Govt’s claims of Covaxin efficacy questioned

NEW DELHI, JAN 4 (AGENCIES): In a move that is seen to promote ‘Made in India’ products, Bharat Biotech a Hyderabad firm has been given the nod to sell its Covaxin. The Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation on Sunday accorded approval for restricted emergency use of the Oxford COVID-19 vaccine Covishield, manufactured by the Serum Institute of India (SII), and the indigenously developed vaccine Covaxin of Bharat Biotech. Several experts have raised concern over the “hasty approval” granted to the COVID-19 vaccines despite the lack of adequate efficacy data. A doctor-cum-research head of a lab affiliated to a government research lab also expressed reservations. “At this point, I wouldn’t advise Covaxin. All we seem to know is that it’s safe and so may not be harmful but efficacy is a different matter and needs to be proved,” the expert said requesting anonymity. “In the interest of transparency, we ask that the regulator share detailed rationale or the decision along with disclosure of data... We are baffled to understand

what scientific logic has motivated top experts in the SEC (Subject Expert Committee) to approve this vaccine (Covaxin) post haste,” Malini Aisola, of the All India Drug Action Network, said in a statement. However, Randeep Guleria, Director, All India Institute of Medical Sciences, referred to Covaxin as a “backup vaccine” and added that it is to be used if it was not clear how efficacious the SII vaccine would be. However, noted virologist Shahid Jameel said he does believe that eventually Covaxin would turn out to be safe and show more than 70 per cent efficacy. “I say this based on the platform, which is widely used and Bharat Biotech’s own track record of successfully making inactivated viral vaccines,” he said. He also said his concerns are based on the processes adopted for approving the vaccine and also on the utterances of people in responsible positions. “If approval requires both safety and efficacy data for a representative population, phase 2 safety and immunogenicity do not fulfil that criteria,” he said.

Nagaland bat study: Swamy to file CBI complaint

Dzükou fire: NPF slams PDA China denies coronavirus Nagaland COVID-19 tally 11935 govt’s lackadaisical attitude leaked from Wuhan lab COVID-19 STATUS AS ON january 4, 2021

DIMAPUR, JAN 4 (NPN): BJP Member of Parliament (Rajya Sabha) Subramanian Swamy has said that he would file a complaint with the CBI on the “Nagaland Bat Virus illegal study”. In a tweet, Swamy said “I will file with CBI a complaint on the Nagaland Bat Virus illegal study conducted by Tata’s NCBS in collaboration with Wuhan University and PLA. The US Army may also been involved with NCBS. It is completely antinational & illegal since mandatory clearance from ICMR was not taken.” Swamy claimed that Bat Virus Study was not submitted to ICMR of Health Ministry, which he said was mandatory. “The Report of the illegal study was signed by Bat woman She Zhengli of Wuhan U and Uma Ramakrishnan of Tata’s NCBS. This was admitted when questioned by me during a Standing Committee hearing,” he claimed. It may be mentioned that following media reports regarding study of bats in Nagaland, National Centre for Biological Sciences on February 4, 2020 clarified that no biological samples or infectious agents were transferred into or out of India and stressed that the study had no connection with corona viruses.

Urges Centre for CBI, NIA probe DIMAPUR, JAN 4 (NPN): Expressing pain and anguish over the ravaging wild fire at Dziikou valley, NPF slammed the PDA government for its “lackadaisical attitude” and urged the chief minister or his ministerial cabinet to personally survey area and do the needful steps to contain the fire as well as to protect the valley. NPF stated that since the Dzükou valley can be termed as a National asset, it urged the Centre to immediately look into the matter with great seriousness and may even involve the CBI or NIA to probe the cause of the inferno. Alleging that the inferno cannot be considered as a natural disaster, but a man made fire causing great

“That is why we conduct a phase 3. It is the closest you get to a population. Where is that data? Vaccines are not drugs. They are given to healthy people. They are prevention not a treatment. Both safety and efficacy is required,” he said. He also questioned what is an approval for a ‘backup’? ‘Does this mean that if needed, a vaccine of unproven efficacy would be used?’ He said the biggest concern is that ‘sidestepping’ processes and poor/ complex communication will fuel vaccine hesitancy

in India. “There is already evidence of that on account of fast tracked development timescales. Our country has one of the finest immunisation programmes. It will also undermine the global value of India’s vaccine industry, which is first rate by any measure,” he said. Indian Council of Medical Research Director General Dr Balram Bhargava had Sunday said Covaxin is based on an inactivated whole virus, having potential to target mutated coronavirus strains including the UK-variant, and it was a major reason

for giving it a conditional nod. He, however, had also said no clear data regarding the efficacy of the vaccine is available so far. “The data generated so far demonstrates a strong immune response (both antibody as well as T cell) and in-vitro viral neutralisation. The ongoing clinical trial is the largest trial on 25,800 subjects, in which 23,000 volunteers have already been enrolled including subjects with comorbid conditions, and the vaccine has demonstrated safety till date,” he (Cont’d on p-8) said.

Dzükou valley fire ‘under control’

Vax to cost Rs. 219-292 to govt, higher price for pvt mkt

PTI adds: COVID vaccine developed by AstraZeneca and the University of Oxford will cost USD 3-4 per shot (Rs 219-292) to the government and will be priced at double that rate in private market ones such sales open up, said the CEO of its Indian manufacturer on Monday. Serum Institute of India, the world’s largest vaccine manufacturer, has a licence to produce the shot and has already manufactured close to 50 million doses. Its CEO Adar Poonawalla told PTI that the company will start selling the Covishield to the government and GAVI (Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunization) nations in the first stage, followed by the private market. Indian drug regulator on Sunday approved Covishield and Bharat Biotech’s Covaxin for restricted emergency use in the country. “We want the vaccine to be affordable and accessible to all. The government of India will receive it at a far more affordable price of USD 3-4, since they will be buying in a larger volume,” he said. Only after meeting their requirements, “the private market will open up where the pricing would be USD 6-8 per dose, he said. Serum will have 100 million doses in a month, and will possibly double it by April.

harm not only to the beauty of the valley but also to the environment, NPF said that stringent action should be initiated against any miscreants found responsible for the fire. Besides being a tourist hotspot, NPF said that the valley was also home to various species of flora and fauna and burning of such forest will deeply dampen the ecological balance. Meanwhile, NPF lauded Governor, RN Ravi for showing his personal concern as the latter visited the blazing valley to take first hand information. It also appreciated the Air Force, National Disaster Response Force, State Disaster Response Force, DC and SP Kohima, Forest department, Southern Angami Youth Organization volunteers and all those involved for giving their best effort to douse the blazing fire.

Says global outbreaks caused pandemic

BEIJING, JAN 4 (PTI): China on Monday vehemently refuted the US charge that the novel coronavirus was leaked from a bio lab in the country and asserted that the pandemic was likely to have been caused by separate outbreaks in multiple places in the world. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Hua Chunying’s remarks came amidst reports that a ten-member team of the World Health Organisation (WHO) scientists would visit China this month to probe the origin of the coronavirus, which emerged in Wuhan in December 2019. Beijing is yet to confirm the visit by the WHO team and remained silent about granting permission for it to visit Wuhan city in central China. “I have no detailed information for you,” Hua told a media briefing here when asked about the visit of the WHO team and whether its schedule included a visit to Wuhan. China has been proactively questioning the widely-held view that the deadly outbreak broke out in a wet market in Wuhan where the live animals are sold. The market remained closed and sealed since early last year. In May 2020, the World Health Assembly (WHA)- the governing body of the 194-member states of WHO- approved a resolution to set up an independent inquiry to conduct an “impartial, independent and comprehensive evaluation” of the international re(Cont’d on p-8) sponse as well as that of WHO.

As on January 4, there were 173 active cases while 11551 had recovered from the infection and 132 migrated. Meanwhile, India’s virus caseload rose to 1,03,40,469, while the death toll increased to 1,49,649 with 214 new fatalities, Health ministry stated. Govt-farmers talks end in deadlock, next meet on Jan 8 New Delhi, Jan 4 (PTI): The seventh round of talks between protesting unions and three central ministers ended inconclusively on Monday as farmer groups stuck to their demand for the repeal of three farm laws, while the government listed out various benefits of the new Acts for the growth of the country’s agriculture sector. Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar said he remains hopeful of a solution in the next meeting on January 8, but asserted that efforts need to be made from both sides for a solution to be reached (taali dono haathon se bajti hai). He also said no outcome could be reached in today’s meeting as farmer leaders remained adamant on one issue of repeal of the laws, but the government wanted a clause-wise discussion on the legislations to take forward the talks.

Farmers from Punjab, Haryana, and Rajasthan head towards Delhi, to join the main agitation, Monday. (PTI)

Farmer leaders, however, alleged that it was the government’s “ego problem” that was coming in the way of resolving the issues and they insisted they would not relent on their key demands for the repeal of the three laws and a legal guarantee for the MSP (minimum support price) system for procurement of their crops. From the very beginning of the meeting,

union leaders kept on insisting on the repeal of the three contentious farm laws and the two sides took a long break after just about one hour of discussions. During the break, representatives of protesting farmers had their own food, arranged from langar (community kitchen), as they have been doing for the last few times. However, unlike the last round of talks on

He said 14 sorties were carried out during the day and 28,000 litres of water was dropped by these choppers, taking the total number of sorties till date to 56 and 75,000 litres of water dropped. He informed the meeting that IAF would be operating its choppers from sunrise to sunset on Tuesday to contain the spread of fire. Shihab claimed that, as per IAF assessment, the fire was well within control and expressed his optimism that the situation would be totally brought under control in a day or two. He said IAF was carrying out the entire operation in coordination with the State government, Indian Army, Assam Rifles, Dimapur civil airfield, Kohima

DIMAPUR, JAN 4 (NPN): The overall situation in Dzükou Valley, where a fire has been raging since December 29 and has turned vast areas into cinders, was now more or less under control. Informing this, deputy commissioner (DC) Kohima and District Disaster Management Authority chairman Mohammed Ali Shihab A told a review meeting here on Monday that fire line cutting was carried out in full swing, while four India Air Force (IAF) helicopters, two helicopters from Rangapahar Military Station and two from Dimapur civil airfield were carrying out operations to contain the inferno by dropping water from Bambi buckets.

