Countrywide vaccination drive today
14 tribes, PH welcome Niki’s Norway reports deaths related truce offer
Beginning of end of COVID-19, says Harsh Vardhan
NEW DELHI, JAN 15 (PTI): India is all set to roll out the world’s biggest vaccination programme on Saturday with over 3 lakh healthcare workers to be inoculated on the first day of the much-anticipated drive against coronavirus which the Centre said is “probably the beginning of the end” of COVID-19. A total of 3,006 session sites across all states and union territories will be virtually connected during the launch at 10.30 am by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and around 100 beneficiaries will be vaccinated at each session site. “Tomorrow, January 16, India begins the panIndia rollout of COVID19 Vaccination drive. The launch will take place at 10:30 AM tomorrow morning,” he tweeted. On the eve of the rollout, Union Health Minister Dr. Harsh Vardhan reviewed the preparations and visited the dedicated COVID
NPF refutes rumours about MLAs joining BJP Correspondent
KOHIMA, JAN 15 (NPN): Amidst speculations that some NPF legislators were likely to join BJP to lead a new government in the state and against the backdrop of BJP national wanting to make its imprint in as many states, some NPF legislators have refuted the reports. When contacted, senior NPF legislator and former minister, Kuzholuzo (Azo) Nienu expressed ignorance about such a move. Speaking to Nagaland Post, Azo said that as far as he knew, there was no such move within his party or if any NPF legislator was prepared to join BJP to form a BJP government in the state. Azo, however, said NPF was open to forming an alternative coalition government with any political party but personally, joining the BJP was not an option. The rumour mills flew thick and fast on learning that NPF leader and former chief minister T.R. Zeliang is in Delhi to meet with high-level BJP leaders. Some within the state BJP said they were not aware of any such move being attempted by the NPF leader.

control room set up at the Nirman Bhawan premises of the health ministry. Speaking at a separate programme, he said, “Tomorrow is an important day...it is the last phase of the battle against coronavirus. I say, this is probably the beginning of the end of COVID now which is going to start tomorrow.” The vaccination drive has been planned in a phased manner, identifying priority groups. An online digital platform Co-WIN, developed by the health ministry, will be used to drive the vaccination programme. Adequate doses of both Covishield and Covaxin have already been delivered to all states and union territories. A dedicated 24x7 call centre -- 1075 -- has also been set up for addressing queries related to the COVID-19 pandemic, vaccine roll-out and the Co-WIN software.
BEIJING, JAN 15 (AGENCIES): In a disturbing news coming ahead of India beginning its mass vaccination drive from Saturday, Chinese publication Global Times Friday said that health experts in the country have called on Norway and other countries to suspend the use of Pfizer’s mRNA-based Covid-19 vaccine, after at least 23 deaths were reported by the local news outlets. As of Thursday, Norway has reported 23 deaths in connection with vaccination, the report said. “So far, 13 of these have been assessed. Common side effects may have contributed to a severe course in frail elderly people,” the Norwegian Medicines Agency posted on its website. “All the deaths have occurred in frail, elderly patients in nursing homes. All are over 80 years old and some of them over 90,” Norwegian media NRK reported. The Norwegian Medicines Agency, however, admitted that the studies that form the basis for the temporary approval of the vaccine
New UK COVID-19 strain: 114 people infected in India so far NEW DELHI, JAN 15 (AGENCIES): As many as 114 people have tested positive for the new UK variant of SARS-CoV-2 in India until Friday, said the Union Health Ministry. The ministry further informed that the situation is being monitored carefully and regular advice provided to states. The government had earlier said that patients of the new strain are admitted in single room isolation at designated Health Care facilities by respective states. Their close contacts have also been put under quarantine and comprehensive contact tracing has been initiated for co-travellers, family contacts and others, it said, adding that genome sequencing on other specimens is going on. Flights from the UK have resumed from 8 January. Passengers will have to undergo an RTPCR test both in the UK
before boarding their flight and after arriving in India. India’s total COVID active caseload continues to manifest a sustained downward movement and has dropped to 2.13 lakh comprising just 2.03% of India’s total infections, it added.
WHO wants Covid jabs in all countries within 100 days
World Health Organization’s director-general said Friday he wanted Covid-19 vaccination campaigns taking place in every nation across the globe within the next 100 days. “I want to see vaccination under way in every country in the next 100 days so that health workers and those at high risk are protected first,” Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus told a press conference in Geneva.
included very few people over the age of 85, and little is known about how any side effects will affect these age brackets. But the agency said: “We assume that the side-effects will largely be the same in the elderly as in those over 65 years of age.” Pfizer was yet to reach to the report. According to a Chinese immunologist, the new mRNA vaccine was developed in haste and had never been used on a large scale for the prevention of infectious disease, and its safety had not been confirmed for large-scale use in humans. Two Covid-19 vaccines -- Comirnaty, from BioNTec/Pfizer and Moderna -are being used in Norway. The vaccines have been developed on mRNA technology and have received temporary approval in the EU, according to the report. Norway launched a mass vaccination drive in December 2020, with the very oldest citizens and residents of nursing homes being offered vaccination first, including those over the age of 85.

