PM calls for ‘one earth, many efforts’ Launches global initiative ‘Lifestyle for Environment (LiFE) Movement’ NEW DELHI, JUN 5 (PTI): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday launched the ‘Lifestyle for the Environment (LiFE) Movement’, a global initiative, and asserted that its vision is to live a lifestyle that is in tune with our planet and does not harm it. Those who live such a lifestyle are called proplanet people,” he said in a video address, and added that “Mission LiFE” borrows from the past, operates in the present and focuses on the future. Giving the slogan of “one earth, many efforts””, he said India is ready to lend its support to actions to make environment better and improve global wellness.

Ex-PAN calls for immediate solution to Naga issue DIMAPUR, JUN 5 (NPN): With the negotiations between government of India and the Naga Political Groups in its 25th year, ExParliamentarian Association of Nagaland (Ex-PAN) maintained that the investment of 25 years on the political negotiations was more than enough for Nagas to have its logical end. Among several resolutions adopted during its executive committee meeting held on June 4 at Dimapur, Ex-PAN president Joshua Sumi and general secretary Supongmeren Jamir said that the house called for an immediate solution to the protracted Naga political issue, which must be solely determined by the outcomes of dialogues between the Government of India and the Naga negotiator. Therefore, Ex-PAN said it upheld the negotiations which concluded on October 31, 2019 between the Centre and the Naga negotiators. “The Govt. of India must give the alter call at the earliest so that the Naga political solution becomes a reality,” Ex-PAN stated. Ex-PAN asked the facilitators including the Core Committee of Naga Political Issue (CCoNPI) to be cautious enough either for “over indulgence or under indulgence in respective facilitations”, particularly unwarranted and irresponsible comments tending to mislead the general public in the media. With the launch coinciding with World Environment Day, Modi said our planet’s challenges are well-known, and the need of the hour is human-centric, collective efforts and robust actions that further sustainable development. “Reduce, reuse and recycle are the concepts woven in our life. Circular economy has been an integral part of our culture and lifestyle,” Modi said, noting that gods and goddesses in India have plants and animals associated with them, and nature equated with divinity. “Mahatma Gandhi talked about a zero-carbon

lifestyle. In our daily life choices, let us pick the most sustainable options. Let us follow the principle of reuse, reduce and recycle. Our planet is one but our efforts have to be many. One earth, many efforts,” he said. India has been able to do many good things for the environment, with its forest cover increasing and so is the population of lions, tigers, leopards, elephants and rhinos, he said. He added, “Our commitment to reach 40 per cent of installed electric capacity from non-fossil fuel-based sources has been achieved, nine years ahead of sched-

ule. We have achieved 10 per cent ethanol blending in petrol, five months ahead of the November 2022 target. This is a major accomplishment given that blending was hardly 1.5 per cent in 2013-14 and 5 per cent in 2019-20.” The Prime Minister’s Office had earlier said the launch will initiate “LiFE global call for papers,” inviting ideas and suggestions from academics, universities and research institutions to influence and persuade individuals, communities and organisations across the world to adopt an environment-conscious lifestyle.

Gov extends ‘Phom Day’ greetings DIMAPUR, JUN 5 (NPN): Nagaland governor Prof. Jagdish Mukhi has extended greetings to the people of Nagaland and Phom brothers and sisters on the occasion of Phom Day. Mukhi said “this important landmark in Phom history reminds us of the commitment of the people to shun violence.” He said the declaration of June 6 as Phom day (Peace day) marks the importance that the land was flourishing based on the spirit of universal brotherhood. “Peace, forgiveness and unity are the essence of this significant day and most importantly, our youth should continue to honour the commitment of non-violence made by our pioneering leaders,” Mukhi stated. Pangnyu: State health & family welfare minister S. Pangnyu Phom also extended greetings on the occasion of the 70th Phom Day. (Cont’d on p-8)

‘Politicisation’ reason for poor results in govt schools: RPP DIMAPUR, JUN 5 (NPN): Rising People’s Party (RPP) has cited politicisation of bureaucracy, including principal director (PD) system, attachment of teachers to VIPs/SDEOs/DEOs, proxy teaching system, etc, as the main reasons for poor performance of government schools. Reacting to a clarification of the outgoing PD regarding poor performance of government schools, which it termed as thoroughly unconvincing but still welcome, the party in a press release said it awaited the response of the adviser of Department of School Education (DoSE) and the

State government to address the issue of abolition of the post of PD. However, it termed the PD’s COVID -19 excuse for the department’s “worst performance in 6 years” as “worst excuse of the year”. It pointed out that the pass percentage from 2017 which was 42.60% had come down to 36.63% in 2022. RPP said an average person could see that the pass percentage over the years was consistently the same (slightly worse in 2022), which meant the reason for the abysmal condition of education was something else. While the PD post

must have been en-cadred by the Ministry of Personnel as explained by the outgoing PD, RPP suggested abolishment of post by the State government immediately. Once the PD post was abolished, the party reasoned that the director of Department of School Education would exercise full powers and responsibilities and, since the director was a departmental cadre officer, he or she would give his or her best for having risen through the ranks as teachers initially. It urged the DoSE adviser to address the burning issue immediately. Claiming that DoSE

had the highest number of employees (more than 26,000), the party said the PD’s wild claim that there were no sufficient eligible officers for the posts of SDEOs and DEOs was an insult to all employees and officers of the department. Perhaps this attitude of the PD and his inability was the reason why the department has gone to the dogs, it added. Claiming that there were other important reasons too, RPP asked what was the department’s policy regarding proxy teachers and whether it had adopted “zero tolerance” measures. (Cont’d on p-8)

Avoid ‘loose remarks’ on Naga political issue: TR Zeliang to Naga leaders DIMAPUR, JUN 5 (NPN): Seeking to cap statements in the media and debates on social media over the Naga political issue, chairman of United Democratic Alliance (UDA) T.R. Zeliang has appealed to all Naga leaders to refrain from airing their views “based on personal speculation of the Indo-Naga political issue in public domain.” Zeliang in a statement said that as chairman of UDA, he was reminding “over-ground Naga leaders who are under oath of allegiance to the constitution of India” that they must refrain from “making loose remarks on the matter.” Zeliang said it is understood that every Naga leader has the right to give suggestion and advice but this should not be “shaped out of one’s desire to make an impact on the state political scenario and at the expense of the Indo-Naga political issue.” While noting that lawmakers and public leaders had the right to speak out for the common welfare of Nagas, Zeliang reminded that, in the 1960s “overground groups were part of the negotiation” and today the Naga nationalist groups are part of the negotiation. He also said in 1960, the negotiation was between the government of India and the Nagas where the 16 Point Agreement was executed between the two parties. However, the agreement was “without the consent of the undivided Naga National Council (NNC)” and therefore, the armed conflict continued till today. Zeliang said the UDA government was focussed on

“inclusiveness-which means all the Naga nationalist groups, should be part of the long-awaited Peace Accord” in order that the same mistake was not repeated. “Any unwarranted statement” by Naga leaders “outside the parameters of the ongoing negotiation” between the Naga negotiating groups and government of India, “will mislead the Naga people” even before the draft agreement is formulated by the government of India and place before the Naga leaders, Zeliang said. On scepticism over the secrecy of the competencies, Zeliang said it cannot be believed that such “a complex and sensitive issue” will be inked secretly and imposed on our people” . He said as desired by the Nagas and trusting that once the negotiating parties have arrived at a common ground, they “will surely consult all the apex tribal leaders and state government before inking the final accord.” He said it was “widely understood, that the two sides have agreed to most of the competencies and have arrived at a meeting point”, therefore, it was premature to conclude that some key issues, that Nagas aspired for, “will not be included in the Agreement.” Zeliang dismissed as absolutely wrong “speculations that post-solution, the present state of Nagaland will cease to exist” and speculation that Ntangki National Park will be deforested “by the government of India and allotted to Naga nationalist workers for resettlement” as “outside the box of negotiation.” Zeliang said this was

confirmed “from both sides” who said such a demand was never placed before the government of India by either of the negotiating group and that it was “totally a work of fiction” without an iota of truth. He said even if such a demand came up in future, the government of India “will never agree to such a proposal, as we were made known by the Indian Representative of the Peace Talks.” He said all 60 legislators of Nagaland are committed to “pave way for smooth transition, as and when a final settlement to the protracted Indo-Naga issues takes place”, but the demand for resignation of “democratically elected members at this juncture by individuals and certain section of society is uncalled for.” In view of the above, Zeliang said the present UDA government requests all Naga organisations and Naga leaders to avoid issuing public statements “based on speculation and hearsays” since this was “bound to confuse and mislead the Naga people at this crucial juncture when the IndoNaga peace talks are at the threshold of a final breakthrough.” He said after formation of UDA government under the leadership of chief minister Neiphiu Rio, the coalition began working “more vigorously towards Naga political settlement by consulting negotiating parties and central leadership like the prime minister and home minister” adding that presently, “things are moving with positivity.” (Cont’d on p-8)

