KSU, KMH flay firing incident

D I M A P U R , AU G 1 7 (NPN): Khiamniungan Students’ Union (KSU) and Khiamniungan Menyiu Hoikam (KMH) have strongly condemned the firing incident that occurred at International Trade centre (ITC) Dan, Pangsha under Noklak district on August 15, 2020. KSU through its media cell asserted that prior to the setting up of army camp at ITC Dan, no such incident had occurred. However, it said that the current location of army camp, which was close to public dwelling, was putting the lives of people at risk. It asserted that ITC Dan was established for socio-economic prosperity of the region and not battle ground to exchange bullets. KSU said that the incident where a student leader of Pangsha old village was shot dead during the conflict between the Naga nationalist and Assam rifles in early 1990s was still afresh in the minds of the villagers. As regards, KSU has appealed to the Indian Army to set up the camp outside the residential area for public (Cont’d on p-5) safety.

KUALA LUMPUR, AUG 17 (AGENCIES): A new strain of the novel coronavirus called ‘D614G’, deemed ten times more infectious, has been detected in Malaysia, said Director General of Health Noor Hisham Abdullah in a Facebook post, Bloomberg report stated. Abdullah said the neighborhood needed to be careful, after a D614G mutation of the novel coronavirus was discovered. “It’s is found to be 10 times easier to infect different people and easier to spread, if spread by ‘super spreader’ individuals,” Dr Noor Hisham said in a statement posted on his Facebook page on Sunday (Aug 16). The mutation was detected by the Malaysian Institute for Medical Research, because of culture and isolation tests on three instances from the nation’s Sivagangga audience and one case from the Ulu Tiram cluster. “So far, these two clusters have been found to be

he said. Dr. Noor added that the D614G mutation was detected by scientists in July, also is likely to induce current vaccine research to be faulty or ineffective towards this mutation. As per a Bloomberg report, the mutation has been spotted in three cases from a cluster that apparently

started when a restaurant owner and permanent resident returned to the country from India. The man had reportedly breached the mandatory 14-day home quarantine and since then sentenced to five months in prison and fined. The strain was also found in another cluster involving people returning from the Philippines. Dr Noor Hisham advised the public to continue to apply preventive measures and general health management by taking steps involving physical distancing, self-hygiene practices and wearing face masks. “People need to be wary and take greater precautions because this strain has now been found in Malaysia. The people’s cooperation is very needed so that we can together break the chain of infection from any mutation,” he further said. Malaysia reported 25 brand new COVID-19 cases on Sunday, nine of which were local broadcasts while 16 were imported.

Gowda expresses concern about Naga FB accused of bias towards BJP; India head alleges threat peace talks running into ‘rough weather’ BENGALURU, AUG 17 (PTI): Expressing concern over the Centre’s negotiations with NSCN (IM) to resolve the Naga problem running into ‘rough weather’, former Prime Minister H D Deve Gowda on Monday hoped distrust is put aside and a peace accord is reached at the earliest. “Newspaper reports indicate that the Union government’s negotiations with NSCN (IM) to resolve the Naga problem has run into rough weather. From recent statements made by those involved in the negotiations it is apparent that distrust has crept in,” the former Prime Minister and Rajya Sabha MP said in a statement. He said the ceasefire agreement in 1997, which followed his meeting as Prime Minister with Naga leaders Isak Chishi Swu

and Thuingaleng Muivah in Zurich, in February that year, was a result of constructive diplomacy. “We should ensure that the progress made in the last 23 years by successive governments is not forsaken now. There is the Constitution and also the 2015 framework agreement, which should help its move towards a solution,” Gowda added. The NSCN (IM) had attacked the Nagaland Governor and interlocutor

for Naga peace talks R N Ravi on Sunday, accusing him of converting a political issue into a law and order problem and adopting a ‘stratagem’ that resulted in the killing and arrest of its members. In a statement, the NSCN (IM), which has been engaged in peace negotiations with the Centre for the last 23 years, also alleged that Ravi was trying to divide the Naga people and ‘misled’ the central government and a parliamentary standing committee on the framework agreement signed on August 3, 2015. Stating that he sincerely hopes that distrust is put aside, talks continue, and a peace accord is reached at the earliest, Gowda said, ‘the people of the North East deserve to live in harmony and witness economic progress.

NEW DELHI, AUG 17 (AGENCIES): Public policy director of Facebook India, South and Central Asia, Ankhi Das, has filed a complaint with the Delhi Police against a number of people who allegedly issued “violent threats” to her online. Ankhi Das, the Facebook public policy director for India, in a written complaint to the Delhi Police, claimed that she has been receiving “violent threats against my life and body”. In her complaint, Das mentioned Facebook and Twitter accounts that had allegedly threatened her as a result of the WSJ article. The Facebook executive said that these threats came after a Wall Street Journal (WSJ) article on August 14 said that the platform had failed to take action against posts by BJP MLA Raja Singh, although the post fell under Facebook’s hate speech rules

D I M A P U R , AU G 1 7 (NPN): With relaxations on public movement and shops allowed to open from

10 a.m. till 5 p.m. from August 17 to August 31 after months of lockdown, Dimapur witnessed heavy rush Monday as thousands rushed to markets and hun-

dreds of vehicles clogging the main arterial roads. Shops will be open for five days (Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday) and remain closed on Wednesday and Sunday as per the decision of the Dimapur District Task Force (DTF) on COVID-19. Despite strict warning being issued by the authorities, in most cases, shoppers were not concerned about maintaining social distancing. Though the odd-even number order on vehicles allowed to ply was in place, there was huge surge in number of vehicles causing traffic snarls at some points during the day. Public transport resumed with auto-rickshaws plying on the road, albeit with a limited number of passengers. Deputy Commissioner (DC) Dimapur, Rajesh Soundararajan told Nagaland Post that Monday being first

day of total reopening after months of partial lockdown, it was not unexpected that the shopping places were crowded. Keeping in mind that everything could not be in lockdown and as people had to earn their livelihoods, the DC said that the DTF decided on a balanced and re-calibrated opening, even as some restrictions were still there. He said a committee had been formed to enforce all COVID-related precautionary measures. The DC however said New Market, Hazi Park and Hongkong Market areas remained closed as per the directives of the Home department. Further, he said DTF had received a proposal regarding phase-wise reopening of the shopping areas which has been forwarded to the Home department. (Cont’d on p-5)

and had been marked as dangerous. An August 14 article published in the WSJ claims that Das was opposed to applying Facebook’s hate speech rules to four individuals and groups with links to BJP. The article stated that despite being internally flagged for promoting violence, she was against applying the rules due to business imperatives. The report says that Ankhi Das opposed applying hate speech rules to the BJP’s T Raja Singh

CTAN objects to cancelling NSEE 2020 D I M A P U R , AU G 1 7 (NPN): Combined Technical Association of Nagaland (CTAN) has objected to the cancellation of Nagaland State Entrance Examination (NSEE) 2020 and demanded that the state government nullify the August 4, 2020 notification, which declared list of candidates provisionally selected by Common Selection Board for undergoing studies in various undergraduate courses in para medical, agri. & allied courses during the session 2020-21. The association CTAN through its media cell asserted that equal opportunity must be given to all applicants for open competition and not by some committee.

out of fear of ruining the company’s relationship with the ruling party. Raja Singh is the BJP’s lone MLA in Telangana assembly and is notorious for making communally provocative statements. WSJ quoting unnamed current and former company officials said Das, whose job also includes lobbying India’s government on Facebook’s behalf, told staff members that punishing violations by politicians from Modi’s party would damage the company’s business prospects in the country…” According to WSJ, Das’s team also took “no action” after BJP politicians posted content accusing Muslims of intentionally spreading the coronavirus, plotting against the nation and making a noise about “love jihad”. In addition to this, unnamed former employees quoted by WSJ claim that Das had also provided the BJP with “favourable treatment on election-

related issues”. “In April of last year, days before voting began in India’s general election, Facebook announced it had taken down inauthentic pages tied to Pakistan’s military and the Congress party. But it didn’t disclose it also removed pages with false news tied to BJP, because Ms. Das intervened,” the report said, quoting unnamed former Facebook employees. While BJP accused the social media giant of censoring nationalist voices, opposition Congress seized on WSJ report that alleged that Facebook’s content policies favour the ruling party. Meanwhile, the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Information Technology has stated that it will look into the WSJ report. “I will certainly look into the issue and the committee will seek the views of Facebook,” committee chairman Shashi Tharoor told The Indian Express.

