High Court dismisses NPF plea SAYS, 7 SUSPENDED NPF LEGISLATORS CAN ATTEND ASSEMBLY

Correspondent KOHIMA, FEB 11 (NPN): Kohima Bench of Gauhati High Court on Thursday dismissed two Interlocutory Applications (IA) filed by the NPF-- one of the plea sought the court’s intervention in restraining the seven suspended party legislators from attending the Seventh session of the 13th Nagaland Legislative Assembly session scheduled from February 12, pending a final verdict on a Writ Petition and the other plea filed by the seven MLAs challenging the “maintainability of the writ petition”. The suspended NPF legislators include-- EE Pangteang, Eshak Konyak, Kejong Chang, BS Nganlang Phom, Toyang Chang, N. Thongwang Konyak and CL John. Later speaking to a section of media persons here, Supreme Court lawyer Siddharth Borgohain, representing the petitioners, said the court, after hearing the parties, maintained that there was already another IA (writ petition

DNSU backs JCPI demand to enact RIIN DIMAPUR, FEB 11 (NPN): Dimapur Naga Students’ Union (DNSU) has extended its “unflinching support” to the demand of the Joint Committee for Prevention of Illegal Immigrants (JCPI) for tabling the Banuo commission report on Register of Indigenous Inhabitants of Nagaland (RIIN) and enacting it into an Act in the ensuing assembly session scheduled from February 12, 2021. DNSU through its media cell also supported the demand to regulate registration of indigenous citizens of Nagaland inclusive of Dimapur district with December 1, 1963 as cut-off year. Asserting that the state was “polluted with influx of illegal Immigrants and the citizens have lost its patience”, the union has appealed to the state government “to stop refusing and confusing its people and to put more effort”. It affirmed that the RIIN must, therefore, be implemented without any delay. Failure on the part of the government to comply with the genuine plea of the citizens, the union said it was “ever ready” to extend its full support with any democratic protest of the JCPI.

(C)/95/2020) relating to disqualification of the seven NPF legislators that was in pendency stage. Hence, he said, the court ruled that there was no merit in passing a judgement to restrain the seven suspended legislators from attending the NLA session. The single judge bench of Songkhupchung Serto in its judgment on Thursday said: “The petition herein is devoid of all such ingredients therefore, it cannot be entertained. As such, it is rejected and dismissed.” In view of the conclusion arrived at, the court had passed the order to let the earlier Writ Petition to be listed after a week for all the parties to complete their pleadings. It may be mentioned that the NPF on February 1 stated that since the disqualification case was being delayed before the session, it submitted its prayer before the Court to restrain the seven legislators from entering the Assembly till the disposal of the writ petition as “the purpose of the 10th Schedule is

being defeated by dilatory means.” NPF had filed a petition in the high court for disqualification of the seven NPF legislators against the backdrop of inordinate delay by the Speaker. It may be recalled that the seven MLAs had been suspended from the party’s membership in April 2019 for defying the NPF’s decision to support the Congress candidate K.L. Chishi in the 2019 Lok Sabha polls. Subsequently, the NPF Disciplinary Action Committee (DAC) served a show cause notice on the seven legislators followed by their suspensions from the primary and active membership of the party. Later the NPF filed a petition with the office of the Speaker NLA seeking disqualification against the MLAs on April 24, 2019. In March 2020, Gauhati High Court Kohima Bench had directed the speaker to dispose the disqualification petition against the MLAs within three weeks. The NPF

again approached the High Court when no action was forthcoming. In response, the court had on June 2, 2020 directed the speaker to conclude the disqualification proceedings against seven NPF legislators and pass appropriate orders within six weeks with effect from June 2, 2020. It may be recalled that the Speaker Sharingain Longkumer on July 14, 2020 had dismissed the petition of the NPF which sought the disqualification of seven rebel MLAs, citing the reason that the respondents were not liable to be disqualified under Para 2 (1) (a) of the 10th Schedule of the constitution. Earlier this week, Borgohain had expressed dismay at the speaker for having being kept the decision pending for almost 15 months without looking at the evidence provided on July 14, 2020. Borgohain said his client then went ahead and filed a writ petition challenging the speaker’s judgment.

According to a price notification of state-owned OMCs, petrol price was increased by 25 paise per litre and diesel by 30 paise a litre. This took petrol price to an alltime high of Rs 87.85 a litre in Delhi and to Rs 94.36 in Mumbai. Diesel rates rose to Rs 78.03 per litre in the national capital and to an all-time high of Rs 84.94 in Mumbai. After Thursday’s rate revision, petrol price in Dimapur breached Rs.90 mark as the price increased to Rs.90.26 per litre while diesel price

soared to Rs.80.94 per litre. In the state capital Kohima, prices of petrol and diesel rose to Rs.91.18 per litre and Rs.81.67 per litre respectively. Rates vary from state to state depending on the local incidence of taxation (VAT) and freight. In three days, prices have gone up by 90 paise per litre each. Oil Minister Dharmendra Pradhan on Wednesday had told Parliament that the government is not considering a reduction in excise duty to cool rates from their record highs. Rates have risen as international oil prices touched USD 61 per barrel for the first time in more than a year on improving demand outlook amid the global rollout of COVID-19 vaccines, he had said. Central and state taxes make up for over 61 per cent of the retail selling price of petrol and about 56 per cent of diesel. Retail petrol rates have risen by Rs 18.26 per litre since mid-March 2020 after the government raised taxes by a record margin to mop up gains arising from fall in international oil prices. Diesel rates have gone up by Rs 15.74.

Farmer unions to hold ‘kisan mahapanchayats NEW DELHI, FEB 11 (PTI): Samkyukta Kisan Morcha, an umbrella body of protesting farmer unions, on Thursday announced that ‘kisan mahapanchayats’ will be organised across the country in the coming days against the Centre’s three agri laws. In a statement, SKM said that its teams are planning the programmes of the state-wise mahapanchayats. Tax at check gate:

Kohima police order probe

DIMAPUR, FEB 11 (NPN): A day after the Nagaland Timber Traders’ Union (NTTU) alleged collection of tax from a timber-laden truck at Peducha on February 9 by police personnel, the Kohima police have ordered an enquiry into the allegation. In a press note, Sr. Superintendent of Police Kohima stated if any of its personnel found guilty suitable action would be initiated against the erring personnel. the COVID vaccine. The facts were shared by State immunisation officer, Universal Immunisation Programme (UIP), Dr Ritu Thurr during a review meeting of Nagaland State Task Force held at the directorate of health & family welfare (H&FW) in Kohima on Thursday to assess the progress of the first and second phase of the COVID-19 vaccination drive in the State. Thurr shared a detailed report on the progress of the first and second phase of the ongoing COVID-19 vaccination drive that is scheduled to conclude in nine days time at the meeting, which was chaired by H&FW principal secretary Amardeep Singh Bhatia. Several issues related to the overall low coverage percentage in the State were brought out and discussed in detail. As the vaccine

can only be administered to those who volunteer, the H&FW department is working hard to sensitise the people regarding the safety of the COVID-19 vaccine. The State Task Force discussed in detail the steps required to be undertaken to tackle the problem of low coverage percentage and make sure that the number of vaccines administered increases rapidly in the remaining nine days before conclusion of phase one and two of the vaccination drive. Other departments like the social welfare, rural development and directorate of information & public relations promised to aid the H&FW department in sensitising the general public regarding the safety of the vaccine and also provide logistical support, as and when the need arises, to ensure that a majority,

Countries curb diplomatic ties, weigh sanctions on Myanmar SEOUL, FEB 11 (AP): A growing number of governments are curbing diplomatic ties with Myanmar and increasing economic pressure on its military over the coup last week that erased the fragile democratic progress in the long-oppressed Southeast Asian nation. President Joe Biden said he has approved an executive order that will prevent Myanmar’s generals from accessing USD 1 billion in assets in the United States, and promised more measures. The US was among many Western governments that lifted most sanctions in the past decade to encourage democratic transition as Myanmar’s military rulers were taking gradual steps toward civilian rule changes that proved temporary with the ousting of the elected government and detentions of Nobel Prize laureate Aung San Suu Kyi and others. One of the strongest reactions came from New Zealand, which has suspended all military and highlevel political contact with the country and pledged to block any aid that could go to its military government

or benefit its leaders. It also placed a travel ban on Myanmar’s new military rulers. “We do not recognise the legitimacy of the military-led government and we call on the military to immediately release all detained political leaders and restore civilian rule,” Foreign Minister Nanaia Mahuta said Tuesday. In Washington, Biden said his actions were aimed at freezing US assets that benefit Myanmar’s military leaders while maintaining support for health care programmes, civil society groups and other areas. The U.S. already has sanctions in place

against some Myanmar military leaders over the killings and persecution of minority Rohingya Muslims. In Brussels, EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell said European foreign ministers will meet February 22 to review the 27-nation bloc’s relations with Myanmar and explore ways to increase economic pressure. Its options could include sanctions targeting individuals and businesses owned by Myanmar’s military as well as cuts in development assistance. Since 2014, the EU has granted Myanmar almost 700 million euros ($850 million).

