NGBF calls for PR and postponing of polls
DIMAPUR, JAN 4
(NPN): Nagaland Gaon Burah Federation (NGBF) has called for postponing the State Assembly election and favoured imposition of President’s Rule in the State to ensure an acceptable and honourable solution to the Naga political issue.
NGBF in a statement mentioned that it was convinced that although elections were a necessity in a democratic world, it was not advisable at this hour in Nagaland.
“Let elections be postponed in favour of President’s Rule to ensure honorable and acceptable solution is achieved,” the federation stated.
Conveying people’s will, the federation also urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah to take a call on the Naga issue, claiming that it had
Four BF.7 cases of Covid detected in West Bengal
SAGAR ISLAND (WB), JAN 4 (PTI): Four cases of Omicron subvariant BF.7 were detected in West Bengal, a health official said on Wednesday.
Genome sequencing of the four people, who have recently returned from the US, confirmed that they were infected with the new variant of the coronavirus, he said.
The condition of the four patients is stable, he said.
Of the four people, three are of the same family and are native of Nadia district, while one person hails from Bihar but currently resides in Kolkata, the official told PTI.
The state health department has found that a total of 33 people have come in contact with these four infected people.
“All the 33 people are healthy and we are monitoring their condition as well,” he said.
Since last month, the samples of all people arriving at Kolkata airport from abroad who tested positive for COVID-19 were collected for genome sequencing.
Last week, two persons, including a foreign national, tested positive for COVID-19 at Kolkata airport, and their genome sequencing later confirmed they were infected with the BF.7 subvariant of Omicron.
The current surge in Covid-19 infections in China is believed to be driven by the BF.7 sub-variant of Omicron.
felt the pulse of the people at the grassroots ever since the announcement of conclusion of talks with all entities by Centre’s former Interlocutor RN Ravi on October 31, 2019.
“Time for hon’ble Prime Minister to fulfil his assurance on Naga issue,” NGBF stated.
NGBF further declared that it was duty bound to extend solidarity to the people should they go ahead and refrain from participating in the democratic process, if the political leadership at the Centre focused solely on election and not on Indo-Naga political solution. It cautioned of being compelled to take a decision whether to participate or boycott the forthcoming election.
The federation said it was aware that the Central government and NSCN (IM) had declared successful

conclusion of political talks on August 3, 2015. The folly was ignoring major stakeholders in the peace process, it added.
Thereafter, to pursue an inclusive solution, it pointed out that the Centre had officially invited Working Committee of Naga National Political Groups (WC, NNPGs) comprising of seven different Naga armed groups to the negotiating table on September 27, 2017, before officially concluding negotiations with all entities on October 31, 2019.
NGBF stated that it
understood the intricacies of the Indian system, so also among the two negotiating Naga entities, besides the position of the Centre on symbolic matters.
It asserted that the clearest stand and position of Nagaland tribes, relevant Naga civil society organisations and common people was that the Prime Minister must announce the settlement based on what was negotiated and agreed upon, once and for all.
The federation insisted that the slogan “Election for Solution” should never be used twice and warned that any delay would hurt the sentiment of the people of Nagaland.
“Threats and intimidations by anti-solution elements cannot subdue the overwhelming demand for an honourable solution.
Naga people in Manipur, Arunachal Pradesh and
Assam too have openly expressed their desire for an acceptable political settlement,” the statement read.
NGBF also said it understood the genuine grievances of Eastern Naga People’s Organisation (ENPO) and alleged that the delay by the Centre in announcing Naga settlement was related to sensitive political and administrative discrepancies in the region over the years. Hence, it claimed that resolving the Naga political issue and post solution realignments of flawed political and administrative status would fulfil the aspiration of Eastern Nagaland tribes.
The federation pointed out that boycotting and abstaining from electoral process either by Eastern Nagaland People’s Organisation (ENPO) or Central Nagaland Tribes Council (CNTC) would serious -
ly dent the image of the world’s largest democratic nation and its political leadership. However, since the matter was about a political struggle that was more than eight decades old, it pointed out that the people had the right to express themselves, in the knowledge that negotiations had already concluded.
Meanwhile, NGBF said it was keenly awaiting the proposed visits of Shah and Modi to the State on January 6 and 10 respectively.
The federation recalled that its members– as village elders, headmen, guardians and custodians of preBritish Naga customary heritage and usages – had met the Prime Minister at his office in New Delhi in 2017 and urged him to pursue an inclusive path and expedite the solution to the Indo-Naga political issue.
WHO ‘really concerned’ about surge in Covid cases
GENEVA, JAN 4 (AGENCIES): The World Health Organisation says it is concerned about “risk to life” in China amid a surge in COVID-19 cases, while in Europe and the US the Omicron subvariant XBB.1.5 is spreading rapidly.
On Wednesday, the WHO confirmed XBB.1.5 is the most transmissible variant so far, but said so far it did not appear to cause more serious illness.
Scientists say XBB.1.5 is about as good at dodging antibodies from vaccines and infection as its XBB and XBB.1 relatives, which were two of the most immune evasive subvariants yet. But XBB.1.5 has a mutation that makes it bind more tightly to
cells, which gives it a growth advantage.
It evolved from the XBB variant of Omicron, itself a fusion of two different BA.2 variants - BA.2.10.1 and BA.2.75.
Speaking at a news conference, WHO directorgeneral Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said the UN agency was “following closely and assessing the risk” of XBB.1.5.
“We are really concerned about the current COVID-19 epidemiological picture, with both intense transmission in several parts of the world and a recombinant subvariant spreading quickly.” More than 40% of COVID cases in the US are now caused by the XBB.1.5
Dr Tedros Ghebreyesus
variant and scientists have warned it could be the one to “watch out for” this year.
It was originally detected in October 2022 and has now been identified in more than 25 countries, including the UK.
Dr Tedros said the WHO had reiterated to China “the importance of vaccination, including booster doses to protect
Amit Shah to meet state legislators, BJP leaders
DIMAPUR, JAN 4 (NPN): Union Home Minister Amit Shah, who is scheduled to visit Nagaland on January 6, is likely to meet state legislators and State BJP party leaders, sources said. Sources had told Nagaland Post that Shah will be arriving Dimapur from Imphal and hold meeting with state leaders before leaving for Delhi the same day.
Though Shah had reportedly assured the ENPO delegation during December 6 meeting that he would personally visit Eastern Nagaland by January 2023, it was not clear whether he would be meeting ENPO representatives.
Sources, however, said that Shah’s proposed visit to Eastern
Nagaland this month would be finalized only after submission of a report by the three-member Home ministry committee on ‘Frontier Nagaland’ demand.
Meanwhile, according to reports, Amit Shah’s flight was diverted to Guwahati due to thick fog in Agartala on Wednesday due to poor visibility caused by thick fog.
The flight was diverted to Guwahati’s Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport where it landed, ATC sources said.
Shah was scheduled to arrive at Agartala on Wednesday night and the next day, flag off two rath yatras in Tripura, where assembly polls are due early this year.
against hospitalisation, severe disease and death”.
“We continue to ask China for more rapid, regular, reliable data on hospitalisations and deaths, as well as more comprehensive, real-time viral sequencing,” he said. China’s recent COVID-19 outbreak is predominantly led by the Omicron subvariants BA.5.2 and BF.7, which together account for 97.5% of all local infections.
The WHO said this data, provided by the Chinese Centre for Disease Control and Prevention, was in line with genomes from travellers from China submitted by other countries.
No new variant or mutation of known significance
was noted in the data.
On Saturday, England joined a growing list of countries demanding a pre-departure negative COVID test for travellers from China.
WHO has warned that China is under-representing the true impact of Covid in the country - in particular deaths. The removal of most restrictions last month has led to a surge in cases.
But China has stopped publishing daily cases data, and has announced only 22 Covid deaths since December, using its own strict criteria. “We believe that definition [of a Covid death] is too narrow,” WHO emergencies director Dr Michael Ryan said.
NLF demands PR for Naga political solution
DIMAPUR, JAN 4 (NPN):
A newly formed plank comprising of leaders and former legislators and others was formed under the banner of ‘Like Minded Naga Leaders’ Forum’ (LMNLF) which has demanded imposition of President’s Rule in Nagaland to accord priority towards solution to decadesold Naga political issue instead of elections.
This was the decision made by the LMNLF at a meeting of the forum held in Dimapur on Tuesday, stated Hukavi Zhimomi the forum convener. He also said that the leaders at the meeting noted that things were complex while Nagaland has again been placed at a crossroad and hence solution to the Naga issue was the answer and not elections.
According to the convenor of LMNLF, a leader at the meeting had categorically stated that Nagas want solution “now and urgently” but negotiating parties were not ready. He also said there was “no unanimity between New Delhi and Naga organisations.” Also no decision has been taken over the demand for statehood by ENPO, he said. Therefore, in the light of these, LMNLF maintained that President’s Rule should be imposed as it was the “only viable option.”
The leader also alleged that the present government was not performing well and the Central government and Naga negotiating parties had also not reached any consensus to sign a peace agreement. Hence, he concluded that it would be appropriate to have the State government dismissed and Nagaland placed under President’s Rule. He claimed that Nagaland was not ready
World to witness 4 eclipse events this year; 2 will be visible in India
INDORE, JAN 4 (PTI):
Four eclipse events including a total solar eclipse would occur in 2023 and two of them would be visible in India, an astronomy expert said here on Wednesday.
There would be two solar eclipses and two lunar eclipses, said Dr Rajendra Prakash Gupt, Superintendent of Ujjain’s Government Jiwaji Observatory. The celestial events will start with a total solar eclipse on April 20. “But it will not be visible from India,” Dr Gupt said.
It will be followed by a ‘penumbral’ lunar eclipse on
the intervening night of May 5-6 which will be visible in India, he said.
A penumbral lunar eclipse occurs when the Moon passes through penumbra or lighter part of Earth’s shadow, and sunlight falling on the Moon appears to be partially cut off. The Moon remains visible, but with less-than-usual brightness.
The only `annular solar eclipse’ will take place on the intervening night of October 14 and 15, but it would not be visible in the country as it would happen at night.
A partial lunar eclipse would occur on the intervening night of October 28 and 29 and it will be visible in India. As much as 12.6 percent of the Moon will remain in Earth’s shadow during this eclipse, Dr Gupt said.
In 2022, there were two total lunar eclipses and two partial solar eclipses, he said.
A solar eclipse occurs when the Moon comes between the Sun and Earth, while a lunar eclipse takes place when Earth is positioned between the Sun and the Moon.
for election besides, it would also not serve any purpose. He also cited the stand of the Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee president K Therie who has also demanded imposition of President’s Rule in the State. According to Hukavi, those who participated at the meeting included C Apok Jamir, and Ralanthung Yanthan. All the participants felt that the demand of Eastern Nagaland People’s Organisation (ENPO) for statehood due to lack of development and welfare measures in ENPO region was genuine. They also expressed support to ENPO demand “in principle” as “some people in power had ignored the region and so the people had every right to ventilate their grievances.” The LMNLF however, reiterated that it was not in favour of division of Nagaland. They also opined that the issues raised by ENPO , particularly the issue of corruption by those responsible should be looked into.
It may be recalled that during a closed-door meeting held in Dimapur in August last year, around 35 ex-parliamentarians, candidates, some sitting legislators, retired bureaucrats and young politicians had contemplated on floating a new party with the objective of forming the next government in the State. After recognising the need to throw an alternative to the present set up, the group had decided to work together to contest the ensuing 2023 election either by joining a political party or forming a new one so as to prevent a cake walk in 2023 for the present NDPP-BJP alliance.

