Centre worried about rising Covid cases
New Delhi, MAR 11 (AGENCEIS): In a major cause of concerns for the Centre and medical authorities, India on Thursday registered close to 23,000 new Covid-19 cases in a single day, the highest in the past two and half months and around 5,000 more than the previous day’s cases. Union Health ministry Thursday said that there was a steep rise in active cases across India after touching the lowest mark in mid-February. The Union health secretary said that in states where a surge has been seen, it was also found that their testing and contact tracing had gone down. Kerala had reported the maximum fall in active cases, while Maharashtra had shown the maximum hike in active cases in the past 24 hours. India’s total active caseload now is 1,89,226 – that is 1.68 per cent of the nation’s total positive cases. Delhi recorded 409 new Covid19 cases, the highest single-day rise in nearly two months, while the positivity rate rose to 0.59 per cent. Dr V.K. Paul, the Niti Aayog’s member (health), said the Centre was very worried about the situation in Maharashtra, where eight big cities have a high number of active cases.
These are Pune, Nagpur, Thane, Mumbai, Amravati, Jalgaon, Nashik and Aurangabad. “We are very worried about Maharashtra. This is a serious matter. This has two lessons – don’t take the virus for granted, and if we have to be Covid-free, then we need to follow Covid-appropriate behaviour,” said Dr Paul. In a bid to check the surge in Maharashtra, state chief minister Uddhav Thackeray has warned that strict lockdown measures will be enforced in parts of the state. A week-long lockdown has already been announced in Nagpur from March 15 to 21 to contain the spread of the virus. Maharashtra, Kerala, Punjab, Karnataka, Gujarat and Tamil Nadu continue to report a high number of daily new Covid-19 cases. The six states account for 85.91 per cent of the 22,854 new cases reported in the past 24 hours. The experts have expressed a number of possibilities which could be owed to the stride ranging from the lax attitude of people towards following Covid protocols to the likeability of “mutations and new strains” causing the surge.

NJCF calls for State-wide prayer on Mar 20 Nationwide bank strike on March 15-16 DIMAPUR, MAR 11 (NPN): Nagaland Joint Christian Forum (NJCF) has called upon all denominations to hold a day of prayer on March 20, from 6 a.m. to 12 noon for confession, repentance and for the Naga political solution. NJCF has also appealed to denominations in Naga inhabited areas in other parts of the North East to also participate in the prayer day. According to a letter to heads of various denominations, NJCF vice president Rev. Dr. N Paphino said Nagas were in distress situation. “The Naga political settlement which we term it as ‘solution’ is creating fear and uncertainty in the minds of our people.” NJCF said hard talks, hard disagreements, hard accusations and counter accusations and many others have become the order of the day.
NJCF said that “in our selfishness and pride, stubbornness and arrogance, we are losing sight of the main issue. We blame others of the ‘divide and rule’ policy but we have comfortably become proponents of this ideology by trying to eliminate each other in self righteousness. The common people are becoming impatient and downcast.” With speculations doing the round, NJCF said fear and terror was knocking at the door. “In a situation such as this, we can only turn to God for help and direction,” it added. “...Our leaders cannot turn their deaf ear to the wishes of common people who have been praying for them for many years. We have believed in them and have supported them through thick and thin. It is now time for them to deliver to the people by coming together,” it said.
NEW DELHI, MAR 11 (AGENCIES): United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU), an umbrella body of nine unions have called for a nationwide strike on March 15 and 16 against central government’s move to privatise public sector banks. “We have been advised by Indian Banks Association (IBA) that United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU) has given a call for an all-India strike by bank employees on 15th and 16th March 2021,” SBI said in a regulatory filing on Wednesday, according to Hindustan Times. SBI also said that the bank has made arrangements
for the normal functioning in all branches and offices, but it added that the work may be impacted by the strike. Meanwhile, ahead of the strike, banks are scheduled to be closed on March 13 i.e. second Saturday and March 14 i.e. Sunday. Union Finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman, while presenting Union Budget in February this year, had announced the privatisation of public sector banks as part of the government’s disinvestment drive to generate Rs 1.75 lakh crore. “Other than IDBI Bank, we propose to take up the privatisation of two PSBs and one
general insurance company in the year 2021-22,” Sitharaman had said. UFBU comprises of All India Bank Employees’ Association, All India Bank Officers’ Confederation, National Confederation of Bank Employees, All India Bank Officers’ Association, Bank Employees Federation of India, Indian National Bank Employees Federation, Indian National Bank Officers’ Congress, National Organisation of Bank Workers, and National Organisation of Bank Officers. The government last year had also merged 10 public sector banks into four, bringing down their number from 27 in March 2017 to 12.
Unsettled dispute could affect NH-129A project: ZCN TVAC refutes claims of DIMAPUR, MAR 11 (NPN): Welcoming the alignment of NH129A connecting Maram in Manipur to Dimapur that will now pass through Peren district, Zeme Council Nagaland (ZCN) has however expressed fear that “intractable” unsettled land dispute with “western Sumi brothers” could ultimately kill the project even before it could take off as it feared that the land dispute was not going to end anytime soon. In a statement, ZCN recalled that due to the unsettled land dispute on the stretch of about 13 km in MhainamtsiPimla alignment of the road, all Peren district landown-
ers withdrew Right Of Way (ROW) on February 4, 2019 to even forego the dream project in favour of land. Considering the reality of ground situation and in order that the project was executed for the benefit of all, ZCN said the State government gave approval for the dispute-free alignment connecting Peren to Dimapur via Heningkunglwa to Union ministry of road transport & highways. The council clarified that this would benefit not only one or two villages as alleged, but all the recognised villages of Mhainamtsi, Lamhai, Dungki, Kiyevi, Heningkunglwa, Ngwalwa, Ngwalwa Town

Security forces have attacked previous protests with live ammunition as well, leading to the deaths of about 60 people. They have also employed tear gas, rubber bullets, water cannons and stun grenades. Many demonstrators have been brutally beaten. In New York, the UN Security Council on Wednesday unanimously called for a reversal of the military coup and strongly condemned the violence against peaceful protesters. It also called for “utmost restraint” by the military. A presidential statement approved by all 15 council members was formally adopted at a virtual meeting. The British-drafted statement calls for the immediate release of government leaders including Suu Kyi and Win Myint. and Virazouma. ZCN termed the allegation of Aqahuto area organisations in their February 26, 2021 representation to Union Road Transport & Highways minister Nitin Gadkari , that change of alignment was the handiwork of high functionaries in the State government, as “not only fabricated, but also malicious”. ZCN said not only the State government, but even all the landowners of Peren district knew that changing alignment again at this juncture, when the executing agency has issued tender notices and the tender process was over, would mean scrapping the
project altogether from Peren onwards. ZCN said it was clarifying the matter so that nobody could take undue advantage and sabotage the project. It also expressed gratefulness to Gadkari under the dynamic leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi for sanctioning various road projects in the State. ZCN also said NH129A was a dream-come-true for the people of Peren district, which has been neglected by subsequent governments and reducing it to one of the poorly connected districts in spite of its close proximity to Kohima and Dimapur.
stone pillars at border
DIMAPUR, MAR 11 (NPN): The boundary dispute between Khezhakeno village in Phek district and Tungjoy village in Manipur’s Senapati district is showing no signs of abating with Tungjoy Village Authority Council (TVAC) now disputing the claim of stone pillars having been erected by Captain Butler and Dr Gordon in 1872 by Khezhakeno villagers. Reacting to news items published in this regard on March 6, TVAC chairman MS Marcus in a statement termed the claim as not only misleading but also distorting the truth of land in question. TVAC claimed that neither Captain Butler nor Dr Gordon or any other British officer made any survey of the land. The council said as head hunting prevailing during those days among different villages did not allow free movement of British administrators, the question of erecting stone pillars by the British (Cont’d on p-8) did not arise.

