Govt-farmers meet ends in deadlock Next round of talks on Jan 15; farmer unions say ready to fight till death
NEW DELHI, JAN 8 (PTI): The government’s negotiations with farm unions to end over-a-month-long agitation appeared heading nowhere at the eighth round of talks on Friday as the Centre ruled out repealing the three contentious laws claiming nationwide support for reforms while the farmer leaders said they are ready to fight till death and their ‘ghar waapsi’ will happen only after ‘law waapsi’. The next meeting has been fixed for January 15, amid indications that any headway will now depend on a Supreme Court hearing scheduled for January 11 on a batch of petitions related to the protest. The farmer groups have also decided to meet on January 11 to decide their next course of action, even as many leaders said they have lost hope now that any resolution could be reached even in the next round of negotiations. The meeting at Vigyan Bhawan in the heart of the national capital lasted for

little over two hours, during which just about one hour of discussions took place, after which union leaders went on a maun vrat (vow of silence) holding placards with ‘Jeetenge Ya Marenge’ (We will win or die) and did not take a lunch break, while the three union ministers left the room for their own internal consultations. Briefing the media after the talks, Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar said no decision could be reached as the farmer leaders did not present alternatives to their demand for the repeal of the laws. He hoped that the unions will come up with alternatives in the next meeting for the consideration of the government. Union leaders, however, insisted they do not want anything less than the repeal of the laws and they are ready to fight till death. They also threatened that they are prepared to celebrate Lohri and Baisakhi festivals at their protest sites.

The two harvest-related festivals, one on January 13 and the other on April 13, are celebrated with much fanfare by the farming community in northern India. The union leaders also said the farmers, thousands of whom are staying put at Delhi borders despite extremely cold weather and heavy rains, will continue with their plan to hold a tractor rally on Republic Day on January 26. Farmer representatives said the discussions between the two sides were not entirely cordial this time and the pitch was high at times, while emotions ran high outside the venue also. Woman farmer leader Ravinder Kaur of Jai Kisan
Andolan, crying profusely, said many mothers have lost their sons and many daughters have lost their fathers but the government was not ready to budge. Sources said the next date has been decided after keeping in mind the January 11 hearing as the government feels the apex court may look into the legality of the three laws, besides other issues related to farmers’ protests. During the meeting, prominent farmer leader Balbir Singh Rajewal had said several Supreme Court orders in the past have declared agriculture a state subject but unions are not keen to take the legal route in the current scenario.
No ‘active’ fire in Dzükou Valley
Centre releases Rs. 326.41 crore for Nagaland
DIMAPUR, JAN 8 (NPN): No active fire was reported in Dzükou Valley on Friday but, Indian Air Force (IAF) helicopters will carry out sorties on Saturday too to monitor and douse any visible fire or smoke in the area. According to DIPR report, during a review meeting held in Kohima on Friday under the chairmanship of deputy commissioner (DC) and Kohima District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) chairman Mohammed, the superintendent of police (SP) Kohima Manoj Kumar said, as per the report of ground operation team camped at Dzükou base camp, no active fire or smoke was visible from the camp site till 8:30 am. However, after a few hours, some smoke was noticed at three different locations, though no fire was seen. Accordingly, teams were mobilised and the fire was doused physically at two locations. Of course, due to distance factor, cou-
pled with rough terrain and unavailability of tracks, the team could not reach the third location on the extreme ridge. The team would assess the situation and carry out the operation, the SP assured. Participating in the meeting, OSD Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority (NSDMA) Johny Rongmei said IAF would continue with its operations on Saturday to monitor any visible signs of fire or smoke and douse them, if detected. DFO Kohima, Raj Kumar informed the meeting that as per National Remote Sensing Agency, no active fire was detected by satellite on Thursday and Friday. Reiterating the order banning burning of jungles issued by him, the DC reminded the area administrative officers to strictly implement the order in their respective areas. The meeting was attended by ADC Lithrongla Tongpi Rutsa and other DDMA officials.

No equipment to monitor vehicle speed limit: CP Staff Reporter
DIMAPUR, JAN 8 (NPN): Despite the order to check speed limit of vehicles, Commissioner of Police (CP), Dimapur Rothihu Tetso said that they were yet to procure equipment to monitor speed limits. In most States, the Traffic police personnel use devices like speed gun or radar to measure the speed of moving vehicles. Talking to Nagaland Post, Tetso admitted that as of now the State did not have such machineries/ equipment to check the speed limit but would be introduced soon. In the event of any accident that takes place, he said speed would be detected manually. The CP recently notified speed limit, which has been fixed at 40 km per hour in Dimapur town area up to Chümoukedima for a period of one month with effect from January 5 to February 3. He explained that the reason for notifying speed limit was to create awareness so that the drivers are careful while driving and ensure that everyone was safe – the drivers, pas-
sengers and pedestrians. He said such measures might be inconvenient but it was in the interest of safety of the public in general. “The priority is safety first and obey the rules,” he stressed. On installation of CCTV cameras to monitor traffic movement, Tetso said a huge amount of money was required for the purpose. “As CCTV cameras will monitor movement of vehicles and help in investigation of accidents, besides identifying suspected criminals, we will need highresolution CCTV cameras,” he emphasised. Pointing out that road construction was not yet complete, he said installation of CCTV was the responsibility of national highway authorities. Meanwhile, 30 to 40 vehicles had been seized and penalised for wrong lane driving on the highway. The CP pointed that out traffic rules were for public safety and therefore everyone needed to drive carefully, mindful of others on the road around them. Meanwhile, Tetso said Dimapur recorded no fatality in road mishap during the just-concluded festive season.
CNTC lauds CM’s commitment on foothill road DIMAPUR, JAN 8 (NPN): Central Nagaland Tribes Council (CNTC) has appreciated the state chief minister Neiphiu Rio for his prompt consideration in committing to undertake the foothill road construction on priority basis. In a press release, CNTC president K Lanu Imchen and general secretary Tsungro Kikon also acknowledged the collective initiative of the Ao legislators in taking up the foothill road issue with the chief minister. CNTC also acknowledged the Eastern Nagaland Pe o p l e ’s O r g a n i s a t i o n (ENPO) for their earnestness. It maintained that the Naga people as a whole have “miserably failed” to acknowledge the immense necessity of having a foothill road from Khelma to Tizit. CNTC, therefore, asserted that foothill road project should be taken up on a war footing. CNTC has also called upon all massbased civil society and tribal organisations and all legislators to come aboard on the issue so as to accomplish the aspirations of the people at the earliest.