NH-29 stretch to reopen from today DIMAPUR, FEB 11 (NPN): National Highway-29 stretch would finally be opened for two-way traffic between 6 a.m. and 10 a.m., and 2 p.m. and 5 p.m. from Friday. The move follows governor RN Ravi’s review of the ongoing traffic restrictions on the highway on Thursday. After elaborate deliberations and due regard to the safety needs of commuters, it was decided that total restriction on traffic was no longer required and hence the highway would be opened for the commuters a press note through PRO Raj Bhavan stated. While NHIDCL will ensure that the contractors place enough resources on the ground and take sufficient measures to stabilise the rocks and clear the debris without delay, the Dimapur district administration will review the situation after one week for further easing of traffic. Earlier, the governor expressed his deep concern

State registers low COVID vaccine coverage DIMAPUR, FEB 11 (NPN): Nagaland’s COVID vaccination drive has been far from satisfactory as only 31% of the 21,549 registered healthcare workers could be vaccinated in the first phase and a mere 5% of the 51,718 registered frontline workers could be vaccinated in the second phase, a DIPR report stated. The low vaccination percentage has been largely attributed to the reluctance on the part of a majority of the healthcare and frontline workers to take the vaccine for fear of side effects. However, so far, out of 8,948 persons vaccinated in the State, there has been no instance of beneficiaries suffering from serious medical side effects, apart from few cases of mild fever and pain in the injected area, which has been termed as normal for all vaccines and not just

if not all, healthcare and frontline workers receive the vaccine. Several issues and problems faced by different district immunisation officers regarding the vaccination drive in their respective districts were also discussed at length during the meeting and the State Task Force collectively vowed to address the issues at the earliest and with utmost urgency.

10,154 inoculated

State Health department has informed that total vaccinated beneficiaries in the state reached 10,154 on Thursday. In a press release, state immunization officer (UIP) Dr. RituThurr stated that 3,480 frontline workers and 6674 health care workers have been vaccinated across the state in a total of 243 sessions till date.

over untold hardships to the public due to continuing traffic restrictions on the highway. He also conveyed his displeasure to the contractors for reckless rock blasting, which was the cause of the heavy rock slide, while advising the State government to explore legal actions and hold the erring contractors accountable for their reckless acts. The review meeting was attended by ADGP and special secretary (home) SR Saravanan, PWD engineerin-chief Limatongdang Jamir, PWD chief engineer (NH) Kezha Theünuo, DC Dimapur Rajesh S, commissioner of police Dimapur Rothihu Tetseo and NHIDCL executive director (P) MS Deol. In an order, DC Dimapur Thursday stated that light vehicles will be allowed to ply from 6 a.m. to 10 a.m. and heavy vehicles from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Asserting that it has been closely observing the causes that led to mudslides and rockslides along the NH-29 stretch from Patkai Bridge to Kukidolong, the Western Sumi Youth Front (WSYF) urged the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited to strictly follow all safety measures during the four-lane road construction. WSYF through its media cell said that the February 2 rockslide incident where several vehicles were damaged, three persons injured and many other similar incidents in the past could have been avoided if the responsible authorities particularly NHIDCL had taken proper safety measures while undertaking earth cutting and blasting activities. WSYF said the major cause of mudslides and rockslides was due to steep cutting instead of adopting the step cutting and slope cutting method. While the contractors carry out works as specified and instructed, WSYF said the responsibility of the disasters should be owned by NHIDCL, which was specifying to the contractors regarding the methodology (Cont’d on p-8) and style of works.

NH-129A issue: WSYF, WSSU support WSH

D I M A P U R : We s t e r n Sumi Youth Front (WSYF) and Western Sumi Students’ Union (WSSU) have extended support to the objection raised by Western Sumi Hoho (WSH) regarding the new alignment of NH-129A undertaken by NHIDCL. Stating that new alignments were generally made to cut the distance, WSYF has, however, said that new alignment of NH-129A was longer in distance by 10 km, which it described as “highly questionable.” Further, the front alleged that the new alignment was also aimed at depriving the villages located at the old route of their livelihood. WSYF said there was frequent vehicular restrictions from Patkai Bridge to Kukidolong owing to the ongoing road works and the public had been given an alternative route to travel Shokhuvi-RazapheMhaikam-Pimla-Jhornapani. However, it said that the alternative route was in a deplorable condition. WSYF has, therefore, appealed to the government to facilitate decent motorable road as it was the

alternative road provided by the government. WSSU: Western Sumi Students Union (WSSU) extended its support to We s t e r n S u m i H o h o ’s (WSH) stand on the objection to new alignment of NH-129A, undertaken by National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Ltd (NHIDCL). Amit Shah meets KochRajbongshi leader in Assam Package for community likely after polls CHIRANG, FEB 11 (PTI): Setting sights on assembly polls, Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Thursday visited the residence of Ananta Roy, the chief of Greater Coochbehar Peoples’ Association (GCPA), in Assam’s Chirang district, and reportedly discussed matters related to the welfare of the Koch-Rajbongshi community. Roy, who calls himself a descendant of the Coochbehar royal family in West Bengal, told mediapersons that the Union home minister held talks with him on the long-pending demands of his community that has a substantial population in lower Assam and the neighbouring state. He also said that Shah has given assurance that a “package” would be announced for the Koch-Rajbonghshis after state elections. “All our pending demands were discussed at the meeting, and now I can only say that good days are ahead for the Koch-Rajbongshi community,” Roy said. Shah, who arrived in Guwahati on Wednesday night, was accompanied by BJP national general secre-

Amit Shah tary Kailash Vijayvargiya, North East Democratic Alliance (NEDA) convenor Himanta Biswa Sarma and Assam BJP president Ranjeet Dass during his visit to Roy’s residence at Chatipur here. Asked if talks were held on the contentious National Register of Citizens (NRC) exercise and the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), Roy said no such matter was discussed as the Union home ministry has already declared the Koch- Rajbongshis as “aboriginals”. “We belong to this land... so how can we be outsiders? Besides, we have been declared aboriginals by the home ministry,” he said. The Koch-Rajbongshis along with five other communities in Assam has long been demanding the Scheduled Tribe (ST) status. To a query if talks progressed on that front, Roy said that a committee is looking into the matter, and

refused to give any further detail. Roy also clarified that “his outfit, which enjoys the support of 18.50 lakh members, is already a part of the NDA”, when enquired if an alliance with the BJP was in the offing, ahead of the assembly polls in Assam and Bengal. He also said that he heads another group – Narayani Sena - which has over one lakh volunteers. T h e G C PA l e a d e r further stated that a skill development training centre, named after Koch Commander-in- Chief Bir Chilarai, would be set up in Assam. He urged the people of his community to be patient as “we have been assured that all our demands will be fulfilled in due course of time. I cannot say anything more than this”. Roy also hoped that the Bengal government would withdraw various cases filed against him in the neighbouring state, but refused to give more information in the matter. According to the GCPA chief, Shah was “served a traditional fare, consisting of sweetmeats ‘pithas and tiler laru’, and he enjoyed the meal, and asked for more”. Roy said that he had invited the Union minister to his residence during one of his trips to Delhi.

Correspondent IMPHAL, Feb 11: All Manipur Christian Organization (AMCO) on Thursday appealed to the Manipur government to drop its plans of removing churches constructed at public places in and around Imphal. AMCO alleged that none of the Churches across the state were included when the Manipur government regularized 188 worshiping places constructed at public places. Addressing a press conference here, AMCO president Rev Prim Vaiphei said that as none of the churches were included in the list of the worshiping places, there were apprehensions of churches being removed in and around Imphal. He said that there are around 44 churches in and around Imphal. Of these, 14 each are in Lamphel and Langol areas, six in Game Village area, nine in Tribal Colony and one in Leimakhong area. Most of these churches were constructed prior to the Supreme Court guideline/direction with cut-off date as October 29, 2009 for regularisation of existing unauthorized construction in the name of temple, church, mosque or gurudwara among others at public parks and other public places, he claimed. Va i p h e i p r o t e s t e d

against the alleged government’s favouritism of religion saying that it was a step-motherly treatment towards Christians in the state. Despite repeated requests to regularise the churches, the state government failed to hear the demands of the Christians. He pointed out that the state government had already regularised a total of 188 worshiping places of different religions and at the same time served eviction notices to churches. As such, there were always apprehensions among Christians of churches being demolished at any time. He claimed that churches in the state have been playing a big role in spreading the message of living together in peace and harmony among different communities living in the state. “This is not justice on the part of the governance. There is no justice in this land. Governance partiality to religion will bring no good result,” he said. Meanwhile, he appealed to the Christian community in the state to perform prayers in their respective churches on coming Sunday to protect the churches from demolition and prevent any untoward consequences that would be coming up if the government goes ahead with its plan.

