Blockade: 7 DCCIs look beyond Upper Assam DIMAPUR, DEC 2 (NPN): Against the backdrop of ongoing economic blockade imposed by some Assambased organisations restricting movement of vehicles along National Highway 702D at Mariani under Jorhat district of Assam, the business community of Mokokchung, Tuensang, Wokha, Zunheboto, Longleng, Noklak and Kiphire districts Wednesday said it would seek alternative means of doing business by looking beyond Jorhat and Upper Assam. In a joint press release, Mokokchung Chamber of Commerce & Industry (MCCI) president Tsükti Longkumer, Tuensang Chamber of Commerce & Industry (TCCI) president Dorothy Chang, Zunheboto Chamber of Commerce & Industry (ZCCI) president Kikheto Muru, Longleng Chamber of Commerce & Industry (LCCI) president A Bonshi Phom, Wokha Chamber of Commerce & Industry (WCCI) president Renpithung Kikon, Kiphire Chamber of Commerce & Industry (KCCI) president Litingse Sangtam, Mon Chamber of Commerce &

Industry (MCCI) president N Ünko SN said they had been minutely observing the situation in close coordination with the respective district authorities. The signatories said that efforts have been made to resolve the issue, but the problem was yet to be resolved. They said that the Assam-based organizations imposing the economic blockade failed to comprehend the reality of the situation.
The business community of seven districts said state of Assam faces afflicting border disputes with all of its neighbouring states. Stating that the interstate border disputes were political in nature, the signatories said Assam-Nagaland case was exacerbated by historical wrongs, which can never be resolved by economic blockades imposed by rogue elements. They said that economic blockades would, in fact,

DIMAPUR, DEC 2 (NPN): Since solution to the protracted Indo-Naga political issue is not confined to the present state of Nagaland, and while Naga integration will be pursued through democratic political process, WC, NNPGs said the issue of integration cannot stop Government of India (GoI) from announcing a solution. However, consultation with neighbouring states remains equally important, the committee stated in a statement. According to WC, NNPGs, Centre’s position was clear and unchanged that negotiations have been completed, all mutually agreed matters taken to a higher table and it is only a matter of timing as to when government of India deemed it appropriate to announce to Naga people. The committee emphasised that this was not the time for Nagas to be apprehensive or nervous, nor to fall prey to desperate in-
terpretations of facts on the ground. Calling for living in reality and not in illusion, the committee said this was the hour for Naga people to be cautious, prayerful and be aware of restless and desperate elements. The committee asserted that it retained “what is practical and that which entrenches our history and political right” and sought utmost solidarity and prayer support from Naga people. Meanwhile, Centre’s interlocutor to Naga peace talks and governor RN Ravi held a meeting with WC, NNPGs convener N Kitovi Zhimomi, co-conveners Zhopra Vero, Isak Sumi, Z Hozheto Chophy, Kiumukam, Toshi Walling, P Tikhak and Raitu Chawang, co-ordinator Alezo Venuh and secretary Ghukiho T Zhimo at police guest house at Chumukedima here on Wednesday.
only strain the age-old ties between the people of the two neighbouring states and make it impossible to make room for any meaningful discourse to resolve the contentious border issue. Further, they said that border dispute between Assam and Nagaland is sub judice with the matter pending verdict at the Supreme Court. They also said that forceful obstruction of National Highways and restricting movement of essential commodities were not only illegal, but also violations of human rights. The signatories said that the government of Assam and its authorities were very well aware of those glaring facts and were duty bound to uphold rule of law. They admitted that seven districts of Nagaland were “almost entirely dependent” on the markets of upper Assam, particularly Jorhat, for their trade and commerce. However, the ongoing economic blockade was causing much inconvenience to the affected Nagaland districts, which they said
was rather damning for the economy and the business community of upper Assam. If the economic blockade was not lifted soon, the business bodies of seven districts said the business community including traders and farmers in upper Assam would confront “those reprobates” imposing the illegitimate and meaningless blockade at Mariani. The seven bodies have, therefore, appealed to the peaceful and right thinking citizens of Assam, the government of Assam, the authorities at Jorhat and the business community of upper Assam to intervene and persuade those responsible for “this pathetic drama” to lift the economic blockade. They termed as “unfortunate” that a few individuals with vested interests have taken to ransom the people of the two neighbouring states. “Let good sense prevail and ensure that local assembly constituency political interests do not sever the cordial ties between the two peoples enjoyed since time immemorial,” the signatories remarked.

IMA to withdraw non-essential, non-COVID services on Dec 11 NEW DELHI, DEC 2 (PTI): Indian Medical Association (IMA) on Tuesday gave a call to all doctors practicing modern medicine to withdraw non-essential and non-COVID services on December 11 in protest against a Central Council of Indian Medicine notification which authorises post-graduate practitioners in specified streams of Ayurveda to be trained to perform general surgical procedures. Emergency services will function along with ICUs and CCUs but no elective surgical case will be posted, the doctors’’ body said. Stating that the notification by the Central Council of Indian Medicine (CCIM) to allows the legal practice of surgeries by Ayurveda practitioners and the formation of four committees by NITI Aayog for the integration of all systems of medicine will only lead to “mixopathy”, the Indian Medical Association (IMA) demanded an immediate withdrawal of both. “Launching the freedom struggle of modern medicine from the forces
of mixopathy, IMA has directed public demonstration activities and withdrawal of non-essential and non-COVID services on December 11, 2020, from 6 AM to 6 PM,” it said in a statement. “The recent policy tilt as evidenced in the medical pluralism advocated by the National Education Policy 2020 and the four committees of NITI Aayog for officially integrating the systems of medicine in medical education, practice, public health and administration as well as research ostensibly for a one nation one system policy will ring the death knell of modern medicine system as a whole,” IMA national president Dr Rajan Sharma said. “The notification of the amendment to the CCIM Act on postgraduate Ayurveda surgery and the entitlement to study and practice independently have to be seen as another step in advancing and legitimising mixopathy,” he said. IMA has also given a call for a public demonstration on December 8. Adhering to COVID-19 protocols,
the demonstrations will be held in small groups of 20 participants between 12 noon to 2 PM. All the participants will wear white aprons and sport a stethoscope, along with showcasing placards with slogans against mixopathy, the statement said. “The IMA demands withdrawal of the CCIM order and dissolution of the NITI AAYOG committees for integration. IMA appeals to the government to consider the sensitivity of the medical fraternity and take appropriate steps. “IMA will be constrained to intensify the agitation until the steps towards implementing mixopathy are abandoned. IMA has appealed to all the sister professional speciality organisations, the organisations of medical college teachers, government doctors, resident doctors associations apart from medical students and hospitals associations to support its cause to retain the separate identity and existence of modern medicine,” IMA secretary general Dr RV Asokan said.
Convene special Par session to Phase-II indefinite agitation repeal farm laws: Farmers to govt successful on day two: ENSF
NEW DELHI, DEC 2 (PTI): Protesting farmers on Wednesday demanded the central government call a special session of Parliament to repeal new farm laws and threatened to block other roads of the national capital if their demands are not met. Addressing a press conference, Krantikari Kisan Union president Darshan Pal accused the Centre of dividing farmers organisations by projecting the ongoing protests as Punjab-centric. Re presentatives of farmers organisations from other parts of the country will also be involved under Kisan Samyukt Morcha to decide the future course of action against the new farm laws, he said. Pal said that representatives of farmer organisations will give their point-wise (Cont’d on p-8) objections to the Union min-
isters at a meeting scheduled to take place on Thursday. “The Centre should call a special session of Parliament to repeal new three farm laws. We will continue our agitation till these farm laws are repealed,” Pal told reporters. Another farmer leader Gurnam Singh Chadoni said that if the Centre does not withdraw the laws, more steps will be taken in the coming days to press their demands. The number of protesters swelled at Delhi border points on Wednesday. Police stepped up security after thousands blocked key gateways into the national capital. Before the press conference, leaders of around 32 farmer organisations held a meeting which was also attended by Bhartiya Kisan Union leader Rakesh Tikait at the Singhu border. The talks between the
Centre and agitating farmer unions on Tuesday failed to end the standoff, and the two sides will now meet again on December 3. The farmer unions rejected the government’s offer to set up a committee to look into issues raised by them and said they will intensify their stir until their demands are met. “After our meeting, Rakesh Tikait ji was called by the government for a meeting on Tuesday. He is in with us... It is not Punjabcentric agitation, but it belongs to all farmers of the country... We have the support of farmers from Kerala, Odisha, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan and other states against the new farm laws,” Pal said. Farmers from the neighbouring states of Punjab and Haryana have been camping at five border points of Delhi for a week now.
DIMAPUR, DEC 2 (NPN): Eastern Naga Students Federation (ENSF) on Wednesday informed that second phase of the “proposed democratic indefinite agitation” on day two passed off peacefully and successfully. In a press release, ENSF president Sepili L Sangtam said that six federating units locked down government offices and restricted movement of government registered vehicles at their respective headquarters. On day two, ENSF said two vehicles were seized by the federating units in two different jurisdictions. Meanwhile, the federation has directed all the six federating units that the phase-ii of day three indefinite democratic agitation would remain the same. ENSF has expressed gratitude to the six federat-
ing units for their continued support and cooperation for the cause.

Cong lauds Ravi for honouring Imkongliba Naga Hoho flays Gov’s DIMAPUR, DEC 2 (NPN): Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee (NPCC) president K Therie extended his heartfelt gratitude on behalf of all Congressmen and women to governor RN Ravi for honouring Naga People’s Convention (NPC) chairman Dr Imkongliba Ao by presenting a bust to the people of Nagaland. As one of the early educated persons who grew with the Naga political movement, Imkongliba gave his life for the people, Therie stated in a press release, adding “we owe them for all that we are today”. Appreciating the wisdom of 16-points, he said words were insufficient to express gratitude to Jawaharlal Nehru too for providing Article 371A. He recalled that NPC was organised after Indian forces advanced to defeat FGN that was raised after 1954 to resist aggression. In
1956-57, many villages were burnt down, people tortured and killed, while many lived in the jungles for years, living off forest vegetation and wildlife. In this backdrop, Therie said NPC was organised to represent the voice of people, adding that in the beginning, NNC/FGN also joined in the discussions but later backed out. Admitting that Nagaland has not been able to develop like other States although it was the 16th State and completed 58 years of Statehood, Therie remarked “we are fighting against ego. “People who cannot sacrifice time, health and wealth are talking more than those holding rifles. People who fear crackers are braving nuclear power. People who cannot live without grants and Finance Commission awards are talking of selfdependency. One is free to express but should also be
realistic and not mislead. We are supposed to be God’s children,” the release stated. Clarifying that Congress has no objection if someone can improve the State and that was how the party had offered talks with no conditions, Therie however cautioned that “talks with no condition” was not a means to live but to find solution. Delay in solution has destroyed the opportunities of development and job creation in the State, he pointed out. He said, “For people like me who cannot fight by giving time, health and wealth, must contribute wisdom in building the State to provide education, generate jobs and develop a vibrant economy.” He said he believed that the vision of Imkongliba and the founding fathers of Nagaland were to raise their children with abundance of opportunities.
DIMAPUR, DEC 2 (NPN): Naga Hoho (NH) has expressed shock at Government of India’s (GoI) interlocutor and governor RN Ravi’s statement on the eve of 58th Statehood Day glorifying the “controversial Naga People’s Convention (NPC) and creation of controversial Statehood.” Hoho president HK Zhimomi and general secretary K Elu Ndang in a press communiqué declared that they cannot support such “abusive statement” from the interlocutor and condemn it outright. NH said they had the notion that Ravi was unlike other interlocutors in the past and had great hope that during his tenure something could be worked out as he had understood the Naga political problem and its history of more than 70 years. “We never expected such antagonistic statement from a brilliant, intelligent and self-respecting interlocutor who is supposed to be a harbinger of peace,” they added. NH said Ravi’s entire utterances were meant to create division among the Nagas in line with regional and artificial territory, adding it left it to the conscience of tribe hohos, student and women associations and civil society organisations (CSOs), particularly from Nagaland, to reflect at this crucial moment and ponder upon with all seriousness the issue it was raising and come out with an open mind whether his “antipathic statement” was (Cont’d on p-8) acceptable to the Nagas.
DIMAPUR, DEC 2 (NPN): Concerned AYUSH Doctors Association Nagaland (CADAN) has urged the state health and family welfare (H&FW) department to uphold the November 2, 2020 Gauhati High Court, Kohima Bench judgement that directed requisition of 21 AYUSH medical officer post to the Nagaland Public Service Commission (NPSC). CADN through its media cell that concerned AYUSH doctors had approached the High Court for filling 21 post of AYUSH medical officers through NPSC. They said the High Court did not interfere with the present recruitment process since the appointment were for a period of only one year, but categorically
directed requisition 21 AYUSH medical officer post to NPSC within 6 months from Number 2, 2020 so NPSC could start taking steps for regular recruitment and thereafter make appointment immediately on the expiry of one year period from the issuance of appointment orders pursuant to the present recruitment process. CADN said a copy of the judgement and letter had also been sent and received by chief secretary, commissioner & secretary H&FW and principal director H&FW. Concerned AYUSH doctors expressed hope that the department would uphold the court judgement and take necessary actions based on the judgement passed at the earliest. K Y M C

