DIMAPUR, APR 18 (NPN): In an oblique reference to withdrawal of nomination by two candidates for the recently held by-election to Aonglenden A/C and the recent merger of two NPP legislators with the NDPP, Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee (NPCC) lamented that the politics of corruption and defection has “defaced” the spirit of “Nagaland for Christ”. In a statement, NPCC president K Therie alleged that the current council of ministers did not feel guilty or ashamed in robbing every department’s development project funds. “We have a leader who believes in engineering defections by offering huge gratification to stick to the chair at all costs, including Christ. He is responsible for the sins and defacing Nagaland for Christ,” he Therie. He opined that people cannot believe that MLAs and can-

DIMAPUR, APR 18 (NPN): Department of Food & Civil Supplies (F&CS) Thursday responded to the concerns raised by the Konyak Village Councils’ Union (KVCU) with regard to compulsory seeding of Aadhaar with ration cards. In a letter addressed to the KVSU president, the F&CS director Asangla Imti pointed out that the Centre had directed the States to link Aadhaar numbers with the ration card(s). F&CS director also stated that several other directives from the government insisted on requirement of Aadhaar enrolment under National Food Security Act (NFSA). Further, the director stated that the department has been implementing “End-to-End computisation of TPDS operations” in the state since 2013 as per the Supreme Court order, which directed the States/UTs to link Aadhaar number with beneficiaries’ data in order to detect bogus/ghost ration card(s). Accordingly, the director said the department has done 100% digitization of the NFSA beneficiaries and launched online allocation of food grains till the FPS in the state followed by launching of Supply Chain Management in Dimapur district. Asangla Imti pointed out that the ministry has designed the online NIC-CAS (Common Application Software) for compulsory seeding of Aadhaar with the beneficiaries’ data. In response to KVCU’s another concern that coverage of Aadhaar capturing in Mon district was very poor, the F&CS director stated that the department had requested the Commissioner Nagaland to ad(Cont’d on p-7) dress Aadhaar related issues. didates have defected without accepting money and risk disqualification and loss of future. He referred to social media where it was being alleged that the MLAs were paid Rs 5 crore each with promise of portfolios. Stating that defectors were worst as they sell their faithful followers along with their mandate, Therie called them as “mass human traffickers” for the buyer as they have certain voters behind them. He said those who sold themselves have not only finished their personal future, but also sold their soul, spirit and faith. Therie also said the defectors were bereft of moral, principles, ideas and vision in life without any plan for their people as they cannot see the future. He warned that anyone cooperating and supporting defectors will suffer the same fate before God.

NEW DELHI, APR 18 (AGENCIES): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday hit out at Congress president Rahul Gandhi, saying he is not contesting from Wayanad Lok Sabha constituency to Narendra Modi send a message to the South, but he is doing so for “appeasement politics”. “Congress’ Naamdaar says he is contesting from Wayanad because he wanted to send a message to South. Couldn’t you contest from Trivandrum to give the message? It’s the capital. It’s not a message to South but a message of appeasement politics,” PM Modi said while addressing a public rally in Kerala’s Thiruvananthapuram. Modi accused Rahul Gandhi of pretending to side against the Communist Party of India (Marxist) in Kerala, while secretly befriending the party in Delhi. The PM alleged Rahul Gandhi is doing so only to secure his place in Parliament. “Congress president had to come to Wayanad here to secure his place in Parliament. He says he won’t speak a word against CPI(M). Kerala main kushti aur Delhi main dosti, yahi inka khel hai,” PM Modi stated. “The faith and affection towards the BJP and me has only increased over time. Today I am here to seek your blessings so that we continue to convert your faith and affection to record development,” PM Narendra Modi said.

Congress president Rahul Gandhi on Thursday took a jibe at Prime Minister Narendra Modi saying “there’s a clear link between national and livelihood security and the aspirations of youngsters and farmers; Rahul Gandhi PM Modi is missing it completely.” In interview with The Hindu, Rahul Gandhi said that the BJP has sought to divert the narrative of this election by making national security their key election narrative. “But this has failed to fire as people will not be fooled: the fact is that the biggest national security issue is unemployment. And the other big livelihood and national security problem for India is the huge rural distress and the state of our farmers,” he added. Rahul stated that the Congress manifesto has set down a framework to draw India out of the mess that Modi’s policies have created. “Compare it with the BJP manifesto, which doesn’t even talk of jobs or the issues that matter to the people of India,” he stated. “We have the highest unemployment rate in the last 45 years, but Modi doesn’t have a word to say about it!,” he said. Reacting to Prime Minister’s speech of a “dumdaar sarkar”, Rahul said: “If you want a dumdaar sarkar, you need to first employ India’s youth and give them opportunities to reshape their future and simultaneously rewrite India’s future. Only then will India become a powerful country.”

DIMAPUR, APR 18 (NPN): Chakhroma GBs’ Union (CGBU) has expressed concern over, what it said was, non-adherence to specifications at some places in the ongoing four-lane road construction along Purana Bazaar-Chümoukedima stretch. Activist asks court, EC to bar Sadhvi

Mumbai/New Delhi, Apr 18 (PTI): A Malegaon blast victim’s father and a political activist Thursday moved the special NIA court and the Election Commission respectively seeking barring of prime accused Sadhvi Pragya Singh Thakur from contesting the Lok Sabha polls, a day after the BJP fielded her from Bhopal. The BJP, meanwhile, said it will contest the polls in Bhopal in Madhya Pradesh as a fight against the alleged “conspiracy” by the Congress to defame Hindu religion by linking it to terrorism. The application before the National Investigation Agency(NIA) court in Mumbai was filed by Nisar Sayeed, who lost his son in the blast in 2008. Special judge V S Padalkar sought replies from both the NIA and Thakur and posted the matter for Monday. The applicant pleaded that Thakur, who is out on bail, be asked to attend court proceedings in Mumbai and be barred from contesting the election as the trial is in progress. Thakur has spent nine years in jail and is out on bail since 2017 on health grounds. If Thakur was “healthy

Pragya Singh Thakur (File) enough to fight elections in the crippling summer heat”, then she has misled the court, Sayeed alleged. A petition seeking cancellation of her bail is pending before the Supreme Court, the applicant said. Six people were killed and over 100 injured in a bomb blast at Malegaon, a communally-sensitive textile town in north Maharashtra, on September 29, 2008. The Maharashtra AntiTerrorism Squad(ATS) arrested Thakur and others in the case, alleging they were part of a Hindu extremist group which carried out the blast. The NIA later gave Thakur a clean chit, but the court did not discharge her. It dropped charges against her under the stringent Maharashtra Control

of Organised Crime Act, but she is still facing trial under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act and Indian Penal Code sections. In a letter to the Election Commission, Poonawalla said the Maharashtra AntiTerrorism Squad (ATS) had found Thakur to be the “principal conspirator” in the Malegaon blast. Her name has also cropped up in the Ajmer Dargah blast case, he said. “I would humbly request the Election Commission of India to take further necessary steps to uphold the Model Code of Conduct 2019 and take appropriate action against Sadhvi Pragya Singh Thakur and debar her from contesting elections,” the letter said. He said in his letter that “a candidate accused

with terror links must not be permitted to contest elections.” She also stands accused of “murder, attempt to murder, criminal conspiracy, and of promoting enmity between different groups on ground of religion”, said Poonawalla, who is known for his proximity with the Congress. However, as per the law, any citizen above 25 years of age is eligible to contest polls unless convicted for any crime that entails punishment for two years or more. Calling Thakur an innocent person, BJP spokesperson G V L Narasimha Rao said she was tortured and asked opposition parties what problem they had if the BJP has fielded her as its candidate. “We are contesting this election in Bhopal as a fight against the Congress conspiracy to insult Hindu religion by linking it to terrorism. Digvijay Singh was the face of this conspiracy,” Rao told reporters in Delhi. Singh is the Congress candidate from the seat. Rao alleged that Congress president Rahul Gandhi had “masterminded” this conspiracy, claiming that it was meant to appease a minority community.

