Omicron, sub-lineages circulating predominantly in India: Report 7th Mile village council NEW DELHI, AUG 6 (ANI): The Indian SARSCoV-2 Genomics Consortium (INSACOG), in a weekly meeting, reviewed the data of genomic surveillance of variants and found that at present, Omicron and its sub-lineages are the predominant mutations that are circulating in India. “Presently, only Omicron and its sub-lineages are the predominant circulating variants in India,” sources told ANI today. “The COVID-19 cases are rising, but hospitalization and deaths are still less,” said sources. “We review the data

every week, but there is no need to panic at all because hospitalization hasn’t increased and no new variant has been found so far,” added sources. INSACOG will release its bulletin regarding the presence of Omicron

sub-lineages soon. According to the bulletin issued on July 11 by INSACOG, Omicron and its sub lineages continue to be the dominant variant in India. “BA.2.75 subvariant has acquired more mutations in spike protein

and other genes of the SARS-CoV-2,” and it also mentioned that the variant is being closely monitored. INSACOG is jointly initiated by the Union Health Ministry of Health and the Department of Biotechnology (DBT) with the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) and the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR). “COVID-19 is a cyclical viral disease like many others. Immunity from infection is short-lived for coronaviruses, unlike measles or chicken pox viruses. Newer Omicron sub-lineages are especially

capable of leaping past the immunity generated by older versions of the same variant,” said Dr Rajeev Jayadevan, co-Chairman of National Indian Medical Association’s COVID-19 task force. “The longer we are past the recent infection or the last vaccine dose, the more the number of susceptible people in a region. Many people are not following basic precautions now, and therefore making the virus spread by aerosol is easier. The public must understand that the virus has not gone away,” he said further.

rejoinder to news item

DIMAPUR, AUG 6 (NPN): In a rejoinder to the news item ‘Chathe river washes away road’ published on July 27, as stated by the Global Open University vice chancellor Dr HN Dutta, the 7th Mile Village Council has clarified that the particular stretch of road falls under its jurisdiction and not as published. In a statement, the village council chairman Lhoupe Koza and GB Zeve Koza said that the publication was made without the consent of the actual landowners, which has “deeply

tarnish the good relations between the two villages (7th Mile village and Sodzulhou village).” It further reminded that in order to avoid any unnecessary inconvenience, the concern authority(s) have been directed to consult the actual land owner (7th Mile village) for executing any developmental activities on the said stretch/land. Failing which, the council cautioned that it would be compelled to take its own course of action to protect landownership rights and hold the concern authority (VC) responsible. K Y M C

Cancer costs push 300 families in African Swine Fever spreads to wild pigs in Mizoram: official Tripura below poverty line each year

Officials release report on Monitoring Survey of Cancer Risk Factor and Health System Response in Northeast Region (Tripura) on Friday.

AG A RTA L A , AU G 6 (AGENCIES): Medical Superintendent of Atal Bihari Vajpayee Regional Cancer Center, Dr Gautam Majumder said a recent survey conducted by the hospital found that the financial status of over 300 families in the state is slipping down to below the poverty line owing to expenses incurred for cancer treatment. Dr Majumder attributed this to the propensity of the patients to avail treatment outside the state, reports East Mojo. “The detection of cancer cases increased over the years. Twenty years ago, the total number of cases detected annually was below five hundred but has today crossed the 3,000-mark. In 2021, 3,050 new cases were detected. It does not mean that the number of cancer patients has increased sixfold. The fact is, the detection mechanism of cancer has been strengthened across the state,” Dr Manjumder said. On the financial issue,

he said, a good number of patients tend to go outside the state for treatment. “Every year, we receive six to seven hundred cases who return to the state after spending lakhs of rupees in private hospitals out of the state. Among these six hundred, around three hundred families have been pushed below poverty line (BPL). This is an early phenomenon,” Dr Majumder said. According to the survey conducted, as many as 20% of cancer patients sought health care outside the state, whereas 75% were being treated in the state. As many as 5% of cancer patients never receive any treatment, according to the survey. Explaining the survey titled, “Monitoring Survey of Cancer Risk Factor and Health System Response in Tripura”, Dr Majumder said, “As per the findings of the survey, at any point of time, there are 12,000 active cancer cases in the state and last year, a total of 1,450

patients died. To control the incidences of cancer and mortality, a collective effort from all the stakeholders is required”. One of the key reasons for cancer, Dr Majumder said, was smoking. “In Tripura, around 60 per cent of the males smoke and so far, the records of the hospital also tell that lung cancer is most prevalent among the male patients. Apart from that, cancer in the oesophagus is also found in decent numbers. Consumption of dry fish is a dominant reason behind this,” he said. The survey says that 45 per cent of the women use tobacco but not through smoking. “The women necessarily use tobacco for chewing with betel leaves. In some areas, women also smoke but these are very negligible when compared to the overall picture. The most prevalent types of cancer in women are cervix, breast, ovary and gallbladder,” Dr Majumder said.

AIZAWL, AUG 6 (PTI): The African Swine Fever (ASF) has now spread to wild animals in Mizoram and it appears that inoculation is the only option left to contain the outbreak of the killer pig disease, a senior official said on Saturday. The state government has decided to write to the Centre requesting it to import vaccines against the viral disease from Vietnam, Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Department Joint Director (Livestock Health) Dr Lalhmingthanga told PTI. “Samples extracted from carcasses of wild boars found in two forest areas in Champhai district were sent to the National Institute

of High Security Animal Diseases in Bhopal. It has recently confirmed that they died of ASF,” he said. Carcasses of two female wild boars and a piglet were found in a jungle about six kilometres from Leisenzo village in Champhai district on July 19. Cadavers of wild pigs were also found in a forest in Samthanga area in the same district, he said. Earlier, ASF was reported only from farms and households in the Northeastern state. “It is now believed that the disease cannot be eradicated through the existing containment measures being taken according to the National

