Miscreants halt 4-lane works

Staff Reporter

DIMAPUR, AUG 23, (NPN): The state government’s vow to protect business investors has fallen flat when the firm- M/s ECI Engineering & Construction Co.Ltd- entrusted with the 4-lane project along NH 29 from Chathe bridge (Patkai College junction) to Piphema, has had to stop all works since the past ten days due to regular threats for money, thefts of several vehicles including excavators and finally, assault on its labourers who have since fled and abandoned the camp. A senior staff of the firm told Nagaland Post here Thursday, that all these incidents had taken place despite deployment of a platoon of IRB and Home Guards provided for security. Even FIRs lodged with various Police Stations have failed to either trace the whereabouts of the stolen vehicles/equipments or the identities of the 40 to 50 gang of miscreants. The work on the 4-lane had begun in earnest since 2016 despite numerous threats from various miscreants but after the brutal attack on the labour camp some ten days back, the

Editor Nagaland Post, Geoffrey Yaden, who has had a long acquaintance of over two decades with Kuldip Nayar, has also sent a condolence message to Mrs. Bharti Nayar. Nayar had a deep affection for North East and its people. He visited Kohima during the mid-90s to show solidarity with the people and speak on issues of human rights at a time when the entire state was reeling under violence. As the Indian High Commissioner to the UK (1990), Nayar used his influence to overrule strong objections against bringing the body of late A.Z. Phizo from London to India. Nayar was also a regular columnists of Nagaland Post.

Just hours before his death, veteran journalist Kuldip Nayar had penned an article, in which he asked the Modi government to focus on development and good governance in the North East rather than imposing its “Hindutva philosophies”. The 95-year-old, who breathed his last around 12.30 am in a Delhi hospital, also wrote that illegal migration will remain a security challenge for India if no adequate measures are taken including checking and deporting illegal migrants. His article titled ‘Immigrants or vote banks?’ was published in the Nagpur edition of Lokmat Times on Thursday morning, hours after his death. Nayar wrote that the Central government should initiate steps to address the pending inter-state issues in the North East, especially the boundary dispute of Assam with Nagaland, Mizoram, Arunachal Pradesh and Meghalaya. He said the BJP is well entrenched in six of the seven states in the North East and that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his party know well that political loyalities in the region can change very fast. Nayar said the central BJP government has introduced several measures for the development in the North East, trying to connect with the people of the region emotionally. “The ruling BJP must remember that the North East is a plural society devoid of much communal violence unlike the Hindi heartland. ‘No chance at all’: Vajpayee’s ashes brought to Nagaland Govt sets up panel CEC on holding on women quota D I M A P U R , AU G 2 3 simultaneous polls (NPN): State government

NEW DELHI, AUG 23 (AGENCIES): Chief Election Commissioner O P Rawat on Thursday categorically ruled out any possibility of holding simultaneous elections for both the Lok Sabha and the state assemblies without a “legal framework” in place. “Koi chance nahi” (no chance at all), Rawat told reporters in Aurangabad when asked if it was still feasible to hold the parallel polls. His clarification comes amid a growing debate on holding simultaneous polls, with BJP chief Amit Shah making a strong pitch for the idea. He argued that one election would check expenditure and ensure that the nation is not in “election mode” throughout the year.

Meanwhile, in a letter to DC Dimapur, the firm has sought the intervention of the administration and also reaffirmed its commitment to complete the work for construction of the 4-lane which is also being monitored both by the Central and State governments. The firm also stated that more than 1,000 labourers were required to work on the project and so required immediate intervention from the state government. It cautioned that work cannot be done under an environment where miscreants were able to have a field day without any fear of the authorities. The firm expressed the hope that the administration would take appropriate measures to prevent recurrence of such incidents in order to enable the company to carry out all its works for completion of the 4-lane highway.

Shillong, Aug 23: Voting ended peacefully on Thursday for the assembly by-elections to South Tura and Ranikor in Meghalaya with National People’s Party (NPP) candidate Conrad Sangma voicing confidence to win the by-poll and retain his chief minstership. “We successfully concluded the twin by-polls. By and large the polls were held in a smooth manner,” Chief Electoral Officer Frederick Roy Kharkongor told journalists.

“The polling percentage till 5 pm is 72.89 per cent in South Tura and 85.89 per cent in Ranikor. Arunachal tea garden scripts auction history GUWAHATI, Aug 23 (Agencies): Donyi Polo Tea Estate in Arunachal Pradesh scripted yet another piece of history when a grade of specialty tea – golden needles – sold for Rs 40,000, the highest price fetched ever at the auctions till date, The Shillong Times reported. A line of 1.1 kg of the grade was bought by citybased Assam Tea Traders at the record price and sold by Contemporary Brokers Pvt Ltd during Sale 34 at Guwahati Tea Auction Centre on Thursday morning. In November last year, the same variety of Donyi Polo, located at Oyan village near Pasighat in East Siang district, had fetched Rs 18, 801 per kg. Golden needles tea is a superlative China black tea that originates from Yunnan province. “The variety is made from a special clone and comprises newly-emerged buds which are delicately plucked. The leaf has a coating of golden coloured hair, which makes it soft and velvety, while its liqour is bright golden with a mild body, sweet taste and sugarcane pulp-like aroma,” Manoj Kumar, senior manager of the garden, told The Shillong Times on Thursday. “As a matter of fact, Donyi Polo is the only garden in the country that makes golden needles. The tea is hand-crafted by a trained workforce from Ar-

unachal Pradesh and Assam. There was an upper limit of Rs 40,000 for the bid and I am happy that it was sold at that rate,” Kumar said. The garden’s proximity to the cold, glacier-fed Siang river, he said, made all the difference, contributing to the uniqueness of the specialty tea. Donyi Polo, which operates under Siang Tea and Industries Pvt Ltd, was set up in1987. Apart from specialty teas, it manufactures CTC, orthodox, Oolong, green and white teas. “The price fetched is not new for the estate, which has been producing superb specialty teas. In June, its silver needles white tea had fetched a record Rs17,001 per kg at GTAC,” informs Swashat Dutta of Contemporary Brokers. Lalit Kumar Jalan, the proprietor of Assam Tea Traders, said the tea was bought in part for a Kanpurbased wholesaler and an e-commerce website apart from a portion for their retail counter in Guwahati. “The trend of speciality teas being sold at good prices at GTAC has not gone unnoticed, and buyers have been waking up to the fabulous varieties produced in Assam and Arunachal Pradesh,” Jalan said. Experts foresee GTAC becoming a global hub for specialty tea, attracting more business for the centre and global buyers.

motorable point. Kharkongor said there were some technical glitches during the voting but these were immediately sorted out. The by-poll in South Tura assembly seat was necessitated after Agatha Sangma resigned as member from South Tura Assembly seat to pave the way for her brother Conrad to contest the by-election. Conrad is pitted against Congress candidate Charlotte W. Momin, John Leslee K. Sangma and Kris Kabul A. Sangma who are contest-

House for every family by 2022: Modi

Satya Pal sworn in as J&K governor

Rahul blames unemployment, demonetisation, GST for lynchings

100 paise reach the house of the poor,” he said. Modi said his government has the “guts”, and when the entire country is watching and the media is present, he can ask the women beneficiaries if they had to pay any bribe or commission to get the houses. “In reply, the mothers and sisters could say with satisfaction that they got the houses according to rules and they did not have to pay a single rupee bribe,” he said. The prime minister said his endeavour is to ensure that every Indian family has its own home

by 2022. “Gujarat has taught me a lot. This lesson has taught me to fulfil dreams within a specific time. It is my dream, it is our endeavour to ensure that every Indian family has its own home by 2022,” Modi said. He said the government has given money, but along with it, these homes have been built with the “sweat of the family”. “The family decided how will the house be, what material will be used and how will it be made. We did not believe in contractors but the family. When a family makes its own home, it makes it the best,” Modi said. The prime minister arrived in Gujarat this morning on a day’s visit and headed to Valsad. He would later go to Junagadh town in Saurashtra to inaugurate various projects, including a newly-built hospital of the Gujarat Medical and Education Research Society and two fisheries colleges at Veraval town in the Gir Somnath district, another official said.

