Fire still ravaging Dzükou valley: NDRF
CM undertakes aerial survey
Correspondent/PTI
KOHIMA, JAN 5 (NPN): National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has expressed concern that the forest fire at Dzukou valley was “continuously increasing its magnitude” and spreading towards the hills of neighbouring Manipur. According to PTI, NDRF spokesman said NDRF has deployed seven teams in the affected areas of Kohima district Nagaland and Senapati district in Manipur to assist firefighters to extinguish the fire. Of the total seven NDRF teams, three are approaching the affected area from the western side near Essi hills in Kohima district. The rest of the team were approaching the area from the eastern side at Mao in Senapati. The fire which initially started from the Southern side of the valley has now spread to the South-Western side burning every tree and other vegetation in its path. The fire, at the Elephant gate has now reportedly spread to Tevirü (Cherry) range and inching closer to human habitat on the extreme West side.
NH urges Centre to announce renewal of CF with Niki’s group DIMAPUR, JAN 5 (NPN): Following the recent decision of the Niki Sumi-led NSCN (K) to renew the cease fire with the government of India , Naga Hoho has urged upon the government of India to “formally announce the renewal of cease fire” with Niki’s group “without any pre-condition” for an inclusive solution. Naga Hoho in a statement expressed its conviction and appreciation of the “matured decision” taken by ‘gen’(retd) Niki Sumi to renew the cease fire but said Nagas were “still in dark” about what was happening between the government of India and Niki’s group. NH pointed out since its inception, it had always strived for peaceful and inclusive “Indo-Naga political settlement” through nonviolent means to resolve the long drawn political movement. NH said it was concerned when NSCN (K) abrogated the cease fire in 2015 which it signed with the Centre in 2001. For this, NH said its delegation went to Myanmar in 2016 to meet SS Khaplang leader of undivided NSCN (K) but could not meet him but conveyed to his emissary to renew the cease fire to carry forward the peace process for solution.

Nagaland Post reporter at ground zero spoke to NDRF operational in-charge (Nagaland side) and spokesperson asst. commandant, Santosh Kumar Singh. He said the NDRF was using everything at their disposal to douse the fire that was destroying a large tract of forest ecology and biodiversity in the area. Singh lamented that the biggest hurdle affecting the operations was the strong wind blowing from different directions. Turbulence caused by the strong winds also affected the ‘Bambi
bucket operation’ being carried out by the Indian Air Force. Singh also disclosed that three NDRF teams with around 30 personnel each were engaged in the operation to help douse the fire. He said that the NDRF personnel along with all other agencies and SAYO volunteers were able to make a fire line cutting of over 3000 metres at various locations, since it was the most effective way besides aerial support. Southern Angami Public Organization (SAPO)
president Vimeyol Theyo, who also trekked to the base camp said that SAPO was very concerned since the fire was burning out all its ancestral land, which is a great resource to its people. Theyo said SAPO was ready to provide manpower besides help in other form to ensure that the fire was completely doused. He also informed that 10 volunteers from each of the 13 Southern Angami villages were regularly deployed at ground zero to assist in the fire fighting.
Health ministry ready to roll out COVID vaccine in around a week NEW DELHI, JAN 5 (PTI): The Union Health Ministry on Tuesday said it is prepared to roll out COVID-19 vaccine within about a week, but a final decision on the launch date is yet to be taken. At a press briefing, Union Health Secretary Rajesh Bhushan said healthcare and frontline workers need not register themselves for the vaccination drive as their database has been uploaded on the Co-WIN vaccine delivery management system in a bulk. The provision of registration and editing of data would arise while immunising the population priority group, he said. “Based on the feedback from the dr y-r un of vaccination drive, the health ministry is ready to introduce COVID-19 vaccine within 10 days from
the date of emergency use authorisation,” Bhushan said. However, while responding to a question on the rollout of vaccines, Bhushan said the final decision will be taken by the government. The Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI) had on Sunday approved Oxford-AstraZeneca’s Covishield and indigenously developed Covaxin of Bharat Biotech for restricted emergency use in the country. NITI Aayog member (Health) Dr V K Paul said an optimistic scenario is emerging with the pandemic situation in India consistently improving in terms of active cases and new deaths declining. “Let’s hope this trend will continue. In terms of the new UK mutant issue, this variant has entered this
country and 71 people have been isolated. This shows our capacity to mount that kind of a scientific investigation. “Also, we have not seen emergence of any untoward cluster in the country as of now which is reassuring,” he said. On the two vaccines that have been granted approval for restricted emergency use by the DCGI, Paul reiterated that all scientific and statutory requirements have been met and regulatory norms followed while granting permission and authorisation. “No vaccine today in any country has got regular authorisation. The world is exercising this option using scientific criteria and thinking to take decision in larger interest of public health and humanity,” he said.

Meanwhile, Nagaland chief minister Neiphiu Rio undertook an aerial survey of the Valley on Tuesday to assess the damage caused by the raging fire as well as the operations being carried out to contain and douse it. However owing to inclement weather the chopper carrying Rio and his team could not land at either of the two helipads constructed in the valley for the first responders. According to a statement issued by the press & media of the cell at CMO, during the aerial survey, Rio witnessed the patches in the valley which were burnt and the portions where the fire was still raging. Rio also took note of ground operations being carried out by personnel of Central and State agencies like NDRF, State Disaster Response Force, forest department, Nagaland Police, etc, along with Souther n Angami Youth Organisation (SAYO) volunteers for making traditional fire line cutting to contain the fire and protect

Haryana reports over 4L poultry deaths in 10 days; Kerala culls chickens, ducks
Describing the foothill road as “a dream project of the Nagas”, the Eastern Nagaland Peoples’ Organization (ENPO) has urged the state government to take up the project with the Centre for inclusion as a “priority project” and also to at least take up construction of motorable road at the earliest. ENPO through its media cell stated that the snail pace construction of “foothill road” connecting Khelma with Tizit , which started way back in 1974, has put the Nagas at the mercy of neighbouring state (Cont’d on p-8) due to frequent bandhs and

crows in Indore have been found with the H5N8 strain since the pathogen was first detected in the city a week back, while in Rajasthan, after Jhalwar, birds in Kota and Baran were found with the infection. However, no cases have been reported yet in Maharashtra, which shares borders with Madhya Pradesh. Officials in Himachal Pradesh surveyed the area around the Pong Dam Lake sanctuary in Kangra district to check the spread of the flu to domestic poultry birds, a day after samples of dead migratory birds there tested positive for H5N8. Till now, 2,700 migratory birds, mostly barheaded geese, have been found dead in the lake area
and samples have been sent for testing, state animal husbandry officials said. In Kerala, the operation to cull birds in and around a one-km radius of the affected areas in Alappuzha and Kottayam was launched a day after results of samples tested at the National Institute of High Security Animal Diseases in Bhopal confirmed the outbreak of the bird flu in the two districts. Rapid response teams, set up by the administration, began culling ducks, hens and other domestic birds as per guidelines, officials said. In Indore, the presence of bird flu was first detected on December 29, when about 50 crows were found dead on the Daly College
campus of the Residency area, and tests run on two of the carcasses confirmed the presence of the pathogen. Jammu and Kashmir sounded an alert and started collecting samples to check the health of winged guests flocking to the Union territory during winters, officials said as neighbouring Himachal Pradesh reported cases of bird flu. Joint teams of the animal husbandry and wildlife departments on Tuesday visited the Gharana wetland in the outskirts of Jammu and collected 25 bird droppings for testing to ascertain whether any of the birds are infected with the avian influenza, officials said. Tamil Nadu stepped up surveillance on inter-state borders and announced a contingency plan for the management of possible human cases. Karnataka health min-
suming the construction and further appealed to the firm to complete the bridge at the earliest. Meanwhile, the committee has directed all heavy trucks and goods carriers plying on the aligned foothills road to cautiously use the road to avoid further damage and obstructing the movement of smaller public vehicle. It also urged the log truck and stone crusher operators to maintain the road for all vehicles in their area of operations.
Include foothill road as ‘priority project’: ENPO tells govt blockades imposed by various organisations. ENPO said that foothill road would cut short travel time connecting many districts with Dimapur. It, however, expressed regret that the foothill road project has been left out in the recently announced road projects by the Ministry of Road Transport & Highways (MoRTH) in Nagaland. While extending its deep appreciation to the chief minister for his commitment and keen interest in the foothill road project, which was revived in the year 2013, the organization
also expressed gratitude to the NFHRCC for their “commendable job thus far” and assured to extend its support in their endeavour. According to ENPO, the earth cutting has been completed from Tizit to Dimapur covering Mon, Longleng, Mokokchung, Wokha and Dimapur districts. It said that the Doyang bridge was also on the verge of completion. Further, it said that the state government has also submitted for the approval of the “Trans Express Highway (Foothill Road). The Group of Ministers will have to finalize the quantum of reservations without affecting the rights of the existing Scheduled Tribes including reservations in education, jobs, political reservations etc. The Group of Ministers decided to take the views of all the stakeholders into consideration so that there is no opposition when the Bill comes up for consideration in the Parliament, sources added. Sources also said that after the Group of Ministers submits its report, it is likely to be cleared by the State Cabinet before the same is sent to the Government of India.

