NEW DELHI, AUG 20 (PTI): Parliamentary standing committee on Information Technology has summoned Facebook on September 2 to discuss the issue of alleged misuse of social media platforms in the wake of claims that the US firm did not apply hatespeech rules to certain BJP politicians. A day before, the panel will also discuss the issue of internet shutdowns and has called representatives of the Jammu and Kashmir administration and others. Besides representatives of Facebook, the committee has asked representatives of the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology to remain present on September 2 to discuss on the subject of “safeguarding citizens’ rights and prevention of misuse of social/online news media platforms including special emphasis

The agenda of the committee’s September 2 meeting states that to “hear the views of the representatives of Facebook on the subject ‘Safeguarding citizens’ rights and prevention of misuse of social/online news media platforms including special emphasis on women security in the digital space.” No immediate response was available from the social media firm on the summon. The notification issued by Lok Sabha Secretariat came on a day when senior member of the committee and BJP leader Nishikant Dubey wrote to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla seeking removal of Shashi Tharoor as the panel’s chairman, alleging that the Congress leader was using the platform for a political agenda. For the September 1

meeting, representatives of the ministries of communications and home affairs have also been called as well as those from Bihar, Jammu and Kashmir and Delhi governments, according to the agenda notifications issued by the Lok Sabha Secretariat. Information and Broadcasting Ministry, News Broadcasters Association, Press Council of India and Prasar Bharati representatives have also been called for the discussion on ‘Ethical Standards in Media Coverage’ on September 1. The political slugfest has been going on between the two, which started after Tharoor’s announcement that the panel would like to hear from Facebook about the report published in Wall Street Journal claiming that the social media platform ignored applying its hatespeech rules to politicians of the BJP.

India to have 12% rise in cancer cases by 2025: Report Poor internet service affect e-classes

DIMAPUR/New Delhi, AUG 20 (NPN/AGENCIES): National Cancer Registry Programme Report 2020, released by The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and National Centre for Disease Informatics & Research (NCDIR), Bengaluru, has estimated a 12% rise in cancer cases in India in next five years. According to the report there will be about 13.9 lakhs cancer cases in 2020 which is likely to increase to 15.7 lakhs by 2025, based on current trends. The estimates are based on information related to cancer collected from 28 Population Based Cancer Registries (PBCRs). Additionally, 58 Hospital Based Cancer Registries (HBCRs) provided cancer data. In 2020, tobacco related cancers are estimated to contribute 3.7 lakhs (27.1%) of the total cancer burden. Among women, breast can-

cers are estimated to contribute 2.0 lakhs (14.8%) and cervix cancer are estimated to contribute 0.75 lakhs (5.4%), whereas for both men and women, cancers of the gastrointestinal tract is estimated to contribute 2.7 lakhs (19.7%) of the total cancer burden, according to the report. As far as the distribution of cancer cases is concerned, the cancer incidence rate for male population ranges from 269.4 in Aizawl district (highest in India) to 39.5 in Osmanabad and Beed district per 1,00,000 population, according to the report. Similarly, the cancer incidence rate for women population ranges from 219.8 (Papumpare district) to 49.4 (Osmanabad & Beed district) per 100,000 population, the report said. When the cases were looked at gender wise, the cancers related to use of

any form of tobacco were highest in the North eastern region of the country and in higher proportions in men. Also, Cancer of lung, mouth, stomach and oesophagus were the most common cancers among men. When it came to disease burden in women, the Cancer of breast and cervix uteri were found to be the most common cancers. “A significant increase in the incidence rates of breast cancers in women, and lung and head and neck cancers in both men and women was observed in most of the registries, however, a declining trend was seen in most of the registries for cancer of the cervix,” the report said. “Cancers of lung were diagnosed at a stage of spread to distant sites, while cancers of head and neck, stomach, breast and cervix were in higher proportions with loco-regional spread,”

the report said. According to Chief Executive Officer of ICMR, Dr Ravi Mehrotra: “Emphasis to be given to making cancer a notifiable disease to enable increase coverage by registries and establishment of registries in areas hitherto uncovered regions to get a more comprehensive national picture.” “This will help in better cancer screening, early detection, referral, treatment and palliative care services throughout the country. Sikkim was the only state to actually show a decrease in cancer prevalence for both genders, reflecting their good public health system and aware population,” he said adding people living in NE have more than double the chances of developing Cancer compared to other regions. He said this underlines the regions of the country which require focused attention.

D I M A P U R , AU G 2 0 (NPN): Amid the COVID19 pandemic and most educational institutions shifting to online classes across the State, students are facing problems due to poor internet connectivity. The very objective of conducting online classes, which is to ensure continuity of studies by the student community, seems to have been defeated as many students and even teachers have complained about poor internet connectivity.

Although internet connectivity across India seems to be improving and expected to get better with even talks now for 5G network, internet connectivity in Nagaland remains abysmal. Some of the Students in Dimapur informed Nagaland Post that online classes were usually conducted from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., but most of them complained that they did not get proper wi-fi or broadband connection. “Internet services providers are speaking of coming up with 5G connectivity in Nagaland, when even 3G

or 4G connectivity they provide is awful. They should first provide their 3G or 4G connectivity properly before even talking about 5G in Nagaland,” a student remarked. A high school teacher, who wished to stay anonymous, questioned why the State government was silent on the poor internet services in Nagaland. The teacher said that she has never been able to hold proper classes due to network issues. “As teachers, we feel sad for some students as not everyone has the luxury to access wi-fi or broadband connection. So, some of us teachers are sending students recorded voice messages over WhatsApp or other sharing apps. However, this does not serve much purpose unlike the real-time online class, which is also interactive,” another teacher remarked. K Y M C

Mnp CM likely to consult Shah on reshuffle

Correspondent

IMPHAL, AUG 20: Manipur chief minister N Biren Singh is likely to take a final decision on reshuffle of his ministry after a meeting with Union home minister Amit Shah, a highly reliable source here said on Thursday. Singh along with 6 MLAs who resigned from Congress and camping in New Delhi since August 16, are awaiting for an appointment with the Union home minister currently undergoing medical treatment at AIIMS hospital. The sources said that Singh has sought an appointment with the ailing Union home minister who is reportedly working from the hospital. The chief minister will consult on his proposal of ministry shuffle with the Union home minister. Whether the proposed ministry reshuffle will take

N Biren Singh place or not will depend on the response of the Union home minister, the source said. Sources said that the chief minister intends on affecting a reshuffle of his council of ministers and to drop at least five incumbent cabinet ministers, including two from his own party BJP and induct new faces. There were political talks of inducting two of the six ex-legislators who had joined BJP after they

resigned from as members of the state Assembly and the Congress recently. Mention may be made that five of the six ex-legislators have formally joined the BJP at a simple function held at BJP national office at New Delhi yesterday (August 19) in the presence of party’s national vice president Baijayant Panda, general secretary Ram Madhav and chief minister N Biren Singh himself. The sixth ex-legislator, Md Abdul Nasir is yet to

join the party even though he was a part of the chief minister’s team. A source here said that Nasir is unlikely to join the saffron party and likely to contest the by-election as independent candidate or another party supporting the BJP as per wishes of his close associates and workers. Meanwhile, one the state BJP’s influential leaders and works minister Th Biswajit and state unit president of the party Prof S Tiken are currently camping at the national capital after they were reportedly invited by party Central leaders for talks on state political situation. They left Imphal for New Delhi on Wednesday and were reportedly camping separately. On the other hand, opposition Congress today termed the induction of six of its legislators who had resigned into the BJP as

betrayal of people of their respective constituencies. “People of Manipur will not forgive them (the six former Congress legislators) for their “selfish act”, said president of Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) M Okendro. Talking to media persons in Imphal today, the MPCC president alleged that four of the six ex-legislators had already joined the BJP in 2017 before they resigned as members of the state Assembly and asked the motive behind joining the party (BJP) again. On ex-legislator Abdul Nasir not joining the BJP, Okendro questioned “Why was he not allowed to join the BJP. Is it because he is a Muslim?” He said that people of the state hate political defection in the state on the initiation of the BJP and defectors will be taught a lesson in the coming byelection.