SRINAGAR, AUG 23 (PTI): Satya Pal Malik, who today became the first career politician in five decades to be sworn in as Jammu and Kashmir governor, has worked with parties of all hues in his nearly 50-year career. Malik, 72, star ted his political journey as a socialist student leader and went on to join many parties with contrasting ideologies. These include the Congress and the BJP as well as Charan Singh’s Bhartiya Kranti Dal and V P Singh-led Janata Dal. He was appointed as Bihar governor on October 4, 2017. The position of governor of Jammu and Kashmir has been a domain of retired civil servants, diplomats, police officers and Army generals since 1967, with the situation in the Valley turning from bad to worse with intermittent periods of calm. Before Malik, politician Karan Singh had held the governor’s post from 1965 to 1967. Before this, Singh was ‘Sadare-Riyasat’ after the state was annexed with Indian union.

rains that hit Idukki, the sluice gates of the dam were opened after the water level touched 142 feet mark on August 15. The affidavit, accessed by News18, states that the Kerala government was managing the situation by letting a major portion of flood waters escape into the sea. “This was done by implementing strict operational control over the spill of the two largest reservoir systems in Idukki and Idamalayar,” it said. It added, “The sudden release from Mullaperiyar Dam, which is the third largest reservoir in the Periyar basin, forced the Kerala government to release more water from Idukki reservoir, which is one of the main causes of the deluge.” The Tamil Nadu government, which has maintained that a Supreme Court directive in May 2014 allows the state to increase the water level to 142 feet, will present defence of its operation of the dam on

MUMBAI, AUG 23 (PTI): Senior Congress leader Gurudas Kamat was cremated today in suburban Chembur here with full state honours in the presence of several dignitaries and a huge number of supporters. Kamat (63), a five-time Lok Sabha MP and a former Union minister, died of a heart attack in New Delhi yesterday and his body was brought to his residence in Chembur. Kamat’s body was wrapped in the tricolour and was taken to the crematorium in the suburb in a flower-bedecked vehicle. His son Sunil lighted the pyre and a police contingent gave the departed leader a gun salute. Among those who paid tribute to Kamat were Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, state minister Vinod Tawde, senior Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge, Mumbai Congress chief Sanjay Nirupam, former chief minister Narayan Rane, BJP leader Ashish Shelar and former Union minister Mukul Wasnik.

Friday. The Vijayan government itself has been accused of not handling opening of dams correctly, with Congress-led UDF Opposition and BJP blaming it for a “man-made disaster”. Leader of Opposition in Kerala Assembly Ramesh Chennithala demanded a judicial probe into the circumstances that led to opening of shutters of 40-odd dams at a time in the state. “The government had no idea which areas would be submerged when nine dams across the Pamba river, 11 dams in the Periyar in Idukki and Ernakulam districts and six across Chalakudy river in Thrissur were opened,” he said. Though there was an increase of 41.44 per cent rainfall this time, the flood situation worsened not because of the downpour, but due to the opening of shutters of 44 dams at a time without giving prior warning, the Congress leader alleged.

R A I P U R , AU G 2 3 (AGENCIES): Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s niece and Congress leader Karuna Shukla has alleged that the Chhattisgarh government is playing politics over the death of the former prime minister. She alleged that Chief Minister Raman Singh never took Vajpayee’s name in the last ten years but is now using his ashes for political gains. “He never named Atal ji in his speeches, gave no importance to him but today they are playing politics over the urn of his ashes,” Karuna said. She said that she was angered as well as sad with the way the BJP government renamed schemes just after the former PM’s death and never mentioned him before. “In none of the elections in the last nine years has Raman Singh ever spoken about the work done by Atal ji,” she said. Rahul insulted India: BJP

BJP today accused Rahul Gandhi of belittling and insulting India in his address at an event in Germany, alleging that the Congress president tried to justify terrorism and “lied through his teeth” to attack the Narendra Modi government. BJP spokesperson Sambit Patra sought the Congress chief ’s apology on his comments on a range of issues, claiming that he presented India in a bad light by allegedly blaming the country’s culture for violence against women.

On Wednesday, a procession of an urn containing the Vajpayee’s ashes was taken out by the BJP from the Raipur airport to the old BJP office in the city. State unit BJP president Dharamlal Kaushik had brought the urn from Delhi which was received by the Chief Minister and BJP leaders at the Swami Vivekanand airport. The urn was then put on a specially designed rath (chariot) and taken to the old state BJP headquarters ‘Ekatm Parisar’, a distance of around 13 kms, in a procession.

NEW DELHI, AUG 23 (AGENCIES): Kerala has placed the blame of the massive floods that have claimed the lives of 373 people on the shoulders of the Tamil Nadu government and its refusal to lower the water level in the Mullaperiyar dam. In an affidavit filed in the Supreme Court on Thursday, the Pinarayi Vijayan government said the sudden release of water from the Mullaperiyar dam was the chief cause of the deadly deluge. The government also pointed out how Tamil Nadu government repeatedly rejected its request to reduce water level in the dam from 142 feet to 139 feet. Although the dam is located in Kerala, it serves and is operated by Tamil Nadu, and Kerala has for long been demanding decommissioning of the dam which has over the years developed leaks. NEW DELHI, AUG 23 (PTI): Congress president Rahul Gandhi linked the incidents of lynching in India to joblessness and the lack of opportunities for the poor who, he said, were not being given equal opportunities. In his address in Hamburg, Germany, Gandhi said the incidents of lynching were a result of the anger emanating from joblessness and destruction of small businesses due to demonetisation and poorly implemented Goods and Services Tax (GST). Saying that the transformation taking place across the world requires certain protections for the common people, Gandhi accused the BJP dispensation of taking away these protections and hitting the informal economy through demonetisation and GST. He said there is no place for the system of paying ‘commission’ in his government. In an apparent jibe at former (Congress) prime minister Rajiv Gandhi who had once claimed that if the Centre releases Re 1, only 15 paise reach the poor, Modi said in his government “if Re 1 goes from Delhi, the entire 100 paise reach the house of the poor”. The prime minister was addressing a public gathering at Jujwa village in Gujarat’s Valsad town after witnessing the collective ‘e-gruha pravesh’ (online house warming) of the beneficiaries of Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Gramin). Sports in Nagaland

gainst Corruption And Unabated Taxation (ACAUT) Nagaland has hit the headlines after a period of lull, when it embarked on a fact finding mission on Wednesday over the status of the Multi Disciplinary Sports Complex (MDSC) in Dimapur which was started in 2006 and supposed to have been completed by 2009. As per information made available to media persons by the contractor, the project was to have been jointly funded between the centre and the state but that since inception, no money was released by the state government. As per the information, the centre had been releasing a sum of Rs.10 crore annually and the total received was around Rs.57 crore. It is yet to be ascertained whether the centre had been giving money from 2006 and finally closed the tap by 2013. The project that was started in 2006 was to have completed in 2009. One interesting yet strange fact about the project is that the state government had not released its share of the money towards funding the project since 2006. This is indeed very strange because, had the state government consistently failed to release its share, then the Centre would have also withheld release of money. Also there appears to be less known about the actual cost of the project except the information that the demand is for Rs.100 crore. It is also strange that a sports complex of such a huge magnitude involving almost all important games, with the stadium, tracks and sitting arrangements etc did not have a complete project report along with the estimate. Even if there was any such Detailed Project Report(DPR), it is wondered as to what extent had the centre agreed to fund the project and how much? Going by what was made available, Rs.100 crore was certainly not at all enough to build such a huge multi sports complex. The state youth resource department has to come out with facts and figures to enlighten the public about a project that has been dogged by alleged non payment etc. It was also alleged that the project had grounded to a halt for want of funds. It is unthinkable that the state government and the department (YRS) have been ignorant about the fact that all civil works had stopped since 2013, as alleged after payments dried up. The story of the MDSC also gives an insight into the state government’s policy to promote sports which has been laid bare. Instead such grandiose policies appear to reveal a thin veneer of seriousness as lack of commitment and corruption always swing the deal to bedevil all good plans. Today, the MDSC looks like a haunted place with its exposed steel rods and the darkened and weather-beaten concrete slabs that look as if they belong to a medieval time. Even if work were to resume, there will always be an issue between mixing the new concrete structure with those which are around 12 years old. The exposed MS Rods have also been tampered by the vicissitudes of nature which would have also affected their quality. What is important now is that there is need for transparency in the entire deal so that the interests of both the contractor and the public can be safeguarded. If the MDSC can finally be functionalised then it will certainly serve as foundation for promoting sports culture in Nagaland.