BJP national leaders prepare blueprint for state assembly polls MMK flays Dec 24 murder
DIMAPUR, JAN 4 (NPN):
With about a week remaining for announcement of poll schedule for Nagaland, if election is to take place, the BJP has started the process of reviewing the party’s preparation for the upcoming assembly elections in states going to the polls this year including Nagaland.
Nagaland, Tripura and Meghalaya will be the first to have the Assembly polls, most likely in FebruaryMarch. The terms of their respective legislative Assemblies are ending on different dates in March.
Central BJP leaders have held talks with the core group leaders from Tripura, Meghalaya and
Nagaland to discuss the upcoming assembly elections in the state.
In Nagaland, BJP national secretary and coincharge of North East Rituraj Sinha, national spokesperson and BJP in charge of Nagaland Nalin Kohli and other senior leaders from the party held a meeting
with all district presidents, mandal presidents, mandal in-charges and mandal vistaraks at the BJP state office in Kohima on January 3. The meeting was also attended by State BJP president and minister Temjen Imna Along, deputy CM Y. Patton and Rajya Sabha MP S. Phangnon Konyak.
Sinha also called on chief minister Neiphiu Rio on Wednesday at his residence. Taking to Twitter, Sinha said he had met chief minister Neiphiu and had a “detailed discussion on various political issues.”
The Assembly polls this year are being considered as semi-finals to the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.
Key states of Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh and Telangana would go for polls this year, besides states from the North East. The union territory of Jammu and Kashmir may also have elections this year after the Centre takes a decision.
Meanwhile, BJP chief J.P. Nadda will chair a meeting of the party’s general secretaries on January 10 to discuss various issues. The party is holding a series of meetings with agendas linked to the Assembly elections in nine states and the 2024 Lok Sabha election.
As per reports, a detailed strategy will be laid down and the party has decided to increase the visits of senior leaders and Union ministers in Tripura, Meghalaya and Nagaland. The central leaders will spend time in these states to increase the Northeast connection of the Modi government.

Thejakolie, one of its member.
While condemning the murder committed by its member, Thejakolie, MMK said there are no words to ever justify “such a heinous crime” and unthinkable that “someone could murder his wife with such brutality”.
The Krotho further termed the condemnation
against the murder by Chozubami village council, Chozubami women society and Chozubami youth association as “well justified.” While mourning the death of Khrutalu, who it said was “one of us too”, MMK urged the responsible authorities to award befitting punishment to “this unworthy husband.” MMK also pleaded with the family of Khrutalu and the people of Chozubami village to not “let this tragic incident, created by Thejakolie, strain the relationship between us.” MMK stated that the children of Khrutalu “may remain a bond to continue with the good will between the families of both sides.

K Bawe gate, water supply project inaugurated
Correspondent
KOHIMA, JAN 4 (NPN): A water supply project and village entrance gate at Khulazu Bawe were inaugurated by Dr. Chotisuh Sazo MLA and District Programme Officer (Social Welfare), Mokokchung, Meshusayi Tetseo respectively on December 31, 2022.
In a short speech at the inaugural programme, Dr Sazo said the UDA government headed by chief minister Neiphiu Rio had been trying its best to facilitate the Naga political solution.
Sazo said Rio had led all the 60 elected representatives of the 11th Legislative Assembly to meet with the Prime Minister, Home Minister and Union Ministers during which the former apprised them about the political talks and requested them to bring about an early solution.
Even in the 12th House, Dr. Sazo said when he was NLA Speaker, the PWC went to Delhi twice and met Prime Minister, home minister and other union ministers and leaders of various national political parties.
In the present 13th
House of NLA, he said that under the leadership of Rio, Parliamentary Committee on Naga Political Issue was formed with all 60 legislators and 2 MPs out of which a Core Committee consisting of
political parties, tribes and MPs have had several meetings with different groups of Naga political Groups and Government of India representatives and union home minister.
However, Sazo said
since the legislators were only facilitators, the final settlement or solution depended on government of India and the negotiating parties.
He said that if solution did not arrive, the state
general election to the 14th House of NLA would be held in time along with other states which was likely to be held in the later part of February or first week of March 2023.
He opined that it was
villagers to vote consciously and not sell their vote, which he added was their right.
The programme was chaired by NDPP 18th Chozuba A/C, general secretary, Veyizo Kezo, while Khulazu Bawe village council chairman Khusahü Medeo delivered welcome address.

Cops pick up editor of local daily in Mnp
Release him after 2 hours

IMPHAL, JAN 4: Editor of a local Manipuri daily Sanaleibak, Hemantakumar Ningomba, was picked up by a team of Irilbung police station of Imphal East district from his residence at Khongman early in the morning only to be release after around two hours of detention in the police station. A source related the picking up of the editor to a statement he had given during a panel discussion on the current issue of the state in a local TV channel. In the discussion, he reportedly stated that if the state government was sincere enough to end the poppy cultivation practice, help of two ‘powerful’ women were needed.
Hemantakumar Ningomba
The editor, however, did not mention the details of the two women.
A joint meeting of the All Manipur Working Journalists’ Union (AMWJU ) and Editors’ Guild, Manipur (EGM) held at the Manipur Press Club, Imphal, at 10 am on Wednesday, strongly condemned the police action. “If such avoidable incidents happen again, the journalist fraternity will not take it lying down and all efforts to safeguard the journalists of the state will be taken up, including legal action,” a joint statement of scribe bodies signed by AMWJU president Wangkhemcha
Shamjai and Khogendra Khomdram warned. It stated that Hemantakumar is a respected editor and is not an absconder and the manner he was picked up for his statement in a panel discussion in a local TV channel affects his dignity and stature in the society.
The concerned officers could have simply invited him for a discussion during the office hours as no case has been registered against him and he was set free after some hours, it added. On the other hand, Democratic Students’ Alliance of Manipur (DESAM) expressed strong resentment over the picking up of the editor by the police. Hemantakumar Ningomba is a senior citizen and public intellectual besides being an editor of a local daily. He has the right to express his opinion on policy and programmes of the government as a citizen as well as an editor.

AGARTALA, JAN 4
(PTI): Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha on Wednesday released the BJP-IPFT government’s report card containing a synopsis of the performance of the present dispensation, as the northeastern state gears up for the Assembly elections, due in February.
The chief minister claimed that the BJP-IPFT government has done “enormous” development and welfare works in Tripura and more are in the pipeline.
He pointed out that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had said that development projects in the northeast region would be based on the concept of ‘HIRA (Highways, Inland Waterways, Railways and Airways) and he has kept the promise by extending full cooperation to the state.
“The state has six national highways while seven more have been sanctioned to boost connectivity. A sum of Rs 10,222 crore has been sanctioned for making the state’s lifeline from Churaibari to Agartala”, Saha said
at a programme here. The northeastern state has the third and strongest Internet Gateway bringing the entire world on its hands, he said adding as many as 12 express trains are being extended to the state.
“One inter-city train connecting Guwahati with Agartala will be flagged off shortly to boost rail connectivity”, he pointed out.
Temporary Jamiat office, shops demolished in Assam One more NPP legislator quits party
NAGAON (ASSAM), JAN 4 (PTI): The Nagaon district administration on Wednesday demolished a temporary office of the local unit of the Jamiat-eUlema and some half-constructed shops, allegedly constructed on encroached land, a district official said.
The construction was allegedly done on the playground of Sonaighat Government School and the demolition was carried out after complaints from the school authorities, Circle Officer Ishan Kumar Singh told reporters.
The land was allegedly encroached by a local Jamiat office bearer Nurul Amin Choudhury who built a temporary office of the organisation and initiated the construction of around ten shops.
The school authorities had given a written complaint to the district authorities and after a de-
tailed investigation of the land records, it was decided to carry out the demolition, Singh said.
A teacher, Mainul Haque Choudhury, said that the authorities had written to the administration as the children were unable to play because of the illegal construction in the playground There were several attempts to contact the Jamiat office-bearer, who locals claimed is the treasurer of the local unit, with reporters going to his house here but he refused to talk to the media.
Other Jamiat members too refused to comment on the demolition, stating they were awaiting details.
A massive eviction drive was carried out on encroached land at Batadrava in Nagaon district last month affecting nearly 1,000 families.
SHILLONG, JAN 4: Ahead of the assembly election, ruling National People’s Party (NPP) legislator, S.G. Esmatur Mominin on Wednesday resigned from the party as well as from the Meghalaya legislative assembly.
The former legislator is expected to join West Bengal-based Trinamool Congress on Thursday. He is the third legislator from the NPP to quit the party .
With the resignation of Mominin, the effective strength of the present assembly has reduced to 53 members in the 60-member legislative assembly.
Mominin’s resignation followed after the NPP declared former Assembly Speaker Abu Taher Mondal as the party candidate from Phulbari assembly constituency in West Garo Hills district. Mondal had recently joined the NPP after the quitting the Congress. On December 19, former Congress minister, Dr. Mazel
Ampareen Lyngdoh and her party colleague Mohendro Rapsang gave up their membership from the assembly and joined the NPP.
This number would come down further with several other members slated to resign ahead of the assembly elections in 2023. The mind of the other two suspended Congress legislators – Process T. Sawkmie (Mawlai) and Mayralborn Syiem (Nongpoh) is yet to be known although there are reports that they would be joining the United Democratic Party, a key ally in theruling Meghalaya Democratic Alliance coalition .
Two People’s Demo -
cratic Front legislators, including Information and Technology Minister Hamletson Dohling and Jason Sawkmie Mawlong and Hill State People’s Democratic Party legislator Samlin Malangiang are set to join the NPP. Trinamool Congress legislator Himalaya Muktan Shangpliang and two NPP legislators — Ferlin C. A. Sangma and Benedic R. Marak - resigned as members of the state legislative assembly and joined the BJP.
Shangpliang, a former bureaucrat, represents Mawsynram constituency in East Khasi Hills district. Sangma was also a bureaucrat before joining active politics and is a representative from Selsella and Marak from Raksamgre in Garo Hills region.
Another Independent legislator, Samuel Sangma (Baghmara) joined the BJP as an associate member after disassociating from the UDP, although he didn’t resign from the assembly.
“We had promised to the people that a report card will be released before the 2023 Assembly elections. Today, the government presented its performance on all fronts for the past 58 months”, the chief minister said.
The BJP-IPFT alliance came to power in Tripura in 2018 by ending 25 years rule of the CPI(M)-led Left
Front. The chief minister said, “We are all passengers of a train who are bound to follow in the footsteps of the Prime Minister. Sometimes, we feel that time is inadequate to complete the entire syllabus. We have done enormous development and welfare works and more are in the pipeline”.
Saha also highlighted the government’s achieve-
ment in the spheres of agriculture, education, health, law, tribal welfare, and home and infrastructure development since 2018.
“Recently, 12 per cent DA was given to the employees and pensioners while two more instalments of DA were given earlier,” he said.
Quoting a National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) report, the chief minister also took a potshot at the opposition claiming that the law and order situation is better now than the Left Front rule.
“Out of 28 states, Tripura stays among the bottom-line 7 states as far crime is concerned. The opposition parties are trying to create unrest and put the blame on the government”, he said. Deputy Chief Minister Jishnu Dev Varma said after many years, the northeastern state is on the path of all-around development.
“Despite the Covid-19 pandemic, the government did exceptionally well to meet the people’s aspirations during the past 58 months,” he claimed.