Action Plan as the outbreak is now considered endemic,” Lalhmingthanga said. He said that vaccination is the only solution to contain the outbreak right now. “Vaccines (against ASF) are available in Vietnam but the Centre’s approval is required to import them,” the official said. The state government would write to the Centre next week to inform it about the detection of ASF in wild boars. The central government would also be requested to provide vaccines from Vietnam, he said. According to the data released by the state animal husbandry and veterinary department on Thursday,

altogether 9,891 pigs and piglets have died due to the ASF outbreak since February this year. The administration has also culled a total of 8,486 pigs and piglets to prevent the disease during the same period. The data revealed that 43,308 pigs and piglets have died and over 19,300 culled since March last year because of ASF. At least 134 villages and localities in 10 districts have been currently affected by the outbreak. ASF was first reported on March 21 last year at Lungsen village in south Mizoram’s Lunglei district bordering Bangladesh. Although the outbreak was considered more or less

contained in December, it resurfaced in February 2022. ASF is not a danger to human health, but it has devastating effects on the pig population and the farming economy. The disease has been reported recently in other states such as Assam, Jharkhand, Uttar Pradesh and Kerala. According to the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO), ASF is a highly contagious and fatal viral disease of pigs. It was first detected in Kenya, East Africa, in 1921 as a disease that killed settlers’ pigs. Contact with warthogs was proven to be an important factor in the transmission of the virus.

50 bank accounts held by Partha: ED

K O L K AT A , A U G 6 (IANS): The Enforcement Directorate (ED) probing the multi-crore teacher recruitment scam in West Bengal has come across as many as 50 banks accounts held individually or jointly by prime accused Partha Chatterjee and his close aide Arpita Mukherjee. The agency officials have contacted all the bank authorities concerned and asked for statement details, following which they will be sent for forensic audit. Meanwhile, the ED sleuths have come across another shell company in this connection, in which the names of directors were changed a number of times ever since it was floated on March 23, 2012. The address of the said company, Ananta Texfab Private Limited, is Club Town Heights, Block 5, Flat 8A, 14 B.T. Road, Kolkata 700056. Incidentally, this is also the address of Arpita Mukherjee’s flat from where the ED sleuths had recovered huge stash of cash and gold on July 28.

wife, late Babli Chatterjee, daughter Sohini (Bhattacharya) Chatterjee and sonon-law Kalyanmoy Bhattacharya.

In 2016, the names of the daughter and wife were removed from the list of directors and Arpita Mukherjee’s name was included. However, as per Corporate Affairs Ministry records, currently the two existing directors of the company are Mrinmoy Malakar and Ranesh Kumar Singh. “The names of directors changing so frequently points at something fictitious in this entity. Probably this is another shell company which was used to divert funds to different channels. Now we are trying to detect the identity of the two current directors, Mrinmoy Malakar and Ranesh Kumar Singh, and their links with Partha Chatterjee and Arpita Mukherjee,” an ED official said. ED has summoned Sohini (Bhattacharya) Chatterjee and Kalyanmoy Bhattacharya for questioning in this connection. Both are currently settled in the US and the ED has sent an email communique to them asking them to reach Kolkata at the earliest.

However, the authorities of the Alipore Women Correctional Home, where Chatterjee’s close aide in the West Bengal School Service Commission (WBSSC) recruitment irregularities scam, Arpita Mukherjee had been lodged, has shown a comparatively softer approach towards her. Prison Department sources said that the cell of Chatterjee neither has any cot nor any chair. Chatterjee, on Friday night, provided with two blankets like the other inmates, two of which he used as mattresses and the other two as pillows. However, the cell is fitted with a ceiling fan. In contrast, Arpita Mukherjee has been provided with a slightly bigger and airy room and separate mattress at Alipore Correctional Home. “This room was mainly used for conducting vocational courses for our female inmates.

Mann said the family of the each farmer has been given Rs 5 lakh as financial assistance, amounting to Rs 39.55 crore in total. The farmers died because of various reasons, including harsh winter, road accidents, cardiac arrest and other ailments. The state government is duty bound to safeguard the interests of farmers and their families, Mann said, adding that ev-

ery promise made to them will be fulfilled, according to an official statement. The CM reiterated that his government is committed to bail out farmers from the current agrarian crisis. His government has already introduced an alternative crop in the form of green gram, the purchase of which is being done at a minimum support price, he said.

NEW DELHI, AUG 6 (PTI): The Samyukt Kisan Morcha (SKM), an umbrella organisation of over 40 farm unions, will launch a nationwide campaign against the Centre’s Agnipath scheme for military recruitment on Sunday. The campaign will be launched in collaboration with the United Front of ex-Servicemen and various youth organisations. Swaraj India president Yogendra Yadav on Saturday said the first step in the campaign would be a “Jai Jawan Jai Kisan” conference from August 7 to August 14. “This campaign aims to educate the public about the disastrous consequences of the controversial Agnipa-

Further pointing out that some people are prone to vascular diseases, the minister said, “Every six seconds, a person loses his or her leg in the world. In his letter to Delhi, Bhushan said the national capital has been reporting high average daily new cases (811 cases) for the past month with a high of 2.202 new cases reported on August 5. Delhi has contributed 8.2 per cent of India’s weekly new cases in the week ending August 5 and has also recorded 1.86 times increase in average daily new cases from 802 in the week ending July 29 to 1,492 in in the week ending August 5. An increase in the weekly positivity rate was also reported in Delhi -from 5.90 per cent in the week ending July 29 to 9.86

per cent in the week ending August 5. Bhushan said Kerala reported 2,347 average cases per day in the past month and Maharashtra 2,135 cases. He also cited districtwise spread of infection. He requested states to ensure effective compliance of the revised surveillance strategy for COVID-19 which has been shared by the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. “In view of some changes in symptoms and clinical manifestation of the disease, it is crucial to monitor and report districtwise influenza-like illness (ILI) and SARI cases in all health facilities as per the guidelines, on a regular basis for detecting early warning signals of the spread of infection. This will enable us to take pre-emptive action if required, in any areas of concern,” he said.

