they will hold their own internal consultations on Thursday to decide on the Centre’s new proposal. During the internal meeting, which lasted for over four hours, the farmers also asserted that they “will not go back to their homes until their demand to repeal the three contentious farm laws is accepted by the government”. “The SKM pays homage to the 143 farmers who have been martyred in this movement so far. These companions are separated from us while fighting this mass movement. Their sacrifice will not go in vain and we will not go back without the repealing of these farm laws,” the statement said.
Tractor rally: Farmers-police meet inconclusive
The second round of meeting between the police and farmer unions regarding the proposed January 26 tractor rally by them remained inconclusive on Thursday as the farmers stuck to their demand of taking out the rally on Delhi’s busy Outer Ring Road. Taking to reporters after the meeting, Swaraj Abhiyan leader Yogendra Yadav said the police wanted the farmer leaders to take out their tractor rally outside the national capital. “We will do our parade peacefully inside Delhi. They wanted us to hold the tractor rally outside Delhi, which is not possible,” Yadav, who is actively participating in the ongoing agitation against the Centre’s new farm laws, said. Sources said police officers tried to convince the protesting farm unions to hold their tractor rally on the Kundli-Manesar-Palwal (KMP) Expressway instead of the Outer Ring Road, but in vain. Tomar meets Amit Shah: A day before the government’s crucial 11th round of talks with protesting farmers, Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar on Thursday night met senior BJP leader and Home Minister Amit Shah, sources said.

DIMAPUR, JAN 21 (NPN): Altogether 38 pigs out of 835 that arrived Nagaland in four-decker truck from Haryana on Thursday were found dead and disposed off in Dimapur. According to Dimapur District Veterinary Hospital in-charge Dr KN Zubemo Humtsoe, the pigs died due to stress, exertion and suffocation and that no other illness were detected, adding that there was even travel
fitness certificate from a veterinarian in Haryana as it was purchased from organised farm. The truck carrying the pigs took about 10 days to reach Nagaland through Dillai gate, Dimapur, he added. He said it took about 12 hours for the officials to inspect every pig during which 38 dead carcasses were found on inspection. But since there was no proper facility at Dillai, the trucks were taken to supplier’s stock yard at Sovima
village. And from morning till around 10 p.m., every pig was screened for any illness etc. Humtsoe claimed that the carcasses were then punctured, applied phenyl and disposed at a private land adhering to all safety guidelines. Referring to some people taking a photo of the carcasses and circulating it on social media, Humtsoe clarified that the carcasses were disposal buried in the presence of Chumukedima OC, DMC officials, consignee and other officials. Rest of the pigs would be quarantined for 10 days under veterinary department’s supervision and cleared for public consumption only after that, he added. He also informed that another consignment of 500-600 pigs were expected to arrive Nagaland. Humtsoe assured that the department would take all necessary steps to screen the pigs for public safety.
Supreme Cour t-appointed panel on the new agri laws on Thursday started its consultation process and interacted with 10 farmer organisations from eight states, including Uttar Pradesh. The apex court had on January 11 stayed the implementation of the three laws, against which farmers are protesting at Delhi borders for nearly two months now, till further orders and appointed a fourmember panel to resolve the impasse.
‘Agitation caused loss of Rs 50k crore’
Traders’ body CAIT Thursday said the ongoing farmers’ agitation has caused a business loss of nearly Rs 50,000 crore. Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT) secretary-general Praveen Khandelwal said the government’s fresh proposal to keep farm laws in abeyance for one-and-a-half years and constitute a joint committee with farmer leaders “is quite justified and reasonable which indicates its willingness to resolve the crisis”.
PM, CMs to take COVID-19 jab in phase-II NEW DELHI, JAN 21 (AGENCIES): Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be vaccinated in the second phase of Covid inoculation drive, sources said today. All chief ministers, MPs and MLAs above 50 will also receive vaccines. Modi, in his video conference with CMs just before the launch of nationwide drive, said politicians should not jump the queue for vaccination, as first round was for frontline workers, government sources noted. “In the same vein, he said politicians would get their turn in the second phase when senior citizens will be vaccinated,” government official said. It is unclear whether the PM will take Covishield or Covaxin. Modi getting the jab could go a long way in addressing concerns of vaccine sceptics.

DIMAPUR, JAN 21 (NPN): Nagaland chief minister Neiphiu Rio highlighted the need for more public recreational centres in Nagaland where people can spend time with family and friends to make people more civilised through changing their mindset. Speaking at the inauguration of Public Recreational Centre (PRC) at Green Park, State Horticulture Nursery (SHN) here on Thursday, Rio also stressed on the need to have a “healthy society” and suggested opening of more parks for the benefit of society. which has become “concrete jungle”, replete with congestion and pollution. He hoped the centre would help people in unwinding and rejuvenating themselves. Rio proposed that Green Park should not be confined for the department alone, but should also be opened to public for recreational activities, jogging and even for small meetings and get-togethers. He said opening of such recreational centres would make a difference to the Naga society. Rio informed the gathering about his decision to open one public park each at Dimapur and Chümoukedima. He also informed that three places in Kohima would be converted into public parks at- Old Zoo in
Ministers Hill , Nagaland University Campus at Meriema and Thizama Fishery Complex. In a bid to encourage local entrepreneurs to setup markets in their respective localities, Rio also stressed on the need to open more community-centric markets which would not only make it convenient for shoppers but also ease the congestions in the main town areas. For this, he asked deputy commissioners, administrative officials and village leaders to identify areas to setup local market places for essential commodities in their respective jurisdictions and also to have common facilities for weddings and meetings etc. (Cont’d on p-7)

Smoke billows out after a massive fire broke out at the Serum Institute of India, in Pune, Thursday (PTI)
PUNE, JAN 21 (PTI): Five men died after a fire broke out in a five-storeyed underconstruction building in the Serum Institute of India’s Manjari premises in Pune on Thursday, police said. Manjari facility is where the Covishield vaccine used in the nationwide inoculation drive against the pandemic is made. The building where fire broke out is one km from the Cov-
ishield vaccine manufacturing unit, sources said. “I would like to reassure all governments & the public that there would be no loss of #COVISHIELD production due to multiple production buildings that I had kept in reserve to deal with such contingencies at @SerumInstIndia,” Poonawalla tweeted. Mayor Murlidhar Mohol said fire officials recovered the five bodies during the cooling operation. Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar said the state government has ordered a probe into the fire. IMA announces relay hunger strike from Feb 1 Over 1 mn healthcare workers inoculated NEW DELHI, JAN 21 (PTI): The Indian Medical Association (IMA) on Thursday announced a panIndia relay hunger strike of doctors starting February 1, in protest against a notification issued by the Central Council of Indian Medicine (CCIM) that authorises post-graduate practitioners in specified streams of Ayurveda to perform general surgical procedures, stating that it will lead to “mixopathy”. The IMA is giving immediate directives to all members across the country to launch the “Save Healthcare India Movement”, the doctors’ body said in a statement. Under the campaign, the IMA will launch a massive awareness drive across the country as this is a clear threat to the safety of healthcare of people. Doctors will take turns
to sit on the hunger strike 24x7 from February 1 and the IMA will release posters and banners to raise awareness on the issue across the country, the statement said. “All IMA members shall update their Members of Parliament and MLAs regarding the true picture of the notification and the integration policy. The IMA will also give its representations to all state governments. Under this movement, all NGOs will be updated about the core issues,” it added. Besides, all IMA members will write and convey their feelings to the prime minister, the association said. Re presentatives of the IMA shall visit various places across the country to raise awareness among the public and apprise various associations from different countries of this “unscientific” notification, it said,
adding that the global voice of modern medicine shall echo the feelings of the Indian Medical Association and its members. The IMA has condemned the notification issued by the CCIM, a statutory body under the AYUSH Ministry, authorising post-graduate practitioners in specified streams of Ayurveda to be trained to perform surgical procedures such as excisions of benign tumours, amputation of gangrene, nasal and cataract operations. The doctors’ body further said the recent policy tilt, as evidenced in the medical pluralism advocated by the National Education Policy 2020 and the four committees of NITI AAYOG for officially integrating the systems of medicine in medical education, practice, public health and administration as well
as research ostensibly for a “One Nation, One System” policy, will “ring the death knell of all systems of medicine as a whole”. “The IMA respects all streams of healthcare. We object mixing of the streams as it is unsafe and unscientific...one doctor cannot give all systems of medicine to one patient. Mixing the Pathies and providing substandard healthcare is definitely wrong. “The IMA demands withdrawal of the CCIM order and dissolution of the NITI AAYOG committees for integration. The IMA appeals to the government to consider the sensitivity of the medical fraternity and take appropriate steps. The IMA will be constrained to intensify the agitation until the steps towards implementing mixopathy are abandoned,” it said.

The two buses were launched under the Integrated Cooperative Development Project (ICDP), a scheme under National Cooperative Corporation (NCDC) where an area development approach is adopted for development of cooperatives. During the launching programme, Assistant Registrar of Cooperative Societies (ARCS), Imsunungsang in the keynote address disclosed that NCDC had sanctioned an outlay of Rs 5,209.98 lakhs in the month of January, 2018, for implementation of ICDP in five districts of Nagaland including Kohima, Tuensang, Longleng, Kiphire and Peren. He said the department started an initiative, “One village one society” wherein one member from

each household in a village was enrolled with the objective to uplift their economic condition. Adding that the department came up with this idea of CMB during the formulation of ICDP, after observing the plight faced by villagers to dispose off their produces profitably or transport essential commodities from the markets due to lack of transportation, Imsunungsang said. He added that these CMBs were designed by
the department with a focus on the carrying capacity where 60 percent will be for passengers and 40 percent for goods and produces. On these buses all kinds of farm produces including cereal, grains, tubers, vegetables, small and medium livestocks like pigs, goats, poultry can be transported while in the event of lesser goods, the sitting capacity of 17 passengers can be rearranged to accommodate more
AH&VS Kohima informs on CSF
Dimapur: Director of AH&VS, Dr. Budhi Lama has informed piggery farmers to get their pigs (preferably breeding stock) vaccinated against Classical Swine Fever (CSF) as prevention before the onset of summer from the nearest veterinary institutes since this disease is endemic in Nagaland. Further, all chief veterinary officers have been requested to
collect the vaccination cost, CSF vaccine (1st phase) procured under CSF-CP – 2019-20 (CSS 90%) and CSF vaccine (2nd phase) procured under state plan2019-20 from the directorate office during working hours. Vaccination cost may be utilized for hiring of vehicle, procurement of vaccination tools, cottons, antiseptics, contingencies,
working lunch etc. UC and expenditure statement should be submitted to directorate office for record and vaccination may be carried out in “ring or cluster” depending on the “occurrence and epidemiological” pattern of the disease in respective district. Due importance should be given in the border areas and stock routes.
than 23. One additional benefit of these CMBs would be that it can be used as “Market on wheels” where farmers can sell their produces without alighting from it, ARCS informed. A representative from Pang village under Tuensang district, while thanking the department said, the initiative was a dream come true for their farmers as they had been eagerly waiting for the same. He further disclosed
that from their village it took 2 days to reach the state capital Kohima and whether seated or standing, a villager would have to pay a hefty sum of Rs 1,000 as fare just to reach Tuensang town and therefore this new initiative would ease their travelling plights tremendously. Another person, representing Tamlu village under Longleng district, thanked the department for the initiative and said they faced a lot of problems because there was only one NST reaching the village from Dimapur. He added that there was very little means of transport from the village and therefore with the new initiative, the department had come to the rescue of the village farmers at the right time. E a r l i e r, Re g i s t r a r of Cooperative Societies (RCS), Nagaland, Tiyongmeren Jamir proposed the welcome address and later handed over the vehicle keys and documents to the two beneficiary villages. The launching programme was chaired by deputy RCS, Bokato Hesso.

