DIMAPUR, JUL 1 (NPN): In order to allow uninterrupted road repair and maintenance work at major bridge KM 155+245, minor bridge KM 165+158 and other portions of Dimapur-Kohima (NH-29) four-lane, deputy commissioner Kohima, Shanavas C has issued traffic advisory. In this regard, all vehicular movement will remain suspended from Chapru (Bamboo Hall/restaurant) to Zubza police station from 12 noon to 4 pm on July 10, 17, 24 and 31.

actually has a loose tongue and has made all kinds of irresponsible statements on TV and set the entire country on fire. Yet, she claims to be a lawyer of 10 years standing... She should have immediately apologised for her comments to the whole country,” the court said. S h a r m a ’s r e m a r k
against the Prophet during a TV debate triggered protests across the country and drew sharp reactions from many Gulf countries. The BJP subsequently suspended her from the party. The bench said, “her apology came too late and that too conditionally saying if religious sentiments are hurt and so on. She should have been on TV immediately and apologised to the nation”. While refusing to entertain Sharma’s plea for clubbing of FIRs, a vacation bench of Justices Surya Kant and JB Pardiwala allowed her to withdraw the plea.
agenda before the Centre and the stakeholders, adding even former governor and Centre’s interlocutor for Naga peace talks RN Ravi had in his address to Nagaland Legislative Assembly (NLA) announced that talks had concluded. The Assembly passed Motion of Thanks to the governor’s address. After this, he recalled that another resolution was passed by NLA pressing the Centre “to resume talks” and repeated “One solution for all”. Therie however said one solution for all Naga inhabitants of various States and suggesting to provide land at tri-junction of Ingtanki National Reserve Forest were all false hopes. But noting that the UDA chairman had made it clear in recent times that the reserved forest could not be part of the solution, he said the UDA apparently appeared to be divided on the issue.
Positive cases of ASF confirmed in Kohima, Dimapur districts
in Nagaland as the “underground writs” were applied everywhere over which the State government had no control. Knowing that both were hand in glove, Therie said the Central government had given clear directive to UDA government to convince NSCN (I-M). But, instead of convincing, he alleged that the UDA coalition engineered Pan Naga Hoho (PNH) with chief minister Neiphiu Rio even going to the extent of stating that the Centre had not “rejected” separate Naga flag and constitution. Further, Therie pointed out that Rio had also offered many times to pave the way for honourable and acceptable solution. He said stakeholders had also given the mandate to the Centre for implementation of the solution with talks having been concluded in 2019. Meanwhile, the NPCC president said he had dis-
DIMAPUR, JUL 1 (NPN): Nagaland RMSA Teachers Association (NRMSATA), 2016 batch has said that the state government has so far failed to comply with the March 16, 2022 High Court directive, which ordered the government to implement pay scale for the underpaid RMSA (2016) subject teachers in parity with their counterparts. NRMSATA-2016 president Imlitemjen stated that the Gauhati High Court, Kohima bench had upheld the principle of “Equal Pay for Equal Work” in favour of the NRMSATA, 2016. NRMSATA-2016 said that supported by the rule of law and several declassified documents it had reminded state government of its blatant contempt of court by submitting a representation regarding implementation of pay scale and service regularisation to the government on May 24, 2022.
cially ruled out. According to him, the last paragraph of FA states, “The two sides agreed that within this Framework Agreement details and execution plan will be worked out and implemented shortly”. He pointed out that the Centre had stood by the principles of FA and came to conclusion with Working Committee, Naga National Political Groups on Agreed Position. But accusing UDA of refusing to recognise the two official agreements (Framework Agreement and Agreed Position), Therie alleged that the State government was actually pushing for PNH with the demand for legislative and executive powers over the Nagas residing in Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur and Nagaland. However, the proposal was rejected by the respective States and also by the stakeholders. Since then, he claimed PNH was a non-

DIMAPUR, JUL 1 (NPN): Taking a pot shot at the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) government, Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee (NPCC) president K. Therie accused UDA of being the “roadblock to settlement” and responsible for prolonging the suffering of the people. In a statement, Therie also stressed that if Prime Minister Narendra Modi was at all honest in his announcement that the Naga problem had been resolved as announced to the nation and if BJP’s commitment to “Election for Solution” were of any truth, then time was running out for them to keep their commitments. Asser ting that the Centre had the constitutional right to remove the roadblock by removing the UDA government to settle the Naga issue, Therie said Government of India was fully aware of the collapse of constitutional machinery
NEW DELHI, JUL 1 (PTI): The Supreme Court on Friday came down heavily on suspended BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma for her controversial comments against the Prophet, saying her “loose tongue” has “set the entire country on fire” and that she is “single-handedly responsible for what is happening in the country”. Refusing to entertain Sharma’s plea for clubbing of FIRs lodged in various states against her for the remark, the bench held that the comment was made either for cheap publicity, political agenda or some nefarious activities. “She
cussed the issue of roadblock to a political settlement of Naga issue with Congress leader and MP, Rahul Gandhi, adding that he was accompanied by NPCC vice-president V Lasuh and AICC (I/c Nagaland) Dr Ajoy Kumar. He mentioned that he had also briefed High Powered Committee of AICC in March 2020 and sought support to the settlement of the two official agreements, to which the committee had agreed in principle. Gandhi was concerned as to why the agreements were not honoured, wondering why one should go back from an agreement, he claimed. To clear the cloud, Therie said he had explained that Framework Agreement (FA) was the basis, adding that NSCN (I-M) general secretary Th Muivah’s statement at Agri Expo in 2012 was confirmed in the FA that issues of sovereignty and integration were offi-

NBSE suggests measures to mitigate loss of learning DIMAPUR: Nagaland Board of School Education (NBSE) has informed all heads of schools registered with NBSE that over two years, due to the pandemic, there has been a disruption in the education system and an increase in disparity in teaching and learning process. According to a DIPR report, NBSE said the efforts put in by schools to ensure learning takes place through digital means were laudable, however, this it said, was “a poor substitute for in-person learning.” Pointing out that school closures have also imperilled children’s overall well-being and development, the board said the future of many may be at stake and that this was the time to act fast. In this regard, schools have been encouraged to take suggested measures/interventions including—foundational literacy as envisaged in the NEP 2020 to be enforced in schools; remedial classes (to intervene and plan strategies to mitigate learning losses that happened). In this regard, schools have been advised to start remedial classes/teaching from Class
V onwards. Schools can identify and work on allotting additional classes/extended hours to remediate learning loss and to enable the teachers to rebuild the core concepts; teachers will need to prepare themselves, in a way they can provide supportive learning environment that focuses not only on cognitive domain but also on addressing students’ health and psychosocial and emotional wellbeing. S c h o o l s h ave b e e n asked to counsel students on mental and emotional health or well-being wherever necessary; to focus on strengths of students rather than weaknesses, connecting their school work to something they are passionate about, valuing their efforts and assisting them in better understanding. The board has informed schools to introduce afterschool classes or supplemental assignments or a mix of classroom teaching and self-study through blended learning to strengthen basic concepts and topics covered; developing and dissemination of common class-wise

