Farmers threaten to block railway tracks Centre says ready to discuss its proposals NEW DELHI, DEC 10 (PTI): Virtually ruling out repealing of new farm laws, the government on Thursday asked farmer groups to consider its proposals for amending the Acts to address their concerns and said it is open to discussing its offer further whenever the unions want, but protesters remained defiant and threatened to block railway tracks too across India in addition to highways. A day after protesting farmers rejected the government’s offer for a written assurance on Minimum Support Price (MSP) and amend few provisions in the new farm laws, Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar said at a press conference that union leaders must consider the proposals and said he is ready for further discussions with them, but left it to the farmer groups to propose a date for the next round of talks. At least five rounds

EPIC change: Voter ID cards to go digital NEW DELHI, DEC 10 (AGENCIES): Your voter identity card is set to go digital. Just like Aadhaar. Once the final decision comes from the Election Commission of India (ECI), voters will be able to download their Electors Photo Identity Card (EPIC) or voter ID card and vote using the digital version. Sources from ECI told News18 that the poll panel plan is ready and once the commission gives the goahead, they will provide the facility to voters, soon. According to sources, newly enrolled voters will get the facility automatically and existing voters will have to complete some formalities through the Voter Helpline app to avail it. News18 has learnt that after due consideration, the Election Commission is set to give its nod and reveal the final plan. Apart from the downloadable digital voter card, the existing EPIC facility will also be in place. The idea behind this plan is ease of delivery. New voters will get the facility after downloading the card on a registered mobile connection. Once the approval by competent authorities for a new application for a voter card is provided, the applicant can get it in digital format.

of formal talks have taken place, but the deadlock has continued with the unions sticking to their main demand for the repeal of the three contentious laws and repeatedly rejecting the Centre’s offer to make some changes in law and give written assurances or clarifications on few issues such as MSP and mandi systems. Addressing reporters along with Food, Railways and Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal, Tomar said he is still hopeful of a resolution. “It is also unfair to intensify the agitation when

the talks were still on,” the ministers said, adding that the government has an “open mind” and ready for discussion on “any forum”. Farmers who have been agitating for the past two weeks against the new agri laws on Thursday announced that they will block railway tracks if their demands are not met by the government. The farmer unions, which held a meeting on Thursday, said they will soon announce a date for blocking tracks across the country. Addressing reporters

at the Delhi’s Singhu border where they have been protesting for almost two weeks to demand a rollback of the agri laws, the farmer unions also reiterated that they will intensify their agitation and start blocking all highways leading to the national capital. “We will block railway tracks if our demands are not met. We will decide on the date and announce it soon. The blocking of tracks will not be limited to Haryana and Punjab but it will be done across the country,” farmer leader Boota Singh said at the press conference. Thousands of farmers have been protesting at various border points of Delhi for almost two weeks seeking a repeal of the new agri laws, which they claim were aimed at benefitting corporates by weakening the ‘mandi’ system and the minimum support price (MSP) regime for procurement of farm produce. “Five rounds of talks have already been held with the government, but they remained inconclusive. So far, the government has not sent us any invitation for another round of talks. If

government sends us proposal for a meeting, we will decide it in our meeting,” another farmer leader Shiv Kumar Kakka told PTI. Asked about solution to ongoing standoff with the government, Kakka said, “only God knows.” “We are facing a lot of difficulties due to cold weather and the COVID-19 pandemic, but despite this, we will continue our protest until our demands are met,” Kakka also added. Meanwhile, Chandigarh-based farmers’ organisation AIKCC, not one of the 40 unions that are protesting at Delhi borders seeking repeal of the farm laws, on Thursday welcomed the government’s gesture to keep the dialogue open with farm leaders.

FIR against farmers

Meanwhile, an FIR against farmers sitting on Delhi’s Singhu Border red light has been lodged, reports Zee News. Delhi Police filed the case against the agitating farmers at Alipur police station, for not following social distancing under Pandemic Act and other sections.

PM lays foundation stone of new Parl building Calls the event as ‘milestone in India’s democratic history’ NEW DELHI, DEC 10 (PTI): Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone of the new Parliament building on Thursday and described the event as a “milestone in India’s democratic history”, asserting that if the old Parliament House gave direction to the country post-independence, the new one would be a witness to the making of an ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’. Addressing a gathering after laying the foundation stone and performing the ground-breaking ceremony, Modi urged the people to take a pledge to keep ‘India First’ and asserted that every decision should increase the strength of the country, whose interest is paramount. Asserting that Indian demo-

cratic traditions predate the Magna Carta, a 13th century document many scholars consider as the framework for a modern republic, the prime minister said that the day is not far when the world will term India “mother of democracy” if Indians extol the country’s democratic history with confidence. “It is a very historic day. Today is a milestone in India’s democratic history... We, the people of India, will together build this new building of Parliament,” Modi said, adding that the new building will be an inspiration when India will celebrate 75 years of its independence. The making of the new Parliament

building is an example of co-existence of the new with the old, he said. “I can never forget the moment in my life when I had the opportunity to come to Parliament House for the first time in 2014 as an MP. Before stepping in, I bowed and saluted this temple of democracy,” Modi said. “The current Parliament building played an important role in pre and post independent India. The first government of an independent India was formed here and the first sitting of Parliament took place here, our Constitution was drafted here, our democracy was re-established here. Babasaheb Ambedkar and others,

after deep deliberations in the Central Hall, gave us a Constitution,” he said. The new building, whose construction is likely to be completed in 2022, will have an area of 64,500 square metres. It will also have a grand Constitution Hall to showcase India’s democratic heritage, a lounge for members of Parliament, a library, multiple committee rooms, dining areas and ample parking space. Priests from the Sringeri Math Karnataka did the rituals for the ‘bhoomi pujan’ at the new Parliament building site and it was followed by a ‘sarva dharma prarthana’ (interfaith prayer).

Aos have to play a role for Naga unity, says Dr. Jamir Staff Reporter

DIMAPUR, DEC 10 (NPN): Veteran Naga politician, former governor and former four-time chief minister, Dr. S.C. Jamir said Aos have been blessed for being pioneers of Christianity as they had led in the field of education and politics and today they need to take the lead in bringing all Naga tribes together by looking beyond the boundaries of their villages, range and tribe etc. He said this while addressing the 61st general meeting of Ao Senso Telongjem Dimapur (ASTD) at Senden Reju, Dimapur, on December 10. Dr. Jamir said Nagas are surrounded on all sides by various religions such as Hinduism and Islam in Assam, Hinduism in Manipur, Buddhism in Myanmar but no state or country has succeeded in bringing Nagaland under other religions. In this, he reminded the gathering that Aos have played a pioneering role in bringing Nagas under the fold of Christianity. Dr. Jamir said this proved that

the land of Nagas is the chosen land of God. Dr. Jamir, however, lamented that Nagas in general and Aos in particular, have failed to realise this and doing so have chosen to remain under the cloud of violence and in fighting with each other. The veteran Naga politician also recalled that even in the history of Nagaland, Aos shouldered the responsibility of bringing peace and hope in the formation of the Naga People’s Convention (NPC) in 1957. He said NPC was formed by the 16 tribes from erstwhile Naga Hills and Tuensang Frontier Agency who met

in Kohima from August 22 to 26, 1957. He said NPC offered a ray of hope during a dark period of history when Nagas were undergoing so much suffering due to violence and bloodshed. Dr. Jamir said the 16 tribes who formed the NPC under the leadership of Dr. Imkongliba Ao as president and J.B. Jasokie as secretary, proposed the 9 Point Agreement. Dr. Jamir, who is the sole surviving member of the NPC, maintained that the NPC’s 16 point memorandum was unanimously adopted by representatives of 16 Naga tribes at the 3rd (Cont’d on p-6) NPC.