Zhaleo Rio with members of Zeal SHG while handing over the seed money to them.
DIMAPUR: Advisor, Sericulture, Excise & Minority Affairs,Zhaleo Rio (IAS Retd) has assured assistance and upgradation if farmers and the Self Help Groups (SHGs)could coordinate to make the “silk spinning unit” a progressive and productive centre. He was speaking at a launching programme for Zeal SHG Medziphema’s “Silk Spinning Unit” on March 11 in the presence of government officials, leaders and farmers at Medziphema Town. “Silk Spinning Unit” was sponsored by department of Sericulture, government of Nagaland. Speaking as the special
guest, Zhaleo felicitated both the Sericulture department and Zeal SHG for successfully establishing the unit and urged the members to contribute their best so the unit may be upgraded at a later stage. “It is an auspicious occasion for Medziphema sub-division since silkworm farmers will benefit the most through the unit,” he stated. Rio reminded that farmers play pivotal role in all agri and allied activities. While requesting the depar tment to provide quality seeds for plantation which also give good prices for eri produce like cocoons, he urged the farm-
ers to begin groundworks by clearing fields to avail maximum benefits during peak season. Hinting that the government alone can never employ every individual today, Rio reiterated that private sectors are a boon for employment and cited that silkworm rearing is one alternative where “the whole family can work together at home with ease.” Rio added that they take only 15-30 days for maturity to spin cocoons depending on season and as such, are excellent source of extra income which can be started as hobby or part-time jobs by anyone. Akhil Gogoi takes back NEP-2020 is an India centric Return of Sonowal govt in Assam candidature from Mariani education policy: Manipur CM a foregone conclusion: Jitendra To contest only from Sivasagar seat Correspondent
Jitendra Singh with Sarbananda Sonowal. Guwahati, Mar 11 (PTI): Union minister Jitendra Singh on Thursday said the return of the Sarbananda Sonowal government in Assam with a decisive mandate is a foregone conclusion due to the all-round development carried out by it in the last five years and restoration of peace in the state. Singh, Union Minister for Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER), also said that the BJP-led government under Prime Minister Narendra Modi had successfully pulled out Assam from a long night-
mare of insurgency, road blockades, violence and misgovernance. “If you ask the common man in the streets, he will tell you without any doubt that the return of the BJP government is a foregone conclusion,” he told reporters here. Singh, who has been campaigning for the BJP for the coming Assam assembly elections, said there has been a perfect coordination between the Centre and the state after the Sonowal government came to power five years ago. In the last five years,
Efforts to cancel illegal plot on AR land in Aizawl: minister
Aizawl, Mar 11 (PTI): The Mizoram government is making efforts to cancel all pattas (land rights) allotted illegally to individuals for owning land in a plot of Aizawl where Assam Rifles headquarters is located, the assembly was informed on Thursday. Land Revenue and Settlement Minister Lalruatkima said that the state Cabinet in March 2019 had decided to cancel all Land Settlement Certificates (LSCs) given to private parties who are occupying plots at Lammual area or the Assam Rifles ground in Aizawl.
He said that the central committee of the Young Mizo Association, the largest civil society organisation in the state, has filed Public Interest Litigation in a court challenging the land rights of individuals at Lammual. The government is yet to cancel the land pattas allotted to those individuals as it is waiting for the court judgment, he said. The Assam Rif les headquarters has been located in the heart of Aizawl since 1917. It has bases at Zodin (Lammual) and Khatla area in the state capital.
the minister said, many of the central schemes and centrally funded projects have been fast-tracked. This also reflected in the excellent management of COVID pandemic, which was evidently better in Assam, compared to many other states of the country, he said. Singh said the BJP is a 24x7 cadre based political party and not a seasonal outfit like the Congress. He said under Prime Minister Modi, everyone has worked round-the-clock for the last seven years to bring about transformation in Assam, which the people of the state have witnessed and that precisely is the basis of the party’s confidence that the BJP-led government would return to power second time with a “decisive mandate”. He said, over the last seven years, there was not a single week or a fortnight, when he personally did not visit the northeastern region and under the instructions of Modi, eight Union ministers were visiting different regions of the Northeast every fortnight.
File photo of Akhil Gogoi. Guwahati, Mar 11 (PTI): The newly floated Raijor Dal on Thursday announced that its chief and jailed anti-CAA activist Akhil Gogoi will withdraw his nomination from Mariani constituency and contest only from Sivasagar seat. Addressing a press conference here, Raijor Dal Working President Bhasco De Saikia said the decision to withdraw Gogoi’s nomination from Mariani was taken primarily to ensure defeat of the BJP from the constituency. “Though Akhil Gogoi would have won Mariani very easily as it is his home constituency, but we took this decision only to help form an anti-BJP govern-
ment in Assam. “Our this step has now ensured that BJP will be defeated in Mariani,” he added. Congress has fielded its sitting MLA Rupjyoti Kurmi from Mariani and it was anticipated that he would have a direct contest with Gogoi. With Gogoi leaving Mariani, the three-time heavyweight Congress MLA will now have a direct fight with BJP’s Ramani Tanti, a lesser known face. Gogoi had also filed nomination from Sivasagar constituency, from where he will contest, Saikia told reporters here. Sivasagar and Mariani are going to polls in the first phase on March 27.

Shillong, Mar 11: Meghalaya’s opposition Congress on Thursday decided to move a breach of privilege motion against Chief Minister Conrad Sangma for “misleading the House” on the Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) signed between the National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) and the erstwhile Congress-led Government in 2007. “The Opposition would move breach of privilege motion against the Chief Minister during the ongoing Budget Session. The Chief Minister with a predetermined motive had tried to misinform and mislead the
House,” Leader of Opposition Dr. Mukul M. Sangma told reporters after Speaker Metbah Lyngdoh adjourned the House for the day. Chief Minister Conrad Sangma had on Tuesday blamed the previous Congress-MDA government in 2007 for signing a lopsided PPA with NTPC. Under the clauses of the agreement, Chief Minster had told members of the assembly that the State has to pay a “fixed charge” of Rs. 11 crore every month, even if the State didn’t purchase power from NTPC. However, the Leader of Opposition maintained that there was no mention about the Rs 11 crore required to
be paid by the State Government. “They (government) were trying to play to the gallery, but the worst thing is that they they have misinformed which amounts to breach of privilege of the House,” the former Congress Chief Minister said. “This was done with sheer malafide and pre-determined intent to engage in another narrative and hide the facts. This attempt to mislead and misinform the House coming from none other than the leader of the House,” Mukul asserted. Earlier, while taking part in a short duration discussion on the prevailing power crisis in the State, the veteran Congress legislator
came down heavily on the government for “creating a mess” in the power sector. The Congress legislator also alleged rampant corruption in the department and sought answers from the power minister as to why various viable projects of the previous government were shelved. Countering the Chief Minister claims that the PPA agreement with NTPC was a “lopsided” one, Sangma, who was the then power minister who signed the agreement, alleged that the Chief Minister has not done his homework with regards to the agreement signed in 2007. “Has the Chief Minister read every page of the

Exams to be conducted by Board of Secondary Education Manipur (BoSEM) and Council of Higher Secondary Education Manipur (CoHSEM) are to commence from the first week of May this year as the Manipur government has cleared the desk to conduct the exams. “We don’t want repetition of such ugly practices
in the upcoming exams. We want the law before the exams,” he said He hoped that the government will enact the law before the upcoming exams so that earlier instances of malpractices like question leakage can be checked effectively. The student activist observed that malpractices like question paper leaks were big crimes. Supporting, copying or leak of question papers by officials, teachers, parents or students should be considered as criminal, he said.

multiplexes. The chief minister said that the project was conceived two years ago and budget provisions were kept for procurement of the mobile theatres and training of personnel to run them. “Our main focus is to empower our rural citizens through educating them digitally besides providing some entertainment,” he said. The mobile theatres are equipped with V-SATS that offer internet connectivity anywhere. Khandu said special films will be screened educating people on the state as well as central government’s programmes and policies that will guide them to avail benefits from welfare schemes. “These mobile theatres will connect the rural populace with the government,” he claimed. Khandu said as a pilot project, five mobile digital movie theatres have been procured by the department
of Information and Public Relations (IPR) which would be dispatched to five different districts. “After about a year, we will study the feedbacks received and plan accordingly whether to procure more or not,” he said. To start with, the five districts to have the first mobile theatres are Lower Subansiri, Kurung Kumey, Namsai, East Siang and Tawang. For the first three months the theatres will be run by Picture Times. Meanwhile, local people will be trained, who will take over the theatres when the time comes. The theatres would also be available for use by other departments like Health, Education, Agriculture, Horticulture for their respective IEC campaigns in return for a minimal payment. IPR Minister Bamang Felix and Advisor Laisam Simai were also present on the occasion.

First Quad summit today
NEW DELHI, MAR 11 (PTI): In their first summit under the Quad framework on Friday, leaders of India, the US, Japan and Australia will deliberate on expanding cooperation in the IndoPacific region and focus on a coronavirus vaccine initiative to effectively deal with the pandemic, people familiar with the matter said. They said the virtual summit is expected to delve into pooling in individual strengths by the Quad countries to expedite global vaccine delivery and explore concrete collaboration in supplying safe and affordable vaccines in the IndoPacific region. The people said the Quad vaccine initiative will project and reinforce India’s credentials as a reliable manufacturer and supplier of the vaccines, reaffirming the country’s stature as the
“pharmacy of the world”. The summit will be participated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, US President Joe Biden, Australian PM Scott Morrison and Japanese PM Yoshihide Suga. Biden is attending the summit less than two months after he took charge as US President. It is learnt that a major deliverable at the summit will be the vaccine initiative under which vaccines against COVID-19 will be developed in the US, manufactured in India, financed by Japan and US, and supported by Australia. The people cited above said the leaders will discuss regional and global issues of shared interest, and exchange views on practical areas of cooperation towards maintaining a free, open and inclusive IndoPacific region. The summit is likely to exchange views on contemporary issues such as postpandemic recovery, resilient supply chains, emerging
and critical technologies, maritime security, and climate change. The four Quad member countries have been resolving to uphold a rulesbased international order in the Indo-Pacific amid growing Chinese assertiveness in the region. The foreign ministers of the Quad countries held a virtual meeting on February 18 during which they vowed to uphold a rules-based international order underpinned by respect for territorial integrity and sovereignty, freedom of navigation and peaceful resolution of disputes. India’s approach to the Indo-Pacific was enunciated by Modi in a speech at the Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore in 2018. Inclusiveness, openness and ASEAN centrality and unity lie at the heart of India’s Indo-Pacific vision. The evolving situation in the Indo-Pacific region in the wake of China’s increasing military muscle-flexing has become a major talking point among leading global powers. The US has been

SRINAGAR, MAR 11 (PTI): Two Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) militants were killed in an overnight encounter with security forces in Anantnag district of Jammu and Kashmir, police said on Thursday. The security forces launched a cordon and search operation at Kandipora in Bijbehara area of the district on Wednesday following information about presence of militants
there, a police official said. “During the search operation, as the presence of terrorists got ascertained they were given opportunity to surrender. However, they fired indiscriminately upon the joint search party, which was retaliated, leading to an encounter,” the official said. Due to darkness, the operation was suspended on Wednesday evening but the cordon remained intact
throughout night, he said. “Today in the morning, repeated announcements were again made to hiding terrorists to surrender, but the terrorists fired on joint search party and the fire was retaliated resulting in the elimination of two hiding terrorists,” he added. The slain militants have been identified as Adil Ahmad Bhat and Zahid Ahmad Rather. They were affiliated with proscribed outfit JeM. As per police records, the official said both the militants were involved in several terror crime cases, including attacks on security forces and civilian atrocities. “Incriminating materials, including arms & ammunition, were recovered from the site of encounter. favouring making Quad a security architecture to check China’s growing assertiveness. The foreign ministers of the Quad member nations met in Tokyo on October 6 and reaffirmed their collective vision for a free, open and inclusive IndoPacific. The foreign minister of the four countries held their first meeting under the Quadrilateral or Quad framework in New York in September 2019. In November 2017, India, Japan, the US and Australia gave shape to the long-pending proposal of setting up the Quad to develop a new strategy to keep the critical sea routes in the Indo-Pacific free of any influence. Prime Minister Modi and his Japanese counterpart Suga, during a telephonic conversation on Tuesday, shared the view that cooperation towards realising a free and open Indo-Pacific is becoming increasingly important, the Japanese foreign ministry said.