DAYO backs govt’s decision to remove check-gates NVCO against review of blanket ban on tax DIMAPUR, JUNE 5 (NPN): While extending support to the State government notification of May 19, 2022 that ordered removal of all check-gates, which curbed illegal collection of money, the Dimapur Ao Youth Organisation (DAYO) however appealed to the government not to succumb to any pressure groups or various vested interest groups that tried to confuse people for their ends. In a statement, DAYO vice president Imkongsungkum Aier and general secretary Mangyang Jamir said that if any genuine modification or changes had to be made in the notification, appropri-

Says appropriate stakeholders should be consulted for any modification to May 19 order ate stakeholders, especially business and transport associations, should be taken into confidence including leaders from various tribal apex bodies and communities of Dimapur. DAYO termed the move as one of the best public welfare decisions made in recent memory, claiming that the citizens were already reaping

its fruits as prices of most essential commodities had drastically reduced. The youth organisation said the historic step taken by the government in tackling the issue of illegal and multiple taxation would go a long way to make a vibrant economy and a revenue-generating State. Calling upon local entrepreneurs to take this opportune moment to take control of the economy as they compete in an atmosphere of free trade and enterprise, DAYO reiterated its resolute stand against any monopoly or syndicate practices that would not allow new and young entrepreneurs to venture into business.

In order to make Dimapur safe and secured in collaboration with the authority, DAYO said it had been operating helpline no. 8974851911 with monitoring members to response to genuine grievances. Mentioning that it was the bounden duty of every rightthinking citizen and genuine civil organisations to extend their support and cooperation for such decisive and bold notification, the youth organisation appealed to the general public to stomp their feet and say enough was enough to bear the burden of hyper inflation due to illegal collection of taxes. (Cont’d on p-8)

DIMAPUR, JUN 5 (NPN): Nagaland Voluntary Consumers’ Organisation (NVCO) said it was shocked to see the appeal made by some major Dimapur-based frontal organisations to partially reconsider the blanket ban on tax levied by Dimapur Municipal Council (DMC). In a press note, NVCO said the state government was compelled to remove all police check-gates, paycounters lying on highways except inter-state gates as this was the only solution to stop illegal taxation/cash collection at check gates and on any highways, keeping in mind that there was no provision to charge or collect any other tax/cash as Nagaland state has already implemented the Goods & Services Tax (GST). Instead of appealing for partial

reconsideration of the blanket ban, NVCO said denizens of Dimapur must come out stronger to support the government’s order, taking note of how various transport unions/associations had called for chakka jam/strike not to enter Dimapur due to forceful and illegal tax/cash collection, while on many occasions drivers and handymen were physically assaulted for not paying to their demands. While strongly urging the state government to not reconsider its decision in any circumstances, NVCO said that the reconsideration of one district would paralyse all other district as it would demoralise the so-called District Inspection Team and would also tantamount to contempt of court (Gauhati High Court, Kohima Bench’s order).

AG A RTA L A , J U N 5 (PTI): Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha on Sunday described the upcoming byelections as an acid test for the ruling BJP and hoped that voters will give a befitting reply to those who necessitated the “untimely polls”. By-elections to Agartala, Town Bardowali (West Tripura district), Surma (Dhalai) and Jubarajnagar (North Tripura) assembly constituencies are scheduled to be held on June 23 and results will be declared on June 26. Assembly elections to the 60-member House will be held early next year. “It would have been better had the by-elections been avoided as assembly elections will be held within the next six months,” Saha told reporters. The dentist-turnedchief minister, who took over the baton from Biplab Kumar Deb in May, is contesting from Town Bardowali seat. “Voters will give a befitting reply to those for whom the by-election was necessitated,” Saha said in reference to turncoats. Sarma uploaded a letter purportedly written by a person named Utpal Baruah, of JCB Industries, owned by the CM’s wife, to the Mission Director of National Health Mission (NHM), Assam, in March 2020. My wife hasn’t committed a crime, she tried to help Assam at the time of its biggest crisis,” Sarma said. “Throwing muck at others will not be accepted. You will face legal consequences,” he said. Sarma on Saturday had threatened to file a criminal defamation case against Sisodia for alleging corruption in Assam government giving contracts to his wife’s firms and son’s business partner to supply PPE kits above market rates when the pandemic was raging in the country in March 2020. Sisodia, referring to media reports at a press conference in New Delhi on Saturday, had said that while the Assam government procured PPE kits for Rs 600 a piece from other companies, Sarma gave urgent supply orders to the firms of his wife and son’s business partners for Rs 990 a piece. On June 1, two digital media organisations, in a joint investigative report, claimed that the Assam government had placed four Covid-related emergency medical supply orders, most likely without following proper process.

ITANAGAR, JUN 5 (PTI): Residents of several villages along with family members of 48 active insurgents in Arunachal Pradesh’s Longding district have pledged not to concede to ransom demand of militants, an official release said. They took the pledge during a security meeting organised by the Longding Battalion of Assam Rifles (AR) on Saturday. During the meeting, issues related to the security in the district were discussed in view of kidnapping and detention of locals by NSCN K-YA, a banned outfit. Over 130 village chiefs, gaon burahs (village headmen), g ram panchayat chairpersons, Zila Parishad members and officers of the district administration attended the meeting, the official release said. T h e v i l l a ge r s a l s o unanimously decided not to allow any fresh recruitment by the militant organisations in future from their respective villages and the family members of the active insurgents assured that they would make sincere endeavours to convince them to surrender. Sarma tagged an old tweet by Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal in which he urged BJP MP Gautam Gambhir to arrange for PPE kits from anywhere “immediately”, after the former India cricketer had pledged a total of Rs 1 crore from his MP LAD fund for procurement of medical equipment. “Delhi CM suo moto offered to buy PPE kits from anywhere without tender. Why?” Sarma tweeted. “Does his Deputy CM think the CM is corrupt as he asked someone to arrange PPE kits from somewhere immediately, and said that Delhi Govt will buy them? ‘Cong-mukt’ to ‘Cong-yukt’: AAP on MLAs joining BJP Militants are attacking civilians to

CHANDIGARH, JUN 5 (PTI): A day after four senior Congress leaders joined the BJP here, the Aam Aadmi Par ty on Sunday said the BJP which talked of a “Congress-mukt Bharat” is itself becoming “Congress-yukt”. Addressing a press conference, AAP Punjab unit chief spokesperson Malvinder Singh Kang accused the BJP of adopting double standards and said it had levelled various charges against many of the Congress leaders who joined it on Saturday. “BJP talks about ideology. Has it failed to create leadership in Punjab for so many years or are its leaders not competent that it has to take Congress’ kachra (garbage),” he alleged. Fo r m e r m i n i s t e r s and Congress leaders Raj

Malvinder Singh Kang

Kumar Verka, Balbir Singh Sidhu, Sunder Sham Arora and Gurpreet Singh Kangar joined the BJP. Fo r m e r C o n g r e s s M L A Ke w a l D h i l l o n and former SAD MLAs Sarup Chand Singla and Mohinder Kaur Josh also joined the BJP.