New features in GeM portal DIMAPUR, DEC 10 (NPN): State finance department has informed that the Ministry of Commerce, Government e-Marketplace has introduced new major features and functionalities in GeM portal. The department has, therefore, requested all government departments, PSUs, commercial organisations, start-ups, self-help groups, artisans and craft persons to make use the full potential of GeM. Further, for any query or clarification, the office of GeM desires to make official correspondence with respective buyers or sellers. In this connection, all concerned have been requested to forward department’s official contact number and email id to Niraj Nikunj, Business Facilitator, North East through Mobile No. 9971119503 or email: niraj. nikunj@intellectdesign.com and carbon copy (cc) to findeptt@gmail.com.

DIMAPUR, DEC 10 (NPN): Mokokchung Chamber of Commerce & Industry (MCCI) has demanded that the responsible authorities not to grant bail to an alleged “masked habitual thief ” identified as one Imnawapang Jamir, who was arrested by police at Mokokchung town daily market area on December 9, 2020. In a press release, M C C I sta te d tha t the “criminal deeds” of the arrested accused have been a cause of great concern for the business community of Mokokchung. It said that several traders have been victimized by the accused since last month rendering huge financial losses to the victims and causing much insecurity, mental trauma and distress. Further, MCCI said that since the arrested accused was “a habitual offender” there was no guar-

antee that he would not commit “his serial crimes again” if he was let out in the open without serving his term. MCCI said the traders in particular and the public in general would “fall prey to his criminal acts again.” MCCI has, therefore, demanded the authorities not to grant him bail under any circumstances. MCCI demanded that accused should be prosecuted and punished to the fullest extent of the law. It said that the releasing him on bail would be considered as “aiding and abetting a habitual offender to commit serial crimes against innocent citizens. “In the event of releasing him bail, MCCI said “we will consider it as perversion of justice, distortion of legal jurisprudence and normalization of crime”, adding that it would be “compelled to make our stand in ways we deem fit.” (Cont’d on p-6)

FB sued for ‘illegally’ maintaining ‘monopoly power’ Nagaland COVID tally 11602 NEW YORK, DEC 10 (IANS): In a landmark antitrust action headlined by bipartisan support, the US federal government and 48 states led by the New York Attorney General have sued Facebook in two separate lawsuits, accusing it of abusing its market power to “neutralize” competition and going into “destroy mode” against smaller players. The lawsuits are now seeking action that could include a spinoff of Facebook-owned Instagram and WhatsApp services. The case against Facebook was announced on Wednesday by the Federal Trade Commission and New York Attorney General Letitia James. The led lawsuit runs into more than 100 pages, the FTC lawsuit is 53 pages long and both the documents align on the big themes of “predatory” conduct. Anti-trust legislation is

something both Republicans and Democrats support. In previous years, it has been used to break up tobacco companies and AT&T. Microsoft was almost split up after losing an anti-trust case in the 1990s. Facebook’s user base in America is among its lowest across geographies. But its average revenue per user (ARPU) in the US, Canada and Europe is relatively higher because of what Facebook calls the “maturity of these online and mobile advertising markets”. According to Facebook’s latest annual stock market filing, “ARPU in 2019 in the US and Canada region was more than 11 times higher than in the Asia-Pacific region”. The same document lists India, Indonesia, and the Philippines as “key sources of growth” in daily active users. India is Facebook’s larg-

est market with more than 328 million users. WhatsApp accounts for more than 400 million users in India. Wednesday’s lawsuits against Facebook comprise the second big US government-led offensive against Big Tech this year. The first was when the Justice Department sued Google in October, just before the November 3 presidential election, accusing the search giant of capturing the entire online search and advertising market. Within the first two pages, the 48 states make the case that “Facebook has had monopoly power in the personal social networking market in the US” for more than a decade and “illegally maintains that monopoly power by deploying a buyor-bury strategy that thwarts competition and harms both users and advertisers”. Fa c e b o o k ’s i l l e g a l

course of conduct has been driven, in part, by fear that the company has fallen behind in important new segments and that emerging firms were “building networks that were competitive with” the social media giant and could be “very disruptive to” the company’s dominance”, an excerpt from the states’-led lawsuit said. As Facebook’s founder and CEO, Mark Zuckerberg observed, “(o)nething about start-ups is you can often acquire them”, indicating at other times that such acquisitions would enable Facebook to “build a competitive moat” or “neutralize a competitor”, it added. “It’s really critically important that we block this predatory acquisition of companies and that we restore confidence to the market,” James said at a briefing on Wednesday.

Assam NRC not final, 2.77 L ‘undeserving’ on it, HC told

GUWAHATI, DEC 10 (PTI): The historic National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Assam published in August last year was only a “supplementary list” and the final document is yet to come out, state coordinator Hitesh Dev Sarma has told the Gauhati High Court. In the “supplementary list” of the NRC, over 10,000 names were either wrongly included or excluded and necessary orders have been issued to delete nearly 4,800 “ineligible persons” from the document, Sarma said in an affidavit to the high court. The final NRC was released on August 31, 2019 by excluding names of 19,06,657 persons. A total of 3,11,21,004 names were included out of 3,30,27,661 applicants. The affidavit was submitted as per an order by the Gauhati High Court in relation to a writ petition by one Rahima Begam against a Nalbari district Foreigners’ Tribunal order, declaring her a foreigner. “...the Supplementary NRC was already published by the LRCPs on 31st August, 2019, but the final National Register of Citizens is yet to be published by the Registrar General of India as per Clause 7 of the Schedule of the Citizenship (Registration of Citizens and Issue of National Identity Cards) Rules, 2003,” it said. Sarma further stated that after the publication

of the “supplementary list” of inclusion and exclusion on August 31 last year, some of the District Registrar of Citizens Registers (DRCR) formally requested the NRC state coordinator to “change results” of NRC with “proper reasons”. “Altogether 10,199 Nos. of formal requests were received from DRCRs to change the results of NRC. Out of 10,199 persons, a total of 5,404 numbers were for changing the result from ‘Reject’ to ‘Accept’ and a total of 4,795 numbers were for changing result from ‘Accept’ to ‘Reject’,” he said. It was found that out of the total wrongfully included persons, 1,032 belonged to Declared Foreigners (DF), Doubtful Voters (DV), Persons having cases pending at Foreigners Tribunals (PFT) and their descendants (DFD, DVD, PFTD), he added. There are another 3,763 persons who were found ineligible for other reasons and they are still included in the NRC, the affidavit stated. As per the rules of the NRC, the names of the persons belonging to the three categories cannot be included in the historical

