Govt-farmers talks hit roadblock
Farmers threaten to intensify protest
Govt says no further concessions to offer NEW DELHI, JAN 22 (PTI): The government’s negotiations with representatives of thousands of protesting farmers hit a roadblock on Friday as the unions squarely rejected the Centre’s proposal to put three contentious laws on hold, while the Agriculture Minister blamed external “forces” for their rigid stand and said no resolution is possible when the sanctity of agitation is lost. Unlike the last 10 rounds of talks, the 11th round saw both the sides hardening their positions and could not even reach a decision on the next date for the meeting. The government asked unions to revert by Saturday in case they agree to the suspension proposal and the talks can continue only thereafter. This followed a big climbdown made by the Centre in the last round of talks on Wednesday when it

offered to suspend the laws for 1-1.5 years and form a joint committee to find solutions, in return for protesting farmers going back to their respective homes. Farmer leaders, however, said they would settle for nothing less than a complete repeal of the laws, enacted in September last year, which they find pro-corporate, and a legal guarantee for the procurement of crops at government-fixed minimum support price. The unions said they will intensify their agitation now and alleged that the government’s approach was not right during the meeting. They also said their tractor rally will go ahead as per the plans on January 26 and
unions have told the police that it is the government’s responsibility to maintain peace. While the meeting lasted for almost five hours, the two sides sat face to face for not even half an hour. The three Central ministers, including Agriculture minister Narendra Singh Tomar, urged the representatives to reconsider their stand, after which the two sides went for a break that lasted for more than three hours. After the meeting, Bharatiya Kisan Union (Ugrahan) leader Joginder Singh Ugrahan said the discussions have broken down as the unions rejected the government’s proposal. Another farmer leader Rakesh Tikait said the min-
isters said the suspension period can be increased to up to two years, but the unions remained firm on their demand for a complete repeal and a legal guarantee for MSP. Agriculture minister Narendra Singh Tomar told the farmers that they have been given all possible options and they must discuss internally the proposal of suspending the laws. Tomar said the unions have been asked to revert till Saturday if they agree to the government’s proposal for putting the laws on hold and forming a joint committee to reach a solution, after which the talks can continue. Farmer leaders allege conspiracy hatched to kill 4 of them: Protesting farmer leaders Friday alleged that a conspiracy has been hatched to kill four of them and create disturbance during their proposed tractor rally on January 26. At a late night press conference at Singhu border, the farmer leaders presented a person who claimed that during the tractor rally, his team members were allegedly asked to pose as policemen and baton-charge on the crowd.

In-service doctors to sport black armbands as protest from Monday Correspondent
KOHIMA, JAN 22 (NPN): Nagaland In-service Doctors’ Association (NIDA) members will sport black armbands from Monday onwards in protest against the State government’s lack of response to their demands. Announcing this at a press conference at Hotel Japfü here on Friday after an emergency meeting, NIDA president Dr E Phyantsuthung said the association had issued and reissued several memorandums to the government asking it to implement the commitment made by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He recalled that, citing shortage of doctors in the country, Modi had during his speech at Saharanpur in Uttar Pradesh on May 25, 2016 declared raising the age of retirement (superannuation) of government doctors from the present 60 to 65 in order to meet the shortfall of doctors faced all over the country. He claimed that this decision has been imple-

mented in every State, including the North-eastern States. However Nagaland was yet to implement this and the State government had cited vague reasons as to why this could not be implemented, he disclosed. The NIDA president said the association had submitted a memorandum to the government in 2017, but did not follow it up due to several problems plaguing the State then as NIDA thought it would be wise to not pursue the issue then. Thereafter, the general elections of 2018 followed, he pointed out. He explained that the issue thus remained unresolved, even as COVID-19 pandemic broke out for which the doctors had to focus on the pandemic.
Phyantsuthung said as the government failed to respond to another NIDA memorandum submitted in October 2020, the same memorandum was resubmitted on January 7, 2021, which also went unheeded. “All these have forced us to register our resentment against the State government by putting on black arm-bands while carrying out our daily duties at our respective places of posting,” he remarked. And staying true to its motto “Service to Humanity”, he said NIDA would ensure that no healthcare activities were disrupted during the entire duration of the symbolic protest, adding that all doctors would carry out their regular du(Cont’d on p-8) ties.
GHC notice on State govt over non- After row at meeting, Cong decides State COVID tally 12072 implementation of SBM scheme to elect new party president in June COVID-19 STATUS AS ON jan 22, 2021
DIMAPUR, JAN 22 (NPN): Gauhati High Court (GHC) has issued notice to Centre, Nagaland government and others in a plea filed by the petitioner-- Society (Global Trust Club), Chizami on the issue of non-implementation of schemes under Swachh Bharat Mission in the State of Nagaland. According to LiveLaw report, the bench of Chief Justice Sudhanshu Dhulia and Justice Achintya Malla Bujor Barua heard the plea (public interest litigation), alleging non-implementation of schemes such as Swachh Bharat Mission in Nagaland in spite of funds being given by the Centre for the said purposes. The petitioner alleged that as a result of this, development work, particularly relating to supply of drinking water to rural areas and other such works of public purposes were not being properly implemented in the State of Nagaland.
After hearing the parties, the Court, while issuing notice of motion returnable in four weeks, said: “We are, prima facie, of the opinion that the petition raises an issue of public importance. Consequently, we issue notices in this case.” The respondents-- Union of India, State government represented by secretary Public Health Engineering (PHE) department, Chief Engineer PHE, executive engineer PHE and SDO PHE, PHEK SubDivision have been asked to file their counter affidavit within a period of three weeks. It may be noted that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had launched the ‘Swachh Bharat Abhiyan’ (Clean India Mission) on 2nd October 2014 to accelerate the efforts to achieve universal sanitation coverage and to put the focus on sanitation. The ‘Abhiyan’ was launched on the occasion of Mahatma Gandhi’s 145th birth anniversary.
NEW DELHI, JAN 22 (AGENCIES): A new Congress president will be elected in June after five state elections, it was decided at a party meeting today after an argument between two groups, during which Rahul Gandhi reportedly said: “Once and for all, finish it and move on.” The Congress Working Committee (CWC) has decided that there will be a new elected Congress president in June 2021, KC Venugopal told reporters after a meeting of the party’s top decision-making body. At the CWC meeting, senior leaders Ghulam Nabi Azad, Anand Sharma, Mukul Wasnik and P Chidambaram reportedly asked for immediate organisational polls. They are among the Congress leaders who have raised uncomfortable questions over the party’s leadership and management in
recent months after multiple election defeats. Ranged against them were the so-called Gandhi loyalists -- Ashok Gehlot, Amarinder Singh, AK Antony, Tariq Anwar and Oommen Chandy, who said the Congress president’s election should be held after polls in five states including Bengal and Tamil Nadu. One leader commented: “Whose agenda are we working towards? The BJP doesn’t talk about internal elections like our party? The first priority is to fight the state elections then organisational elections.” Finally, the second group prevailed. The dates for the election of a Congress president and the CWC will be announced shortly and Sonia Gandhi will take the final decision, leaders said. The last election to the CWC was held in 1997. The next president will
be chosen at a time the leadership of the Gandhis has come under unprecedented scrutiny and attacks within. Sonia Gandhi, who took over as interim president in 2019 after her son Rahul Gandhi stepped down over the Congress’s national election drubbing in 2019, has made it clear that she is not in the running. So has Rahul Gandhi, who has stubbornly refused to reconsider his resignation and has maintained that a non-Gandhi should be given a chance. But while the Gandhis have declined the top job, they continue to be the centre of power in the Congress. No big decision is taken without their signoff. A section of leaders have, since last year, raised their voice against the leadership but they have failed to draw the support of the party at large.

Hq administrative centre to SDO (Civil), which was subsequently shifted to Angjangyang village, but had to be transferred to Angjangyang as the village was not feasible to be an administrative centre. However, they said that after a few years, due to public agitation and demand for reversion, the Longching EAC Hg, had been reinstated. During 1996 and 2004, the signatories said Mopong Hongkong public submitted the memorandum for the “up-gradation” of Mopong EAC Hq to SDO (Civil) Hq with verification report of the deputy commissioner (DC) Mon. However, when the Longching EAC Hq was
relinquished, they said Mopong EAC Hq circle villages were transferred under Angjangyang SDO (Civil) Hq administration without the knowledge of the MLAs of 55 Tabu and 48 Moka assembly constituencies and without consulting the Mopong circle public. Due to which, the forum said the Mopong Hongkong public and leaders of NGOs have been demanding retention of the same. MHPF has, therefore, appealed to high powered committee members for “Retention of EAC Hq Mopong” to address the demand in the interest of the Mopong Hongkong public and convenience of administration.

