CM kick-starts ‘Azadi Ka Amrut Mahotsav’ Wheelchair-bound Mamata

KOHIMA, MAR 12 (NPN): Nagaland joined rest of the country in commemorating 75 years of India’s independence christened ‘Azadi Ka Amrut Mahotsav’ at Civil Secretariat Plaza here on Friday, with chief minister Neiphiu Rio kick starting the celebration which will culminate on August 15, 2023. Speaking on the occasion, the chief minister said it was a joy and a proud moment for every Indian citizen to remember the journey when India became a free and independent nation on August 15,1947. Reflecting on decades gone by, Rio acknowledged all those who had selfless given their all to make India a free country. Rio recalled that the freedom movement was birthed in the epochal ‘Dandi March’ started on March 12, 1930 by Mahatma Gandhi, the Father of the Nation. He said the ‘Dandi March’-

from Sabarmati Ashram in Ahmedabad to Dandi, (a coastal village in Gujarat) about 385 kilometers, was intended to protest against the nefarious provisions of the salt tax imposed by the British Government. Rio said the ‘Dandi March’ was preceded by a declaration for Indian independence by the Indian National Congress in December 1929 and celebration of Independence Day across the country by the people on the January 26th 1930. He said the Dandi March had deeper, profound implica-
tions that triggered a wider civil disobedience movement against the foreign rule and provided the spark that ignited the flames of the freedom movement across the length and breadth of the country in the hearts of millions of people. Rio said it was fitting that the nationwide celebrations was flagged off by prime minister Narendra Modi in Ahmedabad to the re-enact the historic Dandi March from Sabarmati Ashram. He said the new independent nation was faced by overwhelming challenges, a
legacy of colonial rule which weakened the economy, stagnated agriculture, a poor industrial base, weak infrastructure, existence of huge social disparities among the people, and many such formidable challenges. However being the biggest democracy in the world India had big dreams and with unfailing zeal and attitude, the nation embarked on a journey overcoming all the obstacles on the path and making spectacular strides in every sphere, he said. Rio also spoke about the transformations that had taken place in India which successfully overcame poverty by creating a vibrant and large economy , comparable with the world’s biggest economies and building infrastructure rivalling the best in the world. Today, he said India has become a formidable space and nuclear power and one of the largest military in the world. He said India has over the decades also deepened and strengthened democrat-
ic processes and foundations by empowering, particularly, the marginalized communities and sections of the society. Rio mentioned that Nagaland, which came into existence 16 years after Indian independence (1963), has also moved shoulder to shoulder in making the dreams a reality. He said today, Nagaland boasts of the good literacy levels, quality of the human resources and road network that have grown substantially to cover every nook and comer of the state over the decades. He also said there has been improvement in availability of power and health sector and progress made in every other area. Rio said today people of Nagaland, like everyone else in the country, now enjoy a much-improved quality of life when compared to the earlier days and lauded all those who took up the onerous task of building the state over the decades.
discharged from hospital
KO L K ATA , M A R 1 2 (AGENCIES): West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who was injured on Wednesday during a rally in Nandigram, was discharged from hospital on Friday evening. The TMC supremo left SSKM hospital on a wheelchair. She has reached her residence. The medical board had suggested 48 hours of observation, however, after repeated requests the authorities decided to discharge the TMC leader, and prescribed her necessary precautions. Doctors of SSKM Hospital had earlier confirmed that the TMC president had suffered injuries on ankle, toe and shoulder, and suggested to keep her under observation for 48 hours. “Our team reviewed her condition this morning. They cut open the temporary plaster on her left leg (Cont’d on p-6) to see how the injury has

healed. A few medical tests might also be conducted,” a senior doctor told PTI. “We generally advise patients with similar injuries as that of Banerjee at least three
to four weeks of rest,” the doctor said. A day after Mamata claimed she suffered injuries on being pushed by a group of “four or five people” in West Bengal’s Nandigram district while campaigning, two eyewitnesses said that no such attack took place and it was just a mishap. What the eyewitnesses said: Nimai Maiti, owner of a sweet shop who was near the spot where the incident took place, told India Today that the TMC chief got injured after the door of the car she was travelling in slammed her leg. “The incident happened in front of my shop. Around 6.15 pm, Mamata Banerjee was moving from one temple to another and at this exact spot there is a turn. While she was waving and was half out of the vehicle, people rushed in, causing the door of her car to slam her leg,” Maiti said.
JCPI serves deadline to NE states asked to block inflow of people from Myanmar Independence of EC can’t be compromised in democracy: SC enact RIIN by Mar 31 Tribal hohos to organize rallies on March 19 DIMAPUR, MAR 12 (NPN): Following a crucial consultative meeting of the Joint Committee on Prevention of Illegal Immigrants (JCPI) with apex tribal bodies and civil society organisations here on Friday, it was decided to make public representation to the State government to demand immediate action on the Banuo Commission’s report and pass an ordinance within March 31 to implement the proposed Register of Indigenous Inhabitants of Nagaland (RIIN). According to JCPI convener Atomi Swu and secretary Tia Longchar, the meeting further resolved that all tribal hohos will submit their representations to the government through their respective deputy commissioners by organizing
peaceful protest rallies on March 19 in their respective jurisdictions, and for each apex tribal body to chart out their own programme as per convenience. JCPI warned that in the event of failure of the government to act on its demand, it would be left with no option but to resort to different democratic means of protest till the desire of stakeholders on the issue was achieved. The meeting was apprised of the ultimatum served to chief minister with March 15, 2020 as the deadline to fulfil the demand for passing legislation on RIIN and enforcement of ILP with December 1, 1963 as effective cut-off date. Unfortunately, with the onset of COVID pandemic in 2020, everything was kept in abeyance. An open letter was again written to the chief minister to enact RIIN during the recently-concluded winter Assembly session, but there was no positive outcome.
4 new COVID cases reported in State DIMAPUR, MAR 12 (NPN): Nagaland on Friday reported four new COVID19 positive cases-- two each in Mokokchung and Kohima, taking the total caseload to 12221. With three more patients recovering from the infection, the active cases stood at 10. Altogether, 11966

