2012 GT seniority list responsible for non-promotion of teachers: RPP DIMAPUR, JUN 30 (NPN): Rising People’s Party (RPP) said the contentious 2012 graduate teachers’ (GT) seniority list was the reason why no graduate teachers had been promoted to the 300 posts of assistant headmasters (AHMs) and headmasters’ (HMs) posts for the past 10 years. RPP said that due to this, eastern Nagaland had suffered so much in terms of education, resulting in the perpetual backwardness of the region. Referring to NBSE data, RPP said the HSLC pass percentage in eastern Nagaland in 2022 went down to 15.5% from 24.25% in 2021. Such was the situation in the State’s “dirtiest” department that former students now outranked their former teachers in the seniority list due for promotion as drawn up by
the Department of School Education (DoSE), the party said in a statement. Accusing DoSE of having a “dirty tricks section headed by shamans”, RPP alleged that many primary teachers had managed to sneak into the 2012 GT seniority list, thereby victimizing GTs. Further, RPP said different yardsticks were used in drawing up the 2012 GT seniority list. Pointing out that regularisation being the yardstick for drawing up the list, it explained that a student who was previously under the tutelage of an “ad hoc teacher” was now “senior” because when the student decided to enter the profession, his entry point was as a “regularised teacher”. And the “ad hoc teacher” was now below in the seniority list because he or she was only “regularised” after the former
student, it added. Declaring that it fully sympathised with the grievances of All Nagaland Graduate Teachers’ Forum (ANGTF) on the issue, RPP said it fully supported the “one-time” measure suggested by the forum to resolve the promotion impasse in the department that all graduate teachers who had completed 30 years of service be promoted to AHMs and HMs with immediate effect. Alleging that cowardice and lack of leadership were the banes of DoSE, RPP accused the adviser, commissioner & secretary, principal director and the UDA government of being very much aware of the ills plaguing DoSE and yet preferring to hide like the proverbial ostrich in the sand. Perhaps a mass agitation should wake up the ostrich, it added.

ANPSTA slams DoSE for violation of court order
DIMAPUR, JUN 30 (NPN): All Nagaland PreService Teachers’ Association (ANPSTA) has expressed dismay at the Directorate of School Education (DoSE) for failing to heed to its demands raised in its earlier representations regarding recruitment of trained teachers through open recruitment in a “spirit of fairness and transparency”. ANPSTA, in a statement, accused the authorities in the department of showing no concern towards its demands due to their lackadaisical attitude. Further, ANPSTA pointed out that time and again,
it had served representations calling for maintaining an equilibrium in the recruitment process of trained teachers. ANPSTA also claimed that its fight for justice had been heard by the High Court which awarded a verdict in its favour. However, it said that as DoSE did not comply with its order, the court was compelled to proceed with serving contempt notice on the department. ANPSTA said the department then came up with a cooked story that the court order would only cause a freeze on all fresh appointments, but surprisingly the (Cont’d on p-8)

Check-gates issue needs more discussion: Zhaleo Rio DIMAPUR: Sericulture, Excise and Minority Affairs adviser Zhaleo Rio said the importance of check-gates could not be ignored so long as Nagaland remained under the prohibition regime. Addressing a review meeting of Excise & Prohibition Department convened by him here on Thursday, he claimed that the check-gates had been instrumental in the seizure of a large quantity of quality cases that had given high visibility to the department regarding its presence and field activity. Rio felt that the issue of check-gates needed to be further deliberated and taken up with the authority concerned. At the same time, he stressed enforcement of the existing Acts and laws regardless of the situations and circumstances. According to him, the flow of liquor into the State could be curbed to a great extent by exploring the best possible ways by optimally using available resources of the department. He also assured the department of every help and support from him in this regard. Held to discuss matters relating to the closure of excise check-gates, fieldrelated activities and service matters, the meeting was
chaired by excise & prohibition commissioner H Atokhe Aye and attended by excise & prohibition secretary Kevekha Kevin Zehol, deputy commissioner of excise (headquarters) S Chanlei Angh, superintendent of excise (narcotics cell) T Arilong Longkumer, assistant commissioner of excise (administration) S Phyobemo Kikon and other officials of the department. Sikkim govt bans use of glue traps for rodent control
G A N G TO K , J U N 3 0 (IANS): The Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services (AH & VS) Department of the Sikkim government asked the District Collector (DC) of Gangtok to ensure strict enforcement of the state’s 2016 notification prohibiting the manufacture, sale, and use of glue traps for rodent control, officials said on Thursday. AH & VS Department Secretary P. Senthil Kumar in his letter to the DC said the glue traps, also known as glue boards or sticky types, are a type of nonlethal, extremely sticky with non-dying adhesive currently available in the market for control of rodent population and found to be widely used in grocery shops, restaurants. It is evident that such a method is not only cruel and barbaric but also contrary to the existing Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960. Therefore, AH & VS Department as per the direction of Animal Welfare Board of India, has issued the notification for strict implementation and the Department is making all efforts to implement this ban. Still these traps are found to be sold in the open market, hence, it would be appreciated if necessary steps are taken to curb the use and ban all such types of traps, Kumar told the DC.
People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) India said that following its appeal, the Sikkim government took the action. “The manufacturers and sellers of glue traps sentence small animals to hideously slow and painful deaths and can turn buyers into lawbreakers,” PETA India said in a statement on Thursday. It said: “PETA India commends Sikkim for taking steps to protect animals, no matter how small, and for setting an example for the entire country to follow.”
The driver of the Van was identified Paominlal Misao (20) of T Tonglhang village in Moreh of Tengnoupal district, Lhunkhopao Baite (33) of H Wanomjang village of Tengnoupal district and Lamkholhing (61) wife of Onkhongam of HT Gamnomphai village, of Tengnoupal district. Reacting to TMC’s general secretary, Abhishek Baner jee dubbing chief minister Conrad Sangma a “con-man,” the NPP said such statements are “against our own indigenous culture.” “What pains the rank and file of the NPP is the culture which Trinamool Congress wishes to bring to Meghalaya. The culture of abuse, hostility, mud-slinging and misinformation,”
the NPP statement said. Stating that Meghalaya’s election process has been largely free from violence, the NPP said, “Our state is not one where electioneering is full of violence and aggression — something not alien to the campaigning style of TMC as already demonstrated in many previous instances.” The NPP was referring to the large-scale violence reported during the West Bengal Assembly polls in which several people lost their lives. UDAIPUR/JAIPUR, JUN 30 (PTI): Thousands of people took out a march in Udaipur and shopkeepers downed shutters in Jaipur on Thursday, protesting over the recent murder of a tailor by men who said they were avenging an insult to Islam. Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot visited the tailor’s family and told reporters outside the house that he wanted to National Investigation Agency (NIA) to file the charge sheet in a fast-track court as soon as possible, so that the culprits are brought to justice. Kanhaiya Lal was killed Tuesday afternoon by two cleaver-wielding men, who posted a grisly video of
the crime online claiming responsibility for the “beheading”. The tailor had earlier told local police that he had received threats over a social media post shared from his account, apparently “supporting” BJP leader Nupur Sharma’s provocative remarks on Prophet Mohammad. Curfew remained clamped in seven police station areas of Udaipur on Thursday. But police relaxed restrictions with the organisers -- the Sarv Hindu Samaj -- saying they wanted to hold a “silent march.” But, as they marched from the Town Hall to the Collectorate, some protest-
ers raised slogans like “Jai Jai Shri Ram”, “Madarse Band Karo” (close down madrassas), “Hinduon Ki Hatya Band Karo” (end murder of Hindus), and “Rajasthan Sarkar Neend Se Jago” (wake up, Rajasthan government). A large police force was deployed. A minor scuffle was reported during the rally, but police said it was peaceful. CM Gehlot spoke to the family members and relatives of Kanhaiya Lal at their home in Udaipur’s sector 14. He was accompanied by state Congress chief Govind Singh Dotasra, Revenue Minister Ramlal Jat and