Assam MLA writes to Sangma on ILP Asks CM to ensure safety of Bengalis
S h illo n g, D e c 2 (PTI): Meghalaya’s demand to implement Inner Line Permit (ILP) in the state has met with stiff opposition from a Congress MLA in Assam, who said the 1873 legislation will result in “harassment” of bona fide Indian citizens visiting the hill state. K a m a l a k hya D e y Purkayastha, who met and submitted a letter to Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Tuesday, said the system, if enforced in Meghalaya, will obstruct regular movement of people from nearby states. An official source close to the CM, however, told PTI that Sangma has not found any merit in the the assertions made by Purkayastha. The Assam legislator, in his letter, said, “I earnestly submit before you to rethink on the issue (of ILP) and set this proposal aside for the greater interest
KD Purkayastha
of the northeastern community.” The ILP system, an offshoot of Bengal Eastern Frontiers regulations 1873, was introduced during the pre- Independence era to regulate entry of outsiders and safeguard the interest of tribals. It allows inward travel of an Indian citizen into a protected area for a limited period. Four nor theaster n states -- Arunachal Pradesh, Mizoram, Nagaland and Manipur -- currently have the system in place. The Meghalaya Assembly had in December last year unanimously adopted a resolution urging the Centre to implement the Inner Line
Arunachal MP flags ‘slow’ progress of road projects
Tapir Gao
Itanagar, Dec 2 (PTI): Raising concern over “slow” progress of construction of fifteen strategically important roads in Arunachal Pradesh, BJP leader and MP Tapir Gao on Wednesday urged the Centre to modify the guidelines for tendering process and expedite the completion of these projects. These road projects were sanctioned under the phase-I of Special Accelerated Road Development Programme in North East (SARDP-NE), he said, adding a report suggested that around 40 per cent works have been completed. “The guideline of the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways for the tendering process is a stumbling block. Bidders are required to quote less price than the estimated cost to bag a project. Contractors pay GST and meet other operational expenses. “Thus, it comes around 40 per cent of the actual cost, making the projects un-
viable for them. The existing norms need to be modified,” Gao told PTI. The BJP MP had raised the issue in Parliament during the Monsoon session and also wrote a letter to Union Minister Nitin Gadkari in October, seeking his intervention to complete the projects at the earliest. “The minister assured me that there would be re- tendering for six projects,” he said. Quality of existing road construction is being “compromised” and even many contractors are yet to start work, the Arunachal East MP said. He also said new border roads under SARDPNE Phase II have not been sanctioned due to delay in completion of current projects. Gao said strengthening of infrastructure is extremely important as neighbouring China has already built two-lane roads along the border. “We are lagging in terms of improving the road infrastructure along the McMahon Line,” he said. Gao claimed that the land acquisition issues have been resolved by the state and appealed to the Centre to expedite the completion of the ongoing road projects.
Permit (ILP) regime in the state. The Assam MLA further requested Sangma to ensure that Bengalis do not face any discrimination. He claimed that several Bengalis have been subjected to “physical and mental atrocities”. “I plead before you to immediately take measures to stop all kinds of harassment and discrimination against the Bengali citizens in Meghalaya. For the sake of maintaining peace and harmony, we would also expect you to give a clear message to those groups, who are banking on divisive stances,” Purkayastha said in his letter to Sangma. In October, posters with the message -- ‘All Meghalaya Bengalis are Bangladeshis’ -- were put on display in Shillong to “instigate inter-community conflicts”, he stated. “Bengalis residing in Meghalaya are not intruders or anti-nationals, they are bona fide citizens of India. Identifying all of them as ‘Bangladeshis’ is audacious and an act of
disrespect to the entire Bengali community,” he added. Rejecting the allegations, Meghalaya Home Minister Lahkmen Rymbui said the state government was committed to the safety of the people of Meghalaya. “The government has taken all steps necessary to provide security to its citizens,” he added. Meanwhile, the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) – an influential organisation in the state -- has threatened to implement its “own Inner Line Permit (ILP) system” if the Centre doesnt approve of the resolution passed by the state Assembly any time soon. “As an indigenous community, we would be compelled to implement our own ILP if the Centre takes more time to fulfil the long-pending aspiration of the people of the state,” KSU chief Lambokstarwell Marngar said on Tuesday at a programme near the India-Bangladesh border in the state.

The new Bailey bridge on NH-37 that was inaugurated by Manipur chief minister N Biren Singh. (NP)
Correspondent IMPHAL, DEC 2: Manipur chief minister N Biren Singh, during a speech after inaugurating a newly constructed bailey bridge of Irang River along NH-37 on Wednesday, announced a reward of Rs five lakh to 52nd Engineering Regiment of Indian Army. The reward is to acknowledge the good work done for the people of Manipur by the regiment in constructing the new bailey bridge after the old one collapsed a month ago. The old bailey bridge collapsed on November 1 morning while a loaded truck was crossing it. The truck plunged into the river, killing the driver. Chief minister N Biren Singh on Wednesday
inaugurated the newly installed bailey bridge and also laid the foundation stone for the long-awaited four-lane RCC bridge on the same river. The RCC bridge, for which the foundation stone was laid , will be constructed at an estimated cost of Rs 49.31 crore by NHIDCL. The occasion was attended by state forest and environment minister Awangbow Newmai, state chief secretary Dr Rajesh Kumar, GOC Major General VT Mathew of 57 Mountain Division and executive director of National Highway Infrastructure Development Corporation Ltd. (NHIDCL) among others. Speaking on the occasion, the chief minister said that the state earlier mainly relied on NH-2 (Imphal-
Dimapur road) for transportation of essential items as NH-37 (Imphal-Jiribam road) was not in a good shape. However, NH-37 has also improved a lot in the past few years thereby truly serving as the second lifeline of the state, he added. On the unfortunate collapse of Irang Bailey Bridge on the highway on November 1 last, he informed that the state government worked day and night in finding ways to restore it as soon as possible. The state government worked in coordination with 57 Mountain of the Indian Army led by Col Shashikumar and NHIDCL to reconstruct the bridge as soon as possible. He recalled the slipping down of the bridge during the construction process and said that owing to the tireless efforts of the 52nd Engineer Regiment of the Indian Army and NHIDCL, the bridge was successfully reinstalled within a short span of one month. Lauding the efforts of the Indian Army, the chief minister announced a reward of Rs five lakh with commendation certificate to the 52nd Engineering Regiment for the good work done for the people of the state.
He further assured to personally write to the Union ministry of defence to appreciate the regiment. The chief minister stated that he had also urged the NHIDCL to complete Makru and Barak RCC bridges by mid-January next year and RCC bridge on Irang river by December next year. Once these three RCC bridges were completed, there would be no bridge collapse, he said, adding that the economic condition of the people residing on the highway would also automatically improve. The chief minister also expressed his gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his concern about Manipur and the Northeast. Informing about the Rs 3000 crore Manipur Water Supply Project under the Jal Jeevan Mission - Har Ghar Jal Scheme, he assured that the government will take up concerted steps to provide tap water to every household of the state. He also expressed his thankfulness to the Prime Minister, Union home minister Amit Shah and Union road transport and highways minister Nitin Ghadkari approving construction of the four-lane Irang RCC bridge.
‘Khasi-Jaintia Development Council’ sought in Cachar, Assam
Correspondent
Shillong, Dec 2: Tribal Khasi and Jaiñtia people in Assam’s Cachar district have sought the intervention of Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma for the creation of a Khasi-Jaintia Development Council in Assam, a “major legitimate issue” of Khasis living in the neighbouring state. In a memorandum submitted to Sangma on Wednesday, the KhasiJa i n t i a D e ve l o p m e n t Council Demand Committee urged him to take initiatives for creation of the Council in the greater interest of the “vulnerable indigenous Khasi-Jaintia
tribes” living in Assam, especially in the Barak valley region, where its population is more than 1.70 lakh with more than 375 villages “in most interior part of the region far away from the main stream” and concentrated in all the three districts of Barak valley to almost all the 15 constituencies. The Committee claimed that the Union Ministry of Tribal Affairs (C&LM-I Division) had on December 15, 2014 directed the then Commissioner & Secretar y Department of Welfare Plain Tribes and Backward Classes (WPT&BC), Government of Assam to take “appropriate ac-
tion for creation of the ‘Khasi-Jaintia Development Council’. A memorandum jointly signed by Charles Rymbai and Sebastine Pakyntein, president and general secretary of the Committee, respectively however stated, “But the then State government has turned their deaf ears to our longstanding legitimate demands in addressing and promoting our socioeconomic, education, ethnic and cultural grievances to provide maximum participation in advancement within the framework of the Constitution of India.” The council members
added, “Despite having all historical primitive trades’ characteristic and traditional customary practices that existed since the 18th century till date, our tribe/ community is still being neglected, deprived, for which our existence was indeed very deplorable, pitiable and at sub-standard conditions, lagging behind in many basic amenities of livelihood, where developmental schemes and cultural uplift hardly or rarely are being benefited by our tribe/community.” Urging the Meghalaya Chief Minister to take up the matter with his Assam counterpart, the Council said, the plight of the two
communities would be addressed through creation of the council. The issue of creation of the council has taken urgency after a militant group - Hmar Peoples’ Convention – Democratic (HPC-D) reportedly threatened Khasi residents of Atukhal in Cachar district of Assam. The militants accused the Khasi residents of being responsible for the arrest of its members by the Assam police. The militant organization has threatened to shoot Khasi residents after which Director General of Police R Chandranathan contacted senior police officials of Assam and the
Superintendent of Police, Cachar District. During the discussion, the Director General of Police was informed that the Khasi villagers are presently taking shelter inside a church, which is being secured by the police officials. The Sub-Divisional Police Officer of the area had also visited the premises where the villagers are currently taking refuge and the matter is being supervised by the concerned police officials. The Khasi Students’ Union has warned HPC-D to refrain from causing harm to the tribal Khasi and Jaintia population in Cachar district.

