China builds village inside Arunachal Pradesh

SGI map shows Chinese village lies well within India

NEW DELHI, JAN 18 (AGENCIES): China has constructed a new village in Arunachal Pradesh, consisting of about 101 homes, show satellite images accessed exclusively by NDTV. The same images, dated November 1, 2020, have been analysed by several experts approached by NDTV, who confirmed that the construction, approximately 4.5 kms within Indian territory of the de facto border, will be of huge concern to India. Though this area is Indian territory, according to official government maps, it has been in effective Chinese control since 1959. However, earlier only a Chinese military post existed, but this time a full-fledged village that can house thousands has been built. The village, located on the banks of the River Tsari Chu, lies in the Upper Subansiri district, an area which has been long disputed by India and China and has been marked by armed

NJCF dismayed over false prophecies DIMAPUR, JAN 18 (NPN): Nagaland Joint Christian Forum (NJCF) has expressed deep dismay over the false propaganda using God and prophecy to demean the sanctity of the church and prophecy. In a statement issued through its vice president Rev Dr N Paphino, NJCF observed that unfounded and self-styled prophecy has created more confusion among the people during this difficult time when the world is going through the life-threatening pandemic. It alleged that some people who call themselves prayer people of habitually creating fear psychosis among the people misusing the name of God. Pointing out that the church holds the institution of prophecy in high esteem, NJCF stressed that the prophecy could not be used at every turn to go against the plan and programmes that were for the good of people. It said those who saw things for their self-interest could not be trusted. “How many times a prophecy can be proven wrong for those who propagate falsehood?” it asked. (Cont’d on p-8)

conflict. It was constructed in the eastern range of the Himalayas even as Indian and Chinese soldiers confronted each other in their deadliest clash in decades, thousands of kilometres away in the Western Himalayas in Ladakh. The latest image that establishes the village in question is dated November 1, 2020. The image dated a little more than a year before that - August 26, 2019 - does not show any construction activity. So, the village was set up in the last year. In response to NDTV’s detailed questions, the For-

eign Ministry, which was also sent the satellite images, did not challenge what the pictures show. “We have seen recent reports on China undertaking construction work along the border areas with India. China has undertaken such infrastructure construction activity in the past several years.” The government says it remains committed to improving border infrastructure. “Our Government too has stepped up border infrastructure including the construction of roads, bridges etc, which has provided much needed connectivity

to the local population along the border.’’ In October last year, China’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson said, “For some time, the Indian side has been ramping up infrastructure development along the border and stepping up military deployment that is the root cause for the tensions between the two sides.” There are, however, no signs of Indian road or infrastructure development in the immediate vicinity of the new Chinese village. In fact, in November 2020, which is when this satellite image was taken,

Proposed tractor rally on Jan 26: It’s law & order matter, says SC NEW DELHI, JAN 18 (PTI): Supreme Court told the Centre on Monday that the proposed tractor rally on the Republic Day by farmers protesting against the new farm laws is a “law and order” matter and Delhi Police is the first authority to decide who should be allowed to enter the national capital. A bench headed by Chief Justice S A Bobde, while hearing the Centre’s application seeking an injunction against the proposed tractor or trolley march or any other kind of protest which seeks to disrupt the gathering and celebrations on January 26, said that police has all the authority to deal with the matter. “Does the Supreme Court say as to what are the powers of police and how they will exercise them? We are not going to tell you what to do,” said the bench, also comprising Justices L N

Rao and Vineet Saran. The apex court told Attor ney General K.K Venugopal that it will take up the matter for hearing on Wednesday, January 20. “The question of entering into Delhi is a law and order matter and will be determined by the police,” the bench said, adding, “Mr Attorney General, we are adjourning the matter and you have all the authority to deal with this matter.” Centre, in an application filed through Delhi Police, has said that any proposed march or protest which seeks to disrupt and disturb the Republic Day celebrations will cause an “embarrassment to the nation”. During the hearing conducted through videoconferencing, the bench said who should be allowed to enter Delhi and who should not be allowed has to be dealt with by the police as

the court is not the “first authority”. The bench told Venugopal that the apex court is seized of the issue of farm laws and “we have not said anything on police powers”. SC then asked, “Are farmers unions appearing today?”. Senior advocate Dushyant Dave said he was representing some farmer unions in the matter. Advocate AP Singh, representing one of the farmers’ body, told the bench about the affidavit filed by them requesting the top court to remove the remaining three members of the court-appointed committee to resolve the issue of farm laws and select people who can do the job “on the basis of mutual harmony”. “We will hear everyone on that day (next date of hearing),” the bench said, adding, “We will hear you in the same combination of bench”.

BJP MP from Arunachal Pradesh, Tapir Gao, had warned Lok Sabha of Chinese incursions in his state, referring specifically to the Upper Subansiri district. On Monday, he told NDTV that this includes the construction of a new double-lane road. “Construction is still going on. China has entered more than 60-70 kms inside the upper Subansiri district if you follow the path along the river. They are constructing a road along the river known locally as the Lensi as it flows in the direction of the Subansiri river.’’ The Foreign Ministry did not respond directly to a question on whether the village construction has been diplomatically raised with Beijing. It said to NDTV, ‘’The government keeps a constant watch on all developments having a bearing on India’s security and takes all the necessary measures to safeguard its sovereignty and territorial integrity.’’ An authentic online map of the Surveyor General of India, used by the government as its official map, clearly shows that the Chinese village lies well within Indian territory.

Booked for sedition, 2 scribes released from detention in Manipur IMPHAL, JAN 18 (PTI): A day after detaining two journalists for sedition following the publication of an article “endorsing revolutionary ideologies” on their news portal, the Manipur police on Monday released them as they admitted that it was published due to oversight, an officer said. The police had booked executive editor Paojel Chaoba and editor-in-chief Dhiren Sadokpam of The Frontier Manipur online news portal under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act. The move followed the publication of an article, “Revolutionary journey in a mess” by M Joy Luwang, in the website on January 8. It criticised the “revolutionary groups” of Manipur for moving away from their cause. “They were detained on Sunday evening as part of the investigation process,” Imphal West SP said.

580 adverse events reported, 2 deaths not linked to vaccine: Centre

NEW DELHI, JAN 18 (AGENCIES): A total of 3.8 lakh people have been vaccinated since the rollout of the coronavirus vaccines three days ago, the government said today. Among them, 580 cases of adverse reactions have been observed and seven persons have been hospitalized. Two persons have died also but neither deaths are related to vaccines, the government said. A death was reported from Moradabad, Uttar Pradesh last evening. Mahipal Singh, 46, a ward boy at a government hospital, had received the vaccine shot 24 hours before. The district’s Chief Medical Officer has said the death is unrelated to vaccination. The postmortem report reveals the immediate cause of death as “cardiogenic shock/septicemic shock” due to “cardio-pulmonary disease”, the state government said. According to his family, he had been unwell before the jab. The second person to die was a 43-year-old man in Karnataka’s Bellary. The government said he had died of cardio-pulmonary failure. The postmortem is yet to be

done, the government said. Of the seven people hospitalized, three are from Delhi. Two persons have been discharged and one is under observation at Max Hospital. Two cases have been reported from Karnataka, one of the patients is still under observation. One person is under observation in Uttarakhand, at the All-India Institute of Medical Sciences in Rishikesh. Another person is hospitalized in Chhattisgarh’s Rajanandgaon. World Health Organisation defines AEFI or Adverse Events Following Immunisation as any untoward medi-

cal occurrence which follows immunisation and does not necessarily have a causal relationship with the usage of the vaccine. Of the 3,81,305 healthcare workers vaccinated so far, 1,48,266 were administered the vaccine on Monday. The drive took place across 25 states-- the corresponding figure on Sunday was six. Every state has its own schedule and target for each vaccination site. Most states target vaccinating 100 beneficiaries each day at each site. Roughly one crore health workers and two crore frontline workers will receive the vaccine initially.

Informing this in a press note, state immunization officer, Dr. Ritu Thurr said that all vaccinated healthcare workers will receive the subsequent second dose after 28 days, even as they will have to strictly follow COV1D-19

appropriate behaviours even after their vaccination. All the districts will have more sessions for the remaining healthcare workers in the coming days. The first phase of vaccination is reserved only for pre-registered healthcare workers as they are at the highest risk of infection and also to reduce transmission to patients when caring for them. All vaccination sites are entered in COWIN portal and all beneficiaries are verified with photo identity cards before receiving the vaccine.

Chatgate: Arnab’s WhatsApp chat shows leak of classified info NEP 2020: Centre to release NEW DELHI, JAN 18 (AGENCIES): Republic TV Editor-in-Chief Arnab Goswami was apparently privy to the Modi government’s plan to launch an air strike on Pakistan’s Balakot in retaliation for the Pulwama terror attack, three days before the Indian Air Force bombed the terrorist camp on 26 February 2019, report The Print. This is part of the purported WhatsApp conversations between Goswami and then Broadcast Audience Research Council chief executive Partho Dasgupta, that went viral Friday. The WhatsApp conversations are part of Mumbai Police’s charge sheet, submitted before a court, in connection with the case of alleged manipulation of Television Rating Points (TRPs) by news channels, including Republic TV and a few others. The purported

Arnab Goswami (File)

conversations, among other things, revealed that the Narendra Modi government had planned the air strike “in a way” that the people would be “elated”. In the purported chat, dated 23 February 2019, Goswami informed Dasgupta that “something big will happen”. When the latter asked if it was about “Dawood”, Arnab explained, “No sir Pakistan. Something major will be done this time.” “It’s good for big man in this season. He will sweep polls then,” replied

the then BARC chief, asking whether it will be “a strike” or “something bigger”. Goswami then responded, “Bigger than a normal strike. And also on the same time, something major on Kashmir. On Pakistan, the government is confident of striking in a way that people will be elated. Exact words used.” Arnab was apparently citing the information shared by a government functionary, but didn’t disclose whose “words” they were. ThePrint reached Goswami for comment but there was no response. ‘This attack we have won like crazy’: Soon after the Pulwama terror attack on 14 February 2019 in which 40 CRPF jawans were killed, Goswami had a chat with Dasgupta and they discussed how the news worked very well for the channel’s (Cont’d on p-5) TRPs.