Akhil Gogoi New Delhi, Feb 11 (PTI): The Supreme Court denied bail on Thursday to activist Akhil Gogoi, who is lodged in jail for his alleged role in the violent anti-CAA protests in Assam. A bench of justices N V Ramana, Surya Kant and Aniruddha Bose dismissed Gogoi’s bail plea, saying, “We will not consider the petition at this stage.” The bench, however, told advocate Runamoni Bhuyan that the petitioner may approach the top court for bail once the trial starts. Gogoi has challenged a January 7 order the Gauhati High Court, which rejected his bail plea in a case related to his alleged role in the violent protests against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) lodged by the National Investigation Agency (NIA). On 2 October 2020, Gogoi launched a new political party Raijor Dal with the help of 70 indigenous organisations of Assam.

Agartala, Feb 11 (PTI): The High Court of Tripura has served a notice to the state government to respond to a writ petition filed by the terminated teachers after the Tripura Police denied them permission to resume their sit-in demonstration in front of Agartala City Centre from February 3. Justice S Talapatra served the notice on Wednesday asking the state government to respond within March 1, counsel for the terminated teachers, Purushottam Roy Barman told reporters. Roy Barman, said it is the fundamental right of the citizens of India to hold peaceful demonstrations which was allegedly violated by the police. “Police denied permis-

sion to the teachers on law and order situation grounds. The teachers were peacefully demonstrating demanding reinstatement in their jobs, since December 7 last year, but their tents were forcibly dismantled by imposing section 144 on January 27 this year, when the teachers were sleeping. It is illegal,” Roy Barman told reporters. “The police if required can give some conditions, but they cannot stop a peaceful protest or demonstration,” he said. Over 10,000 government school teachers were sacked last year, in accordance with a 2014 high court order, which said that their recruitment process was a faulty one. The Supreme Court later upheld the verdict.

Dear loving ICHI, Heyito. It’s wonderful being able to share such a special birthday with you. Ever since I was a child, I’ve been hearing endless stories about you. Today, that legend from the stories turns 80! Ready to conquer more adventures. You have just twice my age. Being twice as old as a 40years old means that you’re twice as smart, twice as clever and twice as ... With your body slowly letting you down, you must always remember that the only thing that matters is; how you trained your SOUL so that you can leave back a legacy worth remembering. JSUN alleges encroachment of govt land DIMAPUR: Alleging rampant encroachment of government land in various governmental offices and establishment under Jalukie sub-division, the Jalukie Students’ Union Nagaland (JSUN) has cautioned that “any negligence or connivance on the part of the government officials” would not be tolerated. In a press release, JSUN president, Agumbe Nring and general secretary, Indeu Heikha, reiterated union’s resolution adopted at its executive meet-

ing on January 25, 2021, to tackle the issues of alleged encroachment and instruct the respective departments and responsible stakeholders to remain vigilant and regularly check for any such activities. The union has warned individuals or group found encroaching, assimilation of a portion of land into private holding by means of illicit fencing, and illegally constructing structures within the demarcated boundary of the “donated” government

land would be doing so at their own risk. Further, JSUN has resolved to initiate appropriate action and affirmed that those responsible would be dealt with sternly. It also requested right thinking citizens to refrain “refrain from buying of plot permit issued by some unscrupulous and corrupted officials and encroachers”. It has urged all responsible to instead maintain and safeguard the government land.

Test for ‘unity road’

N

agaland Foot Hill Road Coordination Committee has been fully committed to the completion of the 256 kilometer project that was abandoned by the North Eastern Council(NEC) in 1974. The foothill road is a dream project because it seeks to cut short the travel time and distance from Dimapur –the trade and commerce centre of Nagaland-with Mokokchung, Longleng, Tuensang, Wokha, Zunheboto and Kiphire. The foothill road project is undoubtedly the most important and vital link that connects so many districts. Several apex Naga tribe organisations have been appealing with the state government to do everything within its means to ensure that the dream project comes through. The All the eleven Ao legislators, ten from Mokokchung and one from Dimapur, have also taken up the matter with utmost seriousness by meeting with the chief minister and impressing upon him the need to enable the early completion of the road. The project will also provide immense boost to trade and commerce by linking six districts and thus, its role as a catalyst for economic progress cannot be ignored. However, one of the most crucial aspect that makes the foothill road project is the fact that once completed, it will also help each and unhindered movement of people and goods from one part of Nagaland to another without being held ransom to bandhs or blockades imposed by spate of organisations in Assam. NFHRCC held a joint meeting with apex tribe hohos and CSOs at Liphayan on February 10 where it reaffirmed the February 5 resolution to complete the road within 2021. According to the NFHRCC so far 70.66% of the works have been completed. On the other hand, the Lotha Hoho had recently disclosed that it had filed a PIL in court over the issue of non-completion of the vital bridge linking with the road where 75% of money was paid for only 50% of work so far done as on January. This issue needs to be addressed at the earliest before the onset of monsoon. The current dry months till April is only about two months away. The earlier the road is complete, the better for the state and its people. In order to provide necessary funding for early completion, the state government should leave no stone unturned to impress upon the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) to do the needful to ensure that the road project is taken up on priority. However, apparently, the project has been excluded among priority roads recently announced by the MoRTH. This newspaper had earlier emphasised that the state government should accord top priority to the foothill road by taking it up with utmost urgency with the government of India for inclusion as a ‘must priority project’. There are many other projects that are less important in comparison with the road project. The winter session of the Nagaland Legislative Assembly beginning from February 12 should be an opportunity for the house to discuss on the matter and resolve to take it as state priority. If such an important link also described as the umbilical cord or ‘unity road’ connecting one half of the state with another cannot merit consideration by the state government as the state’s top priority project, then there is nothing more that can be said.

DailyDevotion Is Your Mind Stayed on God? You will keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on You, because he trusts in You. —Isaiah 26:3 Is your mind stayed on God or is it starved? Starvation of the mind, caused by neglect, is one of the chief sources of exhaustion and weakness in a servant’s life. If you have never used your mind to place yourself before God, begin to do it now. There is no reason to wait for God to come to you. You must turn your thoughts and your eyes away from the face of idols and look to Him and be saved (see Isaiah 45:22). Your mind is the greatest gift God has given you and it ought to be devoted entirely to Him. You should seek to be “bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ…” (2 Corinthians 10:5). This will be one of the greatest assets of your faith when a time of trial comes, because then your faith and the Spirit of God will work together. When you have thoughts and ideas that are worthy of credit to God, learn to compare and associate them with all that happens in nature— the rising and the setting of the sun, the shining of the moon and the stars, and the changing of the seasons. You will begin to see that your thoughts are from God as well, and your mind will no longer be at the mercy of your impulsive thinking, but will always be used in service to God. “We have sinned with our fathers…[and]… did not remember…” (Psalm 106:6-7). Then prod your memory and wake up immediately. Don’t say to yourself, “But God is not talking to me right now.” He ought to be. Remember whose you are and whom you serve. Encourage yourself to remember, and your affection for God will increase tenfold. Your mind will no longer be starved, but will be quick and enthusiastic, and your hope will be inexpressibly bright.

Budget 2021: Capturing the Pulse of the Nation

ast week, the Budget 2021 was tabled in the parliament under extra ordinary circumstances. The new virus posed a serious challenge to our social and economic order. It tested the resilience of our health care systems, economy, governance, social structures and above all - our ability as a Nation, to react to such crisis situation. It is often said that “crisis situations are opportunities to either advance, or stay where you are”. Here, I would like to appreciate the vision of our Prime Minister Sh. Narendra Modi, who realized the importance of being self reliant in the fast evolving ‘post COVID world order’ and immediately set out a road map for turning India into AtmaNirbhar Bharat. The budget 2021 is an expression of this vision. With contraction in the economy, additional spending on welfare, widening fiscal deficit, there were twin challenges to pull back the economy to a ‘V’ shaped recovery and to secure the ‘livelihood of people’. However, the Finance Minister has come up with a brilliant budget that shall prove to be a ‘V’accine

