ACAUT welcomes resolution of Konyaks on taxation DIMAPUR, APR 16 (NPN): Welcoming the resolution of the Konyak community to temporarily refrain from paying any tax to any Naga political groups (NPGs) until they stand united for a unified Naga solution, the ACAUT Nagaland Friday said that all Naga tribes needed to publicly issue similar declaration in all the other districts. ACAUT through its media cell stated that “this path breaking decision” at this point of Naga history was “as revolutionary as the plebiscite of 1951”. ACAUT stated that the strongest assertion in memorandum to Simon Commission in 1929 was that “we are afraid that new and heavy taxes will be imposed on us” because of which “our land will be sold and will have no share in the land of our birth.” Today, that political consciousness has become “an antithesis to our own people by our so called leaders,” ACAUT said. It asserted that the biggest fear and dread of the Naga public was the “unabated taxes by the various splinter groups that profess the same objective without any vision.” Further, ACAUT also drew attention to the recent declaration of Naga Tribal Union, Chumoukedima Town (NTUCT) reaffirming “One Government, One Tax” as the rampant taxations by various Naga political groups was “killing (Cont’d on p-8)

COVID predominantly transmitted through air: Lancet study NEW DELHI, APR 16 (PTI): There is consistent, strong evidence to prove that the SARS-CoV-2 virus, behind the COVID-19 pandemic, is predominantly transmitted through the air, according to a new assessment published on Friday in The Lancet journal. The analysis by six experts from the UK, the US and Canada says public health measures that fail to treat the virus as predomi-

nantly airborne leave people unprotected and allow the virus to spread. “The evidence supporting airborne transmission is overwhelming, and evidence supporting large droplet transmission is almost nonexistent,” said Jose-Luis Jimenez, from the University of Colorado Boulder in the US. “It is urgent that the World Health Organization and other public health

agencies adapt their description of transmission to the scientific evidence so that the focus of mitigation is put on reducing airborne transmission,” Jimenez said. The team, led by researchers at the University of Oxford in the UK, reviewed published research and identified 10 lines of evidence to support the predominance of the airborne route. Studies have confirmed

these events cannot be adequately explained by close contact or touching shared surfaces or objects, the researchers said in their assessment. They noted that transmission rates of SARSCoV-2 are much higher indoors than outdoors, and transmission is greatly reduced by indoor ventilation. (Read more on www. nagalandpost.com)

Owing to the prevalent situation amid the second wave of COVID -19, the programme which was to be held at De Oriental Grand was changed to a virtual meet. During the inaugural programme, NU Lumami vice chancellor, Prof. Pardeshi Lal highlighted the importance of CBCS. Appreciating the concern DoHE and academic leaders for their urge to pursue quality education, he stated that the root of the quality of leadership that the nation was building upon, came from the educational institutions. Director, IQAC, NU Lumami, Prof. Dipak Sinha spoke on “syllabus under choice based credit system: implementation and guidelines” at the session-1, which was chaired by principal, Kohima Science College (Autonomous) Jotsoma, Dr. Lily Sema,. In session-II, dean, academic, St. Joseph University, Dimapur, Dr. R.K Behera spoke on “practical aspect of implementation of CBCS.” It was chaired by Dr. Asakho Hibo, principal, Japfu Christian College and president Na-

galand College Principals Forum. Meanwhile, additional director, higher education, Dr. Katoni Jakhalu gave the concluding remarks. It may be mentioned that University Grants Commission (UGC) introduced CBCS and has made it mandatory for Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) to implement it. Currently, three autonomous institutions in Nagaland have already introduced the CBCS and Nagaland University would be introducing it from the next academic session. CBCS was initi-

ated to bring in flexibility for the knowledge seeker from a list of elective, core and soft skill courses. To maximize skill based education and enhance student learning outcomes in terms of their grades as well as skills, NEP 2020 has made crucial changes in the traditional teaching-learning system in India. Thereby, the government has decided to introduce a unique concept of Academic Bank of Credit (ABC) coupled with CBCS to facilitate the best education journey to the careeroriented students of the 21st century.

DIMAPUR: City Law College Students Union (CLCSU), Mokokchung Law College Students’ Union (MLCSU) and Kohima Law College Students’ Union (KLCSU) have urged the Nagaland University (NU) authority to allow them to sit for online examination on the proposed offline examination date as any delay would cause more harm to the students in academic career. In a joint representation to the NU vice chancellor, CLCSU president Ramdihei, KLCSU president Kehozhol Noel Kulnu and MLCSU general secretary Molusen Imchen stated that it acknowledged the university authority’s assurance to take precautions in the institution. However, the law student bodies contended that COVID-19 was nei-

ther within the examination centre only nor the students were confined in the examination centre. Stating that students would travel on public transportation for the examination, the unions expressed apprehension that the second wave of pandemic was proving to be more dangerous, infectious and lethal than the first wave. They also stated that the students were prepared for offline examination provided the university authority guaranteed the health care protection of students with regard to COVID-19 infection during the course of the examination. Further, they said that in Mokokchung, all the academic institutions have been closed from April 17-May 2, 2021, thereby hindering LLB examination in Mokokchung.

DIMAPUR, APR 16 (NPN): Dimapur Baptist Women Union (DBWU) celebrated its 50th Golden Jubilee under the theme “deeper immersion” at Dimapur Ao Baptist Arogo (DABA) here, on Friday. Addressing the gathering as chief speaker, associate director of Women Forum India, Mission Coordination Committee (WFIMCC), Rev. Narola Lemtur empowered women to march forward and be deeply rooted in order to bear more fruit. Looking back on the achievements DBWU had attained, the speaker hinted that women in general had yet to accomplish a lot and encouraged the women folks to change their old ways. Maintaining that Christians had become too complacent, Lemtur lamented that “we take things for granted while welcoming Christ into our home”. She added that “it’s easier to be Marthas however; we need self discipline, constant effort and that deliberate choice to be Mary sitting at the feet

Militants attack trucks on NH-37 in Manipur Trucks damaged, no casualty Correspondent IMPHAL, Apr 16: Armed miscreants on Friday attacked a group of trucks and oil tankers plying along NH37 (Imphal-Jiribam road) in Manipur, deflating tires and causing leakage to oil tanks by firing bullets. No casualty was reported in the gun shots on vehicles 400 meters away from Kaiphundai village in Noney district today, around 8.40 am. Normal vehicular traffic on the highways was however affected as truckers were allowed to proceed to their respective destinations after the security force and police sensitized the area. Police suspect cadres of an armed group actively

operating in the area behind the attack in connection with monetary demand from the truckers servicing along the highway. No armed group owned up to the attack till the time of filing this report. Reports said that the miscreants suspected to be cadres of an armed group actively operating in the area first stopped trucks coming from both Jiribam and Imphal sides and ordered them to make a u-turn. They asked Imphalbound trucks to go back to Jiribam side and Jiri-bound to Imphal while challenging them to complaints to authorities, drivers who faced the ordeal said. They then opened fire and deflated the tires causing leakage to the tanks without any provocation and left the spot hurriedly, the drivers added.

Some truckers lodged a complaint with the security force and police stationed at Kaiphundai village after the incident. Security forces immediately rushed to the area and launched an operation to flush out the suspects. Later, trucks and oil tankers were allowed to proceed to their respective destinations, the drivers added. Members of various civil society organisations (CSOs) including Rongmei Naga Council Manipur, Kaiphundai Youth Club and village authority also arrived at the spot on hearing the news. Police have registered a case and initiated an investigation to know the motive behind the attack on trucks. They were looking if the attack was related to money demand of an armed group actively operating in the state.

since Thursday evening. Today’s clash broke out as Hunphun residents were angered when TNL functionaries were found holding a meeting in their office where the district administration had promulgated prohibitory order under section 144 of CrPC.

Assam Govt to take decision on SEBA HSLC Exam schedule soon

GUWAHATI, APR 16 (AGENCIES): Amid the rising number of COVID-19 cases in Assam, speculations are doing rounds on social media with regards to the schedule of the SEBA High School Leaving Certificate (HSLC) Exam Schedule, reports The Sentinel Assam. Reports suggest that the government will make a decision on HSLC examinations after the Rongali Bihu celebrations. Meanwhile, a section of the media has said that the Education Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma said that the SEBA (State

Khasi Hills that includes State capital Shillong is the most affected district, followed by West Jaintia Hills district with 84 active cases, 25 in Ri-Bhoi and 11 in East Jaintia Hills district. War said 12 persons have also recovered on Friday, taking the total recovery from across the State to 13,986. Meghalaya has so far registered 14, 703 COVID19 cases, including 152 deaths with 1.04 per cent case fatality rate and 13,986 recoveries, even as 156 persons were in institutional quarantine, 409 in home isolation while 19 areas has been declared as micro containment zones, War informed. Meanwhile, the District Magistrate of East Khasi Hills, Isawanda Laloo in exercise of the powers conferred upon her under Section 144 Cr.P.C. read together with Regulation 3 of the Meghalaya Epidemic Diseases, COVID–19 Regulations, 2020, has prohibited the opening of shops and establishments, roadside markets and roadside vendors, both in fixed premises or

Mizoram logs 25 new COVID-19 cases, tally rises to 4,447 Aizawl, Apr 16 (PTI): Mizoram’s COVID-19 tally rose to 4,447 as 25 more people, including a 91-yearold woman, tested positive for the virus, an official said on Friday. Of the 25 fresh cases, 19 were reported from Aizawl district, 3 cases each from Kolasib and Serchhip districts, he said. Eleven patients have travel history, the official said. Mizoram now has 258 active COVID-19 cases, while 4,477 patients have recovered from the virus. The COVID-19 death toll in the state is 12. Mizoram has so far tested 2,71,178 samples for COVID- 19, including 2,481 on Thursday. The official said 1,01,996 people have been administered the COVID19 vaccine in the state, of which 31,000 people have also received the second dose of the vaccine.

is normal.” However, such is not the case in SEBA’s matriculation system. So far, the SEBA examinations for HSLC and HS are slated to be held from May 11 this year. This year a recordbreaking number of candidates applied for HSLC and AHM exams with 4,39,379 candidates registered to appear in 2021. Meanwhile, a new system of evaluation is being introduced at the zonal level, where software has been developed for entering marks-foils.