Congress, NCP demand JPC probe

Congress and Nationalist Congress Party have asked the government to institute a JPC inquiry into the ‘Chatgate’ involving Arnab Goswami and Partho Dasgupta, contending that there was evidence that he was privy to the Balakot air strikes that were “planned” by the BJP regime purely with Lok Sabha elections in mind. Former I&B minister and Lok Sabha MP Manish Tewari, referring to the leaked chats, tweeted, “If what sections of media is reporting is correct, then it points towards a direct linkage between Balakot air strikes and 2019 general elections. Was national security milked for electoral purposes? Needs a JPC investigation.” Tagging defence minister Rajnath Singh, Congress veteran and former home

minister P Chidambaram tweeted, “Did a journalist (and his friend) know about the retaliatory strike on Balakot camp three days before the actual strike? If yes, what is the guarantee that their ‘source’ did not share the information with others as well, including spies or informers working for Pakistan? How did a ‘For Your Eyes Only’ decision find its way to the governmentsupporting journalist?” NCP chief spokesperson Mahesh Tapase said, “It is extremely shocking and disturbing to know how issues related to national security have been used to gain TRPs.” “The question also arises how Arnab was privy to such sensitive information. The Home Ministry has to identify the source and immediately take action,” he said.

fices, banks and financial institutions functioned almost normally. Congress leaders alleged that the ruling BJP workers, accompanied by “notorious goons”, attacked Biswas in Western Tripura’s Bishalgarh in Sepehijala district late Saturday evening. While the state party chief narrowly escaped, several party workers were injured, they said. Congress’ Tripura Vice President Tapas Dey said that the attack was carried out by a large number of BJP workers and goons in the presence of police and no one has been arrested as yet despite an FIR being lodged with the police on Saturday. Biswas, a veteran lawyer, later told the media that the “BJP goons” carried out the attack to murder him and badly damaged his car with iron rods and sticks besides injuring the driver.

“The BJP led government in Tripura is not only an undemocratic government, it also has barbaric governance. People should hold an all out protest against the BJP government,” he said. The ruling BJP and the opposition Communist Party of India-Marxist condemned the attack and demanded that the attackers be booked. BJP’s state chief spokesman Subrata Chakraborty demanded an impartial inquiry to unearth the truth. “We urge the police to take appropriate legal action against the attackers. The probe would reveal whether it is an attack or outcome of the Congress’ internal feud. The Congress also should not call the strike as it affects peace and progress. However, the people totally rejected the shutdown,” Chakraborty said.

New Delhi, Jan 18 (IANS): From Monday onwards, ‘Rakshita’ -- a bike ambulance developed indigenously -- will save lives of injured CRPF personnel deputed in remote and inhospitable areas like the Maoist-hit states or insurgency affected Northeast regions of the country. Carefully custom built to the needs of emergency evacuation, ‘Rakshita’ is built on a Royal Enfield Classic 350CC bike. It comes with a quick fit in and fit out casualty evacuation seat (CSE) that has customised design reclining, hand immobilizer and harness jacket, physiological parameter measuring equipment with monitoring capability and auto warning system for driver. Dashboard mounted LCD for measuring vital parameters, air splint medical and oxygen kit, saline and oxygen administration on the move, adjustable footrest, and hand and foot strap for safety are among the other features of ‘Rakshita’. These equipment make ‘Rakshita’ an on the spot medical care and injured transport system which is

safe. He, therefore, appealed to the public not to make negative comments about the vaccine without valid scientific proof. “Instead of creating suspicion and panic in people’s mind with negative comments, any individual could come up with positive suggestions regarding the vaccination drive,” he said. The chief minister also maintained that the vaccination programme would cover all the population in phase manner and appealed to the public to have patience while waiting for their turns. On the other hand, the state witnessed the lowest number of COVID-19 cases, by recording 11 cases on Monday. This was the lowest count of daily cases recorded since August 1, 2020. As the coronavirus cases were taking a surge on a daily basis, the people infected with this highly contagious viral disease has reached 28,867 in the state.

Agartala, Jan 18 (IANS): The 12-hour shutdown called by the opposition Congress in Tripura on Monday to protest against the alleged attack on the state’s party president Pijush Biswas by “BJP goons”, evoked a partial response. Police officials said that no major untoward incident was reported from anywhere in the state except a clash between the Congress and the ruling BJP supporters in western Tripura’s Teliamura in Khowai district. Police arrested around 300 bandh supporters for picketing in different places across eight districts. Shops, markets and business establishments remained open in many areas. Most passenger vehicles plied as usual while the Northeast Frontier Railways operated most of its passenger and goods trains in Tripura. Government of-

Security personnel carry out demonstration after CRPF and DRDO launched specially developed bike, ‘Rakshita’, ambulance, in New Delhi, Monday. (PTI) not just indigenous and cost effective, but can also reach inaccessible or remote locations by traversing unmotorable roads, narrow streets, congested or unpaved roads that are otherwise inaccessible by the conventional four wheeled ambulances, CRPF Deputy Inspector General M. Dhinakaran told IANS. The bike ambulance is developed by Defence Research and Development Organisation’s (DRDO) Nuclear Medicine and Allied Sciences (INMAS) in col-

laboration with Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) for golden-hour lifesaving aid and evacuation. Similar 21 ‘Rakshita’ bike ambulances were inducted into the CRPF -- a 3.5 lakh strong force, on Monday. These bike ambulances were launched at the CRPF Headquarters here in presence of CRPF Director General A.P. Maheshwari and A.K. Singh, DS & DG (LS), DRDO. Launched by the CRPF and INMAS, the bike ambulance will be used

for evacuation of injured personnel of the Central Armed Police Force, which is mandated to ensure internal security in the country. “In its endeavour to provide an impregnable internal security to the nation, CRPF is actively deployed across the country. Most of these deployments are in remote and inhospitable areas like LWE affected areas and Northeast where evacuation of sick or battle injured personnel becomes a challenge.

“Many times, late evacuation results in loss of precious lives of CRPF bravehearts. To mitigate this, in 2018 CRPF approached INMAS with the idea of developing an ambulance on motor bikes which is frequently used by CRPF for patrolling in these theaters,” Dhinakar said. The official said INMAS promptly put up a team of scientists and experts to make the idea a reality. “The team developed a prototype and improved it with the feedback from CRPF personnel deployed in disturbed areas.” Director General CRPF expressed his gratitude to team INMAS for their unrelenting efforts put in developing the bike ambulance and commended their tireless dedication and professional efficiency. While expressing his deepest gratitude to the DG CRPF for working together, giving regular inputs throughout the journey of the development of this lifesaving bike and entrusting INMAS with this innovation, A.K. Singh promised to cooperate perpetually with CRPF for further improvements in ‘Rakshita’.

Want early end to impasse: Govt on farm laws Says but involvement of ‘other ideologies’ delaying resolution

NEW DELHI, JAN 18 (PTI): A day before the crucial tenth round of talks with representatives of protesting farmers on controversial new farm laws, the Centre on Monday said both sides want to resolve the longcontinuing stalemate at the earliest but it was getting delayed due to involvement of people of other ideologies. Asserting that the new farm laws are in the interest of the farming community, the government said obstacles do come whenever good things or measures are taken and it is taking longer to resolve the issue as farmers’ leaders want a solution their own way. The tenth round of talks between the Centre and 41 protesting farmers’ unions is scheduled for Tuesday at 12 noon at Vigyan Bhawan in the heart of the national capital. Separately, a Supreme Court-appointed panel to resolve the crisis is also scheduled to hold its first meeting on Tuesday.

Farmers during their ongoing protest against new farm laws, at Singhu Border in New Delhi, Monday. (PTI)

The previous rounds of talks between the government and farmers have failed to reach any concrete results, as protesting unions have stuck to their main demand for repealing the new

laws, but the government has refused to do so. Speaking to PTI, Minister of State for Agriculture Parshottam Rupala said: “It is different when farmers talk to us directly. When leaders

get involved, then it becomes difficult. There could have been early solution had the discussions were held with farmers directly.” Since people of different ideologies have entered

into the protest, they want a solution in their own way, he said. “Both sides want a solution, but they have different points of view and hence it is taking more time. But a definite solution will emerge,” he noted. Thousands of farmers, especially from Punjab, Haryana and parts of Uttar Pradesh, are protesting for nearly two-months at various Delhi borders against the three farm laws enacted by the central government in September 2020. Separately, Union Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar, while addressing a virtual event, reiterated that the three farm laws will be beneficial for farmers. “These laws were expected earlier but the previous government could not implement because of pressure. It was the Modi government that took a bold step and brought these laws passed in Parliament... Whenever a good thing happens, there are obstacles,” Tomar said.