Intl footballer, scribe among locally transmitted COVID cases in Manipur Correspondent IMPHAL, AUG 20: An international footballer and one journalist tested positive for COVID in Manipur even as the tally rose closer to the 5000-mark on Thursday. Official sources said that footballer Boris Thangjam, a team member of India’s 2017 FIFA U-17 World Cup tested positive for COVID-19 on Thursday. The 20-year-old footballer who had played as right back in two of India’s three matches in the U-17 World Cup which the country hosted in 2017 was the first among the renowned footballers from the state who tested positive for virus and third among the international level sportspersons infected by the virus after international boxers Ng Dinku and L Sarita Devi. According to a family

source, Boris, a resident of Imphal’s Thangmeiband locality was tested positive leaving for Bangalore to join a training camp for Indian Super League. He has been in Imphal since he returned from Goa in April this year. He has no recent travel history except going to the local ground to train. Meanwhile, a scribe working in the news section of a local TV network also tested positive on Thursday. Following the positive test result, All Manipur Working Journalists’ Union (AMWJU) today stressed the need for its members to be careful while discharging their duties. The Union appealed to scribes to strictly follow the advisory repeatedly circulated by AMWJU among its members while urging publishers and editors to cooperate with the union

as scribes followed the advisory while discharging their duties. Including the footballer and scribe, Manipur registered 49 COVID cases (25 males and 15 females) in the past 24 hours (till 5pm of August 20). An official report of the COVID-19 Common Control Room showed nine out of 49 new cases were personnel of the Central security forces while the remaining 40 were locals without any significant travel history. With the fresh cases, the state’s COVID-19 tally rose to 4925 comprising of 1286 Central Armed Police Force (CAPF) personnel. After discharge of 70 CAPF personnel upon recovery on Thursday, the recovered cases increased to 3002 which included 410 CAPF personnel. The recovery rate stood at 60.95%, the control room stated.

With the fresh cases, including 77 security personnel, the state’s COVID19 tally has increased to 1,661. The state government has also decided to close all entry points to Meghalaya for one week every month from September to November to unburden frontline workers. “G over nm ent ha s decided to close all entry points to #Meghalaya for 1 week every month in the next 3 months starting Sept 2020. This is being done to unburden our health, frontline workers, and

the respective District Administration engaged in intensive surveillance for #Covid_19,” Chief Minister Conrad Sangma posted on his social media platforms. East Khasi Hills district, where the state capital is located, reported 106 fresh cases, 12 in West Garo Hills, six in Ri-Bhoi and one each in East Garo Hills and West Jaintia Hills, Health Services director Aman War said. Meghalaya currently has 925 active COVID-19 cases, he said. Five patients have recovered from the disease till Thursday increasing the tally of recovered persons to 730, War said, adding that 6 person have died so far. The state has also conducted tests on 45,151 persons till date, he said.

Agartala, Aug 20 (PTI): At least 130 people of Phuldungsei, a remote Mizo inhabited village in North Tripura district bordering Mizoram, have their names in the electoral roll of the neighbouring state, an official said. Phuldungsei is part of a cluster of villages on Jampui hills of Tripura. Sub-divisional Magistrate (SDM) of Kanchanpur, Chandni Chandran in a letter to North Tripura District Magistrate said on careful scrutiny of part 37 of Hacchek ST constituency of Mizoram it was found that names of 130 people of Phuldungsei village have been added to Hacchek ST constituency of Mizoram. The SDM further said in the letter dated August 17 that Phuldungsei village council “has been added as part of Hacchek constituency of Mizoram

as Zampui Phuldungsei.” The letter made available to media said, 130 voters, whose names figured in the electoral roll of Mizoram are residents of Tripura and their names also figure in the electoral rolls of Tripura and also in the Register of Residency (ROR) of Phuldungsei Village Council and they avail ration from Phuldungsei Ration shop under Kanchanpur Sub- division. “Currently, the PWD road leading to Kawnpui border village of Jampui hill RD block is regarded as the boundary between Tripura and Mizoram in Phuldungsei where the Eastern side belongs to Mizoram and the western side is Tripura. Traditional Phuldungsei VC as a whole (despite eastern side falling in Mizoram) has been accepted as a part of Tripura,” the letter said.

The SDM in his letter said, “There is an urgent need to demarcate the exact boundary between Mizoram and Tripura incorporating the entire Phuldungsei VC in Tripura. Tripuras royal scion Pradyot Kishore Manikya Debbarma two days back had said that reports of Tripura’s territories being taken away by a neighbouring state (Mizoram) has to be dealt with firmly. “I have spoken to CM @BjpBiplab and the SDM Kanchanpur that reports of our territories being taken away by a neighbouring state has to be dealt with firmly. This report confirms it. We demand immediate response from the govt in this matter. Tripura boundaries are non negotiable,” Debbaram had tweeted. Debbarma is the chief of the Indigenous Progres-

sive Regional Alliance (TIPRA). He is also a former president of Tripura Pradesh Congress Committee. He demanded an immediate response from the government of Tripura, in this matter. Debbarma said, “Tripura boundaries are not negotiable and to those who were shouting against us I want to ask you one question, why are you silent when our state boundaries are redrawn? Als,o where are the indigenous political leaders and their position on this issue or are they only there to shout before elections? Speak up for this is our state ... speak out as one”. Officials posted in Kanchanpur sub-division said, “People of the eastern side of Phuldungsei have a double ration card and double voter ID cards also.”

Agartala, Aug 20 (PTI): The Tripura Police has seized a huge cache of Yaba tablets and brown sugar, valued at Rs 1 crore, cash and mobile phones, in two separate operations in the city, a senior officer said on Thursday. Three people were detained during the raids, he said. Acting on a tip-off, a joint team of local police officers, personnel from the state’s anti-narcotic unit and the intelligence department detained one person near Jackson gate area here on Wednesday night, and recovered Yaba tablets sealed in packets from his possession. Later, the sleuths raided his house at Shantipara here and seized more contraband items and cash. “After detaining the person, we conducted a search at his residence

