WC, NNPGs hits out at Naga Hoho DIMAPUR, AUG 6 (NPN): Launching a no holds barred attack on the Naga Hoho (NH), the Working Committee of Naga National Political Groups (WC, NNPGs) Thursday said NH has been “reduced to a relic with little or no hope of being revived.” WC, NNPGs through its media cell said that the “epidemic proportion of indiscipline” has rendered NH “irreparable and irrelevant.” WC said that the recent “insidious, prejudiced and incoherent” press statements emanating in the name of Naga Hoho revealed that “the seal, letterhead and the very soul of Naga Hoho has been sold and surrendered completely.” WC said it was “extremely disturbed” by the manner in which

the “good name” of Naga Hoho was being “misused by a handful of disillusioned men driven by personal ambitions.” Initially, NH was for all and never for few, WC said, adding that the hoho was not meant to be “a mouthpiece of one tribe, community or organisation.” WC said that the NH founders wanted the hoho to be the cynosure of all eyes, drawing attention of all Nagas in matters of Naga history, identity and political struggle. WC, however, asserted that there had never been a mass based organisation in recent memory that “degenerated, rot, decayed and died as quickly as the Naga Hoho.” It alleged that “a gang of covetous men” have destroyed the foundation and tarnished the great vision of the founders of the NH. Arunachal Pradesh now has 642 active cases, while 1,210 people have recovered from the disease and three died of it. The Capital Complex region, comprising Itanagar, Naharlagun, Nirjuli and Banderdewa areas, has the highest number of active COVID-19 cases at 165, followed by Changlang (150), Namsai (49), East Siang (46), East Kameng (40) and Tirap (32), the official said. Arunachal Pradesh witnessed a spurt in novel coronavirus cases after the residents of the state started returning from other parts of the country during the nationwide lockdown. The state government has so far tested 95,983 samples for COVID-19, Jampa said.

tendent of Police, Mugdhajyoti Dev Mahanta, has also been camping at the spot since Wednesday evening. The clashes broke out when the bike-borne activists were on their way to a temple at Bhora Singori, playing loud music and mouthing slogans. A senior official said locals objected to the booming music and questioned the presence of such a large gathering amid the COVID-19 pandemic, leading to strife. Sonitpur District Deputy Commissioner Manvendra Pratap Singh’s vehicle was vandalised when he reached the spot shortly after the incident, the official said. “To control the situation, which turned into a communal clash, police first lathicharged and then fired in the air. Additional forces were deployed after many bikes and other vehicles were torched... The activists did not have any permission for the procession,” Singh had said on Wednesday.

29 security men test COVID positive in Mizoram Aizawl, Aug 6 (PTI): Thirty-three people, including 29 security personnel, have tested positive for COVID-19 in Mizoram in the last 24 hours, taking the state’s tally to 537, a Health Department official said on Thursday. Of the fresh cases, 28 were reported from Aizawl district, two from Champhai and one each from Lunglei, Kolasib and Saitual, he said. “Twenty-nine security personnel are among the fresh patients. A nurse, who has been taking care of coronavirus patients at Zoram Medical College (ZMC), has also tested positive for the disease,” the official said. Mizoram now has 251 active COVID-19 patients, while 286 people have recovered from the disease. The recovery rate in the state stands at 53.25 per cent, the official said, adding that one patient, who has migrated to Assam, is not included in the Mizoram’s COVID19 tally. A total of 22,175 samples have been tested for the coronavirus infection till Wednesday, he said.

Bail of 4 COVID-19 patients accused of spitting on doctor cancelled

Agarta l a , Au g 6 (PTI): Four COVID-19 patients, accused of spitting on a doctor at a medical facility in Tripura, surrendered before police on Thursday after their interim bail was cancelled by the high court, officials said. The accused persons surrendered before the officer-in-charge of the New Capital Complex police station, they said. Accordingly, they were produced before the chief judicial magistrate of West Tripura, pleading for test identification (TI) parade with seven days of police remand, a senior officer said. The court after hearing the arguments kept the verdict reserve till the last report came in. We will do whatever direction is given by the magistrate,” he said. T h e Tr i p u r a H i g h Court took a serious note of granting of the interim bail to the four accused. Rejecting the bail granted by a lower court, Justice Arindam Lodh on Wednesday asked the accused persons to surrender.

Pregnant woman dies after hospital refuses admission

Correspondent

IMPHAL, Aug 6: Barely three days after Manipur chief minister N Biren Singh denied refusal by hospitals to admit non-COVID19 patients, a 20 year-old pregnant woman died on Thursday, allegedly after hospitals refused to admit her for delivery. The alleged medical negligence on the part of the hospitals prompted the state government to issue an order directing all government and private hospitals to attend to all patients who reach their facility without fail. The state government has also ordered an enquiry into the incident leading to the death of the pregnant woman. The pregnant woman died at the entrance of Shija hospital, a private healthcare facility where her family knocked for medical help as their last option around 4 am on Thursday. Family members of the deceased woman, Kachakna Kamei (20) from Puichi village of Noney district had earlier rushed her to at least five hospitals including government and private hospitals. As stated by her husband, Roshan Balang, she was first admitted at Senapati district hospital around 2pm on Wednesday from where she was referred to a hospital with better facility around 10.30 pm as her case was a critical. On the advice of the

doctors, she was brought to Imphal by a hired private vehicle and rushed her to JNIMS hospital, one of the two biggest state run hospitals in Imphal. They reached JNIMS hospital around 12.30 am. The hospital staff however refused to attend to her and demanded for a COVID-19 negative test result despite repeated pleas on the need for emergency help. “In a rare inhumane act of cruelty, the nurses who know the danger more than anybody else refused to give her entry saying there is no doctor to treat her,” Balang alleged. Having little knowledge of hospitals in Imphal, the family members approached one young man working in a pharmacy near the JNIMS hospital who readily extended his help to rush the pregnant woman to RIMS hospital, Imphal. Hospital staff at RIMS also refused to admit her and demanded COVID-19 negative test results. The helpless family members came out of the hospital campus and tried their luck at Imphal hospital, a private hospital located not so far away from the RIMS hospital. When the hospital staff refused to admit her there too, they tried their luck at two other private hospitals in Imphal area where all of them denied admission despite knowing the critical condition of the woman.

