Sonia continues; CWC maintains status quo
NEW DELHI, AUG 24 (AGENCIES): The stormy Congress Working Committee meeting on Monday ended with rival camps striking a common note of amicability and with the news that Sonia Gandhi will continue as interim party president as of now. She has asked Congress general secretary (organisation) K.C. Venugopal to convene an All India Congress Committee (AICC) session to choose a new president. CWC meeting saw Gandhi family loyalists and the rebel camp (consisting of 23 senior leaders who had expressed the need for the party’s democratic overhaul in a letter to Sonia Gandhi) attacking each other in the morning. A second note of discord came to the fore when another rebel leader Ghulam Nabi Azad offered to resign if allegations made by some Congress leaders outside the CWC, that the letter was written at the behest of or in collusion with the BJP are proven to be true. Rahul Gandhi and his aides were also reported to have attacked the 23 leaders for having written a letter to Sonia Gandhi at a time
School reopening: DoSE of warns fake info on social media D I M A P U R , AU G 2 4 (NPN): The directorate of school education (DoSE) has clarified that a pamphlet being circulated in social media was a rough work created with dummy dates for the purpose of discussion at higher level and was not an authorised/approved notification. In a clarification note, principal director Shanavas C said the department’s attention has been drawn to unauthorised information being circulated on social media regarding re-opening of schools in Nagaland for classes 9 to 12 from the month of October. Advising everyone not to circulate the “unauthorised pamphlet” and also not to be misled by such unauthorised information, Shanavas also warned that appropriate disciplinary action would be initiated against the staff who leaked the rough work to unauthorised persons without the approval of competent authority. It may be recalled that the DoSE, in July, had warned schools that reopening of schools in any manner in violation of the ‘lockdown order’ is strictly prohibited.

(August 7) when the Congress was in the middle of Rajasthan crisis. Rahul is also believed to have taken offence at the aggressive posturing by the rebel leaders when they knew that the Congress president was unwell. However, after attacks and counter-attacks, the CWC appears to have seen a truce struck between the two camps. At least a unanimous resolution that was passed at the end of the meeting indicated so. Addressing a press conference, Venugopal said that the meeting was attended by around 52 leaders, including all the CWC members, special and permanent invitees, and four chief ministers. “All of them spoke in the seven hour long meeting,
following which the CWC passed an unanimous resolution,” he said. CWC reportedly also agreed to form a committee to assist Sonia to address the concerns raised by the 23 leaders in the days to come. Letter’s signatories became focus, not the content: The letter had raised several concerns and demands — the need for elections to the CWC, a leadership that is visible and active on the field, and an urgent constitution of a central parliamentary board, among other things. The signatories said none of these concerns were addressed and this was an “opportunity lost”, said a party leader, who was in the meeting.
“It’s like the actual content of the letter and concerns flagged were circumvented, and the focus was on who wrote the letter and why,” the leader added. Three of the signatories, Manish Tewari, Kapil Sibal and Shashi Tharoor, arrived at Azad’s residence soon after the meeting got over to discuss the “future course of action”. “Everyone unanimously praised the leadership of Mrs Gandhi. The content of the letter wasn’t addressed as much as why such a letter was written in the first place,” said the leader. Many leaders who were signatories of the letter, also emerged as the first ones to praise Sonia’s leadership

Sonia hurt, but says ‘let’s move on’: A second party source said Sonia felt “hurt” over the letter. “She said such concerns should be raised and kept internal, not leaked to the media,” the source said. Rahul reiterated her statement, saying it was on “the party’s insistence” that Sonia agreed to accept the post of the interim president one year ago. “But in her closing remarks, she made it very clear that she holds no ill-will or grudges against anyone, including the signatories of the letter,” a second party leader said. It was a very “let’s forget and move on approach’,” the leader added.

Petrol prices hiked again D I M A P U R , AU G 2 4 (NPN): State-owned oil marketing companies (OMCs) increased petrol prices across the four metros for the fifth consecutive day Monday. Diesel prices, however, remained the same across the metros. According to IOCL website, price of the petrol in the national capital was increased by 13 paise to Rs 81.62 a litre from the previous day price of Rs 81.49 a litre. After Monday’s rate revision, petrol price in Dimapur stood at Rs.86.93 per litre while in the state capital petrol price increased to Rs.87.83 per litre. Currently, fuel prices vary in different parts of the country due to factors such as price of crude oil, foreign exchange rate and local taxes. State-run oil corporations, account for the majority of fuel outlets in the country, and review the rates of petrol and diesel on a daily basis.