December 30, the ministers did not join the union leaders for the langar food and were seen having their own discussion separately during the break, which lasted for almost two hours. The two sides got together again to resume their discussions at around 5.15 p.m., but no headway could be made as the talks remained focussed on the farmers’ demand for the repeal of the Acts. Farmer leaders said the government said it needs to consult internally and thereafter it would come back to the unions. The union leaders will also have their own meeting on Tuesday to decide their next course of action. In Monday’s talks, another key demand of farmers for a legal guarantee to the Minimum Support Price (MSP) procurement system barely came up for

discussion. Kavitha Kur ungati of Mahila Kisan Adhikar Manch, said, “The standoff continued as the government is talking about benefits of the laws and we are asking for the repeal of those laws.” Bharatiya Kisan Union (Rajewal) President Balbir Singh Rajewal said farmers will not agree to anything less than the repeal of three farms laws. “We will discuss only the MSP issue and the repeal of laws. It is the ego problem of the government that is coming in way of resolving issues,” he said. Talking to reporters after the meeting, Tomar said the farmer leaders should flag specific issues in the three laws on which they have problems. He maintained that the talks took place in a cordial atmosphere.

9 more detected with UK Covid strain; total 38 NEW DELHI, JAN 4 (IANS): Nine more Covid patients have been detected carrying the new and highly infectious strain of novel coronavirus from the UK, taking the total number of such cases to 38 in the country, the Union Health Ministry said on Monday. All the nine latest additions have been reported from a single laboratory in the national capital, which accounts for nearly half of the total cases of new mutant coronavirus strain. The Institute of Genomics and Integrative Biology have reported all the new nine cases detected on Monday. The National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) have also reported 8 cases till date. Together, NCDC and IGIB have detected 18 of the total 38 cases.

The DC said Addl SP Kohima and SDO (C) Jakhama went to Khuzama to assess the spread of fire from Dzükou valley, adding that National Disaster Response Force and Manipur police team were seen at the site of the incident coordinating the situation. In Monday’s operation to contain the fire, he said 78 personnel were involved, which included 17 Kohima police personnel, 10 personnel from 4th NAP, five from forest department and 46 from NDRF (including those stationed at base camp). Mentioning that the operation team, except NDRF personnel who are staying back at the base camp, returned to Kohima, Shihab said the operation would resume on Tuesday with the teams departing Viswema Dzükou entry point at 5 a.m. SP Kohima, Manoj Kumar, ADC Lithrongla Tongpi Rutsa, DFO Raj Kumar and others also attended the meeting. Rev. Dr. Zelhou Keyho, General Secretary, Nagaland Baptist Church Council (NBCC) addressing the quasquicentennial celebration.

DIMAPUR: Chozuba Village Baptist Church (CVBC) celebrated its quasquicentennial-125 years of Christianity on December 27 at the newly dedicated church building under the theme, “Great is thy Faithfulness”. A press release by Quasquicentennia Celebration Committee (QCC) chairman, Jolayi Nienü stated that Nagaland Baptist Church Council (NBCC) general secretary Rev. Dr. Zelhou Keyho unveiled the monolith wherein Quasquicentennial Celebration Committee chairman, Purhiyi Demo

presided over the unveiling ceremony. Rev. Dr. Zelhou Keyho asserted that the history of Christianity lay not on one’s achievement but what God had done for us. NE to get 3rd international airport by Mar 2021

Maharaja Bir Bikram Airport

Ag artala, Jan 4 (IANS): After Guwahati and Imphal, Agartala’s Maharaja Bir Bikram (MBB) Airport is set to become the third international airport in the north-eastern region, after a Rs. 438 crore project under construction is completed in March 2021, Airport Authority of India (AAI) officials said on Monday. Construction work on the new integrated terminal building of MBB Airport has been completed and now the interior work is going on. By March 31, all the work would be completed, an AAI official added. “Through the MBB Airport, the state government is keen to begin air connectivity with Bangladesh and other neighbouring countries,” a senior AAI official told IANS K Y M C

preferring anonymity. He said the new terminal has been designed to handle 1,000 domestic and 200 international passengers during peak hours, making it an annual handling capacity of three million passengers. “The new air por t apron has the capacity to park six aircraft at a time. With a built-up area of 30,000 square metre, the new terminal building would be equipped with 20 check-in counters, four passenger boarding bridges, conveyor belts and passenger-friendly modern facilities and amenities. “Advanced intelligent building management systems have been used to optimise the consumption of energy,” the official added. He said locally available bamboo is used widely

in the state for construction whereas tribal art work and crafts are included to promote cultural tourism. The art and craft work is displayed all over the terminal in the form of sculptures, ‘jaali’ work, furniture and murals. The bamboo architecture is represented in the facade of the terminal building by way of a floral ‘jaali’ pattern depicting the forests and greenery of the region, placed equidistant from each other. “Depiction of local motifs in metal cladding would create vibrancy while displaying glimpses of the local art to the passengers,” the AAI official said. The airport, which was built in 1942 by the erstwhile King Bir Bikram Kishore Manikya Bahadur,

is the second busiest in the north-east after Guwahati’s Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport. Imphal Air port in Manipur was declared as an international airport three-and-a-half years ago. The Union Civil Aviation Ministry in 2018 renamed the Agartala airport, earlier known as Singerbhil Airport, after Tripura’s last ruler Bir Bikram Kishore Manikya Bahadur. During World War II, it was used by the fourth Combat Cargo Group of the US Air Forces flying Curtiss C-46 aircraft over Myanmar. It was used as a supply point from which the unit air-dropped supplies and ammunition to the advancing allied forces on the ground. Tripura Transport and Tourism Minister Pranajit Singha Roy said after the completion of the airport project flights between Agartala and Dhaka as well as other Bangladesh cities such as Chittagong and Sylhet, could be operated. “The state government had provided 72 acres of land to the AAI for construction of the new terminal building, runway and other necessary infrastructure.” The airport is located 20 km north of the capital city Agartala and sits just along the India-Bangladesh border.

Bird flu outbreak reported in 4 states Bird flu confirmed in dead migratory birds in Himachal SHIMLA/THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, JAN 4 (PTI): Himachal Pradesh on Monday became the fourth state to report cases of bird flu after Rajasthan, Kerala and Madhya Pradesh, with officials confirming that migratory birds found dead at Pong Dam Lake in Kangra district have tested positive for the dreaded avian influenza. In Rajasthan, deaths of more than 170 new birds were reported from some districts on Monday, taking the total fatalities in recent days to over 425. “Bird flu has been confirmed only in Jhalawar (district). Report of other deaths is yet to come,” according to the state animal husbandry department. As some parts of Kerala too reported the influenza outbreak, authorities have ordered culling of ducks, hens and other domestic birds within one km radius of the affected areas in Kottayam and Alappuzha districts. Officials said some 40,000 birds will have to be culled to check the spread of the H5N8 virus.

A farm in Kerala’s Kottayam has recently seen deaths of around 1,500 ducks due to bird flu recently. Bird flu is a highly infectious and severe respiratory disease in birds caused by the H5N1 influenza virus, which can occasionally infect humans as well. In Himachal Pradesh, around 1,800 migratory birds, most of them barheaded geese, have been found dead in the Pong Dam Lake sanctuary. Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (Wildlife) Archana Sharma said the laboratory at the Indian Veterinary Research Institute in Bareilly detected avian influenza in the samples of dead birds, while citing the information conveyed by the Centre. At the same time, she said that her department was awaiting confirmation by the National Institute of High Security Animal Diseases (NIHSAD), Bhopal, as it was the nodal body for testing this disease. Northern Regional Disease Diagnostic Laboratory in Jalandhar has also suspected avian influenza in the bird samples, she added. Kangra District Magistrate Rakesh Prajapati has prohibited slaughtering,

sale, purchase and export of any poultry, birds, fish of any breed and their related products, including eggs, meat, chicken, etc, in Fatehpur, Dehra, Jawali and Indora subdivisions of the district. Exercising his powers under Sections 34 of the Disaster Management Act, 2005, the official said that shops selling these products would also remain closed in these four subdivisions. Prajapati also banned the movement of locals and tourists within a kilometre radius of Pong Dam. In Himachal’s Pong Dam Lake wildlife sanctuary, wildlife staff first reported the sudden death of four bar-headed geese and one common teal in the Fatehpur area last Monday. The next day, over four hundred migratory waterfowl were found dead in Majhar, Bathari, Sihal, Jagnoli, Chatta, Dhameta and Kuthera areas in the wildlife ranges of Dhameta and Nagrota. Subsequently, hundreds of more birds were found dead each day, totalling 1,773 till Sunday, she said. She said that more than 90 per cent of the dead birds were bar-headed geese, the most common migratory species at the lake who ar-

rive here from Central Asia, Russia, Mongolia and other regions in winters after crossing the Himalayan ranges. There are eight-nine other bird species whose members have been found dead. Last year, more than one lakh migratory birds had camped at the lake by late January and this year, over 50,000 have arrived so far. The dead birds are being disposed off as per birdflu protocol, officials said, adding that no such deaths have been reported so far from other water bodies in the state. Wildlife, veterinary and animal husbandry staff across the state have been put on alert and asked to immediately report the death of any bird or animal. The Gopalpur zoo in Kangra which is situated near the Pong Lake has been put on high alert. Recently, a bird flu alert has been sounded in Rajasthan after crows were found dead in half a dozen districts. Bird flu cases were also confirmed in dead crows in Indore in Madhya Pradesh. Bird flu virus was detected in around 50 crows whose carcasses were found in Indore in Madhya Pradesh last week, prompting authorities to issue an alert.

UPSC recommends 89 more candidates for civil services NEW DELHI, JAN 4 (PTI): The UPSC has recommended 89 candidates for different civil services from its reserve list drawn on the basis of the 2019 civil services examination, according to an official statement issued on Monday. The result of the 2019 civil services examination was declared on August 4 in 2020, recommending 829 candidates in order of merit for appointment to IAS, IFS, IPS and other Group ‘A’ and Group ‘B’ central services against 927 vacancies. The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC), in accordance with rules, also maintained a consolidated reserve list in order of merit below the last recommended candidate under the respective categories, said the statement issued by the Personnel Ministry. As sought by the Department of Personnel & Training, the commission has now recommended 89 candidates -- 73 General, 14 OBC, 1 EWS and 1 SC -- to fill up the remaining posts based on the 2019 civil services examination, it said. The list of the 89 candidates is also available on the UPSC website -- http// www.upsc.gov.in.

