They should find refuge neither in their homes nor in their fortified army cantonments,” a threat letter by AQIS read. “A few days ago, the propagators and flag bearers of Hindutva – a system and philosophy hostile to the religion and Shariah of Allah – insulted and slandered the purest of beings, the most honourable after God himself, Muhammad al Mustafa, Ahmad al Mujtaba, and his noble and pure wife, the mother of the believers, Sayyidah Ayesha bint Abu Bakr as Siddeeq in the most
PROPHET ROW: AQIS threatens ‘suicide bombings’ in Delhi, Mumbai, Uttar Pradesh and Gujarat vile and evil manner on an Indian TV channel. In response to this affront, the hearts of Muslim all over the world are bleeding and are filled with feelings of revenge and retribution,” the letter says. Former BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma had allegedly made controversial remarks against Prophet M o h a m m e d f o l l ow i n g which she was suspended by the party. The controversial statement made by Nupur Sharma set off an international furore. Several Muslim nations, including Afghanistan, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, the UAE,
Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain, Indonesia and Iran, as well as the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation have officially protested their statements and demanded an apology. However, the chilling threat issued by AQIS has alerted the security agencies in the country. CTAN demands termination of 23 Dutch MP backs Nupur ‘illegal’ appointees
Suspended BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma found unwavering support from Dutch MP Geert Wilders as he stood squarely behind her amid extreme reactions and backlash from the Islamic nations and threat from Al Qaeda. Geert Wilders, the founder of the Party for Freedom, is a far-right political leader hailing from The Netherlands. Wilders is also known for his criticism of Islam. Wilders called on Indians to never “give in to Islamic terrorists like Al Qaida as they represent barbarism”. “Never give in to Islamic terrorists like Al-Qaida, they represent barbarism. The whole Indian nation should rally around #napursharma now and support her... One lesson: never bow for terrorists. Never.” he tweeted.

If any passenger refuses to wear mask or follow COVID-19 protocol in a flight mid-air, the airline may bar them from flying for a certain period of time by classifying them as “unruly passenger”, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) said in a circular. Besides, airport operators must take help of the local police and security agencies and levy fines on people not wearing face masks in terminals, it noted. The circular followed a Delhi High Court order of June 3 which said the “DGCA should issue separate binding directions to all staff persons deployed at the airports and in the aircraft, including flight attendants, air hostesses, captains/pilots and others, to take strict action against passengers and others who violate the masking and hygiene norms”. Oil exploration: UNTABA mulls legal recourse DIMAPUR, JUN 8 (NPN): United Naga Tribes Association on Border Areas (UNTABA) has claimed that millions and billions of rupees worth of crude oil have been extracted from Naga soil through petroleum and forest products and for which it would “seriously consider” legal action to bring relief and historical rights to Nagas. UNTABA chairman Hukavi T Yeputhomi and general secretary Imsumongba Pongen acknowledged that this “pertinent issue” had been raised recently by the Central Nagaland Tribes Council (CNTC) on resump-
tion of oil and natural gas exploration and extraction, in consultation with stakeholders. Appreciating CNTC for coming out strongly for oil exploration and extraction, UNTABA, however, insisted on having clear historical demarcations of the land of the Naga people. It stated that Naga people should get appropriate compensation on the exploitations on natural resources that rightfully belonged to the Naga people. UNTABA, also expressed dismay at the “indifferent attitude” of the successive state governments in failing to address the issue in
its right perspective all these years. It claimed that Nagas have been losing their underground resources and virgin forests for many decades due. UNTABA said this was due to the “inconceivable strategies” of the Government of India and the Government of Assam in undertaking to control the areas of approximately 4,974.16 square miles or an equivalent of 12,883.07 sq kms that rightfully belong to the Naga people. The association claimed that Digboi Refinery was established on Naga soil and more recently, Numaligargh Refinery. (Cont’d on p-3) K Y M C

NGRCI-1CU welcomes NEWS IN BRIEF removal of illegal check gates
DIMAPUR: Nagaland Government Registered Class-1 Contractors’ Union (NGRCl-1CU) has expressed its appreciation to the State government for its political will and wisdom in removing all police check-gates within the State and announced its support towards implementation of the same. Noting that prices of essential commodities had gone down drastically within days of removing the check-gates, union’s president Theyikoulie Tachü and general secretary E Zuchamo Jami said they felt that the check-gates existed solely for collection of illegal taxes. They mentioned that the removal of the check-gates might be a small step towards a collective fight against all forms of corruption in the State, but it had surely unburdened the common Naga enormously. The union asserted that all sections of society stood to gain from the move, though it was the business community that would be impacted the most positively. Consequently, this would contribute significantly to “our frail economy” and the common man would not
have to pay artificially inflated prices for commodities in the process, they added. Acknowledging the efforts of the State government towards its promise for good governance, the duo stated that they expected more such citizen-friendly initiatives in the future as an attestation to its commitment. The union appealed to all citizens and civil society organisations to support and enable the stakeholders for effective implementation of the decision. Similar to what had been observed in the past, they cautioned that lack of support to the government on this issue would not only embolden but also enable the profiteers to slowly reestablish the illegal system and all efforts would go to the drain. The union also affirmed their support to the removal of check-gates and strongly rejected any form of modification, except strengthening, of the government order. NGRCl-1CU appealed to the state government to uphold its resolve and not bow down to pressure from any group or organisation.

High literacy rate not Oil exploration: UNTABA mulls legal recourse HC directs firm to improve NH-02 within 2 weeks translating into jobs: Gov (From p-1) Further, he told the students to be torch bearers for a new, vibrant and healthy Nagaland. He urged them to advocate healthy lifestyles since the country was infamously tagged as one with the high cases of cancer, HIV, drug, alcohol abuse and tobacco use. Also, since the world was heading to a time where Artificial Intelligence was changing not just the way people functions but also their thought processes, Prof. Mukhi urged the students to rise up to the opportunities and challenges. He said that the leading institutions at the same time should also adapt to the changes. In his short speech, advisor school education and SCERT, KT Sukhalu, said that academic excellence was an important aspect of success. However, he cautioned the students to not let this be the only medium which defined their self-worth and contribution to the society. He urged the students to consider how they would use their academic prowess to address the needs of the community and the world around them. Sukhalu pointed out that the recently held HSLC & HSSLC examinations 2022, were the ones affected by Covid-19 pandemic since offline classes could not be held in 2020 while the same was partially held in 2021 leading the teachers and students to acquire new mode of teaching and learning. He K Y M C
said the parents also suffered as many students did not possess the gadgets to attend offline classes. He observed that the lack of regular physical classes over the past two years took a toll on formal education, which was reflected in the significantly lower pass percentage this year. Sukhalu said that all the successful students had achieved something against the extraordinary odds of a global pandemic even by simply choosing to continue in school. He also congratulated the teachers, schools and parents who had also greatly contributed in the milestone achieved by the students. Sukhalu urged the students to be achievers not just in academics, but also in all social responsibilities. Earlier, the programme was compèred by Vitsüsie Nagi, ANPSA central president, Nini Sekhose offered the prayers while NBSE chairman, Asano Sekhose gave the introductory address. Inspirational talks were delivered by secretary finance department, Sushil Kumar Patel, and superintendent of police Crime (PHQ) Manoj Kumar. A special number was presented by students of Government Higher Secondary School, Jotsoma while commissioner & secretary school education & SCERT, Kevileno Angami proposed the vote of thanks. Later, the students held an interactive session with the governor and the advisor.
(From p-1) UNTABA disclosed it had met with Assam minister in charge of border affairs, Atul Borah, on January 26, 2022 in Jorhat, where they appealed for considering the withdrawing the ‘Civil Suit No. 2 of 1988’. It mentioned that the civil Suit was filed by AGPled government in Assam against the chief election commission of India, ministry of home affairs and Nagaland government. UNTABA said Bora admitted that the case would be a hindrance in solving the border issue. While appreciating the chief ministers of Assam and Nagaland for
agreeing to solve the interstate boundary ‘outside the court’ at their meeting in Guwahati on January 24, 2022, UNTABA however, stated that the agreement between the two chief ministers appeared to be “just a political gimmickry.” UNTABA said it was “discouraging to observe the Indo-Naga political discussions” that has completely sidelined the rights of the Naga people over their lands. UNTABA maintained that the boundary between Assam and Nagaland starting from Golaghat to Tizit till the tri-junction of Assam, Nagaland and Arunachal Pradesh was ‘Dodhar Ali’ that was still
in existence and from Golaghat down to Barak river bordering Manipur was well defined in the 1875 Notification of BritishIndia Government. It said that until the historical facts were considered, it was the state gover nment’s bounden duty to explore all the available means to see that Naga people should not be deprived of rights over royalties on petroleum products, natural gases and forest products. It also stated that the “Indo-Naga” political solution, “if it ever comes”, can never be acceptable and honourable without considering those historical facts.