DailyDevotion Prayer—Battle in “The Secret Place” When you pray, go into your room, and when you have shut your door, pray to your Father who is in the secret place; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly. —Matthew 6:6 Jesus did not say, “Dream about your Father who is in the secret place,” but He said, “…pray to your Father who is in the secret place….” Prayer is an effort of the will. After we have entered our secret place and shut the door, the most difficult thing to do is to pray. We cannot seem to get our minds into good working order, and the first thing we have to fight is wandering thoughts. The great battle in private prayer is overcoming this problem of our idle and wandering thinking. We have to learn to discipline our minds and concentrate on willful, deliberate prayer. We must have a specially selected place for prayer, but once we get there this plague of wandering thoughts begins, as we begin to think to ourselves, “This needs to be done, and I have to do that today.” Jesus says to “shut your door.” Having a secret stillness before God means deliberately shutting the door on our emotions and remembering Him. God is in secret, and He sees us from “the secret place”— He does not see us as other people do, or as we see ourselves. When we truly live in “the secret place,” it becomes impossible for us to doubt God. We become more sure of Him than of anyone or anything else. Enter into “the secret place,” and you will find that God was right in the middle of your everyday circumstances all the time. Get into the habit of dealing with God about everything. Unless you learn to open the door of your life completely and let God in from your first waking moment of each new day, you will be working on the wrong level throughout the day. But if you will swing the door of your life fully open and “pray to your Father who is in the secret place,” every public thing in your life will be marked with the lasting imprint of the presence of God.

Problems & solutions to protect, preserve forests in Nagaland

F

orests play a natural multifunctional auto-balancing role in the ecosystem and are indispensable for survival and continuity of human race on planet earth. “The Lungs of the planet”, forests are a huge carbon sinks arresting major portion of greenhouse gas and helps to combat, address and stabilize climate change. Besides providing us with various intangible and tangible benefits, forests serves as an ecosystem, and sustains life for thousands of birds and animals. But unfortunately, mankind has been a menace and threat to forests and thereby to “OWNRACE”. In the past, exploitation of forest was limited to personal and community uses. But in recent year, we are a witness to insensate abuse and exploitation of forest resources due to ever insatiable greed of human. This has led to loss of biodiversity, rise in temperature, increase in frequency of floods, extinction of several species of plants and animals and hence ecological imbalance. As per India State of Forest Report (ISFR) 2017, whereas, most other states of the country witnessed an increase in forests cover, Nagaland has been ranked second among the north eastern states for a wrong reason, with reported loss of forest cover by over 2.5% of forest area measuring 450 sq km since 2015. But, with 88.3% of forestlands being privately owned; by individuals, communities or villages, who have absolute legal rights over the use of their ancestral inherited land, the government has little or no control over what the individuals, communities or villages decides to do with their forestlands other than advicegiving, and raising awareness about the importance of protection and preservation of forests. As such, effective management, protection and preservation of forests and wildlife in Nagaland, will definitely be ‘NEVER POSSIBLE’ without strong cooperation, active participation, involvement and contribution of local communities. And for this,

T

1. The concerned department and the government should promote the conservation of forests and wildlife outside PAs (Protected Areas), by encouraging, and creating facilitating and enabling environment for the communities and villages, to come forward to declare their forestlands as community reserves. 2. The government should bring in regulations in a way that makes it mandatory to all the recognised villages receiving grant-in-aids and various other development funds from the government to commit to keep and maintain some minimum percentage of area/s of forestlands under their respective village jurisdiction as reserved. This way protection and preservation of forestlands outside PAs (Protected Areas) could be achieved. 3. There should be delegation of powers/authorities to the local communities to manage, protect and preserve their forests and wildlife outside PAs (Protected Areas) as they know their forests best and are the better custodian for the best keep of their forests and wildlife. By delegation of authority to the local communities for the management, protection and preservation of forests and wildlife, they shoulder the three basics elements of delegation of authority i.e. responsibility, decision-making power and accountability. 4. For CRs (Community Reserve Areas), the chairmen and executive members of the management Committees should be elected from among the permanent residents of the village/s. Government servants or those not permanent residents of the village/s should not be allowed the membership of such committees as they cannot manage and protect the forests in absentia. 5. The chairmen and executive members of Community Reserves Forests Committees should have a fixed tenure say one year, for a management plan of 5 years and not permanent tenure for the entire period of

plan. So that, more others get the opportunity to participate, involve and contribute in the management, protection and preservation efforts. By this, the success and failure of management plan can also be monitored, evaluated and assessed annually. 6. Considering the fundamental importance, the forest resources have, in the livelihood of the people that meets and addresses the very basic and subsistence needs of fuel wood, timber, fodder and other forest produce of the rural populace, particularly the poor living in villages; alternative livelihood measures on a sustained basis to improve the living conditions of forests dependent families should be the focus. 7. The success of any scheme, project, programme, be it international, national or local with regard to protection, preservation and development of forest resources in Nagaland will depend largely on whether the alternative livelihood measures have been effectively addressed. Without addressing this issue, the success if any claimed, will be only on papers. This is so because, for the agencies, department and the government, it is development, protection and preservation for the future but for the poor, it is about their daily subsistence needs for survival. “AS SUCH, FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE, FORESTS DEVELOPMENT F U N D S / S C H E M E S E TC SHOULD FOCUS MORE ON ALTERNATIVE LIVELIHOOD AND LESS ON OTHER FOREST DEVELOPMENT ACTIVITIES AS FORESTS AND WILDLIFE WILL FLOURISH IF LEAVE IT BE, WITH NIL HUMAN INTERFERENCE”. 8. With complicated procedure of compensation for crop damage by wild animals, most often the affected families turns to exploit forests resources (cutting and selling of firewood, hunting, killing and selling of wild birds and animals etc) for immediate income source to sustain their family’s daily

needs. And so, the grant of compensation/financial assistance for crop damaged by wild animals should be quick, easy and commensurate to loss. We just cannot add to the loss and rub salt to their wound letting them (poor illiterate aggrieved farmers) run from pillar to post to apply for compensation. By this, they expense more than they will receive as compensation. The concerned department and the government should therefore; streamline the existing complicated procedure of compensation for crop damage by wild animals to facilitate easy and prompt redressal of grievances. 9. Continuous awareness creation on the importance of forests and wildlife, awareness on Wildlife Protection Acts and its implication as far as possible covering all rural areas and villages. 10. Strengthening of Wildlife Crime Control agencies of the state in terms of manpower, mobility and resources to efficiently and effectively deal with wildlife crimes. 11. Setting-up of Wildlife Crime Control Unit in all district headquarters under respective Divisional Forest Officer to control and monitor Wildlife Crime. 12. Financial assistances, recognition, commendation to registered NGOs working in the field of forest and wildlife. 13. Yearly award/recognition/citation/commendation to district/area/village/individuals by the department/government for best conservation and protection efforts. 14. Soliciting the support and cooperation of press, media etc for creation of awareness on importance of forests and wildlife. With the bulk of forestlands being privately owned, these above mentioned few among other things are critical for the success of any efforts on management, protection and preservation of forest and wildlife in our state. That said, the appeal of the government, agencies, bod-

ies, NGOs etc for protection and preservation of forests and wildlife should not be misconstrued as being covetous of the forestlands, the ownership of which is undisputable. Protection and preservation of own forests resources should be with or without government’s financial aid, assistance or support. It should be in true altruistic spirit of saving for the future generations and not for the sake of government schemes and financial assistances. While many villages have been protecting and preserving their forests and wildlife for ages, with “ZERO” financial assistance from the government, it is unfortunate that some are ‘MORE-ONLY’ concerned of the amount of financial assistance/grants rather than the success of protection and preservation efforts. What is even more unfortunate and disappointing is the lackadaisical, apathetic, not my concern attitude of the many so called “THE EDUCATED, THE INFLUENTIAL, THE INTELLECTUAL, THE WELL-INFORMED, THE ENLIGHTENED AND THE LEARNED” when it concerns the cause of forests, wildlife and nature. Their-this Indifferent disposition I say, does much more damage than those actually doing it harm. The mindset that protection and preservation is the responsibility of the government agencies should change. We are all individually responsible for protection and preservation of forests, “THE COMMONWEALTH”. And so, every individual should contribute and do whatever little his/her part towards protection and preservation of this, “EARTH’S KEY LIFE SUPPORT SYSTEM”, to ensure its sustenance for the survival and continuity of human race on earth. “We don’t inherit the earth from our ancestors; we borrow it from our children” - Native American proverb Hukai H. Zhimo, Forest Colony, Dimapur

