D i m a p u r , Au g 1 9 (NPN): Dimapur’s landmark railway overbridge near Hotel Sente appears to be showing signs of gradual deterioration due to lack of maintenance and if the neglect continued, it could even lead to a major catastrophe. Authorities such as state PWD, CPWD or central agencies washed their hands off on any responsibility for maintenance of the overbridge. According to some reports, the construction of the overbridge was com-
NTC shocked at Technical Edn dept non-action D IMAPUR , AUG 1 9 (NPN): Nagaland Tribes Council (NTC) has expressed shock at having learnt from ANCSU and parents of expectant candidates that, despite chief secretary’s clear instruction and its objection, the Technical Education department had not rectified its notification (No.DTE/ CSAB-NEUT/1/2018-19) with inconsistent rules and guidelines, which allegedly enabled many candidates with doubtful credentials to appear the JEE, 2018 and many of whom were now in the merit list as well. NTC in a statement issued on Sunday urged the department to keep the cases of doubtful candidates in abeyance till the local administration rectified the indigenous certificates issued earlier through standard procedures to establish the antecedents. It also cautioned the administration concerned not to play with the rights of indigenous citizens of Nagaland. According to NTC, the irregularities detected by the parents were of a serious nature with far-reaching consequences, if precedence was set and the department proceeded with counseling and nominating doubtful candidates.

pleted in the early 70s and officially inaugurated in 1973 thereby at least making as old as 45 years. During all these years, the overbridge has been bearing the load of thousands of vehicles each day including huge trucks hauling tons of cargo as it remains the only link for the NH 29 between Numaligarh- Dimapur-Kohima-Imphal. Nagaland Post had carried a special report in 2012 showing how several cracks had appeared in a portion of one of the beams. The columns are still in good shape. Although the bridge’s columns look stable enough,
a fire that broke out in a colony a few months back near the bridge has destabilised the bridge slabs as several cracks have appeared over the area burnt area. Iron rods supporting the main beams of the bridge slabs have been exposed after the fire burned off parts cement plasters on the beams. The 45-year-old bridge serves as a flyover for the railway track and regarded as one of the oldest overbridges in Northeast India. The sidewalks along the bridge on both the sides have all caved in due to weight of two wheelers
which have turned it into a thoroughfare. Potholes on the bridge are also taking their toll as they cause sudden vibrations by bumps from vehicle tyres. Most of the side railings along the bridge on both the ends have been decimated and heavy cables on the sides were also left dangling. So long as the overbridge remains as the only link for normal traffic between East and West Dimapur and also the vital link for the NH 29, the present condition of the bridge is a cause for serious concern. Assam truckers to stop plying to Wokha district from today GOLAGHAT, AUG 19 (AGENCIES): Truck owners of Merapani in Assam’s Golaghat district have decided to stop plying to Wokha district from Monday after drivers claimed that they were allegedly harassed by police and activists during checking of documents like Inner Line Permit (ILP). According to The Telegraph report, the decision was taken during a public meeting on Thursday, which was attended by members of All Assam Students Union (AASU), Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuba Chatra Parishad (AJYCP), All Assam Scheduled Caste Students Union and Merapani Market Committee, among others. “For the past couple of days, drivers and handymen of taxis and goods vehicles are being harassed... on the pretext of checking ILP or National Register of Citizens (NRC) document,” said Mofizul Hussain, president of Truck Owners’ Association of Merapani. “The student organisations even handed over
two drivers, Faridul Ali and Raju Sonowal, to the police and they were sent to Wokha jail. Though they were released on Thursday, it has created panic among drivers and handymen from Assam who live in Wokha. Most of them have already returned,” he said. “We are aware that one needs an ILP to travel into Nagaland but there are no facilitation counters at the inter-state border check-post to avail of the permit. Earlier, there was no such checking or restriction. Our drivers only needed to show the licence issued by the Nagaland government to enter,” said Hussain. He said the boycott would continue until the ILP requirement is withdrawn. The association also urged the Golaghat administration to properly check documents of taxi drivers who ply from Wokha to other parts of Nagaland through Assam. More than 150 commercial vehicles, including trucks and Tata Sumos, usually ply from Merapani to Wokha.

Kerala toll 370, over 7 lakh in camps T H IRU V A N A N THAPURAM, AUG 19 (IANS): As the rain fury finally abated on Sunday, 724,649 people remained in 5,645 camps in Kerala following “one of the worst ever floods” that has left about 370 dead and caused unprecedented destruction. “Our prime concern was to save lives. It appears it has been met,” chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan told the media. But even as Vijayan maintained that the last stage of rescue act was going on, various WhatsApp groups continued to be flooded with requests for help, especially from Alappuzha. On Sunday morning, the authorities withdrew the red alert issued in the last of the three districts: Idukki, Ernakulam and Pathanamthitta. Naturally, with fishermen, NCC, Navy and Air Force continuing to rescue the marooned, Sunday saw the maximum evacuation of people from Chengannur, Pandalam, Thiruvalla, several areas in Pathanamthitta district and in Aluva, Angamaly and Paravur in Ernakulam. The chief minister said 22,034 people had been rescued from flooded homes and buildings. The death toll began on May 29

when Kerala got the first of the monsoon rains. Every fisherman who took part in the rescue act would be given Rs 3,000 each, he said. Students who lost their educational materials and uniforms would get new replacements. Health Minister K.K. Shailaja admitted that although the water level had fallen in many areas, medical facilities might not have reached certain regions due to the magnitude of the crisis. Congress president, Rahul Gandhi and CPI (M) general secretary Sitaram Yechury said the central assistance of Rs 500 crore was too little. Kerala government has estimated the loss at Rs 19,500 crore. Disease outbreaks feared as thousands trapped
by Kerala flood: Aid workers have said they fear outbreaks of disease as thousands of people remain stranded. An estimated 800,000 people have been relocated to 4,000 relief camps as waters continue to surge in Kerala. “The scale of the calamity here is indeed very, very frightening,” Devendra Singh-Tak, a spokesperson for Save the Children, told Sky News. As the severity of the rainfall begins to decline, aid workers fear that stagnant water could prove a breeding ground for diseases like cholera and malaria, and have warned of a chicken pox outbreak. They say some 10,000 people in remote villages could be cut off from medicine, food and water.

toric Framework Agreement between NSCN (I-M) and the Centre on August 3, 2015 and a preamble for political dialogue by WC, NNPGs with GoI on November 17, 2017 and their diligent work in bringing about a permanent peace in Nagaland. ed that during the proposed special session of the Assembly, each legislator must declare their firm stand against the Centre’s move to distort the territorial integrity of the state. They insisted that legislators must also leave behind their political affiliation and take a firm stand to press the Union
Home minister on the latest development of the Framework Agreement between the Centre and the NSCN (I-M) and the stand of the Centre. They said the house must also take a concrete decision against any kind of settlement of the Naga peace talks that would lead to division among the dif-

D IMAPUR , AUG 1 9 (NPN): Chakhroma Students’ Union (CSU), New Chümoukedima Youth Organization (NCYO) and New Chümoukedima Village Students’ Union (NCVSU) in separate statements condemned the August 17 assault on CSU president Rokovi Kruse and two others at Chümoukedima Police check gate allegedly by personnel led by one ABSI Ruovi Zao and 2IC (ASI) and Mhasi Chadi. In a press note, CSU general secretary Kevisese Krose and information & publicity secy. Mhalevilie Medoze said what initially started as a minor altercation between a constable on duty and the group of three ensued into an unthinkable, uncompromising, senseless act. CSU refuted the allegations, labelling the three as extortionists, of the constable that they
were levying tax of Rs. 100 from a commercial-bound vehicle. CSU claimed that on the pretext of false report by the constable to the 2IC, the latter “directly confronted one of the boys, inflicting physical blows.” After seeing the officer, the other personnel in uniform also started to assault the boys, CSU stated. CSU alleged that the personnel had no mercy, or any sense of compunction for their barbaric act. Though the case may have been amicably settled, out of respect for the sagaciousness of the elderly and village leaders, CSU said the youth had taken the incident seriously. It further claimed that such incidents was not new at the Police check gate, as there were instances where the neighboring villagers and general public had been allegedly manhandled by
the police. In view of this, the union cautioned police personnel manning the check gate to be wary of their own conduct, and to be sensible while dealing with their fellow citizens, failing which the general public will not remain silent spectators. NCYO, NCVSU: New Chümoukedima Youth Organization (NCYO) and New Chümoukedima Village Students’ Union (NCVSU) have also condemned the alleged highhandedness and use of brute force by the police personnel manning the check-gate at Chümoukedima on three of its members--Rokovi Kruse president, Chakhroma Students’ Union & president, New Chümoukedima Youth Organization, Keneingukho Hama, Wrestling secretary and Shezovil Kera, perpetrated on August 17. Students presenting a skit on the genesis of DBC. (NP) Staff Reporter
DIMAPUR, AUG 19 (NPN): Theologians today have to move out of their comfort zones instead of being confined within the four walls of their churches or class rooms if they truly want be followers of Christ to make a difference to those on the world outside. minded the students that the vision of the founders was to prepare those who were willing to serve God. He spoke of the IEF members who had a vision to train up evangelists and this led to establishment of DBC in 1981. Yaden said the founding members were simple men of integrity and faith and loved God. He said they pursued the vision with total commitment and overcame various hurdles while making DBC a reality. Yaden, who was the guest speaker, also spoke
on aspects of education as a means to prepare students. In this context, he said theological knowledge has to be complemented with studying many crucial and relevant issues facing society. This balanced learning would enable bible students to be relevant to their environment and broaden their outlook instead of being limited only to theological subjects. Yaden also spoke on pressing issues like- unemployment, prohibition, clean election and illegal immigration. He gave a
DBC Choir presenting a choral song. (NP) broad perspective on each of them and on the need to revisit present concepts and strategies. He said unemployment is like a runaway inflation -- growing demands and dwindling prospects. He said degrees can’t get jobs and so there has been a focus on skill development. Even after skilling, he said most still don’t want to work. By the 2030, he said automation will practically close the doors on employment for crores of people and so it was time to do some serious thinking.
On prohibition he said the law hasn’t achieved what was desired and there is need to face the facts. On clean elections, he said the church should continue the process four years ahead instead of indulging in a carpet bombing with a plethora of awareness and oath declarations just on the eve of campaigning. He said the entire state has become over dependent on immigrants and it was a serious matter that needed thoughtful remedies. He said presently people were ignoring the imminent dan-
ger of the Trojan horses within society. He also addressed various issues confronting the people in the state and how the environment has influenced the thinking within the church rather than the other way around. On the present scenario, Yaden lamented, “The state is in need of serious reforms today and this (reforms) starts from the mind.” He also challenged the DBC students to pick up the gauntlet thrown by society by going out and
reaching out and touching those suffering and hurting instead of queuing up in churches for jobs or perpetually waiting for the call. He asked students not to restrict their vision but to do what Christ had done by going out into the open world. Earlier in the program, acting principal of Discipleship Bible College, Rev Temsu Imchen, in his welcome address, recounted the yeoman services rendered to the DBC by late LL Yaden who was one of the pioneers of the
college in its early years. He said late Yaden agreed to take over as principal for a month in order to steer the college during one of its most tumultuous phases in the 90s. Students enacted a skit depicting how late D. Haralu, a prominent businessman gave his life to Christ after he was miraculously healed from a debilitating disease after a prayer by church members. Late D. Haralu then invited late Rev. Lano Longchar and donated the land and building for the DBC college. Other highlights included a choral presentation by the DBC choir, male voice presentation by Tongpang and Bokiho, female voice presentation by Jungti and Shilurenla. The programme was moderated by Narka Awomi and Dr. Husazulu Chuzho, assistant professor, Mhonthung Humtsoe pronounced the innovation, associate pastor, DABA, Rev L Lima Jamir pronounced a prayer for Discipleship Bible College, offertory prayer was made by assistant professor by Dr. Narola Walling, and the benediction was pronounced by Dr. Tekayaba. Mnp fake encounters: CBI chief to appear before SC
NEW DELHI, Aug 19 (Agencies): The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) chief, Alok Verma has been asked to depose for the Supreme Court bench hearing a batch of petitions relating to extra-judicial killings in the northeastern state of Manipur, Zeenews reported. According to reports, the CNI chief will appear before the top court bench led by Justice Madan B Lokur and Justice UU Lalit, which is hearing the petitions in connection with some alleged fake encounters in Manipur. The bench will take up the case around 2 PM on Monday. During the previous hearing in the case, the bench had asked Verma to explain the progress made by the agency against those accused of involvement in alleged fake encounters in Manipur. During the hearing, the CBI chief submitted that the agency is still collecting evidence against those accused of involvement in fake encounters in Manipur since a lot of times has passed. Responding to the CBI chief ’s submission before the

