Himanta meets Rio, CCoNPI

Staff Reporter

DIMAPUR, JUN 2 (NPN): Assam chief minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma arrived Dimapur Thursday to hold a consultative meeting with the Core Committee on Naga Political Issue (CCoNPI) headed by chief minister Neiphiu Rio and to acquaint himself with the latest development following the May 28 meeting between CCoNPI and NSCN(I-M). Sarma, as convenor of North East Democratic Alliance (NEDA) has been co-opted by the union home ministry to act as a “catalyst” to the efforts of the “facilitators” (the political leadership of the UDA government) for supplementing efforts towards early solution to the Naga political issue. On the eve of his trip to Dimapur, Sarma had clarified to media that his role was “limited” and would not be able to “mediate in such a

NASSA two-day ‘pen down strike’ on June 3 & 4 DIMAPUR, JUN 2 (NPN): Nagaland Assembly Secretariat Staff Association (NASSA) Thursday announced that as part of its first phase agitation, the members would be holding two-day “pen down strike” from June 3-4, 2022. In a press release, NASSA general secretary Talirenla said the proposed strike was to register protest against the state government appointing Dr. PJ Antony (retired officer) as principal secretary, under the establishment of the NLA secretariat. On Wednesday, the NASSA alleged that Dr. PJ Antony had “unilaterally” amended the existing Service Rules to suit his interest of service extension by inserting a provision where a superannuated officer can be appointed on deputation in the Assembly Secretariat till the age of 65 years. NASSA said the whole exercise of amending the service rules was arbitrarily done without observing any procedural norms and guidelines and without consulting any senior administrative officers or the Service Rules Amendment Committee, constituted with a mandate to make recommendation for revision/amendment of the existing service rules. Though the Cabinet had approved creation of the post of principal secretary, NASSA said it strongly objected to the proposal of Antony being made the principal secretary.

big and complex issue”. Sarma said: “At the political level and with the political leadership of BJP, NDPP and NPF, we keep on talking because all are within the NEDA. So, my role is limited only to interacting with our NEDA partners and not beyond.” The Naga political issue is perched at a crucial stage as expectation for solution has been prolonged due to a stalemate between the government of India and NSCN (I-M) over the issue of Naga flag and con-

stitution (Yehzabo). While the government of India has rejected outright both demands, the NSCN (I-M) insists, that the Framework Agreement it signed with the government of India’s then Interlocutor R.N. Ravi on August 3, 2015 was inclusive of flag and constitution. The closed-door meeting between Sarma and the CCoNPI members led by its convenor and Nagaland chief minister Neiphiu Rio held at Niathu Resort Chümoukedima, lasted around 45 minutes and media was

barred from venturing even close to the venue. Sources privy to the meeting however, told Nagaland Post, that there was free and frank exchange between the participants. The core issue was on the need to break the deadlock that has been impeding early solution to the Naga political issue. The sources also said that Sarma as Convenor of NEDA will also convey to the Centre, the suggestions of CCoNPI. The sources also disclosed that Sarma had conveyed to the Core Committee to “work harder to convince and make NSCN (I-M) understand and accept Government of India’s offer.” Being a complex and sensitive issue, Sarma was of the view that no other person should comment on the Naga issue as every statement could complicate the matter.

Further, RPP pointed out that 100% pass percentage of government schools decreased to 12 in 2022 from 25 in 2021. Maintaining that UDA coalition should be “thoroughly ashamed”, RPP said the UDA ministers and MLAs were busy “chasing central schemes” and shuttling between Nagaland and Delhi. However, on the home front, RPP said the school education department “dished out its worst

Abolish post of PD school education: RPP DIMAPUR, JUN 2 (NPN): Rising People’s Party (RPP) has demanded abolishing of the post of principal director, department of school education (DoSE). In a press release, RPP alleged that PD post was “specifically created” by the cabinet to do their “khushikhushi” in the department by bringing in ‘flexible’ and ‘servile’ administrative officers. RPP said that the result of “this policy is as clear as daylight now.” Stating that the schools had their worst performance in six years, RPP said the government schools pass percentage in HSLC 2022

RPP said there was no point in keeping IAS officers as PD since there was also a commissioner and secretary in the department, who was also from the IAS cadre. “Their service can be utilized elsewhere. Why have too many power centers in a department and spoil the broth when it’s ultimately the students who will suffer?” RPP stated. The party maintained that education department should be headed by departmental cadre officers, who have a passion for the student community.

Sonia Gandhi tests positive for Covid-19 India could face export ban for buying Russian oil

Sonia Gandhi

NEW DELHI, JUN 2 (PTI): Congress President Sonia Gandhi on Thursday tested positive for COVID-19 and has isolated herself, the party said. Congress chief spokesperson Randeep Surjewala said she had developed a mild fever on Wednesday evening and was found COVID positive on testing this

morning. Surjewala, however, asserted that she is determined to appear before the ED on June 8. He said the Congress President has been meeting leaders and activists over the last week, some of whom have been found COVID positive. “As a large number of Congressmen and women and well-wishers have expressed concern, we want to say that she is fine and recovering. We thank everyone for their good wishes,” he also said. The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has summoned Sonia Gandhi and her son Lok Sabha

MP Rahul Gandhi to appear before it on June 8 in connection with a money laundering case linked to the National Herald newspaperAJL issue. S u r j ewa l a s a i d h e hoped the Congress chief will recover in the next few days and will again get herself tested before her appearance before the ED. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and a host of Congress leaders have wished Gandhi a speedy recovery. “Wishing Congress President Smt. Sonia Gandhi Ji a speedy recovery from COVID-19,” Modi tweeted.

LAUNCESTON (AUSTRALIA), JUN 2 (AGENCIES): Indian oil refiners are sucking up cheap Russian crude, but the risk is that their exports of refined products will eventually attract sanctions from countries determined to cut Russian energy out of global markets, reports the Reuters. Imports of Russian crude by India hit a record high in May, and will likely rise again in June, according to data compiled by commodity analysts Kpler. India imported 840,645 barrels per day (bpd) of Russian crude in May, up from 388,666 bpd in April and

136,774 bpd in May last year, Kpler data showed. June imports are estimated at 1.05 million bpd, meaning that Russia’s share of India’s total imports will rise to just under one quarter, a dramatic spike considering that they were around 2% of the total last year. Indian refiners are happy to buy heavily discounted Russian crude, which is being offered at up to $40 a barrel below benchmark Brent crude prices. Russia’s crude exports have been targeted by Western countries as part of sanctions aimed at punish-

Centre proposes to amend social media rules NEW DELHI, JUN 2 (PTI): The Centre plans to set up an appellate committee to look into appeals filed by individuals against the decisions of grievance officers of social media platforms. Besides, the panel has to dispose of the appeals within 30 days of receiving them and its decision will be binding on the intermediaries or the large social media companies concerned, according to a notification to amend the Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021. The proposed move assumes significance against

the backdrop of instances of accounts, including that of celebrities, being blocked by social media platforms such as Twitter for alleged violation of respective community guidelines. “The central government shall constitute one or more Grievance Appellate Committees, which shall consist of a Chairperson and such other Members, as the central government may, by notification in the official gazette,” the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (Meity) said in the draft notification. The aggrieved person can appeal against the decision of the grievance officer concerned before the com-

mittee within 30 days of receipt of the order. “The Grievance Appellate Committee shall deal with such appeal expeditiously and shall make an endeavour to dispose of the appeal finally within 30 calendar days from the date of receipt of the appeal. Every order passed by the Grievance Appellate Committee shall be complied with by the concerned intermediary,” the draft notification said. The committee will provide an alternate grievances redressal mechanism but the complainant will also have the right to seek judicial remedy on the grievance at any point of time,

as per the draft notification issued on June 1. The rules for social media companies came into effect from May 26, 2021. It mandated large social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter to enable identification of the ‘first originator’ of the information that undermines the sovereignty of India, the security of the state, or public order. Under the rules, significant social media intermediaries -- those with over 50 lakh users -- are required to appoint a grievance officer, a nodal officer and a chief compliance officer. These personnel have to be residents in India. As per the draft notifi-

cation, intermediaries have to acknowledge suspension, removal or blocking of any user or user account or any complaint from its users in the nature of request for removal of information or communication link within 24 hours and dispose of the complaint within 15 days. In the case of any complaints in the nature of request for removal of information or communication link carrying defamatory, obscene, pornographic, invasive of another’s privacy, libellous, false and untrue information, those should be redressed within 72 hours of the reporting, according to the draft notification.