Minister Kalita said at Dimu Rangia that the Congress party has vanished. They will get seats in single digits, and their alliance with AIUDF will get 15-17 seats in total. He further criticised the newly formed regional party, Asom Jatiya Parishad (AJP). Kalita reacted to AJP’s promise to provide employment to the youth of the state. He said that let AJP first form the government. Kalita reiterated the commitment of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for maintaining the peace and progress of the state. He said that the party is committed to the development of Assam, and they do not believe in communal politics. Earlier in December last year, Assam Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president Ranjeet Kumar Dass said that the Congress party and All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) will only win 22 seats together in the upcoming Assam Assembly Elections of 2021. Dass also said that that BJP-led alliance will win around 102-104 constituencies in the upcoming elections. Dass said that these figures are based on the survey done by the workers of their party. Tripura teachers continue sit-in amid winter chill
Aga rtala, Jan 5 (IANS): Despite cold weather, the indefinite sitin protest by thousands of Tripura government school teachers, who had lost their jobs following court verdicts, continued for the 30th day on Tuesday even as the BJP-led state government is yet to hold any talk with them during the ongoing stir. The agitating teachers had rejected the Bharatiya Janata Party-led government’s offer to apply for the vacant posts of different departments afresh for which the state government recently issued notifications. Accompanied by their children and family elders, members of the Joint Movement Committee (JMC), which is spearheading the agitations, continued their sit-in demonstrations and vowed to continue their agitation until the government reinstated their jobs. Meanwhile, a fivemember delegation of the opposition Communist Party of India-Marxist led by former Chief Minister Manik Sarkar met Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb and requested him K Y M C
to resolve the issue at the earliest even as the BJP and Left leaders continued to attack each other over the issue. Both the Chief Minister and state Education and Law Minister Ratan Lal Nath have urged the agitated teachers to compete for around 9,000 vacant posts in various departments, including the Education Department, for which the state government recently issued recruitment notifications. Accusing the previous Left Front government, Nath said due to its mistakes and wrong decisions, 10,323 government teachers had lost their jobs due to the court orders. Sarkar, who is now the opposition leader, told the media that after the Tripura HC and the Supreme Court had terminated the jobs of 10,323 government teachers in 2011, 2014 and 2017, the then Left Front government had created 13,000 posts to accommodate these teachers alternatively. However, he alleged that the BJP leaders, before the 2018 Assembly polls, promised to regularise their jobs if they come
to power. “But nothing has been done by the BJP government for these hapless teachers,” said Sarkar, who was the Chief Minister for 20 years till the BJPled government came to power in Tripura in March 2018. The BJP-led Tripura government had earlier given a lump-sum financial aid of Rs 35,000 to the residual numbers of 8,882 government school teachers, who lost their jobs from March 31 this year, following SC and Tripura HC verdicts which had cited “discrepancies in recruitments”. Of the 10,323 former government teachers, 1,365 people got alternative jobs and availed different income avenues while 78 people died with many of them committing suicide. JMC’s Joint Convener Dalia Das said the teachers already completed their government service for many years and several of them crossed their stipulated age limit while the state government’s offer is “impractical” and against the interest of the teachers. “We had called off our agitation after CM Biplab
Deb on October 3 assured to take steps to solve our problems permanently within two months. The two months have already lapsed but Deb and his government are yet to take any step when the teachers are suffering a lot after losing their jobs in March this year,” Das told the media. Another JMC’s Joint Convener Bimal Saha said thousands of teachers, including their family members, are facing hardships for the past nine months while 76 retrenched teachers have already died with some committing suicide. The teachers were inducted into the state government schools in different phases from 2010 when the CPI-M-led Left government was in power. The Tripura HC in 2011 and 2014 in separate judgements terminated the services of all 10,323 teachers, saying the selection criteria had “discrepancies” and subsequently, the apex court upheld the HC’s decision. After separate appeals by the previous Left and the incumbent BJP governments, the Supreme Court, however, extended their services up to March 2020. K Y M C

The Centre has been deploying National Disaster Relief Force (NDRF) personnel besides helicopters of the Indian Air Force to

Aizawl, Jan 5 (PTI): At least 67 people, including six women, have died due to substance abuse in Mizoram in 2020 with heroin being the main killer drug, an official said on Tuesday. The state had reported 55 drug-related fatalities in 2019. “All the 67 people, who died of drug abuse last year, were addicted to heroin. The state government has been taking several measures to curb the menace,” the excise and narcotics department official said. Most of the drugs, especially heroin, have been smuggled from Myanmar, he said. Mizoram, which is sandwiched between Myanmar and Bangladesh, has been grappling with drug abuse since 1984 when the death of a heroin user was reported for the first time in the state. The hilly state shares 722 km of the international border with these two countries. Until 2015, spasmo proxyvon, which is used as a pain- killer, had caused maximum drugrelated deaths in the state. With an increasing supply of heroin from Myanmar and neighbouring states, it has become the main killer drug, the official said. The excise and narcotics department’s data showed that at least 1,646 people, including 193 women, have died of drug abuse in Mizoram since 1984. In a bid to prevent the spread of the coronavirus disease, the international border with the two countries have been sealed since March 2020, which has considerably reduced smuggling of drug and alcohol last year, he added.

Bharat Biotech, SII declare truce pledge for smooth rollout of COVID-19 vaccines
Hyderabad, Jan 5 (PTI): A day after Bharat Biotech slammed Serum Institute of India’s CEO Adar Poonawalla for his ‘water’ comment about some COVID-19 vaccines, both the vaccine makers on Tuesday jointly pledged for a smooth roll out of the antidote in the country and the world, saying saving lives and livelihoods was the most important task for them. In a joint statement posted on their respective twitter accounts, the companies said Serum Institute Chief Executive Officer Poonawalla and Bharat Biotech Chairman Krishna Ella communicated their combined intent to develop, manufacture and supply the COVID-19 vaccines. They said the more important task in front of them was saving the lives and livelihoods of populations in India and the world. nomic normalcy at the earliest, the statement said. We are fully aware of the importance of vaccines for the people and countries alike, we hereby communicate our joint pledge to provide global access for our COVID-19 vaccines, it said. The Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI) on Sunday approved Oxford COVID-19 vaccine Covishield, manufactured by the Serum Institute, and Covaxin of the city-based Bharat Biotech for restricted emergency use in the country. emergency use authorisation in the country, the focus was on manufacturing, supply and distribution, such that people who need it the most receive high-quality, safe and efficacious vaccines, the two companies said. “Both our companies are fully engaged in this activity and consider it our duty to the nation and the world at large to ensure a smooth roll out of vaccines. Each of our companies continue their COVID-19 vaccine development activities as planned,” the joint statement said. Without naming
Poonawalla who had called vaccines other than that of Pfizer, Moderna and Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccines “just like water”, Krishna Ella on Monday in a media briefing slammed the Punebased vaccine maker for the remarks. “We do 200 per cent honest clinical trials and yet we receive backlash. If I am wrong, tell me. Some companies have branded me like water,” Ella had said. Poonawalla on Tuesday tweeted that there would be a statement clearing up miscommunication with regard to Bharat Biotech. “I would like to clarify two matters; as there is confusion in the public domain, exports of vaccines are permitted to all countries and a joint public statement clearing up any recent miscommunication with regards to Bharat Biotech will be made,” he said. Covaxin is currently undergoing phase 3 clinical trials involving 24,000 volunteers.
‘Centre has not banned export of COVID vaccine’ NEW DELHI, JAN 5 (PTI): The Union government has not banned the export of any COVID-19 vaccine that has been granted restricted emergency use approval by the drug regulator, the Health Ministry said on Tuesday, while urging the media to guard against the spread of such misinformation. The Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI) had on Sunday approved Oxford COVID-19 vaccine Covishield, manufactured by the Serum Institute, and indigenously developed Covaxin of Bharat Biotech for restricted emergency use in the country, paving the way for a massive inoculation drive. Responding to a question during a press briefing on Tuesday, Union Health Secretary Rajesh Bushan said, “The Union government has not banned the export of any one of the COVID-19 vaccines and this should be absolutely clear.”
Bird flu: Culling of birds begins in two districts of Kerala A l a pp u z h a / Ko t tayam, Jan 5 (PTI): Culling of chickens and ducks began on Tuesday in parts of two districts in Kerala to contain H5N8 strain of bird flu there, official sources said. Rapid response teams, set up by the administration, began culling ducks, hens and other domestic birds in and around a one km radius of the affected areas in Alappuzha and Kottayam districts on Tuesday morning as per the guidelines issued by the government, they said. The operation was launched a day after results of the samples tested at the National Institute of High Security Animal Diseases in Bhopal confirmed the outbreak of the bird flu in the two districts. Alappuzha district authorities said culling of birds in four panchayats of Nedumudi, Thakazhy, Pallippad and Karuvatta in Kuttanad region, where the outbreak has been reported, was ex-

