Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal announced a six-day lockdown from 10 p.m. Monday night till 5 a.m. next Monday in view of an exponential rise in Covid-19 cases and the city’s health system being stretched to its limits. Kejriwal, while announcing the lockdown, said the decision was made during his meeting with Lieutenant Governor Anil Baijal Monday morning where both agreed that the situation had left no other option and a lockdown now was necessary to prevent a possible ‘tragedy’. The lockdown is needed to prevent the health system of Delhi from collapsing under the increasing number of patients as there is an acute shortage of medicines, beds, ICUs and oxygen, Kejriwal said. According to the order, essential service providers such as doctors, police personnel, the media and students going for exams will
be allowed on the production of ID cards or admit cards. An e-pass will be required for movement by grocery shop employees, food and e-commerce delivery personnel. Religious places will be allowed to open but not allowed to have visitors. Those attending weddings will be allowed on production of an invitation card. Meanwhile, LG Baijal, according to Raj Nivas sources, instructed that the issue of migrant labourers and workers be “totally addressed” during the implementation of the curfew. However, despite Kejriwal’s assurance, the extension of the lockdown till next Monday just hours after a weekend curfew announced last Thursday triggered, yet again this year, a desperate exodus of migrant workers-- notably from the Anand Vihar area which has both an inter-State bus terminal and a railway station in close proximity-- almost immediately after the announcement.

Manufacturers would have to make an advance declaration of the price for 50 per cent supply that would be available to the state governments and in the open market before May 1, 2021, an official statement by the Union Health Ministry said. Based on this price, state governments, private hospitals, industrial establishments, etc., would be able to procure vaccine doses from the manufacturers. Private hospitals
would have to procure their supplies of COVID19 vaccine exclusively from the 50 per cent supply earmarked for entities other than those coming through the central government channel. Gov meets Church leaders over COVID-19 Kohima to strictly enforce SOPs DNSU serves 20-day ultimatum on State govt to review NLTP Act ‘Use spiritual capital to save people from Covid-19 pandemic’
DIMAPUR, APR 19 (NPN): Nagaland Governor RN Ravi held an interaction cum consultative meeting with the Church leaders of various Christian denominations of Nagaland at Dr. Imkongliba Hall, Raj Bhavan Kohima on April 19, 2021 and discussed the COVID-19 situation in the Country and the State.
According to a Raj Bhavan statement, Ravi told the Church leaders that they have moral and spiritual authority and influence over the people. He urged them to use their moral and spiritual capital “to save our people from the pandemic.” He also advised the leaders to make the people more conscious and aware of COVID-19 challenges and need for strictly adhering to COVID-19 appropriate behaviours. With regard to vaccination, governor expressed concern over inhibitions of
the citizens to go for vaccination and prevalence of adverse rumours in this regard. He advised them to educate and encourage the eligible persons get vaccinated as the current ratio of vaccination in the State was one of the lowest in the country. Stating that the entire society was facing the stress due to the pandemic, Ravi reminded the Church leaders of their significant role. Ravi thanked the Church leaders for their valuable suggestions, which he said would be forwarded to the government for follow-up.
DIMAPUR, APR 19 (NPN): Kohima district administration has decided to strictly enforce COVID appropriate behaviour in the district especially mandatory wearing of masks in public places and practicing social physical distance. In an order, deputy commissioner Kohima Gregory Thejawelie directed organizers of social, academic, entertainment, cultural, political, religious functions, shops, markets, restaurants, hotels, business establishments, government and private offices, educa-
tional and religious establishments, public transport to strictly enforce COVID appropriate behaviours. Mar 22 incident: WSYF demands release of 4 arrested persons DIMAPUR, APR 19 (NPN): Taking umbrage to the arrest of four suspects in connection with the March 22 incident where three persons were killed and their prolonged detention, Western Sumi Youth Front (WSYF) has demanded their immediate release. WSYF through its media cell cautioned that if the State government failed to release the “innocent citizens” at the earliest, resolve the boundary dispute by according topmost priority, given the volatile situation, and succumbed to undue pressure from certain quarters demanding termination of 9th IRB post
commander from active service, it would be “compelled to initiate summoning all its resources to take stringent steps, the fallout of which remains unpredictable but the responsibility would be shouldered by the state government.” While asserting that it does not condone any form of killing or violence nor envisaged to interfere in the due process of law, WSYF however declared that it was strongly against undue harassment of innocent citizens by government machineries. It expressed grave concern over the arrest of four persons by Special Investigation Team (SIT) on
suspicion of their involvement with the unfortunate March 22 incident and their prolonged detention by the State machinery. Pointing out that it was 20 days since the arrests were made, WSYF said they were being detained till date merely on suspicion, and has given rise to doubts as to whether the police were victimising the innocent persons to quell “any possible fallout on the law and order front from a particular side”. Asserting that a person was innocent until proven guilty by the court of law, WSYF said they maintain this strong stand on the arrests made by SIT.
According to the youth body, the inability of the police to nab the real culprits and then randomly arrest innocent citizens on mere suspicion was highly questionable as it amounted to undue harassment. Demanding immediate release of the arrested persons who are innocent, the front said it would ensure that they report to the authorities as and when further interrogation was necessitated. Viewing the present situation as an issue between two villages– Kiyevi and Lamhai– falling in Dimapur and Peren districts respectively, WSYF alleged that the fact that Lamhai Village
Council gave illegal permit to outsiders to establish a village within Kiyevi land was being presented to the State government and accordingly press statements were issued requesting the government to settle the Kiyevi land encroachment issue at the earliest. But it regretted that no tangible action had been visible in this regard from the government side. WSYF said it viewed the government’s inability to enforce its own order and directive of maintaining status quo along the disputed area as “intentional and partisan” to shelter encroachers and harass innocent public and their leaders. DIMAPUR, APR 19 (NPN): Dimapur Naga Students’ Union (DNSU) has served a 20-day ultimatum on the State government to set up a committee/commission to thoroughly review the Nagaland Liquor Total Prohibition (NLTP) Act 1989. In a memorandum submitted to chief minister Neiphiu Rio through deputy commissioner (DC) Dimapur on Monday, Dimapur Naga Students’ Union through its president Sedevilie Angami, warned that in the event of failure on the part of the government to comply with the union’s ultimatum, it would be compelled to take its own course of action. DNSU president Sedevilie said this at a press conference here on Monday during which he also reminded that the union had served a seven-day ultimatum on Commissioner of Excise, Dimapur, on February 29, 2020, seeking strict enforcement of NLTP Act in the district. He said due to unsatisfactory response from the excise department, the union took the initiative of assisting the law enforcing agencies for months
to ensure that the Act was strictly enforced. Sedevilie disclosed that after a span of few months of working handin-hand with the department as observers, DNSU submitted a representation to the State government on November 21, 2020 after a thorough practical analysis/ research on the matter. In the representation, the union and its 12 units had sought necessary action for reviewing the Act such as - the penalty/ punishment and strength of excise personnel and either review or revoke the Act, table the agenda on NLTP in the State Legislative Assembly and conduct a stakeholders’ meeting for reviewing the Act. Since the state government did not respond, Sedevilie said the union got the impression that the latter was not serious on the issue and hence it was compelled to serve the ultimatum for the second time as a final appeal. He said the level of seriousness that the government showed over the issue was “disappointing” and termed implementation of the Act as a “mockery in itself ”. (Cont’d on p-8) K Y M C