TMC-BJP clash over attack on Didi ‘Immobilised’ Mamata calls for peace
Mamata Banerjee admitted at SSKM hospital Wednesday. (PTI)
KO L K AT A / N A N D I GRAM, MAR 11 (PTI): She lay on a hospital bed, her left foot in plaster cast strung to an iron stand, but an “immobilised” Mamata Banerjee Thursday had West Bengal in ferment as supporters of her ruling TMC and rival BJP clashed over the alleged attack on her at Nandigram the day before. The BJP demanded a CBI inquiry over the alleged assault to ascertain if the incident was “staged”, while a high-level TMC delegation met the Chief Electoral Officer of the state and insisted the Election Commission cannot absolve itself of culpability, insisting that maintaining law and order was the EC’s responsibility once the election has been announced. Meanwhile, a case has been registered at Nandigram over the alleged attack under IPC sections 341 (punishment for wrongful restraint) and 323 (punishment for voluntarily causing hurt), a senior police officer of the Purba Medinipur district said. Banerjee, admitted to Kolkata’s SSKM Hospital following the incident, is “stable” but has pain in her injured leg, frontal head, and also has low sodium concentration in blood. “The chief minister has severe bony injuries in her left ankle and foot, besides injuries in right shoulder,
forearm and neck. She is stable now but is having severe pain in the injured leg,” a senior doctor at the staterun SSKM Hospital said. “The board of doctors evaluated her condition in the afternoon and have decided to conduct a further radiological investigation to exclude any pathology arising out of the post-traumatic syndrome,” he said. The doctors, however, insisted that the 66-year-old leader will not require a surgery. Enraged over the alleged assault on their leader in Nandigram, where she is crossing swords with her former aide Suvendu Adhikari of the BJP, Trinamool Congress workers took out protest rallies in several districts including parts of Kolkata, North 24 Parganas, Hooghly, Howrah, Birbhum, South 24 Parganas and Jalpaiguri. A scuffle broke out between the Trinamool Congress activists and a group of BJP workers in the Birulia area this morning but the situation was soon brought under control, police said. Arguably fighting its toughest election since Banerjee uprooted the Left rule in 2011, a TMC delegation met the Chief Electoral Officer and blamed the Election Commission for the fiasco. It insisted that giving protection to Banerjee was the EC’s responsibility since the law and order machin-
ery got arrogated to the central poll panel once a state assembly poll has been announced. Claiming that the attack was a “deep-rooted conspiracy to take the life of TMC supremo”, the TMC leaders said anti-social elements have been mobilised from the neighbouring states by the BJP in Nandigram to unleash violence. Accusing the EC of acting “as per orders” of the BJP leaders, the TMC delegation, after meeting the EC officials here, alleged that the Commission did nothing to prevent the attack despite reports of a possible assault on her. “The law and order situation in Bengal was good. But, after the announcement of elections, law and order has become EC’s responsibility. “The EC removed DGP of the state police, and the very next day she was attacked,” TMC secretarygeneral Partha Chatterjee said. West Bengal BJP chief Dilip Ghosh demanded a CBI probe in the incident, saying it needs to be seen whether the incident was a “well-scripted drama” to garner sympathy votes. The TMC, meanwhile, postponed the release of its election manifesto, scheduled for Thursday, following the incident. Meanwhile, Banerjee released a video message from her hospital bed, urging her supporters to be calm and maintain peace. “I would appeal to my party cadres, supporters, activists and common people to maintain peace and calm. It is true that I was badly hurt last night and felt severe pain in the chest and head. The doctors are looking after me,” she said. “I appeal to everyone to maintain peace. I hope to be back on the field in the next few days,” Banerjee said.

A fighter all the way
W
hile political opponents trade charges and counter charges on whether there was a conspiracy against West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee when she was severely injured on her ankle, shoulder and neck during an election rally in Nandigram; observers speculate on whether she would gain public sympathy. Mamata had her foot slammed by the SUV door by a surging crowd and also injured her shoulders and neck. However, in living up to her image as a fighter, the stormy petrel of Bengal politics has vowed to campaign from a wheelchair. Whether it was an incident or an accident, an injured Mamata, campaigning from a wheelchair is certainly something that her opponents would not be happy about. Mamata Banerjee has decided to also contest from Nandigram against her former close confidante Suvendu Adhikari who recently joined the BJP. The polling in Nandigram will be held on April 1 and it is expected to be ‘mother of all battles’ and now, the contest has become more challenging for the BJP as Banerjee’s ‘ankle injuries’ could be Suvendu Adhikari’s Achilles’ heel on poll day. Mamata on wheelchair would certainly evoke sympathy from the voters. On the other hand it is also a matter of debate whether those who have decided to not vote for TMC would be swayed by Mamata’s injury. Be that as it may, Mamata is indeed fighting the battle of her life against the might and power of the Modi government and the awesome electioneering machinery of the BJP in West Bengal. The BJP is emerging as a tough competitor for Mamata Banerjee (Didi) and her 10-year rule in the state. The strong presence of the Trinamool and now the increasing presence of the BJP seems to have marginalised the Left, which had ruled West Bengal for over 30 years, including the Congress, the latter of which had dominated Bengal politics since independence till the late 70s but today is consigned to the sidelines of Bengal politics. Mamata struck a deadly blow on the Left government that ruled Bengal for over 23 years in 2011. She returned with massive majority in 2016 and seeks to score a hattrick. The BJP has been luring defections from TMC, in the same manner that it has done in several states. In 2017 Mamata lost her trusted lieutenant Mukul Roy to BJP which served as an opening for BJP when it won 16 Lok Sabha seats in 2019. For years, more TMC leaders and members defected to BJP. India will witness whether Mamata can stop the ‘Juggernaut of Delhi’, with Modi, Amit Shah and entire cabinet along with their CMs and prominent leaders campaigning in the state and not to speak of central agencies probing TMC leaders. If the BJP wins in West Bengal, this will be the biggest victory by conquering the untouched fort of the state for the first time in India and will also have national impact. It will show the opposition that BJP is unbeatable and could result in toppling games in non-BJP ruled states. If TMC retains power with the BJP as the main opposition party, it will be a win-win situation for both. However, a win will propel Mamata to play a pivotal role in any ‘Third Front’ alliance. That can only be known after the 8-phase poll ends on April 29.
DailyDevotion Obedience to the “Heavenly Vision”
I was not disobedient to the heavenly vision. —Acts 26:19 If we lose “the heavenly vision” God has given us, we alone are responsible— not God. We lose the vision because of our own lack of spiritual growth. If we do not apply our beliefs about God to the issues of everyday life, the vision God has given us will never be fulfilled. The only way to be obedient to “the heavenly vision” is to give our utmost for His highest— our best for His glory. This can be accomplished only when we make a determination to continually remember God’s vision. But the acid test is obedience to the vision in the details of our everyday life— sixty seconds out of every minute, and sixty minutes out of every hour, not just during times of personal prayer or public meetings. “Though it tarries, wait for it…” (Habakkuk 2:3). We cannot bring the vision to fulfillment through our own efforts, but must live under its inspiration until it fulfills itself. We try to be so practical that we forget the vision. At the very beginning we saw the vision but did not wait for it. We rushed off to do our practical work, and once the vision was fulfilled we could no longer even see it. Waiting for a vision that “tarries” is the true test of our faithfulness to God. It is at the risk of our own soul’s welfare that we get caught up in practical busy-work, only to miss the fulfillment of the vision. Watch for the storms of God. The only way God plants His saints is through the whirlwind of His storms. Will you be proven to be an empty pod with no seed inside? That will depend on whether or not you are actually living in the light of the vision you have seen. Let God send you out through His storm, and don’t go until He does. If you select your own spot to be planted, you will prove yourself to be an unproductive, empty pod. However, if you allow God to plant you, you will “bear much fruit” (John 15:8). It is essential that we live and “walk in the light” of God’s vision for us (1 John 1:7).