ing Moscow for its Feb. 24 invasion of Ukraine. The risk for India’s refiners is that buyers of their refined product exports start to target these cargoes, given the possibility that some of the diesel or gasoline was refined out of Russian crude. India’s Reliance Industries is a case in point. It operates a 1.2 million bpd refinery complex at Jamnagar on India’s west coast and while it does supply fuel to the domestic market, much of the output is exported. The port of Sikka handles Reliance’s crude imports, and Kpler data shows

that 10.81 million barrels of Russian crude arrived in May, or about 348,000 bpd. The same port exported 2.0 million barrels of diesel, or about 64,500 bpd, to Australia in May, according to Kpler. Australia imposed a ban on imports of Russian oil and refined products on March 11, which came into force on April 24. It’s not clear whether the ban applies to fuel refined from Russian crude in a third country, such as India. But it’s likely that the Australian government is going to be asked these questions.

NPCC reiterates demand for ballot paper system in polls

DIMAPUR, JUN 2 (NPN): Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee (NPCC) said it would continue to demand ballot paper system wherein VVPAT printout would be used as ballot paper, thus reducing costs as control unit would no longer be needed. Addressing the State level workshop to discuss and plan execution of the ‘Udaipur Nav Sankalp Declaration’ with office-bearers, members, frontals and cells at Congress Bhavan, Kohima, NPCC president K Therie said the party would take up the issue with Election Commission of India (Cont’d on p-8) (ECI) after its reply to a

representation filed by a group of NGOs. Drawing attention of party workers to the issue of nearly 19 lakh missing EVMs, he attributed Congress’ losses to EVM manipulation. He said BJP with barely 35% of votes was able to rule the country because other political parties were unable to put up a united alternative. He mentioned that the basis for Congress’ fight was “Justice for all’, claiming that Congress being the party that drafted the Constitution of India, understood its application, while other parties, including regional p a r t i e s, (Cont’d on p-8) K Y M C

Assam CM’s wife refutes PPE kits scam

Members of APCC wearing PPE kits demand probe by CBI and ED into PPE kit scam. (PTI) was placed with JCB Industries, owned by Bhuyan. Despite no history of procuring medical supplies, the company was given the order by National Health Mission-Assam without following tendering process, the report claimed said. CM Sarma was the state health minister at that time.

“A website called The Wire has come out with an unfounded accusation with regard to my supply of PPE kits to the NHM,” Bhuyan said in an official statement posted on Twitter. She said that in the first week of the Covid-19 pandemic in March 2020, “not a single PPE kit was

available in Assam”. Taking cognisance of it, she reached out to a business acquaintance and delivered around 1,500 PPE kits to NHM-Assam “with a lot of effort”. “I wrote to NHM to treat the same as part of my corporate social responsibility. I did not take a single penny out of this supply. I have always been transparent in my belief of giving back to the society, irrespective of my husband’s political standing,” her statement read. To back her claims, she also attached a letter of appreciation issued to JCB Industries by NHMAssam mission director S Lakshmanan on 27 March 2020, in which he extended his “heartfelt gratitude” for the supply of 1,485 PPE kits.

The judgement, pronounced by Assam REAT Chairperson Justice (Retd) Manojit Bhuyan and Member Onkar Kedia, also said that this may cause prejudice to home buyers and may have far-reaching adverse consequences insofar as home buyers are concerned. “The Tribunal also noted that in the Guwahati Building Byelaws of 2014, there is no format prescribed for issuing Occupancy Certificate by the Authority concerned. This also needs to be addressed by the appropriate authority,” Assam REAT said in a statement. In the same judgement, the Assam REAT asked the RERA, Assam, to remove difficulties faced by builders in registering their ongoing projects.

G U WA H AT I , J U N 2 (PTI): The Assam Real Estate Appellate Tribunal (REAT) on Thursday called for plugging some lacunae in the Guwahati Building Byelaws of 2014 to protect the interests of home buyers. Delivering its judgement on two appeals filed by three entities against the Real Estate Regulatory Authority (RERA), the Assam REAT pointed out that the byelaws of 2014 are “absolutely silent” about the role of the competent authority in certifying the completion report. The completion report is mandatorily required to be submitted by builders in prescribed formats. CPI-M alleges political violence by BJP in Tripura

AGARTALA, JUNE 2 (IANS): The CPI-M on Thursday claimed that political violence sponsored by the ruling BJP in Tripura has crossed all limits and even the ailing and injured people are not being spared. The opposition party said that ruling party members and goons also attacked patients in the hospital and doctors’ chambers. The CPI-M leaders alleged that after the announcement of the June 23 bypolls to the four assembly seats in Tripura, political violence has increased in different parts of the state. CPI-M Tripura state secretary Jitendra Chowdhury said that fearing defeat in the by-elections, the BJP workers led by their leaders have been attacking the CPI-M leaders and workers in more than 12 places in Dhalai, West Tripura and South Tripura districts dur-

Jitendra Chowdhury ing the past one week. “At Rajnagar (in south Tripura) and Mohanpur (in west Tripura), the BJP workers led by their leaders attacked the ailing and injured people in the hospital and doctors’ chambers. In most cases police remained as wooden dolls,” Chowdhury, former Forest and Tribal Welfare Minister, told the media. The CPI-M state Secretary, party leaders Sudhan Das and Ratan Das, said that in the series of attacks during the past week more

than 20 people were injured, some of them seriously and many properties including rubber sheets were looted by the BJP activists. “In Mohanpur, the BJP workers armed with sophisticated weapons attacked the houses belonging to CPI-M workers and members and carried out violence for more than five hours on May 31. The security personnel remained inactive even after being informed,” the Left leader said. Chowdhury, who also submitted detailed written complaint elaborating all the violent incidents to the Chief Electoral Officer and the Director General of Police, said that a total anarchy is prevailing in the state. “In some cases, women and girls came forward to prevent the BJP goons from attacking their male family members,” the CPI-M leader said.

BJP to support NPP govt Mnp Cong’s brainstorming session concludes till its full term: Shullai Correspondent

Correspondent

SHILLONG, JUNE 2: Meghalaya’s lone BJP minister Sanbor Shullai on Thursday said the party would continue to support the National People’s Party (NPP)-led government till it completes its full term. However, NPP State president and Rajya Sabha member, Wanweiroy Kharlukhi dared the BJP to pull out of the coalition government. Shullai’s statement is significant after State BJP president Ernest Mawrie had said, all BJP workers have expressed their willingness to pull out from the coalition over the alleged large scale corruption in the government. Mawrie has been critical of the alleged illegal coal mining and transportation and has also raised concern about alleged scam in the power department. The latest objection was the collapse of the dome in the under construction Assembly building and shoddy con-

struction of the Inter State Bus Terminus in Shillong. Mawrie and others demanded an independent probe into the infrastructure collapse. “All grievances raised by the party president will be addressed by the Chief Minister Conrad Sangma,” Shullai said, adding that in coalition politics such issues are raised by concerned coalition partners and this is nothing new in politics. “Coalition partners should come forward to address such issues to instill confidence among the stakeholders,” the BJP legislator, who holds the Labour department, said. On the other hand, the NPP has termed the BJP’s threat to pull out of the government as “paper tiger”. “We have had enough of the BJP and their threat of withdrawing support. Do they really have the guts to do it,” NPP president Kharlukhi asked and further said, “If they (BJP) cannot work with the coalition then they should walk out.”