The sources in the agency said that they received crucial input that both can be attacked by different organisations and hence they decided to produce them before Udaipur court. “There are many more involved in the incident. It was a larger conspiracy which was executed in a well planned manner. The people who are involved in this are yet to be caught. And we don’t

Vehemently opposing the scheme, Mann said this initiative was against the country’s youth. Lambasting the BJPled Centre for this “whimsical” move, the CM dared the BJP leaders to enroll their own sons as Agniveers before supporting this “anti-youth” move. He said that those who are advocating this move should set an example by sending their sons first in the Army under the scheme. “In this way, they will get a fresh young lot of Agniveers who will be saluting their leaders in their offices, after a service of four years,” Mann said. Calling it as an “il-

logical” move that will “jeopardize” the national security, besides damaging the basic spirit of the Indian Army, Mann advised the BJP leaders to stop building castles in air to support this move which is detrimental to the interests of the country. He said this scheme is against the ethos of love and passion of a youth for his country and the armed forces. Asking the BJP leaders to explain how the country will combat its infiltrators and enemies with an “Army on rent”, Mann cautioned them that this move will “prove fatal for the unity, integrity and sovereignty of the country in the coming times”. Citing examples of how the Indian Army has a glorious tradition of taking care of the families of the martyred soldiers, Mann
also asked the BJP leaders to explain that if any soldier, enrolled under the scheme, attains martyrdom during call of duty then who will take care of their families as there is no such provision in it. Mann claimed that under this scheme, a soldier will not get the status of a martyr. While opposing the resolution, BJP MLA Ashwani Sharma said that there should be no politics over the issue related to security of the country and also underscored the need for understanding this scheme. He said this scheme was aimed at instilling discipline and patriotism among the youth. Leader of Opposition and Congress legislator Partap Singh Bajwa demanded that the Agnipath scheme should be withdrawn.

The source said that both had been keeping an eye on the accused for a long time. Ghaus, in 2014 went to Karachi where he came in contact with the Dawat-e-Islami organization. Since then he was in touch with them. Both the accused after hacking Kanhaiya Lal to death recorded the video saying they were taking revenge on insult to Islam. Later they posted the video on social media. In the viral video, one of the two accused could be heard saying, “I will make the video viral when I accomplish my goal to teach a lesson to the accused who has shown disrespect to our God.”
Monsoon brings season’s 1st heavy rain spell in Delhi
NEW DELHI, JUN 30 (PTI): The monsoon reached Delhi on Thursday yielding the season’s first spell of heavy rain which provided respite from the oppressive heat and covered the precipitation deficit but brought vehicular traffic in the capital to a screeching halt. Most parts of the capital reported moderate to heavy rainfall. The Safdarjung observatory, Delhi’s base station, recorded 110 mm of rainfall in just six hours starting at 8:30 am, which is also the maximum on a day in June in at least 14 years. The capital had gauged 235.5mm of rainfall on June 18, 1936, which is an alltime record. On an average, Delhi logs 65.5 mm of rainfall in the month of June. The weather station at Lodhi Road gauged 102.2mm of precipitation during this period. Ridge got 62.4mm, Palam 31.4mm and Ayanagar 48.3 mm of rainfall. Rainfall recorded below 15 mm is considered light, between 15 and 64.5 mm is moderate, between 64.5 mm and 115.5 mm is

heavy, between 115.6 and 204.4 is very heavy. Anything above 204.4 mm is considered extremely heavy rainfall. The India Meteorological Department said the southwest monsoon further advanced into Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmiri, some parts of Punjab, Haryana and Rajasthan on June 30. “The northern limit of monsoon now passes through Deesa, Ratlam, To n k , S i k a r, Ro h t a k , Pathankot,” it said. The southwest monsoon usually arrives in the national capital on June 27 and covers the entire country by July 8. The showers, however, brought the familiar sight of snaking
lines of vehicles stuck on waterlogged roads for interminable minutes. Many commuters reported late for office and several people posted their plight through videos and photographs on social media, some seeking help from police. The IMD has issued an orange alert, warning of heavy rainfall in some areas in the city on Thursday and moderate rainfall on Friday. The maximum temperature will come down to 34-35 degrees Celsius. Last year, the IMD had forecast that the monsoon would arrive in Delhi nearly two weeks before its usual date. However, it reached the capital only on July 13, making it the most delayed in 19 years.
Prez poll: Murmu, Sinha in fray after scrutiny of papers NEW DELHI, JUN 30 (PTI): NDA nominee Droupadi Murmu and her challenger Yashwant Sinha were the only two candidates left in the fray for the July 18 presidential election after scrutiny of nomination papers, Rajya Sabha Secretary General P C Mody said on Thursday. Mody, the returning officer for the presidential election, said 115 nomination papers of 94 persons were received till Wednes-
day, of which 107 were rejected for not meeting the required criteria. The nomination papers of Murmu and Sinha – four sets each – were found to fulfil all the requirements of a valid nomination and were accepted, he said. Mody said the list of contesting candidates will be published in the gazette on July 2 after 3 pm, which is the last date for withdrawal of nomination.

Adding fuel to the fire
A
s India continues to be confronted by the dangers of religious polarisation and too little being done to prevent the spread of communal hatred, the beheading on June 28 of a tailor in Udaipur, Rajasthan by two terrorists, has only given a handle to forces inimical to communal harmony. Those involved in the June 28 incident at Udaipur belong to two communities. Kanhaiya Lal age 48 was from the Hindu community and the two accused persons Ghouse Mohammad and Riyaz Akhtari are from the Muslim community. According to reports, the victim had reportedly shared a video post supporting the controversial remarks by Nupur Sharma, now suspended BJP spokesperson against Islam’s founder and prophet Mohammad. According to other reports, the video was posted from Kanhaiya Lal’s mobile but it was learnt that the victim was ignorant about video posting but that it was actually done by one of his family members. After the video was posted, family members said the victim was arrested by police on charges of inciting communal hatred. A video was then posted by the two accused who threatened to kill Kanhaiya Lal for the video post. The victim complained to police on June 15, but the police, instead of taking action against the two, acted like peacemakers and reportedly helped to bring a compromise. Kanhaiya Lal did not open his shop for six days fearing for his life. However, when he reopened his shop on Tuesday, the two terrorists went into the shop in the pretext of stitching their clothes. When Kanhaiya Lal began measuring, suddenly one of them(identified as Riyaz Akhtari); attacked the victim with a giant cleaver and beheaded him. The other (identified as Ghouse Mohammad) filmed the entire murder in gory detail. After the horrific beheading, the two attempted to flee but were intercepted by police. According to police, Ghouse Mohammad had been Pakistan for some kind of indoctrination with the Karachi-headquartered missionary group Dawat-e-Islami. The group has been involved with a series of murders. The beheading was gory and most chilling and the act of the two terrorists will only serve to justify communal violence against Muslims in India. The Udaipur killing is the by product of radical Islam of which the entire world has experienced. Anyone, including a Muslim, can attract fatwa and be targeted for blasphemy. The chilling manner in which Kanhaiya Lal was beheaded and then after the dastardly deed, the two terrorists lording over their act by posting a video is beyond tolerance. A religion that claims as being one of the most peaceful, seems to have no answer to the most violent and brutal forms of reprisals carried out as fatwa or jihad. The Shahi Imam of Jama Masjid in Delhi condemned the killing and called it an act of cowardice. The Imam also said that the heinous murder was an act against Islam and that Islam was the religion of peace and tranquillity. Islamic organizations and Masjid Imams also said that the murder was a huge hammer on humanity. These lines have been echoed by other Muslim leaders. However none of the Muslim religious organisations or well known leaders like Assad uddin Owaisi questioned the existence or practice of the medieval edicts such as fatwa and jihad, which are used to promote terrorism globally in the name of the religion.
DailyDevotion Do It Now!
Agree with your adversary quickly… —Matthew 5:25
In this verse, Jesus Christ laid down a very important principle by saying, “Do what you know you must do— now. Do it quickly. If you don’t, an inevitable process will begin to work ‘till you have paid the last penny’ (Matthew 5:26) in pain, agony, and distress.” God’s laws are unchangeable and there is no escape from them. The teachings of Jesus always penetrate right to the heart of our being. Wanting to make sure that my adversary gives me all my rights is a natural thing. But Jesus says that it is a matter of inescapable and eternal importance to me that I pay my adversary what I owe him. From our Lord’s standpoint it doesn’t matter whether I am cheated or not, but what does matter is that I don’t cheat someone else. Am I insisting on having my own rights, or am I paying what I owe from Jesus Christ’s standpoint? Do it quickly— bring yourself to judgment now. In moral and spiritual matters, you must act immediately. If you don’t, the inevitable, relentless process will begin to work. God is determined to have His child as pure, clean, and white as driven snow, and as long as there is disobedience in any point of His teaching, He will allow His Spirit to use whatever process it may take to bring us to obedience. The fact that we insist on proving that we are right is almost always a clear indication that we have some point of disobedience. No wonder the Spirit of God so strongly urges us to stay steadfastly in the light! (see John 3:19-21). “Agree with your adversary quickly….” Have you suddenly reached a certain place in your relationship with someone, only to find that you have anger in your heart? Confess it quickly— make it right before God. Be reconciled to that person— do it now!