As a last resort, they went to Shija hospital in the outskirts of Imphal city where she breathed her last around 4 am at the entrance of the emergency ward of the hospital and before they could approach the hospital staff for medical help, the husband said. “We came out of the hospital with the lifeless body of my wife without entering the casualty ward and without even approaching the hospital staff,” Balang wept. This is not the first case of deaths of patients allegedly due to refusal on the part of the hospitals to admit for medical treatment. Deaths of as many as three patients after hospitals refused to admit had been reported in the state in the last few days since many doctors, nurses and hospital staff contracted COVID-19 virus while treating patients. The latest one being death of a patient from Lilong of Thoubal district at the gate of JNIMS hospital, Imphal where she rushed to as a last resort after other hospitals refused to admit her. On August 3 last, chief minister N Biren Singh denied allegations of hospitals refusing to admit non-COVID-19 patients for treatment.

The high court directed the lower court to issue an arrest warrant if they dont surrender within the next two days. West Tripura District Surveillance Officer Dr Sangita Chakraborty went to the Covid Care Centre set up at the Bhagat Singh Youth Hostel on July 24 to admit five women with newborn babies when a group of patients said they would not allow any new admission, alleging that the facility had reached full occupancy, according to police. When doctors at the centre tried to convince the patients, they alleg-

edly abused and spat at Chakraborty and also threatened to infect her with coronavirus, police said. The four were earlier arrested based on an FIR lodged by the Director of Health Services at the New Capital Complex police station. On Tuesday, judicial magistrate Sanjan Lal Tripura granted interim bail to the accused persons till August 29 on furnishing of bail bond of Rs 30,000 each with one surety of like amount by August 10 with the condition that they will co-operate with the investigation.

Mnp extends complete lockdown till Aug 15 Correspondent IMPHAL, Aug 6: Manipur has extended complete lockdown in the entire state till August 15 as new infections of COVID-19 continue to be detected amongst people with no history of travel outside the state. The entire state has been under complete lockdown since July 23 after local transmission started around the middle of July. The state government had re-imposed the complete lockdown for one week, that is, till July 30. However, it was further extended till Thursday ( August 6). The decision to extend the lockdown till August 15 was taken in a cabinet meeting convened by chief minister N Biren Singh on Thursday evening. After thoroughly reviewing soaring cases of infections and the mode of spread amongst the locals K Y M C

with no history of travel outside the state, the cabinet decided to extend the complete lockdown, an official source said. State chief secretary Dr Rajesh Kumar who is also the chairperson of the State Executive Committee of the State Disaster Management Authority has also issued an order on the extension of the lockdown. For the enforcement of the extended complete lockdown, deputy commissioners of all the districts were directed to issue order imposing curfew in their respective districts Meanwhile, a 15-yearold boy from Bishnupur died at RIMS hospital due to COVID-29 today, taking the death toll to the pandemic in the state to eight. The boy was infectedwhile being treated at the hospital. He was treated in the hospital for the last around two months after

kidney failure. He tested positive after the doctor attending to him was first infected by the virus. The doctor was among around 36 staff including doctors and nurses infected by the disease. Two family members of the deceased boy who attended him at the hospital also tested positive. However, his mother who also attended him in the hospital tested negative, hospital sources said. Following the death of the boy and two members of his family testing positive, Bishnupur district administration has sealed the village where the boy hailed from and declared it a containment zone. On the other hand, of the 124 new COVID-19 positive cases confirmed today in the state, nine were personnel of the Central security forces and 94 of them were locally transmitted cases. K Y M C

No Win Situation

ver four months after the nationwide total lockdown was imposed, India has been gone into gradual unlock modes to get back on track to the ‘new normal’. Roads, and even the skies, have been busy for the last days since restrictions started to ease. Many businesses and workplaces are already open, construction has re-started, markets are crowded and parks are filling up. Soon, hotels, restaurants, malls, places of worship, schools and colleges will also reopen. India began to ease lockdown through unlock1.0 (June 8) no movement of people except those involved in essential activities, anywhere in India between 9 pm to 5 am., unlock2.0 (July 1) more domestic flights allowed to operate and movement of individuals will remained prohibited from 10 pm to 5 am across the country. Unlock 3.0(From August 5) has allowed opening of malls, shopping complexes and market places in non-containment zones and inter-state travel without restrictions. However, the central government has also given authority to state governments to assess the spread of coronavirus and formulate policies accordingly. In line with this, several states in the country have decided to continue strict lockdown till August 31 and have imposed travel restrictions. In the last two months, India has turned stadia, schools and even train coaches into quarantine centres, added and expanded Covid-19 wards in hospitals, and ramped up testing as well as production of protective gear. While grave challenges remain and shortages persist of almost all items, the consensus seems to be that the government got all the time it wanted. India made global headlines not for its caseload but for its botched handling of the lockdown - millions of informal workers, largely migrants, were left jobless overnight. Scared and unsure, many tried to return home, often desperate enough to walk, cycle or hitchhike across hundreds of kilometres. Beyond a point, it’s hard to sustain a lockdown that has gone on for so long - economically, socially and psychologically. India’s lockdown came at a huge cost, especially since so many of its people live on a daily wage or close to it. It put food supply chains at risk, cost millions their livelihood, and throttled every kind of business - from car manufacturers to high-end fashion to the corner shop selling tobacco. As the economy sputtered and unemployment rose, India’s growth forecast tumbled to a 30-year-low. Perhaps the choice - between a virus that didn’t appear to be wreaking havoc yet, and a lockdown that certainly was - seemed obvious to the government. And worse, despite lockdown the pandemic continues to rage. When India went into lockdown on March 24, it had reported 519 confirmed cases and 10 deaths. Now,the tally has reached 20, 22,019 with 40,699 deaths as on August 6,2020 . Dr Jacob John an internationally renowned virologist, like several other experts, also predicted a peak in July or August, and believes the country is reopening so quickly because the “government realised the futility of such leaky lockdowns”. The discomforting fact is that the virus will continue to infect more people but the concern should be on those most vulnerable like the aged above 60 those below 10 and those with serious health issues like diabetes, heart problems, kidney or liver diseases etc. Only a vaccine and herd immunity can eventually stop the virus.