Construct NH 129-A as per DPR: ZBN, ZCN DIMAPUR, JAN 15 (NPN): Zeliangrong Baudi Nagaland (ZBN) and Zeme Council Nagaland (ZCN) have demanded that construction of NH 129-A in Peren district be taken up as per the specification of detailed project report (DPR) and not as per the unilateral decision by ADC Peren and some public leaders in reducing the specification of the proposed 2-lane road. In a memorandum addressed to commissioner Nagaland, ZBN president CR Zeliang and ZCN president Dr Tumda Newme alleged that the ADC with some public leaders of Peren town had unilaterally recommended reduction of specification of the 2-lane road “for their vested interests”. Further, the two said the unilateral decision had been forwarded to the commissioner without consulting the stakeholders. They said the decision by
the ADC not only deprived the compensation rights of several landowners but also deprived the public from having their long cherished 2-lane road. The two organisations, said the laid down guidelines were clear and insisted that implementing agency NHIDCL and Peren district administration should have no second thoughts on paying damage compensation to deserving people. They said if any landowner’s demand was beyond the entitlement, it was the responsibility of Peren district administration to negotiate the rate of compensation as per the guidelines, instead of compromising the specification of the road. The two-ZBN and ZCN stated that the union ministry of road transport and highway (MoRTH) had accorded sanction for the construction of a 2-lane over NH-129A to boost eco-
nomic development in Peren district and in the larger interest of Nagaland. They said on completion the road will also serve as an alternative highway to Manipur leading to Myanmar They pointed out that tendering process for the 2-lane road was completed and work order issued (Package 1A). Under such a situation, they reasoned that there was no reason why status of the road should be changed at this point of time. Claiming that no landowner has refused to part land for construction of the road measuring 18-20 metre wide, the two said that reducing the width to 12-14 metre was “unacceptable” at any cost. ZBN and ZCN warned that in the event of failure to address the grievance, the public of Peren district would be left with no other option but to take appropriate course of action as deemed fit. Manipur Cong hold antifarm laws protest in Imphal
Congress leaders and workers protesting against three farm laws in Imphal on Friday. (NP)
Correspondent IMPHAL, Jan 15: Scores of Congress protesters briefly scuffled with police in Imphal on Friday as the opposition party protesting against the three controversial farm laws attempted to storm Raj Bhavan, Imphal. The Congress led by party senior leaders like MPCC president Govidas Konthoujam, former chief minister O Ibobi Singh who is also opposition leader, CWC member Gaikhangam tried to storm the Raj Bhavan after a sit-in-protest in front of the Imphal Congress Bhavan. A strong team of police prevented them from further proceeding in front of the treasury office, some 200 meters short of reaching the
Raj Bhavan. Protesters pushed and shoved police personnel backed by CRPF personnel guarding the Raj Bhavan during the brief scuffle. Congress leaders and workers taking part in the sit-in-protest tried to storm the Raj Bhavan after a group of party workers who had gone to meet the Governor returned without meeting her after the officials failed to give an appointment. The officials of Raj Bhavan did not give the appointment, allegedly saying that the Governor was taking a nap. “We went there to meet Governor and placed our demand for scrapping the three controversial farm laws,” MPCC general secretary Hareshwar Goshwami
who was among the group who went to meet the Governor said. After the group returned to the Congress Bhavan, all the Congress leaders, workers and supporters taking part in the sitin-protest marched towards the Raj Bhavan. While engaging in the scuffle with the police, protesters shouted various slogans terming the Modi led NDA government “antifarmers and anti-people”. They demanded immediate repealing of the three farm laws - The Farmers’ Produce Trade and Commerce (Promotion and Facilitation) Act, 2020, the Farmers (Empowerment and Protection) Agreement of Price Assurance and Farm Services Act, 2020, and the Essential Commodities (Amendment) Act, 2020. They also displayed placards protesting against BJP-led NDA government and the farm laws. “Modi rules black days for farmers” one of the placards read. Others read as “Save farmers from suicide”, “Farmers are backbone of our nation”, “Save farmers, save democracy”, “Repeal anti-farmer laws”, etc.

Sources said that following an instruction from the government, Major Khathing and a team of soldiers from Assam Rifles embarked on an arduous journey from Charduar in Assam on January 17, 1951, and after navigating through inhospitable terrain in subzero temperature, reached Tawang on February 6. After holding interactions with local village heads, he established Indian authority in that area which was under a loose Tibetan administration at that time, they said. A British Army officer, after finding it difficult to pronounce his name, “Relengnao”, decided to call him “Bob”, and he came to be known by this name, sources said.