5 2 bogies of train Clash in Kutch during rally for derail in Lucknow Ram temple donation; 3 injured LU C K N OW, J A N 1 8 (PTI): Two bogies of a passenger train on its way from Amritsar to Jaynagar in Bihar derailed in Lucknow on Monday morning, a railway official said. No casualties were reported. The 4674 Shahid Express left for its onward journey shortly after the incident, Senior Divisional Commercial Manager Jagtosh Shukla said. The incident took place around 8 am when the train left platform no. 1 at the Charbagh railway station and two of its bogies derailed, DRM Northern Railway, Sanjay Tripathi said. Among the derailed bogies, one was an AC three tier and another sleeper, and a total of 130 passengers were travelling in them, the DRM said. The passengers of the derailed bogies were shifted to other compartments and the train left for onwards journey around 10.25 am, DRM said. A three-member inquiry committee has been constituted to look into the matter and it has been asked to submit its report in seven days, he said.

GANDHIDHAM (GUJ), JAN 18 (PTI): Three persons have been injured in a clash between members of two communities in Gujarat’s Kutch district during a rally for collection of funds for the construction of Ram temple in Ayodhya, police said on Monday. After the incident took place on Sunday evening, the body of a man was found about 200 metres from the clash site in Kidana village, and the police are trying to ascertain if he was killed as part of that violence, Kutch (East) Superintendent of Police Mayur Patil said. Two groups clashed and started throwing stones at each other in the village on Sunday evening when a procession was being taken out for the collection of funds for the construction of the Ram temple at Ayodhya in Uttar Pradesh, an official from Gandhidham (B-Division) police station said. Some vehicles were also set afire by rioters, he

said.

The police lobbed teargas shells to bring the situation under control, he said. Three persons were injured in the incident and were admitted in a hospital, the official said. A man was killed with sharp weapons after a group attacked an autorickshaw on the village outskirts, and the police are trying to ascertain if he was killed as part of the clash, Superintendent of Police Mayur Patil said. “We have lodged a case of murder after the man was killed by some unidentified persons on the village outskirts, some 200 metres away from the place where the clash broke out. We are trying to find out who killed him and why,” Patil said. The victim, hailing from Jharkhand, was returning from work in an auto-rickshaw when a group of unidentified persons carryinglathis (wooden sticks) attacked the vehicle, he said.

state party president Subrata Bakshi to approve my name from this seat,” Banerjee said. Bakshi, who was on the podium, swiftly accepted the request. Nandigram was the scene of massive public protest against “forcible” land acquisition by the then Left Front government for creation of a special economic zone. The protracted and often bloody protests added to Banerjee and her party’s political heft and catapulted the TMC to power in 2011, marking the end of the Left Front rule of 34 years.

Adhikari is considered the face face of the movement in Nandigram, some 130 km south-west of Kolkata. After switching over to ther BJP, Adhikari has often accused Banerjee of having forgotten the people of the area who helped her gain power in the state. Banerjee is at present the MLA from Bhawanipore in south Kolkata. “If possible, I will contest from both Bhawanipore and Nandigram. In case I am unable to contest from Bhawanipore, someone else will,” she said. Baner jee said she

New Delhi, Jan 18 (IANS): The Centre said on Monday that outbreak of Avian Influenza has been confirmed in 5 states for poultry birds and in 9 states for crows/migratory/wild birds till date. As per the statement by the Union Ministry of Animal Husbandry, Fisheries and Dairies, Avian Influenza has been confirmed in samples of dead heron from Tis Hazari, New Delhi and in crows from Red Fort, and an advisory in this regard has been issued to the Delhi government for taking necessary action. In Maharashtra, RRTs has been deployed and culling of poultry birds is underway in all the affected epicentres. NANDIGRAM/ KOLKATA (WB), JAN 18 (PTI): Mamata Banerjee on Monday declared she will contest the upcoming assembly election from Nandigram, as she took her battle for West Bengal to the home turf of poitical heavyweight Suvendu Adhikari, who recently quit the TMC and joined the BJP. That Banerjee chose Nandigram to make the big announcement reflects the TMC supremo’s determination to take the BJP, which has launched a spirited campaign to unseat her after a decade-long stint in power, head on. Addressing a rally here, Banerjee said she is not worried about those joining rival parties as they were hardly around when the TMC was formed. Banerjee said these leaders left the ruling party to protect the money “they have looted” in the last few years. “I have always started my campaign for the assembly polls from Nandigram. It is a lucky place for me. So this time I feel that I should contest the assembly polls from here. I request our

“Doval met me before taking off for Srinagar. They will push this through,” he added. ‘Case should be registered against Goswami’: Some security experts said the purported conversations indicated national security had been compromised. “We do not know yet how much did he (Arnab Goswami) know about this sensitive operation. This is absolutely a compromise of national security. He is close to the ruling establishment and someone within the system must have leaked it. Else, how could he know about such a sensitive operation which only a few people within the government were aware of ?” said Jayadeva Ranade, a former Indian intelligence officer and China expert. “That man is a national security risk. The government should tighten the agencies now and needs a thorough investigation. This is symptomatic of laxity and the weaknesses in the system and needs to be plugged,” he added. R.K. Yadav, a former RAW officer, said this called for an investigation. “Anyone in the system could have given it to him. This should be seriously investigated,” he said.

to the Valley accordingly. “Sushma is going to OIC on 2 March. That means nothing till then. Expectation is between then and 15th March. As of now either way I would discourage you from going to Kashmir on those dates. If inevitable, let me know. Will arrange some security,” Goswami purportedly said. On 27 February 2019, Dasgupta asked Goswami “was yesterday’s air strike the ‘big one’ you spoke about? Or something more coming”? Goswami then replied, “More to come”. He further added, “Broken: Pak planes have crossed loc. One pak f 16 crashes. One a Indian also.” Dasgupta then suggested, “You should embed some reporters. Would be a coup. Like CNN. In Iraq.” In other chats, Goswami told Dasgupta how Republic TV was on top of the J&K story. In a conversation later in the day, Goswami said, “Big yesterday because my first burst of reporters landing in Srinagar were from Bharat. Last night I had the biggest story first. Today I was called by NSA and asked how I got the news. Everyone in NSA and PMO is hooked to Bharat.”

(From p-1) On 14 February at 4.19 pm, soon after the attack, Goswami texted Dasgupta how Republic TV was 20 minutes ahead on the biggest terrorist attack of the year in Kashmir as the “only channel with ground presence”. An hour later, Dasgupta reverted, “Modi happened yesterday,” to which Goswami said, “Have planned some build-up thing after we spoke. Idea to gain massive spike. So used his speech yesterday and pushed it by a bit.” Goswami added, “This attack we have won like crazy”. “Doing lots and lots and lots of stuff after we spoke.” Goswami on ‘major development’: The purported conversations also show Goswami dissuading Dasgupta from visiting Kashmir around March because of a “major development” that was awaited. The Republic TV Editor told Dasgupta that since the then external affairs minister Sushma Swaraj was going for the OIC (Organisation of Islamic Cooperation) conference in Abu Dhabi on 2 March, it will not happen then, but is expected soon after, so he should plan his travel

OPINiON/EDITORIAL

Nagaland Post Vol. XXxI NO. 43 Dimapur, TUESDAY, JANUARY 19, 2021

A disappointing episode

N

othing could be more damning for Nagaland Lok Ayukta Justice Uma Nath Singh when he was issued an ultimatum by the Supreme Court to step down from his position given the spate of controversies the former high court chief justice has been embroiled in. The government of Nagaland, had in its petition for removal of the Lok Ayukta , listed several instances of Justice Uma Nath Singh making “unjust and arbitrary” personal demands on the state government. The apex court took cognisance of the petition filed by the Nagaland AG that Justice Singh has continued to work online from Delhi even though the chief secretary did not approve of this. Singh had written a letter to the state government in May stating that he would work online from Delhi. However when he was informed personally that such a request couldn’t be accepted as it would need an amendment to the statute, the Lok Ayukta allegedly “engineered” a letter from the state chief secretary’s office to that effect without the incumbent’s knowledge on June 6. Justice Singh’s advocate responded that he was working in Delhi because of the outbreak of Covid-19. However, the apex court bench headed by Chief Justice of India (CJI) SA Bobde wondered how the Lok Ayukta of Nagaland would discharge his duties while sitting in Delhi. The court said he was “demeaning” himself and the office and suggested that it was better to give up the post. The Nagaland AG also mentioned that before joining the Meghalaya high court, Justice Singh was a judge in the Allahabad high court. He was transferred to Allahabad from the Punjab and Haryana high court after repeated conflicts between him and the members of that High Court Bar Association. The report also said that Justice Singh demanded that the commissioner of police be present at the airport to receive and see him off every time, besides seeking army deployment for his protection. It was reported that Justice Singh had also demanded the chief minister’s old bungalow as his residence and wanted his photograph to be displayed on government websites along with that of the governor and state chief minister. According to a Bar and Bench report, the state AG Balagopal also told the court that Justice Singh had asked a high ranking police office at Dimapur to buy two pairs of shoes and send them to his residence at Kohima. It was reported that Justice Singh had told the police office “to take pictures of the shoes and send them by WhatsApp for the Lokayukta’s approval.” The state government, in its plea, has urged the apex court to pass appropriate direction in exercise of its power under Article 142 of the Constitution “to ensure that the institutional integrity of the post of Nagaland Lokayukta and the spirit” of the Nagaland Lokayukta Act, 2017 “are preserved”. The appointment of Justice Uma Nath Singh in February 2019 as Nagaland Lok Ayukta was widely hailed by cross sections of society. However, a few months into his assignment, Justice Singh as Lok Ayukta appeared to be at war with the state government rather than corruption. It is hoped that the Supreme Court will accept Justice Singh’s earlier request to replace him and ensure that another senior judge is appointed as Lok Ayukta to put the office back on track.

