Patton cautions police against laxity Y. Patton, flanked by TJ Longkumer, addressing the conference. (NP)
Staff Reporter
DIMAPUR, FEB 5 (NPN): Deputy chief minister and minister in-charge of Home department, Y Patton acknowledged the commendable job done by police personnel and expected a high degree of professionalism and dedication from the police but will not tolerate any kind of irresponsible behaviour, indiscipline and laxity in the discharge of duties. Addressing the 49th general conference of Na-
galand Police Service Association (NPSA) as a special guest at Rhododendron Hall, Police complex, Chumoukedima here on Friday, Patton said one area of serious concern in the police force was presence of “some” drug addicts and alcoholics and warned the personnel from performing duty under the influence of alcohol. He told the police officers present on the occasion that such habits would invariably tarnish the hardearned image of the entire force, calling for a compre-
hensive legal mechanism to further strengthen the force for weeding out such irresponsible personnel. Patton maintained that Nagaland Police Service (NPS) was a premier service under the State government, adding that the NPS cadre officers played a crucial role at field level and also termed them as the backbone of the State police department. He said that as NPS officers have been pioneers over the years, their contributions have been acknowledged by the government in many ways. Mentioning that policeman happened to be the most visible representatives of government for the citizens, he said police stations and policemen were the first to be approached by the people in the hour of need, danger, crisis and dif-
ficulties. Hence, he pointed out that the police force was expected to be most accessible, interactive, disciplined and dynamic. While stating that the primary duty of policemen was maintaining law and order, Patton admitted that their duties have multiplied owing to several additional responsibilities being thrust on them. “Police job is mostly situational and one has to be on his toes all the time and even during holidays and at odd hours,” Patton observed, adding that there was the added pressure of high public expectation during discharge of normal duties, more so in situations arising out of law and order problems. He urged the police to uphold and enforce law of the land without favour, partiality and nepotism, stress-
ing that no other agency of the government has been entrusted with such a huge responsibility of maintaining peace and order in the society, even as he exhorted them to be proud of their “unique distinction”. Patton said that the State government was doing its best to bring about improvements in service matters, promotions and other infrastructural and organisational requirements, and assured to address any “genuine grievance” of the police in the days to come. He urged the men in uniform to continue rendering their sincere and dedicated service to the society in keeping with their motto of “Security, Service and Sacrifice”, while appealing them to continue upholding the confidence and trust (Cont’d on p-8)

CNTC president T. Lanu Imchen and general secretary Tsungro Kithan said that RIIN has become a necessity to regulate the registration of indigenous citizens of Nagaland with December 1, 1963 as cut-off year. CNTC maintained that Nagaland has been confronted with the issue of illegal immigrants for long, and so it was time the “elected representatives of the people take it head on without deliberately ignoring it.” It may be mentioned that JCPI, in a representation to chief minister, cautioned that if RIIN was not enacted with December 1, 1963 as the cut-off year, it will be left with no option but to “launch various democratic means of protest” in the State.

Office building. While inaugurating the food processing unit, Tongpang Ozukum lauded the church for initiating a noble project to offer avenues of employment to the educated unemployed. its saturation point. To cite a few, he stated that the health care sector has drastically improved, and that through the implementation of the Epidemic Act in Nagaland has made
the people to follow/abide by government notified rules (rules of law). He further pointed out that the pandemic has made people realise the importance of self-sufficiency and self-sustenance by returning back to the land to toil. The minister urged upon the people to learn from the progress of each other with commitment to the job in hand by inculcating the “work culture”. W h i l e d e l i ve r i n g the introductory note on “MITA Ministry”, ABC Pastor, Rev. Dr. Temsu S stated that the project was to entirely empower the committed youth towards self-reliance. Modi has failed Assam by enacting CAA : Cong
GUWAHATI, FEB 5 (PTI): The Assam Congress on Friday alleged that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has failed the people of the state by enacting the Citizenship Amendment Act. BJP’s Vision Document 2016-2025 had promised to follow in letter and spirit the Assam Accord with March 25, 1971 as the cut off date to distinguish between illegal migrants and citizens of the state, Assam Congress President Ripun Bora said at a press conference here. “The Accord made it clear that those who came to the state after 1971 will be considered illegal migrants but by enacting the CAA, BJP has allowed Bangladeshis to come to India till December 31, 2014 (the cut off date). It has given the Bangladehis a red carpet welcome,” he said. “How is BJP going to fulfill the Assam Accord in letter and spirit?” Bora questioned. The prime minister had also declared that all illegal Bangladeshis in Assam will have to leave bag and baggage from Assam after May 16, 2014, he recalled. The BJP had claimed that there are around 50 lakh Bangladeshis in Assam and according to Home Ministry records, only 308 illegal migrants in 2016, 51 in 2017 and only 50 illegal Bangladeshis in 2018-19 were ousted from India, the Congress leader said. “Now will the PM ask
Ripun Bora forgiveness from the people of Assam for this monumental failure of his government?” Bora asked. The high powered committee on Clause 6 of Assam Accord had submitted a report to Chief Minister Sarbanada Sonowal on February 25, 2020 but not a single word has been uttered by the Modi government on it, he said. As per Clause 6 appropriate constitutional, legislative and administrative safeguards shall be provided to protect, preserve and promote the cultural, social, linguistic identity and heritage of the Assamese people. Bora further said that the prime minister could not grant scheduled tribe status to six communities of Assam despite making promises at every meeting and BJP rally. Referring to the withdrawal of special category status, which Assam enjoyed since 1969, by the Modi government, he said the people of Assam wants to know the reason. “The withdrawal of the special category status by the BJP government has led to a loss of around Rs 8400 crore every year, depriving the state of huge funds for

Aizawl, Feb 5 (PTI): Four more people, including a three-year-old boy and a six-year-old girl, have tested positive for COVID19 in Mizoram, taking the state’s caseload to 4,380, a health official said on Friday. some rounds of tear gas shells to disperse womenfolk and there were no report of any injury in police action. The three youths were taken into Imphal for further necessary action. The police took the Nungba-Imphal via Khoupum route in reaching Imphal, the source added. Irate over the arrest of the youths whom the residents of Nungba area claimed were innocents, they resorted to blockade of highway (NH-37), forcing all kinds of vehicles to pile up on both sides. The protesting residents, mostly womenfolk, demanded immediate unconditional release of the three youths. They were innocent and nothing to do with any alleged extortion in the area, the protesting residents claimed. Jangsinlung, a member of the Nungba Village Authority, who took part in the protest, announced that the blockade along the NH-37 in the Nungba area will continue until the three youths were released without any condition.
development and compelling the state government to take loans which made it debt ridden,” Bora said. Keeping up his attack, the Congress state president said Modi had assured two crore jobs for the unemployed every year. “The people of Assam want to know, how many jobs did the youths of Assam get”. Bora said when the prime minister had come to Assam on January 23, the Congress had asked him questions about his unfulfilled promises but he had not answered them. “We are asking him some more questions about issues that the BJP has failed to fulfill and the injustices done to the people of the state. The time has come now to give a reply”, he added. The BJP governmrnt has announced Rs 1000 crore for the tea garden workers of Assam and West Bengal. “But what happened to the promise of minimum wage of Rs 351.33 to them?” Bora asked. Congress workers, he said, will hold protests outside the offices of all assistant labour commissioners in the district headquarters on February 9 and submit a memorandum demanding RS 351 minimum wage fOR tea garden workers. They will also hold protests on Saturday in front of all petrol pumps across the state for three hours in protest against the rising prices of petrol, diesel and LPG, he added.

Amit Shah to give his consent to MRSSA, says Meghalaya Gov Correspondent Shillong, Feb 5: Noting that Meghalaya Residents’ Safety and Security (Amendment) Act (MRSSA) as “harmless”, Meghalaya Governor Satya Pal Malik said that has tried to convince Home Minister Amit Shah to give his consent to the Act. The MRSSA is aimed at to enhance security, vetting of tenants and ensure safety and security of citizens by preventing antisocial elements from gaining shelter in the state which might be detrimental to peace and tranquility to maintain public order and peace in the State. “I tried to convince him (Home Minister) that this (MRSSA)is harmless and it will take care of the things which are already being taken care of by the Tourism App and therefore it should be given consent,” Malik said. The MRSSA has not received the Governor’s assent so far since the time former Governor Tathagata Roy was in office. Roy had said that there are certain problems on implementing the MRSSA as there are clashes with other central laws. “The Home Minister (Amit Shah) has informed that he would first hold discussions with the ChiefMinister ( Conrad Sangma) and then take a decision,” Malik said. Chief Minister Conrad Sangma, who is scheduled to leave for New Delhi on February 7 to meet the Home Minister, had met Malik on Thursday evening to discuss the issue. “The Chief Min-
ister had met me and I had advised him that he should first plead for the MRSSA. The Inner Line Permit (ILP) comes afterward. If MRSSA is passed a lot of things will be taken care of,” Malik said. On the growing demand of the British-era ILP in Meghalaya, the Governor said, “Apart from pressure groups nobody is asking for it. Local leaders should think about whether the implementation of the permit isgoing to benefit the State or not.” Malik however cautioned the pressure groups to place their demand for implementation of ILP in a “peaceful way” and not to threaten the government or people. “Kashmir has done it (threaten) and they have lost their Statehood, lost their Constitution, lost their flag and got nothing. 50000people were killed. So by confrontation you will not reach anywhere,” the former Jammu and Kashmir Governor said In fact, the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly on December 19, 2019 had adopted a unanimous resolution urging the Central Government to include Meghalaya under the purview of Bengal Eastern Frontier Regulation 1873 and implement ILP. ILP is a British-era regulation designed to preserve ethnicity and culture of the Northeastern tribals. It required all Indian citizens, not usually residents of the area, to secure a special permit for entering the border states and regions of the North-East.