DIMAPUR: Gauhati High Court Kohima Bench has directed the authority engineer representing three firms and National Highways & Infrastructure Development Ltd (NHIDCL) to see that the contractor executes the work on NH39 (new NH-02) from Kohima to Manipur border as per specifications. As, the condition of the road had worsened since the onset of monsoon causing many accidents and inconveniences, the contractor was further directed to improve road maintenance within a period of two weeks. He was also asked to place road signages immediately where required the most. The two-judge bench of Justice Songkhupchung Serto and Justice Kakheto Sema also requested the amicus curiae A Zhimo-
mi to visit the site along with all the stakeholders “towards the end of the coming two weeks” so that he could inform the court regarding improvements made by the contractor. Noting that some local problems had arisen while making drainage to drain off water from the road, for which a letter had been sent to SDO (Civil) of the circle concerned, as submitted by the contractor, a two-bench judge requested senior additional advocate general TB Jamir to take up with the government so that no hindrance was caused to the contractor while executing the work. As per the work programme submitted by the engineer, the High Court noted that reconstruction of the two lanes would be completed by the end of
March 2023. Ordering that the matter be listed again on June 22, 2022 the judges ordered the authority engineer to file an affidavit on or before that day showing progress of the work in reference to the work programme submitted with the affidavit filed by him. Further, as some specific concerns were raised during the hearing like non-placement of road signages, particularly at places where culverts were under construction, and the extremely bad condition of the road on the stretch between the last police station of Nagaland and Khuzama village and at 201+100 chainage, the court ordered the contractor to take immediate measures so that the road conditions in these particular places were improved.
VCs ask govt to ‘blacklist irresponsible contractors’
DIMAPUR: Expressing dismay over the delay of PMGSY road construction from Ngam VillageNzaunaa (35 kms) under Tening sub-division, the Nzauna and Lalong village councils have asked the state government to “blacklist the irresponsible contractors” at the earliest and allot work to responsible contractor(s) who could complete the work on time. In a press release, NVC chairman Masang Newme and LVC chair-
man Namhei Kuame stated that the work was allotted to two contractors—M/S Akhrieu and Co and M/S Regency Construction—in March 2012 to be completed within 18 months. However, they said that even after 10 years, 70% of the physical works were “still lying undone” despite repeated appeals to the government and contractors. They said the with the onset of monsoon road was now “unusable” completely
cutting off Nzauna and Lalong villages from the sub-divisional headquarters “The apathy of the contractors in spite of the assurance of free materials which are locally available show total irresponsibility of contractors”, they stated. They also claimed that the state government showed no authority to the “errant contractors even after signing of undertaking BJP Mokokchung district in collaboration with CMO office organised free medical to complete the work within camp at Penli community hall, in commemoration of eight years of Modi government, stipulated time.” on Wednesday. chief killing not related PPE kits ‘scam’ continues to rock Assam politics toVillage banning poppy cultivation: Biren
GUWAHATI, JUNE 8 (IANS): The alleged irregularities in procuring of PPE kits in Assam in 2020, continue to rock Assam politics with the Trinamool Congress (TMC) on Wednesday organising a ‘March to Raj Bhavan’ demanding CBI probe into it. The TMC submitted a memorandum, addressed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, to an official of the Raj Bhavan demanding CBI inquiry to unearth the truth. The TMC rally led by party’s Assam state president Ripun Bora gave slogans on ‘corruption charges’ against Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and his wife’s company. Apart from the Congress, the Aam Aadmi Party and other opposition parties, the Trinamool Congress has accused Sarma and his

wife Riniki Bhuyan Sarma “for doing irregularities in supply of PPE kits during the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020”. Bora, a former Assam Congress President who joined the TMC earlier this year, in his memorandum to the Prime Minister said that medical supply orders were given to companies owned by Riniki Bhuyan
Sharma and her ‘business friend’ Ashok Dhanuka’s son Ghanshyam Dhanuka, for their own benefit. “At a time when you (PM) are advocating a policy of ‘zero tolerance towards corruption’, saying ‘na khaunga, na khane doonga’ (neither will I take, nor allow others to take), the BJP’s Assam CM Sarma has become embroiled in this
controversy. “It has been alleged that the firms close to the Assam CM were given orders for PPE kits at the rate of Rs 990 while others supplied the same at Rs 600 a piece. There are rumours that crores of rupees have allegedly changed hands,” the TMC memorandum said. After a war of words between the Assam Chief Minister and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia, the Aam Adami Party on Monday filed a complaint at Latasil police station against alleged irregularities. In a letter to Governor Jagdish Mukhi, the AAP demanded suspension of Himanta Biswa Sarma and initiate a probe against him After threatening to file a criminal defamation suit against Delhi Deputy Chief
Minister Manish Sisodia, the Assam Chief Minister earlier said that his Delhi counterpart offered to buy PPE kits from anywhere without tender in 2020. “Delhi CM suo motu offered to buy PPE kits from anywhere without a tender. Why? Does his Deputy CM think the CM is corrupt as he asked someone to arrange PPE kits from somewhere immediately, and said that Delhi Govt will buy them? No reference to any tender etc.” Sarma had tagged a tweet of April 6, 2020 by the Delhi Chief Minister in which he requested BJP Lok Sabha Member Gautam Gambhir to arrange for PPE kits “from somewhere immediately” after the former cricketer had promised Rs one crore from his MP LAD fund for procurement of medical equipment.
IMPHAL, JUN 8: Responding to queries from the reporters, chief minister N Biren Singh said that as per intelligence report, the killing of the chief of Naphai village of Saikul subdivision of Kangpokpi district was not related to his ban on poppy cultivation in his area of control. Zilhem Khongsai (57), chief of Naphai village of Saikul subdivision of Kangpokpi district was shot dead by armed miscreants after being called out from his house on Monday night. Family of the deceased suspect the killing was related to a notification issued by the chief prohibiting poppy cultivation practice in areas under his control.
The chief minister termed the killing of the chief as an act of cowardly people and assured that the government will not spare those involved in the killing. He said that police were putting in their effort to nab the culprits and investigation was on full swing to establish the motive behind the murder. The killing might not have any link with banning poppy cultivation as an intelligence report suggested that the killing might have been related with some personal enmity, he said. However, family members and villagers suspected the killing was related to a notification issued by the chief prohibiting poppy cultivation practice in the
village area. On the other hand, the mortal remains of the village chief is currently at RIMS morgue. After a post-mortem was conducted, the family members have refused to take back the body for last rites. The family members and villagers are demanding booking of the culprits within two days. As stated by the wife of the deceased village chief, her husband had no personal enmity with anyone. She suspect the killing was related to a recent notification issued by him (village chief) prohibiting poppy cultivation in his village area in support of the state government’s war on drugs mission.
Mnp CM flags off GPS-enabled highway patrol Assam CM to induct two members in cabinet

IMPHAL, JUN 8: Manipur chief minister N Biren Singh on Wednesday flagged off the second phase of the dedicated highway patrol equipped with GPS enabled vehicles in front of his secretariat in Imphal. In a bid to enhance security to the travellers along national highways in Manipur, the police department introduced the dedicated highway patrol equipped with GPS enabled vehicles on May 13 last. The first phase of the highway patrol vehicles covered the stretch of NH-2 from Mao of Senapati bordering Nagaland to Gamgiphai of Kangpokpi district. The second phase which the chief minister introduced on Wednesday will cover the stretch of NH102 (Imphal-Moreh section) from Pallel to Moreh. The patrol vehicles along the KangpokpiSenapati stretch of the highway can be reached through mobile number 9612700785 and those along Tengnoupal-Moreh stretch on 8794427656. Talking to reporters after flagging

off the dedicated highway patrol vehicles, the chief minister lauded state chief secretary, DGP and the entire police force for their effort in providing security to the public especially along the highways. Singh said that the state police force has already flagged off six GPS enabled highway patrol vehicles to cover Kangpokpi and Senapati stretch of the highway. The next preparation was to launch similar patrol vehicles along the ImphalJiribam highway, Singh said. The highway patrol vehicles have been quite effective, he said, stressing that the patrol vehicles have been
able to check miscreants trying to harm drivers and truckers and other distress calls along the Kangpokpi -Senapati highway stretch. “With these patrol vehicles, the police can now provide assistance to any truck or driver stranded along the highways,” he claimed. Singh observed that the dedicated highway patrol for the national highways in the state has been a dream of the government for long and that recruitment for setting up of 10th and 11th IRB were conducted for the purpose of launching a
highway protection force. He said once the results of the recruitments are declared, they will be utilized for the same and hinted at the declaration of the long pending results by next month (July). Director General Of Police (DGP) P Doungel claimed a marked scaling down of crime rates along NH-2 since the launch of the GPS enabled highway patrol vehicles He added that these dedicated patrol vehicles can now act on any distress call along the highway 24*7 and added that the state police were planning to provide the same benefits along NH-37, the important lifeline of the state. “We want to secure the highway also, not only from the underground and other anti-social elements, but also to assist people who are stranded,” he said. “At the same time these patrol vehicles will provide support in surprise checks against illegal drug trafficking and other security operations along the route,” the DGP added.

