RSZ, RSU indefinite bandh begins
Correspondent
KOHIMA, JAN 3 (NPN): Indefinite bandh, jointly called by the Rengma Selo Zi (RSZ) and Rengma Students’ Union (RSU), began from Wednesday morning covering Tseminyu subdivision jurisdiction. All business establishments and transportation, both private and government, came to a grinding halt. The protest, demanding upgradation of Tseminyu sub-division to a full-fledged district headquarter, was endorsed by the Rengma Hoho and Rengma frontal organizations. RSZ and RSU also hoisted black flags at all the sub-divisional offices under Tseminyu, including ADC’s office. The volunteers at various stoppage points erected black flags and banners which read “Denial of Tseminyu district, Suppression of Rengma Tribe”. Speaking to Nagaland Post at the Rengma Hoho office Tseminyu, RSZ president, Kenneth Rengma said that the bandh will be intensified until their demand was met. He expressed displeasure over the state government’s talk about criteria
Student killed in Maharashtra shutdown violence MUMBAI, JAN 3 (IANS): A minor boy was killed in Nanded and several people were injured in Mumbai in sporadic incidents of violence which paralysed large parts of Maharashtra during a 10-hour shutdown called by Dalit parties on Wednesday. The ‘Maharashtra Bandh’ call was given by Bharipa Bahujan Mahasangh and other parties, ironically, to protest against Monday’s riots leading to the death of a youth from Nanded in Koregaon-Bhima in Pune district. District Superintendent of Police Chandrakishore Mina said the victim’s body has been sent for autopsy to ascertain the exact cause of the death. The family of the deceased alleged that the youth - Yogesh Prahlad Jadhav- was seriously injured during police caning to clear a road block. Maharashtra chief minister, Devendra Fadnavis said all the incidents of violence across the state shall be probed and appropriate action will be taken against the offenders. Dalit activists were seen seating on rail tracks, shouting slogans and waving flags to block train services in the city and suburbs of Mumbai, Thane and Palghar.
stating that since Nagaland statehood, various district headquarters and administrative headquarters were established and if the government had to talk about criteria, Rengma’s were second to none and deserved to become independent. The president added that they were not aware that the government had an official handbook of “criteria” for creation of districts and that there may be some commission or committee report. However, he said it was not known whether the cabinet had approved the criteria document or report. He said if government had to apply the terms of such a report, it only indicated that government was using the report as a tool to suppress the Rengmas. He added that hoisting the black flags at the government offices was a sign that “Democracy has murdered the rights of the Rengmas” and that since Rengmas had only one MLA, his voice was not heeded. A d d i n g m o r e, t h e president said if the government’s criterion was to have a minimum of two Assembly Constituencies, the state government never invited the Rengmas for dis-

cussion on the delimitation and based on such excuses, Rengmas will never get their due share. He recalled the Rengma tribe’s participation in the formation of the state and in the Naga political struggle and how Rengmas were denied their rights through poor infrastructure and educational institutions. The president said that subsequent governments had promised many things to the Rengmas but nothing materialized and said it was a complete betrayal of trust. He informed further that RSZ and RSU, during its meeting held on December 31, 2017, had decided to
demand the resignation of its MLA if state government does not fulfil their demand as it only showed that the single elected member’s presence in the assembly was not considered. According to RSZ and RSU, Tseminyu Sub Division has 38 government recognized villages and a total population of more than 56,000 (as per the 2011 census) with 69 % literacy. Meanwhile, it may be recalled that Nagaland Governor, P.B. Acharya, on December 17, 2015, during the 38th general conference of the RSU at Sendenyu Village, assured that a government college would be

They stressed further that the conflict is the direct escalation of a simmering issue which began more than 20 years ago. The SH has beseeched the State Government to amicably resolve the issue through all possible means so as to avoid aggravation of this same issue time and again.

BEIJING, Jan 3 (PTI): China Wednesday said it had “never acknowledged” the existence of Arunachal Pradesh as it kept mum over a media report that its troops intruded into the Indian side of the border in the frontier state. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Geng Shuang’s response came after a media report said that Chinese troops intruded into the Indian territory in Arunachal Pradesh for about 200 meters close to a village in upper Siang district. “First of all on the border issue our position is clear and consistent. We never acknowledged the existence of so called Arunachal Pradesh,” Geng told a media briefing. “For the specific situation you mentioned, I am not aware of it,” Geng said. China claims Arunachal Pradesh is part of South Tibet. The India-China border dispute covered 3,488 km along the Line of Actual Control (LAC). According to the re-
port, the Chinese troops who reportedly crossed over with the construction machinery last month were stopped by Indian soldiers. The Chinese troops reportedly left the construction equipment behind. “I want to mention that between China and India there is a well-developed mechanism for border related affairs. Through this mechanism, China and India could manage the border affairs. Maintaining peace and stability at the border suits both China and India,” he said. Asked whether there is another standoff between India and China similar to the one in Dokalam area, Geng said the “standoff which happened last year has been resolved properly”. The Chinese intrusion in Arunachal Pradesh reportedly took place around the same when National Security Advisor Ajit Doval and his Chinese counterpart Yang Jiechi held the 20th round of border talks in New Delhi on December 22, the report said.

Ipper said Gopal was mentally unsound and was arrested after the incident. Five persons were injured when they tried to save Amal from Gopal, the police said. Deodhar claimed that Amal was a BJP member. Election for the 60member Tripura Assembly is due early this year. Eight former Meghalaya legislators to join NPP today Correspondent
Shillong, Jan 3: Eight former Meghalaya legislators, including five former Congress legislators, who had quit as members of assembly, will be joining the NDA-affiliated National People’s Party (NPP) on Thursday to contest the upcoming assembly polls. “All the eight former legislators will be inducting into the party tomorrow at a public rally in Polo ground. The rally will also mark the launching of the election campaign,” NPP national president, Conrad. K. Sangma, said. The former Congress legislators include former deputy chief minister Rowell Lyngdoh, former cabinet ministers Prestone Tynsong, Coming One Ymbon, Sniawbhalang Dhar and Ngaitlang Dhar. Apart from the five Congress legislators, the other three are United Democratic Party legislator Remington Pyngrope, and Independents, Hopeful Bamon and Stephanson Mukhim. Sangma said NPP grassroots workers across the 60-assembly constituency in the state are upbeat and are working hard to ensure that the party forms the new government after the elections. “We (NPP) are on a comfortable driving seat
CM Manik Sarkar refuses to meet Governor Tathagat Roy New Delhi, Jan 3 (Agencies): Governor and Chief Minister of Tripura are officially up against each other. What led to this was a recent meeting called by the Governor, Tathagata Roy who invited the chief secretary and director general of police to the Raj Bhawan to discuss a few issues which were already discussed by him in a previous meeting with the Chief Minister, Manik Sarkar. Only last week, the governor had also called CM Manik Sarkar for a meeting. The need to call for another meeting so soon was enough to put Sarkar off, who then asked the DGP and CS not to attend the meeting, reported India Today. According to sources, Roy had more unanswered queries for which he had called the officials for another meeting. At the meeting, Roy wanted to discuss the killing of BJP supporters in the state. He also wanted to get
more details on the BJP-CPI (M) clash that took place in Bishalgarh. State BJP leaders alleged that Sarkar feared the possibility of CS and DGP mentioning certain things in the meeting which might be used against the state government, so he tried to stop the meeting. He in fact said that since he, as a Chief Minister, already met the Roy, there was no need for CS and DGP to meet him as well. Though Communist Party of India (Marxist) has been opposing Roy ever since his tenure began, this is for the first time that the state government has directly gone for an open confrontation with the governor. Reportedly, Roy also briefed the Union home ministry about this incident. This growing stand-off between Tripura’s CM and Governor has come at a time when the Assembly elections are only a month away.
and that is the reason these friends (former legislators) are leaving their respective political parties and one to be part of the NPP family,” the NPP Chief said. On Tuesday, Congress legislator Alexander Hek, Nationalist Congress Party legislator Sanbor Shullai besides Independent members – Robinus Syngkon and Justine Dkhar resigned as members of the assembly and joined the BJP. Last month, former Congress legislator P.N. Syiem, who is also the chief executive of the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council, resigned from the assembly and joined the newly floated People’s Democratic Front. However, former Meghalaya chief minister D.D. Lapang said the exodus of some Congress legislators to other political parties will have no negative impact on the ruling party. “Those who are not comfortable have gone away and those who went on their own could not take lock, stock and barrel with them as the original Congress supporters are there,” the veteran Congress legislators told journalists. “There will be no negative impact. I believe in the principle that no one is indispensable,” Lapang added.

