In an exclusive conversation, Rakesh Tikait told India Today, “Now, a rally of 40 lakh and not four lakh tractors will be taken out.” Referring to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s criticism of agitation-savvy individuals, Rakesh Tikait said, “He [PM] has never been part of any agitation in his life. In fact, he did the job of breaking the nation. What would he know about

Rakesh Tikait went on to say that the ongoing farmers’ agitation will continue till October 2 of this year. “But the protest will not end even after that. Farmers will keep returning to the protest sites in shifts,” the BKU leader told India Today. Asked why he has been addressing Mahapanchayats in Haryana, farmer leader Rakesh Tikait asked, “Is holding a Mahapanchayat in Haryana prohibited?” On Monday, Reacting to PM Modi’s assurance on giving minimum support prices to farmers, Tikait said that the PM did not say that a law will be enacted for MSP and the country does not run on trust. “Prime Minister said
‘MSP hai, tha aur rahega’ in parliament but he did not say that a law will be enacted. The country does not run on trust. It runs on the constitution and law,” said Tikait. Tikait added that the farmers’ stir is not backed by any political party. “No political party is supporting us. We are here for a genuine cause,” he added. “MSP (Minimum Support Price) tha, MSP hai aur MSP rahega’ (MSP was there, MSP is there, MSP will remain in the future) said Modi in Rajya Sabha on Monday. P
unjab chief minister Amarinder Singh on Tuesday said that Punjab would prove to be the party’s nemesis. The BJP should start preparing itself for political oblivion, Amarinder Singh said the chief minister, adding the party’s fate is now sealed, not just in Punjab but also at the Centre, where its despotic rule is all set to end. “The farm laws will spell the death-knell for this repressive, despotic and autocratic party. Kohima reels under acute fuel shortage Correspondent
KOHIMA, FEB 9 (NPN): The State Capital was reeling under acute shortage of fuel on Tuesday, the second time within a span of one week. Petrol and diesel tankers en route to Kohima are reported to have been hold up at Jharnapani since Friday, leading to the fuel shortage. Sources said that the shortage was triggered following the closure of a stretch along NH-29 after the rockslide incident. While most petrol pumps were closed, those selling petrol in black market are said to have increased the rate to Rs 120 per litre, further adding to the misery of citizens. Panic buying of petrol was also witnessed at several pumps in and around the State Capital, even as long queues of vehicles were spotted at the few pumps that were still open. Sources from petroleum dealers said that fuel could reach here only on Friday, but unconfirmed sources stated that some tankers were allowed to move towards Kohima on Tuesday evening.

DIMAPUR, FEB 9 (NPN): Reverse Osmosis (RO) water purification plant and dialysis unit were installed at Dimapur District Hospital (DHD) here on Tuesday under the initiative of Western Sümi Baptist Akukuhou Kuqhakulu (WSBAK). WSBAK executive secretary Rev. Dr. Phughoto Sema, who dedicated the RO plant and dialysis unit donated by WSBAK, said that a seven-day commitment was made to carry out the
initiative and communicated among members about the project. He said that about 780 young people came forward to donate money for the cause, adding Rs.19 lakh was collected from March 14 to 22, 2020 for setting up of RO plant and dialysis unit, bed and air conditioning. Rev. Phughoto also informed that as of now the hospital had two functional dialysis units, but the infrastructure was set up for four dialysis units, adding that two dialysis units were still needed. Also, speaking
on the occasion, Covid-19 technical team of WSBAK, Dr. Hotokhu Chishi said that during the Covid-19 pandemic the WSBAK formed a technical team of WSBAK and decided to work on two things-- to establish a quarantine centre for the people (quarantine centre ran for around one month in collaboration with Western Sumi Hoho) and to identify the most needed areas that could be used during the pandemic. He said that during the survey, they found out that DHD did not have intensive care unit and chemo dialysis unit. Dr. Chishi said the team has, therefore, set up their priority and decided to focus on providing a dialysis machine unit along with installation of RO plant in April 2020 and started the mission. However, he said that due the lack of infrastructure, the installation was carried out only in December 2020. Describing Dimapur
as a unique district unlike other districts in Nagaland, Dr. Chishi called upon all to come forward and extend help. “It is time for every tribe, community, leaders to learn and participate and contribute…,” Chishi said. With regard to health infrastructure, Dr. Chishi said that “we have been neglected badly and have failed miserably, many have lost their lives because of the lack which is unfair.” He, however, expressed optimism that with the participation and contribution there was hope for a change and better tomorrow. Dr. Chishi expressed hope that the responsible authority would utilize the installed facilities to the most possible for the needy and downtrodden. Medical superintendent Dr Keveduyi Theyo proposed vote of thanks while WSBAK mission and evangelism secretary Rev. Tovishe Sema said the benediction.

Coronavirus unlikely to have leaked from China lab: WHO WUHAN, FEB 9 (AP): The coronavirus most likely first appeared in humans after jumping from an animal, a team of international and Chinese scientists looking for the origins of COVID-19 said Tuesday, dismissing as unlikely an alternate theory that virus leaked from a Chinese lab. A closely watched visit by World Health Organisation (WHO) experts to Wuhan—the Chinese city where the first coronavirus cases were discovered—did not dramatically change the current understanding of early days of the pandemic, said Peter Ben Embarek, the leader of WHO mission. But it did “add details to that story,” he said at a news conference as the group wrapped up a nearly four-week visit to the city. And it allowed the joint Chinese-WHO team to rule out one theory on the origins of the virus. The Wuhan Institute of Virology collected many virus samples, leading to allegations that it may have been the source of the original outbreak, whether on purpose or accidentally. But experts now con-
Findings suggest that the laboratory incidents hypothesis is extremely unlikely - Peter Embarek sider the possibility of such a leak so improbable that it will not be suggested as an avenue of future study, said Embarek, a WHO food safety and animal diseases expert. China had already strongly rejected that possibility and has promoted other theories. Chinese and foreign experts considered several ideas for how the disease first ended up in humans, leading to a pandemic that has now killed more than 2.3 million people worldwide. Embarek said the initial findings suggest the most likely pathway the virus followed was from a bat to another animal and then to humans, adding that would require further research. “The findings suggest that the laboratory incidents hypothesis is extremely un-
likely to explain the introduction of the virus to the human population,” he said. The mission was intended to be an initial step in the process of understanding the origins of the virus, which scientists have posited may have passed to humans through a wild animal, such as a pangolin or bamboo rat. Transmission directly from bats to humans or through the trade in frozen food products are also possibilities, Embarek said. WHO team’s visit is politically sensitive for Beijing, which is concerned about being blamed for alleged missteps in its early response to the outbreak. An AP investigation has found that Chinese government put limits on research into the outbreak and ordered scientists not to speak to reporters.
No time frame for NH 129A issue: 4 villages Naga solution, object to realignment says Centre DIMAPUR, FEB 9 (NPN): chas Pura. They said this DIMAPUR, FEB 9 (NPN): Minister of State (MoS) for Home Affairs, G Kishan Reddy on Tuesday informed the Parliament that the talks with Naga groups were at an “advanced stage”. Reddy, however, said no time frame for agreement can be indicated at this stage. Reddy was replying to an unstarred question raised by Lok Sabha MP, Tokheho Yepthomi on the progress of talks between the Government of India and the Naga groups and whether the agreement was likely to be signed this year. As reported earlier, the draft of the blueprint for the agreement between the Government of India and Naga groups has been finalised and awaits the approval of the Prime Minister’s Office.
In another instance of villages objecting to re-alignment of road, four villages— Vidima, Razaphe, Razaphe Basa and Disagaphu- have reacted to the re-alignment of the proposed NH-129A (Dimapur-Peren-Maram). The four villages in a joint statement have appealed to the state government to reconsider the decision to re-align the route and revert back to the old alignment in the larger interest of the public and convenience of all. In a representation addressed to the deputy chief minister & minister PWD (R&B), VVC chairman Pelezo Zumvü, RVC chairman Neiphilie Kense, RBVC chairman K Kruzecha Rio and DVC chairman Joydanam Langthasa expressed shock that the route had been re-aligned towards Mhainamtsi- Ngwalwa-Pa-
was a total diversion from the old plan which was more convenient and likely to involve lesser time and resources. The signatories pointed out that as per the old alignment, there was already an existing road, which was presently used as diversion route between Dimapur-Kohima in times of emergency, and was found to be the most convenient alternate route. However, they said that taking the new alignment would only involve more inconveniences as there was no proper existing road and great amount of resources have to be put in to make it motorable. Further, they said that there was difference of about 10km between the two routes, adding that the old route was shorter and more convenient for the (Cont’d on p-8) public.
CM inaugurates NLA’s automated library, trg room NSF dismayed at Ravi’s directive to CS Correspondent
KOHIMA, FEB 9 (NPN): Nagaland chief minister Neiphiu Rio inaugurated the fully automated library and state-of-the-art training room of the Nagaland Legislative Assembly (NLA) here Tuesday at the Assembly secretariat. In his address, the chief minister said it was important to note that the role of the library, in a broader perspective, was not just a repository of books and other information from which the elected members can draw, but a qualitatively different service which would attend to information management as well as facilitating information access. Rio stressed that the vision for a good library for the legislators should be to transform itself into a professional, knowledge-based, technologically updated in-