Ball in Centre’s court
F
orced on the backfoot by adamant farmers who continue to insist that only a repeal of the three controversial farm laws will resolve the ongoing crisis, the government appears to be as adamant in not acceding to the demands. Thousands of farmers, mainly from Punjab, Haryana, and western Uttar Pradesh, have been camping at various border points of Delhi for nearly two months now against the three farm laws. They fear that these legislations will lead to the weakening of the minimum support price (MSP) system. The three contentious laws are the Farmers’ Produce Trade and Commerce (Promotion and Facilitation) Act, 2020, the Essential Commodities (Amendment) Act, 2020, and the Farmers (Empowerment and Protection) Agreement on Price Assurance and Farm Services Act, 2020. The government has asked the farmers to approach the Supreme Court. By telling the farmers to seek help from the court, the government appears to be confident that such an adjudication will be in its favour. The court set up a four-member committee of experts to resolve the protracted dispute between the farmers and the Centre. According to the court order, the first sitting of the panel will be within ten days from January 12 and the proceedings of the committee should wrap up in two months thereafter. The matter will be heard again after eight weeks. The farmers were not enthused by the Court’s four-member committee of experts as they pointed out that the members are pro-farm laws. Even as early as on December 21,2020, the All India Kisan Sabha (AIKS) had said the issue of the ongoing farmers’ protests against three new farm laws needs to be resolved by the government and not the Supreme Court. The government is certainly not disappointed by the Court’s order as the laws have only been kept in abeyance. Even while passing the three laws, the government used its brute strength in parliament. The three laws were passed after opposition MPs walked out when their request for a debate referring the laws to a parliamentary standing committee was brushed aside. Even in the Rajya Sabha, the deputy chairman refused the demand for a division. Having muzzled debate in parliament, the government is confident that by wearing out the farmers and with the three laws merely being suspended, it will have its way in the end. There are several farm committee reports such as Swaminathan which could serve as a guide before framing new laws. The problem arises when important legislation is not adequately debated and stakeholders consulted before passing laws. There are expert parliamentary committees whose observations should be considered in such matters. One of the reasons why the farmers are not willing to accept both the government’s assurances to amend some clauses in the farm laws and the court’s order to sit and talk things over, is because they believe the government of the day is going all out to favour a corporate house. The farmers also believe the government wants to tire them with prolonged discussions and hope they will suspend their agitation and go back so as to eventually break their ranks. The government hasn’t budged yet and it seems committed to protect not the farmers or people’s interest but that of a corporate giant.
DailyDevotion Do You Walk In White?
We were buried with Him…that just as Christ was raised from the dead…even so we also should walk in newness of life. —Romans 6:4 No one experiences complete sanctification without going through a “white funeral” — the burial of the old life. If there has never been this crucial moment of change through death, sanctification will never be more than an elusive dream. There must be a “white funeral,” a death with only one resurrection— a resurrection into the life of Jesus Christ. Nothing can defeat a life like this. It has oneness with God for only one purpose— to be a witness for Him. Have you really come to your last days? You have often come to them in your mind, but have you really experienced them? You cannot die or go to your funeral in a mood of excitement. Death means you stop being. You must agree with God and stop being the intensely striving kind of Christian you have been. We avoid the cemetery and continually refuse our own death. It will not happen by striving, but by yielding to death. It is dying— being “baptized into His death” (Romans 6:3). Have you had your “white funeral,” or are you piously deceiving your own soul? Has there been a point in your life which you now mark as your last day? Is there a place in your life to which you go back in memory with humility and overwhelming gratitude, so that you can honestly proclaim, “Yes, it was then, at my ‘white funeral,’ that I made an agreement with God.” “This is the will of God, your sanctification…” (1 Thessalonians 4:3). Once you truly realize this is God’s will, you will enter into the process of sanctification as a natural response. Are you willing to experience that “white funeral” now? Will you agree with Him that this is your last day on earth? The moment of agreement depends on you.

Post-mortem
The modern form of institutionalised casteism I ndia’s “tryst with destiny”, which Jawaharlal Nehru announced on the midnight of Independence, was supposed to bring dignity for its Dalit and Adivasi citizens. However, there have been numerous moments when this “pledge” has been undone. The suicide of Rohith Vemula, a PhD scholar from the Dalit community, five years ago on January 17, 2016, due to institutional apathy and boycott was one such moment. Vemula was neither the first nor the last Dalit or Adivasi student forced to take such a step. The suicides of a number of Dalit and Adivasi students, including Payal Tadvi in 2019, are not just statistics, but a lived reality of constant discrimination, bullying, humiliation, abuse, and boycott. The accounts of Dalits and Adivasi students across the country present a picture of discrimination within academic institutions by their peers, non-Dalit faculty, and authorities. These lived experiences continue to suffocate their education and life. Otherwise, Tadvi would have become the first doctor from her community in 80 years. While such incidents have raised issues of institutional discrimination, there are constant attempts, as was also done in Vemula’s case, to evade institutional
accountability by attributing these instances as being incident-specific. While such incidents have raised issues of institutional discrimination, there
are constant attempts, as was also done in Vemula’s case, to evade institutional accountability by attributing these instances as being incident-specific. This denial can no longer be accepted. Experts such as Sukhadeo Thorat have argued that if almost all those who have died by suicide in particular situations are Dalits and Adivasis, or if almost all those who fail and are expelled from higher education institutions are Dalits and Adivasis, or if most of the dropouts from elite institutions are Dalits and Adivasis, then this is not a coincidence. It resembles a pattern of modern forms of casteism, which has got entrenched in higher educational institutions. Allotment of hostels based on entrance marks, asking for the marks of Dalit students publicly to humiliate them, making a mockery of their English and physical appearance, stigmatising them as inefficient, not acting on incidents of caste-based harassment and abuses, not providing a support system, or reducing or stopping their fellowships, are forms of modern casteism in urban spaces. Discrimination has taken subtle and indirect forms, yet it has a direct impact on Dalits and Adivasis. It impacts their psychological well-being,
dreams, aspirations, and most importantly, their ability to survive in such an environment. Those days are gone when institutional liability would be measured on direct discrimination. If the institutions are not acting to end discrimination on campuses, then it only shows their complicity in maintaining a culture of discrimination and caste prejudices. Many of these institutions have not created mechanisms such as anti-discrimination or SC/ST cells and other remedies, as mandated by the University Grants Commission. Furthermore, the discourse on institutional accountability cannot happen without considering the larger pattern or the reasons for such exclusionary tendencies. In pre-independent India, the hierarchies of caste were maintained by restricting the presence of Dalits and Adivasis in educational institutions and services. When the Constitution ended this direct exclusion and ensured representation to these groups in public institutions, new forms of caste prejudices were evolved in urban spaces to dilute even the small amount of progress made by Dalits and Adivasis. This happened in two simultaneous cycles. First, the notions of merit and efficiency were
promoted to portray that students who come through quota are not meritorious at all. These mythical narratives to strengthen caste prejudices do not contain even an iota of reality, as empirical studies conducted by economists suggest that reservations do not dilute efficiency at all. In fact, according to economist Ashwini Deshpande, affirmative action in hiring might improve economic performance. Second, the cases of atrocities, boycott, and harassment against Dalits and Adivasis have also arisen, as they asserted their presence through reservations and other schemes. The purpose has been to maintain the status quo of caste hierarchy. Institutional discrimination in academic and professional institutions reflects this trend. Thus, institutional accountability is linked not only with ending caste-discrimination on campuses, but also with ensuring due representation. A moral institutional liability must, therefore, be put on the institutes of eminence, private universities and companies, media organisations, the legal profession, and the higher judiciary, where reservation is not applied. These institutions cannot avoid the question of providing representation. They can follow the example of private institutions in
the United States, which follow a voluntary affirmative action programme to provide representation. If institutions in India do not ensure representation, it only undermines their legitimacy. India needs to move beyond the tokenism of having one Dalit chief justice or two Dalit presidents, and ensure adequate representation to its Dalit and Adivasi citizens in all fields. It needs institutional leaders who can acknowledge structural inequalities, and take actions to dismantle exclusionary mechanisms and culture. The first step for institutional leaders thus is to check on the representation in their own institutions or offices. The burden is more on those who lead elite institutions, as excellence cannot lie in exclusion. Vemula’s death had sparked nation-wide protests and outrage from Dalits, focused on ending caste discrimination in institutions. As we approach the fifth anniversary of the tragedy, the concerns of institutional discrimination remain unaddressed. Transparency on vaccines is necessary, PMKVY 3.0: Inverting the Skill Development Pyramid misinformation must be checked S