Christianity before the name ‘Jesus’ in Nagaland

he article aims to retrospect the difference between the beliefs of the Nagas before and after the emergence of the American Baptist Christianity in the Naga society. The history of Christianity in Nagaland indicates that Nagas met or accepted Christianity initially in 1846/1847 (according to the first Naga convert mentioned in two books) and finalized it in 1871/1872 (according to the second Naga convert and the first Naga Church). The two different dates of Christianity in the Naga society indicate that Christianity came in two phases - Rev. Mile Bronson in Phase 1 and Dr. Clark in Phase 2 (Philip. 1999, NBCC. 1997, M.M.Clark. 1978, V. K. Nuh. 2006, M. Ganguli. 1984). Whichever phase marks the history of Christianity in Nagaland, it includes the history of beliefs that Christianity according to the Nagas means the name ‘Jesus’. ‘Jesus’ represents Christianity and ‘Jesus’ is the owner of Christianity. Hence, Christianity in the Naga society began at particular fixed and known time and period. However, in fragmenting the preceding concept of Christianity in the Naga soil with the name ‘Jesus’ as the owner of it, I invite scholars, religious leaders and lay people to see Christianity in the Naga society far beyond the date and time mentioned above and most significantly, Christianity beyond the name ‘Jesus’. Many Naga writers and story tellers have elicited and shared

the history of way of life of the early Naga people in terms of their beliefs, culture, politics and social structure far away from the post “Jesus” Naga society. The early Nagas had beliefs in unseen God, Supreme God/Being and God of heaven and earth or maker of the universe. In brief they had beliefs of living under “High God” who manifests its spirit in human being and this human being has power to heal the sick and suffering. In addition, contextualizing the gender issue, a social justice element in the contemporary world, Nagas in the past had a concept of God in both genders like among the Angami, the High God is female and male among the Semas (Hutton. 1965). The ethics of religious beliefs among the Nagas before and after the emergence of the American Baptist Christianity is not a complete difference as it is interpreted. Missionary like M. Clark and few others have outlined the early Nagas to ‘Savage” people - described in 17 pages of her book (Clark. Ibid) in comparison to the western people and wrongly theologized that early Nagas were barbarians, beast, bloodthirsty, cruel, ferocious, heartless, and uncivilized and so on. Technically, these missionaries had dehumanized the Nagas in a way that Nagas became human only after their arrival. However, the history of early Nagas identically exists to the later definition of human being as defined by the missionaries based

on their version of interpreting the Gospel. I argue that missionaries had only streamlined or repeated or reminded the way of human existence or human ethics among the Nagas from what they already had been practicing. It was an inappropriate approach of the western missionaries and the Naga religious leaders to marginalized the early Nagas to inhuman being by legitimizing the absence of the name ‘Jesus’ to measure the quality of life rather than using ‘civilization’ as an approach to measure the difference between the former and later way of life of the Nagas. Hutton narrates the beliefs of the Angami people in the spirit of other beings like stones, trees, river, birds and so on apart from human being (Hutton. 1921) continues to sustain till today among the entire Naga communities. However, foreign missionaries and Naga religious leaders follow up the marginalization of the early Nagas as people without Christianity based on the explanation of the foreign missionaries that Nagas were spirit worshipers, not the Christianity they have brought. In additional, missionaries and Naga religious leaders take pride of legitimizing the goodness of the Gospel by mentioning few abrogated Naga cultures like headhunting, feast or merit (Narola. 2007, Longkumer. 2010) and war among villages, in fact, like Haimendorf indicated that no inter-villages conflict existed unless it emerged

in related to the issue of divorce and head hunting (Haimendorf. 1969). On the other hand, they have failed to identify the worst post ‘Jesus’ culture in the current Naga society like murder, rape, day and night robbery, divided families, churches, society, land dispute, prostitution corner, bars, drugs, and so on which in fact are more fiercest than the early Naga culture and beliefs and are more visibly anti-Christian/Jesus. There are numerous new cultures and traditions among the current Naga people according to the teaching of ‘Jesus’ which are almost the same to the culture and traditions of the early Naga people. As argued and stated by many scholars and lay people, the same cultures and traditions which were relinquished by the emergence of ‘Jesus’ are given more impor tance and battle today to preserve and revive. The sense of giving important to preserving one’s abandoned culture and tradition in the current Naga society clearly indicates that there is no such difference between the former and later religion (Christianity/AntiChristianity, with/without Jesus) among the Nagas apart from the difference between the names that attribute to God i.e ‘Jesus’ and indigenous name like ‘Hahwang, Yowan, Humpu and so on’. The title of this article “Christianity before the name ‘Jesus’ ” argues that Christianity among the Nagas existed since the inception of the

Naga people and what emerged or arrived with the western missionaries is the name ‘Jesus’ like Clark mentioned in her book “Jesus and Heaven were names now heard for the first time” (Clark. 1978). The only gap between the beliefs of the former and later Nagas was the name of God they believe i.e Christianity with and without the name ‘Jesus’. Therefore, what the western missionaries brought in 1872 among the Nagas was not new Christianity but the name ‘Jesus’ along with the western hymn books, the written word of God (Holy Bible) to add to the existed Christianity of the early Nagas. In theories and praxis, the article may intrigue to

more debatable approach for the readers in defense of personal religious identity, moreover, due to limited space for broader elaboration. However, it is recommendable that there are inevitable reality of history that needs to retrospect and rethink the past initiative in the present participation to identify what is missing in what we belief and practice by following what was taught to follow naively. Rethinking and revisiting is not an anti-approach, it is an approach to collect any missed out understanding. Dr. Lemwang Chuhwanglim, Wagiem Ward, Mon, (lemswang@gmail.com)

Can Nagas build bridges?

Sir,

The Sanuo rȕ (river) in Kohima, the bridge over Temorȕ near Circuit House in Dimapur, the one over the same river in Kuda B. Village, and the one over Chathe rȕ and many others remain unusable or unsafe for years now. The Kohima Village Youth Organisation (KVYO) has rightly called for immediate action to make things right. It is undeniable that when the NDPP ministry under Neiphiu Rio took over in February/March 2018, it also inherited a huge financial deficit, lengths of what we now call “deplorable roads” along with a good number of unfinished projects, some of which look abandoned and spooky. Neiphiu’s party came with a slogan of change. But we know well that changes on the grounds do not happen overnight. Why not wait? The group came when the Centre’s avowed policy of “inclusive growth” is on. There is hope. If not, why not try military Engineers with their own men working under their own Engineers. K.K. in promotion not permissible, Kerala shifts focus to epidemic control Quota state must strike balance, SC told

KOCHI/ THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, AUG 23 (PTI): Floods in Kerala pose a great challenge to the state health authorities as they struggle to check a possible outbreak of epidemics, a problem associated with the deluge, official sources said here today. Health department officials said post-floods their focus has shifted to ensuring medical attention for the injured and the people living in shelter camps, cleaning of houses and wells, distribution of medicines and cleaning materials to the affected people. The impact of floods in the densely populated state can be widespread, they said, adding that this includes deterioration of water quality and risk of epidemics. People who returned to their flood-ravaged homes said their toilets and other sanitation facilities had been rendered useless and water in wells was contaminated with waste. “We are anxious, but we are confident that we will be able to tackle this situation,” health minister K K Shailaja Teacher said. She said the state health department was taking all measures, utilising all its available resources and working actively to check the outbreak of epidemics. “We have a strong team. We are (well) equipped (and) we will tackle this situation,” she added. Reports from the hilly district of Wayanad

said thousands of decaying carcasses of cows, goats and pigs were being dumped in rivers as their scientific disposal became impossible due to inability of their owners to return from the relief camps. The situation in North Paravoor in Ernakulam district was no different. People who returned to their houses in villages devastated by the floods said it was impossible for them live there due to the foul smell emanating from the animal carcasses. Officials said they are equally worried about health risks posed by e-wastes. Tons of electronic items like televisions, computers, mobile phones, refrigerators and air conditioners can be found strewn around in the streets of flood-hit towns of Aluva, Ranni, Chalakkudi and North Paravoor. Disposal of e-waste is also a big challenge. It could contribute to the possibility of outbreak of an epidemic in the fast urbanising, densely populated state,

officials said. With f lood waters receding in most places, the Kerala government has taken up a massive task of cleaning houses and public places filled with slush left behind by the massive deluge that claimed 231 lives, besides causing large-scale destruction. The government has set up a control room here to coordinate the cleaning process across the state and the civic bodies have been entrusted with the task of managing the work, official sources said.