Tikait welcomes support from international celebs
BKU leader Rakesh Tikait talks to media at Ghazipur border, in New Delhi. (PTI)
GHAZIABAD, FEB 5 (PTI): For all the global uproar the farmers’ movement against the new agri laws has caused, the man at its centre seems oblivious of the celebrity support he has been getting. Rakesh Tikait, the 51year-old Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU) leader from the hinterlands of Muzaffarnagar in western Uttar Pradesh, welcomed the support from international artistes and activists, including Rihanna and Greta Thunberg, but acknowledged he does not know them. Talking to the media at Ghazipur on the DelhiUttar Pradesh border on Thursday, Tikait, who is credited with reviving the agitation that appeared to be flagging after the January 26 violence in Delhi, sought to know who these people were. “Who are these foreign artistes?” Tikait said exhibiting unawareness when
asked about the foreigners supporting the farmers’ movement. When informed about American pop-singer Rihanna, adult star Mia Khalifa and Swedish teen climate activist Greta Thunberg, the Sisauli-born Tikait responded: “They may have supported us, but I don’t know them.” “If some foreigner is supporting the movement, then what is the problem. They are not giving us or taking anything away from us,” he said. Commenting on a futile attempt of 15 members of Parliament to reach Ghazipur and meet protestors on Thursday, the BKU national spokesperson said the MPs should have sat on the ground on the other side of the barricading where they were stopped by the Delhi Police. “A barricading has been set up here. They had to come, but they should
have sat down there itself. They would have been on the other side and we on this side (of the barricades),” he said. Tikait said he did not have any talk with the 15 MPs who had tried to come to Ghazipur to meet the protestors. They were also not allowed to speak to the protestors, he added. The 15 MPs from 10 Opposition parties, including the SAD, the DMK, the NCP and the Trinamool Congress, wanted to meet protestors at Ghazipur. Members of the National Conference, the RSP and the IUML were also part of the delegation. Parliament member and Shiromani Akali Dal leader Harsimrat Kaur Badal, who coordinated the visit, said the leaders were not allowed to cross the barricades and reach the protest site, where thousands of farmers are camping since November with a demand that the government repeal the new agri-marketing laws enacted last September. The farmers protest at Ghazipur, Tikri and Singhu at Delhi borders have now attained global spotlight with prominent international celebrities and rights activists talking about the stir. In its pushback, the government said the facts on the issue must be ascertained before rushing to comment on it, and asserted that the “temptation” of sensationalist social media hashtags and views is “neither accurate nor responsible”.
Anyone speaking truth dubbed as traitor, anti-nationals: Raut and for all,” he said. The Sena member said even though they respected the prime minister, who has got a majority to rule, “but, the majority is not run by arrogance,” he said. He said everyone was ashamed by the incidents of violence that took place on Republic Day and asked why those behind the incidents of disrespecting the national flag have not been nabbed so far. “Why is Deep Sidhu, responsible for disrespecting the national flag, not been caught yet. At whose behest he is acting? “Over 200 farmers are lodged in jail after being booked for sedition and not Sidhu. Over 100 youth are missing and whether they have been killed in encounters,” he asked.
Rihanna’s Fenty Beauty in Nails on roads will turn out to be nails in child labour complaint in India ‘political coffin’ of BJP: Jayant Chaudhary
New Delhi, Feb 5 (IANS): After a news report by IANS highlighted the issue of Rihanna’s beauty company, a complaint has been lodged with the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) to investigate if the company sources mica from Jharkhand where child labourers work in dire conditions. The complaint filed by Vinay Joshi of Legal Rights Observatory has asked the NCPCR Chairperson to check if the US pop star’s cosmetic product company, Fenty Beauty brand which procures mica from Jharkhand’s Koderma, Giridih and Nawada has Supply Chain Clearance Certification and if not, then the NCPCR should initiate action against the company. Joshi attached the IANS report titled “Rihanna Fenty, Fenty Beauty and Blood Mica in India” in the complaint to NCPCR Chairperson and said that US pop star’s beauty product brand uses “blood mica” from Jharkhand in which child labourers work in dire conditions. In the complaint, he said that to ascertain that mica is free of child labourers, there are certification agencies. “But media reports say that Fenty Beauty doesn’t have Supply Chain Clearance Certification (SCCC) from either of the two,” the complaint said. “With this letter we would like to request you to investigate whether Fenty Beauty is using uncertified mica and if true, then please
start appropriate legal action against the company and its owners,” it said. Rihanna Fenty’s @ fentybeauty has declared that it does not conduct mandatory audits in regards to Suppliers Code of Conduct under the Californian law for human trafficking, slavery and child abuse - a clever way of saying they might be using child labour, Indian intelligence sources alleged. They added that Rihanna’s Fenty “had the guts to feign compassion for Indian farmers while knowing very well the beauty industry uses illegal child labour (mostly poor farmers’ children, the very farmers that the Government is trying to empower with the farm bills 2020) in India to mine mica - the most important ingredient of her beauty prod beauty products!” Sources claimed that Fenty beauty is well aware, as all other companies, that most of this mica is mined by children of poor farmers in India, whose health and lives are endangered by their company’s unethical means to earn profit. Not only is that a huge risk to @fentybeauty in India but this cheap publicity gimmick may actually put it out of business in India, sources said. A poor oversight of facts, or in this case, an ulterior motive to stall the development of farmers in India, so that the farmers remain poor and their children can be exploited by beauty companies like Rihanna’s Fenty for their gains, sources added.
NEW DELHI, FEB 5 (PTI): Asserting that farmers will not settle for anything less than the repeal of the new farm laws, RLD vice president Jayant Chaudhary on Friday said the government’s “strong arm tactics” will not work against the tillers and the nails being laid on roads for them would turn out to be the nails in the “political coffin” of the BJP. Chaudhary, who has participated in a number of ‘kisaan panchayats’ in western Uttar Pradesh and is campaigning aggressively against the Centre’s farm laws, said the government must immediately withdraw the legislations and draft them afresh after taking the consent of farmers. In an interview with PTI, the Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) vice president alleged that the current leadership of the country is far removed from sentiments and is not perturbed by riots, deaths or big agitations as it is “cocooned” in its own bubble. “It is a totalitarian administration. They are not even listening to their own political people on the ground. If you speak to BJP MLAs or MPs off the record, they are not happy and they can feel the angst rising in the people of India, in the common man who voted for (Prime Minister Narendra) Modi,”
Jayant Chaudhary the former MP said. Chaudhary said he has been to almost every ‘dharna’ site of the farmers, has sat among them, spoken to them at different levels, addressed ‘kisaan panchayats’, and feels that the farmers have formed an emotional connect cutting across different states like Punjab, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh. “There is unity building, and I don’t think that these farmers are going to take anything less than what they have come this far for (which is repeal of the laws),” he said.
The farmers have left their villages, walked for miles, have faced so many hardships with “about 150 of them even losing their lives” and they are still not willing to back down even in the face of the government hardening its stance, the RLD leader said. The farmers’ stance is very clear and they are saying that these laws are not made for them and they will not accept them, he said. It is always the prerogative of the government of the day to make laws but ultimately it is the people’s will that must prevail, Chaudhary asserted. Asked about the multilayered barricading and iron nails studded on roads at protest sites on Delhi’s borders, he said, “These are not nails being put on the roads going to Delhi, these are nails being put into the political coffin that is being made for the BJP.”

New Delhi, Feb 5 (PTI): The Shiv Sena on Friday charged that anyone speaking the truth is dubbed as a “traitor” or “anti-national” and that cases of sedition have been slapped against those criticising the government. Participating in the debate on the Motion of Thanks on the President’s address in Rajya Sabha, Sena member Sanjay Raut said farmers fighting for their rights have been branded as anti-nationals or Khalistanis. He said the farmers, who were known as ‘warriors’ when they fought the Mughals and the British, are now dubbed as anti-nationals when they are fighting for their rights on Delhi’s borders. Raut said farmers from Punjab, Haryana and western Uttar Pradesh, who are sitting on the borders of Delhi, are fighting for the peasants from across the country and demanded that their voice be heard and the farm laws be repealed. “We heard minister Dharmendra Pradhan asking us to listen to the truth. For the last six years, we have been listening to the truth, even the untruth dubbed as truth. The atmosphere in the country today is such that anyone writing the truth is dubbed as traitor and antinational,” he alleged. “Cases of sedition are slapped on anyone asking questions from the government,” he charged, citing examples of MPs like Sanjay Singh and Shashi Tharoor and journalists and writers. Raut said it seems that the government has changed the Indian Penal Code and replaced all its provisions with only those of sedition. He charged that cases of sedition are being lodged against everyone these days and people are booked under the law even for domestic violence cases. The Shiv Sena member further said that the government is trying to defame anyone trying to say something. “Defaming the farmers’ agitation is not a good thing for the country, for farmers

Decades of debate
N
agaland Baptist Church Council(NBCC) has reiterated its commitment to uphold the Nagaland Liquor Total Prohibition Act.1989, some 32 years after it became a law. Further the Church at is recent twenty second triennial convention also urged upon the government to practically and strictly implement the Act, and on its part, it resolved to “sincerely carry out the ministry towards the alcoholics and related problems.” Since the time prohibition was imposed in 1989 -due to pressure from some organizations- every successive government has been put in a tight spot on whether to repeal or not to repeal it. There was an attempt in 1993 to take a hard look at the Act with the objective of getting all on board and decide on whether it should be lifted. Even sometime in 2014, the government had mulled some kind of “relaxation” but , in the end, it developed cold feet due to strong opposition from the church. The fact that prohibition has not been successful wherever it was enacted, is because it is believed that merely passing the law would do. Despite prohibition, consumption has not stopped nor number of consumers dropped. Quantity of liquor, both smuggled from outside and “manufactured” in illicit distilleries within the state, have mushroomed. A senior doctor with the government had earlier remarked, that the dry law in Nagaland was a farce and a total failure. The doctor said the government was unwilling to bell the cat but hiding under the shadow of the church and other organizations. Another educationist had maintained that alcohol consumption is a moral and not a legal issue. He believed that the church should be more concerned with the moral aspect of liquor by reaching out to its members. Of course, it is not possible to enforce “total prohibition” but when the dry state is among the wettest in the region; it takes some convincing to believe that the Act has been anything but successful. According to estimates, the approximate “turnover” of sale of liquor is worth nearly Rs.200 crore annually and the figure could even be higher. There are scores of ‘liquor barons’ both in and out of Nagaland, involved in this thriving trade. Tragically, there are many deaths that have occurred during the decades, mostly related with consumption of spurious alcohol. The cost in terms of deaths is a serious issue. Even some organizations which had spearheaded the demand for imposition of the dry law, today are not disinclined for a review. Their main concern, is that the ban has only opened the floodgates to a thriving black market where more than 90% of liquor is spurious and responsible for causing many deaths. It may be pertinent to note that the history of prohibition in states and nations across, has never been successful since it is not illegal in a majority of states and nations. The previous Congress government in Mizoram, had relaxed prohibition despite the church’s strong objections and lost the election to the MNF when the latter promised to re-impose the law. Of course, on the flip side, prohibition has definitely impacted the public attitude to liquor if the saying “out of sight, out of mind” is true. Unfortunately, liquor may be out of sight but certainly, not out of reach. Ultimately, it is the individual who has to decide and this is a challenge for society and church.
DailyDevotion Are You Ready To Be Poured Out As an Offering? (1)
If I am being poured out as a drink offering on the sacrifice and service of your faith, I am glad and rejoice with you all. —Philippians 2:17
Are you willing to sacrifice yourself for the work of another believer—to pour out your life sacrificially for the ministry and faith of others? Or do you say, “I am not willing to be poured out right now, and I don’t want God to tell me how to serve Him. I want to choose the place of my own sacrifice. And I want to have certain people watching me and saying, ‘Well done.’ ” It is one thing to follow God’s way of service if you are regarded as a hero, but quite another thing if the road marked out for you by God requires becoming a “doormat” under other people’s feet. God’s purpose may be to teach you to say, “I know how to be abased…” (Philippians 4:12). Are you ready to be sacrificed like that? Are you ready to be less than a mere drop in the bucket— to be so totally insignificant that no one remembers you even if they think of those you served? Are you willing to give and be poured out until you are used up and exhausted— not seeking to be ministered to, but to minister? Some saints cannot do menial work while maintaining a saintly attitude, because they feel such service is beneath their dignity.