Modi, Shah to visit pollbound Assam today Guwahati, Jan 22 (IANS): Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah will visit poll-bound Assam on Saturday to attend different government events to campaign for the assembly polls, likely to be held in April-May. Officials and BJP sources said that Modi and Shah do not have any common programme in the Bharatiya Janata Party ruled state. The Prime Minister on Saturday would launch a mega programme of the Assam government to distribute land “patta” (land allotment permit) to over one lakh landless indigenous people at a function at Jerenga Pothar in eastern Assam’s Sivasagar district. Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, who visited the PM’s meeting venue to review the preparations, said that the Prime Minister would ceremonially start the distribution of land ‘patta’ to more than one lakh indigenous people who have been living uncertain lives for decades. “No government in Assam has carried out such a people-friendly initiative in the past.”
Narendra Modi and Amit Shah
He said many pieces of government land were encroached by suspected illegal settlers and the BJP government would evict those illegal encroachers and provide the land rights to the indigenous people, comprising tribals, ex-tea garden labourers and other backward communities. According to the officials, the state government headed by the Chief Minister Sonowal has already issued “land patta” to more than one lakh landless indigenous families. Officials said Shah would launch the Ayushman Bharat healthcare scheme for central paramilitary force personnel in Guwahati in presence of
Union Health and Family Welfare Minister Harsh Vardhan here on Saturday. After attending the Guwahati event, Shah would go to Shillong where he would chair the 69th plenary session of the North Eastern Council (NEC), the nodal agency for the socio-economic and infrastructural development of the eight states of the region. Shah would come back again in Assam on Sunday and attend a programme to celebrate the first anniversary of the signing of the Bodoland Territorial Region Accord, which facilitates political autonomy and address a gathering in western Assam’s Kokrajhar, bordering West Bengal.

AASU takes out torch rally to protest against CAA
GUWAHATI, JAN 22 (AGENCIES): All Assam Students Union (AASU) on Friday took out torchlight processions pressing for their demands, including scrapping of the Citizenship Amendment Act, days before Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah set foot in the state, The New Indian Express report stated. AASU is also in favor of repealing the Environmental Impact Assessment Act, and implementation of the report of the Committee on Clause 6 of the Assam Accord, which safeguards the constitutional rights of indigenous people. In Guwahati, police barricaded the AASU headquarters ‘Swahid Bhawan’ and did not allow the protesters to move out with torchlights, but the students’ body staged their protest behind the barriers. AASU advisor Samujjal Bhattacharya and president Dipanka Kumar Nath were seen engaged in a heated argument with police officers, who said the rally would be allowed if they handed over the torchlights. “We refuse to hand over the torchlights as this was a part of our protest program and we will not change it. We, time and again, assured the authorities that our agitation

will be non-violent, democratic and peaceful but the BJP government is scared as they failed the people of Assam,” Bhattacharya said. He was particularly critical of chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal, who was AASU president when Bhattacharya was its general secretary, for sending police to quell the protest. “It was from Swahid Bhawan that Sonowal reached the CM’s office and now he is sending force to stop democratic and peaceful protests. This is shameful and we condemn this,” he said. “AASU had taken out torchlight processions since the Assam movement against foreigners and no dispensation stopped it. This is the first government to take such
a step, and this proves that the CM is a coward and his government is afraid of nonviolent and democratic protest,” Bhattacharya said. The protesters shouted slogans against Modi, Shah, and Sonowal and demanded that CAA and EIA be repealed along with the implementation of the report of the Clause Six Committee. PM had assured AASU that the recommendations of the committee will be implemented to the “last comma and full stop, but it will be nearly a year now that the report was submitted, and no action has been taken so far”, he alleged. “The constitutional safeguard under Clause 6 of Assam Accord is our democratic right and not any charity by the prime min-
ister or the home minister. Our protests will continue till these demands are fulfilled,” AASU asserted. Protestors clash with police: Four AASU members were injured in a clash with the police who stopped them from taking out the torch rally at Tezpur, following which the district unit of the students organisation called for a 12-hour Sonitpur Bandh, leaders of the students’ body said. AASU will stage protests in all district and subdivisional headquarters by covering their faces with a black cloth during Modi’s visit on Saturday, and observe ‘Black Day’ on January 24 by burning copies of the CAA during the home minister’s visit.
China village in Arunachal: NCP questions Centre
Mumbai, Jan 22 (PTI): The NCP on Friday targeted the Centre over the media reports about China building a village in Arunachal Pradesh, and asked sarcastically whether Prime Minister Narendra Modi was implementing a special housing scheme for the neighbouring country. Maharashtra NCP chief spokesperson Mahesh Tapase said the Centre will have to give an explanation on the issue. “The China has already infiltrated Ladakh. Now, it has built a village of 101 homes in India’s Arunachal Pradesh,” Tapase said, citing media reports. The NCP leader questioned how come one did not notice China’s reported construction of homes in Indian territory. And in case one did, why no action was taken then, he asked. “Is Prime Minister Modi implementing a special housing scheme for China? The Centre will have to give an explanationon the issue,” Tapase said. In a cautious reaction to a report that China has built a village in Arunachal Pradesh, India on Monday said it keeps a constant watch on all developments having a bearing on the country’s security, and takes necessary measures to safeguard its sovereignty and territorial integrity.
Security beefed in Manipur ahead of R-Day 6 workers from Assam killed Conrad Sangma-led delegation in Meghalaya mine accident to meet Shah over ILP demand
IMPHAL, Jan 22: Security measures in the restive state of Manipur, particularly in the twin capital districts were intensified to ensure smooth conduct of the upcoming Republic Day celebrations. Besides conducting combing operations at sensitive areas of the twin districts including the city’s busy areas for the past few days, the police have intensified round-the-clock patrolling in and around the core area of the capital. Frisking and checking operations in the roads leading to the capital city were also intensified in the backdrop of boycott calls given by various rebel groups. In the intensified security measures taken in Imphal East district, one of the twin capital districts, police commandos arrested a man with a revolver who alleg-
edly indulged in prejudicial activities by posing as police personnel. The man identified as Md Abdul Sahid @ Nanao (35) son of Md Abdul Kalam of Kiyamgei Muslim Awang Leikai of Imphal East was arrested by a team of police commandos during a cordon search operation in Khabeisoi area under Heingang police station of Imphal East district last night, around 11.45 pm. PM addresses Tezpur University convocation Tezpur, Jan 21 (PTI): Invoking the young Indian cricket team’s remarkable victory in Australia and the country’s fight against COVID-19, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Friday the spirit of ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ pervades all spheres and has become a part of everyday lives of people. Modi said the fight against COVID-19 made the slogan of ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ not only a part of popular vocabulary but also encapsulated the nation’s dreams, hopes, its motivation and determination to deal with the crisis. A change of approach and perspective to meet every challenge differently and with determination became visible, he said. “This change was also visible on the cricket field when the Indian team lost disastrously but fought back with confidence and determination in the next match to beat a much more experienced Australian team. “The players turned adversity into opportunity, creating history with their talent and temperament. Their performance is important not only in the history of sports but also gave us three life lessons. The first being trust and self-confidence, then the need for a positive mindset, and finally, the will to explore if there is a possibility of victory and go for it,” he said.

Several types of equipmentwere damaged in the blaze, he said. “On the basis of findings from all the agencies, a conclusion will be reached on a how the fire started,” he added. The PMRDA officer declined to speculate on possible causes of the fire at this juncture. S a n t o s h Wa r r i c k , Chief Fire Officer, MIDC, also said it is difficult to comment on the cause right now. “We have started the probe. Our scope of investigation is to check how the fire broke out,” said Prashant Ranpise, PMC’s fire department head. A team of forensic experts reached the spot and conducting their probe, said another official. The Manjari facility is where Covishield, the SII vaccine against COVID19, which is being used in the nationwide inoculation drive against the infection, is made. The building where fire broke out is one km from the Covishield vaccine manufacturing unit.

Over 10 lakh beneficiaries vaccinated against COVID
New Delhi, Jan 22 (PTI): Nearly 10.5 lakh beneficiaries have received anti-coronavirus shots under the countrywide COVID-19 vaccination exercise as on date, the Union Health Ministry said on Friday. In a span of 24 hours, 2,37,050 people were vaccinated across 4,049 sessions. A total of 18,167 sessions have been conducted so far. On the testing front too, India continues to register growing numbers, the ministry said. The expansion in testing infrastructure has given a boost in India’s fight against the global pandemic. The cumulative testing has crossed 19 crore, it underlined. A total of 8,00,242 samples were tested for COVID-19 in a span of 24 hours which has increased India’s total cumulative tests to 19,01,48,024. “Comprehensive and widespread testing on a sustained basis has resulted in bringing down the positivity rate. The cumulative Positivity Rate stands at 5.59 per cent as of today,” the ministry said. Steadily following the trend set over the past weeks, India’s active caseload has fallen to 1.78 per cent of the total cases. India’s Active Caseload
presently stands at 1,88,688. A total of 18,002 new recoveries were registered in a span of 24 hours. This has led to a net decline of 3,620 cases from the total COVID19 active caseload in a day. The total recovered cases have surged to 10,283,708 pushing the growing gap between the recovered and the active cases to 1,00,95,020 ( 54.5 times). The ministry said that 84.70 per cent of the new recovered cases are contributed by ten states and UTs. Kerala saw 6,229 persons recovering from COVID. Maharashtra and Karnataka reported 3,980 and 815 new recoveries, respectively. A total of 14,545 new positive cases were registered in a span of 24 hours. Eight states and UTs have contributed 84.14 per cent of the new cases. Kerala reported 6,334 cases in a span of 24 hours. Maharashtra recorded 2,886 new cases, while Karnataka registered 674 daily cases. Over 82 per cent of the 163 case fatalities that have been reported in the past 24 hours are from nine states and UTs. Maharashtra has reported the maximum new daily deaths with 52 deaths. Kerala also saw a fatality count of 21.
Replica of Ram temple to be showcased in Uttar Pradesh’s Republic Day tableau NEW DELHI, JAN 22 (PTI): Ancient city Ayodhya’s heritage, replica of a Ram temple, glimpse of ‘Deepotsav’ and various stories from Ramayana epic have been depicted in the tableau of Uttar Pradesh which will be showcased in the Republic Day parade on January 26. The bedecked tableau is fronted by a sitting model of Maharishi Valmiki and the temple model is on the rear side, officials said on Friday. “Ayodhya is our holy place and the Ram temple issue has been an emotive one for the faithful. Our tableau will showcase the ancient heritage of the town, revered by countless people across the country,” an official of the Uttar Pradesh government, accompanying the state team, said. A group of artistes, including two women dancers will be part of the tableau and one person will be dressed up as Lord Ram. A media preview of the various tableaux, including a total of 18 states and union territories, was held at the Republic Day’s cultural camp at Delhi Cantonment on Friday. A j ay Ku m a r, w h o

