India set to get third vaccine

NEW DELHI, APR 12 (IANS): A government expert panel has given its nod to emergency use authorisation of Russian-made Covid vaccine, Sputnik-V, in India, Union Health Ministry sources said. After the Drug Controller General of India gives assent to the Subject Expert Committee’s approval, the sources told IANS, India will have a third Covid vaccine after AstraZeneca-Oxford University developed-Serum Institute of India-manufactured Covishield and Bharat Biotechdeveloped and manufactured Covaxin. Indian Council of Medical Research’s (ICMR) Dr N.K. Arora, talking to IANS, said: “Though, I am yet to receive any official information about its approval, but it would be good news for India if it is approved.”

DIMAPUR, APR 12 (NPN): Central Nagaland Tribes Council (CNTC) has asked the State government to implement the SARFAESI Act, 2002 in the interest of educated Naga unemployed youth. In a statement, CNTC pointed out that many young talented Naga youth were forced to go outside Nagaland for jobs to earn their livelihood. CNTC said most of them want to start their projects and work in their home state. However, CNTC said owing to lack of financial resources, the youth had no option but go out of the state for survival. CNTC pointed out that implementation of the Act would help thousands of Naga youth to earn their livelihood at home instead of having to go out and face untold miseries and hard-

ships in the past, in many cities of the mainland. Many youth wanted to start small businesses here in their home State but, without the banks assisting them financially, it became impossible for them to start all by themselves, the council contended. Hence, CNTC urged the State government to work out some modalities along with all stakeholders like local entrepreneurs, contractors, banks and financial institutions to implement the Act in tandem with other special laws granted to Nagaland like Article 371(A), Land and Revenue Regulations Amendment Act, 2002 so that, in case of local entrepreneurs defaulting bank loans, the mortgaged lands could be auctioned to local Nagas only so that special provisions are not infringed. versity found that in the most at-risk patients, inhaled budesonide clears up the infection far more quickly and may even prevent hospitalisation and long Covid. The results are now with the Department of Health, who are soon expected to issue guidance recommending that the drug be used for patients in the community. Scientists chose

to trial the corticosteroid budesonide after noticing that people with asthma were under-represented in hospitalised Covid patients, which is not the case in other respiratory illnesses, such as seasonal flu. Researchers suspected it could be the asthma treatments which were preventing the virus from progressing. (Cont’d on p-8)

CTYO, CTSU back move to shift DC office DIMAPUR, APR 12 (NPN): Chümoukedima Town Youth Organisation (CTYO) and Chümoukedima Town Students’ Union (CTSU) have declared support to the move to shift Dimapur deputy commissioner’s (DC) from the current location to Chümoukedima. In a joint statement, CTYO president Hovise Naleo and general secretary Avi Makritsu and CTSU president Kezhawelie Richa and general secretary Kenivi Yhoshü said they were disheartened to see few civil society organisations (CSOs), claiming to repre-

sent the will and disposition of all people of Dimapur district, coming up strongly to oppose shifting of the DC office. They pointed out that these CSOs remained silent when the State government had initiated construction of the new DC complex, but were now threatening to disturb peace when construction of the complex was complete and the office was ready for shifting. CTYO and CTSU reminded the CSOs that Chümoukedima was established as the district headquarter of the newly-created Dimapur district by the SC

Vaccinated people can still transmit disease: Experts NEW DELHI, APR 12 (PTI): COVID-19 vaccines protect against serious illness but transmissibility can still continue and inoculated people can pass on the infection to others, say scientists, warning against complacency in those who stop maintaining protocol after they get their jabs. Transmissibility from vaccinated persons can be a risk factor until global coverage is achieved, top experts said as India’s Covid numbers escalated sharply, reaching 1,35,27,717 (1.35 crore/13,5 million) with 1,68,912 new cases on Monday to make it the country with the second highest number of cases after the US. “Vaccination is simply one of the many different strategies we have to deal with in the pandemic. Jamir government in 1997, claiming that the place was chosen without any political influence or public demand. Mentioning that it was one of the fastest growing urban landscapes now, both the organisations asserted that it made good sense to have the DC office there. They said Dimapur district was inhabited by all sections and communities of Nagaland and encompassed many towns and villages. Chümoukedima has vast potential for further development whereas, Dimapur town was congested and had stagnated in its

scope for further infrastructural development and growth, combined with its ever growing traffic woes, they added. C T YO a n d C T S U further asserted that Chümoukedima was not a “rural village” but under the administration of Chümoukedima Town Council and had even served as the first headquarter of the then Naga Hills district during British rule. They claimed that the town was inhabited by not one but all communities where everyone was equal and shared equal responsibility. (Cont’d on p-8)

(NPN): Nagaland on Monday reported 11 new Covid19 positive cases-- 8 in Dimapur, 2 in Mokokchung and 1 in Kohima, taking the total caseload to 12416. Following the detection of 11 fresh Covid cases, the State’s active case tally also rose to 167. Over 1.2 lakh inoculated: Meanwhile, a total of 1,22,410 beneficiaries have been vaccinated till date. DIMAPUR, APR 12 (NPN): Tzurangkong Range Naga Youth Front (TRNYF) has urged governor RN Ravi to expedite construction of the Trans-Nagaland Expressway/Nagaland Foothill Road so that the people could avail better livelihood opportunities and also for development of foothill areas in general. DDGBA ‘selected office-bearers’ clarify DIMAPUR, APR 12 (NPN): Selected office-bearers of Dimapur District GB Association (DDGBA) have claimed that the ‘selections/ search committee’, through a majority decision, selected GB Longri Jamir as president DDGBA in accordance with Art. 8 of the Nagaland GB Federation (NGBF) constitution and Art. 14 of the DDGBA constitution. DDGBA gen. secretary Nieba Kesiezie and information secretary Luikang Namgi in a rejoinder said the issue of the search committee not being qualified because they had not paid membership fee in time, did not hold any water. As responsible GBs, they said all of them had been clearing the membership fees regularly and could be verified from the office. They said the issue raised was a trivial matter and an excuse to oppose the legitimatelyselected office-bearers that was unreasonable. They said the selections/search committee comprised of-- GB Union Dimapur Sadar president MY Ngullie as convener ; GB Union Dhansiripar president P Dohoi Swu; GB Union Chümoukedima president Tokishe Achumi; GB Union Niuland president Vikheyi Zhimomi and GB Union Medziphema president Rokovitso Kuotso as members. The signatories said even at

the general conference held at Diphupar B on November 24, 2018, the majority decision of Search/ Selection Committee was accepted and supported by majority of the GBs present. They accused the opposing party of riding roughshod over the majority decision and agreement by deciding to hold an election themselves. They said this was totally against the constitutions of NGBF and DDGBA which have provision of democratically giving a chance to every tribe to serve in the association on a selections and rotation basis. Fur ther, they said that the process of having an election where only 25 members voted for the president was duly opposed by most tribal GB associations/unions of Dimapur, who had condemned and opposed this through press releases in the media. They alleged that the dubious part played by NGBF officials in attending the election process was totally against Art. 8 of the NGBF constitution, whose very presence seemed to encourage the “illegal election process” by giving tacit support for going against the constitution. Therefore, they said the votes of 25 GBs of Dimapur could not be interpreted as majority of the whole DDGBA.

sentation to the governor however observed that at the current pace, the completion of the road would be a distant dream, especially without the lack of any Central funding. They said either the Centre was purposely ignoring the project or some vested interests were obstructing completion of the road. They emphasised that an expressway like the proposed Nagaland Foothill Road connecting the area to Wokha and Dimapur districts to the south and Tuli area (Cont’d on p-8)