Post-mortem
Measuring women’s unpaid work India must host global Lemonade Party T I n January, the Supreme Court directed an insurance company to pay a higher claim amount by taking into account the unpaid work performed by a deceased homemaker. This was a welcome step, but the question is: How do we measure women’s unpaid work? Certainly, monetary value can be associated with the domestic and caregiving roles performed by women. When women put in the time to provide care or perform domestic chores, it takes them away from paid work, restricts their participation in social and political activities, and reduces their leisure time. Additionally, evidence from community-based organisations from around the world suggests that the burden of managing these responsibilities forces women to either take up low-quality jobs in the informal economy because they are parttime and allow them flexibility, or forces them to engage younger adolescents in such work — in India, various estimates suggest that approximately 94% women work in the informal, unorganised sector. Either way, unpaid work performed by women and girls fundamentally alters their life opportunities. However, there are at least five challenges to compensating women for their unpaid work. First, how does one accord value to such work? One option is to use an imputed cost approach to capture value, based on market rates provided for such work, as the United Nations Human Development Report did in 1995. But this ignores the emotions that go behind providing such work. How, for instance, can we assign a market wage to the care provided by a mother to her child? There is additional labour that goes into planning, supervising and budgeting for household tasks, which might be missed during such valuations. Second, while time-use surveys (TUS; measures time spent by individuals in different
activities) carried out in India in 1998-99, and then in 2019, have tried to make visible this unpaid productive work, some of these activities are not reported by women themselves as they do not think of it as work (since it is not paid). Third, there is a continuum between unpaid and paid work that applies to women. The (often) unpaid hours put in as family labour overlap intermittently with other household work — there are no neat divisions. Think of a woman taking care of her child while curing fish which can be sold by her husband in the haat. She would not be able to distinguish between the two when a TUS enumerator asks her. Fourth, there is a problem with announcing housework as a woman’s job. It runs the risk of stereotyping women as home-workers and men as breadwinners. In a situation where one of the most important policy concerns is the disappearance of women from the labour force, institutionalising such patriarchal constructs may not help. Data from the Periodic Labour Force Survey indicates that less than a quarter of women in India are available for work or are working, and if the latest Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy estimates are to be believed, more may have dropped off after the pandemic. Finally, there is the question of who should compensate for unpaid housework. A decade ago, there was a demand in a similar vein asking husbands to pay wages to their wives for the housework that they do. This was rejected by the ministry of women and child development then due to its infeasibility. A simple transfer of money from husband to wife within the household may not work; rather, a more carefully formed State-supported policy announcement may have to be
thought of. So what can be done? The first step is to think of methods to assign appropriate values to domestic and care work as a way of reclaiming women’s dignity of work. One way to do this is to use time as a valuing measure, and TUS can be used to assign market wages to the number of hours of work put in by women. This can help produce extended labour statistics, account for the millions of missing women in the labour force, help formulate labour market policies especially for women, and help the government account for the non-market household economy. Investments in data systems to enable regular time use surveys will help complement the labour force surveys and make women’s work visible. A State-supported genderneutral income transfer at the household level should also be considered. Such an announcement, however, needs to be bereft of stereotyping women into specific roles within the household. Indian women face an immense burden of care work, and they will not be able to move away from it unless India universalises maternity entitlements and childcare as a public good. While it is a welcome attempt to provide worth to housework, steps to reduce and redistribute such work are perhaps more important than asking for women’s unpaid work to be monetised, even notionally. They are important to ensure women’s rights and a sense of social justice. he Lemonade Party Movement, a newly formed global initiative which promotes the philosophy that “if life gives you a lemon, make lemonade”, has in a statement called upon India to convene a global meet of leaders and influencers to discuss various threats facing the world future. “Celebrities play an important role in spreading world messages. The recent controversy on tweets about India’s farmer protests by Rihanna, Greta Thunberg, Mia Khalifa, and some others have handed India a lemon. India must take this lemon, and make lemonade. There is much positive India can do,” teh statement said. Nations and individuals are facing unprecedented challenges, including ugly social tensions, climate change, and stress of mind. There is a lack of leadership by the United Nations, and no world leader is stepping up to provide a guiding hand to help navigate planet Earth in the 21st century. Here is where India and Prime Minister Narendra Modi can and must play a generational role. India must refresh its storied wisdom and play the role of an honest broker, a Vishwa-Moderator, and earn global respect as a Vishwa-Guru. A digital lemonade party to discuss tangible steps to reduce global challenges and dangers is the crying need of the hour. India must share and forcefully bring center-stage in world the principles of ahimsa, a middle path and peace of mind, and harmony between man and nature. These lighthouse principles must be spread across all nations, communities, and people in an urgent mission mode. The lemonade get-together must discuss how to spread such lighthouse values globally, especially among children, so that our future generations are less prone to extremism, and learn to live and let live. There is no Planet B. People, environment, and Mother Earth have to each live and let the other live. India can convene this global dialogue, share a vision and invite other nations, leaders, and voices to come together and make lemon-
ade, for a better world and future for all. According to Wikipedia, “When life gives you lemons, make lemonade” is a proverbial phrase used to encourage optimism and a positive can-do attitude in the face of adversity or misfortune. This encouragement of optimism, and a positive can-do attitude in the face of challenges is a core principle of the Lemonade Party. Lemons suggest sourness or difficulty in life; making lemonade is turning them into something positive or desirable. According to Wikipedia, the phrase was initially coined by writer Elbert Hubbard in a 1915 obituary he penned and published for dwarf actor Marshall Pinckney Wilder. The obituary, entitled The King of Jesters, praises Wilder’s optimistic attitude and achievements in the face of his disabilities: “He was a walking refutation of that dogmatic statement, Mens sana in corpore sano. His was a sound mind in an unsound body. He proved the eternal paradox of things. He cashed in on his disabilities. He picked up the lemons that Fate had sent him and started a lemonade-stand.” Although the expression was coined by Hubbard, many modern authors attribute the expression to Dale Carnegie who used it in his 1948 book How to Stop Worrying and Start Living. Carnegie’s version reads: “If You Have a Lemon, Make a Lemonade.” Carnegie credited Julius Rosenwald for giving him the phrase. The Lemonade Party Movement promotes a global culture to try one’s best in order to find a way to innovate, mitigate, and move ahead in a positive direction when engaging with the challenges in social, economic, and conflict resolution, for the peace of mind of we the people, and our communities, locally and globally. The Lemonade Party Movement is a program of the Live and Let Live sf global campaign. ur society suffers famine of truth today. Like a leaky pot and a porous ground, our society will deteriorate with holes of dishonesty and fraud. Honesty is the need to thrive and bring success to our generation. Reliability is honesty while cunning and deception is dishonesty. It is Honesty when we speak the truth and do what we speak. It is Honesty when we do not manipulate and deceive others. It is Honesty when we are transparent and free from guilty conscience. It is Honesty when you are loyal to yourselves, family, company, school, church, society, and government. It is Honesty when you fulfill the oath and vow you have taken and promised at baptism, in marriage, swearing ceremonies, and pledges made in application for a job and employment. Honesty has No Boundary: We are created in the image of God which is God’s character. God is honest. And He wants us to be honest. Who are the honest people? They are the people who love God (not fear), love people, and love themselves. Where are the honest people? They are everywhere in honesty. They are the leaders in public affairs and political platforms, schools, marketplaces, families, churches, companies and social circles. They are the model of the world with influence of truth. Honesty is inborn human quality beyond religious code. We are born with honesty, we must promote honesty and finish well in honesty, no matter whoever one may be. Honesty has No Fear: There is no quarrel in honesty because fault cannot be found in honesty. There is no better antidote to heal and correct
our world except honesty. It is the yardstick that kept our forefathers and ancestors in peaceful coexistence and harmony. The root of the problem of the world is fraud. What will happen to our world without the principle of honesty? And, consequently, what will happen to those who cheat, deceive, manipulate, and rob others? Dishonesty is root cause of psycho-related sickness and slavery. A man of liar and deception is a slave to bondage of dishonesty. His guilty conscience is his jail. But honesty has no condemnation and is free from judgment. Honesty brings peace and happiness, and freedom. If you are honest you are right. If you right, you are honest. Truth has no fear (Psalms 23:4; 91:5). The Bible says that true love has no fear (1 John 4:18). And true love means truthfulness. Back to Honesty: It means repentance from a life of wrong practice at the cost of others. It is wrong to deprive the right of others, assassinate characters of others, and lie to benefit yourself, falsify in public affairs, extort others who work hard and sweat, and trouble others instead helping. It is better to return from a life of dishonesty which is already doomed to condemnation even before judgment (2Cor 5:10). The world cries to honesty. And let us lead our toddlers and children in the direction of honesty. Let us make our world a place of truth and livable. Honesty is the backbone of a strong generation and nation. It is the principle of success beyond survival. Again, there is no fear in Honesty. God bless you! Rev. Dr. Phuveyi Dozo, Naga United Village, Dimapur, Nagaland

month-long campaign to start from Nabadwip on Saturday. The party proposed to launch similar yatras from Coochbehar, Kakdwip in South 24 Parganas, Jhargram and Tarapith in Birbhum between February 6 and 11. The state government asked the BJP to seek permission from the local district administrations. “We have got permission from Nadia district. The administration is permitting us according to the jurisdiction of police stations. The police have taken all the details regarding the route and rallies,” Banerjee claimed. BJP state president Dilip Ghosh accused the state administration and the ruling TMC of dilly-dallying the matter. “The Rath Yatra will be a game-changer in West Bengal politics. It will kick off a wave of support in favour of the BJP and act as the final nail in the TMC government’s coffin. The TMC has been trying to delay the permission just like it did the last time,” Ghosh said. The Trinamool Congress, meanwhile, accused the BJP of indulging in “malicious propaganda” by claiming denial of permis-

year to restore the internet in a phased manner, first in broadband services, and then by lifting the restrictions on 4G mobile Internet services in Ganderbal and Udhampur. Elsewhere in the UT, people had only 2G Internet services on mobile. Sources said the decision to restore services has taken into account the experience in Ganderbal and Udhampur. “No major incident of terror or law and order has taken place in the five months since the restoration of the Internet in these districts. The whole idea of the trial run was this,” another government official said. On Tuesday, the government told Parliament that terrorist attacks in the Valley had more than halved in 2020 compared to 2019. The number of terrorists killed by security forces in Kashmir went up by 41% in this period.

sion to hold the campaign. “GoWB has not denied permission to any Yatra, as claimed by @BJP4Bengal. They are indulging in malicious propaganda with neither substance nor truth. “BJP must show material evidence of GoWB denying permission to their Yatra. This is BJP’s attempt to claim victimhood,” the TMC tweeted. State minister Bratya Basu said it would have been improper for the state government to accord permission for the events from a “single point”. The BJP was therefore asked to obtain permission for district administrations concerned. “A PIL was also filed regarding the same in the High Court & the matter is now sub judice. We thereby clarify that AITC has nothing to do with this issue,” the TMC said. A PIL was filed before the Calcutta High Court on Wednesday, praying for its intervention to prevent the BJP’s planned ‘rath yatra’ across the state, claiming that it would impact the COVID-19 situation and law and order in the state. TMC spokesperson Kunal Ghosh said, “Rath Yatra symbolises hatred and fear”. “Rath Yatras since the 1990s by the BJP have led to communal tensions. It is a symbol of hatred. In Bengal also they want to destroy the communal harmony,” he said. Terming the allegations as baseless, BJP spokesperson Samik Bhattacharya said the TMC is afraid of allowing the saffron party from carrying out its political programmes.

took the decision to restore services in Jammu and Kashmir based on reports by security agencies that restoration of 4G mobile internet services were not likely to cause any major security problem in the UT. “A meeting was held this morning by Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, where the go-ahead was given for restoration of 4G services based on the recommendation of the local administration and security agencies,” a government official said. Mobile internet services were suspended in Jammu and Kashmir on August 4, 2019, a day before the Centre announced the decision to strip the erstwhile state of its special status and bifurcate it into two Union Territories — Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh. Internet services had been suspended on ground of anticipated law and order situations as a result of the decisions, and intelligence inputs about possible attacks by terrorists infiltrating from across the border. However, the government took the decision last
New Delhi, Feb 5 (PTI): The Supreme Court on Friday granted interim bail to comedian Munawar Faruqui in a case lodged at Indore in Madhya Pradesh for allegedly hurting religious sentiments. A bench headed by Justice R F Nariman also issued a notice to the Madhya Pradesh Government on Munawar’s plea challenging the high court order refusing to grant regular bail to him. In the proceedings conducted through video conferencing, the bench, also comprising Justice B R Gavai, also stayed the production warrant issued against the comedian in a separate case lodged in Uttar Pradesh for allegedly hurting religious sentiments. Faruqui and four others were arrested on January 1 following a complaint by a BJP MLA’s son that alleged objectionable remarks about Hindu deities and Union Home Minister Amit Shah were passed by him during a comedy show at a cafe in Indore on New Year’s day. One more person was arrested subsequently. The high court, in its order passed on January 28, had refused to grant him bail noting that to “promote harmony” is one of the constitutional duties.