Post-mortem
Embracing the Future: NBCC Youth Sunday
D
ear Baptist Youth Leaders and Young People of Nagaland! Greetings from the Office of NBCC Youth Department (NBCCYD). As different churches under NBCC observes NBCC Youth Prayer & Fasting & Youth Sunday on 2nd & 3rd July, 2022 on account of NBCC Youth Day, this is our prayer that we will all have a meaningful and blessed time of fellowship. The Nagaland Baptist Church Council Youth Department (NBCCYD) has entered a momentous 50th years of its existence and our focused was towards the spiritual well-being of the young people in Nagaland all these glorious years. Like any organization, it is not easy to begin anew, likewise, the genesis of NBCCYD was no different from the rest; yet, NBCCYD has endured every challenge on its way and have resoundingly led from the front. In these 50 years, NBCCYD has undertaken many forms of ministries according to the
M
need and relevance of the time. Today NBCCYD has progressed along with the change of time and is constantly working toward embracing new forms of strategic ministries. One such strategic ministry is the student’s ministry which seeks to cater the need of the students in towns and cities with the aim to inculcate Christian values and principles. Until Covid situation NBCCYD is actively involved in organizing different seminars and training on leadership skills to equip young leaders on a state level in collaboration with national and International resource persons. Sports ministry is another key strategic ministry of the Department. In collaboration with various sports organizations incorporating evangelism, discipleship and leadership NBCCYD motif in reaching out to young people through sports has been successful. Prayer has always been the unseen strength of Christian life and ministry. Since July 4, 1984 with the observance
obile and internet with all its utility and usefulness is also doing a lot of harm especially to our children but we can’t prohibit its usage or sale. The only reasonable and matured way to the problem is advising the children to use the technology responsibly with a sense of self-esteem. Drug is the other word for life saving medicine but unfortunately we have abusers of them called, drug edicts. Will it be wise to prohibit the manufacture and sale of drugs because some miscreants abuse it? Coming to the issue of liquor prohibition, I must say that the idea of our society without alcohol is good but the problem is just because the idea is good does not mean it is practical. The reason behind the impracticality of the idea of a dry State is firstly due to the fact that intake of liquor or wine is a personal choice or habit and secondly Nagaland is not a territory in the sky but surrounded by fellow neighboring States who produce liquor. It may be noted here that prohibition in the other three States of Bihar, Gujarat and Mizoram are all failures with varying Celsius. The only
of NBCC Youth Day of prayer the Department has been organizing YOUTH SUNDAY with the purpose of bringing young people together to pray for NBCC Ministry and get involved in Sunday Morning Worship, celebrating the youth ministry. NBCCYD has also never been silent on the social issues. With the aim to build a harmonious society and peaceful Christian home in the state of Nagaland, NBCCYD has been and is a big supporter of NLTP enactment and the movement of clean election. NBCCYD as it embraces the future cannot help but see that if at all we need to have a maximum impact upon our young people it has to be through good Scripture engagement. In other words the Word of God matters if at all we want to positively impact the younger generation. Youth Ministry beyond the four walls of the church is also becoming a pressing need in our context today. The significant ministries of
Jesus recorded in the Bible are mostly beyond the walls of the churches and not confined to synagogues and temples alone. The healings, teachings, preaching and miracles of Jesus’ ministry came in a place where people would least expect the Messiah to be. The narrative recorded in John’s gospel between Jesus and the Samaritan woman in the ancient Jacob’s well reflects the intention of Jesus the Messiah. The Samaritan women here represents those rejected, the Pregnant teen excommunicated by the community, the alcoholics avoided by many, the addicts, the young people outside the church. Colleges are the places where we have plentiful harvest which are left unattended and we see the need to focus on impacting these young enthusiast minds with sound Biblical teachings, these are intellectuals’ minds, and we need good teachers of the Bible to come together to reach out to these untapped individuals.
At present, the mushrooming of independent churches are able to draw the attention of young people and making an impact in our society, not saying that the mainline churches are failing but we have been running an old traditional way of Church Service for the youths since its inception. This does not mean to say that we will do away with the traditional setups to minister effectively to certain group of young people but we can unlearn and enhance our ministry skills as the future of ministry belongs to those who can penetrate. Rethinking our strategy is the NEED of the hour, the NBCCYD makes a commitment that we will work with our People especially the Youth to rethink, rework, re-strategize and fasten up in this fast-Paced world and move forward to reaching out to our young generation in discipleship, equipping and nurturing for transforming Lives. N. Suhuto Chishi Youth Secretary, NBCC
Lift NLTPA 1989 for mockery on us success story from these three states is growth of Liquor Mafias with loss of lives from spurious liquor especially Bihar. Nagas, like any culture in the world, had the culture of using intoxicants but unfortunately, recent generation turned it into an abusive substance giving rise to various alcohol related problems in the society. However, this does not imply that since few individuals abuse liquor we decide to prohibit. It is nobody’s prerogative or right, in the first place, to prevent or prohibit individuals as to what to eat or drink, except offer an advice. No doubt, Nagaland, as a State, has the power to ban the manufacture and sale of liquor within its territory but Nagaland Government doesn’t have the authority to ban individual’s drinking or eating habit nor does it have the authority to stop a neighboring State from producing liquor or selling it. Coupled with this, individuals have the liberty to buy their alcohol from anywhere they want. An autonomous church, with all its authority may ban or prohibit usage of liquor by its congregation and soon that church will be left with only the
pastor and a handful of self righteous members.Nagaland Liquor Prohibition is irrational because it is untenable. Hence, the right and matured approach that the Government, as a law keeper and the churches, as moral keepers can do is to come up with stringent rules and regulations on the issue like the quality of the product, usage of alcohol and behavioral code for drinkers and also a slew of punitive actions against those individuals who drink and create nuisance and ruckus in their drunkenness resulting in social discord and family peace. This is the only matured and practical way to deal with an issue such as Alcohol and not otherwise. The society, especially the churches, must realize that the only logical approach to the issue of alcohol, as we witness in its existence all these years of prohibition, is not prohibition but helping alcoholics change their bad habits by organizing various programmes and seminars for healthy and responsible living. The other social truth is that any consumable commodity whether indigenous or imported when prohibited automatically goes underground making it
more lucrative than any other commodity in the open market. The saying, “stolen sweets are sweeter” affirms the truth. The prohibition Act that is in effect in the State is not a wise act because it resulted from an emotional approach rather than relying on reason as to how far it is practical and when in effect what will be its consequences? The result of our immature approach to the issue is that the moment liquor was prohibited it not only went underground but created thousands of ‘businessmen and businesswomen’bootleggers; in other words thousands more anti-socials in the eye of law and thousands more sinners in the eye of NBCC and the churches. In addition, as expected, Nagaland is now flooded with more liquor and more outlets than ever before when sale of liquor was legal and available in few licensed liquor shops. Outrageously, the overall achievement of Prohibition Act in the State is that it succeeded in making us all hypocrites in the eyes of our visitors. Let us stop being Pharisees in the eye of others and among ourselves. Put an end to this unrealistic prohibition Act and put on
Forest Festival “The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The second best time is now.” ~Chinese Proverb
V
We have almost 100 colleges in Nagaland and the need to reach out to the colleges is more than ever. To prepare for tomorrow, we must do what the apostles did: take church to the streets, concert venues, coffee houses, breweries, or wherever our young people are. The best platform for transformation of the young minds is the Church. But as we could notice, the percentage of young people attending the church worship is declining, and it’s time for youth ministry to reach out beyond the conventional set up. The tremendous efforts of our past leaders are applauded and their stories will continue to inspire leaders and young people in the coming days too. However, with the passage of time, the challenges and problems have only become even more, and there’s a constant demand to rethink and strategize on how we can become more effective and impactful in reaching out to young people.
an Mahotsav or Forest Festival is an annual tree-planting festival celebrated from 1 July to 7 July to spread awareness of forest conservation and to save the environment. Van Mahotsav was started back in the year 1950 by K.M. Munshi, who, back then, was a Union Minister for Agriculture and Food. Trees and forests play a very crucial role in maintaining an ecological balance and providing oxygen to human beings on the planet. The Van Mahotsav week is a reminder that we must protect forests and stop deforestation and practice the 3R rule- Reduce, reuse and recycle. With the onset of the monsoon, tens and thousands of saplings are planted all across India and the festival literally is the celebration and creation of new life. During this week, one can find children and elders planting saplings and taking part in the plantation drive to raise awareness about the importance of trees. The main aim of this Mahotsav is to create enthusiasm and awareness amongst the masses. During this festival, each and every citizen of India is expected to plant a sapling during the entire Van Mahotsav week and pass it on to the next generation. It is the festival of life. As a part of Van Mahotsav celebrations throughout the country, afforestation drives are launched in a bid to retain the vanishing forest covers of the country. Humans with their greedy needs have cut down a large part of the forest cover. In the name
of urbanization and globalization of cities, trees were considered as the major stumbling block. They came in the way of flyovers, roads, hoardings and pavements and hence the easiest solution was to get rid of them altogether. This declining number of trees has brought a major change in climate too. So there is a dire necessity of festivals such as Van Mahotsav, to restore the forest cover in the country. The dwindling number of rainy days and increase in the intensity of precipitation events raises serious question on the increasing developmental activities taking place at the cost of cutting a large number of trees. India has long been vulnerable to floods, droughts, heat waves, cyclones, and other natural disasters and this trend is increasing with each day. With continuous human intervention against Nature, these disasters can no longer be considered ‘Natural’. An immediate example that comes to our mind is that colossal event that has occurred recently in Northeast floods in Assam, Meghalaya and other states remained extremely critical. To further highlight the importance of trees, we can take the example of dense mangrove forests growing along the coastal areas of our country, which helped in reducing the devastating effects of the Tsunami in 2004. They absorbed the oncoming waves and protected a large number of human habitation. The Van Mahotsav festival of trees is a beautiful initiative to save the environment, to which we owe a
lot. Generally, native trees are planted as they readily adapted to the local conditions, integrate into eco-systems and have a high survival rate. Besides, such trees are helpful in supporting local birds, insects a n d animals as well. How can we celebrate Van Mahotsav? The government organizes various plantation drives at various levels to encourage people to plant trees. We can also do our part. -Van Mahotsav can be celebrated by planting more and more trees every day and by telling more and more people to do the same. -One can stop buying products that are produced or made by destroying forests and avoid using them. -Plant trees at your homes, schools, offices and colleges and take part in various awareness campaigns. Initiatives like the free circulation of trees can also be taken up by various volunteers and organisations. -Workshops can be conducted in schools to teach children about the need for planting trees and how it helps in preventing global warming and reducing pollution. -We can also practice the 3R rule and lower the need for raw materials from trees and forests. Let us join hands and save mother earth by doing this small contribution. Research, Demonstration & Training Centre Sechü Zubza, Kohima (Soil & Water Conservation Department) Reader’s note: Articles or letters published in any of the columns do not reflect the view of this
the armor of maturity, discipline and self respect. The notions of prohibition and inhibitions on issues such as drugs, alcohol etc often come from shallow, ill educated minds and hence the need to continuously educate our minds to be reasonable in our effort to deal with societal challenges. The paramount confronts of the hour is to concentrate our ability and spiritual strength on pressing needs of the society like helping our Government in the judicious use of developmental funds, fighting against corruption and dishonesty and reforming our moral houses. Today, every reasonable citizen, drinkers and non-drinkers alike in Nagaland, are in favor of immediately doing away with this prohibition Act because it is doing more harm, a blatant mockery of our image, than good. And the question before us is, aren’t we matured and intelligent enough to wrestle with the problem of alcohol in the open social arena or are we cowards hiding foolishly and self righteously behind a hypocritical law such as Nagaland Liquor total Prohibition Act 1989? Future is in the hands of youths
T
he youths are an important asset, more than any other age groups as they determine the future of our society. It is believed that developing countries with large youth population could see tremendous growth, provided they invest in young people’s education, health and protect and guarantee their rights. Being a democratic nation and largest democracy in the world, India is still lagging behind in achieving socio-political and economic equalities, which were dreamt by our predecessors. The pivotal role of youth who are afresh with ideas and not ideals, will help in stirring a positive movement towards a transparent civil society structure which can influence the political administration for the benefit of the society. It is only through a strong system of representation that democracy work and it is only through a strong youth representation that the dynamism and vigour of a country be maintained. The youths are problem solvers, have a positive influence on other young people and the nation, and are extremely ambitious. They have the ability to create an identity for themselves and move the nation newspaper nor that of the
forward. However, they will not be able to do this without the support of family, community, Government and fellow youths. Then the youth can make their beautiful land flourish and shine in success. There are so many reasons why many Indian youths are not looking at this country as their own and are looking for their home in other countries. First, it’s the quality of education, and then comes power politics, not many sectors to broaden their careers, etc. The biggest contributor to empower the youth’s success is its education. Most of them manage to navigate through a tough and complex education system, but many young people are excluded from completing their education. There is a need for early reading and supporting the development of the role of youth. Those who are already in the education system must see what support can be provided to them. We should ensure that young people are supported to stay in schools and what skills they need to navigate the complex system. If the youths hold the future, parenting has become important now more than ever. Anung Jamir Bangalore