Union Finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman in a tweet stated that the grant released to the States on January 7 would provide them additional resources during the Corona crisis. The grant was also released to Andhra Pradesh, Assam, Himachal Pradesh, Kerala, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Punjab, Sikkim, Tamil Nadu, Tripura, Uttarakhand and West Bengal. A similar amount was released as a grant for April-November months of the current financial year.
CM stresses on good neighborly relation DIMAPUR, JAN 8 (NPN): State chief minister Neiphiu Rio stressed that good neighbourly relation between Nagaland and Manipur was of paramount important for overall development, while asking Tenyimi People’s Organisation (TPO) and Southern Angami Public Organisation (SAPO) to make all-out effort to amicable settle land disputes. In a meeting with representatives from TPO, Angami Public Organisation (APO), SAPO and Southern Angami Youth Organisation (SAYO) here in Kohima on Friday on land issues and measures to control wild fires that devastated areas in and around Dzükou Valley and Kezoltsa forest, the chief minister directed that from now onwards various State agencies dealing with fire-related incidents should work out a proper plan to handle wild fires, adding
such plans should incorporate both traditional and modern methods. Attended by adviser youth resources & sports, Zhale Neikha; adviser higher & technical and election, Medo Yhokha, Chief Secretary J Alam, Home commissioner Abhijit Sinha, DGP Nagaland T John Longkumer and other senior officials of the State government, the meeting was briefed about the current situation regarding the forest fires and the tremendous efforts made for containing and dousing them by various Central and State agencies, along with volunteers of SAYO with active support from SAPO, which was appreciated by everyone. TPO leaders gave a brief report on the history of problems in these areas and claimed that these areas traditionally belonged to Tenyimi people before be-
ing separated by the State boundaries of Nagaland and Manipur. They said they were still striving very hard to resolve the land disputes in the best interest of everyone through arbitration and the final judgment was at an advanced stage. The TPO leaders said the earlier arbitration undertakings among various groups in the disputed area indicated that all the stakeholders were against destruction of flora and fauna, collection of forest produce, hunting and construction of roads and were in favour of maintaining traditional boundaries and other rights associated with it. Therefore, they requested the Government of Nagaland to consider taking appropriate measures only after TPO delivered the final judgment in the disputed (Cont’d on p-6) area. K Y M C

Mnp police foil bid to storm CM’s bungalow flights on Kolkata-
Correspondent
IMPHAL, Jan 8: Police on Friday thwarted a large number of women belonging to 26 different women based civil society organisations from storming the chief minister’s bungalow. The womenfolk stormed the chief minister’s bungalow in Imphal to demand re-investigation and re-trial of the infamous 2018 multi-crore drug haul case in which a court had recently acquitted the alleged main accused. Even as an eight-member team of the women bodies was allowed to proceed and submit a memorandum, they were denied meeting the chief minister. As many as 26 different women based organisations joined hands under the banner of Nupi Samaj with the sole objective of pressing the government to approach a higher court with an prayer for re-investigation of the 2018 multi-crore drug haul case. Special Court (ND & PS) Manipur, while pro-
nouncing its verdict on the infamous multi-crore drug case on December 17 last, acquitted former ADC chairman Lukhosei Zou in the 2018 multi-crore drug haul case. Lukhosei Zou was arrested by the state police after a huge quantity of contraband drugs worth over Rs 27 crore in the international market and hard cash were recovered from his official quarter in Imphal’s Lamphel during a raid on the intervening night of June 19 and 20, 2018. Even as the police caught him red-handed, the court acquitted Zou while observing that the prosecution has failed to prove the charges levelled against him (Zou). The court had, however, convicted two drug peddlers including the driver of the former ADC in the case and sentenced them to 15 year imprisonment with Rs one lakh each as fine. Alleging something fishy in the verdict of the court, various civil society organisations campaigning
against drug abuse and women organisations have been demanding the government go to the higher court for re-investigation and re-trial. Joining the chorus, a large number of women, mostly members of the 26 woman organisations converged at Nupi Samaj office in Imphal’s Lamphelpat on Friday to carry out a rally allegedly targeting the chief minister’s bungalow. Upon receiving prior information, a large number of police personnel backed by male personnel rushed and halted the rally when it kick-started. The police prevented the rally without much struggle as police officers who rushed to the spot convinced the leaders not to carry out the rally but submit a memorandum to the chief minister. The police allowed eight leaders to proceed with them and submit the memorandum to the chief minister. The police further allowed them to submit a
similar memorandum demanding re-investigation of the case to the Governor. After coming out from the chief minister’s bungalow, the women leaders alleged that they were not allowed to meet the chief minister even as they approached the officials at the bungalow. “We wanted to meet the chief minister and talk on the issues related to the drug case. However, officials told us that we can meet him only after prior appointment is obtained,” Nupi Samaj president Th Ramani said. “It is very unfortunate that the chief minister who is the guardian of the people acted in such a manner. We are not going to meet him for our personal matter but on an issue of the state and its people,” she said. The president said that while submitting the memorandum, they actually wanted to meet him (chief minister) and convey what the women organisations desired from him. Such a drug case
should not be taken lightly. Manipuri society is slowly falling into the jaws of narcotic drugs by destroying every fabric of the society. As a chief minister, Shri Biren must take the matter seriously, she insisted. The president alleged that the whole section of the society were dissatisfied with the recent verdict of the court. They were sceptical of the verdict. As a head of the state, the chief minister has to do something to clear the doubt of the people. The government must appeal to the higher court for reinvestigation, she said. “Who will believe that a 19-year-old driver of Lukhosei Zou was the owner of a huge quantity of drugs? No one believes it. Investigate once again and find the truth,” she said. After coming out of the chief minister’s secretariat, the delegation proceeded towards the Raj Bhavan and submitted a memorandum similar to that submitted to the chief minister to the Governor.