T H I R U VA N A N THAPURAM, JUN 8 (AGENCIES): In a huge blow to the CPI(M)-led LDF government in Kerala, the opposition CongressUDF front has retained the Thrikkakara seat after registering a historic win against the ruling party. Uma Thomas emerged victorious in the Thrikkakara Assembly by-election after defeating Left candidate Jo Joseph by a massive margin of 25,000 votes. Despite the CPI(M) going to the polls with all its might with the campaigning being led by Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, the Left front failed to impress, and called the loss in the heart of Kochi “unexpected” and shocking. The bypoll was necessitated after the death of legislator PT Thomas late last year. Uma, the widow of the late PT Thomas, garnered over 72,000 votes while Joseph stood at a distant second with only 47,000 votes. There were no jitters along the way as Uma maintained a comfortable lead throughout the 12

rounds of counting. Thrikkakara, an important constituency housing key seats in t h e Ko c h i M u n i c i p a l Corporation, has always been a Congress stronghold. However the Left Front left no stone unturned as they sent their top leaders and ministers for campaigning in the month leading to the bypoll. Apart from CM Vijayan, all the ministers from his cabinet had campaigned by organising several political rallies, meetings and door-to-door campaigning. CPI(M)’s major pitch was the construction of a semihigh speed rail corridor, a move criticised by the UDF-Cong ress. The CPI(M) had turned it into a ‘pro-development vs antidevelopment’ battle. In what was believed to be a referendum on the Vijayan-led government, the bypoll results came as a much-needed win to Congress, which had suffered a humiliating loss to the Left in the Assembly elections over a year back.

NEW DELHI, JUNE 8 (PTI): Noting that the irresponsible conduct of some news channels has made the national discourse coarse and the gap between communities unbridgeable, the Editors Guild of India (EGI) on Wednesday asked them to pause and take a critical look at what they have done just to increase viewership and profit during the Kanpur violence. It also called for stricter vigilance by broadcasters and journalist bodies, noting that the recent incident of violence in Kanpur that caused “unnecessary embarrassment” to the country could have been avoided if those news channels had been mindful of the nation’s constitutional commitment to secularism, as well as journalistic ethics and guidelines of the Press Council of India. Violence had erupted in parts of Kanpur after Friday prayers as members of two communities indulged in brick-batting and hurled bombs over attempts to shut shops in protest against remarks against Prophet Mohammad by BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma during a TV debate. “The Editors Guild of India is disturbed by the irresponsible conduct of some national news channels for deliberately creating circumstances that target vulnerable communities by spewing hatred towards them and their beliefs,” the Editors’ body said in a statement. Diminishing returns
s government schools in Nagaland continue to under perform consistently in High School Leaving Certificate Examination (HSLC) every year, in comparison with private schools, it is enough reason for the government to really dig deeper into the syndrome. Government schools in 12 districts (Kohima, Mokokchung, Tuensang, Mon, Phek, Wokha, Zunheboto, Dimapur, Kiphire, Longleng, Peren and Noklak) in total averaged 266.25 % pass in the recent HSLC examination 2022. In contrast, private schools in these districts averaged 77.16% pass in the HSLC examination 2022. The broad picture may lead to assumption that government schools in various districts did not do well owing to their disadvantage of being located at far flung areas. The argument also suggests that, unlike private schools, the government is obligated to establish schools even in far flung areas to provide education despite severe hardships. Private schools don’t have the resources that the government has, to set up schools in such areas. However, if one were to look at Kiphire district, where government schools scored only 7% pass in the HSLC examination 2022; private schools in the district scored 79% pass in the HSLC examination 2022. Again, in Noklak district, government schools scored only 8% pass; while private schools in the district scored 61% in the same examination. Among the government schools, those in Kohima (57%), Mokokchung (54%) and Peren (52%) scored over 50% pass. Government schools in Dimapur scored a surprising 32% pass; whereas private schools in the same district scored 77% pass. It used to be said that teachers in government schools are academically more qualified than teachers in private schools since government teachers are mostly graduates with added degree or diploma in B.Ed. In comparison, most private school teachers are not as highly qualified as their government counterparts. Yet students in private schools show much better results in HSLC examinations year after year than those at government schools. One might suggest that this is because most of the children of well-to-do families gravitate to private schools. In addition, being from an advantaged background also means that privileged children are presumably more enlightened/informed. Also, it is generally presumed that children enrolled in private schools who are mostly from advantaged background do well because their parents can afford to pay home tuition fees. There may be various factors for the poor performance of government schools in HSLC examinations. One of them is that transfer and posting of teachers in government schools are done on the basis of political influence. Some government schools have more teachers than required; while some schools don’t have the needed complement of teachers. All these have been attributed to undue political or bureaucratic interferences. Unlike private institutions where the heads exercise full freedom and teachers made accountable, the same is not so with the heads and teachers in government schools. Various statements highlighted in the media reveal how some schools are denuded after teachers with posts are transferred from one place to another without replacements. Also many government schools are in a derelict condition as no repairs were being done for decades. Some of the schools have no proper ceilings and with broken windows etc. The list goes on and these only reveal the truth behind all the grandiose schemes rolled out every year. Added to this is the issue that there are too many teachers who don’t work and many who are underworked. It is time that the government decides on whether this can continue or should end.
DailyDevotion What’s Next To Do?
If you know these things, blessed are you if you do them. —John 13:17 Be determined to know more than others. If you yourself do not cut the lines that tie you to the dock, God will have to use a storm to sever them and to send you out to sea. Put everything in your life afloat upon God, going out to sea on the great swelling tide of His purpose, and your eyes will be opened. If you believe in Jesus, you are not to spend all your time in the calm waters just inside the harbor, full of joy, but always tied to the dock. You have to get out past the harbor into the great depths of God, and begin to know things for yourself— begin to have spiritual discernment. When you know that you should do something and you do it, immediately you know more. Examine where you have become sluggish, where you began losing interest spiritually, and you will find that it goes back to a point where you did not do something you knew you should do. You did not do it because there seemed to be no immediate call to do it. But now you have no insight or discernment, and at a time of crisis you are spiritually distracted instead of spiritually self-controlled. It is a dangerous thing to refuse to continue learning and knowing more. The counterfeit of obedience is a state of mind in which you create your own opportunities to sacrifice yourself, and your zeal and enthusiasm are mistaken for discernment. It is easier to sacrifice yourself than to fulfill your spiritual destiny, which is stated in Romans 12:1-2. It is much better to fulfill the purpose of God in your life by discerning His will than it is to perform great acts of self-sacrifice. “Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice…” (1 Samuel 15:22). Beware of paying attention or going back to what you once were, when God wants you to be something that you have never been. “If anyone wills to do His will, he shall know…” (John 7:17).

