Correspondent
KOHIMA, DEC 17 (NPN): Thousands of people took part in the mega ‘peoples’ rally’ organised by Naga Students’ Federation (NSF) here on Friday to demand repeal of the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act, 1958 (AFSPA) and justice for the innocent civilians killed by security forces in Mon on December 4 and 5. Participants mostly students were seen holding placards some of which read: “Nagas Lives matter too”, “India show your sincerity to peace”, “How many more years before you take us as people”, “Justice for Oting victims” etc. The participants walked from Old MLA Hostel junction to Raj Bhavan where the NSF president Kegwayhun Tep, peoples’ rally organising committee convener Vipopal Kintso, North East Students’ Organization (NESO) advisor Samujjal Bhattacharya and other leaders submitted a memorandum to Prime Minister of India through the gover-

nor’s office highlighting the incidents that took place in Nagaland under AFSPA. (Full text on p-6) The memorandum also raised three demands– i) immediate justice for the Oting victims and expedite delivery of justice in all cases related to excesses committed by the Indian armed forces upon Nagas, ii) immediate repeal of the draconian AFSPA and iii) expedite Naga political solution. Earlier, addressing the gathering before the rally, NESO adviser Dr Samujjal Bhattacharya expressed solidarity with the Nagas and also paid tributes to the Oting victims.
He said the attack on the innocent civilians was not just on the Nagas, but on all the indigenous people of the Northeast. Bhattacharya assured that NSF was not alone in its fight against the draconian Act and nor were the Nagas at this juncture as NESO and all indigenous people from the seven States of the region were with them. He observed that government of India behaved as if the country ended at Kolkata while neglecting the North-eastern region. He asserted that the people of the region would not accept mere statements or inquiry by the Centre in
the Oting incident unless the perpetrators were brought to justice and AFSPA repealed from the region. Bhattacharya also demanded that Union home minister Amit Shah must withdraw his statement given in parliament. He cautioned that government of India should not think the Nagas were alone or that the Northeast was divided because, even if the region was divided in to several States politically, the people were emotionally united. He said that the people would continue to fight until AFSPA was totally withdrawn from the region and disclosed that
NESO was starting a movement in the seven States. He asked government of India how many lives it needed before the Act was repealed and added that he was willing to be the next victim if it meant that the Act would be repealed. In his brief remark, Angami Public Organisation vice-president Neivor Rutsa said much Naga tears had been shed under AFSPA. He extended solidarity to NSF in its stand against the “black and savage law” in the guise of AFSPA, which he added was a blot on the largest democratic country in the world. He asked why the law was enforced in the State or why Nagaland was declared a Disturbed Area. He wondered who was disturbing whom. Rutsa made it clear to Delhi that if it did not consider Nagas as good citizens then it should leave them alone in their own land to live in peace and serenity. He called on everyone to come together to embark on a new journey together.

Wrong to generalise human rights are violated in NE due to AFSPA: NHRC
GUWAHATI, OCT 17 (PTI): Justice Arun Mishra, the chairperson of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), on Friday said it would be wrong to generalise that human rights get violated due to imposition of AFSPA in some of the North Eastern states. He also pointed out that the NHRC cannot examine or hold a debate on the legality or constitutionality of the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA). “It cannot be generalised that human rights are violated due to imposition of AFSPA. The government should be reviewing the need for application or withdrawal of the Act,” Justice Mishra told reporters, after the conclusion of a two-day camp in Guwahati. He, however, asserted that the commission views custodial deaths or extra-judicial killings “very seriously” and all cases must be reported or it may take suo-moto cognisance. The human rights body examines the merits (Cont’d on p-8) of the cases and announces

compensation for the family members of the victims, which is then complied with by the state governments, he said. Refer ring to the botched counter insurgency operation in Nagaland’s Oting village which claimed 14 lives of civilians, Justice Mishra said the NHRC had taken up the case suo-moto and issued notices to authorities concerned as the state does not have a unit of the statutory agency. “We have sought a report from the Union home ministry and the Special Investigation Team (SIT) that has been set up to probe the
incident. It will, however, not be proper to comment on the merit of the case at this stage,” he added. Asked about the series of police encounters that have taken place in Assam since May this year, the NHRC chairperson said that there is “no place for fake encounters in a civilised society. It is barbaric and cannot be allowed. The law must take its own course”. “At the same time, we cannot allege that all encounters are fake. Some may be fake, but we take up each complaint and examine the merit of each case...,” he said.
Cong offers support to NPP-led govt in Meghalaya 2-day bank strike ends; services hit across country Correspondent
SHILLONG, DEC 17: In a surprise development, the five-member opposition Congress in Meghalaya offered support to the Conrad Sangma-led government in an attempt to check-mate the Trinamool Congress. On Friday, the five Congress legislators led by their legislature party leader, Dr. Mazel Ampareen Lyngdoh met chief minister Conrad Sangma at the secretariat and made the surprising offer in “public interest.”. “We would now like to get into a different plane of
governance where we feel that supporting the government, partnering with the government on agendas that are going to be productive for the people in general is something which is going to be far more productive than always presenting a hostile disconnect with the government of the day,” Lyngdoh said. “This is not an outside support for the government. We remain an independent lobby within the opposition,” she added. The r uling Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) is comprised of NPP, BJP, UDP, NCP and
other regional political parties. The Congress as an opposition has been the National People’s Partyled MDA government’s staunchest critics and has raised several issues of public interest. There were other instances where issues were raked up just for the sake of opposing. “This constant political manoeuvring would be disadvantageous for the public. So, the CLP (Congress Legislature Party) has unanimously decided we should now rise above our own concerns politically and focus on what is in the
best interest for the public,” Lyngdoh said. “We will rise above that and we will take head on an opportunity to work and partner with the government on important agendas that we placed before the Chief Minister,” the senior Congress legislator said, adding that, “So by and large, we are telling the people of Meghalaya that the Congress today will not be a hostile Congress.” This sudden change in approach within the Congress, which has lost its opposition status, would certainly turn the political heat up.
NEW DELHI, DEC 17 (PTI): The two-day nationwide bank strike called by United Forum of Bank Union ended on Friday, impacting normal operations across the country. Lakhs of employees of public sector banks were on strike to protest against the proposed privatisation of banks by the government. Banks will work as usual on Saturday, as it is a working day. United Forum of Bank Union (UFBU) is an umbrella body of nine bank unions, including All India Bank Officers' Confedera-
tion (AIBOC), All India Bank Employees Association (AIBEA) and National Organisation of Bank Workers (NOBW). Services like deposits and withdrawal at branches, cheque clearance and loan approvals remained paralysed due to the two-day strike. ATMs at different parts of the country went dry on the second day. Government treasury operations, negotiating of import and export bills, grant of loans, cash transactions, etc. were not possible and clearing operations were affected. In the three clear-
ing centres of Mumbai, Delhi and Chennai, about 39 lacs cheque worth about Rs 37,000 crore could not be taken up for clearance, (AIBEA) general secretary C H Venkatachalam said. AIBOC General Secretary Soumya Dutta said that about 7 lakh bank employees across the country enthusiastically participated in the two-day strike. To facilitate privatisation, the government has listed the Banking Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2021, for introduction and passage during the current session of Parliament.
ED attaches assets of 3 NSCN(I-M) Armed miscreants open fire at Wapher village members in money-laundering case NEW DELHI, DEC 17 (PTI): The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has attached assets worth Rs 7.65 crore belonging to three members of Naga insurgent group NSCN (I-M) in connection with a money-laundering investigation against them linked to charges of alleged extortion. The attached properties belong to Alemla Jamir alias Mary Shimrang alias Atula Tongar, PH Shimrang alias James Jamir and Massasosang Ao and some other
members of the NSCN(IM), the probe agency said in a statement. Funds parked in 17 bank accounts, three fixed deposits and a residential property bought by Alemla Jamir in her name at Mohammadpur in RK Puram area of Delhi have been attached as part of a provisional order issued under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), the Enforcement Directorate (ED) said. Alemla Jamir is the wife of ex-army chief
of NSCN (I-M) Phunthing Shimrang. While she and her brother-in-law Massasosang Ao are currently lodged in Delhi's Tihar jail, P Shimrang is absconding, the ED said. It said Alemla Jamir, her husband, Massasosang and other NSCN (I-M) members had “created a network for terrorising businessmen and disrupting their operations with an intent to collect extortion/illegal tax money from them.” (Cont’d on p-8)
DIMAPUR, DEC 17 (NPN): Unidentified armed miscreants reportedly opened indiscriminate firing at Wapher village Shamator under Tuensang district on December 17, at around 5:30 a.m. damaging some residential buildings and huts. Vehemently condemning the firing incident, the Wapher Village Citizens’ Union (WVCU) said that the dastardly attack was carried out “with criminal intent to kill innocent villagers.” In a press release,
Empty cases and live rounds recovered by the villagers. (WVCU)
WVCU president Thomas Toreph and general secretary J Tochumong have, however, said that “fortunately, by God’s grace no one was injured or killed in the incident.”
The union said that a first information report (FIR) has also been lodged with Shamator police station in connection with the incident. WVCU has demand-
ed that the state government thoroughly investigate the matter and arrest those responsible for “this reprehensible incident”. Failure of the government to take action, the union cautioned that “the public of Wapher shall have the right to defend the respect and dignity of the village.” Meanwhile, Tikhir Students' Union (TSU), the apex student body of Tikhir tribe, also vehemently condemned the firing incident.