weekly plan of learning and assessment by teachers to give more systematic support to students, keeping in mind slow learners and providing special attention to such students. Accordingly, teachers may prepare class-wise materials like teaching-learning materials, workbooks, worksheets, and activity-based materials to ensure continuity in retention, transition, and learning. NBSE also informed that children with special needs should be given due attention and their varied needs should be addressed; schools should also connect and work together with parents to address the needs of students. “The plan of action to be undertaken by the schools should be disseminated to the parents so that parents can play a supportive role in the education of their children”, the board stated. In this regard, schools have been reminded to ensure that students receive “effective remedial learning and support”, in order to recover from the negative impact of the pandemic and improve their overall welfare.
Meanwhile, Dr. Lolekhol Pucho acknowledged the initiative taken up by the director of John 3:16 Society, Hamkai Arolim for the time contributed to care for the seniors. During their telephonic conversation, the two leaders also discussed global issues, including the state of the international energy and food markets, a statement from the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) said. The two leaders reviewed the implementation of the decisions taken during President Putin’s visit to India in December 2021, In particular, they exchanged ideas on how bilateral trade in agricultural goods, fertilizers and pharma products could be encouraged further, it said. The two leaders also discussed global issues, including the state of the international energy and food markets. “In the context of the ongoing situation in Ukraine, Prime Minister reiterated India’s longstanding position in favour of dialogue and diplomacy,” the PMO said. The leaders agreed to
Vladimir Putin and Narendra Modi. (File) maintain regular consultations on global and bilateral issues, it said. Russia’s TASS new agency quoted Kremlin press as saying that the two leaders discussed pressing issues pertaining to Russian-India ties, while focusing on steps to develop further mutually advantageous economic cooperation. They expressed mutual willingness to enhance the privileged strategic partnership between Russia and India, the Kremlin press service was quoted as saying in a statement. It also said that Putin discussed with Modi the progress of the “special military operation” in
Ukraine and, in particular, drew attention to the “escalation of the crisis by Kiev and its Western patrons”. Putin briefed Modi on key aspects of Russia’s military operation, “stressing the dangerous and provocative nature of the line of the Kiev regime and its Western patrons to escalate the crisis and derail efforts to resolve it politically and diplomatically”, the Russian statement said. “Putin drew attention to the systemic mistakes made by a number of countries, which led to the disruption of free trade in food products and provoked a significant increase in their price. Illegitimate sanctions against Russia
have exacerbated an already difficult situation,” the Kremlin press service was quoted as saying. It also said that Putin stressed that Russia has been and remains a reliable producer and supplier of grain, fertilizers, and energy carriers, including to Indian partners. T h e c o nve r s a t i o n with Putin come days after Modi, in an apparent reference to the Ukraine crisis, had noted that the G7 and those invited at its summit in Germany were meeting amid an atmosphere of global tension and asserted that India has always been in favour of peace. “Even in the present situation, we have constantly urged for the path of dialogue and diplomacy. The impact of this geopolitical tension is not just limited to Europe. The rising prices of energy and food grains are affecting all the countries,” he had said in his remarks at a G7 summit session. He had also said the energy and security of developing countries is particularly at risk. Modi has also raised concerns over food security amid the conflict in Ukraine.
Rahul visits vandalised Wayanad BJP to hold office, calls it ‘irresponsible act’ national executive
Rahul Gandhi WAYANAD (KERALA), JUL 1 (PTI): Calling the Students’ Federation of India (SFI) activists who had vandalised his office as “kids”, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Friday said he does not harbour any anger or hostility towards them and reminded them that violence never resolves problems. Gandhi, who is on a three-day visit to his constituency here, reached the office along with other senior leaders of the party and took stock of the damage. The Wayanad MP met the party workers, who had suffered injuries in the attack, examined the damaged articles and sat on the office chair after removing the plantain tree placed by the attackers on it. It is for the first time that he is arriving in his Lok Sabha constituency after his MP’s office here was attacked by the students’ wing of the ruling CPI(M) last Friday over the buffer zone issue. Later, he told reporters that it is the office of the people of Wayanad and what had been done by the Left students’ cadre was “quite an unfor-
tunate thing.” But, he made it clear that violence never resolves problems and he does not harbour any anger or hostility towards them. “Everywhere in the country, you see the idea that violence will resolve problems. And, violence never resolves problems... It’s not a good thing to do...they acted in an irresponsible way. But, I don’t have any anger or hostility towards them,” he said. Gandhi also called the SFI activists who indulged in violence as “kids”. Last week, a protest march of the SFI against Gandhi turned violent after a group of Left activists allegedly barged into his office here and vandalised it, prompting Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan to strongly condemn the incident and warn of stern action against the culprits. Strongly condemning “the act of violence” by SFI of its top leader’s office at Kalpetta in Gandhi’s LS constituency Wayanad, the Congress staged a statewide protest, which turned violent in some regions. The incident occurred when the SFI activists held a march to Gandhi’s office alleging his inaction in the issue of buffer zones around forests. Issuing a slew of directions, the Supreme Court had on June 3 ordered that no permanent structure would be allowed within eco-sensitive zones and said if the local law or other rules provide for an ESZ of more than one kilometre, then the earlier provision would continue to apply.
in Hyderabad
NEW DELHI, JUL 1 (PTI): With Maharashtra in its kitty, the BJP has consolidated its position in the north-western region and now has set it eyes on southern states especially Telangana where it is holding its national executive starting Saturday. This will be the first physical meeting of the BJP’s key decision-making body outside the national capital after a gap of five years and the third in a southern state after coming to power in 2014. The BJP is holding its national executive in Hyderabad after a gap of 18 years. To give further push to the party’s efforts to expand its base in the southern states including new catchment area Telangana, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will hold a massive rally on July 3 in Hyderabad. The rally is expected to be based on the theme of local culture and tradition. The BJP’s national executive meeting is being held in Hyderabad at a time when the party is trying to make further inroads in the state, whereas the K Chandrashekar Rao-led ruling TRS is working to cobble an alliance to challenge the saffron party at the national level. In the run up to the meeting, BJP leaders from across the country carried outreach activities and interacted with party workers in all 119 constituencies.

Maintaining that Murmu had better chances to win the July 18 presidential election, with NDA’s numbers having got boosted after the change of guard in Maharashtra, Banerjee stressed that “a consensus candidate is always better for the country”. “BJP’s presidential candidate Droupadi
Murmu has better chances (to win presidential polls) because of Maharashtra development. If the BJP had asked for our suggestion before announcing the name of Murmu, we could have considered it, too, bearing greater interests in mind,” Banerjee told reporters on the sidelines of a Rath Yatra
programme here. The TMC supremo said that she “will go by what the opposition parties decide”. Non-BJP parties, including the Congress as well as the TMC, have named former Union minister Yashwant Sinha as the joint nominee for the presidential polls.
Army, Navy begin recruitment under Agnipath scheme NEW DELHI, JUL 1 (PTI): The Indian Army and Navy began their recruitment processes under the Agnipath scheme on Friday, the defence ministry stated. The IAF had on June 24 started its recruitment process under the scheme and it received 2.72 lakh applications till Thursday, the ministry said. Violent protests against the scheme had rocked several states for nearly a week after it was unveiled on June 14 and opposition parties demanded its rollback. The Ministry of Defence on Friday said on Twitter, “Registration for Agniveers in Indian Navy begins today.” “Join the Indian Army. Fulfill your dream of serving the country as Agniveer. Registration open for Agnipath recruitment scheme from July 1,” it said. Under Agnipath scheme, youths from 17-and-a-half years to 21 years will be inducted into the armed forces for a 4-year tenure, while 25 % of them will be subsequently inducted for regular service. The government had on June 16 increased the upper age limit for recruitment under the scheme to 23 years from 21 for this year, and subsequently announced a slew of placatory steps such as a preference for Agniveers in central paramilitary forces and defence public sector.