T
GoI to moniter and regulate social media
he Government of India has recently come up with a new set of rules and regulations to regulate social media platforms, messages, services, Over the Top (OTT) platforms and news portals. The GoI had notified on 25-0220201, the Information Technology (Guidelines for Intermediaries and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021(Rules) in exercise of power under Section 87 of the Information Technology Act, 2000. It supersedes the previous Rules of 2011 which was holding the field. The President of India had issued Notification under Article 77 (3) of the Constitution of India on 09-11-2020 amending the GoI (Allocation of Business) Rules, 1961 which granted Minister of Information and Broadcasting, GoI the powers to regulate online new platforms and other OTT platforms. It shall come into force from the date it is publish in the Official Gazette. These Rules will require compliance even by foreign techgiants operating in India such as WhatsApp, Facebook, Tweeter, Netflix, Amazon etc. The Rules provides for physical presence, monitoring of harmful contents, tracking down the first originator of mischief and the voluntary veri-
I
A three-level grievance redressal mechanism has been established under the Rules with two levels of self-regulation. The Level –I comprise the publisher, Level –II comprise the self-regulatory body and the Level –III is the oversight mechanism under the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, GoI. The OTT platforms shall employ Chief Compliance Officer, Nodal Contact Person and a Resident Grievance Officer. They are duty bound under the Rules to examine all complaints in a time bound manner. The self-regulatory body shall be headed by a retired Judge of the Supreme Court or of a High Court or a person of eminence from the relevant field and can issue advisories to the publishers. There will be self-classification of content for OTT platforms including parental lock for content classified as U/A 13 + or higher. However, in the recent order of the Hon’ble Supreme Court in the Anticipatory Bail plea of India Amazon Prime head Aparna Purohit in the Tandav case, the Apex Court had opined that the Rules of 2021 may not be effective as they lack penal provision and have no teeth. The Supreme Court had asked the Government to consider framing more stringent
legislation or regulation. The identification of users, the disclosure of “first originator of mischief ” and monitoring of access to information by the Government are matters of grave concern for all users, keeping in view the right to privacy and the freedom of speech, expression and thoughts. Though the verification by user is voluntary under the Rules, it may still be a setback for user’s privacy. A platform’s use of personal information provided by the users are subject to the platform’s private policy and to which normally the users have no option but to consent. Also, information provided by the user for verification will simply become part of the data under the platform policy that platforms are entitled to collect and use. Such identification of a user brings into question the end-to-end encryption offered by services such as WhatsApp, Telegram, Signal etc. Whether, the crucial issue of identifying a user as the “first originator of mischief information” accurately by the platforms are practically possible or not?It may be a toll to harass the innocents. The self-regulatory body is not an independent body. The body shall be under the administrative control of the Govern-
ment of the day and which is crystal clear from the fact that under oversight mechanism – Level –III, the Government shall designate an Officer not below the rank of a Joint Secretary, as the authorized officer for the purpose of issuing direction for blocking for access by the public any information generated, transmitted, received, stored or hosted in any computer resource under sub-section (1) of Section 69A of the Information Technology Act. Also, the grievance redressal mechanism is executive in nature. It raises serious questions about the Government monitoring and regulating the social and digital media, keeping in view the political ideology, program of the Government of the day. It may be a deterrent to freedom of speech and expression. Digital media has given a voice to the common people to express their opinions and grievances to the Government of the day. In a democracy governed by the rule of law, their voices should not be muzzled under the garb of regulation. There should be a guaranteed check and balance subject to reasonable restrictions as provided under the Constitution. Taka Masa Ao, Sr. Advocate
Waiting for Government Job
understand that most people and, certainly, most parents in Nagaland prefer their children and relatives to acquire government jobs and become bureaucrats. But what are the societal implications of such beliefs and way of securing one’s daily bread. The problem is because most of us exclusively consign ourselves thinking about our own well-being, which is quite reasonable for people to do so, and not others, we refrain from asking ourselves unsettling questions that disturb our peace of mind and we even avoid thinking about the implications of our actions on the society. We generally tend to view society and government as a treasure chest to be looted and exploited, similar to how local business operators see tourists: money. But what are the consequences when we prioritize government jobs? Such questions make us realize that we’ve increasingly become a one-dimensional society focusing only on government bureaucracy and our dependence on it; while on the other hand neglecting other more fruitful avenues of genuine employment, progress, and development. Nagaland, at present, is suffering from “bureaucratic feudalism” a term coined by a historian of science to emphasize why China, despite its rich history and culture,
T
fications of users. It provides for grievances redressal mechanism with a self-regulatory body. The Rules also necessitates significant social intermediaries to have physical contact address in India, which is a significant implication for foreign players in terms of setting up infrastructures and deployment of resources and taxations. Social media intermediaries are now required to deploy technology – based measures, including automated tolls to identify information that depicts rape, child sexual abuse or conduct or information that has previously been removed. The Rules provides a mechanism for verification of user accounts, e.g. through mobile numbers. The verified users are to be identified by a demonstrable mark such as a tick or dot. A significant social media platform upon being asked by a Court order or order of the Government under Section 69 of the Information Technology Act will be required to disclose the first originator of mischievous tweet or message as the case maybe. However, this should be only in relation to sovereignty and integrity of India, the security of the state, public order, relations with foreign states, rape, sexually explicit contents and the likes.
failed to save itself from the Western colonial powers as almost all the brightest Chinese youths had their ambitions on becoming bureaucrats that ultimately led them to neglect science, modernization, reforms, and innovation. Similarly, most of the brightest students in Nagaland are only focused on becoming government bureaucrats. What a waste of talent; talents which these bright students can use to invent, innovate, and through private enterprise reform and contribute to the progress of the society. It is no wonder that the majority of students in Nagaland, in a one-dimensional manner, go for the arts stream, rather than the natural sciences— which are more or less neglected. The education system (that is, syllabi, teachers, and the institutions themselves) in Nagaland is geared to supply this one-dimensional demand for civil service exams: the golden rule being mindless and monotonous memorization of vast subjects and disciplines. Even those few students opting for medical science and engineering do so with the aim of becoming government bureaucrats, that is, government doctors and engineers—given the unchecked benefits and discretions they can exercise. Most of them, because people in Nagaland are practical in their outlook, show little interest in using
their skills and talents to invent any useful tools and mechanisms to improve society through their own private enterprises. Hence, we must sincerely ask, can the government of Nagaland provide jobs to all, especially the youths who graduate in tens of thousands each year? Just to give you a context, from 2016 to 2020, the number of students graduating under the Nagaland University system stands at about 38,545 (source from Nagaland University website). That is in the last five years alone. And this number excludes additional tens of thousands of students graduating from private universities in Nagaland, as well as students from the state graduating from universities and colleges across mainland India. Plus, within the next few months, another 6-8000 odd students will be graduating from the NU system alone. If we account for all of these, then this conservative number of 38,545 will increase to roundabout 50-60,000 plus, if not more. Now for the sake of simplicity and clarity let us only limit ourselves to the NU system. Let us assume that 5,000 odd students out of 38,545 either dropped out or opted for higher degrees or have acquired government jobs—of course, I am being quite generous here, since the actual number will be far lesser than this,
A year on, WHO still struggling to tackle Covid-19 threat
especially for the government sector. We are now left with 33,000 youths who did not secure a government job, nor opted for higher degrees. That is, we now have 33,000 youths who are unemployed, not because they are lazy (some are, but not all), but they, like most of us in Nagaland, are waiting for government jobs. Can the government truly accommodate these youths given the state of Nagaland now has over 2,000 plus crores in deficit and the private sector is not evolved enough to meet the aspiration of the youths? Even if we generously assume this number (i.e. 33,000) to be stable (which it will not since this number will increase) for the next five years, from 2021-2025, then this number doubles to 66,000 and then increases to 1,00,000 by 2030—indeed, the statistical probability for this number of unemployed youths waiting for government jobs to reach close to 8-10 percent of the population is statistically high when we include students from Nagaland graduating from mainland India. And remember, we are only taking numbers from the NU system. So, you can probably imagine the magnitude of this problem when we account for students from the state graduating from universities across India. Also, keep in mind that the number of students graduating from higher educational
institutions in Nagaland alone has been steadily increasing in the last five years (you only need to look at the number of students enrolled in colleges and universities). In other words, if the unemployment crisis, which is already an acute problem, is not prudently dealt with, it will in the next five to ten years produce an intense social problem with immense negative consequences. Given this enormous challenge ahead, what needs to be done? For starters, the state government bureaucrats (including doctors, engineers, directors, and police personnel), elected members of the Nagaland legislatures, contractors, and government employees can selflessly exercise prudence in their mismanagement of public funds. This will greatly aid in the completion, construction, and proper implementation of various schemes and projects. That way basic infrastructures necessary for development are put in place. It also requires bureaucratic elites, political elites, and contractors to contribute back to society by investing the mismanaged money to create new private businesses, enterprises, industries, and inventions. Since, they along with their close associates, realistically speaking, are the only ones in the state with enough resources and money to encourage private innovation and ignite productive eco-
nomic activities—instead of investing them away in mainland India or abroad. This employment crisis further presents an opportunity for society to find ways to employ these youths in various sectors of a modern and evolving economy. When thousands and lakhs of youths are employed, it creates more wealth in society. With increased societal wealth, advancements in innovation, inventions, and enterprise transpire. And this will bring genuine societal progress and development—unlike the half-baked progress and constructions we now call development. Furthermore, society in its part needs to change the manner in which it perceives government and government bureaucracy from a treasure box filled with employment opportunities to be exploited for one’s tribesmen and family members to public servants carrying out day-to-day functioning of the government in the most proper fashion. Given that there is no shortage of qualified and able individuals from all the tribes in the society (substantiated by the number of felicitations that fill the pages in our daily newspapers) as well as qualified staff that men the state government’s offices and departments, such unemployment challenges can be skilfully addressed. Scania bus row: Cong seeks probe bus was an internal affair of the Swedish company, the statement of Scania spokesperson has made it clear that Shri Gadkari and his family members have absolutely nothing to do with purchase
or sale of any Scania bus. Nor do they have anything to do with any firm or individual who might be linked with the purchase of the bus,” Gadkari’s office said in a statement.
Swedish truck and bus maker, Scania, paid bribes to win bus contracts in India in seven different states between 2013 and 2016, according to an investigation by three media outlets, including Swedish news channel SVT. Scania, a unit under Volkswagen AG’s commercial vehicle arm Traton SE, started operations in India in 2007 and established a manufacturing unit in 2011. An investigation started by Scania in 2017 showed serious shortcomings by employees including senior management, a Scania spokesman told Reuters when contacted for comment on the report. “This misconduct included alleged bribery, bribery through business partners and misrepresentation,” he said. He said
Scania had since stopped selling city buses on the Indian market and the factory that was established there had been closed down. “We may have been a bit naive, but we really went for it... we really wanted to make it in India but underestimated the risks,” CEO Henrik Henriksson told SVT. Henriksson said any wrongdoing in India had been committed by a few individuals who had since left the company, and all involved business partners had their contracts cancelled. The bribes were also given to an unnamed Indian minister, according to the report by SVT, German broadcaster ZDF and India’s Confluence Media. An Indian government representative did not respond to requests for comment outside business hours.

