were deployed to save the valley, which included forest field staff, SAYO volunteers and SDRF, DEF and 4th NAP personnel. DFO said that they had also contacted National Remote Sensing Agency to get regular update on active fire locations to assist the team. Speaking to media persons after coming out from the valley, Kohima range forest officer Pezaneinuo Chielie said the volunteers and personnel from various government agencies on Thursday successfully completed a fire line cutting measuring 5 km in length and 2 metres wide in the priority area.
Considering the terrain of the range, she said that fire-line cutting was the only viable option to contain the spread of the fire to the valley. Chielie admitted that there was very little humans could do to douse the fire since there were heavy winds from the south and west fuelling the fire. She however claimed that the fire was largely under control. The forest department would be conducting a survey to fully assess the total damage caused by the fire, she added. As per the latest information, Rajkumar also said that the main valley was safe. Over 200 SAYO volunteers were camping in the base camp to monitor and to tackle the situation, he added. Manipur chief minister, Biren Singh took an aerial survey of the valley in Manipur side on Thursday. Singh said that the wildfire had already reached Mt. Asli, the highest peak in Manipur. “If the wind direction is going to the southern side, there is also a high possibility of entering the thickest forest called Kozürü in Manipur. Need help,” tweeted Singh.
Ravi urges govt to frame SOP, EWS
DIMAPUR, DEC 31 (NPN): Nagaland Governor, R.N. Ravi has urged the State government to immediately frame an appropriate Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) including satellite-based real time early warning system (EWS) to prevent recurrence of such disaster like Dzükou valley wildfire. Ravi, who was on a visit to Dzükou valley along with his family on Wednesday, accompanied by DC Kohima, SP Kohima, SAPO and SAYO members, had the first hand assessment of the intensity of the devastating fire in the valley and extent of destruction caused by it, PRO to Governor stated. Ravi maintained that the absence of a functional SOP to effectively respond to such a disaster had aggravated the situation. He thanked SAYO volunteers and policemen who, in an extremely adverse ground condition risked their lives to battled the raging fire to contain it from further spreading. All States to conduct COVID-19 vaccine dry run on January 2 NEW DELHI, DEC 31 (PTI): A dry run for COVID-19 vaccination will be conducted by all State and Union Territory administrations on January 2 to test the linkages between planning and implementation and to identify the challenges, the Centre said on Thursday. The activity is proposed to be conducted in all state capitals in at least 3 session sites. Some states will also include districts that are situated in difficult terrain/ have poor logistical support, while Maharashtra and Kerala are likely to schedule the dry run in major cities other than their capital, the Union Health Ministry said. “The objective of the dry run for COVID-19 vaccine introduction is to assess operational feasibility in the use of Co-WIN application in field environment, to test the linkages between planning and implementation and to identify the challenges and guide way forward prior to actual implementation. This is also expected to give confidence to programme managers at various levels,”
the ministry said. The central government has also asked all states and UTs to ensure effective preparedness for the COVID-19 vaccine roll-out. Union Health Secretary Rajesh Bhushan on Thursday chaired a highlevel meeting to review the preparedness at session sites for COVID-19 vaccination with principal secretaries (Health) and other health administrators of all states and UTs through videoconferencing. The planning for the vaccine introduction will be as per the Operational Guidelines issued by the Health Ministry on December 20. Regarding the dry run to be held, for each of the three session sites, the Medical Officer In-charge will identify 25 test beneficiaries (healthcare workers). The states and UTs have been asked to ensure that the data of these beneficiaries is uploaded in Co-WIN. These beneficiaries will also be available at the session site for the dry run. The states and UTs shall prepare the facilities
and users to be created on Co-WIN application including uploading the data of Health Care Worker (HCW) beneficiaries, the ministry stated. The states and UTs have been asked to ensure physical verification of all proposed sites for adequacy of space, logistical arrangements, internet connectivity, electricity, safety, etc. and prepare at least three model session sites in each state (at state capital) for demonstration. They have been asked to ensure that the model sites have separate entry and exit in a ‘three-room set-up’ with adequate space outside for awareness generation activities, display all IEC material at these sites and ensure that all SOPs and protocols are being practised at the identified sites in an ideal environment along with vaccination teams to be identified and trained in all aspects. The dry run will also equip the state and UT administration in management of vaccine supply, storage and logistics including cold chain management, the ministry stated.
Opted for peace keeping in mind past, CBSE board exams from May Nagaland COVID tally 11927 COVID-19 STATUS AS ON december 31, 2020 present & future consequences: Niki 4 to June 10, 2021: Pokhriyal DIMAPUR, DEC 31 (NPN): Being mindful of the past, present and future consequences on Naga generations, NSCN/GPRN president ‘gen’ (retd) Niki Sumi said his organisation opted to heed to the call of Nagas to give peace a chance despite some reservations. In a statement, Niki explained that the decision to give peace a chance emanated from most of the Nagas appealing and yearning for peace, which had been absent spanning across decades and generations. “I, as a Naga, cannot unilaterally go against the wishes and aspirations of our people and, consequent to our decision to give peace a chance, I might have hurt or let down the sentiments of a few which was never my intention. Therefore, I do request all to introspect on the wishes and aspirations of the Naga people to give
peace a chance,” he stated. Mentioning that he cannot thank enough the Nagas from all spheres and ages for showing their overwhelming love and support to the common Naga cause, Sumi acknowledged that he had always derived fortitude and resilience through trials and tribulations with God’s mercy and Naga people’s support. He recalled the 16point Agreement of 1960, six rounds of talks in 1966 and Shillong Accord of 1975 and claimed that NSCN/GPRN split due to miscommunication and misunderstanding about the Indian government’s open door policy for talks. Sadly, he regretted that every agreement or political talks only paved the way for more bloodshed among Nagas, further weakening “us” and creating more division among Nagas.