New party takes charge of TTAADC
Pradyot Bikram Manikya Deb Barman addressing media persons. Agartala, Apr 19 (Agencies): After a landslide victory in Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC), the newly formed ‘TIPRA Motha’, took over the charge of the council of the politically important Tripura. The TIPRA in the April 6 elections had defeated the ruling BJP-IPFT alliance, Northeast Now reported. The BJP on Sunday announced that they would boycott the swearing-in ceremony of the newly elected members and no leaders of the IPFT was seen at the event held at the TTAADC headquarters in Khumulwng, 20 km north of Agartala. TIPRA Motha’s ally INPT’s general secretary Jagadhish Debbarma was elected new Chairman of
Call to cancel Bihu functions in Assam amid Covid-19 surge Guwahati, Apr 19 (Agencies): Following calls by prominent personalities and political parties for cancelling cultural events associated with a monthlong Rongali Bihu events starting mid- April in Assam amid the continuously rising Covid-19 infections, the state government has said it will soon take a decision on the matter. “Given the deteriorating situation, all Bihu functions need to be cancelled forthright. Hope the government of Assam will take a considered decision,” national award-winning filmmaker Utpal Borpujari tweeted on Monday. He is one among many who are urging for cancellation of Bihu events through their social media messages, Hindustan Times report stated.
While the situation in Assam may not look threatening at the moment, the new Covid-19 strain has led to a record surge in infection nationally.
Dr Navanil Barua, a prominent neurosurgeon and columnist said the government shouldn’t have allowed holding of Bihu functions in the first place. “The state gover nment was informed by ICMR in February itself about (the) presence of new strains of Covid in the state. With that in mind, the elections should have been post-
poned. But nothing of that sort happened. If Bihu was allowed keeping in mind hundreds of artists who rely on these functions for income, it should have been held online, something on the pattern of IPL, without audience at the venues. The government can still do that,” he said. In past weeks, Covid19 cases in Assam have
increased from single digits daily to three digits. On Sunday, the state recorded 639 new cases—including 354 in Kamrup (Metropolitan) district which includes Guwahati-- and 6 deaths, taking the number of active cases to 5,268 with the positivity rate climbing to 2.74%. While the situation in Assam may not look threatening at the moment, the new Covid-19 strain has led to a record surge in infection nationally with several states reporting new daily peaks during the second wave of the disease. “If you compare with some other parts of India, Assam is still in a better position. But we need to be careful,” he said, adding, “You guys are listening to my songs with your ears. So there’s no harm in covering your faces with masks.
We can save ourselves, our homes and Assam if we wear masks.” Earlier on Sunday, health minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said if any district had more than 300 active Covid-19 cases, “Bihu functions and other events won’t be allowed to be held there”. He added that a formal decision on this will be taken on Monday. Last year, the lockdown imposed after Covid19 outbreak put a lid on the cultural events. This year, with assembly polls getting over on April 6, the state government allowed celebrations, but with restrictions. Besides the usual Covid-19 protocols, the organizers of these functions were asked to get themselves tested for Covid-19 three days prior to and also after
the event. All functions, which usually continue till early mornings, were asked to wrap up by 11 pm and organisers were asked to sanitise venues twice, once before the event and again after it. While some organizers decided not to hold events, many events are being held at present all over the state but the deadline for functions to get over as well as other safety measures are getting flouted in many places. On April 14, the first day of the functions, prominent singer Zubeen Garg took to the stage after 11 am and performed till 12:45 am. The singer has since restricted his performances till the deadline set by government. Another singer Bipin Chowdang also performed after 11 pm on the first day of the events.
the TTAADC and Purnachandra Jamatia has been chosen as new Chief Executive Member (CEM). The CEM and the other Executive Members of the TTAADC would take the oath on Tuesday. The ‘TIPRA Motha’ chairman and Tripura’s royal scion Pradyot Bikram Manikya Deb Barman said that following the principle of ‘one man, one post’ he opted out of the CEM race. Amalgamating various local tribal-based parties and leaders and members of other parties, the ‘TIPRA Motha’ (tribal unity) headed by Deb Barman was formed just a few months ago and scripted a new political history by capturing the 30member TTAADC. Agartala, Apr 19 (IANS): The resettlement of Reang tribal refugees, sheltered in seven relief camps in northern Tripura after they fled from Mizoram 24 years ago following ethnic strife in the adjoining state, started on Monday, more than 15 months after an agreement was signed in Delhi, officials said. Officials of Tripura government’s Revenue and Relief Department said that according to the agreement signed in January last year by the Chief Secretaries of Mizoram, Tripura, MHA Joint Secretary Satyendra
Garg and the representatives of the refugees in presence of Union Home Minister Amit Shah, around 35,000 tribal refugees from 5,400 families of the Reang tribal community would be resettled in different districts of Tripura. District officials of North Tripura and Dhalai districts said that in the first batch of around 650 tribals would be rehabilitated in two villages under the two sub-divisions -- Ambassa and Longtharai Valley in Dhalai district. “The refugees are being transported to the new
locations from Kanchanpur Sub-division from Monday and they would now temporarily stay in the newly built makeshift houses in Ambassa and Longtharai Valley sub-divisions before their permanent resettlement,” Dhalai District Magistrate Govekar Mayur Ratilal told IANS. He said that the concerned departments have arranged water, electricity and other basic amenities for the tribals. Kanchanpur Sub-Divisional Magistrate Chandni Chandran said that on the first day on Monday 424 tribals of 92
families moved to their new locations. As per the agreement, which came after the Tripura Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb in November 2019 had agreed to accept the 35,000 tribal refugees ending their 24-year-old imbroglio, the Reangs, and rehabilitate them in the state and provide financial aid for their rehabilitation. The Reang tribals would also be included as voters in Tripura as maintained in the agreement, which was signed on January 16 last year.

tions to the TTAADC, of the 28 elective seats (two nominated by the members), the ‘TIPRA Motha’ won 18 seats, the BJP secured nine seats while one seat went to an Independent candidate. Two members of different tribal communities were nominated by the governor in the TTAADC on the advice of the state government. The results of the elections to the TTAADC are a major setback for the BJP-alliance, which wrested power in Tripura in 2018 after defeating the CPI-M led Left parties that ruled the state for 25 years. However, the BJP for the first time won nine seats in the TTAADC though its junior ally IPFT, despite being a major tribal-based party, drew a blank.

AIIMS to shut OPD services from April 22 NEW DELHI, APR 19 (IANS): Amid the surge in Covid-19, the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) on Monday announced it was shutting its physical OPD services from April 22 and postponing routine admissions of patients in view to augment resources for treatment of Covid-19 patients. “It has been decided to temporarily switch over from physical consultations of OPD patients in morning OPDs as well as speciality clinics in AIIMS Hospital and all centres to teleconsultations with effect from Thursday, April 22, 2021. The decision has been taken in view of increased need
to minimise possibility of community spread of ongoing Covid-19 epidemic and also to optimise diversion of available manpower and materials resources for the treatment of suspected/confirmed patients of Covid-19 and also considering the situation of total curfew announced by the Delhi govt,” a circular issued by AIIMS Medical Superintendent, Dr D.K. Sharma, read. “Emergency patients who require inpatient hospitalisation in general wards or such patients who are advised private wards hospitalisation owing to emergency/semi emergency condition, will continue to be admitted,” it added.
added. However, migrants feared that the lockdown could be extended as the situation of COVID-19 was deteriorating day by day. Mukesh Pratap, who works at a cloth factory in Dilsad Garden and a native of UP’s Bareilly, said he wanted to go to his home as there was a possibility of lockdown extension. “Lockdown will definitely affect our livelihood so it is better for us to remain at our home. It may be
extended also and I would not like to take a chance,” he said. In an online briefing, the chief minister said, “I would like to appeal to them(migrants), with folded hands, this is a short lockdown of six days. Please do not leave Delhi. You would lose a lot of time, money, and energy in travelling. Stay in Delhi.” Kejriwal said it was not an easy decision to impose lockdown because it hurt the poor people most.
NEW DELHI, APR 19 (IANS): Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari on Sunday said that India will become the top electric vehicle (EV) manufacturing hub in due course of time. In his address at Amazon’s Smbhav Summit 2021, the minister said that lithium-ion batteries will be fully manufactured in the country in the next six months. “India is moving ahead towards making electric vehicles. In due course of time, we will be the number one electric vehicle maker in the world,” Gadkari said. Noting that India has got tremendous capability for making green power, he said that: “We are power surplus... This is time for Indian economy to use electric as power.” Gadkari flagged off a fleet of electric vehicles of Amazon India virtually. In a statement, Amazon India said that with the latest development, it reaffirmed its commitment towards the electrification of its last mile delivery fleet to reduce its dependence on non-renewable resources.
JAIPUR, APR 19 (IANS): In view of the steep rise in Covid-19 cases, the Rajasthan government has announced a 15-day lockdown starting from Monday and will continue till May 3. The home department, late on Sunday night, issued new guidelines, and the lockdown period has been named as ‘Public Discipline Fortnight’. All offices except those connected with essential services shall remain closed. Shops connected to grocery, fruit, dairy products, etc. shall remain open till 5 p.m. Vegetable vendors have been allowed to sell their stuff by till 7 p.m. Petrol pumps shall remain open till 8 p.m, as per the

guidelines, the bazaars, malls, shopping complexes, cinema halls and all religious places shall remain closed. All the educational institutes, coaching centres, libraries, social and political programmes, etc. have also been suspended.

“It is important to understand that it is no magic bullet and it does not reduce mortality. It is used because we do not have a good antiviral drug...Remdesivir was proven useful for those in hospitals and on oxygen...it can’t be taken like a regular antibiotic,” he said. Before that, it had been consistently reporting over a lakh daily cases. Health infrastructures in several badly hit states are
New Delhi, Apr 19 (IANS/PTI): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday said it is because of the efforts of the pharmaceutical industry that today India is identified as ‘pharmacy of world’. He made this remark during an interaction with leaders of the pharmaceutical industry via video conferencing. The Prime Minister appreciated the crucial role of the pharma sector in the fight against the pandemic. He also appreciated the way the pharma industry is working even in such trying conditions. “Essential medicines were made available to more than 150 countries around the world during the pandemic. Despite all the challenges, the Indian pharma industry has also registered a growth of 18 per cent in exports last year, which shows its potential,” Modi said. Noting the second wave of the virus and rising number of cases, the Prime Minister commended the pharma industry for their efforts to increase production of several necessary drugs. He appreciated them for reducing the price of
crumbling under pressure from the Covid caseloads. Severe shortages of hospital beds, medical oxygen and medicines - especially Remdesivir- have been reported across the country. Social media is flooded with posts of the family members and friends of Covid patients requesting for help in acquiring the drug. Some reports suggest that the prices of Remdesivir have shot up on the black market. Amid the repor ted demand-supply gap, the centre has banned export of the drug.
CHAKULIA (WB), APR 19 (PTI): West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday urged the Election Commission to reconsider its decision to stick to the original poll schedule, as she stressed that wrapping up the last three phases of polls on a single day or at the most in two days would check the spread of COVID19 to some extent. Indicating that the EC may have decided against clubbing the remaining phases at the behest of the BJP, Banerjee, while addressing her rally here in Uttar Dinajpur, requested the poll panel to prioritise public health. “With folded hands, I request the EC to hold the next three phases on a single day. If not one day, conduct it in two days and save one day. “Please don’t take your decision based on what the BJP says... Please ensure that you protect public health by
curtailing the poll schedule, even if it is by one day,” the TMC supremo said. The CM further said that she and other leaders of her party would not hold any rally in congested areas. She lambasted the Narendra Modi government for “not taking adequate measures in the past six months to avert vaccine crisis”. Calling the BJP a party of “rioters and war mongers”, she told people gathered at the rally, “Don’t allow them (saffron party leaders) to turn Bengal into Gujarat.” Referring to the incident of firing in Cooch Behar, Banerjee said, “They conspire to kill people by opening fire on voters. Your vote will be the reply to their bullet.” Four persons died on April 10 in Sitalkuchi area of Cooch Behar when central forces opened fire in “self defence” allegedly after coming under attack from locals.
“All commercial offices and markets shall remain closed except the essential services. Commuters from bus stops, metro stations and airports shall have to show tickets to commute, those coming to Rajasthan from other states shall have to show their RT-PCR reports collected within 72 hours of travel. “Pregnant women will be allowed to travel to hospital. Those going to take Covid shots will be permitted and the PDS shops will also run all through the week. Only 50 people will be allowed to attend wedding parties while 20 for a funeral. Telecom, Internet services, postal services, cable services, etc. will remain open,” said the guidelines.
Kerala enforces 2 weeks night curfew T HIR U V A N A N THAPURAM, APR 19 (IANS): A high level committee, chaired by Kerala Chief Secretary V.P. Joy, on Monday decided to impose a night curfew from 9 p.m to 5 a.m. starting Tuesday, for the next two weeks in order to curb the rising spike in Covid cases in the state. On Monday, 13,644 cases were detected from 87,275 samples tested, taking the total number of positive cases to an all time high of 1,03,004. The infected included around a dozen medical professionals at Kottayam Medical College hospital. The previous high in the total No. of cases stood around 97,500 during Sept/Oct last year. Among the other decisions that came in the committee meeting were that all malls and movie halls have been asked to close at 7 p.m., all tuition centres have been asked to close down, while offices have been asked to go into work from home mode.