D I M A P U R , AU G 1 7 (NPN): As COVID-19 positive cases continue to rise in Nagaland, the state Health & Family Welfare department, particularly health professionals have come under immense public scrutiny from various quarters. Talking to Nagaland Post, spokesperson of COVID-19 Hospital Dimapur, Dr. George Thirah while acknowledging the civil society organisations and public urged for their support, sought further cooperation in the fight against the virus. Lamenting that of late health professionals had been on the receiving end,

Dr. George appealed to the people to consider the plight of the health professionals and staff. Despite risking their lives and fighting the virus from the front, Dr. George regretted that doctors, nurses and medical staff have been widely criticised even for trivial slip-ups. Citing examples of “self less ser vice”, Dr. George said despite using “best” Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) and undergoing COVD-19 training, some doctors, nurses, peon, drivers and cook got infected while discharging their duty. He said some of them were still hospitalised while those who have recovered

have resumed their duty. “Health professionals and medical staff are working tirelessly to prevent the spread of the virus. We are risking ours and live of our family members in the service of our people. We appeal for cooperation, good wishes and prayers,” said Dr. George. Pointing out that the pandemic has crippled even the best medical institutions in the world, Dr. George said the state Health de-

partment along with the state government was doing its best to contain the pandemic. He said the department or the government alone cannot win the fight against the virus, for which public support and cooperation was important. “We do not know for how long this virus will be around, we can only fight it with the support and cooperation from all sections of the society,” he said.

3 Assam districts still floodhit; 11,900 people affected

Oppn Cong demands independent probe on mismanagement of MeECL

Guwahati, Aug 17 (PTI): Three districts of Assam - Dhemaji, Lakhimpur and Baksa are still inundated and 11,900 people are reeling under the impact of the flood on Monday, an official bulletin said here. Lakhimpur is the worst-hit with 9,500 people affected by the deluge, while the number of victims in Dhemaji and Baksa is 2,100 and 300 respectively, Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) said in the bulletin. The total number of people losing their lives in this year’s flood and landslide stands at 138 across the state. While 112 people died in flood-related incidents, 26 were killed in landslides. At present, 28 villages and 1,535 hectare of crop areas are under water in

the three flood-hit districts, ASDMA said. More than 11,800 people of 31 districts in those three districts were affected by the deluge on Sunday. ASDMA said that the authorities are running three relief camps and distribution centres in two districts, where 136 people are currently lodged. The Brahmaputra river is flowing above the danger level at Dhubri town, Nimatighat in Jorhat and Tezpur in Sonitpur districts, while its tributaries Dikhour, Dhansiri and Jia Bharali are flowing above the danger mark at various other places. Embankments were damaged in Nagaon district, while erosion was witnessed in Sonitpur district, ASDMA said.

Correspondent Shillong, Aug 17: The opposition Congress in Meghalaya on Monday demanded an independent inquiry into the alleged mismanagement of Meghalaya Energy Corporation Limited (MeECL) and also criticised the government on the proposed loan extended to the State-owned MeECL. “Only an independent inquiry would identify the shortcomings as well as people behind the lapses,” Congress spokesperson, Zenith M. Sangma said, while pointing out several issues of mismanagement within the power company. He said, chief minister Conrad Sangma and power minister James Sangma has assured in the Assembly

that a full time chairman would be appointed in the company, which has not been done till date. “A junior officer has been made CMD of MeECL. Earlier senior officers, not less rank of principal secretary or chief secretary, used to occupy the post of CMD,” said the senior Congress legislator. Criticising the MDA government for approving the Meghalaya Power Distribution Corporation Limited (MePDCL) proposal to avail an assistance restricted to Rs 1345.72 crore, Zenith said the MePDCL would be burdened with interest payment of 9.5 per cent “which is very high.” “The MePDCL will have to pay interest of more than 10 crore per month from the day it receives

the loan. Rather than taking loans for such a huge amount, the government should have tried to increase the efficiency of the MeECL and tried to make it sustainable,” Zenith said. Furthermore, the Congress legislator also pointed out on the failure of MeECL to fix some of the machineries at Umiam Hydro Electric Power which has been out of order for the past one year Due to mismanagement, these machineries have not been fixed and as a result, the State government is losing crores of rupees in revenue, he said. “The entire management is in a mess. The reason may be due to weakness in the leadership or in experience in the leadership in the MeECL,” added Zenith.

Manipur withdraws gallantry medal of Sub-Inspector Correspondent IMPHAL, Aug 17: Manipur government has withdrawn the Chief Minister's Gallantry Medal conferred on a police Sub-Inspector, suspended him, and ordered a high-level inquiry after his alleged arrest in a 2013 drug trafficking case was pointed out, officials said Monday. The sub-inspector (Bheishamayum Debson Singh) was among 11-member team of police commando who were arrested along the Imphal-Moreh national highway with Re-

spifed Tablets and pseudoephedrine tablets worth Rs. 3,64,02,000 in 2013. The state police department has also on Sunday constituted a committee headed by IGP (intelligence) K Radhashyam as chairman to enquire into the lapses with the proposal for award of the chief minister’s medal for gallantry. A police inspector, E Roshan Singh posted as reader to the SP Imphal East, who was said to have taken a main role in recommending the award for the sub-inspector, has also

been suspended from his service. The controversy in awarding the police officer involved in drug trafficking case came up amid the allegation of N Biren Singh involving in the protection of a drug kingpin who was caught red-handed with heroin powder worth Rs 27 crore and 28 kilograms of amphetamine tablets along with cash and arms in 2018. Meanwhile, opposition Congress in Manipur on Monday demanded resignation of chief minister N

Biren Singh who is also incharge of home department on moral ground. Awarding a police subinspector involved in drug trafficking case showed that the incumbent BJP-led coalition government lacked accountability and responsibility, the opposition Congress has alleged. Addressing an online press conference, senior Cong ress legislator W Meghachandra alleged the selection of a police personnel involved in the drug trafficking case has put a big question mark to the cred-

ibility of the government. He also said that taking action against low rank police officials due to lapses in the higher-ups show the lack of accountability on the part of government. “There is no meaning in taking action against low level officers like subinspector and inspectors. It will not be able to satisfy the people. This is nothing but fooling the people,” the Congress leader said while reacting to the follow up action of the state government after the award was conferred.