NEW DELHI, JAN 4 (PTI): The Enforcement Directorate on Wednesday said it has attached assets worth more than Rs 10 crore in a money laundering investigation against former Maharashtra minister Anil Parab and others.
Parab, 58, is a Shiv Sena leader from the Uddhav Thackeray faction of the party. He has been questioned by the federal agency in this case earlier. Delhi hit-and-run: Doctor refutes victim being drunk
NEW DELHI, JAN 4 (PTI): The family doctor of the woman, who was killed after being hit and dragged by a car here, rejected her friend’s claims that she was heavily drunk on the night of the incident, saying the autopsy report did not find any trace of alcohol in her stomach.
The victim’s friend, who was riding pillion on her scooty, had told the media that Anjali was drunk and had insisted on driving the two-wheeler on the fateful night.
Anjali was killed in the early hours of the New Year after her scooter was hit by a car, which dragged her for 12 kilometres. Her body was found in outer Delhi’s Kanjhawala.
Five men who were allegedly in the car have been booked for culpable homicide among other sections. All five accused were sent to a three-day police custody on Monday.
“According to the autopsy report, there was
food inside the stomach. If she would have been drunk, the report would have mentioned the presence of a chemical. But the report says only food has been detected (inside the stomach),” Bhupesh told reporters.
Bhupesh said this was not a normal murder.
“A murder is considered sadistic when a victim is brutally tortured before death. As per the autopsy report, she suffered
SC stays HC order asking UP to hold urban local body polls
NEW DELHI, JAN 4 (PTI): The Supreme Court on Wednesday stayed the Allahabad High Court order directing the Uttar Pradesh government to hold urban local body polls without reservation for the OBCs.
A bench comprising Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud and Justice P S Narasimha took note of the submissions of Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, appearing for the state government, and directed that a panel appointed by the state government will have to decide the OBC quota related issues for the local bodies poll by March 31, 2023.
The top court permitted the state government to appoint administrators to run the affairs of the local
bodies after the expiry of the tenure of the elected representatives.
It, however, said the administrators will not be empowered to take major policy decisions.
The top court had earlier agreed to hear the Uttar Pradesh government’s appeal challenging the high court order quashing its draft notification on urban local body elections and directing it to hold the polls without reservation for other backward classes.
The Lucknow bench of the high court had ordered that the state government notify the polls “immediately” as the term of several municipalities would end by January 31, while annulling the December 5 draft notification.
40 injuries,” the doctor said.
The victim’s friend had earlier said the five men accused of dragging the woman under their car killed her deliberately as they kept driving despite knowing she was stuck under the vehicle.
Recalling the fateful night, Anjali’s friend, who was traced by the police after they examined the CCTV footage, said they had gone to meet some friends at a hotel on New Year eve and alleged that despite being
‘drunk’, the victim wanted to ride the scooter after the party.
Contrary to other eyewitness accounts, the victim’s friend asserted that no music was playing in the car that hit them and claimed that the driver was aware that Anjali was being dragged under the wheels.
Stopquestioning Kanjhawalavictim’s ‘character’: DCW Delhi Commission for Women chief Swati Maliwal on Wednesday urged people to stop questioning the morals of the Kanjhawla victim in the aftermath of claims made by her friend who was accompanying her at the time of the accident.
Delhi Commission For Women Chairperson Maliwal questioned why she had kept silent till the police traced her on the basis of footage from CCTV cameras.
“Anjali’s friend has put the blame on her. She was with Anjali when the
accident happened. She left from the spot and went home. Didn’t she feel the need to inform (the) police or Anjali’s family about what had happened?
“She could have followed the car that was dragging Anjali, who must have been crying for help. She could have done something so that Anjali’s life could have been saved. What kind of friend is she?,” Maliwal said.
Demanding a probe into the friend’s claims, Maliwal said Singh died a painful death and she should not suffer “character assassination”.
“She died a painful death. She was dragged on Delhi’s roads for 12 kilometres and her body was found naked. The claims of her friend need to be investigated. Anjali should not be blamed for what happened to her. The accused should be hanged,” she said.
Singh was cremated on Tuesday.
Delhi woman gets ‘acid attack’ threat from neighbour
NEW DELHI, JAN 4 (PTI): A 19-year-old woman has accused her neighbour in east Delhi’s Pandav Nagar here of threatening her with “acid attack” if she did not marry him, police said on Wednesday.
The police said the matter came to light on Sunday after the victim filed a complaint. The victim alleged that Yagvender Yadav Yadav (27), who runs a grocery shop with his father in the area, had threatened her that he will throw acid on her if she does not marry him, they said.
The accused and the victim are known to each other, police said.
A case was registered against the accused under sections 341 (wrongful restraint) and 506 (criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code, Deputy Commissioner of Police (East) Amrutha Guguloth said.
Subsequently, after the victim’s statement was recorded by the magistrate,
sections 354B (assault or use of criminal force to woman with intent to disrobe) and 354D (stalking) were added to the FIR, the DCP said. Efforts are on to nab Yadav, she said. In December last year, two motorcycle-borne masked men flung acid on a 17-year-old girl who was attacked minutes after she left her west Delhi home for school.
As outrage spread over the acid attack, women’s groups and others, including Lt Governor V K Saxena, raised questions on the availability of acid in markets despite a ban and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal asked how the accused could have gathered so much courage.
The attack took place at Mohan Garden near Uttam Nagar and the girl suffered eight per cent facial burns. Later, the same evening, three men including the victim’s neighbour were arrested in connection with the incident.

NEW DELHI, JAN 4 (PTI): Delhi’s minimum temperature on Wednesday morning plunged to 4.4 degrees Celsius -– the season’s lowest -- making the national capital colder than Dharamsala, Nainital and Dehradun.
A dense layer of fog lowered visibility to 200 metres, affecting the movement of road and rail traffic.
At least 19 trains to Delhi were delayed by one-and-a-half to four-anda-half hours due to the foggy weather, a Railways spokesperson said.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) shared satellite images that showed a thick layer of fog over the Indo-Gangetic plains and adjoining central and eastern parts of the country.
The Palam observatory at the Indira Gandhi International Airport logged a visibility level of 200 metres at 5.30 am.
According to the weather office, ‘very dense’ fog is when visibility is between 0 and 50 metres, 51 and 200 metres is ‘dense’, 201 and 500 metres ‘moderate’, and 501 and 1,000 metres ‘shallow’.
With frosty winds from the snow-clad Himalayas barrelling through the plains, the Safdarjung observatory, Delhi’s primary weather station, saw the minimum temperature plummet to 4.4 degrees Celsius from 8.5 degrees a day ago.
Delhi’s minimum temperature was lower than that of Dharamsala (5.2 degrees), Nainital (6 degrees) and Dehradun (4.5 degrees).
The Delhi Ridge weather station near Delhi University recorded a cold wave with a minimum temperature of 3.3 degrees Celsius, the lowest in the

Siddaramaiah calls K’taka CM Bommai ‘puppy before PM’
BALLARI (KTK), JAN 4 (PTI): Leader of Opposition in the Karnataka Assembly Siddaramaiah on Wednesday called Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai a puppy before Prime Minister Narendra Modi for alleged failure to bring Rs 5,495 crore into the State as was recommended by the 15th Finance Commission.
Hitting back, Chief Minister Bommai said Siddaramaiah’s statement mirrors his personality. Just like a faithful dog, he is loyal to the people of the State.
Bommai said Modi is like a ‘kamadhenu’ (wishfulfilling cow) who gave many projects to Karnataka, which never happened since
independence.
Addressing a public meeting today, Siddaramaiah challenged Bommai to show some courage.

The former Chief Minister pointed out that the 15th Finance Commission in its interim report recommended the Rs 5,495 crore as a special allowance for Karnataka.
“But our Union Finance Minister Nirmala

“Karnataka sent 25 BJP MPs to the Lok Sabha. You (Bommai) came to power through ‘Operation Lotus’ in Karnataka. If you have guts and courage, then get Rs 5,495 crore from the Centre,” the Congress said to the Chief Minister.
Reacting to that, Bommai said the people would give a befitting reply to the Leader of Opposition in the Assembly election
which is about four months away.
“The statement shows the personality of the Congress leader,” Bommai told reporters in Ballari .
He added that just like dog, which is a faithful animal, he would also remain faithful.
cold day conditions. Most places are likely to record maximum temperatures between 13 degrees and 15 degrees Celsius,” Senior IMD Scientist RK Jenamani said.
However, there has been an improvement in Delhi’s fog condition, he said.
“Cold wave and cold day conditions are predicted to continue for the next 24 to 48 hours though there will be some improvement under the influence of a fresh Western Disturbance, which is likely to affect northwest India starting January 7,” Jenamani said. The senior meteorologist said similar conditions persist across north India, including Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. Day temperatures in these states are likely to remain much below normal. Cold day and severe cold day conditions are predicted to wallop Uttar Pradesh. Maximum temperatures in the state will remain 10 to 12 degrees Celsius below normal, the IMD official said.

Resurgent variants
While China is currently facing a serious health crisis due to the spread of the new omicron variant called Omicron BF.7 the world is shaken by the fact that the new virus is highly infectious and which has raised questions about the efficacy of covid vaccines. It is a brand-new coronavirus mutant with a short incubation period and a quick rate of transmission to other people. With one of the highest transmissibilities among all Covid variants, the variant is an Omicron mutant. However, there are pros and cons regarding vaccines and their efficacy. The general belief among health officials is that unvaccinated individuals are more at danger. The chance of contracting this infection is also increased in those with weakened immune systems, including as children, the elderly, pregnant women, and persons with numerous comorbidities, such as uncontrolled diabetes, cancer, kidney, or heart disease. As a precautionary measure, people should adhere to Covid-appropriate behaviour and get vaccinated for Covid-19. It is pertinent to note that after the first and second covid pandemic wave during 2020 and 2021 the Delta variant had inflicted terrible tragedies across India. According to reports, BF.7 is causing the present COVID situation in China. It is anticipated that approximately 60% of China and 10% of the global population are expected to contract the disease in the ensuing three months, with millions of deaths. According to numerous assessments, the Chinese still have a low immunisation rate as compared to India and also make insufficient investments in emergency care. India witnessed the first wave in 2020 caused by SARS-Cov-2 virus followed by a more potent and deadlier Delta variant. The second and deadlier wave gradually ebbed by the end of 2021 and by 2022 number of infections drastically came down from lakhs to thousands and four digits. The Covid-19 trajectory in India experienced a sharp increase during March-May 2021, however, since May 2021, the trajectory has witnessed a considerable and sustained decline. As the year 2022 went by, it was also a reminder that India has not only the threat of Covid infection, but today, also of other viruses. As of January 4, 2023, official sources inform that India has the second-highest number of confirmed cases in the world (after the United States of America) with 44,680,355 reported cases of COVID-19 infection and the third-highest numbe r of COVID-19 deaths (after the United States and Brazil) at 530,707deaths. Covid-19 until the year 2022 comes in ten different variations, the most recent being BF.7. The danger of contracting this virus is higher in those who are unvaccinated or have weakened immune systems, such as the elderly and young children. The ability of the virus to evade neutralising antibodies produced by vaccinations or prior infections has been connected to this mutation. The subvariant does have a higher potential for re-infection or for infecting people who have already had a vaccination, according to experts. A recent study also revealed that BF.7 could evade protection even in the case of patients who had already received three vaccinations. Testing will remain as the only way to determine the spread of the virus and therefore, it means Covid Appropriate Behaviour is back.