Centre warns against non-essential travel as Omicron spreads NTC memo to President demands India’s Omicron count now 111 after single day rise of 24 cases NEW DELHI/MUMBAI, DEC 17 (PTI): India’s Omicron COVID count crossed the 100 mark on Friday after recording the highest single day rise of 24 fresh cases of the new variant, even as the Centre advised people to avoid non-essential travel and mass gatherings and keep New Year celebrations at low intensity. As Omicron tally from 11 states and union territories stood at 111 exactly 15
days after the first case of the potentially more contagious COVID variant was detected in Karnataka, 20 new cases were reported from Maharashtra (8) and Delhi (12) to take their total to 40 and 22 respectively. Telangana and Kerala recorded two more cases each to take their tally to eight and seven respectively. Centre also warned it is likely that the spread of Omicron will outpace the Delta variant where there is community transmission. Addressing a joint news conference, joint secretary in health ministry, Lav Agarwal said though daily COVID-19 cases are
below 10,000 for the past 20 days, there is a need to stay vigilant in view of the new Omicron variant and rising cases in other countries. According to Central and state officials, Maharashtra has reported 40 cases, Delhi (22), Rajasthan (17), Karnataka (8), Telangana (8), Gujarat (5), Kerala (7), Andhra Pradesh (1), Chandigarh (1), Tamil Nadu (1) and West Bengal (1). “As Omicron variant is spreading very fast across Europe and most parts of the world so need to avoid nonessential travel, avoid mass gatherings and it is time to observe low intensity festivities and ushering in
new year celebrations has to be at low intensity,” said ICMR director general Dr Balram Bhargava. Citing the WHO, Agarwal said the Omicron variant is spreading faster than the Delta variant of the coronavirus in South Africa, where Delta circulation was low. It is likely that Omicron spread will outpace Delta variant where community transmission occurs, he said quoting the WHO. Agarwal said “Omicron is spreading at a rate we have not seen with any previous variant. We are concer ned that people are dismissing Omicron as mild.” In response to a
question on whether we are in community transmission of Omicron, Agarwal said, “We cannot at this point say that Omicron variant is widespread in India.”
Nagaland logs 1 fresh Covid case NPN: Nagaland on Friday recorded one fresh Covid-19 positive case while no deaths were reported during the day. The fresh case was reported in Dimapur, taking the total caseload to 32165. The death toll remained unchanged 701 (including 16 non-Covid deaths but with positivity).
withdrawal of AFSPA, DAA tag
DIMAPUR, DEC 17 (NPN): The clamour for withdrawal of Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) from the State is only getting louder. Nagaland Tribes Council (NTC), in a representation to President Ram Nath Kovind, copies of which were marked to governor Prof Jagdish Mukhi and chief minister Neiphiu Rio, demanded withdrawal of AFSPA and “Disturbed Area” tag from Nagaland. NTC president Toniho Yepthomi and general secretary Nribemo Ngullie in their representation stated categorically that if peace
was to be given a chance, then civilian killings and atrocities should be stopped. They said if government of India was honest and sincere at ceasefire and dialogue, then the Disturbed Area tag and AFSPA 1958 cannot be imposed on Nagaland. Alleging that the “double standard” policy of Centre proved that Nagaland was brought to the Union to be suppressed indefinitely, NTC urged President to take immediate steps and impress upon the Centre to revoke extension of “Disturb Areas” tag and AFSPA in Nagaland forthwith. DMC administrator Albert Ezung handing over certificates to the winner. (NP)
Staff Reporter DIMAPUR, DEC 17 (NPN): Zeliangrong and Lakeview Colonies were declared the cleanest colonies in Dimapur under big and small colony categories respectively. The “Cleanest Colony Competition 2021” award ceremony was organised by Dimapur Municipal Council (DMC) under “A Better Dimapur” initiative held here, on Friday. Delivering the welcome address, DMC administrator, Albert Ezung said that everyone loved to live a healthy, clean, hygienic and friendly environment however, people’s perception differed when it came to achieving this common goal.
Albert said some people might leave everything in the hands of the government departments and other agencies to clean yet he said many people believed it was a collective responsibility to achieve something good for society. He said that DMC despite their limitations were trying the best to give services to the people and in their endeavour to do something good, they were grateful for the support extended by various organisations especially colony authorities. The DMC administrator pointed out that constructive criticism was always welcomed and despite all negativity, it was heart-warming to have received support from people especially the youth.
Speaking on the occasion as special guest, SDO (C), Zubenthung Ngullie said that after the cleanest colonies competition initiative, Dimapur had been witnessing a positive change. Under the big colony category, Zeliangrong colony received a cash prize of Rs. 1 lakh while the second runner-up Sematilla colony was awarded Rs. 50,000 and runner-up UNBA-B colony received a cash prize of Rs. 20,000. Under the small colony category, Lakeview colony won the cleanest colony title and walked away with a cash prize of Rs. 1 lakh while the second cleanest colony was awarded to Riverbelt colony and the third prize to Island colony. Dr Zelhou Keyho said that churches in Nagaland particularly had been connected to Baptist International Ministries (BIM) known as American International Foreign Mission, from the beginning until now. He informed that the celebration of the history of Christianity 150 years would be celebrated next year, after which Nagaland Baptist Church would be celebrating its existence right after ABAM on the theme “history”. Speaking on the theme, Dr Zelhou clarified that the story of Christianity in Nagaland was not about Naga history but was about the history of Almighty God. Rejoicing the presence of reverend Rev. Imotemjen Aier who he said was dedicated, committed and worked selflessly as a missionary, the reverend said that Rev. Aier had become not only a leader in the state but also worked at the national- international level to be entrusted for greater ministry in the region. He pointed out that “sometimes we celebrate life after that death but for him it is more appropriate to celebrate life when we are active”. DIPHU (ASSAM), DEC 17 (PTI): Jackson Ronghang, the self-styled chairman of newly formed insurgent outfit Karbi Democratic Liberation Front (KDLF), which was allegedly involved in the recent abduction of three construction workers, was killed in an encounter with the police in Assam’s Karbi Anglong district on Friday, a senior officer said. Additional Superintendent of Police Prakash Sonowal said that one person, identified as Amarjyoti Terang, was recently arrested from Rongmonwey in connection with the kid-
napping of three workers from the construction site of a bridge in the village on December 10. Following his interrogation, three persons suspected to have been involved in the abduction were identified and one of the hostages was rescued, while the remaining two construction workers are yet to be traced, he said. Acting on a tip-off about the presence of Ronghang in jungles near the village, police launched a search operation in the area, Sonowal said. During the search op-

Rohingya case: Ghy HC grants Ghy HC restrains Assam govt from eviction time for getting govt instruction GUWAHATI, DEC 16 (PTI): The Gauhati High Court on Thursday granted time sought by the Assam government counsel to get the views of the administration about a petition in which 10 Rohingya community people, lodged in jail for seven years, prayed for refugee status by India or deportation to their country, Myanmar. These 10 people belonging to two related families were arrested in 2014 for entering the country without valid documents and have been lodged in Tezpur Central Jail. During a hearing earlier this month, a division bench comprising justices Justices Kotiswar Singh and Malasri Nandy said petitioners have admitted
that they are citizens of Myanmar who have been convicted for entering the country illegally. “The plea of the petitioners is that they be allowed to remain in India by granting them refugee status or be deported to their country of origin i.e Myanmar. The authorities, however, are not taking any decision in this regard and they are languishing in jail,” the bench had said. The special counsel of the Foreigners’ Tribunal had sought time from the court to take instructions from the government on the action to be taken in the case of the petitioners. Granting the counsel time, the bench on Thursday said the matter will be heard again on January 10 next year.
GUWAHATI, DEC 17 (IANS): The Gauhati High Court has restrained the Assam government from evicting the people of a village under Dhekiajuli police station in Sonitpur district, a court official said on Friday. Justice Manash Ranjan Pathak, after hearing the petitioners and the government officials, directed the representatives of the government not to take any coercive measures against the people served eviction notices until a representation of the petitioners to the revenue circle officer concerned is disposed of. The court fixed the next hearing of the case on February 2, 2022. According to the HC order, the circle officer of Dhekiajuli revenue circle under Sonitpur district had,
on November 15, issued eviction notices directing the villagers to vacate the government land they had encroached upon. After receiving the notices, the villagers on December 3 wrote to Revenue and Disaster Management Minister Jogen Mohan and the officials concerned, urging them not to evict them and demanded allotment of the land claiming that they had been living on these lands for decades. A total of 244 villagers approached the court. Senior advocate Santanu Barthakur, assisted by Jahir Abbas, argued the case for the villagers. The village is not far from Dhalpur in Darrang district, where two persons, including a 12-yearold boy, were killed and 20 other injured in police firing

GUWAHATI, DEC 17 (PTI): An elephant calf was killed after being hit by a train in Assam’s Jorhat district on Friday, an official statement said. The male calf, around six to seven months’ old, got hit by New Delhi-Dibrugarh Rajdhani Express at Bhelaguri around 3.30 am while apparently trying to cross the tracks, it said. It died on the spot, the statement further said. The accident occurred at a distance of around three km from Gibbon Wildlife Sanctuary, the statement said. Post-mortem and other formalities are being carried out, it added. At least three more elephants were killed in the state by speeding trains in the state in December so far, including two in a single incident.
and clashes during an eviction drive on September 23. Like Dhalpur, all the residents of Dhekiajuli are Muslims. The Assam government had earlier ordered a judicial inquiry into the September 23 incident. A state government official said that former Gauhati HC judge B.D. Agarwala would conduct the inquiry, which is to be completed within three months. The Assam government for the past few months undertaken eviction drives in different districts to vacate the government lands encroached by hundreds of people for years. Various opposition parties including Congress had criticised the BJP government for evicting the people without making alternate settlements.
NEW DELHI, DEC 17 (IANS): Contrary to the impression of pristine blue skies and clean air that people usually have about the country’s northeastern region, a new analysis by the Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) has shown that the problem of air pollution is growing steadily in the states of that region. “In winter, air quality of cities like Guwahati can be almost as bad as what we see in the National Capital Region (NCR) and cities of Uttar Pradesh. Pollution is also high in smaller cities like Agartala and Kohima,” said Avikal Somvanshi, programme manager, Urban Lab, CSE. This is based on an assessment of annual and seasonal trends in PM2.5 concentration for the period January 1, 2019 to December 7, 2021. This analysis is based on the real-time data available from currently functioning air quality monitoring stations in the northeast. A huge volume of data points have been cleaned and data gaps have been addressed based on the USEPA (United States Environmental Protection Agency) method, the CSE said in a statement. This analysis covers seven continuous ambient air quality monitoring stations (CAAQMS) spread across six cities in an equal number of states -- two stations in Guwahati (Assam) and one station each in Shillong (Meghalaya), Agartala (Tripura), Kohima (Nagaland), Aizwal