stitution, providing quality service to the members. He also lauded Assembly Speaker, Sharingain Longkumer for taking the initiative to incorporate the latest technology into the functioning of the Assembly library. Rio said this was also another step in the direction of paperless governance.
Rio also said another area that needed more attention was providing quality training periodically to human resources, whether it was for government functionaries or people from other fields. “Only through quality training would the functionaries expand their
DIMAPUR, FEB 9 (NPN): Naga Students’ Federation (NSF) has expressed dismay at Government of India interlocutor and Nagaland governor RN Ravi’s alleged attempt to “silence the voice of Naga people and suppress their rights” by his recent directive to the chief secretary. NSF president Ninoto Awomi and general secretary Liremo R. Kikon were reacting to a recent directive from the governor to the chief secretary to take action against a government official for “seditious and subversive” writings challenging the territorial integrity and sovereignty of the country and posting them on social media. NSF said it took serious note of the directive, and viewed it as another attempt by Ravi to undo the peace and understanding brought (Cont’d on p-8) about by his predecessors.
knowledge-base, updating themselves with the latest development in their field of activity,” Rio added. Also addressing the occasion, deputy chief minister Y. Patton said that libraries are traditionally seen as a source of information. However, a modern library with internet connectivity provides access to so much more within a very short time, he said. Patton said he was optimistic that the library will provide an effective information management service to all the members and will also replace paper-based processes creating a congenial atmosphere for effective time, resources and paper documents management. He expressed the hope that the automated library and training room will go a long way in facilitating all
The federation alleged that by issuing the impugned directive, in singling an official, governor intended to “create fear psychosis among the State government employees” to send a message that he “has his eyes and ears planted in the Naga society to achieve his desired end of dividing Naga people.” NSF said it was also a manifestation of his “dominant attitude and his ever failing approach of thrusting the dominant might upon them”. NSF said that as interlocutor for the Indo-Naga peace talks, it expected much more from Ravi and “to not indulge in trickery and divisive politics”. NSF said as the Centre’smandated interlocutor to bring lasting peace between India and the Naga people, it expected Ravi to truly understand and respect the
unique history of Nagas and accordingly work out mechanisms in the interest of the two entities. However, NSF said it was “appalled at his various misconducts and misdemeanours”. NSF maintained that “Nagas would not be cowered down by attempts to stifle their voices and belittle their legitimate rights” and their voices cannot be muted, notwithstanding the “evil designs of opposing forces”. NSF also asked Ravi not to treat the “Nagas’ struggle for self-determination as another secessionist movement” as the collective assertion of Nagas was to live “as a people free from any illegal occupational forces based on historical facts”. Therefore, said NSF not a single soul should be persecuted for voicing out the truth. (Cont’d on p-8) K Y M C

water scarcity and exuded confidence that, with two more projects in pipeline, the villagers would get huge relief from water scarcity. According to her, water in some villages dried up in the last 10-15 years and now the villagers were compelled to buy water. Therefore, she said it was high time to rejuvenate the springs. DPO explained the site projects and how the implementation was done with financial support from National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) and cooperation from the village community. He urged the visitors to understand the concept of the project for its successful replication. Thanking the visiting team for organising the field trip, he said their visit would boost the morale of all those involved to be more committed during implementation of the

Shillong, Feb 9: The agitating Meghalaya Joint Action Committee of Commercial Vehicles (MJACCV) on Tuesday demanded further reduction in petrol and diesel prices from the Conrad Sangma-led government, even as it threatened to further intensify their agitation. Commercial vehicles, including cabs and buses have been off the road in the State from February 3 demanding a rollback of price hike in petrol and diesel. Faced with public criticism, the State Government on Sunday reduced the price of petrol and diesel by Rs. 2 per litre. Unhappy at the “measly” price reduction, members of MJACCV held a sit-in demonstration at Malki ground and demanded further reduction. “The increase in fuel prices has not only affected the livelihood of the vehicle owners and drivers, but it has also affected the entire society,” MJACCV Chairman, WandonbokJyrwa said. Correspondent IMPHAL, Feb 9: Agitating government college teachers in Manipur on Tuesday resolved to go ahead with its planned intensified forms of stirs even as chief minister N Biren Singh appealed for a talk. Teachers of government colleges were on strike for the last 10 days under the banner of the Federation of Government College Teachers Associations (FEGOCTA), pressing the state government to adopt 7th UGC Pay and Regulations 2018 in the state. The teachers were on a series of sit-in-protest at various colleges in the last 10 days without affecting the normal classes and were planning to intensify their stir from February 12 by taking mass casual leave for two days. It will be followed by indefinite class boycott
stir from February 17 as resolved by FEGOCTA in a meeting convened on February 6 last. Chief minister N Biren Singh today made an appeal to the striking teachers to review their decision of boycotting class considering the student community, in the house of the ongoing budget session of the state Assembly. During a calling attention motion, the chief minister admitted that the state government had agreed to adopt the 7th UGC Pay and Regulations 2018. The state cabinet had agreed to adopt the same in principle. However, the implementation of the same was delayed because of the adverse impact of Covid-19 on the state’s economy and its precarious financial conditions. The striking should know the financial problem being faced by the state. The state government had even cut almost half of
the budget allocations of each department to meet the expenses incurred in the fight to contain the pandemic. The teachers should think of the condition of the state economy. The government would like to hold a talk with the leaders of the agitating teachers. “Do come to the negotiating table and cooperate with the government in finding a solution,” he told the house. Earlier responding to a call attention motion, state education minister S Rajen Singh assured the house that the state government will address the demand of the college teachers as soon as possible. Despite the appeal of the chief minister, college teachers will go ahead with its planned stirs, said FEGOCTA, in a statement, today. “The government college teachers are set to take mass casual leaves on

IMPHAL, Feb 9: Opposition Congress in Manipur continued its rally to demand disqualification of the 12 MLAs who were appointed as the parliamentary secretaries by the BJP government. The party commenced its campaign for the disqualification of the 12 MLAs from Monday with a rally in Mayang Imphal in Imphal West district. On Tuesday, the second day of the campaign, a similar rally was carried out at Naoriya Pakhanglakpa of the same district. Hundreds of Congress workers and supporters marched on the streets after a mass sit-inprotest. The protest was organised by Naoriya Pakhanglakpa Block Congress Committee. They displayed various placards that read “Honour r ule of law”, “Honour court’s judgement”, “BJP should stop destroying constitution”, “Save constitution save democracy”, etc. during the
protest. In September 2020, the High Court of Manipur pronounced the Manipur Parliamentary Secretary (Appointment, Salary and Allowances and Miscellaneous Provisions) Act, 2012 and the Manipur Parliamentary (Appointment, Salary and Allowances and Miscellaneous Provisions) Repealing Act, 2018 invalid and unconstitutional. A division bench of the HC delivered the judgment in response to the petitions filed by four persons including two Congress MLAs in 2018 challenging the appointment of parliamentary secretaries at the same time quashing the Act. The HC passed the order based on the ruling of the Supreme Court in the case of Bimolangshu Roy versus the state of Assam. Following the judgment of the court, opposition Congress has been demanding disqualification of the 12 MLAs who were appointed as parliamentary secretaries. The party had even sought intervention
of the state Governor in this regard. Taking part in the protest, MPCC secretary Dr S Manaoton said that the protest will continue until the 12 MLAs are disqualified. He alleged that even after judgement of the court, the concerned authorities, including Election Commission of India, has not taken up disqualifying the 12 MLAs of the ruling parties. He said that after the passing of the judgment, Congress party has approached the state legislative Assembly and state Governor to take up the needful steps to disqualify the MLAs. After failure on the part of the authorities, the party had even knocked on the door of ECI. However, no action is taken up so far from the ECI side, he said. The secretary added that the BJP-led Manipur government has been proven to have committed illegal and unconstitutional acts by appointing the 12 MLAs as parliamentary secretaries.