harrufuddin Ahmad was working as a labourer in a big city in Assam when the pandemic struck, forcing him to return to his native village in Assam’s Darang district. Unable to find livelihood, he struggled to make ends meet. That was until he enrolled in a short-term training where he learned the skill of a tyre fitter, a course that was made possible because of mobile training centres introduced by the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (MSDE) under the Skill India mission. Today, Sharrufuddin works in a tyre repairing workshop and is able to look after his family. Sharrufuddin’s story could be anyone’s. Millions lost their livelihood to the sudden attack of the disease. In order to address the woes of so many Indian workers, the government went into overdrive. Skill training programmes were given impetus to reach the maximum and lakhs benefited from the short-term trainings and recognition of prior learning (RPL) certifications that allowed them to find livelihood even in remote locations. For a country as large as India, skill development is an uphill task. Vast resources have to be invested — human and financial — in developing skills of such big numbers. The Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship, instituted in 2014 with a view to orchestrate synergized efforts in training and entrepreneurship development, has introduced a slew of measures to speed up skilling with standards. Skill training gained importance with the launch of National Skill Development Mission, a new Skill Development and Entrepreneurship Policy in 2015, common norms and standards for schemes and the Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana on 15 July 2015, under which more than 1.2 crore youth
have been successfully trained through improved standardization of the skilling ecosystem in the country. The next and third phase of Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana (PMKVY) has been uniquely designed to boost demand for job roles at the regional level. Adopting a demand-driven approach, PMKVY 3.0 is aimed at connecting local youth with local jobs. The new-age initiative recognizes the importance of online training in a post-COVID world, and will focus on blended learning in addition to classroom-based training for certain job roles. Decentralization through the involvement of local level representative institutions in the formulation of development plans as well as their implementation is being encouraged primarily for efficient utilization of resources and ensuring more reasonable sharing of benefit from development. To drive the ‘Skill India’ agenda in ‘Mission Mode’, State Skill Development Missions (SSDM) were launched in nearly all states to manage skill development. In turn, most states also created designated District Skill Committees (DSCs) to facilitate skill development at scale with speed while adhering to high standards. In the scheme of all things, DSCs will play a central role in the implementation of PMKVY 3.0 where they will be entrusted to carry out districtlevel skill gap and demand assessment, mobilization and counseling of candidates and formation of training batches. Further, post training support and handholding the candidates after placements, besides addressing the grievances will also fall under the purview of DSCs. There is still a huge gap between industry requirements and skills at the local level owing to a number of reasons including inadequate training
infrastructure, inappropriate mix of skills and education, outdated curricula, limited industry interfaces and limited standards. DSCs will be empowered to undertake determination of sectoral priorities at the statelevel based on assessment of the needs of each sector and related industries to enhance qualitative and quantitative skill availability for the sector. We have seen some encouraging results under SANKALP (Skill Acquisition and Knowledge Awareness for Livelihood Promotion), where decentralization is the focus. The programme attempts to create linkage by encouraging SSDMs to provide guidance to DSCs with respect to preparation of district plans and build capacities of DSCs through technical assistance and training. With a population of an estimated median age of 28 years by 2022, in comparison to 37 in China and the United States, 45 in Western Europe and 49 in Japan, India is clearly pegged to be the ‘Human Resource Capital’ of the world. However, the window of demographic dividend is expected to last five decades, i.e. 20052055. Decentralization has been at the core of institutional reforms in a number of developing and transitional economies. Development plans with a bottom-up approach have seen good results in reducing social and gender inequalities, and in optimum distribution and use of resources. Decentralized planning can also be an enabler in achieving overall development keeping in view the local resources, needs and aspirations to create an ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ and change the fate of many like it has done for Sharrufuddin Ahmad. EAM Jaishankar holds talks with Nepalese counterpart Gyawali
New Delhi, Jan 15 (PTI): External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Friday held talks with his Nepalese counterpart Pradeep Kumar Gyawali with a focus on various key aspects of the bilateral relations. The talks are taking place under the framework of the Indo-Nepal joint commission meeting (JCM), officials said. Gyawali arrived here on Thursday on a three-day visit. He is the first senior political leader from Nepal to visit India after the ties between the two countries came under strain following a border row. External Affairs Ministry Spokesperson Anurag Srivastava on Thursday gave clear indication that the boundary issue is unlikely to be discussed at the JCM. Responding to questions on the border row, he said at a media briefing: “Our position on the boundary issue is well known. Let
me say that the JCM and boundary talks are separate mechanisms.” He said the JCM is an important mechanism that provides the opportunity of reviewing the entire gamut of bilateral partnership.
Rahul Gandhi New Delhi, Jan 15 (AGENCIES):Former Congress president Rahul Gandhi on Friday alleged that the Narendra Modi government was being “remote controlled” by a handful of corporate houses and the three farm laws were an example of Modi trying to “hand over” what belongs to farmers. He said the Centre’s talks with farmers were “delaying tactics” to tire out the farmers as Mr. Modi does not respect farmers but the government would have to repeal the laws. The Congress leader also took strong objection to farmers being referred to as “Khalistanis” by some leaders of the ruling party. Speaking to reporters at Jantar Mantar, where Congress MPs from Punjab have been protesting for nearly 40 days now, Mr. Gandhi said the Supreme Court-appointed expert committee was a maya [illusion] and the myth will be busted soon. To coincide with the ninth round of talks between farmers’ unions and the Centre, the Congress ob-

