Spl. Correspondent/Agencies

NEW DELHI/GUWAHATI, DEC 4 (NPN): The Central government has decided to make 100% funding for central projects in North East India, a step aimed at addressing the financing concerns of projects in the region. Earlier, such projects were funded on a 90:10 pattern— 90% from the Centre and 10% from state. “But our government has taken a cabinet decision for making all centrally funded projects for Northeast India as 100% centrally funded,” Union minister of state for DoNER, Dr. Jitendra Singh said while addressing the meeting of “NITI Aayog Forum for Northeast” in Guwahati Tuesday. Many of the states were delaying submission of utilisation certificates (UCs) and the DoNER ministry is trying to overcome that, he said. “Projects are being monitored on a real-time basis. Geo-tagged photos of different projects are uploaded on the DoNER (Ministry for Development of North Eastern Region) and North Eastern Council websites,” Singh said.

Fuel prices fall for 13th day NEW DELHI, DEC 4 (AGENCIES): Petrol, diesel prices were slashed for the 13th straight day on Tuesday tracking a fall in international crude prices and the rupee’s appreciation against the US dollar. After Tuesday’s revision petrol became cheaper by 21-23 paise, diesel prices, on the other hand, witnessed a cut of up to 30 paise across major cities across the country. Travails of ordinary visitors to Hornbill Correspondent

KOHIMA, DEC 4 (NPN): Hornbill Festival, billed as the ‘mother of festivals’ and an international one at that, has managed to continue for the past 18 years, since 2000 when the idea took shape, to celebrate Nagaland Statehood Day through a kaleidoscope of cultural items. Since then, Hornbill Festival has been sustained mainly because the state government has been the main organiser and event manager of the entire ten-day hectic ‘cultural festival-turned-carnival’ that temporarily freezes the entire state machinery. There has been both positive and negative aspects of the Hornbill Festival and to the credit of the state government, for creating an interesting programme, compressed to ten days for giving that boost to tourism.

In a recent post on social media, a foreign tourist reveals the various problems faced while visiting Nagaland to witness the much-hyped Hornbill International Festival. One complaint was that the government website on Hornbill was not interac-

tive since queries are never answered. Many travel on their own and on reaching Kohima, are literally left without any place to stay as all hotels have been booked months ahead. The homestays in and around Kohima have helped but the problem of high cost of food items

and conveyance left much to be desired. One point noted was that the Hornbill Festival should maintain and showcase Naga local cultural flavour and not turned it into a mish-mash of various cultures from other states. (Cont’d on p-7)

Differently-abled stall at Honrbill Festival Govt rejects armed forces demand Correspondent

KOHIMA, DEC 4 (NPN): Amidst hundreds of stalls managed by many talented and successful entrepreneurs at the on-going 10-day Hornbill Festival at Naga Heritage Village Kisama, there is one stall managed by special children-- all differently-abled -- that has become a centre of attraction. The determination and cheerfulness of students from Cherry Blossoms School, which showed their strong will power, are winning the hearts of every visitor as they have overcome their physical disability to prove that they are inferior to none. Smile awaits every visitor who enters the stall that has an interesting collection, including gifts items, gift bags and decorative pieces, made by the children who are physically challenged. cial children has set up food stall where food is served by them with assistance from their teachers. The group include children with intellectual disability, cerebral palsy, visually impaired, hearing impaired, etc. Cherry Blossoms School director Purnima Kayina said the main objective of the initiative was to

bring out the students and help them explore the outer world and make them feel equal with others. She explained that the stall was set up to showcase their talent in crafts and handiwork, provide them equal opportunities like others, empower them and give them the chance to get exposed to the society as

many like them were mostly shunned and confined to homes. She added that by doing this, their confidence increased and created a sense of responsibility in them. Purnima asserted that School was committed to ensure that every special child received quality and inclusive education without any discrimination or exclusion. With the promise to make all children feel equal, the director claimed that school encouraged and trained students even with disability. They are provided not only academic curricula, but also skills to earn their livelihood and live a normal life like every one, she added. School rehabilitation therapist Zeneilienuo Solo said people had been constantly supporting the school’s initiative by visiting the stall and purchasing items, besides encouraging the special children to perform even better in future.

for higher MSP; army anguished

NEW DELHI, DEC 4 (PTI): NDA-led government has rejected a longstanding demand of the armed forces for higher Military Service Pay (MSP) for over 1.12 lakh military personnel, including Junior Commissioned Officers of the Army, official sources said on Tuesday. They told PTI that the Army headquarters is “very anguished” over the decision by the Finance Ministry, and will seek its immediate review. Around 1.12 lakh military personnel, including 87,646 JCOs and 25,434 personnel of equivalent rank from the Navy and the Indian Air Force, will be affected by the decision. The demand was to increase the monthly MSP from Rs 5,500 to Rs 10,000 and the total annual financial outgo would have been

Rs 610 crore if the government had accepted the demand, sources said. The MSP for the military personnel was introduced recognising their unique service conditions and hardships. “The proposal for higher MSP for JCOs and equivalent rank of the Navy and IAF has been rejected by the Finance Ministry,” said a source. At present, the MSP has two categories-one for officers and another for JCOs and jawans. The seventh Pay Commission had fixed Rs 5,200 as MSP per month for JCOs and jawans while putting it at Rs 15,500 for officers between Lieutenant-rank and Brigadier-rank. The Army has been pressing for granting an higher MSP to the JCOs, arguing that they are gazetted

officers (Group B) and play a very vital role in command and control structure of the force. “Since JCOs are Group B gazetted officers and also have considerable length of service, it is incorrect to grant them MSP on par with the jawans. It is very unfair,” said a military officer who wished not to be named. The Army had taken up the issue strongly with the Defence Minister and the three services as well as the Defence Ministry were on the same page on the issue, the sources said. The MSP was first introduced by the 6th Pay Commission, accounting for compensation for intangible aspects of military service. It accounts for a range of “hardships and disadvantages” which cannot be evaluated while assessing pay comparability. K Y M C

Lamhai Village Council reacts to statement

DIMAPUR: Reacting to the statement issued by Y. Botovi Zhimo, Head GB of Kiyevi village wherein the descendants of Kiyevi and GBs demanded “public apology”, Lamhai Village Council (LVC) expressed shock that the descendants of Kiyevi or Lotavi, who were the pioneers of Kiyevi village, could betray the landowner who had generously donated land for the establishment of Kiyevi village. Stating that facts cannot be distorted, LVC chairman Haibamko and Head GB Amezi in a press note claimed that a group led by Kiyevi and Lotavi had approached Lamhai village leaders in 1939 and sought permission to establish the village. Though no written agreement was

made in 1939, since there was no literate person in both the parties, LVC however claimed that there were numerous documents from the district administration acknowledging Lamhai as the landowner. Clarifying that it was not against recognition of Khehoi village, LVC however said it cannot allow Kiyevi village to donate any land to Khehoi or any other people for establishment of village without the consent or approval of the landowner. It further said that LVC was not interested in any paper war, and therefore asserted that it will not issue any clarification or rejoinder relating to this issue unless compelled to do so.