3 arrested over Ghaziabad crematorium incident GHAZIABAD, JAN 4 (PTI): Three civic officials were arrested on Monday over the collapse of a crematorium roof that claimed 24 lives here as tension spiralled in the area with the families of the victims blocking the Delhi-Meerut highway by placing two bodies on the road to press for their demand for higher compensation. They lifted the blockade and agreed to cremate the bodies after hours of protest as officials agreed for Rs 10 lakh compensation and a government job for each victim’s family, Superintendent of Police (Rural) Iraj Raja said. He said that Muradnagar Nagar Palika Executive Officer Niharika Singh, Junior Engineer Chandra Pal and Supervisor Ashish were arrested this morning as they were involved in

the tendering process for building the structure that collapsed Sunday, killing 24 people and injuring 17 others. Police teams are also conducting raids at possible hideouts of contractor Ajay Tyagi to arrest him, Raja said. Officials said construction work for the shelter at the crematorium, estimated to cost around Rs 55 crore, was started two months ago and it was opened for public nearly 15 days ago. The road blockade near the Muradnagar Police Station had led to a massive traffic jam with hundreds of vehicles getting piled up during the morning rush hour. The protesters were insisting District Magistrate Ajay Shankar Pandey be called for a talk with them so that they can register their demands including Rs 20 lakh compensation for each of the grieving families and a government job for one of their members.

Th DM, Senior Superintendent of Police Kalanidhi Naithani and other senior officials later reached the protest site and spoke to them over their demands, officials said. Urban Development Minister and Ghaziabad district in-charge Suresh Khanna also visited here and met the family members of the victims, the DM told PTI. He said a proposal on Rs 10 lakh compensation and a government job in each family has been forwarded to the government and the administration would also arrange free education for the children of the deceased till they become adults. On the funerals of the 24 bodies, he said 11 were cremated at the Ukhlarsi village cremation ground and the rest at their native places. Their family members have taken away the bodies, he said. Officials also said the government has agreed to

provide relief to the injured after assessing their level of handicap. Twenty-four people, most of them attending a funeral, were killed and 17 others injured when the roof of a shelter at a cremation ground in Muradnagar here collapsed on Sunday. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath had Sunday announced Rs 2 lakh as financial relief for the families of each man killed. M e a n w h i l e, U t t a r Pradesh Congress chief Ajay Kumar Lallu lashed out at the Yogi Adityanath government over the incident, saying it was a “living example of organised corruption” in the state. In a statement issued here, he said the roof collapse showed “sub-standard material” was being used in construction works, and alleged government officials and contractors were putting the lives of people in danger for earning themselves “commission”.

Delhi riots: Court grants bail to three NEW DELHI, JAN 4 (PTI): A court here on Monday granted bail to three persons in a north east Delhi riots case, saying the investigation carried out was “perfunctory” and the charge sheet was filed in a “lackadaisical manner”. Additional Sessions Judge Amitabh Rawat granted the relief to Osama, Aatir and Gulfam on furnishing a bail bond of Rs 10,000 with one surety of like amount each in the case related to the looting and burning of a fruits godown during the rioting in Jafrabad area on February 25 last year. The court said the list of witnesses filed with the reply of the police to the bail pleas mentioned some witnesses but no such statements had been filed with the charge sheet in May last year. It noted the reply to the bail pleas mentioned that the statements of two alleged eye witnesses have been recorded by the police, which would be filed with the supplementary charge sheet. The court directed the three accused persons not to tamper with evidence or leave Delhi without its permission. It said that as per the charge sheet, they were arrested in April after they allegedly disclosed their roles in the case when they were arrested in another case related to the riots.

I-T dept questions Robert Vadra in benami assets case probe NEW DELHI, JAN 4 (PTI): The Income Tax department on Monday questioned Robert Vadra, son-inlaw of Congress President Sonia Gandhi, in connection with its probe against him under the benami assets law, official sources said. Vadra, 52, said the action was aimed to “digress” from the “real issues” concerning the country like the farmers’ agitation. Sources said Vadra was asked to join the investigation at the tax authority’s office in the national capital but as he cited COVID-19 restrictions, a team of officials visited his official premises in Delhi’s Sukhdev Vihar area. He was questioned for about eight hours and his statement was recorded as part of the proceedings related to the Prohibition of Benami Property Transactions Act, they said. Sources added that the questioning was linked to the purchase of some land parcels by a firm linked to Vadra in Rajasthan’s border town of Bikaner in which another central probe agency, the Enforcement Directorate, had filed a money laundering case in 2015. The ED has questioned Vadra in this case in the past

Robert Vadra

and had attached assets worth Rs 4.62 crore of his firm Ms Sky Light Hospitality (P) Ltd (now LLP) in 2019. Sources said the ED shared case documents of this probe along with that of possession of some alleged undisclosed assets abroad with the tax department for action under the anti-benami law that is enforced in the country by the latter. “Everyone knows it is (political vendetta). Whenever Priyanka (his wife Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra) moves out for helping farmers...and other issues then whom will they (probe agencies) come to?” Vadra said to reporters after the tax department team left. “They will come to Robert Vadra. I don’t want to go into political issues but they (government) are digressing from real issues...

like the farmers issue,” he said. Vadra said he had “nothing to hide and worry about” and that the truth will prevail. “Whatever questions or notices they have sent, we have answered those. They (probe agencies) are most welcome and I am ready to answer,” he said. When reporters asked him if the latest questioning pertains to proceedings under the anti-benami law, he said “it was general and nothing related to that (benami).” Vadra also told reporters that the latest queries of tax officials revolved around his activities over the last 5-7 years. The I-T department has also been probing Vadra on charges of alleged possession of some undisclosed assets in the UK. The ED too is investigating these charges, under the anti-money laundering law, against the businessman. The ED has accused Vadra of money laundering in the purchase of a London-based property at 12, Bryanston Square worth 1.9 million GBP (British pounds), which is allegedly owned by him and this transaction involves the role of absconding defence consultant Sanjay Bhandari.

Fight against COVID-19

A

s the world awaits an effective vaccine against COVID-19, reports that a mutant strain of the COVID-19 (SARS-CoV-2) virus has appeared in several countries, has come as a bombshell. Cases have been identified in more than 30 countries including the U.S., Australia, Canada, Germany, Italy, Japan, Lebanon, the Netherlands, Singapore and South Korea. The UK has stopped all flights to and from the country but passengers infected with the new strain have been reported in many countries including India. The mutated virus is said to transmit 56% to 70% faster than SARS-CoV-2. Virologists and epidemiologists are concerned that the mutated virus strain could spike up infections across the world. Dubbed the “B.1.1.7 lineage,” the strain discovered in the UK has acquired 17 mutations compared to its most recent ancestor- a faster rate of change than scientists typically observe. Some of those are in key areas involved in the virus’s ability to infect cells. Researchers have found no evidence that the mutation causes more severe illness. A report by Imperial College London researchers released on December 31,2020 found “a small but statistically significant” indication that this particular mutation affects younger people - those under 20 - more than other variants do, though the reason could be circumstantial. A team of scientists concluded in an analysis released by the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine that, without new control measures in the U.K., the increase in transmissibility would likely lead to more hospitalizations and deaths in 2021 than in 2020. Viruses constantly change through mutations that arise naturally as they replicate and circulate in their hosts. As a result of this ongoing process, many thousands of mutations and distinct lineages have already arisen in the SARS-CoV-2 genome since the virus emerged in late 2019. Earlier, another variant was reported in South Africa, known as 501.V2, has driven a surge in infections there, according to country health officials. That strain has also turned up elsewhere, including in the U.K. and Finland. As more mutations occur, vaccines may need to be altered. This happens on an annual basis with seasonal flu, which evolves quickly. An analysis of 641 Covid-19 cases in the U.K. found those with the variant had 10-to-100 times higher concentrations of the coronavirus in their noses compared with infections caused by ‘regular’ SARS-CoV-2, which may explain the higher transmissibility. Just as natural selection has shaped the evolution of humans, plants, and all living things on the planet, natural selection shapes viruses, too. Though viruses aren’t technically living - they need a host organism in order to reproduce- they are subject to evolutionary pressures. Mutation occurs when an error is incorporated in the viral genome. Recombination occurs when coinfecting viruses exchange genetic information, creating a novel virus. Mutations can produce viruses with new antigenic determinants. The appearance of an antigenically novel virus through mutation is called antigenic drift. Antigenically altered viruses may be able to cause disease in previously resistant or immune hosts. Recombination involves the exchange of genetic material between two related viruses during coinfection of a host cell. It is clear that even before an efficacious vaccine could be administered to billions, the COVID-19 has already taken a step to stay ahead in the battle between humans and viruses.

DailyDevotion Why Can I Not Follow You Now? Peter said to Him, “Lord, why can I not follow You now?” —John 13:37 There are times when you can’t understand why you cannot do what you want to do. When God brings a time of waiting, and appears to be unresponsive, don’t fill it with busyness, just wait. The time of waiting may come to teach you the meaning of sanctification— to be set apart from sin and made holy— or it may come after the process of sanctification has begun to teach you what service means. Never run before God gives you His direction. If you have the slightest doubt, then He is not guiding. Whenever there is doubt— wait. At first you may see clearly what God’s will is— the severance of a friendship, the breaking off of a business relationship, or something else you feel is distinctly God’s will for you to do. But never act on the impulse of that feeling. If you do, you will cause difficult situations to arise which will take years to untangle. Wait for God’s timing and He will do it without any heartache or disappointment. When it is a question of the providential will of God, wait for God to move. Peter did not wait for God. He predicted in his own mind where the test would come, and it came where he did not expect it. “I will lay down my life for Your sake.” Peter’s statement was honest but ignorant. “Jesus answered him, ‘…the rooster shall not crow till you have denied Me three times’ ” (John 13:38). This was said with a deeper knowledge of Peter than Peter had of himself. He could not follow Jesus because he did not know himself or his own capabilities well enough. Natural devotion may be enough to attract us to Jesus, to make us feel His irresistible charm, but it will never make us disciples. Natural devotion will deny Jesus, always falling short of what it means to truly follow Him.