BJP has unethically captured yet another govt: Jairam Ramesh
NEW DELHI, JUN 30 (IANS): The Congress has mounted attack on the BJP over formation of a government in Maharashtra. Party General Secretary Jairam Ramesh said that the BJP has captured another government with naked display of money and muscle power. “The BJP has undemocratically and unethically captured yet another state government. Under the Modi-Shah duo, the BJP wants to capture power at any cost, either directly or through remote control. What happened in Maharashtra is shameful for Indian democracy,” he said. Ramesh said that since 2014, the prime focus of the BJP has been to bring down elected governments in states rather than

Buying MLAs have become commonplace that the Finance Minister blurted out the truth when she suggested imposition of GST on horse-trading,” he added referring to her gaffe while mentioning items to be brought under GST. Ramesh alleged that
the BJP can go to any extent to win elections - from misuse of money power to polarization and violence. Despite using all these tactics, if the voters reject them, then they start hatching conspiracies to topple elected governments. He said that in the year 2016, the BJP brought down the Congress government in Uttarakhand in a similar way. The government elected for 5 years was reduced to a minority in four years by engineering defections. The same year, in Arunachal Pradesh, 43 out of 44 Congress MLAs were made to defect to the BJPbacked Front -- People’s Party of Arunachal, under the leadership of Chief Minister Pema Khandu.