NAGALAND POST, DIMAPUR THURSDAY, JUNE 9, 2022
Post-mortem
The meditations-Deeper insights into the dark shadows of ‘corruption’
T
he word ‘corruption” comes from the Latin word ‘corruptus’, meaning ‘mar’, ‘bribe’, or ‘destroy’. It is, therefore, defined as the dishonest or fraudulent conduct by those in power typically involving bribery. Corruption is a deviation from normal human behavior in a geopolitical setting whereby causing the derailment of individual and institutional accountability, transparency and natural justice. Transparency International (TI) defines, “Corruption as the abuse of entrusted power for private gain,” and include behaviours like public servants demanding or taking money or favours in exchange for services; politicians misusing public money or granting public jobs or contracts to their sponsors, friends and families, and corporations bribing officials to get lucrative deals. Hence, from aforementioned etymological analysis we can understand that corruption may be classified into five groups: 1. Collusive 2. Extortionate 3. Nepotistic 4. Investive 5. Transactive. Collusive corruption means undue advantage extended to the relatives and friends. Investive corruption is a kind of investment that can help when future needs arises. Extortionate corruption involves collection of payment/taxes by force. Transacting Corruption is a smooth give and take. Broadly speaking corruption is an abuse of trust to shamelessly fill pockets with super easy money. Such phenomenon are very much visible to the wise eye and inquiring mind in our Naga society. Let us all accept that the Nagaland is a corrupt state trying to survive on a slippery moss of failed governance. Corruption seems to have become a norm in the normal functioning of the state machinery and its nut-bolts. Much has already been written and spoken on corruption and corrupt practices in the state. There is a common consensus that corruption is entrenched at every level of the society, and tribal nepotistic
influences over electoral politics-administration-governance and filthy money power have been identified as the leading causes. The economy of Nagaland is fully dependent on the Central Government funds. The state cannot sustain on its own. Despite this fact, the embezzlement of these funds is irresistibly an order of the day. For decades, as it is in the public domain, that the state financial plan presents deficit budgets. The root cause of this saddening financial drought is corruption. The observation of the Hon’ble Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) of India in its report on the Government of Nagaland (Report No 2. of 2020) that it is a “matter of grave concern that these malpractices (cases of excess/fraudulent drawal) persist despite being highlighted in past audit reports” is actually a moot point in the entire scenario. The culture of impunity has been killing the soul of Naga society. The culprits are roaming around freely well beyond the reach of the hands of law. This is the story of Nagaland through my eyes. I generally avoid participating in debates on corruption. It is not that I am avoiding my responsibility as a concerned young citizen, Public Intellectual and a Professor, however somewhere I feel that such ‘ritualistic’ talks have no use. My observation says that the people often understand corruption from a very narrow and shallow perspective. Corruption or behavior that can be termed as a corrupt behavior is a manifestation of a problem which is invisible and much more complicated than its manifested symptoms. The causes and effects of corruption, and how to combat corruption, are issues that have been very much on the discussion table in the Naga society. Moreover, various historically influential philosophers, notably Plato (The Republic), Aristotle (The Politics), Machiavelli (The Prince and The Discourses) and Montesquieu (The Spirit of
the Laws), have concerned themselves with political corruption in particular, albeit in somewhat general terms. For these philosophers corruption consisted in large part in rulers governing in the service of their own individual or collective—or other factional— self-interest, rather than for the common good and in accordance with the law or, at least, in accordance with legally enshrined moral principles. Again, we can observe that the Thinkers of the past too have failed to reach to the exact conceptualization of the reality of corruption. The problem with those who study corruption is that they concentrate on the manifestation of the material symptoms however they do not know the disease which generates such symptoms. For me, Corruption is primarily a mental disease and corrupt actions are basically resulting as symptoms of the disease. What is the beginning of Corruption? What is the true genesis of corrupt behavior that generates corrupt practices? Or if I transform my queries and ask, corrupt body, corrupt speech, corrupt mentality, which one is the worst? What would be the answer? If we are able to inquire deeper, we will easily discover that answer is mind fraud of corrupt mentality, because it is beginning of everything and is the worst. Thinking/ generating corrupt thoughts is sinful however in order to consider it Sin thoughts must be acted upon, must be executed, put into action. Therefore, when people continuously think corruptly, by default it will automatically cause a corrupt action in absence of the presence of ‘inner system’ of ‘checks and balances’. In Court of Law, we argue that two elements must mandatorily involve in the Crime, the first is Mens Rea and the second is Actus Reus. The Mens Rea is a Latin term for the intention or knowledge of wrongdoing that constitute part of a crime as opposed to the action or conduct of the ac-
cused. The Actus Reus also a Latin term refers to action or a conduct which is a constituent element of a crime, as opposed to the mental state of the accused. In order to established crime, these two elements have to be present and be proven beyond reasonable doubt. So it is the mind that primarily is a culprit. Body is merely a slave of the mind, and therefore it is not wrong to assert that a person who is engaged in the corruption or corrupt activities (as listed before) is basically suffering from a serious ‘Mental Disease’ hence needs treatment and cure. Let us inquire further and understand. An individual who engages in corruption suffers from several underlying problems. Are they craving for something? This could be wealth and materialism, or it might be something about the exercise of power and the temporary boost of confidence that gives. They are likely engaging in some form of hatred or at least a lack of compassion for the victim of their crime, implying a further state of mental and emotional damage. There is a serious absence of moral insight or wisdom. They are likely to have moments of torment about corrupt practices (fear of being discovered, guilty feelings, anger, shame, defensiveness, a will to commit other crimes to keep from being caught out). And, evidently, they willfully engaged in sustaining ignorance about the world and the impacts of their choices through which sinful actions have been generated hence aggravating their mental disease, as the more the individual engages in these sinful activities, the deeper the trouble gets, and the more serious the psychological, physiological and material consequences. Fundamentally, the corrupt official is also not in control of their mind; the craving, desires, greed and ignorance dominate and torment the individual, poisoning their quality of life and the relationships with others. So, as we can see that the problem of corruption is
not really what we think it is. It is not just about pilling up of illegal money or involving in illegal, unlawful actions consequent to the breach of trust but much more than that. We have to understand that origin of corruption is relevant to ignorance which is a result of greed, clinging, hatred, arrogance, misconception, inconsistency and ignorance. So what the solution then is? Before exploring the probable solution let us remind ourselves that corruption first breeds in mind and then it is translated into evil action. In this context, the primary duty, therefore, of a man is to control mind by developing the practice of ‘mindfulness’ and ‘equanimity’ to generate ‘GOD CONSCIOUSNESS’. Despite existence of several Laws and Law enforcing agencies corruption could not be curtailed in Nagaland rather it is increasing day by day. As previously mentioned corrupt behavior is Mental Disease, therefore, it is important to challenge this behaviour with compassion and insight, guiding those individuals who can change their behaviour to do so. As this evil condition arises in the mind, the transformation of the behaviour must also address knowing and guiding the mind. Such an effort may seem unattractive to a corrupt official, however, following a righteous and noble path is in itself rewarding, and brings real benefits, including inner happiness, self-respect, and the love of those around us. Where the individual is unable or unwilling to transform their behavior, appropriate sanctions should be pursued to prevent such behaviour which erodes the moral integrity of the current society and infects future generations and robe off their happiness. Also, in addition to what has been argued here, in order to free the society from the tentacles of corruption, asset (Fixed and Liquid) disclosure campaigns (Self and Family members of Government officials including Class
Eight years under PM Modi: ‘New India’ taking giant strides
I
ndia is stepping into a new age and people have endorsed a ‘New India’ marked by the good works of the government, where opposition parties like the Congress are losing elections even before they are announced. Eight years of the Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi’s leadership has made BJP, the strongest political party in a 1.3 billion biggest democracy of the world. This new India is going strong and is becoming more assertive in the global stage, in the right way. The development journey of India during the last eight years has been marked by unprecedented rise of the BJP all over the country and successive loss of Congress party in the national politics. As a BJP man, one cannot help but bask in this glorious journey. Important elections in five states including the recent one in Uttar Pradesh have added feathers in the hat of BJP by winning in four states. There is high hope in the air that BJP is likely to get a confident victory and enjoy an easy ride to return to power in Gujarat. With such victory swings, Prime Minister Narendra Modiji is all the more driven to bring about increased development with Atma Nirbhar Bharat as the new mantra. The emphasis on self-reliance is making the country take good strides towards achieving a $5 Trillion economy. Some of the simple but powerful positive developments happening in the lives of the ordinary citizens leading to national improvements have entrenched the allegiance of the common people to the BJP’s development mantra “Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas, Sabka Vishwas”. During the last Eight Years, the NDA has created Pucca houses for over 3 crore needy people, freedom from ODF to over 10 crore families, freedom from smoke to over 9 crore poor women, electricity to over 2.5
crore poor families and made tap water available to additional over 6 crore families. These are not just data and statistics but evidences of the BJP’s commitment to the development and empowering of the ordinary citizens. Last month as I was travelling back from Guwahati to Kohima by road, I got a call from a friend in New Delhi, asking me about my journey and if roads are still dusty and the risk of landslides still exists in rainy months. As I crossed Dimapur and was on the four lanes, I felt proud to share with him that although the 4 lane highways are not fully finished, it is so good travelling on four lanes now. I told him that the DimapurKohima road has changed. It may not be like Agra or Meerut and Delhi highways, but change is dramatic. With the road construction management being supervised by the Hon’ble Nitin Gadkari, a former BJP national president and an able leader from Maharashtra, his unique stewardship and the Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modiji’s vision of overhauling the infrastructure in the entire northeast, Nagaland is also partaking this development with the rest of NER, India. NER is actually set to take on the Act East opportunity, as a result of these developments. On May 29, Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said the Centre is implementing various rail, road and air connectivity projects worth Rs 1,34,200 crore in the North East. The Government is also carrying out 20 railway projects worth Rs 74,000 crore for 2,011 kms, which are spread across the region. The Centre is also developing 4,000 km of roads in the region at a total cost of Rs 58,000 crore and there are as many as 15 ongoing air connectivity projects in the northeast, costing around Rs 2,200 crore. These infrastructural investments are changing the branding of NER for decades as
an under developed region marked with insurgency to that of a new branding of NER as a peaceful region filled with opportunities, making it an asset to the country and propelling NER India to take on Act East vision. These landmark positive changes came about during the eight years of Prime Minister Modi’s leadership. As BJP’s foot soldiers - we feel proud about the Prime Minister and his team’s work and vision. Under the mega milestone for ‘New India’, the Prime Minister has personally guided and inspired India to make huge unprecedented stride on the digital economy. The digitalization began with linking payments and banking systems to Aadhaar. The Jan Dhan Accounts gave immense dignity and respect to poor families, helping and uplifting them. The cheap internet connections for millions of Indians encouraged digital payment and brought in governance at the doorsteps of ordinary citizens. This also made another key driver of economic structural changes- the rolling out of GST. These positive shifts formalised the economy, and more importantly, over 60 million MSMEs in India became a formal entity of the economy in terms of wealth and job creation for the country. Another game changer has been the innovation and vibrant competition among StartUps which the government has tremendously pushed and encouraged. Today, India is home to over 100 Unicorns, creating millions of jobs for the youth and generating billions of dollars for the economy. The Modi government has also ensured that the role of the government bodies should be to enable an atmosphere conducive for young talent and entrepreneurs to flourish. Thus, among other initiatives, it is worth mentioning about the Gati Shakti programme and the Dedicated Freight Corridor which will unleash huge positive changes
of conducting business across the country. In the health care initiatives, the Ayushman Bharat has given healthcare cover for over 500 million needy people. The BJP-led vaccination dispensation programme against COVID19 pandemic and overall handling of the pervasive pandemic crisis too has been unique. In the most trying times of Peace Time Economic disruption by the COVD19 Pandemic, where no government in the world was actually prepared for, the country has recovered immediately and is on the growth path. Coming to our home stateNagaland, since 1963 when Statehood was granted, the journey of Nagaland has been a story of development and multi-phased progress. But the last eight years has seen the generosity and farsighted visionary approach led by the Central government. Road infrastructural development has been visibly large. Nagaland and the entire northeast region should now take the advantage and make further rapid strides in all fields of development, taking bold strides with the Central government. However, we ought to underline that the overall picture should have been brighter still had there been peace in the entire northeast region, and especially in Nagaland. Therefore, the coming days would be crucial for Nagaland and NER, India to wisely choose peace and development, changing the development landscapes to opportunities and wealth creation through markets. This challenge to walk in the “New India” will make Nagaland and NER India, an asset region for the country, providing hope and opportunities to our vivacious youth. Kevechutso Doulo, State Executive Member, Kohima, BJP Nagaland
1,2,3,4 employees, MLAs and Ministers) should be initiated by socially awakened, free spirited, visionary individuals and organizations. Let everyone who is holding the government office as an official or a minister or MLA or just an employee lawfully reveal their assets periodically in the public domain. Also, speedy computerization of accounts system, implementation of BLOCKCHAIN TECHNOLOGY on a warfooting will go great mile in curtailing corrupt practices in the government. Also, strengthening and empowering citizens to hold government accountable will prove to be a sustainable approach that will help develop trust between government and citizens. For example, community monitoring initiatives can contribute to the detection of corruption, reduced leakage of funds and improved quality and quantity of public service. Moreover, a proper check and balance system be established to keep vigilance over mechanism through which government contracts which have been granted to private contractors. However, if nothing works, I have a final solution. I appeal loudly to all my young students and friends to start asking questions to their parents about the source of their income. Ask them how their parents built mansions for family, ask how they can afford to keep fleet of vehicles, ask how they can buy you maybe one of the most expensive cars and bikes to go to College, ask them the how did they buy lands and properties, ask the questions. Such questions from own children- who are the real architects and stakeholders of Nagaland might lit up the dead conscience and ignorant mind of the people suffering from the mental disease of ‘corruption’ and they probably could see the light of ‘truth’ which will lead them to the ‘cure’ and finally to the ‘Pure life’-into the KINGDOM OF GOD. Nagaland School Administrative Officers Association clarifies
T
his clarification is made to the post mortem report with the heading “High time for govt to be serious in Education sector”. It is to be stated that Directorate of School Education press release has not mentioned anything about “inefficient officers” but has stated clearly that “unfortunately officers at the verge of retirement are posted to these crucial posts due to unavailability of “sufficient with reasonable service period remaining” and this shortcoming of instability in the Districts and Sub-Divisional administration remains unresolved” Therefore, such misconstrued assumptive opinion that creates unhealthy atmosphere cannot be encouraged. It is also to be stated that in spite of sufficient officers available in the department because of the P&AR office memorandum 2019, officers cannot occupy the vacant post because they have to stay minimum one year in a particular post and six months in the subsequent promoted post. This is affecting not only Education Department but also other Departments where higher post cannot be filled up in spite of clear vacancies available. CANSSEA have also requested the P&AR Department to review the order since it’s affecting every Department. In this regard, the government should make relaxation to this order especially for Education Department since it’s directly affecting the students who are the assets of our society. Congress leaders claim they have the support of 126 MLAs, including 108 from the party itself. The party needs 123 MLAs to win three seats. The BJP has 71 MLAs in the state Assembly, enough to get one seat comfortably. After that, it will have 30 surplus votes, which along with three of the RLP are set to go to media baron Subhash Chandra, who has filed his papers He will need eight more votes to win the seat.
MP Home Minister warns Al-Qaeda
B H O PA L , J U N E 8 (IANS): Responding to Al-Qaeda’s threat to launch suicide attacks across the country, Madhya Pradesh Home Minister Narottam Mishra on Wednesday said those thinking to attack India should know that they would be erased. The terrorist outfit’s threat comes in the wake of a controversy triggered by former BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma’s “offensive” comments on Prophet Muhammad. Mishra said that no terrorist organisation would