Incidentally, as the demonstration was taking place there was sharp downpour. The members however braved the rain and continued to raise the slogans for sometime before dispersing. The activists numbering about 100 odd shouted slogans - “We want ILP, no

ILP, no rest”, and “MDA government down” – leading to tension in the high security zone. Chief Minister Conrad Sangma and other cabinet ministers were not in the Secretariat when the protest happened. CoMSO leader Roikupar Synrem said, the activists took to the street as the state Government seemed uninterested in implementing the ILP in the State. ILP has not been implemented although the Meghalaya Assembly has unanimously passed a resolution urging the Government of India to implement it. Although the members have targeted the State Government, it’s the Central Government which has not given its nod to implement the ILP in Meghalaya. Implementation of the ILP is a Central

subject as it falls under the Central legislation, Bengal Eastern Frontier Regulation Act, 1873. Union Home Minister Amit Shah is yet to hold discussions with the State leaders as well as members from the NGOs on the issue, despite promising to do so. On the other hand, all political parties seem to be united on the issue and have been demanding from the Centre to implement ILP in Meghalaya. Chief Minister Conrad Sangma had met Shah on several occasions urging him to implement ILP. Synrem also questioned the Central Government’s silence on the issue and demanded that New Delhi makes its decision clear whether it would implement the legislation.

Home Secretary Priti Patel nod Increase production of medical oxygen: PM toUKextradition of Nirav Modi to India

overview of district-level situation in these states was presented to the prime minister. He was informed that the Centre and states are in regular contact and estimates for projected demand have been shared with states as on April 20, April 25 and April 30, it said. The PMO said, accordingly, 4,880 MT , 5,619 MT and 6,593 MT have been allocated to these 12 states for meeting

their projected demand of medical oxygen as on April 20, April 25 and April 30, respectively. The prime minister was briefed about production capacity in the country to meet the rising demand, it said. He suggested increasing oxygen production as per capacity of each plant. It was discussed that surplus stocks of oxygen supply in steel plants are being offered for medical use, the PMO said. The prime minister also asked officials to ensure seamless and free movement of tankers carrying oxygen throughout the country. The government has exempted all inter-state movement of oxygen tankers from registration of permits to enable easier movement, the PMO’s statement said. Prime Minister Modi was informed that states and transporters have been asked to ensure tankers move round the clock with

drivers working in shifts to ensure faster turnaround and adequate capacity to meet the surge in demand. Cylinder filling plants will also be permitted to work for 24 hours with necessary safeguards, the PMO said. The government is allowing industrial cylinders to be used for medical oxygen after due purging, it said. Similarly, nitrogen and argon tankers will be automatically allowed to be converted to oxygen tankers to overcome the potential shortage of tankers. During the review, officials also briefed the prime minister about the efforts being made to import medical grade oxygen, the PMO said. India added a record 2,17,353 new coronavirus infections in a day taking the total tally of COVID-19 cases to 1,42,91,917, while active cases surpassed the 15-lakh mark, according to the Union Health Ministry data updated on Friday.

Modi for money laundering, saying: “Many of these are a matter for trial in India. I am satisfied again that there is evidence that he could be convicted,” according to reports. The CBI had then dubbed the UK court judgement as a “significant” achievement in its efforts to curb corruption. The CBI in a statement had said that the UK court ruling is “a reminder that fugitives, who have eluded the process of law after commission of large value frauds, cannot consider themselves above the process merely because they have changed jurisdictions”.

Nirav Modi was arrested on an extradition warrant on March 19, 2019 on charges of money laundering, conspiring to destroy evidence and intimidating witnesses. He is facing probe by the CBI for a large-scale fraud upon PNB through fraudulently obtaining LoUs or loan agreements. He is also being probed by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in a case relating to the laundering of the proceeds of that fraud. Meanwhile, he also faces two additional charges of “causing disappearance of evidence” and “intimidating witnesses” or “criminal intimidation to cause death”, which were added on to the CBI case. The ED has attached several assets of Nirav Modi running into crores of rupees in connection with the case. Nirav Modi’s uncle, Mehul Choksi of Geetanjali group, who is believed believed to be in Antigua, is also being probed in connection with the case.

for over 100 coaches and 20 isolation coaches have been provided,” he said when asked about the converted coaches that can act as COVID care centres. Sharma said the railways is keeping a close watch on all stations in Mumbai, Gujarat, Karnataka and wherever the demand is high, the zonal general managers have been authorised to operate more trains. “I assure you that there is no dearth of services, the situation is quite normal, particularly in Mumbai, Surat and Bengaluru,” he said. The Indian Railways is currently running 1,490 mail and express trains and 5,397 suburban train services on an average per day. “We are also running 28 clone trains of highlypatronised trains and 947 passenger trains,” Sharma said, adding that 70 per cent of the train services have been restored. “To clear the extra rush across the country, the railways is operating 140 additional trains,” he said.

New Delhi, April 16 (IANS): The Niranjan Akhada has announced curtailing the ongoing Kumbh Mela on April 17, almost two weeks ahead of schedule, after several senior BJP leaders in Uttarakhand held discussion with the Akhadas to convince them to end it amid surge in Covid-19 cases and concerns of violation of Covid protocols, a senior party leader said. However, the BJPruled state government has already announced that Kumbh Mela will go on as per schedule. The Kumbh Mela started on April 1 and was scheduled to end on April 30. “Senior BJP leaders met 13 Akhadas with a request to take a decision to wind up the mela seeing the severe situation of Covid. After the discussion, Akhadas have agreed to our request. “After the Niranjani Akhada, most of the Akhadas have responded positively to our request and in the next couple of days, they will make the announcement,” the senior party leader from the hill state said.

NEW DELHI, APR 16 (PTI): Amid a steep rise in coronavirus cases, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday undertook a comprehensive review to ensure adequate medical grade oxygen supply in the country and called for ramping up its production. With cases hitting a new peak in several parts of the country, the demand for medical oxygen has increased as it is a critical component in the treatment of COVID-19affected patients. Prime Minister Modi took a comprehensive review to ensure adequate medical grade oxygen supply in the country, the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) said in a statement. Inputs from ministries like health, steel, road transport, and the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) were also shared with the prime minister during the review, it said. NEW DELHI, APR 16 (PTI): No state has asked the railways to stop any train service yet, Railway Board Chairman Suneet Sharma said on Friday, adding that wherever the states have raised concerns about containment zones, passengers have undergone random tests and checks at the destinations. Addressing a press conference, Sharma said the railways has highlighted that all protocols are being followed by the states on the IRCTC’s e ticketing website, advising passengers if they need to undergo an RT-PCR test or carry COVID-negative certificates while travelling to certain areas. “As of now, no state government has asked us to stop trains. However, whenever there are concerns, the state governments have discussed the issues with us and where there are containment zones, they are doing random tests and checks. The railways has all these details on the e-ticketing website and passengers are provided information on whether they have to undergo tests

Narendra Modi stressed that it is important to ensure synergy across ministries and state governments, the PMO said. Rahul Gandhi slams govt’s COVID-19 strategy NEW DELHI, APR 16 (PTI): Taking a dig at the government, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Friday said its strategy to fight the COVID-19 pandemic consisted of imposing a ‘Tughlaqi lockdown’, ringing bells and singing praises to the Lord. The Congress-led opposition has been criticising the government over its handling of the pandemic and the vaccination drive, while the Centre has maintained that its timely steps have been instrumental in fighting COVID-19. In a tweet in Hindi, Gandhi said, “The Central government’s COVID-19 strategy -- Stage 1- Impose a Tughlaqi lockdown, Stage 2- Ring bells, Stage 3- Sing praises to the Lord.” The Congress in the past also has compared some of the government’s decisions to those taken by Delhi Sultanate ruler Muhammad bin Tughlaq, to allege that they were arbitrary and not well though out. The party has also taken swipes at the government over its ‘taali-thaali’ call last year in which people across India clapped, rang bells, blew conch shells and beat metal plates in solidarity with health workers fighting the novel coronavirus. Later, on Instagram, Gandhi posted a video from his remarks to the media on

this day last year when he had talked about lockdown providing time for ramping up health infrastructure and contrasted it with a video report of how there is a massive shortage of resources to fight the pandemic currently. “One year later, our people continue to suffer, our infrastructure continues to crumble and our prime minister continues to turn away from his responsibilities,” he said in his post.

NEW DELHI, APR 16 (PTI): Two days after US President Joe Biden announced withdrawal of American troops from Afghanistan, India on Friday said any political settlement in the war-ravaged country must be inclusive and should preserve the socio-economic and political gains of the past 19 years. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said it has noted the decision of the US to withdraw its troops from Afghanistan and to end its military operations there. “India remains engaged with the Afghan stakeholders and also our regional and international partners regarding next steps,” MEA spokesperson Arindam Bagchi said. He said India is “deeply concerned” about the increase in violence and targeted killings in Afghanistan and that it has called for an immediate and comprehensive ceasefire. “We are closely following the ongoing intra-Afghan peace process. Afghan people have seen more than four decades of war and un-

NEW DELHI, APR 16 (IANS): In a major boost to the Central Bureau of Investigation’s (CBI) probe into the Rs 13,500 crore Punjab National Bank (PNB) fraud case, UK Home Secretary Priti Patel has approved the extradition of fugitive diamantaire Nirav Modi, sources said on Friday. “The UK Home Secretary has approved the extradition request of Nirav Modi,” a CBI source related to the probe told IANS. Asked how long will it take for the CBI will bring back the businessman, who has been lodged in a prison in London since his arrest in March 2019, the source said that if Nirav Modi files an appeal, then it may take some time. On February 25 this year, a UK court allowed extradition of Nirav Modi in the Rs 13,500 crore PNB scam case. The District Judge at the Westminster Magistrates’ Court, Samuel Goozee, accepted the prima facie evidence against Nirav

The MEA spokesperson said India has participated in the Doha conference, the Geneva conference and the Heart of Asia conference in Dushanbe on the Afghan peace process. “India remains engaged with the Afghan stakeholders and also our regional and international partners regarding next steps,” he said. In a major announcement, President Joe Biden on Wednesday said US troops will be withdrawn from Afghanistan beginning May 1 and the process will be completed by September 11. There have been renewed global efforts to bring lasting peace to Afghanistan. Russia recently organised a conference in Moscow where all major stakeholders were invited to brainstorm over ways to move forward in the peace process. India has been a major stakeholder in the peace and stability of Afghanistan. It has already invested USD 2 billion in aid and reconstruction activities in the country.