NIDA warns of ‘repercussive measures’ if govt fails to act D I M A P U R , AU G 2 4 (NPN): Nagaland In-Service Doctors’ Association (NIDA) has warned of “repercussive measures” that will jeopardize the entire health services throughout the state if the concern authority failed to take exemplary punishment as demanded by the Dimapur unit against those IRB personnel allegedly involved in the August 21 assault on Dr. Atoka Wotsa. In a press note, NIDA president Dr. Ritu Thurr and secretary Dr. Ahu Sekhose stated that the tolerance level of the association has reached its tipping point due to repeat of such abhorrent incidences in the recent COVID 19 times. It was lear nt that NIDA had warned of calling for a one-day complete shutdown of all medical services throughout Nagaland on August 26 from 6 a.m., with emergency services to remain functional, if the authority concern failed to act. According to the press note, NIDA said that in spite of the barbaric assault by erring police personnel
on Dr Nosezol Sezo on April 3, 2020 at Dimapur and Dr Mongshithung on April 17, 2020 at Wokha, NIDA, as a matured organization, had refrained from taking any drastic action, keeping in mind the sacred responsibility of public health as its top priority. NIDA said that unless an exemplary action was immediately initiated by concerned authority as demanded by the NIDA unit, Dimapur, the association will be compelled to resort to undesirable repercussive measures which will totally jeopardize the entire health services throughout the state. Nagaland In-Service Doctors’ Association therefore sought the support of public and NGOs to ensure timely justice to the aggrieved. It was also learnt that NIDA Dimapur unit had deferred its decision to shut down all medical services following the request made by the parent body president. NIDA Dimapur unit, in its August 23 meeting
minutes, stated that it had handed over the August 21 case to the parent body for “further perusal till the logical conclusion of the case on urgent basis.” It may be mentioned that the state government on August 23, 2020 instituted an inquiry committee to probe into the alleged assault on a doctor, Dr. Atoka Wotsa by police personnel on August 21 night. In an order issued through the principal secretary (Home), Abhijit Sinha, the 3-member inquiry committee will be headed by commissioner & secretary Rural Development, Neposo Theluo and two others as members-- secretary Law and Justice Khanrinla Koza and additional deputy commissioner Niuland, Rosy Margaret Athrila. The committee has been directed to submit its report within seven days of the date of issue of this notification (August 23, 2020). The 3-member panel was constituted in supersession to the independent inquiry formed by deputy commissioner Dimapur.
Nagaland Gov calls on Jitendra Singh
(L) R.N. Ravi calling on Dr. Jitendra Singh in New Delhi on Monday. (Twitter)
NEW DELHI, AUG 24 (PTI): Nagaland Governor R.N. Ravi on Monday called on Union Minister Jitendra Singh and discussed with him the progress of various development projects in the North Eastern state. Singh, the Union Minister for Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER), said that soon
after assuming office in 2014, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had stated that every effort would be made to bring the northeastern region at par with the more developed regions of the country, an official statement said. In the last six years, not only developmental gaps were bridged successfully, but the Northeast has
also gained psychological confidence, he said. The minister underlined that all sections of society are ready to move under Prime Minister Modi, the statement said. Singh also tweeted that he had a fruitful meeting with Governor of Nagaland, R N Ravi and exchanged views on various state-related issues.
SCS Chessore bags national award for Innovation in Edn Prashant Bhushan refuses to apologise to SC for his 2 tweets against judiciary D I M A P U R , AU G 2 4 (NPN): Innovating learning tools adopted by St Christopher School, Chessore in the ongoing COVID-19-incuded school shutdown to ensure continuity in education have won the school the maiden “Pallikkutam National Award for Innovation in Education, 2020”. Constituted by Rajagiri Media, Kerala, in association with Indian Institute of Management, Kozhikode, Federal Bank Ltd and Indian Institute of Management, Bangalore, the Pallikkutam National Award had 55 participants from all over the country. The first prize comprised Rs one lakh and a citation, while the second and third prizes comprised Rs 50,000 and Rs 25,000 respectively. According to the organisers, the objectives of the award are to honour the
educational leadership of the nation who managed to provide education despite the disruption caused by COVID-19-induced lockdown, showcase the innovative ways in education as a model for other institutions to follow and to spread the praxis of excellence in education and make the quality of education universal. Started by Diocese of Kohima in 2015 due to the specific difficulties faced by people following communal clashes, St Christopher School is a middle school up to class VIII and has about 500 students with 12 staff.
Though the existing infrastructure is bare minimum, the diocese is trying to build a proper building against all odds, especially considering its remote location and very poor road condition. Despite the lockdown, the school management under leadership of Rev Fr Loyola Anthony motivated the teachers to realise that learning is not confined within the four walls of classrooms, but can also take place at home with proper guidance. But being located in a remote area, technological interventions like virtual classes, online tests, use of
smartphones and televisions were not feasible. Hence, the school authority relied more on direct intervention by allowing children to do more home-based activities to learn and grow by exploring their own creativity. An awareness campaign was carried out to prepare them to combat COVID-19 through skits, placards, poster and booklets. For those who could afford smartphones, notes and assignments were shared and online tests conducted through WhasApp. For those who had no access to smartphones, school office was kept partly open every day for few hours by following SOPs of the government so that they could collect prepared notes, assignments and project works and gather information on various programmes initiated by the school. And the result was 100% participation.
NEW DELHI, AUG 24 (PTI): Activist-lawyer Prashant Bhushan refused to offer an apology to the Supreme Court on Monday for his two tweets against the judiciary saying what he expressed represented his bona fide belief which he continued to hold. “An insincere apology would amount to the contempt of my conscience and of an institution”, Bhushan said in his supplementary statement filed in the suo motu contempt case against him by the top court, taking note of advocate Anuj Saxena’s complaint. An apology for expression of beliefs, conditional or unconditional, would be insincere, he said. On August 20, the top court had granted time till August 24 to Bhushan to reconsider his
Prashant Bhushan
“defiant statement” refusing to apologise and tender “unconditional apology” for contemptuous tweets against the judiciary and rejected his submission that quantum of punishment be decided by another bench. Bhushan said as an officer of court he believes as a duty to speak up when he believes there is a deviation from its sterling record. “Therefore I expressed myself in good faith, not to malign the Supreme Court
or any particular Chief Justice, but to offer constructive criticism so that the court can arrest any drift away from its long-standing role as a guardian of the Constitution and custodian of peoples’ rights,” he said. Bhushan further said that an apology cannot be a mere incantation and any apology has to, as the court has itself put it, be sincerely made. The apex court on August 14 had held Bhushan guilty of criminal contempt for his two derogatory tweets against the judiciary saying they cannot be said to be a fair criticism of the functioning of the judiciary made in the public interest. He faces simple imprisonment of up to six months or with a fine of up to Rs 2,000 or with both as punishment. K Y M C

Differences within Manipur BJP resolved, says CM Biren
Correspondent
IMPHAL, Aug 24: Manipur chief minister N Biren Singh on Monday claimed that differences within the ruling BJP party have been resolved after a series of meetings with Central leaders. The chief minister accompanied by six Congress MLAs who resigned from the state Assembly as well as Congress party were camped at the national capital since August 16 last. During their camping there, the chief minister met not only party national president JP Nadda but some other leaders. The six ex-legislators have also joined the BJP formally. The chief minister and his accomplices stayed further in the national capital allegedly to meet Union home minister Amit Shah who is currently at AIIMS hospital for medical treatment. However, they returned without meeting Shah the date of his discharged from the hospital was not confirmed. Earlier, there were reports that the chief minister was seeking appointment with Amit Shah to discuss

his proposed ministry reshuffle. Reliable sources had said that Singh has a plan to affect a major reshuffle in his council of ministers. According to sources, Singh intends to drop at least five incumbent ministers to induct new faces. He also plans to induct two of the six resigned Congress MLAs while affecting the reshuffle. The chief minister accompanied by the six exlegislators, out of which five had joined the BJP during their camping in Delhi touched down at Imphal Airport in the afternoon, around 3pm. MLA RK Imo, the son-in-law of the chief minister, who has been expelled from the Congress for his anti-party activities, also accompanied the chief
minister. Upon arrival at Imphal airport, all of them including the chief minister were subjected to COVID-19 test. While talking to reporters, Singh claimed that all the problems within the ruling party have been settled through party Central leaders who he met during his camping in New Delhi. The chief minister was referring to the discord within the party after some party legislators demanded replacement of Singh as chief minister while some others demanded ministry reshuffle. With the internal discord resolved, the party will now concentrate on by-elections which will be held to fill the vacant seats of the state Assembly. As notified by the Manipur Legislative Assembly secretariat, 13 seats were lying vacant in the 60-seat Manipur Legislative Assembly. Among them, four were disqualified by the Speaker under Anti-defection Law while nine of them resigned as members of the state Assembly. Among the nine resigned MLAs, three were from the BJP while the rest six were recently resigned Congress MLAs.

Meghalaya reaffirms closure of entry points to State Correspondent Shillong, Aug 24: Notwithstanding the central government’s unlocking restrictions on interState movement of people and goods, the Meghalaya government on Monday reaffirmed its earlier decision to shut down all entry points to the state for one week in September and November in view of the spurt of COVID-19 cases in the State. In a communication to Chief Secretaries of all States and Union Territories on Saturday, Union Home Secretary Ajay Bhalla has reiterated to States that there should be no restric-
tions on inter-State and intra-State movement of persons and goods during the ongoing unlocking process. However, Meghalaya Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong said that the closure of all entry points was necessitated to give a much needed break to frontline workers posted at all entry points across the State. However, certain essential inter-state transits will not come under the purview of the shutdown of the entry points. “This decision was taken for easing out the pressure on the frontline health workers who have to man the entry points 24
x 7. Humanly speaking, we need to understand that it is difficult for anybody to continue working without any break. Therefore, the government has decided that the decision of closure will continue and notification in this regard has come out excluding transit movement,” he iterated. The entry points are Byrnihat in Ri-Bhoi district, Ratacherra in East Jaintia Hills district, Bajengdoba in North Garo Hills district, Mirjumla in South West GaroHills district, Tikrikilla and Hallidayganj in West Garo Hills districts. During the past six months, 30,470 citizens of the State have returned to
the State from all across the country. Moreover, Tynsong said that during the closure, the areas where frontline workers are posted and working will be fully disinfected. The Deputy Chief Minister also urged all local authorities who are imposing their own forms of restriction in terms of inter-district movement, to refrain from doing so. “Local authorities should respect the notifications issued by the State government with regards to quarantine and should not enforce their own rules and regulations.” Tynsong said.
Central team to visit Assam to assess flood damage
Guwahati, Aug 24 (IANS): A six-member central team would arrive in Assam on Wednesday to assess the damage caused by the monsoon floods that affected 57 lakh people and killed at least 113 people between May 22 and August 20, officials said on Monday. Assam’s Revenue Department Commissionercum-Secretary M.S. Manivannan said that the central team led by Sandeep Poundrik, Joint Secretary (Mitigation), National Disaster
Management Authority, would visit some floodaffected districts to assess the damage to property, crops and various other assets including river dams. “During the three-day visit to the state, the central team would hold meetings with senior officials of the Assam government and disaster management authority,” Manivannan told IANS over phone. He said that the Assam government has sent an interim flood damage report to the Centre and has demanded around Rs 2,300
crore as compensation for the tragedy. “The floods since May and until August 20 had caused huge damage to the infrastructure including roads, bridges and embankments.” He also said that over 81,000 people were rescued by the National Disaster Response Force and Assam State Disaster Response Force personnel. Like previous years, Assam this year too witnessed devastating floods that killed 113 people in 22 districts,
while 26 others were killed in landslides since May 22. With a respite in monsoon rains, the situation significantly improved in the first week of this month even as 57 lakh people have been affected in 5,378 villages in 30 of the state’s 33 districts. According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) officials, a total of 2,65,402 hectares of crops in 30 districts are badly affected while the worst-hit 11 districts are Goalpara, Morigaon, Bongaigaon, Dhemaji, Baksa,
Nagaon, Kokrajhar, Dhubri, Sonitpur, Jorhat and Kamrup. The floods also badly hit domestic and wild animals in various sanctuaries and national parks including the world-famous Kaziranga National Park, where 18 rhinos and 135 wild animals died due to the havoc of the deluge. Kaziranga National Park Director Karmashree P. Sivakumar said that 172 wild animals have been rescued from floodwaters, even though over 95 per cent of the park remained inundated until July 23.