Ayodhya’s Deepotsav celebrations with earthen lamps is depicted on one side of the tableau, while other murals show embracing of Nishadraj by Lord Ram and eating of Shabri’s berry by him, salvation of Ahilya, bringing of Sanje-
evani by Lord Hanuman, Jatayu-Ram samvad, Ashok Vatika and other scenes. On November 9, 2019, the Supreme Court had settled the fractious Ramjanmabhoomi-Babri Masjid issue going back more than a century and backed the construction of a Ram temple by a trust at the disputed site. It also ruled that an alternative five-acre plot must be found for a mosque in the Hindu holy town. Prime Minister Narendra Modi last August had performed the ‘bhoomi pujan’ of a Supreme Courtmandated Ram temple in Ayodhya, bringing to fruition the BJP’s mandir movement that defined its politics for three decades and took it to the heights of power.
PUNE, JAN 22 (PTI): Top officials from fire wings of three Maharashtra government agencies on Friday launched a probe to ascertain the cause of the blaze that killed five workers at Serum Institute of India’s premises here. Heads of fire departments of the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC), Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) and Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC) are part of the joint probe team. Five contractual labourers had died in the fire which broke out in a five-storeyed under-construction building in the Serum Institute of India’s Manjari premises on
Thursday. The fire damaged the top two floors of the building located in ‘SEZ 3’ area of the premises of the vaccine major. Devendra Potphode, Chief Fire Officer, PMRDA, said officials from the planning and development authority, PMC, and MIDC have come together to ascertain the cause of the fire in the building. Meanwhile, police have registered an accidental death and burning incident case with the Hadapsar police station, said Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone 5) Namrata Patil. “As we are seeing today, theentire floor (4th and 5th) has been damaged. Indians trust Covid vaccine the most, 80% Phase 1 trial results show Covaxin has safety: Lancet willing to get inoculated: Global survey NEW DELHI, JAN 22 (AGENCIES): Over one million people have been administered shots of Covid-19 vaccine in India in less than a week since the nationwide vaccination drive began in the country, reports The Times of India. The vaccination drive began on a high note when the country administered shots to over 2 lakh people in a single day, setting the first day global record. However, over the course of the week, there were multiple reports on vaccine-related hesitancy among health workers. In several states, many healthcare workers have either failed to turn up or refused to get vaccinated in the first week of the panIndia drive.
This is due to reasons such as glitches in the CoWin app, apprehensions about Covaxin in the absence of stage 3 trial data and general concerns over side-effects which are expected in the initial stages of the programme. But compared to other countries, Indians are among the most trusting when it comes to Covid-19 vaccines, according to a latest survey. As many as eight in 10 Indians are willing to roll up their sleeves for a Covid vaccine shot, according to a survey by Edelman PR’s Trust Barometer 2021. Among 28 countries, including the US, UK, Germany and Russia, India recorded the highest percentage of people who trust the Covid-19 vaccine. The survey said that
around 51% Indians are ready to take the vaccine as soon as possible while 29% said they would get inoculated within six months to one year. It revealed that vaccine hesitancy in India is far lower than several Western nations, including the worst-affected United States. In the US, only 59% people said they are willing to get vaccinated against Covid-19.
of Virology (NIV), Pune, the vaccine has been granted emergency use authorisation in clinical trial mode’ by the Indian government. Covaxin, which is now undergoing phase-3 trials, had raised concerns among experts over its emergency approval earlier this month by India’s drug regulator. The vaccine, codenamed BBV152, was well tolerated in all dose groups with no vaccine-related serious adverse events, noted the authors of the study
funded by Bharat Biotech. The same results were earlier published in the preprint server medRxiv in December. However, there has been no new data released in the public domain which could demonstrate further safety and efficacy of the preventive. The authors said that all adverse events were mild and moderate, and were more frequent after the first dose, adding that one adverse event was reported but was unrelated to the vaccine. The randomised
phase 1 trial to assess the safety and immunogenicity of BBV152 was carried at 11 hospitals across India. Adults aged 18-55 years who were deemed healthy by the investigator were eligible. Between July 13 and 30, last year, 827 participants were screened, of whom 375 were enrolled. Among the enrolled participants, 100 each were randomly assigned to the three vaccine groups, and 75 were randomly assigned to the control group.

Becoming the news

rnabgate is the latest controversy that has exploded in public domain, after WhatsApp chats between Republic TV Editor-in-Chief and owner Arnab Goswami and Partho Dasgupta, the former chief executive officer of Broadcast Audience Research Council(BARC) was disclosed by Mumbai Police. The chat revealed that three days before the Indian Air Force carried out a strike targeting a Jaishe-Mohammad training camps in the Pakistani town of Balakot, Goswami had told Partho Dasgupta, that it would be “bigger than a normal strike.” This confirms that Arnab had access to a very highly confidential information privy to only a handful in the government. There is no doubt that someone in the government had violated the Official Secrets Act by sharing this confidential information with Arnab. On his part, Arnab committed a breach of national security and violation of Official Secrets Act by sharing this information in writing with another person and for which he ought to have been brought to book. The WhatsApp chats in question, are part of the supplementary chargesheet that the Mumbai Police filed in the Television Rating Points(TRP) scam case and for which Dasgupta and Arnab are being probed. The chats have raised several questions and revealed Arnab had prior information on the Balakot air strike and what was to happen in Kashmir in August, 2019 among other sensitive news. The issue also brings to light that large sections of media organizations today are being bought and owned and controlled by political and business conglomerates who use the channels and newspapers to undermine their opposition. The opposition have demanded immediate action and asked the Modi government to set up a Joint Parliamentary Committee to probe the purported WhatsApp chats. The ruling government has neither reacted to the demands or the chats. Even a majority of the media have not addressed the issue in the same manner as they did with the Sushant Singh Rajput case. This aspect has reveals that the media has become prey to the vested interests of corporate houses and powerful politicians. Independent Indian journalists find it increasingly difficult to report freely in the current political environment where “ultra-nationalism” has dominated the media landscape. Indian media, in particular the electronic media, has grown and evolved during the past few years and at the same time, there has been a significant shift brought about by corporate and political influences on journalists. India once prided itself on a vibrant and diverse press, but analysts say it has taken a completely opposite direction in the past few years. The Indian media industry has massively expanded since the 1990s. There are now more than 100,000 registered newspapers and magazines as well as over 400 news channels in various languages. According to reports, some 150 news channels are awaiting clearance from the government. However, such large numbers of media outlets have not guaranteed more freedom of press in the country. The façade of patriotic and nationalist journalism has been exposed where it is freedom of the press to attack critics of the government and an anti national act to attack the government. Now that having been ripped by the chats ‘ArnabGate’ proves that the power and influence has tipped the scales in the media.
DailyDevotion Am I Looking To God?
Look to Me, and be saved… —Isaiah 45:22
Do we expect God to come to us with His blessings and save us? He says, “Look to Me, and be saved….” The greatest difficulty spiritually is to concentrate on God, and His blessings are what make it so difficult. Troubles almost always make us look to God, but His blessings tend to divert our attention elsewhere. The basic lesson of the Sermon on the Mount is to narrow all your interests until your mind, heart, and body are focused on Jesus Christ. “Look to Me….” Many of us have a mental picture of what a Christian should be, and looking at this image in other Christians’ lives becomes a hindrance to our focusing on God. This is not salvation— it is not simple enough. He says, in effect, “Look to Me and you are saved,” not “You will be saved someday.” We will find what we are looking for if we will concentrate on Him. We get distracted from God and irritable with Him while He continues to say to us, “Look to Me, and be saved….” Our difficulties, our trials, and our worries about tomorrow all vanish when we look to God. Wake yourself up and look to God. Build your hope on Him. No matter how many things seem to be pressing in on you, be determined to push them aside and look to Him. “Look to Me….” Salvation is yours the moment you look.

