There has been an 8.31 per cent increase in Omicron cases since Monday, the ministry said. The active cases comprise 4.62 per cent of the total infections, while the national COVID-19 recovery rate has decreased to 94.09 per cent, the ministry said. An increase of 80,287 cases has been recorded in the active COVID-19 caseload in a span of 24 hours. Centre directs states to ramp up Covid testing

NEW DELHI, JAN 18 (PTI): Flagging a decline in the number of COVID-19 tests in many states and union territories, the Centre has asked them to enhance testing so that an effective track of the spread of the pandemic can be kept and immediate citizen-centric action can be initiated. In a letter to states and UTs on Monday, Additional Secretary in the Union Health Ministry Arti Ahuja advised them to pay attention to this aspect immediately and increase the testing in a strategic manner keeping in view the trend of case positivity in specific areas. She highlighted that Omicron, which has been designated by the World Health Organization (WHO) as a variant of concern, is currently spreading across the country. Referring to the ministry's earlier letters and the Home Ministry advisory of
December 27 last year laying out the broad framework of pandemic management in the context of Omicron, Ahuja said testing remains a key and crucial component. “However, it is seen from the data available on the ICMR portal that testing has declined in many states and union territories,” she wrote. She said in all advisories on testing issued by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), including the latest on January 10, the basic objective remains early detection of cases for quick isolation and care. In addition, testing remains a key strategy for pandemic management as it helps in identification of new clusters and new hotspots of infection which can in turn facilitate immediate action for containment such as setting up of containment zones, contact tracing, quarantining, isolation and follow-up.
This can enable the state and district administrations to curb the spread of infection. Also this will ensure reduction in mortality and morbidity. “Progression of disease to a severe category can be averted by strategic testing of those who are at high risk and more vulnerable, as well as in areas where the spread is likely to be higher,” Ahuja said. Reiterating the advisory on purposive testing strategy issued by the ICMR on January 10, she said in community settings all those who are symptomatic must be tested and all atrisk contacts of laboratory confirmed cases must also be tested. This advisory needs to be read in conjunction with the earlier guidelines and advisories of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, wherein it has been recommended that strategic and focused testing should be done of people who are vulnerable, living in closed surroundings, in densely populated areas in emerging new clusters and new hotspots of positive cases, etc., Ahuja said. “In order to ensure that an effective track of the spread of the pandemic is kept and also immediate citizen-centric action is initiated, it is incumbent upon all states/UTs to enhance testing,” she said.

NEW DELHI, JAN 18 (PTI): The Personnel Ministry has decided to amend existing service rules to ensure the availability of a sufficient number of IAS officers for central deputation, officials said on Tuesday. The proposal which will give greater say to the Centre came as various state/joint cadres were found to be not sponsoring an adequate number of Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officers as part of the central deputation reserve even though the ministry had flagged the issue several times. “As a result of this, the number of officers available for central deputation is not sufficient to meet the requirement at Centre,” the Personnel Ministry said in the proposal seeking changes in the IAS (cadre) Rules, 1954. Centre has proposed that each state government shall make available for deputation to the central government (Cont’d on p-7)
Assam logs highest single day spike of 8,072 Covid cases
In the last few days, Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai and Kolkata have crossed their second wave peaks in terms of daily cases. If authorities are to be believed, the peak of the third wave has been surpassed, as the daily cases reported a drop. Should the decreased cases in these cities – which were among the most impacted parts of the country in the last wave – mean the country’s peak has been crossed? Certainly not, experts believe. While the three biggest metros, Delhi, Mumbai

Similarly, while the daily cases in Chennai on Monday were less than those reported on Saturday, the number was significantly higher than last Monday. Bengaluru too painted a similar picture. Usually, cases reported on Monday are fewer than those reported during other days of the week. When asked if the country has surpassed the peak, epidemiologist Dr Chandrakant Lahariya,
while speaking to CNNNews18, said there would not be a traditional peak in this wave as we would witness a phased increase across the country with cases remaining at a high level for a few weeks before cases start declining. “In the current wave and at an individual level, the peak has almost no meaning. People should be aware that if there is transmission in any setting, take precautions. Peak is only for epidemiological and planning purposes. (Cont’d on p-7)

‘Perceptible lack of awareness’ among govt bodies, agencies about flag code, says MHA The Home ministry said the national flag represents hopes and aspirations of the people of the country and hence should occupy a position of honour and there is universal affection and respect for, and loyalty to, the flag. The elections to the 60-member Manipur Assembly would be held in two phases on February 27 and March 3. The counting of votes will take place on March 10. The AMCO said if the first phase of polling was held on Sunday (February 27) it would hurt the religious sentiment of the Christians. “Sunday is a sacred
GUWAHATI, JAN 18 (PTI): Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday said that the roadmap for amicable settlement of border disputes with Meghalaya in six areas of difference has been prepared through mutual consultations at the top level of the two governments. The opposition Congress, however, called for more discussion on the matter, particularly in the state Assembly, saying that the government has proposed an approach in which both states would lose or get some areas. “Our efforts to resolve Assam-Meghalaya border row have started bearing fruits as 6 of the 12 areas of difference have been identified for resolution in the first phase,” Sarma tweeted after an interaction with leaders of political parties of the state on the Assam-Meghalaya boundary dispute. The areas of differences taken up for final settlement in the first phase are Hahim, Gizang, Tarabari, Boklapara, Khanapara-Pillingkata and Ratacherra, he added. Out of the 12 points of