DIMAPUR: Lotha Students’ Union (LSU), Wokha has expressed serious concern over the “unsatisfactory ATM service” within its jurisdiction. In a press release, LSU president, Ashanthung Humtsoe and assistant general secretary, B Mhajan Tsopoe stated that it was unfortunate to notice how many of the ATM booths were either out of service or out of cash. LSU pointed out that this compels consumers to stand in queue without maintaining social distancing at the ATM booth where cash was available. LSU stressed that ATM service was a basic necessity for all and should not be ignored at any cost as consumers were paying service charge. With academic admissions and other academic related activities going on, the LSU stated that students’ activities should not be hampered while accessing ATM service. It also called upon the concerned authority that the union would be compelled to initiate serious steps if the authority turned deaf ears towards the issue. Further, it appealed to the general public to cooperate and maintain social distancing as well as to be civic while accessing ATM service.

PM to allot ‘patta’ to over 1 L indigenous people in Assam
Guwahati, Jan 21 (PTI): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday will launch a special programme of the Assam government to distribute land ‘patta’ or land allotment certificates to over one lakh landless indigenous people. This is for the first time since independence that such a large number of people will be given ‘patta’ in Assam in one go. “The prime minister will formally launch the distribution of land ‘patta’ to more than one lakh indigenous people who have been living uncertain lives for decades. No government in Assam has ever took such a people-friendly initiative in the past,” Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal told PTI. The event will be held at Jerenga Pothar in Sivasagar district, a historical place connected with Assam’s erstwhile Ahom kingdom. Sonowal said many government land, tribal blocks were encroached by suspected illegal immigrants and his government took the initiative to evict them and provide the land to the indigenous people -- most of them are tribals, OBCs and ex-tea garden labourers. “The successive Congress governments ignored the pleas of the local people to give the land rights as a result the people have been
Narendra Modi living a life of constant fear. We will end this uncertainty and the prime minister will begin this noble process,” he said. Sonowal said to fulfil people’s aspirations, the BJP-led government took this initiative to safeguard ‘jati, mati and bheti (community, land and roots). “It is an irony that due to the previous government’s lackadaisical approach and indifferent attitude, the landless indigenous people were deprived of their rights for long 70 years. They even had to go through intense sufferings to safeguard their base,” he said. An official said because of the uncontrolled migration from across the border, the demography of the state, especially the lower Assam region had gone through unprecedented changes. “The phenomenon snowballed into a grave problem of changing the demographic profile in some districts of the state. Some
of the lower Assam districts have borne the brunt of implosion of doubtful citizens which were once dominated by indigenous communities,” the official said. To reverse this trend, it became imperative for the present state government to ensure granting of land to the indigenous land less families, the official said. The Sonowal government has already allotted land ‘patta’ to more than one lakh landless indigenous families. The state government will allot a total of 2,28,160 land ‘pattas’ in just 4.5 years and the prime minister will initiate the beginning of allotting pattas to 1.06 lakh people on January 23 at the historic Jerenga Pothar in Sivasagar, another official said. The state government even took steps in freeing the encroachments from Kaziranga National Park and ‘Xatras’ (Vaishnavite monasteries). As a result, rhino poaching has come down to almost zero. The Jerenga Pothar is where the great Sati Jaimati showed her grit and patriotism and the government’s decision of handing over of land pattas to the local indigenous families assume great importance, the official said. Assam had 5.75 lakh landless families in 2016.
‘Chinese village’: AAPSU demands counter-measures ITA NAG A R , JA N 2 1 (PTI): The All Arunachal Pradesh Students’ Union (AAPSU) on Thursday said it has taken serious note of China reportedly establishing a village in Upper Subansiri district in the northeastern state and demanded that the Centre initiates appropriate countermeasures to check Beijing’s “expansionist” move. Condemning China’s “provocative” move, the apex students’ body of the state alleged that the Centre’s “lethargic and noncommittal” approach other than mere lip service visa-vis Chinese antics is emboldening the neighbouring country to carry out their “expansionist design”. “Chinese claim over our state has given rise to myriad problems notably the stapled visa issue and Siang river imbroglio which still remains inconclusive till date despite the union bringing up the issue at the highest level several times,” AAPSU chief Hawa Bagang said in a statement. If the nation calls for duty, the youths are ready to stand up even with arms to defend the country, he said. The AAPSU also urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to take the happenings in the frontier state seriously not only in terms of military deployment but also match with China in terms of infrastructure development and road connectivity.

50th Statehood Day of Manipur celebrated in Imphal on Thursday. (NP) and hill regions, good relations amongst different communities residing in the state and positive change in the mindset of the people, the state became an attraction in the eye of everyone in the country, he claimed. Singh further observed that Manipur would be one of the best states in the country if everyone, regardless of their position, worked with sincerity and transparency and stood together against the evil of corruption. Expressing that the state had now come up with a trend of thanksgiving and appreciation to any development work being taken up, he appealed to the public to come up with positive suggestions and constructive criticism which are very necessary for a democracy. Informing that the
oundation stone for construction of a water amusement park had been laid at Imphal East during December last year, he said that such spaces are necessary for everyone to spend their leisure time and live a better life. Apart from this, the state government had obtained approval to construct children parks in seven different districts including Chandel, Churachandpur, Jiribam, Kangpokpi, Senapati, Tamenglong and Ukhrul. Construction of 47 primary health sub-centres at rural and hill areas under Minority Department were also in the pipeline, he added. He then appealed to every state government employee to render their services with commitment and
contribute more in making Manipur a successful state. During the celebration, the chief minister also presented a cheque of five lakh rupees to the sister of late Major Laishram Jyotin Singh under Major Jyotin Bravery Award. It may be mentioned that the state government had earlier planned to celebrate the statehood day with large arrangements as this year marks the golden jubilee of the attainment of statehood. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic the state cabinet had decided to do away with the plan and to celebrate it with restriction. Ministers, MLAs, chief secretary, DGP, top civil and police officials also attended the function among others.
Gauhati HC dismisses petition challenging Govt committed to resolve Oil firm staff urge Assam, Bihar CMs to stay order on blocking AGP resolutions boundary issue: M’laya CM secure release of abducted employees
Guwahati, Jan 21 (PTI): The Gauhati High Court has dismissed a petition challenging a stay order against a lower court directive blocking all resolutions of Asom Gana Parishad’s latest general body meeting, held in defiance of instructions from a civil judge. In a recent judgment, Justice Kalyan Rai Surana dismissed the petition, stating that the issues raised “appears to be only academic”. The revision plea was jointly filed by AGP’s Guwahati City Committee president Jiten Deka, working president Hemen Lahkar and secretary Gi-
rin Talukdar, who were removed from their posts after they had opposed the Citizenship (Amendment) Act in 2019. The petition was filed against AGP president Atul Bora, working president Keshab Mahanta and senior leader Phani Bhushan Choudhury all ministers in the BJP-led state government. It also included five other senior leaders as respondents in the case. When contacted, Talukdar said the high court has dismissed only the review petition and the original case will continue in the lower court. On October 7 last year, the Additional District
Judge of Kamrup Metropolitan Utpal Rajkhowa had stayed the order issued by the Civil Judge (Senior Division) Shakti Sharma. Sharma had on September 5 stayed all resolutions, including election of party president, of AGP that were adopted at a general body meeting on August 27. On August 26, the lower court had ordered the AGP not to hold its ‘Kendriya Sadharan Parishad’ meet on the next day, citing violation of the party’s constitution and COVID-19 guidelines, and asked to maintain “status quo” till the next date, which was fixed as November 19.
Shillong, Jan 21: The Meghalaya Government is committed to finding a lasting solution to the long pending boundary issue with neighbouring Assam, chief minister Conrad Sangma assured on Thursday. Speaking to journalists on the sidelines of a function observing the 49th Meghalaya Statehood Day, Sangma said that the government would resume talks after Assam’s assembly elections which is likely to be held in April or May of this year. “The boundary issue has been there for a very long time. In fact, since the
beginning of the state, many discussions have taken place at different levels. Last year, I was supposed to meet the Assam Chief Minister in the month of March-April, and we had finalised to meet but then Covid happened, so we couldn’t, and now that Assam elections are around the corner, we will not be able to meet. Discussions will take place only after elections are over,” the Chief Minister said. “The Government is committed to ensure that we are able to take the discussions forward and hopefully we will find solutions in the years to come,” he said.
GUWAHATI/ITANAGAR, JAN 21 (IANS): The staff of a private gas and oil drilling company have appealed to the Chief Ministers of Assam and Bihar to secure the release from captivity of two employees of the firm who were kidnapped by militants in Arunachal Pradesh a month ago, police officials said on Thursday. Arunachal Pradesh Police chief R.P. Upadhyaya told IANS over phone from Itanagar that the militants had earlier demanded Rs 20 crore to release the two employees of the com-
pany. The security forces of Assam and Arunachal Pradesh are searching for the hostages who were abducted by the United Liberation Front of AsomIndependent (ULFA-I) on December 21 from the company’s drilling site at Diyun in southern Arunachal Pradesh’s Changlang district, bordering Myanmar and Assam. Pranab Kumar Gogoi, a drilling superintendent and Ram Kumar, a radio operator of Delhi-based Quippo Oil and Gas Infrastructure Limited, were kidnapped at gunpoint by insurgents of
ULFA-I, which is currently headed by Paresh Barua. Gogoi is a resident of Sivasagar district in Assam while Kumar hails from Khagaria district in Bihar. According to the police, in a video reportedly released by the ULFA-I on Wednesday, Gogoi and Ram Kumar are heard saying that they are now in the captivity of the ULFA-I and the National Socialist Council of Nagaland (NSCNIM) and they urged Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal and Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar to get them released.