T

for our economy. The gover nment, through Budget 2021, has allayed fears of farmers. The introduction of agriculture infrastructure and development cess, increase in agriculture credit to the tune of Rs 16.5 lakh crores and allocation of infrastructure fund for augmenting infrastructure of APMCs echoes government’s intentions aimed at welfare of farmers. The centre’s promise for MSP which is 1.5 times of production cost, across all commodities, has been reconfirmed and amplified in Prime Minister’s own words at the floor of the house, “MSP tha, MSP haiaur MSP rahega” Government has given a major push to infrastructure investment and placed its bets on multiplier effects of infrastructure spending to propel growth and employment. Capital expenditure has been significantly increased in BE 2021-22 with allocation of Rs 5.54 lakh crores which is 34.5% more than the BE 2020-21. Setting up of Development Financial Institution with an outlay of Rs 20,000 crores, expansion of National Infrastructure Pipeline and creation of National Moneti-

zation pipeline will go a long way in augmenting resources for upcoming projects. Ministry of Road Transport and highways has received allocation of Rs 1,17,000 crores including capital expenditure of Rs 1,08,000 crores, the highest ever. This sector has witnessed unprecedented growth over the last few years and is expected to grow further with the announcement of 3 new economic corridors in states of Tamil Nadu, Kerala, West Bengal and Assam with an investment of around 2,24,000 crores. It is heartening to note that the Government has prepared a National Rail Plan 2030 to prepare what the FM in her speech mentioned as “Future ready’ railway system. Apart from completing the western and eastern dedicated freight corridor projects by 2022, the government has proposed new freight corridor projects. This shall enable seamless freight transport and bring down the logistics cost for our Industry. India is witnessing an accelerated growth in urban population. We need to improve upon existing urban infrastructure, comprehensively plan new facili-

‘His manifest presence’

he priority of God’s presence has been lost in the modern church. We are like bakeries that are open, but have no bread. Furthermore, we are not interested in selling bread. We just like the chit-chat that goes on around cold ovens and empty shelves. Do we even know whether he is here or not, and if he is here, what he is doing? Where he is going? Or are we just too pre-occupied with sweeping out imaginary crumbs from bakeries with no bread? On the day Jesus made what we call his triumphant entry into Jerusalem on the back of a little donkey, his path through the city probably led him right past the entrance to the temple of Herod. We believe the reason, the Pharisees were upset at the parade in John 12 is because, it disturbed their religious services inside the temple. It seems they were complaining, what is all this going on? You are disturbing the high priest; don’t you know what we are doing? We are having a very important prayer service inside. Do you know what we are praying for? We are praying for the Messiah to come; and you have the audacity to have this noisy parade and disturb us? Who is in charge of this unruly mob anyway? “Oh, do you see the guy on the little donkey?”They missed the hour of their visitation. He was in the town and they did not know it. The Messiah passed right by their door while they were inside praying for him to come. The problem was that, he did not come in the manner in which they expected him to come. They did not recognise him. Had Jesus come on the back of a prancing white stallion, or in a Royal chariot of gold with phalanx of soldiers ahead of him, the pharisees and priests would have said, “That might be him”. Unfortunately, they were more interested in seeing the Messiah throw off the joke of Roman bondage than in throwing off the spiritual bondage that had become a blight on their land and people. We need to decide that whatever it takes and wherever it comes from, we must have him. And he wants to come on his terms, not ours. Until then, the absence of “awesomeness” Will hunt the church. We can be inside praying for him to come while he passes by outside. Worse than that, the “insiders” Miss him while the “outsiders” March with him. Consider the literal meaning of the Hebrew name of their hometown; Bethlehem means “house of bread”. The reason they left the house of bread is that there was no bread in the house. It is simple, why people leave churches - there is no bread. Bread was part of the temple practices as well; it was proof of his presence - the showbread, the bread of presence. Bread has always been the one thing historically that was an indicator of his presence. We find in the Old Testament that bread in the form of the showbread was in the Holy Place. It was a heavenly symbol of God himself. Naomi and her husband and two sons left home and moved to Moab because there

was a famine in Bethlehem. Naomi and her family have something or totally avoid our churches today left that place and went somewhere else to try to find bread. They are just trying to get by; they are just trying to survive because the church has failed them. They looked, or their parents and friends looked and reported, and the spiritual cupboard was bare. There was no presence in the pantry; just empty shelves and offices full of recipes for bread. But the oven was cold and dusty. We have falsely advertised and hyped - up our claims that there is bread in our house. But when the hungry come, all they can do is scrounge through the carpet for a few crumbs of yesteryears revivals. We talk grandly about where he has been and what he has done, but we can say very little about what he is doing among us today. That is not God’s fault; it is ours. We have only remnants of what used to be- a residue of fading glory. We camouflage our emptiness like the priesthood in Jesus day keep the veil in place with no ark of the covenant behind it. God may have to pierce the veil of our flesh to reveal our (the churches) inner emptiness also. It is pride problem - we point with pride to where he has been (protecting the temple tradition) while we deny the obviously apparent glory of the Son of God. The religious spirit of Jesus day did not want to populate to realise that there was no glory behind their veil. Jesus presence presented problems. Religious spirit must preserve where he has been at the expense of where he is! But a man with an experience is never at the mercy of a man with only an argument. “All I know is, I was blind but now I see!” (See John 9:25). If we can lead people into the manifest presence of God, all false theological houses of cards will tumble down. Yet we wonder why people hardly bow their heads when they come in our gatherings because it is just not there sufficiently enough to register on our gauges. The presence of the Holy Spirit is the keystone of all our hopes. Invite the Holy Spirit to lead your decisions and emotions today! This in turn, creates another problem. When people get just a little touch of God mixed with a lot of something that is not got, it inoculates them against the real thing. Once they have been inoculated by crumble of God’s presence, then when we say, God really is here; the problem is that God was there all right, but not enough of him! There was not undeniable, overwhelming sense of him manifest presence. People have come to the house of bread, time and again only to find there was simply too much of man and too little of God there. The Almighty one is out to restore the sense of his awesome manifest presence in our lives and places of worship. Over and over we talk about the glory of God covering the earth, but how is it going to flow through the streets of our cities if it cannot even flow down the aisles of our churches? It is got to start

ties and create job avenues for this burgeoning urban population. In Budget 2021, the Government has announced a new scheme for augmentation of public bus transport services, through PPP mode, with an outlay of 18,000 crores. Metro rail and RRTS network is being further strengthened to cover Tier -2 cities and periphery of Tier-1 cities. A Jal Jeevan mission (Urban) has been announced to provide piped water supply to 4,378 Urban local bodies with an outlay of Rs 2.87 crores over the next 5 years. This announcement rides on the glorious success of JJM (rural) through which 3.04 crore rural households have been provided tap water in an years time, against 3.23 crore rural households that were provided piped water supply since independence, till 2019. I have, in my earlier writings, termed JJM as a social revolution since the outcome of this scheme is not just limited to providing tap water to people. It creates demand for skilled workforce like pipe fitters, plumbers, electricians, pump operator etc. It mandates participation of women in Panisamitis for planning

somewhere, and it is not going to start out there. It must start in here! It must start at the temple. If God’s glory cannot flow through the aisles of the church because of seducing spirit and manipulating men, then God will have to turn somewhere else as he did the day Jesus rode past the house of bread (temple) in Jerusalem on a donkey. If there is no bread in the house, then do not blame the hungry for not going there. When Bethlehem, the house of bread, is empty, people are forced to look elsewhere for the bread of life. Supernatural things like that will happen to you too, but it only comes one way. It only comes when the priest and the ministers weep between the porch and the altar and cry out to Jesus Christ, “Spare the people!” There is no shortcut to revival or coming of his presence. God’s glory only comes when repentance and brokenness drive you to your knees, because his presence requires purity. Only dead men see God’s face. We cannot expect others to repent at that depth if you and I are not willing to continually walk in that level of repentance. The world is tired of hearing pompous churches preaching popular sermons from behind their elevated pulpits. What right do we have to tell everybody else to repent when there are such glaring problems in our own church? Hypocrisy has never been in style in God’s church, but we have made it the main attraction in our version of church. What we need to do is come clean and confess, “Yes we have some problems. Yes I have some problems too. But I am repenting of my sin right now. Is there anybody here who wants to join me while I repent?” I think we will all be surprised at the number of people who will start crawling out from the crevices of society when they see the church repenting! Once again, it all goes back to our most serious problem - we don’t have bread of his presence. Our churches are filled with “Career prodigals” Who love their father’s things more than their father. We come to the family dinner table not to ask for more of the father, but to beg and persuade him to give us all things in his house that he promised are rightfully ours. We open the book and lick our lips and say, “I want all the gifts, I want the best portion, the full blessing; I want all that belongs to me.” Ironically, it was the father’s blessing that actually financed the prodigal son’s trip a way from the father’s face! And it was the son’s new revelation of his poverty of heart that propelled him back into his father’s arms. Sometimes we use the very blessings that God gives us to finance our journey away from the centrality of Christ. It is very important that we return back to ground zero, to the ultimate eternal goal of abiding with the Father in intimate communion. Salvation is a free gift, but God’s glory will cost us everything. Y.L. Jami IAS (Retd) Kushiabill, Dimapur Reader’s note: Articles or letters published in any of the columns do not reflect the view

