mapur-Kohima tri-junction, from Samziuram village gate towards Jalukie town. Earlier, the indefinite bandh was announced after the expiry of the ten-day ultimatum served by Civil Society Organisations of Peren district on March 31 on the state government, to nab the armed assailants responsible for the killing of three persons at Lamhainamdi village on March 22. The CSOs of Peren
district called for closure of all government offices under Peren district including movement of government vehicles and halt to all government-related activities in the district. Further, the CSOs demanded immediate termination of post commander of 9th IRB Coy. from active service , presently deployed at Lamhainamdi village,. Speaking to Nagaland Post, UZYF president R
John Zeliang, said that the 10-day ultimatum served on the government expired on April 10 after which the federation announced indefinite bandh to protest the government inability to nab those responsible for the March 22 incident. In response to the UZYF call for bandh, Zeliang said the DC Peren ordered closure of all government offices and restriction of government vehicular movement in Peren district on April 13. While monitoring the bandh on Wednesday, he said a government registered vehicle (Bolero) attached with ADC Jalukie was seen parked in the heart of Jalukie town. This infuriated the protestors and led to the vehicle being damaged and burned. It was reported that the officer (ADC) was not present during the incident but that only the driver was seen. It was also reported that the driver had parked the car and went for marketing.
NPF dismayed at pace of probe into March 22 incident Naga People’s Front (NPF) has expressed dismay at the pace of investigation into the March 22 “Lamhainamdi village incident” and strongly urged the special investigation team (SIT) to speed up the process so justice was delivered and normalcy restored at the earliest. NPF through its press bureau said it has been ascertained to a degree that the murders took place because
of the indifference and complacency of the government towards impending conflict brewing in the area prior to the commission of the crime including the reluctance and inability to act upon its own directives. NPF said that the failure of the state government to hasten the investigation has continued to disrupt the normal life of local citizens. Further, the opposition party attacked the govern-

RIIN consultative meet venue changed
NEW DELHI, APR 14 (PTI): Center on Wednesday cancelled the CBSE’s class 10 board exams and postponed its class 12 exams following an exponential surge in COVID-19 cases. This is the first time that the Central Board of Secondary Education has completely cancelled the board exams conducted by it. Last year, the exams were partially cancelled in the wake of riots in northeast Delhi and COVID-19 cases. The decision on Wednesday was taken at a high-level meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. A total of 21.5 lakh students had registered for class 10 and 12 CBSE exams. CBSE will review the situation on June 1 to decide
DIMAPUR, APR 14 (NPN): Principal secretary Home, Abhijit Sinha has informed that the venue for the consultative meeting on Register of Indigenous Inhabitants of Nagaland (RIIN), will now be held at the State banquet hall, chief minister’s residential complex, Kohima on April 16 at 10 a.m. DIMAPUR, APR 14 (NPN): Following the expiry of its ultimatum to the State government for promulgation of an ordinance to implement Register of Indigenous Inhabitants of Nagaland (RIIN) on March 31, Joint Committee Against Prevention of Illegal Immigrants (JCPI) said it had called for a consultative meeting with the apex tribal bodies of the State. In a letter to presidents of apex tribal bodies sent on April 9, JCPI convener Atomi Swu and secretary “I’m telling you, we’ll form Tia Longchar said they dethe government under sired to hold a consultative any circumstances.” meeting with them and their
ment’s “lackadaisical attitude” towards handling the case, saying instead of hammering out for solution, the situation was aggravating more. Meanwhile, NPF has appealed to the United Zeliangrong Youth Federation (UZYF) to restrain themselves from taking the law into their hand, adding that the party empathized with their situation and supported their demand for justice.
on the class 12 exam schedule while objective criteria will be decided for class 10 results. CICSE, which is the other prominent national board for school examinations, said it is reviewing the situation and will come up with a decision soon in this regard. Several principals and educationists hailed the decision while others demanded that the criteria be decided in consultation with stakeholders. Parents also expressed concerns about the delay in schedule saying either board exams should be cancelled for class 12 or a schedule should be announced soon to ease the students’ anxiety. A notice of at least 15 days will be given before the start of examinations.
Therefore, in order not to hamper the investigation process of the law enforcing agencies, the NPF has urged the UZYF to work zealously and maintain peace and tranquillity. NPF has reiterated its earlier stand that the state government law enforcing agencies should look into the case with utmost sincerity and book the perpetrators and deliver justice to the victims within a time frame period.

KOHIMA, APR 14 (NPN): Having witnessed its disastrous impact last year, Health & Family Welfare (H&FW) department is not keen on advocating another lockdown now in view of the second wave of COVID19 and instead plans to impose it, if necessary, only in pockets where COVID positive cases are detected and as per Government of India’s containment plan. Revealing this, an H&FW official informed Nagaland Post that the total lockdown imposed in 2020 had not been a good experience and hence the department would not vouch for it so that normal life was not disrupted in districts/ places/areas that did not have positive cases. However, irrespective of whether another lock-
down was imposed or not, the official emphasised on the need to follow COVIDappropriate behaviour to stop the virus from spreading. The official regretted that inappropriate COVID behaviours amongst citizens were leading to the second wave of COVID and stressed that the district task forces (DTFs) should effectively implement the orders issued by the government, cautioning that the State could not get complacent over the issue. Regarding the order for random testing directed to the DTFs, the official said that none of the districts had implemented it, barring Dimapur. He pointed out since DTFs were fully empowered, they should be bold enough to execute the SOPs and the directive (Cont’d on p-8)

Sealing, containment zones Dimapur police to strictly mapped in Kohima, Dimapur enforce COVID-19 SOPs
DIMAPUR, APR 14 (NPN): In view of the detection of COVID-19 positive cases at the Multi Purpose Hall B and Main Stadium within the IG Stadium Complex and DUDA Guest House, Kohima, deputy commissioner and chairman DTF, Kohima has declared these areas as ‘containment zone’. Entry or exit within the containment zone has been restricted in order to map the local transmission of the disease and stop the contagion from spreading. Residents within the containment zone will be
regularly monitored by medical team over phone or otherwise, till they recover and tests negative for Covid. The public and all concerned are advised to follow all safety precautions. JCPI reiterates stand on RIIN, to hold consultative meet general secretaries at the earliest and suggested either third or fourth Friday, i.e., April 16 or 23, as the dates. They mentioned that once the convenient date was decided, the venue could either be in Dimapur or Kohima. Clarifying that JCPI was above partisan politics and individual self-interests, Swu and Longchar said the committee’s service rendered towards Naga society was purely voluntary as the issues of Inner Line Permit (ILP), Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and RIIN for once united all indigenous Nagas of Nagaland. “In this crucial couple

immigrants and, sensing the danger, a wakeup call was needed. And in the last quarter of 2018, tribal apex bodies and civil society organisations (CSOs) came to a consensus to urge the State government to strengthen ILP and extend it to Dimapur. The letter stated that in order to pursue this objective, 28 tribal bodies and CSOs formed JCPI, which submitted a representation to chief secretary on August 18, 2018. The fruitful consultative meeting led to the formation of Abhishek Singh Committee on ILP, as there was a genuine fear and
apprehension of illegal Bangladeshi immigrants’ influx due to National Register of Citizens (NRC) exercise in Assam. As at almost the same time, Citizenship Amendment Bill (CAB) became a national issue having direct implications for the Northeastern States, JCPI representing Nagaland became a part of North East Forum for Indigenous People (NEFIP) to collectively strengthen the movement. The June 7, 2019 meeting then authorised JCPI not only to fulfil ILP implementation but also to pursue CAB issue. (Cont’d on p-8)

