Independent India to see first multiple execution Convicts have 14 days to use their final legal options Will be in separate cells, in solitary confinement Will be allowed one last meeting with their families

was no application pending before any court or the President right now by any of the convicts and the review petition of all the convicts was dismissed by the Supreme Court. While urging the court to issue the death warrants, the prosecution said, “In between issuance and execution of death warrants of the convicts want to file curative petitions they can do so.” The counsel for two of convicts - Mukesh and Vinay - said they were in the process of filing curative petition in the Supreme Court.

As the judge pronounced the order, the courtroom was packed and thick with emotion. Nirbhaya’s parents as well as family members of the convicts wept. The trial court had earlier directed Tihar jail authorities to seek within a week response from four death row convicts as to whether they were filing mercy pleas against their executions with the President of India. It was hearing the applications moved by Nirbhaya’s parents and the prosecution (Delhi government) seeking

issuance of death warrant against the convict. The 23-year-old paramedic student, referred to as Nirbhaya, was gang raped and brutally assaulted on the intervening night of December 16-17, 2012 inside a moving bus in south Delhi by six persons before being thrown out on the road. She died on December 29, 2012 at Mount Elizabeth Hospital in Singapore. One of the six accused, Ram Singh, allegedly committed suicide in the Tihar Jail. A juvenile, who was among the accused, was convicted by a juvenile justice board and was released from a reformation home after serving a three-year term. The convicts have 14 days to use their final legal options. They will be in separate cells, in solitary confinement, and will be allowed one last meeting with their families. Sources say the scaffold has been widened so all four can be hanged at the same time. Independent India would be seeing its first multiple execution with the four convicts due to be hanged in the gallows site in Jail No. 3 of the capital’s Tihar Jail complex on January 22.

Prepared to hang convicts: Hangman

Pawan Jallad

Pawan Jallad, the probable hangman for the four accused in the Nirbhaya gangrape and murder case, said he is ready to hang them. Jallad, a third-generation executioner at the Meerut Jail, had expressed his desire to hang the four accused. Speaking to Aajtak after the order was pronounced, Pawan Jallad said, “I am ready to hang them.” Elaborating on the procedure for the hanging, Jallad said, “I will reach Tihar Jail two-three days before the date. First, the gallows and the noose will be checked. Then their weight will be measured. Then we will conduct trials using sacks filled with sand a day or two before the hanging. They will be hanged till they don’t die.”

NPF yet to decide on Kenye’s fate

Correspondent

KOHIMA, JAN 7 (NPN): After a daylong meeting, NPF Central Executive Council (CEC) and central office bearers (COB) referred the matter of its Rajya Sabha member KG Kenye-- voting in favour of the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), to Disciplinary Action Committee (DAC) for further action. Speaking to a group of media persons at NPF central office here on Tuesday after the meeting, NPF president Dr Shürhozelie Liezietsu said the MP, who too was invited, explained his position and presented documents. Mentioning that Kenye had left the meeting after explaining his position, the NPF president said he had clarified the stand of the party as there were many misgivings because of the confusion created in Parliament. He said DAC would study the opinions expressed by CEC members COB and give its

recommendation for further course of action. On NPF’s Lok Sabha member from Outer Manipur Dr Lorho S Pfoze, Liezietsu said his case would be taken up another time yet as Lorho was frank enough and apologised. He however did not confirm whether Kenye too apologised. Meanwhile, Dr. Liezietsu said there was no point debating the merits and demerits of CAA as the real motive behind it and its nature was known to all, adding the House referred the matter to DAC. According to the NPF president, there should be no debate on the Act as it was passed purely on religious lines based on the theory of “one nation one religion”, and therefore Nagas must stand together with rest of the country who support secularism. He said India was called the largest democracy in the world, but CAA was a policy

of divide and would destroy democracy. Liezietsu said the Act was very dangerous for the whole country, adding Nagaland being a Christian State could not support RSS’s programme. Alleging that the main purpose of RSS was to suppress other religions so that it could make India a Hindu country, he pointed out that the organisation had openly declared this. He said though it might be difficult to fight such forces, nonetheless NPF would oppose RSS and CAA. Referring to the ‘missed call’ campaign launched by the State BJP, Liezietsu said such campaign would not work in Nagaland as CAA could not convince the Nagas. On whether NPF would field a candidate in 14 Southern Angami-1 and 60 Pungro Kiphire Assembly constituencies, if by-polls were announced, he said the matter was yet to be discussed.

DIMAPUR, JAN 7 (NPN): Dimapur district administration has categorically stated that unauthorized occupants and encroachers of the land allotted to Airports Authority of India (AAI) have no other option but to vacate the encroached plots. As per directive of the state government, the district administration had already asked illegal encroachers to leave the area by first week of January 2020. According to the district administration, there are around 20 to 22 families, all of whom will have to leave at the earliest, including the land presently occupied by Assam Rifles and CRPF. The district administration further maintained that the area was scanned as per the demand of AAI and that actions would be initiated at the earliest to evict the unauthorised occupants and land encroachers. As per reliable sources, initially 621.58 acres of land was acquired for Dimapur airport. However, a major portion was occupied by Assam Rifles (erstwhile ARTC),

CAA meant for promoting interest of one particular religion: NPF president DIMAPUR, JAN 7 (NPN): NPF president Dr Shurhozelie Liezietsu has challenged Nagas who had supported the controversial Citizenship (Amendment) Act to come out and declare their stand openly. Alleging that CAA indulged in politics of divide, Liezietsu said NPF did not want to act from behind the scene. And for the sake of “our future generations”, he asserted that his party would oppose the Act. He said people of the Northeast in general and the Nagas in particular must understand the true colour of CAA, along with its long-term impact. Mentioning that those who had supported and passed CAA in both Houses of Parliament recently could put forth many convincing points like exempting ILP States and Sixth Schedule areas and introducing ILP in Manipur, which all might sound good, the NPF president however termed all this as a “cover-up” of the real motive of the Act. He warned the impact of CAA would be felt very slowly in the form of “population politics”. (Full text on p-6)

some by CRPF and some portion were left unfenced, even as around 34.67 acres was encroached towards Chathe river. Of the total of 621.58-acre land allotted only 277 acres remained. According to a cabinet memo made available to Nagaland Post, the cabinet at its meeting on December 9,2019 deliberated on the issue in the backdrop of a committee headed by commissioner Nagaland inquiring the matter of issuing of patta/land allotment to private individuals in airport land as there was rampant land encroachment. Accordingly, the committee examined all relevant papers and records available, besides conducting physical inspection of the airport land along with AAI officials. Subsequently, the DC Dimapur summoned the pattadars/allottees as well as government officials to record their statements. The cabinet memo stated that the committee observed some anomalies like allotment of land under dag no. 97 at Ekrani Pathar that was supposed to be Chathe riverbed, but the allottee had

occupied dag nos 38 and 40 at Diphupar, which was government acquired-land for airport. The cabinet memo added that the same land was further mutated to 22 pattas, and now there are at least four concrete structures, while the rest was temporary structures at the encroached land. Accordingly, during the meeting on December 9, the cabinet had approved eviction of the illegal occupation of airport land so that developmental activities could be carried out. It has been learnt that the district administration would now seek to reclaim the encroached land for expansion and infrastructure development of Dimapur airport, as it had been deprived of the land required for the purpose leading to it being downgraded to the level where it has remained for the past 30 years. DC Dimapur, Anoop Khinchi on December 22 last informed Nagaland Post that the administration had already warned that failure by the illegal encroachers to leave the area within the stipulated time would invite punitive action as per the law.

Trade unions nation-wide strike today; banking, transport to be hit NEW DELHI, JAN 7 (PTI): Banking, transport and other services across the country are likely to be hit as trade unions have called a nationwide strike to protest against the government’s “anti-people” policies on Wednesday. Nearly 25 crore people are said to be taking part in the all-India strike. Ten central trade unions like INTUC, AITUC, HMS, CITU, AIUTUC, TUCC, SEWA, AICCTU, LPF, UTUC along with various sectoral independent federations and associations had adopted a declaration in September last to go on a nationwide strike on January 8. Several banks have already informed stock exchanges about the Wednesday strike and its impact on banking services. Various bank employee associations, including AIBEA, All India Bank Officers’ Association (AIBOA), BEFI, INBEF, INBOC and Bank Karmachari Sena Mahasangh (BKSM), have expressed their willingness to participate in the strike. Banking services like deposit and withdrawal, cheque

clearing and instrument issuance are expected to be impacted due to the strike. However, services at private sector banks are unlikely to be impacted. Other than banking, transport and other key services are also likely to be disrupted in many states due to this nationwide strike call. Govt tells PSUs to dissuade employees: Central government has asked public sector undertakings to dissuade their employees from participating in the ‘Bharat Bandh’ called on Wednesday and advised them to prepare a contingency plan to ensure the smooth functioning of the enterprises. “Any employee going on strike in any form, including protest, would face the consequences which, besides deduction of wages, may also include appropriate disciplinary action,” said an office memorandum issued by the government. “Suitable contingency plan may also be worked out to carry out the various functions of the ministry/department,” it added.