(Dr. ABEMO) Registrar dc-1355/21
(Mizoram) and Naharlagun (Arunachal Pradesh). There is no real-time monitoring in Manipur and Sikkim, which is why the analysis is unable to cover these states. “The current obsession with high pollution concentration in the Indo-Gangetic Plain and in overall northern India overshadows and sidelines the early signs of the crisis in our northeastern states in the national discourse on air pollution and public health. Weak and inadequate air quality monitoring and paucity of data do not allow proper assessment of the risk. But even the limited evidence shows several cities -- especially the state capitals -- are already vulnerable to poor air quality and winter smog,” said CSE’s executive director, research and advocacy, Anumita Roychowdhury. The CSE analysed the urban air quality status in Assam, Meghalaya, Tripura, Nagaland, Mizoram, and Arunachal Pradesh as part of the air quality tracker initiative of the Urban Data Analytics Lab of CSE. The objective of this new analysis is to understand the magnitude and trend in winter pollution in major cities of the region, which have recently started real-time air quality monitoring. Even from the states covered, the data is lim-
ited. Guwahati and Shillong have data available for over two years. Real-time monitors in Agartala, Kohima and Aizwal became operational only near the end of 2020, which limits the possibility of doing long-term trend analysis for these cities. Naharlagun got its real-time monitor in March 2021. Due to excessive amount of missing data from this station, any meaningful analysis is not possible. Guwahati has the most polluted air in northeastern India: Average PM2.5 levels in 2021 (up till November 30) has already surpassed the 2019 annual average in Guwahati. The city’s 2020 annual average was also higher than its 2019 average, which indicates continuous worsening of air in the city. Shillong is the only other city in the region that has a station generating data for over two years, but due to poor data availability its annual averages cannot be considered credible. Nevertheless, the city’s average is considerably below the annual standard. High pollution episodes are common during winters despite low annual levels: Except Guwahati, rest of the cities in the states in northeast have low annual PM2.5 levels; but during winters, episodes of high pollution are common, the CSE statement said.

RSS magazine says Mamata shares dream of Modi RSS magazine says Mamata also believes in Congress-Mukt Bharat KOLKATA, DEC 17 (PTI): An article in an RSS-linked Bengali magazine has stirred up a hornet’s nest by claiming that both BJP and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee share the dream of “Congress-mukt Bharat” (Congress-free India). While the BJP distanced itself from the article in ‘Swastika’ calling it “baseless” and far from the party’s official stand, the Trinamool Congress also rubbished allegations of “understanding with the saffron camp” but the Congress said that the “cat is now out of the bag”. The ar ticle titled ‘Keno itihas muchte chaichen Mamata? Shilpo agroho na Sonia khotom?’ (Why is Mamata keen on erasing history? Mamata Banerjee and published in the December 13 issue of the magazine. It speaks about the TMC chairperson’s recent meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi, and claimed that both share the dream of “Congress-free India”. “It is clear from her changing stance that this is not the same Mamata Banerjee. Narendra Modi’s dream is Congress-free India. I feel that Mamata now also believes in the same dream. That’s why she is trying to erase the history to sell this dream,” the author wrote. The writer also wondered what “political cal-
culation” Banerjee has in her mind that she is bringing her “enemies and known rivals” close to her. Repeated calls to Tilak Ranjan Bera, editor of the magazine, went unanswered. RSS state general secretary Jishnu Basu said that he is yet to go through the article. “I am yet to read the article, so I cannot comment on it. But I don’t know about any understanding as the truth is that 62 BJP workers have been killed in the post-poll violence in West Bengal,” Basu told PTI. RSS sources said that
the magazine is linked with the organisation as its editorial and managing committee has several people who have an RSS background. State BJP spokesperson Shamik Bhattacharya termed the article “baseless” and said it has nothing to do with the party’s policy or stand. “It has nothing to do with the BJP’s policy or stand. Swastika might be an RSS-linked magazine, but many articles in it come out which are not in tandem with our policies and principles,” he said. Senior TMC leader Kunal Ghosh dubbed the allegations of “understanding with the BJP” as baseless. “The allegations of understanding with the BJP are baseless. Mamata Banerjee is the strongest opposition face against the saffron camp,” the TMC’s state general secretary said. The opposition Congress, however, alleged that the “cat is out of the bag”. “The secret is now
out in the open. For a long time, we have been saying that BJP and the TMC have a covert understanding and have been working together to destroy Congress. But they won’t succeed,” Congress leader Pradip Bhattacharya said. The TMC, which is trying to make inroads in other states, has been up in the arms against the Congress over its alleged failure to counter the BJP. In an escalation in the war of words between the TMC and the Congress, Banerjee’s party had last week claimed that it is now the “real Congress”, given the fact that the “warweary” grand old party has failed to perform its role as the main opposition to the BJP. T i e s b e t we e n t h e Congress and the TMC got further strained after the ruling party in West Bengal, in an article in its mouthpiece ‘Jago Bangla’, asserted that Banerjee, and not Rahul Gandhi, has emerged as the face of the opposition against Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

In the notice, he raised questions on the autonomy of the poll panel, but the Lok Sabha was adjourned amid uproar over the Lakhimpur Kheri violence. France, more than any other country, understands the necessity of the Indian content. And we are fully committed to the ‘Make in India’ initiative, as well as to the further integration of Indian manufacturers into our global supply chains,” she said. Parly said ‘Make in India’ has been a reality for the French industry for several years, particularly for defence equipment such as submarines. decision to appoint a new CDS, they said. It is learned that there is a strong possibility of appointing Army Chief Gen MM Naravane to the top post considering his overall experience. The Army Chief is due to retire in April. Gen Naravane is the senior-most among the three service chiefs. IAF chief Air Chief Marshal VR Chaudhari and Navy Chief Admiral R Hari Kumar had taken over their respective positions on September 30 and November 30. If Gen Naravane is appointed as the CDS, then the government will also have to look for his replacement. Vice Chief of Army Lt Gen CP Mohanty and Northern Army Commander Lt Gen YK Joshi will be the front-runner for the Army Chief ’s post. E
mployees of public sector banks (PSBs) including the State Bank of India (SBI) under the aegis of United Forum of Bank Unions(UFBU) had called for the two-day strike from December 16 to 17, against the move to privatise public sector banks. This is the second time that the union held a nationwide strike. It may be recalled, that UFBU had called for a two-day strike on March 15 and 16 earlier this year to protest against the government’s plan to privatise public sector banks. UFBU is an umbrella organisation of nine bank unions, and having a membership of around nine lakh members. UFBU had called for the strike to register opposition against the Centre’s move to introduce the Banking Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2021 during the ongoing Winter Session of the Parliament. The bill aims to privatise public sector banks. The Bill aims to amend banking companies acquisition and transfer laws of 1970 and 1980 and the Banking Regulation Act, 1949 to achieve privatisation of two PSBs to meet disinvestment targets as stated by finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman in the Union Budget 2021-22. On the face of it, privatisation of PSUs would be welcomed on the basis of the performances between private banks and PSU banks. Performance of PSBs has deteriorated post 2011–12, on account of rising non-performing assets (NPAs). In March 2019, NPAs at PSBs were 12.6% of all advances, while the figure for private banks was 3.7%. Return on assets at PSBs was -0.9%, while that at private banks was 1.2%. These comparisons show PSUs in bad light and works in favour of privatisation. It is largely felt that privatisation of banks will make management more accountable and sensitive to the needs of the customers. Other factors weighing against PSUs is that they impose prohibitive fiscal costs on the government. Scarce government resources that could be used elsewhere are spent on keeping non-performing PSBs afloat. PSUs handle huge government funds and generally are not worried about getting government deposits unlike private banks. The other side of the story is that private sector banks concentrate on the more affluent sections of the population and the metropolitan/urban areas, leading to financial exclusion of weaker sections of the society, particularly in the rural areas. Economist Dr Prasenjit Bose said the public sector banks were taking banking to the rural areas and ensuring financial inclusion. He feared reversal of these gains may take place if PSBs are privatised. The unions strongly feel that privatisation will harm the country as private banks would never understand their social role. They also fear that privatisation will deprive farmers, poor people from getting loans for education and other needs as profit becomes the sole motive. However, deep within the minds of lakhs of union members and many beyond the bank circles is that apprehension that the entire privatisation effort tantamount to selling PSUs to private corporate houses, many of whom have defaulted on loans from the banks and the move would also ultimately reward some well known crony capitalists.
DailyDevotion Redemption— Creating the Need it Satisfies
The natural man does not receive the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him… —1 Corinthians 2:14
The gospel of God creates the sense of need for the gospel. Is the gospel hidden to those who are servants already? No, Paul said, “But even if our gospel is veiled, it is veiled to those who are perishing, whose minds the god of this age has blinded, who do not believe…” (2 Corinthians 4:3-4). The majority of people think of themselves as being completely moral, and have no sense of need for the gospel. It is God who creates this sense of need in a human being, but that person remains totally unaware of his need until God makes Himself evident. Jesus said, “Ask, and it will be given to you…” (Matthew 7:7). But God cannot give until a man asks. It is not that He wants to withhold something from us, but that is the plan He has established for the way of redemption. Through our asking, God puts His process in motion, creating something in us that was nonexistent until we asked. The inner reality of redemption is that it creates all the time. And as redemption creates the life of God in us, it also creates the things which belong to that life. The only thing that can possibly satisfy the need is what created the need. This is the meaning of redemption— it creates and it satisfies. Jesus said, “And I, if I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all peoples to Myself” (John 12:32). When we preach our own experiences, people may be interested, but it awakens no real sense of need. But once Jesus Christ is “lifted up,” the Spirit of God creates an awareness of the need for Him. The creative power of the redemption of God works in the souls of men only through the preaching of the gospel. It is never the sharing of personal experiences that saves people, but the truth of redemption. “The words that I speak to you are spirit, and they are life” (John 6:63).