Education paradigm

A

s the second wave of coronavirus hits India, where fresh cases of fresh spike continue to shatter previous records during the past eleven days; the future of the nation’s students and youth , appear to be in jeopardy as the government had to postpone the CBSE Class 12 board exams and cancelled the Class 10 exams amid growing concerns over the surge in Covid-19 infections in the country. The decision, which affects roughly 21.5 lakh Class 10 students and 14 lakh Class 12 students across the country, was taken at a meeting that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had with Education Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal and the Ministry’s top officers. For the Class 12 exam, the Ministry of education will review the situation on June 1 to decide fresh dates and make an announcement at least two weeks before the start of the exams. While the dates for various entrance exams such as JEE Main 2021, NEET 2021, KCET 2021, WBJEE 2021, AP EAMCET 2021, TS EAMCET 2021, CLAT 2021, etc have been announced, students are in dilemma whether these exams will be conducted as per the schedule or not. If the spread of COVID-19 could be effectively prevented, then the story would have been different. In the first wave in 2020, several board exams including open competitive examinations in India were either postponed or had to be cancelled. The impact of COVID waves over examinations has practically caused among the biggest damage to the country’s the education system. Covid pandemic has forced closures and re-openings of educational and other institutions in 2020 and this year too. The future of the students and youth of the country as well as majority of nations adversely affected by COVID-19 pandemic are at stake. Learning losses also threaten to extend beyond this generation and erase decades of progress, not least in support of girls and young women’s educational access and retention. This crisis is forcing teachers to reinvent their roles from that of transferring information to enabling learning. The shift to distance learning has afforded many opportunities to teach differently, encouraging self-learning, providing opportunities to learn from diverse resources, and allowing customized learning for diverse needs through high-tech and low-tech sources. Several countries are planning to implement a “hybrid” or blended model of education provision. While the Covid-19 pandemic has made online education the buzzword, a recent report by the global education network Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) says that the Indian internet infrastructure is still far from ready to support the shift. Only 24 per cent house-holds have access to the internet, according to a 2019 government survey. In rural India, the numbers are far lower, with only 4 per cent households having access. A 2018 NITI Aayog report revealed that 55,000 villages in India did not have mobile network coverage. Technology has the potential to achieve universal quality education and improve learning outcomes. However, in order to unleash its potential, the digital divide (and its embedded gender divide) must be addressed. Digital capabilities, the required infrastructure, and connectivity must reach the remotest and poorest communities. Access to technology and the internet is an urgent requirement in the information age. It should no longer be a luxury as it has become a necessity to ensure that education also mutates to impact the knowledge world.

DailyDevotion Can You Come Down From the Mountain?

While you have the light, believe in the light… —John 12:36

We all have moments when we feel better than ever before, and we say, “I feel fit for anything; if only I could always be like this!” We are not meant to be. Those moments are moments of insight which we have to live up to even when we do not feel like it. Many of us are no good for the everyday world when we are not on the mountaintop. Yet we must bring our everyday life up to the standard revealed to us on the mountaintop when we were there. Never allow a feeling that was awakened in you on the mountaintop to evaporate. Don’t place yourself on the shelf by thinking, “How great to be in such a wonderful state of mind!” Act immediately— do something, even if your only reason to act is that you would rather not. If, during a prayer meeting, God shows you something to do, don’t say, “I’ll do it”— just do it! Pick yourself up by the back of the neck and shake off your fleshly laziness. Laziness can always be seen in our cravings for a mountaintop experience; all we talk about is our planning for our time on the mountain. We must learn to live in the ordinary “gray” day according to what we saw on the mountain. Don’t give up because you have been blocked and confused once— go after it again. Burn your bridges behind you, and stand committed to God by an act of your own will. Never change your decisions, but be sure to make your decisions in the light of what you saw and learned on the mountain.

Socio-economic divides in 2021

long expected lines, the post-COVID economic data point to a widening of three pre-existing divides: The gender divide, increasing asymmetries between the incomes of the rich and the poor, and an increasing rural-urban digital divide. As each of these inequalities are subjects that need targeted policy interventions, the focus in this post is on the World Economic Forum’s Global Gender Report 2021, wherein India has slipped to the 112th ranking among 153 countries. India, home to 0.65 billion women, has widened its gender gap from 66.8 per cent a year ago to 62.5 per cent this year. The decline is seen on multiple sub-index parameters, like the labour force participation falling from 24.8 per cent to 22.3 per cent; the share of women in senior managerial positions being as low as 14.6 per cent; estimated earnings being one-fifth of men; the political empowerment index

“W

has regressed by 13 per cent wherein ministerial berths for women have declined from 23.1 per cent in 2019 to 9.1 per cent. Gender equality is a basic human right enshrined in our Constitution and its achievement has multiplier socio-economic benefits. India is committed to the timelines of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) set by the United Nations which place gender parity at the heart of bringing a gender perspective to all development initiatives. However, the COVID-triggered economic stress will defer the timelines for achieving the SDGs by 2030. The post-pandemic policy initiatives require increased gender-specific budgeting and recovery strategies: The Modi Government’s flagship schemes that positively impacted women during the first term are an outcome of closely aligning with the Gender Responsive Budgeting (GRB) norms of the ‘UN Women’. The

located for the GRB are limited to less than five per cent of the public expenditure, and shrink to about one per cent of the GDP, making it necessary to significantly increase these budgetary outlays. The NITI Aayog estimates that India will have to increase its gender-specific spend by an additional 6.2 per cent to comply with the SDG targets. Upskilling women to adapt to the changing nature of jobs: The job market has undergone a tectonic shift since COVID, so the nine-to-five model is no longer the future. Deloitte’s research shows that economic contraction is nudging companies towards hiring experienced freelancers. Data point to the fact that this gig work model has found a growing traction, with 78 lakh women who had earlier dropped off from work have sought to revive their careers as the WFH concept has opened the floodgates for those who hold professional de-

grees combined with robust work experience. Therefore, while automation will displace many jobs, it will also create 90 million flexijobs in the next 10 years, according to the Boston Consulting Group. Second, as self-employment and micro-entrepreneurship is expected to grow at an annual rate of 17 per cent and projected to reach $455 billion by 2023, State and cooperative banks must readjust their models to disburse loans at lower rates for priority sector lending to women because the data show that women have stronger saving habits and lower non-performing loans than men. As most women lack collateral and credit history to access formal lending, we need innovative ways to build credit history. How much has gender inequality stunted India’s economic progress? The lack of equal ownership of land, access to formal credit, the unfamiliarity of women with the latest technologies, high edu-

cational dropout rates as well as inequitable household and unpaid workload distribution have impeded Indian women’s economic prosperity. Gender inequality has, therefore, translated into enormous notional capital losses for India. The economic impact of achieving optimum levels of gender equality in India is estimated to be $700 billion of the added GDP by 2025. The IMF estimates that equal participation of women in the workforce will increase India’s GDP by 27 per cent. There is clear evidence: “When women do better, economies do better. That means we must tear down all obstacles that impede the participation of women in the economy, even the subconscious obstacles of the mind.” Bindu Dalmia Author, columnist and Chairperson, NCFIL, at NITI Aayog. India’s health system has collapsed

e have collapsed, Maharashtra is sinking and other states will follow.” The starkness of these words from Dr Jalil Parkar, a top pulmonologist in Mumbai’s Lilavati Hospital, silenced me in a way that little has through 2020 and 2021, when most of my journalistic energy has been spent on reporting the Covid crisis on the ground. “This is worse than World War Two,” Parkar said, lashing out in rage and hurt at how doctors and health workers are still targeted by angry and distraught families as well as armchair commentators “who sit behind their laptops and in their ivory towers”. Among other issues, Parkar’s reference was to a leaked video from his hospital which showed patients being treated in a liftlobby packed with patients, and the simple-minded judgments that followed. He is absolutely right. There will be another day to analyse the broken health care system, the woeful underspending (less