Why Can I Not Follow You Now?
Peter said to Him, “Lord, why can I not follow You now?” —John 13:37
There are times when you can’t understand why you cannot do what you want to do. When God brings a time of waiting, and appears to be unresponsive, don’t fill it with busyness, just wait. The time of waiting may come to teach you the meaning of sanctification— to be set apart from sin and made holy— or it may come after the process of sanctification has begun to teach you what service means. Never run before God gives you His direction. If you have the slightest doubt, then He is not guiding. Whenever there is doubt— wait.
At first you may see clearly what God’s will is— the severance of a friendship, the breaking off of a business relationship, or something else you feel is distinctly God’s will for you to do. But never act on the impulse of that feeling. If you do, you will cause difficult situations to arise which will take years to untangle. Wait for God’s timing and He will do it without any heartache or disappointment. When it is a question of the providential will of God, wait for God to move.
Peter did not wait for God. He predicted in his own mind where the test would come, and it came where he did not expect it. “I will lay down my life for Your sake.” Peter’s statement was honest but ignorant. “Jesus answered him, ‘…the rooster shall not crow till you have denied Me three times’ ” (John 13:38). This was said with a deeper knowledge of Peter than Peter had of himself. He could not follow Jesus because he did not know himself or his own capabilities well enough. Natural devotion may be enough to attract us to Jesus, to make us feel His irresistible charm, but it will never make us disciples. Natural devotion will deny Jesus, always falling short of what it means to truly follow Him.
Year 2023: entwined in hope and enlivens with hope
Year 2022 is gone We have entered into 2023. Experiences that we underwent in 2022 were like roller coaster. For some, year 2022 was studded with all sorts of good tidings, for others not that good, but bad and worse. However, one common thread that weaves all of us is that we hope year 2023 will be a year of great prospects. If we scroll back to the past year some of the events that occurred would bring to our memory that how the majority of populace managed to cruise through the most difficult times. For instance, on the 24th of February, 2022, Russian invasion of Ukraine is posing serious global consequences. It is likely to spill over through 2023. As a result, Europe is facing gas shortage affecting the heating system forcing millions of people in dire straits. This war will have serious repercussion directly or indirectly on others.
Russian invasion of Ukraine has hugely affected the people of Ukraine as they will have to spend the cold winter in miserable ways. People are undergoing numerous problems as the Russian artillery and air forces targeting and destroying the essential facilities. Putin’s Russia wants
to decimate Ukraine. and so, shelling and pulverizing Ukraine on all sides continues. Ukrainians are experiencing artillery fires every day in which people gets killed. Russians strikes with barrage of missile attacks has dashed the hopes of Ukrainians living the next day. President Putin thought that Ukraine would fall within days, but to his surprise Ukrainians are resisting and defying the Russian attack. Our of desperation, Russia is destroying Ukraine’s important base facilities – education, health, residential areas and host of others.
Since their strategy has failed, Russian forces has resorted to killing, raping and destroying everything with the help of ground and aerial powers Hundreds and thousands of lives have been lost and many more in the coming year – are to be treated as crimes against humanity. In other parts of the world, oppression and exploitation, discrimination and alienation, hunger and poverty, killing and murders of varied sorts loom at large. Millions and billions of innocent lives are lost. Heinous crimes against humanity are being perpetuated and keep rising at alarming levels. If
The year 2022 ended with the world biding tearful adieu to three very inspiring personalities that are ever known to mankind of this generation:
Heeraben Modi, the adoring mother of Narendra Modi, prime minister of India and one of the most powerful leaders in the world today, Pele, a larger-than-life icon in the world of football and Pope Benedict XVI, a German Priest who had once enjoyed the support and loyalty of more than oneseventh of the world population and the first Pope of the Catholic Church to resign in more than 500 years.
The three, who all passed away on December 30-31, 2022, do not possess any legitimate or officially defined political power or authority during their lifetime. Yet their influence and the role they played had impacted lives all around the world, transcending human barriers. Humanity representing different nationalities, religions, languages, political ideologies and cultures rallied around the personalities of Heeraben Modi, Pele and Pope Benedict XVI to draw inspiration, hope and joy, and adored them. One way or the other, the inspiring life the three had lived had unified humanity, amidst conflicts and divisions that confront the world, and make the world still a liveable planet for mankind.
The moving scene of an emo-
we go deep into the crimes committed, they show the ferocity and criminality of human mind. Anguish and anxiety of refugees wandering from country to country searching for a place to live, but their dreams and hopes are increasingly gets shattered.
We are also at war with our mother nature. Dramatic change in weather conditions, manifesting in colossal destruction of many things. For instance, this Christmas (2022) has been on a low-key. Many had to stay in-doors especially those in North-America and Canada. It is freezing accompanied by heavy snow and winter storms. As a result, the climate has hit -45 degree Celsius. The ground is covered with six and half feet inches of snow paralyzing the movement of airplanes, vehicles, and people. It looks like one-time epic life-time experience. Dramatic changes in weather conditions that sweeps across – winter storms, snow avalanches and nature’s fury posit that Homo sapiens are responsible for the total reversal of the mother nature. In North America the freezing temperatures is likely to linger for long time.
Volatility of weather conditions has reached its
peak. People across the world keep experiencing – hotter and freezing temperatures. We have come to a point of no return that seasons can never be predicted. In addition to this, millions of people live in abject poverty, hunger, and in squalid conditions. Inequality continues to widen between the haves and havenots. Across the globe, we tend to see and experience the rise of neo-fascism, racism, casteism, misogynism, identity politics, Islamophobia, religious and ideological fundamentalism and Aryan supremacy. Vile hate speeches spewed against the minorities and vulnerable communities. Ideology of Majoritarianism is willfully employed to polarize and to create toxic atmosphere in the society. Criminals are thriving; throttling and heckling innocent people.
Problems keep mounting for majority of populace who are immersed in unsurmountable and innumerable problems. For them, what do year 2023 mean? Is it going to be yet another year that passed-by or going to be different? One of the most striking questions that reverberates is: What makes them to live, despite all sorts of sufferings? Knowing well that though there isn’t any
exit, and yet, for any survivor or those who are caught up in the web of problems, what makes them to live, for that a clear and categorical response is ‘HOPE’. This is what who live and lead their existence day-in and day-out say. Without hope it is hard to wake up next morning. Hope is the driving force for the entire humanity.
Hope is a powerful concept. It inspires us to do the impossible and helps us to carry on during difficult times. And hope can come in many different shapes and forms. Hope is not static, but dynamic. It keeps fluctuating. One day hope offers enlivening dosage and, on another day, puts us in devastating position.
Nonetheless, our soul lives in hope. During Covid we did witness the entire humanity helping one another that re-kindled hope. When we see the happenings around us the hope we have been envisioning vis-à-vis ‘common humanity’ and ‘common future’ is ebbing out. And yet, hope reverberate in the form of music, book or conversation or action or in many forms.
As Barrack Obama rightly echoed that, “Hope is that thing inside us that insists, despite all the evidence to the contrary, that
Leaving behind a lasting legacies
tional Narendra Modi leaving the national capital to his hometown to see for the last time the lifeless body of his mother and then carrying his mom’s dead body to the funeral pyre had touched the hearts of the world.
At that given moment when Life came calling, the meaning of being a very powerful man and the status of Narendra Modi as a prime minister ceased; instead, he became just a grieving son who was returning home to see his deceased mother.
Heeraben Modi represents the struggle of Indian women from the poorest section of society. The story of Heeraben Modi and many Indian women of her class is a story of a lifelong struggle, in the midst of poverty and hardship, to find ways and means to raise and support a family and provide basic and decent education to their children. From hardship to raising a son who went on to become the prime minister of the second-most populated country in the world, her life will inspire many women around the world who are facing similar problems and challenges like her, and would give them strength and courage to face those life’s challenges. Albeit her passing, the inspiring personality of Heeraben Modi will forever etch in the hearts and minds of humanity.
And if the story of Heeraben Modi is a story of inspiration, the
story of Pele is a story of bringing cheers and excitement to millions of football fans across the globe through the beautiful game that he had once played and fans around the world fondly remembered. More than four decades since he stopped playing football, until his demise, yet the meaning that he gave to the game continues to dominate the world football’s discourse.
Today, one cannot talk about football without talking about or remembering Pele. He was the one who had added a new dimension to the game of football – that a football is not just a game but a beautiful game: meaning football is not just about two different teams playing for a win, it’s more about bringing joy and cheers to mankind. Engaging with football means setting aside real life’s hardships and difficulties for time being, and taking a moment to see the brighter and lighter side of life!
Pele’s career in football came at the time when the world was at its peak of Cold War. Decades after the disastrous two world wars, the world was still a troubled place. Uncertainty and tension continued to plague humanity with the world dividing between the eastern communist bloc and the western democratic bloc. It was during this troubling time that the beautiful game of football, led by Pele and his generation of football’s heroes and legends,
provided the platform for people torn apart by different political ideologies to come together and celebrate humanity through the game of football. Football indeed had played its part well in giving a ray of hope for humanity at the time when the dark cloud of uncertainty covered the world during the era of the Cold War.
If Pele’s beautiful game gave hope to humanity at the height of the Cold War, it was the institution of the Pope that became one of the instrumental forces in bringing the end of the Cold War. Remember, the defeat of Communism and the fall of the iron curtain in Eastern Europe was a triumph of humanity. It was the solidarity movement that was launched in Poland in the 1980s and supported by Pope John Paul II, a Polish Pope and a predecessor of Pope Benedict XVI, which had liberated Eastern Europe from the clutch of communism.
The election of a Polish Pope in 1978 by the Church of Rome encouraged the Polish citizens to raise their voices against Communism in the country. Within years after the election, a revolution broke out in Poland which led to the overthrowing of the communist regime in the country and replaced by a pro-western democratic government. This ripple effect of the defeat of communism in Poland spread all over Eastern Europe in the subsequent
How mums’ should approach 2023?
2000 moms pan-India, of which 58 percent were younger than 30 years of age, with 79 percent with only 1 child were surveyed by Mylo, a one-stop shop for expectant and new mothers.
It released its findings from the poll which was aimed at comprehending a new moms’ expectations for the coming year, as well as their job aspirations, desire to strike a balance between their obligations to their families and their employment, and interpersonal relationships.
Mothers inclined to stay in the workforce but lack of WFH options a concern Despite the fact that full-time office employment is now a possibility for Indian businesses due to widespread vaccinations, it could no longer be possible to return to the working practises of the time before the pandemic. A majority of Indian moms (86 percent) said they would start or continue working in 2023, but nearly half (47 percent) said they would only do so if given flexible work hours
or a work-from-home option.
60 percent of the women who do not want to work in 2023 stated that they will do so because they want to spend more time with their children, while 20 percent claimed that they do not want to deal with the stress of juggling childcare, domestic duties, and work commitments at the same time.
Balancing a career with motherhood is leading to motherhood burnout
Despite an increase in women entering the job in India over the years, 32 percent of Indian mothers cited balancing parenthood and work obligations as the main cause of burnout.
Other challenges connected with becoming a mother were not getting enough sleep (19 percent) and not getting a break (12 percent).
Child care (42 percent) and one’s own physical health (40 percent) were identified as the top stressors for Indian moms, while worries about money management and handling dayto-day expenses were also a
problem for 25 percent of the women polled.
In 2023, new mothers expect to have more time for themselves
New mothers have a little bit more time for other activities when their children transition from the newborn to the toddler stage and gain in maturity. New Indian mothers anticipate having more time and energy in 2023, according to 71 percent of respondents, so they can take care of themselves. Nearly 20 percent of moms anticipate a promotion or increase that will improve their families’ financial status, which is another sign of confidence for the new year.
For mothers, destressing is more about staying in rather than going out
According to the Mylo study, 76 percent of respondents said they had not gone out with their friends at all in the previous month, indicating that many new mothers’ social connections centre primarily around their families. When asked what they do in their spare time, viewing
films on sites like YouTube or OTT emerged as the most popular activity (indicated by 51 percent of new mothers). Spending time outdoors with family was the second most preferred leisure activity (37 percent) while only about 15 percent of new mothers report talking to their friends.
Shaveta Gupta, Head of Content & Community, Mylo, said, “Women have been juggling multiple tasks, such as managing the home, raising children, and working, with little further help from the community and their employers. The new mothers of India have emerged as much as, if not more educated and involved in the workforce as compared to men. Therefore our businesses must devise ways to retain and seamlessly reintegrate new mothers when returning to the workplace. Similarly, we must emphasise to families and society as a whole the need to recognise and valorise the work that goes into motherhood.” IANS life
something better awaits us if we have the courage to reach for it and to work for it and to fight for it.” In hope and with hope humanity navigates the most difficult times. We go to bed with a hope of waking up the next day and with that hope we close our eyes. As Aristotle aptly puts “Hope is a walking dream.”
I have hope and also see hope-filled world and humanity in the eyes and faces of children. Life is not worth living without hope. I do believe that in hope and with hope we journey together in a near future realizing and establishing the humanity.
An Italian proverb beautifully describes “Hope is the thing ever lost.” To conclude, as we enter into 2023, the following two verses will certainly add confidence and rigor: A verse in the book of Job exhorts us that “And you will have confidence, because there is hope … “(Job 11: 18a). Similarly, Prophet Jerimiah conveys a message from Yahweh to the exiles in Babylon: “For surely I know the plans I have for you, says the Lord, plans for your welfare and not for harm, to give you a future with hope” (Jer: 28:11).