Cong, BJP spar in Lok Sabha over Maharashtra violence
NEW DELHI, JAN 3 (IANS): The Congress and the BJP clashed in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday over the Maharashtra violence which left a young man dead. Congress leaders blamed the state’s ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for the unrest while the BJP accused the Congress of politicising the issue and “dividing the masses”. Before the issue was raised, Speaker Sumitra Mahajan cautioned that allegations and counterallegations cannot solve the problem. Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge said atrocities against Dalits were on the rise and blamed “some fascist powers” for it. The Congress demanded a probe in the BhimaKoregaon incident headed by a Supreme Court judge and a statement from Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the issue. “When Dalits start living with dignity, and organise some event, there are some people who try to disturb it. This happened
Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge speaks in the Lok Sabha in New Delhi on Wednesday, during the Winter Session of Parliament. (PTI) in Koregaon (in Pune district),” Kharge said. He said Dalits had never been a part of armies before the British came, to which Mahajan replied that Dalits were a part of Maratha ruler Shivaji’s Army. Kharge then said: “It is a bid to divide the Mahars and the Marathas by some Hindu extremist and the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh.” “Wherever the BJP is in power, there is discrimination against Dalits,” he added. Kharge blamed Modi
for being silent on the issue of atrocities against Dalits. Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ananth Kumar slammed the Congress for trying to divide the masses. “He (Kharge) does not want to resolve the problem in Maharashtra, he is trying to incite people. He is doing politics. “As the British divided and ruled the people, the Congress is doing the same... This should be a forum to give a message of peace,” he added. Trinamool Congress
leader Saugata Roy condemned the clashes while Shiv Sena MP Shivaji Adhalrao Patil urged the Centre to speak with the Maharashtra government on the situation. Raosaheb Patil Danve of BJP said the celebrations in Bhima-Koregaon had been taking place every year and no incident happened in the past. The Speaker then proceeded to take up legislative business but Congress members protested demanding a statement from Modi. As the Congress members trooped near the Speaker’s podium shouting slogans, the Speaker adjourned the House for around 10 minutes. Hundreds of thousands of Dalits had congregated around the Victory Pillar (Vijay Stambh) erected by the British in Sanaswadi village in Maharashtra when stone-pelting began, allegedly by some rightwing groups carrying saffron flags. In the clashes, more than 30 vehicles were torched or damaged. A young man was killed.

Community members thronged Dahisar checkpost, the critical entry point to Mumbai and staged a road blockade, preventing traffic movement in both directions. Stones were pelted at vehicles in parts of Goregaon, Jogeshwari, Powai, Bhandup, Chembur, Govandi and Andheri East in Mumbai and parts of Navi Mumbai. Incidents of violence and blockage of rail tracks at various locations on the Western Railway (WR), Central Railway (CR) and its Harbour Line kept disrupting the suburban network at regular intervals, while only four of the 12 services of the newly-introduced air-conditioned local trains could be operated. The dabbawalas also cancelled their services for
the day. Meanwhile, at least 40 BEST buses were damaged in stone-pelting incidents in different parts of Mumbai. Many shops and establishments also opened in the city and suburbs but downed shutters some hours later. The shutdown evoked greater response in mofussil areas compared to urban pockets of Thane, Nagpur, Pune and other cities. The coastal Konkan region reported a near-total shutdown, as did the Dalit strongholds of Marathwada like Beed, Latur, Solapur, Jalgaon, Dhule, Ahmednagar, Nashik and Palghar. The busy MumbaiPune highway was blocked for nearly an hour.

Maharashtra shutdown withdrawn MUMBAI, JAN 3 (IANS): Bharipa Bahujan Mahasangh President Prakash Ambedkar called off its ‘Maharashtra Shutdown’ which left large parts of Mumbai and rest of the state virtually paralysed for 10 hours since dawn on Wednesday. “The shutdown was peaceful and has evoked a huge response all over. I thank all my supporters for making it a success,” Ambedkar, the grandson of Dr B.R. Ambedkar, told media persons. He demanded that the state government should slap murder charges on the perpetrators of the violence and subsequent death of a youth in Koregaon-Bhima incident of January 1. Ambedkar cited the names of Shivjagar Pratisthan President Sambhaji Bhide Guruji and Hindu Janjagruti Samiti President Milind Ekbote, against whom complaints have been lodged by Pune police. “They should be arrested and face the same punishment as Yakub Memon (who was accused in the March 1993 Mumbai serial bomb blasts and subsequently hanged),” Ambedkar demanded. Nabi Azad told the Chair amid ruckus by the treasury benches. Bharatiya Janata Party members who were already on their feet started shouting and came into the aisles. Deputy Chairman P.J. Kurien, expressing his inability to proceed with the division of votes amidst the din, adjourned the House for the day. The BJP and its allies are in a minority in the Rajya Sabha and the result of a division of votes is a foregone conclusion. The ruckus came after Finance Minister Arun Jaitley, also the Leader of the House, failed to convince the Chair that a motion
nounced in the second half on Wednesday. However, the lawyers would not attend the court after paying condolences to the dead, the RJD chief ’s lawyer told reporters. Lalu Prasad was brought to the Central Bureau of Investigation court from Birsa Munda Central Jail here earlier. He was then taken back to the jail.
The CBI court had on December 23 convicted Lalu Prasad and 15 others in the case relating to the multimillion-rupee scam. Lalu Prasad’s lawyer told reporters that they would press for minimum punishment. According to them, the RJD chief could be awarded three to seven years in prison. If he gets
three years’ punishment, he would get bail soon after sentencing. The CBI court had acquitted another former Bihar Chief Minister Jagannath Mishra and five others in the case, relating to the fraudulent withdrawal of Rs 84.5 lakh from the Deoghar District Treasury between 1990 and 1994. Lalu Prasad was the
Chief Minister of then undivided Bihar from 1990 to 1997. The trial was completed on December 13 in the CBI court and 10 days later he was convicted. There were 34 accused, out of which 11 died during the trial while one turned CBI approver and admitted to the crime.

NEW DELHI, JAN 3 (IANS): The ruling BJP on Wednesday forced an adjournment in the Rajya Sabha when the opposition demanded a division of votes over the triple talaq Bill. Sparks flew in the upper House as the opposition demanded that the Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Bill be referred to a Select Committee. When the government did not yield, the opposition demanded division of votes in the House. “Sir, in a democracy majority opinion prevails. Let’s have a division of votes on the issue,” Leader of Opposition Ghulam
moved by Congress leader Anand Sharma to refer the Bill to a Select Committee was not valid as Sharma had not given prior notice for the motion. Sharma replied that Chairman M. Venkaiah Naidu had told the opposition during the Business Advisory Committee (BAC) on Tuesday to move the motion when the Bill was brought in the House.