and monitoring village water supply schemes hence empowering them. It gives priority to weaker sections of society hence ensuring inclusion and equality. Talking about Health sector, the FM announced a whopping increase of 137% in the budgetary outlay. A new scheme – PM Atma Nirbhar Swasth Bharat Yojana with an outlay of Rs 64,180 crores over the next 6 years has been announced. Government has announced Mission Poshan 2.0 and Urban Swchch Bharat Mission 2.0 that shall have significant impact on health parameters. Setting up of 100 new Sainik Schools, 750 new eklavya model residential schools in tribal areas and quality up-gradation of 15,000 existing schools as per New Education Policy, shall improve access to quality education for the younger generation. The revamping of Post Matric Scholarship Scheme for SCs with an outlay of Rs 35,000 crores over the next 5 years is a welcome step. It shall benefit over 4 crore SC students and help improve the Gross Enrolment Ratio (Higher education) by preventing dropouts. In addition to

it, the overall allocation to welfare schemes for SCs, across Ministries, has been increased to Rs 1,26,259 crores from Rs 83,256 crores that is almost by 51%. Also, special care has been taken of our elderly citizens by giving them exemption from filing tax return in case their source of income is only pension and interest. The Budget, therefore, is symbolic of Modi Government’s agenda of ” Sabka Saath Sabka Vikas” Overall, the budget has been well received and markets have reacted positively towards it. Our Finance Minister has walked a tight rope of fiscal prudence and tabled a budget which maintains a fine balance between capital expenditure to trigger economic growth and public spending to secure welfare and livelihood of people. This was the need of the hour and shall lay a strong foundation for Atma Nirbhar Bharat in the times to come. Therefore, I term it as a budget – that captures the pulse of the Nation. How social media has changed the way we see ourselves

A

s social media becomes all-pervasive, it has had a significant impact on society. Almost everybody is on social media today. As more people join Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, YouTube, and other networking sites, there is far greater sharing of information, content, thoughts and ideas than ever before. Social media helps build online communities, connect audiences, and generate revenue. However, the downside to these activities is the desire to stay in the spotlight. This can consequently lead to low self-esteem and create a negative perception of one’s “body image”. Body image is how people think about their appearance and how they perceive themselves. A negative body image harms individuals who are affected by the impractical, often absurd, manner in which they view themselves. The assumption that a person must always look good on social media has become a disorder in itself. There is a strong connection between social media and body image issues. While, on the one hand, social media has opened up many avenues for networking, it has brought with it, the pressure to look good, get thousands of likes and positive comments on various platforms. This can affect the mental health of many young people. Validation from the online community has become something of an addiction. Everyone likes to be complimented on their looks. But when this happens on social media, its effect is often amplified. People often seek approval and appreciation from strangers who they meet online. But if, despite their best efforts, the comments they receive are negative, it can lead to sadness and depression. A majority of those who have body image issues are people who compare their pictures with those posted by others. If they perceive that they fall short, they feel dejected. Low self-esteem has become something of a

norm among social media users and can be detrimental to their mental well-being. According to the Mental Health Foundation, low self-esteem affects people of all ages, not just the young. They get affected by things such as weight issues, which then can be a catalyst that forces them into depression and alcohol or substance abuse. Similar findings were revealed in a poll of 4,505 adults by YouGov in the United Kingdom. The study revealed that 57% of people aged 18 to 24 years admitted to having anxiety over their body image, compared with 30% in the age group of 45 to 54 years, and 20% for those over the age of 55. Global statistics show that at least 91% of women are not happy with how they look and end up following trendy diets to achieve an “ideal body”. These statistics apply across race, marital status, gender and age. Almost half of the population that uses social media has admitted to having had low self-esteem. Negative body image and low self-esteem can lead to anxiety, nervousness, depression, jealousy, eating disorders, alcohol abuse, and living in a makebelieve world where social media perfection has a disproportionate influence on people. However, with some effort, society can overcome body image issues. There should be a culture of inclusivity and the promotion of a positive body image. Parents should be more careful and look for signs of negative body image among children and seek timely help. Parents can help their children by promoting a positive body image, making their children understand the implications of unnecessary social media use. They can seek help from trained counsellors and psychiatrists. Social media is both a blessing and a curse. It is up to us how we use it. Social Media Negative Influence on Traditional Media Sir,

In the new age of constant technology and the intense use of social media and internet, I became concerned of a very important and relevant topic that is encroaching into society. However citizen journalists are ruling the news world now. People can post anything they want and in the blinks of an eye thousands of people can see it. These citizen journalistshave not been trained properly and those post can be edited to say basically anything that the ‘journalist’ want them to say. Fake news has become a problem and social media has only exasperated that problem. That can lead to problems. Member of society, citizen must educate themselves so that they can properly decipher what news has an agenda because even traditional news media now is starting to act and flow the news media. visit a user profile you can see it anyway,” Radhakrishna said in a tweet. Alderson, who has earlier alleged flaws in the Aadhaar platform and Aarogya Setu app, quickly reacted, saying, “Update: Koo founder commented the leak. It’s a lie. I did check this point before tweeting and it was not true.” Another controversy that has hit the platform is the issue of investment from China as the platform pitches itself as an “AatmaNirbhar (self-reliant) App”. However, the Koo CEO clarified that the Chinese investor, which had invested in the earlier brand Vokal, was on its way out. “Koo is an India registered company with Indian founders. Raised earlier capital 2.5 years ago. Latest funds for Bombinate Technologies is led by a truly Indian investor 3one4 capital. Shunwei (single digit shareholder) which had invested in our Vokal journey will be exiting fully,” Radhakrishna said. Koo earlier this month announced that it has raised $4.1 million as part of its Series A funding.

Infosys veteran Mohandas Pai’s 3one4 Capital is the latest addition to the investors on board, it said, adding that Accel Partners, Kalaari Capital, Blume Ventures and Dream Incubator also participated in the round. Koo currently has about 3 million users and traffic to the platform rose as much as by 30 times on Wednesday, according to a source who is familiar with the matter. User base of the platform, according to the source, has also increased dramatically over the past two days. The growth comes amid a controversy surrounding Twitter which refused to fully comply with the government’s order for blocking some tweets and Twitter accounts, citing the right to freedom of expression. “We have got more love than we expected. Our systems are facing more load than ever. Thank you for placing your trust in us. Our team is working on overdrive to fix it. We request your patience and support through this time. Let’s do this together,” Radhakrishna said.

New Delhi, Feb 11 (IANS): The Centre on Thursday categorically cautioned social media platforms against spreading fake news or anything inciting violence, as Information Technology Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said action will be taken if Indian laws were flouted. “There is freedom of speech but Article 19A says that this is subject to reasonable restrictions,” the Minister for Communications, Electronics & Information Technology told in the Rajya Sabha as he reminded platforms like Twitter and Facebook to comply with Indian rules while carrying out business. “We respect social media a lot, it has empowered common people. Social media has a big role in the Digital India programme. However, if social media are misused to spread fake news and violence, then action will be taken on the misuse of social media in India whether Twitter or else,” said Prasad. He said all the social media platforms will have to adhere to the constitution of India. The Indian constitution allows criticism of the government and the Prime Minister, but spreading fake news will not be allowed, he said. Prasad said, “We have flagged certain issues to Twitter and social media has to take into consideration of the Indian Laws if they want to do business in the country. “Different parameters can’t be allowed for differ-

An official statement issued late Wednesday night said the Secretary told Monique Meche, Vice President, Global Public Policy and Jim Baker, Deputy General Counsel and Vice President Legal of Twitter that delayed compliance to lawfully passed orders are “meaningless”. The official expressed his deep disappointment to Twitter leadership about the manner in which Twitter has unwillingly, grudgingly and with great delay complied with the substantial parts of the order, the statement said. Thakurnagar (WB), Feb 11 (PTI): Union Home Minister Amit Shah Thursday said the process of granting Indian citizenship to refugees under the CAA, including to the Matua community of West Bengal, will begin once the process of COVID vaccination has ended. Accusing the opposition parties of misleading the minorities about the Citizenship (amendment) Act, he said its implementation will not impact the citizenship status of Indian minorities. Shah said the Modi government had in 2018 promised it will bring in a new citizenship law and kept it when the BJP was voted to power in 2019. He said, after the country was hit by the COVID19 pandemic in 2020, its implementation had to be kept in abeyance. “Mamata didi said we made a false promise.

She started opposing the CAA and saying she will never allow it. The BJP always fulfils the promises it makes. We have brought this law and refugees will get citizenship. “A s s o o n a s t h e COVID vaccination process ends the process of granting citizenship under CAA will begin,” he said, addressing a rally here in the bastion of the Matua community. Matuas, originally from East Pakistan, are weaker section Hindus who migrated to India during the Partition and after the creation of Bangladesh. Many of them have been accorded Indian citizenship but a sizeable section of the population has not. Shah said Banerjee will not be in a position to oppose the implementation of the CAA as she will cease to be the chief minister after the assembly polls likely in April-May this year.

Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar on Thursday expressed complete faith in electronic voting machines (EVMs) and asserted the state government does not want the use of ballot papers in polls. In the past, several nonBJP parties, including the Congress and the NCP, have raised doubts over the reliability of EVMs, claiming they are prone to manipulation. Interacting with the media here, Pawar, a senior NCP leader, said EVMs work fine, but they become target of criticism from losing sides in elections. Before resigning recently as Maharashtra Assembly speaker, Nana Patole, now state Congress president, had asked the legislature to frame a law to give voters the option of using ballot papers besides EVMs in local governing bodies and Assembly polls. Patole, as the speaker, had issued the instruction during a meeting held earlier this month after complaints about alleged EVM tampering in polls. When asked about Patole’s instruction, Pawar said, “Each individual can have a different view. They think that way and I have said what I feel (about the use of EVMs).” Speaking about the government’s official stand on the issue, Pawar said the MVA dispensation, in which the Shiv Sena and the Congress are the other two constituents, “absolutely does not” want the use of ballot papers.

NEW DELHI, FEB 11 (IANS): Homeg rown, vernacular microblogging platform Koo, which has emerged as a favourite among a section of users who want to quit Twitter, has found itself in the midst of several controversies including a data leak row and Chinese investment. These issues have emerged at a time when the platform is trying to keep its systems up in the face of a sudden influx of users, including several cabinet ministers and various ministries in the wake of the ongoing Twitter-government war of words. The issue of data leak row rocked the platform after a French security researcher who goes by the name Elliot Alderson on Thursday claimed that the platform was leaking user data like date of birth, marital status, etc. “You asked so I did it. I spent 30 min on this new Koo app. The app is leaking of the personal data of his users: email, dob, name, marital status, gender,” said Alderson as he also posted a screen shot of a user data. Expedite recruitment process: NJDA

(From p-1) NJDA pointed out that a total of 168 MO and 15 specialist posts were advertised, but the applicants for MOs were only 160 falling short of eight candidates. “So in spite of the fact that there is even shortage of doctors for the advertised post the government is not sincere enough to absorb all at the earliest,” the NJDA stated. It further pointed out that those posts were meant to cater the ongoing pandemic crisis and mitigate the acute shortage of doctors in the state. NJDA has, therefore, appealed to the state government to execute its commitment in letter and spirit and expedite the process as it would not only address the ailing healthcare system in the rural areas, but would also strengthen the tertiary hospital in the districts.

NEW DELHI, FEB 11 (PTI): Installation of CCTV cameras for enhanced security, electric fans to beat the heat in the coming months and even a separate optical fibre line for wifi facility in case there is another internet shutdown at the protest site. These are some of the measures taken by the agitating farmers at the Singhu border to prepare for a long haul as a resolution of the stalemate over the new farm legislation seems unlikely anytime soon. The leaders of the Samyukta Kisan Morcha, leading the protest, have reiterated to continue the agitation indefinitely till the Modi government scraps the three contentious farm laws and extends a legal guarantee of the minimum support price (MSP) for crops. “We are strengthening our communication and other infrastructure to continue the agitation for a long period,” said Deep Khatri associated with managing logistics at the Singhu Border protest

NEW DELHI, FEB 11 (PTI): Stepping up the attack against the government over the three farm laws, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Thursday alleged that these legislations would damage country’s food security system as also “break the spine of farmers” and that the country is being run by only four people with a ‘Hum do, Hamare do’ approach. Gandhi, who was participating in the debate on Union budget in Lok Sabha, kept speaking on the three contentious agri laws, triggering protests from BJP members with Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi urging Speaker Om Birla to direct Rahul to speak on the budget. Sources in the defence and security establishment said the disengagement from the eye-ball-to-eyeball situation is the first step towards overall de-escalation and it may take several weeks to complete the entire process at all the friction points. The defence minister said the implementation of the pact started on Wednesday and it was agreed to convene the next meeting of senior commanders of both sides within 48 hours of completion of the disengagement in the Pangong lake area so as to resolve all other remaining issues. The defence minister said patrolling will be resumed in the areas only when both sides reach an agreement in diplomatic and military talks that would be held subsequently.

NEW DELHI, FEB 11 (PTI): India and China have reached an agreement on disengagement in the North and South banks of Pangong lake in eastern Ladakh that mandates both sides to “cease” forward deployment of troops in a “phased, coordinated and verifiable” manner, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh announced in Parliament on Thursday, in a breakthrough after a nine-month border standoff. Sharing details of the pact to defuse the tense military face-off in eastern Ladakh that severely strained ties between the two Asian giants, Singh also assured the Rajya Sabha that India has not conceded anything in the sustained talks with China and it will not allow even an inch of its territory to be taken away by anyone.

China announced the disengagement process, Singh said China will pull back its troops to east of Finger 8 areas in the northern bank of Pangong lake while the Indian personnel will be based at their permanent base at Dhan Singh Thapa Post near Finger 3 in the region. Similar action will take place at the southern bank of the lake as well, he said. In an identical statement later in the Lok Sabha, he said the disengagement process was “going on well”, and that the implementation of the pact will “substantially restore” the situation to the one which existed prior to the standoff that erupted on May 5 last. The defence minister said both sides have agreed to remove structures that had been built since April last in the North and South bank areas, and put in place a temporary moratorium on military activities including patrolling the traditional

the laws. “So I thought let us make the Prime Minister happy and talk of the content and intent of these laws,” he said, and alleged that “the intent of these three laws is to allow industrialists to buy unlimited quantities of foodgrains and hoard them as much as they want.” Claiming that these measures will end the ‘mandis’ and will end the Essential Commodities Act, he said, “the new farm laws will destroy India’s food security system and will hurt rural economy. The farmers are not going anywhere but will overthrow the government.” Invoking the family planning slogan --’Hum do Hamare do’--, Gandhi attacked the government and

said just 4 people are running the country. “Now four people are running the country...and everyone knows who they are,” he said. The Prime Minister had said that these laws have given options to farmers -“Yes, options are --hunger, unemployment and suicide”, Gandhi alleged. The former Congress chief also said the agitation is not of the farmers alone but a movement of the country and the government will have to repeal the laws. In a dramatic move, Gandhi also led his party members and those from the TMC and the DMK to observe a two-minute silence by standing to mourn the death of farmers during the ongoing agitation. Claiming that “200 farmers” have died during protests, he said he was doing this as the government has not paid tributes to them.

Senate begins Trump’s impeachment trial Democrats make their case against ex-president trump

Double masks substantially reducing exposure to virus WASHINGTON, FEB 11 (IANS): The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has recently conducted experiments to improve the fit of masks amid Covid-19 pandemic, suggesting that combining cloth mask and medical procedure mask could reduce a wearer’s exposure to virus by over 90 per cent. In January, the CDC conducted experiments to assess two ways of improving the fit of medical procedure masks: fitting a cloth mask over a medical procedure mask, and knotting the ear loops of a medical procedure mask and then tucking in and flattening the extra material close to the face, the Xinhua news agency reported. Each modification substantially improved source control and reduced wearer exposure, according to a report released by the CDC on Wednesday. “Based on experiments that measured the filtration efficiencies of various cloth masks and a medical procedure mask, it was estimated that the better fit achieved by combining these two mask types, specifically a cloth

ity, impeached him before January 20, when he was still the president, the Senate impeachment trial has begun three weeks after he left office. This is for the first time in American history that a former US president is being impeached. Trump, 74, is also the first president ever to have been impeached twice. Leading the charge on the Senate floor, Raskin alleged that Trump willfully incited an insurrectionary mob to riot at the Capitol. Several of his Democratic colleagues took the Senate floor to argue that Trump

be impeached. While one of the security camera videos showed the then Vice President Mike Pence and his family rushed from the Senate Chamber, while in others Senators were seen hustling through a hallway. Raskin said the evidence will show that Trump was no innocent bystander. The evidence will show that he clearly incited the January 6 insurrection. It will show that Trump surrendered his role as the Commanderin-Chief and became the “inciter in chief ” of a dangerous insurrection. “This was, as one of our colleagues put it so cogently on January 6 itself, the greatest betrayal of the presidential oath in the history of the United States. The evidence will show you that he saw it coming and was not remotely surprised by the violence,” he said. Raskin said Trump completely abdicated his duty as the Commander-inChief to stop the violence and protect the government and protect the police officers and protect the people. “He violated his oath of office to preserve, protect,

and defend the constitution, the government, and the people of the United States,” he said. Raskin said that the evidence shows that Trump assembled, inflamed and incited his followers to descend upon the Capitol to “stop the steal”, to block Vice President Pence and the Congress from finalising his opponent’s election victory over him. House managers have up to 16 hours to present their case. Raskin said that they would continue with their opening argument on Thursday. Lawyers of Trump would make their presentation after that and they would also have 16 hours to respond to the allegations against Trump. “President Trump put a target on their backs and his mob broke into the Capitol to hunt them down,” said Congressman Stacey Plaskett. Another impeachment manager, Representative Eric Swalwell narrated one video captured from a security camera, telling lawmakers, “Most of the public does not know how close you came to the mob” before escaping to safety.