Political violence grips Tripura Tripura CM directs police to contain post-poll violence in tribal council areas
AGARTALA, APR 14 (PTI): Tripura Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb on Wednesday directed the police to contain post- poll violence in the tribal council areas of the state. The BJP has accused newly floated TIPRA led by royal scion Pradyot Kishore Deb Barman of letting loose a reign of terror on saffron party workers after sweeping the recently concluded elections to the 30-member Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC), which governs two-thirds of the state’s area and one-third of the population. “I have been worried after receiving news about incidents of post-poll violence in the tribal council areas after election results were announced on April 10. “I have directed the police to arrest culprits ir-
M’laya board class 12 exams as per schedule S hillong, A pr 1 4 (PTI): Meghalaya state board class 12 examinations will be held as per schedule with utmost precaution to prevent the spread of COVID-19, Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong said on Wednesday. He said the state government has directed the authorities concerned to ensure strict adherence to COVID-19 protocols. “The class 12 examinations of the Meghalaya state board will be held as per schedule but with utmost precautions to prevent the spread of COVID-19,” Tynsong told reporters after a review meeting here. The state government has urged parents not to panic allow students to appear for the examinations scheduled to begin on April 16, he said. He said the state government is waiting for an update of the review conducted by Additional Chief Secretary D P Wahlang, in charge of education, for holding class 10 examinations. Tynsong said anyone coming from outside the Northeast, including those returning from Kumbh Mela, has to produce COVID negative certificate to enter the state.

by the governor as per the state government’s advice. The ruling BJP came a distant second bagging only nine seats. BJP spokesperson Nabendu Bhattacharya alleged that at least 10 party members were injured and many others hospitalised
after coming under attack from TIPRA activists, who ransacked homes and businesses of the saffron party supporters and vandalised party offices. The chief minister said that the administration has made an assessment of the damages to the properties in the violence and will compensate the owners. “We cannot allow anyone to take the law into their hands. Culprits belonging to any party will be punished for their misdeeds,” Deb, who also holds the Home portfolio, said. He appealed to the people to maintain peace and prevent attempts made to breach the peace. “Violence should not continue in a civilised society and all law-abiding persons should firmly stand against it,” he said. Bhattacharya said that three BJP teams, one led by the
party’s Tripura West MP Pratima Bhowmik, visited different tribal council areas and appealed to the people to refrain from violence and restore peace. They visited vandalised party offices and listened to the people who complained that their properties were attacked and damaged, money looted and they were forced to flee their homes, he said. Director General of Police V S Yadav said that steps are being taken to restore peace in the areas. “We have registered suo motu cases and also received some complaints. Some people were arrested and a special team comprising CRPF and TSR (Tripura State Rifles) jawans deployed to prevent further untoward incidents. Section 144 CrPC has been imposed wherever it was needed,” he told reporters.

leading to granting of bail to the respondent is a possible view in the facts and circumstances of the case. “Therefore, we do not find any error in the approach of the learned court below while exercising discretionary jurisdiction and granting bail to the respondent,” the High Court said in its order on April 9. On October 1 last year, the Special NIA court had granted bail to Gogoi after submission of chargesheet by the investigating agency. “...unlawful act of any
other nature, including acts arson and violence aimed at creating civil disturbance and law and order problems, which may be punishable under the ordinary law, would not come within the purview of section 15(1) of the Act of 1967 unless it is committed with the requisite intention,” the HC order said. By ‘Act of 1967’, the bench referred to the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 1967. The High Court also noted that the bail order by the lower court was passed after submission of the chargesheet on June 26, 2020 and no formal charge has yet been framed against Gogoi. “The materials submitted along with the chargesheet are basically statements of the witnesses recorded under section 161 of the Cr.P.C. which obviously do not have any evidential value,” it added.

Will investigate Cooch Behar killings: Mamata Mathabhanga (WB), Apr 14 (PTI): West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday met family members of those killed in CISF firing during the fourth phase of assembly elections, assuring them of a probe that will track down and bring the culprits to book. Banerjee lamented that she could not meet the next of kin of the deceased earlier, owing to a 72-hour ban on entry of political leaders in Cooch Behar, where four people were gunned down by CISF personnel in “self defence”, on April 10. “Our inquiry will track everyone responsible for the cold-blooded killing and ensure they are punished as per law,” she said. Banerjee had last week said shortly after the incident that the state government will initiate a CID probe into the killings. The CM said she will also ensure justice for the family of Ananda Burman, an 18-year-old first-time voter who was shot dead outside a polling booth in the same district. all the deceased, including the widows and parents of the four killed in firing, and the grandfather and maternal uncle of Burman. “I will come again immediately after the elections are over (May 2). We will help you in every possible way,” she said. The chief minister also said a martyrs’ column will be built in memory of the five who lost their lives. Four people were killed Cooch Behar’s Sitalkuchi as central forces opened fire amid polling for the fourth phase allegedly after coming under attack from locals, who “attempted to snatch their rifles”, police had said. mission put in place restrictions, including extending the “silence period” from 48 hours to 72 hours, for the fifth phase of elections, and barred the entry of politicians in the district for the next 72 hours from April 10, to prevent any possible law and order flare-up. The killings had triggered a political storm in West Bengal, with Banerjee calling it a “genocide” while Union Home Minister Amit Shah warning her against engaging in “appeasement politics” over bodies. Shah also alleged that Banerjee’s advice to gheraeo central forces had instigated people to attack the CISF personnel, which led to incident.
BJP trying to destroy WB culture: Rahul Goalpokhor (West Ben g a l ) , A p r 1 4 (PTI): Congress leader Rahul Gandhi Wednesday termed BJP claims to build “Sonar Bangla” (golden Bengal) as a “mirage” and said the saffron party has nothing to offer except for hatred, violence and dividing people on the basis of language, religion, caste and creed. During his first rally in Bengal in this election season, Gandhi took a dig at Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and said his party would never align with the BJP and the RSS, unlike the TMC, which in the past had been an alliance partner of the saffron party-led NDA. “BJP wants to destroy Bengal’s culture, heritage and divide it. In Assam, they are doing the same thing; in Tamil Nadu, they are trying to do the same thing with their alliance partner AIADMK. “The BJP has nothing to offer except for hatred, violence and divisive politics,” he said. Mocking BJP’s slogan of building “Sonar Bangla”, Gandhi termed it as a “mirage and said they “sell the same dream in every state”.

with an intention that there is no more repetition of the Coochbehar incident,” a senior official at the CEO office in the state said. With the additional force of 200 companies reaching the state after the end of Assam election there are presently 1071 companies of central force in the state. “Apart from the 853 companies the rest of the 218 companies of forces will be mainly used for the guarding of the strong room and maintaining the law-and-order situation in
the non-polling areas,” the official added. The EC has also decided to deploy 932 CAPF companies in the sixth phase on April 22, when 43 assembly constituencies across four districts will vote. The EC has further directed deployment of 760 and 715 companies, respectively, during the seventh and eight phases. Phase 7 will see 36 assembly constituencies go to polls while voters in 35 seats will exercise their franchise in phase 8.

and English, but may be expanded in regional languages too. He clarified that the same would be headed by a journalist and would help put forth the views of all sec-
tions of the society that are currently not being shown. Kharge said the Constitution of India is good but Prime Minister Narendra Modi is trying to spread his own ideology. He said Babasaheb Ambedkar, a key architect of India’s constitution, fought for the rights of oppressed sections of the society and wanted every thought to be taken care of and heard, but what is happening today is just the opposite. “Modi ji is trying to scare journalists and leaders. Every minute there is a crime committed against the Dalits and oppressed sections in the country,” he
alleged. Kharge stated Ambedkar had said that one has to be knowledgeable and not remain ignorant and that is even more relevant today, when Prime Minister Modi is attacking the Constitution and constitutional institutions as part of a predetermined conspiracy. Sur jewala said the move will help break the shackles of slavery in the media and put an end to worshipping of one individual. The Congress has been accusing the mainstream media of not showing their views, alleging that the media sector is only showing the government picture.
New Delhi/London, Apr 14 (IANS): British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has decided to shorten his trip to New Delhi later this month in view of the severity of the second wave of the coronavirus pandemic in India. The visit, due on April 26, is significant for the UK as it is eyeing a new bilateral trade deal with India, following its exit from the European Union. India is the secondlargest investor in the UK, after the US. Post-Brexit, the UK is focused on the
Boris Johnson
Indo-Pacific region for its economy and security. Johnson had earlier indicated that apart from New Delhi, he wanted to visit Mumbai, Pune, Bengaluru and Chennai.
Official sources on Wednesday however said that Johnson is reducing the length of his trip to India. A spokesperson in London told media that the decision to shorten the visit was taken after due consultations with the Indian government. Incidentally, India has placed a temporary hold on all exports of the OxfordAstraZeneca coronavirus vaccine after the rise in Covid-19 infection cases at home. The suspension of exports is expected to affect supplies to around 190 countries including the UK.