Centre offers imported onions to states JNU: Row over FIRs filed on night of mob attack Stuck with stocks, Govt wants to sell them at landed cost Spl. Correspondent

NEW DELHI, JAN 7 (NPN): The central government has decided to offer onions to state governments at the landing price in Mumbai ranging from Rs. 49 to Rs. 58 per kilogram, said union minister of consumer affairs, food and public distribution Ram Vilas Paswan, who held a press conference Tuesday to brief media about the overall availability and prices of Onions across the nation along with the imported quantities so far. The union minister said that imports began from mid-December and states were asked to place

their firm demand in order to get the supply from the imported stock. States had initially put a demand for 33,139 MT of onions which was later revised to 14,309 MT due to various reasons including reduction in domestic prices and improved availability. He stated that 1 Lakh MT of Onions was the target. However, since the Onion growing season had ended across the world and international prices were high, Pasawn said orders were placed strategically in small lots and over a period of time to ensure international prices did not increase drastically. The Centre had planned the imports based on the initial demand and has already contracted almost 40,000 MT of Onions which would arrive in India before the end of January, he said.

So far, the union minister said 12,000 MT of Onions have arrived in the country and was ready for distribution among the state governments. Further, Paswan said that the main concern was to protect the interest of consumers and for ensuring that, the domestic supply was being augmented with imports so that prices were moderated and overall availability was increased. He said that there has to be a coordinated effort between the central and state governments and the consumers to ensure this objective was achieved. The union minister has, therefore, urged all state governments to honour the demands they had placed initially and may even go beyond their initial demand and distribute the imported onions in their respective

states to ensure that prices were moderated. The consumer affairs secretary, Avinash Srivastava, informed the media that the cabinet secretary held a video conference Tuesday morning to persuade state governments to buy more onions from the imported stock for direct retailing/ distribution in the state to increase overall availability and reduce prices. He said that December onwards, the prices had begun coming down which led the state governments to also reduce their respective demands. The cabinet secretary in the VC with 12 States including Assam, Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Haryana, Kerala, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu asked the states to honour the initial demand and pick up more from the imported stock if needed in order to curb prices.

NEW DELHI, JAN 7 (PTI): Two days after the mob attack in JNU, no arrests have been made by the Delhi police which received more flak on Tuesday from opposition parties and student groups as it came to light that twin FIRs were filed on the night of the campus violence based on the varsity’s previous vandalism complaints naming injured students union president Aishe Ghosh and others. Protests continued against the attack at the JNU, with the students union alleging that the FIRs showed the varsity administration was colluding with the RSS-backed Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP). Left-affiliated student groups and ABVP have blamed each other for the violence. The Opposition too questioned the filing of FIRs and slammed the police,

with Congress saying “40 hours since the violent attacks in JNU and the Delhi Police has failed to arrest a single perpetrator, despite the glaring evidence.” “Is the police so incompetent under Amit Shah? Instead they file an FIR against a victim of the attack. Disgraceful (sic),” the party said. The two FIRs were registered by Delhi Police on the night of January 5, within a span of few minutes, after taking cognisance of complaints filed by JNU authorities naming office bearers of student union including Ghosh and JNUSU Vice President Saket Moon in connection with alleged vandalism on premises on January 1 and 4. The general diary reference in police records showed the FIRs were registered at 8.44 p.m. and 8.49 p.m. on complaints

filed by the varsity’s security department on January 3 and January 4 respectively. These were related to alleged incidents of vandalism on January 1 and January 4 respectively. Moon alleged that the administration is selectively targeting some students and denied their involvement in the vandalism of server room. Oppn meet on Jan 13: Top leaders of opposition parties, including the Congress, are likely to meet on January 13 to discuss the situation arising out of violence on various university campuses and protests in the country over the Citizenship Amendment Act. According to sources, the Congress is convening a meeting of senior opposition leaders next Monday in Parliament House annexe to chalk out a joint strategy in the wake of violence on campuses. Tripura royal family loses Neermahal AGA RTALA, JAN 7 (AGENCIES): The royal family of Tripura has lost Neermahal dispute in the High Court on Monday. The high court has given the verdict that the Neermahal is not the property of the royal family, reports Northeast Now. The State Government has the right on the six acre land of Neermahal and its surroundings. It is notable that, Rajmata Bibhu Kumari Devi filed a petition and claimed that the land of Neermahal is the property of the royal family and they want its possession. Advocate General Arun Kanti Bhowmik said fomer King of Tripura Lt Kirit Bikram Manikya’s personal property at Melaghar’s Neermahal made with six acre of land including the lake and Neermahal was handed over to Tripura Governmnet in 1974 totally. While Kirit Bikram Manikya passed away in 2008, his wife Bibhu Devi filed a petition challenging the government and claimed that the land was never handed over fully. It was demanded that the property was only given as order to use and thus government has to return the land and also the profit made from it, said advocate general Arun Kanti Bhowmik. In the lower court the case was won by Bibhu Devi in 2015. After that the State Government challenged the lower court verdict in Tripura High

Court. On Monday, a division bench comprising chief justice A A Kureshi and justice Arindam Loadh of Tripura High Court pronounced the verdict. They were of the opinion that this land totally belongs to the government of Tripura and thus the government can use it for the development of the people. Speaking to Northeast Now after the verdict, royal scion Pradyot Kishore Debbarma said, “I challenge the government to provide one legal document to suggest that my father ‘gifted’ Neermahal to them.” “Also I am glad that finally the State Government has admitted that no money was ever paid for Neermahal to my father or my family,” he added. “I will challenge the matter in Supreme Court, but I must ask one question to all if the erstwhile royal family cannot protect their private property then what hope does a poor person has,” he questioned. “Crores have been spent on legal cases, my father is no longer with me and my mother

is 75 years old… justice delayed is justice denied. I will not compromise,” he asserted. Neermahal is a former royal palace built by Maharaja of Tripura Kingdom Bir Bikram Kishore Manikya Debbarma of the erstwhile Kingdom of Tripura. It was constructed in the middle of the lake Twijilikma in 1930 and was completed by 1938. It is situated in Melaghar, 53 kilometers away from Agartala, the capital of

Tripura. The palace is the largest of its kind in India and the only one in eastern India. It is so huge, it cannot be fit into a single picture frame on the standard camera until one is at a distance of approximately 800 metres from the entrance. There are only two water palaces in India, the other one being the Jal Mahal in Rajasthan. However, the latter is significantly smaller in size than Neermahal.

Assam claims over 3 lakh ‘ghost children’ in govt schools

GUWAHATI, JAN 7 (AGENCIES): There are over three lakh ‘ghost children’ in government schools in Assam who were registered during the erstwhile Congress government in the state for embezzling public money, an official release said on Monday, reports The Northeast Today. The figure of enrolled school students was 46,69,970 from class I to XII in the 2018-19 academic session, which is lower than 49,82,180 of 2016-17 session in government and provincialised schools, the release said. The erstwhile Congress government had showed these fake figures in government schools to embezzle public money sanctioned for text books, midday meals and uniforms of the non-existent students, it said. Chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal, who reviewed the Samagra Shiksha Abhiyan, was told that more than 3,12,000 were identified as ‘ghost children’, it said. BJP ally, tribal parties revive CAA stir in Tripura

Ag a r t a l a / N e w Delhi, Jan 7 (IANS/ PTI): Around 250 tribals belonging to various parties were arrested for “unlawful assembly” while protesting against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), here on Tuesday. Activists of the Indigenous People’s Front of Tripura (IPFT), a junior partner in the Bharatiya Janata Party-led government in the state, have started sit-in on Monday at Khumulwng, headquarters of the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC). The Joint Movement Against Citizenship (Amendment) Bill (JMACAB), a group of many tribal parties, led by the Indigenous Nationalist Party of Tripura (INPT), which called off the ant-CAA stir on December 11 after a meeting with Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb, resumed the protest and held a protest here on Tuesday. The JMACAB has been

demanding that Tripura and other northeastern states be kept out of the CAA purview. Animesh Debbarma, chief of the National Conference of Tripura (NCT), a part of the JMACAB, said 80 years ago the indigenous tribals were in majority. But they were now only one third of the state’s four million population, he said. “If the Bangladeshi refugees are given citizenship as per the CAA, the tribal population will be reduced further and their traditional life, culture and economy -- already under pressure -- would be endangered,” Debbarma, a former legislator, said. JMACAB convener Anthony Debbarma said after a meeting Union Home Minister Amit Shah on December 12, the group met the Chief Minister on December 18 and January 2, but nothing happened. “Shah assured another meeting within December. But even after a month,

we have not received any intimation from Delhi,” he said. The JMACAB and various tribal parties, including the tribal front of the Communist Party of India-Marxist, the Tripura Rajya Upajati Ganamukti Parishad (TRUGP), the state’s oldest tribal-based party, have been demanding that the northeast be kept out of the CAA. Tribal Welfare and Forest Minister and IPFT General Secretary Mevar Kumar Jamatia told IANS that they would continue the sit-in till the demands were met. The IPFT has also been demanding a separate state for tribals since 2009 by upgrading the TTAADC, and inclusion of “Kokborok”, the tribal language, into the 8th Schedule of the Constitution. The TTAADC has jurisdiction over two-thirds of Tripura’s 10,491 sq km area, home to over 12,16,000 people, mostly tribals.

NESO, AASU vow to continue stir The North East Students’ Organisation (NESO) and the All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) on Tuesday demanded scrapping of the contentious Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), saying they cannot allow “illegal Bangladeshis” to flood the region and rule over indigenous people. Addressing a press conference here, NESO and AASU advisor Samujjal Kumar Bhattacharya accused Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal of betraying the cause of the people of the state by supporting the newly enacted legislation. “The CAA is communal, unconstitutional and it violates the Constitution. We will continue our non-violent agitation against the new law till it is scrapped,” he said.