A

strong message was sent out at the public rally in Dimapur on August 5 which also came against the backdrop of a growing disenchantment with the unexplained delay in securing solution after over 25 years of prolonged negotiations between the government of India’s Interlocutors and the Naga Political Groups. The Naga public had considered two factors as necessary for highlighting the reasons why they believe that public have to rise to the occasion- the expectations that the Centre will go ahead in announcing its willingness to sign a broad-base agreement to end several decades of unsolved Naga political issue and the suspicions though not groundless, that the ruling UDA was again up to its old game of running with the hare and hunting with the hound. As for the expectations of early solution, it may be recalled that solution appeared visible on the horizon after the government of India’s Interlocutor R.N. Ravi declared on October 23 that all official talks will conclude by October 31,2019. This hasn’t happened and the fate of two agreements- Framework Agreement and Agreed Position- signed between the NPGs and government of India are yet to see the light of day. All the while, the state legislators continued to bask in their self-appointed role as ‘facilitator’ under various fora- Joint Legislature Forum (headed by the Speaker) and then the split by NPF which went its own way to form the Political Affairs Mission (PAM) on August 26,2020. Eventually NPF rejoined the process of facilitation and along with the ruling PDA (NDPP-BJP and Independent legislators) reformed the legislators’ forum as Parliamentary Core Committee on Naga Political Issue on June 11,2021. The CCoNPI as it is called, has been undertaking the same exercise of holding consultative meetings with various CSOs, former parliamentarians, leaders of political parties and the Naga Political Groups. These meetings have seen repetitions of the same resolution-a call on all to unite for solution and urge upon the government of India for early solution by taking forward the “ongoing peace process”. After years of taking Nagas for a ride, the people were hardly convinced that the state government was taking the issue anywhere with the same resolutions passed after every consultative meeting. The cynicism was fueled by the state government ignoring that the government of India’s deadline on official talks. So, the October 16, 2020 consultative meeting convened by the state government, revealed a contradiction with Interlocutor’s declaration that all formal talks have ended on October 31, 2019. The meeting again called on all to “facilitate the peace process and strengthen the ongoing negotiation”. At the rally in Dimapur and also as stated by the organizers, NPAC, delay in arriving at a solution and also competencies discussed, should be made known to the people. The organizers of the rally, NPAC, has made it very clear that Naga public are no longer interested with rhetoric heard since 2003. They want concrete steps to secure solution because for them ‘solution is solution’ as against ‘no solution is solution’. The rally also threw the gauntlet at the government of India to show political will to secure solution otherwise to leave the issue to the public. The continuance of uncertainty is only causing great distress and damage on Naga society as the constitutionally elected government as ‘facilitator’ has used the issue to camouflage the lack of transparency and accountability in the system while perpetrating all kinds of nepotism and corruption and no solution. Certainly no solution has been very costly and damaging for the people.

DailyDevotion The Cross in Prayer

In that day you will ask in My name… —John 16:26

We too often think of the Cross of Christ as something we have to get through, yet we get through for the purpose of getting into it. The Cross represents only one thing for us— complete, entire, absolute identification with the Lord Jesus Christ— and there is nothing in which this identification is more real to us than in prayer. “Your Father knows the things you have need of before you ask Him” (Matthew 6:8). Then why should we ask? The point of prayer is not to get answers from God, but to have perfect and complete oneness with Him. If we pray only because we want answers, we will become irritated and angry with God. We receive an answer every time we pray, but it does not always come in the way we expect, and our spiritual irritation shows our refusal to identify ourselves truly with our Lord in prayer. We are not here to prove that God answers prayer, but to be living trophies of God’s grace. “…I do not say to you that I shall pray the Father for you; for the Father Himself loves you…” (John 16:2627). Have you reached such a level of intimacy with God that the only thing that can account for your prayer life is that it has become one with the prayer life of Jesus Christ? Has our Lord exchanged your life with His vital life? If so, then “in that day” you will be so closely identified with Jesus that there will be no distinction. When prayer seems to be unanswered, beware of trying to place the blame on someone else. That is always a trap of Satan. When you seem to have no answer, there is always a reason— God uses these times to give you deep personal instruction, and it is not for anyone else but you.

NAGALAND POST, DIMAPUR SUNDAY, AUGUST 7, 2022

I

Why our economic growth has been patchy

ndia in 2022 is a result of India in 1991, when economic reforms were brought in, and India in 1991 was the result of India in 1952, when the FiveYear Plans were launched. There is the general argument that India did not grow from 1947 to 1991 because it adopted socialism, and whatever good that happened was due to the reforms launched in 1991 by Prime Minister PV Narasimha Rao. The second scenario is the theme song of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who came to power in 2014, and his Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). They claim that the economy has been transformed in the past eight years, so much so that India is poised to become an economic superpower. The claims of marketfriendly economic analysts in India in the first case and of Modi’s supporters in the second are forgivable rhetorical excesses. It would be a good exercise to look at the figures

of the past 75 years and make a sober assessment of what we have achieved because much has been achieved over seven decades rather than in the past 30 years or the past eight years. The decadal growth figures give a general picture of the movement of Indian economy, though the figures are to be taken as general indicators and nothing more. In their article, ‘Economic Growth in India during 1950-2015: Nehruvian Socialism and Market Capitalism’, written in 2021, Deb Kusum Das and Abdul Azeez Erumban mention that the growth rate from 1950 to 1964 was 3.9 per cent; from 1965 to 1979, it was 3.0 per cent; from 1980 to 1992, 5 per cent; and from 1993 to 2016, it was 6.7 per cent. It has been an incremental growth rate over the decades, except the one from 1965 to 1979 when it dropped to 3 per cent from 3.9 per cent of the previous 15 years.