DailyDevotion The Cross in Prayer In that day you will ask in My name… —John 16:26 We too often think of the Cross of Christ as something we have to get through, yet we get through for the purpose of getting into it. The Cross represents only one thing for us— complete, entire, absolute identification with the Lord Jesus Christ— and there is nothing in which this identification is more real to us than in prayer. “Your Father knows the things you have need of before you ask Him” (Matthew 6:8). Then why should we ask? The point of prayer is not to get answers from God, but to have perfect and complete oneness with Him. If we pray only because we want answers, we will become irritated and angry with God. We receive an answer every time we pray, but it does not always come in the way we expect, and our spiritual irritation shows our refusal to identify ourselves truly with our Lord in prayer. We are not here to prove that God answers prayer, but to be living trophies of God’s grace. “…I do not say to you that I shall pray the Father for you; for the Father Himself loves you…” (John 16:26-27). Have you reached such a level of intimacy with God that the only thing that can account for your prayer life is that it has become one with the prayer life of Jesus Christ? Has our Lord exchanged your life with His vital life? If so, then “in that day” you will be so closely identified with Jesus that there will be no distinction. When prayer seems to be unanswered, beware of trying to place the blame on someone else. That is always a trap of Satan. When you seem to have no answer, there is always a reason— God uses these times to give you deep personal instruction, and it is not for anyone else but you.

Restructure, revamp or remain irrelevant: WC, NNPGS to Naga Hoho

he insidious, prejudiced and incoherent press statements emanating in the name of Naga Hoho (NH) in recent times reveal that the seal, letterhead and the very soul of Naga Hoho has been sold and surrendered completely. Nagas are free spirited people and NH’s ignorance of reality, bankruptcy of purpose and vision is shocking. This is why the Naga tribes abandoned it one after the other. Without ENPO, NTC, CNTC and NGBF, Naga Hoho has no centre of gravity and disbands itself. Its sorry existence and paid activities shrink by the day! The WC, NNPGs is extremely disturbed by the manner in which the good name of Naga Hoho is being misused by a handful of disillusioned men driven by personal ambitions. Initially, NH was for all and never for few. It was not meant to be a mouthpiece of one tribe, community or organisation. The founders of the Naga Hoho wanted it to be the cynosure of all eyes, drawing attention of all Nagas in matters of Naga history, identity and political struggle. Alas! Never has there been a mass based organisation in recent memory that degenerated, rot, decayed and died as quickly as the Naga Hoho. A gang of covetous men have destroyed the foundation and tarnished

I

the great vision of the founders of the NH. Naga Hoho, if it really exists, ought to peruse through “Agreed Position” signed between GOI and WC, NNPGs on 17th Nov. 2017. With due respect to all past agreements and accords, the “Agreed Position” or “Preamble Agreement” as it is also referred to, is the only historical document whose contents strikingly resonates the very comforting words spoken and assured by Mahatma Gandhi, the father of the Indian Nation, to NNC leaders at Bhangi Colony, New Delhi in 1947. WC and the GOI went a step further and mutually agreed on the, “...Political and historical rights of the Nagas to self determine their future in consonance with their distinct identity...” Yet, the Naga Hoho could not find any political significance in this historic GOI/WC declaration! The painful reality is that NH has been reduced to a relic with little or no hope of being revived. The epidemic proportion of indiscipline has rendered it irreparable and irrelevant. Since 2017, in the three years of intensive rounds of political negotiations between the GOI and WC, the Naga tribal hohos, legislators, intellectuals, concerned senior members of Naga society etc. have been briefed and

also status paper presented. There have been no negative feedback from any quarter. All sections of our people have been receptive of the roadmap towards solution. Neighbouring communities have been reconnected and briefed as well. The Naga Hoho may not be aware since it is inside a cocoon. With a little sense of dignity and responsibility, the members may go through it and grasp the reality. Naga Hoho President Mr. H. K Zhimomi, a bonafide Sumi was directed by Sumi Hoho, the apex Sumi tribal body, to disassociate from the NH since the Sumi Hoho is not affiliated with the organisation. He went against his own tribe and crowned himself the Naga Hoho president. For this he was excommunicated for six years, implying he is an outcast in the eyes of Sumi people. Despite this glaring ineligibility Mr. H.K Zhimomi and few of his colleagues continue to seek misplaced glory using the platform of Naga Hoho oblivious to the fact that today the attention of the Naga tribes have shifted towards a comprehensive social and political unity outside the Naga Hoho. Naga tradition is clear that excommunicated members cannot represent even a village let alone representating Nagas. If the remnant Naga Hoho desires to comment

on the current Indo-Naga dialogue, it necessitates them seeking the advice and opinion of WC, NNPGs beside others. Simply parroting someone’s lines makes an organisation an object of ridicule. Naga Hoho is reminded that by mutual agreement and consent, since Oct. 31st, 2019, all formal negotiations with both IM and WC ended. This status quo is accepted whereby dialogue process and finalization of negotiated matters continue to this day. The WC, NNPGs is of the opinion that Mr. R.N Ravi, GoI Interlocutor in the Indo-Naga political dialogue has exhibited serious concern and commitment with practical touch. Past interlocutors and negotiators, in mutual comfort zone, indulged in innuendos and political gymnastics with routine hyperboles and hypothetical assumptions to sedate the Naga people. As years ran their course it became an alibi, stale and redundant. It was a deliberate ploy to dwell more on impossibilities rather than possibilities which has left the Nagas feeling betrayed. For a change, having understood the genesis of Indo-Naga conflict, new interlocutor Mr. R.N Ravi redefined the dynamics, looked straight in the eye, met Naga civil societies, listened to tribes and put pen to paper. n the name of the lord Jesus Christ, good tidings and regards to all the Nagas. We are grateful for this opportunity and would like to indulgence of all Nagas in hearing our humble submission. From the genesis of the Naga revolutionary movement, we, the Nagas on the east side of the forceful drawn boundary line, have always shouldered our responsibilities through thick and thin. Due to our areas being the staging base of Naga movement, we have borne the full brunt of unimaginable hardships and atrocities by the occupational force, yet with unabated hope and faith sovereign Nagaland, we have struggled in unison with an indomitable spirit with god as our only protector and refuge. Our sense of duty and commitment to our nation has never wavered despite the odds stacked against us. We have gone through trial by fire and attained martyrdom like any other Nagas in our struggle to attain our inherently sovereign political rights. We would like to clearly place on record that we do not identify ourselves on the basis of the forcefully drawn boundary line. Despite, being on the east side of the border like many other Naga tribes such as Konyak, Thangkhul, Khiamniungans, Makury, Puchury, Wancho are strewn across on the other side of the unrecognised border. Of all the people, Mr.