has the power to reduce fuel prices, as it is a state subject. MJACCV said that various vehicle taxes, the COVID-19 cess, can also be done away with. Jyrwa warned that the associations have so far resorted to peaceful agitation, but the State Government seems not receptive to its demand and so they would take stringent action if their demands are not met. Other members of the association pointed to the increase in vehicle taxes, which has affected the livelihood of several people and put them into economic hardship. On the other hand, the fuel price rise and the subsequent hike has affected mainly the people living in the rural areas as many have not been able to bring their ailing family members to the urban areas for medical treatment. Meanwhile, due to the strike by the commercial vehicles, the prices of vegetables and some essential commodities in the State Capital are steadily rising as these have not been transported from some of the rural areas of the State.
February 12 and 13. It will be followed by class boycott from February 17,” FEGOCTA general secretary Dr N Somorendro Singh said, in the statement. These were decided at the collective sit-in-protests cum meeting of government college teachers organised by FEGOCTA at D M College of Science, Imphal on February 6, he reminded. “The government college teachers did not and do not want agitations in the past and present. Therefore, the college teachers request for orders of 7th UGC Pay and Regulations, 2018 at the earliest to avoid any disturbance in academic atmosphere in the colleges,” FEGOCTa stated. Under the aegis of FEGOCTA, college teachers were staging sit-in-protests for the 10 day. As the past three written assurances to FEGOCTA have not been fulfilled, there is a trust deficit, it added. Unless the orders of 7th UGC Pay and Regulations, 2018 are issued, the present agitations will continue as resolved in FEGOCTA executive committee meetings. Teachers have been compelled to undertake the unprecedented 5th agitations by FEGOCTA. The sit-in-protests was held in different government colleges in hill and valley areas, the statement claimed.
“The project is being taken up to fulfil the long-awaited demand of the local public,” said MoRTH. The bridge will provide connectivity between Jorhat and Kamalabari ghat of Majuli. As of now, people living in these areas rely on river ferries for transportation. Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal welcomed the initiative of the Central government. “The construction of one of the most important bridges over the Brahmaputra connecting Jorhat to the sacred river island Majuli is a great infra project for New India,” said Chief Minister Sonowal. PM concern over increasing violence in Afghanistan NEW DELHI, FEB 9 (PTI): In a message of solidarity with Afghan people, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday said “no external power” can stop the development of Afghanistan or its friendship with India and that both the neighbours want to see their region free from the “grave” threat of terrorism and extremism. He also expressed concern over increasing incidents of violence in Afghanistan including cowardly targeting of innocent citizens, journalists and activists, and noted that India supports a comprehensive ceasefire to end the hostilities. Modi was speaking at a virtual meeting with Afghan President Ashraf Ghani which was organised to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the construction of the Lalandar dam by India in Afghanistan that would help in meeting the drinking water requirement of Kabul city. “I want to assure every Afghan brother and sister, from Badakhshan to Nimroz and Herat to Kandahar that India stands with you. At every step of your journey of patience, courage and determination, India will be with you,” Modi said.
Narendra Modi
In his remarks, Ghani said peace in Afghanistan is within the grasp if parties and their backers in the Taliban embrace a true political solution, seen as a clear reference to Pakistan. The Afghan President said terrorism must be seen as a “full eco-system” and not as isolated groups or individuals, noting that the “destructive forces” are threatening the future of the region. Modi said strengthening internal unity among Afghan people is very important and exuded confidence that a united Afghanistan will be able to face any challenge.“No external power can stop the development of Afghanistan, or the India-Afghanistan friendship,” he said. India has been a major stakeholder in Afghanistan
and it has extended developmental assistance to tune of around USD 3 billion in the last few years to the country. “We are concerned about the increasing violence in Afghanistan. Innocent citizens, journalists and activists are being cowardly targeted. We have called for an immediate end to the violence, and we immediately support a comprehensive ceasefire,” Modi said. “Violence is a retaliation for peace, and the two cannot go together. As a close neighbour and strong strategic partner, both India and Afghanistan want to see their region free from the grave crisis of terrorism and extremism,” he said. The prime minister noted that India has been supportive of a peace process that is led, owned and controlled by Afghanistan. “In the success of Afghanistan, we see the success of India and its entire region,” Modi said. In his brief address at the meeting, Ghani said all stakeholders must be asked to respect “rules of sovereignty’’ and stop giving “sanctuaries” and interfering in the affairs of their neighbours, in an apparent reference to Pakistan.

A bench headed by Chief Justice S A Bobde issued notices and sought responses from the Centre and others on the petitions filed by Tharoor, Sardesai and journalists Mrinal Pande, Zafar Agha, Paresh Nath, Vinod K Jose and Anant Nath. When the bench said it was issuing notice in the matter, senior lawyer Kapil Sibal, appearing for Tharoor, said that no coercive action be taken against them in the meantime. “Nothing is going to happen. Where is the danger,” said the bench, also comprising Justices A S Bopanna and V Ramasubramanian. Sibal objected to the observation of the bench that nothing would happen to the petitioners in the meantime, saying Solicitor General Tuhsar Mehta is appearing for Delhi Police and the cops of other states might “knock at my doors and arrest me in the meantime”. “Kindly protect us in the meanwhile,” Sibal said, prompting the bench to ask the law officer whether the police was planning to arrest Tharoor and others.

JAMMU/NEW DELHI, FEB 9 (PTI): In a bid to keep an eye on the cyber world in a “coordinated and comprehensive manner”, the government has asked common people to register as cyber crime volunteers to help check posts against the sovereignty of the nation, on child and women abuse and attempts to disturb the law and order situation. The project known as Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C) is an initiative of the Union Ministry. It was started in militancy-hit Jammu and Kashmir last week where the police issued a circular asking citizens to register themselves as volunteers. The volunteers are asked to keep an eye on posts which are against the sovereignty and integrity of India, against the defence of India, against the security of the State, against friendly relations with foreign States, content aimed at disturbing public order, disturbing communal harmony and child sex abuse material. A spokesperson of Jammu and Kashmir police said that any Indian citizen can get associated with this programme by registering in any of three categories of cyber volunteers -- Cyber Volunteer Unlawful Content Flagger, Cyber Awareness Promoter and Cyber Expert. Vaccine challenges
O
ngoing researches have shown that the COVID-19 virus is mutating almost once in two months, by giving rise to new RNA genetic material and structural proteins. Scientists have identified a pattern of mutations in the novel coronavirus which enable it to evade the immune system's antibodies, findings that shed light on how the virus may possibly escape existing vaccines and therapeutics. Findings say that , the new coronavirus has sloughed off small chunks of its genome, leading to changes in a viral protein that is frequently targeted by antibodies. The researchers believe this long time of "cat and mouse" play between the immune system and the coronavirus in such patients gives "ample opportunity" to initiate a "co-evolutionary dance". They said this competition results in "worrisome mutations" in the viral genome that are resulting in variants of the coronavirus such as the ones first reported in the UK and South Africa. The emergence in Britain and South Africa of two new variants of SarsCoV-2, which are potentially far more infectious versions of the virus, has prompted widespread concern. One mutation - variant B117, which likely emerged in southeastern England in September, according to Imperial College London - has now been detected in countries across the world, including the US, France and India. Another variant, 501.V2, was detected in South Africa in October, and has since spread to several nations, including Britain and France. Both have multiple mutations to the virus, most notably on its spike protein - the part of the virus that latches on to human cells and helps it spread. According to studies, recent variants of the virus seem to spread more easily, which scientists say will rapidly lead to many more cases, deaths and hospitalisations. "Evolution was repeating itself. By looking at this pattern, we could forecast. If it happened a few times, it was likely to happen again," said Kevin McCarthy, a co-author of the study from the University of Pittsburgh. While it is yet to be determined how far these mutations erode protection, McCarthy said "At some point, we're going to have to start reformulating vaccines, or at least entertain that idea." Researchers at Imperial College London released the results of a study into thousands of genetic sequences of Sars-CoV-2 found in Britain between October and December last year. They found that the new variant had a "substantial transmission advantage", with a reproduction rate between 0.4 and 0.7 higher than the unmutated virus. Preliminary studies on the South African variant have also concluded it is more contagious than regular Sars-CoV-2. Producing newer vaccines to counter the mutations is keeping the scientific research community on their toes. Researchers have developed a new method using Artificial Intelligence (AI) to counter emergent mutations of the coronavirus and speed up vaccine development to stop the pathogen responsible for killing thousands of people worldwide. Another counter has been to treat severe Covid-19 patients with an anticancer drug- Bevacizumab- believed to reduce mortality and speed up recovery, a new study suggests. Bevacizumab is a medication that has been used to treat various types of cancer since 2004. With the global race to find the near-perfect vaccine with least side effects, the mutating virus is certainly going to keep remind people that the worst isn’t over yet for sometime.
DailyDevotion Are You Exhausted Spiritually?
The everlasting God…neither faints nor is weary. —Isaiah 40:28 Exhaustion means that our vital energies are completely worn out and spent. Spiritual exhaustion is never the result of sin, but of service. Whether or not you experience exhaustion will depend on where you get your supplies. Jesus said to Peter, “Feed My sheep,” but He gave him nothing with which to feed them (John 21:17). The process of being made broken bread and poured-out wine means that youhave to be the nourishment for other people’s souls until they learn to feed on God. They must drain you completely— to the very last drop. But be careful to replenish your supply, or you will quickly be utterly exhausted. Until others learn to draw on the life of the Lord Jesus directly, they will have to draw on His life through you. You must literally be their source of supply, until they learn to take their nourishment from God. We owe it to God to be our best for His lambs and sheep, as well as for Him. Have you delivered yourself over to exhaustion because of the way you have been serving God? If so, then renew and rekindle your desires and affections. Examine your reasons for service. Is your source based on your own understanding or is it grounded on the redemption of Jesus Christ? Continually look back to the foundation of your love and affection and remember where your Source of power lies. You have no right to complain, “O Lord, I am so exhausted.” He saved and sanctified you to exhaust you. Be exhausted for God, but remember that He is your supply. “All my springs are in you” (Psalm 87:7).