But fixing a polling date on Sunday has led the Christian community in Manipur to question if the Government is deliberately attempting to desacralize its religious significance. “Fur ther more, the AMCO is apprehensive that a large number of voters may refrain themselves from exercising their franchise as the polling day falls on Sunday thus, purposely robbing off the people their right to universal franchise,” the statement said.
Sikkim bans milk from outside on quality issues GANGTOK, JAN 18 (PTI): The Sikkim government on Tuesday temporarily banned the entry of all packaged and canned milk from outside the state saying they are of questionable quality. Buying and selling of packaged milk procured from outside Sikkim will not be allowed from Wednesday, according to a notification issued by the department of animal husbandry and veterinary services. The government has noticed that various forms of fresh, processed and unprocessed milk in pouches and cans are entering the state from outside to be sold in Sikkim. Random tests and consumer observations of such milk supplied by private entities have reported that those products are either inconsistent in quality or not
AIZAWL, JAN 18 (PTI): Mizoram reported 1,280 fresh COVID-19 cases on Tuesday, 1,057 more than the previous day, raising the tally to 1,53,758, a health department official said. The death toll rose to 573 after an 87-year-old man from Lunglei district succumbed to the virus at Zoram Medical College (ZMC) in Aizawl. Mamit assembly constituency MLA Lalzirliana and at least 227 children were among the newly infected people, he said. The state’s single-day positivity rate increased to 17 per cent from 11.27 per cent on Monday. Aizawl district reported the highest number of fresh cases at 551, followed by Lunglei (151) and Khawzawl (114). The northeastern state now has 8,869 active cases, while 1,44,316 patients have recovered from the disease so far. It has thus far tested 15.88 lakh samples for COVID-19. Manipur Cong in damage control mode SITTING MLA SUSPENDED, VP MADE WORKING PREZ AFTER DEFECTION THREAT Correspondent IMPHAL, JAN 18: Amid surfacing infighting, Congress in poll-bound Manipur on Tuesday suspended one of its sitting legislators as a damage control mode. MPCC president on Tuesday suspended its sitting MLA Kh Joykishan who was one of its spokespersons and a primary member of the party before being elevated. The suspension order issued by MPCC general secretary Hareshwar Goswami today stated that the MPCC president has suspended Kh Joykishan from the Indian National Congress (INC) on the recommendation of the Disciplinary Action Committee of MPCC. He was suspended under Article XIX of the Constitution of the INC read with Clause(h) of ‘Miscellaneous’ provided under Article XXVII of the said Constitution, it added. Joykisan who was a BJP legislator, had joined the Congress in the run up to the 2017 general election to the state Assembly and
was re-elected from Thangmeiband constituency in Imphal West district. One of the reasons for his suspension, as per a reliable source in the MPCC, was his prolonged absence from party activities. He had even avoided attending party’s crucial meetings for the last one month. Under the constitution of the INC, a member can be suspended if he fails to attend three meetings of the party consecutively. The suspension of Joykishan came amid speculation that he may leave the Congress to rejoin his previous party BJP. However, whether he will return to his early party or not could not be confirmed for the time being. The move to suspend Joykishan comes at a time when the MPCC is in damage control mode following defections by its leaders, particularly sitting MLAs and ex-MLAs, in the run up to the election to the 60-seat state Assembly. In a move to check further defection, the Congress had appointed former minister Dr. Kh Ratankumar
who recently submitted his resignation from the post of vice president as working president. Ratankumar submitted his resignation on December 16 amid speculation of him joining the JD(U). State JD(U) leaders had also claimed that he (Ratankumar) was among some prominent leaders of the MPCC who approached the party. The next day, Ratankumar announced to the media that he had taken the decision to resign only to show his dissatisfaction with internal matters of the party. AICC general secretary (organization) KC Venugopal has issued an order appointing Kh Ratankumar as the working president of MPCC on Monday. The Congress has been facing defections by its leaders in Manupur. Recently, the party had lost two sitting MLAs - Chaltonlien Amo (who was also a vice president of MPCC) and D Korungthang. Amo joined the saffron fold, while Korungthang switched to NPF to contest the ensuing elections.

Christians in Mnp urge EC not to hold polling on Sunday as it their prayer day
IMPHAL, JAN 18 (IANS): The All Manipur Christian Organisation (AMCO) on Tuesday urged the Election Commission to reschedule the first phase of Assembly polls on February 27 as the day being a Sunday is the prayer day of the community. the scooter and apprehended the rider. The pillion rider, however, jumped of the scooter off and fled towards the crowd of the area. The rider was caught and brought into the police station campus. Upon checking, arm and ammunition were found concealed in the tool box in a white colour bag. The police later identified the rider as Lemsang Singson (36) son of late Hankhohen Singson of Longkaiphon village of the district. State civil police assisted by the police commandos, the elite force of state government to counter insurgency, and Central security forces have been conducting a series of mopping operations across the state, particularly in valley areas, in view of upcoming Republic Day celebration and ensuing elections to the state Assembly on February 27 and March 3. The police have also intensified its random frisking and checking on roads leading to the Imphal, the capital city of the state, besides mopping operations at sensitive areas.

meeting required standards, the notification said. The sources of such milk are not regulated by the Sikkim government. Besides, manual handling those pouches and cans can lead to the spread of Covid-19, it said. The notification said that in view of the safety of consumers of the state, the Sikkim government is imposing a temporary ban on entry of raw or processed milk from outside the state with effect from 19 January 2022. A source in the department of animal husbandry and veterinary services said that the supply of milk from the unregulated market is “minimal” and the state-run Sikkim Milk will be able to fulfill the demand. Milk from outside the state mainly come from Siliguri in neighbouring West Bengal.
Himanta Biswa Sarma disputes between Assam and Meghalaya, these six areas with relatively less critical differences have been taken up in the first phase. “A roadmap for amicable settlement has been prepared based on recommendations of 3 Regional Committees with representatives from both the states. We’ve reached this stage after several rounds of CMlevel talks on the matter,” Sarma said. Representatives of various political parties such as the Congress, CPI(M), Asom Gana Parishad, Bodoland People’s Front and the All India United Democratic Front were present at the meeting. They were briefed on the progress made in the talks so far, the chief minister said.
Regd No. : 07/2022
In the Twitter post, Sarma did not go into details of the “roadmap for amicable settlement”. Talking to PTI after the meeting, Leader of the Opposition Debabrata Saikia of the Congress said a very small portion of the area that is under dispute between the two states has been taken up for resolution. “The government has proposed a give-and-take approach where both states will let go or receive almost an equal area. We feel that there should be a discussion in the Assembly before any proposal is finalised,” Saikia said. The Congress has asked for a discussion on the findings of the regional committees in the Assembly, he said. “We were shown a presentation on the matter,” the Congress leader said. Saikia questioned the absence of Border Area Development Minister Atul Bora in the meeting. “He not only is the minister directly involved, but also heads one of the three regional committees. Only two ministers were present in such a crucial meeting,” Saikia said.

BJP confined Adityanath to his home: Baghel
Bhupesh Baghel and Yogi Adityanath
MATHURA, JAN 18 (PTI): Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel here on Tuesday said the BJP has confined UP CM Yogi Adityanath to his home, apparently referring to his candidature from the Gorakhpur constituency in the state Assembly polls. It shows that they have accepted defeat, said Baghel as he claimed that people are backing the Congress. “In three meetings of Gau-
Bhagwant Mann is AAP’s CM face for Punjab polls
Bhagwant Mann
CHANDIGARH, JAN 18 (PTI): Bhagwant Mann will be the AAP’s chief ministerial face for the February 20 Punjab Assembly polls, the party announced on Tuesday. The Sangrur MP assured people that he will work for their welfare and put the state back on its feet again if the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) is voted to power. Polling for Punjab’s 117 Assembly seats is scheduled to be held on February 20 and the counting of votes will be taken up on March 10. The wait for the AAP’s declaration of its chief ministerial face got over on Tuesday when its national convenor Arvind Kejriwal announced the results of the party’s “Janta Chunegi Apna CM” drive, in which it had asked the people of Punjab who should be its choice for the top post. The AAP had launched a mobile number on January 13, on which people were asked to give their opinion till 5 pm on January 17. The party received over 21.59 lakh responses under the campaign, Kejriwal, who arrived from Delhi to make the announcement, said.
tam Buddh Nagar, the change was visible as farmers and the youth were angry with Modi and Yogi governments,” Baghel told reporters in the presence of Congress candidate Pradeep Mathur. He said women want a change as they feel unsafe under the Yogi government. Moreover, the BJP has confined him to his home, Baghel said. The chief minister also accused the BJP of using religion
to garner votes. The BJP not only uses religion to get votes but now it has gone a step ahead and minted notes by purchasing the land of farmers at cheaper rates and then selling the same at exorbitant rates, Baghel alleged. The Chhattisgarh government is developing places and temples related to Lord Ram since it considers its moral responsibility to protect and develop places of faith and protect culture, he said. While his government has completed the first phase of the 2200-km-long Ram Van Gaman Path, the UP government has failed to do it since it wanted to get votes in lieu of it, he alleged. The BJP did nothing during its 15-year rule in Chhattisgarh, the chief minister alleged. Baghel also slammed the ruling BJP over ED raids against opposition leaders.
ED raids Punjab CM’s kin in probe against ‘illegal’ mining
NEW DELHI/CHANDIGARH, JAN 18 (PTI): The Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Tuesday raided multiple locations in pollbound Punjab, including those linked to a relative of Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi, as part of a money laundering probe against the ‘sand mafia’ and companies linked to alleged illegal sand mining in the border state, officials said. They said at least a dozen locations in the state including in Chandigarh, Mohali, Ludhiana and Pathankot are being covered by the officials of the federal agency. They are being assisted by armed personnel of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF). The action is being undertaken under the provisions of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA). Reacting to the raids, Channi told reporters that relatives of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee were raided during the assembly polls in that
state and the “same pattern” is being followed by the ED in Punjab to “pressure” him, his ministers and Congress party members. “We are ready to handle the pressure...,” he said, adding he had no links with the case. Premises linked to a person identified as Bhupinder Singh alias Honey, a nephew of Channi, are also being covered. Sources said Honey’s links with a person identified as Kudratdeep Singh are being investigated by the agency. Opposition parties have earlier linked Channi with the dealings of Honey which the former had denied. The ED action, sources said, has been initiated after taking cognisance of a 2018 FIR of the Nawanshahr (Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar district) Police and some other such police complaints against some companies and individuals alleged to be involved in the business of illegal sand mining in the state.