pected to be completed by Wednesday evening. In Karuvatta panchayat alone, around 12,000 birds will be culled, an official said. In the affected areas of Neendoor panchayat in Kottayam district, the rapid response teams have culled some 3,000 birds so far, authorities said. Around 1,700 ducks had died in a farm in Neendoor due to the viral infection. Officials have said around 40,000 domestic birds, including 34,000 in
Kuttanad region alone, will be culled to check the spread of the H5N8 virus. Although the situation has been brought under control, authorities have sounded a high alert in the districts, considering the potential of the virus to infect humans. The Alappuzha District Collector has banned the use and trade of meat, eggs and waste of domestic birds, including ducks and chicken, in Kuttanad and Karthikappalli Taluks, officials said.
VHP, Bajrang Dal workers detained In 2:1 verdict, SC gives green signal for Central Vista revamp during protest over temple demolition
Police stop VHP supporters who were taking part in a protest in Chandni Chowk area. ((PTI)
New Delhi, Jan 5 (PTI): Vishwa Hindu Parishad and Bajrang Dal members were detained by police during a protest on Tuesday over the demolition of a Hanuman temple at Chandni Chowk in Delhi. The temple was demolished on Sunday by the North Delhi Municipal Corporation in accordance with court orders as part of the ongoing Chandni Chowk beautification plan. The protesters, carry-
ing saffron flags and raising slogans, took out a march from the Gauri Shankar Mandir to the site where the temple existed. They were stopped by police at a barricade. According to VHP spokesperson Mahendra Rawat, around 15-20 workers and leaders, including its Delhi unit president Kapil Khanna, vice president Surendra Gupta, secretary Ravi and Bajrang Dal state convener Bharar Batra were
detained during the protest. A senior police official said 27 protesters who gathered near the Gauri Shankar temple on Tuesday were detained owing to COVID19 guidelines. They were taken to a nearby police station and released later. These protesters belonged to Vishwa Hindu Parishad and Bajrang Dal outfits, the official said. As a precautionary measure, security personnel have been deployed in the area, police said.
New Delhi, Jan 5 (PTI): The Supreme Court on Tuesday gave the green signal to the Centre’s Rs 13,500 crore Central Vista revamp project here that includes a new Parliament building, holding there was “no infirmity” in the grant of environment clearance and permissions for change of land use. Observing it cannot jump to put a “full stop” on execution of policy matters and the courts cannot be called upon to “govern”, a three-judge bench in a 2:1 verdict at the same time said it is the “bounden obligation” of the government in a democratic set up to keep the citizens well informed about its actions as disclosure of full information is empowerment and acts as an “enabler for meaningful participation”. Justice Sanjiv Khanna gave a dissenting judgement in which he touched upon issues like the “failure” to take prior approval of the Heritage Conservation Committee(HCC). He also said public participation is
not to be a mechanical exercise or formality. The ambitious redevelopment project of the Central Vista -- the nation’s power corridor -- envisages a new triangular Parliament building, a common central secretariat and revamping of the three-km-long Rajpath, from Rashtrapati Bhavan to India Gate. The Parliament building, with a seating capacity for 900 to 1,200 MPs, is to be constructed by August in 2022 to coincide with the 75th anniversary of Independence. A three-judge bench headed by Justice A M Khanwilkar in the majority verdict held that the grant of environmental clearance and the notification for change in land use for construction of the new Parliament building under the project was valid. “We hold that there is no infirmity in the grant of: (a) ‘No Objection’ by the Central Vista Committee (CVC)….b)‘Approval’ by the Delhi Urban Art Commission (DUAC) as per the DUAC Act, 1973; and (c)

of the statutory provisions, failure to take prior approval of the Heritage Conservation Committee(HCC) and the order passed by the Expert Appraisal Committee, I have penned down a separate dissenting judgment,” Justice Khanna said. He, however, concurred with the majority verdict on the aspects of “notice inviting Bid, award of consultancy and the order of the Urban Arts Commission, as a standalone and independent order”. The majority verdict
was of the view that prior permission of the HCC can be obtained when the development work commences and it was not needed at the stage of planning and formalization of the project. “Accordingly, the respondents (authorities) shall obtain...prior permission of the designated Authority before actually starting any development/redevelopment work on the stated plots/structures/precincts governed by the heritage laws...if already not obtained,” it said.

also mark the 75th anniversary of UNICEF. Over the course of the year, UNICEF and its partners will be commemorating the anniversary with events and announcements celebrating three-quarters of a century of protecting children from conflict, disease and exclusion and championing their right to survival, health and education. “Today, as the world faces a global pandemic, economic slowdown, rising poverty and deepening inequality, the need for UNICEF’s work is as great as ever,” said Fore. “For the last 75 years, throughout conflicts, displacements, natural disasters and crises, UNICEF has been there for the world’s children. As a New Year dawns, we renew our commitment to protect children, to speak up for their rights, and to make sure their voices are heard, no matter where they live,” Fore said. In response to the global pandemic, UNICEF launched the Reimagine campaign, a global effort to prevent the COVID-19 pandemic from becoming a lasting crisis for children. Through the campaign, UNICEF is issuing an urgent appeal to governments, the public, donors and the private sector to join UNICEF as it seeks to respond, recover and reimagine a better, post-pandemic world.

UNITED NATIONS, JAN 5 (PTI): More than 371,500 babies were born worldwide on New Year’s Day and India is estimated to have recorded the highest number of births at around 60,000, according to the UN’s children’s agency. UNICEF said that an estimated 371,504 babies were born around the world on New Year’s Day. Fiji in the Pacific was projected to have welcomed 2021’s first baby while the United States would welcome its last. Globally, over half of these births are estimated to have taken place in 10 countries: India (59,995), China (35,615), Nigeria (21,439), Pakistan (14,161), Indonesia (12,336), Ethiopia (12,006), the United States (10,312), Egypt (9,455), Bangladesh (9,236) and the Democratic Republic of the Congo (8,640), it said. In total, an estimated 140 million children will be born in 2021 and their average life expectancy is expected to be 84 years, the UN agency said. “The children born today enter a world far different than even a year ago, and a New Year brings a new opportunity to reimagine it,” UNICEF Executive Director Henrietta Fore said, calling on nations to make 2021 the year they start to build a fairer, safer, healthier world for children. Vaccine nationalism
M
illions of people worldwide have been infected with COVID-19 and so far, more than a million have lost their lives because of the pandemic. A huge global research effort is taking place to bring a fast-tracked vaccine to the market. Currently there are more than 165 vaccines being developed, with some already in human trials. The race to be the first to obtain the vaccine against COVID-19 has led to some expressing concerns about drastically cutting short the time needed for “trials”. Vaccines undergo at least three phases of human trials before they get approved. During Phase I, small groups of people(around 100) receive the trial vaccine. In Phase II, the clinical study is expanded and vaccine is given to 1000 to 2000 people who have characteristics (such as age and physical health) similar to those for whom the new vaccine is intended. In Phase III, the vaccine is given to 10,000 to 20,000) people and tested for efficacy and safety. Many vaccines undergo Phase IV formal, ongoing studies after the vaccine is approved and licensed. What has dominated the concerns about the manner in which the trial periods have been drastically cut short is about the side effects. According to eminent virologists, it takes anywhere between ten to fifteen years to produce an efficacious vaccine. However, because of the extreme urgency to halt the rampaging virus, some pharmaceutical firms have rushed to conduct trials within 11 months. Physical distancing, the use of masks and test, track and trace programmes are currently the only effective measures against the spread of the disease, and economic sectors that rely on close physical proximity between people, such as recreation and retail, will continue to be the most affected.Even in terms of cost, it is estimated that investments to find discover an efficacious vaccine is a whopping Rs.95 lakh crore. The total wealth of India as per reports is around Rs.13 lakh crore. The COVID-19 has become the most deadly virus that has not only caused a global health crisis but also ruined the economies of countries. National governments are spending trillions of dollars to fight the negative economic impact, but until there is a vaccine or other treatment widely available, the financial cost will continue to be felt around the world. Even when a safe and effective COVID-19 vaccine or treatment is eventually developed, further challenges will emerge with regard to the manufacturing and distribution process. There is a threat that 'vaccine nationalism' could have negative consequences on how well the global pandemic is managed and contained. This is also evident in India where the Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation accorded approval for restricted emergency use of the Oxford COVID-19 vaccine Covishield, manufactured by the Serum Institute of India (SII), and the indigenously developed vaccine Covaxin of Bharat Biotech. A doctor-cumresearch head of a lab affiliated to a government research lab also expressed reservations about the nod given to Covaxin since its efficacy has not been proved. Malini Aisola of the All India Drug Action Network questioned the motive of top experts in the Subject Expert Committee(SEC) of the government in approving the covaxin post-haste. The government’s director of AIIMS however said covaxin was only a “back up vaccine” to be used in emergency but was not forthcoming about its efficacy. Vaccine nationalism is thus, an invitation to one problem while trying to solve another.
DailyDevotion The Life of Power to Follow
Jesus answered him, "Where I am going you cannot follow Me now, but you shall follow Me afterward." —John 13:36 “And when He had spoken this, He said to him, ‘Follow Me’ ” (John 21:19). Three years earlier Jesus had said, “Follow Me” (Matthew 4:19), and Peter followed with no hesitation. The irresistible attraction of Jesus was upon him and he did not need the Holy Spirit to help him do it. Later he came to the place where he denied Jesus, and his heart broke. Then he received the Holy Spirit and Jesus said again, “Follow Me” (John 21:19). Now no one is in front of Peter except the Lord Jesus Christ. The first “Follow Me” was nothing mysterious; it was an external following. Jesus is now asking for an internal sacrifice and yielding (see John 21:18). Between these two times Peter denied Jesus with oaths and curses (see Matthew 26:69-75). But then he came completely to the end of himself and all of his self-sufficiency. There was no part of himself he would ever rely on again. In his state of destitution, he was finally ready to receive all that the risen Lord had for him. “…He breathed on them, and said to them, ‘Receive the Holy Spirit’ ” (John 20:22). No matter what changes God has performed in you, never rely on them. Build only on a Person, the Lord Jesus Christ, and on the Spirit He gives. All our promises and resolutions end in denial because we have no power to accomplish them. When we come to the end of ourselves, not just mentally but completely, we are able to “receive the Holy Spirit.” “Receive the Holy Spirit” — the idea is that of invasion. There is now only One who directs the course of your life, the Lord Jesus Christ.