at Shantipara and seized 52,000 Yaba tablets (mixture of methamphetamine and caffeine), brown sugar, Rs 13.86 lakh in cash and some documents,” Superintendent of Police, anti-narcotic department, R Saraswati, said here. eghalaya has been witnessing slow but gradual rise in COVID cases with 1506 confirmed cases as on August 20,2020. The first COVID case on March 22 and by April, six more were recorded as confirmed. COVID-19 cases showed marginal rise with 14 cases in May but it more than tripled to 45 in June. By July COVID-19 cases jumped over 16 times to 738 and this had set alarm bells ringing. So far, the government of Meghalaya had been quite proud, about the few numbers as compared with other states(except Sikkim). By August 20,2020 the number had more than doubled at 1598 COVID-19 cases. It was a big blow on the complacency that existed in the state, particularly its ruling politicians. With cases rising and on August 19, the Director Meghalaya health department(MI) Dr.Aman War hinted that Shillong was heading towards community spread of COVID-19. The state’s minister of health and family welfare Alexander Laloo Hek also expressed concern about the situation terming it “not good”. Hek said random testing was being undertaken to check the spread in the state and would continue when deemed necessary. A community transmission takes place when the virus spreads in such a way that the source of its infection is not known. One can catch an infection from other people- at work or while out shopping- and from people who “probably don’t think” they have it. Despite recording only 1598 COVID-19 cases, Meghalaya’s health department is alarmed. This stems from reports that in several cases, that those infected could not identify the source of infection. Even in Assam, it may be recalled that on July 6,2020 Assam health minister Dr.Himanta Biswa Sarma had said that Assam’s main city of Guwahati has entered a “real pandemic phase” with community transmission being witnessed. In just eleven days, the coronavirus positive cases in the Kamrup (Metro) district jumped to 2,741 from a mere 63, he pointed out. Even in Manipur, where the COVID-19 tally is 4876, Manipur Legislative Assembly Speaker Y Khemchand Singh had earlier claimed that there was a community transmission of Covid-19 in Manipur. Though the Manipur health department has not officially admitted it, yet the department has gone on war footing on contact tracing as there were some reports of people getting infected without travel history or known sources of contact. In sharp contrast, Nagaland recorded sharp spike in COVID-19 cases. From ‘Nil’ in April, to three from May 25(through returnees), then 460 in June(multiplying by around 150 times), and thrice the number to 1692 in July and now more than double as on August 20 with 3583 cases. Yet the state health authorities steadfastly refuse even to entertain the view that the virus is being spread through local community transmission, despite several who were infected not having travel history nor infection from known sources. The denialmode is probably a strategy adopted from the Centre and defying the very interpretation of community transmission despite mounting evidence. Some leading experts like former director AIIMS Dr MC Mishra, virologist Shahid Jameel, lung surgeon Dr Arvind Kumar and epidemiologist Dr Jayaprakash Muliyil have reiterated that the virus was spreading among population groups and localities that have little to do with travel or contact with travellers. Officials in Assam, Meghalaya and Manipur are considering it for the sake and safety of their people and not denying it for the image or prestige of their governments.

DailyDevotion Christ-Awareness …and I will give you rest. —Matthew 11:28 Whenever anything begins to disintegrate your life with Jesus Christ, turn to Him at once, asking Him to re-establish your rest. Never allow anything to remain in your life that is causing the unrest. Think of every detail of your life that is causing the disintegration as something to fight against, not as something you should allow to remain. Ask the Lord to put awareness of Himself in you, and your selfawareness will disappear. Then He will be your all in all. Beware of allowing your self-awareness to continue, because slowly but surely it will awaken selfpity, and self-pity is satanic. Don’t allow yourself to say, “Well, they have just misunderstood me, and this is something over which they should be apologizing to me; I’m sure I must have this cleared up with them already.” Learn to leave others alone regarding this. Simply ask the Lord to give you Christ-awareness, and He will steady you until your completeness in Him is absolute. A complete life is the life of a child. When I am fully conscious of my awareness of Christ, there is something wrong. It is the sick person who really knows what health is. A child of God is not aware of the will of God because he is the will of God. When we have deviated even slightly from the will of God, we begin to ask, “Lord, what is your will?” A child of God never prays to be made aware of the fact that God answers prayer, because he is so restfully certain that God always answers prayer. If we try to overcome our self-awareness through any of our own commonsense methods, we will only serve to strengthen our self-awareness tremendously. Jesus says, “Come to Me…and I will give you rest,” that is, Christ-awareness will take the place of selfawareness. Wherever Jesus comes He establishes rest— the rest of the completion of activity in our lives that is never aware of itself.

Post-mortem

Zeliangrong CSOs react to NSCN (I-M) Nagaland Football: Evolution or Revolution? T

N

agaland Football has fallen to such a terrible condition and to return to main stream we either need evolution or revolution. I honour the past players who has done tremendous amount of real Football for Nagaland and that’s how the passion and legacy flows in till today and overwhelming sight of Football wherever we go in Nagaland is because of big contribution from the past players and their achievements. However the present generation should stop living in the past glory and start implementing proper policies and plans every year from the beginning of the year. I wish to see the calendar year of Football in Nagaland ie the plans, the project, the tournaments, the policy or step to achieve in each calendar season because at the present context, our Football has reached to such a limit where we need revolution to revive it but living in Christian state and amongst the peace loving citizen the word revolution sometime doesn’t sound good so I say Nagaland Football need Evolution to get to the top and rekindle the past glory. And when I say Evolution, I m not sidelining the past glory but we need a new whole kind of new seeds and plants to regrow so that the cycle of life continues instead of getting withered. We need a whole new fresh concept otherwise we have to continue living in the past glory which sounds so good yet not lightning the future dark passage. And when I articulate, I always mention Nagaland Football Association and State Government (it should not be taken on

N

the preparation. Nagaland state need at least two division of League to upgrade players from D category till Top A category. And not only that when we have 2-3 division leagues in state, all the club will try to reach the top division making it more competitive and the best will come out of this and the weaker one be relegate. As of now since we don’t have strong stability ground and strong club to qualify or bid for I-League hence NFA with assistance from State Government need to build one Corporate Club to provide platform to our talented players. And by Evolution I want to state that we need Professionalism to evolve a whole new kind of Football to bring present glory so that the past glory stay intact and our achievement today pave the way for better tomorrow. We need to bring in so much Professional in Nagaland Football that we become the powerhouse of Football. At present juncture we are only passion driven but once we bring Professionalism on the desk then all the clubs and players will become so professional that Football will become the biggest industry in Nagaland. Looking towards the better days of Football after COVID-19. It will be unfair on my part if I end my article without acknowledging Nagaland Football Association and our State Government for they have done commendable job for Football so far but I have to say that there was lack of Professionalism and lack of Evolution. AB Bajpayee, Mr. H.D. Gowda, Mr. IK. Gujral, Mr. Manmohan Singh and Mr. Narendra Modi. The people have also seen many Interlocutors namely Mr. Swaraj Kaushal, Mr. K. PadmanaBhaiah, Mr. RS. Pandey and Mr RN Ravi. The observation of the people is that there has been tremendous and tangible progress of the Indo-Naga political negotiation under the leadership of Mr. Narendra Modi, the Hon’ble Prime Minister of India and the dynamic Interlocutor, Mr. RN. Ravi for Indo-Naga political negotiation with the signing of Framework Agreement with the NSCN (IM) and the Preamble or Agreed Position with the WC of NNPGs to facilitate an honourable settlement of the Indo-Naga political issue. Mr. RN. Ravi, in the capacity of an Interlocutor, Government of India has been working for the unity of Naga people and its inclusiveness so that long lasting honourable and workable solution is achieved. Because of this observation and ground reality, the civil organizations want Mr. RN. Ravi to continue as the Interlocutor of the Indo-Naga political negotiation for arriving at an early settlement without any further delay. While engaging in political negotiation with the Government of India for political settlement, the NSCN (IM) should refrain from issuing warning or intimidation to any individual or civil organizations who are representing the voice, interest and sentiment of the people. Such intimidation under the barrel of guns is outdated and not acceptable in this modern era. If any untoward incident happens to ZCO leaders or individuals from Zeliangrong community, the NSCN (IM) would be held responsible. The Government of India should also not allow the NSCN (IM) to issue such threat or intimidation under the garb of Indo-Naga peaceful political negotiation. For any untoward incident or negative consequences that may arise, the onus shall also be with the Government of India for not taking necessary actions on time. Can Nagas’ rights be bartered or negotiated?