top court, the bench chided the central probe agency for slow action and referred to the accused as ‘murderers’ who were roaming freely on streets of Imphal. The apex court bench asked why no arrest has been made in this regard by the central agency. On August 14, in an unprecedented move, at least 300 armed forces personnel had moved the Supreme Court challenging the FIRs registered against them in connection with military operations in the areas where the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) is in force. In their petition, the petitioners claimed that the registration of cases against those serving in highly dis-
turbed and insurgency-hit areas and the subsequent probe by the civil police or the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is a big setback for them and a major detriment for the armed forces. Lawyer Aishwar ya Bhati, who filed the petition before the top court bench comprising Chief Justice Dipak Misra and Justice AM Khanwilkar, alleged on behalf of the petitioners that the registration of FIR and prosecution of armed forces personnel was against the provisions of AFSPA, which grants immunity to them against prosecution for actions performed during official duties. The plea said that such prosecutions lower the morale of the military and paramilitary forces and pose a grave threat to the country’s internal security. Several armed forces personnel are facing prosecution for alleged excesses and fake encounters in states like Manipur where AFSPA is in force. Prosecutions in some of those cases have been initiated following a direction from the apex court, especially in Manipur.
Minister wants NRC update in Tripura Agartala, Aug 19 (PTI): Tripura Tribal Welfare Minister Mevar Kumar Jamatia on Saturday supported the revision of the National Register of Citizens of India (NRC) in the State and hoped that his party, Indigenous Peoples Front of Tripura (IPFT), would soon demand it like several other States. The IPFT is an ally of the ruling alliance headed by the BJP which came to power after the Tripura Assembly polls in February this year. Mr. Jamatia, who is the IPFT General Secretary, said, “We were always seeking NRC in our State (Tripura). Other States are now demanding NRC revision and hopefully our party will also demand it in Tripura.” The IPFT had earlier demanded NRC revision in Tripura claiming that the indigenous communities in the State were suffering from identity crisis. He said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP president Amit Shah had made a lot of statements on the NRC and said talks on revising the national register is going on at the central level. “I think this issue (NRC) is a burning issue,” he said.
Dialogue on prospects of Act East Policy Correspondent
IMPHAL, Aug 19: Manipur government’s Act East Policy Committee in association with Indo Myanmar Fraternal Alliance organized a two-day citizens’ dialogue on the “Prospects of Manipur and Sagaing Region, in light of India-Myanmar cross border Initiatives” at Imphal Hotel on Sunday. Addressing the inaugural function, titular king of Manipur Leisemba Sanajaoba said that if the present situation in Manipur, where bandhs and blockades were rampant, continued, it would be difficult for the state to avail the opportunities of the policy. “We must shun all forms of bandhs and blockades to avail the opportunities of the Indo-Myanmar cross border and Act East Policy and focus on development,” he said. Frequent bandhs and blockades were the hindrances to development of the state, he added. Myanmar’s Sagaing Region and India’s Manipur has to take vital part in the successful operation of this

Both the regions need to maintain good relationship and bring development together, the titular king said. “We can’t divert the different issues being faced by us, but it is better to find a solution by diplomatic and political means,” he added. He appreciated the state government under the chief minister N Biren Singh and Act East Policy Committee’s contribution for opening
the international entry-exit checkpoint at Moreh-Tamu border. He also urged the chief minister to construct one Buddhist guest house in Imphal so that Myanmarese Buddhists going to Bodha Gaya, Bihar, could sojourn there. State IPR director Heisnam Balkrisna Singh and convener of Act East Policy Committee RK Shivachandra Singh delivered keynote addresses on the occasion.
The Citizens’ dialogue was attended by entrepreneurs from inside and outside the state. The inaugural day was marked by a discussion on “Academia Interface and Prospects of Collaborations,” in which delegates from Myanmar also took part as resource persons. Assam, Manipur extend aid for Kerala flood victims
Guwahati/ Imphal, Aug 19 (Agencies/ PTI): Assam and Manipur governments have extended financial aid to Kerala government in view of the devastating flood in the southern state. Assam chief minister, S a r b a n a n d a S o n owa l announced that it would extend financial aid of R s 3 c r o r e t o Ke r a l a Government. The Chief Minister also directed the State Revenue and Disaster Management Department to open helpline to extend help to the people of Assam who are trapped in the deluge and to expedite their relief and rescue. Meanwhile, the Revenue and Disaster Manage-
started fleeing the locality. “I had my elder brother and parents to look after the family when we moved out. Now they are no more and responsibility of the entire extended family has come upon me. We have been living in footpaths, villages and urban slums ever since. We have now got a new home in this colony,” Das told indianexpress.com. The erstwhile Left Front government allotted them a colony of nearly 70 thousand square feet area at South Narayanpur village in Mohanpur sub-division of West Tripura in 2017. The colony was occupied by 55 refugee families this month. Every family was given entitlement of a small plot of 840 sq. ft. which has space for barely a small room and a makeshift toilet. Over 6,500 non-tribal families were displaced due to armed insurgency and ethnic clashes in different parts of Tripura since 1980. Some of them were displaced more than once due to insurgency or development projects. 237 families among them were
rehabilitated so far. The fifty-five families which got their new homes at Udbastu Gopal Colony, have their ancestral homes at Gabardi, Takarjala, Jampuijala and Mandwai villages, which faced the severe brunt of ethnic clashes. Rabin Banik, 33, who fled his home as a child from Jampuijala village in Sipahijala district, says his family has spent sleepless nights in the pavements of Agartala city after displacement from home. “We have lived in sub-human conditions in slums at Bitterban, Mullapara and have stayed on extremely low rent at Anandanagar, Chandrapur, and other villages for years. I grew up without much education and have to fend off odd jobs. This new home is a much-needed relief,” he said. Tripura experienced its worst ethnic riot between tribal and non-tribal communities in June 1980. The state is a land of mixed habitation comprising of tribal and non-tribal, the latter mostly from Bengali communities. But just like
the shade under a lamp, Tripura shares a chequered history of armed insurgency movement for over three decades. Organized insurgency in Tripura started shortly before 1980. The armed insurgency which originated from tribal groups, then struggling for identity and self-determination, started in full-swing from 1980 onwards. Dinesh Singh Committee, an inquiry commission set up by Ministry of Home Affairs after the riots, found that 1,300 people were killed during the clashes. Unofficial reports, however, claimed 50 thousand persons died in the riots. Rajesh Dey, 40, who hailed from Takarjala, said he was eight-years-old when his family left everything behind and fled for life in the face of insurgent attacks. However, over three decades after his displacement, Rajesh says he is still afraid to return to his ancestral home. “Our lands were grabbed by occupants. Tripura now has much more peace than those turbulent days. There is no guarantee

CPI-M urges Tripura govt to help flood-hit Kerala
Agartala, Aug 19 (IANS): The CPI-M on Sunday urged the BJP government in Tripura to contribute funds to the flood-hit people in Kerala, pointing out that no BJP-ruled state has yet donated any amount to the southern state. "Though no BJP ruled state in the country has contributed any amount to Kerala, we urge upon the Tripura government to help the state (Kerala) and its hapless people," Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) central committee member Bijan Dhar told the media. He said: "Some non-BJP ruled states and many organisations and individuals have come forward to help the state (Kerala),

The state government has also demanded the commission to earmark at least 5% of divisible pool for local self bodies and separate provision of funding for Tripura Tribal Areas ADC area development.
Displaced families find new homes in Tripura
Agartala, Aug 19 (Agencies): Thirty-eight years after they were rendered homeless by ravaging ethnic riots and armed insurgency, Ranjan Das, Rabindra Banik, Laxmi Rani Biswas and others have found new homes at a rehabilitation colony in South Narayanpur of West Tripura, The Indian Express reported. It was a humid Saturday in 1980 when Ranjan Das (now 50) fled with his family from Gabardi village in Takarjala block, 40 Km from Agartala, to Sekerkote in West Tripura. Ethnic riots broke out on June 8. “I was around twelve years old. They started killing people in our village. My parents fled the village with me and took shelter at Sekerkote”, Ranjan Das, 50, of Gabardi village in Takarjala said. After running helterskelter for a few years, his family returned to the ancestral village. that such incidents wouldn’t repeat. We are afraid to return there,” he said. Renowned writer and historical critic, Bikach Choudhury says in his famous article on the riots of Tripura that myths and misconceptions dominate any discourse on sociopolitical developments in Tripura over the past three decades. Choudhury also said that demographic imbalance entailed by the disastrous partition of India in 1947, marginalization of indigenous tribals by settlers and the “ethnic explosion” over the past three decades, are inevitably cited to oversimplify the interplay of complex socio-political developments and the state’s history. On fear psychosis in returning to homes, Laxmi Rani Biswas said she tried to regain access to her family property at Jampuijala. She was faced by opposition by local occupants who grabbed her land. “There were a few tribal families, who helped us to come back safely. Land issue is and always has been the main issue of discord,” she said.
which was hit by one of the worst natural catastrophes of the century." Dhar, also the secretary of the Tripura state committee of the Left party, said that the CPI-M would launch an 11-day long fund collection drive on August 21 across the state to help the affected people of Kerala. "We do not know whether we would be able to collect funds in the state as a massive political violence has been unleashed by the ruling BJP activists to destroy the democratic activities of the opposition parties. Everyday, two-tothree attacks are being carried out on the opposition parties, especially the Left parties," he added.