NAGALAND POST, DIMAPUR SATURDAY, DECEMBER 18, 2021
Post-mortem
NSF memorandum to Prime Minister W
e bring war m greetings from the Office of the Naga Students Federation. The Grim Story of AFSPA in Naga Homeland The very India that prides itself to be the world’s largest democracy has adopted for itself the very repressive, oppressive and inhuman instrument to subjugate a people much against their will and aspiration. T h e A F S PA ( a s amended in 1972 and 1986) has empowered the Indian military and paramilitary war machines with unlimited powers to extend their evil claws and judicial impunity to arrest, torture, kill and to commit everything inhuman. For sixty years and more the Nagas have been suffering from the colonial mindset of the Indian Government and continues to suffer. We have seen almost all our villages and fields burnt down several times, our womenfolk and mothers disgraced, our menfolk arrested without warrant or jailed without trail, our histories re-written and our indigenous and cultural practices spat upon and degraded, by Indian armies. The simplicity of our life and the joys of our living have been terribly exposed to the frustration of colonialism, the sinews of three-four generations have been made to crawl under the shadows of death and psychological warfare. And yet, we have never failed ourselves thus far. Every time the dignity of livelihood, existence, freedom and happiness is trampled upon without any remorse by the Government of Indian agencies - these perpetrators receive medals, awards, and honour for every Naga the Indian Government war machines kill, arrest, rape, loot or torture and they continue to be free from any legal prosecution. The AFSPA 1958, which has been imposed upon our birth-rights ever since Indo-Naga conflict started, protects and defends the Indian military and intelligence personnel for violating human rights and security, in clear contravention of existing international standings on war ethics, human rights,
and entitlements, to which India is also a signatory. It no longer remains a myth that the AFSPA rears the devil in the Indian armed forces personnel whose acts of impunity continues unabated as the draconian Act continues to shield them from being held accountable for their nefarious actions. The federation would like to substantiate the sorry state of affairs of the Naga people under the AFSPA regime by chronologically citing some major atrocities perpetrated upon the Nagas by the ruthless Indian armed forces across the Naga homeland while being shielded by the repressive AFSPA. 1960: POCHURY B L A C K DAY: 1 9 6 0 (Phor village, Yisi village &Matikhrü village) On 1st September, 1960, 6 (six) Civilians from Phor village were tortured to death, and on September 3rd, 1960 another 3 (three) civilians from Yisi village were beaten to death. Whereas, another 9 innocent lives were taken by the 16th Punjab regiment and their death bodies were dumped inside the village chief ’s house and burned down along with other houses and granaries. Within a span of one week 18 innocent lives were lost. To this day 6th September is obser ved as “BLACK DAY” by the people of Pochury tribe. 9th December 1970: Cheswezy 18 girls and nine married women were mass raped by the Indian Troops and 53 women were molested. 11th July 1971: Yenkeli Armies sacrilegiously raped four teenage girls at the pulpit of a church, for the nagas the church is a sacred institution and such profanity is not tolerated. Till today, the church remains forlorn. In 1956, before AFSPA came into force, this village was burned down to ashes and the whole villagers were made to hide in the jungles till 1959. 8th January 1987: Sheanghah Mokok 1 3 c iv i l i a n s f r o m Sheanghah Mokok village were ambushed by the Indian armed force while returning from the field.
3 civilians were declared spot dead while 10 were gravely injured. Despite declaring themselves as civilians the Indian armed forces did not hesitate to shoot at them. 9th July 1987: Oinam OPERATION BLUEBIRD was launched by the 21 Assam Rifles on 9th July, 1987 which lasted till October 1987. 27 Persons were killed, Three women were raped and five women sexually molested. More than Three hundred (300) persons were tortured by the 21 Assam Rifles. 125 residential houses were burned, 112 houses were dismantled, 6 Schools and 10 Churches were dismantled. 27th December 1994: Mokokchung 7 civilians were gunned down, another 5 were burned alive including one infant, and more than a dozen individuals went missing. 89 shops, 48 houses, 17 vehicles and 7 two wheelers were razed to ashes, excluding those destroyed by gunfire and shelling. 26th January 1995; Akuluto A yo u n g m o t h e r, breast-feeding her 1 year old baby was shot dead while fracturing the arm of the baby. 5th MARCH 1995: Kohima Kohima Town was under siege for 2 hours by the 16th Rashtriya Rifles consequent of a tyre bursting from their own convoy. 7 persons including two minor girls of three and half years and 8 years old child were killed, 22 persons injured by shrapnels’ and bullets, 15 physically assaulted and 22 persons were arrested and tortured. Out of the total victims, 14 were women. 15th AUGUST 1996: Tseminyu The 17 Assam Rifles forcibly gathered the men folks from Tseminyu South village at RSA Ground and were brutally tortured at gun point. 1006 live ammunitions were reportedly fired and 3 hand grenades were hurled at the innocent civilians. Miraculously none of which exploded. Four innocent civilians were killed including a student. Over the years, those who survived the incident grad-
ually succumbed to their physical injuries. 16th July 2015: Wuzu Two minor students, Master Tuzali and Miss Aso were killed and one pregnant mother named Esther was injured to the indiscriminate firing of the 46th Assam Rifles C’Coy of Akhegwo post under the command of Major Surinder Singh. 4th December 2021: Oting While 8 innocent coal miners were returning home from a mining site, 6 civilians were brutally killed in cold blood in broad daylight while 2 were gravely injured by the 21 Para Forces of the Indian Army. Another 7 civilians who belonged to the search party were mercilessly killed on that fateful evening. On the following day, another civilian was killed while protesting against the atrocious act perpetrated by the Armed forces. The fact that the above mentioned dehumanizing and atrocious acts committed upon the Naga people by the Indian armed forces are the just tip of an iceberg with its base spread across the entire ocean floor. Given an opportunity, the federation is more than willing to present a detailed and comprehensive report to your kind self and your good office at any appointed time. Our Demands: Incidents of the Indian Armed forces subjugating the Naga people and even indiscriminately firing upon them is not unprecedented in our Naga Homeland as the GOI continues to suppress the legitimate peoples’ movement through military means even after having realized that the same will not reap in the desired dividends. It is at the least appalling to see those trained to protect the sovereignty and integrity of India indulging in target practices with the innocent Naga civilians instead of serving the very purpose for which they are trained for. More so, the audacity of some Indian leaders coming out publicly to defend the atrocious acts and thereby legitimizing the murders, tortures, rapes, molestations etc upon the innocent Naga
civilians and botched army operations has been deeply hurting the sentiments of the Naga people while also flaring up our emotions. This blatant attempt to finish the Naga race through an undeclared war cannot be accepted, come what may. It is in this light that the NSF representing the aspirations and the voices of the Naga younger generations, spread across four Indian states and two international countries, place this representation containing three core demands, seeking your prompt attention and intervention. 1) Immediate justice for the Oting victims and expedite judgements and delivery of justice to all pending cases related to excesses committed by the Indian Armed Forces upon Nagas: The Federation demands that the Government of India (GOI) sets up a court monitored committee to be headed by a retired Supreme Court/ High court judge in-order to ensure that the Oting incidents are probed in a fair and impartial manner. The Federation reiterate our stand that the Special Investigation Team (SIT) being set up by the government of Nagaland will not do justice to the wilful acts of the Indian Armed forces under the protection of the repressive AFSPA. More so, the GOI must admit to the utter failure of its intelligence agencies and publicly apologize to the Naga people for furthering their subjugation of the Nagas through its policy of militarisation. Justice should be delivered immediately to the victims of the gruesome Oting incidents and to all the pending cases related to the excesses committed by the Indian armed forces. 2) Immediate repeal of the draconian Armed forces (Special Powers) Act, 1958: The Federation sees no rationale as to why the entire Naga homeland within India is tagged as ‘disturbed areas’ and the repressive AFSPA is thrust upon its people when the Indo-Naga political dialogue’s been held at the Prime Minister’s level is at a very crucial stage. More so, the prevail-
ing law and order situation in the Naga inhabited areas does not merit the Act which has only been used as a tool for psychological warfare against the Naga people. It is only because of AFSPA that the Indian armed forces continue to operate with impunity while forgetting all values & virtues that inhibits a sober soul. It is, therefore, demanded of the GOI to immediately withdraw the atrocious AFSPA from our Naga homeland and also repeal the same without any excuses whatsoever. 3) Expedite Naga Political Solution: The Nagas in the course of standing for our unique history and pursuing our common goal have suffered enough. The sacrifices of many Nagas whether they are dead or alive, is not a struggle for Naga identity alone; It is also a struggle for self determination, a struggle against the imposition of alien culture and values upon us. It is in this background that NSF made its standpoint crystal clear that economic packages or monetary assistance cannot purchase the rights of the Naga people. The envisaged solution must be mutually agreed upon on the negotiating table and not an imposed one. Rather, the GOI should not hesitate from allowing the Naga people to retain their legitimate rights. Given the official recognition of the unique history of the Nagas by the GOI, The Naga people strongly urge your Hon’ble self to not compare or subject the Naga issue to any other political issues in the country and that the promise of a unique solution based on the unique history which is inclusive, honourable & acceptable is brought forth at the earliest. We appeal in the greater interest of the Nagas and other communities and the Indian Nation to impartially and honourably deliberate the issues emerging from the situation in order to usher in an era of PEACE through optimum utilisation of your political will. NTC representation to the President of India for revocation of AFSPA 1958 and Disturbed Area tag from Nagaland
T
he Nagaland Tribes Council (NTC) had earlier submitted representation to the Hon’ble Governor of Nagaland dated 14/6/2016, for revocation of the AFSPA together to do away with the “Power to declare areas to be disturbed areas”, and similar representation to the hon’ble Chief Minister of Nagaland along with other issues, dated 18th March 2017, and urges upon the highest authority of this great Democratic Country of the world to use your wisdom and revoke the aforementioned Act once and for all in order to restore confidence of the victimised people of Nagaland in particular and the Northeast in general, and the mainland India. That all the time without any proper ground reality assessment the GOI invokes the draconian Section of the Act declares the entire Nagaland to be disturbed areas then liberalises operation authorising Armed Forces to enforce AFSPA in their own willingness on the pretext of dealing with insurgency whereby the innocent civilian becomes the victim(s).
In fact the entire Nagaland is now peaceful area as all NPGs from Nagaland have Ceasefire with the GOI, and there is no reason why AFSPA 1958 with the section to declare areas as “disturbed areas” should remain in the state of Nagaland. The State is under the bond of peaceful ceasefire for the last twenty four years. There was even a big announcement made on the Naga Political issue and its solution by no less a person than the hon’ble Prime Minister of India during the inauguration of the Hornbill Festival at Kisama on 1st December 2015, as saying “Solution within 18 months…” Dialogue between GOI and NPGs have also been culminated on “31st October 2019” with agreed points for settlement, considering “all unresolved matters shall be pursued through democratic political process post-solution”. The Naga people are eagerly expecting Naga Political Solution before Christmas, as “Christmas gift” and as assured by both the GOI representatives for Naga peace talks and State Political
leaders. However, to the contrary Nagas have been presented with the ruthless massacred of our thirteen unarmed Konyak Naga innocent brothers in cold blood and several other civilians left injured with bullet wounds by the Indian Armed Forces at Oting village area in Mon district on 4th December 2021 whereby many have become orphaned and widows under the shadow of AFSPA. Terming the incident as unfortunate, mistaken identity or regret by any authority is unqualified but the armed security forces responsible for the criminal act committed to the innocent Oting Villagers must be brought to book in the interest of justice without delay. The charter of demands for the victimized people must also be fulfilled at the earliest. The same style of atrocities on innocent public had been committed even to the extent of defying the sanctity of worship places by the Indian Armed Forces in the State of Nagaland for over sixty years which should
not be allowed to happen again. These ghastly incidents have now gone The Nagaland Tribes Council (NTC) questions the wisdom of government of India as to how ceasefires entered into and political dialogue continued. However, without arriving at the assured Political solution with the agreed points that is honourable and acceptable but its legal weapons such as AFSPA and all anti-terror laws are forced on the people giving the armed forces special powers to search, raid and arrest without a warrant, causing untold hardship and putting law and order in peril as though it is a terrorist infested State. “In other words, Olive branches are offered to peace loving Naga people where its citizens are happy as peaceful atmosphere and tranquillity emerges in the land on one hand, whereas war has even been waged against the innocent civilians during ceasefire period of time as well on the other”. Peace and War are never of the same, and the two cannot go together. Unless AFSPA is
revoked the trigger happy armed forces are bound to abuse the provisions of the Act. Nagas are not wild animals or beast so that we are hunted down at the whims of the Indian armed forces. We are also a human like anyone else in the mainland. Therefore, if peace is to be given a place, civilian killing and atrocities has to pave the way. Similarly, if GOI is at all honest and sincere at ceasefire and dialogue, the Disturb Area Tag, and the AFSPA 1958 an action of suppression, cannot be imposed on Nagaland any longer. This double standard policy of GOI proves that Nagaland was brought to its Union to be suppressed indefinitely. The Nagaland Tribes Council (NTC), therefore, urges your honour to take immediate steps and impress upon the GOI to revoke extension of ‘terrorism tag’, disturb areas, and AFSPA 1958 in the entire state of Nagaland forthwith. Will not allow BJP govt to pass ‘Enjoy rape’ shocker; Cong MLA apologizes anti-conversion bill: Siddaramaiah
The blast took place at Gujarat Fluorochemicals Ltd at Ranjitnagar in Ghoghamba taluka of Panchmahal district.
AHMEDABAD, DEC 17 (PTI): With the recovery of one more body on Friday, the death toll in a deadly blast-and-fire incident at a chemical plant in Panchamahal district of Gujarat increased to six, a senior government official said. A team of the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) has been called in to clear the debris and search for another worker who was missing, said district collector Sujal Mayatra. Five workers were killed and 16 others injured in a huge explosion and subsequent fire at a plant of Gujarat Fluorochemicals Limited (GFL) situated near Ranjitnagar in Ghoghamba tehsil on Thursday morning.
Following a day-long search and rescue operation, fire services teams pulled out five bodies from the rubble. As local villagers said that some workers were still missing, an SDRF team was called in, said Mayatra. “The body of a sixth worker was found today. Since one more person is still missing as per villagers, the toll may rise. Search operation is on,” the collector said. Of 16 injured workers, 14 have received minor injuries while two suffered over 50 per cent burns, Mayatra said. Those who have suffered minor injuries will be given discharge by Saturday evening, he said.
I will not defend myself. I tender my sincere apology for my utterance during the proceedings of the House if it has hurt people from any part of the country,” he said. He also apologised to the Speaker for his statement, which made him laugh and thereby attracted him criticism. The Speaker accepted Kumar’s apology and appealed to the members, especially women MLAs, not to drag the matter further and make it (a) big (issue) and proceeded with the Question Hour though some women legislators