AR rebuts NSCN (I-M) allegation DIMAPUR, APR 12 (NPN): Assam Rif les, through its PRO has described as “malicious allegations” made against it by the NSCN(I-M) in the local media, over the AR post at Doyapur. PRO accused the NSCN(I-M) of making the allegation “against a legitimate Assam Rifles post at Doyapur” carrying out its bona fide task from the location in existence for over two years. PRO said the allegation “raises the question of the ulterior motives of the complainants”. AR clarified that its post at Doyapur plays a key role in providing a secure environment as per the wishes of the local populace and the government while maintaining that Doyapur is situated around 6 kms from Hebron camp and “far beyond what is stipulated in the Cease Fire Ground Rules.” AR claimed that various initiatives by the post, also in conjunction with the civil administration, had added value to the lives of the residents of Doyapur and neighbouring villages. Further, it advised the NSCN (I-M) “ to refrain from their constant attempts directed at discrediting security forces” for having a free hand in running “its unlawful activities in the area. Special NIA judge W Tonen sent him to judicial custody for 15 days (till April 26) while fixing the hearing for bail the separatist leader pleaded to the court on April 17. National Investigation Agency (NIA) was investigating a case registered against declaration of Manipur’s independence from Indian Union and formation of Manipur State Council (MSC) based in the United Kingdom (UK) in 2019. Interestingly, the arrest of separatist leader came up barely two days after the NIA submitted a chargesheet against him (Samarjit) and four others including self-styled chief minister

Samarjit was arrested from Indira Gandhi International Airport New Delhi on March 25 last while the charge-sheet was submitted on March 23. The separatist leader was in London along with his associate self-proclaimed chief minister of the dejure government Yambem Biren since they declared Manipur’s independence from Indian Union. In the charge-sheet, NIA alleged that Samarjit was the chairman and managing director of Salai Group of Companies and SMART Society and he and his associates, Elangbam Brojendro Singh and Akoijam Deepa Anand, were allegedly collecting huge amounts of money and cheating the public by taking deposits from by offering 36 per cent annual returns without any legal authority.

Raut blames Centre for rising cases in Maha, C’garh, Punjab MUMBAI, APR 12 (PTI): Shiv Sena MP Sanjay Raut on Monday blamed the Centre for the rise in coronavirus positive cases in Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh and Punjab. Speaking to reporters, Raut said Maharashtra had followed every instruction issued by the Centre, and the latter must act sensitively and cautiously and stop blaming states. Ten states- Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, Chhattisgarh, Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat and Rajasthan- have shown a steep rise in daily COVID-19 cases, accounting for83.02 per centof the new infections, the Union Health Ministry said on Monday. “If Maharashtra and the other two states (Punjab and Chhattisgarh) has failed, the first failure is that of the Centre since the country is fighting the war against the virus under prime minister Narendra Modi’s leadership,” he said, questioning why only non-BJP ruled states were being singled out as failures. “Has the coronavirus disappeared in states which have a BJP chief minister?” Raut questioned.

is to collect money from wherever it is possible,” he alleged. Fadnavis was referring to the allegations of corruption raised by former Mumbai police chief Param Bir Singh against then home minister Anil Deshmukh, an NCP stalwart. The former chief minister also said the highest number of COVID-19 cases and fatalities are being reported from Maharashtra. “In the last ten days, 50 to 55 per cent of the total deaths in the country were reported from Maharashtra. Similarly, 60 per cent of the total cases in the country were also reported from Maharashtra,” he said. Fadnavis said, “I can understand locking and unlocking (to contain the spread of coronavirus) is important but when a lockdown is imposed, people lose their jobs. Unfortunately, the state government is not at all conscious about providing financial help to the (vulnerable) people”.

NEW DELHI, APR 12 (PTI): The Centre on Monday objected to the names suggested by the Supreme Court appointed special public prosecutor for selecting new SPPs in the coal scam cases filed by the Enforcement Directorate after which the top court said it would pass orders based on the names given to it by the lawyers concerned. Senior advocate R S Cheema, appointed SPP in 2014 by the top court, has sought to be relieved from the responsibility citing his age and shortage of law officers assisting him. Cheema has agreed however to act as the SPP in cases lodged by CBI in coal scam. A bench of Chief Justice SA Bobde and Justices AS Bopanna and V Ramasubramanian said, “We will pass order in the matter”. During the hear-

Sonia writes to PM for nod to more vaccines; BJP hits back NEW DELHI, APR 12 (AGENCIES): COVID vaccine politics continued on Monday with Congress president Sonia Gandhi writing to Prime Minister Narendra Modi urging emergency use authorisation for all vaccines that have the required clearances even as the BJP accused the opposition party of “lobbying” for certain pharma firms. In her letter to the PM after an internal meeting with Congress chief ministers, Sonia Gandhi said, “Vaccines are our foremost hope. NEW DELHI, APR 12 (PTI): Several parts of the country are likely to receive rainfall in the next five days due to different cyclonic circulations, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Monday. According to the National Weather Forecasting Centre of the IMD, under the influence of trough and cyclonic circulations over the south peninsula, scattered to fairly widespread rainfall with thunderstorm, lightning and gusty winds of 30-40 kilometres per hour are very likely over southwest peninsular India in the next five days. The IMD said isolated heavy rainfall is also likely over south and ghat areas of Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Mahe, coastal and south interior Karnataka during April 14-16. Another cyclonic circulation lies over southwest Madhya Pradesh and neighbouring areas. Under its influence, isolated rainfall with thunderstorm, lightning and gusty winds (30-40 kmph) is very likely over Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha, Telangana, Chhattisgarh, Gangetic West Bengal and Odisha during next 4-5 days and over Jharkhand during next 24 hours.

The NIA suspects that Kazi assisted Waze, who headed the Crime Intelligence Unit (CIU) until his arrest on March 13, in obtaining fake number plates used for the explosives-laden SUV. Kazi was previously questioned multiple times by the NIA in connection with the recovery of the SUV on February 25 and the subsequent death of Hiran, the purported owner of that vehicle. Hiran was found dead in a creek in Thane on March 5. Kazi was shunted out of the Mumbai Crime Branch last month, an official had said. Earlier, in a CCTV footage, Kazi was seen entering a number plates shop in suburban Vikhroli and having a conversation with the outlet’s owner. He was also seen taking away a digital video recorder and a computer from the shop.

PUNE, APR 12 (PTI): Stating that people lose their jobs when a lockdown is imposed, senior BJP leader Devendra Fadnavis on Monday alleged the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government is not serious about providing any financial aid to the vulnerable sections. Taking a dig at the state government amid talks that an extended lockdown is imminent in Maharashtra in view of a steep rise in COVID-19 cases, Fadnavis said there is a “lockshahi” in the state now instead of ‘lokshahi’ (democracy). The Leader of Opposition in the Legislative Assembly was addressing a rally for the upcoming bypoll to Pandharpur-Mangalvedha Assembly constituency in Solapur district. The BJP has fielded Samadhan Autade against Bhagirath Bhalke, son of late MLA Bharat Bhalke, of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) for the April 17 contest. “When this government came into power, it was called as Maha Vikas Aghadi but now it has become a ‘Maha Vasooli (extortion) Aghadi’. The way they have started the vasooli from police, farmers and the common man, it shows that all the three ruling parties (Shiv Sena, NCP and Congress) have only one agenda and that

NEW DELHI/MUMBAI, APR 12 (PTI): The CBI has called former Maharashtra home minister Anil Deshmukh for questioning on Wednesday in connection with allegations of corruption levelled against him by former Mumbai Police commissioner Param Bir Singh and suspended officer Sachin Waze, officials said.

ter his two aides Sanjeev Palande and Kundan recorded their statements before the agency, the officials said. The CBI is carrying out a preliminary inquiry into allegations against Deshmukh levelled by Singh after he was removed from the coveted post of Mumbai Police commissioner. The allegations were reportedly corroborated by Waze in the custody of the National Investigation Agency (NIA), which is probing the SUV case, they said. The Bombay High Court had last week directed the CBI to conduct a preliminary inquiry into the allegations levelled by Singh against Deshmukh. In a letter, Singh had said that Deshmukh had asked Waze to allegedly extort over Rs 100 crore a month from bars and restaurants in Mumbai, the officials said.