NATIONAL 3 Navy personnel killed in explosion on INS Ranvir at Mumbai dockyard
Akhilesh Yadav hits back at BJP on charge of fielding criminals in UP polls
MUMBAI/NEW DELHI, JAN 18 (PTI): Three Navy personnel were killed and 11 injured in an explosion on-board the Indian Naval Ship (INS) Ranvir at the Naval dockyard in Mumbai on Tuesday, officials said. The incident took place at 4.30 pm, they added. “In an unfortunate incident today at Naval Dockyard Mumbai, three naval personnel succumbed to injuries caused by an explosion in an internal compartment on-board INS Ranvir,” the statement by the Indian Navy said. The ship’s crew responded immediately and brought the situation under control quickly, it added. “Three sailors have been killed and 11 injured due to the incident. The names (of the victims) will be made public after informing the families about the incident,” an official said. As per the Navy’s statement, no major “material damage” was reported. “INS Ranvir was on cross-coast operational deployment from the Eastern Naval Command since November 2021 and was due to return to the base port shortly,” it said. A Board of Inquiry has been ordered to investigate the cause of the incident, the statement said.
LU C K N OW, J A N 1 8 (PTI): Under attack over fielding candidates with a criminal background in Uttar Pradesh assembly polls, Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav on Tuesday alleged that his party leaders have been framed in false cases by the ruling BJP. Flanked by new entrant Swami Prasad Maurya, who had quit the BJP, and veteran leader Azam Khan’s son Abdullah Azam, recently released from jail, Yadav also claimed that the maximum number of MLAs with a criminal background are from the saffron party. court on making public information about their candidate’s criminal record. The public interest litigation (PIL) cited the case of SP candidate announced from Kairana constituency - Nahid Hasan - who was arrested recently under the Gangster Act. Terming the PIL as BJP-sponsored, the SP president said that going by this standard, the BJP will not be able to contest anywhere in the country. “The chief minister and deputy chief minister
have a number of cases against them. The maximum number of MLAs having criminal background have reached the assembly from the BJP,” he claimed. The BJP has been accusing the Samajwadi Party of sheltering gangsters and mafias during its rule in Uttar Pradesh. “The Samajwadi Party, which has been protecting criminals, has now given tickets to anti-social elements and history sheeters for several assembly seats, including Kairana, Muzaffarnagar, Siyana, Bulandshahar and Loni in western Uttar Pradesh,” Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath had said on Monday. The SP chief, however, alleged that a large number of his party leaders have been framed in fake cases under the BJP government.
Rahul Gandhi takes ‘teleprompter’ jibe at PM
NEW DELHI, JAN 18 (PTI): After Prime Minister Narendra Modi had to restart his Davos Agenda address, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday took a swipe saying “even the teleprompter could not take so much lies”, even as BJP leaders pointed to a “technical glitch’’ at event organiser World Economic Forum’s end. There was no official reaction from the government or the WEF on the incident. Several Congress leaders and social media users claimed that it was a
“teleprompter gaffe” as Prime Minister Modi had to pause and then restart his special address to the World Economic Forum’s online Davos Agenda 2022 summit, but BJP leaders and many others pointed out that it was a technical glitch due to which the WEF people were not able to patch the PM and requested him to start again. In an apparent dig at Prime Minister Modi, former Congress chief Rahul Gandhi said in a tweet in Hindi, “Even the teleprompter could not take so much lies.”
Narendra Modi
Fact-checking website Alt News co-founder Pratik Sinha said it is unlikely that the prime minister had a teleprompter gaffe. “If you look at the WEF version of the record-
ing of his speech, someone in the background says, ‘Sir, aap unse ek baar pooche ki sab jud gaye kya’ (Sir, ask them once if everyone is connected). This portion is not clear in the video live-streamed on PM’s YouTube channel.” “After this, the PM questions if he and the interpreter can be heard properly, to which (WEF executive chairman) Klaus Schwab responds stating that he can. “However, Schwab interrupts the PM’s speech to give a brief introduction. The PM repeats the whole
speech again,” Sinha said, recounting the events from Monday evening during the prime minister’s address. However, several Congress leaders took a dig at the prime minister over the incident. Congress’ chief spokesperson Randeep Sur jewala said, “Teleprompter se bhashan chal sakta hai, shasan nahin. Kal ye poore desh ki samajh mein aa gaya (You can give a speech but not rule using a teleprompter. The whole country understood this yesterday).