Nagaland Post, Dimapur SATURDAY, JANUARY 23, 2021

s we celebrate the 125th birth anniversary of Netaji on Jan 23, it’s time to give him and the INA their rightful place in the pantheon of freedom fighters On January 23, India begins year-long celebrations of the 125th birth anniversary of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose, an illustrious embodiment of courage and commitment. Bose rose as a colossus during the freedom struggle. He was with the Congress Party during 1921-1940, endearing himself to the young and old alike, and was elected its president twice. A brilliant student, he qualified in the ICS examination in 1921 but resigned to serve the motherland. When he met MK Gandhi for the first time in Bombay’s Mani Bhavan, the difference of approach was evident. Before this meeting, Gandhiji had declared that India should get swaraj within a year, and to get swaraj his stipulation was that 20 lakh spinning wheels should start working! The young and enthusiastic Bose also wanted this to happen but was not convinced that spinning wheels was the way. Afterwards, Bose met Deshbandhu Chittaranjan Das, who was to become his political guru. Bose was, right from the beginning, for total independence; no dominion status, no prolonged delays. When the resolution for civil disobedience and the launch of salt satyagrah was being passed in the Lahore session, only one person — who else but Bose — proposed an amendment: It should not be civil disobedience but a parallel government. Narayan Desai puts it in these words: “The greatness of Subhas
Courage personified
babu is that though he had proposed the amendment, when the salt satyagrah was launched, he said it was very good. We should put all our strength into it.” This indicates the greatness of his persona, and also how much respect he had for Gandhiji and the party discipline. There were differences that eventually led to what could be termed parting of ways. However, the political maturity and single-minded focus of both on the “target” erased any possible bitterness. After a couple of years, Bose and Vithalbhai Patel issued a joint statement from Geneva asserting that our country had progressed a lot using non-violence but now it had stopped; hence “a change of leadership is required”! The hint was obvious; it was aimed at Gandhiji. At Gandhiji’s suggestion, Bose was elected the president of the Congress at the Vithal Nagar session. However, the working committee did not allow him to alter the path. Next year, things were strategically arranged against him but he won the election, defeating Pattabhi Sitaramayya. It was a sad moment in the freedom struggle when Gandhiji wrote that “Pattabhi’s defeat is my defeat”. Bose relinquished the post of the Congress Party president. The story of differences in approach and attitudes between the stalwarts has certain other dimensions that emerged after Bose’s great escape from house arrest to Afghanistan, Russia, Germany, and then to Japan. He raised the Indian National Army (INA) after successfully igniting the patriotic fervour among Indians in the South-East Asia. He founded the Gov-
ernment of India-in-exile. As Commander-in-Chief of the INA, he entered India from the Burmese border. It was for the independence of India and against the might not only of the British but the allied powers! Of the 60,000 INA personnel, 26,000 — as per the official history — were killed. Maulana Azad, in his book ‘India Wins Freedom’, writes about how Netaji ’s great escape and organisational acumen had impacted Gandhiji, who had different views on Bose: “Gandhiji did not express any opinion about the outcome of the war but, during the discussions with him, I felt that he was becoming doubtful about the Allied victory. I saw that Subhas Bose’s escape to Germany had made a great impression on Gandhiji. He had not formally approved many of his actions, but now I found a change in his outlook. Many of his remarks convinced me that he admired the courage and resourcefulness Subhas Bose had displayed in escaping from India. His admiration for Subhas Bose unconsciously coloured his view about the war situation.” Maulana Azad also mentions how a report (which was later found false) about Bose’s death deeply moved Gandhiji along with the entire country: “He sent a condolence message to Subhas Bose’s mother in which he spoke of Subhas in glowing terms.” Sir Stafford Cripps complained to Maulana Azad that he had “not expected a man like Gandhi to speak in such terms about Subhas Bose”. But India endorsed this tribute as culturally and ethically appropriate from a person of Gandhiji’s stature. India had fallen in love with
Bose, had full faith in him, his strategy and the deep wisdom behind alliances, his countrymen endorsed his “neeti” and “niyati” without hesitation. Gandhiji’s message to Bose’s mother was picked up by the media, both nationally and internationally, for the obvious reasons. Louis Fisher, who wrote Gandhiji’s much-acclaimed biography, told him that “all over the world, you have created the impression of being a person on the side of the Japanese”. Gandhiji’s answer must have shocked some of his near and dear ones as well: “Can you show me a greater patriot than him?” What a great example of mutual affection; one calls him the “Father of the Nation”, the other says “show me a greater patriot”! Is there another such example in contemporary history? Today’s leaders could learn a great lesson from this: You may differ but don’t go against each other. It is indeed necessary to understand the chemistry between the two top heroes of the freedom struggle who had diametrically opposite views and approaches, but each knew how valuable the other was for the nation. There was no let-up in the display of greatness from either side. When Bose was in exile and someone close to him was to come to India, he advised the visitor: “If you have any problem or are confused about something, I have just one piece of advice and that is you should go and meet Gandhiji.” Bose had referred to Gandhiji as “Unhi aamader jater janak”; he is the father of our country. Recently, India celebrated 150th birth anni-
versary of Gandhiji; India now prepares to celebrate the 125th birth anniversary of Subhas Chandra Bose. It is time to seriously ponder over the contribution of Bose and the INA in the freedom struggle. Those who claim the mantle of Gandhian legacy and came to power after Independence were, obviously, not as magnanimous as Gandhiji. The way the history of our freedom struggle has been presented to the young and the old could only be cited as “one-sided” and ideologically constrained. Everyone knows what happened to history writing during the past five decades. Now that the official documents exchanged between top-level British officers serving in India are easily verifiable, several new facts and details are emerging which have the potential to put the roles of Bose and the INA in the right perspective. Was it all only ahimsa, civil disobedience and satyagrah? Was the role of revolutionaries, the young martyrs and the INA insignificant? People have made attempts to demand that history writing be freed from ideological constraints; it must re-examine facts that have been subverted and take note of details available through research, new technology and official documents being made public. An example of how important, relevant and necessary this change is could be comprehended by an incident cited in the book ‘Bose: An Indian Samurai’ by Maj Gen (Retd) GD Bakshi. The final decisionmaker on the withdrawal of the British rule from India was UK Prime Minister Clement Attlee. After demitting office, Attlee
visited India in 1956 and was the guest of Justice PB Chakraborty, the then Governor of West Bengal. Justice Chakraborty asked Attlee that since the Quit India Movement had fizzled out by 1944, why did the British leave India after the war? Attlee replied that it was “because of Bose’s INA and the mutinies it triggered in the British Indian armed forces”. On what was the role of the Quit India Movement then, “Attlee’s face twisted in a sarcastic smile and he said ‘Minimal’!” Does one need to say more to prove how pivotal was the contribution of Bose and the volunteers and martyrs of INA in expediting the attainment of Independence for India! In a historic gesture, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is going to inaugurate a national museum devoted to Netaji and the INA in Kolkata. It would be a proud moment for all of us. The Netaji Subhas BoseINA Trust — a leading national organisation devoted to spreading the message, commitment and courage of Netaji among the future generations — has grand plans to celebrate the anniversary. Its illustrious chairperson, Brig (Retd) RS Chhikara, repeatedly poses a query: “Why don’t we have a suitable memorial for Netaji and the INA at a prominent place in New Delhi where visitors from India and other countries could pay their respects to this great son of India and the brave men who laid down their lives at his call?” I have no answer. Could we strive to get one? JS Rajput (The author works in education and social cohesion. The views expressed are personal.)
The Concept of saving money what north east states want
T
he term “money” is what we always use in association with politics and corruption in Nagaland. But today we will be discussing about it purely on economic perspective in this article. According to general observation, handling of money in most Naga households revolves only around keeping it in savings accounts or inside the steel almirah or using it as a medium of exchange- which is what money is for- to buy consumer and “eventualperishable” goods. This is normal for the majority of us. Now, our spending habits, which is a major topic of discussion in itself, is not the matter of concern today. Today, it’s about our savings. Whether it’s for weddings, child education, retirement or vacation, we are always saving money. We save money with the intention of keeping it for later use. But are we really keeping it? If my grandfather kept Rs 50,000 in 1970 in order to build a massive house today, could he have built it? He could’ve then, but not today. This is what we call inflation. As a result of inflation, the value of money is always decreasing, and more so for an idle one. In India, the inflation rate fluctuates at around 5-7% which means the cost of products are increasing at that rate, and it also means the value of money is decreasing at that percentage. That’s right. The money that you are saving is depreciating by 6-7% each year. The most that our dearly beloved SBI bank gives its savings account holders is not even 3%. Meaning that your money in savings account is still depreciating by 3-4% each year. The next best option is Fixed Deposits account. It has it’s disadvantages. But the most it gives is also about 5-6%, which is relatively better yet is still below or about the line of depreciating your hard earned money. The impacts of these depreciations are not felt immediately. But 30 years or 40 years down the line, if your bare savings of say Rs 50 lakhs can’t make you your dream house, you can only regret. Now, inflation is not the one to be blamed here. In fact, inflation is
inevitable and a certain amount of it is also needed to keep the economy running. RBI announced that 4% (+/- 2%) is ideal for India. While most developed countries keep it at 2-3%. So, the question is not how to suppress it but how to get one up in the game of keeping your money. And the answer is to let your money multiply itself. There are several ways to do it and it’s all up to each person how to do it. In general it is called “investment”. And in particular, some of them are stocks, bonds, commodities, real estate, mutual funds, loans, etc. Most Nagas, especially the elders, are reserved on these subjects. And they are not wrong. The money you earned came with the price of your labour. Likewise, the money that is to be multiplied comes with the price of a risk of partially losing it. But everything is a give-and-take in this world. If what you give in investment is your knowledge and time, the risk of giving your money is reduced. By investing your money somewhere you have confidence on, you can keep the principal amount and make it churn out profits, which we here call it multiplying. Even within the realm of investments, there are risk intensities depending on a person’s expectations of return. For example, giving out loan to someone in Nagaland, which is a whopping 8-10% of interest returns per month, is highly profitable yet highly risky. And in real estate sector, renting out houses demands high investment cost and slow returns, yet has minimal risk. Likewise, even in stock market, a retail investor carries more risk and high rate of return compared to the one investing through mutual funds, even if they are both trading on equity. The word “risk” is what we don’t play with in Nagaland. Whereas, there are billions out there that have already stepped in the field. While it is entirely up to an individual whether to step into smart investment or not, I’m just here to point out that the money you are saving is being lost one rupee after another. The point of true saving is only when the inevitable depreciation is balanced by a calculated multiplication. Motsuthung Yanthan (motsuthungy.my@gmail.com)
from union budget 2021-22?
A
s the Union Budget 2021 is aweek away, the focus will turn to sectors calling for immediate attention. Budget 2021 can indicate the beginning of a new ‘New Normal’ era. This Budget can turn out to be one of the most exciting ones in this century. Being a faculty of Economics in Northeast region,it is my utmost responsibility to highlight the expectations of Northeast India’s people from the coming Budget. In this coming Budget a big area that the government needs to focus on is infrastructure for Northeast India because infrastructure has strong links to growth, and with both supply- and demand-side features that help generate employment and long-term assets and agriculture and healthcare both require modern infrastructure to ensure better outcomes, respectively. Since infrastructure development also boosts other industries and facilitates the ease of doing business, it fosters inclusive growth and helps in poverty alleviation too. In the light of the above, to boost a quicker economic turnaround, the Union Budget 2021-22 should ensure
greater outlays for infrastructure development for Northeast India. Here is Northeast States’ peoplewish list for the Budget 2021 • In spite of special attention being paid, particularly in the recent years, for development of transport infrastructure, some areas like North-East continue to be inadequately served and this has affected not only their economic development but even social and political integration with the rest of the country. So, big expectation of the habitants of the NE is more spending on infrastructure, especially on road networks in North-East states. • Another big expectation is to emphasis on better medical facilities, especially now that they need to vaccinate most of the population during this pandemic. • The public health infrastructure of the region is one of the most underdeveloped in the country. Upgrade medical infrastructure; more medical institutes in NorthEast states needs to be taken care. • COVID-19 has disrupted the value chain of the MSMEs especially handloom, handicrafts and food
processing sectors According to UNDP, MSMEs can create sustainable livelihood for women in North East. So, more funds for young women workers in the social sector may be provided and new financial schemes for them may be included in the budget. • Women should be educated to comprehend that they require a change for the betterment of themselves. Budget needs to focus on to improve education in Northeast States. More allocations may be madefor education to build better schools with improved quality facilities. • A large proportion of the ST population in NER states resides in the designated tribal areas. Meghalaya, Mizoram and Nagaland house more than 85% ST population, all living in their respective designated tribal areas of the states. More focus on efficient social schemes; proper and extensive medical care for senior citizens must be focused in the budget. Reader’s Post Sir,
Erratic SBI ATM Booths
The ATM booths around Dimapur has either been running out of cash or facing a lot of maintenance problem lately. On going to other SBI ATM booths around Dimapur, one can find the same snag in almost every SBI ATMs, and I’m pretty sure that this has caused a lot of inconvenience for the public as well. Having read in the papers on the public conveying their grievances on the poor ATM services, I have come to notice that this issue is being faced by the people all over the state. Therefore, I request the authority to fix the problem without any further negligence. Emilo Patton, Dimapur