No input on presence of Indian Shah’s 2-day visit to Mizoram Tripura keen to continue supplying insurgent camps in B’desh : BSF cancelled, no reason cited 160 MW electricity to B’desh
Correspondent
Shillong, Jan 8: The Border Security Force on Friday said there is “no input” about the presence of camps of Indian insurgent groups from Northeast in Bangladesh. “As per the Bangladesh Border Guards, there are no (NE-based militant outfit) camps in Bangladesh,” Inspector General of BSF, Meghalaya Frontier, Hardeep Singh said. “... efforts (locating anti-nationals) are on, not just by the BSF, but also other agencies. We are making all efforts to find out where they are and what they are planning,” Singh told reporters. Replying to a query on whether the outlawed Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC) is active or has its camps in Bangladesh, the top BSF official said: “We have no specific inputs and unless we have inputs we can’t say…” In fact, the Meghalaya police have also reiterated that the HNLC’s support base has dwindled over
Hardeep Singh
the years. With the Bangladeshi security forces carrying out operations against northeast militant organizations operating from its soil, Singh’s statement assumes significance. The HNLC, which runs hit-and-run operations from its hideout in Bangladesh, has been demanding a sovereign Hynniewtrep homeland in Meghalaya. Meghalaya shares a 443 km long border with Bangladesh, part of which is porous, hilly and unfenced and prone to frequent infiltrations. On the recent killing of a Meghalaya citizen by BGB troopers and a killing of a Bangladeshi smuggler by BSF in the border, Singh said that the BSF
had no role in the killing of a Bangladeshi national whereas the BSF has also lodged a complaint with BGB about the killing of an Indian citizen. “I am hoping that we will keep the border peaceful and we are still investigating as to how the Indian citizen was killed, ” Singh said. When asked about the increasing instances of Bangladeshi criminals intruding inside Indian territory and assaulting Indian citizens, Singh said that the BSF has increased its surveillance along the border and a strong protest has also been lodged with the BGB. “Our prime duty this year is to control crime in the border and we will continue to have a good relationship with BGB,” he added. Meanwhile, Singh added that 70 per cent of the fencing work in this sector has been completed in the Meghalaya sector. He said the work to fence the remaining 30 percent is being undertaken and the land acquisition process is on.

Itanagar, Jan 8 (PTI): Four more people have tested positive for COVID-19 in Arunachal Pradesh, taking the tally in the state to 16,757, a health department official said on Friday. Two fresh cases were detected from East Siang and one each from West Kameng and Tirap districts, the official said. All the new patients were diagnosed with the disease through rapid antigen tests, State Surveillance Officer Dr Lobsang Jampa said, adding that they were asymptomatic. Thirteen more people were cured of the disease on Thursday, taking the total number of recoveries in the northeastern state to 16,622, he said. Arunachal Pradesh now has 79 active cases, while 56 people have succumbed to the infection so far. The fatality ratio in the state is at 0.33 per cent. The Capital Complex region, comprising Itanagar, Naharlagun, Nirjuli and Banderdewa areas, has the highest number of active cases at 23, followed by Tawang (20) and East Siang (14). Ag artala , Ja n 8 (IANS): Tripura, which has been supplying 160 MW electricity to Bangladesh for the past five years, is keen to continue providing power to the neighbouring country and has approached the Indian government to settle the formalities for the same, Deputy Chief Minister Jishnu Dev Varma said on Friday. Tripura Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb met Union Minister of State for Power (independent charge) R.K. Singh in New Delhi on Thursday and urged him to take necessary steps so that the state can continue to supply power to Bangladesh. D e b s u b s e q u e n t ly tweeted: “Had a fruitful meeting with Hon’ble Minister of State (IC) for power Shri @RajKSinghIndia & requested him to extend the Power Supply Agreement for sale of 160 MW power to Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB) on existing terms & conditions. He proactively assured his full support.” Dev Varma, who holds the power, finance and rural
development portfolios, said that as Tripura has surplus electricity, the state is keen to continue to supplying power to Bangladesh. “The five-year term of the power supply agreement with Bangladesh will expire in March. The agreement must be renewed to continue supplying power to Bangladsh from Tripura,” Dev Varma told IANS. He said that the state government in the past few months has been in touch with the Centre to finalise the necessary official formalities between the two countries in this regard. A senior official of the Tripura State Electricity Corporation said that the state has been earning profit of around Rs 45 crore annually by supplying electricity to Bangladesh. “Last year, we had supplied 40 MW of electricity to Nepal, but the supply has been discontinued now as Nepal did not approach the Indian authorities afresh,” the official told IANS on condition of anonymity. Tripura had started supplying 100 MW power to Bangladesh from the
state-owned ONGC Tripura Power Company (OTPC) power plant in March 2016. The power supply has subsequently increased to 160 MW. “The NTPC Vidyut Vyapar Nigam (NVVN) is the nodal agency to supply power to Bangladesh from the Tripura power project,” the official said. He said that electricity is being supplied to Bangladesh and most of the northeastern states from the 726 MW generation capacity OTPC gas-based power plant at Palatana, 65 km south of Agartala. The OTPC, a joint venture company of Oil and Natural Gas Corporation, Infrastructure Leasing and Financial Services Ltd, IDFC Bank and the Tripura government, set up the 726MW project at Palatana in June 2013. According to officials, the OTPC’s combined cycle power plant, which is the largest gas-based power plant in the northeast, is meeting around 35 per cent of the power requirement of seven northeastern states, excluding Sikkim.