OPINION/EDITORIAL
Nagaland Post VOL. XXXII NO. 43 DIMAPUR, WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 19, 2022
Diversity in politics
O
f five states going to the polls beginning from February 10 in Goa, Manipur, Uttarakhand, Punjab and UP the opinion polls suggest a mixed bag for the BJP and the Congress. As per the survey of electoral trends in the five states that are set to go polls, the BJP is likely to retain UP despite a resurgent Samajwadi Party posing a strong challenge. The Congress is nowhere in the reckoning in UP despite all the hot air being blown by Priyanka Vadra. In the 2017 Assembly elections, the Congress won just seven seats and 5 percent votes- and that too with the support of the Samajwadi Party. This time, the SP has closed all doors for any tie up with the Congress after the disastrous 2017 alliance. No other party wants to have a tie up with the Congress in UP. Priyanka Vadra is trying to grab the attention of the voter with a flurry of populist announcements. She pledged to reserve 40 percent seats for women in ticket distribution for UP elections. This means 161 out of 403 seats in the state. Priyanka’s 40 per cent party tickets to women is neither going to empower women in general, nor is the Congress going to reap benefits out of it. If the Congress were serious about the needs of women, farmers and poor, then it would have made a similar declaration in the remaining states where they are electorally in a good position. The Congress has no organisation worth the name and is only visible at election rallies by its star Gandhi star campaigners. While the BJP is contesting the upcoming polls under Yogi Adityanath, SP under Akhilesh Yadav, and BSP under Mayawati, the Congress has nobody. Whenever asked about whether she’ll be contesting the UP elections, Priyanka ducks the question. Goa and Uttarakhand are states where the Congress may have some chances of beating the BJP. In Goa the BJP could well become the single largest party as the opposition is hopelessly divided. Though the Congress has better chance of upsetting the BJP in Goa, yet its refusal for a pre-poll understanding with the AAP and TMC is only dividing the opposition votes that is advantageous to the BJP . Even in Punjab the AAP is training its guns at the Congress to the benefit of the BJP. However, the blame should go to the Congress high command or the Gandhi siblings for the humiliating its own chief minister Capt.Amarinder. Today Punjab Congress is a divided house between supporters of chief minister Channi and state unit chief Navjyot Singh Siddhu. In Uttarakhand, the Congress has significantly improved its prospects in the latest poll survey over the previous one. The improvement is obviously due to the party veteran Harish Rawat being made the face of the campaign. In Manipur, unless the Congress tightens its grip over its rebellious MLAs and party functionaries, it may end up second to the ruling BJP. Even if Congress becomes the single largest party but short of majority like in 2017, the BJP can still hijack the outcome. In all five states, though BJP’s popularity is not improving, yet on the other hand, in the absence of an able leader from the Congress, the opposition parties will continue to fight each other while fighting the BJP.
DailyDevotion “It Is the Lord!”
Thomas answered and said to Him, “My Lord and my God!” —John 20:28
“Jesus said to her, ‘Give Me a drink’ ” (John 4:7). How many of us are expecting Jesus Christ to quench our thirst when we should be satisfying Him! We should be pouring out our lives, investing our total beings, not drawing on Him to satisfy us. “You shall be witnesses to Me…” (Acts 1:8). That means lives of pure, uncompromising, and unrestrained devotion to the Lord Jesus, which will be satisfying to Him wherever He may send us. Beware of anything that competes with your loyalty to Jesus Christ. The greatest competitor of true devotion to Jesus is the service we do for Him. It is easier to serve than to pour out our lives completely for Him. The goal of the call of God is His satisfaction, not simply that we should do something for Him. We are not sent to do battle for God, but to be used by God in His battles. Are we more devoted to service than we are to Jesus Christ Himself?

Financial literacy, a key trend among today’s youth
Y
oung people are increasingly signing up for financial literacy classes, which are conducted by India’s leading financial institutions and are fueled by social media influencers who give financial advise but are often untrained to do so. There was a time when Indian youngsters received financial guidance mostly through popular novels such as ‘Rich Dad, Poor Dad.’ Despite the excellent concepts, the text was unrelatable to the Indian reader, and the counsel was impractical. Professional guidance, on the other hand, was out of reach due to the high expense of engaging a financial planner. As a result, the Indian retail investor was mostly absent. That was back in the day. Today is different. Financial indepen-
M
dence and financial freedom have grown widespread in today’s world, thanks to a growing culture that values entrepreneurs and wealth producers. It is being promoted by young people who no longer consider employment as their only source of survival and development. Instead, an increasing number of people believe that their money should work for them. Change in the way we look at investing These youth understand that investing is crucial to wealth creation and are not afraid to try out different modes. A case in point is the huge interest generated by the IPOs of new-age startups, the growing clamour for access to cryptocurrencies, and more. The social media pull - pros and cons
any among the most successful businessmen of our times have written about their experience of what they passed through in reaching to the top and what learning they could draw from it for sharing with the newer generations - in the philanthropic spirit of giving a ‘gift’ to the latter. Achievers with an intellectual bent of mind and a capacity for deep observation and analysis have this very human trait of trying to leave behind a legacy for the entrepreneurs coming after them - role of a genuine ‘teacher’ perhaps gives them an ultimate satisfaction that went beyond the domain of material success. Glancing through the highly commended works of Ray Dalio an American billionaire investor on ‘principles that will help you to get what you want out of life’, one is struck by the thought that outside of the world of business, Intelligence is one profession that practised these basic points of approach for successfully achieving the goals. The logic of this perhaps lies in three great similarities between Intelligence and the world of business at large. First, all businesses like intelligence are about human activity - the threat to security or the risk in business is often traceable to the actions of an enemy or an adversarial competitor. ‘Prior information’ can be collected only on the doings of human beings- there was little scope of getting it in regard to
A huge community of influencers who routinely discuss wealth creation and personal finance management is fueling this interest. They use social media to share their wealth-building experiences, voice their views, and offer advise. They’ve steadily increased their clout. Experts in personal finance are concerned about their recommendations because a big proportion of influencers lack the professional skills required to give guidance. There’s also the issue of entrenched interests in promoting a specific viewpoint. Small-time investors with insufficient knowledge are frequently forced to pay the price for a decision that does not pan out in the market. They could be acting under the guise of counsel posing as knowledge.
Taking control of one’s financial future As a result, a growing percentage of young professionals recognise the need of financial literacy. This has resulted in an increasing trend, thanks in part to the ability to learn remotely. Many institutions and specialists have teamed up to give financial literacy and awareness courses that include content that is relevant to Indian customers, well-researched, and objective. There are classes that are specifically designed for entrepreneurs, small company owners, and women. Getting the message across to non-finance folks While financial literacy is a hot topic right now, organisations like the National Stock Exchange have been offering such classes for over a decade.
So far, they’ve primarily catered to major corporations. “Financial literacy and management is a significant gap left in our education generally,” says RehanaD’Suza, Vice President & Head of Business Development, National Stock Exchange of India Limited, on the need to broaden understanding. It causes a complete lack of confidence in young professionals, making them vulnerable to fraud and poor financial judgments. Popular advice gained from the media or social media is frequently skewed or inaccurate. Corporate clients rely on us to offer accurate, up-to-date, objective, wellresearched, and successful material.” The majority of their audience is made up of non-financial persons who find it difficult to grasp the
Principles that define success
acts of Nature. Secondly, a fuller awareness of human behaviour and psyche helps because in both these spheres of work successful interactions are a key to progress. And finally, in the age of technology - particularly in the context of the transformative shift of the world to the age of Information as a result of the success of IT revolution - human intervention for reading what a process or a machine had produced, remained a vital requirement of successful decision-making. It is in this backdrop that the working of an Intelligence organisation endorses and legitimises many basic postulations of Ray Dalio even though a word of caution would be in order about the business leaders of the twentieth century not being fully abreast of the new paradigms set by the post-IT revolution world, for success -in the areas of instant communication across geographical frontiers, advent of ‘smart’ players who could compete with much bigger and financially stronger corporates and the new concepts of human resource development that invoked up -skilling and reorganisation of job fits. One can shortlist five most significant ‘principles’ of work mentioned by Dalio that opened up the prospects of success and which also were among the fundamentals traditionally practised by intelligence professionals. First is the overriding importance of complete-looking information in decision-making. Dalio drives this point in many
ways. According to him, one should not be surprised over something just because one had not encountered it earlier -- it could have happened in the historical past not in one’s knowledge. Further, only human beings tend to have a ‘modus operandi’ that made their past an important source of information for the future. Moreover, risks are relatable to deficiency of information -- if you are missing something you better avoid having an opinion. In the profession of Intelligence, information is looked upon as something that made the difference between a ‘decision’ and a ‘guess’. In fact, intelligence here is also described as ‘information for action’. This suggests that even in business one can not sit on information of intelligence value- it should lead to action or a considered decision about not taking any action. Another ‘principle’ highlighted by Ray is that truth or an accurate understanding of reality is the essential foundation of any good outcome. Now Intelligence by definition is information tested for its reliability and relevance. An Intelligence organisation can sometimes proceed with incomplete information but never with unverified facts. In this age of ‘misinformation’ on social media and ‘disinformation’ through fake news, business decisions must rest on trustworthy information about the ‘external environ’ that would affect the enterprise. Corporates now invest significantly
on arrangements made for collection and analysis of ‘business intelligence’ covering spheres of politics, law and order, economic development, socio- cultural attitudes and technological advancement. This is an ongoing exercise since factors impacting on business or security could change and call for new responses. Thirdly, a great principle followed by Intelligence profession - so often missed by people in day-to-day life - is never to mix wishful thinking, personal biases and ‘group think’ in decision -making. This finds an echo in Dalio’s work by way of an advice about ‘not being hung up on how things should be and miss out on how they are’ or ‘not confusing what you wish were true with what is really true’. In the profession of Intelligence one is trained to draw a line between perceptions and realities. A fourth fundamental of work methodology of successful people is to keep the focus on the mission and leave no stone unturned for achieving it in a planned way. Dalio’s prescription for having a clear goal, not accepting any impediments and diagnosing the problem in order to get round it, is akin to the methodology of Intelligence where one sees the goal and then designs a plan to achieve it choosing a path that will work. Intelligence totally follows the principle- never rule out a goal because you think it is unachievable. Intelligence never says no to any task on that count.
foundations of finance. As a result, these organisations frequently collaborate with communication experts to convey their message through innovative means. People who used to find financial literacy seminars uninteresting - because they found the topic scary and difficult to relate to - are now interested in seeing 12-minute long street dramas. Using an artistic medium to demystify such a subject helps us catch the audience’s attention before a facilitator begins serious discussions on themes such as savings, investments, and other topics.” Such measures contribute to a more favourable investment climate, encouraging young people to increase their participation in the economy while benefiting from overall growth. Shikha Mittal
Last but not the least, Ray’s perceptive observation that to be able ‘to evolve was the greatest accomplishment of man’, leads to many useful derivations. He hints at willingness to coursecorrect on the basis of learning from what had happened. Intelligence is quite prepared to deal with a shift in the scenario and is the practitioner of a rolling plan in pursuit of an operational goal. A mind-frame imbued with confidence about success is what Intelligence profession provides to its members. There is no absolute ‘failure’ in Intelligence - failure is looked upon as an honest effort that did not succeed -and the organisation gets going on handling the challenge with an alternate plan evolved out of the experience analysed from all angles. Successful people have an appetite for relentless pursuit of their mission with an attitude of willingness to assimilate any information update that might call for suitable adjustments in both ‘direction’ and ‘methodology’. The thought that achievements in business depended on principles followed in the profession of Intelligence proves the point that while money and manpower were essential, it is primarily the intellectual abilities of the leaders driving the business that became a fundamental ingredient of success there. Stress, uncertainty force youths to switch jobs Scientists discover new part of the body