Maharashtra voter smashes EVM AKOLA (MAHARASHTRA), APR 18 (IANS): A voter on Thursday smashed the electronic voting machine (EVM) while casting his vote in Akola Lok Sabha constituency in Maharashtra. The incident occurred at around 1 p.m. at the Balapur polling station no. 29 where polling was underway for the second phase of elections in 10 Lok Sabha seats in the state, said an Election Commission official. The voter, Shrikrishna Ghyare, was taken into custody. The motive behind the action was not immediately known, police said. On the fate of the votes already cast, the EC official explained that the Ghyare had only broken the ballotting unit (BU). The control unit (CU) or the VVPAT which were stationed a feet away with the election officials were safe. “We have the complete record of the votes cast earlier in that EVM. There is no problem on that count,” an EC official explained. The authorities arranged for an alternative BU which was attached to the existing CU and VVPAT, and the voting was resumed shortly thereafter.

‘People will vote for Modi again’ S HI M LA , APR 1 8 ( IA N S ) : H i m a c h a l Pradesh Chief Minister Jai Ram Thakur on Thursday said people have made up their mind that once again the reins of the nation should be handed over to Prime Minister Narendra Modi.. Thakur said in a statement that in five years, there has been remarkable development in the country. “Efforts in the social and economic upliftment

has not only created a new India but the country’s prestige has also increased all over the world,” he said. Developmental and welfare schemes started during the last five years by the Central government have benefited every section of society, the Chief Minister added. Cong questions EC on suspension of officer checking Modi’s chopper NEW DELHI, APR 18 (IANS): Senior Congress leader and Rajya Sabha MP Ahmed Patel on Thursday asked the Election Commission (EC) why did it suspend a General Observer for allegedly checking Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s helicopter in Odisha’s Sambalpur on Tuesday. “There have been instances where during polls the EC was allowed to check convoys of both current and former Congress Presidents. The Special Protection Group (SPG) protectees can’t be frisked personally. “Why suspend an officer for checking PM’s chopper? What message is being sent? Law is special for some,” Patel tweeted. “The question is simple. If SPG protectees of the Congress party can be subjected to inspection, why

is the same not applicable to the BJP,” he asked. The EC on Wednesday suspended General Observer Mohammed Mohsin for allegedly checking Modi’s helicopter in Odisha’s Sambalpur on Tuesday. The poll panel said that Mohsin had acted contrary to the instructions of the EC concerning the SPG pro-

tectees. A Karnataka cadre officer of the Indian Administrative Service (IAS), Mohsin was deputed as a General Observer working under the supervision of the poll panel in Odisha. Modi had visited Odisha on Tuesday where he addressed two election rallies in Sambalpur and Bhubaneswar.

Farmers’ budget to declare MSP in advance, says Rahul VANTHLI (GUJ), APR 18 (PTI): Congress president Rahul Gandhi said Thursday that Minimum Support Prices (MSP) would also be announced in the separate farmers’ budget which his party’s manifesto has promised. Addressing a campaign rally at Vanthli in Junagadh district, he also accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of applying different rules to the rich and the poor. “If the Congress comes to power, the country will have two budgets. One will be national budget and another farmers’ budget. “In the farmers’ budget we will announce MSP for various crops in advance so that farmers know what they will get. We will (also) announce the amount of insur-

Rahul Gandhi (File) ance (premium) payable (by farmers) and what the would farmers get,” he said. The Modi government was ready to waive loans of rich industrialists but not those of farmers, he said. “We will not allow

formation of two Indias. If we have one flag, then we should have one nation. If Ambani gets justice, farmers should also get justice,” Gandhi said. If big industrialists defaulted on repayment of loan, they are not jailed, but if a poor farmer is unable to pay an instalment, he is put behind bars, the Congress chief said. Gandhi also claimed that his party’s ambitious `Nyay’ minimum income guarantee scheme under which poor families will get Rs 72,000 per year will not harm the economy, but instead help it grow.

The crucifixion of Jesus Christ is a topic that evokes deep reverence, empathy and awe among Christians throughout the world. Christ died on the Cross at Calvary because He confronted sin instead of compromising with it. The cross means victory of confrontation over sin. It also means being crucified with Christ and the old worldly self and resurrection of the new life in Christ. Christ made the cross the living symbol of real hope. However, for the Romans it represented everything that was shameful and contemptible. It was a sign of weakness, defeat and death. Christ bore all the shame and death to rise again and that is why for Paul it was glory for through it man, woman attain salvation. Churches today face a crisis of the cross, as the confrontational aspects of the cross are completely ignored. The cross was far more than an instrument of capital punishment. It was a public symbol of indecency and social indignity. Crucifixion was designed to do more than merely kill a man. Its purpose was to humiliate him as well. The cross was intended not only to break a man’s body, but also to crush and defame his spirit. There were certainly more efficient means of execution: stoning (cf. Stephen in Acts 7), decapitation (cf. James in Acts 12), etc. The Jewish priests and religious leaders demanded Crucifixion as an instrument to humiliate Christ and harm Him bodily. Churches the world over, observe Good Friday in either of the three ways- a historical reconstruction of the pattern of roots of worship as recorded in the bible; the funeral pattern to remind believers of the pathos of Jesus’ suffering and death and the third, the importance of the cross for Christian doctrine on how Jesus’ death fulfills the Old Testament prophecy for atonement. For without the crucifixion and resurrection of Christ, Christian faith would cease to have the essence of being God’s divine plan for the salvation of humankind. It would be just like any other religion that teaches about moral and ethical values and not understanding about God’s divine plan for atonement. The birth, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ is the basis of the belief for Christians, while for secularists, it is also a historical fact which was testified by one undeniable secular source, the Roman historian Tacitus (55-120 A.D.) He who wrote that the “founder of this sect (the Christians) was executed during the reign of (emperor) Tiberius by the Governor Pontius Pilate” (Tacitus, annals XV).His crucifixion was a triumph of faith over feeling and His resurrection, the reward of eternal life that believers will receive because one man chose to exchange His life for their death penalty. For Apostle Paul, the cross was God’s power; for He loved the world and chose not to condemn His creation but chose to go to the depths to save them. The cross is not a mere symbol but the sign of God ’s love. It is a sign of God’s power over death. Its history, pathos and message rekindle believers about the glory of God’s power.

DailyDevotion Readiness God called to him….And he said, “Here I am.” —Exodus 3:4 When God speaks, many of us are like people in a fog, and we give no answer. Moses’ reply to God revealed that he knew where he was and that he was ready. Readiness means having a right relationship to God and having the knowledge of where we are. We are so busy telling God where we would like to go. Yet the man or woman who is ready for God and His work is the one who receives the prize when the summons comes. We wait with the idea that some great opportunity or something sensational will be coming our way, and when it does come we are quick to cry out, “Here I am.” Whenever we sense that Jesus Christ is rising up to take authority over some great task, we are there, but we are not ready for some obscure duty. Readiness for God means that we are prepared to do the smallest thing or the largest thing— it makes no difference. It means we have no choice in what we want to do, but that whatever God’s plans may be, we are there and ready. Whenever any duty presents itself, we hear God’s voice as our Lord heard His Father’s voice, and we are ready for it with the total readiness of our love for Him. Jesus Christ expects to do with us just as His Father did with Him. He can put us wherever He wants, in pleasant duties or in menial ones, because our union with Him is the same as His union with the Father. “…that they may be one just as We are one…” (John 17:22). Be ready for the sudden surprise visits of God. A ready person never needs to get ready— he is ready. Think of the time we waste trying to get ready once God has called! The burning bush is a symbol of everything that surrounds the person who is ready, and it is on fire with the presence of God Himself.