The RSS leader said that Bhagwat, who arrived in Guwahati on Tuesday evening, would stay here until December 5 before leaving for Ar unachal Pradesh. “The RSS chief is scheduled to have a series of closed-door meetings with the selected pracharaks of seven northeast-

portant political matters. However, he will not address any public rally. Bhagwat’s visit to Assam assumes significance as the state is set to go to the polls in April-May next year, and the ruling BJP is undertaking all efforts to return to power in Assam for a second term.

The trophy was given in recognition of the professionalism, hard work, dedication and community oriented policing by Manipur police, the PRO said, and added that the department will continue to work hard with commitment and professionalism in the service of the people of the state in the years ahead. The police station was able to bag the trophy due to sincere efforts of the OC and his team under the strict guidance of Thoubal district SP Dr S Ibomcha and under the supervision of senior officers of Manipur police department under the able leadership of state DGP LM Khoute and overall supervision of chief minister N Biren Singh who is also home minister of the state, the statement asserted. The trophy for best police station in India was instituted after a directive
of the Prime Minister. Prime Minister during his address to a DsGP conference in Kutch, Gujarat in 2015 directed to lay down parameters for grading of police stations on their performance as well as feedback by citizens. A c c o r d i n g l y, t h e annual assessment of the best police stations scheme was undertaken to identify and recognise 10 best police stations of the country and also the best police station in a particular state or union territory. Under the initiative of the Union ministry of home affairs, in a view to encourage excellence in police work, Nongpok Sekmai police station was selected as the best police station of the country. The selection was done after a team of officials of Union home ministry inspected the police station on October 10, 2020 and checked various parameters.
5 shops gutted in major fire in Lahorijan
Shops razed in the fire.
Correspondent Bokajan, Dec 2: At least 5 shops were burnt to ashes after a devastating fire broke out in the Lahorijan area of interstate Assam-Nagaland border on Wednesday afternoon. The fire spread to the nearby buildings and caused panic and apprehension among residents. The burnt properties include a garments store, a hardware shop, a mobile repairing centre and a grocery store. Properties worth several crores were damaged in the fire. Shops and residences on the either sides of the area were also affected. Two fire fighting vehicles and a dozen fire tenders from the Nagaland Fire and Emergency Services battled the blaze and doused the flames. The Assam counterpart reached only after the fire was brought under control. Preliminary investigation suggested that the fire might have been caused by an electric short circuit. No
casualties have been reported till the filling of this report. The incident also exposed the lack of disaster readiness of the Assam state fire fighting agency which caused inordinate delay in reaching the spot after the fire was reported."Had the fire tenders from Nagaland not come in time and control the fire, it must have engulfed and burn down the entire area." A resident said.

CHENNAI, DEC 2 (AGENCIES): A former High Court judge, CS Karnan, was arrested today over offensive comments he allegedly made against woman judges and wives of judges, which were posted on YouTube. The ex-judge was arrested by the Chennai police. He had allegedly made defamatory and offensive comments against Supreme Court and High Court judges, the wives of judges and uploaded them online. The Madras High Court had recently come down heavily on the police for not acting in the case. In 2017, ex-Justice Karnan became the first sitting high court judge to have been sentenced to jail. He was sentenced to six months for contempt of court at a time he was a judge of the Calcutta High Court. At the time, a seven-judge bench of the Supreme Court, then headed by Chief Justice JS Khehar, had asked the West Bengal police chief to take

him into custody. He evaded arrest for weeks after being sentenced to jail until he was tracked down through his mobile phone. He was also the first sitting High Court judge to appear before the Supreme Court. He was first appointed a judge of the Madras High Court in 2009. He was transferred to the Calcutta High Court in 2016. He wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and then President Pranab Mukherjee accusing senior judges of corruption. Last year, the former judge contested the national election as a candidate of the AntiCorruption Dynamic Party (ACDP) he floated in 2018.
MUMBAI, DEC 2 (AGENCIES): China has started importing Indian rice for the first time in at least three decades due to tightening supplies and an offer from India of sharply discounted prices, Indian industry officials told Reuters. India is the world’s biggest exporter of rice and China is the biggest importer. Beijing imports around 4 million tonnes of rice annually but has avoided purchases from India, citing quality issues. The brea kthroug h comes at a time when political tensions between the two countries are high because of a border dispute in the Himalayas. “For the first time China has made rice purchases. They may increase buying next year after seeing the quality of Indian crop,” said B.V. Krishna Rao, president of the Rice Exporters Association.
Twitter flags BJP’s Amit Malviya’s tweet as ‘manipulated media’ NEW DELHI, DEC 2 (AGENCIES): A tweet by BJP’s social media chief Amit Malviya has been flagged as “manipulated media” by Twitter. Many pointed out in tweets that this is the first instance of the social media site calling out “fake news” in India. Amit Malviya had on November 28 posted a factcheck tweet on the image of an elderly farmer during a lathi-charge by policemen in Haryana during the protests that started last week. The image, posted by several Congress leaders including Rahul Gandhi, showed a cop swinging a baton at the farmer who was trying to dodge the blow. Mr Malviya, responding to Rahul Gandhi’s tweet, posted a “propaganda vs reality” tweet with a video of the same still with the caption: “Rahul Gandhi must be the most discredited opposition leader India has seen in a long long time”. The video showed the cop raising the baton but the farmer escaping the blow. But fact-check website Alt News put out a longer video of the same incident, which showed policemen raining blows on protesters. Mr Malviya was accused by critics of using a cropped video. Twitter’s “synthetic
Amit Malviya
and manipulated media policy” says: “You may not deceptively promote synthetic or manipulated media that are likely to cause harm. In addition, we may label Tweets containing synthetic and manipulated media to help people understand their authenticity and to provide additional context.” The site also said it “may label Tweets that include media (videos, audio, and images) that have been deceptively altered or fabricated”. While it said in most cases the action was restricted to labeling, media that check all three warning boxes -- are synthetic or manipulated, are shared in a deceptive manner, and are likely to cause harm - can be removed. Twitter’s move led to a flurry of reactions, with rivals Congress and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) commenting it was a first in India. Many users com-
plained that Twitter had not put up any warning on Rahul Gandhi’s tweet, yet had labelled Mr Malviya’s post as manipulated. It has been pointed out by many users that the videos don’t really make it clear whether the farmer was hit during the protest. In images instagrammed by the PTI photographer Ravi Choudhary, who took the original photo tweeted by Rahul Gandhi, the elderly man seems to be hit on the shin, though it could have been at the hands of a different cop. Ravi Choudhary was quoted by Alt News as saying: “I clicked the picture from the other side and it cannot be said with certainty whether the baton touched the farmer or not because there was a lot of commotion at the time. The police were lathi-charging at the protestors and the farmer was running in the other direction to save himself. He may have been hit by another cop earlier if not this one.” As thousands of farmers marched towards Delhi last week for their protest against the centre’s new farm laws, they faced teargassing, batons and water cannons at several points in Haryana, which used heavy force to try and block them.

During Christmas, and New Year, g reen crackers can be used from 11:55 pm to 12:30 am only at places where air quality is ‘moderate’ or below, the NGT said. It directed all District Magistrates to ensure that banned firecrackers are not sold and asked them to recover compensation from violators. Any victim of pollution, apart from other remedies, can approach District Magistrate for compensation, it added.

The Congress has been attacking the government over the use of force against
the protesting farmers, and urged the dispensation to withdraw the new farm laws and redress the grievances of the protesters. Farmer unions say the three new laws will lead to the dismantling of the minimum support price (MSP) system, leaving farmers at the mercy of corporate houses. But the government says the MSP system will continue and the new laws will give farmers more options to sell their crop. Fa r m l e a d e r s m e t Union ministers on Tuesday, but the two sides failed to break the deadlock. The next round of talks is scheduled to be held on Thursday.
PM should directly hold talks with farmers: Surjewala CHANDIGARH, DEC 2 (PTI): The Centre must suspend the three “black” farm laws without delay and Prime Minister Narendra Modi should directly hold talks with the protesting farmers, Congress leader Randeep Surjewala said on Wednesday. The talks between the Centre and agitating farmer unions a day ago had failed to end the standoff over the new farm laws, and the two sides will meet again on Thursday. The outfits rejected the government’s offer to set up a committee to look into issues raised by them. “The agriculture minister (Narendra Singh Tomar) is incompetent to even hold the conversation, so the prime minister must hold this conversation by leaving aside all prejudices and prefixed notions,” Surjewala told reporters here. According to the Congress spokesperson, around 20,000 farmers have been booked either for stubble burning or in cases re-

lated to the ‘Delhi Chalo’ march. “Modi government must, without delay, suspend these three black laws, withdraw the notification on punishing the farmer vis-a-vis burning of stubble and withdraw all the criminal cases lodged against the farmers,” he said. “And until the matter is resolved, let the laws remain suspended.” Surjewala said the agriculture minister gave a “lollipop” of constituting a special committee, asking why was it not constituted to have consultation with various farmer organisations, their representatives, stakeholders and state gov-
ernments even before the laws were framed. He sought to know why the legislations were not referred to the special parliamentary committee as demanded by the Opposition in Parliament. “Modi government is once again not only harming the interests of the farmers, but is hell-bent upon subjugating and suppressing the interests of the farmers at the alter of the

Srinivas had been discharging his duties as an interim chief after the resignation of Keshav Chand Yadav from the post, who was mired in controversy. However, in his resignation letter on July 7, 2019, Yadav said he was resign-
ing following the defeat of the party in the Lok Sabha elections. Yadav hails from Deoria in Uttar Pradesh. Sources said Srinivas has been rewarded for his hard work during the pandemic and migrant crisis. He is from Karnataka’s Shimoga, the same district as Karnataka Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa, who is the MLA from Shikaripura in Shimoga district. This is the first major appointment by Sonia Gandhi after the demise of Ahmed Patel.

listen to your own conscience without caring about the results.” He then hit out at Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh, asking “Are you under the pressure of these very same people because of which you are making these false allegations against me, abusing me, and talking on behalf of the BJP?”. “Is this your friendship with the BJP? I know that the reason may be your family is charged with cases and is receiving notices from the ED.” Referring to Singh’s recent “false allegations” against him of passing the three farmer ordinances in Delhi, Kejriwal said Punjab CM should not do “dirty politics” on farmers’ pro-
tests against three farm bills which were passed by the Centre and approved by the President. He said that the Punjab CM made false allegations against him of passing the three farmer ordinances in Delhi despite knowing the facts. “The allegations made by the Captain may be coming from his friendship with the BJP or he may be pressured to do so.” The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) national convenor also pointed out that the Punjab CM had many chances to stop the farm bills. “Why did Captain Singh not act against these bills being a member of the central government’s committee deliberating on these bills? When some people call the farmers terrorists, anti-nationals, I cannot imagine what the soldiers on the border must be going through, whose parents are being called terrorists. “We all have to decide - whether we are with the farmers, or whether we are with the people who are calling these farmers terrorists,” said CM Kejriwal.