persons have recovered from the infection till date. PTI: India added over one lakh COVID infections in six days with 23,285 cases being reported in a span of 24 hours till Friday morning, the Health Ministry said.
NEW DELHI, MAR 12 (AGENCIES): Ministry of Home Affairs has asked the North Eastern states to stop the influx of people from Myanmar. A letter written by an MHA deputy secretary to the chief secretaries of Nagaland, Mizoram, Manipur, Arunachal Pradesh, and to the director general of Assam Rifles asks them “to stay alert and take appropriate action to prevent a possible influx into Indian Territory”. The letter written on March 10 cites a previous advisory from 2017 which asked state and union ter-
ritory administrations to sensitise law enforcement and intelligence agencies “to take prompt steps in identifying the illegal migrants and initiate the deportation process expeditiously and without delay”. The letter notes that it has now been reported that an illegal influx from Myanmar has started. The directive to state governments assumes significance in light of Myanmar authorities asking their Mizoram counterparts to hand over nationals, particularly policemen, who have crossed over in the past few days.
Myanmar’s military last month grabbed power in a coup against the civilian government and imposed a state of emergency after detaining Nobel laureate Aung San Suu Kyi and other leaders of her National League for Democracy. Since then the country has witnessed a wave of protests. There is popular support for the fleeing Myanmar nationals in border areas of Mizoram and Manipur. Student bodies and popular icons have come out on social media to support Myanmar civilians protesting against the Junta. The state governments
have also said that they are willing to accommodate the refugees if the Centre permits. But the MHA directive of March 10 says, “State governments and UT administrations have no power to grant refugee status to any foreigner and India is not a signatory to UN Refugee convention of 1951 and its 1967 protocol. In view of the above you are requested as per law to check illegal influx from Myanmar to India.” According to reports 264 people, including 198 police officers and family members have now fled to India.
NEW DELHI, MAR 12 (IANS): Supreme Court on Friday said the Central and the state governments should not appoint persons holding government office as election commissioners. A bench headed by Justice R.F. Nariman said entrusting additional charge of state election commissioner to a government official is a mockery of the Constitution. The bench emphasized that a compromise on the independence of the Election Commission (EC) is not acceptable, and only indepen-
dent persons should be the election commissioners. The Goa government had moved the Supreme Court challenging the Bombay High Court order, which cancelled elections to five municipalities in the state for not reserving the wards for women as per the law. The Goa government had appointed its law secretary as the state election commissioner for conducting the Municipal Council elections in the state. The top court decision is aimed at safeguarding independence of the Election Commission.

Won’t allow implementation of CAA: Gogoi Town Council status granted to Tamlu ‘Will make Assam govt party to case against CAA in SC’
New Delhi, Mar 12 (PTI): Alleging that the Citizenship (Amendment) Act was the BJP’s “political tool” to divide society for votes, Congress leader Gaurav Gogoi on Friday said if the Congress-led alliance comes to power in Assam, it will not allow its implementation and make the state government party to the ongoing case in the Supreme Court to oppose the controversial law. The Congress’ deputy leader in Lok Sabha said both the identity and the development of Assam are at stake in the upcoming polls to the 126-member Assembly, and asserted that the “winds of hope” in anticipation of a ‘Mahajot’ (grand alliance) govern-

ment were blowing in the state. In an interview with PTI, Gogoi also hit out at the BJP for criticising the Congress’ alliance with the Badruddin Ajmal-led All India United Democratic
Front (AIUDF), saying the alliances formed for the polls in the state were not based on religion but on whether one is for CAA or against it. Asked if he would be willing to take on the
mantle of chief ministership if the Congress-led ‘Mahajot’ comes to power, Gogoi said he has never been after any post and hopes to serve the party in whatever role it deems fit for him. His father Tar un Gogoi, who passed away last November, was chief minister of Assam for three terms successively between May 2001 and May 2016. Gaurav Gogoi said his father has left a vacuum and nobody can fill his shoes. “We miss his wisdom and experience tremendously. He was the one who proposed in a Congress core committee meeting last year in August that Congress should enter into an alli-
ance with the AIUDF and other like-minded parties in the 2021 elections. The concept of the ‘Mahajot’ is not recent and it was pushed by him,” he said. “His (Tarun Gogoi’s) ideas remain alive, his work remains alive, people remember him and we have taken a pledge to fulfill his unfinished work and fulfill his dreams he set out for Assam,” Gaurav Gogoi said. Asked about the Congress’s stance on illegal immigration, he said when it comes to the issue of illegal immigration, the Congress in Assam has a very well-defined policy spelt out through the Assam Accord which is the guiding framework.