Priyanka condemns party MLA’s remarks
Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Friday ‘wholeheartedly condemned’ a party legislator’s crass remarks on rape, describing the comment as ‘indefensible, ’reports Hindustan Times. “I wholehear tedly condemn the statement made earlier today by Sri. K.R.Ramesh Kumar. It is inexplicable how anyone can ever utter such words, they are indefensible. Rape is a heinous crime. Full stop,” she tweeted. Ramesh Kumar, a former two-term speaker of the Karnataka legislative assembly made the remark on Thursday, during the ongoing winter session of the assembly. “There’s a saying that if rape is inevitable, then lie down and enjoy it. That’s exactly the situation which you are,” Ramesh said during a discussion on the floor of the house.
BELAGAVI (K’TAKA), DEC 10 (PTI): Senior Congress leader Siddaramaiah on Friday accused the ruling BJP in Karnataka of trying to divert the attention of the people from real issues by bringing in emotive ones like “Love Jihad, Anti Conversion” with an aim to implementing its “hidden agenda”. Expressing confidence about the Congress coming to power after the 2023 Assembly polls, the Leader of Opposition in the state assembly also said that his party will not allow the anticonversion bill, which the government is planning to introduce during the ongoing winter session of legislature, to be passed. “Hundred per cent we will come back (to power after 2023 assembly polls). Further alleging that to divert the attention of the people from real issues, the government was making attempts such as bringing in anti-conversion law, Siddaramaiah said, “is there a need for it? There is no need. If there is forced conversion, file a complaint against those involved and punish them. There is a law already.”
Pointing at Hosadurga BJP MLA Goolihatti Shekhar’s claim that religious conversions by force or through inducement have become rampant and that his own mother is a victim of such act, he asked, “did he or his mother file a complaint?” Accusing the BJP of trying to implement its “hidden agenda” by raising emotive issues like “Lovi Jihad, Anti Conversion”, Siddaramaiah in response to a question whether the Congress would scrap the law on coming to power, said, “we will first stop the law from being passed now....let’s see (what is to be done on coming to power if it is passed now).” The proposed anti-conversion bill that is also being opposed by Christian community leaders is expected to come before the Cabinet on Monday and once cleared there it is likely to be introduced in the legislative assembly and council.
PM suggests making list of cities ignoring cleanliness campaign VARANASI, DEC 17 (PTI): Prime Minister Narendra Modi Friday mooted the idea of publicising a list of cities where a blind eye has been turned to the cleanliness campaign so as to build public pressure on the authorities there to work. Inaugurating the All India Mayors’ Conference in Varanasi via video conferencing, he also suggested that cities with rivers celebrate “river festival” (Nadi Utsav) to spread the glory of rivers so that people take pride in them and keep them clean. The prime minister said in several cities, rivers get ruined in due course, “at times reduced just to a dirty drain or a rainy season river”. “We have to adopt a sensitive approach towards
rivers,” he told the conference on the theme of ‘New Urban India’. As many as 120 mayors from across the country are participating in the conference. The prime minister exhorted them to build their political career using the opportunity they have got the serve the people. Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel was the mayor of Ahmedabad city during the colonial era when it was a nagar palika, the PM told them. “Sardar sahab started his journey from there, and today, the nation remembers him.” Stressing on cleanliness, he asked Union Minister for Housing and Urban Affairs Hardeep Singh Puri to not only give awards to the city excelling in cleanliness but also

recognise those making earnest efforts towards cleanliness. “Also prepare a list of cities that have kept their eyes closed as if they have nothing to do. We should come out with a list, and
publicise them. After this, there will be so much pressure from the public that everybody will want to work,” he said. “A l l t h e m a y o r s should resolve that in the coming competition, their city does not lag behind.” The prime minister stressed the cleanness drive should not be a once-in-ayear affair and proposed hosting a monthly interward contest on beautification to nudge them to work continuously for cleanliness. “Like cleanliness, beautification is also important. Can we organise
a beautification contest so as to find the most beautiful ward. The parameters can be cleanliness, beautification initiatives, how the walls have been painted, boards of shops and the signboards,” Modi said. Referring to the ongoing Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav, Modi said rangoli contests related to freedom movement can be organised till January 26. He also asked the mayors to run programmes such as freedom struggle themed ‘rangoli’ competitions, songs competition on freedom struggle and lullaby (lori) competition.