aga people are struggling nation to be free from the clutches of other nations. Pre-India-independent, Nagas were resisting foreign invading forces and post independent with India till date. Let us reason and analyse what is wrong in the current Indo-Naga Political talk. Let us know for ourselves to stand firm on our principle of eternal Truth and universal human Rights. Human Rights are inherent rights of every human person to be recognized, respected and protected by every nation. It is wrong and tyranny to violate or ignore the rights and interest of any nation. Exploitation of rights is violation of natural rights of humanity. Nagas’ Rights to self-determination is humanly Right and is universal reality. The case of Nagas is not a revolution or secessionist movement against India as many of the Naga UGs thought it to be. It is a Resistance Movement against all exploitative invading and occupational forces perpetrating in Na-

negative terms) because these two has the authority to make the big decision of Football. Evolution in my own terms is here, Nagaland Football need grassroot level in the first place without which we won’t have future star and they need to be mould from the age of 7 years onwards, just imagine the game of this boy by the time he reach 17 years provided that we have done our proper homework in this 10 years of rigorous training and coaching. By Evolution I mean Nagaland Football need to go out and start showcasing our talent not keeping the selection bias. Nagaland Football Association with the help of State Government need to have one Corporate Club and any player qualify to play for this club need to have class A category and in order to play in this club all the players need to toil and sweat to climb the ladder from the class D category. If this kind of Corporate Club exist and manage by NFA and support by Nagaland State Government then the club should bid for I-League under Corporate tender bidding system. Once we start playing I-League our players will be in limelight and get scouted for ISL which comprises of highest player from Northeast Region unfortunately not Nagaland. And maybe my only dream but if we win I-League we qualify for Indian Super League and ultimately to India squad. Winning world cup for India is distant dream as of now but how proud it will be for Nagaland if we can see our player help our country to qualify for World cup but these dreams is foil if the authority does not improvise and start

he Zeliangrong Civil Organizations ZCOs (Zeliangrong Baudi, Zeliangrong Youth Front and All Zeliangrong Students’ Union) strongly deplored the NSCN (IM) warning and intimidation which appeared in some newspapers two days ago tagging “any organization or individual falling in line with RN. Ravi is anti-Naga”. Every Naga has the unquestionable right to express their opinions and views that cannot be gagged or intimidated by anybody as far as the Naga political issue is concerned. Therefore, issuing such warning and intimidation by NSCN (IM) under the barrel of guns is a violation of the human rights and condemnable by every citizen. NSCN (IM) warning to Naga civil organizations and individuals falling in line with RN. Ravi while on the other hand talking with the Government of India represented by Mr. RN. Ravi as the Interlocutor for achieving early solution is quite paradoxical. Naga political issue cannot be considered as neither one man’s property nor is it an issue which can be claimed as their own by any particular group or some sections of the people. Nagas irrespective of regions or tribes have been involved, participated and contributed at their level best to sustain the movement and have suffered enough at the altar of Naga political movement. Therefore, the general public are now yearning for peace and early solution following the peace talk which has been dragging on for more than 23 years. It is the inescapable obligation of every concern individual or civil organizations who are representing the interest and sentiment of the people to ventilate the voice of the people. Issuing warning or intimidation to civil organizations or individuals for ventilating the voice of the people is suppressing the voice of the people which will not yield any positive result rather they will give rise to louder voices, protest and discontentment of the people. During the course of more than two decades long Indo-Naga political negotiations, the people have seen many Prime Ministers of India namely; Mr. Narasimha Rao, Mr.

gas’ country. Nagas’ case is of Excluded Areas between India and Burma after British India. In the words of Nehru uttered on 19th August 1946; “The tribal areas are defined as being those long frontiers of India which are neither part of India nor Burma, nor of Indian states nor of any foreign power”. When the British India pass the India Independent Act in 1947, the then British Prime Minister Clement Attlee announced that; “The princely states would be free from orders and treaties of British India. They can either join the two dominions (India or Burma) or stay separate.” The Nagas have every right to be a free Nation like any free nations of the world and as India. As much as India would like to be freed from British occupation in India is the aspiration of the Nagas to live in freedom in their homeland. No force union or coerce agreement can make any solution to any conflict. The world knows well that Nagas are not Indian and that Indian is making Nagas and their

land as part of India. This is the case and conflict of the so called Indo-Naga political issues. India is trying to fuse or melt the Nagas into Indian by process of melting politics. Iron and clay cannot be mixed and melted into one metal or clay. The current Nagas’ political scenario in the state of Nagaland is contentious and clouded with confusions. It is because Nagas are worn out and their hope to fight on for their freedom grows weary and fainted. Further observed, that the Nagas’ case has been twisted and distorted in an attempt to suit to the politic of India. It is also viewed that the Nagas’ vision and goal have been made blurred and blind folded by the seemingly better or making a turn to look toward economic packages and greater positions offered by India to the Nagas, that has made the Nagas to think over it to be a realistic possibility. Here, the Nagas’ vision and gaol is forfeited. Nagas are now teeming to conform to Indian’s solution for the Nagas rather

than pursuing the Nagas’ aspiration and their right to self determination. It is when Nagas must decide to persist on lest Nagas would perish or cease to exist as Nagas. Indian offers economic packages to purchase the Nagas and their rights over their land to be Indian’s in the form of negotiation. Here lies for Nagas to give in or give up India’s offers. But what remains clear is that, Nagas’ Right are non-Negotiable or cannot be bartered for any amount of material gain. It is inherent human rights. Rights cannot be wronged or wrong righted. Right and wrong are two opposite poles. It is instinctive reality or inalienable human entity to live in their rights. Some few Nagas are thinking that the present realistic possibility is to accept Indian solution for Nagas; forfeiting the Nagas’ freedom from India occupational politic. The Naga Peoples’ Movement for defending and building Naga Nationhood is the birth right and human rights that should not be given out for any

cost or gain that will accurse the Nagas generations. The Present negotiation with the GOI on Nagas’ Case is tending to compromise the Nagas’ sovereign rights with the GOI as if Nagas’ world will come to an end with the Indo-Naga talk if objected. The Nagas must seek an alternative approach rather than ceasefire talk conditioned upon Nagas while India are freely operating and detecting the Nagas free movement in their land. Negotiation on Naga flag and constitution and on the other hand a ready position to accept India’s solution for Nagas is the circumstances created by Indian Politics. In the event of giving up Naga Identity for the sake of concluding the Indo-Naga political settlement and for cessation of Indian military operation in Nagaland, Nagas will forever lose their right to be a free racial people on earth. Accepting the offer of economic packages or current position of India towards the Nagas’ solution in exchange of giving