The Congress has promised to generate one lakh government jobs every year if voted to power in the state. “Assam is on its way to fulfilling its dream

The recovery of the hand grenade was barely two days after a personnel of 43 Assam Rifles sustained injuries when suspected cadres of a rebel group lobbed a hand grenade at the main entrance gate of the transit camp in Imphal’s Minuthong on March 10 night. The injured personnel was admitted at Leimakhong Army hospital with splinter injuries on his left arm. The Revolutionary Party of Kangleipak (PREPAK)-Pro had owned up for the bomb attack. In
a statement e-mailed to the media houses in Imphal, the rebel group claimed the blast was in response to a recent homecoming “drama” and to show that the outfit has the ability to strike at any place any time. Few days ago, 20 cadres of different underground groups including one from the outfit (PREPAK-Pro) laid down arms before the chief minister of the state. The rebel group termed it as “drama” while asserting that it will have no impact on the armed groups struggling to regain Manipur’s lost sovereignty.

Lok Sabha MP and Congress Campaign Committee chairman Pradyut Bordoloi asserted that the party is committed to empowering the state’s youths.

ANPSTA files RTI on PT vacant posts
DIMAPUR: Expressing concern on the backdoor appointment of untrained candidate, the All Nagaland Pre-Service Teachers Association (ANPSTA) has filed an RTI on the existing vacant posts of Primary Teachers. According to ANPSTA president, Khriekuo Miario and general secretary Botika Sumi this issue was taken up at the meeting of the association held in Kohima on March 12. The association claimed that teachers post “in the past was more or less like reserve for politician as
most of the vacant post has been filled through backdoor appointment of their own candidate leaving aside the deserving candidate who are well trained”. ANPSTA reminded the department of School Education that approximately 400 D.El.Ed trainees are graduating from different DIET institutes across Nagaland ever y year excluding in-service trainees. However, it lamented that the state government instead of providing quality education was not giving much importance to
the quality education but “uses all unfair means by appointing untrained candidate through backdoor appointment leaving aside the qualified and trained candidates”. Therefore, the association stated that once the RTI has been issued, it will not remain silent but will stand committed and seek for fair selection process of primary teachers which are lying vacant at the earliest in order to bring quality education in the government school and strengthen education system in the state.

Reverse banking
ank unions throughout India will go on a two-day nationwide strike from March 16 to 17 in protest against the plan of the government to privatise some Public Sector Banks(PSBs). The government will discuss the merger of two public sector banks and then put them up for privatization. It will be decided after taking into account performance of the Q4 (JanMarch 2021) and Q1 of FY22 ( April to June 2021) after consultation with the RBI. According to sources, ff required, the PSBs can be merged before privatisation. Media reports said the four banks on the shortlist are Bank of Maharashtra, Bank of India, Indian Overseas Bank and the Central Bank of India. Two of those banks will be selected for sale in the 2021/2022 financial year which begins in April, the officials said. The actual privatisation process may take 5-6 months to start. It would be the first time in the history of Indian banking that a public sector bank is being privatised. Public Sector Banks grew rapidly after the late Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, nationalised the banking sector in 1969. The Modi government has been on a bank merger spree since 2014 when Kotak Mahindra Bank and ING Vysya Bank merged. In 2017, the country’s largest public lender - the State Bank of India took over five of its associates and Bharatiya Mahila Bank. In 2019 Bank of Baroda, Vijaya Bank, and Dena Bank merged to Bank of Baroda. In 2020, ten Public Sector Banks(PSBs) - Oriental Bank of Commerce (OBC) and United Bank of India (UBI) were merged with Punjab National Bank (PNB); Syndicate Bank merged with Canara Bank; Allahabad Bank with the Indian Bank and Andhra Bank and Corporation Bank merged with Union Bank of India. The total number of PSBs in India has come down from 27 banks in 2017 to 12 in 2020. All India Nationalised Banks Officers Federation (AINBOF), among several Bank associations which have called for the strike has said privatisation will lead to increased service charges and put a strain on customers across the board. Private banks work on profit and are disinclined to open branches in rural areas and instead concentrate on urban areas and cities. This will affect the common people as private banks will be out of their reach. Job seekers will also be hit hard as private banks will hire the bare minimum. To privatise a PSB, there has to be a buyer and this is where the catch is, according to baking sources. The buyer has to be from India or a global bank having shares of Indians etc. Which Indian tycoon can afford to buy a PSB, is a moot question. When a bank is sold to a private entity, the government gets back its capital. It means the government will have several lakh crores of money added to its kitty. Huge losses incurred by PSBs are largely due to “interferences” by politicians in power and populist social schemes launched for political gains. To cut down losses, the government has increased service charges and levying various others, while significantly reducing interests on savings and deposits. What privatisation means is a ‘P’ or Profit for the buyer and the government with the ultimate loser being the common people, especially the lower income and those in rural areas.
DailyDevotion Total Surrender
Peter began to say to Him, “See, we have left all and followed You.” —Mark 10:28 Our Lord replies to this statement of Peter by saying that this surrender is “for My sake and the gospel’s” (Mark 10:29). It was not for the purpose of what the disciples themselves would get out of it. Beware of surrender that is motivated by personal benefits that may result. For example, “I’m going to give myself to God because I want to be delivered from sin, because I want to be made holy.” Being delivered from sin and being made holy are the result of being right with God, but surrender resulting from this kind of thinking is certainly not the true nature of Christianity. Our motive for surrender should not be for any personal gain at all. We have become so selfcentered that we go to God only for something from Him, and not for God Himself. It is like saying, “No, Lord, I don’t want you; I want myself. But I do want You to clean me and fill me with Your Holy Spirit. I want to be on display in Your showcase so I can say, ‘This is what God has done for me.’ ” Gaining heaven, being delivered from sin, and being made useful to God are things that should never even be a consideration in real surrender. Genuine total surrender is a personal sovereign preference for Jesus Christ Himself. Where does Jesus Christ figure in when we have a concern about our natural relationships? Most of us will desert Him with this excuse— “Yes, Lord, I heard you call me, but my family needs me and I have my own interests. I just can’t go any further” (see Luke 9:57-62). “Then,” Jesus says, “you ‘cannot be My disciple’ ” (see Luke 14:26-33). True surrender will always go beyond natural devotion. If we will only give up, God will surrender Himself to embrace all those around us and will meet their needs, which were created by our surrender. Beware of stopping anywhere short of total surrender to God. Most of us have only a vision of what this really means, but have never truly experienced it.