Farmers need guarantee, not chicanery

fter the conclusion of 7th round of talks in Delhi’s VigyanBhavan, the deadlock continued between the protesting farm unions and the government on the two main contentious issues of outright repeal of three farm laws and a legal guarantee for Minimum Support Price (MSP), though an agreement has reached on two other farm concerns relating to rise in power tariff and penalties for stubble burning. The next round of talks will take place on January 4 for which government looks to be adopting a more lenient view, though instant repeal of the farm laws seems a distant possibility. The ongoing farm agitation, which has snowballed into a ‘do or die’ situation for farmers in the last over one month, had started on a simple protest note in Punjab and Haryana. However, gross mishandling of an organised and peaceful protest of farmers by Haryana government, when farmers were brutally cane charged, sufficiently added to aggravation of the situation. Had the state government listened to their grievances, at the outset, to convey the same to their political bosses at the Centre, the agitation would not have turned so grim and obstinate as it has turned out today. Haryana chief minister ML Khattar, a former RSS Pracharakand a political naïve to handle such situations, tried to show police power on the agitating farmers of Punjab and Haryana when they tried to march their way to Delhi to register their protest before the highest echelons of the power. In a most immature and novice way, he ordered digging up roads and erecting sand blockades on several places at National Highway No. 44 to impede their way. However, vehicular traffic came to a virtual halt on the National Highway from Ambala to Delhi, causing immense hardships to the commuters for many days

braham Lincoln long ago said that “You can fool some of the people all of the time, and all of the people some of the time, but you cannot fool all of the people all of the time.” What made him to say? He might have seen there were politicians and bureaucrats who tended to think that all the people can be fooled all the time. His quote is more relevant now. We live in a world of blatant lies, fake news and false narratives; masses tend to believe whatever the politicians and bureaucrats say. Even the media except a few do fall in the same category. By the time we crosscheck what they said, they swiftly move on to other issues by totally side-lining. Nowadays politicians and public by and large go by populistic rhetoric. Tall claims and promises that dominate the narratives. Those who govern us take the people to unbelievable heights, but in reality, nothing seems to be happening. There are two India—one for the rich and the other for the poor. The super-rich and the powerful have absolute control over people and natural resources that determines productiondistribution and consumption. India is facing huge problems to admit corona virus cases due to lack of beds which is not surprising at all, while considering the fact that there are only 12 countries which figures worse than Indian when it comes to bed availability.

together with no fault of theirs. The mindless misadventure proved highly counter-productive as the undeterred farmers took all impediments for a toss to reach their destination, but their anger towards the government also grew more. When the state government utterly failed to control thousands of determined farmers from Punjab, joined by their counterparts of Haryana, marching towards Delhi, the government agencies began to claim that there was no one from Haryana joining the agitation—perhaps to appease the Modi dispensation— prompting thousands of farmers from Rohtak, Jhajjar, Panipat, Kurukshetra and elsewhere coming live on social networking sites to register their presence and belie the government claims. They not only joined the agitation but also contributed considerably for supply of milk, vegetable and other edible items for their Punjab brethren. The state government—in coalition with perhaps the biggest farmer leader of Haryana Devi Lal’s great grandson DushyantChautala of the new-found Jannayak Janata Party (JJP)—wanted to convey a false message to BJP high command that the stir was only from Congressruled Punjab and no one was involved from BJPruled Haryana. When the lies exposed, the Khattar dispensation and Haryana BJP launched a misinformation campaign against the innocent agitating farmers, when they termed the stir politicallymotivated. In fact, even before the start of the agitation, the chief minister, his ministers, BJP MPs, MLAs and other leaders, were starting to make absurd statements against the farmers, which made the situation worse instead of being managed. And now the situation has become such that the supporters of agitating farmers have

started opposing the chief minister, ministers and BJP leaders of the state by showing them black flags, laying siege of their houses, banning their entry into the villages, attacking their vehicles with stones and sticks and started digging up to the helipad designed for their journey. Despite such heavy opposition, the government is refusing to face the reality and is engaged in giving provocative statements to further aggravate the situation. With regard to wild allegations of political motivation, thepropaganda is far from the truth, which the government, especially the state government, doesn’t want to understand for its own political compulsions and interests. The government must understand that ‘politically-motivated’ agitations are not run with such vigour and vitality like that of the farmers’, on most genuine grounds, concerning the interests of the entire farming community. Politically-motivated agitations, generally, do not register such selfless sacrifices, as over three dozen agitating farmers have so far laid down their lives for the cause. Moreover, agitating farmers, right from the beginning, are trying to keep the leaders of all political parties away from their movement, which belies the government’s claim that this movement is politically motivated The lateststatement of Haryana chief minister, in which he has termed the farmer agitation as a tamasha(gimmick), is in no way commendable or contributes towards resolving the current impasse. Rather, such thoughtless statements not only reflect the insensitivity and authoritarianism of the government, but also add fuel to the fire.Surprisingly, the chief ministeris still under the impression that the farmers’ movement on the open roads of Delhi borders in this bone-chilling cold for

the past over one month, is ‘politically motivated’ when he says, “We need to identify those who take desperate steps and cross the line in disappointment and frustration after losing power. We nowadays are witnessing a tamasha. They are resorting to pressure tactics by being adamant in not giving up the protest until the government repeals the farm laws. Is this a democracy?” Sensing popularity and public sympathy towards the agitation, a state minister, tried to fire irrelevant salvoby claiming that the agitation was being funded by China and Pakistan while someone said it was being run by ‘khalistanis’, which only earned a bad name for the powers-that-be after a wide-spread criticism of the government on different fora. The saga of absurd and derogatory statements did not end here. A union minister even went to the extent of nicknaming the protesting farmers and their supporters for ‘behaving like paagaljhota’ (insane Pigtail). If this is the level of sanity in ministers, one can understand why the deadlock is continuing and going stronger against the government. In yet another desperate attempt, the BJP unnecessarily raked up Satluj Yamuna Link (SYL) canal issue, which is long pending between the states of Punjab and Haryana in a bid to divide the brotherhood and fraternity being shown by the agitating farmers of both the states to protest farm laws. The MPs, MLAs and other functionaries of the BJP observed a one day ‘fast’ at district headquarters in Haryana, which was strongly resented by the farmers opposing the farm laws, said to be beneficial to big corporate houses including the Ambanis and Adanis. However, it is pertinent to point out that the same BJP government did not raise the issue even once during the last six years of rule in Haryana and during

the last three years of the Apex Court judgement in the matter. In other words, the raking up of SYL issue to divert attention from farmer agitation seems to have boomeranged. A BJP MP and MLA from Haryana created a controversy by eating bellyful in the morning at a public function, and sitting on ‘fast’ after sometime. When a journalist circulated their video of eating food by a BJP MP in Haryana, he was booked in a false case. Interestingly, the Centre, instead of persuading the farmers, is getting engaged in garnering support of some BJP-backed small or non-existent farmer organisations and leaders from Haryana, Uttrakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and other BJP-ruled states to topple the agitation, which did not work at all. Their pictures giving letter of support to Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar were widely publicised in the Governmentowned media and other “pro-Government” media platforms but this exercise did not withered away the public sentiment in favour of the farmers, demanding outright repeal of the three laws. Instead of holding talks with the agitating farmers, the Prime Minister is busy holding governmentmanaged meetings with farmers of his home state of Gujarat and BJP ruled state of Madhya Pradesh to showcase their “support” in favour of the farm laws. However, reports emanating from Kattch are suggesting that the farmers are against these laws. This tactics of the government also did not work as the people are wondering why the Prime Minister is not holding dialogue with the farmers sitting on Singhu, Kondli, Ghazipur, Tikri and other borders surrounding the national capital. Had he himself initiated interaction, there may have been a possible resolution.

The other India: Facts & figures don’t lie

India has just five beds for 10,000 people. Recently released Human Development Report 2020 shows that out of 167 countries, India ranks 156th on bed availability. In comparison, 76 countries have fewer doctors per 10,000 population than India; among these are several countries with vastly better health indices. Thailand and Vietnam have marginally fewer doctors than India, 8.1 and 8.3 doctors per 10,000 respectively as compared to 8.6 doctors per 10,000 population in India. Word Bank data shows that it has about 20 beds per 10,000. Vietnam and Thailand handle the Covid pandemic better than not just India but some of the most developed countries, they also have a higher life expectancy of 75.4 and 77.2 years respectively. India’s life expectancy is 69.7 years. Among the countries with a worse bed to population ratio than India are Uganda, Senegal, Afghanistan, Burkina Faso, Nepal and Guatemala. Bangladesh slightly figures above than India, with 8 beds per 10,000 population, though it has only 5.8 doctors per 10,000 population. And yet, Bangladesh has a higher life expectancy of 72.6. Countries in the “very high human development” category typically have about 25 to 50 doctors per 10,000 and 25-35 beds per 10,000. In the next category of high human development countries, the availability of

beds ranges from 10-45 per 10,000 and the availability of doctors’ ranges from 15 to 40 per 10,000. There are several in this group who a lower doctor population ration than India, but none which have few beds per 10,000. Most of the countries in the medium human development group to which India belongs have fewer doctors per 10,000 population. But only two, Nepal (3) and Guatemala (4), have lower bed availability than India. The number of beds per 10,000 is used as an indicator of health infrastructure in general and the poor bed availability points to India’s failure to expand its health infrastructure in keep with the growth in population. Many do not want to work in remote areas because of poor infrastructure facilities. With such poor health facility, many are wondering how could COVID-19 vaccine be administered to a vast populace spread across? As the Supreme Court of India point out “Right to health includes affordable treatment”. In another facet, India ranked 111th out of 162 countries in the Human Freedom Index 2020 report released by Cato Institute, plummeting 17 spots from its position in the last index. India registered a score of 6.43, which is lower than the average human freedom rating of 6.93 for the 162 countries which were rated by the index. Personal freedom in India was given a score of 6.30 by the report,

while economic freedom was rated 6.56. India ranks above neighbours Pakistan (140), Bangladesh (139) and China (129), but below Bhutan (108), Sri Lanka (94) and Nepal (92). The countries that ranked in the top 10 are New Zealand, Switzerland, Hong Kong, Denmark, Australia, Canada, Ireland, Estonia, and Germany and Sweden (tied up in the 9th place. While Japan, UK and the US ranked 11th and other two countries tied in 17th position respectively. On the other extreme, Syria was ranked the worst followed by Sudan, Venezuela, Yemen and Iran. The index is calculated using 76 “distinct indicators of personal and economic freedom” in areas such as rule of law, security and safety, religion, legal system and property right and access to sound money. Only 15 per cent of the world’s population lives in the top quartile of countries of countries in the HFI, and 34 per cent live in the bottom quartile. The gap in human freedom between the freest and the least free countries has widened since 2008, increasing by 6 per cent when comparing the top and bottom of 10 per cent of nation in HFI. The report added that the lowest levels of freedom are in the Middle East, North Africa, sub-Saharan Africa, and South Asia. Women-specific freedoms are weakest and least protected in the Middle-East, North Africa, Sub-Saharan Africa, and