Modi in Kolkata for Bose’s Nandigram stands divided between Mamata and Suvendu birth anniv celebrations
New Delhi, Jan 21 (PTI): Prime Minister Narendra Modi will address ‘Parakram Diwas’ celebrations in Kolkata on January 23 to commemorate the 125th birth anniversary of Subhas Chandra Bose, an iconic freedom fighter who hailed from the state. The Prime Minister’s Office said he will also distribute over one lakh land ‘pattas’ (allotment certificates) in Sivasagar, Assam on the same day. Modi’s visit to the two states assumes significance as both are headed to assembly polls in AprilMay. The BJP as well as the r uling Trinamool Congress in West Bengal have planned a number of events around Bose, often called Netaji by admirers, as they seek to woo the voters ahead of the polls. The PMO noted that the central government had recently decided to celebrate Bose’s birthday every year as ‘Parakram Diwas’ to honour and remember his indomitable spirit and selfless service
Narendra Modi to the nation. This will also help inspire people of the country, especially the youth, to act with fortitude in the face of adversity as the celebrated freedom fighter did and to infuse in them a spirit of patriotic fervour, it added. Modi will preside over the inaugural function of the celebrations at Victoria Memorial in Kolkata. A permanent exhibition and a projection mapping show on Bose will be inaugurated on the occasion. A commemorative coin and postage stamp will also be released by the prime minister, and a cultural programme “Amra Nuton Jouboneri Doot”
will also be held. Before this event, Modi will visit the National Library, Kolkata, where an international conference “Revisiting the legacy of Netaji Subhas in the 21st century” and an artists’ camp are being organised. He will interact with the artists and other participants, the PMO said. Earlier on that day, Modi will distribute 1.06 lakh land ‘pattas’ in Assam. Taking into account an urgent need to protect the land rights of indigenous people of the state, the Assam government came out with a comprehensive new land policy with a renewed emphasis on protecting their rights. The PMO added that the issuance of allotment certificates for the state’s indigenous population has been given highest priority in order to instil a sense of security amongst them. Assam had 5.75 lakh landless families in 2016. The present government has distributed 2.28 lakh land pattas since then.
NANDIGRAM (WB), JAN 21 (PTI): Two large cutouts of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and her protege-turned- rival Suvendu Adhikari adorning opposite sides of the street in Tengua bazar of Nandigram sum up the prevailing political mood of the area which is hogging national limelight following the former’s announcement of her candidature from here. The obscure Nandigram village that shook the base of mighty Left regime and became a bastion of the TMC 14 years ago, now stands divided between its favourite “Didi and Dada” amid speculations of Banerjee taking on her trusted lieutenant in the anti-land acquisition movement, Suvendu Adhikari. Though, the BJP is yet to take a call on fielding Suvendu from Nandigram which he represented in the assembly before quitting after joining BJP,the dashing leader has expressed willingness to take on the challenge and defeat Banerjee in the polls. Many locals in the cradle of change, Nandigram, were feeling ‘disenchanted and forgotten’ and yearning for another change till a few months back.
But, with the announcement of Banerjee’s candidature and Adhikari, a political heavyweight of the region, who had switched over to the BJP vowing to defeat her, has put the entire East Midnapore district, especially Nandigram,on edge. “The people of Nandigram are not very happy with the TMC and also have grievances against Mamata di as she hardly visits Nandigram. Had there been any other candidate of the TMC, the defeat would have been imminent.” But, there is a section of the people who have a soft corner for the TMC chief. “We can’t forget the tough days of the movement when she and Suvendu da were our only saviours,” Anisur Mondal, a sharecropper who was part of the Bhumi Ucched Pratirodh Committee (BUPC), said. Mondal’s views were echoed by local BJP leader Sabuj Pradhan, who agreed that Banerjee’s poll announcement is likely to change the social-political equations on the ground level. “Till last month the situation in Nandigram was not in favour of the TMC. It will be a divided house if
Tengua market area decorated with TMC flag and posters at Nandigram in East Medinipur district. (PTI) both Mamata Banerjee and Suvendu Adhikari contest from Nandigram assembly. “If one of them pull out from the contest, the elections will swing easily the other way,” Pradhan, a former Congress leader and part of BUPC,who had recently joined the BJP, said. Banerjee and Adhikari were heroes of the Nandigram movement. The feisty TMC boss was its guiding spirit, while Adhikari was her general on the ground, holding protests against the SEZ where Indonesia’s Salim group wanted to set up a chemical hub. But,after Adhikari
jumped the ship, several villages overnight switched sides, and the rival camps took over party offices. Even as Gokulpur, Gokulnagar, Gopimohanpur, Adhikaripari, Heria have turned into strongholds of Adhikari, Sonachura, Haripur, Khejuri, Brindaban Chak, Daudpur, Tekhali remains bastion of the TMC. Sixty-year old Kanchan Mal of Gokulpur village, who was injured during the agitation and her house was set on fire, said despite the anger against the TMC, “both Mamata di and Suvendu babu are like son and daughter of Nandigram. It
will be a tough choice for us.” “Both of them had come to my mud house during 2007-08. Although Didi never came after she became the Chief Minister, Suvendu babu was in touch with us for all these years,” she told this visiting PTI reporter. Local SUCI(C) leader Bhabani Prasad Das feels its a 60:40 fight in favour of the BJP, after Adhikari joined them. But, after Baner jee throwing her hat into the ring, it can be anybody’s game. “It is now a 50:50 game. But, having said that BJP still has a slight edge due to the communal polarisation,” Das said. Nandigram assembly constituency has around 70 per cent Hindus, while Muslims account for the rest. The TMC, however, disagreed that the entire Hindu population would vote for the BJP as Banerjee’s “appeal go beyond political and religious affiliations”. Fourteen years since Nandigram became a TMC stronghold, social disparity, development and, fortune for a “selected few” have not only angered the locals but also forced some of them to think of an alternative.

Nagaland Post Vol. XXxI NO. 46 Dimapur, FRIDAY, JANUARY 22, 2021
T
Doughty farmers
housands of farmers are camped around Delhi facing bitter cold and discomfort since November 25,2020 and held ten rounds of talks with several ministers of the Modi government till January, 2021 to break the deadlock over the three controversial farm laws. With brute majority, the government pushed through the bills in parliament despite demands by opposition for debate and referring the bills to the Parliamentary Standing Committee. The Bills were passed in Lok Sabha on September 17, 2020 and in the Rajya Sabha on September 20, 2020. The President gave the assent on September 24,2020. It may be noted that agriculture is a state subject, but the Centre pushed through the amendments without consultation of the states. The government used every strategy to break the deadlock with farmers but the farmers stuck to their demands for total repeal of the laws. Later, the Supreme Court stepped by asking the government to put on hold the laws that are at the centre of farmers’ protests. The court also formed a four-member panel to mediate between the government and farmers. However, farmers rejected the four-member panel, who they alleged were pro-farmers law. The government tried every trick in the book to break the ranks and the latest was hat it will put on hold the laws for a year and half. The government hoped the farmers would give it time and suspend the agitation but the farmers would have none of that. The government then used the National Investigation Agency (NIA) to break the farmers when several notices were issued. Baldev Singh Sirsa, president of Lok Bhalai Insaf Welfare Society, one of the unions engaged in talks with the government, was asked to appear at NIA headquarters in Delhi on January 17. Singh said the government tried to derail the agitation and when that failed, it was using the NIA. The distrust for the government is such that farmers are unwilling to accept the Prime minister Modi’s assurances at face value. Modi has claimed that the opposition have been misleading the nation on farm bills. This is an insult to the intelligence of the farmers among whom are retired army officers, highly qualified professionals etc. Modi had also claimed that his heart “bleeds for farmers” and his Government will never do away with the Minimum Support Price (MSP) regime. If that is true, then Modi should do away with MSP or procurement of food grains by the Government. Farmers know that unless the three laws are repealed, they will end up like vegetable and apple growers, coffee planters and rice farmers who get a pittance while retailers, exporters and processing units make huge profits. Former finance minister and Congress Rajya Sabha MP, P.Chidambaram had alleged that the Modi government’s agenda was to create ‘One Nation One Market’ meant that farmers can sell to anyone but without MSP. This means, farmers will have to sell at whatever rate offered by the buyers. A food policy expert illustrated this with the price of a cup of coffee sold at Rs.250 in a coffee bar but out of which a coffee grower gets only One Rupee. What the farmers want is a guarantee that they will not be prey to middlemen and corporate retailers.
DailyDevotion Recall What God Remembers
Thus says the Lord: “I remember…the kindness of your youth…” —Jeremiah 2:2 Am I as spontaneously kind to God as I used to be, or am I only expecting God to be kind to me? Does everything in my life fill His heart with gladness, or do I constantly complain because things don’t seem to be going my way? A person who has forgotten what God treasures will not be filled with joy. It is wonderful to remember that Jesus Christ has needs which we can meet— “Give Me a drink” (John 4:7). How much kindness have I shown Him in the past week? Has my life been a good reflection on His reputation? God is saying to His people, “You are not in love with Me now, but I remember a time when you were.” He says, “I remember…the love of your betrothal…” (Jeremiah 2:2). Am I as filled to overflowing with love for Jesus Christ as I was in the beginning, when I went out of my way to prove my devotion to Him? Does He ever find me pondering the time when I cared only for Him? Is that where I am now, or have I chosen man’s wisdom over true love for Him? Am I so in love with Him that I take no thought for where He might lead me? Or am I watching to see how much respect I get as I measure how much service I should give Him? As I recall what God remembers about me, I may also begin to realize that He is not what He used to be to me. When this happens, I should allow the shame and humiliation it creates in my life, because it will bring godly sorrow, and “godly sorrow produces repentance…” (2 Corinthians 7:10).