angana Ranaut again and again is attacking the Indian farmers as terrorists. She has done that in response to the world famous pop singer Rihanna and famous environmentalist girl Greta’s support to farmers’ movement. Sachin Tendulkar and other pro-BJP forces also joined the chorus. Most of these forces are promonopoly houses and hardly have any engagement with the agrarian production. One’s own social location in terms of caste plays a key role in taking stands when the farmers of India and the business and industrial houses are on the course of conflict. International expressions cannot be judged based on convenience. In a globalised world international opinions get expressed on many things. In fact the BJP/RSS mobilized international opinions in their favour on many occasions. Such international opinions were expressed during the antirape Nirbhaya agitation and the RSS/BJP combine was very happy and welcomed such global opinions coming in since those opinions were against the Congress Government at that time. The farmers issue is a massive survival issue of the whole nation itself. I have never in my life time experienced such massive agitation by farmers.
O
Farmers are tillers, not killers
What do Sachin Tendulkar and Kangana kind of people know about agriculture? Particularly Kangana Ranaut’s language against farmers has shocked the whole world, not just the nation. It is a well known fact that Kangana is a Ksatriya arrow left on the Indian Shudra farmers by Yogi Adithyanath. I say this with conviction because the agitating farmers mostly are Shudras and the Ksatriyas as a community did not put its hand on the plough, in their historical existence, though they own estates of land. They treat tilling land below their community status. Quite interestingly the Jats of Uttar Pradesh are in the lead of the movement at present under the leadership of Rakesh Tikait, who is a son of the famous Mahendra Singh Tikait. Even then Kangana says the same thing that she was saying against Punjab farmers linking this agitation to Khalistan. The caste system makes many of the policy decisions biased. There is a clear divide between the agrarian production and the business networks that want to make business and make profits around agrarian produce. Farmers have never evolved into a business community in India. Even the high end agriculturist communities
like Kamma, Reddy, Velama, Kapu, Lingayat, Jat, Gujjar, Yadav, Maratha and so on did not get into high end monopoly businesses. The high end business is mainly in the hands of national Banias, Brahmins, Kayathas, Khatris. Of late Ksatriyas are also entering into business. The farmers’ fears get compounded because of this caste divide also. Kangana, who characterises the food producers comes from a family that never tilled an acre of land and never sowed a seed and produced a ton of grain. She comes from a horse riding and knife wielding family heritage. Perhaps she has not seen how a farmer’s furrow germinates the plant that becomes the source of life blood of all others in the country while living in a mansion in Himachal Pradesh. There is a fine Telugu folk song that has become a trend setter on youtube written by a Telugu writer Asta Gangadhar ‘Raithu (farmer) the Legend’ and sung by Relare Ganga, which broadly goes as follows: O farmer you are our hero O farmer you are our legend O farmer you produce food from the mud Unless you produce
Conservative SCOTUS reaffirmed life and liberty
ne among the final acts of President Donald Trump was the signing of an Executive Oder on January 17, 2021 to promote and protect life, male and female and born and unborn, by proclaiming the National Sanctity of Human Life Day to be observed on January 22, 2021, which coincided with the 48th anniversary of the infamous 1973 Roe v. Wade ruling that legalized abortion which is nothing less than a death warrant for an unborn child. In his proclamation letter, he stated that: “Every person is made in the holy image of God… On National Sanctity of Human Life Day, we celebrate the wonder of human existence and renew our resolve to build a culture of life where every person of every age is protected, valued, and cherished”. This proclamation of National Sanctity of Human Life Day, coinciding with Roe v. Wade anniversary, had invoked the conscience of America and the world on the evil acts of destroying life of an unborn child inside the mother’s womb and that too with the protection of the establishment, and reminding everyone that life, beginning from conception, has a supreme value and cannot be equated with nor replace by any other beings, living or non-living, on this planet earth, and that time is now appropriate to overturn the nearly five decades old deadly ruling which devalues life. Through the proclamation, the president also pledged his commitment to the Geneva Consensus Declaration signed by 34 countries on October 22, 2020 with an objective of promoting life globally through a “global efforts to provide better healthcare to women, protect all human life, and strengthen families”. In a stark contrast, Joe Biden’s series of executive orders at the start of his presidency only reflect his administration’s anti-life agenda which aims at devaluing life of a human being. His Executive Order on “Preventing and Combating Discrimination on the Basis of Gender Identity” undermines God’s unique creation of human being as distinctively two genders – male and female. There is no more gender beyond the two. Government or human reasons and opinions cannot change this God’s nature of creation. Any male or boy who is thinking that he is a girl is in a state of mental turmoil and confusion, struggling to come to term with his gender, and is in desperate need of help. He needs the best possible form of treatment and counseling. But the new President unfortunately did not agree to that. Instead his executive order, under the guise of gender identity and equality, is adding more confusion to the boy by giving him the right and privilege to use girls’ private spaces including washrooms and locker rooms in school or public places and permitting him to participate in girls’ sports. This is bound to severely affect the right, privacy and safety of women. One of the most cherished values that make life worthwhile and the most important aspects of freedom of an individual is the right to freedom of religion. A Conservatives’ majority Supreme Court of the United States (SCOTUS), which was reorganized by Donald Trump by converting it into a conservative’s fortress, had conforms to this right, and did it right once again at the time when the powerful establishment and Democrats cohorts under
President Joe Biden launched a scathing and systematic assault on people’s right to life and freedom of religion, and the February SCOTUS’ ruling ensured that these rights will be guarantee, and that under no circumstances will the government be permitted to undermine the same. On February 5, 2021, in a South Bay United Pentecostal Church vs. Gavin Newsom, Governor of California, the SCOTUS’ in its 6-3 ruling overturned California’s Governor’s enforcement of prohibiting indoor church services as part of the state’s Covid-19 crisis related restrictions. The state government’s attempts to regulate the way people speak or worship is an act of showing hostility directed against the free speech and religious liberty. In effect, this series of restrictions imposed by the state establishment on religious institutions during the Covid-19 pandemic proved that the first amendment comes under formal attack not by unruly rioters/mobs but by state establishment itself. The California state’s Covid restriction specifically targeting religious institutions and events in a time such as this, while letting violent protests across the state go on with no constraint from the authority, is a manifestations of a typical establishment’s character taking advantage of the crisis to amass political power for their own and government establishment at the expense of the right of the citizens. The crisis granted an undue pretext for the governments’ elites to further empower governments and trampled the power of the people, which was the ultimate promise of democracy not only for America but for the whole world. The explanation, based on the face value, behind the restrictions is that all the religious related events/gatherings are potential virus super-spreader events, and that if the spread of the Covid-19 virus has to be control then those religious gatherings need to be restricted, if not barred for some time. This restriction had created a ridiculous hypothesis that the Covid-19 virus spread only during religious events and gatherings, and not in the bars, casinos and in the violent protests in the streets. Justice Amy Coney Barrett while concurring with the ruling exposed the hypocrisy of the left and the Democrats of the state on their biased approach to religious gatherings and other non-religious gatherings where restriction was imposed only on the former. She held that: “If a chorister can sing in a Hollywood studio but not in her church, California’s regulations cannot be viewed as neutral”. The Democrats and the mainstream liberal media see this coming and that’s why they did everything they can to stop the then President in November 2020 from appointing her as a new Justice to the SCOTUS which they failed eventually. Amy Coney Barrett will go down in history as a legendary conservative figure, and many similar actions from her, like the one in this latest SCOTUS’ ruling, in defending and promoting life and religious liberty is expected in the coming years. A conservative SCOTUS overruling the legislation of the major blue state on the question of religious liberty is a testament to the fact that the Donald Trump’s presidency continues to impact America and the world even after he left office. food computers cannot work Unless you produce food the robots do walk Unless you produce food the soldier cannot fire a gun Kangana calls this farmer who is the real hero of the nation and real legend of the nation, a terrorist repeatedly. She does not seem to read or hear what is said and written about her daily attack on farmers. Why did the international response come even after so many days of farmer agitation against the new farm laws? A tribal environmentalist young girl from North East India called Kangujam, who is just nine, gave a call to the world to respond to the suffering farmers in the cold, in corona pandemic in the open on Delhi borders. They are facing police lathis, barricades along with insufficient food and water. Kangujam tweeted, “Dear friends, our millions of poor farmers sleeping in the streets in this cold weather don’t expect anything from you. Just your one tweet of love and support /solidarity to their cause means a lot to them. Our Indian celebrities are lost!” This appeal of our own environmentalist young Adivasi girl invoked responses from many global celebrities
S
including Rihanna who said in her hashtag tweet “Why aren’t we talking about this farmers’ protest” with a picture of Indian farmers living in the cold on the Delhi border. This led to a series of tweets. Greta Thunberg said “We stand in solidarity with the farmers protest in India” Actress and Instagram influencer Amanda Cerny too showed her support: She said: “The world is watching. You don’t have to be Indian or Punjabi or South Asian to understand the issue. All you have to do is care about humanity. Always demand freedom of speech, freedom of press, basic human and civil rights-equity and dignity for workers. #FarmersProtest #internetshutdown” Kanagana said in her tweet in response to these international tweets, they “are not farmers but terrorists who are trying to divide India”. She not only repeatedly slut shamed Rihanna in a aseries of tweets, Ranaut also called Thunberg a “dumb and spoilt brat”. Kangana’s response must be seen in the background of the BJP Government trying to project the farmers movement as Khalistani terrorist movement. For the first time in six years Modi rule a political
