Patton, minister of state for MoRTH Gen (retd) VK Singh, MPs, MLAs, senior officers from Centre and the State were present on the occasion. For development and improvement of NH, he said 55 works (total length 1,063.41 km) worth Rs 11,711 crore have been approved in the last six years, which included about 48 km of three concrete road projects as part of improvement of Dimapur at a total cost of about Rs 1,598 crore.

He announced that Rs 45 crore was being released for Nagaland soon, while pointing out that the State’s BoS ratio was 11.5% today, which is very high. Requesting the chief minister to urgently send

the estimates for land and damage compensation in respect of Kohima bypass, he said National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL) has taken up two-laning of Kohima-Mao road in Nagaland, whose civil work has already been awarded on September 30 this year. The appointed date has been declared as October 20 and the contractor has mobilised on site. Stating that the estimate for damage compensation was awaited, he urged the State Government to expedite the matter so that civil work could be started at the earliest. On his part, Rio urged the Central minister to consider development of foothill roads in the State, to which Gadkari said this was under consideration. (Cont’d on p-8)

COVID vaccine likely in few weeks: PM NEW DELHI, DEC 4 (PTI): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday said that experts believe that the wait for a COVID-19 vaccine will not be long and it may be ready in a few weeks, saying vaccination drive in India will begin as soon as scientists give the nod. In his remarks here at an all-party meeting held virtually, Modi said healthcare workers involved in treating COVID-19 patients, frontline workers, who include police personnel and municipal staff, and old people suffering from serious conditions would be inoculated on priority. Noting that there have been questions about the price of COVID-19 vaccine, Modi said it is natural

to have such queries and asserted that public health will be accorded top priority in the matter and states will be fully involved. In his concluding address at the meeting, Modi sought to address most burning aspects of the issue, ranging from India’s vaccine readiness to its pricing, and reiterated that the country has done better than even some developed countries and those with better health infrastructure in tackling the pandemic. This is the second allparty meeting called by the government to discuss COVID-19 situation since the outbreak of the pandemic. Modi said nearly eight vaccine candidates are at different stages of trial with

their manufacturing assured in India and added that three from India are also at different stages of trial. Speaking about his interaction with Indian scientists involved in developing the vaccine and his visit to Pune, Ahmedabad and Hyderabad facilities, Modi said they are very confident of success. Their confidence level is very strong, he said, adding that various vaccines from different countries may be being spoken about but the world is keeping a watch on having a vaccine which is cheap and also safest. That is why, he said, it is natural that the world is looking at India, a global centre for mass manufacturing of different vaccines at a very affordable cost.

ENSF temporarily suspends agitation DIMAPUR, DEC 4 (NPN): Eastern Naga Students’ Federation (ENSF) has announced temporary suspension of its indefinite democratic protest due to emergency presidential meeting of six federating units scheduled to be held at ENSF headquarters, Tuensang. ENSF president Sepili L Sangtam and asst. general secretary Khomo P directed– Confederation of Chang Students’ Union, Khaimniungan Students’ Union, Konyak Students’ Union, Phom Students’ Conference, United Sangtam Students’ Conference and Yimchunger Akheru Arih-Ako– to reach Tuensang by Saturday, including all advisers and former leaders of ENSF. It, however, warned that the proposed agitation would resume anytime as and when decided. ENSF also regretted that in spite of its agitation having entered fifth day, the government was giving a cold shoulder to its demands, which only showed how little concern it had for Eastern Nagas, deprived of their rights. Meanwhile, the third phase of agitation passed off peacefully with volunteers of having locked district administration offices in all five districts besides restricting movement of government vehicles.

NBCC, ABAM oppose Sunday shopping DIMAPUR, DEC 4 (NPN): Two major church organisations-- Nagaland Baptist Church Council (NBCC) and Ao Baptist Arogo Mungdang (ABAM)- have reiterated their stand against Sunday shopping as it went contrary to the Biblical teaching. NBCC general secretary Rev. Dr. Z. Keyho pointed out that encouraging people to do business on Sunday (the day of worship) was against Christian principles and that Christmas was not about shopping and entertainment but about worship and being thankful to God for what He has done for us through the birth of His Son. He said people have six days to do business but to urge shops and business establishments to stay open on Sunday “ do not go well with the Christian spirit of celebrating Christmas.”

No business on Sunday, reiterates ABAM

The apex church body of Ao Baptist Christians, Ao Baptist Church Association (ABAM) has reiterated its call for keeping all shops and business establishments of the State closed on Sunday. ABAM president Dr I Lolen Imchen and executive secretary Rev Dr Mar Atsongchanger in a press release stated that though it was not clearly written as a law, Sunday is considered as holiday by most people of the world. ABAM said it has been observed and considered as the day of rest by both Christians and non-Christians. ABAM stressed that taking one day rest in a week was accepted as a human culture and that through the teachings of Christian religion , Sunday became more important and necessary that gave new meaning for its observance. It said among the many activities conducted in present world were contrary to true observance of Sunday where opening of shops and markets on Sunday have made Christians go for shopping on the day. ABAM regretted that though the church and different organisations attempted to impress on observance of Sunday in accordance with the teachings of Bible, it could not bring the desired change since people were self-centred, selfish and think only of self-gain. ABAM asserted that Sunday observance was important not only for the church and believers but for all citizens of Nagaland because 100% (Full text on p-6) of them are Christians. (Cont’d on p-8)

NPP Mokokchung unit alleges harassment on senior pensioners

DIMAPUR: National People’s Party (NPP) Mokokchung district has expressed disappointment on the alleged “harassment” to the senior citizen pensioners by the officials of government and State Bank of India (SBI). In a press statement, NPP Mokokchung unit claimed that old and frail pensioners queued outside the Treasury Offices and various branches of SBI to collect or submit their life certificates as government has made it mandatory to procure and submit a life certificate every year in order to receive their pensions. The party therefore, questioned the government and SBI, how they expected every citizen to appear before the treasure or bank

officials when many of them were suffering from old age ailments and bedridden. Instead, it asked the officials including bank employees to show concern towards the old pensioners, who live in the far flung and rural areas. It also asked the officials not to harass them to appear in person during this pandemic as old people were most vulnerable to corona virus. NPP said it acknowledged the government of India initiative in opening an online application and submission of life certificates, but wondered how the poor and helpless senior citizens who did not even know how to operate a simple key pad mobile phone, could make use of the online platform. In the light of the above,

the NPP unit suggested the government to come up with a plan to take the services of pension to the old people, where SBI can start door-to door service or set up customer service point in all the villages or depute bank employees in reaching out to the old pensioners. Another alternative, according to NPP was to entrust the local authorities including the Village Councils, GBs, pastors, etc. to take the onus and responsibility of certifying the life certificates by physically verifying the old age people in their own respective villages or colonies. By doing so, the SBI and government can bring changes and provide respite to the senior citizens, NPP said.

KOHIMA, DEC 4 (NPN): Minister of Rural Development, Metsubo Jamir said people should give due importance to development especially in the state capital since shortage of space was becoming one of the biggest hurdles for future developmental activities. He said this while addressing a gathering after inaugurating Sokhriezie Park below Nagaland Police Headquarters, here, Friday. Voicing concerns for the need to beautify the

state capital to attract more visitors, especially tourists, Metsubo lauded the efforts put into the construction of the park and also expressed happiness at how well it had turned out since initial work for the project begun 10 years back when he was the director, department of Rural Development. He said it was not too late to beautify Kohima and can make it one of the most beautiful cities in the state by carrying out more of such beautification projects especially with better and wider roads. He encouraged the

people of the capital to be more open-minded and generous when there were road construction projects since that was the most vital ingredient for a city to progress. The minister said, “People expect development to take place overnight but it doesn’t happen that way. It is a gradual process and we as concerned citizens should be farsighted and leave enough space for development and at the same time leave room for our future generations

to also be able to express themselves through various developmental activities.” He called on the gathering to be forerunners leading the way while helping the younger generations to follow and that mental development and infrastructural development should go alongside each other. CoMSO submits memo to M’laya gov

Correspondent

SHILLONG, DEC 4: The Confederation of Meghalaya Social Organizations (CoMSO) on Friday submitted a memorandum to Governor Satya Pal Malik demanding implementation of the Inner Line Permit (ILP) and to give his assent to the Meghalaya Residents Safety and Security Act (Amendment) Bill 2020. In its memorandum, CoMSO stated that the indigenous people of the State are a minority in the context of the national population and thus it needs special protection just like the indigenous people of Mizoram, Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh and Manipur. “The four North Eastern states have put in place laws and mechanisms to contain unregulated entry of people into their States by implementing the Inner Line Permit (ILP) System, which is an offshoot of the Bengal Eastern Frontier Regulation Act 1873,” CoMSO said. Furthermore, CoMSO also drew the attention of the Governor to the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly

File photo of protest by CoMSO unanimously adopting a resolution in 2019 urging the government of India to implement ILP in the State under the Bengal Eastern Frontier Regulation Act 1873. “However, our State, which has been demanding ILP for a very long time, has been denied this law and mechanism by the Central Government,” the memorandum added. Moreover, CoMSO also said that the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly in March this year adopted the Meghalaya Residents Safety and Security (Amendment) Bill, 2020 and forwarded the same to the office of the Governor seeking assent to

the Bill. “The objective of the Bill is to ensure enhanced security, vetting of tenants and ensure the safety and security of citizens of the State by preventing anti-social elements from gaining shelter in the State which might be detrimental to peace and tranquility to maintain public order and peace,” the memorandum said. CoMSO said that this Bill “is lying with your office for your kind consideration.” CoMSO said the Bill will go a long way towards the protection of the indigenous people of the State. SHILLONG, DEC 4: Agitating employees of the Meghalaya Energy Corporation Limited (MeECL) under the banner of the Coordination Committee of Registered MeECL (Employees) Associations and Unions (CCORMAU) have decided not to go ahead with their proposed power shutdown but has decided to mount pressure on the government with other forms of agitations to clear their pending salaries. CCORMAU vice president, Arju Dkhar said that they have decided not to shut down power supply and harass the consumers. The employees had threatened to go on a “total shut down” in the State if the government do not clear their pending salaries are not cleared by December 5. “We have decided not to harass the power consumers of the state by shutting down power. We would restore to other forms of agitation to pressurise the government to release our salaries,” Dkhar said. Over 3000 MECL employees are yet to receive

People’s Party of Arunachal suspends its lone MLA I tanaga r , D ec 4 (PTI): The People’s Party of Arunachal (PPA) has suspended its lone MLA, Kardo Nyigyor, for alleged anti-party activities. Nyigyor represents the Likabali constituency in the Lower Siang district. PPA president Kahfa Bengia said on Thursday that the decision to suspend Nyigyor was taken after receiving proof of his indulgence in anti-party activities. “The PPA has suffered enough through various defections from time to time, and this time it is in no mood to suffer the same. The party is left with no other alternative but to place him under suspension with immediate effect,” Bengia said. The PPA, despite being the lone regional party in the state, has been the victim of political defections for many years and the drastic step has been taken to curtail defections and to bolster a strong opposition bench, he said. “It is high time that the younger generation, especially the educated youths, realise the importance of having a strong regional political party in the state,” he added.

their October and November salaries. “A general meeting would be held on December 11 which will be attended by employees from different districts of the State and in that meeting the employees would decide what course of action they would take,” Dkhar said. “Perhaps we would stop work in the offices if our salaries are not release. But at the same time, we would ensure power generation and distribution works are not stopped,” he said. MeECL is reeling under financial pressure for the past decade. On several occasions, the state government has been coming to its assistance by providing loan. On Thursday, Meghalaya Power Minister James Sangma said that the government is in constant touch with the MeECL to find ways and means to resolve the long pending salaries of the employees. “This is a problem which requires a long-term and short-term solution and not only for these two months (October and November),” Sangma said.

Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal on Thursday held a discussion with Union Ports, Shipping and Waterways Minister Mansukh L Mandaviya with an aim to improve water transport in Brahmaputra and Barak rivers for better trade and commerce. During the discussion, Mandaviya shared a detailed framework of a nearly Rs 3,000-crore project for boosting navigability, transport, trade and commerce of the rivers Brahmaputra and Barak, which are the National Waterways-2 and 16, respectively. Sonowal stressed on the need for restrengthening the existing transport facilities and utilising the optimum potential of the Brahmaputra and Barak, an official release said. “The rivers served as the lifeline of trade and commerce as well as connectivity during the British period and provided connectivity with neighbouring countries,” he said. Mandaviya said that the project will encompass all critical areas like development of multi-modal logistic hubs with last-mile connectivity, passenger and cargo terminals and construction of new jetties, among others.

Robertjune Kharjahrin told reporters that the Governor has assured the CoMSO delegation that he is ready to take up the issue with the Central government for implementation of ILP in the State. “The Governor told us that ILP is a subject matter of the Central Government and the President and so he can’t comment much on it, however he respects the decision of the Legislative Assembly and is willing to accompany the CM to Delhi if invited to pursue the matter,” Kharjahrin told reporters after submitting the memorandum to the Governor. The CoMSO chairman said that the Governor have also assured the delegation that he will talk with the Union Home Ministry to give a green signal so that he gives assent to the Meghalaya Residents Safety and Security (Amendment) Bill, 2020. Recently, CoMSO has also written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah seeking their intervention in the implementation of the British-era ILP in Meghalaya.

Of the fresh cases, eight were reported from Lower Subansiri, five from Changlang, four from West Kameng and three from the Capital Complex region, he said. Two cases each were also recorded in Shi-Yomi and Namsai, while one case each was detected in Tirap, Lohit, Lower Siang and Lepa Rada, the official said. Twenty-seven infections were detected through rapid antigen tests, while the other was diagnosed through RTPCR test, he said. The state now has 769 active cases, while 15,525 people have been cured and 54 patients have succumbed to the infection, the official said.

Elected members raise objection to superseding ADCs in Manipur Correspondent IMPHAL, Dec 4: Elected members of the recently superseded six Autonomous District Councils (ADCs) in Manipur on Friday registered a strong objection to the handing over of functioning of the councils to deputy commissioners. While superseding the ADCs, the Manipur government, in its order appointed deputy commissioners of each district to exercise all powers and duties conferred and imposed upon the ADCs under Manipur (Hill Areas) District Council Act, 1971 or any other law for the time being enforced. “We have no objection when the state government superseding the six ADCs. But we are against the handing over the administration to the DCs,” said coordinator of Chairmen Forum of ADC Manipur Dr Yaranso Ngalhung. Addressing a press conference here in Imphal, the chairman of superseded Ukhrul ADC said

People of the hill district will consider they are neglected if government delay in holding the elections, he said. The Manipur government superseded the six ADCs covering the entire 10 hill districts by an order issued on November 30 last amid the demand for holding the due elections to the ADCs without any delay raised by All Tribal Students’ Union Manipur (ATSUM). While demanding holding the elections without any delay, ATSUM had recently threatened to launch its deferred agitations. The apex body of tribal based student bodies alleged that even as the state government had agreed to hold the due elections without delay, no step to hold the same was taken up till date. While pressing the government to conduct the elections, ATSUM has been threatening imposing inter-state bandh and complete ban on the implementation of national projects in the hill districts.

62.32 pc votes polled in Mizoram’s Lai 33 new cases push Tripura’s Autonomous District Council elections COVID-19 tally to 32,836

AIZAWL, DEC 4 (PTI): An estimated 62.32 per cent of 51,456 voters exercised their franchise in the elections to the 25-member Lai Autonomous District Council (LADC) in south Mizoram’s Lawngtlai district on Friday, an election official said. Polling began at 7 am and concluded peacefully at 4 pm, she said. No untoward incident was reported in any of the 111 polling booths, Mizoram State Election Commission Secretary Teresy Vanlalhruaii said. The final polling percentage could increase as detailed reports are awaited, the official said. Social distancing and other COVID-19 protocols were strictly maintained during the polling, she said. A total of 72 candi-

dates are in the fray for the elections, which is expected to be a direct contest between the ruling Mizo National Front (MNF) and its NDA partner BJP, with which it does not have an alliance in the state. The MNF has fielded candidates in all the seats, while the BJP has fielded nominees in 17 seats. The Congress contested in 14 seats and 16 independent candidates are in the fray. The counting of votes will take place on December 8. In the previous council elections held in 2015, the Congress had crossed the majority mark with 16 seats, followed by the MNF which had bagged eight seats and one independent candidate was elected.

At present, however, the MNF has the highest number of members in the council at 11, followed by the BJP with nine, while the grand old party’s tally has diminished to five, mainly due to defections. Both the MNF and the BJP have exuded confidence of winning the elections. During an election campaign on November 26, senior BJP leader and Union minister Kiren Rijiju had promised that the Centre will make efforts to amend the sixth schedule to give more powers to the three ADCs in Mizoram and ensure directing funding from the Union government. Three ADCs for Lai, Chakma and Mara communities were created in the southern parts of the state in 1972.

that traditionally, chairman used to act as caretaker after the term of the ADC expired and pending the elections. The BJP-led coalition government had not followed this traditional and constitutional practice and handed over the charge to DCs by superseding the ADCs, he alleged. If the government order ADC chairmen to act as caretakers, it would be in the interest of the tribal people, he said. During the press conference, chairmen and members also joined the chorus demanding conduct of the elections to the ADCs without any delay. The gover nment should conduct the elections to the ADCs at the earliest, the coordinator demanded. If the state government delays holding the elections citing COVID-19 pandemic, it will cheat the tribal people as the state government was preparing to hold the elections to the Imphal Municipal Corporation (IMC) in January 2021, he alleged.