“It Is the Lord!”

Thomas answered and said to Him, “My Lord and my God!” —John 20:28 “Jesus said to her, ‘Give Me a drink’ ” (John 4:7). How many of us are expecting Jesus Christ to quench our thirst when we should be satisfying Him! We should be pouring out our lives, investing our total beings, not drawing on Him to satisfy us. “You shall be witnesses to Me…” (Acts 1:8). That means lives of pure, uncompromising, and unrestrained devotion to the Lord Jesus, which will be satisfying to Him wherever He may send us. Beware of anything that competes with your loyalty to Jesus Christ. The greatest competitor of true devotion to Jesus is the service we do for Him. It is easier to serve than to pour out our lives completely for Him. The goal of the call of God is His satisfaction, not simply that we should do something forHim. We are not sent to do battle for God, but to be used by God in His battles. Are we more devoted to service than we are to Jesus Christ Himself?

Life’s most persistent and urgent question is, ‘What are you doing for others?’ ~ Martin Luther King, Jr.

B

y the time you read this lakhs of chickens will have died of Avian Flu. Some will have died naturally. Others will have been beaten to death or strangled. How many do you think will be buried or burnt ? Very few. Most of them will land on your plate, sold at reduced prices by the poultries. So what, you say. The newspapers have repeatedly told you that bird flu makes no difference to the quality of chicken you eat and, as long as you cook it, you will come to no harm. This is utter rubbish and it is being doled out by two interested parties: the poultry industry themselves, so that they do not go completely bankrupt and you continue to buy the diseased dead birds. The second is the government itself : the Animal Husbandry Ministries, who are solely invented to see that India has more poultries, more slaughterhouses. The more animals are eaten, the more successful the Ministry is. Their mandate is NOT sick people. Their mandate is to see that people keep buying chickens, diseased or not. The mandate for looking after sick people belongs to the Ministry of Health. And never the twain shall

meet. Every article will tell you that no humans have ever had Avian Flu. And that it can’t spread from bird to human. This is not true. If Avian Flu was not zoonotic why are the birds being killed under the Infectious and Contagious Diseases Prevention Act 2009. The word zoonotic means a disease that can be transmitted to a human by an animal. Do you think any government cares when a bird suffers. The only time they wake up is when they know that the disease of the bird can be transmitted to a human. It was first detected in 18 humans in 1997 working in a live bird market in Hong Kong (again Chinese). The strain was identified as H5N1- the same strain that is in India now - with a high mortality rate. Six of the 18 humans died. Bird Flu has spread across the country. Every single state has it and lakhs are being killed from Himachal Pradesh to Kerala. You, who cower in fear of COVID – this is also a viral flu disease : avian influenza. The Influenza Type A virus has several strains. When it first came to India it was H1N1. Fourteen years later this massive outbreak is from the mutated virus now called H5N1 and H8N1.

Nagaland Post, Dimapur TUESDAY, JANUARY 19, 2021

Protect yourself Just as syphilis, in every language, means the disease of foreigners, every government believes that avian flu comes from migratory birds from a different country, who spread it as their faeces drop from the air and straight into the poultries. That country may never have had bird flu, but their birds have developed it as they fly towards India ?? I find it far more likely that the poultries give it to the migratory birds, who have no resistance and so they die. According to the US Center of Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), six countries are considered the permanent centres for H5N1 virus in poultry. We top the list followed by China, Bangladesh, Vietnam, Indonesia and Egypt. In each of these countries you have to see the horrific conditions that chickens are normally kept in to understand why they fall prey so quickly to Avian Flu.

In India the poultries are like hells on earth. The chickens are kept in filthy small cages unable to move, with sliced off beaks and toes to prevent them from picking each other’s feathers. They are full of sores. Most of them have had rounds of other common diseases: Encephalomyelitis, Chicken Anaemia Virus Infection, Chlamydiosis, Infectious Bronchitis, Infectious Bursal Disease, Infectious Coryza, Infectious Laryngotracheitis, tick fever or Spirochaetosis, Avian Leucosis. They have per manent diarrhoea, some have bloody diarrhoea from a parasite called coccidia. Most of them cannot walk without extreme difficulty and many have rickets. They have warts and a thick discharge from their eyes, they have pus filled abscesses on their necks and feet. Many of them have diabetes, and a large number have tuberculosis and they can hardly

breathe in the damp poisonous air that pervades the poultry. They inhale their own dried faeces. They have a deficiency of Vitamin A and manganese, which makes them lame with swollen eyes. They cough and sneeze. They have round worms and tape worms, lice and fleas, ticks and mites. They live on a diet of antibiotics and dried food with sawdust in it. They die often of heart attacks. Every now and then they are wiped out by the contagious fowl pox, fowl cholera or Ranikhet disease. How could you think that these diseased unhappy creatures would not get Avian flu ? How does it spread to humans ? From those people who work in poultries – which is how COVID started. And those who eat poultry products. The WHO sta r ted by saying that there is no evidence that the virus can spread through food – provided it is cooked at more than 60 degree Celsius. What they have neglected to say is that the chicken is handled by you long before it is cooked. You buy the raw chicken from an open street vendor, touch it with your hands, put it into your

fridge, put it in various utensils, which are not washed at boiling temperatures but with ordinary tap water. You cut it and splice it and then cook it. By then the virus is in a hundred places and you could have become a carrier. Even WHO has now diluted its own message and warns that these new mutants viruses could turn into another pandemic. H5N1 has already proven to be very dangerous to humans. When the disease spreads to humans, it affects the respiratory tract illness, and its symptom include Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome, similar to one caused by Covid-19.You will start with fever, cough and a sore throat. You can have abdominal pain and diarrhoea. All these symptoms are similar to Covid. There have been no tests for it in India. The government labs are now rolling out a test to see whether you have COVID or avian flu. There is no vaccine or treatment. Protect yourself. Don’t eat chicken or eggs. Close down the illegal street vendors. I have done that in my constituency. To join the animal welfare movement contact gandhim@nic.in, www.peopleforanimalsindia.org

Courageous Conservatives

n February 4, 2020, in his third State of the Union (SOTU) address, which turned out to be his last, President Donald Trump was joined by two very special guests, Robin Schneider and her two years old daughter Ellie Schneider. Born at just 21 weeks and 6 days, Ellie Schneider becomes one of the earliest premature babies ever to survive in modern history. It was the wonder of modern medical sciences, miracle from God and the sacrifice and courage of a loving mom who decided not to abort her unborn child and instead choose to do everything she can to give the child the right to live that had helped saved the life of a precious girl from an apparent pre-mature death. This moving story of Robin and Ellie Schneider epitomized the main theme of Trump’s Presidency where he had joined conservatives pro-life movement not just in America but around the globe in defending LIFE as a gift from God and reminding all that government or any human institutions has no right to destroy life at any stage of life, from the moment of conception. The story of Ellie Schneider is a success story of a pro-life movement that is defending life for decades against the dreadful force/elements which seeks to destroy it under the pretext of “choice”. And she and her mother could able to make it to the SOTU 2020 because the president values life. The president did not choose “Roe v. Wade” activists/leaders or “Black Lives Matter” rioters and honor them in his SOTU speech in order to gain undue political mileage out of it. Instead by choosing Robin and Ellie Schneider, he had testified to America and to the world his love for life and his commitment to protect the same at any cost and under any given political circumstances. But the story of Ellie is also a tragic reminder about the millions of unborn babies/ lives who were not fortunate enough like her as they had to face unwanted abortion out of “choice” or forced to end their lives because of failing to avail the medical facilities thereby denying their right to live. This is a reminder of the massive challenges ahead for the conservatives in their mission to save and promote lives. If there is one defining characteristic of Donald Trump’s presidency and the bitter American divide that ensued during his four years reign, then it is that he and his fellow conservatives stand on the side that believes that all lives, including black and unborn, matters, and that

life is created by God and that it cannot be defined and determined by government. Donald Trump will be remembered by posterity as the most pro-life, pro-people, pro-religious liberty and anti-establishment/elites president in modern history of America. It was an unprecedented opportunity for the president to appoint three conservatives Justices, in his four years reign, to the Supreme Court of the United States (SCOTUS) that had helped him pushed forward the conservatives’ values in the country. One immediate effect of the conservatives’ majority SCOTUS was the overturning of the New York Governor Andrew Cuomo’s religious restriction in November 2020. In a landmark ruling on the Roman Catholic Diocese Of Brooklyn, New York Vs Andrew M. Cuomo, Governor Of New York, the SCOTUS invalidated Cuomo and his Democrats’ anti-religious liberty agenda to trampled citizens’ right to worship on the pretext of containing the spread of Covid-19 virus, and ensured that the ruling will be in favor of religious liberty for all and not on the side that seek to empower government to wield unlimited powers against its citizens. Justice Neil Gorsuch, one of the three SCOTUS’ Justices appointed by Donald Trump, in his powerful concurring on the ruling affirmed, “Government is not free to disregard the First Amend¬ment in times of crisis”. This concurring is indeed to protect the right of the citizens from any possible government interference even in times of “crisis”. For history had clearly demonstrated that “crisis” serves as a perfect opportunity for any government to curbs the rights of the citizens and used those occasion of “crisis” simply to advance their vested political agendas. In the past, the Nazi Germany had done the same when they had used the burning of German parliament building as perfect opportunity to consolidate its grip of power. In the aftermath of the burning of the parliament building, the Nazi government had declared national emergency and curbs all the civil, political and religious rights that its citizens enjoys in the country. And there is no guarantee that the today’s governments of the world would not exploit the Covid-19 crisis to create a political mechanism to keep people within its control system. The Gorsuch’s concurring, though, had rest assured that the First Amendment, which empowers citizens the right to freedom of religion, freedom of speech and freedom of assembly, cannot