blunder has been committed. He went after farmers who voted the BJP to power twice. His Government and party also do not stop such a miscalculated attack on the farmers. Why should the Government of India become very sensitive to individual criticism from abroad? As I said such a criticism came more than this when Nirbhaya rape agitation took place in Delhi. The narrative of farmers getting attacked as terrorists is certainly making the organic intellectuals coming from the agrarian family background who write in every regional language their own songs, stories and novels. The farmers agitation has inspired a new genre of writing, singing and dancing in the villages. The farmer terrorist language is infuriating them. That will have its fall out sooner or later. Social media cuts both ways. In one particular stage it worked in the RSS/BJP favour. But now the narrative is changing. Farmer is too much of a nationalist to be brandished as terrorist or anti-national. A budget for V shaped recovery, V for Vindication
ince the past few days, a phrase that had caught the fancy of many people from both sides of the political fence was “V shaped recovery”. If I jog my mind, the last time, the alphabet V had found itself amidst such anticipation was when the artsy British Film “V for vendetta” released. Before the budget, many intellectuals from opposite ideologies had advocated a “V for Vendetta” budget, Increase the Income taxes, heavily tax the corporates, decrease Government spending etc. But, if I have to put a label on this budget, I would call it “V for Vindication” budget. This budget is sheer vindication of this Government’s approach towards economic revival. What the Government has aimed to achieve through this budget is indeed courageous, it surely has not missed the woods for the trees. The budget came amidst a pandemic that had ravaged much of the last year. The Indian economy contracted by 7%, revenue dried up, spending soared, demand stalled, exports flattened and business investments came to a standstill. With the depletion of revenue, the only way by which the country was kept afloat was Government expenditure. Much of this expenditure was in providing food grains to 800 Million people under PM Garib Kalyan Yojana. In the face of such fiscal challenge, any other Government would have been on its knees, pressured to overtly please its constituents or take recoursein economic patchwork. But this Government accepted the challenge of a burgeoning fiscal deficit of 9.5% to focus on productive growth. The Government astutely increased capital expenditure, or expenditure to create productive assets by 26%, to an unprecedented 5.5 Lakh Crore while decreasing the non-productive revenue expenditure substantially. An increase in creation of productive assets has a multiplier impact of jobs and spending, thus this budget is much more than what meets an untrained eye. When time called for stepping up and taking responsibility for a revival, the Government took a brave stance and provided buoyancy to the other sectors to recover at its own expense. This risk is indeed a certificate of trust and appreciation that the Government has placed on the entrepreneurial spirit of its people. When Covid disrupted everything, many countries
went into panic spending, while India spent incrementally, this cautious yet pragmatic approach coupled with the foresight of the Government saw India emerging as a lone bright spot in the post Covid era. The only thing that could further augment investor confidence on India was a dream budget, thus the bull of the stock market has not stopped running since. One logical question that followed was,if the Government is not increasing taxes then how will it be able to fund this capital expenditure? The answer lies in disinvestment, IPO’s and unlocking the potential of assets that Government holds. Thus, this budget has a disinvestment target of 1.75 lakh crores, monetization of assets held by Government and state’s PSU’s. The Corona pandemic laid bare before our eyes the inadequacy of our health infrastructure, the world feared absolute pandemonium but the Government’s deft handling of the pandemic left many global opinion makers at loss of words. In contrast to the western countries, India emerged victorious albeit with a realisation to strengthen our health infrastructure, after all as the Honourable PM had put it “Jaanhaintoh Jahan hain”. The Budget hiked the allocation for health by a whopping 137% to 2.23 Lakh Crore, aone-time allocation of 35,000 Crore for Corona vaccination coupled with a new scheme “PMAtmaNirbharSwasthya Bharat Yojana” with an outlay of 64,6180 Crores will mark a paradigm shift in the health systems of the country. As a stamp of approval for the Jal Shakti Ministry’s tremendous work of providing tap connections to 3.3 Crore households, a number more than the total tap connections provided in the last 70 years, 2,87,000 crores has been allocated to Jal Jeevan Mission (Urban). 1.41 Lakh crore for Swachh Bharat 2.0 for complete faecal and waste water management
will push India towards Holistic sanitation. Broadening the ambit of providing social benefits to every Households, the UjwalaYojana has been given a target of 1 crore more households. The allocation of 16.5 Lakh Crore to agricultural credit, allocation of 40,000 crore to rural infrastructure fund, doubling the funds for micro irrigation and bringing 1000 more mandis into e-nam system are statements of commitment towards our annadatas. The voluntary vehicular scrapping policy is the shot in the arm that the automobile sector needed, the phasing out of unfit vehicles will generate new demand for the auto industry which will translate into massive benefits throughout the value chain. The PLI scheme worth 1.97 Lakh crore has been broadened to 13 sectors, the confidence shown on manufacturers in 2020 through PLI scheme was well rewarded thus this year’s budget envisions India as a world class manufacturing hub for the world. Railways has been given the highest allocation of 1.1 Lakh crore ever. The railways ensured that transportation of goods went onunhindered during the pandemic. The resilience of the Indian railways was at full display and thus, the railways is expected to chug India forward in 2021. The numerous steps taken for the reinvigoration of Indian economy in this year’s budget will take much more ink and space then possible, but one thing Is for sure, the Government could have gone for a survival budget, a recovery budget, but it showed the gumption to think long term and went for a growth budget, a resurgence budget. India has finally unabashedly embraced growth, the budget is one major step towards the cherished dream of the country, the dream of AtmaNirbharta. Modi breaks down as he bids adieu to Azad
NEW DELHI, FEB 9 (PTI): Prime Minister Narendra Modi broke down several times in the Rajya Sabha on Tuesday while reminiscing about his close association with Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad whose term is coming to an end next week. The prime minister was participating in the farewell speech for Leader of Opposition Azad and three other members from Jammu and Kashmir -- Nazir Ahmad Laway, Shamsher Singh Manhas, Mir Mohammad Fayaz-- whose terms in the Upper House are coming to an end. Modi said it would be difficult for anyone to fill the shoes of Azad as he cared not only about his political affiliation but also about the country and the House. “I worry that after Azad whosoever will take over from him will have to fill very big boots because he cared not only about his party but about the country as well as the House. This is not a small thing, this a big thing,” Modi said. He noted that Azad had called him to ask for an all party meeting during COVID-19 period. “I liked that and also did it. because he has the experience of both being in power and in opposition. Twentyeight years experience in all, it is a big thing,” the prime minister said. Reminiscing about their long association, Modi said that as chief ministers of Jammu ad Kashmir and Gujarat, both of them kept in touch with each other. Sharing details of their communication during a terrorist attack on some Gujarati pilgrims in Jammu and Kashmir, Modi said Azad was the first one to call him about the incident. With tears rolling down his cheeks, Modi said that Azad cried on the call while informing him about the horrific attack. “Azad was the first person to call me. During that call he could not stop crying,” Modi said with a choked voice as tears rolled down from his eyes.
Azad later went to the airport when the bodies were sent back and kept in touch till the plane landed in Gujarat, Modi said. “Power comes and goes but (only a few know) how to digest it...therefore like a friend, I respect him on the basis of the things he has done over these years,” Modi said while wiping his tears and saluting Azad. Modi said he believes that Azad’s concern for his country won’t let him sit and whatever responsibilities he takes in the future would be beneficial for the nation. “At a personal level, I would request him to not believe that he is not in the House. My door is always open for all of you. I will always expect and value your inputs,” he said. “I will not let you become weak,” the prime minister told Azad as he closed his comments.
Leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha and senior Congress politician Ghulam Nabi Azad, whose Rajya Sabha term is ending this month, on Tuesday said that “I am a proud Indian Muslim. Muslims should be proud of this country but the majority community should take steps forward towards the minority.” Azad said, “I never visited Pakistan but I know the problems and circumstances in that country and I hope those problems do not come to haunt the Muslims of India and after seeing the fate of Muslims in many countries I feel proud of being a Hindustani Muslim.” He said, “I have been in Parliament and state assembly for 41 years and got a chance to work with Indira Gandhi, Rajiv Gandhi, Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi as party Presidents.” He said the Congress gave him a chance to interact with many big leaders, including Jyoti Basu. The retiring Rajya Sabha members from Jammu & Kashmir urged the house that issues of J&K should be considered and statehood should be restored soon for
Ghulam Nabi Azad the benefit of the people of the state. Azad thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his kind words and also said that he first cried when Sanjay Gandhi, then Indira Gandhi and later Rajiv Gandhi all died unnatural deaths and he also wept after a cyclone in Odisha. Prime Minister Modi also got emotional while bidding farewell to Azad and saluted him in the Rajya Sabha. Azad is one among four members retiring from the Upper House this month. The Prime Minister, while referring to Azad’s contribution to politics and the House, said: “You are retiring from the House, but I will not let you retire and my doors are open for you and I will need your contribution and advice.”
Toll rises to 31in Uttarakhand flood; Shah says rescue ops on war-footing NEW DELHI, FEB 9 (AGENCIES): With the recovery of five more bodies on Tuesday, the death toll from the Uttarakhand glacier disaster rose to 31, even as a multi-agency operation to rescue around 35 workers feared trapped inside a swamped tunnel at the Tapovan power project in Chamoli district continued on Tuesday, officials said, reported PTI. Union Home Minister Amit Shah also issued a statement in Rajya Sabha on the avalanche in Uttarakhand’s Chamoli district and said all concerned agencies of Centre and State are monitoring the situation. Members of Rajya Sabha also paid tribute to victims of the disaster. In Lok Sabha, Shah said that Centre is monitoring the situation. “PM himself is monitoring it. Both the control rooms of the Home Ministry are monitoring the situation round the clock and the state is being provided with all the possible help,” he said. Earlier during the day, Chief Minister Trivendra Singh Rawat conducted an aerial survey of areas affected due to the glacier