The name “Mokokchung” was coined by our ancestors when the village was formed. Thus, the district headquarter was setup in 1889 at Mokokchung village land which eventually came into existence as Mokokchung District. The origin of the name “Mokokchung” and the formation of the Mokokchung district have been documented in the Gazetteer of India, Mokokchung District, 1979. However, there was a time in history, when J.P. Mills entered Mokokchung as a Sub-Divisional Officer in the year 1917 and published the book, ‘The Ao Nagas’ (1926). At that time when he was writing his book, the people whom he consulted, intentionally gave the name “Mokongtsü”, thereby distorting its original name. However, when P.F. Adams was the SDO, Mokokchung (1939-1944), the village approached him insisting to use its original name ‘Mokokchung’ only, thus upon his deliberation regarding the issue of distortion of the village name and having obtained clear evidence of the right nomenclature, the original name ‘Mokokchung’ was reestablished. Based on this, due correction was made in the Preface Note to the 2nd edition of J.P. Mills ‘The Ao Nagas’ (1973). It should be noted that even before J.P. Mills wrote his book ‘The Ao Nagas’, there are many writers before him who had correctly mentioned the original name “Mokokchung” in the following books/manuscripts/reports given below:1. General Report at the Topographical Survey, 1875-76. Pp. 59-60. (NAGAS IN THE NINETEENTH CENTURY, V. Elwin). Pg-270 2. Davis, A.W. in CENSUS OF INDIA. 1891. Assam. Vol. I. Pp. 241-243. (NAGAS IN THE NINETEENTH CENTURY). Pg-322 3. Woodthorpe, Lt. R.G. “Report of the Survey Operations in the Naga Hills.” The Nagas, Hill Peoples of Northeast India. The Naga Database. 1875-76. 4. GAZETTEER of BENGAL & NORTH-EAST INDIA. B. C. Allen, District Gazetteer of the Naga Hills (1905). Pg. 480. 5. Balfour, Henry. Diary of a Tour in the Naga Hills, (Manuscript) 1922-23. 6. Hutton, J.H. Pg. 54 These writings prove that ‘Mokokchung’ is the original name of the village and that the village had the name ‘Mokokchung’ since its formation. Henceforth, whoever uses the word other than ‘Mokokchung’ shall attract legal course of action. On behalf of council L. Mapu Longkumer (Tatar) J. Temjen Kichu (Tatar)

Reacting to the results, NCP supremo Sharad Pawar said, “The results are a clear reflection of the MVA’s work in the last one year.” The MVA government led by Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray assumed office on November 28 last year. BJP leader Devendra Fadnavis said his party failed to gauge the combined strength of the

MVA. Another BJP leader Sudhir Mungantiwar said, “We will introspect over the setbacks that the party received in these polls. I think we were caught unawares in this election.” The Maharashtra Legislative Council has total 78 seats, of which 12 are filled from the Governor’s quota and are currently vacant. The MVA has submitted a list of 12 names to Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari. The only solace for the BJP was that its candidate Amrish Patel won the by-election to Dhule Nandurbar Local Bodies constituency. Patel had resigned after quitting the Congress and joining the BJP, necessitating the byelection. In the upper house, the BJP at present has 22 members, Shiv Sena 14, NCP nine, Congress eight, RSP, PWP and Lok Bharati party one each, and four are independent legislators. There were 18 vacancies 12 from governor’s quota, five from teachers’ and graduates’ quota and one from local bodies.

Mumbai, Dec 4 (PTI): The one-year-old Shiv Sena-NCP- Congress government in Maharashtra got a shot in the arm on Friday as the ruling coalition won four of the five Legislative Council seats from the Graduates’ and Teachers’ quota. In a setback for the BJP, which lost power in the state after Assembly elections last year, its candidate also lost in Nagpur, a bastion of the saffron party. The biennial elections to the upper house, held on December 1, were a sort of litmus test for the unlikely `Maha Vikas Aghadi’ (MVA) of the Shiv Sena and Congress-NCP which came to power after the Sena parted ways with the BJP. The term of five sitting members had ended in July this year but the election was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Govt’s ‘mixopathy’ science

O

n November 19, the Central Council of Indian Medicine (CCIM) issued a notification allowing Ayurveda surgery students who had completed their post-graduation to perform certain surgical procedures. The list includes 58 types of general, dental, ENT and ophthalmological procedures. Reacting to the notification, the Indian Medical Association (IMA) said this was “corrupting modern medicine by mixing with other systems and poaching the disciplines of modern medicine through the back door”. IMA maintained that the CCIM notification was “foul play of the first order” and demanded that the notification be withdrawn immediately. Allopathic doctors also said that the CCIM notification to allow the legal practice of surgeries by Ayurveda practitioners and the formation of four committees by NITI Aayog for the integration of all systems of medicine will only lead to “mixopathy”. The IMA has therefore, demanded an immediate withdrawal of both. As a course of action, the IMA has gave a call to all doctors practicing modern medicine to withdraw non-essential and non-COVID services on December 11, 2020 from 6 AM to 6 PM, in protest against the CCMI notification. However, IMA said emergency services will function along with ICUs and CCUs but no elective surgical case will be posted. The allopathic doctors are clearly unhappy that a branch based on the ancient medicinal practices that has no link with modern medicines is intruding into its domain. The allopathic doctors maintain that Ayurvedic doctors have no idea of anatomy or surgery. They likened the notification to asking a car driver to fly an aircraft. However, ayurvedic doctors pointed out that there is a branch of Ayurveda called Shalya, which means surgery. They say this is part of Ayurveda curriculum and is taught across the country. The ayurvedic doctors also said their branch is as per the existing legal regime since Ayurveda also teaches surgery to students. Therefore, they ask, “is it fair to say they can’t practise it?” Satya Dornala, a specialist in Panch-Karma detoxifying therapy at the Delhi-based Swami Vivekananda Ayurvedic Panchkarma Hospital, says the notification sets a worrying precedent, in that it “takes the arc of modern medicine under the banner of Ayurveda”. There have been, he notes, instances of Ayurvedic doctors prescribing modern medicines postsurgery even in states where it is not allowed. One of the potent arguments is that Ayurveda practitioners should not prescribe allopathic medicines since they have not studied modern pharmacology. Further, allopathic doctors say that surgery is not just about science but a method that continues to evolve with new discovery. Even allopathic surgeons have to keep up with latest techniques and technologies by attending workshops. They say that training given to ayurvedic doctors is limited to minor surgery and hence Ayurvedic practitioners are not equipped to perform major or complicated surgeries. Besides, they said all the pre and post surgical procedures involved prescriptions of allopathic drugs; which ayurvedic doctors are not knowledgeable about. To put it under the perspective of allopathic surgeons, they say that if ayurvedic doctors are allowed to perform surgery then even physiotherapists would be deemed to be capable of doing so. The conflict of interests between the ayurvedic and allopathic doctors has certainly come at a time when a national crisis exists due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Perhaps, in its desire to be seen as promoting everything Indian, the central government may have overlooked basic facts instead of leaving it to the judgement of patients as in other countries having similar branches of medicine.

DailyDevotion The Law of Opposition

To him who overcomes… —Revelation 2:7

Life without war is impossible in the natural or the supernatural realm. It is a fact that there is a continuing struggle in the physical, mental, moral, and spiritual areas of life. Health is the balance between the physical parts of my body and all the things and forces surrounding me. To maintain good health I must have sufficient internal strength to fight off the things that are external. Everything outside my physical life is designed to cause my death. The very elements that sustain me while I am alive work to decay and disintegrate my body once it is dead. If I have enough inner strength to fight, I help to produce the balance needed for health. The same is true of the mental life. If I want to maintain a strong and active mental life, I have to fight. This struggle produces the mental balance called thought. Morally it is the same. Anything that does not strengthen me morally is the enemy of virtue within me. Whether I overcome, thereby producing virtue, depends on the level of moral excellence in my life. But we must fight to be moral. Morality does not happen by accident; moral virtue is acquired. And spiritually it is also the same. Jesus said, “In the world you will have tribulation…” (John 16:33). This means that anything which is not spiritual leads to my downfall. Jesus went on to say, “…but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.” I must learn to fight against and overcome the things that come against me, and in that way produce the balance of holiness. Then it becomes a delight to meet opposition. Holiness is the balance between my nature and the law of God as expressed in Jesus Christ.