CNTC lauds Niki
Central Nagaland Tribes Council (CNTC) has expressed happiness at having learnt that NSCN/ GPRN led by Niki Sumi had come across the border in the interest of people to give peace an opportunity. In a statement, council president Lanu Imchen and vice-president Hukive K Yepthomi applauded NSCN (KN) for paying a heed to the call of the people and said they were optimistic that the longawaited political solution of the Indo-Naga Issue would be obtained In a short span of time with the coming of NSCN (KN). CNTC further urged Government of India and its leaders to be earnest in their efforts to find an honourable and acceptable solution to the long-vexed Naga political issue.
New Delhi, Dec 31 (PTI): The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) will conduct classes 10 and 12 exams from May 4 to June 10 next year, Union Education Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal ‘Nishank’ announced on Thursday. Practical examinations will be conducted from March 1. The results of the board exams will be announced by July 15, he added. Usually, practical exams are conducted in January and written exams begin in February and conclude in March. However, the exams are being delayed this session in view of the COVID-19 pandemic. “The board exams for class 10 and 12 will be conducted from May 4 to June 10. Schools will be allowed to conduct practical exams from March 1. Date sheet for both the classes will be issued soon. The results will be declared by July 15,” Pokhriyal announced. They were partially reopened in some states from October 15.

‘No ILP, No Rest’ torch rally held in Shillong
Torch light rally in Shillong. S H I L LO N G, D E C 3 1 (AGENCIES): “No ILP No Rest” echoed the streets of Shillong city on December 30 as over eight thousand members of pressure groups under the umbrella of Confederation of Meghalaya Social Organisation (CoMSO) marched from Shillong polytechnic till Motphran carrying torchlight pressing for their demand for Inner Line Permit (ILP) in Meghalaya while commemorating the 158th death anniversary of the legendary freedom fighter, Woh Kiang Nongbah, reports The Sentinel Assam. The light of the thousand torch lights illuminated on the faces of the agitated members of CoMSO as they shouted slogans and waved their flags as they rallied through the narrow lanes and streets.
Soon the crowd had reached Motphran parking lot where the leaders took turns to address the gathering on the need for ILP as soon as possible. CoMSO Secretary Roy Kupar Synrem had said, “We are commemorating the 158 death anniversary of Who Kiang Nongbah who was a freedom fighter of hynnietrwep people hailing from Jaintia Hills and at the same time we wanted to carry out this torch rally to show our displeasure with the adamant attitude of the central government on our demand for ILP.” Recalling that the Union Home Minister Amit Shah had recently mentioned in his speech at Manipur that the Manipur had not asked for ILP but the Prime Minister had given it to them, Roy had
questioned, “We want to ask the NDA government why is this step-motherly attitude towards the people of Meghalaya”. He further said, “We have been asking for ILP since a long time ago and this is not the first time and officially the state assembly unanimously had passed the resolution impressing upon the central government that it is high time now that Meghalaya should get ILP.” For several years, people of Meghalaya have been demanding for the enactment of ILP, to protect the interests of the indigenous communities of the hill state. The protestors had demanded that the ILP be implemented in Meghalaya after the Union government had granted ILP to Manipur.

He prayed for those who lost their lives primarily due to COVID 19 this year and said that 2021 would be a year of peace and progress particularly for the Bodo people of BTR and said that the Council under him would ensure corr uption-free governance to the people of BTR.

The zoo authorities took the decision keeping in mind the safety of the animals and to protect them from the Covid 19 infection. However, the authorities of the Zoo decided to reopen it from January 2. Speaking to the media Minister Parimal Shuklavaidya, said, “If public wants to visit here and enjoy from Tomorrow (January 1), on the first day of the year, we will discuss
2020 Assam: Covid, gas spill, floods, protests
Guwahati, Dec 31 (PTI): Assam had little luck escaping the ravages of COVID-19 in a year filled with myriad developments for the northeastern state from aggressive protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act and birth of new political parties to a major industrial disaster. Assam’s tryst with the killer virus happened on March 31, when a returnee from outside the state tested positive for COVID-19 in Silchar, and since then over 1,040 people have died from the contagion and more than 2,16,000 afflicted. The Assam government adopted the policy of ‘Ruthless Quarantine with A Human Heart’ as nearly 30 lakh people underwent both institutional and home isolation. It also set up 550 dedicated COVID-19 hospitals and health centres to deal with the pandemic, and provided Rs 2,000 each to people from the state who were stranded outside during the nationwide lockdown. The widespread agitation against the contentious Citizenship Act in 2019 spilled onto 2020 with renewed vigour before coming to an abrupt end owing to the lockdown in March. The Assam government quelled the protests with an iron hand, arresting key leaders like Akhil Gogoi, who opposed tooth and nail the law that seeks to grant citizenship to Hindu, Sikh, Parsi, Buddhist and Christian migrants who fled religious persecution in
Pakistan, Afghanistan and Bangladesh. The anger of the indigenous Assamese was triggered by the concern that they would be reduced to a minority as Hindu Bengalis and illegal Muslim migrants from neighbouring Bangladesh posed a threat to their land, language and culture. The Centre and the state government made efforts to assuage the Assamese people with the promise that they were committed to constitutionally safeguarding their political, linguistic, cultural and land rights, and urged the High Level Committee on Implementation of Clause Six of the Assam Accord, set up last year, to submit its report at the earliest. The 13-member committee submitted its report in February, but there was no further action or word on it, prompting the All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) to make the report public on August 11. Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, however, asserted that his government and the Centre are committed to implementing the report. There was also no further progress on the National Register of Citizens, the final list of which had last year excluded the names of 19,06,657 people. A total of 3,11,21,004names were included out of 3,30,27,661 applicants. In December, NRC state coordinator Hitesh Dev Sarma told the Gauhati High Court that it was only