DIMAPUR: Political parties, students’ unions and various organisations have condemned the alleged assault on Dr. Atoka Wotsa, pathologist at the COVID lab Chümoukedima by some IRB personnel on the night of August 21. NPF: Naga People’s Front (NPF) central in a condemnation through its press bureau stated that, even though, the inquiry committee has been set up to probe the case, the NPF “demands a clear written explanation from the home minister, Y Patton as to why the police personnel have become a threat of the society and assurance to book the guilty immediately.” Pointing out that lackadaisical attitude of the PDA government clearly shows that there was no proper coordination between various government departments and machineries, the NPF stated that, the government of the day should “take full responsible for such brutally high-handedness incident” and the government should also assure the safety of the people. Expressing disbelief that the police personnel during this time of pandemic do not spare even the front line workers particularly the medical doctors on duty, the NPF questioned as to how the security of the public can be guaranteed under such circumstances. CNTC: Central Nagaland Tribes Council (CNTC) in a condemnation through its media cell stated that police personnel have to undergo lots of pressure and demands in their line of duty and encounter every type of personalities and characters. However, CNTC stated that, it was also a part of their duty to restrain, respect and have regard for human rights “instead of going berserk and start assaulting people wildly without any compunction.” CNTC expressed its appreciation on the prompt action
of the government in setting up an inquiry commission on the incident and hopes that befitting punishment be given to those found guilty so that it will set an exemplary action. DSC: Dimapur Sumi Council (DSC) in a condemnation by DSC chairman Kuhoi Zhimomi and general secretary, Tokuka H. Awomi demanded for a thorough investigation and exemplary action taken as per law against the culprit/s. Instead of showing gratitude towards the overburdened doctors, nurses and other frontline workers, the DSC stated that they are “meted with disrespect and inhumane way causing them not mental stress but also inflicting physical torture.” DSC further appreciates the state government in setting up an inquiry committee on the unfortunate incident and expects a fair judgement. KVC: Kitami Village Council (KVC) in a condemnation by chairman Kishepu Tsuqu and secretary, Kughakhu Tsuqu stated that such inhuman acts on the innocent doctor is purely barbarian and was intolerable. KVC further appealed and demanded the government to take stern action against the erring personnel and give immediate justice to the victim. SAH: Sümi Aphuyemi Hoho (SAH) in a condemnation by president Inavi Swu and general secretary Ghuzui Shohe stated that any citizen of the land was expected to be safe at the hand of the police personnel but instead of protecting and guiding the citizens at the death of the night, harassing the public was unfortunate and unacceptable. Hoho also appreciated the formation of the enquiry committee by the state government and requested the government to deliver justice as per the established laws at the earliest. NIDA: Nagaland in-service Doctors Association (NIDA) in
a condemnation by president Dr Ritu Thurr and secretary Dr Ahu Sekhose stated that the tolerance level of the association has reached its tipping point due to repeat of such abhorrent incidences in the recent COVID-19 times. NIDA further stated that exemplary action is immediately initiated by concerned authority as demanded by the NIDA unit, Dimapur. NIDA further stated that association will be compelled to resort to undesirable repercussive measures which will totally jeopardize the entire health services throughout the state. NIDA NHAK unit: Nagaland In-service Doctor’s Association (NIDA) Naga Hospital Authority Kohima (NHAK) unit in a condemnation by NIDA representative NHAK unit, Dr. Angto Phom extended support to the charter of demands placed before the authority concerned by the NIDA Dimapur unit which was further endorsed by NIDA president. NIDA NHAK unit further stated that it stands resolutely with any decision taken by NIDA executive body regarding future course of action on this matter till justice is delivered. KTCN: Kachari Tribal Council Nagaland (KTCN) in a condemnation by president Ramesh Hasnu and general secretary, Lakhi Mech requested the concerned authorities to go for transparent investigation of the case at the earliest without any bias to deliver justice to the victim and to prevent such incidences in the future. While the need of the hour was for the frontline workers to work hand in hand, the KTCN appealed one and all to coordinate and cooperate and thank the frontline workers for their selfless efforts in this fight against the pandemic. NSF: Naga Students’ Federation (NSF) in a condemnation by president Ninoto Awomi and
general secretary, Liremo R. Kikon has appealed to all the frontline workers for more co-ordinated efforts amongst the circle to ensure that such untoward incidents are averted in the near future. While acknowledging the yeomen service being rendered by the state police force, the NSF however stated that it was “one of incidents such as this that takes away the shine from their selfless sacrifices.” Federation also extended sincere appreciation towards the medical fraternity, in their sincere attempt to keep the people of the state safe from the deadly COVID-19. PSU: Puneboqa Student‘s Union (PSU) in a condemnation by president P. Viyiho Tsuqu stated that, each and every member of the law enforcing department has to know that they have responsibilities of not only maintaining law and order, but also of building trust of the fellow citizens of the state. PSU has urged the state government to take strict action against the erring personnel. ASTD: Ao Senso Telongjem Dimapur (ASTD) in a condemnation by president L.Wati Jamir and general secretary, K. Mar Lemtur expressed that it was most unfortunate to witness such incidents between the police personnel and medical fraternity especially during this hour of pandemic, when there was shortage of manpower and frontline worker in Dimapur district in general. ASTD appealed the concerned to initiate unbiased investigation against the erring personnel as per law and further urged all frontline workers to set aside this difference and work hand and hand in the fight against COVID19. ASTD also urged the concern authority/government of the day to depute more manpower into the medical department to combat the deadly COVID-19 pandemic.