NEW DELHI, JUN 30 (PTI): The Indian Air Force (IAF) has received 2.72 lakh applications under the Agnipath recruitment scheme within a week of launch of the registration process, the defence ministry said on Thursday. The registration process that began on June 24 had seen filing of 94,281 applications by Monday. After the scheme was unveiled on June 14, violent protests against it rocked several states for nearly a week, and various opposition parties demanded its rollback. However, in one State after another, the attitude of Governors towards the elected governments is against the Constitution. “That is true, even unfortunately of the Governor of this State (Tamil Nadu).” “Me agreeing to contest the Presidential election is ‘a continuous struggle’ against the excesses of the Central government and the BJP that runs it. CHENNAI, JUN 30 (PTI): Yashwant Sinha, the Opposition nominee for the next month’s Presidential election, on Thursday alleged here that any State government which believes in the Constitution and secularism and does not believe in Hindutva is not safe in the country. Addressing a meeting of DMK and its allies which extended support to him at the Dravidian party office here, Sinha said ‘another’ State government has collapsed and it is now in Maharashtra. The BJP is going to support a rebel faction of the Shiv Sena and the BJP leader has not become the Chief Minister. ‘Because, he knows this government is not going to last.’ Hence ‘they’ (BJP) have found a scapegoat to occupy the ‘exalted chair’ of the Chief Minister of Maharashtra, Sinha said. “But, what does this show? This shows that the

by InSpace, Somanath, also Secretary, Department of Space, said. Mission Director SR Biju described the launch as “wonderful” and said the launch vehicle injected the three “precious” satellites in the desired orbit. He also said PSLV was in a different configuration this time, the core alone version, “and we are coming back with this variant after a pretty long time.” “We had to introduce some changes to improve the productionisation of PSLV so that we can meet the growing demand of customers and all those changes which we have implemented have yielded results,” he said. The idea for this mission was conceptualised in a record time of three months and “it is effectively two missions rolled into one mission,” he added. D Radhakrishnan, CMD, NSIL, said their association with Singapore customer has been quite long.

SRIHARIKOTA (AP), JUN 30 (PTI): In its second successful commercial mission in a week, ISRO launched three foreign satellites in precise orbit from the spaceport here on Thursday onboard PSLV C53, with the space agency’s trusted launch vehicle once again living up to its reputation of being a reliable rocket. PSLV-C53 is the second dedicated commercial mission of NewSpace India Limited (NSIL), the commercial arm of ISRO which had on June 23 launched GSAT-24 in its first “demand-driven” communication satellite mission post space sector reforms, leasing the entire capacity on board to Direct-to-Home (DTH) service provider Tata Play. On Thursday, the fourstage, 44.4 metre tall PSLV-

After the primary mission, the PSLV 4th stage is going to “write some poems in orbit,” he said, referring to the PSLV Orbital Experimental Module (POEM). POEM is going to be functional after this, taking over the control of the primary mission computer to another one and the fourth stage will be powered, generating power on board and will be stabilised with altitude control and host some experiments by some of young startups enabled

However, the rupee rebounded from its all-time low to close 5 paise higher at 78.98 (provisional) against the US dollar on Thursday. NEW DELHI, JUN 30 (PTI): Amid the rupee declining against the US dollar, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Thursday said the Indian currency is relatively better placed than other global currencies against the greenback. Emerging market currencies have been falling against the dollar amid geopolitical tensions in the wake of the Russia-Ukraine war, concerns over growth, high global crude prices, sustained inflation and central banks worldwide adopting hawkish monetary policy approach. “We are relatively better placed. We are not a closed economy. We are part of the globalised world. So, we will be impacted (by global developments),” the finance minister said on the

In recent weeks, cryptocurrencies, which are not back by any underlying value, have witnessed massive volatility amid global uncertainties. RBI first come out with a circular regarding cryptocurrencies in 2018 and had barred entities regulated by it from dealing in such instruments. While regulatory clarity is yet to emerge with respect to the cryptocurrency space in the country, the government is working to finalise a consultation
overall resilience of Indian financial institutions, which should stand the economy in good stead as it strengthens its prospects. This reflects a combination of good governance and risk management practices, he said. According to him, the stress test results presented in the FSR demonstrate that banks are well positioned to withstand even severe stress scenarios without falling below the minimum capital requirement. He also said that the corporate sector is deleveraged with stronger bottom lines and the external sector is well-buffered to withstand the ongoing terms of trade shocks and portfolio outflows. “In a dynamic environment with considerable uncertainty, we have been proactive and nimble footed in our policy responses. We have been calibrating our actions to the need of the hour and striving to preserve macroeconomic and financial stability to ensure sustainable and inclusive growth,” he said.