Education lockdown

n the nearly five months of national lockdown, beyond slowdown of the economy, job losses, the shutdown of all educational institutes due to the rapid spread of coronavirus in the country has impacted the entire education sector in India. India has been under lockdown since March 25,2020 with educational institutions remaining close. India’s education sector is facing unprecedented challenges and needs to adapt and find solutions to keep children motivated and in their route to learning. What this means is that, for millions of Indian students, the lockdown has brought all education to a complete halt. Since, access to midday meals is the primary reason so many Indian students attend school, if the lockdown continues for much longer, there is a chance that India’s dropout rate-which is already among the world’s highest-might increase further. On the other hand, a minority of students attending urban private schools are seeing their education continue through standard digital platforms. For pupils, the lockdown doesn’t just mean reduced cashflow or a professional setback; it represents an interruption to their learning journey. It is worse in the case of drop outs and proving to be the final straw for at-risk children who struggled to get an education at the best of times. The lockdown has aggravated deep-set class and social differences, especially between private and public school systems. The central government spends 4.6 percent of its GDP on education. This is lower than in sub-Saharan countries like Kenya, Togo, and Zimbabwe. With schools already online now, there is enough data to suggest online school can help children of all age groups but is not an alternative to the brick and motor schools. Teachers at the country’s premier private schools are tech-savvy. Most of them have access to the internet at home, as well as the other digital infrastructure required to craft and share course material. Unfortunately, it is not the case when it comes to the vast majority of teachers in the country. Nearly one in five primary school teaching positions is vacant today. Even in better times, many schools in rural India were run by just a single teacher. Smaller schools around the country might shut down permanently. School owners will be forced to downsize and renegotiate rentals since this looks like a washout year. Private schools are faced with drastically dwindling incomes and many teachers have been laid off are on the verge of being so. Sadly, not even the government or associated institutions like NCERT and SCERTs are talking about what they could do to ease the path back to school and address the trauma and fear among teachers and children. There is also very little thought on how rural schools are expected to cope with returning workers and their families. Nor is the government showing any concern about the physical, mental and emotional state of children who have undergone the trauma of recent reverse migration. While the government has done a commendable job enforcing the lockdown, worryingly little has been said to date about the government’s education sector strategy. So far, what has been heard from government official channels is a directive preventing schools from hiking fees during the lockdown. However, instead of putting more thought for this problem the government has thought of changing the nomenclature of HRD to Ministry of Education and bringing its New Education Policy.

DailyDevotion Are You Discouraged or Devoted? …Jesus…said to him, “You still lack one thing. Sell all that you have…and come, follow Me.” But when he heard this, he became very sorrowful, for he was very rich. —Luke 18:22-23 Have you ever heard the Master say something very difficult to you? If you haven’t, I question whether you have ever heard Him say anything at all. Jesus says a tremendous amount to us that we listen to, but do not actually hear. And once we do hear Him, His words are harsh and unyielding. Jesus did not show the least concern that this rich young ruler should do what He told him, nor did Jesus make any attempt to keep this man with Him. He simply said to him, “Sell all that you have…and come, follow Me.” Our Lord never pleaded with him; He never tried to lure him— He simply spoke the strictest words that human ears have ever heard, and then left him alone. Have I ever heard Jesus say something difficult and unyielding to me? Has He said something personally to me to which I have deliberately listened— not something I can explain for the sake of others, but something I have heard Him say directly to me? This man understood what Jesus said. He heard it clearly, realizing the full impact of its meaning, and it broke his heart. He did not go away as a defiant person, but as one who was sorrowful and discouraged. He had come to Jesus on fire with zeal and determination, but the words of Jesus simply froze him. Instead of producing enthusiastic devotion to Jesus, they produced heartbreaking discouragement. And Jesus did not go after him, but let him go. Our Lord knows perfectly well that once His word is truly heard, it will bear fruit sooner or later. What is so terrible is that some of us prevent His words from bearing fruit in our present life. I wonder what we will say when we finally make up our minds to be devoted to Him on that particular point? One thing is certain— He will never throw our past failures back in our faces.

elp!! I’m being cheated. The meat industry, the pesticide polluters, the hunters and the factories have combined to make so many wondrous creatures die out – even before I could feast my eyes on them. The Smooth Handfish has been declared extinct. It was an unusual fish with bulging eyes, a mohawk-like fin on its head and the ability to walk on the seafloor with its fins. Declared extinct by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), it was abundant just a few decades ago in the shallow waters of Tasmania. Now there is only one stuffed specimen left, caught in 1802. Its cousin also, the Red Handfish, lives on the seafloor and uses hand-like fins to “walk.” There are less than 100 individuals left. The culprits of this mass murder are the usual suspects : fishing, pollution and habitat destruction. In particular, a scallop fishery that operated in the region until 1967 which dredged the fishes’ habitat and kept throwing away millions of dead “bycatch” (unintentionally caught fish). This year the hauntingly beautiful, magical, white giraffes have gone extinct. Armed poachers killed the last two, a mother and son, in Kenya in 2020. In the next ten years all the giraffes will have gone. Since 1985 40% have been killed by hunters - roughly 86,000

giraffes in just East Africa alone. The reasons : civil unrest, poaching and killing by farmers who have made their homesteads on giraffe land. The farms along the river Tana, for instance, have blocked giraffe water points. They must walk through private farms to go to the river. Farmers use snares and pitfalls to kill them for daring to cross their land, and then cut off their tails and use them as drawing room trophies. There are just 16,000 left. My granddaughter is never going to see one. The last gigantic ponderous Pinta tortoise, Lonesome George, is also dead. He was big enough to carry me on his back. Now I will never see a tortoise of his size. The tortoises of the remote Pacific Galapagos islands were all this huge size. Then explorers and whalers arrived and ate them all. The utterly beautiful Formosan Clouded Leopard, who looked like a python on four legs, is also gone. Native to Taiwan, the cats were first cornered by having their forests cut down and then hunted to extinction for their pelts. The people who killed them then burnt all their glorious pelts for fear of repercussions from the government. So, you will not even be able to see the beauty that I am talking about except in a few photographs which show the clouds which seem

An almost barren planet to be drawn on their tawny skins. There were millions of passenger pigeons in America. They had pinkish body and blue-gray heads. A single white egg was laid in a flimsy nest of twigs; more than 100 nests might occupy a single tree They were all shot to death by little children in competitions to see who could shoot the most. People stood on their roofs and shot them idly as they passed by. Not to eat, not for any reason except the joy of killing. To Christopher Columbus goes the credit of wiping out the Caribbean monk seal. The explorer nicknamed these harmless creatures as sea wolves and proceeded to kill hundreds of them in 1494. The few he left behind were killed over the centuries for their meat or oil (to light candles) and by fishermen. They were declared extinct in June 2008. The Liverpool Pigeon with charming spotted green feathers was a close relative of the Dodo whom the sailors stopping at Mauri-

tius ate to extinction. This one lived in Tahiti and the locals hunted it for food. The westerners who settled there brought in pigs to eat and they destroyed the pigeon’s nests. It’s called the Liverpool pigeon because there is only one specimen in Liverpool zoo to show you that the earth once had this beautiful bird. Less than a hundred years ago, there were over a million black rhinoceroses roaming across the African continent. In 1960, China demanded their slaughter. They were butchered and their horns – made of normal matted hair- sold to the Chinese fake medicine trade. They do not exist anymore – and not a single human has benefitted from the so-called medicine made from their horns. Teeny weeny brown bats called Pipistrelles, their shrill cries going far and wide over the silent ocean at night, lived on a single Christmas Island on the Indian Ocean. They have been killed off by pesticide which was meant to kill the ants on the island. Why we