Yung Aung with his biological roots and inheritance in new Changlang, Changlang dist of the so called state of Arunachal Pradesh should know better than to accuse and rant about east-west division. We don’t ascribe to this ludicrously fallacious view, so our humble request to Mr Yung Aung would be to kindly desist from publishing or harbouring his imaginary ideas of an east west divide. Our better conscious would not allow us to follow down the ruinous path that so many Naga leaders have fallen into; for reason best known to them. Therefore, we wouldn’t follow leaders who cannot shoulder the responsibility of working for the Naga nation towards achieving our inherent sovereign political rights. Naga people’s mandate for a sovereign Nagaland has always been our guiding principal and our ultimate goal. Thus, in keeping with the glorious sacrifices of our forefathers, we have posed our unflinching confidence and faith in the leadership of our president Nyemlang Konyak Naga to lead Nagas towards our goal of sovereign political rights, therefore we humbly request all to kindly respect our decision as we collectively form a united front to defend and fight for our inherent sovereign political rights. interlocutor’s commitment, depth and understanding of the Naga issue is second to none. With him at the helm, the Indo-Naga conflict has taken a pragmatic, proactive turn towards finding an acceptable and honourable political solution. Fr o m d ay o n e, WC,NNPGs believed in inclusivity and transparency. Brainstorming on critical issues taking our people’s view into consideration has been a powerful ingredient in the ongoing political dialogue. We have negotiated at length and agreed in principle the proposed political arrangements, entrenching distinct Naga identity in all Naga inhabited areas. After all it is a Naga narrative and not of one leader. To suggest a new interlocutor at this time is to rewind the Indo-Naga issue back to zero. A return to same old situation employing the same old trick: burn Nagaland, ransack it, strangulate and heap more misery and suffering on the Naga public in the name of political issue. WC, NNPGs believes that Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi, Home Minister Mr. Amit Shah and current Interlocutor Mr. R.N Ravi, by now, realise that the Naga people have great hope in their future through enduring peaceful co-existence, as reflected in the Agreed Po-

sition of 17th Nov. 2017. In the last few years Naga Tribal hohos, apex civil societies, the church and Nagas citizens at large have come to understand the factual position of GOI and Nagas. All negotiating groups agreed in principle that dialogues had completed on 31st Oct. 2019. There is little reason for any entity to veer off the track. Regrettably, there are few hired mainland media people, without even setting foot in Nagaland and knowing nothing about our people’s sentiment on the ground, are conveniently lining up potential Interlocutors for Naga talks in the comfort of their airconditioned rooms! These are people who live and die churning out fallacies through print and electronic media. They should come to Nagaland, meet the tribes and get their facts right. At home and from afar, the modus operandi is at play to destroy Nagaland again. The WC, NNPGs will neither comment nor tutor Mr. R.N on how to play a gubernatorial role in the state of Nagaland. Naga people and history will judge him either as hero or villain over his dual role. WC, NNPGs commenting on the actions of Nagaland’s Governor will not serve the purpose. Media Cell, WC, NNPGs

UNPO’s Timely Resolution on Indo-Naga Peace Talks

T

he recent resolution passed by the Unrepresented Nations & Peoples Organization (UNPO) during its XV General Assembly in support of a peaceful settlement of the Indo-Naga issue is most timely. The UNPO calls for a peaceful resolution “which is just, long lasting, honorable and acceptable to both the sides”. The resolution also “urges India to repeal acts such as the Armed Forces Special Powers Act and the Disturbed Area Act which overly militarize the situation facing the Naga people”. The Naga Rising (TNR) records its gratitude to the UNPO for continuing to extend its solidarity and upholding the inalienable rights of the Nagas. This support at the global level through platforms such as the UNPO has kept the hope high for the Naga people. The respect and honor that the Naga issue commands is a matter of pride for our people. At this critical time in our history, The Naga Rising implores upon the Naga Political Groups and their leadership to guard against divisiveness and self-destruction. The current situation and how we respond to it, is indeed crucial, as it would define the kind of future that we want to see. Do we go back to the bitterness of the past or do we move forward towards a shared

future of peace, prosperity and political honor? To defend the inalienable rights of our people, the Naga Political Groups as well as all sections of society must realize the pre-requisite of presenting a common political voice. If Nagas do not wake up and come together, the Government of India (GoI) will find an excuse to drag the peace process or impose its own design like it did in Jammu & Kashmir. After all it suits the GoI strategically to keep the Nagas engaged in ceasefires and peace talks. The UNPO resolution is also a reminder of the international obligation for the Government of India to fulfill its commitment towards a peace agreement that is honorable, inclusive and mutually acceptable. The international community is watching. As an aspiring major power that claims it espouses the idea of a more democratic global order, how India structures itself internally would be viewed as a template of how it intends to build a “multipolar” world system. Peace cannot be achieved by sticking to our old positions. All parties must realize that peace requires partnerships and cooperation. And therefore, the way to peace demands a spirit of mutual understanding and reciprocity. The Naga Rising

forces of both sides to defuse the situation. Corps Commander Level Flag Meeting was held on June 6. 2020. However, a violent face-off incident took place between the two sides on June 15, 2O2O, resulting in casualties of both sides,” the ministry stated.

Defence Ministry removes report of Chinese intrusion from website With the disengagement process stuck, the Ministry of Defence had earlier this week put out a note on its official website in which it referred to the Chinese aggression as “transgression” for the first time.

In an unprecendented move, the Ministry of Defence document, admitting Chinese intrusion into Indian territory in May, was removed from the official website on Thursday following a political controversy.

