Valencia won 2-1 away against Celta Vigo on Sunday afternoon. The visitors opened the scoring thanks to fit-again Justin Kluivert in the eighth minute, and although Celta controlled the ball, their moves nearly always broke down with the final pass.

Haris Seferovic finally leveled on the hour, but Valencia youngster Alberto Mari scored a vital winning goal two minutes from time, although Valencia’s celebrations were cut short when Gabriel Paulista was sent off in injury time.

Valladolid also remain deep in trouble after a controversial 3-0 defeat at home against Sevilla.

The home side was furious that the referee disallowed what would have been an opening goal from Sergio Escudero, as he blew the whistle for halftime as the ball was flying towards the Sevilla goal.

Carlo Alcaraz

ROME, MAY 15

(AP):

Carlo Alcaraz’s 12-match winning streak came to an unexpected end when he was beaten by 135th-ranked Hungarian qualifier Fabian Marozsan 6-3, 7-6 (4) Monday in the third round of the Italian Open.

Alcaraz had won consecutive clay-court titles in Barcelona and Madrid and secured a return to the No. 1 ranking by winning the opening match of his Rome debut. But the 20-year-old Spaniard appeared surprised by how Marozsan dictated with spectacular play all over the court, including a series of drop shots that Alcaraz had no answer for.

The result means that Alcaraz will go into the French Open — which starts in less than two weeks and where he will be the top seed — coming off a dispiriting defeat.

It was only the second

Making matters even more surprising was that this is the first time Marozsan is playing in the main draw of an ATP tournament — and the match took place before a full stadium on Campo Centrale. Alcaraz established a 4-1 lead in the tiebreaker but then Marozsan won six straight points to close it out.

Late in the second set, Alcaraz started yelling “Vamos” every time he won a significant point. But Marozsan just kept coming, unleashing an 82 mph (132 kph) backhand winner up the line to conclude one point and winning several close exchanges at the net.

By the end, Marozan had compiled twice as many winners as Alcaraz, 24 to 12, and far fewer unforced errors, 13 to 24. Marozsan will next face Borna Coric, who continued his solid form on clay by beating Roberto Carballes Baena 7-6 (3), 6-1. At the Madrid Open last week, Coric reached the semifinals before losing to Alcaraz.