be disregarded nor suspended under any given circumstances or crisis. It’s worth mentioning here that Donald Trump became the first US President to hold a conference on Religious Liberty at United Nations in September 2019. This had recognized religious freedom as the very basic and essential right of every human being. One can only hope that the SCOTUS’ ruling last November and Donald Trump’s initiative at UN will help promote religious liberty not only in America but all through out the world, and that the world community will address the serious crisis prevailing in many parts of the world where religious minorities are persecuted and their right to freedom of religion are denied, in many cases by state establishment itself. The last SCOTUS’ ruling on religious liberty is a powerful testimony that the eventful Donald Trump’s presidency will impact for many generations to come. By appointing an unprecedented three Conservatives Justices to the SCOTUS who are expected to interpret Constitution as it is written and defend life and religious freedom, he had cemented his legacy as the Champion of Life and Religious Liberty, reminding all that government has no right to dictate its citizens on what kind of religion to follow or regulate the way people worship. Conservatives’ pro-life movement is not centered on the personality of Donald Trump. He is just part of the movement. The conservatives supported Donald Trump because he is pro-life. But more than that, the conservatives are pro-life, and that’s why they supported him. Nevertheless his presence in White House for last four eventful years had made the movement stronger. And the momentum that he had built for the conservatives will impact for many generations to come. Decades from now, Ellie Schneider and her generation, who survived similar challenges like her, will be praising God, and thanking Donald Trump and his fellow conservatives’ pro-life champions because of whose efforts they were alive. But until the time Ellie and her generation will be mature and conscious enough to learn to appreciate and be thankful to all those who were responsible for bringing them into this world alive, conservatives around the globe has mounting task ahead: many lives yet to save and need to inspire people to join the movement in defending life and promoting freedom of religion for all. Making privacy a mainstream debate

I

n the wee hours of a rather cold Delhi winter morning, I received a phone call from my rather anxious 83-year-old uncle. He asked, “What should I do? I just accepted the new WhatsApp terms without reading too much into it. How can I withdraw it now? WhatsApp has been my only means to communicate with my kids in US. What do I do if they shift to Telegram? What happens to my data on WhatsApp?” This was not an isolated conversation, indicating that we are at a potentially seminal moment of consumer understanding of privacy and what it entails. Since its inception, WhatsApp has claimed security and privacy as its core DNA. With its new “takeit-or-leave-it” policy, Whatsapp essentially threatened users of deleting their accounts, unless they accept the new terms before May. The earlier deadline was February 8, but was deferred. Consumers are now recognising that there is a price attached to the service. Since 2016, WhatsApp has been sharing data with Facebook, with the caveat that users could opt out by manually editing their settings within 30 days. So, this new policy is not about WhatsApp sharing more data with Facebook than it already did until now. It is, rather, about Facebook leveraging user data and engagement on WhatsApp to build a platform where businesses can start sharing and selling products and services to WhatsApp users. None of this is a surprise. Facebook’s acquisition was always with an intent to monetise WhatsApp for its data. WhatsApp, with its new “takeit-or leave-it” privacy policy, may not have anticipated the severe consumer backlash against it. Consumers often miss reading the rather small fine print of the terms of the services. However, the fact that the new terms are mandatory made all the difference. Telegram and Signal are the two platforms that consumers are embracing, with installs flying off the charts for both of them. Telegram offers extensive features such as larger

groups, heavy files, and unlimited cloud storage along with end-to-end encrypted secret chats. Signal, on the other hand, is a relatively new name for most consumers in India. It offers a simple UX and some basic features with default end-to-end encryption. As network effects shape the future of messaging and communications apps, the question of which of the platforms emerges as a sustainable alternative needs to be seen. If you are still on the fence, and contemplating what to do next if you are on WhatsApp, here is my answer. Over the short-term, nothing much has changed. WhatsApp remains secure. WhatsApp remains end-to-end encrypted. And it will continue to share data as it has been doing all along. However, all of this is immaterial if users keep shifting to other apps before May. You need to be on the same platform where most of your peers, business partners, and most importantly, your loved ones are. If you take a long-term view, the future will never be the same from here on for WhatsApp. The messaging service has now moved into a different trajectory — one focused on monetisation. It will now find it tough to regain or retain user trust. While messages remain secure and encrypted, as Facebook seeks to build tighter cross-platform integration across its ecosystem, the user data on WhatsApp could fall prey to it through data-sharing, or, for instance, targeted and precise advertising. There is no assurance that there will not be any further changes to the terms of use going forward. It all boils down to whether one is WhatsApp’s consumer or rather its product offering. The conversation around WhatsApp policy has moved beyond just those engaged in the world of tech policy and privacy. When consumers, like my 83-year-old uncle, seek to grasp and work out the issues around what privacy means and entails, you know change is in the air. Implementation of ‘No work, No pay’

Sir,

The recent directives by the principal director of education regarding the withholding of the salary for absentee employees have garnered the attention of almost every Naga. When thousands of dedicated employees are working incessantly to earn a living, some dishonest employees sit idly at home and build mansions with the hard earned money of someone else. The gist here is, isn’t it the duty of every government employee to work and get salary? Is it not the job of every sensible human being to work and earn an honest living? The private company employees work round the clock with almost no holidays but the huge gap in the salaries of a government employee and the private employee makes one question the fairness of the government. Therefore, as a respect to those who honestly earn a living with their own hard work, I urge the govt to implement the “No work, No pay” policy in every governmental department of Nagaland. Bongmei Phom, Dimapur

houses to follow when reporting in cases of suicide. Following weeks of exhaustive arguments, the bench had on November 6 last year reserved its verdict on a bunch of PILs seeking that the press, particularly TV news channels, be restrained in their reportage on the death Rajput. The PILs, filed through senior counsel Aspi Chinoy, by activists, private citizens, and a group of retired police officers, had also sought that TV news channels be stopped from conducting a media trial into the case. During the arguments, the Union government’s counsel, Additional Solicitor General Anil Singh, had said there already existed adequate statutory as well as self-regulatory mechanism for the media, including TV news channels, to follow while printing or broadcasting any news item.

Smoking can’t protect against Covid: Experts

NEW DELHI, JAN 18 (AGENCIES): Health experts have countered a panIndia CSIR serosurvey that said smokers were found to have lower seroprevalence, indicating that they are at lesser risk of contracting Covid-19. The survey, published Sunday, was conducted using samples from 10,427 adult individuals working in the CSIR’s (Council of Scientific and Industrial Research) laboratories or institutions, and their family members, based on voluntary participation, to assess the presence of antibodies in them. It claimed that it is the first evidence from the general population, which indicated that smoking might be protective against Covid. “Our finding that smokers are less likely to be seropositive is the first report from the general population and part of growing evidence that despite Covid-19 being a respiratory disease, smoking may be protective,” the study said. But doctors and experts that ThePrint spoke to said that smoking cannot protect against Covid as it reduces the immune response of the body, which in turn makes antibodies disappear faster — which is why

seroprevalence in smokers may be lower. Experts also said the serosurvey doesn’t establish a cause and effect association. The CSIR serosurvey contradicted the Union Health Ministry’s 2020 document that stated smokers are likely to be more vulner-

able to the Covid infection due to increased touching between fingers and lips, which augments transmissibility. Doctors, who have been treating Covid patients, said that susceptibility of the disease was found to be higher in smokers. “We have not found

such evidence in our hospital of smokers having any protection from Covid as this serosurvey suggests. But we have seen that smokers have higher susceptibility to Covid infection. This is because their immune system is compromised and their lungs are already affected by smoking,” said Dr B.L. Sherwal, medical director, at Delhi-government run Rajiv Gandhi Superspeciality Hospital “Seroprevalence may have been lower because antibodies may disappear due to slow immune response among smokers.” Health experts also echoed similar sentiments.

The metro network in Ahmedabad and Surat will further strengthen the connectivity in the two major business centres of the country, Modi said, adding the government is developing an integrated urban transport system. The difference between the approach of his government and the previous governments is the (pace of) expansion of the metro rail network across the country, he said. “Before 2014, only 225 km of metro line became operational in 10-12 yrs. In the last six years, over 450 km of metro network became operational,” Modi said. The Ahmedabad and

Surat metro projects are expected to provide an environment friendly Mass Rapid Transit System to these cities. Modi said the metro projects are designed keeping in mind both present as well as future needs. The Ahmedabad Metro Rail Project Phase-II is 28.25 km long with two corridors. While corridor-1 is 22.8 km long and is from Motera Stadium to Mahatma Mandir, corridor-2 is 5.4 km long and is from GNLU to GIFT-City. The total completion cost of the Phase-II project is Rs 5,384 crore, an official said. Modi inaugurated the 6.5 km stretch of Phase-1 in March 2019. The Surat Metro Rail Project is 40.35 km long and comprises two corridors. While corridor-1 is 21.61 km long and is from Sarthana to Dream City. Corridor-2 is 18.74 km long and is from Bhesan to Saroli. The completion cost of the project Rs 12,020 crore.