Ker CM visits relief camps affected

With 13 lakh people put up in relief camps after the devastating floods that ravaged Kerala, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan today spent time with many of them, hearing to their problems and assured all help. Vijayan took the helicopter to visit the relief camps in Chengannur, Kozhencherry, Alappuzha, North Paravoor and Cha-

lakudy, covering three districts. “There is no need for any anxiety, government will provide funds to rebuild homes,” Vijayan told the people in the camps, many of them unable to hold back tears. The Chief Minister, who was monitoring the rescue and relief operations from the Secretariat here, decided to visit the camps to get a first-hand knowledge of the sufferings of the people, many of whom had lost their homes and belongings in the floods, the worst in the last 100 years. Over 230 persons have been killed in the deluge. The government has also decided to handover kits containing foodgrains, rice, sugar and dal besides clothes for children and nighties for women to people returning homes from relief camps. As the flood waters receded from their houses, people have complained of snakes, including cobras, crawling all over the place. Many have been bitten by snakes too, they said. With the rescue operations almost over, a massive clean-up drive of houses and public places filled with mud deposits and debris has begun. One of the major problems being faced is the carcasses of animals floating in water bodies and other places. Efforts are on to bury them.

The government has already disposed off around 5000 animal remains in the last two days, according to officials. A control room has been set up here to coordinate the cleaning process across the state, official sources said today adding civic bodies have been entrusted with the task of managing the work. Over 50,000 volunteers have taken up the task of cleaning up houses and public places filled with mud deposits and debris dumped by the floods. Squads with electricians and plumbers will also be visiting homes to provide necessary help to the people, officials said. A political row erupted yesterday over the issue of accepting foreign aid, even as relief materials and donations to the Chief Minister’s Distress Relief Fund (CMDRF) have started pouring in. The issue surfaced after the United Arab Emirates (UAE) government offered USD 100 million (around Rs 700 crore) for flood relief works in Kerala. Attacking the Union government for what he called its ‘negative stance’ to the UAE government’s offer, Finance Minister T M Thomas Isaac said the NDM Policy had not imposed a ban on accepting foreign aid and wanted the state to be compensated.

NEW DELHI, AUG 23 (IANS): Supreme Court was told on Thursday that reservation in promotion is impermissible and unconstitutional, and it is the responsibility of the state to strike a balance while giving reservation in promotion to Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes. Those opposing the reservation in promotion told the five-judge constitution bench headed by the Chief Justice Dipak Misra that there cannot be reservation without balance. “The state is reposed with the responsibility to strike a balance and not just enforce reservation,” pleaded senior counsel Shanti Bhushan and Rajeev Dhavan on behalf of the respondents opposing the Centre’s plea for reconsideration of 2006 judgment by which top court had laid down the criteria for reservation in promotion for SC/ST. Spelling out the foundational features of the 2006 Nagaraj judgment, Dhavan said that the creamy layer was a principle of equality and equality has to be substantive and not just formal. He told the bench that Nagaraj judgment, for ensuring that equality as basic structure is not violated, had laid the pre-condition of compelling reasons -backwardness, inadequacy of representation -- and

Meanwhile, while handing over the cheque to the Kerala chief minister on Wednesday, Patton expressed his deepest condolences to the families of those who had lost their precious lives on behalf of the Nagaland government. He also expressed his gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Central government for declaring Kerala floods as a “Calamity of sever nature”. Patton said Naga people could feel the pain and agony of every citizen of Kerala in this hour of grief and distress as Nagaland too had experiencing torrential rainfall this monsoon that triggered massive landslides, leading to extensive damage to roads, bridges and properties. Stating that Nagaland and Kerala shared brotherly relation since time immemorial, Patton said the Nagas were indebted to their Malayali brothers and sisters for their immense contribution in the development of Nagaland, particularly in the field of human resources and education. Many of them were still in the government service, while many had retired, he added. Patton remarked that, along with the entire nation, people of Nagaland too stood with Kerala in this darkest hour and assured all cooperation.

Known not just as one of India’s most respected journalists but also as an advocate for human rights, Nayar served as India’s high commissioner to the United Kingdom in the 1990s and was nominated to the Rajya Sabha in 1997. The journalistauthor was arrested during the Emergency. Condolences poured in as news of his death came in. Describing Nayar as a veteran editor and writer, diplomat and parliamentarian, President Ram Nath Kovind said he was “a determined champion of democracy during the Emergency” and would be missed by his readers. Prime Minister Narendra Modi said Nayar’s strong stand against the Emergency, public service and commitment to the country will always be remembered. The Editors Guild of India said in its message that Nayar’s many legendary news scoops will continue to inspire generations of young journalists for their sharpness, credibility, speed and standards of due diligence. Nayar, a founder member and president of the Guild, was one of the doyens of Indian journalism, it said in a statement. The Guild, it said, will also soon consider a

proposal to honour Kuldip Nayar’s memory and contributions to journalism. Nayar, who in historian Ramachandra Guha’s words followed the dictates of his conscience rather than the lure of money or fame, wrote several bestsellers, including “Beyond the Lines: An Autobiography” and “Between the Lines”. One of Nayar’s most enduring images will be of him leading peace activists in lighting candles at the Attari-Wagah border on the Independence Days of India and Pakistan -- while India celebrates its Independence Day on August 15, Pakistan does so a day earlier. Nayar’s son, Rajiv Nayar (62) said, “He was a stalwart in his field, a mine of experience. For us in the family, he was a source of inspiration every day.” Hours before death, Nayar wrote: Govt should not impose ‘Hindutva

sions could not be tested on the grounds of “compelling reasons -- backwardness, inadequacy of representation and overall administrative efficiency”. Contending that there could not be any “quantitative exclusion” of SC/ ST, Jaising said that it was only the “100-point roster system that would ensure that nobody (in reserved category) would exceed the ceiling limit of quota”. Jaising appeared for an apex body of SC/ST employees serving in the government. By its 2006 judgment, the top court had upheld the validity of Constitution’s 85th Amendment by which Article 16 (4A) -- providing for reservation in promotion with consequential seniority” was inserted in the Constitution. The reservation in promotion was to come into effect retrospectively from June 17, 1995. The judgment that was pronounced on October 19, 2006, had said: “... State will have to show in each case the existence of compelling reasons, namely backwardness, inadequacy of representation and overall administrative efficiency, before making provision for reservation in promotion.” Senior counsel Dhavan will resume his arguments on August 29 - the next date of hearing.

overall administrative efficiency which the government has to satisfy before embarking for reservation in promotion. Defending the Nagaraj judgment, Dhavan said it can be revisited only if there is foundational defect in it. “There was no fatal flaw in Nagaraj judgment,” Dhavan told the constitution bench. Earlier, arguing for another respondent, senior counsel Shanti Bhushan said that reservation is for a class of people who are backward and not for an individual in a cadre in government job. Finding no infirmity with the reservation at the entry stage, Bhushan said that once a person is collector, Income Tax officer or holding any such or equivalent position then any reservation in promotion would be for an individual, as at that level no one is backward. Reservation in government jobs at entry point would be for the “class of backward people”, but subsequent intra-cadre reservation would be for an individual, as having occupied a position in government service he cannot be described as backward. Earlier, seeking reconsideration of the top court decision in Nagaraj judgement, senior counsel Indira Jaising said that the validity of the constitutional provi-

“The concept of TER started in the late 90s when AUM was Rs 50,000 crore and today it is Rs 23 lakh crore. Therefore, some elements are needed and we are examining the need for rationalisation,” he said. Tyagi said the assets under management (AUM) of the mutual fund industry account for only 11 per cent of the country’s GDP, and the industry has a lot of catching up to do as there are a lot of opportunities for growth. He said financialisation of savings has picked up and since demonetisation, the money came to formal system of banks. The challenge for mutual funds, according to him, is to look for good investible stocks, as money is chasing a few stocks at present, which is the reason for high PE ratio. Tyagi also informed that the regulator will soon come out with policy on close-ended funds.