In his address delivered in 2008, Rakesh Mohan, former Deputy Governor of the Reserve Bank of India, said the growth rate in the 1960s was 4 per cent, in the 1970s 2.9 per cent and in the 1980s0 5.6 per cent. And, he has rightly observed: “It is widely believed that Indian economy witnessed near stagnation in real GDP growth till the late 1970s. A closer review of the performance of Indian economy, however, suggests a continuing increase in real GDP growth over each decade since Independence, except for the 1970s.” We must avoid the hypothetical criticism that if India had adopted the open economy system from the time of Independence, it would have resulted in a faster growth and that India would have become a wealthy country. Even today, if India were to grow at a faster pace — and the country is not growing at a faster pace — it will remain a middle-income country. In-

dia will not become a rich economy because of the population factor. There may be some advantages of India emerging as the most populous country, overtaking China, but it does not offer economic advantages. Chinese leaders are aware of this fact. Unfortunately, Indian leaders seem to be carried away by growth figures. More importantly, the Indian private sector was not prepared to take up the challenge of economic growth after 1947. From the 1950s to the 1980s, the government had to handhold the private sector, and the seeds of crony capitalism go back to that era. And as pointed out by economist Amartya Sen as far back as 1980, in his Coromandel Lectures, India, as a democratic country with a free media, had avoided the catastrophe of the Great Leap Forward of the late 1950s and early 1960s, when 30 million people are estimated to have died in famine-hit China. The role of democracy in India’s

economic growth is not to be underestimated. It kept the relations between society, economy and polity on an even keel. It was Abid Hussain, former Commerce Secretary in the Government of India, who argued the case well for economic reforms persuasively in the 1980s. Many people had not noticed the winds of change that were blowing through India in the 1980s, when Indira Gandhi returned to power, and when Rajiv Gandhi served as Prime Minister from 1984 to 1989. Hussain argued that the public sector was the need of the hour in the 1950s and the 1960s and the private sector was needed in the 1980s. He said that there was no need for ideological quibbles over socialism and market economy. Many of the diehard Left ideologues refused to accept the opening up of the economy, and many of the market fanatics wanted to count economic history from 1991 and deemed the 40 years before that as the

socialist ‘dark age’. A great failure of both eras of the economy after Independence — the planned and market eras — has been on the social sector front, especially health and education. And between the two, education has been neglected more. India’s young population today is deprived of good education. Neither the government schools nor the private ones are bothered about making education the keystone of development. Education is seen either as a utilitarian or an ideological tool. It is being used for brainwashing. The growth of economy is closely connected to education. And it is not enough to turn out technicians. We need educated citizens as well as educated workers: those who can think and who can question, who can change and who can create. India has failed to achieve this ideal. Central government to discriminate against the States and not treating them as equal partners in our collective effort to make the nation strong and developed,” Rao said in the letter, narrating a host of reasons for the boycott. Alleging that recent “unpleasant happenings” have given rise to a realisation that the federal structure is being systematically eroded by some “deliberate actions” by the Centre,

Rao said it is needless to say these developments are very much discouraging to “trail-blazing” States like Telangana. “The blatant discrimination against some States even in the legitimate functions assigned to them in the Constitution leaves much to be desired,” he said. He reminded Modi that though in the beginning NITI Aayog had constituted a group of Chief Ministers to give recommendations on developmental issues, it was kept aside and on the contrary the Centre is micromanaging the schemes giving a go-by to State-specific needs which are best left to individual States. “It is not just in case of such schemes but Centre has also turned a Nelson’s eye even to the recommendations of NITI Aayog itself...” KCR said.

He alleged that though there were recommendations from NITI Aayog for a grant of Rs 5,000 crore to Mission Kakatiya and Central assistance of Rs 19,205 to Mission Bhagiratha, the NDA government ignored them and did not release any money for the schemes. However, the State government has completed both the projects on its own.

Before committing suicide, the two had recorded a Facebook Live video in which the alleged victim disclosed her identity and claimed that she had filed the rape case against Rai in 2019. She also alleged that some senior police officers were supporting the accused. Rai was booked by the Hazratganj police in Lucknow for abetting the suicide of the two. In July, the Lucknow Bench of the Allahabad High Court, while deny-

ing bail to Rai, had asked Parliament and the Election Commission of India to take effective measures to remove criminals from politics and break the unholy nexus among them, politicians and bureaucrats. A bench of Justice Dinesh Kumar Singh said it is the responsibility of Parliament to show its collective will to restrain criminals from entering politics or legislature to save democracy. Considering the criminal history of 23 cases against Rai, the might of the accused, evidence on record and the possibility of tampering with the evidence, the bench said it did not find any ground to grant bail to him at this stage. Lawyer Anuj Yadav said Rai can be released from jail only when he gets bail in the case of alleged criminal conspiracy and abetment to suicide. The advocate also said, “The High Court had directed us to submit the electronic evidence. After examining it, the court found that the case was registered as part of a political conspiracy to defeat him in the Lok Sabha election.”

VARANASI (UP), AUG 6 (PTI): A court here on Saturday acquitted BSP Lok Sabha MP Atul Kumar Singh in a case of alleged rape and cheating filed in 2019 by a woman who committed suicide outside the Supreme Court last year after accusing senior police officers of colluding with the accused. Anuj Yadav, the advocate of the MP, said that the special judge of the MP-MLA court, Siyaram Chaurasia, gave the decision in favour of Atul Kumar Singh alias Atul Rai, who represents the Ghosi Lok Sabha seat and has been in jail since June 2019 in the case. “Evidence could not be submitted on the behalf of the victim, and the incident could not be proved,” the lawyer said. On May 1, 2019, the 24-year-old woman filed the complaint of rape against Atul Rai and others. She alleged that Rai took her to his flat in Varanasi, raped her, made objectionable videos and took photographs. After this, he threatened to put the videos online. On June 22, 2019, Rai

TMC party seeks explanation from MP

Despite being informed by TMC MP Sudip Bandhopadhyay that the party will abstain from taking part in the voting process in the Vice President election, party MPs Sisir Adhikari and Dibyendu Adhikari on Saturday took part in the election process in the national capital. Though the father and son didn’t say anything, TMC state general secretary and spokesperson Kunal Ghosh said that both of them are ‘not’ with TMC.