injections like ‘Remdesivir’ and to keep the supply of medicines and essential medical equipment going smoothly. The Prime Minister urged the pharma industry to ensure seamless supply chains and extended government’s support for facilities like logistics and transportation. He urged the industry to conduct more and more research on threats which can occur in the future along with Covid. “This would help us take the lead in combating the virus,” he said. Seeking cooperation from the pharma industry, PM Modi assured that the government is undertaking reforms for new drugs and regulatory processes.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday called the vaccine as the biggest weapon in the fight against COVID-19 and urged doctors to encourage more and more patients to get the jab. In a virtual interaction with the country’s leading doctors on the pandemic situation and vaccination progress, he also noted that COVID-19 is spreading rapidly in tier-2 and tier-3 cities this time, and asked them to connect with their colleagues working there and give them online consultations to ensure that all protocols are followed correctly. Urging doctors to educate people against “rumours” on COVID treatment and prevention, Modi said it is very important in these difficult times to not become a victim of panic, an official statement said. For this, Modi said, along with proper treatment, emphasis must also be on counselling of patients admitted in hospitals.

Remdesivir not life-saving drug: Centre Urge EC with folded hands to
NEW DELHI, APR 19 (AGENCIES): Remdesivir is not a life-saving drug and its “unnecessary or irrational” use on Covid patients is unethical, the centre tweeted on Monday, amid massive demand for the medicine triggered by an unprecedented surge in coronavirus cases across the country. The Union Health Ministry said Remdesivir was an “experimental investigational drug” that had been granted emergency authorisation to be used only on moderately sick Covid patients on oxygen support under hospital settings. “It must never be administered in home settings,” it warned. It added that studies had shown the drug didn’t affect mortality rates. Earlier today, AIIMS Director Randeep Guleria, a member of the national Covid task force, said the drug was “no magic bullet”.

Prevalence of shortness of breath is slightly higher in the second wave of COVID19 but sore throat and dry cough and other symptoms were higher in the first wave, the Centre said on Monday. “No difference in deaths between first and second wave among hospitalised patients. About 54.5 per cent patients require oxygen in second wave against 41.5 per cent in the first wave,” between first and second requirement is higher in he said. “More than 70 per cent wave among hospitalised second wave and ventilator patients, while the oxygen requirement is not higher in patients in both waves are

Higher proportion of asymptomatic patients in the second wave,” he said, based on the study of 1,885 patients in second wave and 7,600 patients in the first wave. NITI Aayog Member (Health) V K Paul said in the first wave 31 per cent patients were aged less than 30 years, this time it is up to 32 per cent. “Essentially there is no difference,” Paul said.
stuff Covid in Fadnavis’ mouth
BULDHANA (MAHA), APR 19 (PTI): Amid a row over Remdesivir supply in Maharashtra, Shiv Sena MLA Sanjay Gaikwad has said he wishes he could “stuff coronavirus in the mouth” of BJP leader Devendra Fadnavis, sparking protests by the opposition. The Shiv Sena which leads the three-party ruling alliance in the state is targeting the former chief minister for objecting to Mumbai police grilling a pharma company’s director over stocking thousands of vials of Remdesivir, in high demand for treating coronavirus patients. “Had I found coronavirus, I would have stuffed it in the mouth of Fadnavis,” Gaikwad said. Talking to reporters on Saturday, Gaikwad, an

MLA from Buldhana, asked what would Fadnavis have done if he was the chief minister during the pandemic. Instead of supporting state ministers, BJP leaders are mocking them and want the state government to fail, he said. The Centre asked Remdesivir manufacturing companies in Maharashtra not to supply the drug to the state, he claimed.

Police officials said over 5,000 people gathered at Anand Vihar including at ISBT as well as the railway station and the numbers were rising.Earlier in the day, Kejriwal appealed to the migrant workers to not leave Delhi, saying the short period of lockdown would need not be extended. “I assure you, the government will take full care of you. ith a daily increase of 2,73,810 in total cases, the most in a day so far, India’s tally of coronavirus cases has risen from 14,788,109 on Sunday to 15,061,919 - an increase of 1.9%. Death toll has reached 178,769, with 1,619 fatalities, the most in a day so far. Now the second-most-affected country by active and total cases, fourth by death, and second recovered cases, India has added 1,534,202 cases in the past 7 days. India now accounts for 10.57% of all active cases globally (one in every 9 active cases), and 5.84% of all deaths (one in every 17 deaths). Between February 26, when elections were announced and March 30, India saw a 224 per cent rise in daily positives while the test positivity rate increased from 2.13 per cent to 5.22 per cent. In the last 12 days, the daily coronavirus positivity rate in India has doubled to 16.69%. The weekly positivity rate, too, has increased in the past month to 13.54%. According to World Health Organisation (WHO), the positivity rate should remain below 5% for two weeks, before a government could start easing restrictions. A look at the positive rate in the 18 worst coronavirus hit states- Maharashtra, Kerala, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, Chhattisgarh, Rajaasthan, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, Telangana, Haryana, Bihar and Punjab reveals, that only eight states- Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh,, Gujarat, Odisha, Telangana, Bihar and Punjab had positivity rates below the stipulated 5% mark. The inadequate testing could be one of the major reasons for the low positivity rate in the states as levels of testing has not managed to keep pace with the level of virus transmission. Delhi appears to be staring at a huge crisis of over 30% positivity rate. In Delhi, some 3497 tests per ten lakh were conducted- one of the highest in the country. A positivity rate of 30% despite extensive testing is a clear signal that the virus is widespread in the area. Experts are groping for answers as to why the cases fell drastically after mid-September 2020 and why they have rapidly gone up now since mid-February, in spite of the ongoing vaccination drive. However, despite mounting evidence of community transmission even since April-May 2020 the centre has shied away from admitting it. Even in Maharashtra with a positive rate of over 16%, it clearly shows that community transmission has already taken place. Low testing and low positivity rate is shown in West Bengal, one among the top-10 worst hit states but with a positivity rate of 6.7%. West Bengal has conducted the lowest testing in India at 473 tests per million. Since January, poll-bound states of Assam and West Bengal have drastically reduced the number of Covid-19 tests conducted daily. This has ensured that despite massive political rallies, the states don’t show a surge in Covid-19 cases. This feeling is reinforced if leaders address mass election rallies all over the country and the Maha Kumbh is allowed to go on as usual. Unless the government admits that community transmission has taken place, its call for mass vaccinations is proving to be a red herring.
DailyDevotion Beware of the Least Likely Temptation Joab had defected to Adonijah, though he had not defected to Absalom. —1 Kings 2:28 Joab withstood the greatest test of his life, remaining absolutely loyal to David by not turning to follow after the fascinating and ambitious Absalom. Yet toward the end of his life he turned to follow after the weak and cowardly Adonijah. Always remain alert to the fact that where one person has turned back is exactly where anyone may be tempted to turn back (see 1 Corinthians 10:11-13). You may have just victoriously gone through a great crisis, but now be alert about the things that may appear to be the least likely to tempt you. Beware of thinking that the areas of your life where you have experienced victory in the past are now the least likely to cause you to stumble and fall. We are apt to say, “It is not at all likely that having been through the greatest crisis of my life I would now turn back to the things of the world.” Do not try to predict where the temptation will come; it is the least likely thing that is the real danger. It is in the aftermath of a great spiritual event that the least likely things begin to have an effect. They may not be forceful and dominant, but they are there. And if you are not careful to be forewarned, they will trip you. You have remained true to God under great and intense trials— now beware of the undercurrent. Do not be abnormally examining your inner self, looking forward with dread, but stay alert; keep your memory sharp before God. Unguarded strength is actually a double weakness, because that is where the least likely temptations will be effective in sapping strength. The Bible characters stumbled over their strong points, never their weak ones. “…kept by the power of God…”— that is the only safety. (1 Peter 1:5).