Bhattacharya said the CAA is a “ploy” of the Narendra Modi government to give citizenship to illegal immigrants. “We can’t allow illegal Bangladeshis to come, settle and rule over the people of Assam and the Northeast,” he said. Asked about the stand of Sonowal, his once comrade-in-arms, Bhattacharya claimed the chief minister has become “anti-indigenous people” and protecting the illegal Bangladeshis. “Sonowal is running a killer government. Innocent students were killed by his government. He has completely isolated himself,” he claimed. Bhattacharya asked Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah whether they will allow illegal Pakistanis to enter Gujarat through Indo-Pakistan border “the way they are allowing Bangladeshis to come to Assam”.

NE student bodies condemn JNU violence New Delhi, Jan 7 (PTI): North East Students’ Organisation (NESO) on Tuesday termed the recent violence at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) as “barbaric” and alleged that the central government has failed to protect the innocent students of the premier institute. Advisor, NESO Samujjal Kumar Bhattacharya also said Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah must take immediate steps to book those involved in the violence at JNU on Sunday. “It was a barbaric attack on the innocent students at JNU and we strongly condemn it. Such violence at an academic institution is unacceptable,” he said at a press conference here. Bhattacharya said students community of the Northeastern region was solidly behind the students of the JNU.

Shillong, Jan 7: Meghalaya Governor R.N. Ravi on Tuesday urged the church leaders to help consolidate the progressive forces in the society for the enduring good of the people of the state. He made this appeal in a two-day consultation meeting with church leaders and civil society organisations covering contemporary issues of the state. Anti-CAA protests set to intensify in Telangana

United Muslim Action Committee (UMAC), comprising All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM), Jamaat-e-Islami and others chalked out an action plan to organize a rally, a protest meeting and human chain in Hyderabad this month. The action plan was announced by Jamaat-eIslami Telangana unit chief Hamid Mohammed Khan at a news conference in the presence of AIMIM president and Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi, leaders of various groups and religious scholars. UMAC, which already oranised a massive protest meeting in Hyderabad and couple of towns in Telangana, announced that a

mass rally will be organized on January 10 to demand revocation of CAA, a halt to NPR and dropping proposed NRC. Tiranga Rally, to be attended by both men and women, will begin from historic Mir Alam Eidgah after Friday prayers and it will culminate at Shastripuram grounds. This is expected to be the second biggest protest rally against CAA in Hyderabad after January 4 aMillion March’’ attended by thousands of people. UMAC announced that to mark Mahatma Gandhi’’s death anniversary on January 30, a human chain will be formed from Bapu Ghat to Mohammedi Lines oil mill. Khan said this would be a silent protest. “These are not programmes of one party or people of one religion. This is to save the Constitution, the soul of country, to pay homage to founding fathers and to ensure that their legacy is not destroyed,” said Owaisi. On comments by BJP leaders that Muslims were using national flag and reciting national anthem due to CAA, the MP said they were belittling the protest. “It is a protest by all concerned citizens and not followers of a particular religion. It shows their arrogance and dictatorial attitude. They want to give it a communal colour.”

The Delhi government has made education and revamping government schools a priority as part of their governance framework.

Hindu Raksha Dal claims responsibility for JNU violence; police launch probe

Bhupendra Singh Tomar NEW DELHI, JAN 7 ( AGENCIES): Bhupendra Singh Tomar, alias Pinki Chowdhary, the head of fringe right-wing roup, Hindu Raksha Dal, on Tuesday claimed that members of his organisation were involved in the brawl inside JNU, which left at least 25 students injured, reports Hindustan Times. A day after a masked mob brutally assaulted JNU students inside the campus, a video was widely ciculatd on social media in which Tomar is seen taking responsibility of the attack. “JNU is a hub of communists and we won’t tolerate this. We have done this (attack) before also and we will do it

again. They malign our religion and our country. Their attitude is anti-national,” Tomar says in the roughly two-minute long video. When asked if he received a call from someone at the university or someone wanted him and his associates at the site, he told HT, “There was nothing special about that day. There was no SOS. We have been there before and we want that day as well.” Tomar, however, added that he personally was not present at JNU. “Hamare karyakarta they wahan (our workers were there), he claimed.” Police is yet to comment on the role of Tomar’s

outfit in Sunday’s ruckus, which has galnavised students across the country in support of JNU. Hindu Raksha Dal, a right-wing nationalist outfit based in Ghaziabad, has a history of indulging in violent protests over issues which it considers ‘antinational.’ Tomar, who is in his late 40s, was the president of the Bajrang Dal’s Ghaziabad unit and worked with the RSS in different capacities for more than a decade before floating the Hindu Raksha Dal in 2013. “When there is a need to fight, we will fight. This is the fundamental difference between our organisation and traditional bodies,” he had told HT in an interview in October 2015. Till Tuesday night, no separate FIR was registered had been registered in connection with the claims made by Tomar. “We are investigating to find out if his men were on the campus at the time of the violence,” said Delhi Police spokesperson Mandeep Singh Randhawa.

Trump, Modi discuss ways to bolster US-India strategic ties

Washington/New Delhi, Jan 7 (PTI): President Donald Trump and Prime Minister Narendra Modi have discussed ways to further strengthen the US-India strategic partnership and reviewed “regional security matters”, the White House has said. The telephonic conversation between President Trump and Prime Minister Modi came in the backdrop of escalating tensions in the Gulf region after the US killed top Iranian commander General Qasem Soleimani in a drone strike in the Iraqi capital, Baghdad. Monday’s telephonic call was the first contact between the two leaders in the New Year and possibly the first for President Trump with an international leader on his return to the White House after his year-end vacation at his resort in Mara-Lago in Florida. While in Florida, Trump authorised the drone strike on the commander of Iran’s powerful Revolutionary Guards General Soleimani on Friday, killing him on the spot. “Today, President Donald J. Trump spoke with

Prime Minister Narendra Modi of India to exchange New Year’s greetings,” the White House said in a readout of the call between the two leaders on Monday. “The leaders discussed ways to further strengthen the United States-India strategic partnership in 2020, and they also reviewed the regional security matters,” the White House said. In its readout, the White House did not elaborate the “regional security matters” discussed by the two leaders. The conversation between Trump and Modi came a day after External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Sunday held a telephonic talk with US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and voiced India’s concerns over the escalating tensions in the Gulf region after the killing of Soleimani, the head of Iran’s elite al-Quds force. Observers say it would not be a surprise if the latest developments in Iran did not figure during the telephonic conversation between the two leaders as it was the first phone call between Prime Minister Modi and Presi-

dent Trump after the killing of Soleimani. The US action has resulted in an unprecedented escalation of tension between Washington and Tehran as well as heightened international concern and rattled global financial markets. In New Delhi, the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) said in a statement on Tuesday that Prime Minister Modi spoke with

US President Trump and expressed his desire to continue to work with him to enhance cooperation in areas of mutual interest. Modi conveyed his New Year greetings to the US president, the statement said. During the conversation, the prime minister noted that India-US relations, which are built on trust, mutual respect and understanding, “have grown

from strength to strength”, it said. Modi highlighted the significant progress made in deepening the strategic partnership between India and the US in the previous year and expressed his desire to continue to work with President Trump for enhancing cooperation in all areas of mutual interest, the statement said. P r e s i d e n t Tr u m p wished the people of India prosperity and progress in the New Year. He expressed satisfaction at the achievements in the relationship in the last few years and reiterated his readiness for further deepening bilateral cooperation, according to the statement. Reacting to the killing of Soleimani, India on Friday said the increase in tension has alarmed the world and asserted that peace, stability and security in the region is of utmost importance to it.

ed that neither Tamil Nadu nor Karnataka implemented this amendment yet. He argued that in Tamil Nadu, all political parties have opposed it. In the affidavit, the Department of Social Justice and Empowerment contended that the reason behind the Constitutional amendment was to promote social equality by providing opportunities in higher education and employment to the weaker sections of the society, which have been excluded by virtue of their economic status. The Bill was passed by the Lok Sabha on January 8, 2019, and by the Rajya Sabha on January 9, 2019. On January 12, 2019, the President gave his assent on it. The Act was notified by the Law Ministry as the Constitution (103rd Amendment) Act, 2019. Mani’’s plea said that the Amendment Act prescribed a maximum limit of 10 per cent reservation to EWS in addition to the existing reservation to SC/ ST/BC/OBC/MBC or any other category. Therefore, it nowhere affected or infringed anybody’’s fundamental rights to equality; rather it gave rights of equal participation and representation to the EWS.