Post-mortem

Foolishness of the cross for worldly lover Easter: Breaking news vs fake news!

“C

ross” is sacrificing one’s life for others in love. It is denying oneself, self-emptying oneself for the good of all. Why is the cross foolish for those who claim themselves wise people? Why is the cross foolish for those who love to be in power? enjoy richness? Why is there violence in the world? Why are there scarcities amidst affluence in our society? Diversity in Corinth city: Today we cannot imagine a modern city without the presence different races, tribes, classes, castes, linguistic groups, religions and cultures. They have to co-existtogether. Like in today’s metro cities, the ancient Greek city of Corinth,a beautiful city, wasinhabited by different kinds of people – Jewish, Romans, Greeks, Barbarians and many others. Many wars fought there and ruled by different emperors in different stages of history. Their cultures were different and professed different religions. The city had many templesincluding Jewish synagogues and a church started by St. Paul;the members were small compared to adherents of other faiths. The city was characterized by diversity. Economically, it was a fast growing commercial city and business was flourishing. There was a harbor. The city was connected to many cities both by sea and roads. In this city, there were many successful business people. There were also many poor people, immigrants, homeless, uneducated people, bad and selfish people. The city faced many conflicts and immorality was rampant. How can Christians be the salt of the earth, true peace makers? How can the people of Corinth coexist in harmony? Paul answer to the Corinthian Christian was very simple: Bear the cross one another. The cross is foolishfor two kinds of people, but he urged Christiansnotto follow them because Christian are redeemed by the blood of Jesus Christ. Why is the cross foolish? For “I” centred individualistic people, the cross is foolish: The first kind of people was individualistic or`I’ centred people (In our context we may refer to as clan centred or village centred or constituency centred

I

I Cor. 1: 18-25 people). Those people used to do things only fortheir self-benefits. They never think of others. Such persons thought that they are the only wise people. Their religious and cultural practices are the only right ones. Others are inferior, demonic and need to be conquered and replaced. They always wanted to be in powerand rule over others through manipulation. To be in power and gain economic benefit they would anything. Such people do not have any concept of common ethical value except their individual and family interest.Because of their never ending desires and consciousness of self-fame and glory, theybecame jealous if they see someone successful in life. They felt happy when someone faced difficulty. We see such people in our office, church and society. It is very surprising see that some selfcentred people treat the church and institution like their private property. The church and institution are used for their own benefit and selfish gain. Some people even do not want to accept leadership from other village, tribe and racial groups in our churches and Christian institutions. For such people, the cross is foolish because cross represents sacrifice, sharing in love for all. For them, suffering, dying and sacrificing for others is totally foolish. Many Nagas have the same individualistic attitude. For racial people, the cross is foolish: The second group of people was racial centred people (in our context, we may refer to tribe or caste centred people)The city of Corinth was inhabited by three major racial groups - Romans, Barbarian, Greeks - and other smaller groups. The professed different religions, followed cultural practices, and spoke different languages. There was conflict and competitions among them. Those racial minded people would do anything bad for the benefit of their race. They could not see the world beyond their little racial group just like many Nagas today. To protect their interest of their racial group, they would go even upto the extent of extermination. They hatedand condemned other racial groups, religious and cultural practices. Other

racial groups were seen as their enemies. They also did not believe in diversities of God’s gifts. Everything that is different from their race was seen as inferior, demonic, enemy and condemned. For the racial mindset people, the cross is totally foolish; it is foolish to suffer one’s lives for the good of other races. Only foolish people will sacrificetheir privilege, power, comfort and wealth. The cross is foolishfor those “my race” centred people, because it signifies the supreme sacrifice for the others. The cross is in God’s love in action for the good of all. The Nagas, both the leaders and general public have the same racial attitude. “I” and “my race/community” centred people are the problem today: To protect their selfish interest, such people falsely propagate cultural and religious conservatism and exclusivism. We hear slogans like “India is Hindu country”, “Cow is sacred (as divine)” “Nagaland is Christian State” “Islam is superior religion” etc. All these are false claims and exposes of ignorance of Indian history and cultural traditions. It is not only in India, governments in Eastern Europe, US, Philippines, Russia, Nigeria, and many countries in Latin America have captured political power by the rightwing populist politicians in recent years. All those populist political leaders are advocating similarideology of “I” and “My race” branding other communities as killers, criminals, drug pushers and demonizing other religious practices. We hear them speaking racist, sexist and exclusivist language. To protect their interest such racial minded people will invent all kinds of lies and manipulate all social and religious fabric. We see denial of diversity, freedom of speech and violation of human rights. Even in the democratic countries dictatorship has coming back. It is a threat for future humanity. The assertion that my religion is superior, our race and culture is superior, my interest is first, have resulted terrible bloodshed in history. (To be concluded) Rev. Dr. Wati Longchar, Taiwan, (wlongchar@gmail.com)

T

he angel’s declaration to the women on Christ’s resurrection (Mt. 28: 6) was a piece of veritable Breaking News! Mary Magdalene, James’ mother Mary, and Salome had gone to the tomb, just to anoint Christ’s lifeless body with spices, not to meet the resurrected Jesus. The angel further added, “Go quickly now, and tell his disciples He has been raised from death, and now he is going to Galilee ahead of you; there you will see him!” (Mt. 28: 7). As the women considered the announcement with mixed emotions of fear and joy, Jesus himself appeared to them and said, “Do not be afraid. Go and tell my brothers to go to Galilee, and there they will see me” (Mt. 28: 10). In Greco-Roman culture, a woman’s testimony was not admissible in court. And in the Jewish milieu two women’s witness was valued as just one man’s testimony. Whatever might be the feedback, the women ran to tell his disciples (Mt. 28: 8). Some of the apostles considered the women’s information as sheer nonsense (Lk. 24: 11). But Peter and John, after having done some reality check, began to marvel at what they saw in the empty grave. And then Jesus himself began appearing to many persons. On the other hand, when the Roman guards reported to the chief priests whatever had happened at the tomb of Christ, the latter began fabricating the biggest ever fake news! The Jewish chief priests and elders bribed the soldiers saying, “You are to tell that his disciples came during the night and stole his body while you were asleep.” They even assured that they themselves would tackle the Roman Governor (Mt. 28: 13-14) and prevent him from awarding them the surest and heaviest penalty – death by crucifixion - for their dereliction of duty! The fake news did spread among the Jews (Mt. 28: 15) and lingers on till date. But what succeeded most was the undeniable truth of Christ’s resurrection. It transformed the early disciples: (1) the unbelieving James became a believer after Christ’s appearance to him (1 Corinthians 15:3-9) and (2) Paul, a staunch persecutor of the Church, became the greatest propagator of Christianity after encountering the risen Christ . The early believers in Christ’s resurrection were ready to die for Jesus: Stephen died by stoning (Acts 7:54-60), James of Zebedee died by