IMPHAL, Dec 4: Wildlife experts investigating into the mysterious slaughter of livestock in Manipur have ruled out involvement of any predator in some recent incidents in Churachandpur and Kangpokpi. The exper ts were, however, still clueless to the string of attacks and killing of livestock in other places and claims of sighting the unidentified creature particularly in valley areas. A team of experts from Wildlife Institute of India (WII) has been camping in Imphal and investigating into the incidents of mysterious killing of livestock. The slaughter of livestock started from hill district of Churachandpur where the first incident was reported in Chiengkawnpang village on October 27 after a large number of chickens and ducks were

found slaughtered with its mutilated carcasses left behind. Officials of the state veterinary department investigating into the series of killing of livestock in Churachandpur district, in its preliminary report, suggested that the domestic animals might have been killed by predators having sharp teeth. However, Wildlife Institute of India scientists opined that the domestic animals might have been killed by human beings as the carcasses bore no teeth marks and they were ripped open very cleanly. They further ruled out involvement of any predator in the recent killing of a cow and dismemberment of a cow’s horn at a village in Kangpokpi district. However, chief conservator of forest (CCF) Anurag Vajpayee said, police would examine some cases of killing domestic animals in Churachandpur

and Kangpokpi. Regarding the series of attack on livestock in valley districts, the CCF said that experts from the Wildlife Institute of India, Dehradun camping in Imphal along with the officials of state forest department have laid camera traps at various places in their efforts to identify the predator(s). Wildlife forensic experts in the WII team have suggested that wolves may be behind the killing while citing similar incident in Odisha last year. However, Vajpayee ruled the opinion saying that wolves are not found in Manipur. Wolf dogs are found in Nagaland but it is very rare in Manipur, he said, adding that the experts were studying whether the killings are perpetrated by jackals or pet dogs. The experts were also studying whether the predators were leopard cats or jungle cats, he said.

Guwahati, Dec 4 (PTI): Assam is all set for the first phase of the panchayat elections on Wednesday in 16 administrative districts, that will see a contest between the coalition partners, BJP and the AGP, along with others. Ruling allies--BJP and the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), are fighting local bodies polls in the state separately and the campaigning witnessed high-octane war of words between them. AGP, which has publically opposed the Citizenship Bill, 2016, used Citizenship Bill as one of their main campaign issue in the three-tier panchayat elections in the state. The first phase of the

employees engaged as polling officials on Tuesday fanned out to their respective assigned voting stations across the state with ballot boxes and other election materials. Campaigning for the first phase of panchayat polls, which ended on Monday, saw the coalition partners voicing sharp words for each other. AGP accused the BJP of attempting to impose the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016, in Assam which they said threatened the existence and identity of indigenous people by settling Hindu Bangladeshis in the state, while the saffron party claimed the regional party piggy rode on its back to come to power during the Assembly elections. The opposition Congress and the AIUDF also campaigned hard for votes. Altogether 1,56,41,456 voters, including 7,51,76,21 females, are expected to exercise their franchise in the two-phased elections to be held on Wednesday and on December 9. For both the phases, there would be 23,505 polling stations with 11,597 of them categorised as comparatively safe, 8,243 sensitive and 3,665 very sensitive, the sources said. The counting of votes will take place on December 12.

Four held for Bulandshahr violence

Samajwadi Party workers take part in a candle light march to pay tribute to police inspector Subodh Singh, who was killed in Monday’s mob violence in Bulandshahr, in Allahabad, Tuesday. (PTI) Bulandshahr (UP), Dec 4 (PTI): Four persons were arrested for their alleged involvement in mob violence that broke out after cow carcasses were found strewn in a jungle, killing a police inspector and a passer-by, police said Tuesday, as the grieving and angry families tried to come to terms with the senseless deaths. Bajrang Dal district convenor Yogesh Raj, the main accused in the killing of Inspector Subodh Kumar Singh and 20-yearold Sumit Kumar on Monday, is on the run, officials said. There was heavy deployment of security forces in the area and tension spiralled as angry families demanded justice for their kin. Twenty-seven people have been named in the FIR, registered around 3 am following the violence

Monday, while cases have been lodged against 50 to 60 unidentified people, police officials said. Of the 27 named, at least four are workers and functionaries of right-wing organisations, including the Bajrang Dal, officials said. There was considerable confusion about the number of those arrested with police officials first saying four, then three and finally four again. Additional Director General of Police (Law and Order) Anand Kumar told reporters six police teams were working on the case and trying to identify the accused by monitoring video footage. “Tension has eased in strife-torn Bulandshahr and efforts are on to ensure there is no trouble in future,” he said in Lucknow. After Sushma, Uma Bharti not to contest 2019 polls Bhopal, Dec 4 (IANS): Close on the heels of Union Minister Sushma Swaraj announcing her decision not to contest the next Lok Sabha polls, Central Minister Uma Bharti on Tuesday said she too would not join the 2019 election fray. Uma Bharti told the media that although she had decided not to contest the parliamentary elections, she was not taking ‘sanyas’ from active politics yet. “I’ll start work for the construction of Ram Mandir

in Ayodhya and for the cause of holy Ganga from January 1,” she said. Uma Bharti now represents Jhansi-Lalitpur constituency in Parliament and is the Cabinet Minister for Drinking Water and Sanitation. Prior to that, she was Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh. External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj, an MP from Vidisha in Madhya Pradesh, has already declared she would not be contesting the upcoming Lok Sabha election.

and Sumit died of gunshot injuries, the inspector, who was posted at the Siana Police Station, also received injuries from hard and blunt objects, Kumar said. As police continued their investigations, emotions ran high as the families prepared for the last rites. Singh’s body, draped in the tricolour, was given a gun salute. From Bulandshahr, the body was taken to his ancestral home in Etah. Demanding “martyr” status for the slain inspector, who was one of those who initially probed the 2015 lynching of Mohammed Akhlaq, his sister alleged his killing was a conspiracy of the police and demanded martyr status for him. “My brother was killed in a police conspiracy as he was probing a cow slaugh-

No trace of nine missing girls: DCW chief New Delhi, Dec 4 (IANS): Delhi Commission of Women (DCW) Chairperson Swati Maliwal on Tuesday said the fact that there was still no trace of the missing nine girls from a shelter home in Delhi suggests insensitive attitude of the police. She has appealed to the Commissioner to transfer the case to the Crime Branch. “It is disappointing that even after two days, the police have no clue about the girls. They are busy proving that most of the girls were majors. This reveals the insensitive attitude of the police. Major or minor, the girls need to be traced urgently,” Maliwal said. The DCW Chief appealed to the Police Commissioner to transfer the case to the Crime Branch for speedy investigation. Earlier in the day, Maliwal along with other Commission members visited Sanskar Ashram, the shelter home from where the nine girls are reported missing. Maliwal said these girls were earlier rescued from GB Road by the DCW. According to the Commission, the condition of the home was “dismal and suffocating”. The team also found that the girls were not given adequate food and clothes. The girls living there have complained that their regular medical check-up has not been done. Following the incident, Delhi’s Deputy CM Manish Sisodia on Monday directed state Chief Secretary Anshu Prakash to immediatedly suspend the District Officer and the shelter home Superintendent.

Rahul attacks PM over Joseph’s claim New Delhi, Dec 4 (PTI): Congress chief Rahul Gandhi Tuesday attacked Prime Minister Narendra Modi over exSupreme Court judge Kurian Joseph’s claim about alleged interference in administration of justice by the apex court, alleging that the ‘chowkidar’ had made a judge his “courtpuppet”. Gandhi further said it was the bad luck of the ‘chowkidar’ (watchman), a term he often uses for Modi, that there was no dearth of honest judges who do not allow “arrogance of power to prevail over truth”. The Congress president’s attack follows a sensational claim made by the recently retired judge Joseph that the previous Chief Justice of India Dipak Misra was “remotecontrolled by an external source”. Justice Joseph, however, did not elaborate on who the “external source” was and which were the cases in which administration of justice was affected. There was no immediate reaction from the government or the BJP, while Misra has also not reacted to the allegation. “The chowkidaar had made a Supreme Court judge his ‘cour t-putli’ (court-puppet),” Gandhi tweeted. “It’s chowkidar’s bad luck that there is no dearth of honest judges in the country for whom truth is always bigger than power and who do not allow arrogance of power to prevail over truth. The country is proud of such

Later, at a press conference, senior Congress leader Kapil Sibal also raised the issue, saying, “We want to ask the prime minister who was remote-controlling (the ex-CJI). If you know then tell the people and if you don’t know then order an inquiry.” “It has been proved that our impeachment motion was based on facts,” Sibal said. In April, the Congress and six other opposition parties had moved a notice for the impeachment of then CJI Misra, accusing him of five counts of “misbehaviour” and “misusing” authority. Vice President Venkaiah Naidu had rejected the ‘impeachment motion’. “They also alleged that I did not want that hearing should take place (in the Ram temple case), but they do not know that I did not appear in the case

after December 2017...the hearing was continuing in the Supreme Court,” Sibal said. Joseph was among the four senior judges of the apex court who had staged an open revolt against former CJI Misra by convening an unprecedented press conference on January 12 to flag their concerns about preferential allocation of sensitive cases to judges low down on the top court’s hierarchy. Justices J Chelameswar, who has since retired, Ranjan Gogoi, the current Chief Justice and Madan Lokur were the other judges. The Congress had on Monday said Justice Joseph’s remarks proved its allegations against the government of interference in the highest levels of judiciary, and demanded separate parliamentary and judicial inquiries into the matter.