here is a school for 400 children in Solan, Himachal, called Southvale: The World School. The school is run by young MBAs. The owner is Rishabh Chopra and the technical operations are under Snigdha Parihar. It emphasizes on education, but more than that, a moral social code with compassion towards all. “We believe in raising a league of future generations that is socially, morally and intellectually awake.” During the Covid lockdown they experimented by asking each one of their children to feed and foster street animals. Now they have made it mandatory for each child and staff member in the school to foster a stray animal, be it a dog, cow, cat or even birds. Their debates, elocution, researchstation projects etc. are centred around animals. The children are taught to save a little from their food and kitchen waste and keep the fostered animal fed. “To make this act sustainable and institutionalised, we have developed the “Log Book” activity which is drawn from Charles Duhigg’s book “The Power of Habit”. It works on the basic principle of cue, routine and reward. The cue is a stray animal, the routine is feeding and logging the activity in a book. The reward is a mention of the student in the circular for parents, and a Facebook post with the picture of the child carrying out the deed. ” The aim is to add love and

compassion in society, to add meaning to human life and to pass on virtue to the kids who become the flag bearers of kindness. T h e Ye l l ow Tr a i n School in Coimbatore teaches organic farming and how to coexist with wild animals. Situated among green fields, orchard groves, cows and peacocks, the focus is more on the development of a child as a part of a natural world, rather than on textbook lessons. The Marudam Farm School in Thiruvannamalai, founded in 2009, has the same approach. The students are involved in afforestation, organic farming, and in building an intimate relationship with nature. A lot of importance is given to arts and crafts and sports as well. An education to bring about sensitive and intelligent human beings. The Chirag School is in the village of Simayal in the Nainital district, Uttarakhand. Founded in 2006 by Kanai Lal, the teachers are college graduates from local communities, and the emphasis is on how to preserve the local culture and heritage of the Himalayas. Sumit Arora, the principal, takes children on field trips to understand nature, and importance of natural springs in the Himalayas. The children learn how to dispose of waste without burning it. SECMOL was founded in 1988 near the village of Phey in the Indus Valley by Sonam Wangchuk, (on whom the film Three Idiots’
Children should coexist with nature character, played by Aamir Khan, is based) with an entirely new education system. The SECMOL Campus is an eco-village where students, staff, and volunteers live, work and learn practical, environmental, social and traditional knowledge, values, and skills together. The Campus is solar powered and solar heated; students learn ancient Ladakhi songs, dance and history, alongside modern academic knowledge. In June 2016, Parmira Sarma and Mazin Mukhtar founded the Akshar school in Pamohi, Guwahati, Assam, From gardening skills, taking care of animals, understanding renewable energy, to utilising the power of technology, this school shows us the kind of education we need now. Akshar School believes in the complete development of an individual, so that they can be the citizens the world needs now. The school has a unique system of payment: those parents that have a problem with the fees can hand over plastic polythene bags and plastic waste as an equivalent. The school makes students pledge that they will not burn plastic.
Normal schools are now producing children that have lost all ties with nature. That means unhappy children who seek their whole lives for something that might make them happy – jobs, promotion, bigger cars and houses – only to realize that nothing works. We are producing children that are afraid of all other species, that rely on violence to get their way, that believe that the only good tree is the one that makes tooth picks. That is why our country is so unhappy, and each generation is getting unhappier. If we could just emulate these schools and teach children that the meaning of happiness is to coexist and harmonise with nature, that happiness comes from not wanting but giving, that compassion is what makes the world go around, we might survive. We have all the technology we need to make children understand the world. Left to me I would make these things compulsory: 1. No leather in shoes or bags. 2. Each child has to plant 7 trees a year and look
after them. 3. Each child has to show evidence that they look after the animals in their area. 4. One hour every day watching National Geographic, and a new idea by a student in the school assembly every day on how to save the planet. 5. Very judicious use of paper, and certainly no plastic. 6. Common sharing of food without anyone knowing who brought it, so that there is no shaming of any child. 7. An organic garden in every school : if there is lack of space it could be in pots on the terrace. The children should bring in the seeds of all the fruit they eat, and a nursery could be made in the school. 8. An insistence on vegetarianism and giving the reasons why. 9. One hour a week on reading all the main religious texts of every religion, so that every child is familiar with the Puranas/Vedas/the Mahabharata/Ramayana/ the Quran and the Bible, the books of the Jains and Buddhists. 10. No exams except the 10th and the 12th. We t e a c h B i o l o g y, but do we teach children to respect animals? Until I stopped it, biology included killing frogs and mice in class. We teach Physics and Natural Sciences, but do we teach children how to protect
the planet? Isn’t it more common to hear, ‘Stay away from the dog, it will bite’ rather than, ‘It’s hot, let’s keep a bowl of water for stray animals and birds?’ How many principals have the sense to adopt stray animals in the campus ? Very few. Most of them have Indian dogs picked up by local municipalities and thrown away. So children learn that animals can be throwaways – like old clothes. All we teach children is how to be afraid, how to compete in an ugly manner, how to succeed at others’ expense, how to be the same as everyone else, how to get their way with brute strength. How to want, want and want, and take, take and take. Few children even understand the beauty of a starry sky, and practically no child has ever wondered where the stars went. I was brought up with hours of moral science and that included respecting the world around me. My school had no exams, so I never learnt or wanted to compete, we never had any pocket money so money is something to be given to help others. I was taught to be innovative and independent and happy, and no matter what life has brought, my education has stood me in good stead. We should all send our children to Southvale. Post-mortem Covid: Third booster vaccine may make immunity last longer
he coronavirus is mutating, producing new variants and spreading rapidly across the world. While the available vaccines may be able to hold fort against these new variants, it is not yet known how long our immunity will last. Hence, a third booster vaccine or an annual vaccine may be key in protecting people, health experts said on Monday. Since the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic in November 2019, the SARS-CoV-2 may have produced thousands of variants but most disappeared. However, some like the UK (B117) and South Africa (501Y.V2) and Brazil (B11248) variants mutated in such a way that helped the virus survive and reproduce. Currently, all the vaccines require two-doses to be administered, two, three, or four weeks apart, through the intramuscular route. However, a third booster vaccine or an annual vaccine dose

Emerging data suggests that there is a likelihood that our immunity may wane over time and given the increasing trend in the emergence of virus variants of concern, there is a high likelihood of booster doses,” Dr Veena P. Menon, Ph.D, Faculty -In-Charge, Clinical Virology Laboratory, Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences, Kochi, told IANS. “Yes, the third booster will help since new variants are emerging and we still don’t know how long the immunity lasts. Whatever immunity people are gaining with the vaccines, a booster will definitely help. People have suggested an annual vaccination as well,” added Dr Suresh Kumar D., Consultant, Infectious Diseases Specialist at
Apollo Hospitals Chennai. However, it remains to be seen when it would be most appropriate to administer the third booster, Menon said. US pharmaceutical major Pfizer’s CEO Albert Bourla, in a recent statement, announced that Covid vaccine recipients will “likely” need a third dose between six to 12 months after they’re fully vaccinated. He also suggested the need for yearly vaccinations against coronavirus. A booster shot is “a repeat dose of a vaccine that you’ve already received to literally boost your immunity,” Susan R. Bailey, an allergist and clinical immunologist and President of the American Medical Association, was quoted as saying to National Geographic. The third booster creates virus-fighting memory in the immune system. Thus, it creates a “greater and more long lasting” immune response, Bailey said.
But, are the existing vaccines well able to suppress the new variants? Yes, say the health experts. “As per the WHO all the currently approved vaccines are expected to provide at least some protection against new variants as protection is mediated by broad immune responses involving both arms of immunity - humoral (antibody dependent) and T cell dependent,” Menon said. While the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines have shown a reasonable effect against the mutants, the South African and Brazilian mutants are worrisome. “Most of the current vaccines, including Oxford- AstraZeneca vaccine, are covering well against the UK variant. But it has done poorly against the South African mutant. The efficacy is 10-15 per cent, which is why South Africa had to return the vaccines. The vaccine is doing reasonably effective against the Brazilian variant with around 40-50 per cent efficacy. Covaxin
has not been tested against these variants and there is no research yet on this,” Kumar said. “Changes or mutations in the virus cannot make vaccines completely ineffective. In the event that any of the current vaccines prove to be less effective against one or more variants, it will be possible to change the composition of the vaccines to protect against these variants,” Dr Alpana Razdan, VP and Lab Head, Genestrings Diagnostic Centre, New Delhi, told IANS. Vaccination is important and if they do not happen on time, the burden of Covid will remain for a longer period of time, she noted. While vaccines are not a shield against infection, they surely help reduce the severity of the infection and chances of death and hospitalisation, said the experts urging people to cut out the hesitancy and get innoculated. Naga Solution: The way forward?
ur forefathers’ only desire was to be free of foreign dominion once the British left; but it was not to be. Sovereignty eludes the Nagas and thus, will eternally remain an emotional issue. Sovereignty in the true sense refers to a politically independent state; it is the right to self-government without interference from outside. However, the land of the Nagas is divided, with one part in Myanmar and the other in India. In India too, Nagaland has been further subdivided; one piece went into the formation of Nagaland state while the rest have been annexed to the states of Arunachal Pradesh, Assam and Manipur. After decades of war and bloodshed for the Naga cause, peace was brokered. But peace is still lacking because we are today bitterly divided amongst ourselves on lines of international boundary, state borders, faction, tribe, etc. Internecine feuds were regular affairs till the recent past due to differences in ideology, mistrust, narrow-mindedness, and vested interests. Thanks to the efforts of the FNR (Forum for Naga Reconciliation) and other well-meaning organizations, these clashes have now stopped, hopefully for all time to come. These irreconcilable differences are the waterloo of the Nagas. The Holy Bible (Psalms 133:1) states “How good and pleasant it is when God’s people live together in unity”. We proclaim to be Christians, but how much of Christians really are we? The desire of
most Nagas today is to live in dignity, and in peace amongst ourselves and with our neighbors. We long for a solution and lasting peace, to keep us going as a people. The various Naga political groups have bargained for, and got something, but what, and how much? After some agreements in the past, such as the Shillong Accord, etc., with major hiccups and betrayals along the way, the Government of India (GoI) finally entered into a political dialogue with the NSCN (IM) in 1997. The other Naga political groups at that point of time passively watched, of course having signed peace treaties with the GoI. The dialogue culminated in the signing of the Framework Agreement (FA) between the two entities on 3rd August 2015. The FA consisted of broad guidelines, the details of which are in the Competency Clauses (CC); these however, have not been clearly spelt out as yet. Most of our knowledge of these clauses is just conjecture. However, Territorial Integration does not appear to be part of the agreement as yet. The Nagaland Legislative Assembly had, on a few occasions, voted for Territorial Integration of Naga areas, but we are still nowhere near today. At the intervention of the civil societies, the GoI invited the other groups as well, numerous factions by now. Under public pressure, these groups united to form the Working Committee (WC) of the Naga National Political Groups (NNPG).
On 17th November 2017 the WC (NNPG) signed the Agreed Position with the GoI. This again consisted of broad guidelines, with all details in the CC, which are now in the public domain. The NSCN (IM) too should declare their CC, because the Nagas want to know what is being negotiated for them. This will also remove all suspicion lurking in many minds. Thankfully, another group joined the peace process recently. The WC (NNPG) has now come to an agreement with the GoI, in the form of certain benefits for Nagaland and perhaps Autonomous Councils for the Nagas in Manipur State. However, nothing is clear of the fate of the Nagas of Assam and Arunachal Pradesh. These days it is fashionable to insist that the Naga political groups unite. Do we seriously think it is possible to unite them? It is nearly impossible because of the fact that we ourselves are so miserably disunited. Then how dare we demand that the Naga political groups unite? We should first set an example by uniting. At the 65thAnniversary of the ‘Naga Flag Hoisting’ observed at Parashen on 22nd March 2021, Mr. Sepili L. Sangtam, the ENSF President, rightly appealed for inclusiveness of all Nagas as a single entity. The Southern Nagas in Manipur state are covered under a single umbrella, the UNC (United Naga Council), whereas we are fragmented into so many groups in this small state
of Nagaland. We have the ENPO, CNTC, NTC, etc. We, of Nagaland, have disowned the Naga Hoho. The Nagas today desperately need an apex body to further the Naga cause. Sometimes I wonder why we cannot have a simple unifying body such as Nagaland Tribes’ Council or with any other suitable title, to include all the tribes of Nagaland. With the blessings of all, the Naga Hoho can be strengthened to represent the Nagas. We also have to get a decent deal for the Nagas of Arunachal and Assam. The day the public unites, it will not be very difficult to get the NSCN (IM), the WC (NNPG), etc. to sit across the table and sort out things amicably; with a unified Naga voice, territorial integration can be a reality. The WC (NNPG) has struck a deal with the GoI and has accepted a package; it is therefore ready to sign the agreement any day. The NSCN (IM), on the other hand, insists on the Flag and Yehzabo before signing the agreement. The Naga public and civil societies are bitterly divided on the issue, with some groups insisting on signing the agreement immediately and closing the chapter. But there will be consequences to pay for any mistake. To be fair, and give credit where it is due, the NSCN (IM) started this more-than2-decade-long negotiation with the GoI, while the other groups were never in the picture. Therefore, to suddenly dump the NSCN (IM) and sign up for a solution would
be a travesty of justice. After all, it is the NSCN (IM) that paved the way for the solution that is imminent. Moreover, from past experience we know that leaving out any group will lead to a bloodbath. Nagas, at this juncture, cannot afford another internal revolution. If an agreement is to be signed, it has to include all parties. The agreement signed, should be for a single solution, no matter how temporarily small. As has been made known to us, the Naga talks, pending a final solution, will continue in the future, after the GoI and the Naga negotiators sign the agreement. However, the negotiators should ensure that the Nagas spread over the different states are included for some benefits such as Autonomous Councils, etc. Perhaps Article 371A may be extended for them! The Naga Flag is a very important component; it
is the identity of the Nagas. The GoI should not prevent the use of the Naga Flag. Perhaps keeping the Yehzabo for negotiation at a later date will allow for an early settlement. Once the agreement is signed the Naga negotiators should start the ball rolling for Territorial Integration first. The Naga public should be grateful for whatever temporary solution is negotiated by the Naga political groups, no matter how small the package; negotiations will continue after the agreement is signed. We should bear in mind that without these negotiators we would not be where we are today. But, we have to ensure an early negotiated solution, as prolonging it will only prolong our misery. Horrible Power Crisis in Nagaland
Sir,
The power situation in Nagaland has gone from bad to worse and the worst hit are the common man. The students are on their semester exam, business community are badly affected though there are maintenance and the repair have been going on yet the load shedding should be to the certain limit especially for the business hub Dimapur which is the worst affected. Therefore, the concern department should take a note of it and take the matter seriously and not joke with the life of the common man. Kahoto V Sumi, Ekranipathar