S H I L L O N G, J U N 2 (PTI): The Meghalaya government has informed the high court that 38 custodial deaths have been recorded in the state since 2012. A bench comprising Chief Justice Sanjib Banerjee and Justice H S Thangkhiew said that an exercise has to be carried out to ascertain which custodial deaths were unnatural. The court fixed a tentative amount of Rs 10 lakh as compensation for the next of kin of those inmates who died unnaturally in custody and said

the ex-gratia has to be increased if the deceased was aged below 40. The matter was on May 31 heard suo motu as a public interest litigation instituted by the HC following an order of the Supreme Court. The state government filed affidavits before the court mentioning the com-

plete list of people dying in custody since 2012. It said that notices have been sent to next of kin of the deceased as per a previous court order on May 2. “The figures furnished by the State indicate a total number of 38 custodial deaths in the State since 2012. DailyDevotion Are You Obsessed by Something? Who is the man that fears the Lord? —Psalm 25:12 Are you obsessed by something? You will probably say, “No, by nothing,” but all of us are obsessed by something— usually by ourselves, or, if we are Christians, by our own experience of the Christian life. But the psalmist says that we are to be obsessed by God. The abiding awareness of the Christian life is to be God Himself, not just thoughts about Him. The total being of our life inside and out is to be absolutely obsessed by the presence of God. A child’s awareness is so absorbed in his mother that although he is not consciously thinking of her, when a problem arises, the abiding relationship is that with the mother. In that same way, we are to “live and move and have our being” in God (Acts 17:28), looking at everything in relation to Him, because our abiding awareness of Him continually pushes itself to the forefront of our lives. If we are obsessed by God, nothing else can get into our lives— not concerns, nor tribulation, nor worries. And now we understand why our Lord so emphasized the sin of worrying. How can we dare to be so absolutely unbelieving when God totally surrounds us? To be obsessed by God is to have an effective barricade against all the assaults of the enemy. “He himself shall dwell in prosperity…” (Psalm 25:13). God will cause us to “dwell in prosperity,” keeping us at ease, even in the midst of tribulation, misunderstanding, and slander, if our “life is hidden with Christ in God” (Colossians 3:3). We rob ourselves of the miraculous, revealed truth of this abiding companionship with God. “God is our refuge…” (Psalm 46:1). Nothing can break through His shelter of protection.

round 20,000 of those who made it in the High School Leaving Certificate (HSLA) and Higher Secondary School Leaving Certificate (HSSLC) 2002 will be graduating from colleges and educational institutions after four to five years. However, after all the studies put in through the years, the future does not look bright for the would-be graduates. There are several thousand graduates, some specialized in a particular field and a few thousand post graduates but a majority are unemployed. The government is the main job giver in Nagaland in the absence of any major industry or trade activities. The investments in furthering education appears to have been in vain. Frustration has grown because more and more are not finding jobs and unfortunately, expose the desperate ones into taking up undesirable activities. However, the process and ultimate selection for appointments to various jobs is laden with deep suspicion of opaqueness. It is unfair that some candidates are chosen and given jobs because of whatever reasons. Unemployment is when there is no job and in the case with Nagaland as with many other states, there is a saturation of employees in the government. It may be noted that the figure of government employees as recorded officially in 2008-10 was at 1,10,000. It rose to 1,25,000 by 2010-11, then to 1,30,000 by 2012-13. According to unofficial estimates, there are around 1,40,000 government employees under the government’s roll. This is a little over 7.1 % of the state’s 19,80,602 population. In comparison, it may be noted that Manipur has 65,000 employees (population- 25,70,390);Sikkim has 35,000 (population- 6,19,000); Arunachal Pradesh has 45,000 (population- 13,82,611); Meghalaya has 55,000 (population- 29,64,007); Mizoram has 40,603 (population- 10,91,014) and Nagaland has 1,40,000 (population- 19,80,602). All these have only created a situation in Nagaland where appointments have been far in excess of requirement. According to official sources, the ‘excess’ number of employees in Nagaland is around 70,000; which is 50% of around 1,40,000 government employees. As per the definition of the 13th Finance Commission and based on its well defined parameters, the state has an excess of over 70,000 government employees. The figure of ‘excess’ employment is based on the recommendation of the 13th Finance Commission that the salary component ought to be well within 35% of the budget. People in Nagaland depend totally on the government and the state in return, depends on the centre. Skill development was seen as the panacea for high unemployment made worse due to over saturation in employment in the government. Imparting skills that are honed in for employment may not be the cure for the ailment because that many jobs are not available. To add to the problem, the state’s economy is on unsure ground, with no industries and restricted opportunities for investments in private enterprises owing to the feeling of insecurity. Unfortunately, the salary expenditure automatically increases and inversely decreases whatever left, for development. Roughly salaries eat up around 70% of the annual budget. That means little is left for development or a pittance for the state to allocate some 10% of major central projects as its share. A realistic planning, cutting expenditure and infusing growth-oriented policies and tackling those that have shackled growth calls could be the needed turnaround.

Cycling for achieving SDGs

ne of the best and easiest physical activities is to use a bicycle. Cycling benefits us all from different perspectives. Bicycling is a means of livelihood for many in rural, sub urban and even urban areas. We see the newspaper hawker delivering the newspaper to us in the morning on a bicycle. Though the situation is changing and we see people using motorcycles, the importance of the cycle is there amongst many. At the same time people are also using cycles as a means of physical activity. There is no doubt that regular physical activity of moderate intensity – such as walking, cycling, or doing sports – has significant benefits for health. At all ages, the benefits of being physically active outweigh potential harm, for example through accidents. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), safe infrastructure for walking and cycling is also a pathway for achieving greater health equity. For the poorest urban sector, who often cannot afford private vehicles, walking and cycling can provide a form of

T

he Nagas are on a collision course with destiny. Many troubling questions that have been festering in the minds of the stakeholders have deliberately been left unanswered by the NSCN (IM) resulting in undue mushrooming of negative speculations and distrust. The non-transparent nature of shrouding the core issues of the Indo-Naga peace process could lead to their downfall. To my mind, everything hinges on the common acceptable definition of what is being termed as “Shared sovereignty” to both the entities at the negotiating table. Once we are clear on this, everything else ought to smoothly fall in place. On the one hand the GoI, through its earlier Interlocutor Shri. R.N. Ravi, would have us believe that the parameter of discourse with NSCN (IM) was in line with “sharing sovereign authority” between the Center and the State in the like manner of the Federated Union of States within the Indian Constitution; On the other hand NSCN (IM) claims to have maintained a stand defining ‘Shared sovereignty’ as “Sharing of sovereign status as two separate independent entities” outside the Indian Constitution. This is like trying to mix oil and water. The pertinent question is: who is lying? The sequences of events that have transpired over the years along the rough road of discourse do tend to tell their own unbiased story. It would appear that most of the substantive ticklish issues had been ‘satisfactorily addressed’ to a conclusion in course of the 23 years of negotiation resulting in the signing of the “Framework Agreement” with so much ‘hoo haa’ on National Television. We witnessed the Prime Minister of India and Mr. Muivah clapping and shaking hands…beaming with contentment. It is inconceivable to think that a Prime Minister of India would happily present himself in a function where the very fabric of the Constitution of his own country is formally being put into the shredding ma-

transport while reducing the risk of heart disease, stroke, certain cancers, diabetes, and even death. One of the biggest contributions of the cycle is towards combating climate change as it is the most ecofriendly and one of the cheapest modes of transport for a shorter distance. Cycling is not only giving health benefits but it is also enhancing sustainable development around the world. The importance of bicycles has been acknowledged around the world and a special day has been designated as World Bicycle Day (WBD) which is observed on 3rd June. WBD draws attention to the benefits of using the bicycle — a simple, affordable, clean and environmentally fit sustainable means of transportation. The bicycle contributes to cleaner air and less congestion and makes education, health care and other social services more accessible to the most vulnerable populations. A sustainable transport system that promotes economic growth, reduces inequalities while bolstering the fight against climate change is critical to