GRB is a globally-followed “best practice” among nations which allocates fiscal expenditure with specific gender perspectives. Though the Magna Carta of Women (1999) required that the Governments allocate at least five per cent of the GDP to address gender issues, the amount allocated towards women’s welfare has stagnated in recent years. The Union Government releases the ‘Gender Budgeting Statement’ consisting of two parts. The first part reflects women-specific schemes in which 100 per cent allocation is only for women. The second part reflects pro-women schemes in which 30 per cent of the allocation is for women. In the recent years, while some schemes have achieved transversal benefits like the Jan Dhan Yojana, DBT and MNREGA, specific gender-targeted schemes have made significant improvements in the socio-economic living conditions of women. However, the funds al-

than 2% of GDP) on public health, and whether Covid has pushed us towards a new policy framework. For now, on the ground, after tracking cremation grounds and graveyards, meeting doctors and nurses inside Covid ICUs, travelling with ambulance drivers and spending hours at testing centres, I can authenticate the fact that everything — and I mean everything — is running short. The most critical shortfall is that of oxygen. An hour from Mumbai in the Vasai-Palghar belt, eight patients died in a single day at the Vinayaka private hospital because oxygen ran out. I met the wife, son and daughter of one among them — Ram Babu, a tailor — in their tiny one-room apartment. At the centre of the room, taking pride of place, sat his sewing machine, placed on a high table, as the family sat on the cold floor, in paralysed grief. In small residential colonies, behind closed doors, are the real people behind the clinical numbers. In the city itself, at a Covid hospital in Chembur, I

saw already over-stretched ward staff, going to hunt for oxygen an hour-and-a-half away, bringing it back in tiny lorries, which they would then unload and pull up, all the while in their medical scrubs. “There is at least a 50% shortage here,” said officials at the hospital. It is not just Mumbai. From Patna, I received a distraught call from a stranger, a young woman who identified herself as Manisha. Her father, just 53 years of age, was being asked by the Ford Hospital in the city, according to Manisha, to try and organise his own oxygen as supplies were just not reaching the facility. At the SRV Hospital in Mumbai, Dr Rupkatha told me that not just beds but critical drugs such as Remdesivir and Tocilizumab are entirely out of stock. “Sometimes we tell patients to reach out to dealers directly, what can we do.” Talks have begun with the military and the railways, according to Saket Tiku, the head of Indian Gas Association, on how to ferry oxygen from steel plants

in the east of India to the west, where it is most critically needed. But let me translate for you in the unvarnished, chilling words of one of Maharashtra’s top Covid warriors, Dr Swaropp Hegde, what this actually means. “With not enough oxygen, we have to change our line of treatment. This will definitely mean we will see many more deaths.” The main difference between 2020 and 2021, doctors I meet on the ground in Maharashtra say, is that younger Indians are being infected, among them children as young as five and three. The mutations may mean that instead of calling this a pandemic borne from the coronavirus, we needed to start using the word “viruses” as this strain(s) is playing out in multiple different ways. Meanwhile, at crematoriums and graveyards, space runs short and the heart stops. In Ghatkopar, I meet a 95-year-old man in a wheelchair waiting to bid farewell to his wife. Another man, younger, angrier, shouts out. “First there was no space in hospitals, now there is no place

at the shamshan ghat… Where should we go?” India’s health system has cracked under the weight of Covid. We are in a national emergency. The images of the election rallies, the religious congregations, the farmers protests — any mass congregation — is not just idiotic, it is an insult to the doctors at the frontline who say they are “exhausted and worn out”. More than 800 doctors have already lost their lives to Covid. We claim to respect them and salute them every day. And yet, our utter callousness and the bizarre mixed messaging from our politicians — lockdowns for citizens, rallies for netas — are a criminal affront to every health worker on duty. As Hemant Deshmukh, dean at Mumbai’s KEM Hospital told me, “Right now, we are discussing shortage of beds and drugs and vaccines. What if we run short of doctors?” Barkha Dutt Award-winning journalist and author (The views expressed are personal)

Path-breaking 5G

ommunication is transforming wireless with the upsurge of smart devices. Today smartphone is becoming one of the world’s most indispensable modes of communication. And we have heard a lot about spectrum. In the past, most of the radio spectrum is reserved for Armed Forces. In 90s, this writer had the privilege of working with man pack Trans-Receiver MHM-300 in IAF for high frequency communication (250km by Sky Wave). We called it as signal communication transmitting of orders and instructions of commanders to subordinates in the distant installations, ships and aircrafts that played an important role in warfare. Now countries started auctioning the radio frequencies to telecom. Common people probably guess spectrum about something to do with mobiles. But it’s a range of radio-waves that used for communication. The range of radio wave spectrum is (used for AM radio, Broadcast TV, Cellphones, GPS, Satellite Radio, weather radar, 4G, cable TV satellite transmissions, Wi-Fi networks, highway toll tags and 5G) 9KHz to 400GHz wave length followed by Infrared, Light, Ultraviolet and Gamma Rays (highest frequen-

cies). However Telecom Spectrum uses frequency brands from 700MHz to 2500MHz only. Cellular technology has transformed our lives and we come across the terminology ‘G’. The evolution started since First Generation (1G) in 1980 for working on analog radio signals that supported mobile voice calls. It was first commercially automated in Japan by Nippon (NTT) followed by Europe (NMT) and USA (AT&T) using revolutionary Motorola. 2G (1800MHz) in 1990 uses digital radio signals for voice calls and SMS with a bandwidth of 64Kbps. People poured out for mobile connection after 1995. 3G (2100MHz) in 2000 made it possible for web browsing (digitized voice, video calls and conferencing) with a speed of 1 to 2Mbps when BSNL incorporated. Nokia became a household name then. 4G (2-8GHz) launched in 2009 with a peak speed of 100Mbps to 1Gbpsenabling video consumption with higher data speed and even possible 3D virtual reality. Free calls and data from Reliance Jio in 2016 lead India’s 4G revolution. Users on social network site swells. Consumers are hungry for more and faster internet bandwidth. With global mobile

data traffic doubling every alternative year, the world demands for a high-speed connectivity. The internet becomes important as streaming (video and films) is catching on. Fifth Generation (28-100GHz now) is the answer for doing IoT (Internet of Things – it connects devices over internet), 16K video streaming, AI, quantum computing, and predictive cyber security in the future. People need fast and uninterrupted sharing, streaming and browsing, no matter what’s the tariff. But 5G is not only about downloading/ uploading speed; it reduces the latency (Time taken by a network to respond).5G will have greater bandwidth, wider area in the frequency spectrum giving higher download speeds, eventually up to 10Gbpsthat will ensure no network congestion. Will 5G technology soon be here to face reality? 5G is the latest upgrade in the long-term evolution (LTE) mobile broadband networks experiencing little interference from surrounding signals and has advantage of sending large amounts of data at very high speeds. In this high-band spectrum (30300GHz), internet speeds have been tested to be as high as 20Gbps as compared to 4G at 1Gbps. 5G

application will help to incorporate AI (Artificial Intelligence) in our daily lives and also facilitate the ecosystem such as entertainment, multimedia, Smart Cities, Smart Farming, Telemedicine, Controlling of Critical Infrastructure and Vehicles (self-driving). Network might help cloud systems to stream software updates, music, and navigation data. That will be a real breakthrough for the massive IoT, Leveraging Machine Learning, AI, Automate Network Management, Vir tual Spaces and Security and could be a critical enabler of the Fourth Industrial Revolution. 5G will surely enhance experiences and drive digitization of industries. But there are hurdles in rolling out 5G in India. It will require a fundamental change to the core architecture of the communication system. For transition from 4G to 5G technology, it might create financial liability on consumers. Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea are delaying the 5G spectrum allocation for capital inadequacy. Chipmakers and smartphone companies are conducting trials of 5G technology worldwide, Nokia is fully geared up for the upcoming 5G trials in India. Jio will launch its low cost 5G smart-

phone very soon. Global telecom companies have already started building 5G networks and rolling it out to customers in US and South Korea. Japan and China too started on a trial basis. India being a traditional late adopter of advanced technologies, still struggling to achieve the speed which 4G net-

work offers. Our average download speed is 9.12 Mbps in comparison to the global average speed of 23.54 Mbps. Hope the arrival of 5G enabling smart devices can be a game changer for better service delivery, faster access and deeper penetration of digital services. Kamal Baruah

Traffic confusion over New Dhansiri bridge Sir, The recent inauguration of the much-awaited RCC T-beam bridge by honourable chief minister of Nagaland Neiphiu Rio over Dhansiri river near Super Market Dimapur is a welcome move as it has eased traffic problem which the citizens have been facing for quite some time. CM has rightly said that the bridge would lessen the hardships of commuters and further boost economic activities. However, I would like to seek clarification from the Dimapur Traffic Police regarding one-way traffic advisory over that bridge as it has caused confusion. DTP on the day of inauguration issued advisory but it has been observed that two-way vehicular traffic is being allowed. All these while I have been using Burma Camp road to go to Purana Bazaar side thinking advisory is being implemented. Therefore, to clear confusion the traffic police should intervene and do the needful. Tokali, Dimapur.

Shah calls Rahul ‘tourist politician’ blames Mamata for denial of citizenship to Matuas

Home Minister Amit Shah campaigns ahead of 5th phase of West Bengal Assembly polls, at Krishnanagar in Nadia district, Friday. (PTI)

hul Gandhi who addressed his first two election rallies on Wednesday after keeping off the campaign in the state where his party is contesting in alliance with the Left while fighting against it in Kerala, Shah branded him a “tourist politician”.

“A tourist politician arrived in Bengal after almost the entire poll got over and questioned our DNA. BJP’s DNA is development, nationalism and Atmanirbhar Bharat,” he said. Flaying “dynasty politics” in the TMC, Shah

said while the BJP wants to implement the PM Kisan Samman Nidhi scheme for farmers in Bengal, “Didi only wants Bhaipo (nephew) Samman Nidhi”. Top BJP leaders have been accusing Banerjee’s nephew and Diamond Harbour MP Ab-

hishek Banerjee of wielding” unwarranted influence” over the government machinery and running “extortion syndicates”. “After people’s mandate on May 2 (counting day), nobody will be left to take cut money, the government of syndicates will be no more there, the government that works for Bhaipo will be gone,” he asserted. The home minister assailed the TMC government for” failing to check infiltrators who take away the jobs of our youths and food of our poor”. “Let alone illegal immigrants, not even a bird from across the border will be allowed to enter Bengal. Not theTMC, neither the Left, nor the Congress.... only BJP can stop infiltration,” he asserted. He claimed the demography of Nadia district, which shares border with Bangladesh, had got altered because of infiltration.