Kang said when the BJP came to power at the Centre it talked of a “Congress-mukt Bharat” (Congress-free India). “But going by the trend of the past few years, the reality is the opposite and the BJP is becoming Congress-yukt,” said Kang

while referring to the BJP inducting several leaders from the grand old party over the years. On opposition parties targeting the Bhagwant Mann-led gover nment over alleged worsening law and order situation in Punjab, Kang said whatever incidents have occurred, the Punjab Police has been proactively following and investigating them so that the culprits are punished. Referring to singer Sidhu Moosewala’s killing, he said an SIT is already conducting a thorough probe. Replying to a question, Kang said that Punjab Police is competent to carry out a thorough probe in the incident, but at the same time the government will positively consider the demand of the family if it wants probe by a central

agency. On the joining of four former ministers on Saturday, Kang said the BJP had inducted “rejected leaders” into its fold. About former minister Sunder Sham Arora, Kang claimed BJP leader Tikshan Sud had levelled serious allegations of cor r upt practices against him. Likewise, other BJP leaders had also targeted Balbir Sidhu, who was the health minister in the then Amarinder Singh-led government, over alleged corrupt practices, he said. “The people of Punjab know their reality. They have already been rejected by people in the polls,” Kang said. “BJP says they are against corruption, nepotism. But their double s t a n d a r d s h av e b e e n exposed,” said Kang.

provoke security forces: J&K LG Sinha

S R I NAG A R , J U N 5 (PTI): Militants are attacking innocent civilians in “desperation to provoke security forces”, Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha said on Sunday, as he appealed to the people of the Union territory to isolate terror elements to promote peace. Addressing the ‘One Ear th, Shared Future’ programme organised by the forest department on the World Environment Day here, Sinha said Jammu and Kashmir is witnessing another kind of pollution -- terrorism -- “exported by our neighbouring country and it is threatening our social harmony”. “Our neighbour is polluting J-K by spilling the blood of innocents... Terrorists are targeting innocent men, women

and even children. Society m u s t s p e a k u p n o w. Communities must come together as one entity to fight this menace,” the Lt Governor said. He said the militants were attacking innocent civilians in “desperation”. “They are resorting to such killings to provoke security forces so that they will do something similar in desperation,” he said. However, he assured the people of Jammu and Kashmir that the administration will not take action against any innocent person. “It has been the policy of J-K administration that our security forces will not take action against any innocent person... But, the way terrorism is used as a weapon for killing the innocent civilians, the

administration and the security forces will do their jobs with promptness. I appeal to the people to condemn such elements. It is your national duty and only then will the peace be established in J-K,” he said. Terrorism has no place in society, he said, adding, I call upon every citizen to isolate terror elements, expose their brutality. “It is the fundamental duty of every citizen towards the nation to protect and promote peace.” Sinha said the police and security forces are fighting the menace of terrorism with restraint and fairness and saving innocent lives. “Our forces will keep responding effectively and firmly resolved to finish d e s t r u c t ive t h r e a t o f terrorism,” he added.

NEW DELHI, JUN 5 (PTI): Ahead of the June 10 Rajya Sabha elections, Congress president Sonia Gandhi has appointed senior party leaders, including Mallikar jun Kharge and Bhupesh Baghel, as observers. While Kharge has been made the observer for Maharashtra, Baghel and Rajeev Shukla have been made observers for Haryana, and Pawan Kumar Bansal and T S Singh Deo for Rajasthan. The Congress is seeking to ensure that its candidates win the Rajya Sabha (RS) elections in Haryana, Rajasthan and Maharashtra, while the BJP has put its weight behind independent candidates in Haryana and Rajasthan. AICC general secretary Ajay Maken is the Congress candidate from Haryana, where two seats have fallen vacant. The Congress and the BJP are likely to get one seat each, but the BJP has backed media baron Kartikeya Sharma as an independent. Sharma is the son of Venod Sharma and sonin-law of former Haryana Speaker Kuldeep Sharma. Both are considered close to former Haryana chief minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda. The Congress needs 31 votes to win the seat and has as many MLAs. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is banking on crossvoting. For the four Rajya Sabha seats in Rajasthan, the Congress has fielded three candidates -- Randeep Surjewala, Mukul Wasnik and Pramod Tiwari.

Social media under scanner

I

t has taken over a year for the Centre to take a call on the inherent weakness of its 2021 Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules by proposing to constitute a grievance appellate panels to take a final decision on social media takedowns in its draft amendment to the 2021 IT rules. As per the draft notification, intermediaries have to acknowledge suspension, removal or blocking of any user or user account or any complaint from its users in the nature of request for removal of information or communication link within 24 hours and dispose of the complaint within 15 days. In the case of any complaints in the nature of request for removal of information or communication link carrying defamatory, obscene, pornographic, invasive of another’s privacy, libellous, false and untrue information, those should be redressed within 72 hours of the reporting, according to the draft notification. In 2021, the central government notified new, stricter guidelines for social media intermediaries that will make it mandatory for platforms such as WhatsApp to aid in identifying the “originator” of “unlawful” messages. Social media organisations such as Twitter, Facebok and YouTube were required to take down unlawful of defamatory messages in their platforms that serve to create hatred, animosity and social unrest. Having received numerous complaints of either non-compliance or slow compliance, the Centre plans to set up an appellate committee to look into appeals filed by individuals against the decisions of grievance officers of social media platforms. Besides, the panel has to dispose of the appeals within 30 days of receiving them and its decision will be binding on the intermediaries or the large social media companies concerned, according to a notification to amend the Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021. Under the rules, significant social media intermediaries -- those with over 50 lakh users - are required to appoint a grievance officer, a nodal officer and a chief compliance officer. These personnel have to be residents in India. Since the implementation of the rules in May last year, various social media platforms, including Facebook, have been coming out with monthly compliance reports. In its compliance report for April, mobile messaging platform WhatsApp said it banned over 16 lakh accounts of Indian users in April to prevent harmful activities on the platform. There has been a rise of around 37.82 per cent in hate speech on social media platform Facebook and 86 per cent jump in violent and inciting content on Instagram in April, as per the monthly report released by Meta that include Facebook and WhatsApp. Over the years, the increasing instances of misuse of social media by criminals, anti-national elements have brought new challenges for law enforcement agencies. These include inducement for recruitment of terrorists, circulation of obscene content, spread of disharmony, financial frauds, incitement of violence, public order etc. These concerns have been raised from time to time in various forums including in the Parliament and its committees, judicial orders and in civil society deliberations in different parts of country. Such concerns are also raised all over the world and it is becoming an international issue. Notwithstanding cries over government overreach, users have to blame criminal elements who abuse freedom for leading to such a situation.

DailyDevotion God’s Assurance

He Himself has said….So we may boldly say… —Hebrews 13:5-6 My assurance is to be built upon God’s assurance to me. God says, “I will never leave you,” so that then I “may boldly say, ‘The Lord is my helper; I will not fear’ ” (Hebrews 13:5-6). In other words, I will not be obsessed with apprehension. This does not mean that I will not be tempted to fear, but I will remember God’s words of assurance. I will be full of courage, like a child who strives to reach the standard his father has set for him. The faith of many people begins to falter when apprehensions enter their thinking, and they forget the meaning of God’s assurance— they forget to take a deep spiritual breath. The only way to remove the fear from our lives is to listen to God’s assurance to us. What are you fearing? Whatever it may be, you are not a coward about it— you are determined to face it, yet you still have a feeling of fear. When it seems that there is nothing and no one to help you, say to yourself, “But ‘The Lord is my helper’ this very moment, even in my present circumstance.” Are you learning to listen to God before you speak, or are you saying things and then trying to make God’s Word fit what you have said? Take hold of the Father’s assurance, and then say with strong courage, “I will not fear.” It does not matter what evil or wrong may be in our way, because “He Himself has said, ‘I will never leave you….’ ” Human frailty is another thing that gets between God’s words of assurance and our own words and thoughts. When we realize how feeble we are in facing difficulties, the difficulties become like giants, we become like grasshoppers, and God seems to be nonexistent. But remember God’s assurance to us— “I will never…forsake you.” Have we learned to sing after hearing God’s keynote? Are we continually filled with enough courage to say, “The Lord is my helper,” or are we yielding to fear?