Post-mortem
Assam Assembly polls: Alliances of political opportunism? S o the dye is finally cast and the stage is now all set for the Assembly elections in Assam. And though the BJP-led ruling alliance took the plunge into the electoral battle much ahead of its rivals by organising several high profile visits of Central leaders, including multiple visits of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and announcing/launching grandiose projects and populist schemes, the opposition picked up the thread much later to regain some of the grounds it had ceded to the ruling dispensation in this regard. But as things stand now, the game is still wide open for either side to make a last-minute dash to the finishing line. Realising the high stakes involved, the Sarbananda Sonowal-led AGP-BJP ruling alliance pulled out all stops to launch a mega poll campaign – holding rallies, launching populist schemes and key infrastructure projects, including laying of foundations of two major bridges over the Brahmaputra, flyovers in Guwahati, medical colleges, hiking wages of tea garden workers, direct bank transfer to social beneficiaries, etc, in addition to giving away land pattas (deeds) to over a lakh of people. And besides Sonowal, a familiar face of the ruling party’s campaigning blitzkrieg has been its charismatic leader and Assam finance minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, who is holding padyatras, cycle rallies, etc, across the length
and breadth of the State for over two months now. Perhaps better understanding the import of carpe diem, the BJP was first off the block in the campaigning trail to give the public impression of a well-oiled party with a strong leadership against a deeply-divided opposition. The opposition did appear directionless as its principal characters – the Congress and AIUDF – were still vacillating between forming alliance and going it alone, while the jatiyatabadi forces (newlyfloated regional outfits) were just trying to break into the scene. The Congress appeared to be more on a sticky wicket after the demise of its stalwart and three-time Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi last November. However, the opposition parties have since closed ranks and floated two new fronts – the jatiyatabadis comprising AASU-backed Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) and Akhil Gogoi-led Krishak Mukiti Sangram Samity’s Raijor Dal (RD), and the mahajot (grand alliance) consisting of the Congress, AIUDF, three left parties of CPI, CPM and CPML, and Anchalik Gana Morcha (AGM). And with the firming of the two opposition alliances, besides the ruling AGP-BJP coalition, Assam will for the first time witness an Assembly election with three pre-poll alliances. The Congress is also trying to match with the BJP by flying in its star campaigners Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka
Vadra and launching its “5 Guarantees” campaign. While the jatiyatabadi camp is naturally upbeat at having formed an alliance, it is the mahajot that clearly received a shot in the arm when the Hagrama Mohilaryled Bodoland People’s Front (BPF) joined the group. It may be noted that BPF was part of the AGP-BJP alliance before the BJP dumped it recently in favour of United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL) to form an alliance to rule the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC). The BPF had earlier partnered with the Congress, before ditching it during 2014 Lok Sabha polls and then joining hands with the BJP in 2016 Assembly elections and has 11 MLAs in the outgoing Assembly. Now, how these alliances fare in the ensuing unprecedented three-phase polls remains to be seen. For almost a decade now, the BJP has been assiduously working hard to build up its voter base, especially among the tea community, the greater Axomiya samaj (society) comprising of various ethnic groups, the Bengali Hindus, the Hindi-speaking people, etc, through its outreach programmes – both through its parent organisation RSS and the government machinery. The party reached out to the tea community, once considered a Congress stronghold, like never before with a slew of welfare measures. At the same time, it quietly experimented with social re-
engineering by stitching together a disparate Axomiya samaj through soft Hindutva by hyping and building on the fear of illegal Muslim Bangladeshi immigrants. However, realising the deep faultlines within the greater Axomiya samaj, it stopped short of playing the aggressive brand of Hindutva that many accuse it of pursuing in other mainland States. This explains as to why the party made deep inroads in the tea belt, besides wining several tribal council elections in the past few years. The sanction of Rs 150 crore for development of Batadrava Than, birthplace of Assam’s 15th16th century religious reformer Srimanta Sankardeva, and its mega launch by Union Home Minister Amit Shah, who also inaugurated Maha Mritunjay temple, the world’s largest linga-shaped temple, at Puranigudam, along with grant of Rs 2.50 lakh to 8,000 namghars and unveiling of Swami Vivekananda’s statue in Barpeta, seem to be all part of this strategy. However, the jatiyatabadi coalition could play spoilsport in the BJP’s bid to have a shy at Dispur for the second time, especially if the former is able to build on the latent anti-CAA sentiment. CAA (Citizenship Amendment Act), which was passed in Parliament in December 2019 amidst widespread protest in Assam, could in fact prove to be the BJP’s Achilles’ heel. Though it’s too early to predict any-
thing, some experts feel that the jatiyatabadis could eat into the votes of BJP on the anti-CAA plank by positioning themselves as a strong regional force, especially in Upper Assam. Actually, the greater Axomiya samaj is largely secular with ethnic and linguistic faultlines being more pronounced than the religious ones, which are often blurred. So, with the jatiyatabadi coalition upping the Axomiya sentiment ante, things could horribly go wrong for the BJP. Hence, the 12 seats in Bodo belt and five in the twin hill districts of Dima Hasao and Karbi Anglong could prove critical for the party. But the latest developments in Bodo belt haven’t been reassuring as though the BJP might have dumped it, but BPF still emerged the largest party in the recently-concluded BTC polls. Also, the AJP-RD combine has struck deal with local parties in the twin hill districts. Similarly, the 15 seats in Barak Valley are also critical as Bengali Hindus determine the outcomes in most of these. But the community is apparently livid at the NDA government’s failure to notify rules for CAA. On the other hand, the coalescence of Muslim votes due to coming together of AIUDF and Congress could prove the task of winning seats in the valley much more daunting for the BJP. However, with dissent brewing within the Congress over allotment of
seats to AIUDF, it could work either way. So, how does the Congress fit into the scheme of things? Well, the grand old party might have formed the mahajot with the objective of keeping the BJP juggernaut at bay, but ironically this could be its biggest undoing as well. The alliance with AIUDF is likely to further reinforce its image among the Axomiya samaj as a party that panders to Bangladeshi immigrants, particularly Muslims. And notwithstanding its high anti-CAA pitch, whatever little support base it still has among the Assamese-speaking people could be lost forever and it could very well be relegated as an insignificant entity. Its dual stand on CAA – stridently opposing it in Brahmaputra Valley, but muted in Barak Valley where Bengali Hindus comprise 50% of population – isn’t also likely to help matters. Meanwhile, with some jatiyatabadi leaders now calling for fielding common opposition candidates in certain constituencies to thwart BJP, the game is now even more interestingly poised, even as dissension within most political parties over ticket distribution is leading to leaders switching camps overnight. Thus, with a few days remaining for the polls, it could still be anybody’s game. Anirban Choudhury Guwahati, Assam