M u m b a i , Au g 2 3 (PTI): Markets regulator Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) today stressed on the need of having higher competition in the mutual fund industry and called for rationalisation in the total expense ratio (TER). Speaking at an Amfi summit here, Sebi chairman Ajay Tyagi highlighted that the top seven fund houses grab around 60-70 per cent of the market share and 60 per cent of the total profit before tax of the mutual fund industry. “There is a need to have more competition in the sector and there is a need for TER rationalisation; we are looking into this,” Tyagi told reporters on the sideline of the event here. TER is a percentage of a scheme’s corpus that a mutual fund house charges towards expenses including administrative and management.

Mumbai, Aug 23 (PTI): Rising for the fourth straight session, gold gained Rs 30 per 10 grams at the bullion market here today following sustained demand from stockists and retailers even as the precious metal weakened overseas. Silver dipped by Rs 310 per kg due to subdued offtake from industrial units. Standard gold (99.5 purity) climbed by Rs 30 to end at Rs 29,570 per 10 grams from it’s Tuesday’s level of Rs 29,540. Pure gold (99.9 purity) also moved up by the same amount to close at Rs 29,720 per 10 grams as against Rs 29,690. However, silver (.999 fineness) declined by Rs 310 per kg to conclude at Rs 36,700 compared to Rs 37,010 earlier. Globally, gold prices came under pressure from a stronger dollar as the US Federal Reserve reaffirmed intentions to raise interest rates and fresh trade tariffs between the US and China kicked in.

But core inflation has moved up in recent months to 6.2 per cent,” the report said. “The run up in energy prices over the past few months will raise headline inflation temporarily. The impact on food inflation from increased procurement prices to farmers, will be mitigated somewhat by the expected rise in farm output because of a good harvest.” In addition, the company said that the upside to inflation comes from strengthening demand, which is reflected in rising core inflation. “We therefore expect the RBI to continue on a steady tightening path into 2019,” the report said. The US dollar index was up 0.37 per cent at 95.35 against a basket of six currencies. Speculative traders and investors also raised short positions on the Indian rupee. A fresh wave of global risk-aversion trade, triggered by the implementation of new tariffs by the world’s two largest economies revived fears of a full-blown trade war, further added to the downbeat mood. The US and China escalated their ongoing trade war by implementing 25 per cent tariffs on USD 16 billion worth of imports on both sides. A sharp spike in international crude oil prices due to a combination of factors also weighed on the trading front. The benchmark Brent was trading at USD74.55 a barrel today.

had affairs with Mr Trump, Cohen said he had paid the money “at the direction” of Mr Trump, “for the principal purpose of influencing the election”. However, Mr Trump said the two payments had not broken election campaign rules. He said that the payments had come from him personally, not from the campaign, but he had not known about them until “later on”. The president also accused Cohen of making up stories to receive a lighter sentence. “I think everybody would be very poor,” Mr

Trump told Fox and Friends. Pointing to his head, he explained: “Without this thinking you would see, you would see numbers that you wouldn’t believe in reverse.” Mr Trump defended the payments to the two women, and said he had not known about the payments at the time. His comments contradict a statement made earlier by Cohen under oath, in which he said the president had instructed him to make the payments. In July, Cohen released audio tapes of him and Mr Trump allegedly discussing one of the payments before the election. The hush money payments were not reported to the Federal Election Commission during the campaign. The question is whether the payments were made to protect Mr Trump’s personal reputation or to protect his image as a presidential candidate.

Knifeman kills mother, sister near Paris

Paris, Aug 23 (Agencies): A man stabbed his mother and sister to death and seriously injured another person in a town near Paris Thursday before being shot dead by police, AFP reported. The killer had serious mental health problems and had been on a terror watch list since 2016, Interior Minister Gerard Collomb told reporters after visiting the scene in the town of Trappes. The motive for the violence remained unclear despite a claim by the Islamic State group that it was an attack by one of its fighters responding to the terror organisation’s propaganda. Collomb said the attacker was “mentally unstable, rather than someone who was committed, who would respond to orders from a terrorist organisation, in particular Daesh,” another name for IS. Regular French criminal prosecutors are investigating the case rather than anti-terror specialists, Collomb stressed, although

Australian PM defiant amid leadership crisis

Lo n d o n, Au g 2 3 (Agencies): Australian PM Malcolm Turnbull has stared down calls for his resignation amid an escalating leadership crisis that has crippled his government. Mr Turnbull is fighting to retain his position amid a push by senior colleagues to replace him as leader. But he has said he would not contest the leadership if his rivals in the Liberal Party secure enough support to bring on an internal vote. The government suspended parliament on Thursday to try to resolve the crisis. Mr Turnbull told reporters that Australians would be “rightly appalled by what they are witnessing in their nation’s parliament today”. Mr Turnbull has vowed to hold a party meeting on Friday to see if he is still supported by a majority of MPs. If his rival Peter Dutton produces a letter with sufficient signatures, Mr Turnbull has said he will vacate the leadership. That would bring on a leadership contest. In that situation, Australian media say Mr Dutton could face off with Treasurer Scott Morrison and Foreign Minister Julie Bishop. Mr Turnbull has said he would not run. Mr Turnbull has endured poor opinion polls, losses in recent by-elections, and a revolt by the conservative wing of his party.

checks on the knifeman’s phone and computer were under way. Experts have urged caution about recent IS announcements because it has lost credibility after claiming responsibility for seemingly unrelated violence as it faces defeat on the battlefield in the Middle East. The killing spree began early today in Trappes, a poor town with a large Muslim population about 30 kilometres (20 miles) southwest of the capital. Armed police responded to reports of violence and were threatened by the man

who stabbed his mother to death in her home, Collomb added. “He walked towards the police with his knife,” he said. “Police then opened fire.” The assailant has not yet been named. Only a short drive from the wealthy area of Versailles, home to a worldfamous palace, Trappes is known for its social problems linked to poverty, drugs and hardline interpretations of Islam. About 50 locals are suspected of having left France to fight for the Islamic State group in Syria and Iraq,

French security sources have previously told AFP. The knifeman had been on the terror watch list since 2016 after expressing extremist views, a security source told AFP. BFM television reported that he had serious alcohol and drug problems. France remains on high alert after a string of jihadist attacks since 2015 that have claimed the lives of more than 240 victims. IS claimed the Trappes attacker was one of its fighters. “He carried out the attack in response to calls to target subjects of the countries of the coalition” fighting IS, said a statement on its propaganda channel Amaq. The leader of the extremist group Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi had called on Muslims to wage “jihad” in a purported new audio recording released yesterday. The group claimed responsibility for a massacre in Las Vegas last year that saw a wealthy accountant open fire on a crowd in one of the deadliest mass shootings in recent US history.

IS ‘releases audio’ of leader Baghdadi

Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi has not been seen in public since he proclaimed the IS “caliphate” in Mosul’s al-Nuri mosque in July 2014.

L o n d o n, Au g 2 3 (Agencies): The Islamic State group (IS) has released an audio message purportedly from its leader, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, his first in almost in a year. In a speech, he calls on IS supporters to “persevere”, despite the losses the group has suffered in Iraq and Syria. The recording’s authenticity could not be verified, but experts said the voice resembled that heard in other messages. Although it is undated, there are references to recent events, including the detention of a US pastor in Turkey. Russia claimed last year that it had probably killed Baghdadi in an air strike in Syria, but US commanders said they believed he was still alive and hiding in a remote area on

the Syria-Iraq border. In July, IS news outlets reported that Baghdadi’s son Hudhayfah had been killed during an IS “commando operation” in the Syrian province of Homs. Baghdadi - an Iraqi whose real name is Ibrahim Awwad Ibrahim alBadri - has not been seen in public since he proclaimed the creation of a “caliphate” from the pulpit of the Great Mosque of al-Nuri in the northern Iraqi city of Mosul in July 2014. His last audio message was released in September 2017, two months after Iraqi government forces recaptured Mosul and one month before IS militants were driven from their Syrian stronghold of Raqqa by a US-backed alliance of Kurdish and Arab fighters.