document along with their descendants. Sarma said that instructions have been issued to all DRCRs on October 13 this year to issue “speaking orders” for deletion of “names of ineligible persons”. “...it is found that in most of the cases, names of such persons were wrongly included due to data entry errors,” he said in the affidavit. Also, few districts reported that during the hearing, the Disposing Officers could not properly determine the status of DV, DF and PFT categories and their descendants, might be because various state agencies could not guide for correct identification. “Moreover, the Disposing Officers were allowed to take up cases beyond their jurisdiction,” the NRC state coordinator mentioned. On the other hand, a large number of original inhabitants were left out from the draft NRC and some of them did not even submit their claims petitions in the later stages, he added. Sarma said the matching of ‘Family Tree’, which would have been a full-proof method, was not carried out with due diligence in many cases. Though the final NRC was made public last year, it has not been notified by the Registrar General of India yet. This leaves the historic and controversial document without any official validity.

northeast/state Deb cancels mandate test after BJP intervention Agartala, Dec 10 (PTI): Crisis ended in the ruling BJP in Tripura with Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb calling off his “public opinion test” on whether he should continue in the office or not due to dissention against him within the party. Deb cancelled the mandate event he had fixed on December 13 following intervention of BJP president J P Nadda, state observer Vinod Sonkar and the state ministers and BJP legislators reposing faith in him. Deputy Chief Minister Jishnu Devvarma said Thursday that Nadda and Sonkar spoke with Deb and urged him to call off the “public opinion test” scheduled on Sunday. “Besides, all the ministers and BJP MLAs met Deb and urged him to call off the public opinion gathering on December 13. He has accepted our request. There will be no such programme”, Devvarma told reporters here. Over 24 BJP legislators, including all six ministers of the party, visited CM Deb at his official residence late Wednesday evening and held a marathon meeting for nearly two hours in course of which all of them reposed faith in his leadership. After they came out, Minister for Sports and Youth Affairs Manoj Kanti Deb said, “Though we met chief minister in a courtesy call, all party MLAs and ministers have clearly said they want Biplab Deb to continue as Chief Minister”.

Farm bills are in the larger interest of farmers: Mnp CM Correspondent IMPHAL, Dec 10: Manipur chief minister N Biren Singh on Thursday said that his government strongly supports the three controversial farm bills. Addressing a news conference here, Singh said that the three farm bills - the Farmer’s Produced Trade and Commerce (Promotion and Facilitation), Bill 2020, The Farmers (Empowerment and Protection) Agreement of Price Assurance and Farm Services Bill, 2020 and The Essential Commodities (Amendment) Bill, 2020 – were in larger interest of the farmers of the country. “The state government is strongly in support of the bills,” he said. The chief minister said that any role back in reforms and development

Manipur CM addressing a news conference supporting three farm bills in Imphal on Thursday. taken up by the government would mean support to any vested interest which, in future, would hinder other reforms too. He further expressed his views that fear of commission agents to lose their commission, rich farmers taking the opportunity to

get a legal guarantee of lucrative Minimum Support Price (MSP) for their produce and the farmers’ misconception that the government would scrap the MSP must be the reason for protest against the bills in some parts of the country.

The chief minister maintained that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union home minister Amit Shah had repeatedly given assurance to the farmers that the government had no plans to end the government procurement system or the MSP policy. Fortunately, farmers of Manipur were in support of the three farm bills which were passed by the Parliament in September this year, he claimed. He further stated the government brought up the bills to benefit the farmers as farmers could directly take orders and make purchases with no commission agents and middle men. He also appealed to the farmer of the country not to support the current agitation against the three bills.

Assam: BTC polls end, 2nd phase records 78.8 pc turnout Guwahati, Dec 10 (PTI): Over 78 per cent voter turnout was recorded on Thursday in Bodo Territorial Council’s (BTC) second and final phase of polling, which witnessed police firing in the air to control a clash between BPF and UPPL supporters in Chirang district of Assam. Till the closing of polls at 4.30 pm, 78.80 per cent of 10,23,404 voters exercised their franchise, sealing the future of 111 candidates for 19 constituencies spread across Kokrajhar and Chirang districts. An official of the Assam State Election Commission (ASEC) said long queues were still there at several of the booths of the total 1,407 polling stations and the voting percentage is likely to go up further. “Except for one polling booth, it

was peaceful voting. In the said polling booth, the presiding officer was replaced by the returning officer,” he added. At the booth of Dattapur LP School in Chirang, supporters of BPF and UPPL clashed when the presiding officer was helping an aged person to cast his vote. Police had to fire a round in the air to control the situation and voting was interrupted for a brief period, a senior official said after visiting the booth. The polling exercise, which was conducted through the paper ballot, was briefly halted at Pathargaon LP School in Chirang district after the voting stamp was allegedly stolen by one of the voters. The voting for the 19 constituencies in the second and final phase of the 40-member BTC began at 7.30

am amid observation of COVID-19 protocols. However, voters were seen not following the safety regulations with many not wearing masks and people huddling in groups. The much-awaited voting for the BTC began on December 7 with over 77.01 per cent voters exercising their franchise in the first phase of polling for 21 seats in Udalguri and Baksa districts, where 130 candidates have contested. Out of the total 3,164 polling booths in the four districts, the authorities marked 606 as very sensitive and 1,266 as sensitive, and arranged tight security measures in those, an ASEC official said. The counting will be held on December 12, beginning at 8 am.