Nagaland Post Vol. XXxI NO. 128 Dimapur, THURSDAY, APRIL 15, 2021
Too much for too little
A
fter inordinate delays, the much awaited RCC bridge over Dhansiri river, near the government circuit house at Dimapur, was finally opened to traffic after its inauguration by state chief minister Neiphiu Rio on April 13,2021. The bridge has been constructed at the spot where, earlier, the pre-Second World War old Bailey bridge, connecting Purana Bazar with Walford/Naga Arcade was dismantled. The new RCC bridge with a total span of 322 feet and 12 meters in overall with of superstructure and 7.5 meters in width carriage way, was constructed at a total cost of Rs. Rs1374.85(as per the revised estimate). The work started on November 18,2009 but was halted on December 10,2010 on account of not having obtained the No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH). Eventually, after getting the nod in May 2014 the work restarted. In October 2015, according to the department, the contractor asked for price escalation since the work had been delayed for around five years. The department ultimately acceded to the demand for escalation from Rs.981.36 lakhs or Rs. 9.81 crore to Rs.1374.85 lakhs or Rs.13.74 crore. The figure reveals that there has been an overall 140% price escalation over the original estimate. As per the terms of the contract agreement, construction work for the RCC bridge was to have been completed within 24 months but it has taken 11 years. Why developmental projects in Nagaland have been delayed and why original estimates multiply by at least 100 percent or more is also a sad reflection of mismanagement or in other words, inefficiency and corruption. The chief minister, in his inaugural speech, lamented that it has taken 11-long years to complete the bridge and implied that it reflected the syndrome of delay in completion of developmental works in the state especially the roads which resulted in deplorable conditions. The chief minister also highlighted the other factor that has been hindering early completion of works- land acquisition in the face of obstruction from landowners. The inordinate delays in completion of project has led to cost overruns and added huge burden on the budget. Nagaland is the second oldest state in the north east when it became the 16th state under the Indian Union in 1963. Other states like Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram and Arunachal Pradesh which became states after 1972 or ten years later, are way ahead in development. In the seventies, which saw significant development, despite the disturbed situation, the state’s bureaucracy exhibited remarkable grit and determination in steering the state to the path of meaningful progress. Presently, the bureaucracy has turned inwards and become self serving and lacking clear commitment and direction. Construction of infrastructure is needed for providing facilities to public and this can happen only if people also realise that they are obligated to facilitate progress by keeping the larger public interests over their own interests. It is only when basic infrastructures are established can Nagaland afford to plan an economic vision to link up with the government of India’s ‘Act East Policy.’ The state government has been trying to get investors from outside to do business in Nagaland but there were no takers. Having admitted the causes for development blockages, it is hoped the chief minister will apply the concerns for a review by a high power committee to correct the drift.
DailyDevotion Inner Invincibility Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me… —Matthew 11:29 “Whom the Lord loves He chastens…” (Hebrews 12:6). How petty our complaining is! Our Lord begins to bring us to the point where we can have fellowship with Him, only to hear us moan and groan, saying, “Oh Lord, just let me be like other people!” Jesus is asking us to get beside Him and take one end of the yoke, so that we can pull together. That’s why Jesus says to us, “My yoke is easy and My burden is light” (Matthew 11:30). Are you closely identified with the Lord Jesus like that? If so, you will thank God when you feel the pressure of His hand upon you. “…to those who have no might He increases strength” (Isaiah 40:29). God comes and takes us out of our emotionalism, and then our complaining turns into a hymn of praise. The only way to know the strength of God is to take the yoke of Jesus upon us and to learn from Him. “…the joy of the Lord is your strength” (Nehemiah 8:10). Where do the saints get their joy? If we did not know some Christians well, we might think from just observing them that they have no burdens at all to bear. But we must lift the veil from our eyes. The fact that the peace, light, and joy of God is in them is proof that a burden is there as well. The burden that God places on us squeezes the grapes in our lives and produces the wine, but most of us see only the wine and not the burden. No power on earth or in hell can conquer the Spirit of God living within the human spirit; it creates an inner invincibility. If your life is producing only a whine, instead of the wine, then ruthlessly kick it out. It is definitely a crime for a Christian to be weak in God’s strength.