K o da g u, A u g 1 9 (IANS): About 3,500 marooned people were rescued in Karnataka’s worst floodhit Kodagu district even as incessant rains hampered relief work, the government said on Sunday. “The Indian Army, Navy and other state and central agencies have rescued more than 3,500 people so far,” a statement from Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy’s office said. Of the hundreds stranded across this floodhit hilly district, about 270 km from Bengaluru, the 3,500 rescued till Sunday noon have been shifted to 30 relief camps and efforts were on to reach the others held up on hilltops. The exact number of people still stranded across the district could not be ascertained from the officials. Located in the Western Ghats mountain ranges, the coffee-growing district is the worst-hit due to the southwest monsoon rains since June first week. The incessant rains have been causing flooding and landslips across the region, damaging the arterial roads. Over 60 people have been stranded in Mukkodlu village of the district, but

UK police arrest Dawood’s key aide Jabir Moti
Ministers of environment have become ministers of ‘approval’: Jairam Ramesh
New Delhi, Aug 19 (PTI): A key aide of Dawood Ibrahim, India’s most wanted terrorist, was arrested by British police at London’s Hilton Hotel on Friday. Jabir Siddiq, aka Jabir Moti, is believed to be the right-hand man of Dawood, managing his investments in the UK, UAE and around the world. The Pakistani national, reportedly in the UK on a 10-year visa, is likely to have been held on drugs related charges. “We are unable to release any details at this stage,” a spokesperson for London’s Metropolitan Police said. Jabir Moti, 51, is believed to be close to both Dawood and his wife, Mehjabeen, as their finance manager. Jabir’s arrest on Friday is likely to have been a result of intelligence sharing between India and the UK. Meanwhile, a newlyupdated list of financial sanctions released by the UK government earlier this week notes three known addresses in Pakistan for Dawood -– House No 37, 30th Street – defence, Housing Authority, Karachi; Palatial bungalow in the hilly area in Noorabad, Karachi; and White House, Near Saudi Mosque, Clifton, Karachi.
New Delhi, Aug 19 (PTI): The ministers of environment since 2014 have been “ministers of approval”, said senior Congress leader Jairam Ramesh, who held the portfolio during the UPA rule, and argued that the job of the minister was to protect the environment and “not necessarily clear proposals”. Speaking at the launch of book “On Jim Corbett’s Trail: And Other tales from the Jungle”, written by country’s foremost conservationist AJT Johnsingh, Ramesh added that if the present minister of environment’s “metric of success is based on the number of approvals he gave, then he is not doing his job”. “Is there an environment minister? I mean, from 2014, the ministers of environment have been ministers of approval. And if the minister of environment is going to give a press conference saying that I have cleared thousands and thousands of proposals... then he is not doing his job,” the former Union minister said. Talking about the time when he was the minister of environment, he said that he always judged himself by the “number of questions asked, number of rejections,

Jairam Ramesh (file) the number of impediments he put”, and not by the approvals he gave. Ramesh was the minister of environment and forests from May 2009 to July 2011 in the Congressled government. “It is a tough call and I think it is important to pick your battles if you want to win the larger war. I was minister of environment for 26 months, if I had not taken the decisions that I took I would have lasted 60 months,” said Ramesh, adding that during his tenure more often that not his choice was in favour of conservation and protection only. Underlining the battles, those he picked during his stint as the minister, he said one of the most celebrated one that he can remember was the protection of “Tadoba Andhari-Tiger Reserve (TATR) which was
threatened by the proposal of huge coal mine”. The Tadoba national park is Maharashtra’s oldest and biggest national park. “The coal mine was proposed for good whole decade, but then I went there and saw for myself the devastation that it will cause and put a stop to it... well, now it is back on the agenda. “Then there were instances in Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh. Numerous examples like this across the country. There were very few instance when I actually took a decision in favour of the project proponents,” he said. Further, he claimed that very frequently the proponents for projects were governments themselves, centre or state, and not the private sector. “They (governments) were the worst culprits in this regard,” he said. He, however, did admit that there were instances when he had to make different choices. “The fact is that you have to navigate both sides. There is a very large community of people who think that conservation is good in theory but when it comes to practice well we can postpone it for a while if it means more investment, more jobs, more industry.
Chandigarh, Aug 19 (IANS): Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh on Sunday said his Cabinet Minister Navjot Singh Sidhu’s hug to Pakistan Army chief Qamar Javed Bajwa in Islamabad was “not a nice gesture and was completely avoidable”. Sidhu should have avoided indulging in such a gesture when Indian soldiers are getting killed every day on the borders, the Chief Minister told reporters here. “After all, it is the Army chief who gives orders to kill, with soldiers merely following the order,” the Chief Minister said. “Bajwa is responsible for the deaths of our soldiers and Sidhu should not have shown such niceties towards him,” Amarinder Singh said. As for Sidhu sitting next to Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) President Masood Khan at the swearing-in of Imran Khan as Prime Minister of Pakistan, Amarinder Singh said that the former cricketer “possibly did not know who he was and in any case the seating arrangement was not in his hands”. New Delhi, Aug 19 (PTI): The Supreme Court has restored the honour of an Army veteran who was among the officers who led the Operation Blue Star in 1984 and upheld a decision to exonerate him of charges of alleged misconduct and award him a rank of Lieutenant Colonel postretirement. The top court upheld the decision of Armed Forces Tribunal setting aside the “punishment of reprimand” awarded to Major (now retd) Kunwar Ambreshwar Singh on charge of retaining certain electronic items recovered during the operation to flush out Sikh extremists from the Golden Temple Complex. A bench of Justices A K Sikri and Ashok Bushan dismissed the appeal of the Centre against the AFT order but reduced the cost imposed on the government from Rs 10 lakh to Rs 1 lakh. “We see no merit in this appeal and the same is, accordingly, dismissed. However, we find that the costs of Rs 10 lakhs imposed upon the appellant is quite excessive. We reduce the said costs to Rs 1 lakh,” the bench said. The AFT, Lucknow, in its verdict on August 11 last year had exonerated Singh of all charges and set aside the order passed by the Chief of
the Army Staff refusing to grant substantive rank of Lt Col by time scale to him and all other directions which deprived him promotional avenues. It had said, the government will promote Singh notionally on the substantive rank of Lt Col (Time Scale) along with his batchmates for the purpose of payment of arrears of salary and post-retiral dues, pension and other benefits. “The effect of Operation Blue Star of June, 1984 still haunting and the present case is offshoot of said operation wherein a commissioned officer of Indian Army is struggling for justice since last 33 years,” the tribunal had observed. Singh was commissioned in the Army in 1967. As a Major in the 26 Madras Regiment in June 1984, he was posted at Jalandhar as part of the 38 Infantry Brigade and 15 Infantry Division. It was then that he was assigned the task to flush out Sikh extremists from the temple complex in Amritsar. The tribunal in its order noted that Singh, following the command of his superior Lt Col KMG Pannikar, led initial entry into Golden Temple Complex and apprehended one of the Sevadars of Jarnail Singh Bhindrawala. He also apprehended a large number of extremists,

The Congress chief revoked Aiyar’s suspension from the party yesterday on the recommendation of its central disciplinary committee. Aiyar had also courted controversy when he hosted a former Pakistani foreign minister and senior Congress leaders, including former prime minister Manmohan Singh, at his residence here ahead of the Gujarat polls. The issue had become a major campaign point for the BJP with Modi personally raking it up.
however, dismissed opposition’s demand for Sidhu’s resignation. As for Sidhu’s visit to Pakistan for the swearingin ceremony, Amarinder Singh said it was in his personal capacity due to his close relations with Imran Khan from their cricketing days. The Chief Minister said he will meet his counterparts from Haryana and Himachal Pradesh on Monday to discuss and draw a joint strategy to combat drug abuse. He had accepted the
invite for the meeting from Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar on Saturday. Underlining the need for collective efforts to counter the drug menace, Amarinder Singh said that he had initiated the process several weeks ago with a letter to the Chief Ministers of the neighbouring states. “No state can afford to ignore the drug abuse issue, which has extremely dangerous implications for our future generations,” he added.

Rahul’s love Mani is back: BJP New Delhi, Aug 19 (PTI): The BJP today took on Rahul Gandhi over the revocation of suspension from his party of Mani Shankar Aiyar, who had used objectionable language against Prime Minister Narendra Modi, saying it exposed the Congress chief and his “love for a person of many controversies”. Aiyar was suspended from the primary membership of the Congress on December 7 last year for his “neech aadmi” remarks against Modi on the eve of the Gujarat Assembly polls. Addressing a press conference at the BJP headquarters here, party spokesperson Sambit Patra questioned why Aiyar was taken back by the Congress, wondering if the party was incomplete without him. “Rahul Gandhi had clarified that the Congress

Supreme Court recovered a huge cache arms, ammunition, explosives and documents and had made clearance of Western and Southern Parikrama, final clearance of Akal Takht, neutralization of Gurdwara at Dukh Bhajan Berry, the facts not denied by the Army or the government. After the completion of the operations, the officer was undisputedly recommended for Ashok Chakra. The government did not categorically deny the fact of recommendation of the gallantry award to Singh, but maintained it was a confidential record and may have been weeded out.
The tribunal noted that the problem started on June 8, 1984, when some troops of the Unit recovered four electronic items, which included one Videocassette Recorder, one-three-in-one music system, one Akai Deck and one colour TV. The tribunal said that those who actually took the decision to retain the items as souvenir have been promoted to higher ranks and enjoyed higher status and rank of army service and a person who has worked hard with appreciation in his service career, recommendee of Ashok Chakra, suffered because of no fault.