Tinkering with figures

nflation is rising and would continue to rise for the next one year, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) says in the latest monetary policy review but refuses to increase the lending rate. The policy rates remain unchanged for the third time this year in the bi-monthly monetary policy announced on December 4. The repo rate remains at 4 per cent. The reverse repo rate, the rate at which the RBI gets funds from banks, stands unchanged at 3.35 per cent. RBI governor Shaktikanta Das said that it is an “accommodative stance”. Keeping the rates low may be a “good accommodative gesture” for those who take large loans and are responsible for the poor health of banks. The public sector banks are not in the pink of their health, despite repeated mergers. The large outages due to high lending and poor repayments have put the banking sector in distress. It cannot be about having lending rates steady Equated Monthly Instalments (EMIs) for home, auto or personal loan. Rate tinkering is always small but that gives the signal of difficult situation. The larger concern is seemingly that of corporate, who do not want any rise in lending rates as the banks of late have been tightening their purses for them in the wake of high Non Performing Assets (NPAs), unfortunately from the large companies. The inflation touched a six-year high in October at 7.61 percent. Inflation rate even at 6.8 percent, projected almost a year ahead is also beyond the RBI tolerance rate. Das, however, does not mention why the policy rates should remain low. It seems he is giving the large businesses a signal that for the next one year there would not be any change in rates. Banks are losing almost on all operations, including ATM operations and losses due to digital transactions. The only positive is the interest earnings. This too has been cut by the RBI leading the banks to incur losses continuously leading to poorly manned banks and customer services. Low lending rates on daily basis facilitate immoral practices at virtually no cost. The public sector banks slip into losses and it is tried to be covered up through mergers. Whether it disguises many critical crises or not, are matters of probe. In such situation, how all the six members of the Monetary Policy Committee unanimously vote is beyond comprehension. It should have ensued a proper discussion and not to continue with the accommodative stance of monetary policy as long as necessary- at least through the current financial year and into the next year -to revive growth on a durable basis and mitigate the impact of covid19, while ensuring that inflation remains within the target going forward. They know it well that for the next one year the chance of remaining it contained is virtually not possible. The RBI must have its own assessment but it should have listened to the Moody’s Investors Service warnings about the banking sector in Asia and particularly in India. It warns of fall in investments in India and Sri Lanka affecting the capacity of banks to extend loans. The Fitch rating agency says consumer spending to reduce by 12.6 percent. The Standard & Poor’s(S&P) also does not project a very promising picture. Amid such scenario the RBI decision is fraught with risk for the banking sector and the economy as a whole.

DailyDevotion The Offering of the Natural

It is written that Abraham had two sons: the one by a bondwoman, the other by a freewoman. —Galatians 4:22 Paul was not dealing with sin in this chapter of Galatians, but with the relation of the natural to the spiritual. The natural can be turned into the spiritual only through sacrifice. Without this a person will lead a divided life. Why did God demand that the natural must be sacrificed? God did not demand it. It is not God’s perfect will, but His permissive will. God’s perfect will was for the natural to be changed into the spiritual through obedience. Sin is what made it necessary for the natural to be sacrificed. Abraham had to offer up Ishmael before he offered up Isaac (see Genesis 21:8-14). Some of us are trying to offer up spiritual sacrifices to God before we have sacrificed the natural. The only way we can offer a spiritual sacrifice to God is to “present [our] bodies a living sacrifice…” (Romans 12:1). Sanctification means more than being freed from sin. It means the deliberate commitment of myself to the God of my salvation, and being willing to pay whatever it may cost. If we do not sacrifice the natural to the spiritual, the natural life will resist and defy the life of the Son of God in us and will produce continual turmoil. This is always the result of an undisciplined spiritual nature. We go wrong because we stubbornly refuse to discipline ourselves physically, morally, or mentally. We excuse ourselves by saying, “Well, I wasn’t taught to be disciplined when I was a child.” Then discipline yourself now! If you don’t, you will ruin your entire personal life for God. God is not actively involved with our natural life as long as we continue to pamper and gratify it. But once we are willing to put it out in the desert and are determined to keep it under control, God will be with it. He will then provide wells and oases and fulfill all His promises for the natural (see Genesis 21:15-19).

Recover Better: Stand Up for Human Rights

r e e t i n g s ! H ow honored I am to be speaking on Human Rights Day. Allow me the liberty to make some comments around the theme of “Recover Better: Stand Up for Human Rights.” This year, without a doubt, Covid-19 has shaken many social, political, and economic assumptions and conventions of our modern age. Significant power shifts are happening. The ground we stand on is being upturned. Institutions are being stripped bare to reveal their actual appearance. During such times, truth—about others and about ourselves—appears to be increasingly relative. False stories are widely distributed and quickly digested. Information is power, and the status quo and its many proxies have tightened their grip on the narratives and words that circulate in our society. Indeed, this trend extends to our conversation of human rights itself. The tendency of those in power is to patronize the vocabulary of “rights” and leave aside the wide range of ethics, laws, and policies to which rights are implied. To an extent, human rights have always been vulnerable to misinterpretation and misrepresentation. Indeed, I have expressed in the past that the language

of rights can be coopted by various groups for various purposes.Often, in this case, there is no way to arbitrate rights to common belonging. Rather, rights defined in such terms only end up serving the interests of “birds of the same feather.” Never theless, Human Rights Day gives us a great opportunity to reclaim the idea from its abstract and cynical categories. In this light, the vocabulary of rights must be placed in its practical and universal perspective. The French philosopher and political activist Simone Weil said: “The notion of obligations comes before that of rights” A right is not effectual by itself, but only in relation to the obligation to which it corresponds. This to me, in context, is the true meaning of human rights. The effectiveness of rights lies in the context of human relationships and the obligations we have to each other. To quote Weil again: “There exists an obligation towards every human being for the sole reason that he or she is a human being, without any other condition requiring to be filled.” Reasonably, without going further into other histories, the Indo-Naga political talks need to be identified and named in its de facto platform. The obligation, in this case, is

to pursue a political solution for what is inevitably a political issue. This is the honorable and right thing to do. Admittedly, the Naga political history is a protracted one. In our long history, various parties, including the Government of India (GoI), have been obstructed by—and have overcome—many hurdles. During this process, human temperament and emotions have surged, often to the detriment of all. We must remain vigilant, however, to never permit these less desirable qualities to engulf the hard-earned relationship that the GoI and Nagas have built. By keeping in mind our common obligations to each other, we also remember our common humanity amidst our differences. In this light, the Naga public needs to patiently understand the key bodies in the peace process. We must also recognize that this process is mentally and emotionally draining for all sides. The irony of our situation, for better or worse, is that discipline is most needed when we are most drained. It takes discipline to keep from blaming those who differ from us. It takes discipline to practice reciprocity. It takes discipline to be obliged to each other. At the center of the Indo-Naga political peace process, Nagas must accept the hard fact that

political idealism without a fitting form in its historical setting will only remain a subjective concept. That is, freedom takes hard work. It takes a constructive mindset. Freedom clearly implies a high degree of responsibility towards building structures—whether these are solid foundations upon which our houses will stand; wide bridges that will connect us to each other; or paved roads that will take us to our destinations. Minus this fundamental sense of responsibility, freedom will never exist. GoI has officially signed the Framework Agreement with the NSCN/GPRN and the Agreed Positions with the seven Naga National Political Groups. Given this, it will be futile for the two Naga political groups to undo the other and to keep on mustering the Naga primordial instinct of rightness over the other. The political obligation from the side of the GoI is an achievement that should not be undone. Nagas will do well to listen to the age-old principle that one cannot stand too long by standing on another’s misery. Attempting to position oneself only by targeting the other is no position at all. Anger and hate is not a political position. A symptom of such a making is the prevalence