a “supplementary list” and the final document is yet to come out. Over 10,000 names were either wrongly included or excluded and necessary orders have been issued to delete nearly 4,800 “ineligible persons” from the document, Sarma said in an affidavit. Two new political parties were floated during the year as the state geared up for assembly elections in 2021 The AASU and the Asom Jatiyotabadi Yuba Chatra Parishad (AJYCP) formed the Asom Jatiyo Parishad (AJP), while the Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS) created the Raijor Dal. Both the parties have agreed on an alliance, but details are yet to be worked out. The opposition Congress and the AIUDF announced that the new parties will be part of a ‘Grand Alliance’ to prevent the BJP and its allies from returning to power in the state, with former chief minister Tarun Gogoi playing an important role in the initiative. Gogoi, unfortunately, tested positive for the coronavirus in the last week of August and succumbed to post- COVID complications on November 23, creating a void in the party and resulting in defections. The ruling BJP, late in the year, emerged victorious in the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) and Tiwa Autonomous Council polls, and asserted that the outcome was like victory in a semi-final match before the
assembly elections. Assam was also witness to one of its worst industrial disasters in the pandemic year, after Oil India Ltd’s gas well at Baghjan in Tinsukia district started spewing gas uncontrollably. Three persons lost their lives due to a fire incident and highvoltage electric shock. The well was finally ‘killed’ and the flames doused after 173 days, but not before forcing more than 3,000 people to leave their homes, besides damaging the bio-diversity of the neighbouring MaguriMotapung wetlands and the Dibru- Saikhowa National Park. Another major environmental issue that rocked the state was alleged illegal mining by Coal India Ltd inside the Dehing-Patkai Wildlife Sanctuary, with the state government ordering an inquiry into it and PILs filed in the Gauhati High Court. Floods, which create havoc in the state year after year, were particularly devastating, as they coincided with the pandemic, affecting over 60 lakh people in 29 districts. In the course of the year, the United Liberation Front of Asom (Independent), which is yet to come to the negotiating table, suffered a serious blow when its deputy commander-inchief Dhristi Rajkhowa was apprehended by the Army in November and, along with 18 other ULFA militants, surrendered before the state government in December.
about this with the senior officials and if we can manage definitely we will reopen from Tomorrow itself.” According to a media report Tejas Mariswamy, the divisional forest officer of the state Zoo said that initially, it was supposed to reopen from the December 1, but due to the recurrence of Covid-19 the Zoo remained closed. He further said, a SOP has been issued for the reopening. And visitors have been asked to follow all the Covid 19 protocol strictly to prevent the spread of the virus.
(PTI): Arunachal Pradesh reported two new COVID19 cases, which raised the tally in the state to 16,711, a health department official said on Thursday. Two fresh cases from Tawang and East Siang were detected through rapid antigen tests, State Surveillance Officer (SSO) Dr Lobsang Jampa said. At least eleven people were cured of the disease on Wednesday, taking the total number of recoveries in the state to 16,549. The recovery rate among coronavirus patients currently stands at 99.03 per cent, he said. Ar unachal Pradesh now has 106 active cases, while 56 people have succumbed to the infection so far, he said. The Capital Complex region, comprising Itanagar, Naharlagun, Nirjuli and Banderdewa areas, has the highest number of active cases at 39, followed by Tawang (30), West Kameng (11) and East Siang (10). The state has so far tested 3,77,725 samples for COVID-19, including 673 on Wednesday, and the current positivity rate is at 0.97, Jampa added.
GUWAHATI, DEC 31 (AGENCIES): The Assam government capped RTPCR and Rapid Antigen Test rates at Rs 1,200 and Rs 500 respectively on Wednesday in view of a sharp fall in prices of testing equipment which are readily available in the market now, reports The Sentinel Assam. The notification issued by the state health department has brought a big relief to people of the state who had to pay up to Rs 3,500-Rs 4,500 to get their Covid tests done in private healthcare facilities and laboratories. Also Read Assam: Mask gallery added to Sivasagar’s Barna Kutir Artists’ Village Rs 4,500 was the maximum chargeable rate notified by the Centre earlier. The latest order issued by the principal secretary to the state health department, Samir K Sinha, had stated that the maximum rates chargeable for testing RTPCR test samples, which are collected at the labs and hospitals, including test cost, PPE kit and other related charges, has been
notified to be Rs 1,000. But Rs 200 extra might be charged if the RT-PCR test samples are collected from home. The order has also asked all laboratories to follow guidelines issued by the ICMR from time to time. “All hospitals/ institutes/laboratories are instructed to display the revised tariffs prominently and strictly comply with the above orders. Non-compliance shall attract action as per the provision of law,” the order stated. It noted that the concerned district administration and health department officials shall closely monitor and enforce the rates strictly. In government hospitals of Assam, Covid test is done free of cost, however, the government is charging Rs 1,000 if someone seeks the swab sample report within 24 hours. Earlier, till the month of November, the state health department used to charge Rs 2,200 for acquiring Covid reports within 24 hours.
Tripura to strengthen lab infrastructure amid concern over new COVID-19 strain
Agartala, Dec 31 (PTI): Amid concern over the detection of a mutated and more infectious strain of COVID-19 in the country, the Tripura government has decided to strengthen the infrastructure of laboratories where coronavirus tests are being conducted, a minister said. The health department has already initiated a process to procure new equipment which would be used to detect the mutated coronavirus strain, state education minister and spokesperson of the government Ratanlal Nath said. “All precautionary measures have been in place to contain the spread of COVID-19 in the state. We have decided to purchase machines for genetic analysis. The women’s
hostel of Panchayati Raj Training Institute (PRTI) has been earmarked as a quarantine centre for treatment of those infected with the new variant of coronavirus,” he said. All international passengers, who arrived in India from December 9 to 22 and tested positive for COVID-19, will be subjected to genome sequencing as part of the Centre’s strategy to detect the new coronavirus strain that has emerged in the United Kingdom recently. One of five travellers from the UK, who arrived here a few days ago, has tested positive for COVID19, the minister said. “The swab samples of the UK returnee were sent to National Institute of Virology (NIV), Pune to ascertain whether the patient has contracted the
new strain of coronavirus,” he said. According to the minister, RT-PCR tests for all international passengers have been made mandatory. The government has started a training programme for around 44,521 health workers to impart knowledge of handling COVID-19 vaccines ahead of its roll-out, Nath said on Wednesday. Overall nine vaccine storage facilities and 145 cold chain points are being set up in the state, he said. The COVID-19 tally in Tripura was at 33,258 on Wednesday, while the death toll reached 382. At least 32,712 people have been cured of the disease so far, and the number of active cases in the state was at 141.