Post-mortem

Together We Can Through Volunteering W

e have experienced the pandemic this year and it has directly or indirectly affected all of us. The fight is not over and we have to keep fighting in near future till there is a solid solution like an effective vaccine. Health care workers and all other frontline workers have contributed very positively at the time of pandemic. There are people who are paid and there are also people who are unpaid but contributed in the fight against coronavirus or COVID 19. There are many volunteers who have been at the forefront of medical, community and societal responses. Headlines in the world’s media have paid credit to volunteers for all kinds of work, from helping to provide medical care, to doing shopping for vulnerable neighbours, or checking up on elderly people living alone.

5th December is the International Volunteer Day

There are many occasion where volunteers are engaged and during pandemic or any other emergencies or big events we have seen the importance of volunteers. Volunteerism is one of the most vital delivery mechanisms for social, environmental and economic transformation, ensuring a lasting impact with its ability to change people’s mindsets, attitudes and behaviours. People become actors of change and equal partners in the attainment of local, national and international progress towards sustainable human development and global peace. We can see volunteers everywhere and one of the leading names in this regard is United Nations Volunteers or UNV in short. In 2019, there were 8,282 UN Volunteers, who served in 54 United Nations missions, agencies, funds and pro-

grammes across the globe. 13,186 online volunteers served virtually worldwide with 33 United Nations partners in support of 183 civil society organizations working on peace and development. 29 % of UN Volunteers on-site were under the age of 29, and 51 % were women. It is a moment of pride for many who can serve as UN volunteers. Recognising the importance of volunteering a day is specially focused for the volunteers which is observed around the world. International Volunteer Day (IVD) mandated by the UN General Assembly, is held each year on 5 December. It is viewed as a unique chance for volunteers and organizations to celebrate their efforts, to share their values, and to promote their work among their communities, non-governmental organizations (NGOs),

NBCC responds to press release by CAO, UT NSCN (I-M)

N

BCC has come out strong against the press release given by the CAO, UT NSCN (I-M) informing “all the stores/shops and business establishments to keep their stores/shops open on all Sundays in Dimapur until further notice.” The world is going through a difficult time because of the pandemic and it has affected our normal functioning for the last nine months. We were much concern about the further spread of the virus in the community and for that reason, our schools were closed down and congregational worships were suspended to protect the community. In this “new normal era,” we are supposed to be following the SOPs strictly and yet, we see that we have become very careless and indisciplined. Our streets are crowded and we see the increase of cases each day especially in Dimapur and Kohima. This is a concern that we must address rather than encouraging irresponsible behavior. If there is anything that we can do at this time, we must exhibit responsible behavior, mindful of oneself and the community. Instead of issuing strict measures, if we are to become relaxed in dealing with the situation we are facing in the name of Christmas, it goes against the true spirit of celebrating Christmas. It is against our Christian principle to encourage people to do business on the day of worship. Let us be mindful that Christmas is not about shopping and entertainment. It is about worship and to be thankful to God for what he has done for us through the birth of His son. We have six days to do our business and to urge shops/stores and business establishments to stay open on the day of worship do not go well with the Christian spirit of celebrating Christmas. Congregational worships may be suspended as it is now the case, but we do so because we want to be responsible in protecting the community. Churches conducting congregational worship are strictly following the SOPs bringing down the congregational gathering to 30% sitting capacity of the church. There

are churches that are not meeting because the community/congregation is going through a difficult time. Likewise other mass gatherings and functions of the church are discouraged. This act is not a lack of faith but an exhibition of being responsible for the community. As much as we believe that God is in control of the situation we also have our part to play in containing the spread of the virus in the community. In the era of social distancing, our streets are crowded and we are seeing more and more irresponsible behavior. At this juncture, we must remind ourselves that countries are going through the second wave and once again returning to lockdown. We mourn with the families who have lost their loved ones to the sickness and we pray for them. As we mourn, we are also thankful to God for listening to our prayer. We rejoice at the recovery rate in our state. But the fight is not over yet! We cannot take things for granted at this time. We must keep the faith and act responsibly. During this difficult time let us be prayerful and keep the faith.. Let us not make Christmas shopping the reason to keep our stops/stores open for business. Let us keep our Sundays sacred and let it be more meaningful. Let Sunday be a day of worship to honor God. Let us lighten and brighten our homes and celebrate this Christmas in a meaningful way and not make shopping and entertainment our focus. The NBCC urge the government of Nagaland and the district administrations to respect the sentiments of the church not only during this season but also throughout the year to keep our Sundays as a day of worship and not as a day of business. We impress upon the government to be strict in implementing the SOPs till the fight against the pandemic is won. May you all have a blessed Christmas and may Christ be born in each one of us. Like the magi and the shepherds, may we also take a meaningful journey to worship Christ, the savior of the world. Rev. Dr. Zelhou Keyho General Secretary, NBCC

Student life needs the right direction

W

hile Indian educational institutions have been revered as temples, the teachers who teach in these institutions have also been revered as Gurus. It is because of this recognition that the lamps of knowledge that were lit in these temples have been more reflective of human values than of bookish knowledge. These values acknowledge the key value discipline that directs student life in the right direction that is fully responsible for the holistic development of students (especially adolescents). The minus or disappearance of this value leads to an immediate increase in the number of good citizens, which in turn leads to an increase in inhumane practices. Due to this excess, sometimes our social balance is disturbed which leads to the development of the country lagging behind. Psychologists have described adolescence as a very dangerous time in life. At this point, many students often get lost in one way or another. During these wanderings, they look for a guide who can save them from

the whirlpool and bring them closer to their destination. For this closeness, there can be no one more reliable for them than the teacher. Because the student spends most of his life in the presence of his teacher. Thus the role of the school teacher (2) in maintaining balance (through discipline) in student life cannot be ignored. But a teacher can play this role properly only if he himself has some good and constructive values. The central axis of these values is considered to be school discipline. The student / teacher who goes back and forth from this axis is deprived of many higher and greater achievements. In this way the teacher has to teach his students a lesson of discipline as well as his own. The students have to move towards their destination. This increase is bound to turn into an achievement one day or another. Achievements made by their students are the real earnings of a teacher who is far more sceptical than money. United Nations agencies, government authorities and the private sector. The International Volunteer Day for Economic and Social Development was adopted by the United Nations General Assembly through Resolution A/RES/40/212 on 17 December 1985. Since then, governments, the UN system and civil society organizations have successfully joined volunteers around the world to celebrate the Day on 5 December. This year’s IVD campaign thanks volunteers worldwide and also sheds light on the difficulties and needs of volunteers during the pandemic. Showing the impact of volunteers in their communities during this crisis, we will reach to all corners of the globe with the message “Together We Can Through Volunteering.” “On International Volunteer Day, I appeal

to all governments to promote volunteering, support volunteer efforts and recognize volunteer contributions to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals. Volunteers deserve our heartfelt thanks”, said António Guterres, Secretary General of UN in his message on the occasion. Apart from observing the day, the United Nations General Assembly in its resolution 52/17 of 20 November 1997 proclaimed 2001 as the International Year of Volunteers (IYV). The year was conceived for the purpose of furthering the recognition of volunteers, facilitating their work, creating a network of communication and promoting the benefits of voluntary service. Young people or any other interested may come forward to become volunteers at different levels and

contribute positively. There is joy in helping others and it is easily possible through volunteering. We may not have enough resources to support social causes but we can give time and become volunteers with different humanitarian organisations and help people who need our care and support. There are many ways through which we can join many voluntary organisations working with the people and community for positive social transformation. Achieving the global goals or Sustainable Development Goals is not easy with the support of volunteers at different levels. Let us come forward and contribute for development by becoming volunteers wherever we can. Together we can bring a sustainable future for all of us. Ranjan K Baruah bkranjan@gmail.com