NEW DELHI, DEC 2 (IANS): Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Wednesday accused the Central government of pressuring his government to convert nine Delhi stadiums into jail as part of its “fool-proof ’ plan to put agitating farmers there when they moved towards Delhi from Punjab and Haryana last week. The Chief Minister revealed this while addressing a digital press conference here, saying his refusal to convert the nine stadiums in Delhi into jails has “upset the Centre”. “Since the time we refused to convert the nine stadiums in Delhi into temporary jails, the Central government is very upset with me. They had a foolproof plan of putting the farmers into these jails as soon as the farmers reach Delhi,” Kejriwal said. The Chief Minister said that he was put under a lot of “pressure to convert these stadiums into jails, and received several calls from people”. “But there are some moments in life when you
NEW DELHI, DEC 2 (PTI): Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday attacked the Centre over its claim of doubling farmers’ income and alleged that their income has in fact “halved” under the “suitboot” government, while that of its crony friends has grown four times. He also demanded that the government abolishes the three “black” farm laws which are against farmers and farm labourers and asked it not to befool them with rhetoric. No immediate response was available from the government. Gandhi’s remarks come at a time when farmers from Punjab and Haryana are protesting at the Singhu, Tikri and Ghazipur borders of the national capital against the Centre’s new agriculture reform laws. “They (government) said farmers’ income will be doubled. What they did was increase the income of (their) ‘friends’ four times and halved that of farmers. This is a government of suit-boot, lies and loot,” the Congress leader said in a tweet in Hindi. Gandhi also shared a
crony-capitalist friends,” Surjewala said. He demanded that the NDA government should say which farmers organisation in the country demanded any such law. Surjewala also took a dig at the Jannayak Janta Party, the BJP’s coalition partner in Haryana, and accused it of trying to play both sides. The JJP had suggested on Tuesday that the Centre
should give a written assurance to farmers that the minimum support price system would continue. “That is the duality and doublespeak of the JJP,” Surjewala said. “Dushyant Chautala (JJP leader and Haryana deputy CM) continues to cling to power and support the antiagriculturist, anti-labour and anti-poor three black laws, and be part of the government,” he said.

Nagaland Post Vol. XXxI NO. 1 Dimapur, THURSDAY, DECEMBER 3, 2020
Nagaland Post is 30
N
agaland Post reached another momentous milestone in its journey, when it turned thirty on December 3,2020 as the first daily newspaper of the state. The journey has been enriching as the newspaper had to overcome various challenges and remained on course. The biggest challenge was lack of financial resources vital in setting up modern printing press to publish a news daily which was the norm in other states even then. However, lack of financial resources did not deter Nagaland Post from going ahead. News matter had to be hand composed and then printed with the obsolete letter press. It was a daring attempt which experts predicted that it would collapse within three or six months. Within a decade, Nagaland Post faced challenges to its survival when several newspapers were launched with computer and offset technology. In a competitive world, the one with better and latest always holds the edge. A broadsheet newspaper was launched barely two years later , using computer and offset printing machines. The newspaper’s slogan brazenly declared that money resources make a successful newspaper. A tabloid news daily with outdated and inefficient technology stood no chance. Later, another tabloid newspaper was launched with offset technology. At the launch, a VVIP proclaimed that Nagaland at last, had a real newspaper. Despite these, Nagaland Post remained focused on the road ahead. Not long enough, another newspaper with offset technology arrived. With a boast to boot, it declared that the people of Nagaland have been eagerly waiting for it. Nagaland Post eventually switched to computer and offset printing technology by 1999. Today, Nagaland Post is printed with the latest technology and offset machines with automatic folders and wrappers. Over and above these challenges, Nagaland Post by being the only newspaper in during the turbulent 90s was in the thick of an environment of killings and violence that were almost the order of the day. The major incidents reported by this newspaper were - ambush on the then speaker of the Nagaland Legislative Assembly from the site; assassination attempts on the chief minister, a minister and former minister. Nagaland Post stuck to unbiased accounts of the infamous “Black Christmas” of December 26,1994 in Mokokchung when the 16 Maratha Light Infantry went berserk after its CO was killed; the March 5,1995 incident in Kohima, when a travelling column of 16 Rashtirya Rifles fired in “panic reaction” to a tyre burst. The newspaper’s reports contradicted the wide reportages in regional and national newspapers. Being the only daily newspaper, especially during the period prior to signing of the cease fire in June 1997, Nagaland Post was sandwiched between the opposing forces. Also, actions of the state government meant to muzzle this newspaper failed mainly because Nagaland Post had never been dependent on government largesse but God’s grace. Adversity became opportunity for the newspaper. This has made it to remain as the highest circulated newspaper in the state and among the top three English news dailies of the north east as per ABC data. Nagaland Post is also the first to print in color in the state and the first of newspapers of the north east to print color in multi-pages. However, these are not as satisfying as the fact that more than 90% readers are subscribers, a testimony of the trust and value reposed by its readers. This newspaper has provided a platform for society and enlivened a generation of school and college going students since 1990, many of who are today in important positions of society. Thirty years and still the leader in the field, is owed to the trust reposed by the readers. They will remain the most valuable source of inspiration for Nagaland Post.
DailyDevotion Christian Perfection Not that I have already attained, or am already perfect… —Philippians 3:12 It is a trap to presume that God wants to make us perfect specimens of what He can do— God’s purpose is to make us one with Himself. The emphasis of holiness movements tends to be that God is producing specimens of holiness to put in His museum. If you accept this concept of personal holiness, your life’s determined purpose will not be for God, but for what you call the evidence of God in your life. How can we say, “It could never be God’s will for me to be sick”? If it was God’s will to bruise His own Son (Isaiah 53:10), why shouldn’t He bruise you? What shines forth and reveals God in your life is not your relative consistency to an idea of what a saint should be, but your genuine, living relationship with Jesus Christ, and your unrestrained devotion to Him whether you are well or sick. Christian perfection is not, and never can be, human perfection. Christian perfection is the perfection of a relationship with God that shows itself to be true even amid the seemingly unimportant aspects of human life. When you obey the call of Jesus Christ, the first thing that hits you is the pointlessness of the things you have to do. The next thought that strikes you is that other people seem to be living perfectly consistent lives. Such lives may leave you with the idea that God is unnecessary— that through your own human effort and devotion you can attain God’s standard for your life. In a fallen world this can never be done. I am called to live in such a perfect relationship with God that my life produces a yearning for God in the lives of others, not admiration for myself. Thoughts about myself hinder my usefulness to God. God’s purpose is not to perfect me to make me a trophy in His showcase; He is getting me to the place where He can use me. Let Him do what He wants.

Post-mortem
Message to fellow disabled community of Nagaland
T
o my fellow disability community: Happy world Disability Day. Today, on 3rd of December 2020, the world celebrates International Day of Persons with Disabilities under the theme “Building back better: towards an inclusive, accessible and sustainable post Covid-19 world by, for and with Persons with Disabilities”. This year’s theme emphasizes the importance and awareness of strengthening collective efforts for universal access to essential services, health, education, employment, accessible information, social protection and other socio-culture opportunities. Today is the day for us to spread awareness about our lived experiences and struggles as people’s awareness of disabilities is very limited therefore it is natural for people within society to have misconceptions about disabilities and the people who live with them. Disabilities raise a vast amount of curiosity amongst the public therefore if someone asks you a question revolving around your disability, it gives you the opportunity to educate them and to share your story by raising awareness of disability whilst doing so. Everyone might not understand but people always seem interested in discovering how you live your life and what adjustments you require. Disabilities can become a significant source of inspiration. Talking about your disability and embracing it empowers others to overcome their problems and struggles. You might not realize how embracing your own disabilities can impact on other people. Sharing your own story might give others incentive to believe in themselves and it might inspire them to embrace their own disability. I just want you all to know that you are an amazing person, whether you live with a disability or not. You shouldn’t feel insecure or ashamed of who you are because everyone is individual and everyone has their own personalities which make them special. Be happy, be yourself. If others don’t like it then let them be. Happiness is a choice. Life isn’t about pleasing everybody. If you ever feel judged or if you feel disheartened by the opinions