‘Covid clinical symptoms, CT scans/Xrays should be used to rule out false -ve’ NEW DELHI, APR 19 (PTI): Amid a staggering surge in COVID-19 cases, India’s top experts on Monday said RT-PCR tests detect coronavirus in around 80 per cent of the cases, so clinical features and CT scans/chest X-rays should be used to rule out false negatives in symptomatic patients followed by a repeat test after 24 hours. Amid SARS COV-2 ‘variants of concern’ circulating, they said RT-PCR tests do not miss mutations as the ones being used in India target more than two genes. According to government data till April 15, a total of 1,189 samples have tested positive for ‘variants of concern’ of SARS COV-2 in India which include 1,109
samples with the UK variant, 79 samples with South African variant and one sample with the Brazil variant. Based on ICMR data, the current variants are also being picked up by the RTPCR tests. The RT-PCR test has sensitivity of around 80 per cent and therefore 20 per cent of the cases can still be missed out. “Also, if the sample is not properly taken or if the test is done too early when the viral load is low, it may come out negative. So, if a person is symptomatic, a combination of clinical features, laboratory reports, CT/chest X-ray can be used for presumptive diagnosis of COVID-19 and treatment should be started accordingly. The test should also be
IAF Chief RKS Bhadauria leaves for France
Oxygen, vax shortage, GST dues raised in meet chaired by Birla
RKS Bhadauria
NEW DELHI, APR 19 (PTI): Chief of Air Staff Air Chief Marshal RKS Bhadauria on Monday left for France, a visit billed as a “significant step” in further enhancing mutual cooperation. “The visit of Chief of Air Staff (CAS) from April 19-23 will enhance potential avenues for strengthening the level of interaction between the two Air Forces,” the Indian Air Force said. Air Chief Marshal Bhadauria is scheduled to hold talks with the senior military leadership of France and visit several operational facilities and air bases. “The visit of CAS will be a significant step in further enhancing mutual cooperation,” the IAF said in a statement. Gen Philippe Lavigne, Chief of Staff of French Air and Space Force (FASF), visited India in February last year. Last week, sources had said there is a possibility of Air Chief Marshal Bhadauria flagging-off a batch of five-six Rafale jets from the Merignac airbase in the French port city of Bordeaux for India.
NEW DELHI, APR 19 (PTI): Shortage of oxygen, medicines, vaccines, and GST dues of states figured in a virtual meeting of states’ legislative bodies, opposition leaders and parliamentary affairs ministers with Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla on Monday, sources said. Chairing the meeting held virtually, Birla suggested setting up a control room in all state legislative assemblies for extending help to people by coordinating with their respective public representatives. The agenda of the meeting was ‘Prevailing COVID-19 Situation - Role and Responsibility of Public Representatives’. During the meeting, leaders from Maharashtra raised the issue of shortage of oxygen, medicines and vaccines, according to the sources. The leaders also demanded that GST dues be released to the states, they
repeated after 24 hours,” AIIMS Director Dr Randeep Guleria told PTI. Dr Samiran Panda, the Head of Epidemiology and Communicable Diseases at the Indian Council of Medical Research, said the mutants -- variants from the UK, Brazil and South Africa -- are not able to evade the diagnostic RT-PCR testing that is being conducted in India. “In India, we have to be able to detect two or more genes of virus so if mutation happens on one area then the RT-PCR test kits will be able to capture it and it is capturing. However, some of the infections will remain undetected irrespective of the mutations happening,” Panda said.
UP declines Allahabad HC order on shutdown
LU C K N OW, A P R 1 9 (AGENCIES): Uttar Pradesh government has declined the Allahabad High Court’s directive to strictly enforce a complete lockdown in 5 major cities till April 26 arguing that along with lives it was also necessary to safeguard people’s livelihoods. Blaming the govt for the “present chaotic health problems” not planning in advance, the court asked to enforce a complete lockdown in Lucknow, Varanasi, Gorakhpur, Kanpur and Prayagraj and consider imposition of a lockdown in the entire State for at least two weeks. “Those in the helm of affairs of governance are to be blamed for the present chaotic health problems,” the court said.

Former PM Manmohan Singh tests positive for COVID-19, admitted to AIIMS Former prime minister Manmohan Singh tested positive for COVID-19 and was admitted to All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) here with a mild fever on Monday. Singh, 88, has been admitted to the AIIMS trauma centre, which is a dedicated COVID facility, sources said, adding his condition is stable. They said Singh had a mild fever in the morning and later tested positive for COVID-19.The doctors are monitoring his condition. Singh had taken the two doses of the COVID19 vaccine on March 4 and April 3.
NEW DELHI, APR 19 (PTI): In a veiled reference to the border standoff with China, Army Chief Gen MM Naravane on Monday said legacy issues and differences need to be resolved through mutual consent and dialogue, and not by unilateral actions. In his address at a symposium, Gen MM Naravane, however, noted that there were positive developments with China along the Line of Actual Control(LAC) that led to disengagement of troops in Pangong lake areas in eastern Ladakh. The Army Chief also said that the recent comments of Chinese Ambassador Sun Weidong “to avoid relapse and jointly safeguard peace and tranquillity in border areas” augurs well for the future of India-China relations. Talking about regional developments, he referred to the renewed commitment by the armies of India and Pakistan to follow the 2003 ceasefire on the Line of Control(LoC), saying it bodes well for the future. “We have recently entered into a ceasefire understanding with Pakistan Army in February this year, and since then there has been no exchange of fire on an otherwise active LoC. This