S R I NAGAR , F E B 5 (AGENCIES): After 18 months of shutdown, the 4G mobile internet services will be restored in Jammu and Kashmir, the UT’s Principal Secretary of Power and Information Rohit Kansal said. “4G mobile internet services being restored in entire J&K,” Kansal said in a tweet. Former Chief Minister Omar Abdullah tweeted, “4G Mubarak! For the first time since Aug 2019 all of J&K will have 4G mobile data. Better late than never”. The 4G internet services were shut down in the UT after the Centre abrogated the erstwhile state’s special status under Article 370 on August 5, 2019. The 4G mobile internet services were available in only two of the 20 districts of Jammu and Kashmir until now. Services were restored in Udhampur in Jammu and Ganderbal in Kashmir on August 16 last year on a “trial basis”. Sources said a highlevel committee headed by Union Home Secretary Ajay Bhalla recently

Kolkata, Feb 5 (PTI): BJP president J P Nadda is set to launch the party’s ‘Rath Yatra’ in West Bengal on Saturday to mobilise public support ahead of the assembly elections but confusion prevails over grant of permission for the march during which party leaders intend to crisscross the state. Nadda is scheduled to kick off the ‘Parivartan Yatra’ from Nabadwip, the birthplace of 15th century saint Chaitanya Mahaprabhu in Nadia district. Union Home Minister Amit Shah is also likely to inaugurate two of the five proposed yatras later this month. However, confusion prevailed till Friday evening over its prospects as Nadia district administration is yet to accord permission for the Rath Yatra. Although the BJP claimed it has received permission, the district police insisted it is for a public meeting and not the Rath Yatra. “We have provided no objection for the public rally of J P Nadda. But no permission has been given for the so-called Rath Yatra as the matter is sub-judice,” a senior police official said. Earlier this week, the West Bengal BJP had sought permission from the state government for the monthlong event. BJP state vice-president Pratap Banerjee, in a letter to Chief Secretary Alapan Bandopadhyay, said the party intended to launch five rallies at different places beginning February 6. Several top BJP leaders are scheduled to arrive in West Bengal during the

also dedicate to the nation the 348-km Dobhi-Durgapur natural gas pipeline section, which is part of the Pradhan Mantri Urja Ganga Project. It marks an important milestone towards achieving ‘one nation, one gas grid’ project of the government, the PMO said. Constructed at an investment of about Rs 2,400 crore, the pipeline will help revival of HURL Sindri (Jharkhand) fertilizer plant and in supplying gas to Matix Fertilizer Plant in Durgapur (West Bengal). It will cater to the gas demand of industrial, commercial and automobile sectors, and the city gas distribution across all major towns in the state. launch ‘Asom Mala’, which is aimed at helping improve the state highways and major district roads network in the state. The programme is unique for its emphasis on effective maintenance through continuous field data collection and its linkage with the road asset management system, the PMO noted. ‘Asom Mala’ will provide quality inter-linkage roads between the national highways and the rural roads network as well as facilitate seamless multi-modal transportation. It will interconnect economic growth centres with transportation corridors and improve interstate connectivity, it said. The prime minister will also lay the foundation stone of two medical colleges and hospitals, which are being set up in Biswanath and Charaideo at a total estimated project cost of over Rs 1,100 crore. Each hospital will have a capacity of 500 beds and 100 MBBS seats. “The increase in the number of medical colleges and hospitals will not only mitigate the shortage of doctors in the state but also make Assam a hub for tertiary care and medical education for the entire northeastern region,” the PMO said.
NEW DELHI, FEB 5 (PTI): Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be in West Bengal and Assam on Sunday for inaugurating and laying the foundation stone of several development projects and will also address public meetings on these occasions in the two pollbound states. His office said on Friday that Modi will lay the foundation stone of two hospitals and launch ‘Asom Mala’, a programme for state highways and major district roads, at Dhekiajuli in Assam. Bengaluru, Feb 5 (PTI): Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Friday said attaining self-reliance in manufacturing of defence equipment is a crucial factor for maintaining Indias strategic autonomy. The Minister also asked officials to increase the grants that the startups under iDEX (Innovations for Defence Excellence) receive. “I spoke to Chief of Defence Staff General Bipin Rawat and he too expressed his worry that the amount our iDEX start-ups get is less. I ask our Secretary Defence Production and Secretary Defence to see that it is increased in some way. I feel that it is too less,” Singh said. Speaking at the “Startup Manthan” at the Aero India-2021 here, he said, attaining self-reliance in the manufacturing of defence equipment is a crucial factor for maintaining Indias strategic autonomy. “The iDEX initiative stands out as one of the most effective and well-executed defence Start-up ecosystems created in our country. I believe it is a decisive step towards achieving self-reliance in the true spirit of the Aatma Nirbhar Bharat campaign,” he added.

New Delhi, Feb 5 (PTI): More than 12,000 complaints were received with regard to misleading advertisements on television between 2017 and 2020, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting informed Lok Sabha on Friday. In written response to a question, Union Minister Prakash Javadekar said that a total of 12,187 complaints were received in the Grievance Against Misleading Advertisements (GAMA) portal during the period. The portal where consumers can lodge complaints relating to misleading advertisements was launched by the Department of Consumer Affairs in 2015. The minister said that out of these complaints, 8,963 were resolved either by withdrawal or modification of advertisements. “All advertisements telecast on TV channels are regulated in accordance with the Advertising Code prescribed under the Cable Television Networks Rules, 1994. The Advertising Code also provides that no advertisement which violates the Code of self-regulation in advertising as adopted by the Advertising Standards Council of India (ASCI).
He remarked that the primary objective of the conference was to deliberate important issues pertaining to grievances of NPS cadre officers and taking them up with the government for redressal. The conference also discussed matters pertaining to ROP, allowances and other general interest of police force as a whole, he added. Referring to the history of NPSA, Chakesang said the association was formed in 1971 and was formerly known as “Nagaland Police Gazetted Officers’ Association” occupying the position of “premier service” along with NCS under the State government. Having its own regular cadre and service rules, it was later amended as Nagaland Police Service, Rules 2006, regulating recruitment and conditions of service of persons appointed to NPS. He lamented that with the introduction of IPS cadre in the State in 1989 and due to faulty cadre management, service condition of SPS has been badly affected over the years. He acknowledged the deputy chief minister for the recent NPS cadre review, and stated that it would not have been completed without his personal interest and active support throughout the process. He assured full cooperation and solidarity to the government in service of the people. The programme was chaired by NPSA general secretary Watichuchang Jamir, while invocation was offered by NPBCA executive secretary Rev Dr Hukashe Zhimomi and vote of thanks delivered by NPSA joint secretary Shouka Kakheto.

for revival while stating that the near-term inflation outlook has turned favourable. RBI expects Gross Domestic Product (GDP) for next year to grow by 10.5 per cent, a tad lower than 11 per cent predicted by the government’s Economic Survey last week. The growth compares to an estimated 7.7 per cent contraction in the economy during the current fiscal ending March 31. The inflation forecasts are pointing to a decline from 5.2 per cent in March 2020 quarter (Q4) to 5-5.2 per cent in H1-FY22 and 4.3 per cent in Q3. The outlook on growth, Das said, has improved significantly with positive growth impulses becoming more broad-based and the rollout of the vaccination programme in the country auguring well for the end of the pandemic. Addressing the gathering as a special invitee, director general of police (DGP) T John Longkumer said Nagaland police was respected wherever they went and hence reminded the police personnel, especially those recently inducted, of the legacy and responsibility to be shouldered by them. The DGP acknowledged that the State’s police force shouldered responsibility during the most violent and turbulent days since Nagaland achieved Statehood, adding that NPS cadre has truly done a commendable job. Speaking about administrative gaps, he stressed that it was time to review and look at all these to reform and rethink how to improve the service and condition. Longkumer observed that the emphasis of policing has changed, and referred to cyber crimes and new challenges like mass protests, etc, and appealed all present to innovate for tackling every new issue. He admitted that challenges would be unending, but one must be ever ready to face new challenges. He also thanked the deputy chief minister for the support and cooperation rendered to the police force. In his presidential address, NPSA president Vekhosa Chakesang said the general conference of the association provided an opportunity for serving NPS officers to congregate, share ideas for introspection and attain the benchmark to State Premier Service (SPS).

Signalling rollback of pandemic-era policies, the RBI announced a gradual increase in the Cash Reserve Ratio (CRR) -- the amount of deposits lenders must set aside as reserves -- to 3.5 per cent by March and to 4 per cent by May. The cash returning to the central bank can be used by it for open market operations and other liquidity measures. To absorb higher government borrowings, the central bank provided retail investors a direct option to invest in government securities. Acknowledging the strengthening signs of recovery, the RBI applauded the Union Budget 2021-22 for providing a strong impetus
“Given that inflation has returned within the tolerance band, the MPC judged that the need of the hour is to continue to support growth, assuage the impact of COVID-19 and return the economy to a higher growth trajectory,” he said. “The RBI stands committed to ensure the availability of ample liquidity in the system and thereby foster congenial financial conditions for the recovery to gain traction.” The 27th meeting of the rate-setting MPC with three external members -- Ashima Goyal, Jayanth R Varma and Shashanka Bhide -- began on February 3. This is the first meeting of the panel after the Budget 2021-22 earlier this week projected a nominal GDP growth rate of 14.5 per cent and fiscal deficit of 6.8 per cent for the financial year beginning April 1, 2021. The MPC has been given the mandate to maintain annual inflation at 4 per cent until March 31, 2021, with an upper tolerance of 6 per cent and lower tolerance of 2 per cent. On inflation, Das said it has eased below the upper tolerance level of 6 per cent for the first time during the COVID-19 period.