the sword at the hands of Herod (Acts 12:2), James the brother of Jesus died (Josephus, Antiquities XX.200). Peter and Paul died at the hands of Nero (Eusebius, Church History XXV.5). Their example would be followed by countless number of believers in Christ’s resurrection. Some non-Christian writers too refer to Jesus and his resurrection: Josephus Flavius (Josephus, Antiquities XX.9.1), Tacitus (Tacitus, Annals XV) and Suetonius (Suetonius, Lives of the CaesarsClaudius 25 and Suetonius, Lives of the Caesars-Nero 16), the Babylonian Talmud. a compilation of fifth-century Jewish writings called the “ToledothJeshu” etc. Some material proofs of Christ’s resurrection are the following: (a) the broken seal that had securely linked the large stone to the tomb’s door, (b) the empty tomb, (c) the large stone lying apart from the grave’s opening, (d) the grave clothes found lying in the tomb in the form of Christ’s body. But the strongest evidence is provided by the over 500 witnesses who had personally met the resurrected Christ. And the number of believers in Christ’s resurrection became countless throughout the history of Christianity. They bore witness and continue to do so even today through their courageous suffering and death for their faith. John R. W. Scott affirms, “Christianity is in its very essence a resurrection religion. The concept of resurrection lies at its heart. If you remove it, Christianity is destroyed.” The resurrection of Christ is an undeniable fact. Professor Thomas Arnold, author of the famous, History of Rome, says, “I have been used for many years to study the histories of other times, and to examine and weigh the evidence of those who have written about them, and I know of no one fact in the history of mankind which is proved by better and fuller evidence of every sort, to the understanding of a fair inquirer, than the great sign which God hath given us that Christ died and rose again from the dead.” Brooke Foss Westcott, an English scholar, says, “raking all the evidence together, it is not too much to say that there is no historic incident better or more variously supported than the resurrection of Christ.” Jonas Kerkettasdb, Bosco College of Teacher Education, Dimapur, (frjonassdb@gmail.com)

Glory of the Cross of Jesus

n this Holy Week tens of thousands of faithful as well as average Christians all over the world will be flocking to churches and cathedrals to bow their heads before the Cross and participate in worship services that relive the death and the resurrection of the Messiah on Good Friday and Easter Sunday. Many worshipers will pick up the most loving divine hymn with adoration-”When I survey the wondrous Cross, on which the Prince of Glory died, My riches gain I count but loss, And pour contempt on all my pride,... Love so amazing, So divine, Demand my soul, My life, My all,” The climax of Jesus’ life on earth was the Cross. Cross was the glory of life and the way to the glory of eternity. The majesty of Jesus appeared only in His crucifixion and death. With Jesus on the cross, the cross appeared beautiful, majestic and had amazing spiritual gravitational pull. He glorified God on the cross by perfect submission of perfect love. The cross was not the end. There was resurrection to follow. It was the proof that men could do their sadistic brutality but not all their worst could conquer Him. Cross, an image of ultimate horror turned into the paramount icon of love. Love gave eyes to read the signs and a mind to spiritual understanding. Love is the great interpreter. Love can grasp the truth while intellect becomes uncertain.

The cross is the centre of Christianity. Christian faith and hope revolve around the cross. This is also the key to spiritual patriotism. The gospels of the New Testament were not to give a full account of the life of Jesus but appeals to take Him as Saviour and Son God. The gospel is meant for man and women seeking divinity of God. The cross stands for the truth. The truth cannot be buried for long. It will surely come out for the world to see. Jesus is the truth and the truth will make you free, says the Bible. The cross is the centre of attraction that drew every human character to Him in a way that even before His crucifixion had ever donerulers, leaders, administrators, cowards, criminals, extortionists, wavers, etc. The Centurion at the foot of the cross left saying, “truly, this is the Son of God.” The name Barabbas is interesting. He was a terrorist and a secessionist for the Romans. He was a hero and a freedom fighter for the Jews. Because of popular demand from the Jews he was freed. His place was taken by Jesus. No doubt, Barabbas was a sinner. Roman Governor Pilate was a weakling. He could not withstand the illegal pressure tactics of the Jews. He vacillated to crucify Jesus or let Him go. Later, he surrendered before the demand of the Jews. But the same Pilate was adamant over the removal

of the inscription on the cross-”Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews.” He was stubborn over the matter of no importance and not wise over the delivery of wrong judgment of supreme importance. One of the criminals who crucified along with the dying Jesus recognised Him as the Saviour, was instantly given a place in Paradise. Joseph from Arimathaea and Nicodemus were men of authority. They were secret disciples of Jesus only because they were afraid of their own Jewish community. But the death of Jesus on the cross emboldened them to face the truth. Joseph managed to bring the death body of Jesus from the Governor Pilate for burial and Nicodemus was there to do the befitting tribute that the world could see. The cross made them cast their fear aside. The power of cross had begun to operate. It turned cowards into heroes and waverers into spirited fighters to carry His mission dead or alive Mary Magdalena was the first to visit the tomb of Jesus and the first to see the Risen Christ when all other Disciples were hiding in fear of being persecuted. She was fearless and her love and devotion to Jesus was extra ordinary. She in reality was empowered to become a great evangelist. Her encounter with the Risen Christ is crucial for every Christian today. Peter with all his weak-

nesses and even open denial of Jesus on the crucial moment before crucifixion, did not desert Jesus. There was something outstanding about him-the moral strength. It was to him that Mary Magdalena first went to break the news of the Empty Tomb. Peter was still the acknowledged leader of the apostolic band. Appearance of Risen Christ before His disciples on several occasion and their empowerment by Holy Spirit emboldened them to get rid of their fearful concealment. They became spiritual patriots and warriors of Jesus. People love to see God fearing leaders. Christian leaders/ law makers/ legislators have clear obligations to oppose any law that attack human life and its rightful existence. But today, they are in miserable position. They are struggling with contradictions between the spiritual teachings and what they practice. They struggle with different feelings and different issues at different times but they cannot come out of the warning against the soul-less materialism. But, “what does it profit, my brethren, if a man says he has faith but has not works? So faith by itself, if it has no works, is dead,” says the Bible, James 2: 14-17. Many conflicting issues and factionalism can be settled peacefully with the spirit of the Cross. “Forgiveness is the attribute of the strong.” The glory of cross will work best where there is respect for the opin-

ion of others and freedom to practice one’s own belief. Society based on such principles will integrate rather than disintegrate. Each generation has to work hard and make sacrifices to ensure better life for the next generation. We need to progress. To progress we need an environment of peace, unity and hope. Any action that brings division across communities will not help this cause. We need performing leaders in both religious as well as in secular fronts and the leaders must have the courage and conviction to send message

of hope, tolerance, honesty, love and affection to the people through their action. Through faith can transform a nation and heal the scars of division among people. Let the glory of the cross of Christ be the flag bearer to remove all the negative aspects of our factionridden society. In this Holy Week let this Hymn be our revival prayer: “Let the water and the blood, From thy wounded side which flowed, Be of sin the double cure, Save from wrath and make me pure.” Mapu Jamir I.A.S (Retd), Duncan, Dimapur

Reader’s Post Sir,

Appeal to DoSE

I would like to share problems regularly faced by the candidates in most of the departmental exams. Some exams allot 3hours time where answers can be completed in a mere 1hour 30 mts while others allot 2hours where if all questions answered usually takes more than 3 hours. After going through the syllabus for the written exam which includes 60 MCQ’s and 90 marks allotted for Essay Writing, Comprehension, Precis Writing, Letter Writing and Grammar with allotted time period being 1hour 30 minutes which all set and attempted, I believe will be a huge time restrain for the candidates. Exams Questions papers along with the time allotted must correlate giving an ideal competitive candidate enough time to answer all the questions in the given set of time. So it is my humble request to the concern exam board members to kindly look into the matter and be more practical while the questions papers are being set. This is an appeal in regard to LDA-cum-computer assistant recruitment. Nokten, Dimapur, (nagatracking@gmail.com)

India suspends cross-LoC trade

India suspends LoC trade citing ‘Terror’ activities.

bonafide trade takes place, for the benefit of the people of Jammu and Kashmir, through this mechanism,” it added. The MHA, in a statement here, said that during the ongoing investigations of certain cases by the National Investigation Agency (NIA), “it has been brought out that a significant number of trading concerns engaged in LoC trade are being operated by persons closely associated with banned terrorist organisations involved in fuelling terrorism/separatism”. “It has, therefore, been decided by the government to suspend the LoC trade at Salamabad and Chakkanda-Bagh in Jammu and Kashmir with immediate effect.”