Post-mortem
India, world must gear up as Biden era begins P resident Joe Biden takes over America’s presidency under unprecedented circumstances. It is only the fourth time in US history that the outgoing leader refused to attend his successor’s inauguration, all earlier examples being from the nineteenth century. The transition has been disorderly, to say the least, despite the US facing a serious spike in Covid-19 cases, with over 400,000 dead and the economy slowing down. Domestic challenges are rivaled by those abroad as the Trumpian foreign policy legacy is equally fractious. While Biden’s nominees to head the state and defence departments and the CIA are all well-known individuals, their depositions before Senate committees a day before the inauguration give an insight into the new administration’s thinking. Antony Blinken, the incoming secretary of state, began with his personal story as the descendant of those who either fled Soviet pogroms or Nazi concentration camps. He ended with the touching tale about his late stepfather, hiding in a bush as disarray descended with Allied troops advancing into Germany in 1945, stepped out on seeing a tank with a five-pointed white star and told the African-American
GI emerging from its turret the only three English words his mother taught him: “God bless America”. These anecdotes bolstered Blinken’s argument that the US must lead the world “not only by the example of our power, but by the power of our example”. He listed the most pressing challenges as rising nationalism, receding democracy, growing rivalry from “China, and Russia and other authoritarian states, mounting a threat to a stable and open international system”. He also noted “a technological revolution” was reshaping our lives. If the US doesn’t lead, he said, “there can be only two outcomes: another nation will step in or none will, and chaos shall ensue”. On specifics, Blinken argued the US must defeat Covid-19, outcompete China and take the lead in tackling climate change. President Biden is likely to take action on all three fronts the very first day. The US will rejoin the Paris climate agreement, return to the World Health Organisation, reverse travel bans on select Muslim nations and reach out to alienated allies. But he singled out China as the most significant challenge. Therefore, President Trump was right in the di-
rection of his China policy, but wrong in the means he chose. The defence secretarydesignate, Gen. Lloyd Austin (Retd), talked about India’s near western neighbourhood. While he reiterated the US resolve to withdraw troops from Afghanistan, he qualified it, as Trump avoided doing, by saying safeguarding the gains in women’s rights, etc, must be a precondition to a final settlement. On Pakistan, he seemed to regress to old formulations like underscoring its importance to Afghan peace and regional stability. Blinken also singled out democracy and human rights as central to the Biden administration’s global outreach. Thus overall, while India would be happy with the tone and tenor on China, though what the new China containment strategy will be is still unclear, it would be cautious about Pakistan again getting more wriggle room. But New Delhi can’t take the talk about human rights lightly. It was speculated whether the sudden early retirement of a bureaucrat close to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his induction into Uttar Pradesh politics is not a first step in curbing the zeal of UP chief minister
Why the world would be a better place after Covid-19
B
ecause a smart world will rise from the ashes of the Covid-19 pandemic in the form of smart homes, cities, smart healthcare and even smart farming. We are witnessing the rise of a smart world. There is a reason why the world will be smart. For businesses it is a nimble way to bring down the cost, improve the quality, and survive the competition. For us, it is a shrewd way to save money and enjoy all the luxuries it offers. Would this paradigm shift make the world a better place for all of us? Here are a few illustrations delineating what a smart world can do for us. To begin with, homes are becoming smart. Especially after Covid, many of us are working from home. This has sprouted a huge market for smart widgets that make our homes comfy to live and save on energy at the same time. For example, smart thermostats, smart lights, smart switches, smart refrigerators, smart garage door openers, smart security cameras, smart locks, smart smoke detectors, smart TVs, smart entertainment systems, smart laundry machines, smart dish-washing machines, smart energy meters, smart water meters, smart gas meters, and so forth. You name it, we have it. These smart doohickeys are flooding the market for a reason. They save us energy and make our lives a lot easier in this stress filled professional world. The global smart home market is estimated to be about $70 billion and is expected to grow over $300 billion by 2025. Collaterally, smart homes are the building blocks of smart cities. Smart cities save tons of money to city administrations. They save on resources like power, gas, and water. Smart city governments are priding themselves in their excellent services to their citizens. Especially during Covid19 epidemic, smart cities have responded very well to emergencies. The coordination between hospitals, ambulatory serves, and various other city services were impeccable. Smart hospitals that were overloaded with Covid patients managed their resources efficiently. Out of 600 global cities
that are yet to go smart, more than 100 cities have officially been declared as smart! And that is a feather in their cap! The market size of global smart city transformation is expected to grow from US$ 400 billion in 2020 to about US$ 800 billion by 2025. In the world of healthcare, there has never been a better time than now. Telemedicine is on the rise because of Covid scare. No one wants to visit hospitals for simple ailments. Today for simple aches, you can get diagnosed online and the medications would arrive at your door. You don’t have to get out of your bed! World can’t be any better! Manufacturing is becoming smart too to reduce cost and to increase the quality. Many products are being produced locally, cutting down on imports, a great way to control the spread of viral pandemics. The worldwide market for industrial robots is expected to grow to approximately US$75 billion by 2025. The global investment in Internet of Things (IoT) is estimated to reach US$50 billion by 2025. The global virtual reality in manufacturing industry is expected to reach US$14 billion by 2025. The investment in artificial intelligence (AI) in manufacturing market is expected to grow up to US$ 4 billion by 2025. Energ y production is going smart too. Smart homes are also embracing solar. Solar roofs are easing the load on the grid. What’s more, smart homes reap the benefit of batteries not only for uninterrupted power but to store off-peak-power when it is cheap, further easing the grid. Globally, smart solar power plants are on the rise bringing down the cost of power and eventually replacing fossil. In 2019, for the first time the solar and wind power installations exceeded 120GW capacity globally. Yet another wave in smart world is smart farming. Farming is embracing robotics to counter labor shortage and to increase the yield. Reduced human interaction is great way to combat the pandemics. For leafy vegetables and fruits, vertical farming is coming into cities making the food cheaper and the cities greener.
Smart logistics is permeating to save on transportation. Transportation in the future is expected to become the cheapest ever with autonomous trucks. Driver-less trucks protect against the viral pandemic. Even the warehouses are becoming smart with robots reducing the human interaction and the spread of viral diseases. The 3D printing is yet another smart gizmo that is building homes at the fraction of the cost of traditional homes. We are talking about US!10,000 to build a small house! Even impoverished can afford a home when built by 3D printers. In Austin Texas, this technology is already being used to build homes to the poor! Soon every nation needs it. If you look at all these developments, these changes are not new at all. They have been pervading the market since last decade. However, Covid has accelerated their growth many folds. All these smart divergences will not come without a cost. There will be more unemployment in the elderly as they can’t cope with tech world, but there will be equally good number of hi-tech jobs for the youth. Youth could start earning money as early as 15-20 years of age and sadly go out of work as early as 45-50 years of age. A huge burden for governments to support the jobless. The good news is that the cost of food, housing and transportation is much cheaper in the smart world! All the governments around the world would be able to look after their citizens fairly well. Most of the technological changes are irreversible. There is no going back. Yet the world is hungry for more technology. Eventual smart world is a blessing in disguise. Everyone has a stake in it, both rich and the poor. Rich stash more, poor battle to survive. Both can win in the smart world! Would the world be a better place tomorrow? You bet! The trajectory that Covid ejected us can’t be forgotten even after Covid is long gone and forgotten. Ravi Amblee (Author of The Ugly Fight, the award-winning book that deliberates on Artificial Intelligence and climate change)
Yogi Adityanath in pursuing a majoritarian agenda and intolerance towards anyone criticising him. A comedian’s being detained for perceived insult raises questions about freedom of speech being curbed. The four-year free pass the government got on this count is now over. This is happening as the BJP prepares for a no-holds-barred electoral fight in West Bengal, and when the farmers’ protests at Delhi’s main entry points is nearing two months. In Britain, the farmers’ protests led to 100 MPs, across party lines, raising concern. A similar move can’t be ruled out in Washington, with Democrats now controlling both Houses. External affairs minister S. Jaishankar had earlier drawn the ire of a congressional committee by illogically seeking the exclusion of Congresswoman Pramila Jayapal from a meeting he was to attend as she had been critical of the government’s actions in Kashmir, including Article 370’s abrogation. She has been re-elected and may revisit that issue and now new ones like the farmers’ protests. President Donald Trump’s administration poisoned US foreign policy well before departure
by ramping up sanctions against Iran, raising the level of ties with Taiwan, declaring China’s actions against Uighurs as genocide, etc. The aim was possibly to reduce Biden’s strategic space to re-balance ties with those nations, or if he did so make him vulnerable to attacks over being soft on perceived antagonists. Interestingly, like the debate over Modi having gone overboard with his Houston rally with Trump, thus sowing seeds of distrust amongst Democrats, Australian PM Scott Morrison is being similarly excoriated. He attended a rally with Trump in Ohio and Opposition leader Anthony Albanese is calling it a foolish alignment with a losing candidate. But the key question is whether Biden, with eight years as President Barack Obama’s deputy and decades in the US Senate, can return the US and the world to its pre-pandemic, pre-Trump order. That seems unlikely both because China’s rise, if anything, has been accelerated by the current global crises and also as Biden has a domestic right-wing insurgency on his hands, which Trump may continue to pour fuel on from his perch in Florida. Liberal internationalism
needs re-invention. A postBrexit and weakened British PM Boris Johnson has proposed a “D-10”, a grouping of the G-7 plus three other democracies: India, South Korea and Australia. The US must reassess how to counter China’s success in getting two groups off the ground after Trump’s defeat: Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership and the Europe-China investment agreement. Will Biden re-engage with the new version of the TransPacific Partnership, which Trump walked out of. India just joined the UN Security Council for a two-year term. Will the Biden administration’s revived interest in international institutions enable India to use its membership to push for UNSC reforms and curb the rising penetration of China in UN bodies. None of this is possible unless the BJP takes a hard look at its domestic politics since Modi’s 2019 re-election. Peace at home, constitutionalism, rule of law and respect for human rights is a precondition to any genuine partnership abroad with major democracies recovering from the right-wing onslaught on their institutions. Covid-19, financial considerations
I
n an unprecedented step, India will not print the annual budget documents as has been the case since the first budget was presented on November 26, 1947. This considered decision was taken in the light of COVID-19 constraints, since printing such documents entails keeping 100 officials in isolation in cramped conditions in North Block for almost a fortnight. This is a prudent and commendable decision. Bravo. Extrapolating from this departure from traditional practice, there is a compelling case to review the Republic Day parade (January 26) and consider deferring this grand annual spectacle for reasons that could be clustered as “COVID plus”. The parade has already been trimmed and will now terminate at India Gate instead of the Red Fort. Further, the number of personnel in a marching contingent has been reduced from 144 to 96 and to ensure appropriate social distancing, only 25,000 visitors will be permitted. Anxiety about COVID-19 and the increased footprint due to the new variant has already led to UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson cancelling his own participation as the chief guest. Hence, the 2021 parade will be further trimmed. Given these developments, it is opportune to review the Republic Day parade and its symbolism. Public health regulations and COVID-19 precautions indicate that preparation for the parade and the conduct of this grand event will increase the probability of the virus spreading. This is an empirical reality. In end December, 150 army personnel who arrived in Delhi for the parade tested positive for the virus and were swiftly quarantined. Luckily, no further cases have been reported. However, bringing the marching contingents, state tableaux and 25,000 invitees together for a fourhour public, open-air event (even if they are all masked) may not be as prudent, for the likelihood of exposure leading to COVID-19 infections is certain. Is this desirable? The 2021 parade is standalone but there are two other elements about continuing with the parade that warrant a wider debate. The first is the symbolism of the parade and what it represents. There is little doubt that for pageantry, colour and spectacle, the Republic Day parade is distinctive and has earned high praise globally for how it is conducted. India
adopted its Constitution on this day in January 1950 and became a sovereign republic, thereby shedding the last formal colonial links. The day is special for both the country and its citizens, as are all national days the world over. But should the world’s largest democracy continue to “celebrate” its sovereignty and commitment to the letter and spirit of the Constitution by this marked emphasis on its military capability? This is an issue that merits informed and objective debate both within Parliament and among citizens for there will be many views on this subject. The parade is an expensive event and some numbers are instructive. Preparation for the parade begins months in advance and entails expenditure by the Centre and state governments. It is a complex budgetary exercise to arrive at a consolidated figure but some strands provide a ballpark figure. An RTI query elicited the following expenditure incurred by the central government on the parade: It increased from Rs 145 crore in 2001 to Rs 320 crore in 2014 and this does not include components such as VIP security arrangements, traffic diversions, etc. One may conjecture that the corresponding figure for the 2020 parade may be closer to Rs 500 crore. At a time when the government coffers are severely strained due to COVID-19 and the defence ministry is seeking innovative ways to “tighten the belt” of the “fauj”, any fiscal saving ought to be given due consideration and Rs 500 crore is not insignificant. To place this in context, India has 33 Sainik Schools that train young boys for the military and the first schools began in 1960-61. Thousands of these children became officers and did the nation proud. Alas, some of these schools are now likely to shut down (for example, Kazhakootam, Kerala) since funds as modest as Rs 6 crore are not available. The limited suggestion is to defer the parade this year and deliberate on its continuation in the course of the year. Perhaps, a parade every 10 years? The next one when the republic is 80? And in the interim, use the funds saved to school the next generation to defend the country and the flag. C. Uday Bhaskar (Director, Society for Policy Studies, New Delhi)
Reader’s Post Sir,
Irregular power supply
For the past several days, Dimapur has been experiencing erratic power supply. And with no proper timing for load shedding, it has affected the daily work activities of every individual. The frequent power failure has affected the students’ communities the most. Some of them already have exams and with irregular network connectivity as an added bonus, it has become almost impossible for the students to complete their online tests on time. The irregular power supplies have also greatly affected the business establishments too. Therefore, I urge the concerned authorities to look into these matters urgently and take necessary measures to provide regular power supply and stable internet connectivity to everyone. Vaccine hesitancy high in Delhi-NCR
New Delhi, Jan 21 (IANS): According to a survey conducted by the National Council of Applied Economic Research (NCAER), about 20 per cent respondents are certain about not taking the Covid19 vaccine. The NCAER released the results of Round 4 of its Delhi-NCR Coronavirus Telephone Survey (DCVTS-4) on Thursday. A significant r ural (22.4%) and urban (17.5%) differences were observed. An additional 4% of respondents mentioned that they will not take it as they are already infected. Another 15% are unsure about taking the vaccine. Combining all these three categories, one can argue that at this point vaccine hesitancy is quite high (39%) in Delhi-NCR. No significant association was observed between age, gender of respondent and vaccine hesitancy. Less educated (0-4 years of complete education) respondents are more hesitant to take vaccines (52%). Improved trust in vaccine development and approval process as well as overall trust in the government health systems may play an important role in reducing vaccine hesitancy.