BJP inducting criminals into party fold, alleges NCP

Mumbai, Dec 4 (PTI): The NCP has accused the BJP of allowing criminals into its fold leading to law and order problems in Maharashtra, a charge dismissed by the ruling party as “baseless”. Nationalist Congress Party’s (NCP) national spokesperson Nawab Malik claimed that members of underworld don Chhota Rajan’s gang have become office-bearers of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). “The BJP is allowing criminals in its fold, be it

Modi slams Cong over Khartarpur

in Nagpur, Pune or other small cities,” he told reporters in Maharashtra’s Dhule district on Monday after campaigning for NCP candidates ahead of the municipal corporation polls scheduled there on December 9. Malik referred to a media report about Rajan’s brother-in-law Rahul Walunj being appointed as an office-bearer by the BJP three years ago. “(Union

minister Nitin) Gadkari had also earlier said they (the BJP) will turn ‘Valya Kolis into Valmiki’ (goons into saints). So, they have initiated a programme to turn such people into Valmiki, threatening the law and order situation,” the NCP leader alleged. Notably, Union Water Resources Minister Gadkari had in April last year reportedly cited criticism faced

by the BJP for inducting criminals into the party, and said the entry of such people only changes them for good. Meanwhile, Maharashtra BJP spokesperson Keshav Upadhye termed Malik’s allegations as “baseless” and hit out at the NCP, saying it was at the forefront of criminalising politics. “The BJP has always fought against criminalisation of politics,” Upadhye said.

NAGALAND :: KOHIMA

NOTIFICATION

DC-1968

HANUMANGARH, Dec 4 (AGENCIES): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday used the Kartarpur corridor that would link India Pakistan to hit out at the Congress. He said the party would have to answer why this was not done 70 years ago. At an election rally at Hanumangarh, Rajasthan, ahead of elections in the State on December 7, he said Kartarpur went to Pakistan due to the lack of vision and sensitivity of then Congress leaders. The foundation stone for the much-awaited corridor linking Gurdwara Darbar Sahib in Pakistan’s Kartarpur — the final resting place of Sikh faith’s founder Guru Nanak Dev — to the Dera Baba Nanak shrine in India’s Gurdaspur district was laid last week. According to Modi, Kartarpur is in Pakistan today because then Congress leaders had no idea about the importance of Guru Nanak Dev and had no respect for Sikh sentiments. “The credit of the Kartarpur corridor goes to your vote. Correcting Congress’s mistakes was my destiny,” he said. The headlines five years ago were about corruption and scams. “Have you seen any news of this kind in the last five years” he asked.

ter case... He should be given martyr status and a memorial should be constructed in his name in our native place,” Sunita Singh told reporters. “The cow is our mother, I accept it. My brother has give his life for her. The CM used to chant ‘gau.. gau.. gau’.. Why can’t he come for ‘gau raksha’,” an emotional Sunita Singh asked, hitting out at Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. In Chingrawati village, Sumit’s family refused to conduct his last rites until the government assured Rs 50 lakh compensation, pension to his parents and a police job to his kin. His father Amarjeet Singh also demanded state funeral as accorded to Singh. Bulandshahr MP Bhola Singh and local MLA Devendra Lodhi, both from the BJP, visited Sumit’s family in Chingrawati. Lodhi accused the district administration and police of improper handling of the case. While Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) chief Mayawati blamed the “irresponsible and wrong” policies of the BJP government in Uttar Pradesh for the mob violence, the CPI(M) held Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s “communally provocative speeches” responsible. The violence was “planned” in view of 2019 Lok Sabha polls, it said. The rampaging mob protesting alleged illegal cow slaughter torched a police post here and clashed with cops on Monday, according to police.

Quota vote bank

ommunities such as the Scheduled Castes (SCs), Scheduled Tribes (STs) and the Other Backward Classes (OBCs) have been given the benefit of reservation policies because of their historical marginalisation in the Indian subcontinent. As the economic gap between the SCs STs and OBCs have gradually narrowed, those outside the purview of reservations, especially the middle class, are most unhappy with the growing demands and have even contemplated a demand to do away with quotas. For the past few years, youth from numerous peasant castes across the country have been agitating for reservation. As the 2019 general elections approach, their demands are likely to grow louder. While Patel leader , Hardik Patel, failed to move the Gujarat movement, the demand for reservations for Marathas kept the Maharashtra government on tenterhooks and as politics got the better of logic, the Maharathas got 16% job reservation. On November 29, Maharashtra Assembly unanimously passed a legislation granting 16 per cent reservation to the Maratha community under the socially and educationally backward category. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis had tabled the Bill along with an Action Taken Report (ATR) on Maharashtra State Backward Class Commission’s (MSBCC) recommendations in the Assembly. With the approval of the quota, reservations in the state have surpassed the 50 per cent ceiling set by the Supreme Court for state governments and the Centre. At present, the total reservations in the state is 52 per cent. The 16 per cent reservation approved for the Marathas will take the number to 68 per cent. Even Jats in Haryana have threatened to resume their agitation demanding Other Backward Class (OBC) status. The Jats, an agrarian middle caste that has been clamouring for OBC status since the late 1990s and their stir in 2016 , took a particularly fierce and hostile turn. Their protests included the blockade of the capital city of Delhi which is surrounded by Haryana on three sides. However, the BJP government in Haryana headed by Manohar Lal Kathar, himself a Jat, just folded up against those who indulged in violence and terror. Since 2015, the Patels or Patidars have been on the streets, demanding to be classified as OBC as their movement occasionally turned violent with damage to public property. The three groups demanding OBC status and, in turn, access to reservations (quotas), are already closer to the upper castes than to the more disadvantaged groups in their respective states. Their anxieties seem to be based more on perception than on empirical evidence. India Human Development Survey (IHDS) data, suggests that Jats in Haryana, Marathas in Maharashtra, and the Patels in Gujarat are, in many respects, as well off as the forward castes. One arena in which this dominance is quite marked is politics. Numerous leaders from these groups have been elected as chief ministers. In Haryana, for instance, there have been six Jat chief ministers, who have collectively held the position for more than three decades. In Maharashtra, there have been 14 Maratha chief ministers who have held the seat for more than four decades. Before current chief minister of Gujarat, Vijay Rupani, there have been four Patel chief ministers, including his predecessor Anandiben Patel. With quota politics becoming a vote bank, whatever little logic behind will soon cause economic and social collapse.