Post-mortem
Yemen government A has tough road ahead
New Years Expectation
M
ultiple explosions rocked the Aden International airport shortly after an aircraft landed carrying the newly formed cabinet of the country's Saudi-backed government. Dozens of casualties were reported and the Yemeni government blamed Houthi rebels for this attack. Recently a power-sharing government was announced in wartorn Yemen consisting of 24 ministers including representatives of the separatist Southern Transitional Council (STC), which is backed by the UAE and Yemeni government headed by President Hadi. Prime Minister Dr. Maeen Abdulmalek Saeed was reappointed to head the new cabinet. The unity agreement comes as the Houthis have consolidated control over most of Yemen’s north, with the exception of the oil-rich area of Mareb. It also comes just ahead of the swearing-in of US President-elect Joe Biden, who has promised to end Washington’s support to the Saudi-led military coalition. Under the supervision of the Saudi de-escalation committee in Yemen, hundreds of military troops from the former government and the STC departed contested areas in the southern province of Abyan. Military units also withdrew from Aden and were redeployed in battlefields with the Houthis. The formation of this government which is based now in the temporary capital Aden is definitely a positive sign and this was one of the major demands of Yemen civil society. Also, it’s being seen as a unification of all anti-Houthis forces. But the newly formed government of the poorest country in the Middle East faces towering political, security, and economic challenges. Let’s have a look at these challenges Humanitarian crisis- The imminent threat of famine has made the majority of Yemenis dependent on some form of aid for survival, a situation the United Nations calls the world's
U
nder the given situation, the Tenyemi National Workers Forum (TNWF) is faced with the national necessity to look back into mischievous indulgence of Dr. SC Jamir that brought terrible harm to the Naga national workers in particular and the Naga national movement in general. We hereby resolved to issue a press statement to set the record straight. In the tumultuous history of Indo-Naga political conflict, there are certain matters that remain a secret but there are certainly organized conspiracies and plots we have to bring out of the closet that are closely linked with SC Jamir because he is one who bloodied Naga history and spit venom to all who are against NPC’s (Naga People’s Convention) 16-Point Agreement, not even sparing Mr. AZ Phizo, the revered President of the Naga National Council (NNC), who led the Nagas from the front to declare Naga Independence on the 14th August, 1947. Thus, Dr. SC Jamir spare no effort to make roughshod of everything but stick to his infidelity to kiss history in his desperate defense of 16 Point Agreement, standing by his off-repeated effrontery that the 16 Point Agreement is the alpha and omega for Naga political solution. This is reflected in his last interview to Dimapur Today and uploaded on YouTube. Naga people, particularly those in the field doing the donkey’s job fighting for the political rights, bewails the like of SC Jamir who have done every conceivable things to finish off the Naga political issue using the most repugnant policy. The Naga people naturally find his political ideas totally repulsive. Delinquent person as he proved himself to be, he fiddled with Naga political issue as his personal fiefdom and put the bona fide Naga freedom fighters on his firing line using the most abominable weapons of destruction. He was the last surviving Naga signatory of the 16 Points Agreement which led to birth of the present Nagaland state in 1963. The 16
worst humanitarian crisis. According to a recent report of Unicef some 80% of the population needs humanitarian assistance, including more than 12 million children. Also, public health experts warn that the Coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic may have significant negative effects on Yemen’s vulnerable population. To date, most humanitarian agencies believe that the extent of the outbreak in Yemen has been underreported. Crumbling Economy- Yemen is facing unprecedented economic and financial challenges, precipitated by the intensification of conflict since September 2014. The economy has also been hit by inflation, with Yemen's currency is being traded at approximately 750 against the US dollar in the government-controlled areas. That has placed many essential goods out of reach of common people as Yemen imports 90% of its staple food. Trade has nosedived and investment is almost non-existent. Hydrocarbon production which used to be 125,000 barrels per day before the start of the conflict and accounted for 90% of exports in 2015, is expected to continue to decline. Political Instability- For the time being it seems that all the anti-Houthis forces i.e., Government headed by President Abd-Rabbuh Mansur Hadi, Southern separatist STC, and main Sunni Islamist party Islah are united and part of the new government. But to balance a decentralized federalist state that provides equal degrees of autonomy and resource sharing to southern separatists, northern tribes, and other traditionally independent regions in Yemen will be a tight rope walk. Any Yemeni national leader should be capable of “dancing on the heads of snakes,” as the late president Ali Abdullah Saleh described the challenge of governing the poor and divided country. Military Pressure- Yemen's government troops and the Houthi militia
are constantly engaged in regular confrontation at multiple fronts especially in the country's southwestern province of Taiz and near the oil-rich region of Marib. Also, Iran is increasing its military support to the Houthis. Yemeni military commanders have recently told Arab News that the Houthi bombardment has become more destructive and precise, killing more soldiers and civilians. This shows that Houthis have restocked their depleted arsenal of weapons with more advanced ones. Houthis are also carrying out strikes through the use of missiles and armed drones deep inside Yemeni government-controlled territory. It should be remembered by the international community at large and especially by Yemen's wealthy Arab neighbours that’s Yemen’s war is a gift to Iran. Tehran sees it in this way that quiet manipulation of the Yemeni war has reinforced its main opponent Saudis fears that it is flexing muscle in their backyard. Iran’s relationship with the Houthis plays into Iran’s strategy of controlling key Arab waterways. Control of Yemen and its strategic ports give control of vital commercial and energy shipping lanes that connect the Red Sea to the Indian Ocean and the Middle East to Europe. It is in the benefit of everyone apart from Iran that Yemen remains stable and peaceful. As unstable and war-torn Yemen will remain a haven for terrorist groups like Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) and the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL). Also prone to Iranian manipulation. Hence all the world and regional powers should support the new government with all their means. So that this government is able to bring security and stability to this war-torn country. s we usher into the New Year, there is an aroma of optimism in the air on the prospect of the dawn of peace and stability in the State except the prevalence of pandemic as our guest. The State has suffered long enough under the weight of uncertainties and staggering development and people do deserve a spell of peace and progress. The size of Nagaland State to my view will neither grow nor shrink in the coming days as the prospect of give and take attitude of our neighbors will not be generous. The issue of separate flag and a separate constitution may also remain more of an academic issue for debate but less a reality. Nothing historic nor extra-ordinary elements may be stored up in the coffer of final peace settlement as we have presently acquired most of the ingredients that are accommodative and workable. Talks and parleys will continue in the coming days with the characteristics displays of hopes and despairs and some rooms in the Guest House in Delhi will remain occupied with the harbinger of peace for quite sometime. The overweight and oversized Government employees of the State that includes, besides regular appointees, back door or front door appointments, excess appointment, proxy appointment and so on will continue to devour the junk of State finances, living no alternatives for the Government but to fondle with the meager left over amount for the maintenance of the entire State’s machineries that includes various developmental initiatives that infact is the need of the hour. There is ever y likelihood that a good number of the regular appointees of the Government will continue to
remain nonchalantly at District Headquarters or many at Dimapur and their substitutes will perform the ambassadorial assignments at the place of posting and pay and allowances in such cases will be mutually shared between the appointees and its substitutes. Such pattern of administration has become a work culture against which none will complain and there is no effective machinery to exercise control over such lapses. Those few sincere officials will continue to bear the burden of overwork and work overtime and those irresponsible officials with empty drums that entered the service from backdoors and front doors will move around scot-free either politicizing or even preaching in Churches. People both from the rural and urban areas of the State will be able to have a taste of peace and tranquility in the State to some extent in the coming days. It is infact appropriate time to speed up initiatives in taking up various developmental programs instead of investing precious time and money on erecting welcome gates and monoliths. People expect to hear from public leaders on their vision and programs that are prepared for the masses but it is likely that they may rather resort to the usual norms of spending more time in Delhi or elsewhere instead of staying at home working with the people. We will be entering into the New Year under the shadow of pandemic. Leaders that will not bulldoze problems but handle problems with care and leaders of vision and competence in motivating the people to move forward towards the goal of meeting their needs has become the need of the hour. The history of SC Jamir’s conspiracies Points Agreement was signed between the Naga People’s Convention (NPC) and the Government of India (GoI) in 1960 making Nagaland the 16th state of the Indian Union. The historical fact behind NPC’s role is mediator turned treachery. Thus, this agreement was signed behind the back of Naga freedom fighters. Consequently, the 16 Point Agreement became the source of political turmoil that followed. Today, SC Jamir is meddling in Naga issue using the NNPGs to find Naga solution on the basis of the 16 Points Agreement. On the ongoing contentious issue of the Naga flag and Yehzabo (constitution) he deplores the issues saying that it is not applicable to the present Nagaland state. This put him in direct conflict with the Naga political group like NSCN which is ready to fight on to the last man standing in defense of Naga flag and constitution that identify Naga political issue to the world. With his inherent antiNaga political movement Jamir made bewildering allegations against our highly revered AZ Phizo. He went far enough to say that AZ Phizo never talk about Naga flag and constitution. This smack of his sick mind and nothing else as only insane person will question about Phizo not talking anything on flag and constitution. Jamir need to ponder on these following points of historical facts: Is 1947 Naga flag hoisting ignored by Jamir? Is the 14th August, 1947 Naga Independence declaration byPhizo without flag and constitution? Is 1951 plebiscite without flag and constitution? Phizo gave his life and everything for the Naga nation. Does Dr. Jamir’s allegations on Phizo qualify in any manner? It may be made known of one incident when the then Prime Minister of India Mr. Jawaharlal Nehru issued a statement in Lok Sabha wherein he expressed his desire to meet Phizo in India. But apprehending disturbing the 16 Points Agreement SC Jamir who was then Parliamentary Secretary, Ministry
of External Affairs (MEA) raised his voice against the proposal as he also prevailed upon Shilu Ao, Chief Executive Counselor to go against the proposal of Nehru.Nehru was politically conscious enough that the 16-Point Agreement is not going to be basis for Naga political solution and that was the sole reason he wanted to talk toPhizo. But this plan was aborted by SC. Jamir’s conspiracy. During the height of Naga political struggle under National Socialist Council of Nagalim (NSCN) after the Khaplang engineered crisis, SC Jamir was at his game as a frenzied demagogue restless to destroy Naga political struggle spearheaded by NSCN. When SC Jamir was the Chief Minister of Nagaland state he openly collaborated with the central government in order to destroy the NSCN. He used NSCN-K leaders like Dally Mungro and Kitovi Zhimomi and their boys like his private army to target NSCN and its public supporters. The formation of Nagaland Youth Liberation Front (NYLF) 6th Brigade and 9th Brigade are all linked to SC Jamir’s evil design to crush the NSCN. However, God forbid Jamir to have his way. These anti-NSCN forces were all eliminated in the counter operation launched by NSCN. But the desperado Jamir went for another abhorrent anti-NSCN operation under his horrendous dementedness to evict the NSCN from Nagaland soil by declaring that the “chaff and paddy” must be separated. Under this policy he made a joint issue with NSCN-K and served “quit notice” against the Tangkhuls in Nagaland state. Much to his sadistic pleasure, as many as thirty five (35) innocent Tangkhuls that includes chemist, scientist, teacher, pastor, students, farmers and innocent laymen were killed by NSCN-K in Kohima and Dimapur mainly. But the Tangkhuls stood their ground as they find no reason to quit Nagaland. Determined to eliminate the freedom fighters led by NSCN, Jamir have his way again when he was provided by the centre Rs.103
crores as Peace Offensive Operation against NSCN. NSCN-K was also provided 100 AK-47s as a part of his Peace Offensive Operation. These AK-47 pieces were meant for modernization of Nagaland state police force. Any amount of monetary incentive was paid for killing any NSCN members or any public members belonging to the Tangkhul community. He also made fervent appeal to the Government of India to book NSCN leaders under Interpol Act. When Indo-Naga ceasefire was declared in 1997 he raised hue and cry, showing his strong displeasure for signing ceasefire with NSCN without taking the state government into confidence. He also questioned why the talk should be without precondition. He bemoaned that talk with NSCN should be conditioned under the constitution of India. In the year 1998 when Naga people decided to take the stand “we want solution not election” Jamir defied all political parties and Naga people’s decision and went ahead with election and got his INC candidates elected without people’s mandate. He put himself to the chief minister’s throne without going through the process to get democratic sanctity. It washis defiance that has gone down into Naga history. Much to the chagrin of the Naga people Jamir have the temerity to test the nerve of the Naga people when he wrote a book “The Bedrock of Naga Society” stating that the 16 Points Agreement is the alpha and omega for Naga solution. This controversial book was deliberately released when the Indo-Naga political talk was steadily progressing. Ultimately, he was made to bite the dust as Naga people disowned the book that tried to rewrite Naga history based on India created 16 Points Agreement. Thus, Naga history was saved from getting disparaged and distorted in the hands of SC Jamir. For the Naga people, Jamir is nothing more than a saddest fish that swims in the dirty water, his existence that the Nagas bewail. He continues to befuddle and beguile. Thus, misguided ele-
ments he ganged up to oppose Naga solution tooth and nail. His whole life is focused on indulging in nefarious act to sabotage the Naga people’s political movement to reset the political status that was suppressed by the Government of India. In the true sense of the term he is a hard core political criminal under whose bloody hands many lost their lives for standing up to defend the political and historical rights of the Naga people. Jamir remains the begotten son of India as he has been faithfully doing the biddings of the Government of India since Jawaharlal Nehru’s time. Even after Naga people throw him out from election he was rewarded by the Government of India by giving him the post of Governor two times in different states. For him, to defy Naga people’s aspiration he considered it as rectitude. But his hands are smeared with the blood of Naga freedom fighters. Incongruous was his handling of Naga issue and indelible are his misdoings against the Naga people. He continues to glorify the 16 Points Agreement but the fact shall remain standing that he had a long and inglorious chapter in Naga’s history. Even at his age he show himself a man he is as he speaks out of context in his interview and scornfully touched on the names of Mr. AZ Phizo, Gen. (Retd.) Kholi Konyak and Mr. Th. Muivah. It may be recalled that on the 29th February, 2012 Agri-Expo, Naga People’s Consultative Meeting, Jamir
made cheap of himself as he accused (L) Gen. Kholi Konyak of speaking Muivah’s words on inability to obtain sovereignty. Indeed he proved himself a political pariah who continues to be on collision course with history to destroy Naga people’s political identity. Significantly, when the Naga stakeholders speak out their minds to condemn and reject the rejected 16-Points Agreement reacting to SC Jamir’s personal viewpoint on 16-Points Agreement he said, “the truth is bitter”. Jamir continues to resist the simple historical fact that the Naga people hold. It was the failure of the 16Points Agreement that the Government of India had declared ceasefire and hold political negotiation to put things right for the lasting Naga solution. How long is he going to demonize the historical reality? TNWF also would put on record that it resolved to stand together and uphold the Naga National principle based on 1951 plebiscite till an honorable and acceptable settlement is achieved. The TNWF also resolved to respect the traditional land boundaries and protect the Tenyemi’s ancestral land from encroachers wherever it may be. Kuknalim! 1. Rev. Need to strictly monitor our tourist spots Sir,
It is indeed heartbreaking to see Nagaland’s paradise and pride -the Dzukou valley engulfed in flames. Though the cause of fire has not been established, I would like to point out that tourists in the past have left behind a trail of litter and it often the locals who have to do the cleaning up. I hope there is stricter monitoring so that our tourist spots are not littered or destroyed. Mhathung Yanthan, Dimapur