2nd wave of coronavirus can last up to 100 days: Expert’s advisory

NEW DELHI, APR 16 (PTI): The second wave of coronavirus can last up to 100 days and such waves will keep coming till 70 per cent of the population is vaccinated and herd immunity is achieved, according to an advisory prepared by an expert for Southeast Delhi Police. Aimed at creating awareness among police personnel, the advisory by Dr. Neeraj Kaushik said the new mutated virus has potential to skip immunity and even vaccine. “This is the reason for re-infection

and cases among vaccinated people.” This mutated virus is so infectious that if one member is affected, the whole family gets infected. It is preying on children too, Dr Kaushik said in the document. He said that routine RT-PCR tests may not detect the mutated virus. However, loss of smell is a very strong indicator that a person is corona positive. “The second wave of coronavirus can last up to 100 days. Such waves will keep coming until we

Kazi, an assistant police inspector, was arrested by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) on April 11. He was produced before a holiday court here at the end of his NIA remand on Friday. The court sent him to judicial custody as the central probe agency did not seek his further remand. The NIA has alleged that Kazi is involved in the conspiracy of the case, along with Waze, who is the prime accused. Kazi was involved in

destroying the evidence, the agency has alleged. The NIA had earlier said that in its parallel probe it had launched soon after the explosives-laden vehicle was spotted on February 25, it found that the accused allegedly killed Hiran, who was in possession of that vehicle, fearing that he will disclose their plan. After the case was transferred to the NIA, the accused started destroying evidences like CPU and DVR, it had said. Days after the SUV was found near Ambani’s residence, Hiran was found dead in a creek in Thane on March 5. The NIA had arrested Waze on March 13 in connection with its probe into the case. Besides the duo, the probe agency has arrested Vinayak Shinde, a former policeman and Naresh Gor, a bookie. They are currently in judicial custody.

NABA DW IP / NE W DELHI, APR 16 (PTI): West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said on Friday she will call upon the Election Commission to stop the BJP from bringing “outsiders” during campaigning, squarely blaming the saffron party for exacerbating the COVID-19 situation in the state. B a n e r j e e, d u r i n g a public meeting here in Nadia district, said the BJP brought people from “worst-hit” states like Gujarat for erecting marquees for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s poll rallies. “I will tell the EC to stop the inflow of outsiders from states like Gujarat who are responsible for the COVID-19spread in Bengal. “We have nothing to say if the PM or other leaders come for campaigning... Why should the BJP bring people from worst-affected states to set up podiums and pandals for rallies,” she said. The Trinamool Congress boss said local labourers and decorators can be engaged for the purpose after necessaryCOVID-19 tests. Referring to her injury, the chief minister said the BJP wanted to stop her from canvassing by “targeting her leg”, but she has managed to come out triumphant. “They had targeted my leg, but I proved them wrong with the blessings of people. The injury has healed 75 percent,” she said. Banerjee, who suffered

for effective clinical management of severe COVID-19 patients across the country, the ministry has advised all central ministries to issue instructions to hospitals under their control or their PSUs to set-up exclusive dedicated hospital wards or separate blocks within the hospitals for COVID care, as was done last year. These hospitals and blocks should have separate entry and exit points for management of COVID-19 cases, to provide treatment services including specialised care for confirmed COVID-19 cases, the health ministry said. “Additionally, these dedicated hospital wards or blocks have to be equipped to provide all supportive and ancillary services including oxygen supported beds, ICU beds, ventilators and specialised Critical Care Units (wherever available), laboratory services, imaging services, kitchen, laundry etc., along with dedicated

She said the COVID19 surge in West Bengal could have been under check had Modi ensured vaccination for every citizen of the state. “The virus had become weak in the last five-sixmonths. But, the PM did not take steps to vaccinate every citizen. He did not even respond to my suggestion for free vaccination for people of the state

for political reasons. “On our part, we have already started free inoculation at some camps in Kolkata and other areas,” Banerjee said West Bengal on Thursday recorded the highest single-day spike of 6,769 coronavirus cases and at least 22 more fatalities. Urging all eligible voters to exercise their franchise on Saturday, the fifth phase of assembly elections, she alleged, “If you don’t, citing some excuses, the BJP will try to delete your name from the voter list.”

WB polls: Citing Covid, EC bans rallies, public meetings from 7 pm to 10 am

Against the backdrop of rising COVID-19 cases, the Election Commission on Friday put in place restrictions on campaigning by political parties, including curtailing its time, for the West Bengal assembly elections. In an order, the poll panel curtailed the time for campaign up to 7 pm. Earlier it was up to 10 pm. Now there will be no campaign between 7 pm and 10 am on campaign day in the state, the Election Commission said. It also extended the silence period from 48 hours to 72 hours in each of the remaining three of the eight phases of the West Bengal polls to be held on April 22, 26 and 29. During the silence period, which is usually for 48 hours, parties and candidates cannot hold rallies and meetings.

Cash, liquor bribe to voters in 5 assembly polls at record high of Rs 1,000 cr: EC

NEW DELHI, APR 16 (PTI): The seizure of illegal inducements to voters, such as liquor and cash, during the ongoing polls to five assemblies and bypolls to some seats has crossed the record value of Rs 1,000 crore, a whopping jump of over four times since the 2016 polls, the Election Commission said Friday. An Election Commission “progressive” report, which will get updated as

the remaining phases of poll are conducted, said the maximum Rs 446.28 crore was seized in Tamil Nadu, where the elections have already ended, followed by West Bengal (Rs 300.11 crore), where four phases are yet to take place. Polling in Assam, Kerala and the Union Territory of Puducherry has also finished. Counting of votes for these five assemblies is slated to be held on

May 2. The poll-panel called these seizures by its various field and technical enforcement teams a “his-

toric milestone” achieved “for the first time in any assembly electoral process”, meaning during simultaneously-held assembly polls. “The stupendous rise in seizure figures is because of better preparedness and multi-pronged strategy of the Commission. The Commission conducted exhaustive reviews at various levels which included review meetings with enforcement agencies of

the state/UT and central agencies,” the EC said in a statement. The agencies of the Union government primarily include the Income Tax Department, the Customs and GST directorates and the Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU). According to data compiled till Thursday, the EC said, Tamil Nadu had reported a total seizures of Rs 446.28 crore, West Bengal Rs 300.11 crore (so

TEHATTA (WB), APR 16 (PTI): Union Home Minister Amit Shah Friday accused West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee of denying citizenship to Dalit Matua and Namsudra communities as her “vote bank would not like it”. Reaching out to the two numerically strong communities which can infuence the outcome of assembly elections in many seats, Shah said a Rs 100 crore fund will be created for their welfare if the BJP is voted to power in the state. He also mocked Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, calling him a “tourist politician”. “These Matua and Namsudra families are living here for50-70 years, for three generations. But Didi says they will not get citizenship, why? Because her vote back would not like it,” he told an election rally in Tehatta in Nadia district. Taking a swipe at Ra-

New Delhi, Apr 16 (PTI): The country’s largest carmaker Maruti Suzuki India (MSI) on Friday said it has hiked prices of most of its models by up to Rs 22,500 with immediate effect to partially offset the impact of the rise in input costs. Barring Celerio and Swift, all the models of the company will be covered under the price increase exercise. “The company is increasing the price for select models owing to increase in various input costs,” the auto major said in a regulatory filing. The weighted average price increase in ex-showroom prices (Delhi) across models is 1.6 per cent, it added. The new prices are effective from Friday, MSI said. The company sells various models ranging from Alto to S-Cross, priced between Rs 2.99 lakh and Rs 12.39 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi). In March, the car market leader had said that over the past year, the cost of the company’s vehicles has been impacted adversely due to an increase in various input costs. On January 18 this year, the automaker had announced to hike prices of select models by up to Rs 34,000 due to a rise in input costs.

personalities from their ranks showed a commitment to a joint struggle against the military, which is certain to boost morale to the anti-coup cause. Security forces have killed at least 726 protesters and bystanders since the Feb. 1 military takeover, according to the Assistance Association for Political Prisoners, which monitors casualties and arrests. The protests and the killings have been continuing on a daily basis. The National Unity Government is nominally an upgrade from what had been called the Committee Representing Pyidaungsu Hluttaw, which was formed shortly after the coup by elected lawmakers who were barred by the army from taking their seats. The CRPH sought international recognition as Myanmar’s sole legitimate government body, but won only popular support from those opposed to military rule. The junta declared the CRPH an illegal organization, and issued arrest warrants for its leading members. A video posted Friday on social media showed veteran activist Min Ko Naing

Min Ko Naing

announcing the formation of the new body. He was a leader of the failed 1988 uprising against a previous military dictatorship and is one of the country’s most respected political figures aside from Suu Kyi. He went quickly underground after the coup and apparently has been active in political organizing against the junta since then. “Please support the National Unity Government for the future of our citizens and our younger generation.” he said. “The people are the decision makers and the people will fight the final battle. Victory is coming, We must win our revolution.” More details were provided in a statement on social media by Dr. Sasa, a physician and philanthropist who though in hiding has been the online public face of the CRPH..

“Today, at the end of Thingyan on the eve of Myanmar’s new year, we are proud to announce the formation of a new National Unity Government and the dawn of a new era for the people of Myanmar,” said Sasa. “For the first time in our history, Myanmar has a unity government that will reflect one of our nation’s greatest strengths - the diversity of our people.” The CRPH announced that Suu Kyi retains her post as state counsellor and Win Myint as president, though both were arrested in the coup and remain in detention, with criminal charges against them that supporters call politically motivated. Sasa said the interim’s government’s vice president — its acting president - is Duwa Lashi La, a political leader of the Kachin minority from the country’s north, while the prime minister is Mahn Win Khaing Than, from the Karen minority in eastern Myanmar, who had been speaker of the elected upper house of Parliament. Sasa himself comes from the Chin minority, while Myanmar’s government and military have always been dominated by the Burman majority.