We were discussing about our works when I asked him if the youths were enforcing “community policing” in their vicinity. His reply was, “Why would we want to waste our time doing that? Most of them are busy selling meat and vegetables”. In my mind, that was uncalled for and it left me motivated. Tremendous! Of the entire narrow minded crowd, at least there are some ingenious minds was what I thought. This can also be the solution to a percentile of unemployment rate in our state. I have no issue with the decision of enforcing such acts by any colony or organizations. However, from

my personal experiences, some of them require “ethics and mannerism” classes. Their way of approaching people alone will make anyone infuriated because respect is of essence in our society. If you respect a person regardless of the age, they will also respect and honor the service you do. Also, the problem with community policing is that, the volunteers are poorly equipped. The only thing they have is a mask (while some don’t even wear one), a long bamboo or a cane stick and that is it. No hand sanitizers, no gloves, no thermal scanners and above all no social distancing. Whom do you think will be infected? And the naïve part is that, a handful of them are there for their own benefits. They are there to

frisk those that are smuggling illegal contraband like drugs and alcohol. If they are lucky, it is yet another treat! Again, these are some instances of incidents happening in some parts of our state and it is not intended to accuse or hurt the very sentiments of anyone. Kudos! To those that are maintaining proper precautionary and preventive measures while keeping a check on both the exits and entries of their vicinities. As mentioned in the aforementioned lines, employing oneself and earning rather than whining about unemployment must be regarded and supported by all. We must realize that because of the Pandemic millions of people are being scrapped out from their own companies and organizations. The whole world

is suffering and we must realize that we constitute a part of the sufferings. Therefore, make use of the ideas and creativity that you have. Now is the right time to do the necessary because we are of no essence to time. If we are shy of doing the menial tasks, there is no success awaiting our arrival on the other end. Away with your social and family status, regardless of the size of your house or vehicle, pick the shovel and start shoveling if success begins with it. Help yourself and try to build an empire off of your own blood, sweat and tears because when time overruns us, there is nothing but an eternity of doom, and regrets and remorse would just be, but words after all. The current climate of the Indo-Naga Political negotiation must make a way for a new turn or be kept for better or alternate approach to finding a better and mutual solution. I appeal to all Naga national leaders to look beyond our generation and strive on harder with greater patience and hope to save and safeguard the Nagas’ sovereign identity, Rights and hard earned history of Nagas’ struggle from snatching away by other from our hands. In case, apology is submitted, the case to be posted for consideration on the same, on August 25,” the bench said in the order. The apex court, on August 14, had held Bhushan guilty of criminal contempt for his two derogatory tweets against the judiciary saying they cannot be said to be a fair criticism of the functioning of the judiciary made in the public interest. He faces simple imprisonment of up to six months or with a fine of up to Rs 2,000 or with both as punishment. “We can give you time and it is better if you (Bhushan) reconsider it. Think over it. We will give you twothree days’ time,” the bench told Bhushan, who held his

ground by refusing to apologise for the tweets. “I did not tweet in a fit of absence mindedness. It would be insincere and contemptuous on my part to offer an apology for the tweets that expressed what was and continues to be my bona fide belief,” he said. The activist lawyer however said he will think over the suggestion of the bench, also comprising Justices B R Gavai and Krishna Murari, which posted the matter again on August 25. The bench said that it can be very lenient if there is realisation of mistake. Few minutes after the start of the crucial hearing, Bhushan, represented by senior advocates Rajeev Dhavan and Dushyant Dave, also addressed the bench and quoted Mahatma Gandhi. “I do not ask for mercy. I do not appeal to magnanimity. I am here, therefore,

He has been hospitalised for the past ten days and is on ventilator support following a brain surgery. The hospital authorities said, “The respiratory parameters of Hon’ble Shri Pranab Mukherjee have shown slight improvement though he continues to be on ventilator support.” The authorities also stated that his vital and clinical parameters remain stable and are being closely monitored by a team of specialists. On Wednesday, the authorities had stated that the former President’s health condition had deteriorated.

Dubey and Tharoor have filed breach of privilege notices against each other on Wednesday after a spat on social media over the Congress leader’s remarks on summmoning the Facebook India executives over reports that the social media giant went soft on some BJP leaders who had made hate speeches ahead of the general elections last year. While Dubey said Tharoor was treating the committee as an extension of Congress party, the Congress leader had alleged that the BJP MP made “disparaging remarks” on social media over his decision to summon a panel meeting to discuss the alleged “misconduct” of Facebook.

Space sector reforms not aimed at privatising ISRO: K Sivan BENGALURU, AUG 20 (PTI): The recently announced space sector reforms are not aimed at privatisation of Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), its Chairman and Secretary in the Department of Space, K Sivan asserted on Thursday. The space agency also stated that the draft on the proposed space activity bill is almost final and it will soon be placed before the Union Cabinet for approval. “When space sector reforms were announced by the government there were many misconceptions like it would lead to privatisation of ISRO. It is not. Again and again I’m repeating it is not the privatisation of ISRO,” Sivan said. Addressing a webinar on “Unlocking of India’s Potential in Space Sector,” he said the whole aim of reforms is enabling the private players

to carry out the space activities which is otherwise being done by ISRO. “In fact, the activities of ISRO are going to increase and ISRO will be able to better utilise its resources in taking up developmental as well as capacity building activities of the government, rather than the routine production activity,” he added. The Union Cabinet on June 24 approved participation of the private sector in the entire range of space activities, including planetary exploration missions. It had said, the newly-created Indian National Space Promotion and Authorisation Centre (IN-SPACe) will provide a level playing field for private companies to use Indian space infrastructure, by hand-holding industries in space activities through encouraging policies and a friendly regulatory environment.

in which there are farmers, labourers, small shop owners and millions of poor people,” he said. “Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been attacking the unorganised economy for the last six years. He did this because this sector has money and Modi ji wanted to transfer it to big businessmen,” Gandhi alleged. “Wherever there is a Congress government (in the states), we work to balance the unorganised and organised economies. The unorganised economy acts as a shock absorber in adverse situations. “If the country’s unorganised economy is secured and strong, it can absorb any kind of shock and cope with difficult situations. Our mother and sister keep money at their home, because it

works as a shock absorber,” he added. “Farmers, labourers, small and medium business have been decimated as a result of demonetisation and extremely complex GST decisions by the Centre,” the Congress leader alleged. “The first attack on the unorganised economy was the decision of demonetisation by PM Modi. He made people deposit their hard-earned money in the banks and then with that money he waived loans of 10-15 businessmen friends and crony capitalists. Then he imposed the wrong GST that led to collapse of small and medium businesses and farmers,” he said. Slamming the Centre over the handling of the coronavirus situation, Gandhi said, “Modi ji suddenly implemented lockdown without any prior notice. Why did he suddenly do this? There was a thinking behind it which was to target our unorganised sector.” “Ninety per cent of employment is generated by the unorganised economy in the country. Modi ji destroyed this system...One by one companies will fall and small and medium businesses will collapse, which has already been started.

RAIPUR, AUG 20 (PTI): Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Thursday accused the Narendra Modi government of decimating the unorganised economy, comprising farmers, labourers and small businesses, in the last six years of its rule, and said that the country will not be able to generate jobs in the coming period as a result of that. Addressing via video conferencing the foundation stone-laying ceremony of the party’s offices to be built in 22 districts headquarters of Chhattisgarh, he said that although the unorganised economy generates 90 per cent of the country’s employment, the Modi government destroyed it through various moves like demonetisation and implementation of “wrong GST”. Gandhi stressed the need to restore the balance between the organised and unorganised economies for the welfare of the country. The event was organised on the occasion of the birth anniversary of former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi. “India has two kinds of economies. One is an organised economy, wherein there are big companies, while the other one is unorganised economy,

This is my first such order,” Justice Mishra said. At the outset, the bench was told by Dave that the court should defer the hearing on quantum of sentence till Bhushan’s plea, which is to be filed, seeking review of the August 14 judgement is decided or as alternative, the case be transferred to some other bench. Dismissing the submissions of deferment or the transfer, the bench said, “You (Dave) are asking us to commit an act of impropriety by saying that the arguments on sentencing should be heard by other bench... Has it been ever done that the hearing on sentencing has been undertaken by the other bench when the main bench is existing”. The bench however said: “I can assure you that the if we inflict any punishment on you it will not be acted upon till review is decided.” It also rejected the plea of adjournment and said the review can be decided only after the present hearing concludes. The bench said it will hear arguments on sentencing and was not inclined to hear the plea filed by Bhushan on Wednesday seeking deferment of hearing on sentence till his review petition is decided.