Adieu 2020, Welcome 2021
Vol. XXxI NO. 27 Dimapur, FRIDAY, JANUARY 1, 2021

Living with hope
s the year 2020 draws to a close at the stroke of midnight on December 31, the world will be welcoming the new year 2021 especially with hopes and expectations. Many people live on hope while some have lost it. As the countdown for the new year begins; perhaps it also provides an occasion to recall events that have taken place in 2020 as it slips into the past. The hopes for a peaceful and prosperous year ahead, is on everyone’s mind. We tend to look ahead with the usual feeling that things would get better in the new year. There is a psychological build up to bid goodbye to the old year and to welcome the New Year. Despite the hopes for a bright new year, the lengthening shadow of the deadly coronavirus will still haunt the world even in the new year. The entire world has experienced how the virus has shaken and changed life. Christmas festivities across the world has been dampened while in some countries people had to remain indoors as the virus, like the plague, forced governments to clamp down on public gathering. The arrival of a new mutated strain of COVID-19 during Christmas is a harbinger of tragedy and has compelled many countries to enforce re-lockdown and in some states in India, night curfew has been imposed from December 31,2020 evening till after January 2,2021. India has been shaken by the coronavirus which has totally disrupted its socioeconomy. In Nagaland, as people step into the new year 2021 with many unresolved issues they continue to live on hope. These issues cannot be ignored as some of them have spiralled to levels that demand urgent attention and to be handled with cooperative wisdom, if society in Nagaland is to come out of the shadows of doubts, confusion and conflicts. The lingering hope is for a better environment that would foster changes for the better.Illegal and unauthorised collections carried out under the nose of authorities, continues to grow including corruption at all levels. It is a syndrome of a sense of entitlement. The new year also provides an opportunity to effect cleansing of the electoral practices, which has been blamed as a major contributor of criminalisation of the Naga society. Other issues that demand attention also include- need for quality of education system, ending the bogus appointment raj in government, anti-social activities, rising unemployment, mounting concerns of HIV, thriving black market in alcohol and drugs etc. These are concerns that pose severe challenge on the government, NGOs, society and church which demand a unified effort with urgency, determination and consistency in order to stem the tide. Our values bind us together. Our sense of community makes us stronger. The more people accept the need to work together, the more will they realise the hope. A crisis can bind people in ways that normal situations often don’t. The crisis should make people more resilient to achieve their hopes. As people turn the first pages on the new year, they need to stop dreaming and act together if they want to do differently from the previous year, the things they hope will happen and the things they would like to achieve in the upcoming year. People need to lean on each other and be able to walk the journey to the new year together.
DailyDevotion Yesterday You shall not go out with haste,…for the Lord will go before you, and the God of Israel will be your rear guard. —Isaiah 52:12 Security from Yesterday. “…God requires an account of what is past” (Ecclesiastes 3:15). At the end of the year we turn with eagerness to all that God has for the future, and yet anxiety is apt to arise when we remember our yesterdays. Our present enjoyment of God’s grace tends to be lessened by the memory of yesterday’s sins and blunders. But God is the God of our yesterdays, and He allows the memory of them to turn the past into a ministry of spiritual growth for our future. God reminds us of the past to protect us from a very shallow security in the present. Security for Tomorrow. “…the Lord will go before you….” This is a gracious revelation— that God will send His forces out where we have failed to do so. He will keep watch so that we will not be tripped up again by the same failures, as would undoubtedly happen if He were not our “rear guard.” And God’s hand reaches back to the past, settling all the claims against our conscience. Security for Today. “You shall not go out with haste….” As we go forth into the coming year, let it not be in the haste of impetuous, forgetful delight, nor with the quickness of impulsive thoughtlessness. But let us go out with the patient power of knowing that the God of Israel will go before us. Our yesterdays hold broken and irreversible things for us. It is true that we have lost opportunities that will never return, but God can transform this destructive anxiety into a constructive thoughtfulness for the future. Let the past rest, but let it rest in the sweet embrace of Christ. Leave the broken, irreversible past in His hands, and step out into the invincible future with Him.

And now we welcome the new year. Full of things that have never been. ~ Rainer Maria Rilke
Nagaland Post, Dimapur FRIDAY, JANUARY 1, 2021
P
2020 set many new paradigms, which may be the norm in the coming years, too.