hand combat on June 15 last in Galwan Valley, an incident that marked the most serious military conflict between the two sides in decades. China is yet to disclose the number of its soldiers killed and injured in the clash though it officially admitted to have suffered casualties. According to an American intelligence report, the number of casualties on the Chinese side was 35. Gen Naravane also noted that eight rounds of military talks were held between India and China to bring the situation under control. “Our efforts will continue to find a solution to the current situation on the basis of mutual and equal security,” he said. About cross-border terrorism emanating from Pakistan, he said there has been 44 per cent increase in ceasefire violations that reflects the neighbouring country’s sinister design. “Strong response is being given to the enemy on the other border. Pakistan continues to provide safe haven to terrorists. In the training camps, across the LOC around 300-400 terrorists are ready to infiltrate,” he said. “There was an increase of 44 per cent in the ceasefire violations last year which is proof of Pakistan’s sinister plans. There were also attempts to smuggle weapons using drones,” he added. Pakistan often provides cover fire to help terrorists sneak into Jammu and Kashmir.

New Delhi, Jan 15 (PTI): In a tough message to China amid the Ladakh standoff, Army Chief Gen MM Naravane on Friday said no one should make any mistake of testing India’s patience even as he asserted that a befitting response was given to the “conspiracy” of unilaterally changing the status quo along the northern frontier. Gen Naravane at the same time said India is committed to resolve the over eight-month-long military standoff with China through talks. In his address at the Army Day parade in Delhi Cantonment, Gen Naravane said the sacrifice of the “Galwan heroes” in eastern Ladakh in June last year will not go waste and that the Indian Army will not allow any harm to the country’s sovereignty and security. “We are committed to resolve disputes through talks and political efforts but no one should make any mistake of testing our patience,” he said in the presence of the country’s top military brass including Chief of Defence Staff Gen Bipin Rawat, Navy Chief Admiral Karambir Singh and IAF Chief Air Chief Marshal RKS Bhadauria. Indian and Chinese troops are locked in a bitter standoff in eastern Ladakh since May 5 as multiple rounds of military and diplomatic talks have not yet produced any breakthrough. Party workers held protests in States, including Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Bihar, West Bengal, Jharkhand, Odisha, Chhattisgarh and Rajasthan. In Uttar Pradesh, the police detained party leaders when they attempted to take out a march to the Raj Bhavan in Lucknow. In Delhi, Gandhi led the protests organised by the State unit and was joined by other leaders, including party general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra. “These farm laws have been brought to finish off the farmers,” Gandhi said in his brief address to party workers who had gathered near the Chandgi Ram Akhada in north Delhi, close to the Raj Bhavan, the official residence of the Lieutenant Governor. Soon after, he shifted to the protest venue of Congress MPs at Jantar Mantar, where he addressed the media. “Narendra Modi does not have basic respect for farmers. He does not even care if over 100 farmers die. He thinks he has the power and the protesting farmers will tire out after some days but they will not relent,” he said, adding, “The talks are being held only to delay. PM Modi thinks he has the power and will tire the farmers out, but he is mistaken.”

More than 500 pages of Republic TV editor-inchief Arnab Goswami’s alleged chats with former CEO of Broadcast Audience Research Council (BARC) were leaked on social media, with multiple instances to show many alleged conspiracies and unprecedented access to power in the present government. If true, this would come as the latest development in the ongoing TRP scam case, revealing much information on Arnab’s proximity with the Prime Minister’s office and other ruling party members, and how he tried to manipulate TRPs in his favour. Dutch government resigns over At least 34 dead in Indonesia quake child welfare payments scandal
MAMUJU (INDONESIA), JAN 15 (AP): A strong, shallow earthquake shook Indonesia’s Sulawesi island just after midnight, toppling homes and buildings, triggering landslides and killing at least 34 people. More than 600 people were injured during the magnitude 6.2 quake, which sent people fleeing their homes in the darkness on Friday. Authorities were still collecting information about the full scale of casualties and damage in the affected areas. There were reports of many people trapped in the rubble of collapsed homes and buildings. In a video released by the National Disaster Mitigation Agency, a girl stuck in the wreckage of a house cried out for help and said she heard the sound of other family members also trapped. “Please help me, it hurts,” the girl told rescuers, who replied that they desperately wanted to help her. The rescuers said an excavator was needed to save