OPINiON/EDITORIAL
Nagaland Post Vol. XXx NO. 260 Dimapur, TUESDAY, AUGUST 25, 2020
Congress in comatose state
T
here have been more write ups, discussions and speculations over the state that India’s oldest party-the Congress- finds itself today, then on how it is dealing with various issues. This is because the grand old party is still grappling with throwing up a viable alternative leaders while the top hierarchy do not seem to be on the same page over various matters that has deprived the party of a directional leadership. The thrashing on two consecutive Lok Sabha elections in 2014 and 2019 has only worsened the crisis. Of course, winning or losing is part of politics but for the Congress, whose leaders have been too used to being in power for several decades, being out of power is definitely taking its toll. Unfortunately, the party leadership appears to be in a comatose state and the courtiers expected to remain passively loyal and sycophantic. Many leaders in the Congress party are witnessing time flying away and realise that if this goes on then the remainder of their political careers are going to waste, since the Congress is unable to come out of a deep coma. Several veteran leaders have written a letter to Sonia Gandhi, demanding a full-time leadership at all levels, thereby simply saying that the Gandhi family is not giving its best to the party. They have also demanded elections to the Congress Working Committee, a way of saying they want a non-Gandhi. It may be recalled that former party spokesperson Sanjay Jha had written about the similar issues but was immediately sacked from his position and his party membership suspended. The latest development that has shaken the party is a letter by 23 senior leaders and heavyweights who have echoed the same sentiments. If the Congress feels pulled apart in two directions, the root of this dispute may well be tied to the Gandhi family itself. Sonia Gandhi remains the reluctant chief who was compelled to take the job. Even her son and heir apparent Rahul Gandhi has not proved his mettle as a politician who could lead the party. Rahul resigned following the second electoral drubbing in 2019 and has been sulking. Sonia had to take back the job but as interim president despite her health issues. According to a recent write up, the problem is not as much between the old guard (Ahmed Patel, Gehlot, Kamal Nath) versus new guard (Rahul brigade) but within the Gandhi family. Rahul wanted to put in some young leaders in positions (Jyotiraditya in Madhya Pradesh, Sachin Pilot in Rajasthan) but Sonia shot down the plans. According to the write up, Rahul felt it was no use being president if he could not have his way. Thus, his sulk from being active in party meetings and decision making. When Rahul Gandhi resigned as party president he indicated that a non-Gandhi should be chosen for the post. This was his way of sending a message on whether Congress could be run without the Gandhis. Sonia vetoed Rahul and became interim president and this will remain. According to observers, Rahul feels stifled by his mother. Sonia is a status quoits while Rahul wants to experiment and be allowed to fail and learn. The Congress can only come out of its present comatose state if the family comes down from its ivory tower and learns to listen to saner voices within instead of punishing those who dare to differ.
DailyDevotion The Spiritual Search What man is there among you who, if his son asks for bread, will give him a stone? —Matthew 7:9 The illustration of prayer that our Lord used here is one of a good child who is asking for something good. We talk about prayer as if God hears us regardless of what our relationship is to Him (see Matthew 5:45). Never say that it is not God’s will to give you what you ask. Don’t faint and give up, but find out the reason you have not received; increase the intensity of your search and examine the evidence. Is your relationship right with your spouse, your children, and your fellow students? Are you a “good child” in those relationships? Do you have to say to the Lord, “I have been irritable and cross, but I still want spiritual blessings”? You cannot receive and will have to do without them until you have the attitude of a “good child.” We mistake defiance for devotion, arguing with God instead of surrendering. We refuse to look at the evidence that clearly indicates where we are wrong. Have I been asking God to give me money for something I want, while refusing to pay someone what I owe him? Have I been asking God for liberty while I am withholding it from someone who belongs to me? Have I refused to forgive someone, and have I been unkind to that person? Have I been living as God’s child among my relatives and friends? (see Matthew 7:12). I am a child of God only by being born again, and as His child I am good only as I “walk in the light” (1 John 1:7). For most of us, prayer simply becomes some trivial religious expression, a matter of mystical and emotional fellowship with God. We are all good at producing spiritual fog that blinds our sight. But if we will search out and examine the evidence, we will see very clearly what is wrong— a friendship, an unpaid debt, or an improper attitude. There is no use praying unless we are living as children of God. Then Jesus says, regarding His children, “Everyone who asks receives…” (Matthew 7:8).