WASHINGTON, FEB 11 (PTI): Prosecutors at Donald Trump’s Senate impeachment trial have laid out a strong case against the former president, showing previously undisclosed and chilling security camera footage of the mayhem that erupted at the US Capitol last month after a pro-Trump mob smashed their way into the building and posed a threat to the lawmakers. The Capitol building was stormed on January 6 after thousands of supporters of Trump gathered in support of false claims that widespread fraud denied him victory in last November’s presidential election. Five people died, including a Capitol police officer, as the mob breached the building where the November 3 election result was being certified. The US Senate began the impeachment trial of Trump, a Republican, on Wednesday with impeachment managers from the Democratic Party-controlled House of Representatives making a strong case against the former president accusing him of inciting the insur-

UNITED NATIONS, FEB 11 (PTI): A top United Nations official has said that this year, more than ever, the international community counts on India for its contribution to multilateralism as a force for good - from COVID-19 vaccines to climate action and peacekeeping. UN Deputy SecretaryGeneral Amina Mohammed, addressing the inaugural session of the World Sustainable Development Summit 2021 Wednesday, hailed efforts by India to bolster its renewable energy basket and achieve its climate action goals. “India is currently the only G20 country that will overachieve the objectives of its nationally determined contributions. So much has been done already,” Mohammed said. “As India is seeking greater energy security through a revolution in solar, wind and energy storage,

Led by Democratic Congressman Jamie Raskin, a battery of his party colleagues from the House of Representatives alleged that Trump incited his supporters for violence on January 6 as they stormed the Capitol Hill wherein Congressmen and Senators were performing their constitutional duty of counting and certification of the presidential election results. She underlined that India’s efforts provide a “template and a path” for others to follow, in particular through the international cooperation that this very institute represents. “This year, more than ever, we count on India for its contribution to multilateralism as a force for good — on COVID-19 vaccines, climate action and peacekeeping. and pathogens are transnational. Our solutions must be, as well,” she said. Mohammed began her address by expressing her condolences to the people and the government of India for the loss of life and damage caused by the glacier burst and flash flood in the northern state of Uttarakhand on Sunday. “Climate change is destabilising our world, and the consequences are often terrifying. My heart goes out to Uttarakhand,” she said, adding that such catastrophes remind nations of their global imperative to make peace with nature. PM Narendra Modi inaugurated the World Sustainable Development Summit 2021 via video conferencing. The theme of the Summit, which is the flagship event of The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI), is ‘Redefining our common future: Safe and secure environment for all’.

ISLAMABAD, FEB 11 (IANS): Pakistan government employees, protesting for a pay hike, clashed with police in Islamabad while attempting to enter the capital city’s highly restricted ‘Red Zone’ area, the media reported on Thursday. Protests erupted on Wednesday across Islamabad, including the Constitution Avenue, outside Secretariat Block and Cabinet Block, whose main entrance door was broken down by the demonstrators, The Express Tribune reported. The federal employees are demanding a 40 per cent rise in salaries instead of the government’s 24 per cent hike. Due to the protests, the police blocked the city’s strategic Srinagar Highway with containers. As the protesters marched towards Parliament House to stage a sit-in, a heavy contingent of police fired tear-gas shells. Dozens of protesters were also arrested.

KUALA LUMPUR, FEB 11 (IANS): Malaysia’s GDP contracted 3.4 per cent yearon-year in the fourth quarter of last year, rendering a 5.6 per cent drop for 2020, the biggest decline since the last 23 years, the country’s central bank said in a statement on Thursday. The bank said that the negative growth in Q4 was largely attributable to the imposition of the Conditional Movement Control Order (CMCO) on a number of states since October 2020 to contain the spread of the Covid-19 pandemic, reports

Xinhua news agency. “The restrictions on mobility, especially on interdistrict and inter-state travel, weighed on economic activity during the fourth quarter,” it said, despite the fact that continued improvement in external demand provided support to growth. Except for manufacturing, all economic sectors continued to record negative growth. On the expenditure side, moderating private consumption and public investment activities weighed on domestic demand. “On a quarter-on-quar-

mask over a medical procedure mask, could reduce a wearer’s exposure by over 90 percent,” said the report. These laboratory-based experiments highlight the importance of good fit to optimise mask performance. Until vaccine-induced population immunity is achieved, universal masking is a highly effective means to slow the spread of SARSCoV-2 when combined with other protective measures, such as physical distancing, avoiding crowds and poorly ventilated indoor spaces, and good hand hygiene, according to the CDC. US President Joe Biden signed a series of executive orders upon his inauguration, with the first one addressing the mask challenge

ter seasonally-adjusted basis, the economy registered a decline of 0.3 per cent,” said the bank. While the near-term growth in 2021 will be affected by the re-introduction of stricter containment measures in January following spikes of new cases, the central bank said, the impact will be less severe than that experienced in 2020.

amid the Covid-19 pandemic. The “100 Days Masking Challenge” order requires masks and physical distancing in all federal buildings, on all federal lands and by federal employees and contractors. As of February 1, 14 US states and the District of Columbia had universal masking mandates, according to the CDC. Mask wearing has also been mandated by executive order for US federal property as well as on domestic and international transportation conveyances. The US has recorded nearly 27.24 million cases with over 469,800 related deaths as of Wednesday afternoon, according to the real-time count kept by Johns Hopkins University.

The growth trajectory is projected to improve from the second quarter onwards, it added. The central bank said the improvement will be driven by the recovery in global demand, where the International Monetary Fund (IMF) has revised upwards its 2021 global growth forecast by 0.3 percentage points to 5.5 percent.

JA K A RTA , F E B 1 1 (IANS): An earthquake measuring 6.4 on the Richter scale jolted Indonesia’s Bengkulu province, authorities said, adding that no casualties or damages were reported. The quake also had no potential to cause a tsunami, Alfath Abubakar, an official at the meteorology and geophysics agency, told Xinhua news agency. The agency

earlier reported that the quake was at 6.5-magnitude before revising it down to 6.4, he said. The quake struck at 7.52 p.m. on Wednesday, with the epicentre at 80 km southwest Enggano Island and a depth at 10 km under seabed, Abubakar said. The intensity of the quake was felt at II to III MMI (Modified Mercalli Intensity) in the island and

II MMI in Bengkulu city and Kepahiang district, the official said. In Enggano Island, the hardest-hit area, the jolts cause damages or casualties, said Welson Hendri, head of emergency unit of disaster management agency in North Bengkulu district where the island is located. “I have called the head of the sub-district of Enggano, there were no buildings

damaged or people injured. The situation was calm,” he told Xinhua. Earlier on Wednesday, a tsunami warning had been issued after a massive undersea earthquake measuring 7.7 on the Richter scale struck a region between Australia and Fiji and north of New Zealand.

Odisha FC, Kerala Blasters play out 2-2 draw Tokyo 2020 chief Yoshiro Mori

M A R G A O, F E B 1 1 (AGENCIES): Kerala Blasters FC once again squandered a winning position, playing out a third successive draw after being held 2-2 by Odisha FC in the Indian Super League (ISL) 2020-21 at the Fatorda Stadium on Thursday. Odisha’s Diego Mauricio (45’, 74’) netted a brace while Jordan Murray (52) and Gary Hooper (68’) were on the scoresheet for Kerala. Kerala desperately needed a win to revive their playoff hopes but couldn’t find a way past Odisha, a side they are yet to beat. The result meant ninthplaced Kerala are now level on points with SC East Bengal, who have a game in hand. Odisha headed into the break with their noses in front after punishing Kerala for a defensive error. Kerala started bright and saw more of the ball in the opening half but failed to create clear-cut chances. After dominating possession in the first quarter, Kerala missed a gilt-edged

opportunity to grab the lead in the 31st minute. Sahal Abdul Samad intercepted Steven Taylor’s misplaced pass and found Gary Hooper in the box. The Australian beat Jacob Tratt with his first touch but his shot missed the frame by inches. Minutes later, Kerala failed to capitalize on an-

other defensive mistake from Odisha. Arshdeep Singh was at fault this time as he played the ball to Hooper right outside the box. The Australian squared the ball towards Juande whose first-time shot sailed over the bar. Those missed chances would cost Kerala as Odisha scored against the

run of play. Jerry Mawihmingthanga’s lob found Mauricio in the box, and he held off two markers before finding the back of the net. Kerala came out strong after the break and it didn’t take them long to find the equaliser. Hooper saw off Tratt and skipped past Arshdeep, before squaring

the ball for Murray, who got ahead of Sajid Dhot and blasted his shot into the net. Kerala’s intent in the second half would bear fruit as they would take the lead for the first time in the game. Vicente Gomez played a long ball to Sahal, who controlled the ball and picked out Murray with a reverse pass. The Englishman kept his calm and slotted past Arshdeep with ease. But just when it seemed like Kerala were on the up, they would end up conceding again. Bradden Inman whipped a cross at the far post for Mauricio who scored a simple tap-in to draw Odisha level. Both sides went all out in the dying stages in hopes of finding the winner. However, the goalkeepers of both teams came up with some stunning saves to keep the scoreline level. to quit over sexist remarks

TOKYO, FEB 11 (IANS): Tokyo 2020 organising committee president Yoshiro Mori will resign over his controversial remarks about women, media reports said here on Thursday. Nearly all major Japanese media outlets, including state broadcaster NHK and news agency Kyodo, have reported that the 83year-old former prime minister will quit the position since protests over his comments have shown no sign of abating, writes Xinhua news agency. Mori, who was appointed to head the Olympic organising committee in 2014, said on February 3 at a meeting of the Japanese Olympic Committee, “Women have a strong sense of rivalry... if one female member raises her hand to speak, everyone will think they need to say something too.” Mori made an apology at a news conference last Thursday but refused to resign.