South Asia. Countries in the top quartile of freedom enjoy relatively higher average per capita income ($50,340) than those in other quartiles. The average per capita income in the least free quartile is $7,720. India’s poverty and hunger have worsened manifesting malnutrition of children. In the year 2020, during the pandemic 27 per cent went to bed without eating. Hunger index show that even the developed states did not show any improvement. Staggering cut in mid-day meals that escalated mal-nutrition of children especially many state governments stopped giving eggs. India’s figures down the line among other countries. India’s hunger is worsening because of chronic inter-generational

The government contention, particularly of Prime Minister NarendraModi, that the opposition (Congress) is trying to scare the ‘anndaata’ with these laws does not seem to cut much ice with the agitating farmers as he has not met them even once or invite them to allay their fears and apprehensions, though trying to gather support in favour of the three farm laws PM’s surprise visit to RakabganjGurudwara to pay obeisance to Sri Guru TegBahadurJi is also being viewed another effort to placate the Sikh community—which largely forms the farmers sitting on the protest—as they remain unmoved by the rhetoric since no serious effort has so far been made to assuage their grievances. Home Minister Amit Shah’s much-hyped photograph taking lunch at the house of a small and indigent farmer at Belijuri village of Midnapore in West Bengal, is another example of Government playing political gimmicks showing its‘sensitivity’ and ‘welfare’ of the farming community. However, none of these efforts have contributed towards ending the farm impasse. In nutshell, the agitating farmers need permanent repeal of the three controversial farm laws, which they fear those will herald en era of contract farming and grabbing of their farming land by the big corporates, and not chicanery against them as the state government and the Centre feel that this misinformation campaign will deter the spirits of the farmers, which is a make-believe. The Centre will have to devise some pragmatic and convincing ways and means to find a consensus on the issue other than launching a flimsy, planted and false propaganda campaign to defame the protesting farmers as a cover-up effort. Vinod Sharma

poverty. Nutritional value of food is falling at appalling levels. If we take other facets, the real India manifests more or less similar projections. India’s human development and other indices are not encouraging. Millions of Indians live in such miserable state and pulling on their lives without any joy and future prospect. When we use rhetoric such as building new India and so on, first and the foremost we need to set right the “Other India”, then only New India will become a reality. A country that shows lowest indices on all fronts fails miserably on all counts and India is certainly one among them. Dr. John Mohan Razu

Sir,

Irregular networks

The network in certain areas of Dimapur seems to be deteriorating from day to day. With Dimapur being the commercial center of Nagaland, everyone expects the district to have the best of facilities. However, the network connectivity issue has been a long withstanding problem faced by the state as a whole till this date. Not forgetting the network issues faced by the other districts as well, I would like to question what the telecom services have been doing. Online workers and students are facing a huge problem due to the irregular internet. Also, proper communications seem impossible to achieve too. Therefore, I would like to appeal to these service providers to look into these matters as early as possible. Mhayani Murry, Dimapur.

PM dedicates Nat Atomic Timescale to country Central Vista Project: SC verdict today

NEW DELHI, JAN 4 (IANS): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday dedicated the National Atomic Timescale and Bhartiya Nirdeshak Dravya Pranali to the nation and laid the foundation stone of National Environmental Standards Laboratory through a video conference. The National Atomic Timescale generates Indian Standard Time with an accuracy of 2.8 nanoseconds. Expressing happiness over CSIR-NPL National Atomic Timescale which he dedicated to humanity, the Prime Minister said that India has become self-reliant in measuring the time within the range of a nano second. “Achieving the accuracy level of 2.8 nano second is a huge capability in itself. Now Indian Standard Time is matching the International Standard Time with the accuracy range of less than 3 nano second. This will be a big help for an organisation like ISRO that is working with cutting-edge technology,” Modi said. ilar sectors will be benefited greatly from this achievement. The Prime Minister also dwelled on the role of the timescale in strengthening India’s role in Industry 4.0. “India is moving towards a leading position in the field of environment. Still, for technology and tools for measuring air quality and emission, India is dependent on others. This achievement will lead to self-reliance in the field and will lead to creation of more effective and cheaper tools for pollution control. This will also enhance India’s share in the global market for technologies related to air quality and emission technology.”

The Prime Minister also delivered the inaugural address at the National Metrology Conclave 2021, which was organised by Council of Scientific and Industrial Research-National Physical Laboratory (CSIRNPL), New Delhi, on its 75th year of inception. The theme of the conclave is ‘Metrology for the Inclusive Growth of the Nation’. Union Minister Harsh Vardhan and Principal Scientific Advisor K VijayRaghavan were present on the occasion. Speaking on the occasion, the Prime Minister lauded Indian scientists for successfully developing two Indian Covid vaccines in this new year, saying

“India’s Covid vaccination programme is the largest in the world and is about to be started”. He lauded the scientific institutions in the country including CSIR for coming together to find solutions for every challenge faced by the country. The Prime Minister urged CSIR to interact with students to raise awareness about the efforts of the institute and said this would motivate them to become scientists in future. He urged the institute to come forward and play an important role in keeping with the new benchmarks to proceed towards forging a self-reliant India. The Prime Minister remarked that as India’s timekeeper CSIR-NPL also has the responsibility to change the future of the country. Noting that India was dependent on foreign standards for quality and measurement over the decades, Modi said now India’s pace, progress, rise, image, and strength will be decided by our own standards. Modi said metrology is like a mirror showing us our standing in the world, the scope for improvement. He said the goal to achieve a

self reliant India consists of quantity as well as quality and urged to win the hearts of every customer who purchases Indian products, instead of just filling the world with Indian products. The Prime Minister also stressed to ensure that Made in India products not only meet global demand but also get global acceptance. He said the Bhartiya Nirdeshak Dravya, dedicated to the nation on Monday, would help the industry to make quality products in sectors like heavy metals, pesticides, pharma and textiles by drafting a ‘Certified Reference Material System’. The Prime Minister added now the industry is moving towards a consumer-oriented approach instead of a regulation-centric approach. He said with these new standards, there is a campaign to bring global identity to local products in districts across the country, which will be of particular benefit to our MSMEs sector. Modi said complying with global standards will help large foreign manufacturing companies coming to India to find a local supply chain.

NEW DELHI, JAN 4 (PTI): The Supreme Court is scheduled to pronounce its verdict Tuesday on a batch of pleas, which have questioned several aspects including the environmental clearance granted to ambitious Central vista project. The Central Vista revamp, announced in September, 2019 envisages a new triangular Parliament building, with seating capacity for 900 to 1,200 MPs, that is to be constructed by August, 2022 when the country will be celebrating its 75th Independence Day. The common Central Secretariat is likely to be built by 2024 under the project against which various pleas have been filed. A bench of Justices AM Khanwilkar, Dinesh Maheshwari and Sanjiv Khanna will pronounce the verdict on the batch of pleas on which it had reserved its verdict on November 5, last year. On December 7, last year the top court had allowed the Centre to proceed with the foundation stone-laying ceremony for the Central Vista project on December 10 after the government assured it that no construction or demolition work would commence till

the apex court decides the pending pleas on the issue. Centre had told the bench that there would be only foundation stone-laying ceremony, and no construction, demolition or felling of trees would be done for the project as of now. Prime Minister Narendra Modi had laid the foundation stone on December 10, last year, for the new Parliament building and the construction is expected to be completed by 2022 at an estimated cost of Rs 971 crore, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla had said on December 5, last year. The apex court had earlier said that any change at the ground level made by authorities for the Central Vista project will be “at their own risk”. It had made it clear that the fate of the project, which includes several new government buildings and a new Parliament House, will depend on its decision. On November 5, the apex court had reserved its verdict on a batch of pleas which have raised questions over the Centre’s ambitious Central Vista project, which covers three km stretch from Rashtrapati Bhavan to India Gate in Lutyens’ Delhi. The Centre had earlier

argued in the top court that the project would “save money” which is paid as rent for housing central government ministries in the national capital. It had submitted that the decision to have a new Parliament building has not been taken in haste and no law or norms have been violated in any manner for the project. The Centre had also said there was no arbitrariness or favouritism in selecting consultant for the project and the argument that the government could have adopted a better process cannot be a ground to scrap the project. Gujarat-based architecture firm HCP Designs has won the consultancy bid for the project to redevelop the Central Vista. The top court is hearing several pleas on the issue, including the one filed by activist Rajeev Suri, against various permissions given to the project by authorities including the nod to change of land use. The pleas have also challenged the grant of a no-objection certificate by the Central Vista Committee (CVC) and also the environmental clearances for the construction of a new parliament house building.