would want to kill anything at all is beyond my understanding. Madagascar had three kinds of hippopotamuses. The last of all three was killed in 2014. All of them were hunted to death, bringing the enchanted fairytale water treader, the river horse, to an end. The Yangtze River Dolphin was once worshipped as the river goddess. This dolphin, a common sight for one third of the Chinese population who live on the sides of this river, is now gone forever. Blind, they had a magical sonar system to catch their prey by echo location. Pollution, dams and hunting killed them. Japanese River Otters were once in the millions. Prized for their fur, they were hunted down viciously, hundreds being killed each day. They were done by 1980 and now poems are written about them. September 19th is celebrated as River Otter day. But I am sure that if they were to come alive, they would again be hunted for their furry skin. Each animal on this ignominious list of extinct species is a reminder of our failure as humans. A reminder of our viciousness and greed. Scientists have discovered up to 1.3 million species, but these are only 20% of the species there are on this planet. There are still millions of species waiting to be discovered, but we are killing them so fast that I will

never see or hear of them. 90% of all the species on the planet are now believed to be extinct. The Golden Toad, a small creature of sunblinding orange gold, was discovered in 1964 in Costa Rica and extinct by 1989. It only bred for one week in April. What an amazing enchanted planet this was. And it has taken us just 300 years to finish it off. All our children are taught about dinosaurs and they are taken to museums to see their bones. But we are not teaching them about the animals we kill off every year. They are inheriting an almost barren planet. In the past decade, 467 species have been declared extinct by IUCN. During my lifetime, the earth is going to lose these marvelous creatures: polar bears, the leatherback turtles, the tigers, the Asian elephant in India, the Javan rhino, the Sumatran orangutans, the Bluefin tuna, the mountain gorilla. And the bees. The bees will be the last animals to go before the human is extinct, because all our food depends on their survival. 70% of them are already extinct because of one set of pesticides – the neonicotinoids introduced in 2003. And used heavily in India. To join the animal welfare movement contact gandhim@nic.in, www. peopleforanimalsindia.org

Use CAMPA funds for afforestation: Javadekar

NEW DELHI, AUG 17 (PTI): With an aim to maximise the forest carbon stock by more tree plantation, Union Environment Minister Prakash Javadekar urged the forest ministers of the states on Monday to use the CAMPA funds exclusively for afforestation and not for payment of salaries. At a virtual meeting with the state forest ministers, Javadekar said 80 per cent of the Compensatory Afforestation Management and Planning Authority (CAMPA) funds will only be utilised for afforestation and plantation and the remaining for capacity building. “At the States Forest Minister’s meeting stressed again that states should use CAMPA funds exclusively for afforestation and plantation. Emphasized that CAMPA funds is not to be used for payment of salary, travelling allowances, medical expenses etc.,” he said in a tweet. “Eighty per cent of the CAMPA funds to be utilised only for afforestation, plantation. Rest 20 per cent will be for capacity building etc.,” Javadekar told the states. He said the govern-

Prakash Javadekar

ment is focussed on enhancing forest quality and increasing the tree cover for maximising the carbon stock, which requires several transformational changes in policies and programmes. Forest carbon stock is the amount of carbon that has been sequestered from the atmosphere and stored within the forest ecosystem, mainly within living biomass and soil and to a lesser extent, in dead wood and litter. Javadekar said his ministry has taken several initiatives, including massive tree plantation, promoting urban forestry through the Nagar Van scheme, landscapebased catchment treatment of 13 major rivers, a LiDAR technology-based survey of degraded forest areas for soil moisture conservation

projects and launching the National Transit Portal. “The ministry is also going to implement the School Nursery scheme shortly,” he said. Javadekar further said these efforts are critical to meet the goals set under the National Forest Policy, Nationally Determined Commitments and for the restoration of degraded forest land. The meeting was held to ensure the participation and coordination of all the states in taking forward various initiatives of the Union government to meet national and international goals. The states have shown enthusiasm and said they will cooperate with the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEF&CC) in

this endeavour, spokesperson of the ministry Gaurav Khare said. Several initiatives were discussed at the meeting, including the Centre’s Nagar Van scheme that aims at creating 200 Nagar Van on forest land in a collaborative approach, involving various agencies such as the forest and other departments, NGOs, corporate bodies, industries etc., for which the ministry will be giving grants for fencing and soil moisture works, he added. The School Nursery scheme aims at involving school students in nursery and plantation operations, the ministry said. “The objective is to inculcate the spirit of forest and environment in the minds of young students,” Khare said. He added that the study given to the Indian Council of Forestry Research and Education (ICFRE) for the rejuvenation of 13 major rivers will promote forestry along the rivers, increase the ground water recharge and reduce erosion. Similarly, the LiDAR technology, using airborne methods, will assist the

degraded land for the construction of soil measures, the ministry said. LiDAR, which stands for Light Detection and Ranging, is a remote sensing method that uses light in the form of a pulsed laser to measure ranges (variable distances) to Earth. A LiDAR instrument principally consists of laser, a scanner and a specialised GPS receiver. The environment ministry had, in August last year, released Rs 47,436 crore to 27 states for compensatory afforestation and other green activities, including prevention of forest fire, biodiversity management and soil conservation. Three states that got the maximum funds were Odisha (Rs 5,933.98 crore), Chhattisgarh (Rs 5,791.70 crore) and Madhya Pradesh (Rs 5,196.69 crore). In February, the ministry released the CAMPA funds for Jammu and Kashmir (Rs 408.3 crore), the Andaman and Nicobar Islands (Rs 16.4 crore) and Chandigarh (Rs 11.03 crore), taking the total amount of money released from the CAMPA funds to Rs 47,872 crore.

(From p-1) However, he said the response from the government was awaited. The DC mentioned that the order for sealing the inter-State border was also issued by the government. DC however asserted that there would be no compromise in precautionary measures vis-à-vis the pandemic. Meanwhile, Com-

missioner of Police (CP) Dimapur, Rothihu Tetseo told this reporter over telephone that since the town reopened after a long period , there was heavy rush of shoppers. On the violation of the odd-even traffic rule, Tetseo said challans were issued to the violators. Meanwhile, explaining the measures adopted to avoid overcrowding in

the markets, Dimapur Municipal Council (DMC) administrator, who also heads the sub-committee, Albert Ezung pointed out that vegetable vendors were allowed to sell vegetables only in the colonies/ villages but not in daily markets. He said vendors were also prohibited from selling vegetables along the Super Market footpaths.

KSU, KMH flay firing incident

(From p-1) KSU stated that it would be compelled to ask the public to vacate ITC Dan if such incidents occurred in the future. KSU said that creating unwanted situation in its land was a total contempt and disregard to the whole of community. “The beautiful land of Khiamniungan is a God gifted land,” KSU said, adding that there was no place for “vindictive minds” intending to cause bloodshed. The union also stated that creating such kind of incident during pandemic was strongly objectionable. “Instead of shelling mortars and bullets in our land; the Naga nationalist must extend helping hand to the needy,” it said. KSU said it had no authority to direct the Indian Army and Naga nationalist, but has appealed to all responsible to maintain peace and tranquillity in the region. Further, KSU affirmed to protect the peaceful existence of the general public and student community in particular at any cost.