he world is changing, so are the ways of working, thinking and behaviour of the workforce. There is a change in the pattern that has been going on for years. Be it the growing trend of work from home (WFH) or the problem of maintaining a proper balance between home and work life, people are getting confused in working in the traditional style. In search of a better future, relatively new age employees with less experience are more likely to consider switching jobs frequently this year. Such a trend has come to the fore in a recent job survey conducted by LinkedIn India. The recently released report predicts that in the year 2022, around 82 per cent of the workforce is considering changing their present job. Most of them are employees who have hardly one or two years of working experience. Let me tell you that LinkedIn is a work oriented social media site that mainly focus on employment and career related issues and both job providers and job seekers are active on this website. Recently LinkedIn India has also launched its Hindi service, so that more and more Indian professionals can connect on this site. This job change trend has come to the fore at a time when the country is once again in the grip of the third wave of Covid 19 pandemic. Not only this, recently the unemployment rate has also shown the growing trend. According to the Center for Monitoring Indian Economy (CMIE), the unemployment rate in the country stood at 7.9 per cent in December 2021, compared to 7 per cent in November. The organisation also says that the unemployment rate
in urban areas reached 9.3 per cent in December. LinkedIn’s survey is based on the views of more than a thousand people in India. Social media is proving to be a good option for the youth to search for new jobs. It is estimated that more than 80 percent of employers search for employees on social media. According to a report by Jobcast, 93 percent of employers use LinkedIn for recruitments. Similarly, 66 percent of employers use Facebook, and 54 percent use Twitter. When it comes to job seekers, only 36 percent of people are on LinkedIn, 40 percent are on Twitter, and 83 percent are on Facebook. Through social media, such people easily get jobs, whose social profile looks good, as well as whose case has been referred to by many people. Job seekers should post their social media thoughtfully. The LinkedIn survey shows that 30 percent of people are leaving their current jobs due to lack of balance between work and life, 28 per cent feel that they are not getting proper salary, while 23 per cent are looking for a better career. Actually employees are seeking more flexibility in working hours and days. Apart from this, the desire for a good salary is paramount. Another factor that is increasing stress among employees is distance from family, growing health concerns and uncertainty about the future. This has had a profound impact on the mental health of the people in recent times. Covid pandemic will change the world in many ways. Narvijay Yadav The writer is a senior journalist and columnist.

he newly discovered muscle layer runs from the back of the cheekbone to the anterior muscular process of the lower jaw. (S= superficial layer, D= deep layer, C= coronoid layer) (Image credit: Jens. C. Türp, University of Basel / UZB) Scientists recently uncovered a part of the body that had never been described before: a deep layer of muscle in the masseter, which raises the lower jaw and is critical for chewing. Modern anatomy textbooks describe the masseter muscle as having two layers, one deep and one superficial. “However, a few historical texts mention the possible existence of a third layer as well, but they are extremely inconsistent as to its position,” the study authors wrote in a new report, published on Dec. 2 in the online edition of the journal Annals of Anatomy. So the team decided to check whether the prominent jaw muscle might have a hidden, superdeep layer, as the historical texts suggest.
To do so, they dissected 12 human cadaver heads that had been preserved in formaldehyde; they also took CT scans of 16 “fresh” cadavers and reviewed an MRI scan from a living subject, according to the report. Through these examinations, they identified an “anatomically distinct” third layer of the masseter muscle. This deep, deep layer runs from the zygomatic process — a bony projection that forms part of the “cheek bones” and can be felt just in front of the ear — to the coronoid process — a triangular projection on the lower jawbone. “This deep section of the masseter muscle is clearly distinguishable from the two other layers in terms of its course and function,” first author Szilvia Mezey, a senior lecturer in the Department of Biomedicine at the University of Basel in Switzerland, said in a statement. Based on the arrangement of the muscle fibers, the muscle layer likely helps stabilize the lower jaw by “elevating and retracting”
the coronoid process, the team wrote in their report. And in fact, the newfound muscle layer is the only part of the masseter that can pull the jawbone backward, Mezey said. “Although it’s generally assumed that anatomical research in the last 100 years has left no stone unturned, our finding is a bit like zoologists discovering a new species of vertebrate,” senior author Dr. Jens Christoph Türp, a professor and clinician at the University Center for Dental Medicine Basel, said in the statement. In their paper, the team proposed that the newfound muscle layer be named “Musculus masseter pars coronidea,” meaning “coronoid part of the masseter.” The discovery could be important in a clinical context, because knowing about the muscle layer could help doctors to both better perform surgeries in that region of the jaw and better treat conditions involving the joint that joins the jawbone to the skull, they noted. such a number of eligible officers of various levels to the extent of the Central Deputation Reserve prescribed under existing regulations, adjusted proportionately by the number of officers available with the state government concerned vis-à-vis the total authorised strength of the state cadre at a given point of time. The actual number of officers to be deputed to the central government shall be decided by the central government in consultation with the state government concerned, the new rule proposes. In case of any disagreement, the matter shall be decided by the central government and the state government or state governments concerned shall give effect to the decision of the central government “within a specified time”, it has proposed. Existing rules did not mention any time limit for deciding on such disagreement. The proposal to change the rules was sent to the chief secretaries of all the state governments on December 20, 2021. They were asked to furnish their comments by January 5, 2022. The Centre had in June last year asked all state governments to nominate more officers for central deputation at the level of deputy secretary, director and joint secretary, citing their shortage. Officers of the level of deputy secretary/director and above are usu-
ally appointed in central government ministries/ departments (i.e. on central deputation) under the Central Staffing Scheme (CSS). Every cadre – a state/ states or states and union territories -- is allowed a deputation reserve to ensure that officers have the opportunity to work on deputation including that under the Central Staffing Scheme, which adds to their experience. It is requested that a larger number of officers may kindly be recommended for the appointment at DS/Director/JS level under the Central Staffing Scheme so that the central deputation reserve/ deputation reserves are duly utilised for this purpose, the Personnel Ministry had said in a communique.
Has the Covid 3rd... (From p-1) The use of daily new Covid-19 cases is not a right indicator to track peak as the cases are coming down as the testing approach has been changed and asymptomatic are not being tested the way they were before January 10. Therefore, daily new Covid-19 cases data is not comparable,” he told CNN-News18. Dr Lahariya added that a better approach to track the pandemic would now be test positivity rate and hospital bed occupancy rate. On the other hand, immunologist Dr Vineeta Bal says that different cities and districts may have different peaks and there will be different waves in different parts of the country. “…People talk about waves – nationwide or statewide – but those are the misconceptions. The way cases spread varies from area to area. When metros were affected, Uttar Pradesh and Bihar were showing no cases, but now they are. This means that from metros to smaller cities and villages, the spread is happening. So, one cannot say that there was a nationwide wave,” she told CNN-News18.