T
amil film stars launching their own political party is nothing new to Tamil Nadu, a state which has been ruled for decades by icons connected with the tinsel world. The untimely death of AIADMK supremo and chief minister J. Jayalalithaa has opened a new field of political contests. In Tamil Nadu, politics has been synonymous with film stars or vice versa and it was not much of a surprise when two current Tamil superstars-Rajni Kanth and Kamal Hasaan announced their plans to plunge into politics. Both actors have promised to set up their and their entry is expected to liven up the politics of Tamil Nadu, which has been dominated for decades by the two south Indian parties. Tamil politics has been increasingly defined by adulation of leadership, which has also ensured that ideology ,practically often takes a back seat. Filmdom means a lot of money and with it, a recognition as the hero or heroine among the masses. It goes without saying the being a famous film star in Tamil Nadu is the most popular way to take the next step to politics. Both Kamal Haasan and Rajni Kanth have planned their roles from film heroes to political heroes. While Rajni Kanth is being studiously wooed by the AIADMK and BJP, Kamal Hasaan prefers to hit out at corruption and communal politics. Rajni Kanth is projected as a champion of the common man in the mold of MGR. He has declared his intention to form a political party that would contest all the 234 constituencies in Tamil Nadu in the next assembly elections in 2021 but at the same time, hasn’t made up his mind about 2019 Lok Sabha elections. Kamal Hasaan on the other hand, fashions himself an intellectual and would be expected to announce formation of his political party within coming weeks. He has, in the past, projected himself has having sympathies with the Left. Politics and films form a heady combination which was used to effect by C.N.Annadurai (Anna), the first Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam(DMK) chief minister. When Anna formed DMK, he effectively used cinema as a propaganda to spread the ideas of the DMK party. Actors like MGR, S.S. Rajendran and Sivaji Ganesan were used by DMK to gain popularity among common people. Later after the split in the DMK, MGR formed AIADMK and later the mantle fell on J.Jayalalithaa. The enormous clout these cinestar-turned-politicians wielded among their fans was evident by the demi-god status accorded to them and their ability to convert it into electoral wins. However, merely being famous stars does not guarantee success in electoral politics without the support of a massive party cadre as in the case of both the DMK and AIADMK. In the event of the two current film stars plunging into active politics, it would be a rewind of the past where then two film giantsShivaji Ganesan and MGR found themselves in two opposite camps. Those were the days of cinema but today there is social media and 24x7 print and electronic media and things are different. The people of Tamil Nadu would do well to choose leaders who have proven themselves as real people rather than reel people.
DailyDevotion Clouds and Darkness Clouds and darkness surround Him… —Psalm 97:2 A person who has not been born again by the Spirit of God will tell you that the teachings of Jesus are simple. But when he is baptized by the Holy Spirit, he finds that “clouds and darkness surround Him….” When we come into close contact with the teachings of Jesus Christ we have our first realization of this. The only possible way to have full understanding of the teachings of Jesus is through the light of the Spirit of God shining inside us. If we have never had the experience of taking our casual, religious shoes off our casual, religious feet— getting rid of all the excessive informality with which we approach God— it is questionable whether we have ever stood in His presence. The people who are flippant and disrespectful in their approach to God are those who have never been introduced to Jesus Christ. Only after the amazing delight and liberty of realizing what Jesus Christ does, comes the impenetrable “darkness” of realizing who He is. Jesus said, “The words that I speak to you are spirit, and they are life” (John 6:63). Once, the Bible was just so many words to us — “clouds and darkness”— then, suddenly, the words become spirit and life because Jesus re-speaks them to us when our circumstances make the words new. That is the way God speaks to us; not by visions and dreams, but by words. When a man gets to God, it is by the most simple way— words.

T
he Naga’s barter way of life started from their homes, each of the younger siblings would take a piece of meat from his/her plate during meals and offer it to the eldest. The recipient senior would then be obliged to tell bedtime stories at the end of each day. Eager to hear any kind of story, the younger siblings would barter their meat for tales narrated by the senior in a traditional style. Some younger siblings would fall asleep while the storyteller would take his time building up the story background and characters. People lived on barter economy between neighboring villages. Everything from domestic animals and grains to cloths and tools were used for barter. I remember how people from my village walked all the way to Assam for bartering with traders. The values of the bartered articles were fairly determined by both sides, and that fair exchange was the objective. When Christianity came to the tribal people this barter way of life led them to their thinking of God – barter theology. This barter theology is formulated by the tribal people around the idea that, “you do something for God if you want God to do something for you”. In other words, God will do good for you only when you pray hard to him, or, God will bless you when you give offerings to Him. Many people have the idea that Christians should pray long and sacrifice their meals in fasting if God’s loving heart is to be won. As we enter the New Year, 2018, how many Christians will pray to God, saying, “as we prayed last New Year’s day you have faithfully given us another new year this time also”. What if we forgot
Barter way of life to pray like that last New Year? Will this New Year come without our initiation of barter with God? This barter theology is applied to our prayers every Sunday worship. We pray, “Faithful God, even as we prayed last Sunday for another Sunday like this, you have given us this Sunday again to come together to worship you”. Does barter theology in some way relate to theology of salvation by work? Again, there is an intangible expectation of the believer that by doubling the offering amount, God’s favorable response will be instant. God certainly blesses the cheerful giver, but when the spirit of barter theology enters the spirit of the giver, God will send the giver away like the pleading woman in the parable who was dismissed by the judge just to get rid of her pester. More often, humans seek to exact the same value of what they give, but God walks the extra mile by blessing us more. This barter theology also guides the people’s relationship with their neighbors, that is, “do good to others expecting return of the same value”. As Christians how often do we do well to our neighbors going the extra mile honoring the God of Grace? God’s grace works in this barter between neighbors, adding extra value to the items of barter. God gives us even when we do not give God anything. If God were a party in a barter system, humans would never earn God’s grace. Jesus made it plain saying, “if you love those who love you, what reward do you have? And if you greet only your brothers and sisters, what more are you doing than others?” (Mt.5:46-47, NRSV). Jesus equated such barter theologians with the tax collectors
and the gentiles, who, in those days were considered sinners. Jesus taught the people a better principle of social relation than the one existing at that time (An eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth) and taught them the paradigm of the extra mile. Coming to the present statecraft of the tribal Christians, a barter politics has swallowed the whole content of the life-affirming principles in democracy. Because of the tribal people’s innate culture, democracy finds the most fitting ally to tribal polity. This principle also fits into their Christian faith, which has influenced the framing of the constitutions of early western countries. The early framers of constitutions incorporated factors such as justice, equity, and every person’s right to life and happiness. These factors are all from the teaching of the Bible. However, democracy may at times act in the spirit of barter polity alone, without going the extra mile. It all depends on those who interpret the democratic principles. Christian interpreters may tend to add love and mercy to the pure democratic rights in an attempt to go the extra mile. In rare moments when the criminal is forgiven or when the head of the country deserving impeachment is forgiven, the pendulum of decision oscillates between pure justice and the Christian extra mile, which here can be mercy and grace. Here, justice and mercy meet to preserve life. A clear evidence of tribal Christians doing barter politics is when a candidate succeeds in a state election. The agents may gather and decide whom the elected leader may favor and who may be ignored for not voting during his term of ministry.
At times, the leader may directly tell the pleading constituent, “you did not vote for me”. That is to say, “you did not barter your vote for my help”. What is proper is, an elected leader is supposed to rule over the whole state, including those who never thought of voting for him. In his constituency, 51% had voted him to power and the other 49% did not. Is the leader supposed to rule over the 51% only? This barter politics badly affects the ministry of the tribal leaders. If the leader thinks of only for the welfare of those who bartered their votes for him it would neither be democratic nor spiritual. These days, more citizens barter their vote for money. Worse than that situation is when the leaders are expected to meet double ends – the citizens take their shares from the candidates during the time of canvassing and blame the elected leaders for not developing their land. The citizens’ right to be developed is already bartered for money even before the leader is elected. This mentality is to make the leaders pay the exchange twice. A brand new and a healthy policy of tribal politicians will be to learn how to rule over the whole constituency, not only for those who bartered their vote for favor. Those who are benefited politically without barter will be morally moved to vote next election for the leader who had gone the extra mile. The barter system may sustain life but the politician whose magnanimity embraces those opponents to share his mercy has a future. Justice and mercy meet to save life, but whoever goes the extra mile creates a future. Ezamo Murry, Model Village
Dear Nagas, is it change you want?
T
ogether, we have the solution if you really want it. Read on..... The kind of problems that we have in our state cannot be solved in a conventional manner, simply because of its enormity where evil conduct has exceeded all conceivable limits. The word corruption is no longer strong enough to describe the situation we are in today. We are confused and ashamed with no hope in sight, in fact we are being stripped of our modesty. Yet if we don’t do anything now, the arrangement is being made by our politicians to drag us still further to a point we never want to find out. It is estimated that we have about three lakhs qualified individuals out of which about eighty thousands are unemployed youths and three lakhs plus are drop outs. Is it not enough to make a move? Young Nagas, we are talking about your today and tomorrow so if you don’t respond and rise up to the call when given, you could lose the chance of a lifetime for the dire change needed today in this forthcoming election. It is strongly expected that the Nagas will wake up from their slumber this time since the conditions are very favorable for this kind of movement, so when this happens, the concerned citizens should gather together in strength where they will have absolute authority to decide how to raise up 31 plus new candidates in order to replace the entire batch of these corrupt leaders, it is as simple as that. The entire population is frustrated and filled with negative energy, especially among the young people, hence this energy must be ventilated to form a force called “revolution”. If it is anything short of some kind of revolution, our kind of problems will not be solved, the history of the world has shown us. Believe in the power of people, mankind has done wonders in the past and it can happen right here if you could have the courage to believe. Unconventional? Yes, a kind of revolution. Solution? Yes, nothing short of replacing the entire batch of present corrupt leaders, because it is perfectly possible. Remember, it is the power of people with which we are going to challenge the corrupt forces. Situation in the state is saturated, now what we need is a spark somewhere to start the process of movement, so have some courage and await the opportunity in this January 2018. Kaka Zhimomi, Dimapur