Nagaland Post, Dimapur FRIDAY, JANUARY 22, 2021
In the context of the debate whether vaccine is a public or private good, DCVTS-4 asked about people’s willingness to pay for two doses of coronavirus vaccine to those who are willing to take vaccine or unsure about it. About 41% respondents think that the vaccine should be provided free either by the government or their employer. An additional 14% said they will not pay more than Rs 500. The proportion of respondents expecting free vaccine is significantly higher among respondents from poor economic status (48%) and casual wage workers (51%). Interestingly, about a similar proportion of people (40%) are willing to pay as much as required for two doses of the vaccine. Understandably, this proportion is higher (45%)
among respondents from rich households. Because of COVID-related pressure on the health system, the disruption of routine health services emerged as a major area of concern. To understand the current situation of healthcare access, DCVTS-4 asked about the experience of household members in availing medical services in the last 3 months (October-December) for a varied range of health needs. The findings suggest that the prevalence of disruption of medical services is dependent upon the type of services. Services that are commonly used and are generally available close to home, e.g.,access to medication, treatment of minor illnesses like fever, cough and cold, diarrhea, pregnancy and delivery related services,
childhood immunization, the level of disruption is low. However, specialized services that often require travelling outside the village or the local neighbourhood, e.g. care for cardiovascular diseases, cancer, chronic respiratory illness, and kidney disease were more difficult to avail. However, due to their rarity this affected a smaller proportion of households. For example, 23% of 175 households experiencing chronic respiratory illness or kidney disease faced difficulty (either did not receive the service or received with difficulty) in availing medical care. The proportion of disruption is 28% for cardiovascular disease or cancer care among 125 households who needed care. In comparison, 7.5% had trouble obtaining treatment for minor illnesses. This may reflect both demand and supply constraints. DCVTS-4 data suggest that that 37% households believe that the healthcare service capacity is below the normal level. At the same time, about 22% respondents reported that they would either avoid visiting medical facilities even now or visit only if there is an emergency.
3 BJP activists arrested for ‘goli maro’ slogan in WB C h a n da n n a g a r (WB), Jan 21 (PTI): Three BJP activists including its Hooghly district youth wing chief Suresh Sahu have been arrested for allegedly raising ‘goli maro...’ (shoot the traitors) slogan at a roadshow of party leader Suvendu Adhikari here, police said on Thursday. Some BJP activists had allegedly raised the slogan at a party programme in West Bengal’s Hooghly district on Wednesday, following which district police registered a suo motu case and arrested them late at night, an officer said. The three arrested persons will be produced at a court during the day, he said. The activists, who were trailing the truck carrying Adhikari along with Hooghly MP Locket Chatterjee and Rajya Sabha member Swapan Dasgupta, had allegedly raised the slogan holding BJP flags and the Tricolour in Rathtala area here. BJP spokesperson Samik Bhattacharya said that the party does not endorse the slogan raised by the participants holding the BJP flag.
‘1,100-plus schools in border, coastal areas identified for NCC training’
New Delhi, Jan 21 (PTI): The government has identified more than 1,100 schools in border and coastal areas where students would soon be getting training under the National Cadet Corps (NCC), Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said on Thursday. “Our Prime Minister has decided that NCC should be expanded. The training of NCC should be provided in border areas and coastal areas. We have identified more than 1,100 schools in such areas where NCC training would be given soon,” Singh said. While there were just 28 per cent girl cadets in the NCC earlier, their numbers have increased to be 43 per cent of the total cadets, the minister said in his speech at an NCC camp here. A total of 1,000 cadets, including 380 girl cadets, drawn from all states and Union territories of the country, are participating in this nearly month-long camp that will culminate on January 28. We will do vaccination not only in India but also provide these vaccines to our neighbouring countries where it is required.” “Moreover, if it is needed, we will provide vaccines to other countries of the world too,” he stated. From Wednesday onward, India has been sending COVID-19 vaccines under grant assistance to Bhutan, Maldives, Bangladesh, Nepal, Myanmar and Seychelles. India started its vaccination drive on January 16 with Covishield,

The minister said, “The government has decided that when it comes to employment, the NCC cadets would be given preference. As far as I know, this preference is being given. In the selection process, NCC cadets are given additional marks too.” The NCC, which comes under the Defence Ministry, is the largest voluntary youth organisation of the country which was raised in 1948.

He urged the department to come up with plans in this regard. He also stressed on scaling up and improving the current facilities so as to increase revenue generation. The adviser advised that adaptive trials and research of tropical and subtropical crops should be done at the department itself before sending these to farmers. He stressed introduction of modern farming technology to minimise labour cost and maximise profit. Delivering a brief speech on the occasion, horticulture director and mission director of Mission for Integrated Development of Horticulture (MIDH), Dr R Elithung Lotha said the department’s lands were under the possession of land grabbers, adding that 297 encroachers had constructed houses on the department’s land. However, with the active support of the State government and intervention of the district administration, the land was saved from the encroachers, he added. He said the guest house required an upgrade and suggested construction of

(From p-1) In his speech, horticulture and border affairs adviser Mhathung Yanthan pointed out that horticulture was only not about fruits and vegetables, but also about beauty and aesthetics which, according to him, were intricately linked to recreation, health and better living. He said it was chief minister’s idea to convert open spaces into recreational centres, for which he earmarked funds. He claimed that formation of bamboo, honey and bio-resource missions, all of which were farm related, were initiated by Rio. “Because of his initiations, the missions were now standing tall, benefitting people,” he added. Stating that many government department lands had fallen in the hands of land grabbers, Yanthan urged the departments to protect and make best use of their land, while appealing to leaders of neighbouring villages to continue to supporting and cooperating with department officials in protecting lands. Estimating that the horticulture department had around 15 to 20 percent of its total land area (30 hectares) as water bodies, he stressed that this should be maintained to support

we try to cater for every contingency and plug every loophole. This results in every acquisition process being tied up in knots,” he said. In the end what happens is that the processes and procedures rather than product become paramount and these impede defence modernisation, Gen Naravane said. He further pointed out that a qualitative requirement, for example, is for-
matted in a very stringent manner. “We want the best of what is available across the world without realising overarching technological limitations that come with every feature that is expected in an equipment,” Gen Naravane said. He explained that to compound the issue, vendors also tend to overpromise and it ultimately becomes undeliverable. Gen Naravane said the labourious, time consuming and often rigid acquisition process also in itself creates delays in the acquisition cycle. “During the cycle better version of the equipment is available than is in the original contract. But there is still no scope for negotiation to incorporate these new features and to make any mid-course correction,” he said.

Mumbai, Jan 21 (PTI): Strict action will be taken against the guilty after the report is submitted to the Maharashtra government in connection with the January 9 Bhandara district hospital fire, in which 10 newborns were killed, Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar said on Thursday. Speaking to reporters here, Pawar said, “We did not receive the report till yesterday. We are waiting for the report...strict action will be taken against whoever is guilty after the report is submitted (to the government).” Ten newborn babies, admitted in the Special Newborn Care Unit of the hospital had died while seven others were rescued. The panel probing the incident is expected to submit its report to the government soon. The report, to be submitted by Nagpur divisional commissioner Sanjeev Kumar, is expected to mention the likely cause of the fire and fix responsibility. Meanwhile, Pawar also urged Maratha youths not to take extreme steps over the community’s quota issue which is pending before the new building to host guests Supreme Court, and added coming from outside, while all need to wait for the apex requesting the State gov- court’s decision. ernment to look into the matter. Pointing to lack of security and low boundary walls, Lotha said the department needed proper walls to protect government property, adding that the existing fence was erected in 1988. He also informed that Green Park would be opened for public from January 22 (6 a.m. to 4 p.m.) Other dignitaries who attended the inaugural programme included rural development minister Metsubo Jamir, NDPP president Chingwang Konyak, commissioner of police, DPRO officials and departmental staff. Earlier, horticulture department’s commissioner & secretary Anenla T Sato delivered the welcome address and also chaired the programme, while Sunep Lemtur presented a special number and horticulture officer and SHN officer in charge Alemtemsu, delivered the vote of thanks. It may be noted that PRC would remain open from 5 a.m. to 6 p.m. during summer season and from 6 am to 6 p.m. during the winter free entry in January. He said later the department will revise the membership DC-22 and entre fees.
The four had ventured into the sea for fishing in a boat belonging to a man from Thangachimadam near Rameswaram in Ramanathapuram district, he said, adding it was among the 214 mechanised vessels that had set out for fishing. Condoling the deaths, the Chief Minister said he has ordered a solatium of Rs 10 lakh to the families of each of the four dead fishermen. Palaniswami said he has ordered a job for one member from each of the four families in government or state-run enterprises and relief assistance for the boat affected in the attack. An official in Rameswaram said bodies of all the four fishermen have been recovered by Sri Lankan authorities. On Wednesday, bodies of two fishermen were recovered. A protest demonstration was held in Rameswaram on Thursday, condemning the ‘attack’ and demanding that the government take steps to bring back the bodies of the fishermen. The Lankan Navy had on Tuesday said it had launched a search and rescue operation for “unknown number of missing fishermen” and the sunken boat. It had said the Navy units on patrol carried out an operation to seize Indian fishing trawlers ‘poaching’ in Sri Lankan waters after observing more than 50 vessels.

But he made a point that more needs to be done. “While all these initiatives are quite appreciable, there is a lot of work that still needs to be done,” said Gen Naravane. He also quoted late Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar as saying that the “entire procurement process is based on distrust”. “There are certain inherent procedural lacunae that have crept into the acquisition process which primarily arises due to the overbearing nature of our rules, regulations and guidelines in trying to ensure zero error,” said Gen Naravane adding, “This is also aggravated by our own interpretation of rules.” He said DAP 2016 which is about 450 pages and DAP 2020 has about 681 pages but it has not been able to fast track the process of acquisition. “It is because

Chennai, Jan 21 (PTI): Citing information from fishermen that four of their community “died due to an attack” by the Sri Lankan Navy, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister K Palaniswami on Thursday condemned the island nation maritime force for such acts shattering their livelihood. To put an end to such mid-sea incidents, appropriate action was being taken and his government was in touch with the union government, he said. He has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to initiate an appropriate inquiry through the Indian High Commission in Colombo into the incident, Palaniswami said, three days after Sri Lanka said an Indian fishing boat sank in its waters following a ‘collision’ with its Navy vessel. Condoling the deaths, the Chief Minister, in an official release, said he has ordered a solatium of Rs 10 lakh each to the families of the four fishermen. He said when four fishermen who had set out for fishing from Pudukottai district on January 18 did not return, a search operation was undertaken by Indian Coast Guard, a naval ship and helicopter on his direction. “We now have received information through fishermen that the four (missing) fishermen died due to attack by Sri Lankan Navy,” he said in an official release.
New Delhi, Jan 21 (IANS): Self-reliance is a strategic necessity but to achieve it a revolution is needed in bureaucratic affairs, Indian Army Chief General Manoj Mukund Naravane has said while pointing out that defence modernisation is often held hostage to the processes and procedures involved. Gen Naravane said red-tapism has made the defence acquisition process a “vicious cycle”. “We need a revolution in bureaucratic affairs to realise the vision of selfreliance,” he said while speaking on the occasion of 25 years of Army-industry partnership at a virtual conference. Talking about the Defence Acquisition Procedure (DAP) 2020, he said it has been aligned to empower domestic industry. Moreover, a strong festive season has driven sales growth well above earlier expectations. Hence, the consumer universe can be expected to deliver more than 20 per cent earnings growth.” “Financials would also benefit from RBI standstill on NPA recognition and deliver strong PPOP (preprovision operating profit) growth as credit costs remain contained to lower than expected levels.” Additionally, millions of new investors into the country’s stock markets are also expected to usher-in another round of a buying spree. “A major portion of these investors are first time investors and have realised that investing in stock markets can be rewarding,” said Gaurav Garg, Head of Research at CapitalVia.