NAGALAND POST, DIMAPUR MONDAY, JUNE 6, 2022

India’s trade with USA better than with China T

he Indian economy is growing; GDP numbers are improving so are tax numbers, exports and a supposed wonder shows India having better trade with the US than China. The numbers are interesting – GDP growing at 4.1 percent in the last quarter of 2021-22, corporate tax rising though yet not to the level of 2010-11of 3.9 percent and inflation giving a boost to GST collections at a record Rs 1.68 lakh crore in April surpassing the Rs 1.5 lakh crore mark for the first time since the introduction of the tax regime in 2017. It is Rs 26000 crore higher than the March collection of Rs 1.42 lakh crore. The finance ministry attributes this to its tightened compliance and crackdown on GST evaders and fake bills, which the traders say is not possible. The GST collection may not represent the actual economic activity. A study by a group Ambit says that one of the key reasons for record collections was the surge in imports, which rose 54 percent yearon-year in 2021-22 driven by higher commodity prices and which made integrated GST on imports the largest

contributors of GST growth. On the domestic inflation also the report says the high retail and wholesale prices pushed GST collections up. Nominal GDP growth and GST collections have a very strong correlation. That means the surge in prices contributed majorly to higher GST collections. That is a matter of concern and busts the myth that higher tax revenue is an indicator for a better economic activity. The flip side is that such high tax collections could also add to further inflation. It also impacts the purchasing power of the common man. There is another aspect. India’s merchandise trade is growing at $ 418 billion exceeding the centre’s target by about 5 percent and a 4 percent growth over the previous year. It has grown with China and US. Of late, the Federation of Indian Exporters’ Organisation (FIEO) has said that India’s trade with the US surpasses that with China. The trade with the US touches $ 119.42 billion against $ 80.51 in 2020-21. India has trade surplus with the US of $ 32.8 billion. The FIEO maintains

that India-China bilateral trade was $ 115.42 billion. China counters that saying total trade is at 125 billion. It only shows that the trade level with US and China are growing. India exports high value diamond, precious stones along with IT services to the US. The major items of import from China are computer hardware, electronic components, organic chemicals and drug intermediates. There are problems with farm product exports. India tea exports decline 6.8 percent to 195million kg fetching Rs 5246 crore in 2021 despite a Shivaji void by Sri Lanka. Tea Exporters Association chairman A Kanoria says it has high pesticide content. Similarly Indian wheat is also rejected by Turkey for detection of Indian Rubella disease. Apart from these it also should be noted that in pre-globalised India many shocks were domestically absorbed by a robust parallel economy and through insulation of the system from the possible malignant impact. In the new world the neutral countries also

are forced to pay for the sin of the others. India has not much exposure to Ukraine. It is neither a part of NATO. Its relations are good with the US and Russia. India is neither a provocateur for the war nor it wants sanctions. It suffers for sanctions on Russia and Iran. These are causing global inflation and India can do little but suffer. The crude oil basket prices because of the war have risen to $ 115.9 per barrel on May 30 against an average of $ 97.2 in March. This may cause further price upset. Similarly tax numbers confirm Sarkar profit-led recovery. Corporate tax collections have increased 55 percent. It reflects that recovery is led by large groups at the cost of smaller competitors. It means smaller firms are at a loss. That’s reality. But can India rethink of how the safety valves worked and the means to reintroduce them for the good of the poor people whose numbers have doubled during the pandemic and have to survive on doles – a drain on resources to keep the

people survive in a tricky situation. Centralisation of the transactions through banks has added to the costs which cash economy used to absorb. Can we move away from the banking transactions to save the banks? Yes, such dependence on banks makes it vulnerable to severe cost burden that is not the intention of the banking system. The concern is genuine but the path is opaque. Interestingly enough a free gift like LPG cylinders to 80 million people have not helped them so much. The soaring prices to around Rs 1000 have made it prohibitively expensive to savour the benefits. It also is a lesson that alternate being used by the people should not be replaced if the system cannot afford it. Multiple fuel, multiple modes of transport and parallels are necessary for the economy to remain functional. It now extends to create a total dependence on electricity supposedly considered to be “clean”. Unfortunately, it shifts its polluting points centralized away from cities but does not reduce carbon

footprint or pollution. It only shifts the location. Alternate energy has its problem of meeting the peak need. It is subject to natures vagaries. Solar is good but it does not work in a cover of continuous fog or cloud, hydel helps city homes have bright lights but it continues to devastate the countryside with man-made flash floods to maintain the level of comfort. It heaps miseries on people in remote areas by periodically devastating their economies. The cost on GDP is too high but is ignored as disaster reliefs cannot afford it. To maintain high GDP growth India needs a strong domestic market and quality products for the export market. A combination of domestic and export market is a necessity to create the buffer for economic shocks. Still there are HSBC and Barclays fear turbulence ahead because of high prices, falling overall profitability and weaker global economy. The RBI has started raising rates and may again revise growth projections as the US Fed may resort to tighter moves and OPEC decides July strategies. The journey is yet to be smooth.

Post-mortem

T

wo days after Rahul Bhat was killed in a government office in Jammu and Kashmir on May 12, the building was reopened and all his colleagues, officers and subordinates trooped in and have been working silently since then. None of his colleagues or seniors even condemned the killing, or showed any sympathy, according to Bhat’s family, which has been pointing fingers at them. TV actress Amreena Bhat was shot dead by terrorists and her 10-year-old nephew injured in his arm at Chadoora in Kashmir’s Badgam district. Her family and relatives shed tears and some even took to social media. But no one came out to protest -- neither her colleagues, nor her neighbours. All went silently back to their usual routine. Not long ago, the picture of little Safa in bloodsoaked clothes, lying alone on a stretcher in a hospital and staring blankly, went

Kashmir and the sin of silence

viral. Safa got a bullet injury when her father, J&K Police constable Saifullah Qadri, 45, was killed by terrorists outside their home in Soura, on the outskirts of Srinagar. The family is struggling to come to terms with this. Safa’s pictures was shared a thousand times, and a few concerns were expressed, but silence has descended on her locality. This silence is deafening. As one stands on the Shankaracharya hill in Srinagar, a vast expanse of homes interspersed by greenery and water bodies lie ahead. The surrounding silence seems meditative from above, but as one moves on the roads and the streets below, things don’t seem normal. Three decades ago, it wasn’t like this. Even a small incident would evoke curiosity and neighbours and unknown people would come to help and stand by the victim’s family. Today,

there is no reaction, no empathy; the only overwhelming presence is that of silence. In all the incidents of terrorism, whether a Muslim is killed or a minority community member, or a non-local is targeted, silence seems to be allpervasive. No one protests, no one comes on roads to raise slogans and no one points out the identity of the killers. The neighbours, colleagues and even the affected family’s relatives choose to remain quiet. In a majority of these terror incidents, the perpetrators just come, kill and escape without any hindrance, and there never seems to be any eyewitness. Rahul Bhat’s is a case in point. He was working in a secured government building with a CRPF picket nearby. Despite the security and the checks, the killers walked straight into his office and pumped five bullets into him while he was at his desk.