Infected economy

rices of various commodities which spiked up with the COVID-19 lockdown, have reduced to some extent after supplies were resumed when the lockdown began gradually unlocked. It may be noted that globally there are 13,67,80,837 COVID-19 cases, 29,51,943 deaths and 10,99,95,305 recoveries. In the second week of April, 2021 India surpassed Brazil as the country with the second highest coronavirus cases. India has a total of 1,35,27,717 cases and Brazil thirdplaced with 1,34,82,543cases while the USA with 3,19,22,008 COVID-19 cases tops the COVID-19 chart. With the entire world struggling to cope with Covid-19 and India being no exception, rising vegetable prices has impacted consumers’ kitchen budget during the ongoing lockdown period. However, prices of almost all items have not come down. Retailers, however, blame the sharp rise in vegetable prices on a steep increase in transportation costs. After the steep rise during COVID pandemic lockdown, vegetables in retail markets of major cities have become costlier by 30-40 per cent during the past few weeks due to a sharp increase in transportation cost. The transportation charges went up four times higher than the usual rate. Due to this vegetables and other commodities have also become costlier. It may also be noted that during the lockdown, lakhs of migrant labourers engaged in farm and small scale units have been displaced and most returned or walked back to their home states. The availability of labour for agricultural activities is a major hurdle specifically for the production of high labour-intensive products such as vegetables, fruits, meat, and dairy products. Overall, prices of food items across India have remained high despite marginal decrease after lockdown. The increase of prices has been to the extent of 30 to 40 percent. Even in Dimapur, prices of various items which had shot up by nearly 50% have barely come down but not to pre-pandemic levels. The global oil prices have been declining and significantly affected by the pandemic outbreak which led to an unprecedented fall in its demand and steepest reduction in its price recorded in the month of March 2020. Notwithstanding the consistent fall of crude oil prices, both petrol and diesel have only become dearer for consumers in India, with the government trying to cash in on lower prices by hiking the excise duty of the fuels. Against this backdrop, while people, especially the low income and daily wage earners struggle to make ends meet, the International Monetary Fund(IMF) has projected an impressive 12.5% growth rate for India in 2021, which is higher than that of China. The pandemic has virtually caused havoc on the global economy and the impact of COVID-19 may persist for an extended period of time. However, in short term, the deep economic contraction lessens the demand for industrial commodities, causing additional reduction in prices. In addition to the health and human toll and the global economic downturn, they face substantially lower export and fiscal revenue. The contrast between the weakening demands and decreasing incomes against the IMF growth projection, reflects the divide that is becoming a reality in India.

DailyDevotion Complete and Effective Dominion Death no longer has dominion over Him.…the life that He lives, He lives to God. Likewise you also, reckon yourselves to be dead indeed to sin, but alive to God… —Romans 6:9-11 Co-Eternal Life. Eternal life is the life which Jesus Christ exhibited on the human level. And it is this same life, not simply a copy of it, which is made evident in our mortal flesh when we are born again. Eternal life is not a gift from God; eternal life is the gift of God. The energy and the power which was so very evident in Jesus will be exhibited in us by an act of the absolute sovereign grace of God, once we have made that complete and effective decision about sin. “You shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you…” (Acts 1:8)— not power as a gift from the Holy Spirit; the power is the Holy Spirit, not something that He gives us. The life that was in Jesus becomes ours because of His Cross, once we make the decision to be identified with Him. If it is difficult to get right with God, it is because we refuse to make this moral decision about sin. But once we do decide, the full life of God comes in immediately. Jesus came to give us an endless supply of life— “…that you may be filled with all the fullness of God” (Ephesians 3:19). Eternal life has nothing to do with time. It is the life which Jesus lived when He was down here, and the only Source of life is the Lord Jesus Christ. Even the weakest saint can experience the power of the deity of the Son of God, when he is willing to “let go.” But any effort to “hang on” to the least bit of our own power will only diminish the life of Jesus in us. We have to keep letting go, and slowly, but surely, the great full life of God will invade us, penetrating every part. Then Jesus will have complete and effective dominion in us, and people will take notice that we have been with Him.

holesterol is a waxy, fat-like substance that is found in all the cells in your body. Your body needs cholesterol to make hormones, vitamin D, and substances that help you digest foods. Cholesterol comes from two sources: Your liver which makes all the cholesterol you need. The cholesterol in your body that you do not need comes from animal bodies. If you have more cholesterol in your body than you need, then you are heading for heart disease and heart attacks. A build-up of cholesterol narrows arteries, causing a restriction of blood flow to the heart. Very often a person with high cholesterol levels has no symptoms until he has his first heart attack. This is even more problematic if you are overweight – which you will be, because the food that causes an increase in cholesterol also increases your weight. Though some cholesterol components are stored in the liver and gallbladder, the main storage area is in fat cells called adipocytes. When you have too much cholesterol, these cells swell up and you gain weight. Too much cholesterol can be caused by eating too much fat or carbohydrates. There are two types of cholesterol: HDL and LDL. High density lipoprotein (HDL) is good choles-

terol which protects you from hearts attacks, and strokes, by mopping up excess bad cholesterol. It takes the cholesterol that you don’t need back to the liver. The liver breaks it down so it can be passed out of your body. LDL is bad cholesterol. This blocks the blood supply and causes strokes and heart attacks. Non-HDL takes cholesterol from the liver to the cells around your body. Too much bad cholesterol (non-HDL) can be harmful because it sticks to the inside walls of your arteries. This can lead to fatty material (atheroma) building up - this process is known as atherosclerosis. Cholesterol is found in animal foods, meat, milk, butter and cheese. There are only two things that raise cholesterol in the blood: saturated and trans fats. Saturated fats are found in meats, dairy products, chocolate, baked goods like biscuits and popcorn, margarine, deep-fried, and processed foods. Basically, junk food. Trans fats occur in some fried and processed foods. Also in junk food. In adults, total cholesterol levels less than 200 milligrams per deciliter (mg/ dL) are considered healthy. 200 - 239 mg/dL is borderline high. 240 mg/dL and above is high. LDL cholesterol levels should be less than

Nagaland Post, Dimapur TUESDAY, APRIL 13, 2021

Cholesterol myths & facts 100 mg/dL. How do you know that your cholesterol levels are high? You usually don’t. There are no typical signs if you have high cholesterol, which is why it’s so important to get it checked. It’s a hidden risk factor, which means it happens without us knowing until it’s too late. Some people get soft, yellowish, growths or lesions on the skin, especially round the eyes, called xanthomas. If you are lucky you develop left-sided chest pain, pressure, or fullness; dizziness; unsteady gait; slurred speech; or pain in the lower legs. Any of these conditions may be associated with high cholesterol. How do you flush cholesterol out of your body? Stop eating meat or drinking milk. Avoid ghee, butter and paneer, and seafood like crabs, shrimps and lobsters. Don’t smoke. Exercise. Eat fewer refined grains such as maida. Foods to avoid if you have high cholesterol levels include white

bread, white potatoes, and white rice, highly processed sugars . Fried foods should be avoided, as well as foods high in saturated fats. Eat fruits, vegetables, beans and whole grains, every day. A report from Harvard Health has identified foods that actively decrease cholesterol levels: Oats, barley and whole grains, beans, eggplant and okra, nuts, vegetable oil (canola, sunflower), fruits (mainly apples, grapes, strawberries, and citrus), soy and soy-based foods. Eating just one and one-half cups of cooked oatmeal a day can lower your cholesterol by 5 to 8%. Oatmeal contains soluble and insoluble fibre – two types that your body needs. In June 2020 a report, led by Imperial College London Majid Ezzati, et al. and involving dozens of universities, “Repositioning of the global epicentre of non-optimal cholesterol” was published in Nature. It said that while cholesterol

levels have declined in high income countries, particularly Europe, since 1980, they have increased vastly in lower and middle income countries, with Asia, especially Southeast Asia, now being the centre. The reason for this is the consumption of animal based foods, refined carbohydrates (maida) and palm oil. In short, the heart attack and stroke risks have been globally repositioned with the shifting of a high cholesterol diet. A group of nearly 1,000 researchers, from around the world, analysed data from 1,127 studies comprising 102.6 million adults, to assess global trends in cholesterol levels from 1980 to 2018. This is the largest ever study of global cholesterol levels. Previously cholesterol was considered a problem in high income Western countries. The report said that Belgium, Sweden, Switzerland (the centre of the milk/meat diet) and Iceland (meat) had shown the steepest declines in cholesterol, going from the highest to the lowest. There has been a sharp drop in LDL cholesterol in the UK, according to the British Heart Foundation. China, which had the lowest levels of cholesterol in 1980, was among the highest in 2018. India, Malaysia, Philippines and Thailand have not covered themselves

