Political alternative planned for 2023

Correspondent

KOHIMA, AUG 2 (NPN): Several sitting legislators including intending candidates are contemplating on forming a new political party in Nagaland for the 2023 general election as the political apple cart has been upset due to merger of 21 NPF legislators with NDPP and also continuance of 2018 seat– sharing formula of 40(NDPP): 20(BJP) for 2023 assembly election as announced jointly on July

26 by NDPP and BJP. Sources told Nagaland Post that around 35 ex-parliamentarians, candidates, some sitting legislators, retired bureaucrats and young politicians were working to float a new party and form the next government in the State. In 2018 NDPP set up 40 candidates and won 18 seats (including uncontested in Northern Angami-II). BJP won 12 of the 20 seats it contested. (The NDPP tally increased its

tally from 18 to 21 after merger of two NPP legislators and winning one by election). NPF contested 58 and won 26 in 2018. According to sources, the group will soon take a final decision on whether it will join any party other than BJP and NDPP, or establish a new political party in the State. Those privy to the meeting held in Dimapur recently, explained that some of the NDPP sitting MLAs who won as NPF in 2018

are unsure of getting tickets because as per 2018 seat sharing arrangement, the BJP had been allotted the particular constituency. Also, some NDPP candidates who lost the election in 2018 to NPF are also unsure of getting ticket since those former NPF legislator(s)are now officially sitting NDPP legislator(s). They merged with NDPP on the condition that they would be given NDPP ticket for 2023. (Cont’d on p-8)

He asserted that the Jharkhand MLA’s allegation that the three arrested legislators had lured him was false. Demanding action against Jaimangal, the Assam minister added, “Mr. @

KumarJaimangal has been regularly meeting HCM Dr.@himantabiswa sir. He should face the law for making a fraudulent allegation against Hon’ble Chief Minister of Assam and against those tribal MLAs.” Sharing his cabinet colleague’s tweet, Sarma wrote, “Fake FIR in #Jharkhand. The so-called FIR looks like @INCIndia asking Ottavio Quattrocchi to file a case

against Bofors.” The Rs 64-crore Bofors payoff case involved the Congress-led Union government and members of Swedish government in a arms deal scam in the 1980s and 1990s, with Italian businessman Ouattrocchi figuring as a ‘middleman’ in the deal. Three Congress legislators -- Irfan Ansari, Rajesh Kachchap and Naman Bixal Kongari

-- were arrested in Bengal on Sunday after a huge amount of cash was allegedly seized from a car in which they were travelling. The Congress, which is part of the JMM-led government in Jharkhand, alleged that the BJP was trying to topple the government there by a offering ministerial berth and Rs 10 crore each as bribe to its MLAs. Jaimangal had filed a complaint in Ranchi on Sunday claiming that Kachchap and Bixal Kongari had asked him to travel to Kolkata and offered him money, while Ansari wanted to take him to Guwahati from Kolkata to attend a meeting with Sarma. Soon after the FIR was lodged, Sarma had told reporters here that Congress leaders stay in touch with him as friends owing to his over-two-decade-long association with the party. Sarma had joined the BJP in 2015 and had assumed the post of chief minister of Assam in May 2021.

Protest by Mizo Zirlai Pawl.

AIZAWL, AUG 2 (PTI): Influential students’ body Mizo Zirlai Pawl (MZP) demonstrated on Tuesday outside the office of the Registrar of Cooperative Societies in Aizawl, protesting against the re-employment of a retired officer under the state’s Cooperation Department. Lalrinsanga, who retired as the Additional Registrar of Cooperative Societies on superannuation in May, was recently re-employed by the government. The MZP members picketed to prevent him from attending office. However, the pro-

testers left soon after they learned that the official was on leave for three days. On Monday, they held a demonstration in front of Vanapa Hall and burned a copy of the re-employment order. MZP president Lalnunmawia Pautu said Lalrinsanga had retired in May, and his successor Maria G Ralte also retired in July. He said that the students’ body is strongly against re-employment of any retired official, who does not have any speciality or distinction, as it hampers the chance for educated youth to enter government services.

Re-employment or retention of retired officials is also a waste of public money, he said. MZP has decided to intensify its agitation, and demanded the state government revoke the re-employment order by Thursday. If the government fails to revoke the order, the MZP said it would picket before the officer’s workplace. It would also hold demonstrations to prevent state Cooperation Minister C Lalrinsanga from attending office on August 8. The minister could not be contacted for a comment despite repeated attempts.

Tripura CM tells company constructing ATSUM imposes lightning shutdown against arrest of leader Lighthouse project to expedite work

Manik Saha to meet the deadline by any means”, he told reporters on Monday. The prime minister laid the foundation stone for the ambitious Lighthouse project at Akhura through video conference along with five other cities in January last year. The Rs 162.50 crore Lighthouse project is adopted for providing housing facility to the economically

weaker sections of people living in urban areas. Each Lighthouse project will have 100 flats being built using New Zealand technology, which is cost effective as well as earthquake resistant. The 100 flats are supposed to be built in one year but the progress seems tardy at Akhura. The chief minister said he will report to the prime minister about the progress of the Lighthouse project in Delhi on August 6. “Since it’s the Prime Minister’s dream project, it can’t miss the target of what may come. The government will remove all obstacles that come in the way of tardy pace of work”, he said. In Chennai, the Lighthouse project has already been commissioned.

IMPHAL, AUG 2: Irate over the detention of their leaders by police, a tribal based student body in Manipur imposed a lightning shutdown beginning from 6pm on Tuesday. Earlier in the day, a police team picked up four leaders of All Tribal Students’ Union Manipur (ATSUM), the apex body of tribal based student bodies, from its office in Imphal, around noon. The detention of the four leaders, including ATSUM president Paotinthang Lupheng, was in the backdrop of a proposed 24-hour total shutdown in all hill districts of the state announced by the apex body due to begin from Wednesday (August 3) evening at 6pm, to press the state government

Reject proposals for uranium mining in M’laya: HYC Correspondent SHILLONG, AUG 2: The Hynniewtrep Youth Council (HYC), a pressure group in Meghalaya on Tuesday urged Chief Minister Conrad Sangma, to bring in a resolution in the Assembly to close down all proposals relating to uranium mining in the state. The HYC’s demand to adopt a resolution against uranium was after Minister of State in the Prime Minister’s Office Dr. Jitendra Singh had informed the Lok Sabha that the Centre has not yet abandoned the idea of uranium mining from Domiasiat-Mawthabah area in South West Khasi Hills. In a memorandum submitted to Chief Minister Conrad Sangma, HYC President Robertjune Kharjahrin and General Secretary Roy Kupar Synrem said, as per a statement of Union Minister of State

Dr. Jitendra Singh to an unstarred question in the Parliament, it is clear that the government of India is still pursuing with uranium mining in the state. Noting that HYC vehemently opposed to any steps or acts of the government of India to mine uranium in the state, the Council said, “It would be prudent and forceful that the Assembly pass a resolution and to impress upon the government of India to close down any programme or proposal to mine uranium.” Meghalaya is the third uranium-rich state in the country after Jharkhand and Andhra Pradesh. The state accounts for 16 percent of India’s uranium reserves, with deposits es-

timated to be around 9,500 tonnes and 4,000 tonnes respectively at Domiasiat and Wakhaji, both in South West Khasi hills district. The Uranium Corporation of India Limited (UCIL) has proposed to set up an open-cast uranium mining and processing plant at Maghalaya’s Mawthabah. It had pegged Kylleng Pyndengsohiong Mawthabah project in Meghalaya for Rs 1,100 crore. The ores are spread over a mountainous terrain in deposits varying from eight to 47 metres from the surface in and around Domiasiat, 135 km west from Shillong. The previous Congress-led Meghalaya government had annulled the decision taken during the

previous D.D. Lapang regime to lease 422 hectares of land to UCIL for premining activities in South West Khasi Hill district. The proposed opencast uranium mining in Meghalaya’s South West Khasi Hills district has been hanging fire since 1992 after several groups and political leaders expressed fears of radiation impact on human health and environmental degradation. In 2018, the Atomic Minerals Directorate (AMD) had decided to stop exploratory drilling for uranium in South West Khasi Hills district, while the UCIL reportedly closed down its office in Shillong due to continued opposition towards uranium mining in the state.

arrested their leaders and if they were not released by 6pm, it served an ultimatum to impose the lightning shutdown in hill districts from 6 pm. A report said that the shutdown began in Kangpokpi district headquarters where supporters blocked vehicular movement on NH-2. “Denouncing this undemocratic act of state police, ATSUM would like to inform that if the arrested ATSUM EMs are not released on or before 6:00 PM today (02-08-2022), Emergency Shutdown in all hill districts of Manipur shall be imposed from 6:00 pm today onwards,” the statement signed by its vice president Vanlallian Khaute said. He urged the general public to cooperate in their fight for tribals’ rights. A report from Kang-

pokpi district headquarters said that the lighting shutdown has begun in the district. The ATSUM has announced a 24-hour shutdown in the hill districts of Manipur with effect from 6 pm on August 3 till 6 pm on August 4. The shutdown will be followed by intense agitation from August 5, ATSUM added. While calling for the shutdown, ATSUM expressed strong resentment against the state government’s lackadaisical attitude towards the wish and desire of the tribal people for the tabling of the HAC (Hill Areas Committee) recommended ‘The Manipur (Hill Areas) ADC Bill 2021’ in

the ongoing 2nd session of the 12th Manipur Legislative Assembly.” Various tribal based CSOs and students’ bodies have extended support to the proposed shutdown. The support continued to pour in as Senapati District Students’ Union, All Naga Student Association Manipur, Tangkhul Katamnao Saklong also announced their support to the shutdown. It may be noted that on November 25, 2021, Manipur government had reached an agreement with the ATSUM, ANSAM and KSO (GHQ) in connection with the demand for the introduction of the amended ADC Bill, 2021 in the state Assembly.