the girl and others trapped in collapsed buildings. Other images showed a severed bridge and damaged and flattened houses. TV stations reported the earthquake damaged part of a hospital and patients were moved to an emergency tent outside. Another video showed a father crying, asking for help to save his children buried under their toppled house. “They are trapped inside, please help,” he cried. Thousands of displaced people were evacuated to
temporary shelters. The quake was centred 36 kilometres (22 miles) south of West Sulawesi provinces Mamuju district, at a depth of 18 kilometres (11 miles), the US Geological Survey said. The Indonesian disaster agency said the death toll climbed to 34 as rescuers in Mamuju retrieved 26 bodies trapped in the rubble of collapsed homes and buildings. The agency said in a statement that eight people were killed and 637 others
were injured in Mamuju’s neighboring district of Majene. It said at least 300 houses and a health clinic were damaged and about 15,000 people were being housed in temporary shelters in the district. Power and phones were down in many areas. West Sulawesi Administration Secretary Muhammad Idris told TVOne that the governor’s office building was among those that collapsed in Mamuju, the provincial capital, and many people there remain trapped. Rescuer Saidar Rahmanjaya said a lack of heavy equipment was hampering the operation to clear the rubble from collapsed houses and buildings. He said his team was working to save 20 people trapped in eight buildings, including in the governor’s office, a hospital and hotels. “We are racing against time to rescue them,” Rahmanjaya said. President Joko Widodo said in a televised address
that he had ordered his social minister and the chiefs of the military, police and disaster agency to carry out emergency response measures and search and rescue operations as quickly as possible. “I, on behalf of the Government and all Indonesian people, would like to express my deep condolences to families of the victims,” Widodo said. The National Search and Rescue Agency’s chief Bagus Puruhito said rescuers from the cities of Palu, Makassar, Balikpapan and Jakarta were being deployed to boost rescue efforts in Mamuju and Majene. Two ships were heading to the affected areas from Makassar and Balikpapan carrying rescuers and search and rescue equipment, while a Hercules plane carrying supplies was on its way from Jakarta. Among dead in Majene were three people killed when their homes were flattened by the quake while they were sleeping, said Sirajuddin, the districts disaster agency chief.
THE HAGUE, JAN 15 (AP): Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte and his entire Cabinet resigned on Friday to take political responsibility for a scandal involving investigations into child welfare payments that wrongly labelled thousands of parents as fraudsters. In a nationally televised speech, Rutte said he had informed King Willem-Alexander of his decision and pledged that his government would continue work to compensate affected parents as quickly as possible and to battle the coronavirus. “We are of one mind that if the whole system has failed, we all must take responsibility, and that has led to the conclusion that I have just offered the king, the resignation of the entire Cabinet,” Rutte said. The move was seen
as largely symbolic; Ruttes government will remain in office in a caretaker mode until a new coalition is formed after a March 17 election in the Netherlands. The resignation brings to an end a decade in office for Rutte, although his party is expected to win the election, putting him first in line to begin talks to form the next government. If he succeeds in forming a new coalition, Rutte would most likely again become prime minister. The Netherlands is the third European country thrown into political uncertainty this week in the midst of the coronavirus crisis. In Estonia, the government resigned over a corruption scandal, while Italian Premier Giuseppe Conte’s governing coalition is at risk of collapse after a small partner party
withdrew its support. Rutte said earlier this week that his government would be able to keep taking tough policy decisions in the battle against the coronavirus even if it were in caretaker mode. The Netherlands is in a tough lockdown until at least February 9, and the government is considering imposing an overnight curfew amid fears about new, more contagious variants of the virus. “To the Netherlands I say: Our struggle against the coronavirus will continue,” Rutte said. On Thursday, the leader of the Dutch opposition Labour Party stepped down because he was minister of social affairs in a governing coalition led by Rutte when the country’s tax office implemented a tough policy of tracking down fraud with child welfare.

and livelihoods across our planet,” Secretary-General António Guterres said. He pointed out that at 1.2 degrees of warming above pre-industrial levels, the world is already witnessing unprecedented weather extremes in every region and on every continent. “We are headed for a catastrophic temperature rise of 3 to 5 degrees Celsius this century,” he said. “Making peace with nature is the defining task of the 21st century. It must be the top priority for everyone, everywhere,” he said. La Nina, which began in late last year, is expected to continue into the earlymiddle part of 2021. La Nina refers to the large-scale cooling of the ocean surface temperatures in the central and eastern equatorial Pacific Ocean, coupled with changes in the tropical atmospheric circulation, namely winds, pressure and rainfall. It usually has the opposite impacts on weather and climate as El Nino, which is the warm phase of the so-called El Nino Southern Oscillation (ENSO).

UNITED NATIONS, JAN 15 (PTI): The year 2020 was one of the three warmest years on record and rivalled 2016 for the top spot, indicating the pace of the “human-induced” climate change which is now as powerful as the force of nature, the UN weather agency has said. All five datasets surveyed by the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) concur that 20112020 was the warmest decade on record, in a persistent long-term climate change trend. The warmest six years have all been since 2015, with 2016, 2019 and 2020 being the top three. The differences in average global temperatures among the three warmest years are indistinguishably small. The average global temperature in 2020 was about 14.9°C, 1.2 (± 0.1) °C above the preindustrial (1850-1900) level. “The confirmation by the World Meteorological Organisation that 2020 was one of the warmest years on record is yet another stark reminder of the relentless pace of climate change, which is destroying lives