New Delhi, Jan 7 (IANS): The Centre on Tuesday informed the Supreme Court that it has no role in deciding the reservation policy of any state government, although the Constitution Act, 2019 passed by the Parliament enabled both Centre and the states to provide reservation to the Economically Weaker Sections of the society. The Centre in an affidavit filed in the apex court said, “Whether or not to provide reservation to the Economically Weaker Sections (EWS) of the society for appointment in state government jobs and for admission to state government educational institutions, as per the provisions of the newly inserted Articles 15(6) and 16(6) of the Constitution, is to be decided by the concerned state government.” The Centre filed the response after the apex court had in August last year issued a notice to it on a PIL filed by advocate G.S. Mani seeking direction to Karnataka and Tamil Nadu to implement 10 per cent quota in jobs and education for EWS of the society as per the mandate of the 103rd Constitutional (Amendment) Act, 2019. Trump’s card

or sometime, it appeared that US president Donald Trump would find the going very though in a bid to get re-elected in the November 3,2020 US presidential election. Trump has never been a popular president of the people. He gets support from the right wing section in America. Trump appears to be turning a largely negative rating into a surge especially after his stocks went high following his decision to authorise a drone strike that killed Iran’s most powerful military commander has seen tensions between the two nations escalate. The killing of Gen. Qasem Soleimani, one of the most well known in Iran and the wider region, is an audacious and unexpected move that marks a major escalation in tensions between Washington and Tehran. The attack could be traced back to Trump’s decision to withdraw from the US-Iran nuclear deal. It also came just hours after the Pentagon issued a strong warning to Iran-backed militias amid concerns they may conduct further provocations against the US following their attempt to storm the US embassy in Baghdad. It was inevitable that the fallout from the US airstrike that killed Iranian General Qasem Soleimani would spill into presidential politics. Everything spills into presidential politics these days, and this is without a doubt a major story. If it was the Democratic Party’s determination to impeach Trump, which has only made him more popular, the drone attack has also served to appear “decisive” and a risk taker. The Republican Party if it stands united can stymie the efforts of the Democratic Party to offset Trump’s re-election bid. According to a latest poll, 83% of Republicans say they approve the drone strike. On social media, a common Trumpian response for those expressing concerns about the consequences of the Soleimani strike is “sorry for your loss.” This is quite similar to the response in India that those who oppose Modi should go to Pakistan. Donald Trump does not have a long term strategy but acts on the need of the hour and by instinct. While Qasem Soleimani was seen by the Americans as a key adversary involved in plotting attacks against their allies and assets, it is important to remember the role both he and Iran played in the fight against ISIS. While US aircraft, special forces and local allies fought ISIS in Syria, as well as in Iraq, Iranian-backed militia also pushed the terror group back in Iraq. The new and heightened tension in the middle east is only going to benefit Russia which is openly backing Iran and Syria in the region. Probably Trump may have relied on his hunch that by killing Soleimani, it would create a rally-effect among voters in his favour. This was the same effect that worked in favour of then US president George HW Bush during the 1991 Gulf War. However Bush could not win re-election in 1992 despite the rally effect because his rival Bill Clinton focussed on the economy and domestic affairs. Trump’s win in the 2016 US elections was linked to Russian meddling. This time, he hopes the Iran connection would help. Whether Trump exploits the drone killing remains to be seen since election is still around ten months and that itself is a very long time. The US voters will surely weigh all of these when they go to the polls.

DailyDevotion Intimate With Jesus

Jesus said to him, “Have I been with you so long, and yet you have not known Me, Philip?” —John 14:9 These words were not spoken as a rebuke, nor even with surprise; Jesus was encouraging Philip to draw closer. Yet the last person we get intimate with is Jesus. Before Pentecost the disciples knew Jesus as the One who gave them power to conquer demons and to bring about a revival (see Luke 10:18-20). It was a wonderful intimacy, but there was a much closer intimacy to come: “…I have called you friends…” (John 15:15). True friendship is rare on earth. It means identifying with someone in thought, heart, and spirit. The whole experience of life is designed to enable us to enter into this closest relationship with Jesus Christ. We receive His blessings and know His Word, but do we really know Him? Jesus said, “It is to your advantage that I go away…” (John 16:7). He left that relationship to lead them even closer. It is a joy to Jesus when a disciple takes time to walk more intimately with Him. The bearing of fruit is always shown in Scripture to be the visible result of an intimate relationship with Jesus Christ (see John 15:1-4). Once we get intimate with Jesus we are never lonely and we never lack for understanding or compassion. We can continually pour out our hearts to Him without being perceived as overly emotional or pitiful. The Christian who is truly intimate with Jesus will never draw attention to himself but will only show the evidence of a life where Jesus is completely in control. This is the outcome of allowing Jesus to satisfy every area of life to its depth. The picture resulting from such a life is that of the strong, calm balance that our Lord gives to those who are intimate with Him.

JNU: The attack and the resistance

ecent months have s e e n u n i ve r s i t y campuses become the nerve centres of democratic political life and scenes of resistance against authoritarianism and brutal police repression. The horrifying events that unraveled on Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) campus on Sunday night were a part of this, but they also showed some important differences. This time, it was not uniformed policemen who entered JNU to unleash an assault, but “masked” goons wielding lathis and iron rods who conducted a well-planned, targeted, brisk and brutal attack on the students and teachers. The police, which has detained protesting students by the hundreds in recent weeks, showed its complicity in the violence by its inaction, not intercepting or detaining even a single assaulter. The university administration, which has been quick to take punitive action against minor acts of peaceful protest by students and teach-

ers, issued statements that misrepresented the events and failed to even so much as mention the entry of armed groups into the campus. This is the situation that JNU finds itself in today— structures that have been designed to protect the life of this academic institution have turned against its community of students and teachers. The university’s administration, the state’s police force, and groups trained for violence by the ruling party appear be part of this destructive campaign. Students in JNU have been agitating over the past two months against a hefty and arbitrary hike in hostel fees sprung on them midsemester, which threatened to make staying on in the university unviable for many. What was striking about this agitation has been the intense involvement of large numbers of students who do not usually play an active role in student organisations and campus politics. The fee hike, by its evident

unfairness, seems to have touched something deep in the moral sensitivity of students, linking it to the vital issue of affordable public education in India. Perhaps it was not just the increase in fees that elicited this intense response. It was also the high-handedness of university administration, which over the past four years ever since the present vice-chancellor was appointed, has refused to work as part of the university community, resorting to arbitrary or politicallymotivated decisions and punitive measures, instead of consultation and collective decision-making. The recent crisis around the registration of students for the new semester must be seen against this background. The administration has dealt with this through denial and by painting a false picture of the situation. The past few days saw the introduction of violence into the campus as a new instrument for dealing with student pro-

tests. Protesting students have been alleging physical assaults by security guards and Akhil Bharatiya Vidhyarthi Parishad (ABVP) students, supported in certain instances by some teachers. Images and videos show this violence, which, in some cases, has involved physically threatening teachers who have insisted on a resolution to the present crisis through dialogue. This spate of violence culminated in Sunday’s vicious attack by an organised gang with lathis and iron rods on a large gathering on peace and democracy organised by JNU Teachers’ Association, in which several teachers and students were badly injured. They moved on to some hostels and teachers’ residences in order to attack. Several students and teachers have been badly injured in this attack and about 20 people had to be admitted to hospitals. This was followed by the mobilisation of crowds at the university’s main gate shouting aggressive, blood-

thirsty slogans against the JNU community, and roughing up people who do not share their views. The non-violent unity and resolve of students and teachers in the face of this aggression, and the support they received from the academic community and civil society in the city, eventually forced the goons to leave and the hostile crowd to withdraw from the gate. The alleged connivance of the administration with the violence has made the campus unsafe for academic work. It is evident that what is at issue in Sunday’s violence is neither the fee hike nor the registration for the new semester. This a planned attack on the vital role students have played in recent protests against the violent, antidemocratic agenda of the government and the ruling party. We have seen this in Jamia Millia, Aligarh Muslim University, Jadavpur University and several other campuses. Students — pushed to the brink by an unprecedented sense

of oppression and the rule of untruth and hatefulness — have adopted a staunch stance of refusal and created a new politics unanticipated by the ruling political calculus. Terms such as “anti-national” do not seem to do the work of hatred effectively anymore. Students are now reclaiming the national flag and the national anthem from divisive politics, not as insignia of the state, but as symbols of freedom and resistance. The Constitution has acquired a new political salience. What we saw in the recent violence is a desperate last-ditch throwing away of all rule books and pretences, and an attempt to destroy the spirit of resistance through violent physical force in all its ugly nakedness. At stake in the confrontations in JNU and other campuses are no less than our democratic futures being freshly forged by students. Budget 2020 expectations of Indian mustard oil industry I ndia has emerged as the largest importer of edible oil in the world. The country imported millions of tonnes of edible oil last year from October 2018 to November 2019, which is a record in itself. The nation’s dependence on imported oil is expected to reach alarming levels up to 60-65 per cent. India continues to remain an oil deficit country and imports millions of tonnes of edible oil each year to meet the demandsupply gap, making it the world’s largest importer of edible oils. Without a dedicated focus on and support for India’s own domestic oilseed production, it would be challenging to become self-reliant in the edible oil sector. There is an urgent need to have a vision and a plan for this industry. We need to learn from the oilseed producing countries and adopt their best practices, which in turn would enable us

T

to work towards doubling farm incomes by 2022. Mustard is one of the most important winter oilseed crops of country. The area under cultivation witnesses some fluctuations year-on-year and has been reported to have declined marginally by one per cent as compared to last year, although the yield has been reported to have increased marginally year-on-year. However, it is still lagging far, far behind the international standards. During the eighties, the Oilseeds Technology Mission was launched to raise the productivity of oilseed crops, with a view to reducing the import bill, which was nearly 50 per cent of our domestic requirement at that time, and in a span of 10 years after its launch, India became almost self-sufficient in edible oils, in 1993-94, with only three per cent imports, 97 per cent of edible oils were produced within

the country. However, over the years, the Oilseeds Technology Mission could not keep up with the times. The government of India should formulate a favourable policy for the indigenous edible oils sector which benefits farmers, consumers and manufacturers equally. The objective underlying the creation of the commodity exchanges in India was to benefit farmers. Unfortunately, since the majority of farmers do not transact through commodity exchanges, which was its prime objective, it has gone into the hands of speculators, which has artificially impacted the physical market. Hence, we require a regulator like SEBI, which can keep a watch on such malpractices. For some time now, Puri Oil Mills Limited has been recommending the establishment of a Mustard Oil Development Board

by the government. Largely, such a board can be modelled along the lines of the American Soybean Association or Spain’s International Olive Council that protects and promote the interests of olive and olive oil producers, or the Malaysian Palm Oil Board, established by the Malaysian government with the aim of promoting palm oil all over the world. The proposed Mustard Oil Development Board can play a pivotal role through research and development by developing value added products like the soya industry has done by developing soya protein, soya milk and soya nuggets, among others. Similarly, it can ensure an integrated approach to the development of the mustard industry by enhancing value addition across mustardbased products. To conclude, Mustard Oil is an integral part of Indian agri-

culture, cuisine and culture. Such is the sanctity of Indian mustard oil that even our ancient treatises, find a mention of mustard’s virtues as a valuable food crop and for its medicinal properties. The medical and scientific fraternity has been rediscovering the significant health benefits offered by mustard oil. A series of studies have shown that it is the best edible oil for heart health in India, given the dietary habits, lifestyles and culinary practices prevalent across the country. Therefore, mustard seed and Indian mustard oil does not just have economic relevance but is also an integral part of India’s rich culinary heritage. The Indian mustard oil industry hopes Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman will take note of this in the Union Budget for 2020-21. Vivek Puri (IANS)