MUMBAI, FEB 5 (PTI): The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) on Friday kept interest rates on hold for the fourth time in a row but vowed to support growth as long it is needed even as it began withdrawing some pandemic-era policies. While the Union Budget 2021 earlier this week laid out an expansive fiscal strategy over the medium term to strengthen the growth engine in the economy, the RBI affirmed its support to such a plan through appropriate monetary tools. The six-member Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) kept the repurchase or repo rate unchanged at 4 per cent, Governor Shaktikanta Das said. Consequently, the reverse repo rate will continue to earn 3.35 per cent for banks for their deposits kept with the RBI. The central banks had last year cut borrowing costs by 115 basis points before hitting the pause button in mid-2020 over inflation worries. All six members of the MPC voted to continue with the accommodative stance
contracted by 23.9 per cent in the April-June period of last year and by 7.5 per cent in the following three months. “... going forward, the Indian economy is poised to move in only one direction and that is upwards,” Das said while unveiling the bimonthly monetary policy. “Although the RBI did not tinker with the policy rate in its meeting held on February 5, 2021, there was expectation that the RBI may unwind some of the regulatory relaxation given to the banks earlier to overcome the COVID-19 impact,” India Ratings said in its comments on the monetary policy decisions. The developmental measures announced by the RBI included the inclusion of NBFCs in the on tap TLTRO (Targeted Long Term Repo Operations) scheme, the incentive to banks to lend to new MSME borrowers through a lower CRR requirement and further deferment of capital conservation buffer. The RBI Governor said the economy’s growth outlook had improved and that inflation was expected to remain less than the central bank’s upper target of 6 per cent over the next few quarters.

to ensure UNSC’s statement China downplays Biden’s vow to confront it onIndia Myanmar was not ‘condemnatory’
Says both countries can do ‘ big things’ together
BEIJING, FEB 5 (PTI): China gave a muted response to US President Joe Biden’s twin policy approach of confrontation with Beijing on challenges it posed and cooperation to further American interests, saying both countries can achieve “big things” together and their common interests far outweigh their differences. In his first foreign policy address, US President Biden on Thursday described China as the “most serious competitor” to the US and vowed to confront Beijing on various fronts, including human rights, intellectual property and economic policy. Biden said his administration would, “take on directly the challenges posed [to] our prosperity, security and democratic values by our most serious competitor: China”. “We will confront China’s economic abuses, counter its aggressive, coercive action to push back on China’s attack on human rights, intellectual property and global governance,” Biden
Joe Biden and Xi Jingping (File)
said in his address to State Department employees at its Foggy Bottom headquarters in Washington. “But we are ready to work with Beijing when it is in America’s interest to do so. We will compete from a position of strength by building back better at home, working with our allies and partners, renewing our role in international institutions, and reclaiming our credibility and moral authority, much of which has been lost,” he said, giving a glimpse of his administration’s policies on China. Outlining his eagerly awaited China policy, Biden said, “that is why we have moved quickly to begin restoring American engagement internationally and earn back our leadership position to catalyse global action on shared challenges.”
Reacting to Biden’s comments, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin told a media briefing here on Friday: “As two major countries China and the US share broad common interests and special major responsibilities for upholding world peace stability and prosperity”. “It is natural that we have differences but our common interests far outweigh our differences. Our cooperation can do big things conducive to the two countries and the world,” Wang said. China heaved a huge sigh of relief over the defeat of former US president Donald Trump by Biden in the US presidential election. Trump’s four years in power are regarded as the worst phase in China-
US relations as the ruling Communist Party of China (CPC) headed by President Xi Jinping struggled to deal with what China’s officials say was the most elusive and unpredictable American leader ever. During his tenure, Trump pushed aggressively on all aspects of US-China ties, including with his relentless trade war, challenging China’s military hold on the disputed South China Sea, its constant threats to Taiwan and describing coronavirus as “China virus” after it emerged from Wuhan in December 2019, as well as on Xinjiang and Tibet issues. Wang in his response skirted Biden’s comments related to challenges Beijing posed but stuck to highlighting the traditional Chinese approach of win-win cooperation. “China is committed to developing relations with theUS featuring non-conflict and non-confrontation, mutual respect and win-win cooperation. In the meantime, we will continue safeguarding our national sovereignty, security and development interests,” he said. Biden’s foreign policy approach was keenly awaited in Beijing as during his campaign he identified Russia as the main problem for
the US, a former President Barack Obama era foreign policy during which Beijing firmed up its position politically, economically and militarily around the world by launching its most ambitious trillion-dollar Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). On February 2, senior Chinese diplomat Yang Jiechi asked President Biden to reset the China-US ties damaged by Trump. Yang said that normal China-US interactions need to be restored, and “China should be seen as it is.” The Trump administration pursued some misguided policies toward China, said Yang, a member of the Politburo of the ruling Communist Party of China, noting that the root cause for it was a strategic misjudgement by some in the US. “They view China as a major strategic competitor, even an adversary. That, I am afraid, is historically, fundamentally and strategically wrong,” he said at a meeting here. It is a task for both China and the US to restore the relationship to a predictable and constructive track of development, and to build a model for interaction between the two major countries that focuses on peaceful coexistence and win-win cooperation.

UNITED NATIONS, FEB 5 (PTI): India engaged constructively and acted as an “important bridge” during deliberations over the UN Security Council’s statement on the situation in Myanmar, ensuring it strongly underlined the importance of the democratic process and transition while not being “condemnatory” in nature, sources said. In a press statement, agreed by consensus, the 15-nation Council expressed “deep concern” at the declaration of the state of emergency imposed in Myanmar by the military on February 1 and the “arbitrary detention” of members of the Government, including State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi and President Win
Myint. The Council, the most powerful organ of the world organisation, issued the press statement on the situation in Myanmar on Thursday, three days after the military seized power in the Southeast Asian nation in a bloodless coup and detained top political leaders. The Council members called for the immediate release of all those detained. India, into the second month of its tenure as non-permanent Council member, engaged “very constructively” during deliberations over the press statement. Sources told PTI that India played the role of an “important bridge”, bringing together various views and wanted to ensure an outcome which was bal-
anced. It also wanted a statement which was not “condemnatory” in nature, but one which helped the process and not become counter-productive. Sources pointed out that India engaged actively with all the parties, a role that has been appreciated by the UK and others. India’s articulated positions on the situation, stated publicly as well, have been taken on board in the press statement. In the first reaction after the coup, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) had said in New Delhi that India noted the developments in Myanmar with “deep concern” and has always been steadfast in its support to the process of democratic transition in Myanmar. “We believe that the rule of law and the democratic process must be upheld,” the MEA statement had said. Sources said that the important focus on democratic transition and process has been kept in the UNSC press statement. India had also emphasised on dialogue and reconciliation, release of detained leaders, and on commitment to the sovereignty, political independence and unity of Myanmar — all of which the press statement underlines.

26 killed in Afghan clashes KABUL, FEB 5 (IANS): At least 26 people were killed during clashes between security forces and Taliban militants in Afghanistan’s Kunduz province on Friday, a top official confirmed. “In the clash 16 progovernment militiamen including their commander Abdul Hakim and 10 Taliban rebels were killed and nine others including five rebels were injured,” the official told Xinhua news agency. Villagers said hundreds of Taliban militants launched massive offensive on pro-government militiamen in Tepa Akhtar area of Khanabad district early morning triggering heavy fighting which lasted for three hours. Mohammad Yusuf, head of Kunduz provincial council, also confirmed the clash, saying that delay in dispatching reinforcement led to the death of 16 progovernment militiamen.

Schoen later clarified by text message that Trump did not plan to testify voluntarily, according to a New York Times report. “I don’t think anyone being impeached would show up at the proceedings we firmly believe are unconstitutional,” Schoen said. The House managers could still attempt to subpoena testimony from Trump during the trial, but doing so would require support from a majority of the Senate, said the NYT report. Earlier on Thursday, House Democrats asked Trump to testify under oath as early as February 8 and no later
NAY PYI TAW, FEB 5 (IANS): U Win Htein, patron of former Myanmar State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi’s National League for Democracy (NLD) party, has been arrested in the wake of the military coup in the South Asian country, a top official said on Friday. The 80-year-old patron, who is believed to be one of Suu Kyi’s trusted confidants, was taken to a district police station in Nay Pyi Taw on Thursday night, Xinhua news agency quoted Kyi Toe, a member of the party’s information committee, as saying in a social media report. Meanwhile, former President U Win Myint and Suu Kyi have been remanded in custody for violating
MOSCOW, FEB 5 (AGENCIES): Russia on Friday expelled diplomats from three EU member states it accused of attending illegal protests in support of jailed Kremlin critic Alexei Navalny, and pointedly ignored a public call by the EU’s top diplomat to free the opposition politician. The expulsions, which affected diplomats from Germany, Poland and Sweden, appear to have wrecked an EU attempt to re-engage with Moscow being spearheaded by Josep Borrell, the EU’s foreign policy chief, who was in Russia for talks on Friday. German Chancellor Angela Merkel called the move unjustified and a further step away from the rule of law in Russia, while Poland summoned the Russian ambassador over the decision. Navalny, President Vladimir Putin’s most prominent critic, was jailed this week for almost three years for parole violations he calls trumped up, a move the West condemned. Russia announced the expulsions after Borrell used a joint news conference with Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov to call for Russia to free
America is back again, says Biden US police officer shot dead
WA S H I N G TO N, F E B 5 (PTI): Declaring that “America is back,” President Joe Biden has said that his administration will “repair” the country’s strained relations with its allies during the previous Trump administration and engage with the world once again. In his first major foreign policy address as president, Biden said America cannot afford to be absent any longer on the world stage. “We will compete from a position of strength by building back better at home, working with our allies and partners, renewing our international institutions and reclaiming our credibility and moral authority, much of which has been lost,” Biden said on Thursday as he visited the State Department for the first time after being sworn in as the 46th US President on January 20. “We cannot do it alone,” Biden said, putting particular emphasis on the need to rebuild the country’s moral standing after four years under his predecessor Donald
Joe Biden
Trump, who often rebuffed America’s traditional alliances. “I want the world to hear today: America is back. America is back. Diplomacy is back at the centre of our foreign policy,” Biden, who was accompanied by Vice President Kamala Harris, said. “We will repair our alliances and engage with the world once again, not to meet yesterday’s challenges, but today’s and tomorrow’s. American leadership must meet this new moment of advancing authoritarianism, including the growing ambitions of China to rival the United States and the determination of Russia to damage and disrupt our democracy,” Biden said.
The US, he said, must meet the new moment accelerating global challenges -- from the pandemic to the climate crisis to nuclear proliferation -- challenging the will only to be solved by nations working together and in common. “We must start with diplomacy rooted in America’s most cherished democratic values: defending freedom, championing opportunity, upholding universal rights, respecting the rule of law and treating every person with dignity. That is the grounding wire of our global power. That is our inexhaustible source of strength. That is America’s abiding advantage,” he said. Though many of these values have come under intense pressure in recent years, even pushed to the brink in the last few weeks, the American people are going to emerge from this moment stronger, more determined and better equipped to unite the world in fighting to defend democracy, because they have fought for it themselves, Biden said.
SANTA FE, FEB 5 (IANS): A police officer was shot dead by a gunman in the US state of New Mexico, leads to a 40-mile chase and shootout, according to authorities. The incident took place on Thursday at the eastbound interstate highway 10 near Las Cruces, reports Xinhua news agency. After killing the victim, identified as Officer Darian Jarrott, the suspect took off down the interstate highway heading east, police said. Then a Las Cruces police officer was shot when trying to stop the suspect, identified as Omar Felix Cueva. The injured officer was taken to a nearby hospital and was in stable condition, authorities said. The suspect was killed in the subsequent gunfire with the security forces, the police added. Law enforcement from multiple departments, including officers from NMSP, US Border Patrol, Dona Ana County Sheriff ’s Office and Las Cruces Police
Department, participated in the chase. New Mexico governor Michelle Lujan Grisham ordered all flags lowered to half-staff in the state from Friday to February 9 in mourning for the deceased officer. “I am shocked, heartbroken and enraged by the loss of this public servant,” the Governor said in a statement.
Navalny immediately. Lavrov did not respond directly to the appeal but complained about what he described as human rights abuses in the EU and called the 27-nation bloc an unreliable partner. Borrell had earlier said that the Navalny case was a low point for ties between Russia and the EU. He said there was not yet a formal proposal for new EU sanctions on Russia but that the 27-member bloc would have a discussion next month about relations with Moscow. “I have conveyed to Minister Lavrov our deep concern and our appeal for his (Navalny’s) release and for the launch of an investigation over his poisoning,” Borrell told the news conference. “Over the last years our relationship has been marked by fundamental differences and a lack of trust.” Navalny was arrested on Jan. 17 on his return from treatment in Germany, where he was flown in August after falling ill from what German officials concluded was poisoning with a military-grade nerve agent. The Kremlin has questioned
whether Navalny was poisoned and denied blame for his illness. Lavrov said it was up to Brussels if it wanted to impose sanctions on Russia, but that the EU was behaving more and more like Washington in its use of unilateral sanctions. “We share the view that a further deterioration of ties is fraught with negative and highly unpredictable consequences,” Lavrov said. A few hours after the talks, Russia announced the expulsion of the diplomats, saying they had taken part in illegal protests last month against Navalny’s jailing. The foreign ministry said Moscow considered their actions unacceptable. Despite close trade ties and energy interdependence, Russia’s political relations with the European Union soured after Moscow annexed Crimea from Ukraine in 2014. Navalny was back in court on Friday for another trial, accused of slandering a World War Two veteran who took part in a promotional video backing changes last year that let Putin run for up to two more terms.