SYED MUSHTAQ ALI T20 TROPHY 2020-21
Nagaland beat Sikkim for 2nd consecutive win Arjun Tendulkar makes debut as Mumbai crash out
Match in progress between Nagaland and Sikkim on Friday.
DIMAPUR, JAN 15 (NPN): Nagaland hammered Sikkim by 100 runs to register their second successive win in Plate group match of the Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 Trophy 2020-21 in Chennai on Friday. Led by half centuries from Jonathan Rongsen (56) and SS Mundhe (54), Nagaland scored a competitive 176 for 4 in the allotted overs after being put into bat. Stuart Binny and Hokaito Zhimomi also contributed 30 and 21 runs respectively. For Sikkim, Ajay took three wickets. Chasing the target,
Sikkim were bowled out for 76 runs in 14.2 overs with tight bowling from Nagaland bowlers led by Khrievitso Kense, who took three wickets. Stuart Binny, Nagaho Chishi, SS Mundhe, Tahmeed and Joshua took one wicket each. Anureet Singh was the highest scorer for Sikkim, who made 41 runs. Nagaland will next play Mizoram on January 17. Siraj targeted again by section of Gabba crowd
Mohammed Siraj
B ri s ban e , J an 1 5 (IANS): Right-arm fast bowler Mohammed Siraj on Friday once again found himself at the receiving end of rude behaviour from spectators as he was repeatedly labelled a “grub” by a group on the opening day of the fourth and final Test between Australia and India at the Gabba. A report in Sydney Morning Herald quoted a spectator as saying that Siraj was repeatedly called a “grub” by vocal spectators in front of Section 215 and 216 at the stadium. ‘Grub’, an Australian slang, is used for a person who is unclean or who has messy habits.
According to the spectator, debutant off-spinner Washington Sundar was also subjected to the same chat from the unruly section. “The guys behind me have been calling -- shouting -- both Washington and Siraj grubs,” a spectator named Kate was quoted as saying in the report. “It started targeted at Siraj and it was a chant similar to the SCG one [in which fans sung to the tune of Que Sera, Sera but substituted the lyrics with Que Shiraz, Shiraz]. But this time it was Siraj. I suspect it’s not a coincidence that it’s Siraj being targeted post the SCG stuff,” she added. The report further said that the spectator was seated in a section of the stadium where several men dressed as lifeguards had a beer snake dismantled by security guards and another man was escorted out of the ground for standing on his seat and starting an “Aussie, Aussie, Aussie” chant.
was abandoned due to bad weather. Results of Plate group (Chennai): Meghalaya 89/9 in 20 overs (Anuj Raj 3/15) lost to Bihar 92/4 in 16 overs (Shasheem Rathour 33, Sakibul Gani 31 n.o.). Chandigarh 200/3 in 20 overs (Manan Vohra 85, Shivam Bhambri 62, Ankit Kaushik 36 n.o.) beat Mizoram 111/6 in 20 overs (Gaurav Gambhir 3/11). Manipur 149/8 in 20 overs (Akhilesh Sahani 3/30, Techi Doria 3/29) beat Arunachal Pradesh 104 in 19.4 overs.
Juggernauts to play Imperials in WCC final DIMAPUR, JAN 15 (NPN): Juggernauts will take on Imperials in the final of the 25th edition of Winter Cricket Challenge on Saturday. On the way to final, Juggernauts beat Etsujhuka Youth League (EYL) by 14 runs in a low scoring encounter. Batting first after winning the toss, Juggernauts set a target of 113 runs. However, tight bowling from its bowlers led by Hakao Murry, who claimed three wickets, helped Juggernauts defend the target. Hakao was named man of the match. Earlier, Imperials beat Kohima Lotha Students Union (KLSU) by six wickets. Electing to bat first after winning the toss, KLSU managed to set a target of 49 runs. Yanrenthung Ngullie, who claimed six wickets, was named the man of the match.
PTI Adds: Budding left-arm pacer Arjun Tendulkar, who is the son of iconic former batsman Sachin Tendulkar, made his Mumbai senior team debut on Friday in a Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy match against Haryana, which the hosts lost by eight wickets in Mumbai. In the Elite Group E clash played at the suburban BKC ground, Mumbai made 143 after opting to bat first, a target which Haryana overhauled in 17.4 overs. Arjun had an off day with the ball as he returned with rather unimpressive figures of 1/34 in the three overs that he bowled. He dismissed Haryana opener Chaitya Bishnoi (4) cheaply after he edged a delivery to wicket-keeper Aditya Tare to claim his maiden wicket for the Mumbai senior team. Incidentally, his legendary father’s last Ranji Trophy game was against Haryana back in 2013. Arjun didn’t get the chance to face a single delivery when Mumbai batted as the team was bundled out in 19.3 overs. Haryana then rode on one-down Himanshu Rana’s blazing unbeaten 75 off 53 balls to chase down the target with consummate ease. The 21-year-old Arjun has now qualified for the IPL auctions, as he has made his debut for the Mumbai team. Tendulkar junior was added to the Mumbai squad, along with another pacer Krutik Hanagavadi, by the Salil Ankola-led selection committee, after the BCCI permitted a total of 22 players to be selected.