Eight dead in shooting in Indianapolis

Indianapolis, Apr 16 (AP): A gunman killed eight people and wounded several others before apparently taking his own life in a late-night attack at a FedEx facility near the Indianapolis airport, police said, in the latest in a spate of mass shootings in the United States after a relative lull during the pandemic. Five people were hospitalized after the Thursday night shooting, according to police. One of them had critical injuries, police spokesperson Genae Cook said. Another two people were treated and released at the scene. FedEx said people who worked for the company were among the dead. A witness said that he was working inside the building when he heard several gunshots in rapid succession. “I see a man come out with a rifle in his hand and he starts firing and he starts yelling stuff that I could not understand,” Levi Miller

Last month, eight people were fatally shot at massage businesses across the Atlanta area, and 10 died in gunfire at a supermarket in Boulder, Colorado. It was at least the third mass shooting this year in Indianapolis alone. Five people, including a preg-

Iran starts enriching uranium to 60%, its highest level ever Dubai, Apr 16 (AP): Iran began enriching uranium Friday to its highest level ever, edging closer to weapons-grade levels to pressure talks in Vienna aimed at restoring its nuclear deal with world powers after an attack on its main atomic site. A top official said only a few grams an hour of uranium gas would be enriched up to 60 per cent purity — triple the level it once did but at a rate far slower than what Tehran could produce. International inspectors already said Iran planned to do so above-ground at its Natanz nuclear site, not deep within its underground halls hardened to withstand airstrikes. The move is likely to raise tensions even as Iran negotiates in Vienna over a way to allow the US back into the agreement and lift the crushing economic sanctions it faces. However, its scope also provides Iran with a way to quickly deescalate if it chose. The announcement also marks a significant escalation after the attack that damaged centrifuges at Natanz, an attack this past weekend suspected of having been carried out by Israel. While Israel has yet to claim it, it comes amid a long-running shadow war

between the two Mideast rivals. Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf, Iran’s parliament speaker, announced the move in a Twitter post later acknowledged by Iranian state television. “The young and Godbelieving Iranian scientists managed to achieve a 60 per cent enriched uranium product,” Qalibaf said. “I congratulate the brave nation of Islamic Iran on this success. The Iranian nation’s willpower is miraculous and can defuse any conspiracy.” The head of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran, the country’s civilian nuclear arm, later acknowledged the move to 60 per cent, according to state TV. Ali Akbar Salehi said the centrifuges now produce 9 grams an hour, but that would drop to 5 grams an hour in the coming days. “Now, any enrichment (level) is possible if we decide it,” Salehi said. State TV later referred to the decision as a “show of power against terrorist rascality.” It wasn’t clear why the first announcement came from Qalibaf, a hardline former leader in the paramilitary Revolutionary Guard already named as a potential presidential candidate in Iran’s upcoming June election.

Police have not identified the shooter or said whether he was an employee at the facility. They said “preliminary information from evidence at the scene” indicated that he died by suicide. “We’re still trying to ascertain the exact reason and cause for this incident,” Cook said.

Craig McCartt, of the Indianapolis police, told NBC Today early Friday that officers still knew “very little.” Chris Bavender, a spokesperson for the FBI’s Indianapolis office, said that they are helping the police with the investigation. Family members gathered at a nearby hotel to await word on loved ones — and some employees were bused there for tearful reunions. But other relatives said they still had no information about their loved ones hours later. Most employees aren’t allowed to carry cellphones inside the FedEx building, making contact with them difficult. “When you see notifications on your phone, but you’re not getting a text back from your kid and you’re not getting information and you still don’t know where they are … what are you supposed to do?” said Mindy Carson, holding back tears. Her daughter, Jessica, works in the facility and she had not heard from her.

Asean summit on Myanmar set for April 24

J a k a r ta , A p r 1 6 (IANS): Leaders of the Association of South-East Asian Nations (Asean) are expected to meet in the Indonesian capital Jakarta next week to discuss the political crisis in Myanmar following the February 1 military coup, an official source said on Friday. Indonesian President Joko Widodo called for a summit of the 10-member Asean bloc last month, after hundreds were killed in a military crackdown on anticoup protesters in Myanmar, reports dpa news agency. The summit is to be held in person in Jakarta on April 24, said the source close to the Indonesian President. “All the 10 countries are expected to be represented,” the source added. More than 700 people have been killed by Myanmar’s security forces since protests broke out after the coup that deposed former de facto leader Aung San Su Kyi’s civilian government, according to the Assistance Association for Political Prisoners (AAPP), a Myanmar human rights group based in Thailand.

World urges Biden not to hoard COVID vaccine NEW DELHI/WASHINGTON, Apr 16 (IANS): From the owner of the biggest producer of one of the Coronavirus vaccines in India to several senators in the US, a wide range of people have appealed to US President Joe Biden to temporarily suspend the intellectual property rules for the vaccine production. As the second wave of the Coronavirus pandemic intensifies, India has appealed to the WTO to waive off the rules so that it can scale up the Covid-19 vaccine production. The virus which originated in Wuhan in 2019 has killed around 3 million people so far. In India alone, 170,000 people have died due to the contagious disease. CEO and owner of Serum Institute Pune-the biggest manufacturer of Oxford-AstraZeneca Covid-19 vaccine, Adar Poonawalla, in a tweet which went viral, requested the Biden administration to lift the embargo on raw material exports out of the US. “If we are to truly unite in beating this virus, on behalf of the vaccine industry outside the U.S., I humbly request you to lift the embargo of raw mate-

Yet the mainstream US media has ignored the global impacts of the dual U.S. hoarding. Possibly influenced by Poonawalla’s tweet, the government on Friday announced that it will help scale production for locally manufactured Covaxin vaccine, from 10 million/ month in April to 100 million/month by September 2021. “The current production capacity of indigenously developed Covaxin vaccine will be doubled by May-June 2021 and then increased nearly 6-7 fold by July - August 2021 i.e increasing the production from 1 crore vaccine doses in April, 2021 to 6-7 crore vaccine dose/month in July - August. It is expected to reach nearly 10 crore doses per month by Sep 2021,” the government said in an official statement. Opening borders risk Covid spike: Aus PM Canberra, Apr 16 (IANS): Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison on Friday warned that opening the country’s borders too early could lead to an influx of coronavirus cases. Morrison said that Covid-19 vaccines were not a “silver bullet” and Australians would need to prepare for “many” more cases if the country’s strict border restrictions were lifted, reports Xinhua news agency. Australia’s borders were closed in March 2020 with all residents and citizens returning to the country from overseas forced to spend 14 days in hotel quarantine. “If we were to lift the borders and people to come, then you would see those cases increase and Australians would have to become used to dealing with 1,000 cases a week or more,” Morrison told Nine Entertainment radio.

Myanmar activist announces shadow govt Yangon, Apr 16 (AP): Opponents of Myanmar’s ruling junta went on the political offensive Friday, declaring they have formed an interim national unity government with members of Aung San Suu Kyi’s ousted cabinet and major ethnic minority groups. The move comes on the eve of a diplomatic initiative to solve Myanmar’s crisis by the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, which is expected to hold a summit next week. A violent crackdown by the junta has failed to stem opposition to the coup, and as the army has spread the fight to ethnic minorities in border areas, some ASEAN members believe the crisis threatens regional stability. Opponents of the coup have been seeking an alliance with ethnic minority groups as a way of strengthening their resistance. The minorities for decades have kept up on-again, off-again armed struggles for greater autonomy in the borderlands. While it was not clear if the minority political organisations had formally joined an alliance, the appointment of prominent

Cancer Risk of some BP medicines

M

ost people are familiar with common sun-protection advice, from wearing and reapplying sunscreen to putting on a hat. But a new Canadian study finds that for people who take certain blood pressure medications, that advice becomes even more critical because those drugs can increase their sensitivity to the sun’s harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays. The researchers reviewed data for nearly 303,000 adults in Ontario over 65 who were prescribed medications for high blood pressure. The study then compared their skin cancer histories with those of more then 605,000 adults who weren’t taking antihypertensive drugs. The findings showed that certain types of high blood pressure drugs — known as thiazide diuretics — were associated with higher rates of keratinocyte skin cancers, including basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, advanced keratinocyte carcinoma and melanoma. “Our finding is not meant to rule out thiazide diuretics for patients,” stressed study author Dr. Aaron Drucker. He’s a clinical investigator in the dermatology department at Brown University’s Alpert Medical School, in Providence, R.I. “Overall, it’s more a potential flag for someone who might be at increased risk of skin cancer, that has had one in the past or they have really fair skin and a lot of sun damage, that this might predispose them further to more skin cancer.

Then, yes, someone like that might consider an alternative,” Drucker said. Fo u r o t h e r b l o o d pressure medications — angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors, beta blockers, angiotensin II receptor blockers (ARBs) and calcium channel blockers — did not show an association with skin cancer risk. “None of the other antihypertensive medications show the same signal, so in a way we have four negative controls,” Drucker said. Previous studies had shown increased risk of skin cancer among people taking the drug, also known as hydrochlorothiazide. This most common of the thiazide drugs earlier prompted warnings against prolonged use by Health Canada, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and the European Medicines Agency, the study authors noted. This new study followed people over time to determine if risk happened not just because a person took these medications, but whether the cumulative dose or duration might impact their skin cancer risk. Higher cumulative exposure (taking the medications over a longer period of time) was associated with increased rates of skin cancer, the findings showed.