erhaps the humans have awaited no other year’s end so eagerly across the world as that of 2020. Similarly, no other event in the recent history has had such a far-reaching impact as that of the coronavirus pandemic, on the world and its inhabitants. The year 2020 had so many time-tested patterns and living styles changed and set many new paradigms, affecting virtually every sphere of our living, that it could be easily termed as the harbinger of a new living style. New style of living and working 2020 taught us how we could maintain a safe distance from each other and yet pursue our daily routine easily. This included working from home, learning at home and even socialising at home: all through the net access. The pandemic forced us to have a limited number of guests at weddings and other family functions. It also resulted in a realisation that how much we are spending on unproductive and uncalled for activities. Instead if we have so much extra, then we could easily share it with the needy and the poor. The lockdown forced commercial organisations to adopt new techniques and work styles adhering to the social distancing and other safety measures. Work from home (WFH) became the norm and companies realised that instead of spending so
B
much on their infrastructure maintenance, employee transportation costs and meetings and conferences and exhibitions, novel ways could be found to still achieve the results. It also resulted in better mental health of the employees as they didn’t had to bear the daily toll of commute and instead could devote more time to productive activity. Pristine Nature Just like a two-sided coin, Corona too brought unprecedented alarm and panic, besides immediate counter measures to manage it across the world. It also forced us to pause for a while and think how we are managing our affairs with the nature. While the news about Corona’s devastation continued during 2020, along with the resulting worldwide Lockdown, some positive stories about the natural changes also started appearing, which certainly brought a smile to our faces. Paradoxical as it may sound, but it could be surmised that Corona might be a timely wellness program for our environment and planet earth and even us. There were reports from several European countries of better air, clean atmosphere, sparkling water in canals and rivers, birds and animals appearing at places where they have not been seen for a while. In Wuhan, where the outbreak initially began back in December ‘19, the
sky, which is usually home to dangerous air pollution levels, has turned natural blue. The change has been attributed to travel bans and the pause in factory work. Similarly in India, there were reports of a cleaner Ganga in Kanpur and Varanasitwo cities where it is the most polluted, a cleaner Yamuna in Delhi, residents of foothill cities in Punjab were able to see the majestic Himalayan mountain ranges from their rooftops besides birds chirping and animals wandering into human habitats at night in foothill towns. Self-healing While the nature gave time to mother earth to heal, it also gave humans a break from their busy daily routine, to allocate not just some time, but full time to self. This happened at physical, mental and spiritual levels. What we fail to realise is that perhaps nature gave us this time, to take a break from our daily humdrum and ponder over those issues, for which we earlier never used to find time. Mentally or spiritually, the lockdown gave us enough time to ponder over those spiritual issues about which we always wanted to read and study in depth but were never able to focus on. Now we were able to ponder over questions related to our existence, our role and duties as a human being, and what we are getting and giving back to the society.
Your Time starts NOW!
il Keane, an American cartoonist well-known for his comic strip ‘The Family Circus’, said: “Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, today is a gift of God, which is why we call it, the present.” Millions of people across the world are often regretful over an imperfect past. The past might make you ‘Tense’ but the future can be made ‘Perfect’! So, stop repeating history. Stop regretting the past and look towards the future with faith. Mother Teresa was right when she said, “Yesterday is gone. Tomorrow has not yet come. We have only today to do what we have to. Let us begin!” No doubt we can neither re-live the past nor undo the things done but we can all begin afresh and have a great finish! Carl Bard, an American inspirational writer, once said, “Although no one can go back and make a brand new start, anyone can start from now and make a brand new ending.” There are however a few things to keep in mind before we begin. We must remember that: THE R E A R E THI N G S W E CAN’T CONTROL: We cannot control everything and we cannot change everything, but there are a few things in our lives that lie in our hands and can be changed. Martin Luther, once said: “You can’t stop the birds from flying over your head, but you can keep them from making a nest in your hair.” In order to prevent a bird from nesting on our heads, we must be vigilant, proactive and determined. This attitude of not entertaining mistakes in life can prevent them from recurring in the future. As a result, we can learn from our past failures and celebrate our little victories in the present and future. There’s no point in crying over things and situations we have no control over. Allow God to work in such situations and wait for the results. EXCUSES CAN STEAL OUR LIFE : All that was viewed as a reason yesterday is looked upon as an excuse today. Excuses can get uncontrollable and reach a stage where no one cares about the excuses used anymore. There was a time when at school you could get away with an excuse like, your dog chewed up your homework! But these excuses don’t go very far. Nicholas James Vujicic (or just ‘Nick’) is an excellent example of a ‘no excuse man.’ ‘Nick’ was born with Tetra-Amelia syndrome, a rare disorder characterized by the absence of four limbs, but overcame his disability to become Australia’s most popular Christian evangelist and motivational speaker. As a child Nick recalls how he struggled mentally, emotionally and physically in the process of coming to terms with his disability till the age of seventeen when he was finally able to start his own non-profit organization called, ‘Life without Limbs’. In the course of finding hope and meaning in life, he came to believe that God was big enough to overcome any disability and could use any heart willing to do
his work. The Bible is full of people who gave God excuses - from Adam and Eve, who gave the first excuses, to Jonah. We can name many more such characters in the Bible, but God in His own sovereign way dealt with each of them and used them. If all you can do is crawl, then quit the excuses, start crawling and move on! DO WHAT YOU CAN: Theodore Roosevelt, the twenty-sixth President of the United States, once said, “Do what you can, with what you have, where you are.” Achievement is not important; attempting is. Despite being undereducated, underfunded and under-estimated, English Baptist Missionary William Carey, who is called the “Father of Modern Missions,” had everything going against him. His wife Dorothy suffered from a mental illness in the early stages of their ministry in India, but he still went a step further and said, “Expect great things from God; Attempt great things for God.” Carey attempted his mission work against all odds and his ministry literally transformed India. You may not become world famous or spectacular like William Carey, but that shouldn’t hinder you from doing what you can. Leave it to God to see and reward. BE PATIENT: You may not belong to the ‘rush-rush, achieve-now’ crowd; you may be a late bloomer, but that’s alright with God. Many great leaders have lost precious years in prison in the prime of their youth when they could have done so much. Black Civil Rights leader, Nelson Mandela spent twenty seven grueling years in the notorious Robben Island penitentiary before he was elected president. According to his autobiography, published in 1974, before Harland Sanders became the world-famous Colonel, he was a sixth-grade dropout, a farmhand, an army mule-tender, a locomotive fireman, a railroad worker, an aspiring lawyer, an insurance salesman, a ferryboat entrepreneur, a tyre salesman, an amateur obstetrician, an (unsuccessful) political candidate, a gas station operator, a motel operator and finally, a restaurateur before he became famous for his secret recipe for fried chicken at the age of 65. Not bad for a man who started from scratch at an age when most people retire. Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC) has 24,000 locations globally in 136 countries as of December 2018 and generates 26.2 billion dollars! The Bible too contains examples of late bloomers, like Caleb, who wanted to climb a mountain at the age of 85! Don’t give up because of your age, stage or your past failures. If you could not make it last year, you still have time to make another attempt this year. Let’s make a new beginning. You can make it with God’s help, for with God everything is possible. Dr. Jose T Nithi, Managing Editor of Christian magazine Forerunner. (This is an excerpt from His book, Kaleidoscope, an inspirational, motivational, Christian self-help book)
In most cases, these spiritual pursuits involved family too. We had more time to interact with and take guidance from our elders and transfer it to our kids and clarify their doubts about our faith. All this helped us to establish a stronger bond with our elders, youngsters and kids; besides also providing them an opportunity to grow spiritually or study matters related to their faith. And the end result was a healthy and stronger family both physically and spiritually. In addition, the pandemic also forced many to adopt healthy habits. Surveys carried out in many European nations reveal that a vast percentage of people are now in favour of travelling by cycle or walk for their daily commute to the office, instead of using the public transport. Similarly, the “stay at or near home” culture has led to a boom in online shopping and home deliveries is likely to stay, with 58% of shoppers in the UK determined to continue their support to local groceries and food stores. Human Migration The lockdown and its aftermath also showed us pictures which left the whole nation and the world aghast - the pictures of a vast multitude of ordinary Indians fleeing the large metropolises, in particular Delhi, leading to many unanswered questions about the shape in which our country has transformed into.