New Delhi, Aug 20 (PTI): Stepping up his attack against parliamentary panel on information technology chairman Shashi Tharoor, BJP MP and a member of the panel Nishikant Dubey on Thursday wrote a letter to the Lok Sabha Speaker requesting him to remove the Congress leader from the post. Citing the Lok Sabha rules, Dubey requested Speaker Om Birla to appoint any other member as the chairman of the committee in his place. Taking a dig at Tharoor, Dubey alleged,”speaking in ‘Spenserian’ English with a foreign accent does not give freedom to an individual to not only disregard our glorious parliamentary institutions/ organs to meet his own political ambitions but also to abuse our constitution.” Ever since Tharoor has become the panel head, “he is running the affairs of the committee in a thoroughly unprofessional manner and to serve his political agenda of spreading rumours and defaming my party,” Dubey said in the letter. “..it would be highly improper for Dr. Shashi Tharoor to continue and regulate the proceedings of the committee. I, therefore, appeal to your good self to persuade Dr. Tharoor

to cheerfully submit to any penalty that can lawfully be inflicted upon me for what the Court has determined to be an offence, and what appears to me to be the highest duty of a citizen,” he said. Attorney General K K Venugopal, who is assisting the bench, joined many legal luminaries and urged the court not to award any punishment to Bhushan in the contempt case saying he has already been convicted. “The tone, tenor and content of Bhushan’s statement makes it worse; is it defence or aggravation,” the bench told Venugopal and made clear that it cannot consider his request unless Bhushan reconsiders his earlier stand of not apologising for his tweets. Justice Mishra, who is retiring on September 2, said that he never punished any person for contempt in his entire career as a judge and this was his first such judgement. The regret and realization of the offence should come from within, he said. “There is a ‘lakshman rekha’ for everything. Why cross it. We welcome pursuing good cases in public interest but remember, it is now after conviction. And it is a serious thing. I have not convicted anyone of contempt in 24 years as a judge.

NEW DELHI, AUG 20 (PTI): The Supreme Court Thursday granted time till August 24 to activist-lawyer Prashant Bhushan to reconsider his “defiant statement” refusing to apologise and tender “unconditional apology” for contemptuous tweets against the judiciary and rejected his submission that quantum of punishment be decided by another bench. The top court, while reserving its verdict on the quantum of sentence to be awarded to Bhushan in the case, also rejected his submission seeking deferment of the hearing till his yet-tobe-filed review plea against its verdict, which held him guilty of contempt of the court, is decided. A bench headed by Justice Arun Mishra said it may now hear the matter on August 25 for considering the “unconditional apology” if filed by Bhushan. Reminding Bhushan of ‘lakshman rekha’, the top court asked as to why it has been crossed and observed that it has been asked to commit an act of “impropriety” by sending the case to some other bench for hearing the arguments on quantum of sentence in the contempt case. “Arguments have been heard in the main matter, on

India and China agree to resolve outstanding issues expeditiously: MEA NEW DELHI, AUG 20 (PTI): India and China on Thursday agreed to resolve outstanding issues in an “expeditious manner” and in accordance with the existing agreements and protocols, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said after the two sides held a fresh round of diplomatic talks to resolve the border standoff in eastern Ladakh. MEA Spokesperson Anurag Srivastava said the two sides had a “candid and in-depth” exchange of views on the existing situation on the Line of Actual Control (LAC), and reaffirmed to sincerely work towards complete disengagement of the troops in the western sector. The virtual talks were held under the framework of the Working Mechanism for Consultation and Coordination (WMCC) on border affairs. “The two sides had a candid and in-depth exchange of views on the existing situation in the India-China border areas,”

Srivastava said at an online media briefing. “They reaffirmed that in accordance with the agreements reached between the two foreign ministers and the two Special Representatives, the two sides will continue to sincerely work towards complete disengagement of the troops along the Line of Actual Control in the western sector.” Srivastava further said: “In this context, they agreed to resolve the outstanding issues in an expeditious manner and in accordance with the existing agreements and protocols.” External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar had held a telephonic conversation with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi on June 17 during which both sides agreed that the overall situation would be handled in a responsible manner. The formal process of disengagement of troops began a day after Doval-Wang parleys. Both Doval and Wang are Special Represen-

tatives for boundary talks. Referring to the outcome of Thursday’s talks, Srivastava said the two sides were in agreement that restoration of peace and tranquillity in the border areas would be essential for the overall development of bilateral relations. “The two sides further acknowledged the need to maintain close communication through both the diplomatic and military channels so as to ensure complete disengagement. In this regard, they also agreed to continue their ongoing engagements including through the meetings of the WMCC,” he added. The Indian delegation at the 18th meeting of the WMCC on border affairs was led by Naveen Srivastava, Joint Secretary (East Asia) in the External Affairs Ministry while the Chinese side was headed by Hong Liang, Director General of the Boundary and Oceanic Department of the China’s Foreign Ministry.

Army junta takes over Mali BAMAKO (MALI), AUG 20 (AP): A colonel in Mali’s army says he’s now in charge of the West African country, declaring himself chairman of the junta that forced the democratically elected but unpopular president to resign. Col. Assimi Goita, one of the five military officers who announced this week’s coup on the state broadcaster ORTM, declared himself chairman of the junta now in power. “By making this intervention (the coup), we have put Mali first,” Goita said in a broadcast that showed him meeting with the top officials of government ministries and urging them to resume work Thursday. “Mali is in a sociopolitical and security crisis,” he said. “There is no more r o o m f o r m i s t a k e s. ” Across Africa and around the world, leaders have strongly condemned this week’s coup, calling for an immediate return to civilian rule and the release of ex-President Ibrahim Boubacar Keita and his prime minister, Boubou Cisse. The two leaders were detained by mutinous soldiers on Tuesday who surrounded the president’s private residence in Bamako and fired shots into the air. Under duress, Keita later announced his resignation on state television, saying he did not want any blood to be shed to keep him in power. Analysts have said there were few signs that

Colonel Assimi Goita

political opposition leaders were aware of the coup plot in advance, though they now stand to benefit through an opportunity to serve in the transitional government promised by the junta. The opposition, known as the M5-RFP, announced it would hold a rally Friday in Bamako “to pay tribute to the Malian people for their heroic struggle.” “The M5-RFP calls on ECOWAS, the African Union and the international community as a whole, to better understand the situation in Mali separate from the issue of sanctions and to support the Malian people in their quest for peace, national reconciliation, true democracy and better living,” the opposition said in a statement. Observers fear the political upheaval will allow Islamic extremists in Mali to expand their reach.