Missing the bus
agaland’s best and immediate hope comes from nature’s bounty in the form of extraction of crude oil and gas reserves which are estimated at around 600 million tonnes and valued at Rs. 25,20,000 crore. If oil and gas extraction is undertaken and according to the Oil Field Act, OIL and ONGC are required to pay 20 per cent royalty on price of crude oil it extracts from onland oil blocks to the respective State governments. Based on this premise, Nagaland will be getting huge oil royalty in terms of a few thousand crore rupees annually. The ONGC had extracted at least ten times more than the quantity it ought to have done as trial basis which was around 1.5 million metric tonnes. Nagaland was paid a paltry Rs.33 crore as royalty in 1993. Had the government of Nagaland been mindful about the manner in which oil from Nagaland, especially Wokha district was being extracted, the revenue would have been at least ten times more. Successive governments in Nagaland under the control of politicians who were disinclined to earn the displeasure of Naga nationalist groups and the students, did not press for oil operations. Some however maintained that the consent of landowners was needed as they have the right as per Article 371(A) (a) clause(iv) ownership and transfer of land and its resources. Decades after oil operations were halted by the state government, the mood has been reversed and instead there is a clamour for exploration and extraction in view of the huge revenue potential. The NPF government in 2012, with understanding from all those who had earlier strongly objected to sell out’ of Naga resources, was able to take up the issue in the state assembly and enact the Nagaland Petroleum and Natural Gas(NPNG) Regulation 2012.The Rule was pushed through without realising that there are hurdles to the constitutional validity of Nagaland’s Article 371(A) as to whether it enabled the state to frame its own rules and regulations for calling of bid for oil operations. The UPA-II government at the Centre made it clear that only parliament alone has authority to frame laws for oil operations as per the Entry 53 of List -1 of the Seventh Schedule and also the Mines and Minerals(Regulation and Development)Act 1957 which extensively invests mines and minerals as the occupied field of the union of India. The crisis that society in Nagaland suffers from is that its leaders self-inflict paralysis due to over indulgence in political rhetoric. Thus when the movement should have progressed, it has only been moving in the same spot. Even as early as 1994, this newspaper had reported, more by way understanding that modern technology in drilling will not prevent oil being extracted from Nagaland’s oil basins in the disputed border with Assam by ONGC. This notion was shot down by those in authority who believed then, that technology hasn’t developed for horizontal drilling. Horizontal drilling techniques allow for extraction of crude oil from an oil basin located far away. It is suspected that this was being used by ONGC drilling machines at Assam side to extract oil from Changpang oil basin. On the other hand, fossil oil is not going to last forever. Today other non-fossil fuel alternatives such as CNG, solar, hydroelectric and bio-fuels are the options. Time is indeed running out for Nagaland and the people and their leaders need to shake themselves to reality.
DailyDevotion The Inevitable Penalty
You will by no means get out of there till you have paid the last penny. —Matthew 5:26
There is no heaven that has a little corner of hell in it. God is determined to make you pure, holy, and right, and He will not allow you to escape from the scrutiny of the Holy Spirit for even one moment. He urged you to come to judgment immediately when He convicted you, but you did not obey. Then the inevitable process began to work, bringing its inevitable penalty. Now you have been “thrown into prison, [and]…you will by no means get out of there till you have paid the last penny” (Matthew 5:25-26). Yet you ask, “Is this a God of mercy and love?” When seen from God’s perspective, it is a glorious ministry of love. God is going to bring you out pure, spotless, and undefiled, but He wants you to recognize the nature you were exhibiting— the nature of demanding your right to yourself. The moment you are willing for God to change your nature, His recreating forces will begin to work. And the moment you realize that God’s purpose is to get you into the right relationship with Himself and then with others, He will reach to the very limits of the universe to help you take the right road. Decide to do it right now, saying, “Yes, Lord, I will write that letter,” or, “I will be reconciled to that person now.” These sermons of Jesus Christ are meant for your will and your conscience, not for your head. If you dispute these verses from the Sermon on the Mount with your head, you will dull the appeal to your heart. If you find yourself asking, “I wonder why I’m not growing spiritually with God?”— then ask yourself if you are paying your debts from God’s standpoint. Do now what you will have to do someday. Every moral question or call comes with an “ought” behind it— the knowledge of knowing what we ought to do.

hen we are united and work together then there is always more possibilities of achieving success than working individually. When it comes to team work and people centric association then we hear the word cooperatives. We should be aware that more than 12% of humanity is part of any of the 3 million cooperatives in the world; the largest 300 cooperatives and mutuals report a total turnover of 2,034.98 billion USD according to World Cooperative Monitor 2020. It also tells us that cooperatives employ 280 million people across the globe (10% of the world’s employed population). A cooperative is defined in the Statement on the Cooperative Identity as “an autonomous association of persons united voluntarily to meet their common economic, social and cultural needs and aspirations through a jointly

owned and democratically controlled enterprise.” The best part is that cooperatives are people-centred enterprises owned, controlled and run by and for their members to realise their common economic, social, and cultural needs and aspirations and it brings people together in a democratic and equal way. Cooperatives allow people to take control of their economic future and, because they are not owned by shareholders, the economic and social benefits of their activity stay in the communities where they are established. Profits generated are either reinvested in the enterprise or returned to the members. Co-operatives also foster external equality. As they are communitybased, they are committed to the sustainable development of their communities - environmentally, socially and economically. The cooperative movement is
highly democratic, locally autonomous, but internationally integrated, and a form of organization of associations and enterprises whereby citizens themselves rely on self-help and their own responsibility to meet goals that include not only economic, but also social and environmental objectives, such as overcoming poverty, securing productive employment and encouraging social integration. Cooperative Principles • Voluntary and Open Membership • Democratic Member Control • Member Economic Participation • Autonomy and Independence • Education, Training, and Information • Cooperation among Cooperatives • Concern for Community The International Cooperative Alliance unites, represents and serves coop-
eratives worldwide. Founded in 1895, it is one of the oldest non-governmental organizations and one of the largest ones measured by the number of people represented. The earliest record of a co-operative comes from Scotland on March 14, 1761. In 1844 a group of 28 artisans working in the cotton mills in north of England established the first modern co-operative business. On July 2, cooperatives all around the world will celebrate the 100th International Day of Cooperatives (#CoopsDay). A decade on from the United Nations International Year of Cooperatives, which showcased the unique contribution of cooperatives to making the world a better place, this year’s #CoopsDay slogan — “Cooperatives Build a Better World”— echoes the theme of the International Year. List of few National
Co-operative Societies in India are as follows : National Cooperative Land Development Banks Federation Limited; National Federation of State Cooperative Banks Limited; National Cooperative Union of India Limited; National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India Limited; National Cooperative Consumer’s Federation of India Limited; National Federation of Industrial Cooperative Limited; National Cooperative Housing Federation Limited; Indian Farmer’s Fertiliser Cooperative Limited; All India Federation of Cooperative Spinning Mills Limited; All India Industrial Cooperative Banks Federation Limited; National Cooperative Dairy Federation of India Limited; National Heavy Engineering Cooperative Limited; All India Handloom Fabrics Marketing Cooperative Society Limited; National Federation of Urban Co-
operative Banks and Credit Societies Limited; Krishak Bharati Cooperative Limited; National Federation of Fishermen’s Cooperative Limited; National Federation of Labour Cooperative Limited; National Cooperative Tobacco Growers Federation Limited; Tribal Cooperative Marketing Development Federation of India Limited. If planned and executed with the true spirit of the cooperatives then it can enhance in achieving Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). From fighting hunger and poverty it can also help in bringing sustainable transformation in developing nations or even developed nations when it comes to combating climate change. The day brings the opportunity to focus on the importance of cooperatives and its contribution to humanity. Ranjan K Baruah Guwahati, Assam bkranjan@gmail.com