DailyDevotion The Law of Opposition

To him who overcomes… —Revelation 2:7 Life without war is impossible in the natural or the supernatural realm. It is a fact that there is a continuing struggle in the physical, mental, moral, and spiritual areas of life. Health is the balance between the physical parts of my body and all the things and forces surrounding me. To maintain good health I must have sufficient internal strength to fight off the things that are external. Everything outside my physical life is designed to cause my death. The very elements that sustain me while I am alive work to decay and disintegrate my body once it is dead. If I have enough inner strength to fight, I help to produce the balance needed for health. The same is true of the mental life. If I want to maintain a strong and active mental life, I have to fight. This struggle produces the mental balance called thought. Morally it is the same. Anything that does not strengthen me morally is the enemy of virtue within me. Whether I overcome, thereby producing virtue, depends on the level of moral excellence in my life. But we must fight to be moral. Morality does not happen by accident; moral virtue is acquired. And spiritually it is also the same. Jesus said, “In the world you will have tribulation…” (John 16:33). This means that anything which is not spiritual leads to my downfall. Jesus went on to say, “… but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.” I must learn to fight against and overcome the things that come against me, and in that way produce the balance of holiness. Then it becomes a delight to meet opposition. Holiness is the balance between my nature and the law of God as expressed in Jesus Christ.

Christmas without Christ B

Statement on Kuki-Naga clash

L

ast week, during a shopping for some Christmas decorations in one popular shop in the town, there were hundreds of glittering balls, lights, stars, lanterns, Santas and reindeers, socks and hockey sticks, shiny leaves and red berries of different sizes, artificial hollies etc. one thing was missing in all these. Not even a single image of the Birthday Boy or a picture of the Nativity scene was seen amongst these thousands of decorative items. It’s sad that people have become so materialistic that they have lost the real reason of the celebration and meaning of Christmas. Beneath all these glitz and glam, let us repose our faith and rejuvenate our conviction in the birth of Christ. The Mass is meaningless without Christ in it. He is the reason for the season. It’s Christmas time once again. It’s a season of joy and celebration of Christ’s birth. It has also become a time for releasing one’s showy tendencies of flashy acts of conceit ,egotism and airs of ’better than others’, be it in one’s decorations, dresses, feasts, gifts etc .Materialism and commercialization seems to have hijacked the spirit of spirituality of Christmas. Many of the things we see around epitomizes of getting accustomed ourselves with dispensation of mass insanity of worldly happenings with a tinge of snobbery and vanity .It’s hard to recollect when the unadulterated Christmas in our times even took place. Another reason for the changing perspective of Christmas by many is the secularism spirit which has sprouted wide with the spread of multiculturalism in many society of today’s world. Today’s Christmas imagery is said to have been loaded with nods from the Victorian Era where many of the traditions we hold dear, from Santa Claus to wrapping papers were born. For many of us now it’s a season for exchanging Christmas cakes, decorating our homes with Christmas trees and shining balls and bells, lighting candles, putting up stars ,wearing new clothes, buying new stuffs, organizing family gatherings and reunion with old friends around bonfires linked with wines and meats or coffees, cookies, donuts and so on. People celebrate Christmas differently from one another. For example my family celebrates Christmas by decorating our house. We also exchange gifts, attend church services, cook dinners for friends and relatives. Even though we do all these things, we do still remember the true meaning of Christmas. Stephen Nissenbaum has cataloged the rise of Christmas in his

book The Battle for Christmas. It's a fascinating chronicle of the way in which Christmas was shaped, and part of that shaping was the need of the people to buy things. In particular, the rise of the concept of the Christmas present - "the kind of gift that could be most conveniently procured through a purchase" was there from the very beginning. Already by the 1820s publishers were producing fancy and expensive "gift books" and other specialty gifts specifically for giving during Christmas. By the 1840s merchants were using the image of Santa Claus in advertising as a way to entice spending. In fact, Nissenbaum concludes that in the 1800s, "Christmas became a crucial means of legitimizing the penetration of consumerist behavior into American society." Of late, Christmas season seems to be connected with endless run of carnivals, crackers, concerts in every nook and corner of our dwellings. But in the midst of all these hustle-bustle, we seem to be forgetting the most important part and the main reason of the season – The Birthday Boy; Jesus Christ whose birth we are celebrating. For many people, Christmas is a time of sorrow. They don't have the extra money to buy presents for their children, family, and friends. Many are saddened at Christmas time when they think of what they cannot afford what others are enjoying. Many people are sad because they cannot decorate their homes, buy new clothes and stuffs. There are many who cannot even afford even a Christmas cake to share it with their children. While the rich and the haves share and exchange expensive Christmas cakes and gifts, for the have-nots, it is a time of despair and sadness. To many Christians it has become a season of feasting and merry making, wild revelries with drunken stupor, endless night of wild parties without sleep and countless unending events and not to mention the bursting of crackers and fireworks worth of lakhs which do not in any way reveal the true spirit and the essence of this occasion. In other words, our Christmas now seems to be replaced with so much of commercialization and materialistic outlook that the real reason seems to have been stored away in the backyards of most people’s minds. While the real reason of Jesus coming into this world was to save us from our sins celebrating it in a joyful way is not wrong to celebrate but what goes overboard is our inability to overcome the materialistic pursuits and overtaking Christ’s meaning of coming into this world. We seem so much to be lost that we cannot get

out of the maze we are in. Let us celebrate Christmas by start teaching our families the significance of Jesus’ birth by celebrating the Christmas in a true meaningful way. The Christmas season is a wonderful opportunity to spread the gospel message and Christ’s love for the world. His lowly birth in the manger from poor parents depicts the humbleness of Christ. Being in the end of year, it is the busiest season for everyone. Again with it the weddings, jubilees, centenaries and annual sessions of every organisation it’s a race against time to complete before the year ends. Obligatory attendances in countless events add more stress and our blood pressures levels shooting up. The true meaning seems to be getting buried in these unending chapters and ever increasing amount of worldly affairs created by ourselves. Added to this, the commercial hype and the happening makes us forget what’s it’s all about in our conscious level. Christmas holidays should be a time for relaxation. It should be time to spend with our families and friends. A time for reflection of our relationship with whose birthday we are celebrating. Let us all free ourselves from all the anxiety and materialism. For many people today, the true meaning of Christmas has no importance as long as they enjoy the festive season to their fullest. In the midst of all the commercialism and revelries let us not forget the true meaning of the occasion. The radical gospel of Jesus Christ is as (or more) relevant now than ever before. Hundreds of thousands of folks in thousands of churches across the world will be celebrating the truth this Christmas: that a Saviour has been born to free mankind from all the ills of the world. While this is a day to celebrate Jesus, it is also a day to remember what Jesus did. Jesus helped those in need such as the poor, the sick, the hungry, the oppressed, and the ones who don’t know Him. He provided the help to anyone who needed it. As Christians, we have always been taught to love thy neighbor, and it's time we started acting on what Jesus preached. The Christmas season is perfect season to feed, donate, and share some time with the lonely and homeless, as well as appreciating our loved ones that surround us. It's a time to really feel the "true spirit of Christmas" through the helping of others. The meaning of Christmas is still there for those who seek it but lost completely for those who don’t bother about it. Wishing a very Merry Christmas to everyone. Jonah Achumi