Mumbai, Jan 21 (IANS): The bull run in India’s equity market will last at least till the Union Budget FY22, even as the barometer index S&P BSE Sensex mounted the 50,000-level mark. Accordingly, the Union Budget FY22 is widely expected to be expansionary in terms of massive stimulus spending to aide the economy’s faster recovery. Even positive global cues such as a massive stimulus plan being proposed by the new US administration under President Joe Biden and the ongoing global vaccination programme are seen as solid signs by investors to hold on to their current positions. In fact, a faster-thananticipated macro recovery has remained intact. It has been supplemented by the vaccine roll-out programme. Consequently, market participants’ expectations have soared, especially of healthy Q3 results. Other factors such as an abundant global and domestic liquidity as well as rising consumption trend will continue to power the bull run. Notably, the FIIs are expected to continue pumping up the never ending bull run during the unusual pandemic period.

full participant and a global leader in confronting such threats and advancing global health and health security,” Biden wrote. The UN SecretaryGeneral welcomed the US’ re-engagement with the WHO, saying supporting the health agency is “absolutely critical” to combatting the COVID-19 pandemic. He said Washington joining the global vaccine initiative will boost efforts to ensure equitable access to vaccines for all countries. Guterres said now is the time for unity and for the international community to work together in solidarity to stop the virus and its shattering consequences. The US has been the largest funder to the WHO, contributing more than USD 450 million per annum. The US has been a party to the WHO Constitution since June 21, 1948. As the world reached a “heart-wrenching milestone” of two million
COVID-19-related deaths less than a week ago, Guterres lamented that the deadly impact of the pandemic has worsened due to the absence of a global coordinated effort and said that “vaccinationalism” by governments is “self-defeating” that will delay a global recovery. Guterres has said the UN is supporting countries to mobilise the largest global immunisation effort in history and the world organization is committed to making sure that vaccines are seen as global public goods people’s vaccines. White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki said that Biden signed the executive order, reversing Trump’s decision to withdraw from the WHO. “This will strengthen our own efforts to get the pandemic under control by improving global health, and tomorrow we are not wasting any time,” she said. The spokesperson said that these individuals “have been mainly responsible for a series of crazy US moves on China-related issues”. “These individuals and their immediate family members are prohibited from entering the mainland, Hong Kong and Macao of China. “They and companies and institutions associated with them are also restricted from doing business with China,” the spokesperson said. In a statement, the Foreign Ministry said: “Over the past few years, some anti-China politicians in the US, out of their selfish political interests and prejudice and hatred against

Addressing a press briefing on Wednesday, Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying claimed that the Trump administration had made numerous “fundamental mistakes”, resulting in “serious damage” to bilateral ties. Hua hoped that the new administration under Biden would “look at China rationally and objectively, meet China halfway and, in the spirit of mutual respect, equality and mutual benefit, push China-US relations back to the right track of healthy and stable development as soon as possible”, CNN reported.

4 Pakistani soldiers killed in blast ISLAMABAD, JAN 21 (IANS): Four Pakistani soldiers were killed and five others injured in an IED blast in Balochistan province, intelligence sources said on Thursday. The incident took place in Sibi district on Wednesday afternoon. After the explosion, Frontier Corps personnel cleared a road for setting up a new checkpost to nab terrorists and monitor vehicles in the blast site, the sources told Xinhua news agency. The injured soldiers were airlifted to the provincial capital of Quetta. The outlawed Balochistan Liberation Army has claimed responsibility for the attack, the sources added. A wave of terrorism has recently resurged in Balochistan featuring an increase in attacks on security forces and civilians in the last two months. In the wake of the rising terror incidents, the provincial government has launched a province-wide anti-militancy operation.

A view of newly established Chinese village in Arunachal Pradesh.
BEIJING, JAN 21 (PTI): China’s development and constr uction activities “within its own territory” is “normal” and beyond reproach, the Chinese Foreign Ministry said here on Thursday, reacting to a report about China building a new village in Arunachal Pradesh. “China’s position on the Zangnan region (South Tibet) is consistent and clear. We never recognised the so-called Arunachal Pradesh,” Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Hua Chunying told a media briefing while responding to a question. China claims Arunachal Pradesh as part of southern Tibet, while India’s consistent stand has been that the north-
eastern state is an integral and inalienable part of the country. Hua said China’s development and construction activities “within our own territory is normal.” “This is beyond reproach as it is in our territory,” Hua added. In a report, NDTV news channel showed two images of the area in Arunachal Pradesh where it said a new village has been set up by China and it consisted of about 101 homes. According to the channel, the first image dated August 26, 2019 did not show any human habitation but the second one of November 2020 shows a row of structures. In a cautious reaction to the report, India on Mon-
day said it keeps a constant watch on all developments having a bearing on the country’s security, and takes necessary measures to safeguard its sovereignty and territorial integrity. The Ministry of External Affairs in New Delhi said India has stepped up the construction of border infrastructure, including roads and bridges for the improvement of livelihood of its citizens. “Government keeps a constant watch on all developments having a bearing on India’s security and takes all the necessary measures to safeguard its sovereignty and territorial integrity,” it said. The IndiaChina border dispute covers the 3,488-km-long Line of Actual Control (LAC).
At least 28 die in a twin suicide bombings in Baghdad
BAG H DA D, JA N 2 1 (AP): Twin suicide bombings ripped through a busy market in the Iraqi capital Thursday, killing at least 28 people and wounding 73 others, officials said. The rare suicide bombing attack hit the Bab al-Sharqi commercial area in central Baghdad amid heightened political tensions over planned early elections and a severe economic crisis. Blood smeared the floors of the busy market amid piles of clothes and shoes as survivors took stock of the disarray in the aftermath. No one immediately took responsibility for the attack. Iraq’s military said at least 28 people were killed and 73 wounded in the attack and said some of the injured were in serious condition. Hospital and police officials said the death toll was actually much higher, with at least 27 dead and more than 60 wounded. They spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to brief the media. Iraq’s Health Ministry announced all of its hospitals in the capital were mobilized to treat the wounded. Trapped China gold miners have to wait 15 days for rescue QIXIA, (China), JAN 21 (AGENCIES): Workers trapped in a gold mine in China since Jan. 10 may have to wait another 15 days before they can be rescued because of a blockage on their intended escape route, officials said on Thursday. A total of 22 workers were trapped underground after an explosion at the Hushan mine in Qixia, a major gold-producing region under the administration of Yantai in Shandong province on the northeast coast. One is confirmed to have died, while 11 are known to be alive. The remaining 10 are missing. Rescuers were drilling new shafts on Thursday to reach 10 of the men in the middle section of the mine, more than 600 metres from the entrance, who have been

occurred as security forces pursued two suicide bombers who detonated their explosives in the market near Tayaran Square, according to military spokesman Yahya Rasool. The suicide bombings marked the first in three years to target Baghdad’s bustling commercial area. A suicide bomb attack took place in the same area in 2018 shortly after thenPrime Minister Haidar al-
Abadi declared victory over the Islamic State group. No one immediately took responsibility for Thursday’s attack, but Iraq has seen assaults perpetrated by both the Islamic State group and militia groups in recent months. Militias have routinely targeted the American presence in Iraq with rocket and mortar attacks, especially the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad’s heavily fortified
Green Zone. The pace of those attacks, however, has decreased since an informal truce was declared by Iran-backed armed groups in October. The style of Thursday’s assault was similar to those IS has conducted in the past. But the group has rarely been able to penetrate the capital since being dislodged by Iraqi forces and the U.S.-led coalition in 2017.

Biden orders US to rejoin WHO
WASHINGTON/UNITED NATIONS, JAN 21 (PTI): The US rejoined the World Health Organisation (WHO) in one of the first official orders of the Joe Biden presidency, reversing a key foreign policy decision his predecessor Donald Trump took last year after accusing the UN health agency of incompetence and bowing to Chinese pressure over the coronavirus pandemic. In April last year, as the coronavirus pandemic was spreading across the globe, Trump cut off US funding to the WHO, saying it was “virtually controlled by China.” He then went further, triggering the process to pull the US completely out of the organisation. The withdrawal was due to go into effect in July this year, but Biden’s order will cancel it. Biden in a letter to UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres on Wednesday, the first day of his presidency, said, “The United States intends to remain a member of the World Health Organisation.” “The WHO plays a crucial role in the world’s fight against the deadly COVID-19 pandemic as well as countless other threats to global health and health security. ady GaGa’s bold red lipstick at President Joe Biden’s Inauguration marked the vibrancy of the special day. The 34-year-old Oscarwinner dazzled as she gave a show-stopping performance of the US national anthem, ‘The Star-Spangled Banner’, as part of the event at the Capitol in Washington D.C. to mark Biden and his Vice President Kamala Harris’ inauguration on Wednesday (20.01.21). The ‘Stupid Love’ hitmaker wore her own brand’s Haus Laboratories Le Monster Matte lip
crayon in the shade 1950, to resemble empowerment on the historical day. Sarah Tanno, Gaga’s make-up artist, told Vogue: “While her make-up was classic and romantic, with the perfect shade of red lipstick, which felt appropriate for such a vibrant day, the rest of her make-up was soft and luminous.” The ‘A Star Is Born’ star opted for an elegant braided up-do wrapped with a black ribbon and a pair of poppies to symbolise peace. As for her outfit, Gaga rocked a Schiaparelli Haute
Couture ensemble, comprised of a navy jacket and an oversized red skirt, the colours of her country. The ‘Born This Way’ singer also made a statement with a golden dove brooch to send a message of peace and unity. Schiaparelli’s artistic director, Daniel Roseberry, said in a statement: “As an American living in Paris, this ensemble is a love letter to the country I miss so dearly and to a performer whose artistry I have so long admired. Maison Schiaparelli is honoured to have this chance to dress the iconic Lady Gaga on this historic Inauguration Day. God Bless Lady Gaga and God Bless America.” Ahead of the Inauguration, Gaga shared a snap of herself in the Capitol wearing an angelic all-white Givenchy ensemble. She wrote on Instagram: “I pray tomorrow will be a day of peace for all Americans. A day for love, not hatred. A day for acceptance not fear. A day for dreaming of our future joy as a country. A dream that is non-violent, a dream that provides safety for our souls.” (Contactmusic)
il Wayne has released his first new music since being pardoned by Donald Trump. The former US President pardoned over 100 people during his last day in office on Tuesday (19.01.21), including the 38-year-old rap star, who had pleaded guilty to illegally possessing a loaded weapon on a private jet. Two days later, the ‘Lollipop’ hitmaker has shared his new track, ‘Ain’t Got Time’, featuring Fousheé, which appears to reference the incident in December 2019, when he was a passenger on a plane searched by federal agents in Miami. He raps: “The feds they hot on us ... they raided my private plane.” As a convicted felon, following a gun charge in 2007, Wayne could have faced the possibility of a 10-year spell in prison. However, he received the pardon from the billionaire businessman, having previously endorsed Trump for reelection. Last year, he wrote on Twitter: “Just had a great meeting with @realdonaldtrump @potus besides what he’s done so far with criminal reform, the platinum plan is going to give the community real