Several questions are bound to arise: Why were the weapon-wielding men not detected as they entered the building? How did the killers know where Rahul was sitting? When they were leaving, why did no one raise an alarm or alert the picket guards? Everyone in Rahul’s office has slipped into a questionable silence, indicating either collusion or fear. Similar questions arise each time a targeted killing happens in Kashmir. “Your very silence shows you agree” Perhaps, the answers to these disturbing questions are to be found in this quote from Euripides, one of the greatest exponents of Greek tragedy, Targeted killings can be ‘successfully’ executed only when pinpointed information is available and those present at that time keep silent. On October 7, 2021, terrorists entered the Gover nment Boys Higher

Secondary School, Idgah, Srinagar, and fired pointblank at the principal, Supinder Kour, 46, a Sikh, and a Kashmiri Pandit, Deepak Chand, 38, who had migrated back to the Valley from Jammu. No one protested the killings and the school went back to its business a few days later. All the targeted killings or other terror acts are always claimed by various terror outfits. Security officials say that targeted killings are difficult to prevent, but if there is a public outpouring of anger, then pressure can be built up against the perpetrators. In Kashmir, however, any act of terror fails to generate the widespread public outcry it should. Recently, when the separatist Yasin Malik was convicted in a terror funding case and sentenced to life imprisonment, protests and incidents of stone pelting took place. Though the police arrested ten people near Malik’s home, the fact

‘Call To Oneness’ : 75 Years of Naga Students’ Federation

“T

he feeling of oneness became stronger among Naga students studying outside Naga Hills and thus, the urge for united actions” - ZakuTsukru, former President, NSF. Naga Students’ Federation was formed at a time when there were no proper educational institutions anywhere in the then Naga Hills and the few that got higher education also had to study from outside the Naga homelands. In this respect, it is worth mentioning that the first elected President of the Naga Students’ Federation in October 1947, Late. Zasinihu Zinyu did his early education at Kohima but had to do his graduation from Guwahati Cotton College. After which he was serving as a Teacher at Kohima Government High School for want of qualified teachers. And when he became President of the NSF, he was not a student by then. This occasion of the first NSF Conference which ushered in the formation of NSF as a common platform of all Naga students was also addressed by non other than the first elected President of the Naga National Council (NNC), Late. T. Aliba Imti, immediately two and a half month after declaring the historic Naga Independence on

the 14 th of August 1947. This instance goes to say beyond any doubt the exigencies of the time to have an organized movement at all levels of the Naga society. It is equally noted, that in the following years after the formation of the Naga Students’ Federation, its functioning were interrupted at various stages owing to the most turbulent political upheavals in the entire Naga country, where community elders, religious leaders, students, women and youth had to bear the brunt of Indian military atrocities, making even the NSF impossible to function. But the call for the Naga nation to survive was more important for the NSF than to stay away from the risks, even in the face of death, for which the Federation was revived again and again in responding to the call of the Naga nation. Ever since from 1971, with the election of Mr. Vibizotuo Yalie a.k.a. Abi Yalie, the Federation has continued without any interruptions till date. Nevertheless, the Federation has faced its own “Ups and Downs” with additional affiliation of many new units, while also experiencing withdrawal of older units owing to various circumstances and compulsions. Needless to say, but the Federation with the past glory is hardly at its best. However, this occasion

of 75 Years of its existence has provided us the best opportunity to reflect on where we have not been able to live up to the visions of our pioneers and to re-invigorate ourselves as leaders and pillars of tomorrow to at least live up to the expectations of the coming immediate generation of young Nagas, knowing that the Naga society is presently caught at its deepest crisis of our political aspirations and the fragmentations of our society. This challenge, therefore, instantly calls the present day Nagas and more particularly, the Naga Students’ Federation to live up to its objectives, with the realization that the answers to all these problems could well be found in our TOGETHERNESS. The need of the hour for Naga people at this juncture is, indeed, Oneness. We have agreements with others but we are unable to agree each other amongst us to have a common approach towards Naga political settlement. The spirit of Oneness in us is missing and this is the time to revive that feeling of Oneness to overcome all ill feelings. The NSF was founded on the Naga peoples aspiration to live together as one people, and we must live as one people irrespective of geographical locations wherever we are or we may be, and we must not allow ourselves to assimilate

into India and Myanmar political culture. Notwithstanding the present divisions and differences prevailing in Naga society, if we have any reason to celebrate today, then it is still the feeling of Oneness as Naga people. It is a matter of fact that no Naga, be it from any geographical direction or be it from any group or party, disowns his or her origin and blood line as Naga, rather all are proud to be Naga. That is the strength that still holds us together. That is the power of Oneness in Nagaism. That helps us to recover our loss and helps us again to resume our common journey of Reconciliation. As we celebrate the formation and remarkable journey of togetherness for the last 75 years, the NSF urges all concerned groups engaged in peace making to resume its noble journey of reconciliation and call upon every Naga to reconcile among us first before we reconcile with others. That must be the process of Peace making and celebration of Oneness in responding to the call of the day, Call to Oneness. Kuknalim ! Issued by - Planning Committee, 75 Years of Naga Students’ Federation. Kohima, June 04, 2022

is that people did attempt to gather in support of a convicted terrorist. If people haven’t forgotten to react, then why do they so selectively and not in all the terror-related cases? No one can forget the lynching of DSP Ayub Pandit outside the gate of the Jamia Masid in Srinagar on June 22, 2017, when people were observing Shab-e-Qadr. The victim’s family and friends did try to raise their voice but were silenced by the ‘on-ground workers’ (OGWs) of the various terror outfits. A few videos showing this had gone viral and were much discussed. Security analysts have been blaming the rampant radicalisation in the valley for the support being extended to terrorists. More than the fear of the gun, it is radicalisation that is helping the terror outfits and their sponsors in Pakistan to keep the terror momentum high in the valley. Deepika Bhan

Reader’s Post Sir,

Real victory to Nagas is Unity

‘Unity in Diversity’, is key principle of any thriving society. Varying cultures, languages, identities, lifestyle, ideas, all work together in search of progress, development, good-life, peaceful society and acceptance is common interest. For which we need visionary and optimistic leaders and not narrow mind or who talk about division within. Many tribes make the Naga whole and not otherwise. No one tribe should impose one’s authority over the other tribes in any means. Every tribe must welcome and tilt forward to make Nagaland second to none among Northeast Sates, across India and over the world. All tribes are created equal and not one tribe more or less. I believe that Nagas will rise to be great Naga society one day soon. We are proud-full Naga tribes but a small group of people in this big world. That we must struggle together, unite together in unison and walk together to build Nagaland. And stop talking about divisions. In any given society, there are ups and downs. So, when we talk about logical faults or facts (not opinions) of govt., politicians or leaders, we tend to receive it negatively. It is usually because we are immensely regress towards emotional attachment rather than taking it on rational maturity. Unnecessary hatred or ism has no place for a society that wants to progress. The tribal division mentality must be overwhelmed by imbibing the feeling of oneness and brotherhood. “The time is always right to do what is right”, Martin Luther King Jr. A right leader will unite the clashing society to coexist together and build a great society. REMARKS AGAINST PROPHET MUHAMMAD:

BJP suspends Nupur, expels Naveen Kumar Jindal Naveen Kumar Jindal

Nupur Sharma

NEW DELHI, JUN 5 (PTI): The BJP on Sunday suspended its national spokesperson Nupur Sharma and expelled its Delhi media head Naveen Kumar Jindal for their alleged derogatory remarks against Prophet Muhammad, as it sought to defuse the row over the issue. Amid protests by Muslim groups over the remarks,

the party also issued a statement aimed at assuaging the concerns of minorities and distancing itself from these members, asserting that it respects all religions and strongly denounces the insult of any religious personality. While Sharma’s comments during a TV debate aimed at the founder of Islam have drawn the ire of

Muslim groups, Jindal also posted objectionable tweets, deleted later, and has been accused of often posting inciting comments. Their comments also sparked a Twitter trend calling for boycotting Indian products in some countries. A communication to Sharma from the party’s disciplinary committee secretary Om Pathak said she has expressed views contrary to the party’s position on various matters, which is in clear violation of its constitution. “Pending further inquiry, you are suspended from the party and from your responsibilities, assignments if any, with immediate effect,” it said. A communication from Delhi BJP chief Adesh

Gupta to Jindal said his views on social media vitiate communal harmony and are in violation of the party’s fundamental beliefs. He has acted against the party’s policies and ideology, Gupta said. “Your primary membership is immediately terminated and you are expelled from the party,” Gupta said. Jindal told PTI that he had tweeted asking a question to those attacking and insulting Hindu deities and it was not aimed at hurting the religious sentiments of any community. Before cracking the whip on the two members, the party also issued a statement underscoring its respect for all religions and

their revered figures. Party general secretary Arun Singh said in a statement that the party is strongly against any ideology which insults or demeans any sect or religion. The BJP does not promote such people or philosophy, he said. The BJP statement, however, made no direct mention of any incident or comment. Sharma’s remarks have drawn protests from Muslim groups. The statement announcing action against Sharma and Jindal also made no particular reference to their controversial remarks. Singh said, “During the thousands of years of history of India every religion has blossomed and flourished.