chine under his watch… and then warmly shake hands with the shredder (Mr. Muivah). It defies common sense. Given this circumstance one is more inclined to conjecture that the NSCN (IM) perhaps must have conceded their concept of ‘sovereign status of two independent entities’ in line with Mr. R.N. Ravi’s definition of ‘shared sovereignty’. This perception is further accentuated by the official statement of Late Gen. (Retd) Khole Konyak, Chairman, GPRN/NSCN on 29th Feb 2012 during the Naga Consultative meeting. (Quote excerpt): “As the Alternative Political Arrangement being the ultimate desire of the Nagas living in the present state of Manipur, there is no reason why the Nagas living in the present state of Nagaland, Assam or Arunachal Pradesh should oppose such a concept. Leaders should not be branded traitors for adjusting to the inevitable circumstances presented by history and also by opposing political forces. GPRN/NSCN will appeal to the GoI to expedite the process for Alternative Arrangement since the Naga people in the present state of Manipur have suffered untold injustice and discrimination in every field. In the same manner the political status for Nagaland, Nagas living in Assam or Arunachal Pradesh should be left to the Naga people living in those areas. What is good for the Naga people living in particular area or region must be accepted by fellow Naga brethren living in other areas. Let our emotional bond be strengthened for greater purpose in future. Allow me to appreciate the honesty and courage of Mr. Th Muivah, General Secretar y of NSCN (IM), who, during the three day marathon meeting at Niathu Resort last year, facilitated by FNR, briefed the gathering and declared that Independence for the Naga Nation, in the present international context, was not possible so also on the issue of Integration of Naga inhabited areas in India and Myanmar. This shift of focus was not

achieving the Sustainable Development Goals. A c k n ow l e d g i n g t h e uniqueness, longevity and versatility of the bicycle, which has been in use for two centuries, and that it is a simple, affordable, reliable, clean and environmentally fit sustainable means of transportation, fostering environmental stewardship and health, the General Assembly decided to declare 3 June as WBD. The General Assembly of the United Nations welcomed initiatives to organize bicycle rides at the national and local levels as a means of strengthening physical and mental health and well-being and developing a culture of cycling in society. The day encouraged stakeholders to emphasize and advance the use of the bicycle as a means of fostering sustainable development, strengthening education, including physical education, for children and young people, promoting health, preventing disease, promoting tolerance, mutual understanding and respect and facilitating social inclusion and a culture of peace. According to the WHO

Global action plan on physical activity 2018–2030, physical activity has multiplicative health, social and economic benefits, and investment in policy actions to increase physical activity can contribute to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). There are multiple direct and indirect pathways, by which policies to promote physical activity through walking, cycling, sport, active recreation and play, support 13 of the SDGs. It is important for the government to invest in Pedestrians and Cyclists to encourage more usage of bicycles. There should be dedicated lanes which can be used by cyclists as that can be seen in many parts of the world but we need more of such things in our region. According to the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), investing in pedestrians and cyclists – who often make up the majority of citizens in a city - can save lives, help protect the environment and support poverty reduction. A collision course

Mr. Th Muivah’s fault but it was a practical reality, necessitated not because of the aggressive posture of the GoI but a realization that Naga nationalism must be evoked in the right spirit through practical wisdom as opposed to idealist view on Sovereignty and independence. To my understanding, in any future political arrangement, the greatest asset that we can pass on to the future Naga generations cohabiting with neighbouring nations and people is the emotional, social and cultural integration and inter-dependence among the Nagas.” (Unquote). The excerpt of this speech reproduced verbatim explicitly reveals the thinking process of our southern brothers yet again trying to find a solution that suits them best! It says it all! Read it one more time! With all due respect, let me first point out clearly that Late Gen. (Retd) Khole Konyak was not educationally competent enough to fluently compose his own speech. The thoughts expressed by him therefore can only be attributed as an official policy statement of Mr. Th Muivah himself at that given point in time, drafted by our highly educated ‘think tank’ Southern brothers… to just be parroted by the Chairman of GPRN/ NSCN who probably might have had difficulties pronouncing some of the bigger words…leave aside writing it. By all account it begins to appear more apparent that the whole discourse of NSCN (IM) for the past 23 years with the GoI before and up to the signing the Framework Agreement seems to have centered around a final settlement that would pave the way for our southern brothers to continue having a strangle hold on the Nagas of Nagaland…even if the final solution is within the Indian Constitution. As feeble an excuse as it may be for wanting to keep our emotional and cultural spirit alive to pursue the spillover subject of sovereignty and integration in the future through due democratic process could have been considered as a fair proposition had it not

R

been mired by the devious under current plans being conceived by our southern brothers in the form of Pan Naga Hoho with a draconian intent of perpetually controlling the destiny of the Nagas of Nagaland in the post solution era as has been explained in my latest article…”A COLLECTIVE STAND…NEED OF THE HOUR”. The questionable intrigue of NSCN (IM) goes on. Consider this factor in tune with Late Gen. Kholay Konyak’s speech that strongly suggests that the GoI in principle accepted the “Alternative Political Arrangement” concept by creating a separate “Autonomous Regional Territorial Council” for Nagas of Manipur and Arunachal Pradesh because NSCN (IM) was prepared to forego the issue of integration. We are as yet to hear our Southern brothers in the NSCN (IM) rejecting the creation of an “Autonomous Regional Territorial Council” for the Nagas of Manipur and Arunachal Pradesh thus far. This is an unambiguous confirmation of ground reality that integration is not going to be a part of the final solution. On the issue of “Naga Flag” the moot point that needs to be kept in mind is this: All sovereign Nations on planet earth have their own respective National Flags that comes as a natural protocol of Nationhood. Therefore, no independent Nation seeks for permission of another Nation to fly their Flag. In our case, the fact that NCSCN (IM) is determinedly fighting for a flag contradicts their very definition of shared sovereignty… which only confirms a subjective status within the Indian Constitution. If so, it defies all logic to be making an uncompromising stand “to the last man standing” for a ‘Naga Flag’ that fades into irrelevance in the absence of a full-fledged sovereignty and integration. Conversely, this symbolic “Naga Flag” planted in the State of Nagaland as a make believe Nation would formalize the concept of citizenship of all Nagas living beyond

eading about 150 bikers going round some sections of Nagaland in commemoration of the upcoming celebration of 150 years of Christianity in Nagaland with a theme ‘Clean Election Movement’ was a reminder of the early missionaries. When I took up my pastoral work in my village of Wokha in 1976 I used a Lambretta Scooter which made the old villagers call me ‘Andarshing missionary’. Later I came to know that Rev. Bengt Anderson of Impur or Zunheboto used to come to my village on a noisy bullet bike. Perhaps some more missionaries at that time used such bikes to reach the mountains of Naga Hills District (of Assam that time). Rev J.E. Tanquist with family served the longest as missionary to the Nagas (1912 – 1948). He spoke of his adventure with his son on bicycle between Kohima and Wokha sitting on it to descend and pushing it to ascend. He had a two-wheeler, not motored like the bullet bike but pedaled to reach places with the gospel. Mrs. Mary Clark among the Northern Nagas spoke of two legs (not wheels) of a Naga who carried her facing backward to descend the hills. She said she could almost touch the mountain as they descended. The purpose of the bikers was more important than their wheels – to make people aware of the importance of Clean and fair Election. Let us not take the event as a stereotypic phenomenon usually coming around such time but take it as God’s untiring reminder to lead us to repentance and do better than we had done so far. Clean and fair election alone can make us better Christians and not by prayer and fasting at the gate of corruption hall. Rev. Dr. Ezamo Murry, 5th Mile Dimapur

our State boundary and convert an un-integrated Nagaland into a common grazing ground for all. This is completely and totally unacceptable for the Nagas of Nagaland who now must vehemently and collectively stand up against it! Taking the discourse further to the “Yezahbo”: even if the GoI were to agree to induct an independent ‘Yezahbo’ within the Indian Constitution…this is a subject that can still generate a fierce controversy if NSCN (IM) tries to impose their present myopic communist Yezahbo…that they themselves practically spit upon by amassing personal wealth and landed proper ties through merciless extortion…on the stakeholders. If not, this is perhaps a fundamental area where the very identity and dignity of the Nagas could elaborately be expounded and affirmed without any empowerment ambiguity and ensure that the Indian Parliament does take undue advantage in the affairs of the Nagas. This is an area where the true spirit of “Shared sovereignty” could well be enshrined. Given such an option the Nagas could perhaps stand united… but here too NSCN (IM) needs to clarify its stand and intent clearly. NSCN (IM)’s stubborn non-disclosure stance is absolutely counterproductive… and could bring our house