in glory either. In 1980 Australian women ranked 32nd highest in the world in cholesterol levels. Today they are 146th . Australian men have fallen from 31st highest to 116th. Dr AvulaLaxmaiah, National Institute of Nutrition, one of the authors of the research paper, said LDL cholesterol among Indian men ranked 128th in 1980 and remained the same in 2018. Women are 139th in the global lineup. Other conditions that can lead to high cholesterol levels include diabetes drugs that increase LDL cholesterol and decrease HDL cholesterol, such as progestins, anabolic steroids, and corticosteroids. India is one of the highest users of steroids – not directly, but through these being fed to chicken. The authors have suggested that each country in Asia set into place prices, and regulatory policies, that shift diets to non saturated fats. But, at the end of the day it is not prices that will decide – meat/chicken and milk are already expensive but it doesn’t stop you from eating them. You will have to take a personal decision, depending on how much you value your life or the lives of your family. Union Minister for Health and Family Welfare Harsh Vardhan explained the reasons and objects of the Bill: “I would say that most of you must have paid a visit to a hospital at some point of time in your life and I wish not, but you might have had to. Please recall those days and remember the people who took care of you and who brought you out of your illness. You may remember the name of the doctor. You may remember the name of the hospital. But do you also remember the name of

hat is good business? The answer to that question will drive the fundamentals of business in the future. This discussion has been underway. In 2019, for instance, the European Union passed legislation to ensure full Environment, Social and Gover nance (ESG) disclosure by listed companies and investment funds. Goldman Sachs even declared that it would cease supporting the IPOs of companies that have an all-male board of directors. In August 2019, one of the United States (US)’s largest business groups, the Business Roundtable, replaced its longstanding “shareholder primacy” mantra to urge companies to consider the well being of environment and workers, alongside their pursuit of profits. The pandemic has intensified this discussion on the nature, role and purpose of business. The crisis provided an unflinching perspective on how businesses really conduct themselves — the level of scrutiny applied to businesses (and even, business leaders) has been unprecedented. And quite rightly so. Business is a useful metaphor for capitalism itself; the basis of our society, where and how we create value, and how we define success. As part of our 75th celebrations, the Mahindra Group launched a public conversation on what constitutes good business. The results clearly reflect the shifting sentiments regarding business’s role, and what re-

the persons who took your blood samples, gave you physiotherapy, took your X-ray, advised you on what you should eat, checked your eyesight, assisted your doctor or surgeon, looked into microscopes and bid you a farewell with a smile. Who are these people?” They are varied health professionals — the lab technicians, physiotherapists, radiographers, dieticians, record keepers, optometrists, X-ray technicians, and many more, who are a critical part of the healthcare system and the foundation of the pyramid of the entire healthcare system. According to studies, the role of doctors, undoubtedly critical, varies between 25 to 50 per cent in the entire healthcare chain. A wag said “doctor is next to God, nurse is next to the doctor and the pharmacist is closest to the patient”, but there are many others who are as vital and integral to this chain. In fact, these professionals are the bedrock of the complex healthcare system. After enacting the National

Medical Commission Bill, 2019 — which was fiercely contested by a large body of medical practitioners, another transformative piece of legislation, the NCAHP Act, has been enacted which covers a wide range of healthcare professions which were unrecognised or unregulated to date. The Act is a paradigm shift in healthcare delivery as it recognises the specialised skills and contributions of more than 56 types of the allied and healthcare professionals. The nation, nay the world, has witnessed the invaluable contribution of these professionals during COVID-19 as the frontline health workers who risked their lives every day fighting the pandemic. The Act would regulate and leverage the qualified allied and healthcare workforce and ensure high-quality multidisciplinary care in line with the vision of the universal health coverage moving towards a more care -accessible and teambased model. The Act would reform and regulate this entire sector in order to give these professionals

their due, increase their employment opportunities and, more importantly, enhance their dignity by recognising their true worth, within the country and globally. The Act envisages the establishment of a Central statutory body as the National Commission for Allied and Healthcare Professions. The commission will frame policies and standards, regulate professional conduct and prescribe qualifications for all these professions. A National Allied and Healthcare Advisory Council to advise the national commission with representation from all the States is provided under the Act to enable adequate representation from all the States and Union Territories. Further, each State will have a separate State Council with four autonomous Boards pertaining to undergraduate education, postgraduate education, assessment, rating, ethics and registration. While doctors, nurses, dentists and pharmacists in India are regulated through their respective regulatory

The emergence of good businesses

ally constitutes a good deal, or job, or investment. According to Mahindra’s Good Business Study, covering over 2,000 Indian citizens, 62.42% of respondents cited society and community as critical to their idea of good business. From an employee perspective, nearly half (49.35%) the respondents believe that equality of opportunity, diversity, flexible working and an innovative environment are the top qualities of a good employer. Such new definitions of what constitutes good business are even reflected in investment choices. 70.27% of respondents claim that they would never invest in a business they did not consider to be genuinely good. Two factors have influenced these changing perceptions of good business over the last ten years. First, the emergence and activism of the millennial generation (typically, aged between 25 and 35). According to Deloitte’s most recent Millennial Survey, more than a quarter of millennials would choose not to purchase from an organisation because of its stance on a political issue, and 29% would do the same, based on the comments or behaviour of a company leader. 70% of millennials expect their employers to focus on societal or mission-driven issues. No other generation has exerted such an impact on the way we do business, on employee experience, and on consumer expectations. They represent one of the last decade’s biggest drivers of good business.

This is also reflected in our own Good Business study. 45.27% of millennial respondents relate good business to non-financial metrics such as workplace diversity and environment. By contrast, just 39.22% of those over the age of 46 applied the same metrics. Second, the overwhelming priority for many traditional and existing businesses, including ours, has been to ensure that they are genuinely good. For example, minimising the environmental impact of the production and use of products, ensuring transparent and fulfilling careers for employees, and communicating the same to investors and the wider community are factors that contribute to companies making it to the Great Places to Work lists. Some of our own businesses are a case in point: Susten, for instance, delivers clean energy to some of India’s remotest regions; Mahindra Waste To Energy Solutions Ltd converts organic waste into Bio-CNG and fertilizer; while Mahindra Electric Mobility Ltd has been a pioneer in electric transport. Collectively, these businesses epitomise this transformation towards good business, and are already generating over half a billion dollars every year. Such businesses epitomise the purpose of our Group – enabling people to rise and achieve the best of themselves. In effect, this encapsulates what good business means to us. What do these trends suggest about the coming decade?

One, in demographic terms, it will be fascinating to see whether and how today’s millennials retain their influence, as tomorrow’s managers, entrepreneurs and business leaders. Two, I am particularly interested in their successors, Generation Z, who are under 25. This generation of consumers will increase their per capita spending by more than 70% in the next five years. How will they impose their perceptions of “good” business on the way they consume, work, and invest? One recent study describes them as even more committed to our planet and other ethical considerations. A staggering 92% surveyed said they care about social and environmental issues, and 89% are worried about the health of our planet. Significantly, 94% believe that companies should help address such urgent issues; this is an even higher percentage than their millennial predecessors. Such statistics provides a clue — and an optimistic one — to the nature of good business in the coming decade. Finally, the approach of adapting existing businesses towards this new set of considerations that characterised the last decade will be gradually replaced by businesses that are created to be fundamentally good – good by design. Businesses will define their existence — their products, means of production, relationships with employees and community — in terms of their wider role in society. Here, technology will play a

bodies, the allied and healthcare professions are still unstructured, and unregulated. Globally, most of the countries have a regulatory framework for standardised education and training. But in India, there was an absence of a regulatory framework and lack of standardised education curriculum as well as training for these allied and healthcare professionals, a void now removed. Also, the Act makes a significant shift from the doctor-led model to a more care-accessible and team- based model. The NCAHP Act, 2020, is a landmark legislation which will go down in the history of healthcare revolution in India. It will transform the healthcare scenario and make a paradigm shift in the ministration of the entire healthcare system and make it efficacious. Apparently, India is on the course of wholesale health sector reforms. Devender Singh Aswal, Former Additional Secretary, Lok Sabha. (The views expressed are personal).