KMH: Khiamniungan Menyiu Hoikam (KMH) condemned the firing incident that took place when the rest of the country was celebrating Independence Day. In a press release, KMH president Newkhai and general secretary Sichang said that such incident created fear psychosis and disturbed the peaceful environment in the newly upgraded district. KMG said that it would “never tolerate” such unwarranted and provoking action that disturbed the very peaceful existence and also threatened the security of the people. KMH has, therefore, appealed to all the “nation workers” and security forces to refrain from such “unlawful activities”, which led to law and order problem. It also called for honouring the sentiments of the people. Further, assuring to extend its cooperation and support towards those who advocate peace in society, KMH said that peace was prerequisite for all round development and progress.

Monsoon Parl Session expected in Sept 2nd week New Delhi, Aug 17 (IANS): With no written communication so far from the central government, officials of the two parliamentary secretariats are not yet sure of the date for the commencement of Parliament’s Monsoon Session, though they expect it to begin in the second week of September as it has to be held on or before September 22. The last Budget Session had ended on March 23, and hence the maximum six-month gap between two sessions, as per the mandate of the Constitution of India, ends on September 22. A senior officer posted in Parliament, requesting anonymity, told IANS that the Cabinet Committee on Parliamentary Affairs (CCPA) will meet this week to decide the date for the Monsoon Session.

“The topmost leadership of the BJP scripted each and every step of the Shaheen Bagh protest. They decided who will say what, who will attack whom and who is going to do the counter-attack. All these things were planned and well scripted,” Bharadwaj said. Hundreds of women from Shaheen Bagh and nearby localities had blocked the DelhiNoida link road between February 14 and March 24 as they protested against the proposed National Register of Citizens and the new citizenship law. The protests, which were joined by a large number of students, civil society activists, artistes, singers and actors, had drawn global attention. It

NEW DELHI, AUG 17 (PTI): Suspended Congress leader Sanjay Jha on Monday triggered a row by claiming that around 100 leaders had written to party president Sonia Gandhi seeking a change of political leadership, a claim the grand old party rushed to deny. Jha, who was first sacked as spokesperson and later suspended from the party, took to Twitter on Monday to claim that a hundred leaders had petitioned Sonia Gandhi over the state of affairs in the Congress. AICC chief spokesperson Randeep Surjewala, however, trashed Jha’s remarks saying it was a BJPmotivated move aimed at deflecting attention from the Facebook issue. The Congress is demanding a joint parliamentary committee probe against Facebook, accusing the social media platform of hate mongering and playing into the BJP’s hands. Jha earlier tweeted, It is estimated that around 100 Congress leaders (including MPs), distressed at

The same police do not allow protests by students, teachers, farmers. It did not prevent installation of tents. Over 1 lakh vehicles faced inconvenience daily… Shaheen Bagh pe logon ki duty lagti thi, people used to come and sit, maintaining a proper schedule. Every morning, some people used to come, only to go home in the afternoon, eat food, take rest and then again return in the evening,” Bharadwaj said. Among those who joined the BJP on Sunday was one Shahzad Ali, a member of the Rashtriya Ulama Council. The BJP has said Ali was a “Shaheen Bagh social activist” — a claim disputed by volunteers of the protest, which was withdrawn on March 24 after the imposition of the national Covid lockdown. The AAP, however, claimed that “key people behind the protest” joined the BJP.

Limbus and Rais. The recruitment of Nepali Gorkhas into the Indian Army stems from an arrangement agreed to in 1947 between India, the UK and Nepal, known as the Tripartite Agreement. But Nepal has now stated that this agreement is redundant. The assertion was made after Nepal Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli first raised the issue during his meeting with former UK Prime Minister Theresa May. In the meantime, sources also said that the Communist Party of Nepal-Biplab, a banned underground insurgent outfit, has launched an extensive people’s awareness programme to stop the youth of Nepal from joining the Gorkha regiments of Indian Army. Sources said the cultural wing of the CPN-Biplab is organising street plays, folk dances and other cultural events to spread anti-India campaigns. The ties between India and Nepal have come under strain after Indian Defence Minister Rajnath Singh inaugurated an 80 km long strategically crucial road connecting the Lipulekh pass with Dharchula in Uttarakhand on May 8.

NEW DELHI, AUG 17 (AGENCIES): The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) alleged on Monday that the anti-CAA protests at Shaheen Bagh were “scripted and strategised” by the BJP and that the over threemonth-long road blockade led by a large number of Muslim women was designed to benefit the BJP in the assembly polls held earlier this year. Addressing a news conference, AAP chief spokesperson Saurabh Bharadwaj said “pro-democracy” citizens must be feeling “cheated and manipulated” as the “BJP pulled the strings” of the protest that they had joined. On Monday, a group of Muslims had joined the BJP, which claimed “over 50 of them were from Shaheen Bagh“. While the AAP had resisted getting drawn into the Shaheen Bagh debate ahead of the Delhi assembly polls, barring Deputy CM Manish Sisodia’s remark that he “stands with the people of Shaheen Bagh”, its latest assertion marks a departure from its earlier position.

New Delhi, Aug 17 (IANS): China has given 12.7 lakh Nepalese rupees to a Kathmandu-based NGO to carry out a study on what motivates Gorkha community members to join the Indian Army. Sources said that in the first week of June, China’s Ambassador to Nepal, Hou Yanqi, funded a Nepalese NGO -- China Study Centre (CSC) -- to conduct a study on Nepalis being recruited in the Gorkha regiments of the Indian Army. “The CSC has been asked to conduct the study by addressing several points such as the reasons behind Nepalis joining the Indian Army, areas of Nepal from where such recruits are being made and their social-economic impact, their interest in joining the armed forces of foreign countries, among others,” a source said. A fund of 12.7 lakh Nepalese rupees has been allocated by the Chinese Embassy for this task, said the source. There are seven Gorkha regiments in the Indian Army comprising around 28,000 Nepali citizens. The regiments have a total 39 battalions. In total, there were 11 Gorkha Regiments, out of which four went to the British Army after Independence. India has the 1st, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 8th, 9th and 11th Gorkha regiments while the British Army has the 2nd, 6th, 7th and 10th regiments. China enhancing Pak firepower with armed drones

NEW DELHI, AUG 17 (IANS): Engaged with India at their border in eastern Ladakh, China is, at the same time, helping Pakistan to enhance its firepower by selling to it state-of-the-art defence items. Intelligence sources said Pakistan is procuring medium-altitude, long-endurance unmanned aerial vehicle ‘Cai Hong-4’ (CH-4) from China in bulk. Sources said that a 10member Pakistan Army team, led by Brigadier Mo-

hammad Zafar Iqbal, has visited China to review the procurement process. “The Pakistan Army team went to China for factory acceptance test for items procured from the Aerospace Long-March International Trade Company (ALIT), China. The team was led by Brigadier Mohammad Zafar Iqbal,” a source said. It was also found that Iqbal had also visited China in December 2019 for the factory acceptance test

The CH-4 has a takeoff mass between 1,2001,300 kg, depending on the variant, and can also carry a wide range of payloads. It is now in service with various military forces, including the Iraqi Army and the Royal Jordanian Air Force. Sources also stated that the ALIT has offered Pakistan command and control options for these UAVs,

including direct line-of-sight and satellite communications. Pakistan has planned to deploy these UAVs at Line of Control in Jammu and Kashmir to create further unrest. “China is helping Pakistan to do so,” said the source. India and China are locked in an over threemonth-long stand-off, hitherto unprecedented, at multiple points along the border.