be tolerated in India. “The country is safe under Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Those thinking to attack India should know that they would be erased,” Mishra said while talking to reporters in Indore.
The minister said: “AlQaeda should stay in its limits. If it is thinking about attacking India, it shall be eliminated.” Al-Qaeda, in a threat letter, wrote: “The saffron terrorists should now await their end in Delhi, Mumbai, Uttar Pradesh and Gujarat. They should find refuge neither in their homes nor in their fortified Army cantonment.” It said that the “hearts of Muslims all over the world are bleeding,” and are filled with feelings of revenge and retribution.

KO L K ATA , J U N E 8 (IANS): Regional parties throughout the country have turned into meagre family outfits for whom politics is not a medium to serve people but self-interests, BJP national president, JP Nadda said here on Wednesday. “Take the example of West Bengal. The ruling party in the state, Trinamool Congress, has become a family outfit of ‘aunt and her nephew’. So are the cases in Bihar and Uttar Pradesh, where first the father, and then his son managed the affairs of the biggest regional political forces in these two states. In Kashmir, it is the affair of the father and daughter. Similar things are happening in Maharashtra, Jharkhand and Telangana,” Nadda said while addressing the state executive body of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) here. “ S i m i l a r l y, t h e Congress from a family outfit of ‘mother and son’ has become an outfit of ‘sister and brother’. So you should feel lucky that you are associated with BJP where such family affairs do not happen,” he added. Speaking on the occasion, he dismissed West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s claims that the Central government is holding back legitimate dues of the state. “The West Bengal

in international crude oil prices following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, together with food and commodities, has contributed to pushing the inflation rate to 7.8 per cent in April. To control the spiralling prices, the Union Government reduced excise duty. The two reductions first in November 2021 and then in May 2022, roll back the Rs 13 and Rs 16 per litre increase in taxes on petrol and diesel effected between March 2020 and May 2020 to avoid passing on to consumers the sharp fall in international oil prices. The excise duty hikes of 2020 had taken central taxes on petrol to their highest level of Rs 32.9 per litre and that on diesel to Rs 31.8 a litre. After the latest excise cut, the incidence of central tax on petrol came down to Rs 19.9 a litre and that on diesel to Rs 15.8 per litre.