The cross-LoC trading mechanism was launched in October 2008 as a major confidence-building measure between India and Pakistan. The mechanism, meant to facilitate exchange of goods of common use between local populations across the LoC in Jammu and Kashmir on the basis of barter system and zero duty, is allowed four days a week through the two trade facilitation centres - Salamabad in Baramulla district and Chakkan-da-Bagh in Poonch district. In the statement, the MHA said that the probe conducted by the NIA “revealed that some individuals, who have crossed over to Pakistan and joined militant organisations, have

opened trading firms there and these were under the control of militant organisations and were engaged in the LoC trade”. “Reports have been received that the LoC trade is being misused on very large scale. It has been revealed that the trade has changed its character to mostly third party trade and products from other regions, including foreign countries, are finding their way through this route,” the statement said. “Unscrupulous and anti-national elements are using the route as a conduit for hawala money, drugs and weapons, under the garb of this trade,” it added. Noting that India had withdrawn the MFN status to Pakistan after the Pulwama terror attack, it said the latest action has been taken after inputs that “in order to evade the consequent higher duty, LoC trade is likely to be misused to a much larger extent”. “A stricter regulatory and enforcement mechanism is being worked out and will be put in place in consultation with various agencies”, it said, adding the issue of reopening of the cross-LoC trade will be revisited thereafter.

F&CS director clarified that Aadhaar seeding was primarily done to cleanse of non-existent beneficiaries, all beneficiaries claiming the benefits more than once and all beneficiaries claiming benefits in the names of others. Asserting that the department was implementing the directions of the Centre, the F&CS director said this exercise was purely done to ensure that the department has a robust and clean database.

Defectors defaced the spirit of Christianity: NPCC president (From p-1) Referring to speculations that the defectors will not be disqualified by the speaker, Therie wondered whether it meant that 10th Schedule and rules have become invalid. He reminded that that the President, governor and speaker were all bound by law and in particular, the house speaker cannot have the final say on the matter. Therie reminded about Good Friday where Jesus died for the sinners and urged Nagaland Christians not to follow the Achan way of life and fate. He said Jesus forgave the woman after she confessed and repented after which Christ asked her not to repeat. He said let Achan be stoned to death but not his livestock together with him.

New Delhi, April 18 (IANS): India on Thursday announced suspension of trade across the Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu and Kashmir from Friday, saying it is being misused by Pakistan-based elements to send weapons and illegal currency to fuel terrorism and separatism in this country. The gover nment said the decision, taken more than a month after withdrawing the Most Favoured Nation (MFN) status granted to Pakistan, will be revisited after stricter regulatory mechanisms are put in place to ensure that “only bonafide trade” takes place, benefitting the people of Jammu and Kashmir. “The government of India has received reports that cross-LoC trade routes in Jammu and Kashmir are being misused by Pakistanbased elements. This misuse involves illegal inflows of weapons, narcotics and currency,” an order issued by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) said. “The LoC trade mechanism is therefore being suspended pending the putting into place of a stricter regulatory regime. Mumbai, Apr 18 (IANS): Global payments major Mastercard on Thursday said it is committed to empowering 10 million merchants across India with digital payments acceptance capabilities by 2020. Currently, about five million merchants across the country are equipped to accept digital payments, the company said during REACH-Mastercard Acceptance Summit 2019 here. “Merchants are an important element of India’s digital economy,” said Rajeev Kumar, Senior Vice President, Market Development, South Asia, Mastercard. The commitment to increase digital payments acceptance among merchants requires three critical things - education and awareness, development of low cost acceptance solutions, and merchant on-boarding through accelerator programmes. Mastercard said it was partnering with fintech companies, payments facilitators, industry bodies, acquirers and regulators for the purpose. The company is also working in collaboration with various banks to expand the acceptance network, Mastercard said, adding that its partnership with RBL Bank has added over 500,000 merchant acceptance or Point-of-Sale (PoS) locations since demonetisation in November 2016.

Private consumption has been weakening as reflected in deceleration in the growth of passenger car sales and domestic air passenger traffic, weak performance of consumer durables and non-durables, and continuing contraction in non-oil non-gold imports. Das further said investment demand was losing traction and a deceleration in exports may further impact investment activity. “With the inflation outlook looking benign and headline inflation expected to remain below target in the current year, it becomes necessary to address the challenges to sustained growth of the Indian economy. “Hence, I vote for reducing the policy repo rate by 25 basis points,” Das had said, according to the minutes. During the meeting, the Governor also said the RBI will continue to watch the evolving growth and inflation dynamics and act in time and act decisively while ensuring price stability on an enduring basis in pursuance of its mandate under the RBI Act.

Mumbai, Apr 18 (PTI): Weakening of domestic growth impulses and global slowdown prompted RBI Gover nor Shaktikanta Das to vote for a 25 basis points cut in interest rate announced earlier this month, minutes of the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) meeting showed Thursday. However, his deputy Viral Acharya had favoured status quo in the key lending rate (repo), arguing that the Reserve Bank should wait for “some more time” for additional data before taking call on reduction in rate. Another external expert on the six-member MPC Chetan Ghate too had voted against reduction in the repo rate. Four of the six MPC members had voted in favour of a 25 basis points reduction in the policy rate. On April 4, the RBI had reduced the repo rate, or the rate at which it lend to banks, by 25 basis points to 6 per cent -- the lowest level in one year -- on softening inflation. It was the second rate cut in a row. The central bank, however, kept monetary policy stance ‘neutral’ over uncertainty over monsoon. Replace Pompeo from talks: N Korea tells US

Seoul, Apr 18 (Agencies): North Korea said Thursday that it had testfired a new type of “tactical guided weapon,” its first such test in nearly half a year, and demanded that Washington remove Secretary of State Mike Pompeo from nuclear negotiations. According to AP, the test, which didn’t appear to be of a banned mid- or longrange ballistic missile that could scuttle negotiations, allows North Korea to show its people it is pushing ahead with weapons development while also reassuring domestic military officials worried that diplomacy with Washington signals weakness. Separately, the North Korean Foreign Ministry accused Pompeo of playing down the significance of comments by leader Kim Jong Un, who said last week that Washington has until the end of the year to offer mutually acceptable terms for an agreement to salvage the high-stakes nuclear diplomacy. In a statement issued under the name of Kwon Jong Gun, director general of the American Affairs Department at the Foreign Ministry, North Korea accused Pompeo of “talking nonsense” and misrepresenting Kim’s comments. During a speech at Texas A&M on Monday, Pompeo said Kim promised to denuclearize during his first summit with President Donald Trump and that U.S. officials were working with the North Koreans to “chart a path forward so we

can get there.” “He (Kim) said he wanted it done by the end of the year,” Pompeo said. “I’d love to see that done sooner.” The North Korean statement said Pompeo was “misrepresenting the meaning of our requirement” for the negotiations to be finalized by the year’s end, and referred to his “talented skill of fabricating stories.” It said Pompeo’s continued participation in the negotiations would ensure that the talks become “entangled” and called for a different counterpart who is “more careful and mature in communicating with us.” In a speech at his rubber-stamp

Gunmen kill 14 bus passengers in Pak

Islamabad, Apr 18 (IANS): At least 14 passengers including 11 security personnel were forcibly offloaded from a bus on a highway in Pakistan’s Balochistan province and then shot dead by unidentified gunmen on Thursday, officials said. The deceased included nine personnel from Pakistan Navy, one from Pakistan Coast Guard and one from Pakistan Air Force, whereas identities of the remaining three victims were not determined yet, security officials were cited as saying by Xinhua news agency. The incident happened when five buses, travelling between Karachi and Gwadar on the Makran Coastal highway, carrying civilians and the victims were stopped by some 20-25 militants wearing Frontier Corps uniforms to check identity cards of the passengers. After scanning the identities of passengers in one of the buses in Buzi Top area, the militants offloaded 16 of them.