AIADMK, DMK cadres protest over seat sharing
C H E N NA I , M A R 1 1 (PTI): A section of ruling AIADMK and DMK workers on Thursday protested against allocation of constituencies from their home turf to allies for the April 6 assembly elections and wanted them to be set apart for partymen. AIADMK workers protested against giving away the Egmore segment here to ally Tamizhaga Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam, while DMK cadres raised slogans against parting with the Ponneri constituency to Congress. The ruling party men also protested against allocation of Poonamalle and Gummidipoondi constituencies to ally PMK. IAF set to raise second squadron of Rafale jets at Hasimara air base NEW DELHI, MAR 11 (PTI): The Indian Air Force is set to raise a second squadron of the Rafale combat aircraft in midApril and it will be based in Hasimara air base in West Bengal, official sources said on Thursday. The first squadron of the Rafale jets is stationed at Ambala Air Force station. The first batch of five Rafale jets arrived in India on July 29 last, nearly four years after India signed an inter-governmental agreement with France to procure 36 of the aircraft at a cost of Rs 59,000 crore. The formal induction ceremony of the fleet had taken place at Ambala on September 10 last. A second batch of three Rafale jets arrived in India on November 3, while a third batch of three more jets joined the IAF on January 27. The sources said the second Rafale squadron is being raised at the next main operating base (MOB) at Hasimara in mid-April
IAF plans to raise its second squadron of Rafale fighter jets at Hasimara Air Force base in West Bengal
this year. India is expected to get more Rafale jets from France in the next couple of months. A squadron comprises around 18 aircraft. The Rafale jets are India’s first major acquisition of fighter planes in 23 years after the Sukhoi jets were imported from Russia. The Rafale jets are capable of carrying a range of potent weapons. European missile maker MBDA’s Meteor beyond visual range air-to-air missile, Scalp cruise missile and MICA weapons system will be the
mainstay of the weapons package of the Rafale jets. The IAF is also procuring a new generation medium-range modular air-to-ground weapon system Hammer to integrate with the Rafale jets. Hammer (Highly Agile Modular Munition Extended Range) is a precision-guided missile developed by French defence major Safran. The missile was originally designed and manufactured for the French Air Force and Navy.

“It has been brought to my notice that a fake news which had appeared in a Hindi newspaper quite some time back is being activated and re-circulated as if that I express doubts about the credibility of the electronic voting machine in the conduct of elections in India.” “This is utterly false and mischievous to circulate a wrong impression in the ensuing elections. I would like to reiterate that the EVMs are most credible and I have no doubt about its efficacy and reliability,” the former CEC said. The EC has attached Krishnamurthy’s statement issued on Wednesday along with its release on Thursday. Assembly elections in Assam, West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Puducherry will begin on March 27.
On Wednesday, Congress members had rushed to the Well of the House taking objection to the remark made by Goel while he was speaking on the no-confidence motion moved against the BJP-JJP government by the main opposition party. The protesting farmers also said they will not allow BJP and JJP MLAs to enter their villages to address any public meeting because they were not putting pressure on the Centre to repeal the three farm laws. Goel was not at his residence when the farmers were demonstrating outside. In Sirsa, a group of farmers burnt an effigy of Haryana Lokhit Party chief and local MLA Gopal Kanda. AMBALA (HR), MAR 11 (PTI): Haryana farmers on Thursday blocked traffic in Jind and Hisar while some of them protested outside a ruling party MLA’s residence, a day after a noconfidence motion focussed on the farmers’ issue was defeated in the state Assembly. A group of farmers held a protest in Sirsa and Jind to protest against those Haryana legislators who had not backed the no-confidence motion. The protesting farmers also blocked Hisar-Jind road for some time and raised slogans against the state government. A large number of farmers held a protest outside the Prem Nagar residence of ruling BJP’s Ambala City MLA Aseem Goel objecting to a remark made by him in the state Assembly. The protesters claimed Goel had made some indirect remark in the context of farmers.

European institutions remain among the biggest issuers among FIs and DBs, reflecting the European Union’s (EU) ambitious sustainability policy agenda, which is increasingly matched by the US, Canada and China. “We expect global issuance of green, social and sustainability bonds by FIs and DBs to approach $300 billion in 2021. This would mark an increase of around 30 per cent from last year, when issuance from these sources rose more than 69 per cent compared with 2019 to a fresh record of $225 billion,” it said. Placement of social and sustainability bonds by FIs and DBs more surged to $123 billion last year as these issuers raised funding for coronavirus response programmes.
NEW DELHI, MAR 11 (PTI): Auto major Tata Motors expects the commercial vehicles industry to grow over 30 per cent in the next fiscal on the back of cyclical demand uptick and overall recovery of economic activity, according to a top company official. The company, which on Thursday launched its latest range of intermediate and light commercial trucks (I&LCV) - the Ultra Sleek T-Series with price starting from Rs 13.99 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi), is also seeking to cash in on the return of demand and enhance its market share in the segment. “One can now say that the economic recovery is well and truly in place and we see the last quarter GDP growth has been positive. The same thing is expected this year. Next year also both the government and RBI have given projections that the GDP should grow in double digits,” Tata Motors President Commercial Vehicle Business Unit, Girish Wagh said. He said the commercial vehicles (CV) industry is very closely linked to the overall economic activity. “We do see that next year the CV industry should grow, do well and we should be getting into a cyclical upturn again after having two years of downturn.”

NEW DELHI, MAR 11 (IANS): Financial institutions (FI) and development banks (DB) are likely to issue record volumes of bonds designed to fund sustainability objectives in 2021, according to a report by Moody’s Investors Service. “Our view reflects sustained strong demand for these instruments as investors increasingly apply environmental, social and governance (ESG) criteria in selecting portfolio assets,” it said. The projected increase this year comes after sustainable bond issuances from these entities reached a historic high in 2020, with a pandemic-related rise in social and sustainability bond placements outweighing a moderate decline in green bond volumes. The report noted that
only traditional boundary that was agreed upon by the two villages without any conflict was Ziri where a sacrificial cat was cut alive. Mentioning that pine tree plantation was carried out by an individual that had nothing to do with the boundary of the two villages, the council further specified that the question of destruction of stone pillar in 1992 by Tungjoy villagers and re-erection of the same in 2018 by district administration of Nagaland did not have any link to the demarcation of the disputed land between the two villages. Had it been inter-State boundary, then the erection of stone pillar would have been carried out by the administration of the two State governments, he pointed out. TVAC further asserted that the measures adopted by Koza were very questionable, adding that it was not very prudent of him to issue one-sided press statement in the land dispute between the two villages. The council alleged that while the TPO president was advocating resolving of land disputes in other areas through traditional system and urging the Manipur government not to interfere by carrying out any developmental activities till the matters were amicably settled on one hand, he was on the other hand pressing for involvement of the Nagaland government in resolution of the land dispute between Tungjoy and Khezhakeno villages. TVAC clarified that the council did not have any intention to malign anybody, but the matter was left to the public to question Koza’s wisdom.

NEW DELHI, MAR 11 (IANS): Fuel prices in the countr y have remained steady for close to two weeks now even though the global oil market remained volatile with regular variations in prices. Accordingly, petrol continued to be priced at Rs 91.17 a litre and diesel Rs 81.47 a litre in the national capital on Thursday. Fuel prices have not been revised for 12 days now. Across the country as well the petrol and diesel price remained unchanged. But the pause has not helped in bringing down fuel prices that have crossed Rs 100 per litre (petrol) in several parts of the country. Since the beginning of February crude has gained more than $7 per barrel.
(From p-1) Pointing out that in traditional Naga society, no such huge stones were used for demarcation of land between villages and interState boundaries, TVAC argued that, however, after much correspondence from their respective offices, the two British officials made a temporary inter-district boundary between Manipur and Nagaland without the consent of land owners in 1872. Therefore, he maintained that the recent claim made by Khezhakeno villagers of erection of stone pillars as boundary by Captain Butler and Dr Gordon in 1872 was not based on facts. According to the TVAC, the matter becomes evident when the temporary boundary drawn by Captain Butler and Dr Gordon in 1872 was superimposed by the orders of political case no.41 of 1934 by JH Hutton and GP Steward, which stated that “this boundary does not of course necessarily determine the right of villages in regard to their land.” Responding to the claim by Tenyimi People’s Organisation (TPO) president Timikha Koza of another stone pillar having been erected by Captain Butler and Dr Gordon in 1872 and that since then watershed principle was well maintained, TVAC asserted that watershed principle of demarcation was not applied anywhere in the inter-State boundary of Nagaland and Manipur. Therefore, TVAC said enforcement of this principle in the lad dispute between Tungjoy and Khezhakeno was irrelevant. It also pointed out that the

Oil Minister Dharmendra Pradhan had told the Lok Sabha earlier this week that cooking gas prices have doubled since the BJP came to power seven years back. IOC said while the upfront per kg cost of firewood is cheaper, LPG is a more economical fuel in the long run when costs such as the total volume of fuel consumed and handling costs are factored in. “Even at the current rates, LPG is cheaper than firewood/ other traditional fuels in many states, largely on account of its overall heating efficiency,” it said. Besides, using LPG has significant health benefits. “The financial savings on account of LPG as fuel, in addition to other benefits such as better health and time saved, make it an enduring choice of every Indian,” the statements said.