M
The ordinary Indian citizen was forced to ponder why these migrant and poor labourers and their families decided to flee the cities? As the end result of an announcement which put the whole country into an unexpected lockdown, without any background preparation on how to manage the emerging chaos resulting out of it, or it was due to our collective apathy towards those who are less fortunate than us. However, the exodus also bought the indomitable and collective spirit of the Indians to the fore. Many social organisations and individuals rising to the challenge, started community kitchens, helping those who were stranded or those were not able to get two square meals a day. Cleanliness in 2020 In addition the pandemic and its deadly effects also brought new words like quarantine, lockdown, sanitisation etc. into the lexicon of every common Indian. People, who had no regard for their own cleanliness, awoke to the harsh realities and started practicing what the government was trying very hard to instil in them through its ‘Swatch Bharat’ campaign. Pandemics don’t always trigger social unrest, but sometimes they can, by throwing into question the very inequalities that caused them. That’s because they hit the poor hardest – those in low-paid or unstable employ-
ment, who live in crowded accommodation, have underlying health issues, and for them healthcare is always less affordable or less accessible. This was true in the past and remains so today. In reality, Corona also challenged the basic foundation of both the capitalist and socialist worlds. Any easy answer, to the resultant chaos and apathy would be a bit difficult to find, but it may force our politicians and policy makers to restrategies the priorities and solutions, adopting a more humane approach. Though that also seems much fanciful to desire. Let’s hope that in 2021, the aftermath of the pandemic will lessen and our politicians and rulers will find new more humane practices to rule. Interestingly, the fifth edition of Swiggy’s annual StatEATistics analysis for 2020 shows that the top favourite food item on Swiggy is biryani, vegetarian and non-vegetarian equally. Customers ordered biryani more than once every second in 2020. However, for every veg biryani, there were six orders for chicken biryani. The top most favourite dishes on the food App included Paneer Butter Masala, Masala Dosa, Chicken Fried Rice, and Mutton Biryani. Also, more than 200,000 panipuri were ordered during the lockdown. Asad Mirza, New Delhi
Work, wealth and welfare
ercifully, the year 2020 is coming to an end. Every country is bruised, some are battered. Covid-19 has not gone away, but it is less threatening, and the vaccines that are being distributed give us hope. As far as India is concerned, our economy is battered and the lives of millions of people (especially the migrants and those who lost their regular jobs) have been severely bruised. Further, the divisive and polarising utterances of, among others, Mr Amit Shah and Mr Adityanath have torn the social fabric asunder. The abiding lesson of 2020 is that a nation will suffer if there is a decline in three measures — work, wealth and welfare. I wish to devote this year-end column to reflect on this lesson. Work: Ultimately, it is work that distinguishes one human from another. There are many thousands who do not have to work, yet they do, because work is pleasurable, enhances esteem, earns rewards and determines one’s standing among peers and in the societyat-large. At the other end, there are millions who need to work, but cannot find work; they are the unemployed. By last count, the unemployment rate in India was 8.7 per cent (CMIE, December 22, 2020). In between, there are people who do not wish to join the work force and there are people who are home workers who are not counted as part of the work force. Unemployment is always a huge challenge in a developing country like India. The rapid decline in growth rates (2018-19 and 2019-20) triggered the rise in unemployment, the pandemic made it worse and the unplanned lockdowns exacerbated the situation. At its peak, 130 million persons lost their jobs or livelihoods. Jobs have come back slowly, but some jobs have disappeared permanently. The figures speak for themselves (see Table). Wealth: The most easily understood measure of a nation’s wealth is the Gross Domestic Product. If the GDP grows, wealth is enhanced, and the average share of a citizen in the pie (per capita income) is larger. I have taken the simplest measure: GDP in constant prices. Look at the slow growth rates after 2017-18 and look at the destruction of wealth in 2020-21 (see Table). Not at all encouraging for a developing country that has many millions
who are poor. Is it any wonder that among the people there is pessimism about the future? Welfare: A combination of unemployment and slow (or negative) growth will impact welfare. My concern is not economic welfare alone. Food, healthcare and social security are indeed important, but welfare goes beyond material and tangible goods and services. Ask yourself some questions: Do people think they are a free people? Do they have a heightened sense of fear? Are people afraid that presumably independent agencies like the CBI, ED, Income Tax Department, NCB and NIA will hound and persecute them? Are people confident that the courts of law are accessible and will render swift justice? Can two young people be friends, go out together, fall in love and marry? Can one, according to her choice, eat, wear clothes, speak, write and associate with other people? ‘Welfare’ is the sum of these things. Some indicators where India stands, in relative terms, are the Human Development Index, Index of Freedom, Press Freedom etc (see Table). Overall, there is a decline. Three Abiding Images: In a democracy, good or bad, the cause being external factors or internal developments, the government must bear responsibility. The government may be well-intentioned, get the best available advice or may have committed unintended errors, but the buck stops with