Localised herd immunity, young population behind dip in India’s COVID count? has become immune to an infection. “Nothing has changed drastically in testing or behaviour since mid-September. So relatively speaking, it’s a downward trajectory,” Jameel told PTI. The country’s average, he said, hides many localised spikes and that would continue. While the actual numbers may well be underestimated, the trend of lower numbers appears to be real and the rate of spread of the infection is likely to have reduced, said immunologist Satyajit Rath. “A possible explanation for this may be that crowded urban localities and neighbourhoods where spread was very rapid earlier might be largely saturated, a form of hyperlocal ‘herd immunity’,” Rath, from New Delhi’s National Institute of Immunology (NII), told PTI. The lack of more travel

and the distancing measures -- however poorly implemented -- may be keeping rates of spread somewhat lower in other less crowded neighbourhoods, he said. Given the large number of infections in the first wave, it is certainly conceivable that some population immunity has set in and it is difficult for the virus to transmit as easily as it had in the first round, said epidemiologist and economist Ramanan Laxminarayan. For that reason, it is doubtful India will have a second wave as big as the first one, he explained. “India has been protected by its relatively young population -- 65 per cent of the country is under the age of 35 and infections in those age groups have likely

slowed down overall transmission,” Laxminarayan, founder and director of the Center for Disease Dynamics, Economics & Policy in Washington, told PTI. Jameel added that while it is unclear what per cent infection or exposure is needed for herd immunity for COVID-19, most epidemiologists believe it would be 60 per cent or above. “If that be the case,

we may be closer to it in some but not all locations,” Jameel said. He noted that it is hard to say if the first wave is ending and if there will be a second wave. “That depends on how many people have been infected. Considering that we went through two important periods without any significant upturn – Dussehra to Diwali festive season and

Bihar elections – I think that there would be enough infected people and we will not see a second wave,” said the virologist. Referring to the second ICMR survey which showed an average 6.6 per cent positivity across 70 districts three months ago, Jameel said it translates to 90 to 100 million infected people. “Other surveys, e.g. urban centres, data from

diagnostic company Thyrocare etc. put the number much higher -- 300 to 400 million,” he said. Positivity is the percentage of all coronavirus tests performed that are actually positive. Outbreak modelling for India, said Jameel, suggests about 30 per cent overall infection, with 50 per cent in large and densely populated cities.

ahead. “It’s not the absolute numbers, but the trajectory that is important,” said Shahid Jameel, director, Trivedi School of Biosciences, Ashoka University, looking at India’s COVID graph. Noting that it is impossible and impractical to have true numbers during a pandemic, or even after that, unless everyone is tested, the virologist said COVID-19 cases in the country have gone down steadily since the peak in mid-September. Reflecting the national trend, Delhi’s graph has also been on a downward slide with 384 fresh COVID-19 cases recorded on Monday, the lowest in over seven months, raising hopes that herd immunity may have set in. Herd immunity is a form of indirect protection from infectious disease that sets in when a sufficient percentage of a population

DP-47

NEW DELHI, JAN 4 (PTI): The absolute number of people infected with COVID-19 in India may never be known but much of the scientific community agrees the downward trajectory of the disease is real and can likely be attributed to ‘localised’ herd immunity and a younger population. As scientists attempt to understand India’s sliding COVID count, the country on Monday recorded 16,504 new COVID-19 cases, more than six times lower than the highest daily spike of 97,894 on September 16. While there is a glimmer of hope and India’s COVID-19 numbers are on a definite decline for a combination of reasons, a vaccination programme continues to be important, particularly given the presence of a mutant, more transmissible strain, several experts said while cautioning against infection upticks

NEW DELHI, JAN 4 (IANS): Call it a double whammy. First, reports surfaced in August last year that China’s Alibaba Group has put on hold plans to invest in Indian companies amid geopolitical tensions between the two nations. Now, the “disappearing” act by Alibaba founder and owner of fintech venture Ant Group, Jack Ma, may have left top-notch Indian digital firms flummoxed. According to US-based PitchBook that delivers data on private capital markets, Alibaba and its affiliates Alibaba Capital Partners and Ant Group (earlier known

as Ant Financial) invested more than $2 billion in Indian companies since 2015. Overall, in the last five years, Chinese investors (including Tencent) have poured in over $5.7 billion into the Indian start-up ecosystem, according to data from Venture Intelligence.

Associate Director at IHS Markit. There was marked improvement in business conditions across the sector. “It’’s important to emphasise the broad-based nature of the recovery, with marked

ing the latest fall in payroll numbers. However, the pace of contraction was moderate and the weakest in the current downturn period,” the survey noted. On the prices front, the survey noted that input cost inflation accelerated to a 26-month high in December, with panellists noting increased prices for chemicals, metals, plastics and textiles. Output charges were lifted in response to rising cost burdens, but here the rate of inflation was only marginal. Lima further noted that “...when we combine the latest three months we see that the performance of the manufacturing industry for the third quarter of fiscal year 2020/21 was notably better than in the second quarter.”

As a result, new export orders increased at the slowest pace in the current four-month sequence of expansion. Output growth also eased to a four-month low, but remained strong, it said. Employment, on the other hand, decreased again in December, thereby stretching the current sequence of job shedding to nine months. “Companies stated that government guidelines to have employees working only on shifts and difficulties in finding suitable staff were the key factors caus-

Donald Trump

Congress is due to formally approve the election result on January 6 and Mr Biden, a Democrat, is due to be inaugurated as president on January 20. All 10 living former US defence secretaries have urged President Trump not to question the election results in an opinion piece for the Washington Post. The group also said he should not involve the military in voting disputes, an idea that’s been mooted by some of Mr Trump’s supporters. In excerpts of Saturday’s phone call released by the Washington Post, Mr Trump can be heard alternately cajoling and pres-

surising Georgia’s secretary of state. He insisted that he had won the election in Georgia and told Mr Raffensperger that there was “nothing wrong with saying you have recalculated”. Mr Raffensperger responded by saying: “The challenge you have, Mr President, is that the data you have is wrong.” Later in the call, Mr Trump said the rumour was that ballots had been shredded and voting machinery had been removed from Fulton County in the state - claims denied by Mr Raffensperger’s lawyer. The president then threatened the official with possible legal consequences. “You know what they did and you’re not reporting it. That’s a criminal offence. You can’t let that happen. That’s a big risk to you and to Ryan, your lawyer,” Mr Trump said. He then called for the extra 11,780 votes - which would have given him a total of 2,473,634 votes in the state, one more than Mr Biden, who received 2,473,633 votes.

Athens, Jan 4 (AP): The center-right government in Greece named the country’s first openly gay minister in a cabinet reshuffle on Monday. Nicholas Yatromanolakis, 44, was named as the new deputy minister of culture after being promoted from the position of general secretary at the ministry. The gover nment retained its ministers of health and finance and most other key positions in the reshuffle. Greece is reeling from the impact of the pandemic that caused a spike in deaths in the fall and is expected to have caused a 10.5 per cent contraction of its gross domestic product in 2020. Despite the difficulties, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis left most key cabinet positions unchanged, retaining Christos Staikouras as finance minister and Vasilis Kilikias as health minister. Vaccinations were expanded from nine to 50 hospitals nationwide Monday.

100 dead in attacks on two western Niger villages Niamey (Niger), Jan 4 (AFP): “Terrorists” killed around 100 people in two villages in western Niger, the latest in a string of civilian massacres that have rocked the jihadist-plagued Tillaberi region, a local mayor said Sunday. The attacks on the villages of Tchoma Bangou and Zaroumadareye occurred Saturday just as firstround presidential results were announced. They were waged by “terrorists who came riding about 100 motorcycles,” said Almou Hassane, the mayor of the Tondikiwindi commune that administers both villages. “There were up to 70 dead in Tchoma Bangou and 30 dead in Zaroumadareye,” he told AFP, adding he had just returned from the scene of the attacks. The two villages are 120 kilometres (75 miles) north of the capital Niamey. “There have also been

75 wounded, some of whom have been evacuated to Niamey and to Ouallam for treatment,” Hassane said. The attackers split into two columns to carry out simultaneous attacks on the two villages, which lie seven kilometres (four miles) apart, the mayor added.

Scott, who wrote the novels “Waverley”, “Rob Roy” and “Ivanhoe” and is considered as one of Scotland’s most famous figures, will be celebrated with a 2 pound coin.

Meanwhile, Wells, who wrote “The Time Machine” and “The War Of The Worlds”, will be commemorated also on a 2 pound coin, with a depiction of images from the two novels. Meanwhile, the 75th death anniversary of inventor John Logie Baird, famous for his early prototypes of the television, will be commemorated on another new 50 pound coin.

Iran starts 20% uranium enrichment

Iran says it suspended its nuclear commitments in response to reinstated US sanctions.

DUBAI, Jan 4 (Agencies): Iran on Monday began enriching uranium up to 20% at an underground facility, a short technical step from weapons-grade levels, as fears mounted that a South Korean-flagged oil tanker had been seized by Tehran. The announcement of enrichment at Fordo came at the same time Western officials said they feared the MT Hankuk Chemi had been seized, ABC reported. It comes amid heightened tensions between Iran and the U.S. in the waning days of President Donald Trump’s term in office, which saw the U.S. leader unilaterally withdraw from Tehran’s nuclear deal with world powers and set off months of escalating incidents between the two countries. Iranian state television quoted spokesman Ali Rabiei as saying that President Hassan Rouhani had given the order for the move at the Fordo facility. Iran’s decision to begin enriching to 20% a

decade ago nearly brought an Israeli strike targeting its nuclear facilities, tensions that only abated with the 2015 atomic deal. A resumption of 20% enrichment could see that brinksmanship return. Tr u m p w i t h d r e w the U.S. unilaterally from Iran’s nuclear deal with world powers in 2018. In the time since, there have been a series of escalating incidents between the two countries. Iran’s decision comes after its parliament passed a bill, later approved by a constitutional watchdog, aimed at hiking enrichment to pressure Europe into providing sanctions relief. It also serves as pressure ahead of the inauguration of President-elect Joe Biden, who has said he is willing to re-enter the nuclear deal. Iran informed the International Atomic Energy Agency last week that it planned to take the step. Meanwhile, satellite data from MarineTraffic. com showed the MT Hankuk Chemi off Bandar Ab-

bas on Monday afternoon without explanation. It had been traveling from Saudi Arabia to Fujairah in the United Arab Emirates. The ship’s owners could not be immediately reached. Iran did not immediately acknowledge the vessel’s travel. The United Kingdom Marine Trade Operations, an information exchange overseen by the British royal navy in the region, acknowledged an “interaction” between a merchant vessel and Iranian authorities. As a result, the UKMTO said the merchant vessel made an “alteration of course” north into Iran’s territorial waters. Cmdr. Rebecca Rebarich, a spokeswoman for the U.S. Navy’s 5th Fleet, said authorities there were aware and monitoring the situation. Ambrey, a British security firm, reported the incident as an apparent seizure.