The country has figured among the top three global importers of military hardware for the last eight years. On August 9, Defence Minister Singh said the ministry was now ready for a “big push” to indigenous defence manufacturing in tune with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s call for an “Atmanirbhar Bharat” (Self-Reliant India). The negative list of 101 items includes towed artillery guns, short range surface to air missiles, cruise missiles, offshore patrol vessels, electronic warfare systems, next generation missile vessels, floating dock, anti-submarine rocket launchers and short range maritime reconnaissance aircraft. The list also includes basic trainer aircraft, lightweight rocket launchers, multi-barrel rocket launchers, missile destroyers, sonar systems for ships, rockets, ASTRA-MK I beyond visual range air-to-air missiles, light machine guns and artillery ammunition (155 mm) and ship-borne medium range guns.

NEW DELHI, AUG 17 (PTI): The government has prepared a roadmap to promote the indigenously developed military platforms and weapons to boost their exports and will use diplomatic channels to promote them in overseas markets, a senior Defence Ministry official said on Monday. Raj Kumar, secretary, Department of Defence Production, said at a webinar that the domestic defence industry will hold web interactions with the representatives of friendly countries to figure out what kind of products and platforms they require. “We are preparing country-wise profiles of products, weapons and platforms which are probably needed by our friendly countries. So we are now planning to start web interaction led by the industry,” Kumar said. “That country’s defence attache, our DPSUs (defence public sector undertakings), industry, will then figure out what is in the store for us to promote there for exports,” he said. release issued by the Indian Embassy here. The two sides noted “the progress made in the development projects in the last one year, including reconstruction of 46,301 earthquake damaged houses in Gorkha and Nuwakot districts the operationalization of Motihari-Amlekhgunj, cross border petroleum products pipeline, the Integrated Check Post at Biratnagar and the High Impact Community Development Projects.” Nepal also noted with appreciation COVID–19 related assistance, including the supply of medical equipment by India, the release said. The meeting

mainly discussed the status of implementation of the on-going projects under Nepal-India bilateral cooperation covering Terai roads, cross-border railways, Arun-III hydropower project and petroleum products pipelines, according to the Nepalese Foreign Ministry. “The meeting also discussed issues related with Pancheshwar multipurpose project, post-earthquake reconstruction, irrigation, power and transmission lines, construction of Nepal Police Academy, integrated check posts, Ramayana circuit, HICDPs, motorable bridges over Mahakali River, agriculture and cultural heritage, among others,” it said.

“Both sides underlined the need for expediting implementation of the bilateral projects. In that connection, they agreed to undertake necessary measures to timely address problems and obstacles in the course of implementation,” it said. The Nepal-India Oversight Mechanism was set up after Prime Minister Modi’s visit to Nepal in September 2016 to oversee the implementation of bilateral projects and take necessary steps for their completion in time. “India and Nepal have agreed to hold the next meeting of the mechanism on a mutually convenient date to review the progress made in

the implementation of the India assisted economic and development cooperation projects,” it added. The ties between India and Nepal came under strain after Defence Minister Rajnath Singh inaugurated an 80-km-long strategically crucial road connecting the Lipulekh pass with Dharchula in Uttarakhand on May 8. Nepal protested the inauguration of the road claiming that it passed through its territory. Days later, Nepal came out with the new map showing Lipulekh, Kalapani and Limpiyadhura as its territories. In June, Nepal’s Parliament approved the new political map of the country featuring areas which India maintains belong to it. In its reaction, after Nepal’s lower house of parliament approved the bill, India termed as untenable the “artificial enlargement” of territorial claims by the neighbouring country. India said Nepal’s action violates an understanding reached between the two countries to resolve the boundary issues through talks. Prime Minister Oli has been asserting that Lipulekh, Kalapani and Limpiyadhura belong to Nepal and vowed to “reclaim” them from India.

China says ready to properly address differences with India BEIJING, AUG 17 (PTI): China on Monday said it is ready to work with India to enhance political mutual trust, properly manage their differences and safeguard the long-term development of bilateral ties. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian said this at a regular briefing when a Western media journalist sought China’s reaction to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s remarks that the Indian armed forces have given a befitting reply to those challenging the country’s sovereignty. Modi, in his 74th Independence Day address to the nation from the ramparts of Red Fort, said the armed forces have given a befitting reply to those challenging the country’s sovereignty “from LoC to LAC”, in a veiled reference to Pakistan and China. “From LoC (Line of Control) to LAC (Line of Actual Control), anyone who casts an eye on the sovereignty of the country, the armed forces have responded in the language they understand,” Modi said. Modi’s comments came amid India’s bitter border row with China along the LAC in eastern Ladakh and rise in incidents of ceasefire

No country has right to speak on behalf of Palestinians: Mahmoud Abbas Abbas stressed his refusal to “use the Palestinian issue as an excuse for normalization with Israel”, noting that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu “explicitly confirmed the annexation plan is still on the table”. The Palestinian President also reaffirmed rejection of the US Middle East peace deal. For his part, Macron expressed his deep understanding of the position of Palestinians. However, Macron said that his country welcomed

the August 13 tripartite agreement between the UAE, Israel and the US because it would push the

peace process forward in the region, stressing the need to reach a political solution under the two-state solution and international law. He also invited Abbas to visit Paris to complete consultations on the overall situation related to the Palestinian issue.Abbas accepted the invitation. Also on Sunday, Nabil Abu Rudeineh, presidential spokesman, told reporters that the Palestinian leadership will adopt a robust foreign policy against the accord.

“In the upcoming days, the Palestinian leadership will adopt an important foreign political movement to confront any step arising from the UAE-Israeli normalization agreement. “The normalization between the two sides is a violation against the Palestinians’ rights as well as Jerusalem. It breaks the Arab Peace Initiative,” he said. On August 13, Israel and the UAE reached the historic agreement to work towards a “full normalization of relations.”

Kamala Harris appoints Indian- Lebanese customs chief American as her press secretary arrested over Beirut blast WASHINGTON, AUG 17 (PTI): Senator Kamala Harris has roped in IndianAmerican Sabrina Singh, who previously was the spokeswoman of two Democratic presidential candidates, as press secretary for her Democratic vice presidential campaign. Singh, 32, previously headed the press shop of two Democratic presidential candidates -- New Jersey Senator Cory Booker and former New York mayor Mike Bloomberg. Last week, Democratic presumptive presidential nominee Joe Biden, 77, picked 55-year-old Indianorigin Harris as his running mate. “I’m so excited to join the #BidenHarris ticket as Press Secretary for @ KamalaHarris! Can’t wait to get to work and win in

Kamala Harris

November!,” said Singh, the first-ever Indian-American press secretary to a vice presidential nominee of a major political party. A resident of Los Angeles, Singh was earlier spokesperson of the Democratic National Committee. She is the granddaughter of Sardar J J Singh of the India League of America, a non-profit organisation which champions the in-

terests of Indian-American community in the US. In the 1940s, J J Singh along with a small group of fellow Indians mounted a nationwide campaign against racial discriminatory policies of the US. This culminated in the then president Harry Truman signing the Luce-Celler Act on July 2, 1946. The signing of the Act allowed a quota of 100 Indians to immigrate to the United States per annum. Meanwhile, Sri Lankan-American Rohini Kosoglu has been appointed in a senior role to advise Harris. She has earlier served as a senior advisor to Harris in her Senate office and presidential campaign. Harris was a presidential aspirant until last year before she dropped out of the race because of lack of popular support.