the government. Good or bad, governments must be changed. That is why, in many countries, there are term limits on Presidents and Prime Ministers. A sense of permanence is the cause of the beginning of a downfall. As we end the year, the three abiding images of 2020 are: 1. The millions of migrants — tired, hungry and sick — trudging hundreds of kilometers along highways and railway tracks with their meager belongings to reach what they believed was home. 2. The long and peaceful protests — first at Shaheen Bagh and now on the borders of Delhi — demanding that the government hear them and heed their appeals for justice. 3. The resounding vote in the Kashmir Valley comprehensively rejecting the unconstitutional coup staged by the government on August 5, 2019. In sum, Work, Wealth and Welfare suffered in 2020, making it a forgettable year. I urge you, however, paraphrasing George Santayana, never to forget 2020 so that we may never repeat 2020. Instead, be proud, fearless and freedomloving Indians. I wish you a happy, healthy and prosperous 2021. Reader’s Post Sir,
A Spring of Hope
We find ourselves in the same position as the year before with expectations and yearning for a blessed year. Little did we know we would find ourselves taken aback after we were at a worldwide standstill. But the year whose hurdles, we were unbeknownst to, has finally reached an impasse. An impasse where we, as individuals who strive to thrive, need to decide what we take away from a time lapse brimming with pathogens, communal animosity and isolation. In hindsight, we can take away a sense of victory from having been able to survive the pandemic and hope to believe that there are better things to come as a universal reaction to our barter of kindness. The faith in our fraternity, the patience in our progress and the crescendo of our kindness will find a way to prevail jumping over what may come. Fate and destiny are a funny duo and they sure do like to roll the unpredictable dice. Every crisis is a crisp leaf that has fallen from the tree of our life’s journey, but fear not, for there is a spring of prosperity beyond this autumn of uncertainty. Blessed New Year. through video conferencing, Modi said the number of new coronavirus cases are decreasing in the country. “I used to say ‘jab tak davai nahi dhilai nahi’ but now our mantra for 2021 should be: Davai bhi, kadaai bhi (yes to medicine and yes to caution),” Modi said. Preparations are in last stages for vaccination programme against COVID-19 in the country, Modi said, adding people will be given doses of vaccine manufactured in India. India has turned into the nerve-centre of global health, Modi said. “We are working on mission mode to improve medical education in India. After the formation of National Medical Commission, the quality and quantity of health education will improve,” he added. Over Rs 30,000 crore of poor people’s money has been saved due to the Ayushman Bharat Yojana, Modi said. “Jan Ausadhi Kendras are also a friend of poor people during illness. Over 7,000 such kendras all over the country provide 90 per cent cheaper medicines to people. Over 3.5 lakh poor patients use these kendras on a daily basis,” he said.

Farmers’ protest: Several Delhi border points remain closed
NEW DELHI/ AHMEDABAD, DEC 31 (IANS/ PTI): Emphasising on improved healthcare facilities, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday said that preparations were in full swing across the country to make coronavirus vaccine available to all. After laying the foundation stone of a new All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Gujarat’s Rajkot via videoconference, Modi said: “In 2020, there was a question mark from all sides due to Covid19 pandemic. But 2021 is coming with the hope of treatment of Covid-19.” He said that he was hopeful that the way in which India fought unitedly against the infection, it would similarly work hard to make the vaccination programme successful. The Prime Minister said that when India faced any problem, the entire nation united to help each other. “The way in which people took proper steps is the reason why we are in good condition even amid the pandemic, despite a 1.3 billion population. More than one crore people have fought the pandemic and won. India’s record is much
better than other countries in fight against Covid-19,” he said. He said that the number of infections in India were going down. Pointing out that ‘health is wealth’, Modi said: “This year taught us this maxim. When there is any attack on health, it affects the family and the entire society comes in its grip.” The Prime Minister also said that it was time to remember on the last day of the outgoing year the frontline warriors who safeguarded people while risking their lives. “I pay my humble tributes to all frontline warriors who lost their lives in the line of duty,” Modi said, adding that the country also paid tributes to scientists, workers, doctors involved in the fight against Covid-19 and those working tirelessly for developing a vaccine for coronavirus. “In the last six years, we’ve started work on 10

The night curfew will be imposed from 11 pm on December 31 to 6 am on January 1, and again from 11 pm on January 1 to 6 am on January 2, said an order issued on Wednesday by Vijay Dev, Delhi Chief Secretary and chairman of the Executive Committee of Delhi Disaster Management Authority (DDMA). It stated that not more than five people will be allowed to assemble at public places in Delhi during night curfew to avoid large gatherings in view of COVID-19. NEW DELHI, DEC 31 (PTI): Thousands of farmers stayed put at their protest venues near Delhi’s border on Thursday as their talks with the government remained deadlocked over the main contentious issues of the repeal of three farm laws and a legal guarantee for MSP. The government and farm unions had reached some common ground on Wednesday to resolve protesting farmers’ concerns over rise in power tariff and penalties for stubble burning. After the sixth round of negotiations between three union ministers and a 41-member representative group of thousands of farmers protesting on Delhi borders, Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar had said at least 50 per cent resolution has been reached with mutual agreement on two out of four items on the agenda and discussions would continue on the remaining two on January 4. Braving the winter chill, farmers, mainly from Punjab and Haryana, are protesting at various borders of the national capital for more than a month against