Fourteen of them were shot dead, while two passengers -- reportedly soldiers of the Pakistan Army -- escaped, according to Pakistan media reports. After reaching a “safe” place, these soldiers informed security forces about the whole incident who rushed to the incident site and recovered 14 bodies, officials added. Confirming the incident, a Pakistan Navy spokesperson said that several Navy personnel were among those killed. Proscribed organization Baloch Raji Ajoi Sangar claimed the attack on their unverified Twitter account, saying that their offensives against the security forces will further intensify, Xinhua news agency said. Provincial Home Minister Mir Zia Langov said a full-scale investigation was launched into the attack and to track down the gunmen. “Such incidents are intolerable and we will not spare the terrorists who carried out this dastardly attack,” he said.

Pak PM axes FM amid IMF talks Islamabad, Apr 18 (IANS): Pakistan Finance Minister Asad Umar was removed on Thursday amid a wave of criticism over the government’s handling of the financial crisis the country is facing. The change in the Finance Ministry comes at a time when Pakistan is in the middle of negotiating a new relief package with the International Monetary Fund (IMF). In a tweet, Umar said the move was “part of a cabinet reshuffle” and that Prime Minister Imran Khan offered him the energy portfolio. “As part of a cabinet reshuffle, (the) Prime Minister desired that I take the Energy Minister portfolio instead of finance. However, I have obtained his consent to not take any cabinet position.” “I strongly believe @ ImranKhanPTI is the best hope for Pakistan and Insha Allah will make a Naya Pakistan,” he tweeted. There was no immediate statement from Khan’s office or confirmation of who would replace Umar

mentioned in the North’s report on the test — Pak Jong Chon — is known as an artillery official. Some in Seoul worry that the North will turn back to actions seen as provocative by outsiders as a way to force Washington to drop its hard-line negotiating stance and grant the North’s demand for a removal of crushing international sanctions. A string of increasingly powerful weapons tests in 2017 and Trump’s response of “fire and fury” had many fearing war before the North shifted to diplomacy. Russia announced Thursday that Kim will visit later this month for talks at the invitation of President Vladimir Putin, but gave no further details. Russian media have been abuzz in recent days with rumors about the rare meeting between the leaders. Putin is to visit China later this month, and some media speculated that he could meet with Kim in Vladivostok, the far eastern port city near the border with North Korea.

Nepal’s first ever satellite launched into space

Washington, Apr 18 (PTI): US Attorney General William Barr Thursday said that the investigation by special counsel Robert Mueller found “no evidence” of collusion between the Trump campaign and the Russian government during the 2016 US presidential elections. Addressing the media at the Department of Justice here, Barr said Mueller investigated a number of links or contacts between Trump Campaign officials and individuals connected with the Russian government. “After reviewing those contacts, the special counsel did not find any conspiracy to violate US law involving Russia-linked persons and any persons associated with the Trump campaign,” Barr said. He, however, said the Russian government sought to interfere in US election process.

Kim was reported to have said “the development of the weapon system serves as an event of very weighty significance in increasing the combat power of the People’s Army.” The Associated Press could not independently verify North Korea’s claim, and it wasn’t immediately clear what had been tested. A major ballistic missile test would jeopardize the diplomatic talks meant to provide the North with concessions in return for disarmament. PSG made to wait for Ligue 1 title

Players of Paris St Germain and Nantes in action during their Ligue 1 match.

PARIS, Apr 18 (Agencies): Paris St Germain missed another opportunity to seal their eighth Ligue 1 title when their muchchanged side were beaten 3-2 at strugglers Nantes on Wednesday. Victory would have put PSG out of reach at the top of the standings with six games left, but Dani Alves’s opener was cancelled out by Diego Carlos before Majeed Waris and an own goal by Alves gave the Canaries all three points at La

Beaujoire. PSG’s Metehan Guclu reduced the arrears a minute from fulltime in his maiden Ligue 1 appearance. It was an embarrassing performance from runaway leaders PSG, who have 81 points from 32 games and lead second-placed Lille by 17 points. Thomas Tuchel’s side, who have now picked up only one point from their last three Ligue 1 outings, will be crowned champions

on Sunday if they beat Monaco at home. PSG were without the injured Neymar, Edinson Cavani, Thiago Silva, Marquinhos and Thomas Meunier, a situation that led the German coach to complain about the lack of depth of his squad last weekend. Marco Verratti and Juan Bernat were suspended while Kylian Mbappe and Angel Di Maria were rested ahead of Sunday’s league game against Mona-

Coutinho under spotlight after ‘ugly gesture’

Philippe Coutinho

BARCELONA (Agencies): After confronting fans during Tuesday’s Champions League win over Manchester United, Barcelona’s Philippe Coutinho is under pressure to show some consistency when the runaway La Liga leaders host Real Sociedad on Saturday. Barca hold a ninepoint lead over nearest challengers Atletico Madrid at the top of La Liga with six games left and can further strengthen their grip on the title race with victory at the Nou Camp, where Coutinho will be in the spotlight again. The Brazilian has largely failed to live up to his club record transfer fee of 165 million euros since joining from Liverpool in January 2018 and his underwhelming displays have seen him booed by Barca

supporters. He has a meagre return of five goals and two assists in 30 La Liga appearances but went some way to vindicating himself by capping a lively display in the 3-0 win over United in the quarter-final second leg with a spectacular longrange strike. But his pointed celebration, in which he put his fingers in his ears and appeared to mouth insults towards the Barca fans in what newspaper Sport described as “an ugly gesture and a lack of respect”, has left a sour taste. “It was not a good gesture, he scored a great goal but it’s never good to behave that way to the fans,” former Barca and Brazil forward Rivaldo was quoted as saying by newspaper Marca. “Fans have criticised

him because they know he can do more. Barcelona paid a lot of money for him but he’s still not an idol for the fans and he needs to show character and make the difference.” Spanish media have reported Barca are open to selling the 26-year-old in order to help fund their plans to renew and rejuvenate their outstanding yet ageing squad. Ajax Amsterdam’s Frenkie de Jong has agreed to join Barca for 75 million euros in June, while Ajax’s Matthijs de Ligt is also predicted to move to the Nou Camp, and Coutinho appears to be a dispensable player who retains a large sell-on value. Yet if the Brazilian can repeat the impressive form he showed against United in the remainder of the season and help Barca capture a trio of trophies, he could yet convince his club that he is worth keeping. Barca’s closest challengers Atletico are away to Eibar on Saturday, while third-placed Real Madrid host Athletic Bilbao on Sunday. Fourth-placed Sevilla visit Getafe, who are one point behind the Andalusians and vying to overtake them to qualify for the Champions League for the first time.

co and the April 27 French Cup final against Stade Rennes. Their firepower was sorely missed as Eric Choupo-Moting barely threatened throughout, apart from when he hit the post in the second half. A l v e s , h o w e v e r, opened the scoring after 19 minutes with a splendid long-range lob after collecting a cross from Leandro Paredes. Yet Carlos headed home the equaliser four minutes later as PSG, who suffered a 5-1 humiliation at Lille last Sunday, looked shaky. Waris put the hosts ahead a minute before the interval when he deflected a team mate’s shot past Gianluigi Buffon. Nantes doubled their advantage six minutes into the second half as Carlos’s attempt form a corner deflected in off Alves. Guclu, 20, celebrated his first top flight appearance by finding the net with a fine low shot from inside the box. The result lifted Nantes up to 14th on 37 points, 12 above the relegation zone.