NEW DELHI, AUG 2 (AGENCIES): Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s brother Prahlad Modi, who is also the vice president of All India Fair Price Shop Dealers’ Federation, on Tuesday staged a dharna in New Delhi with various demands of the organisation. Prahlad along with several other members of the All India Fair Price Shop

Dealers’ Federation (AIFPSDF) gathered at Jantar Mantar, holding banners and raising slogans. “A delegation of AIFPSDF will submit a memorandum to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, listing our long-standing demands for the sake of our survival. for running shops, a raise of mere 20 paise per kg in our margin is a cruel joke. We request the Union government to grant us relief and end our financial miseries,” Prahlad said. He further stated that AIFPSDF will hold a national executive meeting on Wednesday and based on that, their next course of action will be decided.

AIFPSDF national general secretary Biswambhar Basu told PTI that they also plan to meet Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla on Wednesday. The AIFPSDF has been demanding compensation for loss on rice, wheat and sugar, and also for edible oil and pulses to be supplied through fair price shops. It has also demanded that the ‘West Bengal Ration Model’ of free distribution be implemented across the country. Further, the members said all due margins for all the states, including Jammu and Kashmir, should be reimbursed immediately. “We also demand that edible oil, pulses and LPG gas cylinders be supplied through fair price shops. Rural areas’ fair price shop dealers should be allowed to function as direct procurement agents for rice and wheat. Our demands were also raised by TMC MP Sougata Roy in Parliament,” Basu said, adding that their protests will continue until their demands are met.

PM, min change DPs to ‘Tiranga’ on social media a/c NEW DELHI, AUG 2 (PTI): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday changed his display picture on social media accounts to the national flag and urged people to do the same as part of a collective movement to celebrate the Tricolour. Other senior BJP leaders, including Union ministers and chief ministers, followed suit. Union ministers Amit Shah, Rajnath Singh and Nitin Gadkari and chief ministers Yogi Adityanath and Shivraj Singh Chouhan were among a large number of party members who switched their profile pictures on Twitter to the national flag. In his Mann ki Baat radio broadcast on Sunday, Modi said the ‘Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav’ is turning into a mass movement and urged people to put ‘Tiranga’ as the profile picture of their social media accounts between August 2 and 15. “It is a special 2nd August today! At a time when we are marking Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav, our nation is all set for Har Ghar Tiranga. I have changed the DP on my social media pages and urge you all to do the same,” he said in a tweet.

8 cases of monkeypox, task force to monitor kit, vax development: Mandaviya NEW DELHI, AUG 2 (PTI): Eight cases of monkeypox have been reported so far in India and a national task force has been set up to monitor the development of diagnostics and vaccines, Health Minister Mansukh Madaviya said on Tuesday. Replying to queries in Rajya Sabha during Question Hour, he informed the members about the various steps being taken to prevent the spread of the disease, and to develop testing kits and vaccines. Till date eight cases of the disease have been detected in India, out of which five have foreign travel history, the Minister of Health and Family Welfare said. The Indian Council of Medical Research has successfully isolated the monkeypox virus and an expression of interest has been floated for research institutions, vaccine and diagnostic kits manufacturers in India to take the virus strain for further research to develop a vaccine in the country, he added. The minister was replying to a supplementary question. In a written reply to a question on measures and preventive action initiated by

cases, to the affected districts to assist in control and containment efforts by state authorities. In response to another supplementary question, Mandaviya said the government has relied on the experience of tackling COVID-19, to be alert and prepared in advance to prevent the spread of any disease. He said when the disease was first reported globally in May, India had already started preparing to tackle it. While the first case in India was reported from Kerala on July 14, the minister said much before that on May 1, 2022 the Centre had given guidelines to all states, and not just for international airports, on surveillance mechanism and contact tracing, how to collect samples from suspected cases and sending it to recognised laboratories for testing. With the disease spreading only through close and deep contacts, he said no specific community is at risk and the government has taken up steps to create awareness about common symptoms, reporting of suspected cases and prevention from the disease.

The minister said the National Institute of Virology, Pune under ICMR has been designated as a referral laboratory for testing suspected cases. In addition, 15 other ICMR-VRDL (Viral Research and Diagnostic Laboratory) network laboratories have been optimised to undertake diagnostic testing for monkeypox disease. Adhikari urges Shah to rollout CAA AAP announces 1st list of 10 Govt won’t see inflation as it’s wearing after precaution dose; Shah assures candidates for Gujarat polls ‘blindfolds of arrogance’, says Rahul

NEW DELHI, AUG 2 (PTI): BJP leader from West Bengal Suvendu Adhikari Tuesday urged Union Home Minister Amit Shah to implement the citizenship law CAA at the earliest, with the latter assuring him that rules regarding it will be framed after the Covid precaution dose vaccination exercise is over. The framing of rules for the Citizenship (Amendment) Act will pave the way for its implementation. Passed by Parliament in December 2019, the Act is yet to be rolled out due to the absence of rules. The government has cited the outbreak of pandemic for not framing them so far. Adhikari, the leader of the opposition in the state assembly, told reporters after meeting Shah that he also handed him a list of nearly 100 Trinamool Congress leaders allegedly involved in the recruitment scam in which former West Bengal minister Partha Chatterjee has been arrested. Seeking a wider probe to expose everyone involved in the scandal, Adhikari gave the home minister even letterheads of some TMC leaders, including MLAs, that were purportedly used for recommending certain names for jobs by allegedly

taking bribes. He tweeted after meeting Shah, “It’s an honour for me to meet Union Home Minister Amit Shah for 45 minutes at his office in Parliament. I briefed him how WB Govt is completely mired in corrupt activities such as the teachers recruitment scam. Also requested him to implement CAA at the earliest.” Adhikari told reporters that the issue of CAA, slammed by critics for its alleged anti-Muslim bias, implementation is very critical for West Bengal where a large number of people who can benefit from its provisions. The CAA was passed by Parliament on December 11, 2019, and the Act was notified within 24 hours on December 12. In May, while addressing a rally in Bengal, Shah had said that the law would be implemented once

the Covid pandemic ends. There is a view that the government is treading cautiously on the matter after the Act drew saw protests in different parts of the country. It seeks to grant citizenship to persecuted minorities of neighbouring countries, Bangladesh, Pakistan and Afghanistan, who had come to India by December 31, 2014. Speaking to reporters, West Bengal BJP president Sukanta Majumder also hit out at TMC leader and state Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, alleging that without indications from her the recruitment scam could not have happened. “It is an organised crime. There was a ‘cut money food chain’ and some people would be based in every district to pick money and channel it through the party (TMC) organisation,” he alleged.

Woman throws shoes at Partha

Partha Chatterjee and Shubra Ghorui

KOLKATA, AUG 2 (PTI): A woman from West Bengal’s Amtala area on Tuesday made an attempt to throw her shoes at suspended Trinamool Congress leader Partha Chatterjee when the latter was being escorted out of a hospital here by Enforcement Directorate (ED) officials. However, the footwear flung by the woman missed Chatterjee. The middle-aged woman, Shubra Ghorui, is said to have harboured anger against Chatterjee after the seizure of around Rs 50 crore in cash, along with jewellery, by the Enforcement Directorate from two apartments of Arpita Mukherjee, a close associate of the suspended TMC

leader. “I have come here to hit (Partha) Chatterjee with my shoes. I cannot think that he has built apartment after apartment, and accumulated so much cash when people are roaming on the roads without any job. After cheating people, he is travelling in AC cars. He must be dragged with a rope…I will walk back home barefoot. “It is not only my anger but that of lakhs and lakhs of people of West Bengal,” Ghorui told reporters. The veteran leader, who has been relieved of his ministerial responsibilities, was then whisked away in a vehicle from the hospital premises by ED security personnel.

AHMEDABAD, AUG 2 (PTI): The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Tuesday released its first list of 10 nominees for the upcoming Gujarat polls which it claimed included members of tribal, backward, and scheduled caste communities. With the announcement, the AAP has become the first party to declare candidates for the polls in the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-ruled Gujarat, the home state of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah. The schedule for the Assembly elections is not yet decided by the Election Commission. In 2017, Gujarat went to the polls in December. The announcement comes a day after AAP national convener Arvind Kejriwal addressed a rally in Gir Somnath district where he promised a monthly unemployment allowance and guaranteed job to every youth in Gujarat if his party is voted to power. Among the ten cand i d a t e s, G u j a r a t A A P vice president Bhemabhai Choudhary has been nominated from the Deodar Assembly seat in the Banaskantha district, said state unit president Gopal Italia. Another state vice president Jagmal Vala will contest

from the Somnath seat. Two other state vice presidents - Arjun Rathva and Sagar Rabari - have been nominated from Chhotaudepur (ST) and Bechraji seats, respectively, said Italia. He added that the second list of AAP candidates will be declared soon. “The logic behind announcing the names early is to give more time to candidates to meet and connect with the people of their respective seats. In the first list, we have accommodated candidates of OBC, SC and ST communities,” said Italia. While Dalit leader and former Congressman from Rajkot, Vashram Sagathiya, has been chosen for the Rajkot-Rural seat, state AAP secretary Ram Dhaduk has been given the ticket from Kamrej seat in Surat city. Gujarat AAP’s state trade wing president Shivlal Barasia is the nominee from the Rajkot South seat. Sudhir Vaghani, the Gujarat joint secretary, is the AAP’s candidate from the Gariyadhar seat and cooperative leader Rajendra Solanki from the Bardoli segment in the Surat district. Omprakash Tiwari, who fought and lost as a Congress candidate in 2017 polls, has been given a ticket from the Naroda constituency in Ahmedabad.