“In such a scenario, further reduction of State VATs on petrol and diesel across the country can certainly contribute to softening of the inflationary pressures as well as expectations,” Das said. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, at the time of announcing a reduction in excise duty, had urged states to reduce VAT. Her other cabinet colleagues including Oil Minister Hardeep Singh Puri made similar pleas. But hardly any state reduced VAT after the May 21 excise duty cut announcement. In April, Prime Minister Narendra Modi too had asked the states to lower their taxes to enable users to get the full benefit of the previous excise duty cuts of November 2021. Non-NDA party ruled states had not reduced VAT. Post-November 2021 reduction in excise duty on petrol by Rs 5 per litre and

Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) and other police personnel deployed at the entrance of the airport must ensure that no one is allowed to enter the premises without wearing a mask, it said. Airport operators must take sanitisation measures at airports and provide hand sanitisers or dispensers at prominent places in the terminal, it noted. “Also, airport operators shall levy fines on those violating COVID-19 protocols in accordance with state regulations with the help of local police and security agencies for violation of COVID-19 protocols,” it added.

NEW DELHI, JUN 8 (PTI): Lending support to the Union government’s pitch for states to reduce sales tax (VAT) on petrol and diesel, Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Governor Shaktikanta Das on Wednesday said a cut in VAT on fuel will help soften inflationary pressures as well as expectations. The central government had on May 21 cut excise duty on petrol by a record Rs 8 per litre and that on diesel by Rs 6 to give relief to consumers battered by high fuel prices that have also pushed inflation to an all-time high. At that time, it asked states to lower VAT to further provide relief. Almost no state reduced VAT. Announcing the bimonthly monetary policy, Das said a quick survey of urban households undertaken after the excise duty cuts on petrol and diesel on May 21 showed a significant moderation in their inflation expectations.

In the previous trade, the precious metal settled at Rs 50,788 per 10 grams. Silver also zoomed by Rs 133 to Rs 61,717 per kg from Rs 61,584 per kg in the previous trade. “Spot gold prices for 24 carat gold in Delhi were up by Rs 30 reflecting overnight gains in COMEX gold prices,” said Tapan Patel, Senior Analyst (Commodities) at HDFC Securities. growth momentum. This included a 115 bps cut between March 2020 and May 2020 to soften the blow from the COVID-19 crisis. Meanwhile, Department of Economic Affairs Secretary Ajay Seth said monetary and fiscal authorities are taking steps to moderate inflation and push growth. “There are domestic challenges and larger ones are there in the global scenario. Whatever it takes for monetary and fiscal authorities, those actions are being taken. We (are working) to moderate the inflation (and) at the same time keep the growth efforts as earlier,” Seth told reporters. Suman Chowdhury, Chief Analytical Officer, Acuité Ratings & Research, said, “We believe that more rate hikes are likely in the next 2-3 policy meetings given that RBI has revised its headline inflation forecast sharply upwards.”

cused on the withdrawal of accommodation as system liquidity continues to remain above pre-pandemic levels. However, withdrawal of accommodation will be done in a way that growth will continue to get adequate support, he added. “We have dropped the word (accommodative) but we remain accommodative and that is mainly to give more clarity to the market,” he said. The Monetary Policy Committee (MPC), however, retained its economic growth projection at 7.2 per
cent. While food, energy and commodity prices remain elevated, it suggested that most of the excess inflation is due to global/supplyside factors. Retail inflation in April accelerated to 7.79 per cent from a year earlier. Das said 75 per cent of the 100 bps increase in the inflation forecast is on account of a spike in food prices which are due to the war in Ukraine. “The war has led to globalisation of inflation,” he noted. The rate hike on May 4 and on Wednesday came after the RBI held the interest rate at a record low of 4 per cent for 11 consecutive times. Das mentioned that even after the hikes, the policy rate is below the pre-pandemic level of 5.15 per cent. The law mandates that the central bank will have to explain in writing to the government the reasons for failing to keep inflation within the targeted band if prices were to stay above 6 per cent for three straight quarters. It also has to suggest remedial measures to bring prices under control. To balance the inflation-growth dynamics, Das said RBI will remain fo-

MUMBAI, JUN 8 (PTI): Home, auto and other loan EMIs will rise after the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) on Wednesday raised the key interest rate by 50 basis points, the second increase in five weeks, to rein in a rise in prices that was seen continuing to hurt consumers in the near term. The increase in lending rate or the repurchase rate (repo) by 50 bps -- the biggest in more than a decade -- to 4.90 per cent comes on the back of a 40 bps hike last month at an unscheduled meeting that kicked off the tightening cycle. Simultaneously, the pandemic-era accommodative stance was dropped, which meant more hikes may be in the offing to tame inflation that since the start of the year has been hovering above the central bank’s upper tolerance limit. “Inflation has steeply increased much beyond the upper tolerance level (of

APPEAL FOR REVISED RATE OF RENTAL HOUSING
dp-2773/22
This is for information to all the concerned that recently the Govt. of Nagaland has notified the revision of the rate of rent of Govt. Commercial, Rental Housing and other buildings etc. Basing the said enhancement of rent the Executive Engineer (H) has issued an order No. EE/HD/AB-VI/2010/88790 Dated Dimapur, the 21 May 2022 which reflects an increase of 71% of rent on the existing one. Accordingly, the Welfare Committee of the PWD Rental Housing Complex, near PWD Office, Dimapur finds this one time exorbitant increase in rent as impractical, unreasonable and unacceptable. Nagaland is a welfare state and imposition of 71% enhancement of rent in one go is unjustified and against the rule of natural justice. Therefore, Welfare Committee of the Rental Housing Complex appeals to the higher authority of Government to immediately roll back the said increase and review the rates immediately to make it affordable for the tenants and not a burden hard to bear with. Based on images after the crash, it appeared the train’s locomotive passed the excavator and the later cars somehow hit the digger and caused the derailment, though authorities did not immediately explain how the disaster happened in the rural scrubland near a railway bridge. “Passengers were bouncing in the car like balls in the air,” one unnamed injured passenger told Iranian state television. The state-run IRNA news agency gave the casualty figures, citing emergency officials.

QUETTA, PAKISTAN, JUN 8 (REUTERS): At least 22 people were killed, including nine members of one family when a passenger van fell into deep ravine in southwest Pakistan, officials said on Wednesday. The accident happened apparently due to excess speed at Quetta – Zhob highway in district Killa Saifullah 200 km (120 miles) from Quetta in Balochistan province, though the exact cause of the crash was not immediately known, officials said. “Women and children are among those who died on the spot,” Hafiz Qasim, district Commissioner of Killa Saifullah told Reuters. One injured was sent to the Civil Hospital Quetta in serious condition, Dr Wasim Baig told Reuters. Fatal road accidents are common in Pakistan, where traffic rules are rarely followed and roads in many rural areas are in poor condition. Pakistan’s President Arif Alvi has expressed sorrow over the accident and ordered authorities to make arrangements to deliver the bodies of passengers to their families.

LO N D O N, J U N 8 ( AG E N C I E S ) : A U S woman has confessed to leading an all-female squadron for the so-called Islamic State group in Syria, as well as plotting attacks on American soil. Allison Fluke-Ekren pleaded guilty to one count of providing support to the group and admitted to training over 100 women and girls for violence. The mother and teacher-turned IS leader left the US in 2011, and worked with a terror group in Libya before Syria, BBC reported. She faces a maximum of 20 years in prison at her sentencing in October. Fluke-Ekren, 42, a former biology student and school teacher, travelled to Syria to join the group after living in Egypt and Turkey. While with IS, she led Khatiba Nusaybah, an all-female battalion based in its de-facto capital of Raqqa, Syria. Her primary role was to teach women and children to use weapons, ranging from AK-47 rifles and grenades to suicide vests, according to officials. In a Virginia court on Tuesday, she admitted to training the all-female group, but claimed she had never attempted to recruit children.