I
(On Naga Army Day at headquarters, January 3, 2018)
t is a privilege for me to stand on the podium of Naga Army day celebration. I give my revolutionary salute to the Longvibu and his colleagues and all Naga Army gathered here. At the very outset, I pay homage to the departed souls of the Naga army martyred for the cause of Nagalim for Christ. They were the ones who stayed the course like the rock when storms of enemies’ attacks came. The storm comes and goes, but the rock stays. The flood comes and goes, but the rock stays. Let us honor them and remember them, who stood like the rock in the times of trials and ordeals and died like the rock. With the coming of the new year 2018, every one of us has renewed his commitment and decision for the cause. I believe the good Lord will lead all of us through out this blessed year. The Naga Army day is another added blessed day for us to celebrate. With the formation of Naga Army, the Naga people become a force to be reckoned. Why formation of Naga Army was necessitated? As people, land and God are inseparably interrelated so also the Government, the Army and the Church. They are the component parts of a state. Armies are not robots of the government as supposed by some people, they are also people in uniforms. Nowhere in history do we find a state without armies. Armies are the strong bulwarks of a people. A people without armies is defenseless. Armies are an organized
people in uniforms. Before the birth of Naga Army, the Naga people were like a city without walls exposed to the danger of subjugation by any invaders. A cultivator usually builds a fence around his field so that it protects crops and vegetables from animals or any destructive elements. Naga army is a strong tower of the Naga people. What makes Naga Army strong? What makes it revolutionary? It is the spirit of my people and the spirit of my Lord that make every member of NSCN strong like the rock. If any one of you has those spirits in him he is also the rock. Know the history of great generals and learn from them. Do you know how Gideon of old destroyed the strong walled city of Jericho? Do you know how David outfought Goliath the giant? Do you know how Naga army under the command of the then Capt. Markson overran the Assam Rifles Post at Oinam? Do you know how ‘Unification Camp’ at Vihokhu was uprooted by Naga army under the command of Lt. Col. Absolom supervised by Maj. Gen. Ramkathing Varah, the then Dy. Longvibu? Do you know how Lt. Gen. Ningkhan, the incumbent Longvibu escaped from the heavily guarded Guwahati Jail by outmaneuvering the enemies? Do you know how he risked his life in breaking the ice in the diplomatic field abroad? It was all through the power of prayer and strong determination. Hunters know the mind of the animals. Lions know the mind of buffalos. Apart from bravery, li-
ons are organized animals whereas buffalos are not. Know your enemies. Know the mind of your enemies if you want to be successful revolutionary soldiers; know the geography of your enemies if you want to master their territories; know the strength of your enemies if you want to be precise in your attacks on them; know the supply lines of your enemies if you want to clasp them by the neck; know the weaponry of your enemies if you want to outfight them; know the commanders of your enemies if you want to outdo them; know the allies of your enemies if you want an isolated fighting against your enemies; know the enemies of your enemies if you want to strengthen your position; know the mind of your people if you want to be the champion of your people and know the mind of God if you want to be an invincible force. All NSCN members are faithful political army of the nation. The Naga army is also a political army, not only a military army. I believe every one of you is spiritually and politically inspired and committed. One who is totally dedicated to a divine cause and fights for it with conviction, speaks for it with conviction and works for it with conviction is a Nazirite. Every Nazirite is a revolutionary, but every revolutionary is not necessarily a Nazirite. I don’t think that all Naga army are Nazirites. A soldier or a member of NSCN becomes a Nazirite only by conviction, commitment and total dedication to the cause, not by mere enrolment. Therefore, every
Naga Army should strive to become a Nazirite. I strongly believe that the Nagas will never perish so long as they have a hundred Nazirites or even ten. The Naga people have been longing for a political agreement with the government of India on the basis of mutual respect and recognition of rights. The historic Framework Agreement is the first Indo-Naga political agreement that opens up an era of a new relationship between the two peoples. The Framework Agreement is the legacy of both NSCN and GoI. We must value it and protect it at all costs. It speaks about the universal principle of democracy that sovereignty of a people lies in the people themselves and that the sovereignty of the Nagas is with the Naga people. It speaks about the recognition of sovereignty of the Nagas, identity of the Nagas, unique history of the Nagas and the land of the Nagas. However, in order to arrive at an amicable and acceptable solution for both the parties it was mutually agreed upon that the Indians and the Nagas will co-exist as two entities and share sovereign power between the two entities. Rest assured that this agreement will protect the future of the Nagas. Naga army is a fighting force in times of confrontation, but it is also a protective as well as a productive force in the time of peace. You must value and protect what you have made or achieved as a man keeps his precious things in a strong room. This solution is precious for the Naga people because they
have invested their times, energy, money, labor and lives for it for decades. Therefore, we are duty bound to guard it eternally. ‘Eternal vigilance is the price of freedom.’ I salute all the Naga army! Our people are proud of you. In spite of repeated attempts, the enemies could not subjugate the Nagas because of your loyalty to the cause with firm commitment. I salute all those of you who clung on to the national principle
even if many fellow workers ran away from the field betraying the cause, the people and the Lord to join forces with the enemies. You are Nazirites of the Nagas today. I hope you will still be the Nazirites of the Nagas tomorrow. The Naga people will ever adore you, the Nazirites of the Nagas. Future belongs to you. Thank you. God bless Naga Army! God bless NSCN! God bless Nagalim!

Live and let live Sir,
With scarce avenues for employment in the government sector and the absence of the private sector in our state of Nagaland, many of our youngsters are frustrated due lack of job opportunities and source of substance. This has driven many to take up activities under duress and are basically detrimental to our society. Now, considering the above circumstances, it has been seen that some people are involved in bootlegging in our dry state for their survival. If compared to other activities, this is a lesser sin though one cannot disagree that it definitely is a sin. Of late it has been seen that Central Security Forces are carrying out raids and MVCP and alcoholic drinks are being seized on a very regular basis. There is no denying the fact that it falls under their purview of duty to check these sort of activities, more so with the Arms Forces Special Power Act (AFSPA) in force. But, as already mentioned above, the lack of employment forces many to take up these sort of business to make ends meet. Considering the circumstances that prevail in the state at present, it is expected that both the Central govt. agencies as well as the state govt. agencies look into the matter in a sympathetic manner as it may end up destroying many families and also force many youths to take up activities which may be more harmful to our society. As it is, people who drink alcohol will find some way or the other to get their quota. So what is the harm if some can earn a livelihood out of it? Vinoto