UK PM postpones India visit due to COVID crisis London, Jan 5 (PTI): British Prime Minister Boris Johnson on Tuesday spoke to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to express his regret over not being able to visit India as planned for the Republic Day on January 26 due to the growing health crisis created by the new variant of coronavirus in the UK. Johnson’s call with Modi came a day after he addressed the nation in a televised address to plunge the country into a new stayat-home lockdown as his medical chiefs warned that the National Health Service (NHS) was under threat of being overwhelmed by the rising infection rates. Johnson has indicated that his India visit would take place during the first half of this year and before the G7 Summit presided over by the UK, planned for later this year. “The Prime Minister spoke to Prime Minister Modi this morning, to express his regret that he will be unable to visit India later this month as planned,” a Downing Street spokesperson said. “In light of the national lockdown announced

last night, and the speed at which the new coronavirus variant is spreading, the Prime Minister said that it was important for him to remain in the UK so he can focus on the domestic response to the virus,” the spokesperson said. The two leaders underlined their “shared commitment” to the bilateral relationship, and to continuing to build on the close collaboration between India and the UK – including in response to the pandemic. “The Prime Minister said that he hopes to be able to visit India in the first

half of 2021, and ahead of the UK’s G7 Summit that Prime Minister Modi is due to attend as a guest,” the spokesperson said. Johnson accepted Modi’s invitation to be the chief guest at the Republic Day parade on January 26 last month. While accepting Modi’s invitation, Johnson had extended an invite to the Indian Prime Minister to attend the UK’s G7 Summit as one of three guest nations alongside South Korea and Australia – with a focus on his declared ambition to work with a group of “like-
minded democracies” to advance shared interests and tackle common challenges. Last month, Johnson had written to Modi to formally accept his invitation to visit India as Chief Guest at the Republic Day Parade, which was to mark his first major bilateral visit since taking office in 2019 and the first since Britain’s formal exit from the European Union (EU) at the end of the Brexit transition period on December 31, 2020. “I am absolutely delighted to be visiting India next year at the start of an exciting year for Global Britain, and look forward to delivering the quantum leap in our bilateral relationship that Prime Minister Modi and I have pledged to achieve,” Johnson said at the time. “As a key player in the Indo-Pacific region, India is an increasingly indispensable partner for the United Kingdom as we work to boost jobs and growth, confront shared threats to our security and protect our planet,” he said. It followed Modi’s invitation to Johnson in a phone call in November 2020, ahead of UK Foreign Secre-
tary Dominic Raab’s precursor tour of India to lay the groundwork for the prime ministerial level talks. Healthcare was among the key sectors of focus during Raab’s visit and cooperation in the field of coronavirus vaccines was to also be among the priorities for Johnson’s visit. “As the ‘pharmacy of the world’ India supplies more than 50 per cent of the world’s vaccines, with over a billion doses of the UK’s Oxford/AstraZeneca vaccine being manufactured at India’s Serum Institute in Pune,” Downing Street had said when confirming the Johnson’s planned India visit. “Our countries have cooperated closely throughout the coronavirus outbreak to maintain the flow of medical goods for our citizens. The UK has received 11 million face masks and 3 million packets of paracetamol from India during the pandemic, and we continue to work together to keep vital supply chains open,” it said. Trade and investment, defence and security and climate change were among the other priority areas identified on both sides.
Farmers defer Jan 6 & 7 tractor march by a day over poor weather forecast