down on us! In the midst of all this confusion and uncertainty our very own Core Committee (CC) of the Opposition-less Government is making a laughing stalk of themselves fumbling around aimlessly and trying to pass the uncomfortable buck to the Chief Minister of Assam… who in fact happens to be an integral part of the problem of integration concerning the Nagas of Assam. The CC has absolutely no clue about the competency clauses of the NSCN (IM) but have no courage to ask the NCSN (IM) to declare the same in the greater interest of the people they represent. With the election round the corner all politicians and political parties are treading very cautiously and silently, more concerned about winning their next innings by not antagonizing the NSCN (IM)…who will publically denounce the Indian election in the day time and fill their suitcases in the night in support of the highest bidding individual or party. For all practical purpose, the present Government is more or less the ‘oxygen facilitator’ of the NSCN (IM) even as they together take the stakeholders on a collision course with destiny. Khekiye K. have already beefed up the security in and around the Jamia masjid. They are also contemplating to clamp prohibitory orders from June 3 and extend it to June 4. Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) and Bajrang Dal leaders, who are at the forefront of the ‘Srirangapatna Chalo’ movement, have said that since the district authorities have not responded to their request, they are going ahead with their plan. The mosque authorities have already expressed apprehension and made appeals to the government to protect it. Built by Tipu Sultan in 1786-87, Jamia mosque is also called as Masjid-iAla and is located inside the Srirangapatna fort. The mosque has three inscriptions that mention nine

names of Prophet Mohammad. The Narendra Modi Vichar Manch organisation, which had made submissions to the authorities for survey of the mosque, said that they strongly believe that Jamia masjid was built after razing down a Hanuman temple. They quote B. Lewis Rice, a British historian, archaeologist and educationist, who in his report to the Archaeological Survey of India in 1935, had mentioned about a Hanuman temple on Page number 61.

and during a political crisis triggered by the rebellion of party leader Sachin Pilot and 18 MLAs close to him. The fresh move came after media baron Subhash Chandra, who is backed by the BJP, filed his nomination papers as an independent candidate for the Rajya Sabha polls. Chandra is currently a member of the Upper House of Parliament from Haryana and his term is going to expire on August 1. The filing of papers by him as an independent candidate had prompted Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot to allege that the BJP wants to indulge in horse trading. Gehlot made the statement as the ruling Congress with its 108 MLAs in the state Assembly is set to win two of the four seats. After winning two seats, the Congress will have 26 surplus votes, 15 short of the required 41 to win the third seat, which makes the support of Independent MLAs crucial. On the other hand, the BJP has 71 MLAs in the state Assembly and set to win one seat, after which it will be left with 30 surplus votes. Gehlot and the Congress candidates on Tuesday held a meeting with 10 of 13 independent MLAs in Rajasthan.

NEW DELHI, JUN 2 (PTI): Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Thursday held extensive talks with his Israeli counterpart Benjamin Gantz, focusing on evolving regional security scenarios and ways to further strengthen bilateral ties. The two sides adopted a ‘vision statement’ reaffirming their resolve to expand defence and military cooperation. Officials said the two ministers deliberated on the co-development and co-production of military equipment in sync with growing India-Israel strategic ties besides discussing geopolitical turmoil including the Ukraine crisis. Singh described the meeting with Gantz as “warm and productive” “Discussed key issues pertaining to defence cooperation and global and regional scenarios during the bilateral meeting. We place great value on our Strategic Partnership with Israel,” Singh tweeted. “Glad that both the countries adopted a ‘Vison Statement’ which will pave the way for defence cooperation in future. There is a broad consensus between both the countries on further strengthening the bilateral strategic and defence cooperation,” he added.

The overall situation in the Gulf region also figured in the talks, according to officials. Before the talks, Gantz paid tributes to India’s fallen soldiers at the National War Memorial. India has been a major buyer of Israel’s military hardware. Israel has been supplying various weapon

systems, missiles and unmanned aerial vehicles to India over the last few years but the transactions have largely remained behind the curtains. India procured a number of weapons and ammunition including Spike anti-tank guided missiles from Israel in the last couple of years.

MANDYA (KARNATAKA), JUNE 2 (IANS): Authorities in Karnataka are on high alert as some activists of Hindu organisations said that they will ‘enter’ Jamia masjid in the historical town of Srirangapatna in Mandya district, on June 4 and perform puja there. The Hindu organisations have also decided to approach the court to demand a survey of the masjid on the lines of Gyanvapi mosque. They have given calls on social media and in various events to participate in the ‘Srirangapatna Chalo’ programme. Sources said that the authorities are waiting for instructions from the government as to how to handle the devotees who may try to enter the masjid and perform ‘puja’ there. The district authorities

JAIPUR, JUN 2 (PTI): Around 40 Rajasthan Congress MLAs and some Independents left for a hotel in Udaipur as the party tries to keep its flock together before the June 10 Rajya Sabha elections. The MLAs boarded a luxury bus from the chief minister’s residence in the Civil Lines and left for Udaipur around 5 pm. The bus was escorted by a police team. The legislators and other leaders, who attended a state Congress workshop at a hotel in Jaipur, were called at Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot’s residence for lunch. After the lunch, the MLAs left for Udaipur in the bus. The party has decided to shift the MLAs to Udaipur fearing poaching by the BJP, which apart from fielding one official candidate is backing media baron Subhash Chandra, who has filed nomination as an Independent. The Cong ress has fielded three candidates. This is not the first time when the ruling Congress in the state has shifted its legislators to a hotel. The Congress decision reminds of two instances in 2020 when the party shifted its MLAs to a hotel ahead of the Rajya Sabha polls

MUMBAI, JUN 2 (PTI): Equity indices found firmer ground on Thursday after a two-day decline, buoyed by a rally in market heavyweight Reliance Industries and easing crude oil prices. Gujarat: Hardik Patel joins BJP in election year; says will work as ‘soldier’ under Modi

Gujarat BJP President C.R. Patil offers the party scarf to Hardik Patel as he joins BJP. (PTI) GANDHINAGAR, JUN 2 (PTI): Patidar leader Hardik Patel on Thursday joined the BJP in Gujarat, two weeks after quitting the Congress. T h e m ove c o m e s months ahead of the Gujarat Assembly elections, where the BJP seeks to retain power. Polls to the 182-member House are due by the end of this year. Speaking to reporters later, Patel, once a vocal critic of the BJP and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, said he joined the BJP without any expectation of getting a poll ticket and that he would serve as a “common worker” and “soldier” of the party. He also said that he left the Congress as it “does not respect people’s sentiments and distances itself from religious issues concerning crores of Hindus”. Patel, 28, was welcomed into the party fold by BJP’s Gujarat unit president C R Paatil and former deputy chief minister Nitin Patel. His induction cere-

mony took place at BJP’s state unit headquarters ‘Kamalam’ here. Pa t e l h a d g a i n e d prominence in 2015 after he led the agitation seeking reservation for the Patidar community in the state. He had joined the Congress in 2019 and was made the working president of its state unit in July 2020. However, he resigned from the party on May 18. Since then, speculation was rife that he might join the saffron party. On Tuesday, the BJP had announced that he would join the party on June 2. Speaking at a press conference after joining the ruling party, Patel said, “BJP works in the interest of the nation and I will work as a common worker. Congress doesn’t respect the sentiments of people. That party used to distance itself from religious issues concerning crores of Hindus. That is the reason why I left Congress. I urge leaders of other parties to join BJP and contribute to-

wards nation building.” The former Patidar quota spearhead claimed it was is “home coming” for him as his late father Bharatbhai Patel used to work for former Gujarat chief minister Anandiben Patel when she contested the Assembly poll from Mandal seat in 1990s. Replying to a question whether he joined the BJP to save himself from two sedition cases against him and prove himself to be a “deshbhakt” instead of a “deshdrohi”, Patel said he was always a patriot and would accept the court orders. “Even when I was in Congress, I had praised PM Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah for scrapping Article 370 and over the issue of Ram mandir,” he added.