Beirut, Aug 17 (AP): The head of Lebanon’s customs authority was formally arrested on Monday after being questioned over the massive explosion in Beirut earlier this month, the state-run National News Agency reported. The investigation is focused on why nearly 3,000 tonnes of explosive ammonium nitrate was being stored at the city’s port. The ignition of the stockpile caused an explosion that tore through the capital, killing at least 180 people and wounding 6,000. Thirty people are still missing after the August 4 blast, which caused an estimated USD 10 billion to USD 15 billion in damage. Documents that surfaced after the blast, the single most destructive in Lebanon’s history, showed that officials have known

for years that 2,750 tonness of ammonium nitrate were stored in a warehouse at the port and knew about the dangers. Judge Fadi Sawwan questioned customs chief Badri Daher, who was detained days after the blast, for 4 1/2 hours in the presence of his two lawyers before issuing the arrest warrant, the agency said. Daher will remain in custody as the investigation continues. NNA said that after questioning Daher, Sawwan headed to the scene of the blast to survey the damage and will later return to question Hassan Koraytem, who was the top port official until the day of the blast. Lebanese President Michel Aoun said the probe into the devastating blast is “very complex” and would not be finished quickly.

16 people killed in Somalia hotel attack MOGADISHU, AUG 17 (IANS): At least 16 people, including a police officer, were killed and dozens others injured after the Somalian security forces ended a five-hour siege by the al-Shabab terror group at a beachside hotel in the capital city of Mogadishu, a government official said on Monday. Government spokesman Ismael Mukhtar Omar said five al-Shabab fighters were also killed by security forces after the attackers stormed the Elite Hotel in Lido Beach, reports Xinhua news agency. “The total number of casualties at the Elite Hotel attack is 16. tackers, while one police officer was killed in the rescue operation,” Omar said in a statement. The attack also killed two senior officials from the Information and Defence

Ministries. Omar said 18 people had been injured, dismissing a report by medical charity, Aamin Ambulance which earlier said that 28 were hurt.

The government official said the Somali special forces had rescued 205 people inside the hotel including the owner, who is a lawmaker. He said an investigation has been launched to establish how al-Shabab fighters managed to enter the fortified Elite Hotel, a recently launched upscale facility frequented by senior government officials. The attack started on Sunday afternoon after the militants detonated a car bomb that ripped off the hotel’s gates before storming inside the facility. The Special Forces immediately arrived at the scene and undertook rescue operations.

As part of the agreement, Israel will suspend the annexation of Palestinian lands in the occupied West Bank, while it focuses on expanding ties with other Arab countries with other nations in the Muslim world. The UAE and Israel will also immediately expand and accelerate cooperation regarding the treatment of and the development of a vaccine for coronavirus. The Israel-UAE deal marks the first diplomatic ties between Israel and a Gulf country in 25 years.

age our differences, step-up practical cooperation and safeguard the long-term development of bilateral ties,” the spokesman added. In his speech, Prime Minister Modi also said that “whether it is terrorism or expansionism, India is fighting both with determination.” Referring to the Galwan Valley clashes in eastern Ladakh in June, the prime minister said respect for India’s sovereignty is supreme and the world has seen in Ladakh what its brave jawans can do to maintain this resolve. “I salute all those brave soldiers from the Red Fort,” Modi said, adding the whole country is united in protecting the sovereignty of the country.

Sevilla beat Man Utd to reach Europa final Brady clinches 1st WTA title

Players of Sevilla and Manchester United in action during their Europa League semi-final match.

Lo n d o n, Au g 1 7 (Agencies): Europa League thoroughbreds Sevilla reached yet another final as substitute Luuk de Jong struck in the 78th minute to earn them a gritty 2-1 victory over Manchester United on Sunday. United, already beaten in two domestic semi-finals this season, looked on course to make it third time lucky when Bruno Fernandes scored from the penalty spot in the ninth minute. But former Liverpool

player Suso levelled in the 26th minute, and the Spaniards showed all their European know-how to weather a United storm on a humid night in Cologne. Inspired goalkeeper Yassine Bono came to Sevilla’s rescue on several occasions, and when United’s energy levels dipped, De Jong stole in to snatch victory. Sevilla will meet either Inter Milan or Shakhtar Donetsk in the final in Cologne on Friday, when they will be going for their sixth title in

the competition since 2006. While Sevilla have a chance to restore Spanish pride after Barcelona’s horror show in the Champions League quarter-finals on Friday, United’s defeat underlined a poor European season for English clubs, who provided all four finalists in last season’s Europa and Champions League competitions. United were the only English club to reach a continental semi-final this season after Manchester City

Dhoni one of the best leaders: Kirsten New Delhi, Aug 17 (IANS): Gary Kirsten, who was the coach of the 2011 World Cup-winning Indian team, has hailed MS Dhoni, saying it was a privilege for him to work with one of the best leaders that he came across. Dhoni retired from international cricket last Saturday, thus bringing an end to an illustrious career spanning more than 16 years. Kirsten on Monday expressed gratitude to Dhoni for all the good memories that he made during his tenure with the Indian team. “A privilege to work with one of the best leaders I have come across. Thanks MS for many fond memories with the Indian cricket team,” said the 52-year-old in a tweet. Kirsten was handed an initial two-year deal from March 1, 2008. He was then handed over a one-year contract exten-

sion that saw him lead India to their second World Cup title. Under his stewardship, India also took over the numero uno spot in Tests in 2009. The former South Africa opener also revisited a past statement, which described their bond. “I would go to war with Dhoni by my side.” Dhoni, who made his ODI debut in 2004, played a whopping number of

350 ODIs, 90 Tests and 98 T20I matches for India. He was the first and is still the only captain till date to have won all three ICC Trophies. The 39-year-old from Ranchi holds the record for most inter national matches as captain (332). Unarguably the quickest man behind the wicket, Dhoni affected a staggering 829 dismissals behind the stumps.

were dumped out of the Champions League by Lyon on Saturday. United made a dream start when Diego Carlos brought down Marcus Rashford in the area just after the striker fired across goal. The referee belatedly pointed to the spot, handing United their 22nd penalty of the season in all competitions, and Bruno Fernandes, who almost turned in Rashford’s shot, smashed his spot kick past Bono. Fred had a chance to

Sarita Devi tests positive for COVID-19 New Delhi, Aug 17 (PTI): Former world champion boxer L Sarita Devi on Monday tested positive for COVID-19 along with her husband Thoiba Singh but both of them are asymptomatic. The couple is based in Imphal and have a son, Tomthin, who has tested negative. "Me and Sarita have tested positive. We are right now moving to a COVID-19 care facility. Both of us have no symptoms at all," Thoiba told PTI over phone. "I have no idea how this infection caught us. I think we were taking all precautions. But hopefully, it is going to be all right. We will recover soon. I am just relieved that Tomthin has tested negative," he added. Sarita is an Asian Games bronze-winner, besides being a five-time Asian Championships goldmedallist.