Post-mortem
From pandemic to endemic: Life vs profit! A n invisible virus from somewhere made its entry into the world of humans continues its spree devastating the world. Evert aspect of human life is affected escalating fear and insecurity including those leaders who have been thinking as invincible. The mutant virus variants have erupted in countries spreading at supersonic speed. To counter the onslaught of Covid-19, companies that produce vaccines invested millions of dollars engaging in research across the world rolled out a number of brands, but to the surprise of everyone corona started to surge in dangerous ways than before. Death and infection rates touched its peak as compared to 2020. Coronavirus has never distinguished borders, nation-states and apparently went beyond caste, class, gender, religion and nationality. But, once the rolldown of vaccines began, we come across emergence of vaccine inequality. Stronger economies have funded huge money who in turn, ordered vaccines doses in millions. The two-third world unable do so because of their poor economic status. This equation has widened inequality escalating poverty and hunger. Over and above, Covid-19 has helped the dictators and totalitarians to consolidate their power. In times of Covid-19 leaders used it to amass more power and did whatever they wanted. Initially, countries like India under the leadership of PM Modi wanted to show to the world that he was not a vaccine nationalist, but as times passed by, the rich and powerful
countries went ahead in vaccinating majority of its populace, while countries like India have hardly covered. Further, two-third world needs millions of vaccines to cover the entire populace, but have hardly covered the first jab and so the Governments like India has stopped exporting vaccines to other countries sticking on to “Me and My People”. Vaccine nationalism is back. We live in a world of inequality and populism. Rich people in one-third and two-third worlds enjoy all privileges including vaccine jabs, while the poor will have to wait for years. Apparently, COVID-19 has furthered misery and hardships to alarming heights as it affected severely employment possibilities of the informal sectors, who constitute the majority of workforce. Coronavirus has decimated all aspects of life that lasted for one full year. Development of vaccines resurged the hopes of leaders and people. Nonetheless, the mutant variant of coronavirus has muted the confidence of scientist, leaders and people. It has raised a question: Would vaccine jabs prevent the attack of the mutant variants? Answer to this question is not on definitive lines, but keep raising many more questions. Nevertheless, the entire world is engaged in fighting coronavirus without knowing from where it originated and how many waves and variations it would take and when it could possibly be eradicated. A year passed by. On the 24th of March, 2020, PM Modi had announced nation-wide lockdown by
giving just few hours to the 1.4 billion people. Millions travelled across the country for livelihood with families, not knowing what to do had started their journeys back to their homes. Images that we see in the print and visual media testify moving testimonies. Totalitarians have taken decisions on their own without consulting the opposition and the stake holders. Total lockdown clamped in India by PM Modi without any discussion in the Parliament. These are strange times. The spike is on an upward trend. The curve s h ow s a l a r m i n g r i s e. Nowadays, the very word “COVID” annoys many. People are fed up to hear the words such as “lockdowns” and “shutdowns”. Majority of people do not want to take one more long shut down. However, those living in the so called “free society” in the West shall never accept anymore. They would not accept total lockdowns or partial lockdowns as they are couched with individual freedom of expression and movement. As the second wave surges and gaining its momentum no one knows what to do. We’re once again pushed into murky waters. Once again, COVID has infused anxiety by kindling serious concern as to whether there would be another lockdown. India is in the second spike and other countries such as UK, Brazil, USA, Italy, Germany and others are in the third wave. COVID cases keep spiking. The governments do not want to go for another lockdown, but puts the onus on the people to be cautious not to deviate from the mandatory
requirements. However, mutant variants are on its spree and the numbers of people who are going to be dead and get infected would be much greater. On the one hand, the Western governments known for liberal democracies keep invoking lockdowns by taking into account the mood of the people. During the initial period most of the Western countries went in their own ways challenging WHO safety norms. While on the other, PM Modi probably seemed to have taken the corona virus lightly and taking COVID impact at a minimal level in the initial period and thus acted as a dictator imposing total lockdown by offering just few hours to pack-off. It was a long and horrendous journey. The images that we have been seeing for the last one year enjoins flesh and blood. Fragile frames taking a long journey exhibits anxiety and insecurity. Mass exodus of people depicts the pain and hardships. Their future is at stake. And yet they live with hope with a belief that they have a future. These are the people who have made and created history. They are the subjects of history with resolve and resilience. The new corona variants could be lethal as experts say, but for those who without any security and safety in life have no other choice but being pushed to face all kinds of difficulties. The emergent virus is yet another life-threatening one. It is the poor and the laboring classes face all kinds of problems. Coronavirus, once a pandemic, now is an endemic. A deadly virus is
shaking the very foundation of human existence including all areas of human activities in life-threatening ways, particularly the working classes. They are the ones who contribute to the welfare of people immensely in varied ways by their hard labor, and so waves of coronavirus shall never deter their grit and confidence, despite their misery, insecurity, fear and hopelessness. Figures of the dead and infected are spiraling to millions. Governments across the world face the same challenges, but responding in different ways, and the outcomes have been different. Funerals were conducted in haste where the numbers who attend were small. It has been a year and when we think about it the year passed by was filled with anguish and despair. WHO did warn the countries to be ready for any eventualities, but there was no preparedness. Leaders of many countries undermined the virus and had taken the first wave for granted. India, too undermined the first wave. Many lives could have been saved if leaders listened to science and experts. Nations’ look to the leaders for guidance. As George Will rightly opines, “Voters don’t decide issues, they decide who will decide issues.” It is for those who voted are now forced to think: whether their leaders who they voted for have taken right decisions on issues such as COVID-19 or decisions are premised on favoritism accumulation of money and furthering of power and populism. As Stephen Covey points out that “Account-
ability breeds response-ability” which we hardly see from leaders. As COVID19 has taken hold of our activities, leaders in such dire straits sent messages that were contradictory and inconsistent. In the initial period and even now messaging from leaders are so confusing creating chaos. Decisions on issues ought to be taken with diligence and responsibility, but not to be based on furthering political ambitions. Billions of people across the world suffer because of immature decisions and inconsistent messages have been passed on to citizens by leaders who ignored science and expertise. History shall never forgive them. It is hoped that at the appropriate time there shall be a public inquiry on how the governments handled the pandemic. We will have to learn from history, failing which history will repeat, by then it will be late. Vaccines are out, but experts do not give guarantee of its efficacy. Many dubious theories are floating. Question that arise are: Are vaccines designed to end the pandemic or to turn into an endemic? Are vaccines developed by oligopolistic vaccine transnationals and monopolists primarily to maximize profits or to save human lives? Coronavirus is gradually becoming from pandemic to an endemic which means that like any other influenzas demand of these vaccines would continue and so it is going to yield greater returns. Like boosters for influenzas, we would be forced to take vaccines in the foreseeable future, as it is an endemic. Dr. John Mohan Razu
Why PDA is so edgy on RIIN?
I
nitially the PDA Government in Nagaland appeared to be determined to effectively enforce the Inner Line Permit (ILP) covering the District of Dimapur and to undertake the Register of Indigenous Inhabitants of Nagaland (RIIN). Subsequently, on 27th September, 2019, the State Govt. convened a Consultative Meeting at the State Banquet Hall, Old CM’s Bungalow, Kohima to which all the tribal bodies of Nagaland including the civil organizations were invited and all were present in that meeting. I too participated in the discussion. To my memory, barring one or two less relevant organizations, all the apex tribal organizations and mass-based organizations in Nagaland supported the Govt. to carry out RIIN. The PDA Govt. took the most essential and the right decision on RIIN in particular in June-July, 2019 in the best interest of the State of Nagaland. Accordingly, the State Govt. constituted the Commission on RIIN headed by Mrs. Banuo Z. Jamir, and the Commis-
W
sion had extensive consultations with all those whosoever mattered. Thus, as far as the ground work for assessing the opinion of the public on RIIN is concerned, the Commission on RIIN had sufficiently and successfully completed. Now, the Commission’s report has been in the possession of the State Govt. Therefore, it is indeed perplexing to watch how the State Govt. has reconvened the consultative meeting on 16.4.2021 with the tribal bodies for the second time on the same issue of RIIN for which they all gave their unstinted support to RIIN on 27th Sept., 2019. Since the concerned stakeholders had already extended their unreserved support to Govt. for conducting the RIIN exercise, the PDA Govt. is expected to proceed ahead without hesitation. We all know that RIIN is not without opposition particularly forces from outside the State of Nagaland like Naga Hoho or other unseen elements trying their best to sabotage the indispensable program. Nevertheless, the State Govt. is expected
to remain focused and be robust to undertake what is in the very interest of the indigenous inhabitants of Nagaland since the Statehood was created for those indigenous people in particular and not for those who are opposing the idea of RIIN. The hesitation of the State Govt. whips up the following few questions. 1. What factor or factors has/ have deterred the Govt. of Nagaland from its determination to carry out the program forthright? Who has imparted this wisdom to PDA Govt. to chew RIIN like cud? 2. Is the Govt. of Nagaland not aware that there have been two gravitational forces in Nagaland and each one tries to keep Nagaland under its control? I believe that the Govt. is not in dilemma as for whom it has to stand for. 3. The PDA Govt. is expected to disallow any other circumstances as fear phobia or appeasement to overshadow the importance of RIIN knowing well that today’s complacence will fetch tomorrow’s ruin.
4. Am I wrong to conclude that most of the authorities in Nagaland today, be it in Govt. or in NGO have high tendencies to become malleable and to turn oneself into the agent of the anti-Nagaland force. Are these authorities not aware that the anti-Nagaland forces are trying its best to dilute the protective laws of Nagaland? 5. Is the Govt. of Nagaland not aware of that the moment any of the protective laws of Nagaland is allowed to be relaxed, that becomes the basis for opening the floodgate to outsiders to invade Nagaland and in the process the indigenous inhabitants of Nagaland will ultimately be reduced to secondary citizens in their own land? Is the present day Govt. not interested at all to streamline and refurbish its protective systems in the greater interest of the indigenous inhabitants of Nagaland? 6. I hope the PDA Govt. does not use the April 16, 2021 as a ploy by which it draws inference from such meeting. In other words, is
Great men and evil age
e have come across on many stories of politicians and great men who had vanished and nobody remember them today. We have seen many once-great men; ministers of God–powerful mighty used preachers who refused to declare war on their sins. They lost everything, their families, their influence, their ministries and their self-respect, divorce and left alone the unloved children. In the evil age, a ripe field and a fear desire always invite us to answer “yes” but to something that may change us or may fall us at the lack of faith in the face of tremendous calling. Honestly, in desperation we are going to travel this road but once, are we convinced that we are making enough of our opportunities? Do we really believe that the character we have fashioned for ourselves is passing muster
in the sight of God? Are there any doubt, regrets, sudden age of shame, and a haunting sense of un-fulfillment during this adventure of life? Christians come from different family background and culture, have the different problems in the natural, psychological and spiritual areas. Many leaders and believers do not know that their Jericho is simply a decision for them to take victory over the devil- a decision to surrender to God. Today, we have fallen evangelists, playboys, mistresses and frustrated politicians who want front seats and also want to enjoy the cocktail parties in the night clubs. Amongst us, there are many immatured and second hand politicians–boasts of winning every election they contest. These people are admired as boys, they hobbling around with
a cane as they were robbed of joy, peace, rest and God’s favour. Their Jericho should come down as their endeavor was not a genuine change in the hearts of the people. It was simply the preacher’s pride, full of good works and appearance but not accompanied by true repentance. Everyone will hesitate in trying to do something that will put our lives and normal way of life in danger. We look around and see only the value in limitations in life-what we cannot do, never could do, one scared to do. In our relationships in our use of gifts and skills God has given us, and in our whole approach to life, sometimes we end up saying ‘no’ to an invitation to something greater because we are afraid we will lose what little we have. Keduovilie Linyü, Lower D. Block, Kohima
the State Govt. trying to inflict its undue influence on the invitees whereby such decision is adopted to dump the RIIN in cold storage in the better interest of the opponent and the Govt. shifts the inevitable consequences to the invitees? Well, should there be anyone who may like to propose the implementation of RIIN without cut-off year or relaxing the cut-off year is nothing less than backstabbing. Such proposal of having RIIN without 1.12.1963 as the cut-off year is similar to that of a house constructed without a single door or a high security wall erected without a gate. The RIIN without cut off year is a toothless tiger and it is a mockery in itself. Under any circumstances the State of Nagaland has to survive, and if so, its special laws are to be guarded from dilution and destruction. Be it any authority under the State Govt. or in NGO, whoever is responsible for emasculating any of those legal provisions will definitely go into the annals of Nagaland’s history. Z. Lohe
Reader’s Post
Are we waiting for tragedy to strike? Sir,
Despite the country hitting record high of COVID positive cases on a daily basis, the authorities in the state are yet to come out with any concrete strategy to tackle any kind of eventuality. The State may be well prepared, but as confidence measure the authorities concern need to constantly remind the public (through media) the action plans that are in place. Human memory is short and people need to be reminded, especially in situation like this. Most importantly, the class X and XII and some university exams are underway. When the government itself is stressing on to avoid the 3 Cs-- (closed spaces, crowded places, and close-contact settings), it is still going ahead with the exams. The Central government has already cancelled the CBSE’s class 10 board exams and postponed the class 12 taking note of the surge in cases. Some schools in Dimapur (lower class) have already shut. We cannot wait for tragedy to strike and then only react. If CBSE can cancel and postpone exams, why can’t the State board and university follow suit. The current Covid variants have been found to be more deadly and faster to spread, affecting mostly the younger generation. It is a humble appeal to the State government authorities to kindly take note of the present situation and make things clear in the public domain. Kumbh Mela: over 1,000 Covid cases in 48 hrs HARIDWAR, APR 14 (AGENCIES): Hundreds of people have tested positive for coronavirus in India at the site of the world’s biggest religious festival, officials said Wednesday, as huge crowds of mostly maskless Hindu devotees descended on the River Ganges, reports Hindustan Times. The virus was detected in more than 1,000 people in just 48 hours in the city of Haridwar, which lies along the holy river where the Kumbh Mela is being observed, officials said. A new wave of coronavirus infections is sweeping across India, with experts blaming massive religious events, packed political rallies in poll-bound states and crowded public places. The government on Wednesday postponed high school exams for 15 to 18-year-olds, which were to be held in May-June, amid the resurgence of the virus. Despite rising virus cases, pilgrims have gathered in huge numbers to take part in the holy celebration.