Punjab to restore security of all protectees and VVIPs by June 7

The Punjab government on Thursday informed the Punjab and Haryana high court that the security of all the VVIP and protectees would be restored by June 7, reports

In his plea, the senior congress leader has sought directions to quash the order dated May 11 decategorising his security from Z category and withdrawal of the security personnel. He has sought directions to restore his security cover in view of threat to his life. Served as MLA from 1992 till 2022, the leader informed the HC that after the formation of the current AAP government, the Punjab Police has withdrawn security cover of 184 ex-ministers and former MLAs on pick and choose basis rather than actual threat perception. He said that the said withdrawal is a result of populist action being taken by the government instead of assessment of actual serious threat to the lives of these persons. On the other hand, the AAP government is providing Zplus security to its leaders as status symbol, including to the chief minister of Delhi, who are not residents of Punjab and have no threat perception.

Dissent in TN BJP over style of functioning of state president CHENNAI, JUNE 2 (IANS): Rumblings have commenced in Tamil Nadu unit of the BJP against the style of functioning of party state president K. Annamalai. Several senior leaders of the party and their supporters are antagonised with the state president raising his voice at seniors at the drop of a hat. Many leaders feel that being a former IPS officer Annamalai is trying to implement police culture in the saffron party of the state. A senior BJP leader, who has slogged in the state unit of the party for the past several years in a hostile state like Tamil Nadu where Dravidian politics is ruling the roost, told IANS that with this style of functioning by the state president, the party will not go far . He said that in Tamil Nadu unit of the party, there were several senior leaders who have been ardently toeing the party line and antagonising such leaders would spell doom for the party in the state. Speaking to IANS, a former state office-bearer of BJP pointed out: “A political party cannot be cleaned and made functional by a single individual who don’t have any political background. Energy and drive are one thing and delivering is another matter. It has to be seen how he will exhibit the politics of inclusion within the party.”

Times of India. A formal statement in this regard has been made by the Punjab government in response to a petition filed by former deputy chief minister Om Prakash Soni against the withdrawal of his security. This comes days after the Punjab government had withdrawn the security of more than 400 VVIPs, including re nowned singer Sidhu Moose Wala, who was later shot dead by gangsters on May 29. Earlier on May 30, the HC had asked the Punjab government to explain the basis on which it had recently withdrawn security of several protectees. The state government had also been asked as to how the identity of protectees whose security was withdrawn was made public. Making it clear that the matter cannot be taken casually, HC had asked the state government to submit a report on the issue in a sealed cover by June 2.

NEW DELHI, JUN 2 (PTI): Asserting that an era of cultural revival began in India in 2014, when Prime Minister Narendra Modi led the BJP to power, Home Minister Amit Shah has said this journey will take the country to heights of glory it enjoyed earlier. In a brief speech after watching Akshay Kumarstarrer ‘Samrat Prithviraj’ at a special screening in the national capital on Wednesday night, Shah said after overcoming numerous adversities, India’s pride, culture and innate faith is now on course to be where it was long back when it showed the way to the world. Prithviraj Chauhan’s war with Muhammad Ghori was a part of a long journey which began in 1025, an apparent reference to Mahmud Ghazni’s attack on Gujarat and plunder of Somnath temple, and ended in 1947 with India becoming independent, the home minister said, adding that he has been a keen student of history. Will words of condemnation be ever enough?” he wrote on Twitter. Peoples Conference chairman Sajad Lone termed the killing a heinous act and said he was at a loss of words to express his condemnation for such a heinous act. “Yet again extremely sad news coming in. An innocent civilian working as a manager in a bank in Kul-

gam has been shot dead,” he said on Twitter. Joining in the condemnation, PDP general secretary Ghulam Nabi Lone Hanjura said such incidents “unmask” the “fake claims of normalcy” by the administration. “Yet another life lost, deeply saddening & condemnable. This place has been turned into a battleground by the high headedness of the admin, its fake claims of normalcy stand unmasked. Situation is far from normal & immediate steps need to be taken for redressal. My condolences,” the PDP leader said in a tweet. BJP’s J-K spokesperson Altaf Thakur said the killing was a serious issue and a matter of concern. “What a shameful act yet again. This time a bank manager of Ellaqui Dehati Bank Vijay Kumar of Rajashtan falls to the bullets of terrorists at Kulgam. Now terrorists targeting public servants too. A serious issue and a matter of concern. High time for security agencies to work out a strategy to stop this vicious cycle of violence,” he said.

CBI files charge sheet against Anil Deshmukh

‘Why look for shivling in every mosque’: RSS Chief amid Gyanvapi row

NEW DELHI, JUN 2 (PTI): The CBI on Thursday filed a charge sheet against former Maharashtra home minister Anil Deshmukh and others in connection with its probe into the Rs 100 crore bribery allegations levelled by former Mumbai Police Commissioner Param Bir Singh against him, officials said. The move comes a day after a special court in Mumbai allowed a plea of dismissed police officer Sachin Waze to turn an approver and seek pardon in the case. In his application filed before the special CBI court, Waze claimed he had cooperated with the CBI before and after his arrest, following which his confessional statement was recorded before a magistrate under provisions of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC). The CBI has filed its charge sheet before a special court in Mumbai against Deshmukh and his personal staff members Sanjeev Palande and Kundan Shinde under charges of criminal conspiracy and provisions of Prevention of Corruption Act.

NEW DELHI, JUN 2 (AGENCIES): Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh chief Mohan Bhagwat today called for a “path through mutual agreement” on the controversy over the filming of Gyanvapi mosque in Uttar Pradesh’s Varanasi, reports NDTV. Hindu and Muslim petitioners are fighting a legal battle over a court-ordered filming of the mosque complex to check whether there are idols of Hindu Gods and Goddesses, and whether a “Shivling” has been found, as claimed by the Hindu petitioners. “We had special devotion towards some places and we spoke about them but we shouldn’t bring out a new matter daily. Why should we escalate the dispute? We have devotion towards Gyanvapi and doing something as per that, it’s alright. But why look for a Shivling in every masjid?” said the chief of the RSS, short for Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, the BJP’s ideological mentor. The RSS chief ’s statement defuses weeks of com-

Mohan Bhagwat ments by rightwing groups and leaders that indicated the matter could turn into street mobilisation, making some to draw parallels with the demolition of the Babri Masjid in UP’s Ayodhya in 1992. “The Gyanvapi matter is going on. We can’t change history. Neither today’s Hindus nor today’s Muslims created it. It happened at that time. Islam came from outside via attackers. In the attacks, devsthans (places of worship) were demolished to exhaust morale of those who wanted India’s independence,” Mr Bhagwat said, news agency ANI reported. “The issues were raised

over places where Hindus have special devotion. Hindus don’t think against Muslims. The ancestors of today’s Muslims were Hindus too. It was done to keep them forever devoid of independence and suppress morale. So Hindus feel they (religious places) should be restored,” Bhagwat said. “If there are issues in mind, it will rise. It is not against anyone...Find out a path through mutual agreement...If a path does not always come out, people approach court, and if it is done then whatever the court decides should be accepted. We should abide by the decisions, considering our judicial system pious and supreme. We should not question its decisions,” the RSS chief said. Amid the Gyanvapi row, a petition seeking an inquiry into the “history” of Taj Mahal was rejected by the Allahabad High Court last month. Days later, a Delhi court hearing a plea seeking restoration of Hindu and Jain deities inside the Qutub Minar complex had reserved its order for June 9.