A Bridge from America to Nagaland
eople build bridges over rivers or seas to connect places, and also to create a bridge between deep gorges and rocky terrains. These bridges are visible to the human eye, and these are tangible infrastructures. Likewise, there is a bridge built between America and Nagaland which many Nagas might be aware of. Should the Nagas reflect deeply upon our fate, as there is so much evidence of God’s great love for our people!? God saw the need to send light upon the darkness that our forefathers were living in. A very small community with an insignificant population and size in geography. Yet, God chose to send missionaries from one of the world’s great superpowers to deliver and rescue the downtrodden, less privileged people. These stories testify the innumerable testimonies of God’s wonderful plans for the people of Nagaland, and they are beautiful lessons for us to carry forward. Every Naga is aware of the history of how Christianity was brought to Nagaland by Reverend Dr. Edward Winter Clark. Christianity made its first mark on the 18th December 1872, making its first step in Molungkimong, a village under Mokokchung district. On the 23rdof December 1872, Reverend Dr. Clark baptized 15 Nagas and founded the first Naga Baptist Church. Further, on 24thOctober 1876, Molungyimsen village was founded, and God’s anointed mission spread on, throughout the villages in Nagaland with its mission based in Molungyimsen
village. Out of the many changes which this Christian mission brought over the Nagas, there are several notable works that needs to be revisited: I. The primitive tribes in Nagaland became believers of Christ and Christianity. II. Christianity ended the fearful head-hunting practice among the Nagas. III. The dead were given a respectable and proper burial in cemeteries. IV. Healthcare and hygiene lifestyles were introduced and practiced among the Nagas. V. Mary Mead Clark started the first school in Molungyimsen village in 1878 which resulted in starting more schools in different villages among the Nagas. VI. The Nagas learned better ways of skills in terms of singing and recreation. VII. In addition to men, even the women were given opportunities in social and religious spheres. VIII. Livelihood skills were relearnt with better practices in animal rearing and farming. The American Baptist Mission was not only an evangelism mission of the gospel, but also a holistic and an all-rounded mission that opened the eyes of the people of Nagaland. The mission resulted in freeing the Nagas from the darkness of ignorance and illiteracy, and the missionaries responsible for these changes can quite possibly be called the fathers of the Nagas! There is another wonderful testimony that needs to be acknowledged. The first Christian
village in Nagaland was Molungyimsen, which was founded by the American Baptist Missionaries under Dr. E.W. Clark. The Naga youth of this generation should share and spread the testimony to their counterparts in America that there is a village founded by the Americans in Nagaland which was the genesis of Christianity amongst the Nagas. Such a story may help to create a better bond and pride between the two ethnicities. 1957 was a year that saw the beginning of great tragedies and sorrows for the people of Nagaland. The Indian Armed Forces Special Powers Act, introduced in 1958 saw the razing and destruction of many villages in Nagaland by the Indian Armed forces. The armed forces entered Molungyimsen village to burn it down. One Rev. Nükshinüken stood very courageously in opposition, stating that this village was founded by the Americans. The church and the council unitedly stood against the order and God intervened to keep this village safe. An order was issued, to burn down Molungyimsen and to send groupings to Molungkimong village. The church and council brought forth a request to the then Governor of Assam, under Imtikazük Sanglir, GB and a village Elder, Nokbangnenba. After much persistence, the order of sending groupings and the burning down of the village was avoided with the efforts of I. Sashimeren Aier (of Mopungchuket) and Sosangchiba (of Molungyimsen) who under the strong leadership of the village elders submitted the said
What does it mean to be Christian?
A
s a Christian, someone who has put faith in trust in the redemptive work of Jesus Christ through His death on the cross and subsequent resurrection, our behavior mirrors, reflects and resembles Christ. When we put our faith and trust in Christ, when we commit our lives to serving Him and serving others as He served us, our behavior and mindset reflects the indwelling of the Holy Spirit in our hearts. Christ is with us and in us. We are new creations! Our old way of thinking is gone. Our motivation, desire, and purpose are replaced with delight in the things of God. The joys and pleasures of our lives are exponentially enhanced through our relationship with Christ. And our selfish and worldly pursuits are exchanged for desire to honor God. Life in Christ is not a life of “I don’t get to do what I like.” It’s not a life of loss. Instead, it’s a life of abundance, where what I used to like and desire pales in comparison to what my heart now desires. Christians see, feel and experience the world in a different way. A much grander, deeper and meaningful way. One of the new ways we see the
Governor order to the then SDO, Civil in Mokokchung. Nagas as Christians and ‘Nagaland for Christ’ are identities and terms, we Nagas have built for ourselves. There are events when the government in the Center initiated policies and laws to hinder the Christian values and practices. Some examples such as, observing Christmas Day as Good Governance Day, or Good Friday as Digital India Day are ignorant intentions that oppose our Christian values and observances. There may be more such policies in the near future, and it is important that politicians and policy makers in Nagaland oppose those policies that are against Christian values. If our leaders become incapable of doing anything to protect Christianity in Nagaland, Nagas will be like orphans. Nagaland is obser ving changes with the creation of more districts which can be seen as a move towards development and avenue to create more employment and job opportunities. Each new district headquarter will have its own DC, IAS and other such heads of various departments. But the majority of these top posts have been headed by outsiders and with the lack of support; Nagas will remain voiceless and powerless on any decisive matters. Irrespective of geography and race, the Nagas were liberated from the darkness by one of the world’s superpowers. The Nagas accepted and believed the Christ they introduced to us. When there are other forces that create a hindrance in practicing those beliefs, it is our right to seek guidance and
help from those who first brought Christianity to Nagaland. This right and this bond is a privilege that God initiated and anointed between our forefathers from the beginning of this relationship. 2022 is a year of celebration of 150 years of Christianity in Nagaland and 150 years of a bridge of friendship in Christ built between Americans and Nagas. The year of Sesquicentennial has to be a year of thanksgiving of how God provided the Nagas and the American Baptist Mission this wonderful opportunity to declare the greatness and faithfulness of God. A final lesson we can take from the life of Rev. Dr. E.W. Clark (who risked everything despite the uncertainty and dangers amongst a headhunting community), is that an American Missionary listened to the call of God and responded, “Yes! I will go.” Can our Naga Christian youths and leaders take a similar response with the same courage and faith and walk towards the truth that Christ has taught us? Today we remember and honor the sacrifices and work of Rev. Dr. Clark and his wife Mary Mead. If the young Nagas and leaders of today work towards strengthening the bridge built 150 years back and progress in the wisdom, courage and faith of our pioneer missionaries, our prayers of blessings as your Naga elders will guide and go with you all the way. God bless and keep Nagaland for Christ! Y. Imsü Imchen Social activist email:imsuimchen@gmail.com