Modi prioritising WB polls over people’s lives: Maha Congress
Nana Patole
Mumbai, Apr 14 (PTI): Maharashtra Congress chief Nana Patole on Wednesday alleged that Prime Minister Narendra Modi will announce a national lockdown only after the elections in West Bengal are over, as he is prioritising polls over people’s lives. Speaking to reporters, Patole said national reports have indicated that the coronavirus infection is spreading at a high speed across the country, but the Prime Minister is busy holding rallies. Prime Minister Modi will announce a national lockdown only after the
elections in West Bengal are over, he claimed. “Between April 1 and 10, coronavirus spread rapidly across the nation. However, the Prime Minister is holding large rallies without wearing a mask. He is happily campaigning in West Bengal, but people who are suffering are ignored by his government. What message is Modi sending by not wearing a mask at rallies?” Patole said. Reacting to Leader of Opposition Devendra Fadnavis’ allegations regarding the MVA government’s relief package, Patole accused the BJP leader of unnecessarily playing politics over the state government’s measures. “If Fadnavis really has some clout in Delhi, he should ensure that Maharashtra gets its due worth Rs 90,000 crore of GST and other schemes,” the Congress leader said.
Covid-19. India overtook Brazil this week to become the country with the secondhighest number of Covid-19 cases in the world. The vast nation of 1.3 billion people on Wednesday reported more than 184,000 infections in the past 24 hours -- the biggest single-day rise since the start of the pandemic -- to take the total to almost 13.9 million cases. India’s daily death toll passed 1,000 on Wednesday for the first time since mid-October. Local authorities have imposed night curfews and clamped down on movement and activities. In India’s financial capital Mumbai, where the Maharashtra state government has imposed tougher lockdown measures, migrant workers at a train station said they were leaving for their homes in other states after the tighter restrictions were announced. “Since I don’t have any work, I am not able to pay my rent,” migrant worker Imraan Khan told AFP.

Cancel Class 12 CBSE exams: Priyanka
Lu c k n ow, A pr 1 4 (PTI): Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Wednesday said he has tested positive for COVID19. He had isolated himself even before the test results on Tuesday after some officials in his contact tested positive for coronavirus. “After initial symptoms, I got myself tested. My report is positive. I am in self-isolation and following doctors advice. I am doing all the works virtually,” Adityanath tweeted from his official Twitter handle. “All the activities of the government are running normally. Those who came in my contact should undergo testing and take precautions,” the chief minister said.
New Delhi, Apr 14 (PTI): Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Wednesday said CBSE board exams must be cancelled for Class 12 as has been done for Class 10 and asserted that keeping the students “under pressure” till June is “unfair”. Her remarks came soon after the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) announced that exams for Class 10 have been cancelled and those for Class 12 have been postponed in view of the surge in COVID-19 cases in the country. The exams were scheduled to be held from May 4. “The Class 12 exams have been postponed

To resolve the issue of long queues, the Vadodara Municipal Corporation recently installed 35 new metal pyres in crematoriums to accommodate more bodies, the civic body’s standing committee head Hitendra Patel said. “Earlier, we had permitted four crematoriums in Vadodara city to handle bodies of COVID-19 patients. Now, looking at the rush, we allowed another eight crematoriums two days back,” he said. Patel said in seven crematoriums, where there has been a huge rush, they have installed 35 additional metal pyres, on which bodies are placed along with wooden logs.

In Ahmedabad city, relatives of some of the deceased claimed they had to wait for over eight hours for cremation. Huge rush was seen at Vadaj and Dudheshwar crematoriums, two of the major facilities here, in the last couple of days. A person, who had to stand in a queue on Tuesday to attend the last rites of a relative at the Vadaj facility, told reporters that seven bodies were brought to the crematorium between 8 am and noon. “All had to wait for their turn,” he said, adding that though he arrived early in the morning for the cremation of his relative, their turn came in the evening. Ahmedabad, Apr 14 (PTI): Relatives of COVID19 victims as well as those who died of other ailments are forced to wait for hours for performing the last rites as many crematoriums in Gujarat are witnessing a huge rush since the last one week. Though Hindus generally do not cremate the dead after sunset, many of them are left with no option but to perform the last rites of the deceased at night in view of the rush of bodies at various crematoriums, officials said on Thursday. Two days back, around 25 bodies were cremated simultaneously on wood pyres at night in a crematorium in Umra area of Surat city. In Vadodara also, people were forced to cremate the deceased during night due to the huge rush at some crematoriums, Vadodara Municipal Corporation’s standing committee chairman Hitendra Patel told PTI. to increase the testing capacity in the State, the department has proposed amendment in clause 14 (a), (b), (c) and (d), wherein COVID-19 testing should be done only by test kits in health facilities approved by the government, while all guidelines regarding registration, testing and reporting should be strictly adhered to and all approved hospitals/laboratories should not charge beyond the governmentapproved rates for testing. And in clause (d), it has been proposed that any contravention or non-compliance to the above mentioned sub-clauses should be made punishable as per provision of the Epidemic Disease Act, 1897. The department has insisted that all inbound travellers to the State should follow the standing SOP upon arrival issued by the State government, which include registration, testing, quarantine and observance of COVID-19 appropriate behaviours. The government is yet to take a call on the proposal submitted by the department.