It is sad not to love, but it is much sadder not to be able to love. ~ Miguel de Unamuno
I
n the last two months three people, two working in a newspaper and one in a magazine, have savagely attacked the lakhs of animal feeders who have risked their own health to keep animals alive, and claimed that their feeding has alienated the whole of India. All three have stopped short of asking for them to be killed because they know that, while their ranting is harmless, any suggestion of violence will alienate most of the country. All three have this in common: they keep foreign pedigreed dogs. They should read the paper published in Harvard by Steven L Herman on the relationship between people and dogs in contemporary India. I am going to quote from it extensively. “The canine appears to have been thriving in India since the beginning of recorded time. Recent DNA testing has determined that all Indian dogs, as well as dog breeds from the rest of the world, are from the lineage of Canis lupus chanco, the ancient and unique Himalayan wolf of northwestern India” The Indian human’s relationship with dogs in India goes back to mythical times. They are the envoys of Yama. Yudhishtra of the Mahabharata refused to enter heaven without his dog and it turned out that the gods were testing him on his compassion quotient – and he passed with flying colours. “Early
Vedic literature show the dog had a far more intimate position in the household than beasts of burden or worshipped animals. The rock carvings at Bhimbetka, near Bhopal show a man walking a curly-tailed male dog on a leash.” “An interesting contemporary study is the Indian Pariah Dog (aka Indian Native Dog). For some cynologists a true Pariah, like wolves, must scavenge with a pack. In India, during the past eleven months of observation of hundreds of dogs referred to by locals as strays or Pariahs I have not seen any that congregate in packs and thus cannot be considered feral. Instead these dogs exhibit strong territorial behavior rarely tolerating more than one other dog on their turf. These dogs will “belong” to a village and are parasitic off scraps of food from the human population.” Which means that street dogs are not feral but very much part of the large Indian human community. “The majority of Indian city dwellers do not find the stray dog a nuisance. Among the poorest, bonding between children and stray puppies, both surviving on the streets, may partly explain a higher than average level of tolerance between scavengers of the human and canine varieties in India. While stray dogs are ignored in many places and suffer from a lack of proper veterinary treatment, it is heartening
Nagaland Post, Dimapur TUESDAY, AUGUST 25, 2020
Nothing is going to change it in a country with so much poverty and so many pressing social issues, there is a remarkable amount of volunteerism devoted to animal welfare among the middle and upper classes. In Jaipur, a concerted effort by animal welfare organizations in recent years to sterilize, vaccinate and protect stray dogs had resulted in no further cases of canine-to-human rabies transmission.” “The level of tolerance (for strays) is amazing and could be related to Hinduism,” says Dr. A.J.T. Johnsingh, retired dean of the Faculty of Wildlife Sciences of the Wildlife Institute of India. Dr. Johnsingh, presently a scientific advisor to WWF India, explains that because stray dogs have access to an enormous quantity of garbage in the cities, as long as this food supply is not reduced the number of dogs will not decrease” “The attitude of humans in India regarding dogs is something to which Dr. Amita Singh has given considerable thought. She is the Chairperson of the Centre for Study of Law and Governance at Jawa-
harlal Nehru University. Professor Singh states that there are three types of people in India when it comes to attitudes towards dogs. The first category is those who value dogs for companionship. They are especially evident among the elderly and the poor. “Even if they have hardly any food, they will share it with the dog,” she says. The second type is those who have affinity for dogs based on religious beliefs. The number of people in this category have expanded significantly in contemporary times with the growth of the Sai Baba religious movement, which has millions of followers. The influential guru preached protection of dogs and that if people feed dogs their sins will be transferred to the animal. The group’s iconography of Sai Baba shows him in the company of dogs, likely appropriated from the centuries-old iconography of Dattatreya, an incarnation of the divine trinity of Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva, still highly revered in western India. “There is a story told in the movement of one
devotee who was preparing food for Sai Baba and hits a dog with a stick who tries to eat the food intended for the guru,” recounts Dr. Singh. The guru does not appear for his meal and, later, when the man asks why Sai Baba missed his meal the leader replies that he came to eat but “you hit me with a stick.” The third type of dog lover is those trying to emulate India’s former colonial masters, the British, whose military leaders “always kept dogs.” But some observers, such as Dr. Singh, consider these modern-day emulators of the Raj, who exclusively prefer pedigreed dogs, to be “selfish because while they are nice to pet dogs, they are awful to dogs on the road and even advocate killing of strays. ” “There are remarkable attitudes concerning dogs among other elements of Indian society. The country is likely one of the few countries where “weddings” between humans and dogs takes place. These so-called marriages usually occur to reverse supposed curses placed on the human spouse. Recently a farm labourer in Tamil Nadu married Sevi, a four-year-old stray bitch, on the advice of his astrologer, to reverse a curse he incurred for stoning to death two dogs and hanging their bodies from a tree. The canine killer had suffered physical ailments, including partial paralysis and loss of hearing, since committing his
terrible act. There are also numerous cases of tribal girls in India being wed to dogs to cast off evil spells or prevent danger. The nature-worshipping Munda tribe marries off girls when their permanent teeth appear, to make them immune to animal attacks. A five-year-old girl of the tribe in Orissa was wed to a dog in 2005 to prevent her from being eaten by tigers. A nine-year-old girl from the pre-Aryan Santhal tribe near Calcutta was married in 2003 to a stray named Bacchan while 100 guests joyously danced and drank home-made liquor.” “From the mythical to the seemingly supernatural the bond between dog and human in India has stretched across millennia.” And nothing is going to change it. No matter how annoyed our pseudo western writers get and how keen they are to replace the Indian dog with the Irish Setter and the Pomeranian, this is not going to happen. And this lockdown has just shown that the movement to protect the Indian dog is increasing, not decreasing, in strength. Yes, there have been conflicts, there have been poisonings, some drunken men do beat animals when they cannot beat their wives. But overall, it is a battle that the compassionate are winning. Post-mortem
Emperical evidences of COVID-19 challenges in Dimapur context
F
or India Nation the pandemic Covid-19 was announced by Honorable Prime Minister on 24th March 2020. Lotha Baptist Church Dimapur Deacons Board decided in an emergency meeting resolved to stop congregational worship services on 22nd March 2020. Infact, it was a tough but right decision to be made because this nature of decision has never been in the History of our Church. My empirical evidence challenge started from 22nd March 2020 and still continuing till date. In this fight of Covid-19 journey is purely based on personal empirical evidence. First challenge: Covid-19 Pandemic is not a law and order problem, it’s a Medical, Health Emergencies. My intention of highlighting certain issues with police is not mean to blame them, but to be learned from mistake. My first encounter with Police was on 29th March 2020 that was Sunday. Since it was Sunday I went alone to Church for prayer. As soon as I reached home I received a call from Police station and the police officer asked me to come to Police station without informing the reason, immediately I rushed to the police station and inquired about the reason. He charged me why did I conduct worship service. So, I replied to him, who informed you? what evidence to you have to summon me in police station without proper investigation or evidence. After exchange of words I came back from there. And the above incident goes viral in social media. Some friends were insisting to write an FIR against the informer but in good faith I turn down their suggestion. I was mentally disturbed, being harassed without my fault. Second incident was while going for prayer and distribution of relief to the needy persons, we were stopped by police. I showed by own Covid-19 Identity Card but the policeman replied in a very sarcastic manner, “Heto card thori kina prathana koribole jai naki?” carrying this ID is not meant to go for prayer. I am quite sure he was also a Christian or a member in a particular Church, still then he acted as though he knew nothing about the value of prayer and service to mankind in this difficult time, where people suffer from many factors. But being trained police personal needs more politeness and diplomacy in dealing with others, who are also serving others without being paid anything to serve people.
Second challenges: Many civil societies, non-governmental organizations and many groups and individuals are actively engaged in the battle of Covid-19 but for the sake of space, let me concentrate on Churches participation in this challenge. My empirical studies confine in two levels; Internal and external participation of Churches. a) Internal: According to my observation, almost all the Churches in Dimapur have been actively helping their own members in various ways, inspite of Churches economic being badly hampered, the Churches in Dimapur are continuingly supporting their members, according to their need base. And yet, this pandemic Coivd-19 fight is still on. Perhaps Churches in Dimapur should come together as a team and consider this pandemic task as a new challenge in our approach towards mission to create a new outcome within our Mission strategy. b) External: In this regard there are two categories. One as a Church organization and the other, Leaders of the Churches. As Church organization, the involvement is external services to a larger group of people which is visible in terms of donation, relief work, support to administration, time to time encouraging others by way of prayer, counseling, etc. But my point is that the capacity in terms of economic and human power is second to none. Doing relief work to the needy persons occasionally, financial assistance to the government is well appreciated. But on the other hand, the expectation by the common people from the Churches could be more than what has been done. In such pandemic Covid-19 situation, the Churches can come under one roof and could work more meaningful in a general way to let the citizen of Dimapur feel the Holistic support by the Churches. This pandemic Covid-19 is not a burden but an opportunity to set an example to the common people that Churches really care and love God’s people. Surely if Churches continually support people, this act of kindness would certainly create a strong memory in the hearts of people for a long time. It is a wake up call to all the Churches. The other concern is, as leaders of Churches, we have been serving people, facing different kinds of situations make us qualify to deal with humans suffering and problems. So to
deal with many human problems Church leaders are also second to none. One of the ways to contain the spread of Covid-19 has to deal with lifestyle or human behaviors. Often regulation of SOP to the citizens will not be much helpful, unless, people change their behavior or lifestyle. Therefore, to educate the masses to change their behavior or lifestyle, as experienced leader in dealing human problems, our active involvement in this factor is mandatory demanded by the Covid-19 context. Church leaders should become role models to be impacting the community. So wake up call during these pandemic crises is how many Church leaders are actively serving the society? Just compare the service rendering by the frontline workers. All these days, they have been working day and night inspite of many criticism, discriminations and stigmatization they lay down their lives, taking all the risks. We the Church leaders are called to serve people in any situations, even up to death like our master Jesus. Giving life for the good news of God does not mean only in witnessing God’s word but by serving people in any situation. A Naga Contractor shared his involvement in Covid-19 from the day one till date he visited several places, helped many organizations and individuals spending some lakhs of rupees. For me, it is God given opportunity to serve people but not a burden. Let us commit once again to avail this privilege to serve God’s people. Third challenges: More than 20,000 returnees have already landed in our State and are still coming. Almost the returnees from different cities in India are engaged in different jobs. It is not only about their survivor but through their earning, at homes many parents are being supported by them. Once these young people were job holders but now they are jobless, even some parent’s survivors is at stake. Now the question is how will the Churches and Church leaders respond to this issue? Is this issue solely Government responsible? Do we have any concern for these returnees?. In order to respond to this challenge, the Churches and leaders should have a new dimension in our missionvision. Unless, the leaders of the Churches take up this challenge on priority with broad holistic approach, the Churches will have to face many social unrest. And
moreover, many souls will have to suffer. Fourth challenges:The impact of Covid-19 among the community at present, the seriousness is about the health issue. But the impact of Covid19 among the communities on social discriminations and stigmatizations would remain for a lifelong, unless the Church do something to heal this psychological breakdown or relationship barrier created by discrimination and stigmatization. Covid-19 may one day subside because it is health issue but physiological or mental issue will be there in the minds of those who are being victimized. This needs a healing process. The calling of Church leaders also mean to heal and create a strong relationship among the community under the principle of Kingdom of God. For this challenge, the Church leaders cannot remain silent. The need of the hour is that many Church leaders should become counselors not in the Church pul-
pit alone but should get involved in house to house ministry. In conclusion since the day one of Covid-19 lockdown was imposed till date as a Church worker, I have been supporting and serving people risking life, extending help to the needy people in any possible way from my side. To me, and my family, I understood that it is not a burden but an opportunity to serve those who are in need, knowing how much the Lord has blessed me and my family in these difficult times. Saint Paul says, “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith”. 2 Timothy 4:6. Lastly I pray for the Christian Leaders wherever you may be, that God’s favour be upon you, like “Gideon the Brave” in the Bible to fight for the needy in these difficult times when we are needed the most. Government mute on internet issue
Sir,
Through this column, I personally would like to thank you and your staff for bringing in the issue regarding terrible internet issue in Dimapur. Your paper has been covering the issue of poor internet connectivity, and many students are grateful for it. It however seems that our present government is mute on this scenario even after multiple publication and requests by general public, and specially the students, who have been affected the most. I therefore urge the government of Nagaland, under the leadership of Chief Minister, Rio, to kindly and personally look into the matter of poor and terrible internet connectivity in the state. Medemsoba Kichu, 4th Mile, Dimapur
Sir,
Frontline workers versus frontline workers?
Since the pandemic started, Nagaland has witnessed several occasions, where police personnel have mentally or physically abused other frontline workers. Nagaland is now witnessing, in what seems, a repeated “George Floyd” incident, whereby, state police personnel have taken unnecessary measures against doctors, in several scenarios. We are also tempted to think about the incident, where a Journalist was also beaten down by the police force. Police forces are appointed to maintain law and order, not mess with it or take law into their hands. Yes not all police personnel react the same, however, it is for those “selected few” that malign the name of the whole department. Justice should not be partial towards even the law protectors. It should be fair and just. Akai Konyak, Dimapur