Rogue in the White House

ashington D.C. saw unprecedented scenes of President Donald Trump’s supporters storming the Capitol to stop Congress from certifying President-elect Joe Biden’s election victory. Americans are shocked and shamed by their president, who desecrated their nation’s greatest monument- the Capitol- the seat of the Congress and the Senate on January 6,2020 when several hundred protestors-turned mob, stormed the hallowed portals, when the joint session was going to certify Biden’s win. The mobs committed a criminal breach on the sanctum sanctorum of US democracy and acted in an illegal manner to disrupt the joint session of the Capitol. The stunning display of insurrection was the first time the US Capitol had been overrun since the British attacked and burned the building in August of 1814, during the War of 1812, according to Samuel Holliday, director of scholarship and operations with the US Capitol Historical Society The peaceful transfer of U.S. presidential power dating back to George Washington and John Adams more than two centuries ago ended with Donald Trump’s incitement of an insurrection January 6 when hundreds of his supporters broke into the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C. It was nothing less than domestic terrorism meant to prevent the certification of President-elect Joe Biden’s decisive victory in the Electoral College, and it left at least one person dead - a San Diego woman- and several people injured. The Conservative party’s silence in the face of Trump’s repeated assertions that the election was stolen from him became a tacit acceptance of his unverified claims. The chaos cemented Trump’s reputation as the worst president of all time. It will also cement the ruined reputations of shameless cheerleaders who put party over country for a president for whom lying came as naturally as breathing. President Trump’s refusal, from the start, to concede the election to Biden, coupled with his call to his supporters to make it clear that they do not accept the result, made him the enabler-in-chief of this sordid episode. State and federal judges have turned back dozens of lawsuits challenging the integrity of election results for the most basic of reasons: they have offered no proof. The Republican Party stood divided between Trumpism and patriotism and proved disturbingly unable to step up to the task of reining in their candidate. Trump’s presidency was marked by controversies that had nothing to do with his administrative decisions but more to do with his idiosyncratic language and actions. What was witnessed on January 6 was that dangerous moment when the fringe is so empowered by the patronage of the powerful, when it is so weaponised by the mainstream leadership, that it takes centre stage. In coming weeks and months, pundits and academics will attempt to explain how American democracy got to this point, how to restore its lost shine and how to salvage its reputation abroad. There will some who are sympathetic to Trump supporters and their grievances. However, the mobs who stormed the Capitol were trying to steal an election that their candidateDonald Trump- lost by more than 7 million deserves contempt, not sympathy. Shocked and shamed, many Republicans may back the proposal to invoke impeachment against Trump and it will be the last nail on his repulsive presidency and hopefully, it will be the last time such person will ever occupy the White House.
DailyDevotion Is My Sacrifice Living?
Abraham built an altar…; and he bound Isaac his son and laid him on the altar… —Genesis 22:9
This event is a picture of the mistake we make in thinking that the ultimate God wants of us is the sacrifice of death. What God wants is the sacrifice through death which enables us to do what Jesus did, that is, sacrifice our lives. Not— “Lord, I am ready to go with You…to death” (Luke 22:33). But— “I am willing to be identified with Your death so that I may sacrifice my life to God.” We seem to think that God wants us to give up things! God purified Abraham from this error, and the same process is at work in our lives. God never tells us to give up things just for the sake of giving them up, but He tells us to give them up for the sake of the only thing worth having, namely, life with Himself. It is a matter of loosening the bands that hold back our lives. Those bands are loosened immediately by identification with the death of Jesus. Then we enter into a relationship with God whereby we may sacrifice our lives to Him. It is of no value to God to give Him your life for death. He wants you to be a “living sacrifice”— to let Him have all your strengths that have been saved and sanctified through Jesus (Romans 12:1). This is what is acceptable to God.