Cooking gas consumption between December 2020 and February 2021, the period that saw a massive Rs.175 per cylinder increase in rates across all categories, jumped 19.5% among the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) beneficiaries — the over 8 crore poor households that got free connection since 2016. Ivory Coast’s PM dies in Germany B E R L I N , MAR 11 (AGENCIES): T h e Hamed Bakayoko Prime Minister of Ivory Coast, Hamed Bakayoko, has died in a hospital in Germany, authorities say. Bakayoko, who was receiving treatment for cancer, passed away on Wednesday, just days after his 56th birthday. He was appointed prime minister in July, following the sudden death of his predecessor Amadou Gon Coulibaly. President Alassane Ouattara described Bakayoko as a “great statesman, an example to young people and a man of exemplary loyalty”. Bakayoko was flown to France in February for medical tests and was later transferred to Germany due to his deteriorating health. A former media executive who turned to politics, he played a prominent mediation role in Ivory Coast’s civil war during the first decade of the century.

NEW DELHI, MAR 11 (IANS): The health authorities in Denmark said on Thursday that they are temporarily suspending the use of AstraZeneca’s Covid-19 vaccine as a precautionary measure after some patients developed blood clots since receiving the jab, including one who died, digital news publisher The Local reported. The move comes “following reports of serious cases of blood clots among people vaccinated with AstraZeneca’s Covid-19 vaccine”, the Danish Health Authority said in a statement. But it cautiously added that “it has not been determined, at the time being, that there is a link between the vaccine and the blood clots”. Nevertheless, it asked the regional authorities in charge of vaccine rollout to stop using the AstraZeneca jab until further notice, the report said. The report added that
there is “good evidence that the vaccine is both safe and effective”, but that it would consult with the Danish medicines agency in two weeks on the matter. “It is important to point out that we have not terminated the use of the AstraZeneca vaccine, we are just pausing its use,” Danish Health Authority Director Soren Brostrom said in the statement. According to the health authority, one person had died after receiving the vaccine. The European Medicines Agency (EMA) in Denmark has launched an investigation into the death. “There is broad documentation proving that the vaccine is both safe and efficient. But both we and the Danish Medicines Agency must act on information about possible serious sideeffects, both in Denmark and in other European countries,” Brostrom said.
praised the South Koreans’ role in an alliance “forged in blood,” and he pointedly promised a new approach to Seoul if he were to win. “Words matter — and a president’s words matter even more,” Biden wrote. “As president, I’ll stand with South Korea, strengthening our alliance to safeguard peace in East Asia and beyond, rather than extorting Seoul with reckless threats to remove our troops.” He promised “principled diplomacy.” He might also have mentioned quick diplomacy. Last weekend, U.S. and South Korean negotiators reached an agreement that, if ratified by the South Korean national assembly, would end an impasse over Seoul’s share of the cost of keeping approximately 28,500 U.S. troops on the Korean Peninsula. The troops serve as a symbol of the U.S. commitment to a defense treaty born of the 1950-53 Korean War. The new cost-sharing deal comes after a stopgap one-year arrangement by
the Trump administration in March 2019 that required Seoul to pay about 1 trillion Korean won, the approximate equivalent of $910 million. Trump then demanded a five-fold increase starting in 2020. The South Korean government refused. Biden took office in January with what he apparently viewed as a chance to end the acrimony, and the State Department team of negotiators quickly wrapped up a multiyear deal that requires a 13.9 percent increase in Seoul’s payments this year, followed by four years of increases tied to rises in its defense budget. “This administration is trying to say alliances are important for us,” said Bruce Bennett, an Asia specialist at the RAND Corp., adding that this goes beyond South Korea to include other traditional Asian allies like Japan. Biden officials “know they’ve got a substantial issue trying to deal with the Chinese threat. So making their relationship closer with allies is a key part of the strategy for doing that.”
Iran urges US to take first step to return to nuke deal
Israeli PM cancels UAE trip, citing disagreement with Jordan
T E H R A N, M A R 1 1 (IANS): Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said on Wednesday that the US should take the first step to return to the 2015 nuclear deal, formally known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA). “The US itself has left the JCPOA and should take the first step to return to the deal,” the Xinhua news agency quoted Zarif as saying. They should first solve the problem, and then as Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has said, Iran will implement the deal, he added. After Washington left the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) in 2018 and imposed sanctions against Iran, Tehran has gradually quit parts of its commitments under the deal.

BERLIN, MAR 11 (AGENCIES): German lawmakers say they plan to question Chancellor Angela Merkel and her deputy, Finance Minister Olaf Scholz, about their involvement with the collapsed payment systems provider Wirecard next month. Members of the parliamentary committee set up to investigate the Wirecard scandal said Wednesday that the long-time chancellor will be summoned to testify on April 23, a day after Scholz, the center-left Social Democrats’ candidate to succeed Merkel in this fall’s national election. Wirecard filed for protection from creditors through insolvency proceedings in June after admitting that 1.9 billion euros ($2.3 billion) supposedly held in trust accounts in the Philippines probably didn’t exist. Opposition lawmaker accused authorities — from financial supervisors to prosecutors and auditors — of looking the other way despite reports of irregularities at Wirecard dating back at

The 2021 Gordon Graham Prize for Naga Literature (Sponsored by KET/KES)
Prize and Name
:
Gordon Graham fought at the Battle of Kohima as a young captain of the Queens own Cameron Highlanders in the British 2nd Division under General Grover. Personally, he won two Military Crosses in the Burma Campaign. A journalist, a published author and international publisher of repute, he could not forget the help and assistance given to him and his comrades by the Nagas during the War. In 2004, he initiated the Kohima Educational Trust (KET) a charitable educational trust in the UK to support the education of the descendants of the Naga allies who helped the British to win the Battle of Kohima, now voted the most significant battle in the history of Britain. Gordon always wanted Nagas to come closer with each other and live in peace and harmony. One of his ideas was to promote understanding through learning one another’s language – the result was “Keywords”, a glossary of the 16 officially recognized tribe languages of Nagaland, published by the KET and available for sale with the KES. Gordon had the idea to start a Naga Literature Prize to promote Naga writing. Posthumously (Gordon passed away in 2015), the Kohima Educational Society (KES), the Nagaland counterpart of the KET, decided that this Prize for Naga Literature should be named after him. Hence, the Gordon Graham Prize for Naga Literature. Mission Statement : To promote good writing and to raise the profiles of Naga writers. WASHINGTON, MAR 11 (AGENCIES): A new agreement with South Korea on sharing the cost of keeping U.S. troops on the Korean Peninsula is early evidence that President Joe Biden is shifting America’s approach to alliances in Asia and beyond. It shows he will cut allies a break to build unity in competition against China and Russia. President Donald Tr ump had demanded South Korea pay billions more to keep American troops on its soil. In his view, the United States was getting fleeced by what he suggested were freeloaders masquerading as allies. Initially, Trump insisted the South Korean government pay five times as much as it previously had. Seoul balked, diplomacy went nowhere, and relations with a treaty ally began to fray. Biden, by contrast, settled for a 13.9% boost and follow-on increases that put the issue to rest. Biden’s view is that well-functioning alliances are central to competing with China, which his ad-

fossil remains of dinosaur sitting on nest of eggs discovered
T
he fossilised remains of a dinosaur sitting on a nest of eggs, complete with embryos preserved inside, have been unearthed from China, a study has reported. The find which is a world first, is an oviraptorosaur, one of a group of bird-like, theropod dinosaurs that thrived from 130–66 million years ago, during the Cretaceous Period. According to the exper ts, the specimen was found in 70 millionyear-old rocks excavated near the railway station in Ganzhou city, in Jiangxi Province. The adult oviraptorosaur was partially preserved brooding over the clutch of at least 24 eggs, at least seven of which contain skeletal remains of the unhatched young. The late-stage development of the embryos allowed the palaeontologists to rule out the possibility that the adult had died while laying its eggs. Instead, the find suggests oviraptorosaurs in-
cubated their nests like their modern bird cousins — rather than just guarding them in the manner of a crocodile. This was supported by oxygen isotope analyses of the eggs, which indicated that they were incubated at high temperatures just like modern birds' eggs. 'This kind of discovery — in essence fossilised
behaviour — is the rarest of the rare in dinosaurs,' said paper author and vertebrate palaeontologist Matthew Lamanna of the Carnegie Museum of Natural History in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. 'Though a few adult oviraptorids have been found on nests of their eggs before, no embryos have ever been found inside
those eggs. 'In the new specimen, the babies were almost ready to hatch, which tells us beyond a doubt that this oviraptorid had tended its nest for quite a long time. This dinosaur was a caring parent that ultimately gave its life while nurturing its young,' he concluded. Analysis of the fossil embryos revealed that, while all were well-developed, some had reached a more mature stage than others, suggesting that had they not been buried and fossilised, they would likely have hatched at slightly different times. This characteristic — which experts dub 'asynchronous hatching' — appears to have evolved independently in oviraptorid dinosaurs and some modern birds, the researchers explained. The team also found a cluster of pebbles preserved in the adult oviraptorid's abdominal region, which they said are gastroliths, or 'stomach stones', which
would have been swallowed to help the dinosaur digest its food. This is the first time that verified gastroliths have been found preserved in a fossilised oviraptorid and thus may lead to new insights about their diets. 'It's extraordinary to think how much biological information is captured in just this single fossil,' said vertebrate palaeontologist Xing Xu of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in
Beijing. 'We're going to be learning from this specimen for many years to come,' he added. (Science Bulletin)