IS has now been defeated military in Iraq and most of Syria, and many of its fighters, planners, and senior doctrinal, security and military leaders have been killed. In the audio message published late on Wednesday, Baghdadi appeared to try to shift attention away from his group’s crippling losses, says the BBC’s Martin Patience in Beirut. “For the Mujahideen [holy warriors] the scale of victory or defeat is not dependent on a city or town being stolen or subject to that who has aerial superiority, intercontinental missiles or smart bombs,” Reuters news agency quoted the recording as saying. “Oh Caliphate soldiers... tr ust in God’s promise and His victory... for with hardship comes relief and a way out,” he added. A UN report published last week said it was still estimated to have between 20,000 and 30,000 fighters across the two countries, including thousands of foreign nationals. The group still controls small pockets of territory in the eastern Syrian province of Deir al-Zour, where it has been able to extract and sell some oil, and to mount attacks, including across the border with Iraq. IS militants are also hiding out in Iraq’s Anbar desert, the Ghadaf valley and Husseiniya.

The social network said in an announcement on Wednesday that it was informing four million users that their information has been taken and shared by the myPersonality app alone. It did not say how many more users had been affect by the other 399 apps it has suspended. Apps were suspended ‘due to concerns around the developers who built them or how the information people chose to share with the app may have been used,’ a company official said. Launched in March by Facebook, the app unit stemmed from the Cambridge Analytica data privacy scandal. Facebook admitted that up to 87 million users

may have had their data hijacked by Cambridge Analytica, which was working for Donald Trump’s 2016 presidential campaign. The myPersonality app was banned by the social network for not agreeing to an audit and ‘because it’s clear that they shared information with researchers as well as companies with only limited protections in place.’ The quiz, called myPersonality, collected highly sensitive data - including psychometric test results that reveal how neurotic or extrovert an

Kabul, Aug 23 (IANS): Afghanistan has said it would not participate in peace talks with the Taliban, to be hosted by Russia in Moscow in the beginning of September. “Afghanistan would not attend the Moscow talks and meeting. We will not participate, the peace process should be held under the leadership of the Afghan government and should be Afghan-led,” Sibghatullah Ahmadi, spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs was quoted as saying by TOLO News on Wednesday. Afghanistan’s decision of not participating in the talks, to which 12 other countries have been invited, could come as a blow to the Kremlin’s initiative scheduled for September 4. “The processes will give no result and will achieve nothing in which Afghanistan is not taken in the loop and Afghanistan is not accepted as the main

for now, he said R&HMS will play the role of a felicitator between Nagas and Kerala. He exuded confidence that the concert would inspire other musicians and societies to take similar activities for the people in need. To queries why the society could not organize the same for the affected people by natural calamities in the state, R&HMS secretary finance Neingulie Nakhro admitted its shortfall for not reaching out to the people. However, he said if there is God’s will, R&HMS will try to do more for the people in future. He added that this was first ever relief concert initiated by R&HMS and apologized to the people who felt

that R&HMS was insensible to the situation. He said that just because they missed to reach out to people in need, it did not mean that the society would remain the same in future. Nakhro assured R&HMS commitment to reach out to people in need within the state in near future. To query whether the event was other way to promote R&HMS since R&HMS organizes national and international level, Metha said R&HMS was a movement for art and culture. Pitt, Jolie to continue interim child custody agreement

A

ctors Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt have called off the ongoing custody battle over their six children, and have decided to continue a temporary agreement. A source told Entertainment Tonight that the estranged couple no longer needed to participate in a planned custody hearing after agreeing to the interim arrangement, about which there are no specific details available yet. “Nothing has changed since the judge made an interim custody agreement a few months ago in which he said Angelina must let Brad see the children.” Jolie dragged Pitt into a public dispute over child support payments earlier this month, claiming he was not paying “meaningful” child support since their separation. But now according to sources, the actress is said to have ‘dissolved’ the matter and is keen to proceed amicably. Jolie filed for divorce in September 2016, ending two years of marriage and a 10-year romance. The two have six children -- Maddox, Shiloh, Pax, Vivienne, Zahara and Knox -- for whom she is seeking primary custody. The permanent custody deal is yet to be decided. (IANS)

Akshay Kumar, Salman Khan in world’s highest paid actors list

B

ollywood superstars Akshay Kumar and Salman Khan have secured a spot in Forbes magazine’s World’s Highest Paid Actors 2018 list, topped by Hollywood ace George Clooney. Akshay, known lately for his socially conscious roles in films like “Toilet: Ek Prem Katha” and “Pad Man”, is in the seventh spot with ear nings of $40.5 million between June 1, 2017 and June 1, 2018. He minted millions from backend profits and endorsing some 20 brands, including Tata and Eveready, Forbes said. Salman also remains one of India’s top earners with $38.5 million, with hits such as “Tiger Zinda Hai” and by cashing in on backend profits, coupled with a slew of endorsements from Suzuki motorcycles to Chlormint gum. Clooney, 57, is at the top of the list with $239 million despite not having helmed a hit in years. His earnings are thanks to the up to $1 billion purchase of his Casamigos Tequila. The list tallies both onscreen and extracurricular earnings in the 12-month scoring frame.

Ear ning estimates are based on data from Nielsen, ComScore, Box Office Mojo and IMDB, as well as interviews with industry insiders. All figures are pretax; fees for agents, managers and lawyers are not deducted. Dwayne ‘The Rock” Johnson banked $124 million pretax to rank number 2 in the highest paid actors list. Rounding out the top three is Robert Downey Jr, who pocketed $81 million. His “Avengers: Infinity War” co-star Chris Hemsworth, with $64.5 million, scored a career best thanks to his cut from Marvel movies such as “Thor: Ragnarok”. China’s top movie

star Jackie Chan scored the fifth spot with $45.5 million, followed by Will Smith on number 6 with $42 million. In the eighth position is Adam Sandler with $39.5 million, while Chris Evans completes the top 10 list with $34 million. Together, the world’s ten highest paid actors tallied $748.5 million, before fees and taxes. The salaries of topearning male leads dwarf those of the world’s highest paid actresses, who earned a cumulative $186 million in the same scoring period, or just one quarter of the men’s earnings -- highlighting the gender pay gap issue that persists. o show the boundless concern of Nagas to the people affected in Kerala, Rattle and Hum Music Society (R&HMS) will be organizing “Nagaland for Kerela Concert”, on August 24 at the heritage starting 5 P.M. Informing this to media persons, Thursday afternoon at Dream Café, president R&HMS Theja Meru said R&HMS was a society to promote music and arts, yet he said considering the huge catastrophe in Kerala, the members took a spontaneous decision to reach out to the people of Kerala by organizing the concert to remind them of Nagas’ prayer and love. He justified that R&HMS was only a me-

dium to start off and that “we are not neglecting our own people by organizing for Kerala” but the event was organized to reach out with a message of love. Secretary admin Tolto Metha said the concert was a small initiative and the amount may not be of much help to them just as needed. However, he said through the concert, it desired to send message of love and gesture of concern. Metha added that it was moved by the epic destruction in Kerala where lakhs of people were placed in relief camps and to take care of such huge population was a big challenge. He said there was much to be done for the affected people in Nagaland yet

Shardul bags silver, Ankita wins bronze; take India’s medals tally to 18

(L-R) Indian shooter Shardul Vihan celebrates after winning silver medal in Men’s Double Trap event. Ankita Raina in action during a match. Indian women’s kabaddi team tackle a Chinese Taipei raider in the semi-finals match, at the Asian Games 2018, in Jakarta on Thursday. (PTI)