session of 1938 that Bose was elected Congress president. “On the eve of Netaji Bose’s Jayanti, my mind goes back to 23rd January 2009- the day we launched eGram Vishwagram Project from Haripura. This initiative revolutionised Gujarat’s IT infrastructure and took the fruits of technology to the poor, in the remotest parts of the state,” Modi said. Modi said he can never forget the affection of the people of Haripura who took him through an elaborate procession on the same road as Bose was taken in 1938.
Arnab chats: CWC demands JPC Centre to SC: No probe on Official Secrets Act extra attempt to NEW DELHI, JAN 22 (PTI): The Congress on Friday demanded a joint parliamentary committee (JPC) probe into the purported WhatsApp chats of Arnab Goswami for breach of national security and violations of Official Secrets Act and book those involved. The Congress Working Committee, the highest decision making body of the grand old party, passed a resolution to this effect. The CWC, chaired by Sonia Gandhi earlier discussed the issue along with that of the farmers’ agitation and the COVID-19 vaccination drive and passed three resolutions on each of them. “The CWC demands a time-bound investigation by a Joint Parliamentary Committee to enquire into the breach of national security, violations of Official Secrets Act and the role of the persons involved. Ultimately, those who are guilty of treacherous behaviour must be brought before the law and punished,” the CWC resolution said. The CWC expresses its grave concern at the revelations “exposing the sordid conversations that have un-
doubtedly compromised national security”, it said. “It is clear that among those involved are persons in the highest echelons of government and there has been a breach of secrecy concerning vital and sensitive military operations. The revelations also point to inexcusable and deliberate subservion of government structures, scandalous and extraneous influence over government policies, and a vicious attack on the independence of the judiciary,” the resolution also said. It alleged that the “shameful compromise” of the Modi government with non-government players has been exposed. The CWC also expressed shock that even days after the revelations, the prime minister and central government remained silent on the issue as though the storm will pass. “Their silence undermines their collusion, complicity and guilt. The storm will not pass and we will hold the central government accountable for compromising national security and aiding India’s adversaries,” the resolution said.

UPSC aspirants
NEW DELHI, JAN 22 (IANS): The Centre on Friday told the Supreme Court it is not keen on granting an extra attempt to civil services aspirants, who could not take the last attempt of the exam amid the on-going Covid-19 pandemic. Additional Solicitor General S.V. Raju, representing the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) submitted before a bench headed by Justice A M Khanwilkar “We are not ready to give one more chance.” Raju sought time to file an affidavit citing that he had received instructions last night, informing that the Centre is not willing to give an extra chance. The bench, also comprising justices B.R. Gavai and Krishna Murari, scheduled the plea of a civil services aspirant Rachna Singh for further hearing on January 25. The bench asked the Centre to serve the affidavit to parties involved in the matter. In the previous hearing in the matter, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta had informed the top court that the government was considering the issue to grant an extra attempt to UPSC aspirants who missed their last chance.
KOL K ATA , J A N 2 2 (AGENCIES): West Bengal Minister Rajib Banerjee today quit the government citing a change of portfolio two years ago and broke down on camera, saying: “I never thought a day would come when I would have to take such a difficult step”. He is the third minister to resign this month in the middle of an exodus from Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s Trinamool Congress ahead of elections. Mr Banerjee did not respond to questions on whether he was headed to the BJP, like dozens of Trinamool Congress leaders before him. As he emerged from
the Governor’s house Raj Bhavan after handing over his resignation, he told media persons that he was hurt when he learnt from TV, one fine day, that he had lost the Irrigation ministry and had been moved to Forests. On the belated response to something that happened two years ago, he said he did not take any step as he was stopped by senior leaders. “There is no problem with the changing of portfolio, but I was hurt by the way it was done,” Mr Banerjee said. “I am grateful to Mamata Banerjee for guiding me for all the years. I reiterate my commitment towards working for the people of
The vaccines were provided at a crucial time when the number of coronavirus cases in Bangladesh is rising.
Dhaka, Jan 22 (PTI): Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has thanked her Indian counterpart Narendra Modi for sending over two million doses of COVID-19 vaccine as a gift to Bangladesh. India on Thursday officially handed over 2 million doses of domestically produced Covishield vaccine to Bangladesh. The vaccines were provided at a crucial time when the number of coronavirus cases in Bangladesh is rising. “I thank Prime Minister Narendra Modi for sending the vaccine (batch) as a gift,” Hasina said at an online international conference held on the occasion of the 100th founding anniversary of the University of Dhaka on Thursday.
She said the government has already planned how it would proceed with the vaccine, the Dhaka Tribune reported. “We have taken all the steps to face the COVID-19 situation in the country,” Hasina said. Apart from the current delivery of vaccines, Bangladesh is also set to purchase 3 crore doses of India-made coronavirus vaccine. Hasina hoped that the vaccine that Bangladesh procured from India would arrive by January 25-26, the report said. Bangladesh has so far recorded 7,966 COVID-19 deaths since the outbreak of the pandemic in March last year, while the total number of infections have surged to over 530,270.
India in touch with China to effect crew change: MEA
New Delhi, Jan 22 (PTI): India on Friday said it is in touch with China to effect at the earliest a crew change for 16 Indian sailors stranded on a cargo ship in Chinese waters for nearly four months. Thirty-nine Indian crew members were stranded on two cargo ships in Chinese waters. Ministry of External Affairs Spokesperson Anurag Srivastava said MV Jag Anand effected a crew change for sailors in Japan and the Indian sailors have proceeded back to India. “As regards MV Anastasia, which has 16 Indian crew members and is at anchorage at the Caofeidian port in China, our embassy
in Beijing has been in touch with the Chinese side, both at the central government and at the provincial levels, to effect a crew change at the earliest,” he said at an online media briefing. “Our embassy is continuously following up with both the shipping company as well as with the relevant Chinese authorities to ensure the well-being of the crew as well as to facilitate this matter further,” Srivastava said. Earlier this month, India sought “urgent, practical and time-bound” assistance to the 39 Indian sailors stranded on the two ships, considering the “grave” humanitarian situation developing on board the vessels.