Depp’s lawyer suggests he may not collect $10.35M from Amber Heard J ohnny Depp’s lawyers say the actor is “over the moon” at the outcome of his defamation case against Amber Heard and suggested he might not make the actress pay the $10.35 million judgment. Camille Vasquez and Ben Chew hit the morning show circuit on Wednesday — much to the dismay of Heard’s team, given their new statement down below — where they praised the jury for looking at the evidence and denied that social media influenced the outcome. Vasquez also hit back at critics who say the verdict is a setback to the #MeToo movement. “It was like the weight of the world had been taken off his shoulders and I feel that finally, after six years, he’s gotten his life back,” Chew told Good Morning America’s George Stephanopoulos. Stephanopoulos noted that Heard’s lawyers say she plans to appeal the verdict and doesn’t have the money to pay Depp. “You all have said that the

Southern Ocean floor mapped in greatest ever detail About 21% of the world’s seabeds have been precisely mapped so far, the foundation said. “The map is so important as it provides the most accurate knowledge on the shape of the seafloor,” Boris Dorschel lead author of the paper, told Insider in an email. “It is a visual extension of the terrestrial world we know below the waves. We now can see canyons, channels, and mounts in great detail in many places,” Dorschel said. The map was drawn by compiling measurements
taken by ships navigating the waters around Antarctica, a practice called bathymetry. It provides cr ucial information that can improve climate-change models by giving better information about how the world’s oceans move. The shape of the seabed changes the way the ocean water mixes, and hence its temperature, in turn influencing temperatures around the world.
Better mapping could also help efforts to conserve marine life, per the BBC. Fish and other animals tend to congregate around underwater mountains, so knowing where those are can help people find the right areas to conserve. “Personally I cannot stop moving over the map and enjoying the sight,” said Dorschel, the project leader. New Cancer treatment brings remission in every patient cells
Slide of rectal cancer
A small study delivers startling results on the power of a new immunotherapy treatment against rectal cancer: The drug triggered remission in all the patients who got it. All of them had mismatch repair-deficient (MMRd) locally advanced rectal cancer and were given dostarlimab — an anti-PD-1 monoclonal antibody — every three weeks for six months as a first-line treatment. It was to be followed by standard chemoradiation and surgery, but patients who went into remission could skip those follow-up treatments. After at least six months of follow-up, all 14 patients achieved remission — with no evidence of tumors on medical scans and tests, digital rectal exam or biopsy. To date, none of the patients have required chemo-radiation or surgery, and no cases of progression or recurrence have occurred during follow-up, which is as long as 25 months in some patients. No serious side effects
h ave s u r f a c e d e i t h e r, according to the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSK) study published June 5 in the New England Journal of Medicine and presented at the annual meeting of the American Society of Clinical Oncology, in Chicago. “Since MMRd colorectal cancer is responsive to PD-1 blockade in the metastatic setting, we hypothesized that locally advanced mismatch repair-deficient rectal cancer is sensitive to checkpoint blockade and may alter the requirements for chemo-radiotherapy and surgery, or eliminate the need for additional treatments altogether,” explained study co-leader D r. A n d r e a C e r c e k . She is co-director of MSK’s Center for Young Onset Colorectal and Gastrointestinal Cancer. “Surgery and
radiation have permanent effects on fertility, sexual health, bowel and bladder function,” Cercek added in an MSK news release. “The implications for quality of life are substantial, especially in those where standard treatment would impact childbearing potential. As the incidence of rectal cancer is rising in young adults, this approach can have a major impact.” For Sascha Roth, the new drug was a godsend. In 2019, Roth, who was 38 at the time, noticed some rectal bleeding. After doing a biopsy, her doctor delivered the bad news. “I completely melted down,” the Mar yland resident told The New York Times. Set to start chemotherapy at Georgetown University, a friend had insisted Roth first see Dr. Philip Paty at Memorial Sloan Kettering, in New York City. It turned out that Roth was eligible to enter the clinical trial of the new immunotherapy. If she had started chemotherapy, she would not have been, the Times reported. Because her hopes of remission were not
high, Roth had planned to move to New York for radiation, chemotherapy and possibly surgery after the trial ended. To preserve her fertility, she had her ovaries removed and put back under her ribs. After the trial ended, Cercek gave her the good news. “We looked at your scans,” she told the Times. “There is absolutely no cancer.” Two years later, she still has no trace of cancer. “While longer followup is needed to assess response duration, this is practice-changing for patients with MMRd locally advanced rectal cancer,” said study coleader Dr. Luis Diaz Jr., head of the division of solid tumor oncology at MSK. Dr. Alan Venook, a colorectal cancer specialist a t t h e U n i ve r s i t y o f California, San Francisco, who was not involved with the study, said he thought this finding was a first. A complete remission in every single patient is “unheard-of,” he told the Times. (Health Day Report)

Blatter illness delays Blatter-Platini trial LO N D O N, J U N 8 (AGENCIES): The start of the trial of Sepp Blatter and Michel Platini has been delayed by a day after Blatter said he was too ill to testify. Once the most powerful men in world football, the pair were due to go on trial on Wednesday accused of fraud. But Blatter told a court hearing in Switzerland that he is unable to testify because of chest pains. “The pain will come back and I am having difficulty breathing,” said the 86-year-old in a whisper. Judges at the Federal Criminal Court in Bellinzona allowed Blatter, former president of world football’s governing body Fifa, to make his testimony on Thursday. Swiss prosecutors claim a 2011 payment of 2m Swiss francs (£1.6m) made by Blatter to Platini, ex-president of European

Both men deny wrongdoing and say the transfer was belated payment to former France captain Platini, 66, for his advisory work for Fifa between 1998 and 2002. The pair were banned from football in 2015 and indicted in November last year. Earlier on Wednesday, lawyers for Blatter
and Platini failed to move the trial to a local court or dismiss Fifa’s civil claim against them to recoup the 2m Swiss francs. The trial is due to conclude on June 22, with a verdict expected on July 8. If found guilty, the defendants could be jailed for up to five years or fined.
Accused of fraud
The Swiss Office of the Attorney General
(OAG) has accused Blatter and Platini of “fraud, in the alternative of misappropriation, in the further alternative of criminal mismanagement as well as of forgery of a document. Platini, the former UEFA president who as a player captained France to victory in the 1984 European Championship, was also charged as an accomplice. Blatter, 85, and Platini, 66, were both banned in 2016 from football for six years over the payment, made with Blatter’s approval for work done a decade earlier. “FIFA has brought a civil action against both Blatter and Platini to have the money which was illegally misappropriated repaid to FIFA so it can be used for the sole purpose for which it was originally intended: football,” said FIFA’s lawyer Catherine Hohl-Chirazi.

1st T20I: Hazlewood, Warner and Finch lead Australia to 10-wicket win over SL
C O L O M B O, J U N 8 (IANS): A sensational bowling effort by Josh Hazlewood (4/16) followed by a dominating batting performance by David Warner (70 not out off 44) and Aaron Finch (61 not out off 40) led Australia to a convincing 10-wicket win over Sri Lanka in the first ODI of the three match series at R Premadasa Stadium, here on Tuesday. Apart from Hazlewood, Mitchell Starc (3/26) also picked crucial wickets as Australia bowled out Sri Lanka for 128-10 in 19.3 overs. With such a low total to defend, Sri Lanka didn’t have many options but to attack with spin upfront. So, Maheesh Theekshana opened the bowling and Wanindu Hasaranga bowled the fifth over, only for the latter to concede 19 runs in what was the
Josh Hazlewood most expensive over in the match. David Warner raced to a 32-ball fifty as Aaron Finch played second fiddle, bringing up his fifty off 37 balls much later in the rainpunctuated game. Austra-
lia brought up their 100 in the 12th over and were able to overhaul the under-par target in 14 overs with 10 wickets in hand. Earlier, put into bat first, Sri Lanka were off to a solid opening partnership as they scored 59 for 0 in the Powerplay. Pathum Nissanka (36) was the first to be dismissed, ending his 61-run stand with Charith Asalanka but it didn’t affect Sri Lanka innings much as hosts got to 100 for 1 in the 12th over. But, Hazlewood returned in the 14th over and produced Sri Lanka’s downfall. The pacer struck with his first ball, getting Kusal Mendis caught at cover. A couple of balls later, Bhanuka Rajapaksa edged one to the keeper while Hazlewood’s third was the big fish Shanaka, who was trapped right in front.

KO L K AT A , J U N 8 (PTI): Talismanic Sunil Chhetri was once again the man of the moment as he struck a brace to inspire India to a 2-0 win over Cambodia in their opening match of the Asian Cup qualifying final round match at the Salt Lake Stadium here on Wednesday. The Igor Stimac’s side were far from their best and failed to make use of their better possession against a weak side but the 37-year-old returned Chhetri from an injury layoff to score on either side of the break (13th and 59th minute). The double strike brought him back to the third place in the list of highest scorers among active footballers in the world. With 82 goals from 127 matches, Chhetri now sits behin Portugal superstar Cristiano Ronaldo (117) and Argentine virtuoso Lionel Messi (86). Following a tense start that saw their star centre-back Sandesh Jhingan earn a third minute yellow card for arguing with the referee, Chhetri settled the nerves converting a 14th minute penalty in a calm-headed way.