SRINAGAR, JUN 2 (PTI): Terrorists shot dead a bank employee from Rajasthan inside the bank premises in Kashmir’s Kulgam district on Thursday, the eighth targeted killing in the Valley since May 1 and the third of a non-Muslim government employee. Vijay Kumar, a manager with the Ellaqui Dehati Bank at Areh Mohanpora branch in the south Kashmir district, received grievous gunshot injuries and died on his way to hospital, officials said. The latest killing led to a chorus of condemnation from political parties across the spectrum, including the National Conference and the BJP. Kumar, a resident of Hanumangarh in Rajasthan, had joined the Kulgam branch only a week ago. He had earlier been working in the Kokernag branch of the bank, co-owned by the Central government, the Jammu and Kashmir administration and the State Bank of India. GANDHINAGAR, JUN 2 (PTI): Referring to the importance given to local languages in the new National Education Policy (NEP) by the Centre, Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan on Thursday stressed that all languages of the country are national languages and none is inferior to Hindi or English. Pradhan was addressing the two-day National Education Ministers’ Conference at Mahatma Mandir here. “All languages are national languages, be it Gujarati, Tamil, Bengali or Marathi. No language is inferior to Hindi or English because each language has its own importance. That is why we have given importance to local languages in our new NEP,” Pradhan said in his inaugural speech. While noting that nearly 20 per cent of the population of India does not fall into the definition

change our mindset. In the 21st century, we need to create a knowledge-based India and school education will serve as the base for it,” said Pradhan. On the occasion, Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupen-

dra Patel said the state has taken a lead in implementing the new NEP, adding that nearly 15,000 government-run schools will be developed under the ‘Mission School of Excellence’. Among others, Goa

CM Pramod Samant, who handles education portfolio, Delhi education minister Manish Sisodia and Union MoS for Skill Development and Entrepreneurship Rajeev Chandrasekhar attended the conference.

Centre to set up ‘PM Shri Schools’ to prepare students for future:, says Education Minister

Dharmendra Pradhan with Krishnaswamy Kasturirangan in Gandhinagar. (PTI) of “literacy”, Pradhan urged participants to discuss the issue at the conference. Education ministers of all the states and Union Territories are participating in the conference, with the focus being on the implementation of the new NEP, he said. “We know that some states disagree with the new NEP. But, the Centre does not have any issue with that, because we know what-

ever you have thought (other than what is prescribed in NEP) will be in the interest of the people and we will accept that too,” said Pradhan. The minister also sought “active participation” of all states in developing ‘Curriculum Frameworks’. “We need to free our education from colonial influence. This is the time of decolonisation of our education. We all need to

Union Education Minister Dhar mendra Pradhan on Thursday said the Centre is planning to set up “PM Shri Schools” which will be aimed at preparing students for future and will be the laboratory of new National Education Policy (NEP). Pradhan was addressing the two-day National Education Minister’s Conference in Gujarat. “School education is the foundation on which India will become a knowledgebased economy. We are in the process of establishing ‘PM Shri schools’ which

will be fully equipped to prepare students for the future,” Pradhan said in his address. He said these state-ofthe-art schools will be the “laboratory of NEP 2020”. “We cannot deprive our new generation from 21st century knowledge and skills. I also encourage and solicit suggestions and feedback from all our states and UTs and the entire education ecosystem for creating a futuristic benchmark model in the form of PM Shri schools,” he added. The National Educa-

tion Ministers’ Conference began in Gujarat’s Gandhinagar on Wednesday with a focus on implementation of the new NEP. The minister said the 5+3+3+4 approach of the NEP covering pre-school to secondary school, emphasis on Early Childhood Care and Education Programme (ECCE), teacher training & adult education, integration of skill development with school education and prioritising learning in the mother tongue are steps for preparing global citizens of the 21st century.

UK pledges missiles to Ukraine

Ukrainian servicemen sing a patriotic song amid buildings destroyed during fighting against Russian.(AP/PTI)

The UK Defense Ministry reported that Russia had captured most of the city, one of two in Luhansk province that had remained under Ukrainian control. Speaking by video link to a security conference in Slovakia, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy called for even more weapons and sanctions targeting Russia. “As of today, the occupiers control almost 20 per cent of our territory, almost 125,000 square kilometers (48,262 square miles),” he said. Zelenskyy said Russia had fired 15 cruise missiles in the past day and used a total of 2,478 missiles invading Ukraine on February 24, “most of them targeted civil

infrastructure.” British Defense Secretary Ben Wallace said the UK would send an unspecified number of M270 launchers, which can fire precision-guided rockets up to 80 kilometers (50 miles). Ukrainian troops will be trained in the UK to use the equipment, he said. The British government says the decision to provide the launchers was coordinated closely with the US government, which said Wednesday that it would supply High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems to Ukraine. The two missile systems are similar, though the American one has wheels while the British one -- also US-built -- runs on tracks.

Germany had come under criticism that it wasn’t doing enough to help Ukraine. Chancellor Olaf said Wednesday that his country would supply Ukraine with modern antiaircraft missiles and radar systems. He told lawmakers that the IRIS-T’s surface-to-air missiles Germany planned to provide were the most modern air defense system the country has. Sweden also announced plans on Thursday to donate arms to Kyiv. They include missiles, semi-automatic rifles and anti-tank weapons, Swedish Defense Minister Peter Hultqvist said. The country’s parliament is expected to approve the donation. After Western-supplied arms helped Ukraine fend off Russian attempts to storm the capital, Moscow shifted its focus to seizing all of eastern Ukraine’s industrial Donbas region. As Russia’s military

steadily bombarded Ukrainian-held areas, its offensive there resulted in incremental gains in the last week, as well as A Ukrainian military expert said an uptick in Russian missile strikes came in response to the newly promised arms. “Supplies of Western weapons are of great concern for the Kremlin, because even without sufficient weapons the Ukrainian army is daringly resisting the offensive,” military analyst Oleh Zhdanov told The Associated Press. Military analysts think Russia is hoping to overrun the Donbas before any weapons that might turn the tide arrive. It will take at least three weeks to get the precision US weapons and trained troops onto the battlefield, the Pentagon said. But Defense Undersecretary Colin Kahl said he believes they will arrive in time to make a difference in the fight.

No more Turkey: country in push to be known as ‘Türkiye’ ANKARA, JUN 2 (AP): Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu has sent a letter to the United Nations formally requesting that his country be referred to as “Türkiye,” the state-run news agency reported. The move is seen as part of a push by Ankara to rebrand the country and dissociate its name from the bird, turkey, and some negative connotations that are associated with it. Anadolu Agency said Stephane Dujarric, spokesman to U.N. Secretary General Antonio Guterres, confirmed receipt of the letter late on Wednesday. The agency quoted Dujarric as saying that the name change had become effective “from the moment” the letter was received. President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s government has been pressing for the internationally recognised name Turkey to be changed to “Türkiye” (tur-key-YAY) as

In December, Erdogan ordered the use of “Türkiye” to better represent Turkish culture and values, including demanding that “Made in Türkiye” be used instead of “Made in Turkey” on exported products. Turkish ministries began using “Türkiye” in official documents. Earlier this year, the government also released a promotional video as part of its attempts to change its

name in English. The video shows tourists from across the world saying “Hello Türkiye” at famous destinations. The Turkish presidency’s Directorate of Communications said it launched the campaign “to promote more effectively the use of Türkiye’ as the country’s national and international name on international platforms.” It was not clear whether the name, with a letter that doesn’t exist in the English alphabet, will catch on widely abroad. In 2016, the Czech Republic officially registered its shortform name, Czechia, and while some international institutions use it, many still refer to the country by its longer name. Turkey’s English-language state broadcaster TRT World has switched to using “Türkiye” although the word “Turkey” slips in by journalists still trying to get used to the change.

KYIV, JUN 2 (AP): Britain pledged on Thursday to send sophisticated medium-range rocket systems to Ukraine, joining the United States and Germany in equipping the embattled nation with advanced weapons for shooting down aircraft and knocking out artillery. Wester n arms have been critical to Ukraine’s success in stymieing Russia’s much larger and betterequipped military during a war now in its 99th day. But as Russian forces closed in on a key city in recent days, the Ukrainian government said its fighters needed better rocket launchers to prevail. A Kremlin spokesman again warned of “absolutely undesirable and rather unpleasant scenarios” if the latest Western-supplied weapons were fired into Russia. “This pumping of Ukraine with weapons ... will bring more suffering to Ukraine, which is merely a tool in the hands of those countries that supply it with weapons,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters. Russian forces continued to pound towns and cities overnight and to tighten their grip on the eastern city of Sievierodonetsk.