4 BJP MLAs suspended amid noisy scenes in Jharkhand Assembly RANCHI, AUG 2 (PTI): Amid ruckus by opposition BJP members in Jharkhand Assembly, demanding a debate on corruption, Speaker Rabindra Nath Mahato on Tuesday suspended four legislators of the saffron camp till August 4, a day prior to the conclusion of the ongoing monsoon session. MLAs Bhanu Pratap Shahi, Dhulu Mahto, Jaiprakash Bhai Patel and Randhir Singh were suspended from the House for unruly behavior. As soon as the proceedings began at 11 am, saffron party MLAs trooped into the well, seeking resignation of Chief Minister Hemant Soren over graft allegations, and a debate on the issue of corruption. BJP legislators accused the JMM-led coalition government of looting sand, coal and other mineral resources. Legislator Biranchi Narayan was heard expressing concern over the chief min-

NEW DELHI, AUG 2 (PTI): Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday alleged that the government will not be able to see inflation as it is wearing the “blindfolds of arrogance” and selling the country’s property in “free fund” to friends. A day after the debate on price rise in the Lok Sabha, the former Congress president put out posts on Twitter and Facebook to attack the government on the issue. In an apparent reference to BJP leader Jayant Sinha asserting during the debate that the Opposition is looking for ‘mehngai” but has been unable to find it, Gandhi tweeted, “Well, how will they see inflation? Wearing blindfolds of arrogance, they are selling the country’s property in ‘free fund’ to ‘friends’.” In his tweet in Hindi, Gandhi said the BJP-led government, busy celebrating ‘Amrit kaal’, said in the House that there is no ‘mehngai’ in the country. He also shared a table comparing the prices of essential commodities from 2019 to 2022.Gandhi’s remarks were also a dig at BJP MP Nishikant Dubey’s comments during the debate. Speaking in Hindi, Dubey had said

Prime Minister Modi gave “free fund” food to 80 crore poor even in adverse circumstances. The country is battling an “epidemic of unemployment” with crores of families left with no means of a stable income but the government is spending billions just to polish the image of an “arrogant king”, Gandhi added in a lengthy Facebook post in Hindi. He said the Congress had tried to get the government to answer the questions of the people during the ongoing Monsoon session of Parliament. However, everyone saw how Opposition MPs were suspended, arrested for protests and the House adjourned. “Yesterday when the discussion did take place, the government clearly said that ‘there is no problem like inflation! “The country is battling an epidemic of unemployment, crores of

families are left with no means of stable income. But the government is spending billions of rupees just to polish the image of an ‘arrogant king’,” Gandhi said, attacking Prime Minister Narendra Modi. In the post addressed to the people of the country, the former Congress chief said, “Don’t consider yourself alone, the Congress is your voice, and you are Congress’ strength. We have to fight with every decree of the dictator, every attempt to suppress the voice of the people.”

Nagaland Post VOL. XXXII NO. 238 DIMAPUR, WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 3, 2022

ULB Polls a challenge

A

fter the Supreme Court issued a directive on July 29 to the government of Nagaland to complete the elections of the local bodies and declare the results by the end of January, 2023 the ball it has placed the ball in the state government’s court as further delay would invite strong legal repercussion. The order came in relation to a civil appeal filed by the People Union For Civil Liberties (PUCL) and others against the State of Nagaland. The appeal was filed challenging the Nagaland Legislative Assembly’s September 22, 2021 resolution exempting operation of Part IXA(The Municipalities) of the Constitution of India, which mandates 33% reservation for women, in Municipalities and Town Councils of the State. A Special Leave Petition(SLP) was earlier filed by NMA representatives but after they withdrew , PUCL made itself a party in the case. The main objection against reservation from tribe organisation was that it infringed upon traditional and customary laws under Article 371A. However, the litigant argued that reservations do not infringe upon Article 371(A) of the Constitution. The rationale was that Article 371 (A) related to laws made in the Parliament while the reservations had been effected through a Constitutional amendment. Many leaders from the NMA, as well as other tribal womens’ groups in Nagaland, formed the Joint Action Committee on Women Reservation (JACWR) in the same year to press for the issue. Nagaland passed the Nagaland Municipal Act in 2001 with regard to urban local bodies(municipal and town councils) but without reservation clause. Election to ULBs were held in 2004 under the Nagaland Municipal Act 2001 without 33% reservation. Before the next scheduled ULB election in 2009, the issue got embroiled in court between the women group and state government, when the former demanded implementation of 33% reservation. Under pressure, the government in 2006 then amended the Nagaland Municipal Act 2001 by inserting Section 23A to the Nagaland Municipal Act which made Part IX A operative. Holding of elections to the ULBs under Article 243T has been made mandatory as per the 74th Amendment. Under this amendment, the discretion of the state Government has been drastically curtailed in the sense that it has constitutional obligations to set up the Municipalities as per article 243T. However 33% reservation has been contested by various tribal organisations which came together under the umbrella of Joint Co-ordination Committee(JCC). JCC opposed the reservation on the ground that it was in conflict with Article 371A which provides special protection to Nagas of Nagaland from any law passed by parliament. The confusion and lack of clarity on the part of the state government was exposed when it first passed a resolution on September 22,2012 to make Article IXA operative in the Municipal Act 2001. Then in a hurriedly convened one-day sitting on November 24,2016, the government revoked the September 22,2012 resolution. Then again on December 15,2017 the Nagaland Legislative Assembly again passed another the resolution revoking the November 24,2016 resolution that had made Article 243T of Part IXA inoperative. Polls were announced but tribal organisations under JCC vehemently opposed it and ultimately the government in 2017 withdrew the notification till the matter was resolved. Since the 74th amendment makes the 33% reservation mandatory and the state government has a challenging task not because it has been asked to conduct polls in the festival and wedding season on December –January but since the Amendment itself is not sacrosanct.

DailyDevotion The Teaching of Adversity

In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world. —John 16:33 The typical view of the Christian life is that it means being delivered from all adversity. But it actually means being delivered in adversity, which is something very different. “He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. No evil shall befall you, nor shall any plague come near your dwelling…” (Psalm 91:1,10)— the place where you are at one with God. If you are a child of God, you will certainly encounter adversities, but Jesus says you should not be surprised when they come. “In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.” He is saying, “There is nothing for you to fear.” The same people who refused to talk about their adversities before they were saved often complain and worry after being born again because they have the wrong idea of what it means to live the life of a saint. God does not give us overcoming life— He gives us life as we overcome. The strain of life is what builds our strength. If there is no strain, there will be no strength. Are you asking God to give you life, liberty, and joy? He cannot, unless you are willing to accept the strain. And once you face the strain, you will immediately get the strength. Overcome your own timidity and take the first step. Then God will give you nourishment— “To him who overcomes I will give to eat from the tree of life…” (Revelation 2:7). If you completely give of yourself physically, you become exhausted. But when you give of yourself spiritually, you get more strength. God never gives us strength for tomorrow, or for the next hour, but only for the strain of the moment. Our temptation is to face adversities from the standpoint of our own common sense. But a saint can “be of good cheer” even when seemingly defeated by adversities, because victory is absurdly impossible to everyone, except God.

NAGALAND POST, DIMAPUR WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 3, 2022

Post-mortem

Are we equipping young Indians to meet new aspirations?

T

he Republic of India, with its varied topography, extraordinary ethnic mix, 22 official and 780 spoken languages and diverse religions and cultures has survived derisive remarks by the likes of Winston Churchill who lived in the delusion that the nation was no more than a “geographical expression”. Whatever the political dispensation, however complex the social fabric, the nation has moved decisively on the path of progress overcoming existential threats and garnering attention as one of the world’s most powerful democracies. Why did most countries consider India’s choice of becoming a democratic republic with universal adult suffrage a foolhardy misadventure? The sce pticism of most leaders was based on the circumstances in which India became a free nation. The devastation caused by the deadly Partition which claimed over a million lives and displaced a further 18 million, the unequal castebased hierarchical society steeped in poverty and appalling illiteracy levels of 84% were hardly great qualifications for a country beginning afresh.