crucial role — not merely in the conception of products and services, but in how they are produced and delivered to consumers. The transformation of the education sector provides a case in point. India’s EdTech market is expected to grow from less than US$1 billion to eight or ten times that size over the coming five years. The sector is the epitome of good “by design”, employing technology to deliver relevant skills to Indians who, in many cases, would otherwise not have access to it. These clues from the last decade provide a glimpse into the future of good business. Will this still be the most important discussion of

the next decade in 2030? Ideally, I would hope not. The best outcome would be that the good prefix is discarded as irrelevant, And that the nature of business will be inherently good by design. Good and business would become synonymous. Such businesses are already making an impact, even in terms of financial returns. For society, the return would go well beyond financial metrics and be far more significant. By 2030, what would be the point of contemplating any other type of business? Provide financial support and job opportunities

Sir,

The recent pandemic took a heavy toll on many Naga’s living outside the State. Many had to resign due to lack of financial support from the Government and many have been rendered jobless. Considering the condition in Nagaland, the number of job opportunities is very thin and the amount of unemployed youths has been increasing day by day. Most of the people working out of the state toil hard yet their incomes are very minimal. Therefore, I would like to appeal the concerned authorities to atleast provide some financial support or subsidies for the working youths. In addition, I would also like to request the government to create more job opportunities for our youths and provide youth empowering programme such as skill enhancement programmes to ensure that our youths have a stable ground to build their career on. Phoying Konyak, Guwahati

Mamata ‘clean bowled’: PM Modi

BARDHAMAN/KALYANI, APR 12 (PTI): Drawing a cricket analogy, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Monday the people of Bengal have hit so many fours and sixes in the first four phases of the assembly polls that the BJP has already completed its century and the TMC is on course to being wiped out. Modi, who is on a whirlwind election tour of the state addressed rallies in Bardhaman and Kalyani, where he came down hard on Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, accusing her of instigating people against central forces on election duty in the state. The prime Minister also launched a blistering attack on Banerjee, saying she did not care to express regret after a “leader very close to her” called Scheduled Castes “beggars”. “People of Bengal hit so many fours and sixes that BJP has al-

ready completed a century (of seats) in the first 4 phases of assembly polls. They have wiped out the TMC in half the match (aadha mein poora saaf).” “People of Bengal have clean bowled Didi in Nandigram and have asked her entire team to leave the field,” he told an election rally in Bardhaman. Mocking TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee’s “Ma, Mati, Manush” slogan, the prime minister said, “Tormenting ‘Ma’, looting ‘Mati’ (motherland) and bloodshed of ‘Manush’

(people) is its reality.” Alleging that Banerjee incited people against central forces, he referred to the killing of four in the firing by CISF personnel in Cooch Behar on April 10. “In the last 10 years Mamata Banerjee conspired to deny the scheduled castes, the poor and the deprived sections their rights through ‘chappa vote’ (rigging). “What happened in Cooch Behar was the consequence of this conspiracy. Victory and defeat are part of democracy but you will not be allowed to snatch away people’s right to vote,” he told another rally in Kalyani in Nadia district. He said Banerjee’s policies have snuffed out the lives of children of countless mothers. In both the rallies, Modi castigated Banerjee over a TMC leader and candidate’s comments against the Scheduled Castes equating them with beggars.

KO L K ATA , A P R 1 2 (PTI): Lashing out at the Election Commission over its decision to bar her from campaigning for 24 hours, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said she would stage a dharna in the city on Tuesday to protest against the poll panel’s “unconstitutional decision”. Taking to Twitter, she wrote, “To protest against the undemocratic and unconstitutional decision of the Election Commission of India, I will sit on dharna tomorrow at Gandhi Murti, Kolkata from 12 noon.” The poll panel’s order came after Banerjee’s remarks against central forces and a statement which had alleged religious overtones.

Special Judge Geetanjli Goel, who is likely to pronounce the order on April 29, heard arguments from the counsel appearing for Delhi Police as well as Tharoor. During the arguments, while the police sought framing of various charges, including 306 (abetment of suicide), Senior Advocate Vikas Pahwa, appearing for Mr Tharoor, told the court that the investigation conducted by the SIT completely exonerated the politician of all the charges levelled against him.

BENGALURU, APR 12 (PTI): Bus services were largely hampered for the sixth consecutive day in Karnataka, as the indefinite strike by employees of the road transport corporations on wage related issues continued on Monday, even as some workers reported for duty. With the stalemate between the government and employees of the four transport corporations over their demand for wages as per the 6th Pay Commission continuing, a majority of workers did not turn up for work, resulting in buses remaining off roads, affecting commuters. a few RTC employees have returned to work and are operating buses on some routes in the city and different parts of the state. Deputy Chief Minister Laxman Savadi, who also holds the transport portfolio, said in a statement that more than 3,200 buses belonging to RTCs were operating by this af-

ternoon, and thanked employees who returned to work, responding to the government’s call. Noting that attempts are being made to stop the employees from returning to work, he said legal action is being taken against those indulging in such acts and FIRs have been booked against them.

CIES): Piled on gurneys, lying on the floor and even outside in the sun by the dumpsters - skin-crawling scenes of bodies at Raipur’s biggest government hospital highlight the huge human cost of the second wave of COVID-19 in India and shows what happens when the country’s creaky healthcare system is pushed to its brink. Overwhelmed by the unprecedented number of deaths, Dr Bhim Rao Ambedkar Memorial Hospital in Raipur has run out of space to store bodies. Far from freezers as is the procedure, they are now being kept pretty much anywhere with available space, a video clip recorded over the weekend shows. Hospital authorities

the bodies of patients who are dying of COVID-19 are piling up at the mortuary faster than they can be cremated. The hospital’s intensive care units and oxygenequipped beds have been at almost 100 per cent occupancy for the past week. “No one could have guessed that there would be so many deaths all at once. We have enough freezers for the usual number of deaths. But we just can’t understand how places with one to two deaths are reporting 10-20. If we prepare for 10-20, 50-60 people are dying. How can we arrange freezers for so many people at once? Even crematoriums are overwhelmed,” Raipur’s Chief Medical and Health Officer Meera Baghel said.

NEW DELHI, APR 12 (AGENCIES): A new PIL (public interest litigation) over alleged corruption in the Rafale fighter jet deal will be heard by the Supreme Court after two weeks, the Chief Justice of India told the petitioner. ML Sharma, an advocate, had requested the Supreme Court for an independent probe, following fresh allegations that the 2016 deal between India and France also involved the payment of 1.1 million Euros by aviation major Dassault to an Indian middleman. French publication Mediapart, citing an investigation by the country’s anticorruption agency, reported that Dassault Aviation had paid about one million Euros to an Indian company called Defsys Solutions for 50 models of the aircraft which were to be given as “gifts”. Sushen Gupta, who runs Defsys Solutions, is being investigated in the Agusta-Westland helicopter scam. He was earlier arrested and granted bail in the case. Defsys, one of the subcontractors of Dassault in India, denied the allegations, say they were totally

unfounded. “The company (Dassault) said the money was used to pay for the manufacture of 50 large replica models of Rafale jets, even though the inspectors were given no proof that these models were made,” Mediapart reported. One of these models can be seen outside the residence of the Air Chief. Sources say other models are installed at the Western Air Command, the IAF base in Gwalior; some are headed to the new Rafale squadron being set up in Hasimara and others lie in a warehouse waiting to be installed. Following the fresh allegations, the Congress had demanded Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s statement on the new reveal. India bought 36 fighter jets from France in a Rs.59,000-crore inter-governmental deal in 2016. The fourth batch of the Rafale jets arrived in India earlier this month. The three jets were refueled mid-air over UAE. The country received the first batch of five planes in July last year, a second batch of three Rafale jets in November and a third batch this January.

The trial showed that on average the 971 patients who had been assigned inhaled budesonide recovered three days more quickly than nearly 2,000 people who received standard care. Nearly a third got better within two weeks compared to just 22 per cent of the control group. Associate Professor Gail Hayward, co-lead investigator of the Principle trial and a practicing GP, said: “For the first time in the pandemic I now have evidence for a treatment to offer my patients, the ones who are at home, not hospital, who develop Covid. “We found that for patients at higher risk of severe Covid-19, we can shorten the duration of their illness, improve their wellbeing and they do better when they’ve recovered. We can certainly see a better future for patients with a high risk of severe Covid.”The researchers said budesonide could be rolled out quickly because it is cheap, widely available and has very few side effects. One inhaler costs just £14.