bodes well for the future,” he said. “With China too, there have been positive developments along the LAC, an area where both countries have differing perceptions on the alignment of the land borders. This has led to disengagement of troops in eastern Ladakh,” he added. Gen Naravane also mentioned about the 11th round of Corps commander-level talks between the armies of India and China, and hoped to “settle other border”issues through further negotiations. The military standoff between India and China that erupted on May 5 last at multiple friction points in eastern Ladakh has significantly strained bilateral ties. As a result of a series of military and diplomatic talks, India and China completed withdrawal of troops
and weapons from the North and South banks of Pangong lake in February. The two sides are now engaged in talks to extend the disengagement process to the remaining friction points. “Legacy issues and differences need to be resolved through mutual consent and dialogue and not by unilateral actions,” he said. Talking about new challenges being thrown up by the changing character of war, he said “our own region” is also witnessing that wars are no longer confined to the customary hard core kinetics but being increasingly contested in the ambiguous grey zone. “However, even as we move to a technology empowered Army, the peculiar unsettled nature of our borders means that the requirement of ‘boots on ground’ cannot be simply wished away.” Gen Naravane reiterated that India looked to maintain peace and harmony with all its neighbours and in the region. “Maintenance of peace and tranquillity requires joint efforts. All nations need to come together to uphold rules-based order, respect international laws and norms and develop mutual respect for each other,” he said.
Navy seizes Rs 3,000 cr drug from fishing vessel KOCHI, APR 19 (PTI): The Indian Navy has busted an international smuggling racket operating through Arabian sea, seizing narcotics worth Rs 3,000 crore from a Sri Lankan fishing vessel which originated from Pakistan, a Defence spokesman said here on Monday. The Indian Naval Ship “Suvarna”, which was on surveillance patrol in the Arabian Sea, also arrested five Sri Lnakan nationals on board the vessel, he said. “This is a major catch, not only in terms of the quantity and cost, but also from the perspective of disruption of the illegal narcotics smuggling routes, which emanate from the Makran coast in Pakistan and flow towards the Indian, Maldivian and Sri Lankan destinations,” the spokesman said.
Navy sources said the fishing vessel was brought to Kochi on Monday morning. The crew are being jointly interrogated by officials from various agencies, including the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB), at the Southern Naval Command (SNC), sources told PTI. They will be handed over to the NCB for further investigation, they said. Earlier, the spokesman said INS “Suvarna” encountered the fishing vessel moving around in a suspicious manner in the Arabian sea. “To investigate the vessel, the ship’s team conducted a boarding and search operation, which led to the seizure of more than 300 kg of narcotics substances”, he said. The approximate value of the seizure in the international market is estimated to

be Rs 3,000 crore, he said. He, however, did not disclose the exact location from where the seizure was effected, or the day. Apart from the human
costs from drug addiction, the spoils of the narcotics trade feed syndicates involved in terrorism, radicalisation and criminal activities, the spokesman added.

and valuable advice was followed by your @INCIndia leaders as well in such extraordinary times!” Singh on Sunday wrote to Prime Minister Modi suggesting five measures to battle the COVID-19 crisis, including ramping up vaccination and boosting supply of medicines. Vardhan said, “People in responsible positions in your party as well as in the state governments formed by your party do not seem to share your view.” He expressed shock that senior members of the Congress party are yet to utter a single word of gratitude towards scientists and vaccine manufacturers for innovating under trying circumstances and empowering the world with vaccines. “Let alone thanking
is a practice that must be followed uniformly and junior members of “your party” too must follow your advice. Quite obviously, it cannot be that the discussion on total cases, active cases or mortality is based on absolute numbers, which the Congress party often tries to do, but the vaccination numbers continue to be touted as a percentage of the population covered, he said. With due respect, and “irrespective of the negativity that your party spreads” Vardhan said he takes Singh’s suggestions at face value and with the belief that they are made keeping national interest in mind. “However, it does seem that those who drafted your letter or advised you, have done a great disservice to your standing by misleading you regarding material that is already in public domain,” he said. Highlighting the point in the letter on allowing import of vaccines that have already been approved by credible foreign authorities, Vardhan said a decision on this had already been taken a week ahead of “your suggestion”, on April 11, 2021. Some Congress leaders even shamed the vaccines in public but took their doses in private, quietly,” he charged. “A word of advice from you to them even if it had been done in private by you may have ensured better cooperation from these people. Knowing your penchant for constructive cooperation, which you have said you always believed in, I would assume that you did advise them and yet, quite clearly, your advice has been in vain,” the minister said. NEW DELHI, APR 19 (PTI): Hitting back at senior Congress leader Manmohan Singh for his critique of the government’s COVID-19 management, Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan on Monday alleged the second wave of the pandemic was instead fuelled by Congress ruled states as they were busy raising doubts about vaccines rather than vaccinating people. Responding to Singh’s letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Vardhan also said that the letter drafters of the senior Congress leader have done a great disservice to his standing. Acknowledging that while Singh understands the importance of vaccination as an important method of fighting the COVID-19 battle, Vardhan said in his letter that “irresponsible” public pronouncements made by some Congress leaders have resulted in a below national average vaccination coverage of senior citizens and even front-line workers in some of the Congress-ruled states. Tweeting the letter to Singh, the health minister said, “History shall be kinder to you Dr Manmohan Singh ji if your offer of ‘constructive cooperation’

Referring to some organisations demanding termination of post commander of 9th IRB company deployed in the disputed area from active service, WSYF averred that such termination would amount to victimising the “innocent” police personnel for failure of the government to issue any proper directive to act upon. “Merely deploying personnel at a disputed area without any clear-cut directive to them is akin to cosmetic procedures without working on the actual need. Therefore, we object to any such demand from any quar-
ter. Rather, the State government should immediately evict all illegal settlers from the encroached area following its own order,” WSYF stated. In connection with the border issue, WSYF reminded the government of the killings of Khehoi Aye, head GB of Khehoi village, who was shot dead on March 9, 1984; Khunihe Shohe, pastor of Shikuto village, who was shot dead on March 9, 2001 and the two persons shot dead at Inavi village in 2011. WSYF also reminded the government to act on its representation submitted to chief minister through Dimapur deputy commissioner on April 1, 2021.

NBFC body for inclusion of education in ECLGS
New Delhi, Apr 19 (IANS): The Finance Industry Development Council (FIDC) has urged the gover nment to include the education sector under the Emergency Credit Line Guarantee Scheme (ECLGS). New Delhi, Apr 19 (Agencies): In order to ensure that insurers and intermediaries adopt fair, honest and transparent practices while issuing advertisements and avoid practices that tend to impair the confidence of the public, the insurance regulator has issued the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (Insurance Advertisements and Disclosure) Regulations, 2021. Insurers and their intermediaries will have to ensure that advertisements are relevant, fair and in simple language which can enable people to take informed decisions. Last year, the regulator said evolutionary trends coupled with technological developments have changed the medium of advertising necessitating the review of existing advertisement regulations, Financial Express reported. Last week, the Finance Minister made it clear that the government would not go for lockdowns in a big way and only resort to local containment to break the COVID-19 chain. “Even with the second wave, we are very clear that we are not going in for lockdowns in a big way. We don’t want to totally arrest the economy. The local level isolation of patients, or households which have people in quarantines are the methods through which the crisis will be handled, the second wave will be handled. There shall not be lockdown,” Sitharaman had said. Daily average COVID19 cases across the country crossed 1.7 lakh on Sunday. India’s total tally of COVID19 cases crossed 1.50 crore with a record single-day rise of 2,73,810 new coronavirus infections, while the active cases surpassed the 19lakh mark, according to the Union Health Ministry data updated on Monday.

Protesters defending themselves from the army in Kale, in Myanmar’s Sagaing region, on March 28, 2021. (Reuters)
Thu, a 20-year-old protester in Kale, told Reuters from there by messaging app. Although the resistance in Kale was quickly crushed, it points to a new phase of bloodshed in Myanmar after the February 1 coup, with some protesters now seeking to take up arms against the junta’s forces. The junta did not respond to requests for comment. The junta-controlled
Global New Light of Myanmar newspaper said 18 rioters were arrested in Kale after attacking security forces with homemade weapons. “Some of the members of the security forces were seriously injured,” it said. Despite the early setbacks, disparate groups are trying to source better weapons, sharpen tactics, share intelligence and get training from some of the two dozen or so existing ethnic armed
groups in Myanmar, several opposition politicians said. “Some small defence units have been formed across the country, in the community, villages or wards,” said Moe Saw Oo, a spokesman for the Committee Representing the Pyidaungsu Hluttaw (CRPH), a body representing ousted lawmakers that has set up a rival national unity government. “At the same time, we
are in coordination with ethnic armed organisations about the establishment of a proper defence force.” Over 700 people have been killed and more than 3,000 have been detained by security forces cracking down on nationwide protests that have raged since the military deposed the civilian government led by Nobel laureate Aung San Suu Kyi on Feb 1. Even as the fighters in Kale retreated, other groups have sprung up elsewhere. Acts of sabotage, such as the burning of administrative buildings and attacks on businesses linked to the army, have broken out the in the main city of Yangon and the second city of Mandalay. “It is a sign of the determination and the extreme violence the military has been using against protesters rather than a strategic assessment they can take on the might of the military,” said analyst Richard Horsey, who recently briefed the United Nations Security Council on the threat of national collapse.
Boris cancels India visit due to COVID crisis LONDON, APR 19 (PTI): British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has cancelled his planned visit to India next week due to the coronavirus situation in the country, Downing Street said on Monday. Johnson will instead speak to Prime Minister Narendra Modi later this month to launch their plans for the future UK-India partnership, with their physical meeting expected later in the year. “In the light of the current coronavirus situation, Prime Minister Boris Johnson will not be able to travel to India next week,” Downing Street said in a joint statement on behalf of the British and Indian governments. “Instead, Prime Ministers Modi and Johnson will speak later this month to agree and launch their ambitious plans for the future partnership between the UK and India. They will remain in regular contact beyond this, and look forward to meeting in person later this year,” the statement said. Pressure had been mounting on Johnson to call off the visit amid growing concerns of a new variant of COVID-19 detected in the country. Over the week-
Bangladesh extends Progress in Iran nuclear talks but end ‘far away’: Delegate lockdown for another week DHAKA, APR 19 (IANS): Bangladesh has decided to extend the nationwide lockdown for yet another week to counter the spike in coronavirus infections, an official said on Monday. “The restrictions will continue for one more week from Thursday,” the government’s Chief Information Officer Surodh Kumar Sarker told reporters here, referring to a senior officials’ meeting that reviewed the latest Covid-19 situation. Given the surge in new infections and deaths from the virus, the government on April 5 enforced a nine-day
lockdown shutting offices, shopping malls and transport across Bangladesh, reports dpa news agency. The shutdown was then extended until Wednesday as the situation worsened. A country of more than 160 million, Bangladesh’s embattled health-care system has carried out 5.1 million virus tests since the first cases of Covid-19 emerged in March last year. It saw the highest single-day increase in infections on April 9, with 7,462 new cases, and the highest daily death toll, 102, on Sunday.