War of words in LS over making Hindi official language at UN
NEW DELHI, JAN 3 (IANS): External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj and Congress leader Shashi Tharoor traded barbs in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday over making Hindi an official language at the United Nations. Tharoor questioned the need to push it while the Minister called his remark “ignorant”. Sushma Swaraj, in her reply to a question, said: “It is often asked why Hindi is not an official language in the UN. Today, I will want to tell the House, the biggest problem is the procedure.” The Minister explained that as per the procedure, two-thirds of the 193 members of the organisation -- which comes to 129 -- will have to vote in favour of making Hindi an official language and also share the financial expenditure that would be incurred in the process. “The problem comes when apart from voting, the burden of the amount also falls on them. Economically weaker countries that
Parliament house in New Delhi
support us shy away from this. We are working on it, we are making attempts to get support of countries like Fiji, Mauritius, Surinam... where people of Indian origin are there. “When we get that kind of support and they are also ready to bear the financial burden, it will become an official language,” she said. The Minister said the gover nment was ready to spend any amount of money to get Hindi listed as an official language but spending money would not serve the purpose. Sushma Swaraj also highlighted that
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and she had spoken in the UN in Hindi. “Even when we have (foreign) guests, if they speak in English, we speak in English. If they speak in their own language, we speak in Hindi. As far as glory of the language is concerned, the External Affairs Ministry never had so much work done in Hindi as now,” she said. Tharoor, who worked in the UN and announced his retirement after finishing second in the 2006 election for UN SecretaryGeneral, questioned the need to push for Hindi,
which he pointed out was not even the national language of India. “Hindi is not the national language, it is an official language. Seeking to promote Hindi raises an important question. Why do we need an official language in the UN? Arabic does not have more speakers than Hindi, but Arabic is spoken by 22 countries, whereas Hindi is only used as an official language by one country -- us,” he said. “The question is what purpose is being served by this. If indeed we have a Prime Minister or Foreign Minister who prefers to speak Hindi, they can do so and we can pay to get that speech to be translated. Why should we put our future Foreign Ministers and Prime Ministers who may be from Tamil Nadu in a position...” he said. “The government has to defend its position. I understand the pride of Hindi-speaking people, but people of this country who do not speak in Hindi also take pride in being Indian,” he said.

Hardeep Puri files nomination for RS seat
LUCKNOW, JAN 3 (PTI): Union minister Hardeep Singh Puri today filed his nomination as a BJP candidate for the by- election to a Rajya Sabha seat in Uttar Pradesh. The seat fell vacant following the resignation of Manohar Parrikar, who quit as defence minister after he became the Goa chief minister. His term was to end on November 25, 2020. A career diplomatturned-politician, 65-yearold Puri was sworn in as a minister in September and was allocated the housing and urban development ministry. But since he was not a Member of Parliament, he has to enter either the Lok Sabha or Rajya Sabha within the stipulated six months of taking oath. His election is all but certain in view of the BJP’s massive strength in the 403member UP Assembly. Puri was accompanied by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and BJP state chief Mahendra Nath Pandey. Speaking to reporters, Adtiyanath said, “Hardeep Singh Puri is an able person and has a long administrative experience”.
Congress has double standards on triple talaq bill: Jaitley
Arun Jaitley
NEW DELHI, JAN 3 (PTI): Senior BJP leader Arun Jaitley today accused the Congress of “double standards” in its stand on the triple talaq bill, saying it was trying to stall the bill in the Rajya Sabha after supporting it in the Lok Sabha. Addressing the BJP Parliamentary Party, the Union finance minister also said the government wanted a debate on the bill, which criminalises instant talaq, and its passage with a consensus like the GST bill, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ananth Kumar told reporters. “The Congress is showing double standards. It is trying to stall the bill in the Rajya Sabha after supporting it in the Lok Sabha,” Kumar quoted Jaitley as saying. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP chief Amit Shah were also present in the weekly meeting of BJP MPs. The government
has to depend on the opposition and other non-NDA parties in the Rajya Sabha for passage of its bills as it does not have a majority in the House, unlike the Lok Sabha where it enjoys strong support. Kumar said the government has been talking to the Congress and other parties to pass the triple talaq bill. The Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Bill was passed by the Lok Sabha last week. He added that a bill, which envisages constitutional status for the OBC Commission, will come up in the Lok Sabha again after the opposition forced amendments in the Rajya Sabha in the last session. The BJP has showcased the bill as proof of its commitment to empowering backward classes -- the proposed commission will enjoy more powers than its existing form. Social Justice and Empowerment Minister Thawar Chand Gehlot briefed MPs on the bill. Minority Affairs Minister Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi spoke about the government’s move to do away with requirement of ‘mehram’ (male guardian) for women, who are 45 years of age or older, going for Haj.
CBI court issues notice to Tejashwi Yadav RANCHI, JAN 3 (IANS): A special CBI court on Wednesday issued notices to former Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Tejashwi Yadav and three others over their statements regarding RJD chief Lalu Prasad’s conviction in the fodder scam case. “The CBI court of Shivapal Singh issued the notices asking why contempt should not be initiated against the four people for their statements issued after Lalu Prasad was convicted,” lawyer Arvind Singh told the media. Besides Tejashwi Yadav, the notices were issued to former minister and senior Rashtriya Janata Dal leader Raghuvansh Prasad Singh, RJD spokesman Manoj Jha and Congress leader Manish Tiwary. When Lalu Prasad was convicted in the fodder scam case on December 23, the RJD leaders had questioned the acquittal of former Bihar Chief Minister Jagganth Mishra. They said Mishra was a Brahmin and so he was acquitted and Lalu Prasad was convicted as he belonged to backward class.
Dec 2018 deadline to link Withholding donors’ names We must rise above our ‘microscopic identities’: Army chief locomotives via satellite: Rlys a regressive step: Congress NEW DELHI, JAN 3 (PTI): Army chief Gen Bipin Rawat has said that people should not get stuck in “microscopic identities” but rise together as one, as he exhorted the youth to join the force to feel the idea of India’s unity. “You want to feel the oneness, join the Army, and see how we people, from different backgrounds, live together as Indians. Remember first, we are all Indians. We are proud of that, and the nation must come first. Then we can learn to live together,” Rawat said yesterday. “We are Indians and we don’t call ourselves as Bengalis or Assamese or from Arunachal Pradesh,” he said.
Bipin Rawat
Rawat was interacting with 27 youths from Assam and Arunachal Pradesh, who were in New Delhi as part of a national integration tour. The students were visiting Delhi for the first time. They also met President Ram Nath Kovind yesterday. The Army chief, later interacting with reporters, said: “We have to rise above
the idea of microscopic identities and embrace ourselves as Indians.” He underlined that development cannot happen if a region is affected with insurgency. He urged the Indian youth to work hard and contribute actively to the nation-building process, by becoming teachers, engineers, and doctors. “Then go back to your villages and serve them. Assam has many good schools but not enough teachers. If there are hospitals in villages, not enough doctors,” he said. The students presented the Army chief a ‘gamocha’ - a traditional Assamese cloth, and a ‘xorai’ - a traditional offering tray with a stand at the bottom.
NEW DELHI, JAN 3 (PTI): Indian Railways has set a target of December 2018 to link all its locomotives via ISRO satellites, making it easy to track trains and communicate with their crew in real time, officials said. By year-end, all 10,800 locos of the railways will have antennas fixed on them and they will be monitored inside the driver’s cabin, senior officials of the national transporter told PTI. “We have already tried it on 10 locos and by December 2018 we will have this system installed in all our locos,” a senior railway board member said. Officials said trials for this system have been done on the New

The railways is also working with the Indian Space Research Organisation to use its satellitebased system to check accidents at unmanned railway crossings and track train movements. Working on a pilot project with ISRO, the railways has installed space agency-developed integrated circuit (IC) chips on some train engines. The Indian Regional Navigation Satellite System (or NaVIC) will be used to warn road users of approaching trains through hooters installed at unmanned road crossings.
NEW DELHI, JAN 3 (PTI): The Congress today hit out at the central government over the introduction of electoral bonds, alleging that withholding the donors’ names was a “regressive step” and would give unlimited access to the ruling party to misuse official machinery to “coerce” them. Chief spokesperson of the Congress Randeep Surjewala said today that hiding names of donors of electoral bonds was a “regressive step”. “Hiding ‘donor names’ of ‘Electoral Bonds’ is a regressive step that paints process of Electoral Funding to Modi Government’s favourite colour: BLACK! “Is it meant to stifle

receiving political parties can encash only through a designated bank account. The electoral bonds, which are being pitched as an alternative to cash donations made to political parties, will be available at specified branches of State Bank of India (SBI) for 10 days each in months of January, April, July and October. The bonds, which would be valid for 15 days, will not carry the donor’s name even though the purchaser would have to fulfil KYC norms at the bank, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley said in the Lok Sabha.