The TMC also gave similar instances of other leaders. “There is a clear nexus between the post by Dilip Ghosh on Facebook, multiple complaints seeking removal of DGP, the unilateral decision of the ECI to remove the erstwhile (police chief), the plan revealed by Saumitra Khan on Twitter, BJP’s request to suspend/remove security personnel of Ms Banerjee, the resultant attempt on the life of Ms Banerjee and the cover-up of the same by Adhikari,” the memorandum said. A BJP delegation comprising Union Minister Piyush Goyal and party general secretary Bhupender Yadav on Friday met Election Commission officials and demanded an independent inquiry into the incident in which TMC supremo and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee got injured. The BJP delegation met poll panel officials hours after a six-member group of Trinamool Congress (TMC) leaders met the EC demanding a high-level probe into the alleged attack on West Bengal Chief Minister in Nandigram that led to her injury. Besides Goyal and Yadav, party leaders Sambit Patra, Anirban Ganguly and Swapan Dasgupta were also in the BJP delegation. Addressing reporters after the meeting, Yadav said the BJP has demanded an independent inquiry into the incident in West Bengal’s Nandigram on March 10 when Banerjee got injured. Yadav, a general secretary of the BJP, said, “The party also requested the election commission to make public the video of Banerjee’s rally in which she got injured.” The BJP leader said once a candidate files nomination, the poll panel maintains a visual record of his public engagements. The saffron party also demanded that special observers be appointed for the Nandigram Assembly seat from where Banerjee is contesting against her protege-turnedadversary the BJP’s Suvendu Adhikari.