However, disproving those anxieties, elections have become a central and indispensable feature of Indian democracy, a mechanism through which the nation’s citizenry expresses its will and participates in public affairs. Around 73 countries across the world do not have elections, and it is in this context that the Indian achievement is further highlighted making it the widely acknowledged global gold standard in conducting elections. Conducting consistent and periodic elections in the country by encouraging large-scale popular participation is a stupendous task. Going by India’s record in this regard, periodic elections as a means of a smooth transfer of power have been a regular and successful feature of India’s democracy in the past 75 years. Not only this, Indians have time and again reposed faith in elections as the most potent means of non-violent and peaceful protest against all acts of omissions and commissions of the government. This, however, is not to say either that the realm of Indian elections is unblemished or that conducting successful elections in

itself satisfies the criterion of democracy. Democracy, as is widely understood, is not a static endpoint but a continuous process and therefore it is important that we stop and reflect upon the various deficiencies and drawbacks of our current state of democracy. One in every four Indians is still illiterate. We still have high infant and maternal mortality rates — worse than those of some of our neighbouring nations such as Bangladesh, Nepal and Bhutan and far worse than those of Sri Lanka. Nearly 40 per cent of the children are stunted and more than one-fourth of the population severely malnourished. The rate of unemployment is so high that it contributes to disgruntlement, frustration and even criminalisation among the youth. The youth unemployment, in particular, has been touching a 50-year high. This becomes a breeding ground for disruptive forces of various hues. Drug abuse in some states has reached alarming proportions. The education system has let the country down, producing millions of unemployables, all of which has been severely exacerbated due to the pandemic. Ironically,

there is no dearth of policies, programmes and funds to deal with these issues. And many of the policies, ostensibly proposed to reform and improve the current state of affairs, such as the Agnipath scheme or the farm laws, have proved to be highly controversial. While many old problems persist, we also have new challenges and opportunities. We are a country of young people. More than 70 per cent of Indians are below 35. They have new aspirations. Are we equipping them to meet these aspirations? Let there be an employment mission to coordinate all the relevant programmes. Recent proposals by institutes such as the Azim Premji University for an “Urban Guarantee Employment Programme” similar to MGNREGA are well worth discussing. Nearly 250 million of the young people are adolescents, who have their own problems. They are no longer children but not yet adults. They worry about what is happening to them physically and emotionally. Their curiosity and experimentation make them vulnerable to exploitation and abuse. This is the time to give them

education in life-skills. Population issues have gone off the political radar altogether. As a result, India’s population is set to overtake that of China’s next year. The department of family welfare was quietly abolished a decade or so ago. One factor contributing to the population explosion is child marriage. One in every three marriages in India is illegal, involving parties below the legal age for marriage. Yet not a whimper is heard. Early marriage leads to early pregnancy, which creates health complications for adolescent girls not physically or mentally equipped to deal with it. We should adopt an integrated adolescent development programme (and not just for health) and implement it in the mission mode. Further, the recent trends of entrenched polarisation and communalisation of the public sphere, with a state that is increasingly becoming punitive, curbing dissent and free expression has to be put under check. We must forcefully reassert our democratic conscience. Since the founding of the republic, India has been considered both the largest and one of the most popu-

lous democratic countries in the world. The main reasons for such a state of affairs were largely owing to the ideals that India strove to attain: maintenance of integrity and non-partisanship of the Election Commission, the active public sphere where dialogue and debates are energetically and freely undertaken, nondiscriminatory management of religious, caste and linguistic diversity, concern for an equitable and equal society that is alert to the issues of gender and sustainable development, and ultimately a profound reverence towards the promise of our founding document; the Constitution, with its promulgation of fundamental rights and an ideology of national citizenship mandated with the virtues of secularism, liberty, equality and fraternity. In the 75th year of Independence, we must proudly and persistently strive to enshrine and achieve the values and virtues for which many a million sacrifices were made. Key lessons from public-private efforts will help eliminate TB

T

he pandemic has reminded us of the private sector’s disruptive potential for serving public health goals. However, in the past, central and state governments have strived to engage with the private sector in different disease areas. There are also several examples in maternal health; the Chiranjeevi Yojana programme in Gujarat, for instance, which was envisioned to increase institutional deliveries by working with private providers, reduced maternal mortality rates by more than half. The Hausala Sajheedari initiative effectively engaged private health facilities for family planning in Uttar Pradesh, where private providers could provide free family planning services on a reimbursement basis under a public private partnership (PPP) model. Building on the learnings of such collaborations, we need to arrive at a holistic strategy that assimilates best practices for private sector engagement effectively, the aim being to identify engagement models with the private sector which can be scaled up across multiple disease areas. In this context, tuberculosis (TB) is one public health issue that illustrates numerous challenges and also offers learnings about potential solutions that can mitigate not just TB, but other

diseases as well. Almost half of all patients with TB symptoms seek care in the private sector. Here, the National Prevalence Survey can offer crucial insights because it offers disaggregated data about the actual burden of TB in India and healthseeking behaviours in the public and private sectors. This information can help form a tailored approach for TB elimination that can suit different state geographies within the country. At the same time, unstandardized care in the private sector could lead to treatment delays, contributing to the emergence of drug-resistant TB and increased mortality; a 2019 study estimated that a symptomatic patient approached multiple private healthcare providers, taking up to 65 days before an accurate diagnosis. The challenge can thus be summarized like this: How can public health systems capitalize upon the disruptive potential of the private sector’s reach and resources and ensure standardized care? For TB, private sector engagement programmes have been implemented dating back to the 1990s. One highly effective model has been the Private-Provider Interface Agency (PPIA). Implemented in Mumbai in Maharashtra, Patna in Bihar and Mehsana

in Gujarat, PPIAs worked with a network of private doctors, chemists, laboratories, and hospitals to ensure that TB diagnosis and treatment practices adhere to the prescribed ‘Standards of TB Care’ in India. As a result, between 2014 and 2018, in Mumbai and Patna, there was a 351% and 532% increase in TB case notifications from the private sector. This was vital because actual reporting of cases result in greater understanding of the TB burden on the ground. Soon, the government expanded this PPP model to develop what we now know as the Patient-Provider Support Agency (PPSA) model. The government’s annual TB report tells us that PPSA programmes have now been scaled up and launched in more than 170 districts across India, but much more needs to be done to ensure seamless implementation across India. Domain experts have already identified some key challenges. First, because it’s a new approach, state and district administration and programme implementers will need to be convinced and encouraged to support and implement this initiative across their region. It will be vital in building their capacity and undertaking hand-holding exercises for programme implementers at the state

August 1-7 is World Breastfeeding Week

W

‘Step Up for Breastfeeding: Educate and Support’

orld Breastfeeding Week (WBW) is an annual celebration which is held every year from 1 to 7 August in more than 120 countries. According to the 26 August data of WBW website, 540 events have been held worldwide by more than 79 countries with 488 organizations and 406,620 participants for the World Breastfeeding Week 2010. Organized by World Alliance for Breastfeeding Action (WABA), the World Health Organization (WHO), and UNICEF, WBW came up with the goal to promote exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months of life which yields many health benefits, providing critical nutrients, protection from deadly diseases such as pneumonia and fostering growth and development for the first time in 1991. World Breastfeeding Week was first celebrated in 1992 by WABA and is now observed in over 120 countries by UNICEF, WHO and their partners including individuals, organizations, and governments. WABA itself have been formed on 14 February 1991 with the goal to re-establish a global breastfeeding culture and provide support for breastfeed-

ing everywhere. WHO and the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) emphasize the value of breastfeeding for mothers as well as children. Both recommend exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months of life and then supplemented breastfeeding for at least one year and up to two years or more. WBW commemorates the Innocenti Declaration made by WHO and UNICEF in August 1990 to protect and support breastfeeding. Breast milk is the ultimate superfood for an infant. It is full of all the nutrients necessary for a baby’s health. It remains the primary and only food a baby has for the first six months of their life. It is proven that human breast milk reduces the risk of diseases and death among infants with low birth weights and premature babies. But under some unfortunate circumstances, some babies have to stay devoid of this nutritious diet. The factors responsible for this are the death of the biological mother, mothers being unable to lactate properly, and mothers abandoning babies, amid others. In such cases, what has proven to be a simple and effective way to fill the

gap are breast milk donations by new mothers and the milk banks. Vulnerable newborns across India and around the world are able to get access to human breast milk with the help of facilities, such as milk banks. New mothers who are lactating can donate their milk at these places which can be accessed by caretakers of babies who are unable to receive it from their own biological mother. These facilities provided by hospitals and nursing homes, proved to be of great service even during the Covid-19 pandemic where many infants were separated from their mothers due to many factors, including the latter being infected with the virus. According to a study published in the International Breastfeeding Journal in 2020, there are over 80 milk banks currently in India. It is a very noble act on the part of the new moms who come and donate their breastmilk for the infants in need. It has been helping save so many lives all across the globe. As we celebrate World Breastfeeding Week from August 1 – August 7, we must take out some time to appreciate this initiative. Aien Jamir, Shillong, Meghalaya

and district levels. For this, state technical support units (STSUs) have already been established in some states. Second, the tendering process should be expanded and advertised to allow diverse organizations in this segment to apply for consideration as PPSAs. At this point, very few non-government organizations (NGOs) end up applying because information on such contracting isn’t easily visible or is difficult to understand. Expanding the dissemination of such Requests for Proposals (contracting calls for bidders) and choosing relevant dissemination platforms might help. Third, it will be useful to explore opportunities for outputbased financing for PPSAs. This approach, which rewards individuals or institutions (in this case, PPSAs) after agreed-upon results are achieved and verified, can help assuage all stakeholders’ concerns. Care must be taken, though, to deploy this model in a well-considered manner. The metrics for payments to PPSAs—from ensuring notifications to conducting advanced diagnostic tests, HIV-diabetes testing, etc—may need to be calibrated from state to state by their varying requirements, considering how different geographies can present different on-ground

scenarios. Linkages can be explored with existing government initiatives such as the flagship Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PM-JAY), which aims to provide health cover of Rs.5 lakh per family per year for secondary and tertiary care hospitalization. Especially when it comes to more difficult-to-treat forms of TB, such as extra-pulmonary TB, the in-patient care services can be very steep. Therefore, including a TB care package in PM-JAY can augment the scheme’s utility for the common citizen. Finally, it is profoundly encouraging to see the government introduce flagship programmes such as the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (ABDM), which aims to digitize the country’s healthcare ecosystem and thereby enable the creation of an enabling ecosystem for fostering public-private collaborations. Such initiatives will undoubtedly help eliminate TB in India by 2025. Such efforts will ensure the country will keep up rapid progress towards achieving universal health coverage and quality healthcare for all. View on proposed limited departmental exam under DoSE