New Delhi, Jan 5 (PTI): Protesting farmer unions Tuesday deferred their proposed tractor march from January 6 to January 7 due to a bad weather forecast, even as they asserted they will intensify their stir in the coming days. Addressing a press conference at Singhu Border here, union leaders said thousands of farmers will take out the tractor march
from all protest sites to the Kundli-Manesar-Palwal (KMP) on January 7. Swaraj Abhiyan leader Yogendra Yadav said the decision to defer the march was taken over forecast of bad weather condition on Wednesday. The city has been receiving rains sporadically over the past three days. The unions said the agitation against the three
agriculture laws will be intensified in the coming days. Senior advocate Mahesh Jethmalani, appearing for Bose, said that timing of the incident is important. He said that the timing of the incident recorded in the FIR and the report of CISF are different and sought placing on record the movement log book. The bench directed Mehta to place on record the movement log book in sealed cover and posted the matter for further hearing next week. Bose has sought direction for transferring investigation in the case to CBI or SIT or any independent agency but not West Bengal Police. He has also sought stay of investigation and further proceedings in FIRs lodged against him by the West Bengal Police pertaining to the alleged scuffle that took place on December 6.

The Supreme Court on Tuesday asked the Centre to place on record the special incident report filed by CISF on an alleged scuffle between the Trinamool Congress workers and security staff of West Bengal BJP leader Kabir Shankar Bose. The top court also asked the Centre to file in sealed cover the movement logbook of the leader pertaining to the day of incident. A bench of Justices Sanjay Kishan Kaul, Dinesh Maheshwari and Hrishikesh Roy posted the matter for hearing next week after Solicitor General Tushar Mehta said that he will be filing a special incident report in the matter during the course of the day. At the outset, the bench told Mehta that as per the last order of the court he was supposed to file a special incident report. It was established on anti-CPI(M) plank which is no more relevant now. People at the grassroot level are aware that the TMC’s days are numbered. Just wait for some more time,” he told reporters. Bhattacharya did not comment on whether the party had been in touch with Shukla. BJP leader and Union minister Babul Supriyo urged Shukla to leave the TMC and join the BJP. State Congress president Adhir Ranjan Choudhury claimed the TMC is collapsing and Banerjee does not know how to prevent it. “We will not ask Shukla to join the party. But our door is open for those who want to be part of the Congress family, those who can’t be with the BJP for ideological reasons,” said Choudhury who is also the leader of the Congress in Lok Sabha. Kolkata, Jan 5 (PTI): The ruling Trinamool Congress on Tuesday said that the resignation of Laxmi Ratan Shukla as West Bengal minister of state for youth services and sports is unfortunate but it will not affect the party, while the BJP said that the former cricketer is welcome to join the saffron camp. Shukla’s resignation came months before the assembly election in the state and almost a fortnight after transport minister Suvendu Adhikari left the party and joined the BJP. The Congress claimed that TMC is collapsing and party supremo and state Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has no remedy for it, while the CPI(M) asked her to explain why the state’s ministers one after another are losing faith in her. “Mamata Baner jee had given Shukla due respect and even made him a minister. He was inducted as part of our policy to give prominence to people from different walks of life. MUMBAI, JAN 5 (PTI): Equity benchmark Sensex defied gravity for the 10th straight session to close at a fresh lifetime high on Tuesday as robust buying in financial and IT stocks offset lacklustre global cues. Persistent foreign fund inflows supported the benchmarks, though a weakening rupee capped the gains, traders said. Despite opening on a negative note, the 30-share BSE index pared all losses and staged a smart recovery to end 260.98 points or 0.54 per cent higher at 48,437.78. It touched an all-time high of 48,486.24 during the day. The Sensex has closed at record highs for seven sessions on the trot. The broader NSE Nifty rose 66.60 points or 0.47 per cent to settle at a new peak of 14,199.50. It scaled a record intra-day high of 14,215.60. cut reliance on imports for meeting oil needs as well as reduce carbon emissions. Also, the focus on renewable energy by using abundant energy from the sun and wind to generate electricity and promoting the use of battery-operated electric vehicles will help India meet its COP-21 commitments for cutting carbon emissions. The Prime Minister said the government is working with a vision to connect the entire nation with one-pipeline grid that will help improve clean energy access as well as also aid in the development of city gas projects. The new pipeline inaugurated on Tuesday is part of that plan, he said. This new line will help take the fuel to industries such as petrochemical plants
MUMBAI, JAN 5 (PTI): The rupee depreciated by 15 paise to settle at 73.17 against the US dollar on Tuesday, in tandem with most Asian currencies as fresh lockdowns in Europe and rising geopolitical tensions in the Middle East sapped risk appetite. However, unabated foreign fund inflows and weakness of the American currency in the overseas market restricted the rupee’s fall, forex dealers said. At the interbank forex market, the domestic unit opened flat at 73.02 against the greenback. It swung between a low of 73.27 and a high of 73.02 during the session. It finally settled at 73.17, down 15 paise against its previous close. On Monday, the rupee had appreciated by 9 paise to close at a four-month high of 73.02. Meanwhile, the dollar index, which gauges the greenback’s strength against a basket of six currencies, fell 0.19 per cent to 89.69. As much as 58 per cent of all energy consumed in the country currently comes from coal while petroleum and other liquids make up for 26 per cent of the energy basket. The abundant availability of LPG has ensured that states are no longer fighting for raising the kerosene quota and are instead declaring themselves kerosene-free. “We are working to provide clean, affordable and sustainable energy,” he said. Modi said his government’s integrated approach to energy planning has bought various reforms across the oil and gas sector, covering exploration and production and natural gas marketing and distribution. “We plan to achieve one nation one grid. We also want to shift to the gas-based economy,” he said adding crores of rupees will be invested in the oil and gas sector this decade in raising the share of natural gas in the energy basket.

It will also help a 5 million tonnes a year liquefied natural gas (LNG) import terminal at Kochi to achieve full capacity. The terminal has been operating at less than 10 per cent of the capacity for last few years as there was no pipeline to take the gas to users. Outlining the work done by his government in the energy sector, Modi said 900 CNG stations were set up till 2014 from the advent of CNG as fuel for automobiles in the country around 1992. In the last six years, the number of CNG stations has gone up to 1,500 and the target is to take them to 10,000, he said. Also, 25 lakh households had piped natural gas connections for using the fuel for cooking purposes till 2014 which has risen to 72 lakh now, he said adding the new pipeline would help add 700 CNG stations and provide 21 lakh piped cooking gas connections in Kerala and Karnataka.