ISLAMABAD/ANKARA, JUN 2 (PTI): Reacting sharply to Imran Khan’s comments about “breaking Pakistan into three pieces”, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Thursday said the former premier was “unfit for public office”. The prime minister, who is currently on a visit to Turkey, accused the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf supremo of “making naked threats against the country”, and warned his predecessor against “talking about [the] division of Pakistan”. “While I am in Turkey inking agreements, Imran Niazi is making naked

The latest comments by the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) PM on Twitter referred to a Wednesday night interview of Khan with a private news organisation “Bol News” where the PTI chief urged the establishment to make the “right decisions” and warned that if Pakistan were to lose its nuclear deterrence, it would fragment into “three pieces”. The cricketer-turnedpolitician also said the current political situation was a problem for the country as well as the establishment.

paid their tribute to the singer at his residence. “It is a big loss. The entire industry is reeling under shock. He didn’t have any health issue as such for the few days he had acidity problem,” Bhattarcharya told reporters outside KK’s residence. On Wednesday, the West Bengal government gave a gun salute to honour the singer. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee paid floral tributes to him. His body was taken to the Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport to be transferred to his residence in Mumbai. KK, regarded as one

of the top singers, had not taken a formal training in music but emerged as one of the most popular singers of the late 90s and 2000s right after his debut with Gulzar-directed 1996 film “Maachis”. It was singer Hariharan who encouraged KK to Mumbai after he heard his singing in Delhi. They later worked on Vishal Bhardwajcomposed track ‘Chhod Aaye Hum Woh Galiyaan’, which also featured Suresh Wadkar and Vinod Sehgal. KK is mostly regarded for his work in Hindi but he also sang memorable film tracks in other languages like Tamil, Telugu, Bengali.

He has lent his voice to actors such as Shah Rukh Khan, Emraan Hashmi, Salman Khan, Hrithik Roshan, R Madhavan, Vivek Oberoi and Ranbir Kapoor among others. Some of KK’s most popular songs include ‘Yaaron’, ‘Tu Hi Meri Shab Hai’, ‘Tadap Tadap Ke Is Dil Se’, ‘Awarapan Banjarapan’, ‘Aankhon Mein Teri Ajab Si’, ‘Khuda Jaane’, ‘Zindagi Do Pal Ki’ and ‘Tu Jo Mila’ among others. (PTI) It may be recalled that KK had performed at DDSC Stadium, Dimapur on December 1, 2016 during the International Hornbill Festival.

Jury rules in favour of Depp, says Heard defamed ex-husband

A

Virginia jur y has found that actress Amber Heard defamed Hollywood star Johnny Depp when she wrote a 2018 ‘Washington Post’ op-ed alluding to her past claims of domestic violence, reports ‘Variety’. The jury also found that Depp defamed Heard, through his attorney, in the course of fighting back against her charges. It awarded Depp $10 million in compensatory damages, plus $5 million in punitive damages, which Judge Penney Azcarate reduced to $350,000 in accordance with the state’s statutory cap. Heard was awarded $2 million in compensatory damages for her counterclaim. The jury, five men and two women, who have been deliberating on their verdict since this past Friday, also found that Heard had acted with “actual malice”, meaning that they were convinced she had made the statements knowing they were false, according to ‘Variety’. Responding to the verdict from the United Kingdom, where he has been attending concerts, Depp said Heard’s false claims had “a seismic impact on my life and my career”.

He said: “And six years later, the jury gave me my life back. I am truly humbled.” Depp added that he was “overwhelmed by the outpouring of love and the colossal support and kindness from around the world,” and that the verdict left him “at peace”. Though the jury awarded damages to both sides, the outcome is a clear win for Depp, who lost a similar trial in the United Kingdom in 2020, notes ‘Variety’. Depp brought that lawsuit after ‘The Sun’ newspaper called him a “wife beater”. The judge had ruled that Heard’s allegations were “substantially true”. The lingering question now, according to ‘Variety’, is whether Depp can rehabilitate his film career, which has been moribund for the last four years. In a statement, Heard said she was “disappointed”

and “heartbroken” by the outcome. “The disappointment I feel today is beyond words,” Heard said. “I’m heartbroken that the mountain of evidence still was not enough to stand up to the disproportionate power, influence and sway of my ex-husband.” She also pointed out that the verdict

was “a setback” for women. “It sets back the clock to a time when a woman who spoke up and spoke out could be publicly shamed and humiliated. It sets back the idea that violence against women is to be taken seriously.” Raising the issue of freedom of speech, Heard said Depp’s attorneys succeeded in getting the jury to overlook this “key issue” and “ignore evidence that was so conclusive that we won in the UK”. She concluded by saying: “I’m sad I lost this case. But I am sadder still that I seem to have lost a right I thought I had as an American -- to speak freely and openly.” (IANS)

Norway chess: Anand posts second Ukraine beat Scotland to keep WC dream alive straight win in Classical event, takes lead G L A S G OW, J U N 1 (AGENCIES): Ukraine kept alive their dream of reaching the World Cup finals by beating Scotland 3-1 in their playoff at Hampden Park on Wednesday in their first game since the Russian invasion of their country. Ukraine will now face Wales on Sunday in Cardiff with the winner taking a place at November’s finals in Qatar. The loss means Scotland remain without an appearance at a World Cup since 1998. Goals from Andriy Yarmolenko and Roman Yaremchuk had put a confident and dominant Ukraine 2-0 up before Callum McGregor pulled a goal back for the Scots in the 79th minute. The goal injected some belief into Scotland who applied some late pressure but deep into stoppage time substitute Artem Dovbyk finished off a counter-attack to secure the victory. An emotionally

drained Ukraine coach Oleksandr Petrakov said his team had been playing for all those struggling back home. Ukraine’s travelling support, who had come from across the United Kingdom and from as far away as Australia and the United States to cheer on their team, were jubilant with many no doubt now

planning to extend their trip to a weekend in South Wales. Whether they will be planning trips to Doha after Sunday’s game remains to be seen but they will certainly have plenty of belief after an impressive display. Ukraine’s domestic competition was halted after the invasion and the country’s home-based players

have not played competitive football since December but they were quick out of the blocks and caused Scotland problems from the outset. Home keeper Craig Gordon had to make three saves in the opening 25 minutes to keep the game scoreless with Ukraine’s smooth passing and movement too much for a hesitant Scottish defence.

The goal finally came in the 33rd when Yarmolenko sprung the offside trap and latched on to a ball over the top from Ruslan Malinovskyi and lobbed the advancing Gordon. Ukraine were full value for their halftime lead and extended their advantage four minutes after the break when Yaremchuk beat two Scottish defenders to reach a cross from Oleksandr Karavaev and head into the far corner. With the home crowd turning against their team and sloppy passing undermining attempts to gain any sort of momentum, Scotland looked beaten but they found a way back into the game. Ukraine keeper Georgiy Bushchan punched the ball out in a crowded box and McGregor struck it goalwards and although Taras Stepanenko looked to have cleared, the ball was ruled to have crossed the line and a goal awarded.

Viswanathan Anand

STAVANGER (NORWAY), JUN 2 (PTI): Indian Grandmaster Viswanathan Anand posted his second win on the trot, defeating Bulgarian Veselin Topalov in the Classical section to take the lead at the Norway Chess tournament here. The 52-year-old Anand trumped his opponent in 36 moves in the battle of the veterans to make it two out of two after

the second round late on Wednesday. The five-time world champion now leads with six points. LO N D O N, J U N 2 (AGENCIES): Argentina marked the revival of the Cup of Champions in style as an inspired Lionel Messi helped them outclass Italy 3-0 in a heavyweight clash billed as the ‘Finalissima’ at a raucous Wembley Stadium, London on Wednesday. First-half goals by Lautaro Martinez and Angel di Maria put the south American champion in complete control against an Italy side which was back at Wembley 11 months after beating England to win the delayed Euro 2020. With thousands of their supporters in the 87,000 crowd determined to turn north west London into Buenos Aires for the night, captain Messi set up two goals as Argentina proved simply too quick and slick for the lumbering Azzurri. Martinez tapped home from close range in the 28th minute from Messi’s low cross to reward Argentina’s early dominance. Inter Milan’s Martinez then slid a pass through for Di Maria to outpace