Palembang/Jakarta, Aug 23 (PTI): Indian shooting’s teenage brigade threw up another surprise in Shardul Vihan’s silver but a taken-for-granted kabaddi gold was lost in a shocker as the country endured its most disappointing day at the 18th Asian Games here. With no gold added to the tally today, India slipped to 10th with four gold, four silver and 10 bronze for a total of 18 medals. The 15-year-old Vihan, with his double trap silver, became the youngest Indian shooter to win a medal at the Games where a 16-yearold Saurabh Chaudhary (10m air pistol) had become the youngest Indian shooter with a gold. The Meerut-based Vihan shot 73 in the final after topping the qualification earlier in the day. The gold went to 34-year-old South Korean Hyunwoo Shin

and bronze to 42-year-old from Qatar, Hamad Ali Al Marri. A piece of joyous history was scripted by him at the shooting ranges of Palembang but some 600km away in Jakarta, the men’s kabaddi team suffered a shock defeat at the hands of Iran in the semi-finals to sign off with a bronze. The 18-27 defeat will not be easily forgotten for it ended India’s unchallenged kabaddi domination in the Asiad since the sport was first introduced in 1990. But the women’s team restored some lost pride for India, overwhelming Chinese Taipei 27-14 to enter their third consecutive final. The two-time champions will meet Iran in the final. This is the first time since the traditional rural sport was included in the Asian Games in 1990 that the Indian men’s team will not take home the gold.

Among the positives to count today was Rohan Bopanna and Divij Sharan’s gritty win to enter the men’s doubles final, putting India in strong contention for a gold tomorrow. Bopanna and Sharan were fighting it out against the Japanese pairing of Shimbakuro S and Uesugi Kaito and having lost the first set 4-6, the Indians switched sides before emerging 6-3 10-8 in the next two sets. In singles, however, Ankita Raina bowed out with a bronze medal after losing in the semifinals. Ankita played her heart out against top seed Shuai Zhang before settling for bronze. Another tennis medal was assured when world number 161 Prajnesh Gunneswaran outlasted 273rd ranked Kwon Soonwoo of South Korea 6-7 (2 ), 6-4, 7-6 (8) in a marathon quarterfinal lasting almost

Kohli back as No.1 ICC Test batsman

Virat Kohli

Dubai, Aug 23 (IANS): India skipper Virat Kohli on Thursday regained the No.1 ICC Test batting spot after notching 200 runs (97, 103) in the just-concluded Trent Bridge Test against England, that India won by 203 runs. According to an International Cricket Council (ICC) statement, Kohli’s feats took him to 937 rating points -- the highest he has reached so far -- and that helped push him back atop Steve Smith in the charts. The 29-year-old had

reached the No.1 spot after totalling 200 runs in the first Test at Edgbaston, but scores of 23 and 17 in the second Test at Lord’s meant he slipped back down to the second spot. The Indian skipper is now only one point outside the top 10 of an all-time rating points list: Don Bradman (961 points), Steve Smith (947), Len Hutton (945), Jack Hobbs and Ricky Ponting (both on 942), Peter May (941), and Gary Sobers, Clyde Walcott, Vivian Rich-

ards and Kumar Sangakkara (all on 938 points). He is followed by banned Australian Smith while New Zealand’s Kane Williamson occupies the third spot in the charts. Among other Indians, Shikhar Dhawan, who returned to the side after being dropped at Lord’s, and Ajinkya Rahane, who found much-needed form again with a crucial 81 in the first innings, both moved up four places. Dhawan now sits at No.22 in the batsmen’s rankings, three places below Rahane at No.19. England skipper Joe Root and Jonny Bairstow, however lost two places each to be positioned at No.5 and No.11, respectively. Meanwhile, after a maiden five-wicket haul in the first innings followed by an unbeaten 52 in the second innings, all-rounder Hardik Pandya also made big gains.

four hours. India were also assured of at least a bronze medal in the squash competition as the country’s top ranked player Saurav Ghosal set up a quarterfinal clash with compatriot Harinder Pal Sandhu in the men’s singles event. Both Joshna Chinappa and Dipika Pallikal Karthik made it to the women’s singles quarterfinals with facile wins. In badminton, PV Sindhu had to dig deep to down a fighting Vu Thi Trang of Vietnam but Saina Nehwal eased into the next round. World Championship silver medallist Sindhu faced stiff resistance from world number 52 Trang before prevailing 21-10 1221 23-21 in a tough opening round which lasted 58 minutes. In contrast, Saina just walked into the second round with a crushing 21-7

Veteran pacer Goswami quits T20Is New Delhi, Aug 23 (IANS): Veteran India pacer Jhulan Goswami on Thursday announced her retirement from T20 Internationals with immediate effect. The 35-year-old Goswami, represented India in 68 T20Is picking up 56 wickets that included a five-wicket haul against Australia in 2012. “India pacer Jhulan Goswami has decided to call it quits from the shortest format of the game. Goswami thanked the BCCI and her teammates for all the love and support she garnered during her stint with the T20I team and wished them luck going forward,” a BCCI statement read. Goswami, a veteran of 10 Tests and 169 ODIs is currently the leading wickettaker in the women’s ODI format and also the first woman cricketer to take 200 ODI wickets.

21-9 win over Iran’s Soraya Aghhajiagha in just 26 minutes. But, archery continued to throw up disappointments, the fancied Deepika Kumari being a major one. The former world number one flopped yet again at the big stage on a depressing day for India’s recurve archers, whose challenge ended at the Games. Only Atanu Das managed to reach the quarterfinals while the other three fell by the wayside at the preliminary stages. Das lost his quarterfinal 3-7 to Indonesia’s Riau Ega Agata Salsa Billa. There was heartbreak in weightifting too. Ajay Singh finished a creditable fifth with a personal best effort but senior compatriot and Commonwealth Games gold-medallist Sathish Sivalingam got injured during the men’s 77kg category competition.

Sathish, who holds the national record of 339kg, suffered a thigh injury during a failed attempt of 178 kg in clean and jerk to eventually lift a total of 314kg (144kg + 170kg). In swimming, national records were shattered but no medals came off the effort. Srihari Natraj twice bettered his in the 200m backstroke but could finish only sixth in the final while Virdhawal Khade ended last in the 50m butterfly. A positive start was, however, made on the golf course where Aadil Bedi shot a bogey-free 69 that placed him and the Indian team tied second at the end of the first round. Bedi was one shot behind the reigning Australian Amateur champion, Keita Nakajima of Japan, one of the favourites. But the Indian rowing contingent had a disastrous day, missing out on as many

single sculls final, clocking 8:28.56. He was consistently within the sevenminute mark in the run-up to the Games and his performance even in the Heats was nowhere close to his below par effort today.

diva’ is world’s hottest striker

File photo of China’s Wang Shanshan. (AFP)

Jakarta, Aug 23 (Agencies): Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo step aside -- the hottest striker in world football at the moment is China’s “Nine-Goal Diva” Wang Shanshan, AFP reported. Wang earned that nickname from Chinese fans and media when she plundered a scarcely believable nine goals in a dizzying 29 minutes after coming off the bench in a 16-0

demolition of Tajikistan on Monday at the Asian Games in Indonesia. The forward has found the net a total of 11 times, netting in the 7-0 opening victory over Hong Kong and adding a soaring header as China’s women beat formidable North Korea 2-0 on Wednesday to top their group and make the quarter-finals in style. China’s free-scoring women, yet to concede a goal, are being feted back home and 28-year-old Wang, in particular, is making headlines for her astonishing prowess in front of goal. There have been tonguein-cheek suggestions that she could be the answer to the goal-scoring problems of the Chinese men. Wang’s sizzling form is all the more surprising because prior to the past week she was hardly prolific, although she did catch eyes by scoring a backheel volley against South Korea last year -- the kind of exquisite strike that Messi and Ronaldo would be proud of. She currently plies her trade in China’s little-noticed domestic women’s league. “For the past three group matches, Wang Shanshan scored 11 goals and became Chinese women’s football’s talisman,” China’s Tencent Sports said in an online article. “In more crucial tournaments, Wang Shanshan will become the key player in helping the women’s team win gold.” Against the North Koreans, midfielder Wang Shuang, who recently signed for Paris Saint-Germain’s women’s team, opened the scoring in the eighth minute, finishing off a fluid passing move.