Nagas: Standing our ground

I

n the history of humankind, it is recorded that peoples struggle across the globe has so far been solved only through recognition of the rights and aspiration of the people to their nationhood and by nobly recognising their Nation. The make believe that IndoNaga peace settlement can be achieved with promise of material appeasement, packaged as developmental programmes, is but an utter lie and misconception. The length and breadth of the Naga homeland has been dissected and placed under arbitrary administrative units without the will or consent of the Nagas. The Indo-Naga Political conflict is perhaps the longest running political conflict in Asia. It stretches to over 7 decades of time line as of today marked by genocide inflicted on the Nagas by the armed forces of India and Myanmar. Across their homeland, the Nagas were assembled in groups for days together without food or water. Numerous children were born in such “concentration” areas. Our women were raped and our men tortured beyond human endurance and many were systematically tortured to death. The Naga people were subjected to unconceivable treatment not meted even to animals. Memories are still fresh when we recollect those unimaginable sufferings. We, the Naga people, went through great sufferings at the altars of gross human rights violations and military atrocities by the invading forces, compounded by deceits and betrayals from within. Nay, it is not only memories, but these elements still live and move around amongst the very people whom they helped devour. Mr. S. C. Jamir needs to realise that when he said that “the State of Nagaland was neither a gift nor manna falling from heaven. But it was purchased by the precious blood of the Naga people”, it is this same “blood” which he and the likes of him helped spilled and still abets in spilling. They are the ones that make the Indo-Naga political conflict prolong and thus extend the sufferings of the Naga public. Their actions largely contribute

and strengthen the denial of political freedom of the Naga people and their dignity. The present state of Nagaland (sic), which comprises of only 16, 579 Sq. Kms out of an approximate 120,000 Sq. kilometres is only a symbol of oppression, a convenient tool of suppression and discrimination, selfishness and utter disregard for fellow brothers and sisters and alienation of their own ancestors and future generations. Therefore, commemorating the so-called 58th Statehood Day like never before, at a time when the world is keenly watching for an honourable and acceptable political settlement, is nothing less than an insult to India’s very own claim to greatness. It is a slur to greatness of persons like Mahatma Gandhi, P. V. Narashima Rao, Atal Bihari Vajpayee and others. Time has revealed the futile efforts of the Governments of India and Myanmar through violent, repressive, suppressive and divisive methods to end the Naga peoples struggle for their political rights and freedom. The insincerity of the Government of India is proven and stands naked for the world to see. Not many days after entering into an agreement through signing of the Frame work Agreement with the Naga political Negotiators, the honourable Prime Minister of India, Mr. Narendra Modi, himself declared to the world in Dubai that “I am citing Nagaland because I want to tell people across the world, including the youth, that however complicated a problem might be, it can be solved through dialogue”. One wonders whether his people and government realise the fact that it takes more than just a document and a “continued ... look at each other through the prism of false perceptions and old prejudices” to bring about a just solution and shatter the misconstrued myth that Nagas are Indians and that their Nation is a part of India. Mr. Prime Minister who in his own word has been “deeply concerned about resolving the Naga issue” need to live up to his words without leaving it to a sinister person like his Nagaland state Governor, Mr

R.N. Ravi, who is undoing his efforts and is hell bent on demolishing the very fabric of the Naga society. Much against the expressed will of the people of India, it is apparent that the Government of India is still pursuing the colonial and imperialistic policy of dividing and suppressing the Naga people through instruments like Mr. R.N. Ravi in collusion with few Nagas. If the Framework Agreement “is a shining example of what we can achieve when we deal with each other in a spirit of equality and respect, trust and confidence; when we seek to understand concerns and try to address aspirations; when we leave the path of dispute and take the high road of dialogue... a lesson and an inspiration in our troubled world” as the honourable Prime Minister had declared at the signing of the Agreement, then, a sincere and immediate translation in action must ensue. Only then, Mr. Narendra Modi’s “deepest admiration for the great Naga people for their extraordinary efforts to the Peace efforts”, will become a reality. We, Nagas, as one people, have been standing our ground and have been steadfastly braving the challenges coming our way for the past many decades. We have our courage and commitment to achieve our political goal through just approaches. Our understanding of humanism informs us that we too must be recognised and respected as any other human group or nation. We cannot allow illinformed individuals or groups to hinder our progress to our rightful place. We must come together and help heal our spirit, a wound self-inflicted in addition to the wounds inflicted upon us by the invaders and occupational forces. Naga Peoples Movement for Human Rights, Kohima, the 4th of December 2020, Nagaland. Neingulo Krome, Secretary General, Naga Peoples Movement for Human Rights, Kohima, the 4th of december 2020.

Reader’s Post Sir,

Christmas Reminder

As Christmas approaches, as people gear themselves up to celebrate, as laughter and warmth fills every household, I would like to remind the citizens of how historic 2020 had been. COVID-19 started simple and modest yet it plunged the entire world in to a dark wormhole. Along with the death of millions, the world lost many great personalities- from Sushant Singh Rajput, Irrfan Khan and Rishi Kapoor to Diego Maradonna, Sean Connery, Chadwick Boseman and Ruth Bader Ginsburg etc. Not forgetting Assam’s very own Tarun Gogoi too. The year 2020 has been terrible to some and to a few; the pandemic has brought manifolds of blessings. Sir, I write this note not to spoil the festive mood of the people but instead as a reminder that we have not won the fight against corona, yet. Therefore, in the true Christmas spirit, with love in our hearts, let us all try to survive this pandemic. Pauzuyile Zeliang, Naga United Village

has confirmed 1.58 billion doses and the US, the worst affected country so far, that has managed to purchase just over a billion doses. As countries strategise to secure more shots to protect their populations against the novel coronavirus infection, Duke University has released a new global assessment of purchasing agreements for COVID-19 vaccines, even before any candidates are in the market. “Countries with manufacturing capacity, such as India and Brazil, have been successful in negotiating large advance market commitments with leading vaccine candidates as part of the manufacturing agreements,” the Duke researchers noted in their analysis. “The data is based on what is in the public domain and after speaking to gov-

ernment officials, especially in India,” explained noted virologist Shahid Jameel. In November, Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan said 400-500 million doses of COVID-19 vaccines were estimated to be made available for 250 to 300 million (25 crore to 30 crore) people in India by July-August 2021. Jameel told PTI that all the vaccines ‘pre-booked’ by India are manufactured by Indian companies – OxfordAstraZeneca and Novavax by Serum Institute of India (SII) in Pune and Sputnik V by Dr Reddy’s Lab in Hyderabad. India’s domestic vaccine candidate by Bharat Biotech also entered Phase 3 clinical trials this week. “Bharat Biotech and Zydus-Cadila would also add about 400 million doses annually. In brief, the

reach the point of ‘herd immunity’. The reliability of models being used for these estimations is far from clear, he stressed. “Since all the vaccine candidates that are being discussed as purchased have two-dose vaccine regimens, the current number for India would vaccinate, at best, 80 crore (800 million) people. This, of course, does not account for logistical losses, which can be substantial,” Rath, from the National Institute of Immunology (NII) in New Delhi, told PTI. “Also, this seems to imply that COVID-19 vaccination is a one-time exercise. But it is not clear how long the vaccine-mediated protection will last, and therefore it is not clear when repeat vaccination will be needed, and how that will be delivered,” he added. Flagging some uncertainties about the COVID dose purchases, Rath said he is “curious” about about the “confirmed” purchase by India. “Have these been paid for or at least committed to at a given price, are these acquisitions through the COVAX programme or independent of it, and most of all, of course, what is the delivery schedule agreed to in this acquisition, etc.”

New Delhi, Dec 4 (PTI): India is the largest buyer of COVID-19 vaccines in the world with 1.6 billion doses, according to a global analysis, a number some scientists say could cover 800 million people, or 60 per cent of its population, and will be enough to develop ‘herd immunity’. India has purchased 500 million doses of the Oxford University-AstraZeneca vaccine candidate, one billion from the US company Novavax and 100 million doses of the Sputnik V candidate from Russia’s Gamaleya Research Institute, according to the US-based Duke University Global Health Innovation Center. The ‘Launch and Scale Speedometer’ analysis, which is updated every two weeks, shows India has confirmed 1.6 billion doses of three vaccines as of November 30 while the US and the EU have purchased doses of six candidates. According to the analysis, India is the top COVID19 vaccine buyer followed by the European Union which

numbers appear reasonable over 2021 and 2022,” said Jameel, director of the Trivedi School of Biosciences, Ashoka University. “We can expect the first 250 million to be vaccinated in 2021; the remaining in the following years. The problem will not be vaccine doses, but the ability to deliver them,” Jameel explained. He noted that 1.6 billion doses would cover 800 million people or 60 per cent of India’s population. This, the virologist said, should be enough to develop herd immunity, a form of indirect protection from infectious disease that occurs when a sufficient percentage of a population has become immune to an infection. The first 500 million doses, the virologist said, are likely to go to 250 million people in the group that includes frontline workers, healthcare workers, sanitation, emergency services, and security services. This group also includes the elderly above 65 and patients with comorbidities. Immunologist Satyajit Rath said there is currently no particularly reliable estimate of the percentage of community coverage needed to be vaccinated in order to

Prior to the November 20 hike, petrol price had been static since September 22 and diesel rate hadn’t changed since October 2. OMCs revise rates of petrol and diesel daily based on benchmark international oil price and foreign exchange rate. They have, however, resorted to calibrating the rates since the pandemic broke out with a view to avoiding volatility in retail prices.