“If you’re on these medications for just a few years, it doesn’t have a major impact on your cancer risk. But for someone who has been on, let’s say, 25 milligrams a day of hydrochlorothiazide for 10 years, in our study that person would have a 40% increased risk of keratinocyte carcinoma,” Drucker said. If they were on that same dose for 20 years, the increased relative risk compared to somebody who had not taken hydrochlorothiazide is a 75% increased risk, he added. “So, there’s a big effect of how much of it you’ve taken over how long that I think is really important to get across,” Drucker explained. UV radiation exposure is the most important environmental risk factor for skin cancer. Phototoxicity induced by medication can cause cellular damage to the skin, increasing the sun’s carcinogenic potential, the study authors noted in the report published April 12 in the CMAJ. Dr. John Strasswimmer is a Florida-based boardcertified dermatologist and spokesperson for the Skin Cancer Foundation. He was not involved with the study, but commented on the findings. (HealthDay)

London, Apr 16 (PTI): With its season on the line, Arsenal’s players produced a devastating first-half performance on Thursday to beat Slavia Prague and reach the Europa League semifinals. They’ll meet a familiar face there. Arsenal’s 4-0 win in the Czech capital - secured courtesy of a three-goal burst in six minutes from the 18th - clinched a 5-1 aggregate victory and set up a last-four match against Villarreal, which is managed by Unai Emery. The Spanish coach spent an underwhelming 18 months at Arsenal as Arsene

Wenger’s replacement in 2018-19 and is rebuilding his managerial career at Villarreal, which beat Dinamo Zagreb 2-1 and advanced 3-1 on aggregate. Manchester United and Roma complete the semifinal lineup. United is back in the last four for a second straight season after beating Spanish team Granada 2-0 for a 4-0 aggregate win. Roma drew 1-1 with Ajax to squeeze through 3-2 on aggregate. Arsenal and Roma were under pressure to advance because the Europa League represents their only chance of winning a trophy this season and their

only realistic route into next season’s Champions League, owing to their lowly current placing in their domestic leagues. Arsenal is ninth in the Premier League and Roma seventh in Serie A. The winner of the Europa League earns an automatic spot in the far more lucrative Champions League. Arsenal sent a message before and during the win over Slavia. The host learned the day before the game that its defender, Ondrej Kudela, had been banned for 10 games for racially abusing Rangers’ Glen Kamara during a round-of-16 game last

month. Before kickoff, as Slavia’s players stood in a line at the centre circle, Arsenal’s players took a knee in a symbolic gesture in support of the Black Lives Matter movement, with Alexandre Lacazette doing so right in front of the Slavia team and staring at the players. Arsenal responded to having an early goal by Emile Smith Rowe ruled out for offside by VAR by scoring three times in quick succession, first though Nicolas Pepe in the 18th and then Lacazette - from the penalty spot - and Bukayo Saka. That meant Slavia, the runaway leader of the Czech

league which hadn’t lost at home in nearly 18 months, needed to score four goals to qualify. By halftime, the host had essentially given up as it removed some of its key players to preserve its condition for the league. Lacazette, continuing as striker with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang sidelined after contracting malaria, added a fourth in the 77th minute. Arsenal lost to Chelsea in the Europa League final in 2019. Villarreal’s goals were scored by Paco Alcacer and Gerard Moreno at the end of the first half, with Zagreb — the last-16 conqueror of Tottenham

— grabbing a consolation through Mislav Orsic. Villarreal is in the semifinals of the Europa League for the first time since 2016. Edinson Cavani scored his 50th goal in European competition to lead United to victory over Granada at Old Trafford. The 34-yearold Uruguay striker met a flicked header back into the middle of the area by Paul Pogba with a left-foot volley into the bottom corner in the sixth minute. A 90th-minute own-goal by Jesus Vallejo completed a second straight 2-0 win over Granada. United lost in the semifinals to Sevilla last season and has been defeated at that stage three other times — twice in the English League Cup and again in the FA Cup — under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. Roma will look to inflict another last-four loss on United after surviving a scare against Ajax, which took the lead through Brian Brobbey’s lobbed finish in the 49th to tie the score on aggregate at 2-2. Edin Dzeko equalised in the 72nd and Ajax couldn’t find the goal that would have taken the match to extra time. Solskjaer was part of the United side that beat Roma 7-1 at Old Trafford in the Champions League quarterfinals in 2007.

11 Ukraine starts vaccinating Olympic, Paralympic athletes

An athlete receives a dose of COVID-19 vaccine at a hospital in Kiev, Ukraine, April 15.

Kiev, Apr 16 (IANS): Ukraine started vaccinating national athletes of Olympic and Paralympic teams with CoronaVac vaccine produced by Chinese company Sinovac Biotech, the country’s health ministry said. “We want all athletes to attend the competitions without any restrictions, (and) we want to see the Ukrainian flag, hear the Ukrainian national anthem and be proud of the victories of our athletes. Paralympians and Olympians are the pride and hope of the country. Our task is to protect their health and life,” Health Minister Maksym Stepanov said on Thursday, Xinhua reported. The vaccination is voluntary, and athletes feel

good after the vaccination, Stepanov added. Ukraine’s National Sports Medicine Center chief Viacheslav Chernenko said athletes put much hope at CoronaVac and believe it would help to stop the virus. “We have the plan to vaccinate 750 persons of Olympic and Paralympic delegations going to Tokyo Olympic Games. We have 1,500 doses of the CoronaVac vaccine synthesized by Sinovac Biotech China,” Chernenko told Xinhua on Thursday. “China has been doing very well in terms of financing the laboratory activities. And it has been vaccinating the people at high paste. I hope Ukraine would be able to do the same,” said Chernenko.

Tsitsipas enters Monte Carlo semis Qualifying for Olympics just the start: Sailor Kumanan Monaco, Apr 16 (AFP): Stefanos Tsitsipas advanced to the semi-finals of the Monte Carlo Masters on Friday when his quarter-final opponent Alejandro Davidovich withdrew after losing the first set 7-5. Tsitsipas, the world number five, will play his sixth Masters 1000 semi-final on Saturday, and his first in the principality, against Belgian David Goffin or Englishman Dan Evans, the conqueror of Novak Djokovic. Struggling with an injury to his left thigh, Spaniard Davidovich tried an underarm serve when facing set point. Tsitsipas pounced to hit a winning backhand return. Until he was hurt, Davidovich gave his Greek opponent problems. But at 3-3, Davidovich called for the doctor to treat his left thigh. He immediately managed the first break of the match, as Tsitsipas began to show signs of irritation, to the point of receiving a warning for swearing. Ts i t s i p a s immediately broke back and a s D av i dovich struggled, broke again to end the set and the match.

Meanwhile, a day after knocking out top-ranked Novak Djokovic, unseeded Dan Evans beat 11th-seeded David Goffin 5-7, 6-3, 6-4 to reach the Monte Carlo Masters semifinals on Friday. The British player will contest the first Masters semifinal of his career against fourth-seeded Stefanos Tsitsipas, a French Open semifinalist last year. The big-serving Greek l e d 7 - 5 a g a i n s t Alejandro D av i d ov i c h Fo k i n a when the unseeded Spaniard abandoned with a thigh injury. In the day’s first match, Evans led 5-3 but Goffin won the next four games to take the first set. However, the Belgian could not get a grip on a contest where he converted just two of his 17 break points, and his double-fault gave Evans the second set. Goffin shouted at himself after wasting three break points in the opening game of the decider, but then did even worse when he blew four break points at 4-4.

Kumanan, who began competing at the top level at the age of 15 and represented India at the 2014 and 2018 Asian Games, first created history in January 2020 when she became the first Indian woman to win a medal at the Hempel World Cup Series in Miami. Since early 2020, she has been living in Gran Canaria, Spain, training under Tamas Eszes at his academy. “Nethra is at the beginning of her journey. Going to Tokyo is only our first start. equal representation of women and men competing for the first time in its history,” tweeted the global organisation. They also posted a GIF, tracing the history of the growth of women athletes - and disciplines - over a period of 124 years of the Olympic movement. For the record, the first modern Olympics, hosted by Athens in 1896, had 280

male participants from 13 nations. The Games truly became global in 1924 Paris when 3,089 athletes competed, of which 135 were women. According to UN Women, the 1900 Paris Olympics had 2.2 per cent participation by women; it came down to 0.9 per cent in 1904 and by the 1932 Games in Los Angeles, the percentage had risen to nine. By the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul, the percentage of women had gone up to 26, and of the 8,400-odd athletes, about 2,200 were women. Discipline-wise too, while only four were designated for women, compared to men’s 21 in 1904, it had risen to 40 in 2008 Beijing as compared to men, who competed in 41 events. Women competed in more disciplines at the 2016 Rio Olympics -- 41 as compared to men in 40 disciplines - with their percentage standing at 45. The Tokyo Olympics will see nearly half of the athletes -- 48.8 per cent - being women competing in 46 disciplines as compared to men who will take part in 45.

World 100m champion Coleman’s ban reduced

London, Apr 16 (Agencies): World 100m champion Christian Coleman has had his two-year ban for missing three drug tests reduced by six months following an appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (Cas). The 25-year-old American will still miss the Tokyo Olympics starting in July as the ban runs until November 14. He can, however, defend his world indoor and outdoor titles next year. Cas “partially upheld” the Athletics Integrity Unit’s (AIU) ruling but found his “degree of negligence to be lower”. Coleman, who won 100m gold at the World Championships in Doha in 2019, was first provisionally suspended in June 2020 after missing a third test in December 2019. The indoor 60m world record holder did not contest his first missed test on 16 January 2019 but disputed his filing failure on 26 April 2019 and whereabouts failure on 9 December. The AIU investigation into his rule violations said there was no suggestion he had ever taken a banned substance. However, Coleman’s attitude towards his anti-doping obligations was described as “entirely careless, perhaps even reckless” by the AIU in October. According to the AIU’s out-

of-competition testing guidelines, athletes are accountable for missed tests if they are not at their specified location for the one-hour period they have stated. The tester must wait for the full 60 minutes before leaving. Coleman said he was Christmas shopping “five minutes away” from home, and that the tester made no effort to contact him during his third whereabouts failure. Cas said Coleman “should have been on ‘high alert’ on that day” considering his previous whereabouts failures, but decided “he would have been able to return” in time to do a test if contacted. “Although a telephone call during the 60-minute window was not required by the rules, it was nevertheless reasonable for the athlete to expect such a call, as a matter of standard practice among other doping control officers,” Cas said in a statement.