n between the frightening pictures and figures of Corona epidemic and the havoc created by this dreadful disease; the whole world is waiting for a vaccine to eradicate this virus. A safe and effective vaccine will be nothing short of lifesaving for the whole world. This life saving vaccine will not only become a light in the midst of the dangers hovering over human existence, but will also become a medium of life-establishment. This ‘Sanjeevani’ will bring the chaotic lifestyle back on track; it will burn new life in the collapsed economies and return the stripped smile of people. For the progress and development of this vaccine, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has travelled to Ahmedabad, Pune and Hyderabad. The whole world is in search of health and life-protection vaccine as the lives of people is frustrated by Corona. The final vaccine trials are underway worldwide. The third and final trial of the vaccine is going on in India as well. There is good and happy news on the vaccine front in India. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has taken over the vaccine front himself. He visited the Zydus Cadila in Ahmedabad, Bharat Biotech in Hyderabad and Serum Institute in Pune to review the vaccine preparations in a single day. Their aim was to gain insight into the challenges faced in immunization, preparedness and roadmap in the country. The Prime Minister’s visit has yielded many positive results. CEO of the world’s largest vaccine manufacturer
of others just remember that your happiness is your choice and you shouldn’t let others bring you down, their opinions don’t matter at all. Live your life the way you want to live it. If you live with a disability and feel like you want to embrace it then go ahead and do so, you have nothing to lose. But if you don’t want to then that is completely acceptable too. Do whatever makes you happy and content, live your life the way you desire. Lastly, empower yourself and others by realizing that your voice can make a change for generations to come. We need to become the voices that challenge. If you never raise your voice, then nothing will occur and no change will happen. Therefore, let’s join hands to raise our voice so that we can see a fully inclusive society and celebrate each other for who we truly are - talented and incredible human beings. To the society: Almost everyone will be temporarily or permanently impaired at some point in life. Disabled or ablebodied, we all have the power and responsibility to make society more inclusive for everyone. From lived experiences to listening to the disability community, there are so many ways we can continue to make our world more accepting of persons with disabilities. It is the foremost duty of the society to realize and accept persons with disabilities as humans too and include them in all spheres of life and societal activities. It’s interesting how we can see a person in one dimension and forget that he/she is a human being, intricate with multiple angles. When we see a person outside of our element, we tend to forget that he/she’s life is a culmination of different sides and not just how we see them in an isolated environment. Sometimes people can forget that a person with disability is first and foremost a human being with desires, talents, skills, heartache and loss, just like everyone else. At the basis of every person are the similarities we all share for being human and that include persons with disabilities. To the government: It is always disheartened to express that the state government has repeatedly failed to address the
issues faced by persons with disabilities in Nagaland. So far, the state government has not done any positive step to implement policies and programmes for PwDs on their well-being and standard of living. For the past 5 years, I have personally raised the issues on anomalies in job reservation and post identified suitable for PwDs in accordance with Rights to Persons with Disabilities (RPwDs) Act 2016 but the government apathetically turned a deaf ear. Though the state government tardily adopted RPwDs Act 2016 from 13th August, 2019, the reservation policy of identified posts suitable for persons with benchmark disabilities was dilatorily implemented after a lapse of one year with effect from 13th August, 2020 but the concerned departments, NPSC and NSSB are yet to comply with it for the recruitment process. Therefore, the government must immediately address this negligence by discrimination, current employment gaps and challenges for PwDs in Nagaland. Far as we know, decent work and employment are essential for the well-being and dignity of all, including persons with disabilities. Being able to work has a positive impact on social inclusion and quality of life. Quality employment is also essential for economic empowerment and thus for the independent living of persons with disabilities. Employment and decent work are the most effective means to break the vicious cycle of poverty and marginalization in which persons with disabilities may fall. The professional potential of persons with disabilities often remains untapped due to misconceptions about their working capacity, negative societal attitudes and non-accessible workplaces, vocational skills centres and job services. Gaps remain in the employment of persons with disabilities in the public services, government offices, private sectors and mainstream labour market. The state government must take initiatives to address these issues, through anti-discrimination legislation, full participation and equal opportunity systems, as well as by
developing disability-inclusive state employment policies, technical vocational education and training, public employment services and programmes, public procurement, entrepreneurship support services, and social protection schemes for persons with disabilities, which are compatible with work. There are several challenges for PwDs in Nagaland to access the job market in Nagaland. Some of the important factors which hinder them to access employment in Nagaland include lack of education and training, lack of financial resources, inaccessible workplace, attitudes of employers and non-compliance of policy frameworks. However, the primary determinant of employment is non-compliance of the policy frameworks and provisions of the PwDs Act 1995 & RPwDs Act 2016. Critical analysis of all the guidelines measures laid down by the various policies in the aforementioned Acts reveal that although emphasis has been laid in legislative framework for promoting employment of persons with disabilities, the state government has excruciatingly failed to produce a significant impact. This signifies that all the piecemeal efforts need to be replaced by more well planned and coordinated measures. The government has a significant role to implement policy frameworks, acts and laws to dismantle the barriers to employment and to invest sufficient funding and expertise to unlock the vast potential of persons with disabilities. The government should no longer overlook the thousands of PwDs in Nagaland, who are denied access to employment and never get the chance to shine. There is still a huge gap to be covered in the implementation of the existing disability laws in the Nagaland state, especially in relation to reservations of jobs for PwDs and awareness of the provisions of the RPwDs Act 2016. Affirming the current assumption, Persons with disabilities, particularly those with severe disabilities that require a higher level of care and support, are more likely to be economically vulnerable. Social protection programmes could help
The dark tunnels of the Corona
Pune-based Serum Institute of India, Adar Poonawala, says there is no possibility of delay in the corona vaccine. In the period of increasing infection of the corona epidemic, the early arrival of the vaccine, its effectiveness, its reach to the people and the pace of life-saving has become more important. Because Corona has snatched many loved ones from us. The third wave of Corona has wreaked havoc. British Prime Minister Boris Johnson had said long ago that this is an epidemic that can take away all our loved ones from us, but such warnings do not fully effect until we personally face this life threatening situation. Today, there is no family in the country whose members have not fallen prey to it. So far, over 1.4 million people have fallen prey to it all over the world and around six crore have been found infected. In our own country, the figure of people infected with corona is going to cross the horrific count of 10 million. As the winter deepens, the firepower of the third wave of Corona is showing increasing and frightening scenes. Ironically, as this epidemic has become dangerous and life-threatening, we and our governments have become more careless, indifferent and insensitive. The beds of hospitals are getting filled up and the medical crisis is getting worse once again. The problem is not with Corona alone. Corona has also played havoc for people already suffering from other diseases. Necessary surgeries have been
halted, people are shying away from seeing doctors at the outdoor and diseases like diabetes or blood pressure are proving fatal. The records of the corona victims are still saved, but there is no record of those who died of these diseases. The truth is that more people were taken to other diseases than those who died due to disaster in these days. In these complex and desperate environments, cursing the governments will not work; there is no magic lamp in the hands of the governments either. Whether it is the central government or the state governments, everyone did well, whatever they could. Even though some governments have tried to do politics and seek political benefits in this epidemic and in the issue of survival of innumerable people. While some governments set an example of humanitarianism above political advantage. Planned all his power in the undertakings of saving people from this epidemic and their treatment. The example of Uttar Pradesh is in front. In March 2020, there was only one laboratory in the entire state to investigate Corona. In those days the hospital was not available for treatment of this disease. In a hurry, ventilators, bedding and related medicines were supplied. Para-medical staff along with doctors was trained. This is the reason why even the World Health Organization has praised the Government of Uttar Pradesh. Other territorial governments have tried to do the same, yet it is not easy
to deal with the epidemic of day and night in such a large population. There has also been a revenue challenge before governments, so that people can be fed. Elements of the epidemic that make life toxic and taken in dark tunnels are still sitting in our lives. Trying to get rid of them can only fight against Corona and start a new life. For which hopes are tied in India, the light of vaccine is visible. There is a reassurance of vaccine coming into the environment and it is expected that by the beginning of next year it will start reaching people, but everything will improve with vaccines, no one can guarantee it. Corona is going to have a long-term impact on humans’ lifestyles. Therefore, for a long time, common people have to be careful and alert, following the use of masks and following the social distance, they will have to live on the basis of the lifestyle developed by the corona lockdown. To fight this epidemic, we have to change ourselves, but is it happening? In festivals, marriage, entertainment functions, religious events andin social ceremonies, we are ignoring the safety measures and government instructions, which prove dangerous not only for ourselves but others also. The Prime Minister is thinking of liberating not only the people of India but also the world from the corona epidemic. India is close to making a vaccine. Hence, the market for discussions on its distribution and use is a hot topic in these days. The vaccine will be distrib-
overcome these situations, but the coverage of persons with disabilities is limited due to the lack of awareness about social protection, and lack of accessibility to and discrimination by grant offices, among others. For instance, on poverty alleviation and social assistance schemes, the level of coverage appeared trifling and the genuine PwDs beneficiaries were neglected as detected by the Audit department. Moreover, in nearly all the cases, the combined social protection that the various poverty alleviation and social welfare programmes offer to PwDs appeared to be rather insignificant. This is a product of low awareness among PwDs of programmes and schemes, weak channels for increasing demand in several cases, and in most cases an apparent lack of focus on the whole area of social protection for PwDs. In contrast, the system of reservations under general poverty alleviation schemes has clearly failed to achieve the desired outcomes and consideration needs to be given to alternative approaches to livelihood promotion and other forms of social protection for PwDs. Lastly, there remains limited reference to the role of persons with disabilities themselves in policy development, implementation, monitoring and evaluation. Disabled People Organization (Nagaland State Disability Forum) is not participating as a decision making body in implementing the policy frameworks nor PwDs themselves. Rather, they remain agents who interact with the public policy and delivery systems either through public agencies or at best NGOs. While the PwDs Act 1995 and RPwDs Act 2016 note that “Persons with disabilities are an important resource for the country, and seeks to create an environment that provides them with equal opportunities, protection of their rights and full participation in society”, this critical insight is not reflected in Nagaland State and therefore, the state government must address these issues in the larger interest of PwDs community. uted first in India and supply to other countries will be considered later. Indigenous vaccines of Bharat Biotech International covaccine and Zydus Biotech are under development, which have shown encouraging results in Phase III trials. Other companies are also working on the vaccine on a war footing. All companies are following global norms. Although the US, Russia have claimed 90 percent of their vaccine success, the final conclusions are yet to be drawn. The process of making any vaccine is complex. These companies have found successby struggling with these complexities, they are praiseworthy. It is a matter of pride for us to be counted as one of the largest manufacturers of generic medicines and vaccines in the world. Indian vaccine companies are far ahead of others. The Serum Institute alone can produce 40 to 500 million
doses. Rays of light are now visible in the darkness of the virus and people hope that India will create a safe and effective vaccine. Russia has also contracted to build Sputnik-V in India. There are many challenges before India, but overcoming these challenges, India will be in a position to give vaccine to 300 million people by August-September. The NITI Aayog has prepared a complete plan to deliver the vaccine at every village and panchayat level. If India’s vaccine is safe and effective, then India will give life to the whole world. India has given yoga, ayurveda, spirituality and non-violence to the world, moving forward in this direction, India is ready to give vaccine form Sanjeevani. Certainly, in the case of vaccine too, India will become self-sufficient and it will be presented as an emergence of new life for the whole world. Lalit Garg, Delhi

Not easy to shift Film City from Mumbai: Sena on UP CM’s visit
Nagaland Post, Dimapur THURSDAY, DECEMBER 3, 2020
China caught unawares on India’s readiness
NEW DELHI, DEC 2 (IANS): China is making last minute efforts to make emergency procurements of high-altitude gear and clothing for its troops as they were caught unaware of India’s readiness for the harsh winter atop the Eastern Ladkah heights -- that has been the bone of contention between the two Asian majors. India has occupied critical mountain heights on the southern bank of the Pangong Lake including Rechin La, Rezang
La, Mukpari that were unmanned till now. This along with some other peaks allows India to dominate Spangur Gap under Chinese control and also the Moldo garrison on the Chinese side. This has irked the PLA which has made multiple attempts to dislodge Indian troops leading to instances of warning gunshots being fired. Now, witnessing that India continues to occupy heights even as dark winter months approach just as temperatures have started
PM Modi invites Boris Johnson as R-Day chief guest

New Delhi, Dec 2 (IANS): Prime Minister Narendra Modi has formally invited UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson to be the chief guest for the Republic Day celebrations on January 26, 2021. The invitation was extended by Modi to Johnson during their phone conversation on November 27, sources said. It is after a gap of 27 years that a UK Prime Minister will be the chief guest at India’s 70th Republic Day next month. John Major was the last British Prime Minister to attend the Republic Day parade in New Delhi in 1993. The government is yet to confirm Johnson’s visit. However, Prime Minister Modi hinted in a tweet on November 27 that IndiaUK are embarking on an ambitious partnership. “We agreed to work towards a quantum leap in our cooperation in all areas - trade and investments, defence and security, climate change and fighting Covid-19,” Modi had tweeted.

Sources said that PLA Joint Logistics Support Force (JLSF) has constituted a Quality Supervision Team for emergency procurement of Extreme Cold Climate clothing. This team has now been tasked to ensure good quality clothing and fast delivery to forward area troops. Whereas Indian Army -- having an edge of experience of troop deployment at Siachen heights -- in October made procurement of additional high altitude winter clothing from US keeping in mind the needs of the enhanced troop deployment in Ladakh in peak winter amid the military tussle with China. It was purchased under the Logistics Exchange Memorandum Agreement (LEMOA) between India and US that facilitates logistical support, supplies and services between the armed forces of the two countries. These include clothing, food, lubricants, spare parts, medical services among other essentials.
UP govt’s Mission Shakti has failed: Priyanka Gandhi
NEW DELHI, DEC 2 (PTI): Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Wednesday alleged that the Yogi Adityanath government’s ‘Mission Shakti’ has “failed” as crimes against women are rising in Uttar Pradesh. Chief Minister Adityanath had launched the ‘Mission Shakti’ campaign in October focussing on ensuring the safety and dignity of women and girls, with a stern warning that perpetrators of crimes against women will be dealt with an iron hand. Attacking the BJP government, Gandhi said in a tweet in Hindi, “When the government’s aim is hypocrisy and false propaganda, then missions are bound to fail.” “Mission Shakti launched by the BJP government to cover up the rising crimes against women in UP has failed. Case is being registered against those responsible for burning a woman after one month. Crimes are rising,” the Congress general secretary in-charge of UP alleged.
Apart from that the Indian Army has also completed establishment of habitat facilities for all troops deployed in the sector, sources said. The living accommodation that will protect the troops from the severe cold and wind chill factor includes fast erectable modular shelters. The force has also made state of the art habitat with integrated arrangements for electricity, water, heating facilities, health and hygiene have been recently created to accommodate the troops. These shelters can withstand temperatures dipping to minus 50 degrees Celsius. India and China are engaged in an eight-monthlong standoff at the Line of Actual Control in Eastern Ladakh. Despite several levels of dialogue, there has not been any breakthrough and the deadlock continues. On June 15, at least 20 Indian soldiers and an unknown number of Chinese troops were killed in a violent clash in the Galwan Valley.