efore the coming of Christianity, the hill people were fighting among themselves; one village fought against another village and one clan against the other unceasingly. By that time, enmity, plundering villages, fighting and killing strangers and enemies were widely practiced among them and it was so with the Kukis and the Nagas too. There are instances of how the Kukis attacked many Naga villages and massacred the Nagas. But, after the acceptance of the good news of Jesus Christ, the Savior of the world, they changed. They started living together peacefully in Him. It is indeed, a change of life from the darkness into the light. It is a historic move from the world of barbarism to civilization. With the commencement of the Naga national resistance movement against the aggressors, hardened collaborators and informers of the enemies- Nagas or Kukis, who lives in the same country were given harsh punishments. But, some Kukis not knowing their crimes would like to retaliate upon the Nagas. So, a Kuki called Pu Rawthangliana from Churachandpur formed a volunteer force in 1980. These Kuki volunteers hurt the sentiment of our Naga brothers very much. But, that did not last long on account of the arrest of their leader for bank robbery in Churachandpur. Sometime in 1984-86 some Kuki Chiefs and leaders tried to form Kuki Commandos in collaboration with the Indian Army to fight the Naga freedom fighters but that also ended in vain. On 24th February, 1988, a man from Kangpokpi area called Late Pu Nehlun Kipgen founded the Kuki National Front (KNF) at Molnoi village, Burma (Myanmar). They tried to go to Kachin for basic training, but the Kachin Independent Army (KIA) did not accept their request on account of their objective to fight the Nagas. So, the Chairman (L) Pu Nehlun returned from Burma in search of another supporting organization in the North East regions. After that, the Haokips ousted him from the Chairmanship and replaced him with Late Pu Thangkholun Haokip. In November 1991, (L) Pu Nehlun Kipgen along with some followers came to Kamjong area in Ukhrul district and created situation. On their way, some Tangkhul Nagas who were sleeping in the jungle cutting trees for jhum cultivation in the land of Laiyang Ganpul village were threatened by Pu Nehlun and party at night to stop cutting their work and told all the Tangkhuls to leave the land and go to Nagaland for it is Kukis’ homeland and that they are from the KNA coming from Kachin. That was the real factor of Naga-Kuki clash of 1992-1998. In the early parts of 1993, the Kuki Defense Force (KDF) began to drive out the Nagas living in Moreh town. And fighting between the KDF and NSCN began there. So, KDF invited KNA for reinforcement in March, 1993. Some KNA members led by Pu Thangkholun Haokip went to Moreh and started burning villages and paddy storehouses of the Maring Nagas in Chandel district. Since then, the communal clashes between the two communities spread everywhere. In one of the incidents, the KNA eliminated nine (9) Tangkhul fishermen and laborers at Sana Nampan Lok in Ukhrul district in 1998. However, the Tangkhuls forgave the Kukis because the then Minister Mr. TN Haokip begged and apologized at a public meeting in Kamjong which was organized by the then Chief Minister of Manipur, (Late) Rishang Keishing. Therefore, condemning and blaming the Tangkhuls for the Kuki-Naga clash and the inscription on the monolith of Kuki Black Day as ‘Tangkhul-led NSCN-IM’ is unfounded and distortion of facts. It is nothing but sowing seeds of hatred and war between the Kuki tribe and the Naga nation, which will be cancerous to the health and harmonious social life of the future generations. I hope the rational Kuki general people are for reconciliation with their fellow brothers and sisters in Christ than for war which has created havoc to the human race in history. Holistic life style: A new way for looking for better and healthier life (From previous issue) Not everyday we will be equally successful in pushing us hard but every step taken today is a milestone for tomorrow as nothing is waste if we try to achieve something positive in life. One of the simple strategies is to try and integrate different exercise regimes throughout the week to avoid boredom and monotony including simple stretch ups and push ups, yoga and pranayam (breathing exercises), some cardio activities and simple long walks. The weekends could be dedicated to long walks as our weekdays are often too tight to accommodate time and lo to avoid monotony of hard exercise regimes. Also weather too plays an important part and one has to plan accordingly. Another excellent strategy for accommodating some physical training (particularly for home makers) into our daily life cycle can be integrating house work into physical exercise regime. The daily task of cooking, cleaning, wiping, vacuuming, brooming, washing, gardening can be integrated into regular physical activity in a rotational manner to avoid monotony. It is best to avoid elevators and climb the stairs instead, walk for smaller needs rather than driving and keep room for short walks and stretches in between desk work to keep our body in motion. It is

important to cut down on high curb, oil, fat and salt intake and move towards plant based fiber rich diet with some quality dairy products. Proteins could include chicken and different whole grain legumes and beans and better avoid too much consumption of red meat. This could be a good starting point for people who fail to do exercise regularly with 20-30 mins of physical activity every day. It is important for parents to realize that as their kids grow up they need to treat them as equal friends and not as commanding parents. In our culture, parents often consider their children as their extended ego or mirror shadow and dump all their personal aspirations, frustrations and depression on them. The level of expectations being too high they start suffering from depression with advancing age as their kids grow up and start having their own space in life and get engaged in their own circle. Parents feel neglected making their kid’s career, attention and prosperous future as their only goal in life. If parents keep pushing their kids beyond the final threshold level it only creates a huge communication gap or distance between them increasing over time. This pushes kids to move out of their close family circle and shift to their own personal

orbit where parents have no roles to play anymore. Every individual on this planet needs a personal space and a minimal privacy and parents need to remember and respect that. A healthy and friendly relationship between parents and their children always keeps a communication path open and enable both sides to reduce their difference through open and fair discussion and dialogue. In most developed and industrial nations of the west there is well organized educational and awareness programs as discussed above for their citizens to eat and live healthy to reduce pressure on their highly stretched health system promoting holistic health. Workshops are regularly conducted for couples becoming parents for the first time. There is parent and student counseling services available to educate students and their parents regarding educational prospects and about responsible guardianship. Psychological counseling is also available to assist concerned citizens suffering from both physical and mental stress as well as psychological illness. Furthermore, educational health, nutrition or medical workshops as well as hand on trainings are also provided for general citizens, immigrants, senior citizens, children, students, pregnant women, sexual minorities

regarding several potential health issues, socio-cultural as well socio-economic challenges. It is therefore important for the government to think about suitable mass education and awareness programs for the ordinary citizens to guide them in adopting holistic life style and become responsible citizens. If India

could introduce such mass education and awareness programs across the length and breadth of the nation, it will be one of the largest initiatives of its kind across the entire planet. India will be bale to make a hallmark difference with this in achieving holistic health and serve as a praiseworthy international model for the

rest of the works. Let the world’s largest democracy show the beacon to the world in this new initiative in changing people’s life towards better and healthier living and adopting holistic life style for a better, happier and more filling life. (Concluded) Saikat Kumar Basu, Canada

Travails of ordinary visitors to Hornbill

(From p-1)

The state government spends a huge amount for the ten-day festival and this year the budget was put at around Rs.5 crore but sources said the figure could go much higher. Those who earn the most out of Hornbill Festival are said to be tour operators from outside Nagaland who ferry in tourists. The festival has earned a niche for itself as among the important tourist

attractions in India and abroad but the issue of air and rail connectivity from other parts of India to Dimapur, has been a big disappointment. To promote tourism, the state government needs to prioritise connectivity to and from Dimapur. Also all those running hotels, guest houses and home-stays etc. should come up with a proper rate structure for food and lodging that is affordable and all these could be uploaded on the Hornbill website for tourists with all necessary information.

Sabarimala, Dec 4 (IANS): For the first time since the Sabarimala temple opened on November 16, there has been a sharp increase in the number of pilgrims. One reason attributed for this is that the protests of the Sangh parivar against the Supreme Court ruling allowing women of all ages to enter the temple and the arrest of its senior leader K. Surendran has shifted to the state Secretariat. The Congress-led UDF is going hammer and tongs against the Pinarayi Vijayan government in the Kerala Assembly. The Kerala government has promised to implement the apex court’s verdict that struck down a hitherto tradition of not allowing girls and women within 10-50 years from visiting the temple. On Tuesday, a threemember High Court appointed observer committee consisting of two retired judges and a serving Director General of Police arrived at the temple town to inspect the facilities and the arrangements for the pilgrims.