He also said public instead of being helpful by not crowding the sites of fire incidents, instead milled around and blocked the site and making it impossible for fire personnel to do their duties. Dimapur Fire Station Central has old four fire tenders, two preserved water tankers and 49 fire fighters, all of which were on duty 24x7 he said. He said 28 fire calls were received by the fire station between January 1 and December 31 2021, with eight major fire outbreaks, two at Lohorijan (Assam), Naharbari colony, St Mary (Church Road), Mishikito village, Thilixu area, Purana Bazar and Ura Villa Colony, including 20 minor outbreaks. He said the station received 26 fire calls in 2020. He disclosed that fire calls were received mostly in the months of March and December which happen to be mostly during windy season and winter months when heaters, holiday decorations, winter storms and candles contributed to fire. Renbenthung maintained that most of the fire outbreaks occurred due to negligence and uncertified and cheap wiring. He also appealed to people to douse fireplaces in kitchens as most fires start from there.

MUMBAI, JAN 18 (IANS): Automobile manufacturer Tata Motors will marginally increase the price of its passenger vehicles from Wednesday (January 19). According to the company, there will be an average increase of 0.9 per cent, depending on the variant and model. “At the same time, the company has also taken a reduction of up to Rs 10,000 on specific variants, in response to feedback from customers. “While the company is absorbing a significant portion of the increased costs, the steep rise in overall input costs has compelled it to pass on some proportion through this minimal price hike.” Additionally, the company has decided to offer ‘price protection’ on Tata cars booked on or before January 18.

Spot USD/INR has crossed and sustained above the near-term hurdle of 74.50, the 100 days simple average, has now opened the way for 75 levels while support has been shifted to 74.25,” he said.

MUMBAI, JAN 18 (PTI): Continuing its fall for the third consecutive session, the rupee on Tuesday slumped 33 paise to close at 74.58 (provisional) against the US dollar as strong American currency and elevated crude oil prices continue to weigh on investor sentiments. Forex traders said muted domestic equities and dollar buying by banks on behalf of importers also dragged the local unit down. At the interbank foreign exchange market, the local currency opened at 74.36 against the American currency and witnessed an intra-day low of 74.60 during the session. The rupee finally settled at 74.58, down 33 paise over its previous close of 74.25 against the greenback. T h e d o l l a r i n d ex , which gauges the greenback’s strength against a basket of six currencies, was trading 0.09 per cent up at 95.34. “Higher crude oil prices and risk-off sentiments following a surge in bond yields are enough for the rupee to become the worstperforming currency among Asian currencies,” said Dilip Parmar, Research Analyst, HDFC Securities.

Last September, Ford India announced its decision to wind down vehicle assembly in Sanand in Gujarat by the fourth quarter of 2021, and vehicle and engine manufacturing in Chennai by the second quarter of 2022. Ford India has four plants in the country -- vehicle and engine plants in Chennai and Sanand. Ford’s ‘quit India’ decision will result in an uncertain future for about 5,300 employees -- workers and staff, the officials said last year. The Chennai plant has about 2,700 associates (permanent workers) and about 600 staff.

The deferment came as several states flagged higher tax rates on textile products to be put on hold. The decision by the Council gave a breathing space to the industry. Accordingly, stocks of several textile firms zoomed. Till date, shares of Bhilwara Spinners, Nitin Spinners and Nahar Spinning Mills have seen a sharp rally. The shares of Bhilwara Spinners, Nitin Spinners and Nahar Spinning Mills companies rose 252 per cent, 316 per cent, 711 per cent, respectively, over the past one-year period. NEW DELHI, JAN 18 (PTI): International oil prices jumped to the highest level since 2014, topping USD 87 a barrel but domestic petrol and diesel prices remained unchanged for the 74th day in a row - a freeze that may be linked to ensuing assembly elections in states like Uttar Pradesh and Punjab. Brent - the key global oil benchmark - soared to USD 87.7 per barrel mostly due to rising geopolitical tensions and supply-side disturbances due to Yemen’s Houthi group’s attack on oil facilities in the United Arab Emirates. Also, global inventories are waning. The attack, some analysts believe, may lead to more hostile behaviour between the two power centres in the Middle East - Iran and Saudi Arabia. But domestic fuel prices - which are directly linked to international oil prices - have not been revised for over two months now. Petrol costs Rs 95.41 a litre in Delhi and diesel is priced at Rs 86.67.

NEW DELHI, JAN 18 (IANS): Shares in textile business have witnessed a consistent uptick in the recent months due to various policy measures and on hopes of a firm outlook for the sector going ahead. Besides, the GST council’s recent move to defer rate hike on textiles has buoyed investors’ sentiment. In its latest GST council meeting, it was unanimously decided to defer a hike in rates on textiles from 5 per cent to 12 per cent, which was to come into effect from January 1. The matter will be discussed again in the next council meeting.
was due Centre’s production-linked incentive (PLI) schemes in the key manufacturing sectors, which included the textiles sector. On September 8, 2021, the Union Cabinet had cleared the PLI scheme for the textile sector with an estimated budget outlay of Rs 10,683 crore. The Centre, through the scheme, aims to provide a big fillip to the man-made fibres and technical textiles segments by promoting industries that invest in the production of some select textile categories. Consequently, shares Of companies such as Alok Industries rose 40 per cent, Trident 333 per cent, KPR Mill 315 per cent, Arvind 195 per cent, Welspun India 134 per cent, Gokaldas Exports 344 per cent, Lux Industries 147 per cent, Filatex India 109 per cent, and Ambika Cotton Mills 105 per cent during the period. In addition, analysts said that the stock price movement is likely to continue in the near future.