Kerala scribe case: Sibal cites Arnab relief
NEW DELHI, DEC 2 (IANS): Chief Justice of India S.A. Bobde on Wednesday told senior advocate Kapil Sibal that every case is different, as he cited quick relief to Republic TV editor Arnab Goswami while seeking relief for Kerala journalist Siddique Kappan, who was arrested by Uttar Pradesh Police on October 5 while he was on way to Hathras. Sibal, representing the Kerala Union of Working Journalists (KUWJ), submitted before a bench headed by the Chief Justice that Goswami’s plea was decided by the Supreme Court though his bail petition was pending before the lower court. The Chief Justice then asked Sibal if he had moved the Allahabad High Court seeking relief in the matter, and Sibal replied: “In Arnab Goswami’s case, bail was pending before lower court and still this court entertained it.” Chief Justice Bobde responded, “every case is different”, and reiterated, “are you willing to go to the court below?” Sibal said no, saying that the case involves grave violations and insisted on

Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, representing the Uttar Pradesh government, sought an adjournment for filing a rejoinder affidavit. He submitted that the investigation into the matter has revealed some “shocking” details and added that Kappan claimed that he is working as a journalist in a Kerala-based daily but that newspaper was closed two years. Sibal opposed the prayer for adjournment saying the case involves question of liberty.
SC directs Centre to install ‘Make those not wearing masks serve at Covid centres’ CCTV in offices of CBI, ED & NIA
GANDHINAGAR, DEC 2 (IANS): Expressing concern and dissatisfaction over the violating the Covid-19 guidelines in Gujarat, the High Court on Wednesday ordered the state government to issue a notification to make those not wearing face masks to perform community services at Covid care centres for five to 15 days. The High Court also expressed “shock” over the way BJP legislator Kanti Gamit allegedly flouted all Covid-19 protocols and guidelines at a family function. The court also asked what the state government was doing about the issue. A video clip had gone viral on the social media, wherein over 6,000 persons had gathered at his grandson’s engagement ceremony, most of them without masks and violating all Covid-19
guidelines. “This is shocking and unfortunate. What was the police doing when such a large gathering occurred? We are not at all satisfied with the way the government has handled the situation. Incidents like this make all your efforts till now meaningless.” A bench of Chief Justice Vikramnath and Justice JB Pardiwala, during a suo motu hearing on coronavirus and lockdown situation, on which over 50 PILs have been filed, ordered the Gujarat government to issue the notification to ensure social service by face mask norm violators at Covid care centres apart from fine of Rs 1,000. The HC had last week suggested to the government that as the people were not heeding to the warning of fines, there was need to make them serve at Covid care centres for

NEW DELHI, DEC 2 (PTI): The Supreme Court directed the Centre on Wednesday to install CCTV cameras and recording equipment at the offices of investigating agencies, including the CBI, the ED and National Investigation Agency (NIA), which conduct interrogations and have the power of arrest. A bench headed by Justice R F Nariman said that states and Union Territories (UTs) should ensure that CCTV cameras are installed at each and every police station, making them imperative at all entry and exit points, main gate, all lockups, all corridors, lobby and reception area as also areas outside the lock-up room. The apex court, which had earlier ordered installation of CCTV cameras in police stations to check human rights abuses, said that as most of the probe agencies including Narcotics Control Bureau, Department of Revenue Intelligence and Serious Fraud Investigation Office carry out interrogation in their offices, CCTVs be “compulsorily installed” in all offices where such questioning takes place and accused are kept.

Indian economy to see positive growth in Q4
New Delhi, Dec 2 (PTI): The Indian economy is coming out of the pandemic-induced degrowth and GDP growth will enter the positive territory in the fourth quarter of this fiscal, Niti Aayog Vice Chairman Rajiv Kumar said on Wednesday. In an interview to PTI, Kumar also said the Centre’s new agriculture reform laws are aimed at increasing the income of farmers and the present agitation was a result of misunderstanding and miscommunication which need to be removed. “The second quarter GDP figure (contraction of 7.5 per cent) reflects that the economy is coming out of this pandemic-induced degrowth phase and my ex-
pectation is that in the third quarter, we will achieve the same level of economic activity as the year-ago period. “And the fourth quarter will show a small but positive growth over the previous year because the government has... ushered in many structural reforms and some more are in the pipeline,” he said. Stating that all those reforms will provide a very strong foundation for accelerating the economic growth in the fiscal year 2021-22 and beyond, Kumar said,”we have now shrugged off the negative impact of the pandemic and are moving towards a sustained high growth trajectory in the coming years”. About India’s growth figure in the current fiscal year, he said it
will be better than negative 9 or 10 per cent, as has been forecast by many, including the RBI. Kumar noted that the COVID-19 pandemic had an unprecedented negative impact on economic activities but this was completely in the nature of a natural disaster and not related to the regular economic cycle. “Therefore, it is quite irrelevant to talk about the economy being in a technical recession,” he emphasised. On better than expected manufacturing growth of 0.6 per cent in the second quarter of 2020-21, Kumar said this has come as a pleasant surprise. “But there is a base effect but nonetheless, it is also endorsed by the higher collection of GST in the last three months,” he said, adding that the manufacturing sector will continue to do well in the third quarter because of the festival demand and the pent-up demand. India’s economy recovered faster than expected in the September quarter as a pick-up in manufacturing helped GDP clock a lower contraction of 7.5 per cent and held out hopes for further improvement on better consumer demand.

Mumbai, Dec 2 (PTI): The rupee pared its initial gains to close 13 paise lower at 73.81 against the US dollar on Wednesday, tracking recovery in dollar index and emergence of selling in domestic equities. At the interbank forex market, the domestic unit witnessed a highly volatile trading session. It opened at 73.45, pared the gains and finally closed at 73.81 against the greenback, registering a decline of 13 paise over its previous close of 73.68. During the session, the local unit saw an intra-day high of 73.42 and a low of 73.82 against the American currency. “RBI seems to have intervened aggressively in the forex market through futures. The recovery in the dollar index and profit booking in domestic equities also weighed on the rupee,” Devarsh Vakil, Deputy Head of Retail Research, HDFC Securities, said. T h e d o l l a r i n d ex , which gauges the greenback’s strength against a basket of six currencies, was up 0.07 per cent at 91.37. Analysts, meanwhile, said that investor focus will be on the Monetary Policy Committee’s three-day interest rate-setting meeting that started Wednesday, with the decision due on Friday.
Seoul, Dec 2 (IANS): Samsung Electronics was the top global smartphone manufacturer in the third quarter of the year, a report said on Wednesday, as demand for its mobile devices increased in advanced markets amid the pandemic. Samsung led the industry in terms of smartphone production with 78 million units in the July-September period, up 42 percent from a quarter earlier, and accounted for 23.2 percent of the total share, according to market researcher TrendForce. “This result reflects Samsung’s continuing focus on specific regional markets such as North America and Europe,” TrendForce said. “Owing to economic stimulus policies and subsidies, smartphone sales in the target markets have recovered somewhat”. Samsung was followed by Chinese players Oppo and Xiaomi, which had market

Questioning whether the founding fathers of Nagaland spent a single night in the jungle fighting for freedom and what they
were doing when the 16point charter of demand was submitted to GoI, NH asked Ravi whether he thought Naga problem was related to armed insurgencies. It asked him why GoI signed ceasefire agreements in 1964 and 1997, if the 16-point resolution was final. “Who are the guns of people from outside the State of Nagaland inspired by Maoist ideology and tactics? Who raped our mothers and sisters and destroyed and burnt down scores of our churches? Is it not the occupational

The hoho further questioned whether he was not the one who misinterpreted Framework Agreement. includes a lander, ascender, orbiter, and return vehicle. The sealed packages will be stored in the ascender, which will lift off from the Moon’s surface to transfer the samples to the returner and orbiter waiting in lunar orbit. At the proper time, the returner will then separate from the orbiter and carry the samples back to Earth, finally landing in north China’s Inner Mongolia. A no stranger to the moon, China launched its first lunar probe, Chang’e-1 in 2007 which orbited 200 km above the moon and mapped 3D images of the lunar surface followed by Chang’e-2 in 2010 which had sent high-resolution photos of the moon’s surface. Chang’e-3 was launched in 2013 which softly touched down on the Sinus Iridum 12 days later. The Chang’e-4 probe was launched in 2018. It made the first-ever soft landing on the Von Karman Crater in the South Pole-Aitken Basin on the far side of the moon. A major space power, China launched its first Mars mission ‘Tianwen-1’ on July 23 this year. The Mars spacecraft which included an orbiter, lander and rover is on its way to the red planet.

One is to sample the lunar surface, and the other is to drill underground. The two methods could increase the chance of getting more diverse samples,” Peng Jing, deputy chief designer of the Chang’e-5 probe said. It is China’s maiden attempt to retrieve materials from an extra-terrestrial body. The United States sent astronauts to the moon to collect samples. In the Soviet Union’s unmanned lunar sampling missions, the
spacecraft took off from the moon and returned to Earth directly. The US space agency on Wednesday congratulated China for the Chang’e-5 mission. Nasa’s top science official, Dr Thomas Zurbuchen, said he hoped the international research community would eventually get the chance to analyse any samples sent home. “When the samples collected on the Moon are returned to Earth, we hope everyone will benefit from being able to study this precious cargo that could advance the international science community,” he tweeted.
had previously been jailed over charges related to their activism. Their jailing comes as Beijing tightens control over the semi-autonomous city following months of anti-government protests last year, which occasionally saw violent clashes between protesters and police. Between June 2019 and October this year, over 10,000 people have been arrested on protest-related charges. In June, Beijing imposed a sweeping national security law on Hong Kong to crack down on dissent, and outspoken prodemocracy advocates such as media tycoon Jimmy Lai and Chow have been arrested under the law. The jailing of Wong, Chow and Lam drew rebuke from Amnesty International, which said they “must be released immediately and unconditionally.” “Once again, the government has used the politically motivated charge of ‘inciting others to protest’ to prosecute people who have merely spoken out and protested peacefully,” said the group’s Asia-Pacific regional director, Yamini Mishra.