of one-dimensional mindsets that leads to communicating an incredible contempt for the other. Unlike genuine constructive criticism, contempt is dangerously toxic because it assumes a moral superiority in the individual or the group. The rhetoric coming out of the jurisdictional and national disputes is a threat to our common interest. The seventy years of Naga political narrative is like basket that is filled with the tragic fruit of animosity and disagreements. This is a result of many factors, including the harm inflicted on us, and the harm we have inflicted upon others. Should we continue with our usual way of doing things, or should we reconsider our actions so that our children may benefit from trees that bear sweet fruit? Many conscientious Nagas who are sensitive to our common aspirations have expressed the urgent need to be creatively imaginative. In recent days and months, scholars like Dr. Paul Pimomo, Dr. Dolly Kikon, Dr. Venusa Tinyi, and Dr. Akum Longchari have brought our attention to ideas and possibilities beyond our usual habits and perceptions. These ideas and viewpoints are crucial at the moment. It is my strong belief that our enlightened Naga minds can

be catalysts that will stir our collective consciousness, which will ultimately result in action that is deliberate and impactful. One big task towards this goal is to un-learn certain ingrained myths about our identity, boundaries, and rights that have taken a hold of us on cultural, political, and individual levels. Therefore, the first thing for Nagas to do today is to think of where we stand. I have some questions we can all think about: How do we move away from our present mindsets and emotional rhetoric into a more cooperative and sustainable way of doing things? How do we build goal-oriented organizations and selfsustaining institutions that will ensure the safeguarding of our common interests and collective future? This political imagination should outdo the idea that no fitting forms are available at our disposal. While the essence of Naga nationalism remains, the fitting forms must come from the Nagas. In this sense, if humanity is God’s creation, then our foundation rests on the upholding of human rights. Above all, we have an obligation to each other, whether neighbor or stranger. It is on this foundation that we must build our house. Kuknalim. Wati Aier

How Farm Bills will footprint the consumers Advancing pandemic: A view point

T

he contentious Farmers Bill 2020 recently passed by both the parliament includes the following character, the Farmers Produce Trade and Commerce (Promotion and Facilitation) Act 2020,Farmers (Empowerment and Protection) Agreement and Price Assurance and Farm Services Act 2020 and the Essential Commodities Act 2020. This Bill was enacted to create a sense of self monopoly whereby each farmers will have their prerogatives and sell their churn out items without involving any third party as the negotiators. The Government of India considers this bill as pro farmers and highly perceives it could double the income of the farmers as prescribed in the double income of the farmers 2022. Theoretically the bill looks famously promising and highly feasible which could enhance the farmers’ woes. But the technical exertion could route the other way round. The farmers enthusiastically started protesting against the bill on the account of the aforementioned clauses. The farmers believe it will saliva injustice and hence do away with APMC (Mandis) and the famed MSP (minimum support price) regulated by the Government of India and instead form a draconian arena where the benefit will solely be focused in the hands of the capitalism. This will initially generate a form of Marxian era where the farmers will replicate the so called ‘have-nots’ ie workers who were exploited inadvertently by the “haves” the capitalist posh. The protest has escalated intensively especially in northern states with Punjab and Haryana as the front runners. They have clamoured for a change in the aforementioned clauses and instead implored to strengthen MSP to be officially declared as a legal right so as to bump off the capitalist exploitation of power bargaining. The farmers also fear that they will have teeny-weeny scope

in contracts with the private buyers. With more than 85 percent of farmers owning less than two hectares of land it becomes ultimately laborious for them to negotiate with the large scale buyers at first hand. The Essential Commodities (Amendment) Bill 2020 which seeks to deregulate commodities like cereals, pulses, oilseeds, edible oils, onion and potatoes from the list of essential commodities will infact pose a grave potential danger to the market force and it can accidentally impact the consumers. The price triggered formula as postulated will infact create a situation of a drowning man who glimpse powerless to reach the sea shore. With these items being kept in liberalised mode for a lengthy time span and without any scrutiny will doggedly elevate the rise in price and impact the consumers. The jump up in prices of this significant item will boost the inflation as consumers will not be able to afford it with ease. The incessant stocking can also lead to counterfeit price fluctuations and meagre prices for farmers after harvest. The infamous hoarding will take place as food particles can be stored for longer duration without the fear of being prosecuted. This will also elevate price upsurge as storage of such items for a prolonged period will maneuver the man’s conceived minds more consistent as a cunning fox by advancing the price of such items when scarcity booms to gain enormous profit as those items are a necessity with price rise or fall. With APMC restrained ,the farmers will now have to deal or bear the expenses of the transportation or the labour cost which will coincidentally unsolicit their income and likewise boost the price rise in the market. The ongoing protest will also impact the market force with high chances of price rise in almost all the commodities due to supply constraint. In a state like Nagaland where we

are exponentially depended on the outside factor for the survival. The embargo and the price rise of such items will impact the consumers most as shortage of supply or price rise will affect our states economy. With APMC absent, it will also have an indirect impact on our state revenue as taxes charged at mandis will pause as private investors will start purchashing face to face from the farmers. With small and marginal farmers at galore prevalent in our state, APMC vocals a better window of opportunity and a sustainable environment and hence provides utmost security. In order to evade the relentless protest organised by the farmers fraternity which is more likely to impact the food items consumed by the people in the protracted sprint, the colossal measures needs to be reformed by the government in favour of the farmers with APMC enhancement instead of expunging it. The idea of obliterating the middle man should stand invalid as private investors will also keep the middlemen as the negotiators to deal with the farmers. Instead The negotiators should be kept at check to eschew corrupt practises. The Government should also invest in areas of agriculture importance and revamp the agriculture structure instead of relying on the private investors to do their homework. The main purpose of the private entities is to earn profit and they will therefore stoop so low in the initial stage to grab the customers by using artifice method with significantly low price or the discount method for a short span of time. The Gover nment should also declare MSP as the official legal rights of the farmers to avoid victimisation. The onus is now on the government to sweep the board the confidence of the farmers. It must unconditionally stick out to the farmers and empathetically listen to them. Tokato K Sumi, New Colony, Zunheboto

W

hen we were presented with the early 2020 issue of the European Journal of Cultural and Political Sociology, no one comprehended what the outbreak of the novel coronavirus, COVID-19 in Wuhan province, China, would mean to the world, to Europe, to any country or any single person in the weeks to come. A couple of month later, life as we knew it fundamentally changed. The mantras of today are “Stay at home”, “Stay safe” and “Social distancing”. Never would have imagined that almost all over the world, nation states ban individual free movement and the gathering of people. Normal sociallife and work has come to a halt. A well known German Sociologist, Ulrich Beck’s ‘risk society’ appears to be taking on new forms in current times. The effects of the pandemic on social inequality, urban life, citizenship, migration, and core periphery relations are already becoming visible, but will be only fully comprehensible in due course. What we have to face up to is unprecedented as far as contemporary generations are concerned, and will leave heavy marks, stigma and perhaps trauma for those who survive the virus and the lucky ones who are not being physically infected. The disaster is televised, and in the daily news, we increasingly see worn out faces of nurses, doctors, frontline workers and of all involved with keeping alive the livelihood in our neighbourhoods, cities and across the globe. Foremost, the rising numbers of mass deaths as result of the COVID-19 pandemic is streamed into our tem-