It further pointed out that subsequently second Corps Commander-level meeting took place on June 22, 2020 to discuss modalities of de-escalation process. “While engagement and dialogue at military and diplomatic level is continu-

ing to arrive at mutually acceptable consensus the present stand-off is likely to be prolonged,” the report stated. The report ended with saying that “prompt action based on evolving situation” should be taken. The third meeting took place on June 30 and it went

on for around 12 hours. During the meeting, all contentious areas of stand-off were discussed to stabilise the situation. China had agreed to move back in Pangong Tso but did not. India claims Line of Actual Control at Finger 8 and Chinese are sitting between Finger 4 and Finger 5. Similar, differences exist in Depsang and Demchok. The fourth meeting took place on July 14 where India and China military delegates held deliberations about disengagement of troops and materials at the borders for 15 long hours. Indian delegates asked Chinese People’s Liberation Army troops to completely withdraw from Pangong Lake and Depsang. The fifth meeting that took place on August 2 made it clear that China’s commitment for disengagement at the border in Eastern Ladakh was non-committal and the Indian authorities directed armed forces to prepare for a long haul.

from websites would not change facts. The document, which was uploaded on the Defence ministry’s website, was removed on Thursday morning following publication of a media report based on it. “Forget standing up to

China, India’s PM lacks the courage even to name them. Denying China is in our territory and removing documents from websites won’t change the facts,” Gandhi tweeted while tagging the news report based on the Defence ministry document.

Panna (MP), Aug 6 (PTI): A labourer became a millionaire overnight when he unearthed three diamonds worth Rs 30-35 lakh at a diamond mine in Panna district of Madhya Pradesh, a senior official said Thursday. While digging a shallow mine, the labourer, identified only as Subal, found three diamonds with net weight of 7.5 carat, Panna district’s diamond officer R K Pandey said. Experts have valued the precious stones at anywhere between Rs 30-35 lakh. The labourer has deposited the stones at the district diamond office and they will be auctioned as per government rules, Pandey said. After deducting 12% tax, Subal will get the remaining 88% of the sale proceeds, the official said. A few days ago, another labourer had managed to find a 10.69 carat diamond from one of the mines in Panna in Bundelkhand region of MP. Panna is world famous for its diamond mines.

NEW DELHI, AUG 6 (PTI): The CBI has taken over investigation into the actor Sushant Singh Rajput death case from the Bihar Police after re-registering an FIR of alleged criminal conspiracy and abetment to suicide against his rumoured girlfriend Rhea Chakraborty, officials said Thursday. The case will be probed by a special investigation team under Superintendent of Police Nupur Prasad and will be supervised by DIG Gagandeep Gambhir and Joint Director Manoj Shashidhar, both senior IPS officers from the Gujarat cadre, they said. The agency acted swiftly on a reference from the government in Bihar, the home state of 34-year-old Rajput, where his family had lodged an FIR against Chakraborty, they said. The Patna police had

registered the FIR under IPC sections related to alleged criminal conspiracy, cheating and abetment to suicide, among others. The case has gone to the CBI on a reference from the Bihar government which has been forwarded to the agency by the central government. A state government cannot give a case to the CBI. It is routed through the Department of Personnel and Training, the nodal ministry for the CBI. Seeing anguish over the death of Rajput in Bihar, which goes to assembly polls later this year, the state referred the matter to the CBI even as the Mumbai Police is probing the main case related to alleged suicide of the 34-year old actor. The Maharashtra government has raised objection to the move as Bihar does not have jurisdiction to start a probe in a different state.

said the Common Selection Board (CSB) of August 4, 2020, accorded the Merit List 2020 determined as per the “approved Methodology of Normalization of Marks” based on NBSE marks as BASE for selection of the candidates. NSUI state unit said that the directorate’s decision has not only flouted the rules, but also shattered the dreams and the career of hundreds of students. The student body queried as to what prompted the department to give away the seats without conducting exams through the NSEE. NSUI also demanded the nullification of the notification no. DTE/ESTT2/12/2018-19(pt) issued by the DoTE and ensure free and fair test at an appropriate time. It said that

the provisional candidates were selected basing on the normalization of marks obtained in HSSLC. However, it said that there had been no mention of such procedure for selection anywhere in the NSEE application form 2020. NSUI also said that the directorate’s notification has “come as a shock” for the hundreds of students who were preparing for the entrance examination. Further, NSUI maintained that many students have taken a year gap to prepare for the exams while taking coaching classes. It stated that students from the weak economical background, who could not fare well in the board exams, had put in extra effort to get through NSEE for further studies.

A higher pill burden has been associated with lower adherence to therapy, the latter affecting viral suppression and overall treatment outcomes. Reducing the pill burden has also been a demand from doctors and patients to enable adherence, the company said. “With the new 400 mg version, patients will now have a more relaxed dosage regimen, with 9 tablets required on Day 1, and thereafter 2 tablets twice a day from Day 2 till end of the course,” Glenmark Pharmaceuticals added. Explaining the significance of this development, Monika Tandon, Vice President and Head, Clinical Development of Glenmark Pharmaceuticals Limited said, “The 200 mg dosage of FabiFlu was developed in line with global formulations of the drug Favipiravir, which had similar strength. The 400 mg version is a result of Glenmark’s own R&D efforts to improve treatment experience for patients in India.”

Lebanon probes blast amid rising anger SLPP sweeps polls in Sri Lanka death toll rises to 135, more than 5000 injured

People evacuate wounded after of a massive explosion in Beirut, Lebanon, Tuesday, Aug. 4, 2020. (AP/PTI)

Beirut, Aug 6 (AP): Lebanese officials targeted in the investigation of the massive blast that tore through Beirut sought to shift blame for the presence of explosives at the city’s port, and the visiting French president warned Thursday that without serious reforms the country would “continue to sink.” The blast Tuesday, which appeared to have been caused by an accidental fire that ignited a warehouse full of ammonium nitrate at the city’s port, rippled across the Lebanese capital, killing at least 135 people, injuring more than 5,000 and causing widespread destruction. It also may have accel-

erated the country’s coronavirus outbreak, as thousands flooded into hospitals in the wake of the blast. Tens of thousands have been forced to move in with relatives and friends after their homes were damaged, further raising the risks of exposure. French President Emmanuel Macron visited Thursday amid widespread pledges of international aid. But Lebanon, which was already mired in a severe economic crisis, faces a daunting challenge in rebuilding. It’s unclear how much support the international community will offer the notoriously corrupt and dysfunctional government.