The PM said that India’s personality was getting echoed globally and being taken note of these days. The PM was speaking at the Gandhi Ashram in Sabarmati after flagging off a replica of the famous Dandi yatra, carried out 91 years ago by Mahatma Gandhi to oppose the salt cess levied by the British. Says ‘100 per cent’ confident of victory Haldia (WB), Mar 12 (PTI): BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari filed his nomination on Friday from the Nandigram seat against his mentor-turned-adversary Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee, and said he was “100 per cent” confident of his victory. Adhikari filed his papers at the sub-divisional office in Haldia after leading a-km-long roadshow. Union ministers Dhar mendra Pradhan and Smriti Irani took part in the rally before Adhikari filed the nomination papers. “I am 100 per cent confident of my victory in Nandigram. The people of the area are with me. I am the son of the soil,” he told reporters. Adhikari, who switched over to the BJP

in December, is up against the chief minister who decided to challenge him at his home ground. Banerjee has already filed her nomination from the constituency on Wednesday. Adhikari won the Nandigram seat as a TMC candidate in 2016 by bagging over 67 per cent of the votes, defeating his nearest CPI rival by a margin of 81,230 votes. The Left-led Grand Alliance
has fielded CPI(M)’s youth leader Minakshi Mukherjee from the seat. Earlier in the day, Adhikari urged people not to vote for “outsiders”, as he flayed the ruling party for betraying trust of the people. “I would appeal everyone not to waste your votes in favour of outsiders, who have betrayed your trust and aspirations after coming to power in 2011,” Adhikari said, without naming Banerjee. Adhikari has been calling himself “bhoomiputra” (son of the soil) and dubbing Banerjee as an outsider in Nandigram as she does not cast her vote there. The feisty Bengal leader who represented Bhowanipore seat in the West Bengal assembly since 2011 has given up her tradition seat in favour of Nandigram.

In a tweet in Hindi, Gandhi said the farmers were carrying forward the tradition of Dandi march and the “anti-farmer Modi government, like the Britishers, wants to trample upon ‘satyagraha’”. “Satyagraha will win, not arrogance!” he added. In another tweet earlier, Rahul Gandhi also attacked the Centre over the issue of employment, saying students want jobs but the government is giving them “beating by police, spraying by water cannon, tag of ‘anti-national’ and unemployment”.

been taken to increase the number of institutional isolation centres, while those in home isolation would be monitored closely. Speaking to reporters, Deputy CM Pawar said some tough decisions have to be taken as it was being seen that some people were not following COVID-19 protocols. He said the district had adequate number of hospital beds for COVID-19 treatment. Queried on the vaccination drive in Pune, Pawar said the number of cases were rising and more doses would be needed if everyone above the age of 18 was to be inoculated within city limits. “I have asked Pune MP Girish Bapat and Maval MP Srirang Barne to raise this issue in Parliament. I will also ask MPs like Amol Kolhe, Supriya Sule to raise the issue,” the Deputy CM said. Pune district on Thursday reported 2,840 coronavirus cases that took its tally of infections to 4,28,344.
case as an act of intimidation and browbeating with mala fide intention The memorandum stated that civil society organisations of Peren district had on March 6 requested Ceasefire Supervisory Board chairman, through Peren deputy commissioner to intervene and secure release of the captives as this was a clear case of violation of ceasefire ground rules by NSCN (U), but without any result. Hence, the student body demanded that the abducted persons should be released unconditionally forthwith and that their families be financially compensated by the State government for the hardships the illegal confinement has caused, as no tangible action was visible on the State administration’s part so far. Setting a deadline of 48 hours to meet on its demand with effect from March 12, ZSUN cautioned that failure to meet its demand would compel it to launch the next phase of protest and declared that it should not be held responsible for any eventuality.

Pune, Mar 12 (PTI): Considering the recent spike in COVID-19 cases, the administration in Maharashtra’s Pune district has directed schools and colleges to remain shut till March 31 and curtailed the operating time for hotels and restaurants. According to the new set of restrictions, schools and colleges will remain closed till March 31, hotels and restaurants will be allowed to function till 10 pm, and food deliveries will be permitted till 11 pm, Pune divisional commissioner Saurabh Rao said. The administration will ensure that the preparations for Class 10 and 12 board exams will not be affected at this time, he said. Hotels and restaurants will have to operate with 50 per cent seating capacity, and operators have been asked to put up a board

The decision to impose additional curbs was taken during a meeting with Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar, who is also the guardian minister of the district. The authorities have also held a detailed discussion on COVID-19 vaccination in the city, Rao said. “As Pune city is witnessing a rise in active cases and daily count of infections is also high, the authorities plan to send a proposal to the Centre seeking a policy decision to inoculate people above the age of 18 in Pune, as an exception,” the official said. If the Centre decides to allocate additional vaccine doses, the preparedness of the local administration was also reviewed, he said. “According to the experts, if we inoculate people above 18 in Pune, we will be able to bring down the second wave of the pandemic here,” he added. Biden sets July 4 to ‘mark Independence’ from Covid
WASHINGTON, MAR 12 (PTI): US President Joe Biden has announced that all adult Americans will be eligible for COVID-19 vaccination by May 1 under an ambitious plan to get the country, worst-hit by the pandemic, closer to normal by July 4th, Independence Day. In his first prime-time address to the nation on Thursday since assuming office on January 20, Biden offered an ambitious plan to lift the country from the worst health crisis using a pair of upcoming dates: May 1, by which he will order states to allow all adults to receive vaccines; and July 4, when he said Americans can again celebrate Independence Day in person. “After this long hard year, that will make this Independence Day something truly special, where we not only mark our independence as a nation but begin to mark our independence from this virus,” he said in his address,