disaster and took stock of the situation. Personnel of the ITBP, NDRF and Army worked to locate around 170 people, mostly labourers working at two power projects, who are still reported missing. Officials said rescue operations are centred around a 1,900-metre-long tunnel at NTPC’s Tapovan site, where at least 35 people are believed to be trapped. A barrage at the project site had been washed away in the flood that saw water rise up to 70 feet, leading to debris blocking the 20feet-wide opening of the tunnel. Uttarakhand DGP Ashok Kumar told The
Indian Express that they had managed to reach 130 metres into the Tapovan tunnel. “We do not anticipate much trouble after we reach 200 metres,” he added. Manjunath S R, commandant, Indian Reserve Battalion, who is coordinating the rescue operations at the site, said, “Till yesterday, we had managed to go 80 metres into the tunnel and managed another 50 metres by Monday evening. The operation will continue the whole night. There is a lot of slush that needs to be removed. The armed forces, NDRF, SDRF and police are all working in coordination.”

Sunil Kumar, a former IPS officer who joined the JD(U) last year shortly after retiring from DG rank, and Jayant Raj, a 35-year-old who is among the youngest party MLAs, have also been given ministerial berths. Sunil Kumar is an alumni of St Stephen’s College, Delhi. LesiSinghs induction has raised the number of women in the cabinet to three. Earlier, BJPs Renu Devi and JD(U)s Sheela Mandal had been sworn in and the former was elevated as a Deputy CM. The NDA had been facing flak from the opposition over the absence of a Muslim in the cabinet. With the induction of Hussain and Khan, it now has ammunition in its armour to counter the charge. Shahnawaz Hussain took oath in urdu, Sanjay Jha did so in maithili language while others chose hindi at the swearing-in.

Supreme Court notice to Centre on implementation of farm laws NEW DELHI, FEB 9 (PTI): The Supreme Court Tuesday sought response from the Centre on a plea by a firm seeking implementation of the controversial new farm laws and its inclusion as a member in the committee formed by the top court to resolve impasse between the government and farmers protesting against the legislations. A bench of Chief Justice S A Bobde and Justices A S Bopanna and V Ramasubramanian issued notices to the Ministry of Law and Justice and Ministry of Agriculture while tagging the plea with similar petitions. The apex court was hearing a plea filed by an Aligarh-based company seeking immediate direction to the Central government and Uttar Pradesh government to implement the three laws -- the Farmers’ (Empowerment and Protection) Agreement on Price Assurance and Farm Services Act, the Farmers’ Produce Trade and Commerce (Promotion and Facilitation) Act, and the Essential Commodities (Amendment) Act. PATNA, FEB 9 (PTI): The much awaited expansion of the Nitish Kumar cabinet in Bihar took place on Tuesday with the induction of 17 members, including Syed Shahnawaz Hussain, the high-profile Muslim face of the BJP which walked away with the lions share. The former union minister and party national spokesman, who got elected to the legislative council in a surprise move last month, was the first to be administered oath of office by Governor Phagu Chauhan. He was among nine inductees from the quota of the BJP which now has 20 members in the state cabinet. The Chief Ministers JD(U), which has suffered diminution in clout because of its poor performance in assembly polls, settled for eight and has been left with 12 members in the cabinet. As per norms, the state cabinet can have up to 36 members including the chief minister. With the expansion cabinet strength has risen to 34. One member each was inducted from the quotas of smaller allies Hindustani AwamMorcha (HAM) and VikassheelInsaan Party (VIP) when the cabinet was formed in November last. “Decision about the allocation of portfolios has

FY22 Union Budget has proposed to raise the foreign-ownership limit on insurers to 74 per cent from 49 per cent which would allow foreign investors to hold majority stakes in Indian-based insurers for the first time. The proposal comes with new requirements to ensure sufficient local participation, such as the majority of insurers’ key management personnel and board members to be resident Indians and a requirement that at least half of the board comprises independent directors.

New Delhi, Feb 9 (IANS): India’s budgetary boost for startups is expected to trigger employment generation, besides ushering in manufacturing and innovation-led growth in FY22. According to the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) Secretary Guruprasad Mohapatra, measures such as extension of startup tax holiday and norms to incorporate One Person Companies (OPCs) will give a major boost to the sector and these benefits will percolate to the overall economy. The Union Budget 2021-22 has proposed to extend tax holiday for startups by one more year. The move comes as India focuses on ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ mission aimed at making India a more selfreliant nation. In another boost for startups, OPCs will be allowed to grow without any restriction on paid-up capital or turnover and to convert into any other type of company at any time. New Delhi, Feb 9 (PTI): The government will soon bring a bill on crypto currencies as existing laws are inadequate to deal with issues concerning them, Minister of State For Finance Anurag Thakur told Rajya Sabha on Tuesday. Replying to a question in the Upper House, Thakur said regulatory bodies like RBI and Sebi do not have any legal framework to directly regulate crypto currencies as they are not currencies, assets, securities or commodities issued by identifiable users. The government had formed an Inter-Ministerial Committee which has given its report on issues related to virtual currencies. The Committee of Secretaries chaired by the Cabinet Secretary has also given its report. “A bill (on crypto currencies) is being finalised and it will soon be send to the Cabinet. Yangon, Feb 9 (AP): Police cracked down on crowds of demonstrators against Myanmar’s military takeover who took to the streets again on Tuesday in defiance of rules making the protests illegal. Water cannons were used in Mandalay, Myanmar’s second-biggest city, where witnesses said at least two warning shots were fired to try to make the crowd disperse. Reports on social media said police arrested more than two dozen people there. They also used water cannons in the capital Natpyitaw for a second day running and fired shots into the air. The protesters are demanding that power be restored to the deposed civilian government and are seeking freedom for the nation’s elected leader Aung San Suu Kyi and other ruling party members detained since the military took over and blocked the new session of Parliament from convening on February 1. The g rowing defiance is striking in a country where past demonstrations have been met with deadly force and are a reminder of previous movements in the Southeast Asian country’s long and bloody struggle for democracy. The military

used deadly force to quash a massive 1988 uprising against military dictatorship and a 2007 revolt led by Buddhist monks. The decrees issued Monday night for some areas of Yangon and Mandalay banned rallies and gatherings of more than five people, along with motorised processions, while also imposing a 8 pm to 4 am curfew. It was not immediately clear if regulations have been imposed for other areas. Demonstrations Tuesday were also held in
other cities, including Bago — where city elders negotiated with police to avoid a violent confrontation — and Dawei, and in northern Shan state. In Magwe in central Myanmar, where water cannons were also used, unconfirmed reports on social media claimed several police officers had crossed over to join the protesters’ ranks. A police officer in Naypyitaw was also said to have switched sides. Crowds also gathered in Yangon, the country’s biggest city where thousands
of people have been demonstrating since Saturday, despite a heightened security presence. No violence was reported. Soldiers do not appear to have been deployed yet to stop the demonstrations, a small indicator of restraint by the military government. The army has a record of brutality in crushing past revolts as well as in fighting ethnic minorities in border areas seeking self-determination. It also has been accused of carrying out genocide in its 2017 counterinsurgency
Iran may pursue nuclear weapon, says intel minister

Tehran, Feb 9 (AP): Iran’s intelligence minister has warned the West that his country could push for a nuclear weapon if crippling international sanctions on Tehran remain in place, state television reported Tuesday. The remarks by Mahmoud Alavi mark a rare occasion that a government official says Iran could reverse its course on the nuclear programme. Tehran has long insisted that the programme is for peaceful purposes only. A 1990s fatwa, or religious edict, by the country’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei states that nuclear weapons are forbidden. “Our nuclear programme is peaceful and the fatwa by the supreme leader has forbidden nuclear
weapons, but if they push Iran in that direction, then it wouldn’t be Iran’s fault but those who pushed it,” Alavi was quoted as saying. “If a cat is cornered, it may show a kind of behaviour that a free cat would not,” he said and added that Iran has no plans to move toward a nuclear weapon under current circumstances. The 81-year-old Khamenei, who has the final say on all matters of state in Iran, on Sunday urged the United States to lift all sanctions if it wants Iran to live up to commitments under its 2015 nuclear deal with world powers. However, President Joe Biden has said the US won’t be making the first move. Following the killing last December of an Iranian scientist credited with
spearheading the country’s disbanded military nuclear programme, Iran’s parliament has approved a law to block international nuclear inspectors later this month — a serious violation of the accord. Alavi, the intelligence minister, was also quoted as saying that a member of the Iranian armed forces “facilitated” the killing of the scientist, which Iran has blamed on Israel. The minister did not expand on what he meant — and it was not clear if the soldier had carried out the explosion that killed the scientist, Mohsen Fakhrizadeh. Israel, which has been suspected of killing Iranian nuclear scientists over the last decade, has repeatedly declined to comment on the attack.
This was the first time that Iran acknowledged a member of its armed forces may have acted as an accomplice in the killing of Fakhrizadeh, who headed Iran’s so-called AMAD program, which Israel and the West have alleged was a military operation looking at the feasibility of building a nuclear weapon. The International Atomic Energy Agency — the UN’s nuclear watchdog — says that “structured programme” ended in 2003. US intelligence agencies concurred with that assessment in a 2007 report. However, Israel insists Iran still maintains the ambition of developing nuclear weapons, pointing to Tehran’s ballistic missile programme and research into other technologies. In December Iran’s President Hassan Rouhani vowed to avenge Fakhrizadeh’s killing, saying his country will decide time or venue of any retaliatory action. In response to former President Donald Trump’s so-called “maximum pressure” campaign against Iran, the country began to gradually violate its atomic commitments under the nuclear deal, and threatened further provocations in a bid to increase its leverage and get Biden to prioritise a return to the deal as he moves to dismantle Trump’s legacy.