WASHINGTON, FEB 5 (IANS): Former US President Donald Trump will not testify under oath voluntarily at his Senate impeachment trial set to begin next week, his legal team said, calling the House Democrats’ request a “stunt”. “We are in receipt of your latest public relations stunt,” Trump’s attorneys Bruce Castor and David Schoen wrote in a response on Thursday. “As you certainly know, there is no such thing as a negative interference in this unconstitutional proceeding. “Your letter only confirms what is known to everyone: you cannot prove your allegations against the 45th President of the US, who is now a private citi-

the National Disaster Management Law and ImportExport Law until February 15, according to a senior military official. The President and the State counsellor were detained by the military, along with other NLD officials early Monday mor ning just ahead of declaring the coup. The NLD had posted a statement on its social media page demanding the release of the detained leaders, acknowledge the results of 2020 general elections and stop any disturbances which are hindering the process of convening the third parliamentary session. After the militar y seized control of the country, the President’s Office declared a one-year state of emergency and the state power was handed over to Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Sen-Gen Min Aung Hlaing. The coup was staged over the disputed results of the November 8, 2020 parliamentary polls in which the NLD obtained more than 80 per cent of the seats and increased its parliamentary majority.

than February 11. Lead Impeachment Manager Jamie Raskin, a former constitutional law professor, wrote in a letter that Trump’s response to the article of impeachment had denied what managers called “incontrovertible facts about the president’s conduct on and leading up to” the January 6 Capitol riots leaving five people dead. “In light of your disputing these factual allegations, I write to invite you to provide testimony under oath, either before or during the Senate impeachment trial, concerning your conduct on January 6, 2021,” Raskin wrote to Trump. “If you decline this invitation, we reserve any and all rights, including the right to establish at trial that your refusal to testify supports a strong adverse inference regarding your actions (and inaction) on January 6, 2021,” he added. In the wake of the Capitol riots, the Democrats-controlled House voted to impeach Trump over “incitement of insurrection” in a 232-197 vote on January 13, making him the first US sitting US President to be impeached twice.

Was misguided, Sonu Sood tells SC allowed to withdraw plea
B
ollywood actor Sonu Sood on Friday informed the Supreme Court that he was given wrong advice in the matter pertaining to illegal construction, and it allowed him to withdraw the plea challenging the Bombay High Court order, which junked his case on alleged illegal construction at his residential building in Juhu area. Senior advocate Mukul Rohatgi, representing Sood, urged withdrawal of this petition as also the the civil suit pending before the Bombay City Civil Court at Borivili Division, Dindoshi, in view of the application for regularisation filed pursuant to the notice on October 24, 2020 under Section 44 of the Maharashtra Regulation and Town Planning Act, 1966. A bench headed by Chief Justice S.A. Bobde allowed this prayer. The bench, also comprising Justices A. S. Bopanna and V. Ramasubramanian, in its order, said: “We direct the concerned Authorities to consider and decide the said application on its own merits and in

lice Cooper has released a free single to mark his birthday. The 73-year-old singersongwriter has unveiled a track called 'Social Debris' as a "gift to Detroit, to his fans and to himself" to mark 73rd birthday on Thursday. He said: "The single 'Social Debris' is a gift to Detroit, to my fans and to myself. The track was written by the original Alice Cooper band. We never thought that we would ever fit in; the Alice Cooper band didn’t fit in with anybody, because we were doing things that no other band did. We didn’t fit in with the folk scene, we didn’t fit in with the metal scene, we really didn’t fit in with anything that was going on at that time. We just always felt like we were outsiders. We felt like we were social debris, we were in our own little world. So 'Social Debris' was just the original band writing a song about us, essentially. And it came out sounding like it belonged in 1971. That’s just the original band – you can’t change that, it’s great." The track will be available for free for 24 hours from the artist's website. And Alice has revealed his upcoming album, 'Detroit Stories', will be a celebration of Detroit rock.
accordance with law. Accordingly, the special leave petition and the civil suit being L.C. Suit No.1368 of 2020 are dismissed as withdrawn.” During the hearing, the top court orally observed that no coercive action should be taken against Sood until the civic authorities take a decision decide on his application for regularisation.
At the outset, Rohatgi submitted before the bench that he had advised his client to withdraw the plea, and instead seek the liberty that BMC should take a decision on his application for regularisation. At this, the bench told Rohatgi: “That is good advice”. The Chief Justice emphasised that he had given the right advice to
his client. The Chief Justice said the court does not want to seem sarcastic, but this appears to be the rare occasion when, by way of correct advice, it sees litigation getting resolved. Rohatgi said his client is a Bollywood actor. “He has no knowledge about all this. He was misguided,” he submitted. The bench replied: “No, no, we don’t mean any disrespect to anyone. We are only saying that your advice was absolutely right.” In a lighter vein, the bench said that “the script has been written well”. On January 21, the Bombay High Court’s Justice Prithviraj Chavan, dismissing Sood’s plea, said law helps only those who are diligent. The plea, filed by the actor and his wife in the apex court, said: “The petitioners have already stopped the work of internal renovation which requires no permission as per the provisions of Section 43 of Maharashtra Regional and Town Planning Act, 1966, therefore, the respondents may kindly be restrained from demolition of the renovation work already done in the building.” (IANS)

om Holland has described ‘Spider-Man 3’ as the “most ambitious standalone superhero movie ever”. The 24-year-old actor will reprise his role as the web-slinging hero in the film and feels that the project is “really impressive”. Tom said: “I can say that it’s the most ambitious standalone superhero movie ever made. You sit down, read the script, and see what they’re trying to do, and they’re succeeding. It’s really impressive. “I’ve never seen a standalone superhero mov-
ie quite like it. And I’m just, you know, again, that lucky little s*** who happens to be Spider-Man in it.” Holland explained that there is still more filming to be completed but he is very “excited” to see the finished film. He told Variety: “We got a lot more shooting to do. We started before Christmas and shot for like seven weeks. We stopped for the Christmas break, and then we’re starting again. I’m just as excited as everyone else to see it, let alone be a part of it.” The ‘Avengers: End-
game’ star revealed that he is keen to direct a movie and is keen to bring a script he has been working on with his brother Harry to the big screen. Asked if he was tempted to get behind the camera, Tom said: “Yes, absolutely. I’ve been trying to scratch that itch for a really long time. And my younger brother Harry and I have been writing a script together. We managed to acquire the rights to a book series that we loved as kids. So we’ve been sort of chipping away at that. “I now have so much more respect for writers because it’s so difficult, man, I mean, trying to put something on the page is really, really quite difficult.” He continued: “I’d love to direct one day. We’re not rushing anything because I think the project we’re working on is amazing and can be quite powerful. So we want to make sure we get it right. “But hopefully, within the next five years, you’ll see Harry and I sitting in the director’s chairs shouting action.” (Contactmusic)