Russia moves more troops westward amid tensions MOSCOW, JAN 18 (AP): Russia is sending troops from the countr y’s far east to Belarus for major war games, officials said Tuesday, in a deployment further beefing up Russian military assets near Ukraine amid Western fears of an invasion. Deputy Defence Minister Alexander Fomin said the drills are intended to practice a joint response to external threats by the alliance of Russia and Belarus, which have close political, economic and military ties. Fomin didn’t say how many troops and weapons were being redeployed for the exercises, or give the number of troops that will be involved in the war games. Ukrainian officials have warned that Russia could launch an attack from various directions, including from the territory of its ally Belarus. The deployment would dramatically bolster an estimated 100,000 troops with tanks and other heavy weapons amassed near Ukraine in

what the West fears could be a prelude to an invasion. Russia has denied an intention to attack its ex-Soviet neighbour, but demanded guarantees from the West that NATO will not expand to Ukraine or other exSoviet nations or place its troops and weapons there. Washington and its allies firmly rejected Moscow’s demands during last week’s Russia-US negotiations in Geneva and a related NATO-Russia meeting in Brussels. Fomin said the drills, which involve an unspecified number of troops from Russia’s Eastern Military District that encompasses Eastern Siberia and the
Far East, reflect the need to practice concentrating the country’s entire military potential in western Russia. “A situation may arise when forces and means of the regional group of forces will be insufficient to ensure reliable security of the union state, and we must be ready to strengthen it,” Fomin said at a meeting with foreign military attaches. “We have reached an understanding with Belarus that it’s necessary to engage the entire military potential for joint defence.” Belarus’ authoritarian president, Alexander Lukashenko said the joint maneuvers will be conducted on Belarus’ western border and also in the country’s south, where it borders Ukraine. Lukashenko has increasingly relied on the Kremlin’s support amid Western sanctions over a brutal crackdown on domestic protests. The US and its allies have urged Russia to deescalate the situation by calling the troops back to their barracks.

Covid pandemic ‘nowhere near over’, says WHO chief
GENEVA, JAN 18 (AFP): The COVID-19 pandemic is far from over, the World Health Organization chief said Tuesday, cautioning against a narrative that the fast-spreading Omicron variant is risk-free. “This pandemic is nowhere near over,” Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus told reporters from WHO’s headquarters in Geneva. Tedros warned against dismissing as mild the coronavirus variant Omicron, which has spread like wildfire around the globe since it was first detected in southern Africa in November. The Omicron variant is much more contagious than previous strains but seems to cause less serious disease. That has triggered a debate on the virus passing from being a pandemic to becoming endemic-- with the implication that the danger will have passed. But the WHO has warned that the sheer numbers of people infected will mean many vulnerable people are still falling seriously ill and dying. “Omicron may be less
Tedros A Ghebreyesus
severe, on average, but the narrative that it is a mild disease is misleading,” Tedros said. “Make no mistake: Omicron is causing hospitalisations and deaths, and even the less severe cases are inundating health facilities.” He said there were indications that the Omicron-fuelled surge of Covid cases may have peaked in some countries. This, he said, “gives hope that the worst of this latest wave is done with, but no country is out of the woods yet”. “Vaccines may be less effective at preventing infection and transmission of Omicron than they were for previous variants, but they still are exceptionally good at preventing serious disease and death,” he said.
UK PM Boris Johnson forced to deny ex-aide’s damaging ‘partygate’ attack LONDON, JAN 18 (PTI): Boris Johnson is on Tuesday battling further charges around the “partygate” scandal after his former top aide turned fierce critic alleged that the British prime minister had lied to Parliament about a drinks gathering he attended during lockdown. Dominic Cummings was a key official at 10 Downing Street in May 2020 at the time of a garden party for which Johnson apologised to the House of Commons last week, when he said he “believed implicitly” that it was a work event. However, Cummings, his Chief Strategy Adviser at the time, took to his online blog to claim that his boss was fully aware that it was in fact a party and that he would “swear under oath” that he had even warned him against it and wanted it cancelled. “I’m saying categorically that nobody told me, nobody said this was something that was against the rules, doing something that wasn’t a work event because frankly, I can’t imagine why it would have gone ahead or
Boris Johnson
it would have been allowed to go ahead if it was against the rules,” Johnson told reporters during a tour of a hospital in north London. “My memory is going out into the garden for about 25 minutes, which I implicitly thought was a work event, and talking to staff, thanking staff. I then went back to my office and continued my work,” he said. Chancellor Rishi Sunak, widely touted as a frontrunner to step in as the UK’s first Indian-origin prime minister should Johnson be made to resign over the engulfing scandal, spoke out firmly on Tuesday in favour of the embattled leader when asked on camera by ‘Sky News’ if he believed the premier was telling the truth. “Of course I do. The prime minister set out his understanding of this mat-
ter in Parliament last week and I refer you to his words. As you know, Sue Gray is conducting an inquiry into this matter and I fully support the Prime Minister’s request for patience while that inquiry concludes,” Sunak said. Earlier, Johnson’s office insisted it was “untrue” to say Johnson was “warned about the event” and reiterated the line being taken by government ministers that a Cabinet Office inquiry into the issue should be allowed to conclude and determine all the facts. “As he said earlier, he believed implicitly that this was a work event. He has apologised to the House and is committed to making a further statement once the investigation concludes,” a No. 10 Downing Street spokesperson said. However, Cummings who famously left Downing Street in November 2020 with a box in hand – indicative of an unceremonious exit after a much-publicised power struggle within the top ranks of the Prime Minister’s Office – has disputed this account from Johnson’s office.
Palestine warns Pak PM Imran Khan a ‘religion exploiter’: Oppn PML-N against Nepal’s Province 2 bordering eviction in East Jerusalem India named ‘Madhes Pradesh’
Imran Khan
Shehbaz Sharif
Leader in National Assembly Shehbaz Sharif said in a tweet. “Such a self-serving approach will wreak greater damage upon the polity than is being understood,” he lamented. PML-N Information Secretary Marriyum Aurangzeb said that Imran Khan is a “religion exploiter as he is using religious concepts and reforms only for political gains and toxic populism.”
“Imran’s article is like hiding in a mosque after committing major theft. Imran’s shameless strategy of hiding behind religion and desecrating the name of Islam, Riyaasat-e-Madina (the state of Madina at the time of Prophet Muhammad pbuh) and holy names are aimed at hiding his looting, plundering, incompetence and incapacity,” she said. The former federal information minister said
only a “megalomaniacal, egotistical, stubborn, and arrogant person living in denial could write such a self-righteous article.” “Imran’s mental state of denial and desperation to save his sinking boat is exposed by this article after ruining the country in three years in power,” the PMLN leader lambasted. Imran and his government is the living manifestation of everything the Riyaasat-e-Madina was not and advised against. It is rich that a person who takes pride in his bigotry and hypocrisy has the audacity to talk about Riyaasat-e-Madina. The ruler remained asleep 20 kilometers away from Murree where dozens died, and has still not visited the victims’ families, should keep his mouth shut about Riyaasat-e-Madina, Aurangzeb said.
RAMALLAH, JAN 18 (IANS): Palestine has warned Israel against evicting Palestinian families from their homes in East Jerusalem. “The Israeli attempts to evict the Salhiya family from their home in Sheikh Jarrah neighbourhood fall within the framework of forced displacement,” said President Mahmoud Abbas in a statement, stressing that the actions contravened international and humanitarian law. The statement said Israel’s use of force for eviction and approval of building thousands of settlement units would escalate tensions in the Palestinian territories, reports Xinhua news agency. The evacuation “might be a prelude to a process of forced displacement of dozens of Palestinian families from their homes in East Jerusalem”, the statement added.
KATHMANDU, JAN 18 (PTI): Nepal’s south-eastern Province 2 bordering India has been named Madhes Pradesh with Janakpur retained as its capital, settling a long-standing debate on the region’s official reference after it was made a province in 2015. The Provincial Assembly on Monday voted in two-thirds majority for both decisions. Of the 99 voting members, 78 voted for Janakpur as capital and 80 voted for the provincial name Madhes. Madhes is Nepal’s smallest province in terms of area but second largest in terms of population. andy Moore has revealed she’s got new music “coming very soon”. The 37-year-old star released her sixth album ‘Silver Landings’ - her first in 11 years - in 2020, and she is now working on new material. In a lengthy Instagram post, she wrote: “Nearly 2 years ago, my first record in 11 years came into the world. “We were 4 days away from leaving for my first tour since 2007 when the pandemic shut the world down. “It was hard to sort through the myriad of emotions of what it took to make that music: the disappointment and sorrow of unfulfilled dreams…. all while we were collectively grappling with and grieving the tragedy unfolding around the globe. “So I turned back to music because that was the only catharsis I could find while stuck at home.” She described the record as “the mark of the ultimate chapter surrounding impending parenthood”, and confirmed her future plans. She continued: “Anyway…. all of this to tell you that there is new music coming very soon… and a tour! “And I’m staying present and open to this experience revealing itself exactly how it’s supposed to.
“**** PS: your comments, love and encouragement are so appreciated. Year already made. Thanks, friends!! Hope to see you on the road soon!! Xoxoxo. job that literally is the best job I’ve ever had. I’m so creatively fulfilled. I love the people I work with. I love the material I get to work with. “It’s like I’m able to really pour so much of myself into that, but music is a whole other being. It is truly me. I’m not hiding behind a character or someone else’s words.” (Contactmusic)