Chopper scam: Middleman being extradited to India DUBAI, DEC 4 (IANS): Christian James Michel, a British national and a middleman, has been extradited to India, a development that comes as a boost to Indian agencies investigating the Rs 3,600 crore AgustaWestland VVIP chopper deal case. The Gulf daily Khaleej Times reported that he had been taken to the Dubai International Airport for taking a flight to Delhi. Official sources in Delhi indicated that Michel will land in India late in the night. The action comes after the Court of Cassation here had in November upheld a lower court order which said that Michel could be extradited to India. According to the report, Michel was kept under detention at the Dubai Police’s Criminal Investigation Department (CID) as per the Indian government’s request. The extradition is undertaken in coordination with the Interpol and the CID. Michel is one of three middlemen

being probed in the case by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in connection with the scam. In January, the ED had lodged a request with the UAE authorities for extraditing Michel. Both the ED and the CBI had filed chargesheets in bribery cases in Indian courts and non-bailable warrants had been issued against the accused. Last year, a Red Corner notice

was issued against Michel by the Interpol on a request by the CBI. RCNs were also issued against two Italians involved in the scam -- Carlo Gerosa and Guido Haschke. According to Indian investigative agencies, Michel had received at least Rs 235 crore for ensuring that the chopper contract went to AgustaWestland. He was a frequent visitor to India, having undertaken 300 trips to this country between 1997 and 2013. The ED officials earlier had said that bribes to Michel were paid through a web of companies located abroad and in India on the pretext of payment for consultancy work. Michel also used his Dubai-based firm Global Services FZE as a conduit for money. In its chargesheet, the CBI had named former Indian Air Force chief S.P. Tyagi, his cousin Sanjeev Tyagi alias Julie, then IAF Vice Chief J.S. Gujral and advocate Gautam Khaitan as the four Indians involved in the scam.

formation Commissioner Sudhir Bhargava for not disclosing details of foreign donors of local NGOs. Government offices want their “rights” to be protected from the Information Commission created by the Union of India as per the will of the Parliament, Acharyulu said. “CIC is supposed to act as Information Tribunal to adjudicate second appeals without fear or favour. But I would like to bring it to your Excellency’s notice that Information Commissioners are feeling ‘legally’ intimidated from discharging their legal duties,” he said. Citing example of notices being sent to him in three capacities--as individual, as Information Commissioner, and as a person representing the Central Information Commission-- by the Gujarat High Court on a plea of Gujarat University against his order of disclosing degree details of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, he said as he is respondent number one, two and three, how does he defend in three capacities.

New Delhi, Dec 4 (PTI): Former Information Commissioner Sridhar Acharyulu Tuesday alleged that the Central Information Commission was facing threats of litigations filed against it by the government and sought President Ram Nath Kovind’s intervention. In a letter to the President, he highlighted a global trend of Strategic Lawsuit Against Public Participation (SLAPP) and said it is a “type of frivolous lawsuit, not undertaken to be won, necessarily, but to intimidate the target into ceasing public activities such as speaking out against an organisation or a person”. He cited two orders related to the RBI to drive home his point. “Here the target is the CIC and the citizens. Unfortunately the government bodies are SLAPPing writ petitions right, left and centre against the Respondent No. 1 - CIC and Respondent No. 2 - the Citizen who were asking for information as empowered by RTI Act,” he said. Care Ratings also cut its forecast by a similar measure to 7.4 per cent, saying the subdued pickup in economic activity in the second quarter and constraints in the financial system will dent growth. Analysts at Icra Ratings retained their growth forecast, but at a much lower level of 7.2 per cent. Similarly, India Ratings also reiterated its 7.3 per cent estimate.

Chandra said that due to demonetisation, so far, the number corporate tax payers have gone to 8 lakh from 7 lakh last year. CBDT, which is the apex policy making body for direct taxes, will in one year start giving e-PAN within four hours, he said. “We are putting a new system in place. After a year or so, we will be giving PAN in 4 hours, you will have to give Aadhaar identity and you will get e-PAN in 4 hours,” Chandra added.

He said that the department had sent two crore SMS to people who had not filed returns or those whose income did not match with their filings. Referring to department’s efforts of reducing human interface with of taxmen with taxpayers, Chandra said that so far this year more than 70,000 cases have been done online without calling assessees to tax offices. The CBDT chief noted that so far the department has given 2.27 crore refunds, which is 50 per cent higher than last year. In the last four years, India’s tax base has gone up by 80 per cent, he said. Chandra also said that, so far, India has entered 245 advance pricing agreement (APAs), and more than 500 tax matters have been solved under the mutual agreement procedure (MAP). Noting that the government was committed to reduce corporate tax rate, he said, “our tax compliance should be good so that the government is in a position to reduce the (corporate) tax rate.”

France halts fuel tax hike after protests Paris, Dec 4 (IANS): French Prime Minister Edouard Philippe on Tuesday announced a six-month suspension of a plan to introduce a fuel tax hike which has led to weeks of violent protests. The tax on petrol and diesel, due to increase next month in a move towards cleaner fuels, sparked protests that quickly escalated to reflect a range of grievances including the marginalization of rural areas, high living costs and general anger at President Emmanuel Macron’s economic policies. The demonstrations hit major French cities causing damage for the past three weekends. Three people died since the unrest began and resulted in violence and vandalism as statues were smashed at the Arc de Triomphe. Philippe said that people’s anger must be heard and the measures would not be applied until there had been proper debate with those affected, the BBC reported. He said the six-month

US will not stop Iran exporting oil: Rouhani Geneva, Dec 4 (Agencies): The United States will not be able to stop Iran exporting its oil and any move to prevent Iranian crude shipments passing through the Gulf would lead to all oil exports through the waterway being blocked, Iran’s president said on Tuesday. The United States has imposed sanctions on Iran and U.S. officials say they aim to reduce Iran’s oil exports to zero in a bid to curb the Islamic Republic’s missile programme and regional influence. “America should know that we are selling our oil and will continue to sell our oil and they are not able to stop our oil exports,” President Hassan Rouhani said in a televised speech during a trip to the northern Iranian city of Shahroud. “If one day they want to prevent the export of Iran’s oil, then no oil will be exported from the Persian Gulf,” he said. Tensions have risen between Iran and the United States after U.S. President Donald Trump withdrew from a multilateral nuclear deal in May and reimposed sanctions on the Islamic Republic. Rouhani said the United States would

In an interview, Khan said unless there was a dialogue, various options on resolution of Kashmir cannot be discussed. Khan said there were two or three solutions, which have been in discussions. He, however, refused to share more details, saying it was “too early to talk about them”. Khan claimed he was informed by late Atal Bihari Vajpayee during a conference that Kashmir would have been resolved if the BJP had not lost the 2004 Lok Sabha elections. “It shows that there is a solution of Kashmir and both countries were close to resolve it,” said Khan. Ruling out the possibility of any war with India, he said two nuclear armed countries would not fight because “there are always unintended consequences.”

lence must stop. “The main role of the state is to guarantee public order but we must fight against anything that endangers the unity of the nation,” he said, adding that any future demonstrations should be declared officially and carried out peacefully. The protest movement earlier broadened its demands to include Macron’s resignation and the dissolution of the French Parliament. Macron repeatedly vowed not to give in to street rule but was forced to reconsider after the worst violence in Paris in half a century. He accused his political opponents of hijacking the movement in order to block the reforms. Nearly 300,000 people took part in the first countrywide demonstration. There were more than 106,000 a week later and 136,000 people last Saturday. Macron had postponed a two-day visit to Serbia this week to deal with the crisis.

Italian ‘mafia kingpin’, 46 others arrested

It’s time for Pak to get on board with peace process in South Asia: US

Pa l e r m o, D e c 4 (IANS): The Italian police on Tuesday arrested an alleged leader of the notorious Sicilian mafia and 46 other people thought to be linked to the criminal gang on the island of Sicily. A massive police operation led to the arrest of 80-year-old Settimo Mineo, said to be the new leader of the Cosa Nostra -- the most prominent organized crime group on the island of Sicily -- as well as 46 suspected members of the mob, the police said in a statement cited by Efe news. Mineo was reportedly the head of the Pagliarelli district and considered the recently appointed kingpin of the entire organization. Reports say that Mineo, the owner of a jewellery shop in Palermo, became the Cosa Nostra boss after Salvatore Riina -- known as Totò and renowned for a bloody murder campaign in the 1990s which resulted in the assassination of prosecutors involved in an anti-mafia commission -- died last November.