ctress Emma Corrin will star opposite singer-actor Harry Styles in upcoming romantic drama, My Policeman. Michael Grandage directs the screen adaptation of the Bethan Robert novel of the same name, based on an adapted screenplay by Ron Nyswaner, reports hollywoodreporter.com. Styles and Corrin will star as Tom and Marion in the film, set in the late 1990s. The story starts with the arrival of elderly Patrick into Marion and Tom’s home, which triggers the exploration of events from 40 years prior -- a passionate relationship between Tom and Patrick at a time when homosexuality was illegal. Corrin is best known for her role as Lady Diana Spencer in the fourth season of The Crown, which has earned her Golden Globe, SAG and Critics Choice nominations. Last year, she made her debut film appearance in Misbehaviour, a historical drama in which she starred alongside Keira Knightley, Keeley Hawes and Gugu Mbatha-Raw. (IANS)
Taylor Swift responds to lawsuit from Evermore theme park in Utah
T
aylor Swift is being sued for trademark infringement by a Utah theme park that shares the same name as her latest album, ‘Evermore’. The Evermore theme park alleges that the singer’s album title has confused guests and detrimentally affected its page ranking on internet search engines. The lawsuit, filed earlier this week in a US District Court in Utah, also alleges that Swift’s album infringes on the theme park’s merchandise designs and artwork for the original soundtracks it has released. Following the record’s release in December, Evermore park management claims its guests were asking whether Swift and the theme park had collaborated on the album. The lawsuit is seeking millions in damages, in addition to legal fees. Swift’s legal team has responded to the lawsuit, dismissing it in a statement as “frivolous” and pointing to the various lawsuits that are currently underway against the Evermore group and its founder Ken Bretschneider. Describing the lawsuit as “baseless … frivolous and irresponsible”, Swift’s
representatives added: “It is inconceivable that there is any likelihood of confusion between your client’s theme park and related products and Ms Swift’s music and related products.” In a letter filed in court, the singer’s representatives also said that the theme park’s sale of “small dragon eggs, guild patches and a small dragon mount” are not similar to the merch items being sold on Swift’s website. “According to Utah Business, ‘As of June 2020, at least five lawsuits have been filed against Bretschneider and the Evermore group by major construction companies like Sunroc, AGC Drywall and Construction, Geneva Rock, Mountain
Point Landscaping, EME Mechanical, Kreativ Woodworks, and NFH Distributing (Beehive Brick and Stone)’,” a spokesperson for Swift told Pitchfork. “The companies claim ‘they are owed between $28,000 and $400,000.’ Utah Business says, ‘he owes millions of dollars in construction, mechanic, and landscaping fees to workers across the valley who have yet to be paid’… with ‘a collection of more than 20 construction liens on the Evermore property.’ The true intent of this lawsuit should be obvious.” ‘Evermore’ arrived in the last few days of 2020 as Swift’s second surprise album of the year. hildren who receive a seasonal flu shot are less likely to suffer symptoms from a Covid-19 infection, researchers say. The findings suggest that Covid-19 positive children who received the influenza vaccine in the current flu season had lower odds of experiencing symptoms, respiratory problems or severe disease. “It is known that the growth of one virus can be inhibited by a previous viral infection,” said researcher Anjali Patwardhan, Professor at the University of Missouri in the US. “This phenomenon is called virus interference, and it can occur even when the first virus invader is an inactivated virus, such as the case with the flu vaccine,” Patwardhan added. For the study, published in the journal Cureus, the researchers reviewed records from 905 paediatric patients diagnosed with Covid-19 to determine each patient’s influenza vaccination history. The team found that children with Covid-19 who received the pneumococcal vaccine also had lower odds of experiencing symptomatic disease. “Research on the paediatric population is critical because children play a significant role in influencing viral transmission,” Patwardhan said. “Understanding the relationship and co-existence of other viruses alongside Covid-19 and knowing the vaccination status of the
paediatric patient may help in deploying the right strategies to get the best outcomes,” Patwardhan added. Patwardhan said it will also be important to explore the connection between vaccinations and Covid-19 symptoms in a larger geographical-multiracial study. (IANS)
mystified, the researcher said, because during these late hours, most patients are in a resting state, with reduced metabolism, heart rate and blood pressure. Sudden cardiac arrest - also called sudden cardiac death - is an electrical disturbance of the heart rhythm that causes the heart to stop beating, the researcher said. For the study, the team of investigators looked at the records of 4,126 patients, with 3,208 daytime cases of sudden cardiac arrest and 918 night-time cases. Compared with daytime cases, patients who suffered from night-time cardiac arrest were more likely to be female. The team also found
that the prevalence of lung disease was significantly higher in those who had a cardiac arrest at night compared with those who had cardiac arrest during the daytime. “The prevalence of chronic obstructive lung disease and asthma were found to be significantly higher in sudden cardiac arrest cases at night compared with daytime cases, regardless of gender,” said Chugh. “Brain-affecting medications, some of which have the potential to suppress breathing, were also found to have a significantly greater usage in night-time compared to daytime cardiac arrest,” Chugh added. Defending football champs K Basa in qtr finals DIMAPUR, FEB 5 (NPN): Three times defending champions Khulazu Basa registered their empathetic win over Kikruma 1-0 in men’s football to enter the quarterfinal round on the fifth day of the ongoing 50th golden jubilee of Chokri Area Games and Sports Association (CAGSA) at Phüsachodü village under Phek district on Friday. Playing in Group A matches, defending champions K Basa got off to a flying start when Lutuzo scored the first goal in the 10th minutes. With the goal, the team bought the game into their hands and enjoyed the ball possession in the first half. Kikruma tried to regain their momentum in the second half but were undone by their strikers finishing. They got their share of chances to find the equaliser but didn’t break through as the match ended in favor of the K Basa team. The win puts K Basa on top of the Group A table with six points. Despite the defeat, Kikruma will qualify for the next round with a win and a loss. Thipuzu came from a goal down to overcome North Kikruma by 2-1 in a thrilling encounter. All-Star Game proposal a ‘slap in the face’, says Lakers’ James
LeBron James
LOS ANGELES, FEB 5 (AGENCIES): Los Angeles Lakers forward LeBron James said the NBA’s bid to stage an All-Star Game amid the COVID-19 pandemic was like a “slap in the face”. U.S. media reported that the league and its players union had agreed to hold the annual exhibition event in Atlanta on March 7, with an official announcement expected this week. “I have zero energy
and zero excitement about an All-Star Game this year,” James told reporters after Thursday’s 114-93 victory over Denver Nuggets. “I don’t even understand why we’re having an All-Star Game, but it’s the agreement. “Coming into this season, we were told that we were not having an All-Star Game, so we’d have a nice little break ... an opportunity for me to kind of recalibrate for the second half of the season.
Jehan Daruvala tops Asian F3 standings after flawless round 2
Jehan Daruvala
ABU DHABI, FEB 5 (IANS): Jehan Daruvala climbed to the top of the 2021 Asian Formula 3 Championship standings by winning the second race and finishing second in the third race of the second round on Friday. Daruvala, racing for all-Indian outfit Mumbai Falcons, had earlier won the first race of the round as well. The Mumbai resident had a near perfect launch from pole position and held his position into the first corner. Behind him, IsackHadjar of France also held onto second, while championship leader Guanyu Zhou dropped a position to allow Dino Beganovic into third. Daruvala, who started on pole in the second race, K Y M C
had a much more challenging Race 2 than he did on Thursday, even momentarily losing the lead in a three-car battle with Evans GP's IsackHadjar and Abu Dhabi Racing's Dino Beganovic. However, a late breaking maneouvre helped Daruvala to surge ahead and stay on the track in the process. Jehan somehow managed to stay on track and held the lead. Jehan fended off more challenges from Hadjar to take the race. Daruvala started the last race from third on the grid but quickly moved to second place and did well to hold on to the position. The championship format allows only two sets of tyres per round, to be used and Pinnacle Motorsport's Pierre-Louis Chovet was on a fresher set of tyres, while Daruvala and Hadjar were on an older set, and therefore unable to challenge Chovet, who comfortably won the race. The Mumbai Falcons' racer was second, ahead of Hadjar. The victory meant that Daruvala displaced Guanyu Zhou from the top of the championship table.
“Then they throw an All-Star Game on us like this, it’s pretty much kind of a slap in the face. We’re still dealing with a pandemic, with everything that’s been going on, and we’re going to bring the whole league into a city that’s still open.” James, a 16-time AllStar, was among the leading vote-getters in the first round of fan voting and said he would be there in body. “I’ll be there physically if I’m selected. I’ll be there physically, but not mentally,” the four-times NBA champion said. Sacramento Kings guard De’Aaron Fox said it was “stupid” to try to hold the game. “If we have to wear a mask and do all of this for a regular game, then what’s the point of bringing the All-Star Game back?” he said. “Obviously, money makes the world go round, so it is what it is.”
K Bawe 2-0 during the encounter. Nyekha scored in the 40th minutes and 54th minutes for Chetheba team. In the quar terfinal round, host village Phüsachodü will play against Chetheba and Rukizuwill take on K Bawe in their respective matches. In men’s volleyball, Chetheba won the first match of the day to progress through the semi-final round. They outclassed Chikri Nasa by 25-15, 25-6 in the encounter. While Phüsachodü team better off Rukizu by 25-21,

LO N D O N, F E B 5 (AGENCIES): Newly-appointed Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel showcased modesty when he said it’s not about his methods at the Stamford Bridge but the talented squad is always willing to learn and that he sees more potential in the side. Thomas Tuchel’s comments came after Chelsea clinched their 2nd successive win in the Premier League, this time over Jose Mourinho’s Tottenham Hotspur. Chelsea sealed a 1-0 win on the road via Jorginho spot kick in the 24th minute after which they held their composure to retain the lead till the final whistle. Since Tuchel took over, Chelsea have drawn against Wolverhampton Wanderers, beat Burnely 2-0 and beat Spurs 1-0. Thursday’s result also saw them move from 7th to 6th in the Premier League table with 36 points, 11 less than leaders Manchester City. Chelsea threatened to add more goals to their tally against Spurs but it remained 1-0 at the final whistle. Young English duo Reece James and Callum Hudson-Odoi caused havoc down the right, Ger-

man striker Timo Werner looked dangerous again and Mason Mount, given a new role as a false nine, showed the kind of tactical flexibility Tuchel loves. “We are super happy about the result. It’s not about my methods. I’m happy with the attitude, the squad, the potential. They are fine guys, it’s a nice group and they are open. It’s a pleasure to be around them,” Tuchel said. “We have a lot of support in the whole club. It was a quick start but an easy one because I feel very welcome.” On the other hand,
Tottenham Hotspur have slipped to the 8th spot on the Premier League table after their third straight defeat. Spurs were on top of the league table in December but pressure is mounting on Jose Mourinho who needs to find a way to stop the slide at the North London side. Mourinho though backed his team to bounce back, saying: “Confidence levels are very, very important to play football. When a team doesn’t have good results, a period when results are not good, you need that click back to go back to normality.”
Olympics facing major issue after Mori’s sexist remarks TOKYO, FEB 5 (AGENCIES): Japan’s Olympic Games faced a “major issue” after the head of the local organising committee made sexist remarks, Tokyo’s governor said on Friday, sending a clear signal the deepening controversy risked tarnishing the global event. Yoshiro Mori, 83, set off a storm on social media both at home and abroad this week by saying that women talked too much, in remarks made in a meeting with the Japan Olympic Committee (JOC). He later retracted the comments and apologised but refused to resign. The incident has cast another dark shadow over the Games, postponed for a year due to the coronavirus pandemic, with just months left before the opening ceremony. The I nte r na tio na l Olympic Committee (IOC) said on Thursday Mori’s apology had settled the issue, but criticism of the octogenarian former prime minister only grew on Fri-
day.
“The mission of the metropolis and the organising committee is to prepare for a safe and secure Games, and we are facing a major issue,” Tokyo Governor Yuriko Koike said. She said she’d heard the Tokyo government was fielding complaint calls from city residents. “I myself was struck speechless by his comments, which should not have been made.” Later, she said Mori had called and apologised directly. But she sidestepped questions about whether she thought he was qualified for the job. “The IOC is a big organisation that is steeped in history and requires a lot of negotiating, and in that sense, the question of who is qualified for the top job is one that requires a decision by the Tokyo 2020 organising committee,” she said. Anger over Mori’s comments is likely to further alienate a Japanese public wary of the government’s attempts to hold the Games

during the pandemic. Nearly 80% of the public opposes holding the Games in July, according to the most recent poll. Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga said he didn’t have the authority to demand Mori’s resignation, the Jiji news agency reported. Yasuhiro Yamashita, head of the JOC, said Mori’s comments went against the Olympic spirit and were inappropriate, a view cabinet ministers echoed. Angry and frustrated Japanese athletes, activists and ordinary women see Mori’s remarks as a clear signal that gender equality in Japanese sports, and society as a whole, remains a distant dream. “This is the reality
of what women in Japan are facing every day. Old guys with outdated mindsets continue to hold power and are making decisions,” said a female staffer at the Tokyo 2020 Organizing Committee, who declined to be identified because she was not authorised to speak to the media. “Unfortunately in this country, social pressure prohibits women from speaking out about inequality - which makes yesterday’s sexism row even more significant for Japan.” Japan persistently trails its peers in promoting gender equality, ranking 121 out of 153 nations surveyed in the 2020 global gender gap report of the World Economic Forum. “I felt anger for the first time in a while,” pro soccer player Shiho Shimoyamada said in a tweet. “It’s absolutely meaningless to retract remarks already out in the open. Unless you actually acknowledge prejudice and take steps against it, the same thing will just happen again.