SC declines plea for NEET abroad
NEW DELHI, AUG 24 (IANS): The Supreme Court on Monday declined a plea for directions to the Centre and the National Testing Agency (NTA) for setting up NEET exam centres abroad for the benefit of students in foreign countries in the backdrop of the coronavirus pandemic. A bench comprising Justices L Nageswara Rao, Hemant Gupta, and S Ravindra Bhat asked Solicitor General Tushar Mehta to discuss with ministries concerned whether students who wish to visit India to sit in the NEET exam could be accommodated on the Vande Bharat Mission flights. The court also asked Mehta to explore the possibility that aspirants based out of the Middle East countries were permitted to board such flights. The bench also noted that the incoming students are permitted to approach the state governments concerned for relaxations in quarantine periods. According to the rules, people arriving in India from abroad are required to undergo 14-day quarantine in the interest of public

health. The Supreme Court orally directed Mehta to inform the ministries concerned that these students may be allowed to come back to take the exam. Mehta contended before the bench that the issue could be taken care of, subject to quarantine requirements and that they establish that they were coming for the exam.
The top court told the petitioners’ counsel that he could ask his clients to plan their return in the backdrop of quarantine requirements. The counsel argued that many students abroad intended to sit in both the NEET and Joint Entrance Exams (JEE). The petitioners said that only 6-day gap between JEE (September 1-6)
and NEET exam (September 13) was also an issue. The petitioners had moved the apex court to challenge a Kerala High Court order to dismiss their plea to set up examination centres abroad, or postpone the exams due to the pandemic. The Centre has already decided not to postpone the NEET and JEE exams.
BJP asks Anna Hazare to join its movement
NEW DELHI, AUG 24 (PTI): Delhi BJP president Adesh Gupta on Monday wrote to social activist Anna Hazare, urging him to join his party’s “mass movement” against the government led by AAP, which he alleged was the “new name of social, political and economic corruption”. In his letter, Gupta alleged that the AAP government has demolished all parameters of “political purity” and also accused it of “planning” the northeast Delhi riots in February, which had left at least 53 people dead and around 200 injured. “The Aam Aadmi Party, which came to the government in the name of clean and fair politics, has demolished all the parameters of political purity,” Gupta wrote in his letter to Hazare. No immediate reaction on Gupta’s letter was available from the AAP. AAP has launched a sustained attack on the BJP, levelling allegations of corruption in the three municipal corporations ruled by the party and also in connection with the riots in the city.

He also inaugurated a blood donation camp organised at AIIMS in Jaitley’s memory and said that the late leader’s family members are serving society as he did. BJP’s growth and rise to power.” “He made a mark as a successful lawyer, seasoned parliamentarian and effective administrator. I offer my heartfelt tributes to him,” Singh said. A key BJP leader and a crucial member of the party’s brain trust for decades, Jaitley was an articulate champion of the saffron party’s policies and ideology, and his warm personality and affable manners won him friends across the political spectrum. THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, AUG 24 (PTI): The opposition Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) Monday moved a no-confidence motion against the Pinarayi Vijayan-led Left government in Kerala, raising a slew of allegations including the gold smuggling case. Congress legislator V D Satheeshan moved the motion, saying the Chief Minister’s office was “hijacked” by the gold smuggling gang. “While the Chief Minister was attending the press conference and saying that everything was fine with the government and was ready to face any probe, his former principal secretary was being questioned by investigating agencies for hours,” Satheeshan said. He said the ministers and the chief minister were trying to “put all the blame in the gold smuggling matter on the shoulders of suspended senior IAS officer and former IT Secretary M Sivashankar”. The state government has been facing severe criticism from the opposition Congress and the BJP, who alleged links of the gold smuggling case accused with the Chief Minister’s Office. At the military talks, the Indian Army has been strongly insisting that restoration of the status quo ante of April this year by China is the only way to resolve the row, according to government sources. There is a growing view in the Army that the Chinese military is not serious about the resolution of the border conflict as it is resorting to “back and forth” negotiations while the Indian side has very clearly conveyed about its position on the matter. Sources said notwithstanding the border row, India has been carrying on with the work on laying new roads in the Ladakh region besides developing other key infrastructure.
preparations to maintain its current strength of troops in all key areas in eastern Ladakh in the harsh winter months. Chief of Army Staff Gen MM Naravane has already conveyed to all the senior commanders of the Army, overseeing operation of the frontline formations along the LAC, to maintain a significantly high state of alertness to deal with any Chinese “misadventure”, the sources said. The Army is also in the process of procuring a number of weapons, ammunition and winter gears for the frontline troops, they added. The temperature in some of the high-altitude areas along the LAC drops to minus 25 degree celsius in the winter months. The tension between the two sides escalated manifold after the violent clashes in Galwan Valley on June 15 in which 20 Indian Army personnel were killed. The Chinese side also suffered casualties but it is yet to give out the details. According to an American intelligence report, the number of casualties on the Chinese side was 35.