Citing coronavirus-related restrictions, Chinese authorities did not allow the ships to either dock or go for a crew change for months. Indian bulk cargo vessel MV Jag Anand, with 23 Indian sailors, was on anchorage near the Jingtang port in China’s Hebei province since June 13 last year, while MV Anastasia, with 16 Indians as its crew, has been on anchorage at
the Caofeidian port since September 20. Asked about the fishermen issue being an irritant in India-Sri Lanka ties, Srivastava said it has been on the agenda of discussions between the two sides and there is a realisation at the highest level that it is a humanitarian issue, which has to be handled in a humanitarian manner. “There are well-established bilateral mecha-
nisms to deal with the issue,” he said. On the status of the Colombo East Container terminal project, Srivastava said, “We have engaged with the Sri Lankan government to take this project forward. We will be happy to see the development of the East Container Terminal through investments from India and Japan, as is preferred by the current Sri Lankan government.”

Bengal.” While there is no formal announcement, Mr Banerjee is widely expected to join the BJP on January 31, when one of the party’s top leaders, Home Minister Amit Shah, is scheduled to address a rally in Howrah. His resignation comes days after he had complained about “some leaders in the Trinamool Congress (TMC)” carrying out propaganda against him. He had struck several discordant notes against the government and the party over the past two months. Senior TMC leader and minister Partha Chatterjee met with his at least twice, to try and bring him around. “There are a few leaders in the party who only exploit workers. They run false propaganda against me using some party workers,” he said on January 16 during a Facebook Live session, according to an ANI report. He, however, did not reveal any names. In the bitter run-up to the Bengal election due by May, scores of leaders and workers have left the Trinamool for the BJP.

A day after touching the historic 50,000-level, the Sensex found it tough to sustain itself at higher levels as investors offloaded Reliance Industries ahead of its results, while banking and finance counters also bore the brunt of heavy selling amid lacklustre global cues. The 30-share BSE benchmark tumbled 746.22 points or 1.50 per cent to finish at 48,878.54, posting its largest single-session drop in a month. Biden launches ‘100 days mask challenge’
Makes COVID test, quarantine mandatory for people entering US WASHINGTON, JAN 22 (PTI): US President Joe Biden has unveiled his “wartime” national strategy to boost the fight against the raging COVID-19 pandemic, including making the coronavirus test followed by quarantine mandatory for all travellers coming from overseas. Announcing the measures, Biden said it would take months to defeat the pandemic but America would “get through this” if people stood together. The moves come a day after Biden was sworn in as the 46th president. “In addition to wearing masks, everyone flying to the United States from another country will need to test before they get on that plane, before they depart, and quarantine when they arrive in America,” Biden said at a White House event where he signed the orders. In terms of total deaths from coronavirus, the US is the worst-hit country with more than 406,000 lives lost, according to Johns Hopkins University. Nearly 24.5 million have been infected in

the country. US airlines and their employees have been seeking such a federal mask mandate almost since the pandemic began, as they have struggled to deal with score of passengers who refuse to follow the airlines’ own mask-wearing rules. But the previous Trump administration had refused to enact such a mask mandate, as the ex-president himself and many in his administration often made a point of going mask-less. Biden’s plan starts with a national vaccination campaign in order to meet the President’s goal of administering 100 million shots, which is enough to cover 50 million Americans with vaccines that require two doses, in his first 100 days in office. “Our national plan launches a full-scale war-
time effort to address the supply shortages by ramping up production and protective equipment, syringes, needles, you name it. And when I say wartime, people look at me like wartime? Well, as I said last night, 4,00,000 Americans have died. That’s more than World War II... this is a wartime undertaking,” he said. The death toll will likely top 5,00,000 next month, he said, adding that the cases will continue to mount. “We didn’t get into this mess overnight and it’s going to take months for us to turn things around but let me be equally clear we will get through this, we will defeat this pandemic, and to a nation waiting for action, let me be the clearest on this point, help is on the way,” he said. Google threatens to pull search engine in Australia
WELLINGTON, JAN 22 (AP): Google on Friday threatened to make its search engine unavailable in Australia if the government went ahead with plans to make tech giants pay for news content. Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison quickly hit back, saying “we don’t respond to threats.” “Australia makes our rules for things you can do in Australia,” Morrison told reporters in Brisbane. “That’s done in our Parliament. It’s done by our government. And that’s how things work here in Australia.” Morrison’s comments came after Mel Silva, the managing director of Google Australia and New Zealand, told a Senate inquiry into the bill that the new rules would be unworkable. “If this version of the code were to become law, it would give us no real choice

but to stop making Google search available in Australia,” Silva told senators. “And that would be a bad outcome not only for us, but also for the Australian people, media diversity, and the small businesses who use our products every day.” The mandatory code of conduct proposed by the government aims to make Google and Facebook pay Australian media companies fairly for using news content they siphon from news sites. Silva said it was willing to pay a wide and diverse group of news publishers for the value they added, but not under the rules as proposed, which included payments for links and snippets. She said the code’s “biased arbitration model” also posed unmanageable financial and operational risks for Google. She suggested a series of tweaks to the bill.
“We feel there is a workable path forward,” Silva said. Like in many other countries, Google dominates internet searches in Australia. S i l v a told senators about 95% of searches in the nation are done through Google. Asked by one senator how much tax it pays, Silva said last year it paid about 59 million Australian dollars ($46 million) on revenues of AU$4.8 billion ($3.7 billion). Facebook also opposes the rules and has threatened to remove news stories from its site in Australia. Simon Milner, a Facebook vice president, said the sheer volume of deals it would have to strike would be unworkable. The Australia Institute, an independent think tank, said lawmakers should stand firm against Google’s bullying.

executive actions to beat the pandemic, Biden said this plan reflects the ideas he set forward during the campaign and they have been further refined over the last three months. The national strategy is comprehensive and detailed, and is based on science and truth not politics and denial, he said. He said the plan was developed with input from the nation’s top infectious disease expert, Dr Anthony Fauci, among other advisers and experts. Fauci, head of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases and Biden’s chief medical adviser, was at the event at the White House, along with Biden’s Covid czar Jeff Zients. Biden said the American public would be “hearing a lot more from Dr. Fauci again, not from the President, but from the real genuine experts and scientists,” in a veiled criticism of his predecessor Donald Trump. The Trump administration was widely accused of failing to get to grips with the pandemic. Biden said the plan starts with mounting an aggressive, safe, and effective vaccination campaign to meet the goal of administering 100 million shots in the
first 100 days in office. “We are on day one. This will be one of the greatest operational challenges our nation has ever undertaken, and I am committed to getting it done; we’re committed to getting it done. “We will move heaven and earth to get more people vaccinated for free and create more places for them to get vaccinated to mobilise more medical teams to get shots in people’s arms and to increase vaccine supply and get it out the door as fast as possible,” he said. Biden said that he has directed the Federal Emergency Management Agency to start standing up the first federally supported community vaccination centres. The goal is to stand up 100 centres within the next month, he said. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention will launch the federal pharmacy programme to make vaccines available to communities beginning early February. “We will also task the Department of Health and Human Services to prepare and expand the pool of medical professionals who can administer the vaccine, and ensure that we have enough vaccinators to meet the nation’s needs and quickly,” he said.

IS responsible for Baghdad twin suicide bombings
UNITED NATIONS, JAN 22 (IANS): UN SecretaryGeneral Antonio Guterres has offered his condolences to the families of the five people killed in a fire at the Serum Institute of India (SII) campus in Pune and hoped the incident would be investigated, according to his spokesperson Stephane Dujarric. Asked at his daily briefing on Thursday about the blaze, Dujarric said: “We, obviously, are saddened by the loss of life and send our condolences to the families impacted, and we hope the fire is fully investigated.” The fire did not however affect the units making the Covid-19 vaccine, according to SII CEO Adar Poonawalla. It was not at the facilities making the Covid-19 vaccine but at an under-construction building.
BAG H DA D, JA N 2 2 (IANS): The Islamic State (IS) terror group has claimed responsibility for the twin suicide bombings at a crowded market area in Baghdad, that killed 32 people and injured 116 others, Iraqi media reports said on Friday. The group identified the two suicide bombers as Abu Yousif al-Ansari and Mohammed Arif alMuhajir, who targeted a gathering of Shia people in downtown Baghdad on Thursday, the local media reports quoted an online IS statement as saying. On Thursday morning, a suicide bomber detonated his explosive belt in a bustling outdoor market for second-hand clothes in Bab al-Sharji area, and a second one blew himself up a few minutes later in the same area. WASHINGTON, JAN 22 (PTI): The historic inauguration of Kamala Harris as America’s vice president has further cemented the importance of the relationship between the United States and India, according to a top White House official. Born to a Jamaican father and an Indian mother, 56-year-old Harris made history on Wednesday when she was sworn in as the first female, first Black and first Asian-American US vice-president. The former senator from California was sworn in just before Joe Biden, 78, took the oath of office to become the 46th President of the United States. Addressing reporters at her daily news conference on Thursday, White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki said President Biden respects the long bipartisan successful relationship between the two countries. “President Biden, of course, has visited India many times, respects and values the long bipartisan successful relationship between leaders in India and the United States. It looks forward to a continuation of that,” Psaki said responding to a question on India-US relationship under the new

Biden administration. The historic inauguration of Indian-origin Harris, she said, further cements this relationship. “Obviously, he (Biden) selected and yesterday, she (Harris) was sworn in as the first Indian-American to serve as president or vice president. Certainly, a historic moment for all of us in this country but a further cementing of the importance of our relationship,” Psaki said. On Wednesday, Harris credited her mother for showing faith in her and always reminding her two daughters that “though we may be the first, we should not be the last.” Harris remembered her late mother Shyamala Gopalan, a cancer researcher and civil rights activist from
India, saying she has always carried that lesson from her mother with her throughout her career from serving as the first woman District Attorney of San Francisco, to the first woman Attorney General of California, and the first woman of colour to represent California in the United States Senate. “My story is the story of millions of Americans. My mother Shyamala Gopalan arrived in the United States from India. She raised my sister Maya and me to know that though we may be the first, we should not be the last,” Harris said at the Presidential Inaugural Committee’s official Asian American inaugural ball, hosted virtually by IMPACT, the leading Indian American advocacy and political action committee.