Prior to being pardoned, the ‘Sucker for Pain’ star released his rendition of NFL anthem ‘Green And Yellow’. The lifelong Green Bay Packers supporter was asked by the American football team to put his own spin on the song. He said: “I did a song before and we had a good turnout. It was successful. We had good results, and we’re going to try to do it again this time … I put a lot of time into it. I worked on it for three days, too. I don’t do that.” (Contactmusic)

On Thursday, it was announced that British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) has extended the deadline for submission of applications for BAFTA Breakthrough India by two weeks, from January 25 to February 8. “I am extremely proud to see the response that BAFTA Breakthrough India has received from across the country. I encourage talented individuals from across film, games and television to get involved and submit their applica-

Pogba fires Man Utd back to top Red carpet welcome for Rahane with stunning winner against Fulham Mohammed Siraj heads straight to father’s grave
MUMBAI/NEW DELHI/HYDERABAD, JAN 21 (PTI): Chants of ‘aala re aala Ajinkya aala’ headlined a red carpet welcome for Ajinkya Rahane on his triumphant return from Australia with some other teammates but the mood was sombre in Hyderabad as one of his warriors, Mohammed Siraj, headed straight to his father’s grave. The chants (meaning here comes our Ajinkya) were heard amid the beating of the traditional dhol tasha and showering of flower petals at Rahane’s residential complex. Besides stand-in captain Rahane, also arriving in Mumbai were coach Ravi Shastri, star batsman Rohit Sharma, pacer Shardul Thakur and opener Prithvi Shaw, while Brisbane Test hero Rishabh Pant landed in the national capital early this morning. Siraj, who decided to stay put in Australia with the team and miss his father’s last rites, drove straight from Hyderabad’s Rajiv Gandhi International Airport to the graveyard and paid his last respects to his departed father Mohammed Ghouse. of a two-month long wait for the speedster, who was India’s top performer with the ball during the trip. Siraj’s 53-year-old father, who was an auto driver, had died on November 20 due to a lung ailment. This was just a week after his son landed in Australia with the Indian team on his maiden tour. He was given the option of returning home but he decided otherwise and broke down thinking about him when the national anthem was played before the Sydney Test. He made his Test debut in the second match
in Melbourne and finished the Border-Gavaskar series with 13 wickets - the most by any Indian bowler. T Natarajan, who was originally picked as a net bowler but became the first Indian cricketer to make his international debut across all three formats during the same tour, landed in Bengaluru and then took off for his village in Tamil Nadu’s Salem. Once he reached his native Chinnappampatti village, Natarajan was accorded a festive welcome, complete with garlands and a chariot ride through the streets where people gath-
World No.1 Barty joins elite field for Adelaide exhibition M E L B O U R N E , JA N 21 (AGENCIES): World number one Ash Barty will join Serena Williams, Rafa Nadal and Novak Djokovic in playing a pre-Australian Open exhibition event in Adelaide at the end of the month, organisers confirmed on Thursday. U.S. Open winners Dominic Thiem and Naomi Osaka and women’s No. 2 Simona Halep will be part of the eight-player field, which also includes 19-year-old Italian Jannik Sinner. The Adelaide event, dubbed “A Day at the Drive”, will launch Australia’s summer of tennis and take place at the city’s Memorial Drive Tennis Centre on Jan. 29. Barty, 24, has not played a competitive match since February, opting not to defend her French Open title and skipping the U.S. Open in New York amid the COVID-19 pandemic. “I am looking forward to playing my first match for the 2021 season in Adelaide,” said the Queenslander, who won a WTA event in Adelaide last year.

“I have fond memories from the Adelaide International last year and it will be great to get back on court here for A Day at the Drive.” The Australian Open, the year’s first Grand Slam, has been delayed until Feb. 8 this year. The Melbourne Park venue will also host warm-up events from Jan. 31. Hundreds of other players and their entourages are undergoing mandatory 14-day quarantine in Melbourne. Tennis Australia Chief Executive Craig Tiley said earlier in the week that the top players were sent
to Adelaide to ensure organisers did not exceed the limit set by the authorities for people quarantining in Melbourne. That decision prompted claims from some of those isolating in Melbourne that the big names were receiving better treatment. Tiley did not disagree. “... they’re the top players in the world and my general rule is if you’re at the top of the game, a grand slam champion, it’s just the nature of the business,” he said. “You are going to get a better deal.”

South Korean sports coach convicted of sexual assault
SEOUL, JAN 21 (AGENCIES): A South Korean sports coach has been sentenced to more than 10 years in jail for sexually assaulting an athlete. Former speed skating coach Cho Jae-beom was found guilty of assaulting champion Shim Suk-hee ahead of the 2018 Olympics in the country. The coach only admitted verbal and physical abuse against the athlete. The allegations were first made in the wake of the #MeToo movement when a number of South Korean athletes accused their coaches of abusing them. Olympic short-track speed skating gold-medallist Shim Suk-hee first accused her former coach in January 2018, when she said he had repeatedly assaulted her since her teenage years. She said he had beaten her since from the age of seven - and had even broken her fingers with an ice hockey stick. Other athletes then came forward and Cho was eventually sentenced to 10 months in jail for assaulting Ms Shim and three other skaters.
India junior beat Chile senior 3-2 in women’s hockey SANTIAGO (CHILE), JAN 21 (IANS): An impressive outing by the Indian junior women’s hockey team saw them make a comeback from a goal down to defeat the Chile senior team 3-2 in their third match on the Chile tour. Having played the Chile junior women’s team in the first two matches of the tour, it was Deepika (39’), Sangita Kumari (45’) and Lalrindiki (47’) who scored for India in their win against the Chile senior women’s team, after Fernanda Villagran (21’) had given the hosts the advantage. Chile’s Simone Avelli (56’) added their second goal late on in the match, but it was not enough to force a comeback as India secured a huge win. It was a quiet first quarter for both the teams as India started the match on the front-foot, twice penetrating inside Chile’s striking circle, but without causing much damage. came in the 10th minute when they earned themselves a penalty corner, but to no avail as the visitors defended it well. The second quarter, however, was dominated by Chile as their experienced players took control of proceedings in the midfield, setting the tempo of the match. As a result, Chile won themselves back-toback penalty corners in the 21st minute, the second of which saw India end
up conceding the opening goal scored by hosts’ Fernanda Villagran. India’s young guns tried to create a clear-cut opportunity in the latter stages of the second quarter, but saw their efforts get stalled as Chile took their one-goal lead into the half-time break. A dominating start to the third quarter saw India win as many as five penalty corners inside the first nine minutes, and they were rewarded for their dedication as they
scored the equalizing goal in the 39th minute through Deepika who finished off a team move. Piling the pressure on their opponents, and taking control of proceedings, India then went on to take the lead in the 45th minute through a penalty corner as this time Mariana Kujur’s drag-flick was deflected into the back of the net by striker Sangita Kumari to make it 2-1 in India’s favour. India maintained the pressure on the hosts by looking to create chances in the fourth quarter, and they were yet again rewarded for their efforts in the 47th minute as forward Lalrindiki found herself clear just in front of goal to deflect Sangita Kumari’s pass from the left flank into Chile’s goal, and give India a resounding 3-1 lead. A late fightback from Chile saw Simone Avelli score their second goal of the evening in the 56th minute, however it was not enough for the hosts to take the victory away from India as they fell short by a goal.

However, more surprises awaited the reticent batsman after he drove straight to his housing society in suburban Matunga, where residents had made elaborate preparations to accord their hero a royal welcome. Rahane was welcomed with the beats of dhol, while others showered the cricketer with flower petals. R a h a n e wa s a l s o joined by his wife and twoyear-old daughter in the celebration. Soaking in the carnival-like atmosphere, Rahane acknowledged the love and adulation showered on him by the people of the city, many of whom waited for his team at the airport wearing masks amid the COVID-19 pandemic. In his society, residents and videographers jostled to capture the moments and the unassuming batsman posed happily for them. Paul Pogba (Centre) celebrates after scoring a winning goal against Fulham.
LO N D O N, JA N 2 1 (AGENCIES): Paul Pogba has once again fired Manchester United to the top of the Premier League table with a sensational strike against Fulham. Fulham shocked the Red Devils at Craven Cottage as Ademola Lookman fired Scott Parker’s men into the lead in the fifth minute of the clash on Wednesday. However, United managed to pull back an equaliser through Edinson Cavani to send both sides into halftime with the scores at 1-1. Pogba, who scored in United’s 1-0 win over Burnley to send them top of the table last week, came to his side’s rescue in the second half. The 27-year-old French
midfielder received the ball outside of the box and managed to find space from two Fulham players before unleashing a bending strike past Alphonse Areola. Fulham were unable to snatch back an equaliser as United took home an important three points in the nail-biting Premier League title race. United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer told BT Sport after the 2-1 win: “I think we started slow, but after their goal I felt we played well. We needed to wake up and after that we played really well. “Fantastic goal by Paul and we had some other chances to finish the game, but, of course, when it is just one goal and the players
they put on, it is going to be like heart in your mouth. “He [Pogba] has really come on. He is fit, he can play in midfield and he can play wide. That is key with Paul, getting him match fit and running fit and he is at the moment. He played very well.” United move two points clear at the top of the table ahead of Manchester City, though Pep Guardiola’s men have a match in hand. The Red Devils will return to action on Sunday when they welcome Liverpool to Old Trafford for their fourth-round FA Cup clash. Solskjaer’s men will resume their Premier League campaign next Wednesday as they host Sheffield United at Old Trafford.