Pastor killed in Texas church shooting Washington, Jan 4 (IANS): A pastor was killed and two others were injured during a shooting at a church in the US state of Texas, police said, adding the perpetrator was arrested and charged. The incident took place at around 9.20 a.m. on Sunday at the Starrville Methodist Church in Winona, about 360 km north of Houston, Xinhua news agency quoted Larry Christian of the Smith County Sheriff ’s Office as saying to reporters. He said that no services were going on in the church when the 21-yearold old suspect opened fire. Two people were also injured, one from a gunshot wound, and another from falling, CNN quoted Smith County Sheriff Larry Smith as saying. According to a CNN report, the suspect has been identified as Mytrez Deunte Woolen and the victim as 62-year-old Mark Allen McWilliams. The Smith County Sheriff ’s Office said that Woolen has been charged with aggravated assault while exhibiting a deadly weapon, aggravated assault causing serious bodily injury and first-degree capital murder. Taking to Twitter on Sunday night, state Governor Greg Abbott said: “Texas will seek swift justice for the shooter. We thank law enforcement for their response. Keep the harmed in your prayers.”

London, Jan 4 (Agencies): US President Donald Trump has been recorded telling Georgia’s top election official to “find” enough votes to overturn the election result. “I just want to find 11,780 votes,” Mr Trump told Republican Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger in a recording released by the Washington Post. Mr Raffensperger is heard replying that Georgia’s results are correct, BBC reported. Joe Biden won Georgia alongside other swing states, winning 306 electoral college votes to Mr Trump’s 232. Vice-presidentelect Kamala Harris called Mr Trump’s comments “a bold abuse of power”. It comes ahead of two crucial runoff elections in Georgia on Tuesday that will decide which party controls the Senate. Since the November 3 vote, Mr Trump has been making unsubstantiated allegations of widespread electoral fraud. All 50 states have certified the election result, some after recounts and legal appeals.

lexi Laiho, front man for Finnish metal band Children of Bodom and supergroup Bodom After Midnight, has died, his record label has confirmed. He was 41, his management told CNN. “It is with heavy hearts and great sadness that we have to announce the passing of Alexi Laiho,” a statement released by Napalm Records, on behalf of Bodom After Midnight, said. “We are absolutely devastated and heartbroken for the sudden loss of our dear friend and band member,” the statement, signed by bandmates Daniel, Mitja and Waltteri, added.

A statement on Laiho’s official Facebook page said the musician died in his Helsinki home last week, adding that he suffered from long-term health issues during his last years. Laiho was the guitarist and vocalist of metal band Children of Bodom, which was formed in 1993 under the name IneartheD, until the group played their final show in 2019. The band have sold more than 250,000 records in their native Finland, and are one of the country’s bestselling artists, according to their website, with Laiho voted “Best Metal Guitarist” by readers of Guitar World magazine. The guitarist received

several other international prizes for his music, and had been awarded a Metal Hammer Golden Gods prize, according to the management of Bodom After Midnight. In 2015, he led a group of 100 guitar players at Helsinki Festival in 2015 in playing his own composition, “100 Guitars From Hel.” Laiho later formed supergroup Bodom After Midnight. The group recorded three songs and shot a music video, which will be released posthumously, according to a statement on his official Facebook page. In addition to Children of Bodom, the guitarist was also associated with acts Warmen, Sinergy, Kylähullut and The Local Band, the statement, signed by Bodom After Midnight management, said. “Alexi was the most loving and magnificent husband and father,” his wife Kelli Wright-Laiho said in a statement. “Our hearts are eternally broken.” (CNN)

10 crore Indians’ card data selling on Dark Web: Researcher

I

ndependent cyber security researcher Rajshekhar Rajaharia claimed on Sunday that data of nearly 10 crore credit and debit card holders in the country is being sold for an undisclosed amount on the Dark Web. According to Rajaharia, the massive data dump on the Dark Web has been leaked from a compromised server of Bengaluru-based digital payments gateway Juspay. JusPay told IANS that no card numbers or financial information were compromised during the cyber-attack and the actual number is much lower than the 10 crore-figure being reported. “On August 18, 2020, an unauthorised attempt on our servers was detected and terminated when in progress. No card numbers, financial credentials or transaction data were compromised,” a company spokesperson said in

a statement. “Some data records containing nonanonymised, plain-text email and phone numbers were compromised, which form a fraction of the 10 crore data records,” the spokesperson added. However, Rajaharia claimed that the data was being sold on the Dark Web for an undisclosed amount via cryptocurrency Bitcoin. “For this data, hackers are also contacting via Telegram,” he told IANS. According to him, PCI DSS (Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard) have been followed by Juspay in storing users’ card information. “However, if the hackers can find out the Hash algorithm used to generate the card fingerprint, they will be able to decrypt the masked card number. In this condition, all 10 crore cardholders are at risk,” Rajaharia noted. (IANS)

ewer people celebrated New Year’s Eve 2020 on crowded streets. Instead, they turned to technology and connected with friends virtually over voice and video calls. According to a post by the social media platform Facebook, WhatsApp calls saw an increase of more than 50% compared to the same day last year. “More than 1.4 billion voice and video calls were made on New Year’s Eve 2020 globally,” the post states. This is ‘the most ever calls in a single day on WhatsApp’ it added. “Before COVID-19, New Year’s Eve generated Facebook’s biggest spikes in messaging, photo uploads and social sharing at midnight across the world. However, in March 2020, the early days of the pandemic produced traffic spikes that would dwarf New Year’s Eve several times over — and it lasted for months. New Year’s Eve 2020 was the biggest day ever for Messenger group video calls (3+ people) in the US, with nearly 2X more group video calls on NYE compared to the average day. (Gadgets Now)

ctress Tanya Roberts, best known for playing the Bond girl in the 1985 film A View To A Kill, is no more. She was 65. The actress collapsed while walking her dogs on December 24, and was admitted to a hospital here. She died on Sunday, her friend and representative Mike Pingel told The Hollywood Reporter. No cause of death has been given. “I’m devastated. She was brilliant and beautiful and I feel like a light has been taken away. To say she was an angel would be at the top of the list. She was the sweetest person you’d ever meet and had a huge heart. She loved her fans, and I don’t think she realised how much she meant to them,” Pingel told The Hollywood Reporter. Roberts was a model before acting in films and TV shows. She began acting in films in 1975 with the horror flick “Forced Entry” and also featured in films like the 1977 comedy “Racquet” and the 1982 fantasy epic “The Beastmaster”. She was also the lead in the 1984 adventure movie “Sheena: Queen Of The

Jungle”. Roberts’ most notable film role was in the 1985 James Bond film “A View To A Kill”. Hyderabad came out of blocks with aggression. They had a plethora of chances with Joel Chianese in the centre of most of moves. For Chennaiyin, custodian Vishal Kaith was at his best in the first half and denied Hyderabad with

some superb saves. Chianese could not find a way past him in the first half. However, Kaith’’s mistake gave Chianese the opportunity to open scoring in the 50th minute. For Hyderabad, Laxmikant Kattimani was not required to

do much but when called into action, he too was tremendous. Asish Rai even hit the bar for Hyderabad FC but could not find the back of the net. Tuesday’s Match Bengaluru FC Vs Mumbai City 7:30 pm

Shillong can be developed as a Rijiju inaugurates 1st sports school in NE High Altitude Training Centre: Rijiju

Correspondent

S h i l l o n g, J a n 4 (NPN): Union Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports, Kiren Rijiju on Monday inaugurated a Khelo India School (Sports school) at Assam Rifles Public School (ARPS) School at Laitkor here, the first ever sports school in the North East. After inaugurating the school, Rijiju said that there was a need to produce talents and medal winners in a systematic way. “It is not the case that India does not have the talent. We have the potential. There are certain other reasons. The mindset, the attitude of the government and more importantly, the attitude of the society. Sports was not providing any career earlier. Except for some sports, we could not create talents,” Rijiju said. He also inaugurated the synthetic football ground at SAI training centre, here in Meghalaya. “We don’t create talents through system. Sports is tradition. I started taking interest in Sports and thanks to our Prime Minister Modiji, I was given the charge so from Day 1, I realised that we should use all forces to make Sports a

tradition,” the Union Minister added. The ARPS school has been restructered as residential sports school under the Khelo India which is a national programme for the development of sports. A memorandum was signed between the Sports Authority of India (SAI) and ARPS for setting up the sports school. Pointing out that the country lacks sports culture, the Union Minister said that playing was always treated secondary and therefore the mindset of the society and the attitude of the govern-

ment has to change. Lauding initiatives like Khelo India, the Union Minister said it had become a brand now and ARPS Sports is under this and they will scout for talents and nurture them. Dismayed at the poor medal tally of the country in the Olympics, Rijiju said that the agenda of the sports Ministry is clear that by 2028 Los Angeles India has to be among the top ten Olympic medal winning countries and efforts has been put in for achieving the goal. Requesting everyone

to contribute towards making the country a sporting nation, the Minister said that people don’t even watch sports in the country other than cricket and wrestling these days a little. He said that the stadiums are empty and there are not much viewership in TV and internet as well. “No viewers means no sponsor and slow or no growth,” Rijiju pointed out. “Sport is a soft power, a unifier and the country has to understand this to become a great sporting nation,” he added.

Stressing on the need to create sports facilities, the Union Minister said that small countries with populations of just 26 lakh wins in the Olympics. “It is because a young boy or girl stood up for the right thing at the right time. Professional training comes much later. First you have to identify the champion. Sports facility is the main issue. Stadiums come much later. Sports facilities are primary,” Rijiju said. He concluded his address by his assurance to provide top class coaches from the Sports Authority of India and that more funds will be provided for enhancing the facilities to the international standard. Meanwhile, Director General, Assam Rifles, Lt Gen Sukhdeep Sangwan said that it is important to have a institution in the NE as the region is full of talents. “Let’s embrace this sporting culture, the North East has the passion to excel. Everyone should collectively have this passion and mission for winning the Olympic gold,” Lt. Gen. Sangwan said. “It is challenging but one has to dream to reach there,” he said.