Norway chess: Anand beats Radjabov; Carlsen suffers loss
Viswanathan Anand STAVANGER, JUN 8 (PTI): Viswanathan Anand defeated Azerbaijan’s Teimour Radjabov in the Armageddon in the seventh round of the Norway Chess tournament to remain in the second spot behind world number one Magnus Carlsen. The 52-year old Indian grandmaster has 13 points after the seventh round, half a point behind Carlsen, who was shocked by Norwegian compatriot Aryan Tari in the sudden death tie-break. Anand and Radjabov drew their Classical match
in 42 moves in a Guicco Pianissimo game. In the subsequent sudden death tie-break (Armageddon), the former world champion needed only 25 moves to beat the Azerbaijan player to secure a win early on Wednesday. Meanwhile, Carlsen went down to his countryman in 37 moves after the classical match had ended in a stalemate. Azerbaijan star Shakhriyar Mamedyarov scored over Anish Giri to move to third spot with 11.5 points along with Maxime Vachier-Lagrave, who defeated Wesley So. Both scored wins in the classical for full three points. In the other match of the day, China’s Hao Wang edged veteran Veselin Topalov in the Armageddon. In the ongoing tournament, the players take part in an Armageddon (sudden death) in case of a draw in the classical game.
past a diving Hul Kimhuy with his powerful strike. But thereafter, it was a tale of missed chances for the Blue Tigers who failed
to justify their 69 per cent possession to go into the break with a slender lead. Chhetri missed a couple of headers and even
was booked in the 30th minute for a rough tackle on Choun Chanchav as it was not the kind of start the Blue Tigers wanted against the lowly Angkor Warriors. A couple of changes at the break -- Sahal Abdul Samad and Udanta Singh coming in for Manvir Singh and Anirudh Thapa -- made the Blue Tigers more fluidity in their attack. Finally, it was from a superb assist by Brandon Fernandes that Chhetri completed his brace to give India a 2-0 cushion at the hour mark. The Goan announced his return to the starting XI with a measured cross and Chhetri rose just enough to connect the free header and brought up his 82nd international goal. The Indian captain was taken off by Stimac in the 68th minute with Ashique Kuruniyan replacing him. For Stimac, this was his first win on home soil since his appointment as the head-coach of the Blue Tigers. Stimac has lost thrice and drawn twice at home, conceding 13 goals earlier.

Rahul ruled out; Pant to lead India against Proteas
NEW DELHI, JUN 8 (PTI): India skipper KL Rahul was on Wednesday ruled out of the five-match T20 International series against South Africa due to a groin injury, a day before the first match here. Left-arm spinner Kuldeep Yadav will also miss the entire T20I series after getting hit on his right hand while batting in the nets on Tuesday. “ Te a m I n d i a c a p tain KL Rahul has been ruled out of the T20I series against South Africa owing to a right groin injury while Kuldeep Yadav will miss out in the T20I series after getting hit on his right hand while batting in the nets last evening,” the BCCI said in a statement. “The All-India Senior Selection Committee has named wicket-keeper

Both the cricketers will now report to the NCA where the medical team will
assess them further and decide on the future course of treatment. It is understood that Ruturaj Gaikwad will open the batting alongside Ishan Kishan in the seriesopener on Thursday. Will lead India with my chin up: Pant Handed the leadership
of the Indian team just a day before the five-match T20I series against South Africa, newly appointed captain Rishabh Pant said he will be taking up the responsibility with his chin up. “It’s a very good feeling although it didn’t come in good circumstances. The news just came in for me as well an hour back so I’m also processing it,” Pant said on the eve of the first match. “I haven’t even digested the information yet. It is a great feeling getting this opportunity, especially in my hometown,” the Delhi cricketer said. Pant has led the IPL side Delhi Capitals for two seasons. In the just-concluded edition of the league, Pant experimented with his batting position. Asked if he will continue shuffling his batting order, he said, “My batting order will depend on the conditions. In these conditions, we can’t have a floating batting line because we play spinners day in and day out.
off Line Christophersen of Denmark 18-21, 21-15, 2111 in a 51-minute match. Sen will face Denmark’s Rasmus Gemke next, while Sindhu plays Indonesia’s Gregoria Mariska Tunjung. In other results, Aakarshi Kashyap went down 12-21, 11-21 to USA’s Beiwen Zhang in under 30 minutes to bow out of the competition. On a comeback trail after recovering from an injury, Sameer Verma couldn’t put his best foot forward, losing 17-21, 15-21
to Indonesia’s Chico Aura Dwi Wardoyo. The mixed pairing of Ishaan Bhatnagar and Tanisha Crasto produced a gallant fight before losing 14-21, 21-16, 12-21 to fourth seeds Praveen Jordan and Melati Daeva Oktavianti of Indonesia in an opening round match. Sindhu, a former world champion, came into the match with a 3-0 head-to-head record against Line but she blew a 11-9 advantage to lose the opening game, primarily due to her unforced errors. In the second game too, Sindhu squandered a 3-0 lead but Line too couldn’t grab the opportunity. The Danish world number 22 played some superb cross-court smashes but errors put paid to her hopes. She missed the lines far too many times and also found the nets a lot to undo all her good work. A wide shot from Sindhu helped Line to grab a slender 11-10 lead but she again went long as the Indian established a threepoint cushion and extended it to 17-12 after an enthralling rally.

Nations League: Kane penalty earns Eng draw in Germany SAI terminates cycling coach’s
Kane levelled for England in the 88th minute from the spot to deny Germany a narrow win. (Getty Images) MUNICH, JUN 8 (IANS): England football captain Harry Kane helped his team pick up a point, scoring a second-half penalty to draw the Group 3 UEFA Nations League match against Germany 1-1 here. Jonas Hofmann’s second-half strike looked like it would condemn England to a second successive loss in the tournament, but
Kane made sure that would not be the case, picking himself up to score his 50th goal for the country after being brought down in the box five minutes from time. Nico Schlotterbeck had caught the back of Kane’s ankle as he chased a ball from Raheem Sterling, and the skipper then fired his spot-kick into the bottom left corner, according
to englandfootball.com. Following the 1-0 defeat to Hungary in the opening match of the Nations League, England needed something from the game against Germany, and they got it after responding well to going behind. England’s last trip to Munich saw them record one of their most famous
victories, Michael Owen scoring a hat-trick in a 5-1 success on the way to qualification for the 2002 World Cup. But Tuesday’s encounter was a much tighter affair. Germany had the better of the first half, with Kyle Walker and Kieran Trippier making important interventions in their own box.
After an early Kane effort, England’s best moments came at the end of the half, with Bukayo Saka looking dangerous as half time approached and saw a shot go wide of the post after cutting in from the right. Germany had signalled their intent early on, with Walker having to be very alert to get in front of Thomas Muller at the back post from a corner after just two minutes. In an open game, England were soon threatening at the other end. The second half started with a bang for Germany, with Hofmann firing home from 15 metres out after being played in by Joshua Kimmich. Jordan Pickford got a hand to it but could not deny the midfielder. Pickford then kept England in it with two crucial saves, denying Gundogan and Muller to give his side a chance. Manuel Neuer was proving a tough nut to crack at the other end, somehow keeping Kane out when he was put in at the back post. But there was no stopping the England captain from the spot, and despite some threats from both sides in the closing minutes, the points were shared.
contract following allegations
NEW DELHI, JUN 8 (PTI): Sports Authority of India (SAI) on Wednesday terminated the contract of chief cycling coach R K Sharma, acting on a preliminary report of an inquiry committee after a female cyclist accused him of “inappropriate behaviour” during a trainingcum-competition tour of Slovenia. SAI said the inquiry committee, formed by it following the complaint, found the allegations of the female cyclist to be true. “SAI had constituted an inquiry committee to hear the case of a national level cyclist’s complaint against a coach of inappropriate behaviour during a foreign exposure trip in Slovenia which was organised by the Cycling Federation of India. The committee has submitted its preliminary report today and prima facie the case is established and the allegations of the athlete are found to be true,” the SAI said. “The coach who was hired on recommendation of the Cycling Federation of India had a contract with the Sports Authority of India. Following the
CFI on instructions of SAI has decided to call the team back. (Representative Image) report, SAI has terminated the contract of the coach with immediate effect,” the statement added. SAI said the committee will continue a detailed investigation into the case and submit a final report. The complainant was part of the Indian endurance contingent, consisting of five male and a female, that flew to Slovenia on May 15 and was scheduled to return on June 14. SAI has already called back the cyclist, who made the allegation, to ensure her safety. It has also called back the entire contingent from Slovenia in the after-
math of the incident. The training-cumcompetition trip to Slovenia was arranged to help Indian team prepare well for the Asian Track Cycling Championships, scheduled to be held in the national capital from June 18 to 22. The female cyclist had apprised the SAI of inappropriate behaviour by coach during her stay in Slovenia and was so terrified that she feared for her life. The matter had come to light on Monday when SAI issued a statement, saying it has called the cyclist back to ensure her safety.