I

n compliance with the subject above to fill up the 56 vacancies of AHM/JEO through Limited Departmental Examination under School Education Department which is a novel policy of the department to revive the degrading many Government schools across the State by deploying efficient teachers to the school for better teaching and administration as well. Thus, set aside certain percentage of vacancies regarding AHM/JEO posts to be recruited through the NPSC on competency-based exam is justified on the part of the department when we see the prevailing condition of many pathetic Government schools in our State. As our society needs good leaders in all fields, the Government schools too need a competent leader to lead the school for quality education. It is assumed that the new promotional policy of the teachers might come up to cope up with the schools producing poor or nil results especially in the HSLC or other standard. In this connection, the department would be appreciated if equal attention is also given to both

the service length of 35 years or 60 years of age as a servant is going to retire on completion of whichever is earlier. Hence, a regular serving teacher who had granted 7th ROP scale having professional B.Ed degree and attained at least the age of 40 years or above be considered to sit for this competitive examination and not only considering 10 years of service as many teachers entered into service on the verge of expiring their service entry period through proper recruitment exam which will enable them to avail equal opportunity on ground of justice. The department is expecting to relook into the matters and rectified the conditions whenever necessary. Indeed, the proposed examination to be conducting under the NPSC which is not only for the interest of certain group of teachers or organization but for the interest of all on competent basis among the serving teachers where the exam is going to conduct mainly for the concern of thousands of poor students studying in Government schools in our State. Jabalpur hospital’s fire NOC had expired; four doctors booked for culpable homicide BHOPAL/JABALPUR, AUG 2 (PTI): The preliminary probe into the Jabalpur hospital fire tragedy has revealed several shortcomings regarding safety and it was found that the fire No Objection Certificate (NOC) of the facility had expired, Madhya Pradesh Home Minister Narottam Mishra said on Tuesday. He said police have registered a case of culpable homicide against four doctors-cum-owners of the hospital and its manager and arrested him, a day after the devastating blaze killed eight persons, including four patients. The four doctors are on the run and police have fanned out teams to nab them, a senior police officer said. Prima-facie, several shortcomings were found on the part of the hospital regarding fire safety. The preliminary probe has found that the fire No Objection Certificate (NOC) of the New Life Multispeciality Hospital had expired, Mishra said. “The FIR was registered by the Jabalpur police against four owners-cumdoctors of the hospital un-

School job scam: ED searches 2 more flats, nail art shop

India inks six pacts with Maldives to broad-base ties

KOLKATA, AUG 2 (PTI): Officials of the Enforcement Directorate (ED), probing the multi-crore teacher recruitment scam, on Tuesday conducted search operations at two flats and another shop allegedly linked to Arpita Mukherjee, a close aide of suspended TMC leader Partha Chatterjee. Sleuths of ED raided two flats in South Kolkata – one on Panditiya Road and the other in Madurdaha – during the day, along with another nail art shop in the northern part of the city, agency sources said. ED had earlier recovered around Rs 50 crore in cash, along with jewellery, from her two apartments in Tollygunge and Belghoria areas. Both Chatterjee and Mukherjee were arrested by the ED on July 23 in connection with its probe into the scam. They will be produced before a PMLA court again on Wednesday, with the 10day ED custody coming to an end. Earlier in the day, Mukherjee, on her arrival at ESI hospital in Joka for medical check-up, told waiting reporters that money was placed in her residences without her knowledge.

Kerala rains: Red alert in 10 districts, 6 deaths T H I RU VA NA N T H A PURAM, AUG 2 (PTI): A red alert was declared by the IMD in 10 districts of Kerala where incessant rains on Tuesday caused six deaths, landslides, rise in water levels and relocation of thousands to relief camps in various parts of the state. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a red alert in all the districts of the state barring Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta and Kasaragod, for August 2 and 3 and has predicted heavy rainfall in the state till August 5. The heavy rains led to six deaths -- one each in Thiruvananthapuram, Kottayam and Ernakulam districts and three in Kannur district -- resulting in a total of 12 rain-related casualties in the state from July 31 till date, the Kerala State Emergency Operations Center (KSEOC) said. Besides that, three people have also gone missing from various parts of the state during the day, it said. In view of the heavy rainfall and anticipating landslides, flash floods and other disasters, the state government opened 95 relief

camps across Kerala where 2,291 people have been relocated, KSEOC said. The heavy rainfall also damaged 126 houses between July 31 till date and of those 27 homes were completely destroyed, it said. In view of the red alerts issued by the IMD and the possibility of extremely heavy rainfall in the

state in the next few days, Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said the warning of very heavy rains in the state in the days ahead should be taken very seriously as continuous rainfall of more than 200 mm is likely to create a crisis. There is a need for vigilance and preparedness in the state in anticipation of natural disasters

like landslides, mountain floods, flash floods, and waterlogging in cities and low-lying areas, the CM said in a Facebook post. Vijayan also said that the Central Water Commission has issued a warning regarding the water levels of various rivers, like Pampa, Manimala and Neyyar, crossing the danger marks at several places.

NEW DELHI, AUG 2 (IANS): India and the Maldives on Tuesday signed six pacts in the field of cyber security, capacity building, housing, disaster management and infrastructure development. After holding talks with the visiting Maldivian President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said, “Threat of crime, terrorism and drug trafficking is serious in the Indian Ocean and close India-Maldives ties were important for peace in the entire region.” President Solih, who is on a four-day visit to India, said he and Prime Minister Modi have reiterated their firm commitment to combat the men-

Subcontinent (AQIS). The extremely close ties between the Taliban and al-Qaeda is evident from the fact that Zawahiri was stationed in a posh Kabul neighbourhood. This close Qaeda-Taliban tie is totally against Indian interests, especially in the backdrop of the global terror organisation’s intentions to target India. The Taliban providing safe haven to al-Qaeda may also be extended to Pakistan-based outfits such as the Jaish-e-Mohammad and the Lashkar-e-Taiba that primarily target India, the officials said. Separately, Indian security agencies assessed that infighting may intensify

ace of terrorism. Asserting that the India-Maldives relations are beyond diplomacy, Solih said that his country will remain a true friend of India. In a joint press statement, Solih said, “This

visit is a confirmation of close ties between the two nations.” Modi said that despite challenges posed by the Covid pandemic, cooperation between countries is taking a form of comprehensive partnership. He said that India has

been the first country to respond to any need or crisis of the Maldives. He underlined that India-Maldives partnership is not only working for the betterment of the people of both the nations but also becoming a source of stability. Besides participating in official programmes in New Delhi, Solih will also visit Mumbai for participating in business events. The island nation is India’s key neighbour in the Indian Ocean Region and occupies a special place in India’s Neighbourhood First Policy. In the past few years, overall bilateral relation between the two nations have witnessed a rapid growth.

Reacting sharply, Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh said, “The raids on Herald House, Bahadur Shah Zafar Marg are a part of the continued attack against India’s principal opposition -- Indian National Congress.” “We strongly condemn this vendetta politics against those who speak up against the Modi Govt. You cannot silence us!” he said. Reacting to Ramesh’s allegation, BJP spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla asked if the denial of any

within the Taliban as the Haqqani network, which is very close to al-Qaeda, might try to take revenge over the leaking of information about Zawahiri to the US authorities. An imminent concern for India is the fact that disenchanted al-Qaeda cadres may shift their allegiance to the Islamic State and its regional affiliate Islamic State -Khorasan Province (ISKP). Considering the field operational capabilities of ISKP to mount spectacular attacks, any possible tilt from Qaeda ranks to IS warrants a serious attention, officials said. Saif al-Adl, who is likely to succeed Zawahiri, is a veteran field expert who spearheaded infamous attacks, including the bombings in the US embassy in Kenya (1998). It is assessed that unlike Zawahiri, Saif al-Adl may organise more field campaigns for al-Qaeda to remain relevant and also to counter the attrition of its members to the Islamic State, they said.

what the ED has reduced itself to,” she alleged. The reality of the day is there are only two issues that matter in this country -- price rise and unemployment -- and no matter how hard the government tries, the Congress will continue to raise these relevant issues, Shrinate said. “There may be some people who may be intimidated by what your agencies can do, the Indian National Congress is certainly not one of those. We condemn it, we will fight it, but we will continue to expose the failures of this government because the future of our youth is at stake due to unemployment and every Indian is suffering and reeling under high prices,” she said. Congress MP Karti Chidambaram claimed that the ED has become a “weapon of mass destruction” and would be known as the “hatchet agency” of the government. He made these remarks while hitting out at the BJP government for the ED raids.