NAGALAND POST, DIMAPUR SATURDAY, JULY 2, 2022
reminds BJP of promise Shinde not a ‘Shiv Sena CM’, says Uddhav Akhilesh to provide laptops to students
MUMBAI/PANAJI, JUL 1 (PTI): Shiv Sena president Uddhav Thackeray on Friday questioned the BJP’s decision to install a “so-called Shiv Sainik” as Maharashtra chief minister when it did not keep its 2019 promise of rotating the top post and slammed the new government’s move to relocate a Mumbai Metro car shed to green belt of Aarey Colony, reversing a key decision of the previous regime. In his first public comments after stepping down as chief minister on June 29, Thackeray took on the former ally BJP and accused it of not honouring what he claimed was an understanding between him and Union minister Amit Shah to rotate the CM’s post between the two saffron parties after the 2019 Assembly polls. A day after taking over as Deputy Chief Minister, BJP leader Devendra Fadnavis, who first announced not to join the Eknath Shindeled government only to re-
lent later, was conspicuous by his absence during a celebration held at the party’s state headquarters. The programme at the party office in south Mumbai was meant to celebrate its return to power in Maharashtra after two-and-half years following the collapse of the Uddhav Thackerayled MVA government. Addressing a press conference, Thackeray refused to accept Eknath Shinde as a “Shiv Sena chief minister” and wondered what the BJP has gained by not having its own leader at the helm for the remaining term of the top office. Thackeray also made a fervent appeal to the Shindeled government, which will face floor test in the Assembly on July 4, not to go ahead with the Metro-3 car shed project at Aarey Colony, a green belt in suburban Goregaon which was declared a reserved forest by the previous MVA regime. The former CM asked
Uddhav Thackeray
the BJP not to betray Mumbai on the car shed issue like it “betrayed” him in power politics. “Let the Metro car shed project be at Kanjurmarg (the site chosen by MVA government) and not in Aarey. I am with the environmentalists and we had declared Aarey as a reserved forest. Wildlife exists in that forest,” he said. In their first cabinet meeting held on Thursday, Shinde and deputy chief minister Fadnavis directed the state administration to submit a proposal to build the Metro-3 car shed in Aarey Colony instead of Kanjurmarg. The Thackeray-led
government had shifted the proposed car shed site to Kanjurmarg from Aarey Colony, but the move got embroiled in a legal dispute. Thackeray asked the BJP why it first denied that there was no agreement on rotational chief minister two-and-a-half years ago. Had the BJP agreed, the change of power would have happened in a graceful and dignified manner, he said. “The way this (Shinde) government was formed and those (the BJP) who formed the government…they have said that a ‘so called Shiv Sainik’ has been made the chief minister. “Had everything taken place as decided between me and Amit Shah, the change of power would have been graceful and I would not have become the chief minister or the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) would not have been formed,” Thackeray said at the press meet at Shiv Sena Bhavan. Asserting that Shinde is “not a Shiv Sena chief
minister”, Thackeray said there can be no Shiv Sena by keeping the party aside. Springing a surprise, Fadnavis on Thursday evening announced that Shinde, who led the revolt in the Shiv Sena, would be the new chief minister of the state. “Those who did not keep the word two-anda-half-years back and by back-stabbing (the Sena)… again attempts are made to create confusion among the Shiv Sainiks by calling it (Shinde) a Shiv Sena CM, then this is not a Sena CM. There can be no Sena CM by keeping the Sena aside,” Thackeray said. Meanwhile, the Supreme Court on Friday agreed to hear on July 11 the plea of Shiv Sena chief whip Sunil Prabhu seeking suspension from assembly of Chief Minister Shinde and 15 rebel MLAs against whom disqualification pleas are pending, saying it was “fully conscious” of the issue.
LUCKNOW, JUL 1 (PTI): Interacting with the media for the first time after the Samajwadi Party’s defeat in the Lok Sabha bypolls, Akhilesh Yadav on Friday refrained from making any political comments except for reminding the state government about its old poll promise of giving laptops to students. The SP chief ducked a volley of questions on the party’s stunning loss in the two politically significant seats - Azamgarh and Rampur -- saying, “Today’s press conference is only on congratulating the children and on laptops.” The BJP has taken away Azamgarh and Rampur Lok Sabha seats vacated by Yadav himself and senior SP leader Azam Khan, respectively, after getting elected as MLAs. After the declaration of results on Sunday, Yadav and his party leaders
Akhilesh Yadav
had through statements and tweets accused the BJP government of winning the polls by “misusing” official machinery. The media fired several questions at the SP supremo on the defeat in the bypolls and also ally Om Prakash Rajbhar’s advice that he should come out of the air-conditioned room and work with the masses, but he refused to answer. The SP chief distributed laptops to some students on his birthday and reminded the state government about its promise of providing laptops.
“Since we are not in power, we could give laptops only to a few children. And these are given so that the government is reminded of its old promise,” he told reporters here. As the then chief minister, Yadav had started a scheme under which laptops were given to the students, who cleared the high school and intermediate examinations, to encourage them for higher studies. Over 16 lakh laptops were distributed by the Uttar Pradesh government from 2012 to 2016. Yadav claimed that the BJP had made a similar promise ahead of the 2017 assembly elections, too, but did not fulfil it. “I am giving you (the laptops) to remind the government. We can give these only to some people, but the government can give them to everyone,” the SP chief added.
Bomb explodes in Patna court, cop injured Nationwide ban on single-use plastics comes into effect NEW DELHI, JUL 1 (PTI): The ban on certain single-use plastic (SUP) items kicks in from Friday, with state governments initiating an enforcement campaign to identify and close down units engaging in production, distribution, stocking and sale of such items, officials said. Though several manufacturers have said they are not prepared to implement the ban due to a lack of alternatives, Union Environment
Minister Bhupender Yadav had on Tuesday said the government had given enough time to the industry and the general public to prepare for the ban on SUP items and it hopes for everyone’s cooperation in implementing it from July 1. Violation of the ban will invite punitive action, including a fine or a jail term or both, detailed under Section 15 of the Environment Protection Act (EPA) and under bylaws of respective municipal corporations,
officials in the Union environment ministry said. For effective enforcement of the ban, national and state-level control rooms have been set up and special enforcement teams formed to check illegal manufacture, import, stocking, distribution, sale and use of banned SUP items, they said. States and Union Territories have been asked to set up border checkpoints to stop the interstate movement of any banned SUP items.
The Central Pollution Control Board has also launched a grievance redressal application to empower citizens to help curb the use of plastic. Officials said plastic used for packaging in the FMCG sector is not banned but will be covered under the Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) guidelines. The EPR is a producer’s responsibility to ensure environmentally-sound management of the product
until the end of its life. According to the CPCB, India generates around 2.4 lakh tonnes of SUP per annum. The per capita SUP production is 0.18 kg per year. On August 12 last year, the ministry had issued a notification prohibiting manufacture, import, stocking, distribution, sale and use of identified SUP commodities, including polystyrene and expanded polystyrene from July 1, 2022.

