Daily COVID-19 count nears 3 lakh Night curfew in Dmu from Apr 23 Triple mutation strain detected
Hospitals face oxygen shortage, Centre increases states’ quota NEW DELHI, APR 21 (PTI): As India saw another record high of 2,95,041 new COVID cases and 2,023 deaths, the oxygen crisis precipitated by the second wave appeared to intensify with complaints of shortage from several states including Maharashtra where tragedy struck when 22 patients on ventilator support suffocated to death due to leakage in an oxygen storage tank. The Centre announced on Wednesday evening that it was increasing the quota of oxygen in eight states, including Delhi, in view of the sudden spike in demand due to an exponential rise in the number of COVID patients admitted in hospitals. At a press conference, NITI Aayog member (Health) Dr. V K Paul appealed to the states, hospitals

and nursing homes to ensure rational use of oxygen as it was “life-saving” drug for COVID patients. Noting that 7,500 MT of oxygen was being produced in the country per day and 6,600 MT is being allocated to states for medical purposes, the Centre said the Union government and state governments need to work together and respond promptly to the challenges posed by pandemic. On Wednesday, several hospitals in the national capital like Sir Ganga Ram City Hospital, St Stephen’s Hospital and Holy Family
Hospital in Okhla said they only had oxygen for two to five hours. Other hospitals too had been facing a depleting stock for the last few days. The country was struggling to sustain the medical oxygen supply lines as the active cases crossed the 21-lakh mark with 2,95,041 fresh infections in a span of 24 hours, pushing India’s total tally of COVID-19 cases to 1,56,16,130. The death toll increased to 1,82,553 as daily fatalities crossed 2,000 for the first time, according to the Health Ministry data updated on Wednesday morning.
As India reports nearly three lakh cases and over 2,000 deaths in 24 hours, the biggest jump since the pandemic erupted, a new mutation in the COVID virus has emerged as the new challenge. After the double mutation, it’s now the triple mutation, meaning three different Covid strains combining to form a new variant, has been detected in parts of the country, reports the NDTV. States like Maharashtra, Delhi and West Bengal are believed to have cases driven by the triple mutant. Scientists believe the new surges globally are driven by new variants. “This is a more transmissible variant. It is making lots of people sick very quickly,” said Madhukar Pai, professor of epidemiology at McGill University. “We have to kee p tweaking vaccines. For that we need to understand the
disease. But we need sequencing on war footing,” Dr Pai told NDTV. That sets up a huge challenge for India, where genome sequencing is being done for less than one per cent of all cases, currently. According to Dr Pai, the delay in detecting the double mutation may have contributed to the current virus spurt. Why so many mutations? The more a virus spreads, the more it replicates and the more it mutates. What is the triple mutation? A double mutation, which surfaced in India, was when two strains combined. Now three Covid variants have combined to form the triple mutation. It has been found in Maharashtra, West Bengal, Delhi. Is the triple mutation infectious? Experts believe mutations are driving the fresh infection spikes, not just in India but across the (Cont’d on p-8) world.

CNCCI, ACC panel to tackle economic blockades Gov meets leaders of political parties Staff Reporter
DIMAPUR, APR 21 (NPN): In order to tackle blockades and ensure border issue does not hamper the economy, Confederation of Nagaland Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CNCCI) and Assam Chamber of Commerce (ACC) have appealed both the Nagaland and Assam state governments, stakeholders and community leaders that border issues should not hamper the economy of the two states. The resolution was adopted at the culmination programme of CNCCI 3rd executive two- day meet which was held at hotel Saramati, Dimapur. The two chambers held the view that border issues and economic trade
and commerce, were of different issue. Therefore, in order to streamline the issue for “ceaseless and seamless” flow of trade between the two states, they have resolved to form Border Management Committee (BMC) at Jorhat, Golaghat and Karbi units to resolve any situation arising out of border issues. Both the chambers decided to work hand in hand in order to form the committees not only to look after the issues and problems faced by the business committee but also over economic issues also affected by the border issues. The chambers held a thorough deliberation on issues concerning both the states and on areas where both states could jointly
move forward, grow and work together in an organized matter to benefit both states during inter-state delegation meetings. A joint press briefing was held by the two chambers to highlight the resolution adopted. ACC secretary general Sisir Dev Kalita and CNCCI chairman Dr Khekugha Muru mentioned that both the chambers have resolved to initiate formation of all North Eastern States Coordination Committee to facilitate in voicing out the issues and problems in a common platform. They said bringing together all chambers under one umbrella was the need of the hour. Both chambers felt that as both states were dependent upon agriculture produce, it was resolved to

Expressing concern over high vaccine hesitancy in the state due to rumours going around, Ravi urged the leaders to play their role as leaders in encouraging people to shed vaccine hesitancy. Hence it is our collective responsibility to do everything possible to boost their morale,” Ravi said. WC, NNPGs seeks cooperation for Naga solution TYOD expresses solidarity with UZYF DIMAPUR, APR 21 (NPN): Working Committee of the NNPGs, has appealed to all Nagas to be steadfast physically, morally and spiritually, stating that “when honorable and acceptable Indo-Naga political happens, despite artificial boundaries, our aspiration as one people will be strengthened in flesh and spirit.” I n a s t a t e m e n t , WC through its media cell pointed out that the dreadful pandemic in 2020, its resurgence in 2021, ongoing farmers’ stir in the Indian capital and elections in various Indian States had dented hopes for an early signing of the Indo-Naga political settlement. Nevertheless, it claimed that there was a strong
undercurrent within the corridors of power in New Delhi that the Indo-Naga political talks, which concluded with both negotiating Naga political entities having resolved all fundamental issues with Government of India (GoI) as on October 31, 2019, with unresolved matters to be tackled through democratic process. WC asserted that the recognition and restoration of Nagas’ historical position and principled stand, restructuring and reform of political and administrative landscape would take place on the basis of Agreed Position signed on November 17, 2017. This would be announced and implemented through mutually agreed politi-
cal agreement between Nagas and GoI, it added. Stating that the days of propaganda have been replaced by hard facts and practical route for solution, WC, NNPGs claimed that all major and minor Naga tribes and village chieftains and GBs in towns, who are the real source of power and authority at the grassroots level, and “indigenous non-Naga communities” have crystal clear understanding of the position of Government of India vis-à-vis “the Status Paper of WC, NNPGs that was shared with Naga tribes and apex civil societies.” “From the signing of Agreed Position on 17th Nov. 2017 and from day one of the
negotiations, Indo-Naga political issue encompassed Nagainhabited areas in the Indian States of Manipur, Arunachal Pradesh, Assam and in Myanmar. The neighbouring communities have been consulted on the impending solution. There should be no confusion whatsoever,” it said. WC, NNPGs also expressed concern over dubious narrative from “un-mandated elements” like Naga Hoho and its past officials who continue to throng regional TV debates to stay relevant. Likening them to parrots repeating only what they were taught, the committee urged Nagas to stay alert against such “foolhardy narrators with (Cont’d on p-8)
DIMAPUR, APR 21 (NPN): Tenyimi Youth Organization Dimapur (TYOD) has slammed the statement of Western Sumi Youth Front (WSYF) for “demanding and serving ultimatum to the government to release the four suspects” in connection with the killing of three persons on March 22. TYOD through its media cell, said that instead of condemning the incident and praying for justice, WSYF indicated support to and shelter for the offenders, adding it was “uncalled for at this juncture”. Further, TYOD stated that while the demands to arrest the culprits were still in vain, serving an ultimatum and threatening the government to release the suspects was unjust. While asserting that “criminals should be arrested at the earliest and put behind bars with
non-bailable sentence”, TYOD urged upon the authorities involved, to not leave any stone unturned, irrespective of who he/she may be in delivering justice. It also urged upon authorities to not entertain pressure from any corner or delay in identifying and arresting the culprit. TYOD reiterated that “criminals should be treated as criminals and law should take its own course of action without favouritism or nepotism.” Further, it reminded that land dispute cases were different and needed to be addressed as per the law of the land. However, killing of innocent lives, by “taking law into their own hands under the cover of gun culture” and intimidating one’s own Naga brothers, was totally uncalled for and unacceptable to any (Cont’d on p-8) degree. Arunachal resolves to protect wildlife
Itanagar/Kohima, Apr 21 (IANS): After Nagaland, another Northeastern state Arunachal Pradesh is determined to provide protection and sanctuary to the birds and wild animals even as the tribals traditionally hunt them for centuries. Ar unachal Pradesh Environment and Forests Minister Mama Natung said that responding to the government appeal so far 680 airguns and a few rifles have been voluntarily surrendered by the people and they willingly vowed not to hunt birds and animals. “Those who are surrendering airguns and rifles, the government is giving them encouraging certificates. We are considering framing suitable policies to give some support to those people who would be affected after depositing airguns and rifles to the government,” Natung told IANS over phone. The Arunachal Pradesh government on March 17 had started the campaign to inspire the people to surrender their airguns and rifles

Since March 17, the Environment and Forests Minister, Chief Minister Pema Khandu, Union Minister for Sports and Youth Affairs Kiren Rijiju, top officials of Environment, Forests and Wildlife Departments have been holding numerous events in the districts and far flung areas to motivate the people to protect the bird, animals and environments. Sonowal directs officials to rescue ONGC employees
Guwahati, Apr 21 (PTI): Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal on Wednesday condemned the kidnapping of three Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) employees by suspected ULFA(I) militants and directed the chief secretary and the DGP to take all steps to rescue them. In a series of tweets, Sonowal denounced the abduction of ONGC employees Mohini Mohan Gogoi, Alakesh Saikia and Ritul Saikia from an oilfield in Sivasagar district. “I have asked CS Shri Jishnu Barua and @DGPAssamPolice Shri Bhaskarjyoti Mahanta to take all possible measures for their release,” he added. Sonowal also said that Special DGP (Law and Order) Gyanendra Pratap Singh has rushed to the spot and is monitoring the investigation on the abduction. The public sector unit said in a statement that the three employees were abducted by “unknown armed miscreants” in the early hours of Wednesday from a rig site of the ONGC in Lakwa oilfield near the Assam-Nagaland border.