All patients enrolled in the Principal trial were aged over 50 with an underlying health condition that put them at a higher risk of serious Covid, or aged over 65. Patients were asked to inhale 800 micrograms twice a day for 14 days and were followed-up for 28 days. The study also showed that just 8.5 per cent of the budesonide group were hospitalised within 28 days, compared with 10.3 per cent of the control group - a 17 per cent decrease - although the researchers said it was difficult to tell if the effect was real because cases were dropping in Britain during the trial. Joint chief investigator Professor Richard Hobbs, Head of Oxford University’s Nuffield Department of Primary Care Health Sciences, said the results were a “significant milestone” in the pandemic. “Unlike other proven treatments, budesonide is effective as a treatment at home and during the early stages of the illness. This is a significant milestone for this pandemic and a major achievement for community-based research.”

MUMBAI, APR 12 (PTI): The Sensex plummeted 1,708 points while the Nifty crashed below the 14,350level on Monday as investors pressed the panic button amid the massive second wave of COVID-19 infections across the country. The second wave is turning out to be much worse than expected, and participants are now reassessing their recovery forecasts amid increasing localised lockdowns, traders said. An unabated fall in the rupee sapped confidence further, they added. Posting its biggest fall since February 26, the 30-share BSE Sensex sank 1,707.94 points or 3.44 per cent to end at 47,883.38. Similarly, the broader NSE Nifty plunged 524.05 points or 3.53 per cent to finish at 14,310.80. Barring Dr Reddy’s, which climbed 4.83 per cent,

CTYO, CTSU back move to shift DC office

(From p-1) Terming the demand by some section of people for bifurcation of rural and urban administration as absurd and injudicious, the two Chümoukedima bodies said it was very unbecoming of the Dimapur town-based CSOs trying to represent the whole of Dimapur district. They said as these CSOs did not represent the whole district, they should not oppose progress for their selfish goals. Reacting to claims that students would face problems in commuting and other hardships if the DC office was shifted to Chümoukedima, CTYO and CTSU pointed out that there were many schools and colleges located further away from Dimapur town. Mentioning how students from other localities, colonies and villages under Dimapur district were facing the hardships now, both the organisations asked whether their burden would not lessen if the DC office got a little closer to them. CTYO and CTSU claimed that the move to shift the DC office would be beneficial for all the inhabitants of the district and that those from beyond Dimapur town would not have to endure any hardship. For the welfare and best interest of everyone from the district, both the organisations called for coming out from “our comfort zone” and accept the beneficial changes that lay ahead with welcoming arms. They also appealed strongly to the authorities concerned to make necessary arrangements to shift the DC office without any further delay.

Pakistan will not be the same without him,” she said. “He will be deeply missed. He was a rare kind of individual, not just because of his professional capabilities but as a human being,” the report quoted as saying human rights activist and former chairperson of the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) Zohra Yusuf. Rehman worked as director of HRCP for two decades and was also the group’s secretary-general till December 2016, Geo news reported. He was a strong supporter of the country’s minorities, including Christians and Hindus, and cam-

Myanmar’s ruling junta issues Investigation finds Syria likely behind 2018 chlorine attack fresh charges against Suu Kyi Yangon (Myanmar), Apr 12 (AP): Myanmar’s ruling military squared off against its opponents in the courts, the streets and the countryside Monday, showing no sign of relenting in its crackdown against those opposed to February’s coup. Aung San Suu Kyi, who led the elected government toppled in the military takeover, was accused of a fresh criminal charge when she appeared by video link before a judge in the capital Naypyitaw on Monday, according to her lawyers. Suu Kyi was accused of breaching a law intended to control the spread of the coronavirus, the second such charge against her under the same law. She is already facing charges of illegally importing walkietalkies, unlicensed use of them, inciting public unrest and breaking the official secrets act. The junta also has accused Suu Kyi of corruption and presented on state television what it said was evidence that she took bribes. Suu Kyi’s supporters say the prosecutions are politically motivated tactics to try to legitimise the Feb. 1 coup and discredit her. The generals overthrew Suu Kyi’s government less than three months after she won a landslide victory in a general election and any conviction could see her banned from a future election. The coup put a halt to the progress Myanmar had

Aung San Suu Kyi

made toward greater democratization after five decades of military rule. The takeover and the bloody crackdown on opposition that has followed has led to calls for an arms embargo on the country and other international sanctions that could pressure the military into a return to more democratic rule. As of Sunday, 706 protesters and bystanders have been verified as killed in the post-coup crackdown, said the Assistance Association for Political Prisoners, which tracks casualties and arrests. Despite the lethal threat protesters returned to the streets and rural byways of southern Myanmar on Monday, determined to keep public demonstrations going. In Launglone Township near the city of Dawei, a large group mounted motorbikes and rode through the villages of Pandale and Nyin Maw, red banners snapping in the breeze as they sang and chanted slogans of resistance.

B’desh PM bats for equipping UN peacekeepers better

Dhaka, Apr 12 (PTI): Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Monday voiced concern over the alarming rise in the deaths of UN peacekeepers in operations across the world and called for appropriate training and equipment to deal with new challenges. Addressing the closing ceremony of a multilateral UN-mandated counterterrorism exercise “Shantir Ogroshena” or “Front Runner of Peace”, Hasina, said the time has come to make crisis-specific decisions on the field in UN peacekeeping operations. “The time has come to equip peacekeepers with appropriate training and equipment to deal with the new upcoming crises and make crisis-specific decisions on the field in UN peacekeep-

ing operations,” she said. Hasina said the number of deaths of peacekeepers in “alarming rate” in different UN peacekeeping missions particularly requires them to be equipped with apt training and equipment. “I hope required measures will be taken to this end,” she said during her virtual speech from her official Ganabhaban residence in Dhaka. According to the

UN Peacekeeping website, a total of 130 peacekeepers were killed in various operations in 2020 while in 2019 the figure stood at 103. The closing ceremony was held at Bangabandhu Cantonment in central Tangail district. Indian Army chief General Manoj Mukund Naravane along with his Bangladesh counterpart General Aziz Ahmed and military commanders of several other countries and UN missions joined the function. Bangladesh Army organised the 10-day exercise to mark the country’s founder Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s birth centenary and golden jubilee of its 1971 independence from Pakistan through a nine-month Liberation War, backed by India.

In Dawei itself, students, teachers and engineers carried their message of defiance through the city on foot. Marches took place in other cities and towns as well, and a few carried on a trend of assigning a quirky theme to their protests. Demonstrators in Mandalay, the country’s secondbiggest city, held a “Watermelon Strike,” marching with big slices and making anti-coup displays featuring slogans painted on the melons or attached to them. In Yangon, five public city buses caught fire before dawn, with no indications of who might have set them alight. Such mysterious attacks have mounted in recent weeks, with the junta blaming protesters and protesters blaming the junta. More intense violence took place in the northern state of Kachin, where two Myanmar military fighter jets attacked a base belonging to the Kachin Independence Organization, which is the main political group representing the Kachin ethnic group in the area. The organisation, which seeks autonomy for the Kachin, maintains its own military force, and said its base has also been under artillery attack, reported the Kachin News Group, Their report also said Kachin forces on Monday staged a successful attack to drive away a Myanmar military force guarding a bridge on a major road.

The Hague, Apr 12 (AP): An investigation by the global chemical weapons watchdog found “reasonable grounds to believe” that a Syrian air force military helicopter dropped a chlorine cylinder on a Syrian town in 2018, sickening 12 people, the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons said Monday. It is the second time that the OPCW’s Investigation and Identification Team has concluded that Syrian government armed forces likely were responsible for a gas attack. Last year, the team also found reasonable grounds to believe that the Syrian Arab Air Force was responsible for attacks using chlorine and the nerve agent sarin in March 2017 in the town of Latamneh. Syria has repeatedly been accused of using chemical weapons during the country’s grinding civil war. The government of President Bashar Assad denies

the claims. In the latest report, the OPCW investigation team said it found evidence that a military helicopter belonging to the Tiger Forces of the Syrian air force dropped at least one chlorine cylinder on the rebel-held northern Syrian town of Saraqeb on February 4, 2018.