Pakistan leave out Aamir from WC squad K arac h i , A pr 1 8 (PTI): Pakistan Thursday left out experienced but out-of-form pacer Muhammad Aamir from its 15member World Cup squad while including batsman Abid Ali in the line-up. Chief Selector Inzamam-ul-Haq, announcing the World Cup squad and two reserve players, said the 11 from the 2017 Champions Trophy had been retained in the selection process. “We are hopeful and confident that Pakistan will give a good account of itself in the World Cup,” Inzamam said. The selectors, while not showing faith with left-armer Aamir who has taken just five wickets in his last 14 ODIs since the Champions Trophy two years back, reposed confidence in seniors Shoaib Malik and Muhammad Hafeez. Inzamam said that Hafeez’s final inclusion in World Cup was subject to him being 100 per cent fit before the tournament as he is still recovering from a thumb injury. “Doctors have advised him not to bowl or bat now but when his rehab is over he will be back in action in two weeks time,” he added.

Neuer hopeful of playing again this season

BERLIN, Apr 18 (Agencies): Bayern Munich goalkeeper Manuel Neuer is hopeful he can play the final two league games of the Bundesliga season despite tearing calf muscle fibre in Sunday’s 4-1 win over Fortuna Duesseldorf. “It’s tough to say when I’ll be back in net. I think Leipzig is a realistic goal,” he told reporters on Wednesday, referring to the game at home to RB Leipzig on May 11, their penultimate fixture of the season. “Luckily it wasn’t my foot but the calf. I was out for over a year because of my metatarsal and I’d actually expected a muscle injury much earlier.” The Bavarians, hunting a record-extending seventh consecutive league title, lead the Bundesliga with 67 points, one ahead of rivals Borussia Dortmund. Sven Ulreich will deputise in Neuer’s absence. “He’s had great games and shown good performances. I think he’s ready, so I’m not at all worried,” said Neuer.

Nadal beats Agut in Monte Carlo Monte Carlo, Apr 18 (Agencies): Rafael Nadal produced a claycourt masterclass to pick apart fellow Spaniard Roberto Bautista Agut 6-1 6-1, as the world number two began his Monte Carlo Masters title defence in stunning fashion on Wednesday. Playing his first match since injuring his knee at Indian Wells last month, Nadal showed no signs of rust as he raced into a 5-0 lead in the first set on Court Rainier III. Bautista Agut did get on the board but Nadal clinched the opening set and put his opponent under further pressure with another break of serve at the start of the second. There was no stopping Nadal who regularly moved Bautista Agut out of position, opening the court up effortlessly with powerful forehand combinations. After saving three break points at 2-1, Nadal displayed his clinical side at the net to secure a 4-1 advantage and went on to claim a convincing win. ment and will face Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov in the third round. German hotshot Alexander Zverev showed signs of a return to his explosive best in a 6-1, 6-4 win over Canadian teenager Felix Auger-Aliassime. Third seed Zverev, who lives in Monte Carlo, reached the semi-finals of his ‘home’ event a year ago, but has endured a difficult 2019 season. After finishing runner-up to Australian

Nick Kyrgios in Acapulco, Zverev has suffered early exits at Indian Wells, Miami and Marrakech. Last year’s French Open runner-up Dominic Thiem won 20 of his 23 first-serve points in a commanding display to beat Slovakian Martin Klizan 6-1, 6-4. Greek sixth seed Stefanos Tsitsipas also progressed, defeating Kazakh Mikhail Kukushkin 6-3 7-5.

Archer targets World Cup backup role L o n d o n , A pr 1 8 (Agencies): Jofra Archer says he is determined to impress in England’s one-day series against Pakistan and be ready to break into the final World Cup squad in case of injury. The uncapped allrounder was omitted from the preliminary World Cup squad on Wednesday but got his maiden England callup for the warm-up games against Pakistan and Ireland next month. The final squads must be named until May 23. Barbados-born Archer, who is eligible for national selection under new England and Wales Cricket Board residency rules, said he was surprised by his quick elevation. “I thought I

would have to wait a couple more years before I would be in contention for the full squad, I thought I would have to play for (England) Lions,” the all-rounder said. “I was fully prepared in my mind that it was going to be a seven-year job. When I found out I was qualified more quickly it was obviously a bit of a shock but also exciting.” While the 24-year-old has admirers in England regulars Ben Stokes and Jos Buttler, Chris Woakes said it would be unfair for England selectors to ask any player to make way for the uncapped Archer. “I understand the situation and I’m very happy with everything. anyone’s toes,” said Archer, whose ability to bowl at more than 90 miles per hour and power-hitting make him a limited-overs asset.” “I’m not in the World Cup squad but it’s a great

chance for me to show what I can do and anything can happen. If someone gets injured, I want to put myself in a position where I’m the first person they turn to,” added Archer.

MI thrash Delhi Capitals by 40 runs Giroud demands more

MI players celebrate after Rahul Chahar takes the wicket of Prithvi Shaw during their IPL match against Delhi Capitals on Thursday.

New Delhi, Apr 18 (PTI): The big-hitting Pandya brothers - Hardik and Krunal - and young legspinner Rahul Chahar set up a comprehensive 40-run win for Mumbai Indians over Delhi Daredevils in a return leg of the IPL here on Thursday. Hardik (32 off 15) and Krunal (37 not out off 26) propelled Mumbai to 168 for five after the team lost its way in the middle overs. Chasing 169 was go-

ing to be tough on a slow and low Feroz Shah Kotla wicket and it turned out to be exactly that as Delhi squandered a solid platform of 48 for no loss in six overs to eventually lose the game by a big margin. The hosts ended with 128 for nine in 20 overs. The victory took Mumbai Indians to the second spot on the points table, while Delhi remained in the third spot. Nineteenyear-old Chahar made the

difference for Mumbai in the bowling department by removing the dangerous opening duo of Shikhar Dhawan (35 off 22) and Prithvi Shaw (20 off 24). His outstanding figures read three for 19 in four overs. The home team could never recover from that double blow and suffered its first loss in the last four games. It was also Delhi’s third loss at home out of four matches played here this season.

Mumbai took another step towards the playoffs with their sixth win in nine games, taking them to 12 points, while Delhi remained on 10 points from nine matches. Earlier, Hardik and Krunal provided a much needed late onslaught by hammering 51 runs off the last 18 balls to put Mumbai in a strong position. This was after Delhi spinners Amit Mishra (1/18) and Axar Patel (1/17) tightened the screws on Mumbai with a tidy effort. Mumbai made a measured start with Rohit’s classy cover drive being the only boundary in the first three overs which yielded just 16 runs. In the following over, a mishit for four off Chris Morris ensured 8000 T20 runs for Rohit (30 off 22), who became the third Indian to do so. Runs started flowing after that streaky boundary as Quinton de Kock (35 off 27) collected a four and six over deep square leg and by the first powerplay, Mumbai reached a promising 57 for no loss. It was time to introduce spin and that provided an immediate breakthrough for Delhi as Mishra bowled