MUMBAI, JAN 18 (PTI): The Bombay High Court on Monday asked media houses to exercise restraint when reporting on suicide cases, saying “media trial leads to interference and obstruction to administration of justice”. A bench of Chief Justice Dipankar Datta and Justice G S Kulkarni said some reportage by Republic TV and Times Now in the aftermath of the death of actor Sushant Singh Rajput were “contemptuous”. The bench further said that it had, however, decided against taking any action against the channels. The HC said such reportage by any media organisation, that obstructs an ongoing investigation or administration of justice in a case, will amount to contempt of court. “Media trial leads to interference and obstruction to administration of justice and violates programme code under the Cable TV Network Regulation Act,” it observed. “Any reportage has to be in accordance with the norms of journalistic standards and ethics, else media houses stand to face contempt action,” it said. The HC also issued a slew of guidelines for media

AHMEDABAD, JAN 18 (PTI): Work is in progress on over 1,000 km long metro rail network in 27 cities in India, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Monday. He was speaking after performing the ground breaking ceremony of the Ahmedabad Metro Rail Project Phase-II and Surat Metro Rail Project via video conferencing. “There was a time when there was no modern thinking and policy on metro in our country. The result was that there was a different (type of) metro in each city,” Modi said. There was no uniformity then on the metro trains which started in different cities. There was no integration of metro with other modes of transport back then,” he said. Now, an integrated approach has been brought in so that various modes of transport, such bus and trains, complement each other rather than running independently, he added. Both the metro projects in Gujarat would come up at an estimated cost of around Rs 17,000 crore, Modi said.

NAVSARI, JAN 18 (PTI): Three children and two adults have drowned after their boat capsized in a lake in Gujarat’s Navsari district when a large number of tourists tried to get on to the vessel while some others were disembarking, police said on Monday. Nearly 15 others were injured in the melee caused by tourists getting in and out of the boat in a rush on Sunday evening, and official from Chikhli police station said. The incident took place in a lake at Soldhara Eco Point, a tourist spot in Chikhli taluka of Navsari, he said. “Due to the rush of tourists, the boat capsized when people tried to get on to it at the same time when others were disembarking,” he said. Later, fire department personnel launched a rescue operation and fished out five bodies till late night, he said. The deceased included a 30-year-old woman, her two children aged 1.5 and 10 years, another six-yearold child and a 28-year-old man, he said.

NEW DELHI, JAN 18 (PTI): The newly inducted Rafale fighter aircraft will feature in India’s Republic Day parade on January 26 and culminate the flypast by carrying out the ‘Vertical Charlie’ formation, the Indian Air Force (IAF) said on Monday. In the ‘Vertical Charlie’ formation, the aircraft flies at low altitude, pulls up vertically and conducts rolls before stabilising at higher altitude. “The flypast will culminate with a single Rafale aircraft carrying out a ‘Vertical Charlie’ formation,” IAF spokesperson Wing Commander Indranil Nandi said at a press conference here. In a major boost to India’s air power capability, five French-made multirole Rafale fighter jets were inducted into the IAF on September 10 last year. A total of 38 IAF aircraft and four planes of the Indian Army will participate in the flypast on January 26, Nandi said. As is traditionally the case, the spokesperson said, the flypast will be divided into two blocks – the first is planned along with the parade from 1004 hours to

Israeli jets target Hamas sites in Gaza T E L AV I V, J A N 1 8 (IANS): The Israeli military said on Monday that its warplanes struck sites belonging to the Hamas in the Gaza Strip after two rockets were fired from the besieged Palestinian enclave. An Israeli military spokesperson said in a statement that the jets struck Hamas military targets, including a tunnels, reports Xinhua news agency. The two rockets fired earlier from the Gaza Strip fell in the sea before reaching Israel, according to the Israeli military. There were no reports of injuries on both sides. It was not immediately clear which group in Gaza fired the rockets but the spokesperson said that Israel considers Hamas “responsible for all events transpiring in the Gaza Strip and emanating from it”. Hamas “will bear the consequences for terror activity against Israeli civilians”, the Israeli military warned. The army said it was “ready to continue operating as necessary against attempts to harm Israeli civilians or sovereignty”.

Managers of the operation were detained after they failed to report the accident for more than a day. The mine in Qixia, a jurisdiction under the city of Yantai in Shandong province, had been under construction at the time of the blast, which occurred January 10. More than 300 workers are seeking to clear obstructions while drilling a new shaft to reach the chambers where the workers were trapped and expel dangerous fumes. “Keep on with the rescue efforts. We have hope,

thank you,” read the note, written in pencil on notebook paper and posted on Xinhua’s official website. China’s mining industry has a reputation for skirting safety requirements amid massive demand for coal and precious minerals, although increased supervision has reduced the frequency of accidents that used to claim an average of 5,000 miners per year. Two accidents in the southwestern megacity of Chongqing last year killed 39 miners, prompting the central government to order another safety overhaul.

ADDIS ABABA, JAN 18 (IANS): The UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) has said that more than 58,000 Ethiopian refugees have fled into neighbouring Sudan amid military confrontation in east African country’s northernmost Tigray region. A total of 58,612 Ethiopian refugees have been registered in Sudan since military confrontations between the federal and regional forces in the Tigray region broke out in November 2020, Xinhua news agency quoted the UN

Singapore begins Sea-Air Vaccination Exercise New cluster detected in police dog unit SINGAPORE, JAN 18 (PTI): Singapore on Monday started its COVID-19 vaccination exercise, covering 37,000 frontline workers in the aviation and maritime sectors, which employ large number of foreign workers, as a new coronavirus cluster was reported in the last 24 hours. During a visit to one of the vaccination centres at the Changi Airport Terminal 4, Transport Minister Ong Ye Kung said about 13,000 workers from the two sectors were scheduled to be vaccinated this week under the Sea-Air Vaccination Exercise. On Monday, about 2,000 workers from the avia-

tion sector will receive the vaccine, while about 1,000 maritime workers will be vaccinated at the Raffles City Convention Centre in the central business district here. Priority will be given to the 20,000 frontline workers who may come into contact with travellers from highrisk countries, the Channel News Asia reported, citing the Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore (CAAS). “These include pilots,

cabin crew, airport and aircraft cleaners, security screeners, passenger service agents, baggage handlers and cargo handlers,” said the CAAS. “You all know that the aviation industry is decimated by COVID-19, but we must have the determination that when the crisis passes, Singapore will be an aviation hub of the region and the world again,” said Ong, adding, “Singapore Airlines

can be the first vaccinated international airline in the world.” Singapore reported 14 COVID-19 cases on Monday, two of which were local and 12 imported. The Health Ministry said there was no new case in the foreign workers’ dormitories which were the main clusters during the peak of COVID-19 infection last year. All the COVID-19 clusters, or disease spreading points due to crowding, were cleared last year. On Sunday, the Ministry of Health (MoH) reported two new community cases of COVID-19 linked to a police para-veterinarian who had earlier tested positive, forming Singapore’s latest virus cluster. Twenty-five police dogs who had interacted with the para-veterinarian have tested negative for the coronavirus, according to a report by Channel News Asia.

Following the US exit from the nuclear deal in 2018 and imposition of sanctions against the Islamic republic, Iran urged the UK, France and Germany to “implement their obligations” to protect Iran’s interests under the JCPOA. As a result of the US’ unilateral exit, Iran has surpassed JCPOA-stipulated limits on its uranium enrichment level and on its stockpiles of heavy water and low-enriched uranium. Iran has also lifted JCPOA limitations on its nuclear research and development activities. On January 4, the Islamic Republic launched 20 per cent uranium enrichment process as part of the country’s Strategic Action Plan to Counter Sanctions which was approved by the parliament in December 2020.

Samsung heir sentenced to prison for corruption SEOUL, JAN 18 (IANS): A Seoul court on Monday sentenced Lee Jae-yong, heir apparent of South Korea’s biggest family-run conglomerate the Samsung Group, to two years and a half in prison for corruption charges, including a bribery case involving former President Park Geun-hye. The Seoul High Court gave Lee, Vice Chairman of Samsung Electronics Co., the prison term for bribing Park and her longtime friend, Choi Soon-sil, to win government support for a smooth transition of managerial power at the tech giant, reports Yonhap News Agency. Park was later impeached and ousted for corruption and abuse of power. Lee, who was present at the hearing on Monday, was taken into custody immediately after the verdict was handed down, less than three years after he was released on a suspended sentence. The 52-year-old Lee was charged in February 2017 with giving 29.8 billion won ($27.4 million) worth of bribes and promising to give more.