Closer to a cataclysm
M
onsoon fury has wreaked havoc on various parts of India such as the northeast, parts of the north and more vehemently south notably Kerala and Karnataka. Nagaland also experienced a very devastating month when heavy rains lashed the state and triggering landslides in the hills flooding in the foothill areas. The devastation in Kerala was most severe where nearly 400 people had died as there are fears of the toll climbing higher. The state also faced the wanton fury of sluice gates of the Mulliperiyar dam being opened at a time when water level many other dams downstream were inching towards the danger mark. The combined effect of the torrential rains and the release of million cusecs of water from various dams only made the already rain soaked and landslide affected state worse. Kochi airport was submerged under three to four feet of water. Since a week back the airport has been closed and is likely to be open after August 26. The state government has an uphill task since all power supply and communication links have snapped, there is shortage of food, potable water and medicines and scores of people awaiting evacuation from affected areas. The Kerala government has sought emergency relief of Rs 2,500 crore from the Centre, saying the state has suffered losses of Rs 25,000 crores. During his recent visit to Kerala where he went on aerial survey with chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan, the prime minister Modi announced ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh per person to the next kin of the deceased and Rs 50,000 to the injured. The abnormal weather conditions that has swept across India was not unexpected. In fact the pattern has been observed during the past few years. Only last year in 2017, nature unleashed some catastrophic weather across the world. At the beginning of 2017, Australia experienced one of the hottest summers on record in Sydney and Brisbane, followed by a killer summer heat wave across southern Europe and wildfires triggered by heat in California. At the same time, the 2017 monsoon season brought considerable rains to the Indian subcontinent, and resulted in devastating floods in parts of India, Pakistan, Nepal and Bangladesh (one of the most flood vulnerable countries in the world), causing more than 1,000 deaths. There is a difference between “weather “ and “climate” as the former relates to conditions in the atmosphere over a short time. In the latter, it relates to how the atmosphere behaves over a longer period of time. Climate change generally means changes in long-term averages of daily levels of temperature and rainfall. In a warming world, we can expect it to get wetter. The distribution of the rainfall throughout the year could change as we experience longer, drier spells, although when rain falls it may be in intense bursts. That being so, the issue of climate change is also a factor that is related with mindless destruction of forests and precipitation of the “green house gas effect” from various chemicals and fossil fuel emissions. It may not be possible to immediately stop the erratic climate change but certain urgent actions should be taken to reduce the destruction of our environment can help in a significant way towards decreasing the potential threat.
DailyDevotion Self-Awareness Come to Me… —Matthew 11:28 God intends for us to live a well-rounded life in Christ Jesus, but there are times when that life is attacked from the outside. Then we tend to fall back into self-examination, a habit that we thought was gone. Self-awareness is the first thing that will upset the completeness of our life in God, and selfawareness continually produces a sense of struggling and turmoil in our lives. Self-awareness is not sin, and it can be produced by nervous emotions or by suddenly being dropped into a totally new set of circumstances. Yet it is never God’s will that we should be anything less than absolutely complete in Him. Anything that disturbs our rest in Him must be rectified at once, and it is not rectified by being ignored but only by coming to Jesus Christ. If we will come to Him, asking Him to produce Christ-awareness in us, He will always do it, until we fully learn to abide in Him. Never allow anything that divides or destroys the oneness of your life with Christ to remain in your life without facing it. Beware of allowing the influence of your friends or your circumstances to divide your life. This only serves to sap your strength and slow your spiritual growth. Beware of anything that can split your oneness with Him, causing you to see yourself as separate from Him. Nothing is as important as staying right spiritually. And the only solution is a very simple one— “Come to Me….” The intellectual, moral, and spiritual depth of our reality as a person is tested and measured by these words. Yet in every detail of our lives where we are found not to be real, we would rather dispute the findings than come to Jesus.

Nagaland Post, Dimapur MONDAY, AUGUST 20, 2018
S
even years had passed since the liberalization of Indian economy. Some years were troublesome. Stock, LIC, UTI scams had rocked the country. Globalisation though in was yet to be accepted. It was at that moment, in 1998, a pure politician with little credentials in economics – Atal Behari Vajpayee - held the mantle of the country. And he did economic wonders. He virtually led the roadmap for the future. His regime was a political marvel. For the first time a non-Congress party, BJP was the leader of a difficult coalition, NDA. It had 24 parties in it. Unlike the previous United Front coalition it did a miracle. It completed its full term, gave the country a stable regime. Socially, politically and economically it was a success. He, it can be said today, re-laid the path to progress. After 1950s, it was a new era. It reformed the reforms of 1991 too. A policy the successive UPA-I, UPA–II and the NDA-II cannot budge. And politically he set the tone for the coalition rule that continues even 14 years after he demitted office. He established that India is a social coalition and the
political process could not do without this basic. It has become the fundamental of India’s inclusive progress. It opened up a new era of foreign relations with opening up the markets to Southeast Asia – the Look East policy, was not averse to relationship with China despite unease and gave the new concept to explore Africa as the future market. The close ties with ASEAN are the results of his effort. Even he was not averse to good neighbourly relations with a difficult Pakistan. He did not ride the bus to Lahore merely to open up the travel but to pave the way for strong trade relations. If it did not succeed for General Parvez Musharraf ’s Kargil misadventure, he did not mind calling him to Agra for a solution. And who does not know that he was instrumental in more than one way for making the CEO of Pakistan, Musharraf, its president. Pakistan failed him in many ways, including the attack during his time on Parliament. Yes, it was all that Vajpayee did at a critical time. He maintained a continuous dialogue with all his allies and even the opposition. His talks with the
Vajpayee had an onerous dream. It was about an Indian going abroad with rupee and the foreigners lapping it up. This has yet to come true. The wonders of the regime was freeing Indians from queues of all sorts and low prices. opposition made his parliamentary work easier. It was not easy for him to move the economy the way he wanted. It is known that International Monetary Fund and World Bank were breathing down the neck of India. The Shivaji concealed agenda was to benefit some of the powerful western economies. Vajpayee as a skilled statesman neither annoyed the Breton Woods institution nor some of the fraternal organisations within the Sangh parivar. He carried out a nuclear agenda that nation prided for. The Pokaharan II was neither an aberration nor an expression of an adamant attitude. It was a visionary move to pressurize the West to make them understand that India was changing and even with imposition of sanctions they could not do without India. It was the beginning of a new era of nuclear cooperation and technology transfer without signing the NPT that later his successor
Manmohan Singh could achieve. Vajpayee’s move paved the way for close cooperation with the US and India’s self sufficiency in other scientific area including the space. India is today launching Sarkar 104 satellites through one vehicle bringing in business from the most advanced western nations because of his subtle but actually aggressive policies. It also paved the way for the digital India, where satellites play critical role in connectivity, be it phones or inernet. The massive infrastructure projects – opening up the aviation sector, Golden Quadrilateral highways, PM’s gram sadak yojana – led a massive connectivity to create a unified Indian market. The tariff barriers between states were conceptualized to end finally in the GST today. New barriers like multiple kinds of toll remain despite a uniform Rs 8 per litre petro cess. If it is abolished the new India of his dreams
would come true. He started the disinvestment ministry, sold some PSUs but did not mind going slow after the Centaur controversy. Gradually the government exited from many areas including now trying to get rid of the critical Air India – that was acquired from Tatas in 1953, possibly the beginning of government monopolization in the Nehru era. Now with an open aviation policy that Vajpayee launched that monopoly looks out of sync. He had new vision for the North East, synchronised with his Look East policy. His DONER ministry had decided to invest in a massive way in NE, including Nagaland, where he led efforts to sort out insurgency. But he did not mind stopping the massive package when some poky newsman told him of the massive leakage. He redrew it and today on his path BJP has almost a monopoly in NE. Vajpayee had an onerous dream. It was about an Indian going abroad with rupee and the foreigners lapping it up. This has yet to come true. The wonders of the regime was freeing Indians from queues of all sorts –
fair price food grain shops, telephone, LPG gas by ensuring low prices. It led to a thriving market and a life of ease. Even house prices were static for almost six years of his rule. Some economists were wondering whether the country was heading for depression. But the growth continued, education improved and overall happiness engulfed most Indians. Few of his successors could match his feat. Vajpayee worked with contrasting characters and allies. It was possible for a personality like him only. He had an Alsatian dog and a pussycat as pets. The dog would sit by his side and the cat on his lap. When he was not home the two were seen to engage in naughty games. That was possibly the secret of Vajpayee’s success, which needs to be emulated by all political parties. Vajpayee – a practical politician – realized that India’s politics could not succeed unless the people’s economy was taken care of. He dipped his politics in economy to create a comfort level for the people. A diagnosis not easy to follow but every government is trying to do that whether in the name of the poor, dalits or kisan.
Post-mortem
‘W
Now walk the road
ALK THE TALK’, this striking catchphrase has r un through political vein of state politics since inception of statehood, more so with regional party in ruling. The talk was and is Naga problem but essentially a desired solution which has been phrased and re-phrased by successive state government in many decorated words from UDF’s ‘for Naga independence’ to NPC’s ‘solution not election’ to DAN’s ‘active facilitator - pave the way” and currently PDA’s ‘election for solution’. Seen from other prism we also observed reincarnation of hitherto branded hostile or puppet government of NNO, UDF, NNDP & Congress to a hospitable or pampered government of NPF-led DAN and NDPP-led PDA of the day and not forgetting U-turn in ‘pro-Naga regional party versus anti-Naga national party’ considering amusing present ground reality. If not for Framework Agreement signed over 36 months ago the ‘walk the talk’ may still have some relevance worth walking extra mile even to see endpoint. But for the fact Framework is done, finished on 3rd August 2015 with broad principles unilaterally agreed, thereafter GOI now and then clarifying arisen confusion that nowhere in the agreement is mentioned sovereignty or integration, where is the logic for state government jumping into a settled ground now and cry integration? This way if one is to rescreen whole scene of “Walk the Talk” in reverse order or comparative order one will only conclude the entire show is only ‘Talk the Talk’ or doubletalk. Perhaps the starting note sounds skeptical but the background is reflected to illustrate swing role played by successive government and more importantly to pinpoint the oddity and lost priority of our constitutionally elected government. Nagaland is problem state and that problem is of Naga problem. Gone too deep into it state government for few decades now seems to have willfully forgone all other confronting problems in the State despite urgent need for serious concern and concentration. No doubt the irksome unsolved Naga problem has become so overwhelming it has painfully impacted upon normal life of many Naga community scattered everywhere. Still then state government in biting more
than can chew, has unjustifiably sacrificed the genuine interest of State and basic needs of her citizens beyond acceptable limit. Nagaland statehood is not a fixed milestone on the road to simply indicate the length and distance traversed or a signboard at crossroads; rather she is the road along which comes progress, development, employment, public distribution system, public harmony, security and all those lollipopslike promises written over and over in party manifesto before election and common minimum program after election. If statehood should be treated as fixed milestone, neighboring states like Manipur, Meghalaya, and Mizoram should be many miles behind us but they have impressively overtaken us in many fields. Nagaland must move on with others or like others. Whether State has actually ‘walked the talk’ or simply ‘talked the talk’ she has undeniably invested many years, huge financial resources and large human forces beyond calculation. State government extending logistic backup though non-state actor in negotiation process is indeed laudable but too much too long to the point of seemingly getting obsessed or suspiciously looking for perfect alibi to pocket public fund to the fullest meantime is totally offensive. We did not know and we do not know even now, how long it will take to bring a solution or implement it but we certainly know elected government goes for five years only or even less and same five years repeated again and again is actually becoming complete electoral mockery and wastage. Every candidate, whether win or loss as well as voters know that beside large scale cash politics and some for party principle or development or employment only few settle votes for other issues during election. Nevertheless, public at large expect elected member and incoming government to bring home development, employment and other public benefits. Facilitating of present nature, I repeat ‘of present nature’ at irrecoverable expense of public welfare is never pre or during election commitment of individual candidate(s) or choice of representative by constituency. In other words it is never constituency mandate but post election suo moto arrangement and decision of elected government and unfortunately the apathy and absence of critical public
give un-mandated legitimacy to government to act in order of present nature. Now main point of concern; when will government actually walk the road to facilitate swelling problems in the state with same heart & soul, time, labor and resources? Wonder how much money is drained, how many people are dragged into it, how many non stakeholders are accommodated, how many times CSO/pubic consultation level after level is called, how many times Assembly/alliance/party/cabinet etc resolution is adopted, how much publicity is created, how many trips abroad and to Delhi and so on. Voice unheard down the corridor of power, we are passing through perhaps beyond recovery point: alarming rise and fall of personal and public asset respectively, ever spreading cancerous corruption from top to bottom, skyrocketing election expense, mushrooming unemployment amongst educated & qualified, lifeline roads turning into menacing potholes and landslide zones, spider hatched-like illegal immigrants pouring in, potentiality of splitting existing state into Frontier Nagaland, to name the worst few. Is government honestly concerned with these burning issues? If so, government should be convening facilitating-like Assembly sessions, cabinet & advisors, parliamentarians meetings, inviting one party & all party, CSOs/Hohos & public for consultations without excuses. We are nobody to advise government if things are going well but we are somebody who will question when government blatantly ignores its priority and constitutional obligation. Precisely electorates elect government to accomplish set of priorities and definitely not for wasting precious time and strength looking for something akin to missing goose in wild bush. Maybe not the best of solution (1960) yet public endured many trials during first four decades, maybe with best of solution after long wait of next two decades or even beyond meantime pushing development, employment, corruption, illegal immigrant etc issues to the back row, how far can public endurance go? How far can elected government talk the talk? High time government ‘walk the road’ even if dusty or mud-sliding. Vaprumu Demo, Upper Agri Kohima
Climate change and global warming in Nagaland and the world
I
t is evident from the international newsroom to the local dailies, that nature’s fury has been hard felt across the world. From the wildfires in the US state of California which has charred 1200 km2 of land area to the floods in Kerela that rendered more than a lakh people homeless, the number of natural calamities appears to be on the rise everywhere. Nagaland too has witnessed excess rainfall and soaring temperatures like never before. Summer in Dimapur is almost unbearable and the electricity demand rises with every increase in degree Celsius. The incessant rain generated massive soil erosion, which in turn cut-off vital highways. The state capital seems to be worst affected in terms of road connectivity. Increasing water levels triggered floods in several regions and raging rivers have claimed precious lives. In 2012, a report by the Indian Network for Climate Change Assessment projected an increase in temperature and rainfall in the North Eastern region within the next decade. The findings indicated that Nagaland would experience around 1.6oC - 1.8oC increase in temperature and 10-20% increase in precipitation between 2021-2050, as compared to 1961-1990 level. These projections appear to hold true given our present condition. It serves as a wake-up call for us and confirms the urgency to give global warming some serious attention. In a layman’s term, climate change and global warming is a process which causes the earth’s temperature to rise. It is mainly caused by human activities like burning of fossil fuel, deforestation and improper methods of waste management. When the earth becomes warmer, various changes occur in the climatic condi-
tions. The normal pattern of rainfall, wind, humidity and the temperature is disturbed, and we witness abnormal geographical events. In December 2015, 195 countries signed the Paris Climate Agreement which aimed to limit the earth’s temperature from crossing 2oC of preindustrial levels. Beyond this scientist say, the earth would see the worst extremes of global warming. To restrict global warming within this level, all participating countries resolved to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions. India committed to cut its fossil fuel consumption by 40%. The European Union also guaranteed to reduce its CO2 emissions. Recently, the city of Paris imposed a ban on plastic straws. It joins Vancouver, Seattle and Miami Beach along with Taiwan, the United Kingdom and Costa Rica in declaring war on plastics. From these examples, it is evident that the world is transitioning into a new era of a sustainable and clean environment. The question is, what are we Nagas doing about our environment here? Two visible factors that contribute to global warming in our state would arguably be the huge number of motor vehicles and the rising level of deforestation. Undoubtedly, Nagas love cars and owning one has become like a matter of prestige in the society. However, its use is complemented by the demand for fossil fuels which produces CO2. It is interesting to note that a normal tree can absorb 1 ton of CO2 over its lifespan whereas the average car emits about 6 tons of CO2 every year. Such a comparison reveals a negative trend and manifests the importance of savings trees and reducing our fuel consumption. (To be concluded) Anguvika Inakhe Yepthomi
Reader’s Post Sir,
KASU appeals SBI
The Kiphire Area Students Union (KASU) on August 18 visited the State Bank of India, Kiphire Branch and learnt that the Bank is facing network problem where public are unable to make transaction since many days. Following the heavy landslide and blockage of road since last two weeks, the Kiphire public are facing shortage of essential commodities and untold problems. Moreover, such network problem in the bank added another dilemma to the public. In this trend of emergency situation, proper network connectivity in the bank should be maintained so as to make swift transaction. Kiphire district have only SBI and Nagaland State Cooperative Bank (NSCB) banks and public depend on these bank, but failure on the part of the bank in whatever reason is a distressing story for Kiphire as many students are studying outside Kiphire. In this regard, the KASU appeals the higher up of SBI to look into the matter on priority and make proper arrangement at the earliest for better transaction. Isaac Tsalumbi, President, KASU