porarily (over) crowded home spaces, and is reversing the notion of public social life and culture. Empty city streets, closed businesses and people avoiding proximity of each other are a bleak reminder. Everything does not come back to life during springtime as, the month April seems to be the cruellest of months for this year. The ‘state of emergency’ not only affects the physical and psychological health of population but it equally affects the political rights and democratic status of citizens. We might have to reconsider the notion of European solidarity, cosmopolitanism and global humanity in the years to come. Therefore, I commercialize cultures; the amount of money at one’s disposal defines one’s opportunities to participate. This is equally true now that participation in social life has gone digital. Students have been challenged with uncountable digital challenges. Digital has taken over all our activities and without any warnings. The contradiction is such that, we were not allowed to used mobiles in classroom before whereas today in this pandemic we are forced to used at all times. But a time will come when this pandemic will be over, when we can go back to the streets, to have events without fear of contagion. As students, we are waiting for the day and time where our normal classes and old normalcy returns. We try to keep community alive with the tools that we have, and the way that we end up doing it has political implications. Sentirenla Walling, Class12 Arts, Modern College Kohima

Reader’s Post Sir,

Expensive Auto fares

I would like to bring to your notice the escalating amount of auto fares certain auto charges on the pretext of traffic jams and festive seasons. Yes, I agree that they are no less than the frontline workers who are risking their lives, by providing for the needs of the common people. However, the amount of money they charge have sky-rocketed after the onset of COVID-19. Prior to the inception of the highly contagious disease, it wasn’t much different either but on serious note, the respective authorities should levy a certain rate and also see to it that they carry sanitizers and wear masks too. Other states have taxi meters but Dimapur, Nagaland in general doesn’t. As a responsible citizen, I do not condone the act of arguing with people but the public transport drivers make it difficult for us. Also, the autos plying between Purana Bazaar and Chumukedima carries way more passengers than they are allowed to. Therefore, it is my earnest request to the esteemed authorities to monitor all such activities. Amenla Walling, 3rd Mile, Dimapur

BJP president’s convoy attacked in West Bengal Mamata claims it’s staged, amit Shah says situation ‘worrying’

Diamond Harbour (WB), Dec 10 (PTI): Stones rained in a torrent, shattering windscreens of vehicles on Thursday as the convoy of BJP chief J P Nadda came under attack by alleged TMC supporters in West Bengal, leaving several people injured, party leaders and eyewitnesses said. An angry Nadda called the attack “unprecedented” and alleged the state has slipped into “complete lawlessness and goonda raj”. West Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress supremo Mamata Banerjee insinuated the attack was staged. “Every day they (BJP activists) are coming out (for rallies) with firearms. They are slapping themselves and blaming it on the Trinamool Congress. Just think of the situation. They are roaming around with the BSF, CRPF, Army, CISF....then why are you so scared,” Banerjee said in Kolkata. Several union ministers, including Home Minister Amit Shah, and West

Bengal Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar reacted with indignation over the incident. “Bengal has descended into an era of tyranny, anarchy and darkness under the Trinamool rule. The manner in which political violence has been institutionalized and brought to the extreme in West Bengal under TMC rule is sad and worrying,” Shah tweeted. Dhankhar accused the state administration of failing to act in spite of his alerting the chief secretary and the director general of police. The governor tweeted that he had intimated the state administration, at 8.19 am and 9.05 am on Thursday, of the possibility of the collapse of law and order during a BJP meeting at Diamond Harbour in South 24 Parganas district. “Concerned at alarming reports of anarchy and lawlessness @MamataOfficial indicating ruling party harmads on rampage at BJP President Convoy and political police @WBPolice

in support,” the governor wrote. “Am sure they have immunity and protection of political police with administration extension of political outfit,” Dhankhar wrote, adding “Events indicate total abdication of lawful authority.” The vehicles in Nadda’s motorcade were attacked when he was on way to Diamond Harbour to address a meeting of party workers, resulting in injuries to several BJP leaders including party general secretary Kailash Vijayvargiya.

Nadda, who was in a bullet-proof vehicle, was unharmed. Mamata Baner jee’s nephew Abhishek Banerjee represents Diamond Harbour in the Lok Sabha. Those present at the scene said scores of alleged TMC workers, some carrying sticks and iron rods and others armed with bricks, blocked the road near Sirakul in South 24 Pargana district adjoining Kolkata with motorcyles. Shouting slogans against the BJP and the media, they squabbled with

police when they tried to clear the way. As the convoy tried to move past the protesting crowd, many ran alongside the vehicles, ominously thumping them with fists, sticks and iron rods, smashing windscreens and window panes. Another batch of protesters, who had blocked a stretch of road a few kilometres away, advanced menacingly at the sight of the motorcade, pounded it with bricks. Vijayvargiya and party vice president Mukul Roy were injured in the hand, while the latter’s security guard was hit with a stone in the head. As some journalists came out of the vehicles, they were pushed and shoved back, according to a PTI reporter accompanying Nadda. Po l i c e u l t i m a t e l y chased away the protesters and Nadda managed to reach the meeting venue. “What I witnessed today is shocking and unprec-

edented. West Bengal has become a state characterised by utter lawlessness and intolerance. The administration has completely failed and goonda raj prevails,” Nadda later told a meeting of party workers. “If I have reached here for the meeting it is due to Maa Durga’s grace...I can imagine how difficult it is for common party workers in Bengal,” he said. The BJP leader asserted the days of the TMC government are numbered. “We have to defeat this goonda raj and we will,” he said, adding “the state has reached a new low under the misrule of the TMC government”. “Mukul Roy and Kailash Vijayvargiya were injured in the attack today. It is a matter of shame for democracy. There isn’t a car in our convoy which was not attacked. I am safe because I was travelling in a bullet-proof car. This state of lawlessness and intolerance in West Bengal has to end,” he said.

“We protested outside Sisodia’s residence to make it clear that the BJP workers are capable of answering any form of challenge,” he said. The Delhi BJP had on Wednesday lodged a police complaint against Sisodia and AAP leader Durgesh Pathak, alleging that they were conspiring to kill leaders of the party-ruled municipal corporations. Pathak had rubbished the allegation, saying the BJP has a habit of mixing random audios with random videos to “defame and malign” the image of people.

On Tuesday, observing that humanity is most important, the Bombay High Court had referred to the alleged theft of Navlakha’s spectacles inside the prison and called for the need to conduct a workshop for jail officials to sensitise them on the needs of prisoners. A division bench of Justices S S Shinde and M S Karnik said it had learnt about how the spectacles were stolen inside the jail and the prison authorities refused to accept the new spectacles sent by his family through courier.