TOKYO, JAN 18 (IANS): In his first-ever policy speech since taking office last September, Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga on Monday outlined his determination to contain the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. He made the speech in the Diet or Parliament as it began its regular session, which will continue through June 16, Xinhua news agency reported. Suga vowed to tackle the surging infection cases and restore normal life “as soon as possible”. “To protect the lives and health of the Japanese people... I will get the situation back to normal as soon as possible,” he said. Earlier this month, the Prime Minister had declared a state of emergency in Tokyo and the three surrounding prefectures in a bid to stem the unabated resurgence, and has so far expanded it to seven more prefectures including Osaka and Aichi. “What is important is to provide necessary medical services to people in need. We will exhaust all measures to safeguard the medical system,” said the Japanese leader. “We are all ready to deploy the Self-Defense Forces’ medical team if requested by Governors,” he added. As of Monday, the country’s overall Covid-19 infection tally and fatalities stood at 330,683 and 4,304, respectively. In his speech, he also pledged to go ahead

Yoshihide Suga

with preparations to hold the Tokyo Olympics this summer in the face of growing public opposition amid the resurgence. “We will press ahead with preparations, with determination of building watertight anti-infection measures and holding an event that can bring hope and courage to the world,” Suga said of the Olympics. Rumours ran wild recently that the Tokyo Olympic Games would be postponed to 2032, immediately causing a stir among athletes who had planned to compete at the showpiece event in less than 200 days. Both the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and Tokyo 2020 organising committee had moved swiftly to deny such accusations, dismissing all such reports concerning the cancellation of the Games as “fake news”. They reaffirmed their commitment to hosting

the already-delayed Tokyo 2020 Games this summer. While addressing the Die, Suga called South Korea “an important neighbour” when he touched on diplomacy polices, adding bilateral relations were in a very severe situation. Earlier this month, a South Korean court ordered Japan’s government to pay damages to the South Korean victims who were forced into sex slavery for the Imperial Japan’s military brothels during World War II. Japan maintained that the case should be dropped given the sovereign immunity that allows a state to be immune from civil suit in foreign courts, but the South Korean court said it cannot be applied to the case as the illegal acts were crimes against humanity committed deliberately, systematically and widely by the Imperial Japan.

L

ady Gaga has given a powerful speech on racial justice and dismantling white supremacy as she collected a Beloved Community award. The awards were given out by The King Center, a non-profit in Atlanta that was founded in 1968 by Coretta Scott King as a “living memorial” to Dr Martin Luther King Jr. Gaga received the Higher Ground award and was presented with it by Jennifer Hudson in the virtual ceremony, which was held on January 16. In a video acceptance speech, the pop star discussed her own journey with racial justice and confronting her racial bias as a white person. “The colour of my own skin is not lost on me in this very radicalised moment,” she said. “I am aware I am before you as Stefani Germanotta, my

given name; as Lady Gaga, a famous white woman with the power of a large platform. My racial identity alone centres my whiteness while I’m still very much finding my place in crating Dr King Jr’s beloved community.” After dedicating the award to people of colour, Gaga addressed white people and told them: “Black lives matter. Black life matters. Blackness matters. Black joy matters. White people, I believe that Black life represents the best of our nation and as white people, I believe we have a responsibility to unlearn, to accept the honest truth about the history of our country, admit that white supremacy makes us unhealthy and change our own behaviours to contribute to a world where freedom is real for everyone.” She continued: “White people, I believe we must

right our wrongs without shame, we must change our actions and we must do this for ourselves. This is just one of our roles in the beloved community. To adapt some of Dr King Jr’s language, I believe white people must qualitatively heal our insides and we must quantitatively change our actions and behaviours. Unlearning allows me to walk through the world differently. I no longer say I don’t see colour, as I used to say. Instead, I now celebrate colour. Saying I don’t see colour was once the greatest thing standing in my way of understanding what a beloved community requires. “Unlearning means I look for racialised social constructs in every part of my life. Every day, all day. I try to fight against them and change my own actions when I collude with them or benefit from them. Unlearning has given me a new set of eyes. The more I see with these new eyes, the more I change my own beliefs. The more my beliefs change, the more I change my own actions. The more my actions change, the deeper my commitment to a liberated community grows and I hope my actions affect the actions of others.” (NME)

Egypt unveils 3000-year old coffins in latest archaeological discovery

E

gypt has unveiled a significant new archaeological discovery at the Saqqara necropolis south of Cairo, including 54 wooden coffins, many of which can be traced back 3000 years to the New Kingdom period. The funerary temple of Queen Neit was also discovered near the pyramid of her husband, King Teti of Egypt’s 6th dynasty which dates back 4200 years, said famed archaeologist Zahi Hawass, who

headed the archaeological mission. The coffins, or sarcophagi, include the first dating back to the New Kingdom to be found at Saqqara, a UNESCO world heritage site that is home to the Step Pyramid, the tourism and antiquities ministry said in a statement. Carved in human form and painted in bright colours, many of them are still intact. Ancient games, statues, and masks were also found.

“All these discoveries will rewrite the history of Saqqara and the New Kingdom,” said Hawass. Officials are keen to show off newly discovered artefacts as they try to revive visitor numbers after the tourism industry received a painful blow during the coronavirus pandemic. The number of tourists visiting the country dropped to 3.5 million last year from 13.1 million in 2019. (Reuters)

1st Test: England beat Sri Lanka by 7 wickets

Jonny Bairstow (left) led the way with 35 not out and had the honour of hitting the winning runs.

Galle, Jan 18 (IANS): England on Monday completed the formalities of scoring the additional 36 runs to win the first Test against Sri Lanka by seven wickets at the Galle International Stadium. Resuming on 38/3 on Day Five, wicketkeeperbatsman Jonny Bairstow and debutant Danial Lawrence carried England to their 76-run target inside 35 minutes on the final morning of the Test match. Bairstow and Lawrence remained unbeaten on 35 and 21 respectively as the visitors took a 1-0 lead in the two-match series. After England slipped to 14/3 during a frantic end to the fourth day, Bairstow

and Lawrence’s unbroken 62-run stand guided England to a rather comfortable win. Sri Lanka were earlier bundled out for mere 135 in their first innings. England, in reply, scored 421, riding on captain Joe Root’s brilliant 228 and 78 from Lawrence. The hosts then came out with an improved batting performance as Lahiru Thirimanne, Angelo Mathews and Kusal Perera scored 111, 71 and 62 respectively to help Sri Lanka end their second innings on 359 and set a 76-run target. “We were outplayed in the first innings with bat and ball. Lo n d o n, Ja n 1 8 (Agencies): Luka Doncic passed Michael Jordan on the NBA triple-double career list with his 29th - but was still critical of his display as the Dallas Mavericks lost 117-101 to the Chicago Bulls. The 21-year-old Mavericks guard finished with

36 points, 16 rebounds and 15 assists, but only scored six of those points in the second half. Doncic moved into joint 15th on the NBA all-time triple-double list, which is topped by former Cincinnati Royals and Milwaukee Bucks player Oscar Robertson on 181.

we have to get a big total in the first innings. It cost us the game,” said stand-in skipper Dinesh Chandimal after the match. “Credit goes to Thirimanne, Angelo and Kusal. Everyone did their bit in the second innings. If we had another 70-80 runs, it could’ve been a different story. Have to take positives out of this and go on to the second Test,” he added. The two teams will now face each other in the second and final Test at the same venue from Friday. Aus Open: ‘No special treatment’ for players

Lo n d o n, Ja n 1 8 (Agencies): Players living under strict quarantine rules after arriving for the Australian Open will get “no special treatment”, says Victorian premier Daniel Andrews. Seventy-two players are confined to their hotel rooms in Melbourne for 14 days after positive coronavirus test results on flights bound for the event. At least nine infected people - including one player - are in quarantine, officials say. “The virus doesn’t treat you specially, so neither do we,” Andrews said. Some players have complained the harder 14-day quarantine was unnecessary. With the Grand Slam tournament set to start on February 8, players are resorting to hitting balls against the walls and windows of their rooms to stay sharp. “I know there’s been a bit of chatter from a number of players about the rules,” Andrews said. “The rules apply to them as they apply to everybody else and they were all briefed on that before they came and that was the condition on which they came. “So there’s no special treatment here.” The affected players have been deemed close contacts of the four Covid19 cases on the three planes which arrived from Los Angeles, Abu Dhabi and Doha.

French player Alize Cornet, who is not one of the 72 players affected, apologised after initially saying the decision to keep them inside their room was “insane”. Kazakhstan’s world number 28 Yulia Putintseva said the players had not been told they would be confined to their rooms if one person on the whole flight tested positive. Others said they had been made aware of the possible scenario by tournament bosses. Gordon Reid, Britain’s two-time men’s wheelchair Grand Slam champion, is among the players confined to his room and says it is a “minority that are kicking up a fuss”. “But the majority of the time that minority are the loudest,” the Scot added. The girlfriend of Australian player Bernard Tomic put a video on social media detailing their experience of quarantine in a hotel so far, saying they have been playing video games for 11 hours a day, ordering their own food rather than eating what was being provided, and washing their plates in the bathroom sink. The players who have not been forced into the tougher restrictions are allowed out of their rooms for up to five hours every day. Practice has finally got underway at Melbourne Park after delays caused by Covid testing and transport problems.