No business on Sunday, reiterates ABAM Will not entertain any (From p-1)

It said if shops were allowed to open in a State where its people have given the call “Nagaland for Christ”, what would be “our witness” for Christ to the world? It urged Nagas to understand the fact that it would be a mockery not only for the individuals but for the whole State, if they failed to follow the teachings of the word of God. ABAM reminded that the issue was discussed at length at its executive committee meeting on March 21-22, 2019 and thereafter it was resolved that “shopping/marketing on Sunday is totally against the biblical teachings and therefore all believers should refrain from it.” ABAM said the meeting also resolved to give instruction to its member churches to give sound biblical teachings to all believers in this regard. ABAM said it had stood opposed to opening of markets on Sunday in the past years and reaffirmed its commitment to stand for the same cause that went against God’s glory. It

also recalled how Nagas had been observing different festivals since their ancestors’ time with devotion and religious fervour. ABAM observed that till date the account of those good traditions and cultures linger in “our hearts”. However, when the gospel was preached to the people of Nagaland, all Nagas led by the Aos became followers of Christ and their feasts and feasts celebrated and based on animistic religions, were obliterated. ABAM said the concept of those celebrations remained in people’s minds and subsequently believers lived in their new faith in accordance to the teachings of the scripture. It said one of the legacies of forefathers still practised in a refined Christian way was the observance of Sunday. ABAM said after professing new faith, people were even barred from church membership for not conforming to the rules of Sabbath Day. As a consequence, in those days, they candidly complied and followed the teachings of Sabbath and could recognise the blessing of its adherence in their lives.

ANCSU urges govt to implement NSSB soon DIMAPUR, DEC 4 (NPN): All Nagaland College Students’ Union (ANCSU) Friday vowed to “object and encounter any element” that obstructed the rational implementation of the Nagaland Staff Selection Board (NSSB). In a press release, ANCSU president Vimeyiekho Vitso, vice president Inato Y Chisho and general secretary Imnameren N Jamir while welcoming and acknowledging setting up of NSSB urged state government to implement the NSSB at the earliest. Stating that the youth were grateful to the government for setting up the NSSB, the union, however, appealed to the state government to apply good sense of judgement impartially and rationally, which benefits Naga society as a whole, and not bow down to “short sighted irra-

tional and unethical demands” that would “vanquish the very purpose of NSSB.” ANCSU said it was “resolute” towards a future that ensures meritocracy, a system that encourages the aspirants and policies that benefits the society as a whole. The union stated that no civilization was forbidden to enhance one’s academic knowledge and experiences through educational institutions or otherwise. Therefore, ANCSU said it must be the endeavour of all “to avoid illogical demand(s)” that demeaned the efficiency of a qualified aspirant. Further, asserting that certain section of the society needed special attention, ANCSU, however, maintained that it cannot be remain quiet when the structure of meritocracy and fair competition was “to be overshadowed taking such advantages.”

Gadkari responded that work was in progress, and that 70-80% work had been completed and NHIDCL undertaken rigorous efforts to bring the project on track and expedite the work. Gadkari claimed that regular meetings at the highest level have been taken to expedite the progress of work on ground and urged the chief minister to further review the NH works to resolve the issue. Mumbai, Dec 4 (IANS): The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) on Friday retained its key short-term lending rates to subdue the unabatedly high inflation rate. However, the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) of the central bank maintained the growth-oriented accommodative stance, thus opening up possibilities for more future rate cuts. Resultantly, MPC voted to maintain the repo rate -- or short-term lending rate for commercial banks, at 4 per cent. Likewise, the reverse repo rate was kept unchanged at 3.35 per cent, and the marginal standing facility (MSF) rate and the ‘Bank Rate’ at 4.25 per cent. It was widely expected that the Reserve Bank’s MPC will hold rates as recent data showed that retail inflation has been at an elevated level during June. US approves sale of USD 90 mn worth of China is top threat to America: US intel chief military equipment and services to India

WASHINGTON, DEC 4 (AP): China poses the greatest threat to America and the rest of the free world since World War II, outgoing National Intelligence Director John Ratcliffe has said as the Trump administration ramps up antiChinese rhetoric to pressure President-elect Joe Biden to be tough on Beijing. “The intelligence is clear: Beijing intends to dominate the U.S. and the rest of the planet economically, militarily and technologically,” Ratcliffe wrote in an op-ed published on Thursday in The Wall Street Journal. “Many of China’s major public initiatives and prominent companies offer only a layer of camouflage to the activities of the Chinese Communist Party. I call its approach of economic espionage ‘rob, replicate and replace,’” Ratcliffe said. “China robs US companies of their intellectual property, replicates the technology and then replaces the US firms in the global

marketplace.” In Beijing, foreign ministry spokesperson Hua Chunying dismissed the editorial as a further move to spread “false information, political viruses and lies” in hopes of damaging China’s reputation and China-US relations. “It offered nothing new but repeated the lies and rumours aimed at smearing China and playing up the China threat by any means,” Hua said at a daily briefing on Friday. “It’s another hodgepodge of lies being produced by the relevant departments of the US government for some time.” Trump administration officials have been stepping up their anti-China rhetoric for months, especially during the presidential campaign as President Donald Trump sought to deflect blame for the spread of the coronavirus. On the campaign trail, Trump warned that Biden would go easy on China, although the president-elect agrees that China is not

Boris Johnson

NEW DELHI, DEC 4 (IANS): UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson on Friday announced a new ambitious target to reduce his country’s emissions by at least 68 per cent by 2030, compared with the 1990 levels. The UK’s new target to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, the country’s Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) under the Paris Climate Agreement, is among the highest in the world and commits the nation to emission cuts at the fastest rate for any major economy so far. The announcement came ahead of co-hosting of the Climate Ambition Summit by the UK on December 12, which will coincide with the fifth anniversary of the historic Paris Agreement. The summit calls on countries around the world to submit ambitious NDCs or other climate plans as the UK heads towards the UN COP26 climate talks, which the government will host in Glasgow next year. The new target meets the recommendation of experts at the independent Climate Change Committee, who advise the government on emissions targets. Johnson said: “We have proven that we can reduce our emissions and create hundreds of thousands of jobs in the process -- uniting businesses, academics, NGOs and local

Robbie Williams is forming a new band

R

obbie Williams is set to form a new band. The former Take That star - who quit the ‘Relight My Fire’ group in 1995 to launch a successful solo career, before reuniting with them from 2010 until 2012 - has teamed up with the producers and songwriters, Flynn Francis and Tim Metcalfe, who he worked with on his 2012 album, ‘Take The Crown’, for a new project. The trio have already

recorded some tunes and the ‘Angels’ hitmaker revealed he is considering throwing raves with his artwork on display to debut them live. Speaking to fans during an Instagram Live, he said: “Little project that I’ve got going on with a couple of friends of mine, Flynn Francis and Tim Metcalfe. We’re forming a band everyone”. “I’ve got songs coming out that will not be

under the name of Robbie Williams’. “I’m gonna do this thing with my friends. Form a band and what I’m gonna do is rent a space, put my art in there. During the day it’ll be a gallery”. “Then at night I shall be DJing and it will be a musical venue, something the old folks will call a rave”. “I’ll be on the espressos. Oh yes I will. Quadruple espresso. Doing it

old school”. “I’m very, very excited about this. I want to do it in Berlin. I also want to do it in Tokyo. I wanna do it in several places. Be fun won’t it? “It’s one of them things, it’s a passion project. If some thing happens then great, if not, I’ve just had fun.” The 46-year-old star has been prolific amid the coronavirus pandemic and recently revealed he’s penned some Take That tunes with Gary Barlow. He said: “I’ve been writing some songs with Gary Barlow in the last few weeks, too”. “Yeah, so, you know, we will ride again, me and my brothers. I don’t know when that’s going to be but we will ride again”. “The songs I’m writing are more mature than what I usually do. Whatever I do and whoever I do it with it will be unexpected.” The ‘Rock DJ’ hitmaker last appeared on Take That’s 2010 LP ‘Progress’. (Contactmusic)

Lagta hai mujhe mahan banake he dum lenge (I think they will take a break only after making me great.) Thank you,” Kangana Ranaut tweeted from her verified account on Friday reacting to a news piece talking about the legal notice. Earlier on Friday, the Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee sent a legal notice to Kangana, seeking an “unconditional

apology” for her “derogatory” tweets against farmers and activists involved in the farmers protest against the Centre’s three Farm Laws, the committee’s president. “We have sent a legal notice to Kangana Ranaut for her derogatory tweet calling the aged mother of a farmer as a woman available for Rs 100. Her tweets

portray farmers protest as anti-national. We demand an unconditional apology from her for her insensitive remarks on farmers protest,” Manjinder Singh Sirsa, President of DSGMC tweeted. The notice comes in the wake of a tweet from

the actress alleging that the ‘Shaheen Bagh dadi’ also joined the farmers’ agitation over the new agri laws at various border points of the National Capital Region. She had retweeted the post with pictures of two elderly women, including Bilkis Bano, and wrote that the “same Dadi” who featured in Time Magazine was “available in 100 rupees”. On Thursday a petition had been filed in Bombay High Court against Kangana. The petitioner seeks the suspension of the verified Twitter account of the actress for allegedly spreading hatred and disharmony. (IANS)