Meanwhile, with the second wave of COVID pandemic affecting many parts of the country currently and rising COVID positive cases in the State, the H&FW department has suggested extension of the Nagaland Epidemic Disease (COVID 19) Regulation, 2020 for another year. The State government had on March 18, 2020 enforced the Epidemic Diseases Act, 1897 for a period of one year. However, in view of the current situation, the department has suggested amendment to the Act. Further, considering the uncontrolled spread of fake information on COVID creating havoc in the society, the department has proposed amendment in clause 13 of the Epidemic Diseases Act wherein any person/institution/organisation found circulating rumours or unauthenticated information relating COVID through any print or electronic media should be made liable for punishment as per provision of the Act. The meeting also passed a resolution that made all presidents and general secretaries of Naga tribal apex bodies as exofficio executive members of JCPI by virtue of their designation. Following the RIIN notification issued on June 29, 2019, the letter recalled that an emergency meeting of all Naga tribal apex bodies and CSOs was called on July 5, 2019 under the banner JCPI where it was decided that all tribal apex bodies in their respective districts would submit recommendations to Government of India. Due to its complexities and as a thorough research was required, JCPI was entrusted to distinguish the indigenous status of citizens in Dimapur.
Further, the letter reminded the presidents that it was decided that only December 1, 1963 cut-off year would be the yardstick for identifying the indigenous inhabitant of the State. This, JCPI had also cited the April 28, 1977 notification issued by P&AR department joint secretary A. Shanmugam. Unfortunately, JCPI said the notification of December 9, 2019 that extended ILP to Dimapur mentioned November 21, 1979 as the cut-out year for the issue of ILP, which it asserted was totally unacceptable and was against the interest of indigenous people of the State. The letter stated that there was a notification maintaining December 1, 1963 as cut-off date and years for both ILP and RIIN.

Biden to withdraw US troops from Afghanistan Pak decides to ban radical Islamist party
ban vowed to cut ties with al-Qaeda and other terrorist groups and enter into intraAfghan peace talks. Since the signing of the deal, there have been no attacks on the foreign forces in the country. However, the Taliban has intensified attacks against the internationally-backed Afghan government. Biden said recently that his administration is unlikely to meet the fast-approaching May deadline, while also making it clear that he wants US troops out of the country.
The US invaded Afghanistan following the September 11, 2001 attacks and overthrew the Taliban regime. It is the longest war Washington has ever waged. Biden said that accelerating the pace of peace negotiations under way among the warring Afghan parties would be key to pulling out troops. Since last September, the Taliban have been holding peace negotiations with representatives of the Afghan government in Qatar but progress has stalled.
China-India border tensions ‘remain high’: US Intel Report WASHINGTON, APR 14 (PTI): China-India border tensions “remain high” despite some force pullbacks this year, the US intelligence community has told Congress, asserting that Beijing seeks to use coordinated, wholeof-government tools to demonstrate its growing strength and compel regional neighbours to acquiesce to its preferences, including its claims over disputed territory. The Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI) said in its latest annual threat assessment report to the US Congress that Beijing will continue to promote the multi-billion-dollar Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) to expand its economic, political and military presence abroad, while trying to reduce waste and ex-
SL bans ISIS, al-Qaeda and 9 other terror groups C O LO M B O, A P R 1 4 (PTI): Sri Lanka has banned 11 hardline Islamist organisations, including the Islamic State (ISIS) and al-Qaeda, for their links to extremist activities in the country and warned that any person who conspires with them would be sentenced to prison terms between 20 and 10 years, according to an official announcement. President Gotabaya Rajapaksa in a special gazette notification issued on Tuesday proscribed the radical groups under the Prevention of Terrorism (temporary) Provisions Act. The notification specifies that any person who acts in contravention or conspires to act would be sentenced to prison terms between 10 to 20 years. The Government of Sri Lanka proscribed the 11 extremist organisations “in good faith for the purpose of ensuring the continuance of peace within the country and in the interest of national security, public order, and the rule of law,” the notification stated. Obtaining membership, dealing with their members, promoting such organisations, providing refuge for members, donating money or material, or engaging in any transaction are prohibited. Anyone violating these regulations could face up to 10 to 20 years in prison, Colombo Page said in a report. Among the banned organisations are local Muslim groups, including the Sri Lanka Islamic Students Movement.
ploitative practices, which have led to international criticism. The BRI is a multibillion-dollar initiative launched by Chinese President Xi Jinping when he came into power in 2013. It aims to link Southeast Asia, Central Asia, the Gulf region, Africa and Europe with a network of land and sea routes. “China-India border tensions remain high, despite some force pullbacks this year. China’s occupation since May 2020 of contested border areas is the most serious escalation in decades and led to the first lethal border clash between the two countries since 1975,” the report said. “As of mid-February, after multiple rounds of talks, both sides were pulling back forces and equip-
ment from some sites along the disputed border,” it said. The border standoff between the armies of India and China erupted on May 5 last following a violent clash in the Pangong Lake areas and both sides gradually enhanced their deployment by rushing in tens of thousands of soldiers as well as heavy weaponry. As a result of a series of military and diplomatic talks, the two sides completed withdrawal of troops and weapons from the North and South banks of Pangong lake in February in line with an agreement on disengagement. India has been insisting that a resolution of outstanding issues including in Depsang, Hot Springs and Gogra is essential for overall ties between the two countries.
and then adopts the stance whatsoever is decided in the result of the consultation,” Naeem added. If it does go ahead, the planned conference will be the third international meeting on the peace process, following talks in Moscow and Dushanbe in recent weeks. The Afghanistan decision is one of the most delicate that Biden has had to make in his young administration. Observers fear that if international troops withdraw without a political solution, Afghanistan could enter a new civil war. According to official information, there are currently around 2,500 US soldiers in Afghanistan. At its peak 10 years ago, the number was around 100,000. Most recently, including the US troops, a total of around 10,000 soldiers from NATO countries and partner nations were in Afghanistan to support the democratically elected government by training and advising security forces.

ISLAMABAD/LAHORE, APR 14 (PTI): Pakistan on Wednesday decided to ban a radical Islamist party under the Terrorism Act after its supporters clashed with the law enforcement agencies for the third consecutive day, leaving seven persons dead and over 300 policemen injured. Interior Minister Sheikh Rashid Ahmed told the media that the Tehreeki-Labaik Pakistan (TLP) was being banned under the Rule 11-B of Anti-Terrorism Act of 1997. “I have approved a pro-
posal sent by the government of Punjab to ban the TLP,” he said. “We have also warned those who are funding the TLP.” Ahmed said that at least two police officials were killed and 340 others injured in clashes with the protestors during the last two days. The TLP had launched the country-wide protest on Monday after the arrest of its chief Saad Hussain Rizvi ahead of April 20 deadline the Islamists had given to the Imran Khan government demanding expulsion of the French ambassador for publication of cartoons of the Prophet. The TLP, which bagged 2.5 million votes in the 2018 general elections, blocked the roads across the country following the arrest of Saad Rizvi, son of Khadim Hussain Rizvi who died a few months ago. A US-initiated international conference on Afghanistan is set to begin in Istanbul on April 24, according to the Turkish Foreign Ministry. The aim of the high-level meeting is to complement the talks happening in Doha and get the peace process on a faster track. The Taliban have yet to formally say if they will even participate. A spokesman Tuesday said the Taliban will not take part in a planned peace conference for Afghanistan until all international troops have withdrawn from the country completely. “Until all foreign forces completely withdraw from our homeland, the Islamic Emirate will not participate in any conference that shall make decisions about Afghanistan,” Mohammed Naeem, spokesman of the Taliban’s political office in Doha, tweeted on Tuesday. “The IEA performs its works with consultations according to the guidance of the noble religion of Islam

WASHINGTON, APR 14 (IANS): US President Joe Biden wants to withdraw American troops from Afghanistan by September 11, the 20th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, a senior administration official has said. Biden has been facing mounting pressure to make a decision on the deployment of troops in Afghanistan, where the US has had a sustained military presence for the past 19 years. He will formally announce his decision in a speech at the White House o n We d n e s d ay, W h i t e House spokesperson Jen Psaki said on Tuesday, DPA news agency reported. The senior administration official earlier briefed reporters on the plan, remaining anonymous under rules set by the White House. Former president Donald Trump struck a deal with the Taliban last year, agreeing to withdraw all US and international troops from Afghanistan by May 1. In return, the Tali-