Citizenship (Amendment) Act 2019

he People of the North East in general and the Nagas in particular must understand CAA of its true color with long term perspective look. Those who supported and passed the Bill in both Houses of Parliament recently may like to put forth so many convincing points like incorporation of ILP (BEFRA 1873) in the Act, exemption of Nagaland State, introduction of ILP in Manipur State etc. etc. It may sound good but all these are for cover up of the real motive behind this Act. When you bite a chilly, it burns the mouth and you feel the pain instantly. But that pain will not remain long when you drink or eat something again. But the effect of CAA on the people will be just opposite to the Corresponding effect of biting a chilly. It will come very slowly in the form of ‘population politics’. People will not feel the pain instantly; but the pain will develop with very low intensity and without much awareness for a long time but it will keep on increasing its impact, its intensity of pain year by year in due course of time. We know that people will not feel the effect in a year or two. It will burn your mouth only after 15, 20, years and slowly the

pain will spread all over your body with no medicine to cure. God forbid, it may uproot your very existence unless you take a strong stand today and go against it. Therefore, it will be of no use to argue over the merits and demerits of the Act at this juncture. The more important thing is how to check the danger which is looming over the horizon of our future. We are fully aware that this Act was brought in purely on religious line, a single track minded action to promote the interest of one particular religion, based on the theory of ‘one nation, one religion’. India is known as the largest democracy in the World. The greatness of India lies in ‘Unity in Diversity’. To destroy this unity in diversity is to destroy the greatness of India. It is most unfortunate that those people that be in power in Delhi today are destroying this very foundation of democracy and the greatness of India. We have seen that the Indians who stand for democracy and secularism are very much agitated today. In the same measure, Naga people are ashamed of what was done by some of her leaders in supporting this process of destroying democracy of the country. Look at the density of population in different areas

of the country. Almost the whole North East India is sparsely populated. The present population figure of Nagaland according to 2011 census is 19,78,502 only and the density of population is 119 per Sq.km. The population of Kolkata city alone in 2015 is 146,17,882, i.e. the population of a single city is more than seven times bigger than the population of Nagaland State. These figures are given only to demonstrate the actual comparative size of our population with no rancor towards any city. U.P. population is 1661,97,921 and obviously it cannot accommodate more people besides land problem they have been facing however big the State may be. On the whole, India is over populated and, therefore, the Govt. advocate family planning in order to stabilize her population but on the other hands CAA will open the floodgate for a particular religious community to enter India to add to the present over populated figure. But when big State like U.P, Bihar etc. do not have space to accommodate those people, where will these people go? Closed look at all these aspects will make us believe that North East will remain vulnerable; a real threat which we do not want our

children to face. CAA also indulges in ‘politics of divide’, I want to challenge the Nagas who supported this Act to come out and declare their stand openly. For NPF, we do not want to act from behind the screen and, therefore,

we take this stand that for the sake of our future generations, we will go against this CAA however small we may be. We do not want our children to become strangers in their own State. We want them to continue to be masters of their own

God’s given land. We do not want our children to sit by the rivers of Babylon and weep, unable to sing songs of Zion. We stand to support the ‘Secularism of the country’. Dr. Shürhozelie Liezietsu, President, Naga People’s Front

Why are people enraged over CAB?

Sir,

The issue on CAB has been brought on many times in this media, I would write only a few things on why people are indeed not satisfied with CAB. CAB is seen as a very opportunistic move to gather the vote of Hindu Bangladeshi by the BJP and its Hindu comrades. CAB has clearly misestimated the huge burden on the Indian economy and the system structure, social tides and political dividends that it would pose, due to unrestored original citizens’ rights and priorities that are already showing signs of deterioration. It is also concerning to note what kind of message we are trying to send to history. Given all the inputs, and more so on where it would entail. While some sectors are embroiling in raging burns due to heavy protests, some section of protesters have taken their stand servily-subserviently (relating more towards systematically). Either way, it is noticed that people are showing their dissent towards this Act, and particularly when the “subject matter” has been widely circulated. There are different ways of unfolding narratives, and this has to be acknowledged or recognised by people who are today prospecting CAB doesn’t turn out for the worst. In one direct narrative, the decree of this biased law is openly perceived, and this tells a lot on the whole sense of content the CAB is enraged for. I don’t mean to sound apathetic, but CAB has really upset many systematic congruity which either the revised law makers fail to see, or chooses not to. There are escalating consequences and this has to be understood by the people — nationally or nationalistically, the context used is not wrong to look out for trades, borders, internal agent provocateurs, security etc. related problems it associates with. There are many questions like what about their left over move after this, and why and what was its actual motive being carried, and much more on the whole procedure. But this much I today say to you on the topic. Nagaland Post, Dimapur WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 8, 2020

‘Campuses not havens for hate politics’ Bengaluru, Jan 7 (PTI): Days after the Jawaharlal Nehru University was rocked by violence, Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu on Tuesday said educational campuses must not become safe havens for the politics of hate and violence to thrive. He also said academic endeavors and co-curricular initiatives must attain primacy in universities and not factionalism and divisive tendencies. There is no doubt that there is space for every shade of opinion and every point of view in our universities, Naidu said in his address at the silver jubilee celebrations of the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) here. The Vice-President’s comments come in the backdrop of the violence at the JNU on Sunday night when masked men armed with sticks and rods attacked students and teachers and damaged property on the campus, leaving several injured. “Our children, when they leave the portals of the educational institutions must be enlightened

M Venkaiah Naidu citizens who will take an abiding interest in protecting our democracy and preserving the fundamental values that are enshrined in our constitution. But our campuses must not become safe havens for the politics of hate and violence to thrive. Academic endeavours and co-curricular initiatives must attain primacy in our universities and not factionalism and divisive tendencies, Naidu said. Stressing the need for focus on research and development, the Vice President said that at present India was spending less than 1 per cent of its GDP on R&D. This must change. Research, especially

Science and Technology research, is resource-intensive, time consuming and risky. We as a society, must be prepared to bear with this risk, he said in his address, a copy of which was released to media. Further noting that it was a matter of grave concern that Indian universities rank low in both research and teaching, Naidu said, though the number of Higher Education Institutions has surged in India since the 2000s, the number of students undertaking PhDs has not shown a corresponding hike. There are over a one lakh India-born PhDs in universities around the world. We must attract at least some of this talent back home through better opportunities and incentives so that they may help fast-track the progress of our R & D sector, he said. It was a matter of grave concern that the latest India Skills Report suggests that only 47 per cent of Indian graduates were employable, the Vice President pointed out and said, therefore, along with

education, necessary skills, including life skills, should be imparted to the students. Complementing the accreditation framework developed by NAAC, Naidu said he was certain in the time to come, NAAC will act as a friend, philosopher and guide to our Institutions of Higher Education, constantly raising standards and benchmarks for quality and excellence. Earlier, the Vice-President visited Poornaprajna Vidyapeetha here, where Vishwesha TheerthaSwamiji of Pejawar Mutt, who passed away last month, has been interred and paid floral tributes. The Swamiji was a true embodiment of the teachings of Srimad Bhagavadgita and his was a life dedicated to purify the cultural, religious and social values of our present day society, he said. Naidu also visited the mechanised kitchen facility at “Adamya Chetana”, that serves food to thousands of school children. It was founded by late Union Minister AnanthKumar and his wife Tejaswini.

Bengal BJP chief asks ambulance to take detour

Hemant Soren government pledges all-round development

Ko l k ata , Ja n 7 (IANS): In an incident that has caused raised eybrows, West Bengal BJP unit President Dilip Ghosh has refused to give right of way to an ambulance at a street meeting in Nadia district, saying the movement of the vehicle would disturb his rally and, instead, asked the ambulance driver to take a detour. The incident happened in Krishnanagar on Monday near the district administrative building where Ghosh was addressing a meeting in support of the new Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA). As Ghosh started his speech, the hooter-blaring ambulance drove in from the right side of the stage, following which the BJP leader was heard telling the driver to take a detour. “You can’t go this way. People are sitting on the road. There will be disturbance. You take a detour,” he said, and the ambulance went by his diktat. Later, however, Ghosh said it was a conspiracy to derail his meeting.