No exit talks between Barca and Messi

Barcelona, Aug 17 (Agencies): Barcelona insisted they had not heard from Lionel Messi that he wants to leave the club, as an emergency board meeting was being held at Camp Nou on Monday. Barca officials, including under-fire president Josep Maria Bartomeu, were due to discuss wholesale changes following the team’s humiliating 8-2 Champions League quarter-final defeat by Bayern Munich on Friday. A report from Esporte Interativo on Sunday even claimed Messi has made up his mind to leave this summer, although a Barcelona source told AFP shortly before the board meeting was due to start that there had still been no communication with the club to that effect. Messi’s frustration will be among the issues to be discussed along with the future of coach Quique Setien, who is expected to be sacked. Ronald Koeman had emerged as the favourite on Monday to replace Setien given concerns around the suitability of Mauricio Pochettino, who has previously said he would never coach Barcelona due to his

Lionel Messi

links to rivals Espanyol. Another option is Barca B coach Garcia Pimienta, who could oversee a greater emphasis on

youth before a longer-term appointment is made after the presidential elections next year. Former Barca mid-

fielder Xavi Hernandez would be the preferred option of Messi and other senior players but Xavi has recently signed a new deal with Qatari club Al-Sadd and is against working under the current board. Another possible outcome of Monday’s meeting is that the club’s presidential elections, due in June 2021, are brought forward, although it is more likely they would be advanced to earlier next year than the next few months. Sporting director Eric Abidal will also have his future discussed and could be moved on. Defender Gerard Pique called for sweeping changes after describing the heavy loss to Bayern, Barca’s worst ever in Europe, as their “rock bottom”. But Bartomeu asked for patience. “We are hurting, but once we get to next week we will start making decisions,” he told television channel Movistar. “The credibility of a coach is diminished when this happens, clearly. That is obvious, but that does not bother me right now. I think what happens today needs to be analysed with a bit more perspective,” he added.

make it 2-0 for United on the counter-attack but in a wildly open first half, Sevilla levelled when Suso swept in Sergio Reguilon’s low cross. United should have led by halftime with Anthony Martial side-footing a great chance over the bar, Rashford stinging the palms of Bono, and Fernandes’s improvised volley forcing another fine save from the Moroccan. Bono made another instinctive stop from Mason Greenwood just after halftime as United laid siege to the Sevilla goal. Martial was also denied by Bono as Sevilla’s goal led a charmed life, but they battened down the hatches and regained a foothold as United’s intensity inevitably waned. United had 20 attempts at goal compared with Sevilla’s nine, but all the spurned gilt-edged chances came back to bite them as their hopes of a first trophy since winning the Europa League under Jose Mourinho three years ago evaporated. To make matters worse it was former Manchester City player Jesus Navas’s cross from the right that caught Victor Lindelof and Aaron Wan-Bissaka sleeping and De Jong drifted in behind the pair of them to slot home.

Lexington, Aug 17 (Agencies): American Jennifer Brady clinched her first career WTA title on Sunday, defeating Switzerland’s Jil Teichmann 6-3, 6-4 in the Top Seed Open final. The hard court, outdoor competition in Lexington, Kentucky, marked the WTA’s first tournament in the United States since the coronavirus outbreak forced almost all sport into a long break earlier this year. In the first set, a defensive effort saw Brady save all four break points faced before going on the attack in the second set, winning more than 80% of her first serve points in front of the empty stands. “Before I walked onto the court I was like, ‘Okay, I have to believe in myself that I can win this,’ otherwise it doesn’t really make sense for me to walk out there,” said Brady, who did not drop a set the entire tournament. Brady, who defeated Coco Gauff in straight sets in the semifinal, thrust her hands into the sky after firing off a forehand winner to clinch the match and walked to the net to tap her opponent’s racket in a socially distanced gesture of sportsmanship.

Jennifer Brady with the trophy after defeating Jil Teichmann in the Top Seed Open final.

“Everything I’ve imagined, it’s definitely reality,” said Brady, who Facetimed her parents after the win. With limited options to celebrate under health and safety protocols, Brady said she would celebrate the win by ordering in “something delicious” to eat. “And I’m buying for

anybody else who’s here,” she added. The Cincinnati Masters is scheduled to be played at Flushing Meadows, New York from later this week, followed by the U.S. Open, also at its usual Flushing Meadows home, from August 31 to September 13.

Man City will come back stronger next season: Pep Manchester, Aug 17 (Agencies): Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has said that the side will look to better their performance in the Champions League next season. His remark came as City got knocked out from the Champions League after losing 1-3 against Lyon in the quarter-finals. “Now yes they are disappointed, but after the break when we start again, we will recover. We will restart again and try to do it again. Of course, I am not able with these guys to break the quarter-finals. Three years in a row we are out. Life is how you stand up again and next season we will try again,” the official website of City quoted Guardiola as saying. The new Premier League season will start from September 12, giving the City squad just four weeks to rest and prepare. City played 14 match-

PSG’s Navas out of CL semi-final Paris, Aug 17 (Agencies): Paris Saint-Germain goalkeeper Keylor Navas has been ruled out their Champions League semi-final with Leipzig, the French side said on Sunday. Costa Rica’s Navas left the field in the dramatic last-eight win over Atalanta with a muscular issue and will miss Tuesday’s meeting against the German outfit. Spain’s Sergio Rico, who has played just nine games this season, is set to start in Lisbon after having replaced three-time Champions League winner Keylor Navas against the Italians. Midfielder Idrissa Gueye is a doubt for the club’s first top-tier semifinal since 1995 but Marco Veratti, Thiago Silva and Layvin Kurzawa took part in training despite suffering various problems. Ander Herrera, Leandro Paredes and Marquinhos are coach Thomas Tuchel’s options to take the Senegal international’s place.

Pep Guardiola

es in eight weeks since the resumption of football this season, so there are some players who are bound to be a bit under the weather. “Yeah, but it is what it is. We knew it. The show must go on. Now it’s time

for the players to take a break. We will give them as many days as possible,” Guardiola said. “Next season we will be strong and demanding. We will now try to sleep, pass 48 hours and then think about next season,”

he added. Manchester City had finished at the second position in the 2019-20 Premier League standings. The side also came up short in the semi-finals of the FA Cup against Arsenal.

Joe Hart set to join Tottenham

Joe Hart

Lodon, Aug 17 (Agencies): Joe Hart is undergoing a medical at Tottenham ahead of a move to the club on a free transfer. Hart will compete with Paulo Gazzaniga for Hugo Lloris’ No 1 spot as goalkeeper in Jose Mourinho’s squad. The 33-year-old became a free agent after his contract came to an end at Burnley at the end of last season, in a campaign where he made just three appearances in all competitions for the Clarets in 2019/20. He started one match in the EFL Cup and two in the FA Cup, spending the

season as the second choice goalkeeper at Turf Moor behind Nick Pope. Hart would become Tottenham’s second signing of the summer transfer window, with Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg having arrived from Southampton for an undisclosed fee. Har t won the Premier League title twice, the League Cup twice and one FA Cup during his time at Manchester City, but has struggled for form and regular first-team action in recent campaigns. The former England No 1, who holds 75 caps, was considering

a move abroad earlier this summer in search of more game-time. Earlier, Hart said, “I’m totally open. I just want to play at the highest level I can. In England, I don’t feel I am going to be able to do that. Maybe if I hadn’t achieved what I’ve done in this league I might not be so ready to step away.” “Don’t get me wrong. I’d love to have another big chance in England, but it could be difficult.” Hart went on loan to Serie A side Torino from Man City during the 2016/17 campaign.