to curtail the raw animosity of the Trump years, both the Democratic and Republican parties maintain strong support for Taiwan and a tough approach toward China over trade, human rights and its increasingly assertive military and foreign policies. Tsai’s remarks came as the US Pacific Fleet conducted exercises in the South China Sea combining ships and planes from the aircraft

The exercises Tuesday were aimed at “increasing interoperability between assets as well as command and control capabilities,” the US 7th Fleet said in a statement. “The ships and aircraft of the two strike groups coordinated operations in a highly trafficked area to demonstrate the US Navy’s ability to operate in challeng-

SANAA (YEMEN), FEB 9 (AGENCIES): Heavy fighting between government forces and Houthi rebels has killed more than two dozen people in the past three days in the central Marib province, Yemeni officials and tribal leaders said Tuesday. The U.N. voiced concerns about the Houthi attacks in the oil-rich province. The war in Yemen erupted in 2014, when Iran-allied Houthi rebels seized the capital and much of the country’s north. A Saudi-led coalition, determined to restore the authority of President Abed Rabbo Mansour Hadi’s government, launched a sweeping military intervention months later. The officials said at least 29 people were killed and dozens were wounded from both sides in the most recent fighting for Marib. The rebels have sought to take control of the province, an anti-Houthi stronghold held by the internationally recognized government. Tribal leaders said the Houthis have deployed reinforcements to break government defenses in Marib, but they have made no progress.
Wa r s aw / B e r l i n / Stockholm, Feb 9 (IANS): In a tit-for-tat move, the governments of Poland, Germany and Sweden have expelled Russian diplomats in direct response to Moscow’s expulsion of officials from the three European nations over their participation in rallies against the detention of opposition figure Alexei Navalny. On February 5, the Russian Foreign Ministry had declared the Swedish, Polish and German diplomats personae non gratae due of their participation in the January 23 “unauthorized rallies” in Moscow and St. Petersburg. Representatives of these countries’ embassies were summoned to the Russian Ministry and handed notes of protest. In a statement on Monday, the Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs warned that it would take what it called appropriate steps if the “groundless expulsion” of its diplomat was not reconsidered, reports Xinhua news agency. The Ministry said the decision was taken “in coordination with Germany and Sweden to consider the Russian diplomat as a persona non grata”.
The expelled diplomat worked at the Russian Consulate in Poznan, Poland’s fifth largest city. Also on Monday, the Federal Foreign Office of Germany said that Russia’s decision to expel the diplomats “was not justified in any way”. It added that the German diplomat was merely carrying out his task of reporting developments on the spot in a legal fashion. Taking to Twitter on Monday night, Swedish Foreign Minister Ann Linde said: “We have informed the Russian Ambassador that a person from the Russian embassy is asked to leave Sweden. “This is a clear response to the unacceptable decision to expel a Swedish diplomat who was only preforming his duties.” Navalny, a harsh critic of the Russian government, was detained on January 17 upon his landing at a Moscow airport from Germany, where he had received medical treatment for alleged poisoning over the past few months. His detention sparked ongoing mass protests in major Russian cities, including capital Moscow, St Petersburg, Novosibirsk, Yakutsk, Omsk and Yekaterinburg.

Ties with US strong amid threats from China: Taiwan Taipei, Feb 9 (AP): As the US Navy asserts its presence in the South China Sea, Taiwan’s leader says its ties with Washington remain solid over the transition from the Trump to the Biden administration. President Tsai Ing-wen said Tuesday that US military support remains firm even as China sends increasing numbers of military aircraft into Taiwan’s southwestern airspace. “I would like to reiterate that Taiwan will not back down when receiving pressure and will not rashly advance when receiving support,” Tsai said in a traditional Lunar New Year television address. “As long as the Beijing authorities are willing to resolve conflicts, we also want to have a dialogue with them under the conditions of equality and dignity,” Tsai said. While China and the US have indicated a desire
campaign that drove more than 700,000 members of the Muslim Rohingya minority across the border to seek safety in Bangladesh. State media for the first time on Monday referred to the protests, claiming they were endangering the country’s stability. “Democracy can be destroyed if there is no discipline,” declared a statement from the Ministry of Information, read on state television station MRTV. “We will have to take legal actions to prevent acts that are violating state stability, public safety and the rule of law.” However, the military commander who led the coup and is now Myanmar’s leader made no mention of the unrest in a 20-minute televised speech Monday night, his first to the public since the takeover. Senior Gen. Min Aung Hlaing instead repeated the claims about voting fraud that have been the justification for the military’s takeover, allegations that were refuted by the state election commission. He added that his junta would hold new elections as promised in a year and hand over power to the winners, and explained the junta’s intended policies for COVID-19 control and the economy.
Spacecraft Amal in Mars orbit.
Amal’s arrival puts the UAE in a league of just five space agencies in history that have pulled off a functioning Mars mission. As the country’s first venture beyond Earth’s orbit, the flight is a point of intense pride for the oil-rich nation as it seeks a future in space. An ebullient Mohammed bin Zayed, the UAE’s day-to-day ruler, was on hand at mission control and said: “Congratulations to the leadership and people of the UAE for the indescribable joy of the arrival at Mars.” About 60 per cent of all Mars missions have ended in failure, crashing, burning up or otherwise falling short in a testament to the complexity of interplanetary travel and the difficulty of making a descent through Mars’ thin atmosphere. A combination orbiter
and lander from China is scheduled to reach the planet on Wednesday. It will circle Mars until the rover separates and attempts to land on the surface in May to look for signs of ancient life. A rover from the US named Perseverance is set to join the crowd next week, aiming for a landing February 18. It will be the first leg in a decade-long US-European project to bring Mars rocks back to Earth to be examined for evidence the planet once harbored microscopic life. If it pulls this off, China will become only the second country to land successfully on Mars. The US has done it eight times, the first almost 45 years ago. A NASA rover and lander are still working on the surface. For the UAE, it was the country’s first venture beyond Earth’s orbit.

nternational pop sensation Ronan Keating understands why Grammywinning superstar Beyonce infuses an Indian flavour in her songs and videos, and says he hopes to work with a Bollywood star or a singer one day. “I have been lucky enough to travel to India many times over the years, touring with Boyzone and on my own. I remember clearly being at the MTV awards. It was amazing,” Keating told IANS in an exclusive interview. “I love travelling and having the opportunity to come to India was a wonderful experience. I loved it. The people were amazing. They were so warm, caring, and genuine. I had a real connection when I was there with the people, and I would love to come back,” added the singer, who performed in India at MTV Immies 2005. After his brief affair with India, the singer wants to forge a deeper bond with the country by working with Indian talent. “I would love to connect with a Bollywood artiste and perform, sing, shoot a music video… The colours, the performance, the energy,” said the 43-

estlife have split from their record label. The ‘What About Now’ hitmakers - made up of Shane Filan, Markus Feehily, Kian Egan and Nicky Byrne - have parted ways with EMI over two years after the release of their 2019 album ‘Spectrum’, which topped the charts in the UK and featured five songs written by Ed Sheeran. A spokesman for the band told The Sun newspaper’s Bizarre column: “They’ve agreed a mutual parting of ways with EMI and details of a new and groundbreaking partnership are imminent. “The next 18 months are shaping up to be the band’s busiest, including a new album, sold-out stadium shows — featuring a first show at Wembley Stadium — plus their biggest-ever global tour, which will include their first-ever American shows. “The band are also considering opportunities for a spectacular end-of-year TV show and a documentary special.” The news comes almost a year after the Irish band had to cancel their

They said at the time: “We have been monitoring the UK government advice surrounding mass gatherings and it is very clear that this is the course we need to take to ensure the protection of our fans, our crew and everyone around us but also to ease pressure on those working tirelessly to fight this virus. “Those who have been
on the Westlife journey with us know how important performing is to us but also know that safety must come first and foremost in delivering a successful tour. “Our promoters are currently working with their ticketing partners and they will be in touch very soon to process your refund. Eng thrash India by 227 runs in 1st Test
Chennai, Feb 9 (IANS): Left-arm spinner Jack Leach (four wickets) and veteran speedster James Anderson (three wickets) on Tuesday bowled England to a massive 227-run win on the fifth and final day of the first Test here, and take a 1-0 lead in the four-match series. Chasing an extremely difficult target of 420 runs on a crumbling and dusty MA Chidambaram Stadium pitch, India in their second innings were bundled out for 192 in 58.1 overs in the second session on the fifth and final day. Having set India a 420-run target to win, England bowled a listless India out for 192 in 58.1 overs, with 29-year Leach taking four for 76 and Anderson bagging three for 17. All five bowlers took wickets, with fast bowler Jofra Archer, off-spinner Dominic Bess, and pacer Ben Stokes taking one scalp each. Leach was the pick of the England bowlers in the second innings as he returned with figures of 4/72 in the 25 overs he bowled. He was ably supported by Anderson who scalped three wickets, conceding just 17 runs in his 11 overs. Dominic Bess, Ben Stokes and Jofra Archer picked one wicket each. Earlier, England had scored 578 runs in their first innings in