Ranchi, Jan 7 (PTI): The new Jharkhand government on Tuesday pledged an honest all-round development of every section of the society keeping away “malice, hatred, arrogance and vengefulness” while discharging work to live up to words of Jawaharlal Nehru tbat history cannot be changed merely by changing photo-frames on the walls. The commitment of the JMM-Congress-RJD ministry was spelled by Governor Droupadi Murmu while addressing the maiden Assembly session after formation of the coalition government. She said the government favoured an industrial policy in which local youth would get maximum employment, besides encouraging cottage and minor industries. Murmu said man-days of MGNREGA would be increased to help agriculture workers get employment during off season. “Our government favours such an industrial policy in which local youth gets maximum jobs. For this, a secure and fearless environment will be en-

Hemant Soren abled. Cottage and minor industries will be promoted and for that mandatory provision of license and no objection certificate will be dispensed with,” Murmu said. She said the government, respecting the sacrifice of martyrs would keep away “maliciousness, hatred, arrogance and vengefulness” while working and taking forward good works of the previous governments. She, however, said some irrigation and dam projects would be reviewed. “With an aim to protect secularism and freedom of speech, stringent action will be taken against mob violence,” she said, adding the government supported liberty of expression and

faith of all communities. She said the government would ensure the police worked impartially and without any pressure. The governor said administration system would be made more accountable, transparent and effective. Pledging to work for the welfare and development of the deprived, dalits, tribals, the poor and minorities, the governor said people living in slums would be ensured drinking water, electricity, healthcare, education, roads and housing. The government, she added, would also cover the middle class with housing, education, health and other basic amenities. The governor called upon the members of the newly elected House to work for the people and states development with commitment and dedication. Quoting Jawaharlal Nehru once saying “you cant change history by changing photo-frames on the walls”, Murmu said respecting the dignified legacy, the government would script a new history by making a welfare state in the interest of the people.

Dhankhar, who has been at loggerheads with the TMC government in the state over a range of issues, said there is need for soul searching. His comments followed Banerjee’s condemnation of the attack on JNU students and teachers as a “fascist surgical strike” by the BJP. “Acts of violence, anarchy in educational institutions is worrisome and should not be tolerated. Silence of those in authority (who severely condemned JNU violence) over what happened at Jadavpur University a fortnight ago is painfully worrisome,” Dhankhar said in a tweet this morning. Recounting the incident at Jadavpur University in December where his entry was blocked by protestors during the annual convocation, Dhankhar said his position as the varsity’s chancellor “was compromised by omission and inaction of state and university authorities”.

Widespread violence broke out in JNU on Sunday with students, including girls, were assaulted in their hostel rooms by masked miscreants wielding wooden and iron rods. They also vandalised other properties. JNUSU President Aishe Ghosh was hit over her eye, with an iron road and taken to the hospital. Some teachers were also injured in the violence, in which outsiders were also allegedly involved. Satyarthi, whose Bachpan Bachao Andolan became a benchmark for child rights, urged the Prime Minister to initiate a dialogue with all students unions across the country to restore peace.

The Finance Ministry is seized of the problems being faced by traders in the taxation system and the government would do its utmost for providing maximum relief to traders, she said. According to Sitharaman, while traders bring in tax revenue earners and no prudent government would like to annoy them, they, however, also need to bring their businesses into system and modernise their existing business formats.

Washington, Jan 7 (IANS): John Bolton, the former US National Security Adviser (NSA), has said that he was ready and willing to testify at the pending Senate impeachment trial against President Donald Trump if he received a subpoena from the Republicanmajority Upper House. “I have concluded that, if the Senate issues a subpoena for my testimony, I am prepared to testify,” Efe news quoted Bolton as saying. The interest regarding what Bolton may know about the Ukraine aid suspension case that has led to Trump’s impeachment skyrocketed during the House impeachment investigation launched by Democrats becuse he was in the forefront of foreign policymaking in the White House when the President pressured Kiev to launch an investigation of his main political rival, former Vice President and Democratic frontrunner Joe Biden. According to Fiona Hill, a former subordinate of Bolton when he headed the National Security Council, the former NSA said on one occasion that he had nothing to do with the “drug deal” that other Trump advisers were “cooking up” regarding Ukraine.

In his statement on Monday, Bolton said that after his attorney informed a House committee that he would leave the decision of whether he would testify up to the court, the committee decided not to issue a subpoena to try and compel him to appear before lawmakers. Ultimately, Democrats ended their investigation without Bolton’s testimony and the House of Representatives in December approved two articles of impeachment against Trump

- abusing his office and obstruction of Congress. “It now falls to the Senate to fulfil its Constitutional obligation to try impeachments, and it does not appear possible that a final judicial resolution of the still-unanswered Constitutional questions can be obtained before the Senate acts,” Bolton said. “Accordingly, since my testimony is once again at issue, I have had to resolve the serious competing issues as best I could, based on careful consideration and study. I have concluded that, if the Senate issues a subpoena for my testimony, I am prepared to testify.” Democrats have proposed a roadmap for a possible Senate trial of Trump, asking that four new witnesses, including Bolton and Chief of Staff Mick Mulvaney, be called to testify on the Ukraine matter.

MIAMI, Jan 7 (Agencies): A 6.4-magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Puerto Rico on Tuesday, the strongest tremor yet in a week of heavy seismic activity in the area. It knocked out power to much of the island. The quake, which struck five miles southwest of Tallaboa on Puerto Rico’s southwestern coast, was recorded at 4:24 a.m. local time, according to the United States Geological Survey. The full scope of the damage was not immediately known. A 73-year-old man died in the city of Ponce after a wall fell on him, reported El Nuevo Día, Puerto Rico’s largest newspaper, citing local police. Widespread power outages were reported, including in San Juan, the capital. The Puerto Rico Electric Power Authority said all of its power plants had gone offline after its “auto protection” systems had been activated. The utility reported damage to one of its main plants near the earthquake’s epicenter but said it hoped to restore electricity elsewhere later on Tuesday.

ures have said the Islamic Republic would match the scale of the killing when it responds, but that it would choose the time and place. Tuesday’s stampede broke out amid the crush of mourners, killing 56 people, state television said, raising the toll from 50 previously. More than 210 people were injured, an emergency services official told the semiofficial Fars news agency. “Today because of the heavy congestion of the crowd unfortunately a number of our fellow citizens who were mourning were injured and a number were killed,” emergency medical

services chief Pirhossein Kolivand told state television. Soleimani was a national hero to many Iranians, whether supporters of the clerical leadership or not, but viewed as a dangerous villain by Western governments opposed to Iran’s arc of influence running across the Levant and into the Gulf region. Iran’s opponents say its proxies have fuelled conflicts, killing and displacing people in Iraq, Syria and beyond. Tehran says any operations abroad are at the request of governments and that it offers “advisory support”. Soleimani’s body had been taken to Iraqi and Iranian cities before arriving in Kerman for burial. In each place, huge numbers of people filled thoroughfares, chanting “Death to America” and weeping with emotion. Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei wept as he led prayers in Tehran. The U.S. defense secretary denied reports Washington was preparing to withdraw troops from Iraq, where Iran has vied with Washington for the upper hand since the 2003 U.S.-led invasion. About 5,000 U.S. troops remain in Iraq, where there has been a U.S. military presence since Saddam

56 killed in stampede at Soleimani’s funeral

DUBAI/BAGHDAD, Jan 7 (Agencies): At least 56 people were killed in a stampede as tens of thousands of mourners packed streets for the funeral of a slain Iranian military commander in his hometown on Tuesday, forcing his burial to be delayed by several hours, state media said. General Qassem Soleimani’s burial began in the early evening in the southeastern Iranian city of Kerman, four days after his killing in a U.S. drone strike in Iraq that plunged the region into a new crisis and raised fears of broader conflict.

River Nile is 30 million years old

R

iver Nile has been flowing across Africa for 30 million years, making it six times older than was previously thought, geologists have found. From studying rocks along the river and simulations, experts determined that the Nile’s northward flow is maintained by movements in the Earth mantle beneath. Upwelling magma has been pushing up the Ethiopian Highlands, helping to keep the river flowing northward rather than wending its way westwards. Through its watering of North Africa’s

valleys, the Nile — considered to be the source of all life by the ancient Egyptians — has shaped the course of human civilisation. Long-lived rivers usually move over time — making the Nile’s stability over time something of a mystery. ‘One of the big questions about the Nile is when it originated and why it has persisted for so long,’ said geologist Claudio Faccenna of Italy’s Roma Tre University. ‘Our solution is actually quite exciting,’ he added. To solve the puzzle of the Nile’s unchangeability, Professor Faccenna and

colleagues set out to trace the river’s history. To do this, they analysed ancient, volcano-derived rocks in the Ethiopian highlands, matching these to the deposits of sediments carried down the river and ultimately buried under the Nile Delta. The researchers determined that after rising rapidly, the Ethiopian Highlands have remained a relatively similar height for millions of years, supported by rock in the Earth’s mantle, beneath. According to the researchers, however, it had not previously been clear how this topography

‘Indians avoid agriculture studies X1 Members’ agencies announce due to lack of awareness’

M

any Indian students are not taking up agricultural studies due to lack of awareness, an Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) official said on Monday at the first ever Farmers’ Science Congress held at the ongoing 107th Indian Science Congress. “There are a lot of opportunities in agricultural education in India. Perhaps it is the lack of knowledge about opportunities on agricultural studies that many students gravitate towards engineering and medical education,” said ICAR’s Deputy Director General for Education, R. C. Agrawal. In an effort to popularise agricultural education among students, ICAR will organise 48 workshops in February, he said. “We will meet school teachers, principals and science teachers to

explain the available agricultural education opportunities,” said Agrawal. ICAR has teamed up with the World Bank to create the National Agricultural Higher Education Project (NAHEP), with a budget of Rs 1,100 crore, each contributing 50 per cent. ICAR has already sent 300 students and 18 faculty members to study in international universities through NAHEP in the last one year. It has a target of sending 2,000 students and 300 faculty members, to expose the students to best practices and return with many fresh ideas. “NAHEP is aimed at ensuring food security, sufficient resources and solving farmers’ problems,” said Agrawal hoping that the students will become job creators and not job seekers. group’s disbandment