Not government’s views but of fringe, India clarifies to Qatar DOHA/NEW DELHI, JUNE 5 (IANS): India has clarified to Qatar that some offensive tweets it had raised are not the government’s view but of fringe elements. Indian envoy Dipak Mittal made the clarifications in a meeting at the foreign office in Qatar. In response to a media query regarding statement issued by Qatar MOfA on an offensive tweet in India, the Spokesperson of the Embassy of India in Qatar said, “Ambassador had a meeting in the Foreign Office in which concerns were raised with regard to some offensive tweets by individuals in India denigrating the religious personality. Ambassador conveyed that the tweets do not, in any manner, reflect the views of the Government of India. These are the views of fringe elements.” “In line with our civilisational heritage and strong cultural traditions of unity in diversity, Government of India accords the highest respect to all religions.” “Strong action has already been taken against those who made the derogatory remarks. A statement has also been issued by concerned quarters emphasizing respect for all religions, denouncing insult to any religious personality or demeaning any religion or sect,” the statement said. “Vested interests that are against India-Qatar relations have been inciting the people using these derogatory comments. We should work together against such mischievous elements who aim to undercut the strength of our bilateral ties.”

BJP’s action aimed at intl audience: Omar S R I NA G A R , J U N 5 (PTI): NC vice-president Omar Abdullah on Sunday said the BJP “suddenly waking up” to denounce the insult of any religious personality has nothing to do with having “offended” the sentiments of Muslims in the country but is aimed at an international audience. The National Conference leader’s remarks came after the BJP, seeking to defuse a row over allegedly controversial remarks made by its spokesperson Nupur Sharma against Prophet Mohammed, said it respects all religions and strongly denounces insult of any religious personality.

JAIPUR, JUN 5 (PTI): Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot along with six Congress MLAs who had expressed resentment over some issues reached Udaipur, where the party legislators are putting up at a hotel ahead of the Rajya Sabha polls amid fears of horse-trading. The ruling Congress in the state also submitted a complaint to the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) on Sunday, alleging poaching attempts by the Opposition BJP. The elections to four seats of the Rajya Sabha from the state are scheduled for June 10. While the Congress is set to win two of the seats, it requires the support of Independent MLAs and the legislators from other parties to win a third seat. The six MLAs who accompanied the chief minister to Udaipur included those who in 2019 had defected to the Congress from the BSP. Earlier on Saturday night, the MLAs met Gehlot at his residence in Jaipur and held discussions, party sources said on Sunday.

Avoid ‘loose remarks’ on Naga political issue: TR Zeliang to Naga leaders

ing its northward journey and if it does not cool off, then it may hurt sentiment of markets. FIIs are still in selling mode, though the momentum has slowed down a bit. However, there is a risk of further selling if the rupee weakens due to a rally in crude oil prices, he added. Last week, the BSE Sensex advanced 884.57 points or 1.61 per cent. “With earnings season behind us, focus would be on the upcoming MPC’s monetary policy review meet, which is scheduled during June 6-8. Markets have already priced in another hike citing sticky inflation. However, focus would be on commentary amid updates of a favourable monsoon. “ B e s i d e s, p e r f o r mance of global markets and movement in crude will also be in focus. On the macroeconomic front,

participants will be eyeing IIP data on June 10,” said Ajit Mishra, VP – Research, Religare Broking Ltd. Yesha Shah, Head of Equity Research, Samco Securities, said inflation being a key factor will be the central point of all discussions this week as China and US inflation data will be released, apart from RBI’s policy meeting. “Markets are likely to remain in a broader range as we continue to monitor global cues, including geopolitical developments, crude oil price movement as well as institutional flows. “RBI’s monetary policy meeting this week will be a key event that will be tracked by investors,” said Siddharth Khemka, Head – Retail Research, Motilal Oswal Financial Services Ltd.

(From p-1) He said the UDA government has conveyed the sentiment of the Naga negotiating groups to the central leadership and that government of India “should not change its stand from what had been committed to the Nagas in written through R.N. Ravi or A.K. Mishra” as both represented the government of India at different periods. Zeliang also conveyed the message to the Naga negotiating groups and the government of India that both parties “should not back down from what has been committed to each other” during the last 25 years, either verbally or in writing, so that Naga people can expect the talks “to come to a logical conclusion at the earliest.”

(From p-1) The party alleged that thousands of teachers were concentrated in district headquarters as they were attached to VIPs/SDEOs/DEOs, while there were “dual service teachers” (appointed under DoSE but working in private sectors and earning dual salary), excess teachers, etc, all of which had profoundly affected the foundation of lakh of students. And if the reason for the deficit of assistant headmasters and headmasters was because of “court cases between different groups of teachers” as cited by the PD, then the party said it only highlighted the poor management of the department by HoD, AHoD and adviser. Because of this “politicisation” of DoSE by the State government, the party claimed that government school students had a very weak foundation. Basically the government played with their lives, it added.

(From p-1) Further stating that if at all the government of India was to use the service of Asam chief minister in the “business of mediation”, Ex-PAN said “we may have to unavoidably accept him, if otherwise the involvement of the Assam chief minister in the political negotiation at the behest of the CCoNPI is

uncalled for.” It reminded that Naga political issue was not an issue of law and order nor can the CCoNPI undermine it. The house also pointed out that the Naga negotiators entered into the political negotiations with government of India “on their own volition with the objective of resolving the

WC holds consultative meet with TCL leaders (From p-1) The signatories said that the clarity and transparency on the political and administrative aspects that would bring positive transformation in the lives of Arunachal Pradesh Nagas and other communities in TCL, was acknowledged. TCL leaders, in solidarity with the

urgent expression of the Naga people everywhere for political settlement, urged upon WC, NNPGs to usher in honorable and acceptable political solution to all Nagas at the earliest. The delegation also wholeheartedly urged Government of India to expedite solution on the basis of October 31, 2019 concurrence.

27 injured in bus accident near Tsiesema

(From p-1) Sharing his account about the whole incident, he said he had known the driver for a long time and vouched for him as an experienced driver. Corroborating the account of the other passengers, he said their bus was held up unexpectedly for close to 5 hours at the landslide area at Wokha. Later in the afternoon, a communique from Chieswema garrison of 5 sector Assam Rifles said they reached the site of the accident at around 7:30 a.m. and tended to the injured victims. Four of the seriously injured passengers were given first aid at the spot and later all the injured passengers were shifted to Kohima for treatment.

DAYO backs govt’s decision to remove check-gates (From p-1) DAYO also declared that it would not be a silent spectator but play an active role to see that this historic decision brought the much-needed change at this time of transition in the society. DAYO further reaffirmed its stand on “One Government, One Tax” as people’s mandate to eradicate unabated taxation. “As long as we are under the Constitution of India, we should abide by the GST Act of 2017 that implemented ‘One Nation, One Tax’, DAYO stated.