years and eventually led to the disintegration of the mighty USSR in 1991 into 15 independent states. Pope Benedict XVI, who succeeded Pope John Paul II, had led the Catholic faithfuls comprising of more than one billion and represented the Christian community at large in preserving and defending the conservative values of the Christian faith and traditions until his unexpected resignation in February 2013. Pope Benedict will be best remembered for his unapologetic defence of the Biblical position of marriage as a union between one man and one woman, Complementarianism as the sole criterion for Church ministry and religious freedom. Pope Benedict’s unapologetic defence of those Conservative Christian values, for which the Christian community should be forever grateful, came amidst the onslaught from the liberal forces against those values which not only affects Christianity but threatens to devalue humanity. The common thread that brought Heeraben Modi, Pele and Pope Benedict XVI together was that the life they lived represented the best of humanity. And taking inspiration from them, drawing the best out of their life and living in accord with it will help humanity towards creating a better world.

Wild parties on Christmas eve sacrilegious
Sir, December 25 is the holiest day for Christians. It is this day on which Lord Jesus had taken birth. I feel not only Christians but even people from other faiths should also consider this an auspicious day. All should observe this day with a complete purity of heart and mind. It is indeed a good idea to do some charity and help the needy and poor on this day. But, the sad part is that the contrary is being noticed on Christmas eve these days! Certain people throw special parties with booze. They want to jazz up this occasion with all vulgar dance, wild revelry and much more. The videos of wild parties and immoral indulgences that go around on social media are totally unacceptable. This must be stopped. This I am speaking very objectively. Please check out, many have started considering that Christmas (including Durga Puja…) is a big day to celebrate with drink and dance until you fall. Why are the HOLY days earmarked for all acts of debauchery? Why are such outrageous things catching on among the new generation? Has Christmas become synonymous with depravity? This calls all spiritual leaders, social activists, and the government, which is quite non-committal, into question. One feels our priests and bishops should not remain silent. They should speak out and dictate the terms with utmost urgency. Their silence might be taken as approval. Frenzied parties and prayers cannot go together. Heaven should send down blessings, not curse. Amen!

Air India incident: DGCA seeks report
A DRUNK MAN URINATED ON A WOMAN ONBOARD NEW YORK TO DELHI FLIGHT
NEW DELHI, JAN 4 (PTI): Air India on Wednesday said it has imposed a 30-day flying ban on a passenger who had urinated on a female copassenger onboard a flight from New York to Delhi in November last year and set up an internal panel to probe whether there were lapses on the part of their crew in addressing the situation.
Aviation regulator DGCA said it has sought a report from the airline on the incident, which happened on November 26 and will “take action against those found negligent”.
Air India said it has filed a police complaint about the incident but did not specify when the 30-day flying ban on the passenger came into effect.
Delhi Police on Wednesday said several teams have been formed to catch the passenger and registered a case against the accused.
Based on the complaint given by the victim, Delhi Police has registered a case under sections 294 (does any obscene act in any public place), 354 (Assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty), 509 (word, gesture
or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman) and 510 (Misconduct in public by a drunken person) of the Indian Penal Code and other relevant section of Aircraft rule.
Meanwhile, the National Commission for Women has written to the Air India Limited chairman to intervene in the matter. It said the action violated the woman’s right to live a life of dignity and safety.
Airlines have the power to impose a flying ban on an individual for unruly behaviour for up to a lifetime. While Air India has banned the passenger from taking its flights, other carriers can decide whether a flying ban should be imposed on the individual concerned.
On November 26, an inebriated male passenger urinated on a female copassenger during a flight from New York to Delhi, according to reports.
Without mentioning
the details about the incident, an Air India spokesperson on Wednesday said the airline has taken a very serious view of the incident, where a passenger behaved in an unacceptable and undignified manner on the New York-Delhi flight that caused extreme distress to a fellow passenger.
Air India has “banned the passenger for 30 days, the maximum it is permitted to unilaterally do so, and reported the matter to the DGCA for further action,” the spokesperson said in a statement.
However, Air India declined to provide details about when the flying ban was imposed.
“We have also constituted an internal committee to probe lapses on part of Air India’s crew and address the deficiencies that delayed quick redressal of the situation,” the statement said.
Further, the airline said it is also in regular contact
Party workers from Amethi in white tees march alongside Rahul in Yatra
BAGHPAT (UP), JAN 4 (PTI): Congress leader Rahul Gandhi in a white t-shirt in the biting cold has been a hot topic of discussion -- and not just in top political circles. As the yatra resumed after the new year break, hundreds of Congress workers from Amethi walked in the Uttar Pradesh leg of the march donning white tees.
After a night stay in Mavikalan village in Baghpat, the march led by Gandhi started its onward journey Wednesday morning. He was again seen wearing the white t-shirt that he has sported for much of the journey.
The Kanyakumarito-Kashmir yatra will travel through Uttar Pradesh for two days and enter Haryana’s Panipat by Thursday evening via Baghpat and Shamli.
Over 1,200 party workers from Amethi, the erstwhile Congress bastion
in 2019, joined the
Tuesday.
According to Amethi district Congress chief Pradeep Singhal, the party workers are likely to interact with Gandhi and urge him to contest the 2024 Lok Sabha elections from Amethi.
“Rahul Gandhi Ji has been our Lok Sabha MP and the people of Amethi share
a special bond with him,” Amethi district Congress general secretary Anil Singh told PTI.
Earlier, state Congress leader Ajay Rai had claimed that Gandhi would contest next year’s general elections from Amethi. However, there has been no word from the party so far on the former Congress president fighting the next parliamentary elections again from the seat which he lost to the BJP’s Smriti Irani.
with the aggrieved passenger and her family during the investigation and reporting process.
A senior official at the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) in the morning said the regulator is “seeking a report from the airline and shall take action against those found negligent”. The airline had not reported the incident to the regulator earlier.
Under the Civil Aviation Requirements (CAR) issued by DGCA in 2017, regarding the handling of unruly passengers, an airline has the power to ban an individual from flying for a lifetime.
If one airline places a person on the no-fly list, then other airlines have the option of whether to impose a similar ban on the individual concerned.
The ban period varies depending on the violations being classified as Level 1, 2 or 3.
For Level 1, which pertains to unruly behaviour such as “physical gestures, verbal harassment, unruly inebriation”, the ban can be for up to three months.
The debarment will be up to six months for Level 2, which pertains
to physically abusive behaviour like “pushing, kicking, hitting, grabbing or inappropriate touching or sexual harassment”.
For Level 3 when there is a life-threatening behaviour like damage to aircraft operating systems, “physical violence such as choking, eye gouging, murderous assault, attempted or actual breach of the flight crew compartment etc”, the ban can be from a minimum of two years or more without a limit, as per the norms.
The home ministry can also provide DGCA and airlines, with a list of individuals identified as national security threats for inclusion in the no-fly list under the CAR.
Against the backdrop of the Air India incident, stand-up comedian Kunal Kamra on Wednesday tweeted ‘2 Air India’s” and shared a screenshot of Air India banning him sometime back following alleged unruly behaviour onboard an IndiGo flight.
Kamra also shared a screenshot of a media report saying that Air India has banned the passenger who urinated on a female copassenger for 30 days.
Prez assents Guj bill empowering police against protestors
NEW DELHI, JAN 4 (PTI): A Gujarat bill facilitating registration of criminal cases against persons who stage protests in violation of Section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC) has received Presidential assent, officials said Wednesday.
The Code of Criminal Procedure (Gujarat Amendment) Bill, 2021, was passed by the State Assembly in March last year.
The bill seeks to make any violation of prohibitory orders issued under Section 144 CrPC a cognisable offence under Indian Penal Code Section 188 (disobedience to an order duly promulgated by a public servant).
It amends Section 195 of the CrPC which states that no court shall take cognisance of any criminal conspiracy for contempt of the lawful authority of public servants, except on the complaint in writing of the public servant concerned.
The Code of Criminal Procedure (Gujarat Amendment) Bill, 2021, has been assented to by the President, a home ministry official said.
According to the statement and objects
of the bill, the Gujarat government, police commissioners and district magistrates are empowered to issue prohibitory orders under CrPC Section 144, directing any person to abstain from a certain act or to take certain order to prevent disturbance of public tranquillity or a riot or an affray to maintain public order on various occasions.
It said the police officers while deployed on such duties come across incidents of violation and need to take appropriate legal action against the violators under Section 188 of IPC.
However, Section 195 of the CrPC, 1973, makes it mandatory for the public servant issuing such orders to be the complainant against the violators thereby creating an impediment to taking cognizance of violations... Section 195 (1) (a) (ii) CrPC prohibits the jurisdictional courts from taking cognisance of the offences except on the complaint in writing of the public servant concerned, the statement and objects said.
The maximum punishment under the Section 188 of the IPC is six-month imprisonment.
Incursions along Indo-Tibet border are by China: Sikyong
Border disputes with India came to the fore after the Lama’s escape with his followers when the Chinese contested the McMohan line through statements.
In an interview to PTI,
of India.
“We know all incursions are happening from the Chinese side,” Tsering said here.
He was speaking in the context of recent clashes at Tawang and at Ladakh between the Indian Army and China’s PLA.
“Till 1959, there was no border between India and China; it was with Tibet … We are signatories to the 1914 Simla agreement between British India and Tibet and we stand very firm on the McMohan line as the legitimate border,”
SC to hear on Thursday plea against eviction of people from Railways land in Haldwani
NEW DELHI, JAN
4 (IANS): The Supreme Court on Wednesday agreed to examine on January 5 a plea connected with proposed eviction of more than 4,000 families from railways land at Haldwani.
Advocate Prashant Bhushan mentioned the matter for urgent hearing before a bench headed by Chief Justice D.Y. Chandrachud and comprising Justices S.Abdul Nazeer and P.S. Narasimha. The bench agreed to hear the matter on Thursday.
Bhushan said a connected matter is scheduled for hearing Thursday and asked the court to tag his plea along with it.
Bhushan’s plea said: “The petitioners are poor people who have been lawful residents of Mohalla Nai Basti and Line N 17 & 18, Banbhulpura (Azad Nagar), Haldwani District Nainital, Uttarakhand for more than 70 years. As a result of a series of injustices that have resulted in an order for demolition of their houses vide the impugned order, the petitioners are left with no remedy other than the present SLP.”
According to reports,
more than 4,000 families face eviction from railways land in Banbhulpura area in Uttarkahand’s Haldwani district, after the high court ordered demolition of constructions on the railway land.
The plea contended that the Uttarakhand High Court ordered the summary eviction of more than 20,000 people residing in more than 4,000 houses even though proceedings regarding the title of the residents were pending before the district magistrate.
The plea has been filed by Bhupendra Arya and others, challenging Uttarakhand High Court
order on December 20, 2022, which directed petitioners be evicted within a week and their houses be demolished.
According to reports, encroachments around Haldwani Railway Station included around 20 mosques and nine temples and schools.
“It is submitted that the high court, in complete disregard of settled principles of title and occupation, collectively rejected all documents placed by the petitions that clearly established their title,” said the plea.
The petitioners contended that the names of
the local residents have been recorded in the municipal records in the house tax register and they are paying the house tax regularly.
“Further there are five government schools, one hospital, and two overhead water tanks in the area. Thus, the long physical existence of the petitioners, some even prior to Independence, has been recognized by the state government and its agencies by providing the petitioners with electricity and gas connections, enrolling the petitioners on voters list and providing them with Aadhaar cards,” said the plea.
he said.
“We fully recognise Tawang to be an integral part of India,” Tsering said.
In 1959, the Dalai Lama, the then head of the Tibetan government had fled Lhasa for India after an uprising by Tibetans which was brutally crushed by China’s People’s Liberation Army.
Though Communist China invaded Tibet in 1950, the Dalai Lama’s government continued to function with an army of its own in an arrangement with the Beijing which designated Tibet as an autonomous region.
“China’s belligerence is without any provocation from the Indian side,” the President said, adding that “India standing up to its position sends a very strong message to China.”
Indian and Chinese troops clashed at Yangtse, north east of Tawang, in a hand to hand combat which left several soldiers injured on both sides.
“China respects only power,” Sikyong Tsering said. The Sikyong or President is directly elected by the Tibetan diaspora living in various parts of the world ever since Tibetan refugees fled the “roof of the world” in the wake of the Dalai Lama’s escape from Lhasa to India.
The Dalai Lama remains the spiritual head of all Tibetan Budhists and many others who have become his follower,
but the administration of Tibetan organisations and its relationship with the outside world is headed by the Sikyong.
Tsering pointed out that China has disputes with many Asian countries and has been unwilling to settle them.
“When it comes to US-China relations, they (the Chinese) complain they are not treated as equals but when it comes to other countries in Asia, they never treat them equally,” Tsering asserted.
He claimed China has a policy of keeping “hot spots like Taiwan, South China Sea and Tawang burning” in order to divert attention to its own failings. He said that China had not been successful in keeping its economic momentum up and had not been able to control the Covid situation at home.
“Now that the whole world has recovered, they want to export Covid again … that is what is very, very irresponsible, ” Tsering said