reply to which India posted 337, thus conceding a lead of 241. The visitors were then bundled out for 178 to set a 420-run target for the Indian team. This was India’s first Test defeat at home since 2017 when they had suffered a 333-run loss against Australia in Pune. After that, they played 14 Tests in between, registering win in 11 while three matches ended in a draw. This was India’s fourth Test defeat against England at the Chepauk, first after 1985 when the visitors registered win under David
Gower’s captaincy. Before this Test match, India had faced England in 60 matches at home, registering win in 19, losing 13 and drawing 28. Overall, India and England have competed in 123 Tests, out of which India have won 27, England 47 while 49 matches have ended in a draw. Earlier on the fifth and final day on Tuesday, India resumed their chase at 39/1 but lost Cheteshwar Pujara early as he was caught in the slips against Leach, after scoring 15 runs off the 38 ball he faced.
IOC says Tokyo 2020 chief Yoshiro comments ‘absolutely inappropriate’
Tokyo, Feb 9 (Reuters): The International Olympic Committee (IOC) said on Tuesday that comments about women made by Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games chief Yoshiro Mori were “absolutely inappropriate”. Mori has come under fire for saying last week that meetings with female participants take a long time, adding that they “get competitive” with each other. He later apologised and retracted his comments while also attempting to justify them, inviting further criticism. “The recent comments of Tokyo 2020 President Mori were absolutely inappropriate and in contradiction to the IOC’s commitments and the reforms of its Olympic Agenda 2020,” the Olympic body said in a statement.
Yoshiro Mori
The Tokyo Games organising committee (TOCOG) will convene a special board meeting as early as Friday as a result of the outcry, broadcaster NHK reported on Tuesday. Following Mori’s remarks, about 440 Games volunteers have quit and local organisers have received more than 5,500
complaints, according to local media. The Tokyo Olympics was postponed last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The IOC, working with local organisers to host the Games in July, did not mention any further action against Mori but said TOCOG also considered its own chief ’s comments as inappropriate “Besides Mr Mori’s apology, the Tokyo 2020 Organising Committee also considers his comment to be inappropriate and has reaffirmed its commitment to gender equality,” the IOC said. “As the leader of the Olympic Movement, we are committed to our mission to encourage and support the promotion of women in sport at all levels and in all structures, as stated in the Olympic Charter.”
Shubman Gill (50) and skipper Virat Kohli then shared a 34-run stand and tried to steady the ship. However, just after reaching his third Test fifty, Gill was bowled by a ripper from Anderson. Vice-captain Ajinkya Rahane once again failed to perform with the bat as he got out in the same over against Anderson, thus leaving India in a precarious situation. Rahane, who had scored just one in the first innings, went back to the dressing room without troubling the scorers. Rishabh Pant, India’s
Ireland tour of Z’bwe postponed Dublin, Feb 9 (IANS): Zimbabwe Cricket and Cricket Ireland have mutually agreed to postpone the forthcoming limited-overs bilateral series due to the ongoing Covid-19 situation in Zimbabwe. Ireland were due to fly to Harare on March 28 and play a three-match T20I series, followed by as many ODIs in April. The postponed ODIs were not part of the ICC World Cup Super League and those fixtures against Zimbabwe are scheduled to be played in Ireland this summer. “We’re obviously disappointed, but to be honest, it is not an unexpected announcement from our Zimbabwean counterparts. We appreciate their efforts and willingness to try and make the tour possible, but in the end the health and safety of players and support staff must be of primary consideration,” Richard Holdsworth, High Performance Director for Cricket Ireland, said in a statement.
batting hero in the first innings, scored 11 off 19 before he became the third scalp of Anderson. Washington Sundar, the next batsman in, also couldn’t stay long and got out for a duck against Dom Bess. Ashwin then faced some blows on his body but made sure that he didn’t give his wicket away as India went into Lunch needing 276 runs with just four wickets in hand. After the lunch break, Ashwin -- after sharing a 54-run partnership with Kohli -- got out after scoring nine runs while attempting a square cut against Leach, leaving India reeling at 171/7. Kohli, who was fighting the lone battle with the lower order, then got out bowled to a Stokes delivery that kept low and disturbed the wood. Shahbaz Nadeem and Jasprit Bumrah got out after scoring 0 and 4 while Ishant Sharma remained not out at 5. The two teams will now face other in the second Test beginning Saturday at the same venue in front of spectators. ISL: ATK Mohun Bagan ease to 2-0 win over Bengaluru FC New Delhi, Feb 9 (Agencies): ATK Mohun Bagan sent out a statement of intent across the Indian Super League (ISL) 2020-21, going a point within current league leaders Mumbai City FC with a solid 2-0 victory over a hapless Bengaluru FC at the Fatorda Stadium on Tuesday. In a first for Bagan this season, two first-half goals signalled the downfall for a beleaguered Bengaluru FC who were punished for their defensive mistakes. Roy Krishna (37’ Pen.) beat Gurpreet Singh Sandhu from the spot before Marcelinho (44’) put the game to rest with a freekick of the highest order, News18 reported. The Mariners stand second with 33 points from 16 games while Bengaluru FC remains 6th with 19 points, 4 points adrift of the top-four chasing pack with one less game to play. It was Bengaluru who looked more confident with the ball in the initial stages but Bagan got things under control. Bagan pressed aggressively, forcing BFC into mistakes. While Bengaluru had more possession, ATKMB attacked better and had more shots at goals. Gupreet was constantly called upon with him keeping Krishna out early on. He came up with another fine

save, getting a hand to Carl McHugh’s fierce shot which should have seen the back of the net. After a series of raids, Bagan were awarded a penalty when Pratik Chaudhari brought down Krishna in the penalty box after the Fijian was set through on goal by Marcelinho. Krishna sent the keeper in the wrong direction to put his side ahead. Habas’ side went two goals ahead just before the break. Once again, BFC conceded from a set-piece. Harmanjot Khabra committed a foul on David Williams just outside the box. Marcelinho’s freekick snuck past Gurpreet, his second goal in three games. BFC continued to dominate possession but lacked attempts on goal. ATKMB continued to find
the right time to pounce on opportunities. Sandesh Jhingan tried a powerful strike which Gurpreet once again kept out. The custodian prevented BFC from losing by a bigger margin. Manvir Singh had a chance when he was set through on the right flank. But with options in the box, Manvir tried for glory only for Gurpreet to make a strong save. Bengaluru had to wait until the 87th minute for their first real chance. Sunil Chhetri managed to get past Jhingan and struck a low shot at goal but Arindam Bhattacharja dived to his right to deny the BFC skipper. Wednesday’s Match Chennaiyin Vs Jamshedpur 7:30 pm

were not enough to beat the San Antonio Spurs. In a thrilling game, the Spurs led by a single point with less than nine seconds on the clock before DeMar DeRozan converted four free throws. The Chicago Bulls’ Zach LaVine scored 35 points but the Washington Wizards’ Bradley Beal
matched that tally as the Wizards edged the game 105-101. Trailing 103-101 with 9.8 seconds left, LaVine missed a contested layup. Beal recovered the rebound, drew a foul and hit two free throws to seal the win. Devin Booker’s 36 points helped the Phoenix Suns to a third win in a row as they saw off the Cleve-
land Cavaliers 119-113. The Charlotte Hornets dominated the Houston Rockets as LaMelo Ball landed a career-best seven three-pointers in a 119-94 win. Luka Doncic scored 26 points as the Dallas Mavericks held off a late rally to defeat the visiting Minnesota Timberwolves 127-122.
Bayern beat Al Ahly; reach Club WC final Inter-ward football tourney in Mkg Doha, Feb 9 (IANS/ AFP): Robert Lewandowski scored twice to help Bayern Munich see off Al Ahly in the last four at the ongoing FIFA Club World Cup here. Last season’s UEFA Champions League winner booked a clash with Tigres UANL of Mexico in the final on Thursday, reports Xinhua news agency. The Egyptian club on Monday set up a solid defense at the beginning of the game. But Lewandowski put the title favourite ahead with a close-range low shot 17 minutes after the break. Marc Roca almost created the European powerhouse’s second goal in the 26th minute, but his shot was denied by Al Ahly’s goalkeeper Elshenawy Mohamed. In the 37th minute, Lewandowski lobbed his rival goalkeeper but the ball drifted high. Bayern could have enlarged its lead but missed chances. ler force Mohamed into a good save before Lewandowski scored the second, heading in from Leroy Sane’s long cross in the 86th minute. After having won the Bundesliga, German Cup, Champions League, and the German and European Super Cups in 2020, the German Bundesliga giant
is seeking a sixth trophy of a major event in one year at the tournament which was delayed from December 2020 amid the Covid-19 pandemic. Bayern won the Club World Cup, and its predecessor the Intercontinental Cup, in 1976, 2001, and 2013. Meanwhile, Robert
Lewandowski says Bayern Munich are eager to claim their sixth title in a year after advancing to the Club World Cup final. “It was a very good match and we’re ready for the final,” Bayern striker Lewandowski told reporters. Bayern are bidding to become only the second
team after Barcelona in 2009 to win all six domestic and international titles up for grabs in one season. The German giants lifted the Bundesliga, German Cup, Champions League, German Super Cup and UEFA Super Cup trophies in 2020. “We want to claim another title — title number six during this season,” Lewandowski added. “This is a World Cup, which is always something special. “I hope we can play even better in the final and that we will have more goalscoring chances.” The European champions ended Ahly’s 32match unbeaten run in all competitions under their South African-born coach Pitso Mosimane. “You understand why they are number one at this point in time in the world and in Europe also,” said Mosimane. “They regained the ball quicker, they pressed us quicker, they’re more experienced. “We could only do something on a break.”