A senior official of Sivasagar district administration said that suspected ULFA(I) militants are behind this kidnapping and they fled through Nagaland. No demand for ransom or anything else has been received so far. During the first week of April, two employees of the Quippo Oil and Gas Infrastructure, a New Delhi-based private firm, were released by ULFA(I) insurgents who had kidnapped them threeand-a-half months ago on December 21 last year. The two were abducted from Kumchaikha hydrocarbon drilling site in Changlang district of Arunachal Pradesh and the ULFA(I) demanded a ransom of Rs 20 crore.
cals came out in large numbers and surrendered their air-guns commonly used to hunt birds and small wild animals. “The ‘abhiyan’ (campaign) is an initiative of the state government to dissuade hunting and create awareness on ill-effects of killing wildlife.” Natung said that the tribal people’s lives have long been dependent on wildlife and forests and, “without realising the impact on climate change and global warming, the tribal
people indiscriminately cut down forests and kill wildlife. “Now is the time for us to protect wildlife and stop unabated felling of forest trees, as it has greatly impacted on global warming.” During one of the programmes at southern Arunachal Pradesh’s Pasighat in East Siang district, the Chief Minister said that the campaign to be successful, if it emerges as a people’s movement and requested all community based organisations to play an active role. “In earlier days, we hunted for food. But times have changed. We have food available and hunting isn’t a necessity now. We have witnessed destruction of large areas of paddy fields by pests and insects. The fact that birds control their population cannot be denied. May be, we are guilty of dropping the birds’ population and thus the famine-like situation,” Khandu observed. He said that the people have to take a pledge “not to eat wild meat” and added that more often than not the
Guwahati, Apr 21 (PTI): Assam Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday said people travelling to the state from outside will have to undergo mandatory seven-day home quarantine in the wake of a rise in COVID-19 cases. However, government officials, those travelling for medical reasons, and people visiting the state in connection with bereavements will be exempted from it, he said. In a series of tweets, Sarma said, the health department is working relentlessly to ramp up testing by rolling out screening centres in every ward of the state capital. On April 13, the Assam government had made it mandatory for all air passengers arriving in the state to undergo Rapid Antigen Test (RAT), followed by RT-PCR test, even if the RAT was negative. While passengers were not to be charged for the RAT, RT-PCR would cost
Y Erabot takes oath as MLA in Manipur Correspondent IMPHAL, Apr 21: The strength of BJP in the current Manipur legislative Assembly increased to 24 as Y Erabot Singh of BJP who was recently declared as and MLA was sworn-in as a member of the state Assembly on Wednesday. While declaring null and void the election of Okram Henry from Wangkhei assembly constituency of Imphal East, a single bench of Justice MV Muralidaran of High Court of Manipur, on April 15, declared election of Y Erabot of BJP who secured second position in the 2017 elections to the

state assembly as elected. Implementing the verdict of the court, Speaker of the 11th Manipur Legislative Assembly administered oath to Erabot as a BJP member of the state assembly today. State chief minister and some members of the state Assembly took part in the swearing-in ceremony held at the conference hall of the
annexe building of the Manipur Legislative Assembly Secretariat, Imphal. The High Court of Manipur, in its ruling passed on April 15, declared the election results of Wangkhei Assembly constituency in which Okram Henry was declared elected as null and void. The verdict of the court was related to an election petition filed in the court by Y Erabot pointing out false information provided by Henry who contested on a Congress ticket in his affidavit submitted to the RO while filing his nomination paper. Interestingly, while pending the court’s judgment, Henry had already
resigned as a member of the state Assembly before joining the ruling saffron. Awaiting the by-election, Henry was inducted as cabinet minister with in-charge of social welfare and MAHUD in the BJP-led coalition government. His six month period of being a minister by a non-elected person had also expired on March 23 last. With the induction of Erabot as a member of the state Assembly, the effective strength of the 60-seat state Assembly increased to 55 with 25 BJP, 17 Congress, four each of NNP and NPF (both coalition partners of BJP), one each of LJP and AITC and three independents.

Sarma also said, “We’re ramping up #COVID19 testing facilities by creating a screening centre in every ward of Guwahati City so that people can get access to RT-PCR or Rapid Antigen test without any hassle.” In case, the daily case rate in Guwahati touches 1,000, the Kamrup Metropolitan district administration has been authorised to close educational institutions and hostels,
he added. The number of positive cases in Guwahati has been on the rise with 742 people testing positive on Tuesday. The health minister said, the state government has granted tankers, carrying nitrogen, argon and oxygen, the status of an ambulance, to enable their hassle-free movement in the state and transit through Assam for the speedy delivery of oxygen to critical centres. The state reported three more deaths due to COVID-19 on Tuesday, while the number of coronavirus cases rose sharply with 1,651 persons testing positive, pushing the total number of infections to 2,27,473. Given the spiralling COVID-19 numbers, the Assam government has already ordered to shut markets and shops by 6 pm and permitted 50 per cent of employees, except officers, to work from home in districts having 100 or more active cases.

Khandu said that hunting during the festival is an ancient practice and cannot be stopped by any legal or government order but has to be pondered upon by elders and youngsters alike. Forest and Wildlife officials said that sometimes telescopes were fitted with the airguns to kill birds and small wild animals. Earlier Nagaland had started massive campaign to provide sanctuary to the birds especially the ‘Amar falcons’, known to be one of the world’s longest-distance migratory birds as they travel up to a staggering 22,000 km a year. Tribals of all communities have positively responded to the government and environmentalists’ appeal and now the killing of birds in Nagaland has become a history.

Golaghat (Assam), Apr 21 (PTI): The carcass of an adult male rhino with its horn missing was found near a waterbody inside the Kaziranga National Park in Assam, officials said on Wednesday. Poachers shot the animal dead three to four days ago but the carcass was noticed on Tuesday. A bullet mark was found on the body during post-mortem examination, pointing towards poaching, the officials said. Govt’s Covid vax strategy ‘abject failure’: Priyanka Says can’t blame Nehru when Modi in charge NEW DELHI, APR 21 (PTI): Slamming the government’s alleged lack of preparedness to deal with the second wave of COVID19, and terming its vaccine strategy an “abject failure”, Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Wednesday said the BJP-led Centre cannot divert blame this time as Jawaharlal Nehru isn’t in charge, but Narendra Modi is and he should be protecting Indians. The Congress general secretary also questioned the government over oxygen exports in the past year and alleged the central leadership has failed to deliver oxygen to its own despairing citizens. In an exclusive interview with PTI, Priyanka Gandhi said constructive suggestions from opposition parties are being dismissed as politicisation rather than being accepted in the spirit that the nation is in crisis, every single life matters and, therefore, “all of us must stand together and do whatever we can to save lives regardless of our politics”. “They (government) are wasting time engaging in pettiness, making a minister respond to a letter addressed by a former prime minister who served this nation selflessly and with dignity to the present Prime Minister,
Union Ministers are blaming state governments for increased oxygen consumption and central government press releases are targeting Opposition governments,” she said. Priyanka Gandhi’s remarks come two days after Health Minister Harsh Vardhan responded to former prime minister Manmohan Singh’s letter with suggestions on COVID-19 management, and alleged that the second wave of the pandemic was fuelled by Congress-ruled states as they were busy raising doubts about vaccines rather than vaccinating people. Talking about the Congress’ long-standing demand of universalization of COVID-19 vaccination and the government’s inoculation strategy, Priyanka Gandhi slammed the government for exporting vaccine doses for a “PR exercise”. Thanks to 70 years of forward-thinking governance, today India is the largest manufacturer of vaccines in the world, she said. “The Union government enabled the export of six crore vaccines between January and March 2021. A huge PR exercise was conducted with photos of vaccines arriving in countries like Mauritius, Guyana and Nepal being circulated. During this same period, Indian citizens received only three to four crore doses,” she said. “Why didn’t the govern-
Priyanka Gandhi Vadra
ment prioritise Indians first. Why did the prime minister place self-promotion above the nation? In a state like UP with a 22 crore population, only 1 crore doses have been administered,” the Congress general secretary in-charge Uttar Pradesh said. Foreign agencies purchased vaccines from Indian vaccine manufacturers much before the Indian government placed an order and several large countries placed advance orders for vaccines twice the size of their population, she said, adding that India placed its first order only in January 2021. The Modi gover nment’s lack of foresight has compelled India to become an importer of vaccines today and even now, their “vaccine strategy is flawed and discriminatory”, Priyanka Gandhi said. “Why are free vaccines
not being made available to 18-45-year-olds? The new variants are supposedly even more virulent and many young people are affected. And why is the government allowing middlemen into the equation without price controls?” she said. This is not a coherent strategy, it is an “abject failure”, Priyanka Gandhi said. Asked about Union minister Piyush Goyal’s statement that states must keep oxygen demand under control, she said Goyal’s “heartless comment” shows the “brutal coldness” at the heart of this administration. “They see precious human life in terms of demand and supply. But then what can one expect from a government led by a prime minister who is continuing to hold public rallies and laughing on stage while

lakhs of people are crying for help, the healthcare system is reeling under a massive pandemic and lakhs of Indians are fighting for their lives,” she said. On the shortage of medical grade oxygen and critical medicines like Remdisivir, she said that due to the very governments that Prime Minister Modi holds responsible for every ill in the country, India’s capacity as one of the world’s largest producers of oxygen was built over decades. India produces 7,500 Metric Tonnes of oxygen per day, at the peak of the last wave the cumulative use of oxygen in hospitals across the nation was less than half this quantity per day, she pointed out. “We produce enough oxygen, the government has simply not created the adequate logistics to supply it across India. It had the entire period between the first and the second wave to do this. It did nothing,” she alleged. India has exported about 9,300 Metric Tonnes of Oxygen in the last 12 months, Priyanka Gandhi said and asked who is responsible for the deaths due to lack of oxygen. She said the state of affairs was “shameful” as one of the largest oxygenproducing countries in the world is being forced to import as its leadership fails to deliver oxygen to its own despairing citizens.
Covishield at Rs 400 to State, Rs 600 to pvt hospitals New Delhi, Apr 21 (IANS): Covishield will be sold at Rs 400 per dose to the state government and Rs 600 to private hospitals, Serum Institute of India (SII) said on Wednesday. Covishield is known as AstraZeneca vaccine across the world. SII, an Indian biotechnology and pharmaceuticals company, issued a statement after the government allowed vaccination of all persons above the age of 18 from May 1. The decision was announced after a meeting of Prime Minister Narendra Modi with pharma companies, doctors, Cabinet ministers in charge of health, drugs and officials spanning multiple nodal ministries. Ser um chief Adar Poonawalla welcomed the government’s announcement to accelerate India’s vaccination drive. “The promising directives will help to scale up vaccine production, and allow state governments, private hospitals, and vaccination centers to procure vaccines directly,” Poonawalla said. The company also stated that considering the global vaccine prices which cost anywhere from Rs 750 to Rs 1,500 per dose, they are ensuring that vaccines are affordable in India in comparison to any other vaccines in the world.
SC panel on encounter of gangster Vikas Dubey Says no evidence of wrongdoing on part of UP police NEW DELHI/LUCKNOW, APR 21 (PTI): A three-member inquiry commission headed by former Supreme Court judge Justice B S Chauhan has found no evidence of wrongdoing on the part of Uttar Pradesh police in the encounter killings of gangster Vikas Dubey and his five associates in July last year, sources said on Wednesday. The other two members of the inquiry commission were – former high court judge Justice (retd) Shashi Kant Agarwal and retired Director General of Police of Uttar Pradesh K L Gupta and the panel was to submit its report within two months. One of the informed sources told PTI that “no evidence has been found or brought before the commission to establish that Uttar Pradesh police officials were involved in wrongdoings”. No media persons, especially electronic media journalists who were chasing police van carrying Dubey from Ujjain in Madhya Pradesh to Kanpur in Uttar Pradesh, on the day of encounter appeared to depose before the commission, Pranshu Agrawal, the counsel assisting the panel on behalf of State govern-
ment, said. Richa Dubey, the wife of slain gangster, and other public witnesses did not appear to depose before the panel despite public notices being published in newspapers, he said. “Suspicion cannot replace the hard evidence,” Agrawal further said. The report is likely to be submitted to the apex court soon. The panel submitted its report to the state government on Monday, eight months after it was set up. “Yes the commission has submitted its report to the state government on Monday. A copy of the report will be submitted in the Supreme court also,” Gupta told PTI. He, however, did not elaborate on the contents of the report. Asked about it, Additional Chief Secretary, Home, Awanish Kumar Awasthi said, “I would not like to comment on it.” According to the sources, the inquiry commission has found no evidence of wrongdoing by the state police. Speaking to PTI, a senior police official said, “No witnesses came forward to challenge the police claims even after advertisements in newspapers and media. Also, no one from the media came forward to get their versions recorded.” There were, however, witnesses supporting the police version, he added.