Too early to say when curbs will be lifted: UK PM Boris Johnson LO N D O N, JA N 2 2 (IANS): UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson said that it was “too early to say when restrictions will be lifted” as coronavirus infections in the country continue to remain high. “We’ve got to observe the lockdown, the stay at home message, protect each other and protect the NHS (National Health Service). ahead,” he said on Thursday during a visit to the Greater Manchester area hit by heavy flooding. Johnson said figures
from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) and other studies showed clearly that the new coronavirus variant, which was first discovered in the country late last year, is very contagious, reports Xinhua news agency. “It is not more deadly but it is more contagious and the numbers are very great,” he said. Meanwhile, Johnson’s spokesman told journalists at a Westminster briefing that the UK government
continues to keep all of the scientific evidence and data under review regarding the decision to lift lockdown. “It remains our position that we want to ease restrictions as soon as it is safe to do so, but in order for us to do that we need to see the transmission rates of the virus come down and we need to see the pressure on the NHS reduce,” said the spokesman. Ministers “stand ready to strengthen our border
policy where we think it’s appropriate to protect the public”, he said when asked about reports suggesting people coming to the UK could be required to pay to stay in a hotel for two weeks while they quarantine. England is currently under the third national lockdown since the outbreak of the pandemic in the country. Similar restriction measures are also in place in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

This is too harsh on him and his image is being tarnished,” he added. Dhanda insisted that his client is an ideal citizen who had carried many welfare activities, especially during the pandemic, in the past. In Mumbai, Sood’s lawyer had sought 10 weeks to comply with the notice issued by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) in October last year, and urged the High Court to direct the civic body not to begin demolition action. The High Court told Sood’s lawyer that he can approach the civic body
and declined to pass any direction. “The ball is now in the office of the BMC... you (Sonu Sood) may approach them,” Justice Chavan said. Earlier this month, Sood had moved the High Court against an order of a city civil court at Dindoshi, which dismissed his suit against the BMC’s notice. This notice was issued in connection with the alleged illegal construction. In the plea, Sood had claimed he had not carried out any illegal or unauthorised construction in the building. According to BMC, Sood had carried out structural changes in the sixstorey residential building ‘Shakti Sagar’. It was alleged that he had converted this building into a hotel without taking requisite permissions. (IANS)

onely adults aged 50 and over reported an average of two worsening depressive and other mental health symptoms during the Covid-19 lockdown, a new study suggests. They study indicated that a decrease in physical activity since the start of the pandemic was associated with worsening symptoms of depression and anxiety during the pandemic. “We found that during lockdown, loneliness and decreased physical activity were associated with more symptoms of poor mental health, especially depression,” researcher Byron Creese from the University of Exeter, said in a statement. For the study, the researchers involved more than 3,000 participants. According to the researchers, loneliness emerged as a key factor linked to worsening symptoms of depression and anxiety in a study of people aged 50 or over.
The study found that before the pandemic, lonely people would report an average of two symptoms of depression for at least several days over the previous last two weeks. During the lockdown, lonely people reported either an increase in frequency of depressive symptoms, to more than half the days in the two week period, or a new symptom for at least several days in that timeframe. In people who were
not lonely, levels of depressive symptoms were unaffected. “ E ve n b e f o r e t h e pandemic, loneliness and physical activity levels were a huge issue in society, particularly among older people,” Creese said. “It’s now crucial that we build on this data to find new ways to mitigate risk of worsening mental health during the pandemic,” Creese added. Billie told Apple Music’s Zane Lowe that they originally wrote the first verse up until the chorus in January 2019 before returning to the track six months later, with the ‘Con Altura’ singer adding the second verse. The ‘Bad Guy’ hitmaker continued: “We didn’t get back to it until literally last year, 2020. And so that was mid-quarantine. We’re just like, ‘Yeah, let’s work on this song.’ Because in our heads, we were going to put it out in the summertime. “I just was like, ‘It needs something else... We wrote it was the whole song was done, except we needed this last line.” The final line came when Billie and her brother
and collaborator, Finneas O’Connell, along with his girlfriend Claudia Sulewski, attended one of their regular Friday dinner and movie nights with their parents Maggie Baird and Patrick O’Connell and decided to play them the song. She recalled: “We all came down to the studio, and we listened, and me and Finneas were like, ‘Should we just write this line right now?’ So I was sitting in the room with my entire family. “We both, all of us, including my dad and my
mom, they were like, ‘What if it was like...’ We were all giving ideas. “So technically, they should have a writing credit, because we all wrote that line right at the end.” The tricky line in question is: “You say it to me like it’s something I have any choice in/ If I wasn’t important, then why would you waste all your poison?” Meanwhile, Billie admitted working with Rosalia was a whole new experience for her. She said: “It’s so not something I feel like I’ve
done. Rosalía opened a little channel in me that I hadn’t tried out before.” And the ‘No Time To Die’ singer thinks it was “so important” that a lot of the track is in Spanish. She said: “When were writing the song, I remember her saying something about, ‘It should be in English.’ And I was like, ‘No, no, no. It should be in Spanish. It’s so beautiful.’ “I like tons of music from languages I don’t even speak... I’ve been really intrigued by it pretty much my whole life.” (Contactmusic)

ANTPEUU calls for issuing ads for physical edu instructors’ posts
DIMAPUR, JAN 22 (NPN): Noting that many trained and qualified physical education instructors are out of touch as no job advertisements have been issued by the State government, All Nagaland Trained Physical Education Unemployed Union (ANTPEUU) has resolved to pressurise authorities concerned to advertise the vacant posts by this year itself as, any delay in the process, would further worsen their condition. The union said many trained physical education teachers had completed their course training in 2017 and were now waiting for job advertisements from the education department, which however seemed to be a far cry. Stating that many trained teachers had become over-aged now, ANTPEUU asked who would take the responsibility for delay in advertisements for posts that had remained vacant for many years. At a meeting held here on January 20, the union said COVID-19 pandemic had a huge impact as no advertisements were
issued and many of these qualified physical education instructors were now on the last year of their becoming over-aged since its demand had remained stagnant since 2019. In this regard, the union resolved to strengthen its demand, stand united and strive for justice in terms of advertisements and job placement. The meeting also discussed about the vacancies of physical teachers in government schools and the importance of physical activity and fitness during this pandemic, especially post pandemic. Observing that while India was advancing in the field of physical activity but Nagaland was lacking far behind, it stressed training students from an early stage at the grassroots level. It was also decided that a general meeting of the union would be held soon, which would be notified through WhatsApp group, and all members were requested to stay updated in this regard. This was stated in a press release by ANTPEUU president Kivilu K Kiba and general secretary Imchatsung.
its partners including the government and the International Olympic Committee (IOC) were “fully focused” on hosting the games as scheduled. “It is very disappointing to see that the Times is developing such a tabloidlike story with an untrustworthy source,” a source from the organising committee told Reuters. “The national government is fully committed to delivering a safe and secure Games,” the source said. The IOC issued a statement echoing that line, adding: “We will be implementing all possible counter-mea-
sures against COVID-19 and will continue to work closely ... in our preparations for holding a safe and secure Games this summer.” The Australian and U.S. Olympic Committees said they were preparing for the Games as planned. “Unfortunately, I need to address unfounded rumours that the Tokyo Olympic Games will be cancelled, rumours that only create more anxiety for athletes,” Matt Carroll, the chief executive of the Australian committee, told reporters in Sydney. “The Tokyo Games are on. The flame will be lit on July 23, 2021.” The Australian committee is run by the IOC’s pointman for the Tokyo Games, John Coates. The U.S. and Canadian committees wrote on Twitter they had not received any information suggesting the Games would not happen as planned. Sebastian Coe, head of World Athletics, also moved to reassure fans and locals that it would go ahead in a
secure environment. “There is an absolute, cast-iron determination,” Coe told Reuters, saying that the arrival of vaccines and ability of athletes to train meant the situation was far better than when the Games were postponed last year. Japan has been hit less severely by the pandemic than many other advanced economies but a recent surge in cases has forced it to close its borders to non-resident foreigners and declare a state of emergency in the Tokyo and other cities. Tokyo reported new daily coronavirus cases of more than 1,000 for nine straight days through Thursday and set a single-day record of more than 2,400 infections earlier this month. The death toll from the respiratory disease stands at nearly 4,900 people in Japan. There are public fears that an influx of athletes will spread the virus. About 80% of people in Japan do not want the Games to be held this summer, recent polls show.