NEW DELHI, JAN 5 (PTI): Enunciating his energy roadmap, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday said the share of natural gas in India’s energy basket will be more than doubled, energy sources diversified and the nation will be connected with one gas pipeline grid to help bring affordable fuel to people and industry. Inaugurating a 450-km natural gas pipeline between Kochi in Kerala to Mangaluru in Karnataka, he said India under his government is seeing unprecedented work on highways, railway, metro, air, water, digital and gas connectivity which will aid economic development. The government has an “integrated approach to energy planning. Our energy agenda is all-inclusive,” he said. While on the one hand, the natural gas pipeline network is being doubled to about 32,000 km in 5-6 years, on the other, work on the world’s biggest hybrid renewable plant combining wind and solar power has started in Gujarat. HANOI, Jan 5 (Reuters): A court in Vietnam on Tuesday sentenced three freelance journalists known for their criticism of government to between 11 and 15 years in prison, after finding them guilty of spreading anti-state propaganda. P h a m C h i D u n g, Nguyen Tuong Thuy and Le Huu Minh Tuan were convicted of “making, storing, spreading information, materials, items for the purpose of opposing the state” at a one-day trial in Ho Chi Minh City, the Ministry of Public Security said. Dung established the Independent Journalists Association of Vietnam in 2014, which police said had sought regime change.
D e s p i t e swe e p i n g economic reform and increasing openness to social change, Vietnam’s ruling Communist Party retains tight media censorship and tolerates little criticism. The party, under the leadership of 76-year-old Nguyen Phu Trong, has intensified a crackdown on dissent ahead of its fiveyearly congress due to be held later this month. Dung was jailed for 15 years and Thuy and Tuan 11 years each. Reuters could not immediately reach their lawyers for comment. They wrote stories to “distort and defame the people’s administration, infringe the interests of the Communist Party of Viet-
nam and state,” the ministry said in a statement. “These are especially dangerous activities that if not stopped could hurt national security,” it said. Amnesty International said the verdict underscored the government’s contempt for free media, particularly ahead of the congress. “Even by its own deeply repressive standards, the severity of the sentences show the depths being reached by Vietnam’s censors,” said its deputy regional director, Emerlynne Gil. Ahead of the trial, Phil Robertson, deputy Asia director at Human Rights Watch, called the charges “bogus”.
looking to turn out supporters in major urban areas, particularly the suburbs of Atlanta. The issue of long lines of voters could be more of a problem for them. For the Republicans, getting out voters on the day is even more crucial, and they will be looking to the stronghold of north Georgia, as well as rural areas and smaller towns. When will we know the result? You’d be brave to give a time. There were two recounts before Joe Biden was declared the winner over Donald Trump in November’s presidential poll. Generally, results come in quickly but if these races are close, it could be days. Mr Perdue nearly won first time out against Mr Ossoff in November, falling just short of the needed majority with 49.7%. The other seat had more candidates, with Mr Warnock recording 32.9% to Ms Loeffler’s 25.9%. A Democrat has not won a Senate race in Georgia in 20 years, but the party will be buoyed by Mr Biden’s presidential election win over Mr Trump there. Mr Biden’s margin of victory was about 12,000 votes among five million cast.
Iran’s 20% enriched uranium products ready Tehran, Jan 5 (IANS): An official of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI) announced on Tuesday that the country has produced its first product a few hours after restarting the enrichment of uranium up to a purity level of 20 per cent at the Fordow nuclear facility. “The process of producing 20 per cent enriched uranium took more than 24 hours, but with new technologies this time it has now been reduced to 12 hours,” Xinhua news agency quoted AEOI spokesman Behrouz Kamalvandi as saying. The process bena after informing inspectors from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the spokesman said. “Obtaining of 20 per cent enrichment is underway in two cascades” at the Fordow facility, he added. The 20 per cent uranium enrichment process was launched on Monday as part of Iran’s Strategic Action Plan to Counter Sanctions which was approved by Parliament in December 2020, according to Kamalvandi. He noted that this action was taken in order to protect the rights of the Iranian people. “We have the ability to enrich uranium above 20 percent (purity) easily and we are considering it,” the spokesman added.

Joe Biden and Donald Trump
Washington, Jan 5 (PTI): US President-elect Joe Biden has blasted Donald Trump for seeking to overturn the November 3 election result, saying the outgoing president spends most of his time “whining and complaining” rather than doing “the work” of his office. Trump, a Republican, is yet to concede the elections and has filed several lawsuits challenging the presidential poll result that gave Biden, a Democrat the required Electoral College votes to be the 46th US President. Tr ump alleges that there was a massive voter fraud. Election officials and the media have said that
Islamabad, Jan 5 (PTI): Pakistan’s Supreme Court on Tuesday ordered the Evacuee Property Trust Board (EPTB) to start reconstruction of a centuryold Hindu temple that was vandalised and set on fire by a mob in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province last week, saying the attack has caused “international embarrassment” to the country. The apex court, which took notice of the attack and ordered the local authorities to appear before the court on January 5, also directed the board to submit in court details of all functional and non-functional temples and gurdwaras across Pakistan, Dawn newspaper reported. The attack on the temple in Terri village in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s (KP) Karak district on Wednesday by members of radical Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam party (Fazal ur Rehman group) drew strong condemnation from human rights activists and the minority Hindu community leaders. During the hearing on Tuesday, a three-member bench headed by Chief Justice Gulzar Ahmed also directed the EPTB to clear encroachments from temples across the country and take action against officials involved in the encroachments. Justice Ahmed said that the Karak incident had

caused “international embarrassment to Pakistan”. The EPTB is a statutory board that manages religious properties and shrines of Hindus and Sikhs who had migrated to India following the partition. Khyber Pakhtunkhwa chief secretary, police chief, and Dr Shoaib Suddle, the head of a commission on minorities’ rights, were also present during the hearing. Suddle, who visited the temple in Karak district and presented a comprehensive report in the case to the Supreme Court on Monday after it asked the one-man commission on the rights of minorities to probe the attack, told the court that the provincial EPTB “did not protect the shrine”, the paper said. Justice Ijazul Ahsan then questioned the police chief on how the attack could have happened when

there is no evidence to back his claims. He has also lost dozens of lawsuits. “The president spends more time whining and complaining than doing something about the problem. I don’t know why he still wants the job. He doesn’t want to do the work,” Biden said on Monday at a drivein election rally in Georgia where he sought support for two Democratic candidates. Runoff elections in Georgia will determine which party controls the Senate. “Do it for all of those who have given up so much. Think of all of those who have given up so much to secure that right. Biden, 78, was confirmed the winner of the presidential election by the Electoral College on December 14 after all 50 states officially certified the voting results. According to official results, Biden collected 306 electoral votes as opposed to 232 votes cast for Trump. To win the presidential election, the winner must get at least 270 out of the 538 Electoral College votes.

Last year, IANS in a major expose revealed how the US government agencies have been funding the Islamic charities linked to terror groups based in Pakistan and the Middle East through InterAction. InterAction’s Together Project involves the most controversial Islamic charities including Helping Hand for Relief & Development (HHRD), which works with the charitable and political wings of Lashkar-e-Taiba, the Pakistani terror outfit directed against India in Kashmir. The US Senate probe into World Vision and its ties with ISRA had been initiated in 2019 after the Middle East Forum’s Sam Westrop and Cliff Smith exposed the details through a series of articles published in 2018.
Islamabad, Jan 5 (IANS): Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan has said that the 11-party PDM opposition alliance poses no threat to his government. Addressing the meeting of his spokespersons on Monday, Khan said: “The PDM has almost lost and died its own death, so it is no more a threat to the government.” The Prime Minister also directed his spokespersons to give a “tough time” to the opposition in the media, Dawn news reported. Khan said that the Pa k i s t a n D e m o c r a t i c Movement’s (PDM) main agenda was to seek National Reconciliation Ordinance (NRO)-like concessions for its leaders. “PDM’s entire movement is aimed at getting an NRO, but I will not give them any relief,” he added. Talking about the opposition alliance holding rallies despite warnings amid the coronavirus pandemic, the premier said that the PDM tried to play with the lives of the people, The Express Tribune reported.

London, Jan 5 (Agencies): The US state of Georgia is going to the polls in a vote that will decide whether President-elect Joe Biden’s Democrats control the Senate. According to BBC, victory in the two runoff elections would give Mr Biden control over the whole of Congress and with it the power to push forward his progressive agenda. Mr Biden said Georgians could shape the US for years to come. Republican President Donald Trump told voters it was their “last chance to save the America that we love”. Republicans Kelly Loeffler and David Perdue currently hold the two Senate seats in the state. Ms Loeffler is taking on Reverend Raphael Warnock and Mr Perdue is battling Jon Ossoff. None of the candidates reached the 50% needed to win outright in the elections in November, forcing Tuesday’s runoffs under Georgia’s election rules. Voting begins at 07:00 (12:00 GMT). The vote will decide the balance of power in the US Senate. The Republicans cur-

there was a police check post next to the temple. “Where were your intelligence agencies?” the judge asked. The police chief told the court that a protest by the Jamiat Ulema-i-IslamFazl (JUI-F) was going on near the site on the day of the incident which was sponsored by Maulana Faizullah. “Out of the six ulema at the protest, only Maulvi Mohammad Sharif incited the crowd,” the police chief said. The official informed the court that 109 people involved in the attack were arrested while 92 police officials, including the superintendent of police (SP) and deputy superintendent of police (DSP) who were on duty at the time, were
suspended. Chief Justice Ahmed said that “suspension was not enough”. The judge also slammed the EPTB chairman, saying he should “not sit on the chairman’s seat with government mentality”. “Your employees are doing business on the land meant for shrines. Arrest them and start the reconstruction of the temple,” Justice Ahmed directed. “Money should be taken from Maulvi Sharif for reconstruction of the shrine,” the chief justice remarked. Justice Ahsan observed that the EPTB “has the money to construct its own buildings but does not have money for Hindus”. The bench directed that details of functional and non-functional shrines, records of disputes on EPTB lands and a report on the performance of the EPTB chairman be submitted to the court in two weeks. It also directed the KP branch of the EPTB to hold discussions with the provincial minorities commission, the paper said. The apex court said a detailed judgement would be released later and adjourned the hearing for two weeks.