Trinamool Congress MP and Leader of the House in the Lok Sabha Sudip Bandyopadhyay has written to fellow parliamentarian Sisir Adhikari asking him to explain why he participated in the vice presidential election when the party had decided to abstain from the process. The Mamta Banerjeeled party had decided not to be a part of the vice presidential poll, alleging the joint Opposition candidate was chosen without due consultation. Sisir Adhikari’s relationship with the Trinamool Congress has become a tenuous one with Bandyopadhyay demanding his dismissal citing his “defection” to BJP. Bandyopadhyay had alleged that Adhikari crossed over to BJP in March last year in the run-up to the 2021 West Bengal assembly polls. Adhikari had been elected thrice as an MP from the Contai seat since 2009 on a TMC ticket.

NEW DELHI, AUG 6 (PTI): The government on Friday relaxed the quantitative restriction of 10 million tonnes on sugar exports and allowed shipments of an additional 1.2 million tonnes in the current marketing year ending September. In late May, the Centre had decided to cap sugar exports at 10 million tonnes in the 2021-22 marketing year (October-September) to maintain domestic availability and price stability. Sugar mills have already exported nearly 10 million tonnes so far -- an all-time high -- in the current marketing year. The industry has been demanding that the export cap should be enhanced. On the sidelines of an event here, Food Secretary Sudhanshu Pandey said the government will allow a further 1.2 million tonnes of sugar exports. Later in a statement, the food ministry said sugar mills can now export up to 11.2 million tonnes from the earlier cap of 10 million tonnes as the stock position of sugar since May 2022 has improved due to increase in production and decrease in domestic consumption.

No hope of election win if inflation sticks: Sunak

Rishi Sunak

LO N D O N, AU G 6 (AGENCIES): The Tories can “kiss goodbye” to winning the next election if inflation is not brought under control quickly, Rishi Sunak has said. Speaking at a leadership hustings in Eastbourne, the ex-chancellor, who wants to prioritise tackling rising prices before cutting taxes, seized on a warning by the Bank of England. Rival Liz Truss said keeping taxes low was the best way to avoid a downturn. She said the UK should not be “talking itself into a recession”. The Bank of England has warned inflation - currently 9.4% - could peak at more than 13% and stay at “very elevated levels” throughout much of next year, before eventually returning to its 2% target in 2024. Ms Truss, who has promised to reverse some

of Mr Sunak’s tax rises, challenged the Bank’s gloomy economic prognosis, at the hustings. But Mr Sunak highlighted its warning that inflation could become embedded, saying there would be “no hope that we’re going to win that next election” amid continuing rising prices. Mr Sunak and Ms Truss are vying for support from Conservative party members to be elected the next party leader, and prime minister. Voting has started and the result is due to be announced on September 5. There was a brief disturbance at the hustings when Ms Truss’s opening remarks were interrupted by a small group of climate activists, who were believed to be from the Green New Deal Rising group. After the group was ejected from the event, Ms Truss took aim at what she called “unfair protests” that disrupted people’s lives. She pledged to clamp down on “militant people who try and disrupt our country” - mentioning both trade unions and environmental groups such as Extinction Rebellion. Another protester was later removed from the event after interrupting Ms Truss.

The prices of diesel and kerosene have been increased by 42.5 per cent to 114 taka per liter. Also, each liter of petrol now costs 130 taka, a rise of 44 taka or 51.1 per cent, said the notification. TOKYO, AUG 6 (IANS): Japan on Saturday marked the 77th anniversary of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima that took place in the final days of the Second World War. A moment of silence was observed at 8.15 a.m., the exact moment when a uranium bomb dropped from a US bomber detonated over the city on August 6, 1945, killing around 140,000 people by the end of the year and exposed many more to harmful radiation, reports Xinhua news agency. At a memorial ceremony held at the Peace Memorial Park, Hiroshima Mayor Kazumi Matsui cautioned in the Peace Declaration that dependence on nuclear deterrence is gaining momentum in the world. “We must immediately render all nuclear buttons

meaningless,” he said. Also in attendance at the ceremony were Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, representatives from 99 countries, as well as UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, the first chief of the world body to attend the event in 12 years. In his speech, Guterres warned that a new arms race is accelerating. The Prime Minister said “Japan will pursue this goal despite global security tensions, and while following the three principles of not possessing, producing or permitting the introduction of nuclear weapons into the country”. More than 3,000 members of the public also turned out for the ceremony, a substantial increase on the crowds in 2020 and 2021, the first two years of the coronavirus pandemic, says

UN chief warns nuclear weapons are ‘loaded gun’ for humanity

Humanity is playing with a “loaded gun” as crises with the potential for nuclear disaster proliferate worldwide, United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said in Hiroshima on the 77th anniversary of the first atomic bomb attack. The United States dropped the world’s first atomic bomb on Hiroshima on August 6, 1945, destroying the city and killing 140,000 people. It dropped a second atomic bomb three days later on Nagasaki, killing more than 70,000. Japan surrendered on August 15, 1945, ending World War II. At an annual memorial on Saturday for the dropping of the first nuclear bomb, Guterres warned of the risk posed by crises in Ukraine, the Middle East and the Korean peninsula as he described the horrors endured in the Japanese city during World War II.