Macron, who viewed the devastated port and was to meet with senior Lebanese officials, said the visit is “an opportunity to have a frank and challenging dialogue with the Lebanese political powers and institutions.” He said France will work to coordinate aid but warned that “if reforms are not made, Lebanon will continue to sink.” Losses from the blast are estimated to be between USD 10 billion to USD 15 billion, Beirut Gov. Marwan Abboud told the Saudi-owned TV station Al-Hadath on Wednesday, adding that nearly 300,000 people are homeless. The head of Lebanon’s customs

department meanwhile confirmed in an interview with LBC TV late Wednesday that officials had sent five or six letters over the years to the judiciary asking that the ammonium nitrate be removed because of the dangers it posed. But Badri Daher said all he could do was alert authorities to the presence of dangerous materials, saying even that was “extra work” for him and his predecessor. He said the port authority was responsible for the material, while his job was to prevent smuggling and collect duties. The judiciary and the port authority could not immediately be reached for comment. The government said Wednesday that an investigation was underway and that port officials have been placed under house arrest. The investigation into the explosion is focused on how 2,750 tons of ammonium nitrate, a highly explosive chemical used in fertilizers, came to be stored at the port facility for six years, and why nothing was done about it. The cargo had been stored at the port since it was confiscated from a ship years earlier. Based on the timeline and the size of the cargo, that ship could be the MV Rhosus. The ship was initially seized in Beirut in 2013 when it entered the port due to technical problems, according to law-

yers involved in the case. It came from the nation of Georgia, and had been bound for Mozambique. The stockpile is believed to have detonated after a fire broke out nearby in what appeared to be a warehouse holding fireworks. Daher, the customs official, said he did not know if there were fireworks near the ammonium nitrate. Another theory is that the fire began when welders were trying to repair a broken gate and a hole in the wall of Hangar 12, where the explosive material was being stored. Local news reports say the repair work was ordered by security forces who investigated the facility and were concerned about theft. Security officials have declined to comment while the investigation is underway. Port officials have rejected the theory in interviews with local media, saying the welders completed their work long before the fire broke out. Anger is mounting against the various political factions, including the Iranbacked Hezbollah militant group, that have ruled the country since the 1975-1990 civil war. The country’s longserving politicians are widely seen as being hopelessly corrupt and incapable of providing even basic services like electricity and trash collection.

COLOMBO, AUG 6 ( AGENCIES): Early trends in the 2020 General Elections show a massive victory for Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP). Of the Postal votes announced so far, the SLPP bagged over 70 percent, while the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) lead by Sajith Premadasa less than 15%. The United National Party (UNP) and Jathika Jana Balawegaya (JJB) combating for the third place with a single-digit percentage share each, reports Asia Tribune. The postal votes indicate that the SLPP is far ahead of the rivals, but how far the lead will stretch remains to be seen. However, the SLPP will be in a position to form a strong government with an absolute majority in the 225-member Parliament. The people of Sri Lanka showed once again their commitment to democracy by casting their votes brav-

ing the COVID19 pandemic threat. Chairman of the National Election Commission Mahinda Deshapriya announced that the election, conducted amidst COVID19 pandemic fears, concluded in a peaceful manner, with the voter turnout being 71 percent. “We have to be grateful to the voting public for recording such a high turnout despite corona fears,” he said. He said considering that the election was delayed by more than three months and various conflicts among some political groups, the voters should be praised for turning up in large numbers and recording a 71 percent turnout. The election monitoring body -- the People’s Action for a Free and Fair Election (PAFFREL) -- has deployed 5,000 observers across the nation to monitor the election process. The election, originally scheduled for April 25, was

put off until June 20 as the Covid-19 outbreak hampered the preparations. It was postponed once again and August 5 date was later fixed as the health authorities issued guidelines on holding the poll. Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa, said his younger brother Gotabaya’s election as president was endorsed by 6.9 million voters last November and that he was confident that the SLPP would get control of the Parliament with a comfortable margin. “We are ready to face economic challenges. We have already faced challenges more severe than these. We commend the people’s enthusiasm to vote in line with health guidelines.” He said that the President’s program which was approved by 6.9 million people, would be implemented following the formation of the new Cabinet of Ministers.

Seoul, Aug 6 (IANS): Major highways in Seoul were partly closed on Thursday, with the first flood alerts issued after nine years, as heavy rains have increased the water level of the Han river that flows through the South Korean capital city. Several sections of the Dongbu Urban Expressway,

Seoul Inner Loop, Olympic-daero and Gangbyeon Northern Highway have been closed to traffic due to the inner city river’s increased water level, reports Yonhap News Agency. As heavy rains continued to batter the country’s metropolitan and central regions, authorities opened

the floodgates of Soyang River Dam and Paldang Dam a day earlier. Meanwhile, the water level over Jamsu Bridge reached a record high level of 11.3 metres , completely submerging it. The previous highest point was 11.03 metres posted in the July monsoon in 2011, according to the Han River Flood Control Center. A total of 11 of Seoul’s 25 wards, including Yongsan, Gangnam, Seocho and Mapo, are at risk of flooding because of the river’s swelling water level, according to authorities. At least 16 people have been killed in rain-related incidents so far, while over 15 remained missing as of Thursday and more than 1,600 people were displaced from their homes.

Rome, Aug 6 (IANS): Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte said that he was “committed” to reopen schools next month. “I commit to the young people, to the families, to the country, to teachers, and to staff that schools will reopen,” Xinhua news agency quoted Conte as saying in an interview published in the Italian newspaper Corriere Della Sera on Wednesday. “I have no doubt,” he added. Also on Wednesday, Minister of Education Lucia Azzolina approved nearly 1 billion euros ($1.2 billion) in new spending on the country’s schools, which is in addition to the 1.3 billion euros announced previously. Azzolina said classrooms will be limited to 15 students due to social distancing, and that as many

Lord Ram’s image displayed at iconic Times Square New York, Aug 6 (PTI): The image of Lord Ram and the grand Ram Temple to be built in Ayodhya beamed across a giant billboard at the iconic Times Square in New York City where members of the Indian community gathered in large numbers to celebrate the ‘Bhoomi Poojan’ performed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The bright image of Lord Ram, the grand temple and the Indian tricolour beamed on a giant wraparound LED display screen on Wednesday. While the organisers had planned to beam the photos from 8 AM to 10 PM on Wednesday, the image of Lord Ram and the temple was displayed for about four hours till 1 PM. “Extremist groups can try to stymie us but they cannot silence Hindus. Come celebrate our RamJi in Times Square tonight at 7:30 for a diya lighting!! (there will be no displays in the evening),” the organisers said on the website ramcelebration.org. the event said that the members of the Indian community gathered in huge numbers to celebrate the historic day when Prime Minister Modi performed the ‘Bhoomi Pujan’ of the Ram temple in Ayodhya. Dressed in cultural attires, members of the Indian diaspora from across the New York tri-state area and many travelling from other states gathered in the evening at Times Square where the organisers had planned

to light diyas, sing Bhajans and distribute sweets. Chanting ‘Jai Shree Ram’ and waving flags and banners, the people celebrated the groundbreaking ceremony of the temple in Times Square. Sources said that the company running the billboard cited legal obligations to say they could not run political advertisements. The sources, however, added that the image was not political in nature.