A

gencies of X1 members have announced that the group will be disbanding. On January 6, their agencies revealed that X1 members and each of the agencies negotiated under the condition of unanimous agreement, but could not come to an agreement, so they have decided on their disbandment The following official press release read “This is Play M Entertainment, Yuehua Entertainment, TOP Media, OUI Entertainment, MBK Entertainment, Woollim Entertainment, DSP Media, Starship Entertainment, and Brand New Music. The X1 members and each of the agencies negotiated under the condition of unanimous agreement, but we could not come to an agreement, so we have decided on their disbandment”. (SOOMPI)

was maintained over such a length of time. To verify their findings, the team turned to computer simulations, which modelled around 40 million years of the Earth’s plate tectonic activity. The team found that the arrival of a so-called mantle plume — an upwelling of hotter rock from deep within the Earth — likely provided the lava which generated the Ethiopian Highlands. This plume would also have forged a sort-of conveyor belt of magma in the mantle that persists, supporting the highlands, up to the present day. This mantle activity — lifting up the south and pulling the north down at the same time — would have kept the Nile on a gentle gradient that maintained its consistent, northwardwending course. The simulation was also able to reproduce changes in the African landscape almost exactly as the team expected — even down to such tiny aspects as the whitewater rapids that can be found along the length of the Nile. Manjit Bawa: From thought to canvas

A

private collection of works of art by the late Indian painter Manjit Bawa (1941-2008) is all set to on view in the national capital. Titled ‘Mitti Da Bawa’, the show will feature works ranging from drawings to large finished canvases as well as some rare miniature work. Bawa, a modernist master of the figurative genre, drew inspiration from India’s perennial spirit, music, literature and poetry. His childhood memories remain, the Himachali shepherd as he saw him in his travel across the state, the cows bulls, goats which are an integral part of India, and also of his works. Featuring close to 30 works, the show traces the evolution of some of his art and clearly brings out the process followed from thought to canvas. Most of his paintings and drawings have a story behind them. Apart from paintings, Bawa was also passionate about Sufi music and used to play the dholak, the organisers said.

Greta Thunberg responds to Meat Loaf’s claims ‘brainwashed’

G

reta Thunberg ha s r e spo nd e d to Meat Loaf ’s claims, that she has been “brainwashed” into believing in climate change. The hard rock veteran argued on January 3 that the 17 year old activist’s time would be better spent on something other than working to reverse climate change. “I feel for that Greta,” he said. “She has been brainwashed into thinking that there is climate change and there isn’t. She hasn’t done anything wrong but she’s been forced into thinking that what she is saying is true.” Thunberg, who has become a figurehead for global environmental movement and inspired number of protests, strikes and continued work of Extinction Rebellion, has now responded to the musician. “It’s not about Meatloaf. It’s not about me. It’s not about what some people call me. It’s not about left or right,” she tweeted.

Last year, Thunberg was nominated for the 2019 Nobel Peace Prize and was named TIME’s Person Of The Year. Billie Eilish has also praised the teenager, saying she had “paved the way” for her generation. “She’s doing her thing and I feel honoured to be compared to her,” Eilish told NME. “Hopefully the adults and the old people start listening to us [about climate change] so that we don’t all die. Old people are gonna die and don’t really care if we die, but we don’t wanna die yet.”

T h u n b e r g ’s mu c h publicised climate activism in 2019 has drawn praise from likes of Leonardo DiCaprio, Björk and The 1975, the latter even invited Thunberg to collaborate with them on a track back in summer. Last year, Meat Loaf made headlines when he fell offstage during a speaking event and broke his collarbone. He has previously claimed that his health issues that resulted in him collapsing on stage at another event mean that he may never sing again. (NME)

Playing the didgeridoo is good for your health!

D

idgeridoo lessons, choir singing and calligraphy can each benefit health, according to a major review. For the first time, the World Health Organisation (WHO) looked at the ways in which the arts can prevent and treat illness. Among those which showed ‘a robust impact of the arts’ on health’ included dance for PTSD to relive tension in muscles and group-knitting to encourage socialising in dementia patients. Some art interventions, the WHO claimed, show comparable or stronger effects than medication or exercise. The WHO’s European branch looked at 900 publications, including reviews covering 3,000 further studies, in English and Russian from January 2000 to May 2019. The

studies covered mental and physical illness, including diseases like cancer and diabetes, and neurological disorders such as cerebral palsy and stroke. The arts were divided into five categories: performing arts, visual arts, literature, culture, and online arts. One highlighted study showed didgeridoo lessons for asthmatic Australian children improved respiratory function in males. The review said the lessons also helped improve adherence to asthma management plans and their condition as a whole. Similarly, singing has a number of similarities to breathing techniques used to treat respiratory diseases by clearing airways, the report said. It can also improve exercise capacity in people with

chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Meeting for choir singing can provide distraction for addicts, reduce depression and provide social oppor-

tunities for dementia patients. A month of calligraphy training was shown to reduce stress in children who survived the 2008 China earthquakes. It also

lessened hyperarousal, a side effect of PTSD which causes angry outbursts, panic attacks or anxiety. (Vanessa Chalmers for Mailonline)

Tiny cat-sized deer living in a forest in Vietnam

A

miniature deer that was feared to have gone extinct after it was only sighted once in a century has been rediscovered in Southeast Asia. The chevrotain, also known as the mouse-deer,

is about the size of a domestic cat and dates back to the Stone Age when it was depicted in cave art. It was believed to have been lost to time until it was spotted in the wilds of Vietnam this year – for the

first time in three decades. Scientists have now filmed and photographed the species for the first time since 1990 when the last known specimen was killed - before then a sighting hadn’t been confirmed since 1907. The

discovery could save other endangered animals being hunted out of existence to feed growing demand for bush meat. The silverbacked chevrotain is prized by by locals who use thin wire nooses - or snares - to catch it. Co-leader of the study, An Nguyen, a biologist at Global Wildlife Conservation (GWC) in Austin, Texas, said: ‘For those of us living in Vietnam and working in wildlife conservation, the question of whether the chevrotain was still out there and if so, where, has been nagging us for years. It’s the first rediscovery of a mammal on GWC’s 25 most wanted lost species list. His team conducted interviews with villagers to identify possible chevrotain sightings. They then used this local knowledge to place more than 30 motion-activated camera traps within a nearby forested habitat.

Six months of observations identified almost 300 independent detections of the animal. The number of distinct individuals is unknown, reports Nature Ecology & Evolution. The team then set up another 29 cameras in the same area, this time recording 1,881 photographs of the chevrotain over another five months. Co-lead author Andrew Tilker, also of GWS, described the tiny ungulate as ‘about the size of a house cat.’ ‘However, most of these species are now very rare or extinct in Vietnam. The silver-backed chevrotain’s only real predator now is man.’ The biologists, who are also doctoral students at the Leibniz Institute for Zoo and Wildlife Research in Berlin, tracked it down in the dry forests outside Nha Trang. Osaka beats Sakkari in Brisbane

Naomi Osaka

B RI A B A N E , J an 7 (Agencies): Japanese star Naomi Osaka came from a break down in the third set to overcome Greece’s Maria Sakkari in the first round of the WTA Brisbane International on Tuesday. Sakkari sniffed an upset when she won the second set in a tiebreak then broke Osaka’s opening service game of the third set, but the former world number one dug deep and won 6-2, 6-7 (4/7), 6-3 in a two-hour

opening-round clash. Osaka, the tour nament’s third seed, said she was pleased with her first match of the year, after she was forced out of the WTA Finals in October with a shoulder injury. “I’m really happy with how I served - I had to retire from my last match because of my shoulder thing, so I wasn’t really sure how I was going to serve today,” she said. “But I was told I hit 16 aces, so that’s pretty good for me.”

Sixth-seeded Dutchwoman Kiki Bertens also progressed in three sets, beating Ukraine’s Dayana Yastremska 6-4, 1-6, 6-3. Eighth seed Madison Keys served brilliantly in her impressive 6-3, 6-2 win over Czech qualifier Marie Bouzkova. The American made 70 percent of her first serves as she eased to a comfortable victory in just 66 minutes. “I think it (my serve) was just working pretty well today,” she said. “I probably took a little bit of pace off but more just because I felt like I was kind of feeling my slider a little bit more. It’s always nice when you can not only make your first serve, but it feels like it sets up the point really well for you.” Russian qualifier Liudmila Samsonova caused an upset when she beat former US Open champion Sloane Stephens. Samsonova, playing only her seventh main draw WTA tournament, recorded her first victory over a top-30 player with her 6-4, 2-6, 6-3 win.

New Delhi, Jan 7 (IANS): While the 2020 edition of the Indian Premier League is set to get underway at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on March 29, the final will be played on May 24. The 57day window also means that broadcasters Star are likely to have their way and there will be no double headers. The starting time is almost certain to be 7.30 p.m. Speaking to IANS, sources in the know of developments confirmed that the 2020 edition will be played over 57 days and the longer window means that double headers could now be a thing of the past. “While the full schedule isn’t ready yet, the final is set to be played on May 24 and with the tournament starting on March 29, you obviously get a longer window than say 45 days. So, there should be no issue in accommodating one game a day. In fact, it should be a walk in the park for those chalking out how matches will be played over 57 days,” the source said. Asked about the starting time, considering that Star is keen on an early start, the source said it was almost certain that games will start at 7.30 p.m.