NAGALAND POST, DIMAPUR SATURDAY, JULY 2, 2022
BUSINESS/STATE
Govt slaps export tax on petrol, diesel Govt failed to follow HC directive: NRMSATA-2016
NEW DELHI, JUL 1 (PTI): The government on Friday slapped an export tax on petrol and diesel after some refineries made “phenomenal profits” shipping overseas at the cost of domestic supplies, and imposed a Rs 66,000 crore windfall tax on crude oil produced locally. A Rs 6 per litre tax on export of petrol and ATF and Rs 13 per litre tax on export of diesel is effective from July 1, finance ministry notifications showed. Additionally, a Rs 23,250 per tonne tax was levied on crude oil produced domestically, which at last year’s production level of close to 29 million tonnes translates into annual revenue of Rs 66,000 crore to the government. Assuming the trend of exporting 5.7 million tonnes of diesel and 2.5 million tonnes of petrol in the first two months of the fiscal that began in April 2022 continues for the full fiscal, the revenue from the windfall tax on crude and the export levy should neutralise the Rs
1 lakh crore hit the government took when it rolled back the pandemic-era hike in excise duty on petrol and diesel. The export tax is to deter companies such as Reliance Industries and Rosneftbased Nayara Energy from preferring overseas markets over domestic supplies. Giving out reasons for the introduction of the new levies, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said “phenomenal profits” earned from abnormal prices that refiners earned from shipping overseas led to the new taxes. “We don’t grudge people earning profits,” she said. “But if oil is not being available (at petrol pumps) and they are being exported... exported with such phenomenal profits. We need at least some of it for our own citizens and that is why we have taken this twin-pronged approach.” “It is not to discourage exports, it is not to discourage India as a refining hub. It is certainly not against profit earning, but extraordinary times do require some such
steps,” Sitharaman said. The windfall tax on oil producers was triggered by Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) and Oil India Ltd (OIL) reporting bumper profits in the March quarter (when international prices soared to a near 14year high of USD 139 per barrel) and record earnings in 2021-22. ONGC reported a record net profit of Rs 40,306 crore on a revenue of Rs 1,10,345 crore in the 202122 fiscal. OIL posted Rs 3,887.31 crore net profit in the fiscal. Vedanta’s Cairn Oil & Gas, which is India’s second-largest oil producer, too had bumper earnings. The new levy plus the oil industry development cess and royalty the producers currently pay will take the total incidence of taxation to about 60 per cent of the oil price. A windfall tax is a oneoff tax on companies that have seen their profits surge extraordinarily not because of any clever investment decision they have taken or an increase in efficiency or
innovation, but simply because of favourable market conditions. Recently, the UK levied a 25 per cent tax on “extraordinary” profits from North Sea oil and gas production to raise USD 6.3 billion. The export tax follows oil refiners, particularly Reliance Industries and Rosneft-backed Nayara Energy, making a killing in exporting fuel to deficit regions such as Europe and the US in the aftermath of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. They are said to have processed Russian crude oil available at a discount after it was shunned by the West and exported fuel produced from it to Europe and the US. The government also framed new rules requiring oil companies exporting petrol to sell in the domestic market the equivalent of 50 per cent of the amount sold to overseas customers for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2023. For diesel, this requirement has been put at 30 per cent of the volume exported.
(From p-1) However, the association said the government has “failed to redress the systemic discrimination it has been employing in its treatment of RMSA teachers.” It alleged that RMSA teachers (2016) have been “victimised and shackled” by corrupt mismanagement, but they have been “revolutionary in the schools where they teach.” The association said that ever since their appointment in 2016, the “newlyupgraded RMSA GHSs” have shown an impressive track record of 100% success rate in HSLC examinations. NRMSATA-2016 claimed that had it not been for the success of RMSA GHSs, the pass percentages of government high schools would have been “abysmally lower than the dismally low pass percentages they have been scoring all these years.” The association alleged that the state govern-
ment, “ignoring these facts”, continued to devalue RMSA teachers (2016) as “outsiders” and use “RMSA Teachers” as a derogatory label to make them feel inferior. NRMSATA-2016 stated that the lack of empathy, support and appreciation was appalling. Stating that education/teaching was a team work, the association has, however, accused the state government of “nefariously” dividing RMSA teachers into different groups “thereby dismembering the solidarity and collegiality of the profession.” “What kind of message are we imparting to the future leaders of tomorrow when the leaders of today are bullying a group of teachers for the mere “crime” of being appointed in 2016 instead of 2013?” the association questioned. It stated that only in Nagaland, employees engaged for the same work were paid less than another discharging the same duties
and responsibilities. Meanwhile, NRMSATA-2016 highlighted the 100% success rate of various schools like GHS Khar (four consecutive years), GHS Saring, GHS Yaongyimsen Compound (3 consecutive years), GHS Longthrok (2019, 2021 and 2022) and GHS Longjang (five successive years). They said that despite the school closures unleashed by the pandemic lockdowns, out of 25 GHSs achieving cent percent result in HSLCE 2021, 13 were RMSA High Schools. They said the same feat was repeated in HSLCE, 2022 where 10 out of 12 GHSs (RMSA high schools) achieved 100 per cent success rate. Had it not been for the success of RMSA GHSs, they said the pass percentages of GHSs would have been abysmally lower than the dismally low pass percentages they have been scoring all these years.
Flouting RMSA guidelines reason for GHS Solumi controversy: RPP
(From p-1) The release stated that if the Department of School Education (DoSE), DEO and SMDC thought that they could shoulder-fire RPP through some third parties, they were welcome. But the party reminded these authorities that their output had been horrible as the HSLC results of the past 10 years would attest. As per NBSE website, RPP pointed out that HSLC result of GHS So-
lumi in 2013 and 2014 was 0% pass, nil HSLC students from 2015-2018, 20% pass in 2019, 0% pass in 2020, 13% pass (Covid protocol exam phase) and 0% pass in 2022. Now that the infrastructure of GHS Solumi was on a par and “running smoothly” since 2019 as stated by the Kiphire DEO, the party asked him to explain the consistently poor result of GHS Solumi to date. RPP also demanded that the DEO should also clarify as to whether the
DPR for construction of the GHS was strictly followed with facilities such as headmaster’s room, staffroom, library, computer room, science laboratory, art/craft/culture room, proper water supply, Dyna roofing, steel roof trussing, furniture, firefighting equipment, green board, laboratory equipment, etc, and implemented. For the benefit of the Naga public, the party urged the DEO, SMDC and DoSE to furnish their reply without delay.

In her brief address, H&FW secretary Asangla Imti explained that under National Health Policy, hospitals performing well under Ayushman Bharat were shortlisted and nominated from the respective districts. While congratulating the awardees, Imti clarified that the nomination/selection did not undermine role of other doctors who were also tirelessly working, adding the awards were meant to encourage all doctors equally. Stressing that observation, reason, human understanding, courage and faith made a physician, she encouraged the doctors to wear the white coat with dignity, pride and humbleness and taking the profession as a privilege to serve the people for, only a doctor was bestowed with the ability heal others and was the

She claimed that, as frontline workers, the doctors had been working tirelessly to ensure the safety of patients by putting their own lives at risk during the Covid-19 pandemic and working roundthe-clock, missing out on their own personal breaks and family events many a times. Asserting that doctors’ role had become ever more demanding over the past two years following the outbreak of the pandemic, Joyce admitted that a single day alone was not enough to express gratitude. Nonetheless, this will help raise awareness in a layman not to forget the doctor who helped him fight his battle, she added. She reminded the citizens that doctors deserved to be respected and treated with kindness for the challenges they faced every day as she

doctors and politicians took oath, Ozukum however pointed out that a mistake of a politician could be rectified, but a mistake of a doctor could claim a human life. He urged them to be more dedicated and sincere in their services and experience the joy of having the privilege to serve the needy people. Sharing the significance of the day, Nagaland Medical Council (NMC) president Dr Joyce Angami said Doctors’ Day was observed on different days across the world to appreciate and recognise the role of doctors in society. She mentioned that Doctors’ Day was celebrated in India on July 1 every year to commemorate Dr Bidhan Chandra Roy’s contribution towards the advancement of medical science in the country and also show gratitude to doctors for their efforts in

He also suggested creating Public Parks and other utilities, which would improve the living standards of the people with a sense of responsibility in the districts. With the onset of monsoon, Rio urged DCs and line departments to immediately coordinate with DDMA and activate Incident Response Teams. Rio also informed the DCs to be very careful and sensitive in dealing with Census Operation to avoid mistakes and also create awareness regarding COVID-19. In his concluding remark, the chief minister urged DCs to build a good and cordial relationship with tribal hohos, CSOs, NGOs, Churches, and politicians of the district to take the districts forward. The programme was chaired by commissioner Nagaland, Rovilatuo Mor. The activities of the daylong programme on the first day included a review of law and order matters/issues with participation of DGP, review of aadhaar, border affairs, land records, village councils, and GBs, CAWD, state election commission and review on establishment matters including rationalization of DBs. OTTAWA, JUL 1 (IANS): Canada’s Chief Public Health Officer Theresa Tam has confirmed a total of 278 cases of monkeypox in the country as of June 29. The cases had been reported nationally, including four cases from British Columbia, five from Alberta, 67 from Ontario and 202 from Quebec, the top doctor said on Thursday. Tam reiterated that the risk of exposure to monkeypox virus is not exclusive to any group or setting, Xinhua news agency reported. Anyone, no matter their gender or sexual orientation, could get infected and spread the virus if they come into close contact with someone who has monkeypox or have direct contact with their personal or shared objects, including towels or bed linens, she warned. According to Tam, the latest epidemiological data show that the majority of the cases are male and range between 20 and 69 years of age. Monkeypox is a sylvatic zoonosis that may cause infections in humans and the disease usually occurs in forested parts of Central and West Africa. It is caused by the monkeypox virus which belongs to the orthopoxvirus family, according to the World Health Organisation.
In Northern Ireland, infections rose to an estimated 71,000 people, or one in 25, up from 59,900, or one in 30. In Scotland, which has had the highest Covid rates in the UK since the end of May, the rise in infections may be slowing slightly. The latest statistics are the highest estimate for total infections since late April, but still below the record high of 4.9 million, which was reached at the end of March.
The City Bus Owners Union Kohima (CBOUK) informs the public that, due to the time lapse since the last rate fixation and the rise in fuel prices. The City Bus fare will increase from 4th of July 2022 (Monday) and the rates are as follows. 1. Kezieke to Tinpatti Rs. 10 2. Tinpatti to H.S Junction Rs. 10 3. Tinpati to Razhü Point Rs.10 4. Razhü Point to Phoolbari Rs. 10 5. Phoolbari to PHQ Rs. 10 6. Razhü Point to PHQ Rs. 20 7. PHQ to Town, Kezieke Rs. 20 8. Kezieke to HS Junction Rs. 20 9. PHQ to Lerie Rs. 20 The revised rate was approved by the Regional Transport Authority (RTA) and Deputy Commissioner Kohima and Chairman, RTA Kohima after considering several factors, including rising fuel costs, maintenance costs and other expenses. The CBOUK also informs that: 1. 50% concession of fare for students in full uniform during school hours. 2. Renewal fee of city buses is extended till 15th July 2022 The CBOUK also reminds its drivers to strictly abide by the traffic rules and regulations. LONDON, JUL 1 (PTI): The number of people in the UK with COVID-19 has risen by around 32 per cent in a week to almost 2.3 million due to fast-spreading Omicron sub-variants, according to official data released in London on Friday. The Office for National Statistics (ONS) weekly statistics are based on swabs collected from randomly selected households and show that in the week ending June 25 there was a rise in coronavirus cases in all parts of the United Kingdom. The Omicron variant sub-types named BA.4 and BA.5 are likely to be behind the latest surge. “Across the UK we’ve seen a continued increase of over half a million infections, likely caused by the growth of BA.4 and BA.5 variants,” said Sarah Crofts, ONS head of analytical outputs for the COVID-19 infection survey. “This rise is seen