Borrowing and worrying
F
rom all indications, the government of Nagaland appears keen to resolve the issue of the Securitisation and Reconstruction of Financial Assets and Enforcement of Securities Interest Act, 2002 (also known as the SARFAESI Act) for implementation in the state. The SARFAESI Act essentially empowers banks and other financial institutions to directly auction residential or commercial properties that have been pledged with them to recover loans from borrowers. Before this Act took effect, financial institutions had to take recourse to civil suits in the courts to recover their dues, which is a lengthy and time-consuming process. On May 5, 2020 the Supreme Court ruled that the provisions of the SARFAESI Act 2002, will be applicable to state and multi-state cooperative banks. By this Act, the lending financial institutions, after giving a notice period of 60 days, can take possession of the pledged assets of the borrower, take over the management of such assets, appoint any person to manage them or ask debtors of the borrower to pay their dues too, with respect to the asset. This recovery procedure saves banks and financial institutions a lot of time which otherwise would be long drawn out due to the intervention of courts. When SARFAESI Act was discussed at the recently concluded February assembly session, the leader of the house and chief minister Neiphiu Rio stressed on enabling the state’s business entrepreneurs obtain bank loans which would promote economic activities. Leader of the opposition T.R.Zeliang also shared similar views. The only issue that remains between pledged collateral to banks in the form of mortgage is Article 371(A) for Nagaland. Under 371(A) no Act of parliament with regard to land and its resources can be implemented in Nagaland unless the state assembly by a majority adopts a resolution. Therefore, both the leader of the house and the leader of the opposition suggested that the matter be referred to the house select committee. What has been heard since 2020 over the SARFAESI Act is that several organisations- trade and tribal-have backed implementation of the Act in the interest of thousands of youths requiring adequate bank loans to set up business enterprises in the state. By this Act, the lending financial institutions, after giving a notice period of 60 days, can take possession of the pledged assets of the defaulting borrower, take over the management of such assets, appoint any person to manage them or ask debtors of the borrower to pay their dues too, with respect to the asset. The SARFAESI Act, thus ends unending legal suits in courts by giving banks and lending institutions the option for recovery of loans without having to take legal recourse. Nagaland Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CNCCI) and Central Nagaland Tribes Council(CNTC) have also expressed support for SARFAESI Act but held that property including land mortgaged by local indigenous Nagas could be auctioned by the banks but only to local indigenous Nagas and not to outsiders. The issue of sale or auction to only indigenous Nagas of the state may also take a longer route since the process for identification of who is or who is not an indigenous inhabitant of Nagaland in the form of Register of Indigenous Inhabitant of Nagaland(RIIN) is taking longer than expected. Till a decision is taken in due course of time, SARFAESI Act could also be delayed.
DailyDevotion Don’t Hurt the Lord Have I been with you so long, and yet you have not known Me, Philip? —John 14:9 Our Lord must be repeatedly astounded at us— astounded at how “un-simple” we are. It is our own opinions that make us dense and slow to understand, but when we are simple we are never dense; we have discernment all the time. Philip expected the future revelation of a tremendous mystery, but not in Jesus, the Person he thought he already knew. The mystery of God is not in what is going to be— it is now, though we look for it to be revealed in the future in some overwhelming, momentous event. We have no reluctance to obey Jesus, but it is highly probable that we are hurting Him by what we ask— “Lord, show us the Father…” (John 14:8). His response immediately comes back to us as He says, “Can’t you see Him? He is always right here or He is nowhere to be found.” We look for God to exhibit Himself to His children, but God only exhibits Himself in His children. And while others see the evidence, the child of God does not. We want to be fully aware of what God is doing in us, but we cannot have complete awareness and expect to remain reasonable or balanced in our expectations of Him. If all we are asking God to give us is experiences, and the awareness of those experiences is blocking our way, we hurt the Lord. The very questions we ask hurt Jesus, because they are not the questions of a child. “Let not your heart be troubled…” (14:1, 27). Am I then hurting Jesus by allowing my heart to be troubled? If I believe in Jesus and His attributes, am I living up to my belief? Am I allowing anything to disturb my heart, or am I allowing any questions to come in which are unsound or unbalanced? I have to get to the point of the absolute and unquestionable relationship that takes everything exactly as it comes from Him. God never guides us at some time in the future, but always here and now. Realize that the Lord is here now, and the freedom you receive is immediate.

Post-mortem
Let us take action for the Planet
22nd April is International Mother Earth Day
W
e are all worried as the virus is causing more issues. People have become more concerned as it has hit once again. There is no doubt that all of us are worried but at the same time Mother Nature and the planet is also under pressure. The planet is losing 4.7 million hectares of forests every year – an area larger than Denmark. It is estimated that around one million animal and plant species are now threatened with extinction. We are aware that a healthy ecosystem helps to protect us from these diseases. Biological diversity makes it difficult for pathogens to spread rapidly. Climate change, man-made changes to nature as well as crimes that disrupt biodiversity, such as deforestation, land-use change, intensified agriculture and livestock production or the growing illegal wildlife trade, can increase contact and the transmission of infectious diseases from animals to humans (zoonotic diseases) like COVID-19. From one new infection disease that emerges in humans every 4 months, 75% of these emerging diseases come from animals, according to UN Environment. This shows the close relationships between human, animal and environmental health. Ecosystems support all life on Earth. The healthier our ecosystems are, the healthier the planet - and its people. Restoring our damaged ecosystems will help to end poverty, combat climate change and prevent mass extinction. The UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration, which will officially launch with World Environment Day 2021 (5 June), will help us stop, halt, and reverse the degradation of ecosystems on every continent and every ocean. But we will only succeed if everyone plays a part.
Coronavirus outbreak poses huge public health and global economy at risk, but biological diversity as well. However, biodiversity can be part of the solution since this diversity of species would make difficult to pathogens to spread rapidly. Let’s remind more than ever in this International Mother Earth Day that we need a shift to a more sustainable economy that works for both people and the planet. Let’s promote harmony with nature and the Earth. Join the global movement to restore our world! The United Nations General Assembly designated 22nd April as International Mother Earth Day through a resolution adopted in 2009. The original roots go back to the 1970s when environmental protection was not yet a priority of the national political agendas. On International Mother Earth Day, let us all commit to the hard work of restoring our planet and making peace with nature as the planet is clearly urging a call to action. Let us come forward and protect the nature, let us not fill oceans with plastic and turn more acidic. All of us can make a difference and it is possible to take action. We need commitments for the mother earth at an urgent basis. Even small step contribute towards sustainability but we need will to do it. Governments, international agencies, corporate, media, civil society and every individual have to play positive role when it comes to conservation and safeguarding our mother earth. Let us not forget that we do not have any other planet to live in. We must take action for the planet. Ambedkar, a torchbearer of social transformation
M
uch revered Bodhisattva, Bharat Ratna, Baba Saheb Dr. Ambedkar, the harbinger of social transformation and revolution imbibed in the ideas of great personalities like Buddha, Kabir, Mahatma Phule was born to divert the currents of the era and tides if time. The multifaceted personality of Baba Saheb is so deep, vast and diversified that, it would not be wrong to assert that, it would take years even for an erudite scholar to understand and fathom its depth. On the Occasion of the 130th birth anniversary of Babasaheb on April 14, 2021, the entire world in its heartfelt offering will seek inspiration from his indomitable spirit. Prime Minister Narendra Modi ji inaugurated Dr. Ambedkar National Memorial at Dr. Ambedkar International Center, 15 Janpath, New Delhi and Babasaheb’s Mahaparinirvana Bhoomi 26, Alipur Road, New Delhi, in the year 2017-18. Following the instructions of the Prime Minister, today these centers are acting as vehicles of socio-economic transformation through research in the field of social and economic studies. It will also serve as an expert think tank with a focus on inclusive development and socio-economic matters. In fact, the aim of our government is to bring to light the vision of Babasaheb’s thoughts and philosophy to the new generation through these centers. The present generation is largely unaware of Babasaheb being the most educated person among his contemporaries which was the result and product of his long-term struggle, determination and hard work. The great man had himself experienced all the ills and inhuman evils which penetrated into the social fabric with time, such as untouchability, discrimination, contempt, etc. However,
Babasaheb never resorted to violence, but burnt the candle of his life trying to unify society, by giving the disadvantaged class its due reputation in society. He was committed throughout his life to give a strong, selfreliant and dignified life to the downtrodden, exploited and deprived in the society. Babasaheb believed that social equality can be achieved only by creating social harmony. He said in Delhi on 24 November 1947, “We are all Indian mutual brothers such a feeling is expected.” This is called BandhuBhava, which is lacking, resulting in increasing cases of envy and jealousy. Therefore, for the nation to exist, this barrier will have to be removed, only then the nation will exist and brotherhood will flourish, if brotherhood fails to exist, equality, freedom too will become nonexistent. I believe that, just as our government today is working to reestablish India, as the VishwaGuru, Babasaheb too made similar efforts of contribution in the process of nation building. He revered Bharat Mata not only in greatest esteem, but was always concerned about the reestablishment of her honour. He opposed the prominence of competitive allegiance to religion, culture, caste and language, as he believed it to be a great hinderance in the cultivation of the feeling of Indianness and loyalty towards the nation. Opposing the formation of states on the basis of language, establishment of Hindi as the national language, education and quality of Sanskrit language, opposition to section 370, his views on conversion, idea of utility of religion, importance of labour policy, reform, urbanization, equal citizens, The Code and the Hindu Code Bill, importance given to the Srimad Bhagavad Gita, sensitivity towards women, national commit-