They said that the image of Lord Ram being displayed at Times Square, even if for four hours and not for the entire day as initially planned, is unprecedented and historic in itself. Sewhani had earlier said: “This is not a once in a lifetime or a once in a century event. This is an event that comes once in the life of mankind. We had to give it a befitting celebration and what better place than the iconic Times Square to com-

memorate the ‘Ram Janma Bhoomi Shilanyas’. “Under Prime Minister Modi, the construction of the Ram Temple is a dream come true for Hindus all over the world. Till six years back, we never thought that this day will come soon but due to Modi’s leadership, this day has come and we want to celebrate it in a befitting way”. However, some groups had voiced opposition to the celebration in Times Square and the display of the image of Lord Ram and the temple on the billboards. Coalition Against Fascism in India, Hindus for Human Rights and IndianAmerican Muslim Council had signed a petition to New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio against the display of the image on billboards. The Coalition Against Fascism in India had organised a protest at Times Square at the same time that members of the Indian community gathered to celebrate the occasion. The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organisation, also opposed the celebration at Times Square.

Players of Manchester United and LASK vie for the ball during their Europa League round of 16 second leg match at Old Trafford in Manchester, England.

MANCHESTER, Aug 6 (Agencies): Former Europa League winners Manchester United booked a quarter-final spot in the tournament after their second-string side laboured to a 2-1 home win over LASK Linz on Wednesday to seal a 7-1 aggregate rout of the Austrian side. United’s reward is a clash with FC Copenhagen in Cologne on Monday after the Danish side beat Istanbul Basaksehir 3-0 at home earlier on Wednesday to wipe out a 1-0 first-leg deficit. United, who won Eu-

rope’s second-tier club competition in 2017, appeared to be going through the motions and fell behind to a spectacular Philipp Wiesinger goal in the 55th minute before Jesse Lingard and Anthony Martial replied. Having been virtually assured of progress after a 5-0 win at LASK in March, United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer fielded a belowstrength side at Old Trafford and they looked completely at sea for an hour. Solskjaer said the fringe players needed a run out to stay in shape for United’s trip to Germany, where the

latter stages of the competition will be played in a minitournament, as his side aim to end the season on a high note. “We learned that the players need to play to keep that sharpness,” the Norwegian told BT Sport. “Some of these lads haven’t played for a while and it showed. Some haven’t played since lockdown. For me, it was a good exercise. Kyrgios hints at pulling out of French Open

Nick Kyrgios

C an b erra , Au g 6 (Agencies): Australia’s Nick Kyrgios said on Thursday he is unlikely to play at the French Open due to concerns about COVID-19. Kyrgios, who on Sunday announced his withdrawal from the U.S. Open, told Australian television he planned to wait until it was safer to return to the tour. “It’s a very slim chance I’ll play in Europe. Almost slim to none, to be honest,” the 25-year-old told Channel Nine. “I’m going to use this (time) to stay home, train, be

with my family, be with my friends and I’m just going to act responsibly, and wait till I think there’s better circumstances to play.” Kyrgios is no fan of clay or the French Open, which has been postponed from its usual May-June dates to a September start due to the pandemic. Last year, he said the French Open “sucks” before pulling out of the tournament, citing sickness. The August 13-September 13 U.S. Open, which will be played without spectators, has been hit with a number

of high-profile withdrawals including Australian women’s world number one Ash Barty and men’s world number two Rafa Nadal. Canberra-based Kyrgios said it was an easy decision to pull out of the Grand Slam in New York. “But even with the (Black Lives Matter) movement and the whole protests and that type of stuff going on over there, I just don’t think at the moment it’s the correct time to go ahead with sport, in my opinion,” he said. A fresh outbreak of COVID-19 in Melbourne has raised questions about whether the Australian Open can be held in January, with the city undergoing a second lockdown. Organisers are planning for it to go ahead, without fans if necessary, but Kyrgios was unconvinced. “With the pandemic in Melbourne, I heard on the radio today I think 700 new cases, we reached new heights in deaths,” he said. “I’m not sure the Australian Open will go on.”

Late substitute Martial completed United’s comeback on the night in the 88th minute when his close-range shot trickled over the line after squeezing through Schlager’s legs. Romero spared United more blushes when he kept out a Raguz back-heel from two metres with a superb reflex save deep into stoppage time. The last eight will be played in four German cities as part of the mini-tournament, with the final on August 21 in Cologne.

New Delhi, Aug 6 (PTI): The heads of BCCI and Cricket Australia (CA) will be connecting virtually to discuss the hosting of two T20 World Cups in the next two years when the ICC’s all-powerful board meets on Friday. The decision will also be impacted by the stand of the two boards on the next ICC chairman, the nomination process of which is yet to be announced formally. It is expected that BCCI president Sourav Ganguly and secretary Jay Shah along with CA’s Earl Eddings and Nick Hockley will reach a consensus on the hosting of 2021 and 2022 editions. “The the main agenda of the meeting is scheduling of ICC tournaments including the women’s ODI World Cup in New Zealand early next year,” an ICC Board member told PTI. ICC World T20 which was scheduled to be held in Australia from October 18 was postponed making way for IPL to be held from September 19 in UAE. It is expected that CA will like to host the T20 World Cup in October 2021 as it had already started preparations and wouldn’t like to wait for two years but BCCI also doesn’t want to forego its right to host the tournament in 2021.