wanted to raise the matter. Earlier, Kumar in a tweet said, “I would like to express my sincere apologies to everyone for the indifferent and negligent comment I made in today’s assembly about ‘Rape!’ My intention was not trivialise or make light of the heinous crime, but an off the cuff remark! I will choose my words carefully henceforth!” The former minister came under fire from various quarters including the MLAs from his own party for his statement. The Congress’ Khanapur MLA Anjali Nimbalkar took a strong view of it and tweeted saying “the House shall apologise to entire womanhood, every mother, sister & daughter of this nation for such an obnoxious & shameless behaviour.” Another Cong ress MLA Sowmya Reddy too denounced the statement in her tweet, saying “this is just NOT ok. There needs to be an apology.”

B E N G A L U RU / N E W DELHI, DEC 17 (PTI): Karnataka Congress MLA K R Ramesh Kumar’s “enjoy rape if it is inevitable” remarks caused a furore on Friday, with the BJP, the National Commission for Women (NCW) and some women Congress MLAs taking umbrage to the statement made on the floor of the Assembly, even as the former Speaker apologised for the comment. The BJP in New Delhi targeted top Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and his sister Priyanka Gandhi Vadra over their party colleague’s controversial remarks, questioning their silence on the matter. During an Assembly debate on floods and related damages in the Karnataka Assembly on Thursday,
many MLAs wanted to highlight the plight of people in their constituencies and Speaker Vishweshwar Hegde Kageri, laughing, had said he had to say “yes, yes” for everyone, give up controlling the situation and take the proceedings in a systematic manner and that he should tell everyone to continue their talk. He explained that his only grievance is that the business of the House was not happening. Kumar had then intervened and said, “see, there is a saying- when rape is inevitable, lie down and enjoy it. That’s exactly the position in which you are,” remarks that prompted widespread criticism against him. On Friday, Kumar told the House he made a statement on the floor of the Assembly on December 16, which people found outrageous. “However, my intention was never to demean the prestige of this House or behave in an inferior way.

GURUGRAM, DEC 17 (IANS): Despite Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar’s announcement that “offering namaz in public places cannot be tolerated”, it was again offered at six places under heavy police deployment in Gurugram on Friday. On December 10, during his visit to Gurugram, Khattar had asserted that offering namaz in the open “will not be tolerated” and an amicable solution to the matter would be found in a fresh approach. The Chief Minister had said that the government has withdrawn the permission given to offer Friday prayers at certain designated sites. Offering public prayers is leading to clashes
and that should not happen, he had said. Earlier, Hindu and Muslim organisations had agreed on 18 new sites for open Friday prayers, including 12 mosques, dargahs, Waqf board properties and six public areas. “As many as 1,500 to 2,000 people used to offer namaz at the Leisure Valley ground for a long time. This site is a designated site among the six which were approved by the Imam organisation and Sanyukt Hindu Sangharsh Samiti. However, if someone raises objections, we will find other solutions,” member of Gurugram Imam organsiation, Tohreeq Ahmed, told IANS. “We request
the Muslim community to leave the spot after offering namaz, park their vehicles near the site and not on the road,” he said. M e a n w h i l e, A m i t Arya, Haryana CM’s media advisor, told over phone that it is quite shocking that despite the Khattar’s announcement, namaz is being offered in the open. “If Friday namaz is offered in open anywhere in Gurugram, it is a violation of Haryana Chief Minister’s announcement. However, apart from 12 mosques, dargahs, Waqf board properties, six private locations were allocated for the Friday namaz but the same was withdrawn by the government,” said Rajeev Mittal.

Sharing a detailed account of Nagas under AFSPA, Naga People’s Movement for Human Rights (NPMHR) secretary general Neingolo Krome said incidents similar to Oting had taken place for many generations now. He alleged that AFSPA had come into force after Indian Prime Ministers like Jawaharlal Nehru and Morarji Desai had openly declared their intent to exterminate the Nagas. Citing examples of past incidents, including the public execution at Matikhru and mass rape at Yenkali in Wokha, Krome said people were tortured and killed like cattle. He said the list of
atrocities against the Nagas was too long and that the Oting incident had reopened the eyes of the people. Earlier, the programme was chaired by rally organising committee convenor Vipopal Kintso, while Kohima Baptist Pastors’ Fellowship president Dr Kevichalie Metha invoked God’s blessings. The Oting story was shared by Eastern Naga Students’ Federation (ENSF) leader Sepikiu J Sangtam. A solidarity message was shared by Global Naga Forum representative Chuba Ozukum, while Forum for Naga Reconciliation member Dr P Ngullie shared a people’s message.

Boris accepts responsibility for crushing byelection defeat
L O N D O N, D E C 1 7 (PTI): British Prime Minister Boris Johnson on Friday accepted “personal responsibility” for a crushing defeat of his Conservative Party in a byelection, being dubbed a referendum on his leadership at Downing Street. Liberal Democrat candidate Helen Morgan overturned a huge Tory party majority to win the Conservative stronghold seat of North Shropshire, sparked by the resignation of former member of Parliament Owen Paterson found to have broken ministerial lobbying rules. The result comes at the end of ongoing criticism over alleged lockdown-breaching government parties and a House of Commons rebellion by Boris Johnson’s parliamentarians over tougher COVID-19 measures. “I am responsible for everything the government does and of course I take personal responsibility,” Johnson told reporters when asked about the byelection defeat.