“Our road construction is not in response to PLA infrastructure development but based on our requirements and those of our people,” said a source. The formal process of disengagement of troops began on July 6, a day after a nearly two-hour telephonic conversation between National Security Advisor Ajit Doval and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi on ways to bring down tensions in the area. However, the process has not moved forward since mid-July. NEW DELHI, AUG 24 (PTI): India’s armed forces are prepared to look at any military option if the extensive talks to restore status quo ante along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) did not yield any positive result, Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) Gen Bipin Rawat has said on the prolonged border standoff with China in eastern Ladakh. Gen Rawat, who has been part of the top military brass strategising on the Sino-India border issue, said a “whole of government” approach is being followed to peacefully resolve the row. The armed forces are always prepared for military actions if all efforts to restore status quo ante along the LAC don’t “fructify,” the CDS said when asked about the over three-month-long border row. Gen Rawat, who was the Chief of Army Staff from December 2016 to December 2019, said the transgressions take place along the LAC because of varying perceptions about it by the two countries. COVID-19 protocols, the Kerala Assembly convened for a day on Monday and passed the Finance Bill 2020-21, which could not be passed after the state budget in February as the House was adjourned sine die on March 13 due to the coronavirus scare. The opposition has been attacking the government on various issues, including the gold smuggling case and Life Mission housing project for the poor since the past few days. In the 140-member house, LDF has 91 members and UDF 45. A no-confidence motion against the government is being brought after 15 years. In 2005, then CPI(M) MLA Kodiyeri Balakrishnan had moved a motion alleging corruption against the Oommen Chandy govern-
ment. However, the UDF, is in aquagmire as the Jose K Mani faction of its ally Kerala Congress has decided to stay away from the motion owing to a factional feud. The Kerala Congress party has five members, three belonging to party chairman P J Joseph and two of Jose Mani faction. P C George, an independent member, has said he will vote for the motion. BJP has one member-O Rajagopal. The by-election to the Rajya Sabha seat which fell vacant after the death of sitting member 83-year-old M P Veerendra Kumar, a media baron and veteran socialist, on May 28, is progressing in the Assembly today. The session was to have been held on July 27, but was postponed due to the COVID-19 situation. A medical team conducted rapid antigen tests on the members early in the morning and social distancing in seating arrangements have also been ensured. However, visitors were not allowed for the session. Each member will have a separate seat for the session, and provided with a sanitiser, mask and a pair of gloves and those entering the assembly complex were subjected to thermal scanning.

China launches advanced warship for Pak BEIJING/ISLAMABAD, AUG 24 (PTI): China has launched first of the four advanced naval warships it is building for Pakistan, amid deepening economic and defence ties between the two all-weather allies. The launching ceremony for the first warship was held at the Hudong Zhonghua Shipyard in Shanghai on Sunday. Pakistan-China defence ties turn a new chapter with the launch of the first ship of Type-054 class frigate, Pakistan’s staterun APP news agency reported. The Type-054 class, equipped with the latest surface, subsurface, anti-air weapons, combat management system, and sensors will be one of the technologically advanced surface platforms of the Pakistan Navy fleet, the report said. Pakistan signed a contract with the China Shipbuilding Trading Company Ltd. (CSTC) for the delivery of two Type-054 A/P frigates in 2017. Last year, the Chinese official media reported that under a major

Wang Yi and his Pakistani counterpart Shah Mahmood Qureshi held at the Chinese holiday resort of Hainan on August 21. Meanwhile in Islamabad, Foreign Minister Qureshi said on Monday that China and Pakistan were strategic partners. He said the cooperative rela-
tionship between Pakistan and China was an answer to objections regarding the ambitious USD 60 billion China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC). Addressing the media on his return from China, Qureshi said Pakistan and China were pursuing the project and its pace of
implementation would increase and it would benefit the entire region. The CPEC, which connects Gwadar Port in Pakistan’s Balochistan with China’s Xinjiang province, is the flagship project of China’s ambitious multibillion-dollar Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). The CPEC is a collection of infrastructure and other projects under construction throughout Pakistan since 2013. Originally valued at USD 46 billion, the projects were worth USD 62 billion as of 2017. India has protested to China over the CPEC as it is being laid through Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. The BRI was launched by Chinese President Xi Jinping when he came to power in 2013. It aims to link Southeast Asia, Central Asia, the Gulf region, Africa and Europe with a network of land and sea routes. It is seen as an attempt by China to further its influence abroad with infrastructure projects funded by Chinese investments all over the world.
US allows emergency use of blood plasma treatment for Covid patients WASHINGTON, AUG 24 (AGENCIES): The US health watchdog has given emergency authorisation for the use of blood plasma to treat coronavirus patients in the country, saying the benefits of the treatment outweighed any potential risks. The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) said on Sunday that over 70,000 patients in the country had been treated with convalescent plasma, which is made using the blood of people who have recovered from coronavirus infections. President Donald Trump welcomed the move by the FDA on the eve of the four-day Republican National Convention which will renominate him to be the party’s candidate in the November 3 presidential election. “Today I am pleased to make a truly historic announcement in our battle against the China virus that will save countless lives,” Trump said at a White House briefing, referring to the coronavirus that causes
Covid-19. “Today’s action will dramatically increase access to this treatment,” he said, a day after he accused the FDA of impeding the rollout of vaccines and therapeutics for political reasons. In a tweet on Saturday, Trump said “the deep state, or whoever, at the FDA is making it very difficult for drug companies to get people in order to test the vaccines and therapeutics. “Obviously, they are hoping to delay the answer until after [the US presidential election],” he said. The FDA said in a news release said it has issued an emergency use authorisation (EUA) for investigational convalescent plasma for the treatment of COVID-19 in hospitalised patients as part of the agency’s ongoing efforts to fight COVID-19. Based on scientific evidence available, the FDA concluded, that this product may be effective in treating COVID-19 and that the “known and potential benefits of the product outweigh the known and potential
risks of the product.” More than 176,000 people have died from coronavirus since the start of the outbreak in the US, according to a tally by Johns Hopkins University. Nearly 5.7 million cases have also been confirmed nationwide, making America the worsthit country in the world after the disease emerged in the central Chinese city of Wuhan last year. “The FDA’s emergency authorisation for convalescent plasma is a milestone achievement in President Trump’s efforts to save lives from COVID-19,” said Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar. “Our work on convalescent plasma has delivered broader access to the product than is available in any other country and reached more than 70,000 American patients so far. We are deeply grateful to Americans who have already donated and encourage individuals who have recovered from COVID-19 to consider donating convalescent plasma,” Azar said.
Twin bombings kill 15, wound 172 countries engaging with global COVID vaccine plan: WHO scores in Philippine south GENEVA/LONDON, AUG 24 (AGENCIES): Some 172 countries are engaging with the COVAX facility designed to ensure equitable access to COVID19 vaccines, the World Health Organization said on Monday, but more funding is needed and countries need now to make binding commitments. candidate COVID-19 vaccines and its aim is to secure supplies of and deliver 2 billion doses across countries that sign up by the end of 2021. “Initially, when there will be limited supply (of COVID-19 vaccines), it’s important to provide the vaccine to those at highest risk around the globe,” Tedros said.

Personnel of Security Force at the site in the aftermath of an explosion in Jolo Island, Sulu province, Philippines August 24.
M A N I L A , AU G 2 4 (AGENCIES): Twin blasts including a suicide bombing killed 15 people and wounded 75 others on a restive southern Philippine island on Monday, among them security forces and civilians, with Islamist militants suspected of being behind the attack. The bombs went off within an hour of each other in the main town on Jolo island, a stronghold of Abu Sayyaf, an Islamic State-linked group that has intensified its campaign in recent years through the use of suicide bombers. There was no immediate claim of responsibility for what was the biggest attack of its kind in the southern Philippines since January 2019, when a double suicide bombing at a Jolo church killed more than
20 people and wounded over 100. The military said the first blast happened around noon on Monday, when a homemade bomb in a motorcycle was triggered close to two parked army trucks, killing soldiers and civilians. As police and army surveyed the scene, a suicide bomber tried to breach a cordon and detonated her device, killing herself and several others. In total, eight members of the security forces, six civilians and the bomber were killed and 27 security personnel and 48 civilians were wounded in the attacks on Jolo, one of a chain of mainly Muslim islands in the southwest of the majority Roman Catholic country. “We condemn in the strongest possible terms
the explosion incidents in Jolo,” presidential spokesman Harry Roque said. “Authorities are now conducting an investigation, which includes identifying individuals or groups behind these dastardly attacks.” The troops were among hundreds from a special infantry division created by President Rodrigo Duterte to destroy Abu Sayyaf, a group notorious for banditry, piracy and kidnap-for-ransom and countless attacks on civilian and military targets. Monday’s incident was one of at least six suicide bombings in the past three years, a mode of attack previously rare in the Philippines, despite decades of separatist conflict that has given rise to Islamist sentiments.