BCCI, Vivo suspend partnership for IPL 2020

New Delhi, Aug 6 (PTI): The BCCI on Thursday suspended the IPL title sponsorship deal with Chinese mobile phone company Vivo for the event’s upcoming edition amid soaring Sino-India diplomatic tensions. The BCCI sent out a one-line statement, without giving any details, to say that Vivo will not be associated with the IPL this year. “The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and vivo Mobile India Pvt Ltd have decided to suspend their partnership for Indian Premier League in 2020,” the press release stated. Vivo won the IPL title sponsorship rights for five years from 2018 to 2022 for a reported sum of Rs 2190 crore, approximately Rs 440 crore per annum. The two parties are now working out a plan in which Vivo might come back for a fresh three-year period starting 2021 on revised terms. However, a top

BCCI official offered a different view. The BCCI is now likely to float a tender for new IPL title sponsors as mandated by its constitution. The new development is in stark contrast to what came out of Sunday’s IPL’s Governing Council meeting, where it was decided that Vivo, along with all other sponsors, will remain on board. This was after BCCI had announced in June that all sponsorship deals pertaining to IPL will be reviewed in the aftermath of the clash at the Galwan Valley. However, after Sunday’s meeting, there was a huge backlash on social media about BCCI holding on to Vivo. Both parties then began thrashing out an amicable separation plan, at least for this season. However, the end of this deal could spell losses for the franchises as they get a substantial share from the sponsorship pool.

had the opportunity to bring parity into the contest in the 65th minute. A VAR review found that Diego Godin had handballed in his own box and awarded Getafe a penalty. But to their dismay, veteran centre-forward Jorge Molina failed to see the back of the net from the 12 yards spot. With six minutes remaining, Eriksen reserved Inter’s spot in the last eight of the ongoing Europa League. Getafe defender Dakonam Djene made a mess of a clearance in his own area before the former Tottenham Hotspur player made the scoreline 2-0 in the 84th minute.

Arsenal make Willian 3-yr offer

Sanchez completes permanent move to Inter

L o nd o n , A u g 6 (Agencies): Arsenal have made a formal threeyear contract offer to Willian, edging them to the front of the race to sign the Brazilian forward. Joining Mikel Arteta’s rejuvenated side and the chance to work with fellow Brazilian Edu are the reasons Arsenal are favourites to secure Willian’s signature. Arsenal have made a formal three-year contract offer to Willian, still some way short of the terms offered by Barcelona and Inter Miami. Despite wanting the 31-year-old to extend his stay at Stamford Bridge, Chelsea have refused to offer more than a further two years - and the chances of him being a Chelsea player when the new season begins in five weeks now look remote. Lampard has admitted his side need to improve defensively, but that Chelsea would need to sell before they can buy, having already spent big in the attacking areas by signing Timo Werner and Hakim Ziyech.

Milan, Aug 6 (IANS): Serie A giants Inter Milan on Thursday announced permanent transfer of Chilean forward Alexis Sanchez from Manchester United. Sanchez, who was on a season-long loan at the San Siro Stadium, put pet to paper on a deal that will run until 2023. No transfer fee was involved in the deal as United seemed to be in a hurry to offload the forward who couldn’t reach the heights of his previous years at Old Trafford. He was also reportedly earning in excess of 500,000 pounds per week at Manchester United. “FC Internazionale Milano announces that Alexis Sanchez is moving to the Nerazzurri outright free of charge. The Chilean striker has signed a contract with the club until June 30, 2023,” Inter said in a statement. Paul added seven rebounds and six assists to continue his excellent form since the NBA’s restart. The veteran point guard is averaging 20.7 points in Oklahoma City’s three games in central Florida. The Lakers had their worst offensive game of the season, with season lows in points and three-point percentage. Los Angeles were just 5-of-37 from behind the three-point arc, with the 13.5 per cent rate the Lakers’ worst since early in the 2017-18 season. Danilo Gallinari added 19 points and Steven Adams 18 for Oklahoma City, who once again was playing without back-up point guard Dennis Schroder. Alexis enjoyed his time there they have liked him so that’s a good move for him,” Sky Sports quoted Solskjaer as saying. “We wish him all the best and he is a top player who we want to see play his best football.” Meanwhile, Inter manager Antonio Conte had said they got Sanchez back on track after his poor spell in Manchester and now it’s time to reap the reward by getting him full-time at the club. “I think the Alexis Sanchez move is a great one made by the club. Considering the conditions we managed to get Alexis, it was a really good transfer,” Conte told Sky Sport Italia following Inter’s 2-0 Europa League win over Getafe. “He had come off two years when he was really struggling at Manchester United, then he got this injury with us and we took the time to get him back on track, so it’s only right that we are now able to reap the rewards of that effort,” he added.

Man City sign Ake from Bournemouth Manchester, Aug 6 (IANS): Manchester C i t y h ave s i g n e d d e fender Nathan Ake from Bournemouth. Ake has put pen to paper on a five-year deal, keeping him at City until summer of 2025. The 25-year-old said he is delighted to have joined City, a club he feels offers him everything he needs to win trophies and have a successful career. “City have been the best side in England over the course of the last decade,” said Ake. “Coming here is a dream for me. This is a top side full of world-class players. Everywhere you look in this squad there are big names with international pedigree. I know I’m going to have to work hard to get into the side, but that’s what I’m here to do. I’ll do whatever I can to make an impact and help the team win silverware,” he added. The defender was a key part of Chelsea’s 2012 FA Youth Cup winning side and then captained their U21s to the 2013/14 U21 Premier League title.

Rafa Benitez handed Ake his debut as a secondhalf sub against Norwich on Boxing Day 2012 and he made his first start in an FA Cup win over Middlesbrough. However, his chances at Chelsea were limited and he went in search of regular first-team football. He spent a month on loan at Championship side Reading in 2015, making five appearances, before spending the 2015/16 season on loan at Watford. Bournemouth offered him a six-month loan the

following campaign. He played 12 times and scored three goals for the Cherries. He returned to Chelsea for the second half of the campaign and made five appearances. Bournemouth made the move permanent that summer, signing Ake for 20 million pounds. He became an essential player for the south coast side and made 109 appearances after joining permanently, scoring eight goals, playing every Premier League game in both the 17/18 and 18/19 seasons.