New Delhi, Jan 3 (PTI): Capital markets regulator Sebi on Wednesday allowed the commodity derivative exchanges to keep the highest transaction charge in the turnover slab of any contract at a maximum of double the lowest charge in the same segment. Currently, the maximum permissible ratio for the highest and lowest transaction charge in a slab is 1.5:1. “The exchanges will ensure that the ratio between highest to lowest transaction charges in the turnover slab of any contract is not more than 2:1,” Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) said in a circular issued today. The decision has been taken in consultation with the commodity derivative exchanges. The circular would come into force with effect from 30 days, the regulator noted. The bourses levy different transaction charges for different commodities’ contracts and even in the case of contracts of the same commodity. Sebi started regulating commodities market since September 2015, following the merger of Forward Markets Commission (FMC) with itself. Earlier in September 2016, the regulator had prescribed norm that need to be followed by the commodity derivatives exchanges while levying transaction charges for the commodity trade.

Ghosh said the GDP growth would be 6.5 per cent on unchanged base last year. NEW DELHI, Jan 3 (PTI): India’s economic growth is likely to be below 7 per cent this fiscal, say experts, citing GST disruption and lingering impact of note ban. The Indian economy grew 7.1 per cent in 201617, against 8 per cent in 2015-16. The Central Statistics Office (CSO) is scheduled to release its advance estimates of national income 2017-18 on Friday. “It is difficult for GDP to cross 7 per cent this fiscal unless the base is revised

Mr. Chandrashekhar explained that the bill proposes to raise the minimum wage substantially to about $100,000 if the company has to be exempted from the labour certification requirements. Also, the client deploying the H-1B visa worker will have to certify that no American worker will be displaced for the 5-6 year period. Further, the software services provider will have to notify the U.S. authorities if the client has displaced a worker, an obligation that is unprecedented, he said. Mr. Chandrashekhar added that many of these changes were “emotive and political” rather than being based on “economic arguments.” He said that Nasscom has shared its concerns with both Indian and the U.S. governments. ”...We will probably be having further interaction in next few months. In next couple of months, we expect to have interactions once again with the U.S. authorities,” he added.
Mumbai, Jan 3 (PTI): Ending its four-session rise, the rupee Wednesday retreated from its multi-year high and ended marginally lower by 5 paise at 63.53 against the US currency on fresh bouts of dollar demand from importers and banks. However, a stream of robust capital inflows from foreign investors and large corporates largely limited the fall. In the last four-day surge, the Indian currency had strengthened by a whopping 67 paise against the dollar. The rupee yesterday ended at a nearly 2-1/2 year high even as speculative traders turned little cautious, a dealer commented. The bill has been passed by the House Judiciary Committee and is now headed for the U.S. Senate. “We do not know the exact timeline but we have been told it will come up early 2018,” he said. Mr. Chandrashekhar said another “extreme concern” is that “in the name of protecting American jobs, this has been applied only to the so called visadependent companies that translates to Indian companies“. “There is no doubt we have been seeing an increasingly negative environment and this is a part of the protectionist, anti-globalisation trend,” he said referring to a slew of measures taken by the U.S. in the recent past, including increased visa scrutiny, premium visa processing being put on hold for a few months etc. Mr. Chandrashekhar also pointed out that the use of visas by Indian IT firms has fallen by 50% in the last two years and that the number now stands below 10,000.“It is below 10,000, which is a minuscule fraction of 85,000 visas [H-1B

NEW DELHI, JAN 3 (PTI): The proposed U.S. bill — Protect and Grow American Jobs — is riddled with “onerous conditions” and places “unprecedented obligations” on both Indian IT companies and clients using H-1B visas, software body Nasscom has cautioned. Nasscom said it has flagged its concerns around visa-related issues in the U.S. with the Senators, Congressmen and the administration, and will engage further in a dialogue over the next few weeks over the proposed legislation. The bill proposes new restrictions to prevent abuse and misuse of H-1B visas. It tightens the definition of visa-dependent companies, and imposes fresh restrictions in terms of minimum salary and movement of talent. Apart from prescribing higher minimum wages, the bill places the onus on clients that they will certify that the visa holder is not displacing an existing employee for a tenure of 5-6 years. “That formulation has conditions which are extremely onerous and makes it very difficult for people to not just get the visa but also on how they can be used,”

Won’t be ‘blackmailed’ by Trump’s threat: Palestinians
Pak must end reliance on US aid: Nawaz Sharif
Nawaz Sharif
Islamabad, Jan 3 (IANS): Former Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Wednesday urged Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi to devise a strategy to make the country self-sufficient and independent of the need for US aid. “There is no need for the US to refer to the Coalition Support Fund as ‘Aid to Pakistan’,” the PML-N President told the media here, Dawn reported. Sharif described as “disappointing” US President Donald Trump’s accusation that Pakistan was granting “safe haven” to militants Washington was hunting in Afghanistan. “Pakistan has been involved in somebody else’s war for over 17 years. The country has suffered the brunt of the damage the world has seen since 9/11,” Sharif said. “The US President should not forget that my ... Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) gover nment pledged to eradicate terrorism from Pakistan when it came into power in 2013.” The ousted Prime Minister noted that responsible members of the international community respected the norms of diplomacy when in direct communication with other nation states. “Pakistan should not be taunted or threatened with the prospect of aid and labelling the CSF as aid is not correct,” he said.

region. “We pay the Palestinians HUNDRED OF MILLIONS OF DOLLARS a year and get no appreciation or respect,” Trump tweeted. “With the Palestinians no longer willing to talk peace, why should we make any of these massive future payments to them?” It was not immediately clear whether Trump was threatening all of the budget, worth USD 319 million in 2016, according to US government figures. The United States has long provided the Palestinian Authority with muchneeded budgetary support and security assistance, as
well as an additional USD 304 million for UN programmes in the West Bank and Gaza. Israel receives more than USD 3 billion in military aid per year from Washington. Abbas’s spokesman said they were not against negotiations, but that talks should be “based on international laws and resolutions that have recognised an independent Palestinian state with east Jerusalem as its capital”. “Jerusalem is the eternal capital of the state of Palestine and it is not for sale for gold or billions,” Nabil Abu Rudeina told AFP. Senior Palestinian official Hanan Ashrawi said in a statement that “we will not be blackmailed”. “President Trump has sabotaged our search for peace, freedom and justice,” she said. “Now he dares to blame the Palestinians for the consequences of his own irresponsible actions!” However, several Israeli ministers voiced support for Trump, with the country’s right-wing government
having seized on the US president’s support to push ahead with initiatives seen as dealing further blows to remaining hopes for a twostate solution. Culture and Sport Minister Miri Regev, from Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s Likud party, said “you cannot on the one hand receive USD 300 million in American aid per year and at the same time close the door on negotiations”. “We are dealing with a president who says what he thinks clearly and does not resort to diplomatic convolutions that mean nothing,” Regev told Israel’s army radio. Trump came to office boasting that he could achieve the “ultimate deal” that secures peace in the Middle East, something that has eluded presidents since the late 1960s. For most of the past half century the United States has been seen as the indispensable -- if sometimes imperfect -- arbiter of the peace process. Trump’s actions are likely to cast that further in doubt.
Ethiopia to release all political prisoners London, Jan 3 (Agencies): Ethiopia’s prime minister has announced the release of all political prisoners and the closure of a notorious detention centre which allegedly used torture to extract confessions. Hailemariam Desalegn told a press conference charges would also be dropped for those still awaiting trial, reported BBC. The move was designed to allow political dialogue, he said. Ethiopia is accused by human rights groups of using mass arrests and detention to stifle opposition. However, this is the first time the government has admitted to having any political prisoners, previously describing them as “criminals”, BBC Ethiopia correspondent Emmanuel Igunza
says. Campaign group Human Rights Watch (HRW) has accused the government of using anti-terrorism laws to jail its critics. The exact number of people in detention is not known. However, thousands have been detained since 2015, when there were widespread protests calling for political and economic reforms, prompting a crackdown. Just days ago, 19 people linked to the Ginbot 7, deemed a rebel group by the government, were jailed on terrorism-related charges. We d n e s d a y ’ s a n nouncement included the closure of Maekelawi - a detention facility in the capital, Addis Ababa, which HRW alleged was using illegal interrogation methods
back in 2013. The government denied all allegations of abuses at the centre. However, it has now decided the prison will become a “modern museum”. A new detention centre will be opened, Mr Hailemariam said, which would comply with international standards. It is unclear exactly what prompted the decisions, which came after days of consultations within the ruling coalition, the Ethiopian People’s Revolutionary Democratic Front (EPRDF). However, the privately owned Addis Standard newspaper links it to a day of action across social media at the end of December, raising awareness of the plight of political prisoners.