decision to bat first after winning the toss did not yield the desired result. Seasoned off-spinner Deepti (three for 25) and medium pacer Renuka Singh (three for 29) were the wreckers-in-chief. Renuka gave the team’s first breakthrough when she removed Sri Lankan skipper Chamari Athapaththu with a peach of a delivery that landed in the channel outside off, forcing the batter to fish at it, and Yastika Bha-
tia did the rest behind the stumps. It was a huge wicket for India, and straightaway put the host on the backfoot. Deepti enjoyed early success when she dismissed Hansima Karunaratne for an eleven-ball duck. Seeking to break the shackles, the batter went down the track to a delivery that was tossed up, but the lack of elevation meant the ball did not travel beyond mid off. A partnership ensued but not for long, with Deepti getting the bet-
ter of opener Hasini Perera by hitting her pads while the batter attempted to play the sweep shot. Hasini made 37 off 54 balls. Sri Lanka were in for more shock as 63/3 soon became 65/4, this time skipper Harmanpreet, enjoying success with the ball by dismissing Kavisha Dilhari for a nought. As wickets tumbled at one end, Nilakshi de Silva held fort at the other until she was trapped in front of the wicket for a 63-ball 43. The Indians also got off to a poor start, losing Smriti Mandhana (4) as early as the second over. Wicketkeeper Bhatia (1), too, did not last long, leaving India at 17 for two in the fourth over. Brief scores: Sri Lanka women: 171 all out in 48.2 overs (Nilakshi de Silva 43, Hasini Perera 37, Deepti Sharma 3/25, Renuka Singh 3/29) India Women: 176/6 in 38 overs (Harmanpreet Kaur 44, Shafali Verma 35, Harleen Deol 34, Deepti Sharma 22 not out, Pooja Vastrakar 21 not out; Inoka Ranaweera 4/39).

The 34-year-old Lyon took four wickets as Sri Lanka were bundled out for 113 in the second innings leaving Australia with the task of scoring just five runs for victory. The visitors completed the formality in only the fourth ball of the first over. M e a n w h i l e, Ly o n moved into outright 10th on the all-time Test wickettakers’ list and joined the likes of Sri Lanka’s Muttiah Muralitharan, India’s Anil Kumble and Ravichandran Ashwin and the late Australian spin legend Shane Warne. Ravichandran Ashwin. Backing up his 5/90 on day one after Sri Lanka won the toss and elected to bat, Lyon was equally devastating on day three, as the hosts’ plan to counter-attack backfired. Dimuth Karunaratne’s side could only bat 22.5 overs in their second innings, the shortest completed innings in their Test history, as Lyon claimed four scalps. Karunaratne him-
self was Lyon’s first of the four, with his bottom edge pouched by Alex Carey. Kusal Mendis’ top edge fell to Mitchell Swepson for Lyon’s second, before claiming Ramesh Mendis to move to 435 Test wickets. NEW DELHI, JUL 1 (PTI): The experienced Deepti Sharma shone with the bat after her exploits with the ball, coming to the Indian women’s team’s rescue in a tricky chase for a four-wicket win over Sri Lanka in the first ODI here on Friday. In the company of Pooja Vastrakar (21 not out), Deepti (22 not out) guided the team home in 38 overs after being set an easy target of 172, in Harmanpreet Kaur’s first match as fulltime ODI captain. Cruising at 123 for three, India nearly made heavy weather of what seemed a comfortable runchase after Harmanpreet departed for a well-made 44, slipping to 138 for six. But Deepti and Vastrakar ensured India emerged winner. The three-match series is part of the ICC ODI Championship. Harmanpreet took over the reins in the 50-over format after the recent retirement of longtime skipper Mithali Raj. Thanks to the Indian bowlers’ excellent show in the series opener, Sri Lanka’s

Diamond League: Neeraj breaks ntl record
Neeraj Chopra reacts after setting a new national record and his personal best. (PTI)
NEW DELHI, JUL 1 (IANS): Continuing his brilliant form, Olympic champion Neeraj Chopra broke the national record again with a throw of 89.94m to finish second in the Stockholm Diamond League 2022 in Sweden on Thursday. The Indian javelin ace fell just six centimetres short of the elusive 90m mark but he bettered his personal best of 89.30m, set earlier this month at the Paavo Nurmi Games in Finland. World champion Anderson Peters of Grenada broke the 16-year-old meet record with a huge 90.31m throw in his third attempt, which was enough to get him the top spot. World No 4 Julian Weber of Germany finished third with an effort of 89.08m. Jakub Vadlejch, the 2016 Diamond League champion, was fourth after Julian pipped him with his penultimate throw. After the record-breaking first throw, Chopra logged 84.37m, 87.46m, 84.77m and 86.67m in his subsequent attempts and was one of the top three athletes who made it to the sixth attempt. However, the 24-year-old Indian could only come up with 86.84m in his final throw
and finished behind Anderson Peters. “Today, I feel good and after the first throw, I thought I could throw even over the 90m today. But it is OK as I have more competitions coming this year. I am close to 90m now and I can throw it this year,” said Chopra. “Despite the fact that I did not win tonight, I feel very good because I did my best,” he added. This was Chopra’s eighth appearance in the Diamond League and his first top-three finish at the meet. He earned seven points for the secondplace finish in Stockholm and moved to fourth in the qualification standings of the Diamond League. The top six athletes at the end of all qualification meetings will compete at the Diamond League Final in Zurich this September. Earlier this month, Chopra had made an impressive return to competition after Tokyo 2020, breaking the national record with an 89.30m throw to clinch the silver at Paavo Nurmi Games before claiming gold at the Kuortane Games with an 86.69m throw. The Stockholm Diamond League was his last event before the World Athletics Championships and the Commonwealth Games in July.
Malaysia Open: Indian campaign ends with Sindhu, Prannoy’s loss in quarters
Liverpool’s Salah signs long-term contract extension
KUALA LUMPUR, JUL 1 (IANS): India’s campaign at the Malaysia Open BWF Super 750 badminton event came to an end after PV Sindhu and HS Prannoy lost their respective women’s and men’s singles quarterfinals at the Axiata Arena, here on Friday. Former world champion Sindhu was knocked out of the tournament after losing her women’s singles quarterfinals 21-13, 15-21, 13-21 to world No 2 Tai Tzu Ying of Chinese Taipei in 53 minutes. Ace Indian shuttler, playing against the drift in the first game, started slow and trailed 5-2 after the early exchanges. However, she soon found her footing by winning nine of the next 11 points to go into the break leading 11-7. World No 7 kept her grip on the match despite Tai engaging in longer rallies. The Indian shuttler went on to clinch the opening game convincingly.
LONDON, JUL 1 (REUTERS): Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah has signed a long-term contract extension at the club, the Premier League side said on Friday. Liverpool did not provide details but Sky Sports reported that the Egypt international had signed a deal until 2025. “I feel great and (I am) excited to win trophies with the club. It’s a happy day for everyone,” Salah said in a statement on the club website. “It takes a little bit of time, I think, to renew, but now everything is done so we just need to focus on what’s next. “I think you can see in the last five or six years the team was always going (upwards). Last season we were close to winning four, but unfortunately in the last week of the season we lost two trophies.” Salah scored 23 league goals for Liverpool last season to share the Premier League golden boot with Tottenham Hotspur’s Son Heung-min.