‘All-gene RT-PCR test can catch new Covid-19 strain’
mesh Singh of Lucknow, who runs a pharmaceutical company, had symptoms of coronavirus four days ago when he got his Reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RTPCR) test done but the report came out negative. When his condition continued to deteriorate, he quarantined himself and got himself tested again. The report came out negative but he is currently undergoing treatment at home. Similarly, Ankush Tripathi of Lucknow showed early signs of Covid-19. He underwent an RT-PCR test whose report turned out to be negative. His health condition also did not deteriorate much. He experienced a sore throat and difficulty in breathing. At present, he is currently undergoing treatment while in home quarantine. He is slowly recovering from the infection. The new strain of virus during the second wave of the pandemic is completely different from the first. People are experiencing Covid symptoms but the test report is negative. Whether it is the Rapid Antigen test or the RT-PCR test it is difficult to catch hold of the virus. Ram Shankar Upadhyay, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Lexai Life Sciences Pvt. Ltd., Hyderabad, and chief scientist of Om Oncology, US, said, “The new strain that has come in is hard to detect during testing. The patient’s sample should be taken properly. To take the sample, a trained person should take both nasal samples. Samples should be taken from inside the nasopha-
ment, economic plans, role in water and power policy, etc. are many topics that reflect Babasaheb’s national vision. Regarding the creator of the Constitution, Dr. Rajendra Babu says on 26 November 1949 in the Savindhan Sabha, “Dr. Ambedkar, the architect of Constitution of the independent India gave the country a new constitution at the cost of his intelligence, talent and merit. Profoundly rich men of such mental caliber, stature and eternal talent seldom appear in the world. On one hand bearing years of unending suffering and humiliation, while filled with compassion love, equality and nonviolence on the other hand, Babasaheb gave the perfect example of his dedication for the country adopting Buddhism as an inseparable part of Indian culture. It is my belief that the present generation must learn from Babasaheb’s life lessons that for larger national interest, personal trauma needs to be and should to be forgotten. On April 14, entire world will venerate and salute, the true son of Bharat Mata, Babasaheb. Entire India will evoke and remember his immense contribution for India. The world too will recall Babasaheb’s contribution, as the cause of inspiration to the millions of people. But I have a special message for the younger generation, that the patriot, humanist, pious and great saint of virtue Babasaheb’s ideals should not be merely followed on his birth anniversary, but should be borne every moment to be assimilated into life. With this, I convey my greetings of Babasaheb’s birth anniversary to my countrymen. Rattan Lal Kataria (Rattan Lal Kataria is the Union Minister of State, Social Justice & Empowerment and Jal Shakti)

ryngeal cavity in the nose. A sample stick cotton should reach the oropharyngeal cavity to take out a sample in the mouth. In addition, the sample stick cotton should be rotated for three to four seconds. If the sample is not taken properly, it would be extremely difficult to identify the infection.” He said, “The design of the earlier RT-PCR kit was in line with the virus pattern during 2020. Now the genetic structure of the infection has changed. Due to this a lot of infected cases will not be detected. Even before, the accuracy of an RT-PCR test was 80 per cent. As much as 20 per cent false positive or negative reports were found. This accuracy has further slumped. A lot of viruses have changed. The RT-PCR test will have to be updated if one needs to find it out.” “All-genes RT-PCR test will have to be done for that purpose. O, R, S A, B, R are all types of genes. Suppose someone is vulnerable to the new virus, he undergoes an RTPCR test. If the virus is in the ‘S’ gene, the RT-PCR test will not show anything, in this case the chances of confirmation of virus in the report will be reduced. Instead, if we will do an all gene RT-PCR test, even if there is a virus in any gene, it will be detected. Later, the virus will change its shape. The government laboratories should be upgraded. Regular genome sequencing surveillance should be continued. From this, it will be known how the mutation in the strain is inside the people. People will become aware before this strain spreads among
them and the RT-PCR kit will also be updated. Government laboratories should continue to make efforts to increase genome and serological surveillance within the country. Gene RTPCR test should cost between Rs 700-Rs 1,000.” Upadhyay has been an Assistant Professor at Uppsala University, Sweden, for over a decade and has also worked in Max Planck Germany (Berlin) and Medicinal Research Council, UK (London), Ranbaxy and Lupine. Dr Sheetal Verma of the Department of Micro Biology, King George Medical hospital, says, “There are many different types of kits available. I am testing a variety of genes. The old kit is being tested. There are no guidelines on how to change the kit right now. It has been seen in some patients that their report is negative on undergoing RT-PCR test. But they still have symptoms of Covid-19. They can be treated for coronavirus by undergoing a CT scan and placing them in some different areas.” “If the RT-PCR test is negative and if the symptoms of coronavirus are present then the way of taking the sample will have to be changed. The infection is at a very low level. The risk of spreading to others is less. Samples are now being taken from the people’s throat but it also needs to be taken from mucus as well. The decisions related to the testing and kit are issued by the Union Health Ministry and the Indian Council of Medical Research. No institution can implement it on its own behalf.” (IANS feature)
Faster jabs, surveillance can only tame triple-mutant Indian virus
ncreasing efforts towards faster mass vaccination and virus surveillance is the key to ward off dangers posed by a triple-mutant coronavirus now present in the country, health experts said on Wednesday. The B1617 variant, first detected in Maharashtra, contains mutations from two separate virus variants -- E484Q and L452R. The third mutation evolved from the double mutation where three different Covid strains combined to form a new variant. Two of these triple-mutant varieties have been found in samples collected from Maharashtra, Delhi, West Bengal and Chhattisgarh. The RNA virus has the potential to acquire mutations as it replicates and spreads. These mutations can, sometimes, result in virus variants with better adaptability to its environment. “As the virus spreads, it gets more opportunities to acquire mutations and evolve at a faster rate. This is a natural aspect of virus life-cycle but it is very important that we track these changes (virus surveillance) and follow the important viral characteristics associated with these mutations,” Dr Veena P. Menon, Faculty-In-Charge, Clinical Virology Laboratory, Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences, Kochi, told IANS. While the SARS-CoV2, causing the Covid-19 infections, has evolved at a much slower rate compared to Influenza or HIV viruses but as the number of infections rises, we are observing a rapid emergence of numerous viral variants. With the increase in the number of infections and spread, there are more opportunities for the virus to mutate. “As the infections are increasing at an alarming rate, there is a very high likeli-
hood that we will encounter more virus variants in our population. Some of these variants get selected for faster transmissibility (spread) or ‘increased severity’ (more pathogenic) and also “immune (vaccine) escape”, Menon explained. The evidence so far suggests that none of the important virus variants are associated with increased severity. However, an increased transmissibility is associated with the UK variant (lineage B1.1.7) while the Brazilian and South African variants exhibit ability to escape vaccine-induced immunity. “Mutation in the respiratory virus is a natural process. This process is augmented in situations of high spread and presence of vaccinated people in the community. We will see more variants in India in future too,” Dr Harshal R. Salve, Associate Professor at Centre for Community Medicine, AIIMS New Delhi, told IANS. Stricter implementation of public health infection control measures like usage of masks, social distancing and vaccinations are all key to prevent the spread. Besides, the need is to continue monitoring the virus evolution, the experts said. “Combining genetic surveillance methods with evaluation of the biological and clinical characteristics of these virus variants will aid in better understanding virus variants and its clinical and public health impact,” Menon added. Vaccinations can play a great role in curbing the spread of Covid. Covaxin, developed by Bharat Biotech, is able to “effectively neutralise” the double mutant strains, including the UK variant and the Brazil variant of the coronavirus, the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) said in a report. Reader’s Post Sir,
Lockdown and our PM
The Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, on Tuesday (20/4/2021) evening, in his address to the Nation, appealed to the State Governments to use lockdown as a last resort, so that economic activities can continue. This is in sharp contrast to his own action to impose sudden and strict nation-wide lockdown on 25th March 2020, with a notice of just FOUR hours. This brought immense hardship on the people of the country. Tuesday’s appeal by the Prime Minister is a tacit admission of the grave mistake and hara-kiri created on the Nation, over a year back. Recently, mass election rallies were allowed to go on, and many of these were addressed by the PM himself. Moreover, a super-spreader, but avoidable, event like the Kumbh Mela was allowed to take place. The union Government continues to make mistakes after mistakes to ensure that pandemic spreads rapidly, and bring hardships to the people of the country. The country and its people deserves much better. D Bhutia, RGB Road, Guwahati

22 COVID-19 patients die after 2nd COVID wave Modi-made disaster: Mamata oxygen tank leak in Nashik hospital
Mamata Banerjee
Night curfew in Goa from 10 pm to 6 am
Amid the unprecedented surge in the number of Covid-19 cases in Goa, Chief Minister Pramod Sawant said on Wednesday that a night curfew would be imposed in the state from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m., even as casinos and hotels will be allowed to function post curfew hours at 50 per cent capacity. Sawant also said that the restrictions would be in place till April 30, after which the Covid scenario in the state would be reviewed. Casinos, bars and restaurants, river cruises, water parks, entertainment parks, gyms, massage parlours, cinema halls, multiplexes and public transports will be allowed to operate at 50 per cent capacity only, Sawant said. Class X and XII board exams, which were scheduled to be held over the next two months, have also been postponed and a decision
on the future dates would be taken after April 30, Sawant said. Elections to five municipal councils scheduled on April 23 will, however, be held with strict implementation of the Covid SOPs, he said.
patients and started shifting some of the patients,” an official said. The leakage was stopped, the tank repaired and the oxygen supply was normalised, he said. Soon after the incident, people rushed to the hospital hindering rescue operations.“An oxygen tanker had reached the hospital premises when the leak happened. Technicians who came with that tanker and technicians at the hospital broke open the lock of the tank and closed the valve which prevented the further leakage of oxygen,” he said. The municipal corporation shifted cylinders from other facilities in the city to help the patients at the hospital after the leak, which was noticed around 12.30 pm, an official said. Hospital officials then contacted municipal commissioner Kailash Jadhav seeking technical help to stop the leakage.