Major setback for Google
NEW DELHI, JAN 4 (PTI): In a setback for Google, an appellate tribunal on Wednesday refused an interim stay on the competition regulator imposing a Rs 1,337-crore penalty on the US tech giant and asked it to deposit 10 per cent of the amount.
The National Company Law Appellate Tribunal (NCLAT) admitted the search giant’s challenge to the Competition Commission of India (CCI) slapping a Rs 1,337.76-crore fine for abusing the dominant position of its Android smartphone operating system in the country.
CCI in October last year had asked Google to allow smartphone users on the Android platform to uninstall apps and let them select a search engine of their choice.
That order was to become effective from January 19.
NCLAT issued notices to CCI and directed to list the matter on February 13, for hearing over the interim stay on the regulator’s order during the pendency of the matter before it.
Google challenged the
CCI order on grounds that it affects consumer safety and experience on Android and could raise smartphone prices.
During the proceedings, senior advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi, representing Google, sought an immediate stay on the order passed by the CCI on October 20.
Singhvi termed the CCI order as “patently erroneous” and “fraught with errors”. He submitted that there was no finding of any abuse of dominance against Google by CCI in its order.
He also alleged that CCI in its order has copypasted certain parts of a ruling passed by the European
Union Commission against Google earlier in 2018.
Singhvi pressed for an immediate stay of the CCI order, however, an NCLAT bench comprising Justice Rakesh Kumar and Alok Srivastava questioned the urgency shown by Google.
“Without a proper hearing, no order could be passed,” said NCLAT.
It also observed that the order was passed by CCI on October 20 and Google approached NCLAT almost two months after that.
“You took two months to file and expect us to pass an order in two minutes,” the bench said adding “we would have appreciated it if you had filed within a week
US regulators issue warning on crypto
WASHINGTON, JAN 4
(IANS): US regulators have issued their first-ever joint warning to banks over the risks associated with the cryptocurrency market, local media reported.
The watchdogs told financial institutions to be wary of potential fraud, legal uncertainty and misleading disclosures by digital asset firms, The BBC reported.
Banks were also cautioned over the “contagion risk” from the sector, The BBC reported. It comes just two months after the collapse of trading platform FTX sent shockwaves through the crypto industry.
The US Federal Reserve, Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation and the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency said they were closely monitoring the crypto activities of banking organisations.
“The events of the past year have been marked by significant volatility and the exposure of vulnerabilities in the crypto-asset sector,” the statement said.
The regulators also said that issuing or holding crypto tokens, which are stored on public, decentralised networks was “highly likely to be inconsistent with safe and sound bank-
ing practices”, The BBC reported. Banks were also encouraged to take steps to avoid problems in the digital asset market spreading to the wider financial system.
“It is important that risks related to the cryptoasset sector that cannot be mitigated or controlled do not migrate to the banking system,” it added.
Tuesday’s statement comes after months of hesitancy by US financial industry watchdogs to issue uniform guidelines on cryptocurrencies, despite banks inviting clearer advice from regulators, The BBC reported.
or two weeks.”
This was also opposed by the counsel appearing for CCI.
Meanwhile, senior advocate Mukul Rohatgi filed an impleadment plea on behalf of Mapmyindia.
The appellate tribunal allowed them to file their plea with the registry but said it would hear them at a later date.
On October 20 last year, CCI slapped a penalty of Rs 1,337.76 crore on Google for anti-competitive practices in relation to Android mobile devices. In the October ruling, CCI had also ordered the internet major to cease and desist from various unfair business practices.
This was challenged by Google before NCLAT, which is an appellate authority over the CCI against any direction issued or decision made or order passed by the regulator. In its petition, Google had sought an interim stay over the penalty.
Android has greatly benefitted Indian users, developers, and Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) and powered India’s digital transformation, Google had said.
NEW DELHI, JAN 4 (REUTERS): Citigroup lowered its projection for India’s current account deficit (CAD) to 2.9% of gross domestic product (GDP) for the current fiscal year, citing the growth in the country’s service exports and a lower oil price forecast.
The brokerage had, in August last year, said it expected India’s CAD to be as high as 3.9% of GDP for the fiscal year ending March 2023. “The key surprise came from the phenomenal growth in services exports in the first half of the current fiscal year, which goes beyond just software services,” Samiran Chakraborty, chief economist for India at Citi, said in a note.
Net exports of services rose 35% to $34.5 billion in the second quarter of the current fiscal. Citi also revised its CAD forecast for fiscal 2023-24 to 2.2% of GDP, from 2.4% earlier.
“The current downward revision in our CAD forecast is led by Citi’s lower oil price view,” Chakraborty said. “Oil prices have fallen sharply over the last two months towards the mid$80/barrel level and are likely to remain subdued over the next year”