Physicists discover ultra-rare ‘triple glueball’ particle Music video ‘Asheshina Wuvelo’ released
A
never-before-seen particle has revealed itself in the hot guts of two particle colliders, confirming a half-centuryold theory. Scientists predicted the existence of the particle, known as the odderon, in 1973, describing it as a rare, short-lived conjointment of three smaller particles known as gluons. Since then, researchers have suspected that the odderon might appear when protons slammed together at extreme speeds, but the precise conditions that would make it spring into existence remained a mystery. Now, after comparing data from the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), the 17-mile-long (27 kilometers) ring-shaped atom smasher near Geneva that’s famous for discovering the Higgs boson, and the Tevatron, a now-defunct 3.9-mile-long (6.3 km) American collider that slammed protons and their antimatter twins (antiprotons) together in Illinois until 2011, researchers report conclusive evidence of the odderon’s existence. Finding the odderon After those particle collisions, the scientists watched to see what happened. They theorized that

odderons would appear at slightly different rates in proton-proton collisions and proton-antiproton collisions. This difference would reveal itself in a slight mismatch between the frequencies of protons bouncing off other protons and the frequencies of protons bouncing off antiprotons.
The LHC and Tevatron collisions happened at different energy levels. But the researchers behind this new paper developed a mathematical approach to compare their data. And it produced this graph, which they called the “money plot”. A graph shows two
Processed meats, sugary drinks linked to gut inflammation
L
ove to eat processed meats, french fries, mayonnaise and drink alcohol and soft drinks? Regular intake of these foods can boost gut inflammation, and increase the risk of conditions ranging from diabetes, arthritis and heart disease, among others, finds research. The findings showed that intake of processed foods and animalderived foods are associated with a higher relative volume of ‘opportunistic’ bacterial species, including
certain bacteria belonging to Firmicutes and Ruminococcus sp, all involved in proinflammatory activities. Eating plant-based foods such as nuts, fruit, vegetables, cereals, and oily fish and red wine was linked to a higher abundance of Faecalibacterium sp, which produce short chain fatty acids that help control inflammation and protect the integrity of the cells lining the gut. Similarly, intake of coffee was also associated with
a higher relative abundance of Oscillibacter sp, while fermented dairy products, such as buttermilk and yoghurt were strongly associated with anti-inflammatory bacteria, such as Bifidobacterium, Lactobacillus, and Enterococcus sp. Food clusters of breads; legumes, such as lentils, peas, and chickpeas; fish; and nuts were consistently associated with a lower relative abundance of ‘opportunistic’ bacteria and pro-inflammatory activity. But a fast food cluster of meats, french fries, mayonnaise and soft drinks was associated with a cluster of ‘unfriendly’ Clostridium bolteae, Coprobacillus and Lachnospiraceae bacteria. In the absence of fibre, these bacteria turn to the mucus layer of the gut to feed off, leading to an erosion of the integrity of the gut, the researchers said, in the study published in the journal BMJ. similar lines that don’t follow the exact same path. The difference between these two lines is due to the existence of the odderon. The blue line, representing proton-antiproton collisions, doesn’t line up perfectly with the red line, which represents protonproton collisions. That difference is the telltale sign of the odderon — demonstrated with 5 sigma statistical significance, meaning that the odds of an effect like this randomly emerging without odderons involved would be 1 in 3.5 million. Why proton collisions create odderons Protons aren’t fundamental, indivisible particles. Rather, they’re constructed of three quarks and many gluons. Those quarks are the heavy hitters of the subatomic world, relatively bulky and responsible for make up the mass of protons and neutrons and electromagnetic charge. But the gluons play just as important a role: They carry the strong force, one of the four fundamental forces of the universe, responsible for “gluing” quarks together into protons and neutrons, and then binding those protons and neutrons together
Sony invests $200 million in Epic Games
S
ony has just invested another $200 million in Epic Games as part of a $1 billion funding round, Epic announced today. Over a dozen investors contributed toward the funding round, which valued the Fortnite developer at $28.7 billion. That’s over $10 billion more than Epic Games’ estimated value at the time of Sony’s major investment last July. Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney is still the company’s controlling shareholder after the investment. In a press release, Sweeney said that Epic will use the investment to “help accelerate our work around building connected social experiences in Fortnite, Rocket League and Fall Guys, while empowering game developers and creators with Unreal Engine, Epic Online Services and the Epic Games Store.” The funding round comes less than a year after Sony’s $250 million investment in Epic. inside atomic nuclei. When protons collide at super high energies inside particle colliders like the LHC, they shatter into pieces about 75% of the time. The remaining 25% of the time, they bounce off one another like pool balls on a billiards table. In this instance, a process called elastic scattering — the protons survive the encounter. And physicists think that is possible because the protons exchange either two or three gluons. At the brief point of contact, that set of gluons travels from the interior of one proton to the interior of the other. It’s important that both protons-proton collisions and proton-anti-proton collisions exchange particles, because it’s in the subtle difference between those two types of exchanges that the odderon was revealed. Occasionally, a quasi state called a glueball, a pair or trio of gluons emerges during a collision. Scientists had already confirmed the existence of the double glueball, but this is the first time they’ve observed with confidence the triple glueball called the odderon, the one that in 1973 was predicted to exist. UCL: PSG oust Bayern; Chelsea through
PSG’s Kylian Mbappe dribbles the ball during the Champions League match against Bayern Munich. BERLIN, APR 14 (IANS): Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) lost 1-0 at home against Bayern Munich on Tuesday but still dumped the title holders out of the Champions League quarter-finals on away goals from a 3-3 aggregate. Former PSG player Eric Maxim ChoupoMoting headed home for Bayern in the 40th minute which wasn’t enough as the Germans had lost 3-2 at home a week ago, DPA reports. Man of the match Neymar was denied twice by the woodwork as PSG
reached the semis a third time to keep alive the dream of a first-ever Champions League title for the ambitious Qatari-owned club. “I am very happy. We eliminated the European champion, a great team,” Neymar told RMC Sport. PSG are a great team. Now we are in the semi-finals and we dream bigger.” The tie was a rematch of last year’s final which Bayern had won 1-0. Chelsea meanwhile reached the last four for the first time since 2014, losing 1-0 against Porto from Mehdi Taremi’s late bicycle
kick but going through 2-1 overall. Chelsea next play record winners Real Madrid or compatriots Liverpool, who meet Wednesday at Anfield with Real 3-1 up. PSG will be up against Manchester City or Borussia Dortmund, with Pep Guardiola’s City taking a slender 2-1 lead to Germany. “We weren’t eliminated tonight, the result in Munich needed to be better. That was frustrating because we missed so many chances,” Munich captain Manuel Neuer told
Sky TV after their exit. “We’re on our last legs - it’s tough against such a top side, but the players gave everything on the pitch.” B aye r n we r e s t i l l without injured star striker Robert Lewandowski and coronavirus-infected Serge Gnabry, and midfielder Leon Goretzka was also not fit to play in their 100th Champions League knockout match while PSG’s list of absentees included captain Marquinhos owing to a groin problem. PSG did not sit back as Neuer saved from Neymar
in a goalmouth scramble before the Brazilian was denied by the crossbar and the post. Bayern’s 40th minute lead came out of the blue. David Alaba had a short-range shot saved well by Keylor Navas but Lewandowski’s replacement Choupo-Moting headed into the net on the rebound. After the break Alaba aimed wide as Bayern went in search of the second goal they needed and Navas denied Thomas Mueller. PSG started lurking for the counter as substitute Moise Kean fired high and Mbappe was ruled just offside after smashing high into the net but it didn’t matter in the end. Both matches between Porto and Chelsea were played in Seville owing to coronavirus travel restrictions, and Porto aimed to try and overturn their twogoal deficit in what was Chelsea’s home leg. Taremi’s spectacular goal in stoppage time came too late to deny Chelsea whose new manager Thomas Tuchel reached the last four the second straight year, having been in charge of PSG last year. “We accepted what was needed was a tough, tough fight,” Tuchel told BT Sport. “Overall we deserved to beat Porto. It was a tough 180 minutes.”
IOA expects a rich medal haul at Tokyo Olympics
NEW DELHI, APR 14 (IANS): The new wave of Covid-19 has forced Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) to shut Olympic preparatory camps at the Sports Authority of India (SAI) training centres in Sonepat and Lucknow. The decision comes just 100 days before the start of Tokyo Olympics. Six Indian wrestlers, including three in men’s freestyle, have made cut for the Tokyo Olympics starting July 23. The WFI is expecting more wrestlers to achieve the Olympic qualification berth at next month’s World Olympic qualifiers in Sofia, Belgrade. S a n j ay S a r a swa t , SAI’s regional head in Lucknow, communicated to WFI on Tuesday that the men’s camp in Sonepat and women’s camp in Lucknow will be shut with immediate effect till further orders. “Two coaches associated with wrestling have tested positive for coronavirus in Lucknow and are home quarantined. The wrestling arena has also been disinfected,” SAI’s regional head informed WFI. Confirming the development, a WFI official said the camp could be closed for a week or more depending on the prevailing situation. For the Olympic preparatory camp, WFI has selected four leading wrestlers in each of the weight groups. K Y M C