NEW DELHI, APR 21 (PTI): Senior Congress leader P Chidambaram on Wednesday held the BJP responsible for the “medical catastrophe” in the country and urged the people of West Bengal to speak for the entire nation while voting in the ongoing assembly polls. The sixth phase of the assembly election in the state will be held on Thursday. “An election is to hold the government accountable. The BJP is solely responsible for the medical catastrophe that has fallen on the country. The hopes of the entire nation are in the hands of the voters of W(est) Bengal,” Chidambaram tweeted. “Voters in the 6th round of polling in West Bengal tomorrow (22 April) have a great opportunity to speak for the entire coun-

try,” he said. The Congress leader condemned the current situation due to COVID-19 in the country. “What has changed since April 2020? If anything, things have become much worse,” he said. Chidambaram also said the plight of migrant workers, as shown on TV, in long queues outside railway and bus stations was “heart rending”. “There is no shortage of vaccines, says Health Minister. Believe the minister. There is only a shortage of patients. Central government will issue an advertisement calling for applications from patients who want vaccines,” he said in another tweet. “There is no crowding at railway stations, says Railway minister. Believe the minister. The long queues shown on TV channels are there only to assist the Railway Police to guard the stations,” he added. The Congress has been critical of the handling of the pandemic in India, where the COVID-19 infection tally climbed to 1,56,16,130 on Wednesday, with 2,95,041 new cases, while the active caseload surpassed the 21-lakh mark.

We don’t want people to go back to those days of staying back at home. Lockdown is not a solution as it takes a heavy toll on people, jobs and economy,” she said. NASHIK/ M UM BAI, APR 21 (PTI): Twenty-two COVID-19 patients, who were either on ventilator or oxygen support, suffocated to death on Wednesday when their oxygen supply stopped suddenly because of a malfunction in the main storage at a civic-run hospital at Nashik in Maharashtra, officials said. The incident occurred in the afternoon at Dr Zakir Husain Hospital in Dwarka area of the city. Confusion prevailed in the evening over the exact number of fatalities in the incident. While District Collector Suraj Mandhare claimed that two more COVID-19 patients at the hospital succumbed in the evening due to the oxygen supply issue, Nashik Divisional Commissioner Radhakrishna Game said late night that the death of these two patients was not linked to the leakage incident. The Maharashtra government announced a probe by a seven-member committee into the incident and Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray said that financial assistance of Rs five lakh would be provided to the families of each victim. The disr uption of medical oxygen supply was caused by leakage from a storage plant, officials said. An official said the incident occurred when oxygen was being filled in one of the tanks from a tanker, which disturbed the supply to the patients who were on ventilators as well as to

The chief minister claimed that her government has done a lot for the welfare of Rajbanshis, an ethnic group inhabiting parts of North Bengal, Assam and Meghalaya, and minorities in the state. Banerjee urged the people “not to allow division of votes” and to unitedly support the TMC. She said if the TMC is re-elected for a third consecutive term, her government will arrange soft loans of up to Rs 10 lakh for higher education. Addressing a gathering in the Muslim-dominated Malda district, Banerjee asked the electorate to cast their votes in favour of the TMC irrespective of their religious beliefs as it is the “only party which has not allowed any division on grounds of religion”.

C H A N C H A L / HARIRAMPUR/BALURGHAT (WB), APR 21 (PTI): West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday sharpened her attack on the prime minister over the resurgence of Covid-19, terming it a “Modi-made disaster” and demanded that he quit if unable to provide adequate medical supplies to combat the disease. She also ruled out the possibility of a lockdown in the state amid spurting COVID-19 cases and said a universal vaccination drive for people aged 18 years and above will start from May 5. She alleged that 65 per cent of the drugs manufactured in the country for tackling the pandemic have already been exported. “The Covid-19 pandemic had subsided in the country but has surged in a second wave owing to the monumental failure of the central government and negligence and total incompetence on its part,” she said
against COVID in the state. Hitting out at Prime Minister Narendra Modi at her election rallies, Banerjee said, “The country is facing a Modi-made disaster. Modi Babu will have to take responsibility. Why medicines to treat COVID-19 are not available? You have to provide medicines or leave the chair. Either you control Corona or move out.” “The second Covid wave is more intense. There are no injections or oxygen. Vaccines and medicines are being shipped abroad even as there is a scarcity of these items in the country,” she earlier told a rally at Balurghat in Dakshin Dinajpur district. “It is not a man-made disaster, it is Modi made.” She added. Alleging that 65 per cent of drugs manufactured in the country to treat coronavirus have been exported, she said, while medicines may be given to other countries, it has to be also ensured that Indians get adequate supply on a priority basis. “The BJP is attempting to break the spine of

Hyundai will only sell Kona EVs in stock for the domestic market, while continuing to export them to overseas markets, company officials said. “The production of Kona EVs has been halted since March in consideration of the domestic demand and to realign the assembly line for new EVs,” a company spokesperson said. “(The company) will continue to export Kona EVs to overseas markets.” In October, Hyundai launched facelifted versions of the Kona for gasoline, hy-

Hyundai sold over 10,000 units of Kona EVs in South Korea in 2018 and 2019, but sales dropped to about 8,000 units last year following a series of fires in its batteries and the automaker’s mishandling of the recall programme, reports Yonhap news agency. The automaker sold only 984 units in the domestic market in the first quarter, a 40 percent drop from a year earlier, while its overseas sales fell 17.9 percent on-year to 7,428 units, its financial reports showed.

Triple mutation strain detected
(From p-1) How infectious the triple mutation is, or how deadly, will be known only from more studies. For now, only 10 labs across India are involved in virus genome studies. The double mutant shows increased transmission rate and is seen to affect children too. It has more severe pathogenicity, say scientists. For now, the triple mutation has been classified in India as a “variant of interest” rather than “variant of concern”. Will existing vaccines work against the triple mutation? Two of the three variants in the triple mutation have been seen to have immune escape responses, meaning they are more resistant to antibodies. Not much more is known yet on the effectiveness of vaccines. Scientists believe the new variant has some ability to escape the body’s naturally acquired immunity to Covid.

of 10.2 per cent. The spread of the virus in Maharashtra had led to the announcement of a “lockdown” by the state government which began in a less stringent manner from the first week of April, it said. Factoring the potential loss of economic output due to the restrictions in the state, the agency, on April 5, lowered its GDP forecast for the current fiscal year to 10.7-10.9 per cent. But the “lockdown” was made more obtrusive to business activity by April 20, with more stringency expected for the forthcoming fortnight, it added. Further, the spread of the virus to other states has caused similar actions by governments which have ranged from night curfews and weekend lockdowns to full lockdowns. The report said two events in the
litical leaders, tribal and community leaders and families to encourage and recall defectors to rejoin parent groups, adding defection was an anti-Naga act at this juncture and would be treated accordingly. Referring to reports of Niki Sumi’s group being treated cordially with all daily expenses and basic amenities by Indian security forces and State government under direct orders from Union ministry of home affairs (MHA), WC, NNPGs appealed to the group to desist from burdening Naga public with tax demands through threats and intimidations. It said summoning of nonlocal traders through rear gate at one of the group’s location in Dimapur was reportedly a daily affair. WC felt that this was a time for all groups to reason, reassess and forge a path to common future, and not a time to pull a political stunt, create fear psychosis and indulge in rampant taxation.

New Delhi, Apr 21 (Agencies): With economic activities getting affected across the country due to curbs imposed by states amid surge in COVID19 cases, Care Ratings has revised down its forecast for GDP growth to 10.2 per cent in 2021-22 from earlier projection of 10.7-10.9 per cent. This is the third revision by the rating agency in the last one month, News18 reported. We have revised our forecast for GDP growth for FY22 as the underlying conditions have changed rapidly in the last 30 days or so. It stands now at 10.2 per cent, Care Ratings said in a report. On March 24, 2021, the agency had projected GDP growth between 1111.2 per cent based on GVA (gross value added) growth
country — state elections and Kumbh Mela — have seen millions of people coming together with social distancing norms not being followed. This has potential to spread the virus at an exponential rate throughout the country and several states have announced measures to test people returning from the pilgrimage, it said. The agency said the post-election lockdowns in five states/ UT –Assam, West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Puducherry– can be expected once polling is completed and more people are tested for COVID-19. The rating agency had projected GVA (gross value added) to increase from Rs 124.11 lakh crore (FY21) to Rs 136.82 lakh crore (FY22) which was an increase of 10.2 per cent. With a potential fall in output of Rs 1.13 lakh crore, GVA will be Rs 135.69 lakh crore and growth will be 9.3 per cent. As tax collections too would be affected, there would be an impact on GDP growth which is now placed at 10.2 per cent. According to the agency, the loss in GDP this year due to the lockdowns would be to the extent of 0.8-1 per cent from our earlier estimate of 11-11.2 per cent.

Myanmar: economy hit amid refugee crisis Bangkok, Apr 21 (AP): Aid workers and activists are warning Myanmar’s political upheavals risk causing a regional refugee crisis as the strife following a February coup displaces growing numbers of people who have lost their livelihoods. Tom Andrews, the UN special rapporteur for Myanmar, said violence has left nearly 250,000 people displaced. As Myanmar’s neighbors prepare for a summit this week to discuss the coup, he and other rights advocates are warning that the situation could spiral out of control. “The world must act immediately to address this humanitarian catastrophe,” Andrews said in a Twitter post on Wednesday. A mass civil disobedience movement and efforts by security forces to crush it have left many out of work. Disruptions of internet service by authorities are also wrecking the means many in the impoverished country rely on to make a living. The 10-member Association of Southeast Asian