double DA issued in favour of planning department under demand No. 27, dated November 3, 2017 and December 20, 2017. The rights group sought clarification from the finance department as to why DA, dated March 30, 2018 and amounting to Rs 1 crore was issued in favour of the planning department when the works were carried out under evaluation department, which was a separate department having its own demand No. 44, thus reducing the evaluation department to a mere corporation and government undertaking. Warning that failure to clarify on these issues would establish that the beneficiaries under CMCF were bogus and the DAs released by the finance department were anomalous, PDR threatened to take appropriate course of action to bring out the truth behind the silence.
City’s overbridge in disrepair
(From p-1) On an average the bridge could be serving as a transit for tens of thousands of vehicles daily. Several hutments have encroached the areas around the base of the bridge which can also be a cause for serious problem if not removed. The cause to the fire that broke out last year below the over bridge was blamed on electrical short circuit ; but the illegal hutments that have mushroomed will pose another danger in future and which also bears mute testimony to the criminal neglect by authorities.
Rs 88k cr crypto scam: Rlys operating ratio crosses 111 pc mark in July Gujarat kingpin Darji held
NEW DELHI, AUG 19 (AGENCIES): Main accused of Gujrat Bitcoin scam Divyesh Darji was arrested by police from Delhi Airport after his arrival from Dubai on Saturday. He is the Asia head of Ponzi scheme Bitconnect, registered in the UK and being operated from Burj Khalifa tower in Dubai. Darji and associates allegedly siphoned off about Rs 88,000 crore from gullible investors. This money was routed through his company called Bitconnect. com, launched around the time of demonetisation. Most of the promoters of this scheme fled abroad after Gujarat CID started the investigation. Many high-profile names, including politicians, are accused in this scam along with Mahendra Chaudhari, Satish Kumbhani and Divyesh Darji. Divyesh Darji is one of the kingpins of the fraud. These accused launched various websites as plat-
forms, including www.zewanghelp.com, to promote their virtual ponzi scheme. These fraudsters were using virtual currencies to perpetrate their frauds. They used a Multi-Level Marketing (MLM) method that involves from the existing investors to funds contributed by new investors introduced by the existing ones through online platforms. They solicit new investors by fake promising to invest funds to generate high returns in the virtual currency – bitcoin. In April DNA had reported why Indian crypto players are fleeing India, and why they have started operation centres in Dubai and other countries after the RBI’s order for banks and financial institutions to not to deal with digital currencies. The government has indicated in the last budget that cryptocurrency is not a legal tender in India. “The
government does not consider cryptocurrencies as legal tender or coin,” Finance Minister Arun Jaitley had said in the Budget speech. Cryptocurrencies are facing worldwide clampdown since last year because of higher fluctuations in prices. China has banned the exchanges in September 2017, as part of a broader crackdown. Regulators in Hong Kong and Singapore have also warned against ICOs, citing concerns about fraud, money laundering, and terrorist financing. South Korean regulators said they would ban ICOs, without giving details. No Legal Tender The Centre has indicated in the last budget that cryptocurrency is not a legal tender in India. “The govt does not consider cryptocurrencies as legal tender or coin,” Finance Minister Arun Jaitley said in Budget speech.
New Delhi, Aug 19 (IANS): How much did Indian Railways spend to earn every Rs 100 in April-July this year? In this period, the national transporter set a record-high operating ratio of 111.51 per cent - which means it spent Rs 111.51 to generate every Rs 100, reflective of lower growth in traffic against the set target and heavy outgo on account of increased pension liability and working expenses. Operating ratio is a gauge of operational efficiency that measures expenses as a proportion of revenue. It indicates the organisation’s operating expenses divided by its operating revenues, which helps to check its performance. A higher ratio in railways indicates less ability to generate surplus funds that
could be used for capital investments such as laying new lines and deploying more coaches. Facing stiff competition from other modes of transport in carrying people and freight, the Railways earned Rs 17,273.37 crore from passengers against a target of Rs 17,736.09 crore in the first four months of the current fiscal, according to data put together by the Railways’ finance wing. Railways’ goods earnings were also below the budget projection during April-July 2018 at Rs 36,480.41 crore as against the target of Rs 39,253.41 crore. The total earnings of the Railways for the current fiscal ending July is Rs 56,717.84 crore against the target of Rs 61,902.51 crore.

railways has paid about Rs 12,000 crore during the period under review. However, the official said this was a lean period for traffic and typically operating ratio improves in the last quarter of a financial year. The operating ratio has been hovering above 90 per cent for the last five or six years. For the whole of financial year 2018-19, operating ratio is estimated at 92.8 per cent as against 96 per cent in 2017-18. There are high hopes on freight earnings with estimated increase of 51 million tonnes in 201819. “The last three months of the fiscal are crucial when freight picks up pace and we are hopeful that we will achieve the target,” the official said.