Ramallah (Palestinian Territories), Jan 3 (AFP): Palestinian leaders said Wednesday they will not be “blackmailed” after US President Donald Trump threatened to cut aid worth more than USD 300 million annually, his latest provocative move that could upturn years of careful diplomacy. Relations between Trump’s White House and the Palestinians were already tense after the US president’s recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital last month. The December 6 announcement concerning the disputed city led Palestinian president Mahmud Abbas to say the United States could no longer play any role in the Middle East peace process. Trump’s threat in a tweet yesterday to try to force the Palestinians into negotiations led to further outrage, though Israeli ministers lauded the move. The Palestinians rely heavily on international aid, with many analysts, including Israelis, saying such assistance helps maintain stability in a volatile

High-tech ship en route to resume hunt for MH370 Kuala Lumpur, Jan 3 (AFP): A high-tech vessel run by a US exploration firm is en route to resume the hunt for flight MH370 in a new bid to solve one of aviation’s greatest mysteries. The Malaysia Airlines jet disappeared with 239 people on board in March 2014 en route from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing after diverting from its flight path. No sign of the plane was found in a 120,000 square kilometre (46,000 square mile) zone selected by satellite analysis of the jet’s likely trajectory and the Australian-led hunt - the largest in aviation history - was called off in January last year. But it looks set to resume soon. Research vessel Seabed Constructor, leased by exploration firm Ocean Infinity, has set off from South Africa for the Indian Ocean with the aim of arriving in the search zone by mid-January, a source familiar with the matter said. It is hoped by this time the Malaysian government and Ocean Infinity will have finalised a deal for the hunt to resume.

Khaleda Zia
Dhaka, Jan 3 (IANS): Bangladesh Nationalist Party chairperson Khaleda Zia has warned the government that no matter how hard it tries, it will not be able to hold the 11th parliamentary elections by keeping the BNP out of the mix. “We are an electionoriented party. We must take part in elections. No one can keep us out of the polls even if they want to. We will join the election,” Zia told a gathering of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal in the capital. “It’s not going to happen... if you (government) think you will announce the election after detaining our people. No election like that of 2014 will be held in Bangladesh any more. The elections will be inclusive in this country,” the BNP chief was quoted as saying by bdnews24.com on Wednesday. She said no election would be “acceptable” by

Tehran, Jan 3 (Agencies): Huge crowds of protesters supporting Iran’s government gathered in several cities across the country on Wednesday, state TV IRIB reported, in an attempt to counter a week of rallies against the government. Thousands of pro-government protesters marched through the capital Tehran, some chanting “Death to America” after Iranian officials blamed the US and its allies for provoking days of unrest and violence in the country, reported CNN. State media reported that families, seniors and students were among Wednesday’s protesters, but images on television were mostly of middle-aged and older men. Many held images of Iranian President Hassan Rouhani and waved the national flags. Twenty-one people have been killed and 450 people arrested during the anti-government rallies, which began last Thursday over the country’s stagnant economy and rising living costs, but quickly developed into a broader outcry against the government. The protests have become the most powerful challenge to the Iranian government’s authority since mass demonstrations in 2009.

keeping her party out, claiming it was the largest in the country. “Because the entire world has realised that the election with Hasina in power was not fair and it won’t be,” the former Prime Minister said. The BNP sat out of Parliament after around two-and-half decades by boycotting the 2014 elections held with Hasina as the Prime Minister. The party has been demanding dissolution of Parliament and formation of a “non-partisan, facilitating” government before the general elections, a demand the ruling Awami League has refused to entertain. Zia renewed the demand, claiming that Hasina and her party decided to oversee the elections “to perpetuate power”. She claimed the current government was “not elected by the people and everything happens in the country on Hasina’s orders now and that is why it is going backward”. She criticised the government for not appointing a Chief Justice since the resignation of Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha and alleged that the authorities “forced” him out at “gunpoint”.

referred Rolling Stone to the complaint, but declined to comment further. L a s t M ay, S p o t i f y agreed to a $43 million settlement in a similar case, a class action suit led by songwriters David Lowery and Melissa Ferrick (a judge still needs to approve the settlement). Some, however, were not satisfied with the settlement, including Bob Gaudio - a founding member of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons, who filed a lawsuit in July - and Wixen. In its lawsuit, Wixen accuses Spotify of failing to obtain either a direct license or a compulsory license to use the songs in their catalogue. They also claim Spotify outsourced this task to a licensing and royalty service, the Harry Fox Agency, that was “ill-equipped to obtain all the necessary mechanical licenses.” Wixen’s roster also includes Zack De La Rocha and Tom Morello of Rage Against the Machine, the Black Keys’ Dan Auerbach, Steely Dan’s Donald Fagen, David Cassidy, Stevie Nicks, Kenny Rogers and Kim Gordon. In September, many of these artists spoke out against the Lowery/Ferrick settlement, though they did so in a court statement filed by Wixen. Spotify has since questioned whether Wixen has been authorized to speak on behalf of their clients in this manner, noting

disappear in another 30 years and the reason is none other than climate change. According to experts, the cacao trees, which need heavy rainfall for growth, are struggling to grow due to warmer climates. A report in metro. co.uk quoted US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration as saying that a temperature rise of just 2.1C over the next 30 years could spell doom for chocolate industry on the planet and no amount of rain could compensate for the rise in mercury.
African countries such as Cote d’Ivoire and Ghana, which produce more than 50% of the world’s chocolate, are testimony to this problem. “Unlike other tree crops that have benefited from the development of modern, high yielding cultivars and crop management
techniques to realise their genetic potential, more than 90 per cent of the global cocoa crop is produced by smallholders on subsistence farms with unimproved planting material,” Doug Hawkins, from Londonbased research firm Hardman Agribusiness told MailOnline. (ANI)

ixen Music Publishing, which owns works by Tom Petty, Neil Young, Weezer, the Doors and more, has sued Spotify for using thousands of songs allegedly without license and compensation, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The publishing company is reportedly seeking damages worth at least $1.6 billion, plus injunctive relief. Wixen’s lawsuit follows several lawsuits that have focused on Spotify’s alleged failure to pay royalties on a song’s musical composition. Recorded songs have two separate copyrights: The sound recording, which is typically owned by the record label, and the musical composition (also known as the “mechanical license”), which is owned by the songwriter and publisher. The Wixen suit reads: “Prior to launching in the United States, Spotify attempted to license sound recordings by working with record labels but, in a race to be first to market, made insufficient efforts to collect the required musical composition information and, in turn, failed in many cases to license the compositions embodied within each recording or comply with the requirements of Section 115 of the Copyright Act.” A representative for Spotify declined to comment. A representative for Wixen
that standard administrative agreements typically allow publishers to negotiate licensing details but don’t say anything about litigation. Per THR, Spotify’s lawyers filed court papers Friday claiming Wixen “sent a letter to its clients stating that it would submit Requests for Exclusion in their names unless - within a short time frame - the client affirmatively provided Wixen Music with contrary instructions. But that letter does not confer the requisite authority on Wixen Music. In sending the letters, Wixen Music effectively assumed that the recipients’ silence would grant it the power to opt the recipients out of the certified class. But that approach is contrary to law: because the right to opt out of a class action is an individual right, any attempt to exercise that right without express authorization is invalid.” (Rolling Stone)