Anti-coup protesters walk through a market with images of ousted Myanmar leader Aung San Suu Kyi in Yangon, Myanmar.
Nations, or ASEAN, called a meeting Saturday on the crisis that has left more than 700 civilians dead, according to the Assistance Association for Political Prisoners, which tracks the casualties since the military takeover. ASEAN’s stance of non-interference in each others’ internal matters, and the relatively undemocratic nature of many of the members own governments, has left Myanmar’s neighbors wary of imposing any sanctions against the regime that seized power from the elected civilian government of Aung San Suu Kyi. She has been imprisoned along with more
than 3,000 others. The growing number of people fleeing bombings and other violence by Myanmar forces “is something they (ASEAN) want to remain in control of. Refugees spilling over the borders are not internal, it becomes a regional issue,” said Sally Thompson, executive director of The Border Consortium, the main provider of food, shelter and other support to refugees from Myanmar for more than three decades. “It is the ASEAN countries that can put pressure on Myanmar because they are a trading bloc,” Thompson said in a briefing at the Foreign
Correspondents Club of Thailand. She estimated that about 7,000 people were camped along the Salween River on the border with Thailand, with more than 1,000 hiding in Thai forests. That is only one area along borders that stretch from India to the west to China and Thailand to the north and east. So far, most of those displaced are still within Myanmar, adding to those already having to flee due to long-running ethnic insurgencies. But fighting has disrupted their access to food and other necessities. “People have been finding areas of solace inside Myanmar still, but if this conflict broadens into the ethnic states along the border areas, you will see refugee flows,” James Rodehaver, Bangkok-based chief of the Myanmar team of the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, said at a recent seminar. The mass civil disobedience movement has left many Myanmar businesses, from banks to hospitals
to garment factories, shuttered. That has prompted people to flee from cities back to their home villages, burdening families that had relied on them for support. The troubles are amplified by the coronavirus pandemic, which raises risks of spreading outbreaks and also forced some migrant workers back to Myanmar from Thailand and other countries. “The economy in Myanmar is collapsing. Salaries are no longer being paid. People’s livelihoods are disappearing as they are in hiding for their own safety,” Thompson said. “The entire country is headed for a humanitarian crisis.” So far, most of the sanctions taken to try to compel Myanmar’s military leaders to reverse the coup and restore the elected government have been adopted by Western governments. That includes banning business with major military-affiliated companies that dominate many industries, including the lucrative gems and jade trade.
Pro-Navalny protesters to hit the streets across Russia
In several Russian cities, authorities sealed off city centres ahead of the planned protests.
M o s c ow, A p r 2 1 (IANS): Supporters of ailing Kremlin critic Alexei Navalny plan to defy authorities and stage protests across Russia on Wednesday to demand he receive lifesaving medical care. Navalny’s team has said the 44-year-old’s health is quickly deteriorating at the prison camp where he is being held, DPA reported. They announced protests in more than 160 Russian cities and towns to draw attention to his plight and
clamour for prison authorities to allow him access to independent doctors. The leading opposition figure, who narrowly survived an assassination attempt last year, has been complaining of severe back pain and paralysis in his arms and legs. To protest a lack of medical care, he went on hunger strike about three weeks ago. In several Russian cities, authorities sealed off city centres ahead of the planned protests.
In the city of Yekaterinburg, the local administration announced the temporary closure of several streets at short notice, citing a night-time military exercise. In Moscow, numerous metal barriers were erected not far from Red Square. Nearby, not only were Navalny supporters planning to demonstrate in the evening, but President Vladimir Putin was also scheduled to deliver his annual address to the nation in the afternoon.

Indonesia says submarine missing with 53 on board Jakarta, Apr 21 (AP): The Indonesian navy is searching for a submarine that went missing near the resort island of Bali with 53 people on board, the military said Wednesday. Military chief Hadi Tjahjanto said the KRI Nanggala 402 was participating in a training exercise when it missed a scheduled reporting call. The submarine is believed to have disappeared in waters about 60 miles (95 kilometers) north of Bali, he said. Tjahjanto said the navy has deployed ships to search the area and has asked for help from Singapore and
Australia, which have submarine rescue vessels. Local media reports said the navy believes the ship sank into a trough at a depth of 700 meters (2,300 feet). There was no immediate information about why it went missing. The German-built submarine, which has been in service since the early 1980s, was rehearsing for a missile-firing exercise that was to take place on Thursday and be attended by Tjahjanto and other military leaders.
Columbus, Apr 21 (AP): The fatal shooting of a knife-wielding Black teenage girl by police in Columbus, Ohio, came within minutes of the verdict in George Floyd’s killing — causing outrage by some in the community over the continued police use of lethal force. Officials with the Columbus Division of Police released footage of the shooting Tuesday night just hours after it happened, a departure from protocol as the force faces immense scrutiny from the public following a series of recent high-profile police killings that have led to clashes. The 10-second clip begins with the officer getting out of his car at a house where police had been dispatched after someone called 911 saying they were being physically threatened, Interim Police Chief Michael Woods said at the news conference. The officer takes a few steps toward a group of people in the driveway when the girl starts swinging a knife wildly at another girl or woman, who falls backward.

Junk foods may damage your bones
D
oes your kid love to eat ultra-processed junk foods like packaged chips, soups, hot dogs and fries? Besides the increasing risk of obesity, eating junk foods can also affect your bones, warn researchers. A team of researchers from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem in Israel proved the linkages between ultra-processed foods and reduced bone quality, unveiling the damage of these foods particularly for younger children in their developing years in a rodent-study. The findings showed that the rodents experienced moderate damage to their bone density, albeit there were fewer indications of cartilage buildup in their growth plates. “Our conclusion was that even in reduced amounts, the ultra-processed foods can have a definite negative impact on skeletal growth,”said Efrat Monsonego-Ornan, Professor at the varsity.
The team surveyed lab rodents whose skeletons were in the post-embryonic stages of growth. The rodents that were subjected to ultra-processed foods suffered from growth retardation and their bone strength was adversely affected. Under histological examination, the researchers detected high levels of cartilage buildup in the rodents’ growth plates, the “engine” of bone growth. When subjected to additional tests of the rodent cells, the researchers found that the RNA genetic profiles of cartilage cells that had been subjected to junk food were showing characteristics of impaired bone development.
Olivia Colman says she would work in ‘The Father’ for free Dave Bautista told Warner Bros. he’s determined to play ‘Batman’ villain Bane
O
livia Colman, who has been nominated at the Oscars in the Best Supporting Actress category for her role in the Anthony Hopkins-starrer “The Father”, says working on the film was a dream come true, so much so she would do
it for free. Discussing what drew her to the project, Colman says: “For me, it’s always the writing that clinches it. If the script is good enough, that’s the way I’ll go.” “I’ve read the script again and again, but for all the complexity I think at its heart it’s very simple. It’s about loss and love, and the way you suffer when the person you love no longer knows you. The script is beautifully written and very moving. To work on something like ‘The Father’ has been a dream come true. I’d do it for free!” the actress adds. “The Father” stars Anthony Hopkins as an ageing man named Anthony who battles dementia. Colman plays his daughter Anne. The film is helmed by Florian Zeller, who makes his directorial debut with the project, based on his acclaimed West End play. The actress says she loved working with Zeller. “Some first-time directors can become a bit precious about their work. But Florian has been the opposite -- incredibly generous,
kind, and understanding. Christopher Hampton who has co-written and translated the screenplay, has also been very supportive,” Colman says. She adds that the film’s storyline about a father-daughter relationship struck a personal chord somewhere. “My lovely mum was a nurse specialising in geriatric care, and I remember as a child watching her with her patients. My parents are still young enough to take care of themselves, and the roles have not yet been reversed. But I saw my mum looking after granny, and so it won’t be long before I have to step up to the plate,” Colman says. “The Father” is among the top contenders at the upcoming Oscars with six nominations -- Best Film, Best Actor (Anthony Hopkins), Best Supporting Actress (Olivia Colman), Best Adapted Screenplay (Florian Zeller and Christopher Hampton), Best Film Editing (Yorgos Lamprinos), and Best Production Design (Peter Francis and Cathy Featherstone). The film is released in India on April 23 by PVR Pictures. (IANS)

The actor, who has been saying on social media for years that he would love to play the character, has now revealed he organised a meeting with the film studios to reiterate his request. “I want to play Bane so bad I went to Warner Bros., had an appointment with them, had an appointment with DC, walked in the door and said, ‘I want to play Bane,’” the actor said during an appearance at JusticeCon (per Collider). Tom Hardy played Bane in 2012’s The Dark Knight Rises, but the character has not been revived or played by any other actors since. Bautista added: “I’m not kidding. They were a little like. ‘Woah, we’re not even
The team then sought to analyse how specific eating habits might impact bone development and replicated this kind of food intake for the rodents. They divided the rodents’ weekly nutritional intake -- 30 per cent came from a ‘controlled’ diet, and 70 per cent from ultraprocessed foods. “Even if we reduce fats, carbs, nitrates and other known harmful substances, these foods still possess their damaging attributes. Every part of the body is prone to this damage and certainly those systems that remain in the critical stages of development,” Monsonego-Ornan said. (IANS)
casting Bane.’ I was like ‘I don’t care, I’m playing him.’” Elsewhere, Bautista recently said he was told he was “too big” to play a zombie on The Walking Dead. “I’m a zombie fan,” Bautista told Empire. “I tried to get on Walking Dead for years, I said I would come and play a zombie for free, but they said, ‘You’re too big!’” Dave Bautista will next be playing the lead role in Zack Snyder’s zombie-heist Netflix film Army of the Dead alongside Tig Notaro, Garret Dillahunt, Omari Hardwick and more. The film will be released worldwide on May 21. (NME)
Luke Evans wants James Bond role
L
uke Evans wants to play James Bond. The 42-year-old actor has revealed that he would “jump at the chance” to become the second Welsh 007 after Timothy Dalton but adds that the prospect of succeeding Daniel Craig, who is set to leave the franchise after the upcoming ‘No Time To Die’, would be “daunting”. Asked about the possibility of playing the iconic spy, Luke told the Daily Mirror newspaper: “I think I’ve cut my teeth very well in movies I’ve done and I’ve enjoyed every second of it. “It’s a phenomenal job, a phenomenal franchise, an incredible role. I have to say
though, it’s a daunting task for any actor to play the role after Daniel Craig.” The ‘Midway’ star continued: “No one knows what’s happening. It’s a very secretive process and it’s a wonderful role. I’d jump at the chance, as would many actors in my position, so we shall see. “It will be an exciting casting moment for the Bond production, I wish whoever gets it the best of luck.” Luke is set to play the role of villain The Coachman in Disney’s new version of ‘Pinocchio’ and feels that director Robert Zemeckis will bring a fresh perspective to the classic story. espiratory droplets are the most prominent source of transmission for Covid-19. However, flushing a toilet can generate large quantities of microbe-containing aerosols depending on the design, water pressure or flushing power of the toilet at public restrooms, an Indian-origin researchers-led study has warned. Public restrooms are especially cause for concern for transmitting Covid-19 because they are relatively confined, experience heavy foot traffic and may not have adequate ventilation. According to researchers, a variety of pathogens are usually found in stagnant water as well as in urine, faeces and vomit. “After about three hours of tests involving more than 100 flushes, we found a substantial increase in the measured aerosol levels in the ambient environment with the total number of droplets generated in each flushing test ranging up to the tens of thousands,” said Siddhartha Verma, co-author and an Assistant Professor in Florida Atlantic University’s Department K Y M C
of Ocean and Mechanical Engineering in the US. The droplets were detected at heights of up to 5 feet for 20 seconds or longer after initiating the flush. Researchers detected a smaller number of droplets in the air when the toilet was flushed with a closed lid, although not by much, suggesting that aerosolised droplets escaped through small gaps between the cover and the seat. “Both the toilet and urinal generated large quantities of droplets smaller than 3 micrometers in size, posing a significant transmission risk if they contain infectious microorganisms. Due to their small size, these droplets can remain
suspended for a long time,” Verma said. When dispersed widely through aerosolisation, these pathogens can cause Ebola, norovirus that results in violent food poisoning, as well as Covid-19 caused by SARS-CoV-2, according to a team of scientists from Florida Atlantic University’s College of Engineering. The team once again put physics of fluids to the test to investigate droplets generated from flushing a toilet and a urinal in a public restroom under normal ventilation conditions. To measure the droplets, they used a particle counter placed at various heights of the toilet and urinal to capture the size and
number of droplets generated upon flushing. Results of the study, published in the journal Physics of Fluids, demonstrate how public restrooms could serve as hotbeds for airborne disease transmission, especially if they do not have adequate ventilation or if toilets do not have a lid or cover. Most public restrooms often are not equipped with toilet seat lids and urinals are not covered. There was a 69.5 per cent increase in measured levels for particles sized 0.3 to 0.5 micrometres, a 209 per cent increase for particles sized 0.5 to 1 micrometres, and a 50 per cent increase for particles sized 1 to 3 micrometres. “The study suggests that incorporation of adequate ventilation in the design and operation of public spaces would help prevent aerosol accumulation in high occupancy areas such as public restrooms,” said Manhar Dhanak, chair of FAU’s Department of Ocean and Mechanical Engineering, and professor and director of SeaTech. Super League collapse as 10 clubs withdraw All 6 Premier League clubs, Italian clubs and Atlético Madrid pull out
Only Real Madrid and Barcelona remain in European Super League Madrid, Apr 21 (AFP): Atlético Madrid, Inter Milan, AC Milan, and Juventus all dropped out of the Super League on Wednesday, leaving the new competition essentially extinct before it even started. Only Spanish clubs Real Madrid and Barcelona are still officially involved. The moves by Atlético, Inter, AC Milan, and Juventus came a day after the six Premier League clubs involved in the project made it unviable by giving up on the controversial breakaway competition. English clubs Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester United, Manchester City, and Tottenham deserted plans for the largely-closed competition amid an escalating backlash from their supporters and warnings from the government that legislation could be introduced to thwart them. The Super League project was overseen by Real Madrid president Florentino Pérez, who pro-