Japan journalist arrested in Myanmar; govt asks for release
CAIRO, APR 19 (IANS): At least 11 people were killed and 98 others were wounded in a train derailment on Sunday in the Delta city of Toukh, north of the Egyptian capital Cairo, the Egyptian Health Ministry said. A total of 60 ambulances have been sent to the scene and the wounded have been transferred to three public hospitals, the ministry said in a statement, Xinhua news agency reported. The accident happened after four carriages of the train, coming from Cairo to the Delta city of Mansoura, derailed, the Egyptian Ministry of Transportation said. President Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi has ordered the formation of a committee to present a report about the reasons for the accident.
TOKYO, APR 19 (AP): Japan’s government said on Monday it is asking Myanmar to release a Japanese journalist who was arrested by security forces in its largest city of Yangon the previous day. Chief Cabinet Secretary Katsunobu Kato told reporters Monday that his government is asking Myanmar authorities to explain the arrest and provide other details while asking for his release as soon as possible. He did not identify the detainee, but Japanese media identified him as Yuki Kitazumi, a former Nikkei business newspaper reporter currently based in Yangon as a freelance journalist. “We will continue asking the Myanmar side for
his early release, while doing our utmost for the protection of the Japanese citizens in that country,” Kato said. Japan’s NHK public television quoted witnesses as saying that they saw Kitazumi being arrested and taken from his home. Kitazumi had been detained briefly in late February by police while covering pro-democracy protests in Myanmar, where the military ousted the elected government February 1. Japan has stepped up its criticism of Myanmar’s deadly crackdown on opposition but has taken a milder approach than the United States and some other countries that imposed sanctions against members of the military junta.

leaving “a few” group supporters killed and more than 100 injured, according to sources. For at least three days, TLP protesters have choked Pakistan, staging sit-ins at the main highways. Angry mobs have had violent confrontations with the security forces, resulting in martyrdom of three police officers, while hun-
dreds others were critically injured due to the torture and assault they suffered in the hands of the TLP protesters. On April 14, the Pakistan government decided to put a ban on TLP under the anti-terrorism law, the summary of which was later approved by the Prime Minister. In November last year,
the TLP had staged a sit-in in Rawalpindi demanding expulsion of the French Ambassador over publication of blasphemous caricatures. The protest brought the capital Islamabad and other major cities to a complete standstill as highways were blocked by the protesters and violent confrontations with tear gar, rubber bullets and water cannons were used by security forces to disperse the mob. However, the group ended the protest after reaching an agreement with the government, claiming that all of its four demands had been accepted. The government had agreed to involve Parliament to decide the matter of expulsion of French Ambassador within three months.

Diplomats from the world powers have been shuttling between the Iranian delegation and an American one, which is also in Vienna but not talking directly with the Iranian side. Two expert groups have been brainstorming solutions to the two major
issues: The rollback of American sanctions on one hand, and Iran’s return to compliance on the other. Now, said Russian representative Mikhail Ulyanov, “we can note with satisfaction that the negotiations (are) entering the drafting stage.” “Practical solutions are still far away, but we have moved from general words to agreeing on specific steps towards the goal,” he wrote on Twitter. Already on Saturday, Iran’s deputy foreign minister, Abbas Araghchi, said that Tehran had proposed draft agreements that could be a basis for negotiations.

Man arrested after trying to gain NASA’s Mars helicopter takes flight entry to Taylor Swift’s NY apartment
N
ASA’s experimental Mars helicopter rose from the dusty red surface into the thin air Monday, achieving the first powered, controlled flight on another planet. T h e t r i u m p h wa s hailed as a Wright Brothers moment. The mini 4-pound (1.8-kg) copter named Ingenuity, in fact, carried a bit of wing fabric from the 1903 Wright Flyer, which made similar history at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina. “We can now say that human beings have flown a rotorcraft on another planet,” project manager MiMi Aung announced to her team. Flight controllers in California confirmed Ingenuity’s brief hop after receiving data via the Perseverance rover, which stood watch more than 200 feet (65 metres) away. Ingenuity hitched a ride to Mars on Perseverance, clinging to the rover’s belly upon their arrival in an ancient river delta in February.
NASA’s experimental Mars helicopter Ingenuity hovers above the surface of Mars Monday. (AP/PTI) The $85 million helicopter demo was considered high risk, yet high reward. “Each world gets only one first flight,” project manager MiMi Aung noted earlier this month. Speaking on a NASA webcast early Monday, she called it the “ultimate dream.” Aung and her team had to wait more than three excruciating hours before learning whether the pre-programmed flight had succeeded 178 million
miles (287 million kilometres) away. Adding to their anxiety: A software error prevented the helicopter from lifting off a week earlier and had engineers scrambling to come up with a fix. Applause, cheers and laughter erupted in the operations centre when success was finally declared. There was even more when the first black and white photo appeared on the screens, showing Ingenuity’s shadow as it
hovered above the surface of Mars. Next came the stunning colour images of the helicopter descending back to the surface, taken by Perseverance, resulting in even more applause. Details were initially sparse, but NASA had been aiming for a 40-second flight. The helicopter was supposed to rise 10 feet (3 metres), hover for up to 30 seconds, then pivot toward the rover and land close to where it took off. To accomplish all that, the helicopter’s twin, counter-rotating rotor blades needed to spin at 2,500 revolutions per minute — five times faster than on Earth. With an atmosphere just 1 per cent the thickness of Earth’s, engineers had to build a helicopter light enough — with blades spinning fast enough — to generate this otherworldy lift. At the same time, it had to be sturdy enough to withstand the Martian wind and extreme cold. More than six years in the making, Ingenuity
is a barebones 1.6 feet (0.5 metres) tall, a spindly four-legged chopper. Its fuselage, containing all the batteries, heaters and sensors, is the size of a tissue box. The carbon-fibre, foam-filled rotors are the biggest pieces: Each pair stretches 4 feet (1.2 metres) tip to tip. The helicopter is topped with a solar panel for recharging the batteries, crucial for its survival during the minus-130 degree Fahrenheit (minus-90 degree-Celsius) Martian nights. NASA chose a flat, relatively rock-free patch for Ingenuity’s airfield, measuring 33 feet by 33 feet (10 metres by 10 metres). It turned out to be less than 100 feet (30 metres) from the original landing site in Jezero Crater. The helicopter was released from the rover onto the airfield on April 3. Flight commands were sent Sunday, after controllers sent up a software correction for the rotor blade spin-up. (AP)
P
olice have arrested a man who tried to gain entry to Taylor Swift‘s New York apartment over the weekend. Authorities were called to the Tribeca apartment shortly before 11pm on Saturday night (April 17) after residents reported a call about a man who tried to gain entry when the front door of the building was opened. A suspect called Hanks Johnson was reportedly arrested on the scene without incident. An open warrant was said to be out for Johnson at the time because he missed a court date on April 6, which was related to a prior arrest in October 2019. Swift, as Page Six reports, purchased three apartments in the building in 2018 and also owns a $17million townhouse next door. The latest incident comes after a man who broke into Swift’s New
York townhouse was sentenced to six months in jail. Roger Alvarado, 22, was sentenced in February 2019 after pleading guilty to criminal contempt and attempted burglary. He was found sleeping in Swift’s home in April 2018, although the singer was not at home at the time. Last week saw Swift make UK chart history after her re-recorded album ‘Fearless (Taylor’s Version)’ reached number one in the charts. The Official Charts
Company confirmed that Swift had earned her third Number One album in under a year (259 days), making her the first artist to have the fastest accumulation of three Number One albums ever and the first solo artist to do so in under a year. Previously, the record for the fastest accumulation of number one albums was held by The Beatles for 54 years. Between 19651966, the group had three number one albums with ‘Help!’, ‘Rubber Soul’ and ‘Revolver’. (NME)

nstant messaging app WhatsApp on Monday said it has addressed two bugs that existed on its outdated software and that it had no reason to believe that “these vulnerabilities were ever abused”. The official statement came in the wake of a recent advisory issued by the CERT-In which cautioned WhatsApp users about certain vulnerabilities in the app (application) that could lead to breach of sensitive information. “We regularly work with security researchers to improve the numerous ways WhatsApp protects people’s messages.” “As is typical of software products, we have addressed two bugs that existed on outdated software, and we have no reason to believe that they were ever abused,” a WhatsApp spokesperson told PTI in a statement. The spokesperson added that WhatsApp “remains safe and secure, and end-to-end encryption continues to work as in-
tended to protect people’s messages.” A “high” severity rating advisory issued by the CERT-In, or the Indian Computer Emergency Response Team, on Saturday had said that the vulnerability has been detected in the software that has “WhatsApp and WhatsApp Business for Android prior to v2.21.4.18 and WhatsApp and WhatsApp Business for iOS prior to v2.21.32.” “Multiple vulnerabilities have been reported in WhatsApp applications which could allow a remote attacker to execute arbitrary code or access sensitive information on a targeted system,” the advisory had said. The CERT-In is the federal technology arm to combat cyber attacks and guarding the Indian cyber space. The advisory had recommended users to update their devices with the latest version of WhatsApp from Google Play store or iOS App Store to counter the vulnerability threat.

12 European clubs to form Super League
UEFA condemns ESL plans
L o nd o n , A p r 1 9 (Agencies): Twelve of Europe’s biggest and richest clubs have agreed to form a breakaway league, dubbed the “Super League,” that threatens to derail the longstanding structures of the sport. After widespread reports about the formation of the 20-team competition, the dozen founding members confirmed their involvement Sunday evening. Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United, Tottenham Hotspur, Atletico Madrid, Barcelona, Real Madrid, AC Milan, Inter
Milan, and Juventus are the clubs that have agreed to participate. Three additional teams are expected to join ahead of the inaugural season, the Super League said, adding that the competition will begin as “soon as practicable.” The remaining five teams would vary each season based on performance. “The new annual tournament will provide significantly greater economic growth and support for European football via a longterm commitment to uncapped solidarity payments which will grow in line with league revenues,” read a
Super League statement. “These solidarity payments will be substantially higher than those generated by the current European competition and are expected to be in excess of €10 billion during the course of the initial commitment period of the clubs.” The founding clubs will receive a one-time payment of €3.5 billion. The move threatens the existence of the Champions League, Europe’s premier club event. The Super League’s proposal notes that matches will take place in the middle of the week, a slot the Champions League currently occupies.