A power vacuum after a previous coup in 2012 allowed al-Qaida-linked militants to take over major towns in northern Mali where they implemented their strict interpretation of Islamic law. Former colonizer France, which maintains strong economic and political ties to Mali, later led a military intervention to oust them from power in 2013. But those jihadists have since regrouped and launched relentless attacks on the Malian military, as well as U.N. peacekeepers and regional forces trying to stabilise the volatile country. The extremists have moved southward, inflaming tensions between ethnic groups in central Mali. “The fight against terrorist groups is inseparable from the defense of democracy and the rule of law,” French President Em-

manuel Macron tweeted late Wednesday. “To separate them would be to provoke instability and weaken our fight. That is not acceptable.” Goita, the new strongman, had been head of a special military unit based in central Mali. He also had taken part in the annual Flintlock training organised by the U.S. military to help Mali and other Sahel countries better fight extremists. Keita won the 2013 election in a landslide, emerging from a field of more than two dozen candidates to get more than 77 per cent of the vote. He won re-election five years later, but his political fortunes have tumbled in the past year. While Mali’s Islamic insurgency started before Keita took office, many felt his government did not do enough to end the violence. The extremists only expanded their reach, infiltrating the central part of the country where they inflamed tensions between ethnic groups. Attacks have dramatically increased over the past year. Opposition to Keita’s government rose further after legislative elections earlier this year that dozens of candidates disputed. In a conciliatory gesture, Keita said he was open to holding the vote again in contested areas. But by June, demonstrators were taking to the streets en masse calling for his ouster.

Russian oppn leader allegedly poisoned

Alexei Navalny

M os c ow, A ug 2 0 (IANS): Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny was unconscious in a hospital after suffering from suspected poisoning, his spokeswoman said on Thursday. Kira Yarmysh, the press secretary for the AntiCorruption Foundation, which Navalny founded in 2011, tweeted: “This morning Navalny was returning to Moscow from Tomsk. During the flight, he felt ill. The plane made an urgent landing in Omsk. Alexei has toxic poisoning.” “We suspect that Alexei was poisoned by something mixed into (his) tea. It was the only thing he drank since morning. “Doctors are saying that the toxic agent absorbed faster through the hot liquid. Right now Alexei is unconscious.” Yarmysh later tweeted that Navalny, the 44-year-old staunch critic of President Vladimir Putin, was on a ventilator and in a coma, and that the Omsk Emergency Hospital was now full of police officers, the BBC reported. She said doctors were initially ready to share any information but were now saying the toxicology tests were delayed and were “clearly playing for time, and not saying what they know”.

The demonstration on Wednesday took place in front of the headquarters of the UN Relief and Work Agency for Palestine Refugees, reports Xinhua news agency. The demonstrators marched toward the Ansar square, waving Palestinian flags and carrying banners. Different factions, including President Mahmoud Abbas’ Fatah party, Islamic Hamas movement, Islamic Jihad movement and the leftist groups, joined the mass rally. Ahmed Helles, a member of Fatah’s Central Committee, said that “the Palestinians’ stance is unified,” adding that “we will confront all attempts aiming to

Pakistan minister threatens India with nuclear war NEW DELHI, AUG 20 (AGENCIES): Pakistan’s controversial federal minister Sheikh Rasheed has threatened India with a nuclear war, reports India Today. Sheikh Rasheed, the federal railways minister in the Imran Khan government is considered to be the voice of Pakistan’s notorious counter intelligence agency - the ISI -- in the government. In an interview to a television channel Sheikh Rasheed admitted that the Indian Army is far superior to the Pakistan Army in conventional warfare. Therefore, Pakistan is working on miniaturised nuclear weapons. He boasted about Pakistan having very small, very accurate and perfect atom bombs to target India all the way up to Assam, but “in a way that Muslims would be spared”. This is not the first time that Sheikh Rasheed has threatened India with tactical nuclear weapons. In September 2019, he boasted about Pakistan having nuclear weapons as small as 125250 grams that will destroy only a targeted area. K

Trump reacts to Obama’s rare rebuke WASHINGTON, AUG 20 (PTI): As Barack Obama tore into US President Donald Trump at the Democratic National Convention, his successor hit back with a barrage of angry tweets, saying the former president spied on his campaign and got caught. Trump went live with his tweeting as Obama and Indian-origin Senator Kamala Harris delivered their speeches at the 2020 Democratic National Convention on Wednesday. “HE SPIED ON MY CAMPAIGN, AND GOT CAUGHT!” Trump said in an all-cap tweet. Trump was referring to the charges that his campaign was being spied on in 2016. As Obama asked Americans to vote for Joe Biden, the presidential nominee of the Democratic Party, Trump fired another tweet in caps. “WHY DID HE REFUSE TO ENDORSE SLOW JOE UNTIL IT WAS ALL OVER, AND EVEN THEN WAS VERY LATE? WHY DID HE TRY TO GET HIM NOT TO RUN?” he asked. Obama stayed out of the 2020 primary race and did not endorse until the race was all but over. Tr ump continued with his tweets as Harris was delivering her acceptance speech. “BUT DIDN’T SHE C A L L H I M A R AC IST??? DIDN’T SHE SAY HE WAS INCOMPETENT???” the president said, referring to the criti-

cism by Harris of Biden during the primaries. At the start of the third day of the convention, Trump welcomed Obama and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton to the election campaign. “Welcome, Barack and Crooked Hillary. See you on the field of battle!” he tweeted. The president also directed his ire at former first lady Michelle Obama after she took the virtual stage on Monday and accused her of being “over her head” after she encouraged Americans to vote him out of office. Trump has repeatedly accused Obama of spying on his 2016 campaign. Attorney General William Barr told Congress last year he believed “spying” did take place during a probe into Russian meddling. Obama launched a

scathing attack on his predecessor in his convention speech, saying: “Donald Trump hasn’t grown into the job because he can’t.” “For close to four years now, he’s shown no interest in putting in the work; no interest in finding common ground; no interest in using the awesome power of his office to help anyone but himself and his friends; no interest in treating the presidency as anything but one more reality show that he can use to get the attention he craves,” he said. Obama’s remarks, live from at the Museum of the American Revolution in Philadelphia, were unusual and even unprecedented in their criticism of a presidential successor. Obama also used the speech to lay out the case for Biden and his running mate Harris.

Bayern through to Champions League final

Players of Bayern Munich and Olympique Lyonnais fight for the ball during their Champions League semi match.

L I S B O N, Au g 2 0 (Agencies): Bayer n Munich powered into the Champions League final, where they will face Paris St Germain, as two goals from Serge Gnabry led them to an emphatic 3-0 win over Olympique Lyonnais on Wednesday. Bayern will bid for their sixth European Cup triumph when they come up against Neymar and Kylian Mbappe on Sunday and after convincingly

beating Chelsea, Barcelona and now Lyon, Hansi Flick’s side will surely start as favourites. The Germans are unbeaten in 2020, winning 24 of 25 matches in all competitions and they have won every Champions League game this season. No team has ever won the Champions League with a 100 percent record but while Bayern will fancy their chances, PSG’s powerful attack should make

Don’t break COVID-19 protocols, BCCI warn players

New Delhi, Aug 20 (IANS): The coronavirus cases in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) are increasing rapidly - according to the latest report - making the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) a little worried about the cricketers, who are reaching the gulf nation for this year’s IPL. The UAE is scheduled to host the 13th edition of the Indian Premier League from September 19 and two teams -- Kings XI Punjab and Rajasthan Royals -have already reached Dubai. Other teams will also be reaching in a couple of days. A senior BCCI official told IANS that all the players and IPL team owners have been told to take care of themselves. “Strict instructions have been given to all the players, coaching staff, owners and other members.