Regarding the economy, he said it is skewed towards global spillovers and geopolitical tensions. The Indian financial system exhibits underlying robustness and resilience to withstand these shocks. “Our endeavour is to face all challenges, external and internal, with strength and innovative solutions for the Indian financial system,” he added. He however alleged that the UDA government had not done justice. Barring meetings held with senior central leaders in Delhi, he said the State government has failed to meet prominent political parties and leading political figures and stalwarts of the country all of whom could play pivotal roles in helping to resolve the Naga issue. unprecedented and chaotic legal situation on the West Bank. Israel set up Israeli legal status for settlers in the West Bank, while creating separate legal treatment for Palestinians living in the same locations, through emergency regulations that were put in place in 1967 and must be renewed every five years. The current regulations were to expire Thursday at midnight and in one of the events that precipitated the coalition’s demise, the government was unable to muster support to pass the renewal against an opposition determined to block even laws it ideologically
supports in order to bring about the government’s end. Israel’s Knesset voted to disband itself on Thursday morning, sending the country reeling toward its fifth election since 2019. The last general election was held in March 2021. Parliament voted to disperse 92–0, setting the next round of elections on November 1. The coalition agreement paves the way for Foreign Minister and Alternate Prime Minister Yair Lapid, 58, to formally succeed as Prime Minister at midnight when Naftali Bennett, 50, assumes the role of an Alternate Prime Minister. After the vote, Bennett
and Lapid embraced and switched places. A l ow - k e y f o r m a l handover ceremony from Bennett to Lapid was set for Thursday afternoon. Lapid will serve as caretaker prime minister until the next government is formed. It was the first time in Israel’s history that an Arab party was a part of the governing coalition and to its credit not the reason for its downfall despite periodic sharp ideological differences. Opinion polls showed support for the Netanyahu bloc swelling to 58-60, up from 52, but still falling short of the magical number of 61 required for a simple majority in the 120-member house. The current political alliances may also see a shift with several parties polling close to the threshold 3.25 per cent required to get Knesset representation. In a fiery address before the dispersal vote, Netanyahu predicted that he and his allies would return to power, “restore national pride” and “get Israel back on track to success, after what he called the “failed experiment” of the Bennett-led government.
Blackout fears in Tokyo amid heatwave TOKYO, JUN 30 (IANS): Ongoing concerns over a blackout in Tokyo were further raised on Thursday as a thermal power plant in northeast Japan was taken offline due to a technical glitch, as the mercury in the heatwave-hit capital soared to levels not seen in June in almost 150 years. The operator of the Nakoso coal- and oil-fired power plant in Fukushima prefecture, Joban Joint Power Co., said at around 3 a.m., the plant’s No. 9 unit was shut down after a ventilator was found to be vibrating, reports Xinhua news agency. The plants operator said it aims to bring the plant back online and will restart supplying power to its service area, which covers a sizable expanse of eastern Japan including Tokyo, by Thursday evening. The Industry ministry said there was no imminent risk of a blackout even as demand for power in Tokyo surged as temperatures hit 36.4 degrees Celsius, the highest on record for June since 1875 when record-keeping began.
Sri Lanka needs to do more on debt restructuring, says IMF
C O LO M B O, J U N 3 0 (PTI): The IMF on Thursday said it has concluded “constructive and productive” discussions with Sri Lankan authorities, but warned that the crisis-ridden island nation needs to do more on debt restructuring and step up structural reforms to address corruption vulnerabilities before a bailout package is finalised. Sri Lanka is going through the worst economic crisis since its independence from Britain in 1948, and needs to obtain at least USD 4 billion to tide over the acute shortage in foreign exchange reserves. “The Inter national Monetary Fund (IMF) team had constructive and productive discussions with the authorities on economic policies and reforms to be supported by an Extended Fund Facility arrangement,” the IMF said in a statement. “The discussions will continue virtually with a view to reaching a staff-level agreement on the Extended Fund Facility arrangement in the near term,” it added. MADRID, JUN 30 (AP): NATO faced rebukes from Moscow and Beijing on Thursday after it declared Russia a “direct threat” and said China posed “serious challenges ” to global stability. During a summit in Madrid, the Western military alliance described a world plunged into a dangerous phase of big-power competition and facing myriad threats, from cyberattacks to climate change. NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg said as the summit wrapped up Thursday that member nations agreed on a “fundamental shift in our deterrence and defence”
and sent Moscow a clear message that the alliance had a firm line drawn on its eastern frontier. “We live in a more dangerous world and we live in a more unpredictable world, and we live in a world where we have a hot war going on in Europe,” Stoltenberg said. “At the same time, we also know that this can get worse if this becomes a full scale war between Russia and NATO.” Stoltenberg continued: “We want to remove any room for miscalculation, misunderstanding in Moscow, about our readiness to protect every inch of NATO territory. That’s NA-
TO’s core responsibility.” Over their three days of talks in Spain, NATO leaders formally invited Finland and Sweden to join the alliance, after overcoming opposition from Turkey. If the Nordic nations’ accession is approved by the 30 member nations, it will give NATO a 1,300 kilometer border with Russia. Russian President Vladimir Putin warned he would respond in kind if the Nordic pair allowed NATO troops and military infrastructure onto their territory. He said Russia would have to “create the same threats for the territory from which threats against us are created”. Estonian Prime Minister Kaja Kallas said Putin’s threats were “nothing new”. “Of course, we have to expect some kind of surprises from Putin, but I doubt that he is attacking Sweden or Finland directly,” Kallas said as she arrived at the summit’s conference centre venue. “We will see cyberattacks definitely. We will see hybrid attacks, information war is going on. But not the conventional war.”
PRESS STATEMENT OF LOTHA FRONTAL ORGANISATION Lotha Hoho is the first guardian of its tribe and any authority it exerts over its jurisdiction is well intended for the welfare of its people and posterity. The recent print media publication of 11th June 2022 by the state government on the Lotha Baptist Churches Association (LBCA) issue in a letter to D.C Wokha, dated 10th June 2022 observing that “the steps taken by the Lotha Hoho and consequent action, if any, at this juncture could be construed as interference in the court proceedings and also considered as obstruction on the administration of justice, as the matter was subjudiced” need further clarification from the state government and asked to verify and validate whether Lotha Hoho or the LBCA is involved in any ongoing case in any court of law. Let the people decide as to whether the application of Article 371A and the 16 Point Agreement is valid or not. But the fact remains that being the apex Tribal body, anything that disturbs the mutual and peaceful co-existence of life under its jurisdiction, the Lotha Hoho has the right to interfere to settle any such issue and the classic instances of which was exhibited in the present issue of LBCA administration. Some vested interest group misconstrued the fact and moved through the district administration which is very unfortunate. It is also to be noted that there is no such organization called Lotha Public Organization (LPO) mandated by the public and therefore, any communique in the name of LPO is vehemently condemned. The infamous LPO led by Sulanthung Humtsoe has no moral right to Question the integrity and authority of the Lotha Hoho in exercising its obligations for the welfare of the people. The LH has withstood the test of time because it is well mandated by the will of the people. Repeated lies will not make a lie, right therefore, it is advised that meddling with something you are not a part of is an act of foolishness. It is also to remind every concerned citizen that the issue of LBCA has a long and deep rooted history of antagonism and polarization. The LH did what it could to remedy the issue though it could not please everyone. The frontal organizations once again reiterates to stand strong with the Lotha Hoho in any matter that concerns the safety and integrity of its people.

SEOUL, JUN 30 (AGENCIES): The nosedive in cryptocurrency markets has wiped out millions of dollars in funds stolen by North Korean hackers, four digital investigators say, threatening a key source of funding for the sanctions-stricken country and its weapons programmes. North Korea has poured resources into stealing cryptocurrencies in recent years, making it a potent hacking threat and leading to one of the largest cryptocurrency heists on record in March, in which almost $615 million was stolen, according to the U.S. Treasury. The sudden plunge in crypto values, which started in May amid a broader economic slowdown, complicates Pyongyang’s ability to cash in on that and other heists, and may affect how it plans to fund its weapons programmes, two South Korean government sources said. The sources declined to
be named because of the sensitivity of the matter. It comes as North Korea tests a record number of missiles - which the Korea Institute for Defense Analyses in Seoul estimates have cost as much as $620 million so far this year - and prepares to resume nuclear testing amid an economic crisis. Old, unlaundered North Korean crypto holdings monitored by the New Yorkbased blockchain analytics firm Chainalysis, which include funds stolen in 49 hacks from 2017 to 2021, have decreased in value from $170 million to $65 million since the beginning of the year, the company told Reuters. One of North Korea’s cryptocurrency caches from a 2021 heist, which had been worth tens of millions of dollars, has lost 80% to 85% of its value in the last few weeks and is now worth less than $10 million, said Nick Carlsen, an analyst with TRM Labs, another U.S.-based blockchain analysis firm.

ment for “adequate financing assurances from Sri Lanka’s creditors that debt sustainability will be restored,” it warned. The IMF team visited Colombo on June 20 to continue discussions on an economic programme that could be supported by an IMF lending arrangement, building on the progress made during the May 9-24 virtual mission. The objectives of the new IMF-supported programme would be to restore macroeconomic stability and debt sustainability, while protecting the poor and vulnerable, safeguarding financial stability, and stepping up structural re-
forms to address corruption vulnerabilities and unlocking Sri Lanka’s growth potential, it said. The IMF also warned that high fiscal deficit had to be reduced, as well as taming rising inflation. Since revenue was weak, far-reaching tax reforms were urgently needed to achieve these objectives, it added. On Monday, the Sri Lankan government announced that only essential services will operate from midnight till July 10 and all other operations will be temporarily suspended as the island nation of 22 million faces an acute fuel shortage.

Israeli parliament votes to dissolve JERUSALEM, JUN 30 (PTI): Israel’s experiment with the most diverse political alliance ranging from the Left, Centre and Right to even an Islamist Arab party finally came to an end on Thursday with the Knesset voting to disperse itself in an overwhelming 92-0 vote, clearing the way for fresh polls—the fifth in less than four years. The “anti-Netanyahu” glue (the resolve to keep former Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu away from power) that kept the diverse partners with sharp ideological differences together for a little more than a year finally gave in under the weight of its incompatibility. Uncomfortable members kept the government on its toes all through its stint and chose to go with “their conscience” finally making it untenable while the Netanyahu bloc remained loyal to him, blocking the government even on issues which otherwise gelled along with their ideology. The decision to dissolve the 120-member Knesset (Parliament) came right up to the wire, as Israel stood on the threshold of entering an