India’s hopes in the singles competition of the Tata Open Maharashtra tennis tournament took another blow on Wednesday as Yuki Bhambri lost to France’s Pierre-Hugues Herbert 6-4, 3-6, 4-6 in the second round here. In what was the toughest test for Bhambri so far in the tournament, the World no.118 failed to capitalise on his start where he won the first set 6-4 against one of the best players at this year’s tournament in PierreHugues Herbert. Bhambri looked confident from the start but after winning the first set comfortably, the 25-year-old Indian seemed to have lost his touch as Herbert fought back into the match at the Mhalunge Balewadi Stadium. With a total of 13 aces in the match, Herbert did well in making the most of his serving, but it was Bhambri who had the momentum going into the second set as the crowd was also cheering him on.

The TOP Scheme aims to identify, groom and prepare potential medal prospects for Olympic and Paralympic Games. The selected athletes are provided financial assistance for their customised training at institutes having world class facilities and for other necessary support. Answering another question, Rathore informed that 110 and 67 sportspersons failed dope tests in 2015 and 2016 respectively. The minister said in a bid to eradicate doping, the government has decided to establish regional centres to spread awareness and impart anti-doping education. “Government of India has decided to establish five regional centres to increase the anti-doping education and awareness at all levels of sports in the country. minute. Aguero missed two chances before halftime, and another soon after the break. But the Argentina striker got his 13th league goal of the season when he prodded in from close range after Watford goalkeeper Heurelho Gomes fumbled a cross from De Bruyne. That was Aguero’s sixth goal in his last three games against Watford, against whom he scored a hat-trick away this season.
Gray was denied by a superb diving save from City goalkeeper Ederson Moraes late in the first half but was faced with an empty net when Andre Carrillo crossed from the left after bursting clear. Gray couldn’t miss. The draw against Palace ended City’s record 18match winning run. The r e sul t m e a ns Chelsea must beat Arsenal on Wednesday if it is to cut the gap to City to 14 points.

MANCHESTER, Jan 3 (Agencies): Raheem Sterling scored the quickest goal of the Premier League season at 38 seconds to set Manchester City on its way to a 3-1 win over Watford that moved the leaders 15 points clear on Tuesday. In-form winger Sterling got the goal, firing home from a Leroy Sane centre. Christian Kabasele scored an own goal and Sergio Aguero added a third as City bounced back from dropping points for only the second time this

Andre Gray scored a consolation goal for Watford in the 82nd minute, just as City was about to go six hours without conceding. No threat to India’s No.1 status
DUBAI, JAN 3 (PTI): India’s status as the No.1 Test side in ICC rankings will remain intact irrespective of how the series against South Africa pans out, but the Proteas will join the visitors at the top if they win all the three matches. Faf du Plessis’s side is presently 13 points behind Virat Kohli’s team, which is sitting on top of the table on 124 points. However, both the sides will finish on 118 points if the South Africa side makes a clean sweep of the series which starts in Cape Town on January 5, the International Cricket Council said in a statement. Even in that scenario, India will be ranked above South Africa when the points are calculated beyond the decimal point. In such a situation, India will be on 118.47 points, while South Africa will be on 117.53.

S H E N Z H E N, Ja n 3 (Agencies): World No.1 Simona Halep came from a set down to defeat China’s Duan Ying-Ying and advance to the quarterfinals of the Shenzhen Open on Wednesday, 3-6, 6-1, 6-2. With the victor y, Halep not only advances to the last eight at the WTA Internatonal event, but secures the No.1 seed for the upcoming Australian Open ahead of Caroline Wozniacki and Garbiñe Muguruza. “I’m not thinking about the ranking, I’m not thinking about the Australian Open,” Halep said after her Shenzhen victory. “I will just keep the same
routine and same things to do. I’m just thinking about the match tomorrow...I want to be focused just here.” Looking for her first victory over a Top 10 player, the big-hitting World No.91 started brilliantly and blasted her way to a one-set lead for the second time in two career meetings against Halep. Nonetheless, the Romanian authored an emphatic comeback against the Chinese No.4, having also done so in similar fashion on grass at the Aegon International in Eastbourne last June. “I knew that she’s playing hard and hitting every ball, so I knew that
I had to be very strong in my legs,” the Romanian said of the second round match. “After the first set, I knew I had to find the rhythm a little bit, to stay closer to the baseline and just open the court better, which I did very well. It was not easy, even though the scores were 6-1, 6-2 - it was a very tough match.” Halep took advantage of a dip in form from Duan over the course of the 98minute victory, breaking the Chinesewoman five times in the second and third sets after not having a break point in Duan’s first five service games. After connecting on 72% of her first serves in the opener, Duan’s percentage hovered in the mid-to-high 50s over the next two sets, allowing the World No.1 several opportunities to return second serves, which she duly took advantage of by winning 15 of the 20 points played. When all was said and done, Halep posted 21 winners to just 13 unforced errors in the match, while Duan was unable to keep pace with her furious start and ended the match with eight more unforced errors (27) to winners (19) overall.

Mahendra Singh Dhoni
MUMBAI, Jan 3 (PTI): India skipper Virat Kohli and his predecessor Mahendra Singh Dhoni are among the top players who are set to be retained by their respective IPL franchises, Royal Challengers Bangalore and comeback outfit Chennai Super Kings respectively. Another franchise
making a return after serving a two-year suspension, Rajasthan Royals, will certainly go for Australia captain Steve Smith, considering the form he has been in. Each team can opt for up to five players by virtue of a combination of Player Retention (Pre Player Auction) and Right to Match (RTM) (during the Player Auction), according to the decision of the IPL GC at its meeting in New Delhi on December 6. There can be a maximum of either three retentions or three RTMs at the discretion of the franchises and if there is no retention before player auction, then franchises can have up to three RTMs, as per the norms put in place by the IPL GC. The break-up is: Maximum number of 3 capped Indian players, 2 overseas players and 2 uncapped Indian players each. The player pool avail-
able for CSK and RR for retention/RTM will be the players who played for them respectively in IPL 2015 and who were part of Rising Pune Supergiant and GL squads in IPL 2017, as per the norms. The minimum spend has been fixed at 75 per cent of the salary cap for each season. The player retention price guideline for salary cap charged has also been set as Rs 33 crore (for 3 players pre auction), Rs 21 crore (for 2 players pre auction) and Rs 12.5 crore (for 1 player retained preauction). Each squad can consist of a maximum number of 25 players (up to 8 overseas players) and a minimum of 18.
NE Utd sack coach Joao Deus after dismal ISL show
Joao de Deus
Guwahati, Jan 3 (PTI): NorthEast United FC have sacked their Portuguese coach Joao de Deus after their dismal show in the ongoing Indian Super League season. The John Abraham-owned side have won just one match out of seven they have played so far. They have lost five, the most among the 10 teams, and drawn one, and are at ninth spot in the league table spot with four points “Joao de Deus and his assistant (Joao Pinho) have been sacked after the sides dismal show in the league,” a team official told PTI on condition of anonymity. Goalkeeping coach Joseph Sidy is expected to take charge of the team before a head coach
is appointed. NorthEast United play FC Goa at home on January 6. Joao Deus sacking came a day after fellow ISL side Kerala Blasters showed head coach Rene Meulensteen the door. NorthEast United had appointed Joao de Deus in July last year with hopes of overturning their fortunes this time around after failing to qualify for the knockout stages in the last three years since the leagues inception. This season, NorthEast have scored just twice in seven games while conceding 12. With just a win in their bag, the north-eastern side again look like to miss out of a top four finish unless they produce a turnaround in their fortune.