South Africa’s Anrich Nortje (C) celebrates after taking the wicket of Pakistan’s Babar Azam, in Rawalpindi. (AP/PTI)
RAWALPINDI, FEB 5 (IANS): South Africa lost four wickets on the second day of their second Test against Pakistan after fast bowler Anrich Nortje’s fivewicket haul helped them dismiss the hosts for 272 runs on Friday. Visiting captain Quinton de Kock’s quickfire 24 off 11 balls helped them
end the day on a positive note and they will resume the Day 3 on an overnight score of 106 runs for four wickets. Fast bowler Hasan Ali struck twice off consecutive deliveries, dismissing opener Dean Elgar (15 off 21) and No.3 Rassie van der Dussen for a first-ball
duck. He failed to complete a hat-trick, but Pakistan continued to trouble the South Africans. Faheem Ashraf, who scored an unbeaten 78, struck with the wicket of Faf du Plessis after which spinner Nauman Ali got opener Aiden Markram. de Kock then hit five fours, three of which came in the second-last over of the day off Yasir Shah, to push South Africa past the 100run mark. Earlier, Ashraf and captain Babar Azam put up a 123-run stand for the fourth wicket to help Pakistan bounce back from being 22 for the loss of three wickets. Azam fell to Nortje after which Ashraf and Fawad Alam looked set for putting up another big partnership before the latter was run out on 45, thanks to a brilliant direct hit from Temba Bavuma. Ashraf then batted with the tail to push Pakistan past the 250-run mark. Brief scores: Pakistan 272 all out (Faheem Ashraf 78 not out, Babar Azam 77; Anrich Nortje 5/56) South Africa 106/4 (Aiden Markram 32, Quinton de Kock 24 batting; Hasan Ali 2/29)
MELBOURNE, FEB 5 (AGENCIES): All 507 Australian Open players and staff who stayed at a quarantine hotel where a worker contracted COVID-19 have tested negative and been cleared to participate in the Grand Slam, tournament director Craig Tiley said on Friday. “Everyone that tested, tested negative,” Tiley told reporters at Melbourne Park on Friday. “So that’s a really good outcome not only for the community but also for the playing group.” Health officials said on Wednesday that a worker at the Grand Hyatt hotel had contracted the virus, prompting the testing and quarantining of 160 players, as well as coaches and Australian Open officials. Warm-up matches at Melbourne Park were called off on Thursday but re-
sumed on Friday. Of the more than 1,200 players, coaches and officials flown in for the tournament, there have been eight COVID-19 infections. Spain’s Paula Badosa, the women’s world number 67, was the only player to contract the coronavirus. She was released from hotel quarantine on Wednesday. Victoria state, of which Melbourne is the capital, reported no new cases of community transmission on Friday. Authorities have approved 30,000 fans per day, about 50% capacity, at the Australian Open, which starts on Monday. “Spectators will continue to be allowed in the site, and we are still selling tickets,” Tiley said on radio station 3AW. “The site will be an extremely safe place.”

Root scores 3rd consecutive ton; B’luru FC, Chennaiyin FC play out goalless draw England take upper hand in 1st Test M A R G A O, F E B 5 (AGENCIES): Bengaluru FC and Chennaiyin play out a goalless draw in an Indian Super League (ISL) clash on Friday at the Fatorda Stadium in Goa. It was yet another frustrating night for the Marina Machans who despite having several chances to score could not find the back of the net. Bengaluru started the game strong, attacking from the get go and looking for an early lead, with their first chance coming as early as in the 2nd minute. Paartalu tried to pick Chhetri with a pass over the Chennaiyin defence, but Enes Sipovic managed to shield the ball for Vishal Kaith to come off his line and collect. Minutes later, Gurpreet Singh Sandhu was tested at the other end when Esmael Goncalves won the ball in the midfield, ran towards the box and took a shot from distance that the Bengaluru custodian parried away. Rahim Ali’s effort from the rebound was straight into the ’keeper’s gloves. The Blues’ best chance of the half came in the 34th minute when Erik picked out Harmanjot

First, he got a strong hand to push away Germanpreet Singh effort from outside the box and then Esmael, one-on-one with Gurpreet, saw his effort blocked. Spanish midfielder Xisco Hernandez came on for the final quarter hour and almost made an immediate impact when his lob over the Chennaiyin defence was headed home by Fran Gonzalez but the assistant had his flag up for offside. At the other end, Gurpreet made another fingertip save to deny Lallianzuala Chhangte after the winger was played through by Esmael. Zverev, Struff seal Germany’s spot in ATP Cup semis
MELBOURNE, FEB 5 (IANS): Alexander Zverev bounced back after a tough singles defeat to world number one Novak Djokovic on Friday to help Germany seal their spot in the semi-finals of the ATP Cup for the first time. Zverev partnered JanLennard Struff to register a 7-6(4), 5-7, 10-7 win in the deciding doubles rubber against Djokovic and Nikola Cacic. Struff was Germany’s hero, having earlier won the No. 2 singles against DusanLajovic, before teaming with Zverev to seal the tie for Germany 2-1, knocking out the defending champion. Germany advances to face Russia, the Group D winner, in Saturday’s semifinals, with the final to be played on Sunday. Team Russia is led by the double threat of Daniil Medvedev and Andrey Rublev, who are both ranked inside the Top 10 in the ATP rankings. Djokovic at every opportunity and directing as much traffic as possible to the more inexperienced Cacic. In last year’s ATP Cup final, Djokovic backed up from his singles win over Rafael Nadal to partner Viktor Troicki in the deciding doubles, which earned Serbia the inaugural title.
In the No.1 singles match, Djokovic extended his record at the ATP Cup to 11 straight wins after winning a three-set thriller against Zverev 6-7(3), 6-2, 7-5 to keep defending Serbia alive in the tie. “I thought we both played well,” Djokovic said on court. “He definitely had
a big serving match. It was so difficult to play against him today. Missiles from the other side of the court, both first and second serve. He was going for it, not too many double faults. You’ve got to give him credit for being courageous and trying his best... Overall it was a very enjoyable match.” There was little to separate between Zverev and Djokovic throughout a tense opening set under the roof in Rod Laver Arena. There were no break-points on offer as both players leaned on big first serves to take control of the rallies. Zverev pulled away in the tie-break and closed out the set with an ace. The Serbian adjusted his return position to deal with Zverev’s powerful second serves, the German gambling with first-serve levels of speed and power. Djokovic took a step back and was rewarded with his first break of the match. He reeled off three games in a row to take a 5-2 lead with a perfectly placed lob landing plumb on the line.
CHENNAI, FEB 5 (IANS): England captain Joe Root’s third consecutive Test century (128 batting) and his 200-run stand for the third wicket with opener Dom Sibley helped the visitors reach 263 for three wickets at stumps on the first day of their first Test against India at the M.A. Chidambaram Stadium on Friday. Root became the ninth batsman to slam a century in his 100th Test. Fast bowler JaspritBumrah dismissed Sibley on 87 off the last ball of the day to help India end it on a positive note for themselves. However, Sibley and Root’s partnership, coupled with a 63-run opening stand between the former and Rory Burns helped England take the upper hand on the first day of the Test. England won the toss and chose to bat at the Chepauk Stadium. India opted to play three spinners in Ravichandran Ashwin, Washington Sundar and Shahbaz Nadeem along with two fast bowlers Ishant Sharma and Bumrah. a wicket in an attritional first session of the match. However, Ashwin got the breakthrough for the hosts as Burns mistimed a reverse sweep off the spinner. The ball lobed up into the air and wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant completed a simple catch. Just two overs later, Bumrah dismissed Dan Lawrence, who came in at one down, on a duck to force Root to walk in for the last over of the session. Root and Sibley then ensured that England did not lose a wicket in the next session and almost repeated that in the final session of the day. However, Bumrah trapped Sibley
in front of his leg stump with a delivery that was pitched high. The umpire raised his finger and Sibley reviewed the decision, only for it to be confirmed by the replays. The umpires called stumps with the fall of that wicket. Root walked back to the pavilion having scored his 20th Test century. He had scored 186 and 228 in England’s last two Tests against Sri Lanka. He has hit 14 fours and one six thus far in the innings. BRIEF SCORES: England 263/3 (Joe Root 128 batting, Dom Sibley 87; JaspritBumrah 2/40) vs India.
Copa America may allow fans at stadiums
BUENOS AIRES, FEB 5 (IANS): This year’s Copa America is likely to be played with the presence of fans at stadiums, the South American Football Confederation (CONMEBOL) has said. The competition is due to be held in Colombia and Argentina from June 11 to July 10, having been postponed by a year because of the Covid-19 pandemic, reports Xinhua
news agency. It will be the first time that the world’s oldest continental football tournament will be played in two countries. “I am very optimistic after speaking with the sports ministers of the two countries. There is a high probability that there will be fans,” CONMEBOL president Alejandro Dominguez said in an interview broadcast on Argentine
television. “Both countries have very ambitious vaccination policies and they expect to reach almost 50 per cent (of the population) before June. And to that, one adds the (herd) immunity that is generated.” Last December, Dominguez said the Copa America would be “impossible” without fans because of the competition’s dependence on gate receipts.

Serena Williams
MELBOURNE, FEB 5 (AGENCIES): Serena Williams has withdrawn from her Yarra Valley Classic semi-final against world number one Ashleigh Barty with a right shoulder injury. Williams had earlier beaten fellow American Danielle Collins 6-2 4-6 10-6 in the last eight in Melbourne. Australian Barty, who won 7-5 2-6 10-4 against American Shelby Rogers, has received a walkover into the final. Williams will be seeking a record-equalling 24th Grand Slam singles title at the Australian Open. The first Slam of the

year begins on Monday and all six ATP and WTA warm-up events are being held at Melbourne Park. Williams, 39, won her last major title at the Australian Open in 2017. She missed the 2018 competition and reached the quarter-finals in 2019, but fell in the third round last year. Barty will play either Garbine Mugur uza or Marketa Vondrousova in the final. Spain’s Mugur uza thrashed Australian Open champion Sofia Kenin 6-2 6-2 in a rematch of last year’s final. America’s Kenin made 28 unforced errors and left
the court in tears after the 77-minute defeat. Czech Vondrousova beat Nadia Podoroska of Argentina 3-6 6-3 10-4. Third sets in the WTA are being played over a 10-point super tie-break following the delay to the tournaments because of Covid-19 testing. Azarenka through but Halep out Victoria Azarenka saved two match points in her first match of the year to beat Kazakhstan’s YuliaPutintseva and reach the Grampians Trophy quarter-finals. The Belarussian, who is a two-time Australian Open champion, overcame
a dreadful second set to win 6-4 1-6 11-9. She will play Estonia’s AnettKontaveit next after the sixth seed beat Bethanie Mattek-Sands 7-5 7-5. Angelique Kerber, a former world number one and the 2016 champion at Melbourne Park, beat OnsJabeur 6-4 6-4 to set up a quarter-final against Maria Sakkari. However, top seed Simona Halep appeared to struggle with a lower back problem as she lost her Gippsland Trophy quarterfinal. Two-time Grand Slam champion Halep won the first two games of the match against Ekaterina Alexandrova before the Russian breezed past her 6-2 6-1. Halep received medical attention after the first set and was given a lower back brace but her movement and power was lacking throughout the match.