Working expenses have exceeded the budget projection for the April-July period -- the Railways incurred Rs 52,517.71 crore as ordinary working expenses against the target of Rs 50,487.36 crore. “Besides the working expenses, there are other expenditures which are causing operating ratio to exceed the target,” a senior Railway official told IANS. The pension liability, expenditure of Railway Board and railway institutions apart from the ordinary working expense which has far exceeding the total incomes during April-July 2018 resulting in operating ratio touching 111.51. All tribal hohos/ organisations expressed their solidarity for “One Government, One Tax” and the desire for an early settlement of the Naga political struggle. etisation, flawed implementation of Goods and Services Tax and tax terrorism,” he added. Chidambaram said: “The back series data is now available. The numbers prove the dictum that truth cannot be suppressed forever, and that the truth has a way of emerging amid a torrent of lies and distortions.” “Since this government came to power in May 2014, there has been a determined effort to run down the record of two UPA governments under Dr Manmohan Singh from 2004 to 2014,” he added. Quoting figures from Ministry of Statistics’ data, Chidambaram said that the Indian economy’s growth under NDA-I (A.B. Vajpayee) government was 5.68 per cent, it was 8.36 per cent during UPA-I, 7.68 per cent
for the global financial crisis in September 2008. “When the UPA government demitted office, economic growth had recovered to 6.39 per cent (at market prices) in 2013-14. Besides, the fiscal deficit had been reduced to 4.48 per cent and the current account deficit had been contained at 1.7 per cent.” Chidambaram said there were other reasons why the economy stumbled during Modi government, including stagnation in investment. “The peak Gross Fixed Capital Formation as per cent of GDP was 34.3 per cent in 2011-12. Even in 2013-14 it was 31.3 per cent. However, in the last three years, it has remained constant at 28.5 per cent. At that level of investment (GFCF), it is not possible to achieve higher growth rates. “Yet another reason is sluggish credit growth. In 2013-14, it was 14.0 per cent. The average of four years under the Modi government is 8.27 per cent.” Chidambaram said the Congress was a passionate advocate of high growth with equity and social justice. “All three have suffered under the Modi government,” he said.

in UPA-II and 7.33 per cent growth in NDA-II. “A lot of confusion was sown and the Modi government added to the confusion by changing the base year from 2004-05 to 2011-12,” the Congress leader added. Chidambaram said: “The Congress had repeatedly pointed out that when the base year was changed, the government should follow a healthy international practice and revise the numbers for the previous years too. “We had demanded that the back series data of Gross Value Added and GDP should be calculated and released so that meaningful comparisons can be made,” he added. He said that UPA-I and UPA-II delivered the highest decadal growth (8.13 per cent at factor cost) since independence. “It is also a matter of record that during this period, 140 million people were lifted out of poverty. The three best years were 200506, 2006-07 and 2007-08. Dr Arvind Subramanian called them the ‘boom years’,” the former Minister said. New Delhi, Aug 19 (IANS): Former Union Finance Minister P. Chidambaram on Sunday said that back series calculation of GDP proved that UPA I and II governments led by the Congress (2004-2014) delivered the highest decadal growth of 8.13 per cent since independence. He said that there was a determined effort by the present BJP-led government to run down the record of the Manmohan Singh government through distortions. The senior Congress leader said that the Modi government, in its fifth year in power, can’t match the average growth rate of UPA-I, but hoped that it could catch up with the average growth rate of the UPA-II regime. “For the sake of the country, we wish the government well in its fifth year,” he said at a press briefing here. He said that the government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi had inherited an economy that was on the upswing. “Unfortunately, after the first two years, the government stumbled and the momentum was lost. Over 2 million Muslims begin annual hajj pilgrimage MECCA, Saudi Arabia, Aug 19 (Agencies): More than 2 million Muslims began the annual hajj pilgrimage Sunday in Saudi Arabia, circling the cube-shaped Kaaba from first light in Mecca that Islam’s faithful face five times each day during their prayers, Fox News reported. The five-day hajj pilgrimage represents one of the world’s biggest gathering every year, a trip required of all able-bodied Muslims once in their life. The hajj offers pilgrims an opportunity to feel closer to God amid the Muslim world’s many challenges, including the threat of extremists in the Mideast after the Islamic State group was beaten back in Iraq and Syria and the plight of Myanmar’s Muslim Rohingya minority. “We are very blessed by Allah to be in this place, and we pray to Allah to make the Islamic nations
from the West to the East in a better situation,” said Essam-Eddin Afifi, a pilgrim from Egypt. “We pray for the Islamic nations to overcome their enemies.” The Kaaba represents the metaphorical house of God and the oneness of God. Muslims circle the Kaaba counter-clockwise seven times while reciting supplications to God, then walk between the two hills traveled by Hagar. Mecca’s Grand Mosque, the world’s largest, encompasses the Kaaba and the two hills. Before heading to Mecca, many pilgrims visit the city of Medina, where the Prophet Muhammad is buried and where he built his first mosque. Muslims believe the hajj retraces the footsteps of the Prophet Muhammad, as well as those of the prophets Ibrahim and Ismail — Abraham and Ishmael in the Bible. After prayers in Mecca, pilgrims will head to an
Pompeo to visit Islamabad for talks with PM Imran Khan Islamabad, Aug 19 (IANS): US Secretary of State Michael Pompeo is likely to visit Islamabad in September for consultations with Pakistan’s newly-elected Prime Minister Imran Khan and his team on issues of mutual interests, sources told Dawn news on Sunday. Pompeo, who is expected in Islamabad on September 5, will likely be the first foreign dignitary to meet Khan, who was sworn-in as Pakistan’s 22nd Prime Minister on Saturday. During his talks with Pakistani officials, Pompeo may focus on two major issues: efforts to revive once close ties between the two states and Pakistan’s support for a US-led move to jump-starting the Afghan peace process, the sources said. Alice Wells, who heads the Bureau for South Asian affairs at the State Department, may also accompany Pompeo. Earlier this week, US officials urged Pakistan to help end the Afghan war, adding that recent terrorist attacks in Afghanistan have not discouraged them from negotiating peace with some Taliban factions. On Saturday, the US State Department said that
it recognises and welcomes the new Pakistani Prime Minister, dispelling the impression that Washington was not happy with Khan’s election, reports Dawn news. In an earlier statement, a senior US official had hoped that the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf government would work with the US for translating tough issues into mutual achievements.
MESEBERG, Germany, Aug 19 (Agencies): Russian President Vladimir Putin and German Chancellor Angela Merkel discussed the conflicts in Ukraine and Syria, as well as Iran and a gas pipeline project that has drawn U.S. ire during tough talks outside Berlin that ended with no clearcut progress, Reuters reported. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters no agreements were reached, but the meeting had simply been intended to “check the watches” after Merkel’s meeting with Putin in the Black Sea resort of Sochi in May. T i e s b e t we e n t h e two countries have been strained since Russia’s annexation of the Crimea region of Ukraine in 2014. The two leaders both viewed the Nord Stream 2 pipeline project as a purely commercial venture, despite persistent fire by the U.S. and Ukrainian governments, Peskov said. “That’s why it is necessary to take measures against possible non-competitive and illegal attacks from the third countries in order to complete this project eventually,” he told reporters shortly before Pu-

area called Mount Arafat on Monday, where the Prophet Muhammad delivered his final sermon. From there, pilgrims will head to an area called Muzdalifa, picking up pebbles along the way for a symbolic stoning of the devil and a casting away of sins that takes place in the Mina valley for three days. At the hajj’s end, male pilgrims will shave their hair and women will cut a lock of hair in a sign of renewal for completing the pilgrimage. Around the world, Muslims will mark the end of hajj with a celebration called Eid al-Adha. The holiday, remembering Ibrahim’s willingness to sacrifice his son, sees Muslims slaughter sheep and cattle, distributing the meat to the poor. Maj. Gen. Mansour al-Turki, the spokesman of the Saudi Interior Ministry, told journalists Saturday that over 2 million Muslims from abroad and inside the kingdom would be taking part in this year’s hajj.
L o n d o n, Au g 1 9 (Agencies): The Indonesian island of Lombok has been shaken by another strong earthquake, after weeks of tremors that have killed more than 476 people, BBC reported. Sunday’s quake measured magnitude 6.3 and was at a depth of 7.9km (4.9 miles). It caused landslides but it is not known if there are any casualties. Residents said the tremor was felt strongly to the east of the island, and sent people fleeing into the streets. The biggest quake - of 6.9 magnitude - was on 5 August, and killed more than 460 people. It levelled homes, mosques and businesses, displacing hundreds of thousands of people, including many tourists. In the first in the series, on 29 July, a 6.4 magnitude quake trigged landslides in the mountain region of the island and killed at least 16 people.

tin flew back to Russia. It was not immediately clear what such “measures” could entail. At the start of the talks, Merkel underscored her expectation that Ukraine should continue to have a role in gas transit to Europe, and welcomed the start of discussions among the European Union, Ukraine and Russia on that issue. Putin, speaking at the German government’s Meseburg castle, said such a move had to make sense from a business perspective. “The main thing is that the Ukrainian transit – which is traditional for us - meets economic demands,” he said. “Nord Stream 2 is exclusively an economic project.” The United States is
Israel shuts Gaza crossing in response to border riot Jerusalem, Aug 19 (Agencies): Israel closed Sunday its only crossing for people with the Gaza Strip except for humanitarian cases after weekend border clashes, the latest tightening of its blockade on the Palestinian enclave despite truce efforts. The move could prevent Gazans from travelling via the crossing for this week’s Muslim holiday of Eid al-Adha, which runs from Monday night until Thursday night, but Israeli officials did not say how long the closure would last. Israeli Defence Minister Avigdor Lieberman said in a statement the closure was due to “violent incidents on the border last Friday”. The Palestinian Authority civilian affairs office in the Gaza Strip also confirmed the closure except for medical cases and Palestinians seeking to cross back into the enclave. Border protests and

clashes on Friday saw two Palestinians killed by Israeli gunfire. Israel’s army said firebombs and improvised explosive devices were also hurled at the border fence, while a number of Palestinians briefly crossed into Israeli territory. No Israelis were reported wounded. The closure and border incidents occurred despite attempts by Egypt and UN officials to reach a long-term truce between Israel and Hamas, the Islamist movement that runs the blockaded Gaza Strip. Israel has enforced an air, land and sea blockade on the Gaza Strip for more than a decade, but grants permission to a limited number of people to cross for
various reasons. The two sides have fought three wars since 2008. Israel had just last week reopened its only goods crossing with Gaza after closing it to most deliveries for more than a month over border tensions. Gaza’s only other border is with Egypt but the Rafah crossing with the enclave had largely been kept closed in recent years. Cairo opened it in mid-May and it has mostly remained so since. Separately on Sunday, US President Donald Trump’s national security adviser John Bolton arrived in Israel for talks with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at a time of shared concerns over Syria, Iran and the Gaza Strip.