Iran blames Israel for attack on nuke facility

T e h r a n, A p r il 1 2 (IANS): Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif on Monday described the cyberattack on the Natanz nuclear facility as an act of terrorism and blamed Israel for it. The plant in central Iran produces, among other things, new centrifuges for uranium enrichment, dpa news agency reported. “The Zionists want

to sabotage Iran’s nuclear achievements and the nuclear negotiations (in Vienna) with these terrorist operations,” Zarif told Parliament on Monday. Neither, however, will happen, he said. “Our revenge is that we will continue successfully in both areas,” Zarif added. Israel has so far not commented on the allegations.

D h a k a , A p r il 1 2 (IANS): Amid a surge in new Covid-19 cases, the Bangladeshi government on Monday issued a fresh set of directives for a nationwide “full lockdown” from wednesday onwards. The Cabinet Division on Monday issued a circular with the directives to be effective from 6 a.m. on Wednesday to the midnight of April 21. In line with the directives, all government, semi-government, autonomous and private offices will be closed. But the ban will not be applicable to airports, land ports and maritime ports and their offices. The new lockdown imposed with stricter rules demands the closure of markets and shopping malls, but allows restaurants and hotels to remain open from morning to evening but only for takeaway or online services. According to the directives, all public transport services will be suspended, but goods-laden vehicles, production system and emergency services will not come under the purview of the lockdown. Also offices, employees and transports involved in law and order enforcement and emergency services, relief distribution, health service, electricity, water, gas/fuel, fire service, activities at ports, telephone and Internet, telecommunication and other services will remain out of the purview of the restriction.

British media began digging into Cameron’s work for Greensill after the company’s collapse forced the owner of Liberty Steel, which employs about 5,000 people, to seek a government bailout. Greensill was one of the company’s key financial backers. The developments came after Cameron made his first comments on the Greensill late Sunday, when he released an 1,800word written statement. A series of news reports have revealed that Cameron sent text messag-

Capital, began working as a government adviser in 2011. Cameron said he started working for Greensill in August 2018, and that he received shares in the company as part of his compensation. He rejected press reports that he expected the shares to be worth USD 60 million when Greensill went public. “Their value was nowhere near the amount speculated in the press,” he said. Brown said the government must act quickly in response to the Greensill affair because it has the potential to bring public service into “disrepute,” just like the parliamentary expenses scandal of 2008. At that time, several members of Parliament were found to have improperly inflated their expenses, leading to new rules governing their conduct. “For me, there are principles about public service,” Brown told the BBC. “It cannot ever become a platform for private gain. Ministers must never be lobbying — former ministers, prime ministers — must never be lobbying for commercial purposes.”

BAFTA 2021 pays tribute to Irrfan Khan, Ant resembles human in social isolation: Study Rishi Kapoor during In Memoriam segment S ocial isolation results in changes of behavior and activity of immune and stress genes. Ants react to social isolation in a similar way as do humans and other social mammals. A study by an Israeli-German research team has revealed alterations to the social and hygienic behavior of ants that had been isolated from their group. The research team was particularly surprised by the fact that immune and stress genes were downregulated in the brains of the isolated ants. “This makes the immune system less efficient, a phenomenon that is also apparent in socially isolating humans – notably at present during the COVID-19 crisis,” said Professor Susanne Foitzik, who headed up the study at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz (JGU). The study on a species of ant native to Germany has recently been published in Molecular Ecology. Effects of isolation in social insects little studied so far Humans and other social mammals experience isolation from their group as stressful, having

a negative impact on their general well-being and physical health. “Isolated people become lonely, depressed, and anxious, develop addictions more easily, and suffer from a weakened immune system and impaired overall health,” added Professor Inon Scharf, lead author of the article and cooperation partner of the Mainz research group at Tel Aviv University in Israel. While the effects of isolation have been extensively studied in social mammals such as humans and mice, less is known about how social insects respond in comparable situations – even

though they live in highly evolved social systems. Ants, for instance, live their entire lives as members of the same colony and are dependent on their colony mates. The worker ants relinquish their own reproductive potential and devote themselves to feeding the larvae, cleaning and defending the nest, and searching for food, while the queen does little more than just lay eggs. The research team looked at the consequences of social isolation in the case of ants of the species Temnothorax nylanderi. These ants inhabit cavities in acorns and sticks on the ground in European

forests, forming colonies of a few dozen workers. Young workers engaged in brood care were taken singly from 14 colonies and kept in isolation for varying lengths of time, from one hour to a maximum of 28 days. The study was conducted between January and March 2019 and highlighted three particular aspects in which changes were observed. After the end of their isolation, the workers were less interested in their adult colony mates, but the length of time they spent in brood contact increased; they also spent less time grooming themselves. “This reduction in hygienic behavior may make the ants more susceptible to parasites, but it is also a feature typical of social deprivation in other social organisms,” explained Professor Susanne Foitzik. Stress due to isolation adversely affects the immune system While the study revealed significant changes in the behaviors of the isolated insects, its findings with regard to gene activity were even more striking: Many genes related to immune system function and

stress response were downregulated. In other words, these genes were less active. “This finding is consistent with studies on other social animals that demonstrated a weakening of the immune system after isolation,” said Professor Inon Scharf. The discovery by the team of biologists led by Professor Susanne Foitzik is the first of its kind, combining behavioral and genetic analyses on the effects of isolation in social insects. “Our study shows that ants are as affected by isolation as social mammals are and suggests a general link between social well-being, stress tolerance, and immunocompetence in social animals,” concluded Foitzik, summarizing the results of the Israeli-German study. Foitzik is also collaborating with her Israeli partner Professor Inon Scharf and with co-author and group leader Dr. Romain Libbrecht of JGU on a new joint project on the fitness benefits and the molecular basis of spatial learning in ants, funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG). egadeth are just hours away from finishing their new album. The thrash metal titan’s bassist David Ellefson has revealed the follow-up to 2016’s ‘Dystopia’ is in “the final hours getting everything done”. He told Rock Music Star: “I was actually just down there [at the recording studio] last week. I went to Nashville to just put a couple of little, tiny finishing touches on some stuff. We’re literally in the final hours of getting everything done. Obviously, COVID slowed things down.” He also added, “Kiko [Loureiro, guitar] lives over in Finland now, and there were some delays last year, just with travel and with everything shutting down. But me and Dirk [Verbeuren, drums] got down there pretty quickly — by May and June [of last year], we were in there cutting tracks. It’s been good, though.” Frontman Dave Mustaine battled throat cancer in 2019 but was given the all-clear the following year, and despite them having to reschedule some shows as a result, the Rock and Roll Hall of Famers told fans they were ploughing ahead with work on their 16th LP. Exploring Mana Foresta: India’s First Vertical Forest Tower

T

he modern fast-growing urban lifestyle is full of pace and thrill. The trend towards migrating to a city has been in practice since quite a few centuries. However, that deep and silent aspiration to live in a natural surrounding has never died. That same aspiration is now booming with people again as they are being drawn towards bringing nature to the heart of cities. Recently, the trend of living a symbiosis life with nature at one side and modern facilities of a city on the other side is increasingly becoming popular. The fantasy of living in the forest, enjoying birds chirping in the morning, and the fresh breath of purest oxygen is nothing less than a panacea. For a city dweller, this

kind of lifestyle is restricted to the imagination or restricted to once-in-a-while vacation only. What if this fantasy turns out to be a reality and one does not have to even travel to some interior forest to experience such a life? Lately, real estate developers have started

capit a l izing o n this fantasythemed living experience. Going forward with this trend, Mana Projects, with their latest project

– Mana Foresta has turned this imagination into a reality. Mana Foresta, situated on Sarjapur Road, Bangalore, is a tower complex of premium apartments in Bangalore that proudly displays how forest life can be brought to the city. Originally inspired by the Bosco Verticale, a building with a similar concept that was completed in 2014 in Milan, Italy, Mana Foresta on Sarjapur road aims to bring the same futuristic concept to India. Bangalore, being a truly cosmopolitan city and the tech hub of the country was perfect to initiate a project of this scale. For many years, the business has grown slowly, since the Green Building model was first launched many years back. They h ave

begun with eco-friendly features, landscape balconies and since then the role of nature in their ventures has increased slowly over time and this finally led to Mana Foresta becoming its magnificent opus. (PTI) K Y M C

Atletico’s lead cut after 1-1 draw with Betis M A D R I D, A P R 1 2 (IANS): Atletico Madrid’s lead at the top of La Liga was reduced to just one point after a dramatic 30th round of matches. Atletico were held to a 1-1 draw away to Betis in a game where Yannick Carrasco put them ahead after just five minutes only for Cristian Tello to equalise in the 20th minute of the game on Sunday, Xinhua news reported. Atletico lost Joao Felix and Kieran Trippier through injury in the game, while Thomas Lemar also picked up an injury before kick-off. Angel Correa missed a chance in the last minute of the game, leaving Atletico just one point ahead of Real Madrid, who beat FC Barcelona on Saturday. First-half goals from Karim Benzema and Toni Kroos were enough for Real Madrid to win a hugely entertaining Clasico at home to Barcelona in a game that saw Oscar Mingueza pull a second-half goal back for Barca and youngster Ilaix Moriba rattle the Madrid crossbar with virtually the last kick of the match.