NEW DELHI, AUG 2 (PTI): The killing of Ayman al-Zawahiri is likely to deal a blow to al-Qaeda supporters and affiliates in India, officials said on Tuesday but expressed concerns over the Taliban sheltering him in Kabul saying such facilities may also be extended to terror outfits mainly targeting India. Zawahari, who took over as the leader of al-Qaeda after Osama bin Laden’s death in 2011, has been killed in a “precision strike” carried out by the CIA at a safe house in the Talibancontrolled Afghanistan’s capital Kabul. The killing of Zawahiri is likely to affect the morale of Qaeda supporters and cadres in India. Recently, they were conducting waves of propaganda campaigns and trying to rebuild the al-Qaeda organisational machinery in India, officials privy to the developments told PTI. This may also adversely hamper the momentum of its regional affiliates like the al-Qaeda in the Indian

press conference here, party spokesperson Supriya Shrinate said the raids on National Herald is a ploy to divert attention from price rise and unemployment. “In Independent India, there is perhaps no other governmental and no other place, where politics has sunk to this rock bottom. To settle petty personal scores, to intimidate India’s opposition, the Modi government is doing exactly what the British did during the freedom struggle. During the freedom struggle, the British had banned and had raided National Herald, that’s exactly what the Modi government is doing,” Shrinate said. “You have questioned the Congress President for three days, you have questioned the former Congress President for 50 hours. Either the ED is completely incompetent and has not been able to gather enough (evidence) or the ED has actually become the Election Department of the BJP and that seems to be exactly

NEW DELHI, AUG 2 (PTI): The Enforcement Directorate raids at the head office of the Congressowned National Herald newspaper here and other locations evoked a sharp reaction from the Opposition party which condemned the action as “vendetta politics”, even as the ruling BJP asserted that law would take its own course. The Enforcement Directorate (ED) raided the head office of the National Herald newspaper here and 11 other locations as part of an ongoing money laundering investigation, officials said, a week after it questioned Congress chief Sonia Gandhi. The searches were carried out under the criminal sections of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) to “gather additional evidence with regard to the trail of funds and they are against those entities who were involved in the National Herald-linked transactions”, the officials said.

India had become a fragile economy. Today there is a recovery from the pandemic, the second wave, the Ukraine war India’s currency is still strong, please keep it in mind in Amrit Kaal,” she said. Earlier, Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Chaudhary said the government is making efforts on the declining value of the Indian rupee. During the UPA from 2004-2014, he said the value of the rupee in a year was down 10-12 per cent, whereas during the NDA government in the last eight years since 2014, the decline in the rupee is much less. It is more to avoid the volatility and allow it to find its course. “India, like many other countries, is not pitching its currency at a level extraneously. So the ways and which we want to strengthen... the RBI and the Ministry are fairly engaged in it,” she said as members expressed concerns over the decline in the value of the Indian currency. On suggestions that non-resident Indians should be allowed to make remittances in foreign currency, she said it is not an assurance that the Ministry of Finance will give but she can

It is actually finding its natural course. The RBI is continuously monitoring it and intervening only if there is volatility. RBI interventions are not so much to fix the value of the Indian rupee because it is free to find its own course,” Sitharaman said. Earlier, TMC member Luizinho Faleiro claimed in the last six months, the rupee depreciated 28 times by 34 per cent and foreign reserves declined to USD 572 billion by mid-July. US will ‘pay the price’ if Pelosi visits Taiwan: China Who is Al Qaeda’s Ayman al-Zawahiri? Minister Ismail Sabri and Foreign Minister Saifuddin Abdullah. Press access around Pelosi has been tightly restricted and limited to a handful of short statements confirming meetings with Malaysian and Singaporean officials. The remainder of her itinerary includes stops in South Korea and Japan -- but the prospect of a Taiwan trip has dominated attention. Taipei has kept silent on whether they expect to roll out the red carpet. Multiple Taiwanese media outlets carried comments from deputy parliament speaker Tsai Chichang saying Pelosi was “very likely” to visit in the coming days. And Taiwan’s Liberty Times newspaper cited unnamed sources as saying she would land Tuesday night, then meet President Tsai Ing-wen the next day before departing in the afternoon. On Tuesday evening, Taiwan’s presidential office said its website was briefly offline for 20 minutes because of a DDoS attack that was halted. It was not clear why, but the office said it would up its monitoring in the face of “hybrid information warfare by external forces”.

WASHINGTON, AUG 2 (IANS): Ayman al-Zawahiri succeeded as the leader of the global terror group Al Qaeda after former US President Barack Obama took out the dreaded Osama Bin Laden in a planned attack in Abotttabad in 2011. Al-Zawahiri, who was killed in a US drone strike carried out by the CIA in Kabul on Sunday, was a top deputy to bin Laden before taking the helm of the group. Taliban spokesman Zabiullah Mujahid confirmed and condemned the attack on Twitter, calling it “a clear violation of international principles”. However, the 2020 Doha Agreement, which preceded US President Joe Biden administration’s highly criticized withdrawal of American troops from Afghanistan last year, called for the Taliban to combat terrorism within the country. Al-Zawahiri was also a doctor and founder of the Egyptian Islamic Jihad terror group, which later merged with the Al Qaeda, according to intelligence sources. BAG H DA D, AU G 2 (IANS): Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi has called for a national dialogue to settle the current political deadlock amid protests by supporters of rival Shia parties in Baghdad. In a statement released by his office, alKadhimi urged protesters to evacuate the government institutions and hold “a national dialogue” that involves all parties to “draw up a road map for a solution”, reports Xinhua news agency. On July 30, hundreds of followers of the prominent Shia cleric Moqtada al-Sadr began an open sitin in the Parliament building, rejecting the nomination of Mohammed Shia’ al-Sudani as the country’s Prime Minister on July 25 by al-Sadr’s opponents in the Coordination Framework (CF), an umbrella group of Shia parliamentary parties.

The helicopter took off from Uthal at 5:10pm on Monday and was supposed to land in Karachi at 6:05pm, but it lost contact with the air traffic controller, officials said. On Tuesday, Army officials and police were busy combing the area to locate the helicopter. Their efforts, however, were hampered due to the treacherous mountainous terrain and the damaged roads due to the floods in the region. U N I T E D NAT I O N S, AUG 2 (IANS): More than 1.2 million people currently remain displaced across Myanmar, including over 866,000 displaced by the conflict and insecurity since the February 2021 coup, said a UN spokesman. The remaining 346,000 people were displaced from previous conflicts, the majority of whom are in Rakhine state, Xinhua news agency quoted Stephane Dujarric, spokesman for UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, as saying. Inflation in commodity prices since May 2022, including food and fuel, is deepening people’s socioeconomic stress, he said. Together with local partners, the United Nations is trying to reach 6.2 million people with life-saving

assistance this year, said Dujarric. “We have reached around half of our target with at least one form of humanitarian assistance at mid-year, despite access constraints and funding shortfalls. To reach the remaining vulnerable communities, we need better access and additional funding, especially in light of inflation.” So far, the UN 2022 humanitarian response plan for Myanmar is only 13 per cent funded, leaving a gap of $719 million, he told a daily press briefing. All clusters are seriously underfunded, threatening their ability to respond to growing needs. If the funding dries up, so do UN operations, he warned.

SINGAPORE, AUG 2 (PTI): Former Sri Lanka president Gotabaya Rajapaksa, who fled his country amid massive protests against his government last month, was not being provided any privileges, immunity or hospitality, Singapore Foreign Affairs Minister Vivian Balakrishnan said. Rajapaksa fled to the Maldives on July 13 and reached Singapore the next day in the face of public revolt against his government’s mishandling of the economy. The 73-year-old leader emailed his resignation letter to the Parliament Speaker on July 14, soon after he was allowed by Singapore to enter the citystate on a “private visit”. “In general, the Singapore government does not accord privileges, immunity and hospitality to former heads of state or heads of government,” Balakrishnan said in a written reply to a question in parliament on Monday. “Consequently, former president Gotabaya Raj-

BEIJ ING, AUG 2 (AGENCIES): The United States will “pay the price” if House Speaker Nancy Pelosi visits Taiwan during her Asia trip, China warned Tuesday, as tensions between the two superpowers continued to soar, reports NDTV. The prospect of Pelosi going to Taipei, which would be the highest-profile visit by an elected US official in 25 years, has triggered increasingly bellicose warnings from Beijing that have set the region on edge. Pelosi, 82, has yet to officially confirm whether Taiwan is part of an ongoing Asia tour but US and Taiwanese media have reported it will happen. “The US side will bear the responsibility and pay the price for undermining China’s sovereign security interests,” foreign ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying said at a regular press briefing in Beijing. Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said “the US breach of faith on the Taiwan issue is despicable” in comments published on his ministry’s website Tuesday that did not specifically mention Pelosi.