Tokyo, DEC 2 (AFP): Japan will give free coronavirus vaccines to all of its residents under a bill passed Wednesday, as the nation battles record numbers of daily cases. The bill, which says the government will cover all vaccine costs for Japan’s 126 million residents, was approved by the upper house of parliament, having cleared the powerful lower house. The country has secured Covid-19 vaccines for 60 million people from pharmaceutical giant Pfizer, and for a further 25 million people from biotech firm Moderna. It has also confirmed it will receive 120 mil-
Iran’s president rejects bill that would boost enrichment
Accra, Dec 2 (IANS): Ghana has opened a special voting on to enable personnel who would not be able to cast their ballots on the election day, slated on December 7, to vote beforehand. The Electoral Commission (EC) on Tuesday said more than 100,000 registered voters including election officials, security personnel, scribes, and all other persons discharging election duties on December 7, would participate in the special voting, Xinhua reported. At the Trade Fair site special voting centre in the capital, there were personnel of Ghana military, police, immigration service, fire service, and the prisons service in the queues waiting to cast their ballots. James Oppong Boanuh, the Ghana Police Inspector General (IGP), who also cast his ballot at the center, commended the EC for the “smooth process.” “The electoral officers are doing their work well, and I went through the system and it was so smooth. I urge everybody to come and cast their votes,” said the IGP.
Tehran, Dec 2 (AP): Iran’s President Hassan Rouhani on Wednesday rejected a bill approved by parliament that would have suspended UN inspections and boosted uranium enrichment, saying it was “harmful” to diplomatic efforts aimed at restoring the 2015 nuclear deal and easing US sanctions. The tug-of-war over the bill, which gained momentum after the killing of a prominent Iranian nuclear scientist last month, reflects the rivalry between Rouhani, a relative moderate, and hard-line lawmakers who dominate parliament and favour a more confrontational approach to the West. The bill would have suspended UN inspections and required the government to resume enriching uranium to 20 per cent if European nations fail to provide relief from crippling U.S. sanctions on the country’s oil and banking sectors. That level falls short of the threshold needed for nuclear weapons but is higher than that required for civilian purposes.

Hogn Kong, Dec 2 (AP): Hong Kong pro-democracy activists Joshua Wong, Agnes Chow and Ivan Lam were sentenced to jail on Wednesday on charges related to an unauthorised anti-government protest last year at the city’s police headquarters. Wong, who pleaded guilty to organizing and participating in the protest,
received 13 1/2 months behind bars. Chow, who also pleaded guilty to participating in the protest and inciting others to take part, received 10 months, while Lam received 7 months after pleading guilty to incitement. The protest took place on June 21 last year, and saw thousands surround the police headquarters as they
demonstrated against excessive force by police against protesters, as well as a nowwithdrawn extradition bill that would have allowed suspects to be extradited to mainland China. The trio were members of the now-defunct political group Demosisto. It is the first time that Chow, 23, has been given a jail sentence. Wong, 24, and Lam, 26,
First shots roll out next week London, Dec 2 (PTI): The UK on Wednesday became the first country to approve the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine against COVID-19 after “rigorous” analysis by its independent regulator, paving the way for mass vaccinations from as early as next week among people at the highest risk of death from the deadly virus. The British regulator, the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA), says the jab, which claims to offer up to 95 per cent protection against Covid-19 illness, is safe for roll out. The UK government said the approval follows a “rigorous” analysis of the data, conducted at a faster pace but without any compromise on standards. Prime Minister Boris Johnson welcomed the “fantastic” news and confirmed that the vaccine will begin to be made available from next

week. “It’s the protection of vaccines that will ultimately allow us to reclaim our lives and get the economy moving again,” Johnson, a COVID-19 survivor, said. The vaccines require two doses 21 days apart, with strong immunity response kicking in after seven days of the second dose. The MHRA said it will continue to monitor the data on a rolling basis once the vaccines are deployed among the British public. “I am thrilled. Help is on its way… we can see the dawn. Let’s redouble our efforts to follow the lockdown
rules,” said UK Health Secretary Matt Hancock. “It’s been a very tough 2020 but 2021 will be brighter,” he said. The UK government has formally accepted the recommendation from the MHRA, which means the two-dose vaccine can be injected into arms of highrisk categories within days. Around 10 million doses should be available soon, with the first 800,000 arriving in the UK in the coming days. “The vaccine will be made available across the UK from next week. The NHS [National Health
Service] has decades of experience in delivering large scale vaccination programmes and will begin putting their extensive preparations into action to provide care and support to all those eligible for vaccination,” said a spokesperson for the Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC). “This follows months of rigorous clinical trials and a thorough analysis of the data by experts at the MHRA who have concluded that the vaccine has met its strict standards of safety, quality and effectiveness,” the spokesperson said. The UK’s Joint Committee on Vaccinations and Immunisations (JCVI) has published its advice for the priority groups to receive the vaccine, including care home residents, health and care staff, the elderly and the clinically extremely vulnerable. Elderly people in care homes and care home staff are top of the priority list, followed by over-80s and health and care staff. Professor Wei Shen Lim of the JCVI told reporters at a Downing Street
briefing that vaccine prioritisation has been based on the risk of death from Covid-19 and the hope is that “in phase one of the vaccination programme, 90 to 99 per cent of those who are most at risk of dying from Covid19 will be covered”. NHS Chief Executive, Simon Stevens, said the health service was preparing for “the largest-scale vaccination campaign in our country’s history”. Around 50 hospitals are on standby and vaccination centres in venues such as conference centres are being set up now, with military personnel being deployed to assist with the logistics. The joint vaccine, produced by American pharmaceutical giant Pfizer and German biotech firm BioNTech, had recently claimed trials suggested it works well in people of all ages, races and ethnicities. The UK is expected to receive a total of 40 million doses by the end of 2021, enough to vaccinate up to a third of the population, with the majority of doses anticipated in the first half of next year.
lion doses of AstraZeneca’s vaccine. Pfizer and Moderna are already seeking emergency-use approval in the United States and Europe, after clinical tests showed their jabs were effective. The bill’s passage comes two weeks after Japan’s prime minister said the country was on “maximum alert” over the virus, and as medics warn hospitals are on the brink of collapse. Japan has seen a comparatively small Covid-19 outbreak overall, with around 2,100 deaths and 150,000 cases, and has not imposed the strict lockdowns seen elsewhere.
Washington, Dec 2 (AP): Ron Klain has checked all the boxes of a classic Washington striver: Georgetown, Harvard Law, Supreme Court clerk and Capitol Hill staffer, White House adviser and, along the way, of course, lobbyist and lawyer. Now he is preparing to serve as President-elect Joe Biden’s chief of staff, a job often referred to as the nation’s chief operating officer. His gilded resume, deep knowledge of the gears and levers of power in the capital and decadeslong association with Biden have also done something unusual in today’s Washington: drawn praise from both sides of the ideological divide. The 59-year-old father of three has a reputation among Democrats and, strikingly, even some Republicans for competence - a notable attribute after an administration that rewarded and dismissed people based on their loyalty to President Donald Trump.
Speaking at a Cabinet meeting, Rouhani said his administration, “does not agree with that and considers it harmful for the trend of diplomatic activities.” He implied the lawmakers were positioning themselves ahead of elections planned for June. He added that “today, we are more powerful in the nuclear field than at any other time.” The bill is expected to have little if any impact, as Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has the final say on all major policies, including those related to the nuclear program. Rather, it appeared to be a show of defiance after Mohsen
Fakhrizadeh, a key figure in Iran’s nuclear program, was killed in an attack Iranian officials have blamed on Israel. Fakhrizadeh headed a program that Israel and the West have alleged was a military operation looking at the feasibility of building a nuclear weapon. The International Atomic Energy Agency says that “structured program” ended in 2003. The US government has concurred with those findings, while Israel says Iran is still aiming to develop nuclear weapons, pointing to its work on ballistic missiles and other technologies. Iran insists its nuclear program is entirely peaceful.

Explaining why China chose to do what has been accomplished by the US and Soviet Union much earlier, Pei Zhaoyu, deputy director of the Lunar Exploration and Space Program Centre of the CNSA said that China chose a complicated technological approach including unmanned rendezvous and docking in lunar orbit, and could bring back more samples and lay a technological foundation for manned lunar missions. The samples collected on Wednesday, will be sealed in what scientists have described as a long “sausage-like package”. “Samples have to be sealed up in case any contamination occurs during the course back to earth,” Luan Enjie, the chief commander of China’s first lunar mission told the China Central Television (CCTV). “The Moon environment is very different from the Earth, so samples need to be stored in a very clean container,” he added. These soils obtained from the Moon are expected to provide information about its geological evolution and offer insights into solar activities in the universe, according to the mission team. China’s Chang’e-5 probe lands on moon BEIJING, DEC 2 (PTI): On the most complex mission to the moon, China’s Chang’e-5 probe drilled the lunar surface, collected samples on Wednesday in the first such effort in over 40 years and began preparations to bring the precious soil to earth, the country’s space authority said. The Chang’e-5 probe has collected moon samples after landing on Tuesday, the China National Space Administration (CNSA) announced on Wednesday. The unmanned probe landed in the area called Oceanus Procellarum, also known as the Ocean of Storms, on the near side of the moon and started rolling out its solar panel wings and unlocking some of the payloads on-board to prepare for sample collection. The lander first drilled a 2-meter-deep hole, digging out soil, and sealed it up at 4:53 a.m. on Wednesday. Next, it will use its robotic arms to scoop up more samples from the lunar surface for backup, state-run media reported. About two kgs of samples are expected to be collected and sealed in a container, CNSA officials said. State-run media has

Radhika plays British spy Noor Inayat-Khan, or Nora Baker, who served in the Special Operations Executive during World War II. “I couldn’t be happier to be an integral part of this film, working alongside such an incredible cast from around the globe and I am extremely excited about the movie’s release,” said Radhika. “Since the movie has already premiered globally, I have been waiting for
the moment where Indian audiences get the chance to watch this thrilling spy drama. I am hoping that they too will shower the same love and appreciation that we received from other parts of the world,” she added. The spy drama is

role of Noor Inayat Khan, and audiences will find Radhika’s portrayal of Noor nuanced, complex, and heartbreaking,” said Sarah Megan Thomas. Following the film’s critical success in the US and the UK, it will release in India on Amazon Prime Video on December 11. “ ‘A Call to Spy’ is a fascinating story of female war-time agents, something which audiences are yet to explore/witness in prominence. Kelly Clarkson says divorce is ‘horrible’
K
elly Clarkson is opening up about her divorce. During a recent interview on the singer’s daytime talk show, Clarkson, 38, spoke with Alicia Keys and author Glennon Doyle about her divorce. During the chat, the “American Idol” brought up her divorce from Brandon Blackstock, her husband of seven years, calling the process “horrible.” “There are so many hard parts,” she explained. “The hardest for me is the kids, that’s the hardest for me. I think, as women especially, we’re trained ... to take it all on and you can deal with it and you’re fine, but it’s your babies that you worry about.” Clarkson filed for divorce from Blackstock in June, citing “irreconcilable differences” after roughly seven years of marriage. They share daughter River, 6, and son Remington Alexander, 4. Clarkson praised Doyle’s book, “Untamed” and said it made her take stock of her own marriage. She recalled feeling that her marriage “isn’t happiness for both of us,” and that both she and Blackstock “deserve better.” The singer was re-
cently awarded primary physical custody of her children amid the split. According to People, the singer and talk show host has been given primary custody over the kids in an effort to provide stability in the children’s lives. Blackstock, a talent manager, plans to live in Montana while Clarkson continues to work and live in Los Angeles. In court
documents obtained by the outlet, the court ruled that “the level of conflict between the parents has increased. The parties have a difficult time co-parenting due to issues of trust between them.” As a result, Blackstock will be allowed to visit the children in Los Angeles as well as video chat with them every day at a previously agreed upon time. In addition, the kids will spend their Thanksgiving break with their father and Dec. 19 through Christmas at 2 p.m. as well. Meanwhile, Clarkson get them that afternoon through the end of the New Year’s holiday. People notes that they will share joint physical and legal custody, but she will remain the primary physical custody holder in Los Angeles. (FoxNews)

here’s a new musical power couple in town, according to a new report. Per People magazine, citing a source, singer Rihanna and rapper A$AP Rocky are dating. The “Love on the Brain” songstress, 32, split from her boyfriend of three years earlier this year, and rumors of a romance between herself and Rocky -- born Rakim Athelaston Mayers -- have swirled since. Over the weekend, the two were spotted together for a night out with friends in New York, Page Six reported. Over the summer, the artist was also featured in Rihanna’s Fenty Skin campaign, for which, the Fenty Beauty founder shared a snap of the two of them seemingly getting cozy by the water. The pair also did a handful of interviews together to promote the skincare line. During an interview for GQ, Rocky sweetly said that the hardest part of working with Rihanna is “not goofing off and laughing the whole time.” “This s--t is comedy,” he stressed. “That’s the hardest part ... we [are] so cool, it’s just hard not to laugh, that’s all. But it was fun. The hardest
part is not having too much fun, you just forget that it’s still work.” In a similar interview for Vogue, Rihanna said that the hardest part of working with A$AP was “getting [his] approval” for images. “Your skin is pretty regardless, that’s why we
hired you, you know what I’m saying?” she said. “... It’s not hard working with you.” Rihanna has previously been romantically linked with Chris Brown, Drake and businessman Hassan Jameel, whom she split from in January. (FoxNews)