Nagaland Post, Dimapur SATURDAY, JANUARY 9, 2021
N
ever before have global education systems undergone such stressful times as were unleashed on these — and the entire humanity, in fact — by the COVID-19 pandemic. The children suffered unprecedented restrictions owing to lockdown and home confinement for extended durations; away from their classrooms, friends, classmates and teachers. There is considerable evidence of emotional, mental and neurological impact on children, among others. Learning has also suffered much. Mobiles, online learning and contact with friends for the lucky few did bring some solace but these experiences had their own limitations and inadequacies. Suffering was common to all, and caring was experienced from all sides. In these tough times, positive vibes and tender, humane aspects were prominently evident all around. That was, and remains, the biggest ray of hope. The pandemic is not yet over but confidence has been regained: Vaccines are available; and human ingenuity shall overcome all adversity, no matter how major a deterrent and of what magnitude the odds are. In the spirit of “We shall overcome”, things shall be put back on rails and start moving ahead maybe with even greater vigor, confidence and assurance. The world’s population in the aftermath of the Coronavirus affliction would require new knowledge and new skill sets and, hence, all countries shall strive to transform their education systems in the face of the emerging postCOVID world. The world will no longer be the same to which all of us have been accus-
A new world order
tomed for generations. This is the time for individuals, families, communities, countries and international organisations to envision the measure and magnitude of the transition, be part of it and ensure that the rhythm of civilisational advancement is sustained. Just when the number of Corona positive cases had started indicating a downward trend, media reports about the detection of a new and more dangerous strain in the UK have practically numbed the world. Suddenly, the hope of the impending relief with the arrival of the anti-COVID vaccines has given way to disturbing apprehensions and uncertainty. A long battle ahead against the invisible, albeit life-threatening, adversary appears inevitable. It would need people of the highest talent, commitment, dedication and spirit of service, and it would need institutions of higher education and research to get ready at the optimum level of their efficiency to serve a global cause. There would be no institution of higher learning that could afford to ignore it in the totality of its functioning. The ray of hope, one would like to emphasize, lies in the fact that human ingenuity would finally win over. No calamity, violence, war or any pandemic could ever dampen the human spirit to confront it, to explore the man-nature relationship and persistently unearth deeper secrets of nature. This eternal human quest — symbolized by learning, re-learning and unlearning — shall continue with renewed vigor in the years ahead. It would be sustained by the dynamic education policies that would be subjected to serious transformations imposed by the pandemic.
India came out with a much-delayed new education policy that underwent finalization in the thick of the Coronavirus crisis; thus enhancing its relevance and readiness for a pragmatic, quick and sustained response. The National Education Policy (NEP2020) presents a lofty transformational vision and strategically indicates how to move ahead. One could scrutinize it for the inclusion of experiences and its potential to comprehend the emerging aspirations and expectations of people. These shall have to be achieved by the education system through enhanced levels of quality, dynamic skill acquisition, appropriate personality development, character building, innovations and research, and everything else that is part of the man-making education. Going ahead, the NEP-2020 shall be continuously assessed in its epistemological strength on the premise that Swami Vivekananda had put before India more than 125 years ago: “We must have life-building, man-making, character-making assimilation of ideas.” This, he taught us, is the summum bonum of education, an education that aims at developing an individual’s personality. He firmly deprecated the practice of education that drives into the minds “of the learner a mass of information in which he may develop no interest”. The individuality of every child is to be comprehended and respected as a living and growing up entity with innate capacities and potentialities, which are to be drawn out. When the “Report to UNESCO of the International Commission on Education for the Twenty-First Century” was presented
under the title “Learning: The Treasure Within”, it accepted the philosophical base that Indian thinkers have propounded since the ancient times. There are no limits to learning and growing up. These elements need to be integral ingredients in the implementation of the NEP-2020. The Indian education system suffered as it ignored the much-needed transition in strategy at the time of Independence and opted for the convenience of continuing with the transplanted system. In spite of commendable expansion in access and participation, India’s youth had to wade through the dilution of quality, inadequacy of personality development, lack of self-confidence, disturbing levels of inadequacy of entrepreneurial spirit and the spirit of caring and sharing. The gap between the learner attainment and the level required/ expected has become worrisome. On the positive side, India learnt from its lapses and the NEP-2020 responds to the challenges as it opens its first chapter with the words: “Education is fundamental for achieving full human potential, developing an equitable and just society, and promoting national development. Providing universal access to quality education is the key to India’s continued ascent and leadership on the global stage in terms of economic growth, social justice, equality, scientific advancement, national integration and cultural preservation. Universal high-quality education is the best way forward for developing and maximizing our country’s rich talents and resources for the good of the individual, the society, the country and for the world.” The youth
of India have the added responsibility of acquiring the highest levels of competence, knowledge and entrepreneurial skills in the global context and requirement. Our global presence would be a great opportunity to put India at the high pedestal on the world’s stage. India’s youth abroad should be responsible ambassadors of its culture, history and heritage. India needs to uplift its institutions to the level of Taxila, Nalanda, Vikramshila, Vallabhi and suchlike. The NEP-2020 acknowledges it and inspires India’s youth to march ahead on the path of excellence. It recalls the contributions made by the luminaries in the fields of mathematics, astronomy, metallurgy, medical sciences, engineering, architecture, ship-building, navigation and many others. The traditional Indian education system produced scholars, researchers, scientists and philosophers of the highest calibre; whose contributions were indeed astounding for their times, and continue to serve humanity even at this juncture. Can anyone in the modern civilised world ignore the contributions of Ar yabhatta, Varahmihir, Bhaskaracharya, Brahmagupta, Chanakya, Patanjali, Panini, Maitreyi, Gargi, Thiruvalluvur and Gautama et al? Their contributions and exemplary dedication and devotion were worthy of acharyas. The NEP-2020 has prepared the necessary outline and strategy for the same. The challenge of implementation is facing the nation and the extent of success at another milestone would really make a difference. The prime acceptors of the challenges that would unfold at
the implementation stage would be teacher educators, teachers and teacher education institutions. They would determine the quality of the persons coming out of the schools and universities. The NEP-2020 takes a comprehensive view on the role of teachers: “The teacher must be at the centre of the fundamental reforms in education system. The new education policy must help re-establish teachers, at all levels, as the most respected and essential members of our society, because they truly reshape the upcoming generations of citizens. It must do everything to empower teachers and help them do their job as effectively as possible. The new education policy must help recruit the very best and the brightest to enter the teaching profession at all levels by ensuring livelihood, respect, dignity and autonomy while also instilling in the system basic quality control and accountability.” The effective implementation of the NEP2020 would be possible only through a transformed work culture that respects the learner, his sensitivities, aspirations and expectations. This can be achieved only with the teachers who are lifelong learners and personally convinced of their role as the builders of “New India”. Only they would be able to transform the learning environment, in which every child who enters the system is well looked after, her/his talent and interests are nourished and nurtured and s/he is prepared to enter the world of employment fully equipped professionally, mentally and spiritually. Punjab MPs Ravneet Singh Bittu, Jasbir Singh Gill and Gurjit Singh Aujla, along with some of the party MLAs including Kulbir Singh Zira have been sitting on a dharna at Jantar Mantar for the last 32 days in support of the farmers and seeking repeal of the farm laws. The meeting of protesting Punjab leaders with Priyanka Gandhi took place at Rahul Gandhi’s residence. Rahul Gandhi took to Twitter to seek the support of party leaders in favour of farmers. “The Modi government has betrayed the ‘Annadata’ of the country for the benefit of their capitalist friends. The farmers have spoken through their agitation. It is the duty of all of us to raise the voice of the ‘annadata’ and support their demands,” he said in a tweet
in Hindi. “Peaceful agitation is an integral part of democracy. The farmers’ movement is getting the support from all over the country. You too should raise your voice in support of them and strengthen the voice of farmers so that the anti-agricultural laws are repealed,” he said in another tweet. Congress leaders participated in the online campaign in support of the farmers by putting out their videos on Twitter and sought support for the agitating farmers. Farmers have been protesting at the borders of Delhi for the past over 40 days in support of their demands, which mainly includes the repeal of the three farm laws. They are also engaged in talks with the government to find a solution to their demands and held the eighth round of talks at Vigyan Bhawan on Friday afternoon.

Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Sankalp Sharma said the sub-inspector in-charge of the area, Amarjit Singh, was suspended on Friday. The station house officer (SHO) of the Ughaiti police station, Raghvendra Pratap, was suspended earlier for a “delay in informing higher authorities, laxity in taking action, dereliction of duty and failure in taking speedy action” and a case under IPC section 166A (public servant disobeying
law) has been registered against the two officers. They had informed senior officials about the incident after a delay of 17 hours, the SSP said. He said the priest is being questioned and further action will be taken in accordance with the information provided by him. Some more people are on police radar and they are also being questioned, the SSP said, adding that all the angles are being looked into and the case will be solved soon. The priest will be taken for a medical examination

There is no other solution,” she told the protesting legislators during her meeting with them. “We have always stood

India was the first country in the world to take note of the pandemic on January 6, 2020 and launch into action. A year of action has led to the country having one million testing kits per day from a mere one when the pandemic started. India has the highest recovery rate and the lowest fatality rate and almost all those infected got treated and returned home. The scientists and medical fraternity besides those in diverse fields rose to the occasion and displayed exemplary dedication and commitment. “We are able to export PPE kits, N95 masks and ventilators - almost everything that people used to talk about shortage then. Things transformed for the better due to the inspiration given by the prime minister for the development of Atma Nirbhar Bharat,” Harsh Vardhan said.

CHENNAI, JAN 8 (PTI): Union Health and Family Welfare Minister Dr Harsh Vardhan on Friday said soon it would be a reality to vaccinate the entire population in the country against COVID-19 after prioritising risk groups. The Centre has started a new COVID platform to track particulars of potential vaccine beneficiaries and also issue electronic certificates to them, he told reporters after reviewing the dry run of administering COVID-19 vaccine at the Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital here as part of a state-wide programme. India, he said, has done extremely well in developing vaccines in the shortest possible time, and presently two vaccines have been given emergency use authorisation. “In the next few days, also in the near future, we should be able to give this vaccine to our countrymen prioritising those who are at risk in public and private

The government said that in Haryana, there has been confirmation of Avian Influenza positive samples from ICAR-NIHSAD in poultry (two poultry farms) of the Panchkula district. Positive samples have also been reported in migratory birds in the Junagadh district, Gujarat, and in crows in Sawai Madhopur, Pali, Jaisalmer and Mohar districts of Rajasthan. The assertion of Vijayvargiya, the BJP’s West Bengal in-charge, came days after Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee agreed to implement the central scheme in the state, under which farmers get Rs 6,000 a year in three equal instalments. The decision of the Trinamool Congress supremo, taken months before the assembly election, is being seen as a move to blunt the BJP’s accusation that her party is preventing farmers of the state from getting benefits of the scheme. “Farmers of Bengal