Selena Gomez retiring from music?
A
s per People magazine, the 28-year-old star opened up about her lengthy career on both TV and in music for Vogue`s April cover story and revealed that she wants to lean into acting and producing more so than music in the future. “t`s hard to keep doing music when people don`t necessarily take you seriously,” she told the magazine candidly. She added, “I’ve had moments where I’ve been like, ‘What`s the point? Why do I keep doing this?’‘Lose You to Love Me’ I felt was the best song I`ve ever released, and for some people, it still wasn’t enough.” The hitmaker said she wants to “give it one last try” before maybe retiring from music. “I think there are a lot of people who enjoy my music, and for that I’m so thankful, for that I keep going, but I think the next time I do an album it’ll be different. I want to give it one last try before I maybe retire music,” she said. Gomez, who is currently working on the Hulu series ‘Only Murders in the Building’, later clarified saying, “I need to be careful” as she explained that she wanted to spend more time producing (as she did with ‘13 Reasons Why’) and “give myself a real shot at acting.” She said, “I haven`t even touched the surface of what I want to do. The parts that I want are the ones I need help with. I can`t wait for the moment when director can see that I`m capable of doing something that no one`s ever seen.” In the interview, Gomez also spoke about why she decided to release a Spanish EP with ‘Revelacion’, which will be out Friday. She said, “The project is really a homage to my heritage. A lot of my fan base is Latin, and I`ve been telling them this album was going to happen for years. But the fact that it`s coming out during this specific time is really cool.” Before she transitioned to music, Gomez starred in Disney’s ‘Wizards of Waverly Place’ from 2007 to 2012. She rose to fame with the show at the age of 15. (WION)

Covid can aggravate kidney problems Spotify adds 12 Indian Michael B. Jordan to direct ‘Creed III’ languages on mobile app
W
hile the effect of Covid-19 is well known on cardiovascular diseases or lungs, health experts on Thursday warned that Covid-19 patients with kidney problems need to be highly cautious too, or it may damage their kidneys. According to the experts, many individuals who develop Covid-19 experience kidney damage, or acute kidney injury (AKI), also known as acute renal failure (ARF). AKI is a sudden episode of kidney failure or kidney damage that happens within a few hours or a few days. It causes a build-up of waste products in the blood and makes it hard for kidneys to keep the right balance of fluid in the body. It can also affect other organs such as the brain, heart and lungs. “Kidneys get affected in cases where Covid-19 infection is severe. It further causes AKI in about 10 to 20 per cent of hospitalized patients,” Deepak Kalra, Additional Director-Nephrology, Fortis
G Hospital, Shalimar Bagh, New Delhi, told IANS. A study, published in the Clinical Journal of the American Society of Nephrology, showed that in patients with Covid-19, AKI was uncommon but was linked with a high risk of in-hospital mortality. The researchers found that the in-hospital mortality rate was 10 per cent in patients without AKI versus 72 per cent in patients with AKI. “Covid-19 directly attacks immunity and organs which adds to the same severity of the virus-borne disease and seriousness of the disease itself,” said Rajesh Aggrawal, Senior Consultant and Chief of
Action Kidney Transplant and Dialysis Department, Sri Balaji Action Medical Institute, New Delhi. “A k i d n e y p a t i e n t needs complete care and prevention from every sort of infection,” said Agarwal on the occasion of World Kidney Day, which is observed on March 11. The factors associated with a higher risk of AKI include severe Covid-19 disease, high blood levels of creatinine (an indicator of kidney dysfunction), low blood levels of certain immune cells and high blood levels of a protein fragment indicative of elevated blood clot formation and breakdown. ctor Michael B. Jordan is all set to make his directorial debut with the film “Creed III”. In a statement given by the 34-year-old actor, who plays the role of champion boxer Adonis Creed in the film franchise, he says that he is honoured to direct the film. The “Creed” series is a spin-off of the iconic “Rocky” franchise. “Directing has always been an aspiration, but the timing had to be right. ‘Creed III’ is that moment -- a time in my life where I’ve grown more sure of who I am, holding agency in my own story, maturing personally, growing professionally, and learning from the greats like Ryan Coogler, most recently Denzel Washington, and other top tier directors I respect,” he said in his statement, as reported by Collider.com “All of which sets the table for this moment. This franchise and in particular the themes of ‘Creed III’ are deeply personal to me.
I look forward to sharing the next chapter of Adonis Creed’s story with the awesome responsibility of being its director and namesake,” he added. The film, whose script
will be written by Keenan Coogler and Zach Baylin, from a story outline by Ryan Coogler, is scheduled to release on Thanksgiving next year. (IANS)
Alicia Keys reclaims No. 1 on Adult R&B Airplay Chart record in that category, too. Maxwell ranks second thanks to 73 weeks at the summit, while Braxton lands in third place with 50 frames. Plus, with “Show Me Love” and “So Done” both appearing on Keys’ seventh studio album, Alicia, the set is her first to produce multiple chart-toppers since her third, As I Am. That album, released in 2007, housed “No One” and “Like You’ll Never See Me Again.” Featured artist Khalid, meanwhile, picks up his third No. 1 on Adult R&B Airplay, following his singles “Location,” which reigned for three weeks in 2017 and “Talk,” which racked up 12 frames in charge in 2019. As that trio makes for his entire Adult R&B Airplay chart history, the young talent is the first act to have his first three entries each reach No. 1 since Daniel Caesar sent “Get You,” featuring Kali Uchis, “Best Part,” featuring H.E.R., and “Love Again” with Brandy in 2018-19 before “Japanese Denim” broke the streak when it peaked at No. 13 last May. Morgan:England benefitted from priceless IPL
Ahmedabad, Mar 11 (PTI): England’s limited overs skipper Eoin Morgan on Thursday said English cricketers’ tryst with the IPL has “massively benefitted” his team and the “priceless” experience could hold it in good stead in the upcoming T20 World Cup. English players are often criticised by the country’s former cricketers for playing in the lucrative league. “Yeah, we have benefitted from it (the IPL) massively and we are thankful for it and it has been a huge part in our development, particularly in the 50-over campaign towards 2019 World Cup,” Morgan said at a virtual press conference. At the Parc des Princes in Paris, French star Kylian Mbappe put hosts PSG ahead with a 30th-minute penalty, but Lionel Messi equalised with a stunning long-distance strike seven minutes later. However, it was far from enough for the visitors as they still kept a three-goal deficit from the 4-1 loss in the first leg. Barcelona failed to reach the last eight of the Champions League for the first time since the 2006-2007 season.

With the victory, Yan Law’s side have now accumulated 18 points from 11 games, and become the first team from Group B to confirm security from relegation at the end of the season. NEROCA coach Gift Raikhan made three changes from their humbling defeat against the Indian Arrows, bringing in Jiteshwor Singh, Romton Singh and Olen Singh into the starting 11. Aizawl also started with three changes in personnel from their 3-0 victory against Chennai City as Yan Law started Lalchungnunga, Lalmawizuala and Ramhlunchhunga. The first chance of the game fell to Aizawl in the seventh minute as Bishorjit Singh was forced to be quick off his line to clear the danger from a free-kick. On the other end, NEROCA threatened the Aizawl goal in the ninth minute when Jude Garcia met Subash Singam’s cutback and forced a save from Lalmuansanga.

Lalliansanga score the lone goal for Aizawl FC
Subash Singam was at his brightest as his slick touch allowed him to enter the area and shoot in the 11th minute. However, his strike was easily saved by Lalmuansanga. Both Garcia brothers -- Jude and Nathaniel -- had an opportunity each to score from long-rangers in the opening 20 minutes of the game, but their efforts were off target. NEROCA kept threatening and as a result, won a free-kick just outside the penalty area in the 24th minute. Aizawl keeper Lalmuansanga had to be alert to save Nathaniel Garcia’s low, swerving effort. Aizawl came close to scoring the opener in the 30th minute as Brandon
reached a cross from the right but could not turn his effort on target. In the 36th minute, NEROCA’s Nathaniel Garcia rose highest to meet Judah Garcia’s cross but he couldn’t keep it on target. Despite creating more than enough chances to score, both sides headed into the break deadlocked at 0-0. Aizawl took the lead in the 46th minute, just seconds after the restart when Lalliansanga met Brandon’s early cross and sent his well-placed header past a stranded Bishorjit Singh in the NEROCA goal. With a goal in lead, Aizawl now looked comfortable in possession of the ball and kept knocking the NEROCA defence in
search of the second goal. Ramhlunchhunga’s cross found Lalremsanga at the end of a well-built Aizawl move, but the striker’s header lacked both power and direction as it was easily saved by Bishorjit in the 55th minute. Aizawl were inches away from the second goal in the 62nd minute when Brandon burst into the area and struck his shot against the framework. NEROCA spurred a good opportunity to level the scores in the 74th minute as Varun Thokchom squared the ball to Judah Garcia, but his strike did not have the power to beat Lalmuansanga. Aizawl, on the other end, kept churning out chances and Lalremsanga failed to beat NEROCA keeper Bishorjit Singh with back-to-back chances in the 76th minute. Songpu Singsit pounced on a loose punch from the Aizawl keeper but failed to hit the target from just inside the area in the 82nd minute. NEROCA kept attacking, searching for just one good opportunity, but the former champions went on to run the clock down and secure the victory in their first game of Phase-II.