Barca need extra time in Cup; Atletico go top of LaLiga
M A D R I D, J A N 2 2 (IANS): FC Barcelona needed an Ousmane Dembele goal in extra time to reach the last 16 of the Copa del Rey away to thirdtier Cornella. Cornella keeper Ramon Juan on Thursday saved a penalty in each half, first from Miralem Pjanic and then from Dembele 10 minutes from the end of normal time, to keep alive the hopes of the team that had already knocked Atletico Madrid out of the last round, reports Xinhua news agency. Dembele finally opened the scoring in the 92nd minute and Martin Braithwaite netted a second goal in the last minute of added time. Newly crowned Spanish Supercup Champions, Athletic Club Bilbao were also made to work hard as they had to come back from behind before beating Ibiza (also from the third tier) 2-1. Ibiza humiliated Celta 5-2 in the last round and took the lead in the 11th minute with an excellent

goal from Javi Perez. The home side looked hungry for another upset and had Athletic on the back foot, but Raul Garcia, who came on as a secondhalf substitute, leveled the game with a 52nd-minute header and Unai Nunez stopped the game from going into extra time with a 92nd-minute winner from close range. In LaLiga, Luis Suarez scored twice, including a
last-minute penalty to give his side a fortunate 2-1 win away to Eibar to extend their lead at the top of the table to seven points over Real Madrid and 10 ahead of Barca. Eibar opened the scoring with a penalty that was confidently scored by goalkeeper Marco Dmitrovic, but Suarez netted from a narrow-angle before halftime and then won the game after he went down
easily under a challenge and referee Melero Lopez pointed to the penalty spot. Valencia and Osasuna drew 1-1 with a result that will please neither side. Osasuna took the lead thanks to Nacho Vidal’s first half volley, but Valencia took a point when Unai Garcia put the ball into his own net while trying to clear Mussa’s low cross aimed at Maxi Gomez.

TOKYO, JAN 22 (AGENCIES): Japan and the IOC stood firm on Friday on their commitment to host the Tokyo Olympics this year and denied a report of a possible cancellation, although the pledge looks unlikely to ease public concern about holding the event during a pandemic. Though much of Japan is under a state of emergency due to a third wave of COVID-19 infections, Tokyo Olympic organisers have vowed to press ahead with the re-scheduled Games, which are due to open on July 23 after being postponed for a year because of the coronavirus. A government spokesman said there was “no truth” to a report in Britain’s Times newspaper that the government had privately concluded the Games would have to be cancelled. The Times, citing an unidentified senior member of Japan’s ruling coalition, said the government’s focus was now on securing the Games for Tokyo in the next available year, 2032.

Mumbai FC beat SC East Bengal 1-0; tops table ably midway through the first half. SC East Bengal started defensively, fully aware of the attacking might of its opponent. SC East Bengal coach Robbie Fowler chose to rest Nigerian forward Bright Enobakhare and preferred to have most of his foreign roster in more defensive positions to stop the likes of Adam Le Fondre, Hugo Boumous and Cy Goddard in the Mumbai City attack. Despite preparing the bulwark against the most consistent attacking side in the tournament so far, SC East Bengal conceded the goal in the 27th minute when Boumous created a fantastic opportunity with a measured chip for the towering Fall to finish. The goal came following Goddard’s corner that was helped along to Boumous positioned at the right flank. The French-

Tough draw for Djokovic’s Serbia in ATP
Nenad Zimonjic, Novak Djokovic, Nikola Milojevic, Dusan Lajovic, Nikola Cacic and Viktor Troicki celebrate with the trophy after winning the ATP Cup in Sydney on Jan 13, 2020.
SYDNEY, JAN 22 (AGENCIES): Reigning champions Serbia, led by world number one Novak Djokovic, will play Germany and Canada in the group stage of the ATP Cup in Melbourne next week after the draw was made on Friday. The men’s team competition made its debut in cities around Australia last year but will be truncated and played only at Melbourne Park from Feb. 1-5 because of the COVID-19 pandemic. It will, however, offer the players their first competitive outings after the 14 days of hotel quarantine they had to undergo ahead of the Australian Open, which starts on Feb. 8. Djokovic led Serbia to
the inaugural title with a victory over Rafa Nadal’s Spain in Sydney last year but his path to a return to the final was not helped by a tough draw in Group A. The Germany team will be spearheaded by Alexander Zverev, while Denis Shapovalov is the standout player in a Canada side also featuring Milos Raonic. The winning team from each of the four first-round groups will go directly into the semi-finals. Nadal’s Spain team will play Greece and Australia in Group B, an easier draw given the Greeks have little depth beneath world number six Stefanos Tsitsipas and the hosts will be without Nick Kyrgios. Kyrgios paid the price
for a year of inaction because of COVID-19 concerns when his world ranking slipped to 46, leaving Alex de Minaur to lead the home side. Ky r g i o s h a s s i n c e slipped another place to 47th. Dominic Thiem’s Austria were the top seed in Group C and they will face Italy and France, while Russia will be favourites to top Group D ahead of Argentina and Japan. Russia are the only team with two top 10 players in their side in Daniil Medvedev and Andrey Rublev, while Argentina and Japan are led by world number nine Diego Schwartzman and world number 41 Kei Nishikori respectively.
man lobbed the ball for Fall, who was the tallest man in the SC East Bengal box, and the Senegalese defender made no mistake with his header. Mumbai City FC had earlier come close to scoring in the 14th minute when SC East Bengal goalkeeper Debjit Majumder fumbled and Boumous sent the loose ball wide of an open net. Le Fondre was wasteful in the injury-time of first half when he sent his header, off a Bipin Singh cross, wide from close. Enobakhare was introduced midway through second half but SC East Bengal could not find the equaliser despite getting close on a few occasions after the break. IPL auction likely on February 18: BCCI official NEW DELHI, JAN 22 (PTI): The IPL players auction ahead of the 2021 season is likely to be held on February 18, a BCCI official told PTI on Friday. “The auction will be held on February 18. The venue is yet to be decided,” the official said. The BCCI is also yet to decide whether the IPL will happen in India or not even though Board President Sourav Ganguly has repeatedly asserted that everything possible would be done to keep the glitzy event at its home. The 2020 edition was held in the UAE in September-November due to the COVID-19 pandemic. A smooth conduct of India’s home series against England from next month should pave the way for the lucrative league to be held at home. The player retention deadline ended on January 20 and the trading window closes on February 4. To p A u s t r a l i a n draws like Steve Smith and Glenn Maxwell were released from Rajasthan Royals and Kings XI Punjab respectively on the last day of the retention deadline.

NBA roundup: Jazz push win streak to seven
S a lt L a k e C i t y (Utah), JAN 22 (AGENCIES): Donovan Mitchell scored a season-high 36 points and grabbed seven rebounds to lead the Utah Jazz past the New Orleans Pelicans 129-118 Thursday night in Salt Lake City for their seventh consecutive victory. Mike Conley amassed 20 points and six assists for Utah. Rudy Gobert contributed 12 points, 11 rebounds and four blocked shots, reserve Jordan Clarkson added 19 points, and Bojan Bogdanovic threw in 16 points for a Jazz team that shot 50 percent from the floor. Kentavious CaldwellPope made a season-high seven 3-pointers on 10 attempts in a 23-point night, and Anthony Davis had 18 points and nine rebounds. World Athletics chief Coe confident Olympics will go ahead
LONDON, JAN 22 (AGENCIES): World Athletics President Sebastian Coe said there is “an absolute, cast iron determination” to deliver the Tokyo Olympics and the arrival of COVID-19 vaccines and ability of athletes to train mean the situation is much better than when the Games were postponed last year. The Japanese government denied a newspaper report on Friday quoting an unnamed official as saying the Games would have to be cancelled with much of Japan under a state of emergency because of COVID19 infections, and Coe said everyone was still working towards a successful hosting. “The government in Japan, the organising committee, the municipality and
then the other key stakeholders - the international federations and particularly the athletes - are all unified in their determination to try to deliver a Games that is safe and secure,” Coe, a double Olympic gold medallist, told Reuters in an interview. “It’s a challenge but it’s the challenge that at this very moment all the key players are actually up for an that’s why I have a confidence, with the insights as an international Federation - the number one Olympic sport – can bring to bear on that.” The Games were postponed from the summer of 2020 last March following the start of the pandemic. But Coe said two big differences almost a year on left him confident they would go ahead as scheduled from July 23.
“Firstly, there is the vaccine and we were a long way away from even thinking about that at this stage last year,” he said. “It is being rolled out and over the next few months it will increase in its availability. “I know that at this stage (last year) athletes were beginning to find it really difficult to maintain their training regimes and that competitions were beginning to slide off the radar screen. Now they are having greater access both to training and competitions - we’ve already had competitions indoors in athletics this season,” he said. “So, at this moment, there is an absolute cast-iron determination to deliver the Games but to deliver them in a safe and secure environment,” he said.