The Centre had on Wednesday had said that avian influenza or bird flu outbreak has been reported at 12 epicentres in Kerala, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Himachal Pradesh, while Haryana is on high alert due to unusual mortality at poultry farms in Panchkula. Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia had said on Thursday that there is no case of bird flu in Delhi yet and asked officials to keep a close watch on poultry birds coming in from neighbouring states to prevent any infection. Eleven rapid response teams have been set up to monitor Delhi’s potential hotspots, officials said. Mumbai attack mastermind and LeT Trump condemns mayhem by supporters commander Lakhvi gets 15-yr jail term Pledges smooth transition of power to Joe Biden
WASHINGTON, JAN 8 (PTI/AGENCIES): Donald Trump has finally condemned the mayhem caused by his supporters in the US Capitol, saying they do not represent America, as the beleaguered president vowed to ensure a “smooth, orderly and seamless” transition of power to Presidentelect Joe Biden. In a new video message, a day after he urged the crowds to head for the Capitol, where they forced their way inside, Trump said America is, and must always be a nation of law and order. “Like all Americans, I am outraged by the violence, lawlessness and mayhem. I immediately deployed the national guard and federal law enforcement to secure the building and expel the intruders,” Trump said in the recorded video posted on YouTube on Thursday and released by the White House. The demonstrators who infiltrated the Capitol have defiled the seat of
Prominent HK pro-democracy activist arrested HONG KONG, JAN 8 (IANS): Joshua Wong, a prominent Hong Kong pro-democracy activist, was arrested on Friday over “subverting the state power” under the national security law which China imposed in the city last year. Opposition politician Tam Tak-chi was also arrested along with Wong, who was the head of disbanded Demosisto -- a pro-democracy group advocating the city’s independence, Xinhua news agency reported. Both Wong and Takchi have already been put in jail. Wong was sentenced to 13 and a half months in prison last month for besieging the police headquarters in June 2019, and Tam is awaiting trial behind bars for multiple offenses. In August 2020, the 27-year-old activist was also charged for participating in a banned vigil marking the anniversary of the 1989 Tiananmen Square crackdown in China. The national security law was enacted in Hong Kong in June 30, 2020, to ban acts of secession, subversion, terrorism and collusion with foreign forces.
American democracy, he said. “To those who engaged in the acts of violence and destruction, you do not represent our country. And to those who broke the law, you will pay. We have just been through an intense election and emotions are high, but now tempers must be cooled, and calm restored,” he said. Delivered in monotone and read from a teleprompter, Trump’s remarks bore little resemblance to those on Wednesday, in which he told his rioting supporters, “We love you.” In an unprecedented assault on democracy in the US, thousands of supporters of outgoing President Trump stormed the Capitol building on Wednesday and clashed with police, resulting in four deaths and interrupting a constitutional process by Congress to affirm the victory of Biden and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris in the November 3 election. Trump, who is facing pressure from members of his Republican Party and a pontential impeachment, also accepted the result of the election and

pledged a smooth transition of power to Biden. Biden will be sworn in as the 46th US President on January 20. Amidst the chaos and violence, US Congress on Thursday early morning verified the Electoral College victory of Biden and Harris. “Now, Congress has certified the results a new administration will be inaugurated on January 20th. My focus now turns to ensuring a smooth, orderly and seamless transition of power,” Trump said. “We must get on with the business of America. My campaign vigorously pursued every legal avenue to contest the election results. My only goal was to ensure the integrity of the vote and so doing, I was
fighting to defend American democracy,” said the outgoing president. Trump said that he continues to strongly believe that the US must reform election laws to verify the identity and eligibility of all voters and to ensure faith and confidence in all future elections. Observing that the moment calls for healing and reconciliation, Trump said that 2020 has been a challenging time for Americans. “A menacing pandemic has upended the lives of our citizens, isolated millions in their homes, damaged our economy and claimed countless lives,” he said. “Defeating this pandemic and rebuilding the greatest economy on earth will require all of us working together. It will require a renewed emphasis on the civic values of patriotism, faith, charity, community, and family,” he said. Earlier, White House Press Secretary Kayleigh McEnany told reporters that the violence at the Capitol Hill was appalling, reprehensible, and antithetical to the American way.
Won’t attend Biden’s inauguration ceremony
President Donald Trump says he would not attend President-elect Joe Biden’s Inauguration on January 20, 2021. He will be the first incumbent president since Andrew Johnson to skip his successor’s inauguration. In a Friday tweet Trump said, “To all of those who have asked, I will not be going to the Inauguration on January 20th.” Trump offered no clues for how he would spend his final hours in office. Biden would become president at noon regardless of Trump’s plans. With 12 days left in his term, President Donald Trump has finally bent to reality amid growing talk of trying to force him out early, acknowledging he would peacefully leave after Congress affirmed his defeat. Trump led off a video from the White House Thursday by condemning the violence carried out in his name a day earlier at the Capitol.
US Amb to UN to visit Taiwan; China threatens ‘heavy price’
United Nations, Jan 8 (PTI): US Ambassador to the UN Kelly Craft will travel to Taiwan and reinforce the US government's "strong and ongoing support" for Taipei's international space, a visit China says it “firmly opposes” and warned that Washington will “pay a heavy price for its wrong action.” The US Mission to the UN said in a statement on Thursday that Craft will travel to Taipei on January 13-15 for meetings with senior Taiwan counterparts and members of the diplomatic community. “During her trip, the
Ambassador will reinforce the US government's strong and ongoing support for Taiwan's inter national space,” the statement said. Craft will also deliver remarks on January 14 at the Institute of Diplomacy and International Affairs on Taiwan's “impressive contributions” to the global community and the “importance of Taiwan's meaningful and expanded participation in international organisations. The Chinese mission to the UN said Beijing “firmly opposes” Craft's visit to Taiwan. "There is only one
China in the world and the Taiwan region is an inalienable part of China's territory. The Government of the People's Republic of China is the sole legal government representing the whole China,” a spokesperson of the Permanent Mission of China to the United Nations said in a statement. The spokesperson added that the United States made an explicit commitment on this in the three China-US joint communiqués, including the 1979 Joint Communiqué on the Establishment of Diplomatic Relations.
“The United States will not succeed in its attempt to harm China's core interests through political manipulation on the Taiwan question. We wish to remind the United States that whoever plays with fire will burn himself. “The United States will pay a heavy price for its wrong action. China strongly urges the United States to stop its crazy provocation, stop creating new difficulties for China-US relations and the two countries' cooperation in the United Nations, and stop going further on the wrong path,” the spokesperson said.
LAHORE, JAN 8 (PTI): Mumbai attack mastermind and Lashkar-e-Taiba operations commander Zakiur-Rehman Lakhvi was sentenced to 15 years in jail on Friday by a Pakistani anti-terrorism court here in a terror financing case. UN proscribed terrorist Lakhvi, 61, who was on bail since 2015 in the Mumbai attack case, was arrested by the Counter-Terrorism Department (CTD) of Punjab province on Saturday. “The Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) Lahore convicted Lakhvi for commission of offences of terrorism financing in a case registered by the CTD for 15 years under different sections of the Anti-Terrorism Act 1997,” a court official told PTI after the hearing. Judge Ejaz Ahmad Buttar sentenced Lakhvi to five years of rigorous imprisonment each on three counts with a fine of PKR 100,000 (approximately USD 620) each on three counts. “In default of payment of fine, he will have to un-