pressing Berlin to halt the pipeline that will carry gas from Russia under the Baltic Sea, arguing it will increase Germany’s dependence on Russia for energy. Ukraine fears the pipeline will allow Russia to cut it off from the gas transit business, while Germany’s eastern European neighbours worry about Russian encroachment. Peskov said the threat of possible U.S. sanctions against companies involved in the project was not discussed on Saturday. Standing beside Putin before the talks, Merkel said both countries - but especially Russia as a permanent member of the U.N. Security Council - had a responsibility to try to
solve the ongoing fighting in Ukraine and Syria. She said she also planned to raise potentially thorny human rights issues with Putin, and discuss bilateral relations. “I am of the opinion that controversial issues can only be addressed in dialogue and through dialogue,” she said. Both leaders raised concerns about Syria and the plight of the many refugees created by the sevenyear-old war there. Merkel said it was important to avert a humanitarian crisis in Idlib, Syria and the surrounding region, and said she and Putin had already discussed the issue of constitutional reforms and possible elections when they last met in Sochi in May. Putin told reporters that everything must be done to help Syrian refugees to return to their country and that Syria needed assistance to rebuild. The two leaders took no questions. On Ukraine, Merkel said she hoped fresh efforts could be undertaken at the beginning of the new school year to disentangle Ukrainian military forces and separatists on the front lines in the Donbass region.

banking relations will return on November 5. Europe has vowed to keep providing Iran with the economic benefits it received from the nuclear deal, but many of its bigger companies have already pulled out of the country for fear of US penalties. “Iran can respond to Europe’s political will when it is accompanied by practical measures,” said Zarif. “Europeans say the JCPOA (nuclear deal) is a security achievement for them. Naturally each country must invest and pay the price for its security. We must see them paying this price in the coming months.”

Vatican City, Aug 19 (IANS): Pope Francis on Sunday called for solidarity and help from the international community for people affected by flooding in the southern Indian state of Kerala which has caused widespread death and destruction. The Pope said during the weekly Sunday prayers on St. Peter’s Square that residents of Kerala had been hit by intense rains in recent days, which had led to flooding, landslides and an enormous loss of life, reports Efe news. He said the Catholic Church was working to bring help to the people of Kerala and urged those gathered in the Vatican square to pray for those who had died and all the people affected by the calamity. Francis urged the international community to stand in solidarity with India and to offer concrete help to those affected by the floods.

Iran said on Saturday it would resist the pressures of U.S. sanctions by relying on its natural and human resources, as Washington pushes allies to cut economic ties with Tehran, Reuters reported. “It is a critical moment for our economy, but we are not in a dead end,” Vice President Eshagh Jahangiri was quoted as saying by the state news agency IRNA. “This country has plenty of human and natural resources that can rely on.” “The size of our oil and gas resources is number one in the world. In minerals and metals we are among the top 10 countries,” Jahangiri said. Washington has withdrawn from a deal that had lifted sanctions on Tehran in return for curbs on its nuclear programme. Sanctions imposed in August target Iran’s trade in gold and other precious metals, its purchases of U.S. dollars and its car industry.

Lo n d o n, Au g 1 9 (Agencies): Iran’s Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said Sunday that Europe had not yet shown it was willing to “pay the price” of defying Washington in order to save the nuclear deal, AFP reported. Zarif said European governments had put forward proposals to maintain oil and banking ties with Iran after the second phase of US sanctions return in November. But he told Iran’s Young Journalist Club website that these measures were more “a statement of their position than practical measures”. “Although they have moved forward, we believe that Europe is not yet ready to pay the price (of truly defying the US),” Zarif said. US President Donald Trump pulled out of the 2015 nuclear deal in May, and began reimposing sanctions earlier this month that block other countries from trading with Iran. ruce Willis and Demi Moore have reunited to celebrate their daughter Rumer’s 30th birthday. The former Hollywood couple, who have been separated since 2000, came together for their daughter’s 30th birthday celebration on Thursday. The proud parents were also joined by their youngest daughters, Scout and Tallulah Willis. The birthday festivities were well-documented on social media and kicked off with lunch for the new 30year-old. Both Rumer and Tallulah shared Instagram photos and stories from the afternoon bash. Tallulah shared what appeared to be a photobooth photo from the celebration featuring both of her parents striking funny poses. And instead of writing out a caption, the young star placed the family emoji in the caption spot. According to People, the 24-year-old also shared a video on her account of the family singing “Happy Birthday” to Rumer. In the since-deleted video, the sisters sang the traditional song to the birthday girl before chanting, “We hope you come back sober!” The Willis sisters even shared some bikini-clad photobooth pictures from the afternoon celebration. The Hollywood family continued the festivities into the evening where Willis joined his three daughters for dinner. Scout shared a photo from the evening birthday dinner with the caption, “Just before we took this photo my dad said, “hurry up, I have to fart.” Back in July, Willis and his ex-wife reunited for Comedy Central’s “Roast of Bruce Willis.” Moore, who was married to the “Die Hard” star from 1987 to 2000, happily joked about her former husband and poked fun at his parenting skills and his iconic film series. his significant influence in producing all of the Beatles albums. In the biog raphy, Womack also argues that the reasons behind the “freezing out” were twofold, blaming the uncertainty caused by Brian Epstein – the manager of the Beatles – death the previous year and an ar-
ticle in Time magazine which credited Martin as the mastermind behind the Beatles’ seminal album, ‘Sgt. Peppers.’ Womack said: “It… had a lot to do with a Time magazine article in 1967 where George was credited with being this wunderkind and the mastermind behind ‘Sgt Pepper’. They didn’t take very well to that and let him know…I do think this was the beginning of the struggle over ‘who’s the genius behind the Beatles?’” He added: “This was payback for taking credit for the Beatles myth…but they coaxed him back for ‘Abbey Road’.” Womack’s account features in Sound Pictures: The Life of Beatles Producer George Martin, the Later Years, 1966-2016 and is released on 4 September. Be there for each other: Ariana on Manchester attack
S
inger Ariana Grande says she is battling with anxiety, more than a year after 22 people were killed in a terrorist attack following her concert in Manchester, England. During a sit-down interview with Ebro Darden on Apple’s Beats 1 Radio Friday, Grande was overcome with emotion - crying over the pain she carries in the wake of Manchester, reports variety.com. The topic came up when Darden mentioned “Get Well Soon”, the Sweetener track that addresses the tragedy. “It’s just about being there for each other and helping each other through scary times and anxiety”, Grande, 25, said of the song as tears started welling in her eyes. “You know, there is some dark s*** out there, man. And we just have to be there for each other as much as we can. Because you never f***ing know, you know. So I wanted to do something to make people feel good and less alone,” she added. Grande found herself at the centre of tragedy on May 22 last year when an improvised explosive device
was detonated outside her concert at the Manchester Arena, killing 23 people and injuring 250. Grande went on to explain that the Manchester attack changed her perspective on life. “We see this on the news. (And) you feel bad, you tweet (about) it, you post a picture, you send your condolences, you say something and then you move on... (But) people are
permanently affected by this s***,” said Grande. “Perspective, it changes everything. It changes your life quite a bit,” she said. “I really want to be present, and follow happy impulses, and figure that out later. You want to just stay in the moment. You try not to give into fear because obviously that is the whole point of being here.” (IANS)

India 124/2 at stumps; lead Eng by 292 runs Johnson retires from all forms of cricket
Nottingham, Aug 19 (Agencies): Hardik Pandya took his maiden five-wicket haul as India moved in a commanding position in the third Test at Trent Bridge. India were 124/2 at stumps with Cheteshwar Pujara and Virat Kohli on unbeaten 33 and 8 respectively. India now lead by 292 runs as they look to bounce back after losing the first two Tests in the five-match series. KL Rahul (36) and Shikhar Dhawan (44) were the only two Indian wickets to fall in the second innings. While Rahul was bowled out by Ben Stokes, Dhawan fell to leg-spinner Adil Rashid. India began the day on 307/6 but lost their final four wickets for 22 runs in 40 minutes as Jimmy Anderson and Stuart Broad bowled superbly to lay down the template for an astonishing afternoon. In reply, England were bowled out for 161 after they lost all 10 wickets in the second session, conceding a first innings deficit
Sinquefield Cup: Anand holds Hikaru Nakmura ST. LOUIS, Aug 19 (PTI): Five-time world champion Viswanathan Anand got off to a good start holding USA’s Hikaru Nakmura to an easy draw in the first round of the Sinquefield Cup, a part of the Grand Chess tour, in St. Louis. After a rather forgettable outing in the rapid and blitz event where he finished last, Anand did not give any chance to Nakamura out of a Queen’s gambit declined. The pieces changed hands at regular intervals as Anand equalised with a typical central breakthrough in the middle game and the players arrived at a drawn queen and pawns endgame in quick time where the peace was a just result. S h a k h r i ya r M a m edyarov of Azerbaijan got off to a flier cruising past Wesley So of the US. In the other decisive game of the day, Levon Aronian of Armenia came up with a brilliant endgame show to beat Sergey Karjakin of Russia.