The Earth Orchestra makes history with first song by musicians in all 197 countries

H

istor y has been made after 197 musicians from every country in the world formed The Earth Orchestra. To d ay ( 0 4 . 1 2 . 2 0 ) marks the release of the global orchestra’s debut track, ‘Together is Beautiful’, and the accompanying documentary, ‘The Earth Orchestra’, which is helmed by Jamie Wolfeld. As per a press release, the project aims to “highlight the power that music has on unifying people from all cultures – transcending physical, cultural and political barriers.” The idea came about three years ago and the entire process has been documented in the film. Emma Newman & Jude Dexter Smith, Project Directors of The Earth Orchestra, commented: “Connecting with a musician from every single country in the world has been an incredible experience for us both. Music is such a potent tool of communication, and to see these people and hear the final recording with all 197 musicians on it is so powerful. We are humbled by the experience and hope that it brings joy to what has been an incredibly challenging year globally for everyone around the world.” Despite facing delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the musicians united remotely in the face of adversity to record the uplifting track. And they worked under the watchful eye of the BAFTA-winning composer, George Fenton - known for his work on ‘The Blue Planet’ and ‘Ghandi’ - who penned the music. He said: “The Earth Orchestra is the largest and in my view the most signifi-

cant orchestra in history. “The willingness of these gifted and diverse people to participate says it all for me. It’s simple and profound. A great reason to write music and an honour to be part of.” Icelandic piano player Kira Kira said: “I don’t think I knew how many countries there were on Earth. Looking for the similarities in each other rather than spotting what separates us is so beautiful to understand in a primitive way how alike we are. The Earth Orchestra is a gathering of voices from all the countries in the world with 197 smiles.” Mongolian throat singer and horse head fiddler, Bat-Erdene Victor Nyam-

davaa, said: “It makes so much sense that everyone can be different, everyone living in different countries, different language, different culture, but in the end we are just making this one piece of music, so beautifully as one, as a whole together.” And Zuhal Sultan from Iraq commented: “I would say if you are a musician and you play whatever instrument you may play or sing, and you have that love for what you do, then by extension you are connected to everybody who has that same passion. So I think it is a collection of people that create one entity that is united in their love for music.” (Contactmusic)

Arsenal, who along with, Leicester City, AS Roma and Hoffenheim, had already qualified, sealed top spot in Group B with a 4-1 win over Rapid Vienna as fans returned to an English Premier League stadium for the first time since March. Two thousand supporters braved the cold to watch on as the Gunners secured a fifth successive victory in the competition and become the only team still with a 100% record. “It was amazing -- we were so happy to see the fans today it really helped us during the game,” French striker Alexandre

Earlier at the San Siro, where Tom Rogic and Odsonne Edouard had fired Celtic 2-0 ahead within 15 minutes, Milan’s progress from Group H was threatening to get complicated. The hosts responded in devastating fashion though with Hakan Calhanoglu and Samu Castillejo scoring in quick succession. They battled to a 3-2 home win against Standard Liege to guarantee progress from Group D along with Benfica who thumped visitors Lech Poznan 4-0. Lille’s 2-1 victory over Sparta Prague saw the French group leaders qualify and guaranteed Milan’s path into the last 32. Tottenham’s Gareth Bale and substitute Dele Alli both scored penalties as the London side qualified from Group J despite being held to a 3-3 draw at LASK in a roller-coaster clash. “The fact that the Europa League group phase doesn’t motivate some of the players, I knew it,” a less-than-happy Spurs manager Jose Mourinho said. Tottenham must beat visitors Antwerp next week to claim top spot after the Belgians moved two points clear at the top with a 3-1 home victory over Bulgarian outfit Ludogorets. Spanish side Villarreal sealed first place in Group I with a 1-0 win at Sivasspor who may yet join them in the last 32 after Maccabi Tel Aviv could only draw away to Qarabag. In Group G, Sporting Braga joined Leicester City in the knockout rounds thanks to a 4-2 win at AEK Athens, while Leicester’s surprise 1-0 defeat at Zorya means the Foxes and

NEW DELHI, DEC 4 (PTI): Wrestler Narsingh Yadav’s participation in the upcoming World Cup in Serbia was confirmed on Friday after he returned a negative test for dreaded coronavirus. Making a comeback to competitive wrestling after serving a four-year doping ban, Narsingh had replaced Jitender Kinha in the 74kg in the Indian squad but was rendered doubtful for the competition after testing positive for the virus. The Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) confirmed that he will travel to Belgrade on December 14 along with the men’s freestyle squad. “I just had minor cold, there was no fever or any other symptom for virus, so I knew that it (test) will be negative. I have been training well for this tournament. We will do well in Serbia,” Narsingh told PTI from Hisar. Many top wrestlers, including Bajrang Punia and Vinesh Phogat, are skipping the event, anticipating that competition will not be strong but for Narsingh the World Cup, scheduled to held from December 12-18, holds significance.

“Whether it is World Championship or World Cup, it still is an international tournament. I will compete after a long long time, it will be good exposure for tournaments ahead,” he said. “It is important to play since the tournament is being held after a long time. We won’t know our level, unless we compete. There were no tournaments due to coronavirus pandemic, so it is very important for me to compete here,” the 31-year-old said. India are yet to earn a quota for the Tokyo Olympics in the 74kg category as Jitender fizzled at the

2019 World Championship which offered quota places. With the return of Narsingh in this category, there will be a three-way fight among Jitender, Narsingh and two-tile Olympic medallist Sushil Kumar to be Indian’s representative at the next quota-offering event. “I was already training hard even during my ban period. It was just that I was not able to compete. I thank the WFI President for letting me compete again. Hopefully, I will qualify for Tokyo,” said the 2015 World Championship bronze medallist.

Braga both have 10 points with one round of games remaining. Dinamo Zagreb claimed an impressive 2-0 win at Feyenoord to win Group K and leave the third-placed Dutch club in danger of missing the cut. Red Star Belgrade’s 0-0 draw with Hoffenheim in Group L means they join the German club in the knockout rounds. Roma nailed down top spot in Group A with a 3-1 home win over secondplaced Young Boys but Napoli must wait another week to secure their progress after drawing 1-1 at AZ Alkmaar. It left the Naples club top of Group F with 10 points but they cannot afford to lose at home to Real Sociedad in their final game as Sociedad and Alkmaar both have eight points. Alkmaar welcome bottom club Rijeka next week. Slavia Prague and Bayer Leverkusen qualified from Group C with a 3-0 win over Hapoel BeerSheeva and 3-2 victory at Nice respectively. PSV Eindhoven beat Granada 1-0 away in Group E to confirm their place along with the Spanish club in the knockout phase.

India beat Australia by 11 runs in first T20

CANBERRA, DEC 4 (IANS): India’s concussion substitute Yuzvendra Chahal, who came in for Ravindra Jadeja during Australia’s innings, picked three for 25 in his four overs to help India beat Australia by 11 runs in the first T20 International at the Manuka Oval on Friday. This was India’s sixth win over Australia in 10 T20Is on Australian soil. The win helped India take 1-0 lead in the three-match T20I series. India had earlier lost the ODI series 1-2. Chahal (3/25), who took the field as Jadeja could not play as a bowler in Australia’s innings after taking a hit on his head off Mitchell Starc’s short ball during his unbeaten knock of 23-ball 44, took the important wickets of skipper Aaron Finch, Steve Smith and Matthew Wade to dent the Aussie chase of 162. The Australians had got off to a good start but Chahal removed Finch and Smith in his first two overs. He came back to get rid of Wade as the Aussie middle-order batsman looked for a big hit in the face of a rising required run rate. T Natarajan (3/30) was the other successful bowler as he picked the wickets of Glenn Maxwell, D’Arcy Short and Mitchell Starc. The decision to bring in Chahal for Jadeja, who

just before getting hit on his head was already limping did not please Australia coach Justin Langer who was seen discussing the issue with match referee David Boon. Earlier, a well compiled half century from KL Rahul and the late onslaught from Jadeja helped India post 161. Put into bat, India didn’t have a great start as they lost a wicket early in the innings. Shikhar

Dhawan was undone by an out-swinger in the third over bowled by Mitchell Starc and went back to the pavilion after scoring just one. Skipper Virat Kohli, who came into bat next, then stitched a little partnership with Rahul and took the Indian score to 48. Just when the scoring rate seemed to be going up, Mitchell Swepson got the prized scalp of Kohli who was caught & bowled

by the leg-spinner at his individual score of 9. However, Rahul continued his good run and kept scoring boundaries whenever the Australian bowlers erred and along with Sanju Samson, took the Indian innings forward. Samson, during his stay at the wicket, played beautiful shots and made 23 off 15 before he was caught at covers while trying to hit a boundary against Moises Henriques.