Reverse engineers spotted this in development about a month ago, but as of this morning, some Twitter users have shared that they have gained access to this feature, reports TechCrunch. “This is part of an ongoing experiment in which we want to learn how providing more context about the frequency of an account’s tweets can help people make more informed decisions about the accounts they choose to engage with,” a Twitter spokesperson was quoted as saying. As per the report, in 2019, the Pew Research Center found that 10 per cent of Twitter users create 80 per cent of the tweets on the platform. The study also showed that the median user on Twitter only posts twice per month. As of last quarter, Twitter has 237.8 million monetizable daily active users. (IANS)

Sting slams Ukraine war, calls it ‘absurdity based upon a lie’

M

usician Sting believes the ongoing war in Ukraine is “an absurdity based upon a lie”. The ‘Englishman in New York’ hitmaker warned the invasion of the country from Russia is proof that democracy is under attack around the world as he took to the stage in Warsaw, Poland, reports aceshowbiz.com. The 70-year-old singer brought out Polish actor Maciej Stuhr to translate his statement, in which he said: “(Democracy is) in grave danger of being lost unless we defend it. The alternative to democracy is a prison, a prison of the mind. The alternative to democracy is violence, oppression, imprisonment and silence. “The war in the Ukraine is an absurdity based upon a lie. If we swallow that lie, the lie will eat us.” Due to its proximity to Ukraine, Poland has seen more refugees flock there since the war began on February 24 than any other country. Sting isn’t the only musician to use his platform

to protest against the war. Last month, 60-year-old Guns N’ Roses frontman Axl Rose branded Russian President Vladimir Putin a “callous, lying, murderous little man”. He tweeted: “I’d like to thank everyone for showing such love and support during the tour for the people of Ukraine and their noble and horrifying fight for freedom against an increasingly totalitarian regime ran by a callous, lying, murderous, little man with outdated ambitions and no regard for human life.” In March, Pink Floyd removed their music from “all digital music providers” in Russia and Belarus following the invasion of Ukraine. Guitarist David Gilmour, who has family in

Ukraine, also announced all of his solo works will be taken down. Pink Floyd said in a statement: “To stand with the world in strongly condemning Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the works of Pink Floyd, from 1987 onwards, and all of David Gilmour’s solo recordings are being removed from all digital music providers in Russia and Belarus from today.” Gilmour wrote in a separate social media post: “Russian soldiers, stop killing your brothers. There will be no winners in this war. “My daughter-in-law is Ukrainian and my granddaughters want to visit and know their beautiful country. Stop this before it is all destroyed. Putin must go.” (IANS)

The Next Blood Pressure Breakthrough: Temporary Tattoos pacting us,” says Roozbeh Jafari, PhD, a professor of biomedical engineering, electrical engineering, and computer science at Texas A&M and a co-author of the study. Revealing the Whole Picture, Not Just Dots At-home blood pressure monitors have been around for many years now. They work just like the blood pressure machines doctors use at their office: You place your arm inside a cuff, press a button, feel a squeeze on your arm, and get a reading. While results from this method are accurate, they are also just a moment in time. Our blood pressure can vary greatly throughout the day – especially among people who have labile hypertension, where blood pressure changes from one extreme to the other. So, looking at point-in-time readings is a bit like focusing on a few dots inside

of a pointillism painting – one might miss the bigger picture. Doctors may also find continuous monitoring useful for getting rid of false readings from “white coat syndrome.” Basically, this means a person’s blood pressure rises due to the anxiety of being in a doctor’s office but is not true hypertension.

Bottom line: The ability to monitor a person’s blood pressure continuously for hours or even days can provide clearer, and more accurate, insights into a person’s health. How Do Health Monitoring Tattoos Work? Electronic tattoos for health monitoring are not completely new. John A. Rogers, PhD, of North-

western University first put forth the idea of monitoring through temporary tattoos 12 years ago. Some concepts, such as UV monitoring tattoos, already had been adopted by scientists and put on the market. But the existing models weren’t suitable for monitoring blood pressure, according to Deji Akinwande, PhD, a professor of electrical

and computer engineering at the University of Texas at Austin and another coauthor of the study. “[UV monitoring tattoos] are very thick,” he says. “They create too much movement when used to measure blood pressure because they slide around.” So, the Texas-based research team worked to develop an option that was slimmer and more stable. “The key ingredient within e-tattoos is graphene,” says Akinwande. Graphene is carbon that’s similar to what’s inside your graphite pencil. The material is conductive, meaning it can conduct small electrical currents through the skin. For blood pressure monitoring, graphene promotes bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA), which is like the technology used in smart scales that measure body fat.

With e-tattoos, the thin layers of graphene stick to the skin and do not slide around, getting rid of “artifacts,” or bad data. The graphene e-tattoos can be worn on the skin for about a week – or roughly as long as the temporary tattoos kids love. Once the graphene captures the raw data, a machine learning algorithm interprets the information and provides results in units used for measuring blood pressure: millimeters of mercury (mmHg), commonly referred to as blood pressure “points.” How accurate are the results? The tests measured blood pressure within 0.2 ± 5.8 mmHg (systolic), 0.2 ± 4.5 mmHg (diastolic) and 0.1 ± 5.3 mmHg (mean arterial pressure). In other words: If this were a basketball player shooting baskets, the great majority of shots taken would be swishes and occasionally

a few would hit the rim. That means good accuracy. When Will E-Tattoos Be Available? The teams of Jafari and Akinwande are working on a second generation of their e-tattoo that they expect to be available in the next 5 years. The upgrade they envision will be smaller and compatible with smartwatches and phones that use Bluetooth technology and near-field communication (NFC) to transfer data and give it power. With these updates, e-tattoos for continuous blood pressure monitoring will be ready for clinical trials, and mainstream use soon after. “Everyone can benefit from knowing their blood pressure recordings,” Akinwande says. “It is not just for people at risk for hypertension, but for others to proactively monitor their health, for stress and other factors.” By Natalie Sabin

Beyonce to remove offensive ‘Renaissance’ lyrics after Ableist backlash

inspired an essay published on The Guardian in which writer Hannah Diviney wrote, “Beyonce’s commitment to storytelling musically and visually is unparalleled, as is her power to have the world paying attention to the narratives, struggles and nuanced lived experience of being a Black woman.... But that doesn’t excuse her use of ableist language.” According to ‘Variety’, Beyonce’s decision to remove the ableist lyric follows Lizzo’s decision to do the same. Lizzo used the same term in her song “Grrrls” off her latest album, ‘Special’. In the original track, Lizzo sang: “Hold my bag, b***h, hold my bag/ Do you see this s**t? I’m a spaz.” The new version of the song finds Lizzo singing “Hold me back.” (IANS)

The song includes the word “spaz” during a verse in which Beyonce sings: “Spazzin’ on that a**, spazz on that a**.” In the medical field, “spastic” refers to a disability that makes it difficult for people to control their muscles, especially in their arms and legs. The singer’s team confirmed to Variety that the lyric will be removed. “The word, not used intentionally in a harmful way, will be replaced,” a statement from Beyonce’s team reads. McCoy’s 6-wkt haul demolishes India in 2nd T20 Howzat! Three Arshdeeps on the field

BASSETERRE (ST KITTS), AUG 2 (IANS): West Indies left-arm pace bowler Obed McCoy produced one of the most impactful bowling performances in T20 International cricket history as he demolished India for 138 to guide the hosts to a series-levelling five-wicket win at the Warner Park on Tuesday (IST). The 25-year-old quick, egged on by a raucous crowd, produced the best-

ever figures by a West Indies bowler in the shortest format before the home side held its nerve in the final over to level the fivematch series at 1-1. McCoy ended with 6/17 from a brilliant fourover spell which was a mix of accurate cutters and changes of pace. Opener Brandon King then top-scored with 68 (52 deliveries) to inspire a successful West Indies chase. Devon Thomas ar-

rived at the back end and demonstrated his maturity and skills with a crucial unbeaten 31 off 19 balls which included a six and a four to take West Indies home in the final over. With West Indies requiring 10 runs from the last over, Thomas cleared the ropes at extra cover with the first legitimate delivery of the over from seamer Avesh Khan before slashing the next ball to the backward point boundary.

Gukesh stuns former World C’ship challenger Shirov MAMALLAPURAM, AUG 2 (IANS): Young Indian Grandmaster D Gukesh caused a biggest upset of the Round 5 at the 44th Chess Olympiad by defeating former World Championship Challenger Alexei Shirov as India B shocked Spain by 2.5-1.5 score here on Tuesday. Exhibiting a brilliant gameplay, Gukesh not only extended his unbeaten run at the prestigious event but also helped India B register an impressive victory against fourth-seeded Spain-team’s fifth successive win in the open section. It was Gukesh’s fifth victory on the trot in this event. Incidentally, after

this victory, he overtakes Vidit Gujrathi in live ratings to be the third highest rated player in India after Viswanathan Anand and Pentala Harikrishna. The game incidentally was an old Sicilian where Shirov tried an unconventional ninth move. Gukesh

was quick on the uptake and started pressing for victory after blunting out Shirov’s pieces. His King personally escorted one of his pawns to the queening square with the help of his two rooks, prompting Shirov’s resignation on the 44th turn in a position which was beyond repair. Adhiban B was also in fine fettle, downing GM Eduardo Iturrizaga in a strategic master piece while Nihal Sarin held Anton Guijar to a draw. India A and India C also notched up identical wins against Romania and Croatia respectively in other open section matches.

Meanwhile in the women’s section, India A also registered their fifth consecutive victory with Tania Sachdev once again bringing the winning point for her team. They beat France by 2.5-1.5 margin after Koneru Humpy, Harika Dronavalli Harika and R Vaishali had drawn their encounters. Indian women’s B team, on the other hand, lost to fancied Georgia with a 0-3 score while Team C held Brazil to a 2-2 draw. McCoy then returned in the 17th over to deceive Jadeja and collect his third scalp of the match. He then finished the job in his final over picking up the wickets of Dinesh Karthik (7), Ravichandran Ashwin (10) and Bhuvneshwar Kumar (1) to complete the rout. After the superb bowling in the first half, King led West Indies’ response with the bat as he struck eight fours and a couple of massive sixes as he dominated a 46-run, opening stand with Kyle Mayers (8). He added a further 25 for the second wicket with captain Nicholas Pooran who made 14 before holing out in the deep off off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin. This led to a minicollapse as four wickets fell for 53 runs.