His second in the 33rd minute came with a helping hand from Napoli goalkeeper Alex Meret, who seemed to have Lukaku’s shot covered but allowed it to slip through his legs into the net. It was tough luck on Meret who had previously produced two good saves to keep Inter down to one

Inter Milan beat Napoli 3-1 in Serie A

NAPLES, Jan 7 (Agencies): Inter Milan forward Romelu Lukaku scored twice, the first from a run which started inside his own half, to lead his side to an entertaining 3-1 win at Napoli which kept them top of Serie A on Monday. Lautaro Mar tinez was also on target as Inter claimed their first away win against Napoli since 1997. Inter lead the standings on goal difference from Juventus, who beat Cagliari 4-0 earlier on Monday, with both teams on 45 points. The head-to-head record will be used once the two sides have met twice. Napoli, on the other hand, suffered their second defeat in three games since Gennaro Gattuso replaced Carlo Ancelotti as coach and stayed eighth with 24 points despite showing flashes of their old style. “This win is worth a lot,” said Inter coach Antonio Conte. “It’s never easy to win at Napoli for anyone. We faced the match with great personality and this will give us more selfconfidence and belief. We need to carry on like this.” Napoli also had chances before Lukaku put Inter ahead after 13 minutes. India crush SL by 7 wickets in 2nd T20

Saini (R) celebrates with team-mates after taking the wicket of Sri Lanka's Bhanuka Rajapaksa on Tuesday.

after the solid opening partnership for India. Despite losing the two openers in quick succession, India were never really in any kind of trouble. Shreyas Iyer came in at No. 3 and kept the scorers busy. The Mumbai batsman fell for a well-made 34 off 26 balls. Captain Virat Kohli, who became the leading run-scorer in T20I cricket on Tuesday, was impressed with himself when he hit a

couple of huge sixes towards the end of the match. Kohli remained unbeaten on 30 (17 balls) and sealed the win with a six in the 18th over. India got the chase done and dusted with 15 balls and 7 wickets to spare. The India chase looked a mere formality, thanks to the bowlers who began their New Years on a high. Indore, Jan 7 (Agencies): India could not have asked for a better start to the T20 World Cup year as they thrashed Sri Lanka in the 2nd match of the ongoing 3-match series in Indore on Tuesday. The hosts have now sealed an unbeatable 1-0 lead against the Sri Lankan side which looked ordinary in Indore. KL Rahul continued from where he left in 2019

as he took apart the Sri Lankan bowling attack in the powerplay. The in-form opener missed out on a fifty but he did the job with a 45 off 32 balls at the Holkar Stadium. KL Rahul and comeback man Shikhar Dhawan (32 off 29 balls) gave India a solid start with a 71-run stand for the opening stand. There was never really any doubt over which way the match was going to go

Serena Williams

Au c kla n d, Ja n 7 (Agencies): Top seed Serena Williams kick-started her Auckland Classic singles campaign with an easy 6-3 6-2 victory over Italian qualifier Camila Giorgi on Tuesday. Playing her first singles match since losing last year’s U.S. Open final to Bianca Andreescu, the 38-year-old Williams fired eight aces and was hardly troubled by Giorgi. Williams broke the Italian’s serve three times, while remaining unbroken herself in a first round-match lasting 68 minutes. Giorgi, 28, could not cope with Williams’ pow-

erful serve as the 23-times Grand Slam winner prevailed in blustery conditions, stretching her unbeaten run against her Italian opponent to five matches. “It was really fun to be out here and back again,” Williams said. “It’s really good to know I still have some power in my arms and legs.” Williams, who advanced to the doubles quarter-finals with Caroline Wozniacki on Monday, is on course to face 15-yearold compatriot Coco Gauff in the quarter-finals should both advance. “I definitely think the doubles helped me a lot, es-

pecially with my serve,” the American added. “I served pretty decent, considering the conditions.” Fifth seed Wozniacki, who is set to retire after this month’s Australian Open, outclassed local wildcard Paige Hourigan 6-1 6-0. Hourigan, ranked 178 in the world, trailed 5-0 in the opening set in 13 minutes and her tally of 30 unforced errors proved decisive. “Definitely disappointed because I had a great week of preparation here and I felt very confident going in,” Hourigan said. “I was making a lot of errors which I wasn’t doing throughout the week... Wozniacki is a great player and it was tough conditions out there.” German fourth seed and defending champion Julia Gorges advanced to the last 16 with a 6-1 7-6(4) victory over Belgium’s Greet Minnen. Second seed Petra Martic of Croatia was initially frustrated by lucky loser Usue Maitane Arconada before storming back to win 5-7 6-4 6-4.

After electing to bat first, Arunachal Pradesh players were bowled out for just 30 runs in the first innings. For Nagaland, A Yadav claimed 4 wickets while Akavi and Hopongkyu took 3 and 1 respectively. Nagaland riding on Imli’s 123 runs and Puchu’s 105 runs put up a massive 406 runs in the first innings. wickets, Navdeep Saini was the pick of the bowlers as he rattled the Sri Lankan batsmen with pace and finished with figures of 2/18 in 4 overs. Washington Sundar began the proceedings for Team India when he picked up the wicket of Avishka Fernando who looked in good touch in the powerplay. With Kuldeep Yadav chipping in with 2 wickets, India bowlers kept striking at regular intervals and put the brakes on the Sri Lankan scoring rate. Kusal Perera (34) was the only Sri Lankan batsman who looked comfortable out in the middle but he was not able to convert his start into a big one, thanks to Kuldeep who picked up his wicket at a crucial juncture. Shardul Thakur made sure there was no late surge from Sri Lanka by picking up 3 wickets in the penultimate over of the game. Having sealed a 1-0 lead, India will look to clinch the series when they take on Sri Lanka in the 3rd and final T20I on Friday in Pune. Brief scores: Sri Lanka 142/9 (Kusal Perera 34; Shardul Thakur 3/23) lost to India 144/3 (KL Rahul 45; Wanindu Hasaranga 2/30) by 7 wickets

Arsenal edge past Leeds United 1-0 in FA Cup LONDON, Jan 7 (Agencies): Arsenal’s Reiss Nelson scored early in the second half to secure a 1-0 win over battling Championship leaders Leeds United in the FA Cup third round at The Emirates on Monday. Nelson put a near fullstrength home side ahead in the 55th minute, scrappily side-footing the ball into the net after the Leeds defence was caught out by an Alexandre Lacazette cross. Arsenal, who have won the world’s oldest cup competition a record 13 times — but lost to Leeds in the 1972 final — visit fellow Premier League side Bournemouth in the fourth round. Leeds had taken the game to Arsenal straight from the whistle, pushing forward and blasting 11 shots on goal to the hosts’ one in the first 25 minutes alone. They dominated possession and striker Patrick Bamford was unlucky not to score after 15 minutes when he collected the ball from Jack Harrison but curled his close-range shot

We got the goal in the end and that is the most important thing,” said Nelson. “This will give us confidence to go forward.” Lacazette said Arteta gave the players a firm talking to at halftime, although the manager made it sound less daunting. “Now I’m really pleased but we saw two different teams from the first to second half. I tried to tell them exactly what they were going to face and after 32 minutes we’d won one duel,” he said. “We changed our attitude, desire and organisation at halftime and then we were completely different. It was good for my players to learn and to suffer on the pitch.” Both sides fielded second-string keepers — with Emiliano Martinez coming in for Arsenal and Illan Meslier for leeds — and the home side were missing striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang due to illness, but otherwise they fielded strong lineups.

Man City to host Fulham in 4th round Defending champions Manchester City will face Fulham in the FA Cup fourth round. The Cottagers defeated Premier League side Aston Villa in the last round but will be looking to pull off an even more impressive result at the Etihad. Liverpool have been drawn away to the winners of the third-round replay between Bristol City and Shrewsbury. Leicester, second in the Premier League and already targeting silverware after reaching the semi-finals of the Carabao Cup, face a tough trip to in-form outfit Brentford. Dense bushfire smoke threatens Australian Open Sydney, Jan 7 (IANS): Dense bushfire smoke is threatening the start of the Australian Open with a potentially hazardous fog lingering over Melbourne less than a fortnight before the competition begins. The city’s air quality was downgraded from ‘very poor’ to ‘hazardous’, prompting health warnings from authorities, reports Xinhua news agency. The smoke comes from widespread fires which continue to rage in Victoria’s East Gippsland region. Seven-time Australian Open champion Novak Djokovic expressed his concerns about the air quality in Melbourne, saying that players and officials would meet to discuss a possible delayed start to the tournament. However, Tennis Australia chief executive Craig Tiley responded by saying that he is confident the event will go ahead as planned. “We have committed substantial extra resources to analysis, monitoring and logistics to ensure the health and safety of all players, staff and fans throughout

the summer and have no other plans to move events,” Tiley said. Women’s world No. 1 Ashleigh Barty said that there were bigger issues than the delaying of the tournament, and that health and safety would have to come first. “First and foremost, the reason that there is smoke in the air is what’s most devastating at the moment for our country,” the Australian said. “It’s just a really tough time. Tennis is a sport, it’s a game that we play, and there are certainly a lot of bigger things going on in Australia right now that we need to take care of.” As a show of support for those affected by the fires, a special ‘Rally for Relief ’ event will be held ahead of the Australian Open, with many of the world’s top players committing to charity matches. The matches are part of a larger initiative known as the ‘Aces for Bushfire Relief ’, which will see $69 donated for every ace served at tournaments across the country this summer.