moted it as a way to “save football” and the clubs struggling financially amid the coronavirus pandemic. Neither Madrid nor Barcelona commented after the rest of the clubs abandoned the project. There was some internal pressure on the Catalan club, however, after outspoken captain Gerard Piqué made his view clear. “Football belongs to the fans. Today more than ever,” he wrote on Twitter early Wednesday. On Monday, UEFA threatened to ban players from the participating teams from playing in this year’s European Championship and next year’s World Cup. But a Madrid court later issued a preliminary ruling stopping UEFA, FIFA, and their members from acting
against the creation of the new league. AC Milan signaled they are leaving a few hours after Atlético and Inter Milan made their announcements. “The voices and the concerns of fans around the world have clearly been expressed about the Super League, and AC Milan must be sensitive to the voice of those who love this wonderful sport,” the Italian club said. Juventus followed moments later, but didn’t completely abandon plans for a future Super League. “While Juventus remains convinced of the soundness of the project’s sport, commercial and legal premises, it believes that at present there are limited chances that the project be completed in the form orig-
inally conceived,” the club said. “Juventus remains committed to pursuing the creation of long-term value for the Company and the entire football industry.” Atlético said their decision was made after the board of directors met on Wednesday. The Spanish club said it “decided to formally communicate the Super League and the rest of the founding clubs its decision not to formalize its participation in the project.” Atlético said the “circumstances” that allowed it to join the new league on Monday “no longer existed today.” “For the club, harmony is essential for everyone involved in the Red and White family, especially our fans,” it said. “The first team squad and its coach showed satisfaction with the club’s decision, understanding that sporting merits must prevail over any other criteria.” Atlético fans had been expected to stage a protest before the home match against Huesca in the Spanish league on Thursday. Widespread protests by fans in England played a big part in the decision by the Premier League clubs
to leave the new competition. “ I k n ew t h e c l u b would make the right decision and that’s what happened,” Atlético coach Diego Simeone said. “This is good for everyone.” Inter said the club was committed to delivering the best soccer experience for fans because “innovation and inclusion have been part of our DNA since our foundation.” “Our commitment with all stakeholders to improve the football industry will never change,” the Italian club said. “Inter believe that football, like any sector of activity, must have an interest in constantly improving its competitions in order to continue to excite fans of all ages all over the world, within a framework of financial sustainability.” The Super League was intended to be a 20-team competition with 15 founding members guaranteed a spot every season and five other teams rotating in and out. The lack of relegation for the founding members raised concerns about the consequences for smaller clubs in the domestic leagues around the continent.
11 Japan organisers Olympic men’s football: may postpone fan Brazil, Germany in same pool limit decision Tokyo, Apr 21 (IANS): Tokyo Olympic organisers are considering delaying the decision on how many spectators will be allowed to enter venues as the country struggles with another wave of coronavirus infections. The organising committee may make the decision in June instead of drawing up a basic policy on capacity by the end of April, DPA reported. The organisers need to deal with the issue ‘flexibly’, its president Seiko Hashimoto had previously told a news conference. Overseas spectators are banned from attending this summer’s Games due to the coronavirus pandemic, the organisers had decided in March. To k y o G o v e r n o r Yuriko Koike told reporters on Tuesday that the Olympic host city was considering asking the central government to issue another coronavirus state of emergency amid a resurgence of infections. Tokyo confirmed 843 new infections on Wednesday, the largest daily cases in nearly three months. The central government may declare a third state of emergency in Tokyo, Osaka and Hyogo prefectures, local media reported.
Zurich, Apr 21 (IANS): Defending champions Brazil have been clubbed in the same group as powerhouse Germany in the men’s Olympic football tournament, the draw for which was announced in Zurich, Switzerland on Wednesday. Besides the two footballing giants, the other two teams in Group D are Côte d’Ivoire and Saudi Arabia. The group features a repeat of the 2016 Rio Olympics final, where the home favourites won on penalties after Max Meyer had cancelled out talismanic captain Neymar’s first-half free-kick. In Group C, Argentina, gold medallists at 2004 Athens 2004 and 2008 Beijing, take on 1992 Barcelona Olympic champions Spain in what is primed to be one of the most eagerly anticipated clashes of the group stage. They will be joined by Australia and Egypt. Japan have been drawn in Group A, where they will face off against South Africa, Mexico and France. The competition, which starts on July 22 at the Sapporo Dome in Tokyo, will begin with the hosts taking on a South Africa side that qualified for the Olympics
after a penalty shootout win against Ghana in the Junior Nations Cup. The opening round of the tournament has thrown up some tough challenges for Japan, with group opponents Mexico recently winning the CONCACAF Olympic qualifiers thanks, in no small part, to the prolific strike partnership of Sebastian Cordova and Uriel Antuna. France could also pose a significant threat to Japan, with a potential team of stars that includes Odsonne Edouard (Celtic), Colin Dagba (PSG), Jules Kounde (Sevilla) and Eduardo Kamavinga (Rennes), among others. This year, the men’s Olympic football tournament will be made up of players under the age of 24, with each participating country allowed to supplement their squad with three overage players. The draw: Group A: Japan, South Africa, Mexico, France. Group B: New Zealand, Korea Republic, Honduras, Romania. Group C: Egypt, Spain, Argentina, Australia. Group D: Brazil, Germany, Côte d’Ivoire, Saudi Arabia.

Again before half time, Dheeraj made a brilliant save to deny the visitors. FC Goa’s effort to find an equaliser through the second half, which included a few substitutions, did not bear fruit as they settled for a defeat. Even though the Iranian league champions dominated possession, FC Goa tried to put up a fight. This was FC Goa’s first defeat in the group stage as Persepolis claimed their third straight win. FC Goa had their moments, tried their best but that was not enough to secure them a third straight stalemate in their maiden appearance in the continent’s top-tier league. FC Goa were placed in the third spot after Tuesday’s result as Al Wahda’s Fares Juma headed in with the final touch of their game to secure a dramatic 3-2 win over Qatar’s Al Rayyan.

Don’t think too much about match-ups: Pant C h e nn a i , A p r 2 1 (IANS): Delhi Capitals captain Rishabh Pant said that he does not think about match-ups too much while playing and tries to play according to the situations. Pant was dismissed by fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah for seven runs during DC’s Indian Premier League (IPL) match on Tuesday against Mumbai Indians (MI). When asked if he had thought about the match-up between him and Bumrah, Pant said that he felt MI had no choice but to bring on the fast bowler. “As a player, you don’t focus on match-ups too much. It doesn’t matter what you are doing or what you have done before. Everyday is a new day in cricket. They bowled him (Jasprit Bumrah) because they had to bowl him at that time. There was no other option. I had to go for my shots because we were chasing. So I think you need to focus on the scenarios much more rather than match-ups,” said Pant in the post-match press conference. K Y M C
Berlin, Apr 21 (IANS): Bayern Munich moved within one victory of a record-extending ninth straight Bundesliga title with a 2-0 victory over Bayer Leverkusen while 10-man Schalke were relegated after losing 1-0 at Arminia Bielefeld. Eric-Maxim Choupo Moting and Joshua Kimmich were on target for Bayern in the opening 13 minutes on Tuesday, DPA reports. Bayer n moved 10 points clear of RB Leipzig, who crashed 2-1 at second last Cologne, and can wrap up the title with three games left on Saturday against lowly Mainz. Cologne’s win also meant that bottom side Schalke needed a victory to delay a fourth drop following 1981, 1983 and 1988 but Fabian Klos’ winner for Bielefeld sealed their fate. Playing their first game since Hansi Flick had announced he wanted to leave in summer, Bayern made their presence felt immediately against Leverkusen. Choupo-Moting, standing in again for top
scorer Robert Lewandowski who has back in team training from a knee injury and expected to play again on Saturday, smashed the opener into the roof of the net seven minutes into the game. Kimmich got the second six minutes later when he rifled into the top left corner from the edge of the area. Bayer n controlled the game with Choupo Moting denied a second by the offside flag while Leverkusen’s best chance came when Karim Bellarabi was denied by the crossbar. The win put Bayern on the brink because Leipzig faltered again after a 0-0 home draw Friday against Hoffenheim. Fo r m e r G e r m a n y defender Jonas Hector headed Cologne ahead less than a minute into the second half, and got the second with a low shot on the hour, a minute after Amadou Haidara smashed Leipzig’s equalizer. Cologne, who ended a run of nine games without victory in the second game under new coach Friedhelm Funkel, remain second-last

but are now tied on points with Hertha Berlin in the relegation playoff spot. Bielefeld, meanwhile, moved four points clear of the danger zone with their victor y from Klos’ 50th-minute effort against a Schalke team which had Thiaw dismissed in the 71st before Klos missed a penalty on the other end. The 21st season defeat clinched the drop for Schalke who were Bundesliga runners-up in 2018 but have been free falling since January 2020, winning just two of the last 46 league matches since then and garnering a mere 13 points this season. Bielefeld moved two points ahead of Augsburg who lost 2-0 at Eintracht Frankfurt from headers by Martin Hinteregger and Andre Silva which saw the hosts climb into third for at least 24 hours. Quite remarkably, FC Goa grabbed the lead when Edu Bedia headed in to the bottom right corner from the centre of the box in the 14th minute. Bedia was assisted by Brandon Fernandes following a set piece situation. But the Indian club’s joy was short-lived as Persepolis FC fought back strongly to not just equalise but also go ahead in the high-octane contest. Persepolis FC, last season’s runners-up in the Champions League, drew parity when Mahdi Torabi converted a penalty in the 18th minute. Soon enough, from a cross by Mahdi Torabi following a corner, Seyed Jalal Hosseini unleashed a header from close range to put the fancied visitors ahead in the 24th minute at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium. The Goans were forced to make an early substitution as Amarjit Singh replaced Adil Khan in the 29th minute because of an injury. Persepolis FC had a