Washington, Dec 4 (PTI): In a strong message to Pakistan, US Defence Secretary Jim Mattis has said it is time for “every responsible nation” to support the efforts of the UN, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and all those who are trying to maintain peace in South Asia. Pakistan must take on a substantive role in peace talks with the Taliban if the war in neighbouring Afghanistan is to be ended, he said. Mattis was responding to a question from reporters about a letter written by President Donald Trump to Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan, seeking his support in the peace process in Afghanistan. In his letter, Trump made it clear that Pakistan’s full support over the issue “is fundamental” to building an enduring US-Pakistan partnership. “We’re looking for every responsible nation to support peace in the sub-continent and across

CURE FROM CANCER OVARY WITH METASTASIS

My name is Ms. Nasenmangyang and I am from Tuensang in the state of Nagaland. Presently I am about 48 years of age. After suffering from abdominal discomfort for several years, I went for medical checkup in a reputed hospital at Dimapur on 14.01.15. During the course of investigation, I was diagnosed with Cancer Ovary with Metastasis. Consequently, I underwent operations on two occasions and I also completed the 1st Cycle of Chemo therapy. When I was advised to undergo operation for the third time, I refused and decided to return to Tuensang. Accordingly, I was taken from Dimapur to Tuensang by chopper. I was bedridden and in a serious condition. Sometime during the 3rd week of April, 2015, my family members approached one Dr. Somba Chang, Director of M/S Herbal Medicine & Tea Unit Pvt. Ltd., who stays in H/No. 101, Purana Bazaar East, Mount View Ward - 5, Dimapur and sought his advice for my treatment. Fortunately, Dr. Somba Chang had a medicine for my ailment and it was sent to me through a Bus Conductor with the advice to start using it in the month of April, 2015 itself and to continue using it till I feel better. Miraculously, after continuously using the medicine, by 12.06.15 I was able to walk from my residence at 3rd NAP, First Sector to Tuesang bazaar for shopping. When I heard that Dr. Somba Chang was in Tuensang during the last week of October, 2015, I personally went to meet him and told him that I am cured from Cancer. By that time, my hair, which had fallen off due to the Chemo Therapy, had grown back to normal. By the grace of God, despite the lapse of 3 years and 8 months, the cancer did not reoccur till today and I remain healthy and cured. I BELIEVE THAT I AM THE FIRST WOMAN IN THE WORLD WHO GOT CURED FROM CANCER OVARY WITH METASTASIS WITHIN 3 (THREE) MONTHS. That is the healing power of stem cell of mineral mixed with oil of Perilla Frutincens (Linn), which was discovered by Dr. Somba Chang.

Jim Mattis (File) this war in Afghanistan that’s gone on now for 40 years,” he told reporters at the Pentagon on Monday as he welcomed Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman for talks. “It’s time for everyone to get on board, support the United Nations; support Prime Minister Modi’s, (Afghan) President (Ashraf) Ghani and all those who are trying to maintain peace and make for a better world here,” Mattis said. “We are on that track. It is diplomatically led as it should be, and we’ll do our

best to protect the Afghan people,” he added. Since taking office, Trump has been very critical of Pakistan’s lax attitude towards combatting terrorism. Last month Trump said Pakistan does not do “a damn thing” for the US, alleging that Islamabad had helped al-Qaeda chief Osama bin Laden hide near its garrison city of Abbottabad. Ties between the US and Pakistan strained after Trump, while announcing his Afghanistan and South Asia policy in August last year, hit out at Pakistan for providing safe havens to “agents of chaos” that kill Americans in Afghanistan and warned Islamabad that it has “much to lose” by harbouring terrorists. In September, the Trump administration cancelled USD 300 million in military aid to Islamabad for not doing enough against terror groups like the Haqqani Network and the Taliban active on its soil.

or the first time in Dimapur, Artists’ Corner has been organised by the Department of Art and Culture in association with NEU Naga Art Foundation at Dimapur hotel Saramati premises which so far has found no takers sadly. According to the visitors dairy so far only six visitors have visited the venue which has greatly discouraged the artists participating in the exhibition. The event is also a part of the hornbill festival and has been scheduled from December 1 till December 10. Though the event features art exhibition cum sale, demonstration of painting and sculpture, painting competition, talk and interactive sessions etc, there has been very less participation from the public probably because people are unaware of the event there. Talking Nagaland Post, some of the artists present at the venue expressed dismay saying that there have been hardly any visitors coming to visit the exhibition and that they could not carry out their demonstration eventhough they were fully prepared for it.

The artists speculated that there may seem to be not much art lovers in Nagaland. “As an artist it is heartening but at the same time we are hopeful that next year it will be better since it is the first time this year,” one artist said. Talking about Art, artists said art should be eye appealing and not simply about the income as they use their creativity to highlight various themes and subjects. Artists representing Kohima said that the event was not well publicised or organized and that the demonstration event was held from December 1 to 4, but with no visitors they could not demonstrate. One of the organizing members of New Art Foundation mentioned that there are 23 participants at Dimapur Artists’ Corner which comprises of amateur, professional and students of sculptor, painting and artist. The event starts from 10 a.m. and goes on till 5 p.m. An art competition will be held on December 6, for people in the age group of 15 to 25 years. (Staff Reporter)

ua Lipa is the moststreamed female artiste in the UK so far this year, according to figures from both Spotify and Apple Music. Her song One Kiss, with Calvin Harris, was the second most-streamed track on both sites, after Drake’s God’s Plan. Lipa’s self-titled album was the third most-streamed record in the UK, and the fourth globally, on Spotify. The star, who won best female at this year’s Brits, has just been announced as Vogue’s January cover star. She is expected to pick up her first Grammy nominations when the 2019 shortlist is unveiled on Friday. Apple and Spotify are the two biggest streaming services, with more than 139 million subscribers between them. Their “best of 2018” charts show the dominance of hip-hop, with Drake, Post Malone and late rapper XXXTentacion all clocking up multiple entries. Drake was, unsurprisingly, the year’s moststreamed artist after his fifth album, Scorpion, shattered streaming records in June. He clocked up 8.2 billion streams on Spotify alone - Apple does not re-

The new trophy, which is cast in solid glass, was created after Sir David teamed up with Czech glassmaking and design company LASVIT. Sir David describes the trophy as “the manifestation of a great material forged Dua Lipa in fire and shaped into the body of a woman”. He exlease comparable data - plained: “The Brit Awards while the single God’s Plan was the most-played song in the UK and worldwide. In My Feelings, which sparked a hugely popular viral dance challenge, was in both Apple and Spotify’s Top 10 as well. The Canadian star couldn’t compete with The Greatest Showman, whose soundtrack was the moststreamed album on Apple Music. By contrast, the cast recording failed to make Spotify’s Top 10 - although the breakout hit This Is Me by Kelela, was the moststreamed song amongst listeners aged 35-44. Ed Sheeran, who was the biggest artist on streaming services last year, dropped to fifth place in 2018 - no mean feat, considering he didn’t release any new material. (BBC)

beauty?” “It was exciting to transfer those ideas to a smaller object,” he said. “Now, we have something that I really, really love; I’m very happy with it.” The latest statue comes after the 2018 offering was designed by Turner Prize winning sculptor Sir Anish Kapoor – who is responsible for iconic creations such as The Orbit in East London’s Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park. We have plans for all Indian batsmen: Marsh