NEW DELHI, JUN 5 (PTI): The RBI’s policy decision would be the major event driving trading sentiment in the equity market this week, while global cues, foreign funds movement and crude oil prices will be the other key factors to watch out for, analysts said. Markets have been witnessing a rebound recently. However, the move lacks decisiveness amid lingering challenges like global policy tightening due to soaring inflation and geopolitical tensions, they added. “RBI policy, global macro numbers and crude oil prices will set the trend for this week. BEIJING/JIUQUAN, JUN 5 (PTI): China on Sunday successfully launched three astronauts on a six-month mission to complete the construction of its strategically significant space station this year to further its dream to emerge as a major space power. Hours after reaching the designated orbit, the Shenzhou-14 spacecraft carrying three astronauts, Chen Dong, Liu Yang and Cai Xuzhe, successfully docked with the orbiting core module of the space station called Tianhe and cargo crafts attached to it, the China Manned Space Agency (CMSA) said. The spacecraft lifted off from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center in northwest China. Minutes later, the official at the ground control declared the mission a “great success”, saying the spacecraft has reached its designated orbit. The crew members of the Shenzhou-14 are in good shape and the launch is a complete success, the CMSA declared. State police spokeswoman Ibukun Odunlami said the gunmen attacked the church with explosives, leaving an undisclosed number of worshippers dead. “It’s still premature to say exactly how many people were killed. But many worshippers lost their lives while others were injured in the attack,” she told AFP. A witness, who gave his name as Abayomi, told AFP at least 20 worshippers had died in the attack. “I was passing through the area when I heard a loud explosion and gunshots inside the church,” he said. He said he saw at least five gunmen on the church premises before he ran away for safety. Gun and bomb attacks are rare in Ondo state, but Nigeria’s military is battling a 12-year-old jihadist insurgency in the northeast, kidnapping gangs in the northwest and separatist agitation in the southeast.

LAGOS, JUN 5 (AFP): Gunmen with explosives entered a Catholic church in southwest Nigeria’s Ondo state on Sunday, killing “many” worshippers and wounding others, the government and police said. The violence at St. Francis Catholic Church in Owo town happened during the morning service in a rare attack in the southwest of Nigeria, where jihadists and criminal gangs operate in other parts of the country. No group claimed responsibility for the attack. The motives and the number of casualties were not immediately clear, but President Muhammadu Buhari condemned the “heinous killing of worshippers”. Ondo state governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu said in a statement it was a “vile and satanic attack” and appealed to the security forces to track down the assailants.

Mokokchung Unit of the Nagaland RMSA Teachers' Association (NRMSATA) 2016 batch applauds the remarkable performance of RMSA upgraded schools in Mokokchung district in the recently declared HSLC examination- 2022. Out of the 12 Government schools that could secure 100%, 7 schools are from Mokokchung district. Some schools have been consistently showing exceptionally better results compared to private schools. Those 7 schools are- GHS Yaongyimsen Compound, GHS Phangsang, GHS dibuia, GHS Khar, GHS Unger, GHS Saring and GHS Longjang that has been producing 100% results for the past 5 years. The Government of the day has made considerable strides in improving access to education, increasing school enrolment and reducing the number of out-of-school children. Yet, most of the government schools in Nagaland, especially RMSA upgraded schools suffer shortage of teachers. despite being underpaid, half- yearlysalaried, discriminated, RMSA teachers have been working relentlessly- taking more than 4 classes a day just because there is not enough teachers in the school- in making sure their students get quality education. The results speak volumes about the contributions that are being made by them in educating the “leftover children” in some of the poorest communities in Mokokchung district. Mokokchung Unit of Nagaland RMSA Teachers’ Association-2016 congratulates all the students and teachers; and also thank all the teachers for their perseverance and dedication. 1st Test, Day 4: Root leads Eng to victory over NZ

LONDON, JUN 5 (IANS): Joe Root finished unbeaten on 115 and also crossed the 10,000-run mark in the longest format of the game as England wrapped a fivewicket victory over New Zealand on day four of the opening Test at Lord’s on Sunday. With Ben Foakes (32 not out) playing an important role from the other end, Root helped England knock off the remaining 61 runs to take a 1-0 lead in the threematch series. The victory also marked the winning start of Ben Stokes-Brendon McCullum era as captainhead coach in Test cricket for England. With a flick through leg-side for a brace against Tim Southee, Root completed his 26th Test

months and five days, Root has reached 10,000 Test runs landmark at exactly the same age as Cook - making the English pair the jointyoungest players to reach the milestone. Other batters to reach the milestone

include Sachin Tendulkar, Ricky Ponting, Jacques Kallis, Rahul Dravid, Kumar Sangakkara, Brian Lara, Shivnarine Chanderpaul, Mahela Jayawardene, Allan Border, Steve Waugh, Sunil Gavaskar and Younis Khan. Resuming from 216/5 under overcast skies and needing 61 runs with five wickets in hand, England avoided any dismissals as Root and Foakes settled quickly. As Foakes got the runs through boundaries, Root, resuming from 77, entered the 90s on the back of good running between the wickets and a crisp straight drive. Root swiftly brought up his century off 156 balls, to thunderous applause from fans, home as well as away dressing rooms.

Root smacked Southee for three boundaries, including the last one pulled fiercely through mid-wicket, to seal an outstanding win for England after see-saw first three days. It also meant Root put a full stop to chances of the second new ball coming for New Zealand’s crafty bowling attack. Root left the field to rapturous applause from the crowd, going a little emotional on his way back to the dressing room on an unforgettable day for the exEngland skipper. Brief Scores: England 141 in 42.5 overs and 279/5 in 78.5 overs (Joe Root 115 not out, Ben Stokes 54, Kyle Jamieson 4/79) beat New Zealand 132 in 40 overs and 285 in 91.3 overs by five wickets

Fabio Quartararo

BA RC E LO NA J U N 5 (AGENCIES): Yamaha rider Fabio Quartararo extended his lead at the top of the MotoGP standings with a dominant victory at the Catalunya Grand Prix in Barcelona. Home favourite Aleix Espargaro threw away second place by celebrating a lap early thinking he had finished the race, ending in fifth. Jorge Martin took full advantage to finish as the runner-up, with Johann Zarco in third. Earlier this season Espargaro won his first MotoGP race at the 200th attempt and he sits second in the championship. The race started with a crash between Takaaki Nakagami and Francesco Bagnaia. Espargaro, of Asprilla, began in pole ahead of Ducati’s Bagnaia and Quartararo, but the latter beat both to the first turn and never looked back. Italian Bagnaia, along with Nakagami, was forced out of the race, costing him dearly in the championship race. He currently sits fourth, 41 points off the pace set by Quartararo. The Frenchman says he targeted the first corner, which proved pivotal to his victory.

PANCHKULA, JUN 5 (IANS): Daughter of a tea stall vendor, Kajol Sargar’s only connection with sport until three years ago was her daily visits to a local gymnasium to watch her elder brother Sanket train as a weightlifter. The 16-year-old from Sangli in Maharashtra also watched in awe as he steadily rose up the ranks to become one of India’s top lifters; but that didn’t inspire her enough to take up the sport. All that changed in 2019, when she saw Rupa Hangandi, also from Sangli, clinching the gold medal in the Khelo India Youth Games in Pune. “My brother is more than five years older than me. I never really talked sport with him before,” Kajol Sargar said after becoming the first gold medallist in the Khelo India Youth Games 2021 here on Sunday. “It was only after learning about Rupa Hangandi’s success in the Khelo India Youth Games that I felt that I should also try weightlifting,” she revealed. Kajol, who now trains under Mayur Sinhasane, lifted a total of 113 kg in the women’s 40kg category to kick-off Maharashtra’s march towards the top of the medal’s tally.