CSK beat KKR by 18 runs in high scoring encounter
Mumbai/Chennai, Apr 21 (Agencies/ IANS): Andre Russell’s cracking 22-ball 54 and Pat Cummins’ quickfire knock went in vain as Chennai Super Kings (CSK) beat Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) by 18 runs on Wednesday to make it three wins in a row in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021. In a high-scoring encounter at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, CSK survived a late scare from Cummins to edge out KKR. In pursuit of a big target of 221 runs, KKR were off to a poor start as Deepak Chahar inflicted a top-order collapse with a four-wicket haul. However, Andre Russell and Dinesh Karthik helped KKR stage a fightback with an 81-run stand for the sixth wicket. While Russell slammed a cracking 54 off 22 balls, Karthik scored a quickfire 40 off 24 balls. After Russell’s departure, KKR looked all but out of the game before Cummins joined forces with Karthik and added 34 runs for the seventh wicket.

After the wicket-keeper’s departure, the Aussie pacer continued his sensational run and hammered an unbeaten 66 off 34 balls to keep KKR in the hunt till the end. He slammed 4 sixes in the 16th over from Sam Curran to take 30 runs from it and almost took the game away but CSK managed to hold their nerves in the end and bundled out KKR on
202 to win the game by 18 runs in the final over. Earlier, asked to bat first at the Wankhede, CSK openers Faf du Plessis and Ruturaj Gaikwad gave the team a brilliant start with half-centuries apiece. While Gaikwad found his mojo back with a 42-ball 64 laced with some classy strokes, Du Plessis hammered a stunning 95 off just 60 dazzled with six
fours and 4 sixes. The duo along with crucial contributions from Moeen Ali (25 off 12) and MS Dhoni (17 off 8) powered CSK to a matchwinning total of 220 runs in 20 overs.

SunRisers Hyderabad (SRH) bowlers put up an inspired performance to lead their team to a comprehensive nine-wicket win over Punjab Kings (PBKS) at the MA Chidambaram Stadium on Wednesday. Left-arm pacer Khaleel Ahmed (3/21 in four overs) and left-arm spinner Abhishek Sharma (2/24 in four overs) were the wreckers-inchief as SRH first bowled out PBKS for 120 and then chased the target with eight balls to spare. Jonny Bairstow made an unbeaten 63 off 56 deliveries to lead the SRH chase. Khaleel got the wickets of Mayank Agarwal, Shahrukh Khan and Fabian Allen while Sharma (2/24 in four overs) removed Moises Henriques and Deepak Hooda to leave the Punjab franchise reeling. PBKS lost their skipper KL Rahul early, the opener falling to his India teammate Bhuvneshwar Kumar. Chris Gayle and Mayank Agarwal tried to resurrect the innings but two successive wickets -- of Agarwal, who was caught
at mid-wicket, and Nicholas Pooran, who was run out -- set them back. Soon dangerman Gayle was out leg-before to Rashid Khan (1/17 in four overs) as PBKS were reduced to 47 for four in the ninth over. The hopes of a recovery rested on the shoulders of Deepak Hooda (13 off 11) and Moises Henriques (14 off 17) but both couldn’t build on the start and fell to the left-arm spin of Sharma with the Aussie getting out stumped. Shahrukh Khan (22 off 17) tried to take PBKS to a respectable total but he was caught at deep midwicket on the first ball of the penultimate over bowled by Khaleel. The target was a cakewalk as Bairstow and Warner (37 off 37 balls) added 73 for the first wicket in 10 overs. Warner’s dismissal brought in Kane Williamson (16 not out off 19 balls). B RIE F S C ORES : PBKS 120 in 19.4 overs (M Agarwal 22, S Khan 22, K Ahmed 3/21, A Sharma 2/24) lost to SRH 121/1 in 18.4 overs (J Bairstow 63 not out, D Warner 37) by 9 wickets.

Guatemala City, Apr 21 (Agencies): Indian recurve archers had a blazing start on their return to the World Cup after nearly two years as India qualified straight to quarter-finals in the men’s and women’s team event besides mixed section in the opening stage in Guatemala City. The women’s team topped the qualifications with Ankita Bhakat and Deepika Kumari’s super show. Atanu Das grabbed the second spot behind world No 1 Brady Elison to propel the men’s team to a third place finish while in mixed team Das and Kumari will be in action together for the first time after their marriage last year, Scroll.in reported. Das and Kumari, who
have won many international medals together in the past, will take on France in the mixed team quarterfinals, while the top-seed women’s team will face hosts Guatemala in the last-eight. The men’s team will take on the winners of Spain and Guatemala in their last eight clash. “Mixed team, you know, I like very much. If I get to play with Deepika then it’s awesome... We’d be the first couple to play in the Olympics. So it’s fun,” Das, who last won a mixed pair bronze with Kumari at the Asian Championships, told PTI. India were playing on the World Cup circuit for the first time after their appearance in the Stage 4 in Berlin in July 2019. The Asian Championship in
Deepika Kumari
Bangkok in November 2019 was their last international appearance, albeit under the aegis of World Archery after the national federation was suspended. “It’s been a while since we played any International tournaments because of Covid-19... So it’s a very good tournament, very good weather, and I
really enjoyed shooting,” said Das. The tournament serves as a preparation for the Tokyo Olympics in less than 100 days and the Indian men’s team, which has qualified, will look to make the most of it. The jet-lagged Indians showed little sign of rustiness as Kumari led with 339 points at the halfway
mark, four ahead of eventual topper Ana Vazquez and Bhakat. But the former world No 1 fell off the pace in the back end, having to rush her last arrows as she along with Bhakat slotted in second and third places with 673 and 671 points respectively. Reigning Under-18 world champion Komalika Bari took the 12th place with 659 points as the Indian women’s team comfortably grabbed the pole position, 14 points clear of Mexico to seal its last-eight place. India No 1 Das finished 14 points behind USA’s Elison who dominated the qualification round to finish with 694 points, his secondhighest ranking round score of his career.
Nadal survives Ivashka scare in Barcelona Open London, Apr 21 (Agencies): Spanish top seed Rafael Nadal survived a scare before fighting back to beat Belarusian qualifier Ilya Ivashka in the second round of the Barcelona Open. Nadal, who has not lost on clay to an opponent ranked outside the world’s top 100 since 2004, won 3-6 6-2 6-4 against 111th-ranked Ivashka. British number one Dan Evans was unable to continue his excellent form on clay, losing to France’s Corentin Moutet in a spiky second-round match. Evans, seeded 16th, lost 6-4
5-7 6-3. The pair shook hands at the net before another frank exchange of words, having disagreed earlier in this match and previously during a US Open encounter last year. Meanwhile, Italian ninth seed Fabio Fognini was defaulted from his second-round match for abusing a line judge. The 33-year-old, who has a history of on-court disciplinary problems, angrily smashed a racquet as he walked off, having seen Spanish opponent Bernabe Zapata Miralles progress at his expense.

Blues struggled in attack but Kai Havertz forced a good first half save from Robert Sanchez.
London, Apr 21 (AFP): Chelsea moved into the Premier League’s top four after a 0-0 draw against Brighton on Tuesday, but the result was completely overshadowed by the club’s role in derailing the controversial European Super League. Just before kick-off at Stamford Bridge, it was widely reported that Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich had decided to withdraw from the controversial
breakaway plan. While there was no official confirmation from the club, the Blues are understood to be preparing documents to formally quit the tournament. Manchester City became the first team to officially pull out, with Manchester United, Liverpool, Arsenal and Tottenham also confirming their exits. Barcelona, Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid, Juventus, AC Milan and Inter Milan
are the only remaining members of a Super League that crumbled before a match was ever played. Against that dramatic backdrop, Chelsea produced a flat performance, although the draw saw Thomas Tuchel’s side move into fourth place above West Ham on goal difference. Chelsea visit West Ham on Saturday in a crucial clash in the race to qualify for next season’s Champions League. Just
hours before kick-off, it seems Chelsea would not have to worry about qualifying for Europe thanks to their invitation to the closeddoor Super League. But after resounding condemnation from across the political and sporting spectrum, Chelsea are set to walk away. Abramovich and chairman Bruce Buck reportedly feared staying in the Super League would seriously damage Chelsea’s reputation, therefore undermining
their anti-Semitism campaigning and community work. While Stamford Bridge remained empty due to the coronavirus pandemic, around 1,000 fans had staged an angry protest before news of the Super League meltdown broke. The cheers when Chelsea’s imminent exit became public knowledge were as loud as any that greeted goals from the Blues when they fans were last allowed into the stadium.

fastest Indian to 5,000 T20 runs
New Delhi, Apr 21 (Agencies): Punjab Kings (PBKS) skipper KL Rahul broke Virat Kohli’s record to become the fastest Indian batsman to 5,000 T20 runs. Rahul took 143 innings to reach the milestone whereas Kohli took 167 innings, The Indian Express reported. Rahul needed just one run to reach the milestone before the match. The 29-year-old could manage only four runs from six deliveries before losing his wicket to Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) opening bowler Bhuvneshwar Kumar. Rahul has 2,808 IPL runs from 76 innings so far including two centuries and 23 half-centuries. The leading run-scorer of all-time in IPL is currently Kohli with 5,949 runs to his name from 187 innings. In the ongoing IPL season, Rahul has scored
K L Rahul
161 runs from four innings including two half-centuries. He scored a quickfire 91 in the first game against Rajasthan Royals (RR). However, PBKS have lost three out of their four
games in the season so far. “We knew what to expect here. Tried to get used to the conditions as quickly as we can. We were 10-15 short on this pitch. Bowlers tried very hard, but it’s very hard coming into these conditions and adapting quickly. Hindsight is a beautiful thing. We knew they were going to come hard. It’s tricky to have attacking fields. Was waiting for one of them to get out and then put pressure. Wanted to take the game as deep as possible. Unfor tunately, we couldn’t get wickets in the middle and that cost us. Every game is important for us and we’ve been in that position. It’s not a bad position to be in. Hopefully, learn from our mistakes and keep getting better,” Rahul said after the match.