ATK Mohun Bagan beat Chennaiyin 1-0 in ISL
MARGAO (GOA), JAN 21 (IANS): A 90th minute goal from substitute David Williams helped ATK Mohun Bagan earn a scrappy 1-0 win over Chennaiyin FC at the Fatorda Stadium on Thursday. Williams’s late headed effort helped Bagan move to 24 points, just two behind leaders Mumbai City FC. Both sides made a couple of changes coming into the game. Chennaiyin’s Deepak Tangri and Thoi Singh started in place of Anirudh Thapa and Edwin Vanspaul while Javier Hernandez and Manvir Singh were preferred over David Williams and Prabir Das by Habas. The first half was evenly contested with both defences blocking each other out. Though there were few chances created, Bagan were marginally the better team. Habas’s team sounded early warnings. After getting the ball in his own territory, Tiri ran forward and tried his luck from a distance, forcing Chennaiyin keeper Vishal Kaith to pull off a save. Soon Chennaiyin had a chance. Esmael Goncalves dispossessed Carl McHugh and sent Rahim Ali through, but the youngster’s early shot went past the post. Kaith continued with

his rich form and was called into action late in the first quarter. Tiri played an aerial ball to the edge of the box. Edu Garcia headed it inside the box to Hernandez, who hit a first-time volley. But Kaith’s reflexes kept the ball from entering the net. Bagan enjoyed more possession, but play was mostly restricted to the mid-
field. Neither side was able to find the cutting edge in the box in the first session as they walked out goalless at the break. While it was Sandesh Jhingan and Tiri for Bagan, the defensive duo of Enes Sipovic and Tangri was brilliant for Chennaiyin at the back. With 15 minutes left on
the clock, Kaith produced a top-class save to deny Hernandez from taking the lead through a freekick. Lallianzuala Chhangte’s 85th-minute corner nearly put Chennaiyin ahead. But Arindam Bhattacharja made a crucial save before the Chennaiyin players could get to the ball. The match looked to be heading to a draw, but with
minutes left, Bagan took the lead from a set-piece. Hernandez crossed in a perfect inswinging corner and Williams headed in to spark dramatic celebrations in the Bagan dug-out. Friday’s Match SC East Bengal Vs Mumbai City Time: 7:30 PM

Ronaldo becomes top goalscorer in football history ROME, JAN 21 (IANS): Cristiano Ronaldo has become the top goalscorer in football history as his Juventus side won the Italian Super Cup (Supercoppa) for the ninth time, beating Napoli 2-0 in the final at Mapei Stadium. Victory for the Bianconeri came on Wednesday evening despite a shaky performance in Serie A, with the defending champions currently ranking only fifth in the 2020-21 table, reports Xinhua news agency. The Supercoppa is a traditional clash between the previous season’s Serie A and Coppa Italia winners. Juventus was missing Paulo Dybala, Matthijs de Ligt and Alex Sandro, but Juan Cuadrado returned to the starting line-up after recovering from Covid-19. Meanwhile, Napoli had to do without Victor Osimhen and Fabian Ruiz. Juventus dominated possession in the first half, but Napoli had the best chance in the 29th minute when Diego Demme rolled across from the left and Hirving Lozano’s diving header forced a stunning save from Wojciech Szc-

zesny. Fe d e r i c o C h i e s a picked up an injury, making way for Federico Bernardeschi who almost found the net right after the interval. Juventus started to lay siege to Napoli’s goal as time wore on, and it paid off in the 64th minute when a corner bounced off Tiemoue Bakayoko and bobbled kindly for Ronaldo to sweep in from pointblank range. It was his 760th career goal for club and country, making him the top goalscorer of all-time, surpassing the record of 759 set by Josef Bican. “Very happy with my 4th title in Italy...We are back! This is the Juve we
love, this is the team we trust and this is the spirit that will lead to the wins we want! Well done, guys,” Ronaldo tweeted after the win. Lorenzo Insigne should have scored an equalizer and his 100th goal for Napoli, but the captain missed a penalty earned by Dries Mertens in the 80th minute. Juve punished Napoli deep into stoppage time, as after a textbook counter, Cuadrado surged forward and squared for Alvaro Morata to seal the win. The Supercoppa is Juventus’ first title in the current 2020-21 season, and also Andrea Pirlo’s maiden trophy as a head coach.
Brooklyn Nets’ ‘Big Three’ outshone IOC president Bach says ‘no Abu Dhabi HSBC C’ship: Rory McIlroy by Cleveland Cavaliers’ Collin Sexton Plan B’ for Tokyo Games: Kyodo shoots eight-under-par 64 to lead
Cleveland Cavaliers guard Collin Sexton (2) drives to the basket in the third quarter against the Brooklyn Nets.
OHIO (USA), JAN 21 (AGENCIES): A Brooklyn Nets team featuring James Harden, Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving playing together for the first time lost 147-135 to the Cleveland Cavaliers after second overtime. ‘The Big Three’, among the current highest paid NBA stars, played more than 48 minutes and combined for 28 points in
the fourth quarter. But Collin Sexton scored a career-high 42 points to win it for the Cavaliers. He also scored a threepointer with 1.2 seconds left in the first overtime. Durant led the Nets’ scoring with 38 points, but missed a potential gamewinning shot at the buzzer in the first overtime as the Nets lost a five-point lead
with just under two minutes remaining and saw a four-game winning streak ended. The Nets are fifth in the Eastern Conference with nine wins and seven defeats and the Cavaliers are one place below them. Centre Joel Embiid scored 42 points and managed 10 rebounds as Eastern Conference leaders the Philadelphia 76ers overcame the Boston Celtics 117-109. Tobias Harris added 22 points for the Sixers, who have won eight of nine at home. The Los Angeles Clippers took advantage of city rivals the Lakers’ slip-up on Tuesday with a 115-96 victory over the Sacramento Kings to go top of the Western Conference. K aw h i L e o n a r d produced a man-of-thematch performance with 32 points, six steals and five assists as the Clippers recorded their fifth consecutive win.

TOKYO, JAN 21 (AGENCIES): There is “no Plan B” for the Tokyo Games, says International Olympic Committee President Thomas Bach, who reaffirmed his commitment to holding the showpiece event this year in an interview with Kyodo News on Thursday. After the Games were postponed last year because of the global novel coronavirus pandemic, Saturday marks six months until the rearranged Olympics are due to start on July 23. Despite dwindling public support and a surge in coronavirus cases across the world, organisers are adamant the
Games will go ahead. “We have at this moment, no reason whatsoever to believe that the Olympic Games in Tokyo will not open on the 23rd of July in the Olympic stadium in Tokyo,” Bach told Kyodo News. “This is why there is no Plan B and this is why we are fully committed to make these Games safe and successful,” he added. With the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics on the horizon and rapidly escalating costs further reducing public support, Tokyo organisers have repeatedly ruled out postponing the Games again.
ABU DHABI, JAN 21 (AGENCIES): Rory McIlroy hit a bogey-free eightunder-par 64 to set the clubhouse lead midway through the opening round of the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship. The Northern Irishman leads by one from England’s Tyrrell Hatton who had two eagles and three birdies in his 65. Defending champion Lee Westwood, who won last year’s European Tour Race to Dubai, opened with a three-under 69. American Justin Thomas, who was three over after his first six holes, finished on one over. The world number three is the highest ranked player in the field and is playing his first event since making a homophobic comment in Hawaii that saw him dropped by a sponsor, despite apologising for his “inexcusable” remark. World number six McIlroy

is competing in his first tournament of 2021 and his first European Tour event in 14 months. The 31-year-old is returning to the event, which is now the first of four Rolex Series tournaments on The European Tour, after a gap of two years. McIlroy, who did not win in 2020, has finished second four times and third on three occasions in 10 appearances at the event in the United Arab Emirates.
He started strongly with four birdies in his first nine holes and added a further four on his second nine. “It feels good. I knew 65 was the best I have shot here and I’ve shot it a few times but after I turned in four under I said to myself, ‘let’s go one better and shoot another four under on the next nine’ and I was able to do that,” said McIlroy after his round.
Thailand Open: Sindhu, Sameer sail into quarterfinals Demands for Australian Open players BA N G KO K , JA N 2 1 (PTI): Indian shuttlers P V Sindhu and Sameer Verma stormed into the quarterfinals of the Toyota Thailand Open after registering straight-game wins but HS Prannoy bowed out of Super 1000 tournament here on Tuesday. Olympic silver medallist Sindhu expectedly outclassed Malaysia’s world no. 92 Kisona Selvaduray 21-10 21-12 in a lop-sided second-round contest that lasted just 35 minutes. She will face either Thailand’s Ratchanok Inthanon or Korea’s Sung Ji Hyun next. “The first game was pretty easy and in the second, I had to play with the wind and really control my strokes. I made some simple errors in the second game and they were ones I should not have made at all. There was too much wind in the second game and I was being careful,” Sindhu said. “I was remembering last week’s tournament and each point was really important for me. We all win and lose, so I took last week in a really positive way and came in much stronger this week. Overall,
P V Sindhu and Sameer Verma
it’s a good win and I’m really looking forward to the next round.” World no. 31 Sameer also continued his impressive run, stunning world no. 17 Rasmus Gemke 2112 21-9 in just 39 minutes for his third victory over the Danish player. The Indian, who had shocked Malaysia’s eighth seed Lee Zii Jia in the opening round, will face third seed Anders Antonsen of Denmark, who received a walkover, in the quarterfinals. “I was very confident
before the match. I came prepared. Next up I have Anders Antonsen from Denmark. I’m feeling very confident, so let’s see. It will be tough but I will play my best,” Sameer said. The mixed doubles pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Ashwini Ponnappa also made it to the quarterfinals with a stunning 22-20 14-21 21-16 win over world no. 17 German duo of Mark Lamsfuss and Isabel Herttrich in a match that lasted close to an hour. Satwiksairaj also
paired up with Chirag Shetty in the men’s doubles to notch up an upset 21-18 23-21 win over seven seeds Korean combination of Choi Solgyu and Seo Seung Jae. “We served and received pretty well, that made the difference for us. Overall, we are getting back to the way we were playing in 2019,” said Chirag. Satwik said he was “very happy with the performance.” “We want to play our game. We want to be our best on the day. We were
lacking in service and returns in our last match. We didn’t want to make the same mistakes in this match,” he said. Prannoy, however, failed to cross the second round hurdle, going down 17-21 18-21 to Malaysia’s Daren Liew, a day after battling through pain to upstage Asian Games champion Jonatan Christie in a gruelling three-game match. Also bowing out of the competition were MR Arjun and Dhruv Kapila after losing 9-21 11-21 to English pair of Ben Lane and Sean Vendy. Earlier, Gemke was no match for Sameer, who showed better control and execution to dominate the proceedings right from the beginning. The Indian opened up a 3-0 lead and kept marching ahead to grab a six-point advantage at the break. Gemke tried his best but couldn’t trouble Sameer, who easily claimed the first game. In the second game, Gemke managed to hold slender leads of 3-1 and 5-3 but Sameer broke off at 6-6 and never looked back.
‘misconstrued’, says Novak Djokovic
CANBERRA, JAN 21 (IANS): World number one Novak Djokovic said his demands for tennis players in quarantine ahead of the Australian Open were “misconstrued”. In an open letter to the Australian public published from hotel quarantine in South Australia, Djokovic defended his “good intentions”, reports Xinhua news agency. It comes after the eight-time Australian Open champion was widely criticised after issuing a list of demands for players in quarantine to Australian Open chief Craig Tiley, including shorter quarantine periods and “moving as many players as possible” to houses with private tennis courts. Djokovic said that his letter to Tiley was taken the wrong way. “My good intentions for my fellow competitors in Melbourne have been misconstrued as being selfish, difficult and ungrateful,” he said. “This couldn’t be farther from the truth.” More than 70 players competing in the Austra-

lian Open have been confined to their hotel rooms for 14 days after fellow passengers on their charter flights to Melbourne tested positive for Covid-19. Other players including Djokovic, who will compete in an exhibition tournament in Adelaide before heading to Melbourne, are allowed out of their rooms for five hours per day to train. “I genuinely care about my fellow players and I also understand very well how the world is run
and who gets bigger and better and why,” Djokovic said in his letter. “I’ve earned my privileges the hard way and for that reason, it is very difficult for me to be a mere onlooker knowing how much every help, gesture and good word mattered to me when I was small and insignificant in the world pecking order. “Hence, I use my position of privilege to be of service as much as I can where and when needed,” he added.