A
udition for Miss Dimapur 2022 organised by Ethnic Group of Nagaland (EGoN) has commenced on June 30 at Emporium Skill and Training Institute, Dimapur. Several aspiring pageants signed up for screening, where only 15 will be selected to move ahead to compete for the title. Miss Dimapur Beauty Pageant was organised under the heading of Young Friends Association in 1997-98, which was later renamed as Ethnic Group of Nagaland (EGoN), under the theme “Culture & Couture – Synchronising Faces Fashion & Feminism”. The theme depicts harmony of Indigenous and Mongolian features combined with traditional and modern wear while uniting for women empow-

timism of being awarded Miss India or Miss Universe from pageantry organised by EGoN. They further informed that Miss Dimapur 2019 and 2021, have represented the state in VLCC Femina
Miss India, further expressing hope that there would be more in the years to come. Though the beauty pageant could not be conducted in 2020 and 2021, they added that runners-up
of 2019, Lovi Awomi, was nominated as the Miss Dimapur 2021, and was now the reigning VLCC Femina Miss India Nagaland, 2022. It may be noted that Miss Dimapur 2019, Zuchobeni Tungoe, also represented the state for the VLCC Femina Miss India Nagaland 2020. Besides the pageant, EGoN informed that it had also brought forth two mega shows including 1st Northeast Supermodel Contest at NEZCC ground Dimapur in 2004 and 2nd Northeast Supermodel Contest at Northeast Agri Expo in 2011, along with dozens of other fashion extravaganza shows. It was later informed that the grand finale would be held on August 12, at IMC Hall, commemorating International Youth Day. (Staff Reporter)
How to relieve tired eyes Apply a Warm Washcloth
Try a washcloth soaked in warm water on your tired, achy eyes. Warm compresses can: Add moisture Ease pain Increase blood flow Relax muscle spasms Wash your hands before you start so bacteria doesn’t get in your eyes. Dip your washcloth in water that you’ve boiled (to sterilize it) and cooled until lukewarm. Then put it on your eyes for 5-10 minutes, or as long as your doctor advises.
Adjust Lights and Device Screens
Different tasks call for different types of light. While you watch TV, it’s easier on your eyes to keep the room softly lit. When you read, put the light where it’s behind you and pointed toward the page, out of your eyes. On digital screens, adjust the brightness to match the level of light around you. Also, adjust the screen’s contrast, so your eyes don’t have to strain to see.
Wear Computer Eyeglasses
With these prescription eyeglasses, your eyes can focus at computer screen distance. That’s about 20-26 inches from your face. Some have special lenses to help you quickly shift focus between close, middle, and far distances. Before you go shopping, understand that computer glasses are not the same as those that block blue light. Blue light-blocking specs may make you more comfortable, but they don’t always prevent eyestrain.
Palm Your Eyes
Eye experts link this technique to an alternative therapy called The Bates Method, named for eye doctor William Bates. He questioned whether glasses were the only way to fix a person’s vision. Research shows
his method doesn’t correct eyesight, but palming could help to ease eyestrain. Cup your palms over your closed eyes, putting no pressure on your eyeballs. The idea is that this can help to relax your eyes.
Try Tea Bags
Tea bags are good for more than a hot drink. They also work as a relaxing cold compress for your eyes. After you’ve brewed chamomile or regular tea, put the bags in a clean container in the fridge. Once they’ve cooled, put them on your eyelids to help soothe your eyes and reduce swelling. Make sure you’ve washed your face and hands well and taken out your contacts. And don’t get any tea in your eyes.
Do Eye Exercises
Your eyes have muscles, and they can benefit from a workout, too. Try this: Hold your finger a few inches from your eyes and focus on it. Then, focus far into the distance, then back on your finger. Repeat a few times. Or, close your eyes, roll them up toward the ceiling, then down toward the floor. Look to the right, then left. These exercises
knowledged during talks with Jefferson that “Flowers” sampled “Move Your Body,” but did not take a license. “West advocates for artists’ rights with one hand, yet has no shame in taking away rights from another artist with the other,” the lawsuit said. West released “Donda 2” in February exclusively through his Stem Player, a handheld device that allows users to isolate and recombine song parts. Kano Computing Ltd, a British company that developed the Stem Player with West and is also named in the lawsuit, did not immediately respond to a request
for comment. The lawsuit said “Flowers” is reportedly about West’s ex-wife Kim Kardashian, whose petition to end their marriage was approved in March. Texas pastor David Paul Moten sued West in May for allegedly sampling one of his sermons without permission. West has previously settled lawsuits over samples of a Hungarian singer on the 2013 song “New Slaves;” a child’s prayer on the 2016 song “Ultralight Beam;” and a theater work about activist Marcus Garvey on “Freeee (Ghost Town Pt. 2),” a 2018 collaboration with rapper Kid Cudi. Change Your Computer Setup
Small tweaks can make a big difference to your eyes. Make sure your screen is about arm’s length (20-26 inches) away from your face. The center of the screen should be slightly below eye level (4-5 inches). It helps to have a chair you can move up and down. Adjust the text size so you don’t squint. And try a document holder next to your monitor for printed papers. This limits how much you move your eyes back and forth.
R
apper, producer and entrepreneur Kanye West, who legally changed his name to Ye last year, was sued on Wednesday for allegedly sampling a song by musician Marshall Jefferson without permission. Ultra Inter national Music Publishing LLC said “Flowers” from West’s album “Donda 2” includes a sample from Jefferson’s 1986 dance song “Move Your Body” that is repeated at least 22 times. A representative for West did not immediately respond to a request for comment, nor did West’s label Universal Music Group (UMG.AS), which is not a party to the suit. An attorney for Ultra International, which owns the rights to Jefferson’s song, said the company had no comment and believes the lawsuit speaks for itself. Jefferson is a pioneer of house music from West’s hometown of Chicago. According to the lawsuit, West and his representatives ac-
may help ease eye fatigue. But they won’t actually make your eye muscles stronger.
Take Screen Breaks
Experts say that when you use a digital device, you should take regular screen breaks. They recommend the 20-20-20 rule. Take a 20-second break to look at something 20 feet away every 20 minutes. Another tip: for every 2 hours of screen time, rest your eyes for 15 minutes.
omedy drama “Jugjugg Jeeyo” has collected over Rs 50 crore in box office collections, the makers said on Thursday. Directed by Raj Mehta and backed by Dharma Productions, the family entertainer released in theatres on June 24. The official Instagram page of the production banner shared the latest box office figures of “Jugjugg Jeeyo” in a post. “This parivaar’s love continues to
bring families back to the big screen & serve entertainment with a solid punjaabbi touch!” read the post from Dharma Productions. On day six of its release, “Jugjugg Jeeyo” raised Rs 3.97 crores at the ticket window, taking its box office total to Rs 50.24 crore. In its opening week, the film had earned Rs 36.93 crore. “Jugjugg Jeeyo” stars Varun Dhawan, Anil Kapoor, Kiara Advani, Neetu Kapoor, Maniesh Paul and Prajakta Koli.
Improve Your Air Quality
When your eyes are dry, they feel more tired. Use a humidifier to add moisture to the air and your eyes. A humidity level of at least 45% is best. Also, adjust your thermostat or move away from vents so dry air doesn’t blow on your face. If you smoke, think hard about quitting.
Try Artificial or Real Tears
Over-the-counter or prescription eye drops relieve dry, tired eyes. Use them even when your eyes feel fine to keep them moisturized and stop your symptoms from coming back. Or, if you prefer to make natural tears, remember to blink more often, especially when you’re on a digital device. We usually blink 15 times in a minute. But when we’re on a computer, that drops to 5-7 times.