dergo an imprisonment of six months each on three counts. He has been sent to prison to serve the sentences,” the official said. Lakhvi pleaded before the court that he was “falsely implicated” in this case. The LeT commander was accused of running a dispensary and using funds collected for terrorism financing. “He and others also collected funds from this dispensary and used these funds for further terrorism financing. He also used these funds for personal expenses,” the CTD said. Interestingly, Lakhvi was presented before the
Lahore ATC on Friday and was convicted the same day in the terror financing case registered against him some time ago. The court was told that Lakhvi, a resident of Renal Khurd Okara district of Punjab, was living in Islamabad before his arrest in this case. Lakhvi was designated as a global terrorist by the UN in December 2008 for being associated with LeT and al-Qaeda and for “participating in the financing, planning, facilitating, preparing or perpetrating of acts by, in conjunction with, under the name of, on behalf or in support of ” both the entities. Proscribed terrorists and entities are subject to an assets freeze, wherein all states are required to freeze funds and other financial assets or economic resources of designated individuals and entities, a travel ban that prevents the entry into or transit through nations’ territories by the designated individuals and an arms embargo.

SYDNEY, JAN 8 (IANS): A brilliant all-round performance by Ravindra Jadeja, followed by a superb half century by Shubman Gill ensured India won Day Two honours of the ongoing third Test against Australia at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG). After bowling out Australia for 338, Gill and
Rohit Sharma gave India a solid start as they not only played cautiously but scored runs at a decent rate during the course of their 70-run opening partnership. Rohit, who was playing international cricket after a long time, looked in good touch during the course of his 77-ball knock.
However, after scoring 24 runs with the help of three fours and a six, he got out caught & bowled by Josh Hazlewood. That wicket didn’t deter Gill -- playing only his second Test match -- as the youngster kept scoring boundaries and impressed many with his shots and went on to score his maid-
Rijiju, Shelar bat for restoration of railway concession for sportspersons Mumbai, Jan 8 (IANS): After Union sports minister Kiren Rijiju, former Maharashtra sports minister Ashish Shelar has also requested Union railways minister Piyush Goyal to restore the fare concessions for athletes travelling for various sports meets. The concessions, across 38 categories which include sportspersons and senior citizens, were stopped by the railways ministry through its circular on March 19, 2020 in a move to discourage train journey and contain the spread of Covid-19. With sporting activity resuming in the country now, a large number of sportspersons are heavily dependent on the railways for their travel and the fare concessions help state associations ease the financial burden of sending their athletes for various all India, state and national events. Shelar, a former Mumbai Cricket Association president and BJP leader, wrote

a letter to Goyal and spoke with him expressing his concern about the sportspersons. The 48-year-old, contesting for the Boxing Federation of India (BFI) president’s post in their upcoming polls, feels he was duty-bound to address this issue. “It is a genuine concern of our sportspersons, which I have taken up at the highest level. I am confident of a positive response soon,” he said in an official statement. In his letter to Goyal, Shelar wrote: “As sporting activity resumes across the country, complying with all Covid-19 norms of course, sportspersons are looking to travel from one city to another,
from one town to another, to compete in various tournaments and competitions. In addition, many youngsters, boys and girls, need to travel for training, coaching and attending camps.” “May I bring to your attention the fact that due to withdrawal of travel concessions, there is a great financial burden on the sportspersons and their respective sports federations. I would appreciate if the railway ministry restores travel concession for all sportspersons to support their sporting endeavours,” he added. On Thursday, Rijiju had also written to Goyal, requested him to restore the privileges. In a letter to Goyal, Rijiju wrote: “Now, since the training and sports competitions have started, the sports persons are facing difficulties due to withdrawal of the concession in passenger fares while travelling to participate in all India, state and national level tournaments.”

impressive bowling display by Australia. India reached 96/2 at Stumps -- having Rahane and Pujara unbeaten on 5 and 9 respectively -- and still trail by 242 runs. Jasprit Bumrah and Navdeep Saini picked two wickets each while Mohammed Siraj scalped one. Ace off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin, however, went wicket-less in the 24 overs he bowled and conceded 74 runs.