Messi sent off as Athletic Bilbao clinches Spanish Super Cup title

London, Jan 18 (Reuters): Lionel Messi was sent off for the first time in his Barcelona career in the closing stages of extra time as it lost 3-2 to Athletic Bilbao in the Spanish Super Cup on Sunday. Messi, who returned to the starting lineup after missing the semi-final victory over Real Sociedad through injury, was dismissed after striking Asier Villalibre in the final minute. The Argentine had been heavily involved in a more positive way as Barca took the lead five minutes before the break. Messi’s goalbound effort was blocked, falling to the feet of Antoine Griezmann, who netted the first of his two goals. Bilbao’s responded as Oscar De Marcos met Inaki Williams’ cross two minutes later to send the

sides in level at halftime. Raul Garcia’s header was disallowed for offside by VAR after the restart as Bilbao had the better chances in a tense affair. However, French forward Griezmann looked to have won it for the Catalans with a goal against the run of play 14 minutes from time, only for substitute Villalibre to volley home in the 90th minute to send the game into the extra period. Three minutes into the additional half hour Williams curled a stunning effort into the far corner from the edge of the box to give Bilbao the lead for the first time in the tie. “What a goal it was!,” said beaming Bilbao coach Marcelino. “It was a great piece of skill and you couldn’t produce a better finish. “In general I don’t think Barca deserved to

take the lead, especially in the first half, anyway. “The lads were so focused on this game and I’m so proud of them. They make your job easy and enjoyable.” Marcelino was only named as coach this month after Gaizka Garitano was dismissed, and the 55-yearold has now beaten Barca in the last two finals it has reached after his success over the Catalans with Valencia in the 2019 Copa del Rey final. “It’s going to be impossible to keep up that record,” he said. “I don’t know how many semifinals I had to play before actually reaching a final, I think it was eight, but now I’ve won in two finals.” A third Super Cup title is Bilbao’s first silverware since it claimed the same trophy in 2015 with a 5-1 aggregate win over Barcelona.

Pro League perfect test ahead of Olympics: Sreejesh Bengaluru, Jan 18 (IANS): India’s veteran goalkeeper PR Sreejesh feels the upcoming FIH Hockey Pro League matches will be a perfect test for the team ahead of the Tokyo Olympic Games. “We are hopeful the FIH Hockey Pro League matches are held as per schedule this year, that way we get good matches against strong teams ahead of Tokyo Olympics in July. These matches will be a perfect test for us as players as well as a team and I am sure the final team selection for the Olympics,” said Sreejesh. On January 18 last year, the Indian team had made a sensational debut at the FIH Hockey Pro League with a 5-2 win against the Netherlands. Though in the next game, the Dutch bounced back to hold India 3-3 in regulation time, Sreejesh’s heroics in the shootout ensured India began the coveted League with back-to-back wins. The final score was 3-1 in India’s favour. In the next leg of Pro League matches, India are scheduled to play against Argentina in April, Great Britain, Spain and Germany in May.

Siraj takes five; India need 324 to win B risbane , Jan 1 8 (IANS): India will need 324 runs more, with all their wickets intact, when they come out to bat on Tuesday to win the fourth and final Test against Australia at The Gabba. India reached 4/0 in their chase on 328 in the extended final session on Monday before rain started pouring in and umpires were forced to call for early Stumps. Only 1.5 overs could be bowled in India’s second innings on Day Four as Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill remained unbeaten on 4 and 0 respectively. The weather forecast for the final day isn’t great and Australia will be praying that rain gods stay away so that they can win the Brisbane Test and win the Border-Gavaskar series, a trophy which they lost in India’s last tour of 2018-19. On the other hand, a draw in the game would be sufficient for India to retain the coveted trophy. The highest successful chase at Gabba ame in 1951, when Australia finished 236/7, but the Tim Paine led-side have fresher memories of how India incredibly salvaged a draw last week in Sydney.

Earlier, India bowled out Australia for 294 in their second innings, after resuming the day on 21/0. Steve Smith was the top scorer for Australia in their second essay as he scored 55 runs off 74 deliveries, with the help of seven boundaries. David Warner, Marcus Harris and Cameron Green also made notable contributions of 48, 38 and 37. Pat Cummins and skipper Tim Paine also made scores of 28 and 27. For India, right-arm fast bowler Mohammed Siraj picked up his maiden five-wicket haul, conceding 73 runs in 19.5 overs. Shardul Thakur also picked four

wickets for 61 while debutant off-spinner Washington Sundar scalped one. India had posted 336 in reply to Australia’s first inning score of 369, thus conceding a 33-run lead. The four-match series is tied at 1-1 with Australia winning the first Test in Adelaide and India winning the second in Melbourne. The third Test in Sydney had ended in a draw. BRIEF SCORES: Australia 369 and 294 (Steve Smith 55, David Warner 48; Mohammed Siraj 5/73) vs India 336 and 4/0 at Stumps on Day Four (Rohit Sharma 4*, Shubman Gill 0*; Mitchell Starc 0/4)

Boca win inaugural Maradona Cup 10-man East Bengal hold Chennaiyin to goalless draw

BUENOS AIRES, Jan 18 (Reuters): Boca Juniors won Argentina’s inaugural Diego Armando Maradona Cup 5-3 in a shootout on Sunday after Banfield had scored deep in stoppage time to level the match at 1-1. The tournament, which was renamed to honour the Argentine great after he passed away in November, kicked off in October as football returned following a seven-month hiatus due to the novel

coronavirus pandemic. A rock band comprising former professional footballers played live on the pitch before kick off and the stadium was lit up with fireworks and a light show featuring images and quotes from the charismatic former Boca Juniors striker. “This cup is a tribute to Diego, and he’ll surely be accompanying our celebrations,” Boca’s Ramon Abila said after the game. After a tepid first 45

minutes at the San Juan del Bicentenario stadium, Boca took the lead with a spectacular strike from Edwin Carmona 19 minutes into the second half. However, Luciano Lollo equalised in the sixth minute of stoppage time for Banfield, just moments after Boca had Emmanuel Mas sent off. Boca, who last recorded a victory on Dec. 27, converted all five of their spot kicks while Jorge Rodriguez missed for Banfield.

New Delhi, Jan 18 (Agencies): A spirited effort by the SC East Bengal defense led by goalkeeper Debjit Majumder helped the Kolkata side nullify a one-man advantage to Chennaiyin ending up with a vital point in the Indian Super League at the GMC Stadium, Bambolim, on Monday. Robbie Fowler’s side was forced to play with a man down for almost over an hour after Ajay Chettri received his marching orders at the half-hour mark, News18 reported. However, SCEB held their ground throughout the game to frustrate Chennaiyin. SCEB now extend their unbeaten run to seven games. SCEB made three changes as Anthony Pilkington was back in the side in place of Matti Steinmann. New signing Ajay Chhetri was also handed his first start while Surchandra Singh was the other change. Chennaiyin made just one change as Edwin Vanspaul had his second start of the season, coming in place of Fat-

khulo Fatkhulloev. The high-intensity game saw tackles flying early in the game. Ajay received the first yellow in the 22nd minute for his mistimed challenge on Anirudh Thapa. Chennaiyin had the first chance in the 23rd minute when a Thapa freekick into the box found

Eli Sabia. The Brazilian crossed the ball into the area to an unmarked Enes Sipovic, who couldn’t get his header on target. SCEB soon found themselves on the backfoot at the half-hour mark when Ajay received his second booking for a foul on Rahim Ali, reducing them to 10 men. This was the

third time this season that Fowler’s side had received a red card. Taking advantage of their numerical superiority, Chennaiyin pressed hard and nearly took the lead when Jerry Lalrinzuala played in Esmael Goncalves, who found Thapa in the box. The midfielder managed to roll the ball

past the onrushing Debjit, but couldn’t direct his shot goalward. Narayan Das cleared the ball to safety before Rahim could get to it. SCEB managed to keep their opponents at bay for the rest of the half, as the teams walked out even at the break. Fowler’s team looked threatening after the restart and should have found the back of the net when Pilkington hit the side netting from a tight angle. Then, Debjit pulled off a stunning save to deny Isma from the edge of the box to keep the scores level. At the other end, the Chennaiyin defense was caught napping as a long free-kick saw Pilkington try his luck, but Vishal Kaith made a fine block. SCEB were saved again by Debjit when the custodian cleared the ball in time, coming off the line to deny Rahim. He later showed good reflexes to get a strong hand to Lallianzuala Chhangte’s goalbound shot. Tuesday’s Match Hyderabad Vs Odisha: 7:30 pm

Man City beat Palace 4-0; climb to 2nd in Premier League 8th Nihokhu Chishi running trophy London, Jan 18 (AP): John Stones scored his first Premier League goals for Manchester City in a 4-0 victory over Crystal Palace to help his team leap up to second in the Premier League on Sunday. The defender netted twice and Ilkay Gundogan and Raheem Sterling also scored fine goals as City claimed a fifth successive win by overpowering a Palace side missing Wilfried Zaha at the Etihad Stadium. City moved above Liverpool after the champions drew 0-0 with Manchester United, which has played a game more than its neighbour. Stones appeared to be facing an uncertain future last year after falling out of favor under manager Pep Guardiola in his fifth season at the club. It seemed the England international might have to settle for being fourth-choice centre back — at best — behind Ruben Dias, Aymeric Laporte and Nathan Ake. Yet given an opportunity to play alongside new signing Dias early in the campaign, Stones grasped it and his position now looks

cepted congratulatory hugs from his teammates only for Fernandinho to come along and remind of the need to keep their distance. After that, fist-bumps seemed to suffice. De Bruyne fired another shot narrowly wide before City got its third in the 68th. Guaita did well to keep out a firm header from Dias but the ball rebounded to Stones, who lashed it back into the net almost instinctively.