Nadal beats Ruud to clinch 14th French Open title

PARIS, JUN 5 (IANS): World No 5 Rafael Nadal clinched his 14th French Open title and a recordextending 22nd Grand Slam trophy after beating Casper Ruud 6-3, 6-3, 6-0 in the final of the tournament, here on Sunday. By earning a 22nd Grand Slam crown, the Spaniard has moved further clear of Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer in the Grand Slam race, with the Serbian and Swiss tied on 20 major titles. It is the first time Nadal has won the Australian Open and Roland Garros trophies in the same season and he is now level with countryman Carlos Alcaraz on a Tour-leading four titles in 2022 after improving to 112-3 at the clay-court major. In front of a raucous crowd on Court Philippe Chatrier, the 36-year-old produced an intense and aggressive first-set performance, hitting his forehand with heavy topspin to out-

manoeuvre the Norwegian and move ahead. After making a slow start to the second set, the Spaniard rallied from 1-3 by returning to basics. He hung in points, won the longer exchanges and produced an array of stunning passing shots off both wings to take further control, before racing clear in the third set to secure another memorable victory after two hours and 20 minutes. Nadal, who will rise to No 4 in the ATP Rankings

on Monday, moved past Top 10 stars Felix AugerAliassime, Novak Djokovic and Alexander Zverev to set a first ATP Head to Head meeting with World No 8 Ruud. Following his triumph over the Norwegian, the Spaniard has become the third player to earn four Top 10 wins at a Grand Slam since the ATP Rankings started in 1973. Mats Wilander at Roland Garros in 1982 and Roger Federer at the Australian Open in 2017 also achieved the feat.

French pair Caroline Garcia and Kristina Mladenovic recovered from a set down to beat Americans Coco Gauff and Jessica Pegula 2-6 6-3 6-2 on Sunday and lift the French Open women’s doubles title for the second time. For Gauff, it was a second final defeat in less than 24 hours, after the 18-year-old lost in straight sets by top seed Iga Swiatek in Saturday’s singles final. Garcia and Mladenovic won the title in 2016 and for the latter it was a fourth women’s doubles crown at Roland Garros after also triumphing in 2019 and 2020 with Timea Babos. She now has six major doubles titles including the Australian Open in 2018 and 2020. The Americans, who had lost only one set en route to the final, were broken at the start but quickly recovered to race into a 3-1

lead. Mladenovic sunk a volley into the net to give them a 4-2 advantage and another break put Gauff and Pegula in control, sealing the set when Garcia sailed a forehand long on the second set point. The French duo, playing their second tournament together this season after reuniting and losing in the second round at the Aus-

tralian Open, fought back to go 4-0 up in the second and they secured it with a Mladenovic smash. Gauff, the youngest doubles finalist in Paris in 21 years, could do nothing to stop their opponents’ run as the French earned two early breaks to storm to a 4-0 lead. They clinched victory with a Garcia smash on their third match point.

Sadio Mane becomes Senegal’s all-time top scorer

DAKAR, JUN 5 (IANS): Sadio Mane became the leading scorer in Senegal history with a hat-trick for his national side against Benin in Africa Cup of Nations Qualifiers here on Saturday. The 30-year-old has now netted 32 goals for Senegal to eclipse the mark achieved by the former Wigan star Henri Camara. The Liverpool forward netted all the goals for Aliou Cisse’s team as they beat Benin 3-1 in their opening match of qualifying for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations. Having fired in a penalty on 12 minutes, Mane struck again soon after by following up his own saved shot to dispatch the rebound and then scored from the spot a second time on the hour mark. The treble in Diamniadio took Mane up to 32 goals for Senegal, moving him clear of Henri Camara as the country’s most prolific player of all time.

Elsewhere on Saturday, there was disappointment for Trent Alexander-Arnold and Caoimhin Kelleher in the UEFA Nations League. Alexander-Ar nold started for England versus Hungary and featured for just over an hour in Budapest, where a 66thminute penalty converted by Dominik Szoboszlai secured victory for the hosts over the Three Lions. There was a defeat for Kelleher, too, with the Reds goalkeeper playing the entirety of the Republic of Ireland’s 1-0 reversal at Armenia.

Hungary’s Dominik Szoboszlai celebrates scoring their first goal with Adam Szalai.

B U DA P E S T, J U N 5 (IANS): England dominated the midfield but were unable to break through a stubborn Hungary defence, as the hosts won the UEFA Nations League A Group 3 encounter 1-0 at the Puskas Arena here. Dominik Szoboszlai’s second-half penalty ensured victory for Hungary, while it also meant that it was the first time England lost a match in all competitions within regular time for 23 games, with the last coming against Belgium in the UEFA Nations League in November 2020. The 21-year-old Szobszlai kept his nerve to secure all three points for the home side as he fired home his penalty with 66 minutes played after Reece James

was adjudged to have fouled Zsolt Nagy, according to englandfootball.com. Gareth Southgate included two debutants -Leicester City defender James Justin and West Ham United forward Jarrod Bowen -- in the starting XI, while James Justin and Jarrod Bowen were given their first England senior team starts. Harry Kane had England’s first sight at goal in just the fourth minutes, with the captain cutting inside from the left and curling a shot just wide of the far post. England continued to dominated the opening exchanges, with debutant Bowen firing a shot at goal that was blocked by Attila Szalai. Hungary were a threat on the counter throughout

the first-half and nearly took the lead in the 12th minute when a dangerous cross into the England box was met by Szoboszlai, who slotted his shot under Jordan Pickford only for Conor Coady to intercept in the nick of time. Emboldened by the initial forays, the hosts continued to create chances with wing-back Loic Nego putting in another cross that caused Trent AlexanderArnold to take evasive action. While the possession was dominated by England before the break, they were unable to create many clearcut chances. Hungary opened the scoring in the 66th minutes, with Szoboszlai firing home from the penalty spot after James was adjudged to have felled Nagy in the box. The goal spurred England into action as Southgate’s team went in search of an equaliser. Harry Maguire’s crossfield pass found Bowen in the box, but the West Ham man could only volley straight at Gulacsi, before Jude Bellingham’s shot from 18 yards was blocked by Szalai. England continued to press for the equaliser, with Kane firing two shots at the near post after being played in by James and then Jack Grealish, but the home defence held firm.

Iga Swiatek

PARIS, JUN 5 (IANS): World No 1 Iga Swiatek, who clinched the 2022 French Open singles title, has revealed that sometimes

tennis is challenging but she appreciated her profession for giving her everything. The Pole star won her second French Open title

after defeating American teenager Coco Gauff 6-1, 6-3 in the final on Saturday. It was Swiatek’s 35th consecutive win and she tied Venus Williams for the best winning streak this century. Venus’ historic run of 35 straight victories came in 2000. If the World No 1 manages to win her next match, she will hold the best winning streak of the century alone, and tie Monica Seles’s 36-match run from 1990. Another victory after that would tie her with Martina Hingis’s 37-match winning streak from 1997. “The one thing that I’ve learned over these two years is that all you can do and all you can control is your work. Your effort, your engagement,” Swiatek wrote on Instagram. “So together with my team we just try every single day, step

by step. And here we are - in this amazing moment, with this incredible achievement. It’s time to reflect on that a little bit, enjoy, click “pause” button, take some rest, and appreciate every single thing. “Thank you tennis. Sometimes you’re challenging but I appreciate everything that you’re giving me.” Swiatek’s latest triumph was her sixth title of the year, all coming in a row during her winning streak (following Doha, Indian Wells, Miami, Stuttgart and Rome). She also became the first player to win six titles in a row since Justine Henin in 2007 and 2008. The 21-year old also became the youngest woman to win multiple majors since Maria Sharapova won her second Grand Slam title aged 19 at the 2006 US Open.

Wales’ Cordina wins IBF superfeatherweight title

LONDON, JUN 5 (AGENCIES): Joe Cordina became Wales’ 13th world champion as he stunned champion Kenichi Ogawa with a second-round knockout to take the IBF superfeatherweight title. Cordina becomes world champion in just his 15th fight as a professional after he produced the punch of a lifetime. Cordina’s huge right hook floored the champion who was unable to rise as Cordina won a world title in the most dramatic of circumstances. A narrow favourite against a champion with real pedigree, the manner of Cordina’s victory will send shockwaves through the superfeatherweight division as he produced a thunderous shot to show he is unquestionably comfortable at a world level. Cordina, a decorated amateur, has seen his opportunities limited in recent years by a hand injury that required surgery and threatened his career. Undefeated in 14 professional fights since his debut in 2017, Cordina was boxing in his home city for the first time in four years as he bid to join Wales’ illustrious list of a dozen world champions.