The European Super League (ESL) is a “disgraceful, self-serving” plan and a “spit in the face of football lovers”, says Uefa president Aleksander Ceferin. He also said players who play for teams involved in the closed league would be “banned from the World Cup and Euros”, BBC reported stated. Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United and Tottenham are among 12 clubs who have agreed to join the proposed ESL. “We are all united against this nonsense of a project,” said Ceferin. “I cannot stress more strongly how everyone is united against these
disgraceful, self-serving proposals, fuelled by greed above all else,” he said, after plans for a revamped 36-team Champions League were agreed. “[It is a] cynical plan, completely against what football should be. We cannot and will not allow that to change. “Players who will play in the teams that might play in the closed league will be banned from the World Cup and Euros. We urge everyone to stand tall with us as we do everything in our power to ensure this never ends up in fruition. “This idea is a spit in the face of all football lovers. We will not allow them to take it away from us.”

Adebayo buzzer-beater seals Heat win over Nets
Barcelona, Apr 19 (IANS): The pressure of playing back-to-back qualifiers followed by a main draw match the next day took a toll on India’s top-ranked tennis player Sumit Nagal as he bowed out in the opening round of the ATP 500 Barcelona Open on Monday. Nagal lost to Frenchman Pierre-Hugues Herbert, 5-7, 0-6 after failing to convert two break chances in the first set when the match was evenly poised at 5-all and Nagal was leading 15-40. Earlier, Nagal, ranked 135th in the world, had defeated Thomas Fabbiano 7-6(1), 6-3 to enter the main draw.

Hamilton abandons bid for 2026 CWG
L o nd o n , A p r 1 9 (IANS): The Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) on Monday was left with no clear bidders for the 2026 edition of its biggest sporting extravaganza after the Hamilton Bid Committee abandoned its bid for the 2026 Commonwealth Games. Web portal “insidethegames.biz”, which is “CGF’s partner for promoting Commonwealth Sport”, said that the “group seeking to bring the Commonwealth Games to Hamilton has formally abandoned its bid for the 2026 edition and will return its focus to the cente-
game in a row with a 122112 overtime-victory over the New Orleans Pelicans, with Julius Randle leading with 33 points and 10 assists for the Knicks. The Atlanta Hawks beat the Indiana Pacers 129-117, while the Los Angeles Clippers won 124-105 at home to the Minnesota Timberwolves. Te r r y Roz i e r ’s 3 4 points helped the Charlotte Hornets snap a four-game losing run with a 109-101 result against the Portland Trail Blazers. The Sacramento Kings had lost their previous nine games but got back to winning ways at the Dallas
nary Games in 2030.” The chairman of the Hamilton 2026 Bid Committee, Louis Frappoti, said on Monday that the panel was left with no choice but to pull out of the running after failing to gain the support of the Ontario government. However, Frapporti confirmed the Bid Committee will aim to secure the rights for the 2030 Games, which would mark a century since the event was held for the first time in the city. “We felt we really had no choice but to return back to the initial focus which we had, a 2030 centenary bid,” Frapporti said, add-
ing, “There’s going to be clearly a much larger sport programme, more athletes, more spectators, more culture and celebration because it’s the 100th anniversary.” Hamilton 2026 chief, PJ Mercanti, too said that the Covid-19 pandemic had played a big role in Hamilton abandoning the 2026 bid. “The second wave and now more recent third wave of the pandemic kind of got in the way of a lot of the momentum that was being built and affected the efficiency and speed of some government responses,” Mercanti said.
Bam Adebayo finished with 21 points for the Miami Heat.

Archery ‘couple’ Atanu, Deepika set for new challenge in WC Stage 1 G uat e m a l a C i t y, Apr 19 (PTI): All eyes will be on the newly-wed archery couple of Atanu Das and Deepika Kumari as India will look to make up for the lost time caused by the COVID-19 pandemic in the World Cup Stage 1 which begins here on Tuesday. It has been more than 18 months since the last circuit trophies were awarded at the World Cup Final in Moscow. The World Cup Stage 1 will be the first global event since the pandemic forced the cancellation of the international calendar in 2020. For the Indians, the wait was longer as they last took part in a World Cup back in the stage 4 circuit in Berlin in July 2019. Thus, they would look to shake off

the rustiness and get back to rhythm. In the absence of Asian heavyweights Korea, China, Chinese Taipei and Turkey, the Indian archers led by Atanu and Deepika would look to a strong performance in the build-up to the Tokyo Olympics. Known
for meticulous planning, archery’s leading nation Korea has announced it will not shoot at any of the three stages of the 2021 World Cup, all scheduled before the Olympic Games, due to ongoing travel restrictions caused by the pandemic.
Without the big Asian teams, it will be a battle of supremacy between the American and European nations, while the Indians would also hope to make a mark, especially in the mixed and team events. Having already secured the Olympic quota, it would be the first real test for the trio of Atanu, Pravin Jadhav and veteran Tarundeep Rai. In the women’s section, India has got individual Olympic quota through former world number one Deepika who, along with Ankita Bhakat and Komalika Bari, would look to the much-needed exposure ahead of the final qualification in Paris. Reigning under-18 world champion, Komalika has shown a lot of promise in the recent past and she
would look to come out of the shadow of longtime leading archer Deepika. Realistically, it’s the women’s team and the mixed pair team which can win medals in the absence of the fancied compound team which was withdrawn under unfortunate circumstances. The national federation pulled out the compound team boasting the Asian champions duo of Abhishek Verma and Jyothi Surekha just before their departure after their coach Gaurav Sharma tested “positive” for COVID-19. The coach was isolated at the SAI Sonepat camp while the team left for Delhi airport but the federation disallowed their entry to “ensure safety” of the recurve archers.
Atalanta record first win in 20 yrs against Juventus ICC bans Lokuhettige for eight years Rome, Apr 19 (IANS): Atalanta broke a 20-year curse to end their winless run against Juventus as they managed a 1-0 home win in the head-to-head race for third place, the first victory over the Bianconeri in Serie A since 2001. Juve had a record of 32 consecutive games unbeaten against Atalanta, the two sides ranked third and fourth respectively before Sunday’s game, with only one point separating the two teams, Xinhua reports. come to an end after a 1-1 draw with Napoli. Inter entered Sunday’s game with 11 consecutive wins. Romelu Lukaku missed a great chance for Inter as his attempt rattled
the woodwork. While at the other end Samir Handanovic’s howler allowed Napoli to take the lead in the 36th minute as the shot-stopper accidentally palmed a cross into his own net. The Nerazzurri got back on level terms in the 54th minute as Kostas Manolas’s clearance only fell into the path of Christian Eriksen to hit in a missile. Matteo Politano almost scored the winner against his former club, but only saw his scorcher hit the woodwork. The ban for Lokuhettige, a right-arm fast-medium bowler and lower-order batsman, is backdated to April 3, 2019 when he was provisionally suspended. “Having represented Sri Lanka in international cricket, Dilhara had attended a number of anti-corruption education sessions and would have known his actions were a breach of the Code,” Alex Marshall, ICC General Manager – Integrity Unit, said in a release. “The severity of the sanction reflects the seriousness of his offences and his continued refusal to cooperate and should serve as a deterrent for

IPL: CSK beat RR by 45-run; climb to 2nd place
Mumbai, Apr 19 (PTI): The spin duo of Ravindra Jadeja and Moeen Ali tormented the Rajasthan Royals batting line-up to ensure a second consecutive win for Chennai Super Kings in the IPL here on Monday. With the win Chennai also jumped to the second spot in the points table. Cameos from Faf du Plessis (33 off 17), Dwayne Bravo (20 not out off 8), Ambati Raydu (27 off 17) and Ali (26 off 20) helped CSK post 188 for nine after being put in to bat. Royals made a promising start in the run chase courtesy Jos Buttler (49 off 35) before the batsmen succumbed to the spinners on the Wankhede pitch which offered more turn than earlier games. CSK won the game by 45 runs after Royals’ innings ended at 143 for nine. Ali (3/7 in 3 overs) picked up three wickets in quick succession to effectively seal the game for his team after Jadeja (2/28 in 4) provided the crucial breakthrough by castling Buttler with a classical away turning delivery. One of the best fielders around, Jadeja also took four catches.

It was another emphatic win for CSK after they outplayed Punjab Kings while Royals suffered their second loss in three games. Earlier, CSK lost wickets towards the end with the batsmen going for big hits and also in the face of some good bowling by Royals. Du Plessis top scored with 33 as the CSK batsmen got starts but couldn’t capitalise on them after. Young Chetan Sakariya (3/36 from 4) was the best bowler for Rajasthan while Chris Morris finished with 2/33 despite conceding 15 runs in his final over. Barcelona ‘yet to offer Messi new contract’
London, Apr 19 (Agencies): Barcelona have reportedly still yet to offer Lionel Messi a new contract, despite the superstar forward having just two months to run on his existing deal. The six-time Ballon d’Or winner remained at Camp Nou for the 2020-21 campaign after failing in his attempt to force through an exit last summer, Sports Mole reported. However, Messi is set to become a free agent at the end of June and is able to sign a pre-contract agreement with a foreign club should he wish. Paris Saint-Germain and Manchester City are considered the favourites to sign
the Argentina international should he end his 17-season stay with Barca. Spanish outlet Marca suggests that the Catalan giants are hoping to open talks with Messi over fresh terms soon, but they cannot do so at the moment. It is claimed that Barca are having to delay discussions as they continue to assess their financial position, with the club having to pay off €1bn (£890m) in debt. Messi’s father Jorge was pictured in Catalonia at the weekend for the first time since last September, suggesting that negotiations are set to begin.