KOCHI, Jan 15 (Agencies): East Bengal's recent unbeaten run was in danger of being ended by Kerala Blasters who were leading 1-0 till the last few seconds of injury time in their Indian Super League match at the Tilak Maidan, Vasco on Friday. However, Red and Golds defender Scott Neville scored from a corner which was essentially the last piece of action before the final whistle to snatch a 1-1 draw, The Indian Express reported. The goal cancelled out Jordan Murray's 64th minute goal as the two sides settled for a point with East Bengal's unbeaten run now stretching to an impressive six games. Both teams needed a big result to keep their playoff hopes alive and Blasters had the brighter start when the game began as Murray drew a point blank save from Debjit Majumder in the fifth minute. 4th Test: India hang on despite Labuschagne century on day 1 B ri s ban e , J an 1 5 (IANS): Mar nus Labuschagne on Friday once again lived a charmed life as he went on to score a brilliant hundred to help Australia have a slight edge over India on Day One of the fourth and final Test at The Gabba. At Stumps, Australia reached 274/5, with skipper Tim Paine and Cameron Green remaining unbeaten at 38 and 28 respectively. For the hosts, Labuschagne starred with the bat scoring 108, with the help of nine fours, while Matthew Wade and Steve Smith also made notable contributions of 45 and 36 respectively. Earlier, electing to bat, the hosts didn’t get off to a good start as both David Warner and Marcus Harris went back to the dressing room with just 17 runs on the scoreboard against a very inexperienced Indian bowling line-up. Warner was the first wicket to fall as he got caught in the slips in the very first over of the innings bowled by Mohammed Siraj. Rohit Sharma took a good, low catch at second slip to send the left-handed batsman back in the Australian dressing room at his individual

score of just 1. Harris, playing his first match of the series as he replaced injured Will Pucovski, then tried to stitch a partnership with Labuschagne but got out on the first ball bowled by Shardul Thakur in the ninth over. At his individual score of 5, Harris was caught as square leg by Washington Sundar. However, Labuschagne and Smith took control over the innings and stitched a useful partnership and when Australia looked to be in control, debutant off-spinner Washington Sundar claimed the big wicket of Smith for
36 runs, caught at short midwicket by Sharma. Wade, who came to bat after the fall of Smith’s wicket, stitched a brilliant partnership (113 runs) with Labuschagne, before Wade became the first Test scalp of T Natarajan. Natarajan, playing his first Test, then removed Labuschagne and brought India back into the game. However, Paine and Green then played cautiously and stitched an unbeaten 61-run partnership to help the hosts end the opening day of the series decider, having the upper hand.

Murray’s Aus Open in doubt after COVID+ve L o nd o n , J an 1 5 (Agencies): For mer world number one Andy Murray’s participation at the Australian Open is in doubt after the Briton tested positive for coronavirus. The 33-year-old Scot was set to fly out to Melbourne on a chartered flight arriving there over the next 36 hours. Instead he remains in quarantine and isolating at home in London. Murray, who is said to be in good health, remains hopeful he will be allowed to travel safely at a later date and compete as planned. The five-time Australian Open runner-up pulled out of last week’s ATP event in Delray Beach as he wanted to “minimise the risks” of catching a transatlantic flight to Florida. The Australian Open will start on February 8 at Melbourne Park, three weeks later than usual, because of the coronavirus pandemic. Players must test negative before taking one of the 15 chartered flights which have been put on by tournament organisers and will operate at 25% capacity - to Australia.
Enobakhare and the Nigerian striker almost created a chance out of nothing when he danced past the Blasters players to the edge of the box but ended up shooting well wide. When the second half resumed, Blasters nearly shot themselves in the foot when a cutback into the box by Enobakhare was
almost turned into his own net by Blasters skipper Jessel Carneiro but he made amends just in time to clear it away. After a quiet period of play, Blasters finally managed to break the deadlock in the 64th minute when Albino caught out the entire East Bengal team with a long ball into the path of
Murray. The striker managed to get ahead of his marker and despite losing his balance, he managed to steer it past Debjit to score his sixth goal of the campaign. It wasn't the most clinical finishes but Murray was rewarded for his alertness and effort. There was an injury concern for Blasters when Jessel had to be replaced in the 68th minute which saw new signing Juande making his ISL debut. To the credit of the Blasters defence, they managed to keep the dangerous Enobakhare quiet and the 22-year-old was not able to influence the game much. Blasters were just seconds away from a win when they conceded a corner and East Bengal made them pay with Neville heading it in to leave the Kerala players shell shocked. SATURDAY’S MATCH

Bilbao shock Real Madrid to reach Spanish Super Cup final
Raul Garcia slotted home the opening goal for Athletic Bilbao in the 18th minute.
Malaga (Spain), Jan 15 (IANS): Athletic Club Bilbao shocked Real Madrid 2-1 in the Spanish Super Cup semi-final and booked a place in Sunday’s final against Barcelona. Two goals from Bilbao striker Raul Garcia earned the Basque side a well-deserved win in only their second game under the direction of new coach Marcelino Garcia Toral, reports Xinhua news agency. Real Madrid began brightly with Hazard seeing a shot saved by Unai Simon before he was closed down by the Bilbao defense after a
neat pass from Casemiro. But Bilbao, known as “The Lions”, struck first when Raul Garcia opened the scoring in the 18th minute When Lucas Vazquez’s pass from the back was intercepted by Dani Garcia, who slid the ball through for Raul Garcia to beat Courtois with a right-footed shot. Madrid defender Lucas Vazquez misread the flight of a cross from Anda Capa and then pulled down Inigo Martinez to concede a penalty, which Garcia dispatched high into Courtois’ goal on 38 minutes. Real Madrid tried to up the pace in the second
half as Bilbao sat deeper, but Bilbao keeper Unai Simon hardly had to make a save as two stunning efforts from Marco Arsenio bounced back off the woodwork. Karim Benzema pulled a goal back for Madrid after a long VAR check with 15 minutes left to play. Madrid had Courtois to thank for a great save to stop Asier Villalibtre from adding a third for Bilbao. Bilbao was able to manage the closing minutes well despite a six minutes of injury time and they and not Madrid will now face Barca for the first title of the season.