Bayern win 6th Champions League title
Bayern Munich players celebrate with the trophy after defeating Paris Saint-Germain 1-0 in the Champions League final at the Estadio da Luz in Lisbon.
Lisbon, Aug 24 (IANS): After a historic season, Bayern Munich defeated Paris Saint-Germain 1-0 at the Estadio da Luz and crowned its impressive trajectory with the sixth UEFA Champions League title. On the pitch on Sunday, the two coaches made changes in relation to the last game, with the Bavarian Hansi Flick going against expectations and selecting Kingsley Coman,
who came from the PSG academy, in place of Ivan Perisic, reports Xinhua news agency. And as in a script worthy of the best films, it was precisely the French striker who was the executioner of the team that formed him for football with the title goal in the 14th minute of the second half with an accurate header after Joshua Kimmich cross. Before that, the game started a lot studied in the first min-
utes, with the two teams analysing the opponent, looking for the attack with great care, without taking risks until the first 15 minutes of the game. From there, what was seen was Bayern with greater possession of the ball and total control of the midfield against a PSG depending on long balls raised to the offensive sector to exploit any mistake by Bayern through the individual talent of their
three front men: Neymar Jr, Kylian Mbappe, and Angel Di Maria. The Frenchmen’s best chance was in the 17thminute of the first half, with Neymar receiving the ball from Mbappe on the left side and hitting twice for the goal, for two great saves by goalkeeper Manuel Neuer. T h e B ava r i a n r e sponse came strong after 21 minutes when Robert Lewandowski received his
back inside the area, spun on his own body and sent the ball over Keylor Navas’ crossbar. From there, the two teams alternated attacks without real danger to the opposing goal and the first half ended with the Bayern players trying to influence the referee for a penalty, however, unlike the 1975 final, the referee refused to be swayed by the Bavarians. Bayern’s dominance intensified at the start of the second half until, on 14 minutes, ex-PSG Kingsley Coman headed in, defining the final score. Bayern Munich still had a few more chances to extend the score, but all were contained by the defense led by defender Thiago Silva. PSG exchanged a few pieces and managed to create goal chances - all of them drowned out by Neuer, who made a game to go down in history. But the destination was already sealed and, after five minutes of extratime, the party of the Germans from Bayern Munich started by raising their sixth “eared”, being the first UEFA Champions League earner to win all the matches of the biggest European club tournament.
Chelsea close on Havertz, Chilwell and Silva deals
Kai Havertz
Ben Chilwell
Thiago Silva
L o n d o n, Au g 2 4 (Agencies): Chelsea are close to agreeing deals to sign Bayer Leverkusen midfielder Kai Havertz, Leicester left-back Ben Chilwell and former Paris Saint-Germain captain Thiago Silva. Havertz has received interest from some of the biggest clubs in Europe but is now set to move to Stamford Bridge, with Chelsea close to concluding a deal with Leverkusen that could be worth up to £90m. The Blues are also likely to add Chilwell to their ranks, with talks between them and Leicester
continuing on Monday. The England international is understood to be keen on the move and a source has told Sky Sports News that the deal is “almost there”. While 21-year-old Havertz and 23-year-old Chilwell would add youth to Frank Lampard’s squad, Thiago Silva would provide some much needed experience in defence. Chelsea conceded 54 Premier League goals last season - more than any other side in the top half of the table - and 35-year-old Silva would be expected to help rectify the problem. Silva is available on
a free transfer after leaving PSG. His eight-year stay in the French capital came to an end on Sunday night with defeat to Bayern Munich in the Champions League final. Lampard is in the process of overhauling his Chelsea side following his first season in charge, in which he led the club to fourth place in the Premier League and the FA Cup final. He has already added Hakim Ziyech from Ajax and Timo Werner from RB Leipzig for a combined £83m and Havertz, Chilwell and Silva now look set to follow.
set for AFC Western & Southern Open: Pliskova, Kenin crash out ‘Messi would be welcome at PSG’ VAR Champions
Paris, Aug 24 (Agencies): Paris St Germain manager Thomas Tuchel says Lionel Messi would be welcome at the club if he ever decided to leave Barcelona but he does not expect the Argentine forward to do so. Messi, who joined Barcelona aged 13, has scored a record 634 goals for the club in 730 games and is also their most decorated player with 33 trophies but the 33-year-old is into the final year of his contract at the club. Reports in the Spanish media have cast doubts about his future at the club after a disappointing season that culminated in an 8-2 Champions League humiliation by Bayern Munich in the quarter-finals this month. “He’s very welcome. What coach says no to Messi?” Tuchel told BT Sport after his side lost 1-0 to Bayern in the Champions League final on Sunday. “I think Messi finishes his career in Barcelona. He’s Mr Barcelona. Tuchel said the club would talk over their potential signing targets and that they

demanding without any breaks. We need to build a strong squad. We decided not to talk about transfers in this period. We’ll sit together in the next days.” The 2019-20 French Ligue 1 season was cancelled in March amid the COVID-19 pandemic and the new campaign kicked off over the weekend.
Kuala Lumpur, Aug 24 (IANS): The Video Assistant Referee (VAR) system will be used from the quarter-final stage of the 2020 AFC Champions League, Asia’s football governing body said on Monday. “The Asian Football Confederation’s (AFC) commitment to ensure Asian refereeing continues to set new benchmarks was further underlined after it confirmed the implementation of VAR system from the quarterfinal stage of the 2020 AFC Champions League ,” a statement on AFC’s official website said. Having organised numerous VAR courses, the AFC has a proven track record in the implementation of the VAR system which has been endorsed by both FIFA and the IFAB. Additionally, to further strengthen the AFC’s capabilities in the VAR system application in the AFC Champions League, a virtual AFC VAR Information Officer (VIO) Workshop 2020 will be organised on Wednesday to ensure VIOs are well informed on the latest VAR developments.
Karolina Pliskova
N e w Yo r k , Au g 24 (Agencies): Topseeded Karolina Pliskova and No 2 Sofia Kenin crashed out of the Western & Southern Open on Sunday, falling in their opening matches at the National Tennis Center in New York. Russia’s Veronika Kudermetova, ranked 41st in the world, toppled world number three Pliskova of Czech Republic 7-5, 6-4 in their second-round clash. France’s Alize Cornet notched her first win over a
top-five player in two years when she shocked Australian Open champion Kenin 6-1, 7-6 (9/7) to reach the round of 16. Kudermetova, who labored to a three-set firstround victory over Australian Ajla Tomljanovic on Saturday, rallied from a 1-4 deficit in the first set, and reeled off the last three games of the match to score the upset. Olympic flame to go on display next month T OK Y O , A u g 2 4 (Agencies): The Olympic flame will go on display at the Japanese Olympic Museum from September 1, the Japanese Olympic Committee (JOC) announced on Monday. The flame was last seen in Fukushima after the torch relay was cancelled following its arrival from Greece but before it could start on the planned tour of Japan after the decision to postpone the Games in March due to the new coronavirus pandemic. With the Olympics postponed until 2021, organisers had been discussing how best to store and present the Olympic flame whilst in Japan. They have chosen to display the flame at the JOC museum which is near the National Stadium purpose-built for the Games. To limit crowds gathering to view the flame there will be a reservation system with a designated
date and time. There will also be a one-way viewing route to avoid unnecessary contact between members of the public. The flame will be on display from September 1-November 1. Neither the JOC nor Tokyo 2020 organisers have said where the flame will be located after that.