S h i l lo n g, Ja n 4 : Union Minister for Sports and Youth Affairs, Kiren Rijiju on Monday said Meghalaya’s State capital Shillong can be developed as a High Altitude Training Centre. “This place is not very high in terms of altitude but sufficient enough to be declared as a high altitude training centre,” Rijiju said after inaugurating sports facilities at SAI, Training Centre, NEHU Campus here. He also inaugurated Synthetic Athletic Track and Field and a Synthetic Football Ground. “This is very appropriate and this can be a permanent location. Normally high altitude training centres are temporary in nature but this location is very appropriate to be a permanent centre as well as certain athletes can come here to train at higher altitude,” the Union Minister said while appreciating the location for the SAI centre. Acknowledging the high potential of the centre, Rijiju said, “We have very few high altitude training centres in India – One in Shilaroo near Shimla, one here in Shillong. We have

some locations in South India in Ooty and towards the Nilgiri Hills Side and I am also planning to have few more maybe in Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, Aizawl cause it also has an altitude”. “The centre is equipped with all modern facilities and there are hostel facility also. Therefore, we can have players from States coming for a few period of time like 1 month, 2 months to make themselves used to the higher altitude training, the Union Minister added. Hinting on the huge potential of sports in Meghalaya and the whole of Northeast, Rijiju said that the country have seen some of the top international level of players from this region. Admitting that lack of proper training, the proper scouting of talent at a young age do not happen, Rijiju said, “This is the reason why the region have not been able to realise the potential.” Stating that his ministry has set a very clear target that by 2028 Olympics, the Union Minister said, “India should be in the Top 10. To achieve that lots of emphasis have to be given for scouting of young talents. The eight

States in Northeast can really contribute 25-30 per cent of the total medalists in the Olympics.” The Union Minister said that with the development of sports, allied industries will also grow and wherever the country progresses more, their progress in Sports also proportionately increases. “The more society progresses, the more you will see activities in sports and adventure,” he added. Stating that Northeast is gifted in terms of sports and Meghalaya is one of the finest locations in India and not only in the Northeast, Rijiju hinted on his efforts to grant more funds from his other Ministry – Ministry of Minority Affairs. He said that he wanted to use funds from the other Ministry also and therefore Sports have been included in the North Eastern Council (NEC) budget. “NEC can also sanction money for the Sports & Adventure. It was not there but I have insisted that it must be there because youth and sports activities are crucial so the NEC must do certain funding for inclusion of sports infrastructure,” he said.

SAI invites Olympians, Para- Ronaldo overtakes Pele as second-highest goalscorer for club Olympians for coaching roles New Delhi, Jan 4 (Agencies): In a move that promises to empower both elite sportspersons and young athletes, the Sports Authority of India (SAI) on Monday invited Olympians and Para-Olympians for filling the position of assistant coach (level 6) and coach (level 10). According to ANI, coaches appointed are allowed to continue their sports training as long as they are active sportsperson and maintain desired performance at the international level. Once appointed, the coaches will take up the diploma in sports coaching conducted by the National Institute of Sports (NIS), Patiala if they have already not taken up the course previously. “ O ly m p i a n s / Pa r a Olympians are given the opportunity to work in SAI as coach. In fact, the medal winners in Olympics and

Para Olympics have (been) directly recruited in Group ‘A’ position in SAI to show the gratitude for their service to the country,” SAI said in an official statement. The time frame to apply for the post is from January 5 (5:00 pm) to January 26 (5:00 pm). Last month, SAI appointed 11 Olympians and three Para Olympians as coaches and assistant coaches.

The appointments were made with an effort to ensure that experienced and elite sportspersons can continue to contribute to the progress of the sport in the country during their tenure as active sportspersons and even after they retire. This will also secure the sportspersons financially while allowing them to continue with their regular training and participation in competitions.

Lo n d o n, Ja n 4 (Agencies): Cristiano Ronaldo overtook Pele as the second-highest goalscorer of all-time with a brace for Juventus in their 4-1 win against Udinese on Sunday. According to Dailymail, the Portuguese forward scored his 757th and 758th goal of his illustrious career with the goals coming in either half as Andrea Pirlo’s side moved up to fifth in the Serie A table. Pele registered 757 goals during his career for Santos, New York Cosmos and Brazil between 1956 and 1977, but now sits third in the all-time list with Ronaldo now one behind Josef Bican’s total of 759. Ronaldo has the opportunity too equal and then eclipse Bican when Juventus visit AC Milan on Wednesday night which will be a crucial match in the Serie A champions’ title defence. Juventus sit ten points behind leaders Milan with a game in hand, though

Lampard under pressure as City sink Chelsea London, Jan 4 (AP): Even facing a Manchester City side depleted by the coronavirus, Frank Lampard couldn’t prevent Chelsea slumping to a fourth loss in its past six games. And Lampard is aware the 3-1 defeat will only increase the pressure on him. Chelsea slipped to eighth place after lkay Gundogan, Phil Foden and Kevin De Bruyne scored in a 16-minute first-half spell at a chilly Stamford Bridge on Sunday. The London club is seven points behind leader Liverpool and three points back of City, which has played two fewer games and now sits in fifth place. E ve n L e i c e s t e r i s mounting a title challenge in third place after beating Newcastle 2-1 in Sunday’s other game. How fickle football can be. Only a month ago, Chelsea’s all-time leading scorer was basking in a 17-match unbeaten that raised talk of a new contract halfway through his second season as manager. “Whether it puts pressure on me or not, it doesn’t matter,” Lampard said. “A month ago everyone was asking me whether I was going to sign a new contract,

Chelsea’s Mason Mount, left, and Manchester City’s Rodrigo challenge for the ball at Stamford Bridge, London, England, Sunday. (AP/PTI)

and now they will be saying different things. “But over a busy period we’ve lost four games of football, so the pressure remains constant and you know it’s there.” Especially when working for Russian billionaire owner Roman Abramovich, who has gone through a dozen managers since transforming the club with his 2003 takeover. After being unable to spend anything in his first season in charge due to a transfer embargo, Lampard benefited from around $250 million in squad reinforce-

ments in the summer transfer window. Despite Timo Werner already enjoying Champions League experience at Leipzig, the $60 million striker is among the players Lampard claims still needs time to settle. “Any build or rebuild takes pain; pain behind the scenes and pain on the pitch occasionally,” Lampard said. “This is a difficult period and I understand the reasons why. Today the first half showed me the reasons why and we have to keep fighting and I’m the first one who has to keep fighting. “I’ll always feel heat:

I felt heat when we were on our good run, because I know that round the corner can be a negative.” Gundogan netted the opener on the turn in the 18th minute after being set up by Foden, who was on target with a flick finish for the second inside three minutes. De Bruyne started the move inside his own half that ended with him scoring, meeting the rebound after Raheem Sterling had hit the goal frame. Chelsea’s consolation came with almost the last kick of the game from Callum Hudson-Odoi.

The Juventus striker hit goals number 757 and 758 in a 4-1 win over Udinese on Sunday night.

three points against Stefano Pioli’s side could haul them back into Scudetto contention. Ronaldo now has 656 club career goals since his first season at Sporting Lisbon back in 2002, with the majority of the goals coming at Real Madrid. The 35-year-old scored 450 goals in 438 appear-

Suga determined to host Olympics amid Covid-19 Tokyo, Jan 4 (IANS): Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga said on Monday that he is determined to host the Tokyo Olympic Games although the Covid-19 pandemic situation is worsening in his country. Suga told a press conference that he will prepare for the Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games with “determination” and take all possible measures against the infection and deliver “hope and courage” to the whole world, reports Xinhua news agency. He also said that his government would consider declaring a state of emergency for Tokyo metropolitan and surrounding areas, which are suffering the most in the past few weeks. The Tokyo Olympics, which were slated to be held in July-August in 2020, had to be postponed to summer of 2021 due to the Covid19 pandemic which has claimed over 18 lakh lives across the world thus far. The official budget for the Tokyo Olympics was increased last month to $15.4 billion, an increase of $2.8 billion because of the delay.

ances while playing in the Spanish capital though Ronaldo also has an esteemed goal tally on the international stage too. The forward has 102 goals in 120 matches for Portugal and that tally is expected to grow as Fernando Santos’ side look to defend their European Championships title this

summer. It means former Manchester United man Ronaldo averages a whopping 42 goals-a-season over his 18-year career for both club and country. Meanwhile, Barcelona captain Lionel Messi is behind Ronaldo in the all-time record for club and country with 742 goals, though the

Argentinian forward has managed this total by playing 200 fewer career games than the Juventus star. Messi also holds the record for the most goals scored for a single club 644 goals - another record previously held by Pele until the Barcelona man broke it last month with a goal against Valladolid. The Argentine has since given a bottle of Budweiser to every single goalkeeper he has scored against, with shot stoppers receiving multiple bottles if they conceded more than one goal. Pele’s former club Santos, however, released a statement that Messi did not break the Brazilian forward’s record last month as he actually scored 1,091 during his 20th-century career. Ro n a l d o ’s b r a c e against Juventus, meanwhile, was his 14th league goal of the season with the 35-year-old currently leading the Italian top-flight’s scoring charts.

Curry scores career-high points as Warriors beat Trailblazers Lo n d o n, Ja n 4 (Agencies): Stephen Curry scored a career-high 62 points as his Golden State Warriors beat the Portland Trailblazers 137122. The 32-year-old is the second oldest player to score over 60 points in a game - Kobe Bryant is the oldest at 37. Curry’s previous best performance was 54 points against the New York Knicks in February 2013. “I wanted to take him out with 30 seconds left so the 42 people here could give him a standing ovation,” said Warriors head coach Steve Kerr. NBA games are being played behind closed doors because of the coronavirus pandemic. “We’ve seen Steph do so many things here over the years and it’s just a privilege to coach him,” Kerr said. “We are incredibly blessed as an organisation to have Steph leading the way. What a performance.” Curry was congratulated by many on social media, including his team-

while Jayson Tatum secured a 122-120 victory for the Boston Celtics over the Detroit Pistons with fewer than three seconds to go. The Chicago Bulls beat the Dallas Mavericks 118-108 to claim their third win in four games. There were also victories for the Washington Wizards and the Utah Jazz.