Chahar guides CSK to 6-wkt win over Punjab Vinesh, Anshu, Divya

Deepak Chahar celebrates the wicket of Mayank Agarwal of Punjab Kings at the Wankhede Stadium Mumbai, Friday. (PTI)

Mumbai, Apr 16 (PTI): Deepak Chahar produced a superb opening spell to help Chennai Super Kings beat Punjab Kings by six wickets to register their first victory in the 14th edition of the Indian Premier League here on Friday. After medium-pacer Chahar’s four for 13 enabled CSK to restrict the Punjab team to a below-par 106 for eight, Moeen Ali (46, 31 balls, 7x4s, 1x6) put on 66 runs for the second wicket with opener Faf du Plessis (36 not out, 33 balls, 3X4s,

1X6) to secure the win for the three-time champions. CSK finished at 107 for four in 15.4 overs with Sam Curran (5 not out) scoring the winning runs. With the target in sight, CSK lost the wickets of Suresh Raina (8) and Ambati Rayudu (0) to Mohammed Shami (2/21) in consecutive balls in the 15nth over. Ali opened up after a rather cautious start, and played some lovely drives and also hit a big six. He was holed out to Shahrukh Khan in the deep off leggie

Murugan Ashwin (1/32) with CSK needing 17 runs for victory. Arshdeep Singh provided the early breakthrough for Punjab, when he had a struggling Ruturaj Gaikwad (5) caught at deep mid-wicket. Earlier, Chahar rocked the Punjab batting line-up with a superb four-over spell during which he picked up four wickets, including that of ‘Universe Boss’ Chris Gayle. Aiming to bounce back after being outclassed by Delhi Capitals in their opening match, CSK bowl-

ers justified skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s decision to bowl first by reducing Punjab to 26 for four in the powerplay (first six overs) and then to 26 for five before M Shahrukh Khan (47 off 36, 4X4s, 2X6s) led a brief revival. Chahar started the Punjab slide in the very first over by sending back Mayank Agarwal (0) with a beauty which nipped away from middle stump to hit the off stump. Chahar kept up the pressure and increased CSK’s woes with his consistency and conceded only two fours in his four-over spell. In-form Punjab skipper K L Rahul (5) was runout by a brilliant direct hit from Ravindra Jadeja, who was fielding at short-cover, as the batsman tried to scramble for a single. Jadeja was in the act in the fifth over again, grabbing a superb catch, diving full-length to dismiss Gayle for 10 to give Chahar his second wicket. Nicholas Pooran bagged his second straight duck, pulling a short delivery straight into the hands of Shardul Thakur

at long-leg. Deepak Hooda (10), who played a blinder in Punjab’s first match against Rajasthan Royals, could not repeat his heroics, lobbing a simple catch to du Plessis as the team slipped to 26 for five in the seventh over. Tamil Nadu’s powerhitter Shahrukh Khan was the only Punjab batsman to make an impression before falling to Sam Curran in the final over as CSK was all over their opponent. Shahrukh Khan and Jhye Richardson (15, 22 balls, 2x4s) added 31 runs for the sixth wicket, in what was the best partnership of the innings. Sam Curran (1/12), Moeen Ali (1/17), Dwayne Bravo (1/10) were the other wicket-takers for CSK. B RIE F S CORE S : Punjab Kings 106/8 in 20 overs (Shahrukh Khan 47, D Chahar 4/13, D Bravo 1/10, S Curran 1/12, M Ali 1/17) lost to Chennai Super Kings 107/4 in 15.4 overs (M Ali 46, F du Plessis 36 not out, M Shami 2/21). win gold medals in Asian wrestling New Delhi, Apr 16 (Agencies): Divya Kakran emerged as the second Indian woman to secure two gold medals in the Asian wrestling championships on Friday as women wrestlers of the country bagged four gold medals in Almaty, Kazakhstan. In the continental event marred by the absence of strong countries China and Japan, three Indian women – Divya (72kg), Vinesh Phogat (53kg) and Anshu Malik (57kg) – bagged gold medals. Only Rio Olympics bronze medallist Sakshi Malik settled for silver in 65kg. A day after Sarita Mor became the first Indian woman to win two Asian titles, Divya, who had claimed the 68kg crown in New Delhi a year ago, took the gold in a depleted 72kg field consisting of just four wrestlers. Divya, who had not been in the best of form and lost the 68kg selection trials before choosing 72kg, defeated Divya Kakran Tsevegmed En-

khbayar of Mongolia 2-0 and Zhamila BakberVinesh Phogat genova of Kazakhstan 8-5. Tsevegmed and Zhamila beat Korean Sujin Park, making Divya’s road clear to take the gold medal with a fight to spare. Nevertheless, Divya defeated Sujin 2-0 in her last bout to be the deserving winner. Olympic qualified wrestler Vinesh got her maiden Asian title. She beat Otgonjargal Ganbaatar of Mongolia 11-0 and Meng Hsuan Hsieh of Chinese Taipei 12-0 in the group stage. Vinesh reached the final as her Korean opponent Hyunyoung Oh forfeited her match due to an injury. Anshu, who claimed an Olympic quota place in 57kg last week, cruised against Sevara Eshmuratova of Uzbekistan 10-0, Nazira Marsbek Kyzy of Kyrgyzstan 10-0 and Battsetseg Altantseseg of Mongolia 9-1 before overcoming Korean Shinhye Lee with a 2-2 scoreline. Anshu again beat Battsetseg 3-0 in the final to claim her first Asian gold. Sonam Malik, who also booked a spot in the Olympics in 62kg, had to forego her matches due to a knee injury.

Stokes out for 12 weeks, leaves India for surgery Arundhati reaches quarters at World C’ship

Out of IPL 2021

New Delhi, Apr 16 (IANS): England and Rajasthan Royals (RR) all-rounder Ben Stokes will fly home on Friday from India and will be out of action for 12 weeks after sustaining a finger injury. CT scan and repeat X-ray conducted on Thursday showed that Stokes has fractured his left index finger. He will have a surgery in Leeds on Monday. The injury occurred during RR’s opening match against Punjab Kings on Monday when he completed a catch in the deep to see off West Indies batsman Chris Gayle. Apart from missing the entire IPL season, Stokes is now also set to miss England’s Test series against New Zealand which starts on June 2. He had initially intended to stay with RR for the rest of the season to provide support. Stokes was already one of many England and New Zealand players who could have missed the first Test of the series had their respective IPL teams reached knockout stages of the tournament.

New Delhi, Apr 16 (IANS): Rajasthan’s Arundhati Choudhary defeated Columbian boxer Deyaneira Casas to advance into the 69kg women’s quarterfinals on the third day of the AIBA Youth Men’s and Women’s World Championships in Kielce, Poland. Arundhati, who was among the five Indian women to clinch gold at the recent Adriatic Pearl Tournament, was dominant throughout the bout as she did not allow her opponent any chance to make a comeback before completing a comfortable 5-0 win. She is now the third Indian after Vinka (60kg) and Poonam (57kg) to enter the last-8 stage at the ongoing championship. Another highlight of the day was Gitika, who sent European champion Diana Ermakova packing in the opening round of women’s 48kg category, outclassing the Russian 5-0. In the men’s section, playing in the 69kg category, Sumit progressed into the pre-quarterfinals after he defeated Rafael Perdomo of Venezuela with the referee stopping the

contest. Akash Gorkha also tamed German boxer Enrico Kliesch 5-0 in the 60kg opening round bout. Meanwhile, Vikas (52kg) and Arshi Khanam (54kg) couldn’t progress further as they suffered defeats in their respective bouts. While Vikas, who came into the match after beating European Youth Champion Yasen Radev in the last bout, lost a secondround match with a split 1-4 decision against Mongolia’s Sukhbat Enkhzorigt, Arshi fell short against Asian Junior Champion Uzbekistan’s Nigina Uktamova as she went down 1-4 in the second round. Naorem Babyrojisana Chanu (51kg), the 2019 Asian Youth champion, and silver medallist Ankit Narwal (64kg) are among the four Indians who will be seen in action on the fourth day of the World Championships.

Hardik Pandya promoted to Tokyo Olympics chief commits to Games as infections surge Grade A in BCCI annual contracts

Tokyo, Apr 16 (Reuters): Tokyo’s Olympics chief said on Friday that Japan was committed to holding a safe Games this summer, as a surge in COVID-19 cases prompted an expansion of contagion controls and with fresh calls for the Games to again be postponed or cancelled. The government expanded quasi-emergency measures to 10 regions as a fourth wave of infections spread, casting more doubt on whether the Olympics can be held in Tokyo in fewer than 100 days. “We’re not thinking of cancelling the Olympics,” Tokyo 2020 President Seiko Hashimoto said, speaking on behalf of the organising committee. “We will continue to do what we can to implement a thorough safety regimen that will make people feel complete safety.” The government added Aichi, Kanagawa, Saitama, and Chiba to six other prefectures already under contagion controls, including the cities of Tokyo and Osaka. Japan’s top health experts have acknowledged that the COVID-19 pandemic has entered a fourth wave.

Daily cases in Osaka reached a record 1,209 on Friday, driven by a virulent strain of the virus first identified in Britain. New infections in Tokyo were 729 on Thursday, the most since early February when most of the nation was under a state of emergency. Almost twothirds of Japanese said the Olympics should be cancelled or postponed, a Jiji news poll showed on Friday. A senior ruling party official said on Thursday that cancelling this year’s Olympics remains an option if the coronavirus situation becomes too dire. A scaled-back torch relay is already underway. Olympic organisers said on Friday that on the main island of Okinawa in Japan’s southernmost Okinawa prefecture they would stage the relay in restricted areas without spectators instead of on public roads. Overseas fans have been barred from the Games and officials say that domestic fans may be kept out too. read more Underscoring the difficulties of planning during the pandemic, Tokyo Olympic organisers postponed another test event, the BMX freestyle cycling scheduled for April 24-

25, because of the impact on scheduling from the COVID19 situation. Olympic and government officials have said further postponement of the Games is out of the question. But a groundswell of health experts have said it’s too risky to hold the Games this summer. Compounding the problem is Japan’s relatively slow inoculation push, which began February using imported vaccines. Japan has exhibited “poor performance” in containing virus transmission, along with limited testing capacity and a slow vaccination rollout, according to a commentary of health experts published in the British Medical Journal on Wednesday. read more “Plans to hold the Olympic and Paralympic games this summer must be reconsidered as a matter of urgency,” wrote lead author Kazuki Shimizu of the London School of Economics. “Holding Tokyo 2020 for domestic political and economic purposes--ignoring scientific and moral imperatives-is contradictory to Japan’s commitment to global health and human security.” A survey of more than 1,000 Japanese doctors last month showed that 75% believed it was better to postpone the Games, according to physician referral company Ishinotomo. Kyoto University professor Hiroshi Nishiura, an advisor to the government’s pandemic response, urged in a magazine commentary this week that authorities postpone the Olympics one year to allow for more time to vaccinate the public.