shortly after he signed a USD 1.9 trillion coronavirus relief package approved by the US Congress. His speech also came a year after the outbreak was classified as a pandemic by the World Health Organisation. Laying out new steps in the school reopening effort, Biden said his administration will continue to take steps to combat the spread of variants including expanding testing and genomic sequencing. Biden said that he is using every power he has as President of the United States to put the US on a war footing to get the job done.
“It sounds like hyperbole, but I mean the war footing, and thank God we are making some real progress now. In my first full day in office, I outlined for you a comprehensive strategy to beat this pandemic. We have spent every day since attempting to carry it out,” he said. As of Thursday, he said total deaths in America due to COVID-19 is over 527,000. That’s more deaths than in World War I, World War II, the Vietnam War, and 9/11 combined, he said. “They were husbands, wives, sons, and daughters, grandparents, friends, neighbours, young and old. They leave behind loved ones unable to truly grief or to heal, even have a funeral...,” he said. The US is the worst-hit country with the world’s highest number of cases and deaths at 29,150,068 and 529,102, respectively, according to Johns Hopkins University.

international 5 arrested in S.Africa’s biggest banking scam JOHANNESBURG, MAR 12 (IANS): South African police have arrested five people in connection with the collapse of VBS Mutual Bank, the country’s biggest banking scandal in recent years. The police said the suspects were arrested in Thursday morning raid at various places in Gauteng and Limpopo provinces as they “continue to rid the country of corruption and corrupt activities”, reports Xinhua news agency. The arrested persons will be answering to a combined 188 counts of charges which include theft, fraud, corruption, money laundering and racketeering, the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks) said in a statement. “Now that the attendance of a suspected organized criminal group is secured in court, attention needs to be given to those who contributed to the looting from various municipalities as well as undue beneficiaries,” National Head of the Hawks Godfrey Lebeyasaid .
Myanmar’s first satellite held by Japan on space station
TOKYO, MAR 12 (AGENCIES): Myanmar’s first satellite is being held on board the International Space Station following the Myanmar coup, while Japan’s space agency and a Japanese university decide what to do with it, two Japanese university officials said. The $15 million satellite was built by Japan’s Hokkaido University in a joint project with Myanmar’s government-funded Myanmar Aerospace Engineering University (MAEU). It is the first of a set of two 50 kg microsatellites equipped with cameras designed to monitor agriculture and fisheries. Human rights activists and some officials in Japan worry that those cameras could be used for military purposes by the junta that seized power in Myanmar on Feb. 1. That has put the deployment on hold, as Hokkaido University holds discussions with the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA), the two Hokkaido University officials said. “We won’t get involved in anything that has to do

with the military. The satellite was not designed for that,” one of the officials, a manager of the project, told Reuters, asking not to be identified. “We are discussing what to do, but we don’t know when it will be deployed. If it is halted, our hope is that the project could be restarted at some point.” The manager did not say when the satellite was meant to be deployed, or when a decision would have to be taken by JAXA either to go ahead or delay it. The second Hokkaido University official said the contract with MAEU did not specify that the satellite
cannot be used for military purposes. However, data from the spacecraft would be collected by the Japanese university and cannot be independently accessed by Myanmar officials, the second official said. Since the coup, university officials had been unable to contact the rector of MAEU, Prof Kyi Thwin, the second official added. Officials at JAXA could not be reached for comment. MAEU did not respond to calls seeking comment, nor did a spokesman for Myanmar’s junta. T h e s a t e l l i t e wa s launched by NASA on Feb
20 as a small part of a large and varied payload of supplies to the International Space Station 400 km (250 miles) above the earth. It has since been kept by JAXA inside Japan’s Kibo experiment module. JAXA astronaut Soichi Noguchi is one of the seven crew members now on board the space station. Japan has close ties to Myanmar and is one of its biggest aid donors. While condemning the violence, it has not taken as hard a stance against the coup as the United States and some other Western countries which have applied sanctions. While the spacecraft has not been built to military specifications, Teppei Kasai, Asia programme officer for Human Rights Watch, said it would be easy for Myanmar’s army rulers to appropriate the technology for military use. “So the involved Japanese universities should suspend the project and urgently review it for potential human rights risks,” Kasai said.
Gunmen abduct 30 students from school in northwest Nigeria 30-yr prison term sought for Peru’s ex-First Lady
SANAA, MAR 12 (IANS): David Beasley, Executive Director of the World Food Programme (WFP), warned that Yemen is heading towards the biggest famine in modern history. "Just two days ago, I was in Yemen, where over 16 million people now face crisis levels of hunger or worse. These aren't just numbers. These are real people. And we are headed straight toward the biggest famine in modern history," he told the UN Security Council on Thursday. "It is hell on earth in many places in Yemen right now. Around 400,000 children may die in Yemen this year without urgent intervention. That is roughly one child every 75 seconds. "So, while we're sitting here, every minute and a quarter, a child is dying. Are we really going to turn our backs on them and look the other way?. "To add to all their misery, the innocent people of Yemen have to deal with a fuel blockade... The people of Yemen deserve our help. That blockade must be lifted, as a humanitarian act. Otherwise, millions more will spiral into crisis," the WFP chief added.