European nations report record high temperatures in Jan
LONDON, JAN 4 (IANS): European nations have reported record high temperatures for the month of January leading to balmy weather in many places at the start of this year. Temperatures in the Netherlands, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Latvia, Czech Republic, Poland, Denmark and Belarus broke national records, the BBC reported. Meanwhile, station records were broken in Germany, France and Ukraine. The temperature recorded in Poland’s capital Warsaw on January 1 was 18.9 degrees Celsius, 4 degrees higher than the previous record for the month, and Belarus’ record high was 16.4 degrees, some 4.5 degrees above the previous record.
On the same day, Spain’s Bilbao city recorded 25.1 degrees Celsius, more than 10 degrees above average and equivalent to the temperature in July.
Libyan PM vows to preserve unity
TRIPOLI, JAN 4 (IANS)
Libyan Prime Minister Abdul-Hamed Dbeibah has vowed that his government will strive to preserve the country’s unity and avoid war or armed conflict. Dbeibah made his remarks during a graduation ceremony for 306 police officers from the police academy in the western town of Aziziya, which is located some 46 km south of the capital Tripoli, reports Xinhua news agency.
“We work together to protect Libya, its unity and we reject any return to war,” Dbeibah said in a speech during the celebration.
Acting Interior Minister Emad al-Tarabelsi vowed to make more efforts to develop the interior ministry and impose security in all of Libya.
Pakistani Taliban threatens to target top leaders of PML-N and PPP
ISLAMABAD, JAN 4 (PTI): The banned Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) on Wednesday threatened to target the top leaders of the two major political parties in the ruling coalition if they continued to support tough measures against the militants.
The TTP, which is believed to be close to al-Qaeda, has explicitly warned Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari led Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) - the two major parties of the ruling coalition.
“If these two parties remain firm on their position and continue to be slaves of the army, then action will be taken against their leading people,” a statement issued by the militant group said.
The group warned that “people should avoid getting close to such leading people.” It claimed that the TTP was only waging what it called “jihad” in Pakistan and “our target is the security agencies occupying the country”.
It explicitly warned Foreign Minister Bilawal, whose mother former prime minister Benazir Bhutto was killed allegedly by TTP militants in a terrorist attack in 2007. “Al-
though Bilawal is still young, this poor man has not yet witnessed the state of war,” the statement said, adding that the PPP leader had declared an open war on TTP.
The group also said that it had not taken action against any political party for a long time but “unfortunately…Bilawal Bhutto Zardari gave the US the status of mother to quench the thirst of his mother’s love”. The terrorist outfit
also said that Prime Minister Sharif had committed the support of his entire party in the war against TTP to please the US.
The TTP spared the religious political parties, saying there is no scope for action against them in TTP’s policy. However, it said that “we also request you (religious parties) to refrain from activities against us.”
The warning comes just days after the civilmilitary leadership of the country met under the banner of the National Security Committee and vowed to show “zero tolerance” for terrorism in the country.
“NSC reiterated its resolve to have zero tolerance for terrorism in Pakistan and reaffirmed its determination to take on any and all entities that resort to violence”.
Sri Lanka election commission to accept nominations for local polls from Jan
COLOMBO, JAN 4 (PTI): Sri Lanka’s top election body announced on Wednesday that it will accept nominations from January 18 to 21 for the local council polls, which have been postponed since March amidst the prevailing economic crisis.
Notices calling for nominations for 340 local government bodies were also released by district secretaries on Wednesday.
The nominations would be accepted between January 18 and 21, the National Election Commission said. A date for the polls would be announced a week thereafter.
The elections for local councils in the country have been postponed since March last year as the government grappled with the economic crisis and the political upheaval which led to street protests.
Sri Lanka’s local government elections have been
mired in controversy with Opposition parties accusing the government of delaying the polls because the ruling Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) fears an embarrassing defeat.
The announcement of nomination dates came as Opposition parties expressed doubts over the government’s intention to hold the election.
“The government is trying their best not to hold it. But a postponement can only be done through a referendum,” GL Peiris, an opposition parliamentarian, told reporters.
The ruling SLPP controls the majority of local councils after they won the 2018 local election.
The Opposition thinks that the SLPP’s chances to win the next election are slim given the ongoing economic crisis.
Sri Lanka, a country of 22 million people, plunged into financial and political turmoil earlier this year as it faced a shortage of foreign currencies.
The worst economic crisis since its independence in 1948 was triggered by a severe paucity of foreign exchange reserves.
Leaders from Nepal’s ruling alliance meet to discuss common minimum programme Russia says phone use allowed Ukraine to target its troops
KATHMANDU, JAN 4
(PTI): The top leaders from Nepal’s ruling sevenparty alliance met here on Wednesday and discussed the minimum common programme of the new government and the cabinet expansion.
The meeting held at the Prime Minister’s official residence at Baluwatar comes ahead of a confidence vote on Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’-led government next week.
The meeting was attended by Prime Minister and chairperson of CPN (Maoist Centre) Prachanda, CPN (UML) chair K P Sharma Oli, Deputy Prime Minister and President of Rastriya Swatantra Party
Rabi Lamichhane, President of Janata Samajwadi Party Upendra Yadav and President of Rashtriya Prajatantra Party Rajendra Lingden, according to sources close to the Prime Minister’s Office.
The latest political development, the minimum common programme of the government and expansion of the council of ministers among others featured during the discussion, according to the sources. The top leaders of the ruling alliance also discussed the issues relating to seeking a vote of confidence for the Prachandaled government.
The Prachanda-led coalition government requires at least 138 votes in
the 275-member House of Representatives to survive the Vote of Confidence.
Prachanda, who claims the support of 169 lawmakers, is currently busy in preparation for seeking a vote of confidence at the federal Parliament on January 10. Meanwhile, Nepali Congress spokesperson Prakash Sharan Mahat said that the days of the Prachanda-led coalition government are numbered.
He said that as the government has been formed with a mixture of diverse ideologies from pro-monarchists to antimonarchists, with different objectives and diverse nature, it is bound to be shortlived.
KYIV, JAN 4 (AP): Unauthorised use of cell phones by Russian soldiers led to a deadly Ukrainian rocket attack on the facility where they were stationed, the Russian military said late Tuesday, raising the death toll from the weekend attack to 89.
Gen. Lt. Sergei Sevryukov said in a statement that phone signals allowed Kyiv’s forces to “determine the coordinates of the location of military personnel” and launch a strike. Sevryukov said unspecified measures were being taken to “prevent similar tragic incidents in the future” and promised to punish officials responsible for the infraction.

NIHOKHU VILLAGE RESOLUTION
WASHINGTON, JAN 4
(PTI): US President Joe Biden has renominated Eric Garcetti as his envoy to India, with the White House exuding confidence that the former Mayor of Los Angeles would be confirmed by the Senate this time.
Garcetti, 51, is a close aide of President Biden. He has been Mayor of Los Angeles since 2013.
“Eric M Garcetti, of California, to be Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenip otentiary of the United States of America to the Republic of India,” the White House said after sending the nomination to the Senate.
The move came as the White House began renominating candidates who were not confirmed in the last Congress.
“As Secretary (of State, Antony) Blinken said very recently, our relation-
ship with India is crucial and it’s consequential, so we see this as a very important nomination,” White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre told reporters on Tuesday at her daily news conference.
In July 2021, President Biden nominated Garcetti as his Ambassador to India. His nomination was initially blocked by Republican Senator Chuck Grassley because of allegations of inappropriate behaviour by one of his senior staffers.
Twitter says it will relax ban on political advertising
SAN FRANCISCO, JAN 4 (AP): Twitter says it will ease up on its 3-year-old ban on political advertising, the latest change by Elon Musk as he tries to pump up revenue after purchasing the social media platform last year.
The company tweeted late Tuesday that “we’re relaxing our ads policy for cause-based ads in the US.” “We also plan to expand the political advertising we permit in the coming weeks,” the company said from its Twitter Safety account.
Twitter banned all political advertising in 2019, reacting to growing concern about misinformation spreading on social
media. At the time, thenCEO Jack Dorsey said that while internet ads are powerful and effective for commercial advertisers, “that power brings significant risks to politics, where it can be used to influence votes to affect the lives of millions.”
The latest move appears to represent a break from that policy, which had banned ads by candidates, political parties, or elected or appointed government officials.
Political advertising made up a sliver of Twitter’s overall revenue, accounting for less than $3 million of total spending for the 2018 U.S. midterm election.
Nihokhu General Public meeting was held on 03/01/2023 at Nihokhu Village Council Hall. The General Public pledged not to indulge in bribery in exchange for their votes in the coming State Assembly elections and resolved to maintain clean election in the Village.
It has been notified that no candidate will be allowed to use money or other means to vie for votes in the village.
RESIGNATION
That we have not been coerced or bought to shift our allegiance, but has always remained steadfast in our support for UDA consensus candidate Shri. K.T. Sukhalu, who in his term has brought about considerable development and progress in our constituency on a scale not seen since the past 25 years.
That this resignation is a result of our lack of faith in BJP 35 AC Zunheboto, which has brazenly acted against the NDPP-BJP alliance by consorting with another intending candidate. We urge the remaining executive to follow our path and desist from anti-alliance activities and remain firm in support of the incumbent MLA who is a true representative of our constituency.

Harry Styles beats Ed Sheeran on UK’s Top Hits Of 2022 chart
One Direction singer Harry Styles successfully beat Ed Sheeran on The UK’s Top Hits of 2022 chart with his best-selling track ‘As It Was’.
‘As It Was’ became the most listened-to single of the year in the UK, according to the British Phonographic Industry (BPI), based on its analysis of Official Charts Company data. It was streamed 180.9 million times and spent ten consecutive weeks at No.1 in the U.K. and 15 weeks at the top spot on the Billboard Hot 100, a new record for a British artist, reports aceshowbiz.com.
Official Charts’ website also stated that Styles “leads an all-British takeover of the Top 10 biggest tracks of the year in the U.K., marking the first time in 50 years that all ten of the year’s most

successful singles were released by British artists.”
In the meantime, Ed bagged the second and third spots on the list with his singles ‘Bad Habits’ and ‘Peru’, a collaboration with Nigerian artist Fireboy DML. He also secured the fifth spot with his song ‘Shivers’.
London-born singer ‘Cat Burns’ single ‘Go’ is in fourth place after it went viral on TikTok, while Kate Bush’s 1985 classic ‘Running Up That Hill’ is in sixth place after it made
a surprising chart return when it featured in Netflix show ‘Stranger Things’.
Oxford-based Glass Animals sleeper hit ‘Heat Waves’ took No. 7 and former ‘Britain’s Got Talent’ contestant Calum Scott’s collaboration with Belgian artist Lost Frequencies on ‘Where Are You Now’ finished eighth.
The Top 10 is rounded off by Scottish duo LF System’s ‘Afraid To Feel’ and singer Sam Fender’s Ivor Novello-winning song ‘Seventeen Going Under’.
This success by British artists comes as the UK recorded music consumption increased for the eighth consecutive year in 2022, with annual audio streaming figures breaking through the 150 billion mark for the first time in the UK.
“At a time when streaming has created unprecedented competition coming from every corner of the globe, it is astonishing that in 2022 British artists were involved in all of the Top 10 calendar year’s biggest hits in the U.K.,” said BPI’s Leon Neville.
“This outstanding achievement is a testament to the rich music talent that continues to emerge from across the U.K.’s nations and regions, fuelled by the passion, investment and skills of U.K. record labels.”

French consumer electronics company
Invoxia has unveiled a smart dog collar at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2023, which can track the heart activity of aAdog.
The collar comes with an “advanced heart tracking technology on par with human electrocardiograms”, reports AppleInsider.
It can detect and monitor a dog’s breathing and heartbeat using sensors and artificial intelligence (AI) to give a 360-degree picture of the dog’s health and well-being.
The collar was developed with the assistance of Veterinary specialists.
It measures movement, respiration and heart rates using miniature radar sensors, accelerometers and edge AI within the collar, which would be impossible to record without uncomfortable electrodes.
Moreover, it gives a 2D visual representation of a dog’s cardio-pulmonary system through continuous measurements, by using a proprietary technology called Heartprint.
“The Smart Dog Collar will be available in quarter three of 2023 for $149, with data subscriptions starting from $8.25 per month,” the report said. (IANS)
When the curtain drops on the concert in Nairobi, Alusa keeps making connections and profit through a digital streaming and payment platform, HustleSasa, which he co-founded to help artists recover from revenues lost to the coronavirus lockdown.
HustleSasa, which officially launched in November 2021, allows the singer-songwriter and fellow creatives to stream music or sell branded merchandise, concert tickets, food, fashion and other services in one mobile phone application.
Artists or vendors sell their products directly to the market, with no set-up costs or monthly fees, and receive payment instantly via bank card or mobile money, avoiding expensive commissions charged by some apps.
“Our region has one of the lowest payout rates in the world from other streaming platforms, but on HustleSasa you are getting value for money in real time,” Alusa said.