Blast in Kabul; many feared injured KABUL, AUG 6 (REUTERS): A bomb exploded in a busy shopping street in Afghanistan’s capital Kabul on Saturday and at least 22 people were injured, hospital officials and witnesses said. The blast occurred ina western district of the city where members of the minority Shi’ite Muslim community regularly meet. Video footage posted online showed ambulances rushing to the scene, which is also near bus stations. A spokesman for the Taliban interior ministry said an investigation team was at the blast site to help the wounded and assess casualties. TAIPEI, AUG 6 (REUTERS): Taiwan officials said Chinese aircraft and warships rehearsed an attack on the island on Saturday, part of Beijing’s retaliation for a visit there by U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi that has also seen it halt talks with the United States on issues including defence and climate change. Pelosi’s brief visit this week to the self-ruled island that China regards as its territory infuriated Beijing and prompted unprecedented military drills that have included ballistic missiles fired over the capital, Taipei. U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken accused China of taking “irresponsible steps” by halting key communication channels with Washington, and said its actions over Taiwan showed a move from prioritising peaceful resolution towards use of force. Head of Amnesty Ukraine resigns over rights report KYIV, AUG 6 (AFP): The head of Amnesty International’s Ukraine office has resigned, accusing the rights organisation of parroting Kremlin propaganda in a controversial report that criticised the war-torn country’s military response to Russia’s invasion. Amnesty sparked outrage in Ukraine when it released a report on Thursday accusing the military of endangering civilians by establishing bases in schools and hospitals, and launching counterattacks from heavily populated areas. “If you don’t live in a country invaded by oc-

cupiers who are tearing it to pieces, you probably don’t understand what it’s like to condemn an army of defenders,” Amnesty’s Oksana Pokalchuk said on social media, announcing her resignation late Friday. “And there are no words in any language that can convey this to someone who has not experienced this pain.” Pokalchuk said she had tried to warn Amnesty’s senior leadership that the report was one-sided and failed to properly take into account the Ukrainian position, but she was ignored.

Sunday. Taiwan’s defence ministry said multiple Chinese ships and planes conducted missions in the Taiwan Strait, with some crossing the median line, an unofficial buffer separating the two sides, in what the Taiwan military described as a simulation attack on the island. China’s Eastern Theater Command said it had continued to conduct sea and air joint exercises north, southwest and east of Taiwan. It said its focus was on testing the system’s land strike and sea assault capabilities.

now to reduce gun violence and keep our fellow Americans safe. We must do more to protect places of worship, and defeat domestic terrorism and hate in all its forms, including the poison of white supremacy. “We must ban assault weapons- used in many mass shootings at houses of worship and other sites across the country- as well as high-capacity magazines,” Biden asserted. Underlining that the House of Representatives last week passed a bill to do that, he said the Senate must act as well. Recalling the attack, the President said when generations of Sikh-Americans in Oak Creek constructed their place of worship after years of renting local halls, it was a sacred place of their own and a connection shared with the broader community. That sense of peace and belonging was shattered on August 5, 2012, when a white supremacist wielding a semiautomatic handgun arrived at the Gurdwara and began shooting.

The first six months will be difficult,” he said. Wickremesinghe said that over 6 million of the 21 million population of the country are being malnourished. More and more are unemployed, he said, adding that additional funds are being set aside to support them. Wickremesinghe said political stability was important to set in motion the required reforms. “So we have to look at the political, social and economic dimensions of the reform, the restructuring that we are going to implement. We’ve already seen the economic impact as a shortage of oil and inflation in this country. In fact, it came onto the political scene as a social scene”, Wickremesinghe said, referring to the months-long street protests which culminated in the ouster of former President Rajapaksa.

We have to think outside the box,” he said. Having declared an international debt default in April, Sri Lanka is currently negotiating with the International Monetary Fund for a possible bailout package. However, the IMF programme has hit a snag in the form of restructuring of debt. Even the World Bank has refused to provide any aid until a detailed macroeconomic policy is in place. C O L O M B O, AU G 6 (PTI): President Ranil Wickremesinghe has said that Sri Lanka’s economic woes would last for another year and it will have to think outside the box and look at new sectors like logistics and nuclear energy to revive the bankrupt economy. Speaking at a two-day conference titled “Let’s reset Sri Lanka” held on Friday, Wickremesinghe said that reforms in the country also would need higher taxation. “The next six months to one year I think till about July next year, we will have to go through a hard time,” he said, adding that for recovery Sri Lanka would have to look at new sectors such as logistics and nuclear energy. “One I believe in very much is logistics, if you see the growth of the Indian, Bangladeshi and Pakistani economies, logistics can have a big role to play here in Colombo, in Hambantota and Trincomalee. The 59-year old, who shot to worldwide fame in the mid-1990s for her portrayal of Phoebe Buffay, revealed that her body perception soon changed after she landed the role, reports mirror.co.uk. Kudrow told the Popcrushed podcast she suffered from body dysmorphia,

adding that she wrongly felt like a ‘stick’ like her sister and father. “I didn’t see it. I had no waist. I didn’t see it at all. I thought I was just really skinny and I could just do whatever,” she explained. “And I would look at pictures and be like, ‘Wow, pictures really distort reality’. It wasn’t until Friends that I realised that I don’t really look like I thought I looked. That’s what was so jarring and that’s when I was like, ‘I’ve gotta actually lose weight? I have to diet? Shoot’.” Asked whether the media had impacted her change in perception, Lisa put it down to ‘just seeing herself on the show’ and simply seeing how the female trio looked in clothes. She added: “I’m not trying to say I was overweight either. I was not. I just had no idea of the actual shape of my body.” Kudrow went on to reveal that she finally began to accept her body upon reaching her 40s, telling herself: “Do what you need to do to be healthy but this is your body and it’s OK.” (IANS,LA)