Benzema opened the scoring in the 13th minute with a backheel after Lucas Vazquez’s cross and Kroos doubled Madrid’s lead with a deflected free kick in the 27th minute as Madrid made Barca suffer on the break. Boxers gear up for Worlds in lockdown-hit Polish city NEW DELHI, APR 12 (IANS): The Polish city of Kielce is facing lockdown because of a new wave of Covid-19 in Europe but it is also gearing up to host the AIBA Youth Men’s and Women’s World Boxing Championships starting on Tuesday. Boxers from more than 50 countries are participating in the 10-day long tournament. The Boxing Federation of India (BFI) is fielding a 20-member squad, including 10 in girls’ category, in the season’s first global competition. According to an official with the Indian boxing squad, the local organising committee has advised all the participating teams to strictly follow Covid-19 protocols of social distancing and wearing of masks. “There are four hotels for the participating teams and officials. But team hotels are out of bounds for

local visitors or tourists. The hotels have been opened for sports competition. The training venue is different from the main competition arena which will open when the event starts,” an official with the Indian team told IANS. According to the official, there are lots of restrictions for the boxers as they are only allowed to venture out of the team hotel for training. “Since there is a boxing tournament in the city, a few medical shops and restaurants are open,” said the Indian team official. The fixtures for the competition will be announced on Monday evening. “As of now, we don’t have much idea about the strength of the participating teams as several countries are not fielding boxers in all the 10 weight categories,” said a coach of the Indian team.

the balance until the final whistle as Real Madrid sat deep to defend in the closing minutes. Villarreal’s hopes of qualifying for next season’s Europa League suffered a setback as second-half goals from Jon Moncayola and Ante Budimir gave Osasuna a surprise 2-1 win in the Estadio de la Ceramica. Real Sociedad were unable

to capitalize on Villarreal’s defeat as they saw Valencia fight back from 2-0 down to claim a 2-2 draw in the Mestalla Stadium. Ander Guevara after 33 minutes and Alexander Isak on the stroke of halftime, put ‘la Real’ 2-0 ahead, but Valencia (who had seen Carlos Soler miss a penalty at 0-0) got back into the game thanks to a

goal from Daniel Wass, with Gabriel Paulista’s powerful 74th-minute header assuring the points were shared. Valencia striker Maxi Gomez was sent off with 10 minutes left to play after apparently saying something out of turn to the referee. Valladolid are still in trouble as Granada scored two late goals through Jorge Molina and Quini to cancel out Fabian Orellana’s first-half penalty. A dreadful own goal from Getafe midfielder gave Cadiz a 1-0 win away to Getafe on Saturday lunchtime and left his side with work to avoid relegation.Alaves goalkeeper Fernando Pacheco made three vital saves to deny Sancet, Unai Nunez and Alex Berenguer to earn his side a 0-0 draw away to Athletic Club Bilbao in Javier Calleja’s debut as coach. That point sees Alaves climb above Eibar, who drop to the bottom of the table after Jorge de Frutos’s goal in the second minute of first-half injury time extended their winless run to 13 games.

Goals from Harmanpreet Singh (11th minute), Lalit Upadhyay (25th) and Mandeep Singh (58th) on Sunday gave the visitors a deserved triumph over Los Leones, adding three more points to the two they had claimed against the hosts in Saturday’s shoot-out, which earned them a bonus point. By virtue of this win, India, with 15 points from eight games, climbed up to fourth place in the FIH Hockey Pro League standings, moving one point ahead of Australia having played the same number of games. India, Argentina and Australia will play against each other at the forthcoming Olympic Games, where they have been drawn in Pool A alongside Spain,

New Zealand and home favourites Japan. Argentina sit sixth in the FIH Hockey Pro League standings, with 11 points from 12 games. Argentina star ted brightly and would have been ahead had it not been for some excellent saves from India goalkeeper Krishan Bahadur Pathak, who twice denied Martin Ferreiro. Harmanpreet then converted India’s first penalty corner of the game in the 11th minute. Lalit doubled India’s lead when he showed light-

ning quick reactions in the second quarter, pouncing on a save from Argentina custodian Juan Vivaldi to slot home. The strike gave the visitors a deserved reward after a lengthy period of probing possession. The result was confirmed two minutes from the final hooter when Mandeep fired home from close range, losing his footing but keeping his composure to guide an backhand effort into the net. “I think we defended well,” said India goalkeeper Pathak, who was named Player of the Match.

Kings XI beat Rajasthan Royals by 4 runs C H E N NA I , A P R 1 2 (IANS): Sanju Samson (119 off 63 balls) scored a hundred on his Indian Premier League (IPL) captaincy debut but couldn’t take Rajasthan Royals (RR) past the finish line, getting dismissed off the last of the match as his team lost to Punjab Kings (PK) by four runs at the Wankhede Stadium on Monday night. RR looked very much in the game throughout as Samson brought the equation down to 5 runs off two balls. However, he refused to take a run on the second last ball after he had hit it to deep extra cover which could have fetched them a run, even a double. Instead, he eyed a glory shot for six on the last ball, but holed out to deep extra cover as his side fell short by four runs. RR had got off to a worse possible start, losing their power-hitting allrounder Ben Stokes to Mohammed Shami in the first over of the innings. Soon Manan Vohra, the other opener was sent back, leaving the Jaipur franchise at 25

for two in the fourth over. What followed though was an imperious show of batting from Samson as he clobbered seven sixes and 12 fours to take the game to the wire. He built a couple of half-century partnerships with Shivam Dube and Riyan Parag and one of 45 with Jos Buttler to keep his team in the match. Earlier, a 105-run partnership for the third wicket in just 46 balls between skipper K.L. Rahul (91 off

50 balls) and Deepak Hooda (64 off 28 balls) helped Punjab Kings post 221/6 in their 20 overs. Punjab Kings, who lost opener Mayank Agarwal early, saw Rahul and Chris Gayle add 67 for the second wicket with the West Indian batsman being the dominant partner as he gave his side the initiative. Gayle’s 28-ball 40 comprised two sixes and four fours as he became the first batsman to hit 350 sixes in

the history of Indian Premier League. Gayle’s dismissal off Riyan Parag would have given hope to the Rajasthan franchise but then Hooda and Rahul pounded sixes. O ve r s 1 3 a n d 1 4 bowled by Shivam Dube and Shreyas Gopal went for 20 each and saw six sixes, five of those coming of Hooda’s bat. From 110/2 in 12 overs, Punjab Kings moved to 150/2 in 14 overs. The hammering didn’t

end there. After a couple of overs that went for 11 each, Punjab Kings took 15 off Chetan Sakariya, who had got the early wicket of Mayank Agarwal. Even in the 18th over, when Rajasthan Royals got rid of Hooda and Nicholas Pooran, the Punjab franchise managed to get 14 runs. Then came 15 off Mustafizur Rahman’s fourth over, the innings’ 19th. Young Saurashtra leftarm pacer Sakariya got two wickets in his last over and conceded just five runs to finish as the most successful Rajasthan Royals bowler with three wickets for 31 runs in his four overs. Brief scores: Punjab Kings 221/6 in 20 overs (K.L. Rahul 91, C Gayle 40, D Hooda 64, C Sakariya 3/31, C Morris 2/40) vs Rajasthan Royals 217/7 in 20 overs (S Samson 119, R Parag 25, J Buttler 25, S Dube 23, Arshdeep 3/35) Tuesday’s match Kolkata Knight Riders Vs Mumbai Indians Time: 7:30 p.m.