BLACKPINK become first K-pop group to hit 2bn YouTube views on MV with ‘DDU-DU DDU-DU’
BLACKPINK have become the first K-pop group to amass 2billion views on YouTube on a music video (MV) with 2018 single ‘DDU-DU DDU-DU’.
The quartet’s label, YG Entertainment, took to Twitter earlier today (January 4) to officially announce that the ‘DDUDU DDU-DU’ music video had hit the 2billion mark on YouTube, making BLACKPINK the first K-pop group in history to achieve this feat on a single music video.
BLACKPINK now rank just behind soloist Psy’s viral 2012 hit ‘Gangnam Style’, the music video for which now has 4.6 billion views at the time of publication. Second to the ‘DDU-DU DDU-DU’ music video is another BLACKPINK video – the official ‘Kill This Love’ music video sits at second place with 1.7billion views and counting.
The video treatment for Psy’s ‘Gangnam Style’ became the first on YouTube to ever hit a billion views in the platform’s history, marking the establishment of YouTube’s Billion Views Club. Aside from ‘Kill This Love’ and ‘DDUDU-DDU-DU’, the music video for ‘How You Like That’ is also part of the BVC, currently sitting at 1.1billion views. Fellow K-pop act BTS are also part of the club with several videos, including the music videos for ‘DNA’, ‘Boy With Luv’, ‘Dynamite’ and more.
‘DDU-DU DDU-DU’ was released in June 2018 as the lead single of the
four-piece’s debut minialbum ‘Square Up’. The song was accompanied by three other B-sides –‘Forever Young’, ‘Really’ and ‘See U Later’ – and all four tracks were co-written and -produced by inhouse YG Entertainment producer Teddy.
In September 2022, BLACKPINK dropped their sophomore studio album ‘Born Pink’, marking their first music as a unit in two years, featuring title track ‘Shut Down’. The record was preceded by its pre-release single ‘Pink Venom’ in August, and also includes ‘Ready For Love’, which premiered at
a virtual concert staged in collaboration with PUBG Mobile.
In NME’s three-star review of ‘Born Pink’, Tanu I. Raj wrote: “Now that BLACKPINK seem to have whetted their appetite for experimentation, let’s hope they go all the way on the next record – flip the script completely, propelled by the confidence that no matter what they do, they’ll come out on top.”
Days ago, YG Entertainment confirmed a 2023 release for member Jisoo’s solo debut.
“BLACKPINK’s Jisoo is currently working hard on recording her solo album.
While carrying out a busy world tour schedule since last year, she finished the album jacket photo shoot and worked on music production whenever she got the time in order to keep the promise with fans,” the company’s statement read. “She will greet [fans] soon with good news.”
This will make Jisoo the fourth and final member of the group to go solo. Jennie was the first BLACKPINK member to do so, with the single ‘Solo’ in 2018. This was followed by members Rosé and Lisa in 2021, with the releases ‘Lalisa’ and ‘R’, respectively. (NME)

Copa del Rey: Real Madrid made to struggle by Cacereno on night of upsets
MADRID, JAN 4 (IANS): Fourth- tier Cacereno pushed Real Madrid all the way in their third-round Copa del Rey tie.
It needed a moment of magic from Madrid’s Brazilian forward Rodrygo to give Real Madrid a 1-0 win on Tuesday night in a match that was much more complicated than most would have expected. The first half was an even affair with Cacereno by no means inferior to their illustrious rivals, and little changed after the break as the home side continued to dig deep. Rodrygo’s individual goal decided the
game, but the home side are out of the tournament with their pride intact on a night of surprises in Spain’s knockout competition, reports Xinhua.
Ceuta, who are bottom of the third-tier RFEF I, beat La Liga’s bottom side Elche 1-0 thanks to Rodri’s 44th-minute penalty. To make matters worse for Elche, Ezequiel Ponce was sent off 15 minutes into the second half in a disastrous result for a side that has only four points in La Liga.
Second division Sporting Gijon beat top-flight Rayo Vallecano 2-0 with two second-half goals from Serbian striker Uros Milovanovic, while fellow second division outfit Levante won a thriller 3-2 against Getafe. Valencia had no such problems as they cruised past third-tier La Nucia with goals from Justin Kluivert, Ilaix Moriba and Hugo Duro, while Villarreal recovered from a goal down to thrash second division Cartagena 5-1.

EPL: Arsenal held by Newcastle; Man Utd win
JAN 4 (AGEMCIES):
Manchester
3-0
The clash between first and third in London did not live up to its billing as Arsenal were frustrated by a Newcastle side who collected a 10th league clean sheet of the season.
Manchester United cemented their top-four place, moving level on points with Newcastle as goals by Casemiro, Luke Shaw and Marcus Rashford sealed a 3-0 victory at Old Trafford.
Arsenal, who failed to score for the first time this season in all competitions, have 44 points from 17 games with champions Manchester City on 36 after playing 16.
Newcastle have 35 from 18 matches, ahead of United on goal difference although they have played a game more.
After Everton held Manchester City away on Saturday to snap a three-
match losing run in the league, they crashed back to earth as they were hammered 4-1 at home by Brighton & Hove Albion.
Kaoru Mitoma gave Brighton the lead and Everton collapsed after the break as Evan Ferguson, Solly March and Pascal Gross scored in a five-minute burst that left the Goodison Park faithful stunned and heading for the exits.
Defeat left Everton just one point above the
relegation zone and with huge pressure mounting on manager Frank Lampard.
“Individual mistakes and collective defending issues. It is what it is,” Lampard, whose side could fall into the bottom three on Wednesday, said. “It is not a question of anger. We are disappointed. We want to win games.”
In the night’s other match, Fulham won 1-0 at Leicester City to move into seventh place in the table.
Arsenal had a 100% home league record this season but failed to penetrate the tightest defence in the division as Newcastle ground out a deserved point to remain unbeaten since August.
Eddie Nketiah had Arsenal’s best chance in the 87th minute but his low shot was superbly saved by Nick Pope. Arsenal ma nager Mikel Arteta’s frustration boiled over in stoppage time when he
reacted furiously to his side being denied a penalty for handball when a Granit Xhaka cross hit the arm of Jacob Murphy, although it would have been extremely harsh.
“We had some chances and there were two scandalous penalties that weren’t given,” Arteta said.
Manchester United are now five points clear of fifth-placed Tottenham Hotspur after a fourth successive league win. Brazil midfielder Casemiro volleyed them ahead from close range in the 23rd minute and they never looked like dropping points once Shaw made it 2-0 early in the second half.
“We scored great goals and I think we should have scored even more but we could have conceded one or two and I am not happy with that because David (de Gea) had to make good saves,” United manager Erik ten Hag said.
“I’m happy with the result. Today it was not our best game. We have to be honest, we didn’t play that smart as a team.”
United are back in action on Friday when they host Everton in the FA Cup third round.
Adelaide International 1: Medvedev advances to quarters
ADELAIDE, JAN 4 (IANS):
World No 7 Daniil Medvedev breezed past Serbian Miomir Kecmanovic 6-0, 6-3 to reach the Adelaide International 1 quarterfinal, here on Wednesday.
The third seed saved the only break point he faced to triumph after 67 minutes.
Medvedev now leads the pair’s ATP Head-to-Head record 3-0, winning all seven sets they have played. The 27-year-old will next play Karen Khachanov for a place in the semifinals. In his opening match of 2023 on Tuesday, Medvedev toiled for more than one hour to snatch the opening-set tiebreak before his Italian opponent Lorenzo Sonego retired hurt after three games.
“I played a little bit better today than yesterday but also Lorenzo played really good tennis hitting lines,” Adelaide International quoted Medvedev as saying. “Sometimes high-level tennis is about hit-
ting shots and a few points. Miomir didn’t manage to do the same but I’m happy with myself. I think I played better, served probably a little bit better,” he added.
In the women’s singles, Aryna Sabalenka edged Liudmila Samsonova 7-6(8), 7-6(3), in her first official singles match of the 2023 season to seal the Adelaide International 1 quarterfinal berth. She will take on the 2019 Roland Garros finalist Marketa Vondrousova, who dropped just four games in a dominant 6-0, 6-4 win over the former Top-20 player Kaia Kanepi of Estonia in the second-round match. “I mean when it’s 1-5 down it’s like nothing to lose and you just go for your shots without thinking. I think that’s really helped me to stay in the set and keep fighting, keep trying. It’s definitely tough to start after the bye and especially against a player like Liudmila,” Sabalenka said after the win.

“The Board will make every effort to aid and expedite the recovery process of Rishabh and will provide him with all the support he needs during this period,” he added.
Pant, 25, survived a horrific car accident when he was driving from Delhi to his hometown Rourkee but lost control on the NH-58 highway before hitting the divider.
Pant sustained cuts on his forehead, have a severely bruised back along with injuries on his knee and ankle.
While most injuries are superficial, the worrying factor will be the ankle and knee.
Being a centrally-contracted cricketer, his treatment is the board’s prerogative.

NEW DELHI, JAN 4
(PTI): Star India batter Rishabh Pant is all set to “undergo surgery for ligament tears”, the BCCI stated on Wednesday, effectively ruling him out of competitive cricket for an indefinite period.
Pant has been airlifted from a Dehradun hospital to Mumbai where he will undergo extensive treatment for ligament injuries in the knee and ankle which he had sustained during a car crash on December 30, BCCI secretary Jay Shah
said in a press release.
The BCCI decided to shift Pant to Mumbai by air ambulance since he is not in a position to fly by a commercial airline.
“Rishabh, who is currently receiving treatment for his injuries at Max Hospital, Dehradun following a car accident on 30th December, will be brought to Mumbai in an air ambulance,” Shah said in the release.
As reported earlier by PTI, Pant will be treated by noted sports orthopaedic surgeon Dinshaw Pardi -
wala. “He will be admitted to Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital and Medical Research Institute and will be under the direct supervision of Dr Dinshaw Pardiwala, Head - the Centre for Sports Medicine, and Director - Arthroscopy & Shoulder Service at the hospital,” Shah said.
“Rishabh will undergo surgery and subsequent procedures for ligament tears and will continue to be monitored by the BCCI Medical Team throughout his recovery and rehabilitation.
The MRIs of his injured knee and ankle couldn’t be performed as there was extensive swelling and hence the degree of tear is yet to be ascertained.
However, it is understood that any sports-related injury diagnosis and prognosis for a centrally-contracted cricketer will be done by the BCCI’s panel of doctors and the rehabilitation and recuperation will be managed by the Sports and Medical Science team at NCA, led by Dr Nitin Patel.
Pant will now be missing the Test series against Australia and also the cashrich Indian Premier League.