“Clearly the vote in North Shropshire is a very disappointing result and I totally understand people’s frustrations, I hear what the voters are saying in North Shropshire and in all humility I have got to accept that verdict,” he said. Conservative Party cochairman Oliver Dowden earlier admitted that his party had been given “a kicking” and delivered “a message” that the governing party had “heard that loud and clear”. It prompted Johnson’s critics within his own party to issue warnings that his leadership now hangs in the balance. “One more strike and he’s out,” Tory
Merkel’s party chooses conservative Merz as leader BERLIN, DEC 17 (AP): Members of Germany’s biggest opposition party, the center-right Christian Democratic Union of former Chancellor Angela Merkel, chose prominent conser vative Friedrich Merz as its new leader, the party said Friday. Merz, making his third run for the CDU’s top post, won 62.1% support in a ballot of the party’s membership, beating two centrist contenders. His share of the vote was easily enough to avoid a runoff ballot. Armin Laschet, the CDU’s leader since January, is stepping down after leading the two-party Union bloc to its worstever election result in September. The bloc, which the CDU dominates, was
narrowly beaten by the centre-left Social Democrats of new Chancellor Olaf Scholz. Merz, 66, has experience of being an opposition leader. He led the centreright group in parliament from 2000 to 2002, when Merkel pushed him out of that job. He left parliament in 2009 and later practised as a lawyer and headed the supervisory board of investment manager BlackRock’s German branch. Merz returned to parliament in the September election. The online and postal ballot of the CDU’s roughly 400,000-strong membership was a first for the party. It said that nearly two-thirds of members took part.
Member of Parliament Sir Roger Gale told the BBC, adding that the byelection “has to be seen as a referendum on the Prime Minister’s performance”. The byelection followed the resignation of Owen Paterson, the parliamentarian for North Shropshire since 1997, who was found to have breached parliamentary rules on lobbying. In her victory speech, Morgan, who won by 5,925 votes, said: “The people of North Shropshire have spoken on behalf of the British people. They have said loudly and clearly, ‘Boris Johnson, the party is over’. “Your government, run on lies and bluster, will be held accountable. It will be scrutinised, it will be challenged and it can and will be defeated.” Her victory takes the number of Lib Dem members of Parliament up to 13. The party had lost dozens of its seats at the 2015 General Election following its coalition government with the David Cameronled Conservatives.
INTERNATIONAL 9 Lassa fever kills 80 J&K, Northeast and Maoist-hit regions in central in Nigeria: official ABUJA, DEC 17 (IANS): A total of 80 deaths have been reported across Nigeria following the spread of Lassa fever in the most populous African country so far this year, the Nigeria Center for Disease Control (NCDC) has said. A total of 434 confirmed cases of Lassa fever have been reported from 17 states and and the federal capital territory in the country between January and December 8, of which 80 deaths were recorded, said a NCDC statement told Xinhua on Thursday. Lassa fever is reportedly transmitted when the saliva, urine and excreta of rats come into contact with humans. In some cases, Lassa fever has similar symptoms as malaria.
India hit by terror activities in 2020: US report
WASHINGTON, DEC 17 (PTI): Terror outfits such as the Lashkar-e-Taiba, Jaish-e-Mohammed, Hizbul Mujahideen, ISIS and AlQaeeda continue to be active in the Indian subcontinent, with Jammu and Kashmir, Northeast India and Maoisthit regions in central India being hit by terror activities, according to the latest report on terrorism released by the US State Department. The Indian government had made significant efforts to detect and disrupt operations of major terrorist organisations within its borders, but threats persist, the report titled ‘2020 Country Reports on Terrorism’ said. “In 2020, terrorism affected the Indian Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir (J&K), Northeast India and Maoist-affected regions in central India. Major terrorist groups have been active in India, including the Lashkar-e-Taiba, Jaish-e-Mohammed, Hizbul Mujahideen, ISIS and Al-Qaeeda in the Indian subcontinent,” the report, which is published annually, said on Thursday. The report cites the
example of crackdown by the Indian security agencies on several key members of Al-Qaeeda-affiliated outfit Ansar Ghazwat-ul-Hind in Jammu & Kashmir. In September 2020, the United States and India held the 17th meeting of the Counterterrorism Joint Working Group and Third US-India Designations Dialogue. In December, India had proposed holding another Quad counterterrorism tabletop exercise along with the United States, Australia, and Japan, the report said. Although insurgent groups continue to operate in the Northeast, levels of
terrorist violence have decreased. The report also examined the decreasing presence of Khalistan groups in the country. “The many organisations involved in the Sikh separatist (Khalistan) movement have not engaged in significant recent activities within India’s borders,” it said. Observing that the National Security Guard has improved its response time and reduced past dependence on other agencies for logistics, the US State Department report insisted that challenges including budget constraints and dependence on temporary details and
Suspected arson in downtown Osaka building leaves 24 dead OSAKA, DEC 17 (AP): A fire that spread from a fourth-floor mental clinic in an eight-story building in downtown Osaka in western Japan on Friday left 24 dead in what police were investigating as a possible case of arson and murder. Police were searching for a man in his 50s to 60s who witnesses saw carrying a paper bag from which an unidentified liquid was dripping. He may have been among the 24 dead, or is one of the three people who were resuscitated and remain in serious conditions, or may have fled, a police investigator said on condition of anonymity because he wasn’t authorized to speak to the media. 27 people in a state of cardiac arrest, said Osaka fire department official Akira Kishimoto. One woman was conscious and brought down by an aerial ladder from a window on the sixth floor and was being treated in a hospital, he said. Later Friday,
24 people were pronounced dead, the fire department said. In Japan, the authorities customarily describe those without vital signs as being in “shinpai teishi,” or a state of cardiac and pulmonary arrest, and do not confirm deaths until they are pronounced at hospitals and
other necessary procedures are done. A doctor at one of the hospitals treating the victims said he believed many of them died after inhaling carbon monoxide as they had limited external injuries. Police said the cause of deaths could not be determined until the bodies were autopsied. One of clients said the clinic was popular and was always crowded with 15-20 people waiting, especially on Fridays when special counselling and programs were available for those preparing to return to work after taking a sick leave, NHK said. Authorities are investigating a possibility that the smoke filled the floor so quickly that the victims had no time to escape, Nippon Television said. Hours later Friday night, crowds were still gath-
ering outside of the building to take a glimpse of the scene where firefighters and police officers were investigating. “I haven’t heard of the cause but I’m shocked and wondering why someone would do this,” said Yuji Uehara, who works for a finance company. “I also offer my condolences to those who died.” The building houses the mental and internal medicine clinic, an English language school and other businesses. Most of the victims are believed to be visitors at the clinic on the fourth floor, fire officials said. Osaka police earlier said they were working to determine whether the fire was caused by arson. They later set up a team at the prefectural police headquarters, a sign they strongly suspect arson and murder.
volunteers from the armed forces remained. Noting that Indian security agencies were effective in disrupting terror threats, gaps remained in inter-agency intelligence and information sharing, the report said. In the absence of a National Counter Terrorism Centre, the Indian MultiAgency Centre (MAC) collaborates with the United States on exchanging terrorist screening information and conducting real-time collation and sharing of intelligence among federal and state security agencies. Several Indian states have established state-level MACs to disseminate terrorism information to law enforcement, it said. “Indian security forces demonstrate limited capacity to patrol and secure extensive maritime and land borders. India is implementing UNSCR 2396 to improve detection and deterrence of terrorist travel by using watchlists, implementing biographic and biometric screening at ports of entry, and expanding information sharing,” the report added.

Two killed, 20 rescued from flooded mine in China
BEIJING, DEC 17 (PTI): Two workers were found dead and 20 others were rescued from a flooded coal mine in China’s Shanxi Province on Friday. The workers were trapped underground for more than 30 hours. The accident took place on Wednesday at the quarry in Duxigou Village, Xiaoyi City. Illegal mining was blamed for the accident, according to a preliminary investigation, state-run Xinhua News Agency reported. However, confusion prevailed over the number of workers rescued. Xinhua initially said all 20 miners were saved. The state-run CGTN-TV, however, reported two miners were dead and 20 others rescued.
Rescue workers pulling out bodies from the flooded coal mine.
There were no immediate details about the two deaths, the TV report said. On Friday, Xiaoyi’s Municipal Party Secretary and Mayor were sacked over the accident, it said. Rescuers on Friday morn-
ing established contact with the miners. The first trapped miner was lifted out of the shaft early Friday. More than 400 rescuers had been racing against time to reach the trapped men. Several pumps were
installed and the water level in the pit dropped by 2.1 metres, rescuers said. Low temperatures and strong winds made search and rescue operations difficult. The local public security department has detained seven suspects involved and is searching for others who fled after the mine accident. China launched a nationwide campaign to crackdown on illegal mining, Xinhua reported late on Thursday. The high demand for coal has shored up prices, prompting the resurgence of illegal coal mining, according to the Office of the Work Safety Committee of the State Council and the Ministry of Emergency Management.

Miss World 2021 postponed Manasi Varanasi and others test positive for COVID-19
T
he Miss World 2021 pageant finale has been “temporarily postponed” after several contestants, including India’s Manasa Varanasi, tested positive for coronavirus, according to organisers. The organisers posted a statement on the official social media pages of Miss World and said the finale, which was scheduled to be at Coliseum Jose Miguel Agrelot in San Juan, Puerto Rico, on Thursday (December 16), will now take place after 90 days. “After meeting with the virologists and medical experts hired to oversee the Miss World 2021 event and discussing with the Puerto Rico Health Department, the decision has been made by the organizers of the event to postpone the glob-
ally broadcast finale at the Puerto Rico Coliseum Jose Miguel Agrelot to be held within the next 90 days. “As of yesterday, additional safety measures were implemented in the best interest of the contestants, production team and spectators, understanding the event increased risks on the stage and in the dressing room,” the statement read. The organisers said after additional positive cases were confirmed, they took the decision to postpone the event in consultations with health officials and experts. “The next step according to the medical experts is immediate quarantine, pending observation and further testing according to best practices in situations like this. “Once and only when
contestants and staff are cleared by health officials and advisors, will contestants and related staff return to their home countries,” it added. In a separate post on Instagram, Femina Miss India said Varanasi is among the contestants who have tested positive for coronavirus in Puerto Rico. “We were in great disbelief that she (Manasa Varanasi) might not be able to grace the world stage inspite of her immense hard work and dedication, however her safety is of utmost importance to us,” Miss India Organisation said on their official Instagram page. “We can’t wait to welcome Manasa back home, nurture her back to health and send her back stronger, healthier and happier,” it added. Julia Morley, CEO of Miss World Ltd, said, “We are very much looking forward to the return of our contestants, (who we have grown to know and love), to compete for the Miss World crown.” “Puerto Rico offers a safe environment and a spectacular backdrop for filming the Miss World Festival!” she added. Rohit gives pep talk to U-19 squad Aussies tighten grip on 2nd Test against Eng as he undergoes rehab with Jadeja
ADELAIDE, DEC 17 (IANS): Australia removed England openers Ror y Burns and Haseeb Hameed to leave the tourists at 17/2 in 8.4 overs, trailing by 456 runs at stumps on day two of the second Ashes Test at the Adelaide Oval. After Australia, on the back of counter-attack from the lower-order, declared at 473/9 in the first innings, Mitchell Starc and Michael Neser took out Burns and Hameed before a large lightning strike outside the venue forced early stumps to be called on a day thoroughly dominated by Australia. In the final session, debutant Neser and Starc inflicted more misery on England with stunning late cameos. Neser and Starc shared a rollicking 58-run stand off just 51 balls as the hosts’ lower-order, along with Jhye Richardson, added 89 runs in only 10 overs before captain Steve Smith declared the innings. With the ball, Starc struck on the first ball of his second over as Burns edged a nipping away delivery straight to Steve Smith at second slip. Neser got his first Test wicket on just his second ball as Haseeb

Hammed chipped to midon. Earlier, Marnus Labuschagne competed his sixth Test century while Steve Smith fell short of his and Carey chipped in with a half-century as Australia piled on the runs on an improved yet hapless England bowling attack. Resuming from 221/2, Smith got the first boundary with a fierce cut through point off James Anderson. Labuschagne, who ended day one unbeaten
on 95, reached his maiden century in the Ashes with a streaky edge past the slip cordon off Anderson for his eighth boundary in a gritty knock. Labuschagne reached the three-figure mark in 287 balls, making this his slowest century in Test cricket. The right-handed batter, who earned two reprieves on 21 and 95, was caught behind by keeper Jos Buttler on 102 off Ollie Robinson’s first delivery of the day. But replays showed