‘Jai Bhim’ video makes its way to YouTube channel of the Oscars
T
he official YouTube channel of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has chosen to feature a video of director Gnanavel explaining his critically acclaimed courtroom drama ‘Jai Bhim’, under its ‘Scene At the Academy’ segment. The 12 minute 47 second video clip begins with the opening scenes of the film. It then shows director Gnanavel explaining about the theme of the film. This is followed by important sequences from the film. In the video, director Gnanavel says, “The opening scene of the film shows the police segregating tribal people on the basis of caste. You could call it the film’s theme. How easily a powerful system can brand the oppressed as habitual offenders
on the basis of caste. “When a privileged person is in trouble, their whole community shows up to fight. But for minorities like tribal people? They have no hope or scope. “It is said that racism is the worst kind of discrimination worldwide. But casteism has several layers of discrimination built into it. If racism is like a spring which swirls up, those in the bottom can eventually fight their way to the top. But casteism is heirarchial. You can’t move up or forward. One caste will stop you. If you make it past them, another will get you. “This film is not just about custodial violence faced by tribal people. It is about how caste discrimination forms the basis of custodial discrimination.” (IANS)

Spezia rally to stun AC Milan in Serie A amid controversy ROME, JAN 18 (IANS): AC Milan squandered a one-goal lead to be upset by Spezia 2-1 in a controversial game at San Siro here. Milan had claimed three consecutive league wins before Monday’s game, and a win would have lifted them to the top place. The home side was utterly dominant in the first half, as Rafael Leao was active and won a penalty in the 43rd minute for Milan, but Theo Hernandez scuffed it wide. Leao kept wreaking havoc and finally found the back of the net on the stroke of halftime when Rade Krunic’s long pass found the Portuguese, who outpaced the defender to loop over an on-rushing goalkeeper. Spezia pulled back on level terms in the 63rd minute as Daniele Verde rolled across from the left and Kevin Agudelo tapped it in undisturbed. ISL: Odisha FC beat NE United FC 2-0
FAT O R DA , J A N 1 8 (AGENCIES): Odisha FC rose to fifth place with a 2-0 victory over NorthEast United in the latest 2021-22 Hero Indian Super League encounter at the PJN Stadium in Fatorda. The win takes OFC from ninth to fifth with only one point separating them from the fourth-placed Mumbai City FC. As for Khalid Jamil and Co, the winless streak extends to five games as they sit in 10th place in the standings. Daniel Lalhlimpuia (17’) gave the Kalinga Warriors an early lead with his first goal of the season. Aridai Suarez (22’) extended the advantage five minutes later, being involved in both goals. Early exchanges saw both sides create halfchances to score. Suhair Vadakkepeedika provided Lalkhawpuimawia with a decent chance but the forward completely miscued his shot from 12-yards out, to the anger of Khalid Jamil on the sideline. NEUFC was punished moments later after the opening goal was scored by Daniel Lalhlimpuia with
halftime break. The second half saw the Highlanders push for a goal with Hernan Santana blasting his volley against the crossbar from longrange. Post the hour mark, Nandhakumar Sekar who came on from the bench had a great chance to score the third but had his shot saved in a one-on-one situation. Australian Open: Medvedev, Rublev progress MELBOURNE, JAN 18 (IANS): World No.2 tennis player, Daniil Medvedev of Russia, was ruthless in his decimation of Henri Laaksonen, defeating the Swiss player 6-1, 6-4, 7-6(3) in his opening match of the Australian Open at the Rod Laver Arena on Tuesday. With a 13-1 record across the Australian Open and US Open in 2021, the Russian dropped just three sets in those 13 victories, and would be looking for a second consecutive Grand Slam after his triumph at the Flushing Meadows. World No. 6 and fourtime Grand Slam quarterfinalist Andrey Rublev of Russia also began his march towards another Grand Slam second week with a 6-3, 6-2, 6-2 win over Italy’s Gianluca Mager in his 2022 debut. Medvedev dropped serve in the opening game and then surrendered little else over the one-hour, 54-minute contest. The 2021 Australian Open finalist did not face a break point in sets two and three, though Laaksonen allowed just one break point on his own serve in that period. However, Medvedev’s patience paid off at

S h o u l d M e dve d ev win at Melbourne Park, he would become the first man in the Open Era to follow up his maiden Grand Slam title with another title in his next major appearance. This feat has been accomplished five times on the WTA, most recently by Naomi Osaka (2018 US Open, 2019 Aus-
tralian Open). Rublev was off to a near-perfect start, as the clean hitter produced 31 winners to just 13 errors in the one-hour, 24-minute contest against Mager. After winning the ATP Cup and Davis Cup with the Russian Tennis Federation in 2021, Rublev was set to begin his 2022 campaign at this year’s ATP Cup before a positive COVID-19 test ruled him out. He said he felt “a bit tired” before Tuesday’s match due to the layoff, but was pleased with his performance on the day. Rublev now awaits the winner of the match between Ricardas Berankis of Lithuania and Roberto Carballes Baena of Spain. Making his first ap-