We don’t want that because of someone’s mistake, others get infected and suffer,” the official said. “UAE will provide all the help needed regarding safety of players (medical or other). The teams’ owners have also been asked not to roam here and there freely because coronavirus cases are no less in that nation. After so many delays, the IPL is going to happen and everybody will have to respect it and be more responsible,” he said. Last month, England fast bowler Jofra Archer was dropped from the playing XI for the second Test against West Indies after it was learned that he had broken the team’s bio-secure protocol. The IPL 13 will be played across three venues in Abu Dhabi, Dubai and Sharjah till November 10.

for an entertaining contest. “Paris are a good team. For now we celebrate a little bit but afterwards we focus on the next game,” said Bayern’s Canadian left back Alphonso Davies. “It’s going to be a good game, there’s going to be goals in it. This is what you dream of as a footballer – playing against the best in Europe. And we’re able to do that, I’m excited,” he added. PSG will take hope

Liverpool to begin PL title defence against Leeds

L ondon, Au g 2 0 (Agencies): Liverpool will begin defending their Premier League title on September 12 at Anfield, according to a fixture list for the new season, when they play newly promoted Leeds United, who return to England’s top-flight for the first time in 16 years. Manchester City and Manchester United will not participate on the opening weekend after they were guaranteed 30 days of rest following the end of their European seasons. City were due to open their season against Aston Villa and United against Burnley but those games have been moved. United will now kick off the season at home to Crystal Palace on Sept. 19, according to the fixture list released by the league on Thursday, and City will travel to Wolverhampton Wanderers for their opener on the same day. Mikel Arteta will begin his first full season in charge of Arsenal with a trip to newly promoted Fulham on September 12, while north London rivals Tottenham Hotspur host Everton.

from the early chances that Lyon created — Memphis Depay found space behind the Bayern defence but, forced wide, he could only shoot into the side-netting. Lyon, who upset Juventus and Manchester City in the previous rounds, had warmed up on the field before the game with rarely-seen intensity and it showed as they took the game to Bayern and they went close again in the 17th minute. Powerful striker

Karl Toko Ekambi found space in the Bayern box and should have done better after his first shot was blocked and his follow-up effort struck the post. But moments later Bayern grabbed the lead – a clever ball from Joshua Kimmich found Gnabry who danced in from the right and unleashed an unstoppable shot, from over 20 metres out, into the top corner. Gnabry went close again with a snap-shot that Lyon keeper Anthony Lopes did well to keep out as Bayern pushed hard for a second. It came in the 33rd minute - and was started and finished by Gnabry. The former Arsenal midfielder fed Ivan Perisic on the left and the Croatian’s low cross found Robert Lewandowski at the back post. His weak shot was saved by Lopes, only for the alert Gnabry to pounce and convert his ninth goal in nine Champions League games. Lewandowski, looking well below his usual levels of sharpness, had another good chance after the interval, but he again made it too easy for Lopes, leaving Lyon still with hope. Moussa Dembele, the two-goal hero in the quarter-final win over Manchester City, came on for

Depay in the 58th minute and added much-needed life to the Lyon attack. But once again, when the chance came for the French side, they failed to make the most of it — Houssem Aouar finding Ekambi in the box but the Cameroonian’s finish was straight at Manuel Neuer. Bayern lacked the intensity of their first-half display but they made sure of the win in the 88th minute when Lewandowski rose to head home a Kimmich cross from a free kick for his 15th Champions League goal this season. Lewandowski has scored in nine straight UEFA Champions League matches – only Cristiano Ronaldo (11) has a longer streak — and has notched 55 goals in all competitions this season. Lyon’s disappointment will be stronger given that their seventh-place finish in the French league means they will not be competing in European football next season. “We knew that we were up against a better team and we stuck to our game plan but to beat such a team, you need to score when you have the chance,” said Lyon sports director Juninho. “ M ay b e i t wo u l d have been different if we had converted our early chances.”

New Delhi, Aug 20 (IANS): The national camp for badminton players is currently underway at the Gopichand Academy in Hyderabad and ever since it has started, it has seen its fair share of ups and downs. For starters, doubles specialist N Sikki Reddy and a physio tested positive for COVID-19, only to test negative two days later and return to the camp. The positive test had led to the academy being closed down for two days and being sanitised. Moreover, while eight athletes were named in the list for the camp, only three are currently taking part in it while the rest are training in their own capacities in various cities across the country. Men’s singles star Parupalli Kashyap has told IANS that he doesn’t see the harm in allowing other top players to train in the academy. “They (SAI) have basically allowed three or four players to train. Players train for about two or three hours a day and the rest of the time, the courts are empty anyway. So now why don’t they allow another five to ten players who are the top players to train also at different timings?” Kashyap

asked. In keeping with the Sports Authority of India’s (SAI) Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for restarting national camps amid the pandemic, only those athletes who stand a chance of qualifying for the postponed Tokyo Olympics have been called up. Off these, Chirag Shetty is training in Mumbai while his doubles partner Satwiksairaj Rankireddy is in Andhra Pradesh. Sikki’s doubles partner Ashwini Ponnappa is training in Bengaluru while Kashyap said that his wife Saina Nehwal is planning to join the camp in the coming weeks. “Saina is training with me in a different place right now,” he said. “I don’t know when competitions start. I don’t see that happening unless there is a vaccine for COVID-19. There are a lot of factors such as travel and immigration laws that are varying according to the country. “But obviously we want to keep ourselves in some sort of shape and train in the safest way possible. I think normal safety can be maintained in a centre that has around seven or eight players training in it,” he added.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic

Milan, Aug 20 (Agencies): Zlatan Ibrahimovic and AC Milan are closing on a deal for the 2020/21 season. Ibrahimovic - who scored 11 goals in 20 games last season - rejoined Milan in December after leaving LA Galaxy, on a deal until the end of the season that included the option to extend until 2021. The Serie A club are

keen to have the 38-yearold’s signature confirmed by Monday when the squad are scheduled to meet up. It is understood that the parties are looking for middle ground on wages for a one-year deal, between the €7.5m (£6.77m) being sought by Ibrahimovic and the €5m (£4.5m) on offer from Milan. The Sweden interna-

tional previously spent two seasons at Milan, after initially joining them on a season-long loan from Barcelona in August 2010. Ibrahimovic helped the Rossoneri win the Serie A title that season before signing for them permanently in June 2011. He left for Paris Saint-Germain a year later having scored 56 times in 85 appearances.

Sports Award’s dignity has to be maintained, says Sushil

New Delhi, Aug 20 (PTI): Double Olympic medallist wrestler Sushil Kumar on Thursday indicated that the selection committee runs the risk of lowering the dignity of the annual national sports awards by making too many recommendations. An unprecedented five Khel Ratna and 29 Arjuna award recommendations have been made to the sports minister by the selection panel, raising eyebrows. The champion wrestler did not say it in as many words but hinted that giving away the awards to so many athletes can end up lowering their dignity. He said it is necessary to, instead, “maintain the pride” attached with these awards. “I congratulate the ones who have been nominated

Sushil Kumar

but I feel people should work towards maintaining the dignity of these national sports awards. This is not even an Olympic year,” Sushil told PTI. “I myself is an athlete, so I am happy for all, but we must maintain the pride attached with these awards.” In 2016, the government honoured four athletes -- shuttler PV Sindhu, wrestler Sakshi Malik, gymnast Dipa Karmakar and shooter Jitu Rai -- with the Khel Ratna after

their performances at the Rio Olympics. But this year the awards committee has recommended five athletes -- cricketer Rohit Sharna, wrestler Vinesh Phogat, paddler Manika Batra, women’s hockey team captain Rani Rampal and para-athlete Mariyappan Thangvelu for the county’s top sporting honour. Sushil, who won a bronze in 2008 and a silver in the 2012 edition of the Olympic Games, also did not understand why athletes who have already received the highest sporting honour, were considered for an award that sits lower on the rung. Malik and Mirabai Chanu, who have won the Khel Ratna in the past, applied for Arjuna this year and the committee recommended their names.