Tokyo 2020: China offers Covid vax for athletes
The Tokyo Olympics was due to start on 24 July 2020 but was postponed for a year because of the coronavirus pandemic.
TOKYO, MAR 11 (AGENCIES): The Chinese Olympic Committee has offered Covid vaccine doses for those competing at the summer Games and at the 2022 winter Games in Beijing, reports BBC Sports. The news was delivered by International Olympic Committee (IOC) president Thomas Bach, who on Wednesday reiterated that
the delayed Tokyo 2020 will start on 23 July. “The IOC will pay for these additional doses of vaccines for the Olympic and Paralympic team,” he added. The Winter Olympics start in February. Bach added: “For each of these doses, the IOC will pay for two doses more which can be made avail-
able to the population in the respective countries.” Meanwhile, Sarah Hirshland, United States Olympic and Paralympic Committee chief executive, said Team USA athletes could be vaccinated before their respective trials because of the pace of the rollout in the country. “The broad base of athletes may have access to
the vaccine sooner than we thought initially possible,” she said. “This is great news and we’re feeling really positive about the progress we’re seeing here in the United States, both in its advantage to US athletes as well as international athletes living and training in our country right now.” Spectator decision to be made before torch relay Tokyo 2020 chief Seiko Hashimoto said on Thursday that no decision had been made on whether to allow foreign spectators to watch the Games in Japan. It comes after reports this week stating fans from overseas would not be allowed to attend due to continuing concerns about the pandemic. Hashimoto added that a decision would be made before the start of the Olympic torch relay on 25 March. ‘It coincides with calls for a political boycott’
China has been pushing its vaccines to an increasing number of nations across the world. In this context, the offer to immunise athletes ahead of the Olympics and Paralympics could be seen as PR stunt. It also coincides with mounting calls for a political boycott of next year’s winter Games in Beijing over China’s treatment of the Uighurs which has been described as “genocide”. But it will be welcomed, especially in the developing world where in many cases vaccination programmes are in the very early stages. The IOC has made clear its preference for as many participants as possible to arrive in Tokyo having received both jabs, while saying it’s not mandatory and governments are not being asked to change rollout protocols. Even so, elite sportsmen and women are jumping the queue in countries like Hungary, Lithuania and Mexico.

Rohit, KL Rahul to open in 1st T20I vs Eng
File photo of K L Rahul and Rohit Sharma. Ahmedabad, March 11 (IANS): Rohit Sharma and K.L. Rahul will open India’s innings in the first T20 International against England at the Narendra Modi Stadium here on Friday with Shikhar Dhawan starting on the bench as reserve opener, confirmed India skipper Virat Kohli. Ever since the return of Rohit, who missed the T20 International series in Australia, there has been speculation over who will open the innings with him from out of Rahul and Dhawan. Rohit was out injured, nursing his hamstring
injury post the IPL late last year. “I don’t think so (that both Dhawan and Rahul can be fitted in the playing XI). If Rohit plays it is quite simple. KL and Rohit have been consistently performing for us at the top and those two will start for us. In case of a situation where either Rohit takes rest or KL has a niggle, (then) Shikhi comes back as third opener. Rahul and Rohit will start,” said Kohli while speaking to the media on Thursday, on the eve of the first T20 International.
Rohit had scored 65 and 60 not out in the last two T20 Internationals he played back in January-February 2020. Out of the last five T20I knocks he has played, Rohit has scored half-centuries in three innings. Rahul, on the other hand, has just one halfcentury in the last five T20I innings but he has managed pretty good starts. He has scored 39, 45, 51, 30 and 0 (in the last T20I vs Australia). Dhawan too has managed good starts - two halfcenturies, a 32 and a 28 besides 1 in the last five T20Is.
Manchester City crush Southampton 5-2 Roger Federer returns with win after 13-month gap MANCHESTER, MAR 11 (AGENCIES): Leaders Manchester City showed that their weekend derby loss was a blip as Kevin de Bruyne and Riyad Mahrez both scored twice in a 5-2 win over Southampton in the Premier League on Wednesday. City’s 21-match winning streak in all competitions was rudely interrupted by a 2-0 defeat by Manchester United but normal service was quickly resumed at the Etihad Stadium as they opened up a 14-point gap at the top. After a slow start City went ahead with their first attack when De Bruyne pounced to convert a re-
La Liga: Atletico Madrid beat Bilbao
Madrid, March 11 (IANS): Atletico Madrid opened up a six-point lead over FC Barcelona and an eight-point advantage over Real Madrid at the top of La Liga after a hard-fought 2-1 win at home to Athletic Club Bilbao. Atletico started strongly but Bilbao grew into the game and began to control the midfield before Oscar de Marcos’s through ball allowed Inaki Williams to pull the ball back for Iker Muniain to score on Wednesday, Xinhua news reported. The visitors were in charge, but Atletico drew level with the last action of the half when Marcos Llorente headed home Thomas Lemar’s cross with the minute of injury time the referee had added on already completed.

bound in 15th minute, only for James Ward-Prowse to equalise from the penalty spot. Mahrez restored City’s lead and Ilkay Gundogan made it 3-1 in firsthalf stoppage time before Mahrez produced another
clinical finish 10 minutes after the interval. Che Adams replied for an adventurous Southampton but De Bruyne grabbed his second of the night shortly afterwards as City looked like scoring
every time they attacked. City have 68 points from 29 games with Manchester United on 54 from one game fewer. Southampton, who played impressive football at times, have 33 points from 28 games and are only seven points above the relegation zone after a ninth defeat in 11 games. For a while it looked as though City might still be suffering a hangover from Sunday as Southampton dominated possession in the opening minutes. But City went ahead when Phil Foden’s shot was parried out by Alex McCarthy to De Bruyne who scored off the crossbar.
Doha, March 11 (IANS): Swiss tennis great Roger hand down the Federer returned from injury to beat Britain’s Dan Ev- here it matters double ans at the Qatar Open 7-6 (8), 3-6, 7-5. It was Federer’s first match in 13 months. The 39-year-old Federer underwent two knee surgeries last year following the 2020 Australian Open. “Feels good to be back. I’m happy to be standing here regardless of if I won or lost. But obviously winning feels better,” the 20-time Grand Slam champion said in the on-court interview after the match on Wednesday. “I was very happy with how I was able to handle the tough moments. I didn’t feel like my game started to wobble the more important the points got. I think I was able to play how I wanted to play, so I think that’s always a great sign and a great feeling to have,” said Federer. Federer and Evans spent the past two weeks preparing for the tournament together. The pair also took to the court in Doha shortly after the draw was made last Saturday for a one-hour practice session. “In practice, it doesn’t matter if you miss a back-
line being down break point. But a lot. I think not serving any faults in my first match back over two hours and 20 minutes, I think that’s a sign that the knee is doing really well on the serve, which I think is crucial,” said Federer.
ISSF World Cup: Qatar team arrives in New Delhi
New Delhi, Mar 11 (PTI): Qatar on Thursday became the first country to arrive for the upcoming combined shooting world cup in Delhi while Brazil and UK are reaching on Friday, after which they will go into a seven-day hard quarantine. Six shooters and their support staff from Qatar reached the national capital on Thursday. Both Brazil and United Kingdom have witnessed a spike in the number of COVID-19 cases in recent times. Participants, coaches and officials from the two countries will be quarantined at the Radisson Hotel situated close to the Dr Karni Singh Shooting Range, venue for the March 18-29 World Cup.
The Inter national Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) tournament will see shooters from more than 40 countries, including UK and Brazil, taking part. Last month, Sports Minister Kiren Rijiju had said that a shorter and convenient quarantine period would be put in place for the world cup in order to not discourage international shooters from competing at the event. “I have already assured that India will conduct international tournaments in such a way that COVID protocols will be followed but foreign players will not be staying in long quarantine and will not be discouraged to participate,” Rijiju had said. Before that, a request was placed before the min-
istry that shooters be exempted from hard quarantine of 14 days and foreign delegates be given vaccine shots on priority. Hosts India will field a strong 57-member squad in the tournament. The squad was named by the National Rifle Association of India (NRAI) last month. The team comprises all 15 Tokyo Olympics quota winners, including Anjum Moudgil, Divyansh Singh Panwar, Manu Bhaker and Saurabh Choudhary. Commonwealth Games gold-medallist Anish Bhanwala was also picked in the 25m rapid pistol team. The competition will be a combined event for rifle, pistol and shotgun shooters featuring as many as 30 different events.
Gunathilaka 8th ‘obstructing’ dismissal in ODIs Antigua, March 11 (IANS): Sri Lanka opener Danushka Gunathilaka became the first Sri Lankan player and only the eighth in the history of ODI cricket to be given out for obstructing the field. It happened during the first match against the West Indies. The incident occurred off the first ball of the 22nd over bowled by West Indies captain Kieron Pollard on Wednesday. Gunathilaka, who was batting on 55 off 61 balls, played at a length delivery and the ball dropped by his feet. Pathum Nissanka, who was at the non-striker’s end, came charging down for the single and Pollard also ran forward spotting the chance to effect a run-out. However, Gunathilaka sent Nissanka back and back-heeled the ball while getting back into his crease just as Pollard was bending down to pick it up. Pollard could then be heard saying “How was that umpire?” on

the stump mic. Umpire Joel Wilson referred the decision to the third umpire and gave a soft decision of out. The third umpire wasted little time in confirming Wilson’s call and Gunathilaka had to walk back to the pavilion.
This is the first instance of a batsman being given out for obstructing the field in international cricket since December 8, 2019 when USA’s Xavier Marshall, who has also played for the West Indies between 2005 and 2009, was sent back against the UAE
in Sharjah during an ICC World Cup League 2 match. It is also the first instance of a dismissal of this nature in a bilateral ODI series since September 5, 2015 when England’s Ben Stokes was given out against Australia at Lord’s in London.