BASSETERRE (ST KITTS), AUG 2 (IANS): There were more than one Arshdeep Singhs doing duty for India in the second T20 International against the West Indies here on Monday! Surprised? Apparently the lanky India pace bowler landed in St. Kitts from Trinidad with more than a handful of his jerseys, even as the luggage of several other teammates got delayed. Arshdeep had to part with a couple of his jerseys, which saw Suryakumar Yadav wearing the left-arm pacer’s shirt when he came out to bat. Later pacer Avesh Singh too came out wearing the jersey bearing Arshdeep’s name. CWI had cited unavoidable circumstances for delays in the arrival of team luggage from Trinidad into St Kitts. In a statement ahead of the start of the second T20I, CWI had said, “Due to circumstances beyond CWI’s control, there have been significant delays in crucial team luggage arriving into St. Kitts from Trinidad.” The delays in arrival of lug-

Later, Avesh Khan too was seen wearing the extra jersey of the left-arm quick. Social media went into overdrive, with a fan tweeting, “Today, 3 players wore jersey of a guy named Arshdeep. But the real lad @arshdeepsinghh performed best of all of them.”

CWG, DAY 5: India win gold in TT and Lawn Bowls; Thakur bags silver

India’s Lovely Choubey, Pinki, Nayanmoni Saikia and Rupa Rani Tirkey at a presentation ceremony after winning the Lawn Bowls Women’s Fours final match against South Africa. (PTI) (

BIRMINGHAM, AUG 2 (IANS): The Indian women’s fours team of Lovely Choubey, Pinki, Nayanmoni Saikia and Rupa Tirkey scripted history by winning the gold medal in lawn bowls at the Commonwealth Games 2022, here on Tuesday. The Indian team beat South Africa 17-10 in the final to win gold at Victoria Park in Royal Leamington Spa. It was an even start to the final, as India took the

lead after the first end but South Africa went ahead after the second. Thereafter, in-form Indian surged ahead to a 8-2 lead by the seventh end. But, it could not score a single point over the next four ends as South Africa roared back into contention, levelling the scores 8-8 after the 10th end. On the 11th end, India seemed to be ahead with three bowls to go but Nayanmoni Saikia rolled

too accurately, hitting the jack, which took it away from the Indian bowls and closer to the South Africans’, which gave them a 10-8 lead. India were in danger of losing further ground on the 12th end but skip Rupa Tirkey, with her two rolls, managed to push one South African bowl away, which gave India two points and got them level at 10-10. On the next end, India

took a potentially decisive 12-10 lead. With the jack rolling shorter than normal, the bowlers had to measure their rolls accordingly and a South African bowl hit the jack, taking it closer to two Indian bowls. The 14th end saw India open up a 15-10 lead as South Africa tried, and failed, to get closer to the jack or push any Indian bowls away. The distance between South Africa’s closest bowl and India’s

farthest was barely a few centimetres but the Indian bowl was adjudged to be nearer to the jack, giving them three crucial points. The 15th and final end saw India consistently get closer to the jack and when South Africa’s final bowl missed the jack, it gave India two more points and confirmed a historic gold medal. On the other hand, it was South Africa’s second-consecutive silver medal in the women’s fours at the CWG. Earlier in the day, the India versus New Zealand rivalry, which began in the women’s fours semifinal, added three more chapters at Birmingham 2022. The trio of Pinki, Rupa Tirkey and Tania Choudhary beat New Zealand 15-11 in their first sectional match of the women’s triples. However, the Kiwis got back in the women’s pairs as the duo of Lovely Choubey and Nayanmoni Saikia lost 18-9 in their first sectional match. Mridul Borgohain also began his men’s singles campaign with a 21-8 loss to New Zealand’s Shannon Mcllroy in section D. The women’s triples team will be in action against England later tonight while the men’s fours team will play their first match in lawn bowls at CWG 2022.

Weightlifter Thakur strikes silver Harjinder wins bronze in weightlifting BIRMINGHAM, AUG 2 (PTI): Indian heavyweight lifter Vikas Thakur added yet another Commonwealth Games medal to his kitty, winning a silver in the men’s 96kg here on Tuesday. The seasoned Thakur lifted a total of 346kg (155kg+191kg) to finish second and claim his third CWG medal across three editions. It was Thakur’s second silver, having finished second in the 2014 Glasgow edition as well. In Gold Coast, he had returned with a bronze. Samoa’s Don Opeloge 381kg (171kg+210kg) bettered his 2018 silver by clinching gold with a record breaking performance. Fiji’s Taniela Tuisuva Rainibogi walked away with the bronze with a total effort of 343kg (155kg+188kg). Thakur, a five-time Commonwealth Championships medallist, had three clean lifts of 149kg, 153kg and 155kg to be in joint third-position after the snatch round. In the clean and jerk section, Thakur started off with a 187kg lift, which he

executed perfectly. His second attempt was of 191kg , which took some effort but the Punjab lifter was able to pull it off and celebrated it with a ‘thigh-five’ made popular by Indian cricketer Shikhar Dhawan. With a silver assured, Thakur went for 198kg, a kilogram more than his personal best, in his third attempt but was unsuc-

cessful. But the event belonged to Opeloge, who smashed the Games record in snatch, clean and jerk and total lift. The 23-year-old Samoan celebrated his stellar show with a groovy dance at the end. It was heartbreak for home favourite Cyrille Tchatchet who failed to register a single legal lift in clean and jerk.

BIRMINGHAM, AUG 2 (IANS): Indian weightlifter Harjinder Kaur claimed a bronze medal in the women’s 71 kg competition at the Commonwealth Games here despite not lifting her best in an event in which England’s Sarah Davies broke a plethora of records to storm to the gold medal. The 25-year-old from Mehas village near Nabha in Punjab lifted 93 in snatch and 119 in clean and jerk for a below-par total of 212 kg in the competition and at one time thought that she had lost out on a medal as Alexis Ashworth of Canada, the eventual silver medallist, lifted her season’s best of 123 kg in clean and jerk to shoot up to 214 in the standings. Harjinder was also lucky as Joy Ogbonne Eze of Nigeria suffered a washout, failing to lift 125 kg in clean and jerk in three attempts. As she had lifted 100 kg, seven kilos more than Harjinder, the Indian would have been relegated to the fourth position if the Nigerian had succeeded. Har jinder’s bronze medal was the third medal for India on Monday at the Commonwealth Games adding to the silver and bronze won by judokas

Jarman claims 4th gymnastics gold to break record

LO N D O N, AU G 2 (AGENCIES): England’s Jake Jarman claimed a fourth gold on his Commonwealth debut to become the most successful English male gymnast at a single Games. Jarman - at his first major senior championships - matched the number of golds won by Claudia Fragapane in 2014. Compatriot Giarnni Regini-Moran took silver behind Jarman in the vault. Having also won team, all-around and floor gold, Jarman, 20, surpasses the three Commonwealth titles won by Max Whitlock in 2014. Jarman was as composed as ever with two neat vaults and looked relieved after a difficult final effort, before celebrating with a delighted Birmingham crowd. Regini-Moran, on his 24th birthday, put in an assured performance but could not match his team-mate.

Jake Jarman

He was however rewarded for his efforts as the Arena Birmingham crowd sang happy birthday after he completed his second vault. Jarman was the only gymnast to attempt a vault with a 6.0 degree of difficulty and it paid dividends as he deftly twisted through

the air to pull it off. He finished with a total score of 14.916, with ReginiMoran scoring 14.633 and Australia’s James Bacueti taking bronze with 14.283. Nor ther n Ireland’s Ewan McAteer finished sixth, with Wales’ Emil Barber eighth. England have

Shushila Devi and Vikas Yadav. This took India’s overall tally to nine medals -- three gold, three silver and three bronze. Harjinder’s bronze medal was the seventh medal India had won in the weightlifting arena so far in this Games. However, it looked like India would have a barren day in weightlifting after bagging six medals in the previous two days. Earlier in the morning, Ajay Singh lost out a bronze medal by one kilogram and the way Harjinder started with a no lift in her first attempt in snatch, it looked like India was in for another setback in the final medal event of the day at the National/Exhibition Centre (NEC) here. Harjinder, who hails from a farming family and has built up her muscles by

working on the chaffing machine at home, started with 90 kg for her first attempt but she failed. She lifted it in her second attempt and raised her tally to 93 kg in her third and final attempt. That put her in the fourth position behind Sarah Davies (103 -- a Commonwealth Games record in the snatch), Eze of Nigeria at 100, and Australia’s Kiana Rose Elliott, who totalled 94. Alexis Ashworth was also in the mix at 91 kg after failing to lift 94. Harjinder waited for things to settle down in the clean and jerk and opened with 113 in her first attempt while Davies missed 120kg as did Eze at 125. She jumped to the top position but was pushed down soon as Sarah Davies lifted 120 in her second attempt.

1-1. Harmeet and Sathiyan had little difficulty in getting past Yong Izaak Que and Ye En Koen Pang in the opening doubles. Sathiyan had given India a 2-1 lead with a 12-10, 7-11, 11-7, 11-4 victory over lower-ranked Pang. The stand-out performance came from India’s third player, Harmeet. Sharath had struggled to contain Clarence but Harmeet went on the offensive against the left-hander and ensured that he did not get room to go for his powerful forehand winners. Harmeet’s backhand was also on fire as he won majority of the long rallies. In the first singles, Sharath went down 7-11, 14-12, 3-11,9-11

against Clarence. Whenever, the Indian placed the ball deep on Clarence’s forehand, the return was a winner. Two net chords helped Sharath in the second game but Clarence comfortably won the next two. India had beaten a stronger opponent in Nigeria on Monday with Sharath stunning world number 15 Aruna Quadri. But his loss against a much lower ranked opponent on Tuesday showed rankings did not matter much in a multi sporting event. India had won the team gold for the first in Melbourne 2006 before repeating the feat in Gold Coast four years ago.