CAPE TOWN, DEC 4 (IANS): The first Oneday International between South Africa and England has been postponed to Sunday (December 6) after a player from the Proteas team testing positive for COVID-19 after the teams last round of scheduled testing performed on Thursday

Next batsman Manish Pandey (2 off 8) didn’t stay long at the crease and was sent back to the dressing room by Adam Zampa. Rahul, who was till then holding one end up, soon became the second scalp of Henriques who had the India wicketkeeper-batsman caught in the deep by Sean Abbott. Rahul smashed five fours and a six during his 40-ball innings. Star all-rounder Hardik Pandya scored 16 off 15 before getting caught at long-off by Steve Smith while trying to go for a maximum against Henriques. However, Jadeja who has been among the runs in recent times, provided India the much-needed impetus and scored 44 off just 23 balls, with the help of five fours and a six to help the team end their innings at 161/7. Henriques was the pick of the Australian bowlers as he returned with figures of 3/22. Starc took two wickets while Zampa and Swepson picked one wicket apiece. Brief scores: India 161/7 (KL Rahul 51, Ravindra Jadeja 44*; Moises Henriques 3/22) beat Australia 150/7 in 20 overs (A Finch 35, M Henriques 30, Y Chahal 3/25, T Natarajan 3/30).

Chhetri spot-kick secures first win for Bengaluru in ISL

Bengaluru’s Sunil Chhetri taking a spot-kick against Chennayin during the ISL match.

BA M B O L I M , D E C 4 (AGENCIES): A Sunil Chhetri spot-kick in the second half was enough for Bengaluru to pick up their first win of the season in the 2020-21 Indian Super League (ISL) match against Chennaiyin at the GMC Stadium on Friday. In a match that was evenly-contested for most parts, it was the defending form both teams that took centre-stage. In a first half that was devoid of much goalmouth action, Chennaiyin's biggest blow was an injury to Anirudh Thapa. The India international midfielder had to be taken off in the 16th minute, with Edwin Vanspaul replacing him. Two minutes later, Ra-

fael Crivellaro registered his team's only shot on target in the first half when he fired a straightforward, first-time effort straight at Gurpreet Singh Sandhu. The game turned into an extremely cagey affair and the midfielder witnessed an intense battle with Vanspaul and Deepak Tangri working hard to keep the likes of Dimas Delgado and Suresh Wangjam in check. Suresh won a throw-in which Rahul Bheke delivered into the box to cause a bit of concern for the Machans' defence after the 30-minute mark. Cleiton Silva received the throw-in and chipped it into the box for Juanan whose header was on target but not powerful enough to beat Vishal

Kaith. The teams started the second half with much more energy. Deepak Tangri went close minutes after the restart from a Crivellaro freekick. The youngster sent a looping header towards goal from the centre of the box but Gurpreet's height allowed him to grab onto the ball. The deadlock was finally broken by the Blues in the 56th minute. Edwin Vanspaul brought down Silva inside the box and the referee pointed to the spot. Sunil Chhetri coolly slotted the ball past Kaith to give his team the lead. 2020 Games delay to cost $2.8 bn: Japanese organisers TOKYO, DEC 4 (AGENCIES): The postponement of the Tokyo Olympic Games until next year because of the novel coronavirus pandemic will cost Japanese organisers an additional 294 billion yen ($2.8 billion), the organising committee said on Friday. Organisers have been assessing the financial impact of the delay since the Japanese government and International Olympic Committee (IOC) decided in March to postpone the Games until 2021. Tokyo metropolitan government is expected to pay 120 billion yen, the organising committee 103 billion yen and the Japanese government 71 billion yen, organisers said. The IOC has previously said it will contribute $650 million towards covering postponement costs. This is separate from the costs announced by Japanese organisers on Friday. “Tokyo’s costs are Tokyo’s costs,” Tokyo 2020 CEO Toshiro Muto said. “Tokyo 2020’s (allocation) is revenue that we

can secure,” he added. “Within this revenue we have additional sponsorship that we have requested from partners and we also have insurance.” Tokyo 2020 is also falling back on a contingency fund of 27 billion yen detailed in last year’s budget to cover costs. The last official budget given by the organising

committee in December 2019, months before the Games were postponed, was $12.6 billion. Tokyo 2020 President Yoshiro Mori added that the IOC had agreed to waive any additional royalties accrued by new sponsorship deals secured by the organising committee. “I had a video conference last night with IOC

President Bach,” said Mori, who was wearing a red and white mask with the words ‘One Team’ on the side, the slogan of the successful Japanese rugby team during last year’s World Cup. “President Bach expressed his strong determination that the IOC and us should work as one team and cooperate to ensure the success of the Games.”

Robert Lewandowski disappointed by Ballon d’Or call WI win MCC’s Spirit of Cricket award

MUNICH, DEC 4 (AGENCIES): Robert Lewandowski believes the decision to cancel the 2020 Ballon d’Or was made “too early”, with the prolific Bayern Munich striker missing out on a chance to claim a prestigious Golden Ball. The 32-year-old frontman admits to having enjoyed the “best season” of his remarkable career to date in 2019-20. Bayern swept aside all before them en route to another historic treble last term, with their talismanic No.9 leading the way as he plundered 55 goals across all competitions. Lewandowski appears to be getting better with age, with the stunning standards he has set for himself continuing to be raised as he becomes ever more productive. His exploits have already been recognised by the UEFA Player of the Year award, while he remains a strong favourite to claim FIFA’s The Best prize.

Robert Lewandowski

No one, though, will be adding a Ballon d’Or to their collection, with France Football opting against selecting their cream of the global crop in a coronavirus-impacted 12 months. Lewandowski remains

disappointed by that decision, with every other major honour having been handed out in 2020. The Bayern star told the Daily Mail: “Someone had to decide that this year there would be no Ballon d’Or.

“Maybe they decided too early because every [other] trophy has been decided. So many players, coaches, journalists know that, for me, it was the best season. “We did what we did and it was spectacular. I’m glad everyone has seen it. These awards are something nice, amazing. “But I also know that every personal trophy is for the team. The team without the striker finds it difficult to work but the striker without the team doesn’t work either.” Fo r n ow, L ewa n dowski’s focus is locked on chasing down more collective silverware at Bayern, with Hansi Flick’s side determined to defend their Bundesliga, DFB-Pokal and Champions League crowns. With the German giants already through to the last-16 in Europe, Lewandowski said: “We have won this trophy but it is clear once is not enough. “We are still hungry. We want to taste this feel-

ing with the fans, in a full stadium. Maybe after this season we will have a double celebration.” Remaining competitive in 2020-21 will not be easy, though, with a short summer break, lack of supporters in grounds and a gruelling schedule making life difficult for all concerned. Lewandowski added: “After [last] season when we [finished] and opened the new one, with such a short time to prepare, it is very hard —very hard for the body. Every player, every team. It’s going to be impossible to compare this season to last year or next year. “This is so hard. So many games, such a hard time and then the European Championship straight away. You have to think about your body and, in March, how it will be. “Will we be ready when the most important games are coming? You are a professional footballer and you have to adapt.”

File photo of cricket team members of West Indies.

LONDON, DEC 4 (AGENCIES): West Indies have won this year’s Spirit of Cricket award after sending both their men’s and women’s teams to tour England during the COVID-19 pandemic, the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) has announced. The men’s side arrived in England in June for a three-test series played in a biosecure environment, which saw international cricket resume for the first

time since the novel coronavirus outbreak brought the global calendar to a halt. The women featured in a Twenty20 international series against England in September after India and South Africa were unable to tour because of the pandemic. “In a year when cricket has brought us much solace, it is entirely fitting that Cricket West Indies and their men’s and women’s teams should be recognised

for the courage of their decision to tour England, an act which truly embodies the spirit of cricket,” MCC President Kumar Sangakkara said. The MCC, which acts as custodian and arbiter of the laws of the sport, also praised the boards of Pakistan, Ireland and Australia for allowing their teams to play in England. Jason Holder’s West Indies side won a similar award from the Cricket Writers’ Club in October.