these three new laws. Security remained tight at the Delhi borders with hundreds of personnel deployed at Singhu, Ghazipur and Tikri border points where the farmers have been camping. The protests have also led to traffic congestion forcing police to divert vehicular movement. Taking to Twitter on Thursday, the Delhi Traffic Police alerted commuters about the routes that remained closed owing to the agitation and suggested them to take alternative roads. “Tikri, Dhansa Borders are closed for any Traffic Movement. Jhatikara Borders is open only for LMV (Cars/ Light Motor Vehicles), two wheelers and pedestrian movement,” it tweeted.“The Chilla and Ghazipur Borders are closed for traffic coming from Noida & Ghaziabad to Delhi because of farmer protests. Please take alternate route for coming to Delhi via Anand Vihar, DND, Apsara, Bhopra & Loni Borders. “Singhu, Auchandi, Piau Maniyari, Saboli & Mangesh borders closed. Please take alternate route via Lampur Safiabad, Palla
& Singhu school toll tax borders.Traffic has been diverted from Mukarba and GTK road. Please avoid Outer Ring Road, GTK Road & NH-44,” they tweeted. “Available Open Borders to Haryana are Jharoda (Only Single Carriageway/ Road), Daurala, Kapashera, Badusarai, Rajokri NH-8, Bijwasan/Bajghera, Palam Vihar and Dundahera Borders,” the Delhi Traffic Police said in a tweet. Enacted in September, the three farm laws have been projected by the central government as major reforms in the agriculture sector that will remove the middleman and allow farmers to sell their produce anywhere in the country. However, the protesting farmers have expressed apprehension that the new laws would pave the way for eliminating the safety cushion of MSP and do away with the mandi system, leaving them at the mercy of big corporates. The government has repeatedly asserted that the MSP and mandi systems will stay and has accused the Opposition of misleading the farmers.

the order said. The Ministry of Home Affairs in its advisory on December 28 had advised states and Union Territories that they can impose local restrictions, including night curfew, based on their assessment of the situation to contain the spread of COVID-19. All the district magistrates and deputy commissioners of police in Delhi will ensure strict compliance
of the night curfew restriction. A total of 33 people, including 20 UK returnees and their contacts, all of whom have tested positive for the coronavirus, are admitted to a special ward at the Lok Nayak Jai Prakash Narayan Hospital (LNJP) in the national capital. Beijing, Dec 31 (AP): China accused the US of staging a show of force by sailing two Navy warships through the Taiwan Strait on Thursday morning. The Navy said the Arleigh Burke-class guided missile destroyers USS John S. McCain and USS Curtis Wilbur “conducted a routine Taiwan Strait transit” in accordance with international law. Their movement “demonstrates the US commitment to a free and open Indo-Pacific,” the Navy said in a statement on its website. China’s Defence Ministry called the move a “show of force” and a provocation that “sent the wrong signal to the Taiwan independence forces and seriously endangered peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait area.”
“We firmly oppose this,” the ministry said in a statement on its official microblog, adding that it monitored the ships’ passage from the air and sea. “The Chinese People’s Liberation Army at all times maintains a high level of alert and can respond at any time to any threat or provocation and resolutely defend national sovereignty and territorial integrity.” While China claims Taiwan as its own territory, the busy Taiwan Strait is generally considered an international waterway. China fiercely opposes any signal of US military support for Taiwan, a selfgoverning republic that relies on Washington for defensive weapons and political backing in the face of Chinese threats to annex the island by force.

Dubai, Dec 31 (IANS): India’s stand-in skipper Ajinkya Rahane has moved to No. 6 in ICC world rankings for Test batsmen, jumping five places thanks to his century in the second Test against Australia at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. New Zealand captain Kane Williamson jumped two places to end 2020 as the world’s top-ranked batsman even as Steve Smith
slipped two places to third after failures in the first two Tests against India. Virat Kohli, on paternity leave in India, retained his second spot. Williamson scored a century against Pakistan in the first Test at Mount Maunganui this week as his team defeated the visitors by 101 runs. The effort earned him man-of-thematch award and valuable
points. This is the first time the Kiwi skipper has moved to the top of the world Test batting rankings since 2015. Smith and Kohli have occupied the top spot over the last five years. Williamson has 890 rating points while Kohli (879) and Smith (877) are separated by a margin of just two points. Australia batsman

Hamilton knighted by QE-II
Lo n d o n, D e c 3 1 (Agencies): Seven-time Formula One champion Lewis Hamilton officially became a “Sir” on Wednesday after Queen Elizabeth II knighted him. The honor was bestowed upon him as part of the New Year’s honors list. Hamilton received his knighthood alongside British performers, politicians, public servants and the unsung heroes who helped to combat the spread of coronavirus, treat it in patients around the country and limit its impact. The 35-year-old driver tied Michael Schumacher’s record for most F1 titles last month with his seventh. It is believed that were it not for his tax issues, he would have received his knighthood even sooner. In 2017, news broke that he avoided paying over $4 million in taxes on a private jet that was registered to tax haven the Isle of Man. He also lives in the low-tax country

L o n d o n, D e c 3 1 (AFP): Liverpool squandered the chance to open up a five-point lead at the top of the Premier League in the final English top-flight match of 2020 after being held to a goalless draw by Newcastle on Wednesday. The 0-0 stalemate at St James’ Park means the champions go into the New Year with a threepoint lead over Manchester United, having played a game more. But they will rue their missed chances in a match in which they enjoyed nearly three-quarters of possession. Mohamed Salah -- top of the Premier League goalscoring charts with 13 goals -- missed the target either side of halftime with just goalkeeper Karl Darlow to beat and strike-partner Roberto Firmino saw two headers superbly saved. Three days after lowly West Brom snatched a point at Anfield, Jurgen Klopp’s men, who have now won only two of their eight league away games this season, were frustrated once again, although it took a late goal-line clearance from Fabian Schar and Darlow’s brilliance to