NEW DELHI, JUN 30 (PTI): A coach attached with the Indian Under-17 women’s football team has been suspended and called back from Norway for alleged “misconduct” with a minor player during the ongoing training tour to Europe. 1st Test: Australia in command over Sri Lanka on rain-hit Day 2
Australia’s Cameron Green celebrates scoring a half century during Day-2 of the first test match against Australia. (AP/PTI)
GALLE, JUN 30 (IANS): Usman Khawaja (71) and Cameron Green (77) scored half-centuries to put Australia in a commanding position against Sri Lanka on the rain-truncated second day of the first Test of the two-match series, at Galle International Stadium, here on Thursday. Australia were 313-8, leading Sri Lanka by 101 runs at stumps on Day 2 with Pat Cummins (26) and Nathan Lyon (8) unbeaten at the crease. The first session of play was washed out due to rain. The extremely windy conditions in Galle
further delayed proceedings as the players spent the first session of play on day two in the dressing room. It wasn’t until 1345 hrs local time that play was possible. Despite the pitch staying covered for most parts, there was huge spin on offer from the get-go. Travis Head’s decision to play against the spin backfired as Dhananjaya de Silva completed a brilliant return catch to dismiss the southpaw. Usman Khawaja’s dream run with the bat continued as he notched up yet another fifty. The spin and bounce on the surface con-
tinued to trouble the batters but Khawaja and Cameron Green found a way to keep the scoreboard ticking with occasional boundaries. Khawaja looked set for a big score before he became Jeffrey Vandersay’s first Test wicket. Once again, Sri Lanka showed great catching -- this time Pathum Nissanka completed a great catch close in at short leg. With the pitch doing all sorts of things, Alex Carey came out and decided to fight fire with fire. The wicketkeeper-batter took the attack to the bowlers and quickly knocked off the deficit to put Australia in the lead. Green and Carey took Australia safely to tea with a lead of 21 runs. Coming out to bat in the final session in the 40s, only one of them managed to score a half-century. Brief scores: Australia 313-8 (Cameron Green 77, Usman Khawaja 71; Ramesh Mendis 4-107) lead Sri Lanka 212 (Niroshan Dickwella 58, Angelo Mathews 39; Nathan Lyon 5-90, Mitchell Swepson 3-55) by 101 runs
Everton’s Richarlison set for Tottenham move
L O N D O N, J U N 3 0 (AGENCIES): Brazil international Richarlison is set for a medical at Tottenham after Spurs agreed a deal to sign the forward from Everton. The move will be worth more than £50m but there are some minor issues to be finalised over the exact fee. Personal terms have been agreed with Richarlison and, barring any unexpected issues, the transfer should be concluded on Thursday. Richarlison, 25, joined Everton from Watford for £50m in 2018.
Richarlison
Since then, he has scored 53 goals in 152 appearances for the Merseyside club, finishing top scorer at Everton last season as the club narrowly avoided relegation from the Premier League. Richarlison went into the campaign on
the back of an exhausting summer, when he played for Brazil in both Copa America and the Olympic Games, and scored 10 goals in the top flight. Six of those goals came in Everton’s last nine games of the season as they finished 16th and four points above the relegation zone. Tottenham have qualified for this season’s Champions League and have signed winger Ivan Perisic, keeper Fraser Forster and midfielder Yves Bissouma so far this summer. The accounting pe-
riod for Everton’s figures from the 2021-22 campaign ends on 30 June so, if the Richarlison deal is done, it would help balance the Toffees’ books after the club posted £372m in losses over the last three years. Having spent a total of about £30m on Demarai Gray, Vitaliy Mykolenko and Nathan Patterson last season, selling Richarlison for more than £50m would mean the club would make a healthy profit on player sales, although they have also acquired others on loan.

Bumrah to lead India in 5th Test against England
BIRMINGHAM, JUN 30 (IANS): India right-arm pacer Jasprit Bumrah on Thursday was named by the senior selection committee to lead India in the rescheduled fifth Test against England at Edgbaston, starting from Friday, said an official release by the BCCI. The release also said that wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant will serve as Bumrah’s deputy for the much-anticipated Test match. Bumrah becoming India’s captain for the Edgbaston Test comes after regular skipper Rohit Sharma tested positive for Covid-19 on the second day of the warm-up match against Leicestershire last week. He had scored 25 runs in the first innings of the match but didn’t come out to bat in the second innings after testing positive for Covid-19. But with Sharma still infected with Covid-19, it means that Bumrah, who was vice-captain when India last played Tests, against Sri Lanka at home in March, will be captaining the side at Edgbaston from Friday.

TUTICORIN, JUN 30 (IANS): Dylan Fernandes and Katya Saini emerged champions in men’s and women’s category respectively in the 3rd All India Kiteboarding Championships here on Thursday. L O N D O N, J U N 3 0 ( AG E N C I E S / I A N S ) : World number one Iga Swiatek struggled with unforced errors but found her composure when it mattered most to see off Dutch lucky loser Lesley Pattinama Kerkhove 6-4 4-6 6-3 to reach the third round at Wimbledon and extend her winning run to 37 matches. With Thursday’s victory, Swiatek went past Monica Seles and matched Martina Hingis’ run in the 1997 season. The all-time longest winning streak is held by Martina Navratilova, who had 74 successive victories in 1984. Pattinama Kerkhove lost in the final round of qualifying at the grasscourt Grand Slam but was granted a berth in the main draw when Danka Kovinic withdrew with injury. Playing against an opponent ranked in the top-10 for the first time in her career, the 30-year-old Dutchwoman came out swinging freely to put Swiatek under pressure on a sun-bathed Court One, as the Pole fell 4-2 behind. Swiatek slipped and fell awkwardly behind the baseline while trying to hit a return as the 138thranked Pattinama Kerkhove broke her serve a
second time. But once Swiatek found her feet and range, it was one-way traffic. The 21-year-old, who has won six consecutive titles including a second French Open trophy, won the next four games to take opening set. Pattinama Kerkhove, who reached the second round at Wimbledon last year for her best showing at the majors, would not give up though. She got the crucial break in the seventh game of the second set to level the match at 1-1. Swiatek next meets Frenchwoman Alize Cornet, who earlier beat American Claire Liu 6-3 6-3, for a chance to match her best performance at Wimbledon where she reached the fourth round in 2021.

LO N D O N, J U N 3 0 (IANS): Star wicketkeeper-batter Jos Buttler was on Thursday named as England’s new white-ball captain. LO N D O N, J U N 3 0 (IANS): Two-time champion Petra Kvitova and No. 4 seed Paula Badosa of Spain won their respective women’s singles secondround matches in contrasting styles as they set up a tantalising third-round clash in Wimbledon on Thursday. Czech Republic star Kvitova, who won the title in 2011 and 2014, had to quell a second set fightback by Ana Bogdan of Romania to win 6-1, 7-6(5) while Badosa enjoyed a relatively easier time in beating another Romanian Irina Bara 6-3, 6-2. Between 2010 and 2014, Kvitova did not lose before the quarterfinals at Wimbledon, since 2015, she has reached the last 32 only twice. On Thursday, it looked like Kvitova would suffer another wobble as Bogdan put up a strong fight

in the second set, winning five games in a row from 6-1, 5-1 down to lead 6-5 in the second set. However, she tightened things up just in time to overcome Bogdan. Serving at 5-6, she staved off two set points, one with an ace and the next with a one-two punch, and then edged the ensuing tiebreak, according to a report on the WTA Tour. After 1 hour and 45 minutes, Kvitova finished with 40 winners, including 10 aces, to 24 unforced errors; Bogdan ultimately tallied 18 winners and only seven unforced errors. Badosa, who lost her Eastbourne opener to Jodie Burrage last week, has recovered to book her place in the third round of Wimbledon for the second year in a row. The 24-year-old has reached at least that stage in five of the past six majors. The pair have played
once before, with Kvitova winning 7-5, 7-5 in the second round of the 2020 Australian Open. The scoreline belies the toughness of the challenge Bara posted at times. The No.122-ranked The result means that this is the first season of 32-yearold Cornet’s career in which she has reached the last 32 of each of the first 3 Slams.
Murray crashes out in second-round
Three-time Grand Slam winner Andy Murray crashed out of the Wimbledon 2022 after losing 4-6, 6-7 (4-7), 7-6 (7-3), 4-6 to USA’s No.20 seed John Isner in the second-round here on Wednesday. In contrast to his third-round exit last year at his home Grand Slam, the Briton felt his game and his body were prepared for a second-week run this fortnight.