Sharon shares her battle with COVID-19
O
n Monday’s episode of her talk show "The Talk", Sharon Osbour ne discussed her recent battle with COVID-19. "I'm feeling really fine now, except that I'm still very tired," she said, less than a month after she announced her positive coronavirus diagnosis. "I nod off at ridiculous times of the day. And I'm good. "I went through all the symptoms — headache, eye ache, body ache, dizziness, sickness; all of it," Ozzy Osbourne's wife and manager explained. "But
there's people who are much worse than I got it; they have it much worse. And I just think I came out very lucky. "By the way, I still can't smell very much or taste very much," Sharon added. When the Emmy-winning host of "The Talk" first revealed her positive diagnosis on December 14, she said she was hospitalized for the infectious disease for a short time and was isolating away from Ozzy, who had tested negative. In November, Ozzy told GQ magazine that he
suffers from a respiratory disease which puts him at an increased risk of severe pneumonia and poor outcomes if he was to develop COVID-19. Less than two months ago, Sharon announced that she was self-quarantining after being in contact with someone who tested positive for COVID-19. Just three months earlier, Sharon revealed that two of her and Ozzy's granddaughters, five-yearold Andy Rose and threeyear-old Minnie, had been infected with the novel coronavirus. At the time,

Sharon said that Minnie contracted the virus "from somebody who works for my son." She said her granddaughter's diagnosis "just goes to show you … that children can get COVID." In September, Ozzy said he won't have a coronavirus vaccine despite his Parkinson's disease putting him at greater risk. Speaking on Rock Classics Radio on Apple Music Hits, he said: "I'm trying to recover so I can get... The only good thing about this pandemic, I couldn't work anyway because of my injuries. I'm hoping that I'll be booking 2022, I think. Last July, Ozzy said that he was still "not back to 100 percent" after suffering from several medical issues last year, including a fall, neck surgery and hospitalization for the flu. Ozzy also said that he was looking forward to performing again once he has regained his health and the coronavirus pandemic has subsided. When the pandemic struck, Ozzy had just released his first solo album in a decade, "Ordinary Man", which he recorded in 2019 while recovering from surgery and related illnesses. The Black Sabbath singer had previously canceled all his 2019 tour plans, and the rescheduled 2020 shows were also scrapped. (Blabbermouth.net)
Olivia Wilde dating Harry Styles
O
livia Wilde appears to have fallen for her Don't Worry Darling co-star Harry Styles after attending a wedding as the pop star's date. The actress-turneddirector called off her engagement and ended her nine-year romance with comedy star Jason Sudeikis, the father of her two children, last year, and now she has seemingly moved on with Styles. The new couple was filmed together over the weekend, as Wilde accompanied the One Direction singer to his manager's wedding at the San Ysidro Ranch in Montecito, California, where Styles actually officiated the COVID-safe nuptials, with just 16 guests were in attendance. In video footage posted on the New York Post's Page Six site, the stars, both wearing face masks, are caught on camera walking and holding hands at the venue, while other images show Styles donning a white robe as he takes photos with the groom, Jeff Azoff, and his bride, Glenne Christiaansen. At 36, Wilde is 10 years older than Styles, but the pop hunk is known for his penchant for dating older women. He was last linked to 30-year-old model Camille Rowe in 2018, while he has also romanced Taylor Swift, 31, and tragic British presenter Caroline Flack, who died in February, 2020 at the age of 40. Hours after declaring her dead, Roberts' publicist Mike Pingel shared that she is still alive and continues to be in hospital, reports hollywoodreporter.com. "I did get confirmation (of her death), but that was from a very distraught person (Roberts' boyfriend, Lance O'Brien). And so yes, this morning at 10 a.m. ... the hospital did call to say that she was still alive but it's not looking good. We will hopefully have informa-

In the tightest game from Monday night’s fixtures, Malcolm Brogdon lofted home a 12-foot floater with 3.6 seconds of overtime remaining as the Indiana Pacers secured a 118116 win over New Orleans Pelicans. Victor Oladipo scored 25 points on the night as the Pacers moved third in the Eastern Conference with five wins and two defeats this season. The New York Knicks erased a 15-point thirdquarter deficit to win 113108 at the Atlanta Hawks. Julius Randle top-scored for the Knicks on 28 but a late three-pointer by Austin Rivers was key as they moved to four wins from seven games.
Southampton shock Liverpool 1-0
Danny Ings’ second minute strike was enough for three points to lift the Saints up to sixth.
London, Jan 5 (AP): Southampton manager Ralph Hasenhuttl slumped to the ground, pulled down the bill of his cap, and wept after another big win for his team in the English Premier League. On the receiving end this time was Liverpool, which also appears to be on its knees in what is shaping up to be the most open title races in years. Danny Ings, a former Liverpool player, scored in the second minute to lead Southampton to a 1-0 win over the defending champions at an empty St. Mary’s Stadium on Monday. Liverpool has gone three games without a win
— after back-to-back draws against West Bromwich Albion and Newcastle — and leads on only goal difference from great rival Manchester United, which has played one game fewer. United isn’t the only team in striking distance of the lead approaching the halfway point of the league. Four points separate Liverpool from seventh-place Everton, with 10th-place West Ham only seven points off the lead in what was always going to be a disjointed season amid the pandemic. Southampton is in the mix, too, its latest win lifting Hasenhuttl’s team to sixth place in a season when it has been top — albeit briefly —
Williamson’s double ton put NZ on top against Pak
Pele updates Instagram bio after Ronaldo breaks his record
Christchurch, Jan 5 (IANS): Captain Kane Williamson’s purple patch with the bat continued on Tuesday as he scored yet another double century to put New Zealand on the ascendency in the ongoing second and final Test against Pakistan at the Hagley Oval. Williamson’s 238, along with 157 from Henry Nicholls and unbeaten 102 from Daryl Mitchell, helped the Black Caps declare their first innings on 659/6 in reply to Pakistan’s 297 compiled on the first day of the Test match. Resuming the third day at 286/3, the hosts swelled up their lead as Williamson and Nicholls shared a mammoth 369-run partnership for the fourth wicket, during the course of which Williamson scored his fourth double ton while Nicholls reached his seventh hundred. However, the cherry on the top was the maiden Test hundred from Mitchell as he helped New Zealand take a 362-run lead.
for the first time since 1988. It all proved too much at the final whistle for the emotional Hasenhuttl, whose team was heavily depleted for the game. “When you see our guys fighting with everything they have, it makes me really proud,” the Austrian coach said. “You need to have the perfect game against Liverpool and I think we did have that. “It was an intense game, my voice is nearly gone. The guys are tired — you have to be to win against such a team. The guys believed in what they were doing.” Few could have foreseen this sudden drop-off by Liverpool, which has failed to score in
successive games for only the second time in Jurgen Klopp’s five-year tenure. Indeed, such has been Liverpool’s lack of cutting edge of late that Klopp’s team has managed just seven shots on target in the past three games. In the game before that, Liverpool beat Crystal Palace 7-0 away. “Our decision-making was just not good,” Klopp said. “That is how it is when you don’t have momentum. We should have had much more chances.” S o u t h a m p t o n wa s missing the spine of its team, with first-choice goalkeeper Alex McCarthy (coronavirus), central midfielder Oriol Romeu (hamstring) and striker Che Adams (concussion) joining giant center back Jannik Vestergaard on the injury list. But the Saints still had Ings, who latched onto a free kick by set-piece specialist James Ward-Prowse and lifted a bouncing ball over goalkeeper Alisson Becker and into the far corner. “We all know how good Prowsey is on setpieces, and all the parts came together and luckily I got the goal,” said Ings, who had an injury-plagued spell at Liverpool from 2015-18. “We had a chat before the game to see if there was a moment where we could get in quickly and luckily it paid off.”
There is a confusion surrounding how many goals Pele scored.
New Delhi, Jan 5 (Agencies): After Cristiano Ronaldo went past Pele in the list of most official goals ever scored, the Brazil legend updated his Instagram bio to cheekily dispute the record, claiming that he continues to be the ‘leading goal-scorer of all time.’ Ronaldo started 2021 with a bang as he scored twice during Juventus’ 4-1 victory over
Udinese. In doing so, he overtook Pele’s incredible goal scoring record of 757 strikes. Ronaldo has now notched 758 goals during his illustrious career and sits second in the all time goal scoring list, just one goal away from Josef Bican. It seemed only a matter of time before the former Manchester United and Real Madrid
star moved up in the charts, particularly after surpassing 40 goals (yet again) for a calendar year in 2020. Official figures are widely disputed but as far as the official tally goes, Pele stands third with 757 strikes. However, the 80year old reiterates that he in fact scored in excess of 1,200 times in his bio update, claiming to be the highest goal scorer of alltime. Pele updated his bio and under ‘3x World Cup Champion’, he added ‘Leading Goal Scorer of All Time (1,283).’ The records from the 80-yearold’s playing days aren’t as complete as they are today and there is particular uncertainty about his stats in South America. The goals reportedly include friendlies, tour matches and from his time in the army.

sports Rahul ruled out of last two Tests due to wrist injury Sydney, Jan 5 (IANS): Right-handed batsman KL Rahul has been ruled out of the remaining two Tests of the ongoing four-match series against Australia and will fly home after he sprained his left wrist while batting in the nets at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. A statement from the Indian cricket board (BCCI) on Tuesday said, “KL Rahul sprained his left wrist while batting in the nets at the MCG during Team India’s practice session on Saturday. The wicketkeeper-batsman will not be available for the remaining two Tests of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy as he will need about three weeks’ time to recover completely and regain full strength.” “He will now return to India and head to the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru for further rehabilitation of his injury,” the statement added. Though part of both the white ball and red ball squads, Rahul was kept on the bench for the first two Tests. He was likely to play the third Test starting Thursday, either in place of Mayank Agarwal as opener or instead of Hanuma Vihari in the middleorder. His injury comes as another blow for Team India who have already been weakened by the absence of pacers Mohammed Shami and Umesh Yadav and regular skipper Virat Kohli. While Shami and Umesh returned to India to recuperate from injuries they suffered during the ongoing Test series, Kohli returned home after first Test to attend the birth of his first child. The four-match series is currently tied at 1-1 with Australia winning the first Test in Adelaide while India registering a win in the second in Melbourne.