Chievo Verona’s Filip Djordjevic fights for the ball with Juventus’ Cristiano Ronaldo during a Serie A match on Saturday.
V e ro na , Au g 1 9 (Agencies): Cristiano Ronaldo was unable to find the net as the Serie A champions fought back to win 3-2 against Chievo in Verona. Sami Khedira, Ronaldo’s former team-mate at Real Madrid, got the visitors off to the perfect start (3) before Mariusz Stepinski nodded in an equaliser on the half-hour
mark. Emanuele Giaccherini gave Chievo the lead from the penalty spot in the 56th minute, but an own goal from Mattia Bani (75) left the tie finely poised heading into the final quarter of the game. Juventus thought they got the winner in the 86th minute, but Mario Mandzukic’s header was ruled out by VAR as Ronaldo’s
handball beforehand saw the goal chalked off. Moments later and Juventus did get their third through substitute Federico Bernardeschi who slotted in from close range (90+3). Massimiliano Allegri’s men took an early lead as Khedira latched onto Giorgio Chiellini’s flicked-on header from a corner and fired in at the near post.
Joao Cancelo missed a glorious chance on his league debut in the ninth minute. The 24-year-old right-back scuffed his shot from only three yards out wide while getting outmuscled. And it wasn’t until the half-hour mark when Ronaldo had his first real sight on goal. The five-time Ballon d’Or winner met a long ball over the top before he lashed his volley over. Against the run of play, Chievo found their equaliser eight minutes from half-time. Stepinski took advantage of some sloppy marking to reach Giaccherini’s cross and neatly steered his header into the top corner. Two minutes into the second half and Ronaldo sent a fierce drive towards goal, forcing Stefano Sorrentino to parry his powerful effort away, but it didn’t take long before Chievo took the lead from the spot. Cancelo tripped up Giaccherini in the box before the former Sunderland winger slotted his
penalty into the bottom left corner. The introduction of Mario Mandzukic in the 64th minute saw Ronaldo move to the left flank and he came agonisingly close to scoring as his dipping strike forced Sorrentino to get a strong hand to it. The 33-year-old came even nearer to his debut goal moments later. Paulo Dybala sent him through but his poked effort was deflected onto the roof of the net. Juventus got their equaliser in the 75th minute with Bani heading into his own net before a period of controversy. Juventus thought they’d regained the lead through Mandzukic in the 86th minute but the referee, after consulting VAR, ruled it out for a Ronaldo handball in the build-up. In the 89th minute, Juventus got their winner as Alex Sandro’s drilled cross was slotted in by Bernardeschi to mark a chaotic end to Ronaldo’s league debut.

Kane relieved to end drought
L o n d o n, Au g 1 9 ( Ag e n c i e s ) : H a r r y Kane says he is relieved to have scored his first Premier League goal in August and now it is time to “move on”. Kane ended an extraordinary run of over 1,000 minutes without scoring in the month by getting Tottenham’s third goal in the 3-1 win over Fulham at Wembley. The England captain, who scored told 52 goals in 59 games last season, said he was pleased to get off the mark so quickly this campaign. “Yeah, it’s always nice, as a striker you want to score in every game so whenever you’ve got something like this on your back you just want to get it off and score and move on,” he said. “Thankfully I scored and we won which is the most important thing and now we’ve got a big game next Monday night [against Manchester United].”

Ben Stokes soon followed for 10, caught by Rahul off Mohammed Shami, before Pandya accounted for Jonny Bairstow (15), Chris Woakes (8) and Adil Rashid (5) in quick succession. The last two were both caught behind by keeper Rishabh Pant, who marked an impressive debut by taking five catches. Jos Buttler raised the biggest home cheer of the afternoon by scoring a streaky run to avoid the follow on. Asian Games: Bajrang wins first gold for India Man City thrash Huddersfield 6-1
Bajrang Punia carries the tricolour after winning in the Finals of men's freestyle wrestling (65kg) against Japan's Daichi Takatani at the Asian Games on Sunday. (PTI)
Ja k a rta , Au g 1 9 (PTI): A dominating Bajrang Punia opened India’s gold medal account at the Asian Games, bringing smiles and relief to the Indian camp which was jolted by the early exit of star wrestler Sushil Kumar here today. An in-form Bajrang won his maiden Asian Games gold in the 65kg category but a ‘rusty’ Sushil lost his last chance to add an Asiad gold to his collection of medals after losing his qualification bout 3-5 to Bahrain’s Adam Batirov in the 74kg category. Bajrang came into the Games after winning three tournaments- Commonwealth Games, Tbilisi Grand Prix and Yasar Dogu International - and carried on with his superlative show here. Such was his domina-
tion that the 24-year-old from Haryana won all his bouts, till the final, by technical superiority. He outclassed Uzbekistan’s Sirojiddin Khasanov
(13-3), Tajikistan’s Fayziev Abdulqosim (12-2) and Mongolia’s N Batmagnai Batchuluu (10-0) to storm into the gold medal bout. In the final, he was
tested by Japan’s Takatani Daichi but Bajrang held his nerves to prevail 11-8 in an exciting battle. He raced to a 6-0 lead but the Japanese kept at it and put Bajrang under immense pressure. Bajrang emulated his mentor Yogeshwar Dutt, who won gold in the last edition, and is now one of the few Asiad gold medal winners in wrestling. Kartar Singh (1978, 1986), Satpal Singh (1982), Rajinder Singh (1978), Changdi Ram (1970) and Maruti Mane (1962) are among Asiad gold winners from India. A lot was expected from all five wrestlers in action Sunday but Sandeep Tomar (57kg), Mausam Khatri (97kg) and Pawan Kumar (86kg) faded out early. Pawan got a chance to redeem his campaign but lost his repechage round by technical superiority (0-11) to local boy Fahriansyah. T h e b i g ge s t b l ow
though came when twotime Olympic medallist Sushil, who was exempted from Asiad trails, lost tamely. Sushil, winner of a bronze at the 2006 Doha edition, was competing at the Games after skipping the last two editions. The Indian led 2-1 after the first period with a take down but the Bahraini made a strong comeback to silence the Indian fans. For Sushil to remain in the medal contention, Batirov needed to make the final. But the Bahraini lost his quarterfinal bout 2-8 to Japan’s Yuhi Fujinami, resulting to Sushil’s exit. S a n d e e p To m a r, who was the last wrestler to book a berth for the Games through trials, showed immense promise before crashing out in the quarterfinals. He won his second round 12-8 against Turkmenistan’s Rustem Nazarov but was outwitted 9-15 by Iran’s Reza Atrinagharchi.
Ravi, Apurvi win bronze in 10m mixed air rifle India opened its account in the 18th Asian Games with Ravi Kumar and Apurvi Chandela winning the bronze medal in the 10m mixed air rifle event here on Sunday. The duo of Kumar and Chandela finished third on the podium with a score of 429.9. Chinese Taipei claimed gold with 494.1 with a Games record while China bagged silver with 492.5. Kumar and Chandela entered the final as the second-best team with 835.3. However, Manu Bhak-
Apurvi Chandela and Ravi Kumar er and Abhishek Verma failed to qualify for the final of 10m mixed air pistol event. It was a maiden Asian Games medal for Chandela,
who will be aiming for a better colour medal in the 10m air rifle. Chandela is also a multiple time World Cup winner and had bagged gold at 2014 Commonwealth
Games in Glasgow. Chandela, having won the first Games medal for the country, was satisfied with her performance. There was disappointment in store for pistol mixed team of teen sensation Manu Bhaker and Abhishek Verma, who failed to qualify for the finals after being tied with Kazakhstan. Both teams were tied at 759 points after 80 shots but the Kazakh sealed the fifth and final qualifying spot with more inners 10s than India (25 to India’s 14).
Aguero caught Hamer off his line to make it 1-0 for Manchester City on Sunday.
Lo n d o n, Au g 1 9 ( Ag e n c i e s ) : S e r g i o Aguero registered his 13th hat-trick for Manchester City as the reigning PL champions showed they were not missing Kevin De Bruyne in a 6-1 thrashing of Huddersfield Town. Aguero got City’s first, third and fifth goals, while Gabriel Jesus and David Silva, on his 250th Premier League appearance, also beat Huddersfield goalkeeper Ben Hamer. Terence Kongolo’s own goal capped a convincing City victory which was only slightly spoiled by Jon Stankovic’s effort for the visitors just before half-time. The 25th-minute opener came from Ederson’s 70yard goal-kick as he spotted Aguero in a one-on-one situation, and City’s all-time scorer stayed cool to chip past Ben Hamer. Jesus added a second six minutes later following good work from Benjamin Mendy and when the Frenchman delivered a cross that Hamer fumbled, Aguero accepted the gift to score City’s third. Huddersfield pulled one back prior to the break as Stankovic capitalised when Steve Mounie flicked
on a long throw. Yet the three-goal lead was restored within three minutes of the restart when Silva bent a beautiful freekick into the top-right corner as Hamer stood motionless. Aguero completed his hat-trick as he flicked in Mendy’s glorious delivery 15 minutes from time. The striker was taken off straight after that but his replacement Leroy Sane was involved in City’s final goal when his attempt was saved by Hamer but went in off the unsuspecting Kongolo. Meanwhile, a devastating first-half blitz from Brighton secured a memorable 3-2 victory over Manchester United on Sunday. Two goals in two minutes from Glenn Murray and Shane Duffy put Brighton two up inside 27 minutes. Romelu Lukaku halved the deficit on 34 minutes with a close-range header but there was no respite for the beleaguered United defence as Pascal Gross won and converted a penalty on the stroke of half-time to put Brighton in control. Paul Pogba scored a penalty in stoppage-time but it came too late to inspire a comeback.
Chelsea beat Arsenal
Chelsea beat Arsenal 3-2 in a pulsating London derby on Saturday with defender Marcos Alonso scoring an 81st-minute winner after the Gunners had fought back from an early 2-0 deficit. Chelsea went ahead in the ninth minute when Pedro buried a cross by Alonso. Out-of-form striker Alvaro Morata scored only his second league goal of 2018, fed by a through ball from Cesar Azpilicueta 11 minutes later. Arsenal clawed their way back into the game in the 37th minute when Henrikh Mkhitaryan drilled in a low shot that Kepa Arrizabalaga will have been disappointed to have let in. Alex Iwobi made it 2-2 four minutes later as Arsenal exploited Chelsea’s vulnerability on the flanks. In a tighter second half, neither side could carve out as many chances but Alonso settled the game when Belgium winger Eden Hazard, on as a substitute, carved open the Arsenal defence for the Spanish defender to finish in Sarri’s first home game in charge.

Hazard coy over future plans Lo n d o n, Au g 1 9 (Agencies): Eden Hazard insists he is happy at Chelsea for the time being but refused to commit his long-term future to the club. Real Madrid and Barcelona were interested in signing Hazard this summer after the Belgium international admitted “it might be time to try something different.” Hazard says he intends to stay at Chelsea for the season but was coy over his future prospects. “Everybody knows what I have said after the World Cup,” the 27-year-old said. “...A lot has been said, but at the moment I’m happy. I have two years left on my contract and we’ll see what happens. Leaving this year? I won’t go.” “The transfer market in England is closed. Clubs can still sell players, but not sign new ones anymore. It would be a bit strange that they would sell me now while they can’t sign a replacement. Today we have seen that the fans quite like me. I’m good where I am now. Let’s see what happens in one or two years.” Printed, Published and Edited by Geoffrey Yaden at G.M. Printers, Circular Rd. Dimapur-797112.