RCB beat SRH by 6 runs in IPL
CHENNAI, APR 14 (PTI): Left-arm spinner Shahbaz Ahmed (3/7) dished out a match-winning performance after Glenn Maxwell’s halfcentury to help Royal Challengers Bangalore notch up a six-run win over Sunrisers Hyderabad in the Indian Premier League here on Wednesday. Put in to bat, RCB managed 149 for eight on the back of Maxwell’s 41-ball 59 before Shahbaz changed the complexion of the match by dismissing Manish Pandey (38), Jonny Bairstow (12) and Abdul Samad (0) in one over, as SRH ended at 143 for nine in the stipulated 20 overs. The victory propelled RCB to the top of the table. Chasing a modest total, SRH lost opener Wriddhiman Saha (1) cheaply in the beginning of the third over. However, skipper David Warner (54) and Pandey looked to make short work of the chase, galloping towards the target with the Sunrisers needing 73 off the last 10 overs. The duo looked in ominous touch, smashing boundaries every over to keep the score board ticking until the 14the over when the Australian, who

hit seven fours and a six, was dismissed off a Kyle Jamieson off-cutter. RCB gained confidence after Warner’s dismissal, their bowlers limiting the boundaries. With the pressure mounting, Bairstow, Pandey and Samad tried to target Shahbaz but mistimed their shots to return to the pavilion in the 17th over. Vijay Shankar (3) and Jason Holder (4) too struggled. Rashid Khan injected some hope in the SRH camp smashing 18 off nine balls before he was run out. Earlier, SRH bowlers, led by West Indian all-round-
er Jason Holder (3/30) and star spinner Rashid Khan (2/18), put up superlative show and picked up wickets at regular intervals. For RCB, Maxwell was the top scorer, hitting five fours and three maximums with skipper Virat Kohli (33) Shahbaz Ahmed (14) and Kyle Jamieson (12) providing valuable contributions. Put in to bat, RCB were off to a decent start with Kohli and opener Devdutt Padikkal (11) hitting a few boundaries. However, Sunrisers didn’t have to wait long for their first breakthrough as a back of the
the RCB skipper as wickets continued to fall at regular intervals. With AB de Villiers (1) in the middle, SRH captain David Warner introduced spin once again, bringing on versatile leg-spinner Rashid, and the move immediately paid dividends. The dangerous South African slapped the ball straight to Warner at covers with the slow nature of the Chepauk track coming to the fore once again. The Afghan spinner struck once again, getting rid of Washinton Sundar (8). With Dan Christian also gone, Maxwell smashed three fours and a maximum in the last three overs. Former champions SRH lost their opening match to Kolkata Knight Riders while RCB beat Mumbai Indians in the tournament opener. Brief scores: Royal Challengers B’lore: 149/8 in 20 overs (Glenn Maxwell 59; Rashid Khan 2/18, Jason Holder 3/30). Sunrisers Hyderabad: 143/9 in 20 overs (David Warner 54, Manish Pandey 38; Shahbaz Ahmed 3/7).
length delivery in the third over by Bhuvneshwar Kumar (1/30) spelled the end of Padikkal, who had returned after recovering from COVID-19. Shahbaz was the next to depart after playing a quick cameo, leaving RCB at 47 for two. At the halfway mark, Maxwell raised the tempo as the big-hitting Australian smashed Shahbaz Nadeem (1/36) for two sixes and a four in the first three balls of the 11th over, with Kohli joining the party with a Thursday’s match boundary. The two stitched Rajasthan Royals Vs Delhi Capitals a 44-run partnership before Time: 7:30 p.m. Jason Holder got rid of

Dustin Poirier and Conor McGregor
LAS VEGAS, APR 14 (AGENCIES): UFC president Dana White has said Conor McGregor and Dustin Poirier will headline UFC 264 in front of capacity crowd in Las Vegas, two days after the Irishman said the fight was off. The trilogy bout at T Mobile Arena on 10 July will be open to 20,000 spectators.
On M o n d ay, McGregor told Poirier the fight was “off ” in an expletive-laden Twitter exchange. The 32-year-old Irish fighter is now promoting ticket sales for the event. The social media spat between the two fighters, which put their latest meeting in doubt, started when Poirier responded
to an Instagram post from McGregor, in which the Irishman predicted he would win the bout in the fourth round. McGregor went on to says he would “fight someone else on the 10th”. Poirier won their rematch by technical knockout in round two at UFC 257 in January. The contest in Abu Dhabi was noted for its amicable build-up, during which McGregor was decidedly less confrontational than he had been before previous high-profile fights. The former twoweight world champion has not won a UFC contest since January 2020 and came out of retirement to face Poirier again after winning the first meeting in September 2014. White said he is “so happy” that “Las Vegas is back open for business” and that UFC 264 will be allowed to be staged in front of a “100% capacity” crowd. Like many spor ts world wide, UFC has been affected by the coronavirus pandemic over the past 12 months with postponements and events going ahead without crowds.

ate theme at a time when there are internal divisions among the Nagas. He urged upon the student leaders present that it was the time to look at things from a better perspective, change their ideas, bring something that fits their feet and advocate inclusiveness amongst all Nagas. Maintaining that all colours of balloons when filled with the same air, would soar up high, he requested the gathering that it was time for Nagas to change from the inside. “It
is not the colour of the balloon that makes it soar up towards the sky, it is the air that is inside that matters”, he stated. He lamented that if Nagas continued to live as the way we are today, Nagas would never rise. Ruangmei further added that the present Naga generation need to advocate for better tomorrow, adding that the problem that Nagas are facing today was because of the short-sighted solution of yesterday, where present Nagas generation is cleaning the dirt today. He asserted that it was
high time for Nagas to think about where and how Nagas would be in ten yearstime. Fur ther delivering solidarity message, advisor, NMA and member of Global Naga Forum, Dr. Rosemary Dzuvichu, stated that the tournament was more like a celebration, rather than a competition, adding that the theme “oneness through sports” resembled oneness and unity. Dzuvichu pointed out that even in the midst of much division and hatred created by elders and leaders, she expressed joy that TSUD has organised a tournament, inclusiveness of all tribes, and further requested the unifying factor to remain in the Naga community. Conveying that youths were to be the leaders of tomorrow, she stated that the seed of unity and peace must begin with the youth. She further added that the youths must also repair the traditional bonds of rela-
tionship and friendship. Reminding that peace has always been an important factor, she called upon the younger generation to seek for peace and to be messengers and ambassadors for peace. President, Angami Youth Organisation, Kekhrie Pfukha, while delivering solidarity message said that Tenyimi represented the common ancestry of ten Naga tribes, in which he claimed that it was not a social organization, but a family based on traditional roots, originated from the same parent. Despite the fact that artificial boundaries exist amongst brothers and sisters, he stated that fraternity of peace and unity have survived the phase of time, and added that youths should endeavour to ensure principle of oneness and unity of Naga tribes. He further reminded that no political vendetta should weaken or create division amongst Nagas.