CWG: Phogat, Dahiya win gold in wrestling

BIRMINGHAM, AUG 6 (IANS): Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat won gold medal at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in the women’s 53kg event and completed the hat-trick of top podium finishes, here on Saturday. This was after Tokyo Olympics silver medallist Ravi Kumar Dahiya bagged a gold medal by thrashing his Nigerian opponent Welson Ebikewenimo 10-0 on points in the Men’s Freestyle 57 kg final. The 27-year-old Vinesh entered Birmingham 2022 as a two-time champion and ensured her third straight CWG gold after going undefeated. She had won the 48kg gold at Glasgow 2014 and the 50kg division at Gold Coast 2018. With only four wrestlers in the women’s 53kg division at Birmingham, the medals were decided through a single-phase Nordic Group system, in which all the wrestlers faced each other once. The group topper after the sequence of matches won the gold while

the second and third placed grapplers took silver and bronze, respectively. World championships 2021 bronze medallist Samantha Stewart, Nigeria’s Mercy Bolafunoluwa Adekuoroye and Sri Lanka’s Chamodya Keshani Maduravalage Don were the other wrestlers competed in the division. Mercy is the younger sister of three-time Commonwealth Games champion Odunayo Adekuoroye, who beat Vinesh’s compatriot Anshu Malik on Friday to pocket the women’s 57kg gold. In her first bout against Samantha

Stewart, Vinesh caught the Canadian in a headlock and converted it to a pin to win the match by fall. The bout lasted around 30 seconds. The second bout against Adekuoroye saw the Indian on the mat for the full six minutes to eke out a 6-0 win. The victory meant the Indian grappler already had one hand on the gold medal. In what was a matter of formality, Vinesh completed the clean sweep, beating Chamodya Keshani Maduravalage Don by fall to end the tournament with a flawless record. The medal comes as a

huge booster for the Indian wrestler, who had a disappointing outing at the Tokyo Olympics and crashed out in the quarter-finals. She has been struggling with form and fitness since then. Samantha Stewar t bagged the bronze medal after beating Mercy in the final second of their bout, which decided the silver medal. Dahiya, a threetime Asian champion and a bronze medallist in World Championship, started cautiously as he tested his opponent’s strength, Both the players failed to score any points in the first minute

and the Nigerian went on the attack, trying to catch Dahiya by his leg. However the Indian boxer easily thwarted his effort. The Nigerian made another attack but was thwarted again. At this juncture, Dahiya was warned by the referee for being too passive and defensive and that seems to have triggered some wire in the 24-year-old India’s mind, Dahiya launched a series of superb attacks and earned eight points in a row. He got the Nigerian in a leg-attack twice and then forced a takedown again. The Indian wrapped up the bout with another takedown that earned him two more points. Dahiya went on to win the bout 10-0 and claimed his maiden gold medal in the Commonwealth Games. The 24-year-old wrestler from the village Nahri in Sonipat district, Haryana, will now be preparing for the upcoming world championships next month and will be hoping to add to the bronze he won in Nur Sultan in 2019.

Sable, Priyanka clinch silver medals BIRMINGHAM, AUG 6 (PTI): Avinash Sable broke his own national record to win a silver in the men’s 3000m steeplechase while Priyanka Goswami also clinched a medal of the same hue in the women’s 10,000m race walk on a productive day for India in the Commonwealth Games athletics competition here on Saturday. Goswami also scripted history as she became the first Indian woman to win a medal in race walk with a silver in 10,000m event. With the two silver, the Indian athletics team’s medal count swelled to four and it has already gone past the number in 2018 Gold Coast where the country had won a gold, silver and bronze each in track and field. High jumper Tejswin Shankar and long jumper Murali Sreeshankar had won a bronze and silver respectively in Birmingham. The 27-year-old Sable clocked 8:11.20s to better his earlier national record of 8:12.48 and finish behind Kenyan Abraham Kibiwot (8:11.15). Another Kenyan Amos Serem

took the bronze with a time of 8:16.83. Kibiwot had finished fifth in the World Championships in Eugene, USA, last month with a time of 8:28.95s while Sable had ended a disappointing 11th, clocking 8:28.95s in the slowest ever 3000m steeplechase in the history of the showpiece. With the silver, Sable made amends for his disappointing performance in the World Championships. A farmer’s son from Mandwa village in Maharashtra’s Beed district, the Indian Armyman had the satisfaction of beating World Championships bronze medallist Conses-

lus Kipruto of Kenya who finished sixth here with a time of 8:34.96. Sable, who has earlier served at the Siachen Glaciers before taking to athletics, has been on a national record breaking spree in recent times. He had clocked 8:12.48 when he finished fifth at the prestigious Diamond League Meeting in Rabat last month. Goswami clocked a personal best time of 43:38.83s to finish second behind Jemima Montag (42:34.30) of Australia. Emily Wamusyi Ngii (43:50.86) of Kenya took the bronze.

BIRMINGHAM, AUG 6 (IANS): The Indian men’s fours team won the silver medal in lawn bowls at the Commonwealth Games 2022 after losing to Northern Ireland in the gold medal match, here on Saturday. The men’s fours team of Sunil Bahadur, Navneet Singh, Chandan Kumar Singh and Dinesh Kumar lost 5-18 to England in the final at Victoria Park at Royal Leamington Spa. This was India’s second medal in lawn bowls after the women’s fours team won a historic gold medal earlier at Birmingham 2022.

For Northern Ireland, it was a fifth Commonwealth Games gold medal in lawn bowls and a second one in the men’s fours after 1998. In the final, Northern Ireland began in fine fashion, racing to a 7-0 lead by the fourth end. The Indian lawn bowls team won its first point of the final only on the fifth end. India made it 7-2 by the sixth end but Northern Ireland soon regained their hold on the tie, making it 10-2 on the seventh end which soon ballooned to 13-5 by the 11th end. with their bowls, choosing the best lines to get it close to the jack and ensuring that there was no virtually no way past for the Indian bowls, moving to a 17-5 lead after the 13th end, an olympics.com report said. On the 14th end, the Indian team had three bowls closer to the jack before the last roll but Northern Ireland managed to squeeze one in to go up 18-5 and win the gold medal as India could at most make up eight points in the 15th and final end, which would not have been enough to upstage their opponents.