Rohit with a beauty on his very first ball of the night for his 150th IPL scalp. Patel was brought in from the other end and he too made instant impact by removing Ben Cutting, leaving Mumbai at 63 for two. Runs were hard to come by with the two spinners in operation, creating scoreboard pressure which led to the run out of a wellset de Kock following a terrible mix up with Suryakumar Yadav (26). With Mumbai struggling to 117 for four in 17 overs, a late assault was very much needed to put up a fighting total. And that was provided by the Pandya brothers, with both going after Keemo Paul in the 18th over that leaked 17 runs. Hardik, who is looking more dangerous with each passing game, whipped Morris for a six before pulling off a helicopter shot off Rabada in the final over. Brief Score: Mumbai Indians: 168 for 5 in 20 overs (Krunal Pandya 37, Quinton de Kock 35, Hardik Pandya 32; Kagiso Rabada 2/38). Delhi Capitals: 128 for 9 in 20 overs (Shikhar Dhawan 35; Rahul Chahar 3/19).

playing time at Chelsea

Lo n d o n, A p r 1 8 (Agencies): Chelsea striker Olivier Giroud said he has been approached by other clubs to play for them next season but wants to extend his stay at Stamford Bridge if manager Maurizio Sarri can offer regular firstteam opportunities. Giroud, who is the top scorer in the Europa League with nine goals, is out of contract at the end of the campaign, although Chelsea have an option to extend it for another 12 months. The 32-year-old Frenchman has started just seven Premier League games this season and has seen limited opportunities since the arrival of Argentina international striker Gonzalo Higuain in January. “Trust me I’m very frustrated when I’m not on the pitch, but I just don’t want to show it,” Giroud told a news conference ahead Chelsea’s Europa League quarter-final second leg against Slavia Prague on Thursday. “You need to keep that frustration for you. And transform that into positive energy on the pitch. I’m not

Olivier Giroud

happy to play the second role. That’s why I said next year I will need to have a more important role to play in the team.” When asked whether he has already had offers to go elsewhere, Giroud added: “Yes but I won’t tell you. The priority is Chelsea. With what I’ve achieved here, there is no reason they won’t give me one more

year. But I need to be happy, also.” Chelsea hold a 1-0 advantage over Slavia from the away leg, courtesy a late headed goal by defender Marcos Alonso. They will be without defender Antonio Rudiger, who limped out of Sunday’s 2-0 league defeat against Liverpool at Anfield with a knee injury.

SL drop Chandimal from WC squad Spurs edge City on away goal to enter CL semis

Dinesh Chandimal

Colombo, Apr 18 (Agencies): Sri Lanka have left out former captains Dinesh Chandimal and Upul Tharanga from their 15-man ICC Cricket World Cup squad, announced on Thursday. Chandimal was Sri Lanka’s one-day international captain as recently as October, while Tharanga led the side in 2017.

Regular wicketkeeperbatsman Niroshan Dickwella has also been axed, as has opener Danushka Gunathilaka, but Lahiru Thirimanne, who last played in the format in 2017, has been drafted in. Sri Lanka have again named a new skipper for the tournament that begins on May 30, with Test captain Dimuth Karunaratne

set to lead the side despite not playing an ODI since the 2015 tournament. The selectors have continued on that note by bringing back Jeevan Mendis, who last played in the format at the World Cup four years back in Australia and New Zealand. Milinda Siriwardana and Jeffrey Vandersay also last played ODIs in October 2017. Veteran pace bowler Lasith Malinga led Sri Lanka in a 5-0 thrashing in their most recent ODI series, against South Africa, and is relieved of captaincy duties, though he does keep his place in the squad alongside injuryprone paceman Nuwan Pradeep. Vandersay has been picked over mystery spinner Akila Dananjaya as the only specialist slow bowler in the 15, while former captain Angelo Mathews - who has missed a lot of cricket recently due to injury - is part of the squad. Sri Lanka open their World Cup campaign against New Zealand on June 1 in Cardiff.

Lo n d o n, A p r 1 8 (IANS): Manchester City defeated Tottenham Hotspur 4-3 in a wild Champions League quarterfinal second leg that left the sides knotted 4-4 on aggregate with the visitors bound for the semi-finals thanks to their three away goals. While the mentality of both teams in that contest appeared to be dominated by fear of losing, Wednesday night’s clash at the Etihad was a wide-open affair, as the two squads combined for four goals in the first 11 minutes to set a new Champions League record, reports Efe news. And yet again, the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) loomed large in determining the outcome, upholding a Spurs goal and disallowing a City marker that would have seen the hosts go through to the semis. The opening 20 minutes featured a display of what Liverpool coach Jürgen Klopp likes to call “heavy metal football,” with frantic end-to-end action. City, needing to score,

levelled the tie in the 4th minute thanks to Raheem Sterling, who exploited the inattention of Spurs defender Kieran Trippier to deliver a perfect strike. Three minutes later, City back-liner Aymeric Laporte failed to cut off a Dele Alli pass and set up an easy goal for Son Heung-

min.

The South Korean star got a second goal in the 10th minute, again as the result of a lapse by Laporte. Now behind 3-1 on aggregate, City needed just seconds to claw back a goal, as Danny Rose left Bernardo Silva unmarked and the Portuguese international

scored off a deflection. The goal lifted City and a seemingly innocuous free kick led to a second goal for Sterling, who tapped in a Kevin de Bruyne cross in the 21st minute to level the overall score at 3-3. The home side pulled ahead in the 59th minute with a goal by Sergio

“Kun” Agüero, who took a pass from De Bruyne and smashed the ball past Spurs keeper Hugo Lloris. City led 4-3 and needed only to keep a clean sheet for the final 30 minutes to claim a berth in the semifinals. But in the 73rd minute, Fernando Llorente, who came into the match as a substitute for the injured Moussa Sissoko, managed to knock a Trippier cross into the City net. City claimed hand ball and the referee took an extended look at the VAR replay before concluding there were no grounds to disallow the goal. But with 17 minutes left in regulation plus stoppage-time to come, City could feel confident of getting another goal. Three minutes into stoppage time, the goal came on a strike by Sterling and the Etihad erupted, only to fall silent moments later when the goal was disallowed after VAR detected that Agüero was offside.

Off-form Amla makes SA WC squad CAPE TOWN, Apr 18 (Agencies): South Africa have included off-form opening batsman Hashim Amla in their squad for the Cricket World Cup in England and Wales starting next month, but there is no place for all-rounder Chris Morris. Amla’s selection has been the topic of hot debate. He has been a stalwart at the top of the order for the last decade, but his form in all formats has been called into question in the past year. In One-Day International cricket he has managed a single century in his previous 16 innings, dating back to the start of 2018, at an average of 35.26. He was given the opportunity to find form in domestic cricket over the last few weeks, but has a top-score of 32 in six innings, failing to reach double-figures in three of those. Morris’s exclusion as an all-rounder is a surprise given his form in the Indian Premier League and his death-bowling ability, but the selectors have instead opted for Dwaine Pretorius and Andile Phehlukwayo,

Hashim Amla

with only one of those ever likely to play at any given time. Fast bowlers Lungi Ngidi and Anrich Nortje were both injury doubts, but have been selected, with the former especially crucial to the side given his wicket-taking ability and economy in the opening overs. Rassie van der Dussen, who only made his debut for the side in January but averages 88.25 from his eight ODI innings, was chosen ahead of Reeza Hendricks, while test opener Aiden Markram also gets the nod on the back of some excellent domestic form. Faf du Plessis will cap-

tain the side, with experienced batsman JP Duminy and fast bowler Dale Steyn also included. Imran Tahir will be the starting leg-spinner, with the guile of Tabraiz Shamsi another option in that department. South Africa have opted not to select a specialist wicketkeeper as back-up to Quinton de Kock, but instead will rely on part-timer David Miller, who wore the gloves for some of the recent 5-0 series sweep of Sri Lanka. South Africa, seeking a first World Cup trophy win, open their campaign against England at The Oval on May 30.