B E N G A L U RU, D E C 17 (PTI): The India U-19 squad on Friday got some “priceless lessons” from Rohit Sharma at the National Cricket Academy where the senior team’s white-ball skipper is undergoing injury rehabilitation alongside teammate Ravindra Jadeja. Rohit, who has been ruled out of the upcoming Test series in South Africa due to a hamstring injury, gave a pep talk to the U-19 boys ahead of the Asian Cup beginning December 23 in the UAE. Rohit and Jadeja were seen at the NCA with India U-19 captain Yash Dhull in his social media posts. The
BCCI also tweeted pictures of Rohit’s session with the squad. Rohit himself played at U-19 level back in 2006. “TeamIndia white-ball captain @ImRo45 made most of his rehab time as he addressed India’s U19 team during their preparatory camp at the NCA in Bengaluru,” wrote BCCI. Rohit, who was named ODI captain last week replacing Virat Kohli, was to travel to South Africa as vice-captain of the Test team for the series starting on December 26 before the injury ruled him out of the red ball leg of the tour. His expected recovery time is between three to
four weeks. India ‘A’ captain Priyank Panchal was named in place of Rohit in the Test squad, which reached South Africa on Thursday for the series. The senior opener, who took charge as T20I captain against New Zealand last month, is expected to be available to lead the team for the ODI leg of the South Africa tour, which is to take place in January. Jadeja has been ruled out of the South Africa tour due to a knee injury which he sustained during the home New Zealand Test series last month. He may take a longer time to recover from his injury.

that Robinson’s foot was on the line with nothing behind, giving Labuschagne another life. Eventually, Robinson had the last laugh in his next over, with a nip-backer that Labuschagne shouldered arms to and hitting him on the knee roll of back pad. The 27-year-old reviewed but couldn’t change the decision. Smith, in company of Travis Head, continued to move forward to reach his 32nd half-century, with a top-edge flying past But-
tler while pulling a short ball from Ben Stokes. Head lofted over Joe Root’s head but the England captain got his wicket on the next ball, foxing the left-hander into yorking himself. Cameron Green didn’t last long as Stokes got one to move past the outer edge and hit the top of off-stump. Smith and Carey ensured that Australia didn’t lose another wicket till dinner break arrived. After the break, Carey, the hometown boy, was watchful at start but looked for scoring opportunities whenever it came while Smith was on cruise mode. The 91-run stand between Smith and Carey was broken by James Anderson, whose low nip-backer rapped Smith plumb in front of the pads. Smith’s dismissal on 93 meant that he missed out on his 28th Test century,16th as skipper and 12th in the Ashes. Brief Scores: Australia 473 for 9 decl in 150.4 overs (Marnus Labuschagne 103, David Warner 95, Steve Smith 93; James Anderson 2/58) lead England 17/2 in 8.4 overs (Michael Neser 1/4, Mitchell Starc 1/11) by 456 runs.

The ticket sold for a final bid of $220,000, with a 20% buyer’s premium added to the price. The auction was conducted by Huggins & Scott Auctions. Jordan made his NBA debut on Oct. 26, 1984, at the Chicago Stadium, in front of more than 13,000 people, as
the Bulls recorded a 109-93 win over the Washington Bullets. Jordan played 40 minutes and scored 16 points in the game, as well as recording 6 rebounds and 7 assists. The stub is the latest piece of Jordan memorabilia to sell for an eye-watering price, with a game-worn jersey belonging to the 58-year-old from his sophomore season at the University of North Carolina selling for a record $1.38 million in May.
LONDON, DEC 17 (AGENCIES): Hong Kong swimmer Siobhan Haughey set the women’s 200 metres freestyle short course world record in Abu Dhabi on Thursday. Two-times Olympic medallist Haughey shaved 0.12 seconds off Sarah Sjostrom’s mark to win gold in 1:50.31 at the short course world championships. “I knew I was close to the world record, I got close recently a few times and everyone around me kept telling me I could do it,”
Haughey said. “I just tried not to think about that as all I wanted to do is really focus on my race plan. “I’d say that it was close to (perfect). The whole race happened pretty quickly. Honestly, I don’t really remember too much about it, but I’m sure there are things I have to work on, things I can slightly improve.” Haughey became the first swimmer from Hong Kong to win an Olympic medal when she took silver in the 200m freestyle in Tokyo before adding another in the 100m.

Covid-hit Liverpool bounce back to beat Newcastle 3-1 45th Ever Green Club Intra Village Volleyball tourney begins in Mkg
LIVERPOOL, DEC 17 (AGENCIES): Liverpool’s Trent Alexander-Arnold scored with a spectacular strike as they overcame the loss of three players to suspected positive COVID-19 tests and conceding an early goal to beat Newcastle United 3-1 in the Premier League on Thursday. Liver pool move onto 40 points from 17 games, one behind leaders Manchester City who beat Leeds United 7-0 on Tuesday. With Virgil Van Dijk, Fabinho and Curtis Jones ruled out for the hosts, Jonjo Shelvey struck the opener for Newcastle against the run of play in the seventh minute, with a swerving, dipping drive past unsighted keeper Allison Becker at Anfield. own box. Mohamed Salah put Liverpool ahead four minutes later, equalling Leicester City striker Jamie Vardy’s record of 15 consecutive Premier League games with a goal or assist by blasting home the rebound form a Sadio Mane shot. Newcastle improved dramatically in the second half, showing a defensive resolve that has been absent for much of the season, but in the last 10 minutes Liverpool started to turn the screw. Dubravka had to get down smartly to save from Mane in the 81st minute and Jota had a close-range shot blocked before the Newcastle keeper pulled off another super stop from Naby Keita. There was nothing he could do three minutes from the end of normal time though as AlexanderArnold took a touch on
the edge of the box before firing a rocket into the top corner. “I’ve been waiting for that for five years, waiting to hit it clean like that,” Alexander-Arnold told BT Sport. “I’ve had a few from the edge of the box ... I’ve caught that one sweet and it’s just nestled in the top corner.” The England fullback said he and his teammates had done their best to ignore the possible positive COVID tests at the club as the games come thick and fast over Christmas. “We’re focused on our football until we’re told otherwise. We’ll be in there every day, recovery again tomorrow and make sure we’re fit for Sunday,” he said. “ We ’ve g o t a b i g game, going down to Tottenham - it’ll be an interesting one but all we can do is focus on that and prepare for the game.”

SATURDAY’S MATCHES
HUELVA (SPAIN), DEC 17 (IANS): On a historic day for country’s badminton, India were assured of at least two medals at the 2021 BWF World Badminton Championships after former world No 1 Kidambi Srikanth and young Lakshya Sen entered the men’s singles semi-finals of the event, here on Friday. However, it wasn’t a good day for defending women’s champion PV Sindhu, who lost to familiar foe Tai Tzu Ying in the women’s singles quarterfinals and was knocked out of the tournament. The top-seeded Tai Tzu beat Sindhu 21-17, 21-13 in the women’s singles quarterfinals, which lasted 42 minutes, to end the Indian badminton ace’s title defence. Reigning world champion Sindhu had a nervous start with Tai Tzu rushing to the 9-3 lead in the first game. She amped her pace with aggressive cross-court shots but the Chinese Taipei shuttler was clever with her deceptions and managed to win the opening game. In the second game,
Lakshya Sen
Sindhu gave better competition to her opponent but could not quite take a sizable lead at any point. Tai Tzu frequently employed her drop shots to catch the Indian out and after being tied 12-12 in the second game, the Chinese Taipei shuttler surged ahead to wrap up the match. This is the first time that world No. 1 Tai Tzu has progressed past the quarters at the badminton world championships. She had defeated Sindhu in the semifinals of the Tokyo Olympics earlier this year. Meanwhile, ace Indian shuttler Srikanth beat Dutch badminton player Mark Caljouw 21-8, 21-7 to advance
Kidambi Srikanth
to the semi-finals in men’s singles. The 12th seeded Indian used his cross-court smashes to perfection and gave Caljouw no chance, winning the quarter-finals quite comfortably in just 26 minutes. This is Srikanth’s first semi-final appearance at the world championships. With this, he has now ensured his first and India’s 11th medal at the World Championships. Youngster Lakshya Sen also made his way into the semis after a hard-fought 21-15, 15-21, 22-20 win over China’s Zhao Jun Peng. Lakshya saved a match point at 19-21 and won two more points to assure a bronze medal.

DHAKA, DEC 17 (IANS): Indian Men’s Hockey Team registered a thrilling 3-1 victory against nemesis Pakistan in the much-awaited encounter in the Hero Men’s Asian Champions Trophy, here on Friday. It was goals by Harmanpreet Singh (9’, 53’) and the experienced striker Akashdeep Singh (42’) that ensured India remain in contention for their third consecutive title in the Asian Champions Trophy, having won the prestigious tournament in 2016 and joint winners in 2018. For Pakistan, Junaid Manzoor scored the lone goal in 45th minute. Earlier in the match, both teams lived up to the billing as they kept up the tempo from hooter to hooter. While it was India who drew the first blood through a penalty corner perfectly converted by Vice Captain Harmanpreet Singh to gain 1-0 lead in the 9th minute of the match, Pakistan denied
any big opportunity for India in the following minutes to keep the scoreline in check. After a goalless second quarter, the match took a thrilling turn in the third and fourth quarter respectively with both teams upping the ante. Though India made some potential circle entries, they could not finish the task by converting the opportunities. However, young Shilanand Lakra broke the gridlock in the 42nd minute when he made a fine tackle to enter the attacking circle from the left flank. He teamed up with Sumit to assist Akashdeep Singh who was poised in front of the goal-mouth to deflect the ball into the post, thus fetching India’s second goal of the match. Soon after, Pakistan scored in the 45th minute when they beat India’s defence which had done well so far to restrict them to just three shots on goal.