BIRMINGHAM, AUG 6 (PTI): Reigning world champion Nikhat Zareen and Amit Panghal were among three Indian boxers who entered the finals while Jaismine Lamboria settled for bronze at the Commonwealth Games here on Saturday. Nikhat stormed into the final of women’s 50kg after outclassing England’s Stubley Alfia Savannah 5-0. Panghal (51kg), too, displayed his class as he reached his second consecutive CWG final. Nitu Ghanghas (48kg) also remained on course for a gold in her maiden appearance. But another debutant, Jaismine (60kg), had to be content with a bronze as she went down to Gemma Paige Richardson of England via a 2-3 split verdict. Nikhat started the semifinal on a confident note and dominated all three rounds to emerge the winner in the lop-sided bout. and it went on similar lines in the ensuing two rounds. Panghal, who is vying to win the yellow metal after his silver in the last edition, came from behind to beat an aggressive Patrick Chinyemba of Zambia with a 5-0 unanimous decision win. Nitu, on the other hand, prevailed over Canada’s Priyanka Dhillon as she notched a RSC (Referee Stops Contest) win in the minimum weight category. Such was the 21-yearold Nitu’s confidence that

she played with an open guard, inviting her opponent to strike while using her straight jabs and combination punches to great effect. In the end, the referee had to end the contest. In pursuit of their maiden gold medals, both the boxers will have to overcome local challengers in Kiaran Macdonald (men’s fly) and Demie-Jade Resztan (women’s minimum) in their respective finals on Sunday. “I know it would be tough, there would be loud

cheers for him but I’ve to stay focused. Can’t let it go this time,” a determined Panghal, who lost to another Briton and Tokyo Olympics champion in Galal Yafai in 2018, told PTI. Panghal, 26, was left on the back foot as his younger, more aggressive opponent landed a barrage of punches on the world championship silver medallist. Trailing 2-3 after initially, Panghal, who looked to put behind the ghost of the Tokyo Olympics where he made a first round exit,

had to dig deep in his reservoir of experience. The Asian Games champion upped the ante, landing hooks and jabs at will to take the round. The final three minutes were keenly contested with both pugilists trying to leave an impression but four of the judges ruled in favour of Panghal. “He was aggressive up front and I had to give it my all and used all my experiences to bounce back in the last two rounds. I hope I get a gold this time,” Panghal said.

Cricket: India through to final; Sharath assures India of 2 more medals beat England by four runs

BIRMINGHAM, AUG 6 (IANS): India are through to the final of 2022 Commonwealth Games women’s T20 after defeating England by four runs in a thrilling semifinal at Edgbaston on Saturday. India will now face either Australia or New Zealand for the gold medal match in the final on Sunday while England now enter the bronze medal match scheduled for the same day. Just like India, England were at 113-3 in 14 overs, needing 48 runs off the last 30 balls. Amy Jones hit two fours in Shafali

Verma’s part-time off-spin to take 15 runs off the 16th over. A tight three run over from Deepti Sharma brought India back in the match. With 30 runs needed off 18 runs, captain Nat Sciver called for a risky single and Amy Jones was run-out well short of the crease at the non-striker end from Radha Yadav’s throw. Nat, despite not being at her fluent best, hit a six off Pooja Vastrakar and got leg byes. But on the very next ball, she was caught short of the crease by a flat throw from Smriti Mand-

hana at deep mid-wicket. Despite having three fielders in the deep as they were slow on over rate, Sneh Rana defended 14 off the final over, including taking out Katherine Brunt, to assure India of its first medal in women’s cricket at Commonwealth Games. Brief Scores: India 164-5 in 20 overs (Smriti Mandhana 61, Jemimah Rodrigues 44 not out; Freya Kemp 2-23, Nat Sciver 1-26) beat England 160-6 in 20 overs (Nat Sciver 41, Danni Wyatt 35; Sneh Rana 2-28, Deepti Sharma 1-16) by four runs.

BIRMINGHAM, AUG 6 (PTI): Star paddler Sharath Kamal continued his sensational run to reach the finals of both the men’s and mixed doubles events and assure India of at least two more medals at the Commonwealth Games here on Saturday. Sharath first paired up with G Sathiyan to beat the Australian pair of Nicholas Lum and Minhyung Jee 3-2 (11-9, 11-8, 9-11, 12-14, 11-7) in a thrilling men’s doubles semifinal clash. The Indian duo will face England’s Paul Drinkhall and Liam Pitchford in the gold medal match. Sharath then combined with the young Sreeja Akula to enter the mixed doubles final with a sizzling 3-2 win over the Australian duo of Nicholas Lum and Minhyung Jee. The Indian pair eked out a 11-9 11-8 9-11 12-14 11-7 win and will fight for the gold against Malaysians Karen Lyne and Choong Jayen. In the women’s singles too, Sreeja put up a good show before suffering a narrow 3-4 defeat to Singapore’s Tianwei Feng. Akula lost 6-11 11-8 11-6 9-11 8-11 11-8 10-12 to Feng in a pulsating semifinal. Earlier, Sharath and Sathiyan progressed to the

semifinals of the men’s singles event. While Sharath made short work of Singapore player Yong Izaac Quek 4-0 (11-6 11-7 11-4 11-7), Sathiyan was stretched in his 4-2 (11-5 11-7 11-5 8-11 10-12 11-9) win by England’s Sam Walker. “It was a great match, all credit to Sam, he fought really hard. I really should have closed in that fifth set but I was a bit nervous,” Sathiyan said. “I have never beaten Sam, so this came into my mind and it was not so easy to play in a big match like this. I kept my cool in the end and I took the match to get my first (Commonwealth Games)

semifinal so I’m really happy,” he added. However, it was curtains for Sanil Shetty, who squandered a one-game lead to go down to home favourite Liam Pitchford 1-4 (11-9 6-11 8-11 8-11 4-11). In the women’s doubles, both Indian pairs -Sreeja Akul and Reeth Tennison, and Manika Batra and Diya Chitale -- won their round of 16 matches. Akula and Tennnison defeated Chloe Anna Thomas Wu Zhang and Lara Whitton of Wales 11-7 11-4 11-3. Batra and Chitale beat Mauritian pair Jalim Nandeshwaree and Oumehani Hosenally 11-5 11-5 11-3.