Yoshiro Mori

The organisers said in a statement on Wednesday that Mori has expressed his “deepest apologies and remorse”. It also announced that Tokyo 2020 will hold a meeting on Friday for its Council and Executive Board members, who will be “invited to express their opinions on President Mori’s remarks.” Mori’s resignation might be the only option for the Tokyo 2020 organising committee to ease the mounting pressure following the comments. About 400 volunteers

have decided to give up their chance to serve the games this summer and two people announced their withdrawal from the torch relay, due to start on March 25, Japan’s biggest sports newspaper Sports Daily said earlier. The Inter national Olympic Committee (IOC) said in its new statement on Tuesday that Mori’s remarks are “absolutely inappropriate and in contradiction to the IOC’s commitments and the reforms of its Olympic Agenda 2020”.

Sevilla beat Barcelona in first Aus Open: Nadal reaches third round with easy victory Divij Sharan & Ankita Raina crash out leg of Copa del Rey semi-final

Barcelona’s Lionel Messi drips the ball during the Copa del Rey semi-final match against Sevilla, Wednesday.

M A D R I D, F E B 1 1 (IANS): A spectacular individual goal from Jules Kounde and a second-half strike from Ivan Rakitic gave Sevilla a 2-0 win over FC Barcelona in the first leg of their Copa del Rey semi-final clash. Sevilla on Wednesday evening played an intelligent game against a rival missing several key players and was able to soak up pressure in attack, reports Xinhua news agency. Barcelona coach Ronald Koeman produced a surprise in his starting 11, using Junior Firpo as a right-back and moving Oscar Mingueza into central defense. Both Pedro

and Lionel Messi, who has scored 37 goals against Sevilla, were back among the starters. Sevilla missed the injured Lucas Ocampos, who was replaced by recent signing Alejandro Gomez, while Ivan Rakitic lined up against his former club. Sevilla started slowly and Bono made a fine save when Messi was one on one with the Sevilla goalkeeper before the home side began to get into the game and defender Jules Kounde opened the scoring with a fine individual move that saw him slip the ball past Samuel Umtiti and beat Marc Andre Ter Stegen with a diagonal

shot. Ter Stegen was back in action before halftime with an excellent save to deny Sergio Escudero a second goal for Sevilla after the full back’s long-range shot. Barcelona looked to take a step forward at the start of the second half and Bono got down to save a shot from Messi from the edge of the area, before punching away a dangerous corner from Ousmane Dembele. At the other end Youssef En-Nesyri got mixed up with his own feet when he had space to run into and Aleix Vidal failed to control a ball from the left when he had more time than he thought. Barcelona pressed hard but left more space at the back and Rakitic netted Sevilla’s second of the game with just over five minutes left to play when he broke the offside trap, kept his nerve and smashed the ball over Ter Stegen into the net. Messi had a free kick in the 90th minute to try and score a vital away goal, but Bono got down well to make the save. Barcelona needs to score three goals against a rival that has yet to concede in this season’s Cup if they are to reach the final. Thursday sees Athletic Club Bilbao and Levante play the first leg of their semi-final.

Rafael Nadal

MELBOURNE, FEB 11 (AGENCIES/IANS): Rafael Nadal dispelled any remaining doubts over his fitness with a commanding 6-1 6-4 6-2 win against

American qualifier Michael Mmoh on Thursday to march into the Australian Open third round and stay on track for a record 21st Grand Slam title. The

second seed did not play a match in Spain’s ATP Cup campaign last week with a back problem and following his opening win in Melbourne he had said the injury was still bothering him. Nadal showed no sign of discomfort, however, against the 177th-ranked American under the closed roof of the Rod Laver Arena and peppered the blue court with winners from both forehand and backhand sides as Mmoh watched on helplessly. The 2009 Melbourne Park winner, who is tied with Roger Federer at 20 Grand Slam singles titles, will next meet either Briton Cameron Norrie or Russian qualifier Roman Safiullin.

Divij Sharan

Ankita Raina

India’s Divij Sharan and Ankita Raina on Thursday lost their respective first-round matches in men’s doubles and women’s doubles event to crash out of the Australian Open Grand Slam. Sharan, alongside Igor Zelenay of Slovakia, lost 1-6, 4-6 to the German pair Kevin Krawietz and

Yannick Hanfmann in a match that lasted one hour and four minutes. In women’s doubles event, Raina -- who partnered with Romania’s Mihaela Buzarnescu -- suffered a 3-6, 0-6 defeat to Australian pair of Belinda Woolcock and Olivia Gadecki in one hour and four minutes.

Defending champion Sofia Svitolina sees off Coco challenge to reach 3rd round fifth seed Elina Kenin bows out in 2nd round Ukrainian Svitolina made good use

Sofia Kenin

Defending champion Sofia Kenin crashed out of the Australian Open after suffering a straight-sets defeat to Estonia’s Kaia Kanepi in their second-round contest here on Thursday. Kanepi beat World No.4 6-3 6-2 in a match that lasted just 64 minutes to

cause what has been the biggest shock of the women’s tournament so far. This was her 13th victory over a current Top 10 player, eight of which have come at Grand Slam tournaments. The 35-year-old Estonian veteran admitted she was nervous about the match-up. “She’s obviously a tough player and she’s playing big. We’ll see how it’s going to go,” she added. Kanepi has also won six of her seven matches this season, having reached her first WTA singles final since 2013 just last week at the Gippsland Trophy in Melbourne Park. She will next take on 28th seed Donna Vekic.

of limited opportunities against American teenager Coco Gauff to reach the Australian Open third round with a 6-4 6-3 victory on Thursday. The 16-year-old Gauff, the youngest player in the main draw at Melbourne Park, took the tournament by storm last year, taking down Venus Williams, SoranaCirstea and Naomi Osaka en route to the fourth round. Already touted as the successor to the Williams sisters, Gauff made a promising start to her bid for another upset victory in her fledging career when she set up a break point opportunity on Svitolina’s first service

Elina Svitolina

game. But the Ukrainian stayed firm to hold and denied Gauff on three more occasions during the 77minute contest under the closed roof of the Rod Laver Arena. The steely Svitolina converted two out of her three break point opportu-

nities against the big-hitting world number 48 to seal the fate of the match in what was their first meeting. Svitolina next meets Kazakh 26th seed YuliaPutintseva, who beat Alison Van Uytvanck of Belgium 6-4 1-6 6-2, having won almost 80% of her first serve points against Gauff.

NEW DELHI, FEB 11 (IANS): Union Sports Minister Kiren Rijiju has made it clear that ace sprinter Hima Das -- who will be appointed as the Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) in Assam Police -- will “keep running for India” in the future as well. On Wednesday, the decision to appoint Hima as DSP was taken in an Assam cabinet

meeting chaired by the Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal in Dispur. “Many people are asking, what about Hima’s sports career? She is training for Olympic qualification at NIS Patiala and will keep running for India,” Rijiju tweeted. “Our elite athletes are employed in various jobs yet continue to play. Even after re-

tirement, they’ll be engaged in promoting sports,” he added. Earlier the Sports Minister had hailed the Assam government’s decision and tweeted: “Well done! Assam Cabinet, headed by CM Sarbananda Sonowal Ji has decided to offer the post of DSP in Assam Police to sprinter queen Hima Das!” Hima, nicknamed ‘Dhing Express’, on her part thanked the Assam CM and said that the decision is a “huge motivation” for her. “I thank our Hon’ble CM Sarbananda Sonowal and Himanta Biswa Sarma Sir for my appointment as Dy SP with Assam Police. The decision is a huge motivation for me. I look forward to be of service to my state and my nation. Jai Hind!” she tweeted on Thursday.