Mumbai, Dec 10 (PTI): Maharashtra Home Minister Anil Deshmukh has ordered a probe into Taloja prison authorities allegedly denying Elgar ParishadMaoist links case accused Gautam Navlakha spectacles after they refused to accept a parcel sent by the latter’s family. Deshmukh made the announcement on Twitter. “ B h i m a - Ko r e g a o n case accused Gautam Navlakha denied spectacles by jail authorities as they refused to accept parcel sent by his family,” Deshmukh said in the tweet. “I have ordered an inquiry in this matter. I believe this situation should have been handled humanly & such incidents need to be avoided in future,” he added.

New Delhi, Dec 10 (PTI): The AAP on Thursday claimed that the house of Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia was “attacked by BJP goons”. The Delhi BJP, however, refuted the allegations, saying their protest was peaceful. The BJP workers earlier staged a protest near Sisodia’s residence over an alleged conspiracy to kill mayors and leaders of the party-ruled municipal corporations staging an indefinite dharna demanding payment of dues from the Kejriwal government. (From p-1) MCCI also demanded that innocent victims of his crimes be compensated immediately. According to MCCI, the accused had since November 3, 2020 stolen a range of commodities worth about Rs.2 lakh from at least seven shops on different occasions. Explaining the modus operandi of the accused, MCCI said he would appear at his targeted store with a visible shopping list, always well-presented, and place his orders like any regular festive shopper would. MCCI said he always had his face-mask and hoodies on while maintaining sufficient physical distance from people around him and politely interacted

with the salesmen effectively deceiving them without revealing his identity but at the same time winning their confidence. He would then ask the cashier to prepare the bill to make his payment while convincing the unsuspecting salesmen to load his supplies to his vehicle, which was often a hired taxi parked strategically at a safe distance. Then, on the pretext of drawing cash from a nearby ATM, he would leave the shop and calmly drive away without making any scene, all along keeping his taxi driver unawares, MCCI said. It said he also employed craftily improvised variants of his modus operandi and got away.

When reports of thefts were brought to its notice, MCCI said a deliberate and equally conniving scheme was laid to ensnare the accused to which he walked straight into on December 9 evening. MCCI said it gave the police specific information about the accused and was promptly arrested. It said the accused was currently under police custody at Police Station-1, Mokokchung. Meanwhile, MCCI has lauded the district administration and police for ensuring safety and security of its citizens. It also expressed appreciation to the district police personnel for their prompt action in arresting the accused.

Gen Shunji, who arrived here on Wednesday, was also accorded a guard of honour at IAF headquarters. The defence and strategic ties between India and Japan have been on an upswing in the last few years. In September, the two countries inked a landmark agreement that allowed their militaries to access each other’s bases for logistics support. The pact was signed in the backdrop of growing concerns over China’s military muscle flexing in the region.

(From p-1) He said the 16 point memorandum was then accepted by the 16 Naga tribes as an agreement after it was signed with the government of India. According to Dr. Jamir, the Aos have led in all fields but today when Nagas need unity among tribes, they should not shirk the responsibility as time has again come for them to shoulder the responsibility for the good of the Nagas. The programme was chaired by the office bearers of ASTD, while invocation was pronounced by Pastor, DAPF, N LipokJamir. Following India’s farmers protest closely: UK

LONDON, DEC 10 (PTI): The UK Foreign Office is closely following the protests by farmers in India, a government spokesperson said on Thursday as it clarified that Prime Minister Boris Johnson had “clearly misheard” a question in Parliament when he responded with Britain’s stance on the India-Pakistan dispute instead. The gaffe occurred during the weekly Prime Minister’s Questions (PMQs) session in the House of Commons on Wednesday, when Johnson reiterated that any dispute between India and Pakistan was for the two countries to settle bilaterally in response to a question by Opposition Labour MP Tanmanjeet Singh Dhesi about conveying British Sikh “anxieties” over the ongoing protests against agricultural reforms in India. A UK gover nment spokesperson said: “The Prime Minister clearly misheard the question in Parliament. The Foreign Office are following the issue of protests in India closely”. England’s entire tour of Belgium top year-end world 10-man East Bengal hold out India to be held at 3 venues rankings for third straight time for a draw with Jamshedpur

Players of East Bengal and Jamshedpur in action during the ISL match on Thursday.

PANAJI, DEC 10 (AGENCIES): A 10-man East Bengal managed to hold Jamshedpur to a goalless draw in the 2020-21 Indian Super League (ISL) match at the Tilak Maidan on Thursday. The Red and Golds’ registered their first point this season after four matches. Jamshedpur had plenty of chances to score but failed to convert and turn the point into three. Robbie Fowler made four changes to the East Bengal lineup. Sankar Roy, Eugeneson Lyngdoh, Mohammed Rafique and Jeje Lalpekhlua replaced Debjit Majumder, Surchan-

dra Singh, Wahengbam Angousana and Balwant Singh. Owen Coyle, on the other hand, made just one change to the Jamshedpur starting XI which won 2-1 against ATK Mohun Bagan. Aniket Jadhav came in for Jackichand Singh on the left flank. Jamshedpur started well and looked hungry for an early lead. Aniket Jadhav should have scored in the sixth minute when he found himself in a one-onone situation inside the box but he blasted the ball over the crossbar. East Bengal received a major blow in the 25th

minute when Eugeneson Lyngdoh was sent off for a high-footed challenge on Alex Lima. It was a harsh decision for the Kolkata club as Lyngdoh caught the ball before brushing his boot against Lima’s leg. Stephen Eze came agonisingly close to breaking the deadlock in the 38th minute when he attempted a header off Aitor Monroy’s dangerous delivery from a corner but the crossbar denied the centre-back a goal. M U M B AI , DEC 1 0 ( AG ENCIE S ) : I n d i a and England will play four tests, five Twenty20 matches and three onedayers in February-March in India with the highprofile series restricted to just three venues due to the COVID-19 pandemic, both cricket boards said on Thursday. The series will kick off on February 5 with Chennai hosting the opening two tests before the sides head to the Western Indian city of Ahmedabad to play the first international match at the world’s largest cricket stadium. The Motera stadium, with a capacity of 110,000, has displaced the Melbourne Cricket Ground as the world’s largest cricket stadium, and was inaugurated by U.S. President Donald Trump during his visit to India in February. The refurbished stadium will host the final two tests with the third to be played with pink balls under lights. Motera will also hold the five T20 internationals, which will work as warmups for both sides ahead of the World Twenty20 later in the year in India. “The prospect of becoming the first international side to play at the magnificent Sardar Patel Stadium in Ahmedabad

adds an extra dimension to the tour and I know will be something that is a highlight for both the players and management,” said Tom Harrison, the chief executive of England’s cricket board. Pune, situated about 150 kilometres from Mumbai, will host the final leg of the series consisting of three 50-over matches. England will arrive in Chennai directly from Colombo on Jan. 27 after playing two test matches in Sri Lanka. The series will be India’s first at home since South Africa’s tour in March was called off midway through due to the pandemic. The United Arab Emirates hosted the 2020 edition of the popular Indian Premier League due to the situation with the coronavirus in India, which has seen 9.77 million infections, the second-highest in the world after the United States, with a death toll nearing 142,000. “The BCCI prioritises health and safety of both teams and will leave no stone unturned to make sure that the tour is held adhering to all safety protocols agreed by the BCCI and ECB medical teams,” BCCI secretary Jay Shah said.