Schumacher’s son Mick to race F1 for Haas in 2021 New Delhi, Dec 2 (IANS): The Schumacher name will make a racing return to Formula One next year as Mick Schumacher -- son of seven-time world champion Michael Schumacher -- has signed a multiyear deal with Haas. Schumacher (21), a member of the Ferrari Driver Academy, leads the Formula 2 title race heading into the final round of the season at Bahrain International Circuit (R12 December 4-6). He holds a 14-point advantage at the top of the points table -- his sophomore season with Prema Racing netting 10 podium finishes to-date, including a pair of stand-out Feature Race victories at Monza and Sochi. “The prospect of being on the Formula 1 grid next year makes me incredibly happy and I’m simply speechless,” said Schumacher in a statement. “I would like to thank Haas F1 Team, Scuderia Ferrari and the Ferrari Driver Academy for placing their trust in me. Real in ‘total crisis’
Real Madrid’s shock Champions League defeat by Shakhtar Donetsk has plunged them into ‘total crisis’, according to the
Spanish press, as manager Zinedine Zidane insisted he won’t quit. The 13-times European champions went behind in the 57th minute when Shakhtar substitute Dentinho capitalised on a lapse in concentration by Raphael Varane to score in an empty Olympic Stadium, where Madrid won their last Champions League in 2018. Israeli forward Manor Solomon then wrapped up the home side’s shock win over the Spaniards in the 82nd with a solo run on the
counter and finish into the bottom corner. Real dropped to third in Group B and must now must beat Borussia Monchengladbach next week to make absolutely sure of progress to the last-16. Shakhtar, who moved above Real into second in the group, have now beaten Zidane’s side home and away. And the verdict in Wednesday’s newspapers was brutal, with Sport describing the defeat as ‘disastrous’ and the situation as
a ‘total crisis’. They added that ‘Zidane’s project is showing symptoms of agony’ and the hierarchy at the Bernabeu are considering dismissing him despite the French manager’s insistence he won’t go. ‘From bad to worse’ was the headline on the front of Mundo Deportivo, who featured a picture of a floored Luka Modric during the defeat. AS showed Zidane, wearing a thick coat and woolly hat in the chill of Kiev, and the headline ‘borderline situation’ to reflect Real’s chances going down to the wire next week. The front of Marca featured a sea of dejected Real players and the Spanish idiom ‘Quien te ha visto y quien te ve…’ which translates into English as ‘wow, how you’ve changed, you look totally different.’ There is certainly a marked contrast this season to the Real team that won La Liga back in July. Zidane won three consecutive European Cups during his first spell at the club but they now face the humiliating prospect of playing Europa League football after Christmas unless they win against Gladbach next week. Madrid could still finish top if they win and Inter beat Shakhtar, but they could also finish bottom if they lose and Inter win.

Women’s football in India moving forward : Ashalata
New Delhi, Dec 2 (IANS): India captain Ashalata Devi feels women’s football in the country has come a long way forward where they can compete against “high-profile opponents”. Thirty women footballers have been called up for a national camp that began from Tuesday in Goa. This is the first senior national women’s camp after coronavirus-induced lockdown. The centre-back also feels their performance has improved because of the exposure matches in recent times that the All India Football Federation has arranged to help the team. “In the last 2-3 years, we have played a lot of exposure matches. When we went to Spain for the COTIF Cup, we played against some high-profile opponents. Playing those high-intensity games have helped us elevate our performance in recent times,” Ashalata said on AIFF TV. She mentioned the importance of strength and conditioning training,
which have been added to the regime of late by head coach Maymol Rocky. She highlighted the immediate impact of video analysis, which has also been introduced by Maymol. “Firstly, we did not know the importance of strength training but now we understand it. Maymol ma’am has introduced things like strength training, injury prevention programs, video analysis and a lot more to help us gauge our mistakes and work on them to move forward together,” Ashalata stated. “Even during the lockdown, every one of us has stuck to the diet plan and fitness regime that has been provided to us. Once the camp resumes, I hope everyone will be fit enough to get one’s game on,” she added. The 27-year-old la-
mented that there are places in the country where people are unaware of women’s football. Back-to-back multi-national women’s football tournaments (like
FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup and AFC Women’s Asian Cup, both of which are set to be held in 2022) will increase the interest in women’s football.

L o nd o n , D e c 2 (Agencies): Teenage sensation Curtis Jones scored his first European goal to send Liverpool into the last-16 of the UEFA Champions League on Tuesday as they beat Ajax Amsterdam at Anfield. Jones netted in the 58th-minute to ensure top spot in Group D for Juergen Klopp’s side with 12 points after rivals Atalanta were held to a 1-1 draw at home to Midtjylland. 19-year-old Jones scored after connecting with a cross from fellow 19-year-old academy graduate Neco Williams, taking advantage of stranded goalkeeper André Onana and clipping the ball into the net with the outside of his right boot in the 58th minute. “The kids played exceptional. We defended like devils. It is not that we played the best, best football. “We are top of the group after match day five and we’ve never done that before. Unbelievably good,” Klopp said after weeks of gripes about the game schedule being to blame for a succession of injuries. A j a x , w i t h s eve n points, are a point adrift of second-placed Atalanta and need victory over the Italians in their final group game to reach the last 16.

India beat Aus by 13-run; avoid whitewash Jamshedpur FC, Hyderabad
Canberra, Dec 2 (IANS): India, riding on a 150-run partnership between Hardik Pandya and Ravindra Jadeja for the sixth wicket and a threewicket haul from Shardul Thakur, pulled off a 13-run consolation win in a closely fought the third and final One-day International and avoided conceding a clean sweep to Australia here at the Manuka Oval. Australia took the ODI series 2-1. Glenn Maxwell’s 59 off 38 at the back-end of Australia innings threatened to take the game away from India, who had the Aussies on the mat at 158 five wickets after scoring 302 for five wickets in their 50 overs. However, with Australia needing 35 off 33 deliveries, Maxwell tried to back away to a Jasprit Bumrah yorker and was bowled. The Aussie tail, which can bat, however found it tough and fell short. Earlier, half-centuries from Pandya, Jadeja as well as skipper Virat Kohli helped India set up a competitive 303-run target. Winning the toss for the first time in the series, India got off to a decent start as Shikhar Dhawan and Gill added 26 runs before the former became the first scalp of pacer Sean Abbott. Kohli, who came into bat at number three, then stitched a 56-run partnership with Gill and brought the Indian innings back on track. However, just when India looked all set for a big total, the two Australia spinners -- Adam Zampa (1/45) and Ashton Agar (2/44) -- came into action and shared three wickets (Gill 33, Shreyas Iyer 19 and KL Rahul 5) among themselves to bring Australia on top with India reeling at 123/4

matches of the series, failed to make an impact scoring just seven. Maxwell came into bat with Australia at 158 for five in just over 30 overs, needing another 145 to overhaul India’s total. The right-handed batsman, who was dismissed just when the Aussies were closing in on a win, hit two sixes off Jadeja’s one over and then launched into debutant T Natarajan and took 18 runs off his eighth over along with Ashton Agar to tilt the balance Australia’s way in a humdinger. But after his dismissal, it all fell apart for the hosts. BRIEF SCORES: India 302/5 (Hardik Pandya 92 not out, Ravindra Jadeja 66 not out; Ashton Agar 2/44) beat Australia 289 all out in 49.3 overs (A Finch 75, G Maxwell 59, S Thakur 3/51, J Bumrah 2/43, T Natarajan 2/70) by 13 runs

FC play out 1-1 draw in ISL
Jamshedpur FC players during the 7th season of the Hero Indian Super League against Hyderabad FC, at Tilak Maidan Stadium in Goa, Wednesday. (PTI) New Delhi, Dec 2 (Agencies): Jamshedpur FC managed to snatch a point from Hyderabad FC as the teams played out a 1-1 draw in their third match in the Indian Super League (ISL) on Wednesday at the Tilak Maidan, Goa. Aridane Santana handed the lead to the home team in the 50th minute but Stephen Eze’s equaliser in the 85th minute sealed a point for the Men of Steel, reports goal.com. Both teams underwent a few changes in their lineups from their previous encounters. Manuel Marquez made four changes in the Hyderabad starting XI as Laxmikant Kattimani, Hitesh Sharma, Mohammed Yasir and Liston Colaco were given the nod ahead of Subrata Paul, Lluis Sastre, Joel Chianese and Nikhil Poojari. Meanwhile, Owen Coyle replaced a suspended Rehenesh TP with Pawan Kumar and Isaac Vanmalawma with Amarjit Singh. It was a cagey start to the match as both teams took a safety-first approach. As the game progressed
Hyderabad grew into the game in spite of them playing with just three overseas players. They were dominating proceedings and were frequently venturing into the attacking third but lacked the final pass which would split open the backline. Interestingly, the first significant chance of the match fell for Coyle’s men when Jackichand Singh came close to scoring but his attempted shot was palmed out by Kattimani. But the best opportunity of the half was carved out by Hyderabad’s Halicharan Narzary when the winger shrugged away Dinliana and fired in a curler from the left side of the penalty box. The keeper was beaten but the ball hit the wrong side of the far post before going out of play. Hyderabad took an early lead in the second half thanks to some sloppy goalkeeping by Pawan Kumar. Hitesh Sharma sent a long ball for Halicharan, who cut in from the left inside the box and attempted a shot on goal. Pawan unconvincingly slapped the ball away
from going in but Aridane pushed the rebound ball into the net. Owen Coyle brought in Isaac Vanmalsawma and Aniket Jadhav around the hour mark in search of an equaliser. Marquez, on the other end, focused on sitting back and protecting their lead. Jamshedpur were denied a genuine goal in the 76th minute when Kattiman’s attempt to fist Aitor Monroy’s free-kick hit Aridane and went in. But the linesman flagged Peter Hartley offside and ruled out the goal. The replays though suggested the Jamshedpur skipper was in no way in an offside position. The Men of Steel finally restored parity in the game in the 85th minute thanks to a thunderous strike from Stephen Eze. Valskis initiated the move with a cross which Adil Khan cleared but the ball fail to Monroy who set up for Eze to shoot and the Nigerian found the back of the net.