The 26-year-old Sindhu, looking to break the five-match losing streak against the Tokyo 2020 silver medallist, began the second game with equal intensity. However, Tai soon had Sindhu on the backfoot and led 11-3 at the break. Trailing 14-3, Indian unleashed a series of powerful smashes to reduce the gap to 17-15. However, Tai regrouped quickly to take the next six points. The 28-year-old Tai then put Sindhu under pressure with
a mix of drop shots and smashes in the final game to keep her title defence on track. This was Sindhu’s sixth straight loss to Tai and 16th defeat in 21 matches. Sindhu, a twotime Olympic medallist, had lost to Tai Tzu Ying in the Tokyo 2020 semi-finals. Meanwhile, World No 21 Prannoy also lost 18-21, 16-21 against world No 8 Jonatan Christie in the men’s singles quarterfinals, later in the day.

Ind Vs Eng 5th Test: Pant scripts India fight back with superb ton BIRMINGHAM, JUL 1 (AGENCIES): Rishabh Pant led India’s fightback by smashing his fifth Test century on Day 1 of the ongoing rescheduled fifth Test against England at Edgbaston. Pant scored a counterattacking century off just 89 balls as India managed to recover from a top-order collapse. At the time of filing this report, India were 321/6 with Ravindra Jadeja batting on 68 not out and Shardul Thakul on 1. Pant departed on 146 from 111 balls. The 24-year-old hit 15 boundaries and a six en route the 100-run mark. With India reeling at 98 for five, Pant and Ravindra Jadeja stitched an unbeaten partnership for the sixth wicket and took India past the 200-run mark. This was the fastest century by an Indian wicketkeeper in Tests. Pant also crossed the 2,000-run mark in Tests during his swashbuckling knock as he frustrated England bowlers. Fastest century by an Indian wicketkeeper in Tests over 100 runs with Ravindra Jadeja, who hit a half-century of his own, came at a crucial juncture, with James Anderson and Matthew Potts sharing five wickets between them to leave India reeling at 98/5. Anderson got openers Shubman Gill and Cheteshwar Pujara and then Shreyas Iyer, while Matthew Potts sent Hanuma Vihari and Virat Kohli packing. Earlier, England had opted to win the toss and opted to bowl. Jasprit Bumrah is captaining India in the
match, with regular skipper Rohit Sharma ruled out with COVID-19 and vice-captain KL Rahul out with injury. Virat Kohli-led India had taken a 2-1 lead in the series last year before the fifth Test was postponed due to a Covid outbreak in the visitors’ camp. Pant, the vice-captain in this Test match, chose to promote himself ahead of Shreyas Iyer and stabilise the innings, however, that went in vain after Virat Kohli edged a ball back into his own stumps.

LONDON, JUL 1 (REUTERS): Novak Djokovic clinically disposed of fellow Serb Miomir Kecmanovic as he continued his relentless pursuit of a fourth successive Wimbledon title with a 6-0 6-3 6-4 victory on Friday. The top seed was unplayable in the opening set of his third-round match on Centre Court, taking it in 24 minutes. Kecmanovic, seeded 25, received the biggest
cheer of the day when he finally got on the scoreboard after 35 minutes by taking a long service game. Ons Jabeur was kept on court for more than hour - but only just - as the speedy Tunisian dispatched former junior number one Diane Parry 6-2, 6-3 on Friday to reach the fourth round. The world number two has shown little mercy during her progress to the third round, spending less than two hours on court. Had she not been broken by Parry when serving for the first set at 5-0 up, she would have made it into the last 16 in less than three hours on court during the first five days of the grasscourt major. That break not only earned 19-year-old Parry, one of four Frenchwomen to reach the third round, a rousing ovation from the Centre Court crowd but boosted her confidence as she raised her game to hit some sublime one-handed backhand winners. Watson, 30, has slipped to 121st in the world rankings and fourth in Britain and although she has tasted notable success in doubles, she has never been able to sustain a challenge in singles at the top level, her best Wimbledon performances being reaching the third round three times.
FIFA to use automated technology for offside calls at WC State Taekwondo players compete in ntl meet
DUBAI, JUL 1 (AP): FIFA will introduce new technology to improve offside calls at the World Cup in Qatar this year, using a limb-tracking camera system. FIFA said Friday it is ready to launch semiautomated offside technology (SAOT) that uses multiple cameras to track player movements plus a sensor in the ball — and will quickly show 3D images on stadium screens at the tournament to help fans understand the referee’s call. Goal-line technology was ready for the 2014 tournament in Brazil after a notorious refereeing error in 2010. In 2018, video review to help referees judge game-changing incidents was rolled out in Russia. The new offside system promises faster and more accurate decisions than are currently made with the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) system, even though the 2018 World Cup avoided major mistakes on offside calls. Controversy has since flared in European leagues, especially where VAR officials draw on-screen lines over players for marginal calls. They have been mocked as “armpit offsides”

because of the tiny margins. “Although these tools are quite accurate, this accuracy may be improved,” said Pierluigi Collina, who leads FIFA’s refereeing program and worked the 2002 World Cup final in the pretechnology era. Each stadium in Qatar will have 12 cameras beneath the roof synchronized to track 29 data points on each player’s body 50 times per second. Data is processed with artificial intelligence to create a 3D offside line that is alerted to
the team of VAR officials. A sensor in the match ball tracks its acceleration and gives a more precise “kick point” -- when the decisive pass is played – to align with the offside line data, FIFA innovation director Johannes Holzmüller said in an online briefing. Ensuring soccer’s biggest event is a showcase for technological progress — and avoids obvious errors that live on in World Cup lore — has been a long-time FIFA goal. The shot by England’s
Frank Lampard that crossed the Germany goal-line in 2010 but was not given as a goal almost immediately ended then-president Sepp Blatter’s opposition to giving referees technological aids. Later that same day in South Africa, a clearly incorrect offside call let Carlos Tevez score Argentina’s first goal in a 3-1 win over Mexico in the round of 16. In 2014, Bosnia-Herzegovina failed to advance from the group in its first World Cup after Edin Dzeko’s early goal against Ni-
geria was wrongly judged offside. Nigeria went on to win 1-0. FIFA’s push to get the new offside technology ready for the World Cup was slowed by the COVID-19 pandemic. Live in-game trials were run at the Arab Cup in Qatar last December and FIFA’s Club World Cup played in February in the United Arab Emirates. Within seconds of a possible offside, a specialist member of the VAR team can manually check the data-created line for attackers and defenders and the kick point of the pass, Holzmüller said. It falls to the senior VAR official to alert the match referee of the right decision by their audio link. That should take from 20 to 25 seconds compared to an average of 70 seconds currently for a complex offside call. “Sometimes the length of checks of reviews is definitely too long,” Collina said, acknowledging delays disrupt the flow of games. “For (VAR officials) time flies, but for the rest — for coaches, for players, for spectators — it’s completely different.”