Zürich (Switzerland), DEC 10 (AGENCIE S ) : B e l g i u m we r e crowned FIFA’s team of the year for the third straight time after retaining the top spot ahead of world champions France in the latest world rankings released on Thursday, soccer’s world governing body said. While a total of 1,082 international games were played in 2019, the most since the rankings system was introduced in 1993, only 352 matches were held this year -- the fewest since 1987 -- due to the disruption caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Roberto Martinez’s Belgium won six of their eight games this year

as they booked their place in next year’s UEFA Nations League finals. The top four remained unchanged, with Brazil and England retaining their third and fourth ranking respectively. Portugal moved up to fifth, while both Spain (sixth) and Argentina (seventh) improved two places compared to last year. Hungary (40th) were the most improved side in the rankings this year, having gained 44 points and 12 places to break into the top 50. Marco Rossi’s side lost just once in eight matches to qualify for the Euro 2020 finals, which has been postponed until June-July next year due to COVID-19.

Skipper Williamson to miss second Paolo Rossi, who led Italy to 1982 World Cup, dies at 64 Test against WI; Latham to lead NZ

Kane Williamson

WELLINGTON, DEC 10 (IANS): New Zealand skipper Kane Williamson will miss the second and final Test against West Indies beginning Friday at the Basin Reserve in order to be with his pregnant wife. Will Young will return for his second Test and bat at number three while Tom Latham will lead the Black Caps, head coach

Gary Stead confirmed on Thursday. Williamson’s wife Sarah is due to give birth to their first child in “mid to late December”, according to stuff.co.nz. “It’s a decision we’ve come to in the best interests of him and Sarah,” Stead said. “Kane’s not the first person to have a baby and

miss a Test match. Our thoughts and wishes are with Sarah and Kane at this time, and we want to make sure that first and foremost that mother and baby are well looked after,” he added. Young scored five on debut opening in Hamilton during the first match, while Williamson was in sublime form as he scored his highest Test score of 251 which helped the hosts thrash West Indies by an innings and 134 runs at the Seddon Park. Courtesy his performance, the New Zealand skipper jumped up two places to join India’s Virat Kohli at the number two spot in the ICC Test rankings for batsmen. Williamson gained 74 points, moving from 812 to 886. Latham garnered his career-best points tally of 733 and tenth place on the table, thanks to his innings of 86.

ROME, DEC 10 (AP): Paolo Rossi, who led Italy to the 1982 World Cup title and later worked as a soccer commentator in his home country, has died. He was 64. State-run RAI, where Rossi worked after his playing career, said Thursday he died of an incurable illness. RAI and other media cited an Instagram post by Rossi’s wife, Federica Cappelletti. She posted a picture of the couple with the caption “Per sempre,” Italian for “Forever.” In a Facebook post, Cappelletti added: “There will never be another one like you, unique, special, after you there is absolute nothingness.” Rossi had a remarkable career comeback, leading Italy to the World Cup title after returning from a suspension following a betting scandal in 1980. He scored six goals at the tournament in Spain,

including a hat trick in a 3-2 win over Brazil and the opening goal in a 3-1 win over West Germany in the final. He was also voted FIFA player of the year in 1982. The Italian soccer federation said it would fly flags at half-staff in a sign of mourning. “We have lost a friend and an icon of our soccer,” federation president Gabriele Gravina said. He took an entire country by the hand, which rejoiced in the streets, for him and with him. He is permanently linked to the Azzurri and has inspired generations of forwards with his style.” Former teammate Stefano Collovati told RAI Radio 1 that he received the news from the phone chat used by the 1982 team members, many of whom expressed devastation at Rossi’s passing. Rossi won two Serie A titles and a European Cup while playing for Juventus. He also

played for AC Milan before moving into sportscasting at Italy’s top networks. RAI sports presenter Enrico Varriale, who worked with Rossi, posted on Twitter about the star

forward’s death. “Very sad news: Paolo Rossi left us,” Varriale wrote. “Unforgettable Pablito, who made us all fall in love in that summer of ‘82 and who has been a

precious and competent workmate at RAI in recent years. RIP dear Paolo.” In a statement, Serie A president Paolo Dal Pino said the Italian league was in mourning.

Neymar hat-trick as PSG crush Basaksehir 5-1 in suspended game PARIS/MADRID/ MUNICH/ MANCHESTER, (AGENCIES): Neymar bagged a hat-trick as Paris St Germain topped Champions League Group H with a 5-1 home victory over Istanbul Basaksehir on Wednesday, a day after the game was suspended amid an alleged racist incident. The PSG and Basaksehir players, as well as the three field referees, took a knee before kickoff one day after both teams walked off in protest after the Turkish side had accused the assistant referee of using a racist word against their assistant coach Pierre Webo. Neymar struck three times and Kylian Mbappe scored his first goals in the competition in a year as PSG, who had already qualified for the last 16, advanced from the group stage with 12 points, ahead of RB Leipzig thanks to their better headto-head record against the German side. Bayern Munich earned a 2-0 victory over Lokomotiv Moscow in their final Champions League Group A game on Wednesday with second-half goals from Niklas Suele and Eric-Maxim Choupo-Moting. The Bavarians, last season’s winners who qualified for the last 16 with two matches to spare, fielded a largely second-string team with the pressure on Lokomotiv, desperate for a win to secure third place in the standings and a Europa League spot. Bayern had the upper hand but carved out only few scoring chances in the first half, with top scorer Robert Lewandowski sidelined due to a minor injury. Sergio Aguero came off the bench to score for Manchester City as they cruised past Olympique Marseille 3-0 in Champions League Group C on Wednesday. The result means the French team finished bottom of the group and failed to make the Europa League spot despite third-placed Olympiakos losing 2-0 to group runners-up Porto. City were already assured of top spot and ahead of Saturday’s Manchester derby rested keeper Ederson and gave a start to American back-up goalkeeper Zack Steffen. Argentine striker Aguero, who has struggled after knee surgery in the off-season, came off the bench in the 67th minute and took just 10 minutes to score, poking home after Marseille keeper Steve Mandanda failed to hold Nathan Ake’s header from a corner. City finished on 16 points, a club record haul from the competition’s group stage.

Salah sets club record as Liverpool held at Midtjylland

Mohamed Salah became Liverpool’s all-time top scorer in the Champions League as they were held to a 1-1 draw away to Denmark’s Midtjylland on Wednesday having already secured top spot in Group D. Salah put the Premier League champions ahead in the first minute, latching on to a poor backpass and bursting goalwards before slipping the ball past goalkeeper Jesper Hansen. The goal was Salah’s 22nd in the Champions League making him the club’s record scorer in the competition.