Western countries call on Russia to release Navalny
G E N E VA , M A R 1 2 (AGENCIES): Dozens of countries including the United States called on Russia on Friday to release Kremlin critic Alexei Navalny saying his imprisonment was unlawful and demanding an investigation into his poisoning last year. In a statement read out by Poland to the U.N. Human Rights Council in Geneva, they said that actions by Russian authorities against the opposition leader were “unacceptable and politically motivated”. The 45 countries were mainly European but also included Australia, Canada and Japan. Navalny, a prominent critic of President Vladimir Putin, was jailed for two and a half years last month over alleged parole violations related to an embezzlement case he said was trumped up for political reasons, something the authorities deny. “We call on the Russian Federation for the immediate and unconditional release of Mr Navalny and of all those unlawfully or arbitrarily detained, including for exercising their rights to freedom of peaceDate 12/03/2021

LIMA, MAR 12 (IANS): Peru’s anti-corruption prosecutor has requested a minimum 30-year prison sentence for former First Lady and leader of the Popular Force (FP) party, Keiko Fujimori, who stands accused of accepting illicit campaign funds. Another 41 members of the conservative FP have been accused as part of an investigation into alleged illegal contributions to Fujimori’s failed past presidential campaigns, reports Xinhua news agency.
Prosecutor Jose Domingo Perez has also accused them of obstructing justice and making false statements during judicial proceedings. According to the indictment presented by Perez on Thursday, the 45-yearold Fujimori received more than $1 million in illicit campaign funds from Brazilian construction giant Odebrecht. Downplaying the charges, Fujimori claimed she is being persecuted and pledged to run a clean
campaign in the lead-up to the upcoming general elections. “No matter how much a prosecutor now wants to get into the final stretch of the first round, I will continue to face this persecution and energetically move forward so that together we can overcome this health and economic emergency,” she added. The daughter of former President Alberto Fujimori, Keiko Fujimori is making her third run for the presidency.

Russia has previously described such criticism as interference in its internal affairs. Britain’s ambassador, Julian Braithwaite, said it was “disgraceful” that Navalny, who was poisoned last year with what Western countries say was a military-grade nerve agent, had been jailed while the poisoning was not investigated.

Those girls were later freed following negotiations with the government, and it is not known whether a ransom was paid. The Islamic extremist group Boko Haram is also known to kidnap young women and force them into marriage, most notably the 2014 attack on the Chibok secondary school in Borno state. That mass abduction sparked international outcry and prompted the #BringBackOurGirls campaign. Of the 276 girls taken, more than 100 are still missing nearly seven years later.

England thrash India by 8 wkts in 1st T20
AHMEDABAD, MAR 12 (IANS): England thrashed India by eight wickets in the first T20 International here at the Narendra Modi Stadium on Friday. The visiting England side first restricted India to 124 for seven in their 20 overs before coasting to the 125-run target in 15.3 overs to win the first game of the five-match series. England opening batsmen Jason Roy and Jos Buttler did not have to do anything out of the ordinary or take undue risks as the target was small. Even then the two added 72 runs in eight overs to give the visitors a rollicking start. Roy made 49 off 32 balls (4x4s, 3x6s) while Jos Buttler scored 28 off 24 deliveries (2x4s, 1x6). Buttler was scalped by Yuzvendra Chahal who was taken for 44 in his four overs while Roy was picked by Washington Sundar. However, Jonny Bairstow (26 not out off 17 balls) and Dawid Malan (24 not out off 20 balls) took the visiting side to the target with 27 balls to

ATP chief optimistic about life after ‘Big 3’
MUMBAI, MAR 12 (AGENCIES): Losing the best three players of all time would be a massive blow to any sport but ATP chief Andrea Gaudenzi says tennis is strong enough to thrive after Roger Federer, Rafa Nadal and Novak Djokovic hang up their rackets. Federer returned to the court this week after 14 months on the sidelines, and Nadal and Djokovic are going nowhere soon, but they are all well past the age of 30 and the ATP will eventually have to put on tournaments without them. “I am not worried at all for our sport, if we do the right thing,” Gaudenzi told Reuters this week. “And that doesn’t mean taking anything away from
those three guys. They are probably the best players our sport has ever had and maybe will be for a very, very long time.” Federer, who turns 40 in August, and 34-year-old Nadal are tied for the men’s record of 20 Grand Slam singles titles, with 33-yearold Djokovic in hot pursuit on 18. American Pete Sampras, who retired in 2002, is next on the list with 14 majors -- a mark many thought would never be bettered. “It’s going to be very,
very difficult to achieve that type of records, even though I said the same thing when Pete Sampras retired,” Gaudenzi said, before adding with a laugh: “I thought there won’t be anyone ever beating Pete’s records. “Here we have three guys doing that. So never say never.” The so-called ‘Big Three’ continue to lure fans to the stands even after two decades on the tour, while their commercial pull still mesmerizes brands and advertisers.