Ad e l a i d e , D e c 4 (PTI): The talk is all about Virat Kohli right now but the Australian bowlers’ preparation for other Indian batsmen is as detailed and anyone who thinks otherwise is plain “silly”, all-rounder Mitchell Marsh said Tuesday. Gearing up for the four-match Test series that starts Thursday here, Marsh said his team’s bowlers have strategies in place and would be aiming for perfect execution when the action begins. “We all know Virat’s a great player. We’ll have our plans for him and hopefully we can execute them. But if people think we’re not prepared for the other batsmen in the Indian team, who are all very good players, then they’d be pretty silly,” said Marsh. Marsh said the new faces and inexperience in the Australian batting lineup should be seen as an opportunity, rather than a sign of weakness for the

hosts. “There’s obviously been a lot of talk about that and it’s been a big build up to this Test match but there’s a great feeling around this group...now it’s about going out there and hopefully putting it together as a batting unit. But we all feel really good at the moment,” he said. The Australian vicecaptain was also asked about the spin challenge that India poses and the fact that the visiting tweakers have never had a particularly good run in this country. “We know R Ashwin, Ravindra Jadejda and Kuldeep Yadav are all world-class spinners. History shows that Indian spinners haven’t had as much impact over here as they have in India. But they’re world-class bowlers and we’re very prepared for them. It will be a great contest,” he replied. Marsh is expected to return to the Australian middle-order despite a

London, Dec 4 (Agencies): Pep Guardiola insists he has no concerns over Leroy Sane’s contract talks at Manchester City and says they are “going well”. In October, the City manager confirmed the club had opened negotiations with the winger, who joined from Schalke for £37m in the summer of 2016, regarding a new deal. Guardiola said, “The last information I had is that it’s going well. I don’t have any info from the club, saying we are in trouble [regarding Sane’s talks].” “The process [takes time], you saw with Raheem Sterling, it does not take one day, except Kevin De Bruyne, I think it was done in one or two days, the other ones will sometimes take longer. He and brother Shaun Marsh will form the backbone of the home team’s middle-order and look to replicate their form from the Ashes last summer. “He’s my brother and my best mate. I look up to him in every single way... hopefully people respect him for the fact he’s never given up. He keeps coming back, keeps working hard. Hopefully he can keep proving a few people wrong. I just want him to have a great summer,” he said. The all-rounder said he is also fully fit to bowl and hopes to be a vital fifth cog in the Australian attack, comprising of three pacers and Nathan Lyon. “I have got some good overs under my belt the last couple of weeks for Western Australia. My goal for this summer is to start chipping in with the ball and get a few more wickets for the team. I love coming on in the graveyard shift, 70 to 80 overs when the ball’s doing nothing and trying to sneak in a wicket. I really want to take my bowling to the next level in this team,” he said. “I think number six is a great position to bat especially if you’ve bowled a few overs. I’m doing my best to make the number six position my own in this team, so that’s all I can do,” he added.

Man City could face European ban L o nd o n , D e c 4 (Agencies): Manchester City face being banned from European competition if they are found guilty of breaking UEFA’s Financial Fair Play rules. Football Leaks claimed last month that City had inflated their sponsorship income in order to comply with UEFA’s break-even rules. In 2014, City settled their FFP case with UEFA and accepted a £49m fine. Three weeks ago, UEFA announced it would re-open cases if new information came to light. On Sunday in Dublin, UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin confirmed he was prepared to take action if rules had been broken.

Icardi named Serie A Footballer of the Year

Hornbill Off Road Challenge held

Milan, Dec 4 (Agencies): Mauro Icardi and Massimiliano Allegri were rewarded for their Serie A efforts with the Footballer and Coach of the Year awards. Inter star Mauro Icardi has become the first nonJuventus player to win Serie A Footballer of the Year since Zlatan Ibrahimovic in 2011, while Massimiliano Allegri scooped the coach’s prize for a fourth time. Icardi finished joint top-scorer in Serie A last term alongside Ciro Immobile on 29 goals and helped get Inter back into the Champions League. The Argentina international has carried that form into the current campaign as well, having netted eight times in 11 outings. Juventus’ title success helped Allegri reclaim the prize for the best coach, with Maurizio Sarri – whose Napoli side were just pipped to Serie A success by the Old Lady last term – winning it in 2017. Allegri already has himself in with a strong chance of taking the award for a fifth time next year, as Juve are eight points clear at the top of the table after 14 matches, and the coach paid tribute to his squad.

ing Angami Sports’ Association (ASA), Chakhesang Wrestling Association (CWA), Zeliang Wrestling Association (ZWA) participated in the championship. Paris, Dec 4 (Agencies): Luka Modric ended the long reign of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo by winning the Ballon d’Or for the first time on Monday, while another first saw Norwegian forward Ada Hegerberg win the inaugural women’s trophy. Messi and Ronaldo had won every Ballon d’Or since 2008, and usually fought only each other for the greatest recognition among soccer’s elite. Women’s fight for recognition on the biggest stage took a big step with Hegerberg’s award. Modric won the Champions League with Real Madrid and then guided Croatia to the World Cup final in July. The midfielder was voted player of the tournament. “As a kid we all have dreams. My dream was to play for a big club and win important trophies,” Modric said. “The Ballon d’Or was more than just a dream for me and it is really an honor and a privilege to hold this trophy.” Ronaldo was second in the polling followed by France forward Antoine Griezmann. France’s teen star, Kylian Mbappe, was fourth. Messi was fifth in the voting, having been runnerup to Ronaldo the past two years and in the top three every year since 2007. Modric had never previously been in the top three. “2018 is a dream year for me,” the 33-year-old Modric said. “Throughout

Real Madrid and Croatia midfielder Luka Modric claimed the Ballon d’Or after a brilliant year.

my career I realized hard work, persistence and belief in yourself in difficult moments are the foundations of success.” Ronaldo missed out on a record sixth award, which would have moved him one ahead of Messi. The last player to win it before those two started dominating world soccer awards was Brazil midfielder Kaka with AC Milan in 2007. Ronaldo also won the Champions League last season with Modric, before leaving to join Juventus but he failed to make an impression when Portugal lost to Uruguay in the round of 16. Mbappe and Griezmann scored in the 4-2 World Cup final win against Croatia. Mbappe earned a domestic treble with Paris Saint-Germain. Griezmann also scored twice for Atlet-

ico Madrid in the Europa League final win against Marseille. The 19-year-old Mbappe, the youngest player since Pelé to score in a World Cup final, won the Raymond Kopa Trophy awarded to the best young player. France Football magazine has been awarding the Ballon d’Or since 1956, and created a women’s award for the first time this year. Hegerberg is a threetime Women’s Champions League winner with French side Lyon and scored a tournament-record 15 times last season. “I want to say thanks to France Football. It’s a huge step for women’s football,” Hegerberg said. “I want to end this speech with a message to all young girls in the world. Believe in yourselves.”

Ugandan midfielder failed to get a shot away in time but the loose ball fell kindly for Sahal whose first-time effort was denied by the crossbar. Both sides went close after the half-hour mark. Malsawmzuala picked Zakeer’s pocked and released

Jerry into space inside the box. The nimble-footed winger had just the keeper to beat but Dheeraj saved with the tip of his leg. Jamshedpur struggled to carve out clear openings even after the break and Blasters kept ringing the alarm bells at the other end.

The visitors took the lead through a spot kick. Tim Cahill was brought down by Dheeraj Singh outside the box but the referee pointed to the spot. Calvo stepped up and converted from 12 yards. Blasters’ response was immediate. The home side picked up their pace and intensity and their efforts bore fruit in the 77th minute. Sahal headed Zakeer’s corner into the box for Stojanovic who flicked it across the face of goal. Tiri and Bikash Jairu failed to deal with it and Doungel pounced, pulling the hosts level. The match became an end-toend affair towards the end but a match-winning goal remained elusive.
